Angry Glitchen AKA Eat an orange, fall like a ferret and post your funny video...

So many angry peeps around, everywhere... In Global Chat, in forums...

Is it Winter? Lack of sun? The unlaunch? The recession? Credit cards maxed out? New rules about alts, keys and houses? Prices of herbs? Taking too long to learn the new skills?

What is it? What can it be?

(just wondering while I eat an orange)

  • Welcome to the internet. There's always angry people everywhere.

  • Its the Bah Humbug time of year. :(

Honestly, not sure. Everyone does seem very on edge....I am even guilty of it.  I am learning to just not respond and block. Not worth getting upset over.

  • Nah, I'm not upset. It just amazes me how much anger people can have (and display).

    I love you, Innie.

  • I just press 2 alot so people can see how ANGRY I am.

  • I have a pumpkin on my head so when I press 2 my pumpkin is the one that gets angry not me. Hope no one misunderstands if you see me.

  • Vinchon, you have funny replies to forum posts...

But I was more wondering about the way Glitchen express themselves about stuff. Not about how they look.

Meaning, if I see your pumpkin making an angry face, doesn't really bother me. The other just enough to make me wonder.

  • I'm with Innie - I find that I'm cranky lately and have to make a particular effort to slow down, take a deep breath, remind myself it's just a game, and not snap at other Glitches.

*hugs* to all the stressed out Glitches.

I've felt angsty too. A weird tension. I think we're just changing and growing so fast right now it's hard to find or maintain a place in it all. It will get better. It will.

  • It's a period of uncertainty. There are a lot of things changing - rules, the game itself (helloooooo, beta!), and in an effort to cope with that uncertainty, people find stuff they can discuss and be RIGHT about, and it's cathartic to be able to take it out on people who are totally WRONG.

The bottom line is that we don't know what is going to happen until it happens, but we know that stuff is happening somewhere behind the scenes. It's like a shadow looming over Glitch and it creeps up into everyone's psyche. We cannot control those outcomes or predict what will happen.

That's why we have uncharacteristically divisive threads, (with topics like rape, for instance), where the issue is murky enough in its context to actually prompt a debate, but controllable in that we understand the issue, we KNOW things about what's being discussed, and we can make judgements, (rape is WRONG, no matter what, always, and if you say otherwise YOU ARE WRONG). Add the occasional troll to the mix, and you've got the perfect recipe for angst-y rabble rousin'

It isn't necessarily productive, appropriate, or nice, but it's kind of like a weird group therapy. For the people who just get more irritated by it, take a step back. Play minecraft for a week or two (or some other fun game that isn't going through this kind of tension at the moment), and come back in a little while after this has died down a bit.

In other news, for people looking for some light-hearted romping, I will be starting up splank fights again in the near future. For the very reasons described here, they have been on hiatus because the mood just hasn't been right.
Posted 12 months ago by Xev Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Add to that the totally understandable and quite desireable fact that people CARE about this game and this community and every disagreement turns into a powder keg of wildly flung accusations, assumptions, and hurt feelings...

I appreciate reasoned debate and interesting discussion (even when people are clearly WRONG ;-) ), but yikes... I could sure do with a lot less DRAAAAAMAAAAAAAA than has been in the forums as of late.
Posted 12 months ago by EnnuiStreet Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It's not reasoned debate. At all.
Posted 12 months ago by Xev Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Lately? No, it hasn't been, at all. I totally agree with you, and I had JUST gotten back into reading/posting a little more from the last time I stepped back and took a break, so this is pretty frustrating.

Not really! Kidding. I just became a subscriber so that seems pretty thrilling actually.

I'm chiming in mostly to say how much I love this phrase. Thank you Ms. Sneezelips! Maybe this is what I should do whenever I get cranky? "I'm sorry - I have to lie here like a ferret until I'm ready to engage with the world in a peaceful manner." Its like a time out - but you get to pretend to be a ferret!

  • I think that discussions, especially on the forums feel particularly important to folks who are really involved with the game because we know for a fact that the TS staff is actively listening. We see them respond to concerns and questions in threads, and we see some of the ideas and suggestions lead to new or changed features. So that creates worry that ideas that run counter to your style of play might seem popular enough among other players that they could be implemented. With the process of going back to Beta, that creates even more uncertainty about how both the game and the community are going to change, and whether this will still be a good fit for any particular player. That kind of worry often comes out as anger in responding to other peoples' ideas. It's no use to say it's "just a game". When people are spending hours of their scarce leisure time here, it's obviously something they value.

  • I saw a lot of anger today in Ix - it was a spice/gas skirmish.  These things are really no big deal, and money sinks even more now than before.  It really became a war of who could buy up all the poisons and antidotes first, which really changes the whole gas/spice dynamic.  It was interesting to watch, but I was really put off by the people who were getting hysterical about it.  People who were fighting the good fight - yeah, that was fun to watch!

  • Glitch is growing, and it seems that we've entered the awkward teenage years.  Our voices are changing, our emotions are all over the place and we have hair in places in which we previously had none.  What I mean to say is- I chalk it up to growing pains and have faith that it'll pass.  There are some lovely people around and I hope that they'll all stick around for Glitch's college years and beyond into adulthood.  I can't wait until I can have Glitch Mortgages and Glitch Prostate Exams!

  • What Xev said and what I posted yesterday in the Sanity Check! thread.

Change & uncertainty create anxiety. Individually, we may cope with change fairly well, but we're also a part of a group and groups feed off of each other. This is true with good things and bad things. Right now, with all the anxiety about, we react a bit more quickly and strongly to things. This is why folks are responding to topics and posts that they might usually ignore. And a desire to have some sort of control makes us more willing to express our opinions (and a bit more adamant when we do). It's all perfectly natural and, in small amounts, can even be healthy (as Xev said... "group therapy").

Things will mellow out soon enough, but until they do, we should all try to be just a touch more understanding with each other than we would normally be. This is especially true in-game... share smiles, give folks random things, be a bit silly. The more we see & do that sort of stuff, the easier it will be for us to cope with the forum & chat stress. The better we cope with it, the more quickly it will evaporate. But remember (this is as much for me as for anyone), we all have different time tables on how we deal with things, so just because you're feeling alright with everything doesn't mean that the poster who just made some extreme statement is. Telling them to chill won't help, but being understanding (and not inflaming the issue!) will.

  • Ditto on the Glitch prostate exam.

  • Yes, and I loved that post, Vera.

@Mereret - I think the issue is less to do with the legitimate threads and discussions on rules and initiatives, and more to do with the semi- (mostly un-) related drama llama.

I don't think anyone here is saying that concern and questions around rules and policies are unimportant or somehow trivial. I think they're very important. However, there is a level of absurdity surrounding a lot of this stuff, as there's a sort of angsty hysteria infecting the forums.

Objectively, for the people not caught up in it, it is ridiculous. Why are people SO upset about the idea of "inactive" players having their houses taken away? Housing as a concept is changing completely in the next few months. Plus, the subject has been brought up numerous times in the past, and thoroughly obliterated through reasoned debate... countless times.

But, for the people who are caught up in the fact that we don't know for sure what's going to happen, it's scary. And yes, you're absolutely right, people are investing huge amounts of time in this game. The idea that stuff could change dramatically is unsettling to a lot of people, as Glitch, for many, is an escape from the ugliness and uncertainty of real life. It's predictable to the point of even being dull.

I trust TS to develop Glitch organically and reasonably; to meet the needs and demands of the community in a way that is fair and representative of the group as a whole. I agree that it's important to make points and be heard in the forums, but after a certain point, it gets absurd. As we figure out how we as a community are going to roll, we'll hit some awkward points, exactly as Sloppy Ketchup said.

The brits said it best during World War II, (admittedly a far more scary and unpredictable time than the ups and downs of Glitch, but still applicable): "Keep Calm and Carry On"

So let's. Instead of talking about how screwy things are, let's start getting back to normal. What normal is depends on what we want it to be. It's not easy, we'll have to adapt, but that's life. We've had our collective freak out. Now it's time for a deep breath and a straightening up. Whether you go with Vera's approach - an extra smile, a little extra kindness, or just commit to not letting the little things trouble you, let's.

I for one have never wavered in my commitment to the irreverent and silly. Join me in my light-hearted tom-foolery.

  • There are areas of greater and lesser insanity.  And that means there are zones of madness, mostly focused at the moment around herbs and new skills.  Do what some of us are doing:  sit out those areas of the game and find something else you enjoy in-world to do instead.  I moved up to one of the new cave houses in Siberia/Aranna and am having a great time meeting new neighbors.  It's as far away from the bog worlds as is glitchly possible and the folks here are nice.

  • Oh I did something else Parrow! I made up a bunch of Awesome Stews and Carrot Margaritas and went to all the herb gardens and gave them out. Show some kindness people! There is no reason to be rude, nasty and be a thief... it only gives you grief back and gives you less friends.

May you give kindness and goodness. May you reap well with your herbs, ore, harvests, and farming. The giants love us... please show the giants we are worthy of their love with giving back kindness and smiles. Be giving and caring and I promise you will be rewarded for doing so!

  • @Parrow: Bog folks are nice too, I promise!

Like Casombra, I have purposely been going to the community herb gardens lately.  I love to hand out free herbs there.  Last night we have so much fun with an "herb festival," a celebration with food and potions.  We had a buffet and a rainbow to jump all over.  It was fantastic.  By the end of it, everyone had gone from individualized herb growing to a more cooperative and sharing effort.

My point?  I guess I just want to agree with what Casombra says.  <3

  • the main issue is with incredibly oversensitive players who mistook an online flash game for an actual life. not saying they don't have a life, but the moral bombardment from "nice" players when anyone does something they don't like is way over the top. if something is deemed offensive, report them, don't turn it into a forum/global drama.
Posted 12 months ago by psibertus Subscriber! | Permalink
  • We are somewhat a self-policing community, psibertus, and I even get the feeling that the 'people in charge' prefer for it to be that way.  There is a strong player community here in this game.  We don't just refer to a rule sheet and then 'report' infractions to a faceless administration who takes care of everything for us.
Posted 12 months ago by Parrow Gnolle Subscriber! | Permalink
  • That being said, the community guidelines specifically say not to "call out" other players on the forums. Public shaming and drama (creating multiple threads about the same topic) IS pretty ridiculous and inappropriate.

So, in conclusion, I agree and disagree with both of you all at the same time.

One day, we shall all walk the path of the dinosaur.
