There should be enemies, or some major goal.

As the title of this topic says, I think it would be nice to have a major goal in the game, kind of like a back bone. I sometimes get to the point where i run out of quests and i find i have nothing to do. I mean, leveling per se, with out a bigger goal isn't that fun. What is the point of studying skills if the only thing I can acheive through them is money. Also, maybe some enemies and fighting skills would be nice too.

  • You're right.  For now, I see this as a fun game to play for short periods like Farmville.  If there were some real goals, I'd be more inclined to play for longer periods.

  • totally !... a real nice meta plot would be awesome, yes. like the fate of the giants, or something threatening their equilibrium... but enemies ? this game is so awesome for its non violent take on MMOs, should we endanger this feature by fighting skills and mobs ? i wonder...

  • I think there will be larger plots that emerge as the game develops. It's still in the early stages right now, so things are moving on. There are enemies ("the Rook") but the developers have said there will be no fighting as such.

It's also a game that's really about what players do with or to each other. People have developed friendships and rivalries already, I think that's where the conflict you want is going to come from for the most part.

  • I've only played Glitch for a few days now; I definitely love the game but I can't play more than maybe 30-45 minutes of it.  Maybe it's better that way, a manageable "MMO."  With my PhD looming in the Fall, a game where I can be whisked away for 30 minutes at a time is great, plus it's kind of nice that you can do stuff in the game without being in the game (auctions, skills etc).

  • Yes, some sort of challenging goals where you can monitor your progress would be great.
It is a very absorbing game, but I think my first impression is that the game needs a series of short term game goals.  I am also unsure how I achieved to raise my level status - this just seems to happen without any aim from me.
So aims and goals of the game are defiantly needed to keep you interested.

  • no fighting, no violence, no enemies..i think that is part of what makes this game so different and i would be said if they changed it - but i don't think they will - it would go against everything they have been promoting so far.

that said more goals or quests would be cool.

  • I have to say I totally disagree with your viewpoint about enemies and fighting goals. I think there are plenty of other MMO's out there that have lots of fighting and would hate to see that be any part of this game. I agree w/you that when you run out of goals there is nothing "structured" for you to do in the game, but I think that's part of the attraction to some of us. You can explore to find those streets that are new to you, or enhance your skills in cooking for instance by using your tools more and getting access to more recipes, you can join in on either side of the tree killing debate and kill or save the trees, you can gather items that might be needed on projects or talk to your freinds in game.

  • There are lots of other games that have fighting skills and if that's what you want in a game, perhaps one of those would be a better fit for you.

In terms of goals & structure. Well, it would be nice to have a few more quests once you get to the higher skill levels, but this is also meant to be a sandbox game where players make their own fun. We just need more features to support that. The devs are already working on giving groups an in-game presence. It would also be nice to have a way for players to run their own shop or other business. I'd also like to see a mechanism for players to make their own quests without worrying about unsuspecting players taking their pink bags. :)

  • I think one of the great things about Glitch is that there is no violence, and there is no endgame.  Add fighting and war, and what distinguishes it from any other game out there?  It’s nice to have something different that’s all about what YOU want to do.  Like Farmville?  Learn all the gardening skills and make yourself money from that.  Like city-building games?  Learn mining/engineering and take part in projects.  Just want to be sociable?  Wander around and chat to people.  Whatever you want to do, you can.

As for an overall plot: it might be nice to see more quests, or more complex quests.  I learned Mining IV which took around 6 days (with spending favour and things), and the resulting quest was to mine ’til my Fancy Pick broke.  Which was over in less than an hour.  More involved quests that went on a little longer and maybe required having multiple skills might be nice, but I wouldn’t want to see an ‘endgame’ as such, because then it becomes less social and becomes about ‘completing it’ as quickly as you can.  Which people do get competitive about, and I just think that would move Glitch too far from what it’s meant to be.

  • If there could not be a kill-them-all goal, there should be a be-better-than-most goal. There should be more different types of leaderboards, for more people could be on the top in something.
And each leaderboard could have some week- and day- listings in addition to all-time one. This can add more dynamics to comparation.

  • I agree, we should keep fighting out of the game, but make some long-term goals so we have something productive to do when we are done all our quests!

  • There are two main ways to solve the endgame problem:

WoW: Grind until you have everything, then more gets added, so you grind some more.

Kingdom of Loathing: Some end goal, then you 'ascend' to the afterlife. Then, when you're done there, you are reborn at 1st level.

The way KOL does it is really fantastic. You replay the game, but choose challenges to make it more difficult to do. You get rewarded based on how challenging you make it. In Glitch, it could have the form of doing a 'lactose intolerant' run, where you couldn't eat any milk or cheese product.  A vegetarian or carnivore run. Perhaps 'wrath of the gods', where you can only donate to one shrine, or perhaps none.

The reward is keeping a skill when you start over at 1st level. Or starting with a house. A hat available only to those ascended, with a feather for each run. Something to keep you coming back, starting over, and doing it all again, but with a different twist.

'Perma-death'? You die, and start at 1st level. Reward is something amazing, like starting with 999 favor at every shrine.

This sort of 'rebirth' endgame means that nobody forgets how to play the game at low levels. Before you can cook, what foods do you eat? Where are things that the low-level quests ask for? This keeps everyone able to help out new players. This ability is largely lost in games without this sort of end-game.

I do agree that some even larger, over-arching goal would really make this game special. Some larger storyline. But I really appreciate KOL's method for the end-game. It means that while people playing the game longer have some advantages, (starting with Remote Herd Keeping at 1st level, for example) they aren't at a totally different place than newcomers. They can guide a new person through the game, since they're still playing that part of the game. This prevents the 'goddamned n00bs' mindset that you often see in games where people just level to infinity.

In a friendly, cooperative-ish game like Glich, I think this sort of end-game makes a lot of sense.

  • This old thread had some interesting discussion about how to make Glitch "epic": http://beta.glitch.com/forum/general/212/

There's also an entire thread devoted to Ascension, but in it I get mocked for wanting to evolve into a sentient pig in the game, so you'll have to hunt that one up yourself.

The Rook has been identified as the Big Bad for the game, but I am guessing the mechanics of how the Rook was supposed to operate just didn't pan out, and right now it's being re-worked.  At first there was an actual giant scary bird that players did battle with, and there have also been hints of the appearance of creeping malaise taking over different areas, but nothing concrete or finished out...yet?

I also am guessing that the ongoing battles stemming from trees/projects/resource balancing have also detracted from developing that aspect of the game.

  • Maybe that's what makes it different from other MMOs? I think Glitch is not supposed to be about killing some enemies or monsters, it's about making a world out of every player's creativity. Not that I'm saying your wrong or something, I totally respect your opinion, but I like the game the way it is :)

And, if you like killing something in the game, grab some Tree Poison and go find a tree!! :D
(You: Mwuahahaha!! I killed you, you dumb tree!! Mwuhahahahha!!!
    Glitches: Plant murderer!!!!
    You: -.-)

  • Regarding @Aenkeedoo's comment about leaderboards, I think it would be really great if we had a "friends" leaderboard view.  I know this isn't terribly original --- a lot of console and mobile games do it --- but I think they do it because it works.

Your world-rank is a curiosity when you can't imagine ever cracking the top 100, but rank among friends can be a much more active competition.

  • I am intense about a game for few days, but then turn into a casual gamer- where I play such that it does not over take my free time. Glitch held my attention and involvement more than others for the following reasons.

    - There is no end goal, or complicated story line. Everything else in life has- movies, other games be it single play or MMORPG. In Glitch you make your own small term end goals; with tons of badges.
    - The character graphic animations; very basic and uniform all over. No gazillion combinations to remember and is aesthetically calming. If one wants roars, jumps, wielding stuff  again there are way too many games of this sort out there.
    - No violence policy. This is the one of the very few games aimed at adults which is non violent and does not involve any killing etc; unless when you run out of energy, poison a tree or hog tie a pig. Tons and tons of adventure and war games out there if you like violence.
    - Universal communication. General forums, group chat channel and live help channel. And yet groups systems if you want a little more sense of grouping. All other games have complicated clan systems, which isolates players into a frog in the well mentality. Here you never know which players you will meet; what interesting thread you will come across (such as this) without clicking on sub topics.
    - No age restrictions. I can decide to play next to a kid without worrying whether it is appropriate for them to see me killed by gory others etc. Also since chat is not the main component; we can keep just running around picking spices, cooking etc.

I think if one needs more challenge in terms of very complicated stories, tightly knit clans, extra extra long quests there are better options. This is the only game where we don't have to fight or have long term goals and yet converse with other adults in a friendly environment.

Enhancing the game based on several ideas is nice, but if the underlying concept of the game is changed; it will be just like hundred of other mmorpgs.
