no ultra rare items

http://beta.glitch.com/forum/general/4384/

that topic pretty much speaks for itself. despite there being restrictions on this in the terms of service there is very little that can be done to regulate this.

ultra rare items should be trophies or achievements instead. non-transferrable stuff. even then there will be account trading but this should mitigate a decent chunk of the market.

all players ought to be able earn all items on their own, with no special stuff only available for short periods of time. if some items are only available seasonally, that works. if it were possible to earn a glitchmas yeti again this glitchmas, i think that would be enough to take the bottom out from under this.

  • I love the idea of special stuff being available for short periods of time.

If the item is non-transferable, all the issues go away, except the basic account-selling one.  There's no need to take all the special items out of the game.  That takes away some of the fun.

Why would you want to only have trophies or achievements?  Why not have an item that you can show to people but they can't pick up if you drop it, or buy or trade for it?

  • if it is an item, it just fills up an inventory slot.

if the only thing you can do is look at it in your inventory or drop it to show off for people, might as well be a trophy that is more show-off-able than a generic item.

in the beta tester item topic the top request was to be able to put it in the trophy case anyway.

i suppose there could be non-transferable items that actually do stuff in game, i mean that's not horrible but i think it would frustrate people who couldn't get those items more than if they couldn't get a trophy.

so far we've had exactly one special item and has it really been all that fun other than making jokes surrounding the fact that it is a special item? jokes that diminish the more special items we get? blarg.

  • More collectables would be good. Last year's yeti won't ever be available again, but a 2011 edition collectable yeti, or something else will most likely be.

I would like a display case for my collection of collectables that would be automagically packed up and moved to my new house when I move, along with the trophies.

  • why shouldn't last year's yeti be made available again?

it's just a plain 'ol glitchmas yeti .. doesn't say it is a 2010 glitchmas yeti.

so why not just use it again next glitchmas?

  • Unless it's changed or I am massively confused, it does mention 2010 - maybe in the description?

  • Collectors' Edition 2010 Glitchmas Yeti
A rare collector's edition stuffed Yeti for the wonderous, goodly, splendid Glitchren who helped test the world in 2010.

This item is Limited Edition: if you sell it, give it away, donate it or otherwise lose it, you will not be able to get it back.

    Worth about 1000 currants
Fits 1 in a backpack slot

  • It does mention 2010, but there's really nothing to say that's hard coded.

I understand the position, I understand the goal of the idea... I really don't think it's necessary.

  • Perhaps the seasonal stuff can be converted into a trophy once the season passes.  For example, we got our xmas yetis at xmas... perhaps when it turned 01/01/2011, they could have been converted to trophies.  I like that easter eggs converted themselves to trophies once they were all collected by the player.

And I do think the yetis should be recycled again this coming xmas - why not?  I don't care for elitist stuff that serves to alienate - yetis are fun fun fun so why not let the new Glitches this xmas season partake in them?

As for the baseball analogy, the problem with real world analogies is that they seldom apply to games.  Baseballs can be used to play baseball, besides being thrown into a window.  Yetis can... only collect dust in your bag or be traded away to those desperate to have them and by those desperate for money/perks/whatever.  They are a prime target for contravening the ToS.  The ToS is only enforceable once it's been called to staff's attention, unless you set up a team that just handles fraud or other ToS violations.  Having worked on a team that handled a website's gift certificate fraud, I can say that anything that reduces the need for a team to go patrol the internet for fraudulent sales is a good thing.  Anything that reduces any time spent handling a ToS violation is a good thing.

True, sometimes, you cannot prevent crap from happening, but where you can (such as converting the yetis into trophies), why not?

  • i like the idea of conversion of limited edition items into displayables, but would prefer Keepsakes rather than more trophies, because it would be fun to have a display case *and* a trophy shelf.

i don't think that having a different collectors' edition glitchmas present for 2011 would have to be an elitist thing.  i like the attitude that the kol guys have about this kinda stuff, that the game is just not for completists.  but that doesn't necessarily mean it makes things elitist.  i would be sad if my 2010 yeti were genericized, because i enjoy pulling its string and having fond thoughts of glitchmas 2010.  that being said, no reason why there couldn't be a different yeti with a green hat and new sayings for glitchmas 2011, but something new would also be fun.

  • oops .. but yeah, the yeti item could be renamed, no?

the problem with having a 2010 glitchmas yeti and a 2011 glitchmas yeti is that you know some people are going to want to have both.

i did like the easter eggs / chocolate bunny trophy thing. that was awesome.

so are the music block trophies.

it is also good that the trophy shelf is limited in size so that it isn't obvious if a player is "missing" anything, making missing stuff less of a big deal..

we can have much larger trophy cases in the future of course, maybe even trophy rooms, but so long as the biggest trophy shelf can't hold every single in game thingy everything is cool.

  • I actually like having rare collectibles. Just as some people enjoy collecting antique furniture, baseball cards, or first edition books, it can be enjoyable to collect rare things in a game. It would be nice to display them in a case though. If display cases were possible, then people could have fun turning their home into a museum by collecting items of a type and displaying them for visitors to see. I'd actually like to see more and more rare collectibles. Some, you'd perhaps just find randomly while doing things, others you might get for attending special in-game events or holidays, others you might get for completing difficult quests or for coming first in a contest. Those would become part of Glitch history and you could show them off to your glitch grand kids.

Yes, I realize there's a concern about people trading them for real money. But  does that have to kill the fun for the rest of us?

  • I like the idea that you would not be able to give away those special items...you get 'em, and you have got 'em and you can't get rid of them, so long as they were items absolutely everybody got at the time that they were made available.

yeah yeah  "when everyone has a special thing, it stops being special", but not really in this case.  It takes away the exclusivity, but not the specialness.

  • sure people will want both yetis, but you can't always get what you think you want, and all that...

another reason i wouldn't want to make the yeti a trophy is that you probably wouldn't be able to pull its string anymore, which is totally the best part.  Keepsakes however you would be able to take out of the display case and play with any time you wanted to reminisce about how the game will be much better in beta or whatever :)

  • Still feels like a kid was playing a game, his ball went through the window, and now we're coming up with defenses for taking every ball away from every child, forever. Heck, in this case the kid didn't even know a window was in the vicinity.

A more appropriate response would be to address the issue with the specific individual, and stop play if the individual can't learn to play by the rules (aka TOS)... not to move to prevent the whole world from having toys because a minority percentage can't play with them nicely.

  • I'm not really sure why this matters unless the items in question give people an edge on gameplay.  Even if that's the case, it isn't the end of the world (see Kingdom of Loathing as an example of this functioning well).

  • Rare/Limited items are a bonus to any game. It gives the older gamer community some bragging rights (Yeh, i'm an old timer for sure, check out THIS!) and it gives the overall community of collectors something to work towards. If there is no rare hard to get items then it takes a little of the fun out of it for some people.

DEFINITELY think that the Trophy Case needs to be able to hold ANY single item that Home Owner wants to display. Let's be honest, we all dump stuff on our floors anyhow. BUT, being able to have that rare MusicBlock or special item we want to show off up on that shelf is a nice thing. Just make it so the shelf storage area ONLY holds trophies with the option of placing objects manually on display by the player when the shelf is being used.

  • I don't mind there being ultrarare collectibles. I mean... they're just cool. It shows the stuff you've been through and you can tell/brag about it like some old Patriarch or something. In fact I'd be really, really sad if these were taken away.

  • I think limited edition items are fine, as long as more are always introduced so newcomers have a chance to get their own rare item. Everybody doesn't have to have everything--that is an "I'm entitled to everything that exists because I'm me and I'm special" attitude that alot of people have nowadays, and which I don't particularly care for.

I do not think the Christmas Yeti should be reintroduced as it is (it is intended to be a special gift for early alpha testers, and even though I am also jealous that I don't have one, they deserve it, and I'm fine with that). Having a different Christmas Yeti next year would be cool --it would look different in some way from the last one, and the description would list it as being for 2011.... or maybe something else entirely like a Christmas Chupacabra.

I love the idea of display cases separate from the trophy case. The trophy case has limited display space as it is, and I don't want my trophies competing for space with other items. I think it would be cool if any item could go in the display case. So, if you really love your collection of gems you could put one of each on the shelves and then admire their shiny goodness (for example)...
