Blockmaking Questions

I have recently learned blockmaking.  I understand that blocks/bricks are required for street projects, but I've not yet had a chance to participate in such projects. So here are my questions:

1. Are some kinds of blocks more needed than others?
2. Can I use community machine rooms or should I get my own equipment for blockmaking?
3. If I get my own equipment, can I put it either in my house or in my yard?

Any other advice on blockmaking will be appreciated.  BTW, I have the fuelmaking skill as well.

  • Also, is it helpful to make them and save them for street projects? What quantity are we talking about here?

  • I put a blockmaker and a fuelmaker in my house. Mostly because I'd never had any of those skills and I wanted to try them out. Far as I can tell you can disassemble the machines again if you want to move them or sell the parts. The advantage of the community rooms is some yield bonus I can't recall off the top of my head, but it's written on the wall in the machine room.

I don't know if certain blocks are better or needed more than others as I never got these skills in beta. I suspect the next street project will include a round of engineering at which point we'll know a little more

I would offer that my biggest advice if you're going this route is to pump up your soil appreciation skills. Loam figures heavily in blockmaking but has a sparse return rate when digging dirt.

  • You might also benefit from a bag full of firefly jars and a super scraper. As far as I can remember, every type of block featured in various street projects.

  • I might have misremembered (and it could change anyway), but I think street projects in beta required 80-100 blocks. (And I'm fairly sure that not every project needed any sort of block). As Apathy intimated, the scarcity of loam means that AAA blocks are often in shortest supply, since they require the most loam. Bricks too can be relatively rare, because they require fireflies and barnacles, both of which can be quite pricey on the auctions as they are relatively time-consuming to collect, and are also the constiuents of crystals (which some people like to donate to shrines).

You get a 5% bonus if you use a community machine room; this can be energy or mood, or an extra bit of loam, talc etc. Use them to start out with, unless you're flush with currants, as the blockmaker components are expensive. If you do get your own, you can place them anywhere in your house/yard, although you'll mess up you feng shui if you dump them in the living room....

  • ...and it's next to IMPOSSIBLE to get those peat stains out of the carpet :P

  • Thanks for all the helpful info.  I especially appreciate the tips about loam, barnacles and fireflies.

@Bobby Chuckles - I live in a tree house, so my living room does not have much feng shui.  A blockmaker might be just the thing to add interest.

  • So how does one get in on helping a street project? I have a blockmaker, and now the skills, but don't know what to do with all my blocks

  • I also live in a tree house, and I balanced my blockmaker on the wee branch stub next to the ladder leading down to the garden, and the fuelmaker at the far end.  It's getting a little crowded in there with the piggy feeders and the milk and meat collectors and and Humbaba's Icon (thought he'd like it where he can watch over the animals,) but I like it like that.

  • All good previous comments about the block making...actually you can assemble the machine anywhere, but some have had others take either pieces or whole machines from street projects. Can be frustrating, when you are just trying to help the project as a whole by providing a machine, but want to participate in the project too.  Many have taken to standing guard over their machines, but then they miss out on participating in the project sometimes.

Just some additional thoughts - Some suspect that blocks may be required when we finally get the group hall projects back too...still unclear exactly what those will need, but never hurts to be prepared.  Considering there has been some discussion about decorating house skills may include renovations to houses, many of us have speculated that blocks and bricks may come in handy for those as well...but it's still just player speculation.

Hoping they revive the street projects...will be fun to get back to those again.  Note that blocks and bricks only stack in 5's, so it can be challenging to make a lot in advance without large bags.  However, they also seemed to bump you up the most in % at street projects, especially bricks and AAA blocks.

    Have fun!
