piggy feeding behavior weirdness

I have a pet piggy at my house (a generous glitch mailed me a piglet) and today I witnessed a second instance of a strange behavior.
I had been gardening for a few minutes.  I dropped some potatoes on the ground and the piggy said "yum" and came closer and ate some STRAWBERRIES.

I have crops all over the ground for him to eat, but it seems he doesn't consider eating them until I drop something.  I don't have the RHK skill necessary to have a feeder, so I do a fair bit of manual feeding (mostly to get seeds).

I wonder if there's a defect in the piggy self-feeding logic that prevents him from eating crops on the ground until a player action triggers it.

  • I know they'll eat certain items left on the ground, grain in particular. Even so, they don't each much in a given day so you might not even notice. Other foods require feeding (maybe piggies don't like them much?). Also, they get fed any time you harvest a tree while they're standing underneath. I'm not sure if that applies to during crop harvesting as well.

  • The same thing happened to me - I left different kinds of produce on the floor for my piggies to eat while I was away for a couple of (real) days, but when I came back, only one of the three piggies remained alive. I felt guilty I made them starve to death, but there was still a lot of things to eat left lying on the floor. Now I'm paranoid and feed my remaining piggy every time I play on top of keeping a big pile of grain right under its nose. It seems not to touch it though, and sometimes doesn't let me nibble itself even though it literally wallows in grain.

  • Same issue: produce, grain, etc. on the ground. I drop a freebie dish (might have been a bit of cornbread or summat) and pig's on that like white on rice.
    Strange.

  • If you don't have feeders, then drops from harvesting of trees is how they eat, so eating dropped food is the way they normally eat, thus normal.

  • I notice that my piggies will only eat from my egg plant if I am harvesting - otherwise, they will only eat from the feeder.
