What's with the vegan propaganda spam everywhere?

Don't get me wrong, if you are a vegan in real life, well, good for you. However, in Glitch, chickens don't get eaten and pigs offer their meat without any injury or distress. Eggs come from trees. What's with all the humorless and obnoxious stuff everywhere? Oddly enough, it isn't even consistent, as no one seems to care about the poor milk-producing butterflies.

Perhaps Glitch is NOT the right place to spread your views, as there is no "cruelty" to speak of and you certainly can choose to play as a vegan or vegetarian in the game without too much of a penalty if you really have a hard time wrapping your head around the idea that these are pixel animals and therefore you are dealing only with pixel meat, grain and milk.

I don't know, it just seems to be out of place. I certainly don't go around naming all the animals to reflect my religious, political and personal views.

Is it me?

  • Meh, I respect the choice of vegans to eat only vegetable, but plants, insect, animals are all alive. Life kills to eat. Who's to say that a rabbit is more worthy than a cucumber? Not me. I'm not God, or Gaia, or whomever. Humans are biologically born omnivores, and regardless of whether we personally partake in the consumption of meat or not, the truth is, we will ALL end our lives as omnivores too. Biology isn't choice.

BTW, for anyone who doesn't know the term omnivore, it means we were built to eat both animal and vegetable

  • I too have heard a few 'E-Vegans' in Glitch express their views regarding eating meat and "harassing" chickens for their straw. I'd go as far as to say they were pontificating on how THEY play the game, and thus how YOU should now play the game. I was rather embarassed for them that they would bring their real-world standards into the electronic world of Ur.

I have yet to see a Buddhist Glitchen preach to a Christian Glitchen on the benefits of Meditation. I have also yet to see a Pagan Glitchen chastise those Miners for robbing 'Mother-Ur' of her prescious mineral resources. Perhaps there is hope.

tl;dr: bringing personal real-world views and standards into an imaginary, electronic, pixelated world and then advertising them is superfluous at best and disrespectful/insulting at worst.

  •  Just rename animals if you don't like them and if you find notes that you don't like, dump them in a shrine :)
Personally I find it funny when someone protests about nibbling piggies and squeezing chickens :D

  • The pigges here are like that animal at Milliways, The Resturant At The End Of The Universe.  The animal that comes to your table and urges you to eat it.  Except that animal then goes off and kills itself, whereas our piggies just drop off a slice or two of meat.

The ecology of Ur is meant to be absurd, and fun.  Simply that.

  • Balgra Fonzarelli: I didn't see any actual notes, but every single chicken and pig was named something that only the most militant PETA members would approve of. We're talking at least six or seven dozen animals all over the place.

Warrender: They were all over Ix and the Groddles, but apparently other Glitchen got annoyed and changed them all to pork and chicken dishes or words and phrases like "tasty" or "humorless vegans kill fun".

Also, my new favorite chicken name is "Eggsbockibockibockistanstan." *roffle*

  • First time I entered a real street in the game world I found a note advocating the vegtablists' point of view. I tossed it in a shrine. I've since made a point of getting as much meat in as possible. I have 600 steaks on the floor at home- I like to sell in batches of 480+ if I'm not going on a mining trip as that amount of meat earns a fair few currants.

Plus, I know it's digital, but it looks *really* tasty...

  • When the game first went live I saw on the Glitch FB page a huge post by a vegan who was super upset that he had to nibble piggies in the beginning of the game. Of course I gave my 2 currants.

Well you know what? I get real upset that those currants aren't real money. Damn pixels. I go around spreading the news that money is evil. Money is the root of all problems, but gosh I sure love to spend it. Those pixel currants get me so mad! If only I could spread the word. Perhaps I should leave some notes explaining to Gltiches the evilness of the currants. I should say how in the real world money kills so it MUST be this way in the pixel world too! Don't save your currants, they're evil!*

Learn the skills to rename them, ignore them, or call your friends to rename them for you.  Everyone has their own axe to grind and I see way more "People Eating Tasty Animals" shirts in the real world than I do those promoting vegan viewpoints.  But I don't complain to those folks either.

I am sure that the Marvelites are upset when I rename a piggy Peter Porker, or the Green Gobbling.  But that isn't going to stop me mWahahahahaaaa...

  • I had a petting zoo come to my house a couple of weeks ago for my sons' birthday party.  The zoo people wouldn't let me try nibbling the pig.  Not even after I pet him :(  Though I did get a chance to squeeze the chickens... the result was unhappy chickens, but no grain.  Although I did inadvertently find out that chickens LOVE pepperoni pizza!  Point is, the pigs and chickens in Glitch are not real world animals, they are not alive. You can be vegan without complaining about pig nibbling in Glitch.

  • "Well meaning but biology trumps philosophy every time."

And the biological truth is that we don't actually need meat to survive, thrive, or keep healthy.

What's wrong with this thread? Way too many people in here seem to think that it's okay to bash vegans and vegetarians. Well, it's not, regardless of what was written in those notes. Making fun of people for their dietary choices and ethical viewpoints is rude.

  • "Making fun of people for their dietary choices and ethical viewpoints is rude."

Leaving notes in a virtual online world proselytizing your dietary choices is rude.
Posted 13 months ago by Fatty McFatcheeks Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think the point Cefeida is that nobody really wants to bash vegans or vegetarians. What... I think... some are saying is that we are not the ones pushing it around. The ones that are pushing it around are the vegans themselves! I have seen notes on the ground with propaganda stating how cruel we are to nibble piggies and squeeze chickens and how it is wrong to eat meat. I have also been approached in game when I have nibbled a piggie or squeezed a chicken that I was in the wrong and I should not torture the poor animals! Then the person admonishing me may as well pull out a podium, stand on it, and start to lecture me! So the issue goes both sides here!
Posted 13 months ago by Casombra Amberrose Subscriber! | Permalink
  • "Leaving notes in a virtual online world proselytizing your dietary choices is rude."

Yes, but if one or a few vegans are rude, it does not mean you can make fun of all vegans for being vegans. Which is what is happening here. It has nothing to do with the notes anymore, it's just 'lol if you don't eat meat you're daft'.

    And that's my point.

  • Cefeia, of course, you can live a vegan life. I don't argue that you can't, nor do I think it's a *wrong method of life, it simply isn't mine. I'm glad for you that you have chosen a path you enjoy. Family members are vegetarians, as are friends. I would prefer to live without anyone preaching to me about how wrong my choices are. But then, those choices don't include me brow-beating vegetarians into eating meat. XD
Posted 13 months ago by Woochi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Please note that I did not bash anyone's dietary choice. I merely wondered why someone felt it necessary to name about seven dozen animals with guilt-inducing vegan screeds when, in the game, meat and dairy are cruelty-free products and chickens aren't eaten at all.

I wanted to know if it was some game or quest, a lone humorless vegan wandering the Groddles with a cruelty-free burr up their heinie about pixel meat (which is the funniest interpretation, to me: MUST PROTECT THE PIXELS FROM EXPLOITATION!), someone trolling for the lulz, or something else...and if it was a "thing" that people thought it okay or acceptable to name about seven dozen animals in high traffic areas to reflect their personal real world political / dietary / social / religious / etc. POVs.

I mean, it gets old when every single animal in a twenty block radius is named "Kevin Bacon" or "Konrad500" or "d" or whatever. It likewise gets old when every single animal admonishes me that meat is murder and not to kill them, when, frankly, the game mechanics do not even ALLOW Glitchen to actually "hurt" the animals. It's free guilt being piled on your head for something you can't even do in-game!

It isn't rude, it just makes them look uptight and clueless, as their POV is moot in a world where animals are neither exploited nor harmed for their food products. Indeed, the piggies smile and sigh with bliss and hand over (some suspiciously bovine-looking) raw steaks gladly. If anything, it does not win anyone over to their POV (because there is no "cruelty" or "murder" in the game), and I don't think anyone is astonished to hear that vegans actually exist at this point.

I think it is the difference between knowing that Jehovah's Witnesses exist and being cool with that, and being highly annoyed the twentieth or thirtieth time they wake you up early on a Saturday to tell you that your choice of religion is their business and also unacceptable to them and "would you please accept this tract?" You make yourself a pain in the behind and people are not going to slap their foreheads and say, "OMG, I have had it wrong all these years, I am going to adopt your world view right NOW!" Instead, people are going to find your attempts to interject real world issues into a play universe where such issues have no relevance as something either weird, obnoxious, clueless, humorless, or inappropriate...NOT awesome, cool, or appropriate.

I'm just sayin'. I don't feel a need to bash vegans. I've been one myself (had to cut it out when a doctor told me I was doing myself more harm than good with my diet), but, oddly enough, I did not feel the need to announce my strict dietary choices to everyone at all times, tell other people they were wrong / unhealthy / murderers / cruel, or bring my POV into arenas where it was not even applicable at all. Perhaps it would be nice if vegans did not feel the need to bash non-vegans by bringing their "meat is murder" notes on animals (as names) into a large portion of Ur.

In the end though, they can play however they like. I am not disputing that. I just found it bizarre and off-putting and was wondering if this was a regular "thing" that happened. Are there roving bands of vegans stalking the highlands and lowlands madly renaming pigs and chickens (while ignoring all those exploited butterflies, FOR SHAME!) willy-nilly and on a regular basis? Am I supposed to use my animal renaming skills to annoy other players with spammed screeds reflecting my POVs, too?

What next, Scientology advertisements? (LOL, pigs with "FREE STRESS TEST" as names.)

Ten points to the first Glitch who lines up rows of pigs or chickens and turns them into a multi-part olde skoole Burma Shave advertisement.

Do I like someone's lifestyle or view pushed on me? No. However making demeaning comments like "vegans aren't on the food chain because they aren't eaten.Ship one to a village of starving pygmies. Gasoline and tender meat for everyone!" Is rather rude and I think is overstepping a line here. I think you should be ashamed.

people DO get eaten by critters. vegans less often, i suppose due to there being fewer of them to start with, but people are still all made of tasty meat.

  • Then again, if they don't like being in a game where you got to eat mostly to survive, they can stay in Hell all their playing life, or leave.

No one is forcing them to be here, and by signing up, they bringing it on themselves.

It's like going to Costa Rica, and bitching about the heat. No one forced them to go there, and should have known what they're signing up for.

TS never said Glitch was going to be a vegan friendly game, and they shouldn't have to be.

And my little quip about shipping a vegan to pygmy village was a joke. I wasn't targeting any specific person. But if you take that out of context, you yourself should be ashamed.

tl:dr if they don't like it, they can leave. In the mean time, stop leaving notes about your beliefs.

So I have nothing to be ashamed of, I took nothing out of context.
