Magic tuesday - foxes, sloths, cabinets, oh my!

i.imgur.com/7mU5s.png

I hope you've all brushed up on your fox brushing (get it??), because foxes have finally been discovered in Ur. Time to get some fiber and turn it into cloth with the spindle and loomer; grab them from your local hardware or animal goods vendor.

If foxes aren't up your alley, then perhaps the sloth is more to your liking. Grab some metal rods and prepare to make snails. Sloths love metal.

For those players who have a lot of junk to store, we've reintroduced cabinets. They come in 3 sizes (small, regular and wall) and a variety of designs. Just check your furniture bag next time you're home (You'll need to leave your house and /home again to get them).

Miss your old firebog home? No longer! We've released some new furniture upgrades so your can recreate your authentic bog experience.

So head out to brush some foxes and create some snails. Lets us know what you think and tell us about any bugs you uncover. Go!

Note 1: We're gradually unlocking new areas of the world. This process will take a couple of hours.

---Known Issues---

We are investigating these things:

-Open verb may be available when new Cabinet is in your bag
-Some players may not be getting the Fox Brush or Bait from Ranger
-Some cabinets which have more than 16 slots only allow you that many- FIXED
-Rug recipe was removed- not a bug, sorry!

-Inventory area grows large with pixelated graphic when using fox brush for some players
-Reports of zooming issues near Foxes and Sloths
-Loss of Fiber when canceling spinning action- FIXED
-If you get Fox Brush out before Fox appears, brushing may fail

-Spaceship Cabinet takes two tries to open- FIXED
-Stuck Sloth on Kaha Haha- FIXED
-Keyholders cannot open cabinet- yet.

-Going "back to world" with an open cabinet will show the open cabinet display. Just hit "done" to close it then.

  • So many new things to discover! New areas to explore! Sloths! Foxes! (Foxbrushing is so much fun!) My favourite thing for now however is the firebog furniture. I mean... YAY FISHIES! And JARS! And LIZARDS! And FIREFLY LAMPS! Thankyouthankyouthankyou!

I think I have to tell myself to remember to breathe... xD

  • @IrenicRhonda, I'd hoped the cabinets were like multi-slotted SDBs, too. I hope that in the future those will be available.

  • What are these strange and mystical "cabinets" of which you speak?

Currently, I only have SDBs in my inventory...I imagine that there's supposed to be something more?

  • Feedback:

I'm not going to read all 4 pages of this forum, and I'll post in the Ideas forum too, but I'd like to express my immense desire for a class of cabinets whose slots act like SDBs! Coming?

  • Poppy, exit to world, then go back /home.  The cabinets should be visible now :)

Merth, I'm with you!  The items I have the most of are things I wouldn't normally want displayed.  It would be nice to have at least one "infinite" storage slot in each cabinet *_*

  • The spindle won't handle a full stack of fiber (not even close, it consistently breaks at about 700). Any chance we can get a super-spindle, please?
Posted 8 months ago by Pascale Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Why doesn't the sloth have a blue outline when it comes into proximity?
Posted 8 months ago by Pascale Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The spindle only has 100 uses, and there are 7 fibers needed per use...ergo the 700 limit.  But I agree with you...something that would handle an entire stack of fiber would be nice.  However, not too hard to do multiple loads for now...

  • Pascale: single-click interactions don't, in general. we're thinking about how to better indicate interaction targets consistenly

    super-spindle: maybe!
Posted 8 months ago by Bees! Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Bees! I don't find that to be true. Virtually everything you can interact with (pick up, eat, etc.) gets a blue outline. I can't think of anything that doesn't. Can you give me another example?

In fact, it's a perennial request of mine to NOT show the blue outline when interaction is no longer possible with an item (no more harvests or whatever).

  • pascale: those things are not single-click; they bring up a menu

  • I cannot brush the fox when anyone is standing close to me (or the fox.)

Thank you to the people who were understanding when I explained this. To the few who were not: pfft!

  • If we do fox brushing, sloth feeding, weaving etc. will it count towards possible future badges?

  • I don't wish to pile on, but wanted to add my voice to the chorus of people who'd be deeply grateful for a keyboard-based way to interact with the foxes. I have arthritis in my wrists and hands, and while fox brushing as it stands is *possible* for me, it's quite painful.

I appreciate that there's more to fox brushing than just clicking the fox--the element of timing/skill is exciting--but surely there's a way to have a similarly skilled keyboard command.

  • I had a glitch when brushing foxes. The brush became the size of my entire computer screen in a really distorted pixel format.

  • Is there a trick to making all the slots work in the cabinets. I have tried everything and still only half of the shelves in the cabinets work. Even so I LOVE LOVE LOVE them he he

  • Foxes and Sloths oh my!!!  too bad I have to go to the doctor first before I can play  :-(
Posted 8 months ago by UnegaWahya Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Disturbed- I claim credit for the fixed notation on there, but there was something else I didn't know, that I do now. The underlying problem is fixed, but it will require something else to happen (soon) in order to get that cabinet to reload. So, you'll have to live with it just a little bit longer. Sorry!

  • I rather enjoy just how many new places foxes reside. I didn't even realize there were some in the highlands until I took a Seam Street to Tamila.

Are you going to do this with the Sloths too? Or is it SUPER SEKRET

  • Wow, I really don't like the fox-brushing as a mini-game.  The reasons are multiple:

First, it's incredibly susceptible to any kind of lag, of which there is often (and right now always) plenty in Ur.  I would often click right on top of a fox, only to have it register long after the entire animation was over.  There are plenty of rendering and processing hiccups right now, and they uniquely slaughter this interaction.

Second (possibly related, maybe not), my brush doesn't always listen to me -- that is, I'm holding the mouse clicked, waiting for a fox, and then it just suddenly does a swipe and comes up empty; I haven't moved.  Interruption in wireless traffic?  Limit to how long you can hover? I don't know, but it's infuriating.

Third, this is a little bit of a pesky interaction using a trackpad rather than a mouse -- not prohibitive, but another reason (beyond RSIs) to consider some kind of keyboard bypass.  (Fine to still have to hit Return/Up-arrow at the right moment, but then at least you could choose Brush at leisure.)

Fourth, and to me most striking, is that the difficulty feels both punitive and totally disconnected from the rest of the vibe of the game -- that is, I'd rather have to brush over and over (like petting pigs or squeezing chickens), getting a small yield each time, than have a real-time minigame with a 90% miss rate but a large pay-off when you do succeed.  (The total yield over a large number of trials might be the same, but this feels like a battle rather than a meander as I have been trained to expect.)  I don't know how that would fit -- you'd probably need a cuter and friendlier fox, rather than a sneaky one trying to avoid you -- but it wouldn't make me want to skip the whole thing (or start planning now a fiber-free look for my house)!

Maybe the no-lag experience is so much better that I would feel completely different, but right now I find that hard to believe.  Sorry to be a downer at a New Content party, but unless you're planning to overhaul the general tenor of the game, you might want to tweak this part a bit.  Just my two cents.

  • Thank you for all the new streets to explore! And the foxes and sloths are wonderful!

Thank you also for the cabinets - I've already moved most of the stuff in my old cabinet into the new one, apart fom the items I have SDBs for.
Posted 8 months ago by Mocha Maid Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I agree with confowsled about the lag; even though I don't have a lot of it, the bit that I do have causes a high failure rate.  Often I don't see any reason for having missed the fox, since it has stayed in the same spot through the entire brushing attempt.  On the other hand, I love that there is some small amount of skill involved in brushing, because the rest of the game is so predictable.

  • confowsled: The brush taking a swipe on its' own seems like it's intentional behavior (feel free to correct me, devs). The brush seems to wiggle more and more violently before swiping at the air- a penalty of sorts for just dragging the brush out and waiting.

There was another game I'd played at one point (may have been Team Fortress 2, it's been too long to be sure) that had a bow & arrow weapon- you charged it up to fire, but if you held it for too long waiting for the perfect shot, it would misfire and send your arrow off to who-knows-where. I'm seeing the brush wiggling as a similar situation, encouraging players to wait for the fox to be nearby, then pull out the brush.

As for your difficulty-related comment, I agree that we could use some sort of low-lag low-yield alternative to brushing- maybe a tame fox who doesn't mind sitting still and being brushed a few times a day.

*edit* - I can now put the Fox Brush into my toolbox. Thank you!

  • So, after this new update, all the items on my tables float above the table.  Even when I try to move the items away and re-rest them on the table, it seems the default placement is about 100px above the actual surface.

  • Xopher, drag your counter/table into your inventory and back out, then replace the items. That should help a bit.

  • Urgh. Double post.
Posted 8 months ago by Millie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Xopher, I found that I could just flip an item (table, counter, whatever) instead of removing it and that would fix the floating item issue.
