Remote heard keeping thievery on home streets

Earlier this week I was delighted to join the group Housing Resource Routes for their Gas Tree Route. By the next morning I was dismayed to find that my recent purchase of multiple RHK machines had vanished.

I understand that there are complications concerning permission on items however since new housing is in it's infancy these types of issues should be addressed. The Tiny Speck team should take into consideration that even when complete launch happens and there is more room in the lawns of many glitchen as they augment with our imagination - glitchy folks will still want to herd animals on their home streets.

Housing Resource Routes is a great idea and truly creative. This brilliant social activity should be praised and possessions such as RHK items should absolutely be protected to keep this sort of interaction - and the game in general - fun and fair.

New housing exists in our imagination, and as with imagination IRL, it can be a very private thing - even if you share it with the world.

  • So far, TS has made it clear that the public street in front of your house is not at all the same as the inside of your home.

Just like owning property IRL.  Even though you own the land all the way to the middle of the street, the street itself is a public right-of-way, and the public has the right to park, drive, and pick up anything you leave by the curb.

  • At the moment we have no expectation that RHK machines will not get taken and resold when we place them in our front yards.  However, we do have that expectation with gnomes, icons, stills, and block- and fuel-making machines.  We may never get the ability to "place" any inventory item we choose, but I'm not sure it's unreasonable to ask for a change on this specific point.  The animals themselves may always be taken, but it might be possible to be able to "place" feeders so they are unliftable without endangering the public-private partnership dynamic or whatever it is that TS is aiming at.

But for the moment, yeah, I wouldn't place anything out that you didn't hope someone would eventually take and either use themselves or sell at a profit.  There are a few glitchen out there already who have made a habit of doing this.

  • I think there's a game-balance argument to be made against allowing feeders and collectors to be locked to Home streets. The design of the new housing allows the effective size of the Glitch game space to grow as new players join the game, and to shrink if the number of active players declines.  Keeping the game in balance requires keeping the game space from becoming either too resource-poor or too resource-rich. If animals, feeders, and collectors could be locked in place, the game space could easily become too resource-rich.

However, there is a change that could make it easier to maintain animals on Home streets: Make it so that RHK equipment cannot be sold to NPC vendors or donated to shrines. If players can only dispose of RHK equipment through interaction with other players, there will be less incentive for a player to collect a lot of these items -- especially if/when the AH is replaced by a system that allows players to have more control over how and from whom they buy.

  • TS has already made clear that the home street is a public place with some control. If you want to place feeders and collectors in a place where none shalt steal from, it's one step away.

  • Actually TS has made it clear that the situation will remain a blend of public home streets with SOME private controls FOR THE PRESENT time.

    stoot says here:

"The "right" way to think of them is something like "They are public streets which are owned and controlled by a single player" or, maybe, "they are privately-owned streets which the public has access to, within limits" — either way, you're kind of right :)

The fact is, though we have lots of opinions internally, we're going to wait a little while and see what kind of uses and issues arise before making any significant changes. It's a subtle thing. Besides, there are other features coming (style-switching and cultivation) which will change the way they are used and understood by players."

So don't give up hope Merth!
