Routes...a lot of confusion for this glitch

So as I understand it, there are three or four different routes for each resource, and several different groups that organize them independent of each other? Why do people on routes often have other things in their yards? Is it so they can be on more than one? How does anyone keep the whole thing straight? And if I wanted to join a route (why not, I have nothing to do with my yard really), who would I go to, what would I have to do, and what are the differences between the groups? (Is it supposed to be really confusing, or am I the only one who doesn't understand a single thing about it all?)

  • A good place to start is here.

  • Since it's all player-run, the routes are basically clubs - people start their own clubs for their own reasons.

If you want to join a route and you don't want to devote your entire street to one thing then Lord Bacon-o's link above is great.  If you'd like to donate your entire route to a single resource, you may also want to look at http://seriousroutes.com/, which are compatible with many of the Housing Resource Routes routes.

  • I tried to find a balance between having a useful-to-others yard and a pretty-to-me yard. I think I did pretty well, and I'm on the regular Housing Resource Routes crop route and fruit route, but not on any serious routes because too much of the same thing is, in my opinion, too boring to be pretty.

As far as using routes goes, I love it, and I use different routes when I'm in different moods, or depending on how much time I have to just mess about and have fun. It's really the same as anything - you'll learn how it works and what you like by playing around with it - so come play!

  • There's also a route or two dedicated to just having houses connected with no rhyme or reason - I think Grand Circuit and Chaos Route are two big ones. There's also a little library route (you can grab it at my place) and one or two dedicated to cool things to read without a specific theme.

  • I've been part of the original routes, when tree routes lived at the bottom signpost, other resources (rocks/dirt/etc) lived at the top.  The Grand Circuit (any resource at all) lived in the middle one.

    I really liked that.

But now it seems to be changing.  The Grand Circuit seems to want to take over the top signpost.  There are all these serious routes.

I'm hoping for some clarity in the future, but I don't think it will happen.  There just too much happening now to keep track of it all.

  • Some of the routes have no requirements of the post, and just ask that you indicate via a note or a gnome where a traveller ought to head to next.

  • I like it when people use the note poles, even when they use the expected sign.  It clears up any uncertainty, and when they don't I often fear that I've walked off the route or will (and usually end up doing so!).

Honestly, I think it should be the one requirement, to the point that fellow route members will donate a pole and note if someone can't make them themselves.

  • I'm on the serious metal route :)
I have my signpost point to various serious routes with the bottom sign continuing the metal route.

I also have a notepole next to my signpost.
If you just mouse over it tells you the next serious metal person.
If you read the note it tells you what resources each sign leads to and the layout of my street.

I tried to remove any chance of confusion for visitors :)

  • Someone really should write a wiki article about this, file it under Category:Community. I'm an editor, but hardly understand all the different routes.

  • Ahhh insomnia how I hate thee....let me give a crack at a longwinded reply though.  I'll be repeating some earlier info in this thread..but I just want to get it all out there.

First:  Routes are maintained by players, not by the people who actually run the game.  So knowing people...well splinter groups are heavily likely.  This explains why there are so many of them.

Second: Each of the different routes actually have different requirements.  The HRR just wants you to have, I think, 4 of the resource on your street...trees to the right, non-trees to the left (I think thats the order anyway) due to how they are set up you can be on two HRR routes at once (tree routes on bottom signpost, non-tree on top signpost).  Otherwise the rest of the street is how you want it to look....some people like their creativity..or the convenience of their own items...or whatever.   In general this is why people have non route resources on their street.

On the other Hand the MERL and Serious routes both require near maximum resources on their street (actually MERL is maximum).  Merl is ment to not be compatible with either...but at the end of MERL you get linked to one of the HRR routes if you want more of a resources...otherwise the idea of MERL is walk in...grab resources with as little street switching as possible..and be able to quickly click a sign to get to a new set of resources.

Serious routes came before MERL, just require, I think, 12 of a resource on your street to qualify...and due to how it handles signposts, you can be on the Serious Route, and the HRR route of that resource at the same time (one route is top signpost, other is bottom.....so on serious routes the tree route is the top signpost...while on HRR routes the trees are the bottom signpost)

It really isn't ment to be confusing, it just can't really be helped as it is people..and people have a tendancy to just do their own things.  There are also other routes of course...some to share imagination with each other, some to just let you visit the world....some made just to be basically an anti-route....and for those routes you'll need to find the group/forumpost/curators for them to join em, but to help where I can.  Lord Bacon-o gave this link earlier, but it won't hurt to give it again.

Housing Resource Routes will lead you to the HRR, it has instructions of how to join on its page.  It also links to multiple other routes.  MERL is a part of it.  It links to the Serious Routes, to the "Freebee Jeebies"route..which the owners just want to give stuff away for free.  And the Library neighburhood....which is full of people who leave notes/signposts in their yards to be read.

But generally the way to join a route is simple..find out what the requirements for a route are (don't go by what i said...I could be easily wrong).  Meet those requirements on your street, then ask the route curator to let you join.  Most route curators have easy to find links on their route information page.

  • I'm on the Chaos route but my favourite thing to do is choose one random person from global chat (if possible, someone who I've never visited) and start from their house. From there I just choose the name or looks I find most entertaining and continue from there. Sometimes you end up on a dead end, but then I start again. I can visit around 15 streets before I need to refresh the game because I have problems being on a netbook, so I use that as a limit and go home. On my way I do everything possible in each street and by the time I get home I have bags full of everything!
Some streets are 'serious', some are random and some are empty but they're all fascinating and I find them a way of getting to know the owner - amazing what you can garner of a player's personality :)

  • Yeah I accidentally landed on the chaos route last night and it was a lot of fun! A little bit of everything which was a refreshing change : ) : )

  • I belong to the HRR Gas Route - with 4 trees, the Chaos Route - in which we have a bit of everything on the street as Arabesque enjoyed and the Poetry Route run by Elizabeth Park-Fowl - where you can go from street to street and read original poetry or Glitchen's fav poetry, basically as much of it as will fit on a notepole. This is something fun to do! There's also the Street Games Route run by Yeti Spaghetti where you'll find games, puzzles and challenges to do, that's getting going now and it'll be one that I join. So if you're interested in putting up notepoles of poetry or puzzles - it's a nice alternative!

  • I hope the devs at TS decide to adopt the route idea, and come up with a hilariously inventive way to craft routes that can be followed without the signposts.
