no increased time to learn 'better learning'

Instead of having you time increase to learn better learning skills after you have learnt a certain amount of new skills. Wouldn't it be more logical and very useful if 'better learning' were exempt from this penalty?

  • Agreed. The whole skill system is fraked up in regards to the time penalty.

  • Yeah I don't like it either. It forces you to make a choice to be as efficient as possible or have more fun in game. It's not a good choice.

  • There is a very good reason EVE Online, the game from which this game has taken its skill system, completely did away with the learning skills entirely. They were a bad idea and simply force the player to spend more time not having fun before they are allowed to have fun.

  • I think the only people to moan about this will be the people who didnt bother to take better learning before the penalty hit, I think its good how it is and forces you to plan ahead

  • although i think they should probably emphasise that the penalty exists and try and make sure new players know how important better learning is, i probably wouldnt have known if not for the beta and making this mistake

  • I agree with Toksyuryel. The Better Learning skills add nothing to the game, or more precisely enjoying the game. All it means, is that your forced to spend hours, days, to learn skills you don't really want to learn, rather then a skill that interests you and would have an impact on your gameplay. But if you DO choose to enjoy yourself and skip the Learning skills completely you are effectively damaging your skill progress in the future, so really, no matter what, its a lose-lose scenario.

  • It tells you this on the tool-tip description of each skill - if you are new to the game why would you choose skills without reading what they all are first anyway?

  • The cool thing about the hideously long time you may end up with for better learning is that you're forced to figure out other things to do. Yeah, it's starting to wear a little thin now, but it's forced me to think more about how I play the game.

By the time I got to BL5, it was a 7-day learning marathon. I don't know if I'd be able to handle it if it were even longer, though. :) I'm most of the way through now, and have a couple of days left to go. So I've been making stuff to donate to shrines, working on completionist badges, cooking and harvesting, chatting and helping people, working on street projects...  So while it's not the most "fun", it's given me a chance to muck around with other aspects of the game I might not pay as much attention to.

So I agree that beyond a certain point, learning the later BLs is kinda boring, but it's a chance to try other stuff while you're waiting for the skill to complete, and it means I get shortened learning times for my other skills in the long run. Short-term pain and all that.

  • The one complaint that I have is that it's never made clear in game what the penalty is for having a lot of skills.  I found on the forums that it's 3% per over the limit you are, but I still don't know if that is additive or multiplicative (so that if you are 10 skills over, is it (1+0.3*10) or (1+0.3)^10, but if it is multiplicative, then better learning has a very significant effect at the higher levels (over 50%, not just the 20% listed), which isn't made clear.

The system as implemented makes it significantly better to max out particular branches of the skill tree, so that you can get the more time consuming skills earlier on, and I think that's probably on purpose, but if that isn't properly explained, a lot of people are going to screw themselves without even realizing.

I'm fine with whatever mechanics they want to put in game so long as everything is transparent, and the (intended) consequences of the game design are clearly explained to new players.

  • The penalty is neither additive nor multiplicative, but rather compounding. So it's more severe than additive but less severe than multiplicative.
