Thought Bubbles over players heads

Mine would say "Help me mind this rock"
This way you'll know a player doesnt want you mining THEIR rock they can have "this is mine" or "get your own rock" over their heads that way they won't have to get all worked up over a ROCK.
Just a thought, thank you.

  • You mean like a kind of speech bubble that could linger as long as you have it posted? For instance, you're mining a Sparkly Rock and have a message for the entire duration of that process? Because that sounds like a great idea, especially since a lot of Glitches are very polite and a quick message like that would be effective.

  • Wouldn't really solve anything, because that's just as easily typed into local chat and people would still get frustrated about selfishness. I suppose it might make communication easier but it wouldn't solve the 'get all worked up over a ROCK' issue. I mean, some people would still mine rocks already occupied, and other people would still get worked up about it.

  • Cupcake, unfortunately I think you might be right. I've never really had a problem with this, but I could see how things might get feisty, regardless of a well-intentioned speech bubble.

The one thing it might help is by not cluttering the local chat, because it would only be noticed if you were in direct view of the speech-bubble over the player. Certainly couldn't hurt.

  • Yes, that way you'll know that some people feel that its theirs and theirs alone.

  • How to attract griefers:

Put a sign over your avatar that says: "I promise to get very very upset if you start mining the rock I'm working on".

  • I don't know... people were really upset when there were bubbles over all the animal's and tree's heads, so the devs got rid of it last test. They claimed that it was cluttering up their view too much... I can see them saying the same thing for lasting thought bubbles over everyone's heads. Plus, you never know what someone will choose to write in one of those things... you might not like what you see...

  • +1 shepherdmoon, hadn't even thought of it that way. and EXACTLY, windborn.

The thing is, trogette, there isn't really a communication issue here. People can very easily get across that they don't want someone mining their rock without an automated sign. BUT that wouldn't solve the problem, since people will still mine those rocks. the issue isn't that people don't KNOW, it's that they might not AGREE.

  • @WindBorn: Exactly!  And I may regret admitting it, but I would probably be one of them. I don't think it's reasonable to call dibs on rocks, and just to be contrary, I'd choose a rock with someone screaming "This one's mine!" before an unoccupied one of the same type.

I might have a bit of sympathy for someone whose bubble said something like "Please let me have this one -- it's my fifth attempt on the whatever quest :( "  But anybody can say that, whether it's true or not.

(Background: I've made a habit of only starting to mine unoccupied rocks, but I wouldn't dream of putting up any fuss if someone came to share a rock I was mining.)

  • It makes me sad to hear it, but unfortunately I think you're all right - there will always be people who will encroach on other those liberties, and calling attention to them is like putting a "take from me first" sign up in neon lights...

And if it's something that's happening in beta, with a smaller number of people, it could be rampant when the game goes live. I suppose there will be some sort of equilibrium though at some point.

Frankly, griefers bewilder me. This is the first MMO I've had any interest in, and while I've read about and seen the havoc that griefers wreak, I'm disappointed about it. Not that two people mining the same rock makes either of them a griefer necessarily. Ah well. That's a separate question altogether.

And Shepherdmoon, I had completely forgotten about the bubbles from the test before last - those were a bit of a nuisance indeed.

  • i like this idea, but more for working around the limited emoting capabilities of the avatars [laughing, angry, scared] than for calling dibs on rocks.

might not need any text at all. just emotive symbols in the bubbles.

  • Thanks (you guys) I appreciate your responding to my idea
and I promise not to mine anyone Elses rock ever ever again, Honest I didn't know it was considered such an act of (?) violating someone else's space.
