Questions on Pig Feeding Mechanics

Did a search in the wiki and the general forums and didn't see anything answering these questions. I figure, if I am wondering, might as well have a place for others that wonder as well. I don't see any clear information on pig feeding.

Questions:
1. How much do pigs need to eat each day in order to survive?

2. Do different energy foods feed a pig better?

3. I've heard rumors that pigs eat food off of trees and the ground? Is this true?

4. If 3 is true, what is the advantage of a remote feeder?

  • 1. not sure, but I had 7 piggies and 1 feeder and they went though it completely in about one RL day. (probably less but I need to sleep lol)

    2. from what I've seen, it's all the same if you put the food in a feeder.

    3. I think it is. I've never not had a feeder and I rarely use my garden (and put food on the ground) so I wouldn't notice :P

    4. If you have a Piggy Feeder, your piggies don't die (if you keep it full, that is) and eat stuff you could've harvested/used/eaten.

As you can probably tell, I didn't do much learning of the logistics of animal keeping beyond making sure they didn't die (and were all happily named) LOL

  • 1. I think I've seen mentioned by others that without a feeder, you just need to feed them once a RL day.

Personally, I just left some veggies and grain on the ground for my one piggy I had before I got RHK, and he did fine. I also fed him enough crops like every 2-3 RL days to get like 16 seeds for my garden. It seemed to work out well. I originally had two piggies, but the second one died, even though I fed him a ton when he said he was starving.

    2. I have no idea. With a feeder it doesn't matter. It seems grain may not work as well as say, tomatoes, when you're hand feeding them.

    3. Piggies do eat off the ground. I don't know about off trees though. I've never seen my trees suffer at the mouths of my piggies before, though I've heard these rumors.

    4. The feeder just seems to manage their food better. So long as you fill it, you never have to worry about them (or I haven't).

  • Regarding trees, I've seen pigs go up to a tree, say "Yum!", and the tree diminish in size.  I've also harvested a tree at the same time as a pig saying "Yum!" next to a tree, seen it diminish to its smallest size, then instantly jump back to a full tree with fruits or bubbles when my harvest finishes.  Pretty certain they eat from trees!  ...now, *how* they reach those high branches is a mystery...

  • do pigs fed with crops from a feeder produce seeds?

  • no, piggies fed from a feeder do not produce plops, so, no seeds...sorry, although, on the one hand it would be fairly nice - on the other it would be a helluva mess!!  lol
...only when you 'hand-feed' piggies at least 3 items do you get a plop - if it is a 'seed' crop - the plop will contain a packet of seeds.
...piggies will eat food left on the ground - even if there is a feeder with food in it [like most things in glitch, this is random (to me, anyway)]
...as for whether or not some foods are better for them, I know that when I come across a piggie that denies nibblin', you can feed a bunch of grain, and still get denied, or you can feed just 1 meat and be able to nibble

  • A little offtopic, but I feel bad about feeding piggies with meat, that seems so wrong.
"Hey I'm gonna cut 3 pieces of meat from you and let you eat one"

  • piggies aren't /guaranteed/ to eat food that's on the ground. I've seen piggies starve when there was still food around.

  • I've seen piggies eat food off of a table. I had a fire bog house and two piggies in the living room. You can put items on the furniture in that house and I had a few bowls of fruit salad and a couple fancy drinks on the table for guests. I saw one of my piggies walk right up to it and eat it off the table. I thought it would be safe there. Haha, wrong.

  • Today, all my pigs wouldn't let me nibble till I fed them. I was surprised by this, as there were crops on the ground for this purpose as well as five trees they could have eaten from. In the past, I know they've eaten crops I left on the ground because I came home to plops.

  • I noticed this too and was about to file a bug report or at least ask in the forum.  I noticed that at the start of the new day, when I went to pet and nibble they refused to let me nibble.  I happened to be by a tree in my backyard, and after I harvested the tree, the piggy ate from it too and I was then able to nibble.  It seems he waited for me to initiate harvesting of the tree before he too would harvest it.  Weird.
