Acconts (in romana)

Sa stie toti romanii care joaca glitch...
Nici odata sa nu iti creezi doua conturi in acelasi timp.

  • Okay, here's what happened: My Romanian friends had some questions about the game. That's my great-grandparents' country of origin*, and although I haven't heard the language spoken since I was a kid, I understand a bit. I felt bad that my Romanian friends above weren't getting answers, so I attempted to make a run at the problem. Unfortunately, I found myself in over my head faster than I had anticipated.

I don't know if I helped -- or didn't. But it looks like I made some new friends, and that's all that ultimately really matters for everyone involved.

*Yes, as many of you know, my great-grandparents were Romani (Gypsy), which is a different thing entirely. I understand that language much better.

  • If you don't have more than one character in the world at the same time, and don't transfer anything between those characters, you should be just fine.

  • How could you possibly say such a thing? English is not the only language in the world, and isn't even the most widely used language in the world. Stop being so small, and making all of us English speakers look like jerks.
Posted 86 days ago by Kristen Marie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Before you all gang-pile on daniel, that is a common rule at many sites, so it is not like he is making a WTF-level suggestion.

I am not saying it is right for Glitch (it feels like an un-Glitchy rule, personally), but it should be taken in context.
Posted 86 days ago by Meromorphic Subscriber! | Permalink
  • My experience is admittedly a tad out of date, but I never saw any rules that said "keep other languages out of here."  I saw subforums for different languages but I feel like that's different from a complete "English-only" rule.  But as I said, I don't know the way things are now.

But In ANY case the appropriate thing to do would be to post it in the ideas forum.  I have no idea about daniel5457's thoughts or motivations but in the absence of any other info besides that one sentence he posted, coming into a place where people are not speaking English and saying there needs to be a rule against this is very rude.

  • I'm sorry if I offended anyone. This is an english game. Imagine if the forums have 1000 different languages spoken. You know Google translate is not 100% accurate and it doesn't have every language. Sorry I said that in a way that sounded rude.

  • To paraphrase:

If you can't stand the civility, get out of the forums.

  • Aw, daniel, how awesome.  Seems like too few people know how to apologize nowadays.

    *emo bear high-fives you*
Posted 86 days ago by diaveborn ♥ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Actually, "Sorry I said that in a way that sounded rude" isn't exactly an apology, when people were objecting to the substance of what he said, not the way he said it.

Just for the record, I'd like to see all the languages, and would prefer the rule to be "please post in your native language first and see if there are people that speak it". Even when I have no idea what's being said, it's fun to know that people from all over the world are talking about Glitch.

Also just for the record, I wouldn't spend time on forums that had an English-only rule, especially if they were forums for a game with a global context.

Really not sure what would be so terrible about some posts being in different languages than English, even if Google wasn't great at translating them.

  • I do understand, SchWM.  I don't agree with the substance of what was said.  But I also think recognizing  that you could have said something in a better way when you came across as offensive is a very good start.

  • I guess it's just netiquette: it's more polite to use a language most/all other players understand. It also makes it easier for mods/admins to keep an eye on things. That being said, there is no "English only" rule on Glitch that I could find, and I think that's a good thing - it's okay for players whose first language is not English to be able to post a cry for help in their native language, in hopes that someone who also speaks it will be able to come to the rescue. I do however believe it's good form to post the translation of what you posted, or at least a summary of it, for the benefit of those players who do not speak your language of choice.

(As a brief aside, I also think the better your English, the more you will enjoy this game. All those puns and in-jokes that crop up all over the place, making you giggle in appreciation or cringe in mock horror! But I digress.)

Now, as a reply to the OP:

When signing up for a game, it is always a good idea to read the Terms of Service - even though the phrasing you'll find there might put you off -, and the Community Guidelines, or whatever they may be called on that particular game. If you don't understand the language, use a translator or ask a friend to translate them for you. Doing so will save you from later surprises. In this specific case, doing so would have allowed you to see that one person may not play on multiple accounts at the same time. (This is perfectly normal, too - there's no reason to play simultaneously on two accounts unless you aim to gain unfair advantage, and it's a policy you will find on most MMOs that do not outlaw multiple accounts entirely.) And then there would have been no need for this thread. :)

So it is indeed against the rules to play on more than one account at the same time (which was the main gist of the initial post), but you may own more than one account, as long as you do not use them for cheating in some way. There are players with secondary accounts - these are called "alts" -, which are used for experimenting different ways of playing the game. But it is not likely that it will ever be possible to play on more than one account at the same time (which the OP also mentioned), nor is it necessary or desirable.

    In Romanian, now:

  • I love seeing other languages too.  I love language (even if I'm afraid to speak).  While I don't mind non-english in the forums, I'm not a fan of it in chatrooms, since chat goes by so fast it's hard to follow a conversation or translation that might be going on at the same time and completely isolates me from any conversation I may have been having or following.  That's why many chatrooms have different rooms for different languages.

That being said, yes, there are a lot of websites/forums/chatrooms that have English only rules, even if they have a international userbase.  This is for at least a couple reasons that I have dealt with first hand.  A lot of webhosts (especially free ones) have an English only rule, so websites must obey that if they use the hosting.  Another reason I've also had to deal with is legalities.  Anymore, you look around and no matter how many disclaimers are on a website, a webmaster can and will be held responsible for all content on their site, including the forum.  It is simply easier (especially on a small forum with webmaster only moderation or with only a few close friends) to keep track of content, spam, potential illegal activity, abuse, etc if it's all in a language that you know.

So there is no reason to attack anyone here for stating his opinion, the concept of English only is not a "WTF" thing (as he said, he didn't mean to be rude and IMHO he didn't come off as rude at all, just stating an opinion that others apparently didn't agree with and took offense).  It's a completely understandable and common position to take in the world of forum management.  Just not one that I'd like to see happen in these forums if it's not necessary.  Diversity is awesome to see ^_^

What I would like to see though, is people who (as the OP did, thank you ^_^) say what language they are speaking/typing in.  Sometimes because of dialect, poor spelling/grammar or whatever, translation websites often have a hard time auto detecting (or anyone remember when they didn't auto detect).  Having to paste in text into a translator and then go through every language that looks remotely possible (which is hard if you don't even recognize it) is a bit much to ask of anyone.  Or as Flapmouse suggests, provide your own translation, even if it is only a web generated one.  A poor google translation in the proper language is more accurate than a translation based on a wild guess.

And thank you, Flapmouse, for your answer.  I was having a difficult time understanding what the actual question was we were trying to answer.

  • I speak two languages, and I have been raised to believe it is just plain rude to speak in a language most/all people around you do not understand, if you know the local language(!), ergo, if I am in the UK, or the US, I speak English ~unless I want to tell my sister, that the platinum blonde bombshell ahead of us has spinach in her teeth... and I think that is where one bone of contention lies, not understanding puts you at a disadvantage, and, being human, you will be suspicious not just of what was said, but also of the person saying it (and, in my example, rightly so).
The OP has clearly stated in the title, that this is a non-English thread, so I respect that and stay out of it, it is TS's job to monitor, and not for me to worry about. The only time this language barrier would concern me, is if I had a dispute with someone, whose name I can't read, let alone write, and this concern is not limited to foreign language/alphabets, but it includes names created by using symbols/images etc.

  • Also, I think that another thing should be taken into account: The fact that someone understands a language doesn't mean that he/she can also speak it. So it is possible that someone playing the game understands it because he/she can understand English, but cannot actually form a sentence in this language. And I think that there have been examples of this in Live Help in the past. I specifically remember someone speaking in Japanese who was trying to finish the ghosts quest and was asking about that.

  • I teach a lot of English Language Learners and for the record, it takes about 1-2 years to become fluent at speaking a new language (particularly English) aloud, but it takes about 6 years to become fluent at writing that language. So have some patience with people who feel more comfortable writing their questions in their native language, or who  express themselves in English that may not be grammatically correct.

Personally I like seeing different languages in the forums, and I don't NEED to read and comment on every thread. If it's in a language I can't read, I skip it, or use Google Translator to understand the gist of what it's about.
Posted 85 days ago by Lynnt Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The reason many forums have "(language) only" rules is because their moderators can't effectively maintain the other home forum rules if they can't understand what's being said.  Machine translations have come a long way, but they're often insufficient when dealing with heavily idiomatic languages or ones with extensive or diverse vocabularies.  (Machine translations are mostly crowd-sourced, by the by -- Google Translate is powered by people correcting the initial translations and having them refined this way over time.)
