Is Glitch drawing you out of your shell?

Here in the forums I have seen frequent mention of the game's appeal to those who lack social skills...withdrawn, perhaps a tiny bit agoraphobic. Come out of the closet and confess. I was a 90 pound weakling and at the beach they used to throw sand in my face.
Now since I have been playing Glitch since April I am WONDER WOMAN.....Napalm Beth
Glitch has great restorative properties..Now if only it were Wednesday and the game would be on.

  • @SHOff, in fact, we sit about two feet from each other when we're both Glitching at home and talk both IRL AND on-screen. But then as you know, we are crazy people. It is fun though when I am at work and he's home (we have odd schedules) and Glitch is up to chatter through IM and group chat.

  • RM - noqualia was visiting me a few weeks ago, and we had a BALL Glitching and talking.  No laggy chat!

  • @Fussycat: I think it's less of the sort of games most of the people (I think) here play, but more of the Internet culture and backgrounds. Still, those two aren't far away from each other, with casual gamers (that I've met) less likely to get references to IMPOSSIBRU and such since they got into gaming (and as an extension of that Internet culture) later than other "old-timers". Yeah, it does feel a bit weird for me, having to "hold back" here when it seems like most people won't even get the jokes I say... But I have to say the lack of rabid fanboyism here is rather refreshing, isn't it? You know, "PC GAMING IS DEAD" and "CONSOLE GAMERS ARE ALL CODTARDS" and stuff like that.

  • I can't say the game has done anything in particular to "bring me out of my shell."  I've been an introvert my entire life.  (I am a 40-year-old female.)  I am a homebody, and I have (by choice) a very small circle of real-life friends - my fiancĂ© and one or two others.  I am by no means gregarious.

However, I've played several MMOGs prior to Glitch - Ultima Online, Everquest, Dark Age of Camelot, Star Wars: Galaxies, as well as being a member of guilds and clans for various other non MMO-style online games.  (I don't believe I've previously played a MMO that is browser-based, but I think it's a great concept, and I'm certainly enjoying Glitch!)  I have always been far more social in games than in real-life - not because I don't like people, but because I'm not much of a talker.  I prefer online chat in an environment where the objective (or ONE OF the objectives) is doing something other than talking, with talking/chatting as a nice bonus opportunity to interact with others if I'm in a social mood.

I tend to do a lot of solo play, and I also love to work with a partner or in small groups.  My fiancĂ© and I both play Glitch, and we tend to work as a team a lot.  (He is more social than I, both in real-life and in-game and gets involved in a lot more chatting than I do.)  I have fallen into a pattern of spending at least one afternoon per test working on street projects.  This way I meet other Glitches, but I don't burn on on streetbuilding or get chat fatigue. ;)

I'm not anti-social, but I tend to be fairly taciturn until/unless I know someone well, and I've never been one for small talk or parties.   (However, I've been to each EotW party since I started in Glitch beta...You just won't find me jumping about or hopped up on purple flowers or any of those sorts of shenanigans.  ;)  I'll be standing in a quiet area with a few others, Glitch-watching.)  However, I do pipe up if I see someone asking questions in a chat channel that I can answer, etc.

  • The joke in our house is that my other half aka g33kguy has been designing websites and I have been in various online communities since "Al Gore invented the internet". One thing that has been said by every person I have met IRL whom I have known first online - WYSIWYG - who I am online may be slightly less or more than I am in person but that is only dependent on the situation. I am me.

So the flibberty gibbet me you see here and in the game - check. The reasoning, questioning, analyzing - yep that's me. The silly, whimsical, serious, goofy, geeky -- yep. I am who you see - regardless of virtual or physical world...

  • It hasn't drawn me out of my shell... I pretty much have stuck to myself these past few months as I explored, etc.. but the more I play, the more I am SLOWLY starting to interact more with others.
