After reset ?? Beer - Booze - NoNo - Purple Flowers - Naked -

Is there going to be an age limit when Glitch goes public ?

Parents are already talking about how when Glitch goes public their children are going to be playing.  One parent was saying how grown up their eight year old is, and acts like an adult.  They already have a mule account set up.  How will this effect the players now enjoying the game.  Parental control, doubt it, rather all sorts of rules on our behavior to protect the children.

I'm not anti children but there are thousands of games for them to be entertained by, this game should be reserved for adults.

We all have a blast playing Glitch but once the reset happens will it be the same.

If you start mining a rock first and someone else starts mining it too, you BOTH get more ore.  The game is designed to reward both people for sharing a rock.

"I've never met a courteous kid"
I suspect you've met several of them in this game, but, because they are courteous, you don't understand that they are kids.

  • Sharing rocks while mining is very annoying, at least to me.  I don't care if you supposedly get more ore or not.  Sometimes I like to take my time or maybe I have just drank an earthshaker and I'm mining two rocks at the same time.  It always ends up in a race when sharing a rock and I'm mining for the solitary of doing something by myself and hate the feeling of being in a race.  No matter what being an adult I will ask or mention the fact I do not need help mining, thank you.  Most adults will accept that fact and mine somewhere else.  Most kids don't or won't maybe under the false impression that it doesn't matter, after all we are going to both get more ore.

The game is designed so you can both mine together does not mean you have to mine together.  Adults are able to understand this concept because they are mature and realize there are plenty of other rocks to go mine.  Immature and young ones are unable to get past the idea that they are the center of the universe and have ever right to mine that rock regardless of someone else.

  • I have never gotten more rocks when mining with someone else! I usually get 45 to 55 rocks when mining alone,I have never gotten that much when someone butts in and mines the same spot I do ~and I say 'butts in' because none of them ever asked whether it was ok with me to mine the same rock. (there were more of the same type rock available,so it wasn't because they couldn't find another one)

  • If you get exactly the same amount mining a rock whether you do it by yourself or with others, you need to report that as a bug.  Staff can fix bugged rocks.

Not if it takes you 13 seconds to mine and it takes them only 4. I have gotten as little as two strikes from a rock before because someone runs up and essentially takes it from me, as I have no way to mine faster right away. The worst part is, when I leave that rock and go to another while they mine my previous rock, they either follow me, ignoring my attempt to remove myself from the situation, or they leave the map entirely, thus proving that they had no motive other than to mine with someone, in which case they should have asked.
This happens with Glitches that I know fully well are adults, by the way.

And no, you cannot get 45-55 rocks from a rock you are mining with someone else. You both get a total of 45-55 + a few extra from helping each other. You wouldn't each get a full rock's worth, that's not a bug it is common sense. There are x pieces of rock in each rock, you each get the proportion you strike out of it.

  • That's contrary to what staff said here
When you help mine, you mine as normal and always receive your normal amount of rock chunks (no matter what!), but everyone already mining the same rock receives an additional bonus.

There are not X pieces of rock in each rock Each person will get X pieces from mining a rock, depending on their skill level.

  • Okay. First. There have been so many threads like this, and I say the same to all of them: there's a difference between age and maturity. I'm young, and not everyone realizes it.

Second. You've never met a courteous kid? Wow. Never? You must not have met many kids.

Third. How the HECK did this turn into a mining debate!? :)

  • @Cupcake, cause only kids will steal your rocks.  If someone steals your rock, it proves they are a kid.

  • I think that what he said is unclear,ie did he mean the normal amount of chunks per whack,or did he mean the normal amount of chunks per rock? From what I have seen we get the normal amount of chunks per whack, but because we are 'sharing',not the same amount of whacks per rock.

eta:  Umm,yes Cupcake, the conversation seems to have shifted a bit.....

  • Stoot said

The minimum amount for solo mining is still 50. With two people mine together (assuming one is always helping the other, whether they take turns helping or not) the minimum will vary per rock (since they have different yields per "mine") but be around 58-60. With 5 or 10 people, you could get 100+ out of one rock.

  • Right, of course, WindBorn.

Please, people, really? This is not a thread about mining.

  • I understand what Stoot said WindBorn, but experience tells me that this is not exactly what happens. If you would like to meet when the game is open, I'd be happy to conduct an experiement with you to decide this once and for all. I really hope that I'm wrong, by the way.

  • 1/2 of 60 is 30, which is less than 50, thus mining together makes you receive less rocks individually per rock.
100 divided by 10 people is 10 rocks, which is also less than 50.

The point here was that someone claimed that children would always do that, implying that adults do not. Adults do it, and unless one specifically asks the person (or knows their age from previous comments) they do not know the age of that person, thus one is unable to verify that children (be it "all", "most", "many" or "few") act in such a way.
And as I have actually seen very little evidence of people under the designated allowable age of 14, I must assume that there are not many, especially considering that at 20 I was the second-youngest in a large Global chat at one point.

There was also a Demographics thread a while back (a month maybe?) which clearly showed that younger people were in no way a majority, and yet everyone seems to have experienced someone running up and insisting on co-mining without asking first, thus showing that it is likely that adults make the same action as it is presumed that children would.

"Immature and young ones are unable to get past the idea that they are the center of the universe and have ever right to mine that rock regardless of someone else."

Immature and old ones are unable to get past the idea that they are the center of the universe and have ever(y) right to exclude young adults and children from a game for their own perceived benefit, despite having little to no evidence showing that their ideas of the actions of youth are valid.

  • An idea to *help* weed out kids:

After a reasonably generous number of hours of play for free, require a credit card and charge it for a nominal amount like $1.00. On the credit card statement, the description should indicate that it's for an adult-only site - to give parents a clue about that, if their kid has borrowed their credit card to use.

  • My budget is too tight to allow for a dollar for a game. In fact, my budget is too tight to allow for eating three meals a day.

I would thus be unable to play due to poverty. Does that seem fair?
Posted 15 months ago by Biohazard Subscriber! | Permalink
  • My two thoughts:
    1) If a young'un is on here, it's because their parents have explicitly or implicitly allowed them to access mature sites.  That's one of many choices that they will have made, as good or bad parents.  I'm not going to get worked up about it.
    2) Anyone can be immature or antisocial.  In fact, some people need to relearn what maturity means when they start playing online games for the first time, because the environment is different from face-to-face socialising.

  • *sigh*

TS is covering their asses with the TOS age limit. Period. The rules will be broken and some parents may be offended if they look into the game their children are playing and it's full of innuendo that is most likely over the kid's head. But there is an age limit in the TOS, so TS is covered. It is clear that this is not a game meant for children based on the TOS.

There is no way they will catch every kid below the limit who decides to play. All they can do is cull the obviously underage kids from the herd.

Another example: In Playstation Network's TOS, you are not allowed a main account unless you are above the age of majority in your country. This is 18 in most countries, but can be as low as 15 (Iran, I think) and as high as 21. That means that anyone under that legally recognized age is only allowed a sub account. I'm willing to bet there are a lot of people under that age who have sole access to their main account, including having their own bank card attached to it. But because Sony put specific age-restrictive language in their TOS, they are covered from any harm that can be done by a minor using their site.

Let's not be ageist. Age rarely has anything to do with how people act. People of all ages act hugely inappropriately at all times. In fact, I'm saying something inappropriate on another site RIGHT NOW. I multitask like that.

    tl;dr
Kids are going to play. Deal with it or play offline games with friends. Canasta is fun for a small group. Meanwhile, TS is covered and can act appropriately on anyone who is clearly violating their TOS.

  • Only started reading this thread because I thought the title was an invitation to a groovy post-reset party. Imagine my disappointment...
Posted 15 months ago by Oiorpata Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Was reading the thread and it has been said, but I thought I'd add my two cents. Age very infrequently has anything to do with how players on Glitch act. I'm sixteen, only a scant few years above the stated requirement, and I have often felt I am acting with more maturity and poise than the 'adults' on the site.

I certainly feel I'm using more proper grammar ;P
Posted 15 months ago by Liza Throttlebottom Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Gee DaveJohn a perfect example of what we (as in adults) are talking about.  Please expand on your maturity and poise compared to the "adults" on this site.  And your "using more proper grammar" sounds almost like a dangling participle.  You do have a mighty high opinion of yourself.
Posted 15 months ago by xoxJulie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Dangling participle?  The participle in that sentence is "using".  How on earth did you conclude that it was used improperly?
Posted 15 months ago by WindBorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Sobering to me to realize I'm old enough to be DaveJohn's *grandmother* lol
Posted 15 months ago by gimmegames Subscriber! | Permalink
  • xoxJulie,

You should learn grammar before accusing someone else of using the wrong grammar. I see passive participle in DaveJohn's post, but there is nothing dangling. Except for maybe the period at the end. It's gone AWOL.

He's right anyway. Even if he's making grammatical mistakes that most people make, he STILL has better grammar than a lot of adults who play this game. Nobody would know how old he is if he hadn't told us. So you're shaming him for being right?

Listen, we're the ones giggling at the innuendos. Glitch is not a place for adults to be mature. It's a place for adults to recapture childhood and giggle like teenagers at anything that references sex and drugs. Why is it not a place for most children? Because the adults do not want to give up their happy fun place in order to act like responsible adults. We do not want children to see us as we are instead of how we portray ourselves to them. We don't want to be forced to "grow up."

We're not avoiding bad behavior by barring children. We're avoiding liability. That's it.
Posted 15 months ago by Quirk Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yeah I know, it was the tone I really didn't care for.  No not shaming him for being "right', just for being obnoxious.  I know I will get chaffed for writing that, but I'm not 16 and I don't brag I'm so much better than anyone playing Glitch, on any topic.  Guess I'm just one of those adults who doesn't enjoy smart alecks.
Posted 15 months ago by xoxJulie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • DaveJohn - I understand your point and your tone didn't bother me in the least. Neither your grammar, nor the content of your comments would have given away your age. (Except, of course, the comment that stated your age, lol.)
Posted 15 months ago by Audaria Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm an adult who is also a smart alec. So I guess I need to get to work shaming myself. :P
Posted 15 months ago by Quirk Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Truth is, an adult's "inner child" is not quite the same as an actual child. My inner child is 8, with 40+ years of experience ;-).
Posted 15 months ago by gimmegames Subscriber! | Permalink
  • This game definitely brings out my inner child.  The innuendo has me in such giggle fits sometimes.  I don't think we're expected to rein it in and I don't plan to.

I also thought this thread was an invitation to a party - pffffft

  • xoxJulie, while I appreciate the criticism for being constructive I would like to point out that it is impossible to hear a person's tone over a textual exchange.

I would just like to say that I totally agree with Quirk. My point wasn't that I personally am better than adults, just that it's unfair to say that I am worse BECAUSE I am not one. That would not make me worse.

I'd like to believe I am not a smart alec as you called me, but if I were truly a rude person that would prove your point.

I would like to apologize if my words offended, however. I don't want to prove the point that was made.
Posted 15 months ago by Liza Throttlebottom Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Of course you would totally agree with Quirk, so would I if he was defending my position.

I'm replying to you because you aren't 8, or 10 or even 12 years old.  This game is not for young people who would believe getting drunk or naked or using drugs is what adults do behind their backs.  Therefore it would be ok for them to do the same not only in the game but in real life without ever being old enough to realize the consequences.  The proverbial tongue in cheek is what makes this game so much fun for adults without having do to all this explanation I have just given you.

There are people of all ages who believe in tooting their own horns, bragging, denouncing others to show how much better they are then another person.   Putting others in a defensive position is really just a refined why of being a bully.  Your comments are just on the verge of being taken this way.

I then have to consider your age as being old enough to play this game and your capable of discussing differences in a coherent fashion but that does not mean you have the right to slur other people on their grammar or does it prove any point.
Posted 15 months ago by xoxJulie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Ms. Julie. I can't help but feel you are being just as 'mean' to me as I could possibly have been, unintentionally I assure you, to the adults on this site. When all I was doing was trying to assert my own right to play a game when it was questioned by other players.

I hesitate to perpetuate this conversation at all, but I feel the need to get my thoughts across and convince you, though it seems futile, that I'm not some bratty kid.

Maybe I didn't put it perfectly. But you seem to think I'm this egotistical person.

I simply want to play this game and have my right to play recognized regardless of my age.

Any other comments I made were secondary to this.

Once again I apologize if my words offended you, however, I am slowly growing offended by the fact that you rebuffed my previous apology in favor of insisting I'm continuing to be mean. Once again. I'm sorry. That is not my intention. I have nothing against you or any other adult.
Posted 15 months ago by Liza Throttlebottom Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think most of the comments about non-adults in this topic are aimed primarily at kids under 14, who are not supposed to be on this site as per the TOS.
Posted 15 months ago by gimmegames Subscriber! | Permalink
  • True. I read a post that suggested a greater age limit though? Around 17? I just thought it was kind of age discriminatory. Your actual physical age definitely doesn't always indicate much of anything at all.

  • @DaveJohn Everyone has their own level of sensitivity and there is nothing you can do to change that apart from assuring them no offense was meant and apologising if offense was given which you have done.

You can't force someone to accept an apology.  Once an apology has been issued the problem is no longer yours, it's theirs, leave it with them and move on :)
Posted 15 months ago by Reni's Mum Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Wait. Putting people in a defensive position is being a bully? Being ageist is being a bully. If being called out on that makes you defensive, then you have your own issues. If you're reading tone into a post that nobody else is reading, that may very well be your issue as well.

Also, I assure you that the adults who drink and do drugs are doing it in front of children of all ages and not behind their backs. This game would not actually expose most kids to anything they don't already know about. At least not the ones who would actually understand any of the innuendo. Does that mean Glitch is a place for young children? No. Especially not the ones whose parents take a genuine interest in them.

But I promise you, you are already playing with children. Even children under 14. And you don't even notice them.

I see nothing wrong with the current age policy. It's actually pretty strict as far as online gaming policies go. If you want to keep kids 100% out of your social gaming, you're never going to accomplish it. No amount of age verification is going to work. You are better off sticking to one-player or local multi-player games.

In general, the more people are playing a game, the more likely there will be a**holes and beggars. That doesn't change with age. Once a turd, always a turd.
