Brain Capacity - Buy it in bulk everyone!

My last four cards...

3 capacity - 120,000 iMG  - passed on this one
5 capacity - 200,000 iMG - passed on these too
1 capacity - 40,000 iMG.  I bought this one becasue it was more affordable
3 capacity - 240,000 iMG ?!?  This was my next draw.

I looked at my logs and brain capacity cost seems to increase exponentially.  I apparently just lost 160,000 iMG by not knowing to buy the 5 capacity card.  *cry*  I only got 1M points so that's a loss of 16% of my iMG from a non-obvious mistake.

Looking at my logs I had one increase after 4 points, the next after 3.  Buy your brain capacity in bulk, folks!

  • There were many problems! The biggest/most obvious was the 16,000 vs 160,000 typo, but there were others: the tiering increases were too steep, the prices were probably a little too high, we didn't think of how to do the bulk discounting until we had already released, an oversight in the rules meant the intended cap of 60 was not enforced … and, most of all, we didn't explain them well enough (or get the new skills page up, which would have helped).

So, it is quite likely that on Monday we're going to refund ALL brain capacity upgrade purchases are revert people back to where they were after conversion. Details to follow, but in the meantime, don't get too deep into the analysis of the numbers :)

  • Thanks for post, stoot. I've purchased BC to reduce the learning time on the new Trans Rad II skill (from 10d to about 5 days including rl time), but if I have to start that skill over, no biggie. Better to have the BC problems worked out now rather than later, which is the whole point of beta anyway.

And a big shout out to Lucille and all the folks who worked the numbers and experimented and provided ts useful feedback.

  • The whole thing gives me a headache.  Thanks Stoot!

  • Thank you, Stoot! I will be glad if they cost way less than 160k, cause that's a huge amount of work to get 160k iMG to just get only +1 brain capacity.

  • Thanks for the update, Stoot!  A rollback sounds really fair.

Is there some way to make it so there isn't a large advantage to be gained from waiting to purchase brain capacity until you have multiple +3 or +5 brain capacity cards at your current tier in your hand?  It feels really fiddly.  Also tiers every 3-4 points means it's costly to ever buy anything other than a +5. I would suggest making only +1 brain capacity cards if there is still steep tiering so the most players can buy is +2 into the next tier before their cards are recalculated.  (I think +2 is right...)  We will worry less trying to optimize and this is looking to be one of the more expensive uses for iMG.

  • This is good news. Although I'm sort of sorry to hear about a cap.

  • Also bummed about the cap but not about the re-pricing!

Especially as the new "not double" prices appeared it did look like a headache in trying to figure out what was worth buying etc.

*will wait patiently for 2nd roll out*

  • Please don't let there be  a cap for BC... it ruins the fun of increasing brain size so it takes less time to learn skills :( but still a good update either way :)

  • Right now I have a +3 for 280000.

  • Just a heads up, Dev's:

The max brain capacity listed in the FAQ here says it's supposed to be 50.
    www.glitch.com/help/faq/#q156

I hope it's a typo and is in fact 60, so just wanted to let you know to change that too. :)

  • Thanks TomC for the variable price cards. Had I known this when I was spending all of my iMG up front I would have made MUCH different choices. None of that was explained with the change over to iMG

  • Snowpuff:

Luckily, you will get a 2nd chance.  TS is probably going to refund all your iMG on Monday, and take away all the Brain Capacity cards that you bought.

You will be able to make a better decision.  But notice that TomC's numbers are wrong for quite  a few reasons.  Don't use them to make your 2nd Chance decisions.

  • Oh yes they are expensive. my first +1 card was 10 k the last two +1 I purchased were 160k that's 60k more then it cost for my +5 two capacity cards earlier

  • Since they may be changing brain capacity and refunding stuff, I am not going to buy (yet) the card that has cropped up on my deck.

What I was wondering, though, is if you have all the skills except for a couple, is there really much point to increasing brain capacity? Or learning skill times?  Trying to think through an optimal upgrade strategy here.  I think buying upgrades that lets you earn more imagination and drops would be more useful in the short term.

  • TS has said that more skills are coming.  They added one new one last week.  As a strategy, I'd suggest picking up the skill learning cards for the kinds of skills you use the most, and wait til later to pick up learning cards for the ones you use the least.

  • I would also recommend taking a critical look at the entire skill tree.  Unlearning is easy and cheap.  Are you sick of gardening?  Why not forget it?   Only have cocktails to make Flaming Hubs?   Buy them instead.   Etc, etc.
