What Are You Unlearning Next?

With the introduction of Unlearning I find myself on the long, long trek to finally complete the last of the Better Learning skills. Then it's on to Unlearning 1 and after that I can start to root out the brain clogging junk I never use!

What skills are you Unlearning or planning to get rid of? The first area I plan to clear out is the whole drinks bit- blending and the cocktails skills. When I need a mood boost I sniff dairy products (*ahem*).

The new Tincturing skills were an eye opener for me. I wanted them, but it was gonna take days and days to attain hours of new learning because of the junk I never should have learned in the first place. So I'm going to fix things up by using Unlearning (when I finally get the chance- finishing B.L. is taking days and days)

Unlearning is a great feature. It allows old fools like me who have tended too much toward generalism the opportunity to rejuvenate our skill trees. Trying to "know everything" here in Ur, just as in real life, bogs you down.

I very much hope that the devs will keep introducing new special and timely skills to the tree- to reward the agile specialists over the "know everything" completionists by allowing them to be up and running with new skills in hours that will take the completionists days to learn. The design of this game is really really smart and the drive for us all to specialize could turn out to be fun.

What are you going to Unlearn? How are you specializing? What kind of glitch are you growing up to be?

  • Bog Specialization. Who needs that anyways? :[ There are probably others I should unlearn, but I don't wanna!

  • I'm clearing out as much cooking as I can (while still being able to retain drinks). It's boring to me, and I can get food elsewhere. I might also ditch AK, since I rarely use animal products other than milk; but I haven't decided yet. I'm streamlining my skills to encompass block- and fuel-making, alchemy, mining, herbalism, and potions.

  • unlearned martian imagination, unlearning transcendental radiation, will unlearn levitation, would unlearn element handling, alchemy, admixing, smelting and refining if it wasn't needed for botany.

  • I have no plans to ever use Unlearning.  If both the skill tree and the time to learn skills triple, I *might* consider it.  Right now, all that skills cost me is time, which I have plenty to spare in a game that lets me learn offline.

One of the things I like about Glitch, is that I don't have some arbitrary character class, like farmer or alchemist, that means that I can't learn herd keeping if I already learned engineering.  It's good that I can buy things grown or crafted by other players, but I usually actually prefer to be able to make anything I need by myself, without being dependent on the good will or skills of other users.  That given, SnapShotting is going to remain on the bottom of my ToDo list for a reeeeaaaaallly long time.

  • @ Tanit

Bog Specialisation is a prerequesite for Herbalism, and Herbalism just got exciting again for a lot of people because of Tincturing and Potion Making.

You cannot unlearn anything that is needed for anything else that you want to keep.

    @ topic

... Which makes unlearning for me quite difficult, because lots of stuff is connected to each other.

Maybe I might unlearn Animal Husbandry. Apart from that, nothing really comes to mind, because I am using almost everything else rather frequently, and I was wise enough to realize quite early not to let myself being dragged down with too many lowlevel, fast-to-learn skills (I never learn Gassification and Fruit Changing, for example).

I have around 80 skills and the time to learn Potion Making 2 was around 5 days. That's still acceptable for me. I fear the day, when the will unleash "a whole new bunch of skills" which all deal with the upgradible houses, as announced. I certainly want to upgrade my house, so I almost certainly will want to learn those skills. I don't know if I have the patience to wait 10 days for a new skill, though.

  • Bureaucratic Arts I, if you're not doing Street Projects and isn't going to upgrade to BA II you should unlearn BA I.
Posted 12 months ago by Boom and Bust Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I've already unlearned my herdkeeping and remote herdkeeping. With so many animals out on the streets, I can easily get my grain, milk, and meat outside of my home. I may not because to get the las AK skill, but hey AK6 is better than nothing. I also took of Eyeballery since I pretty much NEVER used it anyways.

Now, I'll probably take off my Croppery skills. As a Loyal Herbalist, I have no use for the skill, nor do I want to trek all the way to Community Gardens just to grow crops that someone else is going to take when I'm away.

  • I don't plan on unlearning anything. Most of the things I enjoy doing require a variety of skills. And I enjoy mixing things up as I go along. One day I might mine for hours, the next cook, the next squeeze chickens. This game is boring to me without being able to do everything.

I had an alt for a few weeks that I used to learn the skills that my main didn't have. Things like herbalism and tinkering, I found that even those skills required more skills to really make the most of it. You can't really craft things with tinkering unless you can mine, or make a lot of currants to buy materials from the auction house. I don't like using the auction house because I feel the prices of raw materials are slightly outrageous, especially when you can take a few minutes to get the stuff yourself. And considering the new potion making skill requires things like bubbles, and krazy salts (alchemical skill).

Screw unlearning, I'd rather be a Renaissance Man.

  • Unlearned both Bureaucratic Arts. After I got my subway / house pass, I felt they were a bit lackluster, especially BA 2. However I strongly feel BA 3 will be somehow related to house customizations soon :)

Also unlearned all meditation related skills, except the first one as it's a prereq for Better Learning. For me it wasn't worth the time penalty for a measly 20 - 30 energy gain.

Unlearned all 30 min skills such as Bubble tuning and Gas changing, but I'll learn those again once I'm done with the more lengthier skills. Guess because all four "30 min" skills take so little time to re-learn, getting rid of them and re-learning them later could prove a viable strategy to cut out time on any new shiny skills we might get.

Depending on what the staff will decide regarding bog houses and alt handling, I might also unlearn all herbalism / alchemy related stuff.

  • I'm not going to unlearn, some recipes require all type of ingredients and I'm not willing to pay a extremely high price on the auctions. After completing some achievements, I haven't use much certain skills, but I prefer to keep them, just in case.

  • I doubt i'll ever get to unlearn anything as I don't have bl5. In fact new skills of any sort are now a major undertaking. It's kind of a trap that you can't get out of. :(

You might want to reconsider unlearning croppery if you plant herbs.

    See here:

    http://www.glitch.com/forum/bugs/13369/

Until there hasn't been any official answer if this is intended or not, I would keep croppery. 3 herbs instead of 2 does make a difference.
Posted 12 months ago by Louis Louisson Subscriber! | Permalink
  • No current plans to unlearn anything for the present moment, though I might later down the line. I like having options.

Also, you only need Croppery 1 to unlock the 3 herbs instead of 2. I probably won't bother with higher levels, at least for now (depends on if I decide to install crop gardens in my custom  house once those roll around, or not).

  • I'd unlearn Unlearning if I had learned it but I haven't learned it yet so there will be no unlearning of Unlearning 1, Unlearning 2, or Unlearning 3. I did I mention I was learning tincturing? That's some good learning.
Posted 12 months ago by BlueZed Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Thanks, Louis. I guess I'll be keeping it around then :)
Posted 12 months ago by Sweetum Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Nope. No unlearning for me. I use most of my skills and seeing how some of them might suddenly become indispensable, I'll suck it up and suffer the penalty for new skills.
Posted 12 months ago by Epilady Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Unlearning the herbs and jellisac stuff, as i don't live in the bogs.   I am slowly reconsidering my farming/AK background as food is sooo plentiful in the game.   Other than those first three I am learning the other unlearning skills so I can be more nimble in adjusting my character to the next content rollout.

I do not believe that "I want to know everything" is going to be a viable option in the future.   You might theoretically do it, but the options that will be opened up by making specific choices will become more and more compelling.

  • I still don't know what the different 'brown' skills specialize in. Croppery, Soil, and Gardening. So...crops, trees, ?? Which one exactly pertains to herbs? I took them all hoping to increase my herb yield, but no go. I'd probably unlearn whichever one is for crops, because I don't grow 'em. Also, ALL of the cooking skills. Too complicated and Gawd knows I cook enough in real life, I certainly don't want to do it in Ur. Next, the Giants will ask me to wash the dishes, too! The problem is that noobs like me can't figure out what the skills are going to be used for, so we take a bit of everything. Or maybe that was just me, I don't have prior experience in online RPGs so was probably at a disadvantage.
Edit: Ah, should have read your post 1st Louis, thanks!

  • I don't mind the time penalty at all because "eventually" I'll be done with them anyways. Since learning skills requires virtually no effort, just waiting, I can carry on with everything else in life while these skills are learned. Even if eventually a skill takes 50 days as a result of time penalties, you can speed it up with favor points to 25 days.

  • I'm using Unlearning to get rid of a couple of the fast-learning early skills so I can save a couple of days on the super long skills I have! I'd rather take 10 hrs to learn 4 skills than 12 days for Potionmaking 2.

(Then I'm going to relearn those 4 skills.)

  • I've already got most of the skills and it doesn't make sense to unlearn any if them at this point! Why would I not want to be able to do something? If I want a cocktail I can shake one up! If I need some food I can cook it and make sauce...unlearning seems pointless to me

  • I'm patient and don't mind the wait for new skills.  I'm not planning on unlearning skills any time soon.

  • Unlearning is a poorly thought out band-aid solution to a terrible game mechanic. Instead of introducing Unlearning, they should have removed Better Learning altogether, and either gotten rid of the the inflated time it takes to learn based on the number of skills you know or reduced it severely. It doesn't add fun to the game and therefor doesn't need to exist.
Posted 12 months ago by Black Francis Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Black Francis it's not supposed to add fun to the game, it's supposed to encourage specialization. At least, this is how I understand it. Last I checked they've planned out a total of 120 skills, and the game launched with 90 or so, so there are still several skill trees on the way. The idea seems to be for us to pick and choose what interests us the most, and rely on others for help with what we don't want to learn. You can still choose to learn all the skills if you really want, but it'll take you time.

ETA: I'll probably unlearn cooking, since I never ever use it.

  • Unfortunately, I have 17 days left to finish Mining V, at which point I can begin unlearning my Mining skill tree.  It was the last thing I was learning, and you have to finish it completely before you can unlearn it.  *sigh*

    I am unlearning nothing! Nothing!

  • It's great that everybody has interesting opinions to add to the thread.  My character has a very congested brain, as I posted initially, and I am still attaining Better Learning V so that I can learn Unlearning and start stripping away some of my skills.  I got a bad start that I'm still recovering from because when I first started playing I used the greasemonkey script and queued up everything I could for fast offline learning.  I'm sure I am not the only person made that mistake.

Glitches who say they are not going to do Unlearning or use the skill state that they are comfortable taking a long time to learn further skills.  That's fine, we all have different approaches to how we want to play.  I will find it interesting if the devs push things further.  New skills can be rolled out in a way that penalizes generalists who want to know everything.   Those who strip back their skill tree will be able to attain new skills fast and be one of the first glitches to know them.

The devs want to encourage specialized skills, it will be interesting to see if there are new twists in the future with skill training to encourage this.  Mutually exclusive skills could be rolled out, etc.  It could lead to bands and cooperatives where some glitches in a group learn complimentary skill sets to work together.  It's an interesting twist and I think just the kind of thing they have in mind for us.

  • I'm going to unlearn penpersonship and eyeballery I, probably Transcendental Radiation too. It's made me rethink what skills I'm going to pursue next and what ones I might not bother with at all.

  • I will definitely use the unlearning, I started about a month ago & thought it was important to learn alot of skills, I am also attaining the Better Learning V (4 days left)... I want to learn skills that I enjoy...

  • But what about teleport scripts Rosie?! They give you basically unlimited teleport points, if you have the bag space for them :)

  • I will say that it's been interesting what skills everyone finds useful and useless. Like I said, I pretty much do a little of everything. I'm kinda hesitant to start unlearning at this moment actually.

Blockmaking and Fuelmaking, skills I don't have as much use for right now, might come in handy with custom housing. I might consider unlearning the higher levels of Mining, except that I'd hate it if I saw a rock I happened to feel like and it took forever.

I might consider unlearning the cooking skills, except that one of my potion recipes uses a sauce, and I enjoy crafting everything from base materials. Plus I actually like cooking, it seems.

In short, for everything that I might consider unlearning, I've already got a reason not to unlearn it. The things low on my priority list (Bureaucracy and Croppery 2+), I already left to last and might never learn.

It's interesting, given how much use I get out of those skills, to see Transcendental Radiation, Eyeballery, and Penpersonship on lists of skills people're ditching. Penpersonship I use less than the others, but it's pretty much indisposable the few times I do use it. But that's one of the cool things about this game, how many different playstyles it can accommodate.

In the end, I think I'll only start unlearning if at some time Tiny Speck declares the skill tree completely finished. Then I can look at what interdependences there are and plan out what to ditch. Even then, I might still have too much of an attachment to all of my skills to ditch them.

  • I actually cleared out the entire Animal Kinship branch.  Since the animals are crucial to cooking meals, and I have never learned a cooking skill, I never saw the need for cooking from the very start.

Why would one accumulate food items to gain favor with giants, when you can just use the gardening and mining skills to collect music blocks, gems and enough rocks to crush some EHSP?  Utilizing all gardening, animal and mining skills along with other skills can spread yourself thin, so this is where Unlearning makes sense.

Interdependency, rather than being the "Renaissance Man" makes a lot of sense, as it allows for socialization, too.

I am always looking for specialists to form business relationships with, so if I need Awesome Stews, I make deals with Chef Glitches and shift my focus on mining and gardening even more.  Trying to do everything is inefficient and so exhausting, it takes a big bite of your timeshare, so I am strongly in favor of unlearning and specialization.  In time, more of us will.

If you prefer to gather all the skills and slowly crawl inch by inch toward Mining V (hypothetical speaking) for a month, go ahead and try to do just that, it would be terrible to hear about learning time stretching to many months as the skill tree grows.  Then trying to unlearn the skills that you don't want to focus on anymore becomes a chore.

  • It's interesting to see this thread bumped, because I just a short while ago finally completed Unlearning I.  I've unlearned the bubble tuning, gas, and fruit changing skills.  Now that I trimmed down the learning time a little I am going full bore on Unlearning 2, which I will have in 12 hours now thanks to EHSP and a lot of favor from the Giants.  Then I am Unlearning the entire Drink branch, Mixing and Blending.  My most used skills right now are grilling and cooking, heavily supplemented by Remote Herd-keeping, of course.  I make a lot of cheese type sandwiches.

I'm wavering on Mining.  I have not mined for a week now, but it was sooo hard learning Mining 4 that it would feel weird to just throw it away.  Probably all that Piety and Meditation stuff could go instead.  When I've done a bunch more Unlearning, I am going to go try somethings with that new fangled tincturing stuff.  It's really weird that unlearning stuff has been my main Skill-oriented goal since the last major update to the skills tree.  I'm an Unskills kinda glitch lately I guess.

As to skill dependencies.  Well, being agile is probably a worthwhile approach.  In the case of some of the 'little' things I've so far unlearned, I can pick them up again anytime, and keeping my brain 'light' and non-congested will make it easier to learn more as needed.  Furthermore, dependencies are not arbitrarily defined.  If there are new skills introduced in the future that I will really really want, they will probably be related to the specialties that I am already focused on.
