Dusty Stick Faux Pas, Bad TS

Well a unique consolation, nice gesture but shouldn't everyone who was in the game at the time be similarly entitled? Whether or not affected by a bug, suddenly its become very good luck if TS makes a mistake (for some people).

People are now bidding millions to obtain this rare item.
And the fibres which are being dropped by the dust bunnies, imply by their description might be useful.
Certainly that item will be in very limited supply, and unobtainable unless purchased from the lucky stickholders.

I think its a terrible error. Akin to Jagex making the party hats and similar holdiay items tradeable. Such items became the most coveted and valuable items in the Runescape world, to the regret of Jagex.

  • WindBorn, having seen it happen in other games is what makes me think this is potentially a problem - and it is something that happens over time, as the owners of rares accidentally donate them, stop playing, and those items even scarcer. Your experience might be different.

As for your second comment - you quoted it, but I think you skipped the bit where I said "try" - and for the record, I am pretty sure TS are trying not to break the game without having to make any such promises :).

  • I also think it is great TS gave out the free stick, however, I also think everybody should have gotten one. Game organized experiences play a huge role in make up of this game so giving the experience of the stick to a select few and not all seems like a bad idea to me. Though not everybody temporarily lost some items a lot of us shared the item holders pain as they went through that rocky time. Many glitchy hugs were shared to raise hopes and keep smiles strong.
I didn't get a stick, and yes I am sad. I would love to see the little bunny and get the xp for getting a  new item, but I won't pay for one or whine to everybody to get one. Now it is true it's just a stick and a dust bunny, a small experience, but it's still something I can't experience without paying outrageous currants to a player who got it free. And even though it's a small experience..... I would still like me some bunny love! Share the love!

  • Think of it as a restaurant that comps dessert to the table who got the wrong appetizers and then had to wait 20 minutes for their entrees.  Just a little tangible apology to make up for the inconvenience.  The other tables did not suffer the inconvenience and are not offered the free dessert.

  • Great analogy Kookaburra. Now what about the table that got the wrong entrees and had to wait 10 minutes for their drinks? Or the poor couple in the corner who had their dinner spilled on them by the new waiter and they had theater tickets for after dinner? Or the old lady who ordered decaf and was inadvertently served regular and now can't sleep? I'm sure you can see what I mean. I don't wish they didn't get their "dessert" but I don't understand why their "suffering" is greater or somehow more important than mine.

  • You know. The one thought that comes to mind during this ..... stating of opionions is, if this item did not give out fibers, would you all be stating the SAME opinion? Probably not. I spent over a day at almost a stand still in my game play because of lost items in my storage. I had started regathering items to replace what was lost, but it was frustrating. And I am thankful I did not lose one of the special items others did. How sad for those who did.

As for the Dusty Stick. I have already shared fibers with a friend. The stick does not regen very fast and therefor can not be used all that often. Also, Token, Site your souce, that proves your statement is true, that the fibers will be in short supply and only available from lucky stick holders. I have looked in all the post regarding the stick, and I have yet to find anything to back up that statement.

Personally, the fibre is a bridge to cross once we know if it is going to be rare - so yes, my opinion is what it is regardless of what the dust bunny poops.

  • To people who are hurt and upset by not getting a stick: you may want to consider that if you complain enough, Tiny Speck may decide to give up on the idea of providing free special items at all. That way, no-one will ever get anything nice done for them.

Please, try to get over it and move on. Make it possible for people at least to get a unique item under other special circumstances in the future. One of those people might be you (or me, for that matter).

  • with regards to the actual topic - it's a pixelated piece of wood.  You'll all have it, hold it or own it at one time or another : ) Just like the GNG or the Yeti or the Rook and Rube or even the most boring of items..the pickle (that was a waste of 3 days for me!)

At the end of the day there is so much within this game to have fun with to let a 'pixelated stick' detract from your fun game time : )

  • Ok, let's forget long term economic problems that may or may not happen for a minute.

You guys see nothing wrong with the situation where people now hope to be around the next time the game bugs so they can get something unique and highly valued?

To continue with the above real world analogy - that's hoping your entree will be late so you can score a free dessert.

  • I am sorry if anyone is jealous or envious of the stick.  It is fun and everyone around gets some fiber so it is not just a selfish thing.

I lost many things, some irreplaceable, in the bug, as did many others.  Things which are gone forever and cannot be returned.

It also caused me to lose days of play, trying to sort stuff out and re-organise and re-make things.

I am still missing lots of odd things, and the stick is just a little compensation for the unpleasantness and unhappiness we suffered.  Those of us affected have been playing a long time and had accumulated some things of personal value, some of those have gone.  It is sad. Please don't begrudge us a little thing in return.

  • If the stick is really designed to encourage people to stick around during a beta test and view bugs as a positive event, then I'd say TS has made a brilliant move.

  • I don't think the problem here is TS compensating certain players for having to deal with their items going missing. I think it is that they overcompensated them, so much that players that weren't affected now want to be affected by bugs. I think TS should give everyone the stick, and give the affected players a free month membership, and/or some free credits.

  • I find this whole notion of "Rate Item, I have to spend loads of money on it!!!" completely ridiculous.

I don't own a yeti doll or a Nietzsche doll, and I would never pay 500.000 or a million or whatever currants to get one. Why should I?

Besides, if people want to do so... why shouldn't they? Money is basically worth nothing in this game. I am not sure if those other games that people refer to (where the economy headed into a Greece crisis because of lots and lots of money spent on rare items) have been really like Glitch in the sense that you can play them without having a goal. You can totally play Glitch without "getting better" or "getting more". Very soon, currants will be abolished completely anyway and be replaced by "experience", and I doubt that "experience" is something to trade.

Some people have items I don't? Fine for me. I am sure, sooner or later, I will meet one of them, get a peek at those items, and then shrug and play on. Or maybe some of them will get bored with their items, sell them, get lots of money and then... yeah, what will they do with that money? What can you really do with money? Oh, right, nothing. You can spend the money on more rare items. So what? If that's where people having fun, let them.

But if someone thinks, Glitch is about collecting rare items, and this makes the devs give some people an advantage if they freely hand out rare items, then maybe they should play another game. Just my opinion.

  • My hypothesis: we'll be able to make more dusty sticks by combining the fibre with wood using the tinkertool.

I'm probably completely off-base, of course. But it'd be cool to have things in game that can only be shared by using the original to create additional copies. (And eventually there would be enough that prices could be lowered significantly.)

  • PS: In fact, I find diversity quite refreshing in Glitch, and one of the problems at this moment is that there are a lot of Glitch characters, who are exactly the same. Everybody is level 40-60 and everybody has all the skills.

Before, there were delightful moments when you asked somebody to make a spice tree bean for you and handed them out a self crafted tool in return. Nowadays, everybody is a Do-It-Yourself-Juggernaught. If rare items can bring back a bit of that diversity from earlier days, I'd even say I want more rare items.

  • As someone who lost stuff in this bug, I will state that I have not received everything back that I lost.  Unless I could specifically name it, it was not returned to me. TS were incredible in trying to help me though. Much love & props to Kevin for that.

So where does that leave me when I realize after a day or two that I had things such as old tree poison that went missing. It's not anything major but it's worth a heap if I had chosen to sell it and it's considered a collectible now (I collect all the collectibles). I don't feel I can keep going back to TS with new things I remember, so I miss out on something that's uber rare and expensive, but as I didn't have a database listing every item from bags that went missing (bags remained but contents didn't), how am I suppose to be able to recover everything I had.

I love the stick and, for me, it did take away a lot of the stress I discovered when I realized my Beta Pickle, GNG, Dolls, a ton of cubimals, and so on, were missing.  Dustbunny is my favorite character in this game so it's a perfect way to end this issue on a high note for me.

  • Rare items won't bring back diversity.  And the completionists won't ever specialize enough for the game to again be filled with different types of characters.  What I would propose to encourage player/character diversity are mutually exclusive skills.  Skills that you can't learn if you have certain other skills.

Of course, the compulsive competionists are probably some of the highest-revenue subscribers, and 'milking' them is how a game company pays the bills, so that probably won't happen.

  • I do not care at all about having the stick or dolls or pickles, but I do agree with Audaria and Token's viewpoints. For those of us who have never received any special or rare items from TS, it can lead to "what about me?" feelings. If the reception of such items was random, I would be less inclined to feeling snubbed. But as most rares are acquired through bugs or beta testing or whatever, none of which I have experienced (save for the current beta period), I can see why people feel left out. It makes more sense to let the item be a gift to every current player, or available to all players for a certain period of time (random example: 24 hours) as a limited purchase item from a vendor. That way everyone technically has the opportunity to get the item but it can still be considered "rare".

Ultimately though, I think it all comes down to there not being enough interesting items in the game. There are loads of items that serve a purpose and are common, but not enough items that provide cute interactions or give interesting rewards. It's also the same thing with the SWF games and Random Kindness, but the reverse situation. They are fun items that serve almost no purpose, but they are so painfully common that I regularly see them dumped on streets (and sometimes I'm the one doing the dumping). I have a whole bag of SWF games. We need more fun, interactive items! People left out of special gifts might not feel as miffed if they had a good selection of items they could attain on their own.

  • I know this thread has derailed, and probably for the best, but if I may go back to Kookaburra's analogy for a moment...

In the restaurant scenario, other people at the restaurant can still get a dessert if they want it. What happened here is that all the dessert went to one table, and if anyone else wants it they have to find someone at the special table who is willing to part with it for a potentially exorbitant fee.

As has already been mentioned, this item is different from a chocolate bunny or a Glitchmas Yeti or the like-everyone had the OPPORTUNITY to get those. It's also not comparable to the special badges or an SB-1. The people who have those did something special to deserve them. The people here were randomly affected by a glitch.

I find it funny that the people saying "It's just pixels" are the same ones complaining that losing items from their bags was TRAUMATIC and affected their lives in a meaningful way. They're just pixels guys, come on! As far as sentimental irreplaceable notes go, well, that's more a value judgment, so I won't comment.

Re: the whole "communist/socialist/wharrrgarbl", isn't that the GLITCHEN SPIRIT? It's so great that everyone shares with each other here?

Re: there's no benefit - true, everyone will likely be able to comb fibers off a sloth... but everyone didn't get handed 2 million currants (or however much they're going for). Even in a game where you can harvest currants all you want, there's the opportunity cost. By the time I harvest 2 million currants there are going to be so many more currants in the world. Meanwhile, some of our currants are going to be converted to imagination when housing launches... so these stick holders could have awesome party pads because they lost a bean. Awesome. It's only going to get worse when the game opens back up and so many more people are creating indestructible currants - but that's a discussion for another time.

Finally, of course I didn't get a stick, but I wouldn't be happy with this decision even if I did. I don't think that creating an over class of elite stick holders is a positive thing in a social game. Especially when the stick holders are stick holders because of an unchangeable characteristic that they have no control over. Beautiful blue eyes, no?

  • TS should be handing out the stick to everyone. Granting an exclusive item to only a certain subset of players, many of whom are probably not even paying members, smacks of a particularly ugly type of favoritism.
