Use of animals as food

As a vegan, I disagree with the use of animals as food or any other purpose.

I got to the part where the character pets the pig and then gets a pork chop from him, and I thought that was not cool.

Getting a pork chop means killing the pig = violence. Not cool.

This game is going to take off in a big way. Can't we use that to promote non-violence to all living beings? Please.

  • As an anti-theist, I disagree with using a cross for the symbol of death in the game.

But really... c'mon. Eating meat is a part of life that is not going to go away.

  • I am also an atheist, well, probably more Buddhist than anything else, and I believe in every creatures right to live and not be harmed. These poor creatures are treated abysmally in the factory farms/slaughterhouses. I don't think it's true to say that it will never change. People are realising more and more that a plant-based diet is healthier for humans and for the environment. This game has the power to teach children and adults that killing is not okay.

  • You dont kill the pig you nibble it and it gives you meat

  • that way. They have great big pictures of Ayn Rand humping a zucchini all over them. HTH.

  • I'm not happy with the way we attack rocks with axes.

Rocks have feelings too. And they get destroyed in the process, unlike those smug pigs.

PLUS we can't name rocks. Don't rocks have rights too?

  • What is disturbing, however, is squeezing chickens until they poop grain. OMG, THIS IS SO CLEARLY A METAPHOR FOR THE PRODUCTION OF FOIE GRAS, YOU BASTIGES.

  • I apologise if I am preaching. This issue is very important to me....

    Sorry.

  • I was more snarky than I needed to be, maybe. I just...don't really see that there's a great concern for vegans or vegetarians in this game. It's certainly not a violent game, at all, and the mechanics of meat are about as far from real world as they could be. You seem to wish that the game would promote your personal beliefs, and...don't really know what to say about that.

I'm also an atheist, one who grew up fundamentalist Christian, around people who won't let their kids read Harry Potter or C.S. Lewis, even, because they both promote sorcery. People with beliefs like that can have serious issues with virtually all MMOs and many other games. And I may not believe in magic, but I do love playing casters and necromancers and whatnot, and would really hate it if every game or other media expression was tailored to the wishes of anybody who might be offended, or every possible person's beliefs about anything.

  • If you don't like it then don't play the game. This isn't a game made for you, it's a game made for the masses to enjoy. I hope they add a bloody splash to the screen every time you nibble a piggy, just for you.
Posted 24 months ago by Johnny Subscriber! | Permalink
  • But the piggy *likes* being nibbled. He *gives* you the meat! I feel they make it clear in the tutorial.

  • It would be fun to have the ability to achieve awards for choosing a dietary path like vegan, vegetarian, carnivore, omnivore. Different paths could lead to different skills? Just thinking out loud. As a vegan, I find it kinda funny that by giving a pig a loving nibble he gives me his meats.
Posted 24 months ago by Conr Subscriber! | Permalink
  • You're being silly. Besides the fact that there's zero violence, meat is a way of life. It's been consumed for years and there's nothing you can do to change this FACT.

Just accept it and move on.
Posted 24 months ago by Chewmieser Subscriber! | Permalink
  • What Hburger said. With all due respect to your beliefs, you don't have your facts straight about the game play.

Other potential hue and cry raising animal activities (that also bear zero resemblance to real life):
You get grain from squeezing chickens.
You incubate eggs for every kind of animal (pig, chicken or butterfly) by "requesting" incubation time from a chicken.
You play music to a crab. And he *always* likes it.

Glitch doesn't really have the potential to teach adults and children that killing is not okay. Nor does it have the potential to teach children that abusing drugs and booze is bad (see similar inflammatory discussions on Glitch for kids), but it does have to potential to teach ALL PERSONKIND to have a sense of humour.

  • come on they give you meat because THEY want to but they never really die from giving you meat
Posted 24 months ago by drakodood Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It's true. I found the way a pig gives you meat a clever way to solve the problem of having meat products in a game which has a major cooking element. Tip my hat to the devs who make nibbling on a pig something fun to do.

  • Off topic, but...Scyrbl, are you really from South Africa? I used to live in Joburg as well, in Vorna Valley. :)
Posted 24 months ago by Roxon Subscriber! | Permalink
  • What I would have said was already said, but just to underscore: the pig *gives* you meat because it *likes* being nibbled[1], but only if you pet it first and only if it isn't too hungry. And if you over-nibble? The pig (and all other piggies) get cross with and won't give you any more meat that day.

It wasn't designed with vegans in mind, but given the reciprocity and the lack of harm to the free-roaming piggies, it's hard to see how it could be construed as violent.

[1] This is supposed to bring to mind people saying they want to nibble little babies' thighs or toes. In my experience, these people rarely kill and eat babies.

  • While we're discussing these tragic topics can I note that the plight of battery chickens in the real world is nothing compared to the suffering of egg trees in the game - they are rooted in one spot, helpless to feed or pet themselves, and die quickly and get chopped up into planks! Yet in order to advance in cooking we are forced on quests that require the harvesting of these pitiful beings!
Posted 24 months ago by EgIantine Subscriber! | Permalink
  • for someone who doesn't eat meat, i love the pigs for all the reasons stoot describes.

scrybl .. i too would dislike a game that forces you to kill sentient animals in order to play, but that's not what this game is.

i think the way the developers have handled it is a brilliant, witty compromise that can be seen to at the very least address animal rights, at middle respect those rights and at best support those rights.

someone earlier said that the norm being people eating meat is a "FACT". this despite many cultures around the world being primarily or exclusively vegetarian. i think this person is at least a little bit wrong, but on the other hand making a crazy forced vegan diet game is going to diverge from most people's personal experience and make them feel excluded. that would be very bad, just like people who invite vegetarians or vegans to go to a steakhouse with zero veggie options on the menu is bad. we've all got to cater to each other's preferences *somewhat*, even if we may disagree with them.

i doubt the game will create an army of militant vegans but it at least gets people thinking about food and where it comes from and might spur a thought or two... and i think that's all it is really fair to ask a game that wants to be inclusive to do.

  • Striatic, thanks for being understanding and stating it in a balanced way.

I love animals. I hate that they get killed and eaten.

There's not much I can do about it, but I can try and make people aware. Who knows, maybe some will change.
Posted 24 months ago by Scrybl Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Wow, I never knew that if you over-nibble, the piggies cease to give you more meat. I thought it was just random when they do/don't, and that it was just coincident that'd it'd happen more times in one place than others.
Posted 24 months ago by Hburger Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Striatic,

I found it really funny to received the Hardcore Carnivore award when I munched 53 meats.

Can we include different dietary paths with similar awards? Valiant Vegan? etc...

Can we make the vegetarian / vegan path in the game more accessible? pigs are everywhere, and their meat is practically free... Veggies have to be purchased ... and the energy levels on munching 3 cherries or other tree crops just aren't equivalent...

Food for thought. (excuse the pun)

  • Scrybl, I live in the States now. But quite honestly, as a white male, it would be very hard to get a job in Joburg anymore.
Posted 24 months ago by Roxon Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Conr, once you get a garden, you can get quite a lot of nutrition from cabbage, potatoes, strawberries, etc. They're also relatively affordable food items right at the start of the game, when nibbling and harvesting cost a lot of energy and yield relatively little.

  • Glitch's butterflies, pigs and chickens are vegetables.
Posted 24 months ago by Tingly Claus Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Actually I think it would be interesting to have a vegetarian(or other -rian) path- if that wouldn't feel too much like ripping off KoL. I do realise piggies give meat freely, it's adorable if really weird :D They don't die, which is great...I wonder, would a piggy die if it was Rooked and no one saved it?

Even trees, when they die and are turned into planks, give a little sigh of appreciation for their reincarnation. There's something soothing about that.

And the fact that I am vegetarian in real life just means that if I don't like my avatar eating meat, I need to deal with that in my own way. It's not really a flaw of the game.

But...I'm incoherent today, but there is a point: different style paths would be cool. Say there is a quest that requires me to make and eat pork chops, and I say, Rock, I'm vegetarian. I can't do that. Rock gives me another quest, or maybe the quest is just dismissed, but my choice is acknowledged. I think that could be interesting.

The crosses on the graves bother me a bit too, not because I have any issues with Christianity (well, not on the level that would make me cringe at their symbol) but because it's a very specific symbol and just doesn't fit in with Glitch's imaginary magical world. Plain tombstones would be good enough and recognisable.

  • Gravestones in Nepal have a drawing of the sun, and sometimes a person, they look really cool.
Since the game is non violent I suppose a lot of vegetarians and people who don't believe in killing will be drawn to it. The use of butterflies to get milk and other animals to get eggs and chickens to get grain is a clever way to move the game away from the real world. Why not have a meat tree, and maybe get fertilizer from the piggies (they are so cute it would be a shame not to have them).

  • Plants are vegetables by definition. Egg plants are plants, so egg plants must be vegetables. Eggs come from egg plants, so eggs must be vegetables. Pigs come from eggs, so pigs must be vegetables. Meat comes from pigs, therefore meat is a vegetable. Crabato juice is another story.
Posted 24 months ago by Tingly Claus Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Pig eggs have to incubate inside a chicken, I say that turns them back into animals and meat back into meat.
Grain comes from chickens, so baked goods must be animal byproducts, unless you never use chicken-squeezed grain, and only grow it in your garden.

  • "Veggies have to be purchased"

you can harvest veggies from trees. fruits, spices and bubbles anyway. and beans.

also you can plant a veggie garden in your back yard.

being a vegetarian in glitch should be pretty easy if that's what you wanted to do.

  • In Farmville no animals are killed to be eaten but have you seen the way most farmers keep their cows, pigs and chickens? Stacked on small patches of ground surrounded by discarded seasonal items. At least in Glitch these animals are free range.

Well, with one notable exception in the last test where a certain player's backyard became a hideous meat-factory.
Posted 24 months ago by bluto Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Chickens also come from plants which keeps it all in the vegetable family.
Posted 24 months ago by Tingly Claus Subscriber! | Permalink
  • lol @ bluto. It was described to me as a "river of pigs".

Chicken eggs are incubated in chickens too, how do you know that the incubation process does not convey some kind of meatness to the animal being incubated? If it's just about heat, then the animal vendors would sell egg incubators. Something in that chicken permeates that eggshell and and gives it a meat life force, turning it into a chick, caterpillar or piglet.

At the very least all animals in Glitch are some kind of meat-vegetable hybrid.
Posted 24 months ago by Nanookie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Incubating chickens came from plants, so they're vegetables, too. Just like real life!

The argument you're looking for is, "as caterpillars change to butterflies in cocoons; pigs, butterfiles and chickens change from plants into animals in eggs." But I deny it cuz it doesn't screw up this thread near enough. :D
