Cropping is prehistoric

I believe the design of cropping and vegetables was made in the very first days of Glitch as a project, before "glitchy" became an adjective with a real meaning.

If not, why do we have a Farmville-like matrix of plots to clear, water, seed, fertilize and crop (no nibbling, petting, squeezing, talking)?

Why do we get, from those plots, boring vegetables without special verbs? (Spinach and broccoli being exceptions to confirm the rule.) We could tickle a potato to make it jump, enlarge a cucumber to get a mood boost, whatever.

Look at herbs. They were designed way after crops. The plots of land remained, but herbs make funny things, even funnier when combined.

Mining is not a diversified activity, but at least rocks talk!

TeaL DeeR: Glitch carries what appear to be very early items and mechanics. Crops and vegetables are a big example. They would benefit a lot from "glitchy" updates.

  • They did "improve" it when they stopped you from being able to perform an action on more than one plot at a time

    Gardening used to be much less arduous/tedious

  • I don't know, gardening is laggy enough for me as it is, I'm pretty glad the plots don't talk.  Verbs for vegetables would be nice. <3

    :: giggles wildly :: @ "enlarging cucumbers" :: snort ::  X)

    I think the plots are fine the way they are, though I do wish watering and clearing would go faster.  Still, I really enjoy it.  It's almost meditative.  I love gardening irl but don't have a big space to do it in, so doing it on Glitch just makes me really happy.  You could say, the mood boost I get from gardening on Glitch somehow affects my rl-"avvie".  ^_~

  • I'm not saying that all plots should be tended in one sweep, or that the general activity of cropping should be changed. Those are different discussions, and we had them already in the forum.

    What I say is that the activities involved in cropping are too "normal", too real life, unglitchy. And that the vegetables are "just vegetables", without special, unique, glitchy properties. All this looks like it was designed before TS achieved real "glitchiness", and that's why I called it "prehistoric".

    Now you get carrots and just eat them or cook something with them. Pure glitchiness would be to be able to place a carrot in somebody's face to make it their nose for a minute or so. Does this change carrots fundamentally? No. Does this affect cropping, or cooking? No. It adds flavor and makes more interesting to grow carrots.

    [By the way, it would help if produce vendors disappeared, but this is kind of off-topic.]

  • What you are failing to appreciate is that each of the Giants have their own personalities, which manifest themselves in the nature of the realms that they control.  Sit in the middle of your garden and simply breathe, and you will be able to experience the inherent Mabinity that is Cropping.  Learn to see the face of Mab in each of the vegetables (I think the potatoe is the nose).  Perhaps someday in the future, if you are diligent in your tending and harvesting, this will enable you to become one with your hoe.

  • @Mereret: "to become one with your hoe". Pure genius. Maybe you are right. I promise to reach to my cabbages with a brotherly hand.

    P.S.: Do you think the zuchini, in an adequate horizontal position, represents Mab's smile?

  • It would be lovely if we had an additional item, "Googly eyes" that we could affix to vegetables to make them into toys and then they would have certain phrases or talents or at the very least "anthropomorphise" like the teddy bear.  ^_^
