can we just settle this. family game or not?

i can't really find an official definition for what a family game is or not, but i mean, it's essentially the same as a 'family film' in regards to the use of language. so, while 'family game' doesn't have an objective definition (yet), 'family film' does. it's "a film genre that is designed to appeal to a variety of age groups and, thus, families." i think we all agree that the game appeals to many age groups. i suppose we could also agree that the game is PG-13 considering that a player must be 13 years or older to play (with parental consent). films typically are upgraded to PG-13 from PG when language is used sparingly (generally, less than 4 times) or the movie is especially violent. note that Glitch never uses language and is never violent, so the game really should be PG or even G. Certainly, it would be rated E for everyone with a disclaimer that they cannot control the content experienced online.

ultimately though, the game has parallels with a family film that's rated PG-13. and as such, we shouldn't use language.

thank you for your time.

(edit: ToS says 14 years or older, so I guess PG-14 would be more accurate.)

  • i find i am more offended by nannyness than i am by coarse language.

but this train left the rails the moment dawgg started to insist that because the game might appeal to a broad audience that it is a family game and that everybody ought to conform to his behavioral standards.

it's like arguing with a fish, only goofier.

and there is only one appropriate response to the extremely absurd.

often it involves a trombone, which is why mine is handy here at my desk.  sometimes the answer involves jello or a well placed interpretive dance, but a trombone is very handy and you can keep it nearby in case of emergencies.

by the way, if you do not wish for your committee report to be delivered to the assembly in doggerel verse, you should not assign me to do the reporting. i have preternatural ability with the weird. my proudest moment was the day i managed to get four hundred people to take the afternoon off to celebrate a holiday that does not exist.

if i can respond to institutional boredom with a giant processional in which "the wheels on the bus go round and round" is sung as a hymn, one man's stultifying campaign to police other people's behavior is merely an opportunity for comedy.

  • Mr. Dawgg

If  your answer is true, which I honestly find completely impossible to believe that you do not have ANY children.  That forces me to believe one of the following is true.

    1.  You have step children and your significant other male or female have custody.
    2.  As a child you were forced to stay inside and watch tv as family entertainment/games.
    3.  You are under the age of 13 and your parents refuse to let you play without a G rating
    4.  You are being paid by a rich kid to browbeat everyone to allowing kids to play.
    5.  You are so bored with your life that when Glitch is closed you had to entertain us.
    6.  Your are stone cold barkers.

Nobody would go to the lengths you have in attempting to convince everyone that your point of view is valid on any level including using language.  The language comment in your opening statement has caused me to howl in laughter all day.  As kids like to say "you funny boy"

  • I feel like the title of this thread should be changed to "can we just settle this. family game or family game?", since obviously no answer but "Of course it's a family game" will be met with any sort of co-operation.

  • Aw come on Bio what fun would that be, besides it could be a family game if the family doesn't have any kids like MrDawgg since it would only consist of adults.  Besides it has kept some of us from playing on the freeway while Glitch is closed.

Unless we could play with our pickles while the game is closed.  I'm easily entertained.  Plus I use real language. We could use smoke signals, is that considered a language unless it somehow is referring to drugs in a sexual way.

  • The mocking is not people not agreeing with me. I welcome people to be against me. I just ask that they bring reason and actually address the points that I bring up.

Take for example Eliza who simply said I disagreed with her. I did not simply disagree with your definition. I even found a hole in your definition. What happens when people play an MMO on a LAN? Does that then make it a family experience because it is now being played within close proximity? She didn't respond to that.

Moving on, the mocking I'm talking about is things like Julie's post and the many, many posts by flask, WindBorn, Pallas, et al. You guys are just being disrespectful to me. I don't really care, but it comes off as childish. I hope you guys realize that the peanut gallery and lurkers see you guys as jackoffs. And yes, Gadzooks, I consider jackoff and ass ok. I said that very early in the thread.

    Quirk,

I will still contend, Quirk, that the game hasn't been marketed at all really. Stewart may change his marketing approach. We don't know. To be honest, I don't see why he would want only a narrow age group, but it's his game. You don't agree that the game falls into category 1 of your requirements, and that's cool. I don't agree with your extreme examples. But, a game that is so massive is bound to have something for everyone. Even families. Take WoW again. You can do so many different things in that game, that I don't see why you *can't* take a small experience from it and just enjoy that as a family experience. You don't have to do the PVP, 25 man raids, etc. You can stick to the more intimate activities and just do those with your family. So, I think there is opportunities to 'limit' the number of players to fulfill your #1 requirement. Maybe not that many right now, but Glitch is really a solo game right now.

You disagree that the game has widespread appeal, but the fact is that you have, right now, a very wide range of players playing. Taylor Swift I believe is 17? and Napabeth is an older lady. Those are just two that I know. I'll have to find the link to the thread of everyone's age. Or someone else can. But the range was pretty wide. And it was well outside of what Stewart was aiming for.

So, I don't know. I like your criteria, and we'll have to see what the final game has in store. I'm sure your idea about what is/ins't a family game is a work in progress or just off the top of your head. I welcome you to revise your idea as you think on it more. I know I will adapt my idea on what it is as I think on it more as well.

    Ferond,

    Thank you for your reply.

    1. Do you have any hope that everyone here will agree not to use foul language in General Chat (or whatever replaces it)?—Yes, I do. Wishful thinking, I know. Heaven forbid.

    3. Why does it matter to you if people use foul language?—It doesn't really matter to me that much. I would just prefer people refrained from using it. I think it would be better for everyone if people didn't.

    4. One possibility I've picked up from your posts is that maybe you would like to have some kind of community agreement to back you up when you object to foul language that you see. Is that right?—Oh yeah, for sure. That's the whole point of the thread now that I think on it. I just didn't really think of it the way you're saying it. That didn't happen, but I'm ok with how it turned out.

I feel satisfied with the conclusion. That is, Quirk pretty much found the information that I was looking for. That is, the game is designed for 20 something pseudo-intellectuals. Which, I actually already knew that. But, while I feel that the game's intent is not family oriented according to Stewart, I still feel that there is potential for that type of play. Certainly, the people who play are an eclectic group of people. And the game does allow 14 year olds and up to play. I feel it will appeal to them still. Others disagree, but we shall see.

I see what you're saying about trying to appeal to their better interest. For me, when I said, 'hey it' sa family game, let's not use language,' in GC, what would happen is people would turn it into a discussion of what is or isn't a family game. They would ignore the use of language entirely and miss my point. I suppose I shouldn't have even brought up family at all. The real point is that it's public chat, and the game has a wide variety of people playing it. We should be more responsible and try not to offend those people. I for one simply prefer no language. But whatever. It doesn't really matter.

It's not censorship. It's simply being more responsible.

    Neoqualia,

"Mr. Dawgg, you first appeared to be asking a question, to which people replied.  You rejected their answer and then appeared to try to make an argument that people shouldn't use bad language in the game."

That's not really accurate. I asked a question of whether or not we can settle a dispute that comes up in GC whenever I call someone on language. It was also more rhetorical because I knew we couldn't. Whatever. But, then, after asking it, and providing a pretty fair reason and analysis and request, I got smart-allecky responses. One even from Stewart Butterfield himself. But, we're sworn enemies, so it's cool. The smart allecky attacks never ceased.  Then I went afk for a day and a half. On returning, I provided more input in reply to the comments posted. I then proceeded to reply to individual posts. At that point in the thread, it had become so long that I felt I needed to tailor my responses to each individual so that I knew they got the full idea of what I was trying to convey. I didn't want to chance that they just skimmed through the thread. So I did repeat myself a lot, but maybe not to those individuals. I did this as a courtesy. I do not mind replying to people in threads that I start (which I sometimes refer to as 'my' threads).

"  I (among many, many others) pointed out that your argument fails. "

You used almost childish deductive reasoning that assumes life is black and white. You didn't even address my definition of a family game. You didn't address anything. It was very poor. Life isn't black and white. Again, it's not a family game because of use of language or not. It's a family game for other reasons. As a family game, we shouldn't use language. But let's take 'family game' out of the equation. Let's just dismiss that definition and just completely ignore it entirely. OK?

I feel it's safe to agree that the game has a very eclectic bunch. I'm not going to cite specific people, but we know of at least one (me) who prefers GC and LC to be free of egregious foul language and non-clean discourse. Because of the fact that there is a wide range of people playing and reading GC, we should, as adults, agree that the use of foul language may be inappropriate (as it is inappropriate in any public setting) for public chat. Agree or disagree, Neoqualia? This not to protect the children. This is not to censor anyone. This is so we can behave like human beings. Eloquence and grace.

" So it seems that you are doing nothing but pronouncing how *you* think people should act.  But what you are failing to do is convince us why we should listen to you.  What is your standing?  Why should we think that Glitch is public-like-a-grocery-store (into which anyone can wander and do business) rather than public-like-a-pub (into which only adults can do business). "

I'm not. I already addressed Biohazard? or was it Nanookie? But they basically said the same thing. We're talking about social norms and mores in general. They dictate that foul language shouldn't be used. Not me. And even if there is a society that dictates otherwise, being accepting, good people, we should understand that people from these societies that do dicate such are going to be playing the game. Because of that, we should refrain from using language in public chat.

" Others have given *reasons* why they disagree with you.  What would it take to convince you that you are on the wrong side of this?  If you can't suggest a clear answer to that, then you are simply being unreasonable in the sense that you are only stating your opinion as though it were fact (that is, if there are no conditions under which your statement/assertion could possibly be false, then it is merely dogma)."

I always admit I may be off when in the face of good reason. But I don't think everything is black and white either. There are many right answers. Also, why is the burden on me to prove myself wrong? Think about how dumb that is. To be honest, I can't think of a good reason to disagree with myself? So I'm wrong? What?

"  If you can't demonstrate why others *should* agree with you (rationally or at least psychologically), you shouldn't expect that people will."

I feel I have. I provided a clear-cut definition of what a family game is. Most of you disagreed. Whatever. But, Qurck pretty much provided the reason why Stewart feels that it's not a family game. Though I'm still holding out for the full on release of the game. They could still change marketing strategies to try to appeal to a younger crowd. Maybe they take-out no no powder and other things that you guys consider bad. Time will tell. I think the current shell of the game could be modified to be a more family oriented game. Currently, he claims he's aiming for 20 something psuedo intellectuals. Cool. Whatever. I don't know if that's the wisest demographic to choose from, but we'll see how it pans out. I'll have to find the ages thread, but I think the current ages are actually a bit higher than that, and the age range is definitely wider than what he aimed for.

"Along the same lines, given Stoot's joke (which I did find funny), we have reason to believe that at least for a while Tiny Speck was watching this thread.  We may have bought subscriptions, but they're paying the bills--we're on their turf.  They don't have to allow us free speech, but they have declined to formally "side" with you here.  You might want to consider that reason to think that your position is not that of "management.""

They won't side with us on any topic like this. Part of the game is creating the subculture. I realized that half-way into the thread. Someone else came to a similar conclusion, but outof respect I won't mention his name. But, Stewart very well may agree with me that it can be a family game. We don't know, and we won't know. But what we do know is that we do not have the right to use foul language wilnil. (http://beta.glitch.com/forum/general/6283/#reply-69764)

""That said, I've seen discussions in global chat that I found offensive, but no "bad language" was used--just English words individually perfectly acceptable in normal discourse.  I just have *NO* need to hear of people's detailed sexual prolicliviites while I'm trying to milk my butterflies.  So, like Pallas (I think it was Pallas), I turned off Global Chat for a while.  More disturbing to me, I saw piggies with names that were deeply (DEEPLY) hostile to women.  So I renamed them after the kindest things I could think of.  Problem solved!"

I think it's self evident that when requesting no foul language that we avoid talking about sex and other taboo topics in GC. Don't you? We seem to at least be on the same page that we don't like some content in GC. Sure, you decided to step out. I'm confrontational. So, I ask people to not use it. You're more of a pacifist. I'm cool with that too.

Thanks everyone for your replies. See you there.

  • You seriously need to get a life. There are far more important things that you could be devoting your time to. There are children out there being abused and you're spending all of this time whining and stirring up trouble over the possibility of them reading a bad word. Words that they are going to hear many many times regardless of how much you try to shelter them. In my experience, the more you shelter them from anything(drugs, bad language, sex), the more intriguing they become. True story, Dawgg.

It doesn't bother me. But it kinda bothers me that if I so much as make a snarky remark, I might get thrown in time-out and/or have my account deleted. But you guys can directly insult me, and nothing happens. We'll see what happens, I guess.

  • Maybe people are being snarky with you because your posts are quite frustrating, and now we know why. The reason you dug in your heels & refused to accept any of the evidence provided to you is because you didn't care. This was never about whether Glitch is a "family game", or the definition of "family game," or any of the other nonsense you spouted in the first page-and-a-half. It was about YOU and YOUR preferences and how YOU think everyone else should behave. Knowing that you wouldn't get very far by starting a thread about how people should watch language simply because you want them to, you took the "THE CHILDREN! THE CHILDREN! WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN?" approach. And then you claim you don't even LIKE children?!?! You thought by invoking the chil'en, you could manipulate people into agreeing with you just so you could get what you wanted. Not cool.
In closing, your agruments are just a bunch of shit, and your protestations about your mistreatment are full of santorum.

  • I understand where you are coming from. I went to a Mexican restaurant with my girlfriend a few weeks ago and a redneck sitting behind us was talking very loudly about having sexual intercourse with his goat and how he couldn't get the urine smell off of his member, legs and stomach(I think the goat must have urinated on him). And of course all of the people that were with him are laughing and having a good time, at our expense.

This is just the day and age we live in.

We then went home and watched a Cary Grant film and dreamed together about how nice it would be if people still spoke, dressed and acted like they did in the film. But times have changed, and the more prevalent usage of bad language is a very minuscule problem compared to say, Glitch taking forever to go live! Haha... Or equally important problems, such as: the monstrous piles of garbage accumulating near large cities, clean water becoming scarce, our fuzzy(and some that are not so fuzzy) friends becoming extinct because of our "needs", Global Warming, over population, Glitch server lag, our earth being deforested, etc. I just can't imagine someone being this passionate about trying to get a company, that would like to be as profitable as possible, to enforce rules that would lead it's subscriber base to become smaller and smaller because 0n3 d00d has a problem. 1337 speak annoys the hell out of me, more than bad language ever could.

I have no idea of any of what I just said makes sense. I'm on a strong sedative for insomnia, that instead just makes me loopy and write long pointless replies to pointless arguments on a really cool game's forum.

  • @anyone who might be interested: I've posted some of my thoughts about naughty language and behavior in my closet in the Off Topic forum.

@Mr. Dawgg, I have some more questions.

One of the words you think are ok is every bit as offensive to me as any of the other words we've discussed. I know at least one other person in Glitch who would feel the same way. Do you agree to stop using those words?

Some of the things you've said and done in this thread are even more offensive to me than foul language, and I imagine many others here feel the same way. In fact I imagine that the offensiveness of your posts is the main reason that some people have treated you so cruelly. Do you agree not to talk that way and act that way any more?

Your whole attitude in parts of this thread has been more offensive to me than any of the juvenile naughty talk and behavior. Do you agree to change your attitude?

Apart from that, if you find out that some of the things you say, or the way that you say them, or even some of your ways of thinking, that seem perfectly innocent to you, are offensive and and even psychologically damaging to women, or to blacks, or to gays, or to asians, or to latinos, or to transgenders, or to boy lovers, will you agree to stop thinking and talking that way?

ETA: What I wrote above looks too rhetorical, contentious and distracting to me, but I need to think some more about what I really want to know and what I really want to say. Meanwhile, I really would like to know how you would answer those questions.

later on in the day i am going to redefine "family" as "suitable to my personal taste" and then if i still have energy, i am going to redefine the words "appropriate", "hat", and "otolaryngology" so they suit me better.

  • I am reminded of the use of "frak" in the Battlestar reboot. It was fine, if somewhat silly, solution. That is until a later season when Starbuck uses it not just as a swear, but has a command for a sexual activity.

    "Frak me! Frak me hard!."

    Complete fail.

Also there was the misguided KFC tie-in: The Frak Pak. Clearly no one at KFC corporate took time to learn what "frak" meant.

  • Mr. Dawgg:

I am getting frustrated.  I mean, I was getting frustrated last night, and now I'm awake, and I'm already getting frustrated.

I am frustrated because you, sir, do not listen.  You say I ignore that you pointed out a "flaw" in my definition of "family game."  No, I did not ignore you.  I have stated various times that, in my personal opinion, a family game is defined by both its appeal to all family members and its ability to be played by a family at the same time, using the same console/board/what-have-you.  No, a mother and daughter playing on separate laptops in a kitchen does not meet my criteria.  That is a family playing together, not playing a family game.

A family watching a marathon of the Saw movies is a family watching movies together, but not watching family movies.  Do you see the difference?  This is the difference I am trying to establish.  You can play anything "together," that doesn't make everything a family game.  A family playing Mario Kart on the Wii is a family playing a family game.  A family playing GTA on a Playstation is a family playing a game together, not playing a family game.  If Glitch should ever decide to come out with a family-friendly console version (one in which children under 17 could play without parental permission, would not have access to the online chats, and could leave the non-parent adults out of it, and one with fewer alcohol and innuendo), then that version would be a family game, but the original MMOG would still not be a family game.

I am also exceedingly frustrated by the fact that you claim that people ignore the so-called flaws you find and then ignore the questions posed to you.  I reiterate: If you are not calling for any kind of censorship, what do you want?  You do not have, nor like children.  Why do you care?

As for myself, I love children.  If I disliked them, I'd go crazy.  I deal with anywhere between 32 and 100 children per day at work, and babysit most weekends.  I think kids are great.  I love the shit they come up with, but I do not want them in my game.  If I wanted them in my game, I'd go to Neopets, or any one of the multitude of kid-centric online games.  I like Glitch because it is not a family game (by the way, since Stoot has said it is not for kids and is for adults, how the hell are you still saying "It could be a family game"?  A family game should at least be able to include kids!) but isn't full of war.

I am also going to continue posting my questions to you every time you post anything in this thread until you answer them.  If I can't get any answers out of it, I can at least frustrate you the way you are frustrating me.

  • Innie: I'm reminded of a day last week when a 6 year old named Chris insisted to me that his name does not contain the letter "i".  He even told me that his name was spelled C-h-r-s.  I gave up around the time that he put his hands over his ears and shouted, "There is NO I!  STOP SAYING THERE IS!"

This week, he very happily told me that he could hear the "i" in "Chris."  I feel like Dawgg is permanently stuck in "Chrs" mode.

I like hugs!  Thank you!  :)

  • Eliza, my cousin at age 2 requested that my mother provide him with "peanut butter and jelly on bread - but no sandwich!"

    I can relate.
