Make me invisible please!!!

So, I was chatting it up in the forums with some glitchers about the unfortunate reality of future trollers/meanies/griefers/and the like. And I'd like to propose another blocking option.

Have the option of making yourself invisible to specific players who you don't want to interact with. If the guy is mean enough, he'll be playing Glitch by himself, thus discouraging further trolling! ...In theory, of course.

Like I said in the other thread, I have no idea how something like this would actually work, but it's an idea. So, here ya go!

*edit*
Also, if you chose to make yourself invisible to someone, that would also mean that you could no longer see that person. It's a two way street so meanies can't use it against other players. I just wanted to clarify that point.

  • I disagree with this idea in a huge way. Are you honestly so insecure that the mere sight of a virtual avatar can cause you discomfort? Are you telling me someone following you around (even though they can't speak to you) would upset you? Well I'm sorry but that's a problem with you, not with Glitch. Implementing invisibility would just be a waste of time not to mention it could end up being abusable. I apologize for the attacks on your character but it was the easiest way to make my point. Perhaps you should spend the vast amounts of waiting time in Glitch contemplating your security or lack-thereof.

  • ...Whoa. It was just an idea. A play on the common 'block user' option. No need to get angry over.

  • I like the idea.  Why not? It could be useful, and doesn't hurt anyone.

  • I think this is an excellent idea!

  • Thanks guys. I am indeed a little sensitive so your posts cheer me up a bit ^^

  • It could cause problems with yoinking, sharing rocks and such, not too terribly serious stuff.

  • You can sometimes tell how good an idea is because people who can't think of anything against the idea instead start attacking the person who proposes it.

Strange sort of complement, but a complement nonetheless.

  • I wonder if there would be logistical issues with invisible people. For example, you're petting, watering, etc.. the trees on a street and suddenly they're all poisoned and you have no idea who did it (because it's a person you blocked earlier).  Or you're waiting for a key to spawn in a location, it finally spawns, you seem to be alone there, and yet it suddenly disappears. That sort of stuff...

I like the idea of being able to ignore griefers completely like that, I just think it might cause confusion.

Here's my suggestion for dealing with griefers. Start with the block feature when somebody's bothering you. If they're still doing things that are affecting your game play negatively, complain to the devs. Perhaps the devs could have the ability to impose a restriction on somebody so they can't come within 1 street of you. :) If enough people complain about a griefer and get such a restriction imposed, that person suddenly won't be able to go anywhere!

  • I assume at some point talking to the devs will become talking to the GMs or moderators, once the game goes live and there are too many people to properly manage while working on new features as well. When that comes around, they'll have to start posting what constitutes griefing as well. For example, would someone mining your rock constitute griefing? What if they followed you to every rock you mined for 5 minutes? 10? What if they regularly poison the trees on your street? They may not need to cover every specific, but there needs to at least be guidelines on what constitutes griefing and what doesn't if the devs/future GMs are going to rule on whether the person is harassing enough to give them some kind of restriction. If there weren't any specific guidelines and was just based on reports, griefers themselves could band together and use that to their advantage.

Coming from other MMOs, I can say that full invisibility couldn't work. There are things more than one person can do, and you need to be able to know who's there and who's not. Being able to ignore what they say and not allow them to interact with you in any way is enough imo.

  • @FrankenPaula: Good point. I'm sure there are flaws with the idea. It just felt like a fun idea to bounce around. It felt "Glitchy" to me to be able to disappear from the people you chose to block.

And perhaps invisible blocking could be a more extreme option. Like, something implemented for use when normal blocking just doesn't seem to be enough. With that in mind, I don't think anyone would invisi-block enough people that seeing items disappear out of thin air would happen. Maybe. I don't know how big the world is.

And maybe it could simply be a strategy to get away from a person. Invisi-block just long enough to get away from them so you can enjoy the game somewhere else without the threat of being followed. Perhaps it would be like a 10 minute super block....

And to reiterate I'm not saying that what the Developers are doing or will do won't be enough. And I'm not saying that meanies will be such a huuuge problem in the future. And I'm not saying that I'm scared of other players. It's just an idea that popped up. So....don't be mean (@ strcat)

  • Possibly they could implement a once-a-game-day invisibility poof, that lasted for 30 seconds. You couldn't do anything except change streets while poofed, to keep from having incidents like the ones I mentioned, but it would give you enough time to get fairly far away from the griefer.

  • How about a "teleport me away" button. It would teleport you to a random location 2 streets away. You could use it both in situations where you're physically stuck somewhere, and when somebody's harassing you.

  • @FrankenPaula: That's a good idea. Much simpler than going invisible for a period of time. And it wouldn't break anything.

  • @strcat: "I apologize for the attacks on your character"

The best way to go is to not make attacks at all when someone is putting forth an idea.

    Thanks!

  • When I say something negative in the ideas forum, I also try to say something that might help the idea, cuz sometimes bad ones evolve into great ones.  This time I just played down my comment.

  • @Tingly: And your input was appreciated even though you saw some negatives to the idea.

  • I just wanted to make sure that I didn't kill the idea.
