annoyed with tree planting quest

I didn't see a pre-existing thread, but I'm wondering if anyone else is annoyed about the fact that unless we happen to buy a house that has multiple tree plots before receiving the tree-planting quest, we have to poison a tree, remove it and re-plant it? I live in the slough regions and the only tree I can plant in my house is an egg-plant.

I feel like an evil jerk every time I had to kill a tree (virtual or no, I'm still a tree-hugger at heart). The situation is made worse by someone else thinking I was just poisoning trees for fun and started applying antidote before I could remove and re-plant a tree. One particular player became so defensive, before I could explain myself, I was attacked with a plank. Ugh.

Furthermore, I am annoyed that I loose mood and have to feel "guilty" for poisoning a tree when I'm not given other options. Open tree plots are NOT something that you encounter by chance in the game.

  • I've never done that quest, because I bought a house with empty plots and planted it all up... before receiving the quest.  And I thought it was a rotten thing to have to do.  So I just left it alone.

  • Hmm, I had also planted four trees in the plots at my house but then a month or so later went ahead with the quest just for the sake of the quest.

Too bad someone tried to splank you for altering the trees that are on public streets!!  I also felt bad killing trees and then felt bad collecting the planks and even felt bad selling the planks.  But, I completed the quest and in the process I felt great for having created new trees.  Petting them until they are annoyed was fun, yes, I did that for each of the three!!  "Stop petting me, I need to do the rest on my own" etc.  Made me feel like an annoying parent trying too hard.  Ahh, little tree-lings, how I love thee!

I think you should rejoice in the trees you have helped created, many glitchen have petted them, watered them, harvested them and enjoyed their loveliness.

I no longer have need of tree poison though.  Ever.

  • I have done the quest several ways.  It is not very nice to have to kill a tree, but it is good to plant a new one.

After I had killed the bog one four times I got a bit used to it, so it wasn't that bad.

If I was out in the wild I would find a quiet backwater and wait until no-one was around. then I would have a prepared spech bubble saying "I am doing this for a quest, I will replant the tree"  everyone has understood so far and most have had the quest themselves so just passed on.  Some even gave some random energy or mood as they knew it helped.

If the tree is replanted there is no harm done.  And though I hate the "it is only a game" thing, it is true to a certain extent, no real tree actually suffers!  I support what Minkey says about the new life.  The new trees are beautiful and productive, rejoice in them and your part in their growth.

  • Thanks, Casandra!

I also am aware that no trees, animals etc. are real but I still get a little mushy when I go to nibble a piggy and it is sad and out of meat, the way the little guy hangs his head :(

It is a game and it is fun to play it with respect to the aspects of the game.  But, yeah, still just a game, no trees actually being killed.

  • My one comment: If there is a quest you don't like, you don't have to do it. It doesn't stop you "progress" in the game.

Okay, my other comment: Glitch rewards having friends. This is truism. Many quests can only be done with help. Some (like this one) can become significantly easier with a friend.

  • When I was doing that quest I typed in a statement saying "I am doing the ____ quest. Please don't apply antidote." and broadcast it on local chat; where the blank is the name of the quest. Whenever anyone comes close I just hit the up button and hit enter to re-broadcast the message. It usually works and the only time it didn't, the applier of the antidote apologized for interrupting my quest.

It pays to be clear about your intentions when poisoning trees in public to avoid conflict. Most Glitchen would be cognizant of the fact that there are tree re-planting quests and give you the consideration you deserve.

  • Someone in Glitch offers a tree removal surface... I think his handle is trucker something or other. You could have this glitch clear the plot for you, and then plant where the tree was previously.

  • I, too, feel a bit sad about poisoning trees.  It just isn't fun, and, since I'm playing for fun, I doubt I'll ever do those quests unless it's right after we get the new housing and the patches that go along with them. So I do understand your feelings about the matter.

I've long wished there was a way to move quests I don't intend to do down on my list, though.  I suggested this in ideas once.  Maybe I'll do so again.

  • fwiw, i agree that it's a bit annoying to be forced to feel guilty when poisoning a tree, but only because i really enjoy killing a bean tree or two when the mood strikes.

i also live in the slough (hey whatever happened to lowland track, anyway?!) but have a very, very relaxed approach to quest-solving. you can also let your egg tree die over and over from neglect, but if you feel bad about poisoning, you probably won't like that much either...

you can probably take consolation in the fact that under the new housing regime, it will be up to you as to how many tree patches you have.

ps, minkey, you know you can just pet a piggy and feed him 1 meat to get him primed for nibbling, right? :)

  • There are presently certain types of housing blocks (meadow mostly) which have trees on the housing streets.   You are unlikely to run into residents on these streets, so they are a perfect place for this sort of activity.

  • It's worth lurking in Global Chat - I've seen a few people announce empty patches there recently.

  • +1 to Lord Bacon-o.  It would be good to have someone prepare the plot for you to grow a new tree.  Wish I had thought of it at the time.  Lots of people are not so squeamish as to worry about killing the tree, in fact, now that I have done it a few times I am not so bad, so if anyone needs it I will come and do the evil deed for them!

Lol @Minkey, feel the same way about the piggies!  It is good to pet and feed them and perk them up though. :-)

  • Minkey ... pet them and drop one grain in front of them and they perk right up.

For some reason, that is as effective (and cheaper) than feeding them 1 meat by hand.

  • @Miss Portinari Yes that is what we do.
Do check global chat for empty patches,

  • @Lord Bacon-o - I finished the quest (no further attempts at splanking, thank goodness) but I'm curious- how do you suggest doing this quest with help of others?

@Perry Helium - I agree. I would like a better quest management system. No good ideas how to make it better though, lol (I do like how it doesn't obstruct the screen like in other RPG).

@Minkey - I avoid the meat harvesting mushyness by using fecundity powder. :)
Thanks all. Obviously you can skip quests but it is in the essence of the game design to complete quests in order to level up and get more quests so...necessary evil? Hm.
Now I still have to complete the Seed to Scythe quest. I can't help it- I feel so bad about killing a tree that (the game developers have successfully made me feel like) I have a rapport with. lol...

  • I did that particular quest by planting little woody stumps everywhere, then just harvesting and clearing them. no need for tree poison!
Posted 10 months ago by EE Cummings Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I finished it using my advantage, teleportation.
Plan it out if you have time.
Posted 10 months ago by MOLAIN Subscriber! | Permalink
  • You can do your part for wood by planting where there are already several other trees.  I do!  Spread the Wood!
Posted 10 months ago by WallyMcBeal Subscriber! | Permalink
  • If you see a wood tree with only one section, harvest and clear it and plant a new wood tree.

  • Thanks all, regarding the piggies.  Yes, I do like to feed them and pet them to perk them up.  I just make it part of my routine.  But, somehow, I still get a little bit sad at the five that suddenly are on my block but are never fed.  Since whomever made them seems to have left grain around and they are still sad, I just pick it up and drop it again and then I feed them zukes.  Well, on my old block.  Oh, no, they could be sad still!  I hope my former neighbors are feeding and petting them!

  • Now, i don't like doing in cherry, spice, wood, bubble, or egg tree's..... but sometimes that bean-tree just pisses me off!

  • I understand how you feel, and that's why whenever I find a patch, I tend to announce it on Global, and it's caught on, as others do it too.

As I am working towards my Paul Bunions badge, I tend to move away from my house trees so I can't hear their cries while they die.

And as far as getting the help of others to help you with the quest, they can kill a tree in their own yard with no mood loss, invite you in their home, and you can just plant a new bean for them. Simple as that.
Posted 10 months ago by Ayasta Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I used to feel extremely guilty for poisoning trees, especially if I poisoned accidentally and didn't have antidote or beans/supplies to replant. However, I eventually realized that patches are quite difficult to come by in Ur, and so leaving a patch behind is actually valuable to another player, so they can replant.  So while I was somewhat irritated when 11 streets in my Aranna neighborhood had ALL the trees killed, I figure I got a lot closer to earning my tree badges by fixing someone else's destruction.  There are enough players these days that nothing goes unchanged for long.

Re: feeling guilty, you'll notice that the guilt buff wears off before the tree even dies! So you don't have to feel guilty for long.

  • I have done that quest, and no, I didn't feel guilty about killing my tree over and over, at least not any more than I felt guilty for harvesting my herbs.  A plant is a plant, and just because it talks does not make it all that special.
Posted 10 months ago by Jewel Stoned Subscriber! | Permalink
  • UUUGH. This quest was rather annoying.
I had to go around killing trees and replanting them since the area I lived didn't let me plant others.

I would leave notes several feet away explaining so people wouldn't get mad but even reading it or me telling them, some where just jerks and kept using antidote causing me to buy more poison n such. @____@

  • I enjoy poisoning trees. Especially the jerks.
Posted 10 months ago by HeyGabe Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I dunno HeyGabe - all the trees seem cool to me... ;)

I've accidentally poisoned a few trees before and had to scramble to make an antidote! That was fun...

  • The bean trees are jerks. Every time I pet one it makes my ears bleed with some stupid pun.

They do make good stew, though.
