Pro Tips for Newbies and Pros alike

Allright, I searched for Pro Tips on the forums, didn't found a useful  thread so there you go: share your Pro tipsies and make life easier of your fellow Glitches.

Ill start with three tips, 2 I gathered from the forum:

Pro Tips:

1: Use spinach as a fast walking booster (especially in the ancestral area). Don't jump with it, you might lose traps doing so.

2: Pro-tip: that little arrow? When you have a destination set, clicking on it will auto-navigate your Glitch to the next signpost (and clicking on it when next to a post with many signs will automatically choose the right one). Posted 3 days ago by stoot barfield

3: PRO TIP: if you have tons of one thing you can put them all "on top of each other" on the floor. For instance - 1,000 beans? You can drop them all in one place, making it look like there is only one group of beans there. Do that for each group... you'll be able to keep your floor nice and tidy.

  • Learn your Better Learning 5 overnight. Since it doesn't add a penalty to skill times (i don't think), you can learn it whilst you sleep, and then learn shorter things during the day. That way you aren't waiting 5, 6, 7 days without any new skills.

  • La_La - how long are we talking for BL V? i got mine in before brain decay and it still took me over 4 days on paper, maybe a third off for all my donations. overnight didn't work for me. that said, the concept is good, longer skills overnight, and, unless you are an efficiency obsessed person, shorter skills during the day, so you don't find yourself waking up at 3 am just to start a new skill...

also, dunno if this is really a pro tip (what is a 'pro tip'..?), but: donating is fine and dandy, but check what time it makes your skill end. if you donate to the max but it still ends at 3 am and you don't wake up until 8, you could have saved 5 hours' worth of donates for the best giant for your next skill (or at least not stressed yourself so much with the bother of obtaining them).

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes.  I have done this so often.

  • Found out all 3 of OP out by myself but they are extremely helpful for anyone that doesn't know!

As for BLV, La_La means that every night when you go to sleep, switch out the skills you were learning during the day with BLV, no matter when you wake up or if you don't get a chance to get on until the evening, you don't lose any time, since BLV is such a long skill to learn.

  • All good tips above (I always keep a nice stock of spinach on hand...I call it the cheap person's teleport ;) For those who don't know, you can buy it at a Produce vendor.

Here's my list of tips: http://www.glitch.com/forum/general/9184/ Mostly regarding one way to learn skills that will help you if you just want to learn them all quickly.

  • > but: donating is fine and dandy, but check what time it makes your skill end.

Use the Greasemonkey script instead, to queue skills, so if something ends in the middle of the night, you can just start a new skill automatically. NB: For the Greasemonkey script to work properly, you need to leave your computer on overnight and keep glitch.com (not the skills page) open in your browser. I've messed that up before, so thought I'd throw that in there. ;)

  • Thanks for this. :) Lots of good info.
Posted 14 months ago by Wynella Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Greasemonkey script means having to keep your browser and computer on overnight, so it's not really that great.

Now if it ran on my phone, dohoho.
Is it worth buying spinach from the produce? I've taken to just making it myself.

  • Don't forget to hug your bear every day.
And consider, caress & contemplate any emblems you have.

And don't underestimate the power of raw meat and eggs if you need energy & your cooking skills aren't top-notch yet.

  • In addition to Pro Tip 2, by clicking the navigation arrow to go into "autopilot" you can begin  moving while still performing actions that normally "freeze" you, such as nibbling a pig, havesting, or even mining! It is unknown whether this is intentional or not, but I'd guess not. So abuse this before they eventually fix it.

  • I saw this tip a while back and it works great for me. If you find your elements being destroyed when crushing chunks due to lack of storage space, donate the ones you get too many of. Giants LOVE getting 5000+ red elements. I love changing otherwise wasted elements into favor.
Posted 14 months ago by Aleph Zero Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yeah, when crushing have an extra element pouch on hand to catch your overflow elements for that tip.

  • PROTIP: If you want lots of money, keep selling expensive items to the vendors.

PROTIP: When you run outof inventory space, buy a bigger bag for more room.

  • @Bluigi @Mackenzie: I'm quite oblivious about any greasemonkey scripts so great point!  (Reason being I switch between 3 OSes on 3 computers, of which two aren't mine anyway).

    @Mackenzie: I liked your other thread :)

  • Oh, and @Bluigi, if you donate and then switch skills, you (EDIT: may possibly) cancel your donations.  I guess it depends if you donate more or play with skills more.  I have work during the day so donating is far more useful than constantly having to switch skills, but La_La's suggestion makes great sense if you'd rather have the skills to play with at that very moment.

    EDIT:
On second thought, if you learn too many skills before finishing BL V, you might push BL V itself over the too-many-skills-learnt limit and actually make it longer to learn BL V all the while not benefiting from the skill-reducing effect of actually having learnt BL V completely and thus taking longer to learn your 'shorter' skills too.  I guess it depends how much calculation about it you really want to do. :P Most people won't care about it that much.

  • PRO TIP: If you have the extra currents, you can save some subway riding time by just walking between Groddle Forrest Meadow and Eastern Approach. They are practically right next to each other and you can skip Chakra Phool, Jethimadh, and Shimla Mirch.

PRO TIP: Set a teleport point in Koulato Cluster in Jethimadh, this gives you easy access to Jethimadh, Chakra Phool, Kalavana, and Shimla Mirch. But there is also a one-way portal hidden here that leads to Ruta Asuncion in IX, this gives you easy access to Ix, Groddle Forest, Groddle Meadow, Uralia, and Ilmenskie Caverns. To use the portal go behind the pillar closest to the street sign and press up to climb a hidden ladder, once you stop climbing jump to the right, you will then be sent to Ruta Asuncion. It is a very handy teleport location.

  • The way donating and skill switching works is odd, I don't believe you cancel it, but if you reach the maximum of 50% off, you have trouble when changing back your skill. The amount of time taken off never goes away when switching or back (that is when you're in 'Fast! Fast!' mode), or so this is what I've read from devs and in threads by people who say they've confirmed it, this could be old news and it could have changed since then, I'm personally not going to take the risk of finding out, so I guess I'll never know for sure.
Posted 14 months ago by Bluigi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Bluigi: For the record, neither have I.  :) I've just gone off what it tells me.  Guess one of us will have to take the plunge someday.  (I'd rather not do it with Teleportation V though, lol.)

  • @Lara @Bluigi - I just donated loads of stuff for learning Teleport 3 and got the super fast learning thing on the skills page (along with 4 hours reduced for learning). Switched to **Mining IV, the super fast learning disappeared and I learn it the usual way. Then switched back to Teleport 3, the super fast kicks in, and I saw I retained my saved hours (just like it was before I switched to the mining skill). Hope this answers your both questions about changing skills / swapping between them.

**Mining IV was on pause when I switched to it (might be different if I the skill was new)

  • @Bbcversus: Thanks! You have saved me caterpillars and musicboxes, and they thank you for it!  I guess the skill notification is wrong, and many newbies and pros will be wiser for it. :)

  • You can click "all 500" or whatever when filling your piggy feeders, instead of trying to calculate the exact amount. The feeder will automagically fill with the right amount!

You can use credits to buy TP tokens.

If you have six of the same thing to donate to a shrine, and you're not using Shrine Powder, donate the things one at a time to increase your chances of scoring a ticket (doesn't work for single bits of grain or beans, but I'm talking Musicblocks and such).

Ways to die quick at the end of the day (for your Dracula badge): make butter/cheese, grind spices/elements, fix tools. But make sure you have enough time to squish your way out fast enough for the New Day, or you'll miss your energy/mood refill!

  • You can put a bag of stuff in one of the spaces of your cabinet. You cannot look inside the bag while it's in the cabinet though, you have to put it in your backpack to interact with the items inside the bag. If I'd learned this earlier the floors in my cottage would have looked much tidier.

Posted 14 months ago by Implet Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I prefer munching hairball herbs to spinach in the ancestral grounds because then I can still make smaller jumps over juju bandits which enables me to still get more blue traps.

Storing bags in your storage cabinet at home will allow you have more storage space.  (10-16 spaces per bag per storage spaces in cabinet.)
Posted 14 months ago by Reba Subscriber! | Permalink
  • what do you buy with 1M currants?
Posted 14 months ago by Mr. Dawgg Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Implet - On the Home page (this is the page where you click 'Enter World'), just underneath where it shows your skill learning times, there will be a Skills Queue and an Add button.

@Mr. Dawgg - Save it for a rainy day, or when new, more expensive houses/items are out, whichever comes first.  Also, buying stuff on auctions, being nice to newbies and generally having a good time.  Money does not make a happy man, but it sure as heck makes things ALOT easier.

  • * Use the greesemonkey script to figure out the achievements you can obtain without too much effort for quick favor and xp boosts

    * Remember to jump all the time if you ever hope to get your leapist badges

    * For long skills, invest early on in a few emblems of the primary god. The increased favor cap will help you learn the five day skills all that much quicker. I'm currently learning BL5 and am planning on learning Mining5 next. Every day, after I've capped and spent my favor with Lem, I find Zille's shrine and donate till I hit my xp cap. By the time I'm done with BL5 I'll have a stockpile of Zille emblems to spend on Mining, plus I'll have an increased favor cap to boot.

    * Name your bags and keep them organized. It makes life much easier.

    * Meditate while using kitchen tools

  • I'm not sure this is really a pro-tip, but it's a fun thing to know for new players who like to collect:

Collecting musicboxes gets you trophies for your house, and clicking on those trophies will allow you to play any of the songs in that trophy's collection. There are 5 music trophies, 5 songs in each collection and 5 display slots in your trophy case, which basically gives you a stereo system with 25 songs when you're done.

Also, if you play a song for a Crab, he'll put some temporary headphones in your inventory while he listens to it (they dissolve when the song ends); by dropping the headphones and then picking them up after the song finishes, they become permanent. They don't do anything, but they make a nice decoration when dropped next to your new Musicbox stereo. =)

  • Newbie tip -
If your greeter hasn't told you already, always go to Live Help if you ever have a question! There are some really nice people there that are happy to help anyone :)

    Pro tip -
If you have a spare item, donate it instead of selling it for a bigger profit. After you've donated, speed up on skills that craft things. After that, use those skills to mass produce things to make an even bigger profit than it would if you just sold it!

  • I like to blend 20 'Earthshakers' and then bring them out with me mining. Drinking these (one at a time) will give you a full hour of energy neutral mining via the 3 minute 'Impervious Miner' buff. You'll also get +30 energy, +10 mood and +7xp but that's are just a bonus.

Sure there's prep time/work involved but it makes mining so much more enjoyable than constantly having to replenish your energy as you go.

  • For grinding:

    1.  Get the 2k grinder.
    2.  Prepare / Buy a flaming humbaba drink (allows you to grind without using energy).
    3.  Make sure to have one completely empty elements bag in your inventory.
    4.  Drink the flaming humbaba - grind up to 750 ore at once.

No-No Powder and Cooking (or any other task):
    http://www.glitch-strategy.com/wiki/No-no
Best to read the wiki for correct use of No-No Powder.  When I have enough ingredients for several stacks of Awesome Soup or want to use a lot of energy (like repairing my 2k grinder), I use No-No.

After discovering Humbaba and No-No, I haven't had to scrounge for Awesome Soup.

  • Pming, how do you crush up to 750 ore with 1 flaming humbaba.  I can barely get 200 done in the short time the buff lasts...?
Posted 14 months ago by Friend Subscriber! | Permalink
  • As long as you start grinding while the buff is active you won't use any energy. You can only grind ONE TYPE of ore per flaming humbaba. He was saying that the Grand Ol Grinder can grind up to 750 chunks at once if it is A) All the same type of ore, and B) fully repaired to 100% before starting. To grind stacks larger than 50, click on the grinder and select crush, instead of clicking on the chunks.
