fireflies; possibly the most annoying?

and this isn't about the fact that everyone and their pet dog is out hunting them right now ;)

the energy drain is enourmous, and the art of getting 7 in one go (knowing that any you already have will break for freedom the moment you open the jar) is driving me crazy!1 Am I that bad really, or is everyone else developing bald patches with this too?

  • Before the crazy hunting, it was the easiest thing to do ever. Easier than catching a flying chicken.

But you really shouldn't be catching them when it's unreasonable to use that much energy (and if you do it right you'll only lose like 50 energy)... I'm level 27 and I still don't need to get fireflies, and I have 800 energy!

  • A glitch's gotta do what a glitch's gotta do for his pumpkins...

Jumping in the swarm before opening the jar makes it easier though, you should try that. The jar is nearer to them then and it won't take so lang for them to come.

  • Will we be able to catch the fireflies and light the pumpkin after Zille-o-ween?

  • Yeah, I'd caught several jars before with no problems. But now I've experienced the true frustration of firefly catching. Even in my own home if I open a jar with any in it I'll probably end up with less. They seem to like flying away from the jar, I thought the whistle was supposed to attract them? They even fly to the upper floors to get away from me D: And I can easily chomp through my 800 energy trying to catch the darn things.

The method that seems to work well for me is to wait until they've been respawned so there are more (or release several partial full jars, though they might not stay in a nice clump as with a respawn), then as mentioned jump and open your jar, an empty jar. And I do this in my house, I dread to think of how much hair-pulling I'd be doing trying to catch them outside.

  • I agree with you, it's aggravating!  I have only done it a couple of times and this last time was so frustrating!  But I wanted to get a light for my second jackolantern, so it was worth it.  :)

  • I know Blockmaking, where any odd number of fireflies in jars can be applied to making Bricks.  Bricks require five fireflies from any jar in your possession.  So I have no problem at all with partial jars of fireflies.  Maybe learn Blockmaking if it's a problem.

The annoyance of Fireflies being turned into a seasonal quest item is offset some by the Jellisac coming out of the pumpkins because Jellisac is a component of Blockmaker fuel.

  • I've always had trouble with this even in Beta.  When I jump into the swarm, the flies below the jar stay below the jar.  If I don't jump in, the flies refuse to come down to the jar but those in do escape and don't come back.  This is why I quit trying to make crystals.  I have been lucky to light 7 pumpkins somehow.  I also have some partially filled jars.  If I ever get them full I may try to make crystals.
