Badges vs. Quests

I love quests and goals, however I find the badges disappointing. As I play the game, I'll be doing an activity and suddenly I am alerted that I've been awarded a badge. It's like I've accidentally achieved something.

Wouldn't it be SO much better to state the badge goal first as a quest? For example, one of the quests would read "Cook 41 meals with an Awesome Pot", which would eventually earn the 3-Star Cuisinartist badge.

1) Quest/goal is stated
2) Player works toward goal
3) Player is rewarded with badge

  • I actually enjoy the (seemingly) random nature of the achievements, especially early on when one first begins. Having a quest to make Cheese might remove the oh-so-enjoyable surprise of suddenly being proclaimed a Cheesemonger!

However if you want to set your own goals and work towards them you can see all of your un-achieved achievements by looking at www.glitch.com/achievements/ and clicking "hide achieved". Then simply

    1)Pick a Goal
    2)Work towards Goal
    3)Goaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal!

  • I too like things as they are.

You can look up the badges and then work toward them if that's what you want but, for me,  going about my Glitchy business and suddenly being told  I've done the X action an amazing Y  times is a nice surprise and puts a smile on my face.

  • I too really dig the surprise, so I also support leaving things as-is, particularly since, as The Cat Face points out, badge hounds can now visit the 'achievements' page in the encyclopedia.

  • Lots of people like to work towards the badges, so for them it's not really a surprise.  Me, I enjoy the occasional popup saying I completed something, so I like the way it is now.

  • Hey thanks all and especially to The Cat Face. I didn't even know about seeing my individualized checked badges/achievements in the encyclopedia area! I thought the encyclopedia was just for descriptions of everything. I'm also excited to find which areas I have not visited yet.

I can't believe I'm level 30 and just now discovering this. Perhaps a direct link on the profile page would make it clearer. Although, maybe this is to create more of a surprise/mystery for people, but as mentioned before, I want more quests and can now reference them easily. Thanks again!
