Redeem the Rook

Tonight I was in the Callopee mines. I tend to avoid them, because the factory farming of piggies in Neva Neva makes me sad. But tonight I found myself in them, because of the location of a shrine, with my destination set to a street in Pollokoo, my home turf. All was well…the new day happened. I got up to go afk for maybe 5 minutes. I came back, and lo, at my feet was a dying chicken, begging me to help her, saying she’d been rooked.

Never having participated in a rook attack, I was unsure how to help her. I clicked on her, and the “revive” option came up. So I “revived” her, but even then, she was in distress, and begging for more folks to help her. Thank goodness there were a couple of gals in the area who answered my plea for help…Glitchens to the rescue!

I checked out all the other critters in the area, and all were fine…I then went to local chat to find out what exactly had happened. Turned out some dude had been rolling his die…he rolled a number of Giants before he rolled the rook. And yes, it was only one guy; apparently he acted alone, with no help, and got the rook.

Well, I found him still there, and I went up and splanked him and then blocked him, but what else could I do? I couldn’t say anything to him, because he was well within his rights as a player to do what he did. I, with my multiple alt accounts, am suspect. I give tons of stuff away; I use my accounts to feed myself and my piggies and to benefit other players, and yet my gaming could be called into question, because I have a few alts. Whereas this dude can get away scott free by being an asshole, because that’s allowed. Justice?

This incident really upset me, for a few reasons. For one thing, it was distressing, to be sure, to come back from afk only to find a dying chicken at my feet. For another, it was maddening to see a sleazy player acting like an asshole, and to be helpless to do anything about it. Lastly, I disagree with the whole “rook as villain” thing, and have from the beginning, and so I’m taking this opportunity to speak out against it.

Ravens are lovely beings, as anyone who has taken the time to observe them or gotten to know them will attest. For me, as someone who dearly loves them, you might as well ask me to stun puppies or kittens or dolphins. Ravens are SO dear to me, that I simply cannot do anything to harm them. I have managed to avoid the dreaded “rook attacks” thus far, except for this last. I am led to believe that the rook will play an even larger part in the coming changes, and this I cannot abide.

I quit playing in alpha because I got the “smash the rook’s egg” quest, and I couldn’t do it. It’s not that I *couldn’t* do it, more that I would not. When, at the urging of a couple friends, I agreed to come back in beta, I simply ignored that quest, and tried to focus on the good aspects of this game, and there are many. I love this game, and I love the community…but the rook aspect saddens me and I will not participate. If the rook is going to be an even greater villain in the coming changes, then I will respectfully bow out. I would hate to lose this community of friends, but I hate to see such negative stereotypes being perpetuated.

I'd love it if the Giants could see fit to “redeem the rook,” as it were…that is, perhaps, find a way to make the ravens our allies in the fight against something greater. I am not opposed to fighting in general; not opposed to defending our beloved Ur against an outside threat, providing the threat is a worthy foe. That said, I don’t like fighting, and I sure as hell don’t like coming back from afk, only to find a dying chicken at my feet. Let’s take the fighting elsewhere, and then I may fight…if the fighting is contained to a certain area, an arena, as it were. But again, I will only fight a worthy enemy, like George Bush, or Sarah Palin, or the ultimate…Monsanto (*shudder*).

Or perhaps, something entirely made up? I'm sure the Giants are capable of exercising their imagination to that extent, and giving us a fearsome foe...something beyond imagination, like out of a Stephen King nightmare or some such. I will not fight ravens. I love them, and will not feed into that stereotype, and I hope you won’t either. And I’d like the battles to be removed from gameplay, so that those who choose to fight can, and those who choose to refrain will be left unmolested. I don’t think this is too much to ask. I left alpha because of the egg quest, and I would hate to leave again, after I’ve found such a wonderful community of friends. This game is so wonderful and positive and a *light* in so many lives…please keep it that way. Loves, K

  • Seriously? When you splanked your fellow glitch, you didn't REALLY hit him! And, the chicken, wasn't really a chicken! You SAY you love ravens. How can we be sure?

  • Mr. Dawwg has his ways... anyways:

In the past, me, my brother, and Mr. Dawwg spammed a with 3 people rolling multiple dice on a street resulting to 6 attacks during the Ghost Hunting Quest. People revived the animals which was fine with us. We did later note that you can gain huge amounts of XP when reviving animals in  our group called the "The Rook" (Now GGA, which is now dead, and Mr. Dawwg left it along with others, apologies).

I have also went to Aranna just to test out dice to wipe animals off a street, just to see what it would be like with no constantly moving objects (failed of course, since people came to revive the animals).

    And that's about it.

Whether someone rolls a dice or not, their feelings and sense of being does not disappear. In a virtual game where not much physical damage is done (the only "damage" I can think of would be hurting someone emotionally [with rude comments or whatever they are sensitive to] which would possibly lead to other things) people find the freedom to experiment and see what happens, or even if they know what happens, whatever they do is pretty much replaceable (despite the inconvenience).

@Xopher, I think that was a lie about PETA.

  • The dice have twelve sides, and each side has either a giant or a rook on it, so there's a 1 in 12 chance of rolling a rook.  If that happens, there is some very small probability that a minor rook attack will occur.  So any time you roll a 12-sided die, there is a tiny chance that the rook will come.

If you don't want to chase the rook away during an attack, you can simply leave the street.  As with most aspects of the game, participation is voluntary.  If you're opposed to hallucinogenic drugs, for example, and can't make a distinction between real life and a video game, you don't have to use purple.  Many people enjoy the rook, though, and to demand that the creators of the game either cater to you or lose you as a player will certainly result in your departure, sad though that may be.

  • I've tested rookrolling as well. I'm fairly confident the animals do not pass away. I haven't tested effects of a real rook attack on animals that have been rookrolled yet, but being 'rooked' by a rookroll may actually prevent animals from falling to a 'real' rook attack.

  • If the violence in this game is upsetting to the point that you no longer want to play then I think it is reasonable to say that your tolerance for violence is far, far below the norm and that video games mostly won't cater to you.  I don't say that to denigrate or dismiss your position or feelings, just to insert a dose of reality - being part of a very small minority in terms of preferences makes it less likely that any individual product will be made to your liking.

I'm a little troubled, though, by the characterization of the person who was rook rolling.  I guess I can't really object to you calling that person a jerk - I wouldn't be surprised if they even (light-heartedly) agreed.  But the original poster seems to be saying that they honestly think they are a bad person or that they are doing something wrong.  This is exactly the mindset that Tiny Speck was trying to avoid when they wrote: "Diversity of thinking, perspectives, strengths, and life experiences makes the world more interesting" and "Creating new game play by adopting roles (good or bad) is good. A little mischief can be welcome."  Just because someone is playing the game in a way that you don't like, or that has consequences that you don't like, that doesn't mean they are doing it wrong.

It is always sad to hear from someone who dislikes an aspect of the game so much that they feel they have to leave the game behind; there are many of us here who love the game and want it to be successful.  But ultimately we all have to choose how to spend our time, and while I'm sure you have friends in the game who will miss you, you should be encouraged to leave the game if it makes you feel that uncomfortable.

  • FYI, for those who are saying a Rook isn't a real bird... well yes, it is a different bird than a Raven. The Tower of London has a Rook-Keeper, not a Raven keeper. Similar birds, but a rook is a rook, and a raven a raven, and a crow a crow. Go hit wiki about rooks. Sort of cool.

Personally, I love all the corvidae, but don't take offense to the Rook being the designated "opposing force". And a story without conflict, a story without darkness... not much of a story. Step back and try and think of it in archetypal fashion. Think of your own being and the edges of it, and pushing out into the void beyond. Some things are dangerous, some are amazing.

I actually feel the most sad when I get home and one of my "named" animals has passed and left a little present of milk or meat. But it is part of the cycle, and a chance to season some more eggs.

  • Wow, lots of...uh...interesting posts! :D I'm not quite sure where to begin to respond, but heck, I'll give it my best shot and dive on in.

First off, to those of you who wanted to know why I referred to the dude who rolled the attack as an asshole, it's quite simple, really...it's because I was pissed off. I wrote the post while I was upset and I probably should have taken some time to cool off before opening this discussion. But regardless of how I phrased my initial post, my feelings are clear: I've been troubled for some time by the "rook as villain" aspect of the game, and as a secondary concern, I personally think it's really uncool of folks to rook-roll in public areas with no regard as to the effects those actions may have on the surrounding pixelated flora and fauna, or on other players. I tend to avoid the whole rook aspect of this game as much as possible, and I didn't enjoy having it suddenly intrude upon my otherwise tra-la-la gameplay.

Secondly, I wasn't trying to "advertise" or flaunt my secondary accounts. There are different forms of gameplay, some of which are considered questionable while others are considered acceptable, and I was trying to make the point that the distinction between the two may not always be clear. In illustrating this, I used my alt accounts as an example. While I don't feel that I have abused my accounts or used them to unfair advantage over other players, I understand that the use of alt accounts in general is largely considered questionable. But an in-game action (rolling a die, in this case) that directly (and sometimes negatively) affects surrounding players and Ur's "life-forms" is generally considered to be perfectly acceptable gameplay, and basically I was questioning the fairness of that. As for my few alts, they are as of now houseless wanderers, content to roost in trees and "do their own thing." I realized from this discussion that while I don't believe I have been abusing the system by my use of them, it does indeed appear to be a grey area, and so I've decided to err on the side of caution by no longer engaging them. So consider me alt-less and duly chastened, and let the splanking begin.

Finally, thanks and a huge hug for the warm letters of support, and kudos to Ren, Humbabella, Bruja, LokiPDX and others who posted in ways that contributed productively to the discussion instead of fanning the flames, whether you share my view or not. And while I greatly appreciate nearly everything Ren had to say, I have to respectfully disagree with the statement that all I want is for the Rook to have a "reason" to be a bad guy. That's not it; the reason I can't/won't participate in rook-related game elements is because I feel that the Rook as "villain" perpetuates an unfair negative stereotype.

Rooks/ravens/crows are awesome birds, and they have endured a bad rap for far too long, just as black cats and black dogs have endured a similar reputation, often with tragic results. This reputation obviously is quite undeserved; it's a product of our collective imagination that has nothing at all to do with the truth of who these beings are, or the goodness they are capable of. Our "nevermore" image of the raven is largely unconscious, yet it persists, and will continue to do so until we consciously choose to perceive otherwise and get to know them for who they really are and stop perpetuating a destructive myth. The "rook" doesn't need to have a reason to be a bad guy; in much of society's estimation, s/he already is, for no good reason whatsoever. The perception and continued depiction of the "evil rook" is something I'd like to see change, in this game, and in the world at large.

We are helping the Giants to dream this world into being, and this thread is my two cents (or maybe a buck fifty) as to the direction in which I'd like to see this dream go, which, to be quite clear, is AWAY from the negative stereotype of the villainous black bird and maybe even towards a more harmonious coexistence. We're all co-creators here, all of us interacting and shaping our world together, for better or worse. I don't plan on leaving any time soon, and I regret that I initially reacted in such a way as to suggest that I might. Sloppy Ketchup, thanks for the song link, it's one of my faves...but I'm not *quite* ready to sail away just yet. ;) I'm far too excited about the upcoming changes, esp the new housing, and curious to see where this dream is going to take all of us. If the Rook ends up playing a larger part in a way that I feel demonizes the crow family even more unfairly, well, then I guess I'll worry about it then. But for now, I'm just riding along with this game and generally having a blast, even if I do feel passionately about certain aspects, so if this is a dream, don't wake me up. And now if you'll excuse me, I'll jump down off of this soapbox and see you in game, cuz I've got piggies to feed.

  • Wait… what… you mean the original post wasn’t a joke? I was certain it was a joke.  I mean, who starts a topic by stating that they didn’t like part of the mythos of Glitch, threw a temper tantrum and left the game… then came back, are upset that the mythos hasn’t changed? Who then complains that other players are jerks for exercising valid game play mechanics and threatens to leave again if the game isn’t changed to suit their views?  I get that you like rooks, and that’s fine, but you might as well complain that bureaucrats and lizards are unfairly portrayed in Glitch, or that you are forced to witness other players donate to shrines and it upsets your religious sensibilities.  Glitch is a game… a fantasy world.  Think of it the way you might a fantasy book with rooks as the villains, if it upsets you greatly you don’t expect the author to re-write it to cater to your views… all you have to do is close the book and not read it.

  • I think too many people get hung up on the perception of good and evil as dichotomous properties; a thing is not necessarily inherently good or evil, so much as a thing, in and of itself, just "is."  An individual's perception of that thing is really what puts the value of that thing into play. Does the Rook bring value to you? As it is today? Whether you answer yes or no, judge the rook on that.  Then, ask yourself, what can I do today to maximize or minimize that perception, and which would suit me better?

From my perspective, to identify the rook as an "evil" character in the world of glitch is errant and lazy. The Rook is an oft-unchecked power of destruction, yes, but it is not "evil." The rook destroys, true, but the rook also creates. The rook creates opportunity for Glitchen to come together. This is at least one positive characteristic of the rook.

As a cataylist for change, the rook is, perhaps, more powerful than the giants. When was the last time you saw "Zille has appeared in Limenski Deeps!" shouted out across Global Chat? And when that has happened, have you seen as many as 100 glitches come running to partake in the Giants glory? Few, I would wager. However, the Rook curries that kind of reaction fairly regularlly. The rook, my friends, has strengthened the glitch community far more regularly than the continued absence of any real kind of gigantic influence on UR.

Much like the Death Arcana in traditional Tarot, the rook is much misunderstood, yes. But that doesn't mean his behavior is off. Death, Like the Rook, creates change. And through change, we have the opportunity to become better glitchen.

I would suggest, good glitchen, that you comb the literature included in this forum, and find for yourself, quiet whisperings that echo this philosophy. There are those among you who know the truth about Ur, about the Giants, and about the rook. There are those among you who have sprinkled the truth here and there. I would suggest that those truths are unlikely to paint an image wherein the Giants are the one-true force for goodness and that the rook is the one-true force for evil.

The truth, as they say, is out there.

Are better glitchen not what the giants had in mind for the people of Ur all along?  I ask you, KitchWitch, why do we have to deny the reality of what the Rook is in order to value the rook as a people?

    The rook, simply, is.

The only thing you can really change regards that, is you.

That being said, if I were to point to a villain on Ur, it would be the DeImaginers. I dislike the bureaucracy greatly.

  • I really like HeyGabe's comment. There is evil and good in all creatures. But that balance does not cause a rook to be good or evil - it is merely a componet of the rookness. The world can not survive without destruction, parasites and scavangers to clean up the past and allow us to start anew. Destructive forces are only bad if you think a static ecosystem is ideal.

  • My two currants:
Rolling a rook doesnt make someone an a*****. TS wouldn't have created this game element if it wasn't okay to use it. Besides, how destructive is it really? It causes the imaginary animals to lie down on the ground and complain until we hit a button to bring them back up again. I, too, get attached to them- but death is one thing, and temporary "rooked"ness is another.
Also it's great to love ravens/rooks- they're beautiful birds. The Rook, however, is simply a game element to unite Glitchen against an antagonist. Try to separate it from real life.
I do think it's an interesting idea to make peace with the rook in the future- I wonder how that would play out? That could be really fun too. But then we would need another antagonist, and somewhere somebody would speak out against villainizing whatever it was.
Also I love all the thoughtful responses in this thread. I now have a lot to think about.

They know you won't leave until your currant balance is 4999c or below. There was a time I travelled near and far, enjoying the abundance that the animals, the trees and the environment offered. Now? I carry empty bags that I can fill as quickly as possible, just to sell to the Tool Venders. I spend way too much time in the Ancestrial Lands...dodging the jujus, racing to get that last quoin, and cursing the glitch that just left for the next street after I just arrived. Once upon a time, my beautiful home was filled with bounty that was merrily gathered from the streets of Ur. It's ALL gone now, except my cubimal collection! I have pawned everything but my tools needed for harvesting. After a visit to a Toy Vender, I throw the common cubimal out with the trash. I covet the Rube and Uncle Friendly. These have yet to appear in my ritual habit. The moral of this? You can't judge a character by its cover. And, I'm sure the title 'Toy Vender' is just a ruse. I will quit, but not before I get Rube and Uncle Friendly in my cubimal case.

and just in response to haygabe's comment for the sake of discussion... my idea behind good and evil... is selfless vs selfish. like... if you do something at the expense of another... or purely for self gain... that is more likely an evil act. whereas, if you do something for the benefit of another, that is more likely a good act.

my friend and i literally had like a 2 hour+ discussion on good vs evil and that was the idea that came of it. selfish vs selfless = evil vs good. but it's still an oversimplification. but it makes it more usable. good vs evil is hardly usable when discussing how we should behave imo.

  • *sigh*
    NEVER read forum comments
    KitchWitch,
There are a lot of very good-hearted people who are attracted to this game because the mechanics encourage a sense of community, and reward community-mindedness. But the devs have also built in some interesting mechanics that I perceive as social experiments that allow individuals the freedom to act in ways that are counterproductive to the community as a whole. They also include mechanics so that individuals within the community can respond to those actions and counteract them - i.e. "tree wars".
This obviously sets up conflict between those who see the game as a way to build community and those who wish to entertain themselves individually and feel that anything possible in the game is "allowed" (which by definition it is) even if it is not particularly socially acceptable or community enhancing. Every online community I have participated in has these folks, if nothing else they get their lulz in the chat or forums.
While I was initially turned off by the fact that my piggies and butterflies eventually die of old age, that a corvid was cast as a villain, and that trees could be poisoned - I have "stepped back" myself and look at it as a fascinating experiment that I am very interested in seeing evolve. I enjoy a lot of the activities, I enjoy participating in community, and choose not to participate in drama-laden aspects of the game. YMMV :)
You are a kind hearted person, and I hope you can find a way to reconcile the game and the community aspects.

So yes, I guess anything I am permitted to do in the game is allowed.  Then it comes down to a person's morals of how far you're willing to go :) I would never steal or take property in real life but I get a real buzz walking down a street here if I'm visiting someone and I find a rainbow or some other left item :) My back garden in-game now is amass with rainbows :D It's looks pretty I think!

On another note and slightly off-topic (and prepares for flames) I prefer to mine alone too. I'm sure other players think me odd when I run off when they start mining the same rock but bloody hell.  I get double the ore and gems if you leave me alone lmao.  I am here to achieve my own set goals :) Achieve a million quoin and get to level 60 - getting close to both goals by which point the changes will be close to happening and I can start all over again :)

  • Personally, I'm offended by the indiscriminate squeezing of chickens and abduction of piggies. Will the violence never end? And don't get me started on the "massaging" of butterflies. Massage? Right. Insect trafficking and exploitation are wrong, regardless of what *insert preferred rightwing bogeyman* says. Oh yeah, and why can't I log into my multiple alt accounts simultaneously and roll the die with all of them while teleporting to St. Louis (headquarters of Monsanto) and calling people who do nothing at all wrong vulgar names?
There's just so much to be offended by in Ur, I don't know where to begin.

  • @Casarat - Since I leave a TON of those rainbows about for people to find and pick up, I am very happy to know someone is enjoying finding them ;)
@Shiromisa - Sorry if I came off as patronizing, or pushed a button. I am used to more formal forms of communication. I shall attempt to lolol more :)

  • bayBi glch. Okay. Kevin Bobson prolly intercepted/deleted the messages because he doesn't like me at all.

Rook, I uh don't really log in any more. I don't see the point. I have two drafts of really long forum posts that I want to make. But, I'm not ready to post them yet. I really only am interested in the forum until the game is more interesting. As-is, I think my presence is best made here on the forums. If you need my help IG, let me know though. I wish there was PMs.

kalstept, at first i wanted to say i disagree. mostly because what you're saying is trying to paint it as a bad picture. but it's a free game. you get it for free. don't forget that. they make money through micro payment, yes. but that is a legit way to do it. there's nothing immoral about it. but also, they've mentioned that their end game plans involve releasing aps, and even possibly nintendo games.

  • @Mr. Dawwg, I got that lol. Sorry to hear, man. I won't forget good times.  Could I see those two drafts by any chance(if you don't mind, of course)? Maybe like a private pastebin link with a password posted in "you know what" (that one group)?

  • Seeing the same arguments being held over completely different concepts really drives in the feeling of another world. I love it.

  • Well im going to add my opinion (for what it's worth!!!)
I have known Kitch for quite some time, from a previous game and I was one of the people who asked Kitch to come back to the game during the original Beta period, and i'm really glad that I did! Funnily enough, we discussed the fact that she would probably not like the Rook Attacks but as I see this as a much smaller element of the game that you do not have to participate in, I honestly didnt think this would be too much of a problem.

I personally am not a fan of Rook Attacks and rarely participate in them, and can honestly say that I jumped off my chair with fright when i experienced my first attack with no warning!! For anyone who wasnt around when the attacks were first introduced, it was a bit of a shock, hard to explain but it changed the game for me quite dramatically - wasnt expecting anything like that!!

Kitch is quirky, Rook crazy and i wouldnt change her for the world :) I can honestly say that she is one of the nicest people I know in game, always willing to help and listen if you need a chat and in my opinion, the more people like that in game the better. We both came from a game previously that had a very strong community and I guess we just want to try and build that here too, I personally think its a good thing :)

I do think that you overreacted a bit hun and as you say, you wrote the post when you were upset - the player who rook rolled didnt do anything wrong and it was just unfortunate you were there at the time!!! I really hope that you dont leave the game as I will certainly miss you xxx

  • "I, with my multiple alt accounts, am suspect. I give tons of stuff away; I use my accounts to feed myself and my piggies" - @KitchWitch

This is arguably a violation of the  Community Guidelines. Using one account to feed another account seems to violate the Play Fair policy. By using one account w/ the sole purpose to give advantage to a second account does provide an unfair advantage over users who play by the rules and only have one account.  If you have two accounts that are on separate in-game paths that is perfectly allowable but using one account to advantage another is unfair.

Even if you do not use these alternate account NOW they did provide an advantage in the past allowing you to advance in a game unfairly. It doesn't matter if you feel like you used them fairly or unfairly. If you used them in the manner you described this is and advantage and therefore is unfair. You may not have violated the letter of the TOS but you've definitely violated the spirit.

This whole post started by griefing someone for rolling a dice, which is a perfectly legal in-game action, and how that is a determent to your in-game experience, yet by your own admission you've cheated, even if it is in a very small way, and do not feel this action has negatively impacted this social game.

    Just sayin'.

    Play Fair:
    • - Using bots, mules, or other hacks to gain significant and unfair advantage in the game is not allowed.
    • - Multiple accounts controlled by one person playing at the same time is not allowed.
