RESET - And they're off...!

I was just wondering what will happen when the game goes live. Many people will be glued to their pc's waiting for that highly anticipated moment - and will race into the game full of joy and enthusiasm. Are we suddenly going to have 1000s of eager glitches all in the same place trying to do the same thing at the same time? Are we likely to be lagged senseless or scrabbling over resources?
[Actually, knowing my luck, I will be on holiday for the first 2 weeks of the live game :((  ]

  • Very likely. (I wouldn't be very surprised if there is a bit of a rolling launch. We hear "reset at launch" but it may be "reset just before launch." We may get a short head start. Or not.)

Personally, once the game goes 24/7, I will feel A LOT less pressure to crap every possible game play moment. BUT I do want to be there at launch.

  • I want to wait for it, and just hope that'll work out with whatever I'll be doing or where I'll be living at the time. I get RL mood boosts from seeing my glitch jumping around and petting trees with abandon, especially if I haven't done it in a little while!

I'm curious to see how crowded the game will be in it's first hours live. Actually, I've been wondering how many players will be online at any given time once it settles, compared to how it is now.

  • I actually hope they'll give beta testers a slight early entrance.  Many MMOs do this & it's much better than swamped level 1-2 areas with lag and over-crowding.

  • I wonder if there will be Realms which separate the players, like in WoW. This should reduce the lag and the overpopulation, but the game will be less social.

  • Lmao, it's going to be like those commercials where everyone barges in to one place at the same time. It's going to happen in slow motion to "O Fortuna" playing in the background.

It's a lot like Black Friday at Target at 4AM.

  • "O Fortuna"?  I was thinking more like "Dies Irae" as everyone dives in slow motion for the pigs.  They may need a requiem after that many glitches descend on them anyway! =D

  • @ Snygyst - groan: in that case the reset is likely to happen between 10th and 27th July as I'm away for the whole of that period (bar a few hours overnight in between trips). That's such a depressing thought that I might miss the madness. Although you could be right with the awesome lag.

Twoodle goes away to look more carefully at taking a laptop to Norway. Just need a power source and wi-fi for my lightweight tent..... Where there's a will there's a way!

  • I may store the shelves around me with suger pops and all that bad stuff and go out in a suger high higher than no no powder haha.

  • @Twoodle - my past life involved travel with my laptop often enough I bought a secondary power supply for Europe. I loved the wi-fi virtually everywhere populated! Take lots of pictures if you get a few minutes, and show us all the fun places Glitch is going?

As for the topic, after the last reset I found it hilarious watching the batches of people complete the same skill at the same time as we all put our efforts in one area. Ooooo and the big panic and race to housing, the reactions when people suddenly go 'that was easy, I don't know why I was so worried' are priceless.

  • Yes, Please let the beta testers in one week before launch and the alpha testers in two weeks before launch...

    that is all

  • Let's all start fair and square. Alpha and beta testers still have the benefit of having a handle of the game. We're definitely already at a huge advantage.

  • Cerulean has it. If you can catch and milk a butterfly you're already light years ahead of the pack on day one.

    I agree.

  • Right the hugest advantage is the knowledge in our head to be really fair maybe they should let all brand new players start a week ahead of us, NAH that's just to fricking fair.  LOL and is hugest even a word?

  • We definitely will have the advantage having already experienced all the aspects of the game.. knowing what skills we want to focus on, where the best locations are for certain activities.. Would be nice to get in a few days early but hope we all remember to be kind to the real newbies too.  Just sayin..   .. and yeah, xoxJulie.. that would be just tooooo frakin fair.. lol

  • I hope we know ahead of time... definitely will take that day off from work if I have enough of a warning.  :-)

  • Totally agree w/Cerulean; we already have an advantage. People who started a month before me have a huge advantage... and it's difficult completing low-level quests. Perhaps Beta Testers get different quests, or start the game with a few tools and perks (hint, hint), to separate them from newbies who need to learn everything. This way, the new users fight over milking butterflies and compete for patches, we move through the game on different levels? Is that unfair?

  • I joined not that long ago and the low-level quests seemed straightforward enough. I don't remember many of them that would put you in competition with other players for resources.

IMO having the reset a few days before Glitch opens to the public would create a better mix of different level players. So far I've never felt like higher-level players are hurting me.

  • Agree it would be nice to know beforehand which day TS plans to go live/reset so that folks can be sitting at their keyboards waiting for the big day.  Also some want to have opening day parties, etc.

I also don't think it would be a half bad idea to allow the Alpha/Beta team in a day early, so that they can get their competitive selves situated.  I think there is going to be a lot of racing for resources at the start so that folks can get the houses they want, etc. I'm not sure you want a bunch of noobs getting lost in this activity - could be a major turn off if they need help and everyone is too busy rushing around to get resources/quests/earn currants to help them.

But with the knowledge already gained, I don't think Alpha/Beta testers need more than a day or so advantage to get themselves back into the game. Especially if it is known, the hard core ones will likely take the day off and play 18-20 hours straight...should be able to get in the mid-high teens/early 20s in that time with focus.

Agree that a tiered entry would create a better mix of the level of players in the game.  Also would allow for a tiered strain on the servers which could be better balanced over time vice one mass of players trying to enter at the same time.  Would hate to see the servers crash from overload, if there is a large influx of new folks.

  • I'm with those who said they want everyone to start on a level playingfield at reset. Alpha and beta testers will know their way around the controls and world and know what to do and will inevitably level faster. In that way a mix of levels will be established fairly quickly. I certainly don't think testers should have access to the best housing before everyone else - that is like creating two classes of people!

  • Give us early entry and a trophy for being beta testers. :)

  • The mix of levels will probably be established within the first hour.  How long does it take to go through level 1?  Ten minutes?  Fifteen?

  • Maybe the game should open on Labor Day since most people will have that day free regardless and it's not one of the larger holidays that people celebrate (you know, like compared to Independence Day or Thanksgiving and the Winter Holidays, etc.).
Posted 18 months ago by Cerulean Subscriber! | Permalink
  • And every one here who works in the hospitality industry, the service industry or in retail will be working 8 to 10 hours a day all weekend to make sure you can celebrate.
Posted 18 months ago by WindBorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I was saying it's a holiday people don't really celebrate. That way people can play instead of having to spend time in front of the barbecue, or with their families, etc. Lol. As for hospitality and retail... is there ever a day when people that work in those industries are free? :P

  • Could I suggest that the email for launch be sent out a day or so early? As it is, I miss a large amount of game play just because the email is sent while I'm asleep (hooray for being on the other side of the world) and I'd really love to be there at the launch (however that is done).

  • I like the idea of a beta tester trophy, and I am one of the few that don't want the de-res in Akalol so I'm not too worried there, But the hints from admin suggest I will be away for the start  :(

  • My thought is TS will make it know to us internally (here, or at our email addys) the date/time of the opening a couple of days in advance...For me that's reward enough for having the privilege of being invited to the beta-test.

Ya know folks, we're really not that special - maybe the Alpha testers are as so many of them are talent - just be grateful and kool it on all the "gimmie, gimmie's." TS does't owe us anything.
Posted 18 months ago by MeherMan Subscriber! | Permalink
  • i've said this elsewhere, but for me resetting is a disincentive to continue playing, which is ok. i feel like TS has been awesome, and i hope as a tester i've been somewhat helpful (as opposed to just a pain in the tuchus).  i don't feel competitive about this at all- having an advantage, getting my house back, keeping my stuff, etc- it's just the idea of re-doing what i've done.  in some ways this is appealing, but most of the time it feels kind of... dull. i have these skills that make the game fun: gardening, cooking, mining, etc. and it feels just redundant to go back again. i'll get my quests back, which is nice, but do-over doesn't sound good.

but this is OK. i don't need to play glitch forever, and playing glitch the last months has been really awesome.  maybe i will come back later when i've forgotten some of the stuff, and when it seems fresh again.

or, maybe like someone pointed out, it won't take that long to re-do everything, which will make it fine to redo it. on the other hand, the tedious part will be re-doing these long ass skills- 9 day mining? it's ok when the game is closed to sit there and let my rock do his thing, but when the game is open all the time and i've now done everything the second time around, faster now because a)i've done it before and b)the game is open all the time, the sparkly rock won't seem so shiny anymore.
