I tried, I failed, what now?

When keys rolled out I was super-duper excited, then I noticed how OP they were. So I made an example rule set like I mentioned here, not something I ever said was one... but they are pretty blunt and condescending (unintentionally).

So from there everything was chill, I didn't want to be mean and felt lonely in the bogs so I handed out a mere 60 keys.

I watched that thread, and after Vera Strange had  pointed out that someone should have common courtesy, I decided that people who I knew or were reputed would get the keys, which is awesome.

Then an incident came where my butterfly eggs were taken and meat collectors came empty, I didn't freak out, but just wanted an answer, and no one seemed to be a suspect... then it happened again, so I was like screw it, I'll just take out some people who were keyed during the last theft between person A & B.

As incidents occurred, I put notes in their place that were of the same concept of the rules...(and noted that).

I moved the eggs somewhere safe and moved on.

Now the herb hype. I have people who plant for achievements by using my herb house which is OK. But recently people have been taking plots that aren't theirs and that's pretty screwed up of course.

The obvious answer is to revoke keys, and being specific would be hard to do... and mass mailing is impossible.

Should I take the time to do mail/IM each person? My stuff is not in harms way anymore. Where can I plant my herbs now (I do have some options like a friends house and garden, is anyone's low traffic)?

The people who have my keys are at least 30+ in level I have no Idea who would do those kinds of things...at that point.

Thank you for reading,
Rook

  • I feel bad for you Rook - despite the rules you have been very generous with your house. I did accept your key as I thought I might use your garden for herbs, but once the herb rush came on I thought it might get a bit competitive there so I never did. And even though you did give your key to a lot of people (60! I am not so special after all) it was not as if you passed them out randomly on the street.

The fact is that if someone goes to your house and steals your stuff, they are not very likely to admit it when asked. You could make a status request asking for the keys back and return them only to a very select group of your closest associates. I do not even know how you get a key back - does it have to be a mutual transaction or can you revoke them? Change the locks?

  • Right. I was actually going to post something in response to the OP and got sidetracked. Drat.

If you think you need to go and revoke all the keys, then it would be polite to let people know why you're doing it. Since they're your "friends" (in game terminology, anyway ;-) ) then you could do it via status update, but if you want to be sure that they're getting the message, then you have to do it by IM or by mail. I'd do a mailing -- compose the mail in a different program, and then copy-and-paste into your browser, to avoid extra work. You can then personalize as you want.

Yes. you would need to revoke ALL the keys, and then give them back out slowly, even if you trust certain people. It's better, safer, and more polite that way.

If you don't care about being polite, then just yank 'em all, and reply to the people who ask you why.

ETA: @Kookaburra: there's a "revoke" option on keys you've given out.

  • People are seriously lame. "Derp, this isn't my stuff, but I have such a huge sense of entitlement that I'm just going to take it!"

For the record, I think the only house I've ever been to is the one belonging to The Boyfriend, despite the fact that quite a few people have sent me keys. I just don't have the time to visit everyone for no reason. The Boyfriend has a bog house and doesn't play every single day anymore since he's all kinds of obsessed with Minecraft. So, hooray! Herb garden!

  • @EnnuiStreet thank you. I don't think I have to revoke ALL keys, but I will do most of them.

  • Hi, Rook. I've never visited you because I'm just not comfortable doing that unless it's someone I know quite well. But I thought your key offer was a nice gesture in the spirit of community and I'm sorry to hear that your generosity has been abused.
Posted 12 months ago by ElleD Subscriber! | Permalink
  • 60 keys, that is way too many people to trust to! I understand that you have had only best intentions and that's very nice of you but also naive.
If i were you I would send keys to only few people that i could really rely on.

  • If it helps you, I won't be offended if you revoke my key. I am flattered you thought of me, but I have never used it and I probably never will. While I appreciate the gesture, of course, it's clear your generosity is causing more problems than you could have foreseen.

It makes sense to start fresh and give out keys based on merit. I can't imagine anyone would be offended knowing why you've made that decision.
Posted 12 months ago by Xev Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yes.

This is the VERY reason I ask people to take back keys unless I know them very well. My definition of very well? I know them in the real world or I've known  them in game for more than 3 months and know how they play.

    I agree with Xev.

  • I have never been to your house, honestly, but I say, revoke all the keys and start over with those you hold closest to you and be done with it.  (What Xev said)

  • I don't think  you need to worry about revoking the keys... it's your privilege and right to.

You shouldn't feel obliged to keep letting people into your house. It's your house.

Just do it and if people ask why,  then tell them. If they get pissy, then, well, they're pissy and you probably didn't want someone like that in your house anyway.

    :)

  • Rook, you can slowly add people back and watch to see not only if they are trustworthy, but if their playing style is comfortable for you.

I have two keys out.  Both people leave my garden planted up with the same kind of crops they found when they got here.  Both people leave stuff in bags for me next to the garden.  Both people are not only 'not thieves', they are people who make my game play more fun.

I wouldn't want someone to have a key if they harvested all the crops, but left my garden empty when they were finished.  If they just drop stuff around and clutter up the place.  If they add more animals than I want to have there.

It's all about how comfortable you are.  Just because they are nice does not mean they have a playing style that makes your home a nicer place to be, for YOU.

  • How awful that someone betrayed your trust! Sorry it didn't work and I certainly understand you revoking the keys you shared. I never visited your house since I thought it would be rather busy with all the herb craze, but even if I had I would never take anything that belongs to someone else... It was a very nice gesture from you though, and I'm sure your trusting and good faith will be rewarded at some point!

  • I've been nothing but respectful to the friends who have entrusted me with their keys, even going as far as to leave them things in their houses while they're gone. However, it's hard to know whether you can trust someone, especially if you don't know them personally. I really wish there was a way to "lock down" the stuff in one's cabinet because I would think that'd be where you'd want to store your precious things. I went so far as to help a friend I know pretty well get a house in the bogs because I've honestly been afraid to ask people in my friendslist if they want to share their boghouse with me. It's unfortunate that some people have done this to you, and I hope you find some worthwhile people who will share their gardens with you and not take your things.

  • Rook, I'm so sorry to hear that one bad Glitch has ruined your party house. :-(  This whole herb garden thing has been a bit of a nightmare since the potion skills came out.  People are afraid of getting suspended for alts, community gardens are turning in to a free-for-all, crazy auction gouging, and now this.  *sigh*

  • Ah, that is too bad that it didin't work out but don't worry about revoking the keys, I doubt that anyone will be offended if you do.

And you've given me a great idea! I just have to work out the details..

I'm not sure what that says about me, but maybe you should be a bit more cautious?

  • Rook, I too am sorry to hear what happened.  You gave me a key but I too felt uncomfortable to ever use it, because we know each other, but not all THAT well, and I was afraid something like this might happen.  I actually am more comfortable having you revoke the key you sent, as I don't want to be under a cloud of  suspicion due to another player's dishonesty.  I hope you are more careful now, and please, actually, DON'T re-send me a key...we can be friends without that.
Posted 12 months ago by marycontrary Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I am so sorry to hear that happened Rook. Considering the levels and resources of the people involved, me included, I am surprised that anyone would steal anything. It boggles the mind actually.

I can give you a key to my alt's bog house if you need a place to plant herbs.

  • I know this might defeat the purpose of what glitch is meant to be, but what do you think of this idea that just popped into my head.

They implement a feature that gives you logs of activities that happen in the house that you personally own. So say something went missing, you check the logs of when it was missing and the person that took it.

Anyways, just an idea because it really sucks that you even have to resort to revoke keys and other things.
Posted 12 months ago by Vinchon Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I completely understand you wanting to revoke the keys.  I'm so sorry this happened to you.  I never did use the key you gave me because I don't feel comfortable visiting someone's home when they aren't there.  After the new skills I figured it would just be much to busy, so i didn't bother.  Hope your faith gets restored my friend.

Edit: I mean if I was robbed in my house, I'd definitely think of at least installing a security camera lol

I'm really sorry to know about that. :/
It should be a bad feeling...
As you know among the total 100% there is at least 1% that doesn't care about the rest.
These (the 1%), 99% of the times, they are idiots or morons!
But sometimes they can be/are just stupid inconsequent kids playing Glitch (as I heard some stories about kids...). Maybe it would be already time to put here, in this game, some real age control.
Anyway, all the best from now, and we''ll talk more soon.

  • There are quite a few people who mentioned now that they did not use the keys anyways.

I feel the same. I did not get any key from you, but I exchanged keys among a small group of a handful of friends. I normally only go to their houses, if they are online anyway, I am asking via chat if somebody has a certain item, and they tell me "just go, get it!". Apart from that, I feel weird to go into other houses. What for, anyway? There's nothing I really need. There's nothing in Glitch that cannot be acquired on the street or on the auction market. There's rarely something that you need sooooo urgently that it cannot wait a few hours, until your friends are back online.

I know that one friend, who lives in a different time zone, often comes to my house at night, harvests my herbs and plants new ones. That's about it.

In fact, I do think that a lot of us could probably be much less "generous" in giving out keys, because most people won't use the key anyway, or they could just knock on our door when we are online.

So I would say, yes, 60 people is too big a crowd to hand out keys. It would be much more fun to invite those 60 to a private house party anyway.
