Our home streets should be private

It's probably been said before, but we should have the option to either allow everyone, or only your friends into your home streets.

My crops get stolen, my trees get poisoned, and my pigs and everything else get stolen.
I know it's my own fault for putting them there, but still. Why poison all the trees?

For the most part, people on glitch are very nice and welcoming. Everyone shares, and keeps a friendly attitude. Then you get screwed for being nice by doing nice things.

I've planted the same trees five times now, and they keep getting poisoned. Since I have no way to keep anyone out of my yard, I have to delete people on my friends list, just so my yard can function how I want it to.

I don't think it's fair.

  • No one can  poison trees on your home street except people to whom you have given keys.  If this is happening to you, you need to revoke some keys.

And deleting people on your friends list won't stop anyone from coming to your home street.

  • Then how do the trees keep disappearing? Could it be a glitch with the game?

Everytime I plant them and leave, I come back to having empty patches.

  • Does anyone have a key to your house?
Posted 7 months ago by WindBorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Only two people have a key to my house, both of which I've known for years.

It could be anyone doing it, I just don't understand how my trees are disappearing.

The crops I moved to the backyards, and they haven't been touched since.

  • If your trees are dying, then one of your key holders are poisoning them.

  • What about wine of the dead? Couldn't someone pour that on my trees to poison them? Even if their not a key holder?
Posted 7 months ago by JayMan1 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • im not sure how wine of the dead works on other peoples streets...but if it did, then your patches would become "broken" and say Project Available. If your tree just winds up dead, then someone is poisoning them.

  • Strangers can't kill your trees or use wine of the dead.

  • Are they wood trees? Because those don't have to be poisoned to be killed.

  • how often are your trees dying? could they just be getting depleted? You can check to see if their at 0% and died a natural death, i was surprised at how fast mine wear out.

  • Are you petting the trees to get them started?  I don't know if that's necessary, but I've always petted new trees three times to get them growing...
Posted 7 months ago by Don Monkey Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yes, their wood trees.

No, I just planted them about 6 hours ago, their dead already.

I  just replanted them again about 45 mins ago

I planted the same trees in the same patch three times over the course of yesterday.
Posted 7 months ago by JayMan1 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • oooh. if they're wood trees, then they can be harvested and cleared. if you dont want those to be gone super fast, you might want to move your wood trees to your backyard.
Posted 7 months ago by Popcorn☺ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Ah, there's your problem, no one has to poison wood trees to kill them. They're probably not the best to put in your front yard because the last section gives a "harvest and clear" option. So unless you use a lot of fertilidust and check on them regularly people will probably kill them. It doesn't even have to be malicious, they just may harvest and clear without really realizing what they're doing.

  • Eh, either way I was just trying to make a point.

Some sort of filters for who can and cant visit your street would be cool.

  • Ah, well then there was a big long thread in discussion of this.

  • I have one simple rule, if you don't want others to mess with it, put it in the back yard.

  • stoot said in one of those earlier threads

As for home streets being mostly public: we are unlikely to change this. However, we will be letting you create more spaces which can be both public and private so  if don't want people on your home street, you can always leave it completely empty and bare.

  • It would be best if you thought about it as a public street that you get to design and put your name on, and not as something that you own.
Posted 7 months ago by Jewel Stoned Subscriber! | Permalink
  • That is correct.  It is not YOUR street. It is the street your house is on.  You can do things to it, but it does not belong to you.  It is public.

  • Jay, you're at level 22 so were higher before the reset.  Have you never harvested/cleared a wood tree before? What everyone else has said for me too.  Any other trees you plant outside will be fine.  It's only because they're are wood that they will die off in not many chops if those that are chopping don't or are unable to fertilise them.

  • It says on your profile page that you own your house.    I own Treesa's house.  It doesn't say anything about owning the street.
Posted 7 months ago by Treesa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • On your profile, it says "Visit Your Home Street" and when you go to that link, it shows you: "Little Miss Giggles's Home Street" and under that "owned by you". So it does say you own your home street. Just thought I'd clear up that; it doesn't say anything about your house on your profile.

I've got no strong feelings on the subject overall at this point, since trees can't be poisoned any more by strangers.

  • LMG:  you are right! it does say that.

Somewhere I read "you own Treesa's house".  Maybe it wasn't on the profile.  Somewhere else?

Well now they should clear that up shouldn't they?   If we are being told we own our streets then they are sending out mixed messages aren't they?

Of course we should remember we don't own anything.  TS owns everything.  An obvious point but its worth remembering so you don't get too emotionally attached to what you think belongs to you in Glitch.

  • "Of course we should remember we don't own anything.  TS owns everything.  An obvious point but its worth remembering so you don't get too emotionally attached to what you think belongs to you in Glitch."

Sage advice, especially when mentally reconciling that we're all playing a beta game.

However, the breakdown of ownership right now is like this:

TS owns the world (and everything in it).

You own your items, house and your street.

Other players own their items, houses and streets, respectively.

Since the discussion is not whether or not TS owns home streets, but rather you own home streets as it relates to other players, what TS does and does not own is somewhat irrelevant.

  • Eh, either way I was just trying to make a point.

Well, I think your point is less strong now. Because there are limits to what goes on in the front street in front of someone's house.  Not everyone can go around poisoning your trees for example.  Feeders are locked down and only collectable from by keyholders.  And so forth. These things were done so that we could have more control over that street.

But not complete control. Because there are spaces for complete control too, our back yards and our home.  So we can't really complain that we don't have the ability to place things without worrying about what happens to them.  Our house and backyard can be completely private if we want them to be and that, combined with limitations to what goes on in our front yard, is pretty cool from a privacy/ownership perspective, I think.

  • I found where it said "you own treesa's house", its on the the iphone app (which I haven't updated, so it may not still be there).

If the home street is really labelled as something I own then I have to take the other side of the debate and agree that it should be private with the option to allow visitors or not.   They could change the labels to Treesa's public street and remove all references to "my" street but I think its too late for that.  When we had this debate about the community gardens they put up signs saying very clearly:  "Plant for everyone, take what you need".   It was too late.

I don't have the link handy but in the other thread, kevbob quoted stoot saying that home streets would not likely become private but that we would have options to build more private spaces.   Maybe if they do rethink the privacy of home streets then instead of giving us more private spaces they can build adjacent public streets for everyone and give the adjacent property owner the option to develop that street or not (but not to own it or control it or say who can harvest from it).  That may sound like a cumbersome extra level of streets but consider that we used to have real neighborhoods and this "home street" thing with a sign post is a poor imitation of a neighborhood anyway.   Just because you put names on a signpost it doesn't make them "neighbors".     Neighborhoods are complex.     I think it would be great to have adjacent fox preserves (without that security guard bot) that the nearby property owner can plant trees in and provide other resources to attract visitors.

  • I agree that "so-and-so's home street" is misleading and that doing something about that could help matters - I don't think it's too late for a change although I do think it would have been better to have it be something like "street managed by so-and-so" much earlier.

  • Treesa just took this conversation to a whole new level.

The option to create geography, not just isolated home streets (with tenuous connections to other home streets) would be kind of amazing, especially if there was some way to tether them to the "real" world of Ur.

As it stands now, the world is fairly limitless. Right now, Glitch is built in layers (sort of like the plug and play houses), but each "real" street is relatively unique in style from the other streets in the same or similar regions. If there were a way to create a region with set "stuff" that could be customized to create unique configurations, it would be pretty amazing.

It seems more practical, overall, to limit that sort of development to set groups. E.g. if you are a part of group x, you have domain over x physical place on the map.

Users can join and leave groups as they please, and development of physical areas would be dependent upon the contributions of group members.
Posted 7 months ago by Xev Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I didn't say anything about groups.  I was talking about public streets, not privately owned group streets.
Posted 7 months ago by Treesa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Public streets are in the world where nobody's  house stands .
This is what fundamentally is changed ,this is no public but a home street

This is a "neighbourhood street" this is where i go when i leave the world to visit my home.
So yes i fully agree only neighbours and people that get invites .
Its sad but if you cannot stop the mentally retarded that get kicks on hurting people mental or physical TS should protect us, this is the only fair thing to do !
Posted 7 months ago by Great Brain Robbery Subscriber! | Permalink
  • TS already protects us by giving us the Report Abuse link.

You can report any situation that you believe is someone who is getting their kicks by bullying people in the game.  Staff investigate every report and people have been permanently stopped from playing when staff found that they were in violation of the Community Guidelines.

That is *not* someone who is mentally retarded, and your language appears to be at a minimum rude, and shows a woeful lack of information and experience dealing with real people who are developmentally disabled, hold down jobs, have families who love them, and otherwise provide some joy and cheerfulness to the world.

  • @Treesa: I know, darlin' - I was taking your idea and running with it, and speculating on how TS will make good on their vague hints about future group-related privacy that you also mentioned.

I think it could be pretty cool, and the privacy question is neither here nor there as it pertains to groups "owning" and controlling geographical places.
