What's the point of petting, feeding, watering, etc?

I rarely need mood boosts, especially comparable to energy boost, and especially considering meditation. My mood falls very slowly. It's as a result that actions like petting and watering don't really have a purpose for me, except in my own back yard and only very occasionally. Any ideas as to how the use could be improved?

Edit: Alright, it seems rather like consensus that they're useless actions, except in corner cases (quests, time-killing, achievements, etc.) How could they be improved?

  • Well, you oftentimes get a drink or musicblock or something, in addition to a mood boost.

  • It helps keep trees happy and (at higher skill levels) often delivers bonuses. But yeah. Does start to feel a bit like busy work (and honestly, at this point extra music boxes aren't gonna so me a ton of good).

  • They also have a few achievements with XP/Currant bonuses that help to motivate the care of trees. I think it's meant to be more of a "for the greater good" type of action, though.

  • The food/drink rewards for actions like this are tiny, especially once you've played the game for a week or two and you don't need a cheezy sammich (because really, that's not much of an energy boost). The mood boost is tiny, and the music blocks just pile up for me - I just donate all but 1 (so I can go around getting currants from crabs with the remaining one).

  • sell the music boxes to vendors.

it is a very good way to make currants.

there is no such thing as an "extra" music box in the same way that there is no such thing as an "extra" piece of pleasing amber.

  • By "donate" I meant to Giants - I like my faster skill learning and my emblems. Though, once the game is open full-time, and I have all my emblems again (which happens fairly quickly, as it's positive feedback), I'll start selling the music boxes (and gems).

Emblems aren't able to be auctioned any more.

  • Oops, damn English pronouns (by "them" I meant the music boxes, not the emblems) - corrected my post to be a little more clear.

  • As far as pet/water/massage/nibble go.. I usually don't bother anymore. I pet/watered my way through the badges then basically stopped because constantly fixing the watering can is annoying. Now the only time I pet/water is when the tree needs it before I can harvest. After a certain amount of AK, the pet/massage isn't required so I don't worry about it before nibbling/milking.

As for the feeding, I always feed a pig when I nibble it and it says it's out of meat. I have the spare meats to do it, whereas it really hurts a lower level player to have to feed the pigs.

  • To be honest, the only reason I do it is because I'm either feeling nice or I'm trying to complete that quest where you have to bring a tree back to its fullest, lol.

  • To be honest, although these actions are a bit useless, I like that they're there! They add to the quirkiness of the game, and make Ur seem more like a world, rather than just a series of quests.

  • I suppose my issue is that they're useful very sporadically; I find actions should either be useful fairly often (e.g. Harvesting actions) or not at all (e.g. Lick)

  • Don't you cook? I need the cherries for make other fruits, meat for meals, and butterfly milk to make butter and cheese. If I don't harvest them myself, I have to buy them.
Posted 18 months ago by MaryLiLamb Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @MaryLiLamb Yes, but petting (trees), watering, and feeding aren't necessary for harvesting. At later skill levels, petting animals and massaging butterflies are no longer necessary, too.

  • What's the point of having to jump and climb to move around Ur?

What's the point of anything in Glitch?

I'm not sure I understand why it is important to you that actions have to be useful "fairly often or not at all".  Why is in necessary to have such a clear dichotomy?
Posted 18 months ago by WindBorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @WindBorn My life revolves around keeping things in one of two categories: important or not. Things which I must keep in mind, but can't necessarily get out of the way, are very annoying to me. But I do see how this doesn't apply to everybody.

  • So, the question remains:

What's the point of anything that happens in Glitch?

How is anything that you do in Glitch not a "useless" action that is not important.

The only way to 'improve' something is to know what goal you're trying to reach.  If there is more than one goal, or if everyone gets to make up their own goal, then what do you use to measure the "uselessness" of an action?

  • Honestly, I think mood decay is too small, and energy decay is too large. Drinks are only used for buffs, since a few pets and waters is more than enough to keep your mood up. Not to mention the huge mood boost that you can get from an emblem.

  • Huh. Never really thought about them having a "point" per se. I'm with WindBorn on some of this. I guess I thought the point was just to have fun.... I admit I do those actions less now that I have many of the badges, but I do it sometimes just to make sure the trees stay healthy or grow up or to make the pigs happy. I still even massage butterflies now and then. I do kind of understand your mind-set about what is and is not important; I function that way a lot in real life, too. But in Glitch I like having the option of just doing things for fun...to see what the tree says or to make it happy.

I agree with Taral about mood vs. energy use though. Definitely off balance.

  • With higher level skills petting and watering give bonuses.
    Bonus = Good thing

Am like Rascalmom, when I go by a tree that need love and attention ~ I oblige.  Especially if the tree is small and needs it.  Sometimes I pick and area and pet, water, harvest from everything in sight.  It's fun ~ and I enjoy it.

  • RG, I guess I assumed you were questioning all the actions, not only the non-harvesting ones. I'm of the same mind as RM and Sayuri. Also, the menu defaults to pet and water before harvest so maybe we're just trained to do them first? Maybe as considerate people, we don't want to take without giving? I'm pretty sure that when I started, I thought that I could not harvest without petting and watering first.
Posted 18 months ago by MaryLiLamb Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @MaryLiLamb: When you start and have very few skills, that is nearly correct. You can TRY to harvest without petting and watering, but you don't always succeed. So early on, you really do need to do those actions...just thought you'd wanna know:)

  • Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about the "you tried to.....but you failed..." messages!

  • I love watering and petting everything even tho I haven't had to in a long time because I like the sounds the trees make and watching the piggies wiggling their butts when I do...but I do wish the piggies would squeal with delight when I pet them.
I even feed the piggies afterwards just because I can. lol
I like to watch the butterflies when they come to a screeching halt to turn around...cracks me up every time!
At my home, I even wish I could pet my critters even after I've already did it during that game day. But, then again, I'm also one of those that isn't bothered by the group of critters that surround me when I'm trying to garden...in fact, I think it's cute :D :D
It's one of the reasons I decided against getting a home in Alakol...I don't want to pen my critters. The other reason is coz I'd lose a tree space.

  • ...because it may not give the meters much of a mood boost but it gives me a RL one :)

  • Useful when you run out out of cherries and allspice and can't make the things you want, and noone has any on auction. besides, as in life, I prefer to make/do things myself as much as possible. There's a lot less nibbling and milking since I did remote herdkeeping. That really was a bonus.
To be honest you could say the same thing about mining and collecting barnacles, fireflies, jellisac etc. That leaves you with buying stuff on auction to use in projects to collect trophy pieces - any different? or else quests and playing with new skills, which eventually wears off the longer you play as you work through them all.
I guess it depends on the reasons you play and what you want from a game. This is not intended to be criticism btw, just a query really that if you think the petting and nibbling is redundant, then what parts of the game do you like?
best wishes with whichever aspect of the game you favour ;)
