  • There is also a donation box for newbies on the 4th floor of the Farm&Garden Coop tower, in the Very Vegan Cafe.  All donations go to the Community Kitchen group who give away for free the food they cook in their kitchen.

  • I would add, regarding the Community Kitchen, that the Vegan Cafe is the *only* location that has a donation box for the Community Kitchen.

If you see a "donation box" in any other location that claims to be for the Community Kitchen, please be advised that it has been placed without the knowledge of any of the group's admins.

The Vegan Cafe also sells food supplied by the Community Kitchen at market prices in order to raise funds for the Community Kitchen. In addition, some group members sell food from SDBs for 1 currant in a tower room designated as a Community Kitchen.  It is against group policy, however, to have "donation boxes" in such rooms or to sell food for more than 1 currant in these rooms.

UPDATE - To avoid further discussion of the Community Kitchen in the OP's thread, I've created a thread about Community Kitchen Fundraising in the Announcement's forum.

  • ok. but this is not food, this is currants for the newbies.

  • Is this a good thing? Newbies aren't "poor" in the real world sense, they're more like children. Helping newbies with advice and tips is a noble passtime, but just handing them currants and supplies sort of takes the fun out of playing.

  • Giving gifts to new players is something of a Glitch tradition.  I don't know if the Sandbox group still provides the Negative Interest Microloan Service, but this is an example of giving (i.e. loaning) currants to new players to help them get started. Loans and small gifts of currants can make the difference, in some cases, between a player sticking with it vs. quitting the game.

However, it's important to remember that learning how to survive and thrive is part of the fun for many players. Too much giving can deprive them of that.  I like to provide modest gifts of food for new players because I believe the constant need to find food can become tedious. But rather than making lavish gifts, I offer of "cooking lessons" in which I provide ingredients and advice to help a player with cooking skills complete quests, get achievements, and use cooking skills to their best advantage.

  • While many may consider this a noble endeavor, I have to agree with Fritzi & Splendora.  Without the need to buy homes anymore, not sure what the big need is for newbs to have currants given to them by others.  Yes, you need currants to purchase tools and some basic things in game, but after watching a friend play in with the new set up, it seems like they always have plenty of currants, when they need them.  Granted they can't go on crazy cubi buying sprees yet, nor can they afford all the machine parts (but they don't even have the skills for this stuff yet).

I'd like to see more tips for newbs to help them earn their currants instead of handouts (teach a glitch to gather...).
    - For example, do all newbs know that they can play a music block to the crab and get iMG and currants?  Better yet, do they know how to get crabatto juice, and if they drink it before playing the block, their iMG and currants are doubled?
    - Leveling up between 1 and 20, will gain additional currants at each level.
    - Gathering resources, and then selling it to the vendors (preferably the tool vendor) or on auction will also provide currants.  If you can convert that resource into something more advanced, you might get even more currants, depending on the market.

  • is this better?

  • I appreciate you are being so open to constructive suggestions/criticism - Thank You!  I think this has the makings of an even better idea than your first proposal.  It's pretty clear from a couple other threads, that in addition to basic survival classes/assistance, you could also offer some classes about rocks not regenerating unless they are mined to the end (don't tell them how to mine, but just let them know about this nuance), and how to get seeds from piggies for crops and shucking from herbs.  Give them the basic knowledge, and then it is up to them how they want to mine/harvest, etc.  I know there were a bunch of older newb type helper groups, but with the long hiatus, I'm sure many of them have become inactive. I'm sure you'd find some great threads in those to help jump start your group.  Also, highlighting tips from the glitch wiki never hurts either...while the data is typically there, sometimes for new folks, it might be harder to find since they may not know the names for things.  Wishing you the best with your endeavor!

ETA: Hawkwell's Newbie Social Group was, IMO, a huge success when he started it - http://www.glitch.com/groups/RA5186506072LUA/

  • Yes there's no house buying any longer but it does take an awful lot of resources to build some of these exciting things we have available... :)
