Gas plant? Really?

I dunno who decided to kill the spice tree in Onto Parada and put a gas tree in instead, but I'm really curious about your motivations - is there anything in Glitch as useless as a gas tree?

(Seriously - once you do the first quest, then get the trophy for having all of them and the achievement for fiddling with all of them, do gases have any purpose at all? I store up lots of White Gas because it sells for the most and then just vendor it.)

  • "I store up lots of White Gas" ....... Ahhhhh - too easy :-)

(And I'd argue that wood tree's are even more useless than gas plants, but I love 'em anyway.)

But you're right... usefulness and frequency don't seem to correlate. I fail to see why there are over 350 bean trees when there's so little they're used for in quantity other than awesome stew.

  • I'm not the person who did it but gas plants are useful for a fair amount of things, especially seasoned beans. And currently there are less gas trees than anything except wood and paper trees.

(According to zoggish, there are NO wood trees on public streets. Eeeep. Sound like time to get the Grimssea Wood Tree Preserve another try.)

ETA: If you find the world imbalanced, do something about it. Learn botany and take control of Ur's ecosystem. The power is yours (and thousands of other Glitchen).

  • Lately street building projects have been calling for a vast amount of gas. So huge quantities are needed for that, at least. The one that planted this tree may have wanted it for that purpose. Plus, as mentioned, it is used as an ingredient for various things. Right now, blocks aren't terribly useful, but they will be in the future and some of them need gas.

  • I didn't replace that one, but egg seasoning and bean seasoning use up a huge amount of vapour (in all different forms)! I've been going through stacks of vapour the last few weeks!

  • I find gas plants useful in cooking and ingot rubbing, but it's also pretty easy to hoard a bunch of them.

  • Good to know that gas will actually have a use later. I hear that there might be a point in taking Botany now ... (since I have a "dark" house, seasoning beans for my own use has been worthless, I just tend my one Egg Plant, but if other players are interested in buying Seasoned Beans, that might be different).

  • P.S. to Snazzlefrazz - as for my storing up lots of gas, I plead no contest :)

  • Gas is helpful in making seasoned beans, and since vendors don't sell them players will need to be making them, and therefore needing gas trees more often then before... same with bubbles for seasoned eggs....

I planted two wood trees, one in Isalan Interval but I doubt it'll last long...

  • Seriously it is getting kind of rediculous. Not only have the spice trees taken over Ix, but they have taken over Kalavana. New streets are constantly popping up and require gas. The spice that is needed is very easy to find, but with people killing off the gas trees the new streets are going to be harder and harder to complete and taken even longer. Stop killing off the gas plants, there are plenty of spice trees around. We need gas!
Posted 14 months ago by Sethy Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Gas is also required to make seasoned chicken eggs, which will now be more needed as the vendors are not selling these eggs. So not useless, however I can see you might think this if you weren't playing with the seasoned items, or building a street.
Posted 14 months ago by Eldorian Subscriber! | Permalink
  • We need more places to put gas and spice. Preferably let them grow in a region that has bean and fruit trees since we have enough of those.
Posted 14 months ago by Nirosu Subscriber! | Permalink
  • There are a lot of spice trees in areas that grow them, but the majority of streets can not support spice trees.  I travel long distances to specifically get spices - so just because you see a lot of them near you, do not thinks they are over abundant overall.

  • Gas is also used in the creation of Flaming Humbabas, which are no longer available from a vendor.

  • Just going to toss my two cents here, but the problem seems to be an obvious one, there are a finite number of space for trees and an equilibrium needs to be met between them, the best way to do this in my personal opinion would be to form a group, set a plan and work it out, I would personally try and put many gas plants in one region and spice in another, Ix is almost all spice why not just leave it spice, but to concede remove some spices trees from somewhere else and make it all gas? There should be a comfortable mix of them all and not everyone will use all items for all purposes, but there is still a use in having them. Removing trees you don't want and placing your own is a quick way to simply end up battles over single plots/maps and constant back and forth trips.

  • @onelittlebird, you did read up there that (spice tree) beans can't be created without gas, right?  I'm agreeing with various posts above that there should really be a more mutually beneficial arrangement.  It's a bit silly to have a so-called war (within giants' imaginations, by the way) when both gas and spice are needed.
Posted 14 months ago by Lara Subscriber! | Permalink
  • yes but there are streets called east spice and west spice. they used to be all spice. in the last few days, that changed. there is so bloody much gas about at the very least those 3 (flipside too) streets could be left alone. they are crazy busy as it is with people harvesting spice. i don't give a damn now about gas anywhere else, but anyone messing in there is just being nasty.

I said war, as someone already made comments (I can't find post now) about starting one. Of course I am all words no action as I have been concentrating on other skills and can't do anything about this YET.
Posted 14 months ago by onelittlebird Subscriber! | Permalink
  • also; I've been here since alpha. I just don't get much game time. I've always focused on cooking and it's got harder and harder each refresh to get spice. because of all the gas requiring street projects suddenly going on now, this has got stupidly out of hand. Myself, I would quite like to know what the spice plant killers eat. I guess they live off grain/meat/cherries and don't much care for cooking??
Posted 14 months ago by onelittlebird Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I eat meat and eggs.  I don't have cheffery I.  I don't have anything bean seasony or botany or anything either...I just didn't have a focus when I started :P.  It's not just spice killers that don't depend on cooked food.

I'm the first to admit I'm a total newbie around here, came in after the game officially opened.  I'm just not convinced 'war' is a useful mindset for a community that's 'supposed' to be friendly and welcoming, is all.
Posted 14 months ago by Lara Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I refused to get involved when someone started it as a 'joke' but when I saw spice trees killed in east spice west spice I got upset and angry. in all honesty, I have sweet f.a. game time. I am more likely to just to give up on playing Glitch if there is so much killing of spice and replacing with gas that I can no longer happily play in my own way. There's a difference between areas being gas or spice vs people deliberately stirring (which I see planting a gas plant in east or west spice as being).

And, there a lot of people who like to mess with people in this game. a few since alpha, a lot more in beta and heaps more now. I am not, I just like to cook in-game (btw - you ought to try eating proper food, it's a hugely better energy replacer - I am interested to see you really only eat meat and eggs as that drove me mad at the start, you have to eat so many). and less spice means I can't cook and it gets very discouraging.

Also, I will find the original post when I get a chance (about killing all spice) so you can see where some of this got heated (and very sad in my mind - it's totally ruining the game for me).

  • *team spice* *high five*

A balance in the bogs for sure. But when it comes to East & West Spice... well... I wouldn't plant a spice tree in Gaseous Grange or a cherry tree on Bubble Boulevard.

  • I'm trying to find a Spice tree, but where I am, there's only bean and fruit trees. :(
But Gas Trees are kind of useless, I just keep them in my shelf, and when I'm bored, I shake them. xD
Posted 14 months ago by Akl292 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @onelittlebird, hah, I guess the things I do have really low energy requirements (harvesting, mainly).  Every few game days I'll do an egg run.  A couple RL days ago I had over 3000 eggs from an extended egg run...!  At the moment I also have over 2000 grain which I'm not sure what I'm going to do with, feed piggies maybe.  Meat, for that matter, is filling up my inventory so fast I have to sell it to have enough room for whatever else I pick up along the way.  Anyway, hope the situation improves with the whole spice/gas thing.

  • Here is a chart for those that might not be aware....

    http://www.glitch-strategy.com/wiki/Seasoned_Bean

Also know, that as long as you want piggies, chickens, butterflies, and other trees, we will be needing gas.  Yes, we need spice too. I can tell you that after going just down East and west spice, and along with flipside, I walked away with 273 spice.  Recipes dont use as much spice per recipe. Where as those that use gas seems to use A LOT.
Posted 14 months ago by Innie✿, Obviously Subscriber! | Permalink
  • yes, but so long as they stay ALL spice down there. There are 2 gas and one paper tree now & that's not fair. Also, I can't get 273 spice yet. well done you for getting so much of something you don't care about ;) like I said, really don't care now about anywhere else but that spice in Ix should be left alone.
Posted 14 months ago by onelittlebird Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Also, interesting to see from your chart link Innie, there are MORE places that gas can grow than spice.
Posted 14 months ago by onelittlebird Subscriber! | Permalink
  • That paper tree has always been and will always be there.

BTW, how do you know what I do or don't care about?  I am pretty sure I never once said I dont care for spice.

  • Spices and gas are roughly equivalent, no? There are recipes that use lots of gas and recipes which use lots of spice (the latter mostly in food and drink). Thing is, you need lots of each... I think the numbers are fairly close, no? Anyway, they have nothing on cherries...

  • Someone once again removed every single Spice Plant from the western side of Ix and replaced them with vapor trees.

The back and forth is quite, disconcerting.

Please, for you gas fellows, can you not just find somewhere else to have your gas and leave Ix alone? I just started getting recipes that use Spice, and my first run when all of Ix was spice was lovely, now it's just, annoying, I have to wait for the new day to get the spice I need, and I'm doing this on two characters!

Pick a region of your own and go all out gas, or figure out some sort of medium, killing all the trees and replacing them in a single day isn't a solution, it's a back and forth that simply annoys everyone.

Looking at the chart posted earlier we can see an obvious overlap in gas and spice tree planting areas:

    Spice Only:
    NONE

Spice and Gas can be planted:
    Ix
    Jethimadh
    Chakra Phool
    Kalavana
    Shimla Mirch

    Gas Only (no Spice!) :
    Ilmenskie Caverns
    Ilmenskie Deeps
    Uralia

I would have to propose that before you start taking over Ix, or even dream of it (please leave it alone) you look to fill those other 3 areas with gas plants as it may not be as big of a problem.

Uralia: 3 trees - Bubble, Gas, Paper (Changing those 2 will give you 2 more Gas)
Caverns: 4 trees - Bubble, 2 Gas, Paper (Changing those 2 will give you 2 more Gas)
Deeps: 0 trees ? - According to zoggish locations

Ix: 36 trees - 13 Gas, 1 Paper, 22 Spice Plants (Give up those 13)
Jethimadh: 36 trees - 35 Gas, 1 Spice (Replant that Spice) [This should be considered your Ix]
Chakra Phool:46 trees - 27 Egg, 12 Gas, 7 Spice (I don't know what's the deal with egg and if you can even replace them with Gas, so I won't comment there. The Gas/spice ratio otherwise looks okay)
Kalavana: 47 trees - 2 Egg, 10 Gas, 35 Spice (If you really needed more Gas you should be doing it here, not Ix, however this should simply be in equilibrium between the two)
Shimla Mirch: 1 tree - Paper (What's up with that...)

Now, doing some simple math here I will see that there are currently:

36+36+19(Not counting those egg spots!)+45+1 = 137 Tree Possibilities for Spice Plants
    137 + 3+4+0 (What's up with that 0 man) = 144 Tree Possibilities for Gas Plants

If we concede that they are both important we will attempt to give them an equal number of plants (despite Gas having options outside of Spice's domain)
    Option A:
    Spice Plants: 72(Total)
    Ix - 36
    Jethimadh - 36
Total = 72 (all Spice in two neat little areas alone, Gas taking all of the other 72 areas)

    Option B:
    Spice Plants: 72(Total)
    Ix - 36
    Chakra Phool - 19
    Kalavana - 17
    Total = 72

    Gas Plants: 72(Total)
    Uralia + Caverns - 7
    Jethimadh - 36
    Kalavana - 28
    Shimla Mirch - 1
    Total = 72

Now I could be wrong about those Egg Trees and I'm not an expert here, but I do have an interest in the community. If you see a problem please let me know and I'll try and resolve it, and hopefully this helps resolve this issue to some extent between you Gas v Spice people.

Please don't incite the trolls however that are replacing them just for a good kick, you can effectively ignore those people, they have no interest in either group.

  • According to the stats on http://glitch.alwaysdata.net/,
The amount of Gas and Spice almost always stays about relative to each other.
Usually they both hover between 60-75, give or take.
The problem with the regions where Gas and Spice are available to be planted, i.e. the firebogs, is that in areas like Groddle, there are sometimes 5 or 6 patches on a street. Most of the firebog  streets have no more than 2 or 3. So it's a much longer trip to get these two resources.

I have no proposed solution, I'm just throwing the problem out there to see if someone else might...
Posted 14 months ago by Jhennauchan Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Paper trees cannot be replaced or changed. They're not normal trees planted in patches. Just an FYI, since some people are bringing them up for some reason and their presence is actually irrelevant to what kinds of trees are actually planted in any location.

Also, egg trees are planted in dark patches, rather than normal patches, so you can't plant gas or spice in their place (if that was where the dubiousness about the egg trees stemmed from- I'm tired and may not be reading things well).

  • Innie - I was joking, that's why there was a ;)
(note to self; your - you think it's just - jokey sarcasm never carries online EVER)

It's in the best interests of everyone that there is a majority spice area and a majority gas area. If there is gas in flipside/east spice/ west spice I don't like it as it's a great place to go and stock up. Likewise, if there's a very gassy place and someone replants some as spice that's not on either.

    nice figuring Bluigi.
Posted 14 months ago by onelittlebird Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Okay, I did not know about the paper trees at all, sorry about that then.

That would remove a total of 4 trees and numbers would still be the same keeping Spice and Gas evenly balanced (Gas only having 2 over Spice in total instead of 4, due to those Bubble trees).

I also don't have an answer Jhennauchan's problem there, as I haven't gotten around to fully checking out those areas yet, it was a beginner solution but someone can hopefully figure this out and come up with a nice plan. Having all of Ix be Spice and having all of Jethimadh be Gas, and the rest be 50/50 would be another decent solution, however Ix being all spice would just be the bees knees in my opinion (I really would prefer to get bulk going to one place, I now have to go get Gas and am headed to Jeth, would be nice if it were all Gas and I could just run through it :) )
Posted 14 months ago by Bluigi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Eggs, gas, and wood all sell for 4 currants each at the right vendor. Spice sells for just one. While the uses for gas are few, its value comes from selling the raw stuff in bulk, kind of like how you would rather sell chunks of sparkly than sell the powders they make.

Additionally, your skill sets mostly determine the value of a tree's harvest. Spice is about as useless as grain to me, but as a primary gardener, a single gas tree yields as low as 96 but as high as 192 currants. A street with 5 gas trees that average perhaps 120 currants each in harvests yields 600 currants. 600 currants, from one street, in under one minute, is not so bad in my book.

Edit: I personally don't care what trees ultimately end up in Ix, I'm simply refuting the original poster's suggestion that gas trees are useless.
Posted 14 months ago by zZzZzZzZ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Sure, but as you said someone with your skill set. Not everyone has the same skill set, and that's why it's a community affair and not for a single person to decide eh.

They both have many uses, as I've started cooking I've noticed a lot of uses for spice. As I've started seasoning eggs I've noticed a lot of uses for gas. 4 days ago I could care less about either, now I find both valuable. Walking through Jethimadh is quite a bit more annoying than walking through Ix, but it's the same amount of trees, maybe for less value but there were already Spice trees in Ix, it fits the theme (they're basically made to be there, likewise with gas and Jethimadh), maybe in the future there will be a place that's just perfectly ideal for Gas Plants, but why ruin Ix just to make some profit, Jethimadh makes up for it in the amount of chickens I've found alone personally, there are quite a lot especially in that herb garden, made 2 bushels walking through, more than I can manage in Ix.

Jeth's music is also infinitely better, I wish there were 50k house's here I'd move right on in. Definitely going to spend more time here, or I'll need to get this song downloaded somehow.

  • For all of you young whipper-snappers insisting that Ix has always been the domain of only spice, you need to check your facts.  I'm actually a fairly late Beta-Tester, so I'm not even ancient, but back in the days when I started there was a nice and stable balance of about 1 to 4 between gas trees and spice trees in Ix.

Now get off my lawn!  :P
Posted 14 months ago by KhaKhonsu Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Mereret - ;) you are quite correct. but then spice used to be way easier to come across generally and now it isn't.  And I'm only saying Ix cos there's East Spice and West Spice. something in those names just says 'spice' to me. not sure why...
Posted 14 months ago by onelittlebird Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I wasn't stating that Ix is the domain of spice as much as I was stating that Spice Trees go much better with the look and theme there. The fact that 2 streets have the name Spice in it, and almost all the tree spots are Spice plantable kind of says something too. Gas Plants are fine and dandy, but Ix just screams Spice, the look, the feel, everything.
Posted 14 months ago by Bluigi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Someone said above, "Walking through Jethimadh is quite a bit more annoying than walking through Ix,".

Not only is it more annoying, it's much harder for people with hand/keyboard/connection problems.  There is a path through Ix that does not require any jumping at all.  It really doesn't make sense to require people who need gas to go through a lot more effort than people who need spice.

If both kinds of trees can grow in a region, then you're going to see both kinds of trees there.  One group shouldn't have an advantage in harvesting.
Posted 14 months ago by WindBorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The ultimate outcome of offing trees / replanting:

    - Players leave the game because it's no longer 'fun': either harvesting resources becomes more time-consuming/problematic, or your experience changes from helping create a world to having to defend it against tree-killing griefers.
    - Devs remove the ability to kill trees because players go on tree-killing sprees. (Or, devs have to code a system where there's some kind of default growth in areas, or implement a favor-loss mechanism for killing sprees.)

Either way, the community loses. If it's granted that Glitch is supposed to grow and evolve with the players, then we need to recognize that we should contribute to a fun experience for everyone, not just turn the place into another cliquish hangout on the web.

  • It's really not that hard to gather spice and gas in Kalavana. There's not that much jumping there. It might take a little more time, but not that much.

I prefer the idea of having half spice-half gas in Ix. I thought the gas looked nice in the left-hand areas of Ix and spice looked nice in the right-hand areas of Ix. Though they both look nice in all of Ix.

I like the quick spice gather. But I'm not going to be bothered about having to do a little more work to get all the spice I need either. Or gas, if I happen to be doing something gas-intensive (not as often). There's plenty of both out there (a fairly equal number of trees), and there are plenty of tools to use to find where they all exist.

  • At one time we had Gas Trees in Aranna. Then one night a player, seeing the real need for Wood Trees there began killing off all other trees in the area and planting it. Unfortunately the developers had changed the mix in the area and Gas was no longer plantable. I had two gas plants, then I had none. I was happy to see a Wood Tree or two in the region, but not one street entirely that single variety. So I tried to replace one of the Wood Trees with Gas, bought the Bean from a nearby Vendor and tried to re-plant. No luck.

I have since tried to keep at least one Wood Tree going on a public street in the region because of their scarcity in general, but I've had witnesses who watched an individual kill it off (and she doesn't even live on the street) and plant a Bean Tree in its place. The even tried to get that persons attention and she refused to respond or reply. I planted 6 Wood Trees in that spot. And somebody had been deliberately attacking it. There was even a note written by another player asking it to be preserved and what it took to keep it healthy. This person ignored it.
Posted 14 months ago by Fokian Fool Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Tree poison antidote seems like a good solution to that if you've already learned botany. If the issue is that the tree isn't getting healthy enough to withstand a harvest, then perhaps some fertilidust will help it. Whining about tree distribution is getting all sorts if crazy. Not to mention if you use the location checker script, you will see that there's a thriving wood tree population in the residential streets.
The major problem to me is that it seems like some people want things to stay exactly as they left them, which is almost impossible in a continuous shared world. Accept that not everyone is playing just to help you out and move on. So someone didn't read a note? Sue them! Someone planted gas on west spice? Lynch them! Just step back and realize that the tree populations fluctuate constantly and remember that it is just a game.
And remember that instead of complaining you can always take some action yourself. Form a neighborhood watch and start spanking people who touch "your" trees. I dunno.
Posted 14 months ago by Jhennauchan Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @WindBorn: Wouldn't know, because it wasn't something I've ever chosen to do.

The ability to poison a tree doesn't automatically mean a player should do so at every opportunity. I don't think we'll ever settle the issue of poison/don't poison - you always have your home as a 'safe' area to grow what YOU want - but this is getting ridiculous and overly contentious, IMHO. (Not you and I, personally, WindBorn, but this is the second 'killing trees' thread in as many weeks.)

And, as I said - if I want conflict, I'll go elsewhere. Plenty of garbage happening in the real world, including despoiling the environment. I don't need it in my entertainment.
Posted 14 months ago by TK-855 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • In my case I've been making Fertidust like mad. Replanted multiple times. Have had volunteers on my street and close by contributing to the effort. And still the tree is being systematically attacked and replaced. Killing it by accident is understandable, but this appears deliberate, especially since today someone killed and replaced it with a fruit tree and took all 3 notes around it place by different people begging them not to kill it.
