Log-out characters after no movement for 15min

I feel like there is too many people camping things; camping key respawns, camping shiny stone respawns, etc, etc. It takes fun out of the game, at least for me.

I've played certain MMOs, not saying that Glitch is an MMO, that have logged me out of the game world if my character didn't move within a certain amount of time. It's fair to the other players who don't see 'dead characters' just littered all over the world.

I think it'd be a great addition to Glitch. I'm sure some people would find a way around it, but I think it'd catch some of the lazier campers, and that would be plenty of good for the game.

I hate coming back to Hell.

  • +1 Agree!  The afk'ers are not only creating lag by standing there, doing nothing, but even when they've gone to Hell, they're replaced by a tombstone.  Just log them out.  The servers (and other glitches) will thank you.

  • What is the point of players going AFK? I mean, their energy goes down overtime.

  • I personally do not like this Idea at all. I use glitch as a social game, I prefer to code and build upon the API rather then go around collecting items. I spend the majority of my time going through the market buying and selling. I can keep my av logged in while buying things from the browser not actively moving around in the game so that I do not get my mail spammed. This is the enjoyment in my glitch's life. I would not play if this is how it was. I am constantly AFK, I check back for messages and to check to see how things are doing.

    --Side thought--
I'd actually like to do some benchmarks on rendering costs of an avatar. I couldn't imagine that it would be that much at all.

  • There's AFK, and then there's stationary.  Sometimes I'm stationary for a while when I'm chatting, looking things up, crafting.  And watching for a spawn is, I think, a legitimate activity; if it's too necessary, that's a game-mechanics problem that should be tweaked, but I don't think the activity itself should be punished.

I think that going AFK is already sufficiently discouraged with the energy drain.  People mostly go AFK either when they don't understand the game mechanics or when some RL thing calls them away for longer than they expected -- and I think it's legit to leave the client up for a bit to maintain chat context.  The rock should maybe call attention to the energy/mood drain over time, and the fact that it stops when you leave the world.

If there were to be an autologout, I think it should be for afk, not for stationary, and after a fairly long time.

But, DeusAphor, the number of avatars present in a space does make a significant difference to how slow/laggy that space is.  I don't have numbers, but I've definitely observed it.  (I moved out of groddle heights because I couldn't stand how slow the crowds make walking through alpine vista on our slower computer.)  And AFK avatars count, they're animated even when they're sleeping.

  • Well, I am AFK for 15 minutes at a time without touching the game all day long every day. At work I have it open because I can sell things within two seconds, then go back to work. if I had to log in every time I did this, I wouldn't play it.

This idea kind of follows along the same lines and I'm all for this.
If the glitch goes AFK, if I understand this correctly.. They will morph into a sprite that is not animated and should significantly reduce the lag if it does hinder other people so badly.

    EDIT:

Snoot has even addressed this saying it will be implemented.

  • That's a very old thread, I think the current appearance of AFK players as sleeping is what has come of it.

  • AFK, especially in front of shrines/signs, 10 min. ghost 'em. 15 min. sign them out. Then those who are in their homes can go AFK with no penalty save the abhorrent (to me) drain. I'd much rather get booted than see the effects of the new energy drain.

  • +1.  this game is filled with WAY too many AFK people, constantly.

  • +1. It's kind of creepy actually when you walk into a street filled with AFK people. Feels like a ghost town of sorts.

  • For those of you who are logged in to use the Auction:  you are aware, aren't you, that you can start an auction with something in your inventory without being logged in, right?

You can't collect any of your purchases without logging in, but you can definitely start and cancel auctions and make purchases.

  • The main reason I would like to see AFKers logged out is because I think it's lousy how certain players just AFK mine or collect. Or at least that is what I think they are doing.

They sit next to a spawn point until something spawns and then they mine. Once the item is gone, they don't move.

Honestly, it reminds me of bots in MMOs that do the same thing. It isn't good for the game to have any kind of bot collecting items throughout the day.

I know my current lv14 character couldn't mine all day without dying due to lower energy, but I would guess at much higher levels, someone could perhaps pull it off, especially if they have a script to drink/eat an item after a certain amount of time.

Logging out AFKers would destroy the chances for bots, and would make it more fair for the other players that don't camp certain respawn points.

  • +1 to logging someone out if they're AFK for 10-15 minutes.

I have a bad habit/ability of falling asleep without any sort of warning.
I was asleep for a few hours earlier today, logged in at home. My Glitch actually did not go to Hell. Instead, she got lucky in catching the roll-over of a new day, and I woke up to her in a bad mood with 64 energy left.

I got lucky, but I think others would like to be logged out in this situation.

  • If this is implimented, please have the avatar come back to life in the same location it was when it was logged off. Lots of RL things can cause a player to be away from the game longer than 15 minutes or even an hour or two.
