Could some kind glitch please help me understand "unlearning"?

I have the "unlearn" upgrade but I'm a bit hesitant to use it because I am not clear on its implications and affect on the skills chain so if someone could help clarify some things for me I would be grateful.

For example I have Animal Kinship 1 through to 4 learned. I also have Fox brushing learned. Fox Brushing needs Animal Kinship 2, which in turn needs Animal Kinship 1. For the sake of this example lets pretend that fox brushing can only be done if you have that skill learned.

If I unlearn Animal Kinship 1 how would that impact on Animal Kinship 2 and in turn Fox Brushing?

Do earlier skills become redundant once you step up to the next one or does their removal cause a domino effect?

If anyone could set me straight or point me somewhere that clarifies this I would be very happy.

Thanks in advance

  • You need to unlearn the higher level skills before you can unlearn the lower ones, so AK4, AK3 and AK2 before you can unlearn AK1.

  • Oh...well that doesn't make that upgrade very useful then because the highe rones are all needed for something else to progress in the game. Guess Im stuck saving up img and waiting for brain upgrades then because I cant really see anything I can unlearn that isnt a part of something else Im working towards

    Thanks for the reply

  • Actually, none of the skills are required to progress, per se. The unlearning skill is there if you realize maybe you don't want a specific skill, but want to learn a new one quicker. Also, new skills will be added as the game progresses

  • There are some low level skills which nothing higher depends on (yet).

  • Thanks for the replies.

I will have a harder look at my learned skills but i dont think theres many that I can remove without it making progress on something else come to a halt so at this stage I think Ill just learn patience and keep plugging away.

    thanks again for the help

  • Personally, I never saw any need for it and never used it.  I bought the upgrade cards for it just to get them out of my deck when I wanted the better cards.

Eventually, you'll have all the skills anyway and the penalty is going to be just as bad... the only thing I can really suggest is to learn the skills with the higher learning times while you have a lower penalty - assuming that's possible. :)

  • If you unlearn something you will get a Badge for Unlearning - Lol!  Many of us unlearned the first skill in a tree to get the Badge then relearned it.

  • Oh i didnt realise there was a badge. I might unlearn one of the ones Ive only just started then for the sake of that before I get in too deep into the learning tree

And thanks again for the tips and advice. Im taking it all on board

  • Brib Annie, can people still get that badge? It was actually for unlearning Unlearning when it was a skill. Now Unlearning is an upgrade.

eta: Just looked it up in TomC's thread. Confounder of Logic is no longer obtainable.

  • When  I was working on learning all the skills, I unlearned things like fruit changing, bubble tuning, etc.  You can still do them if you unlearn them, they will just occasionally fail.  Then I had five fewer skills in my brain, clogging it up.  Once I learned all the other skills, I relearned them.

  • Yeah,  some of the newer skills took a very long time to learn,  so unlearning can be helpful  in shaving days, weeks, MONTHS off.

For example, if might take you an hour to unlearn the likes of fruit-changing, but doing so could take off considerably more than that of the skills you want to learn.  So it can be worth doing that before starting a new skill that takes ages. (you can still transform fruit/spice/gas/bubbles without the skills)

I  unlearnt some of the cooking skills which helped take a lot of time off the new skills too  - but maybe I should pick some of them up again if cooking's about to get some lovin' from the devs.

  • I had forgotten that the Badge was for Unlearning Unlearning!  Sorry about the error!  I don't know if you can get a Badge for Unlearning something else but you should!
