Posters

So I was trying to think of ways to raise awareness of a group earlier, and then it hit me: We need posters that we can attach to stuff. Notes are great and all, but they aren't eye-catching (and to be honest, they kind of look like trash littered onto the ground and don't really scream "This is worth looking at"). A poster would be instantly visible to any passer-by. They could be attached to standing items in the game (buildings, signposts, trees, etc...), and could have custom designs placed on them using some sort of drawing tools (it wouldn't have to recreate Photoshop with layers, effects, and all; a simple multicolored pencil and eraser would probably do, along with possibly the ability to add text). I wouldn't be able to make much use of this functionality, but I know of people who could. The result would be an interesting style of decoration that could be seen across Ur.

Additional considerations I thought of while pondering this (only one right now, but I'll probably edit this multiple times before anyone reads it):
If posters attached permanently to a surface, this would quite quickly become a problem. Perhaps they stay attached for one real-life day. This, however, would lead to a new problem: someone spends a lot of time designing a poster, then it's gone. Each player could possibly have a "library" of poster designs they've created, that they could apply to a Paper either with a quill, or a new item, a Printer. Or something like that.

Which would then raise another problem: people could spam their design onto every item they see. (possible solution: limit posters attachable to stuff per IRL day to one)

  • How about being able to post any Glitch snap or file photo onto a tree or note pole or something like that?

  • I like it :) One per person per day could become a scaling problem, small as it sounds though. If there ever comes a day when 10k distinct people play glitch on a given day... If even 5% post a poster that day that's still 500 posters O: 100 of which are likely in Cebarkul ;)

  • Pixlr blatantly "borrows" from Photoshop and gets away with it, so I bet the devs can come up with something familiar and easy to use. Maybe it would be out-of-game, like Wardrobe and Vanity?

  • Oh look, someone put a penis everywhere.

  • @diaveborn, Gwynne: Thanks!

    @AC2k: See Yarrun's comment. xD

@Liza: Well, only one poster would be able to be attached on any signpost, tree, etc... at any given time. Eventually, yes. Every signpost in the game would be covered with a poster at some time or another. First come, first serve I suppose. Kinda like the AL's. TS has stated that they aren't going to expand them, I believe.

@TCF: Ooh, nice! That would be awesome. Too bad it isn't open-source though. It would probably be a lot of work to make something that intricate; probably a lot more than TS would want to throw into making something so tangental to the purpose of the game.

@Yarrun: As long as it's just drawn penises, it wouldn't be much worse than the giant (and Kukubee-approved, if I recall correctly) Plexus penis.

  • Love the idea!!
One thing though: Even limiting to one poster per day would end up with spam. Perhaps a limited number of poster spots (or bulletin boards!) scattered around visible places in the world?

This would be a good spot to post posters. Subway stations!

  • Maybe a whole region or part of a region that we can truly help shape.... a place to put up whatever posters we want.  So those who want to see them can go there, and those that don't want to see them won't have to.

  • Posters would be great, but I agree that they should require some sort of limitation to avoid spamming Ur. Ideas at the top of my head include: (1) Poster spots / bulletin boards / poster regions; (2) "For rent" poster locations, which players have to shell out currants to post a poster; (3) The ability to post should be rewarded to glitchen only when they reach a certain level; (4) Posters would need the approval of five or more glitchen before it could be posted, though this has the possibility of being circumvented with alts; (5) Posters would need the bureaucratic hall's approval before getting posted; (6) and etcetera etcetera.

Personally, I would prefer announcements to appear as another tab under the map and teleport section, and would list announcements of the groups I have joined. Or if I click the group name in the sidebar, the chat window that appears shows a persistent announcement at the top (or another tab). Text for the announcement would be limited only to a certain number of characters. But that's another idea for a new ideas thread, so let's just stick to posters for the meantime. : )

  • Justin: Well, I imagine drawing tools would be more detailed than item-art.  And the penises would be much more frequent than the Plexus-etc stuff.   I love ideas like this as it seems like a great way to encourage and spread glitchcreativity but I do think it's not overly paranoid to say it could become a decently sized problem pretty quickly.

  • Now that I think about it, posting any random image is probably a bad idea.
