Alpha subscription expires next week

Did anyone else get this email?

Hello Glitch Tester!

Your free Alpha subscription expires next week. No action is required
from you: if you don't do anything, your avatar customizations will
eventually revert to the free options* (but you'll get a grace period
after the subscription has expired before that happens).

To view your subscription details and account history, you can click
this:
beta.glitch.com/account/sub...

If you do want to take action, there are two options: (a) head over to
the Wardrobe & Vanity to set up your avatar the way you'd like it to
look after the subscription lapses.

See: beta.glitch.com/wardrobe/ & beta.glitch.com/vanity/

Or (b) choose from one of the three subscription options available now
for testers and take advantage of the special discounts we've created to
thank everyone (so much!) for all the feedback. Glitch would be pretty
cruddy without players, so we truly appreciate it.

See: beta.glitch.com/subscribe/

Thanks again,

- The Glitch Team

  • From the purchase credits page:

"Beta Special Beta testers get all credit purchasesdoubled! To thank you for making Glitch better, whatever you purchase during beta testing will be doubled when we launch. It's like a 2 for 1 sale: on launch day, we'll automatically deliver a matching number of credits into your account for every purchase you make now.June 1, 2011: The "free gifts for friends" offer (100-packs of credits and a month of subscription to give away) is no longer available."

  • Thanks for the clarification D~ and JW. So I can wait a bit.

  • i think (could be wrong, as this whole thing confuses me) that one of the benefits of subscribing early is that the subscription countdown (12 or 14 months) doesn't start until the game goes live but in the meantime, we still get our X number of credits/votes/tokens per month.  And I think those can accrue.

let me know if i'm wrong!

  • From bees! ^^^^ up there, posted 3 hours ago

: We're stopping the free gift packs offer today (but any credits purchased today, pacific time, will still get them)

You have 4 hours to get the free gift subscriptions and 100 tokens for every $10 spent deal.

  • @delicious that is correct - Your one year (12 month) subscription does not begin until go live. Do not be surprised if it ticks away on your account page as they state they are going to reset it at launch.

  • Travinara, re "My bigger concern is the extra 'alpha' perks going away when the alpha subscription does - aka the discount - which will totally impact my buying capabilities …"

Which perks and discount do you mean? All that happens when the alpha subscription lapses is that you can't select subscriber-only options in the Wardrobe and Vanity.

  • MaryLiLamb: that credit-doubling offer will be available until the end of beta. We'll give as much notice as we can, but we don't know the date yet. You have at least a month, anyway :)

  • delicious: you (and Divine) have it right — the year of subscription doesn't start getting "used up" until beta is over, but the benefits start immediately. And credits, tokens and votes all accrue — they don't expire.

  • Finally, back to your earlier point Travinara:
"See the dis-connect? How is it 20 days ago we're told 'don't worry' and then now we're told 'we've been counting since the beginning'... despite not having info or payment capabilities until recently? I get it, things change fast, timelines change fast, you're a business... but I don't feel like the changes, and the intent to commence billing, was communicated effectively."

I've read the thread you linked to many times and I just can't see any interpretation under which it'd be misleading. Maybe there is some implication I'm not getting?

    The player asked:
"Just checked my "Account" section, and noticed that my subscription ends sometime today! Is that the same for everyone? Does this mean we'll get the opportunity to purchase subs pretty soon?"

    To which I responded:
"It just says that! I won't run out for a while yet, so don't worry :)
Subscriptions will be available for purchase before we expire the current free subscriptions (and, of course, we'll have a snazzy deal for testers)."

The poster was worried that her subscription expired that day and I told her not to worry since they wouldn't expire for a while. And, even the very earliest subscriptions will not expire until about a month after I said that.

And then I said that subscriptions would be available for purchase before the free ones would expire. And, they were available for purchase three weeks before the very earliest subscriptions start expiring.

Is it that a month isn't long enough for me to have said "a while"? We tend to (i) work as hard/fast as we can and (ii) release things as soon as they are ready. But we can't know with a great deal of precision when future features will be ready: a month, for us, is a long time (even more than "a while").

  • Not trying to be argumentative stoot... but if someone says 'you have a free month - but it won't expire for a while' then 20 days later they say 'month is up in 7 days', it's confusing. 3 weeks doesn't equal a month (4 weeks does if you include the notice, but that means you started counting in the same days as 'a while')... the argument seems petty at this point - but you only just opened my method of billing a week ago so yes, I expected more warning. Somehow I missed the subtext 'we started paid subscriptions so you have one month to plan accordingly'. We're all getting notice of the subscriptions starting to expire at the same time, so some people have 7 days warning and others have 30. And yes, it feels like 20 days ago you said 'we're not counting' and now we're being told 'we've always been counting and we're back-dating you'.

As I've said, I'm still going to subscribe... because it's a planned gamble I feel comfortable taking. I can hope (financial) changes are more clearly communicated in the future, and with more than 7 days notice... but if 7 days notice is to be company policy, those are terms I must accept. Of course most of the world is paid around fortnightly, but life happens. Basically I was bound to activating a free month back when we first got it and there was no subscriptions in the near future, and terms that were unclear at the time. I'm also vaguely concerned about being bound to an as-yet non-existent TOS for better than a year, but again it's a gamble I'm willing to take. I can also hope you can try to see how I feel blind-sided by a 7 day notice appearing in my inbox.

(Edited: Glad we found the missing mail. I will love it and squeeze it and name it Piggy!)

  • Way, way back up there somewhere, stoot asked:

"Gizmospooky & Dopiaza: are you talking about purchasing from a saved card? Or the first time you bought something? "

Purchasing from a saved card. When I bought my subscription, it definitely felt like there was a confirmation step missing there.

  • Poor stoot, can't win for losing. I feel lucky to be beta testing. I feel lucky to be offered discounts on subscriptions. When I signed on (for free) I knew ahead of time to expect to lose all at a moments notice. It was given for free. I donated because I wanted some of the outfit pieces, I expected nothing in return. Honestly, I'm shocked at the people crying foul here. Everyone knew this was going to go live. In my opinion, the day we signed on was our 30 day notice, anything after 30 days has been a bonus. This is just my opinion, feel free to agree or disagree, the point is moot.

  • I honestly think stoot and the team are doing a fabulous job with Glitch...for those whining and moaning non-stop it does make me wonder why you are still here?.....oh you love it and just want more? well jolly good then, paste a smile on your face and just go with the flow, it's a beta - personally I'm chuffed to bits to be a part of it - enjoy the journey and try to loosen up a bit =) (yes I know I'll get insulting replies to that but..... *blows raspberry*.  ;-)

  • We're supposed to express our opinions here, positive or negative, in an effort to make the game better.  We're lucky to test, and TS is lucky to have thousands of people testing Glitch without pay.  The forums are overflowing with more than a year's worth of criticisms, praises, bug reports, and suggestions, all for the company's benefit.  If we express displeasure with some aspect of the experience, that does not mean that we're somehow lesser fans of the game as a whole, or that we're "whining."  Suppressing negative opinions of the credit/subscription process will not help it to improve: if you don't have anything nice to say, say it anyway, tactfully.  Otherwise, why bother testing?

  • +100000 glum.

As testers, our job is to "whine" about what we don't like, and praise what we do. Our job is not to endlessly compliment the devs, no matter what they do, good or bad, to make ourselves seem like a bigger fan of the game. Part of the reason we're here is to tell them what's not working. Now they'll know for the future to be more clear with what they're doing money-wise, since people are letting them know that this is a feature of the game that could be implemented in a better way.

  • I wholeheartedly agree with not holding back comments just because they aren't 100% positive, if you'd noticed what I wrote, it was regarding people who whine and moan *non-stop*. For a tester to have relevance and use to the developers, they need to be able to see things from different angles - and in different lights. Those that appear in the forums to complain and appear rather sanctimonious most, if not all of the time, only end up creating a negative atmosphere which lessens the value of their overall 'constructive' criticism.

I would like at this point to refer back to my aforementioned raspberry.

  • To quote Stoot: "All that happens when the alpha subscription lapses is that you can't select subscriber-only options in the Wardrobe and Vanity."

So, the only thing that will happen when my subscription expires is I won't have access to the special clothes? I can still play, per the above quote?

    1) I have faith in the potential of Glitch, but have yet to see a strong direction it's going.
    2) The support is spotty and sometimes not professional. I've got immediate responses sometimes and my wife still hasn't heard on items submitted over a month ago.
    3) My last $10 went to getting vegetable plants so we can save money in the food budget. Wishing we could feed a few items to the piggies to get more seeds!

So, if I can still play and send support questions to quasi-oblivion, I'd like to.  Only thing I have while I wait for the plants to grow and bear produce...

  • @Orefye, yes you can still play without a subscription. (:
Posted 19 months ago by Milx Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I absolutely agree with you, Morticia Addams.

Orefye--please be a bit patient: the Glitch team is very small right now, and they are overwhelmed with all the things they need to do. They are doing the best they can. They will hire more help in the future (certainly before the game goes live), and then everything will be handled on a faster time scale. In the mean time, being a beta tester means that you have to put up with the fact that the game (and all of the infrastructure surrounding it) isn't perfect yet. Pefection (or as close as they can get to it) will come later--you are here to help them get to that point.

  • I have a few questions which there may or may not be answers to yet ...

    1) How long will we have to bequeth the gift packs of 1 month subscriptions + 100 tokens.

    2) Will they have an option to give them anonymously.

    3) Will they be re-transferable, iow if someone gives me one can I give it to someone else.

    4) Is there any chance we can start giving these away before go live ?
Posted 19 months ago by Divine~ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • 1) I don't think there will be a limit, but maybe one year?
    2) No, probably not.
    3) No, probably not.
    4) Maybe!
