Animals with bad names!

Has anyone else noticed some of the pig and chicken names in Middle Arbor (Groddle Forest)!? Who named these guys? They must be releases because no way would the developers name a pig "annoying f***er". Would they? Someone please fix this. Didn't know we could name are own animals even.

  • When you get high enough in Animal Kinship you can rename animals to whatever you want, so this can be policed by the people.
Posted 16 months ago by Shepherdmoon Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It's gonna happen (and part of the reason for the game having an age "limit"). This is one of those "the community will fix the world themselves" things.

Best, quickest fix: Find a player with the right skill (I forget which it is) and have them rename it. Which by posting here is a good step.

  • Posting in Global Chat (while we have it) is probably the fastest way to find someone to fix it.

  • I think it's funny as hell and have most definetly named animals VERY inappropriate names
Posted 16 months ago by Kev Kliner Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Why is it funny to you, kev? :)
Posted 16 months ago by Cupcake Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Some names are funny but borderline .  Those I usually leave.  I definitely change names that I find objectionable.  I have a fairly high tolerance for objectionable, so I'm not changing every name in sight.
Wish I could do the same with some glitchen.

  • I often don't bother looking at the animal names, though I do appreciate the funny and/or clever ones. I have, however, changed names when I come across them if they're grossly inappropriate. I also don't mind doing the same for others. Feel free to let me know if you see an animal name that's inappropriate. I'd be happy to change it, provided it isn't too terribly far off (I live in Groddle Forest).

  • I love that we can rename animals, even if it means self-policing Ur.

Yesterday at Don & Sephora's wedding, someone renamed all the chickens on the street to "Mr and Mrs Draper" which I got a huge kick out of.

  • I wonder what grossly inappropriate means to Glitchians, just seems to be a game to me, what's inappropriate might be a joke to others! Watch out the censor control freaks are about

  • I think anyone familiar with youtube, WoW or xboxLive has an idea of of what kind of naming schemes can occur when the public is allowed to anonymously run rampant and uncensored.
Posted 16 months ago by A Magical Unicorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm not big on censorship, actually, but there are certain words that are probably not appropriate for a game which might have younger children about, or which some people may find offensive. It's very apparent when someone is naming an animal just to attempt to offend rather than because the name itself is amusing. It isn't an issue of control freakery.

  • See this thread for exhaustive and exhausting discussion on this topic.

I found a chicken today in Thicket with a name that called someone a skank.  I changed it to "Lovely Chicken", but I couldn't right away.  Apparently there is a cooldown period (on the animal, not the namer) for changing the name...not sure how long it is.

  • I had come across a street with a whole series of chickens with names intended to belittle someone, and that's not okay to me. If I saw a chicken with a name like Reginald Shitballs III, however, I would chuckle and move on. The latter may be considered crass, but it's not hurting anyone. Not that a chicken with a name that insults someone is necessarily damaging, but it just plain isn't nice, particularly in an environment that's meant to promote a sense of community.
Posted 16 months ago by Mahkia Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Ironically, censoring because there might be children present is a non-argument. The chicken is probably named with expletives *because* there are children present. Seriously, do you think that a mature person did that? Probably not. Personally I learned all of the good curse words by second grade of Catholic School in the 80s.

Anyways, glitch's devs have stated that target audience for glitch isn't a younger audience. (Hello! Happy endings and alcohol are all over the place!)

My opinion is that if you have a problem with something that you personally find offensive, then change it. Just remember that everyone may not have your views. I probably wouldn't name a chicken that, but I might chuckle...

Anyways, everyone knows that the funniest names for chickens are "Annoying Clucker" "The Colonel" or "Choke".
Posted 16 months ago by Kungaloosh Subscriber! | Permalink
  • ...also "Shaft" because that chicken is one "bad mother clu... "
    "Shut your mouth!"
    I'm just talkin' about Shaft!
Posted 16 months ago by Kungaloosh Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Good point regarding children. I really do think it's more an issue of names that might be offensive due to singling out a person or group of people, as I personally have no issue with "bad words" in and of themselves, but I agree that it should be left up to the good will of players to change the offending names. I in no way support the idea of names being regulated by the devs, moderators, or the game itself, and I hope I didn't come across that way. :)

  • Awesome discussion. We definitely rely on our players to keep the tone of Glitch safe, fun, and welcoming to all players.  However, if you can't change an offensive name yourself, or find someone else to do it -- please report in Live Help and we'll IM you directly to address the issue.  Please don't call out other players, though.  Or, if you'd rather -- report a bug to us.

  • I've brought this issue up before, lmao.

I have decided to go about changing animal names to lyrics of certain sirens. Primarily Lady Gaga and Madonna and Cher and the like.

  • Players who give chickens lame names are just lame. grow up already. I can name-change now but I once reported a really offensive (sexual) one in live chat & someone came & renamed it. I am not about "thinking of the children" (I have 2 children and this is NOT a kids game) and I have a pretty high tolerance for clever rudeness. But some stuff is just pathetic. Can the chickens retain a note of "who named me last?" THAT would be excellent! (and would likely stamp out the lame-o's)
Posted 16 months ago by onelittlebird Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think most super offensive names will get changed pretty quickly. With a 13+ age recommendation, I see no reason to have any kind of policy in place. The only time I have ever changed any names was to mess with my girlfriend, who was being a bit of a jerk (while playing glitch on the couch next to me). So I take responsibility for all the "sunni is jerk" chickens running about. If she doesn't like it, she better get her skills up. lol.

  • Don't think of the children... think of the chickens! How would you like to go through life called "annoying f**ker"? What kind of self-esteem are they going to have? It's bad enough getting squeezed every minute by random people passing by without so much as  a "please" and "thank you". Respect the chickens!

  • Haha, so it was you who named all the Sunni is a Jerk chickens! XD And no, those aren't the ones I was talking about when I mentioned offensive ones. I'm talking racial slurs and such. If Sunni was being a jerk, then I think the chickens have a right to proclaim such. :P

  • well, we can fix the animal naming thing by ourselves, i get that, but can somebody REALLY do something about the gnomes? i mean, like some sort of word filter? (i'm sorry if i'm going off topic, but this seemed reasonable...) People are making them say really inappropriate stuff, and there isn't anyone (except for the owner of the gnome) that can change it. Seriously, it's annoying to pass by gnomes and they say stuff like, "show me ur d***"
Posted 16 months ago by WingedWolves Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yes, some gnomes are bad & puts a new light on some players. I don't mind them so much as it only shows the owner up to be a bit sad. It's the anon dumb animal names that peeve me more. Although I have come across runaway gnomes so they can venture away from peoples houses?

Posted 16 months ago by Phochai Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I missed the other thread regarding this because its heading was "a**hole". I didn't think of searching that - lol, so I am sorry for being redundant. I certainly don't believe we should be monitored to death and I am far from being a prude, but despite the suggested age limits for the game there are kids here. Maybe they are responsible and I have satisfied them by reacting -my bad- in any case I still cringe at the thought of my 14 year old daughter coming across a chicken named "lick my c*nt". I like the "named by" idea mentioned very much, as it might make someone think a bit first, but if you MUST name your animals graphically perhaps just keep them in your own backyard.
Posted 16 months ago by gallagirl Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yes, less offended by animals once we have enough folks that can change the names to something else...more have an issue with inappropriate player names...however, in a global game, what one group finds okay...another could be offended with...so it's a challenging problem.

(I had to chuckle at erik's comment about naming chickens after his girlfriend...when I read the term 'Sunni' I don't see a name that sounds like Sunny...I see the term for a sect of Muslims...which could be taken as offensive...)

  • Good discussion. I agree that censoring probably won't work, and I agree (from other online communities I've been in) that the offensive names likely come from teens/minors.

In that community we encouraged the culture of our community in the following ways, some of which I've already seen in operation here:
    1. Gently, politely and firmly point out to the player that this sort of language is not appreciated, and have a discussion with them about why. e.g. "this community values puns and humour, that was offensive. You'll be more liked, and hence get more help, if you don't use language like that. e.g. yesterday I saw Dr Yum Yum nicely ask a player to leave some of his free offerings for other players.
    2. change the things you don't like. I will now be aiming to get that name-changing skill as a priority so I can change the name of chickens that are puerile. (and yes, I do like the cock pun too)

Finally, the devs of the game have a flag for player names. If a player names their character something that they deem offensive then they will contact the player and ask them to change it. Perhaps in Glitch the devs could have a flag for animals with offensive names and then choose whether to change those animals' names directly in the database.

  • Although I do tend to "police" names, it is primarily because I hear that kind of garbage in the Real World and I don't like reading it here.   Try sitting down in a lovely restaurant for a good time, or a concerto, or even a good RPG session.  How long would you subject yourself to a constance of expletives?  How long would others near you put up with the tirade?  In civil society it will not be long before the offending person is asked to shut up or leave.

Mildly clever word play or innuendo is one thing crass crudity is another.  Unfortunately as a former GM for an online world I can tell you that it isn't just "kids" either...

More annoying than the expletively named animals to me are the screens where every single animal is named the same.  While Robin Day had a hedgehog called Eric, and it is a great name for a half-a-bee, 17 butterflies all named Eric is a pain when you need to massage or milk them and by the time you have one massaged a different Eric gets in the way and you're off again wasting massage oil...

  • I have rarely found the names of animals offensive, and even more rarely found offensively-named animals. Since I didn't want to have to massage every butterfly I saw, I rapidly gained the renaming ability, and have changed any that I have thought were 'too far' (which admittedly means that they're pretty extreme, since I'm a potty-mouth irl).

What I find much more frustrating, as TJ Fuzzybut says, is where every animal is named the same. I mean seriously, Glitchen, the game is about imagination, and that really and seriously says to me that you have absolutely zero. Most especially when you name it after your own character. With the sole exception of stoot, who produces some of my absolute most favourite animal names of all time.

As such, I have started renaming them whenever I see them. Sometimes it's snide ('*** is the new ***' when there are two different names that are ridiculously overused, i.e. butterflies named Frank and FRank and a few other names I've seen), other times it's downright rude '*** is the most boring name ever', and other times it's marginally witty (but that's not often as I'm not that funny).

But I would like people to consider that they are being terribly UNimaginative when they name all the animals one thing, which is totally not in the spirit of Glitch.

  • As far as gnomes go, you could let people "mine" them into dust (requiring multiple taps by different people) that way, if your gnome is annoying enough the public could crush it into dust.
Posted 16 months ago by Skwid Subscriber! | Permalink
  • skwid, if we did that, i think we'd loose half the "gnome population" since there would be people that find interest in tapping every gnome they pass by. just to get us broke. and seriously, i dont know why people think it's funny to name animals and make gnomes say offencive things. i mean, seriously, i named my butterflies "Butter" and "Sky" and my pigs "piggy" and "cookie". my gnome tells me, "welcome back!" and "back already?" every time i enter the house.

  • I wish we could rename streets too.. Imagine all the havoc ! just saying :D
Posted 16 months ago by gia Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Micromanaging names is just going to piss people off. I'd rather just get rid of the naming ability for public areas and draw from a name database, giving the naming ability only if the butterfly/pig/whatever is in your house.

I've seen some cleverly named animals ("Bawk Obama") but this is going to become super-rare once the game starts. The masses are not going to be as creative as the Tiny Speck staff, I can guarantee you -- if you think "annoying fucker" is bad, wait until you get the typical MMO crowd naming each and every butterfly after racial slurs, sex acts, whatever. It's going to happen. I mean, we're a tightly-knit beta and we're already seeing "a butterfly named 4chan." Just wait until it's public and every other animal will be "a butterfly named shitting dicknipples".

  • The best thing to do is learn the skill and be able to change names yourself.  That way you are the only one who has to make the decision of whether you think its appropriate or not
Posted 16 months ago by Laurali Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Since this is no war game but a game about socializing and positive interaction hopefully it will be of lesser interest for internet bullies finding their satisfaction in being offensive and rude. Additionally, I think the idea to have a name-tag for the person last naming the animal would minimize the tendency to use rude names because the name-giver could be contacted directly. As long as the naming may be done anonimously there might be plenty more people thinking it funny to offend others.
As mentioned above by other players, one of the effective measurements besides name-tagging is to learn the skill and rename the animal as soon as you find it. I would think it sad if we no longer could name nameless animals we find in the streets or are releasing there since some of the names are really funny and inventive.
Posted 16 months ago by Cantarea Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'll change gratuitously (c)rude names, but leave funny ones. I tend towards non sequiturs, myself.

The ones I find most tedious are the "<glitchen name> is best" ones. I'll always change those if I see them. That's the sort of playground noise I can do without!

Anyone know where the FRank variant came from? I rather like streets full of Franks, but FRanks?

  • I'm not sure why this game seems to bring out the control freak in so many people. We've got people complaining about things being politically incorrect, names being too inappropriate, etc. It's a game on the internet and there's an age limit. Chances are if your 14-year-old uses the internet, they have seen things much worse than a butterfly called "annoying fucker" in a game that is otherwise harmless.

They're just words. I prefer to give animals in Glitch witty names rather than vulgar ones, but it seems like a waste of energy to get so easily offended. If I see an animal with a stupid name regardless of whether or not it's obscene, I'll usually change it to something better anyway.
Posted 16 months ago by Pretty Boss Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Pretty Boss, I'm with you on the renaming.  I always manage to rename chickens and pigs if they have terrible names.

I spent a while renaming animals in one area to landmarks and streets in my local area.  Like SJTechMuseum, Quito Road, Shoreline Amphitheatre, etc.
Posted 16 months ago by WhizGidget Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I like to (re)name the animals, especially when I see some that haven't been named at all since they were hatched. This past test, I expanded on my idea of naming animals after drag queens. :) Imagine my delight when the EOTW party coincidentally happened on a street I had populated with drag chickens! I hope no one took offense to this.
Posted 16 months ago by MicklePickle Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Pretty boss -- people advocating for being treated equally (not being politically correct, because that just means asinine things) is not a matter of being a control freak. It's a matter of seeking social justice. Doesn't matter if it's a game or not; that doesn't make it okay to be oppressive. Also, words hurt. Not everyone has to have hard skin. It's okay to be hurt by words, and it's okay to say something about it.

As for changing names of animals to what I want them to be, of course, that's what most of us do anyway.
Posted 16 months ago by Cerulean Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm not sure if I agree with being able to see who changed the names.  People can be easily offended, and it would start way more arguments than just changing the name or having someone change it for you and moving on.

  • There are something like 15 butterflies on the street out side my home. At the end of the last test, I got wacko on no-no and started to sing and milk ALL of them. To keep track, I renamed them all "1" through "15."

    Not related to anything.

  • @Laurali, i actually thought being able to see who last changed the animal's name might be quite nice. i mean, if you don't use offencive names, then you have no reason to be offended, don't you? and besides, people might actually decide to refrain from using offencive language if they knew people will tackle them later on about it. but again, it's just my oppinion.
