Newbie mini-tutorial video (Official)

TS just uploaded a video tutorial showing the basics of the game! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzclVdVBQDQ

I think it's an excellent explanation of key actions for newbies, and very well done - great work staff! :D

Also, I'm curious as to who did the voice over, it's perfect!

  • What is that star thing in the inventory at 0:22? Uber-emblem?
And looks like you can mail more than one type of item at one time...

  • Love the voiceover. Whoever did that should do audiobooks :)
Donating those dolls to shrines was slightly evil lol!

  • I want an Ayn Rand doll.

And who's the narrator?  (New Zealand accent??)
Posted 18 months ago by Tradescantia Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Tradescantia: I'da said more like a British-living-in-america-for-a-while accent. Or Canadian?
Posted 18 months ago by Hburger Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Sounds English to me, but whatever accent it is, it sounds great :D
Posted 18 months ago by Ebil Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I thought British accent too.
Posted 18 months ago by tweetypie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Definitely not kiwi or Canadian, sounds more britishy than anything else to me.

    And yeah, excellent mini-tutorial!

  • Nope - those vowels are NZ or Aussie.  Not Canadian :)  Listen to how she says "Have fun" at the end: it's "hev fun."  That's a classic NZ/Au marker.  British or Cnd would be more like a as in apple.  American would be a longer a.  Americans always (wrongly) use the "ou" sound to distinguish Canadian/American accents, but "a"s and "e"s give you a much clearer difference.  The reason I'm saying kiwi rather than aussie is that she sounds more clipped than a usual aussie.  Maybe Au who's lived in Canada or Britain :)

  • Also... take a look at the developer tools at the top @ 0:47... http://i.imgur.com/0ysfT.png (cool!)

(Trade, I can't hear what you mean. It sounds distinctly 'have' to me.)

  • As a Brit-living-in-Canada-for-a-while, I'm voting for that too.

And yes, perfect voice... she should be the official Voice Of Glitch... cute, personable, friendly, slightly quirky... perfect match.

  • The star thing is the greeter badge, which lets greeters get into start streets to say hi to new players.

Check out the donation of the Ayn Rand doll!  I know some players who'd like one... I bet that shrine hasn't even read The Fountainhead.

  • Thank you, glum!
The irony of donating Ayn Rand dolls kills me.

  • @Trad - My ear heard it as educated Brit living abroad for a while, potentially Indian. The clipped feels learned and not natural, and probably from trying to fit the narrative to the video... in much the same way an airline attendant tells you to fasten your belt and the seat cushion is a flotation device, or the guy running the ride tells you keep your hands and feet inside until things come to a full and complete stop.

    Cool video, thanks for that!

  • Oh gosh Trade... yeah, maybe you're right. I used to hear so many Kiwis & Aussies in West London - it corrupts your sense of what a local accent sounds like.

And it's kinda frightening when you get to the point where you can't reliably identify your own country's accent! I used to be amazed when I'd visit North America and locals would say "are you from South Africa?". I'd think "wow... the accents are poles apart (almost literally)... they don't sound anything alike"... but 7 years in Canada and I'm starting to get confused myself. I think it's down to what you hear around you on a daily basis - it calibrates your sense of "normal"

  • My resident kiwi expert listened and thought it was a NZer who has been living in England for some time.

  • I can't tell the differences between all the non–North American English accents very well...but I love them ALL! Our sound sucks in comparison. :P

On the other hand, I can often tell regional U.S. accents apart fairly well, so it is definitely something of "what you're used to."

  • Super duper luff to the VO.  Part of me thinks it might be Pepper_Rose, but that might just be me being goofy :)

  • Just sounded like an ordinary English voice to me...whether they are living here or Stateside... :) Nice! When I said ordinary of course I didn't mean that - nice RP accent whoever you are!

  • TIL that keyboard shortcut for switching chat/game. Thanks for this!

And definitely a British accent, southern England. Though the rhotic* "r" in "here, are a few tips..." seems more rhotic, perhaps a UK westcountry accent? Or as others above me have suggested, it's an influence from US, Canadian, NZ etc?

*Compare the "posh" UK car (like "caah") and US (maybe NY?) car (like "carrrgh"). If you don't get what I mean, up to about halfway in this video gives a good example.

(I study linguistics, I love talking about accents ;P )

  • Linnaea - I was thinking Pepper because the tutorial seems to fit under the "guide and welcome newbies into the community" sort of theme I think her job seems to include :)
Posted 18 months ago by Leimailu Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm thinking Pepper too.
Are we not being told in case we try to steal her away for speaking work? lol

It's is a really great voice over.
Reminds me of a few weeks back, I was at the doctors and because it's a smallish village I live in, most of us were chatting in the waiting room, when a lady in the corner started reading a book out loud to her daughter and everyone just stopped talking and was listening to her read. She just had the sort of voice where we all wanted to listen too.
Even if she was reading Mr Men books lol!

  • It's funny how some voices are just "Right" somehow...  Reminds me of Stefan Rudnicki reading Colonel Graff in the Enders Game series.  I seriously sat outside of my house listening to that because I didn't want to push stop. :)

  • I'm sure she'll be thrilled that people like her voice (if horrified that people think she sounds like a Kiwi or an Aussie).
Posted 18 months ago by stoot barfield Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Certainly doesn't sound Aussie to me, and I lived down under for over 30 years, sounds more like a Brit accent.
Posted 18 months ago by Teena Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Certainly doesn't sound like a Kiwi or Aussie to me! Wonderful voice-over. I wondered if it was her, since it seemed the sort of thing that would fall under her jurisdiction.

  • SugarQb does the videos (http://kristel-ottis.com/), but I guess that doesn't necessarily mean she does the voice over. Hmm...
