EDITORIAL:A proposal in regards to planting trees.

An Open Letter to the Glitchen of Ur:

I have been paying close attention to the aftermath of the recent tree-poisoning incident and have come up with an idea. Every Glitch has the right (and responsibility) to plant and care for the trees from which they harvest materials. Therefore, I propose that a consensus-driven  Arborers' Guild be established to oversee the preservation of all Ur's tree populations, as well as acting as a resource for Glitchen who wish to learn more about how to plant and care for trees. The members of said Guild would be asked to help restore areas affected by Rook attacks and Raids to their previous state. Membership would be open to all Glitchen who wish to join.

What led me to write this, you ask? The simple answer is this: The fate of Ur is in our hands, and we owe it to ourselves and to all Glitchkind to work together in the imagining and building of this wonderful place we call home. Ur is what we make it. If we are to build a beautiful Ur then we MUST work together to make it happen.

Thoughts anyone?

Edit- changed "democratically-run" to "consensus-driven".  Thank you to Freddie for pointing this out.

  • Disagree.

How will this be any different from people killing the spice trees in Ix? You say it's a community based decision but community will still be based on a small group of players who will undoubtedly make decisions based on ease or personal whims. You would then be replacing a less organised group of tree killers with one more organised, yet the result is the same. I say every Glitch should be able to shape the world as they please without the shadow of a watchdog group. What we should be focusing on is removing griefers not Glitchen freedom.

  • How do you propose going about removing griefers????

  • I wonder when someone will form a Tree Assassin's Guild to poison the trees in out of the way places, or in the dead of night when no one's looking.

  • If the Spicers want all spice trees on Ix and the Gassers want all gas trees, then who's the griefer? The language of this debate is very interesting.

  • I would join a group called Scorched Ur-th who worked communally to smooth out the landscape by poisoning everything in sight.

  • @Plurp: Trying to find the one (there was at least one tree killer group) that was started durring beta now, but I can't remember the name.

  • "The aggravators were not at fault for poisoning or destroying or axing (wait, aren't these all the same thing?) trees. They were at fault for aggressively antidoting trees in order to disrupt regular, acceptable uses of tree poisoning."

I think it's safe to say that antidotes exist for the very purpose of disrupting the regular, acceptable use of tree poison. If Tiny Speck didn't want trees to be saved, they'd more than likely take antidote out of the equation, but at that point there would simply be no trees left to speak of due to a never-ending cycle of Plant, Poison, Repeat. Given that no one type of tree is more entitled to be in any given spot than another (setting aside suggestions set forth in naming, i.e. 'West Spice'), no one who is poisoning or curing a tree can possible be in the wrong. It's simply a matter of agreeing to disagree, as it were.

  • just a note: The Great Tree Debate has been going on since the beginning of Ur (or at least as I've been around). it fires up periodically and then dies down... perhaps search old threads adn see if you can find how/why it dies down?

  • The color scheme for part of Ix matches that of gas trees and the other half is named 'spice.'  Tonight on a walk through it, I noticed that there were clashing spice trees in part of the area with a color scheme to match the gas trees.  The island is divided clearly in half by color scheme, for goodness sakes.  One side is for gas trees and the other for spice trees.

This is a conflict for conflict's sake.  The only way it will be resolved is for the rest of us to stop paying attention to the trolls on each side (the adamant spice and adamant gas tree advocates) and move on.  It almost seems like both 'sides' are in league to keep this big troll fest simmering as much as they can.  Grow up.

  • Parrow, regardless of what you consider to be a clear and evident color scheme on the island of Ix, it cannot be stressed enough that Glitch is a game intended to be shaped by the community.  There is no "spice land" and there's not "gas land".  To believe that the game developers wanted a specific tree in a specific spot and we should all just resign ourselves to the fact that nothing can or should be changed is to not understand Glitch for what it is.

  • you know I have to say, this is awesome.  Before I started playing the game I read stuff about a sandbox game and how they wanted to see a player driven experience, having and impact on the world.  I have to say I thought it was some pr doublespeak its a browser game of streets, but after reading this, I see exactly what they meant.  Awesome, simply awesome!

  • I think I'm going to go ahead and break character to get this off my chest:

This post wasn't intended to incite bickering or a "tree war". Rather, it was intended to be an in-character thread for proposing and refining ideas from tree huggers and haters alike. I'm going to go ahead and ask that this this be put to rest for the sake of preserving the community we've got going. To those who keep saying that it's all part of the game - Agreed, and I don't believe it would have been an issue had I not also witnessed players being harassed/trolled in a manner that's not part of this game's feel and style. It just didn't belong. Harmless pranks and mischief while staying in character = part of Glitch. Tree poisoning/antidoting = part of Glitch. Tossing sneezing powder at random players = part of Glitch. Splanking in moderation = part of Glitch. Replanting = part of Glitch.  Working together to help each other = yep, you guessed it - Glitch.

Verbally abusing players and baiting them until they curse at you ,then reporting them = not Glitch.  Multiple players ganging up on and splanking another player to Hell = just plain mean.

That having been said, this thread has brought out one of the best aspects of this community - respect. Everyone who's posted here has brought their ideas and opinions to the table and we've been able to discuss them without resorting to insults, name-calling, and fighting. I am incredibly proud to be part of the Glitch community. I say we put this behind us and work on more new ideas. Who's with me ?
