The "JOY" of being a Newbee! What was your first day on Glitch like?

I joined the Glitch family June 12, 2011, after being invited, then invited again and again, by friends who are beta testers.  Prior to this I checked the Glitch web-site to find out what this "Glitch" is all about. I did not go to facebook, twitter or any other site other than just a "general" outsider. I found Glitch on the web-site and watched the trailer and was not very impressed. I also read the entire page for more information. I thought "what is this? a cartoon type game", and "Eh! not for me!".  Now after playing a short while I feel the "trailer" did not give the true essence of this game if thats what it is called? It did not show the Avatar as being the strong character that it is. Ok that being said, I decided to give it a try only because of my friends and especially one particular friend (whom I won't name) who actually stalked me! I'm laughing out loud right now because I dearly love this friend whom I've known for sometimes from other game sites:) Awesome lady!

I am accepted by Tiny Speck and I join. I get to make a Avatar aww! which I love, I go through nose's and eye's and lips that twist go up and  down and I am having the funest (if its a word) time ever! I get to choose ears and a dress! Oh! I join a Group! I am in heaven! OMGoodness! such bliss! Alright now ready to Gooo!

Now I find myself in some kind of ledge, I can move a few glitch feet to the left and a few glitch feet to the right. I learn to do some dirt tending , how to hug a pig! how to put lotion on a butterfly! I learn to jump! Fine! I think I learned what I need too and decide this ledge I need to move out from? But how? I tried to jump out but nothing?-- Two day's! I don't know why so long but it took me two day's to try to figure how to get out! Just as I begin to feel like poor Glitch solder and feel my new eyes tear up, my new lips quiver, I think to my self "I am in a trench hole" so crawl out! I begin to look to the sides of this what I shall term as a " trench hole " and see some rocks sort of strategically placed going up! and so I push the arrow keys up! and whee! There I go!  TA! DA!  I am out world! Free!

Footnote: I always had the option of using the help site, but I figure if I do not know how to get out of this situation I am in big trouble learning to play Glitch!
I highly recommend that www.glitch-strategy.com be on the front page, it gives a better perspective of this site.

  • lmao ...great story, Joy!
It certainly made me laugh. I am so glad you found your way out of that hole.

Welcome to Glitch! May your future endeavors be less taxing than your first two!

  • oh ow!

Trench Foot can be so painful Joy, but so many of us have had similar predicaments (maybe not 2 days worth!) and it gets easier the longer you're here.

    Welcome!

  • Hilarious, Joy! xD

Thanks for mentioning the Wiki, btw. In face, I know many members have worked long and hard on a special 'Everything newbies should know about the game' page, called Start Here. It really does feature all the key aspects of the game, and I thoroughly recommend it to newbies if they're not quite sure how to play or what the purpose of the game is. :)

But sounds like you got the jist of it, Joy, which is wonderful! Happy Glitchin' (you'll be itchin' and twitchin' by the end of this week!)!

  • Thank you all; I think trouble was also not being familiar with the computer key's that I needed to use as well as a slow computer. But the experience was delightful yet frustrating!
I too am curious as to : What others first day on Glitch was like?

  • I just joined about two or three weeks ago, so I remember my first day still...

I remember how excited I was, because I hadn't been checking my email regularly and to... be totally honest I kinda forgot that I had signed up to get an invite (hey I just started my first job ;_; give me a break), and I suddenly logged in on the right day because I had gotten an invite and the site was open! So I excitedly logged on and played for a while... I was totally lost for the first few days, but there were a few people who gave me things out of nowhere to help me out (people are so kind :') thank you guys) and I was sent the link to the Wiki as well and it just was a really great first experience for me with the community. I didn't really have anything majorly exciting happen, but the past times I've been on it I've learned a lot and I've met a lot of great people, and I'm so happy to be here!

I hope once I get more currants and in the future when the site's live I'll be able to help newbies like the awesome people here helped me! :) It just left me with a really great first impression of the site, and I really like that about a new site.

Also I really love the Wiki too. It's like the Glitch Bible to me, haha.

  • I've been in since March 10 but well I remember the first days. Pretty much I was lost and asking nonstop questions of a couple of sweet seasoned Glitchers who were hanging out with some of my friends and me. But what I remember most is laughing and laughing till I thought my sides would split at the quests and the things the trees and rocks and animals said to me and the descriptions of things...crying tears of laughter in our group's chat window together. And frankly, I haven't really quit laughing yet, even if it has simmered down a bit. Though when everything started telling us the backstory I was back to sidesplitting laughter again (Pot and lemons, anyone? Conspiracy theory bubble trees?). And while that remains a constant and I love the gameplay itself, what has been the best is that nearly everyone I've met has been fun, welcoming, community minded. Sure, we have occasional annoying incident (and then debate it ad nauseum in the forums), but mainly...the people rock. I'm so glad noobs are finding this game wonderful still!

  • My first day was so busy.  Rascal greeted me and showed me how to jump sort of lol and so many basic moves, she has helped me up until last game day (thanks sweetie I really stilll appreciate all the help)  My great friend hap helped me get papers and buy a home on my very first day which as most of you know is the first hurdle so as to not lose everything you own.  I loved this game from day one and still do.

  • I got signed up the 1st of April, I think. It was a Friday I experienced my first game session.
I popped out of a tree trunk. "Pretty!" I remember thinking. Then, after several thing and a short tutorial, I found myself all alone, in some Groddle Heights hills. So I followed street signs. And went around in circles. If I was there IRL, I'm sure I would have had a pretty puzzled look on my face. Finally it was time to go to bed, and I slept thinking that I'll figure the rest of the place out the next morning. The next morning, the game closed. I was pretty disappointed, because that meant I couldn't figure out the place. Oh well, no problem, guess I can figure out the home page. And so, I began making friends and began my rise to success!
Ok, exaggerating a lil, but you get my drift.

  • My first day was March 10th, it was very unexpected and I didn't have much time as I was going out that day. I learned how to harvest, pet and nibble then had to leave. I didn't even get out of the tutorial till the following day.
Greeted hugged and given a few helping items by jdawg I made my way into the world for a short time and learned a little more before my first experience of a reset. I was lucky in that it was so soon that I didn't have much to lose, but that little, plus the ingenuity of the game and the presence of people who made me feel welcome, both old friends and new, were all enough to make me impatient for my next chance to get in for more.

  • I can't recall when my first day was but it was between March 10 and March 29, 2011.  The first item in my account history was a gift for Alpha testers which was dated March 10.  The next item after that was a FREE to subscribers pair of shoes on March 29.  I was at Faunasphere through March 15 and doubt I played Glitch until after that date (I may be wrong).

I recall my first day somewhat.  I remember I was a bit confused.  First off I was not used to using a keyboard for actions and couldn't get my Glitch to move.  I asked for Help in the Help Chat but could not get an answer for some time (lots of chit-chat there and little help).  Finally someone told me to use the arrow keys and I got moving.  It took no time at all to discover that trees liked petting and would give me food.  Then I discovered that pigs and chickens also liked petting.  I wanted to move up and down as well as right and left but discovered that did not work so I admired the background from a distance.

I was used to having a Home and wondered where my house was.  I soon discovered that I would have to buy a home and would need at least 1,000 currants to do that.  The Test finished before i got more than a couple hundred currants.  I waited for the next test.  I did not like the game very much at that point due mostly to the keyboard difficulties and the inability to get a Home.  I worried the whole week about my little Glitch who remained in the game, homeless and all alone on a strange street.

When the next test began about a week later, I was determined to get a home.  I petted everything I could but made few currants and I discovered that I had to learn some things.  When I finally got 1,000 currants, I tried to buy an apartment at GFJ.  That's when I discovered that I needed papers.  The cost of papers cut into my housing allowance so I had to earn more currants.  I couldn't mine because I had no pick.  I spent more currants to get a pick and then couldn't mine because I had not learned Mining and did not have a "fancy" pick.  Needless to say, the second test ended with no Home and few currants.

It seemed to me that at every turn I had to spend my hard earned currants on something.  I got too hungry and had to buy food, ca-ching.  No Home, no money...  By the third test I was about ready to quit.  I was not making much progress, I was hungry, I was poor and I was stupid.  I had to learn Bureaucratic Arts.  Finally I had the skill and the currants to buy a Home but I had to buy more papers first.  I think it was during this third test that I was able to buy a Home.  I had finished some quests, had papers, had just enough currants to buy a tree house and moved into it in Groddle Forest.  I was poor again but happy, I had a Home at last!  After that things picked up and I began to become addicted.  Those were hard times but I persisted and am glad I did.  I have enjoyed every test since that third one!  Now I live in Alakol in a nice medium villa with elevator and animal pen.  Life is Good in Ur!

  • Everything was a total confusing mess, kept banging into trees at the end of its road haha. Was going to quit so many times because of the confusion but through face book good pals they taught a lot of us everything we needed to start. Now like the end no more skills to do waiting for the sign to open, not too sure what or where I will go in this next week.

  • I came in on March 10 as well, a Faunasphere refugee raft-full of sad players looking for a new game. It was a 3-day belated birthday present and I loved it from the start! It was weird, quirky and I felt like a real idiot running crazily after the butterflies (oh, those pesky butterflies were THE WORST to try and catch back in the alpha days!). I had never been in a sidescrolling game before (besides true arcade games like Rampage back in the '80s) and it took me forever to learn how to move and jump. And, yes, I STILL get stuck in some of the caverns and climbs. Old brain, new tricks I suppose!

It was strange playing a humanoid creature after being a number of small, cute animals in the former game. I especially had to get used to the butt-scratching. And even now, I live in understated fear that I will scratch my own a** at work when I am just standing around waiting for someone else to just DO something! I find it hilarious now.

    The game has certainly made me look differently at food. And, yes, in one pre-opening frenzy I marched into my local Starbucks and ordered a Cloudberry Frappucino. Hey, it was orange on the sign and it must've sounded delicious to my frazzled brain cells. I can only hope that when Glitch opens to the public that I will meet other players (working at Starbucks) who will laugh with me rather than at me for my real-life foibles! :}

    Happy gaming, Joy!

  • LOL! yes! the butt scratching is so cute! In the game of course; In real life, I can only imagine what team workers would think as I butt scratched while speaking at a conference on stage! ha!
    Thank you Mistress!

    Cloudberry Frappucino! LOL, laughter? Priceless!

  • I still remember my first day! After I created my avatar..I ran,  jumped and laughed like a kid...I fell in love with my hair blowing in the wind...It was very impressive to have those freedoms back visually...I missed my inner child, and Glitch has given her back!
Most actions and quests were easy to do.They kept me busy and entertained. Every now and again there would be a roadblock, and JDawg would be right there with a smile and a kind word while he was pulling me out of some snafu or another...I do miss him in game!

  • I joined in late May. I'm not a gamer in anyway, so truly: I was lost. Two things lured me back in. First -- the outfits! For some reason, finding out that I could clothe and style my avatar made me take a second look.

Second -- The Cat Face. He helped me so much! He gave me a few tips and would answer any questions I had. I don't think I would have gotten out of level one, two or three if it hadn't been for him. So thanks, TCF.

So it was really my second time that became my first time. And it was fun.

  • It is true there are some great people in this game! Very kind, giving, and helpful too!
Truly I am enjoying each and every post on this thread, LOL, I am so glad to know I am not the only one that had a "Glitch" experience their first day of the game!

  • I joined in April, and I distinctly remember 2 disappointments - building my avatar "Ooh how boring - I'm playing this game as a wee girl "  and when I got in the game I found the 'platform' style side to side movement unimpressive " yuk, am I playing Sonic or Roland goes Digging?" (2 games I never got the hang of) Needless to say within about half an hour I was hooked, and after that first test, once I went to the wardrobe and started dressing up my Glitchy, her unique style started to emerge, I say her but she's turning into a bit of a her/im (in scots pronounced hurrum - a phrase coined in the sixties to describe those men who grew their hair!)
I'd never have got through my first test without Hburger who showered me with gifts and showed me how to use Spinach to get up the cliff and away. She also showed me how to talk! I was jabbing away at the keyboard but couldn't get the speech bubbles to appear :)
I always remember that when I come across newbies in the game - spinach, awesome stew and direction towards the local chat.
