Being included in Glich Remote should be an option...not forced upon us. Kind of like a phone book!

I have recently (for my own personal benefit of course) leveled my entire front yard to make room for as many herb plots as possible. Now I'm more than aware of the entire "share" mantra in this game and it's a big part of why I like this game. HOWEVER, I have recently been the victim of multiple herb pillagings, as I'm sure many of you with the same type of yard experience. Now usually I'm ok with the occasional glitch coming and benefiting from my (hey! share and share alike right?) but there are some glitches that just harvet and run. I never had issues prior to adding all these plots and I realzed it was because of GltichRemote.com.
I think it a useful reource to make friends and find specific items that fellow glitchen are more than happy to sell or trade for.
But as the subject of this post says, without trying to sound redundant, being part of glitch remote should be an option. Just as you have the option to be listed in the telephone book.
Again, I dont mind if people come and harvest and replant and share and all that jazz, but Glitch Remote seems to attract a lot of..... how can I mildly put this... less desireable glitchen?
Sorry to rant and rave but I had to get this out.
As you can tell, I'm not a normal poster or not one to complan (too much anyway...I AM a woman lol) but this is something that has definately irked me over the past few months. It makes me sad that I can't plant and come back a few hours later and find my plots ravished.
And I know what will be said... "if you dont want your crops stolen, contain them to your back yard" yada yada yada.
No one can blame me for expressing my thoughts and opinions.

Anyway, that's all. have a great day everyone.

Yours truly,
A sad glitch named Izabella

  • I fully agree with you and yes, the Loud majority are going to tell you to put gardens only in your back yard. I'm killing off all but 2 trees in my front yard today. I don't want visitors and it is the only way to hopefully have as few as possible.

  • More likely they find you through Glitch Routes than Glitch Remote...
Just click leave and you're not included anymore on Glitch Routes

  • @ WeavingTheWeb, several friends of mine and my daughter did that with the routes and Still had people coming and messing up their garden plots and no replanting. They were never part of any routes so I do believe people are getting the info from glitch remote also.

  • Does GR actually show what specific herbs are growing in your Home Street?  I thought it could only see them in SDBs.

  • Other players can jump onto your street simply by following links from the post you make here.

Which is one of the things that makes "stay offa my street" threads amusing to see appear.

They're gonna get you, now that you've made yourself known.

  • hmmm.... .Weaving, how could I be in a glitch route if I never requested to be part of it?? Also, I tried it nonetheless and it gave me an error stating I wasn't part of the route so there was no way to remove me.
Thanks for the info though :)

  • Glitch Routes works through the API, you don't have to be part of a route.

People can come to your street even if you have yourself removed from every site that works through the API

  • well said Dorgan. however, it doesn't really matter because they're doing it anyway.
    oh well....

I'm just going to make sure that I harvest my herbs before i log off.
If theres nothing to harvest, theres nothing to steal. :)

  • Don't forget the new visiting stones, if you opted into that, then you're also getting new visitors from there. Also bear in mind that herb gardening harvesting has gone extra crazy this weekend, with Stoot's announcement about about changing Yellow Crumb, etc. Things may calm down in a few weeks when that is sorted out.

  • @ E D D I E, if there is, I haven't found it, makes me wonder if the OP and others have actually checked GR themselves to see what can be found about their streets

  • Ok, good info Weaving.
@Dorgan, I never said "stay offfa my street."

I'm well aware that in this day and age, thats a bit much to ask for.

  • Also if it makes you feel any better, where I live your landline phone number automatically gets put in the phonebook and you have to pay if you don't want it in there. Cell phone numbers are unlisted though, so a lot of people are opting to have cell phones and no home phone numbers, which is causing headaches for those poor phonebook makers (and the telemarketers who use the phonebooks to pester people.)

  • If you don't want your home street to be messed around with, don't put anything on your home street. It's not that complicated.

  • There are a lot of posts about the "only add gardens in your back yard" and that the "street is really public"... so I will just tell you, that you can opt out to GlitchRemote... just sending me a glitch mail saying that. I need to do that by hand, so I can't add an option in the web page.
Izabella I just removed you from the lists. your home street will show if someone clicks on a signpost, but will *not* show in any lists. if you want at some point to be again in the database, again just send me a glitch mail
(it can take a few minutes until the change propagate to all servers)

  • Izabella, that part of my comment was directed more at one of the other thread respondants. I know that there is a big difference between "keep out, all strangers" and not wanting your gardens overrun by the locust-glitchen.

Good luck with your gardening. My medium herb patch on my street has worked out ok so far. (oh, noes! delurked!)

  • you'll still be in the directory at the glitch routes site, but I think there's an opt out request thing somewhere on the site.  Or contact Boom and Bust and if it can be done he will.

You'll still be in the API though for any future sites or for anyone using their own personal system.  But that's part of the agreement for opening a Glitch account.  There's no opting out of the API.

  • The Glitch Routes site does let you request that your data be removed, whereas Glitch Remote does not.  I think it's a nice option and I think people are smart enough to understand it's not the same thing as getting a private street.

  • There are lots of ways for a Glitch to find their way to someone's street. When I was going for the Gregarious Gunther badge (visit 503 home streets) I would follow signposts at random, click on names in chat and follow the link to their street, search for player names and pick one at random and visit there. Those are all options offered by Glitch itself. I also try to be a good guest; shuck and replant, not leave rock nubs, etc. I don't think it's fair to blame a useful resource like Glitch Remote for something that may or may not be the source of the problem.

  • Aside from API tools also consider that before your yard was forgetable to the random passerby and by adding so many plots those "less desirable" glitchen now have you bookmarked.

When the herb seed nerf goes into effect there will be less incentive.

Link for yet another API driven site :) collect them all

  • There are various ways in which people can find out what streets contain a particular kind of resource, such as herb gardens.  Glitch Remote is only one of these. As more players join the game, there are likely to be more diverse methods used, including some that you may not ever become aware of.

The availability of information about resources on home streets is built into the design of Glitch itself. So changing Glitch Remote will not stop other players from learning that you have herb gardens on your street.
Posted 87 days ago by Splendora Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Nuveena, I'm not blaming GR for that. I wasn't aware I could message UxRoot to get my street removed from it. I even said that it was a useful resource. I never expected that I would stop ALL traffic from my street.
It's how someone feels when they get harassed by telemarketers for just being listed in the phone book.
Posted 87 days ago by Izabella Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I was told when I started that it's really rare for people to trash your gardens, not replant, etc. So far every day nonfriends visit my street, one of these "really rare" events happen. (Not just after the YC announcement either.) Of course the usual awesome players are extremely willing to come help when this happens, but I'm not willing to accept the hassle in the first place. I opted out of the visiting stones the day after I opted in and got trashed, and am now moving all my gardening to the back, as well as my wood trees. I plan to opt back in when my home street is devoid of anything too easily trashed, like trees, rocks, and other resources.

I really wish I didn't have to do this; maybe I just have worse luck with random visitors than most, or maybe I'm just way too annoyed by discourtesy, or maybe there really are more jerkhats now than there used to be. But since it is what it is, I'm making what seems to me the easiest change.

  • The API part of glitch has a bunch of information, including info about all players and their streets.  Because Tiny Speck has said "yes, go ahead and create third-party tools based on the API" you can basically consider it just another way to get to your street, just as there are various ways in-game/on the glitch.com pages to do it.
Posted 87 days ago by diaveborn ♥ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm one of the "streets are public, keep stuff you don't want anyone messing with in the back yard" advocates but even I find taking things and never replanting really rude, especially with herbs since you can shuck for seeds (for crops sometimes there won't be a piggy available).

Regardless I think what you actually want is a way to be excluded from the API (i.e. Glitch would not send your data to outside websites and would keep it strictly within the website/game itself). Even then, though, someone may bump into you or find you on the forums, check your street out, find out you have lots of herb plots and bookmark you.

@ZenMonkey, I'm sorry to hear about your wood trees! I'm in a wood tree route in a third party website and although sometimes I have logged in to find my trees with one or two branches it is very often that they are fully grown - people use Fertilidust on them more often than not, though I suppose if you have few trees most people wouldn't want to spend their powder on them (it's more advantageous to spend it on a large number of trees - I have 14).

Although wood trees do give more planks if you harvest them at full growth, so it's advantageous to take care of the ones you're going to harvest.

  • There's quite a few players who enjoy fixing 'trashed streets'. The other day someone asked on chat if anyone was interested in coming to help fix their trashed street - six of us responded and everything was in tip-top shape in a couple moments. Of course, this makes it harder for you to get the bounty of your front yard resources - but the part of the issue that is your street is trashed, and yeah, you shouldn't have to fix it (it shouldn't be left that way, but) - there's players who would rush there if only they knew it was in bad shape. So why not mention it on chat?

As a slightly more 'devious' work around, with some pleasant interaction advantages, how about 'hire a newbie' to tend the street?

I currently 'employ' 4 fairly new players to come to my street and do 'whatever can be done' whenever they feel like it and can. For me, that's mostly stuff that doesn't become trashed at all (lots of critters) and my goal is increasing my daily IMG bonus through visitors interactions, but it also means that 4 people who might log in at any time are very likely to come to my street once a game day if playing and take care of whatever they find there. This is a more proactive method, and one more likely to result in your street regularly having something growing when you log in - but really, call on global - helping hands are likely to rush there for the work.

  • Well, even 'streets are public, keep it in your back yard' people can be opposed to the locust-glitches who go around harvesting and not replanting.  Because:  even if the street does not 'belong' to the person whose house it is on, it belongs to everybody, and if some of the everybodies are ripping off the crops and not replanting, they're stealing from us all.
Posted 87 days ago by Feldspar Gravity Subscriber! | Permalink
  • True, Dorgan. I am firmly in the "streets are public" camp, but that does not mean that everything people can do as permitted by the game mechanics should also be done, if one tries to be a decent member of the community. There's a difference between things that are possible through the game mechanics/allowed by the TOS and things that are socially acceptable, with the latter sometimes being a bit hard to define because different people have different standards of what is "proper". It's like in real life: The fact that, say, the small plaza in front of my house is public doesn't mean that I'd approve of people littering there, or being really loud and obnoxious intentionally.

I think it's not particularly nice, but I've also seen plenty of people on my street saying things like "i'm just watering, trying to break my irrigator" or people who like the img that tending gives them

in my experience, if you just stop caring about your home street, it pretty much takes care of itself, sometimes it might be a mess, or I might hear it was a mess and when I look at it, it's all fine.   I don't expect to harvest herbs there, I look after it  a bit if I remember to go there,  but it's more for other people than for me.

I am on the herb route, though, and people who use that seem to be pretty awesome.

  • Even on the herb route, sometimes all you do is clean and plant because you happen to be behind a herb pillager =) I always assumed it was a low level player with a broken hoe until I caught up to such a person one day and it turned out that this particular individual was a high level player who felt they were doing everyone else a favour by leaving behind the cleaning so that someone else could get the iMG from doing it.

Personally I feel they could have made a better arguement for that if they had left seeds behind for replanting by others ... lol.

  • I for one love glitchremote, market, etc, its how I make most of my money. With that said though, I think this was another feature implemented with very little user input, and the fact that users can not opt out of the API search is a huge overlook in the implementation of this feature. But this really all stems from the original problem, which is a lack of land management and player abuse tools. TS has basically shrugged off the lack of tools by claiming all streets are public, yet that is contradictory because when a player is banned by another player, they can no longer visit that street. Not very public then it seems. I want full control over my street, its API listing, the access to that street, the access and "actions" available on my street resources, etc. Either that, or I would want a block system which does not take streets into account, only towers and homes. Streets need to be fully public, or we need more options to manage them.

  • *shrug* Some folk are just unlucky :) I suppose I'm inviting disaster by saying it, but my 124 plots that I placed are almost always well cared for. I think inviting more traffic rather than less has actually helped. I joined the yellow crumb route and now I get tens of visitors a gameday all willing to fix the problems left behind by a few glitchen who were in a hurry, or didn't feel like replanting :)

  • We need a feature to set our streets public or private, that´s all I can bring to this.

Edit: False! I got one more suggestion: instead of locking the street, objects on our streets could have an individual feature of locked or unlocked, you could set your herb plots to "locked" and everything else "unlocked" so you can manage what is public and what is not.

They always will be. Stoot himself has said this, although I can't find the link (anyone happen to have that bookmarked?).

  • I found the same problem when I had garden's on my home-street. I found it quite expensive to be purchasing seed. I didn't mind the clean up because I get IMG, however I too would love to see the garden grow. So I put gardens in my back yard and like this better.
If I take from a home-street garden I make sure I have seed first or if I can shuck I replant that way.

  • It sucks that your things keep getting taken, some people are just inconsiderate. When I take a crop or herb I always try to replant exactly the same thing I took.

  • Everybody says "public streets are public" and that really does not address the real issue here: "What´s my motivation to maintain a public street with advanced resources if there is no equal reward to it?"

Once I got a couple of herb gardens on my public street. Once. I tought to myself: "I´m going to get this out here so people can help themselves, it will be WONDERFULL, everybody will come in and do stuff in my street and I will get a healthy IMG reward, I will clean and plant once in a while and the others will do the same and HERBS FOR ALL YAY!"... a couple of weeks later I nuked them from orbit because the default state of my street herbs garden was:

1.- All herb gardens full of weed all the time.
2.- Nobody ever never of the nevers ever cleaned them.
3.- All players visiting saw the gardens and left, doing nothing on my street.
4.- All work and no IMG makes Mikah a dull boy.

Now I got my streets full of fruit trees because, hey, trees are easy to maintain, everybody comes in and do whatever and I got IMG. Cool. You want herbs? GO AWAY.

Before you say "the only motivation is to be nice and that´s enough" lemme tell you, that´s not enough to keep up with the gardens, they can be a handful and my "Nice-O-Meter" depletes quickly when nobody is nice to me in return.

And of course I know you get extra IMG and drops from the gardens when you clean and water them, I´m aware of that, BUT, and this is a big BUT, the idea of public street giving you IMG when anbody visits and do stuff in your street is there as a motivation for you to have cool stuff on your street, so:

1.- If you got a easy resource like a fruit tree, it never depletes and is allways available, meaning you got your free IMG everyday with no effort.
2.- If you got a garden, it the garden is full of weeds then you don´t get ANY free IMG, meaning you are in a disadvantage and your payoff is MORE work.

    Not nice guys, not nice.
