Hi, I am working on a bit of a guide of some of the concepts and User Interface on Glitch to direct anyone who needs lots of help. I was wondering; what did you have trouble with when you started up?
I for one thought several times I was froze up when in reality I just needed to redirect the focus back to the game from the chat . Also took awhile to figure out where to get the papers and the most efficient way to travel via the map by setting your course. Left still wondering where to find Oranges and Lemons which I now know you make out of cherries ... duh lol Thanks for doing this, we noobs need all the help we can get :)
I had so much trouble with the butterflies that I had to be rescued by kevbob lol. I was trying so hard that I nearly died from low mood and lack of food. I think stressing the use of keyboard early on would be helpful. And yes, +1 on not figuring out the map interface for quite a while.
Hopefully on they don't change the UI on us again : )
The biggest things I'm hearing are:
a) It's a big shift for many people to go back to using the keyboard. I've been trying to stress when the keyboard shortcuts are easier (most of the time) versus the mouse (best used for sorting inventory and mixing items)
b) Where to talk. Most people are used to a screen-wide bar at the bottom of the window, with Glitch it's on the far right and much smaller.
c) The Help Channel and finding it. Also understanding that the Channels are a Global function and Local Chat will only be seen/heard on your street.
d) Locating the Forums and Groups.
Thanks for doing this, I've only got so much creative energy in a day... and I'm happily investing it in helping my step-son complete a geography presentation :D
No problem, Im off school for a 4-day weekend. www.glitch-strategy.com/wik... It is on my page till we decide on a title and get it based off the main page.
Where to get papers/card carrying qualification. I think there should be a quest for the card carrying qualification, just so players are aware of where bureaucratic hall is.
Also, as Divine~ mentioned, more than once I was confused trying to walk when I was focused on the chat window. Maybe after you send a message, it focuses back on game, and you can switch back to chat with a simple hotkey.
HI travin,
a) It's a big shift for many people to go back to using the keyboard. I've been trying to stress when the keyboard shortcuts are easier (most of the time) versus the mouse (best used for sorting inventory and mixing items)
This must be me.. Yes, keyboard maybe easier to most people but people with a brain definitional problem or other illnesses may have same problems as me. Both my hands wont work different from each other. One hand follows the other, so when I am tapping jump with left hand, I am also tapping run left with my right hand. So I am always jumping of stuff. I suffer from Fibromangina which makes my head not clear at time. More cloudy than clear. Mouse playing is one big point I loved about Fauna, your mouse did everything.
I was finding my way around Glitch just fine with using my mouse the first hour of play day. Catching butterfly and petting pigs. even jumping up tree was ok, if I used mouse plus jump key. But soon found I was jumping into space i had no idea where I'd land by using my mouse only to guide me.
One of my FR friends invited me to a jump off game race. Jumping up the 2 big trees collecting items. That was just to much for me. I found it very hard for my brain to take it all in and get one hand to work differently than my other. I tried, I really did. Found I could not do it. I have not given up hope yet. I only was able to play 2 hours. I really like a weekend to get into the game to try it out more. But keyboard playing would be one reason I may have to quit the game play. Not giving up hope yet.. I will know more after i played a full day or to. I wont quit the game, i be one of those people just hanging out to visit my friends.. :)
I did print out your keyboard cheat sheet to help me get to know the ropes of it all..
ps. now go spell check this note, because most letter are mixed around in each word due to my fancy hand work. xoxo
I use the left and right arrow keys to move through the world, and the Enter key to select objects. If there is more than one object in the area I use the arrow keys to move through the menu to select the object I want. This type of play can be completed with the right hand only on most keyboards (by using your thumb on the space and finger on an arrow when you need to jump while moving). I mostly live on my laptop, so mouse things can bug me and I look for keyboard answers.
The mouse is only easier for sorting and mixing because it can be painful to move through your entire inventory when choosing what to mix. For those activities I find a quiet space so I can see what I'm doing. The only other use I have for the mouse in Glitch is moving between chat windows.
Give it a try next test. It can take a little bit to become accustomed to playing a game with a keyboard if you've never done it before. If you run into issues, feel free to drop me a line. Don't get discouraged... this is exactly the sort of feedback I think Tiny Speck needs to hear. Creating a successful game is all about making it accessible to people - you included.
It's great being able to use the keyboard more. Use the mouse too much at work. The thing I stumble on is where things are covered up by something and I can't click on it. Like the map especially if you're also using it with 'set destination'. But I think that will probably get fixed. And I get really frustrated with the amount of time you have to spend getting from one place to another when you know where you want to be.
For areas where you have multiple objects and would prefer to use the keyboard... get close enough to the object you want to interact with that it turns blue... hit enter. a small window will appear with all of the objects you can interact with... use the arrow keys to scroll through the list until you get to the one you want (with sign posts a portion of it will get bigger)... hit enter. The sub-menu to interact with the object (pet, water, whatever) will appear. You can scroll through that with the arrows as well, or use the lettered keyboard shortcut listed in the menu.
