Cicadas

They should make Cicadas in Glitch.  The town I live in now is a college town and there is a local ice cream shop that started making Cicada ice cream with Cicadas in it.  It was recently shut down for obvious reasons (damn health department), but I thought it would be funny if Glitch had tons of Cicadas everywhere and you could collect them and make Cicada ice cream, or Cicada pizza, maybe even Cicada martinis!

  • But would they only show up en masse every 13 Glitch-years?

  • Heh I always find it so gross when people eat them! The AP Biology class made cookies out of them and handed them out when the last huge swarm came around a long time ago. But I love the French depiction of them (a la Provence) so I'd be into them being in the game.

Their papery wings are very beautiful.

  • Cicadas are bugs that burrow under the ground for many years and only come back out I believe every 13 and 17 years.  Every 13 or 17 years, there are HUGE bugs, thousands upon thousands of Cicadas flying around.  But when the 13 and 17 years link up, there are so many Cicadas at times you cannot walk on the sidewalk, because there are so many Cicadas that you can't even see the ground.

When I was like 11 there was one of those years, with double Cicadas.  At school for recess the sidewalk leading to the playground was so full of Cicadas you couldn't even see the ground anymore.  They are gross, especially if they get caught in your long beautifully straightened hair -- happened to me this morning :(

  • MicklePickle, well, since each Glitch year is 51.333 days (I believe), they'd arrive every 1.83 years RL time.

  • One summer my brother spent all his time catching them, numbering them with a sharpie marker and then setting them free to see if he could catch one of his marked ones again.  He also put 'em the freezer to see how long it took them to get back to normal (not long, as I recall)...he also tied leashes to them and flew them around the yard like motorized kites.

    Um...ice cream?  Really?

  • I despise cicadas - the noise is maddening,
Posted 18 months ago by Spayem Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I agree with Spayem. Cicadas are noisy and annoying. And I think we live in an area with lots of different batches, because we get some every year. Some years are just worse than others. And no, I don't eat them. And unlike with a computer, you can't mute them.

  • I was just reading about cicadas and thinking what a great addition to Glitch they would make and it looks like the idea has already been proposed!

Maybe cicadas could emerge once a month at a number of random locations, and on those days players could catch them, perhaps in a similar way to fireflies. Maybe people with Tinkering 4 could combine 20-30 cicadas and some copper ingots to make a Teleportation Token.

OR maybe cicadas could be collected and made into Cicada Powder - which when activated would allow players to "sing" to other players in a manner similar to playing musicblocks.

Or none of these and the cicadas could simply emerge once a month, sing their magic song and give players the "cicada sleep" buff, causing Glitches to sleepwalk for a minute or two until the cicadas finish their tune then disappear.

  • the perfect day for the cicadas to invade would be the last day of Fever ::nods::

♥ one of my all time fav bugs ..although i dont think i could eat them

  • They are historically considered edible insects, like ants.  And I'm listening to a bunch of them lately. I live not to far from @Laurali.

  • Laurali,  some of them come back every year

  • According to Wikipedia adult cicadas are capable of feeding. They do it through a feeding tube inserted into the xylem of trees (or other plants I guess), it's rarely attempted on humans. I guess we don't feel plant-like enough. Though to be honest, I wouldn't want cicadas to get a taste of human blood, it's bound to be tastier than Xylem!

  • That last part is disturbing on so many levels, @Skwid.
Posted 16 months ago by Fokian Fool Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Just imagine a mosquito with a 16 gauge proboscis stabbing you and sucking your blood. you just brush it off before it can get you, right? Now imagine two hundred of them flying at you trying to do that. It'd be over in minutes. That scene in the mummy when the scarabs eat the dude alive? Yeah, that. DO NOT FEED THE CICADAS!
Posted 16 months ago by Skwid Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It reminds me of the school production. DON'T FEED THE PLANT!

  • There is nothing like masses of squashed cicadas all over the sidewalk, the streets, your windshield, on your shoes... their slimy goo is disgusting. Thank the  Giants we don't have them where I live in Napa, California. But we have ticks which are  much worse and more harmful to animals and humans.
Posted 16 months ago by napabeth Subscriber! | Permalink
  • No, please dont put those in game.  I agree, their noise can be maddening!

  • +a gazillion @ Ghost - wings like that would be awesome!!!
Posted 16 months ago by CoffeeSnob Subscriber! | Permalink
  • How on Ur do you sleep when the cicadas are calling their mates? I would leave town until they are done with their antics and return to the ground where they belong.  Insects are part of the food chain but there are just too many of them...leave Glitch insect free PuleazE, except for batterflies and butterflies.. Next someone will suggest fleas !
Posted 16 months ago by napabeth Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @NB - only if we can somehow use their legs to jump with!  ;)

  • reminds me of Animal Crossing....a lot

  • I'm with Spayem and Innie--they are So. Loud. I'd have to mute the sound!
Posted 16 months ago by Sheepy Subscriber! | Permalink
  • haha -  I'm not asking for a literal exact cicada sound that is so loud and annoying that it would have to be instantly be muted. If the devs had included the same exact sounds made by many pigs I too would be on mute much of the time.

I'm thinking of the cicadas that our Glitch devs would come up with, magical singing cicadas with a pleasingly pleasant pitch.

@napabeth: Great idea for fleas! ;)
Posted 16 months ago by The Cat Face Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Omg, I hate Cicadas.

@Napa:  Apart from the occasional Cicada, they only come for a couple months every 7 years and every 13 years (I think).  But watch out when those years overlap because then it is Cicada City.

When I was a little girl in gradeschool a Cicada landed on my neck and I cried in front of the whole class, it was so embarrassing.  Ever since then I have had a rivalry with the Cicadas, but I do think they are beautiful until they move.

  • I love the sound a cicada makes when you step on it.  Splat! take that you infernal bug! and tell your little friends to go to the next town. Our Scottie dogs used to eat June bugs. Like cockroaches all these big cricket -like and roach like bugs are horrible. Only a bug lover could like them and have them as pets.

  • Whenever I head out East the cicadas drive me mad. However, grasshoppers taste quite good.

  • as a kid I would always find their brown discarded shells/skin clinging to side of trees.  They were soooooo loud made them seem bigger than they were.
