  • Poll:

Thousands of Glitch testers don't respond, leaving us with meaningless results and no demographics.

Unless you're simply interested in collecting personal data about forum users.  If that's all you want, then here are some previous results:

  • That answers a lot about the ages. As far as whether or not this is truly representative of the population.. Few polls ever are, but they still provide insight. A census would be more accurate. I was curious because if the attitudes and ideas I saw coming off the idea forum. There aren't many games I've played where older players suggested to a noob that they create a spreadsheet in order to figure the game out. I've dine this at advanced levels on other games, but never has it ever been suggested to me at a beginner level, like here. As well, people's offhand comments about what they do for a living, before they state an idea. The fact my first responder has a Phd has only fueled my thought that many here are above average

  • Hi SourGrapes, I did not suggest that you create a spreadsheet in Ideas.  I suggested that there are spreadsheets that other players have made that you could check out, but that it would be challenging to have all that info in-game because energy costs vary by skill level.

I do take issue with what someone does for a living being an indicator of whether they are average, sub-average, or above average, though.  We've already had age discussions on the forum with some not respecting younger players ("I don't want to play with kids" sort of stuff). That rubs me the wrong way, too, because - in the end - it's what they say/do online that matters, nothing more.  I like the internet for the WYSIWYG factor.

In no particular order, what I have done for a living is....
    - "technical support service engineer" for a giant purple monolith
    - research assistant in a PhD political philosophy program
    - bouncer for a lesbian sex club
    - recording engineer/roadie
    - gardener
    - ship-to-shore satellite communications hack
    - produce truck driver
    - McDonald's shift manager
    - IT consultant for legal firms, non-profits, and small businesses
    - warehouse forklift operator
    - security analyst
    - technical writer
    - IATSE stagehand

Does this make me blue collar, white collar, or above or below average?  Or just easily bored? ;-)

I'm 40-sumthin, a Coloradoan who loves the SFGiants, used to play online RPGs and heard about Glitch over 18 months ago from some co-workers who started migrating to TinySpeck...

  • [esoteric educational comment about polls, statistics, and conclusions]

As far as whether or not this is truly representative of the population.. Few polls ever are, but they still provide insight.

The reason that some polls can be used to provide insight is that the people who respond are selected to provide a representative sample.  If the only responses you get are from a self-selected group, you have two serious problems with your "insight":

    a) there is no way to say how the 'insight' applies to the larger whole.  There is nothing that tells you the relationship between the responders and the population being 'sampled'.  You can't draw any conclusions from what you're told because you don't know how it relates to the feelings/opinions/demographics of the population whose opinion you're trying to represent.

    b) there is no way to say how the 'insight' applies to the smaller sample.  There is nothing that tells you the demographics of the sample.  So, for example, if you have a poll that is 100% against gay marriage, you have no way of knowing whether your whole sample is elderly heterosexual females.  All you can say is "these 5 (10, 100) people think xxx".

Threads like this are fun because it's fascinating to see how much personal information people will reveal over the internet.  From the various threads, I've been able to put together pretty serious amounts of profile information about individual testers.  Information that could be used to guess their passwords, find out their home address, etc.

But the threads didn't reveal anything at all about the Glitch player base as a whole.

  • 1. BA
    2. Co-manager of family run Holiday Complex
    3. 35
    4. I live in Devon, South West England. I was born in Surrey, South East England.
    5. I've lost count of the games I've played in the last 10 years. I think I signed up and played pretty much every Virtual Pet Site that existed when I first started playing online lol
Then I've played most of the Zynga games, from Mafia Wars to CityVille on FB, until I decided to boycott everything Zynga, thanks to their most unhelpful Customer Support people.
The only ones I play now, other than Glitch (when it's open) are a couple of fb games - Monster Galaxy and Happy Aquarium.
    6. I heard about Glitch when Faunasphere was dying.  Soon after that, my partner signed up for this place on my behalf, as I was having medical problems at the time, couldn't move my hands to type, and was in and out of hospital. I couldn't deal with internet stuff. It was my partners e-mail addy and not connected to FB.
We waited, and waited and waited and nothing. Months went by. Kept on requesting and it kept telling us to wait and... nothing.
Eventually I got out of hospital and could just about use my hands again, so I signed up myself using my e-mail and I connected my FB.  The next day, thanks to the lovely Kakul, I had me an invite.
I had to invite my partner once I got in, or we'd probably still be waiting lol  No love for the non-fb connected user I guess.

    *edit*
BTW, if anyone is using this to find out personal info on me, and they do find my address, feel free to stop by some time :)
We usually have up to 34 strangers staying in the holiday cottages, so what's a few more?  Just call me first and give me some notice. I could bake a cake.  You'll have to decorate it though, unless you like cakes that look like a four year old's decorated them. I can just about manage frosting, but that's it for fancyness.

    1) Currently studying a Bachelors of Health Sciences then applying to a Masters of Health Sciences in Cardiac Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound.
    2) I'm a nanny for some adorable twin baby boys
    3) 23 (but I lie and tell everyone I'm 21...please don't ruin it for me by telling everyone my real age!)
    4) I am from Missouri, and still live in Missouri but I LOVE to travel and have seen most of the world already!
    5) I played World of Warcraft for a little bit, other than that just played N64 (I kick so much ass at Mario Kart and Super Mario 64 so watch out)
    6) I heard about Glitch a long time ago from my boyfriend, so long ago that I don't even remember how long it was.  I've played Glitch for about a month now, just participated in my fourth test.  I waited a LONG time for an invite, but once I added Glitch on Facebook I got an invite right away!

@Windborn: Feel free to try to guess my address or passwords.  I'm in college, in Missouri, in fact the only college in all of America that offers a Masters program in Ultrasound.  You should have no problem figuring out what school I go to...but my address?  I live in a college town where 90% of the housing is for students, and I move multiple times each year, so good luck.  None of the information here could help you find me.  Also my passwords?  Theres no way in hell anyone could ever guess them.  My boyfriend of 6 years knows EVERYTHING about me, he has no idea what my passwords are.  But you can try if you want!

There is really nothing here that would be dangerous to display online.  You all don't really even know what I look like, so I'm not too worried.  I was assuming this was for fun, so all you who want to figure out where I live, feel free.  I have plenty of beer and a really awesome house with an amazing pool.
Posted 18 months ago by Laurali Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Windborn, I move so often it would be kind of hard to find my current address, lol. As for password, NOTHING I have ever said here could ever really lead to my password. My mother would probably not even be able to guess my password, or even part of my password, even if she had a million guesses. :P

    6. When FS was dying (close date was 3/15/2011), somehow the alpha tester Aldaris got on the FS forums and hyped up Glitch for us in a thread where we were searching for and suggesting games to play when FS closed down. Then a large group of us started a Facebook group together, and Aldaris alerted us to queue jumping, perhaps in early March. Once I queue jumped, I think I only waited a week or two, and my first test was March 10.
