  • I'm confused, how do people have 14 invites when you can only invite 5 people at a time?
I'm begging my friends right now to join glitch.. haha but this feat is hard to do.. not exactly hard but "limited" so I might as well not do much. :P

  • I state upfront that I haven't read other people's response to this latest feat yet, nor have I read any relevant staff response.

I will say now that I am really appalled that TS is essentially soliciting spam invites. The entire idea is repugnant to me. I have promoted Glitch to the friends I believe would be interested and enjoy it. I will continue to do so as long as the game retains the charm and inventiveness that appealed to me originally.

Of course I understand the need to promote the game and get the word out. I just really dislike this approach. A lot.

  • That last feat was so beautiful, but, this one is the Geraldo opening Al Capone's vault of feats. Nuts.
Posted 60 days ago by Otto Otto Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Hm, I know maybe one or two friends who might be interested, but I'm really not crazy about the idea behind this feat. But inviting contributes to the feat, and everyone benefits if completion of the feat unlocks something in game. What to do. Invite now to contribute or inquire after the feat and send out invitations if they want them.
    Umm, ummmmm...
I'm gonna go back to studying.

  • @Stoot, presumably you are being disingenuous when you claim not to understand tonight's slew of comparisons to Zynga.  However in case you are actually *totally unfamiliar* with that company and its practices, I can reassure you that nobody is saying that in-world play resembles a Zynga game (so your answer above completely if not deliberately misses the point).

You may be surprised to hear they are alluding to Zynga's frequent mechanic of making [a desired object or almost anything in a game] available to a player only with the collaboration of that player's friends or "friends".  Frequently in the early days of Facebook, before we all figured out to prevent any apps from running there, this meant a public appeal on one's wall (RIP 'wall') or a targeted email message outside of gameplay, asking people to log into or join the game, to aid with sundry tasks and events.  It is this comparison that your constituents are making, with the feat in which we are asked to appeal to our friends via direct messages to join the game, and for which we will be rewarded with some highly-desired treasures.

  • When I think of a feat I think of a personal or group achievement or accomplishment.

A feat can also mean an exploit, which, in the more negative meaning of the word, is what this 'feat' is to me.

Many in this thread, and the other I've read, have said how much this feat sucks. I agree. It totally sucks ass.

    I'll sit this one out.

Too bad. The whole thing started off kinda fun.

  • acronymph: "Must I actually spam my friends with invites in order to take part in the next phase of this?"

You don't have to do anything. The way we see it, players send out invites every day — this is a reward for those that do today and perhaps enough of a nudge for those that have meant to, but have not yet sent one.

This is a bit OT, but this question and response underscores a difference in attitude that I see between TS and their most avid players.    TS believes you should just play the game and occasionally nice things will happen to you - you might get something from a feat, or a badge will come up.   Hardcore players want the badges as soon as possible and will do the craziest things in order to get them.   When TS says "you don't have to do anything," it completely discounts the way many players feel about the game, which at the moment is a zombie-like "MUST WIN ALL FEATS."

  • Yeah, I haven't read all the posts, just skimmed this last page and see that my thoughts are echoed by others but, honestly Tiny Speck, what will the next feat be? Everyone gets 1 notch on the meter each time we donate a thousand dollars to your next advertising campaign?!
Posted 60 days ago by Violet Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @WalruZ Yup. It also doesn't answer what was asked, which is "Must I actually spam my friends with invites in order to take part in the next phase of this?"  It's "I want to be involved in feats, but to do so, I have to play in a way I disagree with" which Stoot's answer unfortunately neglected.

  • Splendora, I agree. I've invited people in the past, and I think the forum-like places where I posted about the game before might be good for a few more new players. The thing is that I would feel honour-bound to mention the feat in my advertisement, which of course would make the whole thing (including the game) look rather bad to anyone reading my post.

And while I could easily make my way on the current leaderboard by inviting all of the email accounts I've had over various periods... what's the point? It wouldn't do any good to the game, except perhaps to show in a TS statistic that so-and-so number of invites has been sent. But that statistic would also show that no one seems to like the game, because people didn't create accounts.

Yes, add me to the list of those not really impressed.

  • I think people who don't like this feast for any reason, don't understand you are not forced to do anything you don't like in this game. It is completely up to you what you would like to do in game, it is your choice of how you want to play, what you want to learn, when and who with you want to play. You don't have to harvest trees even there is obvious reward for it. This is far away from any Zynga game style.
If I like this feast personally? Not of my favorite ones, but would be happy if any of my friends I was thinking about might love this game would join and I will enjoy to help them with the game in their beginnings. And that is my reward.
And I totally understand why Glitch made this and I am sure they will repeat it maybe once-twice a year (Zynga players, you see that difference?) to try to get new players in, that's fine with me. Because nothing in this world is free and this game cost way too much energy and money to not to get their reward. If they will not get it, this game will probably disappear one day....

  • I did a follow up with my invites, asking those to whom I sent them, to please use the invite and try the game - one has answered, so far, with "What invite?"!! - How do we find out if they even got them if they haven't told me that they did/didn't?
I now am stuck with no invites left and no way to insure that those who were sent one even got it.

Remember what the big letters on Gentle Island say: Glitch is supposed to be a relaxing game. It's kind of a sandbox world and you're free to do literally whatever. Maybe some players could benefit from learning how to relax more when they play; as a gamer, I've never found this game to be particularly suited to grinding.Maybe I'll go sing to some butterflies now. Or maybe I won't! I'm not sure yet. The world is ripe with possibility.

  • skera, we aren't stupid, and we do understand that we don't have to do this - that is why many of us have said that they aren't participating. The point is that we are being encouraged to do something that many feel is not good, and that the leaderboard, the global goals that make one feel guilty towards the whole community for not taking part, and the reward objects are meant to get people to do it. If TS didn't mean people to invite in order to be rewarded, they wouldn't have made this a full stage of the feast.
Posted 60 days ago by Not a Princess Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @skera @Elizabeth Park-Fowl: Feats exist as something where Tiny Speck goes: Hey! Here is a limited-time event that you have to do now to get in at all! Hurry and join in!

When people see others having fun with something, they do want to join in. (Otherwise we wouldn't have ever invited anyone, right?)  That's what being part of a community is. Watching everyone contribute to make those numbers rise is fun. Sitting in Global and seeing people talk about it excitedly is fun. That is to say, when it's something that doesn't run counter to how you feel the game "should" be. When a game is about community group effort (like the death/dying) and working together and running around and meeting people in-game, being coyly made to basically be free marketing feels cheap.  Can we ignore it? Yes. I am. That doesn't mean I can't tell Glitch I don't want to see it happen again, or we can't discuss why it's a problem. As well, when it's the "climax" of three feats that WERE a lot of fun, it feels like a big letdown to reach the end and go "oh, you did all this and now you get to be FREE MARKETING :) We'll reward you!" and thus either have to sit it out or engage in (tried and well-known and frequently considered underhanded) tactics common to online gaming which you disagree with. If we knew up front that it would end up in a marketing ploy, we wouldn't have got involved. Getting involved and hearing the end is a bait and switch is the real problem here.

  • You know, 10000 invites is a ridiculously large number by any account. Looking at the numbers on the achievement pages, 53000 players have visited at least 5 streets. 31000 players have played for 11 hours. Just yesterday I celebrated the 10000th home street on the Housing Resource and Routes site. None of these are accurate measure of how many active players there are, but by even the most generous estimate increasing the player base by a fifth is, dare I say, no mean feat.

Now, I just did a bit of testing, and it seems that any invite you send out counts, though to get more you'll have to have the recipient actually sign up for the game. I'm not sure what would happen if 10000 new players do sign up in 24 hours, but I think it'll be messy.

  • You do all realise this an optional task? Everyone can't top the leaderboard. Heck, loads of us can't even get on it!

For those who have friends they want to invite, now is a good time to do it. For Jimmy-nae-pals like me this isn't the right task. But I haven't built a tower either! Nothing in Glitch is compulsory.

And to leap to Stoot's defence - The way we see it, players send out invites every day — this is a reward for those that do today and perhaps enough of a nudge for those that have meant to, but have not yet sent one.
He's referring to the population of players as a whole, not individuals who spend all their time sending out daily invites.

  • I didn't enjoy the second feat in this epic either, so I'm just chalking this particular event up to an aspect of the game I don't enjoy (like bean trees, the hell with bean trees). I may not ever enjoy feats properly while there's grinders going for the leaderboard on every one, it reminds me in general too much of Xbox Live and other online multiplayer games: "Oh, you didn't buy the game the day it came out and immediately spend fifty hours playing it? Kiss your enjoyment of online competition goodbye, then!" That's in no way what Glitch is about for me; I don't have time to play it that much.

I thought of five people to send invites to who might be intrigued or might just delete them and carry on with their day; one accepted and I got a sixth invite, so I sent that one off to somebody too. Now I'm on the leaderboard. None of them have to join or even read the emails; I didn't have to do it but I chose to, and it pained me less than participating in yesterday's lagfest. Since the feats really are individual and happen only to be packaged as epics (I get rewarded for each one separately, don't I?) I'm 2 for 3. I did like the Thanksgiving-ish theme of the epic, though. Canada representing. ;)

  • Enjoyed the 1st and 2nd of this 'set' of feats, they were fun (and many thanks to those who died repeatedly for me to help me reach position 15). Not sure I'm going to enjoy the sudden influx all at once of newbies created from this 3rd feat however. I understand TS want new players and that's great... however, when you have TOO many new players all at once, it changes the game dynamic because older more experienced players find themselves bugged by a LOT of newbies who don't know what to do, don't know how to play, and don't understand the co-operative nature of this game. Helping out people is great, and part of what the game is about, but helping out a lot of new people all at once over and over and over isn't, or pointing them over and over away from trade chat and towards live help etc. Also, with more feats coming immediately on the tail of this one, I forsee a fair number of newbies getting ignored because people are busy with the next feat - Overall, not a good thing in my opinion. I'm sure TS could have thought of a way to encourage more new players, but in a slightly more staggered way that didn't make the ratio of old to new so instantly crappy. :(

once I had a favorite restaurant. they made everything for me for free, or asked few coins for few things, they did everything I ever imagined for me (if it they were able to do that), they entertained me for free for long months.I loved this restaurant, spent a lot of time there. Everywhere I go I was telling people how I love that place. Some of my friends join me to spend some nice time together there.
once restaurant owner ask me to do a favor for him. If I know about some other friends, who will enjoy the place too, then invite them to help raise the business and I will get a free dinner.

Do you see that difference? Nobody ever asked me to stand in front of the restaurant to make a marketer and convincing strangers to get in.
I do understand boycotters, what I don't understand is why everyone gets seriously aggressive. All this negativity. Where it comes from?
For me this has other impact: do I want to play this lovely free game with people like that?

  • I agree with everyone who has said that a feat involving inviting new people doesn't seem very Glitch-like. +1 to Vialdana too for emphasizing that an influx of newbies tends to cause a huge upset as people will get tired of all the newbies asking questions about things that are very easily found and yet it wouldn't be Glitch-like either if the old players are too busy meeting the goals for feats to bother with the new players.

  • @skera That is a terrible, terrible analogy. First of all, MANY of the people complaining are subscribers, so they do pay for their food. Secondly, eating at a restaurant isn't a community activity in the same way that the feats are.

I will give you another ridiculous analogy that demonstrates the opposing point: you go to a community event, like Burning Man, where you bring what you can and everyone shares. You come across a group who have the wildest parties, the funnest people, the best food. You are invited to sit with them and enjoy your time, but they tell you that in order to do any of the dancing, you have to go find 10 friends and invite them. They offered this to you for free, but now, in order to enjoy it, you have to jump through an unrealistic hoop that has nothing to do with the dancing itself. They further add that everyone else can't dance until you find 10 people. They in fact have been telling you all night how cool the dancing is, and now you're ruining it for everybody by not helping find more people to join in.

  • Not really a feat, is it??

    It's not an in-game thing.
Posted 60 days ago by snygyst Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I've been in Sales & Marketing forever, so I really do understand this, but I think it was executed really, really poorly. You had the feats increasing participation, everyone working together, looking forward to a weekend of more and more. You totally burst that bubble at the height of the excitement by asking everyone to stop playing, no fun next feat, go spam your friends and it all came to a screeching halt. I had today off and was going to stay up late and play last night but went to bed instead. No fun at all.

IMO, you should have had a fun epic of feats all weekend, and then at the end, as Monday rolled around, do the ask the friends thing, when everyone was all pumped up for how much fun they'd had all weekend, and maybe give it a week to send out invites in a very low key way.

But popping the bubble of fun -- bad idea.

  • @ railroadbaron
yep, that is ridiculous analogy, since Burning Man is ridiculous expensive event to go to. there is not a simple item in Glitch you need for a gameplay you can not get without credits. entry is also for free.
so in order to get the feast done, you are asked to invite some friends you think might enjoy the game. event we all know this game is cool, fun, relaxing, etc, even we all are not stupid and we all know the background of it, there is hell much of negativity, anger and aggression going to TS right now. it is ok to say, hey, this is not the way I like to moving forward, it is ok not to agree. TS tried their best to satisfied all of us. And even this was not their best step, it is just too much for me to read posts like "I will stop playing, I will take a break, I will wait, it is not fun anymore, this ruin the game..."
Are you going to yell on everyone at Burning Man that they don't want you to dance with you alone?
Posted 60 days ago by skera Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @skera My analogy was intentionally ridiculous. That was the point of it.

This game is still in beta, and they aren't going to change things and make an even BETTER game of it if they don't get feedback. Have some of the comments been a bit terse? Sure. But there's also often a pervasive tone from the devs that we're all stupid or wrong for disliking certain decisions, at least at the beginning of complaints. Do they often listen to us in the end? Of course, and I love that they do.

Obviously more and more of us were frustrated by what we feel to be an incredibly negative and very un-Glitch-like flavor for this feat. So far, no one's gotten super rude or attacked the devs, or anything like that. In fact, I think this has been a fairly civil response for how annoyed people seem to be.
Posted 60 days ago by railroadbaron Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @ railroadbaron
thanks for understanding my point :)

giving valid arguments to get things done the way we like to, doesn't mean we have to be rude to like a lot of frustrated people here are. art of discussion gets you in the same point and probably with the smile :)

  • As I wrote elsewhere the big problem with this Feat was that it tied gameplay to publicity and promotion of the company, which is the hallmark of ickiness in online marketing.

Actively trying to turn your players into salespeople is tacky and runs counter to the loyalty & respect that TS has garnered to-date. Making it a component of game-play is a huge, huge failure in understanding the nature of the player community here.

Make a blog or forum post reminding players of invitations and the importance of getting the word out? SURE.
Having the success of an in-game Feat depend on a huge number of invites being sent? NOPE.
Posted 60 days ago by Pascale Subscriber! | Permalink
  • So many posts on this deserve a Like or a +1, and I wish there was something like that here on Glitch's forums.

For the record, one of the people I invited last night got the invite this morning, a full 7 hours after it was sent. She immediately got mad at me for sending her an invite to an online game and now I am in the doghouse. I'm not inviting anyone else, even though I have 3 more invites available. Participating in a feat isn't worth getting my friends ticked off at me.

I think the absolute most telling part of this feat is that it hasn't gone anywhere. Look at how fast Feats 1 and 2 filled, and how not fast this one is going. TS, it's time to just end this feat early, write it off as a Bad Idea, issue an official Mea Culpa, and move on.
Posted 60 days ago by Eveshka Subscriber! | Permalink
  • What upsets me most about this feat is that asking for invites is completely counter to TS' mission. People play Glitch because they want to play Glitch. People send out invites because it's a cool game and they want other people to play a cool game with them. TS didn't make invites into a marketing scheme or part of their token economy - until now. I can understand membership drives as TS needs to support itself but a massive Farmville-esque feat just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. "Invite 5 more people and get the special cow!!" This is why I ditched Farmville and all other Zynga games because it was impossible to avoid the constant badgering to pester every other living person on the planet to play the game with you.

One of my selling points a bout Glitch is that it isn't a bug your friend type of game. Imagine if someone joined right now and got hit with this feat. What would they think?
Posted 59 days ago by Griselda Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I was under the (mistaken?) impression that feats were part of the long-awaited content for higher-level players, but so far, they have served to highlight the game's lack of content.  Things seem to have shifted toward the "Let's see if players can be replaced by trained monkeys!" side of game design.  The first feat was "stand still as much as possible," the second was "play the same tune over and over again," the third was "find this quoin over and over again," and the fourth was "click some tombstones," which makes the fifth, "Ask your friends to do this too!" seem even more ridiculous.

Re-launch is obviously imminent, so if we invite people to play now, they will technically be involved in beta, and may get the special item which only second-beta players get, if there is one.  That's all I can come up with in support of this feat, and it's weak.

As for the comparisons to Zynga games, if the shoe fits... ?  I've never played Facebook games, but after hearing so much criticism of them from other Glitch players, I was recently a bit shocked to see footage of FarmVille: a cute avatar approaches a tree, waters and harvests it, a little overhead progress bar fills... wow!  So I watched this, and starting around 1:48, it seemed even more familiar: craft things to feed to your animals or sell to other players, decorate your space with furniture, let your friends come over to help tend your gardens... yikes.

I think my biggest issue with that style of game is actually identified in the video: it's like running a simulated business.  It's what a lot of us do in real life in order to put food on the table, and while it might be amusing to do it as part of a game once in a while, for me, it quickly becomes a reminder that I should be getting back to work.  Glitch has the potential to be SO MUCH MORE than a grindy point-and-click session -- even the too-short and too-simplistic new puzzle quests have proved that -- and the feats seem like giant leaps in the wrong direction, and a sad sign that the game may never live up to its potential.

As for the complaints about complaints: I understand that a lot of players and staff don't like to see criticism of the game, but during this last gasp of the hopefully-last testing period, it would be a huge disservice to everyone (especially to all of the hard-working people at TS) if we were all to sit back and bite our tongues.  Yes, it's beta, and yes, part of being a beta tester is speaking your mind.  Chastising each other for critical thinking doesn't get us anywhere.

  • +1 LisaNH for this idea

I would not have been upset at all had the third feat been an in-game collaboration and once completed, TS had said "It's going to take us a day (or two, or three) to roll out the new bits. Please invite your friends as it will be SO MUCH AWESOMER with them here for it too! Plus, if we can get x number of new players by the time this rolls out, we're going to give you something super special extra bonusy!" Which, lets be honest, the super special extra bonusy bit could be exactly what we would have gotten either way, but I'd be much more apt to say "Hey friend! Something cool is getting added to this game I really enjoy. Come play it with me!" than to say "Oh, um, I get something in game if you join. I swear its not normally like this and one you weed thru the other newbies the community is super cool and welcoming. Sure there are going to be more griefers right now with an influx of people because of this promotion, but they'll fade out. Promise!"

Which is better advertisement in your opinion?

  • Ms. Beagle, I don't think the slowdown is a response to outrage, I think it's just inherent in the mechanism.  For people who aren't cheating, if they choose to participate they send out their initial (up to) five invites when they find out about the feat, and their further participation is dependent on those non-players deciding to sign up.  So participation is heavily weighted to the beginning of the feat.

The other three invites I sent out were to real people, members of my IRL D&D group, who will all either ignore the invites or bitterly curse my name for giving them another time sink. :-)
