Banishment

partly inspired by the action of Stoot (i think) the other night when dealing with a spammer...

Perhaps the higher bureaucratic skills could include the option to vote for temporary banishment for troublesome players - a collective vote if someone is being an arse!

Banishment could be to somewhere where they have to complete a socially motivated test - such as growing and caring for food for new players..... not a fully thought through idea but would love to explore!

  • @Bob That spammer was also a thief. See my post in Faunasphere Refugees "Don't Let This Happen To You".

  • I saw a bag on the floor of a home I was invited in to and noticed that I could pick it up---although curious, I didn't, because I didn't want to risk stealing from them. I also considered the possibility that items just appear at random in areas for anyone fortunate enough to come across them to pick up (which after playing for a bit, I realize is not true). Perhaps this person that stole from Rachel2635 didn't realize they were stealing personal property? If they did, that is sad. Either way, I don't think people should be able to pick things up from other people's houses.

  • First of all, I don't think it would turn out to be a good idea to be able to vote for banishment. I mean, this would just create negativity. There are going to be plenty of people playing whose only goal is to be annoying, so those people could start "campaigns" against people, which would be unpleasant. I just don't see the need to start that. People could also create multiple accounts and banish people on their own! Perhaps you could "report" people to devs, who could take care of it on their own if they saw fit.

Second, Sparkleshine was never banished, just FYI :) She signed off on her own after Stoot interfered.

Third, I like that people are able to pick things up anywhere--it makes it realistic. I mean, what about parties? It would suck if only the host could pick things up. If people don't want people picking things up, they should set up garden gnomes, put their stuff in cupboards or just not let people into their houses. You're not being forced to let people into your home.

That's just my opinion though. I might not be seeing all sides of the argument--anyone else?

  • only mostly not true -- planks and sometimes spices or bananas will spawn on the ground in various locations.

  • There's gonna have to be some sort of ignore function eventually, not just with chat.

  • I will post a little about the system Faunasphere used because it could be quite helpful for problems. You could "block" a player who annoyed you in there, which didn't mean that they got reported to anyone, just that you could no longer see their thought/chatting/trade requests, etc. Was nice to just shut someone off only for you and not penalize them publicly or for just being annoying. This wouldn't fix the picking up of your items that you had set down on the ground problem, though.

We also had a "report" feature for those who really were violating the terms of use, cursing at people, etc. You had to explain why and they promised to read the reports before deciding on any kind of ban...they could view chat history and so forth to decide if action was needed.

Having said that, this game is a bit more edgy than FS was so you know, some things like cursing seem to be acceptable whereas they were more no-nos in FS (and I don't mean powder ;) . But I think these ideas still could be useful....

  • Something like a collective banishment will not work in an MMO. There's just too large a possibility for griefing and misuse. What will likely happen instead is that Tiny Speck will implement a mute feature, as well as designate a select few trusted players to be chatroom and forum moderators.

  • And really, don't leave stuff on the ground.
I know, I know, your inventory gets full and stuff spills out and the music block you just won with a gameshow ticket is laying at your feet ... and then someone comes along and just picks it up...
    how rude.
I know because I've lost gems, blocks and sparkly rock from inattention and lack of space and so it's partly my own damn fault if it happens. Those who took my stuff were new, I suspect they said to themselves hey look, shiny, picked it up and went on their way. That's how I choose to believe it happened.
I walked by someone (not naming names) in game in the last test with a whole pile of mined rocks and gems at their feet. I mentioned the foolhardiness of this behaviour and they were willing to risk it because this is alpha, and most people are on their best behaviour .

I don't expect that to last.

Banishment is not the answer. Ostracism only goes so far is ripe for misuse, and really doesn't work with an outlaw character anyway.

Aldaris is right; moderators and a mute feature can take care of this.

  • I just accidentally "stole" something from someone. I was trying to use a vender, but my 9 month old son was in my lap and he started button mashing. It picked up the thing, I tried to turn around to find the owner, but the game won't reopen. I would not like to be banned, lol :P

  • if by banishment you mean the ability to teleport another player to a random location against their will then that could be funny.  Would need a high cool down period to avoid abuse.

  • No. I've been on too many sites where the Heathers all get together just to grief someone until they go away, usually based on non-site drama and/or hearsay. Some guys just have no lives.
