  • *sigh I tried to play Monkey Quest. It made me sad. I kept trying to squeeze the other monkeys and they wouldn't cough up bananas. Cheeky bastiges!

And tonight, we were talking about our vacation to OBX next week. I said, "Keep in mind boys, while we're there you'll still have chores to do. It's not like a hotel. We'll have to clean up, do dishes, scrape barnacles, make crystals."

    Silence. Stare.

"Mom!! We're going to the BEACH not to Glitch!"

  • @NutMeg -- I refuse to emotional invest in other games right now. I've disconnected from just about every other game outside of puzzle games. I need those to combat sheer boredom and honestly, they are a bit mindless once you understand the patterns.

It keeps me out of trouble. Off the forums. Oh...yeah. I could do that instead of being a dastardly pot stirrer.....

  • Lmao the 12th. Well at least I'll get some game time in before Harry Potter on the 14th (midnight showing, duh).

  • I don't mean to be a jerk about this (after all, I am checking this thread for info about when I can again begin wasting my time on Glitch just like everyone else), but I get sad when I read about people looking for ways to throw their time in a hole.

It's unlikely that on our deathbed, any of us will think "Man, I wish I'd spent more time playing FreeCell/Minesweeper/etc.!".

I'd suggest going to the library and picking up a book.  It's portable, engaging, keeps your brain ticking over instead of dulling it, and then when you're done, you can have interesting conversations with other humans about what you thought about it.

Or if books aren't your thing, walk to the library...then turn around and walk home.  It's good for you, and who knows, you might run into something or someone that makes you think.

Again, I'm obviously as addicted to mindless grind as the rest of us, but when you get reprieve like this, it's kinda sad to be consciously looking for a way to race towards death without getting anything out of it.

  • Biff, I completely agree with you. But the thing is, I spend SO MUCH time experiencing real life that I really want to enjoy the downtime I have, and right now that would be playing Glitch. Otherwise I fret because I'm not enjoying the downtime.

I work a 40-hour/week job helping people move past their problems. I run an active horror movie Meetup group with a friend. And I help run a mental health professionals group. I live within half a mile of about 7 friends and I see at least 3 of them weekly. My friend also moved in next door to me and I see her almost daily when we go out and enjoy the town, lmao. I enjoy life as much as possible. [In Damian from Mean Girls fashion] BUT I WANT MY GLITCH BACK. I WANT MY GLITCH BACK.

EDIT: And believe me, if I had a boyfriend I'd be all up on that, too. AND STILL WANTING MY GLITCH.

  • i agree with biff- i have gotten sucked into this game, and i wish i hadn't. i've given myself to the reset, but then i need to un-suck. i suppose this is a philosophical conversation for another thread, but i have So Many Hobbies taht get un-hobbied when glitch is open, and even a social life that gets un-social. it all goes back ot that controversial addiction thread weeks ago. it's not glitch's fault, it's mine. books don't get read, photos don't get made, and i find myself playing more nintendo than usual when the game is off.

this is NO insult to glitch, or to other glitchers- it's a personal problem and personal observation.
Posted 18 months ago by greenkozi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Biff -- Perhaps you view it as a waste of time, but not all of us view it that way. Quite frankly, I don't invest my time in things I find useless or wasteful. I choose my investment of my most precious resource (time) very carefully.

As far as conversation - I am a human. I know there are other humans here. I'm conversing with them - albeit electronically - but that's no less conversational. The mode of delivery of the messages exchanged happens to be something other than verbal.

I don't need a preacher or a confessor or anyone else reminding me of how to spend my time. I appreciate the sentiment, but no one in my family is suffering. My work isn't suffering. My physical world life isn't suffering. This is my escape. My guilty pleasure. And I'm happy for the moments I spend here.

I won't feel guilty about that - despite any admonishment from anyone about how he/she views I should be better spending my time.

  • hmm i guess i should rephrase- i agree with biff about what *i* should be doing, not what *others* should be doing. i've noticed a change in *my* life that i believe is negative.

glitch came at an opportune time to suck me in. i quit my job and career of 8 years due to extreme burnout, for funemployment. then came baseball season, then glitch. glitch fits right into listening to the games on the radio. but... it also can expand to fill many many hours that could be doing other things, especially outdoor activities that i LOVE doing.

so yeah, i agree with biff about being sad about what *i'm* doing. i pass no judgemnet at all on anyone else- that woudl be throwing some major stones, right, since i'm sitting here hitting refresh, too :)

  • Biff,

I think I understand what you're trying to say, but it's a bit offensive. I've been an avid reader my whole life, so it's insulting to insinuate I've not done so. I've read so many books that I'm ready for something new- I want something I can engage with people with, something that moves and changes with me, not a book that is always the same no matter what.

I live in a small town with not much to do. I work, and have a 4 year old. I have PLENTY of real life. Sometimes I want an escape. I'm currently dealing with an illness that makes it so I can't get out of the house socially too often. I go to work and come home. I've made so many amazing friends in this game, and that is one way I have to have "interesting conversations with other humans about what I think" about  things.  I *do* have a life- it's just a mostly simple home life. I also like to do art, and I absolutely love to do pinup modeling.

So, for you, this may be something to do that you "get nothing out of" in the grand scheme of things-but not for a lot of us. It makes me sad that you don't see this as a way of social interaction.

So, yeah, it may be sad to you that I'm waiting for the game to open, but this weekend I've been bedridden thanks to a surgery needed and doctors visits. So I needed something to do while everyone else was at barbecues.

    I'll stop venting now.

  • I agree with Biff, I really should be doing other things, but I have a lot of trouble tearing myself away from my computer, or the Glitch home page.
Posted 18 months ago by KitkatCat Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yea, I'd have to say, though I see your point, Biff, it really depends on the situation. If someone really does do what you're saying, then yes, it can be negative (as some have mentioned it has become for them). And I do understand you're not trying to offend anyone with the statement you made. I felt it was clearly explained.

I totally understand that viewpoint, because there was a game that did that for me for a couple of years. I used it as a crutch to get away from some terrible things happening in life and got sucked in more than I meant. Though I don't regret the time I spent, and I think it did end up helping me immensely, especially one of the dear friends I made from that venture, I do realize I probably played waaaay too much and sacrificed other hobbies I love as a result- which was negative. Since then I've gone back to what I played before the issues that drove me to it, which is occasionally.

Overall, I'm not a super social person, though I like a moderate amount of socialization and socialization through internet means is easier for me. Socializing is taxing for me, especially if I've been at work all day around my coworkers (fortunately not a ton of public traffic), and I need a lot of time to recharge (just think of a Sims social meter) and be ready to meet people face to face again.

Lately I have been more in the mood to play a little Glitch in the evening- I've missed a few tests entirely as of late as well due to some good and bad things happening in RL. I don't have an itch to play it all the time, just sometimes for an hour or so to get my mind off of some things for a bit. I see my friends regularly on weekends when things in my family life are not so hectic, and I've returned to my love of reading and sewing (working on a quilt at the moment). I have so many interests though, so many art projects, crocheting, sewing, and whatnot, that I kind of cycle through them- various games being one of those things I cycle through periodically. It doesn't mean I sacrifice them for the sake of a less stimulating game, but that they aren't on my interest radar right now. And won't be, until I am inspired to do something with them.

  • I should clarify that I was specifically referring to the desire to kill time with games that aren't as good as Glitch during the downtime.  I regard the closings as an opportunity to do more productive things, for if the game were up, I'd be here with the rest of you loons like a lab rat uncontrollably hitting the pleasure bar in lieu of food.

Still, I suppose what I said in part applies to Glitch as well.  I think as long as you're using it as a cool-down period for your brain, that's cool.  Everyone should be so lucky as to have time for the equivalent of daydreaming in a hammock.

But I imagine many of us have felt that twinge of shame as when you initially decided to drop in for a couple hours to do just that One Thing and now it's unexpectedly dark (or light) and the dishes still aren't done and that report is still due on your boss'/professor's desk tomorrow.

When I catch myself thinking "Well, I should be on the road by 3, but my skill ends at 3:15, so maybe I could...", that's when I know to back slowly away from the computer and reprioritize.

In that same sense, if I catch myself trying to burn time to get to some future hour, it's time to check my head and figure out something (relatively) useful to do.  It could be watching that movie I've always wanted to see that I'm sure no friends or family are into (again, the library rocks for this purpose and is cheaper than HBO or NetFlix) or answering a thoughtful email to a friend with a little more than 140 characters of content or, if my brain is insistent on gaming, a little Dance Dance Revolution so that I can at least work up a sweat while I play that mindless game I'm craving.

Anyway, I'm not judging or lecturing (hey, I'm right here with you), but offering food for thought when it comes to "killing time".  We've all got a very limited amount of that, and there's more stuff in this world than you could possibly cram into your brain.  And lots of it is real good.

  • Have to say, I don't often get cranky, but this is one time I feel a little bit of that..  Glitch, at the moment, is my decompression chamber from my rl job, which is extremely fast paced and mentally demanding.  It's my "job antidote" of choice and I do not feel guilty about playing for whatever amount of time I choose to spend in the game.  I still take care of all of my rl, non-work related responsibilities.  If I felt guilty or neglectful in that regard then I hope I would not be playing in lieu of same.  No doubt, people play this game for a variety of reasons and each to their own purpose.  How can anyone presume to know one iota about anything any one of us of has done (or not), read (or not) or taken the opportunity to explore (or not)?  Sorry BB, but your post was presumptuous and saying "hey, I'm right here with you" does not change that.  Not for me anyway..  Just sayin..

  • So this is Rascalmom really (bloody work has my laptop hostage so I've borrowed hubby's machine): As you who know me know, yeah, I play a lot right now. But also, I work full-time and still manage to do fun stuff with family as well as therapy with the autistic kiddo. What I don't do is sleep overmuch (but then I really don't do that well anyway). This part of the thread about the time spent interests me. Yeah, sometimes I struggle with it, but then I need the escape! However, when I think I'm spending a lot of Glitch time, I also think: Meh, it's for a few weeks/a couple months. I know once it's live I'll play it a fair bit right away but then it will simmer down when I know it's not going away and take its rightful place among other hobbies. I also tend to get obsessed with a particular hobby for a few months then let it simmer (knitting, beading, really fancy paint by numbers things made for grownups, etc.). Anyway, just thought I'd throw in my two cents. OH! And I have really, really made some freakin' awesome friends in here. (As well, I know many, many folks who are physically/emotionally disabled who find this a wonderful way to get out in the world when they can't do so in other ways). Really intriguing reading all of your responses. I love the thoughtful discourse we can get into in these forums!

    Anywho...now um...open please? :D

  • I completely understand what Biff is saying.  I don't think its offensive at all.  Glitch is an escape for many people, including myself.  My daily schedules goes something like this: wake up at 6:00am, shower, take my boyfriend to work, go straight to chemistry class from 7:40am - 1:00pm, then go straight to work afterwords to take care of twin boys who are 1.5 years old, then come home and cook/clean, plus I have a Bengal cat and while I love her dearly Bengals require a great amount of attention and "playtime" (she is one).

Anyways, no matter what your escape is, whether it is Glitch, or reading, knitting, watching tv, exercising, drinking, partying, dancing, singing, etc, it is ALWAYS a good idea to practice moderation.  That's not meant to be offensive to anyone or suggest than anyone here does not practice moderation, just like Biff said, simply food for thought.

EDIT:  Wanted to add that I'm not preaching, I just wanted to add my 2 cents to the thread.

  • Folks, whether Biff is right about you or not I hope no one feels obligated to explain (or the need to defend) why you enjoy playing Glitch. Logging in (we all have to do this to get here), clicking on Forums and selecting the Open Date/Time thread just to say, "Don't want to be here too much" is rude in my opinion (and I am entitled to this opinion).

I agree that healthy people should pursue balanced lives. The people I like most in Glitch are loving people with connections to their families and friends in RL.  So if you are a normally healthy, well-adjusted person who just prefers Glitch over other vegging out... and you're not harming anyone (self, family, career, friends) come back to Glitch guilt free. This is the thread to find out WHEN.
Posted 18 months ago by Spellbound Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'M GOING TO INTERPRET THAT AS TODAY.

Omg. I'm going to eat chocolate out of anxiety. :P
Posted 18 months ago by Cerulean Subscriber! | Permalink
  • And Spellbound, I don't always consider myself well-adjusted but Glitch helps me get away from it. To be honest, I've been rather depressed for several weeks now to the point where I've felt self-injurious (note, this is completely different from suicidal ideation), though I haven't done anything to harm myself except smoke a couple of cigarettes and eat my feelings. But Glitch helps me get away from all of that sometimes, and I think that's fair. We've discussed how Glitch may be used as a coping mechanism in other threads, and it's not unhealthy to do it the way I have been (playing here and there while focusing on "real life" for most of the rest of the time, rather than letting the game envelope your life).
Posted 18 months ago by Cerulean Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm not a doctor in real life, but I play one online.

And as an online doctor of the Glitch community, I prescribe a good dose of "Please tell us when the game will open" for both the Glitch Addicts at the Glitchodone Clinic as well as for the Devs - so that they can sleep better at night! Goodness knows it must keep them up every night - all that programming and creative development... day in and day out... forced to frolic alone in the vast wastelands of Choru with only the JuJu to chase after... no friends to help revive the wildlife after a Rook attack... no 30 person conga lines at the Dev parties!!! And knowing that a hoard of friends are hovering over their "Enter to Play" buttons, ready to play with all the amazing things the Devs are creating!

I'm from Oklahoma, so I'm hoping it will be "Sooner" than later!
