Entering Homes

Do you have to be there to let someone in?  Can someone you let in once get in if you are offline?  Or what if days later you are playing in game away from your house, can that person just go in?
I ask because today I went into my house and i swear I'm missing a whole bag of stuff.  I tried reloading but its still not there.
If someone did steal from me, how do I "disallow" people to come in?  I have no idea who might have done it, Im hoping its just a bug?

  • You have to be online to let someone in.  No one can get in if you are offline.  Once a person is out of your house they cannot get back in without your once again giving them permission to enter.

EDIT:  As Miss Giggles has pointed out, they once you have let someone in, they can get back into your house as long as you stay online -- whether you are in the house or not.  Once you have gone offline or kicked them out, they can no longer get back in.

Make a bug report for your missing bag.

EDIT:  I was fixing my error as you were posting Adroix.  I posted the first reply, but oscarette posted the first reply that was accurate.

  • You have to knock each time you visit someone's house, and letting someone in is one-time-only (or per other posters, perhaps one-day-only? Definitely not forever!).  You don't have to be home to let a guest in (but they can take everything on the floor, so be careful.)  If you are offline nobody can go in your house, and if you are in your house with a friend and you go offline, they will find themselves outside the door.

EDIT: beaten by Splendora!  Indeed, file a bug report if you're sure a bag has vanished.

    You mean offline.

  • Ok good!  I am careful who I let it and I know the bag was there last night after I logged off, so I was confused.  Thanks!

  • Actually, I think that once you let someone in, they may come and go as they please* until you exit the world (unless you boot them).

*Unless the devs have changed this in the last few days, because I was popping in and out of my sister's house (I had to knock the first time, but not subsequently) within the last week.

  • How do you boot someone? I doubt that I will have this issue, as I am picky about who I let into my Ur home, just as I am picky about who I let into my "real life" home, but it doesn't seem to be an intuitive thing. Do you have to click on the person's avatar or what?

On a related note, I have learned that it is possible to accidentally knock on someone's door while trying to corner butterflies on a residential street with a laggy connection. I didn't really want to be let in. If the person had been home and let me in, how could I decline the invitation I didn't really even want? By just not going in?

Also, when I was an apartment owner, I got a LOT of knocks on my door (from non-neighbors) which I declined. I'd hate to think that there were a lot of Glitchen randomly knocking multiple times on each and every door in a housing block, hoping to be let in to use the resources or pick up dropped stuff, but I can't think of a better explanation, given that there were no animals loose on that floor of the apartment building. Be careful what you click "OK" on.

  • I've never done it (I've only let in four people EVAR), but I imagine it's another option that appears when you click someone's avatar or name in chat (but only when you're in your own home).

  • I've heard it said that, once you've been let in, you have free access for the rest of the "day" (Ur day? Real day? Not sure). Could someone confirm/deny this? I guess I should grab a fiend... err sorry... friend and find out :-) And if so, what happena if you've been granted access and the home owner is offline?

And yeah, I've had several random knocks on the door from strangers - maybe they're innocent or maybe they're not... I suspect the payback rate is low, but they probably knock on a *lot* of doors :-(

  • [redacted, as my info was wrong]

UPDATE: What Miss Giggles says below is correct.

You do need to be cautious about who you let in your house. This discourages social activities such as house tours, house parties, inviting in players who need to harvest a wood tree, etc.

  • I have definitely knocked on doors attempting to catch butterflies.  I was mortified and worried my neighbors would think I was attempting to burgle them; now I only use powder on residential streets, so as not to scare folks in their homes.

  • You don't have to be in the house for someone to be able to keep coming and going for a session after you've given them permission.

The session lasts as long as you are online or until you actually click on them or their name and select "kick/boot from house" (a new option appears when they're in your house or have had permission for it; it is not the block option).

Once you are offline, the people are put outside your house, and when you come online again, they must knock to gain permission again.

ETA: Though I don't think temporary disconnects/refreshes seem to count.
