Stupid Rocks

I got two small rocks for finish 7 quoins shy of being an apprentice hero.  Cracked them open and got 100 currents and 50 currents.  I'm feeling a little underwhelmed.  I will not be going out of my way to participate in the next feats.  Feel kind of dumb sacrificing sleep for 150 currants.  Should have kept the rocks.

Edit: OK, rocks are much better now.  Way more satisfying to crack one open and get some beads to trade instead of currents.  Thanks for the fix Tiny Speck

  • I can't even crack mine open.. just gives me the option to crack one of my tools!  No thanks to that so I have kept the rock lol

  • You just select what tool you want to use to crack it with.  I got to the tools after.

  • @Reni's Mum, You have to choose a tool with which to crack the rock open.

  • Why do you have to choose a tool?

I also don't really get the concept.

And recieving currants is indeed underwhelming. For some strange reason, recieving items is always more fun, even if the items are near worthless. Recieving money ist just... meh!

  • I had one rock and I got a piece of an artifact. It's all luck so don't give up.

  • The tool choosing might be relevant for new players for whom tool breakage is still a problem, perhaps? (If cracking the rock uses tool endurance, that is.)

  • I chose a hatchet to break my rocks and still had it afterwards, didn't notice much use or breakage.

And I got part of Grendaline's hairclip in one of the rocks, yay! Currants in the other. Overall, I loved the feat, got me to go out and explore more of Ur. :)

  • What are all the different types of rocks? I had a 'small petrified rock' it would be cool if we could get a list of all different possible rewards from all types of rocks.

  • I just don't think it's fair that I got over 420 quoins and only got 2 stinking small rocks, when I would have gotten 1 small rock regardless for only getting 1 quoin.  I actually lost sleep over that event, which I wouldn't have done had I known the so called rewards.

  • 2 small rocks= 3 hours of sleep(+4 more extra hours)= 50c each
    Why TS? Why?

  • 10 seconds of work for the rock and got me an artifact piece! :)

  • I got a manuscript fragment. Putting a currant price on feat participation is a bad idea, for sure.

  • I understand that people are disappointed with receiving tiny amounts of Currants as prizes, and agree that game currency as a prize for a Feat like this feels like a bad fit.

But that cliche about the journey being more important than the destination comes to mind. For me Feats are about working collectively to achieve a goal. I'm glad that the Feat gets completed, but the game-play that brings us all outside of our houses and makes the completion possible is worth more to me than the actual completion or the prizes.

TL:DR The actual game-play resulting from these feats was worth way more than any prizes.

  • @The Cat Feat: True, but I know I would also have preferred even a trinket over currants. That's the gist of what I'm getting from this post- that items are still better than currency no matter how little they may be worth.

Adds to the thrill of cracking the rock open. ;)

  • I'm with TCF(ace? eat? eet!). I like the collaborative doingness of the feats. I mean, sure, I grumbled when I cracked open my rock and got a whopping 30 currants. Um... yay? Reward so did not match the effort here. But,then, I had a load of fun doing the feat, so what was the effort really? And didn't I already kinda get the reward in the fun of it all? So I stopped grumbling and went back to dying a bunch. Which does not count for me towards the feat, but still... it counts for someone else and fun. Fun is good.

  • I also don't think TS wants you to be losing sleep - they've made it clear over and over that feats will sometimes take place over a longer period, or you just won't be able to participate as well from whatever time zone and work schedule you have. They've made sure rewards for participation are not exclusive to any given feat. In other words, you are not expected to be in every feat, on the leaderboard every time or any other such thing. If that's what you want to do, you can't blame TS for your loss of sleep (any more than I can decry the lack of a no-death achievement because I choose to personally challenge myself to never die even though the mechanics of the game make it quite clear that death is expected and not really bad at all).

Now, if you want to argue that the number of rocks you get should scale better according to how much you participated, I think that's a fine argument! The rocks pretty obviously have random contents, which I think is fair enough in that regard (after all, if I do participate, I should also get a chance at "cool" stuff), but people who contribute more (in a direct sense) should have a better chance.

  • I think it would be fun if all of the rocks gave you something towards an artifacty item, but the most common reward would be 1 or 2 beads that you need like 100 of to make a necklace (as opposed to the "cooler" artifacts that have 4 or so pieces but are rarer).

That way, artifacts are still something to work towards that will take time to achieve, but no one would have the disappointment of getting currants from their rocks.

  • I got 75 currants.  I may have got some cards but I am not sure where they came from.  The prize gave me a laugh anyway.

The dying one was worse, I died lots but only managed to mourn three, for some reason two of them didn't count.  The chances of me getting out of the low achievement zone are so slim I have given up.  So may get even less currants this time, ha ha!

  • Um yeah, I got two rocks and a whopping 200 ¢ as a prize.  That was rather anti-climatic.   I don't think I'll be bothering much with future feats.

  • These posts are discouraging me from opening my one lonely rock, because when I do I'll likely have nothing left as a souvenir. Please consider an otherwise-useless non-transferable trophy/trinket which can be displayed with I-was-there pride instead of those disappointing few currants.
Love this game, love the feats, love souvenir shiny thingies. Thanks for the fun!

  • I think Caiyot's idea of beads is genius. Something very small and common that would still be an artifact and add up over time!

  • I spent about 20 minutes on the feat, got one rock, and cracked it open to find a piece of an artefact, so don't give up hope! I like that it's luck of the draw, personally.

  • Pickle Juice (and others, saying similar things): "I just don't think it's fair that I got over 420 quoins and only got 2 stinking small rocks, when I would have gotten 1 small rock regardless for only getting 1 quoin."

Well, you also got 840 favor with Lem, 2100 currants and a bunch of mood/energy, on top of 420x whatever iMG you get an your level for each QQ collected. But, I understand what you're saying and would suggest that perhaps for subsequent feats you just do enough to get that one rock — if the individual rewards are the most important thing, contributing to feats will probably never be the right choice for most players.
Posted 60 days ago by stoot barfield Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Perhaps it would be better in the future to have clear goals.

Like for every X quoins, you get a rock.  Or a rock for your first quoin/quoins, then have deminishing returns.  Or just to know before hand the reward for the super mega challenge is something like double grow speed for all garden plots for a week.  I'd just like a better idea of what I'm getting into before I decide how much time to invest.

  • We should start a data-gathering thread; I'm curious too!
Posted 60 days ago by Pii Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I really like Caiyot's idea, too.  I'll be pretty sad to get a few pfennigs for a feat that I actually had time to play, even though a fair amount - not all - of the dying/mourning was superfun.  (And I don't need favor emblems, and if the mood/energy hit on login like before, I don't need them either, so I know about those rewards but I'm not looking forward to that part.)

I was superlucky and got a piece of an artifact on the first part of this feat - and I'm over the moon about it.   I know it was a stroke of good fortune that may not be repeated, and the mere chance of it being repeated is a good incentive to play in more feats.  (Though not the current one.)  But individual rewards do mean a lot to me, and to a lot of other players.  I'd be really psyched about a few useless blue pebbles that just showed I was in the feat - even if they never strung into anything else, just lay there being un-shiny objects of no apparent value, and ten thousand other players got them too.  Getting some token of participation would feel a lot more like an achievement - and shouldn't a Feat bring us some sense of that?

  • I think the thing is, people need to realize that nothing is making you participate throughout the entire feat and lose sleep and grind and drive yourself bonkers.

Some people will grind because they want to make it to the leaderboards, and that is a reward for them. Some people will grind for a while and participating is reward enough for them. I played for the last three hours of the sparkly feat last night and got three small rocks, all of which contained currants - of which I have plenty.

Am I upset? No. I mined rocks while chatting on Glitch and watching tv last night, and it was fun to participate. It would have been neat to get an artifact piece, but I didn't.

Just because something's there doesn't mean you have to throw your all at it, and the be sad that the "reward" wasn't worth what you got. We're not intended to spend the entire 24 hours of a feat playing non-stop. Those who choose to do so get their own personal intrinsic reward for doing it, but Glitch is not going to give us tangible rewards for it because that's not what they're intending to encourage us to do.

  • I got 60 currants for the quoin feat.  Got two small rocks, 30 in each.

Meh.  I did however finish two more completionist zone badges and went up a level during the feat, so it wasn't horrible.  Just wish I had more luck with random type things in "crack this open!"

  • I got several rocks from several feats!

I've only used one so far and I didn't crack it open myself - I dropped it on a ledge and did some "acting" with others, pretending we couldn't figure out how to open it. We hopped up and down, ran back and forth and eventually, someone else cracked it open and got 250 currants, which they offered to me but I let them keep em for having fun with me.

You can't win glitch :D. Try less, levitate Moehr!

  • I got small rocks for the first two feats, and debated whether to keep them as souvenirs or give in to curiosity. I gave in to curiosity because there was no way to tell which rock came from which feat, and was lucky enough to get an artifact plus some currents for the QQ feat. I got only currents for the Mourn/Celebrate feat, and found that a bit of a let-down. While the feats have been great fun and rewarding and I don't at all regret the time I spent on them (had a LOT of fun, in fact!) I do wish I had some tangible souvenir to commemorate my participation. Folks who were around that one Christmas have their special Yeti. First Betas have their Special Item. Surely the Second Beta masses demonstrating what will and won't happen during Ur-wide Feats deserve at least a badge of participation?
