Newbie Help

Hey all.  I'm Level 7, just getting started and I'm kind of lost.  I've been doing some mining and alchemy.  Started making compounds.  I think it's all very cool and I love the game.  BUT... what do I do with these compounds?  Is there a particular goal or thing I'm trying to do???

Also, could anyone point me to a good intermediate level tutorial for things?  I've looked around and there just doesn't seem to be anything out there.  Is it all that new?

Thanks in advance. I'll take anything I can get!!

  • The compounds are used to make other things.  They can also be donated to the Shrines.  Continue on in the Skill tree.  Some Skills are required to create things that are used when you get higher Skills.  I am embarrassed to say that I often use the compounds but at the moment I can't recall what I make with them.  I have been doing a good bit of cooking drink mixing and gassifying all day and cannot now recall where the compounds fit in.  I am still learning Alchemy II.  Most things that you make can either be used to make other things or can be sold or donated.  Everything has some purpose so if you have not discovered a purpose then you probably need more skills.

ETA:  Yes, the powders are useful and valuable too.  You may need some of them but they can bring goof favor at the shrines and you can sell them at Auction or to the vendors.  Check out the Encyclopedia and the Wiki for more information.

  • They can be used to make some very useful powders like Extremely Hallowed Shrine Powder:

  • Ahhhh, excellent.  This does help.  I see I need to move on to beakers and such.  Cool.  Thanks!

Are there any pages that show groups of people or is it all hit and miss?  I'd love to find some like minded Glitches out there!

  • Click on the Groups link above.  There are many groups.  You should be able to find one or more to suit you.

  • Ah, right, the Groups page.  The big link up there that I completely ignored!  Awesome!  *mutters something about needing glasses*

I'm still wondering if there's any kind of beginner to intermediate tutoriasl out there.  Any additional help besides here's how you squeeze a chicken and get stuff out of a pig?  Or is that sort of intentional right now so players can go discover on their own?

  • in response to your last post, yes, I think it's intentional! no tutorials that I know of, but I think you are meant to explore! there are many interesting lands and things to see out in the world. I spent my time between quests mining, cooking, and exploring; mining to donate and sell to make money and save up for an awesome house...cooking to keep my energy up and learn new recipes, and exploring just to fuel my curiosity. You can also start working on trophies, which is like a quest in itself. Search trophies in wiki...I'm sure you will find plenty to keep yourself busy!

  • Everyone plays a different game. Take a look at the Skill tree, see what Skills appeal to you and start learning those. Learning Skills will automatically give you new Quests and soon you will be making your own "Quests". Hunt after achievements or throphies...

Try exploring the wiki more, it will help you get an insight in the game and create your own path.

  • Hi Rusty!
I was a late arrival to beta, and have now worked myself up from 'newbie' to level 15-20 twice. Here is what I think may be a helpful strategy to advance beyond 'learning how not to die and other basics'.  I am still concentrating on gardening/cooking skills and am only now exploring other areas; it doesn't really matter how soon you decide what direction your game will take. Here are my thoughts. YMMV

To get the most out of the game, I suggest that the best thing to do is to learn ALL the skills as Victoria suggested. Each completed skill gives you a quest, which end up introducing you to all the different things you can do in Ur. AND you get badges, trophies, currents and XP for completing them, which helps you buy things and level up while learning.

Certainly do the things that interest you, but I think that at some point you will want all the other skills too.  As your game develops, and new possibilities also are created by the Giants, you may find that things you thought you didn't need will become important.

You will also be better prepared to make a decision about 'how to play the game' if you know all of its capabilities, and as a bonus, leveling up makes doing things easier as you progress. In the process you may also stumble on something that you did not know about which really appeals to you.

That is when you can decide if you are mainly a miner, a gardener/chef/farmer, a speculator (auctions, etc.), philanthropist (provide services, throw parties, start a bank, etc.) an adventurer/explorer/builder and so on. Then, you can look closer at the strategies you need for that particular set of goals. That would include reading the wiki, searching the forum, joining a group (or groups) and asking questions in the forum with a specific focus.

Another thing to help develop your own ideas and strategy is www.glitch-strategy.com  and the glitch-strategy Wiki. Both excellent sources of all kinds of things, as others have pointed out. If you haven't done so, go through the FAQ, 'New Player' links and other Quick links, just in case you missed some of the finer points while figuring out how to survive. They might all make more sense now, too!

For example, my magic rock just sent me to tour the Rook Museum, and now that I know what our fore-glitchen experienced I want to help protect us against the Rooks. When the rook attacks come, I want to be READY!!

Remember, it isnt about 'winning' it is about living as a glitchen and 'playing for a long, long time'.   Enjoy!
