Do butterfly milkers kill butterflies?

I try to keep three butterflies in my yard.  I have a milker, as I may go for more than 24 hours without logging on to the game.  Lately, I am loosing one or two butterflies each week.  Am I doing something wrong?  Are milkers bad for butterflies?  If so, why do we have them?

  • As I understand it, butterflies just age and die on their own. You can lengthen their lifespans by massaging them, but eventually, no matter what, they're going to die. But sometimes they leave eggs behind! :)

  • Yes, in my experience a milker shortens the life of a butterfly significantly.  I don't think massaging lengthens their life - it actually may shorten it.  All interactions do, except the dreaded "Sing to.." which lengthens it.  Of course, you could apply the youth potion to them periodically and start them again as babies

  • whats a youth potion and where do u get it?
and, i have a milker at home but i dont use it because i dont have remote herdkeeping. same goes with piggy feeders and meat collectors. so the butterfly milker and meat collector are full, cant collect anymore, will they affect lifespan?

  • I do massage my butterflies occasionally so now I'm not sure what is best for them.  I think you may be right, Dr. Hackenbush, about the milker shortening their lifespans, but they used to live longer with the milker in place.  Makes me think the devs just decided to make them die quicker.  Sounds like I need some youth potion.

  • Butterflies definitely used to live longer. At least mine did.

  • This post might help explain.

  • 6 days with regular milking.  That is what my logs show.

  • Another seeming change: previously, when my butterflies died, I would sometimes be left with a batch of 10 butterfly eggs,  Now I just get 1.

  • Animal youth potion is more expensive than a butterfly egg, by the way.

  • I have my three butterflies for a month and they did not die. I have no milkers and sometimes sing with them ))) and rarely massage them and sometimes milk them

  • Mine have a shorter lifespan since about two weeks too. But mine did never leave anything else than milk when they died. Is it possible that piggies eat the butterfly eggs?

  • @Ancale--Butterflies don't always leave eggs; I've only gotten them once ever despite several batches of butterflies ascending to a higher plane. Though that doesn't rule out the piggies eating them. Piggies will eat almost anything.

  • I had only ever gotten milk from my butterflies dying when a freind clued me in that if you have a larger number of butterflies you may get eggs when they die. I increased my numbers (sorry I'm not sure of an exact number, think 7 my be it though) and did find eggs when my butterflies died off. So, I've starting keeping a larger group of butterflies to increase my chances of getting eggs. I have a large multi-level house and was told not all feeders needed to be in the pen w/my animals. The ones on my upper floor do fill up after the ones in the pen fill.
