Piled Higher and Deeper (floor storage)

First off, I'm still exploring the game and learning stuff, so plz be patient if you've heard this tip before.

I have found that when I run out of storage, I can still keep track of all my stuff by piling all of it into one pile against a wall. You may be wondering how I could possibly keep track of anything if everything is in one jumbled up mess. Well, I accidentally discovered that if I press the up arrow while my character is smack up against the wall where the stuff is, a large window opens up and displays everything in an organized manner.

I have been using this method for one day now and it works just fine. When I can't remember if I have something or what quantity I have, I just stand my Glitchen against the wall of junk and press the up arrow.

  • That's a great tip! I used that method a lot, before I eventually made Storage Display Boxes for everything.

  • Back in the old Groddle Meadow days when we only had one small cabinet everything was piled alphabetically through my house in heaps. Then I migrated stuff to alphabetical bigger bags (back when the bags were really big).

I would advise everyone new to the game to invest in some SDB's. Even if just for the very basic handful of resources. Just to actually be able to put my hands on something/know how much of something I have is amazing compared to my old pile system.

  • Good suggestion!  It does work Ann, but be aware that once you get a LOT of stuff on the floor (as everyone had in the days before SDBs), you will get very laggy and loading time will be sooooooo slow when you are at home.  By "lots of stuff" BTW, I mean thousands of stacks, hot hundreds.

Your tip also works when you want to pick up something off a crowded table or shelf and have a hard time selecting just what you want.

  • Before I had SDBs and cabinets everything was in named Bigger Bags and stored in the Attic.  I had about 60 Bigger Bags in the Attic plus Gift Boxes and a few Smaller Bags by the time I was able to make SDBs.  Less lag with it all bagged up.

  • Well, I'll be darned. I've learned a lot of additional stuff with this thread. Thank you, everybody!

One question, tho'. How in the heck can a newbie get a hold of a Storage Display Box (SDB)? They are very expensive if you buy them on auction, can't be created until one has many, many skills, or one must rely on the benevolence of his/her new, high-level friends.

  • I've seen SDBs for around 1k in people's towers, the problem is that you don't know who has them for sale. You can try in the Trading chat channel, or ask in the Marketplace forum section.

You can upgrade to the plain white box or the black box with striped edges for free, don't pay more for one of those than the rickety-looking wooden ones, unless you really really need to save 5 seconds ;)

You only need a few for the things you use the most. My low-level alt has three in her house, but could probably use three more. Even just one is helpful to get some stuff up off the floor though!

  • It doesnt take that long to make the house lag doing the 'piles of crap everywhere method'

ask any old glitch about when we had the old houses

go visit the model houses in Alakol for an idea of just how little room we had (even tho we all were quite content with it) and NO sdbs to use, either.

these new houses start with lag with about 250 sdbs in them, which is why i moved some extra storage to the tower.  cuz a laggy glitch house sucks.

Sell some of your stuff - the stuff that's all piled up - then you can afford a few.

  • Ehm, pile of stuff? It could grow kind of bigger than expected.

  • I sell plain SDBs for 450 in my Tower.  I don't put out many but if you want some at that price check it out.  I replace them after they are purchased.

  • @nekomaki :  Hey, that kinda looks like my place.  Except, I also pile stuff on shelves, and tables and cetera.

I'm starting to get better; I finally got fed up with the lag of my computer trying to render hundreds (if not thousands) of stacks every time I tried to get into my back yard.

  • @Schivnorr That was actually right after the big moving boxes explosion. Now it looks little bit tidier.:))

  • I think everyone gets two SDBs to start with as a new player.  Check your furniture tab.

Each SDB requires 4 boards, 2 metal rods, and 8 snails.  Broken down into basic components, that's 16 planks, 4 units of fuel, 4 plain ingots, and 4 tin ingots (assuming that one rod fed to a sloth may not generate all 8 snails, but sometimes it does, so it'd only take 3 plain and 3 tin ingots).  Each ingot is comprised of 5 pieces of metal ore, and the tin ingots also use 8 green, 8 blue, and 8 red elements each.

If anyone would like to bring me all of the components, either in their basic or finished forms, I'd be happy to manufacture the SDBs for you for no charge.  I'm usually logged in, so just send me an IM.

  • 7 fuel, but many folks (myself included) have machines with a moderate amount of fuel prefilled that are public / tower.

  • I just wondered that too Glum and so asked my friend who just started playing and his starter furniture was a shelf, ceiling light, small cabinet, table, chair, a painting and a room deco.

So it seems that SDB's don't come as starter furniture but should.

As everyone has said above, plenty of people sell SDB's for mega cheap like Brib Annie and Pinkie Pinkston.

  • I don't miss my old piles of junk on the floor, but a significant disadvantage of SDBs is that you can't take stuff out of them by keyboard interaction.  Well, you can, but the "which thing do you want to interact with?" box doesn't tell you which SDB is which, so I always pick the wrong one.  And if you try to drag one to your inventory, it moves the entire SDB, not its contents (and then you get an error because you can't pick up an SDB with stuff in it, and your arrangement of the boxes on the wall is ruined).

  • Ah... that is probably why new players are so confused when others mention SDBs.  It's a shame that they're not given a couple to start with, since they're going to encounter them in other people's towers as they wander around.

And yes, I forgot about the fuel for the metal rods... but since we can still disassemble and reassemble for fuel, no big deal, and my offer stands with or without fuel cells.  (I have almost nothing left to do in the game, and tons of free energy going to waste.)
