NIMBY

NIMBY is an acronym for Not In My Back Yard, but really meaning anywhere near where you live or otherwise spend a lot of time. A common reaction during planing where to place prisons, dumps, homeless shelters, and a great many other 'undesirable' locations, it also applies to some desireable ones too - such as new airports or new rock concert halls (downsides can be quite severe).

What's NIMBY for one person might not be NIMBY to the next; There's people who love living next to a high school because of the convenience, and those who hate it because of the increased traffic and the greater frequencies of petty crime that often occur near high schools.

So, what's NIMBY to your Glitch? For that matter, what's your Glitch's front yard version of NIMBY? In other words, I'm asking about what 'improvements' or resources would you personally never want on your street, or in your back yard for that matter, because of whatever downsides (or lack of upsides) that it offers you and your street.

  • I don't want it to be possible for visitors to pour wine of the dead on my tower. Nuh-uh! Never!

But isn't 2/3 of Forums/General already NIMBY rants without this thread?

Oh, and hairball flower seeds should not be able to be picked up by anybody but the street owner. They are there for a reason if the street owner put them there. It says right in the title that it's their street!

For conveniences sake all Note Poles should default to Get Off My Lawn unless the street owner (they OWN the street, you know!) changes it to read something else.

Visitors shouldn't even be able to LOOK at the piggys and chickens on my street, because they might attain enjoyment from doing so and its MY street (I shouldn't have to keep repeating this)

More details shall be fortcoming if Stoot tries to build an International Airport or Nuke Plant next door, but this should be enough for now.

What are other players' ideas on this topic?

  • Things other people might like regarding their street that I don't:

    - A fully expanded yard. I like my street's cozy feel.

    - Pigs and chickens wandering free.  I think it can be pretty like that, but I like to be able to easily click on everything on my street and I like keeping them wandering around their stick as tight as they can!

    - Surly snarky gnomes.  Sometimes that can be very funny but I prefer mine to be more mild mannered :)

  • Before /home streets there was NIMBY regarding:

-pigs in Andra (and I assume Kajuu) because there are so few trees that the pigs died.
-Ix/swamp-Gas/Spice tree war. OK technically no one lived on Ix but it was def heated turf wars.

In the end the spicers won. Just try it..plant a gas or bubble Groddle Ladder, won't last a day. Though luckily the screaming on forums has gone away.

-Butterflies in Neva Neva! And all animals in the mines in general.

I'm posting non-/home kerfufles mostly b/c I dislike the trend to blame /home when really it's just the player base. When there is no designed conflict people will invent it :)

And the Rook just isn't enough. Their damage is too mild and fleeting to satisfy the desire for struggle.

  • Gosh! Yes, the intent of this topic was not to address player infighting, politics, or similar.... and now I realize that of course, NIMBY is tied to the concept of 'you dont want this, but I'm/they're going to force you or someone else to have to deal with it anyway'...

That's actually not the spirit of what I'm hoping people discuss in this thread (feel free to anyway if the spirit moves you), but what you, personally, could put in your own 'yard', but believe that you never will want to, and why you won't.

diaveborn ♥, thank you especially for your answer, which is exactly the sort of answer I was hoping to read! (though I appreciate the other types of replies too)

  • Lots of animals:  Do not want, even on poles.  A couple of free range, and that's it.

  • I don't like it when the resources are glaringly mismatched to the street style (like jellisacs in groddle meadow), or if there are too many different resource types. It makes the game look like an ugly jumble of paper cut-outs.

But on the other hand, just one thing over and over like in a resource route totally takes the fun out of it for me too.

I almost never go back to streets like that.

  • New airports, desirable? Wow.

  • Friendly-I agree. Mismatched styles don't work for me either so I will probably never put jellisacs on my street which is in the Meadow style. Also, sticks don't work for me because the animals all clump together and then it makes it tough to know which animal is which. Free range is the option for me. Also, I was not born a cat so I prefer streets without the dark spooky background in which I cannot see a d**n thing. Power plants and airports would be fine though :)

  • No bean trees, please. And no pig or chicken sticks. I love their amusing wanderings and the way they will seemingly follow my Glitchen around looking for attention. (In my backyard, yes to both, but not on my street) I would not choose the one-resource street either. I like variety and I like being on a Chaos Route. I like to have a street Glitchen can hang out on and snooze, play, reap renewable resources and pester my animals on. If my visitors have fun, I have fun.
