Is Glitch drawing you out of your shell?

Here in the forums I have seen frequent mention of the game's appeal to those who lack social skills...withdrawn, perhaps a tiny bit agoraphobic. Come out of the closet and confess. I was a 90 pound weakling and at the beach they used to throw sand in my face.
Now since I have been playing Glitch since April I am WONDER WOMAN.....Napalm Beth
Glitch has great restorative properties..Now if only it were Wednesday and the game would be on.

  • I still have poor social skills, but thanks to Glitch I now have another addiction to distract me from that fact :D

    Roll on Wednesday :)

  • No, can't say that, unfortunately. I have 20 years experience in sales and customer service, so I'm naturally an extrovert, who loves reaching out a helping hand to others. That being said, if you need a helping hand, let me know, and I'll gladly do what I can. Unfortunately, work has been calling my name lately and I haven't been able to test much this month, and most of next month isn't looking good either, but look at my contact info on my profile page and drop me a line and I'd be glad to help where I can. :D

  • I spend all my working life talking, helping and being polite to people, so I get very very anti-social off duty.
I'm quite bad in real life, if I'm not working, I just shut out the rest of the world to relax.

Talking with online people's different though, I find it quite relaxing as they have a volume control...or better still, no volume :D
Plus if they happen to get irritating I can just click the handy little x in the corner and *poof* they vanish.

If only the customers I deal with at work had those features... so many x's I'd click on and so many many mute buttons I'd be pressing lol!

  • Oddly, I feel as though I haven't made any friends in this world. I puzzle over it, as I have made friends easily in other worlds/games, and I not sure what is different now - except of course me.

  • I've only been playing MMOGs for about 2 years now. I was completely freaked out the first time I realized that other people could interact with me and vise versa. LOL I tend toward the introvert end of the spectrum, but I manage pretty well in groups. The most surprising things for me since I started Glitch are the forums and group chats. I definitely feel more comfortable expressing myself and chatting casually in a group room during game play. I love that you can pop in and have short conversations and then go on about your business. I'm less comfortable meeting up with other Glitches in the street. I so want to be able to wave!

I am really happy for anyone who is home-bound and has found MMOGs. What an amazing life changing social tool! They helped me get through a very difficult period of my life. Fun thread Napalm! And Wren, I'll bet you'll be overwhelmed with IMs next test!

  • Passing Glitches in the world is always odd for me. I'm never sure if I should stop and chat or if they're busy or if I'm busy or...
Usually by the time I've decided if I should say hi or not, they're long gone lol
Other times they're AFK, so I find I'm having a conversation with myself.
Group forums and chats are much easier to deal with.
Posted 18 months ago by Ebil Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I still find the chat windows awkward to use while playing.  I am lucky in the respect that I came from another mmo, so recognized many players here and had an immediate friend base to draw from. Lucky me :)  I keep hoping to manage the chat better, but some may think me unfriendly due to my slow typing skills.  Often by the time I am able to type a reply, the person has left the area.

I can sympathize with Ebil.  My last position in transportation, as a dispatcher, was heavy in customer phone contact.  Try explaining to a vendor why merchandise is still in his warehouse instead of on the selling floor in a store! Trucks break down, have accidents, bad weather.... Nooo excuse!  Come to think of it, after a day, week, etc. of this, I did start to turn off my phone and become generally anti- conversation except for emergencies.

So,while I am still shell shocked, I think playing Glitch is helping me to reach out to online friends while gaming, and definitely helping with typing skills :)

  • Now this you may find funny: I am an extrovert (well, duhhhhhh! to those who know me; that's not the funny bit), and I do talk a lot during the game. But I find this game to be my "quiet time"; that is to say, because it's not in real life and I'm not around real humans actually speaking aloud, this is kind of my introvert respite. So I guess I'm 180 degrees from some here. LOL

  • OK... you'll get a laugh out of this. Sometimes I wander around Ur and I'll see a pretty Glitchess and think "wow, she's gorgeous" and stop for a second look. I'll briefly think about making conversation but then get all shy and run off.

Kinda silly when a) she doesn't ACTUALLY look like that, it's just an avatar and b) chances are she's probably a guy in real life :-)

  • LMAO Snazzlefrazz!!!! Hmmm, in-game flirting might be fun. After all, we do role-play quite a lot in the game. So what if the person wasn't that gender in RL? tee hee. Maybe I'm just excusing my own desire for a bit of naughtiness (after all, I am a married woman and I did propose to Pepper_Rose in another forum thread :D )

  • @ebil @welshcorgi - i also have a hard time interrupting others gameplay, switching from moving or jumping to the chat windows and i always type so slow, they are gone before i can think of something interesting to say or want to give something and can't make up my mind what to give for a gift before they vanish too. i wish we had quick buttons for common phrases - like "hi" "want to chat?, " have a great day" or "follow me".  right now i just think hello as i jump over you on my way to find more glitchiness.

  • Welsh Corgi & Ebil, I can relate to both of you! Even though I'm very quiet during the tests, 90% of the time I'm "listening" to you Rascalmom interact with everyone! You are amazing..you always greet me,which is so nice and I really don't know how you play and chat at the same time soooo welll. Last but not least you crack me up,especially when your waiting for the game to open!

  • My social skills are directly related to how distracted I am visually---I am a speed reader but must look at my keyboard to type legibly else I spout fluent gibberish.
Well, that and arthritis combine to make me pretty reticent after hours of extensive play.
In RL I'm quite the chatterbox.
My apologies to friends and potential friends who might start to initiate conversation only to see me R U N N O F T 'cause my fingers are too lame to stretch out over the keyboard.
Bless you devs for allowing mouse support. Some days that's the only way I can play.

  • It hasn't drawn me out of my shell yet. I like Glitch and the Community coming together here, although I find that chatting is a little difficult in the game (except in global chat but that won't be here at launch) and like someone above said, by the time you finally get to talk to the other person as your running past they have long gone...
I play another game where I have been a paying member for at least 6 years and  I have many people on my friends list there, but some of them I hardly talk to, I don't go out and "do" things with those people on that game, but they remain there ever the constant companions.  I have run around adding people here without even without a conversation, brief or otherwise and I am left wondering how do you feel that I've added you?  I added the devs so I could spy on them and make myself jealous where their in the game and I am not (I wanna be on too!! lol) But back to the shell thing, I've enjoyed playing/ testing Glitch and look forward to much much more.  . o O (wednesday yet?)

  • I can't say that Glitch has changed how I act towards people specifically, but it has changed what I do to interact with people. With other MMOs I barely use the global chat, and you'll be hard-pressed to make me post in a forum that wasn't either the Glitch community forums or a (now defunct!) forum that had the domain of Belize. Also, I very rarely accept friend requests from people I am intimate friends with (and currently I have two in the world, aside from my cat).

I'm still a bit quiet in the global chat, but I'm still surprised that I posted in there at all. The community is just so... nice. It's a real nice change from the fear of being speared with flaming, unintelligible rhetoric.

  • I tend to play in the dark (little one is sleeping in the same room) which limits my keyboarding conversation to "QWER? yhous hjeve enyu ononpowed?" or something similarly painful to read.

so no, i'd say..opposite. although, I've never attended so many apocalypse parties in RL!
Posted 18 months ago by A Magical Unicorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I know about the typing in the dark issues very well. Usually my other half and dog are asleep, especially during the parties that tend to go on 'till around 2am my time.
I have to try really hard not to be amused by anything in the last hour of the apocalypse parties, as I have a really bad habit of laughing out loud at things that amuse me online and last time I did that in the early house of the morning, I got a pillow thrown across the room at me and told I was lucky it wasn't a glass of water lol

  • Not necessarily, but only because I utilized other avenues to draw me out of my shell when I was a lot less social. I'm 26 now but when I was 17 and off to college I was rather shy. I was one of the first few on MySpace and Facebook (back when it was TheFacebook) and I was always on AIM, ahaha. I met people through my university's online forums and then we would all meet up in real life. Then I came out of the closet and all of these gay guys tried being social with me but for the most part it wasn't my scene. And then I started participating in student orgs of all sorts and really met a lot of people that way, as well. Overall I'd become rather social, though I still remained inconfident and shy. And I still do to this day, though I help run two Meetup groups and am always with friends. I even had a friend move in next-door so we're always hanging out, and about 4 or 5 of my friends all live within half a mile of me, ahaha. And I throw parties monthly.

So, long story short, I was already rather socialized by the time I got to Glitch. So much so that I talk far too much, clearly. But I do like the people I've met here and I feel I've made some good connections here, though not as well as many others here have. I think I rub people the wrong way because I'm very candid and always speak my mind, lol.

EDIT: That, and I know quite a bit about social phobia, asperger's, and autism, and other psychosocial concerns that impact someone's social ability, as I'm a psychotherapist... so I tend to really challenge myself, sometimes, to practice what I preach.

  • Some of you who have seen my sis, SHOff, and I interact, may think us a bit deranged! (Just a bit)!  We will interject, from time to time, mostly to let you know how inept we can be sometimes in the game (we crack ourselves up). Someone asked us the other day if we were newbies (level 30 & 31) because we were stuck in the Amazing Race (really, we couldn't get out because neither one of us could win)!  But thanks to Travinara, she rescued us with her TP5 skill.  I do enjoy interacting, but I tend to read what others say more!  And Rascalmom is the Greeter of all Greeters - she's the best!  I want to be like her when I grow up (lol - I have 2 grandchildren)! If you see me, hug me, kiss me, moon me, whatever and I will return in like!  I do love my Glitches - hope you love me too! • Cerulean, I think it's great you speak your mind, sir! Also, your comment interests me about the pyschosocial aspects you mention, as my four-year-old has mild to moderate autism, and I know of at least two young folks (17-20ish I think) in Glitch who both have Aspberger's and are both sweethearts. I wrestle already with how much gaming/media we'll want my son to participate in since on the one hand, it does open up a whole easier way of socializing for folks with those problems, yet on the other hand I've been told it can pull them from real life more and possibly contribute to their already-diminished ability to think dynamically rather than one directionally. Hmmm. IM me next game if you wanna give me some thoughts on that, would appreciate it:) Thanks!

  • No, I find that I'm socializing less in this game than in other MMO's. The chat is awkward, there are no guilds, and I mostly don't fit in with the rest of the players.
Posted 18 months ago by Fussycat Subscriber! | Permalink
  • No, it doesn't really draw me out of my shell any more than any other online game I've played.

I am one that tends to do my own thing and keep to myself, in games and out (rather introverted when not around friends I know really well). I'm more than willing to sit and chat with someone if they start the convo, but otherwise I don't like interrupting others. I do tend to find a few close friends over time in games like this and feel more comfortable around them and will start convos and such if I see them. I'm the same way on every MMORPG that I have played.

I do agree that chatting online with people is far less taxing than face to face in real life, and I can do that while I'm chilling online. I don't have a very public job, but I have a very low threshold for being around people in person, especially large groups of people, so during the M-F week, going to work and being around my 8 coworkers is plenty for me, and it takes me the whole evening to regenerate for the next day (not counting sleep time). I usually save time out with my friends for Friday or Saturday, and occasionally go do things with them maybe one evening in a week (as I did yesterday evening).

  • LOL Nalyn and ShOff, you two crack me up. Every time I see you I come away scratching my bum thinking 'how in the heck did those two manage that' :D

What Nalyn is referencing (because it's a handy discovery) is using the TP5 Summon skill to 'unstick' a player. They were in the race, had been there for ages, tried a number of reloads and reboots, the 'would you like to leave' wasn't appearing, it was the wee hours so no devs around... we figured it was worth a shot - it worked! Nalyn was transported to Baqala (to start a different kind of race) and ShOff was liberated from the race as a result. Fun times!

As for social... I have a seasonal ebb and flow to my entire life. Part of the Adult Student Lifestyle, I think. Glitch has been a nice supplement to some of the thinner points, because it presently fits in my life... especially since I moved to working night shifts. Overnight/Graveyard shifts kill most social things (I have a number of day activities, but they're mostly 'solo' efforts). Glitch helps with some of the night creature isolation: as much as family, great friends who make time when they can, and a healthy dose of 'just go do something' in between does.

I ruffle my fair share of feathers... and you are two I have a huge amount of respect for. Even though we sometimes have diametrically opposed views, you've always managed to stay civil and focused on the point you're trying to make. It's sparked some great discussions! The best part, at the end of it... everyone is able to walk away with something to chew on.

You've always been able to move through snags with a mature attitude and not waste energy holding grudges. It may not be sunshine and roses, but it definitely fits!

  • @AmberJeni: Nope:) I don't think so either!
Posted 18 months ago by RM Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @ AmberJeni, nope, not a negative at all, unless you yourself want it to be.

Everyone's different, and people all get different things out of a site like this. Some like the company, some aren't really that interested in the social side of things here.

I think everyone fits in somehow, even those who don't think they do. If they didn't fit in, they wouldn't be playing. As far as I'm concerned, if you're playing, you're in.

  • Well to anyone who knows me well or even slightly they know shyness is far from one of my qualities but in Mmo type games i have always been the quiet one reading and contemplating, I have always been more prone to sit back and watch a global chat and see what kind of a crowd is already established , i was never one to shy away from a conversation that was directed towards me and welcoming entertained the idea of meeting new people. Until i decide if ill be with that game for a matter of time longer then "now" i am a fly on the wall categorizing the community.

During my first test i was met with such exuberant friendliness and just all around good people willing to help, teach, chat and every shade of grey in between, That i have fallen not only in love with the Game but the community within it making me want to not only hear everyone stories but to interact and exchange with them and make a place and name for myself being yet another helpful voice in the sea of extraordinary awesome sauce. :D

  • My social skills are minimal.  I have no sibs and grew up as an AF brat.  I majored in Sociology in college hoping that would help but I am still a social failure.  I used to go to parties where everyone stood around talking, laughing, drinking, snacking, etc.  They all seemed to be enjoying themselves with no planned activities.  So, I threw a party with lots of drinks and snacks and great music.  Everyone sat around, silent and staring.  I passed around snacks and they just passed them on.  I handed out drinks and they just silently sipped them.  Then they left one by one.  I was an utter failure, nothing I did seemed to make me fit in.  At Faunasphere, for the first time since the third grade, I began to fit in somewhat.  I began to contribute and people actually seemed to like me, what utter joy!  Now many of my friends are here and, although I am not ridiculously popular and play alone most of the time, I feel the Love.  It actually is nice to fit in and you can do it here by joining a group and contributing here and there.  I am enjoying this social thing very late in life but it is very nice!  Thanks my old and new Friends!

  • Thank you, Trav!
And Cerulean, I know what you mean.
Being an Aspie, it's hard to communicate in general. But in Glitch, in particular, my problem is that my gaming background is what most would call a "hardcore gamer" (although the real hardcore gamers would argue that I'm nowhere near hardcore enough) whereas the majority (I may be wrong here but it feels like the majority) of Glitch players come from social gaming background. In a way it's a whole different style of communication. It's all about being neighbourly rather than facing each other on a battle field.
I will be interesting to observe how Glitch will manage to bring these two worlds together.
Posted 18 months ago by Fussycat Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Awww, Brib, we love ya! And good luck, Fussycat; as I said above elsewhere, I can only imagine some of the difficulties you may deal with socially and communication-wise. In some ways, playing Glitch and seeing how a couple other players with Aspberger's are getting some good interactions is helping shape how I might think about my son's future, gaming, etc. We'll have to see. And I would like to say, please holler at me in IM if you ever need something in game, even just a brief moment of chatting!

  • I'm pretty outgoing IRL, but I definitely need alone time to recharge my batteries.  I find interacting with my fellow Glitchies don't drain the batteries in the same way IRL interaction does.

I am also a fast typist and I can become seriously frustrated by lag in chat - I'll be barreling away and only then realize the chat window is reflecting 1 letter out of every 10 I've typed.

  • Can't say that Glitch has improved my social skills 'cus I'm just naturally very interactive and sociable. However, it has made me wet my pants, laugh until I cried ... and sometimes even when my sister isn't around. Nalyn btw.

It's just been fun seeing the old gang and meeting new. I suppose just like the rest of you, I holler at the screen when I'm making a recipe and discover I used the last @#$$&#@ parsnip, my hoe breaks during the project and my $%*#@* tinkertool needs repair. Now that's what I call an interactive game. :D
