How do you Identify your Glitchling?

So, unlike most other mmorpgs, Gltich doesn't have various "races" and "trades" per se-- you can do anything and be anything. But I know at least a few Glitches "identify" as a certain thing--like a cook, or a livestock farmer, etc.

For example, I personally identify as a miner. I like scaling the heights for metal and crawling the caverns for precious sparkly, churning out moly and finding gems.  While I do other things, and have all the skills, mining is my main "thing".

I also know at least one Glitch who defined herself as a "socializer". She explained that the doing of "things" was secondary to the social aspects for her; chatting, trading, doing group activities, etc.  She wasn't happy unless other people were online too.

So, I wonder, how do you identify?

A little Glitch who's going about her life, doing all sorts of things in order to experience all there is to experience and reaping the rewards along the way :)

ETA: I seem to be a hedonistic, peat-obsessed, gift giving kinda glitch.

  • I used to be witch- I lived in the swamp, grew herbs, tinctured, and brewed potions. Then one day I discovered cheffery and took up the life of an itinerant soup kitchen glitch, feeding thhabite hungry wherever they might be found. These days I still do some of that but I'm more of a hardcore cubimal junkie and spend most of my effort feeding the habit. I hope one day to be able to say that I got the trophy by opening boxes

  • I got the Animal Husbandry skills first, so I tend to think of myself as an animal protector. I occasionally wander the back roads and relocate piggies who are hungry to be near trees, and I make sure to care for those trees in isolated spaces so they bear fruit (or bubbles, or beans, or...) for the piggies to eat. Nothing warms my heart more than to see piggies come trotting over to a newly watered, petted, and harvested tree and watching their cheerful "yum!" as they chow down.  I've since acquired other skills, but Humbaba and her charges will always have a soft spot in my feelings.

I keep thinking I need to carry potions of Animal Youth so I can help reduce overcrowded populations when the animals get depressed. And sometimes I will try to rename animals when the whole flock is named the same thing. Everyone deserves a name of their very own!

  • This question calls to mind crashtestpilot’s citation of Bartle’s paper on the different types of MMO players (I don't have the ability to add links from this computer and am an html Luddite, so please bear with me).

    ctp's citation:
    www.glitch.com/forum/genera...

    Bartle's paper:
    www.mud.co.uk/richard/hcds.htm

In a nutshell, Bartle classifies MMO players into 4 types, represented by the suits of a deck of cards: "Hearts" are social; "Diamonds" are achievers; "Spades" are explorers; and "Clubs" are griefers. The paper makes for interesting reading and I’ve found myself thinking of the game lately in this context.

That said, I suspect you may have been thinking more along the lines of how one identifies oneself in terms of a glitchly profession (though perhaps personality comes into it a little as well). I was an explorer until I’d explored almost everything. I was a hoarder until my hoard was depleted in one fell swoop. I was a miner when I needed currants. I was a gardener-chef when I was focussed on making ridiculous quantities of awesome stew. I was, and still am, a hobby herdkeeper with a small number of animals. I was, and still am, a wanderer. I am an imperfect hermit who, while happiest spending time alone and conversing when the spirit moves me, ends up spending crazy amounts of time IMing such that it’s hard to actually play sometimes. When it comes down to it, I guess I’m a butterfly, carried wherever by the winds of the game, shifting from task to task and simply existing for the joy of it...or something like that.

  • Now this is a thread I wish we could bookmark...love the responses...

I started out as a crazed miner - mined the first 15-16 hours (well, once I learned mining I) after the game was reset to earn back my original Alakol home from beta. While I love mining, I think all that early mining knocked the wind out of my sails for a while. I am a devout giant atheist - don't donate to shrines, just take the favor earned from doing other tasks.  I am a friendly loner (for reasons beyond me, I have lots of friends on my list even though I'm a total introvert).  I am a bored engineer, still waiting on the return of the street projects also. In the mean time, I'm a house builder and interior designer, which that creative activity being introduced in the game makes me very happy.  It's even gotten me back into some mining for the building materials...did I mention I was a crazed miner?!...

  • Forum maven; explorer, with accumulative tendencies. Mostly for the reason that when you go hard core into project mode, it sucks to run out of that vital ingredient.

Solution: stockpile all the things you need for your activities. Result: I need another 10 SDBs.

I basically do three things: Ingots for crystalmalizers and building products; fuel-cell making to support same; rhk and gardening to support awesome stew, to thereby support mining.  With occasional runs to hoard wood for future building/furniture.

All of these activities net me enough music blocks, gems, etc, that I have an adequate capital pool. I tend to flip between increasing my corpus to cover my gardening costs, and donating to emblem/iconize.

When I go to parties, I like to make cocktails, also.

Genki-baba is primarily a cook, gardener, and essence-maker (Old woman who was around during Prohibition days, and is therefore proficient in the making of hooch. haha)

    Genkimama
is a jack-of-all trades, doing whatever I feel like at the moment, which is primarily exploring and doing quests.  Squeezing/petting/massaging/hugging/harvesting everything and really taking my time to enjoy the game and see all there is to see. ^__^

  • I guess I evolved. As a newbie, I fancied myself an explorer. My favorite pastime was to set a destination on the other side of Ur, and see the sights and take detours on the way. I loved- love- community: I bought a Groddle Forest treehouse with a wonderful neighborhood assiciation. I also, fascinated with everything, tried everything. Then one day I got a quest that required a paper tree (harvest every tree type in a game day) and everything changed when I asked in global or somewhere where to find one. "paper trees in Ilmenskie" so off I went. Of course, being a little explorer, I had to explore the whole Caverns, and ventured into the Deeps. I happened to be in Nandak when a party was leaving for Ajaya. I don't even think I asked where they were going. "Can I come?" AB was the first place I was welcomed back by name, and from then on I identified as an ABer. You could say I grew up there: from level 10 on, I hardly left. I've made so many friends there, and still frequent it. After level 20some, I came to the surface to stay a while. I got some completist badges, did some quests. Basically became a jack of all trades. So that's who I am now. A sort of Jack-of-all-trades and an ABer. I still love to travel. Hmm, looks like I just told my entire Glitchen life story. Oh well.
