I think a lot of people won't approve of the beer you drink in this game, including in a quest I just did. Teens or younger will play, and parents won't like it. You could call it something else.
Sierra, the devs have mentioned an age limit for the game. While i'm sure younger children will play, a lot of the themes and jokes are meant for late teens and up.
i think, and this is a personal view, that teenages see an awful lot worse than Beer in computer games - world of warcraft as an example. I wouldnt, again personally, be happy to see cigarettes in the game. I would be amazed if a teenage drank 12 beers because Glitch told them to - I say leave the beer in - my 2 cents.
It's not only beer either--there is ALOT of other types of alcohol in the game, so just renaming beer to "rootbeer" wouldn't fix it... if they wanted to do this they would just have to take the alcohol element out completely. I say, just keep the games for adults.
i'm having thread deja-vu... but I think it is quite clear by much more than the use of a "beer" that this game is intended for an audience that would be offended by such things. Therefore I think the discussion of avoiding such "controversies" as you refer to them is far far in the rear view mirror. By its entire nature the game is the kind of thing where this is OK.
If you are super-sensitive to these things you can pick on just about anything - from street names, to achievement badge titles, to naked censor bar, to being able to kiss someone without their consent, to awarding rewards for drinking and cocktail crafting, to all the in game chatting about dun broking the hoes. I wouldn't call edgy, but there is a clear attitude that the makers of the game want to establish. And in that world that's been established beer is OK.
I suspect the issue isn't as much with beer being in the game, but being forced to do a quest where there is over consumption of a potentially addictive (albeit virtual) alcohol. We all get that this game is more adult in views, but it would be nice if certain quests like this could be optional, or use alternate forms of drinks. I think the rootbeer idea is creative and providing an option for that quest if it is to remain might be less troublesome for players - "do you want to get drunk on beer or punch drunk on rootbeer" as options for this quest - choose your option and off you go to complete the quest...then if someone doesn't want to partake of the the beer, they don't have to...
Rather than be rid of beer entirely or change its name, why not just make it clear in its description that it's not beer as humans understand it? After all, mooning is doable here and is quite different than its objectionable counterpart in the real world. Milk in Glitch comes from butterflies and is, apparently, concentrated butterfly farts.
Beer in Glitch has no negative effects in the long-term. It just gets you buzzed for five minutes, giving mood and energy, and then has no effect, so obviously it's not alcoholic (or alcohol is very different for a Glitch than a human). It's more like coffee or soda than beer (as humans define it).
I think its silly alittle bit because teens who drink wouldent have time for games they would be out boozing and smoking :) Im only 14 and havent smoked or drunk atall and im proud to say i havent.
Wow, this is like 'the mention of 'boobies'' thread all over again.
The game is not intended for kids and is likely going to have a 16, maybe even 18 age rating. If you don't like these things, like sniffing No-No or even nibbling piggies, there is no inclination to do so and it won't give others who are willing to do so, an advantage in game-play.
Personally I adore the fact that Glitch is willing to go that little bit further than other games, and this is what gives it it's edge. I love not being censored on chat. The idea of No-No Powder, an in-game sniffable powder that gives you non-stop full mood and energy for a whole hour but you die if you don't take more within that hour, with the description "Some tempting no-no powder. You know you shouldn't, but maybe just this once..." , is just hilarious to me. Something to rejoice that *some one* on the Internet is willing to make a game like this. So, kudos to the developers of Glitch, sincerely, Hburger.
I have always seen this game as wholeheartedly one for quirky adults. The basis of the game is in innuendo and double entendre and the fact that the characters are cartoons just makes it all the funnier.Teenagers have seen MUCH worse on South Park, Family Guy, American Dad, even The Simpsons (let alone new adult cartoons such as Archer). My vote is for "leave it be" and keep it in the fun nature it was intended.
