Well that was.. weird.. ~O.o~ Is it just me or is this kind of a social faux pas?

Ok so.. this user was in Global asking for emblems, I told them I might have some.. I ran home and checked and sure enough I had 2.  So I stepped outside to do the trade with them and they asked for a lower price than what I had told them I was selling them for.  By 1,000c.  So I was like ok fine whatever, I like being nice and helping people.  <smiles>  So I sold them the emblems for 2k total less than I was going to and went to go back inside my house and they asked, Do you have anything more to sell?

So I was like ??? um... and looked in my bags really quick for anything I could sell them.  Found a music bloc that I was going to sell to the tool vendor.  So I was like "Uh I have a music block (??)" and they said "OK how much?" and I quoted them the price, it was how much I get for them at the tool vendor.  And they proceeded to tell me that's way too expensive and nobody will buy them for that much and they can get them on auction for way cheaper.  I was like dude I wasn't even going to sell it to you originally, I was just going to the vendor.  And I left and went into my house but then I felt bad, like should I not have even offered it to them since they could get it cheaper elsewhere?  And why are they buying up all this stuff for cheap anyways?

The whole thing just left a bad taste in my mouth and usually I love trading but I have to ask was I wrong?  Should I have just said "No I don't have anything else" and left it at that?  I thought I would be nice and offer at least.  :s

  • That person was being incredibly rude. If they didn't like the prices they should have said no thank you and gone elsewhere or made another offer to see if you would sell for lower. Making you feel bad for setting a price is just rude, especially if that is what you were going to get at the tool vendor. I think you handled it well, some people just like to take advantage of kind people.

Keep being your wonderful self, thankfully the weirdos are usually few and far between.

  • I agree!  You did nothing wrong and were certainly very generous with the emblems.  You have no obligation to sell anything.  When you sell to a vendor you are selling at a loss.  If they can find something on auction that is offered for less than a vendor offers why would they even ask you to sell it?  They were indeed rude and trying to to take advantage of your kindness.  It could be that they were confused about the price of the music block.  If they are fairly new to the game they may not realize that blocks have several different values and that no vendor pays the full value.  I have never been offered the full value for anything from a vendor that I can recall.  BTW, I also sell to vendors.  I rarely buy anything at Auction.

But you did remind me of something that happened to me.

A Glitch stopped me and asked about party packs - how you got one, how they worked and the like.  She then asked if I had one, and in fact, as I did, I said so.  Immediately she friended me and told me to have a party (not asked).  I said I was harvesting or on my way or something.  She said that as we were friends, I had to have a party for her.  I replied that she was not my friend and that I was not having a party.  I did not check if she unfriended me or not.  Some people are not very Glitchy.

Posted 11 months ago by Jewel Stoned Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I had the opposite happen (weeks ago)...someone advertised an item for X currants and when I met up with them, the price had magically gone up to X (+ 50% more) currants. I sighed and got them back down to a price closer to the agreed price (X plus about 10% more), but it was annoying. I agreed to pay X, you agreed that was fair, then you upped the price. Not cool.

In your case, you named a price, they agreed, that should have been the end of it. You were not wrong. You also had no obligation to sell them anything else at a deep discount.

Have also noticed an increase in the amount of straight-up begging going on. I don't get it. It is not difficult to earn money in this game. Laziness / begging does not inspire generosity from me. I give plenty of things away (mostly to newbies) or drop / hide them / stick them in the inventories of the AFKers I run across in Ur for fun, but nagging me, especially more than once, for stuff is just impolite. (Because I give lots of stuff away as it is, I may not even HAVE anything to give away left in my inventory if you bother me via IM or in-game for presents! That includes cash, though I am trying to do better about not spending every currant I have.)  There have been--in the past month or so--about a half dozen "I have never seen you before" begz0rz who spammed Global Chat asking repeatedly for stuff and who I eventually blocked.

Straight begging is not OK and should always be resisted.
Posted 11 months ago by Tiresias Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Bargaining once you have agreed to a price is not OK.  The seller may have turned down other offers knowing you were waiting.  She may have waited around for you, teleported to you or otherwise inconvenienced herself.  It is OK to bargain in advance ("I will be there in 2 minutes if you will sell them to me for X minus 10%" is OK).  Waiting until the deal is struck is not ("I know I said I would pay X but now that you teleported here and I am thinking about it, I only want to pay X minus 10%" is not OK).

  • I'm with *Lorelei* -- giving is fun. Being panhandled is not.

Also, there is no "should" in Glitch. The TOS, Guidelines and game client do not require folks to honor their verbal agreements. I see this is a good thing -- acting honorably requires folks to act that way intentionally of their own will, not because of some external force requiring them to.

FWIW, if someone tries to renegotiate, I generally just kill the deal. I might throw in a stack of meat or somesuch one way or the other. Of course, with AK7 a stack of meat costs me 30 energy max -- I find "greedy" players balk / say "meh", since they'd have to do real work to turn it into currants, whereas "desperate" players trying to accomplish things will value the raw goods.

Anyway, sorry you hard to run into a dishonorable (as I see it) player Miso.

  • Some people enjoy dickering and making deals more than acquiring the actual resource they are bargaining over.  It's just that simple.  Their way of playing is not inherently less 'good' than anybody else's way of playing.  When they let it roll over into bullying another player, that other player should just cut them off.  That's your right and responsibility to yourself;  don't let yourself be bullied.  There will always obviously be a class of wheeler-dealer types in any game.  Give them their space, which might even mean just blocking them sometimes.  In-game, you can only become a victim if you let yourself.

Lorelai.. maybe they forgot the price they quoted you?  >_>  *just trying to find people's inner kindness* Then again that wouldn't explain why they'd try hard to get you to pay the higher price.  Sometimes I've forgotten a price I've quoted or been told I owe but I always ask, before the trade, "It's x amount of currants right?"  And I check the forums and stuff too but I always double check with the person first and see.  I can't imagine quoting someone a price and then *purposely* raising the price.  ~O.o~  That seems unfathomable to me that someone would do something that seems so fundamentally unethical.  -_-

And of course jiva.  Thank you, too, it was nice trading with you. <3

In general, I love trading, not just because of the extras some people throw in (rare - jiva, again, thanks <3) but because I just like the form of interaction.. I enjoy providing goods for others that can be appreciated or at least used by others.  That's why I sell on auction a lot too, not to earn currants (when I want to earn currants I just go to the tool vendor - for now at least, God forbid the devs really eliminate the vendor -_- ) but because I just enjoy trading and crafting stuff for others.  I don't like haggling when it's done meanly but if someone asks nicely for a lower price or offers a trade of items instead of currants I will almost always accept.  Because I just like trading for the sake of trading.  Sometimes I auction items and then buy the same item back from others too because I'm weird like that.  So that's why I was willing to take a lower price on the emblems even though the person did it the way they did because I figure hey if I can help a person that's a good thing.  But then the rest of the interaction followed and yeah.. made me upset.  I'm glad (most) people here don't think I was in the wrong for not asking for a lower price from them or something.  I don't even know what the something would be.

OK gonna stop rambly now. <3

The social cue you missed was that this is not a being nice situation.  That doesn't mean be a jerk, it means decide what you want and stand up for yourself and be polite but businesslike. Hold them to the same standard, but don't trust them.   If it's clear you're not going to reach agreement, just end the conversation as politely as possible and walk away.
