Optional filter in global?

Not philosophical discussion needed about what you view filtering as, ITS OPTIONAL!

Please could we get this implemented for those of us who find certain words offensive?

Also maybe make it customisable so that we can add whatever pops up that's not covered. I.E Manually changeable by each user.

Just to clarify, this is a thread about R.E.S.P.E.C.T above anything else, not just saying "Oh well I think its fine to swear so I will..." considering others regardless of how 'idiotic' their views may be...

  • Whoa, why the caps lock in the subject?

  • No. How about just block people who offend you or better yet, make your own group chat, and dont talk in global.

  • I vote for a personal filter.

Not a forced one, but a self imposed one.

  • Sorry I had the caps button down, fixed.

  • If there is a personal filter, I vote that it's one where users have to manually enter a list of words they'd like asterisked out. No auto population. Even if it is not that fun for the people who want to use the filter.

Otherwise we are putting TS in the position of deciding which words are offensive to a nebulous group of people... can you imagine the threads on threads on herb-gardening threads because "gay," which can be used derogatorily, is nothing to be ashamed of when used self-descriptively? We would tear ourselves to shreds.

  • Kahmiel in response... why should I have to create a group chat for my morals and you not?

Its Global chat for everyone not just the ones who believe in free speech without respect.

That argument doesn't stand. I do currently block people but I don't want to lost out of the mature interesting bits of the conversation.

I was talking about thinking before you speak really.

  • @Volkov Those are wise words... wish I'd read them correctly.
Posted 12 months ago by Pomegrandy Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Volkov, if only that would actually happen, unfortunately It wont as people are much to stubborn to consider others unless its forced upon them.
Posted 12 months ago by Nytician Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Pretty much my thing is;
Just because you're an "adult", and can curse, doesn't mean you should.
Age and maturity are two separate things.
Not saying you're immature if you curse or say suggestive things, but it's not always needed I guess?
Dunno'. Personal filters are still needed.
Posted 12 months ago by Volkov Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Well, in terms of suggestive things... the game itself is pretty brow-wagglingly suggestive (butterfly milking, for example.)

I also suspect that a lot of people who like casual, whimsical MMOs have had to work within the confine of ones that were at least designed for children on paper, so they couldn't make innuendos or use salty language. This one isn't. So if a Juju just stole their grand ol' grinder, and they're in global, and they're frustrated--I don't think it's inconsiderate of them to express that frustration, briefly, using an arsenal of words.
Posted 12 months ago by Pomegrandy Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I agree Pomegrandy.

Lets have an optional filter for those who don't want to see that outburst though.
Posted 12 months ago by Nytician Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Kahmiel: That right there is the problem.  You aren't thinking that global is for everyone, so it shouldn't be the people who don't wanna hear that kind of language should leave global or make their own group to chat in.  The same could be same about you and a few others.  Like i said before there are times and places for certain subjects, but most of them aren't needed in a game.
Posted 12 months ago by BloodravenD Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Filters are for specific words, not for whole subjects. I worry that people could use the theoretical words in a theoretical filter to shut down other people's conversations. "X is blocked on the filter, why are you inconsiderate people discussing X?"
Posted 12 months ago by Pomegrandy Subscriber! | Permalink
  • That's a whole other subject, the fact that people should be respectful, but having a filter would certainly help those who want to partake in Global but don't want to listen to a select few who are ignorant to views other than their own.

Posted 12 months ago by Ed Anger Subscriber! | Permalink
  • even better, as far as I know, global chat is still scheduled to be removed at some point. so when that happens, the whole thing will be filtered! problem solved. :)
Posted 12 months ago by katlazam Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think the idea is good. Its all about the implementation.
I can swear as good as the next glitch/woman/man/troll but it does not mean that some days I dont want to hear someone F'ing this and F'ing that. Especially if I kinda like that person but they're in one hell of a mood which would be easier to filter than block.
Now I find it easier to avoid global chat but sometimes its also nice to join in, even when someone else is not conforming to my personal desires for conversation at that time.
Its ALL about the personal and how you feel at that time, this sorta addresses that quite nicely.

  • Are there games which offer a user-customizable filter (where you have to put in each word)? I thought it was just, at the most, a strong filter / mild filter / no filter type of thing.
Posted 12 months ago by diaveborn ♥ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I don't know diaveborn, Wurm Online (a MMO I moderate for) has a file which you can modify.

Besides it doesn't matter if another game has it, I think it would work well with Glitch, maybe have a few built in words of course. ;)

  • Why not filter at the browser level?  I have not tried them myself, but I know there are profanity filters for Firefox.  You might check out http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/4175.

DISCLAIMER:  I know nothing about the above script beyond what is on the webpage.  I am thus in no position to recommend or to insure that it will work properly, be free of security flaws, etc.  I am simply pointing out that there are things like that that one could look into.

  • I enjoy my chats in Global a great deal and it would make me terribly sad if it was ever removed.  *Devs I am talking to you! and you! and YOU!*

Now back on topic.... I don't like the idea of filtering.. if someone's words offend you, just block them.  Or if you find value in what they're saying despite their use of some poor verbiage  are they really worth censoring~?  =/

  • I am very much in favor of a personal, fully customizable filter. There are a few words that many use colloquially and would not consider offensive, yet they trigger me heavily, and it is obviously difficult to ask people not to use them because:

    a) some people have a very "get over it" attitude towards these things
    b) I can't possibly get my request out to everyone who will ever enter chat
    c) some people actively use triggers against people when they find them out
    d) people forget all the time if it's part of their regular vocabulary
    e) it's just not fair -- I mean, if the word "toaster" always sent me into a nervous breakdown, it wouldn't matter to most people that I was once anally probed by a hostile alien species with toaster-shaped heads; as long as I'm in such a small minority, I can't impose my issues like that, no matter how severe they might be for me.

A simple personalized filter, which would only affect my own view, would carry none of these problems. It would be neither unrealistic nor solipsistic.

Disclaimer: All otherworldly species appearing in this post are fictitious. Any resemblance to real extraterrestrial beings with toaster-shaped heads, living or dead, is purely coincidental.

  • Philosophical discussions on whether filters are needed aside (seriously though?  do you filter the Real World by never leaving the house?  yeah, sorry, moving on), putting any work into such a filter would take work away from more interesting content.  Even if it would only take a week to implement that's one more week we have to wait for The Big Update.

And yes, it would necessarily  take staff from working on other content -- see the forum post I made about Tiny Speck in the Wall Street Journal.

  • Well I don't think a filter is the answer. It isn't so much the "word or words" that are being used. Some days the global chat has gotten extremely offensive when they get into sexual acts and so on. It is like they are seeing who can get one up on the other. I find it extremely immature to be honest.

My motto is, if you have to think to type it, maybe you should not type it at all.
Posted 12 months ago by Casombra Amberrose Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Should always think before you type.

Posted 12 months ago by Casombra Amberrose Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think it's a bit over-the-top to decide that just because sexual innuendo or humor or stories offend you that those who enjoy them are immature.  It's not your taste---it's generally not mine either (though I must admit the words "butt plug" are hilarious when paired together in almost any context)---but what one person finds distasteful, another might find funny or clever or exciting.  Using "immature" in this context seems to me another way of saying "I grew out of a phase where I found this entertaining, so if you did not, you're not as good a person as me."

For what it's worth, I find Global Chat kind of irritating.  But this is the first time I've complained about it publicly, and I only do so in order to make a point: because I find Global annoying more often than not, I no longer log into it and instead use a private group where people whose company I know I enjoy are guaranteed to be at some point.  It would be a bit ridiculous for me to take my complaints, that are likely only shared by a few, and ask for development time so I can have a personally tailored stupidity filter.

  • I would prefer to be treated like an adult and left to decide what i find offensive and not, and to be free to block anyone I find annoying. I do not want a filter or censor.

  • As I love to play with these kinds of conversations, I will say this:  I feel utter pity for people who find WORDS, especially curse words, offensive.  It is sad and just a touch ignorant that someone can find a word has any meaningful impact on their life.
Posted 12 months ago by Kirnan Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Kirnan, I would not say that anyone is ignorant to feel offended by offensive words. I am far from ignorant, however I do believe there is a time and place for everything and a game is not the place to be offensive in my opinion. To call someone ignorant without knowing the person is being ignorant in themselves. Not all dirty words are offensive to me but there are a couple words that deeply offends me and ones that I cannot ignore, that does not make me ignorant.
Posted 12 months ago by Casombra Amberrose Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Kirnan, try getting raped violently by someone you trusted over and over for half your life. Then tell me that certain words or phrases don't offend you. You're the ignorant one IMO. I feel pity for you, who can't seem to understand that the entire world is filled with people who have different viewpoints and life experiences than you do.

Edit: Obviously I think this filter is a great idea. And for the users who are upset by the idea of someone telling them what is and what isn't offensive....set the filter settings to off by default.
Posted 12 months ago by a gosh darned bear Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It's not words that offend, it's intent.  There's no filter I know of that can block that out.  If you don't like the conversation in global, ask folks to talk about something else, distract them with a pie or close the global chat window.  You are your own filter.

Posted 12 months ago by OL. Der Dan Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Ketchup: Exactly! I want TS to make a filter for me that I can use. I want to be my own filter. I don't want to filter out ALL of global, which is what you suggest. If you don't want to use it, you don't have to! Not sure how this a problem..
Posted 12 months ago by a gosh darned bear Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @ a gosh darned bear: I understand what you're saying, I think, but I don't think that anything someone said would be less hurtful is a word or two was censored.  If you block someone, you won't see anything they post.  If global is talking about a topic you find offensive but they are within the boundaries of the community guidelines, you don't have to read or participate.  If they are not within those boundaries, report the users who are breaking a rule.

How is it less offensive to read someone's full sentence and SEE that the word is obscured, knowing they've used the word you find offensive and making it invisible to you.  Is it not still visible in that sense?  Are you not still thinking about the word, the topic and all of the pain it causes you?

What a chat filter amounts to is a pair of blinders in a crowded room.  If you think people are speaking thoughtlessly, call them on it kindly.  If they don't respond in a way you like, block 'em.

I will urge in every topic like this (in which people encounter uncomfortable situations in-game) for us to create our OWN solutions rather than pleading with the devs to fix it.

I think you'll find that MOST players will respond positively when things are communicated respectfully and calmly, even in global.

  • Let's just all relax and agree the perfect way to deal with this is CENSOR THE INTERNET.

There, I solved all your problems.
Posted 12 months ago by Papa Legba Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I keep seeing the repeated line (paraphrasing): "It would be optional so you wouldn't have to use it!"

Let's just review a few facts.  According to an article published this week, Tiny Speck has exactly 41 employees.  According to that same article about half those employees are engineers, meaning they take care of hardware, server set-ups, bandwidth, and all those other wonderful techy things that enable Glitch to be one world we all log in to.  When you factor in employees whose roles are primarily community related, live help and Community Management and the like, that leaves only a fraction of those employees who are actually codemonkeys, and despite the long hours they put in, there's only so much time between them all in a week.

Now setting all that aside for just a moment, keep in mind that the forum population is not the entirety of the game population but merely a fraction of the active, passionate-about-the-game players.  Additionally, within this fraction here in the forums, only a smaller fraction actually finds this feature necessary.

So what you're asking is for Tiny Speck to pull a coder off of the project that will lead to the relaunching and the future financial viability of this game in order to please a fraction of a fraction of the players, despite that there are more effective tools available, despite that seeing **** really doesn't hide meaning or intent and only conceals the naughty from your eyes, not your mind.

Forgive me for emphatically insisting such is a waste of time.  But it is a waste of time.   Yes, your option would affect me, and affect every player for that matter, by delaying content and mechanics that would build and add to the game in favor of censorship tools that most will never use.

In addition, I just moments ago started up a movie rated PG-13 (parental guidance recommended for children under, not over, 13) that apparently received the rating for strong language and sexual content.  If any 13 year old can walk into a theater and buy a ticket for a movie with similar content, I don't think a game that requires its players to be 14+ should overly concern itself with player language or sexual innuendo.

And while I sympathize with a gosh darned bear, I assume this is a situation you sometimes find yourself in outside of the internet, where no filters are available.  I assume you politely ask people to change topics or remove yourself from the conversation.  Those two options are just as viable in Glitch, and should someone decide to take rudeness to another level and hound you with the words and topics that upset you, you have a virtual restraining order at your fingertips: the option to block.

tl;dr: I believe I'm quoting someone from this forum when I say: "I took the time to write it, so you can take the time to read it"   -- I wish I could remember who wrote it, as whomever it was deserves 300 internets, minimum.  See, even my tl;dr is wordy.  I suck at brevity.

  • I agree with Splendora and Saucelah......dont ask Glitch to provide a filter for you.  There is so much more they are doing with their time!  This is an adult game, if you dont like it that someone cusses once in a while, then go get a filter. There are lots of addons for all browsers these days.

If people are doing things you'd likely put in your filter, theory contributions probably won't be missed by you.

The. A full on argument blowed out it pointless argument. Then we set up a party pack invited everyone to It and everyone was friends again, gave ronin elf the burrito he wanted then global died for a full day so distraction works well there.
