Subscriptions, Which would/did you get and why?

Okay, so I know I want to get a subscription in Thank You to TS for this awesome game. Now, for my wallet's sake I'd first jump to Tin level. But I know I've got my eye on some of the clothes that I won't have enough credits for a complete outfit without purchasing more credits on top of the subscription.

And this is where my fellow Glitchen come in. What makes you look at one subscription over the other? I can't afford Molybdenum. Sad but true. I COULD go copper, but then I'd probably have credits going to waste. But if I'm going to have to buy credits anyway, why wouldn't I just buy the credits and say "Forget the subscription"?

Thoughts? I really do want to hear your reasoning even if its "I wouldn't buy anything. You can play for free!" or "Wait till you can afford Molybdenum, it's amaze-balls!"

  • Hi Avery834 - it might be that we need to wait till the game goes live to appreciate the merits of the various subscription levels, since some of the extras in the higher-level subscriptions relate to things like referendum votes, etc.

I chose my subscription based on what I was able to pay, because, like you, I want to support TS. It's an amazing thing, this Glitch. It's super-cool that people can play whether they subscribe or not, so the game is open for everyone, regardless of ability to pay. I just figured that, since I can afford to do so, I'll support TS to the highest level I can. If it helps keep the company solvent and therefore helps keep the game free and playable for others in some small way, I'm in. :)

  • Unless you want a lot of teleport tokens, simply buying credits should suit you.  No one has any experience with the other benefit (voting), so it's difficult to guess how that will affect decisions.

  • What made me go for the Molybdenum one was the wardrobe items.
So many things I wanted (and still want) and then there will always be more wardrobe items added.
My credits rarely have a chance to go to waste, I usually spend them as soon as they arrive in my account.
I did however take advantage of another $25 credit purchase (while they're still doubling them for beta testers) and am trying my hardest to stop myself from spending those credits. I've managed a whole 2 days and only spent 65 of them! :o ...which is kind of a record for me lol  Attempting to save for when they release more items, as there are always new things I want.

If you go for Copper, you can save up your credits, without having to purchase additional credits, and in time you can afford the complete outfit you want, and most probably much more.  Plus you get the subscription items and vanity items (more choices!)  Plus the teleportation tokens are fantastic!
A one off fee, that could (if you're sensible with your credits) last you a whole 12 months. Seems pretty good to me :)

  • I went with Moly as well. The wardrobe was a large part of that, but so were the teleportation tokens and the fact that I get to help support something I enjoy.

  • Actually, now that you mention it, I like the forced-budgeting you get with a subscription.  You simply cannot spend all your credits for the year at the same time.  The only way to get an expensive outfit is to save up for it.

I went for the Moly too, but got someone else the Copper, since they aren't so interested in Wardrobe choices.

  • Well, I went Moly back in June. I was flush enough with cash that I could afford the one time payment of $89 know that it would last me a very long time. (If the game launches on Oct 1, it is going to work out to $5.57 a month. Or 1.3 cents per credit.)

I am NOT a clothes hound and have a banked 1068 credits and 46 tokens. (I used TONS of token last test though. TONS. I know I will end up using less as my TP skill increases.) I don't see myself spending credits very quickly... At least not if it is just clothes. But I am betting on some home "improvements" costing credits and am saving up for just that thing.

Part of my theory was also to avoid impulse buying of credits. Sometimes a clothing item gets added I want to get it. I know if I didn't have a subscription, I might be tempted to buy credits in small packages.

All that being said, I think going free is totally cool. TS is a company, yes, and they would love your money. But it is true that just by playing, you are adding to the game. YOU are part of the content. (Hopefully you are not a jerk and adding jerkiness to the game. Unless it is jerk sauce, which is delicious.)

  • I went copper mostly because I wanted some teleportation tokens; I suspect by the time the copper subscription runs out, I'll be swimming in credits and will drop back to tin.

Getting copper now makes some sense because of the beta discount, but it is rather a big lump to drop on gaming at once (imo, other people have different thresholds).  I prefer subscribing over a la carte credit purchase because of the wider selection of vanity/wardrobe.  I think Molybdenum is mostly for people who really want to give TS more money to support the game.

Nothing wrong with playing free, though!  I very much respect the effort Tiny Speck has put in to keeping the full game accessible free.  (Asymmetric Publications, the Kingdom of Loathing guys, gets props for that as well; thanks for not being Zynga, all of y'all.)

  • I'm going to go for Copper once I'm in a situation to afford it (I was laid off recently so I'm currently looking for work). Ironically when I am able to subscribe I'll have less free time to play! stupid RL ;D
Posted 15 months ago by HerbertSherbert Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Wallet-wise I too was going to go for Tin, but then I took into account how much I absolutely love playing this game.  I know that Tiny Speck has outside funding and all, but I really wanted to be a part of it as ground floor as I could get.

I find that I don't spend my credits all that much - an outfit here or there.  But I've seen rumblings that perhaps at some point our houses will become customizable, or there may be other things for which we can spend credits, so I save most of the credits I get each month.
Posted 15 months ago by Circe Subscriber! | Permalink
  • You can spend your credits on Teleportation Tokens, so they are pretty much endlessly useful (imo)

    http://beta.glitch.com/tokens/

They are 2 credits each, so 150 credits (from Copper) is an extra 75 teleportation tokens a month if you like.

And that's why I got Molbolydenum (haha wtf is that word), I can teleport all the time even at a really low level without having to worry about energy :)

  • Since I'm forced to live on a budget, I started with the lowest subscription and moved up to the second level and in August went to the top level.  Really happy I was able to do that before the game goes live.

Just a little confused since they have done the final reset yet we are still testing and the game hasn't gone live or been open 24/7 why has our subscriptions started?
Posted 15 months ago by xoxJulie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Your subscription started because that's how subscriptions work.  When the game goes out of beta, the timer on your subscription will be set back to zero, and it will start all over again.

You'll still have all the votes and tokens and credits that you got previously though.
Posted 15 months ago by WindBorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Julie, my understanding is that the subscription will reset to 12 months from whenever we go live (e.g. out of beta).  So, in other words, if we go live in October (likely, but still - IF), then our sub ending dates will reset from whatever date they are showing now to 10/12.
Posted 15 months ago by jasbo Subscriber! | Permalink
  • xoxJulie, as stated the subscription count down doesn't kick in until the game goes 24/7 at least. Reset is totally separate.
Posted 15 months ago by Lord Bacon-o Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Avery it really depends on how many credits you think you'll buy if you don't subscribe.

If you buy a Copper right now (before the beta-testers deal is finished) you'll get 150 Credits a month for a full year (1800 credits) for $54 (plus 20 TP tokens a month for a full year (240 Tokens).

if you think you might buy 100 Credits a month (100 credits costs $7) you could do that for 8 months and spend $56 for 700 credits and 0 TP tokens.

And 100-150 credits a month is pretty easy to spend. Especially as new items will continue to be added to the Wardrobe over time.

  • Howdy Lord Bacon-o, then I'm confused why are we getting the gift things to give away?  I was told that would only happen when our subscriptions started.
Posted 15 months ago by xoxJulie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • i got a moly quite awhile back it only took a single test that i was addicted and glitched but the main reasoning behind why i took that lvl was because i dont want this game to die out i hope my support in some small way will keep them going and growing.

  • What's easier for you? Bulk purchase at a discount, or a monthly investment that, if need be, you can skip?

I got the tin because I personally don't care much about anything regarding tokens, credits or the like, but wanted to contribute to the ongoing development of the game.

  • I started copper, but kept buying credits for new clothing (I mean, a lot). So finally, I decided to be honest with myself: I need more monthly credits for the damn outfits. I recently upgraded to moly and am very happy that I did.

  • go for the second one. you will get credits, subscription and tp tokens!
Posted 15 months ago by GiaTori Subscriber! | Permalink
  • xoxJulie,

The gift things to give away have nothing to do with subscriptions.

They were promised to those of us who bought credit packs when credit was first introduced.
Posted 15 months ago by WindBorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I bought the copper because I think it's a decent middle of the road option.  This is my first time subscribing to a game, and it was a little bit of an ouchy to outlay that kind of cash.  But I feel good about giving money to Tiny Speck.  I shouldn't say give--they're working for it, after all!  But this almost feels like supporting something on kickstarter, where you choose because you believe in the project.

That said, I didn't know how much I was going to like having 20 TP tokens a month.  Remember on the ghost hunt?  It was nice to be able to say "I can TP us there, just follow me!"  It's a cool benefit and I didn't even realize when I initially bought the subscription.  I was mostly thinking about how much I wanted the charcoal plad coat in the wardrobe!

  • Silver because it was in my price range.

  • I got the Tin subscription, partly to have more avatar customizing options, but mostly to contribute towards keeping Glitch in existence. When my previous favorite virtual world (Metaplace) went under, I felt bad for not having gotten a subscription to keep it going. After reading this thread, though, I upgraded to Copper since it's what I can afford, at least while it's half price.

  • I was going to stay as a free-only player ever since my free trial subscription elapsed (plus I had TONS of tokens left over from TP scripts from street projects done before the last reset)... but I got a sudden hankering for playing with outfits and thought "what the heck" and just (as in 5 minutes ago) splashed out on Moly :D

Now I can only hope that this game will live up to the investment... :)

  • wow.

apparently i get the copper, because a kind and generous person made a gift of it to me.

i was trying to think of how to afford a subscription and had saved enough to buy one i thought maybe today but i got home this afternoon to a message from TS that i had been given a subscription as a gift.

before i lost my job five years ago it was a thing i could have bought myself without having to think about it. the generous person who bought me this thing could not possibly have known my circumstances, and i am quite frankly floored.

i, too, am going to be able to teleport easily.

i, too, can get a costume maybe for zille-o-ween.

    that is AWESOME.

  • I started at copper because I want to support TS and I don't have much money. I just upgraded to molybdenum because my Glitchy self dresses better than I do & it's less than $7.50 a month. I wonder, for the super-broke who want to subscribe at the max level, if TS could sell subscriptions like gym memberships. Still have a year-long contract, but with the payment divided into monthly chunks.

Free here; though I'm considering going in on Copper. Wish you could scrap the tele-tokens in favor of more credits though.

  • I debated levels for a while.  I knew I wanted to buy a sub to support Tiny Speck.  I'm not much into clothes (RL or Glitch)  although as Munchma said my Glitch dresses better than I do! lol.  I went with Moly because A) I could afford it and B)  I'm really hoping that we'll be able to use credits to customize our homes. Heck I still haven't used all the 200 credits we got as Beta testers! lol  And did I say I LOVE the Teleportation Tokens?
Posted 15 months ago by Marla Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Thanks LBo & Jasbo, that makes sense we are still in Beta and Tiny Specks hasn't officially declared our subscriptions as having started.  So on that note I'm not going to over think about it anymore. :)

  • Can we give teleport tokens or credits to other members if we do not use them all? I went Molybdenum because I could afford to and I want Glitch to stay free for those who can not, but I doubt I will use all of either. I like to stroll around rather than teleport and after awhile, it will be all I can do to keep my closet organized!
Posted 15 months ago by Kookaburra Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Kookaburra,

You can use your tokens to "imbue" teleport scripts (needs the Penpersonship skill).  Then you can give those notes to anyone you want.
Posted 15 months ago by WindBorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Kookaburra, at this point no. You can (with high enough skill) imbue Teleportation Scripts and give them to players, but that is pretty limited. They have mentioned there may be ways of giving clothing. But they may be avoiding the ability to give credits directly to players (to keep the in came economy mostly removed from the real world economy)... but this is just a guess on my part.

  • I sprung for a copper membership. As a student, the price tag for molybdenum was a bit daunting all at once, even though I think it's perfectly reasonable in terms of price/week. The copper still gives me credits (which I love, and should learn to hoard better) and teleport tokens (which I do hoard, because I also like walking/making myself do it by skill). And even though we haven't seen how the voting will work, I like that I'm going to have votes, so once that's going on I can find out first-hand.

I think it's a case of copper suits my needs and supports TS, and once my year is up I can decide at what level I want to continue my subscription. Especially since I anticipate monthly payments at that point, and all of the prices look pretty reasonable on that scale.

  • I was going to just play for free... take my time and check it out... but a few weeks ago decided that I really wanted to support tiny speck.  This game is SO cool, I want it to succeed and keep going!!  So I went for molybdenum -- I can afford it at the moment and I thought it would be fun to have credits.  I didn't even realize how cool the teleportation tokens were when I bought it -- that turned out to be a surprise bonus!

  • I bought copper because I'm low on cash, but flush enough right now to want to be able to enjoy new fancy shiny purchases in the future. I crave new stuff whenever I'm low on cash, and this should help curb the actual purchases by replacing them with Glitchy ones!

Also: Best game ever darn well earned my money.

Edited: P.S.S. If I get this job -- fingers crossed! -- I intend to help a few glitchy friends out and gift a tin subscription or two. Just because that would make me happy, to help out someone else who is broke and unemployed.

  • I went copper - not sure how much time I will be able to invest with a full time job and two small kids 5 and under  - but, I was lucky enough to get in since alpha, and I've been so impressed with the fun and whimsical world Tiny Speck has put together that I wanted to support their efforts.

...and, I do love the teleportation tokens :)

  • Alright, you all convinced me *hugs shiny new Copper Subscription*

I actually really enjoyed reading all of your reasonings, so thank you for weighing in (and please, if anyone else wants to, still do! I'm sure more people than just me are going thru the debate as we prepare to make the leap out of beta and thus lose the beta tester deals).

TS has created such a wonderful game and I'm so happy to support it. This is the first online game I've paid for but thanks to the community that has been created on top of such a fun game, it was easily the best choice for me. When I started I fully intended to keep it at the free level but as was mentioned above, it is like supporting a cause on kickstarter, just without a middleman to take a cut.

Thank you Tiny Speck for creating a game I enjoy so thoroughly I feel compelled to give you money in appreciation!

Thank you Glitchen for creating a community I feel compelled to visit obsessively even when the game is closed!

Thank you polar bears for looking deceptively cuddly while still being terrifying killers! (What? I believe in the rule of three and polar bears may be unrelated but they deserve thanks too)

  • Once I can get some cash into my bank account, I'm buying a copper subscription. I'd rather have the monthly stipend of credits because I know I won't use them all in a single month.

I'm not opposed to someone gifting me a subscription, just so ya know. I'm a broke college student and any investment into my leisurely activities will only help fuel the moments I have to relax during my senior year of collegiate studies. XD Just think of it as a contribution to a future doctor's studies.

  • Being disabled and housebound Glitch has become my social life and I felt I had to subscribe to show my appreciation to all the hard working people who have bought us this amazing game. I have no income of my own so a  "please darling" to my wonderful husband got me a Molythingy subscription. If I had bought it myself I would still have bought the Moly purely for the teleport tokens and credits which I seem to never have enough of (those outfits are so tempting aren't they LOL)
It seems to me that if you are going to be buying credits and/or teleport tokens you might as well subscribe and know you have a regular supply :-) and with the special offer for beta testers it made sense to me to do it now rather than later.

  • I bought the Moly, as I love to dress my Glitch she has a huge wardrobe now and I still find thing to buy when new clothes are added. I am always teleporting to different places, so need tokens. Tiny Speck has given me a game I like to play, so I like to support them while I can.

  • I decided to purchase the Copper subscription. While I do like the occasional change in outfit, I’m far from a wardrobe hog and thus the highest tier, I thought, might be a little excessive.

Mainly, however, I’d like to support TS in what I consider to be a fantastic social networking experience. I hope I feel the same in 12 months time.
