Abbasid Ribs and the IRL Abbasid Caliphate and am I over-thinking this?

Simplified to the best of my ability: The Abbasid Caliphate was a real life Islamic Empire that stretched from Persia to Morocco. Muslims don't eat pork. All the meat in Glitch comes from pigs. The meat can be made into Abbasid Ribs.
Is this part of the gameplay an intentional statement (whether anti-Muslim or just poking fun at an IRL religion in general)? Or just an oversight?

  • The circle is now complete. When I left you, I was but the learner; now *I* am the master.

  • I believe Abbasid Ribs (and their abundant use of old(er) spice) are simply a nod to the long-in-the-works ancient land of Abbasid, a region that they plan to add to Ur.  Stoot mentioned it briefly in one of the live chats.

  • yeah, i caught the script of the chat the other day and i googled the word. that's how i ended up on the wiki for the abbasid caliphate. but they're also using Ur which was a mythical city, and games like final fantasy used zanarkand, an homage to Samarkand, a city along the silk road. i'm hoping it was oversight, because i haven't seen anything else that references IRL religions specifically

  • There's also a compound called Abbasidose and the Game of Crowns arena is also named abbasid, where the artwork design theme fits, too.

  • I thought Ur was Abraham's birthplace.

  • It's related to the Lost City of Abbassid, which I'm sure I've read somewhere is located beyond a desert of nostalgia. There's not much to it beyond that. Abbassid derives from the personal name Abbas, an Arabic name.

  • I think Abbass means dear?

  • also, and this might be just me and a product of what i'm likely to perceive - i never thought of the meat we got from pigs as pork. it looks like a nice piece of beef steak to me.

just as we get grain from chicken - maybe pigs have a intradimensional teleportation link with a butcher somewhere external to UR and get this lovely beef/mutton/whatsit to give to us if we make them happy (and to prevent us from being desperate enough to chow down on them directly)

  • We also get salt and cardamom from allspice and oranges and lemons from cherries.
We milk Butterflies and make snacks out everything from onions to guano.

I wouldn't take absurdity too seriously.

  • Now I want shwarma.

  • +1 Jennyanydots. The veggie kebabs make me crave shwarma really bad (the fact that they're vegetarian means nothing to me)

  • Shwarma! Mmm.

And now that makes me think of Doner Kebab and I want that for lunch.....

  • Shawarmageddon.

My favorite made up restaurant name.  For my restaurant. When I open one.
Used to be a nickname for my favorite shawarma joint in NYC.

And now it's in YOUR head, too.  :)

It's not either (those are not really an exhaustive list of the possibilities). "Abbasid" is just a nice name with good Ancient-y connotations that we wanted to use. The meat that comes from pigs is not "pork" ... it's "meat". (And, if just mentioning "pork" or talking about people eating pork was anti-Muslim, than the Qu'ran itself would be anti-Muslim.) Not to mention the fact that Muslims were not the only pork-eschewers who lived in that region :)

  • So, at the Shawarmageddon joint, there was a typo on their menu: Read "Donor Kebab."
I kept wondering who the Donor was.
I did not order that dish.

  • Oh, I never thought about the architecture in GoC being expanded into a whole city. Holy Grendaline, that would make me so happy.

  • What do we call the meat we get from pigs?
    The answer is Baghdad.
