New Activity: Zootball (name can be changed to something more suitable)

Basically, this would be played like a combination of "hot potato," basketball, and rugby across the entire game-world.

Players join teams, possibly related to the locations where they rent.

Any player can create a Zootball at his or her team's Zoothoop, as long as his/her team has X or less Zootballs in play.  The goal is to get as many Zootballs into opponent's Zoothoops during a given day.  However, there are certain factors to the game itself:

1)  The Zootballs are unstable--after somewhere between five and fifteen minutes, a Zootball will explode, doing mood and energy damage.  However, while in your possession, you gain one point of mood per ten seconds.

2)  You can only carry one Zootball at a time--if you try to carry a second, *both* explode!

3)  A member from any opposition team can steal your Zootball by being in touch with you and interacting with you.  He or she gains some mood, you lose some.  (of course, that opponent will be even less likely to know how much time is left on a given Zootball...)

4)  You can *give* your Zootball to others on your own team, if they want to take it.

5)  If you tag an opposing Zoothoop with the ball, the Zootball poofs musically, and the player scores a point, TWO points if it's a stolen Zootball that was made at that hoop!  (Possible mood/energy/buff reward for this?)

The following Cool Things evolve from this model:

*  The player can get achievements and/or bonuses based on his/her Zootball score from the previous day.
*  The players' TEAMS can get achievements and bonuses from winning the prior day's game.
*  This gives players an additional reason to interact that DOESN'T focus on the various types of crafting and grinding skills... and, most importantly...
*  The advantage goes to the players who *really* know the streets, giving something of an edge to the explorers and lovers of platform games.
*  It's also a type of game that allows newbies to play alongside more-skilled people with minimal penalty.

Obviously, the basic idea may need to be refined, but it does give people a different way to interact and play with the basic Glitch world.

  • Wait, this is cool - but I don't know what you mean by "it does give people a different way to interact and play with the basic Glitch world." This would be a whole different kettle of fish from the basic Glitch world, and a lot of work for the devs. I mean, I do like the idea, but it wouldn't be player-created, which is why I was confused by you saying it would be the basic Glitch world. You might want to take a look at this :)

  • Cupcake:  What I meant by "a different way to interact" is that the sport as described relies on none of the various harvesting/crafting/construction skills which can become something of a grind.  If you look at most of the current "achievements," they, too, focus on repetitive actions.  Sure, it's great to be appreciated for harvesting 5003 eggs, but it'd be nice to be rewarded for clever strategy and cooperative team participation, too.

As for the issue of creating work, well, admittedly so;  adding a Zootball (or if you prefer (Stootball) to the avatar would add to the number of sprites that might be involved.  No idea is perfect.  However, through the Emotional Bear, they're already halfway to passing the ball already (upgrade the bear with a cap or a glove, perhaps?).  If the timer-countdowns for the balls are a problem, the number of balls can be minimized.  Maybe the giants' shrines could double as the hoops.  While I outlined a basic idea, it could certainly be tweaked and altered to suit the devs' coding requirements.

Nobody said it had to be coded right away, either.  :-)

  • Oh, I wasn't slating the idea because it would take work (I'm not slating it either way), I was commenting on the fact that you said "it does give people a different way to interact and play with the basic Glitch world." That's all. It's a great idea :)

  • While I thing coding the entire sport is probably a bit beyond at this point, it would be interesting to be able to craft "unique" objects with certain qualities. Obviously we are not talking about infinite customization with graphics (that would cause many problems), but the qualities Hazmat describes for the balls are interesting and if given a certain level of customization could lead to other sports.
Possible elements to objects (let's call them balls)
    - Lifespan (either a time or "use")
    - Effect (while in possession, for each use, at end of lifespan; effects would be a MINOR buff or the opposite of buff [i forget what we call that])
    - Assign a home "basket/box." When delivered the ball either disappears, resets, or moves to another location.

  • Lord Bacon-o:  I've heard of the opposite of buffs described as "negative buffs" or "n-buffs," or as "de-buffs" at various places.  However, when I hear "de-buff," it makes me think of "buff cancellation," which is a different concept entirely.  Mind you, having something that could remove either positive or negative buffs could be a cool idea, too, rather like the "Soft Echo Green Eyedrop" or whatever they called it on Kingdom of Loathing.

  • i think this idea could be simplified a bit, but it sounds rather fun.

the problematic thing about it is that would require a system for team creation that would also need to ensure an equal number of players on each side. otherwise the game would be more about recruitment proficiency than with "street knowledge".

but again, it sounds like a blast.

  • Two solutions come to mind:

First, a "team" might be required to have its own apartment complex fully sold in order to be in the competition.  As long as the complexes for Zootball (or, if you prefer, Stootball) are the same size, you then have your parity.

Alternately, one could also change the *scoring* values so that they're weighted for current team size, too.  Suppose instead of scoring one point for each goal, you received a score equal to the number of players on the opposing team.  Ideally, I'd like to see eleven teams, based on the giants, and the teams large enough for "world-size" play to be fun.

  • Oh man, I really love the idea.  Maybe we could sign up for teams and you have to wear a certain colour or something. 10 per team or something.
    +1 for Stootball

  • I dunno about "Stootball", but I like this idea!

No ETA, but we will eventually have most of the mechanics built in to support a game like this since team-based "Sports" are something that we've planned to support for a long time: this example right here was created over four months ago …

  • stoot that looks a-mayyy-zing.

similar to some ideas in this 4 months old topic - http://beta.glitch.com/forum/ideas/1896/ - only way better.

p.s. like the Angry Birds/Happy Pigs reference.

  • But - but - am I the only one who feels for the poor, hog-tied piggies?! Animal abuse!!
Posted 19 months ago by Cupcake Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I had the same thought Cupcake. Some kind of game-like scenario would be a lot of fun. Dodgeball, Capture the flag, etc. but I did wonder about the hog-tied piggies feelings on the subject. Didn't I post my thought somewhere about mini-games at the tower?

Similar to the Amazing Race quest, we could post for friends to play with us. We could do mini games like Tic-Tac-Toe, hangman, and other simple, board games. It sounds easy enough to me (like I know anything about coding)! When you found a partner you'd be transported to a room in the tower to play.  These two ideas btw are not mutually exclusive-we could have both!

  • Stootball would be a great ap for our smart phones - since it is not practical to play the game on the phone.. it would still give us the Glitch feeling :)
