Are you playing differently?

I think I am.

I'm taking a lot more time to notice details in this brave new world, especially some of the fun quest text that I barely skimmed last time 'round.

And I'm hanging out in some of the questy areas longer, like the Eesti Life Catalogue, etc

I thought I'd madly rush to buy a house, etc, but now, it seems, I'm enjoying a slower pace.

And you?

  • I'm following the skill tree differently, and not in such a hurry.  Knowing that THIS IS REALLY IT has made me more patient and thoughtful, I think.

  • I'm not entirely sure how I will play now that the reset has happened. Like most others, I'm trying to gather currants and such, and I did buy a house as soon as I could yesterday (apartment), but I'm not really strategizing or anything. I'm trying to find ways other than mining to get money (for most of my glitchy life that's all I've done for money), but it's difficult to find things that take the same amount of time and are as profitable, haha. For some reason, I've been going towards skill-learning of Better Learning and Teleportation instead of mining/cooking/gardening, etc. I guess I miss TPing way too much XD So when everyone is amazing miners but has to walk everywhere, I'll be poor and skilless but I can go wherever I want! Muahaha!

I think I might play more relaxed, which is what I was doing in the last few tests before the reset. Honestly... my only goal is to get a full set of cubimals again. xD Hehe. So I'm working towards that!

  • Wrendolin and Pallas: I think I'm just the opposite. Before the reset I took time to take the whole world in, but this time I've been very goal oriented, trying to do as many quests in as little time as possible, buying a house much earlier than I did last time, etc.  And I've totally done the skill tree differently (AK/RHK and BL/Tp are my goals this time through).

Interestingly enough, I'm still broke and hungry most of the time I'm playing. ...Some things never change.

  • Definitely being selective about what I learn in the Skill Tree. The fact that they don't tell you that Skill Times increase with the more Skills you learn is a definite downer the first time you realize it.

  • I've skipped right past the 'basic' hoe and invested in a High Class Hoe.  Same with the Fancy Pick.

Decided against the Super-duper watering can (err, irrigator 9000) as my old lil watering can always served me well and never really broke despite copious gardening and tree waterering.

Also jumping in with bigger bags from the start.

Now that I have a little cave house again I'm content to just mellow about and read stories to my trees.

  • I'm focussing on getting Mining IV started before end of test. SO far I'm on target for that. I did rush to get a cheap apartment, just some place to call home until I'm about lvl 20 probably when I'll be happy to save up to get my 50k place back. However now I'm wondering if it was worth it as I won't really NEED a home to dump stuff in until about lvl 15. ah well it's only a 1.5k apartment no biggie.
Not worrying about cooking just yet. Have done some basic skills but leaving the quests until I can afford kitchen tools and ingrediants.
Until then it's just exploring and mining mostly.
I remembered when I started last time not realising there were areas outside of Groddle Forest and trying to complete all the streets in that area. So I decided I would do that again and now have my Groddle Forest Completest Badge.

  • whatever strategy i had about mining and things kinda went out the window when i learned (once again) how painful +3 cherries/gas/bubbles from trees are when you're used to a world of 24+super harvests+goodies

powered to enough mining/tinkering to start making money and buy a few bags, now i'm spreading out the skills and creating a balanced character.

  • Another thread made me think about this- are you playing 'for real' this time?

    Because 'it counts' now?

Because you want to get enough of a head start before the doors are flung open to one-and-all?
Posted 15 months ago by Wrendolin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Is it just me or do other people find that jumping quest a little too frustrating for something that comes early in the game?   I finished it this time (after a lot of failed attempts) but last time I just left the quest until almost the end (before the reset).   At least you get free spinach.  I waited until my energy was really low,  then I went back for the free spinach. :)

  • Personaly I think the jumping quest is quite fun and I didn't have any problems with it.

  • I don't really see the point of worrying too much about a "head start".  Unless you are going to play ALL THE TIME forever after, there will always be new people joining with more time to waste.  I imagine they could catch up.    It would be boring if the community was so stratified that the beta  testers and early players were always ahead.  It would be great if someone who started playing next year had the chance to jump to the top of the leaderboard  in some category.

  • I think I'm going to buy a house this time.

I played the entire alpha homeless, content to roam the lands like a gypsy.

Finally having a house would add a new dimension for  me.

  • I took it pretty slow to start with, so I've been a bit quicker this time. At least I've been quicker about getting a house and doing my skill tree differently. I've been spending more time mining as well, than I did originally, so I can get some gems to donate. I didn't think about donating (or understood the value of it so much) when I played the first time around.

  • I've bought a house much earlier this time. And finally relocated from Groddle Forest (served me well until the mid-30's) to the Meadow, I needed the bigger storage spaces but couldn't be bothered to move.

I'm also focussing more on particular skills, because I know which ones I used most - all the cooking, animal and harvesting ones. Once those are done I'll focus on teleportation, if not earlier - I didn't remember how bad walking everywhere was!!

I'm ignoring mining/alchemy/everythingelse for now - this is something different, since last time I focussed purely on mining when I was starting out and ignored everything else, then discovered how bad the energy usage was! (And also how boring I found it, for me cooking is a much more interesting way to make money!)

  • I'm so caught up in how short the skills are, starting over, when you feed the shrines, that I hate to leave the game for long. The first time thru I didn't know about the shrines helping till later on.
Posted 15 months ago by gimmegames Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm staying pretty focused this time around. Last time, I was all over the place with no real game plan. But I'm taking into account places I ignored last time through, like actual places (travelling a LOT) and working on specific achievement branches rather than quests (I've only been finishing the quests as they come along because levels=more energy, though that's starting to become less of an issue). I want to master the things I'm working on before moving on to something else.

  • I meant to take it easy, but then I went on a mad dash to prove I could be one of the first to get my 50k mansion without doing any mining.  (Totally worked, by the way!)

  • @larky lion: how did you make your money? Cooking? Harvesting?
Posted 15 months ago by magic panda Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I played harder and was more focused than I've ever been in the past.
Like larky lion, I wanted my big house back (also without mining, because I hate mining and didn't want to learn it).
    *high 5 larky lion* :D
I wasn't too concerned about being first back in a big house, I just wanted to be the first back in my old house, as nowhere else would have been 'home' lol :)
I didn't care about achievement badges, levels, or anything. All I wanted was currants, currants and more currants until I got my house, my gnome and Hugh Jackman and George Clooney (piggies) back.
Once I got them, things just felt right again.
I did have to stay up 'till 3am (my time) each night, but what's a little sleep deprivation when there's currants to be made lol :D
I didn't really stop and smell the roses much. I did spend a little more time in the more unusual areas, like the fire fly whistle place and the hairball quest place, as I wanted to remember them, but the rest of it was a beautiful sleep deprived blur :D

  • I just queued up the skills and enjoyed the quests as they came. Helped a friend get into the game and get his first house. Basically helped others out as much as I could... Hmm. Other than a better understanding of the skill system and locations, I think I pretty much played like I was just before the reset.

  • This test -- yes. It was all about leveling and currants.

Next time - no. I will need to get more money because I'm about broke, but I won't be in a frantic clock chase to get money. I won't have to deal with crazy traffic in the mines. It was insane down there.

I am looking forward to a much more enjoyable path forward and a return to a more relaxed, less frenetic pace.

  • I had a lot of trouble with a few things before the rest:

-the rook egg quest had me befuddled with more than a dozen attempts - this time I got it on the first shot because I knew where I could jump

-I didn't understand I should have always kept the rock learning skills last time around, this time I kept him going and am now almost at 31 skills and I was able to prioritize which skills since I really knew which ones I wanted or needed to know

-last time I died a lot because I didn't know how to cook and I didn't watch my energy level enough etc., I have yet to go to Hell since the reset :-)

-I knew about the realty listings this time and used it to my advantage and found a good deal (a house just as large as some other for cheaper in a good location), last time I just found a house for sale and purchased it without looking for a good location etc.

-I am asking more players for help than I did last time - when I first started playing, I was too nervous to ask a "stranger" to help me dig, now I just announce it on the street where I am :-)

-I find mining boring, but last time I did it at level 1 and 2 and this time I didn't until I hit level 2 because it takes less time and I've hardly even done it much, I'm going to wait until I'm level 3 or 4 so it doesn't take as long and I'll pet piggies until then.

    - I've achieved and spent one emblem, last time people gave them to me, I think it will be more fun having to earn my own this time around and even more fun to give new ones to others as I make them, last time no one really needed them, but I imagine there will always be low level glitches who need emblems after the launch

-Also, I could wait on quests until I had other items or skills that would help me achieve it... like meditating in the cold place with some hearty groddle sammiches to munch on while I was there

So, yes, I'd say my playing is drastically different, but I'm still having a lot of fun!!  Even more so since I feel like I really have the hang of it!!  :-D

  • I did a lot more of the quests and stayed on top of those far more than I did the first time. I already had a house picked out, so I got just enough money to get it and drop my spare stuff, though I don't know that I needed to hurry since I'm still the only person living on my block. A lot of the extraneous things that fascinated me last time- like Cubimals, for example- are on hold, because I've got lots of things to do, and lots of time to get and play with toys. I'm also cooking for the first time- I didn't remotely bother last time; part of it was because I knew it wouldn't matter what skills I had in the end, and partly because I was busy following other paths (mostly mining). Now that I've realized that spending hours and hours mining nonstop is really, really boring, I'm trying different things.

  • -Did all the level 1 required skills, then focused entirely on Basic Learning 1,2,3,4 and 5 (4 learning now). Previously, I was all about doing the fastest skill first, regardless of what it was

-Went light on the bags (bought the 1 small bag to complete the quest) and sold EVERYTHING I got in order to save up for a 15k home in Meadows (5 patches, 16 pots, 32 slot cabinet) near IX.

-Started giving to people before i gave to shrines where as before I focused on that first emblem before all else.

-Hardly ever mined anything this time and still made plenty from petting and Baqala (amazing how much you can make once you have Gardening II and Soil Appreciation II).

  • I wanted to spend more time and take it all in -- and I *did*... but I also felt myself get a little competitive. I wanted to level up and up and up. I tried to keep it in check and remind myself that there is no race....

Last time I lived first in GMeadow and then in Alakol. I loved them both. This time I'm in GForest (a place I didn't spend much time in at all last time) -- wow, I love it there! And I love my little tree house.

While I loved my Alakol house (and neighbors -- best neighbors!!) -- I don't think I'll buy there again. Or not for a long time. I would love to buy a house in every area. I'm looking forward to living in the firebogs (even tho I'm not that interested in the FB skillset and I prefer mining).

One more thing: this time I would love to work on projects. I never did before. :) So I'm looking forward to that.

    (oh and PS: BETTER LEARNING)

  • I sold everything as I acquired it last time I played so I could get a house, this time I'm saving stuff I want (like music blocks) and I'm much more relaxed about the home purchase.  (The home I'm in now is temporary until I can get a huge one in Alakol which is the same thing I did before the reset.)

  • @emdot - I *love* the idea of living in every area before really settling down!  I've always thought it would be cool to be able to have more than one house, but I think your idea is much cooler!!

This time i did kinda rush to buy back my house... I wanted the same one. I loved the location and the actual home.
I also took the time to really look at what skills to learn when. Last time I just learned randomly and choose the next one only based on what was quickest.

  • I would say that I was pretty focused on buying a house first.  I had scoped out the style of house I liked in Shimla on Lowland, and there were only three available.  I really wanted to move from the same style in Chakra back to Shimla, so I made it a priority for the reset.  I was super excited to see that they had dropped the prices of the stand alone firebogs too.  Made it even easier for me to get the one I wanted.

I think I've really focused my skills too...not learning too many skills that I won't use much...not trying to learn the entire skill tree...just want I want to do.

Making it a point to not buy everything right way, and only make purchases as I need them.  Now that I have my house...I figure I can become a bit less fiscally strict with myself.  Also, not feeling under the gun to do the quests right away...at first they come at you pretty quick...so, I really tried to pace them out.

Now, looking forward to wandering the lands, scraping barnies, singing to fireflies, and eventually getting a crytalmaltizing chamber (sadly, haven't seen Rube yet to try to trade for one).  In the mean time, I'll just dig for peat and scoup jellies...eventually the projects will want them as people get back to doing them.

  • Definitely playing differently.  Bought a regular bag.. bought a shabby little apt far away from the madding crowd (but near the Ancestral Lands) where I can dump piles of stuff.  Focusing on the BL skills as much as possible and only taking on necessary learning of lower level skills if I have to.  Want to get the overall advantage of BL5.  Would have spent my first emblem of Lem tonight if the game had stayed open..  Oh well :)  Can't wait for Monday!

EDIT.. My plan does include incremental upgrades to my living arrangements until I get my 50k house, of course.. LOL

Posted 15 months ago by Fokian Fool Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Definitely different for me; I immediately set off to maximize growth so I could purchase the house I wanted as quickly as possible (I was aiming for a specific unit). Now that I finished off that, I'm probably going to take a more relaxed pace and work towards another goal: A full cubimal collection!
Posted 15 months ago by Aoi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • After the reset I have definitely taken a new stance on how I play. I don't want to buy a house (yet, anyways.), and I don't really want to purchase many bags, if any. Pre-Reset I found myself annoyed constantly re-organizing my eleventeen-billion bags. I decided if I can't neatly hold my gear, I'm better off giving it away.

I wanted to form a massive army of cubimals before the reset, but I reached the point where I was giving them all away. It's a good ice breaker.

I feel like less of a dead weight helping out others more often.

  • I'm playing pretty much the same, if a little bit more focused. I've just been exploring while I build my kinship, learning, and gardening skills to support my travels. I grabbed the basic cooking skills early too to have something to make my meat into to both donate and eat.

I managed to grab the emblems of Lem and Mab on my way through. I left BL IV going through the little break, though it's already about half done unfortunately. Really wish I could've gotten five going. If only we didn't have responsibilities during the week. :)

  • I've noticed people are getting more serious now about getting currants now, myself included.

The downside is I noticed a bit more drama in Ajaya bliss with group mining when people were 'jumping too much' or the rock was running out too fast and not respawning. Same things IRL - scarce resources start conflict. It's sad cuz it's very un-glitchy.

  • I'm choosing skills differently. Pushing to get teleportation done so I can get around easily to my favorite places. I'd like to jump at an apartment but may hold out for a home in Akohol which I never bought in the old version. The fact I know where to go and how to get what I want in the game makes a difference but other then the above I don't think I can say I am playing that differently.

  • Last time I went through the skill tree getting all the basic skills first, before going on to the next level. My glitch had a very healthy diet, as I progressed through the cooking and gardening skills and tried all the recipes. I waited until I could afford the house I wanted, and moved to an oriental styled house in the meadows and was thoroughly traumatised when I came back after the game had been closed to find all my poor piggies had died of starvation while I was away.

I remember being surprised when I realised that some people had calculated which foods were most economical and were force feeding their poor little glitches on the same stuff day after day while they rushed through the game racking up xp, currants and quests at breakneck speed. Then I pondered on life, the universe, and everything and how different we all are.

This time around I decided to be more tactical. Buy a small cheap house early on,  get the bare minimum of basic skills, them make sure to clock up all the better learnings in the first 20 skills, followed by a mixed combo of mining, teleportation and animal kinship before going back to fill out the other basic skills

It's horrid. My poor glitch survives on raw meat and stacks of raw cabbage because I begrudge the energy needed to gather and cook a varied diet. It's a wonder we don't have all of the caverns to ourself, what with the noxious effect that diet must be having on the poor wee things bowels. Good job the new treehouse is open plan, with plenty of ventilation between the planks.

Instead of pottering around exploring and interacting with every blue glowing object I have been only stopping to pet and nibble pigs, mine rocks or wander the ancestral lands hoping for loads of goodies. I've got loads more currants already, but I'm not enjoying it anywhere near as much. Part of me wants to go back to learning the simple skills, and getting more enjoyment, and another part insists I have to wait and get skills that take longer first so the time penalty is less depressing. Bah. Why do skills take longer to learn after the first 20? I reckon it's the other way round in real life, the more you learn the easier it is.

  • I've tried to die at about 11pm each game day and I had every intention of doing all the Better Learning skills first (didn't even notice them before reset)... but once again I got sucked in by all the 10 mins, 30 mins etc ones so I could DO MORE STUFF.. w00t !  I have BL IV running now though!

I tried to level up as much as I could which I mainly did by visiting as many locations as I could, and buying one of each thing from the vendors and making one of each new thing I could given my skills.  I've also saved up for bigger bags and not bought normal bags.

I have next to no currants but I don't care.  I've also not worried so much about cooking fancy stuff and just lived off meat, eggs and butterfly milk.

  • +1 Oiorpata: I think it's silly to have a penalty on skills, too, and I've been trying to be "good" this round and learn the longer ones first, when what I really want to do is just level up on Animal Kinship!  It'll all come out in the wash once I've learned them all, but all the same, it is a different experience for sure.

  • So interesting to see how differently everyone approaches the game. And fun, too. I do feel like a big outlier, tho. I don't really see that it's such a big deal that some skills take a long time. I mean the longest of them take like what, a week?

Patience, young grasshoppers. You can jump to your house very quickly, as this thread demonstrates. Taking a day or two to learn a skill, priceless.
