Newbie Info

I don't know what information you give newbies now but could you include something about stuff in houses not just being up for grabs?

I befriended a newbie and invited her into my house to have a look around and I was horrified when she started harvesting all the stuff on the floor. I had to point out to her that it's not nice to take other peoples things and she was so embarrassed and started putting it back. I think she thought it had all just spawned there! I still had to replace my meat collector :(

It was a lesson learned, next time I'll have to clarify the point before letting anyone in.

But I'm British! We are known for not saying anything ..... the TV sketch where a couple indulge in noisy and uninhibited sex in a train carriage to the discomfort of the other passengers comes to mind, and no-one says anything until they light up - because of course it's a no-smoking carriage!  Maybe I need a sign - "this is a no-nicking house" ;)

  • Good point to make.  I would say this is a part of the more general problem of letting newbies in on our social norms, similar to previous discussions re:the more adult, not-kid-oriented nature of the game.  As much as I would hate to have to spell things out like this in the game, we do need to keep in mind the coming rush of newbies in the future and figure out how to deal with it (even if it means just keeping this in mind and telling them ourselves!).

Can anyone else think of similarly general "unsaid" things that they think should be conveyed to newbies?

  • I'm a newbie, and what I didn't see in the "tutorial" (yet) or would like to see in it, is some tips about leaving stuff alone.
Like the growing of trees, regenerating of things. I think I read something about it on the site (about harvesting trees when they're big), but ingame I didn't get a tip about it. If I hadn't read it in the blog I would have looted also small trees without any thought. Now I did as well, but was doubting wether I should leave it. When is a tree grown? What level is a tree? I did water and pet a lot of trees without harvesting, and was wondering if that did anything.

Also tips about random loot that lies on the floor in the world: Maybe someone left it there on purpose, or, like me, made a dish and had no room in the backpack. (If you see someone standing on/near an item that's on the floor it could have dropped out of their backpack that way - just ask if it's theirs or if it's ok if you take it. Don't just take it before the person has a chance to clean out a spot in the bag and take it.)

I've been playing for a few days only, and still getting tips from the helper, so maybe I will still receive that tip about letting stuff grow, but it would be better if it would be told very early on in the game.

  • Hi Miriamele, there is a group that you can join, that will answer most questions, called the FAQ Group,if you don't see the Q or A,just post one, anybody can join, and it's especially helpful for new people,if you can't find the group, look on my name, then look at the groups i'm in,hope this will help you.:)
About trees, you can pet, water, harvest any tree, obviously,if a tree is small, still growing,it will only give you the option to pet, water it.Planks respawn to pick up around the meadow, and in west spice, spices respawn to pick up.Oh and keys if you find them respawn also, that's all i can remember for now.
