Let's show some manners in the Herb Gardens, shall we?

With the elevated emphasis placed on herb growing due to the new tincturing skill, some people are being downright awful to others in the few public herb gardens- to the degree of stealing your herbs that you are actively tending right in front of you and leaving the plot a mess only to dash off to do it somewhere else! This happened to me several times in the last hour or so alone.
At the very least, re-plant what you take, and if someone is "standing guard" and tending, just ASK what's what.

  • Some people like playing the Thief. There's no need to complain about it on the forums.

  • I think it would be nice to have items you've planted locked to you when it matures, similar to how items are locked to you for 30seconds when it drops

  • Those with criminal minds always cry foul when their perv way of life is threatened. I find it *almost humorous, and it would be, if those who haven't ever been affected by crime didn't come dashing to the criminally minded people's aid as if THEY were the victims.

  • I go, look for an empty area and if there is one I plant up all 3 or 6 with seeds that I want, I'll fertilize, wait and harvest when they are ready.  This I'll do a couple of times then I'll replant (with purple) and leave.  If it is a busy day and someone comes in looking for plots, if I'm at a 6 area, I'll share as soon as my herbs have grown.  What annoys me are the people who run through grab your herbs as soon as they come up and dash off again, growing Rubeweed or Rookswort is not easy as they only give 1 plant when you harvest and usually only 2 seeds when you shuck them so if I'm trying to build up a stock someone taking one or two makes a huge difference to the amount of plants I can build up.
I've met some really nice people whilst gardening in the herb gardens and had some good chats whilst waiting for the herbs to grow and I appreciate the fact that the gardens are open to all a bit of courtesy would be nice.

  • I stood by herb plots, guanoed, and waited. It took forever for my one yellow herb plant to grow. And then someone took it after I asked them to please not. It made me sad. I wish the player would have respected my wishes since I paid for the seed in auction. It was my first bad Glitch encounter.

  • Muf1, there are plenty of small homes with herb gardens that are accessible to someone at your level.
Posted 11 months ago by WindBorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • actually not anymore - all four swamp regions have been sold out for a week or so now. I genuinely wonder if the population of UR just exploded over the holidays with people getting friends/relatives playing, or everyone moved in from other regions, or a whole lot of alts were made. Maybe all of the above.

  • Yup been checking the real estate for a week or so now for a big herb garden home but there isn't even small ones available. If you don't have an herb garden and don't like to use the community gardens put on your Glitch status that you are looking for someone who will give you a key to their herb garden home. I've had great success doing this for a friend of mine. Just keep notes or open communication for the garden and you're good to go! Don't be afraid to ask. All people can do is say no.

  • i have had a horrible time at the herb gardens that i dont even try to go there. now i have a bunch of seeds and no place to plant them. i have been waiting forever for a house to open up but nothing yet.

  • I'm not saying people should be dicks to one another, but the signs are up in the community gardens to tell you what's what. Whatever you plant is for the community. Whatever you need, if you can find it, should be up for grabs.

I was so disappointed with how people go Herb Police on others, that I realized I needed to get my own bog house. I assume that's why there's a housing shortage now, in addition to the emphasis on potions and tinctures.
Posted 11 months ago by Laerwen Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I just wish there were more bog houses. I actually wanted to switch to herbs and move out of my mansion but then the herb craze began and that's that. I guess eventually the newness will wear off and everything will go back to normal but until then I'm just staying away. Its just a game. You're not forced to plant herbs to advance in the game (although I do wish the quests would go away I've decided not to unlearn!)

  • The issue I see here is you just asked people to play the way you want to play. Sadly not everyone wants to do that. I do like you make quite a lot of effort to visit the gardens, share and hand out seeds. You will never ever get everyone to play along. The only thing we do have is the fact that TS have stated that things will change once the house re-designs come out.
I'm just waiting for that and not moaning because I'm lucky to be able to play at all because TS still allow us all to join in.

  • Well I got a Chakra Phool house back before they were cool, so I have all the herbs I can eat.  I always donate my extra seeds to the public garden.  Pay it forward and all.

The only problem is that damn onion quest.  Anybody got a crop garden?  >.<

  • Really there are sooooo many posts about the herb gardens in this forum! I have my own herb garden at my house! But still I plant some herbs in the herb gardens for ANYONE who is there to take them! I think THAT is what community gardens are about u plant some u take some thats it no yours or mine ;) THATS what the giants planned it to be...a place where ppl share and give and just meet to plant and such...but I guess most ppl will never get this! Its NOT STEALING to take something you CAN actually take! Its like when u leave something on the floor, dont cry when someone takes it *shrugs* I often drop cubimals etc. WHO CARES?! Its a GAME that should be FUN for everyone and you all are making such drama out of all this!

  • Getting yelled at once for harvesting one plot was all i could handle... had my alt buy a wee shack to plant my own... so glad i did!!
Posted 11 months ago by TARTAN Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Unfortunately buying a house with your alt for the purpose of helping your main is not allowed.  While it would help if they made an official update to the community guidelines to address this, there was a staff forum post that clarified the issue:

    http://www.glitch.com/forum/general/13500/

A summary: Alts can be used to play the game in a different way or have a different persona, not to gain an advantage for your main.  You cannot use an alt to allow you main to do something they would not otherwise be able to do (such as own two houses).

  • I have made the decision to stay away from herb gardening, tincture and potion making. A community garden just does not fulfil the needs of the people who need to plant for personal reasons. Just to even get an available plot, you need to harvest a herb that someone else has planted! Something is just wrong with this setup. The community gardens should be an option, not a necessity.
Posted 11 months ago by Trinitaria Starr ™ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'd agree that it's fair game in the herb gardens to pick plants that are available- BUT if someone is standing right in front of the plots and is tending that patch, common courtesy dictates that you move on. It's not polite to take things someone is obviously using.

I always took that "everyone to use" line as "yes, the gardens are there for everyone to use- as in, if you need a place to raise a crop, this place is available." And like anything else, you ought to leave it better than you found it, so clean up after yourself. Hovering in front of plots that someone is actively gardening is rude, and them mooning or dropping game show wheels so you can't even see the plots is just plain wrong. That's when I think people cross the line from "opportunist" to "thief."

I hope people think about what they do first. If you'd bought the seeds, planted them, watered them, waited patiently for them to grow up, then had someone zip in, moon you, and snatch them while your screen was covered with teddybear tush, how would you feel? I think for most, it's the lost time invested, not the plants themselves being stolen that annoys and upsets.

You're right Vegan, in part. The game should be fun for everyone- but if someone's going out of their way to be a jerk, it makes it less fun for those of us who are trying to enjoy the cooperative feeling that we like about Glitch.

  • There are no "should" in Glitch when it comes to how folks can play the game. Trying to regulate the behavior of fellow Glitchen e.g. "show some manners" or "thief" or "be a jerk" is an exercise in futility.

I find it most rewarding personally to have a playstyle that is generous, courteous, and carefree. I encourage others to play this way as well, and am happy to share my reasons for this playstyle to those who want to listen. I am saddened when I see Glitchen be greedy & discourteous -- but that is a choice they are free to make.

    Check twitter

So migrant gardeners can have time to admire their work, public plots'll be locked to the seed planter for 60 seconds after harvestin time.

  • I'm wondering if a passersby can guano them thus bring forward the harvesting time still?

  • Yeah, and who's the planter then?

    guano wars!

  • This exact thing would happen to me too! I hated it! And, although I loved being in Aranna; I finally just had to make move to a swamp house. :-| Now I have to buy produce. Why aren't there any Herb Vendors? Doesn't seem too fair to me.

  • I put some guano on crops at the community garden and it would not let me harvest it for 60 seconds.
Posted 11 months ago by Eye Wonder Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm glad to hear someone else can guano a plot planted by someone else. That way the plot isn't tied up for hours by someone who plants and run. I like planting to get hits toward the badge, but don't necessarily want to wait around for the harvest (or fight for it as in the past). Now I will not feel guilty about planting and leaving it for others to harvest.
Posted 11 months ago by Tibbi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • guano still available on all herb seeds. It does bring the time forward but I had the same as Eye Wonder. Herbs were there but locked for 60 seconds after blooming.
So if you want YOUR herbs, get the guano in and wait it out. Its not THAT long :)

I agree it helps people plant and leave too without any much worry. Still the plant will be yours for a whole minute if you planted the seed, even if someone else guano's it for you.

A very nice answer. I like. Thanks TS.
Posted 11 months ago by jiva Subscriber! | Permalink
  • And now that I think about it, anyone else anticipating complaints from folks who guano another's planting, just to have the planter "steal" the harvest! heehee  It just never ends. :)
Posted 11 months ago by Tibbi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The last few days I've been going to the herb gardens and replanting any open plots or leaving seeds to people to use. I'm not harvesting anything, I can buy whatever I need. I'll finish the herb quests when I have a new house. At this point I'll probably just leave some seeds so as to leave plots open for people who need them for their quests.

Yesterday I was in the Community Garden, and there were a lot of empty garden plots, so I replanted them and left some extra seeds for those who need them.

I also water and fertilize when I can. I just want to make people happy....

  • [Redacted by staff] is one to talk. I watched her steal my herbs just today right in front of me, and then she denied it when I asked her.

  • You had 60 seconds to collect your herbs after that they belong to who ever grabs them first.

  • @Pepper_MD
First, it's against the rules of this site to call out other players in the forums.  Unless you want staff to come in and edit your post, it's best if you edit it yourself right away.

Second, as soon as something is ready for harvest, no one else can harvest it for 60 seconds.  If you don't harvest it in that time, it becomes freely available to any other player.  No one can steal your herbs.
