I don't think vanity should be reset once your subscription ends.

Personally, I think vanity should be something that never resets. If a player is a subscriber at any given time, they should be able to modify and keep those vanity settings. However, I think once a subscription is up, players should no longer be able to change to a "subscriber only" setting, encouraging those that often change their looks to subscribe.

  • I'm of two minds... but mostly in favor of leaving the plan for subscriptions as-is. Currently, they discourage subscription-hopping... the fine art of joining for a limited time, accessing the features, then stopping the subscription.

I understand the emotional attachment to the look/appearance of your avatar as well, and think Tiny Speck has room to make some allowances (should they desire to). Allowing beta testers to keep subscription features as an exception, or through the ability to purchase them a-la-carte as a one-off also provides the added benefit of keeping the world more diverse at Go-Live.

If pushed to make a decision, the business side of me wins out for leaving things alone. Of course, it's not the first time the avatars have changed on some of the alpha players... we didn't always have these totally awesome faces and looks (love to kukubee).

  • Thinking out loud here:

If vanity item choices are all included in the subscription, I'd like to be able to keep whatever subscription vanity items I am using when my subscription ends.  If I change them to a free choice, I'd like them to still be a choice to switch back to.  So, as an enduring benefit of having once subscribed I can keep my last set-up available while still having flexibility with all the free choices.

If  I subscribe again, I can keep whatever subscription vanity items I am using when my subscription expires the second time.  I cannot also keep active previous subscriber vanity items.  So, there is no long-term benefit to subscribing and unsubscribing.  You always only get to keep active the subscriber vanity items that you were using at the end of your last subscription.

This is different from the buy-once, keep-forever clothing options.  If vanity items cost actual credits to obtain, then I'd like to see them treated the same way purchased-clothing is treated.

  • I think I see the 'subscription-free' items as having an ongoing rental fee for their use. Stoot has already said any items bought with currants during a subscription will be kept if the subscription stops - and free items obtained through a subscription will change to a free default after a grace period when a subscription stops. It makes perfect business sense, and the emotional argument can only really be made for beta testing - we've had access to things for a long period and have become attached. Hence the one-off purchase suggestion.

In the long view, the approach of subscribe-obtain-stop paying but keep the paid features-resubscribe when there is new cool-obtain-stop paying is exactly the sort of behavior (subscription hopping) the current system is designed to deter.
