Friending the devs?

Newbie-ish question: Do the devs like to get friend requests (I mean from strangers) or prefer to meet up with you in the game first? :) [For most people, I'm sure meeting up is preferred; just not sure how devs feel about it.] I'm wondering if a) everybody tries to friend them so they don't like it or if b) they don't get a lot of friend requests, being perceived as "on high," so maybe it makes them feel all warm and fuzzy? lol I have one on my list who met a bunch of us in a group chat window...but is it bad form/annoying to them to get friend requests from people? Seems as if they'd get a whole boatload...even more so now after the bigger test, where maybe before when it was a much smaller family, it wasn't a big deal.
Anyone with an opinion (erm, maybe a dev?) Thanks!

  • I am not sure how the devs feel but personally I like having them as friends and being able to IM them during the game, especially about a bug. I would hope they enjoy having all of us as friends and sometimes it is hard to meet up with one during the game, especially since if you are not friends with them you can't see where they are.

  • I've made several of them friends... some of them have even returned the request : D The devs are a really nice group of people. I get the impression they're just the sort of people you want to take to the pub on your birthday.... the stories would be epic!

They are people, and probably have individual preferences. Being a friend lets you see a lot about where a person is, which has made 'dev watching' a pass time when the world is down. Dunno how they feel about it, but it sure makes passing the time a little more entertaining.

  • If they hated requests with a vile passion, they'd block it.

  • I've got several of the devs on my friends list, and Rayn even friended me back.  I don't think they hate it, but I won't presume to put words in their mouths.

Dev watching while the world is down is pretty fun though - sometimes you catch glimpses of maps that are still in the work, which is neat.

  • Our devs are wonderful I have even had one friend me first. I have added a couple just to dev watch lol  Personally, yes I will happily chat away with them when I have a problem, even chat if were at a party together. BUT I would never IM them just for  the sake of it. They are at work and need to be able to do their jobs with out distractions :)

  • Yes, absolutely...the devs are fine with you friending them. Go right ahead :)

  • Thanks for the input, all. I went ahead and friended them; if they do or don't back, no biggie :)

  • An even BIGGER newbie question... How do you know who the devs are? And how do you "watch" where people are?  *blushes from sounding like an ignoramus*

  • @Hab Nlab, see this page your reading right now. Scroll down there to the bottom, see the word ABOUT. Go click on that! ;)

  • even better, open each dev's profile in a separate tab, and then bookmark the group of tabs.  ;D

so now i can only wonder... who's going to use the api to build a dev-stalking tool?!

  • I'm not sure I can speak for all of us, but my guess is that none of the devs mind being "friended" by players … I know I certainly don't!

Feel free to friend me, and please don't be offended if I don't friend you back.  Those of us that spend a lot of time in the game do tend to get a lot of friend requests, and keeping them all in our friend list can make things a bit unwieldy.

Oh, and I also hope players don't take a lack of response to an IM personally .  Things can get pretty hectic during tests and if I don't get a chance to reply to your IM, it's definitely nothing personal.  I'm often juggling a bunch of different chat windows, bugs, questions, and the like.

So, feel free to friend and if you don't get friended back or if the IM replies are slow to come, just know that it's not because we don't care.  You should "feel" the love from devs in every piggy you nibble and chicken you squeeze!

  • Is that why there are so many pigs named after devs?

  • Dave, go read on the skill table under Animal Kinship V...and that will explain the crazy animal names lol. Definitely has to do with the craziness quotient of the devs and all the players!
