Why a Reset of Glitch is a Bad Idea..

Being back in Beta is fine so long as it's temporary. But a reset?!?  No!

From me it's not about lossing everything in a reset - as I went through that in Beta when it was fun...and we all know it was Beta.

For me it's about saying we've launched and then saying maybe we'll have to reset again, after the launch!

Seems to me it's a bad business decision, and if the tech/coding/servers/etc. require it, then something went very wrong with the decision to launch in the first place. If a reset happens, then my conclusino is the tech dept. doesn't have it together, as once you launch, it a done deal!

As TS knows, they're running a business and if you made the tech and business decision that Glitch was ready for prime time, then so be it...TS you stake your good name on your past decisions and let the chips fall, or soar as they may.

They market can be very unforgiving and I would hate to see a reset hurt Glitch's reputation and continued growth.

  • My point wasn't that they would offer that option, my point was which would you prefer?

In the HIGHLY UNLIKELY event that a reset needs to happen, that would be why. People would need to be reset in order to continue to participate in the game as a whole.

The only way to "avoid a reset" in that scenario would be to splinter off groups of players in unsustainable ways (which is utterly impractical for pretty much every reason you can think of).

You're presenting the idea of a reset like a malicious punishment from the devs for no reason EXCEPT to piss everyone off. That's not the case at all. IF there were a reset, it would be (for reasons illustrated above) to ensure the game can continue as an MMO and evolve for all players.

TL;DR: It is not difficult to say that a reset would be needed. A reset would ONLY happen IF it were needed. A reset would never happen if it weren't necessary. I don't understand why this is confusing. :(

  • Implying a game can't evolve without resetting everyone.
Obviously WoW is thriving, or even LoL.
And I don't remember them ever resetting.

Nor did I try to present it as a "malicious punishment". I was presenting my opinion, you took it how you wanted.

I honestly just wanted you to somehow prove it would be needed, which isn't confusing at all.

TL:DR ITT: opinions and senseless arguments/debates

  • A game can evolve without resetting everyone. I'm not implying anything else.

    1) TS has repeatedly stated that they will do everything they can to make the changes and updates to the game WITHOUT a reset.

    2) In the unlikely event of a reset, it would only be done out of necessity.

Necessity being that the old infrastructure of existing players couldn't be reconciled with the new framework of the game. They are going to do everything they can to avoid a reset, but there may be some yet unforeseeable reason why that isn't possible.

This isn't my opinion, this is what has been repeatedly stated by TS staff in the past day.

  • Volkov, WoW is a different animal. They have often broken things in WoW, but things have never been broken so much that they would HAVE to reset people. But then, they often don't change core mechanics when they patch and update. Nor have they ever gone BACK into beta (or gamma), as far as I know.

That said, if TS is changing some core mechanics of the game, reset MAY become inevitable for reasons Xev stated above. She never said that they HAVE to reset in order for the game to evolve. Just that they MAY have to. In the future. Once they find out how all of the changes (to core game mechanics) affect the current accounts. However, they've stated several times now that they are attempting to avoid this and it is not likely to happen.

If you think a reset is shitty, you're right. But it's not malicious. If TS is put in the unfortunate situation of either resetting everyone or the game never getting to evolve again, I'm sorry, but it would be shittier to play a stale MMO that will never evolve again.

If the early WoW developers (current devs would never need to do this, so this is hypothetical only) went back into beta and changed core mechanics (like say, how experience works and the mechanics of pets and how healing magic is learned and works), some accounts may simply be incompatible with the new WoW 2.0 world when the game got back out of beta. Rather than resetting only the accounts that are affected by the changes (a move that would be really crappy) or all the accounts (a move that would be more fair, so slightly less crappy), they give players a choice to voluntarily reset their accounts OR continue to play WoW 1.0. Now this is WoW 1.0 without expansions. Ever. Just the core game. And nobody else can join because the developers are only supporting WoW 2.0, as it's a better version of the game. So there is just you and the other people who refused reset, clinging to a dying game version because they're so scared to start from 0. After a few weeks, the number of people playing on the 1.0 server dwindles until you find it difficult to form a party anymore. People have deserted 1.0 for 2.0 once they hear how great it is. And eventually, the servers just stop working. Because WoW 2.0 is more demanding more and more server space, thus forcing you to jump to 2.0 or stop playing altogether.

So you'd rather be stuck in glitch 1.0 because you think they'd actually reset us if they didn't have to. Have fun in your cave.

  • Thank you Quirk!

Volkov, I'm sorry, I'm kind of baffled by your demand for "proof." I'm not really sure why it's me who has to prove something, when it's your claims that don't make sense. But perhaps we're not understanding each other?

Still, I would be happy to list links to the various statements by TS staff that support my posts. Please let me know what else I can do to help explain this.

  • I was just trying to point out that it's pretty much lose-lose, if you just reset a few, or all.

@Xev. I asked your side of the whole reset thing, as I saw nothing but "growth".
If anything, you two didn't understand what I was trying to get at.
Because either way, someone is getting shafted.
Probably month's of work gone just because of a somewhat bad programming move.

    @Quirk.
The whole WoW comparison you made is kind of flawed.
If we're back in Beta, why isn't everything reset now?

And Xev, why are you just now willing to link to the TS statements? Why not have done that earlier and saved the whole confusion?
Posted 13 months ago by Volkov Subscriber! | Permalink
  • No. The WoW comparison isn't flawed. At least not for the reasons you stated. Since you didn't state any. Your understanding of the WoW comparison may be flawed. But there's no way for me to figure that out because you're not giving support for any of your statements.

And why, exactly, would we have to be reset to be in beta? We're in beta right now. I think you've misunderstood all of the posts made by TS regarding the unlaunching, as well. I'm not going to link to them because the main one is pinned at the top of the general forum, which means you've probably already read it.

I think I'm done interacting with you. This isn't even a debate. You just don't get it.
Posted 13 months ago by Quirk Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Since we weren't in Beta until the recent update, and now we're back.
So why aren't we reset now?

Your statement is flawed, given this:
Glitch was released, let's call it 2.0.
Now we're going back to 1.0, call that Beta.
By your statement, a reset would be needed.
So why isn't it reset now?

But hey, if you wanna' give up, go ahead. Coulda' swore that was simple logic.

Also, if I don't "get it", help me?

    TL:DR: I lol'd.

  • I didn't link the posts, because I thought, by your participation in this thread, that you were aware of what had already been said.

Likewise, given that I've paraphrased and quoted the TS staff (and attributed those quotes), I didn't realize you needed more "proof" than that.

I'm not quite clear what else you need, but perhaps reading through this thread would be useful. I can go through and link to each and every staff post on the subject, but I'm starting to think that's a waste of my time. Why don't you go through that thread and find all the staff posts and read them. For more general questions about beta, please check out the FAQ.

If you have additional questions after that, I'm sure many people will be happy to help explain further.

  • Volkov - Xev has graciously made all of the other points I was tempted to make, but let's go back to your reply here for a second...

That logic doesn't make any sense at all. We may be back in beta, but that has nothing to do with rolling back code and reverting to previous versions or anything having to do with resets. TS didn't roll anything back. In fact, they did the exact opposite of that, they introduced new skills, items, and street projects.

I don't expect this to lead to any valuable discourse or anything, but dang if that wasn't stuck in my craw.
Posted 13 months ago by Knitomaton Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yep, exactly. Beta is just a designation. The only real tangible difference to the game now being in beta is that it is no longer open to the public. So, without an invite, new players can't join and start playing.

Being in beta doesn't mean we'll need a reset. It also doesn't mean that we need a reset to be considered beta.

We had been in beta previously (before the game launched a few months ago), and before the launch, everyone was reset as part of that planned release.

The two are not related, but I can see how it could be confusing. To say we are in beta again simply means the game is not public anymore.

  • Glitch 1.0 would be first launch. Just saying. Prior to launch, it was more .1 and .5 and...well you get the picture. 2.0 will be second launch. I don't know if TS is going by numbers for versions or if their version numbers coincide with mine, but the numbers aren't really important. Just think of them as different versions. And there are usually many differences between 1.0 and 2.0, while there aren't so many between, say, 1.0 and 1.1.

If you don't understand hypothetical situations and comparisons, I suggest you read up on the definitions to both. I recommend google for your definition search if you really are having problems. If you have issues understanding the definitions, I can try to help you, but may not be much help if this thread is any indication.

In this case, the comparison is between the possible but improbable glitch reset following the current testing period and a hypothetical reset in the early days of WoW (a game which you brought up as a comparison to Glitch, but which I, admittedly, have only played for about 10 hours total in my life), following a fictitious unlaunching, additional test period, and relaunch. Since Blizzard never (to my knowledge) did such a thing with WoW (even though I could argue that several of their mechanics could use an overhaul), your original comparison was flawed. I just went with your groundwork and built on it. Since there is no comparable situation in WoW history, I had to go into the hypothetical. Apologies if that made my post difficult to follow.

However, I never said a reset would be needed. I said that IF it was needed for the reasons Xev mentioned above, it would not be unwarranted. Your original argument was that a reset would be shitty and there would be no legitimate reason for TS to trigger one. And then you asked for a possible reason they might trigger one other than just wanting to be shitty, not believing that such a legitimate reason might exist in the future. Remember? Do you need me to link to your original comment for you?

  • I remember how kind and care-free all Glitchen were before the last reset, when we knew we would lose everything the next day. Perhaps we should all act every day like tomorrow could be another reset.

If you see me in the game say "hi" and if there's something I can give you or do for you then I will.

Tomorrow you could lose everything. Show your kindness.

  • Freaking out is when a person gets so involved that they feel the need to post hundreds of lines to make their point, using caps, derogatory insinuations, etc., while  having a concern and posting it is simply having a concern. Please, self-appointed commissars, stfu and let others share their joys, fears, etc without you telling them how to behave. We're not all bored level 60 players
Posted 13 months ago by Woochi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm not going to assume that I'm going to lose everything tomorrow and consequently give everything away. Not sure why that needs further explanation, but I do appreciate the sentiment.

@Woochi - I'm sorry if I offended you. Being the one who said "FREAK OUT," let me reassure you, it was not pointed at anyone in particular, but rather the general air of panic that is indeed infecting the community right now.

Every post I've made has been in an effort to assuage fear and explain what the reset would be and why it would happen IF it would happen. Since it's highly unlikely, let's not assume the worst. Glitch is a great game and a lot of fun to play. A roll back to beta in the anticipation of game-changing new features isn't a death knell, but a positive and proactive decision by the TS team.

I sincerely apologize if I came across as crass, condescending or dismissive, as your post indicates.

I will happily stfu and walk away from this thread. I think I've said everything I had hoped to.
Posted 13 months ago by Xev Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Xev, although I referenced the phrase "freaking out", my comment  was not pointed at you directly, but at the general tone in this thread and other threads where people basically get told to shut up and not speak on their own personal feelings/etc. People do need to share their concerns without being silenced by the fear that someone will shout them down for doing so or there is no "community".

I apologize for my tone and any personal implication to you - you should know by now I worship thy Radiant Splanked Holiness, Empress Xev :) - but I have a nasty headache and am in a bad mood and got a bit taken aback by the tone of the thread. I mean you no disrespect in saying what I said, but in essense and on general principles, I stand by it, even if I could have been more tactful and circumspect. Allaying fears is far different than berating, and there does seem to be a little too much of the latter sometimes, at least for my taste.

Fact is, the OP is right. a reset could negatively impact TS's growth. Fact is though, it may be necessary to provide new features or reiterate (ie coding, not re state)  the basic methods. both cannot be refuted by simple social argument. They are both logical possibilities.

sincerly, your supplicant and ever-loving servant, woochi.
Posted 13 months ago by Woochi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Totally understood - I just don't want it to seem like I was doing that either, that wasn't my intent. And I completely understand the people getting annoyed with the panic-y stuff, as well as the people going, "WTF, you want to take my HOUSE!? Reset me to zero!? WHAT!?"

You're absolutely right that there could be a negative impact, but I don't think it's fair to the community or to TS to take one word out of context and make a post about it. A reset is a remote possibility, not a certainty. It's completely fair to not want it to happen and to see it as a negative thing for the individual player who is already a part of this game.

However, what I intended to do is point out that a) it's a really remote risk. There are lots of other bad things that could also happen, and b) TS wouldn't arbitrarily reset anyone. A reset would only occur if it were absolutely necessary in order to move the game forward.

Meh, I'm repeating myself. I know you know :)

My point here is not to say that a reset is good for all of us and we should embrace it and love it. To the contrary, a reset, should it happen, would be crappy. It would be a huge inconvenience for a lot of people (if not a deal breaker altogether).

There's a LOT of misinformation going around though, and a thread like this makes it seem like a reset is a very probable outcome (it's not). My goal is to prevent panic and present what TS has said and analyze it calmly. I want people to get the context, not just the scary word that was part of a much larger post.
Posted 13 months ago by Xev Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Fair enough. I respect that Xev. :)

(yeah I would not "love" to see a reset, not by a long shot... but I can handle it if it has to be done)
Posted 13 months ago by Woochi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Fwiw, long posts are only needed when someone demands further explanation of an opinion and/or further explanation of an explanation.

My posts also weren't to tell anyone to stfu. Aside from thinking people are overreacting (which I've been known to do myself, see above thread), I'm not really concerned about whether or not someone voices their own opinions or concerns. And I'm not likely to mention it (or even post, as I don't make a habit of posting).

I only point this out because I've had some fairly long posts in here and I don't want anyone to think I'm trying to silence them. In fact, I tried to silence myself a few posts back. ;) That worked out well for me.

Btw, all caps for me tends to be for emphasis. Because I'm too lazy to properly format my posts with italics or bold.

I'd really like to know if anyone managed to defeat the magnet robots. Do we need to call The Doctor in?

FACT: No reset is currently being planned.
A reset will happen ONLY if there is no other way to keep Glitch functional.
Glitch has to remain functional in order for people to play the game at all.
If a reset occurs, some people will lose their ever-lovin' minds.

SPECULATION: Staff probably regrets even mentioning resetting as a remote, undesirable, unplanned, and very unlikely possibility.
