Dude, no one stole from you

Seriously.

[pulls glasses down on nose]

It is impossible for people to steal from one another in this game.  No one can reach into your bags and no one can enter your house without permission.  You can keep all of your belongings safe from others by keeping it in the places that are designated as yours.  People seem to be confusing how they'd like things to be with how they actually are.

No one stole your meat collector: you left it in a public area.
No one planted a tree in your plot: that plot is on a public street.
No one stole your emblems from your house: you chose to let someone into your home who you did not know very well.

Be a grown up and take care of your belongings using the tools you've been given.  You've just been given a free home with plentiful resources.  Enjoy it!

  • The home streets are NOT the same as public streets. Consider the following FACTS:

    1. No one else can have a house on MY street, which would NOT exist without my account.

    2. I have the ability to BLOCK people from my street. (Stoot - "Blocking people should stop them from visiting your home street.") No one can block any other player from ANY public street.

    3. I already have the ability to PLACE and LOCK certain items on MY street. No one else can do this on MY street and I do not have the ability to do so on ANY public street.

Therefore, whether you call it private, semi-private, semi-public, quasi-public, or quasi-private, you CANNOT correctly say that the home street is the same as a public street.

Corollary 1: If you remove something from MY street without MY permission, you have stolen it.

Corollary 2: The HOME streets are different from the PUBLIC housing blocks, therefore saying that something is true on the public housing blocks doesn't necessarily mean that it is true on the HOME streets.

  • +1 Audaria, and I will add one more line to Audaria's statement.

My home street says "Innie's Home Street, owned by Innie".  Yep, that pretty much sums it up.

  • Rook we are supposed to be able to block people from our /home streets. Its a bug that this is not working correctly.
Posted 9 months ago by Innie✿, Obviously Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Not true Rook. Look at stoot's comments - or Bees! comments. While there may be a bug in place at the moment, blocking someone is supposed to block them from your home street. They are working on fixing the bug, thus the way the game is designed, you CAN block someone from your home street.

  • Thus, I think TS has started down a slippery slope they would be better off scrambling back up while they can.

The street your house is on should be named "Residential street" by default.   Everyone's street would start with this name.  You can rename it, but the name you choose would not bestow any ownership.

You should be able to lock a certain limited set of items to the front of your house, as before - Gnomes, Jackolanterns - that's about it.

You should not be able to block people from accessing the street outside your house.  If they grief you, report it.  Otherwise, it's public space.

Done.   I simply cannot understand why people insist on trying to take over the area in front of their house.    You have a  back yard.  Use it.

If I "own" my street, as per the loading screen, then by extension I should own anything I choose to place on my street, and anyone who takes those items is stealing.

  • HeyGabe, sadly, I was being nice but firm.

I was trying to differentiate between people talking about how they'd like things to be and how they are right now.  There certainly are a lot of CAPS in the the responses.  I think it's great that people want to help out new players by leaving resources in their front yards!  It's a shame that there's no way to control what kind of person takes what you offer.

For the record, I am not a person who thinks it's okay to pick up things that people leave if there's any question of intent (no note saying "free", for example) because I prefer to earn my own keep in Glitch.  I'm not after your feeders or newbie bags, I just wanted to express that the concern about "me me mine" that seems to be taking over is not one shared by all, and that those who are worried about who is receiving what they offer have other avenues to store, items, decorate living spaces and give gifts.

Posted 9 months ago by AwesomeCardinal2000 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Then give your reasons. I enumerated my reasons for believing they are NOT equal to PUBLIC streets. If you want to make an assertion, support it.
Posted 9 months ago by Audaria Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Ahh. Sloppy, my friend. Your follow up post is much less churlish. Thank you for your clarification. I believe I posted in one of the other threads on this topic that most of this is todo about nothing, since, in the end, the front streets such as they are do not have much of a future.

That being said, I think the situation is less concrete that those who want simple answers that fit easy containers seem to think.

This game, moreso than most, relies on the development of a complex social contract. It's not a matter of considering whether you can steal things off people's front yards so much as a matter of considering whether you should

It woud seem that you and I agree on this measure: People should flip their "dick" bit to "off."

With that in mind, I shall do so.
Posted 9 months ago by HeyGabe Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @HeyGabe: I read the OP as entirely reasonable, and not at all "high-and-mighty"...and certainly not worth swearing at them over.  It's nearly impossible to accurately read "tone" unless you know someone well and are accustomed to reading what they have to say.

@Volkov: It was rotten eggs...and we don't need to talk about how I know or why my Glitch smells like sulfur *cough*

Yes, the new housing is and feels much different and more private than the housing we're all accustomed to.  However, that doesn't change that the "street" is public.  Nor does it change that some people will be unkind and take things.  Regardless of how much something costs to replace, having something taken sucks.  It's a bummer, and leaves a decidedly icky taste in the mouth of the player who worked to get whatever bit of colored and coded pixels that are now in someone else's possession.  In short, it's the principal of the thing.

Unless something has a note next to it saying "take" or "free" or whatever to indicate that it's up for grabs I think it should just be assumed that things on the new street are NOT to be taken.  No, that won't stop some folk from going ahead and taking things, so if you don't want to risk it don't put things on your new street.

We'll get the ability to decorate the streets at some point and until then we just have to be patient and deal with how things are while the new housing system is rolled out.

Just so it's clear what I'm saying:
If you take something on a street that belongs to someone else that isn't clearly marked as being up for grabs you're being an asshat...and if you put something on your street you don't want taken you are risking being the victim of asshattery.
Posted 9 months ago by Belasco Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Belasco: 'It's nearly impossible to accurately read "tone."'
Disagree. That's what lazy people who don't write so good like to say.
Regardless, this is required reading. (Or listening.) Or whatever.
    Irony. It's totally a dick.

  • The way TS rolled out keys, I doubt that there would be more "secure" objects or streets.

However, it's likely that the ideal behind the two are very different as aspect was a bit more diversely cultivated into creation by Glitchen themselves, and not just TS.

But I'm not going to go into that, I'm going to go into the things that "makes" a street.

    (insert info explaining my point)

So basically, all I have to say is, that things that can be crafted easily, are not "important" or likely to be lost [ reason why icons are stuck to the ground]. Meaning that pig sticks, distillers, etc, can't be crafted, and even though they are not of a huge value, they can't be easily replaceable, whereas you can tinker collectors, get rid of animals, add more, etc.

Olive Oil, Cubimals, etc, can be replaced by amassing currants. Usually, people don't decorate Rook Cubimals in front of their house and the currants are recoverable with time. With glitch, the only obstacle you face is, is time. Almost everything else can be avoided with some sense and help from tools and other Glitchen.

Basically it's not really about value, but rather 'craftability'. If vendors were gone tomorrow and you were the only glitch in the world, would you be able to replace your precious object?

Posted 9 months ago by Nayeli Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Damn, big debate. But, I do agree 50% of Sloppy's main sense, but also Audaria's. Why aren't able to lock down Pigs/Milk Collectors and Feeders, if we can lock down our Icons? And, it may be our street, but we can let anyone access it as well.

    ^Above:
Yeah, exactly! I don't get why we can't just keep Pigs, Chickens, and Butterflies. We ARE helping them TEST the Houses, right?

    Please lock this topic if it gets any more Troll-ing. -.-;

  • I'm ready to be flamed here, but to keep the front streets private TS would just need to set it up so that like friend requests, a notification would pop up asking if 'so and so' can add you to their sign post.  Then give the home owner the option of saying yay or nay! Obviously people find loop holes but it could be tweaked where needed.  I might post this in ideas...................

I also think that the current home street are a lot different than the existing residential streets in that you can't just walk onto them whilst exploring.  For those that are on the 'nab' runs they have to amend their signpost everytime or follow other's signs with the pure purpose of taking and getting as much as they can.  You can call it stealing or not (or grabbing because you can't be bothered to take the time to make the items yourself or are out for an easy buck at the expense of your neighbours) - the new home streets are currently outside of Ur at present though.  Just a thought...............

  • taking feeders and collectors from the front of people's houses is just plain rude and shows the complete and utter lack of class of the taker. Yes, I can keep all my piggies and feeders and collectors in my backyard, and I suppose I will since some people obviously weren't raised with any sort of ethics. I have plenty of currants, and plenty of supplies to make more. I have asked that people not take my pig's feeder so that he won't die, and to just IM me if they need currants or tools; I will gladly make and give them without issue. But still, the feeder goes missing. I pity people who run around this game snapping up anything that isn't nailed down. They clearly have some kind of mental disorder.

  • I don't really understand things anymore. Why can't we all just get along? It's not like taking collectors, milkers, or feeders will ever hurt anyone. At most, they would really only hurt the person who's taking them. They're easily replaceable; icons on the other hand, are not that easily replaced, the reason as to why they can be locked down in front of one's street.

P.S. It's just like karma, if you do bad things, bad things will come right back at you, and vice versa.

  • Personally, everything on my home street is stuff that a. can't be taken, or b. i'm not too concerned about losing. Man up, or put your feeders and collectors inside. There would be a problem with the trees, but there are plenty of trees ALL AROUND UR, and if you're really concerned about having a wood tree, plant one in your backyard.

Although, I wouldn't mind if there were drop-boxes in front of houses for gifters to use. Perhaps limited-slot so you could stuff it with shiny objects >.>

  • There are presently two pigs on my street that anyone who visits the street can nibble.  Since I'm on a tree harvest route, I've put out a pig feeder to keep the pigs from diminishing the trees. I replace the pig feeder at least once a day. No big deal. However, because I soon will be playing less frequently, I will be removing the pigs to my back yard. I'll be doing that because I've seen that a feeder left on the street will be taken. Moving the pigs to my back yard won't inconvenience me one bit. It will, however, remove a small resource that would otherwise be available to others.

I believe most of the people who are attempting to maintain animals and trees on their streets are doing so primarily to provide resources for the community rather than for their own convenience. If it becomes too inconvenient, people will stop doing this -- and it won't be an inconvenience for them, but rather a resource removed from being available to the community.

  • This is definitely my favorite thread ever.

I recently had a situation where I took a few items of food from a random street that was laying around. There was NOBODY around the area it was in.

Then they all accused me of stealing it. If you didn't want anyone to take it, you shouldn't have left it on the ground...
Posted 9 months ago by Mons†er Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Taking food is one thing.
Taking feeders that have a note next to them outlining to please not take it, it is there to feed a resource for the community, but it gets taken anyway is a very different thing.

I'm 100% with splendora on this one. I just don't see why it is so hard to leave feeders alone when piggies are seen on a street. Nibble the piggies and say thanks that they were provided there for you. Why is this hard for people?
