Test notes: 20 September!

This is it! You've been reset, and get to explore the world as new, one last time. If you can view with fresh eyes, we'd love to know what you think. We will be open for just a couple days, through about 3:30 on Thursday. (We'll post the closing time as we approach it- and we tell time by San Francisco and Vancouver clocks- check timeanddate.com for your part of the world.)

What's new in this test?

-New loading screen with helpful tips provided by many of you!

-Occasionally, when a Sparkly, Beryl or Dullite rock is depleted and respawns, it will have more rock to mine. Moar rock!

-Skill learning times have increased a bit, and some have extra pre-requisites.

-XP from donations now has a daily limit.

-We’ve added over 100 new achievements. The values of some existing achievements as well as how you earn them have been adjusted.

-The game is now capped at 60 levels, and there are extra XP and currant “bumps” when you reach levels 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60.

-We’ve implemented a new and more efficient way for the game client to render locations (streets, items on them, and the backgrounds you see) -- and you should see faster loading times.

And as always, many, many bug fixes!  Thanks again for all your awesome feedback throughout the testing.

Play on!

  • It isn't loading for me :(  Is there a loading bar because I'm not seeing one?

  • Whoo hoo! Thanks for working so hard to get it open!

ETA: Tip - don't play with your pickle while in the tutorial...you MAY get teleported before finishing...OOOPS...lol.  (And I swore I wouldn't do it until I got TP1 under my belt...oh well, guess that answers the question if the pickle can teleport you before you have TP skillz...the answer is yes!)

  • I'm stuck on the loading screen as well - any suggestions?
Posted 15 months ago by Dandilion Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Does the bug icon appear for you in the top left corner? If so, click on that so we can see what's going on when it happens.
Posted 15 months ago by Bees! Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Sadly no, the bug icon is not on the screen. All I see is the planet and the Tip screen.

I've tried it 4 times now, but I'll keep trying. Hope it works itself out :)

  • reloaded flash debug (lost it when I was forced to upgrade the player last time) and have now made it into the game but it came up with an error message which I sent.

  • I hear music, but my screen is completely white. The entire screen. The music sounds like Hell Music.

Oh, yes. I installed the Flash debugger again and nothing happened. Still just a white screen and music.

ETA: I got it going. All by myself! *pats back*

  • Thank you (: But why the cap at 60 levels?
Posted 15 months ago by Xacau Feera Blin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • i am experiencing a LOT of lag, and an issue in which the option boxes show up at random points in the screen..>?

  • I'm stuck outside the game, but according to my profile I'm stuck in the game, and seem to be losing mood and energy. >< Could a staffer summon me off the street I'm on or force disconnect me and see if that fixes it?
Posted 15 months ago by Sid Soloveitchik Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It's been working fine for me, although there was alot of lag in Ix.... why are levels capped at 60? I'm not sure I see the reasoning behind that, since game play needs to potentially last for several years for those that want to go for the long haul... I don't see myself ever stopping...
Posted 15 months ago by Shepherdmoon Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I was also wondering about the level cap...
Posted 15 months ago by Kira Bajira Subscriber! | Permalink
  • If someone gets to the cap, they'll probably raise it, but if there's a daily cap on XP from donations now, leveling up will be harder.
Posted 15 months ago by Sid Soloveitchik Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Having the same problem as Sid.
Posted 15 months ago by Reni's Mum Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Absolutely can't stand the daily limit for XP/shrines. This is the kind of stuff that makes me not want to play this game on a regular basis.
Posted 15 months ago by Mackenzie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I don't like the idea of a level cap because it makes it feel as if there is an end game; and this is one that's obtainable before a one-year subscription is up. It may make people not want to play the game past that point.
Posted 15 months ago by Shepherdmoon Subscriber! | Permalink
  • One thing ive noticed right away is that, although its a tad boring to be missing certain key skills, the significance of early level gains is so wonderful. Makes me think that energy and mood gains at higher levels are pretty out of wack.

  • The loading times are horrendous, never had this problem before, going from street to street takes forever, what's changed?
Posted 15 months ago by Phochai Subscriber! | Permalink
  • To the contrary, I found the loading times seemed much faster for most or all streets.  I noticed that for about the first 30 min. or so then I got used to it and cannot say if it still seems faster but I am very happy with it.

IX is still laggy.  It got slower and slower in there until I finally had to reload after leaving IX.  I went in at West Spice and exited up the Groddle Ladder.  I walked all the streets and made a purchase from each vendor.  I forgot to notice if the music had a problem.  I usually lose the music in IX and do not get it back until I reload.  My volume was down fairly low at the time.

I noticed some very minor "Bugs".  I began in the Heights Start.  There was no Music Block there but there was a note telling me about it.  The pan on the splash screen when entering the 2200 block of Marylpole Mount shows no houses.  I shook 3 bottles of milk, lost the milk and did not get any butter.  I went through my limited inventory 3 times (I had one small bag) and could not find the milk or butter.  I needed cheese to make a Cheese Board for one of the Quests and had no butter to squeeze until I milked more butterflies.  Joby is on the Leaderboards.  Joby is NOT a Bug.  At least I don't think she is but she probably should not be on the Leaderboards.

I walked all the streets and blocks in Alakol, Bartola, IX and the 3 Groddles and am now in Muufo where I have walked several streets.

I thoroughly enjoyed myself and played for several hours completely unaware of most people and things around me.  Well done Devs, Thank You!

  • And I'm back to having just the white screen. Installed the debugger 3 or 4 times so far, with a browser refresh, nothing. Emptied cache, nothing. I'm using Chrome on Win7. Is there something else I can do?

Note, that I do have music, but my screen is just white.

ETA: I just tried to go in-world using Firefox. No good. Using that one, my screen is black. With music.

  • There appears to be a lot of server lag now. When I gather those floating coins, the just disappear... I still get the effects, but no "popping" like they used to.

I hope the Tiny Speck servers can handle the increased traffic over the coming months!!

  • Hi kevbob

Appreciate most of the updates as ever and the artwork in the new loading screen is pretty...but I have been stuck out of the game for nearly an hour now on a dogdy cafe wireless connection and...if you are stuck out waiting for it to load for ages the trees and things that keep popping up and down kind of drive you mad (maybe the lack of sleep didn't help!!) and really you just long for a loading bar so you can see what is going on. I suppose when I say 'you' I actually mean 'me' :) Really enjoying starting afresh. Many thanks for all your hard work.

  • Love the new loading screen!

Experiencing a major um... glitch down the hole at Ix, crashed my browser (Chromium, WinXP) several times and now I can't get back into the game (crashes during loading of Ix, not loading the game itself) in order to get out (assuming from the above post by Brib Annie that it's an issue with the location). I'm going to keep trying to get out, but there's only so much my PC can take! Poor thing.

  • Played for about 4-5 hours on the 20th.  Exited the world and got back in a half dozen times. Never had a problem.  New streets load fast!

Sorry to those having problems.  Hopefully it's resolved by now.

    Great work!

  • It's nice to have fresh eyes on the game. The quests seem to be a good guide for new players and they progress nicely. It felt forced when I was level 30 and new menial task quests were popping up. I guess I am a bit pompous but I felt 'above' those kinds of quests at that point in the game.
I just can't wait to get enough currants to get my house again! Hopefully the level bumps will make a difference.

  • Thank you.  The game is just wonderful.. I no longer have any of the problems with playing, lag, loading, etc [knock on wood ]  I did have one flash crash but whatever :)  I was really nervous about start up because all my problems seem to be happening when I was on a crowded street.  BUT everything went fine.  Sorry to anyone having problems. I hope they are resolved soon.

    Glitch On!!!

  • I love the new updates and faster loading, happy to be playing again! I don't understand
why the level limit of 60. What happens then? Before the reset I made it to lvl 42 in about 7
weeks. I understand that things were done to make the leveling slower but........??

  • All I can say is that I'm jealous of you little Glitchens playing right now whilst I work.

    Come on, launch!
Posted 15 months ago by shipwreck Subscriber! | Permalink
  • This has definitely been an interesting and challenging update.  Glad to see it will launch soon!

The skills changes have definitely made it a bit more challenging to queue things up, but like the challenge.  Look forward to the game being down so I can noodle out all the changes that happened.  My friend and I were making changes on the fly to our strategies...it's worked out for us, but still wondering what has been left in the wake.

Housing price changes seem rather reasonable, and it seems the houses are more in line with what they offer, but there is a whole thread on that.

    Love the new achievements.

Still working around the changes to mood...definitely dropping faster and for no reason that previously. I came back from being away from keyboard...when I left my mood was pretty full, and now it's meh...and dropping with the less I do (and spend time in the forums). Must revisit drinks when I used to pretty much ignore them or hand them out as gifts...

I'm sure there are a ton of things to still discover, not the least of which is figuring out all the naughty things my pickle might do...

ETA - thanks for the mondo sparkly, beryl and dullite rocks.  I had a couple over the course of the day that gave me around 150 ores....sweet sweetness....almost died a few times because I wasn't paying attention as I was just mining...but I'll take on that challenge!

Thanks for all the hard work!

  • Wanted to say, I love the changes on the entry, the tips on the initial load screen.  Altho I'm a "seasoned player"...I do believe these changes are so much better for the game.  Well done!!  Love the badges for completing the areas (didn't get one for the Heights, went thru it twice just to make sure..hum) did get my other ones so far.  But, main point, love the changes for new players!  Well done, well thought out.  Thank you for that.

  • so, the caps on the shrine donations are not working so much for me.

I only started playing a little yesterday, and again today.  Mostly I've been doing 'new player' things like wandering about, completing quests, etc.
I'm not trying to level up particularly or mine like a nut to get a big house.  More general, exploratory activity, mostly.

So now I have a quest intended to teach new players about shrine donations ('Spreading the Love'- get 23 favour points from 5 different giants) and I kinneh do it as every shrine I've tried to donate to says I've already reached my daily limit.

Now, I ain't been donatin' nuthin'- pretty much all the favour points have come from quests and a few quoins, I guess.
And I know that I'll just have to wait for the new game day to re-set my donation limits, but if I was a new player I'd be thinking 'WTF?! How'm I supposed to donate stuff when it keeps saying I can't?!?'

    Anyway...
going back to chatting wif me chickens now...

  • Load screen doesn't seem to have indications of how far you're gotten like the old "thermometer" type. It's pretty but less informative... any way to add any kind of indicator?

Donation caps are a PITA, especially since I forgot I was a n00b and started using shrine points to shorted learning times. D'OH! I guess the goal is to slow people down and have them play less, walk away from the computer for a while instead of sitting at it for hours trying to blow through levels? It kind of feels like an unnecessary frustration to me.

    Love the completionist badges too!

I think you cut down on the pickle spam, for which I offer my most heartfelt gratitude. Now can we maybe cut the frequency of the Wilhelm Scream?

I'm also hearing snippets of new music here and there... had something folksy in a start street while greeting, and some other odd bits showing up in game, unattached to anything else I can figure (like Rube). Are you testing stuff or is it a puzzle or ???

Thanks so much for all your work! It's an amazing world and I'm having such a good time learning it again (even if I tend to start drumming fingers impatiently at the trees that take forEVER to harvest). Just gotta finish my BLs and then I can take care of that, too!
Posted 15 months ago by Lilith Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yes, I miss the loading indicator bar. I have intermittent internet probs at one of the places I regularly play, and the loading bar gave me quick indication when there was a net problem I needed to fix before playing.

The scream thing is freaky and unpleasant.

I really like the new bits of music I hear around! It's fun to go back to newbyville, I had forgotten how fun it was to get all those early achievements and skills so quickly.

  • Did I read right..do we stop levelling after level 60?
Posted 15 months ago by Cryztal Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I love the region completest badges (will help me remember which areas I've finished up while exploring). I find the new intro load screen very appealing, and didn't even notice that there was no load progress indicator because it always loads up very fast for me. The streets have been loading a bit quicker (they were always fast, but now they are indeed a little faster), and I haven't had a single flash crash throughout the whole test so far (which is highly unusual for me). I have experienced lag on occasion (especially when visiting Ix), but that usually goes away after switching streets. In the past it would persist and I would have to reload to fix it. The tutorial and earlier quests are much better than they used to be when I first joined. Things seem more organized and easier to follow. I also really appreciate the fact that the Rube is less of a stranger. I love that guy.
Posted 15 months ago by Shepherdmoon Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yeah... wondering about the level 60 cap as well. I've got a year sub; I'd love to be able to see how high a level I can reach, and capping the game seems... well, counter-intuitive given how many people are concerned about scalability. If it goes up once people manage to reach it, great. If it doesn't, then I guess I'm missing the purpose of it.
TBH, the best updates seem to be the "moar rock" update, rendering (super-quick load times on my end), and new achievements. But, like koolaroo said, a lot of them are nerfs, which is a bit less fun.
