OK help me out {Herb math - question}

Purple flowers grow in 3, stack in 5, and are used for Essence in batches of 23.

How many *plots* do I need to plant so I can make the minimum amount of Essence(s) in order to have 0 leftover Purple flowers~??

  • 23 plots, if I did the math right.

  • 23 patches gives you enoguh fore exactly 3 ess.
Posted 11 months ago by wuilyl Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Are you also shucking what you harvest to plant the next round? That adds an element of unpredictability, making the question impossible to answer.

If not, the answer is 23. The stacks of 5 are irrelevant.

  • Well no, if I shuck enough each round of planting so I have enough to plant again?  I use the 9 plots in my friend's garden. *Assuming I start with 1 Purple Flower shucked into 2 seeds and I get the max number of seeds from every shucking..*
Posted 11 months ago by ♪♥~ Auren ~♥♪ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • But shucking doesn't always give the same amount of seeds each time, so the amount of shucking you need to do will vary.

Sorry, but your question is luck dependent.

  • Julie I have all the garden crop and herb skills, over 90% of the time I get the max number so just humour me and assume the shucking will yield the max every time.  :>
Posted 11 months ago by ♪♥~ Auren ~♥♪ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I have all those skills and don't average two seeds over time, a little less.  On the other hand I do get quite a lot of superharvests, which will totally throw off your numbers.

  • I'm working on the math as we speak. but it's a much more complicated problem this way.
Posted 11 months ago by Julie Lynn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • That's 2 per shuck, right?
Posted 11 months ago by Julie Lynn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Okay, I don't think this is what you wanted, but I've expended exactly as much brainpower as I've got. (and someone will have to check my musician math)

    Plant 9, shuck 5 (22 Purple)
    Plant 9, shuck 4 (45 Purple)
    Plant 9, shuck 5 (67 Purple)
    Plant 9, shuck 2 (92 Purple)

That's enough to make 4 essences. Take your leftover 5 seeds and plant them for your friend or in the community gardens.

Of course, given shucking averages and super harvests, this is entirely hypothetical.
Posted 11 months ago by Julie Lynn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yes Julie - effectively, you plant two plots, harvest six seeds, and shuck one of them for two more seeds.  Net yield on two plots, 5 seeds.  But as you say toward the end of this theoretical cycle perhaps Miso wants to stop shucking away herbs, and have neither seeds nor flowers left???
Posted 11 months ago by oscarette Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Shuck once, have two seeds. Plant them.
    Get 6 flowers
    Shuck 4, plant 7, have 2 flowers + 1 seed
Get 21 flowers (23 total). 1 seed leftover to start again.

    Planted 1 plot & then 7 plots.

If you also want to have no seeds left, you'll have to go to 3 essences, since 3 and 23 are relatively prime.

  • I also decided to work under the assumption that not planting all 9 plots is kind of a waste, but I suppose you could be growing other things while doing this. I like SchWM's answer.

  • you know, if you have seeds or herbs left over you can sell them.  It's not like they're gonna stink up the place or anything.

  • Furthermore, sometimes you'll get a bonus harvest... so, there's no way to make an exact science of it.

  • Woah.
    Math in Glitch.

Let's just say, one shuck = 2 seeds. no super harvests.
Posted 11 months ago by Palindrome Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The problem is super harvests are going to mess up any math you do for this.

But 23 plots I think is the answer assuming no super harvests and you already have the seeds.

That will leave you with 3 essences and zero left over flowers.
Posted 11 months ago by Melting Sky Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Wouldn't it be easier to just plant 8 plots, get 24 purple flowers, make 1 essence, and then sell/give away/save the one flower left over? Or is this math for the sake of math? Just wonderin' :P

ETA: I say this with next to no knowledge of super harvests and average yields. TL;DR: why can't you have any left over flowers?

  • Wheee!  Thanks everyone!
Nyx I was just curious.  *^_^*  So I guess you could say math for the sake of math.  It was making me kind of dizzy trying to figure it out myself earlier when I was planting, harvesting and then making Essences as soon as I had enough of whatever.

Edit - oh Gods I just remembered, I left a TON of herbs on my friend's floor.  Oops.  I hope she doesn't mind.  '>_>

  • Assuming you have an unlimited supply of raw material (seed) and no super harvests, 1 plot, 23 times. If you're lucky, your super-harvests will reduce the number of plantings required.

Presuming that you're a relatively high level grower (I think I'd be right on that assumption for you), you're likely to get three or four super-harvests over the course of that time, so maybe 19 or 20 plantings.

(you didn't say it had to be one planting)

    otherwise, what's already been said.
Posted 11 months ago by Woochi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • lol Josiah XD

Woochi you're right not necessarily 1 planting, but rather how many plantings to make the minimum number of essences with no leftovers assuming I plant and then shuck enough to plant again as needed.  :>
Thanks for the input everyone!!!  This is good to know and somewhat useful although I like having leftovers, to decorate with ... as I sometimes ... frequently actually... accidentally use ALL my flowers for essences and forget to shuck.  So it's good to know how many to plant and then shuck and how many essences I will aim on making.  *always keep at least 1 on hand to shuck for seeds*

  • Aaah!  Run away run away!  XD
Posted 11 months ago by ♪♥~ Auren ~♥♪ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • psibertus no but I do think the number of superharvests you get decreases with each one.. like the chance of getting one drops, like when you're mining gems and you come across a gem, then the chance of getting another gem is reduced.. and then you get another one and it's reduced more.. etc. That's why if you mine for a few hours straight you notice you won't end up getting a lot at the end but when you start you get a lot.  Or at least a few.  :>
