Paying Customer? Too Bad.

Okay, fine, the folks at TS believe that radical change is good.  so be it, it's their game after all, so they are allowed to alienate as many paying customers (I'm one) as they want.  But why did change need to translate to an enormous F.U. to people who had spent days upon days playing the game?  One example from the housing reset:  I unpacked a box from my old house.  What did the game do?  Scatter thousands of previously organized and arranged items all over my new house.

Is this just a late April Fools joke?  Do the TS people just really, really hate people who *only* invested too little money in their game?

Simply put, I paid for the quality and service I was getting each time I paid.  Now I've got a mess that I have to pay more to deal with -- after all, mood and energy go down and iMG does not go up while having to rearrange the hurricane of chaos they unleashed.  So I have to pay with two of my core resources to fix everything that was broken.

I sure don't feel like I'm being treated like a long-standing paying customer right now; sort of the opposite.

  • Oh wow, sorry to hear that they SINGLED you out like that, and that you're the ONLY person that this affected.

Housing reset is awesome - we got to play with stuff for free and now we have to pay for it with resources, and anything that would cost credits/RL money is cosmetic. What are you whimpering about?

  • I now wish that I had put all of the goods in my SDB's into BAGS, so that I wouldn't have such a mess to deal with now!  What a mess!  Hindsight is 20/20 and all that :p

Still love the game, jus' sayin' ;)

  • Check this: www.glitch.com/blog/2011/11...

I can imagine that you're frustrated and I understand that. But, on the other hand, I'm not sure what else we could have done … we tried at every opportunity to tell people that it was changing, that during the beta period there would be hiccups (it is much harder than you could imagine from the outside to make fundamental changes to the game and keep continuity in players' experiences), we offered no-hassle refunds to everyone and are doubling all purchases made during beta.

We're getting to the end of the big changes (just a few left) and then a lot of polish and tweaks before we can relaunch. But, from the unlaunching till now it's been "play if you like to be on the bleeding edge" …

  • I don't know why you think paying for a subscription entitles you to anything in terms of gameplay. It's laid out very clearly what you get for your money: credits, tokens, subscriber-only items, and votes. Nowhere does it state that you also get the right to have everything exactly as you want it all the time.

  • I feel that this game has been a huge blessing in my life and I finally just subscribed as a way of saying thank you to TS.

However, looking back, I think I should have seen the most recent test thing that they just did as a warning that the change was immanent. I wish so much that I had taken pictures of my old bog house and my new super-upgraded house before they vanished. I loved them and I have nothing to remember them by. That makes me sad.  I also wish, as one of the other posters mentioned, that I had put all my stuff into bags to make unpacking easier.

I wish TS had given us a 24 hour heads-up and a chance to discuss it and come up with and share ideas like sorting our stuff into bags.

But we are all learning together and we are all building something beautiful together and that is what's important.

If they really didn't care, they wouldn't have pulled an all-nighter making sure we didn't lose any items.

  • I have to chime in here and say:

    1. We were told clearly and often that anything we put in SDBs would have to be put back in them after the reset.

    2. Personally, I'm having a lot of fun going through and organizing. This is a one time deal. It has to be done, so why not make the best of it. And yes, I'm a hoarder. I have FIVE boxes. I was about 3/4 of the way done with the first one when somehow I accidentally unpacked the box I meant to save for last. I could have gotten mad and left, but instead I chose to laugh it off, take a walk through the AL and then get back to it. It's not a race. It'll get done when it's done, and I'm going to enjoy every minute of it!
Posted 7 months ago by Audaria Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Liridona - the boxes are separated and labeled by location. So, if you have a good idea about what was in each area of your houses, you'll have a good idea of what is in each box.

I fairly quickly figured out that there would be some major opportunities to make currents for a while... who knows how long barnacle talc will be in such demand that people will pay whatever crazy number of currents you want to put up there.... who knows how long  this boom will last... I know that I will be saving up certain resources now while times are good so that when I have to go back to making only a little bit of money and the boom is over I'll have enough stuff stashed away to be able to do it.

  • Well, interesting -- roughly 2/3 of the comments are negative or blatantly lashing out at me for being a level-53 long-time Glitch tester and gamer who apparently no longer fits the accepted demographic of a "Glitchen" because I expressed my disquiet.  Some commenters understood my need for expression: it's just the way it is and our friends are still our friends (Bertha); moving is NOT fun but alas has happened (Corduroy, and the venerable stoot himself); I'm not the only one who didn't get it and was blindsided (WalruZ).  I've paid for the service, been involved with the game for over a year, and I've weathered a thousand bugs, numerous outages, and two resets without ever speaking out on the forum -- until recently, when, for the first time, I truly felt someone lost the plot (that I'd been paying for).  I don't bitch for bitching's sake, people; and in this post I've been attacked repeatedly because "we were in beta," but I suspect they forget or didn't know we were in beta for a while, then had gone live, then went back to beta.

What I was trying to say was that I was willing and able to weather monumental changes because, hey, it's just a game, right?  But at this point I think TS did something disrespectful of or at least unaware of their longtime and/or paying customers.

Yet, I'm glad I posted -- because the bad blood my concern has generated in this post is evidence enough about my feeling that Glitch is just becoming another WoW or grueling time-waster, unlike the kind and curious place it was.  This concerned, upset post has turned into just another flame war where the loudest troglodytes who can't communicate without ignorance or sarcasm -- and of course zero empathy -- are inevitably forcing the mood and context of this discussion, and, inevitably, will force the course of the game.

All of you who eviscerated me for your various reasons, don't you fret -- I'm sure in the next re-re-re-release they will add hookers you can kill so you can steal back the currants you paid them; that would appeal to the obvious and unfortunately expanding demographic of the game.

I will miss very many of you (especially Millie, my first Glitch friend).

    Cheers,
    TM

  • Question: what did you expect them to do with your items? When for months they have talked about moving box, how did you realistically envision that working out?
Posted 7 months ago by San Serif Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Really sorry you see it that way man. I don't, however, think that anything has changed about being able to wander around, and be curious. I like the new houses, because I have so much stuff that the old house just didn't work! Truly, I was starting to get bored with the game, and this gives me a goal to work towards. If you don't like that it's the way it is, I'm sorry that you feel that way, and I hope that you choose what will make you happy.

Sincerely, and for the last time to TM,

  • I have to add one more thing, a reply to Helvete's comment:  " I don't know why you think paying for a subscription entitles you to anything in terms of gameplay. It's laid out very clearly what you get for your money: credits, tokens, subscriber-only items, and votes. Nowhere does it state that you also get the right to have everything exactly as you want it all the time."

Exactly what do you pay for, Helvete, and what does it get you when you hand over the currency?  When you pay for gasoline, are you okay with it if you get acetone?  If you pay for tomatoes, are you okay with it if you get apples?  If you pay for a month's rent lasting 30 days, are you okay with it if you get 27 days?
Paying for something is *defined* as the entitlement to what it was you paid for -- the exchange of currency is for a good or service at the point of the transaction.  This isn't economics, it is what you do when you walk into any store anywhere, ever.  If you buy a pizza and they give you a pack of gum, are you okay with it if they say to you, "Oh, sorry, the pizza you paid for was in beta. You get gum now."
I'm astounded I'm having to explain this.

  • Exactly what do you pay for, Helvete, and what does it get you when you hand over the currency?

I'm going to guess credits, tokens, subscriber-only items, and votes. I wouldn't consider boxes that don't explode at all.

What did you expect the boxes to be? Reusable storage instead of one-use items?

But you are getting exactly what you paid for. You paid for credits, you got credits.

What you're saying is that since you have paid for groceries in the past, your grocery store owes you the service of being open 24/7 in the future and organising all of the shelves according to your preference.

I'm astounded that you don't get this.

  • As a former glitcher who got bored with the game and moved on, I think any grievances about the game are valid! You guys are trying to vilify someone for stating an opinion about the game. Why do you think it's okay to respond to that with insulting personal attacks? It is a game, don't take it so seriously that you get offended when someone doesn't worship it the way some of you do. I mean, get a life... No offense.

As for me, I will be doing real life things in real life for fun from now on.

  • Comparing to the time & work Glitch staff has put into improving and expanding this awesome game, I think reorganizing our stuff is really not that big of a deal. It is such a minor thing to get upset about.
It took ~20 minutes of my life to organize everything. In my opinion it was actually really good to go through my stuff and get rid of things I didn't even need.
But I suppose there will always be people who are going to be not happy no matter what is done.
Posted 7 months ago by Cocomoes Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The idea that all opinions are equally valid and that if someone states an opinion you shouldn't discuss it or respond to it in any way other than to fawn over the person is a particularly repulsive one that far too many Glitchers share. Responding to someone's opinions with your own opinions is not a personal attack.

I've noticed this in so many threads on this forum - if people start disagreeing with each other at any point, the 'civility' police come barging in to accuse anyone with a disagreement of attacking the OP. It's a great way of poisoning the well and preventing useful discussion.

You said that you don't play anymore Julia - so I take it you just hang around to get on your moral high horse in the forums?

  • Wow, some of you guys are being real jerks. You paid for credits you got credits. If things aren't going your way then too bad. This is beta. There will be changes and we are all informed of the changes as we play. Its not like we woke up this morning and everything was packed up and TS was laughing at us as we unpacked exploding boxes. No. They told us. They're even helping us. This is the BEST game I have ever ever played especially in terms of how the devs treat us. I'm so tired of listening to peoples heads explode when things change like you didn't know it was going to happen. Like I said before after iMG was released if you dont like the changes and your only going to pitch fits instead of accepting what's happening maybe you shouldn't be a beta tester. Leave for a while. If you come back when we're out of beta and like it then continue. If not glitch isn't the game for you.
constructive critism is good though. Express the way you think things should be. This is the point of being a beta player. That's why the ideas forum exists. But throwing your hands up and flailing them while screaming you're quitting is going to get you no where.
    And there's my 2 cents.
Tl; dr- get over it or get out.

  • I don't believe in criticizing people for expressing their views, and folks know I did express mine during the recent conversion to iMG. But I'm having a hard time understanding this particular complaint of the OP. I agreed with him re the conversion and the upgrade cards, but I don't understand what the complaint is here. TS notified us all about the move and that there would be an explosion of the moving box contents.  Yes, our mood and energy did go down, which we had to replenish. But resources are free for the gathering, harvesting or mining.

The changes have been frustrating and I don't challenge anyone's decision to leave or to stay, but I just don't get what this particular issue is.
Posted 7 months ago by Leelah Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @TM - I'm sorry if you thought my comment was negative. That was not my intent. I simply wanted to point out another way of looking at the situation. I know some people are frustrated with the process and they have every right to be. I just happen to be enjoying it.

@Helvete - "The idea that all opinions are equally valid" I have to take issue with this. All opinions ARE equally valid. Unless of course they differ from mine? No. People have the right to feel the way they feel and to express that. I can argue from my own perspective and try to persuade someone to change their mind, but that doesn't mean I can't respect their right to completely disagree with me.

Being in beta is irrelevant. What you paid for is a game. You didn't pay for a personal assistant to play your game for you or organize your in-game stuff for you. You paid for the game. And Exploding Moving-Boxes is the way the game works, one of the features if you will. Deal with it or leave the game.

I think you should just be grateful that TS came up with any way at all to move your crap for you, so you could keep your crap. They didn't have to do that, but they did. And I for one, thank them very much.
