rube ringtone~~ <3

I'm so excited I can get a Glitch ringtone!

Except I have no idea how to get it onto my feature phone. The download link results in an error when I navigate to the site on the phone. Can only fancy smartphones have it? I have unlimited data, so I don't mind if there's an extra step or something I need to do?

  • I got me a rube ringtone and LOVE it! I had to convert the file supplied buy TS using instructions I found on the internets. Just google your phone brand and "ringtone conversion" and you should find instructions on how to convert it. Took me less than 3 minutes after I found the instructions. I have an iPhone, so my instructions probably won't be the same as yours. I am not a techie at all and it was easy even for me.

  • Hi Faranae - the original blog post with some more info is here: http://www.glitch.com/blog/2010/11/18/rube-ringtone/. Hope that helps!

Also, note that on the blog post and the downloads page there are two download links: one for the ringtone in M4R format, and one as an MP3.  I think you want the M4R.  Good luck!

  • If you have a non-smartphone, most phones in the past 5 years allow you to use an MP3 for the ringtone, although with some restrictions, as in they might cut it off after a certain time, or require it to be a specific length/file size. Older phones usually require a WAV file. That said, it's is extremely easy to convert nearly any audio file into a ringtone. What I've used for years is a free utility called Audacity. Despite being free, it gives you a ton of editing power, like being able to grab just that "sweet spot" of the song you want to use as a ringtone. Built in to the standard version of the software is the ability to save as MP3 or WAV, as well as compression size (how big the file will be vs the audio quality) and also the ability to speed the music up.

As an example, my last phone, a well-loved Razr I had for 6 years before replacing it and joining the smartphone zombie clan, had a restriction of WAV files that lasted no more than 20s in length, encoded at less than 256 bit and file size no more than 600 or so kb (I might be off slightly in these numbers). Using Audacity, I could chop the specific parts from songs i liked and make a ringtone, or take a longer piece and speed it up, like I did for the custom ringtone I used for my sister, where I took a 30s piece and sped it up to fit the criteria.

In today's smartphone age, I'm sure that most phones can simply take your MP3 and accept it as a ringtone. Mine seems willing to accept almost anything, and I have custom ringtones for everyone on my contact list, plus custom ones that I've done for messaging and unknown callers (currently "On the Frances Mountains", more commonly known as the mountain climber song from Price is Right). In the event you cannot get the audio file from the download link to try, I'd recommend giving Audacity a crack at it.

  • Right. What I meant to say was:

I had a little trouble getting the file saved to my phone instead of just streaming from the link, but once I managed that I was able to select the mp3 as my ringtone. (HTC Incredible, Android)  I love it, thanks TS!!

  • I have loved the Rube ringtone for ages, but last night I was woken out of a deep sleep by a wrong number and spent a long time looking around the room, thinking "The Rube's here. Where is he?" Still love it, though :)

  • Kukubee: yeeeeeeeeeeeeees, tadpoles. now when are you adding those to the game?

Also, I got it working! I didn't end needing audacity after all, but it *was* still a kind of wonky thing I had to do, so I'd like to share with everyone. Also, I'm sure I could just put the file in Audicity and convert it there. I suspect my phone *must* have some other ringtone format than video, so I'll be experimenting on my own.

If you have a phone, like the Rumor Touch, that can use .3g2 format (which is actually video...) for ringtones, download the mp3 file to a computer, then change the extension to .3g2. You may need to go into your folder options settings so you can get at extensions. Next, find a way to put that file onto your phone's memory card (I have an SD reader with miniSD adapter). Put it into the DCMI folder on there, in the same sub folder as you'll find your phones photos.

Now you can, when choosing ringtones, select the song from the "My videos" option. Voila!

(Also, these youtube links were very helpful: www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMX... and www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeN... )

  • on my android phone i had to install a file manager app - create a folder named ringtones then on my computer, make sure the downloaded rube  ringtone was transferred into that folder and sync up my phone.

no other way of getting it to work for me so a bit of a palaver but got there in the end

  • I have now found a more better way of getting these things on here! MWAHAHAHAHAHA!

So, you may or may not know you can send e-mails as texts via SMS gateways. There's a list of those addresses per carrier on wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_...). You use your carrier's gateway address for MMS or rich text, with the recipient being full phone number without distance extension (i.e. 1) and no punctuation and the domain of the recipient being the gateway address. So: 1234567890@evil.entity.com

You rename an mp3 as qcp (that's a format for message tones), and attach it to an e-mail sent to that kind of address. Click on the attachment when you receive the text, and set it as a ringer (do not save). It's now permanently lodged in your mysteriously unfindable ringtone folder, and you no longer lose the photo of your contacts.

Of course, this will use up data on your plan, so use with caution!
