Printing Press

I don't know about other glitches, but at the dawn of each new age one of the earlier skills that always seemed vital to get was penpersonship. This was in spite of the fact that there's really not a ton to do with it, intellectual superiority notwithstanding.

Now I'm a skilled tinkerer and machinist, and need to advertise for a new community machine shop
*cough*Beat Blocks*cough*

Point being, why is there nothing like a printing press? We have machines, we have signs, this technology has never gotten the Reese's mix on? A simple set-up could just duplicate a note with paper and an ink resource.

This could even be a chance to expand the written word. Add the ability to add basic imprints of camera pictures, multiple pages and other tidbits and suddenly there'll be a huge resurgence (surgence?) in note exchange.

  • Do you mean to create multiple notes at once and then litter them all over Ur as "advertising"? If so, -1 to that idea.

  • I guess if you consider the spreading of literacy litter. I wouldn't personally, but It could be your view.

I'm not trying to say Janitch hates freedom or anything, by any means, of course.

  • Not sure how to respond to "advertising = literature", but sad face smiley seems insufficient ;)

Freedom is very much a love-and-hate thing; we love freedom for ourselves and others who like us have good taste and hate freedom for those with bad taste.

  • We could have newspaper stands in one or two specific location to distribute players publications, like Printing Press or other written words :)

Also, a player could be able to subscribe a publication of another player (I think of new skills like editor, writer)

This multicast ability can go wrong, as in spam or unexpected mail, but you can allways unsubscribe the publication. Maybe a Communication Department would authorize or not the publications but that sounds tricky...

  • I think a printing press may be best saved for when we can bind notes into books and booklets (and newspapers!  YES!).  That way, there would be an iMg reward for clumping the notes together into one discrete bundle, to somewhat counter act the urge to spread them separately around Ur.

In any case, while this is definitely not something you can track easily, I've personally seen more poetry and poetic prose than adverts on notes.  There are plenty of adverts, for sure, but I've got another idea...

The Projectorinski Note Reaper(TM).  You put it on the ground, press a button, and it trundles across the ground like a giant cubimal (it's about the size of any other machine, and looks a little like Trisor), picking up any notes in it's way and putting them into a bundle, or book.  When it gets to the end of its range of movement, it returns to your inventory, leaving the newly bound book on the ground where it last resided!

With the addition of the Projectorinski Note Reaper, you can then do something absurd with the printing press, too.  You can make it so that the printing press just spews notes all over in a radius around it.  Which would be hilarious.

Janitch, unfortunately for your argument, good taste is relative.  But your dissenting voice is a good challenge, so please do keep it up as you're so inspired!  Thank you.

I do like .gatto's idea for self regulating print.  The printing press just makes published material, which must be subscribed to.  So you only get a number of copies equal to the number of subscribers, and it goes to their butlers or mailboxes in the form of an attachment, not the street.
