We mine collectively in one particular mine street and have some established etiquette about how it works. Every day some glitch roll through and STEAL ALL THE FOODS. I'm not talking about a few carpaccios, here. Most of us are upper level players and throw down quite a nice spread.
This morning some dude whose name I will not mention cruised through, STOLE ALL THE FOODS and ran off. I chased him 2 streets over and politely said "Hey, it's rude to steal food from a party." He told me to "F*** Off" and ran off again.
It would be lovely if there could be a feature where a quorum of glitchen in a given room could vote a naughty glitch off the street for some period of time. Not sure how that could be done in a way that would avoid abuse, but seriously, we are now hesitant to lay down any food at all in that mine, and that bums out the whole social aspect of the game for me.
Epilady, re: "It would be lovely if there could be a feature where a quorum of glitchen in a given room could vote a naughty glitch off the street for some period of time. Not sure how that could be done in a way that would avoid abuse"
Yeah, none of us are sure how to do that in a way that would avoid abuse either, so it is very unlikely to happen. Parties on public streets are always going to be subject to this and that's one of the reasons we invented the Party Packs. (It looks like we still haven't made it so that the person who creates a Party Space can kick others out of the party, but this is coming.)
There was also a situation earlier where somebody decided the thing to do would be to follow me around and splank me- over and over and over, and not just in one place, chasing me around the room. Even after I'd requested they stopped more than once (didn't help that I was in the double digits energy-wise and couldn't eat anything due to constant interruption by the splanking). I blocked them and that didn't really help, either.
I hear people say that griefers will run out of steam and get tired of it after awhile and only the "nice" people will be left, but I'm starting to rethink that. I mean, that argument's a little like telling a kid to ignore a bully and they'll go away- what motivation does a bully have to stop bullying if they're free to do whatever they want to, and there's almost nothing a person can do to end it? And if a person finds jerking people around to be fun, as griefers generally do (hence why they do it), they're unlikely to just decide they're bored with it.
That case would be harassment, and I'd just report it, Djabrill. That is the best route for what happened to you. Though I do think if you block a person, it should make them unable to use any actions on you, so hopefully someday that will be changed.
As for the stuff being stolen from public streets.. well.. they're public streets. Sucks all the same though. Unfortunately, jerks will be jerks. We must simply say, "C'est la vie." and move on.
Maybe create a buffet table item - any food placed on it would only be able to be removed at a certain rate by any one Glitch. It wouldn't solve a group effort to disrupt the party, but would keep an individual from making off with the whole spread.
I like that idea! Or a "picnic blanket" where deposited snacks were similarly safe.
I have no issue with sharing party food with any and all strangers....it's just soooo crappy when one person runs away with everything. There's no acknowledgment of the hard work and many currants everyone used to share their goodies.
I agree that someone coming through, picking up all the food at your picnic, and then telling you off is extremely rude. However, it is also very rude to try and isolate a public area containing valuable resources so that it is dominated by a small clique of people, and make others feel unwelcome there. I'm really not sure who I'd vote off the island first.
I had another player run by and make off with the drops from SF powder. Not a big thing except in terms of manners; you KNOW piggies just don't drop meat, you can hear the SFX of the powder, and if it wasn't you casting it, it's extremely rude to take things that aren't yours.
@Meheret - Nobody's run anybody off from there, so it's not a situation of "isolat[ing] a public area containing valuable resources so that it is dominated by a small clique of people, and mak[ing] others feel unwelcome there"... anybody who shows up and can comport themselves with a modicum of courtesy is more than welcome, and gets included. Heck, nobody's run off from the food or told it's "for the cool people" either- it's there for whomever can use it, provided they understand it's for everybody. I wish I knew who felt "unwelcome"- I'd do my best to help them feel like part of the group, and I'm guessing somebody's mentioned it to you or it wouldn't have come up. The only "domination" that occurs is that the same people mine there more often than not, but it's by no means exclusive.
It's probably a good thing nobody has to run past you who to "vote off the island", particularly when the situation there is far from the Lord pf the Flies scenario you seem to have pictured.
In most MMO's, group endeavours always require the need to make a team first and it can cause problems.
They become exclusive, or people don't ask to join because of shyness, because they're a much lower level and various other reasons. Or they get refused because the existing players are friends.
I appreciated the fact that in Glitch, group play didn't require this.
However, if everyone gets used to working together within a party, then the picnic blanket idea is an extremely good idea.
Not sure how it could be implemented but what about being able to create a group table, picnic blanket or similar but you can't take from it unless you have contributed something. I remember we used to have after school parties where everyone would "bring a plate" - worked pretty well IRL.
Yes, @meheret, we go out of our way to welcome folks and invite them to participate. This isn't a "cool kids only" thing; it's an "OHAI, we all figured out a really nice dynamic and you may as well party and chat while you mine" thing. I've made more friends in that mine than anywhere else in the game, and hope to continue doing so.
However, coming in and stealing an entire minefloor's worth of food, or insulting other players, is not going to be well-received. If that makes us a "clique" well, then we're a clique. An extremely large, friendly, welcoming and generous clique that doesn't like thieves and rude people. I like the idea of a picnic blanket that limits how many items each player could take...but I would still want to share the treats with everyone, not just certain people. That's not how I play this game.
I very much like the picnic basket idea. I'm not sure about 'contribute something and then be free to take what you want' working to stop thieves, though, as theoretically you could drop a bean and then take everything, which I don't think would be enough of a deterrent. My idea would be to have a debuff of about a minute, which would stop you from taking another item, each time you take something.
As long as their have been mmo's, their have been knobrots who have taken advantage of the situation.
Its a shame people sometimes behave like that, but its the nature of the beast unfortunately.
i do worry about this "collective mining" though, seems a bit territorial tbh;p if hes just blasting through to get somewhere else he isnt going to know your ettiquette, is he?
not that im defending him, far from it, just trying to offer an alternative explanation. maybe he didnt know if was for a party?..maybe he thought someone just left it lying around;p
i dunno, im a noobie so ive not come across a party yet, but i guess a bit of common sense would indicate to me at least, that amount of food was put down for a reason..
We welcome everyone who comes in! We say hey, have some food and please announce the sparklies when they spawn. That's really all we ask. We try to do this every time someone new pops in, and we greet returning folks. It's not territorial, it's just an exceptionally social mine with some dedicated regulars.
We don't freak out if a noob accidentally takes too much food; we say something like "hey, this is a party, could you please share with everyone?" I don't even mind if someone who doesn't have much takes one of each item and leaves nothing in return - we're all poor at some point in the game.
This jerkface came back to steal more AFTER being called out for stealing literally I dunno, 15 earthshakers, 10 flaming humbabas, 10 awesome stew, buncha flummery, etc. etc....and cursed at me for calling him out. To keep the thread on-topic, a picnic blanket (or somesuch) would deter such behavior anywhere an impromptu party broke out. I get that public streets are public, and all that implies....but in a game that actively encourages social and co-op activities there should be some protections even on public streets from antisocial behavior.
I love the idea of a picnic table where you can pick up only one item at a time or maybe your only pick-up choice is to eat (not put it in your bag). In fact an option to pick up and eat (no bag in transit needed) would be really nice at parties. You can only pick up one and you have to eat it now. If someone is really starving, I do not think anyone would begrude him the food - but to take it all from a common pile to sell or donate is the act of a sociopath.
@kookaburra +1 awesome idea! After all, presumably that's what the food at parties is intended for - eating, not hoarding. Sounds like an excellent solution.
I love the picnic basket/blanket/table idea where you can deposit as much food as you want but not grab it and run. I wasn't Glitching during beta but it seems like spontaneous parties were a big part of the game and I love that. We won't stop having mining parties even with people swooping in because it's part of how we play Glitch. And I don't think drastic measures are required, we have parties almost nightly and have only had problems with two people, but I do think that new party features would always be welcome.
