Home Security Help

Hi All

I'm entertaining the idea of offering keys to my house.  Is there a way to ensure security besides SDB's?  My home is my hub and I often just drop stuff on the floor and head out to Ur to task away.  It seems a pain to have to store everything in an SDB.  I guess what I'm looking for is an SDB that is like a cabinet.

Time passes .... blink wait I think, yes, yes an idea.... brain capacity card +1

I think I've found one way to secure things.  Create a 'Wall Safe', mount a wall cabinet on the wall and then place a full sized cabinet in front of it.  Does that work?  I'm not sure I haven't tested it yet. Did I just talk to myself?  Unfortunately this solution is still kind of a pain in my glitch'n dairiair just to get 1 item out.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

  • i think this solution is brilliant as long as you dont tell anyone you hide your valuables behind a wardrobe....

  • I'm going to test it now.  I'll let you know how it turns out....

  • But for anyone who plays with a keyboard, they'll see both the standing and wall cabinets in a menu when they hit enter...

  • Confirmed it doesn't work, Guano Muffins!  I was hoping it would not show up in that menu.  So why did they allow us keys without security in our home?  I do trust my friends in real life but in a game they like to steal.

Anyway.... if anyone has any other ideas speak up.

    Cheers

  • I hide the door to my third floor with a cabinet, just for fun. I just have to hit enter to access it.

  • Is it possible to temporarily remove the door to an upper floor? That would be a neat solution. Simply remove the door while you are out, place it while you are in. Voila! Stuff secure on the upper floor(s).

  • Nope not possible.  You can't remove a door that has been placed.

  • I would say that answer is no. Don't ever leave stuff out if you give random people keys. The upcoming Towers will be a great solution to the home security issue.

  • isnt anything you drop on a piece of furniture locked down to visitors and keyholders?  if thats the case, you could just dump it all on a table instead of the floor...

  • I am a keyholder and noticed recently that you can't pick things up that have been left on top of furnishings, but I can open cabinets and take out bags if I wanted, not sure about floor items.  I could pick up things I had left in the house previously.

  • just store the things you dont want stolen/eaten/lost in sdbs, its a very easy solution

cabinets are not safe, nor is the floor...sdbs are perfect to store stuff

  • You have to place the items on furniture while in decorate mode to lock them down that way. You can't just drop them in normal mode. I think the type of furniture it is also factors into whether it gets locked down or not.

Sorry, but this is not guaranteed.  Items in other places, including setting on furniture, may be takable by anyone in your home. (We are working on better solutions for this in the future.)

:/ I noticed that. I can't go to my friends house and take stuff from his counters, but one of my friends can come and take things from my counter. The good thing was, the friend that took from my counter wasn't my friend, but my cousin, so I got it back easily.

  • Obviously, if someone's browser doesn't render the cabinet fast enough, they'll "see the safe and perhaps be able to interact with it.

So I'd say sdb's are still your most secure method. If you want to hide them in the same way, then do so, but at least if anything *else goes wrong, the sdb will lock all but the home owner out afaik.

  • The best solution is to only give keys to Glitchen you trust.

  • Elf - SDB's don't work for extra cubimals ( series 1 and 2 ).  I don't want an SDB for each cubimal or emblem or icon it's just too much.  Actually I don't think their is enough wall space in my fully expanded house to hold all the SDB's

We need a 'Wall Safe", a big container that could hold 5000 units of whatever. Just as if it was big pile of stuff left on the floor but stored safely in the 'Wall Safe' or 'Floor Safe'.

    Ciao

  • I think we need the ability to chose Security Settings for Cabinets, Shelves and SDBS. Where you could choose to allow Anyone, Keyholders Only or Owner Only to retrieve items.

  • I can just imagine Flash trying to render the interior of a safe with 5,000 slots. S-L-O-W-W-W-W... :)

  • Was anyone else slightly confused by forum post title and thought that this was an in game executive protection service launch thread?

  • Actually, dr kelly, I was. That's why I didn't read it until a little while ago.

And dm, WaxMan didn't say 5000 slots, he didn't mention a number of slots, but the amount of things one slot could hold. Like 4876 meat would only take up one slot, not multiple like in our current cabinets.
Posted 5 months ago by I'm Chris Subscriber! | Permalink
  • ...which is no different than an SDB, which will hold 59,880 units of meat.

Unless he's talking about a Cabinet with SDB-type slots.
Posted 5 months ago by dm Subscriber! | Permalink
  • He's talking about a cabinet with SDB-type slots, but will be completely private to the owner of it only. A cabinet that keyholders can't open.

  • @all it would be easy enough if sdbs were able to be stored in a cabinet. that way, no need to lock the cabinet, since the contents themselves would be locked via the sdbs they're inside. You could then easily make some things accessible to keyholders and others not simply based on whether they're stored in sdbs or on the shelf itself.

Granted, they'd need to be accessible while on the shelf to keep from making the whole scheme nightmarish (ie, having to drag the sdb out of the cabinet onto a wall to access its contents, which would make the concept pointless.)
Posted 5 months ago by Woochi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • That would be good.

  • Again though an SDB only holds one item type.  I'm talking about a container that holds multiple items of multiple types.  Something like our moving boxes.

  • @Webbie

I could be wrong, but it's become kinda clear to me the devs aren't considering lockable cabinets any more than lockable doors to the upstairs or lockable rooms. The suggestions and requests have been coming since at least last November when I started playing and with the exception of sdbs (I think we can all agree sdbs were a "revolutionary" improvement in storage) there hasn't been any movement whatsoever towards it and the devs have been, overall quite silent when the suggestions are posted (again...and again). The sdbs and the new towers that are coming soon appear to be TS's answer to the overall question of "home security", and I see some rational logic in the approach rather than handing out a hundred keys so people have access to one's home. Hence my suggestion regarding stowing sdbs in cabinets, as a compromise, although I'll admit that I doubt it will get much consideration, for whatever reasons. Meh. I had to at least post it anyway. Logic doesn't seem to have much sway here, but one never knows if sense will sink in.

IMO, if you're that concerned about keyholders swiping things from you, maybe they shouldn't have keys in the first place?

Personally I've given VERY few keys, and only to those I implicitly trust to respect the rules. (Not that I don't necessarily *distrust others, , just keys are for the select few with which I have regular discourse and some sort of ongoing relationship with, rather than simply "friendly acquaintances") Of course, my rules are lax with those that have keys. They may take anything not nailed down, with the caveat that they should at some point consider replacing it/them unless it's something like bulk veggies (which are an issue now because keyholders can't actually access them directly from my warehouse of sdbs for all the good and bad) . And I trust them to do so. In fact, certain players have carte blanche, since they are, as much as is possible in this venue, "intimate" friends, so if they need something, I'd like for them to have access, regardless of replacement. The sdbs are a bit of a problem in that respect, because I have a pretty solid warehouse of raw materials stored in sdbs for the obvious reason of their storage capacity, but it's not critical, since a quick note or email would be enough for me to carry over as much crap as they desire, should they want it, keyholder or simply "friend" (as long as they've at least attempted to maintain some form of relationship through posts, emails, etc.) I can think of four player off hand that I wouldn't blink in emptying an sdb for them should they have need. Acronymph, Botia, Voluptua, and elf, who have all helped me in many critical ways during my "tenure" here, and many others on my friend's list that it would not be all that much of a leap to consider it ( I barely blink even when someone I don't know asks for something and rarely if ever take anything but good will in return). But keys? I keep those tight. Maybe I'm just paranoid or it's a legacy of my PTSD...idk...and honestly I don't care.

For the record, cabinets hold N unique items, based on the capacity of the cabinet. Were those N pockets populated by sdbs they could still hold the same N unique categories, but each one could hold thousands of the unique item due to the fundamental nature of the sdb, thereby making the cabinet (if populated by sdbs) capable of virtual "lockability".

Edit: just don't take my squishy bear or my two and only cubimals from the shelf!
