Open Letter To All Beta Greeters

Seeing as how we find ourselves on the cusp of rebirth I have something that I'd like to share. It's been so long since my first day in Ur- my memory of that time is long since gone. Yeah, that rivers run dry. I wish I could though.

I think about it often. I don't believe that I was met by a greeter. If I was, I didn't recognize it for what it was. An opportunity to get to know someone who had been down the road and could steer me in the right direction. Someone who I could have became friends with- relied on when I had questions. I wonder if I blew it? Maybe someone did try to help me out and I told them to sod off thinking they were a bot. I hope that's not the case. If I did, I apologize. I'm not that same guy anymore. I grow a little more each day. I become a little more refined. I'm certainly not a finished product by any means.

I'd like to cling to the hope that if I did indeed blow you off and offend you, that you overlooked the incident and we became friends down the line in spite of our shaky start. I know what a tough gig it is, and you do it out of love.

Thank all of you Greeters, past and present, for all that you do.

  • Wow! How blessed I was on my first day in the Glitch world, LOL! it actually took me a couple of days to get out of a trench ha! ha!  After that I was greeted by so many people! I don't really know who the official greeter was. Rascalmom was among the many "greeters" that gave me milk, food, drinks, a bag, and a Lem Emblem! I thanked everyone at the time but after this last test/start over, I appreciate that Emblem which took time to get this round, bag? I could only afford a small one, drinks? wow cost me a lot until I got trained, food? raw meet is awful, and milk,  what milk?  LOL
Thank you again all you wonderful greeters!

On personal note: @ Malo, you are one of the most awesome people I have met in this game!

  • @malo
I used to be a greeter and your name is ringing big bells. I may be wrong but I possible was your greeter. One of the reasons I stepped down was, i'm afraid the frustrations of being repeatedly blown off. Kinda felt like head banging on a wall.
I think deep down you know you were greeted hence your post. If you were? and I was? then....  no worries or hard feelings :)

  • I only have the vaguest recollections of being greeted. I hadn't quite discovered the chat system yet so I had no idea how to reply to this other being bouncing around near me. Also, I was more than a little distracted by the pretty blue butterfly wandering lazily over my head.

I did appreciate their gift of spinach and beverages, though. Came in quite handy. All hail the greeters and their generosity!

  • I was not greeted when I started. In fact no one even talked to me the first 3 tests i played and i only joined about 4 or 5 tests ago. It wasn't until the end of the big test before the reset that any one talked to me and that was only when i stumbled upon a street project and started helping. I had until then been thinking most people were just moving through the world silently and not really mingling.

  • I haven't had a greeter or took the option last reset, as I knew the game allready. I do love the idea of it though, the warmth and positiviness from it.

A few things I noticed in this thread, mabe for further finetuning:

Offer the option of contacting a greeter again a tiny bit later in the game (or make the offer last for a while) - some people are overwhelmed or too enthusiastic at first. The real questions arise after playing a bit. Or, when someone declines a greeter, show a chatwindow that directs a player to the global chat if they have questions.

  • Awww.

Being a greeter has been fantastic.  @Kare Bear - I think I might have been your greeter.  I'm just happy you are enjoying Glitch, because that's why I wanted to be a greeter - to share something I enjoy so much.

Hugs to all, greet-ees, those who never got a greeter, and greeters.

  • ''The wonderful thing about greeters, is that greeters are wonderful things''
I didn't get one, but I think you all do an awesome job and admire you all.
That said, not knowing how you present yourselves I must confess that I would ignore someone who says 'hi' if I'd just started a new game... too deep in the 'understanding of the new' to be social.
However, a nice ''hi there, I'm a greeter and if you like I will stick around 5 min or so in case you have any questions'' kind of approach would have been awesome.

  • Erm, I feel the same as @malo, I don't think I had a greeter, but then that was 9 months ago and all I remember was it being a sensory overload, so if I did and blew you off, cheers... and sorry. :)

  • I also declined a greeter. I did however come across quite a few people who happily answered my questions...and gave me lots of gifts! I now know the value of the items I was given and appriciate it even more. What a great group of players we have!

  • Zira, at a certain point in the intro period, new players are asked if they want a greeter - they either respond yes or no.  Some respond yes just to see what happens, some respond yes thinking they're getting a bot, and some respond yes because they have questions (and there may be more reasons why they click yes as well... but those are the ones I know of for sure).

I think most of us enter on the scene not just saying, "Hi!" but saying, "Hi!  I hear you had some questions or wanted some help."  We definitely let them know we're there to assist, not simply to socialize (though that's part of the assistance too- to let them know that this is a social world).

  • I was wondering how you become a greeter. I would love to be one.

  • Wow what the hell did you do or say?  Well forget it, guilt is not a good thing no matter what the priests say.  Debilatating and has creates extremely bad effects of stress on the body.

Instead worry about that little boy scout helping the old lady crossing the street you ran over.  The traffic camera taped you driving over them.

    LOL only made that up.

  • Thanks jasbo for explaining that. I would have enjoyed and appreciated it... oh well, if you see me in game and say 'hi', I promise to say hello back :)

  • "Offer the option of contacting a greeter again a tiny bit later in the game (or make the offer last for a while) - some people are overwhelmed or too enthusiastic at first."

Miramele, there has been quite a bit of discussion about that!  No one knows if something to facilitate it will end up getting coded, but in the interim, if you were greeted by me, then I should be your first friend in the game for that very reason--so you can contact me with questions later as they come up.  About 98% of the time, that is what happens, so people with my name at the start of your Friends list, feel free to IM me with any questions!

  • I think my favorite part of the greeter program is that it highlights the social aspects of Glitch right away--at least for the players who choose to have a greeter and who realize their greeter is not a bot! It makes it obvious that there are other players around who want to help and interact with others. When I started playing I just did my own thing until I eventually ran into something that I couldn't figure out on my own and decided to ask about it in the help channel. I like to think that someone who has had a greeter will be quicker to socialize with other players, even outside of the help channel. Then again, maybe the people who accept the offer of a greeter are the more social players anyway!

  • One of my favorite pastimes in glitch is to run around finding level 10 & under glitches and giving them each ten milk, it's really fun.
