Herb Garden Shocker

I spent some time in the herb gardens this am,tended, watered, harvested, shucked, and planted, when I left most (but not all) plots had herbs in various stages of growth, plus a few in full bloom,it looked beautiful!
Well, I just went to the Jethi Herb garden, and all but a few seedlings were harvested, some herbs were simply discarded and lying on the ground, and none of the plots were cleared, let alone replanted ~frankly, that stinks and really pisses me off! ;(

  • I think there are lots of different ways to play the game.

I have not yet used a herb garden but once, because the plots I have seen have been all full. So your leaving a full, albeit tidy garden would be a deterrent to my trying things out.

Leaving some empty plots seems like a good thing to me.

Leaving herbs for others to pick up seems like a good thing to me.

I do have a tendency to hoe after I harvest in a community garden, but I don't think that's all that big a deal either way.

So yeah, there are different possible perspectives here.

  • Some people are just bloody ruthless.

  • I think the most important thing about a game like this is to not let stuff like that shock or upset you. Like clare said, the person left herbs, which seems quite thoughtful, it's not like they took all and ran. Everybody has a different way of playing and some players deem empty plots as a good thing since it gives the next person the opportunity to plant whatever they want.

  • Taking all that fit in the bag and just dumping the others on the ground (instead of leaving them in their plot for others to pick) is a rude and selfish act, just to cause grief.
The very least they can do is clear up their mess, and take only what they need,or can carry and leave the rest, and not pick them and dump them on the ground.
If this is acceptable game play, then I really hope we get the tools to 'counter' that type of play, such as planters we can buy and set up in our homes. Then the scroungers can do their thing and I mine.

And I did leave empty plots, however someone may have come in after me and planted them up.
I replace what I take, unless all the plots are empty, and then I plant a few more.

  • Combine Clare and Frankenpaula's replies to make this: there are many possible ways for people to use the community gardens, and you'll never see a united front here. So, you can't allow this to upset you, or you'll end up in tears, fighting windmills. Look in the other threads- there are actually people who think it's rude to replace what you take. I don't understand their reasoning, but that's what they think. And I don't understand yours, either.

Because, what's so selfish and rude about leaving a virtual plant on the ground? It doesn't die, rot, or get any less useful than if it were in the ground. It doesn't destroy the plot.

At worst, it's just not aesthetically pleasing, but is that a reason to get upset?

This isn't a real garden. The same principles don't apply. The resources aren't finite, so the waste isn't significant. Sure, you can calculate a strategy that would be optimal for everyone in the long run, but you could never apply it, because what is always best for everyone is not always best for the individual at a given time. And since, again, this is a game with infinite resources...

You're never going to win this argument. Not you, not anyone else who says there's a 'right' way to use the gardens. It's a waste of time and anxiety.

  • Perhaps the person ran out of energy or had to log out of the game and wasn't able to finish what they started.  Many times I have to log out right in the middle of something important for RL.  We aren't sure WHAT their reasons are so its not fair to judge or ridicule.

  • Scilly, I know how frustrating that can be. I have encountered that many times. I just have to remind myself that maybe the person that picked all the herbs intended to hoe the garden and replant, but their hoe broke, or they forgot it in their house?  In this case, it seems like they felt so bad that they could not replant that they just left some herbs.

Or like Laurali said, maybe they crashed, got caught at work, ran out of energy, etc.

  • I know it doesn't look pretty with discarded plants left on the ground but maybe someone harvested and replanted but did not need the herbs so they left them for others to take.

  • Wow, sillygirl, "rude & selfish"?? How do you come to that conclusion, when someone left produce for others to use? I agree with Glitchzen, that was what I was thinking as I read: they needed to plant something, so picked the flowers to plant their herb, then instead of "selfishly" keeping an herb they didn't need, they left it for someone else who could use it.
Maybe if we could stand the flowers up, or leave them in a vase, it wouldn't look messy, and leave the impression of being "discarded". I've put flowers under my trees at my house, but they do lie down, which doesnt look quite as nice. But its not something to get upset about, because you really don't know what was in that person's mind.

  • I actually think the herbs and flowers laying on the ground look beautiful how they are, but thats just my opinion

  • I am sure community means a little different to everyone so I can't see why someone is upset about how they view community gardens, way too many posts on this subject.

  • Aside: I would definitely like some windmills in this game. And I would like to be able to tilt at them.

  • Just then they came in sight of thirty or forty windmills that rise from that plain. And no sooner did Don Quixote see them that he said to his squire, "Fortune is guiding our affairs better than we ourselves could have wished. Do you see over yonder, friend Sancho, thirty or forty hulking giants? I intend to do battle with them and slay them. With their spoils we shall begin to be rich for this is a righteous war and the removal of so foul a brood from off the face of the earth is a service God will bless."

    "What giants?" asked Sancho Panza.

"Those you see over there," replied his master, "with their long arms. Some of them have arms well nigh two leagues in length."

"Take care, sir," cried Sancho. "Those over there are not giants but windmills. Those things that seem to be their arms are sails which, when they are whirled around by the wind, turn the millstone."

  • Since we can own a garden, I don't see the point to set rules on what should or should not be done in a community garden, specially because everybody is at a different level, and some new users may not know how to do something or have the necessary tools, so I think that community spaces are a place to experiment, it doesn't have to be "perfect".

  • Sorry for off-topic, but... @Skqid - Don Quixote didn't see so well, as we all know.  Clearly he was mistaken, as there were only 11 giants.

  • Natalia and Phochai:  It is important to try to get your ideas about the community gardens heard because we are actually using them (or not using them in these circumstances) and so it can be frustrated when community resources are abused
