User-specified bag types

I would like to have the ability to specify the type of item I want to go into a bag, similar to the ideas of the "toolbox" and "alchemical kit".

Say I'm doing a whole lot of mining, and maybe not really paying attention to how much I'm mining or where it's going, and I've got a half-dozen slots open in a half-dozen bags; now I've got 36 scattered stacks of beryl and sparkly running rampant through my bags!  Arrrrghhhh, +5 minutes spent reorganizing/looking and finding stuff.

So when I go to rename my bag, I'd like another option to appear: "Select the type of goodies you want to keep safe here" followed by such things as "Food; drinks; gems; ore chunks; powders;" &c.  Then, any item crafted or otherwise acquired would fly into the appropriate bags, if a slot were available.

Alternatively, just give us more specialized bag options at the vendors!  Though, to be honest, I think it would be sleeker in-game to have user-selectable options than a dozen more bag types at the vendor.  Less easy to code, though, I'm sure :/

  • This has been discussed before. I would love to see a "Packing Skill."
And one level it would give the ability to set bags to certain types (and now that auctions break up the times so nicely, we have something specific to draw from). At another level it gives a slightly increase to stack size to stackable items.

  • I could totally go for a packing skill!

  • +1 for the packing skill.

  • I think you could get 80% of the benefit by having some good heuristics.

For example, if I I've been mining for a rock, and that rock goes up to 50, put the next chunk of rock in the same bag.

  • Honestly, I'm waffling between absolutely loving this idea...and not sure I'd be happy if I used it...

I already have bags designated for projects, for mining, for swamp collecting, for veggies, for fruit, for cooked items...would love love love the appropriate item to go into the right bag as I am collecting/cooking, whatever....

But I have found that when I'm out roaming the world, and gathering items, I'm so relieved that they will fit into any bag when I run out of room for the bag I'm using to gather items.

If we can redesignate the bag on the fly, or if the designation is only a first line option, and then it defaults to first available slot (even if in a bag designated for something else) vice dropping on the ground, you've convinced me that this is a great idea...

  • @B3achy - I'd imagined being able to redesignate a bag as often as one might change a bag's name, so certainly doable on the fly*; same with the first-line option.  Right now, if you have a toolkit that's full, any extra tools you buy or make will go into whatever first available slot you have.

*Though this may take some careful coding work; what happens if the bag is full of food and you redesignate it for drinks?  Does stuff fall out?  Does the designation return an error: "Sorry, we can't do that"?

What if selections were check boxes instead of radio buttons, so you can have multiple designations?  That might solve that problem - the "food" check box couldn't be unchecked until there was no more food left in the bag.

  • i would be just happy if it went into the bag with the most "like" items
that way you don't have to designate anything and if the bag is full it can go in the next available slot to the left, just like it does now.
