Change is upsetting but this is ridiculous.

Okay, I know, whether you're getting married or divorced, it's the same amount of stress. I get it, change is upsetting. But for heaven's sake, can't we all sort of suck it up and deal with it? Glitch is a really fun game. We all seem to enjoy it. Why is it necessary every time TS makes a change to whinge on and on (and on and on) about all the sucky ramifications of every single (really minor) tweak they are making to the game? It's a fun game. It's fun. It's a game. Stuff changes. Maybe the change won't be sucky. Really. Maybe it won't be. And seriously? It's a game. It's fun. What exactly will the ramifications be, exactly? Is your survival really threatened? Actually, no, it's not. And I get it. Change is upsetting. And Glitch is a tiny island of calm and serenity in an ocean of constant change. And change in RL can suck big time. But strawberries now being a fruit and not a crop? Really? This is causing aggro? Really. c'mon. Pet a piggie and calm down. It's a game. It's fun. Relax.

<Yes, I totally agree. The fact the game is back in beta means change is inevitable. Heckfire, even if the game was in release it's still gonna evolve over time. Stuff changes, roll with the punches and such.>

  • I will seriously be looking for a refund of some sort from TS for all the Strawberry seeds which are now useless.

I INVESTED major amounts of mone..er, currants and time in collecting them and now they've been rendered worthless. In fact, BOTH of my children have been held back a grade since I invested my time in strawberries (which I had RELIABLE information were going to be VERY VALUABLE) instead of helping them with their homework.

TS needs to understand that without us investing our hard-earned mon...er...currr..er...time they'd be OUT OF BUSINESS, and they need to recognize it's us doing all the work.

I'll be reporting this to the BBB and Interpol, and will let you all know the Case # so you can also file as a Class Action Complaint.

I'm looking forward to the changes.   However, if there are people who want to discuss concerns that they have, they have every right to do so and I defend that right.

  • For real, what Walruz said.  There's a reason they offered refunds to people.. because they knew that for some, a game changing it's whole base around and all kinds of elements in the game getting the shaft, would make some people unhappy enough to leave.

For the rest of us who stayed, we sure as hell have a voice and ought to use it when we're displeased, even if YOU think that our upset is unfounded.  If we pay money to play this game, then we have a say in what goes on, whether or not the other players agree or even care.

I pay money to support TS, because I do love this game, and I spend more hours playing it than is really very healthy.. but additionally I do feel like I should be able to voice my displeasure when something comes up that I dislike or when they change something that I don't like, for example when they made it so that guano had to be dragged to a plot to use it.  Well a lot of others had that concern and guess what, speaking out made a difference and they changed it back.  Now I'm not saying that to me strawberries are that big a deal but to those for whom it IS a big deal,  they have every right to complain and expect their voices to be heard.

After all, you don't keep a player base happy by ignoring them, and so far, TinySpeck seems to have recognised that and attempted to make the most people happy the most amount of time.  They've been responsive, caring, and respectful, and I like that about them.  That's why I still pay them every month.  That's why I will continue to, unless or until such time as the game becomes something that is no longer fun for me to play.

  • First, we're back in beta...unfortunately, some players got beta thrown on them when they were expecting a non-beta game...so I suspect some of them may not know how to deal with beta and change in beta...ergo, what seems to be more whining on their parts...though whinging might be interesting to try.

Second, we're back in beta...which means the changes don't have to be permanent if it is something that is not liked by a vast majority for good reasons or didn't work quite how the devs expected in a larger crowd/group setting...so if everyone just kept quiet about it, they would never know it was potentially a bad change, and the game would go into release stage with potentially something crappy...we as beta testers are supposed to voice our opinion - good, bad, ugly, sucking up, complaining, whining...

Third, we're back in beta...people are going to gripe more because of the changes...because they can (and because they are bored waiting on the changes)...but they will gripe in the release version too...if you don't like all the complaining, then maybe it would be best to stop reading those threads (which is what I try to do, unless I'm really interested in the direction that train wreck is going), or find positive spins on the change and present that point of view in that thread...not sure another thread complaining about complainers is really uber useful or necessary, but if it helps you to vent, then have at it...maybe we need a venting forum area so all the complaining and venting threads could be there instead of in general...

  • ..omg I love the idea of a venting forum! Then I can make a complete tit of myself and not regret it the next day!
Posted 9 months ago by ~Arabesque~ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yeah, a venting forum works for me, too. The points about Glitch being in beta and that feedback on changes are part of the process are good ones, and I agree in theory--one comment about maybe I should just stop reading the posts is one I've actually offered when folks are venting to me about the venting. What prompted my posting what I did was my experience trying to learn what had happened to strawberries. I was looking for information since I missed the details in global. So I was sort of hit with all these whinging remarks when I wasn't prepared for them. I certainly give the obvious griefing posts a miss. I was just surprised by the tone (the end of the world as we know it, dark threats about retaliation, weird conspiracy theories, etc). Makes me want to hit my head on the keyboard and stick a fork in my eye.

  • I have to say, Axa, your last two sentences sound like my reaction to 99% of the comment threads on the internet.    :-)

The line between "expressing an opinion" and "whining" is pretty subjective.  It's completely healthy--and indeed kind of the point of beta--to discuss what we like and don't, what works and what doesn't.

It says a lot about how engaging Glitch is that people feel really strongly about status bars and, um, guano.

That said... everyone here (who isn't violating the TOS) is old enough to kick around ideas in a civil way, and to take disagreement as something other than a personal insult.

  • Point of info, Volkov: DEFCON numbers go down with intensity, not up. So the highest state of alert is DEFCON 1.

DEFCON 7, in other words, is when a meteorological balloon causes a blip on the radar. :D

(I had to have this explained to me awhile back, and I live in DC.)

I was playing on the typical human reaction to the smallest things.
    But that's cool too.
Posted 9 months ago by Volkov Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Pascale: It's me wot uses DEFCON 7. I work for government, where the slightest blip in the media can lead to people running around the the proverbial chicken. The blip will be spectacularly unimportant in the grand scheme of things (like the meteorological balloon you mention), but folks respond as though there are incoming missiles and we're about to get hit. I use exaggerated DEFCON #s at the wrong end of the scale to reflect the degree of ridiculousness and describe the disproportion between the event and the reaction. Something that's DEFCON 12, for example, is an event not even worthy of notice, but the reaction is over-the-top nuts RUSH-URGENT-RUSH-URGENT-HAIR-ON-FIRE-working-through-lunch-people-looking-serious-need-the-answer-NOW...all to respond to a child's op-ed piece in the local paper.

ETA:  I don't work in any type of gov't agency that would apply real DEFCON #s to anything; it's more my own silly, exaggerated version of the scale that I invented to cope with the demands of my always-high-pressure, *headdesk*-inducing job. :)

  • First, can I just say, I love the term "whinging."
But I've never heard it said.
    Does it rhyme with "hinging?"
    Or "winging?"
    Or "wining?"

We who live in non-english-speaking countries (USA) would like to know.

Also, would like to thank this thread for explaining Defcons.

    That is all.

  • Golly, if that's the RL react to DEFCON 12, how on earth will they have the stamina to meet the needs of an actual, DEFCON 5or 4 emergency? I mean, won't they be burned out? Won't they be a little jaded and sort of fatigued? Which is sort of what I'm getting at here. Maybe there should be a place here for over-the-top reactions where people can vent, but if this level of invective is sustained for any and all changes in general forums, I think it fatigues us all. Hard to maintain any level of sympathy or concern for folks if they are all screaming at once about everything. Hard to hear anything important because of all the noise.

  • In my world VS, we call those "FLAILCONs"...and yes, we have a number list to go with those! ;)  It often involves lots of running around with your hair on fire...not doing anything useful, but throwing your hands in the air and flailing about (screaming like the funpickle is optional)...oh, if only our glitches could do that...Word Up!

I feel your pain Axa - really I do, and just wanted to provide that alternate POV...it does seem to be worse than normal for here lately - especially with the multiple threads on the same topic on the front page (I mean really folks, read down the list of the thread topics on the first page and add your comments to an already created thread instead of starting a new one...), but again, I tend to think we have 1) people who got thrown into beta but don't get it because they joined when it was live, not beta...and 2) probably the worse of the whining comes from those that are breaking TOS and are a bit below the appropriate age for the game (which I think is what Georgia alludes to)...for me those posts just highlight who I should block and attempt (albeit I fail at this often) ignore in their forum posts. {And as I told my close friends, but will share here - I have a pretty liberal though extremely subjective to how I'm feeling that day blocking policy - jerks, a-holes, clueless folks, immature/probably underage folks, I didn't like what their Glitch was wearing the day I checked out their profile that day, wish I could slap them with fishes, etc...I so would love to see my numbers for blocking...I bet I 'win' on the leaderboards...}.  (((hugs Axa)))

Others have said that we have the more civil of forums here...and I tend to want to believe that and frankly try to believe the best of people...but yea, some do happen to get on that one last nerve of mine...consistently...it just works best for me to avoid those threads...

  • Oh, b3achy, that is a really good point--many folks now here in Glitch don't understand how beta works! So maybe what we need is an entry in Glitch Strategy on how to cope in beta? That is, here's how to cope, expectations are different, etc., etc. And, it's totally expected that all changes won't be treated with yelps of joy and gladness, so please post your thoughts. I am getting the feeling maybe they don't understand they do have a vote and things do change based on what players think. And maybe they all think that it changes because they've been unpleasant about it and reacted so violently (see that? We sure showed them!) I am willing to bet that TS would still pay attention to reactions even if they were expressed in dulcet tones.

  • Some people have left out other reasons such as OCD etc.  A change, however little to the average non-ocd person can knock a person with OCD for a complete loop.  Doesn't mean we can't all play though, just means when changes do occur we are more likely to vent because it's brain frying.  I am totally over the strawberries now tho...totally.

  • @b3eachy: That's IT! Love, love love it. @Arabesque: totally get it that change can be a derailer for some coping with things like OCD (and likely personality spectrum disorders). I think though that if that's the issue, OCD folks would be clear that it's their ability to cope with change rather than the change itself that is the issue in the sense that no one is really out to get them. Still, maybe a place to vent in a really extreme way would be a good idea--that way we'd all understand what to expect when we read those threads.

  • Quite frankly, I've been treating strawberries as a fruit since about a week or two of being able to grow crops. Since I was able to make them with a fruit changing machine, it seemed a waste of time to grow them in the Community Gardens, where available growing space was limited. Besides, cherry trees are extremely abundant so there is no lack of resources to make fruit.
