Will there be things to buy for credits besides clothes and appearance?

I am just curious, because while I would love to support the game, buying lots of clothes does not really interest me. A few, perhaps, but not hundreds of credits worth.

Will there be other things to buy? Specail animals? Extra telepotation slots? Faster learning?

I might like to decorate the OUTSIDE/public part of my house with something other than a gnome -- it would be nice to be able to personalize those.

So -- bottom line -- there is nothiing YET that I want to spend credits on, although I do like the subscriber series of options.

  • I've wondered when a new skill comes in if it'll come with the accumulated penalty already applied or if it'll just have the base.  I want the base learn time while having to begrudgingly admit that the penalty oughta be there.

I've been misquoted by media an embarrassingly large amount of times, vast majority I'm afraid.

  • This is the last i will say on this matter, since it is obviously a massive derail.

"I will concede that I may have missed part of the conversation and hence didn't catch the intended full nuance of the context as he intended it. And like I said I have nothing against Striatic , I do however have a huge problem with unfruitful negativity in general and what it does to a gaming atmosphere."

~devine, next time you "catch" me saying something "toxic", please IM me about it instead of heading off to the FaunaSphere group to spread the word behind my back. you'll find that the situation might end up much less toxic that way, long term.

as for tokens, i'd still like to discuss mid-gameplay spending, good things about it, bad things about it, methods for mitigating the bad things and enhancing the good things.

  • it would be nice if, during beta, new skills that are introduced could have substantially reduced learning times for a limited period upon release so as to allow us testers to quickly make with the testing.  cause... yay teleportation!

(eta:  that is to say...  yay testing!!)  ;)

  • mid-gameplay spending = spending decisions made quickly in mid gameplay, especially where delaying purchase decreases its value, accelerating the spending imperative.

non-mid-gameplay spending = spending that takes place over time, and typically involves disengaging from the typical in game activities in order to make spending decisions.

currently, there is no mid-gameplay spending. buying a subscription, for example, is something one can think about, budget for and do at any time. buying clothes is similar.

if someone says "hey come join us" for either social or gameplay objectives, the time constraint on deciding to spend or not to spend teleportation tokens is much more direct.

I've seen kevbob learn half a dozen skills in the space of a minute. I think he must have Better Learning MCMLXIV or something...

  • They do shorten skill learn times for us.  I'd bet that all the skills we currently have are gonna have longer learn times after the release, significantly for some.

  • striatic, re "stoot, I've brought this up multiple times mostly because you have never, and still haven't, responded as to why token based teleports would work for glitch better than other methods"

Eh? Respond to what? I honestly didn't know there was a question! But if the question is "Why would token based teleports work for glitch better than other methods?" I'd need to know what you mean by "other methods".

(Because "Why would token based teleports work for glitch better than other methods of paying for extra teleportation ability beyond the ones granted through skills?" doesn't really make sense to me: the latter is the former.)

  • @striatic - Deal. And in my defense I wasn't trying to go behind your back. I did say something to you at the time. I was distraught and I was talking to my friends. that's all.  I do realize that I have a personal trigger point in this regard, as do many if not all of the FS'ers. We were so very thankful to come to this awesome game and we worked very hard to keep our community intact, we were totally devastated when FS closed, some were even suicidal, which may seem extreme, but there are homebound and elderly people whose only contact with the outside world was through that game and I fear that some of us and our community would be totally devastated yet again if anything were to happen to our new found home.

  • I certainly would buy credits if I could enlarge my storage areas and/or house, buy unique animals or plants, and MAYBE buy an occasional teleportation token.

  • Rascalmom: yes, please!

I'd rather see home enlargement done without investment of dollars, since it would complicate the real estate market tremendously.  Investing currants would be much less tricky.

  • I can understand that people don't want paying customers to have a game advantage over non-paying customers (although there's no way to "win" in this game, so it really doesn't matter that much...), but I still think it's important for everyone to realize that in order to make enough money to keep the game alive, Tiny Speck has to charge real money for something desirable. If no-one wants the stuff up for sale because it's frivolous to them, they are much less likely to spend the money on it, and just go for the free-play. Something with substance (metaphorically speaking) must be offered--some people are happy with buying entire wardrobes full of clothes, but others just don't care about that.

As for me, as long as I have a job at the time, I am more than happy to pay for a subscription even if I don't get anything extra out of it, just to support a totally awesome game that I want to see continue for a very long time. I'm happy to force my money on people that offer to give me something for free if I feel that they deserve it (like making that musician take money for the CD he told me to take for free... I don't care if I'm a friend, I don't need special privileges, and I want to compensate him for all the work he put into it, and all the pleasure I know I'll get out of listening to it...)

  • stoot, i tend not to ask direct questions in the forums because it assumes i am looking for a response or to place a burden on your time to answer a direct question, which will probably get lost in the shuffles anyways.

because going into a forum and saying "stoot, please answer the following question - Why would token based teleportation be better suited for glitch than other potential methods?" and expecting you to a] see it b] respond to it.

.. and yet barring that response there is little to cause me to re-evaluate my opinion on the matter, other than other players -  who i can only engage with by bringing the subject up again. so when the subject comes up i'm going to say the same thing, bring up the same points. not in order to get a response from you, but in-part because of the lack of response.

of course this is different than when you ask me a direct question as you are now.

by "other methods", i don't think i meant "other methods of teleporting", but "other methods for generating revenue, generally". in terms of specifying other methods, i had provided alternate examples in this thread and others. i am under no illusion that these are "good ideas", but they are good in articulating the kinds of spending scenarios i am more comfortable with, and to stress the distinction between mid-gameplay spending and other kinds of spending [one off out-of-gameplay, recurrent billing/subscription based etc]

  • As a former FSer, I actually like opportunities for mid game impulse spending, especially if the results liven up game play in a non-essential way. I would ask that these remain non-essential, but you guys don't seem to have any problem understanding this gameplay issue and the results it can have.

(Any FSR here still have a primary color or pattern gene? I'll swap ya for teleport token next time the game is open.)

And I adore seeing Stoot stand up for glitch instead of being ashamed. :)

@Striatic: you DO tend to come across very harsh and negative on a regular basis. Unlike Divine~, I personally suspect you have no idea how your words read/sound without your mental inflection coming thru as intended. However, from experience with both other social games and MANY forums, users who have similar inflection interpretation vulnerabilities are often the unintentional catalyst for major conflict and discord. Please take a few extra minutes to consider how your posts might sound in the future.

  • murri, i have become more harsh and negative toward the game lately. i am well aware that my tone follows suit. perhaps it is irrational to become harsh and negative toward a game, but i'm always trying to channel that negativity into observations and suggestions that are as constructive as possible.

i am also very capable of being very generous and positive toward the game, and have been so far more than i have been negative.

in this *particular* instance i don't think that tone or inflection was the major problem. a number of people who heard the conversation in question have stated that they didn't find the tone to be toxic.

~devine perhaps didn't catch all of the conversation, and misinterpreted it. then, without malice, it was mentioned in the faunasphere group. i'm unsure if some people had unintentionally poisoned first impressions of me or solidified unsure judgments or whatever. i will try to assume not, but that's the kind of paranoia that can develop when one hears about these kinds of things.

  • striatic----from what i gather the teleportation tokens arent used to teleport to general area's it wont give anyone else a real advantage over anywhere else if your worried about street projects, etc, and you will never actually have to spend money on this game if you do not wish to, without disadvantage-- Though they must have things in game to purchase, weather it be, teleportation tokens to speed up teleports instead of waiting patiently when you want to teleport to some random place (i assume the regular teleports that you set will still be there, so if you wish you can still teleport there) seeing how this is a MMO, which needs constant care and attention, they need a revenue somehow or another-- or the game will cease to exist--- i doubt its about making a million dollars-- its about keeping us Happy and giving us a choice-- which ALOT of MMO's out there do not give you an option to do, this is the first game ive seen which you can do soo much as a non-member. I think Tiny speck is made up of very very smart people who know what they are doing, And when i said "From what i gather" this is my understanding of it, Which may indeed be wrong, but im willing to go out on a limb and say that.

  • should also make it clear, to help get back on topic, that it makes sense to me that glitch would want revenue coming from things other than just skins [clothes, house designs, etc.]

there will be subscriptions too, of couse. obviously i don't like the idea of teleportation tokens, but i can understand the desire to have revenue that is somewhere between relatively rare one-offs [clothes] and monthly recurring income [subscriptions], even if it is just to cover all the bases and figure out what works and what doesn't.

  • @striatic whether we are part of the FS group or not. We can only form an opinion on written words. I am from FS but, for a few tests I stayed in the help channel just to get a feel of glitch. I joined the FS group after a few tests. I didn't see anyone pass any comment about you. I though, after spending time in the help channel, got a negative vibe from you . So it's not centered around that alleged conversation of 6 months down the line blah de blah. I was not part of that anyway. It's purely on my observation of your posts and comments. I don't mean any dis-respect at all, it's merely my observation.

  • Oh for sure, There would probably definitely be other things in game that they will think of and discover used for credits, But i really don't believe they will ever make it a huge disadvantage not to have credits-- Though-- I for one Will support this game in hopes that what happened to Faunasphere will not happen to this game :D
Posted 20 months ago by blackwidow Subscriber! | Permalink
  • blackwindow, i'm not really concerned about the in-game advantage thing, although i do think accelerated teleportation will create it. game-time is game-money. speed is a commodity.

regarding tiny speck, they actually *do* need to make millions of dollars as they have had millions of dollars invested in them. this isn't a bad thing, and does not make anyone involved untrustworthy, but it is a very big deal if the company isn't successful. that doesn't mean that making the game is "about" making millions of dollars, but you get my drift. it's important, and surely a driving factor in the development of the game.

.. but i'm not sure why this keeps coming up in conversation .. i don't think anyone here is begrudging tiny speck making money, or even making it hand over fist.

  • "I was hoping to join the Glitch "T-shirt-a-month club"..." from dopiaza...

Now THAT's an idea! Except... I don't really need 12 t-shirts per year... how about a new type of item each month, like a mouse-pad one month, a calendar another month (probably for December)... etc... THAT I'd get excited about--what could I possibly get in the mail next? I don't know, but I'm excited to find out!
Posted 20 months ago by Shepherdmoon Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yea, no i get what your saying, What i mean though-- teleportation tokens wont create a disadvantage Due to the teleportation skills-- if you can teleport to.. 2 lets say 3 places if you set it to, You can go there instantly, to collect rocks/go home/get project stuff Though-- if you want to teleport somewhere you dont have set due to laziness, Then i agree that credits would be great for that! :D
Posted 20 months ago by blackwidow Subscriber! | Permalink
  • regarding "one-offs" and clothes. i think there will be people who buy every single piece of clothing that is made available. possibly even "t-shirt of the day" clubs.

what i meant is that you wouldn't want to count on everybody buying virtual clothes every day or even every week. it makes sense to have additional ways of bringing in revenue as well, that might be more frequent for every player than clothes purchase.
Posted 20 months ago by striatic Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I know that. I was just being frivolous.
Posted 20 months ago by dopiaza Subscriber! | Permalink
  • "if you want to teleport somewhere you dont have set due to laziness"

see, i don't think that laziness is the only reason to want to teleport to arbitrary locations you haven't put down landing points for. there are potential productivity reasons as well.

.. but i don't want to get into this further. "in game advantage" really isn't why i have my serious difficulties with the token idea.

Re. Tweetypie - the reason i've seemed negative is because i've been feeling very negative. felt like i've had the rug pulled out from under me when it comes to projects multiple times, primarily in terms of falling for "teased" areas over and over again.

  • Based upon playing GL since March and becoming hopelessly addicted, I have full confidence that ts will work out the teleportation issue so that it is a win-win all around. They have the "big picture", the long-range vision, and the talent and creativity to take MMOs to the next level. Certainly the industry believes that, as does the angels who are backing the venture. And that's my 2 cents...not that anybody asked...LOL

  • rachel, i thought much the same way as you back when stewart's first irreverent web based massively multiplayer online game failed.

obviously glitch is different, and the chances of success are much much higher due to many factors, including the increased investment. that's a very good thing, but with increased investment comes increased expectations and obligations.

i do not have full confidence that tiny speck will work out, although i have high levels of confidence. i have lower levels of confidence that the tokens thing will work out, let alone be a win-win all around.

certainly the developers deserve praise when they do awesome things, as they regularly do and which i regularly participate in heaping upon them.. but i hate seeing the counterpoint to negative criticisms being 'devs rock!'. there are specific things to discuss. current and potential features with specific qualities and potential effects. i don't want to gloss all that over because the devs are ubermensches all, and incapable of anything less than perfection.
