Cookery Center, Wet Bars, and Other Aspects of Customized Housing

As the hopper fills with ideas about what COULD be included in Custom Housing, I wanted to get this idea out there.

A bit of preamble: I, like I know many of us do, cook in our homes, and when we do, we cook in bulk. In my usecase, what this means is I've laid down many piles of stuff.  Some is oriented around making Awesome Stew.  My "cocktail center" is strewn with items related to making Flaming Humbabae and Earthshakers.  Then there's the whole herb thing: piles of hooch, extracts of herbs, and suchlike.

What I'm imagining for (let's just call it) the Cookery Center is in a way inspired by the Still.  One can stock the still with items, and let it perk, then stuff it full of corn, grain, or potatoes, then retrieve hooch at your discretion.  I'm imagining a Cookery Center that one can build using Tinkering.  Then one can EQUIP the Cookery Center with saucepans, awesome pots, knives & boards.  In turn, the Cookery Center can also be equipped with Storage.  In other words you can CHARGE the Center with meat, veggies, beans, bubbles, and various gasses. The good news is one can get all the stuff off the floor, and execute your dishes in bulk, as long as the goods last.

The open question is how much storage?  I think this would allow for buying/making storage to the Cooking Center, ala cupboards (stores beans and other semi/non perishable items), fridges (stores meats, cheese, milk, beer, veggies), which would allow for additional storage to be added on as folks wish to expand.  I think in a perfect world, probably 300 meats, 500-1000 beans, and tons of veg.

A similar idea could be executed as a Cocktail Center/Wet Bar: Again, one would charge the Cocktail Center with fruits/bubbles/gasses/juices/etc., and equip it with shakers & blenders.

A workbench would be similar in that it would store raw goods, bubbles & gasses and be equipped with gassifiers, bubble tuners, and the like.

The end state of all of this are fully functional bits of house equipment, that would get all these stockpiles off the floor, and into the furniture where we could then utilize the equipment to make stuff more easily.

Looking forward to your feedback.

All best,

~Crash

  • ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT.

Along with this, perhaps crafted storage cabinets as well? Just make it a requirement to drop them to access the inventory.

  • Thanks for upvoting. I'm still kind of hoping this idea continues to get traction.

  • I like the idea but will we only be at home cooking? Would I need a second set for on the go? I am a cook it where ever I am glitch.

  • +1!! I love these ideas, CTP :)

Anything that gets all my stuff organized and off the floor makes me a happy Glitch!

I'm hoping that with the group hall concept that has been mentioned, we can have "community kitchens" in various places in the world. They could have cooking tools stocked there (and locked to the location obviously, so they can't be removed), as well as being stocked with raw materials that people would leave there. Then when folks are out and about, they can stop in to the community kitchen and do their cooking and hanging out - without having to carry a set of cooking tools around.

They would be a lot like the machine rooms, I guess.

  • I like the idea of having to charge these installations with the appropriate emblems - like the kitchen would need a number of Pot emblems to function, and the wet bar would need Friendly emblems, etc.  It would give a reason to continue to attain emblems after finishing your icons.  Perhaps they might even degrade in some way and need to be donated back to an icon or shrine.

  • Oooooh, good thinking Scarlett Bearsdale! Very much like.

  • I've also been thinking that I'd love a couple of big armchairs - but not for sitting in to regain energy or anything like that - I'd love them if they had some bouncy cushions I could jump on with a little extra SPROING.  Of course, the second one is for a friend.

  • Great idea! More effectively presented than what I came up with, before custom housing was announced.

  • Yeah, Stuv, this idea has come and gone several times before in its variations, but I like it every time it gets discussed.  I think that it would also be useful if these machines needed fuelcells to work if they were actually going to be producing anything, even at a slow rate.  So you put your ingredients in, you have to charge it with an emblem and a fuel cell or they just sit there.

I'm imagining something else, too - I've said elsewhere that the art in The Lost Floor makes me think this may be an upcoming solution to the herb/crop conundrum (herb beds inside a room with windows.)  We could have an Irrigated Herb Plot installation in an upper storey room if we live in Grumbala or Groddle Island, which would provide the dimmer light and the wetter soil that the herbs prefer.  (Maybe we'd need to charge it using emblems of Mab and fuel cells for the water pump; maybe we'd need to fill the pump reservoir using our watering cans I DON'T KNOW.)  And alternatively, if we live on the Mazza'la continent, we could have an upper storey room with Gro-lites and loam-rich soil for growing crops in, that you'd need Mab emblems and fuel cells to run the lights.  It also seems reasonable that these set-ups would be expensive to install and expensive to run, and would only grow crops/herbs at (for example) 80% of their normal growth rate, so it would take longer to grow.

  • To be safe, I'd probably want my Irrigated Herb Plot Installation in my basement. Physics might not work the same way in Ur, but I'd feel a little more confident without that sort of engineering nightmare above my head!

There might be more of a "real" market if we were forced to specialize a bit more, rather than less. I know a few people have complained about the idea of being able to do everything in your own home, and I'm concerned about how "imagination" is going to affect that. It's not very imaginative to do the same thing in and out all day, but if people don't specialize, the market will be a sloppy mess and prices will skyrocket. Whoops, off-topic!

But yes, I'm sure TS will figure it out, given enough time :)

  • +1 for using emblems to charge cookery areas according to the Giant's discipline.
