Buying credits vs Subscribing

Hi!

With the new arrival of housing in the game (which is AWESOME!!!) there is a lot more focus on credits than before. I'm not against giving money to TS since I enjoy Glitch so much, and since the beginning.

My only concern and question is: What's the best bang for the buck? Should I simply buy a whole lot of credits or subscribe?

I don't see the whole point of subscribing to Glitch, it gives some credits, and access to subscriber-only stuff? But that's all?

I need some advice about this, thanks!

  • I like my subscription ^_^ It also makes the "subscription only" options available.

  • You get more credits per unit money from a subscription than from plain buying credits. It's like $11 for 400 credits and 50 teleportation tokens from a subcription, or you can buy 400 credits for $25 outside of a subscription.

The ability to purchase credits mostly just exists for those who have a subscription and want more credits, really.

The teleportation tokens allow you to teleport for free (no energy cost) without a cooldown. You can use them 5 times per game day. You need Teleportation I to use them. Really that's the most useful part of a subcription, I will probably never learn higher than Teleportation I because of it.

You also get access to subscriber-only clothes and furniture upgrades. Some of them are free, some of them cost credits, but none of them can be purchased by a subsciber for any amount of credits.

  • Suscribing is for those who would like to:

    Support Glitch.
    Get Subscriber Clothes.
    Get Subscriber furniture.
Get TP Tokens. Which, isn't too much of an avdantage (Glitch doesn't want to give a huge advantage if they buy a membership pack.)

By the way, if you're going to buy any Credits- do it NOW. In Beta. They'll double youre credits once they launch, but I'm sure you know that. ;)

  • There are items that are only available to subscribers (clothing and decorations).  Some of those are free and some cost credits.

There are items available to anyone who plays glitch (clothing and decorations).  Some of those are free and some cost credits.

If you want any of the items marked with a red ribbon, you need to be a subscriber.

If you only want items that don't have a red ribbon, you can simply purchase credits.

  • Subscribing gives you a lil' heart next to your name...
... and every time someone subscribes Stewart spins on his swivel-chair with a "Whheeeeeee!!"

  • Subscribing also provides an allowance of tokens and votes. There has only been one vote so far but the stated plan is to have one a month.

Subscribing, if you are spending regularly, is more cost effective. But really it is a matter of choice. The game is definitely designed that you can completely enjoy the game without paying a dime. If you enjoy playing dress up and decorator and want more options (and teleport a lot) then, yes, you may want to subscribe. If not, no worries. Just being a player adds to the game.

  • "the abilty to purchase credits mostly exists for those who have a subscription and want more credits, really"

I don't think this is true, if you have your eye on just one or two furniture items or clothing items and don't want to commit to paying monthly, or don't care about teleportation tokens or votes, then just buy a credit pack :)
It also should be noted that all credits bought now (in a subscription or credit pack) will be doubled at (re)launch!

  • But there IS no commitment to paying monthly. You can purchase a one month subscription and then immediately cancel, leaving you with a month of subscriber benefits. It's a complete waste of money for a non-subscriber to buy a credit pack.

  • I would agree   Get a subscription  , You also get to vote on things  where you would not have votes  adding  up each month,  And with such a  awesome  game how could you not support  them,  I have never paid  for a online game before  but  have no problem doing this one each month  They are there to support us with everything we need   & do, so the little  they charge  is  sooo worth it

  • it appears that the lowest subscription level does not give any credits per month.  i had originally thought the opposite to be true.  so that would give relevance to buying a credit pack without committing to a subscription (even for a month).

  • "so that would give relevance to buying a credit pack without committing to a subscription (even for a month)."

Except that buying the subscriptions that give credits is still cheaper than buying credits by themselves.

Seriously. Do NOT waste your money on a credit pack unless you already are a subscriber.

  • I recommend getting a subscription. I'm quite happy with mine. It opens up a lot of free subscriber only stuff, and you can always go crazy and purchase even more credits. *embarrassed cough*

  • Wow, so much feedback!

There's some very good advices in there! Totally agree about the uselessness of these credit packs! I'm now a subscriber!

    Thanks

  • I like having a script it makes me feel like I support what is being done for and to the game.  By allowing players that can't afford a subscription to play is a nice gesture and makes me feel good supporting a company like Tiny Speck.

  • Personally I think only fools pay for items on a service in beta... Because there is NO GUARANTEE that it will actually come out of beta...

Plus being in a beta allows to developers to hide behind "Its a beta" as long as they deem necessary...

Something mess up? Its a beta...
Items that you paid for disappear from you inventory? Its a beta...
That feature you loved suddenly gets canned? Its a beta...

You are paying a company while offering them free testing services (something that companies hire QA testers for)
So its a win-win for the developers...

  • As others have said andI've always thought it's a bit odd... There's no point buying individual credits unless you're already a subscriber wanting additional credits because...

The cheapest you can buy individual credits is the 500 for $25 (special) which works out at 20 credits per $. However, for a mere $15 you can purchase a 1 month moly subscription giving you 400 credits (over 26 credits per dollar) PLUS 50 teleportation tokens and BONUS - you get to keep any subscriber only items you purchase with credits during your subscription month.

Seems like a no-brainer to me? No?

  • i personally cannot subscribe but i wish i could.
Posted 7 months ago by Offensive Username Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I have been buying 500-credit packs because I prefer not to be locked into a monthly payment and access to the subscriber-only clothes wasn't that important to me.  Also the $25/500 credits is better than the $8.99/150 credits middle tier subscription which I find more comfortable as far as a monthly recurring expense.  I am thinking of subscribing now with all the interesting housing options for subscribers.  :-)

  • Another plus is you don't have to dig out your credit card all the time.
Think of it this way - it's cheaper than 2 cups of (insert label) coffee and a LOT more worth it !!!!

  • The subscription doesn't "lock" you in. Have you guys ever played an MMO with a subscription before? You pay month-to-month.

You've been wasting your money, Lucille. Like, quite literally.

  • I love being a subscriber! The clothes, the credits and honestly the tokens!! I teleport much more often thanks the lovely tokens! Am very excited for the housing upgrades that are subscriber only :-)

  • When was the transition made to month-to-month? Prior to this, we could pay a sum for a certain time period. Is that not available anymore or am I mis-remembering? Oh boy, have I been gone!!
Posted 7 months ago by Anty-pants Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Anty - that option is still available, or was when I bought my sub, and it's cheaper in the long run to pay for a year in advance, but many people aren't comfortable with paying the whole year's sum up front, so they do month-to-month :)

  • Subscribe!!! its what im getting soon. Moldybel-somehting something something, gives 400 credits, 50 tele tokens, 5 glitch ballots, and i dont konw if this is true, but you might sort of get this every month maybe?
Posted 7 months ago by Taco Assassin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @lucille - If you buy a 1-month moly there is no lock-in. You just pay a single sum and that's it done. It's just the same as if you bought a credit pack but the credits are cheaper, you get teleport tokens and you get access to credit subscriber items! Of course now that I've spelled this out they might change it ;p
Posted 7 months ago by geekybird Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I don't think they will ;) It's in their best interests to make the sub packs attractive. They will get enough people going 'Oh what the heck, let's just leave that sub ticking' to make it just fine and dandy by them to leave it as is.
Posted 7 months ago by Synkronos Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I've got both the Molyb subscription and also a 500-credit package, but the latter was purchased before I subscribed. Reason being I heard that purchases were being doubled after release, and I didn't know how much longer that'd be so I wanted to take advantage of it while I was still eligible :) I got the subscription mainly because I feel like Glitch is a game worth supporting with moneys, and I'll hold onto it as long as it's enjoyable enough to log on at least everyday.

But yes, in terms of value the subscription is definitely more cost-effective.

  • I have a few questions to shoot to all the lovely subscribers here.
Is it worth paying for a year for the nice discount if you're fairly certain you'll be playing for a year (I mean, I've been playing since Sept and still love this game, though I did take a fairly long break in between) but not sure you'd want to subscribe for that long? And what would be the tier you'd recommend (i.e. Molyb vs Copper.)
Posted 7 months ago by Moi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • To each their own but I do think the subscriptions are a better deal. A good way to get a very good deal on your credits if you don't want to spend the full 15 bucks for a full month of moly is to buy the tin subscription and then upgrade it to moly for the last half of the month.

That way it costs around the same as a copper for the month but you get more credits, votes and teleport tokens.
Posted 7 months ago by Melting Sky Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm interested in getting a subscription too, but the $8.99 copper sub works out to Php382 (little more that 1/3 of my monthly internet subscription fee), and a year's sub at copper is more than 3k in local currency... that's quite a big chunk of cash.

I bought a 500 currant pack once, but that was more of a one-time (birthday) splurge... still, I'm getting tempted to shift some budget around and make room for it.

  • I bought myself a year subscription this morning to celebrate my promotion at work.
Posted 7 months ago by Rebelipuff Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @ Aurora: Thanks for the response! I swear I need to look through the site better. Personally, I bought the sub to support TS. I've been on and off, depending on my schedule, but I know I'll keep returning to it! I guess I don't think about it as getting my money's worth but more like, do I like it enough to support the team? And the latter is true (even if I get frustrated with the card system).

  • The 9$ Copper subscription gives 150 credits for each month subscribed.
The 15$ Molybdenum subscription gives 400 credits for each month subscribed.
    Credit pack equivalents below:

    For the 3$ credit pack:
3 credit packs give 120 credits | 5 credit packs give 200 credits

    For the 7$ credit pack:
~1.29 credit packs give 128 credits | ~2.14 credit packs give 214 credits

    For the 10$ credit pack:
0.9 credit packs give 135 credits | 1.5 credit packs give 225 credits

    For the 25$ 400-credit pack:
    0.36 credit packs 144 credits | 0.6 credit packs give 240 credits

    For the 25$ 500-credit pack:
    0.36 credit packs give 180 credits | 0.6 credit packs give 300

Concerning only credits, the 25$ 500-credit pack is a better deal than the Copper subscription. But you won't get access to the subscriber-only options, and you're not given any teleportation tokens and votes.
