Why Are We Having So Much Unhappiness Lately?

This is the first time I have started a discussion so bear with me. When I joined this game around launch time (I was not in beta sadly) I fell in love with this game immediately. I loved the fact this was a game was made for adults and everyone I met on the game was so welcoming. Lovely gaming community where everyone you bumped into was so friendly, giving and willing to help. This game was like a breath of fresh air from other games I have played or am playing. Sure there was a few undesirable players out there but very very few that you hardly bumped into them at all.

Then this Unlaunching happened. We are now back in beta. New skills have been implemented. All the sudden we are having an increase of thefts, hurt feelings, anger, and self-righteous behavior from players that feel they have a "right" to take what is obviously not theirs but feel they have the right "since it is a community garden" or "since that guano drops on the ground" as a few examples. Where is all this coming from and why? I am honestly puzzled about this sudden turn in behavior.

I am opening this as a discussion, please don't flame or troll.

  • I agree that the number of nasty attitudes in game has increased recently.
I just do my best to ignore it and spread the lubs <3

I'm always happy to help others if I can and I don't take what's obviously not mine.
I even carry empty bigger bags to give to Glitchen that 'leak' items :D

I say we all just combat all the weird nastiness with lots of lubs and happiness!

  • I'm more of a solo-player actually, but I have also noticed an increase in issues in the forums. For the lack of anything substantial to add, I think I'll just share a quote:

"The Roots of our Problems are: Wealth without work, Pleasure without conscience, Knowledge without character, Commerce without morality, Science without humanity, Worship without sacrifice, Politics without principles." — Mohandas k. Gandhi

Not too sure if the same applies to Glitch...

  • I think since the herbs are in such high demand people are steal cause they don't have enough currants to buy them and they sneak up on other and grab what they can
so if we all  start going to community gardens and leaving seeds guano and plants as well as giving them away to anyone who needs them. I think maybe if those of us who have lots of stuff hoarders you know who you are fill a bag and just give it away to anyone you see it might be catching once you start giving others will to :)
I have already started hopefully it will bring back the old feeling.

  • When the game unlaunched, people got worried.  TS was so awesome in their communication about the matter but the fact is that no matter what, some people are going to be resistant to change. So you get some threads talking about what might happen next, people in chat worrying with each other, and so forth. Not a huge deal by itself.

Related to that was an issue with housings and alt accounts and it had not been decided on officially until a little bit later, so that was another thing that people saw as up in the air.  Again, not a huge deal, but probably did contribute to the overall atmosphere.

Also there were a couple of things that happened - player conflicts, people speaking on the forums with an unclear picture of certain events, etc - that could have happened at any time.  But put them into the mix of the uncertain or unhappy feelings that were already there and I think that may have made it worse.

The last thing but not the least is the issue with herbs. Due to new skills, new items and preexisting components of those items raised in price.  That I believe directly influenced the attitudes and actions of people in the game especially in regards to community herb gardens.

With the community gardens, there's a difference between what's allowed within the rules of Glitch and what's consistent with the spirit of Glitch as interpreted by many who play the game.  So when that comes into conflict it could lead to unhappy players.

Of course I do believe things will settle down.  This was a time of transition but as we all become comfortable with the changes (and the market stabilizes, as I think it has begun to do) things will move towards the status quo.

However, there will always be people playing the game differently.  The conflict I mentioned between what's allowed within the rules and what is viewed by some as the community spirit is, I believe, always going to happen (barring significant changes to the game that I doubt will happen).  There are mining spots, for example, where people come into conflict about how best to mine, and that hasn't been influenced by any of the transition things; it was there before and the conflict will continue to be there.

But here's the bottom line, as far as I'm concerned.  I wholeheartedly believe that a very large component of the atmosphere of a website/game/online community is the involvement of those who are in charge.  From everything I've seen since being here, staff are involved in the game.  They take care of problems quickly.  Volunteers are on hand to answer questions promptly.  And I believe that they do want a healthy, happy community, and being around means that they can help make this happen.

Of course I don't discount any of the community-spirit of the individual game players.  They are, after all, what make up the community.  But I mention the staff because their involvement means that I don't worry about the individual players deciding that being community-minded isn't worth it.  Instead, I have full confidence that Glitch will continue to be the type of game where I can be kind to people and have kindness shown to me.

  • I think its stress. All the things that diaveborn mentioned as factors have caused considerable stress for some and some stress for others. I admit to feeling stressed about the lack of herbs and I have had a firebog house since launch! The harvests are so pitifully small! And I've not been near a herb auction or a community herb garden since it went crazy...just trying to grow your own even on your own private plots is such hard work, for anything approaching large quantities. Still, a lot of other things are very easy in the game, I suppose having one difficult thing is probably necessary :) I like the idea of combatting things with kindness, which there is plenty of anyway, and lots of parties, like the zombie crawl last night! Of course I'm mainly stressing about gathering enough potions for parties...all a bit of a vicious circle... :)

  • Ah; the onset of the age of entitlement in Glitch.
We all want want want and will start complaining if things aren't on the silver platter...

I guess Glitch really does mirror the world at large :(
Posted 12 months ago by Mschif Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yeah, it's definitely stress. There was a lot of change & uncertainty at once. And groups tend to amplify feelings - so while we were all just a touch stressed by it, individually, the group (the forums & chat -- the Glitch community) fed off of it. And off of each other.

(not to mention that this is a particularly stressful time of year in real life, too. holidays, finals, travel, family, money, etc.)

I think this makes us all a bit more sensitive and more likely to see the bad before the good. Ohnoes! Change! Look at what it's doing! People are mean! And stealing! It confirms our fears and worries. It justifies our feelings.

Sure, there's probably a touch more of that because folks are stressed out, but I think there's also a bit more good going around. I've seen lots of folks helping each other out, giving advice, having random parties, and acting silly but I haven't run into a single jerk in days. Not even at the community gardens. Not that I pop in there much, and I know folks have had their herbs swiped from under them, but I haven't seen it. Usually I just see folks chatting away while tending their herbs. And I've heard of random parties popping up there, so it seems to be just as likely that you'll pop in on a party as it is that you'll have your herbs stolen. Considering how dead the places used to be, that's pretty cool.

  • i am finding a general upswing in beggars.

give me money, give me food, i don't have enough money to buy food...
are you standing next to a bean tree? harvest it.
that takes too much time. give me money.

and then some "kind soul" (read "mark") comes along and gives them money "to start out with" and then the next thing you hear is the same "poor" person saying give me money, i don't have enough money to buy food...

i mean, if you're a newbie (you know, anything under level 30) and you're working but missing some tools i'll be happy to whip you up some, but if you're standing under a bean tree complaining that you're too hungry and need me to give you stuff, i have no time for you.

how on urth do you think i amassed my fortune? it wasn't by standing next to perfectly harvestable resources and begging.

Posted 12 months ago by Woochi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @flask: I have noticed this, too.

Example: I was harvesting (which typically takes a couple of hours of real time) and ran across a player I don't know well but have spoken to before at least once. S/he didn't recall that we had spoken, just that s/he had "seen me around before." Two sentences later, s/he said something like, "I need some meat." Well, I have collectors at home. I wasn't nibbling piggies so I didn't even HAVE any to give, if I were so inclined to just hand some over. So I said, "Wow, I guess you need to get to nibbling some piggies, then!" Good thing there were 9 or 10 on that street alone, you know? And s/he said, "You just don't get it do you?" and got cross and teleported away to another location.

Oh, no, I got it. You were being a begz0r. I just chose not to hand over resources I didn't even have.

(Example 1.5: A few weeks ago, a player was standing in the middle of the Groddles, surrounded by harvestables, and claiming to be near death and demanding food and currants. I still had empty bags, as I had TPed to the area to start harvesting, so I hit him/her with a couple of Random Kindnesses. Apparently RKs show when the recipient has topped out, by showing they have received less than 50 mood or energy total. The first one bestowed indicated less than 50 mood given, the next showed that the player received about 12 energy. In other words, not anywhere near death, just being a begz0r. When I expressed puzzlement that one could be near death with topped-out energy and mood while surrounded with trees and animals to harvest, and explained that dying isn't even a truly bad thing in Glitch since you get badges and achievements and it is not difficult to bounce back after a trip to Hell / Naraka, the player just repeated rude, pushy demands for food and currants and claimed again to be near death and somehow unable to pet the piggies or harvest the trees due to a "computer problem" and the people s/he was bothering with constant IMs, local chat whines and unsolicited trade windows and telling him/her to leave them alone were wrong to be annoyed by the constant begging and trade requests and complaints. "Sounds like you need some help if you have refreshed and are still unable to interact with the animals and trees, so I'll contact Support for you," I said. S/he didn't like that!)

Example 2: I popped into Live Help to ask if there was an issue in Rasana that prevented the mail frogs from arriving, as I had ordered something two hours earlier, refreshed, checked a mailbox, and not received it. (Refreshing again produced the item in a mailbox.) When I popped back in to report that Live Help's suggestion had worked, there was another player in there asking where s/he could find a Bean Seasoner. Staff chose not to just spoil the game by giving the answer and instead provided the player--who did not appear to be actually over 14 years old!--with the information they could use to figure out the answer him- or herself. The rudeness that followed was astounding. "Why won't you TELL me?" "Just TELL me!" "OMG, I hate this! I hate you!" "But WHICH vendor?!" "Why are you being so stupid?!" and so on. I was appalled. I typed "O_o, backing out of Help channel slowly" and did just that. Poor Staff.

Example 3: While in Group Chat, another new player asked a new player kind of question. Several people, including myself, explained that s/he did not yet have the animal skills required to harvest animals without additional tools and some grinding. I said something like, "While you're a newbie, you'll need the butterfly lotion." S/he IMMEDIATELY treated us all to a tirade about me using the word "newbie" (as if it was an insult), Global Chat was appalled and shocked, and then s/he blamed the rage over being called a "newbie" (like that is a bad thing! Gah!) on his/her "sister" who "said it was an insult." Global was not impressed with the "someone else took over my keyboard and I am not responsible for the rudeness that was just typed" excuse and several announced that they were now less inclined to help the player with any questions s/he had in the future. This player also did not appear to be at least 14 years old.

What I learned: Some people do not want to do ANY work at all, be it basic harvesting or figuring out which vendor sells a certain item, or just exploring Ur, and neither you nor I can really help them because their enjoyment is "getting stuff for free, immediately" and not trying to support themselves or puzzle things out or even use Google or the Glitch wiki or forums. These folks cheat themselves out of the enjoyment of the sense of accomplishment you get for figuring something out in a game, or working cooperatively with other players, or gathering harvestables / earning bonuses like food and music boxes, etc., for themselves.

This said, I have seen a LOT more kindness, helpfulness and cooperation among players. That these incidents "stuck out" as being unusual says more to me than that they happened at all.

Cooperative gaming isn't for everyone, and it is also possible that some immaturity and demanding behavior / laziness is due to some players not being totally honest about being over 14, or simply lacking the relative maturity of a 14-year-old (which leads to some players (of whatever age) thinking it is easier to stand in one spot actively and repeatedly and rudely harassing other players for handouts all day than to actually play the game to earn them and some players who are rude and unappreciative when asking others for help with gameplay questions).

I have no great advice, other than to not do what you are uncomfortable with doing. I give plenty of new players gifts and help with questions and quests (and some particularly nice noobs I have befriended, I have helped them buy housing; can't afford to do that for a while!) but I typically do not give handouts to or continue to answer questions for rude players. I give them the tools to solve their own problems, how to ask Live Help questions (sorry, Staff!), where to find the wiki or the forums (sorry, forums!), but I don't feel motivated to assist the rude or lazy.

Again, the rude and lazy are the MINORITY. 99.9% of the people I run into in Glitch are generous and kind and cooperative. Maybe we just need to focus on those folks.

  • I've run into a fair bit of begging recently, including somebody I gave a few bowls of stew to- only to have them IM me 20 minutes later saying they were dying (again), somehow. Since I was halfway across the map and wasn't born yesterday, I told them, Sorry, I'm too far away, so you'll have to harvest a few things yourself. Never heard from them again.
I wonder why people think begging is acceptable, though- perhaps they think that, since the people in this game are fairly generous, they're mushy-brained idiots who aren't going to be able to tell a scam from a pencil in the neck. I dunno. All I know is that it's made me pay very close attention to how people act around me- if they constantly ask me for stuff with 500K in their wallet, then I get a little less interested in seeing them and end up chalking it up to that same attitude that seems to have spread somewhat in the last few months.

  • I've not HAD 500k in my wallet yet, but I certainly wouldn't begz0r if I did, Djabrill! How irritating.

  • It's happened. I got the sense that the person who did it didn't remember bragging to me about the amount of money they had, because maybe 3 or 4 hours after that they told me they were "broke" and "about to die".
We don't talk anymore, needless to say.

  • Bah Xev... yeah yeah I made an error and it was late. Now put your clothes back on for goodness sake! I will go fix it here in a second lol. Silly Xev.

I have not run into the begging yet and hope not to, but I have been thinking. Are kids out of school for the holidays now? I know they are here in New Zealand and Australia. Could this be part of the problems perhaps? I know even if the ToS says nobody under 14 can play and 14-17 years of age with parental permission. However kids are pretty crafty nowadays. Perhaps we are seeing a rise in immature players due to the holidays?

  • I think we're all adjusting to a lot of changes and uncertainties, as pointed out above. I also think that, since our numbers are growing all the time, there are more of us bumping up against one another than ever before. It also means there's more "anonymity" now--i.e., there's a greater likelihood that we'll encounter relative strangers who know and care little about offending others. I would also wager that, since launch, we've had a greater influx of younger players because it became easier and more instantaneous to sign up. Not to say that all younger players are an issue--not at all!!--but I think some have less experience in how to deal maturely with others.

Also, I was present for Lorelei's example #3, and I think that was primarily a result of a couple of misunderstandings. Yes, the player was rude to start with, but I think that they truly felt they were being belittled by the use of "noob". I don't believe the sister ever typed anything; the player was reacting based on their sister's interpretation (sister watching over shoulder). I IM'd this player and explained that folks weren't intending to insult them by using "noob", and I saw the lightbulb go on for them. I encouraged them to be polite, friendly, and keep their cool...and you know what? After that, they were very well-behaved. They even started saying "ty" in global when people answered their questions. Sadly, the damage was already done after their first exchange, though, I think. They're now on my f'list, and I've found them to be just fine. Just food for thought. It doesn't excuse the rudeness, but sometimes these altercations and bad feelings come about through

  • If we are into the funny rudeness stories, I have to mention a player yesterday who was picking up little grain piles people had left to feed pigs -- and also removed a note explaining the purpose of the grain piles -- even after being asked to stop. "I am poor and I need currants" said this Level 10 person who turns out to own a house in Groddle Forest. One Glitch then gave her 250 grain as a gift before putting down more for pigs, which she also promptly picked up and kept, moving from pile to pile to slurp it up. "I have a quest to get 1500 grain" she said, "Give me some more." She also kept begging people to give her a hatchet or potion or to trade with her to get some allspice. Surprise, surprise, not one person there was still willing to help Miss Graingrabber, and no that is not really her name.

  • People don't get there's a difference between "noob" and "newbie"
noobs are the ones standing at the bean tree begging for money and free stuff and don't seem interested in learning the game. Basically just caring for themselves.
newbie is just a new player that is actually learning to play the game and just need a gentle nudge in the right direction. They never expect anyone to do evrything for them.
Posted 12 months ago by MadHatter Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm fairly certain the terms "noob," "newb," "newbie," and "nugget" are all interchangeable. There's absolutely no set definition for each (in relation to the other), and to expect that everyone will suddenly subscribe to set definitions and in fact be appreciative of being called any of those terms versus getting offended by one of them is ridiculous.

A new person, regardless of rudeness, is a noob/newb/newbie/nugget. You don't have to be a noob to be a dick, and you don't have to be a dick to be a noob.

TL;DR: We can't all be noobs anymore, but we can all be dicks.
Posted 12 months ago by Xev Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It's a little crazy right now.  I won't set foot in community gardens.  Even worse, I feel like I have to try to find a cave with nobody else when I am feeding batterflies because I have had issues with players stealing piggy and batterfly plop.  (I consider it stealing when I feed a batterfly for a triple-plop or a piggy for seeds with resources I have collected and someone else takes the guano/plop.)

I think the problem is a mix of under-14 kids (begging) and adults intent on inventing some form of competition/griefing wherever game mechanics allow.  There will always be kids to contend with because businesses cannot realistically prevent kids with an email from lying and signing up for free websites and services. Tiny Speck is COPPA compliant but COPPA only works when parents supervise their kids.

As for the griefing, I really don't know.  I don't understand what makes one player feel like it's interesting or fun to take something that another player has worked for.  My brain doesn't work that way.  :-(

  • Heh. I love the responses in this thread.

Question: "Why do we have so much unhappiness lately?"
Answers: "Because everyone else is a dick and I hate them!"

    ...

Thus revealing the real answer: "Because everyone is getting hung up on shit that happened in a game when they didn't used to let it bother them so much."

Stop clinging to dickish behavior. It's a little weird that this has turned into a "funny stories about people behaving like dicks in the game" thread. They aren't all that funny.

Yes. There are people who are annoying in this game, and absolutely every other social environment in life.

Yes. You are justified in being annoyed by those people. But instead of harboring this weird internet self-righteous fury like it's somehow going to morph into an alternate fuel, why not deal with the shit as it happens and move on?

    Either:
    a) call them out on it as it's happening and explain why it bugs you in a way that doesn't make you look like a tool
    b) report them
    c) No, seriously, report that shit. If it's as bad as you're making it seem, REPORT IT
    d) if, upon reflection, it's just annoying, but really not all that bad, maybe it's not worth getting so upset about.

Posted 12 months ago by Casombra Amberrose Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It didn't. And that's not a response to all the posts here, which I should have clarified. My point was when the post is about why people are unhappy, and it turns into, "We have all of these jerks in the game doing jerk stuff," it's kind of counter-productive.

It's not that the jerks weren't here before. They totally were. I would even go so far as to suggest that sometimes, we were the jerks. And now that we're back in beta, we can't exactly say, "Well, they're all noobs, and therefore jerks."

The issue, on topic, as I see it, isn't so much that there are jerks, but how we deal with jerks. Talking about how many jerks there are in the game won't make them go away, and it won't make the game more fun. It will just make everyone more annoyed.

My issue with "sharing funny stories with friends," is that that's not what's actually happening in this thread. This thread's about venting about other people's behavior. Last I checked, I call that "venting."
Posted 12 months ago by Xev Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Mad Hatter that's also my understanding. they both mean "new", but while newb simply means "new to the game",  noob adds another dimension, which includes additional qualifiers like "dip, twit, jerk, moron, self-centered", etc. not going on some written down definition, just my personal understanding from ~25 years using them.

I do agree with the theories that some of this is younger players (and/or entitled adults). My own experience included a "scathing"  "Yer a Meanie!!!" thrown at me when I suggested that the person pick cherries, beans and bubbles if they were hungry and about to die (since they were standing in the middle of Groddle Meadows, one of the easiest places to pick a living). Unquestionably immature regardless of the person's age.

And then again, I've read apologetics from people who are clearly adults regarding the fleecing of others  in community gardens, as if having the gall to say they do it gives them sufficient moral high-ground to escape condemnation for their pathological tendencies. Sometimes re-pleat with blindingly obvious contradictions in the logic and phrases they use to excuse themselves.  Again, unquestionably immature, regardless of their age.

oh well, ride the rapids until they get bored or grow up, or until someone can figure another way out of this conundrum  I suppose.

  • Oh, the begging. I ran into one in Neva awhile back. Now, in Neva, people tend to share and share alike with each other and that's great. Somebody who's been in there for some time runs low on energy and gets hit with RKs and food donations, things like that and everyone cooperates. But most people come prepared to start a long mining trip.

There was one who showed up awhile back and immediately started begging for food, mining along with everyone else the whole time. I saw this person in action two or three times. They were back the next day (real life day) and started begging about two minutes after entering Neva. There was so much begging, I even IMed them and recommended they bring more food of their own, to be prepared. "But I don't have any money!" From a player who was in Neva several times. Who could have sold some sparkly and bought at least some food. To bring on their sparkly mining trips to Neva. I told them to buy some and they stopped talking to me.

I may not be describing it very well, but the whole thing struck me as someone who wanted everything given to them.

I have to say, though, I've run into very few beggars. Most players are willing to trade or buy and not just take-take-take. That makes it annoying when the Gimme-Gimme people don't get it and start/keep badgering you.

I was also watching global when the "newb" incident happened. I had an impression this was a kid (of whatever age) who was used to places where you're more likely to be insulted and belittled, and where "newb" is an insult. I hope they took it to heart when people told them it's not used that way here.

  • Two Wolves
    A Cherokee Legend
An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. "A fight is going on inside me," he said to the boy.

"It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil - he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego." He continued, "The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too."

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?"

The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

Here is the same story, but it is called "Grandfather Tells" which is also known as "The Wolves Within"
An old Grandfather said to his grandson, who came to him with anger at a friend who had done him an injustice, "Let me tell you a story.

I too, at times, have felt a great hate for those that have taken so much, with no sorrow for what they do.

But hate wears you down, and does not hurt your enemy. It is like taking poison and wishing your enemy would die. I have struggled with these feelings many times." He continued, "It is as if there are two wolves inside me. One is good and does no harm. He lives in harmony with all around him, and does not take offense when no offense was intended. He will only fight when it is right to do so, and in the right way.

But the other wolf, ah! He is full of anger. The littlest thing will set him into a fit of temper. He fights everyone, all the time, for no reason. He cannot think because his anger and hate are so great. It is helpless anger, for his anger will change nothing.

Sometimes, it is hard to live with these two wolves inside me, for both of them try to dominate my spirit."

The boy looked intently into his Grandfather's eyes and asked, "Which one wins, Grandfather?"

The Grandfather smiled and quietly said, "The one I feed."

  • It seems probable that the players who want to get stuff without working for it are perhaps the kind of players who won't stay in the game very long.

Perhaps part of the problem was also that boredom was beginning to creep in a bit. Maybe part of the hysteria over herbs and potion-making was that there was suddenly something new to do and people got over-excited about it.

  • If you are suggesting I am trying to feed anything Dreamboat Annie, again it is not my intent to do so. I am curious to why there seems to be more unhappiness lately. I see it constantly lately when before I did not.

Sure you saw someone complaining about lack of housing or certain houses, or "inactive" players, and other minor complaints but nothing like what I am seeing now. There seems to be more pure anger than annoyances.

  • Why focus on the negative? I haven't run into any jerks yet, but I'll just block 'em if I do. In the meantime, I'll go about doing my thing. The best part of the game is giving stuff away, right? Isn't that the only real reason to be swimming in currants? Maybe I'm unable to be real financially generous in the RW, but my glitch is fabulously wealthy (by her simplistic terms) and has more than enough to spare. I *would* however like to see customizable signs for the beggars. "Will dance for beans!"

  • I actually stated this same thing in live chat one day when I had simply asked about the alt accounts and no one there could give me a straight answer. They just kept saying 'well if you use it right' or 'just be cautious of what you do' .. All I wanted to know is if I should delete my alternate account? Well.. Reason why I had asked this is because of the issue with having bog houses for herb gardens on alternate accounts. Apparently this is not allowed, but yet it IS ok for your friend to give you a key to use theirs. Makes no sense really. I feel as though if someone wants to have an alternate account to get things in the game that they want then go for it? It's a game. It's free currants and there is nothing hurting anyone. Since this ban of alt accounts it's been a rage in herb gardens which I myself refuse to ever visit ever! It's ridiculous how this game has went from being all wonderful people to a bunch of childish, selfish, snobby, & inconsiderate people! I deleted my alternate account simply because no one could give me a straight yes or no answer of if they were bad. I would rather not have an alt than be banned over something stupid. I sure hope when this game launches again it'll be the way it once was. With kind loving people that made me addicted to this game and it's community. Sorry if anything I said was offensive to anyone. :)

  • Casombra - I'm in no way criticizing you for creating this thread. I certainly don't think you're out of place here, either, and I'm sorry if my post came across to the contrary.

You aren't responsible for everyone else's post in this thread. You started a topic of discussion. Where it goes from there, good or bad, is not on you. You asked an important question, and people are answering honestly. That's pretty great, actually, and I do not want you to think I'm at all irritated with you. Or anyone, specifically, for that matter.

I'm frustrated with the level of "us vs. them" that a lot of these topics devolve into. I'm also a little tired of the whole "Well, so and so did this in the game, and aren't they just horrible people?" type of thing. God help you if you step on anyone's toes. You'll hear about it in the most passive aggressive way on the forums.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not trying to justify anyone's behavior. Simply pointing out that THIS *gestures to topic as a whole* doesn't make anything better. To the contrary, I'd say it makes us look pretty damn petty. Glitch isn't about conning people out of stuff so that you don't actually have to work at advancing in the game. It's ALSO not about doing this kind of passive aggressive type of posting. I'm seeing it a LOT on the boards and it leaves a foul taste in my mouth.

Right or wrong, take the higher ground, Glitchen. People are going to be dicks. That's a fact of life. There are things you can actively do to nip that shit in the bud and demonstrate you aren't going to tolerate it. But posting stuff like this doesn't do that. It just turns into mud slinging.

We've seen it a lot lately; people who had gotten banned starting MULTIPLE topics to talk about it. People who were "not named" speaking up to defend themselves. That reflects badly on everyone involved. No one comes out of it squeaky clean. I'm not saying that anyone here is bad, or annoying, or a jerk for posting here.

People do shitty things, and it's nice to have a place to vent about it. But venting here isn't really fair or appropriate. And it doesn't look good. You don't come off as being the awesome people I know you to be.

Most of you are my friends, and if you aren't on my friends list, I certainly hold you in pretty high regard. I want everyone else to see what kind of awesome people you are, too.

  • Fair enough Xev, I guess I was misunderstanding what you were pointing out. I know this topic is not making the situation any better, not making it worse either I don't think, but maybe if we can understand where it is all coming from we can deal with it better I guess.

I too have been sickened by some of the stuff I have seen here on both game and forums, some of it darn near looks like snakes spitting venom it is so cruel and ruthless. I have seen some that I call friends leave the game due to this sort of behavior and it breaks my heart.

My wish? That we return to the fun and glitchy way the game was before all this has come about. True we will never be free of "People who do shitty things" but maybe we can work together as a community and stamp some of it out.

By the way Xev when is the next Splanking Fight? I think I need to have some fun lol.

  • @☆Sprinkles☆: Don't feel bad about being confused about alt accounts. It is confusing. In my understanding of the situation, TS intentionally weren't completely clear with cut-and-dried rules about it. That's because they want to deal with any possible "unfair advantage" on a case-by-case basis and they need wiggle room in order to do that. One thing they were pretty clear about is that they would first contact any player they thought might be using an alt to gain an "unfair advantage" and discuss it with them before taking any action.

I hope this helps you with any confusion you may still have. If you want to use an alt to simply play in a different style, with different skills, etc.  and if you don't play both characters together at the same time, then that's probably okay.

  • interesting that dotcom brought up miss graingrabber.

    THAT girl was SERIOUSLY annoying.

dotcom and i see proper planting of wickodoon mood from different sides and we were attemting to have a civil conversation about that while miss graingrabber was alternately bugging everyone one the street AND attempting to start trades AND telling dotcom and me to chill out and stop talking.

we are very, very sorry we were interrupting her annoyingness with  our debate on proper forestry practice. very sorry.

    very, very sorry.

it turns out that in most cases you can get most of those kids (and while there are children who know ho to behave, this behavior is for the most part a child's behavior even though some grownups never seem to shed it) by offering them advice: you're standing next to a bean tree. why don't you harvest that?

and then continue to give them advice: sure, i have lots of money. i made it by harvesting trees. harvest, harvest, harvest. sell everything you can. go on, get busy! don't stand here wasting your time talking to me! why, when i first started out i had only a watering can and a hoe. and i pet and harvested until i could afford a pick and the i mined until i learned advanced gardening and AK skills and now i pet, harvest and mine everything i come to. you should try it too, it really works...

oddly, by the time i'm about two sentences in, they're usually on another street.

What a lovely idea; I mean, if Glitchen could actually dance! And it would increase your mood! I think we need a potion for that! :-)

  • I didn't read all the replies, but I will echo the idea of the overall stress of unlaunching... and I will add, stress in real life as well.  I find that the November/December time of endless holiday prep, end of semester stress (doubled, as I work in a school as well as attend school), and general "I have to be all nice because it's the holidays and no one really wants to know how stressed I am!  Driving in the winter!  Spending too much money!  RELATIVES VISITING!  Was I generous enough with the charity people?!  GAH!" might exacerbate Glitch-stress.  Since the internet is anonymous and all, I think that perhaps people take their real-world stresses out in a pixelated "no one knows me" place.
