Is Ajaya Bliss the answer to everyone's foul attitude?

I've recently discovered the heart of the mining community, Ajaya Bliss! Only problem is it's turned in to Africa, Everybody seems to turn into animals and lose all their manners, gratidute, kindness and fairness, making up rules that there is a food pile, and you can't 'steal' from it, I had  multiple things stolen because I 'stole' stuff from the 'pile', the pile is a good idea and all but everybody's attitude just get switched to foul, angry, aggressive and mean, even the nicest, most preppy glitchens go feral and turn into animals, I visit reguarly and I see teamwork and kindness from most glitchens but 50% of visitors are feral, foul attituded, mean- just to name a few, people even say things like this when people just walk in to the street

'Okay, hello and welcome to Ajaya Bliss, you've probably never been here before so I'll state the rules: no 'stealing' from the food pile, you must add 5 things to the pile to take stuff from the pile, and many more other long lectured speeches about 'rules', I think we need to improve Ajaya Bliss, Make it so things can be taken if someone has dropped it and it's under their feet, make it so freedom of speech is lowered a bit, and just be plain out NICE for a change, for some of you that's probably a novel concept, but it has to be done, so I have come to a conclusion that Ajaya Bliss might be the causing for some foul behaviour, or people are just born foul-behaved

  • I love to mine.  I don't go there for just those reasons, it is the most unpleasant place in all of Ur.  I encounter so much kindness and giving in all the other areas that entering the Hell-Pit of the caverns is something akin to root canal.  Please let the selfish foulness remain in that spot and the rest of us can go on enjoying all the things that make Glitch our home away form home.  At least we know where not to be.  :)

  • Used to be able to take stuff from under people's feet. It was considered stealing. If the company's not to your taste, then maybe you should find a more welcoming community.

  • I personally have had nothing but good experiences in Ajaya..

  • If Ajaya is the place to go to mine communally and there seems to be an etiquette then it's wise to watch and learn until you are familiar with the etiquette (a better word than "rules", I think).

If you prefer to be solitary then there are lots of other places to go. I don't mine but sometimes I walk through areas with dozens of rocks and don't see a soul. Of course, I am in Europe and have a slight advantage time zone wise to travel about without crowds but, I understand, you are in Australia so maybe you could figure out if you can go when things are less busy.

If something was at someone's feet and they were ignoring it and I wanted it, then I would ask them. It's not polite to grab like, er, a wild animal.

  • Personally haven't mined in Ajaya Bliss in about a 2-3 weeks, that said it was the first place in Glitch where I have been personally recalled and welcomed on return to a street. Met lots of nice people there as well. They have a certain code and yeah some new comers may feel they are forced to fit in, however I felt respecting the long time players there is for the best. Although every non private place in Glitch is a "public" space, treating the 'rules' players wish to use to have fun is part of respect & makes these places more fun in the long run for all players.

Sorry for the rant, as I said I'm no longer associated with AB (I've given up mining for other pursuits right now)   =]

  • I usually solo mine, but I've dropped into AB now and then when someone has offered to take me in, or I've gone in through a portal, or stumbled across a key. The few times I've been there it's been cheerful, polite, and fun - lots of games and banter and a couple of times I've literally laughed so hard I was crying. And yes, I've seen people run in and raid the food pile - but generally the good mood reasserts itself after a while.

Really, I mine faster and more productively mining the regular streets - but you can't beat AB for the sheer entertainment factor :)

  • Africa? Really? You had no problem with posting that supposed comparison?

  • Please don't use Africa as a metaphor for people behaving badly, and if you're styling yourself as a journalist consider getting an editor to help you finalize pieces for publication.  I would call this an opinion piece, not an article, and I'd make the writing more formal and put in some more time on punctuation and clarifying the point and some of the idioms.  Your use of 'answer to', 'most', 'freedom of speech is lowered', 'causing', and 'news journalist' is unusual, so I'm not sure if you're not a native English speaker or just writing in a rush.  Please don't be discouraged, but your post was difficult to understand.  (I think you can also edit the original post if there's anything you want to change.)

  • I've always thought it was a bit ridiculous to have a food pile in a place where people get hungry quickly (mining is energy-intensive) and then expect them to replace or trade for the food in the pile.

If they HAD food themselves, they'd eat it! If they don't, and they need the energy, how can they replace what they've taken?

If you put the food there, that's lovely. But I recommend thinking of it as a gift.

One can only hope that no one will be so selfish as to hoover it all up unless they desperately need it all.

  • Oh shit, I forgot there was lions in Ajaya Bliss.
    Silly me.
Posted 11 months ago by Volkov Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Why did you choose to compare to Africa? You could have used:
    A Zoo
    Jungle
A small play pen holding 9 toddlers
    Walmart on black Friday

but some how Africa was the best you can come up with. *eye roll*

I think you should evaluate your choice of words before you hit post. Any good "journalist" knows that.

  • Ditto what Boaz Joachin said. Yes there is a food pile, yes it is nicer not to take from it. There is a player in there recently who has been a bit pushy with the "rules" (etiquette) toward new players. He or she is just trying to help keep things running smoothly and help the new people. Also I dislike the "like Africa" comparison.

  • What is that damned food pile there for, decoration?

And telling newcomers not to steal from the pile is pretty shitty phrasing. Saying "the food pile is for decoration only" (or whatever it's for) and "please don't take everything" would be less accusatory and give newcomers less reason to feel defensive than being told right off the bat "Don't steal, you dirty little outsider thief."

  • People, it's a GAME.   Exchange "Africa" for America, China, Brazil, Canada, Russia, Iran, Timbucktoo..........Really?!  Wipe off your hurt feelings and Play.
"An exercise or activity for amusement or recreation."

  • I'll speculate.  Sometimes people come in with a bunch of food in their bags and as their bags fill they want to drop it to make room for more rock and keep mining.  Players leaving AB will sometimes drop remaining food as a gift to the room before they leave.  This could lead to the accumulation of a pile of food that people feel is a community resource but not strictly a free one.  I dunno that players would be justified feeling that way, but I can imagine it happening.
And I don't think you'd want to use anybody's homeplace as a metaphor for bad behavior, even if you've just got the local wildlife in mind.  It probably won't be clear what you mean and it sounds like you have some negative association with or one-dimensional view of the place though that may be the furthest thing from your mind.

  • Africa? No, it's not Africa.

It's the Zenite gas emitted as the rocks are mined. Spend enough time there, and you, too, will be affected, and will become a Troglyte, just as the other miners have. (Zenite is an an odorless, invisible gas, which diminishes mental capacity and heightens emotion - an apt description of the inhabitants of Ajaya Bliss if I ever heard one).

It will only be a matter of time before Mining Vendors start selling breathing equipment to offset the affects.

  • Whatever the purpose of this post, it's now completely lost. Using Africa to illustrate the chaos of Ajaya and the defending it by "heaps of wild animals" was narrow-minded, lacks judgement, and also thoughtless. There are "heaps of wild animals" on almost every continent. Conversely, there are no animals in Ajaya to even match this parallel.

What you did; however, was amplify the stereotype of the wild African savage by drawing parallels to people's actions in Ajaya. This is offensive. I'm sure some people say, "Just play the game" but as long as we continue overlook these kinds of comments without accountability -- we engage in tacit agreement. Then, these parallels will undoubtedly be reused by some moron (not anyone who's posted so far but you never know who's reading) will take this same faulty metaphor into his/her everyday life and wonder why he/she now has HR citations for racial and social insensitivity.

  • I haven't been there since the teleport in was nerfed.  I don't have a key, can't seem to get a key and, frankly from reports like this, I don't want a key.  I live much closer to Pollokoo where I have yet to encounter any unpleasantness and, I don't need a key!  Food pile?  No stealing from the food pile?  Rules?  I don't think that the Devs intended any of that and I am fairly certain that the Giants would frown on it.  When I mine I always carry enough food and earthshakers.  When one or the other runs out, I am done.  Simple.
Posted 11 months ago by Brib Annie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Just so people know - I don't know of anyone who has a problem inherently with people taking food from the pile - they just don't want people to take a ton of food just because they can and without thinking of others.  When people need energy and pick up from the food pile what they need while keeping in mind that it's there for everyone to benefit from, that's not a problem.

It kind of baffles me how people can't understand the difference between these two things. Yes it would be absolutely stupid to put out a food pile in Ajaya Bliss solely for decoration - and that's not what happens, so if you criticize AB please try to criticize what actually happens.

  • Not to dogpile or make you feel picked on, since you probably had no idea why it was a problem, but I gotta co-sign the Africa comment being really freaking othering and offensive in a colonialist/racist capacity. While I'm sure you weren't trying to hurt or other anyone, the privilege/judgment that went into making it deserves some unpacking and deep examination.

I only visited AB once.. Which was 1 too many times for me.  So many rocks elswhere.. so little time :)

Miss Purple, I guess you've taken enough licks here, from many posters more eloquent than me.   Please give more thought to your future journalistic endeavors.

When I go out to mine.. I actually am doing that to bring home resources (I bring plenty of food and, like Brib Annie, when it runs out.. I'm done).  AB holds no attraction for me personally.

  • @diaveborn: "When people need energy and pick up from the food pile what they need while keeping in mind that it's there for everyone to benefit from, that's not a problem."

A lot of people don't understand and/or disagree with socialism.  That's just the deal.

  • @Kalstept Socialism? Wat?

Some people don't understand and/or agree with generosity, kindness, sharing, etiquette, or courtesy. That's just the deal.

Fortunately, Glitch is a game of abundance, and there are always people with more resources than they need who are willing to give them away, because it's fun and nice and it gives greedy individuals with the lust to take, take, take an opportunity to reveal themselves. They think they're getting one over, but really they're just missing out on the genuine pleasure of an environment where being an inconsiderate jerk doesn't really confer any long-term advantage.
Posted 11 months ago by Pascale Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Nope. Paper it over with all the flowery language you like. Agreed, this is a world of abundance, which makes the actions of those who grab seem craven and shallow. But the food pile IS socialism as those who construct it wish it to be operated.  Why mince words? Is it so horrible to acknowledge it for what it is?

Adopting a scolding judgmental tone changes nothing.
