  • *gasps for breath*

Almost there Gerty/Georgia, now just add some comma's and / or periods when you would normally, when speaking, put a pause or take a breath.
Then use a capital letter behind every period you use and voila, your text becomes much more pleasant to read. Spelling errors aren't so bad in my opinion, it is about the effort behind it.
You say you are too lazy to type out words, but you expect other people to be not lazy and make an effort to understand you and answer you? And fast as well, seeing you were very impatient? It is a bit disrespectful to others that way.

The internet can be a rough place for a kid, as you have noticed. The people here argue and debate like adults, and like you are an adult. They expect you to react in a way an adult would react.
If you are a kid, you cannot yet react that way as you still have things to learn about social interaction. Things like sarcasm, debating, not taking things personal, trying to convince others with arguements, leaving emotion out of a discussion. You can get hurt. I sense from your previous posts that you are hurt, which is not very surprising. But I do think you are a kid that has been hurt due to adults not knowing it was a kid they were talking to.

The older you get the less difference your age makes, but it matters when you are young. (age 0-2 is very different from age 5-7. Age 40-42 isn't very different from 45-47).
So are you or are you not younger then 15?

Edit: I think I am pretty sure you are 11.

  • MarcM: She's really 11.

I was not entirely correct about finding lots about her, but I know which school she went to and to which school she will be going, I know some RL names of her friends. That isn't her fault though, I can't find much about her, but it's her friends that need an internet safety education.
For an adult, it would matter less if it is easy to find out your real name or where you live or who your employer is.
But as she is underage I think it does matter a lot.

  • exactly, but she doesnt even need to post her age, its obvious by her posts that she's young, i think she could be younger then 11 or an very immature 11 year old

  • Editing reply...

Well, actually, after re-reading this thread, I realize that Victoria has some good points. You could easily be in college and have dyslexia, and I'd believe that...but she's right, you do act younger, aside from spelling/grammar.

  • Well, gerty if you are the age that you claim, you can unblock me.  I friended you because you seemed to be a tiny squiggle of a thing, and I wanted to keep an eye on who might be talking to you (I have two kids who are online a lot).  But...since you are all capable and stuff, I won't worry so much about you anymore, and don't worry, I am not out to get ya!

  • Should we set an upper age limit to get rid of fuddy-duddies?  "No one older than sixty admitted without doctor's note."

Personally, I find the idea offensive, since age is rarely a determining factor in someone's personality or abilities.

  • Nanookie you are very sweet and considerate!

And @glum, the reason why it's different to keep younger children out of the game is because the content is questionable for young children to be reading.  Although I have to say the bad content in this game is probably easy for children to miss

  • Text-speak and poor writing/spelling/grammar is annoying to read, but as far as I am aware, it's not personally offensive. I've yet to meet someone who has had their feelings hurt by someone's misspelling or lack of punctuation.

I get that people are concerned that this style of communication is bad for the community's health. However, I can think of only a few posters who use this style, and it's easy enough to pass over the threads, and resist the urge to enter with an aim to "tutor" the poster into a writing style above his/her capability. I think that sort of behavior, combined with the sort of cruelty, bullying and near-cyberstalking in threads like these, is even worse for community health.

People don't sign up for Glitch to be humbled, they sign up to have fun (not counting potential masochists for whom being humbled = fun... hey, it takes all kinds, folks). There is no excuse for humiliating someone for their communication shortcomings in a game forum, or forcing them to defend something as benign as poor language skills by issuing multiple disclaimers about something as personal as a learning disability (and this isn't the first time I've seen it here), or by making up stories to try to fit in. Gerty/Georgia's style might annoy some, but she's not hurting anyone. She doesn't deserve to be hurt in return. We're all better than that, aren't we?  Let's not be eloquent jerks.

I agree there's probably an under-ToS-age issue going on here, but it's probably more effective and practical (and kind) to address these concerns with Tiny Speck via less public channels.

Now I propose we all join hands and sing Kumbaya. Who's with me?

  • +100 Eureka & Nanookie.

Come on folks, do we need to pick on an 11 year old? (or a college student with dislexia, whichever the case may be)
