Glitch crashing Windows Media Player (playing local files, not streaming)

If I can get any insight on this, I'd appreciate it.  The last time this happened it crashed so badly I thought I was going to end up doing a hard reset to get going again. Sometimes the WMP maximizes inappropriately and incompletely in front of Glitch in Google Chrome.  Escape sometimes drops it down again, and sometimes not.  I don't update WMP because I'm paranoid about licenses on my ripped music files.  I figure if I bought it on CD I should not ever be hassled over it, but obviously that isn't the way the world works...

I am pretty noobish about computer sci...astonishing considering I helped my Dad build a Heath-H89 when I was a teen and I've been at it ever since.  (HUNT THE WUMPUS!)  (ZORK!) (SEVEN CITIES OF GOLD, ON THE C64! SPACE TAXI!!!!!)

But when we upgraded our computers unexpectedly (to me) from DOS to WIndows in the middle of a busy semester, I threw up my hands and swore there was no point in learning all of this stuff.  I figure if I do invest energy in learning it, we're bound to end up with something totally different...

Anyway, I do realize it's probably a resource issue but I don't know where to start to help Glitch play well with others (WMP.)

  • Silky,

If indeed it's an issue of having failed to keep the app updated, have you considered using something like Winamp instead of Windows media player? I'm not *against WMP persay, but I do favor the third party players anyway, and I've been using Winamp for ... well, since it was first offered back in the 1990s, with virtually no issues. There are, of course, other alternative media players as well, Winamp is just one suggestion.

  • You should keep WMP upgraded, if only for security reasons; there was a critical security vulnerability in at least one past version.  I've never had an issue with any program hassling me about ripped music files, and I have the latest WMP.  It should not care about files that don't have DRM.

  • Okay, I'll get a third party player. My husband is adamant I not update WMP, don't know why.  Thanks!
