Calling all Auction Huckers

Is anyone out there making a profit at auction?

Mostly I mean: is anyone selling goods above their list price?  Regularly?

Another way to put this: why don't you have a teleport set to Cebarkul instead of selling at auction?

  • It may be easier for some to reach the auction when they cannot log into the world. Some might like to continue earning a bit of money while they're away from the computer. There are probably lots of other reasons as well.

  • selling at auction isn't just about making money. if you think about it, you can actually benefit your fellow Glitch.

  • Personally, I don't have a shortage of money since I already bought my house and there aren't a lot of big ticket items I need, so I mostly sell at auction to clear my inventory. It's worth it for me to take a monetary loss but save the time/energy of teleporting.

  • I understand: "I am benefiting other Glitches" or "I don't need money, I'm just clearing inventory" or any other reason to use the Auction House.

But: is anyone making more at Auction than they would dropping goods on a vendor?

  • I have sold a couple items from time to time and made a lil bit of profit.... :)

  • Stuff from trees usually sells above list. Beans, cherries, vapour etc.

  • I sell fruit for profit.

Eggs, tools, seasoned beans, etc. nobody buys or everybody sells below vendor price, so I sell them at Cebarkul. I'd like to sell those items at the auctions, but it takes times and effort to craft them, so I'm not willing to low the price.

  • Yes, I have sold TONs of stuff for a profit.  Guano, seeds, spices, all made me more than base price.  Anything that has an amount of effort attached to it that is above and beyond simply picking it can be profitable.

  • I sell stuff at the vendors when I need a quick buck-- er, currant-- but I sell at auction when I want my goods to go to other players.  =)

  • yeah i make money on the auctions. I strategise and combine the idea of making a profit with trying to help other glitchen, eg i have some stills available on auction at the moment which I am selling for higher than you can buy at a vendor (which is where i got them), but not gouging on the price. so I make a profit, and other glitches who can't/dont' want to go find a vendor that sells them can grab one real quick. I did see someone else selling them at hugely inflated prices which I dislike.

  • profit or maximum profit? also how do you consider a profit on a non-exchangeable/non-existent currency.

is convenience factored-in? is encouraging a stronger player to player econ factored-in? i mean if you create money (selling to vendor) you inflate your gold. is that factored-in?

    too many unknown variables.

just sell your crap however you want. it doesn't matter.

  • You can usually get a good profit from fruit, and beans for people to use in their awesome stews.

Of course with the addition of these new skills, i must say i have made quite a pretty penny on the essences of rubeweed.

  • I was going to post a whole long thing about how I make money on my specific items, but decided it was silly.  Yes, convenience is a major factor.  If it takes a lot of effort, especially if that effort is tedious and un-fun for a player, they are willing to pay a substantial premium for goods on auction.  I could go out and mine for Sparkly whenever I want (I live near several deposits), but I find it easier just to buy it on auction from the miners.  Similarly, Glitchen could easily go find a batterfly and feed it a bunch of stuff to make fertilizer.  But, then they have to leave their house, go find one, feed it a bunch of stuff, come back, and THEN fertilize.  They'd rather pay a hefty premium to have the Poopsmiths Guild do that for them, and just let the frog bring them the final product.

  • I routinely have 15 to 20 auctions running, and I never sell for less than the actual value of the item.  Not just what a vendor would give me, but what the 'value' of the item is according to the encyclopedia.

  • Grain. The margin's not huge, but with AKVII you can get a full stack of bushels in about 20 minutes so it really adds up.

  • it;s not worth my time to TP to cebarkul, and it;s not my idea of fun, either.

i move a high volume of goods at auction, and if ;m not making TOP profit on everything, i simply don't care.

  • FYI, you have to sell stuff at more than 88.4% of list price to net more from the auction than you would from the tool vendors.

Personally, I will bulk buy meat as cheap energy when I'm mining, grinding etc.

  • IME, selling at auction usually gets you more than selling to vendors (since they don't give you full listed price), but I'm usually too impatient to wait for people to buy. XD I've only auctioned food and musicblocks, though.

  • Convenience will always generate a profit, especially when auction sales are delivered straight to you wherever you are, after previously having to look for some items for over a week I learned the value of occasionally selling commonplace things (AND buying them) after learning that many people as well as myself are impatient and 'rich' enough to want or need stuff NOW. The first time I temporarily and cheaply hid certain items in auctions at supposedly safe elevated prices so the bandits didn't get them when touring the ancestral homelands and found them sold afterwards I got the point on this. Give it a go - spices easily made with the spice mill can sell well at huge markups just because people want to make quest items without messing about immediately.

  • Not really answering the original question, but...

Auctions will become more important as TS phases out vendors. I don't have any inside information, but I've read stuff where they've hinted that their goal is to have the entire economy and ecosystem be run by Glitchen. I know that will scare some people, but I'm looking forward to seeing how people adapt.

  • Sometimes I don't want to burn a TP token / energy or trek to a tool vendor. Sometimes, as mentioned above, I want to try a new item without waiting a week to earn the skill and buy the tool(s) to make it myself. Sometimes I am busy at my house doing house-related chores and just need one or two things, or want to get rid of my 467th DB-1 music box and I already have all my icons so visiting a shrine to donate it doesn't appeal to me. Sometimes I have too many veggies for my cabinet to hold and don't feel like cooking, so I sell them. Sometimes I don't feel like gathering a jillion beans just to make Awesome Stews. I can't grow herbs, so if I want them, I have to buy them as waiting at a Community Garden for a real time hour or two for a free patch and then standing guard over guano-caked herbs (which someone might still snag from right under my nose with a faster click) does not sound like much fun.

Some days I have time to harvest and mine for a couple of hours and don't mind burning the energy to crush or cook or concoct stuff. Some days I just want to buy some Flummeries without harvesting a septillion cherries and buying oats and cooking them all up or buy some shrine powder without mining and crushing and transmogrifying it all myself.

To be honest, I am not really worried about "making a profit" when I sell stuff. If it sells, great. If not, not. I have also used auctions as temporary out-of-bag storage when I am away from my home region and deliberately grossly overprice stuff: this is not to deceive anyone into purchasing it at that price; it is, in fact, meant to discourage buyers so they buy from others who really WANT to sell off their stuff. If it sells at a ridiculous price anyway, great, I profit. If it doesn't, that is also great. I can wait for it to come back unsold or cancel the auction; any fees this costs me are a Magic Temporary Enormous Bag of Holding convenience charge as far as I am concerned.

Also, probably because of the all street projects, I've had a nice run a few hours ago selling stacks of bubbles at 2000c.
