Biggest "noob" mistake

Done anything in your Glitch career you look back on that makes you facepalm?
Well, I haven't done much that's stupid, though I only JUST noticed the "shake" button for milk... D:

  • Plurp, once you lose connection (by closing the window or exiting the world), your glitch is yanked from Ur... all those slumbering glitchen are logged in somewhere.

  • 1) trying to eat to restore energy when in hell.
    2) overdonating and getting an emblem by accident when trying to spend favour directly for that one quest. 3 times. Oops. *too lazy to do math*

  • Not realizing that the EHSP needed to be sprinkled to work, and just chucking the whole jar into a shrine.

Giving my stuff to a Glitch standing in front of the shrine I was trying to donate to.  Did that one a few times!

  • Salt!

I had no idea where to get salt from.  Thought I just hadn't stumbled on the source...   Maybe a salt tree??  Why not, there were spice trees.

Bought over 200 salts from auction.  Had lots of allspice, but didn't know what to use it for.  200 salts later,  I figured out to use the allspice to make the salt!

  • OMG. I've done every single one of the above. Maybe even twice. O.o

As mentioned before, I have a problem asking for help, so it took me forever to figure out there was a map up there. I was kind of walking blindly hoping I'd land somewhere. Trying to remember street names. Then it took me forever to realize that the map was clickable. That was probably after a month of playing.

Two months later, I realized that I could actually click the signposts in the mini-map to get where I want to go and it wasn't until the week of the reset that, thanks to Innie or Laurali, I was told about the flippin' search bar in the map.

    Not learning BL5 soon enough.

  • Not discovering shrine powder until after my first few emblems.  I couldn't figure out how to get the eggs I needed for quests either so I bought a few on auction.  Imagine my surprise when I found a whole row of egg plants underground.

The snow cone quest got me too.  The devs really need to work on how it's worded or when players get it.  I emptied my pockets to get the stupid purple one.

  • Recently: Donating to a shrine which caused me to level up. Leveling up got me extra favor (all but one of which went to waste). The extra (1) favor earned me an emblem instead of being able to spend the favor on my skill... At least I might eventually get an Icon out of it.
Posted 14 months ago by Rayana Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Oh, I did the donating-the-powder-instead-of-sprinkling-it part. I also did not read the snowcones quest description fully, and since the very first thing I got while visiting savannahs was, in fact, purple snowcone (which was then promptly snatched by a Juju), I decided I had to get them all from there. Which took ages. And yes, I did feed my pig my all stash of tomatoes. At least one of us was happy ;).

  •  Once I was mining, and I didn't realize my inventory was full so it was all just falling to the ground... Then somebody who was "helping" me mine stole it all and said "thnx" and ran off. I'm glad they have a 30 second rule now. :)

  • This thread is awesome =)I wonder what I'll be posting here in a couple of weeks, when I learn more things. My guess is it'll be "undervaluing music blocks", I have no idea what they're good for so I haven't exactly kept any. Knowing my luck, I probably ate the most valuable item ever.

  • Reading this list after trying twice to do everything and get the spice examiner, only to learn from this post that allspice needs to be included...  Although during beta, the quest for cheese was pretty entertaining when I figured it out...

  • To many to mention and counting. The most embarrassing was, right after the "help mine" bonus went into effect. I missed when it was announced, so I didn't know such a thing had been added. It used to really aggrevate me when people came up and mined from the same rock I was on. I would usually IM them to please stop and explain it was considered rude to do such a thing (at least it was in every other MMO I have played).

I continued to do this after the "help mine" bonus went into effect. The funny part is about the first few people just stopped and never said a word. I guess they didn't know either, or figured if I was going to be that way about it I could figure it out myself.

Finally a nice person informed me of it. Now I don't care if people mine with me.

  • @jarhaven There is a search bar in the map? Gah!

@rayana You know you can spend your emblem on speeding up learning?

The first time I tried to use a Random Kindness object I dragged it onto the glitch and gave them the whole thing instead of 'Bestow'ing a kindness on them...

  • ....Only just realising that I should drop my extra crop stuff (like 150 onions) in my pig pen for my pigs rather than donating to shrines so that I don't have to feed them before a nibble.

Oh... you're supposed to -sprinkle- the shrine powder, not dump the jar in the shrine? >_> No wonder it gave me so much favour when I did that. Whoops.

  • The first time I died, I was so stunned that I just stood there for a bit. Then I decided to contact one of the chats and ask for help. No one answered so I proceeded to interact with the grapes. Nothing happened and yet again, I was confused. I was starting to get bored and I figured that there had to be a way to get out. In my state of boredom, I kept squishing the grapes and I eventually popped back to life.

  • One thing that took me forever to figure out was how to jump on tree branches, etc. on streets to get all those goodies that were so tantalizingly out of reach.  Not surprisingly, I also kept failing the tree jumping quest.

  • Oh the salt thing and the gas thing - lol.  Buying these items at auction without figuring out you can make salt and harvest gas (so long as you know where to look).  Then would you believe, 2 days ago bought my first house and it came already planted with a spice tree, fruit tree and gas plant.  Now I drop gas around from time to time (oohhh, that dunt souund too good :-\).

  • Like several others, I had a hard time navigating initially. When I needed to go somewhere, I kept searching on the map until I found the street - clicking to get to new areas until I found the one I wanted and then searching for the street. It was a great timesaver when I discovered you could set a destination via the location encyclopedia. I think I was over level 20 in beta when I found that.

I too have given away, feed to piggies and donated so much stuff accidentally. I hope all the recipients are happy. :)

It also took me a really long time to figure out those eggy scrambles and sammiches were not appearing in my pack magically - that someone was actually giving them to me. I was not paying much attention to chat and never saw the messages that someone gave me a gift. Sorry to all I did not thank!

  • I used to think meditating stopped working when a player or animal walked by.  I went to great lengths to position myself alone on a street, and would get frustrated that it still wasn't last longer.
I thought this because the thing says "Oops you got distracted".

  • I also used to think Rube made "bad trades" as in he would take your stuff so I would always run away from him really fast.  I thought he was a villain or something.  Took a few Rube visits before I figured it out

  • My first few days of playing, whenever I heard the Rube music, I would run away to another street. I thought it was someone else playing a music box annoyingly loud.

  • Feeding whole stock of something to a batterfly instead of just the number I meant to. Several times. Ditto with piggies. Harvesting and clearing a wood tree I was trying to nurture by pressing return thinking it'd be "pet" or "water". Three times. Re-planting those is expensive...  Dying of cold in sno-cone area 'cos of not noticing the effects...

  • my first couple of days - was so excited about learning skills, i thought i'd just leave the screen open so i could continue learning. Turns out, i died 3 times! i come back and wonder, what is this dark place?

I didn't even know we could die!

and at level 20 i finally figured out what AFK stood for (someone in global chat spelt it out for me)

I am lucky i didn't know about auctions. That way it took me several days to figure out how to get salt (but then i saw a spice mill at the vendors and had an ahah! moment) but i discovered it myself.

Also, was determined to not donate (why should i give away stuff is said to myself) until i discovered the awesome spend favour button by accident. Went around spending whatever i had accumulated (wasting it on non-primary skills as it happened) and then running thwack into a block for learning the next skill.

I still cringe a little when i think back

  • My most horrible mistake was spending 997 favor points with Humbaba when I was learning Better Learning IV when the quest that asked me to do so specified that it had to be with the PRIMARY Giant. I have Humbaba's Emblem now, but man, I got so pissed off. xD

  • It went something like this...
notification: "The Rube wants to trade with you!"
Me: "Oh cool, he had awesome stuff for me last time!  What's that?  Crystalmalizing chamber? sounds expensive.  Yes!"
Notification: "You traded 1 focusing orb for one crystalmalizing chamber"
    Me: ":o "

That, and learning all the cheap skills first without spending the time on better learning.

And chasing a chicken past a shrine while hammering on the enter key, trying to squeeze and accidentally donating something important.  Don't remember what it was right now, but I know it got me a shit load of favor, and took a while to replace.

  • I still haven't learned Better Learning V yet (is it worth doing it now?)... And overdonating to shrines more than once... Misclicking all over the place (like singing to butterflies instead of milking them)... Running into Jujus (lag helped)... Jumping everywhere like an idiot because I can never time my jumps properly... *sighs*

  • Awww, @Drakani :( lol

I don't remember much of my noob days.  I think I spent a lot of it in the same 5 streets going back and forth.  I think it was because of most RPG games, where the further you wander from home base the harder the enemies are supposed to get, and newbie areas are the 'safest'.  For a while I didn't know there was more to Ur than just Salatu where I spawned.

  • @Geekybird: What?  Spend an emblem before I get an Icon... Emblems are only worth 1000 Favor if you spend them. Seems a waste when I had to accumulate 2000 favor to get it. I  am holding the ones I get to build Icons first. Then I will try to stop getting emblems unless another use is found for them.

Hehehe... when I first started playing I tried making money by feeding produce to piggies and selling the seeds back. It works, but it is so slow and time consuming. Not to mention the chance to overfeed a pig. And this was before you could specify amounts, so I could only carry 20 of each type or I would not have a "feed 3" option and it would not be cost effective...

  • Not spending my emblems and not donating to shrines to speed up my learning. I did not do any of it all through out beta. I have this time around and wow what a difference it makes opening up new skills. Geezz if someone had only told me.
Posted 14 months ago by Eye Wonder Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @rayana - ah, yes, I can see if your favour limit is 2000 then getting an emblem would be REALLY annoying!

My limits aren't that high yet so I'm still spending emblems on learning as for the time being that's worth more to me than the icons. I learnt mostly short skills first... Gah!

Not learning Better Learning (I think it's useless to do it now... =P)

Giving all my allspice to piggies

    Donating important things by accident

Having 10 emblems and not waiting for the last one before I spent them all... so I didn't get the trophy :(

Having a lot of trouble with my inventory, because I thought bags were too expensive and refused to buy any for a while XD  Also, thinking I was getting milk, meat, beans, cherries and bubbles, when actually my inventory was full, and they were just falling on the ground =X
