Idea: Experimental Cooking Skills

Think of this as a rough draft for an idea that could then go down into the proper forum.

Idea: MC3 and the fancy frypan

Have you ever been thinking of making something, say an omlet, looked in the fridge, and noticed that you just also happen to have mushrooms? So instead of a basic omlet with 3 eggs and cheese, you dice up 2 mushrooms in butterfly butter to fry them, and then add them too?

Why not an additional catagory of cooking where you have wildcard slots, some of them can only take one item, others can take anything. If glitch had chocolate, "X dipped in chocolate" would be one of the largest wildcards you could cook.

The end of any one of these wildcard recipies would be when you used all possible variations of it... say, made all 15 possible basic omlet variations, you would then unlock a better omlet.

  • Well, experimentation is part of the Test Tube. Seems along the same lines. It needs to be in the "Ideas" forum, but the trial balloon stuff is really all that far off. Actually I wish there was something like this with all the cooking items.

  • I like this idea a lot.  Cooking sort of demands this kind of on the fly stategery anyway, and I love the idea of crazy cooked up combinations.

    +1!

and plz move to Ideas thread.

  • Moved! Excited to see where you guys go with this, keep on brainstorming.

Really like this one! But I would say "experimental food" should use more ingredients and give less energy, since it's different from the actual recipe.

  • Icount, would you edit the title so people can see what the idea is?  At the moment, it's pretty meaningless.

  • I like the idea of creating new recipes, but would this be up to the users or the Devs?  Would it be like alchemy, where you have to guess the mixtures that already exist?  This would probably be over pretty fast, unless the list of ingredients keeps expanding, because folks would just trade known recipes.

If the users can mix anything with anything are there any limits at all?  If a user creates something "worthy" does it get added to the official list of recipes or give tons of extra favor from Pot?  If someone creates something foul (as much as I like chocolate, I think an omelet dipped in chocolate would qualify) does it give negative energy or mood, or is taste in the eye of the beholder (to mix a metaphor along with my ingredients)?  If you mix every possible 2 and 3 combo of ingredients, and eat it, do you get a trophy, or just die of indigestion?

More questions than answers, but there's a lot of directions this idea could take off in.

  • I know the harvest moon games have a similar system were you have a core recipe, but you can add other things to it that may make it better or worse. Would be nice just as a way for food to give you more energy.

  • I like the idea that within the recipes you do have a wild card slot called something like "Extra Ingredient". So you could have any dish being made with an extra ingredient. This extra ingredient could add or subtract mood/XP depending on the perceived outcome of the dish. For instance with the omelet idea mentioned above: You start with the basic recipe but add a vegetable like spinach or broccoli. Well that would be okay since there exists that in the real world (yes I realize we all have individual tastes and some don't care for these but anyway). So that "extra" gives you a +5 or so mood/XP. However, if you made an omelet with say strawberries that would be -5 because that wouldn't turn out to be as good. It is very similar to the test tube function and I think it could work and be fun.

  • Gosh, Holly, you've clearly never had a strawberry omelet.  It's actually pretty good.

  • Would love to have more creative cooking, blending, shaking options!  Great idea!  Also would love to have more recipes in general.

Would like to see more options for everything to include alchemy, etc.

  • Just an example Windborn. But no I've not ever had a strawberry omelet. I would think warm strawberries would not be good. Then again, strawberry syrup over French Toast is quite good. Hmm, parsnip omelet for not so good choice then?

  • Experimentation and creation is a growing part of this game and I applaud the suggestion.

    Expanding on it:

    Messes:
Just as in real life (or testing with a test tube), experimenting makes a mess. As such, when ones fails during an experiment (like with test tubes) you get a message: "Oops! You made a mess! You lose 3 item1, 4 item2, 1 item3, gain +2 mood and lost -5 energy in the process"

    New Recipe:
Upon making something that does jive, you receive a pop-up saying "You've created a new item! You lose X-# of items, gain +2 mood, lose -10 energy and +37XP. Would you like to save this recipe?" If you say yes, you get to name it and the "saved" recipe is placed into a "Custom Recipes" list within said Frying Pan, Awesome Pot, etc. recipe list.

    Sharing Recipe:
If you make something new, it doesn't mean someone else hasn't made it too. As such, I suggest that the recipe name be specific to each Glitch. Otherwise, people will be bummed to realize someone else has "been there, done that" before them and that may dishearten them from experimenting further on their own. However, it make be useful to have a "transcribe custom recipes to note" option (assuming PenPapership is known) where people can print their recipes to a note and share their experiences (trade secrets like Grandma used to do) with others in game, furthering the search for that perfect formula for them.

  • I think we have plenty of groceries and sauce available that could be add on simple recipes like waffles, sammichs, tortillas, frybread, pancake, fried eggs and noodles
    great idea ICountFrom0!

  • Well... I actually brought up a long time ago about sauces.

Sauces should be usable on anything. I want Catsup on everything I eat, for example.

  • How about combining items together to make "meals" for those of us who have to eat an entire stack of food to reach max energy (honestly, carrying around tons of stacks of food is getting annoying).

For example you could combine a Hearty Omelet, Gramma's Pancakes, Coffee (or Juice), and a Banana to create a "Hearty Breakfast" that gives 1.5 times the energy included in each individual item.

    Other Ideas:
Light Lunch: A Sammich, Pickle, and Milk.
Fancy Dinner: A Cedar-Plank Salmon, Spinach Salad, Oaty Cake, and a Cosma-Politan (great for e-dates!).
Power Thirst: Mega-Healthy Veggie Juice, Savory Smoothie, and Crabato Juice (Run as fast as Kenyans!)

  • +1 Skwid!

    Meals could stack too, though?
*imagines stacks of covered meal plates or frozen dinner boxes*

I do like the idea of being able to make new stuff. It would require that the devs make some sort of new table outlining the add-in energy value of each item and perhaps some limitations on how they can be combined, as I'd imagine the energy would be different than the 'norm' or we'd all just be making Voltron Stew.
*now imagines multiple stoots combined to form Voltron*

  • True story:  I once served a roomful of my hungover friends chocolate and jelly omelets.  Stranger than fiction, they said they were surprisingly good and finished them. o_O;

I like this meals idea, but care should be taken to make these meals more expensive (whether in terms of street price or market price, not sure) than their equivalent in smaller meals.  The more powerful charas do still have to pay for convenience.

Regardless, this is such a cool idea because it gives the devs a way to make at least a dozen new items without inventing a lot of new stuff.  It also focuses on expanding the utility of food into the higher levels -- which is important because otherwise, creating more recipes is just creating a lot of clutter.  We all know it will be fun for a while to mess with honey-dipped everythings or being able to use sauces more flexibly, but if all they do is give 149 energy instead of 147 then it's kind of a mess to learn and to balance.

One thing I'd like to see more of is items which augment other abilities.  What if you need to take purple to make an Insane Musicblock, or eat a certain combination of foods to get a Blessed by Cosma buff, or perhaps you could synthesize basic foods with alchemy?  Sorry to get off-track (I always do that).

  • i am pretty sure that this kind of food should give extra mood bonuses, but only with a hangover, and maybe even only be edible in this state...

  • Add a Deep-Frier to the game and there would be a menagerie of things people would end up trying out lol.

  • Givin the propensity in real life for people to convert everything including meat to something vegetarian I could definitely see alternative Glitch recipes taking this route. e.g. an Omelet made with beans instead of eggs. I like the idead. It doesn't even have to be "experimental" persay in that there's more than one way to make an omelet. (That's a quote by someone right?) haha

  • I love the ideas that are presented here, but I wonder how they could be accomplished without custom art. You certainly could do that in layers, but that will take a lot of testing to make sure that they all look right. It certainly isn't impossible, but very difficult. Is there another way to do it that I am missing? Also, as a note to the OP, would you mind changing the title of this post to something that is related to the proposed change, maybe something on the lines of "Master Cheffery 3 for making custom recipes." It will get more views that way.

  • "If you mix every possible 2 and 3 combo of ingredients, and eat it, do you get a trophy, or just die of indigestion?"    LOL!

    +1 Mereret and special +1 c0mad0r.

It's true that more than one person could come up with the same combo as many others, no matter how unusual the ingredients. But what if the player were the wildcard?  In other words, combining these various ingredients unlocks a pre-set quantity of xp, mood, energy etc...but what if once in a while, purely randomly, the same combination unlocked mad awesome amounts of those things.  Then the player could save that item as, say Flirty's Freakalicious Fritter and actually sell it at a higher value because of its amazing curative powers.  In that case, the secret ingredient is Flirty him/herself.

  • PS:  PLEASE  change the title. I keep skipping over this, then looking and thinking, "oh yeah THIS one, this is good stuff."

  • Hey... i am the sexret ingredient!? Omgz! Awesome ideas. One thing that would be pretty neat to twist in would be if every Glitch randomly had a favorite food or drink, which gave them extra bonuses to mood and maybe energy - random for game balance purposes - altho we could also have it based on favorite recipes before level 10 or something, i dunno, sounds difficult now that i type it.

  • Well, frankly, I had half an idea and was asking for the general public set of people to have a look at it and see if it could be fixed before it was sent here to the sharks to sink ... and bomb.

It's not quite a wildcard slot, as per harvest moon, as there are a limited number of possible things that would work in the slot that would be listed, on the wiki, or in the game with a "???" but internally there would have to be a list of possible things to put in the waffles, or in the mexican rice, or in the omlelet. Some recipes might have only 3 variation, blueberry, strawberry, and orange bubble tea? If you made all three unlock "rainbow bubble tea". That's the essance of the idea.

Five kinds of omlets possible, all listed as omlete + with the"???" in it. The last block is open, and you drag the item you want to try into it, and then let it cook. If you find one that works, it shows up on the bottom of the card, you could click it and make that one without the drag and drop. If you find, and MAKE all 5 it unlocks a better omelet.

For balance keep the 5 subtypes of omlet, the 3 subtypes of bubble tea as counting as multiple recipies.

Also this dovetails to the idea of "fancy" as something you could do to existing tools by high levl tinkering, and combine that with the idea of extra durability in crafted tools, by making the experimenatal cooking have a higher chance of breaking the cooking tool.

Lets face it, you get cooking wrong, you might break your awsome pot.
