Poll to possibly end the controversy about home streets.

Greetings fellow glitchen!

After numerous forum threads and conversations in Global Chat I have decided to create a poll so anyone can feel free to vote on how they feel about the current status of our home streets.

Ultimately I have complete faith that the team at Tiny Speck will make the best decision for us all regarding this issue.

Happy voting!!

  • I apologize for the snarky tone of my last post. I'm glad TomC's more lengthly post was helpful.

I appreciate the desire to understand, but there are some things that cannot be explained in a simple way. To understand why something is or is not difficult to accomplish in a software application often requires an in-depth understanding of the software internals. The external mechanics that you see don't tell you much about what is happening inside the software.

The software for Glitch is proprietary, so TS is not going to provide a detailed explanation of how that software works in a public forum.

  • TomC has some good points about why it's hard [edit: Splendora too, while I was writing this], but the complete explanation would take most of today and into tomorrow (how do you tell which ones are locked? what about stuff that other people drop on the street? can they not drop things at all? what if we wanted to support the oft-requested feature of picnic baskets where you each passer-by can only take *some*? when do we broadcast lock/unlock state if it changes while another player is already on the street? if we miss a message and clients get out of sync, what kind of error messaging will we need to support? how prepared are we do deal with complaints from people who thought they locked something but didn't really?)

It was already a bit of a nightmare to do it with shelving (we are still working through bugs on that) and at least there we had house interior permissions and the visual distinction of shelving to rely on. While I could be lying about how complicated it is because, out of pure spite, I really want to prevent people from having a simple easy feature that everyone wants … but surely it seems more likely that I'm telling the truth and happen to think other upcoming features will obviate the need for this and our development time is better spent on moving everything else forward?

  • Folks, if we were allowed to make certain items lock, that would ruin the point of the house. Cause that's what the house was meant for.

THIS.  What is WITH people wanting to stack all their crap out in the street?   "wanting to help my fellow glitchen" is a piss-poor reason that lacks believeability.  Take it from me - your fellow glitchen want you to clean your yard and mow your lawn, not fill it with pigs and machinery and random objects.

  • Stoot, I appreciate your last response greatly. Thank you for editing your first response, and then posting this one. *hugs*

And to WalruZ, to be totally honest.........I had pigs on my street because I am on the spice route.  I truly had them to there to help others, not myself. (I have plenty of pigs in my two yards!!)  When I noticed the pigs were starving to death because 1. they wouldnt eat from the trees on their own, 2. they wouldnt eat from those trees unless they were being watered/pet, I put out a feeder to keep them alive.

The feeders were constantly lifted. I quietly put more out. Then the pigs were taken. Then the trees were killed and holes dug in the patches.

So yes, mine started as trying to be genuinely nice. And anyone that knows me knows that is my nature. I go out of my way to help others, leave things for them to use, etc.

Where as you might not be like that, I think that I'm not alone in really just wanting to help others.

  • @stoot - thanks for the additional explanation.  I really wasn't looking for the 2 day explanation, just the Cliff's notes version.

Since I'm not sure if you're "while I could be lying..." was meant to be humorous or if you just want people to think you're an ass, or if you were serious, I'll answer it:  I never meant to imply that you were lying.  I really just wanted to understand - even on a basic level - why something that seemed simple was complicated.  I apologize if it came across as denigrating.

  • I appreciate the extra clarity on the complications involved. As an (ex-) coder myself I should have refrained from making such a dopey comment. It's ALWAYS more complicated than it seems.

And as a UI person (more recently!), I oughta know better about that too.

  • Obviously all they have to do is make a nice little padlock UI, and slap it above everything outside your house.
Because that's coding in a nutshell.

  • @ Shallawalla....Stoot's "While I could be lying about how complicated it is because, out of pure spite, I really want to prevent people from having a simple easy feature that everyone wants", statement is only to say...Why would he want to keep the 'lockable' code out of the game if it were so damn easy,.. (my assessment).

What is with people not realizing that people have different motivations, goals and desires?

Sure, some Glitchen may prefer people to not put stuff in their streets. Some like seeing what others put in their streets. Some Glitchen don't give a crap one way or another.

Ultimately it comes down to what people want to do with their street, and right now, if they choose to put stuff out there, they need to be willing to take the risk of the things they don't want taken being taken. There is nothing wrong with that, nor is there anything wrong with them making suggestions about what they'd like to see in relation to it.

  • Seriously. I really don't get it.

I have a house IRL. This house has a porch. On this porch I placed a huge bowl of of candy for the trick or treaters to take some from. After the first 2 groups of kids left, I went to go check on the bowl and found it empty.

A few years ago my aunt lived in an apartment on the 2nd or 3rd level. My cousin kept his bike on the balcony. He never chained it or anything....since it wasn't on the ground level.  He wanted to go ride it one day and found it stolen.

Now, both of these places were my spaces: Ralis' porch and Ralis' Auntie's balcony. In my case I put something I wanted to share with my neighbors out and in my cousin's he put something person. Both cases ended with people taking advantage and helping themselves.

Moral of this story. Don't put stuff outside that you don't want taken. As in  RL people will take it.

  • Because of our nature, we don't realize how damn hot the oven is until we touch it.

  • Volcov and Ralis.  I do not find your observations to be incompatible with Little Miss Giggle's point in the slightest.

In fact, you're just repeating her last statement, and I think she put it in a slightly less adversarial way.

Yes, and I'm in the first group.  I was just expressing my heartfelt opinion.  I *do* love all my fellow glitchen and accept their goals and desires, mostly.  I would never want Innie's feeders or harvesters to get taken.

  • To your point, Walruz, a massive amount of stuff on the screen does bog down some people's computers, or even crash them.

My own house takes 30 seconds to finish loading the furniture, let alone the stuff.  And, due to Flash's memory leaks, when I walk through an overly full street, my game becomes sluggish and chunky from there on until I reboot the browser.  So keeping things at least a little tidy can be considered a courtesy to others.

  • @ Carl Projectorinski
And she's repeated the same thing others have said.

  • I don't see my post as being adversarial at all. I just provided real life examples. If I'm repeating what she said (I don't remember, actually, since i read this thread in one go.) thenI agree with what she said and added my opinion, is that the wrong thing to do?

Honestly, I don't care either way. So, I'll just tap out of this subject and go back to lurking.

  • Shallawalla — it was meant to be humorous (you have to imagine heavy emphasis on the "could" in "could be lying" along with exaggeratedly-arched eyebrows) :)

By this time next week I think enough will have changed that at least some of you who want locking are going to want something a different instead.

  • I'm going to imagine that we'll be able to turn the front of our houses into automats - a wall of little doors where you can put anything you have and associate a price with it.  You can go 'shopping' by visiting your friends, and with a lack of global item prices in the automat market, you'll never know when you might visit someone's house and see a great deal behind one of the doors.

Ralis and Volkov, my apologies.  Tempers are high and patience short, and apparently as much as I try to reign in my own feelings, I guess I'm no exception. ;)

  • Oh my. I don't think I explained clearly at all my motives for creating this poll and the purpose of it. I feel that I should clarify.

Firstly I would like to whole heartedly apologise to Stoot and the rest of the team for actually perpetuating the exact problem that this poll was aimed at helping to solve. I didn't realise (perhaps naively) that so many people would post comments on this thread. It was my intention simply to allow people to express their opinions in the poll so as to stop the constant venting of opinions in Global Chat and the creation of forum threads on the subject. It was becoming intensely emotional for a lot of players and was impossible to ignore for the players that didn't have strong opinions about it.

I will state that it was never my intention for TS to actually take any notice of the poll at all. As I said, I trust that they have already considered the matter and are busy working on the new updates which will almost certainly address a lot of issues, or make those issues irrelevant. The poll was simply to give people a place to lay to rest their opinion, so that they could move on and enjoy the rest of the game and look forward to the updates.

My intention was NOT to further debate and discussion on the subject, as I feel that at this time any more debate and discussion (which frequently is emotionally charged and causing conflict amongst players) is actually counter-productive. The team at TS are busy trying to implement the new changes and I would imagine are not at this point about to stop what they are doing to fix perceived problems that aren't going to be relevant when the new release happens.

I deeply regret setting up this forum post now. It appears I've just made things worse. I'm so sorry everyone :(
