Apparently, the new online insult is....

"You don't read books!"

Just so y'all know and are up on your insults.

I've been told this twice now.....ironically, once because I liked playing a game too much, and once because I didn't like playing a game enough.

So we're alllllll clear on this, I LOVE to read. I'm actually like, a recovering addict. I'm guilty of buying the same book twice because I've read so many that I didn't remember if I had read it before or not. I was on a college reading level in middle school.

So there. Neener neener. I am rubber, you are glue, whatever you say bounces right off of me and sticks right back to you.  :P

  • Nice.

How do I get someone to accuse me of not reading books?  As a librarian, that would be a fun insult to collect.

    However, I'm all about the audio-books :)

  • I recently opened a small bookshop. It must have been a reaction to something that had been boiling up for years after having heard my (ex) mother-in-law tell me to stop reading and do something useful - like watching tv.

  • I love it when people say why do you spend so much time reading or my other favourite playing games.  Then they sit and watch telly for 6 hours - passive - hardly even reacting.

Though to be fair the was a fair bit of reaction to the Game of thrones twist - which was very difficult not to give away

  • Sounds a lot like me when I was growing up, NutMeg! I'd read several books a day and in my reading class in middle school (6th/7th grade), I'd often not hear the bell ring because I'd be so engrossed in my book. >.>  And it was often college level reading as well. It was only having to read so much (mostly boring stuff about subjects that didn't interest me the first year or so) for actual college that dampened my voracity for reading for a long while.

I've picked back up on it, but am trying to moderate myself a bit better now that I'm a few years older. Though I may be going back for another degree in the next few years, and then who knows!

(ETA: So many librarians/library employees, it seems! I also work in a library!)

  • @NutMeg:  I think we all were a little insulted by that post in another forum.  Some people don't realize that a game such as Glitch is a great relief from R/L and some of us really really need it.  Reading a book doesn't always cut it.  It's too easy to get distracted or let your mind wander back to R/L problems.  Some of us can't get out and WALK to the library .. Some of us can't get out unless there's someone to help us, and most of the time they're busy with their R/L.

I also think part of of my obsession with GLITCH is because it's not open 24/7 and therefore I want to make sure that I am available when it is opened.  I think this is what Rascalmom also said in her orginal post.  I'm sure once GLITCH is open 24/7 the desire to rush right in will eventually subside.

  • I have to be careful when reading books. I often get so engrossed that when I look up, I forget where I am for maybe six seconds. Regardless of whether the writing is good or not. AHHHHHHHHH SCULPTED, INCANDESCENT CHEST hey where am I?

I read books a lot, but I haven't read a real one I haven't already read in forever. Most of the books at home I've already read, the local library's cutting hours, and no one has enough time to bring me to Borders and let me get a book. Pretty much all I've been reading have either been on the DS or just on my computer.

  • I remember that I could hardly wait to learn how to read when I was a kid. Reading is one of my favourite pastimes. However circumstances in my life have made it very difficult to concentrate and my thoughts were left to wander to places that I needed to get away from.

Computer games really help with that. I can escape my thoughts for awhile, and to me that does me a world of good.

  • I think it is VERY obvious that this thread is targeting a member & their post on another thread in this forum, however, since I cant prove that 100%, I'll just reference Qizara's post & say how utterly inappropriate it is to even post this thread. It has nothing to do with Glitch, and it has the possibility of being seen by the user who posted in said other thread.

I dont see why so many of you talk about freedom of ideas, rainbow farting hippies, & community guidelines when as soon as someone posts something you dont like its a witch hunt of catty back & fourth.

The user said multiple times they meant no offense to anyone & even apologized while still holding their position.

All this is doing is proving them right, and I'm disappointed that this is even still alive or that I am feeding it -- I will end with saying that this is definitely NOT the community I see when we are actually playing the game, and I think some of you should really step back & look at your actions & perhaps re-evalute your stances on what is & is not appropriate (and if deemed appropriate, then what is & is not GOOD & KIND) before you post.

Posted 17 months ago by WarmSpirit Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Hah, I also tend to forget where I am for several seconds after looking up from a book. Most of the books on my shelves have been read and reread as well. I don't have much room to store new books though.

I need to get my library card for the local public library and go check out books- or see what books I can check out here where I work, though it's mostly research stuff. I think there's some more frivolous reading about though. (Shameful note: Almost all of my local friends are librarians at the public library system in this region, and I am always going out to support programs, but I still haven't gotten a card there!)

Maybe I'll save up some money and get a Nook or something (except that I'm saving up almost every extra penny I get for a trip to England next year). My mum just got one, and it seems really nice.

  • @Taylor Swift: The OP mentions that they saw the "insult" in a couple of different places which is why they started the thread- some coincidences that they took note of and wanted to post a thread about. The only post in this thread that is directed at that one in a truly negative manner (at least that I can recall from reading through this one) is the one you mention specifically and perhaps a little too obviously so.

Everyone else is just talking about reading in general. Just relax and discuss reading habits and books and ignore the one post if you feel it inappropriate. That's what I'm doing.

ETA: Oh, and scanning back through: @zira: That sounds awful about the (ex)mother-in-law. But awesome that you opened a bookstore. I've thought of that before. I think it'd be nice.

  • Um, Taylor, since it's obvious you don't like the things I say (Ever.), don't read my posts. What Qizara said was actually in support of me, so I'm not sure what your point was.

I'm not picking on "one person in particular". I was noting that the times I've had people try to degrade me on here, it's been that I obviously don't read.  Maybe you didn't fully read my post before jumping onto a witch hunt of your own.
Posted 17 months ago by NutMeg Botwin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Little Miss Giggles, actually the OP said its happened twice, in 2 different games.I also said ignoring OP's post, that someone posted directly at a user. Yes you know, it would be much easier to sit back and not say anything, but if the person that this post is about reads this, they will feel horrible, even though they obviously meant no harm. I'm not going to just let someone take heat for voicing their opinion.

  • @Liridona - Does your local library have an 'outreach' program?   I know we make special runs to peoples homes who are not mobile enough to get to the library for whatever reason.   I often see our outreach librarians filling crates of books for people saying things "well, she liked that book, so I'll throw a couple of these types in there...."

    Just an idea -

  • No, "Taylor" I said it happened twice...both on here. I just found it ironic, because it couldn't be further from the truth.

Please go ahead and block me if you're going to continue to find fault with everything I say and do. I'm not trying to make anyone feel bad. (Although I didn't see this supposed apology you're talking about from one person.)

...Maybe my reading comprehension is fail but I don't see the part where you said that the subject of this thread will feel horrible, regardless of the OP's post or not. And then there's the whole "posting this thread is utterly inappropriate" thing in the first paragraph.

    @Linnaea Borealis
My local library doesn't have anything like that. They're struggling to keep open as it is.

But on the other hand, all the stores are being given taxpayer dollars to redo their facades because we have a new Target.

  • @Nutmeg, I dont dislike everything you post, we just see things differently. ALbeit I'm sure we're both very opinionated people -- everything is a joke to me until people's feelings are on the line & Im sure you know that if a certain glitchen reads this they will feel attacked. I go to my college because I received a scholarship from the Leadership Institute. Before I tested for Glitch I was on a week long retreat for the institute dedicated to the qualities of an integrative person & since I don't feel right just sitting back when I feel there is an injustice. I don't think you are a bad person, nor do I dislike you or your posts, but I wish there was more thought about people in the things you say/do. I entirely plan to talk to you in game, and I'm sure that our personalities will find a snug fit together & we will understand one another much more than forum posting will allow.

@Liridona, maybe my comprehension is fail but I dont see why I need to be so specific on common knowledge details, if you posted in a thread & said something you didn't mean to be offensive, and then 'mysteriously' another thread opens up with the discussion of mocking what you said, would you not feel attacked at all? I also called my own post inappropriate but unfortunately I believe a bad reputation is better than a bad conscience, and we're all entitled to our own opinion of that.

  • Also sorry @ my lack of knowledge about  forum terms. Forum = the entirity of everthing when you click "Forums" - Thread = A topic in the Forums - Post= someones comment on a thread.

  • The places I've been to (certain imageboards included) have those definitions, but "thread" could also refer to just the OP's post. But not like I can expect everyone to come from the same places I have, right? Even if that were true I can't expect everyone to have read and posted in exactly the same threads as I have.

I don't think Nutmeg or most people here intended any malice towards "that one guy's post", just that it was interesting that it was implied Nutmeg didn't read books on two separate occasions here but for two entirely different reasons.
Posted 17 months ago by Liridona Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Taylor Swift:

As I said, "a couple of different places". Couple= two. Different places= different games/threads/wherever. I did not misrepresent what the OP said, so I'm not sure why you're correcting me? It may be phrased slightly different, but it carries the same implication.

The conversation sparked by the OP is by and large a good conversation. Perhaps someone may feel bad if they feel that the OP is directed at them solely, but we can't assume that they do without consulting them, and I don't believe the OP was intended that way. I also believe that most (note: most, not all) can probably hold their own if they feel they must. There's only one post I see in this thread that does seem intended that way, and I never said I felt it was appropriate. Nor do I feel that speaking for someone is proper, and I would hate for someone to speak for me without consulting my feelings on the matter. I just passed over it for the sake of peace, as it is not worth drawing out something negative in a generally positive thread.

Drawing it out just makes it worse and gets more people involved that shouldn't be (as I am beginning to feel now). Ignoring it generally nips it in the bud, so long as others don't compound it by responding just as negatively. I prefer my threads argument/negativity-free (vestiges of managing gaming forums for years), though I would not say discussion free, because discussing all sides of issues calmly is often a good thing, whether people agree with each other or not.

I understand your point about being considerate when posting and completely agree with it, and I did cringe a little on the behalf of someone at one point. But that doesn't mean I will transfer how I would feel in the situation onto them, unless it is someone I know well enough to know they'd feel the same.

Anyway, that is my perspective on it. I don't believe it's right or wrong. It's just a perspective from what I've observed over time.
Posted 17 months ago by Little Miss Giggles Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Taylor:  is it better to be very apparent when you are attacking someone for what they said?  You claimed that this post is attacking someone else, yet you are on THIS thread attacking the OP.  Not much of a difference in my opinion.  You literally called someone out by name, and in doing so performed an act of hipocracy.

EDIT: and this thread was started because someone was feeling attacked.  people will always be feeling attacked, but I don't think its anyones job to make sure that one person is not offending another, shouldn't people do that for themselves?
Posted 17 months ago by Laurali Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Laurali: Most of what I said was directed openly (to all public). Let me preface by saying that the someone's post mentioned by Qizara had no mal-intent, and it could be well reasonably argued they were attacked for it. In my own mind, there is a difference between an open argument, in which I am inciting - I have well taken consideration in everything that anyone has posted to me & I directed the OP to defend herself. 'Someone' else is not being given these same luxuries.

Hypocrisy is a strong & complicated word that probably shouldnt be thrown around so often, for I was never attacking calling someone out - I highly appreciate when people call others out - I was attacking the morality of what has been posted here. (As you'll notice I only used a name to reference what I was referring to with what I said)
Posted 17 months ago by Taylor Swift Subscriber! | Permalink
  • But you called Qizara out by name, and said "I dont see why so many of you talk about freedom of ideas, rainbow farting hippies, & community guidelines when as soon as someone posts something you dont like its a witch hunt of catty back & fourth."

How is that not an attact?  Just people you are open about your attack does not mean that it did not hurt Qizaras feelings.  And as you said earlier, "everything is a joke to me until people's feelings are on the line"
Posted 17 months ago by Laurali Subscriber! | Permalink
  • And "someone" else can defend themselves if they wanted to, this forum is open to everyone to say what they think/feel.
Posted 17 months ago by Laurali Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Qizara referenced a user, & put a head on this post. I feel like you're using the straw man fallacy here. As you'll see, I never called Qizara a bad person, etc.. actually I havent done any name calling. As far as the quote you took from my post -- that was not said with any user as an example - open public & you can see it in every controversial thread in this forum.

I never said I wasnt attacking anyone, but as far as hypocrisy goes, I think you should re-read.

And since you might bring it to attention I said 'I was never attacking calling someone out" I didnt mean "attacking OR calling someone out" as in, if you want to call someone out, do it, but dont do it utterly inappropriately. Though I am disappointed in this thread, it was only after reading Qizara's comment that I posted. Also, I hardly would see quoting her to be calling her out as it is, If I had hyperlinked what she had said would you be happier?
Posted 17 months ago by Taylor Swift Subscriber! | Permalink
  • "And "someone" else can defend themselves if they wanted to, this forum is open to everyone to say what they think/feel."

    preaching hypocrisy?

And with that said, I don't know why you're even posting because obviously the right thing to do is just let everyone fend for themselves. I dont need to try to justify anything I have said here as being just, fair, or right, because between me and my beliefs, they are. I have no ill will towards any of you, but I'm way too hardheaded & passionate about this. I'm going to quit responding so you can have the last word, but that doesnt mean I'm wrong.
