Auction search error alert()s incredibly annoying

It seems like almost every time I search for something in auction the autocomplete will encounter an error and throw a modal alert(). Sometimes two or more will appear while I'm typing. This in itself is surprising - why should so many of my searches result in unexplainable errors?

What is worse is that the errors are handled very crudely - alert()s are very poor in terms of UX - they are modal, thus disrupting the user's workflow, and are therefore usually only used when there's a fatal error or when the application requires the user's immediate attention. Instead, I'm told to wait a second or so, which is about roughly the amount of time it takes for me to dismiss the alert! What is even more insulting is that seconds later my results appear, without any hint of error, every single time. If this is the case, why can you not just try again silently, and only report failure if the application really cannot continue?

  • I've never seen this.  It might help the devs to include information on your browser version?

  • +1

What happens to me is the autocomplete tends to work anyway, it just pops this error for the first few characters I type.  My browser sometimes asks if I want to suppress any more errors.

    I'm using Chrome.

  • I have the same problem (using chrome).
It doesn't really bother me, but it does look untidy and could use some attention.

  • I see this often, but differently.  The error message displays inline on the page to the right of the search box, usually after or at the same time as my search results appear below.  (I'm using Safari 5.0.5 on Mac OS 10.6.7.)  It's not a big deal, and in my case is often irrelevant as I already can see the search results;  I'm just posting this as an additional data point.

  • I get the same thing.  I use Firefox 7.0.1.

I wish there was a way to get it to stop...I've also seen it happen on one other website, but that's it.  It's a very irritating annoyance.

  • Happens to me very often. Since I use a keyboard religiously, I type too fast before load the auction page complete. When the error mini-window appear, I press Enter/Return to close mini-window quickly. Quite annoy but not major mess me up.

  • Same issues for me too, using chrome
Eg: Type in 'general' (error pops up), finish typing in 'vapour' (error pops up) ... Yet it then shows up the listings for what I've type in.
