Live Q&A Sessions Tomorrow, Jan. 20

So you wanted a chance to shout out all your burning questions regarding Glitch, Ur, the future, and possibly even the secret lives of batterflies? Well tomorrow we're going to have not one, but two live Q&A sessions in the game with none other than His Stootness.

We thought about using a specialized site for this, but it felt more 'right' to do it in-game. So with a bit of brainstorming and a dab of elbow grease, we came up with a plan.

When they will happen:
Session #1 – 12 pm to 12:45 pm PST
Session #2 – 5 pm to 5:45 pm PST

How you can tune in:
I created two Groups just for this purpose, so you can tune into the chat sessions from anywhere in Ur without the threat of lag bogging you down. The first is The Questions Channel, where you can ask questions to your heart's content, and the second is The Answers Channel, where you can get stoot's response to selected questions. Only staff will be able to post in Answers to ensure that everyone gets a chance to see the response, but we'll summarize the question being answered beforehand so it's easy to follow along.

Join the groups, open up the chat when it's time, and you should be good to go. I'll be there to make sure everything goes smoothly, and will post a recap of the answers right here for anyone who isn't able to make it.

Hope to see you there!

  • Will someone be able to post the chat log for those of us who will be at work during that whole time? :)
Posted 11 months ago by Kookaburra Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Ah, it looks like people who've maxed out on groups will need an invite (for now, maaaaybe we can find a way around it), so just bug me here if you need one and I'll send them as soon as I can.

Kookaburra, I'll be posting everything from Answers here after they're all done.

  • Good news! The join settings should be all fixed now, so no invites will be needed no matter how many groups you're already in. \o/

  • Pirate Apples, no one can view the Message Board, as it'll all happen in the Group Chats in-game at the times mentioned above.
Posted 11 months ago by Blanky Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Ah... gotcha Blanky!  Thanks for the clarification!
Posted 11 months ago by Pirate Apples Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Since this occurs while I am supposed to be working, and since I have a strict "no glitch at work" policy, can full chat transcripts be posted into the forums once they are complete?

ETA - I see you said you will.  Thanks.

From OP: Join the groups, open up the chat when it's time, and you should be good to go. I'll be there to make sure everything goes smoothly, and will post a recap of the answers right here for anyone who isn't able to make it.

Not sure if I can make it either, so I hope they're posted fast. (Though I say the fansites will be doing a live feed).

  • As a global community, wouldn't it  be friendlier to quote the times in UTC, or at least as well as your local time of PST? Most people know their own time in relation to UTC/GMT.

  • Will left over questions from the first session be answered in the second or would we need to ask them again?
Posted 11 months ago by FormerlyClayr Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I really get the feeling that something or someone is pressuring him to have these sessions.  "You'll see", "Just wait", "In the future" and "we haven't decided", while honest, is not worthwhile.

I also don't see why the development process has to be so secretive.  It's not like there's easily replicated intellectual property at stake.  The whole "how housing quarters will work" thing could be vetted to the player community, probably to their advantage.

How about this question, Stoot - why don't you do more and better crowdsourcing of your game design with your most committed users?
Posted 11 months ago by WalruZ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • WalruZ - I respectfully disagree. It seemed to me like Stoot was just being honest when he didn't know an answer.

Tiny Speck does amazing design work and I think that trying to crowdsource too much would dilute their product. Consumers of any given product are generally not the best designers of said product, whether that is a game, a website, or a hand-held drill, and designing by committee can turn a great idea into a nightmare.  Frankly, I think TS is doing a commendable job asking for feedback and incorporating changes as needed.

  • "I really get the feeling that something or someone is pressuring him to have these sessions."

I don't think that is it at all; I think they are just testing out the ingame Q&A possibilities for use with separate channels.

If there were not a lot of useful answers that we hadn't seen before it might have been because people didn't think through their questions before asking.  Some of the questions that did get useful answers seemed to have been questions that  had more thought put into them.

  • +1 Knitomaton.   Crowdsourcing suggestions always make me think of that Komar & Melamid work -- an extensive international poll of art preferences that showed that if you go by numbers, what the world overwhelmingly thinks they want in an "ideal painting" is a realistic landscape, lots of blue, with people, water, and animals - about the most generic picture there is.  :)  I really like the specificity of this game and the design and concept teams behind it, and I'd rather not see their process sped up by opening the doors to, um, us.  (Also, I'm not sure what WalruZ meant by crowdsourcing the game design, but I surmise the wait time here is more about coding and algorithms than general gameplay ideas - which 'committed users' aren't necessarily going to be particularly helpful with.)

  • I'm not sure why I get a message that I can't view the discussions in The Answer Channel group since I am a member. But there is ano thread w/a summary of the answers posted by LX (Thanks so much LX) if anyone else is having trouble viewing the discussions.

  • Knitomaton:  "Consumers of any given product are generally not the best designers of said product, whether that is a game, a website, or a hand-held drill, and designing by committee can turn a great idea into a nightmare."

It is customary, when quoting someone, to use quotation marks and, even more importantly, give credit to the person who originated the quote.
