Fox brushing Tips - possible spoiler alert

There seems to be a little confusion when people first enter into a preserve as what to expect so I thought it would be good have a thread listing peoples experiences.

My experiences: The only way to brush a fox seems to be to drag the brush out of your inventory and "drop" it onto a fox as they stand still by the bait (if you're really lucky you may get one as they scamper by) there is no keyboard shortcut like other actions. You can't accidentally drop you brush or trade it so don't worry about that. Try not to stand to close to other glitches as the trade option will activate and fail (see above) instead of brushing. It is good to go in groups however as one bait ignited will rain down plenty of bait for all to use. Missing causes you too loose energy and holding the brush for too long will cause it to auto brush and most likely miss.

  • What do you know about a text bubble appearing behind a bush? Is that the fox? He also said, "Too slow"

  • Zooming out a little seems to help.

  • My guess would be that you accidentally missed with the brush.

  • Oh, I was just feeding a sloth, and then saw a text bubble from no where.

  • The clearest "Shots" I've gotten is when the fox stops in the clearing between bushes.  And it's best if no glitchen are standing in those clearings.  I've gotten 1000 (yes, 3 zeros) fiber in next to no time that way

  • 999 fibre (the max amount per stack) is very easy to get in just a few minutes - around 20-40 fibre per successful brushing.

ME AND MY FOX. They are fast......too fast

  • The magic for me is to stand still, in between two clear spots, and let the fox run back and forth between them. No bait required, and I mean 8 full pockets of fiber magic. It seems to be fine for multiple people to stand in the same place, so if you see me standing in a preserve, feel free to join me and fill your fox pockets.

  • the bait is cheap. grab some friends, and spread it around. maybe 2 foxes will come :)

  • The fox comes out if there is bait.  If you can brush him, (or her,  I suppose we don't really know) then he runs away without taking the bait.  He might run past the bait or run in the other direction, but you've effectively 'won' that encounter.  If you 'miss' and he gets the bait, he's gone unless there's another bait somewhere nearby.   I believe the fox does not just 'run around' - there is bait somewhere nearby that you're not seeing.      The trick, or goal, is to continually get the fox before the fox gets the bait.  If you can, you can keep the fox in your vicinity for quite some time.   Having two brushes seems to help (thanks V.) as you can ready one while the other is playing it's animation.

  • The ranger says there's no point in putting out bait unless you see a fox. But my experience so far indicates that baiting tends to make them show up.

  • The two brush method is extremely effective!

  • Pascale - I think you misunderstood.  The ranger meant that there is no point igniting bait if the the fox was already around (since he is already there, and you don't need to bait him again).  A lot of people are getting confused by this, they should probably change the wording.

  • That makes sense Coconut. The tip is worded ambiguously!

  • Earlier today, I ignited only one bait and was able to pluck more than 3000 fibers off the fox.  I was very quick and got him immediately after each time my brush regenerated.  What would happen is the fox would leave for a few seconds (giving me a chance to repair my brush) and then reappear to try get the bait that it never finished getting in the first place.  I was able to keep going for so long that the only reason i stopped was because I had used up all my energy (I used a total of 2200).

I've just tried again though and can't seem to do this again!  I've ignited 3 baits at separate times but the fox manages to get all baits in its first attempt.  So when the fox leaves, it doesn't come back.

If I had only known how much of a run I was on.. I would eaten something!  Anyone else had a similar experience?

  • There is a point igniting bait when there's already a fox, though. It makes him stand still a second to eat the bait.

  • There is also an exploit when turning fiber into thread:
    ,
    * If you have already died from low energy ("natural" death)
    * And do a large batch of spinning (eg 700 fiber, which should use 100 energy [1 energy per thread])
    * But have less energy than would be required for the batch;
    * The full batch will complete ANYWAY, leaving you at 0 energy -- essentially completing the rest of the batch for free

PS Coconut I got roughly 5500 fiber in 20 minutes or so, using two brushes. The fox would bounce from left to right like a rabid squirrel.
PPS The fox come out farthest away from the ranger, so light bait by the ranger, so he has to make a longer run to snag the bait.

  • My experience in Banyan Park is that there's always bait out near the ranger, so I haven't had to use any there. Maybe the different kinds of habitats work differently.

  • I've been playing around with brushing the fox in Eyeballery/ camera mode combined with being all the way zoomed out. You can still pet the fox even if he is no where near you just as long as you can see him and "drop" the brush on him. Not sure if this is intentional though, but it works great combined with the 2 brush method.

As far as bait goes, I like to ignite as close to the ranger as I am allowed. This seems to keep the fox on the screen for the longest possible time as the fox has to travel the furthest to get to it. If you get lucky the bait may go to a place where the fox cannot get to it and you no longer need to bait.

  • I don't get what r u guys gonna use all the fiber for anyway. all u can make is general fabric.

  • I'll definitely try two brushes & see how that helps.

So far I've found igniting near the entrance (as close as you can to the ranger) helps - that way it seems like some of the bait falls outside of the sign & the fox can't just snaffle it all up right away, & also hiding behind trees seems to have given me better results than standing in the bushes.  I've only tried it a few times though, so I'm definitely not a fox brushing pro yet.  It seems like it'd be smart to go along to a reserve with a few friends/contacts - that way you can take it in turns to ignite bait, & you all reap the benefits.

Misty, I'm assuming we'll need some fiber for furniture making.  After all, sofas, beds & some other items have fabric as part of them, not to mention rugs, so fabric may be part of the "ingredients" for some furniture items.
