Adopt-a-Newbie?

Edit: This is a pick-your-own program! Check the list in the first reply to this thread for a list of available newbies and mentors. MENTORS AND NEWBIES WILL NOT BE ASSIGNED TO EACH OTHER. You have to choose them yourself. :) Arii's a busy lady.

Original post: So I had this idea.

Greeters are wonderful people. I love the idea of Greeters. I think they should absolutely keep doing exactly what they're doing, because they're saints. It's not a perfect system; some people slip through the cracks and don't get Greeted (myself included). That's alright.

But what about afterwards? Greeters are great in the short-term, but they can't really convey the kinds of culture and etiquette of the group dynamic that we expect. So I propose (for those newbies and potential mentors who are interested!) an Adopt-A-Newbie program. I, personally, have been feeling alienated from all the new players, mostly because I don't know any. All my friends in Glitch are old hands at this, and most of them were beta-testing long before I was. If I knew some newbies and I had a couple to look after who I could develop a relationship with outside "Where do I get salt?", I believe I'd feel a lot more warm-fuzzy fondness towards the newbie population as a whole. I'd get a lot more reward for my effort, because I'd be able to see them grow and learn and become self-reliant, rather than just linking them to wherecanigetpapers.com and having done with it.

What do you guys think? :D Anyone else who will be a mentor with me?

And here's how we'll manage this. If you want to have a mentor, please post here saying so. I'll keep a list in the next post of everyone who wants one, and mentors can go through and pick the ones they think are cutest (posting here which ones, of course, so I can keep track). Or, y'know, whatever criteria they choose. I'll remove names as people are adopted. Any improvements you can think of?

  • Great idea!  I think mentoring is much needed.  This wonderful game really can't be explained in 5 minutes.

  • I don't mind adopting one.  Looks like they're all taken for now- but keep me in mind for later?

  • I absolutely love this idea!

I am a newbie and just started Glitch last week. I'm currently Level 11 and still getting the hang of things. I gotta say that I really love the community, and I enjoy helping people, so hopefully once I learn enough I can mentor others as well! :o)

I typically play 8PM - 10PM Mondays to Fridays (EST) since I work during the day. I'll play off and on during the weekend as well.

Would anyone please adopt me and be my mentor? :D I'd really appreciate it!

  • I'll adopt Vickinator :)  See you in-game!

  • My level is roughly same with yours, but I am beta tester, so I believe my experience can teach you some.

E : I am free to be hired, keep in mind that my time zone is GMT+7, see if you can fit that time

  • Hey there!

I'm level 10... less than a week newbie...  I'm figuring this game out, but know it doesn't hurt to know some folks...  So, anyone interesting in a loose mentorship?  I still like to figure things out, but several of the parts of the game require other folks...

  • I would very much like to have someone available for poking a bit with silly questions :)

  • P.S. Oh my god I wrote a freaking book. How embarrassing.

Hooray! I was adopted! Now I'm wondering how do we actually get in touch with our mentors? I tried to send a letter and the letter thing took my money and everything but maybe it didn't go through? Oh and guess who discovered there's a character limit on private/mail messages. What's up with that? What if you're, you know, wordy? I use too many words. Hmph. I wonder if I could attach a note to the letter. Can you attach more than one thing? Maybe I could attach five notes!

Anyhow, so, yeah. How do we have conversations? I've been playing the game quite a bit the past couple days and I keep looking up at that little list thing that shows which of your friends are online but so far I haven't been online at the same time as my person. Is there a way to use the IM thing to leave messages? Or do both people have to be online at the same time?

Is there some obvious thing I'm missing here? I feel dumb.

Hey, I just figured out someone named Drumroll Please said something to me a day or two after I joined! All this time I thought that had something to do with all the announcements everywhere about people getting badges and stuff. Like the game was doing drumrolls for everyone's achievements. How do I say something back?

All right, what I'm trying to get at is this: I need communication help.

P.S. Groups are scary. I was improperly socialized and I don't know how to behave around people I don't know. Which is why I haven't tried to get information or connect with others that way.

  • Sounds like fun! SirGergis, loose mentorship is probably what I'd be providing to anyone, so I'll adopt you :)

  • I don't know if I have the time or patience to outright adopt a newb, but the sole reason why I learned the Tinkering skill is so I could put low level tools on auction for cheap for the new guys. It may not seem like huge savings, but 25 to 50 currants go a long way when you're first starting out. (That, and I don't know how people can justify selling frying pans for like $250 when they go for $125 at the vendors.)

  • @Sirentist -- Yeah, sorry, I'm using my college internet, and it is too slow for getting on Glitch in the afternoons and evenings during peak hours. I'm about to log in right now, and I will see your  message. Communication IS one of the things that isn't as refined as it could be in Glitch; I think the devs are working on it. I'll be sending you and the other two newbies I adopted info on how to get ahold of me when I'm not in the game. :)

  • I was never greeted and have yet to talk to anybody in game. I have been learning everything on my own which is plenty of fun, but I would be more than happy to have a mentor. For the record I am on maybe 30 minutes to and hour on weekdays and maybe 2 hours Friday-Sunday, so I am consistently active but not huge amounts of time active.

  • Another option--occasionally click on the "info" of players around you, and if you find newbies, open an IM window or local chat and offer to answer questions. I've done that with a few people and most have had some questions. That way, there are no scheduling issues.

@Sirentist--if you have made someone your "buddy" (friend), their name will be listed on the right side of the screen. You can click on it to open an IM window (above the "Local Chat") window. If you click on a player in game, you will get a window with an option to open an IM window. You can also click the "info" option to see what level they are.

  • Happy to be a mentor.  Some free advice to newBEES, you can click on your name on the upper right in the game or on the home page under enter the world and click on WARDROBE. Get yourself a new shirt.  There are plenty of free options.

  • MAM and Hogosha: I didn't see anybody pick you up. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have and help you out a bit if you still need it. Like said above click on my name and and me to your friends list and IM me in game when you need to. I am on ET time in the USA.

  • I am willing to pick up someone. I love this idea of taking care of newbie. When I was a newbie, I get so much help from everyone around me and it was really helpful. I used to never say anything on a MMO, but glitch change that.

I work, so I am not constantly on. But I will be happy to answer question when I am on. Just IM me! Hopefully someone who doesn't have a mentor yet will pick me!

  • I am looking for a mentor. I am just getting out of the initial stages of the Glitch were you run everywhere collecting everything you can get your little hands on. I know a few directions I want to go in but I am unconnected from the community. I would like to correct that.

    Please Adopt Meh
Posted 14 months ago by Darganis Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I am also looking for a mentor. Been just collecting stuff randomly for the past three days or so, with no real direction either. Just running around petting, nibbling, massaging, milking, squeezing, scraping, mining and harvesting everything I can find. I'd like to buy a house though. So I'm saving up slowly.

Posted 14 months ago by Jaydia Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Hi, the idea isnt really new, i was doing this ever since, but i like it being a group effort !
Only suggestion would be a name change, with something based on an eye-to-eye level. Adoption implies a hierarchy and a parent-child relation, which is not the way i treat the new glitches that i established such friendship with.
And it will also have a snowball effect, cause i always suggest to glitches not to thank me so much or feel "guilty", but feel free and pass on the kindness to others when time has come. Think that systems works out very well so far. Had no complaints at least ;)
Oh, almost forgot, i am also offering my support for newcomers in the sense of this thread. IM me or meet me around Ur :)

  • Darganis, Mormoran, Jaydia--if you haven't found a mentor yet, feel free to add me as a friend and IM me next time you're on, I'd be happy to adopt you!

  • And Gabalong, Ms Muffin, and Alegop, if you haven't found mentors yet, I'd love to mentor you guys! I'll send each of you some mail. Add and IM me if you see me online :D

@StevenSoul Perhaps the title should be Mentor-a-Newbie? :)
Posted 14 months ago by Millie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @StevenSoul -- Thanks for volunteering! :D
You're right, "Adopt" does imply a parent-child relationship. However, you seem to find a negative connotation in the idea. I find "adopt"--and also 'student-teacher relationship' (which is similar to but not exactly the same as parent-child, and also closer to what we're experiencing with newbie-adoption)--actually really accurate to what we're doing here. In an ideal world, the role of the teacher/parent is to encourage the student/child, give them the resources to succeed, and help them grow into valuable members of the community. And, here's the key thing, it's a one-way street. Teachers and parents don't expect to get anything out of the deal other than the pride they feel when their student/child succeeds.

So too do I not expect anything from the newbies I adopt. I'm doing this because I *want* to help them, because someone *should* help them, because I realized (after a very eloquent thread by Xev) that we can't sit around bitching about how things used to be better back in Beta when we could be out in Ur getting our hands dirty helping the newbies. I think that the biggest change since we opened hasn't been the influx of newbies--it's been the psychological shift in the brains of the beta-testers. It happened to me, and it happened to a lot of other betas I know: We immediately assumed that it was the End of Ur as We Know It (which, off topic: Totally dibs on filking that--don't touch it.) and it isn't, as long as we get out there being as awesome as we were in beta.

When people adopt a child, they do so out of the goodness of their heart. They do it because that child needs a home, needs guidance and love. That's why I don't think that "Adopt-a-Newbie" has a negative connotation in the slightest.

  • I am fairly new to the game, and having explored on my own for a while with a modest amount of success and done a moderate amount of research, I am interested in dealing with someone who actually knows what they are doing. Any chance for a bit of helping-hand-info and perhaps advice to be passed on?
Posted 14 months ago by Ivan Zecat Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Aril: Well, as i said i fully support the things youre doing an dim quite sure, you´re doing it best. But if you ask any of the glitches i helped (or me, who has been helped and "enlightened" too), im sure noone would report they ever felt like a kid being taken by the hand. Or that i was behaving as a parent to them. I dont like the connotation that parents usually think they know how things should or must be, and they want theri kids to follow those social rules mostly. But in glitch its different, its has all the childish and the fun and so on, that most grown up lack in real life nowadays. So i always advise and give hinte and answer questions, ang provide gifts, so on ... but i dont know whether those glitches will follw this or that, glitch world is big enough for what we cant yet imagine now ;)
Just my opinion though and a name

Thanks for the suggestions, though, and thank you for helping the newbies on the street. <3

  • i just started playin yesterday, im lvl 5 now and im liking it, and think Glitch has alot of potential, im picking it up pretty well as far as figuring things out, but i would like to make some friends so if you see me running around or just wanna say hi, yall are more then welcome
Posted 14 months ago by Blackofnight Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Aril: Lol, i don´t know, why you actually project this onto a personal level, connecting it with our own parent experiences. Anyway, I´m working with a lot of parents and kids in difficult situations, and if you look at most "educational systems" you find that they basically follow a similar way as i expressed. But lets keep it simple at this point, dont wanna have another thread with near 1000 posts discussing ;)
Another thing, should we actively "pick up" someone on the list now or should we offer it here and see who´s choosing us?
