Selling Broken Goods at Auction

Right now there is no way to tell what state the goods in auction. I just bought a fancy pick to give to my wife's character and when it arrived it was busted, with 0 health. Live and learn, I guess. You should be able to see the health of an object like that when you're bidding on it.

  • Agreed. It's been discussed a couple of times and I believe it's been promised.

At one point we had the same issue with Firefly Jars (you couldn't tell if they were full or empty). They've been changed now so I think you can be fairly certain that the changes for tools will be coming "soon" (*)

(*) "soon" is a Tiny Speck word that might mean "this afternoon" but unfortunately might mean "when we've finished everything else" - usually it means something in-between. Yeah, they're vague like that sometimes.

  • I was able to fix it with my Tinkering, but it was a real dick move to sell a busted item for almost full price.

  • Thought you could sell it as if it was a full tool to the vendor, even if it was broken.  In the absence of knowing what state a tool is in, what would you suggest to price a broken tool?  I'd assume more than 70% of full price - otherwise, why bother auctioning it when they can just sell it to the vendor!

  • It was priced at 999 in the auction, one less than the price to buy at a vendor. There wasn't a vendor around, so I figured what the Hell and got rooked. If it had at least half of its health left, I wouldn't be complaining, but that was uncalled for.

  • I think we should be able to see the value of anything that is being sold.

  • @Billy: I mean, what would you prefer it to be priced at?

  • @Lara - Actually, a vendor will only pay a pittance for a broken or mostly-used tool. There's an exploit to mostly work around it, but if you try to sell back a broken pick, you're not going to get anywhere near 70% of its purchase price.

  • @Tally, neat.  Any idea how much?  I assume that's around what one ought to price a broken tool in the auctions.

  • Yeah, I was going to sell my broken tinkertool at auction, but since there was no way to indicate that it was broken, I didn't think it was fair. I sold it to a vendor instead.

  • I sold a couple broken tools- but at about half of the original price- since I figured others could fix them and make a small profit when I couldn't. but no, I wouldn't sell a broken tool near the regular price. That's just mean.

  • @Lara - Well, my fancy pick is at 38/200, or about 19% of its life left. The vendor I took it to offered 246 currants, or about 25% of its purchase price. I'm not sure how exactly the formula works, but I would imagine a totally broken pick wouldn't get more than 150 currants from a vendor. So perhaps a broken tool should be priced at about 15% of its vendor purchase price?

You could also look at the energy required to repair it - the game seems to equate 1c with 1 energy. My pick (with Tinkering IV under my belt) would require 140 energy to repair to full health. So, if I paid more than 860 currants for it (1000c full price - 140 currants for repair) I would be overpaying. Of course, this varies depending on your tinkering skill, and there's no way to figure for that in the auctions... I think the vendor price is a better way to determine it.

  • As Snazzlefrazz said, this issue has been brought up so many times and is one of those things that is so obviously in need of fixing, that I am sure they're working on it. All we can do in the meantime is be patient, and expect to be ripped off now and then. LOL
