Higher level players who still look like brand new glitchen

When I come across a glitchen whose avatar is still one of the 4 brand-new-glitchen looks, I usually info them to see how new they are and (probably) to give them a gift or two. I am always surprised when I occasionally discover one of them to be fairly high level - there's at least one somewhere in the 40's levels. I can't help but wonder why they have chosen never to customize their appearance at all. Is it a bold statement or just a total lack of interest in that particular aspect of the game or ????? If one of you who fits this mould happens to read this post, could you tell us, what's your reason for not customizing your appearance? Enquiring minds want to know!

  • Sloppy - perhaps. However I think the accusation players are somehow being deceitful because they've never changed their looks is rather untoward. People being 'taken to task' or badgered about changing their looks is a new level of unpleasant. It's not the OP's query I have an objection to - it's the judgement of players based solely on the appearance they have (or have not) given their avatar. The overtone of 'only new players should look like new players' is disheartening. Players should look as close to the way they desire, without input or malicious assumptions from others.

  • @ Wandering Confusion---1 person posted a negative experience (xombiekitty)

the "taken to task" was my comment and i added explanation that it was in good fun 2 minutes after I posted. It had context hours before you posted. Please don't use it to make a big deal.

1 person posting negative experiences means that there are few people who care what others are dressed like. And of those who care there are even fewer who say anything.

ETA: thanks for the folks posting the alpha "newbie' screenshots ^.^

  • It's not your comment M<3tra, it's the premise of the entire thread: that 'high level players should not look like new players'. Why not? Is there some mandate I'm not aware of? If so I'd like to be educated. The accusations and assumptions made as to the intent behind the lack of customization, those are a whole new level of social norm-ing for Glitch.

  • That's not the premise of the thread at all, Wandering Confusion. Someone was merely wondering what the various reasonings behind the choice might be, and others chipped in their ideas or experiences. That's not the same as saying that older players shouldn't look like newer players. It's just curiosity.

  • I have no interest in customising my appearance.  Doesn't make any difference to the game for me.  I guess I don't identify with my game character in any real way – it's just a game.

  • i was "original look" until level 43, i decided to change my clothes about a month ago for the first time. you're correct in that i have very little interest in the customizable aspect of this game. i'm in the zynga 12 step program and fiddling too much with custom aspects gives me the shakes.

  • Well . . .  I never altered the basic look because a) the basic look I selected reminds me of an old photo of myself (in a similar shirt at age five); b) I liked the idea of having a look that is identical to other players (sort of like the Agent Smiths in The Matrix; and c) (ironically, given this thread) I'm an introvert and didn't especially want random people paying attention to the way I looked, virtually or otherwise.

Anyway, thanks for the amusing thread.   I've been in the Maine woods for a few weeks, too remote for internet robust enough to actually play Glitch, so this is the next-best-thing.

  • I have never presumed that anyone would have a certain look based on lvl, and this is the first I've heard of anyone thinking so. We still dress how we dress in game simply because we want to, and no other reason really. As with other appearance options, its all optional here, and thats a great thing!

  • Leites - I like your Agent Smith analogy. It gave me that sort of unsettled feeling at the last launch when I would suddenly find two or three identical looking glitchen wandering around a street. I was never certain whether they were a feral pack or totally unconnected lost souls. It's sure to happen again when we relaunch.

And to those who try to read judgementalism into this thread, it just ain't there. Those few who keep the unvarnished newbie look are the true nonconformists of Glitch. When I come across people who make choices so obviously different from those of the vast majority I am always curious about just what makes them tick. And I find it whimsically ironic that in this case those who make no attempt to distinguish themselves in some ways become the most noticeable!

  • I changed my look before I even played the game! (I accepted the invitation when I was on a computer that only ran a very old version of IE and it did not have flash whatsoever!)

I really love my antlers and my light up shoes!

  • I bought my upgrades my first day and have never changed it since. Why? I like it! I don't play super often and have rarely been on since the new housing change (been awhile) but I'm still happy with what I originally picked out. My girlfriend (now a level 45 subscriber) has never changed her look either. She seems to dig the turtleneck and jeans thing. Plus, although she does have some "outfits", she doesn't seem to think anyone would "recognize" her in different clothes.

  • I have the same fear about recognition - I've had this look for a very long time. And the look I had before that I had for a very long time too. The only think I've changed since I bought this outfit was new eyes. I guess that doesn't really pertain to the conversation - but I guess the longer you go with one look the harder it is to change!

Side note - I'm convinced that since I've changed my name no one know's who I am - I am alone! All alone!

  • I'll admit that I thought the same thing that brought out the defensiveness here, that older players dressed as newbies were looking for freebies. Now that I know the truth behind it, I won't make that connection again. Still, you can't tell people how to think. If you're going to be a level 45 in newbie clothing, there's gonna be some people who don't believe it's because you don't get into the designing thing. If you don't care what people think, more power to ya, but I'd have to wonder if that were entirely true after reading the posts here.
