Request: If you point a glitch to a wood tree, he'll have a plank for today...

...If you link him to http://zoggish.appspot.com/locations, he'll never be plankless again.

I see so many people in global just pointing people to a nearby wood tree or particular vendor or explaining (in depth!) the process to make some specific food. I love how helpful everyone is, but if you tell them where to find a wood tree they're going to come back in five minutes asking about a bubble tree. And then salt. And then they'll want to know how to get into Ajaya. And the questions will never end. If we start pointing people to some of the great resources out there (zoggish, the wiki, and greasemonkey scripts to name a few) then they will actually learn how to answer these questions for themselves. Which is much better for everyone.

So please! Help me in my endeavor to spread the word about the wonderful resources our Glitch brethren have worked so hard on! Together we can nurture a more knowledgeable Ur :)

Edit: I know wood trees are a poor example as they can be grown and cleared all before Zog's even knows about them. But my general point is that we can help people more by teaching them how to find things for themselves rather than just giving them the answers.

  • Put some of the more useful links on your profile, perhaps?

  • TK-855: That's a good idea, thought I don't know how many people would randomly look at my profile :P  Really I think we need a sticky with helpful links in the forums. But just giving them out when people ask will at least help some.

  • Just what are planks all that good for, anyway?   You can eat them (ugh), you can feed them to your piggies, you can cook fish on them, you can hit people with them, and that appears to be about it.

  • WalruZ: Mainly the people looking for wood trees are doing it for a quest, not for the planks. But they're also used in street projects.

  • I can plant a wood tree, use Fertilidust Lite to grow it to full health, leave the street and come back to find it replaced with a bean tree before Zog's location app has even had a chance to find it and list it on the wood tree page. (I think the app polls the API every hour, and I've had trees razed in less than 23 minutes.)

Frankly, if I've planted a wood tree, I'm going to try to help people find it ASAP before it gets destroyed.

  • Julep: I've found them using Zog's before, but that is a valid point. Maybe for wood trees it's a little more difficult. But for most other questions the resources are still great. And you can always tell someone where to find something for now but also give them a link for later.

  • At one point, I realized I hadn't wandered very far abroad - central Groddle, mostly. So I went walkabout, moving from region to region (and even the ancestral lands), just to see the sights. That's how you find things you'll need. Explore the world. (And, once you've got your papers, then it's simple enough to take the subway back to familiar territory, or you can learn teleportation and bop back and forth at will.)

  • Yeah, I definitely use Zog constantly to monitor the number of known wood trees in the world, among other things! It's always nice when I can keep one alive long enough to get listed. :)

  • TK-855, the odds are OVERWHELMINGLY against finding a wood tree just by wandering around, especially over the course of one game day (if you're trying to fulfill the quest.) Do you know how many wood trees there are on public streets in Ur right now? One. How many streets are there, over 700? And this is a quest that relatively low-level n00bs get.

  • Wood trees need special protection, which is why I formed "The Vigilante Guardians Of The Wood Trees Of Ur" and now have the support of a growing number of like-minded Glitches:
    www.glitch.com/groups/RHFMG...

We've tried planting a couple of one-ended streets, at the edge of a region, with wood trees and keeping an eye on them. With notes by the trees, the slaughter is, at least, slowed down!

You're all welcome to join us, of course.

Oh yes... Nanookie wouldn't forgive me if I didn't add: "wood trees are the veal of trees!"

  • The only time I've seen a wood tree in the wild, the only option I had was "harvest and clear", which implied that it was dead.  I wasn't given the option to water or pet it, just take the remaining wood.    Do they die that easily?     If they are dead, does it make sense to 'protect' dead trees in patches?   What am I missing?

  • They're not dead *yet* when you get the option "harvest and clear", you can still pet/water/fertilidust them to full size from there. But if you do take the option, the tree is gone.

  • A couple days ago, I planted eight wood trees in Kajuu. I left a note next to each one encouraging people to nurture it rather than harvest and clear. A few hours later, they had all been replaced by fruit and bean trees. There aren't a lot of noobs in Kajuu, so I figured the wood trees would have a better chance of surviving. Alas, no such luck!

  • Zog's is a SPECTACULAR resource, but, alas really isn't that helpful when it comes to wood trees. There are so few around in the wild, and, as many have stated, they don't last long.  Instead, it makes far more sense to point people to the carefully tended trees on residential streets.

  • I wish I hadn't used wood trees as my example. This thread has totally derailed :(

Okay, it's been established that wood trees don't stay around long and therefore Zog's is kinda useless for them. But it still works for nearly everything else. Let's forget the wood trees and bring it back to my original point. Does anyone have any other thoughts on that?

  • Hehehe.... yeah, I definitely thought that the Wood tree element of the conversation was the important bit.  +50 for pointing people more generally to tools instead of just doing it for them.
