Ur needs more character. I want a redneck yard theme.

A shack.
A view of strip-mined mountains.
Yard furniture - a rusted truck on blocks, a fridge without a door,  Humbella in a half of an old tire painted white, a pile of old tires with weeds growing through them.
My bot-ler (missing some teeth) sits on the front porch in a rocker with a shotgun.  I will name him "Cleatus."

Pit-pigs live under the front porch and the pack comes out to chase unwanted visitors away.

There are quite a few cultural references, e.g.

    Meat Gumbo
    Gamma's Pancakes

    Noun:A country bumpkin.

From what I've noticed, Glitch is a mash up of a ton of cultures. There are Japanese themed furniture items, music that has a Scottish influence (at least to me. I'm not a native of that area so I may be off by a few thousand square miles), and the kissing bear is decidedly European (referring to the custom to kiss friends on the cheek as a greeting).

(and I agree with other posters-already mash up of cultures here!)
(although I wouldnt personally use the theme except at zillerween , it would still amuse me to no end to visit streets like that) ..
And the theme music to the street would have to be interesting too! --hmm cant think of a great song at the moment ( no coffee yet) ..maybe like the "Picking and Grinning " song
from the Hee Haw show , "Devil went down to Georgia" , opening song to Dukes of Hazzard , Rocky Top , Country Roads , ( rofl) ???
Plus, I'd want a costume change for my gnomes- maybe they could have the little red flap seat long johns and a straw hat and a piece of grain hanging out of their mouth ? and I'd have fun making them say "you might be a red neck sayings" .
ALSO - can we please be able to make cheese grits from all that corn we grow ? and biscuits with milk gravy and a side of crispy BACON ! (now I'm hungry ) -since i can already make the fried eggs to go with! . (and maybe a casserole that freezes beautifully too)
Oohh - and a Mint Julep cocktail recipe please -for us , uppity types- that don't drink jugs of hooch in public. :D

  • Isn't that mildly racist? "Red neck" is in general a racist term. What if someone asked for a painted face instead? Would that still be adding "character" ?

I think this has to be better thought through.

Not saying that anyone is racist, but there is certainly an overlooked race element to making characters based on " rednecks'.
Posted 6 months ago by Thursday Soleil Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Erm... Which race exactly is red neck a slur toward? Where I live, further out in the country, a redneck is thought of as a more farm oriented individual. Maybe they drove their tractor to school once as a joke, or like to wear John Deer clothing.

It's generally derogatory in my neck of the woods, but certainly not a race thing.

  • There are rednecks everywhere, most of them proud to be rednecks. The red neck is actually referring to the 'farmer's tan' that one gets from working outdoors, usually on a farm. If you spend enough time looking down while planting, hoeing, harvesting, you'll get a red neck, too.

+1 to the idea, I love it.

  • redneck  n.  Slang.  1. A member of the white rural laboring class, esp. in the southern United States. 2.  Offensive.  Slang. A person who advocates a provincial, conservative, often bigoted sociopolitical attitude considered characteristic of a redneck.

Personally, I'd like more varied backgrounds and styles... Ix-style streets, a carnival (gigantic game show wheels, a carousel with ride-on pigs, chickens, and yetis, a sno cone vendor...), a cityscape, a Zilloween-themed street, a snowy winter scene, a seascape, and so on.

More importantly, I'd like to be able to jump onto the platforms in the backgrounds and onto the roof of any house.  It's just plain weird to see steps and floating islands and not be able to access them.

  • We have Bacon!  All we need is an old truck on blocks and stackable TVs.

"You may be a Redneck if the TV that works is sitting on top of the one that doesn't" - Jeff Foxworthy

I remember that because it describes my setup.  I can't move the broken one so...  maybe it helps that I live in the South.

  • What if someone asked for a car with 22 inch rims and hydraulics?  With rap instead of banjo?
And what if they asked for a skillet of fried chicken.

And they wanted to base it on "nigga" instead of "redneck"

    Is that racial?

Just because people are proud of something doesn't make it right to exploit.

And with that thought I am bowing out because:  \ I really don't care what tiny speck does.  I just thought I would voice the racial issue.

  • also + a whole bunch to what glum said -
more varied backgrounds , but in keeping with the Ur world style spirit , would be really cool!

(also , not sure how to say this : I am a Southerner, and I wasn't trying to agree for the offensive part of red-neck , I was more agreeing with the humorous (to me anyway ) , fun , 'silly country-farm-rube- people' type thing - if that makes sense. )

and hugs to my friend Thursday - who is such a sweet , thoughtful person , to point out that the term and intent of "redneck" can be offensive to people and that we should be considerate of others feelings! *hugs *

  • I prefer to consider the referrals as iconic, rather than racist. I'm aware of the possible bad use of the term, but nobody here has named anything offensive tied to it.
I'm British, and I live in Italy. I can think of a dozen offensive terms that could be used for both, but if I could make fish-fingers and custard while dressed like the queen, or pizza while sitting on a gondola playing a mandolin, I'd think it was hilarious.

  • "Redneck" is a fun thing not necessarily a derogatory term so lighten up.  I was born in the South and have lived most of my life in the South.  We enjoy being "Rednecks" even though most of us have never farmed or worked hard in the sun (that's how you get a red neck).  we have so many festivals it's incredible.  Just Google "Redneck Fest" or "Bubbbafest", etc.  Yes, there are several of these throughout the South and they are Fun!

We also have tons of other kinds of festivals and celebrations of Southern Life.  We have flower festivals of all kinds - Magnolia, Azalea, Rose, etc.  We have food festivals and produce festivals celebrating Pecans, Peaches, Onions, Brunswick Stew, probably even Bacon.  We celebrate our history and various cultures that have contributed to Southern life.  We fly many flags even though some are controversial.  This is the South.  There are good and great people here and we are all proud of being here (most of us I think).  We seem, in fact, to be taking over the world or at least a large part of the States.  You cannot turn on the TV without seeing Southern culture.  So, don't demean the Redneck.  It was Rednecks that made the South great.  It was Rednecks who labored so that we could have what we have today and it is Rednecks who continue to work hard in the sun so don't get huffy and "Politically Correct" because we don't take to that kind of thing.  Come on down and enjoy the sun and the flowers and the food and the history.  Come and visit with us for a while.  You may never leave.  That's why Florida is full of Yankees, there's no better place!

Dare I post this?  Yes!  BTW, Mama was a Texas Belle from the Hill Country and Daddy was a Yankee from Minneapolis.  Me, I am a "Tarheel".

  • Redneck and Southern Culture are not one in the same.

To lump them together is a choice but to speak for all Southerners and assume they all accept the term "redneck" is ignorant.

    That is equal to saying:
Towel head is the same as Arabic Culture.  If people chose to call themselves Towel Head it still does not equate to being part of that culture.  It also doesn't mean it is right to exploit. It is like saying Ghetto or Nigga is the same as African American Culture.

To say people want to introduce Southern Culture to the game is different.

We have a responsibility to not continue a racial stereotype and slur. That isn't being politically correct - it is doing the right thing because to do otherwise is wrong.

I have been to the South, and have lived in the South. Not once did I see a car jacked up on someone's lawn with stills in their front yard.

I have a valid argument against the idea. Simple fact is "Redneck" is a racial term.

Edited for tone.  Just checking to make sure I am not directing my attention at anyone person more so the issue.

  • We can agree to disagree.  "Redneck" is NOT a racial term or at least it did not start out that way.  Some use it in Fun, some may mean it another way.  I have lived in the South most of my life (all but about 6 years) and I have never known anyone who was offended by it or at least no one I know admitted to be offended.  We are all different, have different views, different ideas.  I certainly do not wish to offend anyone and if I have, I do apologize with all of my heart.

  • The OP was mostly in fun, inspired by the requests for yard furniture.   IMO redneck is more of a 'class' term than a 'race' term, but I agree with Thursday that it's not something I would want added to the game as-is.  I would also agree with glum that what I would really want to see in glitch is more glitch-y stuff.  Gumbala landscapes pull from real-world landscapes.  Groddle landscapes are more cartooney, with lumps of scenery that float in the sky.  Mazzala is in some ways my favorite - a coherent world of it's own that bears little relationship with our real world.  Then there's Ix and Illimskie.  We really need more like the last three.

Except I really do want to have my bot-ler sitting on my porch in a rocker with a shotgun.  I just do.

  • I... Uh...

I'm also from the south, but do not consider myself a redneck. A number of people in my family will happily lay claim to that title and wear it quite proudly (my mother & stepfather had their wedding in my grandpa's shop because it rained, and it was set to the tune of the "Oh Brother where art thou?" soundtrack. But that is a story for a different day). Perhaps, having grown up in an area where it was quite common, my opinion is biased. To me it is a cultural term, not a racial slur. It's a lot like saying someone's a Goth or New Yorker. Those are terms that people freely label themselves with (If that makes sense) and are quite proud of.

If someone were to call me a redneck, my first reaction would be confusion mainly because I don't fit that description (At all. In fact, my mother finds it quite distressing). I know several highly educated people who call themselves rednecks.
However, I do understand your reasoning and do not believe it's incorrect. But from, my point of view it is not an offensive term.

Also, I would not put a toilet in my street, but I find the idea to be quite funny. There was a neighbor down the road from my grandparents who had one and planted a flower bed in it.

  • As someone who has lived in the south, I would say that rednecks would find the political correctness itself to be more offensive than calling them rednecks or stereotyping their lifestyle.

Rednecks don't get all whiney over words, after all. They're a laid back bunch who like their old fashioned American freedom, they don't mince words or worry about walkin' on eggshells like people suddenly are these days.

Things that were normal everyday speech are now rapidly being considered offensive to some groups of people when it was understood as everyday speech before. Things are changing, and it ain't for the better. Now everyone is so worried about what slang they use or what they say or whatever because it might offend 'someone' (usually someone who isn't even a part of the group they say it's offending!). Let's go back to the good ol' days when our first amendment right was a part of our life and people actually knew and understood that!

+1 for redneck motif upgrades. :D
