Ass?

I and many others that have completed the second Kid's room Quest "Word Up" Will have noticed that when spelling the word "ass" it was not included in the 24? I do not see why a donkey does not get included, as it is a name for a donkey. This word should be included in the quest.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donkey
"The donkey or ass, Equus africanus asinus,[1][2] is a domesticated member of the Equidae or horse family. The wild ancestor of the donkey is the African Wild Ass, E. africanus. In the western United States, a small donkey is sometimes called a burro (from the Spanish word for the animal)."

  • Also not included

    TAS (more than one thank-you)
    EAS (more than one waterway)
TET (an event in the Vietnam war)

  • Actually, "TET" shouldn't work.

The word is "Tết" in Vietnamese, and it's the name of the Lunar New Year celebration.

The "Tết Offensive" was an event in the war when the North Vietnamese gambled that no one would be expecting an attack on the most important holiday of the year. An equivalent would have been the "Christmas offensive" if it had gone the other way around.

  • There were several words that qualify as scrabble words that did not count toward the quest. The only one I can think of offhand is tat (to make lace) but I remember there being others.

  • I don't think any of those should work.....  "ass" is also used as a offensive name calling so i dunno...

  • I clicked on this subject with such excitement. How disappointing.

  • Hmmmm, I'm trying to remember which one it was, but one of the words I tried didn't show up either.

  • If you're going to be offended by it, you wouldn't put it in, would you?

It's a word for donkey.  It's always been a word for donkey

  • Also, it's a word for butt.  Which still doesn't mean it should be excluded.  However, the block does live in the Kid's Room, so perhaps it just never heard more "adult" language before?

  • Ass isn't adult language

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one who tried this.

  • I think its offensiveness--or not--depends on where you live and the context in which you're used to using it. I grew up reading children's books in which the child-protagonists would say "Don't be an ass!" to one another; this was a normal thing to say, and meant that someone was being stupid, stubborn, and mulish - asinine. Where I live now, it's definitely viewed as a reference to one's posterior.

So it's likely playing it safe on TS' part to not include it in the list.

  • I have to say that I was more surprised that "ATM" is a word.

  • TS keeps saying that, despite the art style and such of the game, Glitch isn't for children. The inclusion of ass as a word shouldn't bother anyone, especially with the more sexual innuendos hidden about in badges and things.

  • Again, why would you guess a word that you're offended by?

it's not like the word's out there for everyone to get offended by.  like, say, Eglesgown Wanks.  Which I'm fairly sure doesn't have a non-adult meaning

  • Doesn't actually bother me, just pointing out a thematic reason why it might not be in there.

And, I'm sorry @shexycorin, but I challenge you to find a kindergarden teacher that doesn't have "ass" on the list of "bad words" that children should not say in their classroom.  I don't disagree that its not an "adult" word per se, but it IS a word that most children in the English speaking world are taught is "naughty", "bad", etc.  Except in those parts of the English speaking world where it is spelled "arse", I suppose...

Point, not actually suggesting that it is offensive, just suggesting a possible thematic reason for its exclusion.
