How valuable are herb gardens, really?

I love my new fire bog house, I take good care of my herb garden, tree, fireflies, pig, chicken. But do people really use herbs all that much? Especially now with slower garden times? Are they just for selling to vendors, and not actually much of a money maker?  I'm not complaining, its a homey task, but....

  • I would enjoy them more if I could put them in a vase.  Once I tried them, I really had no more interest.  They take too long to grow and as I live in Alakol I can't grow them at home so, they hold little value for me.

  • Hi Sakmet, the Silverytongue watchamacallit (sorry, being lazy looking up the correct name), is useful as it will give you a bonus on successful completion of a quest (including races).  You can take it at any time and the buff will remain until your successful completion of whatever quest you complete next.  I have tried to remember using these when I have a quest to complete, but have forgotten a few times when racing.  Not a problem though as I keep losing them anyway LOL.

The hairball will speed you up, but I think that might only be on the horizontal - Striatic could probably fill you in more about that one as he has tested this out a fair bit.  I've not really used these much.

Purple of course, seems to just be for amusement.

That's just 3 of them.  As to their monetary value, I guess that all boils down to demand and supply, together with a player's need or want at the time.  So far, I've not found any real financial benefit to them, nor from a shrine donation point of view.

  • I imagine herbs will end up having more uses in the future.

  • I hope so, because I can't sell any of mine and they are piling up in my spare room!

  • They are all pretty:)

Purple flower is fun once, maybe twice - I hope that it will be usable in other ways later.

    Silvertongue seems to be useful.

And I was pretty disappointed with gandlevery - energy boost is really really small, only few (3?) energy points after few seconds. :(
    (Encyclopedia says:
Munching on this will give you the Gandlevery Boost buff (an awakening energy boost)

  • Thanks for feedback guys... I'm gonna fool around more with the silvertongue. The Gandlevery gives you less energy than garden crops....
I'll keep my herb garden up, though. Though inefficient, I prefer to have a growing garden in my home, just for decoration....
I guess they make nice gifts.

  • Aha but we have also been told by stoot in some forum or other (heaven help me if I can find it; wait, I'll look) that potion making is coming. Surely that will involved the herbs, right? Aha, found the quote:

Phase two of this was going to be a set of garden-enhancing potions to be released with potionmaking ("SOON!"-ish) but we'll see about bumping that up somewhat so additional yield or growing-time tweaks can happen before potionmaking is ready.Posted 4 days ago by stoot barfield

So I am assuming or hoping that the herbs indeed will be useful more later on:)

  • Yep...me too RM. :) Always hoping there is a method behind the madness :)

  • I am mass producing the Yellow Crumb flower, I think it is really useful for times when I don't have anything to donate and I want to still lower my skill time.  Also Silvertongue is pretty useful.  I just started growing Gandlevary, I don't use it as a primary source of energy but I'm sure it will come in handy if I'm low on energy and need a quick boost.

Other than that, like other people have mentioned, I'm sure they will be useful in the future.  I personally only eat pig meat for energy and I have never needed anything more than that (I have a porkload of pigs and like 6 meat collectors) so growing any "ingredients" or using produce for food was never useful to me.

  • It was pretty lame for me :( I had a house in Chakra Phool but decided that potatoes were more profitable than herbs so now im back in Alakol...
ETA: I actually use the rubeweed while mining for more drops occasionally however

  • It would be nice if we could make an herb shake and eat them all at once...

  • I have a house with steps in it - it looks lovely with a bunch of flowers artfully arranged (ok dropped) on each step.

  • I find the hairball one comes in handy in Baqala, Choru and that Z named location when you are trying to race from street to street to get through there quickly since there is the time limit. Might have used it too to run from a project to get to a vendor a street or two away and back...lol.

Thanks for the tip on the Silverytongue...hadn't tried it since the others had a time limit...figured that one did too, and was trying to figure how to time taking it right before completing things. Glad to know I don't have to do that...

Have used the yellow crumb ones for the learning boost, but Pungent Sunrise drinks work about the same...

Good to know on the Rubeweed...was wondering how to be using it...considering I do a fair bit of mining, might have to try it there now.

And yes, the purple ones are pretty for decorating...not really much else after your first couple purple episodes...

ETA: I think most are still trying to figure out how to best use herbs...so the demand for them might not quite be there yet...but as folks figure out...hey, I can use a hairball for this, or a rubeweed for that...the market may be better...also, as they build more uses for them, which they likely will, that should help too.

  • I just read in another thread that feeding one yellow flower to a batterfly gets 3 guano.  If that's right, that 's pretty useful.
