  • Can you sign out entirely and turn off your computer, and still have new skill learning start automatically?
Posted 14 months ago by MasterOfMyDestiny Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @MasterOfMyDestiny, yes. The Academy will automatically start your glitch on the next queued skill regardless of whether or not you are logged in or whether or not your computer is on.

  • Just an FYI, to make sure everyone enters this with open eyes, but be aware that signing up to this gives the Glitch Acadamy code permission to "Change wardrobe, vanity, name, status updates, etc.".
Posted 14 months ago by Glumesc Subscriber! | Permalink
  • yeah, i noticed that permission too, and it seemed a bit much to ask for what i would be getting out of it, so i didn't go through with the signup. too bad that it's not possible to check out an overview of the service before signing up!

  • Hi Everyone,

For those concerned about the authorization notice, the truth is: apps cannot do any of the things that it states.

Sadly, this makes the whole process confusing. Right now, apps can only make auctions for you or tell your glitch what to learn. You can verify this yourself by looking at the commands at the API reference site: http://developer.glitch.com/api/

So let me make this clear: Right now, contrary to what the authorization says, apps cannot change your wardrobe, vanity, name, or status updates.

Hopefully, when they implement these features in the future, they will allow apps to limit their access permissions so you don't have to worry.

But @Glumesc is still right. You should always be aware of your account security and trust those you give permissions to. I hope that over time such trust will develop between this community and the tools I create for it.

For those interested, I also commented over at the Developers Forum on this issue.

  • I heard that with the Greasemonkey script for queuing skills, if you queued multiple at a time it would count as you having started all the skills in your queue as far as the increased skill learning time is concerned. So if you queued 3 skills, they would all technically have been started and your learning times would go up accordingly. With the academy, is each skill only started after the current is finished, or are they all started, paused, and resumed once you finish your current one? Was this even ever true for the Greasemonkey script or did I just hear wrong?
Posted 14 months ago by Devers Subscriber! | Permalink
  • OMG wooow awesome stuff!!!!!!!
Posted 14 months ago by Bbcversus Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Devers, that's incorrect about the Greasemonkey script (unless you are thinking of a different one). None of the location queue scripts I've encountered have started learning at the same time. The Academy is more advanced in that it can queue skills that require prerequisites that have not yet been learned but will be learned. The Greasemonkey script could not go from Mining I, II, III, to IV, the Academy will be able to.
Posted 14 months ago by TomC Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Don't know where you heard that Devers, since they've never worked that way.
Posted 14 months ago by WindBorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @WindBorn and TomC: awesome, actually glad I was wrong haha. Thanks for the heads up!

Edit: I'd also like to add that I think this will become a serious permanent fixture in Glitch gaming culture, seeing as it adds a huge and useful feature to the game! Nice work man
Posted 14 months ago by Devers Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Actually, the version RobotGymnast wrote in Beta allows you to queue skills you can't learn yet:

  • I am a very happy student at Glitch Academy. I never have to worry about being away from the textbooks now.

I can not use Grease Monkey scripts as I am on Safari and this API does not care.

ETA: I still have 29 skills to learn! I am never going to graduate! :)
Posted 14 months ago by Kookaburra Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The Academy is great... except when it isn't!

Case in point: there is some bug I stumbled upon today, where the study stopped mid-learning and the script jumped to the next skill without reason - but leaving things unresolved. Now I don't know how safe can be to stop this new skill learning too and force the resumption of the former.

Just an observation: maybe the bug happened when I got a _second emblem of the same type_ I already had in my inventory. Not sure about that, though.
Posted 14 months ago by Ayzad Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Hi Ayzad,

I am sorry to hear about your issue. Could you describe your issue further in detail?

I am concerned this could be a problem with Glitch's API. The Academy always checks through the API to see if you are learning a skill or not. If you are, it skips you completely. You can see this command at the developer site: skills.listLearning

Are you also sure that the Academy switched you to your next skill? Did you receive a Report Card (email) that stated so? If you did not, it could have also been a bug in Glitch's software.

    Peace.

  • Great app, especially for those who don't use Grease Monkey. +200 awesome points! I think this goes next to Zog as my favorite apps.
Posted 14 months ago by Nerdcore Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Hi Code Dev... I'm sorry, but I don't really have any more information than I already gave. I have not set the email reports option on, so I only noticed the bug when I entered the skill screen by chance.

I took advantage of a learning pause to jump on the half-learned skill, though, so now everything looks all right.

  • Bump - I would hate for new players to miss finding out about this feature!
Posted 14 months ago by Jewel Stoned Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @CodeDev - I've experienced another weird academy bug (or maybe the same)

    Here's what happened

    - The above mentioned bug: While I'm learning Tinkering IV it suddenly jumps to the next skill (Eyeballery)
    - As soon as Eyeballery ends, I resume learning Tinkering IV
    - When T IV ends, the Academy correctly enrolls me in Tinkering V

---but if I look at my study plan... Tinkering IV is still top of the list, even while I'm learning T V already!
Posted 14 months ago by Ayzad Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Hi @Ayzad,

Thanks for the description! Fortunately, this is a minor display bug that has already been fixed in the next version of the Academy.

This occurs when you have a skill queued up, for example Tinkering IV. When you are ready to learn a new skill, you select Tinkering IV yourself before the Academy enrollment happens. Because the Academy did not enroll you, it does not get removed from your class schedule. Naturally, it does not affect the Academy enrolling you in your other classes.

In the meantime, you can simply 'Drop' this already learned class from your schedule if you'd like. Hope this helps! Peace.

  • Sorry, i'm a tad bit confused [ new player here] so if i register, for example tinkering IV, does it automatically makes me learn that skill?
Posted 14 months ago by Emilia Rosalinda Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It will enroll you in the classes in the order you select - as long as you meet the prerequisites.  If you do not, it will skip that class.  Actually, it does not let you stage a skill before all of the prerequisites are either completed or staged, but you can circumvent that by deleting a skill before it is complete (you still can not study the advanced one).

So, it will let you select all the course you need to get to Tinkering IV and then select TIV - once you complete the other ones, it will register you in in TIV (it will register you in all of the courses along the way too)

  • Love this app, thanks!
I was thinking of developing an app that allows you to learn a skill down to the last few minutes and then switch to the next one (to avoid longer learning periods on the later skills). I don't have time for this but I'm throwing this out here as a suggestion :-)

  • Hi CodeDev and thanks for the explanation... but I'm afraid it is not my case.

I finished learning Tinkering V and the Academy enrolled me correctly in Engineering... yet today checking my status I discovered that Englineering was auto-stopped with 6.23.13 remaining and I found that while I was away it jumped to the next skill (Refining), completed it and it is now on to Refining II (next on the list). What gives?
