New key system to share your home with friends

Remember how much you loooonged to have roommates in all those hard-earned homes, cottages, and tree houses? You had friends you wanted to be able to drop by whenever they felt like it (whether they were online or not), loved ones to share all of your possessions with, and appointed caretakers to feed and pamper your piggies while you were away.

Well now, we've made all that possible. To share your home with others, all you need is to give 'em a key. It's pretty darn simple. You now have a keyring icon that lives to the left of your inventory. This is where alll of the magic happens: the keyring menu that will let you share a key with a friend (if you have a house) and view keys others have shared with you.

Anyone with a key to your house can (1) enter it at any time, and (2) have access to everything in your house (cabinets, gardens, etc), with the exception of icons.

To make the pilgrimage to a friends home you have a key to, you'll have the option of either setting it as a destination or teleporting right over.

So try it out! Put down the proverbial welcome mat and let someone in.

  • My sister and I have our own houses. Is it possible for us to share keys so that each of us can live in both houses? Is that considered cheating?
Posted 13 months ago by Bu-chan Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I don't believe that's cheating Meongu. As a matter of fact that falls under what hitherto said:

Regarding questions along the lines of "is it okay to have someone 'move in' with me?"... of course! That was one of the main reasons we did this!

Multiple accounts online at the same time is cheating, but not two players sharing houses.

Yes you should. I mean, who knows what mischief he might get into. Tracking lumps of earth, loam, and guano through your nice house.

  • Well if they provided their own, I wouldn't mind people tracking dirt-related goods through my house.

That said, I love it, thanks devs! :D

  • As anyone tested what happens when you have given out a key to someone and then sell the house? Does the key disappear? And when you buy a new home do you have to give them a new key? (This is how I assume it would work.)

  • I'd be down with this if my cabinet was also lockable. Feel free to mess with my garden, trees, animals (as long as you don't poison or pignap or free any of them). Do not go into my closet and poke around. That door is closed when company is visiting for a reason.

You do not need to poke at my hoards. They might fall out and clutter up the floor! I have them arranged just so, and if I lean against the cabinet door and slam it a little, it still shuts.

  • As it happens, I had JUST (within minutes) iconized the last set of emblems to complete my Icon Collection, and I thought THAT was the 'reward' for having done so!
I like the idea OK, I guess, but I kinda play alone and all of my Glitch friends have their own places. I can see how some would get a big kick outta this, so it's def a good thing, and good thinking.

Lorelei-, you mean hoards, not hordes. Hoards are huge stockpiles, hordes are uncontrollable multitudes. OK, wait, maybe you have a point there!

BTW: there was no trophy or anything at the completion of Iconization of all Giants' emblems- how come? That's a pretty good accomplishment worthy of note- see new post.

  • Lord Bacon-O, you are correct. The key will disappear, and you will have to give them a new key to your new house.
Posted 13 months ago by Fresca Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I did indeed mean hoards. D'oh! I posted hastily while doing other things at the same time and I failed to spellcheck myself. That's actually one of my peeves. I will fix it.

  • Love the feature ^^ Still, I hope everyone will be careful with it to avoid a situation where a new "friend" has taken/done something they shouldn't have. I only give my key to those I trust aka my real life friends playing the game.

  • This is FANTASTIC!!!!  Thank you so much for making this.  My family plays with me and we're swapping goodies all the time.  But we're not always on the same schedule.  This will be great for us.  Thanks so much for all your hard work... LOVE THIS ADDITION!!!!!   (((HUGS)))

  • So, in theory, someone could create a second account, play with only it long enough to earn the currants to buy a 50k house, give the key to their main, probably never log back in (no need), and have a second house with a fair bit of legwork?
Posted 13 months ago by Rodger Subscriber! | Permalink
  • That would be something for staff to interpret under the "unfair advantage" part of the Community Guidelines.

Your alt can't be used to give your main an unfair advantage in the game.

  • I have a house in the swamp for herbs, but want another house, preferably a 50k one. If it's allowed I wanna know lol.

  • I like this because as a prior poster said, I can now leave things off for my SO instead of using the mail one item at a time; woohoo!
The downside is - omg mister popular is already posting a list of rules for the worthies he's distributing keys to.  So.. apparently some folks are going to use this as a popularity contest, line up and get your keys here, and yet - wants the plebes who visit to keep their dirty mits off of his things.  Sorry, that's just laughably sad.  Good luck with that....  ;)

  • Ok, I may have missed it in this thread, but will we get the ability to refuse a key given to us?
Posted 13 months ago by Piece of Serenity Subscriber! | Permalink
  • A very nice feature indeed if you want to share keys.  But what if you don't?.  I don't know if i missed the answers to these questions, but i was wondering if it is possible to block keys?  if i block someone, does that block their keys too?  Can I block keys but not the person?  cause the way it is now, you don't have a choice; someone will give you a key without asking your permission.  what if i want to decline keys?  there is no option to send it back to the owner.  I would have to ask the owner to take back his/her key.
Posted 13 months ago by Cat A. Tonic Subscriber! | Permalink
  • No you cannot "block" keys. They're essentially permissions to enter a house and not actual items.
Posted 13 months ago by Mal'akh Subscriber! | Permalink
  • If someone gives you a key you don't want, try blocking them for a few minutes and then unblocking them.  That might break the connection.

  • I think Cats1524 and Piece of Serenity make a good point...shouldn't there be a "deny key" feature? I'd hate for someone to randomly hand me a key and then later accuse me of taking something (unlikely, but possible). I s'pose you could ask someone to revoke a key, but doesn't that just stir unnecessary conflict? Maybe denying a key to someone is conflict, too, but it seems to me that it would be much less conflict-causing than having to ask someone to revoke a key already given.

As for someone posting rules on the forum regarding use of their personal property, that's all very well. But for me, handing out a key is a personal thing, so I would expect that the friends I give keys to would respect my privacy. If I agree to be roommates with someone, then yes, we'd probably both have to come up with some rules regarding use of resources. If I decided to open my house up to the public (Giants forbid!), then I would most likely drop a note in the entryway, regarding my "house rules." But I can't imagine going around handing out my keys to random folks. I get that this is a game of cooperation and trust in community and such (PLURP, all! :D), but if you give your key out randomly to strangers, well, that's probably not too smart, if you value your stuff...and most of us do. :)

Other than that, I LOVE the new key feature...makes it easier to keep my alt accounts in order, and I no longer have to worry about leaving for an extended length of time, providing a friend is willing to house-sit. Kudos, devs! :)

  • I wonder if, in the future of course, one could set permissions. Like someone could be allowed to enter, interact with crops and trees and animals, but have a set permission on whether or not a person could interact with the cabinet. Maybe something like levels on friends too. Eh, it's a thought.

  • Just had a nasty surprise when I tried to teleport home after a rook attack, and the key ring told me "You've already done that too much today!"

If the keyring teleport home does indeed use up a map teleport, there ought to be some text explicitly saying so, like there is when you actually click on the map to teleport. Could the devs possibly add some text like that to the "Confirm?" dialogue box? "This will use a map teleport. You have 2 remaining." Like that.

  • The key icon looks strange with the rest of the interface. No other icon looks as desaturated, nor do any of them have dark outlines. They stand out in a weird way.

  • I'm confused about why the decision was made to allow open access to the cabinet by default. That should be the "hallowed" storage you can use to lock up your true "valuables" IMO. At this point, at least let us have the OPTION of locking our cabinets please?

I still love this feature though, thanks TS!
Posted 13 months ago by Chuck Stone Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It is probably the default because many people that wanted something like this wanted roommates (close friends or significant others) to reside full-time in the same house; those people would need the same (or in this case, nearly the same) level of access as the person who owns the house.

Many other people wanted something like this so they could let friends have access to their trees and animals when they weren't online (but not necessarily all of their worldly goods), or to be able to have someone look out for their animals while on vacation.

It was likely easiest to grant all access for the implementation so they could see how the new system was going to work out, before they added in extra options and convoluted the process of tracking down bugs.

Having a choice on the level of access would be good (as TS knows and many have suggested) and will probably be (or more likely already has been) considered and maybe implemented someday along the timescale of "soon".

  • Just another word of caution for folks gleefully passing out keys: I have had a dozen people, half of which I have never had a prolonged conversation with, grant me keys. I'm honest and would never take anyone's stuff (I am more likely to give stuff away to brand-new noobs and friends), but not everyone is like that. You are granting TOTAL ACCESS to your home. Please be careful who you choose to give a key to.

  • The 'hallowed' storage you should use to lock up your true 'valuables' is your personal inventory. Anything not directly on your avatar's 'belt' is out there in the world and potentially accessable to somebody whenever you are not logged on.

We all started out in the game homeless and essentially that hasn't changed with regard to our most important 'stuff.' Everything in your house really 'belongs' to the house according to the game's programming, as we find out quickly when moving if we forget and leave something behind in the old house. Carrying everything is risky, though. It's pretty easy to slip and donate a random item to a shrine, which could be your beta pickle or GNG block.

I'd hate to see changes to the game's code made that 'lock down' our cabinets in a way that introduces new 'bugs' into the code. There are already issues with people being 'locked out' from being able to remove Gnomes from their newly purchased houses that other players left behind. I can see similar problems cropping up if 'cabinet locking' were implemented. Right now the model is simple: you own the house, the house 'owns' anything in it and you thus 'inherit' ownership of anything in the house.. Making it more complicated could be perilous.

  • Just a note about the "roommate" aspect and the only difference being only the actual owner will be alerted to knocks at the door.   The Got Milk? quest, and probably others that require you do something in "your yard," doesn't care if you paid for half the house if your name's not on the deed.  ;)

Not a big deal, just something to be aware of.

Back to transporting piggies, feeder, and milker back to Salatu from the bog.

  • AWESOME!  I'm so in love with this feature!!  It's exactly what I asked for!!!

My only hope is that we do get control of cabinet locking at some point or gain ability to craft/buy a wall safe item to stay in our home (so i don't ever have to worry about my yeti or GNG), and that we gain the ability go TP directly into our own home via the keyring menu...

Great Job TS!  Thank you so much :D
