Brain Capacity - Buy it in bulk everyone!

My last four cards...

3 capacity - 120,000 iMG  - passed on this one
5 capacity - 200,000 iMG - passed on these too
1 capacity - 40,000 iMG.  I bought this one becasue it was more affordable
3 capacity - 240,000 iMG ?!?  This was my next draw.

I looked at my logs and brain capacity cost seems to increase exponentially.  I apparently just lost 160,000 iMG by not knowing to buy the 5 capacity card.  *cry*  I only got 1M points so that's a loss of 16% of my iMG from a non-obvious mistake.

Looking at my logs I had one increase after 4 points, the next after 3.  Buy your brain capacity in bulk, folks!

  • I thought some of the prices were different for the same amount... And more expensive after I had bought some.

  • I don't think the cost trend has been completely figured out yet, but your costs don't always go up. Many people have actually gotten 16,000 iMG Brain Capacity +1 cards very often. Whether or not there is a finite number of cards will make a difference too because if there is a set quantity of each card price, then you will eventually cycle through all of them, and end up getting cheaper ones that haven't been dealt.

There are currently 15 known cards with variable prices. I've been scanning upgrade lists and here are all the data points found so far: http://glitchium.com/data/upgrades-cost/

  • Hmmm... So should I get the +5 and the +3 in my current "hand" for a total of 160,000 iMG?
Posted 7 months ago by Mal'akh Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Huh.  I had the distinct impression that the cost of the cards was influenced by either your level or the number of similar cards you've already purchased.  I suppose I could be wrong, but maybe we should test for either factor if we haven't?

Because, I've had reports from a much lower level character (level 6 now) that her brain increase cards only cost 500 iMG and 1000 iMG.

  • For the data collectors, my purchase logs show an exponential increase every few points.  I've bought 10 capacity so I must have started at 37 capacity.  I was lvl 42 in the old system, lvl 30 in the new.

    First 4 capacity - 10K/point, got one +1 at 10K, one +3 at 30K
Next 3 capacity - 20K/point, one +3 at 60K, wasn't paying close attention to other brain cards
    Next 3 capacity - 40K/point, all cards purchased were 40K, also drew 120K for +3, and 2x 200K for +5
I've now drawn one +3 card at 80K/point so the exponential increase is really clear in my case.

@ Mal'akh I'd purchase that hand and expect the new cards to be at least double if not 4x the ones you have. Depends on exactly where the breaks are.

  • After 50, it looks like the price goes down to 16000i for +1 Brain Capacity. I don't think it's level dependent, since the same pattern happens for players of different levels.  Most people are starting at 37 because they already had Better Learning, so it's hard to see what happens at lower amounts of brain capacity.

What I've got now is something like this:
    Brain Capacity +1:
    16000 - >50
    80000 - 46-49
    40000 - 43-45
    20000 - 40-42
    10000 - 37-39
    5000 - 34-36
    2500 - 28-33?
    1000 -
    500 -

  • Wow, I betcha that 16,000 cost is a bug.  The trend shows it should be 160,000!
Posted 7 months ago by Lucille Ball Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Good find, Yappari! The 16,000 does look out of place!

  • I'll get Cephalophoria to give you more detailed info when she's next logged in.

When I went from 41 to 42 skills, it appeared to cost me 10K.  Maybe I need to double check that, but I didn't see any other brain increase cards after that one.

Strike that.  I had a +3 increase after that.  I match the chart.

  • Wow, I just noticed that TomC has only purchased one upgrade! What fortitude! You're going to have a heck of a house. I've spent half my imagination already and I'm hoping I have enough left over to do what I want with my house.

  • Something similar happens for quoin multipliers after it goes past 19x. Increasing it by x1 stays at 40000, and by 0.5, it stays at 20000. Before, it went up every time it went up by 1.
Posted 7 months ago by Yappari Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think what might happen is the price per unit for brain capacity goes up each time you buy a card. Or maybe it's each time you pass a particular threshold of brain capacity?

Anyway I've observed that it is prudent to buy in the largest multiples. A bit late for me now, as for others... you win some, you lose some!
Posted 7 months ago by geekybird Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think the reason that the largest multiples are often cheaper (based on my own record) is that maybe when they bump you up into the next price bracket they still give you a bonus at the lower bracket's price.  If that makes sense.  But I'm not positive about that.
Posted 7 months ago by Carl Projectorinski Subscriber! | Permalink
  • From TomC's data  it looks like a simple tier system, aside from the 16,000 card.

It isn't about buying in bulk but getting the lowest tier available first. From other people it is obvious we have Tier I and Tier IV cards in the same deck.

It is probably that people have bought +1 Brain Tier VI and then had a +3 Tier II pop up making it seems as though bulk buying is better...though our decks probably have the +1 Brain Tier II in there as well.
Posted 7 months ago by M<3tra, obviously Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I bought a couple of them at first but am mostly skipping those upgrades because I already have all the skills and generally don't mind waiting a while for new ones.
Posted 7 months ago by BeatFreq Subscriber! | Permalink
  • there is a ton of luck involved here, whether you are granted the multiples early, whether you get the cheap +1 offered. over the course of spending 1 million iMG there is a very large swing in the amount of Brain Cap one player can get versus a different player spending the same 1 million iMG.

    basically, it is a crapshoot.

    or a cap-shoot.

  • I bug reported the 16K cards. Kevbob's looking into it.

@Metra If you find cards that break the doubling rule, please post here.  I'm super-curious now and my hypothesis is that the card cost is dynamically calculated when you draw based on your current capacity, not tiered within your deck.
Posted 7 months ago by Lucille Ball Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I have a brain that can hold 23 skills efficiently, and my last two brain cap cards cost me 500 iMG each, and I THINK my next ones do too.  I'm pretty sure that the 1000 iMG card I saw was a double boost.
Posted 7 months ago by Cephalophoria Subscriber! | Permalink
  • My data is TomC's

Tier X | Y Brain Card | Cost per Unit | Total Cost
    I | 1+ | 500 |   500
    I | 3+ | 500 | 1500

Using all three it looks like Tier IV is the 1st we have info on.

    IV|  1+ | 5,000 |  5,000
    IV | 3+ | 5,000 | 15,000
    IV | 5+ | 5,000 | 25,000

Though that assumes that +5 has a yet unseen 2,500, 5,000, and 12,500 card hiding. Or simply that 5+ cards start farther down the tier ladder.

If this trend follows then the +1 tier VII (excluding 16K) corresponds to the +3 120,000 and the +5 200,000 meaning that there is also likely *another* +5 card at 400,000 which would also follow your doubling by card type.

Either way my point is that it isn't about buying in "bulk" by only getting +5 or +3. It depends on the tier card that is showing.
Posted 7 months ago by M<3tra, obviously Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm not sure we're following each other  It seems to me that a player is only offered one tier at at time, at least that's what I'm getting from my admittedly limited sample.  Within a tier, all points cost a constant amount and you can get +1, +3 for 3x the cost, or +5 for 5x the cost. If your purchase would jump you a tier, the way my +1 at 40,000 did, you save iMG purchasing the +5.  If it doesn't jump you a tier it doesn't matter what you buy.

  • Now I feel guilty. I bought 19 of the +1 cards for 16k each. I feel bad for the Devs too. This really skews the stats.

Ah! I didn't understand! You are absolutely correct! it does seem to be 1 tier across all card types.

http://imgur.com/nzajJ and http://imgur.com/FzVov Show different +# at the same cost per unit.

I also dived into a  top player's upgrades to check out purchase order. I did Sumi b/c, well, at the top:

Aside from 17 cards of +1 @16,000, which were the last brain cards purchased.

The order of their brain card purchases did increase per unit cost, as soon as they went up a tier no lower tier cards were found.

And there does seem to be duplicate cards for the same tier, though this may be a bug. From conversations in world people were weary of the brain cards as the price appeared to be moving up and down. I checked the profiles of 2 ppl who had said this, however, their actual purchases were "in order".

Also, in peeking into Lx's upgrade page he bought a +3 @ 228,000. or 76K/unit which makes no sense. It also doesn't fit either pattern and is not a "tiered" 16k card. So perhaps bugged card.

  • The Quoin Multiplier card prices were relatively more straightforward than the brain ones; however still not 100% on all the data points, but here is the tentative table of prices: http://glitchium.com/data/upgrades-cost/

Currently working on the brain capacity ones.

  • Yeah, I made the mistake of buying some of the lesser brain cards myself. It is wiser to buy them in larger chunks like the +3 and +5 cards.
Posted 7 months ago by Melting Sky Subscriber! | Permalink
  • My only brain card was +5 @ 50,000 and now I have a +3 @ 57,000.

O.o so looks like they're changing things.

    *doesn't buy till I see the +1/+3 @10K/unit*
Posted 7 months ago by M<3tra, obviously Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Metra, nice spading!  I just got a +3 @ 228,000 so I can confirm that one is available at 47 brain capacity as well as the +3 @ 240,000.  Alas, it's more iMG than I care to spend until after we get the yards.

That's interesting if they're changing it.  They're probably chuckling over a beer saying "Now the players are good and confused!"
Posted 7 months ago by Lucille Ball Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Okay, this is what I've gotten so far:

    +3, +1 = 40,000 iMG (10,000/point); Brain capacity increased to 41
    +5, +3 = 160,000 iMG (20,000/point); Brain capacity  increased to  49

    Now I get this... +3 = 228,000 iMG (76,000/point)

  • Added table structure for Brain Capacity values, but by far this is the most confusing upgrade out of the three types:  http://glitchium.com/data/upgrades-cost/

Quite a few unknown values and will be a while before conclusive patterns can be drawn. Especially confusing now because some prices were changed.

  • Well, I've gotten to thinking and at first I didn't want to buy any Brain Capacity cards at all, then I realized that with Better Learning V our storage was 37 skills, which means any Brain Capacity cards are actually Better Learning V ++.

  • I was offered the 3 for 228K card, so if it's a bug it's not a unique instance.
Posted 7 months ago by oscarette Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Think hard before shuffling. (I'm looking at you, @dm!) If you're looking at, for example, 3 brain +1 cards for 80 K each and you buy one and don't shuffle then you will be able to get each of the two other brain +1 cards for 80 K. If you do shuffle after buying one, I think the iMG cost will be revised upwards on the other two cards when they come up again.
Posted 7 months ago by Aleph Zero Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Mal'akh The cumulative penalty is 5% now so 37 brain capacity is considerably worse than the old BLV.

  • @Lucille Ball
True. Just pointing out something I realized upon thinking things over as I've bought in bulk even before I saw this thread. The advice is sound and I actually felt like I should have waited to get 3 +5 cards all at 50,000 each. ^_^

  • So should I report the +1 I got for 160,000? I know everyone says that's the right price but now all the cards are much lower.
Posted 7 months ago by Bexatious Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @oscarette "I was offered the 3 for 228K card, so if it's a bug it's not a unique instance."

The +1 @ 16k was bought many times and was admitted typo...though I don't think anyone would have bought +1 @160K by the dozens. So perhaps the 76k/unit is intended.
Posted 7 months ago by M<3tra, obviously Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The +3 @ 228,000 card is a 5% discount from the "default" +3 @ 240,000 card.  The +3 @ 57,000 you were dealt is also a 5% discount from +3 @ 60,000.  Perhaps there are occasional 5% discounted cards offered to keep things interesting?
