Imagine a reset

The last post to stare out at me when I finally got off to sleep last night said "I hope there's a reset!"

And for awhile last night, I considered what that would be like.  All of us reset.  Fresh out of the brain.  An energy pool of 100, no food reserves, barely any skills.  NOBODY with any skills, or food, or furniture, or credits or imagination or... anything.  Wandering the fresh dewy Urian landscape in our birthday suits, hundreds of cartoony little adam and eves.   What would that be like?

Don't just say "god no, i would hate that, it would suck, I would slit my throat! nonono."   Ignore what you would lose and think for a little while about that post-apocalyptic landscape with you and your fellows struggling to create a new society together.  Foraging for seeds in the ancestral lands like gleaners.   Cheering the hatching of every pig and chicken as lifesaving meat and grain.  Saving for a wood machine of your own and celebrating the purchase as a major milestone.

Imagine it for awhile.  What do you think it would like.  All of us reset, together.

  • That would be nice... We'd be all caught up with eachother, some advancing farther than others. Redoing everything that we already did. Seeing it say, Congratulations! you learned Cooking I !

  • I'm the kind of gamer who will start games over again for the satisfaction of gaining those first few levels and learning those first few skills, so...yeah, I would probably have a lot of fun with that.

If I could ignore all the complaints from people whose experience had just been RUINED FOREVER, anyway. ;)

  • I could handle it *except* for having to re-re-learn all them skills...nu-uh.

  • It's not like I would be entirely upset about it, it's not ultimately my decision to make. But having gone through a few resets already, including one after a very extended period of play, I don't wanna deal with that agaaaaaaaain. </whine>

  • I don't know, there is a fun on having everyone start from beginning together but I know that fun is just for a few days to weeks. And then I will be reminded that I lose a lot of imaginary stuffs... :x

Although considering how TS actually want people to HAVE TO help each others, I think having almost all skills breaks that and people who hasn't get all the skills are now having problem on reaching them.

  • inb4 Bartertown.

Actually, in many ways a reset could be a positive step. Comparing to other games where there is some form of voluntary reset (your stuff is sold/stashed/converted to awesome points) and you get to newb it up all over again... just a little wiser and with a cool shiny.

I'm a hoarder. I hoard. I have a vast pile of stuff I'm amusing myself by slowly making SDBs for, and I'm a veritable noob compared to some folks. I was happy to have hit level 32 before iMG arrived. The question becomes what you DO with your colossal piles of Scrooge McDuck-style wealth once you don't *need* it. Does the endgame become "Farm beans, season beans, donate beans" like I seem to keep seeing referred to? Do we play philantropist and hide random things in interesting places for the newbies to find-farm-steal-ignore? Do we obsessively collect cubimals and throw currants at the rare items we've missed so far in the game?

Personally, I can't wait for invites to open so I can make another Glitch and explore the world from day 1 again. My Glitch at the moment feels broken, quite frankly. The game feels like I'm on easy mode and cheating my way along simply by getting skills before iMG and harvesting the right things. I'm not denying it's fun being able to cruise around and gather my SDB resources in shorter periods of time, but I'm wary of becoming part of the perceived Glitchian Elite (perhaps aristocracy would be a better term?) who have it all and don't have all that much of a challenge any more.

  • I fully agree with TS's choice of not resetting... but not because it would erase players hard work. Just, at some point, it is good to be able to test the systems' (and the company's) ability to make large changes without rebooting. Considering how large both xp to iMG and the housing changes were, I think TS did a pretty darn good job at making it smooth.

    BUT...

As someone who spends a large amount of time in Live Help, there were many times that I thought "Man, it would have been so much simpler just to reset everyone. Let's just take this again from scratch."

Which leads me to something vaguely related...

Whenever I hear folks upset about changes or nerfing or whatever, I desperately want to remind them to look at it with fresh eyes. Look at the changes as if you were entirely new to Glitch. Would the new systems make sense? If you didn't know how it once was, would you feel "screwed" by the way things are now?

Un-launching Glitch was a big, risky move. Glitch had a huge wave of press at Launch One and going back to beta was potentially a very bad PR move. But (or so it seems to me) incredibly wise. Although the core and spirit of the game was not changing, core mechanics were. And the only way to be fair to future players was to go back to beta. It was ballsy and honest. "The game is not ready and not the game we wanted, so we're going to change it." And since unlaunching I believe this is only the 3rd down time there has been. With all those changes. (Note: Most MMOs have regular maintenance downtimes. The fact that Glitch doesn't is pretty amazing, Heck, I think it has been up more than tumblr.)

Because the most important thing is not us, the current players, it is all the players that come after we launch. Not that TS is dismissive of us. To be honest, I find that TS treats us as partners in the process. Look at the "we're down" thread. To me, it is treating us like mature adults who understand the trials and tribulations of building this game requires. I appreciate that.

(Sorry about this. It got all tangential and long and junk. Slow morning and not enough coffee.)

Posted 7 months ago by roderick ordonez Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I like what Lord Bacon-o said...I don't know much about the mechanics on how TS makes this game. I just know that I love to play it. I think they are doing a great job at keeping us in the loop of what is going on. I feel they have the best interests of all of us at the front of their minds. I trust them. Reset or not. If you haven't sunk a bunch of money into credits then by all means delete and start over.  If they have fresh ideas that will make this game grow and double the fun and a reset was that important even if the thought was just a lot to bare...in the long run isn't that what you would want?

  • And nothing of value was lost.
    To me at least.

Though a reset would cure my boredom with this game.
Considering it's hard for me at least to stay switched on to Glitch, when I play other games like D3, LoL, and other stuffs.

  • I feel as though the thread isn't quite following the original question (heh...not that this is unusual). I've been through only one reset. It was an adventure, and different in one big way, at least, from what a reset would look like now: we automatically have homes now and wouldn't be grinding to buy 'em. And skill learning--also different. And IMG. I appreciate that many who've gone through multiple resets wouldn't want to even imagine another, while some newer players might welcome the prospect.

But I too digress. WalruZ didn't ask how we'd feel about a reset or whether we want one...he asked, "what if?" Suspend our own human selves for a sec, as much as we can, and let's think about that. It's a pretty cool philosophical question. Hell--we could even throw in, for fun, reset without resorting to using our credits at first, if we have 'em. I'd set up my tiny home with its bare-bones furniture, and learn...what would I learn? I would be like a shark, constantly moving and nibbling to stay alive. I'd explore in ever-widening circles. A great question, WalruZ, and one on which I'll have to percolate.

  • My original thoughts ran towards feeling that we might all appreciate Ur, and what we have after months of play, in a whole new way.

  • Sure reset Glitch, especially if you want TS to loose a lot of credibility in the gaming world. The gaming world is a very competitive comercial arena where top talent are sought after at all levels, where market share and market creds are critical, and ya get just so many "do-overs" (and IMHO, 1 is the limit).

Also I wouldn't want my resume sullied by having worked at a company which really couldn't bring a stable product to market (as in how many resets after the initial public launch are too many?

    One I say, once again.

    ((( Edit:
Thanks to shhexy corin who showed me I knew what I wanted to say, but I miss-spoke. So I posted this new missage (next msg. just below) which I'll add here as an Edit:

We were launched, then went back into the post-Launch beta (now)...

What I'm trying to say is that total Glitch resets (where everyone starts at the very beginning), can and did happen in pre-1st public launch Beta , not now during the Beta after the first public launch. Once you go public with a game, it's a bell that you can't unring, and doing anything 'except gettin the 2nd Lauch DONE will be harmful to the Glitch brand.

    (((End Edit)))

  • Meherman, I don't really disagree. I don't suggest TS actually do such a think,  I'm just imagining what it would be like from the vantage point of us as experienced players.

  • I understand WalruZ.

I'm just waiting and waiting for RL2.

Somehow for me it all seems "unreal" being back in beta after the first launch...something like being half-standing, kinda-sorry, etc, etc,.

  • Honestly, after playing for 7 months or so if it was to completely reset back to zero I wouldn't play any longer.  It just wouldn't hold the same interest for me.  One of the main reasons I play as long as I do is because everything in game is just so damned easy for me.  I've been lucky in the fact that during the IMG upgrade I had enough to get me back to exactly where I was before.  To start from scratch would be too much a step backward for me and hold no interest.

  • Dudes!!! If a kid asked you to imagine being an astronaut with them, I strongly doubt you'd start saying you have a fear of heights and getting into the technicalities of space travel; you'd most likely play along. That's what this is--an imaginary exercise asking you to consider what our glitchens' lives would be like if we started over together.

Damn but we're so bloody literal sometimes.

  • I'm thinking of making an alt so I can play the game over with the new housing style and skill/upgrade relationship. So I would have fun with a reset. Especially if we got a warning so we could do it like the last reset and have a giant party on the streets with people dropping their inventories everywhere, that was an epic EOTW party.

  • The last reset was fun.   It was mostly the collective letting go of all material possessions and so called achievements that was an interesting new experience for me.  The starting over was a bit tedious but it really didn't take long to get back on our feet, collect resouces, buy a house, etc.  A couple of weeks maybe.

Some people are going to hate me for even mentioning this, but one of the things my imagination sometimes turns to is not a reset but ...an end.  I mean an end like Faunasphere's end, or like the end of any game that doesn't become financially successful.     It seems silly, but I'm pretty sure I would cry listing to the last GNG song.   I bet everyone would cry.

OK, back to reality.   I think it will be very successful.   Maybe not wildly successful but who needs that anyway?

  • I'm one of the weirdos that would love it.

I love the thrill of figuring out the optimal route to get things done, especially with prior knowledge/experience of known pitfalls and known strategies.  I've enjoyed every reset thus far, and would welcome any in the future. I actually like learning the skillz over, so that I can do things differently.

I feel for the newbs coming into the world in the future, because those of us that have been here a while, don't have a clue anymore in how to help them since the game really has morphed into something completely new with all the recent changes - upgrade cards, iMG, etc.  I think strategies are much different now in how to optimize things in the gameplay than they were at the last beta reset.

Of course, I can always have an alt to try the new gameplay...and to keep the whining and sniveling down from any reset, I likely will have (yet another) one to see how different the world of Ur is through new eyes once they get the new tutorial developed.  At one point, stoot mentioned a self imposed 'reset' of sorts for your character...and I'd love that as long as I could keep my credits/tokens/etc.  I'm not one driven to get to level 60 because to me, there is nothing after that...you are stuck there for now...I'd rather enjoy the journey of just enjoying the game vice grinding to gain levels, but I do get the concept that some love to level, and that is their joy.  That's the great thing of this game, we all get to play differently.
