Outdoor Piggie Feeders

Problem: I have a herd of piggies on my street. Whenever I drop grain (usually 100-200 grain total in several small piles)  to feed my pigs, often when I come back to nibble, this grain is missing (usually the next game day). I know that grain is a low value item that most people would not pick up, but it happens almost every game day and piggies don't usually eat that quickly (as seen by the days when the grain is NOT stolen).

Solution: I would like to see Pig Feeders changed to act like Gnomes. Able to be dropped in front of my house to feed the piggies (with the RHK skill), but not removable by other Glitches. This will allow me to not loose pigs from starvation because another Glitch keeps stealing the grain.

  • I like this idea.  Would be happy if this capability was added to gnomes too.  RHK skill required of course.

  • It would be awesome to have the ability to make outdoor piggie feeders (or for them to simply be placed there by devs).  It would be even better if its upkeep was a community affair.

You know how some places, in real life, have outdoor koi ponds with those koi food dispensers? People go and buy a handful of koi feed for about a quarter or so and then can feed the koi with them.  What if something similar was put in place with a public piggie feeder? People can spend a small amount of currants at the feeder and "refill" it by so many points.  Would be a great way to involve everyone in caring for the public piggies.

  • +1
This will keep my outdoor pigs in the firebogs alive and happy.

  • I would love this. I think it'd be great to start neighborhood gardens/parks, where everyone on a street pitches in. I've seen that in some of the Groddle Meadow neighborhoods that have patches for trees, but in most neighborhoods there's no way to sustain livestock outside of dropping piles of food and hoping nobody comes by to pick it up.

Stoot mentioned at one point that there were going to be housing improvements coming, but it'd be wonderful if there were neighborhood improvements, too. Things like: piggy feeders that look like decorative shrubs, water features, lamp posts, perhaps even small community herb/crop gardens.

  • I would like to see more game features for community action.  This would do that.  I like the idea.

  • +1 for outdoor trough - only usable by actual piggies and not glitchy gluttons :D

  • Oh, come on. :P I make a similar post and no one says anything. :P

My thoughts are here, basically: http://www.glitch.com/forum/ideas/10131/

  • Why do you need piggies outside your house?  Either put them on the public street, or in your yard.

Probably because your thread title didn't mention about piggies.  XD

  • "Why do you need piggies outside your house?  Either put them on the public street, or in your yard."

At least for me, I'm thinking for the public streets, not within the housing quarter. :p

  • @Pming I guess so! I guess Glitchen just love animal stuff :P

  • Keep this bumped, btw, I want the piggy feeder lock feature :)

  • @Liza I've noticed glitchens have a tendency to go a little hog-wild. :p

  • Pigs are very important to the global economy. :P I have 50,000 currants in meat at home, so. xD

  • Of course players are picking up dropped grain.  Do you realize how few players realize that pigs die if they are not fed?  (And sometimes even if they are?)

I'm not sure why you are trying to maintain a herd of piggies outside of your house either.  You paid for a yard, not the area outside the house.  Put pigs in the street where they can get to trees and they will be perfectly fine.

  • I wouldn't be at all shocked that many new players didn't know about the importance of feeding piggies. I certainly didn't until a few days ago. I don't recall the tutorial ever making a point about why we must keep piggies fed; I think that is something important for the devs to include in the tutorial. Ever since learning, however, I've made it a point to try and drop a few beans or cherries for piggies I pass who have no trees. :)

  • I don't think dropping food for public piggies is an effective strategy, Vorpalcheese.  Feeding the public piggies you're concerned about by hand will work much better.  Food lying around *will* be picked up by passing glitchen.

To the OP: piggies in a housing quarter are public piggies, not "your" piggies (even if you placed them), and people have no way of knowing that grain on the floor of the housing quarter was placed for piggie feeding, as opposed to for example being dropped from a Fecundity Powder, or abandoned for the benefit of passing noobs.  Having house-anchored piggy feeders in quarters seems like a fine idea, but in their absence, people who take grain you've left out in the street are not "stealing".  (NB: I do leave things in place that I can tell have been placed for a purpose, I'm not one of the "Oh, this is your art project? YOINK!" types.  But people really can't always tell.)

  • @Fnibbit, I'm not talking about dropping food on the ground.  If you read back over my initial post, you will see I'm talking about a public feeder/trough for public piggies out in the streets that players can voluntarily refill, either via small currant donations to refill a "meter" or by depositing appropriate food in there directly.  Players should not be able to take anything from there, and wild/public piggies would be able to feed there.  I'm really not sure where you are getting this other idea...

  • "ever since learning, however, I've made it a point to try and drop a few beans or cherries for piggies I pass who have no trees."  that was what I was responding to with your name on.

The central idea in this thread, I think, makes sense, though I don't feel strongly about it.

  • Ah, that.  Yeah, my focus is more on the central topic, not peripheral information. :p

  • Didn't see this post, made my own, having the same problem.

Honestly, in one of the more expensive districts, why is anyone picking up the grain we're leaving around? Just squeeze the chickens - you'll get exp for it, too.

  • I like this idea and tried putting a newly bought piggy feeder and placed it outside my house and even left the Gnome a message not to steal it but after 1 day boom it's gone hehehe.
