Does anyone actually enjoy fox brushing?

I think the mechanic couldn't be more clunky or non-intuitive and most crucially it doesn't feel like it "fits" with the rest of the Glitch interactions.

But maybe this is just me? I'd really love to hear what it is people enjoy about it. Maybe I can try to see it from your POV. Thanks!

  • Performance has actually improved the past week or so for fox brushing, it seems. It used to lag terribly and I would reach the fox maybe 1/2 the time. I'm usually the only one in the park and manage about 1400-2000 fibers per bait. I believe that I got a lot more when there were more people in the beginning, so I'm looking forward to seeing more fox brushers around. I do enjoy it, it's one of the faster paced activities in the game, gets my blood pumping!

  • I don't.  That may be the point of it.  Something the devs created just to torture the user base. We have to entertain them somehow. :)

  • I don't enjoy refining metal ore, either.  I don't know that I'm supposed to.  Glitch is a mix-match of activities.

  • I love fox brushing! I was kinda sad to get the max achievement. The fox is fairly predictable and I like the noise when you successfully brush. When I think of how much I hate feeding batterflies, I like fox brushing even more...

  • When I don't know what else to do in Glitch but I feel like playing, you'll find me fox brushing and running iMG games in between baiting.

Which means for the last few weeks I've done almost nothing but brush foxes.

I very much approve and hope for more animals with unique mechanics.

  • No I don't think so.

  • I've never found a way to make it fun.   Its a bit frustrating and slightly more tedious than gardening.   I'll still do it on occasion, but only if I need to.

  • I like the challenge of it.....i just don't like to do it all that often.

  • Yes, just zoom out a bit, it helps make the experience tremendously less infuriating. Oh, and I carry two fox brishes at once, in the center of a bag. Once one is used, I go for the other, rinse repeat. you can get even mousing distance to the edge of the screen this way.

    Good luck!

  • I like it! It makes a change from the usual click -- wait -- stuff appears sort of mechanic. Also, the foxes are cute (it's the wiggly tails that do it for me)!

I can see why people find it frustrating, though, especially when it's laggy.

  •  lasy night i went afk  a number of times waiting and three of the seven baits i lit expired with no fox appearing, it is quite possibly the thing i like least in the game.

  • I prefer it with a dedicated team of at least 3 people. Still is messy though. needs team work to work well.
Posted 4 months ago by jiva Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Im obviously the exception - i find it actually quite calming and soothing, prob because its mindlessly repetitive but does require some action unlike mining which is click......wait.......click...wait......

  • Gahhh I hate itttttt...annoying lil creatures..Just gimme the fiber already..LOL :D

( Actually I think the foxes are cute and I do like watching them run around )..But not with my fiber stuck to their hair... tut!!!!

  • Don't like it at all. And 1400-2000 per bait? My aim is pretty darned good, but no way do I approach that! I find it both costly and tedious. At least with sloths I can milk butterflies and squeeze chickens in between!
Posted 4 months ago by Mollie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Find it ok if I am in the mood :)  I zoom right out and use two brushes.  I like it when I get one cornered and keep getting it on the nose and driving it back.  I'm not amazing at it and often throw my bait at it instead.

It's good to have different sorts of activities, glad they are not like the sloths, they are SO boring :D

  • I love fox brushing because I really enjoy timing-type mechanics in games. Luckily I don't notice to much lag when I brush.

  • I love it, and hope for a few more activities of this nature. But I also try to stay in midair while harvesting milk from butterflies, so... there is that :)

  • I rather like fox brushing, for the same reason I like GoC. Even the last badge for it was a piece of cake for me. It requires active involvement, not just waiting for some action to complete. I realize that may be the problem for a lot of people, as a lot of people also happen to detest GoC. In both the case of fox brushing and GoC, that's fine. To each their own. But it's a little silly to assume nobody likes it just because you don't (same thing happened after the removal of GoC booths; someone claimed no one uses them, while there's actually a large group that uses them extensively). To those who happen to dislike actions that require active involvement, I'm sure there's some more relaxing activity for you, that could fund fiber for you to purchase on auction/from SDB's. (insert something about specialization here)

  • I think fox brushing is not that bad, BUT...

    - The achievements requirements for the top badges are way too high to be sensible
    - There is a disproportion between the pains you have to go to get fibers and the actual use of said fibers
Posted 4 months ago by Ayzad Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I do! I really don't mind it at all. I like the fact that you can accumulate quite a bit in a relatively short amount of time. It might be one of those things that the devs knew only a few people enjoy, and those people could therefore specialize in and provide enough product for everyone else. I feel that also holds true for cooking, which I really dont enjoy at all, and would happily buy prepared foods rather than make them myself.

  • Until I got the hang of all the little extra tricks--zooming out, lighting several baits at once, using two brushes--I was quite hopelessly bad at it.

I really have to be in the mood to do it, but it's not bad. As others have said, it's kind of nice to have a qualitatively different activity within the game just to shake things up a bit.

  • To me, fox brushing is not fun at all. I consider it a "grin and bear it" type of chore. The foxes do not like me at all! I use the suggestions offered above and average 40 fibers per bait when I work by myself. I do somewhat better when working with a group.
Posted 4 months ago by GreyGoose Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Ayzad: I wholeheartedly disagree. The 50003 fox brushing badge was among the easier "top" badges I've gotten. You want something too high to be sensible? Try restoring the same cultivation project 20 times (nonetheless, it's possible, and I've completed it). I think Maniacal Foxbrusher took me maybe two hours, as opposed to twenty hours or so spread over a few days for Dedicated Restorationizer. Paul Bunions was about... ten hours? I still don't have Monarch of the Seven Kingdoms. Once again, it's about which activities you enjoy doing. Maybe these badges came easier for you than they did for me, but fox brushing just so happened to be an activity I enjoyed, so the badges really weren't very hard.

  • I enjoy it and find it soothing. I get 2 brushes going at once, which I alternate to compensate for the tiny cooldown, and I can happily hang solo in a preserve for ages, zoomed out in camera mode, gathering mass quantities of fibre.

  • I hate fox brushing ..and I get such a lot of lag too. *sigh* I so wish we got the alpacas. And no, more brushes does not do the "trick".
Posted 4 months ago by Lellie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • As an additional point, I agree with Justin that overall, the requirements for the top badge are modestly low, though I can see it being torturous if you hate the activity.

Realistically, though, we don't have to gun for all the badges right away. It wouldn't be very satisfying--to me, at least--to have every badge be easily attainable. There's such a huge sense of accomplishment to finally get one, whether it's through grinding or through little instalments of effort spread over time. I'd kinda like the opposite: higher badges. After playing for months, or soon to be a year since launch for some of us, how many thousands of piggies have we nibbled? How many eggs have we eaten? How much fox fibre could we amass in a year, even if we only lit a couple of baits a week?

  • I suck at fox brushing... my mouse movement is a bit jumpy which, on top of the lag, makes my success rate frustratingly low. That said, I do like seeing other interaction mechanics in the game and would like to see more of them. So I feel bad saying that I don't enjoy it because I'd hate for them to not continue experimenting along these lines. But, no, I do not enjoy it. I would go so far as to say I hate it. Even despise it. Certainly dread it.

I also agree that the reward does not match the effort - though I think that has as much to do with a lack of other interaction types making this one stand out as "difficult" or "tedious" as well as rewards being a bit too large for other bits which require little effort.

  • I can't brush foxes. I mean, I've tried, and I think I've gotten a badge or two out of it, but I have mobility issues, and I find that after a few minutes, my hand has seized up to the point where I can't do much of anything. So I gave it up and just started buying fiber when I need it.

I try not to need it, obviously.

  • The big problem for me is that there are too many animations involved (brush turning over, fiber deposited in bag, brush deposited in bag) and they each take way too long.  The number of times I could have brushed a fox but couldn't because of the slow animations far outnumbers the times I have actually brushed foxes.

I wouldn't say I hate it, but it is certainly very frustrating.

  • I like it. The only downside is it takes too long for the brush to "reload".

  • Hey, yay for the enjoyers! And thanks for the two-brush tip, I will definitely be trying that out.

And I'm not hating exactly on the interactive nature of it, I just really think as a "hit the moving target" interaction it's really awkward and lack luster compared to, oh who knows, dozens of other games I enjoy where twitch reflexes are paramount. Meaning, if TS is going to start introducing that component to Glitch I think it could be better executed and way more fun.

And as for those who really hate it I don't think that's a problem either because it finally gives the auctions a real
Posted 4 months ago by Hydi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Ugh, mobile interface cut me off. "I think it gives people a real reason to use the auctions." While all skills and resources are available to everyone there's no reason to buy things; but if you hate X activity and someone else loves it then the economy becomes more differentiated and robust -- which is a good thing.

  • I find it much easier on my desktop with a real mouse, as opposed to my netbook I play on most often. The 'touchpad' requires me to attempt a 2-handed operation, 1 to hold the button down, and the other do 'drive. I seem to have a very low success rate using the touchpad normally. It's not something I can 'grind' for long. I just do short stops now and then when in the neighborhoods.

    More, different, better..... Hail diversity!!!!!

  • Hydi-I enjoy it! I find the "hit the moving target" interaction a bit of a different kind of challenge. I like it better than the click and wait action of mining. Plus I think the foxes are cute. Does anyone else with small children (or who knows who Dora is), think that the foxes resemble Swiper?

  • I zoom out all the way and use two brushes, and I find fox-brushing to be a just fine activity. Much more entertaining than feeding sloths. :)
Posted 4 months ago by Drakani Subscriber! | Permalink
  • tip to avoid "brushing too fast" -- wait until you see the animation of the fiber moving into your bag, right as that happens, you should be good for the next brush.

  • Voluptua is the only one who has mentioned the camera mode trick. It *used* to be fun doing it that way but I couldn't get it to work the last couple times I tried. Was I just on some bad purple or is brushing in camera mode actually proper nerfed?
Posted 4 months ago by scragz Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The camera thing doesn't work any longer, as far as I know.

  • @Harley, I'd been wondering whether getting a proper mouse would help! I'm on a laptop with a touchpad myself, and it feels like it's a clunky operation a lot of the time. Maybe I'll look into a cheap USB mouse to improve my odds. (Right now about 300-400 fibers per bait is a good haul for me.)
Posted 4 months ago by Tathak Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I pretty much have to use a USB mouse when I go for foxbrushing on my laptop, and my hand/eye coordination isn't fast enough to get the fox more then 2-3 times reliably per bait, it seems. Still, when it's not lagging, it's not bad.
