Street projects make my browser slow

Just joined my first street project and the lag was horrendous.  I have a pretty high-end machine here, running in Firefox under Windows 7.  I tried reloading and it didn't help.

From the comments in chat a lot of other players were finding things equally slow.  Is this the general experience?

I heard people refer to using scripts.  I thought it was against the ToS to use them in live gameplay?

  • Yeah, I'm getting really bummed out by street projects. I missed one whole phase just trying to refresh the game screen, and I could barely participate in the other phases. It's nice that we all play on one server and everything, but it's really a bummer not being able to participate in certain things.

Also running a pretty decent machine over here.

  • scripts probably referred to teleport scripts.

I believe staff had said they were working to change the system to make it easier for larger numbers to participate, but I was told by some present at one project that this is the same system as in the past.  So I kinda think they released these streets just to keep us vultures happy after the back to beta announcement.

And I fully expect that eventually there will be a system where we don't have to gather quite as tightly and bog down the servers

  • I managed 0.17% of one of the phases working as fast as the screen refreshes would allow, ie: click on 'how can I help?' wait fricken ages,
click on an item to donate, wait fricken ages,
oh it got completed while I was waiting and now some of the work bits are nearly complete too, click on one of them,
    wait,
    select max units,
    wait,
start it working..wait...2 units competed ...PHASE COMPLETE!

    pfft, fairly pointless

Had a couple of complete crashes on another phase, I don;t think I'm going t be able to contribute much to this part of the game ;(

  • yeah, so far they are not very fun.  100+ wireframe glitches on top of each other and terrrrrrrible lag.

  • I think an obvious solution would be to spread out the places where you can contribute. Maybe every street spirit in the whole zone would accept contributions so people can hang out at a bunch of different streets.

    Or

Have random construction workers appear all over the zone at random times and ask for help. Then it would be more of a hunt which could be interesting, although people would be running all over the place like chickens that heard mention of KFC which would cause some lag problems. Still it'd be better then this.

  • It will definitely get better. Eventually the number of people participating will decrease and the lag will go away. And there used to be multiple projects simultaneously so that also help split the interested into smaller groups.

  • I'm giving up on street projects until they're rethought. In the time it takes me to find out what's needed, teleport home, get the materials, and teleport back, the project is done. This has happened to me twice. Too many bored Glitchen mean that street projects are done in minutes.

  • I participated in one of these, but it was not very much fun because it kept freezing up my screen.  I like the idea of hunting for construction workers.

  • I think the requirements just need to be increased. At the current rate, phases are done in just about 10 mins. When lag and crowding slow down the game massively during a street project, it is clear that the current system is a problem. The majority of the Glitch population doesn't even have time to contribute to a project must less find out about them before they're completed.

How fast do you want to have streets to be opened TS? It may not be a bad idea to lengthen the time / materials requirements to open up a new street. It would allow more of the community to get involved which is what this awesome game is all about.

Edit: Just crashed right before phase 4, Jazi Kaya, started. When i finished reloading, it was over :(

  • Add more RAM.
    Case closed.

  • @Volkov RAM is the only thing on my christmas wish list this year :D

  • Volkov: more than 4 gigabytes?  If that really would make a difference then a large fraction of glitch players would need to buy a whole new machine.  Hardly reasonable.

  • Fine fine.
    Put in a new processor.
    Or you can always format.

  • I have 6GB, a 16k broadband connection, and still crashed.

  • RAM is Most Definitely not the issue.

  • It might be worse for people without lots of resources on their system, but the issue is server side.
