Topic

Players that no longer exist or haven't played for weeks are taking up homes.

At this point in Glitch, housing is scarce in Alakol and Groddle Meadow. The developers of this game seem to be fighting this problem by adding more and more houses, however, I don't think that this is a sustainable method.

One thing that I think could even be considered a "bug" is the fact that deleted players can still occupy homes. Example: http://www.glitch.com/realty/LA9N79FMVLE2HQC/

Another issue is that players that haven't been online for weeks are still using homes. Obviously, it wouldn't be a good idea to simply kick these people out of their homes if they have been offline. I propose no solution to this problem, however I think it is prominent nonetheless.

  • Let’s have a little faith in the people at TS.  We don’t know that TS lacked foresight.  They may have been thinking about this ‘issue’ since early in development.  They may have planned on having a mechanism in place to address this topic and simply not gotten to it yet due to other unexpected issues requiring their time.  They may have decided that it was best to wait and see how the community reacted before deciding what mechanism to put in place. We don’t own Ur, the servers hosting it, or the staff developing and maintaining it. We are guests in TS’s world, and it behooves us to have a little bit of respect for our hosts.

  • @Syruss: Actually, we know TS has been thinking about this from the beginning. A cursory search of the internet will clearly demonstrate the careful consideration that went into this game. Regarding housing specifically, the intent was to ensure that everyone who wants a house can have one. TS also listens to players, and takes new information and perspectives into consideration when creating new features and policies. I cannot fathom how this could be interpreted in any other way.

There are six stances in this thread:
    1. People who are the Veruca Salts of the internet. "I can't have the house that I want RIGHT THIS INSTANT?! TO THE FORUMS! I DEMAND RECOMPENSE FOR THIS GRAVE INJUSTICE!" These are the people I imagine are always amazed when anything happens, because they think time is static. Demonstrating a fundamental failure to understand what the words "static," and "finite" mean. "Whoa... it's lunchtime AGAIN!? This shit is crazy! I thought it would be 9am FOREVER."

    2. People who think the larger issue is important and should be discussed. RIGHT NOW. This is regardless of the fact that we know major releases are imminent that will directly impact our definition of housing and how housing works in this game.

    3. People who think the larger issue is important and should be discussed. When we have sufficient information and data to discuss it. (this is where I stand)

    4. PEOPLE WHO THINK YOU CAN ROT IN HELL FOR EVEN SUGGESTING REALLOCATING ASSETS IN THE GAME. RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE. DEY TIK ERR JEEEEER (the level of outrage is comparable to the #1 group).

    5. People who post recipes.

    6. Blanky

1 and 4 cancel each other out. 2 and 3 cancel each other out. 5 and 6 are potentially inclusive.

In conclusion, we must now all post recipes and talk about how cool Blanky is.

  • +1 Xev, but I think you forgot something

    7. People who are none of the above but are bored and will participate in the discussion to humor serious posters and provide much-repeated insight.

  • We can all try to bend rules to live on Groddle Isle, OR we can just stop wining and start living in available housing in the other regions. That way every part of Ur will be just as fun in no time.

The only thing that makes te Groddles fun is the (number of) inhabitants!

    2. I think I'd like to try that recipe!

    3. Thank you, Xev.

    4. That is all.

  • really? i can't make one critique about TS without being accused of disrespect and speaking above my so-called station in life? that's hella ridiculous. for some perspective on a true callous attitude try reading rock paper shotgun's review of glitch.

i didn't demand for TS to explain any motives, plans or to provide a solution right at this very moment. i said it would be best to put forth one before housing customization. my reasoning is that house customizing causes another layer of investment and as you can see clearly by the multiple threads about this, people react very aggressively when they believe their possessions, physical or not, have the possibility of being "taken" away or changed for what they believe to be for the worse.

this is why i attributed TS to having a lack of forethought with this issue. if they landed on a firm decision before glitch went live then this entire situation would've been avoided, no butts would be hurt because homeowners would've agreed to whatever terms before purchase. this is not to say this is some dire situation that can't be resolved but that they would've had a bigger range of options without having to worry about severely angering their playerbase. i recognize that developing a mmo is an imprecise art and i'm not claiming to be some expert but i believe it's best to avoid conflict when possible.

to be clear i'm not saying TS is doing terrible, horrific job. i think overall they're doing great, they come across as very accessible and open to input but they're not infallible and in this instance i thought they could've done better. that's it. that's all. even a multi-billion dollar company like google is capable of missteps, look at google wave and google+. if you think that's disrespectful then you've lived a pretty cushy life.

@Xev  i'm curious to how you've come to this conclusion that the physical location and very definition of homes are going to change. yeah group buildings and house customization is coming but i don't see how that indicates anything youre saying. have i missed a staff post?

there really doesn't seem any basis to the accusations of malicious intent. i admit i haven't throughly read all the posts regarding housing but i welcome anyone to show an example of this greed. right now it appears to be a way to villify the opposing side.

i think this entire discussion has been run down to death. i like a good debate but this is more like squishing grapes.

  • Oh my Great Sky-Father- can we let this damn topic die already? Nothing's gonna get solved here, TS is already at work on a solution (which many will no doubt hate, but cross that bridge when you get to it, yeah?), and YES- housing is going to change, i.e., house-BUILDING, house CUSTOMIZATIONS, GROUP HALLS, etc. All you have to do to find out about those is a little homework.
My main interest in this topic revolves around poking holes in silly arguments and witnessing the "vitriolic", as Pink Taco has so ably labelled it. I'm definitely on the side of people who think there should be more data before jumping to conclusions a month and a half in... but mostly I just think people should mind their own damn business, and that definitely includes when your neighbor was last in-game.

  • You are not allowed to criticize Glitch. Glitch is your friend. Glitch is the only one that truly understands.  Glitch is trying to make you happy. Why would you say bad things about Glitch when Glitch only wants what's best for you.
    Do not make Glitch sad.
Or you might make Glitch angry.
    You...don't want to see that.
