Butlers

Those of you who have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of butlers will be glad to know that our training program has reached the point where we think the butlers can be trusted to reliably perform simple tasks.

Butlers can hold packages and messages for you, and give information to your visitors. You can give your butler a name, and customize its appearance.

If you see any problems, please let us know and we will send the offending butler to remedial training.

Updates:
Forgot to say: Your butler can also open your mailbox.

And, for people who find their butler is stuck on their porch or door, switch your  house style to the Hobbit house or Groddle Cottage, then switch it back.

Further update:
Messages are now echoed in local chat, so you can read them later! (Note: in general, butler conversations that get echoed to local chat are only visible to the person the butler is talking to.)

Tuesday!
When you leave info, the butler now shows you what your info currently is and asks if you want to change it.

Wednesday:
For those people who don't like their butler standing next to the door, we now have a way for you to tell the butler where to stand. Simply click on your butler and choose "Set post" to change the butler's assigned post to your current position.

Also, we increased the maximum length of butler names by a few characters, and butlers will now leave their IM windows open after you leave the location so you can continue reading your list of visitors.

  • Could you at least make them hop from one foot to the other and back again (as if they needed to pee) when they have messages or packages?

  • That's why I can't get enough of them!

    +1 to Walruz's idea, too!

  • Agree with Balatik on the design of the butler. Here's this fun, quirky world of nature and animals, and yet here's this scary clown of children's nightmares. Looks more apropos of a Batman movie than of Glitch.

Sorry to start with the negative. It is great to have a butler. So much fun and so convenient. Also I was so excited to get a package at my house! :) Thanks.

  • I would like my Asterisk my b0tler to look welcoming and friendly, not like a castoff from the crazy clown circus. I'm not talking saccharine-sweet ooey-gooey cutesy-poo. I'm just talking cosy and approachable.

To me, the current face designs look either damaged, catatonic, or crazed. I'd rather have something with no face than an off-putting face.

  • I have almost completely the opposite reaction to the designs.  I feel like they fit very well into the world of Glitch and I find them to be cute.

That said, those of you who dislike them have a very strong point.  For one, obviously, your opinions and feelings are not wrong!  But mainly, the butlers don't have the wide of a variety of aesthetics.  They all start to look alike after a while.

I think that catering to your wishes would allow for a much wider variety of looks, which would be, in a word, awesome.

It would be nice if they at least had enough variety to match each of the street styles.  Kind of like the vendors do.  A fire bog butler should look like it's made out of gourds and sticks, for instance.  And, of course, you could mix and match if you wanted.

  • Oh!!! I Want a butler that looks like a vendor!

  • Creepy. I wish I've left mine in the box. But I do like the functionality.

  • I agree that they fit the aesthetic of the game... mostly. It's just that there's something incredibly... off about them. It's like the idea is almost all of the way there, but something didn't quite make the jump. And the only options we have are to make it super creepy (which fits with maybe two of the paid-only street designs) or super-duper sugary-sweet cutsie. There's no middle ground, and there's no way to just make something simple. I'd be happy with just a plain wooden doll, or a little robot scooting around on treads, or maybe a scarecrow or something. Hell, I'd even be ok with letting the street spirits fill this role after all the vendors go away. I'm not even entirely sure why the magic rock can't do this for us, to be quite honest. It's kinda sad to see his influence on the game slowly melting away...

(And no, I don't find the butlers creepy just because they are dolls. I have no issues with dolls or puppets or clowns or anything. These things are just legit creepy looking.)

  • Changes: when you leave info, the butler now shows you what your info currently is and asks if you want to change it.

And, I think I've fixed the problem with visitors not getting reported.

  • I happen to love the butler design, but I agree that something we are all REQUIRED to have in our yards should allow us a bit more customization.  If we're gonna be forced to stare at it forever, then we should at least be able to make it our own.  I mean, I don't really like the gnomes, but I could choose not to have one.  I found the 50K modern houses ugly/depressing, so I didn't buy one.  No harm no foul.

But the people who don't like the Tim Burton aesthetic of the butlers are stuck with it, which makes them grossed out by their own yards.  (Which, if I may be honest, is kind of how I feel about the rock -- I vastly prefer my butler to my rock.)  I think the protests in this thread should be taken seriously, even though I personally am very attached to my little Incandenza.

  • i like the butlers and their creepy cuteness, it's right up my alley and makes me wish for more of that aesthetic throughout the glitch world. that saying, i wouldnt object to more options to appease the protesting masses (boiler hat please ;).

  • Clark is wonderful! He even reminds me about miscellaneous things, like visiting basements. I like the way he looks and being able to change the look whenever I want.

  • Every time I look at Didit I think "Somewhere a village is missing an idiot".
Between the creepy butler and the cranky rock, I'm skulking around my own home.
Where can I buy some "Butler Be-Gone!" or "Rock AWAY!"?

  • Perhaps we could turn them into flowerpots and grow herbs in them

  • Can I dissolve my butler, and return its body to the sea of LCL^H^H^HImagination from whence it came?

I kind of want a do-over, and want my butler to look exactly like my Magic Rock.
I think this is the one time I'm going to complain and say this thing is kinda ugly.

... if that's okay with you, that is.

  • Do the butlers have to be so ugly? I've made mine as cute as I can make it, but I'm still kind of creeped out by it.

Edit: I don't mean to sound too disparaging (of the artist, in particular). I just wish there were more options. Why do all the options have to be disfigured stuffed dolls?

Edit #2: After skimming the thread, I see I'm not the only one who feels this way, and that it's being addressed. Nevermind then! I guess just add my voice to the number clamoring for more options.

  • Had a day or so to look at and use the butler. Functionally, it is great (though it would be fun if it had more different responses for things it doesn't understand.)

In appearance, it looks like the kind of rag doll the Other Mother (from Coraline) would make. I'm still not sure whether I like that.

More colors would be cool. Mine says he wants a red necktie. At least, that's what I think he meant when he let his arm fall off.

  • I think the bug with visitors not being registered is still a problem I know that someone has visited my street and it hasn't registered in the last few hours and just a few minutes ago a friend and I saw someone in her street and when she got home it didn't show with her butler.

  • I LOVE the butlers and think that they fit the game perfectly! I mean a game that has a bartender in Hell has got to have something a little edgy, don't you think? Sorry if that bothers the people that want a "normal looking" butler... We have SO much availability to customize pretty much everything - just open your mind a bit. Of course, with the new customizations coming, I am sure the people that find them "gross" or "scary" (LOL - what world do you live in) will have what they want eventually. Just sayin'...

P.S. I might be so obsessed with them because when I was little I always dreamed of having a butler :P

  • For those people who don't like their butler standing next to the door, we now have a way for you to tell the butler where to stand. Simply click on your butler and choose "Set post" to change the butler's assigned post to your current position.

(Hint: if you want to move your butler to the other side of the street, open a chat window, go to where you want it, and tell the butler "come here".)
Posted 6 months ago by Etna Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Oh cool.

Too bad you can't summon or call it through local chat :P
Posted 6 months ago by Palindrome Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Palindrome: in case this wasn't clear, setting the butler's post changes where it goes back to once you are done talking to it. If you summon it, it will eventually leave (unless you do "set post" after you summon it, of course).

  • I have a question, if the answer is no, then I have a suggestion!

Question: does leaving birch candy with a butler for someone count towards the achievements?

Suggestion if the answer is no: it totally should! it's like the opposite of Halloween! Instead of going around asking for candy you go around giving candy! It's like the Glitch-way! *ahem* Of course if the answer is yes then awwwwesome!
Posted 6 months ago by Viresse Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yes, of course.

That was just a side comment.
