Garden Gnome = House Key

I've read a couple of suggestions on house keys, and have to say I think it would be a great addition to be able to give other players access to your house. (imagine for holidays, but also in an economic way: Become a gardener for example).

I've read Tiny Speck is going to develop a 'house key' system. But don't want it to interfere or cause confusion with the existing keys. I'm totally with you! Therefore I came
up with an alternative system:

Wouldn't is be awesome if the 'grant access' functionality would work through Garden Gnomes? They have zero functionality at the moment, and I think it would be an easy way to grant friends access to my place. i just tell my Gnome which player is allowed in, and my Gnome will grant him access. Otherwhise the door stays locked.

What I like about this system:
1. Gnomes get functionality.
2. Revoking access is easy and fully controlled: Just tell your Gnome! No hassle asking keys back etc.
3. No interference with the other key system.
4. No need to implement weird restrictions or side-rules, like: House keys can't be auctioned, or passed through. This would only bring confusion.

I know you're already working on a house key system, but wanted to drop this idea anyway :)

  • I think this is a good idea, except you'd have to add:
When a gnome is passed to another player, all the original functionality is wiped and needs to be re-imprinted (to avoid people using gnome 'gifts' to sneak into someone else's house.)

  • The Gnome would have to become a player-owned object which would then sit in front of your house and not move.  otherwise, i like it, especially if they have voices and say "can I help you?" when you ask for entry.  etc.

  • But I don't want a gnome, nor do I want to see them in front of even more houses.  Not a fan of the gnome, what can I say?

  • Cross, what about a flower pot?  Everyone knows that the key is hidden under the flowerpot by the front door.  LOL

I really like this idea but like Cross, maybe an option of one of three different items could be used - top three voted upon by subscribers. (wonders when I'll ever get to use these votes)

  • What if you got a basic "doorman" (the gnome) but could purchase different doorman appearances with currants?  Or credits, even?

  • @Cross @MzFroggie:

Flowerpots would be nice too ;) I can understand that a gnome in front of EVERY house could be a little bit annoying. Multiple items could be a bit confusing though.

  • I like the flowerpot idea! Maybe it could double as an herb growing spot!

  • Also like the flowerpot idea. It might be easier just to code the functionality into home or door behavior, though. You set access for certain folks, are able to invoke or revoke it, and it is wiped when the home is sold to someone else.

Since shared homes seem to be rumored to be in the works, maybe this is something they are thinking about already.

  • +1 to the flowerpot!

  • Another + for this idea is that I wouldn't want to be carrying around more keys or have to retain a list of peoples houses I might have access to.
Start every house out with just the flowerpot but have other items available either for sale, quest or craft.

    Maybe statues of the giants???
