Use of animals as food

As a vegan, I disagree with the use of animals as food or any other purpose.

I got to the part where the character pets the pig and then gets a pork chop from him, and I thought that was not cool.

Getting a pork chop means killing the pig = violence. Not cool.

This game is going to take off in a big way. Can't we use that to promote non-violence to all living beings? Please.

  • Thank you, andonida. It's been too long since I've used the Arrogant Worms defense against a vegetarian or vegan. It's pretty clear that nothing in this game feel pain, so there shouldn't be an issue. Even so, it's not necessary for Glitch to be a role model for anybody and everybody, and they do a pretty good job so far.

  • I dont mean to be rude, but am I missing something here. IT IS NOT REAL. I don't really have funny looking skin and ware a funny hat [well maybe sometimes I do].
It is a game, to be played for recreational fun. Fantasy, total fiction, you can't really make a bun with a chopping board! I turn on the TV or READ for the bad news, lessons to be learnt and lectures. Even to sometime be offended. You will never ever make or find a game to play that does not offend someone over something. If a game started to preach to me what it thinks I should and should not do then it is no longer a game.
@Scryble I truly believe you have the right to your opinions but don't think playing a fantasy game is the place to educate others in your beliefs. If your so offended than don't play. Just the same as I would never play "Grand theft Auto" or Call of Duty. I don't like them and don't like what they represent. We all have free will :)

  • Misha, your argument has one massive flaw: you make a bun with a frying pan.

Jokes aside, I think your point is a good one - when games get preachy, they're just annoying. Personally, I don't play COD or GTA because they're realistic (read: boring), but everybody has every right not to play a game if it offends them; the first step shouldn't be to tell the game to change.

  • Is it really worth arguing whether it's okay to gnaw meat off of piggies in a universe where butterflies produce milk, rocks can talk, bubbles grow on trees, floating logs can sell you the moon, and you can make a bun with a frying pan? It's probably not healthy to over-analyze the logic of this world.

  • Well lets just put this in perspective - We are not on a world as you know it. Therefore all your preconceived notions of what you believe is right and how you should live your life (or how you believe others should live their life) don't apply.

This topic is a total trolling disaster. It is fine to live following your believes but don't come on here and preach them. This is a game, a place where people come to enjoy a little free time from reality, don't ruin it.

  • Just because you CAN nibble a pig for meat doesn't mean you HAVE TO. You see the game how you choose to see it. It's all a matter of perspective. More and more these days you can play games however you choose to play them. Even the most violent of games usually include a medic or healer role. Check this out: www.bitmob.com/articles/my-...

  • Also, unlike real world pigs, the piggies of Ur don't die when you nibble them. Just thought that someone should point that out.
P.S. Since this topic is,to quote Stinky, " a trolling disaster," I'd like to take the opportunity to ask how magnets work.

  • Nicely done, Thrindos, nicely done.

On topic (sort of), I just lack the necessary empathy to care about animals - but I totally agree, nobody's forcing anybody to play, and the game's not exactly realistic. If you're squeamish about getting nonviolent meat from pigs which donate it to you, then you're trying a little hard.

  • i still want to hear the justification for how the fruit of a tree that is then plucked from a tree and seasoned with apples, bubbles and potatoes is considered an animal.

  • Nobody said that fruits are animals. In fact, who would say that fruits are animals?
Posted 22 months ago by Letter Jeigh Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Fruit/plants are not animals. That does not mean that they cant feel pain. In fact, plants have been shown to release a chemical "scream" when you injure them. I would continue, but this video "carrot juice is murder" spells out the point well. give it a watch.

  • If you're going to take things that far, you should probably not have a computer. It's likely that at least one (if not all) of the people involved in designing, building, shipping, and selling that computer eats meat, and by purchasing it you have paid a meat-eater, thus enabling him to purchase more meat. What tangled webs we weave...

But seriously, I'm about as likely to stop eating meat as an owl is to stop eating mice. I'm also not likely to base my culinary decisions on video games. I do think it's best that people averse to cartoon violence stop playing before they get to the quest about smashing the rook's egg. Perhaps the pig nibbling will deter them from venturing into more upsetting territory.

  • Okay, I don't really care about what any of you eat, but it's really enough ostracizing of Scrybl and her raking over her post.

Scrybl, if you are still out there, not everyone is hopping on. I think Glitch can take all points of view. Striatic said it best in this thread, and I join you in thanking him for being respectful.

  • Scrybl, if you had continued to play the game, you might have noticed that the vast majority of players are kind, generous, and helpful. It's really an amazing group, so far. The fact that we don't all share your personal beliefs does not make us unreasonable or unkind; however, the majority of people who've responded to your posts clearly feel that your cursory experience with the game has led you to an illogical conclusion, and have made light of it. Generally, if you take it upon yourself to make adults "aware" of basic facts of life, you will be mocked, especially if you choose an inappropriate venue. A lot of thought has been put into the design of Glitch -- much more thought than the little involved in pasting some vegan propaganda videos to a game-testing forum -- and to dismiss the entire game after a few minutes of play is petulant, and certainly "not cool."

  • Yes Robot, excellent suggestion. I'm only posting right now because it's at the top of the list.

Also, another suggestion for times like these: Anyone who is familiar with the futuba-style imageboards know of a "sage" feature. This means that you are able to post in a thread without bumping it to the top of the list. I think a feature like this is useful in all forums, this included.

  • I don't do anything to be "cool." I never have and I never will. I was offering a suggestion. Grow up. We're all entitled to an opinion.
Posted 22 months ago by Scrybl Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Okay. I really, really hope people don't mind I bumped this (I really would love a sage feature) but I was reading old threads, and thought maybe it would be interesting to discuss this.

First of all, I don't think Scrybl is reading this, but if she is, re: I don't do anything to be "cool." I never have and I never will. Glum was actually quoting you, because if you don't remember, in your original post, you said Getting a pork chop means killing the pig = violence. Not cool. So, um...yeah. Glum wasn't the only person to say it......

Anyway...I'm curious, what does the new batch of testers think? I am all for the meat in the game; the pigs LIKE being pet/nibbled and they WILLINGLY give it up. It's not like we capture them and then slice them open with a butcher knife. Anyone else have opinions?

  • I am vegetarian and I think that nibbling piggies and eating meat in Glitch is actually hilarious.
Posted 18 months ago by nekomaki Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm as liberal as they come (so much so that Democrats are too conservative for me) and am all for vegan power and stuff... but, like almost everyone else, I also really think it's cute how we can nibble piggies (and how they kind of treat it like reverse sex, since up until a certain level of AK you have to pet them first), get meat and not hurt them, like Stoot said.

Again, the only sociopolitical issue I've really had has been with the "Gurly" drink, from what I remember. Why is it "gurly"? Because it's pink? I'm a biological male and I love pink. It's one of my favorite colors. I also drink out of martini glasses. And I also like things that are sparkly and have flowers and hearts all over them. Except for stuff at Limited too because it looks tacky.

  • I'm an omnivore, but eat less and less meat as the years go on (maybe 3 meals a week now). However, when I do eat meat, I tend to favor pork... it's just yummy stuff. Thank you pigs for being so tasty! So my opinion may be a bit skewed, but I don't have an issue with the way nibbling piggies is handled in the game. I'm slightly of more disturbed by squeezing the chickens - for some bizarre reason it seems a bit more violent & painful... seriously, squeezing something until it gives out grain, yikes!

  • can't please all the people all of the time.
these kind of debates never seem to be concluded. Everyone has an opinion, as we are entitled to. I myself choose who and where to share those opinions with in a game forum seems a bit missplaced.

personally I think some people just start these threads to get a discussion going, which is actually fine. I like to read people's opinions and why they feel they way they do. Once in a while I will learn something new. I like to think of myself as open-minded and accepting of all (well...most) views.

edited to say: I wish the game was open....I wouldn't spend so much time on the forums.

  • Oh wait. Another veg weighing in? Yes that would be me. A vegetarian for health reasons in a house full of meat eaters. I make some of the best fried chicken around. Just ask. :D

@Scrybl - I don't want to minimize your feelings and beliefs but this is a game, not a socio-political statement. There are many things in the world I have trouble with, but I don't expect others to share my view or use their products or designs to further my cause or POV. Thinking that Glitch should change because of your views is, IMO, quite unreasonable.

I admire and respect your adherence to your belief system, and your willingness to risk public shunning or minimizing to try to put those views forth. Not everyone has that level of commitment to their beliefs. But I think it has been in some cases eloquently stated, in others, more snarkily stated, that Glitch isn't here to be a beacon of one way of thinking. To do so minimizes its reach and its marketability.

Diversity is an awesome thing. Forcing a single POV or position on a game is not diversity.

  • @Stormy: If the game promotes inequality then I do feel it's appropriate to discuss in the game forums. Not that this is what is happening with Glitch, but if someone were to feel the game were oppressive in some way, I would not want anyone to stay silent about it.

  • I'm not vegan. Actually, I'm meatatarian. And I think that being able to get meat from a pig without killing it is abhorrent. It's against the natural order of predator/prey. For me, this is a major deal-breaker for the game. I won't play unless we have to kill the pigs to get meat.

When this thread finally seemed to be on its last legs, I looked at the OP's Flickr page, and found pictures of the turkey legs she'd eaten for dinner.  So I have a sneaking suspicion that the whole thing was a troll... but perhaps she just holds video games to a higher standard than she does herself?  Ahimsa!  Serenity Now!

  • I actually recently started eating meat again after half a year meatless, due to health issues I needed to eat it again.  But even when I was a vegetarian, it never bothered me.  The pigs are alive and healthy.  In fact, they probably LOVE giving away meat.  If I could have people come up to me, massage me, and then walk away with 5lbs of meat, I would be a very happy camper who could eat all the chocolate I wanted because someone would just come along and nibble it all off.

Surprised to see no one mentioned the other argument that was brought up: The crosses used as tombstones.  Now it appears within my few times testing that the tombstones were changed from stones back to crosses.  I was raised Catholic, but I do not associate with any religion (would not call myself and atheist or agnostic either).  Anyways, this part of the game in my opinion has the potential to be much more offensive than the vegetarian/pig issue.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not upset that the gravestones show a cross even though I don't believe in that, but in the spirit of being open-minded, it seems like a simple enough fix to turn the gravestones into something religion-neutral.
