Integration with Social Networks v go it alone

Got asked about this in the mini qustionnaire at the end of playing yesterday. I felt I needed some space to explain my thinking so am posting here. I would prefer go it alone. For me my social network space is more about people I already know through one reason or another. I might be considered a bit odd in that I keep two profiles one for work and one for personal contacts.

For me the ideal would be that Glitch had a good social network. As there are to be group quests I think this will be quite important. Through this I might make new friends who I could also have contact in other social spaces.

However one reason I joined the alpha was that I am looking for a game that my children could play cooperatively in. For me the no fight is an attraction. If there is to be a developed social network system in game and it is intended to be attractive to children then that raises the issue of moderation/reporting of behaviour of various sorts.

  • I like some aspects of tying it to social networks. I'd like the idea of inviting my facebook friends to join and seeing which of my facebook friends are playing a game so I can hook up with them. But I hate it when I have to spam my status in order to let those few friends that are playing a game get some prize or item I found. I also hate when I can't finish something unless I get more friends to be my "neighbors" or whatever and help me with certain items. I'd also hate being restricted to only having my facebook friends be my friends in the game. You should be able to make friends with whoever you want.

I'm also interested in this as a family game that my kids could join in without having a facebook profile. I know my son would love to play farmville but I'm not getting a facebook profile for a 6 year old.

  • go it alone, but make it incredibly easy to invite friends from facebook to play, and for the game to update you status.

the fact that you play a "character" in a unique world makes it too difficult to simply transliterate everything over to a real life social network.

  • Yes, please don't do the, "get 3 more friends to join and you can expand your house" type stuff. That is offensive. I think optionally updating facebook and twitter are fine though, and I would do it sometimes. The silly names in the game make it kinda funny to do that I think. :)
