Lumber instead of Poison

This might sound counterintuitive, but I think the way to fix the whole tree/patch problem is to make killing trees EASIER and not more difficult.

First, get rid of the poison because it has really ugly connotations and it offends sensibilities. Instead of poisoning why not have a fourth option when clicking on trees. It currently stands as "harvest, pet, water" why not make it "harvest, pet, water, lumber". Lumber has none of the bad connotations of poison and it would allow to "normalize" the action of killing trees.

Lumbering should be as energy and time consuming as grinding is without the proper skill. That way it is annoying enough that the players won't want to do it too much.

In any case, killing trees is not so bad, you get more patches, people ALWAYS replant, actually, I think they love finding a free patch. What they hate is the depiction of a dead tree.

So to sum my suggestion up real nice:

a) get rid of poison
b) get rid of wood trees
c) get rid of the image of the dead tree

d) add lumber option
e) lumber should be energy and time consuming
f) make seeds cheaper for people who want to replant.

  • Also, maybe you can make it so that killing trees is blocked in certain areas (like Groddle) and then adjust the tree life cycle for the trees to die sooner

  • I think you're on to something here, Yaya!!

ETA: I also like the idea of maybe attaching this to an Arborist skill.   And a suggestion in the thread in the General Forum that perhaps calling it Pruning might be gentler.  Maybe pruning trees would only be rewarded if you didn't kill the tree in the process...   Wouldn't (and shouldn't) prevent the trees from being removed, but might help balance things out a bit.

  • good idea, maybe we just need a whole new perspective on the whole tree killing thing.

  • Also I believe it is currently difficult for a new player to grasp the idea that the patch might be useful in itself, or that killing a tree gives you planks.

By using the word "lumber" you imply that the person that carries the action is doing it for a purpose (get wood)

  • Which is actually why I prefer the term "pruning" rather than "lumber."

But either way and either choice..... both beat the heck out of poison!!

Thanks for the thread, Yaya!  And thanks for keeping the conversation open!

  • Yeah what I meant with lumber meaning you get wood is that it might encourage new players to explore the possibilities of patches and of killing trees, and not just planting
