Reveal locations on map as you explore

I just started the game, and I really like it.  I especially like the vast world, which just invites exploration.  However, I think exploring would be more fun if the map were blank at first, and filled in each location as you arrived there.  That way, players would really feel like they were discovering new areas.

If people don't like that, then at least mark which locations a player has and hasn't been to.  It would make it much easier to gather exploration XP.

I really like this game, and I'm excited to see it go live!

  • I love the blank map idea!

  • Locations should also be discoverable by a player giving you a teleport script or a chat link. Effectively, they're helping you fill in your map with their knowledge...

  • I like this idea a lot. It would also help me keep track of where I still haven't visited...

Alternate idea: shading on streets that you haven't been to yet.

  • I think this is a pretty cool idea, if it could be implemented.

  • Neat ideas. I like the shading idea more because it would kind of remove the need for the Greasemonkey location checker script, which I think is becoming pretty hard for Dave to keep up with the more the world expands...would give the fellow a break:) I think the invisible map could be kinda neat but I also sort of enjoyed seeing what was out there for me to go visit. Maybe it would have all the larger areas and like...a lead-in street, but the rest blank.

  • This would definitely make the game more interesting, encourage exploration, set new goals for players that want to fill the whole map, and make it obvious which streets you've never been to so you know where to focus your attention when exploring. I like it!

  • +1, like the idea also...thought I had posted that here, but apparently I hadn't yet.

  • Shading would be nice, as long as a high level teleporter wouldn't be penalized for not having visited an area they are teleporting to.

  • Pinkhair: I don't know, maybe it would be fair to have to walk to a place and learn its coordinates before teleporting there.  We're not wizards, after all ;)

  • I don't like it. How am I supposed to know where is somewhere I've never been to? I'm thinking just mark the first street of every area. As in, any street that connects to another area's street.

  • Kitkat, by exploring!

Anyway, I posted about this before.  I think it would make sense for your map to show streets you have visited and streets connected by street signs to those you have visited.  There could be a big global map with no street detail which shows you how the various areas connect to each other (so you would know, for example, that somewhere there are streets in Shimla and Chakra which connect up, but you wouldn't know which streets they are).

  • larky, KitkatCat: I think that's what I (Rascalmom, not Hank, long story) meant up there. Like...show all the areas and just the connector roads but leave rest blank. Then you'd see the area but still have to actually visit the streets to flesh out your map...

  • I was thinking about this in relationship to Baqala/Choru. Here is this large, basically barren land. Two regions stretching out. Eventually we will build to the other side and (possibly) discover something new. As builders/people experiencing it, it is exciting. I even love the time limit because it creates a sense of having to weather the elements to cross it all.

But once the next region is built, it will be on everyone's map. If you come into the game next month, Baqala/Choru will just be a place you can skip, ESPECIALLY once you up your Teleportation skills.

  • Seconded, Lord Bacon-o.  I'm sure there are a lot of ways this can be played around with to preserve that feeling of dangerous exploration, but I don't think we should be able to teleport to streets in Baqala/Choru that we haven't visited.

  • I like this idea.  Would need a workaround for some quests though, such as getting your papers, where you're required to go to a specific location and do something.  Maybe those locations could appear on the map once you've accepted the quest but not the unexplored places in-between.

  • Yep, still loving this.

  • +1 Regions and their connecting streets should definitely be marked, but I love the idea of needing to explore to find the rest! For quests, I'm with martian-b.

And I don't think we should be able to teleport to unvisited locations, except with scripts. Shading the unexplored streets wouldn't really be that different to what we have now.
