Limit players "bumping" their own forum threads

It's really obnoxious when people keep forcing their own thread to the top.  I'm not sure a player should be able to "bump" their own thread repeatedly.  If no one's replying, it's for a reason - they aren't interested.

See http://www.glitch.com/forum/general/11964/ as an example.  Guy keeps bumping his spammy selling stuff thread, instead of using auction or Global or some other channel.

It makes the forums harder to navigate and a lot less interesting overall.

  • Bumping threads doesn't bother me.

  • Me neither.

  • I don't like it either, which is why I support forum upgrades that would allow me to forget a thread (or similar). I understand why the posters do it and why some people might not care (or may even like the bump!) but I feel mildly bummed when a post doesn't really have new content and I've bothered clicking in.

  • The way I look at it, an awful lot of stuff gets buried in the "Cubimals and Emblems for sale!" threads, so why not bump it so people can see it if it's somewhat more interesting than that?

  • I would actually agree with that. In fact, someone bumped a thread earlier tonight and I thought about this conversation -- the thread in question was something interesting I had missed a few days ago.  Unfortunately, most of the author-based thread bumping I've seen is of the "cubimals and emblems for sale!" variety.

  • Still bumping up your thread is annoying. I think they should just get a trade forum up and going so those of us not interested in seeing this sort of  trade spam can avoid it! I left playing WoW due to trade spam tyvm!

  • Bumping your own thread is annoying. Getting other people to bump it for you? Priceless.

  • I get the point of bumping it when a thread is about to slide to the next page, or about to slide, but it does seem unnecessary to bump it every hour/every other hour/every time you happen to be in the forums. I understand some people may be enthusiastic about getting their thread viewed, and though it may not be on the very tip top of the page, it'll still be easily spotted. I know people think of it as a clever thing, and I know they'll be bumping away despite whatever people say in here, but it's just my two currants that it's a bit needy to be demanding replies just because nobody has replied to it in an hour. It's a forum, not Instant Message. So...I personally won't be checking the forums very much until this week's craze of ad-threads have calmed......unless I need a cubimal or emblem!

  • +1 to Casombra Amberrose's comment about needing a trade forum.

  • You're not really supposed to be doing this - people have been called out by staff about this in the past, and I keep waiting for mr. santa to get called out as well.

That being said, dear Lem yes do we need a trade section in the forums!

  • So.... a forum area for sales and trades is def needed.

However, he bumped his thread twice in one day and then twice the next day. (if you review yes, you'll see 3 for 2 days ago, but when the hours were listed it was 2 in a 24 hour period)

Me personally, I don't see a problem with bumping ur thread twice within a 24 hour timespan. And no, I have never bumped any of my threads.

  • When there is no official rule about behavior in a shared space like a forum, the community tends to adopt their own unofficial rules of conduct and self-enforces.

If bumping (and long, self-indulgent signatures) annoy the majority of active posters, then the community will self-police people who bump (and insist on copy-pasting long, self-indulgent signatures).

  • I think we're all smart enough to tell when a thread is being bumped for a good reason and when it's for a spammy reason, the problem as I see it is there's no way to deal with the latter unless you report someone for "abuse" which seems a little overkill.

  • 2 days was the last post?!

  • Um, I like bumping my threads so they get seen, I don't always want to go in-game and interrupt the chat in Global for 1 thing.

    :: shrugs ::
I hope they don't put limits on this.  ^x^

  • Perhaps a "cooldown" on bumping, so someone doesn't bump their thread 3 or 5 times within the same five minute period. Editing previous things you posted would be OK, but adding 3 or 5 "bump" or "read this" or "comment please" posts at the same time could be stomped a bit.
