time marches on...

in his big update in the grinding, leveling and whimsy thread, stoot mentioned the possibility of an 'X game years old' indicator of how long you've been playing. i think this is an interesting idea, as it would give a good sense of how time passes. this got me thinking on the passage of time in glitch, and some of the ways it might come into play.

will there be seasons? different fruit trees might blossom at different times of year. or maybe weather? during the dead of winter, the cold might hurt as much as being in a wintry place, unless of course you've got your pair of earmuffs or the handwarmer potion you've whipped up.

how about holidays? what holidays would you like to celebrate, and how? I would love a Lem Festival, and maybe the different religions that spring up will have their various holy days and celebrations, some of which will be much more likely to catch on with the public and be commercialized to some extent.

other ideas?

  • i love all this stuff.

it sounds a lot like animal crossing, except that it would be insanely difficult to engage in seasonal events with your friends [friend codes? c'mon.]

i guess there'd need to be seasonal variations for every tree in the game, and maybe ground tiles as well [snow or leaf cover] .. but it would be really, really cool.

  • Yes, I second the motion.

  • I love the idea of holidays and seasons, just like in Animal Crossing--I sort of assumed these might be generated over time by the users but I love that there might be some already built in "global" holidays.

Tingly's "too much like real life" post made me think of this, but I would like to see some crazy, totally not-real-life type seasons.

Like a season where the sky turns several different colors rather than the trees doing so. Or a season where it can rain something that increases mood and also decreases mood, so you have to hop about to avoid the mood-decreasers..or take refuge in your house.

There a couple of times in the year when I seem to be more fired up to learn new things than other times of the year (generally at what used to be start of a semester for me in school), and I always think of those times as my "learning seasons"--what if there was a holiday where certain types of activities yielded higher related points?

  • Ooh - I like 'learning seasons', also the idea of god-holidays or festivals! Imagine if enough people in proximity had an item, there was a spontaneous celebration of that item!

It seems like some of the seasonal characteristics could also be characteristics of different areas on the maps or levels rather than over time.

  • I like the idea of god-holidays. We're paying tribute to Spriggan and Pot, let's have a festival for them! Find out what's behind those tribute cups, exactly...

  • I like these ideas very much. (And of course I'll put in a pitch for celebrating Discardia since it's so comically odd a schedule anyhow you'd think this lot came up with it - solstice & equinox until the following new moon).

    Seasons are pleasing.

Good opportunity to also say how much I'm enjoying the day and month names.
