More Vendor Related Economy Woes

Has anyone else noticed a bit of a problem with buns? There is exactly zero incentive to make them yourself.

The recipe calls for one salt and one flour.

The cost of an allspice is 3 currants. On Auction it's currently 6.6 though it deviates by about 3 in either direction, more with some frequency.

The cost of a flour is 7 currants. On Auction it's currently around 6.7.

All in all, depending on how savvy a seller you are, you can make anywhere between 9.7 and 13.6 currants per set of ingredients, give or take commission and listing fees.

That said, why would anyone make the bun themselves, expending additional time and energy, when a vendor offers them for less than the actual value of its ingredients?

  • I make buns myself to save money.
I usually use sammiches for donation.

  • Make them all the time myself. I also harvest the wheat and allspice too. It costs me nothing but the energy and time. And I probably use less energy and time making it that way than trying to make the equivalent money.

  • My point was that you are in no way actually saving money :P

I would suggest doing the same (I donate sammiches as well) except buying the buns you use and selling excess flour and allspice.

@Fokian Fool - The point is that you would end up with more buns if you just sold your allspice and flour to get the money you need.

  • To make sammiches?  Sammiches are yummy.  :D

  • Yep. :) Sammiches are wonderful. Very easy way to take a bit of time to increase the value of your meat.

  • Here's the thing though. Allspice doesn't cost 3 currants. It costs 2 energy for 12! That makes the "real" cost to someone truly doing it themselves about 0.16c (food can be bought at 1c to 1e), you're just paying a huge markup on auctions for it, partially due to project phases requiring spices.

And flour costs uh....0.5e (1/2 a squeeze for those with high AK, 1 squeeze for those with moderate AK so up to 1 energy) + again 0.5e if you are making many flours at once, 1e if making them one at a time.

All in all, to make the ingredients should "cost" less than 2c.

The problem with all of these "not worth it" threads is that you (general) are, for some ridiculous reason, pretending that you would purchase every ingredient. If you are buying the makeable ingredients for your food, it will be expensive. That is because the auctions are very high for raw ingredients.

  • Yes, but I think L.T.'s point is that if, you gather the spice and grain, and then, instead of making buns, you auction off the spice and grain, the money you will make from auction will buy more buns than you could have made with the raw ingredients you auctioned.  This may will be true - I haven't done the checking and the math and don't particularly want to.

So L.T. may be right, but I think what many of us think is that we are not playing glitch to see how much money we can make.  We are playing to have fun, and each of us has our own way of having the most fun with Glitch.  I, like many others, get real joy from travelling around Ur, gathering ingredients, making food and then either selling at auction or giving the food away.  We're simply not interested in being the richest, them most experienced or the highest leveller.  We're interested in having a Glitch of a good time!

  • Oh, Hawkwell I totally agree. :) I have so many achievements and streets traveled because I love to see this wonderful world and do as many different things as possible. :) And you have my motivation about right too.

Thing is, I would PREFER to make my own buns. I have lots of allspice and flour. But why should I do that? I'd also like to make tortillas and THOSE can't be bought. So as it is now, I'll just buy buns and make tortillas. :P

The endpoint basically boils down to, TL;DR "Wah, wah, moan, moan, why do the vendors sell what I want to make  :(?"
