New Skills Page

Theres a new skills page, looks absolutely awesome, tho for me its a little laggy to load (most likely my lappy being troublesome)

One question it has posed tho is what happens if I unlearn a skill I have upgraded with imagination? Is it lost or held in limbo in case I relearn the skill.

  • I was just about to post this XD! Still checking it out, but looks really sleek!

Edit: as for unlearning, my assumption is that if you have upgrade cards for a skill, they will stay on your upgrades page and be reinstated when/if you relearn the skill. But who knows :P

  • Sleek is right! I like it a lot. Except I think it will take me a bit to get used to the sweating brain, haha.

  • I love the new look!! Am curious about the "Brain Capacity" though and would like an explanation on how that works, what it means. I do understand the 99/48 in my case, meaning 99 skills space total but I only have room for 48...but what does the time penalties mean?? Mine states it is at 1164%!!!! I don't think that's a good thing??

  • Playing around with it more, the "Legend" at the bottom seems pretty confusing... but maybe it's because I've learned all (but 1) of the skills? I guess you don't have to look at the Legend as much as the middle section now, which may take some getting used to. But I'm excited to get used to it, especially when new skills come :D

  • That means that a new skill that takes, for example, one day to learn, will actually take *you* 11 and a half days to learn.
Posted 7 months ago by WindBorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • KinOfWolf: Skills take longer to learn when you are "over capacity", in your case 11x longer. (I'm at 2000% because I haven't bought any brain capacity upgrades.)

You can speed up by unlearning skills you don't need or buying more upgrades.

  • Same here Togger: I'm at like 2062% Time penalty, ouch *cringes*

  • Oooh, so awesome :D

  • Togger:  Thanks!!! I figured it meant it would take me longer to learn skills..but wow!!! Hate to see it, but happy someone has even longer than me...LOL .  I only have the new skill to finish learning right now. The one that was put out with the release of Img so I'm in good shape. (until more skills are released anyway)

  • If I did this right - something that would take 24 hours @ 1164% will now take 286.56 hours or 11.9 days

  • Love it, too. Much clearer and even fun! Thanks, TS UI designer and TS implementer(s)!

  • Oof, I've got a 1514% time penalty. Better keep at those brain upgrades.

  • is that a scan to my glitch brain or my rock's brain? did devs dissected my rock and that's why it's missing? whaaa?!?
cool, awesome new skills page:) yayy!!

  • The Legend part is almost completely useless, imo. The pale green and pale grey (learned/missing requirements) are too similar to each other. It's unreadable.
Posted 7 months ago by Helvete Subscriber! | Permalink
  • imho, the new skills chart is fabulous! Love the learning bar----so cool--- and the hover capability. Yeah, my brain is full at 95/49 and I have a 940% time penalty. But once I finish TR II,  I'll deal with that as new skills become available. Well done, devs!
Posted 7 months ago by GreyGoose Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I love seeing the time penalty stated so clearly.  And that the brain cap is 99. I read it might be 60 and that didn't seem it would be high enough.

I also read somewhere all the brain cap cards were going to be refunded because there was a bug with the prices.  Or was it a selection refund that's already happened?

  • The chart itself (the lower one) could probably use more contrast. Right now it's likely causing many people eyestrain. (the dull green on pale green mostly; but also the Legend and skill group headers font color is a bit on the dim/dull side for the white background)

Edit: oops, Helvete said that right before me. Missed it.

  • It is not working for me. I mean literally. I like that I can see the brain capacity numbers at the top, but the actual skill table is very pale and seems to have skill squares "jumping around." (first one appears highlighted then another somewhere else on the table) And if I hover over a skill to try to get information about it, the information is a) for a different skill altogether, and b) is stacked on top of itself, so nothing can be read.

  • Audaria — we don't support IE so it probably just won't work. Try Firefox, Chrome or Safari.

  • One thing this has clarified for me is the new grouping of the skills.  I don't think the upgrade cards are quite accurately reflecting the groupings though.  Example, I was offered an upgrade for Gathering Speed IV (increased learning speed), but the icon on the card was for mining which according to the skills page should be in the Industrial group.
Posted 7 months ago by dmnddgs Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It still says "I guess you got them all? Congrats!" when you're learning your last one...which means you didn't got em all.

Also extremely light grey vs. extremely light green vs. white is pretty rough.

  • Please explain Brain Capacity: 97/49 Skills.

Do I need more brain capacity or do I have twice the capacity of the skills? My "penalty" is the the 900%s.  (I think you should change the term penalty by the way - priming people for a negative)
Posted 7 months ago by snarkle Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Now you have to click on a skill in the legend to see what it does, it would be great to have the hover back.

  • "Arborology" is the new name - for Gardening, I guess.

  • don't like the legend. was better the old way. gave the skills more character and made the list easier to navigate.

otherwise, making the learning penalties and skill categories clearer is a good step forward.
Posted 7 months ago by striatic Subscriber! | Permalink
  • O.K., now I'm not sure what is correct.  The skills map shows mining in the Industrial section, but if you click on the Gathering item underneath All Learnable Skills it shows the mining skills.

That makes sense to me, but I think the skills map should be redrawn to reflect whatever the correct mapping is.

  • Ledgend colors need to contrast a bit more

  • I'm missing information about which Giants are associated with each skill. That's very useful information to have when choosing where to donate.

Unless, of course, that no longer applies?

  • a developer/API thing:
you can see in the new Skills page (that looks great!!) that there is a problem with the 3 calls per 3 seconds limit.
    * move fast through 3 skills (at the bottom)
    * those moves will update each skill info very fast
    * now move to another skill... it takes 3 seconds (because of the limit time penalty). that's ok.
    * but then if you move to another skill (a second after the last skill was shown).... it takes another 3 seconds!! it shouldn't, because the 3 seconds penalty already happen.

it seems that the limit is 3 calls per 3 seconds. but then if you hit the limit, the 3 seconds penalty doesn't count as 3 passed seconds

note: some times the same happens with the API :(

  • You have to click on the skills in the Legend, Pascale.

  • UXRoot: thanks!

    dmnddgs: looking into it!

Pacale: they are still there, but only in the top section, with all the details.

  • I like the new skills page a lot, but the difference between skills that are learnable vs. learned is hard to see.

  • Wait, what??? You don't support IE? How the Hell have I been playing since the first beta? How am I still playing the game? Has something changed?
Posted 7 months ago by Audaria Subscriber! | Permalink
  • This is really bothering me, it's so much worse in just about every way and was really a pointless change:

    - the colours in the legend are too dim to be of use
    - I have to click through to see skill summaries
    - all of the information is repeated twice on the page. This is the part that bothers me most. None of the information that is given from the categories from the top of the page tells me something I can't see instantly by using the legend. The categories up top are just repeating the legend, in an uglier, clunkier fashion, and they don't even show useful information like, what the prerequisites are, so you have to use the legend anyway.

I usually don't get bothered by changes but going from an elegant, attractive design to a clunky, less functional one makes me sad :( Pretty much the only upgrade is the brain cap indicator.

Also that you made all these changes and didn't fix the biggest problem (which I also posted about in the Bugs forum):

"Whoa! You're learning super fast. Keep in mind, if you switch skills you'll lose your super speed."

    Which is just misleading.

  • Audaria, not supporting IE doesn't mean the game won't work on IE, just if something is broken, it will receive less attention compared to similar issues on a supported browser.
Posted 7 months ago by TomC Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Audaria, the skills page works fine for me on IE9, if you have the compatability mode on that might be the cause, this site does weird thing with that on lol, but like you I have always played and it works the best for me is IE.

  • OMG my brain capacity is 98/40

    time penalty is 1679%
Posted 7 months ago by drakodood Subscriber! | Permalink
  • WOW! Stoot, as much as I love you, it is ALWAYS bad form to expect people to change browsers to play your game. Granted, for now, there isn't an issue with playing so much as the skills page - and perhaps because i'm not a paying customer, my protests shall be ignored, but come on.... you must see how rude it is... Would you like it if the tables were turned?
Posted 7 months ago by Pixieyelsraek Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I like the new, clearer groupings, and the clear indication of brain capacity to skills learned, but I find the new skills tree to be almost impossible to read. Sleeker, but I'm less interested in aesthetics than in actually getting the information I want. The colors don't contrast enough, and even if they did, it would still be less useful than the old icons, which let you see at a glance what sort of skills you were looking at. This is just frustratingly opaque.

  • anne216 - Thanks. I checked and I have compatility mode turned off for this site. Maybe I need to try turning it on, lol. I've never had any problems accessing the skills page (or any of the other pages) and the only IE related problem that I can think of is that there is no formatting in the forums. I've tried firefox and don't like it. I seem to have far fewer lag problems using IE. It is a safe browser and widely used, so I guess I just don't understand why it is not supported.

  • Pixieyelsraek - I just spontaneously virtually kissed you! Please forgive me.
Posted 7 months ago by Audaria Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I agree: elegant but less functional.

Why not show us the Giant relationship on rollover (there's room, with whitespace to spare)? Why not use more contrasty colors? (It's not like the overall Glitch aesthetic is particularly pale and subtle, or sleekly modern for that matter.)

  • I like the new categorization of the skills.  Still trying to decide if I like all the changes, so I'll hold off on commenting, since it might be yet another thing I need to get used to first.

I do love the new Arborology term and the great new tree icon!  It definitely is much more clear than Gardening was.

  • I think the Skills page is still evolving.

I like the new categorization and though I would like to see a return to the old-style icons and hover text I think the page's current incarnation lends to faster updating.
