A Small Grump

I just wanted to vent for a minute.  Is the idea that we should all be mining?  All good things for Glitch-kind come from mining: currants, favor, experience.  It's a bit of a downer, mood wise, but Earthshakers and Flaming Humbabas have the energy investment covered.  A little bit of skill investment and you can be mining quickly, producing your own ESHP to donate all the gems you collect, and be generally having a decent time of it.  At least, that's what it was like at the end of beta.

From what I hear, there are better bonuses for shared mining (which sounds like a good thing: the 1 or 2 chunks you got from help didn't cover the dozens you lost from splitting the rock), and now Poolookoo means that miners have the tragic choice between two wide open mines.

This time around, I went in for farming: Animal Kinship, Gardening and Croppery.  And I've done okay for myself.  I like that I can reliably make donatation akin to rubies (in the form of caterpillars) (and yes, I also like the idea of living sacrifices on the altar of Humbaba) rather than hope for more than just ambers.

I'm a little anxious, because a good deal of my comfortably-well-off comes from cheesemonging, and I expect the clever turks at TS to close the last loopholes there any day now.  And cheesemonging was part of what made the slower returns of farming more acceptable.

Now it feels like Mab and Humbaba aren't such a good plan - that the Zillish arts are better positioned to do well, and the wise and well informed Glitch will suck up the 7 days of skill learning and get down a hole as soon as she can.  And that's a little disappointing - a dominant strategy isn't a good characteristic for any game, even a big social sandboxy one.

  • For me personally, currants aren't everything. I like to make my own food, so AK + the cooking skills are the way to go for me.

  • My game play is totally different this time around. It feels like I am spending time in areas that I didn't explore much before (mostly because my old haunts are so dang crowded now). I feel like I am interacting with both the world and other players a lot more.

I kinda miss my pre-reset currants (gotten from mining). Yet, I had *so many* currants then that there were no real obstacles for me in the game.

This has been more fun. I think. My short-term memory may be shot, tho. :)

  • I mine when I feel like, but I hate every minute of it. I like to cook and donating food to the Giants gives me more per than ore of any kind does. Still, I've never quite figured out which Giants go to which skill and I kind of like it like that.

I just don't take the game as seriously as most of the more vocal people do.

  • Yarrow, it's been a week since the 1.0 started. In a few months, the skills you now have will seem most valuable, then it'll be cooking, etc. A year from now it will be whole sets of skills that are not in the game yet. It will be a long game!

  • Wow.  This really did start as a long-winded vent to a minor gripe.  But that's quite a thing to say, stoot.  I'm with you for a long game.  :)

  • In it for the long game.. I like it. I'm new around here and I'm having so much fun. For a little while I let the quests pile up and just went off on a walk about. I want to play instead of compete. I'm going to try the cooking a meal for a Giant donation thingy. Thanks!

  • I haven't mined once post reset and don't have any mining skills learned. Mining is certainly not necessary. As for speed and EHSP and whatnot, I've decided I don't need it. We've been live for a week and I'm already level 20. I don't see the need to rush towards 60 if I'm having fun doing what I'm doing.

  • Just because other people are using a certain strategy doesn't mean we all have to do it.  Mining bores me to death, and I wouldn't play Glitch if it had to do it more than a couple times a day (just to help people, and get elements for alchemy) I love planting and selling crops!

  • I hardly ever mine, except when required by quest. When the street projects really start up, I will have to do some more for that. I focused on animal kinsmanship and I collect meat, grain and milk. I make and sell sammiches and cheese. I have a nice house in Groddle Meadow and plenty of currants in the bank. Everyday I get to wander around Ur admiring the scenery and petting piggies.

Short story: It does not have to be all mining unless you want it to be.

  • I have a small, nah medium grump: Why limit the number of choices with Rube to a measely 5?! I love to haggle/barter with the Rube, see what wondrous offers he comes up with,or at least I did. Encountering the Rube used to be pure and utter joy.
I can see that the choices shouldn't be endless,or even say more than 15,but only *5* is a bit harsh. Sorry guys, but this just isn't fun any more. =/

  • I think scilly that people were taking advantage and just waiting for a cubimal to come along...I know I certainly was! I accept the handslap, tinyspeck :)

  • Some days I mine. Some days I farm. And it's more on a 'what do I need?' (if I don't need beans, I don't stop at bean trees) basis than 'rake in the currants' mentality. I'm hoping to get to the point where I can begin maintaining food supplies through farming/cooking, rather than shopping (even as a convenience).

  • I'm having a blast with the AK skills. I've also boosted my gardening and have been branching out and grabbing bits here and there of what I remember enjoying in beta. But mining? Meh. Granted, I'm not trying to get rich quick. I've taken two levels in mining so far and probably will leave finishing off the levels until I have everything else I want. And while the skill tree is currently a little lop-sided, TS seems to be fixing it little by little, much to a vocal majority's chagrin.

When I do go a-mining, I tend to mine a couple rocks (eventually with help if they happen to be sparkly I found unattended) and then go back to what I was doing before. And it's rarely planned. So far. Eventually I'll need the elements for projects.

As for Rube, 5 is the perfect amount. If you don't like what he offers, don't take any of the trades. At some point, he just stops being useful. "But I already HAVE an Awesome Pot!" "But I don't NEED a tomato seed!" I think people were getting too reliant on him. I mean, he's helped my cubimal collection considerably, but only because I don't have enough money to pay for it yet. I'm not particularly concerned though, probably indicated by the fact that I have a collection and not a lot of currants. I have plenty of time to strike it rich and finish my collection. I think depending on Rube for fun is dangerous, as he tends to show up less the more you start teleporting around rather than walking, at least in my experience.

  • I haven't mined but what was required for the quests I've had.  I went AK and Cooking, and have never needed for currants so far.  I just started seriously saving yesterday and I'm halfway to my 50k house.

And I don't think my mood has dropped below "winking green guy" since I started playing!

  • I am doing fine for myself with Humbaba, Mab, Grendaline, and Lem (for BL). A 30k house. Plenty of currents to spend on gifting newfolk with bags and treats. Awesome stews, milk, and meat out the wazoo!

  • I don't care about currants and I got all the emblems without mining, mostly I donated eggs and music blocks (rewarded from croppery).

The streets projects is what I personally enjoy more, and I can participate without mining, although I going to learn those skills later on. As a priority I learned Master Chef II and complete the cooking achievements until I got the Awesome Stew recipe, because energy is very much needed at the streets projects and for any activity.
