Some thoughts on street herb gardens

Recently I've come across some status updates from friends complaining about how others blocked them for harvesting their street herb gardens. As someone who considers herbs near and dear to my heart (both in game and irl) I thought I'd offer my perspective, for what it's worth. ;)

I'm not in the habit of blocking folks willy-nilly, but I have blocked a few "pests" who cleared out my street herb gardens, leaving dirty plots behind. These were repeat offenders (minors, I'm guessing), and I made sure I was certain who the culprit was before I blocked them. A basic ethic in harvesting someone else's plot is to make sure to replant, that's common sense. Yet, some folks have been diligently replanting other player's plots, and have still been blocked, so apparently there's more going on here. So in order to get to the "root" of things (pun intended) we've got some...ahem...ground to cover, and first we might address the oft-debated topic of street-"ownership."

Many of us consider our streets to be "OUR" streets, even though technically speaking they are open to the public. The game dynamics support this sense of ownership: a street "owner" pays img to expand "their" street. They pay img to set a theme for their street, and to cultivate it with resources of their choosing. They are largely responsible for the upkeep of these resources, even though others may contribute from time to time in restoring depleted resources. Trees are locked to poisoning by other players, and certain items that are placed on an "owners" street such as icons or herdkeeping supplies cannot be removed or "stolen" by others. Not to mention that a street bears the name of its "owner."

Thus, even though these home streets are open to the public, they differ from public streets in the respects listed above. As such, there is a sense of personal proprietorship towards ones street, and many of us feel that our street is largely our personal property, though other players have the freedom to visit. In addition, a street "owner" has the option of blocking unwanted visitors, which further validates the sense of street ownership.

When a random visitor stops by "my" street, I'm quite happy to have them make use of the resources I've provided. At the same time, I feel no particular guilt in blocking folks who I feel are "abusing" my resources, such as by leaving dirty plots in my gardens. (Some of my friends have had their beloved animal pets stolen from their streets, and I would consider this another form of abuse.)

Why would I place an herb garden on my street if I didn't wish folks to partake of it freely? Good question. For me personally, it's a matter of aesthetics. My backyard is tailored to my sense of beauty, as is my street...the resources are placed in such a way that is in keeping with my sense of balance and harmony, regardless of their "use value." So yes, I have an herb garden on my street (which I might well keep hidden in my backyard) because it doesn't "fit in" with the scheme I've got going for the backyard. That's one reason. Secondly, I do wish to share resources with others, but at the same time, I appreciate a certain measure of respect.

I can empathize with street owners who consider their herb gardens to be their property, and who block accordingly. Even if someone replants your garden, they may not replant with the herbs you had initially planted. Even if they replant with the same herbs, it can throw off your rhythm if you come back in game in time to harvest your yellow crumb, only to find a bed of seeds. Some players leave notes requesting how other players treat their gardens, only to have the notes disregarded.

Resource routes have been created to direct people to folks who are happy to share their resources freely and abundantly. I'm a huge fan of these routes, and I applaud the participants wholeheartedly. At the same time, I'm not on a route for a reason. As much as I love the bonus img I receive from occasional visitors, along with the thrill that someone I haven't met before has made their way to my street, I also prefer some degree of privacy, and so I strive to maintain a balance that suits me. Again, for me personally, you are welcome to visit, so long as you are respectful of "my" space. Even if you throw off my gardening rhythm by your use of my gardens, I am largely forgiving, and indeed quite welcoming...up to a point.

But there's yet another element to street visiting to consider, one that goes beyond merely resource harvesting, and extends into the realm of gift-giving and random kindness.

My street is open to my friends, and to the occasional random passerby. If some random visitor wants to make use of my resources and in so doing passes on some bonus img to me, that's great! However, there is a generous sort of behavior that friends engage in between friends, that tends to differ from the random street visit. For example, if a friend visits my street, s/he may choose to harvest my herbs, but oftentimes that friend will do so for the sole purpose of giving me img, and will leave the harvested herbs with my butler as a gift for me. I do the same for them. The general idea when visiting a friend's street is to let the friend know you are thinking of them, and to leave them a gift. This gift takes the the form of img from resource harvesting, to be sure, but often a friendly token is left with the butler, along with a brief message. And of course if friends break eachother's resources, we are quick to do what we can to restore them. Again, we consider our visits to each other's streets as "gifts" we can give one another, and take joy in that.

Oftentimes, random visitors seem to be coming from a "taking" mentality, vs a giving one. So if you visit a random Glitch's street who is not on a resource route, nor on your friend's list, and harvest their garden strictly for the purpose of obtaining herbs, they may take offense and block you. If it's herbs you're after, and you don't wish to be blocked, my advice is to stick to the resource routes or community gardens. You may think you're doing someone a favor by giving them the img, but you may also be throwing off their gardening rhythm even if you replant. Obviously some folks don't appreciate that, and I can't say as I blame them.

Glitch is a wonderful community of kind-hearted, generous folks. We all have goals we are striving towards, but even so we are usually quick to lend a hand to someone who needs it. So maybe we can extend that generosity further, to those whose streets we visit. We can honor the personal nature of home streets, even if someone is on a resource route, and extend our appreciation in the form of gifts and caring for resources. We can broaden our view from "resources" located in databases to "players" and act accordingly, treating every person's street we visit as though they were our friend.

I'm reminded of a well-known parable where an angel (or faery, depending on your interpretation) was showing some dude around the afterlife. (Humor me if you've heard this one before, cuz not everyone has, and it's a good'un.:P) Anyways, he took him to a room where there was plenty of food available, but everyone was starving...their spoons were longer than their arms, and they couldn't feed themselves. "That's hell," said the angel/faery. He took him to another identical room, but here everyone was happy and well-fed. "They've learned to feed each other," said the angel/faery. "This is heaven."

  • If anyone want be removed from GlitchRemote... send me a glitch mail saying that. I will remove the tower and home street from all items/resources lists. of course if someone is playing and goes to that homestreet the information will show in the page. but no one will be able to find them through a list of items/prices.

  • I try to buy a few things from every tower I visit--I always find it encouraging when people have bought what I put out for sale, and I assumed others felt the same way.

What a sad and crazy world it is when the possibility of good intentions is ignored

  • I hate mining.  Its super boring to me.  So I bought metal rocks from towers.  Lots of metal rocks as cheap as I can find.  Block me, I dare you.  I don't want to give you my money anyway because obviously my OLD player money isn't as good as NEW player money.

PS my street is here for anyone who wants to use and abuse it.  And yes I have had my animals stolen, most likely by someone who ASSUMED I ransacked their street which I did not.  But I have many  NICE players here that replaced them for me.  So :P

  • Coheed your accusation is completely 100% FALSE.  I never plant purple unless there is a sign saying such.  You ASSUMED I did that and I DID NOT.  By assuming you have made an ass out of your self.  If I picked yellow crumb, then I replanted yellow crumb, especially since I want to be able to return to that street again.  Also, after this front yard herb garden nonsense started, I actually started leaving HALF what I harvested with botlers as a nice gesture to the street owner, but you had already blocked me at that point so sucks to be you.
On top of that you are accusing me of something in forums which is against TOS.  At no point did I name you anywhere.  That is libel and I should sue. (<~~Sarcastic in case you didn't know, wouldn't want you to assume anymore)
Next time you block someone, keep in mind the botler only tells you who as been there THAT GAME DAY.  I may have visited and your street was already wiped out, but you wouldn't know that would you?
And you know what, you admitting to stealing my animals only makes you look childish and immature.  If you thought I took advantage of your street, then the ADULT response would have been a note or an IM asking me why or not to return first.  Guess your mom didn't teach you 2 wrongs don't make a right?
Especially since you lashed out at the wrong person.

Cuz purple flowers are so AWESOME and everyone loves their gardens full of them and I LOVE hopping from street to street filled with purple flowers that I don't want to harvest.  Its really fun to play a game where most of my time is spent on the load screen.  Oh and to plant an ENTIRE street of purple flowers!  what a great way to waste my time!
    You sir...are an imbecile.

  • Let me start by saying, I'm 100% certain of the players I've blocked. I did not block them until I was positive. The scenario was: restock, check with the Botler, set out to return visits, visit 2 people then wind up breaking a resource, return home to get supplies from the tower, see the things I just restocked were empty, restock, check with Botler for recent visits and find one player, return to yard with broken resource, fix it, return a couple more visits, have to return to my tower again for some reason, find things empty, restock, check with Botler and the same player is the only visitor. Repeat a two more times. Repeat with two more players (one I'm certain is an alt) in fairly short order.
There's nothing 'wrong' with it, but for a number of reasons I find the scenario obnoxious and opt to block. I see no point in reaching out as the response would quite reasonably be 'change your price'. Reasonable or not, I don't want to participate in their game style anymore.

@ WeavingTheWeb - I'm aware meat makes a functional donation. I generally have no objection to people making purchases for whatever reason, some situations / player styles bug me. If I needed the cash I'd have simply sold the items to a vendor myself and made more. I highly doubt the players were offended, just disappointed the resource had become unavailable and moved on to the next one.

@ Hawkwell - I understand your scenario and can assure you I'm quite certain as to how and why the visits were made. I don't actually like the prices I'm currently charging, they're set much higher than I want... but if I set them any lower I start to become annoyed with the whole process.

Some people may remember, (oh noes, here's the 'back in the day moment'... I can feel the collective eye-roll) back when it was just the Auctions, I had a big problem with the 'auto-buy without being in' ability of certain apps. The function made it impossible to sell at low prices because the second you did, a program rather than a player would identify it and make the purchase. When the player finally logged in, it all went to vendors or shrines. It was a perfectly legitimate style of play, but not one I wanted to participate in. We did not have the block function, so I either had to sell at exactly vendor prices or not sell via the auctions. Today we have towers and blocking options.

@ Pascale - I totally agree with you, much of the economic angst would disappear if / when certain refined controls are implemented. What they'll be is probably as you've mentioned, batch settings and counts. I'd also like to see a 'charge double price', 'charge half price' and 'do not sell to / only sell to' functionality. It's an entire thread itself, but can apply to the 'gardening issues' topic. If players were allowed to allow / block just certain actions in relation to the gardens (i.e. be able to set 'plant' actions to only accept certain seeds, turn off the harvest capabilities for a crop you need /  don't want harvested), the detailed control would enhance the happiness factor. Does it add complexity? Certainly. It could also prevent the decorative annoyances people have, as well as generate opportunity for those who want to reach out (by blocking them only from harvest while you wait on a response / chance to talk to them). However, it is accepted the Home Street resources are public and presents the challenge a player might lock their resources / gardens effectively making them private (or semi-private or only available to group members / friends).

@UXRoot - It's a kind offer you make to those who wish to opt out of certain apps. I personally have learned to accept: if it's happening in one app it'll be programmed into another. I actually don't mind Glitch Remote and will give new players the link despite not leveraging it much myself. It can be a useful resource, even if I don't like how a small percentage of players use it.

Overall, my point remains the same. Different players have different preference and it takes all types to maintain a dynamic game environment. Not everyone is going to get along for whatever reasons and finding yourself blocked is nothing to get worked up over. Glitch is a beautiful game in part because players have a degree of control over their game environment.

It's worth noting the controls have been refined over time, often after a divide like this in the player community - provided we can keep the discussion productive. We got shared mining, poison limits on home streets, timed lockouts in harvesting a garden, and refined key holder privileges.

  • I don't believe that i ever visit your street. But block me please. You rules are so unglitchian and i don't like in the future to break it by accident.
Posted 4 months ago by Minoas Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Could we all refrain from labeling permissible player choices "glitchlike" or "unglitchy" or anything like that? There are myriad player styles, and all which is not forbidden is allowed.

You don't have to like it, but you do have to accept that game play varies tremendously among players. While personally I'd like to think that kindness, civility, and generosity are the "glitchiest" qualities of all, I don't think it does much good to divide players into labeled categories. Play and let play.

There is absolutely NO POINT in getting worked up over a player's choice to block you or someone else. It is entirely up to each individual to choose with whom they wish to interact. Ur is enormous and abundant with resources. How nice it is to wind up only interacting with people who want to interact you, am I right!? Our socializing is entirely voluntary; this is a good thing.

  • Well...here goes....Firstly resources added to the front yard do cost img to put in....valid point, however, over the course of the resources lifespan you get back (street use img) more than what it cost to originally put it in in the first place! Secondly, i don't have street gardens because i didn't want to spend any more time there gardening, (my gardens are in the back)(same reason i don't have rocks). My gardens are in the back because i liked knowing said plants were there, and wouldn't be picked except by me. I don't have a garden but i DO have a Freebie Jeebies pile. At times it has been wiped out, but more often ppl do what the sign says, take some leave some, im not going to say its not aggravating when its wiped out....it can be. HOWEVER just like the gardens, its in the front yard, i exspect certain things to happen from time to time. The front yard is still a public street. If i blocked ppl, well....first, i only block if the person is being harrasing / bothersome to an EXTREME degree.Secondly, when i check who visited by asking the butler, there's almost NEVER one name on that list, so its very hard to know, who did what. There have been times i've cleared plots that weren't weeded, and therefore had no plants to feed the pigs, or herbs to shuck because the plots were ALREADY empty. And it was very rare that i was there for plots, odds are i was there for other resources, or the tower. As for blocking ppl from buying from your tower, that was your decision to put things up for sale, and in turn you want ppl to be ABLE to visit. If your selling below what the vendor will give when you sell, your going to have faster sales. 1 your price is low, and some will buy to simply sell. I'd prefer if ppl werent simply buying just to sell it, but i put it up for sale, if they want to "hop" from tower to tower trying to find things to sell, well i dont like it but thats their choice, im not going to yell about it, because i have the option on the SDB's not to sell anyways, and i can change the price too if i so wish. If i didn't want it to sell it wouldn't be there! Also this week i was completely out of cooked food, so i spent a good potion of this week just cooking. i kept cooking and i started to run out of basic supplies, which i needed BADLY, so i spent some time "hopping towers myself, to get enough basics that 1. I could finish cooking, and 2. have a small amount left over so i could collect basics again, but not be completely out in the mean time. End result i spent 10,000 currants doing so. Towers are for sales, (and some other uses) if you put things up for sale your implying your selling without stipulations as to what its being used for, its FOR SALE! Secondly your also implying your willing to accept currants FOR said items. And this isn't typical of me...but, if that's a persons stance on selling, i'm not going to buy from someone who's angry because i bought their product and gave them currants?!!!.......

  • I guess I am unable to understand the offense given to justify the name-calling. Maybe I want to cut a better deal for a level 5 than a level 40, or not sell an item at all to someone I don't know. Maybe I don't want to sell No-No to someone under 10, or have a better price for a cooking group or friends. I accept the current mechanics do not allow for this level of detail beyond a certain amount of Group involvement, private trading and extensive advertising.
Real world examples: student discount, reduced pricing programs based around general financial need, age requirements for tobacco products, warehouse pricing clubs, guild and trade halls.

I accept the items are for sale at the set prices, but reserve the right to refuse access when I find a visiting or buying habit becomes obnoxious. I don't advertise or ask people to come to my street, I'm not on any routes or connected to anything in any proactive way. If I create something I want to share with the world or post a photo, I stop selling anything I don't want to disappear in a flash. It's part of Glitch and I'm not complaining, I'm trying to share an alternate viewpoint and offer up honest feedback and suggestions.
Posted 4 months ago by Wandering Confusion Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Wandering Confusion, you may not be on any routes, but several 3rd party sites make that almost irrelevant.  For example, if I were looking for large amounts of butterfly milk, for whatever reason, I would go to this page, and move sequentially down the page until I had bought all I needed.   http://glitchmarket.com/auctions/drink/milk_butterfly/

I might not even notice that I had bought from you.  It certainly wouldn't be anything other than wise economic behavior, and it has nothing to do with whether or not you advertise, or whether or not you are proactive.  Your pricing makes you proactive if you are on at the top of that screen.

  • Three things after reading all that:

1 - I have probably been blocked by some people already and have no idea, since I sometimes just enjoy hopping from home street to home street and looking at designs (and now, with towers, doubly so). It is just fun to me - my style of game.

2 - Also, when I replant empty gardens, I treat the herbs as flowers - so I usually would make flower beds with them. With pleasing colours and patterns. (Of course if someone clearly states what they want planted, I'm happy to oblige, but if you come and see stripey gardens or patterned gardens just fo the heck of it, yeah, probably me.)

3 - Now I am getting paranoid, same as (I think) Not a Princess mentioned earlier: as if I *had* to clear, water and replant. Not sure it is the results people were aiming for,
Posted 4 months ago by Verea Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Out of my own personal rule, I only use the self-replenishing items on home streets unless on a resource route.  Trees and rocks are fair game, but I assume that the home owner wants the gardens unless stated otherwise.

While, yes, they are "public" streets, the fact that the home owner can kick me off of their's makes me feel this is the proper action.  If they wanted the gardens to be picked, they would join the resource routes.   Now for my random yelling.  This is ONLY my OPINION and does not necessarily reflect the meaning of the verb KICK.

Have I planted purple?  Yes.  When I was going for a planting badge, I hit the herb routes and planted only quick growing items because I never intended to harvest them---and only in empty plots.

I'm going to sit on the sidelines and comment on all the random YELL words again :)

  • After reading most of the posts in this thread I'm left confused and uneasy:

    - I thought that if a person put items in their tower for sale, it was just that -- they expected to sell them. Apparently this is not always the case.

    - I thought that public streets were, in fact, er.. public, and that if you put resources there you expected (hoped, even!) that visitors would use them. Again, this does not always appear to be the case.

From now on I am only going to visit streets on the HRR routes. I love to visit towers and usually purchase items while I am there, but I will probably stop buying from towers just in case an item for sale is not really for sale.

I understand that people play in different ways, but thinking that I might unknowingly make some kind of tower or street mistake and upset another glitch makes me very uncomfortable.

Everyone is welcome in my street, please use and enjoy all the resources. If I have items for sale in my tower, they really, really are for sale.

  • I'm still curious why people with herb gardens in their public streets think their resources deserve different controls to other resources.

Restoring costs shouldn't be a factor as there are resources that cost more to restore (shiny rocks) and there are so many people willing to fix resources if an alert is put out that, really, any project is a non-issue.

I never cop grief from bouncing around random streets if it's non-herbs, but so many herb street owners have issues about resource use... I'm really confused why herbs are different.

Since lately I've been bouncing around towers without even looking at resources unless they fall between the landing point and the tower, I am curious how many things I've been blamed for that I didn't even know existed.

Anyway, I've asked this a number of times and as yet no one has answered it.

My bad?  Now I have gardens in my back yard and I am glad I don't have to deal with this craziness. I look at my butler because I am grateful for my visitors. I am working on more icons and goodies to give my visitors. And I view each visitor as a precious and unique gift. Welcome and joy and abundance!

  • I don't have my herbs in the front to combat this issue. But people should be able to control their herb gardens or any of the resources on their street as they wish. Those streets are attached to our houses, we decorate them and personalize them and spend time and iMG on them.  So why not be able to control certain aspects of where our homes are? The places that people consider extensions of themselves?

I want people to come to my street, it's why I'm on a route and have things for sale in my tower and talk to people in global. Other people may not want to play this way, and I absolutely respect their desire to experience the game in a way that's joyful and fun for them. Having the ability to control that would make a lot of people happy without them feeling like they need to block people from their home street in order to maintain what their idea of fun is in the game.
Posted 4 months ago by Violet Faulds Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Is it not your street though. They are public streets, so why should someone be able to control the public resources? The iMG spent is returned, over time, as people visit and use your resources. So that point is pretty moot.

Thinking it's your street, and only yours, is fine. It doesn't change the fact that this is not the case though. If someone does not want to play this way then fine. Don't put things in your front yard. As soon as you place something in the front you agree to it being used by the public.

  • Heres a question, had the resources on the street been assigned instead of ppl paying IMG for them, even though the resources are paid for over the course of time easily with street use(from resources) IMG.....would this discussion of happened. I think we should be grateful that we got to choose which resources we want, and we can remove them if and when we wish, aside from that i think its a luxury we get IMG from them being used at all!  You should be grateful when people use your resources , that alone is a gift, you get IMG! I dont get why anyone would specify they get what is harvested as well, in a way this is implying you don't want ppl to use your resources at all. If the person visiting gives you all they harvested and also give you IMG....what reason are they really having to visit? other than to simply say hi, or drop something off to the butler? There are many locations in the game that have the same resources you do, please just be glad they are visiting at all.

  • That's funny, because when I click on your name in game I get a "Visit Evelynddra's Home Street" option. It doesn't say  "Visit The Public Street That Evelynddra's House Just Happens To Be On" option.

Players can put machines and icons on their home street. Those machines and icons are there for anyone to use while they are outside, however they cannot be taken from the home street by anyone but the owner. Is it a public resource? Yes, it can be used by the public. Does the public have the ability to take the machine or icon. No, because ownership of the machine or icon prevents you from taking control of it.

If someone's herbs in their front street are dear to them then they should have the ability to lock it so that someone can't ruin their idea of what fun gameplay is, rather than be bullied by a mob mentality of "It's outside, it's mine for the taking and if you don't like the way I play the game then too bad for you." Which is an offensive user experience if you don't agree with the mob.

  • I could complain about the fuel being used in the machines on my street, but i don't, the fuel gets used as well, this is ecspecially  true if you have wood trees or metal rocks on your street. Odd that those groups aren't up in arms.......

  • Violet Faulds - And if in real life I were your friend and I were going to stop by and visit you I might think, "I'll pop over to Violet's street." But I would certainly never think, "I'll pop over to The Public Street That Violet's House Just Happens To Be On." Nevertheless I would not believe that you owned the street that you live on.

  • I love that the new player pops in, says this all makes no sense because obviously streets are public and whatever is placed on them is there for the using/taking.

This mechanic you are asking for, Violet, exists.  It's called the backyard.  And a 30 second lock period where only the planter can harvest the plant.

Why should TS waste time making more special code for herb gardens when they already did that and gave us private yards and keys to control access to those gardens?  Seems they are pretty clear about it in the tutorial.

There is no problem to solve.

  • Okay, so.  A game can't be everything to everyone.

People have different ideas of what fun gameplay is. Sometimes that's not going to match up with what Tiny Speck's given us.

  • I don't follow your first statement so I'll just address the second one.

There's no problem for me to solve, Sauceleh. I use the exact game mechanic that you describe. However, I recognize that not everyone wants to play the game the way I do. Would I lock resources on my home street if we had that option? No.  Would I respect and not be upset if someone had locked herb plots on their street? Absolutely.

I just think that having the option to lock resources is better than the wholesale blocking of people on streets entirely.

  • I think there are options that already exist in the game that are better than both of those.
