Rube not living up to his name!

So....I only got 5 chances to accept a trade with Rube, but all of his offers were crap.
Why would I want to give up my gassifier for a milker when I don't know Animal Husbandry?
And I don't want food for one of my tools.
And that ending statement? Kind of dick.
C'mon, Rube used to be such a treat. Now he's just an asshole.

Why was this changed, devs? U angry? We do something?

  • I think it's ultimately good that the rube isn't a random event to give you 3000-3500 currants for free. ...Despite the fact that a few occasions of that paid for quite a chunk of my house.

It's just not good game design, the new rube is more interesting, just not guaranteed to be helpful.

  • How is having a cool surprise every once in awhile "not good game design"?
Posted 15 months ago by serfer0 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm not sure whether it's good or bad... if you knew you had exactly 10 offers or something like that?
Posted 15 months ago by xLIFEx Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Because giving everyone $3500 at random vastly devalues a lot of other interesting decisions in earning money.

I mean, we're already at the point that once you've bought the $50000 house, what left is there to do with your currants?

  • Work on streets, earn skills, there is an endless amount to do with your money. I don't get why people act like houses is all there is to buy. xP

  • Actually, yeah, I find that it's expensive to work on the streets.
When I really get into a project and make an effort to be in the top 5 I find I've spent about 40K when it's over.

  • the Old Rube was broken, the New Rube sounds broken.

i'm guessing the solution is to never have the Rube offer anything below 500 or above 1000 currants and never ask for anything above 100.

.. and to only offer 5 to 10 trades, with a warning that his last offer is his last offer.

but asking for tools in exchange for food, or tool swaps of nearly equal value just isn't Rube-ish at all.

  • True, that's definitely one place to put in a lot of currants (or resources that could be sold for lots of money).

I dunno, I just feel like the old rube was a bit too random and unambiguously awesome. And his trades were always no-brainers, you pick the cubimal box, cause you can always sell it and buy 10 of any of the other items he gives.

  • I just ignore the rube now. Not worth my time.

  • I've never had issues with the Rube, and I see him 2 or 3 times almost every time I play. I've gotten pretty good stuff from him in the past week or so (Rube Cubimal for a regular Pick, Focusing Orb for a cherry, etc), and I've never had him decide I'm wasting his time and disappear before I was done. I guess I just don't have the same problems with him that others seem to.
I don't think limiting what he'll trade is all that useful though, and I guess I don't get why making out like a bandit every now and again is a bad thing. It's a bit of serendipity when it happens- I'm not completely funding my Glitch existence with Rube trades, but sometimes I get a nice bump. Besides, currants are far from everything.

  • The extent of the changes aren't known, but from my recent experiences he's been changed to offer a maximum of 5 trades (Clearly shown when talking to you) and to in general have less good trades (Hard to tell? I think he just flat-out doesn't offer cubimal boxes).

I like the 5 trades thing... particularly when you get a good one on #3 and have to decide whether to take it or roll the dice 2 more times and hope to get better!

  • Rube helped me out a lot as a newcomer.

i was really happy when he trades my hoe for his focusing orb when i first interacted with him. because i might have spent 1200 on a vendor for the orb before buying a house... without knowing that meditation return is... marginal without a few mediation skills learnt.

  • Old rube was ridiculously stupid. New rube is probably another over-nerf. Ive only gotten him once today, but all five offers were really boring, like meat for egg boring. A good balance would be the rube offering a basic tool for a juicy item. Shoudnt be the same things all the time either. That's the ballpark. A little boring to beta testers, but makes a newbie's day.m

  • @Abby Smalls: I dunno about no Cubimal boxes... I've gotten one from him already, and he's offered them to me since.
Posted 15 months ago by Djabriil Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Really? That's not bad then if it's really rare, makes him a little more exciting. How recently was it?
Posted 15 months ago by Abby Smalls Subscriber! | Permalink
  • So when did these "changes" to the Rube's behavior happen? I got a cubimal box just last night while playing. I traded a focusing orb for the cubimal box and it was totally worth it!
Posted 15 months ago by Mogen Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Abby Smalls:I got the Cubimal (a relatively rare one compared to a chick) two or three days ago... and since then he's offered me Cubimal trades two more times, I think.
Posted 15 months ago by Djabriil Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Cubimal boxes are still offered (though not every time) AND the minimum value of the thing the Rube offers is still at 2x the thing he is asking for, as it always was.The limited number of offers means you can't just hit "next" over and over until you get the cubimal. And, as Abby Smalls pointed out above, it makes things more interesting when you know you have a limited number of offers available because you have to decide whether to take a good one when it comes up, or keep trying with the rest that the rest are worse.

  • LOL..Well I just ran into him and he took off leaving me wide eyed and gobsmacked..because before today  ..I always got great trades with him and I hadn't read this post..LOL...But I thought it was hilarious and good on Rube for calling my bluff for once..keep me on my toes for next time LOL :D x

  • I just encountered the new Rube, and I do think 10 offers may be a little better than 5. I had him offer the same trade 3 of those 5 times (for something that I didn't want to part with), and wasn't fussed with the other two offers he made. It does make sense for him to only carry a limited number of items with him.
Posted 15 months ago by Serilyn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Agreed, the Rube is now a bit of a dick :-)

I support the limited number of offers - I think that's good... no point having an infinite number of attempts.

But I've seen him 3 or 4 times since he changed and every time I've run through all the options and walked away empty-handed. Prior to the change I think I only once ever even clicked to see his second offer. The quality of the trades definitely seems to have deteriorated and, whilst I doubt I'll totally ignore him in the future, he's not the exciting event he used to be.

    Poor old Rube.

  • I just traded a scraper for a 12-sided die and made a quick 330 currants.  Can't complain.

  • Don't give up folks! He visited me today and I was able to trade an Chili for a Super Scraper on the 3rd offering. Sure, next time I may get a Gurly Drink for a milk, but it is still fun to run into him because you just never know...........

  • "Cubimal boxes are still offered (though not every time) AND the minimum value of the thing the Rube offers is still at 2x the thing he is asking for, as it always was."

2x of very little, like trading a spinach for a sparkly, just isn't fun.

combined with the limited trade offers, which are a good idea, the trades become problematic.

it sets up the possibility for the rube to be very disappointing, when before it was like glitchmas morning whenever a player saw the rube was for them.

it would be more fun for the player if the rube appeared for them 2x less often, but with 2x better returns.

that would leave absolutely no change in game balance, but leave the rube's beloved-ly benevolent stature intact.
Posted 15 months ago by striatic Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The minimum was ALWAYS 2x. That has not changed. It is just that cubimals are not offered every time now.
Posted 15 months ago by stoot barfield Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I no longer get excited thinking that I might get to see the Rube out and about.
And I no longer care if I DO see the Rube, he's become boring and "un" fun.

A potato for one of my garden seeds? Really!?! I could buy, at least, 2 potatoes for the price of the cheapest garden seed!!

Sorry, Rube, but the thrill is gone :(
Posted 15 months ago by sgjo Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @ stoot...well then my rube had it backwards...he offered me a potato for one of my garden seeds!!
Posted 15 months ago by sgjo Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Agree with striatic, sgjo and others. It's better to have a limited number of offers (I thought this was always the case). But there should be at least a fairly good one among them.
Posted 15 months ago by Ximenez Subscriber! | Permalink
  • sgjo, if you got that offer, then there's a bug: we'll look into it! (If so, that's perhaps why people are complaining about the quality of the trades?)
Posted 15 months ago by stoot barfield Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @ stoot...yep, could be why the complaints.
I know there were more instances with basically the same type of offer (I've seen him several times after he got reworked, but that's the one that stuck in my mind because of the garden seed being something that I buy a lot of).

  • I haven't been getting the great offers from the rube I used to get but I don't mind.  He forces me to learn the value of obscure items like feeders and milkers.   Last trade I got another orb for my emotional bear.   BTW, didn't orbs used to cost 999c from the vendor?  I noticed the price went up a couple hundred c.

When he was offering cubimals in exchange for shovels he was really responding to my sense of greed.   After I got a cubimal from him every other offer was a disappointment.
Posted 14 months ago by Treesa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think orbs are 999c from the right vendor. If you buy it for more, you're buying it at the wrong one. But this may have changed. I know I only spent 999c late last week.
