[Bug][Exploiting] or [Good Teamwork!]

Out of Curiosity: For players of GoC, is it a bug, or against the rules (exploiting), to organize passing of the crown to get each player the maximum amount of time with it in order to work towards badges? Or is this just a matter of good teamwork and good job?

  • It can't be a bug, because there is no unintended behavior in the passing of the crown between players.

Whether it is an exploit or a valid way to get badges is your own opinion. I personally do not participate in that kind of thing, have no trouble getting the GoC badges legitimately, and enjoy the competitive, skill-based nature of GoC. Since no other part of the game requires any kind of ability or talent, it's nice to have one mini-game that is based on that, and one could argue that getting seconds and wins by cooperatively passing the crown takes away from the legitimacy of the badges. On the other hand, there's the question of whether we should exclude players from badges if they are not physically capable of participating in an aspect of the game. The top-tier badge, after all, requires having the crown for over 27 hours. My opinion is that, if you want to get your friends to sit in GoC with you for 27 hours while you hold the crown, you at least deserve a badge for having really patient friends.

Actually, this potential exploit is probably comparable to ways that I have achieved some of my badges. For example, I got the tree antidoting badges all in one day by poisoning my backyard trees (which incurs no mood penalty or cooldown time, since they are mine) and healing them over and over. The badges were probably intended to be achieved over time through spontaneously encountering trees in the wild that other people had poisoned, and healing them. However, I don't think most people would argue that it was wrong or an exploit to get the badges by poisoning and healing my own trees over and over. Like those who cooperatively pass the crown to get badges as opposed to playing the game, I put in the time and currants to get the badges - however, one could say I did not achieve them naturally or in the intended way.

In any case, Tiny Speck probably has better things to do than debate whether or not it's an exploit to idle in a mini-game to get badges, especially since virtually no one is known to have the top-tier GoC badges yet anyway.

  • I'm not debating morality of it, I have my own opinion on that. It was a question to TinySpeck that doesn't even need to be debated. A one sentence "We don't care if you do this" or "We do care, don't do it" is all we need. If you want to debate morality of it this is not the thread, but you are more than welcome to do it all you want in another one.

I put it in this forum because I wanted to see a simple answer so that people know if it is acceptable or not, no more.

  • I think it's a clever way to get the badges, involving the teamwork that TS seems to want to foster. :) If they don't want to let it continue, they'll change the code so's you can't. Not sure how they'd do it in this situation, but they're smarter than I... I'd take any silence as your requested "We don't care if you do this," or at least "Oho! Clever you, go on... but maybe we'll make some changes... soon."

I also agree with Effigy here: if you want to get your friends to sit in GoC with you for 27 hours while you hold the crown, you at least deserve a badge for having really patient friends.

  • Don't worry about it Effigy.  there will always be party POOpers.  I congratulate your group of friends on getting (or cooperating to get) the Badges!

  • Update: I asked staff about this directly via bug report, and they said that turn-taking is a-okay.
