Just too many things.

This may have been discussed before, I don't know. My problem is, there isn't an aim here, it just feels like we're just wandering around doing nothing. I see the little trivial things but the overall picture fails to amuse me. I don't know, I really want to like this game, but it's just too boring. There isn't a path to sort of keep by, it's just all over the place with what you do. If others enjoy this sort of thing, then alright, but not for me. Just wanted to see if anyone else feels the same? I may be missing the picture but yeah...

  • It *has* been discussed before (not chastising you, but just acknowledging that this has warranted discussion before). From what I've seen, most users have decided to create their own objectives for this game and make it their own, instead of being guided down one path. That's why the only way to win the game lies within how you enjoy it. :)

  • I remember when I was a kid and had a doll. I played with it. Made up stories by myself.
It wasn't a doll that talked, walked, peed or pood, so I had to invent and imagine it all by myself. I like that.

This game is the same as the first doll: It has lots of possibilities, you just have to play with it. It's like Lego, you get bricks with endless possibilities. (A while ago an inspiring video was shown about play vs.. something.. and something...)

Many other games with a specific goal is more like the 2nd doll: Put it down, look at it and wait till it does something, then respond in the only possible right way and it responds again. How creative is that. We learn to push buttons. To do as the quest tells us. Not even reading questlogs, no just follow the arrow to the yellow dot. Those games control you, they tell you how you should play and usually there is only one "right" way to play it. It's more like the fisherprice/playmobil: It's allready constructed and there are less ways to play it.

As to goals: create your own. Or create none and just follow a path. Does there have to be a goal? What's the goal of a doll?
Try a little Roleplaying, just a tiny bit. Think of how YOU can make this world more interesting.
Take a look at the groups "Events and activity planning" or "La Resistance, definitely NOT an assassins guild".

  • One of the things I like about Glitch is that you can choose your own path.  There is no struggle to reach some difficult goal that everyone is fighting for.  You can choose one or more paths and you can follow them as you like.  You can divert from your path in numerous ways, it will wait for you.  This is hard for some people to get used to I think.  Many games have a structured progression from one thing to another and may have huge competition in doing that.  Here at Glitch you can play as you like and do the things that you most enjoy.  For the most part, you do not have to do anything you don't like.  I have fun creating my own Goals and following them no matter how simple or complicated they may be.  I hope you find your path but, if you do not, then I wish you luck.  There are many games out there.  I am sure that you can find one you enjoy.

  • This game is a true sandbox MMO, albeit a bit more on the casual side.

Set small goals (I want a house, a garden, a whatever) and go from there. By the time you reach it the game will have expanded for you in many other ways and eventually new goals will have been born.

Wander around, see the sights, do some gathering, interact with people, build stuff, learn new recipes, achieve things, do it all over again...

  • Sami,
Games come in all flavors. Some are more structured. Others allow for the gamers to immerse themselves in a world and create their own experiences within it.

Gamers come in all flavors. Some like puzzles, reasoning, solving problems. Some like action, explosions, high energy interactive engagement. Some exploring, imagining and creating.

I'm one of those people who prefers to reason, solve, explore, and create. I love the freedom of exploration in Glitch, making it what I want rather than some prescribed path of Do A to get B to C (wash, rinse, repeat). I find those types of games incredibly boring to me after a short time because there is nothing I can do to make the experience my own. I'm bound tightly to the game producer's vision of "success" or winning. Here, I choose my experience. I choose my goals. I choose my path. I can engage, interact, collaborate as I choose.

I challenge you to explore, to unbind yourself from your comfortable gamer space and let your mind run free for a bit. See what it really feels like after you have invested the time and energy into creating your experience. You may find that you feel the same way. That's okay. Glitch really isn't for everyone. No game or experience could be. But...you might be pleasantly surprised to find that you have a place in your gamer life here - just a very different place from the goal and task-oriented, winning = x+y+z games that you are used to playing.

  • Let's admit, this game is not for everyone. I find it boring too, I've gone back to playing World of Warcraft. But I'm giving Glitch a chance and I'll be back in game when it goes live to see if I can find a reason to play. What I was going to say though is that whenever someone expresses an opinion that this game is not the best game ever there is a bunch of Glitches trying to convert the poster, "just do X, Y and Z and you'll see how awesome it is". Perhaps instead try to remember that not everyone is the same.

  • I don't see a problem with encouraging people to explore - especially when the person asking is a relative newcomer to Glitch at the time of the post.
Posted 17 months ago by g33kgurrl Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I mostly meant all those posts from people who reached lvl 20 or higher and have done most if not all things in the game and are bored of it. There have been several threads like that already.

  • I never thought of it as being more like Second Life than a traditional game, but thinking of it like that makes more sense.  Maybe it's more like a cross between Second Life and a game.

While it's a strength that you can create your own path in the game, that can often be lonely, with only the Rock to keep you company (if pestering is a form of keeping you company!).

I think framework games like Lego work for a while by yourself, but only become fun in the long-term when they become part of social interaction with other people.

So I'd like to see ways to make it easier to connect with other people playing.  I know there are lotsa ways already (certain tasks, global chat), but in many ways it still mirrors real life - it's up to the individual to get over their inhibitions and make themselves walk through that (virtual) door to meet other people.

Personally, I've failed to do that.  I envy the level 20 plusers who are off solving challenges and having parties.  I know they're really nice people, but I'm too scared to bother them because of my inadequacies.

Maybe there could be more low-barrier things to encourage newbies to interact?  Like 'all invited open street parties', more instructions/options on what you could do if someone else gives you a hug, flags for who is open to interaction currently (ie. you won't be bothering them because they want you to bother them)...?

  • @MeetHead

Don't be shy! I believe all street parties are open to everyone. Just walk in, start up a conversation, have a drink. Just like in real life, there are no "directions" on what to do if someone hugs you. Just react normally. Hug them back or say thanks. No one has a "Do Not Disturb" sign hanging on their butt. Just go on and start a conversation! I'm sure nearly everyone is open to meeting new people or having a small chat.

  • MeetHead, make sure you are playing on the last day of the test, and ask about the End of Test party in Global Chat..there always is one, it's always a blast and it's a great way to see all da peoples together.  Or friend me and I will summon you there if you like...

  • I felt the same way at first because the concept is just so foreign to me. I've usually only played games that have a goal or a point to it.

But as I've played more and more I love that there is everything and nothing to do at all times. I never feel like I have to do anything, and the more I play the more I love that freedom

  • Meethead, go to some street Projects.  No invitations, just go to them and contribute.  In between phases talk to people, run a race, hang out.  It's like a party without invitations.  You can meet some good people there.

To find a project, ask in Global or a Group or local Chat.  You can also look at the Map.  Streets that are faded looking and that you cannot mark as a destination are the new streets under construction.  There will be a Project on an adjacent street.  These new streets are mostly on the far edges of the map.

  • I like it because I'm not the kind that wants a goal. In fact I procrastinate with ALL my goals. Then the thing pops up and I go, oh, there's a goal for that? There's also races and leaderboards for my competitive side.
Posted 17 months ago by KitkatCat Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @MeetHead you can also find project locations by joining the New Streets group and keeping that chat open.  You'll learn about the types of things needed, too, if you're in between quests.  It IS a good place to meet people, and level 20+ players are often really nice...

I mean really, we all had to do the Kiss-People-with-Garlic-Breath quest at some point or another, and we'll have to do it again after reset. :)

  • It's true different people have different tastes. If you don't like sand-box games (like "The Sims"), you probably won't like Glitch either. I've been disappointed in some recent "RPG's" that have come out that ended up just being action games where the player is forced to go down a specific linear path and has little to no choice in customization of the character. It wasn't what I expected in an RPG, so I didn't play past the first day--it was boring to me. Sure, alot of people thrive on structure and need the game to tell them exactly where to go next, and that's fine. If you're one of those people, Glitch will quickly irritate you, especially as you start to run out of quests at higher level.

Now to address a point I saw in the original post that no one else has touched on: yes, right now, Glitch is a relative mess of (at least somewhat) disconnected things that you can do. This is because Tiny Speck first put their attention on developing alot of things to keep new players busy and teach them the basics of how to play the game. They are only now starting to develop deeper content, which will develop an overall story and offer a larger purpose to the gamers. They will also be adding more stuff for higher level players to do. You can get a glimpse of the beginnings of this by completing the tower puzzle quest in Jethimadh. More quests will be added to this tower, and the devs have stated that more towers will be added in the future. There is likely alot of stuff in Glitch that is totally awesome that newer players who are questioning the point of the game haven't discovered yet--if you give it a chance and continue to explore, you may be pleasantly surprised.... and it's only going to get better!

EDIT: I just saw that the original poster is level 1... yeah, I think he (she?) should definitely try the game out a *wee* bit longer before dismissing it completely...

  • LMAO, reminds me of the Tumblr user that said that the game was too much like Farmville after having "tried it out for a few minutes" and, from what I read, didn't even make it past the initial tutorial.

  • hi. this is a response to the original topic. and is just my opinion.  :)

this glitchy awesomeness is so different that it isn't going to hit everyone over the head. it can be subtle, especially if fallout nv is a good example of whats on your hard drive. the longer i play glitch, the more i move away from my "gamer mentality" when i play glitch. it is so simple; play, be happy, have fun. the rules are no rules, do anything you want, here are some ways to play...and you get to play with other people too. cool.

the word game is misleading in some ways when applied to glitch because it is more of an environment that has games. there are racing games, quest style games, rook egg games, mini environmental and urban economics games (gardening, shrine donating, mining, rooks, etc.). the tower game is totally worth waiting for, i can tell.

add to all of this the ability for players to interact with other players in real time and experience this digital world as an addition to their real world (which makes glitch real, dare i say?) and i still think "game" is not good enough to describe glitch. we may need a new word.

  • Slightly off-track but on the lego front, I remember the days when lego bricks were just lego bricks... you bought a bag of bits & there were square ones in there, long ones, triangular ones, flat ones, bricks of different colours etc. But that was it... it was just a bag of bricks. And you made a 1000 different things from those bricks.

Nowadays it seems the trend is to buy the "Star Wars X-Wing Fighter Lego Kit" or the "Fire Engine Lego Kit" containing a mixture of generic bricks and specialist parts. They get assembled to match the model on the cover and then put on a shelf never to be touched again.
