How important is it to learn most skills?

I really love focusing on gardening and animal husbandry, but as I progress, I find I'm starting to need things that seemed kind of pointless before, like gases and bubbles. So I'm wondering how important it is to focus on skills that seem to be sort of miscellaneous or specialty items. Is it better to try and make as much as you can by yourself? Is there a lot of market for selling product on the auction house?

I love the feel of this game, but I feel as though I'm missing a bit of the point of some things. I know some skills are for gathering materials to use in building projects, but how do those work exactly? Is it important to learn those skills? Or will I remain blissful with my gardening and herdkeeping?

  • I think at some point you'll get bored of doing the same stuff, and want to try out something new, each new skills usually has a quest associated and a new set of items and tools.

Mining is one of the most money rewarding activities, for the new street projects, a little bit of everything is needed (you have to contribute items and work), if you plan to live or visit the bog region, there are several specialized skills, like herbalism.

Tinkering is very useful, I used to spend lots of currants buying new tools, that can be repaired.

  • Thanks for the tips! :) I found a building project, too, and donated what little I had.

What is herbalism good for, exactly? I wish the wiki were a bit more detailed instead of primarily regurgitating information off the encyclopedia. Not that I don't appreciate its uses. :)

  • You can transform gases & bubbles without the skills, they just might fail without them.

There's a big market for  basic resources -  cherries especially,  but earth, bubbles, beans, etc.

People who are involved in projects often need large numbers of these things and probably have currants to burn.

  • Many long-time players end up learning the entire skill tree. That might stop as the tree grows, but for now it's still a reachable goal and does give you new things to do.

  • Part of the reason the wiki is a little scant on details is so that it isn't a spoiler.  Imho.

  • Herbalism is for growing herbs/flowers (increases yield). The wiki may be light because those skills are pretty new (relatively) and there is a chance that the wiki has lost a bit of steam (not a slam on the wiki-folks... they rock).

At this point in the games development, I view a lot the skills as building blocks/base for future stuff. So the "importance" is sort of subjective. And almost everything inter-relates.

    Follow your muse, I say.

  • I say follow your innerGlitch.

Skills depend on your goals, sometimes I like doing quests and leveling up, other times just hanging out and socializing, other times just traveling UR and checking out locations.

  • I recommend just learning what you're interested in or need at the moment. Better learning is rather important to keep the learning times from getting out of control, so learn that one early on. At some point you'll know everything! It doesn't take too long to reach that point.

  • Thanks for all the help, everyone. :) I think I'm coming into my own pretty well the more I play. Absolutely loving the Glitch experience. And I of course meant no disrespect to the wiki folks; the wiki is fantastic. I only wish it contained significantly more information than you could find on the forums and in the encyclopedia. I'm OCD like that. XD;

  • If you want the wiki to have more info, join and contribute.  It is entirely run by and written by players.

  • It seems like, once launch is upon us, you will need to specialize more and depend on other players (or NPCs) for materials.

For example, I will probably go full scale mining/alchemy to make currants and buy the food I need, etc. Think of it like the real economy; we can only specialize in a few things and depend on other folks for the rest.

I don't doubt self-sufficiency will be possible, it will just be lofty goal.
