Solution for "flash local storage denied" error

I couldn't find any other mention of this, and it took a far amount of googling to finally find the solution, so I will record it here for posterity:

I was receiving a "flash local storage denied" message on my Windows laptop the first time I would try to connect to the game each session.  It would offer me the option to "continue at my own risk", which I would do, but all subsequent attempts to connect were met with a "unable to reach game server" message.

I saw this behaviour no matter which browser (Chrome, IE, Firefox) I tried.  I checked all my flash settings (local and global) and ensured that all privacy options were disabled in the browsers.  Still no luck.  The Glitch test page, or the debug version of flash, didn't indicate any problems.

I could, however, connect on my Mac.  This lead me to suspect that something out of the ordinary was overriding the flash settings on my PC.

So, the solution: an mms.cfg file was present in the Flash settings area that was globally overriding all the settings. When I renamed the mms.cfg file, everything started working again.

I found the file here:
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash\mms.cfg
(or C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash\mms.cfg on a 32bit machine)

Where this file came from, I am not sure (although I suspect, since this is a work laptop, my company had something to do with it).

Anyway, for anyone else who encounters this problem, try renaming the mms.cfg file to see if this fixes things.

(of course, a more elegant solution would be to identify the precise property in the text file which is causing the problem and change this, rather than the "nuke form orbit" approach I have taken, however I'll leave that for someone else to discover).

Happy Glitching!

  • thank you.  I'll try that next time.  I've also had this happen but was still able to get to game server just without any music until I completely closed all my browser windows and started over.
