Global-Chat

I'm not sure what the future holds for Global-Chat,but I very much like the chatter of people 'in the background'. It gives me the sense that everybody's out and about doin' their thing, not being alone, and the world is ok. It also gives the opportunity to add my two cents worth,or maybe I can answer someone's question,or I could ask a quick question and get answers almost instantly as well as from several different perspectives, and all that without having to stop what I am doing.
Global Chat is a popular tool, but it's its popularity that seems to be its downfall...
..when there are a lot of people it is hard to keep up with it.
So, is there a way to limit how many players/who's "chatter" your reading (ie 'listening' to), perhaps personalise Global-Chat a bit? Maybe by clicking on someone's name and 'hiding' it? Or, better yet, by clicking on a friend's name (who is on-line) and joining the personalised Global-Chat-Line he/she is on?

  • One solution is to join a group, or even create a new group with your friends. That would give you a new chat tab when you're in-game, and also provide access to group forums.

  • bringing the twitter like status updates from the home page and into the game client would accomplish this.

  • A twitter like feed would also be decently confusing as you'd end up seeing half of a lot of "conversations" if you aren't following the correct people.

  • lbj - that isn't the case.

if it were set up like twitter, you'd only see @ replies to people you also follow. you can also click the @ reply to go directly to the update it is in response to.

there is also the Facebook model where the replies are bound to the comment.

even without these features people are already communicating via the current glitch update system extremely effectively, with great frequency and little confusion.

  • At some point, Global chat will get too big for everybody (right now for me it doesn't seem so bad for me, but clearly it is for others), but I don't like Group chats--it sucks to have to join the group to join the chat. Chat is best with the serendipity of meeting new people added to it.   That is how I met striatic and Tingly (in 2004? 2005?) and my life has not been the same since.

Also second the half-convo effect of status updates.

How about more than one Global chat?  Uh, and then re-naming it from Global to something else.

  • why are people assuming this "half convo" stuff is an innate property of status updates?

so easily remedied. i just mentioned 3 ways to remedy that effect.

  • Yes, but you mentioned them at the exact same time that I was posting my comments.  So I didn't read your comment until after I posted mine.

  • I actually think an update system would be a boon to chat.

right now I have a huge long list of IM contacts I almost never talk to.

with status updates you could, like, click an update off the sidebar and have it transform into a chat "tab" where everyone clicking on the update could talk about it.

or even just by clicking the name of the updater for a one on one IM session.

  • cool, then I could click on it, open a chat tab and say something like, "What are you guys talking about in this update?  I am only getting half the convo."

So I click on the update---who else is there to discuss it besides me?  Would it just add an tab with alert, like an IM alert to other players...but if updates aren't threaded, who else gets the alert?   Or are you just opening a general chat tab that has a pre-loaded topic?

  • "So I click on the update---who else is there to discuss it besides me?"

the poster and *possibly* anyone else who also clicks the update. if the poster isn't online, you don't get the option to click it.

lots of way to implement it, but at the very least you're putting out statements that can then spark IM sessions.

i hope you are only joking about the "half the convo" thing. again, there is no reason for anyone to feel that way given a traceable reply system or inline commenting.

  • I think that as the game population grows, more general chat rooms would be really useful, and if a friend's already online, being able to click on their name and join whatever channel they're on would also be a nice feature.  (As would the ability to switch channels if a player so desired.)  To be honest, I'm almost never in Global Chat because, more often than not, when it was still tied to the Help channel it moved far too quickly for me to follow.  I can only imagine how chaotic it would be if there were only one channel after the game goes live.

  • 7 groups + local chat + whatever Help becomes + IM's sound like plenty.  The more I think about all of the alternatives to groups, the more wisdom I see in the concept.

  • I think groups and friends channels are useful, but I like the global chat and help chats too. Maybe these two can be combined somehow. Group chats are good to limit the scope of discussion, but through global/help chats I found random glitch information and few good friends too.

  • Spontaneous party chats are good too and I have made friends from really big groups like New Streets and when I got adopted by FS Refuges I got a load of friends.
