Why are the Groddle Meadow cottages so popular?

I mean I get that they're cute and that they're a kind of unique architecture, but so are the firebogs and there's still plenty of firebog housing left.  Same with the treehouses.  And yet the cottages always seem to be in shortage.  Why?  Is there something about Groddle Meadow I'm missing...?

  • Well I guess the Groddle area is pretty central to all the other areas in terms of travelling to your various needs. And the streetscapes are attractive too :)

  • I liked the bog houses, but the music drove me nuts when I was at home there. Groddle region colors are brightest, if you like that. More tree patches in a 15K Groddle than in a 50K home. Some outdoor space is rather nice to have, especially with a decent view (- a distant view is nice). Tree house yards can feel a bit hemmed in - your view is just nearby trees and such.

  • 1) More tree patches = more money (If it has a certain tree who's stuff can be sold to certain vendors...  with certain skills... hehe)

    2) Bog houses are good for getting your icons and emblems.

    3) The Music in bog  regions will drive you nuts just like that one guy in the Blair Witch Project.

    4) Once you live and Chakra long enough, you'll discover how much better Kalvana looks.

    5) Groddle is more active, has a bureaucratic hall. Not many herb quests, more crop and tree quests. So more tree diversity, etc.

  • They are really cute. If cottages were available in Besara I would buy one in a heart beat.

  • It's the historic center of Glitch.   I lived there for awhile and it was nice to be a block or so from Uralia and IX, but the landscape is too garish for my tastes and the houses are cramped.  I like my 50K spread in Salatu much better.  Modern, soothing, plenty of room to spread out and a block from the subway.  That was the selling point for me since I found myself riding the subway a lot anyway.

Variety is the spice of life in Glitch.

  • Trees! Not just the five patches in your house, which are nice, but there are tons more trees on the average street in Groddle than in any of the newer, more remote areas.

I mean, I live in Alakol, so I've obviously prioritized crops over trees, but I can definitely see the tradeoff. I commute to Groddle every day to pick beans. :)

  • Ah.  See, I've lived in Alakol, I had a 50k house there, and ... it just wasn't for me.  =)  The bogs just feel like home to me, and I can't imagine ever getting tired of the music there.

I lived in a treehouse in Tamila too and while nice, just wasn't for me either.

    Thanks for the replies everyone!

Edit ~ I'll probably move yet again once more video-game theme homes open up there XD but I was wondering why it was so popular compared to other places....

  • i live in a 15k GM house because it has the most features for your buck.

  • Groddle is a very convenient location, especially for new people, since it contains basic resources that are very useful at low skill levels.  It also has a bureaucroc office.  It connects easily to mining either in Uralia or the Heights, Ix for spice, and Shimla for swamp resources.  There is easy access to the subway for farther reaches.  If you are higher level, it is convenient to two community machine shops.  I've considered moving to Bortola, but it doesn't seem to have enough advantages to bother.

I really like the 5 patches of the 15 K cottages, especially with so many tree wars flaring up.  The garden is reasonable size for my needs.

The 30 and 50 K houses are too stark and even a little depressing.  Their locations are not as convenient, unless your strategy includes intensive use of the Ancestral Lands, or you have  high teleport skills.  They offer fewer tree patches, which cannot be offset by the larger gardens.  As long as the system allows floor storage, cabinet size is largely irrelevant.

I am quite "jumping impaired" (differently elastic?), so navigating the tree houses and swamp houses would be pure torture for me.  A single-level firebog house with multiple patches might be appealing for fireflies and barnacles, but I really need crop gardens, and don't do much with herbs.

  • BTW, in my opinion 5 vs 4 or 3 trees isn't a compelling difference.   For most tree types you need more than that to meet your needs, hence a spice or bean or gas run.
Posted 13 months ago by WalruZ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I like having 5 trees and it was a good price.  The convenience is also a plus.  As for the esthetics and the music, I'm pretty indifferent.
Posted 13 months ago by zoesera Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Really? The music in the bogs drives people nuts? I'd much rather hear that than the banjo-jangling I hear most other places- it's much more soothing and fits the landscape very well.

  • I have lived in Groddle Forest (treehouse), Alakol (30K), Kalvana (Bog house with fireflies) and am now in Bortola (Fruit Cottage with 5 trees).I love GF but the animals did not have enough room and made me nuts.  Alakol was probably the most comfortable, with plenty of room but was a bit sterile in appearance.  Kalavana was attractive and had good features but no vegetable garden and no Egg plant either :( (I love the Bog music!).  Bortola has 5 trees and enough veggie patches but the house could be roomier and a litttle less fruity.  The Bortola cottage is straight from the GM where I always wanted to live because of the beauty and central location.

I would like a little more room in the cottage and I am desperate for an animal pen.  I don't expect to move again until I discover how we will be able to "renovate" or "improve" our homes.  If I could do a little painting (tone down the fruit) and add an animal pen, my home would be ideal!

  • They are so popular because they are by far the best. *prepares to duck*

I was working hard to make money to buy a house. I'd gone through the Glitch Strategy guide to try to figure out what I wanted. I had been to the model home in Alkol but had not been in any other type of house. I wanted the largest house I could get, but the 30K and 50K are horrilbe. They look like Scandanavian Prisons. I figured the 15K GM cottage would be the best option. As soon as I saw one, I grabbed it.

I thought I would like having a pen for the animals, but I think it's acutally better without. My pigs were able to eat from my trees. The cottages are bright and roomy enough. The yard is plenty big enough for running and jumping with joy. I thought I might find the 16 garden plots disappointing as the 30K and 50K have more, but I discovered cropping was tedious enough than 16 is plenty :) The 5 tree plots was probably the deciding factor. I know someone said that doesn't matter, but I grab 12 of a product with each harvest, so 24 per tree per day plus super harvests. I gather when I'm out in the world too, but my trees usually are enough for me to take care of my daily food and drink needs.

There is also location, too. GM is central to many things. I was lucky enough that my place is one street away from the subway (I bought it without knowing where the street was, as I knew it wouldn't last long in the listings). The area is lively and there are many resources, such as trees, pigs, chickens, and butterflies to draw upon. I can get to the spice and the mines easily. I also like that I can find newbs running around in the area so I can give them things and mentor them.

  • If there was a 50K mansion in Groddle, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I just love the landscape and the atmosphere of Groddle as a whole and Groddle meadow/Forest even more.

While my house in Salatu is nice, it just does not have the resources (especially trees) in the region to sustain.

  • They're literally in the center of Ur. It has quick access to *everything* (shimla mirch south, ix west, mining in gh or ilmenskie, eggs in ne of map) except the ancestral lands, which is just a couple of subway stops away anyway. I bought a cave in GH in preparation for the last egg quest, and I decided early on to keep a lot of pigs and rely on collectors so I bought the 50k home next just for the space. And yes, loads of animals in the Groddle area. I left loads of pigs in the streets around my home in Alakol yesterday, and today they're gone (I blame the return of auctioning hog tied pigs). I sincerely hope the devs decide on letting us enlarge our homes ala Harvest Moon. More use for planks and blocks and stuff :D

  • I got one of the 50k houses and while I like the huge spaces and the sea view (I'd love a beach house) I would buy a 15k cottage in a heart beat. I have had my eye on the ones with the artsy feeling (painting, sculpture) forever. I had one before reset and I loved it. Five trees is wonderful and imo having the pen is horrible. Perhaps if it was less narrow and you could actually see what you were stepping on, it might be more useful. The only thing it does is make sure my piggies die if I am too busy to get in-game (just had to make a new batch of piggies so yeah i am grumbling).

Regarding the landscape I am sure I saw 15k cottages in one of the Savanah regions but while at the time there was an artsy cottage available I couldn't live in such a bleached landscape. The colour scheme looks all faded to me (i understand that's how it should look through the heat haze but it's just not for me).

In short, nice views, open spaces, more trees, best decor. Win/ win :)

  • I just like how my house looks. I got that gothic style. I also wanted the crop garden for my awesome stews. I just got a 10k house, because that style opened and I really wanted it. I wanted to save for a 15k house, but there's really no point for me. I would really like a dark patch or two for eggplant trees, but eh, I'm too lazy to move and stalk the reality page. Also, between transportation and the subway, I can go harvest on the streets and have everything I need and stuff it in all of my big bags.
