Teleportation

Something I realised recently was that the Teleportation skills in this game really took away a lot of the atmosphere and adventure in the game, for me.

When a smaller level, I thought it was quite entertaining with such a large world with so many streets, to have to trek to get supplies. Felt like an achievement. Also actually walking to a friend's place and visiting them in a different area with different music and different landscape, taking the trek to get there felt somewhat rewarding, and I appreciated it when someone visited me from afar.

I'd suggest the vast majority of people nowadays teleport to a harvest spot, or just take the current home street route and grind supplies. It's also easy now to change a name on your home street and instantly warp to a friend's place.

I liked when the world was an adventure. I liked when trekking to the swamps was an effort, or the mines, or the ancient savannah wastelands. I remember when first playing this game, and feeling like the world was huge and there was an adventure in every corner. I heard the subway isn't long for the world... shame, the subway is atmospheric and was perfect for travel.

Someone starting the game anew today, really can just never leave home streets and still flourish. Fix up your dolly house by grinding resources on home streets... I dunno.

Yes teleportation is great and convenient and yes, you can still walk places if you so choose, I realise this, but it's antiquated with teleportation. Even with the new and old teleportation restrictions, it's still lost it's adventure. I just feel if I started playing the game today, it wouldn't have the same atmosphere.

Tl; dr,

Teleportation feels like the game has cheated itself out of some of it's best qualities.

  • You should probably unlearn it then.

I don't get what you mean by "if i started the game today".  You don't start the game with Teleportation,  you have to learn it, can only do so after a while and it's expensive/limited until you're at a high skill level.  Nooblets still need to walk everywhere.

  • While I appreciate the sentiments of your post, I think most players would grow tired of the time it took to walk all those distances. When you're new in the game it's all fresh and exciting. You want to grab quoins, pet piggies and harvest trees as you wander around and discover Ur. However, as you advance you acquire specific interests and need certain resources NOW! Your time in game is limited by reality and there's a lot you want to get done. If you had to spend most of your time just walking through familiar territory to get to where you needed to be, it would really grow old. Personally I compromise. I teleport a lot, but I try to plan my activity so there are several things I want to do within a reasonable walking distance. I spend a lot of time in Uralia, Groddle Forest and iX, as they are closely connected and have most of the things I need to get out into the world for.

  • Teleportation is limited. You have to learn it to use it, and even then, you have a finite number of TPs you can use per game day.

I would think, if anything, that home streets and home street connections would be of greater concern, since there is no limit or energy loss to jump from point to point.

  • I think that's why they changed it so you can no longer teleport to places you haven't been to before. New players will still have to explore the world on foot or by subway. You'll still need to explore the world physically for DNA too.

I hope they keep the subway though...

  • Is there a suggestion lurking in the OP? I agree with shhexy that you should consider unlearning the skill (or not using it).

  • I like how Teleportation makes it dead easy for me to go for nice walks in completely different places.

  • If I have to get from one end of Ur to the other, I either TP or take a train, I just don't have much time in the day to go around and explore anymore, and like Hawkwell said, new players like to go out and explore stuff, etc.

To contradict myself: now that you can't TP to a new location, it basically forces you to walk a little ways, and I kind of like that sometimes, so all is not lost!

  • I'm thinking the OP is similar to me in a way...but I'm just guessing.  For some strange reason, I tend (in RL) to set limits and rules for myself that don't actually apply for any reason other than I set them, so they exist.

I never really noticed this until a professor pointed it out.  "Why?  What rule is that?  Did you just make that up for yourself??"  Oh, um, yeah, I did.  I totally made up a rule and then made myself stick to it...for no reason.

    Yeah, I'm odd.

So, I see the idea, the need to set limitations or guidelines on how to play.  I also see that there are ways around those rules!  Unlearn, give yourself a once-a-day maximum on TP, only use a script once a week...stuff like that.

Funny, we are moving from a beautiful area in the rockies to a totally different area/state/region.  We have less than a month left here.  As avid hikers (like, 10 to 30 miles in one shot), we are having trouble fitting in all the hikes possible in what little time remains.  We kept telling ourselves "We HAVE to do these specific favourites at least once more each before we go" which leaves little room for the gazillion trails we've never been on before.  Yesterday, my guy said "we don't HAVE to do them, I'm enjoying the new trails we've been taking and the not-knowing each has brought."  Hmmm, so it is agreed, after a short discussion, we can do anything we want, old, new, change our minds at the last minute...whatever we want!!

I'm just pointing that out because I think we (me, you, anyone?) can easily set limitations on ourselves that don't have to apply, to anything or anyone.  We can think that we are limited to travel by TP because that is what we've become acustom to.  We can tell ourselves that the game is different because an old form of travel will be gone, soon.  Well, yes, when the subway goes (no idea if that is really happening or not), that form of travel will be gone.  But, we CAN do anything we want!!  We can refuse to TP, we can change our minds and TP thirty times in one day if we please, we can even make TP scripts for new players who have the ability to use a script but maybe can't make one or isn't aware of how to make one?

I dunno, we can do anything we want, including TP everywhere and TP nowhere.

    Just a thought.

  • Fail post! Stupid iphone.

I guess I see the points made, unlearning teleportation won't bring back the adventure though, it's not the point, and I'm lazy.

The fact you can now instaport to (awesome) supply routes on home streets just takes a lot of the experience away for mine..

  • I hear what you saying, Rosty and I think Minkey's comments are spot on too. As for me, I really appreciate the options the game gives me. Yes, for the most part I teleport to various points in UR but then I enjoy walking around the region I land in. Sometimes I will randomly pick a region I haven't visited in awhile just for the heck of it----and I always find something I hadn't noticed before---and get Quawzy Quoins (a good motivator for visiting streets I haven't been to for a long time).

  • i walk nearly every where i go.

if you don't like teleportation, don't teleport.

it's like badge grinders complaining about how much boring stuff they have to do to get their badges.

protip: if you do your activities in the game, sooner or later your ticker will click over and at some unexpected point in the future you will get a badge. you don't have to grind. ever.
