Community gardens or private gardens?

I've been really saddened to see what has happened to the community gardens now that herbs are worth a lot. It seems greed has taken over the spirit of sharing and community... something I had hoped would not happen in Glitch.

I used to go to the gardens, clear away any dirty plots and plant them. I'd then pick whatever was ready, shuck a few and replant those as well.

Now everyone is guarding 'their plots' and 'their herbs.'

May I suggest that if you want to have a private garden that you buy a house and do it there? Please support the community spirit of glitch, and share and support each other.

  • I agree with you Geeki- people should just buy a house for a private garden and plant there.  It's not hard;  I got a house within a week of playing.   Community gardens should be reaped and sowed at random by those who roll by, not camped.

The problem comes in where you can only have one house (I believe- I'm somewhat new) and you have to choose either a herb garden house or a crop garden house.  Thus, if you want to plant herbs but have a crop garden in your house, you are stuck with the community garden.

I want to say that this should be changed, but I am sure there might be a good argument for making people choose one type of house or the other though.  Do we want everyone in the game to be able to do everything?  If not everyone can do everything, there is more of a need for community cooperation.  Some people choosing to make and sell crops, some people choosing to make and sell herbs, then buying from each other, might be a good thing.

  • Sad fact is that people who act like you (and me) are now the bad guys for harvesting a plot and putting another seed in without standing back for other people and "their" plots every single time.Thief, jerk, creep are some of the names I've been called so far and I harvest not that often or that much. I used to visit the herb gardens every (german) morning for replanting, not harvesting.I take one and with replanting I give one for someone else. Can't see the wrong in that. Seeds aren't yours anymore after leaving your inventory. If you plant in community gardens, take the risk of harvesting less, there just is no mine or yours.

  • I'd like it if "container gardening" became a thing. I like my cottage and my crop garden plots, but the ability to grow a few herbs in a flower pot or something would be nice too. It sucks that you can only choose one or the other.

  • Community gardens are a shared resource. When there was little competition for that resource, the gather-and-sow game style worked very well.

Right now with many people eager to share the same resource, it isn't surprising that somebody who bought an expensive seed, found a hard-to-find place to plant it, and added expensive guano feels that he/she has some claim to harvest that herb.

  • The problem is I don't like that you have to pick either a crop house or a herb house... especially as the herb houses all seem to come in the same flavor as opposed to the higher-end houses available for crop homes.

I second the flower-pot idea. I can deal with herbs being slow, but if I'm standing next to a plot that I've covered in guano to try and speed things up only to have someone snipe the plot because I looked away for five seconds... well, let's just say I haven't been playing Glitch very much this weekend.

  • I, like Geeki, used to wander through the gardens, plant whatever crop or herb seeds I had, and maybe harvest a few. Sometimes I still plant, but I don't bother doing it for myself. I just go without herbs or buy them on auction.

I agree there's a spirit of "this is my stuff" right now, but if someone puts in the effort and time to plant and guano and harvest, then I'm happy to let them have it. I think there's another, more regrettable aspect to this situation, and that's the genuine griefers who watch someone put in all that effort, taunt them while doing it, then pick the herbs right out from under them and don't bother to replant, citing that because it's a "community garden" they're not doing anything wrong. This has happened to at least a couple of friends of mine, and it's this type of behaviour that troubles me most.

Perhaps we need a couple of options for planting, so that we can mark them as "for me" (with a short window (a couple of minutes?) after they're grown for the planter to pick them--kind of like the lock on something dropped--and after this short window they're fair game) or "for everyone", so they can be harvested right away by anyone there. Maybe this simplifies the situation too much and more caveats are needed--such as limiting the number of plots one person can plant/claim at a time or requiring that for every plot harvested, the person must plant a plot--but surely we can find a way to make use of the gardens equitable for all.

  • Do we want everyone in the game to be able to do everything?

Yeah. I think everything should be open to everyone to do all of, if they want. There will still be community cooperation even so.

For example, I learned cocktail crafting but as it turns out, I rarely use it and don't particularly enjoy it. I'll be unlearning it as soon as I can. I'll gladly rely on other players and purchase/trade for any cocktails I may require. But I would never have known that I didn't like it particularly unless I was allowed to try it.

I do enjoy gardening. I want to do all the gardening.

  • I understand that it is frustrating and personally I wouldn't harvest a plot, if it is just ONE plot. But from what I've seen people occupy a whole field or two or three. And with 36 plots per garden - well - what do they except?
But even if people harvest the plot you were waiting for, keep cool. You are still harvesting a lot more than people just dropping by and spending less time on waiting.
Posted 12 months ago by Hackepeter Subscriber! | Permalink
  • On the question of community versus private, it is starting to seem like community gardens were just a griefing opportunity waiting to happen. In addition to it being nearly impossible to find an open plot, I don't enjoy the thought of a) taking a ripe crop that someone else worked to produce (because how is that fun?), or b) not getting the harvest that I worked to produce (again, not fun). In addition, now people are being taunted or extorted or threatened. No thanks!

If everyone had the ability to grow everything in their houses, the community gardens could still be used - but as a secondary rather than a primary source of crops/herbs. Perhaps there would be less incentive for people to be thieves and/or jerks.

  • Also consider how silly it is to 'guard' 'your' stuff in a community garden. if it was meant to be that way, you wouldn't have to guard it.
Posted 12 months ago by Geeki Yogini Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm fine with someone camping for a few spots and fertizilizing and waiting, whether it is for food or for herbs. But I agree with Hackepeter about hoarding a whole field or three.

Also, don't leave a note to "guard" your plants and take off, and expect people to abide by it. I do, because I'm nice like that, but a lot of people won't and I wouldn't blame them.

Most of the behaviour in the gardens over the last couple of days have actually been quite good with people asking if someone wants herbs that are ready and that they don't need.

  • I love the idea of growing herbs in containers. I've put the Tincturing Tailor challenge indefinitely on hold, because it's impossible to find plots to grow the necessary ingredients, and I've got better things to do than hover over a herb patch, and the prices on the auction site are ridiculous. Doesn't provide much incentive to log in and play. I'd happily give up one of my tree patches for a herb patch.

  • Again I am one that loves to do everything and I don't want to be forced to feel we have to have alts so we can do everything. In many other games I play I have so many alts just to do all the crafting it makes my head spin sometimes. I LOVE this game because we CAN do it all if we so choose. However we are restricted to houses that only either let you grow herbs or veggies and even more restricted to try and find a community garden plot that is open.

I am sad how this has split the community as well. Overinflated prices for herbs, snipping and sniping at each other, theft and lack of sharing...It is very very depressing to see this happening. Makes me rethink if this game is going from fun to no fun anymore. This is making me ill.

  • Casombra, just like how street projects were mobbed, the demand for herbs too will also eventually die down. Prices on auction are already starting to go down. Just give it time!

  • Everyone with 50K Alokol homes should now actively reach out to their firebog friends, and figure out a way to share.
But yes, container gardening would also be nice.
Again, the community gardens have now suffered a tragedy of the commons owing to market demand.
It does not impact me, because I have friends in the swamps.
You too could have friends in the swamps.
Swamp friends are great people to have in your quarter.
    Go forth and make friends.

  • It's Glitchen Gone Wild down there. Not pretty.
I had this idea that in a community garden you could bung a seed in, water/guano the lil sucker, then help yourself to an equivalent adult plant.... I have no interest in standing around guarding things and getting stressed by shifty-eyed purple thieves. I think I'll start a commune....

  • I own a crop-type house and I am quite irritated to be supposed to throw it away and buy a new one just to be able to get the herb-type badge (yep, I'm an anal-retentive completist...).

My proposal: let people build "other-type" patches in their homes using impressively expensive resources if they wish (i.e. a one-use-only Patch Changer machine worth as much as a house), so the game can remain balanced without needlessly hassling the players with mandatory house movings.
Posted 12 months ago by Ayzad Subscriber! | Permalink
  • While I'm learning PM2 right now (simply because of the long learn time, and I don't want it to get any longer), I too am putting the tincturing task on hold indefinitely and won't be using potionmaking any time soon either. The communal areas are ridiculous at the moment, and in the current housing structure I can't grow herbs since I have a 50k home.

I'm putting my faith in TS that this will be fixed with the new housing. You want garden plots? Sure, how many, pay for them and boom they're built. Want herb plots? Pay for them, boom done now they're constructed.

Like Flowerry Pott above, I like having the ability to pick and choose what I want to do. And just because I *can* make cocktails doesn't mean I enjoy doing that. I do, for some reason, have an addiction to making Lemburgers though (both for myself and for auction). Gardening serves me to a point, and is quite handy now for creating piles of potatoes for my still, but even then I wish I could be growing herbs alongside the potatoes so I could do a little with my cauldron as well.

There's some things I go to the AH for, and some things I want to do myself. Let's be honest, there's only so much TIME when we log in to play, we CAN'T truly do it all unless we don't log out (and fine, let's be honest, some people here do that. Me personally, I have a 9-to-5 with a mortgage to pay and a wife & daughter to support). Let the world balance itself. Give the players the ability to build the world they want. And I think TS "gets" that and is part of why they've unlaunched.

So I guess time will tell if my faith is placed well in them or not. Until then? Yeah, it sucks I can't/won't participate in what's happened to the herb market, but I'll survive. There's plenty else to do in the game.

  • My enjoyment of the game has gone down significantly in the past few days because of the "herb crisis". I've had multiple people jump up and down on me and even a crowd berate me because I used the garden just like I thought community gardens worked: you give a little, you get a little. I harvested some crops and replanted and have been instantly harassed with things like "THIEF!" and "Give me my herbs!". It's really frustrating and honestly- makes me not want to play the game. A few weeks ago the gardens- herb and crop- were some of my favourite aspects of this game. I hope it dies down again after everybody gets their tincturing out of their system.

  • Need I mention Ajaja Bliss and Neva Neva? Or the wannabee Bernie Madoff kids who've infected auction with sniping programs?

It's not like greed doesn't exist. Greedy people look to exploit any situation in which fairness is the motto, and where they can't in real life, they'll be in games, prepping, studying, adjusting, prior to fking up the real world economy for a pocket full of neo-Roman Silver. That is, if they aren't already.

If there's one thing that attracted me to the game it was that sense of fairness, one that I prefer over greed. Unfortunately, it's just as attractive to the enemy, and in general, as a group we're too controlled by rules they set regarding "freedom of choice" to kick their asses out.

I walk by the community gardens and see ripe stuff all  the time. I don't touch it. Why? because I have a private garden. community gardens weren't mean as a secondary garden, they were meant for those who haven't got a house yet. So hard for the greedy folk to understand that simple fact? I do water though, and occasionally even toss a bit of guano on. Why? because I have a house and have leveled enough to have access to and knowledge of things that the newbs who often have to use community garden don't have. So hard for the greedy to understand?

nvm...they understand. In fact they count on that spirit of altruism to line their pockets.

lol, Just wait for the apologetics to start.

  • Once again, two groups with different rule-sets share a scarce resource. Ajaya Bliss, anybody?

Group A has in the past used the not-very-busy public gardens at will, harvesting what they found and sowing whatever they felt like. This, to group A, is the sharing spirit of Glitch.

Group B is more cohesive group of people who try to share scarce public plots by making shared rules, agreeing that the one who plants and guanos a spot gets the produce.

Problems arise when someone from Group A arrives in the garden expecting to harvest, then plant. Members of Group B are outraged that their shared beliefs are not respected.

I admit that my sympathies here are more with Group B. I do not see that it is any more greedy to want to harvest an herb that you yourself planted than it is greedy to want to harvest an herb that you did not plant. Also, the idea that an herb 5 hours in the future should be a perfect repayment for taking an herb that is ready right now reminds me of that fellow in Popeye cartoons ... "I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today."

Here are a limited number of public herb plots. Perhaps some could be set aside for the members of Group A to harvest just as chaotically as they choose, while other plots are short-term rentals to let people "own" a small plot or two for the few hours their 500 c herb seed is growing.

  • I tried a little experiment tonight. With all the animosity, gouging and general unpleasentness surrounding the Herb situation, I thought I'd do my part to help out our Northern Glitchen.

I planted my herb garden over and over again with Purple, Rookswort, Rubeweed, Hairball, etc and double guanoed it to get it out fast. I then put it on the auction for a fraction of the going price - hoping that some of you in the north could make your PM quests without having to mortage the house in Alakol.

For the most part, I think the buyers were exactly that - plotless Northerners who were just looking for a fair price.

One bad apple, though, took advantage of my "help" and immediately repackaged my Hairball at 5 times the price I was asking.

Just thought I'd add my two cents.

EDIT: took out some useless commenting...

  • Dr. Hackenbush:   I know you intended well but I don't think that approach will work while there is a high demand.   One of your competitors will just buy up your herbs and put it right back on auction at the  higher price.   Its one of the reasons I stopped selling purple and other herbs early after reset,

Better to just give it to your friends or or put up an update stating that you are selling herbs for lower than auction prices.
Posted 12 months ago by Treesa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I agree with Tressa here: for better or worse, the market sets the going rate, and unless there's an ongoing, concerted effort to dump enough herbs to bend the supply/demand curve, selling cheaply is just a recipe for quick flipping. Randomly giving out herbs/seeds or doing some charity guano-spreading seems like a better ongoing way to change the mood in the community gardens.

From a gameplay perspective, Kalavana could perhaps host a fourth herb garden, given the paucity of herb-patch housing, although the people who like living quietly off the subway map may disagree...
Posted 12 months ago by Holgate Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yes, Holgate, those living quietly off the subway map disagree. Adding more gardens doesn't solve the problem. Changing the way people interact, does.

My 'experiment' was to see if those who are buying Herbs are doing so - in order to fill a quest - or to make a profit. In my short experiment, I found that for the most part it is the former.

I won't repeat it, because it told me what I needed to know.

As far as the "market" setting the price, maybe you should experiment a bit more. I was able to dump enough Purple on the market to drive new sellers down to my price, where it remained for some time.

A few people making a concentrated effort can change the whole supply/demand imbalance and the resultant price gouging.

That was part of what I was seeking.

Yes, perhaps it's a bit naive, but it's also a bit cynical to think that a few people can't make a difference. Personally, I like to be the change I seek.

  • Community gardens are vulnerable to the tragedy of the commons, isn't that known for at least 400 years now?

But there is hope! Glitch home-owners with a herb garden can start their own private community garden. Sharing a garden with 3 or 4 fellow Glitchen is a rewarding experience. Social behavior improves dramatically when the social fabric is tighter. Excercise your Glitchen-right to free association!

As to Glitchen upset about high prices: The prices you see listed at auctions are _offers_ It's up to a buyer to agree to such an offer if the buyer believes its worth it. The prices for _actual_ herb sales are always the result of a buyer and seller both agreeing on that particular price.

People, no matter the numbers, cannot do anything if the TS sanctioned API includes the ability to engage in those manipulations by use of automation. It only takes one ambitious creep to keep the prices jacked up.

  • Why not build a community garden on every housing block of the other type of patch from those in the houses there?

It would be open to everyone and having so many would mean there would be a plot free for anyone who needed it.You would just have to look.

  • Just my 2cents- I try to lead by example in the community gardens: harvest, plant, water and guano even if the seeds aren't mine...basically "do unto others" and all that good stuff.  Granted, I have come across some super sweet and generous Glitchen in those gardens the past few days...so YMMV regarding the particular environment you're harvesting/planting in.  That being said, it would be really cool if, like Morgana mentioned, there were also options of having micro community gardens on housing blocks and such.  Sounds like an even better way to get neighbors to meet and allow for a teensy bit of herbage flow as an added benefit. :D
Posted 12 months ago by Flirty Gertie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Please don't add guano to herbs and/or vegetables in the community garden that aren't yours, because often people will know how long the plant takes to grow, and aim to come back just before so they can harvest it. If you add guano it will sprout before the player is ready and then acts as temptation for the garden thieves because it is left untended.

And with regard to vegetables, many (most?) people are planting them for the harvesting quests, so it does not help if some kind person harvests for them (even if they return them to the original player), as that does not fulfil the quest and they have to start over.

It took me multiple goes to complete some of the quests because of those two things :(

If you are doing the quests in communal gardens, I recommend you go and get some guano  first, it will save your time and your sanity :)
Posted 12 months ago by Ffreyn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Just a heads up:

If you are doing any of the crop growing quests, ask a friend if you can use their garden for the quest.  If they give you a key, you will be able to plant and harvest your crops without the difficulties of using the community gardens.

And if you are trying to do them in the public gardens, take two guano for each seed package and use them as soon as you plant.  Then stay there beside your crops while they mature.  It's not reasonable to expect other people to wait hours for your crops to finish if they can get access to the plot for their quest in just a few minutes by putting guano on them

  • It seems like poor timing on TS's part.  They keep talking about housing upgrades and presumably at bare minimum that should let people decide what kind of plot they want.  I'm interested in the herbal skills now but I have a 50k home in a great location in Salatu I'm not willing to give up for a private herb garden.  And it's looking like trying to fight for a spot in the communal gardens is not worth the increase in blood pressure.

Now they've made herbs crazy popular without giving more access to them.  I feel like a better thing to do would have been to roll out the potion skills after housing upgrades, assuming plot choice will be a factor.  I get that they want to show they are adding things but there had to have been some skills they could have implemented that didn't result in a bloodbath.  I'll just learn the skills and sit on the quests until I see the housing update.

I also agree with Flowerry Pot.  I want to try all the gardening, not just whichever ones TS has decided for some reason are allowed.  Swamp houses get personal barnacles, egg plants, firefly swarms, AND herb gardens.  That's an awful lot of exclusives for just one type of housing.  The first 3 make sense due to darkness and location flavor, but please free up the herbs a bit.  Some of us want sunshine AND flowers.
Posted 12 months ago by Space Core Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Plot choice IS a factor.  You choose your house based on what kind of plots you want.

People seem to be complaining because they have to make a choice.  I don't think that having to make some choices is a bad thing and I hope they continue to have a few things in game that are exclusive.  So that there are real choices to make.
Posted 12 months ago by WindBorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I don't mind choice.  But I think I should be able to pick either an herb garden or a crop garden in my personal house so I can make my house choice based on aesthetics and location.  I very much hope that TS will implement that choice in the new housing system.

My point is, right now we have the following features for ALL houses:
Personal animal space (varies by house size)
Cabinet for storing items (varies by house size)
Tree patches (varies by house size)
    Trophy case

For non-swamp houses we get the following exclusives:
Crop garden (varies by house size)
    Dark tree patch (cave only)

For swamp houses we get the following exclusives, depending on model:
Herb garden (varies by house size)
    Dark tree patch
    Jellisac Growth
    Peat Bog
    Firefly swarm
    Mortar Barnacles

I'm just saying that the swamp houses have a lot of specific resources and that seems unbalanced.  If I don't like the look of the swamp houses and I want an herb garden, I'm sore out of luck.  But I have the choice of an apartment, meadow home, cave home, tree house, and modern home if I want crops.  If we got some swamp-style houses with different art, maybe I'd move.  But I don't like them, and I think I should have the ability to have my house look the way I like and make some decisions regarding the content of my house.
Posted 12 months ago by Space Core Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Animal pens and bright tree patches are, I believe, exclusive to non-swamp houses.

From all that Tiny Speck has said about the major housing revamps coming up, it seems that they'll be giving us the flexibility in housing appearance and content that you're asking for, space core, but it's going to take a while longer for that project to be ready.
Posted 12 months ago by Granny Weatherwax Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Well yes, Animal pens are exclusive but you can still have animals running about no matter what house you have.

That's why I'm expecting, the former post of mine was more of a response for Windborn trying to detail that I'm not frustrated about having to make housing choices, but annoyed that TS decided to vastly increase the demand of herbs without making them easier to access first, since only 1/6 of the housing designs have the herb plots.  Even the pumpkins were designed to be grown by everyone when they were implemented.

If they had decided to make magical V8 juices created by combining veggies you can bet there wouldn't be this much fuss over access to crop plots because there are simply so much more of them.
Posted 12 months ago by Space Core Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm way in favor of choice. I just don't want the choice to be between different parts of the same skill (in this case, gardening).

Space Core wrote: If they had decided to make magical V8 juices created by combining veggies you can bet there wouldn't be this much fuss over access to crop plots because there are simply so much more of them.

To a degree. But I like there being some forced choices: Sparq Lee Miner, currant zillionaire, shouldn't be able to buy the equivalent of a 50k with a crop garden and a herb garden and a firefly swarm and a couple of barnacles and... etc.

  • I'm exaggerating, but I really don't think getting both crops and herbs in the same house will be the end of social Glitch.

As it stands, crops vs. herbs is basically the ONLY thing in the game where there is a meaningful tradeoff in which choice you make, unless you count the increased learning time of skills. It's kind of weird to me that we have no real tradeoffs in 99% of the game, but if we got rid of this one tradeoff it would suddenly ruin things.

  • Well, we don't know if it will be possible for folks to have "everything they want" inside in the new updated housing. But of all the things that people can have inside, crops or herbs are the only things that one must choose between. All the other things (like rocks, other trees, bogs/dirt piles, jellisacs etc.) are easily available out in the world. Heck, even crops are easily available from vendors, making them not all that advantageous to farm.

I honestly don't think that players will only stay in their houses. I have to regularly go walkabout harvesting beans (one tree doesn't keep up with all the Awesome Stews!), just to give one example.

  • Im very annoyed with people in the COMMUNITY Herb Gardens, they act like no one else is allowed to take anything, obviously they are not familiar with the word "community"

And dont even get me started on those notes, srsly if you want a privat herb garden get a house in that area!!
If people  cant share then it should be changed that only the people who planted it are able to harvest.
Im not around alot anyways but not being able to finish a quest bc of other players, or being bitched at by them bc i dared to take and replant...  really takes the fun out of it :(
