Invites Re-enabled

Invites have been re-enabled and the new tutorial and "Gentle Island" now works (at least enough for public testing). So, if you have friends who have been waiting, go ahead and invite them.

For the time being, we request that you NOT invite yourself at a dummy address to run through the tutorial (we're controlling the flow of new people in and recording a lot of stats as part of the testing — alts mess those up). We've posted a summary of how it works (complete with videos) so you can see it for yourself without creating a new character.

The next step is to continue to refine and tweak the current version and extend it (new players are not told anything about cultivation, friends, groups, chat, auctions, towers, visiting others home streets and a lot more). We'll also be re-enabling greeting soon.

For now it is just player-to-player invites. Soon we will also start working through the queue of people who have been waiting for invites (some as long as six months).

We are doing lots of live user testing with people who have never played Glitch to get feedback on pacing and the amount of "directedness" in the new user experience and expect to be iterating on it constantly for the next six weeks or so. This is not the re-launch and does not mean that re-launch is imminent — there's still plenty more to do!

  • Awesome!

So, I have a couple of friends who joined during the last time it was joinable and they are only at level 1 or so. I think they didn't get it, so gave up. If they log in again, can they see the tutorials and start up again?

Just trying to figure out if I should encourage them to come back and give it another go.

  • I have a similar question to traypup.  I have a friend who I think would really like the game, but she found the first beta iteration overwhelming and never came back after reaching level 4.  I'd love for her to give the game a second chance, but I don't know how to persuade her to start over and I doubt very much she wants to make a BRAND new character.  What do you recommend?

  • @Miss Bobbitt:

That's what us greeters are for! :D

  • How exciting, met two newbs out in Bortola this evening.  Good to see new folks exploring around.

  • traypup: Your friends will come back as fresh players and go through the tutorial. The game is so different now that anyone who (as of about two months ago) hadn't logged in for 3 months and was level 3 or less was just completely reset.

Pale Queen: We are now starting to reset more aggressively depending on the length of time since a player was in the game. Check your friend's profile — if they are back to level one, they have been reset (and will start in the tutorial).

  • Excellent, that's exactly what I was hoping to hear.  Thanks :D

  • It's probably been said before, somewhere, but it's worth repeating:

I hope that that all of us seasoned veterans of the game don't absolutely overwhelm the new glitchen by giving them tons of stuff for free. When I was a wee lad, I would have appreciated a little boost, but I mostly wanted to earn badges, quests, etc. (not to mention acquire food, tools, and supplies) on my own. That's where the fun lies.

I used to enter cubimal raffles, but I don't anymore, because when the time comes that I want to collect my sets, I'll want to do it the hard way - buying boxes. When the houses opened up in R2, my plan was to fill my walls with SDBs and collect anything and everything - but I did so not by asking for donations, or even buying from auctions, but by acquiring everything myself through harvest and processing. When I could build a tower, I went out and collected every last molecule of materials, from metal rock to fiber to lumps of earth, and when I got it all, I built my grand tower, floor by floor, all at once.

The point I am trying to make is that if I was I was a new player when these and other projects were available, and the stuff I needed to build was just handed to me by over-eager players, I probably would have said thank you, but been bored with the game, because where's the fun in having everyone else do your work for you?

So, let's be generous to new players. Sell what ever we want to them at fair prices. Help them along with bits of advice now and then, answer any questions, make friends! But let's not play the game for them, hand them every fruit and snail and fuel cell and focusing orb that they lack, or complete their work projects for them. Let them learn, let them grow, let them feel a sense of satisfaction and deeper loyalty to this game we call Glitch. When they do that, this game will truly succeed.

    Thank you.

  • Yeah me too! I want a shiny gold star on my forehead so I can be trusted to get next to the newbies. I promise I won't corrupt them!  Or debauch them either. You know how it is...

    There's always somebody tempting
Somebody into doing something they know is wrong
Well they tempt you, man, with silver
And they tempt you, sir, with gold
And they tempt you with the pleasures
That the flesh does surely hold
They say Eve tempted Adam with an apple
But man I ain't going for that ...

I promise I won't do none of that.  And I swear, I won't take any pleasure in any of it.  (even of the flesh!)  I will be real solemn and act like the whole thing is just killing me and I won't give them so much as a blue bubble.

So can I please be allowed to have my way with the newbies too?

  • I sent out two invites in the last day or two and today I have three more. Is that intentional?

  • Big +1 to dm, we can't guide people through too much.

  • I agree, don't baby the newbs. In less than 48 hours I've gotten to level 12 and have money thrown at me left right and centre by the game. They'll do fine with just a little guidance.

  • It seems we're near release or in a real big stress test, invites are abundant.

I had to wait 5 months for mine.
Posted 4 months ago by Wellincolin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I wouldn't say near release. It's probably more testing of the tutorial so it can be tweaked and smoothed and made juuuuuuust right for new players before launching (along with testing of other things that having a new influx of players might be useful for).

  • I've been stopping Newbies and asking them if they have any questions, and giving them small food items (since they don't have much energy anyway) and maybe hitting them with an RK, but yeah, no need to hand them everything. Learning and exploring was half the fun. (Although I do find that they do NOT understand how to buy upgrade cards, or that it's okay to spend iMG.)

  • I agree with dm.. lets let them ..enjoy it.. the way it is intended.. :)

  • INVITES FEATURE REQUEST:

Can we revoke and reclaim updates we've sent out that we know won't ever pan out? (for example I have some people's alternate email addresses and people that have already stated they don't wish to play Glitch in my list, but the only option i have is to nudge, not reclaim)
I would rather have those invites to hand out to others that may be interested...
    Thanx TS :)

  • I'm a new player who started yesterday. I'm really enjoying the game! So far I think I've only seen other new players, but the game itself is interesting enough for me.... am not dying of loneliness or anything, and saw how to friend two of the new-like-me players that I met.

I was starting to wonder, and worry, that this nice, large, explorative game might not have.... enough challenges to overcome. There hadn't seemed to be any except keeping energy above 0 and having the patience to wait to (l)earn upgrades and such... I recently found the savanna with its nostalgia and found a place where I can buy tickets to challenge other players to minigames of various sorts.... so I have high hopes that the game may prove to have more and more intricate 'can you figure out how to do this' moments as I continue to play, which is a part of what I need to continue playing games for extended times.

However, this game is really neat in a lot of ways. Thank you for making it - and thanks for my invite.... I didn't even remember signing up for an account some day, so it really was a little like suddenly getting that golden ticket in the email :D

  • Ladylamp - it can seem like a slow start - you have to get some skills under your blet, just like real life! But soon you will have lots of quests and you will want to start building onto your house and you will want to get all of the piggy badges and you will want to start a store and you will will want to decorate your tower with your name in walloping diamonds. One fun set of badges that you can start anytime is the completist series:
    www.glitch.com/achievements...

Those will get you wandering around Ur - you will discover wonderful regions and strange characters.

Hang around in Global Chat - you don't have to talk but you can hear about the kind of things others are doing and get inspired :)

Good luck! There is no "win" in Glitch, but lots of opportunities to set your own goals and work hard to reach them.
