GARDEN EMPTIED

I hope I wont offend anyone but I have cleared out my friends list due to all my animals, collectors, feeders being taken from my new house street. it is not the first time I have had animals taken but this is the first time I been cleared out, I just kept my friends who I know and trust.
the back garden is so small so I thought they be safe to keep in my street how wrong was that.
I will give to anyone but please don`t take, or should I say steal.
I just wanted to warn others what`s happening,

  • Even though your friends list is empty, people can still go to your house. As long as THEY have you on THEIR friends list, they can come to your house. The only way to stop them from having you on their signpost is through blocking them.

  • this has been talked about a bunch of times in the past.  i don't mean to sound unsympathetic, but it's a public street.  if you want things to be safe, as always, put them in your house not next to it and don't give out keys.

  • that's very sad.  i thought rooks were the only predators in glitch.

  • Anyone can get to your street - so it probably was not one of your friends. I had a half dozen chicks taken off my home steet, but since it is a public way, that is the chance you take.

No one can get into your house if you have not given out any keys.

  • People can still access your street if they or someone they know has you on their sign post. Also why would you leave something you didn't want taken in a public space like your street.

  • Don't leave things out on the street if you are going to be upset if someone takes them... I have had people take things from my home street, but then I have also had people leave things on my home street.  In addition to the occasional cocktail or snack, twice now someone has left piggy feeders and meet collectors, and twice someone has taken them.

  • :( I haven't left anything other than a couple of 'very' common cubimals on my home street.  It really never occurred to me to leave anything else out there.  I sure won't bother now though if glitchen are on the 'grab what I can'  rounds : ( : ( : ( : ( - surely there is enough in game for them to grab without having to go to peoples home streets whom they don't even know.  On the plus side at least we can kick them out if they're caught in the act ;)

  • To lose collectors it just takes someone to pick them up but to lose butterflies and chickens too takes some knowledge and expense (youth potion) or setting them free - which has no benefit to the player concerned.

This seems like griefing and not just casual theft, so not sure the too bad, so sad response is fitting here.

  • I want to thank whoever left the gifts for me, It was so thoughtful I will put them out my back garden. I would have liked to see a note with your name on it but thanks again.

  • I believe that the "too bad, so sad" response is unfitting in most situations.

It actually is sad that there are so many things for free in Glitch, but still some people feel the need to grab everything. It's even sadder because a huge majority of players will happily give things away, even without being asked. So, I feel your pain, davinia and you're not wrong to be saddened.

Question: Is it possible for someone other that the /home street "owner" to set free any butterflies/chickens on that street? I'm not sure it is.

  • @ Miss Parsley I hear what you are saying, but have to point out that youthing (youthenizing?) animals doesn’t necessarily “cost” anything at all.  Many of us have a surplus of miscellaneous herbs from working on the Überculturalist achievement, a surplus of miscellaneous tinctures from the Enchanting Extractorator achievement, and a surplus of miscellaneous potions from the Libatious Borage Award achievement, so if I have a bunch of potions sitting in my inventory, possibly including Potions of Animal Youth, that are left over from working on achievements it doesn’t cost me anything, or even involve much in the way of planning, to use them. In other words; the youthenizing and removal of animals from a street may be incidental.

Because we cannot expect other players to be psychic mind readers and know what we intended when we leave an item on the street, we should keep in mind that there have been numerous topics/posts in the forums telling players not to worry about finding the owner of some item or other that they have found because other players regularly leave items on streets intending them to be gifts to whoever finds them.

As for the possibility that the Ops experience was the result of griefing…Not only does griefing seldom happen in a vacuum, and we don’t have any visibility into whatever conflict may have prompted griefing, but if it looks or feels like griefing to the OP, then it’s a matter for reporting to TS.  If they find that another player is targeting the OP I am sure they will take action.

My point is that our game play experience is well served by adjusting our expectations to accept the mechanics of the game, specifically the fact that home streets are (mostly) public streets, and players are free to take, leave, and interact with most items found on those streets.

  • I'm not sure the too bad, so sad response is fitting here or anywhere in glitch for that matter. I don't care if it is a "public" area or not...in a nut shell, people should just bloody damn well leave things alone that do not belong to them, if they are directly outside some ones house or now in the home streets, it isn't like  davinia   left it laying out in an open street next to a vendor or a shrine for example..now that's "public". Why can't they go buy their own stuff...I never leave anything out, simple for this reason alone. I would love too, but wouldn't encourage the little thieves. This just enforces the lock down idea that we all or at least most of us would like to see come into play.  It's ridiculous that every time someone gets something taken someone is quick to jump on their backs and tell them they shouldn't have left it there. Maybe they shouldn't have, but some folks are more trusting than others. It is the too bad, so sad type like responses that encourage this kind of behaviour, a caring helpful community. I think not!!!  Well least some of us are.!
davinia  If there is anything you need ..let me know. ..And yes most of us could probably have told you, leaving your stuff in your home street would not have been a safe thing to do...sad but true!

  • Syruss: Adjusting our expectations to accept the mechanics of the game is seriously good advice. Thank you muchly for not saying "that's the game, suck it up". :D

There's just one small reservation. Because the game is in beta, now is the time for players to suggest changes to the mechanics of the game. Indeed, Tiny Speck is actively looking for ideas along those lines. Having realistic expectations of game mechanics will be a much more sensible goal once decisions about those mechanics have been formalized and implemented in preparation for re-launch.

  • Flowerry Pott, I agree wholeheartedly, Beta IS the time to suggest changes, and maybe I misread the original post because I did not understand it to contain any suggestions for change/improvement.

Also, I felt compelled to comment as a counterpoint to those insisting on vilifying in the forums those players that exercise valid game mechanics. I, for one, appreciate that our actions in Glitch are not restricted by an arbitrary ethic, that there is not a "single right way" to play, and that, in Glitch, morality has real meaning since it is a mater of personal character and not dictated behavior.

  • It doesn't take a brain surgeon or rocket scientist to figure out when someone puts animals out on their street with feeders and collectors that they are not putting them out their for people to take, but for their own use.  Yeah yeah yeah, it's a public street, but how about some common decency and not steal what is obviously not put there for you.

I've seen so many people who have planned to decorate their home street but now change their mind cause they know everything not locked down will surely be stolen - sad :(

  •  I think once we have a chance to expand our streets, we will enjoy being able to wander from place to place, enjoying the variety of resources and streets our friends have imagined for us.

We just need to adjust our brains to thinking of Our Streets not as homes, but as this completely Other Ur defined by our relationships with other Glitches...  That seems pretty awesome to me and something that is better than a few meat collectors.
    :)

  • What I was trying to say was that emptying a garden of everything is not the same as a player randomly picking something up. It was a deliberate act and should be reported.

The "too bad, so sad" comment I made is not my belief, theft is theft to me and it does put a real downer on the game and I wish there was a way to prevent it. The comment was because there have been many threads where that sort of response was made to someone who had lost items from the front yard and I thought this was a bit different.

The 'cost' i mentioned was more that it took thought and deliberate actions to either 'youthenize' or set the animals free. If we just sigh and do nothing to report these acts of deliberate griefing then TS will do nothing about it either.

  • Syruss, I'm sure you didn't mis-read the original post! I hope I didn't imply that but if so I apologize. That would never be what I meant to say.

I mainly wanted to thank you for being so gracious in your response, instead of, shall we say, showing a lack of empathy toward the OP.

Really excellent point about morality though. I hadn't looked at it in that light before, but of course virtue is meaningless unless it is exercised by a free individual choice.

ETA Miss Parsley: Please believe me when I say that I at least was not assuming that the "too bad, so sad" comment was your belief. I was agreeing with you and expanding it to include most situations, in real life as well as in Glitch. There are situations where that attitude is called for, but very, very few.

  • Cabinwood...
and yet, repeatedly there have been feeders and collectors on my street... I was pleased to see them there, a gift for anyone who passes by to use, but I did not put them there, and apparently rocket scientists and brain surgeons would not be smart enough to accept that there was no intent for them to be there for my own use. Also, decency is predicated on free choice, and that means accepting that some people don't choose your definition of decent.
Posted 9 months ago by Syruss Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I agree with  Cabinwood  I love sharing, I love giving people stuff..I equally would love to eventually be able to decorate my home street, but at the moment (and I know it's beta), but out with beta..we cant decorate outside our houses, because what would be the point if the stuff we put out will just be lifted.
Posted 9 months ago by Cryztal Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Syruss, that's fine if we have different definitions of decency.  I'll stick to mine!

  • It would be neat if we could booby trap the piggies, feeders and other items on our street to implode into little currant eating black holes when picked up by would be thieves. That would be too much fun.  : D

You wouldn't even have to have them eat many currants. Maybe 2,000 or so and they would be pretty effective. Thieves would have to wonder... will this be the piggy that implodes on me or not. Make the booby trap potion based so it could be part of a pre-existing skill tree.

  • In ethics, a distinction is sometimes made between positive duty (doing good) and negative duty (doing no wrong). When the "wrong" involves significant harm to others, communities often seek methods to enforce negative duty, thus removing the opportunity to exercise virtue by choice. While opinions may vary as to whether significant harm is possible in the virtual world of a computer game, I understand the desire people have within Glitch to lock items on a street for which they feel responsible in the same way I understand the desire people have in the real world for locks and police forces.

At the same time, I think there is an argument that at least some aspects of the current design are based on the need for game balance.

The new housing system allows the effective size of the Glitch game space to grow as new players join the game. Having each player who consumes resources from the "general fund" also provide some resources to the "general fund" helps to keep the game in balance.

Keeping the game in balance also requires keeping the game space from becoming either too resource-poor or too resource-rich. If animals, feeders, and collectors could be locked in place, the game space could easily become too resource-rich.

Finally, making it possible for anyone who visits a street to change the type of trees planted on that street helps the "invisible hand" keep supply and demand roughly in balance.

This is not intended to be an argument against change. I just want to point out that some things may work as they do for reasons that aren't obvious at first. However, I'm pretty sure there will be some changes. One small change that might be helpful would be to describe a Home street as "provided by X" rather than "owned by X."

  • I didn't read this whole thread so please excuse me if this has already been said.  Is there any chance this was the result of a bug (known or unknown)?  Have you filed a help case or bug report?

Again, if this has been said already just disregard.

  • This is highly unlikely to have been a bug. It's just people being greedy. I'm totally going to suggest the imploding piggy booby trap in the suggestions forum.
