Lock doorway gifts to house owner..Please?

We like to leave our friends and neighbours little gifts to come home to, its cute and fun... and well what isn't cute or fun is that people can just take from doorways, it's blatantly obvious that if something is placed outside a house door, then... it's a little gift for the owner of that house, why not just LEAVE it alone? So I am asking the devs please... is there anyway we can lock the little gifts to the owners of the house we leave them at? :) x

  • +1 I know I know we have the postal system but if you live in the same block it seems a little daft not to be able to leave at the doorstep.

  • Make it work like a one way house cupboard? Click and drag, then when owner goes in, they will find stuff at the entrance.

  • Agreed. I love leaving gifts on doorsteps, milk delivery runs to the entire street etc etc - but I think the items are frequently picked up by passers-by who don't realize that they've been left as gifts.

Given that there's code that understands about locking gnomes in front of doors, maybe gifts left on doorsteps could work a similar way. Maybe a doorstep donation could be set to only be touchable by the Glitch who left it or the property owner.

I wouldn't want to see a hidden cupboard though - I much prefer the enjoyment of the gift sitting out in the open.

  • Me too Snazzlefrazz  and I know we have the mail system..which is good...but leaving lil gifts on door steps is just so cute and fun I love doing it.. :-/ I was thinking same idea about the gnomes if they can be locked to owners doorsteps...then surely there is a way to make a code for doorstep gifts.

  • Or maybe like a letter slot on the houses, select a house that's not yours and have a "Mail" option pop up to drop something in the letter slot?

I'm a RL snail mail junkie, everything comes down to mail for me.

Ooh, what about a snail? Like the gnome, but to handle hand delivered mail.

  • If the devs like this, it could become a whole big thing....You could have quests to give presents, or deliver milk.  You could have a holiday devoted to gift giving, or something like Mayday.  Mayday would be cool, cause it'd be a whole 'nother reason to implement growing flowers which has been suggested elsewhere for a possible flower arranging skill.

  • If possible I would really enjoy this, I see people on my street often leave gifts for each other, and I like being able to leave stuff for others but I've been extremely wary of leaving stuff that isn't very small/for animals.

  • Azurite, that's such a gorgeous idea, I love it!

  • It would be a good idea to have gift giving quests ... Azurite   I like that...as long as the devs made it possible to "lock" the gifts we leave outside the home owners door.. :)

Lily Frog  Thing is we have a "mail" system, which works fine..But ...leaving gifts on doorsteps is just something a lil more personal and different than normal mail..It's nice to leave stuff..and its nice to come home and find a wee gift has been placed on your door step, but we need them locked so other players don't just "take" them,  :)

  • Agree.  It would be very cool to leave gifts securely at others' homes.

    How about a welcome mat?

When dropping an item(s) a notice comes up confirming you'd like to gift to the homeowner, and that once dropped you won't be able to reclaim.  If someone else tries to pick up the items, another notice comes up saying 'this doesn't belong to you."

ETA:  On the off chance others might bombard the homeowner, perhaps some kind of limit as to quantity/duration could be set in place.

  •  Christine..I like the matt idea.....sounds good to me :)

  • A big +1 to this idea. Another flaw with mail that nobody is mentioning is the fact that you have to have someone in your contact list before you can send them mail. Do you really want to add every single Glitch on your block, let alone in your quarter, to your contact list just to be able to give them all a gift? So this is a MUCH better method than using the mail system.

  • Yep Toksyuryel your right...it means we could leave gifts for our neighbours too if we wanted to without having to add every glitch to our friends list... the friends list gets so long ..it takes up a lot of space. :) Not to mention the fact that some of us ..move a lot, meaning we could if we wanted to...still leave our new neighbours little gifts too :)

  • I agree: stuff on the doorstep of a home should only be retrievable by the owner of the home.

  • awesome wonderful idea!

  • +1

However, players will have to be careful not to sort their inventories in front of other players' homes. Otherwise, I'm sure there will be a few 'I dropped my stack of Awesome Stews by mistake, and I can't pick them up!' complaints.

  • TK-855..Yes But I'm sure an option "do you really want to leave this item" of some sort can also be in place.. :) Or just a click/lock button.. to be sure.. x

  • @Cryztal: I tend to think in terms of other game projects.

Rather than make specific code, it'd be easier to set the space to have a property - anything dropped by the door becomes locked. If I have to code exceptions for dropping, I'm writing/expanding the drop command. (Which can become problematic, depending on how code is handled/commented.)

I still like the idea, however. (Mainly because a neighbor brought over freshly-baked cookies when I moved into my house IRL, and it was a nice touch.)

  • Yes please. All my housewarming gifts get stolen...

  • I love this idea, especially the welcome mat thing, and the holiday specific quests associated with it. But I'd love to give my neighbors gifts and simply being sure they are the ones receiving it.

  • Love this idea. Something similar was discussed elsewhere here, so there seems to be a little demand for it.

The other discussion focused on a personal mailslot for homeowners that did not require friending or finding a public mailbox if you are neighbors and just want to drop something off or leave something for people to take in pre-determined quantities (a basket for Hallowe'en candy, from which each visitor can take one or two, once).

The Welcome Mat dropzone also sounds good.

  • Thought some more...perhaps the "pick up" function could be toggled on and off by owners of apartments and houses? That way you could let new friends you don't know well yet into your place to wait for you, but they could not pick anything up if you toggled that function off (and "off" would be the default for everyone but the owner, who would have to choose to turn it on). You could still give items to people face to face or toggle "pick up" back on.

  • +1 with that. Either a one way drop box for gifts or lock gifts in front of a house to the house owner.
To make things easier (avoiding accidental drops in front of someone else's house), only the person that dropped the item and the house owner can pick it up. The gifter will not want to steal the gift, but could have made a mistake when dropping the item. So items dropped in front of a house are locked to the house owner and the dropper. To add a nice touch, there could be a way to tell who dropped/gifted the item (a "dropped by ..." tag).

  • truly some good ideas here...wish the devs would implement a 'sticky welcome mat'.
