Glitch Children [Idea withdrawn]

This idea started with the post below, but has since evolved into something else. Please go there and share your thoughts.

How cool would it be if we could have tiny glitch doll neopets (sort of like children, but without the messy reproductive and genetic requirements)? They would be autonomous creatures (kind of like piggies / chickens / butterflies) that would be adorable. You could customize their appearance, dress them up, give them little child related tasks (that would generate img, etc.) teach them stuff.

And we could also have a related skill set - parenting (which would mean more predictable behavior in kids and better behaved children), as well as an offshoot of potion making - witchery.

Witchery would be given the ability to craft different potions and spells - advanced spells would involve an enchantment to lure children to that player's home to be used as an ingredient in powerful potions.

If a player can keep their child alive long enough to reach maturity / self-sufficiency, the child will explode in a burst of rainbows and iMG that the parent can then run around and pick up.

    Really. NO.

  • +1  I think it would be cool if we could somehow tie the matured children into our invite system so that we would have a special relationship to our invitees. It would be so awesome if all our invites had to be grown up from babies.

I think it is a beautiful idea and you are a beautiful person to have thought of it.

So many people are anti-life, anti-children. It is sad but don't let it get you down. Life finds a way. Bless you Xev.

  • Miss Bobbit, what you describe is completely different from what the OP suggests. Also, someone saying that they don't like this idea doesn't mean that they are "anti-life" or "anti-children" at all.

That said, I would much prefer what Xev suggests to what Miss Bobbit suggests, and even then, I don't care for the idea of baby/children glitchen. It doesn't seem to me like it would fit with the rest of the game.

  • Yea, this is uber creepy in an adult game.  A big PLEASE NO! from this pro-life person.

  • Come on you guys, I just want to steal your pretend children. There's nothing inherently anti-child or pro-child about that. It's just a game. Calm down, people.

Plus, the benefit to you is clearly tangible. You can appeal to everyone and the devs to "Please, just think of the children!" We all know that wins every argument.

I want to clarify, children wouldn't be eaten, per se. Not directly, anyway.

  • I think it would be awesome if we could capture them and use them as cooking ingredients! You know, like hogtying a pig. Set out some bait like a pie and wait, then YOINK! and into the awesome pot. Bonus points to TS if they make a :O face and a squealing noise when they're caught.

  • Oh, the old Xev is back with fabulous ideas.  I especially like enticing them to a bad place and then using them in potions.

  • I missed the part in the original post about using the children in potions! I don't like that idea at all. Wow. That's pretty creepy. We are not supposed to be able to hurt each other in this game. Or eat each other or use each other as raw material. Yuck! That is really disturbing.

But I do love the idea of having children in the game. I think it is sad that there is currently no way to have a family in Glitch.  I think it would be great to have parenting skills and kid clothes and kid furniture and toys etc. I think it would be great if we could pass our skills on to our children somehow too.

I also think that having children to raise would be a great way to deal with the problem that some players have amassed incredible wealth in the game and don't have much to spend it on. As a real world parent I can testify to how expensive it is to raise children. Having children in the game would give people something to spend a lot of money on.

  • Glitchlings are imagined fully formed.  I don't want to imagine reproduction or the various stressors children can bring, and I hope the giants don't either. I have many other games I can play if I want a family-type scenario.

  • I have decided (for my own sanity) that the original post is performance art and/or troll bait. It's really the only way I can make any sense of it. [OP has been edited to make it somewhat less creepy/bizarre. But still.]
Posted 7 months ago by Pascale Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Perhaps "children" is a loaded term, since technically no reproduction would be required. Mini-me's or clones might be more appropriate. Or perhaps robot dolls. Literal genetic relationships are not important, nor is the mechanics involved for Glitches to reproduce.

I'm thinking of this more as neopets than actual physical biological children of avatars. I will edit the OP to reflect this.

  • +1 Pascale..

    - 1 neopet / mini-me avatar for my avatar
Posted 7 months ago by Ooola Subscriber! | Permalink
  • So where did this whole plus / minus points thing start?

@Pascale Why does an idea you don't agree with have to be "performance art" or troll bait?

I'd love to have additional skill options, especially something called "witchery" - we have potion-making already, it seems like a natural evolution.

It seems whimsical and amusing, but perhaps instead of children, witchery should be its own topic and the possible potions / spells might include luring other glitchen into the woods for irreverent (and temporary) mischief.

For instance, a glitch might be turned into gingerbread, or resurrected from hell to become a zombie until the new day starts. Instead of normal behaviors and options, play as a zombie would have its own abilities and options (hassling the living, lurking, eating brains, etc).

See, this is what these threads could be about. Instead of plusses and minuses, an exchange of ideas to make an initial thought into something better.

That's why we're a community. That's why it's fun. We think about things and talk about them, but instead of shooting them down or insulting one another, we can expand and elaborate on a concept to make it into something really great - collectively. It's no one person, no one individual who is responsible and therefore at fault for any given idea. Instead, that idea becomes bigger than the initiator and turns into something that belongs to everyone.

  • This idea becoming Glitch reality would most likely see me leave the game.
No children, no substitute children, and no reworded posts to make children into mini-mes.
    Just, no.

Luring children to your home or, in a later post, luring Glitchen to the woods for mischief is not whimsical.
    It's predatory.

If you want to play a game that lets you raise children, may I suggest you try The Sims.
Posted 7 months ago by xombiekitty Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I suppose glitches being turned into gingerbread would be very predatory in the event that they were eaten, but I don't recommend that. It's a bit grisly.

If we go the predatory route though, baiting and catching / using other creatures in the game is equally (if not more) predatory. Summoning a glitch out of hell and turning them into a zombie seems like it could be a lot of fun. They are DEAD after all.

Come on, people, we're brainstorming! Let those creative juices flow!

  • + / - 1 as in a vote.. yea or nay

I don't feel the need to justify or explain my reasons for not liking an idea ad nauseum when a simple answer is enough. I participate at the level that I choose. If the idea excited me then I would be willing to elaborate or expand.

I'm sorry if you feel insulted. My vote was for an idea, not you as an individual. I think the community is fun because there are so many ways to participate and there are so many ways to play. This idea is not one I would choose or consider fun.

  • @ Ooola: I did not feel insulted by you and I do not believe you insulted me. The initial question directed to the thread in general was a mild question on where the practice originated.

If you know, I'm still curious.

I do not require explanation on why you like or do not like the idea, I was quite clear about your stance from your initial post.
Posted 7 months ago by Xev Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Xev, you posted an idea.
A couple people liked it, but most didn't.
That is what this forum is for.
A chance for people to suggest ideas, for others to comment, and for TS to implement or ignore at their discretion.

+ and - are very useful for quickly showing where the majority of people sit on an idea.

From Wikipedia: "A shorthand Internet meme signifying "I agree" or "yes" (often with a quoted post) on Internet forums, blogs and similar media"

The fact that this thread already has comments revolving around pro-choice/pro-life should have warning bells ringing that this is just not a good idea.

If you want to suggest witchery as a skill or summoning zombies, completely seperate to the suggestion of children/mini-mes, may I suggest that you create a new thread. Having them remain tied to this thread is not a good idea. It's not the evolution of a creative idea. It's having to read triggering things and/or personal/religious/politically charged concepts and try to ignore them in order to evaluate other less creepy ideas.

  • @xombiekitty - thanks for clarifying where the +/- thing came from. I was more curious as it pertained to Glitch, but since it's a global thing, it's seems likely it just naturally was adopted by people who had used it before and then by others in the community.

As for potentially triggering / religious issues, I didn't realize that there were religious statements being made (I thought the pro-life was in response to anti-life as it pertained to the initial topic - it didn't register that was specific to an abortion debate, which it seems is what you're saying). Since abortion wasn't at all what I was suggesting or thinking of, it didn't even register that that might be how people were taking it.

Regarding both, it simply did not occur to me that a game like Glitch and irreverent ideas (to me) would have such a strong negative backlash, or that the idea would be SO offensive that it couldn't become something different through community conversation.

My goal isn't to rub anything in anyone's face, which is what it seems is happening, but to encourage brainstorming and come up with an idea that is appealing and decidedly NOT triggering.

The fact that it is, and the fact that it is so deeply upsetting to you or anyone else is reason enough to start another thread and let this one peter out. My apologies to anyone who interpreted what I thought was an innocent idea as something darker and creepier. That wasn't the intent, but clearly that was the outcome. When the new thread is posted, I will link it here for reference.

    Thanks!

Edit: Here is the new thread. Thanks to everyone for their valuable input.

  • @Xev I preferred to look at your suggestion as performance art because you seem like an intelligent person of good will, and I preferred not to impute to you a frame of mind that couldn't understand that adding childlike creatures to the game for the primary purpose of turning them into potion ingredients or having them explode would not be fun or entertaining for most people.

The +/- terminology comes from many internet forum boards that have such buttons to moderate threads & posts. Participants "vote" contributions up or down, which votes redound to the credibility of the poster and sometimes the subsequent visibility of a post.

  • @Pascale: Regardless of your personal view of me and my character, it seems unproductive to share your theories on my motives unless your purpose in doing so is to try and insult or chastise me. Your response seems to be consistent with chastisement.

[edit: Pascale and I have discussed this exchange privately, and I have decided to update this post to reflect our agreed shared conclusion, which is below]

Pascale and I agree that ad hominem attacks have no place in this community. We are peers here, and that status demands that a baseline level of respect be afforded to everyone, even if we don't always agree with one another.

  • It *would* be sort of interesting to be able to create some sort of glitch character from an unholy melding of two other glitches.   Fully formed would be easier.  Perhaps they could be zombies that stalk the world with outstreched arms and if one caught you you would lose some small portion of imagination (braaaains.)    The rest of us could band together and kill them somehow.   Make it expensive.
Posted 7 months ago by WalruZ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • That would be AWESOME. But yeah, I think that could be a little too mad scientist for most people, which I get.

I think what this idea eventually became (in the new thread) is probably more palatable.

But, between you, me and everyone who reads this, I think the idea of genetic disasters becoming malicious entities that we must band together and destroy is absolutely hilarious. Oh man, Freud would have a field day with that.

  • Flaying them? Pssh. Glitch leather is inferior. All joking aside, if it's all the same, let's let this thread die. The idea I am very much behind is better discussed in a different thread.
