Yellow Crumb flower - Where's the sense?

Am I missing something here or can somebody explain to me the benefit of the Yellow crumb flower?

You "double" your learning speed for 1 minute. Which means, you get one minute for free.

One minute.

If I munch 10 Yellow flowers, I get 10 minutes free. They don't stack in larger groups than 9, and they are quite tedious to reproduce in quantities like, say 60. 60 Yellow crumb flowers would give you 1 hour free of learning. Provided that every minute of the game, 60 times, you remember to munch one (quite another tedious thing to do).

As far as I remember, the flower has a value of 60 currants. 60 flowers would be 3600 currants, let's round it: 400 favour points with a giant. Or, in other terms: Donating them to a shrine will roughly get you just the same amount of speed learning, than munching them. Plus some XP and the chance for a game show ticket, and so on.

Furthermore, by the time that you actually are at the stage of the game where you own your bog house, know herbalism and a few other skills that make planting herbs easier, you have probably reached the skills that say "2 days 23 hours" instead of "3 hours".

Honestly, with a skill that takes 1-4 days, I don't care if I learn one hour faster. Unless I am the type of player who tries to be super-super efficient. Which, frankly, does not seem the type of player for whom Glitch is programmed anyway.

So what's the deal?

Did I misunderstand something? Does anybody has any strategies to turn the Yellow Crumb flower to use?

  • I only grow them because they look pretty in my house.  Same for gandlevery--the energy buff is so terrible it's practically useless, but it looks really pretty.  The only herbs I grow for actual use are rubeweed and hairball. Strangely enough, they (imo) look the most homely.

  • Rookweed is pretty good.

  • I buy gandlevery to keep my glitch awake when I go AFK briefly.  It's nice for that.

  • Actually all herbs are pretty useless.
-1 minute lerning? Than most skills are 30+ hours? Thats rediculous.
    +24 energy? Thats 1 meditation.
Rubeweed? I've used a lot of it and gathered some statistics. It shows that rubeweed doesn't work.

And the worst thing is 5/9 flowers in stack =\

I grow herbs only for XP and than donate them to shrine.

  • Yeah, the low stack is very annoying.

It increased my inventory problem dramatically.

  • Well, I tend to use them when I'm finishing up a skill.  Just got a few minutes left?  Chomp a yellow crumb.  Then I can start a new skill that much sooner.

  • After much experimenting in beta, I've put aside any kind of skill that involves herbs; they just have no use to me. I'll do them when they're all I have left, and purely for the badges.

  • I wonder if there isn't some kind of hidden interaction that would extend the life of the Yellow Crumb. Otherwise it really makes NO sense.

Maybe if you eat it along with something else? Just speculating.

  • Silvertongue  might actually be worthwhile. I don't know about any of the others.

  • Just like pungent sunrises and time quoins, yellow crumb flowers can be used to speed up your skill further even after you have reached the limit of donations and entered maximum learning speed. This is where they come in handy. Otherwise, donating is better.

I agree, though--herbs aren't worth it for me. I'd rather have a real garden to grow vegetables to make awesome stews. Now THAT'S useful.

EDIT: I noticed today that when I drank a pungent sunrise after I had reached max learning speed, it had no effect on my total learning time for that skill. I filed a bug report and am waiting to hear back on whether this is a bug or they changed the policy.

  • I made a suggestion in 'ideas' that some new recipes be made which involve both herbs and 'regular' ingredients, with the resulting dishes carrying some of the herb buff along.   I would love to be able to bake purple brownies.  Yellow Crumb cake might be worth it.   You get the idea.

  • That sounds awesome, WalruZ! I agree that would be a wonderful addition to the game.

  • I only use Silvertongue and Rookswort regularly. Sometimes Hairball when running around through the Ancestral lands :)

But I do agree that the mechanics should be looked at a bit more...

  • I find that of all the herbs, hairball is definitely the most useful. 5 minutes of fast-walking is pretty dang nice, and the energy cost is very minimal.

  • I find the combination of Hairball and Rubeweed very handy when making a spice run with a high level in gardening.  I get a lot of extra drops that way.

  • So bottomline is, almost nobody uses Yellow Crumb Flower, and nobody really seems to know how to use it?

Same for a few other herbs?

That is disappointing, indeed. People who live in bog houses have to cope already with a few difficulties. They cannot plant crops, their choice in trees is limited, and they often live also far away from important other trees. I thought that the herbs would at least live up to cover a few of those problems.

  • Yellow is worth 66c in donation, or roughly 66 seconds of double learning from favor.  This is based on 1 favor point worth 10 seconds of faster learning with the primary giant.

OTOH, Munching Yellow is worth 60 seconds of double learning.

If yellow can be acquired for below 66c, its a "deal", barely, for donation.
If yellow can be acquired for below 60c, its also a "deal", for eating too (!?).

Recent auction prices for yellow have been below 60c each, making it reasonable for either intent... though there are much bigger ticket items if looking at donations.

As mentioned many times above, it is inconvenient in stack size and one-minute doses.  XP, time collecting items to donate, possibility of growing it yourself, etc -- all make this not worth it for many folks.

What I'd like to know is : Does Yellow (or Pungent Sunrises) stack correctly when learning is already sped up due to spent favor?

    1) If I currently have 1 hour of pending double learning from spent favor
    2) munch a Yellow for a one minute double learning buff.
3a) 1 hour and 1 minute of double learning remaining?  (Stacks well) (update: yep)
3b) 1 hour remaining, Yellow is wasted. (Does not stack) (update: nope)

    Anybody know?

    Update: Tested --

    * Yellow and sunrises and Favor-spending all stack well.
    * Both yellow and sunrises can be used after maxing the favor for the day.
    * The clock on the Skills page always runs at realtime, regardless of how "fast" you are learning.
    * When you munch a yellow or drink a sunrise, it deducts 1:00 or 1:30 immediately from the remaining time.  Same goes for when you spend favor.

I have yet to figure out if there is a way to tell how far "ahead" you are in a particular skill.  This is when the rock says " Whoa! You're learning super fast. Keep in mind, if you switch skills you'll lose your super speed. "  on the skills page.  If you get too far ahead (buff you way through more than half of the remaining time), I expect all of these 3 methods would stop working to speed things up.  This is explained elsewhere in the forums a few places.

Have fun munching flowers -- I will be :).

  • Rubeweed hasn't really done anything, I remember getting better drops off of it.

Silvertongue is pretty handy, since it gives a lil commision for your next achievement or quest.

Yellow Crumb isn't really uh, I"m not sure what to do with it, it could be useful, if you could raincheck the other crumbs after you ate one...

Hairball Flower: Makes you wake super fast, helpful for ancestral lands races, not sure if you can use it in Game of Crowns, etc.

Rookswurt: Doesn't make you loose mood for no god damn reason, except if you do something purposly like drinking lemonade etc. According to Lucille, I guess I would combine it with Grandlevery which is something an apple might overcome.

  • I love yellow crumb flowers, both for their appearance (they decorate my icons' altars at home!) and also for being able to speed up my learning.  Since I don't donate to speed up learning (I only donate for 1. to get favour points with Grendaline, as she's my matron Giant, 2. to get emblems and 3. to get the icons) it's a useful thing to have as an alternative.  ^_^

  • Rookswort is very useful if you want to keep your mood up to get max XP while you cook, but that just might be me and my XP OCD.

I also always have a Silvertongue going. 5% isn't much but it adds up...

  • Thanks guys for the tips, Silvertongue, I think of it as a competition to quickly refill it.

  • I updated my post above -- and just realized that I never considered shrine powder ;p.

So yellow is similar per minute to spending favor without shrine powder, but much worse using EHSP.  However, yellow can help if you are out of favor for the day... bit by bit :).

    MunchMunchmmnnchmmmmgh. ... . Urp.
