Retire upgrade cards when they are not relevant!

This applies to many things, but the learning speed cards in particular. It's one thing to choose between cards that may be useful later, but it's different having to choose between cards that will never be useful, ever.

Examples:
If I have every animal kinship skill, the card for increasing AK learning speed should not appear.
If I have maximum energy tank upgrades, I shouldn't be getting more of those cards.
If my brain power exceeds the number of current skills available, I shouldn't get those either.

Of course, there are some cards that will always be useful, which is all the more reason not to have your hand clogged with cards you won't ever use.

  • More skills may come later, you never know.

  • Yes, the brain cards tempted me into getting two of them at 110k total. Then I realized, 'Wait! My brain capacity will likely never meet or exceed the number of skills I already have (currently 99 - working on the 100th now), let alone for a reasonable amount of imagination!" And, with the new 5% learning time vs the old 3%, it is highly unlikely to make any sort of impact (never mind significant impact) on new skills learning times. Grrrrrrrr.

  • I've got almost all the skills, with just two to learn.  I've taken the brain capacity cards several times and I've seen my time remaining to learn Mining IV drop in HALF.

  • Along similar lines, I have the Master Assembler card, which says, "Channel the mysteries of Alph, and assemble any machine in one swift action," and costs 500i.  I just received the option to purchase the Speedy Assembler card, which says, "Reduce the time it takes you to assemble any machine part," and costs 100i.  Is the second card going to make assembly faster than it already is with the first card?

  • Foolbunny, the brain cards will benefit you when learning any new skill even if you capacity is far below your current number of skills. In fact because the penalty is self compounding it actually makes a rather large difference.   : )

But yes, they will only help with new skills that have yet to be invented.

  • I'm buying up ALL the reduced learning time and brain capacity cards that get shown to me.

Staff have said that there are lots more skills coming.  So, I would be extremely unhappy if I couldn't get an AK learning card just because I know all the current AK skills!

And I'm delighted to have more space for new skills that I can learn without ANY penalty.

I'm voting a strong NO on this idea.  I don't want to be limited this way.

  • FWIW, the cards I have purchased made no difference whatsoever in the amount of time it's taking me to learn TR2. From my perspective, it's 110ki wasted.

  • No, they don't apply to skills you are already learning.

Some people have had success with stopping the skill, unlearning it and then starting over.  It reduced the total time significantly.

  • I think the idea of "relevant" is more an opinion than a game mechanics fact.  Perhaps a solution would be to let each person designate a small (half a dozen or so) "discard" pile of cards they don't want coming up in their hand right now.  This would keep the general random character of the process, but allow a bit of tweaking by the individual.  I'm not sure how this would work starting a character from scratch versus the Beta situation, but maybe it becomes available only once you have a certain number of skills?
