Damn, I just got owned. Hard.

Edit: Many thanks to all of the Glitchen who were generous enough to send me an emblem. It's thanks to your generosity that I now have another icon of Pot. You guys are awesome. ^_^

I always thought the worst thing that could happen would be that I would accidentally donate a nice item to a shrine, but it turns out that wasn't the half of it.

I just accidentally gave my Icon of Pot to somebody.

I go to check and see if I'd used all of that icon's functions, since it's hard to keep track with all 11 of them in my inventory. Yup. So I press enter twice to mine the rock I'm standing next to. Only I forgot to click to close the context menu, and the option that was highlighted just happened to be "give". So by pressing enter twice, I gave it to somebody. If that wasn't bad enough, the person I gave it to wasn't like most of this community: as soon as he realized what happened, he logged off immediately, and my icon was gone. He was level 3, but he was likely somebody's alt character, because if he was actually a new player, he probably wouldn't have reacted by immediately logging off.

Well, I hope that guy gets good use out of the icon that I lost because of my spectacular bad luck. And I hope that, at some point, the devs give us some kind of protection against accidentally feeding animals, donating to shrines, and giving people items, as seems to happen so often to people with this game's "spam enter"-based gameplay. Giving and donating things doesn't happen so often, I know, but I hear people complaining how they accidentally fed animals an entire stack of items all the time.

It's going to be a pain working up another 11 emblems with the already inflated max favor I have now. Even when the hole in my collection of icons is finally patched, I'm sure I'll always remember this day.

  • :c That is just so sad. I would give you one of my Pot emblems if I were not collecting them for my own Icon of Pot. I wish you luck in recollecting, I really wish I could help out in some way. Maybe one of the other giant's emblems, and you could try and trade it for a Pot?
Posted 14 months ago by Ristretto Subscriber! | Permalink
  • i would ask the devs to give you another... they did when i lost my senior funpickle!!
Posted 14 months ago by GiaTori Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Ristretto: That'll probably be what I do: get emblems from the giants that require less favor than others and trade those for Pot emblems. I'm probably not going to attempt to rebuild the icon for a while, since I'm devoting all my favor toward lowering the skill time on some long skills. I appreciate the offer though. :)

@GiaToria: I would consider doing that, except for a few things. For one, it's totally my fault that this happened. I slipped and forgot to close the context menu. Two, the icon wasn't destroyed, somebody else just has it. Maybe if the icon was destroyed somehow. Three, I can always create another icon. The funpickle was a beta gift, something where there's a limited amount in the world and no more can be created.

It just doesn't seem right for them to restore an item in this case.

  • At least you're keeping a cool head about this, and no problem, mistakes happen. I have done some abysmally stupid things in my time. I know how you feel. :c

  • :(  mr glenn.

do you remember the person's name? maybe i am just naive, but can you message them and ask for it back? maybe it was just a coincidence they logged off at that moment -- phone call or the UPS man at the door or something? hopefully as soon as they realize what happened they will give it back?
Posted 14 months ago by mileena Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yeah, I wrote down the person's name to IM him if he ever gets on. It's not impossible that it was a coincidental log-off, but the circumstances make it seem unlikely. He hasn't been on since that time, but I'm checking back occasionally.

  • Mr. Glenn I will give you a Pot emblem.  I am not in a rush to get the icons :)  I can't get on the game right now but look me up in say 4 hours? ok?

  • You guys seriously don't have to do that. I didn't make the topic to try and get people to send me free emblems, but to warn other people to be careful. I'd never even considered this a potential risk until it happened.

Still, I already had one person, Fresca, send me an emblem, and he/she insisted on not taking anything in return. It's been a long, long time since I've been part of such a generous community, so I'm not used to having people give me things. Usually I'm the one giving out stuff or hiding goodies behind foreground objects. :P

  • i did the same earlier to someone when I meant to give candy, but luckily it was a 'proper' (read: decent) glitch player who laughed and gave it back when i apologised...

  • Mr Glen I am so far away from even starting a pot icon...infact I am not even 1/2 way through my zille or lem both of which emblems I have amassed by mistake by misjudging my donations but your point about not feeding animals more than and I don't know how many times I have been squishing chickens and lost my 12 sided dice to the shrine close by - it would be kinda cool to have a 'are u sure?' button when things are done by mistake.  I am glad everyone is being so supportive and if I can offer anything it would be some shrine powder if that would help.  I will send a fr to you.

  • I don't want to sound harsh, but you shouldn't be running around with an icon in your inventory.   It belongs safe at home.

  • Sometimes I don't notice that someone had given me something until I happen to glance at the [Local Chat/Activity] pane, especially if I just plan on reaching the nearest street sign.

  • They were at home at first, but they're much more useful being carried about in my inventory, even if they can't bestow their walk-in-front bonus. Even though my homes are as close to the mines as possible, I'm not going to go home every time I'm at low energy or mood to use them, and it's really hard to ignore their power. Last time I use my Mab icon, I received 800 energy (avg is probably closer to 300). Carrying these around means I rarely need to use food for energy, and never need to use anything but the icons for mood.

Really, if they didn't want us being able to use them while being carried, the 3 R's wouldn't show up unless it's placed on the ground. That would make it too risky to use in public.

@MelodiousViv Yeah, I've learned to be very careful about squeezing chickens with any shrines nearby. ._.
Your generosity is much appreciated. :)

  • Mr. Glenn, another alternative for contacting the person is to use the search function to find their user profile.  Make them a buddy.  Use the ingame mail system to send them a message that will be in their mailbox whether or not you are on at the same time they are.
Posted 14 months ago by WindBorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yeah, I was using his profile to keep track of him up until now. He's actually in game now and I've IM'ed him. He hasn't responded yet.

Edit: Well, either he hasn't noticed the IM or he's ignoring me. He's not AFK, since I see he's changing areas on his profile and he's received achievements since I messaged him. Well, I'll send him mail and hope for the best.

I'll have to take a look at the mailbox to see if I can actually send message. I've assumed that it involves sending an actual note by mail, which would require Penmanship to write the note, but that might not be the case.

Edit: Huh, looks like it doesn't require Penmanship.

  • nope you can just mail them. i'm sorry you lost your icon!  that's beyond frustrating.   i hope the other person turns out to be a typical Glitch, and plays nice with you.

i have a Pot emblem I can send you. :)

  • What an awesome community- so many Glitches offering to give. ;) . thanks for the warning Mr .Glenn . ;)

  • I wonder if the person you accidentally gifted is the same jerk who not only wouldn't return the Walloping Diamond I accidentally gave him (we were in front of a shrine, and I was trying to donate it) and then not only wouldn't give it back, but wouldn't even talk to me.

    He just stood there.

Eventually I gave him a flummery, told him I hoped he enjoyed playing the game, and left. Never a word from this glitch. Secretly, I hope karma gets 'em good.

  • One thing to consider if he is a newbie, he may not have worked out how to communicate yet. I know my friend was lvl 8 when I finally caught up with him in game and I had to teach him how to chat in local and in IM.

  • this reminds me of when I have spent my entire stash of currants at the vendor   by mistake... Live and learn. The game is to teach you to be careful.  It is lovely that people are so generous.
Don't dwell on regrets.. Get busy and replace the lost item.

  • I hate when folks say " I wish the devs would make it so I dont make silly mistakes" I know that it sucks that you lost the item but it was by human error...There isnt a lot that coding can do to prevent human error!

But I do know it sucks to make mistakes like that!! Here's hoping that you earn your new emblem quickly!!!

    XOXOX

  • Just sent you one Mr. Glenn.  Hopefully you'll receive enough to get another icon. If the other player knew what it was and kept it intentionally I'm sure karma will take care of it. Carry on and have fun!! :D

  • @Mimiberry - I hate when people say "I told you so".  Great.  Want a cookie?

  • Well, I'd just maxed out my learning for my current skill, so I donated enough for a Pot emblem. I decided I'd better check my mail to see how many you guys had sent me before I donated for another one the next day. Ten. Ten people each sent me an Emblem of Pot. Wow! I now have 11 emblems, enough to create another Icon of Pot, and it's thanks to you guys.

Truly, this community must be unique in the MMO world. I'll be keeping my eyes open, but let me know if there's anything I can do for you guys. I'd love to give back for this awesome help you've given me.

@MiMiBerry: I would usually agree, but this is not one of those times. I think there's a lot coding can do to prevent this particular issue. In this game which emphasizes pressing the enter key many times as the way to interact with most objects, having the defaults on things set to "yes, yes, maximum items" is a booby trap waiting to happen. I know it's not just me doing this. Just a bit earlier, somebody said in Global "Aw crap... that's what I accidentally donated earlier. My cocktail shaker".

There would be three different prompts that I would choose for the devs to make "Cancel" the default selection: i42.tinypic.com/bir69.png, i39.tinypic.com/4uez9f.png, and i43.tinypic.com/bi0acg.png.

That should create the minimum inconvenience (because those menus aren't particularly keyboard-friendly anyway), while stopping the majority of these occurrences from happening. In the meantime, as you can see in the pictures, I always keep a single unit of allspice on me in case I'm interacting with animals or squeezing chickens near a shrine and something goes awry.
Posted 14 months ago by Mr. Glenn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Also, why is the default action on some items "give" while on others it is "use"?  That's my biggest complaint.

  • There were at least two situations while mining when I ended up with an extra pick somehow.  In both cases I didn't notice it until later.   I do have a vague recollection of another player saying something like "my pick"  earlier but that was about it.  I suppose I was hitting enter/enter while watching TV or something, and the other player was clicking on her/his pick and must have accidentally hit "give" instead of  "use".     The mining activity is rather "boring" (by which I mean not very mentally engaging) and the notices windows appear and disappear quickly.  I imagine the mining activity would be even more boring/frustrating if you had to force yourself to play close attention to every action.

  • Mr. Glenn I'm sorry you lost your icon but very glad you got enough to create another.  Since you know the name of the glitch I would report it.  The other day i was mining, my bags were full and a sapphire popped out.  Before i could eat or drop something another glitch swooped in, grabbed the sapphire and swooped off.  I reported it.  TS replaced the sapphire and said they would talk with the player.  If he IS a level 3 and doesn't know better staff can enlighten him.  If it IS an alt staff should know this so that he knows that behavior is not acceptable.

  • That thing with the gem has happened to me a few times.   I never thought to report it.  Figured that it was fair but not very nice.   The last time it happened I finished mining the rock and then walked up to where the person had  gone to mine and stood there glaring at him (insofar as a glitch can glare) for a few moments without speaaking.  Must have made him uncomfortable because he gave me a key to kristol kaos.  I accepted it and left.

Decent people will usually just tell you you dropped something instead of snatching it up.

Anyway, now I wont waste energy mining a rock unless I have two empty slots - preferably 3 in case the rock slot fills up.
