On the Subject of Blockmakers, Fuelmakers, Feeders, Collectors, and Thievery

This last test I started seriously participating in projects and I have to say one of the most annoying aspects of it was finding that the blockmaker or fuelmaker you had just bought (at no small expense) had grown legs and ran off.  I know that this was in response to the fact that previously once a piece of machinery was placed, that was it.  However, I think there can be a happy medium.

I propose that all machinery (including feeders and collectors) be "placeable" by anyone with the engineering skill.  Once placed, other players shouldn't be able to remove them (maybe they can ping the player to ask if it can be moved, similar to "knocking"?).

This would help keep the community machine rooms actually full off working machines, projects could have machinery and not have to worry about the machines disappearing, and people could put feeders and collectors in their own houses without worrying about visitors running off with them.

Does anyone have any further thoughts?  Am I the only one bothered when I lose a bunch of equipment or go into a public machine room and it is empty?

  • This is a good idea, like Gnomes, only those that placed them can pick them up.

  • I 'm fine with this in Community Machine rooms (though at that point they would just be permanent fixtures place by devs). My problem with only the "owner" being about to move them is that the world could quickly be filled with abandoned machines.
My general feeling is anything in a public space should be undoable by others... or the world is gonna get really cluttered real quick.
I wouldn't be against a temp lock on placement, say a game day. And, heck, make that option available at Engineering 2 or some such. But after that game day, others should be able to dismantle it.

  • We talked about this a little bit right near the end of this last test:

  • +1

I've had my blockmaker stolen twice, that's over 12,000 currants. >:(

  • i believe a good compromise solution would be to to make each blockmaker require a total of 6000 energy in total in order to be disassembled. if you are the initial assembler, it could only take 1000 or something.

this would remove the profit motive for "stealing" a blockmker, but if players just wanted to tidy up a bit they could communally muster the resources to move it without much difficulty.

  • tho i suppose there is always no-no powder.

okay .. a bit more awkward but to remove each piece of the blockmaker perhaps you have to send the purchase price of that piece to the player who placed it.

that way the player is compensated for the removal and can just buy more blockmaker pieces.

you also wouldn't have to contact inactive players to beg them to remove the blockmaker.

  • perhaps a more simple solution would be this:

No one but the owner of the machine can disassemble the machine for a period of one game week.  At the end of that week, they get a Glitch mail from the system saying that their block is freely available for anyone and then anyone can remove it.

  • It looks like the community machine rooms now have locked down machines as of this last test.

  • While finally getting locked down machines in the community room is a huge improvement - so yippie for that, hopefully the areas where projects are will get community rooms...right now, it's quite a haul from the current community rooms to where projects are happening, and that seems to be the current primary use of the bricks/blocks.  Or maybe we'll be able to soon use blocks and bricks for other things than just the projects (design/decorate/expand our houses...).

  • the problem with any *only owner* mechanism is that sometimes it is the owner that walks off. That might be because they temporarily disconnected, but it might be because they left for the day/test/life. So, though minor, the littering (and potential griefing) problem returns.

  • There was a similar thread like this a few days ago, actually.

The fact that this subject has been brought up numerous times means stolen blockmakers are a huge problem...
