Do you treat your butler's reports of visitors as complete and reliable?

Do you treat your butler's reports of visitors as complete and reliable?  If so, you might want to re-think that. Here's a case in point:

Today I saved my logs covering a period of about six hours and spanning three game days.  During that time, while I was in-game, my butler informed me via IM of 8 people visiting my street. At the end of that period, I used the "Who visited?" feature to get a list of visitors.  The list I got from my butler in this manner included only 6 of the 8 people the butler had told me about via IM.  There was nothing special I could see about the two players who were not included in the list. In particular, they were neither the first nor the last visitors during the six-hour period in question.

Based on this and other observations I've made about my butler's reports of visitors, I conclude:

1. Butlers try to remember and report everyone who has visited since the the past time they were asked "Who visited?"

2. In spite of their best efforts, butlers sometimes leave people out of the list.

3. Butlers are particularly likely to leave some people out if there were a lot of visitors.

4. However, butlers also can leave people out even if there were not many visitors.

5. People can be left out of the "Who visited?" list even if they visited recently.

6. People can be included in the list even if multiple game days have passed since their visit.

  • No, I know it's not complete. The butler says things like "there might be more but I can't remember" so I assumed it was just a sampling.

It would be nice to have a complete list, only because I like to return the favor and the iMG to the visitors.

  • That's really interesting.   I have read a few posts where people have blocked others after their garden has been trashed and it's worth bearing in mind that the list is not always accurate or up to date.

  • I know it's not complete, but it's not really a big deal to me- I don't really get all bound up about what people do on my street (my gardens are in the backyard, and there's nothing left around to pick up that I don't want people to take), so whoever shows up shows up. It'd be nice to know, but it's not really that important.

  • I find the butler to be completely untrustworthy the past couple days. My daughter has had visitors...shown by img. gained and trashed gardens and I've visited and everytime she checks butler says No Visitors. For myself, friends have visited and dropped off things but no record of them having been there.

  • i don;t believe it's accurate.

    i also don;t care.

  • Yeah, I've had visitors reported by IM who haven't been in Brabinger's guest book. I'm only bothered because I like to return visits as much as possible.

  • I"m with Alaina, same issues. Sometimes my butler doesn't remember anyone coming by, even though more than one person has left packages with him. I"ve also gotten really high iMG from my rock on days when butler thinks no one has visited.

  • My butler definitely has amnesiac tendencies. I don't see WHY this is the case, it seems like something that ought to be completely reliable.

  • I've had imagination gains when there supposedly had not been any visitors for the day they came from and the one beforehand, and even a package through a visitor that was not reported. So, I wonder a bit at the people claiming that they can find out who exactly did what on their street and ban them just by checking the reports.

  • I posted about this in General to provide an advisory and also because I thought it might be interesting for people to discuss whether/how they use the visitor information provided by their butler.

I use visitor information in several ways:

    1.  I have a cook's store in my tower. My goal for this store is to provide a comprehensive offering of items a cook might need, with prices set just high enough to let me keep things in stock most of the time (i.e. I charge more than I'd prefer for many items to avoid having a store filled with empty SDBs). If I'm doing it right, I'll get repeat customers.

    2. I'm curator of the Community Kitchen network and housing route. Knowing how many visitors come through my street and knowing who the visitors are lets me check to see whether the route is serving new players as hoped.

    3. Having the butler keep track of visitors provides a convenient way for people to drop off donations to the Community Kitchen Food Bank.  This is the case for which I'd most like accurate information. Yesterday my butler informed me "Oh, I have 80 Rice, but I don't remember who gave it to me" and "Oh, I have 7 Abbasid Ribs, but I don't remember who gave it to me."

For cases 1 & 2 described above, I can live with incomplete information. In fact, I rather like having a bit of ambiguity about who exactly visits my street. However, in cases like 3 above, ambiguity is not so good.

  • Are you calling Sloppy Joe a liar?  Is that what you're doing here?  Let me tell YOU somethin'; we go way back.  Sloppy's been my guy since before I even imagined him!  I don't know who you think you are, but, to question a helluva guy like Sloppy?  Take a look in the mirror my friend.  Ask yourself, "Am I perfect?"

Lucky for you, Sloppy can't read and is forgiving.  Ima let him know about you, but, like he always said, "Forgive...and forget."  Or maybe it was "Forgive and f*&# it".  Come to think of it, I think it was just "Fuhget about it!"  I don't know.  Either way, he'll probably still give you a gift.

  • @Splendora- Thanks for posting. Especially for people who trust the butler. As in "the yard is a mess and only 1 person was there...." BLOCK!

Hopefully, there will be a few unblocks and 2nd chances quietly happening

  • Not only does my butler say I have no visitors when I know I have, it also doesn't give me messages.  People have asked if I have received messages left with him/her/it and I have none.  :|

  • We decided to live without the worries of glitchy comings and goings and what they may do on our home street.
We have adopted a 'forgive and forget' lifestyle.
    Grumpkin does it well.

  • I actually don't like the logging so I never use it. It feels "Big Brother-ish" to me and each time I get a message about someone entering my street, I feel like "what do you want me to do about it; kick 'em out?"

This direction of people feeling like they have to have iron control over their home street is unfortunate. I don't think Glitch should be that sort of game, and if someone is inflexible about who appears on their street and what they do, they shouldn't put anything they care about out.

  • If you felt like it, you could tell your butler to say hi to whoever it is, from the announcement I think that's what the butler would like you to about it.  :) And some folks use the logs to do return visits.

    Otherwise I'm with you, Janitch.

  • Usually my butler is better but considering 24 people bought furniture from my tower (as recorded on the money bags) this morning and my butler recorded 3 visitors I would say a resounding no, he is not reliable.

Usually he lists 15 or so before saying he can't remember any more people.

  • I like the logging because I like to return visits. It's also nice, since I have a little museum, to be able to track down someone if (troublesome) things get taken despite my signage. I don't block them though. The only way I'd block someone for taking all the things on my street is if they did it over and over and over. Saying "don't put things out" is just depressing - it means I live in a game world where I have to be more cautious of my house's yard than at my real life house.

This direction of people feeling like they have to have iron control over their home street is unfortunate.

I've said, "keep it in your backyard", but I have recently spoken to people who have problems and I understand where they're coming from too.  At least one is a low-profile antisocial player who has a few 'friends' but reasonably assumes they are unlinked-to via signposts.  Yet, when they placed lots of herb plots in their street, suddenly people seemed to "find" the street and visit it often.  They certainly weren't visiting to wish a happy good morning or pass the time of day, and they didn't stumble in by accident - it's all about finding mature herbs and cleaning them out, perhaps with a replanting if they're so inclined.   Public or not, these people are leeches.  Screw 'em and the pig they rode in on.

  • lol it's not big brotherish to expect to get your messages. I don't give a darn who visits really it's just disappointing to miss messages, people might think I'm ignoring them! :o

  • Yep, money bags revealed my butler's amnesia, too. But as long as I get img for the visits I don't care. No recorded visitors and 1000 img- must have been the imagination fairy :-)

I'll file a bug report the next time though.
