Best way to level up?

Ok, I've been playing since the beta in mid-summer, so I’m not new.  However apparently I haven't grasped the concept of leveling up.  I spend most of my day exploring and doing other non-XP-gaining fun things.

Because of this, people who started playing well after I have far surpassed me in levels.

So I ask:  What's the secret?  I mine when I find a rock in my travels, I constantly tend my garden for ingredients to cook, and I donate to shrines as much as I can afford.  And yet I'm still only 1/2 way through level 19.

  • Are you having fun? If you are then why worry about the levels? ^_^

  • Doing quests and new things in a good mood give you xp.

Though other than a larger energy pool at the beginning of the day leveling up brings no other advantages.

It's actually a disadvantage for teleporting and if you die as often as I do makes it onerous to get into a decent mood again.

Frankly, in the last week or so I've consciously died at the beginning of game day to try to stay in a bad (xp free) mood the rest of the day.

  • I've been playing since mid summer too and I'm also wondering.  I've seen some friends who are not online very much level up faster.

BTW, the issue of leveling up itself has been brought into question.  In another thread, someone was asking if xp wasn't really worth having given the extra costs of teleporting that go along with it.

  • Go for location completion badges. Each new location gives you XP; the better your mood, the higher the XP reward.

  • Donations to shrines, harvesting the materials for the donations to shrines,  using reflect from the icons you create from the emblems you receive from the donations to the shrines.

  • Take a glance at the achievement list. Do as many of them as possible. Since they cover just about all activities available in the game, this also turns out to be a good way to find out what you find to be fun! You don't even have to look at the list, really - I am decently high in the rankings just by running around and doing everything I can think of.

  • Get a house full of icons (that's a lot of XP just there) and walk backwards and forwards in front of them FOREVA

  • I'd agree with the "do what's fun" responses above. Other than the sense of achievement, there's really not all that much advantage to higher levels, and there are some downsides (higher teleport cost, higher tithes, harder to keep mood high if desired, etc).

If you really want to grind the xp, look into making things and donating the results. High-level foods, flavored beans, seasoned eggs, etc can really rack up the xp gains once you start making entire stacks at a time. You'll gain some xp while gathering the raw materials, more xp when making the item, and a nice bucket of xp when they're donated to a shrine.

  • Oh, I already do what I think is fun. That's what keeps me coming here for 4 hours a a night every night since 8/1. (or at least every night that was open during testing.)

I just look at people with higher levels and wonder what the trick is...
I plan to keep on keeping on, but if I could toss an extra level or two up there, cool. :)

Oh and may the Holy Buffs of Friendly be upon you!

  • let's see...

    Gather stuff,
    Make stuff
Donate stuff (using extremely hallowed shrine powder to triple everything up, as soon as you can make that)

Exactly what 'stuff' depends on what skills you've learned and what gives the best return of xp for the amount of time or energy you've got to play with.

Regularly milk any emblems or icons you've acrued

Keep your mood up to maximise any xp you do earn

errm..learn where a few of the big xp giving quoins appear, make a point of doing a run through the ancestral lands at least once a game day and if you can afford them (or be bothered) maybe a few purple snow cones for a couple of levels after 16 but they soon stop making much difference.

Don't think there's any trick to it other than grinding a bit to gather a lot of 'stuff' to eat/use/donate, If you are donating to speed up learning, I found it hard not to level.

Donating is the big one, for me anyway.

Having said all that, there' no real pressure to level, it's only one way to play so keep doing whatever gives you enjoyment ;)
