New music in Firebogs.....Um...

Ok, the new music in the firebogs is not good.  I am not sure what was intended, but I think it missed.  The "wayo" over and over and over and over and over and over, reached the point of making me so anxious that I logged out of the game. I went away, and came back, started walking around again, got anxious, almost logged out again, then realized it was the music wigging me out.

I almost muted the game when the street switching noise was implemented (and thank you so much for fixing that and making it better!), but I never did.  I have no officially muted the game.  That makes me sad, because the music that was here before was SO MUCH better.

And when will Hell have its music back?  Please tell me you arent changing that, too!

  • I miss the hell music like crazy. It was one of my favorite parts of hell (though nothing beats the conga lines. Blanky sure knows how to lead one in Hell!)

Like Innie, I find there is something uncomfortable about the new tunes. At first I thought "Oh cool, this really sets the mood" and after exploring a few streets I had to get out of there. :/

Now it's muted while I'm exploring the new music areas.

  • Had to log in even though I don't have time to play just to hear it (I have music on mute all the time since I multitask while glitching and it gets distracting) and...I like it! It's insane :D

Although it is uncomfortable on the headphones, probably because of the left-right-left changes and the sharp 'pop' the...um...I don't know my instruments well enough, metallic drum? makes. On speakers, I can't tell the difference so much.

(Disclaimer: I am a serious Kate Bush fan. :P That may explain it.)

  • Beware, nerdiness lies ahead:

I am actually in love with the new firebogs music. Before transferring and changing my major to psychology, I was actually a music major with concentrations in ethnomusicology and composition, so to hear that unique region of Ur finally receive its own unique musical culture is so exciting for me. I can understand how the sound effects of the frogs and toads and crickets, etc. (whatever they actually are) could get on some people's nerves, but what becomes more apparent to me is what sound like influences of Southern U.S. folk music and oddly enough, Indian classical music. The slide on the guitar, the melismas in the vocals, and even the timbre of the percussion make it sound like Punjab bluegrass. It's completely unique within this world and it makes the diversity of Ur seem that much more vibrant.

Again, I can get how some of it might sound annoying, but for myself, I'm a big fan.

  • i LOVE the new firebog music!!!

it's just my considered professional opinion, though...

  • I love it! Its brilliant, like every piece of music in Glitch. The variations are superbly well thought and executed. The voices are a great addition, and used in quite an original way. I like the "ethnic vibe" in it, it's good for the spirit of the bog areas.

(Having said all that, Innies's second post had me laughing really hard. I don't agree with you, Innie, but I have to congratulate you for your sense of humor and comedy talents!)

  • Ok, maybe its the headphones with it.

Can they maybe get rid of it going from right to left to right to left.....I am not sure, but something is seriously bad with headphones on.  On my laptop speakers its not as bad.  Too bad I dont really play over there, though.

Hehehe, thanks Ximenez.  I figured I was probably the only one seriously annoyed....I do want to shoot that bird, though.

  • I really like the new music. It's kinda creepy at first on certain streets, but after a while it really got me.

  • I bet the headphones are a big part of it--There was a song I really liked that had a whispering part that switched from side to side, and it gave me shivers when I listened to it on my headphones, but didn't affect me at all when I listened to it on the stereo.

Actually, I'm kind of curious what you might think of it after hearing Lita's description of it.  I used to kind of dislike Asian art, until I took a course on Asian art history in college.  Now I get it.  Where I used to look at all the blank white spaces in Japanese painting and think "Ok, dullsville," now I can look at it and see the connection to Taoism, and the depiction of mountainous, foggy landscapes.  I think sometimes when we dislike art or music, it helps to learn about it.  Not that we should all have to take classes on music theory, or anything!  :)  I'm just kind of curious to know if it affects your listening.

  • Hmm I never even thought about the headphones being what did it. Note to self: try without headphones when you get home.

  • Avery, I now just pull my headphones off and let them lay on my shoulders when in the firebogs. Not bad that way.  Now that i listen to it more, the woman sounds like a voodoo priestess doing a ritual.  Is she calling the bird? And why is that guy swinging on that rope? Is he trying to save that poor woman from the bird?  OMG, is the bird actually THE ROOK??

    SAVE HER DOOD!

  • I usually mix on speakers, but I gave the headphones a go, and there is definitely a spot where the side to side can be paired down!  Sorry Innie!  Hilarious interpretation!  I love that you gave it a second try!

Annoying people is the last thing on earth we want to do with the ambient music! Super relieved that this forum isn't full of everybody having the same experience.  There will be more variation soon!

LitaPie, glad you picked up on trying to provide create a sonic culture for each of the landscapes.  The main music up till now is really only meant for Groddle, so eventually that will be the case.

I'll probably come back and re-mix and augment this stuff, taking note that the "wheo's" and panning etc. might be overbearing at times.

Making music that is meant to be played continuously without being annoying is quite a challange!

  • I bet it's a challenge!

Thanks for your post, Danny, and most of all for your music.
Posted 15 months ago by Ximenez Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Danny, I love that you and the rest of the composers are paying attention to that. And I can totally believe that seamless music is a challenge to produce. That's why 99.999999% of the music in the world has a beginning and an end LOL.

I have the utmost respect for your entire team. The more I play the game and experience different environments, the more I realize how much of an impact music has on Glitch's gameplay. I've played it on mute for various reasons and it's just not the same for me. Maybe it's because I'm such a musical person, but I honestly believe it's the attention to detail that's being paid to not only the ambient music, but the interactive sound effects, that make Glitch gel together and make it all the more believable that this world really could exist.

It's also inspired me to get back into composing, too. So if nothing else, thank you for that.

I want you to know that your post has added to my love of Glitch even more.  *giant bear hug*

  • danny, i love your environmental music. i know what a challenge that is, and i have been impressed right along with your work.

did you make recent changes to the uralia music? i think i heard either new voicings or new balance (something bassoon-y?) and it's very nice.
Posted 15 months ago by flask Subscriber! | Permalink
  • i like the new firebog music but i don't like it for firebog.

it's a little bit too "down on the bayou" and firebog always struck me as a more mystical, mysterious place.
Posted 15 months ago by striatic Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Actually, stri, your evaluation isn't half bad, at least from an ethnomusical standpoint.

Bogs are quite similar in structure to bayous - both are lowlying, flat bodies of water and are both classified as types of marshes. The difference is that bogs are much more acidic in content, which in combination with dead plant material, eventually leads to the production of coal - hence all the jellisac and peat bogs and fuel cells you make from the natural resources in Glitch firebogs. That aside, to say the music sounds like "down on the bayou" is actually saying that the music sounds similar to folk music from Creole, Cajun, or Acadian cultures of southern Louisiana or Mississippi. And since bogs and bayous are both marshlands, the fact that it sounds that way to you isn't altogether a bad thing, and might have been what the composers were aiming for.

    -end recurrent nerdy moment-

  • that's it. Glitch, I demand pirogues for the firebogs. How are we to get around without a pirogue? And where are the chaoui to steal the things we drop, and the cocodrie to randomly attack? eyou mes copains les zozos?!

But, having been raised on the bayou and with many musicians in the family, one would say that it reminds one of our native music not at all. Far too peaceful. ;)

  • I super dig it too, but I have to turn it up waaay loud to really hear it.  So it's ok with me.

  • ^^Come to think of it, I also turn it up way loud!  ;-D
Posted 15 months ago by Reba Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Some of the things mentioned have been adjusted in the mix to be a little more subtle.  Esp that panning effect.  Should be making it into the game very soon.

Reba and Nanookie, the ambient music is mixed pretty low, probably too low.  We need to wait for a tool to be built before we go in and readjust all the levels, but it will happen.  I thought for the time being it was better to error on the side of too quiet as opposed to too loud!  Do you find it quieter than the other ambient music?
Posted 15 months ago by Danny Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Danny - I wholeheartedly agree with your decision to err on the side of caution with levels.

Your compositions are all beautiful and the Rube music is fun fun fun and everything just works so well!!  Thank you *so* much!!

To answer your question, I *do* think the bog music is not as loud as the music in Groddle Forrest, but not by much, I feel like I want to turn it up when I enter the bog on my Macbook just a couple of clicks to make them about equal.  I went back and forth between the two areas this morning to actively listen since you asked.

The frogs and ambient noise of the bog sounds louder to me than the actual music -  especially at the top before the crossfade/s*... I don't know if that was what you intended (and you probably have a lot more than one or more crossfades going on*); personally I would prefer to hear the music at a higher level and the frogs etc at a slightly lower level, but I don't want to mess with your artistry by telling you that.  And I don't know whether that's what you've already re-worked, that's just my opinion here.  ;-)  And I really hope I didn't overstep any bounds by saying so.*

And I have not listened to it with headphones or with my external speakers (my house is in transition and my macbook pro is in the shop) so today, I've just heard it on my macbook.  So, as we all know, my experience listening will be very different from Innie's and most other people hearing it.

    Thanks again!!

*edited to add - especially at the top before the crossfade/s...
                           - (and you probably have a lot more than one or more crossfades going on*)
                           -  And I really hope I didn't overstep any bounds by saying so.

p.s.  Just out of geeky curiosity with a combined love for the game - If you have the time, would you please start a thread  about your process and what kinds of equipment and instruments you used to work on this game?  I'm especially interested in whether you had a team or did it all yourself, whether you played the game first and then became inspired for a feel or each area, or whether you were there with the renderings and design team before much or any code was written or a little of both and which software programs (and plug-ins) and outboard gear you used.  (Can you tell I've never worked on a game before?  ;-)  My experience is mostly with live events and some post production.)  Again, it's brilliant work!!  Thank you so much!!

Edit on 10-1-11 to add that I think the lowering of the firebog music is an issue only because the mix of sound effects vs. ambient music is now different than any other area... so when I'm actually spending time in the area, I have to go up to the controls to change them and then  change them back when I'm leaving the area.  I know it will be fixed, but wanted to mention it.  (I got my mac book pro back and played with it and noticed it takes more effort than just a couple of clicks on the mac to turn it up... not a big deal AT ALL in the greater scheme of things, especially since I know it's temporary.)  Thanks again!!

I think that was one of the things I brought down.  Also, I should be able to pull the music some day and master it properly.  Btw, the Rube music was made by a composer named Xavier, as well as the music you hear in Hell.

I'd love to tell stories about the process!  Maybe I'll get a blog up.  Mostly to tell about the great people that have been involved.

Thanks everybody!  It will get better!
