Rock Mining Etiquette

So I had an interesting experience in Ilmenskie Deeps this afternoon. I came up to a rock that two other players were currently mining and I began mining it as well. One fellow miner messaged me saying "3 players mining 1 rock at once? Really, Loe?". I didn't respond. A minute later, he messaged me again saying "Damn you, noob" and left the rock behind to try mining at a different location. Now, I know others have definitely been around Glitch longer than I have. But, in my opinion, 3 players mining 1 rock is fairly common (Especially in Ilmenskie). Am I way off track with this theory? Is there some rock mining etiquette that I wasn't aware of?

  • Um wow.  ??? I never heard of that, I mine with more than 2 players at once all the time and have never been told off.

I'm sorry that happened to you Loe.

  • The whole dynamic of mining is meant to encourage multiple participants. Interesting how some people claim ownership of resources in an MMO game and call others 'noob' for utilizing what they have staked out. I'm sure I grandfather him in glitch by quite a few months, and I would have done the same as you.

  • That's weird... I'd say the person that told you that is really the one acting like a "noob". They have absolutely no understanding of how cooperative mining works: More people mining a single rock gives you exponentially higher bonuses. I have never heard of anyone thinking 2 was better than 3, and it is definitely NOT common mining etiquette to demand that.

  • 3 miners on a rock gives excellent bonus.  Whoever that miner was, doesn't understand mining in glitch.  Their loss.

  • They're the ones who don't understand. after the big reset, mining was tweaked so the more ppl mining together, the bigger the benefit for everyone!

  • The big thing I see here, is that the other person was rude right off the bat.  If Glitch has a code of Etiquette, it is to 1) always be polite and 2) talk to the other person about the issue before you get mad.

There ARE folks who prefer to mine alone, but you'll usually get a nice request. Sorry you ran into a tool. The rest of us are happy to mine with you!

I keep running into people who want to mine alone but dont tell me until AFTER we have mined the rock. That boggles me.

  • Question....if you mine with other people, the rock get used up much more quickly than if you mine the entire rock yourself.  So does the bonus rock you get for mining with other people make up for that?  In other words, do you end up getting the same amount of rock?
Posted 13 months ago by Trekkie Gal Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I don't know the exact numbers, but I think if you mine with others, you'll end up expending less energy for the same amount of rock with the bonuses. I'm just thinking of my trips to Neva Neva, where I'll get 26 chunks in one go. I can't get that on my own.
Posted 13 months ago by Saiai Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Back in the days of yore, there were no bonuses for mining in a group, and every rock had exactly 50 chunks.  People could finish rocks off that other people were working on, and could basically "steal" chunks that the other player had found. This led to a lot of "one miner per rock" mining. There were lots of forum posts and in-game drama about people who mined the same rocks as other players, and also about players who would drain a rock down to 3 chunks and then leave it behind so that someone else had to waste their energy on a tiny haul.

Tiny Speck made some great tweaks to the mechanics so that it's better to mine in groups of 3+, and there's never a penalty for being the last person to mine a rock.  If you're in a large enough group the bonuses are extreme.  So, in general, people shouldn't feel bad about jumping in on mining a rock that's already being mined.  In Ilemenskie and Callopee/Pollokoo I pretty much expect that anybody and everybody may join in on any rock I'm working on.

When I want to mine alone (and sometimes I do when I'm distracted by work and can't keep up with a fast-paced group of miners) I usually go to areas like Groodle Heights or Bortola where are are fewer rocks.
Posted 13 months ago by mirth Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @trekkie gal - No, in my experience, it will not make up for it.  You will get more rock overall if you mine it solo.  The difference is the energy expended.  In a large group, like you find in Neva Neva, you can mine the same amount of chunks for about 80% less energy use.  If you buy all your food, that is a big bonus to profit.

To the OP, I don't think you were wrong either.  I am not exactly a veteran, but it seems to me most glitchs, myself included, do not care if people join in on a rock.

  • Usually when people tell me to go away, I respond with something along the lines of:

"If you wanted to be left alone, you picked the wrong game :)"

Sometimes I'll just hand them things randomly too, or strike up a conversation.  I'm usually not mining to utterly maximize profit (I gave up on money a long time ago...)

  • In addition to what's already been said, the idea that one person will get more ore from mining a rock alone is flawed due to the fact that it assumes nobody else is mining other rocks. If two people mine two rocks with 50 ore in them, both will get a total of 50, sure, but neither will get any ore at all from the other's rock. If both players mine both rocks together, they may get less per rock, but they'll each end up with higher totals overall. Each additional player added to the equation increases the benefits of working together rather than apart for that very reason.

    Suggested Answer....
No you dont get the same amount of rock as bonus, not nearly.
However, picking some numbers out of the air as example. If you are mining a street and so are 2 other people and for example there are 3 rocks on that street and each rock takes 6 hits before its gone...

If all 3 of you mine one rock together, you'll each get 2 hits, plus a bonus, then move onto the next rock, get 2 hits plus bonus, and then do the last rock get 2 hits and a bonus. Each player got 6 hits and 3 bonuses in total before all the rocks were gone.

If each player mines a separate rock, then you just each got 6 hits.

Overall you'll get more rock cos of the bonuses by mining together than you would have mining seperately, its only when you consider the larger situation that the reason the bonuses help becomes apparent. Because the rock vanishes quicker, mining together, you can mine more in the same time so the bonuses then increase your output.

  • SacredBob: the balance seems to be: mine more efficiently (more rock per energy spent) or mine more efficiently (get a larger portion of each rock node mined, and potentially spend less time mining.)

I appreciate that the game supports both modes of mining.  Personally, sometimes I like to camp out and mine with a bunch of people, not having to go anywhere and having time to perform other crafting tasks in between spawns.  Other times, I don't feel like monitoring chat for long conversations and having to jump quickly on short notice and prefer to just tool around the caverns and caves or the sunny mountainsides mining whatever I come across.  I know that some people like to combine both by mine-training around the caves, chatting with each other and crafting while also moving around and grabbing whatever nodes you come across.  There is no one true way to mine, is I think the right answer here, and we have to be respectful that our way isn't going to be the right way for everyone else we come across in the mines.  But they are big enough for all of us, and when they aren't I'm sure we can imagine some new ones.

  • i think some people are basing their analyses on the result for a single rock.

that's just silly, because when a rock is gone, you simply move on. the rock you were mining will come back later.

    soon.

  • Isn't it true that the more people mining a particular rock, the bigger the bonuses? This is why we have mining parties in Ajaya Bliss - 15 people on a rock, it disappears instantly, very little energy spent, but you get tons of rock. He should be thanking you for your help!

  • Before the game went public, I always mined alone (except for the quest to help others), but right now it's impossible, so I do what I can. Sparkly rocks are way to hard to find, so when I see one, I go for it, I don't care how many people are there, a chunk it's better than nothing.
Posted 13 months ago by Natalia Subscriber! | Permalink
  • When I first started playing I had the same mentality. My very first sparkly rock gave me 150 rocks, (I think that was all one rock, if I remember correctly). And I never got that many before since every single time I mine, someone jumps on a rock with me.

One think that particularly bothered me, when I had very low skill was miners who would jump on a rock with me and get 5 hits while I struggled with 2. I felt that I was getting the short end of the stick, every time! I understood that there's a bonus, but the my skilled miner got more than twice than I did and I was usually there first!

I just trained up mining and shrugged it off.

  • I'm a solo miner. I never go off into mining parties. I'm never in NN or AB. I rarely interact with others in the mine (unless they do something nice for me or I see them struggling or dropping things). However, I never ever expect to be left alone in the mines. People often help me mine. I often help others mine if they're at the rock I want. And aside from an extra keystroke required if someone gets on the same side of the rock as me (double clicking my pick inevitably moves me too far away from the rock for it to work the next time), I am unlikely to find myself feeling inconvenienced at all and don't have any problem filling my bags with rock, despite my currently "slow" mining skill (at mining III I still feel like a turtle compared to the people helping me).

Having said all of that, I've helped and been helped by groups of people who have played Alpha (before my time) and Beta (my time) and have yet to hear one of them call anyone a N00b for joining a group of two miners. I think you're safe. You just found a bad apple who wasted their precious mining time trying to lecture you in a misguided way.

  • In every other mmo I've played, taking from someone elses resource is considered extremely rude. Also, it can be hard for someone just beginning, because the resources seem to be sucked up by those with higher skills. It's understandable where the possessiveness comes from. Sharing resources does take some getting used to.

In places like Groddle (where newer Glitchens tend to frequent) I usually am a bit more hesitant to jump in because of the skill difference. But in most places, randomly mining with others is perfectly fine.

Usually people who mine with me get a hug and/or random kindness if they don't run away to fast. If feeling really generous, I may even throw an Earthshaker their way :P
Posted 13 months ago by Tilwithe Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Unless I'm in a locked sparkly place like Ajaya (which I love) I do tend to prefer mining alone.

When I do this, I mine with earthshakers. I carefully plot out exactly how many rocks I need, where they are, and how fast I can move from rock to rock when one is finished, to maximize profit from the shaker. Someone jumping on the rocks I've planned out to hit throws this off and leaves me with excess shaker time that I waste finding another rock.

Do I get irritated? Sometimes, maybe, but I'm human. I move on and dismiss the irritation as my OCD kicking in too hard and I give it a kick back.

Thus my tendency to -not- jump on a rock another player is mining on their own, no matter how tempting the sparkly is, just in case they're using shakers like I do. If there's a group though, I'm tempted by the bonuses, but still usually shy away from it.

Mostly, it's the need to rush and keep pace with someone who is usually much faster than me, higher skilled than me, and apparently less laggy than me. I don't like the rush, I like to mine leisurely. So if people jump on the I'm mining and I don't like how I'm feeling, I go find another rock. They have every right to every rock, same as me, same as you. Whatever rock we want. All the rocks everywhere!

Not like the game perpetually generates them or anything, psh! /sarcasm

  • @OP: You were completely in the right in that Glitch encourages and rewards those Glitchens who mine together.

The rude individual who called you a 'noob' obviously hasn't ever been mining in AB or Neva Neva. Yet they insinuate that you are unfamiliar with the game. Ironic.

Before every Miner and his dog learnt Eyeballery, I used to give a shout-out in local whenever I saw a sparkly spawn so that people would join me and 'help'.
