Broken kitchen tools undervalued?

I usually sell my broken kitchen tools on auction because I know people need them to get the badge for fixing kitchen tools.

I usually sell them for about half of the new price but I'm wondering if they shouldn't be priced higher than then new prices?  Its harder to "make" a broken kitchen tool (through heavy use) than to make a new one.
I figure that maybe I  ought to price them at 3x what the new tool costs.

Thoughts?

  • Is it a quest or a badge that you get for fixing kitchen tools?

  • Yes, badges.

  • Oh I like, never thought of looking at the AH for broken kitchen tools and since I hardly ever cook it would take me ages to get those badges.
Please don't make them more expensive ;)

  • Well, I would pay more for a shiny, new sharp knife than an old, dull rusty one that's been used. You do make a good point though.

  • Most people that need to fix a broken tool probably don't buy one from the auction when all you have to do is ask around if anyone needs one fixed...or just fix one of your own since some tools are fairly easy to break anyway.
And I for one wouldn't pay more for a broken tool then for a new one (especially 3x more!).

  • i certainly wouldn't pay more for the broken tool!

did you go out and beat the old one on rocks, or did you get the benefit from its use while you were wearing it down? are you subtracting your added value from the cost of the tool you're so generously auctioning?

people actually buy broken tools so they can get badges? i just figure i'll repair my own tools and the tools of those that need and i'll get badges as a by-product of game play.

but i guess you can buy a shiny set of badges if that's what you like...

  • I haven't really heard of anyone buying broken tools for badges but that really wouldn't be worth it haha. It's not really a race to get all the badges and that's just unnecessary extra costs to buy at 3x the price (if they were to be sold at that amount).

  • I like this idea alot. I would price them at about what it costs to craft new ones with the tinker tool. I cook alot so I get good use out of them so I have no problem with selling at second hand rates.

  • I'm referring only to kitchen tools, not the other tools.  There is a special badge for fixing 3 cooking/kitchen tools but they take forever to break.

  • I will buy broken tool at 25% over unbroken price.  IM me in game if interested.

  • It must be a quest, I know I've done it but I don't see the badge on my profile.  Must be a quest.   You need to wait for a frying pan, blender or other kitchen tool to break.  There is no wear bar.

I fix all the other tools myself.

  • Here is an earlier discussion about broken cooking tools badge.   It seems to take a long time to get and without the wear bar you don't really know when or if you will get it.  If you could buy some broken cooking tools (which is why I sell them, but I thought I had the badge) you could munch some silvertongue or essence of silvertongue so as to be sure to get an enhanced reward when you do get the badge.

  • I definitely know what you mean! There is a situation in which the ability to a fix a tool is value added. I think you are well within your rights to do so...

...though whether it will sell, and whether people will holler "Unfair!!! Profiteering!!! The tool is BROKEN who DOES that" even though they themselves were looking to buy a broken tool, is yet to be seen.

  • Lots of cooking tools get broken in street projects when those are going, or one can cook in bulk.  If enough people want broken cooking tools that they'll sell at a premium, go ahead, more power to ya, but I don't think breaking them yourself is hard enough to really warrant paying extra for the privilege of fixing.

  • Some of us who cook a lot break kitchen tools regularly. I would happily pass along one of mine *free of charge* for repair to anyone who needs the badge. In the spirit of Glitch :)
That said, the auction is a free market and if someone wants to post broken tools on it for any price, they can. It is up to each person whether they wish to buy a broken tool or not.

  • Fn beat me to it - if you aren't dieing to get that badge today just wait for the street projects then announce that you are repairing kitchen tools for your badge, I know the last projects I broke a few.
