Is Ajaya Bliss the answer to everyone's foul attitude?

I've recently discovered the heart of the mining community, Ajaya Bliss! Only problem is it's turned in to Africa, Everybody seems to turn into animals and lose all their manners, gratidute, kindness and fairness, making up rules that there is a food pile, and you can't 'steal' from it, I had  multiple things stolen because I 'stole' stuff from the 'pile', the pile is a good idea and all but everybody's attitude just get switched to foul, angry, aggressive and mean, even the nicest, most preppy glitchens go feral and turn into animals, I visit reguarly and I see teamwork and kindness from most glitchens but 50% of visitors are feral, foul attituded, mean- just to name a few, people even say things like this when people just walk in to the street

'Okay, hello and welcome to Ajaya Bliss, you've probably never been here before so I'll state the rules: no 'stealing' from the food pile, you must add 5 things to the pile to take stuff from the pile, and many more other long lectured speeches about 'rules', I think we need to improve Ajaya Bliss, Make it so things can be taken if someone has dropped it and it's under their feet, make it so freedom of speech is lowered a bit, and just be plain out NICE for a change, for some of you that's probably a novel concept, but it has to be done, so I have come to a conclusion that Ajaya Bliss might be the causing for some foul behaviour, or people are just born foul-behaved

  • As this 'newspaper' appears to be Tabloid style, can we expect to read stories of alien abductions, two headed piggies and drug filled orgies in Ur? Will there be horoscopes and a problem page?

Is someone going to start a rival Broadsheet? Some Glitchen think there should be "The Ur Socialist Worker" available at the Street Vendors.

Where has the OP/Editor gone? Undercover to expose sleazy behaviour at the Candy Swap?

    So many questions ;-)

  • In defense of the "Africa" reference.  I don't think it was intended to be racist at all.  It is a reference to the multitude and wealth of animals on that continent.  When we think of "Wild Animals", we often think of Africa.  Behavior in Ajaya Bliss is being compared to the actions of wild animals who spend every waking moment surviving.  They know nothing of manners, they know survival.  We Glitchen, OTOH, have no reason to behave that way.  Our world is filled with abundance.  No one is going to starve to death in "Glitch" so cool it with the greed and just enjoy the Game.

  • Good grief, there are multiple races in Africa, the author clarifies they meant wild animals. I didn't take it as racist, but if people are being offended and relate an entire continent to one race, then it's another issue.

-edit, code chic makes very good replacement suggestions

Brib Annie: I'm thinking that you're correct it wasn't intended to be racist but unfortunately sometimes our intentions don't match up with what we portray.

  • There's a historical context to certain words and phrases and if we're unaware of those contexts then it can make us sound to some like jerks when we use them.  I know how easy it is to make mistakes like this because a lot of times it's so easy to be unaware of the contexts and that's why I say that I don't think the OP was intending anything negative towards any racial group.

edit to add: I should also say that I was not personally offended by the Africa statement and was just trying to see things from the points of view of those who were or might be.  I am not a member of a minority racial/ethnic group so when it comes to these things I need to take my cues from those people who are.  Obviously I don't know who is and who isn't on threads like these but it's always best, I think, to err on the side of apologizing for any offense we may have caused, which in this case could have been easy to do.

  • We walk around on spindly legs, always careful not to offend anybody who we might offend by not knowing how we might offend them.  Never touching, never really knowing.  But always careful, walking around on our spindly legs.

    That's no way to live.

  • Theres like a lot of accusing and defending going on in here. And i dont think its really needed.
If you can look inside the posters head and heart, you can siuggest how this and that had been meant.
Only thing i can say is that its wasnt the best idea to use that comparison, as it shows, you´re using such flat stereotypes (the bad connotation of which you can see coming up in this thread). Please, please go to Africa and educate yourself about it there (though it might take a while as its not too small and pretty much diverse ;) )

  • Excuse my American analogy:
Intentions are like pennies. There are a lot of them and they don't add up to much. Also, a lot of places won't let you exclusively use them to pay for anything that costs over a dollar.

All that being said, if anyone has any pennies (or intentions) they want to get rid of, I have a jar. Once it gets too heavy, I'm gonna cash it all in at the bank and go out and buy myself a present. So whether or not your intentions (or pennies) were for me to get a present, I thank you anyway.

  • Ok um... 1. Disney was super racist. They just don't show the cartoons anymore. Edit: go to YouTube and look up deleted scenes from "fantasia".

    2. I think the op should have maybe used a different place or maybe wrote the statement differently.

    3. I think this post is full of people that are trying to instigate a fight for no reason. I know we can be better than this.

  • Ajaya Blissis is NO longer a place where hand-written Rules/Etiquettes are allowed! And by hand-written...anything typed onto a piece of note paper supplied from an indigenous paper tree. Any new rules will be issued on new signs like those around the Community Gardens. Okie Dokie?

  • -Intent isn't magic. Despite that, everyone's given her the benefit of the doubt and been -very- nice in their call-outs, which, mind, isn't (not should it be) necessary. But this is glitch, and people like to be positive. No one's name-calling, or being hurtful; they're pointing out that the Africa comment is hurtful, and part of why it's a super-crappy thing to say.
No one's calling her a racist, they're saying "That thing you said was racist." There's a difference. And a handy Jay Smooth video to clarify the point.
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0T...

-Disney was hella racist. Disney -remains- hella racist (depictions of all the mains in Aladdin, anyone?). Hella misogynistic too, while we're on the ostensible virtues of Disney.

-Racism is more subtle and prevalent than just caricatures of The (American) Southern Good Ol' Boy. Go dive into an anti-racist space and come away amazed at what you learn.

  • 1. LOLOLOL @ "Glitch news journalist"
    2. Africa?? Really?? I'm shocked you didn't compare it to the "ghetto" or "Mexico" but I guess you were looking for something with a little more undertone and not so in your face, however, it didn't really go over well.
    3. The food stock pile is stupid. "no 'stealing' from the food pile, you must add 5 things to the pile to take stuff from the pile". So whats the point of this pile then? Seriously? So I have to give up 5 things in order to take one or even two? Or do I have to donate 5 so I can take 10? I hate rules like this. Drop if you want to drop, take if you want to take. Whatever you get rid of and is no longer in your inventory, is free for anyone who wants it. Plain and simple.
    4. Stop with the stupid forum posts Miss Purple, this one is as bad as your adverts.

  • Other than that, Miss Purple, you were the one yelling at someone whom was AFK, therefore, you cannot pick up the food as it belongs to that person specifically, and clearly, the amount of things you drop does not matter, its simply as Marla stated, drop off what you can. I don't know what makes you think your obligated to drop something in order to grab something from the food pile. I don't even recall hearing nor reading that rule, unless you made that up.

  • I returned to Bliss for the first time in a few months last week. Most of the people in at the time seemed fine, but there were a two or three paper notes left around talking about Ajaya rules, the food pile, and so forth and so on - all of them written by one person. I thought it was silliness, and I did what I thought was appropriate. I picked up all the notes and tossed them in the nearest shrine, which is what I do with most notes.

I came back a time or two after, mostly because I wanted to get a better sense of what was going on in Bliss and see whether it was becoming like Neva. When I came back, there was a new note, demanding to know who took the previous notes. I explained to the writer of this note that I took the notes, he then promptly went into global declaring I was a "note thief", and then said he was going to tell the original author that I took her notes.

After talking with the original note author, watching how Bliss treated Miss Purple when she came in when I was there (quick! pick up the food pile before she steals everything!), there's a messed up dynamic going on here, and a lot of it centers on silliness - like the food pile. Use the auctions and be responsible for your food. Or ask for it. I, and many others, are happy to help out people that need food.

When I raised this point, the only response was either 1) we like the food pile or 2) some people are too scared to ask. To which I can only say, if you put out food on a game predicated on people picking up things, expect it will be taken and don't worry about it. If people are too scared to ask for food, perhaps that says something about the culture being created?

And, as an aside to all those that say, "If you don't like it, don't go there." The problem is that there are places I used to like, Neva Neva and then Bliss being the two primary examples, that are good for new people to make currants - and they are going to bring what they learn there into other areas of the game. Let's hope that they don't develop a taste for "rules", "leaders" and a culture of petty tyranny.

'rules', 'leaders' and a culture of petty tyranny

  • AB is getting as bad as Neva Neva, that's all i'm going to say... :/ and what a pity!!
Posted 11 months ago by LittleAngel Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I must only go to AB when the nice people are there. It seems to be more loosey-goosey and cater to more Type B personalities who are more "live and let live" than some other more structured, "do it like this," Type A areas. This is not to say that more structured / Type A kinds of cooperative methods are bad or inferior, just different. And that's OK.

In fact, there was a new-to-me person in there just the other day proposing that everyone go in a specific order and tap the rock at the exact same time and to wait for the slow guy in the corner (who might have actually been AFK) and radiate at a certain time on a certain rock formation and...and...and...(etc.); finally someone said, kindly enough, that the thought behind all the "suggestions" was fine--cooperating is fun!--but that AB is typically a lot more low key than certain other areas, and neither area's preferred way of doing things was better, it was just different and that was how the crowd in AB at the time preferred it, no offense, hope you'll hang with it and have fun with us, etc. (And, IIRC, the person trying to impose a more structured, "do it this way and only this way" mining style DID stay, and DID have some fun.)

I am not in there every single day, to be fair. Maybe the derrieres chapeaux come out in force when I am off doing other things elsewhere.

As for OP's "Africa" and "yuppie" comments...what is this I don't even

  • I've never had this problem in Ajaya Bliss -- just mine and have a good time and stop grieving over behavior you can't control. (Although personally, I get more sparkly just traversing through Ilmenskie Deeps caves than I do in Ajaya Bliss, but YMMV.)

I'm also not touching that "it's turned into Africa" comment, even though it was a poor allusion.
Posted 11 months ago by Shadowstrike Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Ack. So I've only been dragged into AB once, however I'm familiar with the whole "social mining" concept in the form of Neva Neva, which I've (unfortunately) been to five times. So I usually try to play by their rules and all when forced to go in for whatever reason (wait for others, etc...), however I occasionally screw up (needless to say, mining my way to level 60 turned it into a reflex action that's somewhat outside my control). However, while I have the respect to play by these rules whilst mining there, I do have to ask... who came up with them, and why is it that people think they have the right to enforce them? I mean, splanking people who don't follow them? C'mon, what is this, elementary school? That said, maybe I'm completely missing what these Neva/Ajaya wars are about, since I generally try to avoid those places. I can mine way more sparkly on my own, so it's just not my cup of tea.

(hopefully I've managed to move this topic back on track from the analogy that everyone's arguing over; which I'd imagine was completely not the discussion the author intended us to have)

  • I love Ajaya and I've never had a problem there.  I've accidentally started mining without "waiting", I've taken rather than traded food*, etc. and no one has ever freaked out about it.  Of course my experience =/= a general statement of truth in all cases, but I don't think it's reasonable to state that a few negative experiences can describe an entire group, either.

I no longer find it particularly time-effective to mine in AB since I maxed out Mining, but I still go there sometimes for fun and community.

*Please don't think badly of me, I have certainly also GIVEN instead of trading food as well!

I would like to just follow the rules of the game, not one set up play rude players.
