Why I'm quitting Glitch instead of subscribing:

This case was opened for you by the Staff.Hello,

It has been brought to our attention that you were being abusive towards another player, and that is against our Community Guidelines. This email is to warn you that if this continues your account may be suspended. I would hate to see this happen so please review our guidelines here: www.glitch.com/guidelines/

Thank you,Submitted: Oct 29, 2011 • 5:24pm (Pacific)RepliesYour reply:   26 hr agoIf this is from the player I suspect it was, this stems from an argument in Ajaya Bliss that arose because several of us were leaving food on the ground for an AFK player and the person I argued with was inexplicibly angry about what we were doing.

This player was highly abusive toward several others in the street, including calling one of the other players a 'fuckwad'. When I pointed out that his attitude was more fitting of other Internet games he made it clear that he found this extremely offensive.

At any rate, I'd like to know, please - has a staff member reviewed chat logs from the period in which I was reported? If so, please let me know as I don't feel that I said anything unwarranted. If staff has seen what I said and considers it abusive, I'm probably not a good fit for the game and I'd like to quit before I waste any money subscribing. Thanks in advance!Staff reply:   2 hr agoHello,

Yes, I read the entire conversation of every single thing that was said in the room by everyone. The whole thing was a bit heated, and the best course of action probably should have been to walk away, but really, I understand what you were trying to do for your friend, and it was a nice gesture. Unfortunately, blocking other player's ability to use community resources is not cooperative play, and that was the major issue here. Next time, if you decide to drown someone in food and drink, just try to make sure it doesn't inhibit anyone else's game play. You certainly weren't the worst offender in the room, and I don't see you having this type of problem again, but I still had to warn you. I hope you are able to continue to have fun in game, and continue pranking with your friends, just be considerate of others who aren't in on the festivities. :D

Your reply:
Thank you for your response. I'm glad to know that you read the chat logs. I was leaning toward subscribing but if my behaviour was potentially bannable then I'll be quitting the game. I don't want to spend time and money on this game if something as trivial as dropping food near a potential mineral spawn point is cause for me to lose my account.

I've sold my house and my items, I'll delete my character in a couple of days so this ticket isn't automatically closed. Thanks for your time.
---------------Have fun, Glitches.

  • Hmm. One the flip side of the coin you have to think about their liability and how lawyers can loop through their guidelines to bite them in the butt if they didn't take some sort of formal action.

And another thing is that in this game there are many players who are not your average Joe (which could be used against them).

You don't have to really quit and all, but if you want to have fun and not have it misunderstood, just be sure to hit me up.

Again, I'm not some legal expert, so what would I know.

  • Two questions:

    1) what makes you think this is the best recourse? (Note that we can't know what your behavior -was-, so it's tough for an observer say if it should be bannable or no)

    2) what makes you think this thread will stay open? I'm pretty sure that complaints about staff interaction isn't the sort of thing they cotton to.

    (edit, adding a third)
    3) since you've already deleted, isn't this entire thread a giant waste of your and our time?

My initial thoughts are that I am very disturbed by this development and think I should speak up.

  • although i wasn't there at the time the trouble happened, i was one of a bunch of people pranking the afk player by dropping food all around her (and i didn't realize until now that the are was close to a mining spot).

i don't know what went down and what was said to who, but i feel that ajaya has brought me so much fun exactly for being a tolerant place in which people can get together and have harmless - although occasionally a bit sassy - fun.

i for one would be very sorry to see lurid - or any other player - go, and specially on account of a disagreement like this one. it's a loss to what is otherwise, as i see it, a great community.

  • Staff was more than friendly and cooperative - going well beyond to explain the situation and why the player was being warned. Warned being the operative word, and repeatedly requesting that the player check out the community guidelines to prevent future issues.

Clearly player does not think it's possible to control his/her behavior in game in accordance with the guidelines, and is doing the right thing by removing themselves from the game.

    What a noble gesture.

  • Saro, it's all about context. I doubt anyone will get a warning just for dropping food. We don't know what was said by the other player or how he perceived this. Apparently he thought the behaviour to be abusive. Personally, I think staff handled this just fine. They have to take every abuse report seriously, even when it seems trivial to some of us.

  • I was there. I saw it all go down. Some players decided to prank another, food got in the way of one spawn place. It was still possible to mine, same as when a player dies on a rock. There were still 13 more places to mine. I did not participate in the food placing, but continued mining as usual. Things stared to get heated up, insults were thrown and people reported. The atmosphere of a usually friendly place got really annoying and I just left.
People, it is a game, the idea is to have fun, not to overreact to every little thing, such as food in front of a rock or quitting when confronted.

You and me both.  I'm highly averse to the possible drama special seam streets like AB can engender, so other than the one time I went in for my Completist badge; I've never been back.  There's nothing in there that is worth putting up with the possible rude behavior.

  • Reports should stay between the people concerned and the staff. That's the only way anyone can get the full story on any issue - either by being there to witness it, or by being staff and seeing logs.
Attempting to bring the drama to the public forums is kind of pointless really.

Anyhow, good luck with whatever it is you'll be doing instead of glitching :)

  • I agree that the Staff have to take every report seriously, but after they reviewed the logs (unless something was left out), I don't see how dropping food on the ground could be considered against the guidelines (in that it would be considered griefing or otherwise maliciously inhibiting the play experience of others).

There are so many ways to interact with EVERY element/resource to this game, to say that one becomes impeded means that ALL become unusable is an abuse of the reporting system. Staff, take note: There are at least 3 methods (that I can think of off the top of my head) to mine a rock in this game. Dropping food in front of a potential spawn point only "slows down" ONE of those interactions. In no way could you, in good conscious, claim that "blocking other player's ability to use community resources" was occurring here.

It was rash on Lurid's part to quit, however, the idea that being banned for just about any little, trivial thing because some "This is how you play" Glitchen reports you, it does raise some concern. And from what I can gather, the report was on the food dropping, not so much the language.

Regardless, I hope this single, erroneous complaint from a single user does not, yet again, result in the severe altering of existing gameplay to solve a problem that didn't exist in the first place.

I don't know what data you have access to that the rest of us can't see, but I wonder at your conclusion that a single complaint has ever caused severe altering of existing gameplay.  I also wonder how you conclude that a complaint is "erroneous".

If a problem doesn't exist, then there's nothing to complain about.  If someone complains, then there is the possibility that there is a problem, and staff apparently investigated and found that there were violations of the TOS.  However you define problems, violations of the TOS would appear to meet the definition.

  • @Tamashii: it was just a warning not a banhammering though, i assume you can acquire a couple minor warnings before the Giants fling you into non-existence. but i agree with the wish that TS doesn't make it a habit to contort itself to the will's of easily offended players.

i give props to TS for maintaining such a responsive nature but they do run the risk of having a community devolve into one that cries for mommy to solve conflicts instead of themselves. we do definitely need better measures we can take to rid our personal game experience of those few annoying glitches (i.e. better block/ignore system).

  • koolaroo, the OP wasn't banned.  They deleted their own account.

If you read the post, you can see exactly what staff said.  What we don't know is what was in the chat logs that staff read.  Since that was what the warning was based on,  I'm going to assume that staff used their best judgment in handing out warnings instead of banning.

  • Then can we ban players from abusing the 12 side dice in parties? They also seem to slow everything down. Well yes we can kick them out too... But the dice rolling I find it so annoying ever since the game opened to a everyone. You can't even walk through a street properly. And sorry if this offends any dice roller out there, I don't mean to control your way of playing the game either.

  • I'm willing to bet that the warning here came not from the specific act of dropping food by itself, but from the attitude that came along with it. We have no idea what things were said on the part of the OP--the specific words in the chat log would make the difference between staff determining that the action was innocent pranking, or intentional, malicious griefing. The chat log must have shown that it was the latter. We should be happy--other games would have banned without a warning.

  • >Yes, I read the entire conversation of every single thing that was said in the room by everyone. The whole thing was a bit heated, and the best course of action probably should have been to walk away

I believe this is the reason the warning was given, not for dropping food. However saying that people (I have witnessed this with my own eyes) will go around AB purposefully dropping bubbles or food or even flour that blends in with the floor at the spawning points to try to mess up people mining. This is simply to antagonizes users. Its possible that the user who complained just got tired of people doing this and finally snapped, even if this particular user didn't mean that it might not have come across that way.

But by the looks of things the warning wasn't for the action of the player, but for their reaction. He even stated that the player in question made it clear that they had been offended by a comment. Yet OP makes no indication they felt they were in the wrong after blatantly offending someone. Even this reaction is a bit dramatic. The question is did OP make a complaint as well? Or did they try to take matters into their own hands?

  • Hmmm I understand both sides of this, I don't think i'd quit even over the principle that the rules are too harsh. I understand that it would impede someones play a slight amount but as was mentioned you can easily access resources aside from using the enter key.

I think this whole thing was blown out of proportion by both the complaining player, the OP and the staff.

    Just my two currants.

It's really interesting to see, not what other players do, but our own reactions. By examining my own dopey reactions to things I can understand myself better.

  • Basically, the point of what staff was saying is to not escalate things.  Stuff always goes downhill from there.  I used to be a Corrections Officer, and that's one of the things we were taught.  Don't ever raise your voice, as that will cause the other person to raise their voice over yours, then it keeps going on from there.  Eventually it just raises into the level of violence.

That is why they want people to use the "walk away" approach.
