/Home streets are not PUBLIC streets

I am not sure where this idea came from, but they are not public streets, and were not meant to be public streets.

My street says very plainly "Innie's home street, owned by Innie".  I can kick anyone from my street.  The ability to ban from our streets was intended, but is buggy right now.  Stoot and Bees! have even admitted as such.

Please quit saying "They are PUBLIC streets!" when clearly they are not and were never meant to be truly public.  Not to mention, this is beta. Just because people are asking more controls over the streets they own, does not make them whiners, complainers, etc.  It means they are being beta players that are expressing something they think should be added, changed, or at least thought about.

Since there are so many topics on this...one more wont hurt. LOL

  • I have to agree :) When I heard that users had the power to kick, which I must admit I have no idea how to exercise, I was pretty much convinced that any bug with home streets was that we DON'T have as much control as we ought.

  • I completely agree with this. Seriously, these streets are OWNED by people, so don't expect them to be okay with it if you take their stuff.

  • Innie, while I agree that there is a need and a desire for controls of some kind, "where this idea comes from" is the house announce thread.

    • Quintus: yup, you only get it once ;)

Joe Blow: your street is public. once we do the proper launch, that will be more obvious. maximum signpost entries is 5 Posted 4 days ago by Bees! | Permalink

  • While they may not be intended to be "public" streets, they are certainly not private. Anyone can add me as a friend, put my name on their signpost, and come to my street. Aside from that, anyone visiting a "real friend" of mine that has my name on their signpost can use that signpost to travel to my street. Aside from blocking every player in the game, there is no way that your street is truly private.

  • Does it say "owned by Innie" ? NO! They are public, given that anyone can access them ,given the links to houses link to every single Glitch street in the game. If they are not public, then why can anyone visit without your permission?
Also, I think there was a new update that makes stuff unstealable.

  • Gee, it would be great if one of the staff would look over the threads of consternation on this and make a new thread where they spell out the current and future status of streets in no uncertain terms, as there sure is a lot of angst and bickering over it.
Posted 9 months ago by MrVolare Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yes Awesome, go in your house, hover your mouse over your door. Read it.

It says exactly: "Innie's Home Street Owned by Innie"
Posted 9 months ago by Innie✿, Obviously Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Innie, I am not arguing against your stance. Only pointing out one of several mentions to the public nature of the streets.
Posted 9 months ago by MrVolare Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I know, I was just showing you, like you showed me, something that was said.  It is not truly a PUBLIC street if I can ban from it.
Posted 9 months ago by Innie✿, Obviously Subscriber! | Permalink
  • If you're so concerned about people stealing stuff from your home street, put it all in your own house. Isn't that what a backyard is for? And since you can't control people from entering your housing street, it's better to be safe.

  • Mr Volare- Thank you for including in your post a reference !! ;D very helpful!

I am wondering though- and cant hunt it now- isnt there some official posts that seem to indicate my home street is owned by me because I am the only one who can upgrade my home street ?? (as oppsoed to upgrading my home and garden ) or some other such post that seems to read different than the one you reference... ?? ..
Also , I agree with Innie that being able to block others from my street seems to indicate towards the fact that I own the whole street (not just own my home) .

  • You can? What?
Posted 9 months ago by AwesomeCardinal2000 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Maybe we have different ideas of public than TS?

Like I said, Gee, it would be swell if they made a single post to address this. This amount of bickering over a beta feature is pretty sad.

That said, at least the drama gives us all something to do in the forums since the excitement of the community gardens has passed...
Posted 9 months ago by MrVolare Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Awesome, did I mention anything about that? Go back to the post that is talking about that.  I am only mentioning that they are not truly public streets, and those that are voicing their opinion over wanting more controls are not "whining", "complaining", etc.  The street has their name on it, when in their house it does saying "(enter name here) Home Street, owned by (enter name here)".  This street would not exist if they were not a member.  That means its their street.

I will state, I can ban people from entering my street (once the bug is corrected). So yes, I can control people from entering my street.

Also, voicing opinions on the forums, of a game that is in beta after a new feature has been released is not drama, either.  It is doing exactly what is intended beta to be! How will the devs and stoot know if we like things the way they are or not? How will they know if it functions as intended or not?  We tell them, that's how.  Thats why there are players in beta.

  • If I may suggest something.

There was an update, months back, about the block feature being improved. I can't remember how it was before the update, but it's different now. That shows they're willing to rework blocking. I'd like to see a small permissions system allowing us to block players from our streets without flat out blocking them.

I dunno how much that would actually help, but it seems like it'd be nice xD

  • I agree with Innie. If it says I own it, and I can modify it, and I can kick people off of it, then I don't think it's unreasonable that I have some control over what can/can't be lifted by randoms.

Can I just say: would a staff member please make a post about how home streets are supposed to work?  What items are supposed to be lockable?  Is this still up for debate?

I think a straightforward answer from staff would really help here, because right now all we have are some contradictory replies from the main housing thread.

  • I really dont understand why anyone would want to got to someone's street other than to rob them if they dont know the person.  I have no interest in going to anyone's street,  espicially since they are all the same except for privately owned items placed there.  Obviously if I put a pig feeder and a meat collector in my yard I dont want you to take it, Im forced to because my backyard is the size of a kids sandbox.  Argue all you want,  but you know that items on someone's street arent placed there for anyone to take.

  • Innie, I just started a thread to ask about this more directly. To be clear, the "high dramatics" mention is not referencing this conversation. I realize it could look like that, starting that thread after posting in this one. It just seems the easiest answer would be straight from the horse, asked directly of the horse. Of Course.

  • TS made it clear "8 weeks" ago that folks were going to be able to random walk their way through the housing dimension. The paths between houses would in fact be transient to a degree, so there was no defined path from place to place -- the places a traveling Glitchen would find themselves were not certain.

In other words, random folks may or may not show up on the outside of your house.

  • Public or not it comes down to others just respecting opinions and ideas.  No fight is needed if we just realize people will view this personal street thing as they will.

I think all the drama is just that drama.  Feel like someone took something of yours. Fine. Feel like someone didn't thats fine too . But making someone feel bad for what they feel is just silly.

I happen to think taking things like feeders is wrong but I am not going to go complain on the forum.  I did however share my idea on a way to change it in ideas.

When I leave gifts I attach a note and that is still no safeguard the intended will get the gift. It is a risk.

If you don't like what you see suggest an alternative.   Not all matters will be settled and people will have to adjust.  Just as I may have to adjust to whatever the game mechanics are.

Going out of your way to criticize others is pointless.   Just carry on and play how you will.

( Not directed to OP just saying what I feel about this whole topic)

To Innie, I get the feeling you feel you are being stigmatized for speaking out and I am sorry you feel that way.  You have the right as any other player does to voice your concerns and discomforts and dislikes.   I might be wrong about this but if you feel that way - you have every right to voice what does and doesn't work for you. Just as the others have a right to voice what they like/dislike without someone calling it a label.   ( griefing, being greedy etc.)

  • I've decided to look at it as my front yard in RL.  It's mine to decorate and landscape as I see fit and  I can tell neighborhood kids to get off my lawn, but that doesn't mean that the dog next door won't pee on my tree or some jerk won't steal my lawn gnome while I'm at work.
Posted 9 months ago by Soupie♨ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • oh TS honey, this was not posted in response to any certain way that I feel, or that I felt stigmatized.  This post was entirely based on how I see others being treated. ;)

I am good. My tone of voice is very relaxed. Im all good :D I usually am ;)

  • Soupie - the difference, though, is that in real life there are legal consequences if someone steals something off of your front lawn.  If we're equating the two, then there should be consequences in Glitch as well.
Posted 9 months ago by Aurora Dellaterra Subscriber! | Permalink
  • You should assume all risks when you place things on your home street, just like in RL.
Posted 9 months ago by AwesomeCardinal2000 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • We need a word between public and private.

Homes are completely private. you have to bring someone in, or give them a key.  Anyone can enter your street, but it's not the same as the streets in the world because some things are locked to the street if you place it (animal sticks, icons, stills).

One big and needed change, trees shouldn't be able to be poison by non-owner, nor animals taken away from the street (either by capture or youth potion).  However they should be harvestable.  Like the rock is mineable, but that's not a problem because it respawns.

Streets are semi-private, or is it semi-public.  Privblic?  Publate?  :)

    just my $.02

  • @innie Technical point: when you hover on your door, it says "Innie's Home, Owned by Innie", not "Innie's Home STREET, Owned by Innie".
That said, I agree that we could more control over the glitchen that can come to visit our home street.
Posted 9 months ago by Ygasuasu Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Ygasuasu, You have misread what I said.  Read what I wrote.....nevermind, I will just say it again.

Again, please go inside your house. Then hover over your door.

From outside you are hovering over the door, which is giving you information on the house.  Go inside your house, then hover the door. That is giving you information about the street.  I promise, I know exactly what I am talking about.

Infact, here is a picture with the info: Innie's Home STREET, Owned by Innie
Posted 9 months ago by Innie✿, Obviously Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Okay, so here's my take on it: Items should have some sort of 'lock' option so that some idiot doesn't come and take your feeder, collector, etc. If you have a problem with that, go put your laptop, TV, or Xbox in your front yard, and don't be pissed when I take it. That is an exaggeration due to this being a game, yes, but the idea is the same. The streets are not public, just like your front yard is not public. It is your property, and therefore just because anyone can get to it doesn't meant that they have the right to rip up your landscaping or take your lawn ornaments.

Just my thoughts, hate me if you wish.

  • I'm not sure that one should attach so much importance to the word "owned".  Just because you own something, doesn't necessarily give you exclusive rights to it.  For example, sidewalks and easements.

I do agree that Tiny Speck should state how they want the street to work, but I don't think that will settle anything since people will just start complaining about the way it's intended to be instead of the (perhaps transitional) way it is now.

  • > but I don't think that will settle anything since people will just start complaining about the way it's intended to be instead of the (perhaps transitional) way it is now.

Janitch, I think that is pretty fair :)

I just replied in one of the other threads roughly on this same topic. My advice would be to be patient for a while and not get too worked up about it right now. It is not going to change in the short term and there will be plenty of time in the future to freak out, if, after a healthy period of living with the new system, coupled with sober reflection and analysis, we then go ahead and make a decision which you don't like  :)

  • cross posting here -
I know I have incomplete info on style-switching and cultivation for my front steet area -
but I am guessing that even with these new changes coming : I am NOT likely to spend time with personalizing my front yard space if the "control " that Stoot mentions above is not changed about.

Like Miss Parsley says above- why would I want to personalize my front yard space if random players (ie not keyholders or myself) can come along and make changes that cost me time, currants , game resources, and annoyance to then correct back to what I wanted for my front street ?
    Answer _ I wouldn't . Why would I bother with that aggravation ?
SO , again , for me, then the result is : that then that -lack- of change on TS part -
(which yep, they are totally entitled to build their game their way , and yep , it's beta so I am just expressing my beta player feelings and ideas in a non-freaked out way )
will ***reduce*** how much creativity , and socializing (and other things) that I will have in the game.
------- and that reduction lessens my enjoyment of the game-and maybe others enjoyment to.

(eg : A player (random or even a friend) comes by on a tour of streets hoping to see recurse eve decorations (or some such ) -well they will get a boring , non-enjoyable street on my street -because I won't have enjoyed decorating. Why? Because I didn't decorate . Why ? Because I couldn't lock down my decorations. Why ? Because that's the design choice the devs made after we tested it out in Beta.
    {Oh , I see } . )
The above parenthetical example would also apply to *many * other examples :
like , say , a player that is wandering streets for fun on a gathering expedition -cause my street wont have much resources to gather if there's no way for me to control what resources are there.
