Evading "Hi"s

I am very confused by my experiences in Hi's evasion so far. To wit: I've avoided quite easily them on my first day, reaching times of about 80 seconds. Then, all of a sudden, I can't even get to 20 seconds anymore!

What I am seeing is a sudden sprint (i.e. they fly at speed "1" for a while, then they warp to speed "10" and hit me) that wasn't there before, but I'm wondering whether it's some latency effect from my connection or other technical problems here.

Also, since we're here anyway, I'd love to hear what your avoidance tactic is...

  • Glitch Change Log ‏@glitchlog There are four new achievements for hi sign evasion, added here: http://www.glitch.com/achievements/social/ …• Now, be social: when someone says hi … run away fast!

Right around this time They announced in the Change Log (not sure where it is now) that they had increased the speed to make it faster. Then they added the above achievements a few days later.

  • From my own experience, it seems lag helps me to avoid the signs.  Also, I've experienced the sudden sprint too, when I received my first badge for it, they seemed to speed up.  It reset when a new game day came, and I made sure I had a bit of lag when I did it again.

  • +1 Ari's above comment.  A little bit of lag seems to discourage the sudden warp speed that can occur around the 5-10 second window.  Somehow I was able to avoid 2 signs for over 5 minutes last night, whereas otherwise, I'd only been able to get to 7 sec!

  • Do you have to stay in a single location while avoiding them, or can you avoid them by moving to a new street? It seemed the one time I changed streets the "hi" stopped following me.

  • It only counts if you stay in the same location.

  • Why do you avoid 'Hi's' ?, sorry if it's a silly question, but I'm new to the game. I thought saying Hi was a good thing??

  • Welcome Allitch :) You try to evade a hi so that you can get the badges for evading them - there are several. The hi will catch up to you eventually and it is fun to run and jump up and down a street trying to keep ahead of it. Don't evade them by changing streets though :(

  • One day I had the weird warp-speed hi's, and it was impossible to get more than about 9 seconds and I was really getting frustrated.  I could be a full screen ahead of them, then suddenly they just flashed into me.

But then I tried it again on another day, and they no longer did that and just moved normally.  So yeah, Ayzad, if they are warping like that, you will not be able to get the badges.  Just try again later and hope they move normally, then the badges are quite easy.

  • If you're experiencing ANY difficulty in rendering the game and you are using chrome, stop what you're doing and check to make sure you don't have multiple flash instances running in chrome.  The negative effect of that is significant.  There's a thread about it in the bugs forum, but basically what you do is to open a tab and type in chrome://plugins,  then on the resulting page look at the flash entries.  If you see multiples, and some have a path that is part of the chrome installation tree, disable those and leave any entry that is not part of chrome.  if they are all chrome, then disable all but one.
