What's the Sweet Spot for Croppery Income?

What crops or rotations of crops yield the best income per time or energy spent? I've learned that cabbage sells for more, but takes long hours to grow, so now I'm growing it at night when I'm not playing. I've tried spinach in the daytime due to its fast growth and turnover, but buying seeds for several crops a day cuts deeply into the small profits.

I don't want to feed piggies for seeds. I don't need produce for Awesome Stews, because I make Fortifying Gruel with less inventory space requirements, freeing up my crops to be sold as income. I sell my crops to the Tool Vendor.

  • The sweet spot will depend on how long you play each RL day.

Look at the growing times for each kind of seed.  Choose the seed that matures in about the same amount of time that you play.

Plant your seed at the beginning of your session.  Harvest it at the end of your session.  Plant cabbages at the end of your session.  Harvest them at the beginning of your session.

  • I should mention that I play off and on throughout the day, so maybe instead of multiple daytime crops I should just plant cabbage, something, cabbage.

  • The real value-add is when you cook with them.   Awesome stew uses 3 potatoes, 2 onions, 2 parsnips and 2 cabbages.  consider your energy cost for growing that list.  Then throw in 2 meat (4e) and 20  beans (1/3e each), both if self-harvested.   In return you have an item you can sell for about 160c.     'nuff said.

  • I thought the profit was gone from Awesome Stew. I'll have to reconsider that. :)

  • On a pure % return basis, Cabbage seems to be the big winner.  Factoring in the cost of a seed, and the value of the resulting harvest, you get about 277% return on investment per seed.  However, it takes 9 hours for cabbage to grow.  If you use guano to speed up the process, it will reduce your returns.  On a per minute basis, Spinach is the big winner, netting about 0.53 currants of profit per minute.  That being said, there are probably better ways to make currants than gardening.

  • Awesome stew takes 18e to make.  There's much less profit if you have to buy ingredients - it takes 20 beans and those sell for quite a markup in the actions.    Consider that you can harvest 24 beans by spending max 8e.   each bean is 1/3e.   at auction they are 3c or more.
