Survey RESULTS are in :)

The way surveymonkey accounts work is if you are are not a paid member you can only see your first 100 responses.  300 people responded so far, but I can't see all the data because I don't own a credit card to pay the $17.

Thank you to all who have participated and commented! Sorry that I can't see all you guys' responses!

I'll let you analyze the results for yourself.  Do the obvious scientific flaws leave the data meaningless?  Does the data offer a little insight into the Glitchen soul?
But just to let you know, as many of you guessed, the survey was designed to investigate levelism... bias against other Glitch players based on their level.

Original message:

Here is the survey

I'm not going to tell you what Glitchy Issue I'm examining now, because I don't want it to bias the results.  Although perhaps you will be able to guess after partaking in the survey!

Anyway, It's only 9 questions, so it will take but a minute of your time.  So I would appreciate if you would take it!

Thanks!!!

Oooh, and I will publish results here once I have an adequate number of responses.

  • I started to complete it....but something about it made me really uncomfortable and I stopped. I felt as though I was being asked to make value judgements based on too little info. I draw conclusions based on my encounters, rather than on specific stats or aesthetic selections. Not sure if there would even be a way to factor that in.

  • Done! I kind of explained everything at the end lol

@Voluptua, I can understand that.  That's why I expressed my reasons fully in the last box.  It's all hypothetical.  More 'what if?' or 'what would you do?' - I filled in the blanks myself in that regard lol

  • @Sneezelips
    Sorry to make you uncomfortable!
The point of the survey is kind of to force you to "make value judgements based on too little info."
(All will be illuminated soon enough)Of course in real encounters, we all weigh more important factors than arbitrary info like what I provided. Then again, perhaps, for some of us, these superficial factors impact us, maybe subconsciously, in our decisions.

  • I would have liked a "none of the above" option for some of the answers that I HAD to answer...in some cases, I don't do the things asked...not based on the too little info (which was quickly apparent, and I agree VS, made me extremely uncomfortable since answers to those will be skewing results)...I just don't do it...

  • In consideration of you guys' input, I have made none of the questions required fields.  However, for anyone who can stand it, I would suggest answering all the questions.  No one will judge you, because (a) it's anonymous and (b) we understand that you are being forced to choose from constricted choices and in real encounters would weigh less superficial factors.
Posted 8 months ago by Isabelle the Pug Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I had a little trouble at first because it seemed so superficial.  I don't make judgements on so little info in real Life.  I did my best though and was happy to be able to explain at the end.  i am interested in your results and also would like to see some of the comments (Anon is OK).

  • I took the survey but I left a lot of answers blank. Basically, none of the information gives me any insight that would affect the actions/judgment asked about towards each glitch:)
There are some instances (just none of the ones in the survey) in which I would have treated/judged each glitch differently though based on the factors provided, for example "if all three glitch were on the same street mining and you only had one more time of RK to use, who would you use it on?" - Or - "Which Glitch are you more likely to ask if you have a game question?"
Posted 8 months ago by Omnika Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think another avenue of interest would be the impact of the number of friends which a glitch has, especially the number of friends that they have in common with yourself.

  • It's interesting, but I don't think the questions accurately reflect how I feel about Glitches. Maybe more questions, on a wider range? I agree with the above commenters on including friends in common (which may be a larger factor) but I'm also curious to see what data you get.

  • I started, but backed out when it was clear I was being forced to make judgments based on minimal, and trivial, information. The answer 'None' would have been the only valid choice, but wasn't available.

  • I felt the same way- this information isn't what I judge people on. I judge people on what they say and do. I think you might be right that we judge a bit on these too though, and I'm interested to see the results when they come.

  • All you could you do is imagine yourself in that situation and what you would do.  I would quite happily trust a level 60 to hang on to million currants.  My reason given for this on the survey was that by that level I would have A) already seen the player around so they would be semi-known if even just by name and B) I like to think that someone who has reached that level didn't play the game so long by being a jerk.

She's not asking you to draw blood or anything.  Just your immediate responses.  We all have first impressions in the first couple of seconds when meeting anyone new.  It's human nature even though we may like to deny it.

I answered the questions in seconds with my instinctual responses in the hopes that I could help the OP with whatever they were trying to accomplish.

Edit: Issy, I really hope you get enough participants to complete your survey.  Would be interested to see your findings.

  • It's funny... a previous poster said, " I don't make judgements on so little info in real Life." But in real life, we really DO make those snap judgments ALL THE TIME... if we were unable to do so, we would be paralyzed with the amount of decision-making we would have to do. The study of those judgments is called heuristics and I find it fascinating. We walk into a room and, based solely on how we feel about who or what we see, unconsciously and instantly make decisions that change our behavior based on whether we feel threatened or soothed, stimulated or irritated.

We make those judgments in-game all the time as well, whether we are conscious of them or not. Unfortunately, going into a survey makes us hyper-aware of those responses, and we'll place judgments upon them based on how we want to be perceived, rather than what we'd do if we weren't being observed (even by ourselves). Still, looking forward to hearing what you do with this info.

  • Interesting. I look forward to the results. I tried to go into my reasoning in length...
Posted 8 months ago by LokiPDX Subscriber! | Permalink
  • True, Lilith. We do make snap judgments in real life, and there are reasons (whether good or not) that we do so. These same reasons aren't present on Glitch. Glitch is quite different from real life so it's harder/pointless to make those similar judgments; therefore, I don't find it hard to believe that people are finding it difficult to make judgments of the Glitches based on the information given in the survey.

Also, to the OP, I want to clarify some of my choices I picked (sorry, I was lazy at the time I took the survey and just wrote my explanation for the 1 million question) Since I can't go back to the survey, just posting here if you're interested in a more detailed response for your super secret Glitchy research. I think I forgot some of the survey questions, but here are the ones I remember. I'm the one who wrote I wouldn't leave 1 million with either of the choices unless I knew them in real life.

-Who to chat with: Doesn't matter. Based on the limited information given, I have no burning interest to chat with either one of the glitches, but at the same time, I will chat back with any of the three who want to chat.
-Add back as a friend: All of them are fine, I add back anyone who adds me, there is no con in adding friends on Glitch.
-what influenced my judgment the most: For the questions asked, none of the factors. However, overall for judging other things, I would have to clarify level. I would expect the higher level a player is, the more they know about the game and if I had any game questions, I'd ask them for example. Or if I were to only have one use of RK, I'd RK the lower level player all other things equal since I'd assume the higher level players have adequate means to get themselves food (even though when I'm actually playing Glitch, I haven't checked level since I finished the gift a level 3,4,5 quest). Level implies how much you've played the game to me, and how much a person has played Glitch to me doesn't influence me in the types of judgment asked about in the questions.

  • Submitted my answers. I found that entertaining and it was something good to burn time :) Thanks!

  • These questions seem geared to show one answer. There is no option for none of the above or all of the above. There are so many variables to the answers. I would friend back anyone I've had a meaning full chat with, not just "is that your bag on the floor, okay thanks" kind of chats.

Of course it is Human nature to be wary of new things, and new people, but you are forcing an answer based a perceived judgement and it will go only one way.

What you are basically asking is, do you give time to, or trust lower level players.
Posted 8 months ago by Mr Mellifluous Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I tried to fill it in but as 'all' or 'none' were not available options I would've had to skip most of the questions so I'm afraid I abandoned it...
Posted 8 months ago by geekybird Subscriber! | Permalink
  • you should've included "all of the above", and "none of the above" as well. I personally add back anyone who adds me, regardless of what they (their Glitchen) look like, what they write in their status or what they plant in their front yard. it's not real life and not even Facebook, so why would that matter. chatting - I reply to everyone who writes me. as for adding people myself, I just do it randomly. sometimes based on how funky they look, or the weird stuff they do, or the quests we do together, etc.
as for 1,000,000 currants - that I wouldn't trust anyone with :D plus, I will never have 1 mil, not with these greedy icons...
so yeah, this survey can be drastically improved.

  • The survey is as is.  I'm not friends with Issy (other than glitchen experiencing the same game) but I am so sorry you are finding it hard to get people to honestly answer a few questions with immediate responses.  These aren't questions that you should sit and think about deeply, they're instinctual.  All your reasons why, or why not should be put in the bottom box at the end of the survey.  You need to just look at it logically and with common sense. Step back from it in a sense and just answer with that first 'poof' of electrical brainwave.  Then at the end do think and explain your choice, on the survey.

I wish Issy was a teacher, and we were all in classroom, not allowed to go home until we finished the test lol  We'd all be done quicker than hell (and busy at home playing on Glitch :D
Posted 8 months ago by ~Arabesque~ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The point I was making is that the questions seem to be trying to 'prove' a predetermined assumption.
By asking people to answer without a 'none' or 'all' option the results will not be a true representation of what people would do. You are being forced to answer incorrectly, or not at all.
I realise you can justify your answers in the box at the bottom, but surely a small addition to the questions will make that unnecessary.
I'm not trying to put a downer on the survey, and I would be interested to see the results, but as it stands, I don't think it's a fair questionnaire.

  • +1: Good concept; shoddy execution.
Posted 8 months ago by CrashTestPilot Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The only thing you will be able to conclude after your survey is done is that people who wanted to take this survey confirmed your pre-determined assumptions or didn't.

Because of the tiny, self-selected group of people who answer this survey are clearly not able to give you answers that reflect how they really feel, mostly your conclusions will be either "a few people who wanted to take this survey agreed with my biases" or "only one or two people who wanted to take this survey agreed with my biases".

You certainly won't be able to make any true statements about "people who play Glitch feel....".  If you try, you'll simply be exposing all the false assumptions in your idea.

  • Everyone is thinking way to hard about this.  The point of the survey was to test our heuristics in the world of Glitch, not to be an analytical exercise.  It's about first impressions.  We all make snap judgements based on first impressions. It's human.  Besides, answer the survey, even with the constrained options, isn't going to hurt anyone.  I'm really interested to see what the results are, so I hope more people will go ahead and answer!
Posted 8 months ago by Aurora Dellaterra Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Hey folks, there's an interesting new study that touches a bit on the differences between analytical and intuitive thinking... sort of what I think this survey was perhaps trying to measure? I just wanted to share it with those in this discussion who would like to delve a bit deeper into this subject.

Isabelle, try not to take some of these harsher comments personally... I want to applaud your initiative and your idea, and I hope you aren't discouraged from moving forward with your autodidactic research (even Arthur Neilsen had to start somewhere!).
Posted 8 months ago by Lilith Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I really enjoyed this.

Just because we try not to make snap judgments doesn't mean that we don't make snap judgments, and I'd think that people who hate snap judgments would actually be in favor of a survey that reminds people that they do.

Of course you shouldn't do anything that makes you uncomfortable, but I found it really interesting, and I hope nobody reads that survey and thinks that the goal of it is to encourage people to judge other people. Who knows, maybe it's to gather data about how other people do judge each other, and challenge those perceptions!

  • Results are in :)
May post some of the comments for the last question later.
Thanks for all those who completed the survey or commented here.

I consider the debate above these words very healthy and almost as interesting as the survey results.  I expected the survey results to show people generally trusted and liked higher level players more, as they generally do.  I didn't expect my survey to be so passionately attacked and defended.

I think Pomegrandy explained perfectly what I've been thinking and trying to do:
Just because we try not to make snap judgments doesn't mean that we don't make snap judgments, and I'd think that people who hate snap judgments would actually be in favor of a survey that reminds people that they do.

In Glitch, the snap judgements most of us (at least occasionally) make do not really have an impact. In real life and in Glitch, stereotypes influence our decisions and sometimes help us make good decisions.  I would certainly not advise you to trust a level 17 glitch with a million currents! However, especially in real life, where stereotypes are more dangerous, we should be aware of the snap judgements we make and judge people on more important factors than what tree they have planted in their Glitch front yard.

  • Hmmm, I was actually expecting the unexpected twist ending...ie, the lowest level person was actually based on an Alpha tester who repeatedly creates new lower profiles, and the level 60 person was an immature player who had only joined a month ago but had lots of time to grind their way to 60 pretty quickly...so in reality was likely less trustworthy than the low level player...sigh...instead, just the expected results posted...

  • I thought it was fun but expected the results, as sad as it is to say the fact that only 1% were in the 11-20 age bracket only suggests that many of us who took the time to do the (very quick) survey were older, not that it represents the true demographics of Ur.
The social questions at the end were very clever tho, I'm looking forward to what that's all about :)

  • I made my voice clear in the bottom comment box. I don't like making snap judgements on people unless I get some kind of feeling based on what they've said to me or done to me. I tend to listen to my gut feeling. I would say I wouldn't trust anyone just based on what your survey answers were, I'm a person that likes getting to know others and getting a feel for them before making any judgements. I mean, who knows if the low level is actually a decnet person or not? What about the high level person? Just because they're high leveled doesn't mean they're a great person. I'm curious as to what this entire thing was all about and really wish you'd put options for middle of the road or none of the above because i'm sure you'd have a lot different responses if you did.
Posted 8 months ago by Ayasta Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm interested in knowing what percent of people left each question blank once the option to do so was added. I find that the conclusion that people generally like and trust high level players really can't be made from these survey results, especially the "generally like" part.
Level is one of those things that you have to specifically look up if you want to know about a glitch, and I haven't bothered to look at anyone's levels since I finished the "gift a level 3, 4, and 5" quest. Because level is not readily displayed in-game on glitch, I find it hard to believe that it plays a factor in those things mentioned like who you would chat with.... or maybe I'm wrong and there are people who every time they see someone in glitch click "info", but I really doubt that.
And if you would trust any glitch you know nothing about (besides the information given) with 1 million currants to hold, well, I know a Nigerian Prince who needs help transferring his wealth;)
