The ways in which Glitch sucks

Okay, not really. We all love Glitch and want to make babies with it. But there are some things that keep poking at me that need addressing.

1. Projects suck. See Zeeberk's thread, for example: beta.glitch.com/forum/gener...
We've talked about this a fair piece on the forums, but they still seem to be feeding frenzies and not helping build community. I am off projects lately.

2. More broadly, it seems like "community" is broken right now.

3. There must be some way to allow players to create. Granted, I don't know the right path here, and we can't do minecraft-level creation (though I kinda wish we could, 'cause minecraft is excellent), but there must be a way to allow it. I do think this will (in my vision, and probably not TinySpeck's) require a shift in control over what each location looks like. Right now, all we can change is what trees are planted and what animals are there. We need more.

4. Everything that can be done by players should be un-doable, though probably with a higher skill level. For example, I know that too many critters is an issue for Flash. But a player can't move a chicken or a butterfly. We can only move pigs. We should be able to place and remove all critters. It also kinda bugs me that the block makers become permanent fixtures... though I don't have that skill yet, so I don't have any use for them, so they just seem like eyesores.

5. I am sorry about the butterfly garden, but only sorta. It was beautiful! What I wonder here is if instead of rules or dev intervention, the world could deteriorate in a way more obvious to players and that players would have to clean up a world too cluttered with critters (or whatever). Too many critters (or whatever) could trigger the rook, or a more general call to community help, and players would have to fix it.

6. It will probably help at some point if there is some kind of a global bulletin board that has announcements including current or projected street projects, other things that need fixin', information about new lands opening, etc.

7. What does the new world look like? This is a little related to 2, in that I wish players had more of a hand. I know TS folks work hard to make each location, but I wish as players we had more control. Yes, this feeds right into the "let us create" refrain. I think this would be more of a reward than trophy pieces. And again, as long as things that went awry were fixable if a disaster world were created, it would all be okay.

Okay, I'll shut up now.

  • There's something odd going on with the projects which no doubt makes sense to those who are spending a lot of their time doing projects. I don't have the patience for spending so much time walking from one place to another so have pretty much given up on them. But people are auctioning stuff for projects while other people are trying to walk there with their little contributions (especially new players who think they're being helpful) and of course by the time they get there it's not needed. If you only want the currants you can auction it yourself but if you want the share of the project benefits you can't get it.

  • Oh Stoot ( and devs) Rascalmom really said it. We adore you, we adore your game. You took in the lot of us FS refugee's with open arms and made us feel so welcome. I was floored. I also think it is so awesome that you come into the game with us. There is nothing to be ashamed of, you cannot see it as we do. We see an amazing game in progress that gets better and better. From the lines of Bye Bye Birdie.....

    We love you Stooooot.
    Oh yes we dooooo.
    When your not near us,
    Were bluuuuuue.
Ohhhhhhh, stooooot, we , love, you!

  • I find that the most sensible way to work on projects is to spend a while collecting raw materials, and then to head over to the projects to contribute to multiple phases.  Also, join the New Streets group, which has a very active in-game chat channel, to find out what's needed before you go.

  •   Better communication between devs and players.  It just was not right for a Dev to step in and take {steal}  items from players and never return what they has stolen from them.
(I really felt violated, heart broken, pissed right off)
IT be nice to have a breeding grounds. Someplace you can hatch 100 pigs with out the Glitch world bitching about it and the lagging they get from all the pets running around..

ps. I really like my stuff, my time and currants back.. Yes, It does Suck!!

  • Possoms: who exactly took your things? Please explain, thank you :)
Posted 20 months ago by Cupcake Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @ Cupcake Possoms was doing a personal project in Tallish Crest that involved creating a bridge of 100 pigs. I think one of the residents complained, probably about not being able to get into the neighborhood due to the lag it caused on her computer. Then the pigs were removed. I think Possums is wishing she had been informed about the problem.

@ Possoms, I don't think the Dev was trying to be mean, it must have been an urgent situation that needed immediate attention. I hope you won't get disheartened. I believe the Devs here are really a great bunch and will work with you to get resolution. Don't forget this is a testing phase and we need to expect the unexpected.

  • Ah. Yes, Possoms, I do think you should try to keep an open mind. That would never happening when the game was released to the public, but you must remember this IS testing, and if something is prohibiting or limiting people's abilities to test the game, it does need to be removed. The devs of this game are, again, a fabulous group and whoever removed the pigs was by no means doing it out of spite.

  • @ River, several people have tried explaining that to Possum, but she does have a point... the Known Bug - Common Resolutions for beta testing can be better advertised.

People are caught off-guard that the world has a lag problem when there's an over populated public street...  and some of them just don't 'get it' that we're in beta and the world (and other people's computers) can't quite handled an unlimited animal population.
People don't know that walking can sometimes 'stick' or that reloading fixes a lot of problems... those can be communicated better.

Perhaps a notice of some sort on our home page (preferably a dynamic one the TS folks can update, that sticks to the top) about what's currently causing problems and the fix.
For those of us testing and still trying to break stuff, such a monster could let us know what's being worked on, and when a fix has gone out.

I've been getting the feeling that the Bug Icon reports are coming in a deluge and getting hard to slog through... I actually bugged my Wall Pig on Saturday.... didn't get noticed till I said something personally and asked nicely during a live test. The stuff in the floors in the mines changes from time to time... but not always. Same cheesy sammich has been sitting in one spot for a while.

As for the pigs... I suggested it to Possum elsewhere.... the limits of the world will expand daily. The dev's are working their butts off behind the scenes to make things faster, smoother, bigger, and better for us around the clock.... even in the middle of a test. If you have a massive 'personal project'... find a really out of the way street and start small... say 50 pigs.... then next test add another 10. I think you'll find that done incrementally you'll be able to get a lot more than 100 pigs in a place without a problem. You'll have more luck if you find a really out of the way street, rather than a housing block, with no rocks to mine, and a way for people to avoid walking through it if they want... there will be fewer user complaints about not being able to interact with the world.

  • Also, why don't we have another Fullest House contest? That way Possoms can fill her house with as many pigs as she wants without affecting other players, and get a reward for it ;)
Posted 20 months ago by Cupcake Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Possoms: when the pigs were a "piglet bridge," it was fine -- piglets don't move much -- but when I stepped out of my house and found ninety-nine pigs and several chickens milling about, crashing the game, it became a problem.  I asked a developer to help.  He removed eighty-eight pigs.  I'm sure he will put most or all of them back into your yard, if you'd like, since they won't crash other people's games there.  I removed the four sets of feeders and collectors, which I will gladly hand back to you during the next test.  I did check my friends list at the time, but you were not playing, so I couldn't tell you what was going on.  I'm sorry that you were upset.

  • Travinara, I like your suggestion of seeing a notice on our homepage. That would be really helpful.

    Cupcake, good solution!

  • Possoms, I was the one who removed your piggies.  Their removal didn't have much to do with another player making a request, but it was a decision I made in order to deal with some server issues we were experiencing at the time.  I left a note for you and tried to talk to you during the test when I saw you in the Help Channel.

I also filed a Help Case on your account and offered to replace your items and currants, but I have not heard back from you yet.

I'm sorry you feel as though you have been mistreated, but the truth is that we are in Beta and this type of thing is to be expected.  We are always making adjustments inside the game and we need to consider the health of our servers while we have hundreds of players running around the world.

Please find me (jdawg) in the game next time you play, and I'll be more than happy to replace the items you used creating all those piggies!

The contest is still ongoing--it ends in the evening of the first day the game opens again. Possoms is more than welcome to enter!

  • After trying to read everything - I hope I'm not reiterating...
what about an additional micro-window that has current project stats. Could be linked to the GPS module or floating like the chat window.

And if you do create a governmental system, let me know where the 'tree-huggers' are... I play to forget government and law.

Stoot, you are an artist - you will always wonder what should've or could've been. As you said, it's going to be molded over time - you have a great base, though, and what seems to be a greatly talented group of people making your dream(s) come to fruition. I can understand, but you should be secretly proud.

  • I must say The only thing that Sucks about this game, is the fact that i love it so much as a whole, that i never want to leave my house!!! LOL (though, of course i will) And the fact that, when its not on, i sit here hopelessly waiting!! :P
Posted 20 months ago by blackwidow Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yeah - I'm with blackwidow - the thing that sucks about the game is that when it's off I'm constantly waiting, hopin, wishin...

Oh - and the fact that I'm stuck at #6 for zille because the next highest number is over 10,000 more favor. :P

  • I played for a day, and was amazed on how little the game "sucks". It's pretty solid so far!

Technically: Flash is a processor hog, and Flash on Mac is doubly so. There's not a lot to be done about this, but the game as it is now is pretty good for the number of things going on at once. When it lags or locks up, and it blocks my game, that definitely sucks! ;)

One other small gripe: Some of the non-linear travel is confusing, and the lengthy projects can a bit of a grind, and when you are hopelessly low on currants/mood/energy and don't have enough skills to earn more. I hate resorting to mooching loot from other players when I'm running low — I should be able to earn it myself, right?
