grumble grumble learning times, partial skills, etc.

So, because I am a bear of little brain, I decided to click on the next skills I'd like to learn, so that they'd be at the top of the "skills you can learn now" pile. One at a time. This, now this, now this,.... Six of them are things I wanted to keep my eye on.

And whoops! The learning time for all of them increased with this exercise.

Of course. I mean, I get why that happens, so that people don't thwart the system of increasing learning times by sneaking up on the skills or something, and frequently changing the skill they're learning. But somehow it feels like it's not working right, that maybe if I learned only a wee tiny bit, it shouldn't count against me?

(I mean, no big deal for ME and now... I'm just talking about how this works. It feels a bit off.)

  • ! I never even noticed that! I've switched back and forth a number of times, usually because I changed my mind about what to learn next. I didn't notice that it was costing me in time!

  • Yeah. I just noticed that for myself just now. *grumbles*

  • I'm not sure I know what you're saying?

My skills haven't had time added, and I switch 'em up all the time.
Like, for example, I learn some overnight for multiple nights instead of all in one go, so I don't get as bored during play time.

    Edit:
I re-read it, maybe this means that the added percentages show up when you first start a skill, instead of when you receive it?

  • I clicked onto six skills for just a moment, to put them up at the top of the possible skills. The time to learn each one increased by about 25%.

E.g., Gardening II went from about 1.5 hours to 2 hours, and Herdkeeping went from about 4 hours to about 5 hours.

(Yes, my math is off. I don't remember the exact times. Those are ballpark.)

  • So essentially you hit your skill limit and they're going up now?

I am still possibly a bit confused, did ONLY the ones you started go up, or did all of them go up? I thought you meant only the ones you had already started had time added.

  • Not long ago people were exploiting the fact that the learning time only went up when you finished learning a skill (sorry I can't find the thread where it was explained).

Now it looks like this was changed, so time goes up when you start learning a skill. If this is it, it makes sense. But of course I'm not sure, just guessing.

  • The ones you start up are locked in when you start them.  Everything else (that you haven't started) gets the penalties. Didn't we figure this out last test when someone posted the "leave 2 seconds left on a skill and switch" technique and it abruptly stopped working?

BTW, locked in BL5 at 4.5 days, w00t.

  • clare, skills times increase after learning 20 skills. Better Learning will offset the penalties.

  • I think I have been misunderstood. I understand what happened. I understand WHY it happened. My point is/was that I don't think it should work that way.

Although... it occurs to me that the skill tree is so shallow that it doesn't really matter anyway.

  • Rachel2635, that may have changed this test.

Apparently skill learning times increase with every skill you learn, not just after the 20th

  • @ Windborn: Could be---they are tweaking so much, it seems. All I know is that my times did not change when I learned 3 skills after learning BL 4. I have not reached 32 skills yet and all the times are holding even though I am adding skills. It is confusing, to say the least.

  • Yeah, I was having the same experience, and I think I figured it out.

After reading the 'THIS is how to learn skills' thread, I, like probably countless other folks, looked into whether we could freeze the learning time dilation process by learning skills partway.  It seemed to work for a little while, but Tiny Speck, as always, was there to restore equanimity to the system to prevent exploitation.

The dilation of learning times now seems to follow the same rules as before, only based upon how many skills you've STARTED learning instead of how many you've finished.  If you start a whole bunch for a minute, you're now kind of shooting yourself in the foot, as you're accelerating the process by which skills take longer.  If, however, you finish any of the skills that you've already started, you'll find that other skills' times have not gone up.

    At least that's my experience.

    Balance restored.

  • That's a bummer, because now you can't efficiently use your favor to cut down learning time.  You have to stick it out through whatever skill you're learning or you start to penalize yourself.

Already I've gotten one of these hateful emblems accidentally, by getting a badge when I wasn't expecting it.  I suppose it would be better if emblems were something other than pretty anchors.

  • Biff Beefbat   -  you can make it less likely that you'll do that by spending whatever favor's at the shrine before you start donating.    I think you have a daily favor limit with each God that is basically whatever the current cost of an emblem with that giant.

So if you turn up at the shrine with some EHSP & a pocket full of gems to donate,  spend whatever you have already accumulated,  and then donate... you'll then get the warning if you're going to go over the daily limit, which coincides with the "get an emblem" thing  (unless you donate EXACTLY the amount for the emblem).    People have asked for a "you're about to get an emblem" warning,  but I don't think that's in yet.

  • I was actually hoping to use my around 900 points with the next skill that was coming up in around 20 minutes when I got the badge.

Before the reset, I would go nuts when I'd get unexpected bonuses at the shrines which would push me into the next level, and then the extra favor would give me the stupid emblem.

Then I was happy Global Chat was around so I could do more than howl into the wilderness.

Anyway, I suppose I care a lot less this time, given that we now have all of eternity to learn all of our skills.

I'm enjoying being homeless this time...about the only reason I've even considered getting a crashpad is to have somewhere to store my emblems.  But then I wonder...what for?

We should be able to shove them back down the toilets and force the giants to vomit.  That'd probably look pretty cool.

  • I bought a house to have a place to store my 5 element bags when I don't need them (aka whenever I'm not in my house). That and a nice garden, and RHK, and I don't have to worry about energy ever again!

  • I never thought I would say this but now it is much easier to stop playing.  The rewards have been pared down and it is not as much fun to play.  There is a fine line between making the game work to make money and keeping players happy.   We Alpha players are so spoiled. We knew the game when it was fast and furious... few barriers to speedy leveling. Now I am dragging my feet. It seems more like rote and lots of it to get ahead. I urge the devs to ease up on making the game so tough.
