New Feature: Glitch Snaps

Got Eyeballery? Snapshotting? A Camera from the toy vendor? Well, well, well… look at you: making .png files and downloading them to your hard drive. Like a sucker.

Well, no more!!! NO! No more. Friends, now when you make that snap, you can save it right here on Glitch. You can still download the image and post it wherever you want, but we'll save multiple sizes of your snapshot right here, just for you. And you can add captions. And you can post the photo as a status update. And people can make comments. And if you think that's all … well, we know you're not silly enough to think we'd stop there.

We're also storing tags for each person in the image, we're "geotagging" the snaps themselves and we're even recording what animals and other non-player characters appear in frame. In the next release of Glitch Snaps, it'll be easy to do really important things … like find all photos which include a particular chicken taken in Smallend High in Groddle Heights on a particular day. You'll wonder how you lived without it.

Anyway, enough of the future. Here are some notes on how things will work in this first release:

1. You still need the Snapshotting skill and a Camera item to take the snap (once we do the transition to Imagination, that is liable to change). Press "C" to enter Camera mode. Pressing the Enter key while in Camera mode will show you a preview of the snap. From there you can choose to save it, add a caption, post a status update, etc.

2. Only you can see your archive of snaps you have taken (there is no public gallery) and the web addresses (URLs) of the snaps are secret (that means they are effectively private — the addresses are pretty hard to guess).

3. Therefore, if you want others to see your Snap, you'll have to post a status update or send them a link. (Later, we'll add the concept of "publishing" a snap so it will automatically show up in your updates, be included in your public gallery and be available for searching.)

4. To make sharing easier, we included a short URLs service (on the new lem.to domain). We'll show you the short URL on that page for cutting and pasting. Twitter and FB sharing buttons are coming soon.

And, that's it for now. Enjoy!

  • Lettuce, being a decent experimental baker, I will concoct something that fits that bill.  It will have to qualify as fan art, of course, but it should be tasty!

  • Awesome! Glad to hear you guys are aware and are working on this issue, but I still want to be able to delete/edit my typo-containing comments from the Glitchr pages ;D

  • This is neat :) I can't use it because I didn't want the two extra skills, but I look forward to perhaps using it in the future ;)

I have to wonder, however, does this release of Glitch Snaps mean that another big release we're all waiting for is farther off than we predicted? I've never seen big updates roll out so close together, so should we expect R2 perhaps next week instead? Or should we be more hopeful than that?

  • but...but.... the camera mode doesn't allow smiley face, grrr face, or JUMP JUMP JUMP!

  • What Liza said R2 ? :)
Posted 8 months ago by 2020smoke Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Deadshot: comments will certainly be deletable and almost certainly editable reasonably soon. That functionality didn't quite make the cut for this first release (mainly due to the slight added complexity of syncing up comment changes with the way comments are displayed in your activity feed).

    But... soon!

  • Pretty neat stuff
Not as fast as the snapshotr in glitch companion, but not bad still /jk
One thing you could do, now it's all hosted on the servers, is a few slots to feature our fave snapshots on our profile page?

  • It looks like a change was made just recently in hiding the Location info for where the photo was taken, would this apply to the old housing locations, too? Hoping those names can still be shown when the old style houses are gone.

    ====

For the view count, would it be possible to limit the count from increasing if they are rapid refreshes from the same person? Otherwise, it seems too easy for someone to inflate the total views.
Posted 8 months ago by TomC Subscriber! | Permalink
  • TomC: there was a bug during release that meant the first snapshots taken didn't record their location properly. Everything else should, although we'll need to have a think about locations which are going to disappear (as of right now, they will cease to show on the photo if they're no longer in existence).

I'll have a think about the view-count thing, but it may not happen for a while. It's not like there's an achievement for getting 100 views of a snapshot ;)

  • Thank you for the clarifications, hitherto; there are a few places where the camera is not usable like races, Game of Crowns, Kristel Kaos, The Drop, Hell One etc; would this limitation have any chance of being lifted for just the ability to snapshot? (perhaps lock the camera movement to where the player is standing if the eyeballery scanning advantage is the reason why it's disabled in some of those places).

  • Oh, cool.

Instagram/Hipstamatic filtery type things would be awesome for those with artfag sensibilities.

I vote for tilt-shift, HDR and an Add Kittens filter

And some sort of vomiting panda

  • Agree with Lx ("One thing I miss about the old snapshotting, though, was how quick it was: C, Enter, Enter, done. With the new snapshotting, there is a delay after taking the photo (as the preview fades and rotates into view), and another delay when saving.... It would be great if the preview animation could be shortened and the saving/uploading done in the background so that I could return to the game more quickly").

Also: The rotation effect makes me kinda' dizzy.

  • glum pudding: the multiple popup issue and delete photo weirdness you brought to our attention (http://www.glitch.com/forum/general/18844/#reply-195465) is now fixed! Thanks for taking the time to let us know.

  • TomC (and others): the camera should be usable almost everywhere now. We'll sort that out over time.

shhexy corin: that actually seems kinda likely :)

  • Cool beans! I have the same issue as Saywhat mentioned. The camera undoes my facial expressions, so I can't make faces for snaps. I couldn't use it for my Glitch camouflage pic because I couldn't keep my afk face. I would like to put my best face forward for the camera.

  • Two things.

Thing one. I think it is now scientifically proven I cannot love TS any more than I do at this moment.

Thing two. Instead of Professor Corin*'s idea of Add Kittens I think it should be Add Alpacas. Maybe not as obviously cute, c'mon. ALPACAS.

    * Because she's so s-m-r-t

  • Will we ever see a Glitch Photo Album we could keep in our houses and only friends can see? A kind of private gallery.
Posted 8 months ago by Hexamony Subscriber! | Permalink
  • *clears throught*
    Ok.
Will there be an update to the glitch HQ app to allow for these?
Also, is there REALLY 'not' an achievement for getting 100 views?
Can you make it so we can upload already taken photos to our 'gallery'
    One more thing........……………

    THANKS FOR ALL OF THIS!!

  • Awesome sauce! When will Glitch HQ be updated to support snapshot viewing & commenting?

(It seems to have broken the app's activity feed and profile page... i.imgur.com/jhaOw.png, neither will scroll down)
Posted 8 months ago by Hburger Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The Android version of Glitch HQ seems to be broken in the same way as shown in the above iOS screenshot.

Also, I'm not sure if the snaps update is affecting this, but the app seems to force-close more frequently now.

  • One thing I did enjoy about the original Snap was the fastness.  I could take multiple shots rapidly and save to my Glitch Folder on my computer.  I can still save them but it is no longer Fast :(

I am used to taking multiple shots at parties and other events.  The action does not wait for me and now I fear I will miss a number of fun shots while processing the new "film".  The only improvement I can think for this would be the ability to override the preview function and continue to Snap away.
Posted 8 months ago by Brib Annie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Agree Brib. I liked the speed before the change.
Perhaps an on/off button. Off button would put it on your computer allowing speed snapping. On button would put it in snap album.

  • Varaeth , Hburger & jjbob: HQ update is in the works!

Hexamony & Merrylegs: real photoalbum/photo storybook game items are part of the motivation for the Snaps feature in the first place. That and being able to hang them on the wall as art …

  • It looks great.

I hope that at some point there will be a way to upload all my old screenshots and snaps. I used to do them often but didn't really have a good way of sharing them. I tried one of the offsite places that people use but I promptly forgot the password and couldn't be bothered with trying to get it back.

With so many changes in the works, the old screenshots are interesting and worth looking at in the future.

  • I haven't been keeping up with this thread much, but are the snapshot comments going to get their own tab on the home page like Updates and Requests do? I think that would be very nice.
