Heat maps!

I'd love to see a heat map of the world showing different types of activity in each area (mining, scraping, most travelled routes, etc.). With perty colors.

Primarily, I'm a nerd.

But in addition, it would be nice to be able to use this map in real time to find the best possible area for a given resource (rocks, durrr).

I realize the second part might be pushing it performance-wise (and some will say fun-wise, I'm sure), as it would have to be a heat map of the most recent 5 minutes or so to be useful.

  • While the data-head in me finds this really interesting, I am not sure the purpose. The dynamic nature (rocks mined away, trees dying, barnacles coming and going in minutes) makes me think we'd have a hard time to track. Alhough I'd like a map of the level one players. heh A related idea, a Harry Potter Marauders Map like feature where you can track where your friends are.

  • marauder map would be really awesome, maybe a stalk feature.

A map of people would be good to get areas that were not picked dry, like in the mines. Also a good way to determine where to go if you do not want lag.

  • I suppose that I was envisioning getting some extra value out of the data that is behind Glitch, not unlike the idea you expressed above.

Being able to pivot on the data that is available to me (or the game) is an incredibly powerful thing. Patterns, trends, activity, etc. would be pretty sweet to look at from different data angles and perspectives, possibly with time as another variable and reference point.

A data engine that provides me with the ability to look at a heat map (or whatever) to find where metal rocks might be, would be just as valuable as you using that same map/data to look for a friend that is online to go and have a chat with. Having the tools to manipulate and interpret the common data becomes the empowering (or limiting) factor.

I pray (and strongly suspect) that the minds behind this game will utilize this very data for good, and not evil...ESPECIALLY as the game scales out and resource/location distribution becomes more critical.

It'd just be nice to have this data exposed to all us simpletons..in a non API/"need to write an application" sort of way.

Hence, heat map. In a very pivotable...possibly renamable way.
