Are we? I mean, we've got brown, blue, pink, green, gray...I don't know. To me, it doesn't seem worth it to add this whole new aspect just to get us more than 5 different colors.
I have 10 bigs bags (after 2 toolboxes, spices, elements, compounds and a badge) It gets sorta confusing when you have 2-4 of a colour, since I really dislike pink.
I dont see much point of having coloured bags but dye I agree with, already posted something about general dye for clothes and such. as for it getting confussing having the same colour bags. you can actually rename your bags would should confusse less
We are getting squid supposedly, although they currently look like brown paper lunch sacks. Maybe we could squeeze a squid for different colors of ink, and wouldn't know what color you were getting until you squoze.
+1 to the dye idea. I wished I could recolor my bags, or have 2 colors in my bag. Example green and white for raw items; where as green and red for cooked foods. I would really love matching my toolbox to my hair or skin color too :)
Dye has come up before, but I think it's one of those way-down-the-road ideas.
I'm not sure how effective or do-able it would be all things considered. For each 'object' and each color, a new 'object' would need created in the database and images rendered for play in the world (bags do appear when you drop them on the ground). That takes time, energy, and a manual effort. Now imagine the manual effort behind generating the millions of colors we'll use and various patterns, it becomes an unsustainable nightmare of data and indexing and storage.
Dye in the context of clothing basically negates some of the efforts of the artists, and undermines one of the few things we have to spend credits on. Why should I need to spend 20 credits on a white shirt then 20 more on a blue one, when I can just 'dye' it?
There is an assumption - changes to clothing (such as a change in color) is a simple process. It's not. If it were we'd already have the option to 'pick a color' like we can with hair and skin. The truth is, some colors just *don't* work... and every new outfit gets certain amount of testing to make sure it will 'fit' in the world. Add to that the spritesheet variations and loading concerns (see the Glitch Blog to find out more about spritesheets and optimization), I think dye as an idea is a headache waiting to happen.
Editing to add: Not trying to say it won't happen, just that if it does it's a long long way away.
Dye is a very good idea, maybe we could use it for dying things in our houses as well, if we later get the opportunity to pimp them (curtains, fences, doors.....).
There coud be a dye-making skill as well, and raw materials from which you could make dye. Maybe butterfly wings dust from special butterflies..
