Topic

Everyone has a side.

Let me get some things clear, with all of you. I am not a whiny person. I don't get upset over small things. The incident that happened has been changed so many times by one side's of the story, that I want to clear some things up.

I haven't been playing the last few weeks, so I came back yesterday to talk of herbs. I went to the herb gardens to see if there were any empty spots. There were none. I went to leave. I saw a person come in, and say "Gimmie all you got." Then, "HEY HOMBRE. YOU GONNNA GIMME SHIT?" I said nothing. He then proceeded to take the herbs that people were waiting by, as soon as they popped up. Jerk move, but I still said nothing. Then he said "I'mma rape you all"

At that point, I messaged him. We are both greeters, and I didn't feel that was they type of behavior we were supposed to represent. I * politely * told him it wasn't cool for him to say that kind of thing, and that it was sort of rude to take flowers from new players that were trying to do things. He responded with "And who are you?" And started telling me that he would say whatever he liked, and I was so "low". who was I to tell him that wasn't polite? He then announced in chat "GIVE NUTMEG EVERYTHING YOU HAVE OR SHE'LL HATE YOU."

Please note, at this point, I have not planted, nor harvested a single thing. It wasn't about the plants. I wish I had saved the log of all the rude things he IM'ed to me, but I didn't, only the local chat. I blocked him, because he continued harassing me via IM. SEVERAL other players in the same street had a problem with the things he said (and things he did, which I know isn't agains the ToS) - if they all chose to report him, I have no clue. He is blaming me because I had the "nerve" to stand up to him (me being a low life and all.)

He says:
*Him* in reply to *other person* "Of course I always pushed the limits, it's my way of playing and adding to the game for everyone else. Someone needs to do it, and I do it in a way where I respect everyone, while acting out a crazy character everyone loves and hates. I've never changed here. My mistake was using a one line phrase of the English language that I should not have said. One mistake that lasted 1 moment of time on one map. They could have just asked me not to say that and I would have agreed respectfully and I'd understand, but because they were mad at my herb harvesting, they would take any excuse to get me out of the game, so reported me. It's as simple as that."57 mins ago

It is NOT as simple as that. I. Do. Not. Care. About Herbs. If he wants to be known as a jerk, that's his problem. It's when he says inappropriate things that is the issue. He has not shown any remorse. He likened my issue to someone being afraid of the color yellow in another post. After originally claiming he had been hacked. I asked him not to say it, and he belittled it, and continued harassing me via IM.

He made his own bed. To those of you who say I am being "too sensitive" about the situation, remove me from your friends list. If you know me, you know that I LOVE joking around, and am far from conservative. However, I don't put up with slurs or making light of situations that are not to be made light of.

  • (I did not write this, but I felt it explained my point better than I could articulate.)

    Also, from:
To Those Who Don't Have A Problem With Rape Jokes

"…this post in particular is addressed to men, not because women don’t rape and women don’t make/laugh at rape jokes and not because men can’t be raped, but because, by nature of the existing gender disparity, men are in a unique position to be taken seriously when they raise objections to casual language and humor regarding rape. Men are also in a unique position to prove to rapists and douchebags that not all men rape or take rape lightly by being able to embody living proof of that fact.To all those men who don’t think the rape jokes are a problem:

I get it—you’re a decent guy. I can even believe it. You’ve never raped anybody. You would NEVER rape anybody. You’re upset that all these feminists are trying to accuse you of doing something, or connect you to doing something, that, as far as you’re concerned, you’ve never done and would never condone.

And they’ve told you about triggers, and PTSD, and how one in six women is a survivor, and you get it. You do. But you can’t let every time someone gets all upset get in the way of you having a good time, right? Especially when it doesn’t mean anything. Rape jokes have never made YOU go out and rape someone. They never would; they never could. You just don’t see how it matters.

I’m going to tell you how it does matter. And I tell you this because I genuinely believe you mean it when you say you don’t want to hurt anybody, and that it’s important to you to do your best to be a decent and good person, and that you don’t see the harm. And I genuinely believe you when you say you would never associate with a rapist and you think rape really is a very bad thing.

Here is why I refuse to take rape jokes sitting down…

Because 6% of college-aged men, slightly over 1 in 20, will admitto raping someone in anonymous surveys, as long as the word “rape” isn’t used in the description of the act—and that’s the conservative estimate. Other sources double that number (pdf).

A lot of people accuse feminists of thinking that all men are rapists. That’s not true. But do you know who think all men are rapists?

    Rapists do.

They really do. In psychological study, the profiling, the studies, it comes out again and again.

Virtually all rapists genuinely believe that all men rape, and other men just keep it hushed up better. And more, these people who really are rapists are constantly reaffirmed in their belief about the rest of mankind being rapists like them by things like rape jokes, that dismiss and normalize the idea of rape.

If one in twenty guys (or more) is a real and true rapist, and you have any amount of social activity with other guys like yourself, then it is almost a statistical certainty that one time hanging out with friends and their friends, playing Halo with a bunch of guys online, in a WoW guild, in a pick-up game of basketball, at a bar, or elsewhere, you were talking to a rapist. Not your fault. You can’t tell a rapist apart any better than anyone else can. It’s not like they announce themselves.

But, here’s the thing. It’s very likely that in some of these interactions with these guys, at some point or another, someone told a rape joke. You, decent guy that you are, understood that they didn’t mean it, and it was just a joke. And so you laughed.

Or maybe you didn’t laugh. Maybe it just wasn’t a very funny joke. So maybe you just didn’t say anything at all.

And, decent guy who would never condone rape, who would step in and stop rape if he saw it, who understands that rape is awful and wrong and bad, when you laughed? When you were silent?

That rapist who was in the group with you, that rapist thought that you were on his side. That rapist knew that you were a rapist like him. And he felt validated, and he felt he was among his comrades.

    You. The rapist’s comrade.

And if that doesn’t make you feel sick to your stomach, if that doesn’t make you want to throw up, if that doesn’t disturb you or bother you or make you feel like maybe you should at least considernot participating in that kind of humor anymore, not abiding it in your presence, not greeting it with silence…

Well, maybe you aren’t as opposed to rapists as you claim. "

  • Sounds like you both are trying to paint each other in different lights. He's a rapist your a feminist...blah blah blah! From a guys stand point I think it's incredibly insensitive for you to bash on men just cause one immature teenager decided to make a joke, all be it a rather distasteful one. Just cause you have some statistics and generally know what your talking about doesn't mean your opinion is the right one either. Maybe you both should take this kinda of debate elsewhere!

  • You've been a superstar through all of this, and handled it much, much better than I would have. I've tried to stay somewhat removed from the discussion for my own sake, but I just wanted to say you have my support.

I'm sort of new to Glitch, but the way the mod team has handled this has made a long-term player out of me. Rape should never, ever be joked about for the reasons you've stated, and it's taken lightly far too often, so the staff's quick response has impressed me very much, and I'm very grateful. Thank you.

Jordy: Please don't take this down the "you're just bashing men!" route. The offender in question is one particular man who has treated sexual assault like a lark, and that should never, ever be tolerated.
Posted 12 months ago by Shiromisa Kaya Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Jordy, I NEVER bashed on men, and I NEVER called him a rapist. Read the things people write before accusing them. If you read, the second thing I posted is a blog (that I did not write) about why rape jokes aren't funny.

I love men. A little too much actually. Most of my guy friends say I'm more of a guy than a girl, so I'm for sure not a feminist.

  • I'm pretty sure being a feminist doesn't mean disliking men, it just means wanting women to be treated well! Heck, I'm pretty mucha feminist and I'm not even a woman.

Rape jokes are totally uncool, in any situation. Please stop making them, everyone!
Posted 12 months ago by Pyrrhocorax Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I mean this post only focuses on men raping women the opposite is also possible and thus should be noted. Focusing on one side not the other is what makes it man bashing. Your only speaking out about the former becausethe offender was a guy and your a woman.

Anyways, yall are giving him exactly what he wants...playing into his immature need for attention.

  • Right now, I don't think it matters how you feel about what went on NutMeg, because it's out of your hands - he was reported, they agreed.  This drama should be over, but MM won't stop posting about it. And role play is fine - but I don't think rpging a hateful person belongs in this game.

This whole thing really has annoyed me, I thought at least this game would be mostly free of drama. I looked at MM's profile since some people commented about how he was nice in beta - take a look at one of his groups, drunken pirates. It's mostly role play stuff - but he brags about some girl rearranging her bags, she put one down and he took it and he seems to think he's just awesome for doing that.

He is using the term role play just as an excuse to be an asshole. Right now I wish he would role play as someone who can't type.

Posted 12 months ago by JordyChrist Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Pyrrhocorax: Good. ^^ I'm a pretty outspoken feminist myself.

Jordy: Yes, that's true, men can be raped. But sexual assault predominantly affects women, and the situation here is a man threatening a woman, so can we please focus on that for the moment?
Posted 12 months ago by Shiromisa Kaya Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Thanks for speaking up NuTMeG! I am not a feminist but I am one of those 1 out 6 women that is a victim. Sexual assault was not funny then or is it funny now and it DOES bother me that men or women toss the word rape around like it was just another word like hello. Rape is a form of aggression, control, and demoralization.. nothing loving in it whatsoever. The world does not belong in a game or is it part of having fun. It is a term of a bully because that really is what a rapist is... the lowest of the low bully. You have no idea until it happens to you how being sexually assaulted harms you mentally and how it takes a long time to get over if ever. Physically your ok but mentally it wrecks you.

You have my full support on this NuTMeG and Jordy I pray and hope you never have to go through the hell I went through to become a whole person again. My prayers are with you.

Some very small number of people will take this as an opportunity to criticize you, at a time when you are already feeling very upset. I am sorry that some people think that is a good choice, and I wish NutMeg very well.

Yeah he said some things, but he got suspended. You'll never see this guy in your real life. This is just the Internet. FYI: Assholes live in it.
Don't let some guy you'll never meet get the better of you.

  • Rape jokes are totally uncool.  It is not a topic for humor.  However, women can rape men.  There is specific hardware that can be purchased at adult novelty stores to make it possible, but said hardware is not even necessary.

This whole incident sounds like what would happen if a dorm floor full of guys were all taking turns typing into the screen on this one 'guys' account.  I have no idea whatsoever if that is what was happening, but it sure sounds weird enough to be something like that.

  • I just wanted to make one comment:

It seems like a lot of people don't know what a "feminist" is.
Dictionary.com: advocating social, political, legal, and economic rights for women equal to those of men.

Feminists aren't running around saying they hate men and women are better and are burning bras and blah blah blah. Feminists are fighting for the equality of women and men, and nothing more. If they ARE running around saying women are better etc, then that's not feminism, that's elitism.

So, I would be willing to bet most of us are feminists (yes, even you, fellas!), unless you still think men are superior :P Feminism has been spun into such a negative word when all it really means is the fight to bring equality to both women and men.

My moment is up... best of luck figuring things out. I just wanted to post that, though, because I see so many people say "Oh I am DEFINITELY not a feminist!" and then you say back "Well do you believe in equal rights?" "Of course!" ...then you are a feminist. ;) It's not negative! Feminism is a good thing!

This isn't meant to be rude or condescending, just informative. :) I promise. I've had a class on feminism through literature and learned a lot about it; I used to think it was just "women are superior!" too. But, really, it's not!

I know this really plucks something out of here that doesn't have a lot to do with the OP... but it just kind of bothers me how people are so negative towards feminism when it really is such a positive thing. So if someone calls you a feminist... say thank you!

    @Nutmeg: *hugs* :)

  • It makes me sad when women announce that they aren't feminists. So you think you deserve to be paid less than a man? Or that you don't have a right to bodily autonomy? That's sad!

Patriarchy hurts everybody. Being a feminist doesn't mean you're anti-male. Acknowledging that rape culture is a thing (and that it sucks) isn't anti-male.

Also, it doesn't even matter that this incident in question involved a rape threat "joke." If he'd said "IMMA MURDER ALL OF YOU" it would still be inappropriate, intimidating behavior.

So true -- dictionary definitions don't give the meanings of words. A much higher authority is the unsupported opinion of any anonymous person who's typing in chat.

  • I believe in equal rights across the board and I don't need to be a feminist to believe so. I believe in equal rights to color, sexuality, religion, etc.  Threatening and harassing comments made to anyone is just that.... threatening and harassing. You can say your "just role-playing" but a jerk is a jerk is a jerk.. there is no excuse to be one and no excuse to try and  remove yourself from your jerky behavior. What I understand what went on here was just straight out being a nasty bully.. no role-playing about it. Sadly this person says they are a good person.. sure didn't show it did they?

  • I don't care for that kind of talk either.  An acquaintance of mine, years ago, who I enjoyed chatting with daily finally (I mean FINALLY!) said to me, "Have you been raped yet?"  I never spoke to him again and, frankly, I was creeped out.  I did not really know what to do.  I was so absolutely shocked by the question and his seeming attitude that "sex" was equivalent to "rape".  He apparently saw no difference.  It scared me to think that some people actually think that way.  So, NO, I do not take the casual use of the word "Rape" lightly and neither should anyone else.
Posted 12 months ago by Brib Annie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Well... it's not really bursting my bubble, but thanks for the feedback, and I apologize for that mistake :) Yes, feminism is the belief in equal rights for women, not just general equal rights. I actually only posted that once, because I had been repeating "women's rights" throughout my post and was shortening... all other times, however, I had pointed out that it's "equality of women and men." Anyway, is it false that feminism is the belief in equal rights for women?

This IS what feminism is. This has always been what feminism is. It HAS been wrongly defined for a long time, and people are starting to learn now the truth of what feminism is. Do I agree with Vocable that many times popular opinion (that is what I am assuming your "higher authority" means, but if I am incorrect please correct me) can change the meaning of a word? Sure do. But, we're trying to change it back (and we HAVE been changing it back, slowly), because... like I said, this is what feminism IS. I actually really would recommend anyone who's interested in it to look up some of the history of feminism... from what I remember, there was maybe like one bra burning, and the media spun it to "WOMEN BURNING BRAS LEFT AND RIGHT".  It's really interesting!

I apologize Nutmeg for derailing your thread and if you wish me to stop posting, I will. I really do support you and I think that post about rape jokes is something everyone should read, yes.  Also I welcome anyone who thinks I'm wrong (or right lol) to talk with me about it! If you see me around send me a message!

  • I hear what your saying Zoei but I was around during the bra burning incident among other feminist movements. It was very extreme trust me. In fact so extreme that is was embarrassing to be a woman back then and it was a put down to be called a feminist. I still carry that feeling with me due to what was going on then. Men started treating women badly because of the feminism movement then. Not all but many. Men started telling us if we want equal rights then we should start paying for dinner on a date, and we should open our own doors etc.

I am sorry I have always been a lady, conduct myself as a lady, and I like being treated like a lady.  I like a man to be a gentleman. My preference? Sure is. I sadly think too many girls out there have forgotten how to conduct themselves like a lady now days and many guys have forgotten how to be a gentleman. But maybe that is my age talking.

  • @Laerwen
I can block, report, and move on easily.
Whether it affects me or not, it's about not letting anyone get to you, no matter the subject.

I understand what happened, happened, and it sucks, I get it.
But what are you really going to do about it?
Be sad for years until you eventually consume yourself with grief that you can't function?
Eventually end yourself because of a misfortune in your life?
Go on some psycho spree murdering everyone around you because you got dealt a shitty hand?

Or are you going to move on?
Come to terms with what happened, and stop making people feel like shit over what happened?
Stop throwing the whole, "Oh it doesn't bother you, you're obviously not considerate of other people.".
I can be considerate, but dragging stuff out, and throwing pity parties is a bit unneeded.
I understand what happened, but throwing it in other's face, isn't going to have anyone supporting you soon.

tl:dr Stop throwing pity parties, and come to terms with what happened. And stop assuming that because it doesn't affect someone, that they don't care and/or don't believe it affects them.

  • @Casombra - Young women today haven't forgotten how to be Ladies.  Sadly they were never taught.  I was a teen in the 60s, left home in 1969.  My generation was at the end of the idea of being a "Lady" or "Gentleman" (I think).  There have been plenty of Ladies since, of course, (and Gentlemen) but it seems to me that there have been one or two generations since mine that have no concept of "Lady" and "Gentleman".  BTW, these terms do not mean that one is stodgy, prudish or any other kind of Victorian ideal.  To be a Lady or a Gentleman, to me, means that one is polite, kind and considerate of others.  Why should these concepts and manners ever be outdated?
Posted 12 months ago by Brib Annie Subscriber! | Permalink

  • It's a little of both, the problem was resolved and then was brought up in a huge thread...to what gain? One could easily misconstrue this as an attempt to receive pity from others on the forum...thus making it a pity party.

  • I see completely what you mean, Casombra, and perhaps it is age (I keep forgetting that most Glitchen are older than I am! this is so different from other communities I'm on, haha! (also, this isn't meant to call you old :) hehe just pointing out the difference)). I am 19 and I have always been surrounded by the equality stuff. I think women should pay for dinner (and to answer your probable thought, no I have not done this, simply because I'm kinda lame and have never been on a date lmao... I have paid for myself with friends though!), should open our own doors, etc. I don't care about being treated "like a lady", I care about being treated with human respect. I'm not sure if I act like a lady (mostly because I guess I don't really know how to xD), but I sure know I treat others with respect.

I can see from your point of view how being called a feminist can be an insult. Do you see, though, that it was the EXTREMES that stood out to you most? I am sure there were many other movements (in fem.) that weren't as extreme that would have had a positive image for the feminism movement, that perhaps weren't broadcasted or talked about simply because they weren't extreme. And that's really why I want to have more people understand what feminism really is, because I'd be willing to bet that most people weren't doing the extremes, and once they learn more about it then they'll better understand it. There are a lot of examples I could pull up (of the extremes showing more than the majority), but I don't want to start a big debate and completely derail Nutmeg's thread D:

I think this sort of ties back to Nutmeg's thread though. Everyone has a side XD And I totally agree with that. If you think I'm totally wrong, then that's fine (just as long as you respect me for having a different opinion :)). I think that's the word of the day. Respect. And by the sounds of it, Nutmeg dealt with someone who had none. (ha! I found a way to tie it back in!)

Thanks for the post Casombra, really :) Like I said... I didn't live through the movement myself, so it's nice to have that perspective.

"One could easily misconstrue this as an attempt to receive pity from others on the forum...thus making it a pity party."

Jordy, you've made it painfully obvious that you don't care much for me and have no interest (except with starting shit) in this subject- so please stop coming back and saying things like this. It's not a pity party. As you can see, he made two separate forum posts in which he called me out by name, and claimed a lot of things that were not true. Aside from that, for the last 22 or so hours, he's been spamming his status with different mistruths. I value the community here, and did NOT want my name strewn about like that. I was setting the record straight. If you don't like my posts, or want to think I'm throwing a "pity party", don't read them.

  • Flowerry Pott while I completely see your point and agree that both sides need to be given the same message, I just wanted to point out that Volkov DID post on said person's profile about it, even if briefly (maybe they posted elsewhere too, I'm not sure): Clicky

But again, I agree that if both sides hadn't been posted the same message, that wouldn't have been right :)
(also, definitely not saying that I agree with the message :P mostly because I haven't looked entirely into it)

  • I have nothing against you at all. In fact what you quoted there was me mearly proving a point someone else made. Regardless of what he posted you maybe should of just been the bigger person and let it go. You are the one dragging your own name through the dirt by continuing the dialog.

I'm not taking a side here...mearly playing devils advocate

  • Jordy please quit victimizing the victim here.. I mean really. Enough is enough. You don't like what NutMeg is saying then move along instead of "mearly playing devils advocate".

  • Thank you for standing up Nutmeg.  I was a bedside RN for 32 years.  I've taken care of people who have been raped (men and women).  There is absolutely NOTHING funny about it!
