I'm not sure I see what's so feminine about the typeface. I can't even remember what the old ones looked like now, anyway. Why are people complaining about cuteness, anyway? Have you seen your avatars? We're ALL CUTE! ;P
Hand-lettered by Keita Takahashi himself. Plus, the same size or smaller (in general) than the old green-bar-in-grey-box style (see) AND a bit transparent so you can see under them anyway AND distinguish one action from another at a glance, since the progress bar is now a word.
I appreciate the effort........I still dont like them. I think they are too big, too bubbly, and not needed.
Why do I need an item to tell me MINE MINE MINE when I am already aware I'm mining? I clicked on Harvest, why does it have to tell me that's what Im doing? I guess I just dont get it.
With the exception of the "doing stuff" progress bar, which I don't like due to its extreme length, and the "pet" progress bar, which I love because it's cute, I don't find the new progress bars all that bad. They won't make my list of favorite Glitchy things, but I don't dislike them either.
Agree with Innie. The words are especially gratuitous for actions that already have an associated animation. Why do I need the word "water" when there's a watering can pouring water on the tree?
Now that I've seen them, they're really nice. They're not even that girly - I don't expect a transformer progress bar in Glitch. Don't really see what the fuss is all about.
I'd just like the ability to hit ESC to stop an action, same as I do when getting out of a menu or anything else. Do that and the little bubble-bars will go from "okay, different thing" to "YAY, BEST EVER!"
still actively do not like them . If this was a childs game and I was 10 years old then it would be great.
Would still prefer to see it in the glitch TM logo font that can be seen in the upper left corner of this page.
Am I the only one bothered by the inconsistant use of verb form? (ie, progress bars for trees use the infinitives "water" and "pet" but shift to the present progressive tense of "repairing" and other -ings for other items). And when "crystlmlzng" came up, I was truly startled. Glitch has an unusually high level of literacy throughout the game, and to see a deliberately sloppy misspelling like that was jarring.
If you absolutely MUST keep this bubbly style of progress meter in the game, could you please at least go with universal verb form agreement and proper spelling? If you use the infinitive of the verb, the bars would be shorter, which would prevent oddball abbreviations.
ok I HATE the new word meter progress bars. add in the fact that crystalmalizing isn't spelled correctly and I want to just smack someone. I want the classic progress bar, sans swollen puffy cartoonish word that is sometimes misspelled.
The progress bars should use the same verb tense. It's "mine" when I'm mining, but "crushing" when I'm crushing. I can't remember if the other actions are in the present or present progressive, but using the -ing form makes more sense.
the words without -ing on the end (generally) seem to be ones that you can only do one of at a time.
Crushing, smelting etc, can go on for a long time, so that might explain why they need longer words... the progress is very slow on those ones if you're smelting 450 rocks
Everyone's not going to like everything the devs do.... BUT it's their game. They made it. This is just like facebook when they change something everyone freaks out and goes nuts and then in a month it all goes back to normal. I don't particularly love them but it's better than the old boring bars.
My main issue with new features like this, is they are forced onto everyone whether we like it or not and then have to get used to it.
I personally would prefer new interface features like that to be "optional" or at least give us an option to revert to the old style. I don't just mean progress bar icons [I haven't really seen them yet] but all interface features.
one of the main features that I believe needs its own options is the Glitch Action order.
i.e you regularly pet and nibble pigs but aren't usually interested in capturing or renaming them, an option that allows you to put pet in 1st slot, nibble in 2nd, capture in 3rd and rename in 4th.
you would be able to also edit the options for butterflies, rocks, trees and so on.
how annoying is it to have to escape out of the rename pig option because you pressed enter too quickly, or spamming everyone with the "you need an egg to incubate" message, or singing to yet another butterfly and then dying because you couldn't eat some food fast enough? very very annoying in my book.
yeah I know, off topic, but it tied in with my original comment :P
I have given it a few hours of molesting various things in the game and I really still dont like them. They seem really childish and just way way way to cutsey. (was going to say even for me but although I am a girl I like cars (if they are good ones like the new Hennessy Venom GT) and xbox and pink, so who knows maybe I just have a broken cute meter).
Normally I would be just meh about something I didnt like, but this affects EVERYTHING I do in glitch.
Just wish something that affects so much had been opened up to the vote option....
Brie said "Everyone's not going to like everything the devs do.... BUT it's their game. They made it. "
That is correct, we arent all going to like what they do, and yes it is the game they built. However, some of us actually pay to use this, and this is in Beta. As a beta tester, and a paying customer, if something new comes in game that in my opinion is not the right direction and is "childish", then I will say so. That is part of Beta........
I like the new progress bars just fine (and kinda miss "doing stuff"), but I've still don't understand why the system has to grab control of your Glitch and move you when you do certain interactions.
You line up specifically to interact with a particular item, click, and then you're shoved off to one side or the other, for no reason whatsover, and often either on to another item (which makes the next action unnecessarily more complicated) or sometimes even off a cliff, forcing you to climb back up, just so you can be shoved off again.
It's as if the game enjoys griefing you. There are plenty of actions which don't result in shoving you around, but sometimes the game decides you just shouldn't be able to interact with the world in a reasonable manner.
I know I bitch about this one all the time, but it's so inexplicable and so different from the rest of the style and intent of the interface, it sets me off every time it happens.
@ Biff Beefbat Though I cannot speak about shoving you off cliffs, I presume the reason you are moved to the side of an item (usually sharable resources, no?) is to more easily allow other Glitchen to also click the same item at the same time. For instance, have you ever tried to click (specifically with the mouse, not talking about hitting 'enter' to circumvent the issue) a peat bog when there's half a dozen other Glitches standing in front of it? It's far easier when everyone stands to one side or the other.
On topic: knowing KT made them makes me *want* to like them... but I still don't. :X I think we were all quite capable of distinguishing, at a glance, one action from another because of the animation of the action (watering can watering, for example) that plays; currently, having both the animation and the word makes the word redundant.
Other than the peat quest, how frequently do half a dozen Glitches actually try to click the same thing, though? As for trees, you can still click the top of them with a million Glitches standing in front of them, the same way you can click the tool vendor's mask.
There's nothing to prevent Glitches from just standing in front of resources in any case, and people manage to get by.
My beef with the shoving is that it imposes an inconvenience on every single qualifying action to solve a problem which (I am pretty sure) rarely actually occurs in the game and can be circumvented using a method less annoying than being shoved away from the thing you're trying to focus your attention on.
Additionally, it's inconsistent, in that you can interact with animals (in some cases) without being shoved and those are smaller than trees or bogs.
As for the progress bars, the old ones were corporate and evocative of installing Microsoft products, highlighting the wasting-your-life-away aspects of waiting for a machine which is allegedly there to increase your efficiency. New ones remind you you're supposed to be having fun.
If there is some secret reason for the shoving and I just can't see it, at the very least, can the distance you're shoved away from machines be decreased?
It pushes you completely out of range of the machine (which can't be used by multiple people at the same time anyway, can it?).
Additionally, could we eliminate shoving within our homes? If the reason for the shoving is indeed to give others access to resources, we should at least be safe from the pushy hand at home, right?
I come offering an olive branch. Let the compromise begin!
The new style of puffy lettered progress bars should stay.
All the progress bars should just say "progress bar."
I like them, I too was very excited the first time I came across it. And I think the heart at the end of "pet" ties in with the broken heart that shows up when something could use a pet. Too cute? Too girly? This game has some sweet Kawaii elements, so I think it fits perfectly.
