Calling all Geocachers

So who else playing glitch is a geocacher?  I reckon we can come up with a glitch version of the popular treasure hunting game  involving posting clues to the location of a geocache in the game.

The Geocache should be a bag with a few items in including the standard 'if you happen to stumble across this....'.  Finders replace two items with two of their own and sign the log (or leave a piece of paper with their name on it) in the bag... or simply post their log in the forum.  The tricky bit is to come up with clever ways to obscure the hiding place with clues etc. since there is no GPS involved.

Perhaps we shouldn't use the term Geocache... instead call it g-caching (short for glitch-caching).
I'm thinking of various takes on the caches... multi caches, etc with decent rewards, etc.  Could be loads of fun!

We may even convince glitch devs to give geocaching a corner of the forum if it's big enough...
I'd even suggest that if it gets big, we could create a special geocache object in the game that cannot be removed from it's site by anyone but the person who deposits it... perhaps an 'opt in' feature where you can join the game and where you don't see geocache objects if you don't opt in (so as not to clutter up the game world)

Anyone else have any suggestions or comments?  So what do you think, good idea or not?

I geocache irl, so im in. Must be careful about people just taking stuff though.. but I guess carefully hidden things could be okay maybe!

    Brilliant idea!

  • I geocache in RL also.  In the past a number of players have tried to plant some caches around Ur, but unfortunately, even with notes and such, the bags and boxes are often taken...not too much different than RL caches that get muggled.

Recommend forming a group for geocaching, or attempting to reactive this one: TreasURebag Rovers.  Sometimes it is easier just starting over instead of trying to revive an old group.

I love the idea of a special item by TS which would be a cache where you can log your visit and see who else came by.  It would be a great sub-game within the game.  Maybe they could make it so there couldn't be more than one on a street, it has to be hidden (not in plain view), and the player that places it gets their name attached to it, like in RL.

(And don't be surprised if this thread gets moved into Announcements or Ideas.)

  • i cache in real life also along with my hubby, we have been doing it for 2 years now and have a few hundred under our belts :)

i think it would be better if they left they logged on the forum as if someone left their log on a note in the bag, the max a bag can have is 16, so the bag would run out of room very fast unless the owner of that cache checked it every day or something :)

there is also a problem which i can see which may  happen is if its left somewhere public someone who doesnt know that its a cache might pick the bag up and take it maybe or something like that but other than that i think its a good idea and i would be up for it :)

I also like b3achy's idea of TS making a cache available in game which would only let the users pick it up and place it where as other glitchens could click on it and it opens with a list of whats and the cache along with the log or something like that but that maybe for the idea section of the forum.

  • I do not cache in real life (at least, not yet), but this is a brilliant idea.

  • Great idea!
Would need a way to opt in/out, and some way of tracking who did what, as to avoid someone just taking the lot and disappearing into the netherworlds with it...
