Mature discussion: How about a little non lethal combat (optional) i.e pillow fights, paintball etc...

Listen before everyone runs in here attacking me, telling me how I am playing the wrong game or whatever, please hear me out first.

We live in a mostly negative world, what I mean by that is we live in a world where people like to focus on what can't be done far more than what can be done. As I write this out I am almost 100% sure I will receive more replies about how combat would not work in this game rather than how it could work. However I believe that a true sandbox game should be with as little limits as possible. Why not have combat? Who does it hurt? The truth is it would be simple to implement without hurting anyone. I am sure there are plenty of people here who just simply want to enjoy a social experience, but why not have it all? What I am suggesting is add a couple areas for player who want to battle enemies (possible each other)?

The players who don't want to be involved in anything related to combat would never have to go there. It could work and Im pretty sure the intelligent developers could work it into the lore/world. This game has a non violent feel to it, but there are forms of combat that are not as violent that probably would work here. For example, if you wanted to do a sort of pvp system, you could have laser tag, or  foam sword (weapons) duels. As far as pve you could add new enemies in the newly made battle zones and add a hunting skill for player want to go out and hunt the monsters, maybe get resources from defeating the monster that would some how help the community like everything else in this game.

  • I'm starting to get the feeling the OP is trolling us. No one here has been rude or disrespectful, except the OP. The discussion hasn't even gotten heated, except some of the rude OP posts. If the OP isn't a troll, it is obvious, no matter how many different ways we explain ourselves, he/she isn't going to get it and just dismisses our posts. Perhaps it is time to "let it drop" and save ourselves the headache.

  • Agreed - I think the strong reactions to the proposal (which has definitely been modified to make it tamer since I first saw it) have to do both with the OP's discussion style in the comments (once the eyerolling and sarcasm came in, it was pretty clear where this was going), and with the way the suggestion is presented. In the OP, explanations why people opposing it would be wrong takes up more space than describing ways in which this could be done in order to make people actually like the idea. Of course telling people that they are either negative or stupid or cannot read if they disagree will result in certain reactions on their part.

  • First off glitch combat really doesn't fit into glitch or the vision the devs seem to have for glitch. The devs disaprove of having tree poision and antidote wars even. Also Nogoku please stop calling people imature and the like for disagreeing with you strongly "mature Discussions" are like that. Most people don't want any form of combat in the game just accept that. Is it people being closed minded? Well maybe but even if it is thats what the playerbase wants. I personaly am happy with the fact there is no combat in the game it is kind of refreshing to see a good game without violence.

  • "Probably won't be around long enough for it to matter, don't like the community already... I enjoy the game though."

    Nogoku, is this a joke?
You don't like the community because people disagree with what you personally want?
It's time to face the facts: you won't always get what you want.
If you want combat go play SmallWorlds. They have options for that.

  • The reason I play Glitch and I have played since alpha, is that there is no violence. If the OP needs violence in his or hers life, then there are plenty of those types of games around. We are a very kind and helpful community and I am sure most of us will agree we want it to stay this way. Those players who want violence don't stay around long, that makes Glitch a much nicer game. I am enjoying the new puzzle quests that Stoot is including in the game play and I am sure that he and his team have many more of them up their sleeves.

  • Was the OP in bad faith when s/he started this discussion? Probably not.

But by editing the original post's title without NOTING that it had been edited and how, the OP has really skewed the way the debate will be read by others. This is definitely a bad faith way to proceed.

I've been quite impressed by how calm and well-considered most responses in this thread have been. Annuska summed up the majority response here.

It's fine to propose a controversial idea, even if you know it's going to be controversial (why anticipate 'immature' responses otherwise?). But it's not fine to change the terms of the conversation unilaterally and invisibly when it emerges that your original proposition is not being well received.

ETA: Wouldn't it be nice if we had a way to view the edit history on posts?

  • In previous interviews, Stewart Butterfield (aka stoot) has described Glitch as a game in which the players would contribute to creating a culture. I take this thread as evidence that this is well underway.

Communities are protective of their culture. Sometimes this is an obstacle to progress, but some degree of protection is necessary to *have* a culture. So what's the right balance? Well, there is research suggesting that the most enduring and successful communities are those that hold fast to a small set of core values, while being accepting of differences in all else.

This is the balance I'd like Glitch to have. Achieving that balance requires openness to change and creative seeking of ways to accommodate differing play styles. However, it does not require accommodating differing play styles in a way that would change the core values of the game.

  • Heh, I kinda like the idea of food fights.  A special pie you could make that you could splat into someone's face for bonus mood for everyone else on the level.  :D

A giant pong game in plexus was suggested elsewhere - you don't have to get violent to have a little competitive element.  And I think that is the main thing that the OP was trying to get across.

I think everyone needs to calm down a bit here.  The OP made SEVERAL suggestions at the beginning.  Monster hunting was a bad one.  Laser Tag not so much.  In fact, someone else said a game of tag, which actually does exist in a ticket, but would be kinda cool if there was a way to initiate WITHOUT a ticket, since only 4 people can play tag in the ticket, and most of the other races are for 2 people only.  If you look at the possibilities inherent in his original post you can maybe make a little constructive criticism without just posting 'no, no, a million times no'.  Reading the tone of some of the responses I can understand why he got more and more defensive, though he did not help his case early on.

  • Nogoku, I get your point of view, but I don't want the game attracting the kind of people who have a competitive mindset. I like that its not competitive and people like to give each other items etc, nobody 'wins', that's why I play it :)

  • Wow, that post at the top looked nothing like that before. I know I shouldn't still be surprised that that kind of editing is still allowed given how many times I've seen it, but I am. Totally bad faith on the part of the OP, and Tiny Speck, you really need to stop that crap happening. Closing the edit function after a short time will allow people to fix typos etc while still preventing them from going back and changing their words when the discussion doesn't go to their liking.

  • if they added a combat system to the game it wouldn't be typical combat. and i doubt it would even be called combat.

however the game needs ways that people can interact with one another in significant ways. does it have to be something liek combat? no.

the problem that nagoko and others like him have with the community is that you guys are all really weird when it comes to enjoying things like farmville and angry birds. i don't get why these games are so popular and then i have to remind myself it's because you people are out there. there are a lot of you as well. so maybe i'm the weird one.

but what's funny is that you guys act like tehre's this crowd of otehr type of people who are worse than you. the CoD playing 12 year olds.

guess what, i dislike them too.

but the fact is that you're not unique to them. you're all part of a different, and equally large, group of farmville players. you're not unique. you're not special.

  • I think there is too much peace in this game and it need way more violence - nibbling pigs!!!!  picking fruit !!!  omg whats happened to humanity?!!!  what we need is a giant invasion of two headed slatherbeasts and REALLY big swords to fight them off with.  and guns in case the swords break.  whilst we are at it we should have public fongings of anyone who is getting "a bit too nice" we are only one step away from tree hugging lentil eating namby pambyism here people!!!

if we keep all this sensible adult friendly play going on theres a chance we might end up with world peace - now no one wants to see that happen........

  • Ooo, "farmville players"—them's fighting words fo' sho'. :D
Posted 85 days ago by Pascale Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Farmville? Yuck.

Anyways, I'd welcome any games like "laser tag" or something, which is pretty much what the OP suggested, so long as they weren't too trigger-happy and implemented some skill rather than spam-attacking things. I think if they had worded their post differently and mentioned games rather than violence there would have been a better response, but they've pretty much ruined that now.

A new "style" of minigame would be nice, I'm always excited to try new things! :)

  • @ Mr. Dawgg - Stereotype much? Lol. Calling Glitchen, "you weird Farmville players," probably isn't going to go over very well. I have a feeling that not many people who play Glitch, actually play Farmville. Just to let you in on the secret: Glitch > FB games. ;) So, I think you are preaching to the wrong crowd.

PS -  if you are just trying to differentiate between hardcore gamers and browser gamers, your separation needs to be a little more precise, I'd say. There are actually a number of different types of gamers out there.

    1. Hardcore vs. Casual
This is probably the most basic difference. The difference between those who make gaming their life and those who occasionally use gaming as a means of escape from a busy and hectic life.

    2. FPS vs. Fantasy MMO
First person shooters like CoD, Battlefield, Half Life, etc. and on the other side you have common MMOs like World of Warcraft, RIFT, etc.

    3. FB vs. Indie
Facebook games like Farmville, Castleville, Sims Social, etc. don't require a whole lot of thinking on the gamer's part. Basically they are just a way to kill time and play with (read: annoy) your friends. Indie games, like Glitch, are usually more clever, in depth and have some personality behind them (and not just a money grab from the developers). Also, mobile games can tend to be either FB-like or more indie style, depending on the developer and aim of the game.

    4. Simmers
This one gets its own category, because simmers (those who play any of The Sims franchise, which is very extensive) are a whole different breed of gamer.

I fall into... well, basically a little of every category up there. I am a casual gamer who plays WoW, RIFT, Mirror's Edge, some Battlefield and Skyrim, Sims 2 and 3, Glitch, and occasionally, even Castleville and Sims Social. I like variety, what can I say?

Just thought I would point that out, in case it helps clear up the fact that there are a lot of different types of "you people out there," and that we're not really a "bunch of weirdos" as you seem to have us pinned (although, I suppose, that must be left up to individual opinion).
