What is the poin of Glitch?

Hello,

First I will apologize for my bad English, I hope you can understand me a bit.

My question is; what is the point of Glitch? I don't mean it in a rude way, but I don't really understand what to do. Just walking around squeezing chickens and pet some trees, without a known what I'm doing. I like the game, but every time I try to play Glitch I get that boring feeling. I don't know if I will still play it because I don't know the point of it. Don't misunderstand me, I like the gameplay and the open-world, but I just miss the whole point of it.

I hope you can help me, and I hope you can convince me to continuing playing Glitch.

Greetz, Roger :)

  • it's a social game; talk to some people and it'll be a lot more fun. glitch isn't meant to be played alone. :3

  • I also pointed out the social focus in another post, but was corrected by several people who said they were asocial and still long-time players. So, it's a silly and creative game that's mostly easy to play.

However, I wouldn't have stayed nearly as long without the great group of friends I've made here.

  • There isn't much of an ultimate goal to the game, although I'm optimistically reading into the direction the game is going and stuff stoot's said that building and shaping the world will play a much larger role in Glitch in the future (e.g., the "infinite streets" post of his I've quoted time and time again).

  • The point: Use Glitch like a play space. There is no winning or losing, just experiencing. Follow your muse, your dreams. Follow a path that tickles your fancy. And then follow another.

Interact with the world and with people. Use the tools in the game however you wish (although using them for kindness usually will get you "farther" than using them for other purposes... but, hey, use the tools as you wish).

If it isn't entertaining you, find something in the game that does. In fact, I am not sure Glitch IS a game. There are game aspects, yes. But I contend it is actually a toy. And I mean that as a compliment. Star Wars action figures are not a game. Barbies are not a game. Wooden blocks are not a game. They are toys we use to explore our own imagination. That is how I approach Glitch.

  • Its a sandbox game -- even when infinite streets / feats come in to add more depth to the endgame, there are no concrete goals, and relatively few gating requirements to get through to access all gameplay. By not forcing you into a predefined definition of "winning", there is a space left for you to make that choice.

I see the game is really a way to explore ones personal ideas behind truth and beauty. Do you agree with Nichee, and into ruthless maximizing? Are you a social butterfly, who favors chat over hoarding a few more [stuffs]? Do you find beauty in efficiently meeting goals?

  • You sort of have to decide your own goal for the game. Look at your quest list. Do you want to try to complete all your quests? Some people do that. Check out the "Achievement" badges in the encyclopedia. Do you want to try to get all the achievements, or all the ones in a specific category? Some people do that. Do you want to build a tower, or get specific furniture to decorate your house? Work towards that. Earn currants to buy what you want, or learn the skills you need to make it yourself. What level player are you? Do you like leveling up? You could try to get as much iMG as you can ever day that you play.

You may also want to go to groups page and look up the Sandbox group. They have lots of neat ideas for making your own goals.

If you play for a few weeks/months, and find you're still getting that bored feeling, then feel free to move on and try a different game. There's no rule stating that once you start playing Glitch you aren't aloud to quit. Games are meant to be fun, so have fun!

  • Hi DonRoger and welcome to Glitch!
    Your English is great!
I like Lord Bacon-o's point of it not being a won or lose type game.  I see that you are a fairly new player - don't give up.  It will hook you one way or another - you have so much to still experience and discover.  There is so much to this game and everyone plays it a bit differently.  You'll find your own grove too!
It's a great and honest question to ask!  Keep playing and ask again at level 20 :-D

  • Hi, DonRoger!

First of all, let me compliment you on your English. Well done! English is a difficult language to learn.

I am a "newbie." I started playing Glitch on August 5. Several times I wanted to quit because Glitch doesn't have a manual, and I have difficulty learning things unless there are written instructions. Plus, even though I had "game friends," I was afraid to ask them for help and guidance because they were strangers and might get annoyed. That is not the case in Glitch. Many times I have been surprised by the helpfulness and generosity of the players.

Do you know what is the most fun thing to do? Get together on your or a friend's property (called ________'s street) and instant message each other. You get to see that player's character, and also get to socialize (this, more than anything else, helped me immensely).

Although I am still a "newbie" I would like to be a friend of yours. I think I could help you in many ways. I don't know that much, but together we can find answers.

  • DonRoger, I agree with most previous answers.

What I can add is my personal experience. I tried Glitch first to explore the various places/situations/stories.
When I saw it all (or most of it anyway) I delved into quests and skill building.
When I finished them I started collecting badges.
I am now in a phase where the only badges I am still missing are very grindy-boring ones, so I tend to use Glitch as a zen pastime, enjoying the L-Dopamine rush of instant and pointless validation after any action I take.
And I am waiting for more stories and more things to discover - which TS are kindly providing.

  • I didn't understand the point either when I first starting playing but I knew there was something about this game that I liked so I continued to play.

I'm still here a year later. I can't really tell you the point. Just do your quests and eventually it will have a point for you.

  • Don, everone here is going far into more detail then necessary :D. The point of glitch is to have fun. you do what you want when you want to do it. Why? because you can. its a game were one can just chill and relax without worrying about a thing. theres no wrong way to play. no penalties or anything to fear. sure if you don't eat or drink you end up in hell, But hey you can just waltz right back out. Plus if you haven't realized yet everyone is super friendly. No one is Telling you to play glitch. Were inviting you :)

  • +100 to Lord Bacon-O and a slab of Bacon as well. The point is, is that there is NO POINT! It is just supposed to be whatever you want it to be as long as you are having fun. If you are not then the game is not for you. Collecting cherries leads to being able to make other fruit, which leads to other foods and drink. You will need these to eat if you choose to mine. When you mine you use the ore to make stuff. So instead of a straight path there are many choices kind of like a starburst. Welcome to the world of UR!

  • Hello Glitchers!

Thank you for making my question clear, I'm glad you all took time to help me. I did not expect this much, enthusiastic and helpful answers. Its a nice thought when you gaming without any worries or other things what you really need to think of.
I have a different look at the "game" now, thank you very much all!

  • Sandbox games like Glitch with emergent goals are borderline examples of games; indeed, some think they are more like toys than games, as Lord Bacon-O has pointed out. A famous example is Will Wright, the designer of SimCity, calling it a software toy.

  • The point of Glitch is to have fun, socialice, and to nibble on pigs. :P Sorry for spelling errors. The point of Glitch is whatever you want it to be! Also like daniel5457 there could be no point of Glitch, just have fun! But you still need to survive because if you die too many times within one day... Well.... You'll see. :)

  • The point of Glitch is so you can learn to spell "Glitch".  Yea you passed !!! Now that pressure is gone. Just go ahead and enjoy the game.

  • Don use it to make friends around the world! There are families playing that use it as a way to "see each other" that live hundreds even thousands of miles apart. Sure there's video chat programs but all you get to do is sit and look at each other, with Glitch you get to interact, play a game, and chat. Try looking through the groups page at the top of the screen and see if there are some you might seem interested in and join, there's no contract saying you have to stay once you join. Hope you have fun !!!

*wants to splank the l33t speak off the screen so bad* !!! :p

  • There's a point to Glitch? Funny, I just thought it was a fun way to waste some time.

But if it must have a point for you, try setting some goals. Like, a goal could be to save up a million currants (which was my goal, and I did) or collect all the music boxes (gives you a trophy), unlock all the skills (still havnt done that yet) and so on and so forth.

Its a great way to spend some time, and make new friends from around the world.

But as far as an actual point? An actual way of winning the game, so to speak? I dont think Glitch has that.

  • There is no point. Does there need to be a point? Glitch simply is.

But will somebody please tell me what 'diddy wah diddy' really means?

  • What interesting ideas!

Yes, your English is very good.  I understood what you were saying.  (so, now I love Andromeda!)

I think for me, the game works for several main reasons.

Reason One:  I have a crazy and wild imagination, and I have always had this.  I don't need goals or even toys or plans, I am happy using my imagination and creating my own fun.  Therefore, this game gives me lots of room to play, think, not think and do things.

Reason Two:  I don't like games that have an end.  Okay, okay, I did love stratego and risk as a kid but they were very open to the imagination so maybe that is what I liked about them.  But, I don't want to play until I've reached one specific goal and then be done.  That is why I laugh every time I see the "Wait, you almost won the game" thing at the end...hahaha, there is not winning!

Reason Three:  I don't like shooting imaginary beings or items.  Yes, fine, you are right, I liked Asteroids as a kid and that had shooting.  But, It was sooo far from looking like I was shooting anything real that I don't think that counted.  In today's modern world, I don't like shooting and Glitch has not shooting.  That is a big reason to play, for me at least.

Reason Four:  I like the way the game looks, I like playing dress-up with my character which is odd because I never liked dolls as a kid, well, I loved my GI Joe doll but, mostly I didn't like dolls or dress-up.  Right now, I like making my glitch look like me.  Sometimes, I look at silly photo of me in outfits that I've made my Glitch wear and I think, "I'm so cute.  My Glitch is so cute".  I know, I'm weird.

Reason Five:  I love all the little actions.  I even bought a philosopher doll just so I could pull the string and make it say things.  Hahahaha, I pulled the string and it spoke!!!  Pulls string again....hahahaha!

Reason Six:  Yes, I am socially awkward and this is my very first ever MM, um, what is it called?  A game with a bunch of players you can interact with??  massively multiplayer online game, that is it!  What was I saying?  Oh, yes, I am not good with people but I still like some of the interaction with other players.  I like typing things out and knowing that someone, somewhere is reading this.  I like going back to re--read what I posted.  I am NOT an egomaniac!!!  I just like doing that.  Sometimes, I'll chat it up, sometimes I'll follow a player, sometimes I'll lock myself in my glitch house and play from there, ahhh, all alone!  But, somehow, it all works.

And, so you know, if the reasons people play for are not of interest to you, you don't have to keep playing.  You might find another game you  like more.  No one will be offended.  My guy doesn't play anymore and no one thinks he is wrong.  Well, okay, I think he is wrong but that is just because I'm me and I am weird.  But there are lots of goal oriented games out there that do keep going and lots of goal oriented games that have endings.  Maybe this one just isn't for you.

But, if you try it a little more, now that you have some view points from other players, maybe you will find a new interest in playing this game??

I thought of some Glitch goals:
expanding and creating lovely front and back yards
expanding and creating a gigantic house
creating a tower and doing something different with it, like a museum or a story
    obtaining achievements
joining groups for play within the game (oooh, I want to join the streaker group!!)
    trying on a negative persona
trying on an overly positive persona and giving things  away

I don't know, that is all I've got and dinner is ready soon.

I hope you do find a way to make it work.
And, sorry for MY bad english but I am not going to edit this gigantic word mess!!
