Help me understand instanced locations

I know that some locations in Glitch are "instanced" -- which means that there can multiple copies of the location to limit the number of players present. For example, the Bureaucratic Halls are instanced. If you try to pack a crowd into a Bureaucratic Hall, you can't do it because people will go into different instances of the location.

So here's what I'd like to know: What locations in Glitch are instanced? How many people can be in one instance of these locations at the same time? Do instanced locations persist so that objects dropped in them by one player can later be found by another player? If I leave an instanced location and return shortly after, will I be returning to the same instance?

  • Axis Denyde is definitely instanced and I don't know if you can even follow someone in anymore. As far as I know, whether things you drop in an instanced location persist for other glitches varies depending upon the location in question

  • What locations in Glitch are instanced?
Races/Game of Crowns, Hell One (but not the rest of Naraka), Bureaucratic Halls, And so it begins/The Next Step/Start streets, Quest locations, Subway Trains, Party Locations, Le Voyage Violet.

How many people can be in one instance of these locations at the same time?
This depends on the instance. Game instances are limited to the max number of players (5 in Game of Crowns, 2 in other races). Most quest locations are limited to one instance. Bureaucratic Halls are generally one person instance unless people follow each other in. Subway Trains can have quite a few people. Party locations have around 70 people as max.

Do instanced locations persist so that objects dropped in them by one player can later be found by another player?
The instances persist as long as someone is in the instance (though Party locations are slightly different). Instances can still survive for some period of time after the last player in that instance leaves so there is some degree of possibility another player may find the same instance, but it is not common. Dropping objects in an instance is effectively deleting them from the game if no one finds it before the instance is destroyed.

If I leave an instanced location and return shortly after, will I be returning to the same instance?
This depends on how the instance was created and which instance you've gone to. Generally you probably won't but again there's a slight chance you might.

  • Hell One is instanced?  it seems to get pretty crowded there at end of day...

  • Yes there is a limit to the number of people that can be in Hell One, at which point anyone else entering Hell One would be put in a different instance. They would all look the same though.

  • Actually multiple people can enter the same instance of a subway train at different stops.

I have ridden a subway train that had a new rider join me at different stop than the one I got on at.

  • "Bureaucratic Halls are generally one person instance unless people follow each other in."
As far as I know, not true, but than again I wasn't there for quite some time, so it might be true after all. I'm not very helpful am I?
