What does a giant want, really?

I spent a good deal of the last test trying to figure out what the giants want in terms of donations. Sure, I can do that by (expensive) trial and error. But - am I missing something? - it might be even better if the giants gave clues. So a giant that really valued mining might say, "Nice asparagus, Plurp, but what I really want is metal." Or, you know, some such.

As they currently exist, giants remind me of bad relationships I've had, in which my partners would tell me, in some detail, what I did that they didn't like, but would give me no clue as to what I could do that would please them. I was not a fan of such relationships.

  • they all want gems. beautiful, shiny, but ultimately worthless gems!

tho i agree, it would be nice if the giants were interested in different items that reflected their personalities.

the giants all seem very similar and without personality as yet.

  • Even if they all wanted gems, it would be nice if they'd say so. I really hate games that make me guess which of a thousand things to use in a particular situation.

  • Gems, music boxes, meat. They like a lot of things.

  • They want everything you have :). Like any proper bearded giant :).

  • As far as I can tell, they give you favor points in proportion to the cost of the donated item (which you can get via the auctions UI)... something like 1 favor point = 10 currants.

  • If you watch the Glitch video the Giants seem to have loads of personality and yet in Glitch itself they don't even have individual designs for their shrines (except the emblem on the front).

  • Yeah, it is kind of sad that the giants are just greedy, and not more whimsical in their desires.

  • I'm sure the giants will end up having personalities before the game launches. keep in mind, this is an alpha.

I too was trying to figure out what to donate to the giants. I have found that they like cooked meals a little better than plain meat, but not enough to balance out effort/cost.

More interestingly, the amount of favor I would get wants directly based on the number of meat I gave. I forget the exact numbers, but I think I was getting the same favor for 30 meat that I would for donating 50. I misclicked once and donated a few hundred meat, and got a few hundred favor, so it does take the number into account. But I bet there are donation levels E.G. 10-20 gets 15 favor, 20-50 gets 35 favor, etc.

  • i was trying out different donations to the giants this past run, and for both raw and cooked food, it seems like that giants give around (energy level)/10 favor points.

doesn't seem to apply to blended/cocktail drinks, though.

    favor points for gems:
    diamond 200 (i think)
    luminous moonstone 100
    ruby 70
    sapphire 40
    amber 20

musicblock around 40, exact amount depends on the type of musicblock.

as mentioned, as the giants are given more personality, this may change.

  • Have you tried shrine powder recently, Hburger? I think they might have changed it.

(I only recently started using shrine powder, actually... before that I was just mining and giving it all to the giants. Given the 1000-point steps of the reward structure, I'm not entirely sure that this strategy is any worse.)

This weekend, I noticed a popup, like the one that happens for spinach, although I didn't see a count-down on it. It just appeared after I used shrine powder and until I made a donation.

  • That's what I noticed also, clare: the popup-timer thingie appeared when you used shrine powder but without a countdown timer, and if you hovered over it, it said something about "your next donation" being increased in value. It was not necessary to race quick-as-a-bunny to make the donation before the sparkles disappeared.

What I did not try was whether the popup thingie meant ANY shrine donation would be increased, or only one to the giant whose shrine got sprinkled. Did anyone try this?

  • Hmm. I tried to powder on the last day of the latest test, and got the same way to narrow timeslot as usual, with no countdown. But.. Glitch makes Chrome hang all the time, so that might have something to do with it.

  • I am also using Chrome and did not have any narrow timeslots in which to make my post-shrine-powder donations.

  • whenever i've used the powder, there's been no need to donate while the sparkles are still going.

tho i didn't use any powder in the last test.

it influenced my next donation even if that donation wasn't made during sparkletime.

  • Confirmed: you do not need to donate while the sparklies are going — *whenever* you make your next donation, it will be effected.

Eglantine is right: the favor is determined simply by the base cost of the items donated right now. Sometime "soon", that'll be different (different Giants will generally want different things and they will also have "cravings" from time to time, which they will tell you about).

  • stoot, maybe the shrine powder should have a status top right.

just status, not a countdown, to avoid some of this confusion.
Posted 23 months ago by striatic Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Hmm - strange: I thought it did. In any case, we can make it so.
Posted 23 months ago by stoot barfield Subscriber! | Permalink
  • No wait — hmm. See? You confused me! It does show up as a buff indicator (and the tooltip even says that your *next* donation with either have double effect or be "superduper powered").

But! The buff indicators are not really working that well in the current design (and are slated for a redesign).

  • I have totally avoided shrine powder because of the lag ---did not realize it had been re-worked. I will have to start using it again.
Posted 23 months ago by Nanookie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • it wasn't reworked, that's how it always has worked.
Posted 23 months ago by striatic Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Has it? Must admit, that I have not used it much. But I was _clearly_ given the impression from the shrine powder info, that I had to donate while it was still sparkly..
But I might have read that wrong.

    Yay! :)

  • When you've used the shrine powder, the next time you click on the shrine it does say "Triple rewards!" on the panel. Much better than rushing to get in while the sparklies are there.
