Heads up, Grab those Subway Badges?

In global earlier tonight, I noted aloud that there weren't subway stops in the new areas of the world, and wondered why. Among other responses, we got this:

stoot barfield -  subway is not long for this world

When asked about badges, no further news was forthcoming. So, uh, might want to work on your subway badges!

(as an aside, I cannot imagine what it must be like to be stoot. everyone hangs on your every word, so you have to be reeeaaallly careful what you say!)

  • Shh! Maybe an underground subway station? We'll call it "Terminal 13". Though we need to make a sort of treaty with the Capi- err, I mean staff, right?

  • what happens if you drop something on the train and get off? Does it disappear?

  • Ermine--since the subway is instanced, stuff you drop will remain so long as someone is in that instance. If everyone leaves, poof! It's gone, just as with a party space.

dm--not saying the GM conspiracy ain't true, but bear in mind that it was above-ground streetcar lines that were bought and torn up--not subways--and the motivation was in part to expand the market for their buses, not just cars. ETA: The purchase and destruction of these streetcar lines took place in a number of cities, but by no means all. Regardless of the slap in the face of the public good delivered by GM and its holding companies in these particular locations, urban sprawl unfolded in many more places beyond these; i.e., the sprawl happened regardless, though was certainly helped along in those particular locations, I'm sure.

  • @Smashin Grab I'm not getting what you're saying here...
(among other things, your definition of "the Glitch 1%" and my definition of the same term [which I believe I was the first to use, fwiw] are completely different)
I've always defined "the Glitch 1%" as those who joined in alpha/beta and are continuously showered with new and rare items (yeti, pickle, GNG, Dusty Stick, etc) while the rest of us must toil endlessly and still have only questionable hope of ever being able to buy such items (I'm level 60 and have several million currants, but my pursuits of buying a yeti have been so far hopeless). Whether I agree with the whole real-world issue of "the 1%" is a different issue entirely, but it serves as an apt metaphor to use in this game. :)

Continue to call level 60's "the Glitch 1%" or whatever you like. It isn't my actual point. My point is this: Level 60 has nothing to do with when you joined or who you know and every bit to do with how hard you worked for it. I hit 60 about two months from my join date. I know many, many people who joined long before I did (way back in first beta, or even alpha; I joined about a month and a half after release) who have only recently leveled to 60, or in some cases, aren't even close yet. I could give you stories of all the work I put in to level, culminating with the final push from 59-60 (involving an all-nighter and coffee). But suffice it to say, it's got every bit to do with determination, and nothing to do with luck. (as an aside, what's this you say about invites? I never had to wait for one... I just walked in and signed up - so there goes your "it's who you know" argument)

Back on the topic of subways... I've always thought they were kinda useless, so aside from losing the ability to get the badges, I won't miss them, but I dunno about whether I'm going to bother to grind those badges before they're gone, simply because grinding subway badges seems even less fun than grinding GoC the coop way (no offense to those who choose to do either though).

As a final note, I don't know where you're getting this "ignorant level 60's don't need the subway, but they're screwing over everyone else by wishing them away" thing.
    A. True. I don't need the subway. But I've never complained about the fact that the subway exists. It's completely useless to me aside from badge grinding purposes, but it does me no harm in its existence.
    B. Where does the idea come from that only high-level players are able to teleport? I checked through the requirements for learning all the TP skills, and the only prerequisites with level requirements are Better Learning I (level 3) and Meditative Arts I (level 4). Furthermore, Bureaucratic Arts I (required to obtain Your Papers to ride the subway) also depends on Better Learning I, and therefore on having attained at least level 3. And if you're complaining about the "elite Glitch 1%" level 4 players being able to teleport, while the poor level 3's are relegated to using the subway... I give up. What fun is a game where you don't have to put in even a little effort, ever? Actually, we level 60's have it way tougher than low-level players when it comes to teleportation. With TP5, it's 10% of your energy cap per teleport. That's 286 each time at 60. In a nutshell, I suppose my point is that the removal of subways would in no way put lower-level players at any sort of disadvantage compared to these "elite" level 60's of which you speak.

  • One good thing about grinding both subway and Game of Crowns badges is that you can do all sorts of other "work" while doing them, like grill sammiches, tincture potions, etc. So, if you need to do that anyway, you might as well be riding a train or holding a crown.

  • True, but I find it a lot more fun to grind GoC the normal way (e.g., actually playing the game). And I'm saying this as someone who totally sucks at it by the way... I have not won a game in well over a month.

  • Okay Stoot says here (http://www.glitch.com/forum/general/19795/page2/#reply-206235) the subway is staying, just being changed/upgraded. But I still think having a group together to get these badges is a great idea! Anyone make one?

  • Has anyone had any trouble with getting their subway badges? I was working toward the 103 rides badge the other day and was watching the number of times I had visited the subway car. It was over the 103, but no badge. Has anyone else experienced this? I can't tell if it is a bug or if the counter for the number of visits and the one for the number of rides are typically not in sync with each other... Any input would be appreciated.

EDIT: Oops...feel stupid, should have read the other forum topics first...."Mind the Gap" answered my question. !! *FACEPALM*

  • There's already a group that will serve our needs, badge hunters! The Subway Riders Association (http://www.glitch.com/groups/RUVC09C06JH26MH/). I've just joined. If you guys do too we can use group chat to get a few people on the train at once and start making quick trips. Maybe one time around the whole circuit, getting off and back on at each stop? Or if it might bug and not recognize the trip, just go back and forth between a couple stops for a while?
