Features and Tweaks: Jellis, Honey, Beer, Loam, and a few other things.

Just a few quick notes:

A) At this point it's pretty clear, that given loam yields, we need one or two more additional uses, other than resource repair.  Or, perhaps, we need more resource repairs that DO use loam.

B) Jellis: Jellis are the petroleum of Ur.  You need them for machine operation, some crafting, and some resource repairs.  It takes a ton of Jelli to make a fuel cell.  Wood machines eat fuel cells like it's no one's business. I think we might need additional jelli superharvest bonus cards, or scale back on the wood machines overall power consumption, perhaps a card that confers woodmachine efficiency.

C) As we gently slouch in the direction away from merchants, two important resources ripe for player harvesting are beer and honey. Suggesting the still as a means of beer production has been posed elsewhere. Suggesting honey be harvestable from another animal has also been posed elsewhere.  I think the time, for where we are in the game's development, is ripe for these two things to be next.

D) Olive oil is probably the next in line to make player created, possibly involving a new tree type; a new 'fruit changer' setting; or another Unique Beast. That, in turn, could spawn oily dressing (blender? shaker?) as a player created item.

None of these ideas are unique to me; we've discussed them here before, at many times, in different threads. It just felt like perhaps the time was right to start looking at these things again.

  • A) Yes, more uses for loam! I think it would be appropriate for Herb Gardens to make more use of Loam rather than Earth given you frequently receive Loam as a reward.

    B) Wood machines are a bit weird, they use more fuel yet give relatively little iMG compared to Metal Machines. Presumably the iMG difference is partly because planks are an unrefined resource but it does use rather a lot of them. I don't think there is much of a problem with Jellis/fuel cells aside from the Wood machines though so it is probably just the Wood machines that need something. At the least an upgrade equivalent to 'Betterer Blockmaker' for Wood Machines (40% fuel savings) would be good.

    C) and D)
I realise TS have been very busy with the imagination and housing updates but it would be nice to see non-vendor means of production for such resources in the not too distant future. It would also be good to make the remaining non-craftable tools craftable (although I realise this may be waiting on a further Tinkering skill level).

  • I'm bumping this thread because I am so desperate for there to be a real use for loam in this game.  It's pitched as some kind of "special" drop, since raising your gardening skills makes it drop more often and inspires congratulatory messages from the garden plots etc., but it just accumulates worthlessly while I go through plain ol' dirt like nobody's business.  Make loam awesome plz!

  • I'd also like to chime in with the observation that fireflies are underused as well.

  • Yes, and the main thing fireflies are used for is making crystals, which are themselves useless.  I was hoping with all the building and reconstruction projects that these things would gain value for us, but they haven't.

... and then the vendors went and added LIGHT BULBS?  As a vendor-only item?  I know I'm not the only person who's disappointed that lamps didn't create more fun recipes for us to learn.  Such a great opportunity to bring crystals and fireflies into our game.  I really hope that changes.
