Gardening V Disappointing

I honestly can't really tell the difference between Gardening IV & V from Gardening III it was a bit of a let down when i learned IV & V. I don't really feel like I get that many goodies or super harvests from harvesting which is what the skill described but I think I would rather get bigger yields maybe it's just me :[

  • The biggest, most noticeable difference is when you can suddenly harvest two times a day instead of once. All future upgrades seem pitiful in comparison. This isn't limited to gardening, but is true of many of the other skill trees as well.

  • Yeah, but at least Animal Kinship VII increased the base yield
Posted 14 months ago by Edouin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Hmmm... does it? What is the new yield? 1 extra meat per nibble or something? I don't think it's terribly noticeable.

  • Lol yeah but it was something there is hardly a difference between III IV & V in Gardening
Posted 14 months ago by Edouin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think the difference is that there is almost zero chance of getting a bonus surprise from a piggy when nibbling it, and completely zero chance of getting something from a butterfly, so the yield has to go up to make up for that.

  • I found no difference between Gardening IV and V, too. I was very disappointed.
I actually felt like I got LESS. D:

  • @Sherpherdmoon, I suppose.. but most people don't harvest/pet/water trees to get a surprise they do it to get the product from the trees. The little gifts are more of a bonus, at least it is for me

  • Well, sure, Edouin: but 24 fruit from a single tree is already alot...
Posted 14 months ago by Shepherdmoon Subscriber! | Permalink
  • What are you talking about Shepherdmoon? With AK VI I usually only got the six meat from nibbling a piggy twice, with AK VII I get a super harvest, plus TWENTY, almost every piggy! This in addition to getting eight meat instead of six. Which definitely adds up when you harvest a hundred piggies in a game day. An extra 2000 currants worth of meat.

AK VII offers serious rewards. In addition you get MANY more music blocks from chickens as well as plus ten grain per squeeze instead of five. All around it's a big improvement. :)

  • Plus Animal Kinship makes all the tasks instant while you still have a progression bar with Gardening
Posted 14 months ago by Edouin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yeah, the extra music blocks from chickens with AK7 is a big bonus, but you also get alot of blocks with AK6. I'm not sure what the increased probability is between the two, but they both have the bonuses. You do indeed get one extra meat per piggy nibble, with a bit of an increase in probability for a super harvest. You must be extraordinarily lucky, though, because I don't even come close to getting a super harvest every time.

Gardening V also increases the chances of a super harvest (so it's the same effect as an increased super harvest in AK), and increases the chances of getting a music block or other item (like booze or food). I get tons of extra items from tree harvests (I just completed Gardening V today, by the way). I probably get more extra items from trees than animals, especially considering that chickens are the only animals that give extra items.

Either way, for the relatively huge amount of time it takes to learn the highest level of both AK and Gardening, the increased rewards are hardly worth it.

  • I agree that Gardening V doesn't live up to its hype. It definitely doesn't offer "an altogether better class of bonus reward" as advertised.

  • As a proud gardener from the very beginning, the benefit of G5 is:

1: chance of bonus harvest increases. It's possible (though rare) to get up to 48 'fruit' from one tree. If the fruit is something valuable like eggs or gas, (4 currants each) a single tree can bring good money.

2: Not only do you get a better chance at random drops, but the *quality* of those drops changes. AT G5, trees will often drop the fertilidust light powder, allowing you to repair wood trees and other trees very fast for free. You also get more valuable music blocks more frequently, and the food drops give more energy on average.

A good reason to build gardening skills is that trees are practically everywhere, which means that you can make money easily while traveling. with gardening, you are never *NOT* making money. Trees also do not die as easily as animals on farm machines. I've made hundreds of thousands of currants rapidly just from gardening. It's a skill you just need to take time to understand.

  • Is the difference between 4 and 5 just random drops?  Because what I'm really after is yield, and I can already harvest 2 times per tree visit.

  • Wow. Really? Are we going to complain about everything, now?

I noticed awesome differences between just Gardening 4 and 5 (not to mention 3), the most noticeable being the amount of times I get a super-harvest, which does end up increasing my harvest yield at the end of the day.

Also, I'm never at a loss for donations/extra money because of all the music blocks I get, I tend to always have extra energy/mood from random drink/food drops, AND I have half a bag of fertilidust lite AND fertilidust, which I did not have to make or buy.

The skill description is very clear about what it does. It doesn't imply that you'll get to harvest more times a day, harvest for less energy, or that you're guaranteed more each time you harvest. So if the skill doesn't look good to you, don't learn it.

For instance, I don't really care about Snapshotting I. So instead of learning it and then coming on the forums to say how much I think it sucks because I never take screen shots anyway, I am choosing not to learn it until I either decide I do want to do that or until I have nothing else to learn. See? My problem is solved and I didn't have to whine about anything.

All you have to do to decide whether or not you want a skill is to read what the skill says it does. That's it. And if you're in the forums posting about it, I assume you are literate.

  • You do realize even having a better chance at super harvests, it is still a random chance?
Posted 14 months ago by Warrender Subscriber! | Permalink
  • About Super-Harvest chances...

With G4 from every 1000 fruits harvested i was getting about 70 bonus fruits.

With G5 from every 1000 fruits harvested i'm getting about 90 bonus fruits.

OMG +2% chance of supper harvest for learning 3 day skill? Sooo nice, man. =\

  • So take it later, when you have nothing else you want to learn, like Quirk posted.

  • I feel like I get better drops from harvesting/watering/hoeing since I finished Gardening V.

I definitely get better drops from trees since finishing LGT III.  I get things like awesome stews and SWFs from them now.

Between the two of them, I have so many music blocks I have to hit the shine several times a day just to keep my bags empty-ish.

  • I wish if you got the gifts from trees somtimes I really don't want them.

  • I don't know why you're coming off so hostile Quirk. I am simply saying that compared to other last tier skills like Gardening V is disappointing. I'm glad that you found the skill to be worthwhile but I'm entitled to my opinion of being disappointed. Also you can't really compare Gardening V to an entry level skill like Snapshotting I

  • I found that the number of music blocks (AND the rarity of the blocks) increased quite dramatically once I got Gardening5.

I've been harvesting from virtually every tree I've passed since day 1 & had one block still missing in each of two series. The evening I got Gardening5, I completed both series with blocks handed to me during tree harvests.

Not saying it's as valuable a skill as Tinkering5 or Teleportation5, but I definitely noticed an worthwhile improvement.

  • Edouin,

I wasn't typing out of hostility. I was typing out of amazement. I was amazed that someone was complaining because they didn't get more perks from a skill than the skill description said they would get. And yes, my comparison stands. I can compare the two skills quite easily since we're talking about expectations when learning a skill and not what the skill actually does.

Perhaps, if you're disappointed (as you have every right to be), you will take time to read and understand the skill description next time you start learning a skill in order to avoid further disappointment. Just saying.

Sorry if you find that hostile. I seriously do not mean it to be. Just splank me in game. ;)

  • I agree with several gripers here, compared to other top-tier (or even 4 vs 5) skills, Gardening 5 is really disappointing. The uptick isn't enough to warrant such a giant time sink in comparison.

Further, Quirk, regardless of what a skill "says" it does, I am disappointed because (1) it doesn't seem to really 'work as advertised' for me. As another poster noted: the uptick isn't noticeable; and (2) I'm disappointed even WITH knowing what I'd get because it's nowhere near as reasonable compared to other high-end skills with it's benefits.

I'm not coming to this all shocked and bewildered, I'm merely saying the benefits of Gardening 5 don't feel balanced and they need to be looked into.

  • I just finished up Gardening 5. It may not be the most powerful skill upgrade ever, but I'm enjoying the better grade of loot and increased super harvests.

Now, if you want to talk about a skill that's -really- disappointing, look no further than the Meditation line. I took Meditative Arts I, II, III, and Transcendental Radiation in order to see if I could help out my fellow miners. Even with all of that, I'm lucky if I give each person in the area 20 energy and mood. My last round of radiation ended at 5. Did I mention the cooldown for that is 2 minutes? Holy christ, I know I needed some of those skills for Martial Imagination and Piety, but it may as well not even exist if it's going to be that weak.

Focused Meditation is slightly better, but still worthless to me. I have 1250 max energy and mood. I'm not going to stand there meditating for 20 seconds to recover 40 energy or mood. If I could unlearn the whole line, I would, even if it means I can no longer help during rook attacks. But that wouldn't even be much of a downside, seeing as how I've never even seen a rook attack.

I'm hoping they'll buff meditation eventually.

  • I am very glad to have read this post because I am currently learning Gardening V and there are 4.25 days left so I think I'm going abort that since I am really quite satisfied with IV!

  • As far as the meditation line goes...You can meditate while using any of the pale blue or tan skills: cooking, making drinks, grinding spices, bubblemaking, etc.  This offsets energy costs a lot.
