This really needs to be an iPad app...

Ok so my parents are total luddites, and them and all there friends and family are WAY into their iPads. Anyway my Mom keeps playing one of those Farmville type games on her iPad and she's totally addicted. But she loves her Mario platformer too. See this as the perfect combo. Besides, since mobile is booming anyway I really don't see the point in developing for the web anyways. Applications is where its at. My 2 cents.

  • Wait, wait... Your parents are Luddites but are iPad addicts? What? What?

I whole-heartedly agree that the smartphone/tablet app' scene is booming, and that it'd be pretty cool to be able to play Glitch on your iPad, but I really have to disagree with there being no point in developing games for browsers. The casual-social game revolution had its start in the Internet, and doesn't show any sign of slowing down any time soon. Have you seen how popular Facebook games are? What's more, while the iPad admittedly has some big sales figures backing it (15 million as of March), Facebook has 500 million active users.

Ah, you may laugh, but we bought my in-laws an iPad for Christmas last year. They have never used a computer, they've never had a TV - heck, the house barely even has electricity! But they love the iPad! They've just had broadband installed, and spent so much time in the first week using it, they had to upgrade their service to one with a higher data allowance. We'd never have been able to get them to use a desktop OS - it would have been too alien and bewildering for them, but the iPad is absolutely perfect.

  • iPad doesn't support Flash.  Glitch is written in Flash.  So you gotta take it up with Apple.

  • -1.  I can't believe I'm arguing in support of Flash but focusing on just one version, which can be accessed by many devices/operating systems, seems to me to be a better use of time and resource than fragmenting design, development and support time to create and maintain multiple device/OS-specific versions.

    this is funny.

as if facebook and twitter aren't primarily accessed through web browsers, or that the web isn't "mobile".

anyway, i think it is amazing how close glitch is to being playable on the puffin browser for ipad and iphone.

i mean, like really surprisingly close.

course the graphics look a little "soft" but eh whatcha gon do?

  • I came to post and ask about whether there was development for the Ipad, and found this. Puffin browser, you say, Striatic? I'll have to check that out. While I like the Kindle game idea, I read Kindle, B&N and every other format of ebook on my iPad, so I'm not very likely to go to the Kindle.  In spite of the flash difficulties, I'm so holding out hope they get something going on an Apple format somehow.

  • Get them to swap their iPad for a RIM PlayBook - then they can sit on the sofa & play Glitch.

Actually... be interesting to see how it performs. PlayBook claims to be Flash 10.3 but I know that "Flash Support" tends to not be a yes/no thing.

Someone at TS must have tried it out...

  • iOS doesn't natively support Flash. But IIRC, Adobe has a packager for iPhone that allows for Flash/Air based apps. There are other apps out there that have Flash/Air but are wrapped up so iOS doesn't choke on it.

hay, don't view it as perfect, since it seems to drop its connection to the game every 10 minutes and you can't jump .. but if you want to log in, chat and craft, and you don't have access to a computer it'll work in a pinch.

it would work better if it had an arrow key + space bar interface, rather than only using the built in iphone/ipad keyboard. perhaps someone ought to suggest that to the puffin developers.

  • "But IIRC, Adobe has a packager for iPhone that allows for Flash/Air based apps."

they do, they do .. but let's just say that for a game like glitch, the performance may still not be .. sufficient.

i saw a demo this time last year of a website packaged for a top of the line android phone .. this was being presented to android devs, by adobe devs .. and even a basic sliding animation came out stuttery.

wondering if the same thing was true on iOS i looked high and low for a flash ported app with decent performance and couldn't find one.

i think porting flash to iOS via the packager is alright in theory but horrible in practice.

  • striatic -- don't you know that HTML 5 is the silver bullet :D

It's definitely not optimal to use the packager - just like it's not optimal to use a browser that uses a server to run the flash app for you...it just isn't the same. My patience for a less optimal experience is....um....not there. And I deliver mobile experiences for my company!!

Good/bad/indifferent -- the reality is that tablets are getting more popular not less. Users expect to be able to do what they do on whatever device they have. And they all want it YESTERDAY.

Think of all the poor iOS users that still don't have a G+ app....

  • The thing about developing for the browser and in Flash is that you can reach a far wider audience. The amount of Flash-ready devices (including computers) is far more compared to the amount of iPhone/iPads. It's a smart move for Tiny Speck to build their game in Flash until they see some success, then move on to other platforms. Plus, Glitch can run on Android tablets and phones now since it's built in Flash. So, applications are hot right now, but aren't the best place to get started, unless you are doing a dedicated mobile app.

That being said, I'm sure that we will see a dedicated iPad/Android Glitch app sometime in the future, but not until the game gets launched and sees some success. And, if you're interested in finding out when they might be doing it, just keep an eye on Tiny Speck's jobs page. When they start hiring dedicated iOS developers, you'll know that they have an iOS app in the works.

  • I do not know this for fact, but it would not surprise me if some of the thought process is also, "Make it free as a browser Flash game. And then make apps with different game play that we can charge for."  I don't mean that in a "how can we make the most money" type way, but in a "let's get the biggest audience possible and monetize in other ways."

And let's be honest: A Doodle Jump style game where you can play as your avatar fits perfectly... as just one example.
