Chat interface ideas

I adore the community of testers in this game! I love the community aspect of this game! I'm sure there are plans to improve that piece of the game, but I just thought I'd post a list of things that I wish we had while I'm talking and playing.

- Pinging! A distinct noise that plays when someone says your name, a keyword or opens a new IM with you.
- IRC commands like /me for actions and perhaps a /topic on chats would be fantastic.
- Expanded chat pane/pop out window for chats? I can only keep a couple open at a time and would like to be able to be a part of more chats without straining to see whats going on. Maybe a tabbed chat window like Adium? One text field, multiple tabs with chats. I think that would work best.

except for the global chat thing. that would never scale to the number of players glitch is aiming to have.

I'd like a @mentions pane, though that requires more username tracking within the chat interface.

I'd also like a larger typeface. I know real estate is at a premium but it sure makes me squint to follow all the chatting.

Thinking about the New Streets group usage, Project item reporting and coordination seems to not fit a chat particularly well. People end up repeating things a lot, as people pop in and out. Pinning some (wiki-like) notes to the chat would help keep the Project status clear for those away from the Street Spirit.

  • Yeah, something needs to be done about chat. It's cumbersome as is..

  • Yes!

Also, how about Ctrl+Enter (or some other combo) sends your chat message then focuses back on the game? I navigate the game so much with WASD that I often end up typing "ddddddddddddddddd" in chat because I had just sent a message there.

  • I also want a command line. For info on users. For real estate. For monitoring projects. For buying/selling. For navigating. For selection. Basically, if you can click and do it or use the arrow keys for it, you should be able to type and do it.

  • Features from EVE Online chat which I miss, and I think would be helpful for consideration:
    - Tabbed chat panes (as Girly Girl mentioned). When tabs other than the active one have new/unread messages, they get a highlighted state .
    - Very flexible chat configuration. Of the chats I've opened, I can choose which get a shared pane (with the tabs) and which get separate panes. I can configure font size and choose from a small set of fonts for whatever gives me the best function. I can also decide how much space they get. Even if we can't change the width in the Glitch layout, being able to set the relative height would be terrific.
    - My chat window settings are persistent -- I don't have to reset them every time I log in.
    - More standard chat groups, which are easy to find, join, and leave at any time. In addition to local chat for a street, we might have regions, quarters, and the all-important Trade channel. Because everyone hates WTB spam in general chit-chat. :)

Right now I avoid participating in more than two channels, because anything more than Help + Local makes the height per chat too small for me to keep up. And I'm with tiff, the default font size is too small for my screen resolution as well. After a couple of hours I really start getting frustrated with reading chat. (And yes, I constantly have the nav problem that Herp mentions.)

EVE has great chat functionality because player interaction drives the whole gameplay experience. Since Glitch has some similarity in this goal, I think it's reasonable to hope that Glitch chat will ultimately provide a better experience than, say, WoW chat.
