Feed the Piggies People

For happy piggies don't just pet and nibble give them a grain or two to prevent them from starving.  They are beginning to disappear from the streets and some of that will be because of the quest to catch them but some will be due to starvation.

For new players - feed them 3 of anything you can grow from seeds and they will reward you with a piggy plop which you can examine to find a seed of whatever you fed them.

For instant revitalization if they are telling you they have no meat to give you can also feed them one meat.

Feed the piggies, love the piggies, keep the piggy population healthy!

  • I haven't actually seen any hungry piggies since launch.

They tell you they're hungry for at least a day before they die, so someone would feed them by then :)

  • Really?  So they must be being piggy-napped!  Oh well, can't do much about that except feed some baby piggies and repopulate :D

Thanks Biohazard for setting the record straight *hugs*

  • They could also be disappearing because people are getting to the quest to capture and hog ties 3 of them.

  • I've heard some people saying that they're in the habit of hog-tying them and selling them to vendors or donating them to shrines, on the theory that they would respawn.  I try to enlighten them when I hear this.

I have occasionally encountered some hungry piggies, but only in inherently uncongenial places for piggies to live.

  • I always feed my piggies.  They mostly get lumber.  In their pig feeder.  I have 19 pigs.  I don't do anything at all with the street pigs anymore.

Auctioning hog-tied public pigs strikes me as being really really rude and anti-social.  Real people produce those pig eggs and contribute them to the public welfare.  Pigs never 'just happen' out there on the street.  It's okay to hog-tie a few when you are first starting, I think we all do that when first learning how the animals work.  but if you need pigs for your yard project, make or buy some eggs.

Rustling street pigs for personal profit is just obscene.  Maybe there should be a 'Pig Rustler' award.  When you've sold 50 hog-tied pigs at the Auction, you get the 'Junior Pig Rustler Award' which awards -500XP.

  • With the inability for players to buy piggy eggs from vendors anymore, piggies will have to learn to hide to avoid being constantly 'napped from the streets.

  • whoa, you can feed them meat? isn't that cannibalism?

  • @juv3nal - Think of the practice of feeding piggies meat like compost.

  • There's a lot of piggy napping going on. Again, I think it's the theory that piggies respawn, rather than realising that there's a bunch of us placing new ones out whenever we can.

It's gotten to the point that I've stopped doing this (for now, until I think most people have one of two in their house), as they'd just disappear very soon afterwards. Very disheartening

No idea what the solution is, pig rustling is useful where there are too many piggies in one street (a net to catch chickens would be great, for instance). Perhaps a concerted education campaign? Notes all around the place and regular statements in chat windows about piggie mechanics.

Also, changing the game mechanics so that piggies cannot be donated or sold to vendors would be lovely, or even a pet rock popping up the first time to try to do this to ask if you really want to take resources out of the game. At least this would stop them disappearing faster than we can replace them.

Finally, possibly, an appeal to miners to donate some of their profits to those of us trying to repopulate the streets? I'd happily keep a tally of what's been donated and make sure it was used only to produce animal eggs, which would then go onto streets.

  • Oh, I love the idea that pigs can not be sold to vendors!  I do not mind if the ones I tenderly raise and set free go to good homes, but I hate the idea they are snatched and sold to those heartless NPCs.

  • I agree totally that people shouldn't pig-nap piggies from streets and donate or sell them.  But if I get a piggy egg and raise a pig I should be able to donate it or sell it.  That particular pig that I raised isn't a game resource, it's my resource.

I can see why this could bother some people...but they aren't real pigs.  It's ok.  :-p

As soon as I am able to "hatch" animal eggs, I will be glad to help keep up the street animals.  But I will also donate some pigs if it's going to get me a lot of favor.

  • @Draron - Why not just join A.K.A., make a thread and start having at it, we already have a thread and people helping. Once I have my new house I'll be inclined to help as well, dropped some off at Neva Neva and fed them for the day, hope they last as they give meat options to people who stay inside for long periods of time

  • I thought it was very strange when I got the quest to steal three pigs. It seemed to be encouraging theft, which seems an unusul thing for a game like Glitch, which seems to be fun and light hearted.

I assumed that all the pigs named Piggie were automatically generated. This is the first I've read that they aren't.

(I've been playng for just a few days less than a week, but have got hooked and am retired, so I'm spending a lot of time playing. As I write this, I'm learning Remote HerdKeeping.)

  • Omg i love feeding the piggies...they are the cutest!  I never got the quest of stealing three piggies O.o.  Strange quest, i'd say!  What is the purpose of that quest anyways?

  • Piggies respawn ONLY IN THE GRODDLE AREA as far as I'm aware. We tested this before reset.

  • :O I completely didn't know piggies didn't respawn. Though I only took three for the quest back when.. I did the quest.

I have just learned how to incubate eggs, I shall replace the ones I took and also pop a few in other places.

  • Maybe the quest to 'steal' three pigs should be changed.  Perhaps the quest should be to hogtie three pigs, and move them to another public street.  That would teach the skill and encourage the idea of a balanced population of pigs on every street.

  • Oh I had no idea they didn't respawn :( they give such good favor that i'm one of the ones guilty of hogtying a few to push me closer to emblems... as soon as i can season eggs and raise piggies i'll return a few to the wild.

  • If more people did the Piggy Hash Slinger 1st Class achievement, piggy populations wouldn't be a problem. I've pignapped plenty of pigs, but I've raised and released 103 of them for that badge, so I'm pretty certain that I've created more than I've taken.  Most things in the game balance out, without the need for people to stress about it. If there aren't enough pigs, make some.
There's no need to stop them being sold to vendors, when there are badges to be got for creating new ones. If nobody hog-tied piggies, and all long term players eventually went for that badge, then we'd be over-run with them.

  • Easy solution: add a quest to hatch animals onto public streets.
Posted 14 months ago by Saro Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Pigs do not respawn, and Pig only gets hungry if they are placed in a area with no access to trees.

Pigs automatically eats on trees in the wild so if you plan to release pigs in the wild make sure there is a tree nearby.

  • Piggies do respawn, but only if they are the ones that came with the street in the first place. There are some streets you physically can't empty of pigs.
Posted 14 months ago by Saro Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I thought pigs ate off the trees if they were hungry?

There was a group that was planning to cause mischief by stealing all the piggies. Their group page has changed recently but you can still see the plan to clear the streets of pigs in the discussions - http://www.glitch.com/groups/RDO9PB57HEC2BDS/

  • I joined a couple of days ago and been playing a lot.. so if more new people are playing a lot they'll be getting to the piggy quest. So it's probably a surge of piggy-napping.

But.. how do you know if a piggy is hungry? They still look chunky!
Posted 14 months ago by Princess Sarah Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Piggy's hungry if he's all nibbled out (no more meat to give). But even if he's not, he'll still eat- he's a piggy, after all.

  • I did the hogtie quest... but released the little piggies right back to where I got them from! :)

  • I think there is no question it is misunderstanding. In beta, I hogtied and donated my share of piggies.  But once I learned the mechanics of pig-dom I stopped.  This time, my hogtied piggies just got moved to a different street.  In general, I do not think there is malice attached.  I think most players think the piggies respawn magically.

It might work if piggies can not be sold but could be donated to shrines.  The pig-napping is a fun feature and a great way to get piggies into your new house, even if I am sorry to see them go.

  • I released all the pigs I caught for my quest...
I never know what to feed them.  I guess it doesn't matter?  Why don't chickens need to eat? haha
