Discontinue old Cubimal series?

The suggestion was made in the Series 2 Cubimal Value List thread to eventually phase out the Series 1 Cubimals, making them unavailable at vendors. This sparked some rather heated debate that was squelched by the fact that it was hijacking a thread that was about something completely different: I figured it was important enough that the discussion warranted its own thread.

This is my take on the debate so far:

Tiny Speck released a new set of Cubimals and specifically called them "Series 2", wrapping them up in newly designed boxes that look completely different from Series 1, and are bought separately. This is reminiscent of real-life collectibles (like Magic the Gathering, as just one of many examples), where new toys/cards/whatever are released each year or so, at which point the older series are discontinued and no longer available in stores. The older series then (if there is a demand for them) go up in value, and can be bought on E-Bay or what-not for more than they were originally sold for in stores. It should be noted that in real-life sometimes older collectibles are re-issued at a later date so that new collectors can more easily find them (as in RainCat's suggestion that Cubimals are treated like Disney movies, taken in and out of "the vault" every once in awhile).

Proponents of the discontinued Cubimal idea say that it makes Cubimal collecting more interesting and exciting, and will help make the older Cubimals more valuable (i.e., not worthless). Opponents say that it is unfair to new players to remove the items from the vendors, and that they should have equal chance of getting any objects that any players before them have had.

I'm sure Tiny Speck has thoughts on this already, but given how wonderful they are at listening to their players and reacting accordingly, what we say here may help shape the future of collectibles in Glitch. What do you think about the topic?

  • The only reason I would like them being discontinued would be to become A CURRANT BILLIONAIRE!

  • TY Stoot...discontinuing the cubis would be totally unfair to all future players. Keeping them gives all players old, new and future the chance to get the collections.

  • NO DONT DISCONTINUE!!!!!!!!!!!

It makes it very unfair to future players and those who have not completed the set. with iMG and setting free cubis, they will become much rarer.

  • Please don't discontinue Series 1! I still haven't collected all of them (and can't afford most cubimalist's prices)

  • I'm glad to hear that TS isn't planning on discontinuing the Series 1 cubis.  I'm not a collector, but it just seems to pander to a competitive, king of the mountain streak in some players.

  • My pennies on discontinuing:  We are in beta.  I would rather have both series available for a while after the game opens up fully, so new players have a chance to get the Series 1 before they vanish completely.  I don't mind phasing it out, but phasing out something before a game completely opens up when it's a collectible that isn't a special item (GNG or Senor Funpickle) just strikes me as a bad idea.

I'd say leave them for 3 - 6 months after the game fully opens and then phase them out. :)

  • "pander to a competitive, king of the mountain streak" . . .  and yet I personally didn't take the idea seriously until two different posters who do not have the set saw the value in discontinuing.

I'm pretty sure "king of the mountain" had absolutely nothing to do with Janitch or Sideburns take on discontinuing.  But hey, way to disparage anyone that doesn't think the way you do.  Good job!

Coming tonight: a post on why the concept of "fairness" has destroyed the MMO genre, and why the games that ignore it, with the exception of WoW which created it, have done much better in general than the games that embrace it.  And an explanation of why it works for WoW but no one else.

  • Nothing is ever fair.  So when will we replace currant with beans?
