28 crop plots really get annoying

I wish there was something to ease the work with a big garden, like a watering can that waters several plots at once (see plants vs zombies), and similar for hoe and planting.

another option would be to create machinery that could tend to the garden, similar to pig feeder and meat collector.
manual interaction with the animals is still rewarding and most people i know do it, regardless of having a feeder and collector.

gardening gets quite cumbersome in the big house, and i am seeing myself doing it less and less.

  • I was thinking that maybe the higher gardening skills could reduce the amount  of time watering and hoeing.... maybe by only having one pass of the animation

  • I kinda like the "Harvest Moon" model of tool progression: the higher level ones actually do more at the cost of more energy. That'd be really nice for gardening and mining, it wouldn't change much with regards to trees, and herdkeeping wouldn't need to change at all.

  • I agree.  I have 18 plots and right now only 6 are planted. I can't be bothered.
It's cheaper to buy food from the market anyway.

Also the growing times for some of thes crops are silly - how is it that rice grows quicker than pumpkins? I try to find the things that take longest to grow, so I don't have to do it as often.

  • After I was able to fill a couple of bigger bag's worth of crops, I just stopped using my garden in my old 50k house.  There was no point personally.  I was just making more busywork for no reason.  It wasn't like I used them for cooking and I couldn't even be bothered to auction or vendor them.

OTOH, the herb garden gets used all the time in my 7.5k bog house to feed my insatiable appetite for silvertongue and hairballs.

  • I just do for lack anything better to do. . .
    and to get badges.

  • Personally never touched it till this halloween pumpkin madness up date. And I really can't see myself using it again until 1) animation time for hoe-ing, watering, fertilizing is shorter or 2) a higher tool that allows you to do sever plots at once.

  • I totally agree with that, actually. It does get very annoying. Maybe there could be auto-watering-cans that cover 3 plots. But others may think that would take the fun out of Glitch gardening.

  • I always thought that an irrigiation system and a harvester would be handy.

You have a pig feeder and a meat keeper, so why not something for the would-be arable farmers.

  • I don't mind the gardening the way it is now, even with my 28 plot garden.  The only thing I find to be more trouble than it is worth... feeding pigs 3 crops at a time to get seeds.  If I could feed them larger amounts and still get a seed pack for every 3 crops I would be a happy gardener.

  • Automatic watering system <3 We have it in our garden in my RL house as we have a big rose garden ^_^

And be able to feed pigs more than 3 crops at a time and get seeds after how much we feed them - 78 crops = 26 seed packs osv. (80 crops would still be 26 seeds for still 1 pack for each 3 crops).

  • That's why I just buy my seeds. It's too time-consuming to get them from the pigs.

I buy 50s from the vendor and keep a stockpile.

  • The whole gardening system gets a little tedious with 28 plots.  It's a LOT of clicking to get your seeds from piggies, hoe each plot, water each plot, and plant each plot. A mis-click uses up guano too, so you have to dump any guano from your bags you don't want to use before you start gardening.

I got very tired of the 3-at-a-time piggy feeding system too. I buy all my seeds now.  It would be fabulous if we could feed piggies in multiples of 3, so 30 crops would give10 seed packs in the plop.

I'd like a 4-plot watering can and tiller.  It would do a row at once for 4x the energy and reward 4x the experience and mood.  Perhaps the upgraded watering can and high class hoe could do this for people with Croppery III or Herb II?  If you want to work one plot at a time, you could still use the regular watering can and hoe.

  • I agree ,it's a bit tedious if you have lots of plots -I'd like to see *some * kind of improvement .
At the very least , a multi-plot watering can would help -a row or a quad -whichever.
I suppose an optional upgrade of some sort that would allow for "remote harvesting" would be ok too . Although, Does that mean that any "bonus " harvest items like say , a bowl of gruel -would that then drop to the ground ? (sorry if it's a silly question - I cant do remote herdkeeping yet -so I havent seen this mechanism in action) . ;)

  • It would be nice to tie the multiple-watering/hoeing thing to gardening 5 maybe, so people can look forward to it and skill into the direction.
i would not mind doing it (so much) if i knew that i'd learn to avoid it in the future.

maybe the multi-hoeing could be tied to soil appreciation.

another idea would be to tie the number of tended fields to the skill level.

And thanks for moving the post Blanky!

  • Yes. you should be able to multi-feed the pigs. . . even if it means diminishing returns as with the guano.

  • Just make it like Minecraft where you harvest wheat and there's a chance that 1-3 seeds will drop. So whatever crop you harvest, such as corn or tomatoes, has a chance to drop 1-3 seeds. Add a new skill, Seed Harvesting, make it dependent on having Botany and Croppery III. Still keep the ability to get seeds from feeding crops to pigs so that you only need 3 of any crop to get your farm started.

As for the tedium of clearing, watering and planting every single plot in a garden, give the player the ability to harvest, clear, water and plant 1, 2 or 4 at a time but make it that slightly more energy is used for 2 and even more for 4. ie 1 energy at max skill for 1, 3 energy for 2, 6 energy for 4.

Make it that SA III allows for 2 clearing at once, SA V for 4, Croppery II allows for 2 harvests and 2 seeding at once, Croppery III allows for 4. Gardening III allows for 2 plots to be watered at once, Gardening V allows for 4.

  • Just as an aside, I discovered that feeding a piggy ONE zucchini (you may have to pet before nibbling even with high skills) yields an immediate plop. Even starving piggies on treeless streets respond to a single zuke, but, again, may need a pet before allowing a nibble.

I thought this was standard until I tried feeding different crops, which all seem to require at least three feedings.

  • I would deeply love for the final level of croppery to allow for instant watering, and instant hoeing of a crop... taking time is pretty redic :-(

  • Even just a faster animation would be nice.

However, you guys have looked at your XP while gardening, right?   At my current skill level I get over 500 XP from harvesting/clearing/planting/watering my large garden.   It's reasonable easy to do with the enter and arrow keys.

  • Hehe.  I've thought this too.  This is another reason I moved out (again) from a 50k into a firebog home.  XD

  • WalruZ: animation speed doesn't speed up / slow down the timer it takes to do something, the task itself needs to go faster at high levels of croppery / gardening. Also, the XP is nice, but at levels 40 and 50 (and beyond) 500xp is pretty much a drop in the bucket, and not really noticed / cared about that much by lots of players I know. Not saying it's irrelevant for EVERYONE, just saying it's not a high concern later on it seems like.
