To whomever took all my street creator trophy pieces and left me 1 butterfly: I am a sad Glitch now D'8

So I just rejoined Glitch after a 2 month hiatus while the new changes were happening.

I read many forum posts about the changes, and they looked very cool, so I came back to try them out for myself.

After exploding my giant moving box all over my floor, I set about once again reorganizing all my stuff into little piles all over the place to make managing the reduction in size from a 3-floor mansion to a starter home manageable.

One thing I did not understand, is how public your home street is.  I read about the signposts, and how to transport from one home street to another by adding friends.  Given that I didn't have anybody on there yet, I assumed no one could find my street.  So I set about using the loooong street I had dumped all my iMG into, as a second storage and reorganizing area while I gathered the skills and mats to expand the floors of my house, intending to put everything back in my house once huge-ified, before adding my friends to the signpost and being a social glitch once again.

I now know this is untrue, because when I logged in this morning, someone had 'visited' me, and took a huge chunk of my belongings, most importantly (to me) ALL my "Street Creator" trophy parts.

I don't care about the other stuff, I have a zillion currants and can buy back whatever else over time.  But those trophies took a huge amount of effort to watch for streets under construction, gather all the mats, fight 2000 other glitches for a spot at the Project sign, and contribute huge amounts to.

Now I have none.  It's my fault, and maybe everyone else who played around the conversions but me realized streets are now accessible by your profile, but for the other people who have been out of game for a while, it might be a good idea to add something to the 'welcome back' messages to this effect.

If you took my stuff, I want you to know it wasn't intentionally left out in a public space, and I'd really appreciate it if you would return it!  Although I don't blame you for understanding the rules which I now see are pretty clear about it in other forum posts.

Thanks for the butterfly, but I would like my Street Creator Trophy pieces back =)

  • Aw sorry that happened, Sprock. I too just returned from a long hiatus, but fortunately no goods were lost in my absence.

Tell you what - I have some street creator trophies, and I'm fairly certain that I'll never finish them or piece them together. If you don't get your trophies back, you can have mine.

  • You know what sucks even more is I doubt the bottom feeder that stole your stuff comes on these forums. We should all try to spread the word and hopefully that person has a concious and returns the stuff.

  • I feel for you. There should be something done about "public access" to our property. I also had no idea that the area outside my home was free game for any thief to come along and raid. Fortunately, I "only" lost 3 full large plots of herbs before I realized. I could have lost a couple of dozen emblems and dozens of tinctures if the &)@#&@# scumbag that raided me WHILE I WAS THERE hadn't been busy stealing my herbs.

Tiny Speck, if you're reading this, which I doubt, PLEASE make it an option to have home streets private i.e. only accessible to FRIENDS and not just anyone. If you can make it so that people who have private streets can't access anyone else's home street unless they're also friends, that'd be great. Some of us have lives and don't devote hundreds of hours to reading every single word on the forums, change releases and chat, so we're not up on every single little tiny detail of Glitch.

Basically my entire property is messed up now. I'll have to wait for everything to decay and redo it, losing out on tens of thousands of imagination because I had no idea that, for example, herb plots outside the house were basically community herb gardens (which is complete and utter bullshit, by the way). One's entire property should only be accessible to FRIENDS, not the entire world.

  • Whoah, that must have been hard to lose such valuable items.  I only leave pick ups outside my house for others to take if wanted.  Whoever found them street roaming must have thought they'd won the lottery or perhaps assumed  that you'd quit the game and left everything outside?  I know that's what I would have thought had it been a big pile.  It's certainly how I plan to exit the game when I've run my own course with it.

I'm outside your house atm...waiting for you with some storage boxes to help with your moving in! Hope you turn up soon lol

  • The signpost needs to have some options:

    1) Only owner allowed on property
    2) Owner and friends only
    3) Owner, friends, and then everyone else

I think another issue to compound problems with changes is that they might not really be noted when someone returns to Ur after a long absence.

  • Not sure what I am doing wrong but my post won't post. Weird. I agree we need a better way to let people know what's public/private, but I would hate to turn Ur into a gated community. I would not want to be able to bar people from coming on my street, nor do I like the idea of being prevented from exploring. It just needs to be easier to understand what people can and can't do on our street. And people who do understand need to not keep tempting fate by purposely (not that this is the case here. Just sayin') leaving thing out and then being surprised when it's taken.
Posted 7 months ago by Axa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The problem here is that spreading all your stuff out in the street is a behavior seen from people who are quitting the game.  How is a more or less casual player supposed to know the difference?
Posted 7 months ago by WalruZ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Again, for the record -- in response to Kelti's request -- I much prefer my front street being open to the entire Glitch population.  It's wonderful to have a public space to share the wealth that I wish to share.  And, the emergent behaviors of a group that understands and utilizes these spaces has been wonderful to be part of (for the most part).

TS does make it fairly easy to stay on top of these changes, even if you do have a life outside of Glitch.  You can get most of the important details from the original Staff posts, and from the Twitter style ticker on the side.  These kinds of misunderstandings only serve to punctuate the importance of paying attention to these two things!  It only takes a couple minutes before logging in to see if there's anything new, and to learn about it.

  • Wow, sorry to hear what happened. That is really bad luck! Visiting random streets via the profile pages a glitch can end up anywhere and it just happened that your street was hit on the wrong day.

I really feel we have gotten the best of both worlds; A public street where we can share resources and bump into others, and a private space which we control fully.

As for staff reading the forum: If you have any doubt that they are here and listening then you really haven't been around much.

  • I do think there should be some indication that streets are public, somewhere, but I do not think there should be other options for increased privacy.  A player who could shut off all access to her street would essentially have a backyard with 17 extra resource nodes -- I think there's a reason our backyards stretch less than our streets, and I don't think anyone is intended to have exclusive private access to 17 street resources.

I also imagine it's not as simple as just providing a "privacy" switch.  It would probably involve recoding the entire friend system -- something a vocal group has requested, but many others are just as adamantly against.

  • First off, I am really sorry that you weren't aware, and I think the person that took something that obviously wasn't something just left out for sharing is a ... well, a word I won't say here in the forums.

HOWEVER, that said, I like front yards being public and wouldn't want to see it changed. they have changed specific things to "lock", such as icons, feeders, etc. I think that's reasonable.

  • WalruZ, the more pressing question Sprockett was trying to get across was, why weren't we told just how public our Home Streets were? It had every appearance of being an extension of our personal space--we shelled out currants, iMG and credits to personalize it. There was no word during any of the process to upgrade our Home Streets warning us that, even though we had almost the exact same options as upgrading the locked-down backyard, 95% of everything we placed in the front of the house was up for grabs *by almost everyone in the game*. If we'd had that information, we would have planned accordingly from the start.

And yes, I do read the forums on occasion. The explanation that "anyone who can access your home street" would be able to use things in your yard was a bit...unclear in my opinion. I really had no idea that meant "anyone who clicks on your profile that you haven't blocked" until much later.
Posted 7 months ago by ~Alice~ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Really sorry to hear about the loss of your things! I have noticed that in my exploring through the home streets of others many people are not happy to have anyone show up when they are there. I think they forget that the street is public and feel my presence is an intrusion. I always try to explain that I just like to see what others have done with their spaces, get ideas for my own space, and see what their gnomes say...(very entertaining)! I like the freedom of the exploration! Reading your post makes me feel sad because I can now understand why others are wary of strangers on their streets! Hope this doesn't lead you to mistrust everyone!

  • I don't care if casual players "aren't supposed to know the difference" with respect to things outside one's home or not. A decent person doesn't take things that aren't theirs. That's just how it is. Either you're a thief or you're not. "Hey free stuff!" is the sign of a shitty, shitty person, in real life or in a game.

Having my street public should be an opt-in system. If people are setting up resource routes that's great for them. As I said, if my street is private and that excludes me from visiting other people's streets, FINE. I'd really prefer it that way. The housing update changed a lot of things. Why shouldn't we be able to spend our imagination the way we want to? If I want a lot of herb and garden spots, that's entirely allowed within the system as set up.

Community herb gardens still exist. Why make people's home streets into community herb gardens as well, if the person makes an herb plot outside? That just doesn't make sense. If I have a garden in my front yard in real life, you can bet I'll be pissed off if someone raids it. Of course, in real life there are penalties for doing that sort of thing, like getting hit with a rake. Because this is a game with no drawbacks for stealing people's belongings, people will of course steal because that's human nature.

Once again, Glitch has proven itself to have the worst player community of any game I've ever played. Shame on anyone who steals other people's belongings. Too bad people have no sense of shame anymore :(

  • Bravo Kelti.  I have had to poison I don't know how many trees that were planted by others on my home street.  I've even resorted to posting gnomes, leaving notes saying DO NOT PLANT, and yet they continue to do so.  The name of the street is Mer Maid's Home Street.  Shouldn't that mean that it's my street?  I don't appreciate having to poison trees that I neither wanted or planted.

  • Thanks all for your kind words!

Just to be clear, I don't think TS did anything wrong - I like the idea of public streets, and the benefits probably outweigh the risks.  It's just a bad confluence of events where I had been away, needed organization space, happened to spend my iMG on the street rather than house, and thought no one could find my street until I expanded my signpost.  (An additional disclaimer in the 'welcome back' note wouldn't hurt, through, and wouldnt change any mechanics of how they've set the new streets up.)

The old 'city block' streets were also public too, and pig-stealing and whatnot was always a bit of a problem, but of course I never would have left the trophies out on one of those streets.  It's just disconcerting because Glitch travel has always worked by connecting directly from street/signpost to street/signpost via a logical chain - so it is a pretty big change just to be able to freely port to visit anyone you want.  But again, not necessarily bad.

Thanks especially to genjibeat, Jessenya, and Arabesque for the kind offers.  I had 16 pieces, I was saving them un-trophified to hopefully trade my extras with others who had odd numbers to get the full set, like many do for emblems.  But I wouldn't want to take anyone else's, unless you're not wanting them for some reason.  (Someone mentioned they're gone for good - does this mean they said there woul be no more Street projects anymore? I realy hope not.  It's like violence-free raiding!)

I fully believe someone just thought I was quitting the game, and I wouldn't fault them for thinking so given that the streets are publicly accessible - I might even have done the same (although I would probably leave a note as a 'receipt' just in case I was wrong).  So if you're reading this, don't worry I'm not mad - and I will shower you with rainbows if you return them!

The best way to help is just to keep spreading the word to newbies or recently returning players.  And, if you happen to hear someone talking about the 'windfall of trophies they just found on a quitting player's street' feel free to steer them to this post, or me.  Hopefully good karma will help them find their way back to me - the kind community is the best part of Glitch anyways, imo  =)

  • Sprockett — I am sorry that happened to you!

And, I agree that there needs to be better messaging both about (a) how things work in general and (b) when major changes occur.

Everything is a bit messy right now since we are in the middle of major changes, but (a) will be taken care of in the new tutorial/introduction to the game (players will be taken to their home street and the rock will explain how everything works before the house is even imagined) and (b) we are working on an announcement system so that people are made aware of significant changes when they log in.

  • As for home streets being mostly public: we are unlikely to change this. However, we will be letting you create more spaces which can be both public and private so if don't want people on your home street, you can always leave it completely empty and bare.

  • I think private streets would make this into a different game, and I like the game as it is.  On the other hand, there needs to be a better way than reading every blessed thing in this forum for people to find out important stuff, such as that people can pick up and carry off most items dropped on a home street.

When I have maybe a couple of hours a week that I can play Glitch, that time is precious. I don't want to have to spend half of that time or more reading the forums.

The game should explain itself better. If home streets are going to work this way, people should see a description of their home street that includes "Anyone can visit this street by using your profile page."  People should see a description of the signpost that says "Adding your friends gives you quick access to their home streets. This will not add you to your friends' signposts, but anyone who wishes can visit your street by using your profile page." These descriptions should pop up the first time or the first couple of times people enter their home street, click on the signpost, etc.

Also, the first time or the first couple of times someone drops something on their home street, there should be a message advising them that anyone will be able to pick up that item -- and there should be an "OK" button that has to be clicked. Same thing for the first time or first couple of times someone puts a resource on their street.

  • " As for home streets being mostly public: we are unlikely to change this"

Then I am unlikely to support Glitch with a subscription. You have made a system that is one-sided and unfair. People can steal my belongings with no consequences, poison my trees with no penalty, collect resources that I paid for with imagination I earned and spent, and you expect me to sit idly by with a shit-eating grin as that happens?

No. Hell no. While Glitch has a lot of creativity in design, if you as designers have intentionally set up a system where players can steal with no negative consequences, then you have done a piss-poor job of design. This is unacceptable and it's not just me saying this, it's dozens if not hundreds of people.

If you have made Glitch so that people want to spend time exploring it, creating and collecting things, then why force them to hide their creations in their homes, inaccessible to anyone but themselves and friends with keys? People should be able to have their home be something they can enjoy both inside and outside. I have ways of defending my property in real life, whether fences, alarms, dogs or what have you. I can call the police if there's an intruder on my property. In Glitch I have to store anything of value in my home like a dragon building a hoard. If you're trying to make a game fun for people, this isn't the way to do it for me and many others.

You give us imagination to make our homes and make upgrades. My imagination doesn't include strangers robbing me. Poorly done, sir. Poorly done indeed.

  • Thank you, thank you for that response Stoot!

I for one am very much in favor of home streets being public (with the few great exceptions you've already made ie. trees can't be poisoned, RHK can't be taken).

I haven't set my home street up yet (been too busy decorating my house) but when I do I want everything to be there for people to share. I really hope there are enough people who agree with me to balance out the vocal few who want to keep all the resources to themselves.

And to Sprockett I'm so very sorry someone took your street trophy pieces. I know I would be heartbroken if I lost mine. There definitely needs to be an in game warning about the public-ness of home streets really soon so no one else loses precious personal items.

  • @Stoot: Thanks for the response!  I think no matter what you end up changing, some people will be very for and against it.  But that just shows you've built a game worth caring about.

Off topic: You know what I'd like even more than to have my Street Creator Trophy Parts replaced?  More Street Projects to build!  The collaborative elements of the game (Rook attacks, parties, street projects, group quests like the teleportation one, etc.) are the best parts of the game.  I'd love to see more KoL style collaborative end-game elements (group dungeons where you craft things together instead of spamming DoTs and heals?  I'd do it!)

It was really exciting a few months ago when during one long weekend I would stay up late with others in various channels just holding our breath for the next 'Under Construction" sign to open up!  I hope you haven't done away with them =)

@Kelti: It's too bad, but griefing is more or less a part of MMO life and it's probably going to exist in some form, even in Glitch, forever - just like in real life.  To take away the ability to annoy people in any way, would also take away the ability to have fun (as confusing as that sounds) because of how related they are to freedom.  It sounds like they've tried hard to bridge the public/private gap, and you have to admit, it's a tricky problem.  Some people want to have piles of food for newbies to take.  Some people want to build elaborately decorated pieces-of-art streets.  Some people just want more organizing room!  Seems like a design challenge that deserves more credit than a 'poorly done, sir.'

That said, it's not that I disagree with your sentiment - it stinks to have yoru trees poisoned, or your herbs stolen, but it seems like they listen closely to feedback and will be adding more clarity where grey areas are found, which makes the game more engaging for me on a meta-game level than any other I've played.  We do have to take responsibility for our own actions, though, and our effect on the community (ie, I admit leaving the trophies out was my fault - not Stoot's).

Karma: it's a force of nature!

  • Kelti: I'm sorry that you are displeased with this. To me, it seems pretty obvious that you DO have a way to keep people from stealing your things; put them in your house, or in your backyard. I do not display anything in my RL front yard that I would be irreparably harmed if it went missing, and such is the same in my Glitch yard.

  • If the only way to keep one's items from being at risk of being stolen is not to put them on one's street, then the back yards need to be made as expandable in area as the streets are now.

  • I didn't like the way "my street" was originally...it was too public for my taste when peeps could come along and do whatever they wanted.
I love to share but was sorely disappointed when others could change what I had done to my street by poisoning, taking things that they knew wasn't intended for them to take and just being royal PITAs!!  So, I had decided before the reset, that I wouldn't even bother with my street.
But, since they've changed a few things and made it feel more like it truly is "MY' street, I'm having a blast working hard to get everything done that I need to be able to set it up the way I want so that others can enjoy it!!

@ stoot - So excited to hear that we'll have even more room!!
Will that be for both, front streets and backyards? I would love to be able to place, at least, one of every resource in both areas. And my piggies would love you best for it, I think 8^D

  • Kelti: I...feel like you're missing the point of Glitch?
I set up a bunch of plots in my /home street with my own iMG and resources so I could join a resource route, specifically so I could allow strangers to come tromp around my street and harvest these trees.  I have garden plots and some more resources and whatnot in my private backyard, for my use only.

The thing is, there already IS a system of public vs. private set in place in the game: the street is public and the house is private (or locked to keyholders).  If you don't want to utilize this system, I understand it.  Different strokes for different folks.  But claiming the system ecourages stealing 'with no negative consequences' is extremely unfair when you're attempting to use the system for something other than what it was designed to do.

Also, as someone who has worked in retail and the service industry for far too long, I am always really, really unimpressed whenever a customer makes a threat along the lines of 'WELL CLEARLY YOU DON'T WANT MY MONEY' when you're asking for a service from a business that they don't actually provide, as if withholding your few dollars will suddenly make them change their mind.
    Reeeeally unimpressed.

    ANYWAY.

Sprockett, it is with my sincerest hope that you get your trophies returned to you.  I wish it's something that I could contribute to getting you a new one of, but since a new trophy can't be made out of currants or resources, I am at a loss there.  I hope my wishes will suffice. :/

  • Man, I can't believe some of the replies this is getting. I feel bad for having shared my bad experience with thieves in Glitch, but I'm getting a little tired of this "ha ha, fuck you" attitude I'm hearing from just about everyone.

    To address "Classical" who said

"Kelti: I...feel like you're missing the point of Glitch?I set up a bunch of plots in my /home street with my own iMG and resources so I could join a resource route, specifically so I could allow strangers to come tromp around my street and harvest these trees.  I have garden plots and some more resources and whatnot in my private backyard, for my use only."

Congratulations. I really don't care what you do with your home street. This isn't about your home street. This is about MY home street and the home streets of everyone else who has agreed that they don't like being stolen from. Nobody asked what you want to do with your home street.

As far as customers "threatening" businesses, maybe you should get off your high horse and think for a bit. Tiny Speck is letting people play for free. There is also a system in place to subscribe and support the game. This system includes special incentives that people not subscribing cannot get.

Instead of "ha ha, fuck you" as an attitude, and being ignorant in assuming that I'm asking for something the company doesn't provide, a smart person might think "Hey, you know, there's something to be said for providing privacy settings as a perk for a subscriber. This isn't just an isolated incident, there's plenty of people that have complained about this for months. We should really look into this and see if we can make people happy and give them an incentive to subscribe".

The imagination spent on expanding my home street was completely wasted in my opinion. I would like the points back so I can spend them on something worthwhile instead. I do not care to have strangers wandering about on my home street. I find it creepy and invasive. If people want to opt in to having strangers on their home streets, that's fine. But players should have the option.
As for it being unfair to characterize the current system as allowing people to steal with no negative consquences, that's your opinion. It's also wrong. The truth hurts. People can steal from anyone's home street with no negative consequences. This is just how it is. I hate it. For the remaining lifetime of my herb plots, I will make sure that there's nothing growing there when I'm offline and when I'm online I will make sure that anyone on my home street is ejected as soon as I'm aware of their presence.
I think Tiny Speck would do better by its customers to offer privacy for a fee. I know that would be an incentive for me. I don't care for fashion or fancy wallpaper. What I do care for is having my property in Glitch be MY property.
