  • That's a truly hideous font on that site. Just saying.

  • hi johnny.  which font?  Andada?
Posted 13 months ago by Lara Subscriber! | Permalink
  • If that's the default font, yes.

  • It's not clear which font you're talking about.  There's several fallbacks, Andada is one but there's others if for some reason Andada didn't load.  Are you talking about a gentle slab serif font?

A screenshot might help too :)

  • I suggest you don't use fonts that are not standard. After looking up what Andada looks like, that's the font I'm seeing on the site. It's barely legible.

  • By the way, what do you find 'truly hideous about it?  It would be helpful if you could give a more specific or objective evaluation - if we decide to change the font, a less subjective comment might help us not choose something else that you find equally 'hideous'!

(edit: posted before I saw your last post - cheers.  So there's a big problem with legibility.  Could you take a screenshot?  What browser are you using?  I am saying this as someone who has no access to the website myself - I am not the webmaster, I'm just trying to help out so your feedback can be more useful to them.)

  • The random bold throughout the text (due to the style of the characters) is extremely distracting. You can barely read the links. Some letters melt into each (especially with smaller fonts). The thick bottoms and thin tops of the characters makes the top half of the characters "disappear" (again, worse with smaller characters).

    Just to clarify!

  • Thank you for the screenshot - that really does look awful Johnny!  What browser and OS are you using?  Sounds like a rendering issue.  Here's what I see.

I think your feedback will be very useful as we are talking about design at the moment in the group :)  If we can test the design in browsers such as yours we can then make more robust design choices.

  • Oh my!!!  It doesn't look like that on my screen at all!!!  What browser are you using?  I'll look into changing the font... that won't do at all.

  • @ennuienta I agree that it's generally safer to have web-standard fonts but it's not so much an issue of "is it in the top 8 web safe fonts list" so much as "have we tested it in all browsers/OSes/with-and-without-js-or-images-or-css" etc.  This website, www.glitch.com uses a non-standard font everywhere (VAGRundschriftD-Lig) - but I assume it's been tested in a range of browsers and has been robust enough to continue using.... anyway I talk too much! :)

  • Definitely. You can use a non-standard font but test it in every browser. I'm using Opera on Windows 7. Most people visiting your site will likely not be using Opera but its one of the big four.Looking up the font in question on Google's font site, the same rendering issue occurred. Generally a sign that it's not a good web font.

  • Yep, Opera is definitely a big one!  I'd rather test in Opera than <ie7 any day, haha.  Thanks Johnny.
