Giant requests

Clare made a comment which intrigued me alpha.glitch.com/forum/gene.... Giants should not only accept items as donations; in fact, this should be a rather small way of how to gain favor. Giants should be able to give you quests, too, which rather than giving a high-money and high-experience reward, would give a high favor reward. This would also help to give the Giants more personality. Thoughts?

  • the favor system is a bit too materialistic, sure.

I'm not sure that merely apeing the rocklike quests is the answer though. it'd be just more of the same.

if the tone of the quests was very different, more story/parable like, or if the mechanics were suitably different from normal quests? then this could work, I think.

but just changing the reward from xp to favor isn't enough.

  • Giants sorta give quests already with emblems which open skills that have associated quests.

  • Well, and the general quests give you favor for the particular "patron giant" of the skill. I thought from the subject that you meant that a particular giant could request donation of some item (rotating at random by day or something) which you could donate for bonus favor.

  • @Trillho: That was partially what I was thinking with "quest". The quests could be things like find a particular rare item, or produce some difficult food, etc.

  • Reminds me of the original vendor quests- 'Go see my friend in Ix and bring me back some of those seeds he sells'. It was annoying but I think that's a good model for giant quests- if we acted as messengers between them?

  • That works too - no reason there can't be all different kinds of quests! I imagine that, as you say, "messenger" quests would get annoying quickly, so they'd probably be used sparingly. But certainly fun every now and again.

  • Well, I say annoying because they're not my favourites, you could say any action that requires effort in the game is annoying. Wrong word, perhaps. But they're a good part of adventure gameplay and I think this is a good place to use them :) .

  • Something like this will happen for sure, though more long the lines of helping to meet needs which arise for the Giants from time to time. It'd be a bit more like Projects than Quests (though not really the same as either of them :)

Edit: just noticed that the subject of this post was "Giant requests" — that pretty much sums it up. The term we used was "cravings" (though this would apply to things other than shrines — like animals and trees, etc. — as well).

  • Sounds good!

Hey, Cefeida, are you Canadian? I keep spelling favorite with an -ou- but my spellchecker gets mad at me for not being American.
