Book-binding

I've decided I'd really like to write books as a Glitchen. And I've read through the works of others in the forums and feel that I'm probably not the only one who will do this.

Currently, I've only figured out that a book can have up to 16 pages (using a bigger bag renamed with the title) of 1000 characters each page (so 16000 character books). While the character-limit per page isn't an issue, I'd be interested in a new skill and/or item to allow us to bind books that we write. Possibly something that can be learned with penpersonship as a pre-req. There could even be skill levels (paperback vs. hardcover, page limits per level, or even the ability to mass produce if you have enough supplies). A new item (book-binder or something more witty) could be used in conjunction with the skill.

Also, we'd need to find a way to share the books. Currently we could gift the book bag (ha!), or drop it on the ground, but could not sell it (which is really less of an issue) or make sure that more than one person has an opportunity to read it. So book-binding could lead to libraries (including memberships, check outs, a Glitchy decimal system [Tii would love it!], etc) of Glitchen works in world, a new publisher/vendor system to deal with original works and staff-generated works, houses with bookshelves,  book clubs, etc.

Just think about it. ;)

  • Also, we could have the Glitch date as the "This copy written" date! Wheeee!

  • I like the library renting idea. After a while (a few days), the book returns by itself to the library.

  • +1 I'd love to be able to make books and newspapers. The books would stick around forever, but newspapers would dissolve or disappear or whatever happens to notes. Just so the hoarder-type players don't end up with their 50k Alakol mansions filled with stacks of yellowing newspaper. :)

  • I find myself really looking forward to this, even though there is no guarantee it will ever happen. lol

  • Binding books seems like the next logical step in the penpersonship skill chain. I would be happy to be able to produce my own books; I think it would be great fun!

  • This is a really cool idea!  I never thought of it, but awesome.  Perhaps it would create a small economy of writers.  I wouldn't mind reading what kind of lore people come up with.

  • I've got 10 pages of a 16-pager written in my OpenOffice. It's taking so long because it rhymes and requires (sort of) accurate research. And the the test opened. It is very important advice for newbs that I'm planning on gifting to a specific glitch veteran. But I'm keeping a copy on my computer just in case we can bind them up some day. *hopeful*

  • I have few long term goals in Glitch but one is to build Library of Ur.

Quirk, your idea of bagbooks is great, but I would so so so love a way of making true books (perhaps using the under utilized machine... although, esthetically I'd prefer a binder that doesn't use fuel). If we get bookbinding and Group Halls, I would just make a group.

    (So so so want this.)
