Friending for those without Facebook

I think it's great that social media can be so easily linked in with games like this, but what about those of us that don't really use Facebook or Twitter? Right now, the only way I can add a friend is to email or IM them and get their profile page link or somehow actually find them in game. It's not very convenient, and that is how I found out about this game in the first place. While I have accounts on some places people use as social networking, it's not my thing. I have enough OCD issues to not need more compulsive things to check.

So what I'm asking for is other ways to find people you know are part of the game. Like searching by email address. For example, if I find out Friend X is a Glitcher, but I don't get their info while we're talking, I can go to that friends tab and enter their email address and it will send me to their profile page if the email matches an existing account. Of course, I'm sure some people wouldn't want to be found that way, but that could just be a checkbox in profile to allow or disallow that kind of account lookup.

This is more of a minor disappointment in the current user interface because I get frustrated even trying to follow people's tweets, buzzes, shouts, scribbles, etc. on all those darned social sites. Not all of us are in love with it.

  • (I'm really curious, is your name from Dr Who?) :)

  • Yeah, I'd support an on-site lookup method for finding people, by character name, e-mail address, or possibly being able to lookup people by skill possession, in-game location, or even home ownership.

Want to make a deal with someone with high-level tinkering to fix your stuff? Need an admixer to whip you up a powder? Wondering who owns a particular house you just passed by? Look 'em up.

  • (actually, I've been using it since the late nineties. It's from back when noun-verb names weren't totally cliche.)

And Doc, those are things I hadn't thought of, but yeah, being able to look up people who might be able to help would be nice, too. Especially if you could restrict skill/achievement searches to people currently online.

  • Riversong-I don't have an account on any of those social network sites either. However, I DO have a lot of friends I met through Faunasphere. We are quite a friendly bunch and would love to have you join our group at Faunasphere Refugees here on this site. That way you could chat on these forums and get to know some of us a bit if you like. You do realize that when you find a friend you can just click on their name from their post and that brings up their profile so you can then add them as a friend-right?

  • @ Holly, yeah finding someone by name/profile makes sense and works fine. But what if you know someone is in the game and can't find their character name to click on? As with my hubby who got his invite but couldn't play last time; he set up profile but then had to post in the FS group discussions just so his name would appear for people to click on. I even had trouble friending him, and he's linked to my Facebook account, lol.

I'd love to see a search by character name function...plus what if you met someone in game and forgot to friend them there and then...and can't find them in here...?

  • rascal-yes a search function would be an excellent idea. Riversong made it seem like she was looking for friends to meet though. Sorry if I misunderstood.

  • @Holly, Rascal actually hit on what I was trying to say.  I put this in the ideas side because it's more that I have people who I know are in the game somewhere, but unless I go through draconian efforts outside the game, finding out who they are here just doesn't happen.

I actually find the current friendliness and helpfulness of this game one of the big pro factors.  Other games I've played I've been criticized by players just because there's a belief in one right way to play because that's where the advantage in leveling or whatever lies.  Like if the people using no-no started insulting non-users because it's "dumb" to not use those advantages.  So far, that hasn't happened here, and I'm actually very grateful.

  • Hee, @ Riversong, there was/is a thread debating the merits and demerits of no-no powder, as well as a fairly funny but brief miners vs. cooking lovers feud. What kills me about them all is that the spirit is very much silly or, in the case of the no-no powder, thought-provoking. I don't see much true griping, which, as you say, is marvelous. Such a great bunch going in here.
