item display "hierarchies"

One of the ways that I enjoy designing my home, and pushing the limits of the options available for designing things in my home is by "layering" items… meaning if I want to make a "campfire", I would start with one of the fire tabletop decorations, then place individual chunks of metal rock in front of it, so as to kind of make it appear like coals, and hide the bowl, and then put a layer of those delightfully useless "rocks" that come from cheese, in front of the metal rocks, so as to make it look like a campfire.

It all works out wonderfully in design… the catch comes in when I returned to that room, the layers are not the way that I placed them, putting the "rocks" BEHIND the "coals", thus making it look like a randomly placed mass with flames :-).

As I was contemplating the easiest, least invasive "fix" for the rendering, the idea of placing a timestamp on each object within some kind of "radius" would allow for items to be rendered according to the placement time – thus maintaining the original placement.

Who knows – you guys are the professionals – I'm just a newbie of sorts… But again, thanks for listening!

  • +1 meeelion.  I would love to have permanency in terms of item layering.  Right now the only things that you can really count on is furniture items do stay either in front of or behind the other items you place; trophies do not and neither do items.

  • +1 This would be a natural lead-in to creation of building block items which weren't complete in themselves, but allowed people to build up custom decorations. I.e., individual bricks, tiles, pieces of molding and other architectural elements.

  • Layering inconsistencies are frustrating, for sure.

And it looks like I'm giving myself a particularly brutal shave when I scrape barnacles too. :D
