Typing the sad face should make your avatar sad, not angry

I was actually contemplating if I should post this as a bug, but I guess it's one of those quirky things in Glitch that I should accept as is. But if it could be improved, then I guess it's worth posting here.

Currently your avatar's expression changes depending on certain words you type via chat. In summary, I've observed that the following words can animate my avatar's facial expressions:

 surprised face = huh / wtf / :O / O_o
 laughing face  = joy / LOL / :) / :D / hahaha
angry face      = grr  or  >:(  or  :(
 afk sleeping    = typing "afk"

Maybe the sad face emoticon should generate a frowning (or crying) animation. I'm not sure though, but I remember vaguely that the game did have the crying animation way back into alpha. Having the sad face give out an angry expression may lead to some misunderstood context.

PS: Also typing anything starting with a slash ( / ) will return the message unknown command. Yuh, tried typing a few emoticons to see if any further animations are available and discovered that in the process.

PSS: I don't know if there are words that can trigger the animation for looking back, climbing, or that strange expression that your avatar gets when teleporting. If you know, please provide. Having my avatar animate at will is kinda fun.

Again, no big issue here. Just my 2c worth of suggestion. :D

  • There are only 4 facial expressions a Glitch can do, which are the ones you have listed. They can also be activated by typing 1, 2, 3, or 4 (not in a chat though)

I don't get what you mean when you say "misunderstood context." I don't know anyone who actually looks at a Glitch during chat. All eyes are on the chatbox. The only time I deliberately activate an expression is for a screenshot.

  • One more: "huh" will also give the surprised face, I think.

  • Oh my. Suddenly it becomes obvious that I don't do chat much. :D

Well yes, I was just having fun at it earlier and I just noticed that typing a sad face didn't give out what I was hoping for. The "misunderstood context" part was just the first thing that came to mind. Then again, it would be better if the animated expression was more in sync with what the player wanted to express.

@larky lion: I've checked and typing "huh" does render the surprised face. I've now updated my initial post. Thanks!!!

  • The other day one of my mining buddies died and I wanted to cry. But all I could do was look surprised or angry... It was horrible.

I'm serious! We need a sad face.

  • I agree with this. I was a bit disapointed I couldn't make my Glitch sad.

  • Sadfaces are needed. Like for when a Juju jacks your stuff!

  • Didn't realize there were only 4 emotes. I have to bank on that there will be at least a few more if not a lot more.

Also, I guess it matters if you're chatting avatar-to-avatar in local chat or not. When doing that, I look at the screen not the chat box.

  • By the way "huh" and "O_o" will both give the surprised face. There may be more. and the "/" key is typically what is known as an "escape" character and is usually followed by another character in scripts.

  • I do hope they add more emote animations, but I'm fine with those already existing. Typing the :( emoticon simply calls to my OCD side telling my brain to expect a crying glitchizen but instead gives out an angry stare, so it makes me cry instead.    :(

Besides, having your avatar emote in a variety of ways makes for some entertaining screenshots. Also, added O_o to the surprised face listing as per Fokian Fool's comment.

  • Actually, I do wish it wouldn't pick up on these if you are typing in IM or a group.  Often I have typed this, only to have my avatar make that expression when I don't want it to.  The last time was when I was in IM and I typed "grrr".  Had the effect of my avatar scowling at someone standing close by me and seemed kind of rude as they weren't doing anything wrong.  I felt I needed to apologise and explain:-/

Also, what if I'm 'pretending' to not be there, ok well not quite that, but if I am busy in IM and type :), this makes my avatar smile but someone close by might think I am embarking on chatting to them, when I'm actually busy chatting in an IM!

Happy for it to be in local but not in IMs or groups. :) :( LOL, Grrr huh?
