Toolboxes

As a new player to the game I recently bought a toolbox, without quite knowing what made it different from a bigger bag. I assumed it would be a slightly larger storage piece, but just for tools. I was right about the just for tools part...

After debating in global a bit about toolboxes vs. bigger bags it does seem that they have some benefits, but they hardly seem worth the cost to a lowbie. Further I'm sure that other new players will likely purchase it assuming it must be bigger because of it's higher cost and be disappointed as well.

So I started thinking of how toolboxes could be made better. I assumed that increasing the size was not something the devs wanted (though it would be cool!) so I tried to come up with something else.

Here's my idea: What if toolboxes allowed the use of every tool inside without opening them? Instead of opening when clicked, they'd produce a large drop-down menu with the abilities of every tool inside. In essence they'd be fully customizable 16-function swiss army toolboxes.

When a tool breaks (i.e. your frypan broke) you'd replace it's use menu with a repair menu item (i.e. repair frypan.  Or , potentially way more awesome, every tool inside could share durability. So instead of individual tools breaking the toolbox would break. The toolboxes durability would be the combined durability of all the items inside.

As far as tool organization goes, it would still be possible to open toolboxes to remove and add specific tools (it'd be the last option on the drop menu) it's just wouldn't open by default when clicked.

  • I would like newly bought tools to automatically be sorted into the toolbox, rather than being added to the first free space. I bought a toolbox after some folks in global chat said this was how toolboxes worked, but mine has never functioned that way.

Also, what if we had more color choices for bags or a way to upgrade a bag to a toolbox rather that buying a new toolbox? I like how we can label the bags, and a red bag labeled "toolbox" would have been more useful to me than paying extra for an icon.

  • I was just thinking this...

Spices go into your spice rack, elements go into your elemental pouch, compounds go into the Alchemistry kit...

Doesn't quite make sense that tools don't go into the toolbox

  • The toolbox needs to do one of two things:

    a) Be a whole lot bigger than a big bag
    or
    b) There should be specific toolboxes for different kinds of tools. This would be similar to what shexycorin says in that tools go in the toolbox (like spices) but because there are so many tools there could be different kinds of boxes.

So a 'Gardening Tools' box would have just enough space to accommodate the tools you need for gardening. 'Chefs Kit' would hold the tools for cooking, etc.

  • What benefit does a toolbox actually have?

  • Echoing sel. What's the point of a toolbox? They cost more than Bigger Bags and have more limitations...

  • No benefit other than knowing just from quickly looking, where SOME of your tools are.
Some tools can not even be put into the toolbox.

IMO, the whole Inventory system needs reworking badly. Even with Bigger Bags, it's such a nuisance to actually find what you need quickly/easily (for me anyway).

I had a toolbox during Beta, but I won't buy one again. Bigger bag named "Tools" holds EVERY tool I put in it. (I got a grey one to make it colour coded for this too.)

  • Making multiple types of toolboxes sounds like a bad idea.

The bigger bags seem way better (even price wise, why are toolboxes that have less functionality more expensive than a bigger bag?) than toolboxes.

    Proposed changes:
1)Let a toolbox be open the same time as any bag (Showing underneath instead of overtop your Inventory)
    OR
2)Realist's idea of simply using the one click on the toolbox
    OR
3)Make them much cheaper than bigger boxes, their limitations make the price pointless.
