help! Back after a year - don't know where to start!

I stopped playing Glitch almost a year ago due to various Skyrim and SWTOR/TERA related distractions.  I heard about the move back to beta but unfortunately I never took a good look at Glitch again until recently.

I finally logged in and ...  I'm stumped.  I see the UI received an overhaul and housing was tossed out in favor or a new system.  I also see that we have iMG points now and that my brain is 475% under pressure *YIKES* .  I also see we've got furniture and some new islands.  However, I'm either confused, confounded or just overwhelmed by everything that I just honestly don't know where and/or how to get started again.

I remember being addicted back when I played and I remember spending hours banging on sparkly in those gated communities of Ajaya Bliss and Neva Neva.  But it all seems like it was so long ago now and I'm struggling to remember why I was so addicted to this game.  I love the aesthetic and the silliness of Glitch but I sit at my new home on an empty street and I'm lonely and unable to make my first step.

Maybe it's because I need goals - yes I know there are quests and maybe I should pay closer attention to them - but I also need more 'meta' goals.  How do I make money now?  I assume income gathering has evolved from selling no-no powder and sparkly.  Why should I garden or make furniture?  Is there a market for furniture?  When I log in, what sort of suggested goals should I prioritize for maximum fun? :)

I know feedback will be highly subjective, but I want that.  Hearing about what specifically makes your Glitch-time fun and engaging may help me gain perspective.  I also know that simply chatting in global is fun for many, but I bore easily of chatroom games :P  I can do that on facebook and google plus all day.

So basically this is a long-winded preface to me asking - what should I start doing?  I have a virgin house on a virgin street with a pile of iMG points and no idea what to do next...upgrade cards, furniture, cooking, gardening, petting, milking, farming.  It doesn't just become a farming/crafting sim, does it?

Also, I know that Glitch's community has always been quite welcoming and helpful, otherwise I wouldn't dare to post this sort of thread.  If I did this on a more mainstream mmo board, I'd get trolled to death.

Please help me out with specifics and give me some pointers on how to re-engage my Glitch engines ^^

Thank you so very much!!

  • Hi Mochi!

First of all, welcome back. I've taken breaks from games (and Glitch) in the past and I know how you're feeling. That weird "unfamiliar familiar" tickle at the back of your brain.

    That said...

I'd start with a little bit of housing. That's been a huge area for upgrades over the year, and it's really in a good place these days. You can spend iMG like currants (and earn it from tasks, quoins, badges, etc.), and a lot of people use iMG to really deck out their places. There are amazing images in the "Snaps" link (up near "Forums") where the creativity of the community shines.

After that, while you could go ahead and work on your home street, I think I'd suggest getting back out into the world. Check out some of those new islands. Mine a few rocks. Pet a fox. Feed a slot. In generally just let the vibe start to flow and feel your way into the game again.

Happy returns and feel free to chat anytime!

  • Welcome back!

If you really do have a pile of iMG, buy some upgrade cards! A lot of the perks that skills used to give you are now portioned out into cards.

The economy has gotten pretty squishy lately. Try  http://www.glitchremote.com/ to get a sense of what's for sale, what's selling, what's not selling, and where all the new content in Ur is!

Looking for a lot of a specific resource? Try  http://seriousroutes.com/ .

Specifically, the best way to make money without relying on other players (if that's your thing) lately is Herb gardening. Get all the skills and upgrades, and go to town on it! Remember to shuck, then sell the remainder to Mr. Tool Vendor (who I'm sure misses you!)

Try collecting the new set of Cubimals! If you're an opener, you'll be able to sell your commons pretty easily, or release them for extra iMG (these two things are related.) If you prefer to buy, you'll be able to finish both sets pretty quickly, with some chutzpah and elbow grease (sold separately.)

There's a market for credit-upgraded furniture, but I don't hear much about the blank pieces. They're also pretty energy/resource-intensive to create.

For me, maximum fun is earning badges! I bet you've got a lot of new ones to chase after: the http://www.glitch.com/encyclopedia/ has oodles of new contextual information that compensates for what we used to have to puzzle out using extensions.

(Another bit about money: plain old interacting with animals like crazy is still one of the best ways to earn, even if you don't bother going to TV to dump.)

Again, welcome back! Hope you have plenty of fun!

  • Welcome back!

Lesse... to answer the basic questions - fun is what you make of it.
Yes, there is a market demand for furniture at the moment. Yes, there is a market for Yellow (flower, seed, and essence) right now. There's a market for most things really.

For you, I'd start off with:
    - Increasing my energy tank to over 2000. This is achieved by purchasing Upgrade Cards. It's most cost effective with the +500 cards, but may take some shuffle patience. 2000 (2200?) is a break point because it unlocks the highest Mood Loser upgrade card. Beyond that, your tank size is really a preference. To figure out what tank size will work best, keep an eye on how much energy you use over the course of a few Glitch Days.
    - Increasing my Brain Capacity and buying Learning Speed cards. You've still got a number of skills to learn (you have 67 of 101). The compounding penalty adds up really really quickly.
    - Join a Housing Resource Route (despite being a mostly solo player, I still recognize the social and gameplay advantages in the HRR's and think they are an awesome tool for most new players). Avoid joining the gardening routes at first, unless you really really want the can of worms that comes with it. Routes are a great way to meet people and make friends with active players. Instructions for HRR's can be found in their Group and/or resources.grelca.com/, also noteworthy glitchroutes.com/build/
    - Keep in mind: Home Street resource are accessible to the public. If you're a gardener you may want to start off expanding your back yard for gardens, but rocks in your Home Street provide a lot of convenience for miners.
    - Explore, explore, explore!

You won't be able to start building a tower until you are Level 18. They can be fun and entertaining, for me it's a great decorative time soak... but are all sorts of resource intensive to build. (http://www.glitch.com/forum/general/24348/)

Good Luck, Have Fun... and remember - Use Your Imagination :D

ETA: Forgot Quoin Multipliers! They max out at 100, so if you run across those upgrade cards - snag em. Every little bit will help and the Quoin Multipliers pay off. Again, aim for the higher counts (+1 rather than the +.25) for most value.

  • Yes, you will love the changes, your new home, your new street, your new clothes and hair and skin color and facial features.

Live Help is a click away if you get stuck on any of the technical details. There's always tons of helpful conversations going on in there.

    Buy some metal rods on auction and go visit a sloth. Or brush a fox. :}

  • Learn the Skills.  When we returned to Beta everything was Reset and we all had to learn the Skills again.  I recommend learning Tinkering as soon as possible.  After that, if you liked Mining, learn those.

You need to learn the new Furniture Making skills and the Spinning skills so you can expand your house, furnish it and build a Tower.

Make Friends and visit their streets to see what you can do.  Many of us have Towers as well as Houses.

Look at the Map.  There is a new Island in the North that is loaded with Quoins and has two areas.  Go there and stock up!  Also go ahead and get the Completionist Badges for those two areas while you are there.  After that you should have a lot of iMG and Currants, Energy and Mood.   Later get the badges for all the other areas, there are some more new ones.

    Check out the Encyclopedia!

  • Oh lovely!  These are exactly the sorts of responses I was hoping for :)  Not only do they give me some good pointers about how best to start my glitchy-trundle through Ur, but I just love hearing about what keeps you guys busy and having fun!  It gives me a good boost to dive back in ^^

I'd so love to hear from others, but this does give me a good starting point to work from.

    Thanks!!

  • Another option which is a bit radical is starting with a new character - you'd go through tutorial and figure out what to do- you would lose your currents and img though (and movement/energy etc would be harder), but it's an option since you are kinda starting from scratch with housing and skills (assuming you did not come back since reset).

  • It's funny, but I seem to have kept all of my skills.  My brain is apparently under pressure :P but everything is still there!  I suppose I'll start puttering around my house and street and attempting to decide what sorts of things I should install, such as rocks, garden plots, animals etc.   I'll check out those street routes too.  Any suggestions on which resource routes are more noob friendly?  I'd love to be a part of that sort of community service/project but I'd need a good ease-me-in resource to start with :)

Is food still an in-demand commodity? Or can everyone pretty much make their own energy-filling foods now?  Same with drinks for mood?

Anyway, thanks for bearing with me and my befuddlement :)  You're all very kind to do so ^^

  • You must have learned some skills after we were reset, I'm guessing. No alpha/beta players escaped the reset before the first launch. lol

Playing with your house and street is a lot of fun. To fully expand and fill your streets, I think around 100k iMG will cover it (just in case you want to have an upfront idea of the cost). Most iMG you may want to spend on the upgrade cards so that gaining it later will be easier.

I just do what I feel like doing when I log in; sometimes I don't know what I want to do. I love gardening... I've been doing that lately. I also love cooking and some of the other skills. Interspersing them helps keep them from getting old for me.

I finished building my tower a couple of weeks ago, and I'd been working on that for several weeks. It was a huuuuuuge goal. And I know what I want to do with it... I just have to get the decorating done. So it's still a huuuuuuge goal (which would be made easier with some more Ilmenskie Deeps/Pollokoo/fancy stone wall paper and furniture... hint hint ;) ). I have no idea when the goal will be realized. I've not had much decorating inspiration lately.

As for your question about food, I don't really know. I love cooking, but don't cook to sell. But there's lots of people that still don't like cooking, and likely would buy food instead of making it and taking up the brain space with the cooking skills.

If you ever have any questions, feel free to add me or IM me.

  • Picking a street route sort of depends on what you'd like to do with your street -- if you like the idea of having a uniform street dedicated to one resource, try one of the "serious routes," which require large numbers of the same thing (e.g., a street with 15 spice trees on it). If you'd rather have something more whimsical with a little of everything, the chaos routes might be more your style. In between there are routes dedicated to raw materials for a specific finished product, like the bean seasoner's and egg seasoner's routes, which give you guidelines but still need variety. The Housing Resource Routes group page has a great overview.

I think it's pretty easy to get started with any of them -- the people running the resource routes are really community-minded, as you might expect! And if you have a big pile of iMG to start with, you should be able to customize your street to meet most routes' requirements pretty quickly.

  • Mochi-Hopefully you'll have as much fun coming back into the game as I did. I left in Nov. for some family/personal reasons. I was on the forums and kept up with what was added ( like houses, foxes, sloths and towers plus new areas) but I missed the "how-to's" and "reasons" for visiting such things. So, fast forward to last month when I was able to come back. WOW! I was not a high enough level to build a tower so I began with that. Leveling up involved visiting new areas and completing early quests I had left behind. I learned new skills (not caring about the potential for brain explosion). Then I completed the new quests. I visited new areas and got badges for completion. LOVE the foxes! Soon I was at level 18. But now I was in need of building materials so more quests and figuring out how to make those items was in order. ....and so forth till today. Basically, I just wandered around till I got my bearings straight. I did use the encyclopedia for locations. I did use friends streets for resources and visiting icons. Best wishes to you and add me as a friend if you like.

  • Wow... everything I wanted to say has been mostly covered!

Just check out the encyclopedia and look at Achievements.  It will show what you've already done, and show you more to come!  There's everything from Cubimal Racing and Drunken Parties to exploration, crafting, and cooking awards.

Enjoy the search for stuff to do!

  • Explore! I'm going in a completely different direction. Visit the sloths and find out what a snail is. Go find the foxes and see how sneaky they are. There are some more seam streets hidden which are more odd and different than the old ones. Then where housing used to be.... There are abandoned towers that need fully investigating, with the basement streets that link them that are random. Plus then there are the new quoin gathering jumpy lands that are so very pretty. Then, spend some imagination and hang about at home.
oh and ps, spend that img, you'll make it back and more in time. first on cards, then on yard.

  • I know just how you feel, I took a year long break and was a bit overwhelmed too. I'm still sort of having trouble figuring out the best way to get imagination and everything. I love a lot of the new features though, and find myself geting just as addicted as I was before! The advice Glitchens have given here seem very helpful, so I think you'll be on your way before you know it! :-) Good luck!

  • Heh, I was just coming in here to ask the same sort of question.

I haven't played since the reset to beta but I *have* kept learning skills (I didn't check back for a while, but about 3 months ago I accidentally went to the bookmark for the skills page and was like "oh, maybe I should start learning again in case I want to play this again").

According to the thingy above, I have just under 300,000 i as well as a pile of quoins. When I log in, will my house and all my old stuff be gone? How do I go about getting a new house? Where do you find or buy these new cards people are talking about? Are there still street building projects? Rook attacks?
Posted 4 months ago by Axe-a-lot-l Subscriber! | Permalink
  • your old house is gone, but you have a new house.
type /home in to the bottom right to take you there.
Everything in your old house should be stored in a moving box at your new house, and also your butler should be ready to unpack on your home street.
when playing press x for a new menu to find the cards and spend img.
your rock will have other ways to spend img
    rook attacks yes.
building projects - only your own house and yard for now.

  • Thanks again all.  Glad to also see I'm not the only one feeling overwhelmed by booting up the game after so long. :)   Once I figure out a direction, I think things will be easier.  I'm also just really scared about spending iMG on stuff that might be a waste.  I suppose making some garden plots and figuring out what sorts of plants I want to focus on is a good step.  I can't start building my tower yet, so gardening and animal tending seem to be the only things to do right now.

We'll see how this goes :D
