Subscription and credits

I like the subscriptions - it's a good mix of revenue generation and yet fair to those not buying a subscription since it's not about buying yourself an edge in the game.

So i suppose this question is exploratory more than anything else.

Would it be of value allowing glitches to "earn" teleportation tokens or credits within the game? I realize (particularly given the various grumblings in the forum) it may not be a good idea if this too becomes a competitive race and these become tradeable/auctionable (which they shouldn't be).

Maybe credits should never be allowed except outside of subscription (and yes my greed for teleportation tokens is showing)

Or maybe a skill that let's you have one teleportation token per month?

As i said, it makes sense if the decision is to keep something interesting available only for subscribers, but i figured it's worth putting it out there.

Opinions?

  • No, i don't believe we should be able to get credits/tokens in the game, but only from subscription, and I don't believe that we should HAVE to buy a sub to get credits (alot of people don't like the idea of a monthly fee, but don't mind spending money on 'one offs' like for clothing) Teleportation tokens have always been to me, a convience item, which is a good thing, but should be availible for people to gain in game, which would likely result in loads of grinding, to gain an 'edge'.

I would actually like to see credits be tradable in game, look at EVE, that sorta RMT HELPED the economy, and although it could lead to grinding, for people who just want that 'new helmet' ect. It would provide motivation to log in and start having fun =) (ideally) While also allow lazier players the option to spend real money to get currants for a house, ect. Although people may be against the idea of RMT, currants don't REALLY help players get an 'edge' over others.

  • They seem to sell credits outside of subscription, so that feeds the "I like the game and would like to customize, but don't want monthly payments" sort of supporter (of which I am one).  Teleportation seems like an in-game benefit, which would be problematic in the long term...

  • @Jugni:There is already a limited way to get teleportation tokens in the form of imbued teleportation scripts.  Probably not what you wanted but thought I'd mention it anyways.

  • @Warrender: good point.

And I do like the option of one off credits purchased for customization you really want.

  • The founders have said that they are not going to allow RL money (credits) to be able to be used for in game things except for decorative items like clothing and limited teleports.

As for "earning" stuff in the game: that almost always applies to items which are about advancing in the game, not decorative items. And the reason you can earn them through a lot of time/effort is that the developers want to give you an incentive to buy them. We chose not to go that route because (1) we think people are getting burnt out on it and it's a competitive advantage to not constantly be halting the game to ask for money or for people to pester their friends and (2) once you go down that route, it'd be almost impossible to avoid designing all game mechanics around the "wait 24 hours or pay now" idea and we wanted the game to be different :)

  • @toastman:
You can already buy credits separately from subscriptions, and you can use credits to purchase teleport tokens as well as clothing

  • How much are subscriptions now? I don't see any pricing info now that I'm a subscribed member (I subscribed months ago and haven't wanted to look until now).
