New Skills Page

Theres a new skills page, looks absolutely awesome, tho for me its a little laggy to load (most likely my lappy being troublesome)

One question it has posed tho is what happens if I unlearn a skill I have upgraded with imagination? Is it lost or held in limbo in case I relearn the skill.

  • I also like the new skills page.  A cleaner presentation is often more useful than one cluttered with icons that add no information.

While I agree it's not great to not support the most popular browser, I empathize as someone who has had to do wacky stuff to support IE.  I'm sure it's temporary guys and if you switch to a better browser, you'll see lots of other benefits anyway.  Maybe give Chrome or Firefox a try?

  • ...and if need be you can get the portable versions of Firefox and Chrome via portableapps.com.

  • To be sure, there are a couple other pages which had problems with IE 7, 8 and IE 9 set for compatibility mode which we never made any adjustments for.

With IE 9 in normal mode, the skills page should look mostly ok. If you are still using IE8 and still want to stick with IE no matter what, I do suggest moving  to IE 9.

Matter of opinion. As I said, I have tried firefox. I do not believe it is a better browser. It is laggier, among other things. Fortunately, since I have all my skills this isn't that big of a deal to me right now. I did use firefox to check out the skills page and I have to agree with those who say it is a step backwards. The old version was simpler to use with the rollover function and the new pale colors do nothing for me. About the only thing I do like is the brain capacity being shown at the top of the page. The rest seems to just be change for change's sake, and that's just a waste.

  • Kevbob- I'll upgrade to 9 this week. thank you for the more polite response.

Janitch - you make the assumption we haven't already tried Chrome or Foxfire. for the record i *hate* Foxfire, and Chrome doesn't feel right. I'm aware that IE has issues for programmers though. I know it is a pain in the butt on the other side.

  • Several people seem to like IE, so I'll clarify my opinion of the browsers.  (Note that this is from a programmer's perspective, so it may or may not be relevant):
    - Chrome: fastest JavaScript, most stable and best architecture (processes for tabs)
    - IE: second fastest JavaScript, least stable, least standards compliant
    - Firefox: works

The web browser is the second most important piece of software on your computer (after the operating system itself), and you should pick the best one.  You're not stuck with the one that the OS vendor installed by default. (And, IE's share continues to erode, so "safety in numbers" isn't going to last forever.)

Personally, I do all my browsing with Chrome as well as using it for developing (it has great developer tools built in). I test with Firefox and IE to make sure those browsers work as well. (Safari is close enough to Chrome and the other browsers have too small a market share to bother with.)

  • About 8-9 Glitchen in this thread is requesting that the old-style icons for the bottom part of the skill tree can be. I'm guessing it's for compatibility but I would really appreciate the old-style icons (in the skill tree part i know that it's everywhere else when you click on the skills but thats not the point. Furthermore I can't read the information of each skill anymore when highlighted with the mouse, but thats kind of unrelated). I love how the skills are organized now though!

  • Pixieyelsraek / Audaria  / Janitch: Sorry, I should have been more clear. We do not officially support *IE8* or earlier. IE9 should be fine. And, if we can make things work in any older browser without too much effort, we always do.

Janitch: IE is not the most popular browser anymore (and hasn't been for a while). It is the 4th most popular browser for accessing glitch.com (and trails Safari by a pretty big margin). Of that, IE8 is a subset … around 2.5% of visits come from IE8. If it was the most popular browser, it is likely that Glitch would work on it. But, it is an older version of a browser that is losing marketshare every day AND (more importantly) it has a very different way of doing things than any other browser which makes it much harder to support/develop for.

Pixieyelsraek, it's not meant to be "rude" — it's just a practical concern. There are many browsers Glitch won't work on. And it requires Flash. And it is only in English. If "the tables were turned", I would understand because I know that anyone who develops software has to make choices about compatibility and testing and how much they are willing to invest to make sure their stuff works on specific outlier hardware/software combos vs investing in core functionality for target platforms.

  • Interesting that IE usage is so low for Glitch, but great news as I'd love to see it go away.

I was talking about the general browser market share, since I didn't specifically know about Glitch. And it does look like IE's lead is almost gone; woo hoo!

  • 15% of our paying customers still use IE6

    *cries*

Has dropped by 10% in the last 8 months though, so there may be hope for us
