Epitaphs for tombstones - contain cause of death

Tsu Dho Nimh had a great idea today:
Tombstones should have epitaphs that say what you were doing when you died ... "Here lies Tsu Dho Nimh, expired while squeezing cheeses."

  • "Here lies Volkov; Tinker'd his last tool.".

    Also, +1.

  • +1 I tend to read the tombstones out of respect but they are boring. This would make it more worthwhile. And I could bring young Glitch to show them the tombstones of those who ODed on no-no powder, as a warning to just say NO.

  • Sounds good. And if glitters can write their own epitaphs that would be even better!

"Here lies Brugu. He died of dysentry"

  • Here lies Crash, died while AFK.

I reckon we would see a LOT of these.

  • Here's a tombstone.

  • I still wish that you could DO something with tombstones.  Or at least get a "Morbid Curiosity" badge for reading them.  I'm a bit glad that they don't say how you died, because mine are usually too embarrassing (Hoe'd to Death).

  • I kind of wish we had a graveyard, for people to deliberately die in while earning Hell Visit Badges. :)

  • Here lies Twoodle - overfried her Lemburgers :(

  • Ohh yeah, but not necessarily what they were doing when they died... I'd love to see some Gloom-esque reasons.  Brugu has the right idea.  ^_^

"Here lies Miso.  He was pursued by poodles.  They may look silly, but they can strip the meat off a rhinoceros in less than a minute."
"Miso George. 2011-2011.  Drowned in a bog."

  • I like Miso's idea - rather then people write their own, randomly assigned funny ones.
If it was real causes how many would be AFKs? I'm think a high %.

  • Ha ha, I can't get anyone to play Gloom with me, but I was so charmed by the Gorey-like art that I got the game plus several expansion decks. +1

  • @Lorelei: LOL! That's the same reason I bought Gloom. (Gorey's 'Gashylcrumb Tinies' is on my bookshelf nearby.)

Back in the 80's, there was a computer game called Labyrinth (on a mainframe system called Plato), where your death would be marked by a tombstone and a message like "Killed by: Orc" ... so, another player got killed by a trapped lock, and his tombstone read "Killed by: Chest" - and that made it into our tabletop games as a running gag.

  • Eleventy-billion "yes"es! I read them initially, hoping for just this, then stopped...would definitely read them all if there were an element of humour (as with most things Glitchen) attached...

  • "Violets are blue, roses are red
I suppose you are wondering why I am dead
It was my time to pack up and go
For my nose-nose said yes-yes to too much no-no."

  • :: snort! :: rofl TK that's great.  XD

Lorelai if you were nearby we could play together! I got the starter pack and expansions too and can't find anyone who wants to play with me.  My daughter is really too young and gets freaked out by it, it takes too long for my son to stay interested, and my husband doesn't like card/board games.  ~O.o~

    ... ^_^
Edit~ Oh and +1 to the idea of gravestone-reading badges!!

  • Ooh, what if we could lay flowers at gravestones too? For an in-game effect, a gravestone with a flower laid upon it will last twice as long?

  • I think my Epitaph would be "Haha, made you look!" Seriously though, I love this idea.

  • We would totally be able to play a few hands of Gloom if you were closer IRL, Miso. :)

  • I lay flowers at graves all the time for personal amusement but they always end up stolen within a minute... :p

Maybe we could have it so only the previously-deceased could pick up flowers on their grave..?  ^-^
