What is a good starter house?

Something inexpensive {{ok, cheap}}.

Since moving houses is such a pain {{from various threads read}}, I'd like to pick one I an afford sooner than later, but not out grow too quickly. Mainly for storage, but a little gardening, animal raising would be good.

Side-note: any word on whethe the devs will make it easier to move houses, like have a one time moving box? Place your household good in it, sell tbe house, and you can't open the box until you have the new house and are placing the items into the new place.

  • Look towards houses that have pens for animals - that's a huge plus - believe me. Click on the little magnifying glass in upper right corner of the individual house picture - it will expand the picture a bit more to show you although all the detail is not there.

I like your idea of the one-time moving box - normally when I have to move I bag up everything and my friends have always been so helpful in providing extra bags or slots to help me move to my new home.   My friends click on "follow Me" and then we all wait till I get the free transport token for the new house and poof - we all arrive at the same time to dump my belongings.

  • I am inclined to be a miner, but also like a fairly central location.  And it's nice to be located near a Subway Station.  So I opted for Tallish Crest last time and intend to buy a house there again.  Two light patches, one dark patches, eight garden plots and it is split level so you can confine the animals to the back yard upstairs.  And they are low priced units, too.

  • Tibbi - good starter homes depend on what you want in a home.

Many love the tree houses - for 4K.  Three tree patches, good gardening - 12 crop plots, small storage (18 slots). The downside is that you have to climb up the tree to get to it, if you don't snag one on the ground.

Others like the 'rock'/cave houses - for 4K.  They give you the option of 2 regular tree patches, and 1 dark patch (for an egg plant). And 8 plots for crops. Also, small storage (18 slots).  The one good thing is that you can place your piggies on the ridge and it serves like a natural pen, so they don't come into your garden area. Negative, they can be viewed as a bit dreary.  Positive though is that if you are up for mining metal, they have metal rocks on the block, and also a good number of additional tree patches on the street.

Some will just get an apartment - for 1500, to make do. No trees, and only 4 garden plots, and a small cabinet (18 spots).  Some get them just to have a place to call home or be able to drop things.

The cottage homes of the meadows are a bit pricier (3500-5000), but you get the cuteness of the cottage. Only two trees, and 8 plots and 12-18 cabinet slots.

If you want to grow herbs, look for the firebog homes.  Cheaper homes are 3500-5000.

If you are into gardening, the tree houses seem to be the best bang for your buck.  If you want a blend of trees, the rock houses are a great deal.

And don't believe all the whining about moving that is posted in the forums.  You have a few options for easy/fun moves.  1.) Gather some friends to help you carry bags.  Obviously, these have to be trusted friends in the game, but many like to help and form moving parties. 2.) Sell the excess things you have before moving.  I've conducted all my moves solo because I had enough bags, and I sold off what I didn't really need (or left things for the new homeowner in the cabinet as housewarming surprise).  Prior to reset, I started in an Apartment, moved to the cottage houses in the meadows, and then moved up to Alakol.  I have a dear friend who likes to move solo and at one point she lived in the the tree houses, the rock houses, the Kajuu houses, and now she has settled into the bog houses. In one test session she moved 3-4 times. Moving is not that big of a deal...it can be more challenging at lower levels since you don't have enough bags, but after a while...it's easy peasy.

  • As soon as I had 1500 currants I bought an apartment, but before the test ended, I had been able to sell that and move to a tree house.

As a gardener, the Alakol-style houses with their huge gardens are attractive, but I'm curious about some of the newer regions too.

  • Tibbi -- I'm planning on moving tons, so I know I can't be a hoarder (this time). I consider that a new challenge. :)

My starter house before the reset was in Groddle Meadow -- centrally located, lots of garden plots. This time I chose Groddle Forest. I love GF! :) Plus, GF is close to two mining areas: Uralia (leading to Illmenski) and Alakol. Win win! :)

  • I am a huge fan of the firebog houses Tibbi - but if by gardening you mean vegetables, not herbs, these won't be for you.

Good starter houses that are inexpensive are the already mentioned cave houses in Tallish Crest (and other places but that is good because of subway) and the forest tree houses. I think an animal pen puts the price up a lot but I heard that in Tallish Crest style caves, you can put the pigs on (or behind?) a ridge so they don't get in the way of the garden. You can do similar things in some, not all, of the bog houses, if you want to garden for herbs. Some people find the forest dark, or the caves a bit grey. Is really up to you what you like looking at.

In terms of a house you wouldn't grow out of for quite a long time I would go for a meadows house with 5 patches. These used to be quite inexpensive but have gone up in price, and the other problem is the pigs do get in the way of the veggie plots! I wouldn't worry too much about outgrowing your house, though, as it isn't that hard to move, as others have pointed out.

Edited to add: I looked at the houses you linked to further up, Tibbi. Those are the forest-style houses. I get the impression you are playing for the first time and just wanted to point out that Aranna is really far away from a lot of things! If you would like this style of house, I would get one in the forest itself, much closer to a variety of resources. Or you can also get this style of house in Bortola, which is a little far out but not as far as Aranna. Of course, if you are up for a challenge and really love the look of Aranna, then go for it, but I suspect it will be easier to move out there later than to move back (although if you are patient you can generally move where you want to).

What great info all. Thanks. Should make this easier. :)

  • I love the firebogs, had owned three homes in them, but for a starter home, I would recommend a cave dwelling, especially Tallish Crest (subway access there).  There are a lot of gardening related quests but none for herbs (so far), so having a veggie garden is good for getting those quests out of the way and getting the rewards from them.

Plus cave homes can have both egg and above ground trees.  They are actually the best kind of house imo, for practical reasons.  Still love the look in the firebogs though, always will.

  • Another thing to consider is the way you play the game and what vendors might be nearby.  If you're an avid gardener, for instance, selecting a home base near a gardening vendor might be helpful.  If you're in the firebogs and like to collect and sell fireflies, maybe an alchemical vendor (which sells firefly jars) might be the most helpful to be closest to.  When I was new to the game I worried a bit about purchasing a home because I thought maybe it was like RL where I would have to find a willing buyer and be at the whims of the market (but Glitch doesn't work like that - you sell your home instantly for 80% of the purchase price).

That being said, your style of gameplay may change over time.  So what seemed like a really good idea when you're level 5 may not work at all for you at level 15.  But I moved house... ::counts on fingers:: about eight times prior to reset (between the end of April and last month).  I moved both solo and with friends.  It was never as painful as I thought it would be - actually, getting rid of stuff and settling into the new place was always really, really fun!

My first Glitchian real-estate transactions were also sort of reactionary - my apartment in the Meadow (#1) was basically, "OOh - I can stop leaving jasbo on the street?  SHINY!"  My little home in the Meadow (#2) was a bit more considered.  My move to the firebogs (#3-4) was to be closer to my buddy Nanookie.... All of these were valid choices which I enjoyed tremendously.  My final toodling around Alakol and Salatu were geared towards getting the space and light I desired and finding out that I really disliked getting the last house on the block (furthest from the street sign).  I found that irritating and inconvenient.  I have another friend who adores being furthest from the sign - it affords him the solitude he likes after roaming around the world.

My tl;dr point (ooooh - I have one?  Er, yup) is that whatever you do early on will have its pluses and minuses but you can change your mind and move on, using what you learned about Glitch and your own preferences to make better choices later.

  • I found that if you look at many of the listings, you can find one that has as much as a 10,000c home for MUCH cheaper.  Before the reset my starter home cost 5,000c and was on a street with a subway entrance - which I think is super convenient when still trying to build up to a large house.  I liked the location and I consider the herbs very helpful - especially before having oodles of stuff and currants and a big house in Alakol.  Anyway, this time around, I found a place that had everything my first house had before the reset for 3,500c (1,500c cheaper!) just one street over from the other one - so I'm still close to the subway entrance.  I also like a street with a lot of resources so I can harvest and whatnot on my way home or out.  :-D  I prefer to live in Chakra Phool for that reason before moving to Alakol.  I also think that the egg trees are invaluable when "poor" and you can grow one in the Chakra Phool area.  (I was reading on the forum that in your house you can grow any tree you want, but I don't have the experience to confirm that.)  And I've found cheaper houses in almost all the areas that have just about as many amenities as more expensive houses.  So, look at a few before you buy after you decide which area you want, because there are deals to be had!  :-D

  • My first house before the reset was a cottage in Groddle Meadow.  Eventually, with incredibly generous help from some friends, I got a 30k Alakol house.  This time, as soon as I had enough currants, I bought a shabby little apartment, far from the madding crowd but near the subways and Ancestral Lands (which I love) just to have a place to dump stuff.  I am saving up for a 50k house now only because I want the extra gardening plots.  I have a friend that is locating in Chakra Phool and we plan to trade veggies, butterfly milk & meats for herbs, barnacles & fireflies.  The only thing he's wishing for is that the Devs would build some 30 & 50k homes there too :( . I hope that will happen!

  • Reba, egg trees are the one exception to being able to grow any type of tree in house patches -- you have to have a "dark patch" to grow an egg tree.  Chakra Phool isn't the only place with dark patches though -- for example, the Groddle Heights cave dwellings have dark patches.

  • Moving isn't all that bad really, it's just another in-game task. You feel like you've accomplished something! Turn all your resources into stuff, then sell/donate the finished items along with any treasure, leftover resources just give away at street projects. It's actually kinda fun to move!!

  • When I decided to move from my cheapie tree house to a meadow cottage, I auctioned off the stuff I was collecting & not using (like planks, peat) and immediately I could fit everything I owned into my bags - and soon the auctions brought me more than enough currants to buy my new place.

  • Whatever you decide a house near a subway is mandatory before you learn the Teleportation skills.  I would adore a cottage in Besara but won't buy there until/unless there's a subway.

My first house was a 9.5k (now 15k) currant house in Groddle Meadow.  I went to Salatu and bought a 50k house just to see what it was like.  After reset I bought a 4k Forest home.  Now I'm in a 15k Meadow home, but I'm already thinking of moving into a different style 15k Meadow home.

  • I would highly recommend taking a look at the Housing article on the Glitch Wiki. It gives a good rundown on the different housing types and options. It doesn't really cover location which can be a big thing depending on what you enjoy doing in-game.

Personally I like a nice big home (I organize stuff into giant piles food/rocks/drinks/etc…) and like to hold onto things. When the last test ended I had over 500,000 currants worth of junk on the floor of my house. Mostly meat and milk, with some expensive things (machines/bags/etc…). I also like it to be the closest house to the sign, for the reasons Jasbo listed above. Nothing more annoying than having to select your block, then walk allllll the way down the housing block to get to your house (you also can't annoy your neighbors with a gnome!). So I would pick a house close to a sub station, on a block that is one keypress in (open the sign, press up/down/left/right to select the block) and closest to the sign. It's complicated, but I will probably make it to 50k by Tuesday morning. At least, that's the plan.

  • Haha, jasbo, I too, prefer having a house on the end of the street for the solitude. I like having nice neighbors and whatnot, but I like my home to be a bit removed.

I only moved twice during beta. Started in a 9k (now 15k) Marrakesh Meadow cottage to be by friends (fell in love with that model though). Then to the same model/priced Mien Evoke cottage to be with my RL best friend (only one I had not on the end of the street). I was curious about the Alakol sized homes, so the last 2 or 3 weeks before the reset, I was in a lovely Salatu home. Those are still too modern/sterile for my tastes, but I loved the space and the garden. And I did like the backdrop for it. I did a lot of research before I decided on it too, to make sure I was located where I wanted and had the exterior I liked best (as I liked none very much).

Now I'm back in Mien Evoke with the reset, though it cost me 15k currants this time (again on the far end of the street). I still love the cottage and missed it the couple of weeks I wasn't in it. I also missed not having a gardening vendor on my street. I don't know if I'll upgrade again to Salatu, but I'd probably go back to the same model/location as before. I am kind of going to wait and see what we can do with customization and what new housing may come available.

  • Skwid--I love walking past my neighbors' gnomes and I love walking by their houses so I can leave them drinks and food. Seeing what other people's gnomes say always gives me a kick. My previous neighbor had 18 gnomes and each had their own greeting. I miss that.

  • First, find a location/house type that is good for the skills you are currently working on. Then get as close as possible to a subway entrance for easy travel. Don't worry about storage slots unless you throw a lot of parties as you can pile everything on the floor.

If you think you might move later, just make sure you have everything bagged. I used to keep a stack of bags next to my garden and another stack next to my pig pen to hold all the extra resources. Just pick up a bag, harvest everything, then drop the full(er) bag back on the pile. This also kept everything sorted nicely.

  • @skwid, while the wiki provides a nice overview of the homes, it is actually inaccurate and incomplete right now.

Prices are incorrect for the apartments, the tree houses and the rock houses.  And it only lists the prices for the apartment style homes in the swamps...it doesn't show the cheaper stand alone prices of the same style.
They don't list all the locations of housing either.
They don't display the newer larger rock homes with their pricing structure.
They don't explain the difference between the 30K Alakol/Salatu homes and the 30K Kajuu/Andra homes (less trees and more garden plots in the Kajuu/Andra homes).
They did a good job updating the Meadows homes, but left out that you can also find those styles in Bortola.

Probably, until they get time to update the wiki, it's a bit better just to peruse the actual game realty pages.

  • Yeah it depends on your teleportation status and your economic focus.. that said i wouldnt stress out over it too much. You get most of your money back upon selling, and moving is only really hard for rich hoarders, i think, or pig/butterfly ranchers.

  • Double post becuz editing is a pain on phone: but it used to pay off more to plan housing carefully, because the housing prices were less balanced, and because you could so often find cheaper homes well-stocked with trees and animals. Nonetheless, i HIGHLY recommned the sort-by-price greasemonkey script, perhaps the only way to be sure you're getting the best house for your needs which you can afford.
