Those ole Ancestral Lands on my mind

Okies, i'm going to venture out into the Ancestral Lands - Baqala, Choru, Xalanga and Zhambu - mainly because i need to do the Completist Badges there. Apart from leaping up in the air every time i spot bandits have you lot got any tips - sensible or otherwise?

  • Bring a bottle of Ancestral Spirits to extend your stay there, and Hairball flowers, lots of hairball flowers :)

  • And bring a couple hairball essences...you can run away from those naughty jujus much better.

  • you don't have to jump the bandits- unless you need to go past them, you have enough of a head-start to leave the street without other evasive action as long as you don't stop.

Also, just before your time runs out, edit one of your TP points to wherever you are, then when the debuff wears off and you're ready to come back you can pick up close to where you last stopped.

  • You can jump over Jujus, if necessary. Don't wait for them to tell you what they are gong to steal, just start running/jumping away!

    Good luck!

  • I'd recommend planning your route in advance so you don't have to keep stopping at looking at the map. Also, the first half of your time there it's unlikely that a trap will trigger a Juju, so dead-end streets are fine. Once you are near the end of your time, nearly every trap will spawn a Juju, so avoid the dead-ends then and it's much easier (they don't follow you to the next street).  No jumping required that way.  And umm, make sure you have enough room in your bags for the trap goodies. Not that I speak from experience or anything, but trying to sort your bags while a Juju is hopping around trying to steal your focusing orb because there is a ruby lying on the ground that wouldn't fit into your pack SUCKS!

  • When I did those areas for the completist badges I set out a zig-zag pattern for myself and then just jumped on the cross streets briefly enough to check them off. You'll get them done a lot faster if you don't walk the entirety of every single street, just appearing on a street and going right back to another is enough for the badges.

  • When I ventured out in the ancestral lands, I only used spinach as it makes you walk fast as well as jumping high distances, convenient for reaching from one street to another, I also did use ancestral spirits.
    Goodluck on your trip!

  • Run.

Just run as fast as you can.

  • Try to go in less busy times. I go when my energy is low as the quoins are worth a lot more there and I seldom come out without full energy. In fact, I go there more for the higher vaue coins than the trinkets, although some of them are useful as donations.

  • The jujus seem to go for items in your first inventory slot or bag on the left.  Keep your valuables to the far right if you must take them with you.  The most expensive item I have lost was a Smow Cone that I got from a Dust Trap so it was not a big loss.  It was in my first bag.  They do seem to like Hairball seeds and they especially love paper.  Have too much paper?  Just let the juju have it - Lol!

  • And don't forget your Glitch Companion to see where you've been already ;)

  • if your computer is lagging, it is worth logging off and reloading. You'll have the same amount of time left when you come back, and it's worth not getting (good) stuff stolen due to lag!
Posted 11 months ago by Snowpea Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Take a friend with you who would be willing to go. That way you can give him your stuff to hold onto and just ignore juju's. (Just make sure that he/she doesn't end up being a juju)
Posted 11 months ago by Rook Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Do NOT trade with the Rube if a JuJu has spawned on the street (they're in cahoots).

JuJus will always spawn behind you, so if you keep running in a straight line you don't need to jump over them.  If possible start by using a map teleport to the end of a double dead end road that way you don't have to worry about JuJus (if you've already been on them, don't worry just map tp to a street that you need instead).

I love to use spinach, just don't jump over the unsprung traps.

  • I'm not sure if it has to do with my lag problems with the jujus (grrrr) but it has not been my experience that jujus always spawn behind me. In fact, often as not they spawn in front of me or even directly under me. Like I said though, I do have massive lag problems with those freaking jujus so I may not be the best authority on the subject.
Posted 11 months ago by SkyWaitress Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Wow - thank you all for the excellent tips! I'm sure the subject would make an interesting article for one of the Glitch blogs/magazines.

  • Brib Annie said "The jujus seem to go for items in your first inventory slot or bag on the left."

The Jujus go for everything you could get from the traps so if everything you get from the traps goes in that bag/slot, they will take from that bag/slot. If you were to move everything to the last slot or bag they'd take from there.

  •  Zilloween candy sugar rushes are great for speeding through those streets too.  And I always eat any sno cones I get right away on the off chance a Juju will steal it later.
Posted 11 months ago by Miel Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Thanks WebWeaver! I do try to keep the leftmost bag or slot empty so that anything new goes there. I recommend doing this. All new items will go into the first available slot on the left. If you get something valuable it's still is a good idea to move it out of the first bag or slot. Store your paper there.
Posted 11 months ago by Brib Annie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It's worth evading the Jujus rather than handing your stuff to someone else (even if they only want a sheet of paper) because there's achievements to be had from evading them (and in this context 'evading' just means leaving the street without being caught... you don't have to have jumped over them).

To add to the other excellent points here, I'd suggest leaving the ancestral lands before your time runs out rather than staying the full 10 minutes and then becoming "overwhelmed". The "overwhelmed" debuff lasts 30 minutes before you can even set foot back in there, however (if my memory's correct) if you leave before you become overwhelmed, the timer regenerates at 50% of real time. So if you leave after 9 minutes in there, 18 minutes later you'll have the full 10 minutes allowance again.

  • Set a teleport slot somewhere in the NW corner of Xalanga, that way you can start off from there when trying to get the Xalanga completist badge rather than use up the buff traveling to it.

There are few streets in the Ancestral Lands which require jumping to get to the next signpost (unlike, for example, when navigating the vertical Illemenski Deeps caverns). For flat streets you can select a destination street and click on the directional arrow to walk automatically to the next signpost. As soon as the new street's loaded click on this arrow each time and you can move round the ALs more efficiently.

It took me a while to realise this but you don't have to wait at a dust trap to trigger it. You can still walk past it without stopping and that'll give you a good head start on spawning Jujus.

Slippery Customer etc. badges are for total number of Jujus evaded rather than consecutive evasions, so I guess it wouldn't be the end of the world if one got to you.

Harvest every paper tree you can. You get badges for that too and by far the most paper trees can be found in the ALs.

The music has alternating bars of 5/8 and 6/8 and is one of the more underrated soundtracks in the game. I love the way it resolves itself when the bass guitar line comes in. Be sure to listen with good speakers or headphones!

  • Definitely not my experience that the Jujus always spawn behind you -- in the middle of the night with a great connection and not a spot of lag they're much more likely to appear ahead of me. Perhaps it relates to having a destination set, or having clicked on the destination arrow so you're moving automatically.

Dunno, but very rarely behind me.
Posted 11 months ago by Credulous Ralph Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Shepard - but when is your 'middle of the night' there are a lot of players in here from both the northern and southern hemispheres so doesn't really mean anything without knowing what your GMT is.  Here in NZ, we are GMT+13 at the moment because of daylight savings...
Posted 11 months ago by Arietty Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Arietty Yes, but assume I'm smart enough to know that (a) the Glitch servers and the vast majority of Glitch players are in the US so the "middle of the night" has a Glitch-playing-specific meaning, and (b) the fact that there are only a handful of players in popular areas such as Cebarkul, GFJ, and the various mining areas (not to mention the Ancestral Lands themselves) at the time I'm referring to means that there's very little player-generated lag.

My point is not that "the middle of the night" matters, but that even at a time when Glitch has extremely minimal lag I still observe specific behavior. Having walked the AL easily 200 times, I'm certain that my observations aren't flukes, even if they aren't necessarily applicable to everyone else.

  • It might be worth mentioning that you don't drink the ancestral spirits until your timer almost runs out.  I erroneously took it when I GOT there the first time.  Learn from my mistakes!  :)

  • Shepherd Ralph wrote: the vast majority of Glitch players are in the US

Are there real statistics to back that up? Most of the players I interact with on a regular basis are not US based. So from a personal view that is not my experience.

I agree with Arietty. 'Middle of the night' has no worthwhile meaning to me here in the Game

  • thank you all so much for the very useful tips!

Ah - time zones - does your head in!! I play on other games and have learned these over a period of years so that by now they are etched into my tiny brain.  For American timings - and I believe Glitch is run on Pacific (we're 8 hours ahead of that in the UK) - this is an excellent website which I would recommend - http://www.worldtimezone.com/time-usa12.php It has the daylight savings times, too. But... it really helps us 'over the waters' though, if American friends can state what time zone they are in :)
Posted 11 months ago by Moz Art Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Oof. Yeah, ok, I'll get some actual statistics for you, since apparently you don't play all hours of the day an can't see the extremely clear difference between US daylight hours -- especially afternoon and evening -- and other times of day.

I bet the devs could tell us.  This post was very helpful.  I'd like to hear more tips about the ancestral lands.  I haven't explored them yet.  But hope to soon.  I'm addicted to leveling up. So thanks to all the tippers.  I'll share when I discover something.

  • If you have bad mood from dying or poisioning trees (especially dying) a run in the lands is most beneficial.  There's no better way to restore mood.

Generally speaking you will max your mood before you max your energy, so be selective about what quoins you jump for.  There's no reason to jump for mood quoins you don't need and then be unable to get that favor quoin because you've maxed out your limit.

Map or script teleport into the lands and then run out.  You can better plan where you leave and you can leave once you're maxed your mood/energy rather than get thrown out.   If you can write TP scripts, write a few for far-off dead-end roads.  These are likely to have quoins and unsprung traps on them when you do visit.  Write a new TP script as soon as you visit to replace the one you used.

Use the GPS destinaton feature even to just move from one side of the lands to another.  By pressing the GPS arrow, when you reach the signpost you'll automatically move to your next street, which saves you precious time.

If you enter a street and see someone else on the street they have probably taken everything worthwhile already.  Click on the signpost and choose some alternate route.

  • Thanks Walruz for all that useful info.

Could you please tell me what the GPS arrow is?

Also, I don't know how to use TP scripts.  What is the advantage of using them?  Doesn't it cost the same as clicking teleport on a map?  Do you have to be in the area you want to write a TP?  Thanks in advance for taking the time to answer my questions --If you choose to.  :)
Posted 11 months ago by Peachesan Subscriber! | Permalink
  • You only have a limited number (2 if tele IV, 3 if tele V) of street teleports and 5 token teleports per day. Unlimited to the 3 places you tag. If you have  a script you don't use up your street teleport. So they're useful if you want to come back to a place bunches of times.

When you get to a street, if you have a working quill (and penmanship), click on a piece of paper and there's an option to write a TP script. You can imbue it with a token so it doesn't take energy to use, or you can just use the energy. So energy/token wise it is the same (+ the 2? energy to write the script), it is just if you need to save your street teleports for a given day.
Posted 11 months ago by LokiPDX Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Thanks LokiPDX for the explanation.  I will write a script.
Posted 11 months ago by Peachesan Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Use the + button at the bottom of the radar map to open the area map.   Click on a spot on the area map, say, at the other side of the region and choose "set as destination".   Then, you have an arrow that points you to the destination and the next signpost, the GPS arrow is what TS calls it.   One side benefit of using this arrow to move is that when you hit the signpost at the end of the street your character automatically chooses the next street and it loads, a small convenience and time saver.

BTW, TP scripts are more exact than map teleports.  A map teleport will get you to a specific street.  A TP script will take you to the exact spot you were at when you created the script.  Thus, you can create a TP script for the furthest point on a dead end street (where time and favor quions often appear) and come back to that exact same spot next visit.

  • Thanks Walruz for the info.  I understand tp much better now.
Posted 11 months ago by Peachesan Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Peachesan, I'd recommend keeping your paper in your bag, that way the Jujus will steal that rather than something more valuable...the often only take a sheet or two...definitely leave home anything of value...but they really aren't that hard to avoid...though every so often one will outfox me...much more easy to jump over than the deimaginators from the smugglers runs.
Posted 11 months ago by ~Pink Flamingo~ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • WalruZ implied but didn't specifically mention that if you then click on the arrow your Glitch starts moving to the next stop without you having to do anything. It was a tremendous (and delightful) surprise when I learned of the feature after I'd been playing for quite a while.
Posted 11 months ago by Credulous Ralph Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Thanks Beach Bum   and Shepherd Ralph for that great info.  I will write some tp scripts soon.  I'm wondering how you organized them when you get them.  Do you have a lot of them?  I'm guessing you keep them in a farmost right hand bag so they'll be easily accessed.

I'm working up my nerve to try the AL and will report back if I learn anything not mentioned above.
Posted 11 months ago by Peachesan Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Good luck, but really, it's fun. Those juju bandits are so slow that when they pop up you're just like, 'yeh, whatever, bite me'. Spinach is key. And you only need a few TP scripts. I usually have one for a favourite street, like Fervor Track D in Xalanga, another one for Choru, and then one for somewhere I want to TP out to, like somewhere in Groddle Forest or whatever. Kinda good to have those two other scripts for emergencies anyway. Like in case the juju pops up right next to you - ooooooh! :) Run fast, run free and enjoy the goodies.

Several of you refer to using the Ancestral Spirits, but when I used it, I got only 5 minutes.  Is it still worth it to use it?  Also, do you buy it or make it?
Posted 10 months ago by Peachesan Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I wanted to mention one more thing about the GPS arrow, although it doesn't really apply to the AL because there are so few animals: you can squeeze or nibble animals as you're walking through after clicking the arrow, and then will continue on automatically after each action. You will however have to click the sign for the next street, unlike if you were to ignore the animals.

  • Since harvesting the paper trees is used to get badges, I'm working out the most efficient path through the desert while hitting all the trees (there are 31 paper trees total in all 4 lands).
I sketched up a first run and ran it under normal walking speed.and hit 9 trees. Should be able to much improve that with spinach and Ancestral Spirits.
    I'll keep you all posted.

Are you going to share the route?
Posted 10 months ago by IrenicRhonda Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Peachesan: Ancestral Spirits resets the "overwhelmed" timer. As a result if you drink it right after you arrive then you only get a few additional seconds, but if you drink it right before the timer runs out then you should get nearly the full amount of time back.

  • I made a few paths that would mean you'd have to take a break from the Ancestrals for a biit before going back for paper trees. Every region would be visited just once, and might give enough time to go to other streets if you want to spring traps and dodge juju's for badges. I may see if I can condense it into 2 regions each time, but I haven't tested out my paper tree paths just yet.
