Why do machines and trees sling you around at all?

It's nice that you diminished the effect of trees pushing you so far away that your default interaction becomes the next tree over, but why on Ur do objects shove you around at all?

I see no logical purpose other than to annoy the player and screw up their position, which they chose on purpose before interacting with the thing.

Good to know that you're still tweaking, though.  It's really quite a nuisance to be pushed off a ledge in your own home by your own property!

  • I can't say this has ever happened to me. Are you saying that your avatar is literally being moved over by interacting with an object?

  • When you mine, for example, the game automatically moves you to the left or right side of the rock you're mining.  This was recently tweaked so you can stand in front of the rock a bit, but it's still automatically pushing you over a bit if you start at the center.

  • Now trees pull me in close. It's so friendly and a huge improvement on being shoved a couple of steps out of range.

  • I don't know how many times I've fallen off a ledge scraping barnacles or jelling jellisacs.

  • Machines do this.  It's a safety thing.  ;)

  • It's better than it was, but I don't understand why it happens at all.  Previously people had theorized that it moves you off the object so others can have access to it, but now that trees pull you in to cover the maximum amount of tree, that theory's been invalidated.

Also if everyone in Ur can stand in a huge pile on top of the tool vendor, then it's clearly unnecessary and the behavior is probably not for the benefit of others.

So...what was the rationale in the first place?  Someone took some time to code it...what problem were they trying to solve?

It just drives me crazy when the game grabs the controls from you for no purpose.

  • It's so that you can't just stand in one place and harvest every tree on the street.

  • Oh yes the slinging has become minimal. I've always suspected it was to allow other glitches to use the same resource while you are.

If it doesn't move people slightly away from a rock a mouse only player might not be able to click a rock if there are 4-5 glitch already mining it spread out over the rock.

As a keyboard player this wouldn't affect anything so long as you know there is a hidden resource to up arrow for.

  • Hmmm, so what you're saying, Noenell, is that you could just click trees from a distance if it didn't shove you around?

A plausible explanation...although this behavior has been going on long before there was a zoom function and you could only see a few trees at once.  And there doesn't seem to be a problem letting you click away on the crop beds (although this method is way annoying compared to keyboard interaction).

And it still doesn't explain why machines give you such a dramatic heave ho that you can't even touch them when they're done manhandling you.  Antisocial little bastards, they are.

  • Noenell's explanation made absolutely no sense to me... until I remember that some people play with a mouse. XD

  • After further consideration, you can "remotely" interact with pigs and even butterflies you can't reach, so remote tree harvesting should be fine.  I don't imagine it's supposed to be a challenge to harvest from trees, whereas there's some smallish degree of skill in catching chickens and bugs.

  • Just noted that poisoning a tree pushes you away from the tree in the way other tree interactions do not.

  • Do what now?

  • I wish it would sling you to the side when interacting with a shrine. Can't tell you how many times I've inadvertently donated to another glitch's pocket because of this.

  • Yeah, the toilets behave differently.  If you're far away from them, they suck you in, but if you're right on top of them, they don't move you.  Which is nice for you, but annoying for others.

It is odd that the one time it's actually important to get people out of the way of the resource, the game doesn't do it.

  • Machines have invisible arms attached to them that will sling you around. I found this out by wearing glasses that let me see these arms

  • Yeah, you know.  The fancy toilets scattered all over Ur that people are always flushing things down.

  • overall it's the same reason in all likelihood. A positional auto adjust to ensure an animation works properly.
