You want Ideas - try these for size

There seems to be some desire for user imput into the world of Glitch, much has been suggested as to us being allowed to run riot with the developers tools.

I have been thinking what else could we add that would enhance and allow our creativity to go in game.

1) Art Gallery. A place to create works of art that tranform into actual pictures. These can then be displayed, the most popular could then be made to be sold in the Art Shop and used to decorate our homes, group houses etc. The Artist would get a small commision for each print sold, perhaps as added happiness, XP or just plain ole currants,. A top Artist could recieve an achievement and a trophy.

2) Music Boxes/Juke Box. Player composed pieces such as the georgous Groddle Lullaby by Lelu could be put onto Music Blocks or Discs to be sold in a music shop, or downloaded to play on crabpods (like ipods but more snappy) again rewards for most popular see above.

3) The writers among us would need a book shop where short stories could become actual books that we could add to our homes, chance here for some small short glitch stories / poetry plays ect, . We would need to build bookshelves or a bookcase. but first we need to fill the bookshop. Again rewards for most popular see above

or / also

We could have maybe a library where we can go read and earn xp for each book read, there could be a book hunt quest with books hidden amongst the many that actually tell a back story or a giants tale or some such so not only a resource to learn but a fun treasure hunt too. Complete the quest earn the book.

4) Photography, if we can have a simple in game camera, imagine the pics we could take, seen a great place, or a fun event get a good pic and bingo, oppotunity to make prints for the Art shop, or to decorate a wall in your home, or create a group photo to put in your group house/lodge. We could make our own photo albums too.

  • I play another game online which also uses Flash. There is a Painter on Facebook that is pretty cool... people in this other game have entire art galleries, and a thriving art business with buying and selling of the in-game canvas. I've seen some fantastic paintings made there.  =)

  • Love the art gallery idea!!!

  • I love these.
And the problem with them can be summarized with one word.

    Penises.

People will make penises. Or should "Penises!" Or write "Penis penis penis."

Now, don't get me wrong. I have nothing against them. They are just fine. But I'm not sure if I want them in Glitch. I wish we lived in a wonderful mature enough world that folks could balance humor and tact and good taste (you can also do bad taste but in clever ways).

If there was a middle ground. A set of tools (a mini music making tool for blocks... some sort of art tools... maybe something like Colorforms) that give room to play but won't allow badly scrawled penis.

(Although people tend to find a way.)

I am not being negative. I want these sort of things to happen very much.

  • @ Lord Bacon-o

Yes people will make penises, a cucumber and a couple of cherris or whatever, but would people want to buy such a thing? Most likely not so they would not make it into the Art Shop and thus would not become in game items, If the Gallery filled with just penis art then I guess it could close for a clean down, There are many very creative people here. I think it would be great to have a chance to see that creativity in game.

  • Penises is always used as an argument against freestyle player creation of content (whether building architecture or art work), but there has to be a way to allow players to create if you really want to call this a sandbox game. You can't have a sandbox game where there are no tools to allow players to create things.

Perhaps in the case of the artwork, it would be restricted to private homes and art galleries. I'm sure certain art galleries or certain people's homes will quickly develop a bad reputation if they have art that people consider offensive (swastikas for example) and you'll know after just one visit not to go there again. I actually think it would be cool to have some art galleries that take a risk and show art such as nude drawings and such, whereas others don't and people can visit the ones that suit their taste. Since the artwork would not be in public in the street, you can easily avoid it if you want to.

And perhaps certain pieces could get placed in public by devs if there's enough player support. For example, you could have regular art contests where players vote on a winner to place in some street or hand in beurocratic hall or some other public building.

  • Aww, what's wrong with penises?  I'm told that some of our finest testers possess such things.

But seriously, if this is going to be a game for adults, not children, we don't have to be quite so sensitive.  I agree that in-game player-generated artwork could be horribly problematic, but it could also be a lot of fun.  Also, people who truly abuse the system could simply lose the ability to use it.  (When I had a controversial conversation in the global channel for a few minutes, I lost the ability to speak there for an hour or so.  Similarly, it would be a simple matter for moderators to temporarily remove access to paint or photography tools, or to do so permanently if a player could not stop drawing cucumbers.)

  • people won't pay for graffiti penises, but they will certainly pay for erotic art depicting their glitch or some other having sexual relations with their glitch or some other.

    my 2 cents.

  • Yes!  A game that fosters creativity, this is the dream!  For instance, since day-one we've talked about wanting to be able to jam together in Glitch. One day :)

  • I would like to see a "Market/Main-Street", (almost) every town has one.
This street would have everything, such as an Official/Government Building, lots of shops (one of each kind of vendor),
    and there could be a market place, with stalls where players can rent a stall for the week, and sell their produce/meals/tools etc (there could be a sign to list prices,or have the price show when you hover over an item);
plus maybe some kind of church or mega shrine (with stained glass windows), where people can select which Giant to donate things to (or maybe even create a Super Giant, who resides above all?),
and, last but not least, access to a post office and the subway, for easy travel to and from 'Market Street'.

  • Yes on the market street! There was one a while back, even. Whatever happened to that?

  • Sure. Put all the fun things that people have been suggesting on one street. Get tons of players to then go to all these fun things. Then watch the frustration as A) players can't even see their own name above their avatar let alone which building they want, B) flash can't handle all the graphics of that many people and buildings and interactions and crashes. In theory it sounds fun, but I also envision this as a big headache. However, to be positive, if there were a street with everything on it, having some sort of carnival or street fair (whether game or player invented) sounds like tremendous fun!

  • IMHO if all aspects of the game are from the top down and nothing player driven, the game becomes very dull. There needs to be an outlet for creativity or players will leave. What direction is Glitch taking?

    What's wrong with penis pictures?

  • Love all these ideas for creative outlets!

Per Lord Bacon-O's comment...yes, someone will always find a way...BTW, have you seen the Rock Street Creator Trophy?

But have to agree that while I want people to be creative, I hope their individual creativity is limited to areas they own or very specific areas in game...I wouldn't want to have to avoid areas in game because I don't like a billboard of what someone else thinks is art.  An art gallery would be fine, a vendor stall where they are selling it would be fine, in their own homes is great and makes those areas unique. Also, what I consider art would likely be offensive to others...I don't want others to be uncomfortable, but at the same time, would love to have more flexibility in expressing who I am in game - especially in my own home.

And so due to the potential for overcrowding in a market street maybe it's a region that is called market area with many different streets?  Or how about a signpost that takes you into the bazaar off the 'market street', and you have a select number of stalls per street...sort of like our neighborhoods now...it seems quite do-able to me...

  • I think thats a good idea b3achy.

Also.. as far as public art exhibitions... museum curator anyone? Someone that chooses which art is for public consumption? Same with "billboards" or anything like that. Also, we could institute picture rating... in a similar fashion to other social media. There is an interesting site with games that have a purpose, that uses the "gamers" responses to sort out online photos. It takes many things into account. We could do it more simply here, with a simple way to rate the picture as G, PG, PG13, R, X, etc... and a person could have the option of not seeing anything above a particular rating.
