Home trolling prevention?

I saw a guy in the mines write a note titled "A Cautionary Tale" about someone who knocked on his house and, after letting her in, proceeded to take all of his stuff.

This is clearly a problem, because it abuses goodwill. What if a person wants to let someone in their house from afar just to check it out? Are we going to become scrooges because of the potential abuse here? Glitch doesn't seem like that type of community. Most of the solutions I can think of aren't very good, but I can think of a few that might solve this problem:

1. Have an option for enabling and disabling item-sharing.

2. Prompt the user if a person wants to pick up an item from their house. This could be done like a firewall, with "just this once" permission and with "forever" permission.

3. Allow the user to completely block a person from repeated knocks. I had a guy knock twice -- he was clearly gunning for my stuff.

4. Only allow selected users to know when we're online or to be able to knock on our doors.

  • There have been requests for Model Homes like the ones in Alakol. When  I hosted parties before they became 100 glitches events I picked stuff up and put it in my cabinet and otherwise i only let in friends. Houses are not really a place other people have a need to be themselves.

  • Sierra's The Realm, (probably the second MMO after M59) had the same problem.

People complained for ages until the devs gave the house owners a /boot <name> command.

Thus the unwanted "guest" was warped off-property.  Unfortunately the game did not have a trading dialog so the unscrupulous soon found it was easy to scam a trade where the buyer gave half the cash for an item, which was then to be traded to the buyer by the seller, but the seller would /boot the buyer in mid-transaction.

Model Homes in each neighborhood (party houses?) would help immensely in the "can I see what it looks like?" scams.  Images on the house page in the browser of the rooms and the yard for each houses model (that is a generic same 2 or 3 images per model type) would as well.

Unfortunately even with the PG-13 rating the griefers will come, and they will steal, and they will find ways to make throw-away accounts to do so repeatedly.  Just like in the real-world as population increases so does mistrust and (in some cases deserved) fear of strangers.

  • Model Homes could be used for communal living until you can afford your own place but guild halls or such could also fill that role if they happen at a later point

  • that wasn't trolling. you left your door unlocked and got robbed.

  • Like another poster here I try to pick stuff up before I let guests in my home.

If someone wants to see what my home looks like I just refer them to the exact reality page.

And since there is no way to "leave your door unlocked" in this game entry requires deception on the part of the thief-to-be. That's still a form of "trolling" or "griefing"  at least in the context that both represent people being assholes.

  • @Caesura:  Thanks, another thing I didn't know.

It seems that a lot of information about the game  is relatively obscure as yet.  I realize this is still beta, but good documentation is a must for software (especially a game targeted to a "social" gaming audience in my opinion,) and September is not that far away if they really intend to go live then as mentioned in a few posts.

And now back to your regularly scheduled thread ;p

  • Crating an imagainary persona, and using it to steal imaginary stuff from other imaginary personas is an odd pastime.

  • I agree it's an odd pastime, but then we live in our imaginations.  There is not really much difference in the mind pictures our imaginations paint of a book, a movie, the world or Ur or the RW.  All can profoundly influence us, and I think griefers get just as much satisfaction from trashing our imaginary lives as they would trashing our RW ones.  I think it's also true that as Glitch grows the number of assholes showing up will grow with it.  Hopefully we can adopt the frame of mind to simply shrug off their depredations while keeping faith with the vast majority of those who embrace the true Glitch.

  • How does the boot command work?  And is it effective if that person saves the location inside your home before you boot them?  And can someone enter your home if they have you on Follow?

After reading in the forum of the issues people were having with items being stolen inside their homes, sadly I have been reluctant to allow anyone inside my house.  I like the idea of inviting new members into my home but have changed my mind after reading the forums.  Maybe if there was the ability to lock your cabinet so no one could open it and lock your bags so no one could pick it up?  I don't know what the best solution would be.

  • You cannot save homes as a teleportation point, no tp scripts or points so people have to be let in. I have however had people go offline and pop up in my house week later (they had all been in for house for the apocalypse party) but since you had to have let them in in the first place it should not be a big deal.

I do not know about summoning people though, shall have to test that.

  • +100 Crepeist!

I agree, we need more options to enable and disable sharing. Or, have a key for those we trust, that would allow them to pick up items (something along those lines, maybe)

  • Actually, Anilover, you can save homes as teleportation  points in the 30k and 50k homes.  I have no idea if a visitor could do the same ...

  • As far as I know people can't open up your cabinets. Locking stuff against being picked up by others has been suggested before (and often).

  • Cabinets are locked to visitors, though this has apparently had its share of bugs in the past.

What is supposed to happen if someone sets a TP point to your home or gets summoned is that they end up on the doorstep, ready to knock and ask permission to come in.  If you boot someone, they get put outside your door and can't get back in unless you allow them again.  I think following works the same; you still have to give permission for each person to come in.  I can do some double checking when we start up again.
