How would you describe Glitch?

I was at a film shoot as a PA yesterday and had a whole lot of down time. So (instead of doing my own actual work), I played Glitch. A bunch of the cast and crew would walk by me and ask "What's that? It looks very very cool."
It got me thinking about how to describe it to people. The best I've come up with is "Take Farmville and exploded it. Then mate it with EVE Online. Then get Salvador Dali to play Little Big Planet for a few hours and have him design it."
Still not quite right.

  • I'd call Glitch a mushroom trip, side-scroll mmo with focus on farming, collecting and general social building.

Can't wait for this game to launch, been wanting to play all day :-/

  • I'm really in two minds about the Farmville comparison thing. Pro: it gets instant recognition and a wide fanbase. Con: waaaay too much nicey-niceyness implied.

  • Glitch isn't Farmville. <== One of the best things you can say about it.

  • Best description I've heard so far...:

    "For a really long time
    11 giants walked around.
    They thought of funny things
    until their thinking came alive.

And that's what this game is
    you're inside their thoughts.
    Go and make them bigger
and we'll play a long while.

And we call the giants by their names:
There's Humbaba and FriendlyAlphTiiZille and Lem
    Grendaline and Spriggan
    CosmaPot and Maaaaaaaab...

And that's what this game is
    you're inside their thoughts
    go and make them bigger
and we'll play a long while."

  • Yeah, I think if glitch gets a farmville-type-game rep it wouldn't be good.  There's kind of an anti-farmville movement out there... I don't want Glitch to be associated with it in any way.  Although, it's kind of funny that there is a lizard in the bureaucratic hall playing farmville.

  • (For me...Glitch is one of the best virtual things ever happened!)

  • I've told friends that it's like 'Animal Crossing', if it had been created by Douglas Adams, crossed with 'Mario Bros.' (the original Atari arcade game).

  • ^ Though that might be overstating it. Glitch is not quite up to that pace (but it easily could be!).

  • Well, I would NOT describe it how Wikipedia does! I would describe it as a virtual world where you interact with the game and with other players to sustain, shape and grow your character and the world.

  • As cute as the Glitch song is, it doesn't describe the gameplay at all.

I prefer to think of it as Dr. Seuss's take on a Farmville MMO.

  • When I showed the trailer to my friends, they compared the game to LittleBigPlanet. Since I have never played LittleBigPlanet, I don't know how it differs, but the wikipedia description of LittleBigPlanet makes it sound so very similar. Some of the landscapes here have definitely reminded me of Dr. Seuss the most, with a touch of Dali. Generally speaking, I have absolutely NO idea how to describe this game to my friends.. and would like to know what to say :(

  • Definite -1 to any Farmville comparison (or any other game that spams your FB friends).  I also take issue with it being described as an RPG - it's never struck me as very role-play-y.

  • To me it's more Monty Python than Dr. Seuss...maybe it's the egg plants.

  • I say a cross between World of Warcraft (for the MMO and quests aspect) and Animal Crossing (for it's sweet cartoon nature).

  • ...Wait, did you compare it to EVE Online? The EVE Online with guild infiltration, phony investment banks, virtual assassinations, piracy, corrupt developers, and sixty-billion ISK Titans? That EVE Online, the stockbrokers in space EVE Online?

I like Down10's description of the game, though I would compare the platforming more to LittleBigPlanet, especially since Mario Bros. has many more enemy NPCs.

I can see how people would call the game an RPG, seeing as there's a multitude of skills that can shape your character. And you can choose what your character becomes in the world of Glitch, whether it be a miner, or farmer, or bureaucrat... But yeah, maybe not plot-heavy enough in terms of characterisation to fit the old-school definition.

Unless I'm wrong and players can side with certain Giants which will affect the outcome of a Ragnarok at the end of the game. (I'd side with the giantess for a fondness of lemons...) Which would be awesome, but I can see why the devs wouldn't do that.
