Ok. I applied

Several of you have trying to get me to apply with Tiny Speck. Just finished it. My resume is sadly out of date and never really done well IMHO, and a rapidly done (but lengthy) cover letter as well.

Links to some crappy documents here (Yes, that really is my personal information - please don't abuse it):
<edited>

It's pretty obvious I don't do this very often :)

  • Thank you. I did do a previous app, and whoever looked at that note I put in the resume field probably had a laugh :)

  • I can't speak for Tiny Speck, but as someone that reviewed resumes at another studio I can say you will get a lot more attention if you include links to actual source code that they can look over (preferably on github, bitbucket, or similar). Also going to recommend removing Fortran and Cobol unless that is supposed to be humorous ;-)

  • Hope you get the job!

PS I'll bet we have some mutual friends. I know some of the folks in IT at MST.

  • @coderanger - I actually included those to be humorous (in part). Believe it or not, there are still companies looking for those programmers to deal with legacy code.

My cover letter mentions the problem of missing code portfolio elements. I've literally had several computers stolen over the years. Had another fry its hard drive when it's power supply unexpectedly blew as I was starting my first backups, etc. It's been a "fun" few years. :) There is/was a U.S. Federal agency that is using a database system I set up for them but that code isn't public, and the work I did at Data Race was embedded code for modems and multiplexers. Proprietary work and not something you'd find on the distribution channels normally. I do have a little bit of code on my personal site with regards to a patch to the CodeIgniter framework. I had a lot of positive comment there, but it's a pretty small chunk of code - more comment than functional elements.

  • @Riverwalker - MST? Rings a bell, but I can't place it.

  • @Fokian Sure, just guessing Tiny Speck isn't :-) As for not having code, just spend a weekend hacking on something small, maybe a time tracking website or a blog engine, and throw it up on github. It doesn't have to big complex, just show a decent grasp of software engineering principles (namespacing, source control, config management, maybe a few tests :). Want me to send you my resume? It seemed to work well in the game industry (judging by the number of cold calls I get) up until I went back to the world of startups.

  • @coderanger - sure. Go for it. the @basketcasesoftware.com is best at the moment. Actually I have a complex web storefront I'm working on right now. More than 30 megabytes of file data. Of course a lot is the frameworks I'm using and such. Technically I can provide links to the sections I'm working on, but they are incomplete. Most of these are full of working holes being just quick mockups and none have had database integration yet.
    BasketcaseSoftware.com/adatti
    BasketcaseSoftware.com/bonfire
    basketcasesoftware.com/bonf...
    basketcasesoftware.com/new/...
    basketcasesoftware.com/new/...
That's kind of a history there.

  • Fokian you are from Rolla?  If so, are you older than or younger than 30?  Not that I'm trying to be rude asking your age, but I have a lot of friends in Rolla.

  • Older. :) And given where you go to school, I'm not surprised. My ex-wife's uncle taught at UMR for years until he went into private industry.
I lived in Rolla once. About 6 years. My dad still lives there and used to have a University contract. Heck, I've had a lot of connections with that university at one time.

  • I would suggest that you remove your personal details from public view as a matter of urgency. One basic of all web based sites is that you should never disclose personal information online.

  • @Laurali is in my Google+ circles. My email and address history is public there, but I'm stripping that info now.
