Having keyboard/mouse problems? Try this! [update: enabled for everyone]

Update: Are you using Chrome? Please read this thread.

If you're having "focus" problems where the game seems to stop responding to the keyboard or mouse, try this URL and report back whether things get better, stay the same, or are worse (and what those issues are/were, which web browser you are using, and what operating system):

[link removed, it is enabled for everyone]

Please only report problems related to the above; nothing about performance, house decorations, the Rube, etc.

Thank you for testing!

  • I was only able to take a step or two and would then come to a halt. I couldn't move any further, no matter how many times (or for how long) I held the arrow keys. When I jumped, I would be able to take a step or two and the whole process would start over again. As soon as I went to the link-site, I was able to move freely, again. Still, laggy because of junk build-up but that's not material to this problem.
I'm also running the latest Chrome browser on XP with a Pentium 4 at 1.7 Ghz and 2 GB of RAM.

  • ... I thought it was just me! I mean, maybe I forgot to click before I got distracted! Should I click again? Maybe I need to click over here...

Oh man, I'll have to test this at work, since that's where it tends to happen. Thanks!

  • Well done!  This is the first and only time I have been able to use my street sign and not lose my arrow keys.  That is for the first time upon entering the game.  I have always lost my arrows when using the sign for the first time after entering the game.  I usually have to reload on the first street.  After that, I can play for a while and enter other streets before finally having to reload due to lag.

    PC, WIN7, FF14.0.1, Flash 11.3.300.265

ETA:  Did not prevent the loss of arrows or the freeze that happens after Teleport.

I honestly did not see any improvements. Still the same.

  • Just an FYI for TS:  I have had no (recent) problems with losing control of my Glitch whilst using Firefox on a WinXP system, but I have recently been having these troubles every time when I log on with Firefox on a Windows 7 system.

  • WinXP - Chrome

Everything worked fine for 5 minutes, then the tab function between game and chat stoped working, also the enter key. Reloaded and everything worked again, then frozed 5 minutes later. Rinse and repeat.

... yes, WinXP, stop looking at me like that.

  • I was using this Saturday evening when my computer froze, then crashed.  I can now only boot into safe mode.  Windows Explorer now seems to be messed up, & if I can't fix it I may need to get a new computer.  No idea if the two are related, but thought I should mention it.  Windows 7 Starter, Chrome 20, HP Mini 110.

  • I have a MacBook Pro running Chrome on Lion 10.7.4. My problem with the regular game was that sometimes after using a chat window or naming my tower or editing a note, the game would ignore my keyboard. Sometimes it was only certain keys, sometimes it was every one that I tried. I tried the "better focus" link a few times and used chat and renamed my tower and edited notes and didn't lose my keyboard. Performance seems at least as good with the new focus handling. Seems smoother all-around somehow, especially walking around in my over-stuffed house. There's no downside. I thought there was a slight delay on picking things up, but it disappeared.

  • OS X Lion, Chrome Version 20.0.1132.57

I'm noticing improvement such that it's "back to how it was before" it started getting terrible over the past week. I'm not getting the random going into decorate mode in my house, or the "mode" where I can only move my character left and right until I click the screen. EDIT: Experienced this again. Bummer.

However, I'm still getting the age-old problem of not being able to tab from Group Chat to the game after sending a message. It's intermittent, and command-enter is a workaround, but it happens.

  • Tonight is the first time in two weeks that I could actually play. From loading so slow to lag and getting kicked out alot to nearly perfect tonight. Windows 7,  Chrome. Came in this way last night and had a terrible time, kicked out over and over again if I clicked on display boxes.

  • Huh. This link is an improvement for me over clicking the regular "play" button, in Firefox 14.0.1 under Ubuntu whatever-the-heck-is-current ... and still seems to be an improvement, even after the update went live for everyone earlier. I guess it's just in my head? But the difference is noticeable.

  • Having a bit of trouble this morning and had to resort to new battery in cordless mouse which helped a bit, the sensitivity is extreme when I'm dragging things if I pass a little too close to a bag it drops stuff into it but I was aiming for the bag next to it.  Still, much better than before the release of the above and general release.

  • Windows XP  Chrome 20.0.1132.57, Flash 11.3.300.265

Used to get freezing in backyard jumping between two garden plots, not happening to same degree any more but there's a shuddering that looks like an earthquake every once in awhile.
Still getting 1- 2 second freeze when jujus show up in ancestral lands; worse when Rube shows up there.

Am I mistaken in thinking that using shift-f to open inventory  could also be used to close it? because now no shortcut  key will do that. I have to use the mouse to close inventory search. ( nevermind-it appears to be working now)

On the whole, I say it feels better.

Seems to work better for me. I notice it most when I interact with the botlers. And sometimes when harvesting. At first I thought it was my keyboard, because left and right arrow always seem to work. But spacebar and enter wouldn't. Later I learned if I clicked the game, it would return focus, so def not the keyboard. :)  Whenever I can't jump, I just click the game and all is well for a while.

This seems to be a somewhat recent development. I think my problems only started a few weeks ago. Strangely, you said you implemented the code for all? I had focus problems just today. With the botler. Then I switched to your recommended link and it worked better.

  • Hey, I've suddenly been having a LOT of lag, slowing down, walking aimlessly after I let go of the arrow button (and click the ground a few times in a vain attempt to go the other damn way), and my "actions" happening (harvesting, etc.) before the "harvesting/petting/digdig" letters pop up. When they do, they go through the whole harvesting letter-fill, and so it takes me twice as long to do anything. The JuJus had a field day with me this afternoon.

This all started today. I'm using Safari.

  • Clicking the regular 'Enter the World' button, I still get lag, walking off to almost the end of a street. I've also noticed the action words filling up, then waiting as the actual action starts after the indicator is done, the sound comes with the action and agree it's taking twice as long to do anything. But, if I use the link here, even after the regular button was supposed to work the same, it works better. Less lag, action indicators and the actions themselves synched, less loading time entering new streets. Still a few problems, but overall, the focus link works better. In world for some reason, Alakol music takes forever to load, and the trees/animals/vendors/quoins happen painfully slowly. No other place takes as long, no idea why. In home streets it's the ones with the dark or spooky groddle music and toxic moon. Those take about twice as long to load (compared to every other background/music) enough I can even get a mouse click to move me forward. If I try to wait until I can do keyboard, it is at least a real world minute. It is better than Alakol, which is just maddening if I'm just running to a vendor.

  • Just tried to play, delayed movements and reload the game? 5 times.  Nite Nite.
Posted 5 months ago by Priscilla Parsley Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Update: My enter key stopped responding after I sent mail a few minutes ago, but it came back without needing a reload. I'm pretty sure I don't have trolls living under the keys, but maybe I should double check. (Chrome on a MacBook pro).

ETA: The most recent time I loaded the game I had no keyboard recognition at all from the very beginning.

EATA: Brain fail? I thought the regular enter the world link now pointed to the better error handling thang. If no, sorry. Nothing to see here.
Posted 5 months ago by Aleph Zero Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yesterday I did use this link, when I got lag, I reloaded. I tried several more times, but each time got the error message as soon as the game loaded. So I went back to the home page and clicked "Enter World" and the same thing happened. I don't remember how it was all split, but I tried refreshing/reclicking to enter the world ten times before it would let me in without problem. I don't know if it's related to the other problems I mentioned, but putting it here in case it is.

  • Mac OS 10.6.8 and Safari 5.1.7 - It just loaded faster and I was able to move after loading...Normally I have to interact with inventory in order to move...I will use it several more times to see if it is indeed a cure...Have had a lot of lag problems lately, as other players mentioned.

  • I'm still having this problem -- in all three of my browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox). It's not a dealbreaker but it can be a bit annoying. In Chrome, especially, I have loss of keyboard function whenever I enter the world. I definitely lose all keyboard control whenever I get any sort of achievement. I had an open help case at one point but was directed to this thread instead.

Just wanted you to know the problem hasn't been fixed for everyone!

  • It was better on Safari but I noticed last night that moving from the chat window to the game was not working... still funky on Chrome and Firefox. What happened? Is there something we can do in-game to reset the situation?

  • Ever since I updated Firefox to 14.0.1 the whole browser has been kind of terrible, but Glitch especially has gotten worse with glacial loading times and keyboard freezing and occasionally, the browser hanging too.

  • Ever since this update - occasionally during gameplay all the keys but the arrow keys stop working. They keys work fine in the chat area, but not in the character area.  I never had this issue before the update, using the latest Chrome on Windows.

  • I'm using Chrome w/ standalone (NPAPI) Flash version  11,3,300,271 -- I'm getting "double" recognition of keypresses, e.g. hitting backtick to search inventory opens the search field, but also puts a backtick in, trying to feed the batterflys 5 meat ends up registering 55.

  • Lately I get the 'can't jump' thing a lot. I had it the other day upon entering a card location which was annoying - usually I just refresh and no harm done. It has to do with only having one hand and hitting some wrong key combo I think. I'll try the 2xAlt trick next time I screw up, Cad - maybe it will help.
