  • I'm not even sure I understand what you mean here, but If it's what I think it is I'd agree with pascale. -1. I might retract that if you explained a little better and it was different than what i thought you meant though.

  • If you're talking about being able to advertise your own tower on your own home page...uh, maybe.

If you're talking about putting an ad for your tower that would show up on MY home page?  NO.

  • No thank you.

  • Why in the world would I want to advertise MY tower on MY home page?  I already know all about my tower.   Naturally I want to advertise my tower on other people's home pages.   Tastefully done - like google adwords.   Currants only, no credits.
Posted 5 months ago by WalruZ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It'll be credits, not currants.

And not on the website: only in specific (and tasteful!) in-Ur locations with each ad manually reviewed by staff.

This is an idea as old as the company we've been talking about for years now. We hadn't imagined Towers when we came up with it though (we imagined people advertising for groups, or art projects or "religious" reasons) but maybe that too.

    Still, it'll be a while.

  • Hey, I suppose it's a way for you guys to make money, which I'm in favor of, and it's not directly detrimental to gameplay. I'd hope the amount of credits wouldn't be to ridiculously high though, otherwise you'd just have a lot of people spending dick-loads of money to be the most advertised, and ending up as the wal-mart of glitch, with innumerable profits to put back into their business in order to drive down costs and increase their stock to the point where they couldn't be competed with. Crossing my fingers that this doesn't mess up the feel of the game. For the most part though, I trust you guys as a company, and I figure if this idea has been in there since the beginning that you guys have thought it out and have a decent plan. Mostly I'm curious what the pricing will be. Are we talking about something where i pay a certain amount to get a sign, or a scalable amount that states how often people see my sign?

  • It probably won't be big. Or like ads for all those random stores, only probably the ones that are special, I'm guessing. Hopefully not companies, but only players can buy ads.

And like billboards on home streets, or stuff. Or far off small things. Hopefully.

  • Oh, Oh, Oh! So the more i think about this idea the more I'm warming up to it, but I'm still realy curious on the details of how much they will cost in credits and such. What about another feature similar to what WalruZ was originally implying, but instead of on the home page we could have it on our home street or in our tower, but only if we choose to do so. Basically so we could sell our own ad space. Either by using the same ones that would show up elsewhere and getting a currant commission based on the credits TS earns, or by making a deal with another shop-owner/guild-leader/etc. for a certain amount of currants per referral. I like the second option better, but I'd suppose it might cut into the amount of money you'd make on credits, which would understandably take it off the table.

  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
    OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    - INFINITY!!!!

    OH PLEASE GOD NO BILLBOARDS!!!!!!
    OF!ANYTHING!EVER!

There IS NO "tasteful" location for billboards.  There is no "tasteful" content, no matter how carefully reviewed.  This is one of the reasons I left Second Life after just a few visits.

  • Sounds like you're probably gonna have to deal, man. It seems it'd be very profitable for TS and really not all that inconvenient for players. You realize we aren't talking about ads for mcdonalds or something right? We're talking about ads for In-game player shops. If it were ads for mcdonalds or what have you, I might agree, but the more I think about it, this doesn't seem so bad at all. Espescially if it helps a great game like this attain financial success! If this game doesn't make money, it will disappear, Which is something I think alot of people forget. Games like glitch don't come along everyday, tiny speck took a bunch of various risks to make you a great game that's not like anything else, give them a little trust and respect to make the right decisions as far as what to put in the game.

  • Well, even if selling ad space in-game has always been a part of TS's "big picture", I am sorry to hear of it.    As the saying goes, "the proof's in the pudding".  We'll just have to wait and see how it is to have Ur-vertising.

I don't see how politely expressing an opinion on one aspect of the game is showing any disrespect.  Just because I am wary of this idea, does not mean that I don't support TS or the game overall.  I'm here, active participant, a subscriber and buying additional credits on a regular basis.  Mostly I'm in Forum cheering, just not this time.
Posted 5 months ago by Ooola Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Oh, i didn't mean you were disrespecting them, probably didn't use the best choice of words. When I said "Trust and respect" I didn't really mean respect as in don't put them down, i think i actually just chose the total wrong word lol. I basically just meant to expect the best of TS and not the worse. I figure if TS does it, it'll be the best version of whatever it is and even if I don't like it, it'll be the least bad it could be, and will make TS money, which I like.

  • I understood that the currant discussion was focused on player, group and game focused advertising.  The staff post above did not in fact promise that TS would self-impose a limitation on outside advertising, but they did not mention it as likely either.  Most of the advertising in Second Life was for player and group vending.  It was just as obnoxious as any other advertising anywhere else.  Right now, I am fine with the trading channel and marketplace forums because I can completely ignore them if I'm not interested in buying something right now.

I understand TS has a need to make money.  Might I suggest something similar to the "free offers" that I ignored when playing Facebook games.  Make a page available for Advertising that has a link to it from the Menu (like Forums and Encyclopedia).  People pay to advertise at the top of the page.  If a player clicks to view an ad they get some small amount of credits/currants/iMG to encourage traffic.  This means people choose whether to see ads, and people like me have a safe, ad-free game experience, and game balance is completely unaffected.

I do not usually threaten to rage-quit, but as I said, advertising was a big factor in turning me off of Second Life.

  • I would much rather have what stoot said than what you mentioned, TS would not make much money from that, as most people would ignore it, and it wouldn't be viable as something players would buy I don't think. In order to make any money from that kind of model you'd need 3rd party advertising, and if they didn't make any money without it being intrusive it would probably eventually slip into being a little more intrusive and hard to ignore. I'd much rather have a billboards up in various places around Ur that were designed by fellow players and were for in game stuff that I might actually have a use for. After all, you just walk on past it, and if you have no use for what they're selling, you don't click on it, if you do, click it.

  • KhaKhonsu: you should wait and see what you're ragequitting about before you pull the trigger — it's not going to be for a while anyway, so you have some time to enjoy until then :)

And, if it's something gross, we're not going to do it: this is not going to be our biggest money maker (credits and subs work well) and so it would not be worth sacrificing the world's current aesthetic sensibilities for. I don't have trouble imagining things that can fit in well (just like the ads in the subways do now).

Re Second Life: I haven't tried it since around 2004 so I have no idea what it was like more recently, but the main difference is that the people advertising in Second Life were presumably doing so for the purpose of making money. That changes everything.

As for "offers", etc.: that stuff is just too dirty for me, personally.

  • Grupletruge: I appreciate your enthusiasm! It'll be a while before we even put this on the schedule and then it'd be a while till we finalize pricing. So, not even "soon". But, there will be other good stuff in the meantime :)

  • There are already ads in the Glitch subways.  I've always envisioned real player stores there, instead of the generic ones we see now.

If you've never noticed them, then perhaps what TS has in mind isn't going to be worth rage-quitting over.

  • We already have the ability to advertise to other glitches about our towers, auction house items, groups, etc... it's called an update or a note post! I think a better way of putting this would be a list of all the player owned towers somewhere with a tower search capability (on a web page in the encyclopedia or something)... maybe linked next to Giant Favor on the Home Page? Then "subscribers" should be able to pay "currants" and "non subscribers should be able to pay credits" to raise their "tower name" to the top like in a "glitch search results page". This might make everyone happy?. Kingdom of Loathing has an awesome example for stores in the mall. People can search stores and even narrow searches down to items and results will tell them who's store has their item listed and then you can sort by price, store name, etc... Also players can use their in game currency in their store management to raise their store to the top of search results. It usually costs anywhere from 550k+ to get into the top 10. If you want to see examples view screen shots here in my flickr: KOL Store Mechanics

  • +1 for player to player advertising because I don't think our towers will work very well unless we have a way of advertising to each other.

+1 for TS selling ad space to 3rd parties if that helps them become a success story because I love Glitch and I know that the ONLY was to keep it going is for it to make money for TS.

I also know that the more successful TS is with Glitch, the more likely it is that there will be other games like Glitch coming along soon. I would love to see TS become so wildly profitable that Glitch-like games spring up everywhere.

The alternative is that TS limps along, trying to stay in the black by selling credits. In that case, Ur and our options within it will grow more slowly and few, if any, other game developers will imitate Glitch. I think that would be a real shame.

  • On a side note, I think it would be cool if Glitch allowed us to connect our profiles to Google AdSense like Blogger.com so we can earn revenue from helping promote Glitch and Tiny Spec. It wouldn't be such a bad idea for Tiny Spec to implement Google Ads for "non-subscribers" (Subscribe to get rid of ads) on Web site pages as well with the amount of traffic Glitch and Tiny Spec Receives Glitch stands to receive a good portion of revenue from impressions alone!

  • Seriously... I think game related ads are the best.   When I took over/started the paper, it was one of the first things I wanted to do - create a classified ads page for groups, services, etc. We've had ads since the first issue and I think they are adorable, personally.  So much so that I've put them on the main page.

The ads that have been designed by Soupie and le beebs are very cute, as are the ones that have been submitted to me by other players.  They are relevant because they support other players in a game that we love; it's not like we're advertising for goods and services outside of Glitch.

I am personally very supportive of this idea.  I've always found the subway ads amusing and I have no doubt TS will figure out how to implement this idea in a tasteful and equally amusing way.

  • I love the ads in the subways, always did, and always imagined fanta advertising in glitch like in the crabato juice can, a little fanta logo on it :D, even if ads stays inside glitch I'm cool anyway, because I know you guys will do it well, like you did in subway train. Anyway, I wish in the long long future that we could have our own sugar water brand etc, or at least be able to advertise on a special crabato juice. That would be cool for sure.

  • Make our own juices, build our own brand, choose what benefits it gives to glitches, etc...

  • Ads inside the game itself, say in the subway and occasional billboards....yes. Outside advertising, banner ads etc. to that id say no. But in any case it hasn't happened yet, so i'll have to wait and see:)
