flash cs6 with html5 support, how does TS think?

I just watched the video of how flash now can export to html5 and that they are keep developing the as3 to js translation. What does TS think? Are we going to get glitch that ran on mobile soon or that cs6 technology is still not usable for games?

  • As someone who knows enough about Javascript to do some stuff possibly, porting all of Glitch to HTML5 just really isn't feasible. Anything that exports one code to another language is not going to be nearly as optimized as rewriting it from scratch, and with the current state of HTML5, that'd take a while. Though advancing at a great rate, HTML5 really can't handle all the things Glitch needs to do.

    ...

YET. In a couple years though, this might be very feasible.

  • As far as I know they wanted to do just that, but a couple of months ago stoot said they gave up on the idea, guess it's too complicated, although it would be freaking great. I suppose the game would run a lot faster then it does now!

  • My mistake, his post seems a lot more optimistic than I thought it did!

  • One issue with non-swf delivery of the client executable is ensuring the integrity of the code. If the code bundled as script it is possible to inject modifications -- aka cheating. There is almost no skill required to play, so I don't see a huge benefit, but imagine auto-pet / water / harvest of entire streets using simulated input. The risk profile can be minimized by having the server validate all activity, but if the client executable is compromised it will cause much headache.

[ long ago I was a client developer for a network game called netrek, and ensuring integrity of the client was a significant concern ]

  • Jono has had a bit to say on the whole "what about Flash and HTML5?" thing. It's not the most recent of comments, but he's a busy guy.
