The unglitchiest of them all!

This is too much to be left untold.

I love Glitch for its very friendly and helpful atmosphere, with everybody trying to outnice everybody else.

Then today while I was mining away I met one guy who didn't respond to my greetings, closed in and... waited for my mining to end before getting to mine himself. No biggie, and possibly just a case, I thought.

But then this behaviour continued for about 18 full rocks of mining. Can you believe how miser somebody can be to actively try to not helping you once? I even deliberately changed my rythm in order to see if it was just my imagination... but no.
I even IM'ed him a sarcastic congratulation on his perfect timing, and he answered with a perfectly straight face.

However. After so much mining, my energy is  getting very low, so I IM him: "I'm about to croak. Can you mourn me, please?" - and I promptly go to Hell.

Guess what? After a few minutes without any "you've been mourned" message, I squish away until I come back to the world. And the guy is still there, doing his business one inch away from where my tombstone had been.

I thanked him, and moved on.

Yet I still can't believe how rude that glitch could be.

  • Yeesh. I'm sorry you experienced this, Ayzad. Unfortunately the players in Glitch are still firmly living in the real world (at least, I think so), and bring real world attitudes with them into the game. It sucks when it manifests itself so blatantly like this.

I can relate to the lone wolf playing style, since sometimes I want to be left alone while I'm Glitching. It isn't that I'm not social, I just want to harvest, mine, what have you, without chatting or much direct interaction with other players. But of course I am never rude, and my run-by splankings are always a genuinely friendly gesture. :) It sounds like the player you encountered WAS intentionally rude, though. I want to ask if it's possible there was a language barrier, or suss out some other logical reason for the rudeness, but I also want to point out it may not be worth analyzing (focus on the positive, avoid the jerks!).

  • Ayzad, it might just have been that he didn't understand about helping when mining. When I first started playing Glitch I would politely wait my turn at mining, not wanting to "steal" someone else's rock. I did this for days, until a very kind Glitch explained about the whole helping thing.

  • I forgot about that, Taniya. I did the same thing when I started out! Hahaha.

  • Yeah, I felt like an idiot when I finally found out about the helping thing -- haha.

  • Your story tells one perspective with many assumptions. From another angle, what if the person you're referring to was not as familiar with the game as you thought they were? What if they didn't know what you meant by "about to croak" or "mourn" in the context of the game? What if they just didn't notice your IM? What if they were trying to collect data on the amount of rocks they can mine by themselves? What if they were just tired and didn't feel like interacting with others? What if they were a bot...

  • TomC, you have a good point -- unless you had played through all of the recent changes you'd have no clue about the concept of mourning.

  • Some play Glitch while at work or at least while working on other things.

When I have work, I'm often writing in one tab while Glitching in the other -- I could alt-tab back and forth, ending up looking as if I am trying to avoid "helping" while I mine, but really having no awareness that you are even there, just flipping to the window, clicking it to make it active, hitting enter a few times and alt-tabbing out.  I'd also probably not notice your gravestone, as that would break up the rhythm and take my attention away from what I'm writing -- the tabbing is almost happening on auto-pilot while my mind is completely focused on the important task.

I find life is more pleasant when I don't immediately assume the worst in others' motivations.

  • A level 20+ player? Nah, my educated guess is he was just being a jerk.

No real problem, though... I found it more "so rude it is pathetic-funny" than "so rude it is annoying".

    Saucelah, totally.

  • You said he answered with a straight face...do you mean a :| or that he didn't answer?

I say this b/c when I'm playing and no in game friends are on I cover the chat side of glitch with another chat room.

Could be a returning player, was lvl 30something then the switchover happened. Tombstones weren't interactive and before there was a big stink about helping or not helping mine. Probably was avoiding getting in your way.

Assuming someone is rude w/o them being rude is making a big stink over nothing. It would have taken you the same time to mine the same amount of rock just at different nodes if he hadn't been there.

  • "When I first started playing Glitch I would politely wait my turn at mining, not wanting to "steal" someone else's rock. I did this for days, until a very kind Glitch explained about the whole helping thing."

Same here, Taniya - in most games coming in and "helping" without being invited is rude, as the two characters end up splitting whatever the resource is.  Not so in Glitch!  I love that when someone helps out, they BOTH get rewarded, not just with the full amount of resource, but sometimes extra! ♥

  • Genkicoll, yes -- in both games I came from before Glitch if you touched anyone else's mob or rocks or whatever it was considered stealing. This is one of the reasons I love Glitch -- helping is not only encouraged, it is rewarded :)

  • I don't mean to be rude or apathetic to your situation (I've definitely had things like that happen to me before and I sympathize with your story). I'm just curious why people post things like this in the forum.

There are a lot of players out there who prefer to play the game solitarily. I, for one, tend to keep to myself unless I get bored of the grind and then I participate in global and I'm always receptive to the rare IM I get. Of course, I've been obsessively playing since the first public launch and I keep up with all the changes cause this game is, sadly, my life at times. I tend to keep an eye out for other glitches when on public streets and try to work my game play around them so that I'm not stealing quoins if they are hoping about or taking resources I don't need if they are harvesting (being a rather high level and having all the skills I don't really need anything). I'm not trying to defend the rude player, because that style of game play is very egocentric.

  • Might it not be possible that the player does not speak english?

I don't like to mine with other players either, and I'm not alone in that.  I would have RK'd you and been polite, but I would have left for another street.

  • I am just having a giggle at what his reaction must have been if he had no idea what mourning was, to have someone insistently asking, "Hey, aren't you going to mourn me?  Well, CAN'T YOU AT LEAST CELEBRATE ME?!!"

  • Poor Ayzad. I would have been put off by this as well. I would also EVENTUALLY assume that there was some sort of miscommunication--language, style, whatever. Regardless--isn't it lovely that the bulk of our community is so kind that everyone is jumping to reasons that would not only make you feel better about a weird interaction but that would also give the transgressor an out? I love us.
(why am I getting a spellcheck underline on "miscommunication"? Infuriating me!)

  • My understanding of what was going on with the mining is different from some other people's.  If the other glitch was just not coming to the same rocks at the same time as Ayzad, then that's fine.  If he was coming to the same rock, waiting for Ayzad's mining action to complete, and only then clicking "Mine" (so that, if Ayzad just continued mining as he had been, Ayzad helped the mystery glitch a lot of times and the mystery glitch never helped Ayzad), well, either that's rude/unfriendly or some odd localized misunderstanding of how "Mine" and "Help mine" work.
Posted 5 months ago by Fnibbit Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I know that you are supposed to get something for helping to mine.  I can't remember what and it really doesn't matter to me.  I have noticed that I usually get 50 ore from a rock.  I was helped with some recently and I did enjoy it.  I also noticed that despite the company, I got 48 ore from the rock that I had begun.  My new friend joined fairly late so I don't know if he got much of anything.  He did, however, continue to help me so I figure he was receiving something extra.  Maybe he just enjoyed the company as I did too.  Most of the time I mine alone though.  I still feel a bit rude to just jump in to help and sometimes wait my turn but that is rare.  I usually just move on to another rock.  When I use an Earthshaker some of it is wasted when I have help and that bothers me for some reason.  I guess I just want to make use of the whole thing.  Bonuses are nice but I don't really care one way or another if I get one.  I am happy if I get enough ore to do whatever it is I want to do with it.  Anything else - more ore than I need, good company, bonuses, whatever - is icing on my rock!
Posted 5 months ago by Brib Annie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The way "help" works is that the person who started that mining action first gets extra ore for that mining action, because the other person "helped".  If you and a friend mine a normal-sized rock together from the beginning, the amount of ore you both get put together will be a little more than 50, not 50 apiece -- team mining gets you individually more ore per action but less ore per rock than mining the whole rock alone.

  • Really@this post.  Why start crap?  Why not just move on to another rock if you didn't like that he wasn't paying attention to you?  I think your assumptions are quite rude.  He is probably one of the nicest glitch you will ever meet.  If anyone was being rude it was you.

  • The "un-Glitchy" person in this situation is you, Ayzad. You do not sit there and expect or demand that people assist you. You appreciate it when it happens. That's the same mentality that gets pissed off at Christmas or birthdays when you don't get a big present or when you expected one thing and got something else.

How ignorant. How outright rude to expect someone else to assist you. "You, boy, come here and be of service!" with a cheeky snap of the fingers. Perhaps YOU should have tried to help the other player, and if he protested or otherwise disagreed with your offer of assistance, so be it. But to post on the forums about perceived "un-Glitchy" behaviour of someone else? Poorly done. Poorly done indeed. Maybe you should take some time off to reflect on your un-Glitchy attitude.

As an addendum, what a bizarre view you have on Glitch being a competition where people try to "out-nice" each other. I wish people like you would go away from the game. This isn't some twisted form of competition. If you truly admire that about the game, I feel sorry for you. That's not what it's about.  It's about being nice, generous or whatever for its own sake - not to compete with each other to see who can give more away or whatever.

  • Ayzad, clearly you were put off by the interaction, and I'm not here to pass judgement on you or on the other player's actions... but I'm curious, after relating this story in the forums, what sort of response were you aiming for?  What else could forum Glitches say other than "I'm sorry" or "You suck"?  I don't think you suck, btw.  As many people pointed out, there are a lot of reasons why players don't respond the way we expect or hope, not limited to bad intent.  Humans have crummy AI and are, themselves, quite glitchy (in the real sense of the word).

  • I didn't expect any more reaction that if I pointed out any other curious item in the world of Glitch. These forums exist to share our impressions of the game, after all.

In fact, I didn't expect to be crucified because I found weirdly rude that someone could go to the length of repeatedly timing his "Mine" action in order to always gain maximum profit from my "Help mine" while making a point of denying me a basic and effortless courtesy.

However, judging from Kelti's rant, I obviously underestimated the passion some people can have for pointlessly aggressive behaviour. My bad.

  • I wouldn't read to much into this at all.  Think of all the possibilities:

    - You may not have been typing in their native language?
    - A young child might have high jacked mom/dads account while they were making dinner.
    - Some people don't pay any attention to the chat screens.
    - Although some of use are deeply entrenched in the GREAT WORLD OF GLITCH. To others it's just a silly little game to pass the time away.
    - Was it really a human playing the game?

It's not what people say or do that makes you angry it's how you interrupt what they say and do that makes you angry.  If the person is not available to have a conversation about their game play just simply assume the most innocence of reasons for their behaviour rather than them using up your head space.

    Cheers for now...

  • Some weird attitudes here for a co-operatively organised game IMV.

Sympathies Ayzad, both for the behaviour ingame and here!  I would not suggest you "go away" from the game, which seems a very unpleasant and rude thing to say, but maybe another time move away from such a mean player and leave them to stew on their own?

  • Heh, Cassandria... I would have done just that... except that he followed me for over 20 minutes.

But seriously: it does not matter, guys! If I felt seriously offended by a game, I'd be the one having problems... It was just a spectacularly un-glitchy behaviour, no big deal. (even if he did use the chat, was fluent, etc.)

My only question: more than one people mentioned the possibility of a bot. Can you really program an avatar in Glitch? And to which extent? This is totally new to me...
Posted 5 months ago by Ayzad Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Another possibility I didn't see mentioned is that he may not have interacted because the text in the bubble above your head and in the local chat were too small to read. The newest change to font in the actual playing window has rendered that text impossible for my eyes to see as something legible. And I don't always take the time to check the pale grey text in my chat windows, because I have to stick my face in the screen or cut/paste into a notepad with bigger darker letters that I can actually see. And sometimes my eyes are just too tired to do anything except enjoy the pretty graphics.

you sent and IM to a guy to criticize his failure to perform a service FOR YOU and then came herree and started a brand new thread to denounce him as un-glitchy and then simply discounted dissenting opinion on the basis of some people are passionate about aggressive behavior?

i believe from my reading of the forums that "unglitchy" is code for "does nto submit to my cheerful groupthink bullying and is in need of both correction and shaming."

  • Woah. I have to admit that I'm kinda confused. Why all the hate-spewing for Ayzad? How is expecting someone to use "help mine" an effort to turn them into your personal glitchy slave? It benefits THEM (in time saved) just as much as it does the person they're helping.

It seems to me that - for whatever reason, benign or malignant - this person deliberately chose to WAIT in between mines (which is awfully inconvenient IMO) in order to not be mining at the same time. I agree that there could have been non-trolling reasons for this. If it had happened to me, I probably would never have noticed. It's not a big deal, and I don't read this as Ayzad seeing it as a big deal. It's just a weird little thing that happened, and maybe came off as rude at first.

I think it's perfectly acceptable to note such a thing here in the forums. Social interactions are strange sometimes, after all, especially across language, cultural, and time zone barriers. It can help to get a second (or third) opinion.

  • Ok, kids. This silliness has gone much too far. It is obvious that this thread has become an alibi for people with lots of badly repressed anger to attack others without even reading what is in here.

I am very appalled and disappointed by how things have evolved, and as the originator of this thread, I am kindly asking everyone to just let it die and move on to other, more intelligent/fun/sociable ways to spend the time. In fact, it would be nice if the admins could close and/or vaporize the thread already. Thank you for your cooperation.
