Browser really slows down when using Chrome

After finishing a session with Glitch, I frequently have to restart my browser in order to get things going again.  It gets really sluggish and difficult to use.  I currently use Google Chrome on a Mac.  All updates have been installed.  I can try a different browser until then; it might be a Chrome thing.

  • IMO it's mostly a Chrome thing coupled by Flash being 'leaky'. It gets worse if you've got more than one site containing Flash. It's gotten much, much better over the last few weeks, and gets better with every test. The TinySpeck folks have been working really hard to keep up with the antics of Chrome (I can't imagine a 6 week version cycle is easy on any programmer, which is Chome's pattern), and I bet we'll keep seeing improvements as beta continues.

Choice of browser is as varied as the players. I change from Chrome to Firefox and back again during a typical test session, can't bring myself to load IE though. I prefer the full-screen view that Chrome offers. My 'walk' tends to get stuck frequently in Firefox, which I find more annoying than reloading every hour or so (yes, I'm aware some people were having to reload every 30-45 minutes).

  • Glitch crashed my browser (Safari) three times yesterday morning. It's not usually as bad as crashing, but things do start to grind to a halt. So I used one browser for Glitching (Safari) and another for everything else (Firefox).

  • I too, have switched to Firefox. I've a feeling it's got something to do with the way Flash is implemented in Chrome - unlike Firefox, Chrome has an integrated Flash plugin that's 'sandboxed', meaning that while it is safer, Flash apps like Glitch have less memory to run.

I should note, though, that the game gets progressively slower the longer I'm running it regardless of browser. I usually have to reload the game every once in two hours or so.

That sounds more like problems with Flash's garbage collection rather than Chrome.  (She says as a project manager who works with flash programmers & tests their code - not a programmer herself.)

  • Do you think 'they' might switch to HTML5 from flash?

  • I've been trying them all and so far Chrome is working best for me.  A few weeks or so back, it was awful, crashing all the time but it's gotten better.  I tried FF4, but it was taking 2 minutes or so to load new areas, I was pulling my hair out!  This last test, I tried Safari, and somehow it kept leaving the game, getting the Wait You almost won the game screen!  It kept happening to a friend of mine on Safari also, so not sure what that's all about.

I did get the latest Chrome now, 11 something, and it seems to be doing okay...

  • Accy, they've made it clear that there is no plan to switch to HTML5 for assorted reasons (which I've read but not understood because, Dammit, Jim! I'm a doctor, not a web developer!*).

    *I'm not actually a doctor.

  • FF takes sometime to load new areas at first, but after a few loads it progressively gets better, because Glitch can then reuse downloaded world elements. So if Chrome lets you down, switch to FF and sweat through the first few slow reloads. :) It's fast as hell now, and I don't regret switching.

  • I prefer using Chrome.  This last test I was stuck for 5 hours.  I started with Chrome, went to FireFox, emptied cache & cookies, rebooted, yada yada yada.  I finally switched to Opera.  That got me in for 45 minutes when I got stuck again.  After three hours i quit and went to bed.  The next day Opera was the only browser that would work for me.

  • I'm using Chrome on a Win7 64-bit machine and though it does slow down after a few hours of play, I had the same experience with Firefox.  Otherwise I didn't notice any other problems with Chrome.

  • I've noticed that with Chrome, when Flash dies you have to kill every chrome instance before it will come back. FF simply lets you reload the window to overcome the flash crash.

Given the crappy stability of flash, this makes Chrome a rather poor experience if you have any other tabs open.
