RUBE trade offers: **RESULTS**

Results of Rube trade offers are as follows. Original post is below that. Prices are based on the encyclopedia worth of each item. See the individual results in the replies to this thread if you're interested in what sort of items were traded, and want to evaluate them based on other types of worth (personal or auction prices).

Results compiled from 235 Rube trade offers (from 47 separate Rube encounters), with normal, mixed inventories (cheap and expensive items):

16% of Rube's offers were worth less than what he wanted in return (a loss for the player).
Average gain the player would have gotten from all trades including ones that would have been a loss: 200 currants.
Average gain the player would have gotten from all trades NOT including ones that would have been a loss: 251 currants.
Gain of most profitable trade offer in this study: 3350 currants

++++++++++++++++
Effects of special inventories: It is clear that eliminating cheap items from your inventory and only carrying expensive ones results in many more bad trades from the Rube, greatly increasing your chances of a loss.

Results compiled from 20 Rube trade offers (from 4 separate Rube encounters), with an inventory only including 0 through 2 stacks of items worth under 100 currants, and everything else worth over 100 currants: (keep in mind that this is not based on very many trades, so the results are much more uncertain than those listed above for normal inventories)

55% of Rube's offers were worth less than what he wanted in return (a loss for the player).
Average gain the player would have gotten from all trades including ones that would have been a loss: 156 currants.
Average gain the player would have gotten from all trades NOT including ones that would have been a loss: 428 currants.
Gain of most profitable trade offer in this study: 2300 currants

Original post:

So, the Rube has taken night classes... and now there have been some anecdotal stories of a "stingy" Rube, or even one that's acting like a down right con-artist, "tricking" people into trading expensive items for something worthless. I propose that we band together to take some real data, for the sake of our fellow Glitches who can use it to evaluate how much time they want to spend with the Rube, and (more importantly) for the sake of the Rube: Tiny Speck can still tweak his personality, and this information will help them learn if they should at all, and what they might do to make him better.

If you would like to participate, here are the rules: (Changed slightly from the original)

1) It's best to wait until the 5th offer before accepting so we can see what all the trade offers would have been, but if you get something totally awesome go ahead and accept the offer, then post the results here (including all previous offers).

2) Write down what the Rube offered to give you, and what he wanted in return for each offer (including the order it was offered in).

3) Take note of anything that might be of interest about the content of your inventory, so we can gauge if that has any effect on the results.

**EDITED to add** : If you get a doll, throw all these rules out the window and let us know what you traded it for.... I don't know of anyone who has publicly stated what they gave the Rube in exchange for a doll since the Rube took his night classes.

Then, just post what you find here. Multiple posts from the same person about different Rube trades are greatly encouraged.

The Rube thanks you!!

  • Here's the trade I just had. I've included the number of currants each item is worth as given in the info page on that item (found in the encyclopedia). I was carrying a normal inventory with a mixture of items in it. No effort was made to carry extra expensive items, but I do have a full set of tools (including the expensive ones).

    super veggie kebab for a meat (58 c for 10 c)
    bubble tree bean for a crabato juice (150 c for 50 c)
    scraper for a meat (300 c for 10 c)
gurly drink for an awesome pot (160 c for 300 c)
meat collector for an awesome stew (500 c for 200 c)

    Conclusions:
--1 offer was for something worth less than the item the Rube wanted for it.
--The average "good" offer (not a loss for me) would give me a gain of 184.5 currants.
--The best offer was the last one, which gave me a gain of 300 currants.

.... An essence of  rubeweed is "worth" 307 c according to the info page, and is currently selling for a minimum of 830 c on auction.

  • Thanks for starting this topic!  My last two encounters with the Rube were disappointing at best, and I was considering whether to ask in the forum about others's recent experiences.

I didn't write down the trades offered in my recent Rube encounters, but I will going forward... Do you want to know if Rube essence was used?
Posted 11 months ago by LynnieR Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The price of rubeweed is dropping dramatically. I sold my rubeweed essence for 4000 currants a few weeks ago, I now struggle to sell one for 800 currants. Soon it will be even less.
Posted 11 months ago by Anderella Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think he's getting smarter.  Soon he will offer you a bean for that worthless Wittenstine doll.

  • @LynnieR: I don't think it matters if Rubeweed essence is used, but I could be wrong. Feel free to include that info if you want to. I did use the essence for my experience above.

  • The Rube found me in ancestral lands today (no rubeweed), having a mix of low and high value items in my inventory.  In the name of science, I let him make all 5 offers to me; some of them I would have accepted.

    1. tinkertool (500 currants) for a tangy sauce (67 c)
    2. smelter (700 c) for a creamy martini (60 c)
    3. scraper (300 c) for a camphor (20 c)
    4. beaker (400 c) for a cloud 11 smoothie (69 c)
    5. plain crystal (300 c) for a hatchet (100 c)

    ETA:
-- all offers were worth more than the thing the Rube wanted in return
-- average gain for all offers:  376.8 c
    -- gain of best offer:  640 c
(And knowing the value of a smelter, I would have taken that offer and ended the trade there if I were not doing the experiment.)

  • New game day, so I called the Rube with essence again. I believe it was the exact same inventory as before (mix of items).

    super veggie kebab for a meat (58 c for 10 c)
    test tube for a frying pan (100 c for 125 c)
    too berry shake for a hooch (76 c for 15 c)
    irrigator 9000 for a frying pan (750 c for 125 c)
    tasty pasta for a crabato juice (134 c for 50 c)

-- 1 offer was worth less than the thing the Rube wanted in return (BE CAREFUL!!!)
-- average gain for all offers not counting the one that would have been a loss: 204.5 c
    -- gain of best offer: 625 c

I would have accepted the 4th offer if I wasn't doing this experiment (gain of 625 c). I was saving my crabato juice for a crab, so declined the final offer (actual gain/loss = 0 c).

I'll compile some overall statistics after we have more data from different people.

  • Another Rube meeting without essence or rubeweed, another 5 trades refused.

    1. cloudberry daiquiri for a sprig of rubeweed (142 c for 55 c)
    2. super veggie kebab for an applejack (58 c for 25 c)
    3. onion sauce for an eggy scramble (56 c for 25 c)
    4. tangy sauce for a knife and board (67 c for 75 c)
    5. Ix-style braised meat for a sprig of rubeweed (162 c for 55 c)

-- 1 offer was worth less than the thing the Rube wanted in return
-- average gain for all offers not counting the one that would have been a loss: 64.5 c
    -- gain of best offer: 107 c

(Crummy set of offers this time...)

  • Perhaps starting a group for this would be better? And making a thread in General when you have a pretty good conclusion overall?

Good luck on your research Rube wuvers. :)

  • I think we'll reach more people in general, Palindrone. I have no desire to start a group just to temporarily collect information about the results of an in-game action, and I'm sure very few people are interested in joining such a group. Feel free not to read this thread if it bores you.

  • 1. Banana No-Name for Butterfly Butter (32c for 6c) (26c increase)
    2. Gas Plant Bean for Secret Sauce (150c for 28c) (122c increase)
    3. Abbasid Ribs for Saucepan (88c for 200c) (112c DECREASE)
    4. Simple BBQ for Watering Can (86c for 75c) (11c increase)
    5. Cold Taco for Purple Flower (53c for 12c) (41c increase)

Essence *was* used. Mixed inventory, including high-value tools and items.

-- 1 offer was worth less than the thing the Rube wanted in return
-- average gain for all offers not counting the one that would have been a loss: 50c
-- gain of best offer: 122c

  • I tend to not trade unless he's offering something I want, and not requesting something I use a lot. He almost always offers me 12-sided dies, which I no longer want. I don't really care about the hard numbers, just whether *I* want it. It makes it hard on the Rube as I don't want anything much, however meeting him is always a thrill.
Posted 11 months ago by Osprey Subscriber! | Permalink
  • This might be the last one with a normal, mixed inventory: I may try to tweak it after this. I used rubeweed essence:

    carrot margarita for blender (90 c for 150 c) = 60 c DECREASE
    spice mill for plain metal ingot (150 c for 30 c) = 120 c increase
    whortleberry jelly for frying pan (75 c for 125 c) = 50 c DECREASE
grade AAA earth block for sprig of rubeweed (210 c for 55 c) = 155 increase
    piggy egg for rich tagine (300 c for 101 c) = 199 increase

--2 offers were worth less than the thing the Rube wanted in return
--average gain not counted losses: 158 c
--gain for best offer: 199 c

The results so far are looking rather depressing, although we don't have much data in yet so it remains to be seen. Looks to be a waste of money to buy rubeweed essence so far, but we won't know for sure until we have better statistics. So far no one has gotten a really stellar trade offer, and there is a fairly good chance of a bad trade (getting a cheap item for a more expensive item).

As Osprey pointed out, these numbers are meaningless if the item has some extra value attached to it (personal or added worth through auction trading). This is the only way to look at the overall results objectively and consistently, but individual results may vary :).

  • It was really crappy for a good few days up till midweek, just seeds for chunks of sparkly or slightly better tools for middle of the road ones like Orb for pickaxe - barely a 200 profit and I was refusing the stack unless the last throw was vaguely worthwhile. The last couple of days though I've generally accepted the middle offers since it got up to two Cauldrons and a Cubanimal box so it may well have been tweaked back up ton on-insulting offers.

  • Awesome Stew for sprig of rube weed
    Ix-style braised meat for helium
    Gurly drink for crabato juice
Fruit changing machine for cocktail shaker
    Irrigator 9000 for silvertongue

This was a random visit (not using a potion). It was the 2nd time I saw the rube today. The first time I rejected all of his offers because they were not worth it.

  • @litlc: I'll talk to you next time I see you in game. I can post it for you if needed.

@Franthrax: The Rube rules have changed since then, so the old data wouldn't be helpful except as a comparison... which would be interesting in and of itself. So if you would like to include it, that would be cool--just make it obvious at the beginning of the post that it's old data and won't correlate to the new data.

  • Possibly interesting results on this one:

I tried to make my inventory different this time: I tried to drop all items worth less than 100 c, but realized after the first Rube offer that I forgot to drop 21 plain metal ingots (worth less than 100 c). So, this inventory is all items worth more than 100 c, plus 21 metal ingots (Rube essence used):

    too-berry shake for plain metal ingot (76 c for 30 c): increase of 46
egg seasoner for plain metal ingot (175 c for 30 c): increase of 145
tangy sauce for frying pan (67 c for 125 c): DECREASE of 58
pungent sunrise for awesome pot (197 c for 300 c): DECREASE of 103
crystalmalizing chamber for awesome stew (2500 c for 200 c): increase of 2300

--2 offers were worth less than what the Rube wanted in return
    --Average gain for non-loss items = 830 c
    --Best offer = gain of 2300 c

This is very interesting... of the 3 offers that didn't involve an item worth less than 100 currants, 2 of them were rip-offs, and the last one had a large pay-off. I'll make an effort to properly remove all less than 100 c items next time.

  • I got better than usual but still crappy Rube offers (I do not have good fortune with any of the game's randomized / lucky elements, FWIW).

Give Rubeweed for Very Stinky Cheese
Give Abbasid Ribs for Heavy Gas
    Give Beaker for Awesome Stew
    Give Earthshaker for Mild Sauce
Give Obvious Panini for Cloudberry Jam

EDIT: Got unprecedented second Rube visit, two days in a row.

Give Wicked Bolognese Sauce for Secret Sauces
Give Whortleberry Jelly for Famous Pugilist Grill
    Give Emo Bear for Gassifier
Give Alchemical Tongs for Awesome Pot
    Give Onion Sauce for Cardamom

Did not do any adjustment of typical inventory, which includes high-end tools / dolls / essences and potions / high-end food and drinks as well as low-end stuff like basic harvestables and fruit, veg, and simple food / raw spices / drinks / sauces.

  • Random visit from the Rube.

    1) Piggy Feeder for Obvious Panini
    2) Meat Tetrazzini for Lemon Juice
    3) Yellow Crumb Flower for Pig Bait
    4) Pineapple Upside-Down Pizza for Pig Bait
    5) Tangy Sauce for Pig Bait

I was carrying the usual sorts of walking-around tools and high-end food. In addition, I was harvesting, so I had beans and a few musicblocks - as well as mining, so I also had a bunch of sparkly, a diamond and a moonstone.

  • Here's my old data from December if you're interested. Some of it may be incomplete, though. And also, this might be completely useless because this was when me and my friends were experimenting different inventory combinations to get dolls, and I also have the inventory for each trade written down somewhere. I kind of just want to contribute to the thread XD. First item is what the Rube offered for the second item, which is my item. An X means I had forgotten to record the item.

    1. Cubimal for Irrigator
    2. Cubimal for 12-Sided Die
    3. Cubimal for Crystalmalizing Chamber
    4. Still for Emo Bear
    5. Still for Emo Bear

    1-4. Tangy Sauce for Bean
    5. Nietschze Doll for Still

    1-2. X for Spinach
3-5. Lemburger for Knife and Board

    1. Bean tree bean for Hooch
    2. X for Meat
    3-5. Still for Fancy Pick

    1. (First offer was automatically skipped for some reason)
    2-3. Still for Pick
4-5. Crystal Chamber for Spice Mill

    1. Cubimal for Grand Ol' Grinder
    2. Ludwig Doll for EHSP (5/5)

    1. Ludwig Doll for Still

1-2. (Skipped first and second offer automatically)
    3. Still for Quill
    4. Scrumptious Frittata for Meat
    5. Corn Seed for Butterfly Milk

  • Important point: Are the figures for prices in this thread based on the info page for each item (i.e. a random, fixed price), or based on current lowest auction price (i.e. continually changing price). In either case, there is a problem. In the first instance, the fixed "value" has no meaning in this game and is arbitrary.  In the second instance, if the "value" is continually changing, based on supply and demand, then what may appear to be a good Rube trade in one case, may suddenly become an undesirable trade.
Posted 11 months ago by Anderella Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Anderella, it's based on the info page prices, since they don't change. Those numbers actually do have meaning, since it determines how much favor you get at shrines (the value in the info page divided by 10), and how much you get when selling to vendors (0.7 times the value at normal vendors, 0.8 times the value at tool vendors). For most items, you will get more selling it to the tool vendor than at auction (only a hand full of items sell for inflated prices at auction, and that is constantly changing--the commission and listing fees at auction also take a big chunk out of your actual profit).

Your point showcases why it's important to list all the items individually, rather than just throwing out a bunch of numbers at the end of the study. That way, people can look through the items and determine for themselves how many trades would be worthwhile to them personally.
Posted 11 months ago by Shepherdmoon Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I was not aware that the value on the info page is linked to the favour one gets at shrines. Thanks for enlightening me! :-D

In that case, items do hold intrinsic values, as it is tied to the price paid at a vendor or to a fixed amount of favour. It therefore makes sense to quote the value on the info pages.

  • Special inventory: no items worth less than 100 c: (EDIT: oops, I had a stack of cloud 11 smoothies in there, worth 69 c, so this apparently wasn't entirely true).

    rubeweed for frying pan (55 c for 125 c) DECREASE of 70
    shovel for frying pan (300 c for 125 c) increase of 175
wavy gravy for frying pan (75 c for 125 c) DECREASE of 50
    yummy gruel for blender (134 c for 150 c) DECREASE of 16
slow gin fizz for blender (76 c for 150 c) DECREASE of 74

--4 of the offers were worth less than what the Rube wanted in return
--The only offer that wouldn't have been a loss for me would have given a gain of 175 c.

** possible conclusion: It might be a really bad idea not to have ultra cheap items in your inventory. I'll try again with this exact inventory next game day.

  • hi there, no special inventory except maybe powders or potions? then i got one trade, fried rice for an older spice, and then he made a mad face and left...after just one! :/
Posted 11 months ago by Tuesday87 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Same special inventory as above: no items worth less than 100 c except a stack of cloud 11 smoothies:

    rookswort for blendor (75 c for 150 c) DECREASE of 75
    scraper for blender (300 c for 150 c) increase of 150
firefly jar for awesome pot (200 c for 300 c) DECREASE of 100
fancy pick for awesome pot (1000 c for 300 c) increase of 700
bushel of grain for cloud 11 smoothie (250 c for 69 c) increase of 181

--2 of the offers were worth less than what the Rube wanted in return
    --Average gain of non-loss offers: 344 c
--Gain of best offer: 700 c

** I think alot more data is needed to reach any real conclusions about how inventory content affects this. In general, most trades so far have had 1 or 2 rip-off offers (the Rube offering something that is worth less than the item he wants). Before the change I believe this was actually impossible, because the Rube was coded to only offer items that were worth a certain number times the worth of the item he wanted in return.

  • Are we going by the value the game gives everything? :3
These are all values found in the encyclopedia, not the auction:

Spice Plant Bean for Silvertongue sprig - 150 for 50
Secret Sauce for Plank - 28 for 5
Heavy Gas for Meat - 40 for 10
Grade A Earth Block for Hoe - 95 for 60
Hearty Groddle Sammich for Rookswort Seed - 93 for 25

    Conclusions:
    - All were a gain, though not a huge gain.
    - Best offer: 150 for 50

    Notes:
    - I had a Still , two crystalmalizing chambers, 2 EHSP, 3 FHSP, a Fancy Pick, and three Walloping Big Diamonds on hand, as well as a LOT of cheap items(two big bags worth of full stacks of grain, beans, cherries, etc.)
    - Was also carrying lots of cheap drinks and such.

I'm aghast that the Rube was trying to push No-No! I would never use such a thing. *cough* *twitch*

EDIT: Has just occurred to me, if someone receives an excellent offer, they'll take it. Then, since it wasn't 5 trades, they won't qualify to post here. Thus skewing the results, right? (Not a Stats major)

  • Good point, Wynella... maybe I should change the rules... If you're interested in helping out but can't refuse that most-awesome of offers, please post all data you have up through that point (i.e., if you got something cool on the 3rd offer and took it, post here what offers 1 through 3 were).
