Paint by Numbers level...

It starts out as just a white space with a set of simple platforms, and players with certain skills (painting, art appreciation?) could gradually uncover the actual art under the white space.

I was thinking of how players rush about from place to place all the time. It would be nice if there was a place where players could spend a lot of time collaboratively, and have a chance to chat more and such. Uncovering what is under the white space with other players would be a nice way to spend some chat time.

  • Awesome idea! All the participants could be rewarded upon completion depending on their level of involvement, then some menace of a monster could mess it all up and "paint" white over the new image. Thus, it's a never-ending cycle of collaborative paint-by-numbers. :D

  • brilliant brilliant brilliant!

we have red, green, blue and shiny elements available through alchemy ..

maybe those colours could be used to "paint" the level!

  • Needs a new skill for making pigments. elements as a color base sounds good.

  • maybe instead of platforms to stand on, several ladders, or moveable ladders.

  • like painters' ladders?

  • yep...or scaffolding to jump to.

  • ooh ooh, window washing! The level is one big grimy window, so instead of painting the level, you are washing the window to see the scene underneath.

  • window washing would give me that guilty conscience i would sometimes get when playing the sims: 'dang man i should really be washing my own dirty windows'

but collaborative paint-by numbers? love it :)

  • Ooo lovely. And can we have a collaborative musical level? One where users activate different items to make noises/tunes/beats that they can work on to make a song/tune?

    :)

  • I'll up the ante with street-building skills.

  • "And can we have a collaborative musical level?"

like the scene from "Big" with the dance on Piano in the toy store? that you could jump up and down on? plus other similar instruments?

    awesome idea.

  • All the "finished" pieces could become available on the site as wallpaper for your machine too. And users could submit pieces too.

It would be nice if you could get into them by jumping into a special hole, or teleporting or something.

  • +1 to the wallpaper idea! :D

  • @striatic YES! Exactly! Only they'd light up as you jumped too :D And maybe the animals would join in if they liked the music.

  • I wonder if "paint-by-numbers" could be made to work for clothes and houses. Generic blank shapes that could be filled in according to the whim of the player. Perhaps only usable in personal spaces within the world (I believe the devs should keep control of the unified design vision of the world).

A downside is "paint-by-numbers" in this sense would introduce the problem of people cutting&pasting copyrighted material. I'm an open-source person but I don't expect everyone to be.

  • I love this idea. Artist skills, particularly collaborative skills would be fantastic.
You have to be careful with the freedoms that you give. If you give the freedom to paint anything that you want then it is open to some serious abuse. On the other hand, forcing people to work together to a common goal is very productive. Great idea!

  • OR...a jigsaw puzzle? Not sure how the mechanics of arranging the pieces would work, but it's another way to gather and casually work on something together. The pieces could be scattered around the game and just randomly get into players' hands via any number of ways (trading with Rube, game show tix, etc). That would also bring new people to these chat areas, since they would have to bring their piece to the level/area to add it to the puzzle.

  • @TGDT---I wasn't meaning for players to actually be able to create something on the fly or upload images they got from elsewhere. I am talking about an animated painting skill in an area where the landscape is a giant blank paint by numbers canvas. The point is for players to gradually "paint" the image, but actually they are just uncovering an image put in place by the devs. The could also go there and mix/make paint too. So to paint you would pick up a palette or some paint jars and then click on an active area and paint it. Maybe the players could be "restoring" an old image instead.

The idea is one place to kill some time and have a chance to chat with other players, but uncovering the image underneath is something to work towards too.

  • Lalu, you were clear about your idea. You kind of inspired us to play with it.

  • ah, ok! Bit of toilet paper folding there by me I guess.

  • I keep meaning to comment on this, so: this is an awesome idea. Love it. Fits really well with one of the big projects which are starting now: letting players build new locations (or even new hubs) and upgrading them along different paths.

A very literal paint-by-numbers metaphor could work really well for upgrading locations.

  • yay!

and...letting players build new locations/hubs...something along the lines of user-created levels in Little Big Planet? That would be so great.

  • I love the unpainted paint-by-numbers canvas aesthetic, so this idea is really exciting. The level would be cool looking even when unpainted, but the potential for collective effort would be fantastic.

What if the painting faded out with time such that one or two people could never finish it, but a whole group could complete the canvas? Then if you actually got the whole thing painted it would stay that way for a game day and you could call people to come admire it. Then there could be a new different canvas the next day! Oo. I like this idea a lot.

Also liked the "if the animals like it maybe they'll play along" music idea above.
