piggy underpopulation problem

what happened to all the piggies? Is everyone hog-tying them off the streets for their own gardens? Can't we leave some for everyone to enjoy? I hatched a new pig in Pakodi Prim today and within an hour it was gone, bringing all of Andra down to 7 piggies. Do we need a piggy replenishment society?

  • I have seen at least 3 pigs spawn in front of me out of nothing.  It happens after capturing another pig.  A new one appears sometimes.
Posted 14 months ago by Friend Subscriber! | Permalink
  • And Kaessa had "seen" new piggies spontaneously appear out of thin air immediately after donating a hogtied one at a shrine.  This has since been disproven by moi.

So again, empirical evidence or it's just conjecture.

  • Already posted by staff that there is for a different reason and only in certain areas.

The reason most likely so that even if someone went on a pignapping spreed to reduce pigs to 0, we would still have a few bare minimum pigs around.

    --
Why are people putting more pigs in Groddle of all areas if it has this bare minimum, leave some streets where people can steal all the pigs they want, just educate them about the respawning in those specific areas.

  • It's a bit insulting to be called a liar and a troll for merely sharing my experience.  I am positive these pigs were not released by other people and did in fact spawn.  Yeeesh.
Posted 14 months ago by Friend Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Bluigi, hence why I said prove it outside of Groddle.  The reason being that I already have shown it does not happen and a dev confirmed as much.
Posted 14 months ago by Joojoo Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Friend: It's equally insulting to have to read someone post with certainty something that they have not tested themselves and that goes against what you've tested not to be the case...
Posted 14 months ago by Joojoo Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Hey bud, you capture a few hundred pigs, make xp leaderboad, then we'll talk about testing..
Posted 14 months ago by Friend Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think the proper response would be to test which areas CANNOT be depopulated, and direct would-be pignappers there.

Because it's perfectly clear that you cannot clear some of them.

  • Your elitist comment notwithstanding, I don't see how rushing to level 48 in a couple of weeks makes you any more of an expert on the hidden game mechanics of Glitch than I or anyone else posting on this thread.  If you didn't write the code yourself, or were exposed to it, you have only your own experiments to base things on.  What I hear from you are statements of certainty without actually showing what tests you conducted that prove them to be right.  I, however, did perform a test, albeit a very small and rudimentary one.  So take your "I'm higher level than you" attitude somewhere else.

  • From what I hear, piggies won't eat grain from the ground anymore...

  • @Friend, when I said the word 'troll', you had just said 'so why did you reply my post' or something to that effect as a one-liner, no relation to the thread and arguably ad hominem.  you obviously changed it afterwards.  be aware of what you're saying before you click reply.

  • I speak the truth only.  Check what I said up above.

  • Piggies will eat food off the ground but starve anyway.  I had that happen in my yard.  You have to hand-feed or use a feeder to keep them alive.  I don't know about trees as mine are penned.

  • That's great that you truly say I 'should not reply to this thread.'  I agree.  Have fun.

  • Avoid needless angst: assume anything you leave in a public place (trees, pigs, butterflies, piles of diamonds, engineering blocks) can and will be taken / stolen / donated / auctioned / destroyed / ground up into meat pies / violated unspeakably / replaced with a tree you don't like.

I'm not doing any of the 'stealing', but I am also unsurprised when it happens. The game encourages interaction with things on the street, and some of the potential interaction is destructive.

  • Time for a dev to say, "yes pigs can respawn sometimes to maintain pig populations on main streets."  Then lock this thread.

Btw, I just saw a pig spawn after I captured one in Rekan Flux.

  • I heart the piggies. I'm not a big repopulator, but I do try to add a piggy to the pigless or lonely pig streets. And, yes, I know that that little piggy will probably be kidnapped, but I do hope he enjoys a few good pettings and nibblings before that happens.

The way I see it... some folks like making eggs, hatching piggies, and/or repopulating Ur. Some folks like pignapping. The beauty of this conflict is that we all need each other. Without the repopulators, where would the pignappers find pigs? Without the pignappers, Ur would be overpopulated and the piggies would be sad. Nobody wants sad piggies!

The trick is to find a bit of harmony. Like, for example, if some of the more active kidnappers would not take the last piggie or two on a street and if some of the more active populators would not get upset seeing pignappers on a fairly crowded street. No set "rule" of course, but just common courtesy for the good of Ur.

  • @Friend: you speak with certainty about unsubstantiated things that are directly in contrast with what has already been proven in this thread.  That, by definition, is a troll.  If this thread gets locked it's because of your unyielding desire to spread untruths.  Why are you even dedicating so much time to a thread you were so baffled had gotten this long?  Shouldn't you be out dumping massive amounts of hogtied piggies into shrines in your race to hit the level cap before the end of the first month?

  • Don't let your love of piggies blind you.  AND DON'T KEEP CALLING ME A LIAR.  You sir are the one who is mistaken.
Posted 14 months ago by Friend Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The only thing "proven" in this thread was that pigs didn't respawn on one street in Bortola. Perfectly reasonable test that just needs more streets added.

And there was information about them not respawning automatically just from donations, which is reasonable and fitting for known data.

Pig respawns do happen and were confirmed by staff as you see in second part of given quote; but they are random.
Posted 14 months ago by Shalcker Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I have visual evidence that piggies do not respawn.  It's in the thread if you cared enough to look.

You have hearsay to back up your claims.

If you want to say things like "I believe they do spawn" or "I"m not certain of it, but I thought I saw one respawn" then I'd have no issue with your statements.  But claiming something is a fact and not having anything concrete on which to base that on is irresponsible.  You have NO evidence that what you're saying is true.  ZERO.  So, I will keep calling you out on that.  If you want to take that as being called a liar.  Go for it.
Posted 14 months ago by Joojoo Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Shalcker, kevbob said that "things" randomly respawn in some areas.  He did not specifically reference animals, and I mentioned a handful of items that do, in fact, respawn in certain areas.  So it is not 100% accurate to say that he confirmed pig respawns.
Posted 14 months ago by Joojoo Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Joojoo, you are wrong.  Get over it.  I've seen pigs spawn with my own eyes many times as I said.  If that is not evidence, then you should try capturing many pigs to see if you can duplicate this phenomenon.  I'm willing to bet I have captured more pigs on more streets than you in reaching the conclusion that YES PIGS CAN RESPAWN.
Posted 14 months ago by Friend Subscriber! | Permalink
  • General piggy respawns were not specifically confirmed or denied. The only thing about piggy respawns that was confirmed, was that they do not respawn after being donated. That is not the same as not respawning anywhere.

I would not be surprised if they do respawn in some places (like where they were placed after reset by TS) and can fall under the "some things randomly spawn" line. I also would not be surprised to find out that the majority do not respawn, especially in outlying regions from Groddle.

It's really silly to keep arguing about it. Staff would have to post in here (or in some official medium) on each point specifically before I'd consider any player observations as fact (since earlier in the thread it was shown that some observations just happened to coincide with other things quite often).

  • A couple of points here. It is true that sometimes piggies are born without the help of Glitchen trying to maintain the public piggy population. But it sounds like despite both their efforts and those of the Giants, the tragedy of the commons is alive and well in Ur. We're looking into this.

In the mean time though, come on! The forums aren't a place for "gotchas!" and accusations - it distracts from the very real issue being discussed and doesn't add anything to the conversation. But, thank you for paying such close attention to the game ecosystem, it is a work in progress.

  • I wish I had read the forums more when I was doing all my quests, I did the hogtie piggies quest and, being excited to own new piggies, brought them home.  I didn't know that was pig theft and they wouldn't respawn in the streets.  I also, mistakenly, thought I could breed the ones I brought home.  =(

I'm so sorry, I just didn't know.  Also you curry favour with the giants if you throw them in the shrines, I didn't know that was wrong either until I read the forums more.  I feel really terrible now.  =(

  • MisoGeorge: You shouldn't feel bad at all or consider it pig theft (they are just out there in the public). You didn't do anything wrong.

People just try really hard to get the populations up, and usually it's only the donation and/or selling to vendors that gets them down because that means there are no piggies for people to use. When populations get low, it gets frustrating to put some pigs out just to see them all gone within a few minutes.

Taking them home and taking care of them is awesome, especially when you get that quest (I took two of mine for that quest home!). People would be glad to know the piggies they made were continuing to be beneficial to someone.

At any rate, you can no longer donate or sell piggies to vendors, so that should fix the population imbalance a lot.
Posted 14 months ago by Little Miss Giggles Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Hog-tied piggies can still be auctioned?  Darn.

@Miso - people are not mad at folks who bring piggies home.  Don't worry.  It was the folks who vendored piggies or who threw them into shrines en masse who annoyed a lot of people.  That's cause they were taking piggies which other (very nice) people raised and released on public streets, especially the streets which don't respawn piggies.

For example, I released 10 piggies on Lavu Lane, because there hadn't been any piggies there at all.  There were butterflies, chickens but not a single piggy.  Unfortunately, the very next day, all my piggies were gone.

  • Hooray! Thank you so much! i can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm really glad that something like this was nerfed.

As for the auctions, once people start realizing that they can't donate or vendor sell them I imagine the numbers actually buying (and thus also the price) will go down a lot. Then you'll only have people buying them to repopulate or put in their back yards, which seems perfectly fine :)

(Uh... what is this 'dead piggy' that I see an auction space for... ? Perhaps something old that wasn't removed?)
Posted 14 months ago by Sunburst Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I've been reading quite a bit of this thread to attempt to understand this issue.  Here's the gist I'm getting:

Piggies are stolen from underpopulated streets often.  Developing players benefit from stealing public piggies for their homes (food) or money.  Piggies also go for a decent amount at Auctions.

This seems like an economic issue - lack of supply breeds demand, hence the higher selling price on the auctions.  If a handful of breeders were to flood the auctions with piggies, wouldn't that bring the price down and discourage piggy theft?  The profit wouldn't be worth the effort, in other words.

Of course, we can work on adding more piggies to the public space as often as possible as well for the time being, but I assume a more economics-focused solution, coupled with knocking out the ability to donate/sell back to vendors, would reverse the widespread shortage we're seeing right now.

  • Heads up, folks.  I've been finding piggies abandoned on islands with no trees and on roofs.
Posted 14 months ago by Pming Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Jenothy, it's a non-issue at this point, thanks to the fix, but the central issue was that with the exception of some streets that were populated by GOD at the beginning of time, the piggies you saw on the streets were produced by other players.  This involved a cost incurred by said player.  The value of those piggies, when grown to adulthood was rather high.  So with pig bait being sold for a paltry 25c, it was a lucrative business to steal them and then sell them off for a quick and dirty profit.  Add to that the fact that they fetched a nice favor value when dumped in a shrine and you have an epidemic on your hands.  Piggies being nabbed faster (and cheaper) than they can be added to the population.  Not to mention the fact that when I (and others like me) noticed there were people profiteering from our hard work, we stopped handing them free profits, so the piggy population suffered even more.  That's the background for why this debate took place.
Posted 14 months ago by Joojoo Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Pming, as in real life, there are some whose very existence centers around being disruptive and spiteful (some of them have even posted in this thread *cough*).  We can't control that.  But at least they're no longer profiteering from the capture of our piggies.
Posted 14 months ago by Joojoo Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Just to reassure - I ain't really upset.  I wasn't really upset even when my 10 piggies were stolen.  =)

The piggy abandonments should drop dramatically once the pig-nappers' stocks are gone.  I've been leaving notes all over the place on how to feed piggies (by just dropping veggies near them) and adopting them cause they need trees.

Hopefully this will make it easier for newcomers to start their piggy farms.
Posted 14 months ago by Pming Subscriber! | Permalink
  • And we should all carry a couple of piggie baits so we can move pigs from locations where they cannot survive (a floating island for example) to a place more pig-friendly.

I have absolutely no issue with a homeowner taking a piggy off the street to love and care for in the comfort of their home. A happy piggy helps keep Ur strong.
