Someone stole my stuff...

Is there any way for someone to find out who took their stuff?  I image not, but someone took all of my emblems and I'm a little sad about it.  I know they aren't worth anything (except fake money) but they took me a long time to earn and were good for a little extra iMG or energy when I needed a boost.

Why the hell would someone take fake stuff?

  • if the items were in your house I would check with who you have given keys out to.  If you dropped the bag on your street - shame on you and the person that picked them up.  So sorry this has happened.

  • I've been asking that question for months now. No one seems to have an answer. Where were the emblems when they were stolen?

  • did u have a full set?  im sure that can be replaced easily enough, since everyone hoards everything..

  • Sorry, not sure why you would ask "Why the hell would someone take fake stuff?". I don't mean to be rude to you, maybe you don't read the forums often, but as it has been stated many times if something is set down unattended in a public space (including your home street) it is fair game, people assume it is free for the taking. Now, as someone posted if the emblems were in your house or backyard then look to someone you invited in or gave a key to. Also, since the entire game is made up of pixels, not sure why you would question why someone would want your "fake stuff" made up of pixels.

  • @Gizomospooky -- Being snarky at Bubbles about this is rude. 1) We don't know where the emblems were when they were taken, 2) IF she did set them down, it could have been an accident, we don't know the details, and 3) I  myself have asked  why anyone would bother to steal in a game where money literally grows on trees, so I think her question is legit.

  • I have a few extra emblems, Bubbles -- I'd be happy to pass a couple on to you to replace stolen ones. Message me in-game!

  • No one stole you stuff. Misleading title. You left it down and someone picked it up. People leave down items like unwanted cubes for others. Just have to learn from mistakes.

Why do people take fake stuff? For the same reason you're upset about losing said fake stuff.

  • I'm not entirely convinced that the OP had anything stolen.  It's pretty typical for people to leave messages in global or the forums complaining about having stuff stolen.  Do-gooders always rush in to make up the difference.  Nice way to get some stuff.  I'm sort of cynical these days...

ETA - it does happen, but in this case, my apologies to and sympathy for the OP.

  • Sorry to stir the post by posting.  Since there seem to be a few main points/questions:

I don't read forums often.  I unpacked after moving and didn't have enough space to store everything, so I left the emblems and a lot of other stuff on the street.  I don't know how to get to anyone else's street, so I thought you could only get to mine if you had a key.  Clearly, I was wrong.

I'm also not upset as much as I am baffled.  I still think it's pixels and as someone else pointed out, "money" grows on trees.  It just took me a long time to get them so I was a little sad that they were gone.  Lastly, thanks to the people who offered to contribute emblems.  I appreciate it.  I friended you all (I think) but not to collect on the offer - just to have a few more friends. :)

  • It seems pretty obvious the issue of "taking stuff" from home streets has become a habit for some players.
Posted 7 months ago by MoM4.6 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yeah.... I dont like that not one bit. I wish that they would hurrry up and lay out more help for returning players who dont know about things that have changed. I can also help u restore your emblems Bubble.

  • I wonder what percentage of people only come to the forums to complain about people taking stuff they leave lying around. (After all this time, I can't believe anyone who reads the forums even sporadically is confused about this mechanic any longer.)

Maybe TS should send all players a mail message outlining the major points of the recent changes so that they at least know something is up. Although I suppose there's no way to cover things in enough detail that no one makes incorrect assumptions.

  •  well  i want to define "stealing" for those who think something wasn t  stolen.  stealing is taking something that doesn t belong to you.   that is something that happens everywhere,, and here is no exception. i have had things stolen large and small, it still is disconcerting when it happens here because this is our "happy place" . . sorry to hear of your loss Bubbles , its  like a loss of innocence, when it  occurs here.  it s painful to have to realize that there are jerks here., but roll with the punches, you just have to be mindful, and work a bit more at thinking the best of others. most of the Gltchen are like yourself, kind and good, and friendly..[most] is the operant word here.

  • Sorry to hear about this Bubbles :(

Unfortunately, most players know that home streets are public so people sort of use them as free stuff dumps or rubbish dumps. As such, most people doesn't think anything of taking stuff from home streets, as they probably assumed you didn't want it. There was unlikely to have been any malice on their part.

  • A lot of people have set up rummage sales / trading posts / free-cycle spaces on the streets in front of their homes.  I try to be a good neighbor and therefore use these only when they are clearly labelled by note or gnome.  I usually assume anything else in these spaces is something wanted by or gifted to the person living in the house on the street.  I do make use of the resources available on these streets, since they are designed for public access, and expect that others will use the street in front of my home the same way.

For those of you trying to define stealing, TS has defined as "public" any object for which the menu allows "pick up" as an option, so the action that the OP has described is not stealing but the taking of a public resource, even though it was made public accidentally.  However, as I have belabored in many other threads, TS has made the security options for objects too complicated, and keeps changing them, and does not provide any useful help to the users in game, so I sympathize with OP for the confusion and unhappiness that TS has allowed to happen such cases.

  • I'm glad that folks have offered to replace the emblems!

I don't know if putting the onus on TS to update players after long absences is a good idea- the update threads and feed are a great first stop for players who either play every day, once a month or once in a blue moon.

  • TS is absolutely where the responsibility lies.  Once a set of game features is complex enough to cause constant confusion, and if you read the forums and watch Live Help, it is obvious that this applies, it is up to the game designers to implement a simple help or information function to ensure that a gamer has correct information for making decisions.  If the underlying data keeps changing, they are responsible for keeping the help function current.  At that point RTFM applies, but until then, asking the users to try and find this kind of information by reading the forums, checking the blog, searching the FAQ, and asking Guides who don't always know is *NOT* a system.
Posted 7 months ago by KhaKhonsu Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Mereret, I don't think that they are responsible for that in beta.  Once the game is relaunched I'd agree with all of your points.
Posted 7 months ago by Sloppy Ketchup Subscriber! | Permalink
  • ouch, that sucks...but yea, anything you leave outside your house (even on the street) is fair game...leave the important stuff inside for sure.

  • TS is not responsible in any way, shape, or form for glitches being irresponsible enough with their things as to leave them unattended on a public street. (Honestly, who takes their moving box outside their house to open it and just walks away?!?!?!)

This was a topic when I first started playing Glitch back in Oct.'11 and has been a CONSTANT refrain on the forums the entire time since. There is not one single attentive glitch that has been here more than a few weeks that doesn't know that loads of folks leave tons of crap on their streets for anyone to help themselves to,8/ and that stuff left on public streets disappears in short order. Is it any wonder if a passerby found your stuff, assumed you were purging and didn't need to waste time selling yourself so helped themselves? Why would you assume malicious intent?? Perhaps it was - but do you really know?

The constant refrain of 'stealing' things that are left in a public space is just as annoying to just as many glitches as I am sure it is to hear this not being labeled as 'stealing' is to the those with a different opinion. TS has stated repeatedly that your street is public - treat it as such at all times. Many changes are happening very fast in beta - deal with it. Wanna keep your valuables safe? Keep it off the public streets! It is: So simple. So easy. So sensible. Instead of constantly bemoaning that people don't perceive things as you do, how about adapting your game play to account for things you find distressful in order to remove that stress? That said, please come to my street and help yourself to anything available (assuming the 'thieves' have left anything available).

[Love ya MoM4.5, even if we disagree. *peanut-butter fingerprints on something old and delicate*]

  • The Help/Information systems needed to make a good game experience are as much in need of beta testing as every other aspect of the game, perhaps even more.  I think we've seen plenty of movement forward in these features, given that the map now indicates where you have and haven't been, and the encyclopedia now indicates skills and achievements that you do and do not have.  Live Help was another major way of addressing these issues, but it still has its limitations.  The fact that the population of the game is currently locked due to TS working on the Tutorials is also a step in that direction.  I think the privacy/security features of objects and locations are still an area in need of major attention.

  • If it is on YOUR STREET to me that does not make it fair game for anyone,   no one should take something that is not theirs,  now if it is a public street that would be different,  but like I said if it is your street it has your name on it not theirs,  so if someone takes something off your street they are really rude people  with no respect for  other peoples property and I consider that stealing.
Posted 7 months ago by Emerald Fern Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Emerald it's not your street as in full ownership.  It is just your home street with the added bonus that you've been given permission by TS to cultivate to your design.

I like to look at it like this.  It is 'Your Home's' Street.  Just the street where your home has been dumped/located.  No different than the old housing block streets.  We just have the added bonus of being able to do more with it than we could in the housing blocks.

  • @Bubbles, I have a couple more emblems to send you too but will have to wait now until the game comes back on-line.  They're currently plopped on my floor by the front door..I hope the piggies don't eat them...sure their feeders will have run out by the time the game comes back on-line.

  • RAWR thanks Abby, darling. Not sure how I missed that!!  Bubbles, did you get your stuff back?  Are you missing any replacements still?
Posted 7 months ago by Innie✿, Obviously Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @ Arabesque,  if it is not my street why does it have my name on it,  I wouldn't come on your street and take things that you leave there,   why can't we not have some respect for others.  I think it is really sad that some people feel they have to take things from other people.   It takes the fun out of the game.
Posted 7 months ago by Emerald Fern Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Emerald, I understand you don't like how the game has been made in this way but the fact is the street on which your home is based, your home's street is not owned by you.  It's just the road where your house has been placed.  This is why it is public.  I do understand that people want to believe it to be otherwise but what I just typed is just the fact of the matter.

If I leave something on my home's street I expect it to be taken.  I know that the home's street is public so I leave stuff out on occasion because they are things I don't need and I know eventually someone passing through will pick them up.   That's a bonus to me personally.

  • It could help, too, to think of the phrase "Minkey's home street" as purely prepositional, showing a relationship between me, my home and the street.  It can mean it is the street I live on, it can mean it is the street my house is situated on but, as we know, it is not a street I have a lock for.  Kind of like our home town's or block's in real life.  We live there but so do others.

I also would like to know that items I set down would be stuck there, so I could forget about things and not worry they'll go missing.  But, then there would be no option for leaving things out for other players to pick up.  I like that I can leave a random kindness on the ground for a random stranger.  I just try really hard not to forget to pick up anything I want to keep that I may have set down.

  • Dr. Babycat's home street is a public street where Dr. Babycat's house is located. It is no different than the 4300 block of Mangane Gaps quarter, where Dr. Babycat's previous house was located. That was also public, it just was named after its resident. On the new streets the sole resident gets to design the appearance but they are still public, as TS has said time and time again. If one would like to prevent other glitches from helping themselves to one's things it would be prudent to keep such things in one's house and not leave them lying about on public thoroughfares.
