Twice as wide as a tree, but still "you need more yard space" for a Patch

I've expanded my home street a few times, hoping to plant a fourth tree, but I've gone beyond twice the width of the gas tree I hope to plant, and I'm still getting "You need more yard space" warnings.

Some of my guesses are:
* I am only allowed to have three Patches on my home street
* patches triple in size after I've placed three
* The "expand" only makes my street appear bigger; the game server still thinks it's 280 pixels shorter than it appears.
* I need a building permit from the bureacratic lizards to be allowed to add a fourth Patch on my home street.
* It's the Rook's fault; because it's always the Rook's fault.

Could someone tell me what I'm overlooking, or how I can find out more about why I am forbidden from adding a fourth Patch to my home street?

Here is a picture illustrating my dillema.

  • It's because the ground slopes at that point. I don't think you can put anything there (most street styles have that problem; it's kind of annoying).

  • I think you've hit the yard "bump" - you can't place anything on that slope-y area, so you'll have to keep expanding until you're past it.

  • I'd agree with justin. Try a different landscape

  • Changing the landscape won't help -- all of them have an un-cultivatable slope or drop-off in that place.  All you can do is keep expanding.

  • It's the slope there, it wouldn't let me do anything either :)

  • The slope is a good place to keep animals, if you want to limit your animals with a stick; it's not good for much else, unfortunately.

  • Interesting! I was wondering why it was taking me so many expansions to place a patch.

  • I found that sloped area quite annoying as well when I first started expanding and cultivating my street, but as stated, you'll find that large open area nice for keeping things/animals so that your street doesn't seem too overcrowded.  I keep my chickens there, since I like to keep their stick on a wider range and this way I can do that without them interfering with other resources (like getting in front of rocks while mining).

  • I used that area to put a rock for mining, also good for dirt piles. You can't put a patch (the tree might grow croooooked? :P) but it's not completely useless! :)

  • @ricepapergirl: I couldn't put a rock or dirt pile there.  I couldn't put anything in/on that slope

My chickens cluck up and down there and do just fine though

  • Also found out this problem the hard way by "expanding" multiple times and STILL not being able to place anything on the slope. Finally just gave up!

  • I can confirm: It's definitely because of the slope. Keep going left from there and you'll be all set. Or expand to the right and put them on other side.

  • They should introduce 'street debuffs' that discourage the sort of angst seen in this thread. Glitches shouldn't try to jam the absolute max amount of everything on their street. Perhaps a graduated reduction in the daily iMG reward if your street is overcrowded. The lag on a street crammed to the gills with 'stuff' is already a significant debuff, to be certain.

  • Tatsuo, most of the time it's not actually lag but a drain on your processor.

I don't know.  Even on my crummy little netbook, I prefer finished streets.  It's animals that are the worst culprit for me.  If I had my way, there'd be a limit of four pigs, two chickens and one butterfly.  But I'm sure that'd be absolutely no fun for a lot of people with faster machines.  It's tricky.
