Just considering... Glitch shock for newcomers

Today, while I was meditating on the sorry mess my glitchian brain is (so overloaded with skills) and my house is (so overloaded with stuff), etc. I remembered how terribly confusing Glitch looked to me the first time I got in, quite a few months ago. Everything was so weird... Things had names and functions that didn't make sense... People talked about stuff I couldn't even conceive, and doing anything was so incredibly difficult (but rewarding)!

Then I considered how much new rules, stuff, skills and so on have been added to the game since then. I sort of managed to keep pace with every expansion, yet sometimes there are still things that elude me.

So... how shocking must Glitch be to a NEW newcomer now? An exciting shock, for sure... but it really must look overwhelming to them poor glitchies...

  • Not necessarily. Some of the interfaces are a lot easier - and storage (no need to buy a house, you have a place of your own by default) is much simpler. I'd actually be very interested to play from the beginning.

  • If there were such a thing as a temporary mind wipe, I would love to erase my many hundreds of hours of Glitch from my memory and experience it again anew. Lots of awesome changes :)

  • The skill page may be a bit confusing...

  • I think part of the beauty of it is how many things there are to do, I'm discovering new stuff about this game just about every day. It's a  bit overwhelming at first, but for me it was in a good way. I felt like I was suddenly in some strange world where nothing made sense yet and I had to figure it all out, which makes each thing I figure out feel more personal and more engrossing. Plus, I think that's alot of why they're doing this new tutorial, is to explain things ver ywell for players entering the world. I think it'll all be fine :) I trust these devs, they're making a great game!

  • @phoenix, i hate the skills page now, like "how many shades of one colour can we use" must have been the goal!
My favourite memory of being a noob is asking the helper if they were a bot or a human, trying different questions, and then running away when i realised they may have actually been human!

  • The way I separated the skills was by looking at the picture, now it's like trying to memorise a periodic table.

EDIT: I was actually too shy as a newbie to ask for a greeter :P

  • @OL Us greeters are definitely human ;)

  • I'm so glad you posted this! I have been thinking lately how much I still don't know.I was at a friends house yesterday and he had a dust bunny he said it came from a dust stick. This is only one example of things that still elude me.The ONE thing that really does elude me the most is keys.I have a gazillion keys but usually the door I come upon needs a key that I don't have.Still with a full time job I find this game the best daily decompression  I have found :)

  • @ OL

I thought my greeters were bots too. I think one was in training maybe, because the way they talked to each other was what made me think it.
They were so very very cheerful, and I doubted the human mind's ability to emit so much happiness ;)

I am excited for the Invite link to come back to us. I have wanted to start fresh since the upgrade cards happened. "Soon"....
I feel like it will actually be a lot more fun not only compared to how I played when I started almost a year ago, but also more fun than how I play now, as a well-experienced player with my mind so full!

  • I really don't like the new skills table. The low contrast forces me to squint, and it's lost the warmth the old table conveyed. The old icons are still there, but you have to hover over the new ones to see them. New players that know nothing about the skills will have to hover over all of them to get a feeling of what they're related to, and information dumps like that could overwhelm people. If the old icons were the ones first showed, players could see the tree icons for arborology and immediately understand those skills are related to trees. I also think that some of the icons should be redone; for example, Fruit Changing should show a cherry, or a bunch of fruits, etc.

One of the reasons new players can't join is because the tutorial is being revamped... So the shock might not be as great as worried.

  • Yeah, skills table used to be pretty.

  • I see what you mean, but then, the game is enormous anyway. I joined a few months ago and I spent most of the first three months stumbling around the same few streets of Muufo watching my inventory slots fill up and trying to figure out what I should sell in order to buy a Bag or two. Then I saved up enough to buy a treehouse in Tamila and, having not yet learned Teleportation, spent more hours walking back and forth to the mines of Pollokoo or the nearest Subway station (Mallos Means in Bortola) than I ever did actually *exploring* or *playing*.

So I think starting out with a small space to call your own, where you can safely stash cubimals and equipment and music blocks and excess emblems, which you can jump back to without it taking hours or costing lots of energy, is going to be a very useful device for new players and make the playing experience a lot simpler - while also giving it the option of being even more complicated once the player decides to open the "furniture" can of worms. :)
