Hello, I am a newbie, and I just heard about houses

Hello, I am a newbie, and I just started playing today. It has been wonderful. So far, I am harvesting, watering, and petting every tree and doing every option for the animals as well. I've made it through about a dozen streets, and I overheard someone talking about houses for sale (for tons of money- 1000+). I was wondering how I could get the most money, and the best house? Also, are there any "familiars" (pets) in this game like other RPG games? I used to play the kingdom of loathing, (I still do), and someone in chat was talking about this glitch game. So now I am here. Yeah. Also, I am auctioning lips for $45, I just found out how to use that, and I am learning my second skill: Animal something II.
Thanks for any help, I am estarner in-game, if you need help with anything, just reply or find me, I am located on a street really close to the beginning street (or wherever I started off on). Come find me! I'd love to chat!:)
P.S: ABOUT ITEMS: I am pretty pissed about the fact that I can only hold about ten items. This is very frustrating, and I am finding myself having to drop many of my hard-earned items for new ones >< Any thoughts?

  • HI ,Welcome, there's a lot to learn , You might want to read a bit as you play --here's some links to answer some of your questions.

That should get you going. As for making currants, there are really alot of ways you can do that , some a bit more effective or faster in short term than others, but it really depends on what you LIKE to do in game , some people farm and cook , or just cook, or mine, or whatever. theres a strategy group you can join-and their threads in their group usually have lots of good info - www.glitch.com/groups/RIFMO...
    Have fun!

  • my first thought:  go buy a bag or two from a Tool Vendor!
Pull up the streets map and hover over it with your mouse...tooltips will pop up on each street to tell you what kind of vendor and shrine is on the street.  Get thee to the Tool Vendor!

  • I don't have much experience but in my opinion:

Take your time to try out new stuff, there's much to do before buying a house.

There's no pets, closer thing is having animals on your house, which you can pet, nibble, feed etc. just like the ones at the streets.

Skill times increase after 20 or so skills, both AK(the animal skills), and Mining are good, choose your favourite and try to max it for making currants. Take better learning too, ideally you will get better learning 5 as soon as possible but then you'll be unable to get interesting skills the first days.

Buy normal bags(999 currants) or bigger(1999) to get more storage.

  • Thanks! Also, I just picked my third skill: Animal something III (I am being consistent!)
Also, what are ways that YOU guys farm? Preferences? Methods? What works? Doesn't? Thanks!

  • Hey estarner, I'm a KoL player too; there are groups of us!  You can buy containers to increase your inventory space: generic bags and bigger bags from hardware vendors and some more specialized containers for certain types of items. They'll hold up to 16 items, and you can fill your inventory with them to up-to-16tuple your space.  (But you can't put bags within other bags.)

At this point you can get money by selling butterfly milk, grain, or meat (I like to donate the milk to shrines, sell the grain, and eat the meat) to vendors and when you level up.   If you learn a little mining, you can mine rocks -- sparkly rocks are worth the same as butterfly milk but they stay still to be mined.

The cheapest dwellings are 1500, the spendiest 50k right now, and you can put extra stuff in your home instead of toting it around.  You can now even get a mortgage to help buy your home sooner.   Availability of different types of houses varies, look at the realty page to see what's on the market.

  • "Best house" is a relative term, the most expensive doesn't equal best for your needs. Figure out which thing you enjoy, focus on that skill tree, make money from that. This game is more about skill tree and energy use I think, money is a byproduct not a needed goal.

  • Really? JICK SHOULD SEE THIS GAME! Anyways: Where do I get "Your Papers"? I need them to buy a house. Currently, I have 1277 meat right now (is that the currency? or money). I am SO close to getting a house ^_^
Edit: I found a page w/ some houses explained. I really want the large swamp house. For 5000 meat/money. I hope I can get a mortage (I forget how to spell More-gage) on it for 1000 meat/money!
Edit Edit: Medium Swamp House w/ 2 jellisac, peat, 2 barnacles for 5000 meat/money. Does anyone know if there are any (left?)? Thanks! Oh, and I do not fuss much about the amount of mu-lah I have in games. It is not of importance- once can always get more EVENTUALLY. I despise begging, etc. Thanks!

  • I think you'll see a familiar face in the Kingdom of Loathing group; I actually first looked up glitch based on Jick's discussion in the Video Games Hotdog podcast.

Also: wherecanigetpapers.com ; (I'd visit and try to ride the subway without them first because apparently you get a quest to get your papers when you do that, which may give extra rewards.  I don't think I got the quest, so I don't know details.)   I see at least one of those houses for sale.  Keep scanning the realty pages for Kalavana, Shimla Mirch, Jethimadh, and Chakra Phool.

  • I saw a key on the ground just now. I was about to pick it up but someone did it before me. Dangit. What is up with that?

  • You may come across locked doors from time to time. The colors and shape of the locks match keys that spawn out in the world. You can also buy keys from the auction, if you have the cash and don't want to go key hunting.

Meat is food, Currants are money! The amount of currants you have are shown to the left of your inventory.

  • There are doors scattered around Ur (that's the name of the world) that require keys to get into. Usually, the keys are on the same street as the door (sometimes they are a few streets away). They are generally hidden so that only a small portion can be seen (some keys are completely hidden and the only way to find them is to go where they are and hit the enter key). They spawn at regular intervals so if you know where they spawn, you can wait there for a key. Finally, each key has a pattern on the handle that matches the pattern of the lock on a locked door.

  • Before getting too stuck into any particular skill tree (Animal Kinship and Gardening(trees) are good ones to start off gathering stuff with though), don't overlook the 'Better Learning' skill, it'll help speed up learning, or rather, stop learning taking you ages later on.  People told me that, I ignored, and the last BL skill would have taken 22 days or so without speeding it up by donating

Do have a read of the strategy wiki linked to above, will save a bit of wasted effort ;)

This is a link to a Negative Interest First Time Homebuyer Loan program. You seem to meet the criteria, and last I knew, they were having trouble giving money away. Go check it out, they may be able to help you get your first home sooner than you think!

Also, when I log in game, I am going to find you and give you two Bigger Bags (16 slot) that should help with your inventory issues some.

    Good luck!

  • This community is so darn helpful it's amazing.

Anywhere else someone would have told Estamer to just play the game and figure it out. Here, people are tossing useful links and goodies by the handful.

  • Come visit the KoL groups! The one I belong to has a section for tips for new players, including links to the Greasemonkey scripts which may be familiar and comforting for someone coming from KoL. :) www.glitch.com/groups/RHVJD...

  • Glitchen generally like their n00bs. Heck, there's even a quest to hunt down level 3-5 players to give them presents. :)

  • *giggles*  Oh I remember how it felt to think 1000+ currants was so incredibly much.  Now I think nothing of dropping 2k on another large bag.  XD

    Just give it time.  <3

  • Fellow newbie *waves*  I just got my papers to buy a house but they said I need to "complete" them first.  What does that mean?  Any help is much appreciated!

Have you looked at your papers?  Try examining them more closely.
