Should I continue to get energy tanks?

Now that the mood percent decrease is capped at 2000 (or rather, at 2000 mood and above, the percent reduction is measured as if your total mood was 2000), is there any reason not to continue to increase my energy tanks since I was already well above 2000?  In my opinion, it sounds like anyone that already has more than 2000 energy might as well continue to increase there tank capacity a bit if they would benefit from more energy.  Or am I missing some key point that would still make energy tank increases a bad idea?  Thoughts?

  • If you are going for Teleporting achievements, then a larger energy tank will cost you more energy per teleport.

  • Another thing that was changed at the same time is that energy upgrades now get increasingly more expensive as your tank gets larger, so it may be cost prohibitive at some point. Otherwise, I don't see any reason not to make it as big as you like.

  • @Shepherdmoon - I think it starts scaling at 3000 energy and above, so I could still get another 200 before I'd have to worry about increased iMG cost :) *Edit* Rereading Stoots comment, I think the cost of increasing energy only goes increases incrementally past 3000, but now I'm second guessing myself @_@

@TomC - I had forgotten to take teleportation into account.  Something I'll have to consider.

  • I like having a large energy tank, because it basically means I can do whatever I want and not worry about running out of energy. That said, I'm only happy now that we have the "mood loser" upgrade cards.

  • Stoot vaguely pointed to more changes that would effect these mechanics coming soon. I'm not sure if this points to buy all you can now in case it becomes impossible/more difficult in the future (as in the case of coin cards and energy tanks where the cost went up and if you bought early you saved money or had a large advantage for a time) or if it points to holding off in case the changes are detrimental to a larger tank and you can't go back.

  • The only negative factors for buying energy are time spent playing and teleports.  you lose 32% per hour and 10% per teleport, so if on a typical game day that totals more than 100% then you might be worse off with more energy.

However, there are a number of factors that make higher energy pools worth it.  You can look at my (now outdated) series of posts explaining all the factors here:  http://mathemaglitch.blogspot.ca/p/maximum-energy.html

Notable things that these posts don't explore include:
More energy now helps with mood instead of hurting
Get out of Hell Free cards are capped at 9999 energy

    But the short version is:
The effectiveness of most things that let you benefit from a higher energy pool are capped somewhere either directly or indirectly.  For example, when you crash from no-no powder you have a full tank to spend, but if you can't spend it all before you die then a larger tank doesn't give you more energy.

Because of the mood changes I'm probably going to around 3000, but I would rather hold imagination and decide when things are a little more finalized than up my tank right now.

  • Larger energy tanks are better, I think, despite the greater teleport cost and total loss per hour, because they can be filled up higher through the following actions: taking a trip to the ancestral lands and running around until the quions fill up your tank, new day, and buying another energy upgrade card. (Did I miss something? Maybe leveling up? I haven't done that since imagination came, so don't know.) Those actions will give you more total energy if your energy tank is higher, which I think more than offsets the other increased losses.

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the greater teleport cost only seems higher. The absolute number increases, but it's always 10% of your maximum energy. So the teleport cost doesn't actually change, it just seems like it does.

  • Shepherdmoon: Yes leveling up refills you also get out of hell free cards and making the crab happy

  • Flowery Pott: The number going up is actually changing.  If you have 1000 energy and you teleport you need to eat 10 meats to get the energy back.  If you have 2000 energy then you'll need 20 meats to get the energy back.  That's a real difference, and a reason to consider how high you want to make your maximum energy.

My analysis of energy tanks does not include buying upgrade cards as a way of refilling your tank, though I suppose it is quite relevant and I probably should consider it.  I'd need to see the actual cost of those cards, though.
