Racial inclusivity

There is not a non-subscriber skin tone available that approximates the afro-descended phenotype. Since Ur isn't Earth, I wouldn't complain, but there is a light beige, a light yellow, and a golden brown available to non-subscribers, which seems to approximate all common racial groups except the afro-descended. (no black hair color choice either, but that's sort of secondary to me)

You guys didn't do it on purpose, but racism today mostly takes the form of unconscious biases and prejudices, so I think it's important to be racially inclusive when you can. I want to make it clear that this isn't a sensitive person being offended, but an academic invested in changing the world, little bits at a time.

Full disclosure: I racially identify as white, I was raised in suburban East Tennessee, and I live in a modest means, predominantly afro-descended neighborhood.

  • Really, you think this is true?  Have you seen my Glitch?

(my bad, so sorry!!! Missed the non-subscriber.)

  • She mentioned the need for more options for non-subscribers...

  • there's no non-subscriber option to match MY skin type. i did not think it was race based.

you simply can't get a non-subscriber glitch to be eastern-european descended pasty white gets-sunburned-through-clothes. i'm not even sure if there's a subscriber option for that.

i looked at the skin tones available to me and thought: ah. apparently we are not meant to look like realistic humans.

  • Realistic or not, I *would* like darker skin color/tone options for non-subscribers.

  • This has been discussed before.
I think the consensus is that Sliders should be available for Eye, Hair and Skin tone seeing as this is a game of IMAGINATION ...it should allow for many more differences in each  and every glitch.I think we can all agree that this isnt as much a matter of race but instead a matter of FUN!

  • I like the idea of sliders. How about a compromise:

8 color options as standard (of various racially-stereotyped colors), and subscribers get a color wheel allowing them to choose any color they like.

  • I'm really against limiting free players to racially stereotyped colors.

Why shouldn't they have choices like green and blue and purple? Fortunately, I don't see TS going in the direction of taking away something that's already available for free players.

  • This game is being played by humans. Human society is highly race conscious (En Vogue songs notwithstanding). Yes, it's obvious that the skin tones are not really meant to be human race-based, but there are 3 in the nonsubscriber series that, to me anyway, seem to approximate caucasian (default beige), far east asian (classic yellow), and hispanic (pollen orange). Note I'm not talking realism here, but approximation, symbolic representation if you will. It's awesome if you can just disregard any racial representation there, but not everyone will.

Anywho, this is a very small thing, easily fixed with the slider idea... which btw is awesome way beyond racial inclusivity. :D

  • I see a full spectrum  in the free player options: red (original pink), orange (pollen orange), yellow (classic yellow), green (macha green), blue (murf blue), violet (french mallow), plus black (plain plain[gray] ) and brown (beige).

I don't know how much less 'racial' you can get if providing a literal rainbow of options is somehow 'not inclusive'.

  • Racial markers are a touchy subject in many parts of the world, in many different ways. I would agree that I would love some darker non-subscriber skintones of various hues purely due to my own aesthetics, but I really...don't think forcing racial markers on free players is a good idea for so many reasons. I kind of dig the wide color choices, tbh.

  • I agree 100% with LaLa.

Except I'm black and am very aware of underrepresentation of my skin tone in game genres that I love.

    But meh. I can wait.

  • i guess they could make the light beige, light yellow* and golden brown subscriber only.

make one of the red variants available to non-subscribers as compensation. maybe a different blue or green as well.

we're all pretty much muppets anyway.

the color slider has been suggested many times and repeatedly discounted as the vanity system has been revised. don't bet on it showing up now.

*tho really that doesn't look at all  like any skin color i've ever seen, asian people aren't *actually* yellow, despite certain 60 year old comic book depictions.
