Hopes for more peace and good will in Wickdoon Mood

On a deadend street very near my house in Groddle Meadow, 4 wood trees were long ago planted in the 4 tree spots by a group calling itself Wickdoon Wood Preserve. Recently, some kind of wood tree war has broken out with a couple of avatars poisoning all the wood trees in Glitch, including those on Wickdoon Mood.

Anyway, people in WWP (a group that now includes me) have been hearing a lot of feedback form the community about wood trees on Wickdoon Mood. Obviously people with wood quests like to be able to find at least one wood tree in very good condition somewhere. On the other hand, a street with only wood treees means that pigs will starve unless fed.

I proposed to the WWP group, and so far everybody in the group liked the idea, that in the future we try to keep 3 wood trees only in Wickdoon Mood. When I say "try to keep" I mean that other players obviously also have quests to kill trees, plant trees, etc. Other players have just as much right to poison a wood tree and replace it with another bean tree as I have to poison a bean tree and plant a wood bean, on any public street in Glitch including Wickdoon Mood.

So I can't dictate to anybody what trees they should or shouldn't poison, but I personally would like to respond to those who worry about hungry pigs while keeping a few wood trees in good condition in one public and predictable deadend street.

///Correction (see below): I was mistaken: Wickdoon Mood got its wood trees before any group formed to promote them. See for instance www.glitch.com/locations/LC...

  • their would be tons MORE wood trees if they didnt insist on forcing 4 into a 4 tree zone that many people like having pigs in etc. me, flask and a few others have proved there is literally tons of wood trees most days anyway, and there are multiple websites for finding them.

Currently? That would be one, that you're trying to poison. Bean trees? Over 400. Hoisted by your own petard.

And [removed]? Next time you embark upon one of your repetitive moans about the cruel, cruel unbalancing of the game by the presence of herb plots in dirty bog houses, I'll probably decide against sending you stacks upon stacks of herbs grown in said dirty bog house.

The most malignant unbalancing of the game right now is that it takes just one determined malcontent to crap all over most of the elements of emergent play that develop in quiet corners of the map. It's that lack of balance which creates the hair-trigger collective response, and I'm coming to believe that that;'s not structurally fixable at this point in time.

And for the record: let's just say that I'm highly sceptical that a player with a home in Andra (that hosts 4 bean trees) would somehow be concerned about the scarcity of bean trees or the survival of piggies on a street in Groddle Meadow (60+ bean trees, 151 piggies) if it didn't come with the prospect of kicking off a fight with the group of players who have tried to preserve a few wood trees on that street. Don't pee on our legs and tell us it's raining.

  • Holgate, you seem to be completely out of touch with the topic.

we are proving there are many wood trees eevryday because we are using resources killing them all over the place, every single day more pop up. the reason you see none now is because I made a clean sweep.

when the "rule" of 4 wood in wickdoon ends, the wood killing will end.

I make profit by donating/selling planks, I sell tons more wood tree beans and I restrict a particular market while not being tied down by some groups made up rules. All I have really done is increase the rate at which I profit within the game rules.

so what exactly is your problem ?

ps: edit out the sociopath comment, no need to get ridiculous over some ingame trees.

  • "We'd like this to be a certain way."
"You can't tell me what to do."
    "Can too!"
"Can't! To prove it, I'm going to take away everybody else's access to the thing you're trying to promote. Neener neener neener."

Which is least generous: a group of people deciding that one street should have a specific feature, or one person deciding that an entire species should be wiped from the face of Ur?

It's a race to the bottom. Currently the wood poisoners are winning. Congratulations, or something.

  • Hm, it is almost interesting to read this thread in comparison to the herb garden threads, given that there is a difference between faceless griefers and 2 groups in an all-out war.

The end result is the same, though, as it is a conflict.  Not that this one is any better than the other.

As an aside, Innie, you made a comment about this war being like middle school.  The thing is, throughout all of human history, and all of any given adult's lives, the conflicts that we see as obvious in school become buried and more subtle as socialized manners take over.  People take their fights to levels that are typically not commonly seen.  It is only when they are seen that people liken it to school, as that is the last place that fights are so obvious.

It is not behavior, then, that can be likened to that age group, it is only behavior that can be likened to just...normal human psychology.

Humans want control, it is a basic need, and it manifests in so many different ways.  For some people, control of themselves is all they need, and for others, their surroundings.  We see this behavior at all ages, and thus, it is discord that results when people clash.  Entirely normal, entirely not middle-school only.

    Ok, now bed.

  • Well, I see what the wood tree group is doing as a service. It's one street out of 500+. Wood trees are "rare" and knowing there is a street that has them constantly is a good thing. And really, one street is all we need until planks get a better purpose.

Also, I had nothing but pleasant experiences with the wood tree group nor have I seen them abuse anyone. In fact, I've seen them being akin to a doormat when it comes to dealing with the people who don't want wood trees there. I watched personally as one of them tried to compromise and some guy named flask just spit in his face and was really rude.

I've never run into hungry piggies there either.

i wouldn't have mentioned it, but when the worst offender comes out to protest mightily about cleanness, that's got to be stopped.

nobody there EVER tried to compromise. somebody there tried to spread smarmy bullshit disguised as negotiation, but when people's negotiation position is to talk to you as if you're a slow child and wouldn't you just really be happier if you submitted out our rules?

because our rules are for everybody's good and if you only see reason it would be better for everybody?

point of fact: it's not possible to spit in anyone's face. it is possible to call someone "fucking idiot" in local chat. which claim holds the most water?

The group just sort of formed around that cause after the fact. To this day I think the group constitutes maybe 1/4 of the people who use and cultivate the wood trees there although I must admit it is probably the more active and vocal 1/4.

It's just some trees on a single street. I don't see how people can have problem with this. -shrug- : )

  • You know, I haven't been to Wickodoon since prior to the formation of the WWP (and yes, I can attest to the fact that wood trees were there before I saw a thread about the WWP), and I really don't have a horse in this race.

However, flask, the way you're acting in this thread is just heinous.  You're tempting me to make that one of my daily stops just to tend the wood trees, just because of your attitude.

And for what it's worth, I believe both sides are being sincere in this thread; therefore, no one is trolling.  "Trolling" does not mean someone saying things you happen to disagree with.

  • that's ok, the more people tend to the wood trees, the more money i make before i kill them.

anyone who wishes wood trees to prosper should back off.

anyone who hasn't netted a million and a half currants from the wood war is playing the wrong side of the game.

anyone who believes that one group should decide  what can and cannot be planted in a street is just wrong.

my protest against it is extreme, but it's getting noticed. and i'm getting rich.

it is regrettable to have had to turn against the wood trees i loved to make my point, but my point is being made and i hate groups making rules for the "benefit" of the rest of us more than i loved wood trees.

that first day when i was told "we have taken over this street and it is now a wood preserve" i thought: "oh, yeah? what gives you the right?"

anyone is welcome to plant anything anywhere. it's just that as long as some people are undertaking to control what can be planted in wickodoon, i will be waging a war against wood trees everywhere i can find them.

    unfortunate collateral damage, that.

  • I'm just here for the show; I've been to this apparently-accursed street precisely twice, ever, and (rather successfully) played while visiting a grand total of not at all in the past two months.

In reading this thread, I can only be reassured that, regardless of what any of you/us/they ultimately choose to do, the vast majority of Glitch can continue to play in their own merry way, entirely, utterly, and completely unaffected by this thing that seems to have eaten your Glitchy souls.

  • too many people trying to be smart ^^

Most of the vocal members have made it clear where they stand, I am happy to continue this profitable war for as long as I still play. I suggested a few reasonable alternatives and they were rejected by the Wood preserve group.

as far as they are concerned the only solution is me giving up or finding something else to do. very immature and proves over and over that they are just power hungry bullies.

I cannot condemn the entire group when it is probably just a handful that are controlling the groups actions but it is hard to take any of them seriously when so many others in the group are speaking for them, with this unreasonable situation they refuse to compromise on.

  • What is the slightest bit unreasonable about maintaining and tending wood trees?

I wish you luck [removed] -- there are much better ways to make money than planks, but if you'd prefer to cripple yourself just to cause irritation to others -- well, I'm sure your mother thinks you are a wonderful person still.

I also find it rather disturbing that you could be so irritated with their desire to have wood trees on a single street that you would dedicate your game time to such a mission.

    I honestly pity you.

  • How is [removed] crippling himself? Like he said, he is making money poisoning wood trees. And so what if he is dedicating his time to the game in such a manner. I think he is still enjoying the game so I think your pity has found a empty vessel. I say send your pity to someone else more deserving like starving kids somewhere.

What is the slightest bit unreasonable about maintaining and tending wood trees?  Nothing as long as the person/persons are not bullying others that have another opinion and is not trying to push their beliefs on others that think differently. However that is not the case and flask has decided to do something about it.

Someone offered [removed] that and he spat in his face.

Let the tantrum continue, he won't win as there's only like 2 people who care about his cause and a lot more that side with the wood group. Majority rules, welcome to sandbox games.

Also about the money-making statement: He doesn't make money hounding the map making sure no one kills his trees for 15 hours straight. And money has no use after you get a house, unless you like collecting things for badges. After I bought my 50k house I took to hosting parties and helping friends just starting the game.

  • Seriously people, stop feeding the sociopaths.

They are here for the negative attention. Why give it to them? You are just wasting your time. Plant what you want to where you want to and don't bother bickering with those who come along to undo it to get a rise out of you. Once in a blue moon you will even run into someone who has a real reason for doing so, rather than just to thrive on causing conflict. There about half a dozen to a dozen people who like to kill the wood trees and at least a hundred to several hundred who like to plant them so in the end the trees are going to be there just by popular demand.

It takes longer to sit here and bicker about it than it does to simply go replant. It's no big deal. If people want to go around with nothing better to do than spread ill will then let them. In the end it will their souls that are left hollow inside. No need to internalize their demons by fighting with them.

Peace out and have fun. : )

Please stop using half-baked pop-psych garbage jargon to name-call other players.  You're almost certainly not qualified to use those terms.

It isn't about the trees, it's about the arrogance and gang-like behavior of a small group. Flask certainly reacts to an extent further than anybody else I know, but many are growing tired of the sanctimony displayed by the Wickdoon Wood Gang.  Many who don't speak up.  Not that it matters.  At least you all have your 'mission' and it keeps you from meddling in other areas of Ur.

  • Psibertus my friend, I was having dinner, sorry for the late reply.

I don't have a reason to have only 4 wood trees (anymore) I even said that in a reply on the other thread.

Here's pretty much the summary of what I said:

-If there are three wood trees on a street, and one non-wood tree, I will not go out of my way to kill it.
-If there are only wood trees on a street, I will not go out of my way to kill one, and put one something else in its place.
-Our group is fragmented with ideals and such. We believe different things, but have an interest in one thing. Wood. Why is wood used? To make monies :D. And does having more wood lead to making more money? Yes, yes it does. Is that the only reason some peeps keep it all wood? No.

Let's take yesterday's event: I went to wickdoon, there was only one bean tree, and three wood trees, I left it alone and moved on, so did my fellow admin. I came the next day, and it was all wood trees. Then in an hour or so, the place was filled with bean trees, then as soon as I slipped the word, it was back to wood trees. I have yet to kill a tree.  I did try to kill cherry trees that Audaria had planted so I could put some wood, and I did try talking to her, but she didn't seem to get what I was saying.

Wood Trees not rare and sustainable? Depends when you are online.

  • Having a player-maintained street of wood trees is definitely a lovely example of emergent game play. I've strolled through Wickdoon Mood and been gratified to find wood trees there, and have contributed to maintaining them myself.

However, even groups that are particularly keen on creating tree enclaves have to recognize that this world is one shared by all players, and no public street can be owned or policed by an individual group. Emergent gameplay is constantly in flux: tree-killing campaigns are just as much a part of this dynamic as Wickdoon Mood is itself. And it's in every player's power to respond to one trend with one of their own (an antidote brigade for example).

But whatever contribution you are making to the game community, no one has a free pass on how they behave towards other players when it comes to things like language, continuous taunting, and excessive splanking. These are griefing, not the act of killing or antidoting a tree alone.

And finally, but most importantly within the context of this particular thread, calling out other players and leaving comments intended as directed insults towards other posters is not ok. I will remove the player names or insults when I see them, and I will block those who continue to do so from using the forums at all.

  • Emergent gameplay is constantly in flux: tree-killing campaigns are just as much a part of this dynamic as Wickdoon Mood is itself.

    That's weak sauce, Blanky.

The existing dynamic is currently lopsided in favour of individual players who want to crap over collaborative emergent gameplay. There's no in-game way to cultivate public spaces in a way that avoids tedious recursion to the mean, which forces creativity behind closed doors, and makes building out the map a pretty futile activity, given that Region Street A is going to be just like Region Street B with a slightly different backdrop. (The Sandbox group is doing lovely things, but it's obviously limited to ultra-peripheral activities. It's a tiny, tiny box.)

In this context, the official "shared world" policy is becoming reminiscent of inept nursery school teachers unconvincingly convincing themselves that the kiddiwinks who use the sandpit as a litter box are just demonstrating their creative impulses. (The first step is admitting you have a problem.)

Finally: an official policy that declares systematic polsoning/antidoting legitimate gameplay, neglects to provide adequate defence mechanisms against such gameplay, and maintains an absolutist no-callout rule that attempts to prevent such gameplay being subject to peer judgement, is bullshit.

  • Holgate, I did not mean to imply that the balance is perfect, merely that there are other ways to respond to actions you don't agree with than turning to shaming and harassment. As to the imbalances: that is why we are back in beta, and why features like Group Halls will bring a lot to the game in the future and provide areas where like-minded players will have a bit more control over game environments.

As to the callout rule, no individual player's actions should be up for public discussion in a channel meant for conversations about things that impact the entire community. The General Forum is exactly the place to talk about larger game dynamics (as well as areas that may be lacking), not for he-said she-said bickering.

Re: 'declares systematic poisoning/antidoting legitimate gameplay, neglects to provide adequate defence mechanisms against such gameplay'

Is antidoting not an adequate counterpart to poisoning? The problem with introducing even more features to preemptively "defend" against other players' actions is that they often facilitate an entirely new form of gameplay some might consider griefing as well. That being said, if you have any particular ideas for features that would better support emergent gameplay, we'd be excited to hear about them in the Ideas forum.
Posted 12 months ago by Blanky Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Liza: Reading through this thread now, I just assumed they were all "flask." It always made sense!

@Holgate: One would assume that an adequate remedy to a single player systematically poisoning certain trees would be a whole group to replace the trees the afore mentioned single player killed.
