Eliminate money and let's have a barter system

I think currants are misplaced in the world of Ur. It is the only thing adopted from real life that does not fit very well in Glitch. It stiffens creativity and imagination (items become a number instead of endless possibilities and players are focused on a singular activity to increase this Metabolic).

The auction house can be transformed into a market, where people formulate their offer and demand.
New players receive tools and other items as reward for quests (or as utilities at the start of a quest).
Change to vendor mechanics (and possibly donation mechanics)
Would another item (beans or ingots) emerge as some form of currency?
And what are other effects on the game mechanics?

What do you think, Glitches/Glitchen(s)/Glitchians/Glitcheroonies?

  • I think the economy would grind to a halt.

Having a liquid form of money greases the wheels of commerce and makes it possible for items to be valued more fairly and accurately. The units of value are relatively small, and therefore it's easy to adjust prices on a smooth gradient.

It also allows for efficiencies: I don't have to carry around or hoard a little bit of everything so that I'll always have the thing that someone wants to barter for.

There are many very good reasons why large, complex economies use money.

  • well, currants wont be AS important come the new economic changes, if you've been reading the Q&A feat Stoot Answers... here's the compilation www.glitch.com/forum/genera...

And I dont think an actual barter system would work, or if it did, something like the bean/cherry/gas/spice or maybe wheat or eggs- a Basic Resource, would become the default currency

  • @Pascale: The economic system of Glitch is not complex. We don't have debt, banks, stock market or companies, or commerce. Money is certainly necessary in real life, but Glitch economy differs to some degree from RL.

@Slimenose: It is possible that one or several basic resources evolve as a form of currency, or it does not. At least there won't be a default currency, but it will be more fluid. That would be an interesting thing to see.

I think the centre issue revolves around easy vs. challenging gameplay.

  • I don't think having a currency or not changes how challenging the gameplay is... it changes how difficult it is to amass "wealth".

And with *something* being a default "currency" then bartering is no longer really bartering. It's shopping where you can haggle about the prices. Just like selling emblems in Global. you can offer to trade stuff, and haggle on the price, except to have that as the ONLY option in a game like this, isn't practical.
