Please spare some of the spice trees, especially in the swamps

Now that all the spice trees in Groddle Forest are gone, the only place that grows spice plants are Ix, 'Shimla', Chakra, and Jethimadh...Shimla doesn't seem to have any tree patches, so that doesn't really count. Chakra is predominately dark patches for egg plants (14 streets of eggs to 10 streets for regular trees), so yet another less than optimal tree location - let the regular trees remain gas/bean if people want that there.  So, please, can we have a few spice trees back in Jethimadh?  I know people wanted more gas plants this past game, and I understand that, but the spices are critical for all the cooking skills and even for one of the blocks in blockmaking. At one point we were down to only 15 spice trees in Ix for the entire game world.  We're currently down to 7 spice trees in Ix, and only 5 survived in Jethimadh after planting 7 in the swamps today...so that means only 12 spice trees total in game.

There are now more than enough gas plants in the world (currently 76 world wide)...and there isn't that much use for gas that I've seen.  Needed for 1 block recipe, and I think one egg recipe...is there something else I'm missing?  But still compare that to all the recipes for cooking and drink making...I guess people would rather not eat...which is going to make for some really short game days...

Just please can we have a bit of balance?!  Especially with really only two primary areas that can sustain Spice plants.   Thanks!

  • @Elian: Yes, actually, that plan of mine is in fact a suggestion to the devs about rebalancing what can be planted where. I'm hoping they might consider the idea of rebalancing what can be planted where so that there's some more equality. My suggestion is just one way to do it. And yep, I put that part of my post in the ideas thread, too:)

  • For the record, when test ended I had two Spice, one Bubble and one Gas and one open patch in my yard in the Meadow.

If anyone who is a friend of mine wants to come harvest while I'm online, all they need to do is IM me. (IM before you knock though.) I've also got a bunch of pigs and butterflies and 4 chickens if you need a meat or milk restock.

  • For the record there are ONLY 11 spice plants left in the game. Just in Ix and Jethimadh. If the next run of the game is a restart and not a full reset, there is going to be problems. The Hole to Ix used to be a great spot in Groddle Forest for a couple. No more. There is a group here that claimed to be some sort of villain group and one of their threats was poisoning trees. At first I thought this was funny, but now I'm concerned, because it looks like Spice Trees were heavily targeted.

  • What are the requirements to use tree poison in the first place? I know when I've gone to a vendor who sells it it's been marked as something I'm not qualified to use. Odd for someone who's 20th level. Neither Glitch Strategy nor the Glitch Encyclopedia seem to bother with item use requirements in their details.

  • You need Botany to use tree poison, not any level requirement.

  • @Fokian Have you completed the Botany skill, It takes that to be eligable to use Tree Poison.

I believe there should still be more Spice Plants espiecally in Groddle Forest as it is one of the most visited places in the Glitch world. If most are going to be wiped out why not take most of the recipes away that involve spice? I find that sad and a disappointment.

On the other side a simple solution to the people who wanted more Gas Plants why don't you plant a tree or two in your Glitch's backyard, it would of saved this now growing problem and the Spice plants would still be thriving!

  • I have Botany last I recall. And the Location GreaseMonkey tool still works. It gave me the current report. I just may not have been paying attention since I got that skill. That begs the question as to how fast that skill can be acquired. .. Just a quick check of the skill tree suggests only a few hours. I just wasn't sure if many beta testers could have gained the skill quickly. My rough answer is "yes".

  • I know this is sort of OT, but damn'd if I can find any patches to complete the tree planting quest.. Seems like they're all filled in with dirt piles :(

  • Hey, Fi, let me know next test; you can plant in my basement patches (I'm chopping down trees for badges anyway). I have four patches that I just keep replanting with gas and spice...I can supply the beans as well as the patches. IM me!

  • Ty Rm. will take you up on that.. :) Hope in the future that houses come with an assortment of garden and herb patches.. Already seasoned the beans..just couldn't find any patches to plant them :)

  • I have read some of the posts particularly earlier in the thread - can't remember who said what but I agree that spice plants look right in the forest - and as it has similar scenery, I think they should be allowed in Bortola as well.

  • As of right now, in West Spice there are

2 Patches6 Gas Plants, and 2 Spice Plants

And in East Spice there are

2 Spice Plants, and 3 Gas Plants

Both of these streets should be home to all spice plants, as they have managed since alpha), so perhaps when the next test starts, we can simply go out to those streets, get rid of the gas plants there and put in spice.  Fertlidust them up to good health.  Maybe one or two other streets out there could use an extra spice tree.

To answer Rascalmom's question, both gas and spice do grow out in Chakra Phool, but (as I mentioned earlier) relying on any trees out in the bogs is a joke because of the scarcity of patches, the lack of foot traffic, and that what foot traffic there is is either ignoring the trees to quickly get to the barnacles and fireflies or there for one of the patch tending quests.  Since I use gas plants a lot, I've been trying to maintain them out in Chakra Phool.

At any rate, it looks like (based on the changed numbers in W/E Spice) some player/s went on a poisoning spree. Even with the hit to mood, it's still too easy to remove vast swaths of trees, especially if you collude with someone and the rest of the world is tied up at a party.  Tree management has been an issue ever since the early early alpha days of Glitch and I don't expect to see an answer to that one anytime soon.  The last few tests, the constant refrain from newer players is 'where do I find a patch' because there is a tutorial reinforcement quest that asks for a patch to be tended (let's get rid of it - how about not letting players out of the start street until they tend a patch there instead?) and then two other skills quests that require patches.  This continues to be a strain on things, since usually an older player need to go poison a patch for them.  I think this also plants the seed (heh) of havoc in any newer player who desires to kill things in game (this based on my experience in helping a few newer players out).

So, yea, you know, I wasn't keen on bringing back the spice plants to the forest (since I think I get what the devs are trying to do), but I'm leaning that way now because the bogs will not be able to support healthy trees until players start moving out there (sorry, herbs didn't draw that many people out there), patches are still in too high a demand and poison is too easy to use and misuse, and spice is something that is used in just too many recipes for it to be as scarce as it is.  Also, comparative advantage is a fail right now, for too many reasons to list in a comment, for both specialization and for these few areas for one tree to happen.

  • Wow :( I guess I should have looked at that location script sooner. I'll help replant the spice in Ix if I get there before the rest of you do :p

I didn't know about that 'seed of havoc' but that makes me a bit worried :\
I'm not sure about getting rid of the patches quests, but +1 to at least everything else you said, zee.

  • Wow, I didn't even know the spice trees were gone. Kind of glad I planted one in my backyard now so I don't have to travel all over the place.

  • Jeez, I was in Ix about 1.5 hours before close and those roads were still ALL spice, then I ran up to Choru during the last hour (quite fun because empty). That poisoning spree really did happen right at the end. Yeah, zeeberk, definitely a problem keeping trees alive in the swamps. And gosh darn, those spice looked so gorgeous in the Forest:)

  • yeah, RM, I and a couple of others 'fixed' East and West Spice a few hours before the end of the test, after E.Spice was found planted with only one spice tree.  I suspect there is some griefing going on, unless maybe there was one of those all-gas projects that people were trying to complete, because after I returned with more poison, the two baby spice trees I had just planted had been replaced by gas.

also, excellent point about just how good spice trees look in the forest - I hadn't realized it, because the two big areas with nothing but endless beans and cherries just makes me kinda twitchy, but you are so right!

  • Two separate issues:

What trees are planted where ends up being based on whoever cares the most.  Clearly, there are some dedicated Gas enthusiasts who want more vapour.  If you care about Spice trees being in certain places, then spend some time cleaning it up.  I do think it's pretty lame to change the trees in West/East Spice into all Gas, but if you care enough to rectify that, put your money where your mouth is.

As far as game restrictions are concerned, I am surprised Spice was removed from Groddle Forest.  That's more of a newbie area, and spice is used in a lot of newbie quests and early skills.  As someone pointed out earlier, Spice trees look great there as well.  I'm really surprised to see them go.

+1 to  Rascalmom's suggestions for what should be allowed where, that seems rather well thought-out!

  • Thanks to all the glitchers who replanted East and West Spice (and other areas in the game world)...the Spice streets were both heavily traveled today for allspice by the time I was able to get on.  I have a few extra spice beans in case we need them...semi-spice balance has been restored!  (((hugs))) to all who understand how valuable this commodity is, especially to those of us that like to cook.

  • Does it make sense to hire lower level characters to tend plants?  What's the minimum requirement of the game to make that feasible?  I'd so much rather get quests from players than my silly rock.

  • Yes! Thanks to everyone who took this seriously. I do my part and I keep spice beans so I can plant them whenever I find an eligible patch. Thanks to everyone else who did this too.
