Home street etiquette...

If you visit home streets, please do not just grab everything available to you and take off.
If you pick herbs... shuck and replant.
If you see freebies set out... dont grab every bit of them and not leave anything for the next person.
Please tithe if you can.

... if you have anymore to list, please do so in comments...

:)  Thank you.

  • Those are sensible requests. Not everyone will always abide by them. If anyone gets upset and irritated when others don't play by their rules, they're just setting themselves up for heartbreak and high blood pressure.

Anyone who can just accept it and not be bothered by it will in general have a much more enjoyable time playing Glitch.

I say this as a voice of experience. :D

  • If you expect people to abide by that all the time and get bent outta shape when they don't...

You're gonna have a bad time.

  • i'm not sure it is a sensible request to ask visitors to your street to tithe your icons. i don't verb other people's icons, so for me to tithe someone else's icon is just about me tossing a big was of cash at them.

other hand, if you USE other people's icons and they are tithing them, you are sucking their cash away.

those verbs are not free. somebody pays for them.

additionally, tithing is linked to your player level, so if i tithe a low level player's icon, i am just burning cash. costs me nearly 1000c for each tithe. if you aren't at a HIGHER level, nobody is getting a bargain.

it's unreasonable for me to think lower level players should pay my tithes unless they're verbing my icons, and it's a waste of good money for me to tithe lower player's icons if i don't verb.

  • I don't have the link, but using icons on someone's street gives them greater IMG I believe than many other things. Even if the icons aren't tithed you sometimes get Giant Love from them. I don't always tithe when I use an icon, but if I have extra cash I do. I do second someone else's comment to completly mine a rock rather than leaving a little stub. It allows the rock to regenerate, I'm sure some players don't realize that, or maybe they are low on energy and have to leave.

  • If you harvest the trees, please pet and water them.  If you pick the veggies, please clean, water, and plant more veggies for others.  If you nibble the pigs, please check the feeders and make sure they have food.  If you mine a rock, mine it all the way. (They do not grow back, they only respawn when fully mined).
Posted 4 months ago by Innie✿, Obviously Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The other reason for completely mining the rock is that the person does not get iMG for your visit and mining the rock unless you completely mine it.

  • Honestly Holly, most newbies dont know this stuff.  I will never forget the day someone told me "you know that rock wont grow back. you have to mine it all the way!"  It was a light bulb moment.

  • I remember leaving stubs as a newbie, I thought it was greedy to take it all and should leave some for others.
Posted 4 months ago by Miss Parsley Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Why should I have to tithe on your street? Why do I need to pet and water the trees? This does not effect your game play. I do not need to water and pet the trees before harvesting. It's preference. I don't have the time and just plain don't want to.

I really really wish people would stop telling others how to play. If you don't like others on your home street leaving half way mined rocks then don't supply the rock. If you don't like empty gardens then remove it from your street. Block every single person so they can't mess up your game play.
And stop leaving freebies if you're mad that people take them!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why should I have to check your piggies feeders? That's not my responsibility. If you have pigs on your street it's up to YOU to keep them alive. Not me.
Posted 4 months ago by Eye Wonder Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Neglected trees can stop producing fruit and die. That does affect my game play when its on my street, actually.
Posted 4 months ago by Innie✿, Obviously Subscriber! | Permalink
  • You can harvest about 20 times or more without having to water. I have trees in my backyard that only I touch. I rarely water them. They still harvest. Once they stop, I water them and all is good. I do not have to water and pet every time. It's preference not an obligation. They won't die if you don't water them, they just wont' harvest.
Posted 4 months ago by Eye Wonder Subscriber! | Permalink
  • 20 times of you alone in your backyard is 20 games days. 20 times on a public/home street could be one game day.
Posted 4 months ago by Dinnaga Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Eye Wonder is correct on this one - You only have to pet+water once the image of the tree no longer shows any fruit, and just one pet+water will completely restore it (with the exception of wood tees, obviously). Efficiency!

  • I've always lived by the rule of 'leave things in the same or better condition than I found it'.
Posted 4 months ago by MaryLiLamb Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Lets address these one by one, since some I agree with, others I dont.

    1. If you visit home streets, please do not just grab everything available to you and take off.

If you are implying that I need to pet every pig, chicken, butterfly, and pet and water every tree...block me now. Because I refuse. Theres no rule that says I have to, and most of the time, I dont want to.

    2. If you pick herbs... shuck and replant.

OMG THIS DRIVES ME NUTS!! Yes, please hoe the garden. Yes, please replant! Yes, even there is nothing to harvest, please water the garden. Are you aware that the garden will stop growing if it needs water?? So, please....water, shuck and replant. Or dont touch my garden.

    3. If you see freebies set out... dont grab every bit of them and not leave anything for the next person.

Yea, I have a free pile on my street. Dont take everything just because you can. Its freaking rude. Either save something for someone else, or leave something before you leave. And if I put out 15 things, and you take all 15 things....I expect you to leave at least 10 things in return. When I find out people have took my whole pile and left nothing....they get blocked. Its rude.

    4. Please tithe if you can.

No. You tithe. They are your icons you pay to upkeep them. I have my own to upkeep. Besides, they automatically reset after so long so even without tithing, you can still reflect and all that good stuff from them. And I know they do because I never tithe mine, and I can still use their verbs!
Posted 4 months ago by Serenity's Mommy Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I've never heard that about icons "resetting." That's totally news to me (and I've been around for a long time). Are you sure someone else isn't tithing for you?
Posted 4 months ago by Pascale Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It's been said before but I'll say it again: If you don't want to perform any maintenance/upkeep on the resources (yours or others) that is fine. There are no rules about this.
BUT - the fact is there are many "drops" for cleaning, watering, petting, planting. And the drops are decent (no more ginger & sesame oil ). Amber, SWF's, game tickets, music boxes, snow cones, loam are all found as well as iMG &, sometimes, currents.
If you can't be bothered, the person coming behind you will be very happy.
    I hope it's me :)

  • I'm a bit curious if people were having this rock problem before the nub wave. I know I was a culprit of leaving stubs before I read about it on the forums. That information isn't on the wiki, I never heard it in game, and I thought if I mined it all the way, it'd disappear. I did that on accident once, before I knew what the last stage of rock looked like. I felt horrible. I thought that guy was going to be out a rock. Simply put, new glitchens don't know any better. People keep telling them about gardens, about not ruining things. Taking the whole rock and leaving nothing (you have to admit, it doesn't look promising when there's nothing left when it vanishes) seems like a bad thing to do.

However I'm also a bit disappointed about the lack of notes and gnomes. I see a bunch of them for routes and things, but few of them lay down groundrules. Since some people are lax and some are strict, if you're going to be disappointed if people use your street in a certain way, you should say that. Especially now, with the new people. The game is changing and people need to adapt. My mom always told me you couldn't complain for 4 years if you didn't vote. And I think if you don't have a note or a gnome, you can't be angry. Perhaps that worked when everyone understood the game, but things have changed. There's a huge gap between the new and the old. Some may feel that taking care of a street is common sense, common courtesy, and it shouldn't be up to them to spell it out. Meaning you'd rather taint your own fun by having to block people and be butthurt instead of put up any sort of sign of expectations. If you haven't had problems with guests, then you don't need to. But a lot of these peeves could be solved by a pole. I'm thinking of putting rocks in my street. And there will definitely be a note.

As for the trees, I don't see what the big deal is. Say 20 people harvest a tree and it no longer bears fruit. Water it. Pet it. Hell, others would do it if it kept them from harvesting. New trees. Everything's fine.

  • The correct etiquette for my Home Street is to do what you want.

If you want to fully mine a rock, then please do so but if you don't have enough energy, or your pick broke or you simply have enough, then don't worry about.

If you want the  iMG from petting and watering my trees then do so. If you just want bubbles then just harvest them.

    All is great by me.

  • The title of this post is Home Street Etiquette. According to Wikipedia "etiquette is a code of behavior that delineates expectations for social behavior according to contemporary conventional norms within a society, social class, or group."

I believe the only social norm related to home streets that is agreed upon by the majority of players, and therefore deserves to be listed as etiquette, is that if you harvest herbs or crops from a home street garden then you should hoe, water and replant to the degree that you are able to do so.

Every other suggestion listed in this thread is something you can do if you want to be sure not to possibly anger a particularly picky street owner, despite the fact that most players would consider that not doing it is perfectly okay. Various players in various forum threads have listed the various behaviors on their various home streets that tick them off in various ways. I say baloney! It's all making up rules to tell other people how to play the game. Yes, of course, "do unto others..." and we should all try to behave politely and respectfully. But it seems we have gotten to the point when every time someone raises a new complaint of something done on their home street the rest of us are supposed to add it to our ever-growing list of rules of the things we should never, ever do on anyone else's home street lest we end up feeling like bad little glitchen. Again I say, "Baloney!"

The other day I happened upon a home street that was completely filled with large herb gardens and multiple sign posts saying, "Please do not harvest my herbs."  So this player had taken what is intended as a shared resource, filled it with the biggest currant-producing  resource, and let us all know that he intends to keep it all for his personal enrichment. It has been said (although I think not in this thread) that we should read all home street sign posts and follow the owner's wishes. Again I say, "Baloney!" That glitch was just a greedy *&*%&! Actually, when I arrived on that street every plot had been harvested and left weedy, and I have to admit I felt like the owner deserved it.

    End of rant.

  • @Pascale....when they were still in my house and not my tower, im sure no one was tithing them, including me,  and I could still use them every so often. Put one of yours in your house and never tithe it...the verbs will still show up after a while.
Posted 4 months ago by Serenity's Mommy Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Hawkwell...Had I been in a vicious mood and seen that garden, I would of picked all those herbs, and left a note saying streets are public. Move the garden to the back. But like I said, it would of depending on my mood. Unless it was yellow crumb. I cant resist free crumb! ROFL

The only actual rule I have on my street is, dont loot everything in my free pile (and if you do please leave other things for the person behind you) and to water, hoe and preferably replant my small herb garden. Now, it is small, so I dont expect replanting if it would take everything they just harvested to do it. But hoeing and watering is fine.

No one HAS to water my trees, No one HAS to mine my rock all the way, etc. They are my trees, I will water and pet them.  And when I first started, I also thought mining a rock all the way was bad lol. There really should be notes about that with all the new people we have, if a half mined rock bothers you that much (and if it does, maybe you just spend too much time on Glitch!)

In the end, how I play doesnt affect how any one else plays. IF a tree looks half dead, I'll be nice and water and pet it. But if its healthy...dont count on it.

  • Actually... to clear up one thing....
I actually realized that two of my original post were actually meant to be the same thing, so I should have edited it.
" please do not just grab everything available to you and take off."  was meant to be about the freebies and gifts set out.  I hate when I set out a bunch of different items and one person takes it all and leaves nothing for the next.

I could care less if people don't pet/water/etc.... I dont even do that myself.  LOL  My trees/rocks/whatnot on my street are pretty much for everyone else.  The stuff I actually use is in my house.  :)
Posted 4 months ago by Marla Singer Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Hawkwell....  I actually don't agree with assuming that person was greedy.  That wouldn't have even bothered me in the slightest bit.  But then again, I don't go to streets for a free-for-all mining/harvesting/plucking excursion.  I hit up towers.  Hell, I don't even grab the free gifts butlers give out.

Maybe the person filled their house street with all herbs/other things and wanted more room for their own personal herb harvesting?  Theres nothing wrong with telling people not to touch it when they're the ones doing everything and its THEIR street.  Sure, the streets are public but you're name (or anyone elses) name isn't on it.  They should be able to use it how they want.  Greedy?  Not at all.  Greedy would be running street to street grabbing everyone elses.

If I'm actually on someones street for the reason of verb... then.... chances are, I found them from a route and they have advertised that its ok to use said street for that reason.
Posted 4 months ago by Marla Singer Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think it's a bit silly to put your herbs in the front if you're expecting them to stay unharvested, sign or no.  But if I would have come across that street I personally would have respected the sign as it costs me only a bit of good will to do so.

  • Whereas it is NICE if a fellow Glitchen can do these things, requiring  them to do so nomatter what is ridiculous.  There are a variety of reasons why  a person might not be able to. But please ...relax on certain things or  your going to be miserable and stressing and NOT having fun!

  • So apparently the Serious Herbs route is no more. Both of the other two people on our short route seem to have bowed out. (Nobody bothered to tell me, mind you.)

Maintaining a large resource-intensive public home street is a lot of work. I understand why people get frustrated and decide that they can't be bothered anymore.

It seems that the tragedy of the commons is being enacted yet again on the home streets of Glitch. I'm lucky: I can afford to keep making my herb gardens available to all. I haven't yet had to resort to blocking anyone. I hope to continue to be able to be generous with my resources indefinitely.

  •  I replant and leave. Ill pet and water when I notice things need them.

Typically Ill pet and water a wood tree before I take a swipe at it; they love water.

If we did not have all these streets, well gosh we'd have to go out into Ur and play Glitch again.
Posted 4 months ago by ☣ elf ☣ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I agree with the idea of Please Replant (of course, otherwise it is just wasted space!), but I make the distinction of not blaming everyone to visit my street for empty plots. I seem to be getting over the 10 per game day my butler will show me in terms of visitors, and there is no way for me to know who has been leaving my plots empty and sad. There will likely never be a way for me to know that.

So I sigh, I hoe, I water, I replant, and I hope that the next person to come along will do the same.

It's not right to blame every visitor though, which I know I have been on the receiving end of, because it isn't every visitor's duty to care for every part of my street. Only the parts they use.
If you make a tree empty of all fruits/gasses/etc, water it + pet it. Otherwise, I don't care. And if you don't, the next person who wants to harvest will.
If you break something, check if you have any of the lower-level items to fix it. Don't feel the need to go home, come back, and fix it to 100% (unless that's your thing and you like it!) and don't feel like you have to put in all the work units or all the relatively expensive boards/gems/etc items into it. Just do what you can.

If your tool breaks and you can't finish something you started, consider leaving a message with the person's butler letting them know. Some people overreact to slightly misused resources, and having a name and an apology to match to it will probably help them be calm about it.

And freebie pile people: Leave a gnome or a sign if you want it to be a Swap Meet pile, because "freebies" implies that they are free. Meaning, you do not have to pay, barter, or swap to have them. If I see a free box of stuff at a garage sale, they don't tell me to leave a new box of stuff when I take it ;)

I am still a smallish glitch and the one thing I can never seem to get enough of is iMG. So when I find "work" to do, even if it costs me time and energy, I jump at the opportunity.

I mine quite a bit on Home Streets and try to always carry the materials to renew any depleted rocks. If I find myself without the particular materials needed I sometimes race home and back so that I can be the one to complete the project. There are a few street owners who want to renew things themselves and this I respect. Most seem to welcome help from their street's visitors.

  • I've been assuming that people would rather I harvest from their trees or dig their peats than have me do so in the general world, because I thought it gave them an imagination bonus to have visitors do stuff on their streets. I do most of the things listed above and set up my street so that visitors could pretty much do what they want there and I won't mind, since I figured it being public space I should make the options available ones I'm okay with. I'd rather someone not loot the entire free pile and leave something for the next visitor, but as long as nobody did that regularly, I wouldn't stress over it. It'd mainly bother me in the thought that someone else would come by and find nothing they could consider taking.

I try to read note signs whenever I see them and follow what they say. I really appreciate when people leave note signs. I think I agree with what was said earlier in this thread, leave info laying out how you want visitors to use your street.

The one thing that confuses me is icons. I'm not clear on how they work. I don't have any yet. I would think if you didn't want people using them, you'd put them in your house or backyard. I generally figure if you don't want something to be available to others, you'd put it where others can't use it. But does my use of them hurt others? I have tithed now and then, but not every time I've used one. And sometimes it will say a tithe is due but won't even let me tithe; I assume I didn't have enough currency at the time to pay a tithe.  I think I may just not use other people's icons for a while, just in case. I am not trying to hurt anyone. I do leave stuff in free piles and try to help out even newer/lower level players.

I am saving up to get my own icon, so that will make it easier to see how it works, but it will take quite a while to get enough emblems, and I only recently even learned how icons are made. I was planning to put mine on my street, since it looks like other people cannot just take them, but I'm not clear if that will make them significantly less usable by me.

I really wish people would leave a note or sign or gnome or something telling me what they expect/want me to do with their icons. I'd like to respect their wishes, but it'd help to know what those wishes are.

  • Icons want money as a tithe; this resets the actions they can do.  Typically I just run by the ones I have at home and never use them, running by them gives you random energy, or favor or mood.  Using them gives a large bonus, but then you have to shell out money to get it to work again.

Im not about to spend anything on that.  Some enjoy doing it, thats cool.  But I prefer to save my cash for other things (doughnuts is a good example).

They're round like onion rings but covered in chocolate.

Anyways, leaving an icon in the street is neat, but then often someone who is not that nice will come along, use every last one for whatever reason I cant fathom, and then never tithe a currant.  So I personally dont see the point in leaving them out for folks to abuse.

Its nice to use things on folks' streets: the spice trees alone is such a time saver compared to the old Ix run for spices.  Its nice to use the herb gardens too, and I am super careful to replant every spot I use, typically with the same thing that I plucked - often its yellow flower.

This allows the next glitch that finds them to go to town and grab it all too.  But I'd hope they take the short time to hoe, water, and then seed all that.

  • Okay, then I think I'll stop using icons when I see them. I already do plant if I take anything, and sometimes I plant just because there is an empty space. I've recently started trying to mine completely when I can... I did have no idea about that before and I was more prone to avoid it for fear of totally removing a resource. I haven't mined anything on anyone's home street, actually, because for a while, I was worried it wasn't renewable. Now I also know I can't fix them when they do run out, so I'll probably just stick to mining in the world. It's easy enough to do. But I do like to go to home streets either for random wandering or to look for various resources. Right now, it's peat I could use more of. I've tried to make my home street full of varied resources, so maybe it will help some others. Although it isn't as resource-rich as many homes with players who have been around longer, of course.

  • I think if you just try to go by the golden rule, you should be really ok on most people's home streets. This is supposed to be a fun game, not a high-powered ESP ethics examination.

You can't please all the people all the time, and the forums are full of sad comments from people who got blocked by someone and don't quite know why. If you try to be a good friendly visitor, chances are you will never make anyone unhappy, and if somebody does block you at least you will have a clear conscience.

I've put the icons in the tower but there is nothing you can take there either. Please honestly part mine, even trash the plots, I need the badges for restoring stuff. Anyone and everyone is welcome, and if I'm around in game I'll even give you an rk when you're there wih me.
Ps. If I visit your street and you're all precious about your stuff, I'm not likely to come back. I like leaving presents when I can so it will be you missing out.

    :-D

Okay, then I think I'll stop using icons when I see them.

I don't know if that's the way to go... doing one of the r verbs on icons actually gives a nice img boost for the street owner. You may want to tithe once in a while if you use them, but you won't be the only one using them so I wouldn't say you would have to tithe every time. Also, my own feeling tends to lean towards, maybe you use icons but never tithe, and that might be just fine if you are thinking of other ways you can contribute to a happy community.

I think if you just try to go by the golden rule, you should be really ok on most people's home streets.

  • Well, if the home owner leaves a note indicating their preferences, then that would obviously affect my decision. I'm doing alright on money right now, but I've run pretty low at times, so I try to be careful how I spend it. And I often try to do other things on home streets to help the people I visit. Icons just seem tricky and potentially will cause problems.

The golden rule isn't much help, since I am fine with people using whatever is on my street, but clearly some people have preferences for how their street is used. And there do seem to be general guidelines that aren't immediately clear. That's part of why the etiquette guides are useful - because many of these things really aren't obvious, especially to someone who hasn't encountered these items much.

Besides, not doing things is a safe approach. I don't want to interact with anyone who would get upset with me for visiting and not touching their stuff or doing anything. And I expect most people would be fine with me visiting and doing nothing or sticking to simpler interactions.
Posted 4 months ago by Larch Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Sure, Larch, I think your thoughts are fine, as far as how you interact with others. You're not hurting anyone else by taking a "not doing things" approach.

But I do think you're hurting yourself? I mean, obviously you have to prioritize what's important to you, and if you priortize not hurting others over getting things from home streets I can respect that. But, with the icon situation for example - people do put them out to be used, and I think you might be missing out on things unnecessarily.

  • On icons, if you tithe about once every four times you use an r-verb on someone else's icons, it'll all come out in the wash.

  • Hm, Larch, "not doing things" is actually not totally safe - you might still get blamed for messes other people have left. ;-) In the end, I'd say that if you do interact with other people's streets in a way that you  and most other players seem to find acceptable and are blocked for that, then that's not your problem but that of the person blocking you.

As someone who has two sets of icons out, one in the street and one in the tower, I expect that there are people who will use them. If I wasn't all right with that, I would have left them in my house. I do relatively often return to spent icons that have not been tithed on. If it ever reaches the point where I get too annoyed about the amount I have to tithe if I want to reflect myself, I'll move one set to my house again and let visitors do with the other what they want.

  • On icons: the first action following a tithe is 50% higher than others (see: mathemaglitch).

Personally, I'm much happier to run into an icon that needs to be tithed before I can reflect on it (I only reflect) so that I can get that bonus, than to tithe after using.
