A forum for suggesting ideas, that can be voted upon

There's a certain site that I visit, that allows people to post their ideas, and then allows other to vote up on them, increasing the ideas rank. The key to this system, in my opinion, is that each user gets only 3 votes at a time. You get a vote back if an idea is slotted to be worked on for implementation, or if you manually take it back, but either way, I rather like the feature. It gives space for players to very articulately describe what they'd like to see changed, and to allow others to vote upon how much they want to see this. Another great thing? It doesn't force staff to wade through layers of idea suggestions, nor does it force them to implement a suggestion. It just gives an easy sense of what would be most popular for them to implement, if it's feasible/the right time for such an idea to happen.

  • +1, but rather to have a "Nom" button on *all* posts -- there are a handful of *great* posts in General each week, and it would be nice to have a way to keep them visible for longer (eg a "best of the day / week" at the top, similar to staff posts)

  • When TS wants us to vote on ideas, they already have a mechanism to let us do so.

And it keeps people with multiple alts from stuffing the ballot box.

Staff reads everything.  Sometimes one post is all it takes to get them to say, "Oh, yeah" and do it.    Other times, they watch the back-and-forth conversation and see how the idea morphs as multiple folks contribute.

Staff would lose a lot of flexibility with your system. And it would lead to a lot more whining.  One site I use has an ideas forum, and some of the longest posts are essentially "Look how many people want this idea, how can staff be so stupid that they haven't implemented it yet".

So, no thanks.  I think TS staff have learned from their previous experience in running an Ideas Forum, and I like how they've implemented this one.

  • Those are good points WindBorn, you're right, it'd be a lot less effective in an environment like this. Although, I do like the idea to be able to somehow keep track of the posts that have some really great discussion in them... perhaps a rating system? But, I'd rather they spent time on the game then the forums!
