Greeting recidivism

So, we all know that not everyone has a chance to be Greeted when they start the game, for whatever reason. We also have a problem with newbies not knowing what to ask (because they haven't seen the "big world" out there yet.) An idea was brought up about having the Rock offer a "quest" a little later in the game, whereupon you could summon a Greeter (or perhaps a Guide instead), for a little additional one-on-one attention. Say, after they've earned their first two achievements, the Rock says "You're off to a great start! Now that you've seen a little bit, would you like a Guide to help you with your newly discovered questions?"

  • Heh. I first read that as "have the Rook offer a quest" and was all o.O about it.

But yes, I like this idea!

I know when I joined, the starter street and first few quests were all very straight forward.
I never requested a greeter, not even sure if I remember seeing an option for that when I joined, but if I had seen the option, I'd not have requested, as I didn't need help at the start.
It was only after a while of exploring that I had specific questions to ask.  Felt kind of stupid asking in groups, but did anyway lol
Would have been great to have some questions answered once I had time to think of some :)
With any new site I join, I like to find my own way around at first. Then once I've got more of a feel for the place and am pretty sure I want to stay... then I think of questions I would like answers to.

  • Yeah, we keep kicking these ideas around.  It seems obvious to many of us that greeting comes too early, for most people, since they have no questions on the start streets, but tons of questions after playing in the rest of the world for a little while... so we have suggested a greeter cafe, a welcome wagon, having the option to talk to a greeter for the first several levels, and so forth.  Unfortunately, with the staff preparing for launch, they don't have a lot of time to spend on us, so for now we'll have to make do with things as they are... but we can continue to brainstorm about it.  It's possible that the addition of group halls will provide a fix.

I think this is a great idea. glum pudding's café idea is fabulous.

A few minutes after I arrived in-game, a friend teleported over to see how I was doing, and it was overwhelming. There I was, just doing everything for the first time, and I was so kerfuffled I could barely talk to her, let alone know enough to ask an intelligent question. I don't even remember the name of the place where I first showed up, I was that focused on figuring stuff out.

So yes--having a building (or perhaps a street) you could visit to chat with someone as needed would be fang-tastic. In the short term, perhaps the community could identify a location to act as an impromptu meeting spot for new glitchers to talk with the more seasoned beans....?

  • Yes, +1 too. It adds a "human" feel to the game, and encourages social interaction early on. I like the greeter cafe idea also. In my experience, I usually like to explore and figure out things on my own, and questions usually come after I've had an initial encounter with the game elements.

  • Yes, I didn't take the greeter option when it was offered because I didn't know what I wanted to ask. By the time I had questions I couldn't go back to get a greeter and because of the tiny netbook screen I was using at the time, I didn't spot the tab for global chat or live chat. It wasn't until I hit level 15 that I learned about general chat :-/

Maybe an option to teleport to the greeter cafe for free if you're under a certain level with a return journey to your original location? If the cafe had a notice board people could leave helpful tips for new glitches to take away with them.

  • Nice ideas Storm. And if you are offerring your services as a greeter, you could hang out at the cafe, talk to the other Glitchens and drink free coffees until someone needing help shows up.
