firefly catching

wow, is that lid on *TIGHT*...it sure does take a lot of energy to open it.

I don't know, does that seem right? Seems like for all that energy lost, we should get some animation of our avatars jumping around and making desperate arm scooping motions.

Just a suggestion...

  • It was fun though. I even managed to fill a jar and make a crystal :)

  • +1 for this idea, and for fireflies!

Also, either make more fireflies or make them easier to catch. Or maybe have the jar fill up at like 20 fireflies but make them unable to fly out. Either way, I can see a large amount of people getting annoyed at the current system.

  • Aldaris, I went back later and because very few people were about, I got all 7 in one go.

  • yeah, it's better when there are less people. It occurs to me the point of the whistle is to avoid the need to animate jumping around. And I swallowed that whistle, for cripes' sake. It did NOT look comfortable at all. Surely those little buggers should be flocking to me.

Did anyone else see the really big one? Totally had to be Tinkerbell.

  • the energy is probably you have to really huff and puff if you want a whistle in your larynx to be heard by little firefly ears.

  • Some players say that once they've crystamilized their fireflies, the jar disappeared... for me it stayed and was reusable... what happened to yours (if you managed to get one in the last test)

  • I didn't get this quest yesterday, FWIW. I'm not sure what was supposed to trigger it.

(It might be because I haven't been able to finish the ingot quest, because that seems to require getting in at the start of a project to donate.)

  • I saw it nanookie.... I tried so many times to capture it, to no avail.

I can imagine that capturing fireflies would be easier alone... but even by myself, I was only able to get up to six of them. Plus, I don't think it's in Tiny Speck's interest to make something in Glitch that can only be done properly alone.

Still, it was an unfinished design and I'm sure some changes will be made before we're allowed to see it again.

  • I thought mine had gone but when I check my inventory it's back. Either I was mistaken or maybe it moved to another bag when it emptied?

  • Btw, whistling to the butterflies plays the cutest sound track ever... Will post a link to the music (yea, i recorded) in the morning. :) [check back later]

  • @Clare it appears that the quest was triggered by traveling to Heckes street, which was hidden so you would have needed someone with a teleport set there to take you for the first time.

  • stoot also ended up releasing some fireflies in somewhat sump in the last hour of the test.

but if you weren't around somewhat sump in the last two hours of the test you wouldn't have encountered them.

  • Here's a song played when you're catching those bugs: goo.gl/LBsC0 :D

  • Yep: it's the whistling that's hard — that's what uses all the energy.

And as much as I'd love (you have no idea, really) to have different avatar animation states for just about everything, rendering the spritesheets for the avatars is our biggest performance bottleneck right now and until we have a chance to speed that up, we won't be adding more (and even then, only in very rare cases).

Also, there are few different whistles: when you open a jar, you'll hear a randomly chosen one.

On the other hand, you'll be able to do some pretty cool stuff with crystals in the future …

  • All I ever hear in my head when I read about fire fly's is this. In fact I think it goes along with the whole game. I could play it in silence and just have this track on in the background. I know my UK friends will know it :)
