Glitches don't care about Dice rolls Rooks... or Ur?

Today I spent a bit of my time making Ur a bit more alive. Or not, if you don't consider that "alive"... I went around a few places of Tamila making dice rolls and leaving some (dice rolled) Rooks, which left a good amount of animals and plant population rooked. I announced it on Global, but it seems I didn't get ANY response that suggested "worry" or interest. Seems that my game of hide & seek rooked places was a failure, even in Rook Attack group. People only seem to care about "real" Rook attacks.

So, even if all Ur was rooked by these "fake" Rooks, people still wouldn't care about Ur? Mind you, I am not rooking for the sake of "trolling", I just want to give people activities to do outside home streets... other than foxes/quoins/ancestralands/enchantedforest/sloths, also it is a "community game".

Should Tiny Speck make the Rook much more numerous, dangerous or something? Maybe dice rolls could turn into real rooked places after a while if rooked mobs aren't tended? Or anything...? Well, I am a bit at a loss of words, so feel free to comment about all this :P

  • I completely agree with you!!! However, I find Rook attacks pretty boring, so they need to figure out how to make attacks more adventurous! :)

  • Rook has the same problem as the street project system.  Trivial for long-time players, too big for beginners.

  • perhaps another thinking versus feeling issue.

Some people will "feel" for the animals, sympathize, and want to help them (see the pig rescues for an example).

I, on the other hand, just think a line of code triggered another line of code that triggers the animals to display rooked art assets.  They could stay that way forever for all I care -- they're just lines of code.  There's not much incentive for me to trigger another line of code to have them display their standard art assets.

  • I avoid rook attacks because of the mood and energy loss, horribly slow FPS, resultant accidental donations to shrines, and so on, and I know I'm not alone in this.  The Rook Alerts groups would probably be better places to mention the attacks, but since people usually have to TP over to where the attack is going on, and TPing is expensive, they may not be interested if it's a minor (rolled) attack.

  • Rook attack to me is: 1. Hey..A Rook..Great... 2. Alright lets see...Meditation..Stun Attack. 3.Shrine, donate...done 4. Walk away like nothing happened..

Yeah, Rook attacks are somewhat boring now...

  • i go to rook attacks.

i game philosophy, one defends against them.

    i do not help rookrolls.

if you make messes on purpose, do not expect me to come clean up. do not even interrupt my train of thought (let alone any activity) to ask.

yes, that would be awesome if there were something at stake in rook attacks.

similarly, it would be swell if rookrollers got commensurate consequences for rolling rook. like maybe you lose a big pile of img or currants or maybe everything in your bags disappears.

    that'd make things more lively!

  • I think the rook should be more dangerous, create more destruction, happen in more populated areas, take a lot more work to get rid of, and give more rewards for defeating him.

I also think rook rolls should summon a full on rook attack IMO. Right now, no one likes a "rook roll".  Also, the blue dice  (whether rolled by me, or someone else) create unreal amounts of lag for me that usually end in my game crashing.  I hate the blue dice - A LOT.

  • I went to a few rook attacks when it was young. I'd say you can max out the number of players and its over in seconds. In that case it should be instanced, plus if I'm not carrying any spare loot I'm willing to donate its not worth partaking. Plus healing the animals before the rook is dead sorta winds me up so I stopped taking part. Too many rules.

  • maybe... if an area gets rooked and no-one tends to it, maybe there should be a way that the area becomes unavailable for a set amount of time, i.e, the street gets closed off for a few days while it recovers by itself. that might shake people into acting a bit more urgently? this would obviously only work if a rook attack was announced globally automatically...

dumb question, but really, what is the difference between a rook roll and a real attack? don't they result in the same thing; poisoned animals and trees? so... shouldn't a roll matter just as much as an actual attack?
Posted 7 months ago by onion Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I like helping the animals and trees, so I'd be just as interested in a rolled rook attack. But I don't yet have enough skill at teleporting to get there on my own, and people are only willing to summon for a real rook attack.

  • onion: rook attacks must be fought off, resulting in iMG rewards for those that participated.  There is no incentive to fix the animals, and doing so takes a good chunk of time.  Next time you're at a rook attack, take note: most of the street will clear out as soon as the the attack is done.   While there are always those that fix the animals, only a small portion that showed for the attack will do any fixing.

So while the end result of a roll is the same as an attack, there are reasons to be present at an attack, but no reason to clean up the mess unless you are the type to think of the animals as having feelings or the like.  I'm not, so if I only have so long to play, why should I use that time to fix animals I don't need to use for no reward?

I mean, there's probably a street right next door with the same trees and animals, so no great loss.

ETA: This is why people in Rook Alerts want confirmation that an event is an attack and not a roll.  Otherwise, they're dropping energy to teleport and getting nothing in return.

  • AGREE +1

My Imagined Ideas, a Huge One.

What if... a Rook Attack wasn't tended (I think the Attack starts when the first person stumbles upon it, to make it fair) for a long time (hours/days) the street would be more damaged than just harmed piggies and trees.

Streets should have a corroded art. The street will turn black, crumble, etc. when Rooked for a long time. Some places may be too dangerous to walk into. Like a hole. These holes would either TP you to some other street in region, or would fling you back on safe ground (like in Lava Leap) so you would have to jump, spinach, or levitate across.

Certain parts of the area may be cordoned off by Deimaginators, and if you get near them, they may start shouting at you. Get closer, they may start driving you off their land (like Fox Ranger if you don't have a brush on hand or a license). You would have to jump, spinach, or levitate across them.

They may work like juju too. If you're on their land for too long, they may shout out threats and chase you across the whole street (for a certain amount of time).

All this damage may take a while to heal. The Rook will keep hurting the street (even deimagining it, to the point of near non-existence) as long as it is attacking. Super harmed streets may appear red or hurt on the map even, unlike current normal attacks. Or there may be a list in your nearest Bureaucratic Hall.

Perhaps there will be stages. The normal attack, and 72 hours (or something) after that, the street goes into Back Up Requested, Red Alert, then Critical, then Emergency, then Evacuate, or something like that.

As the Rooks get more power over Ur, Rook Attacks may be more frequent in nearby areas.

At each further stage it may be harder to drive back the Rook.  Perhaps it will cost multiple Emblems of the Giant of the shrine that the street is on (emblem sink perhaps?), or you may may even need to ... be it not, SACRIFICE ICONS to summon and empower the Giant.

Possibly, you must create a Temporary Shrine, Altar, Enshrinement, Temple, Sanctum, Last Stand, Holy Grounds or otherwise religious and holy place of the Giant of the shrine there. There, the damage dealt the to the Rook is greater, and more needed. You may have to donate items, like the shrine, but when this Temporary Shrine-thing is needed, other items may be needed. For example multitudes of players to contribute work units (prayer), emblems, icons, or just a game daily HELP button. Or more stunning is needed, or priming is more useful, or even radiation, or meditation.

I know many people have unlearned Piety I and Martial Imagination because they can just help out by clicking on orbs in the stunning phase and donating when primed. They don't need the skills, only other people. There possibly could be more skills, using those as prerequisites. Such as that Temporary Shrine-thing Erecting. Or some Prayer thing. Or Piety II. Rook Ranging I.

Possibly, at later stages, you cannot simply DEFEAT the Rook, but throw back its power slowly. You must go through all the stages, from 5, to 4, to 3, until you are at the first stage, where you must do the current, quick, fast system of stunning, priming and donating.

Possibly, going back to earlier stages cannot be done until the sideeffectual damage of the current step is done. For example, said holes and deimaginators may need to be filled up and pleased. Dirt, loam, peat, and such will be needed. Or hatchet tool units (you know, to fill up the hole, not to whack the deimaginators...). Or General Building Permits.

These types of projects may be small, unplanned, street projects. Only, if they are built in a way so they cannot be completed by a large number of people in a couple minutes (like people may just stop by and contribute a tiny bit per day, like a game daily only click to help), then the problem that caused TS to remove street projects (too many people on a street causing lag) may be avoided.

These could be a replacement to Street Project badges and/or trophies. All contributors will of course be given massive amounts of iMG (depending on how much they did) and possibly, the top contributors can be given a Street Project trophy piece, just like Street Projects. TS may choose to keep them called Street Projects, or change everything to Rook Ranging.

P.S. Side note. Post Scriptum or some other creepy Latin phrase.

What I envision, is HUGE. Bigger than Street Projects, as big as the current new stuff, own own Housing, Home Streets, a new world, Imagination. All that. If this idea is as how I envision, it'll be the new fab (only tinier) after this. Months later. Not just something quickly done.

Staff will have to put tons of work into this:

    -damaged street art
    -deimaginators
    -holes
    -street/rookranging projects
    -skills
    -badges
    -rewards
-new (or should I saw, improved, added on, more) forms or techniques and rook ranging

A lot. This will be hugee!
We need art. We need everything to be good. Perhaps a chance for staff to build something new, and artistically different, just like housing currently is doing for us. And the numbers needed to repair things, will be huge. Hundreds, thousands, of items and currants!

It'll be something to sink all these things. Gems, musicblocks, currants. It'll be something not just 1, or 10 Glitchen can do. It'll take at least 50 Glitches, even if half of those can contribute a million currants worth of items (you know, at really bad stages...).

TL;DR Basically, I think Rook Ranging should be a bigger part of Glitch. A bigger game thing. As big as current new housing. More, new, improved parts to it. Read above for the details.

EDIT: Orrrr... instead of the attack escalating at a certain time point from which the first Glitchen spies upon this attack (a Glitch seeing a Rook Attack but not stopping it is an act of deimaginating, and gives great power to the Rook thus allowing him to to really attack)

If the attack goes on for a really long time, or TS just gets bored, they can choose a certain attack and do the damaged art and manually do all that and make the Rook stronger there. he Rook Attack may not further usually, and anyways, normally with the group Rook Alerts, these attacks are done with almost instantaneously, so it is unlikely that a severe case of the Rook will ever happen.

Of course, if TS really likes these and does implement it with them choosing where and when (hopefully once a month), they can just create many rook attacks (like maybe 5 per day instead of the current 1 or 2) and eventually one of these will be ignored for a while, and then the Rookpocalypse will start.

    Our Supporters:
Grendaline  That's [exactly] the thing I'm looking for in this game, but I dunno if it's exactly what I want xD
Grendaline  The whole focus on getting a crapton of stuff and dumping it for no real reason is kind of [not] boring [but really fun].
Grendaline  We definitely need more lore related overarching endgame goals.

    Grendaline's Supporter:
    Effigy  yeah

Justin Daigle   Understand I've never played many other games, but I don't think an MMO is supposed to have endgame goals.
(But of course, But of course, this isn't an end game thing, but more like a bigger, more exciting thing for users to do. It's another infinite thing that's exciting and maintained (such as street projects). Well, in MMO terms, it is endgamey. I see why street projects were scrapped, but if TS can ingeniously come up with some idea that is scalable, that's awesome. Right now, there's no much GROUP COMMUNITY PLAYER things to do. That's big and infinite. TS focuses on Glitch being big, infinite, and community. Right now, you can just keep harvesting and stuff, but there's no thing to contribute to. Rare items, that's all, I think. There should be something more, infinite, for the more advanced players to contribute their items to.
Effigy  it would be like raids in WoW)

  • yay, palindrome!

i'm to lazy to go up and see who said the thing about people not helping the animals, but i know when an attack is over you'd better step lively or there will be no animals left to help.

and all those helpers get very rule-y about whether you can revive animals and trees before the attack is over; i think it stems from a desire to get a bigger share of the pie. oh, no! how ill *i* get maximum img from both the donations AND the reviving if other people revive before the attack is over?

we can't have that! we better make rules!

somebody get me a hat and an armband!

i mean, i can understand if there are too few people to fight the rook and something is at stake and people are dillydallying over chickens, but let's face it: if there are twenty people at the shrine it's going to be over in a few minutes and unless it's a real problem for someone that a different person uses their shiny new rook balm and gets the handful of img, i'd just as well not have self-appointed hall monitors shouting at people.

but yeah. i remember the great battle of scaup low.

i remember it because before that battle scaup low didn't have so many fallen trees and people were slow to get there and after it was over the landscape was littered with fallen trees.

it was a time when the devs were testing rook attacks heavily. scaup low was a brand new street then, a carbon copy of some other forest street and probably they were just waiting for the rook attack to put in the real art.

so next time you're at maker sank and scaup low (the battle spread to a second street), you look for the fallen logs and the stumps. those weren't there before the great rook battle.

these days it's a foregone conclusion and nothing is lost except maybe an orb.

if there are going to be battles, let them carry risk.

and let failure to respond also carry risk.

  • I didn't say people don't help the animals.  I just said most do not.  There can be 50 players at a rook attack; afterwards, 10 will help the animals.  That's still plenty to make it feel like you have to rush to even help one, but it shows that most are only there for the rewards and unlikely to respond to a roll, where there are no rewards.  I'd say the fact that rook alerts doesn't want to hear about rolls and asks for confirmation that an attack is an attack proves my point as well.

Helping animals during the rook attack won't change anything about rewards.  If anything, it's just pointless -- if the attack isn't over, they just end up rooked again.  I have been to many rook attacks, and I have never seen anyone yell at anyone for helping animals.  Given your history for such reactions, I'd bet a single player at a single attack said something about it with the intent of saving you from wasting your time, and you interpreted it as someone "telling you what to do" rather than just good advice.

  • Regarding "consequences" for people who roll a rook - that would be rather unfair to newer players who don't even know what is happening. As soon as I had managed to get a bit of money together, when I was very new, I looked at a toy seller's inventory and decided I needed a 12-sided die because I thought it might do something amusing. I bought it, and I played with it until suddenly the Rook appeared. I had no clue what was going on, I didn't know about ordinary Rook attacks (and nowadays I go to everyone that is announced in the Rook Alert channel), so I just went on my way, thinking the effect would disappear on its own.

Had I been "punished" by losing all my bag contents or my money, as suggested above, that would have put me off the game in a major way.

  • I admit that I have once or twice told people not to bother with the animals while an attack was going on... but that really was had nothing to do with wanting all the IMG (really, you don't get that much, and who says that I would be the one to get IMG from reviving that particular animal anyway?), and with wanting to make up rules so that I can get as much as possible.

Rather, I say that because I assume they might be new to the thing, and when I was new myself, I just saw the clicky things appear, so I revived animals while people were trying to fight the Rook, or clicked on an orb and make it break... good Lord, now that I know it's such an issue, I'll refrain from saying anything.

  • I guess my question is, why are people bothered by rook rolls in the first place? Rook-rolling is something else to do in the game when a glitch is tired of harvesting the 1,000,000th bean tree and squeezed the 1,000,000th chicken. I mean, nibbling, milking, squeezing, harvesting, planting, crafting, cooking, and donating are all swell; I love this game. And playing with a 12-sided die is just another part of game play. *shrug*

  • Hey, Not a Princess, that's a good point about accidental Rook summons. I guess there's no way for a Rook to distinguish a Rook-lover from any other Glitch. It would be sad if they followed people home who didn't want them.

  • While I appreciate that there are many folks who enjoy the "rook attack" element of this game, there are also a lot of us who don't, and won't participate in it, for whatever reason. (I think I made it pretty darn clear how I feel about it all in the "Redeem the Rook" thread I started some time ago...maybe a bit *TOO* clear. :P)

Some folks would consider the OP's rook-rolling as nuisance behavior...doing something with the expectation of forcing people to react, which runs contrary to the OP's intended goal of encouraging cooperation. If folks don't jump to respond to a deliberate rook-roll, it doesn't mean they don't care about Ur; rather, they probably don't enjoy feeling put-upon by another's actions.

Regardless, I for one do not want to see the Rook become an even greater part of the game, at least not in a way that affects the global population. For folks who enjoy battling "evil" forces, I suggest a Glitch arena where anyone who is so inclined can go and test their mettle, leaving the rest of us to happily go about our harvesting, crafting, donating, badlands-hopping, tower-questing, street-visiting, home decorating, partying, and all the other pastimes that many of us do find so enjoyable and rewarding.

Rescuing Glitch fauna is not "fun" for me; I and others in the rescue group PIG do it as a community service, but it's not something I enjoy, per se. Our greater goal is to see our group become obsolete; we'd like to see our world become a happy and safe place for Glitchens and critters (and trees, and dare I add rooks) alike.

To each their own; there are so many wonderful and amazing elements of this game, and a plethora of different activities to partake in and enjoy, and there's no reason anyone should feel coerced into participating in ANY game aspect that is unsavory to them. Do your own thing, and let your freak-flag fly!

  • I have to disagree with you about no one responding to help the animals.  I happened upon quite a few streets today where animals lay dying from rook rolls; YOUR rook rolls I assume. When requested, people from global chat DID in fact come help revive the animals.

I must say, I was quite astonished to find UR in such a horrible state.  I thought to myself at the time, WHO would do something like this and just LEAVE it?!?!  I thought it was a really sucky thing to do.
Posted 7 months ago by jellybean4r2 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • LOL jellybean, when you say "your" I assume you're talking to the OP and not to me, who posted above you. I feel the same as you that it's a sucky thing to do, even if it wasn't intended as such; the whole "evil rook" thing is the one thing I *don't* like about this game. Luckily there's plenty of other fun stuff for me to do, so really I don't participate in the rook aspect at all, other than attempting to revive any rooked critters or trees I may stumble across. Thankfully that doesn't happen often, and yah, finding them in that condition is heartbreaking...not fun at all, at least not for me.

Real life ravens and crows are wonderful beings, and I absolutely adore my wild friends, so for that reason alone I can't bring myself to battle them in virtual reality, even if they are "just pixels." The "evil raven" stereotype is ridiculous and totally undeserved, and I'd love to see it fade away. Rather than battle a Glitch rook, I'd much rather have one as an in-game friend, so he could sit on my Glitch's shoulder and follow me everywhere around Ur....ooooooh! I'd name him Peabody. :D

  • Besides, nothing really happens to the animals if nobody helps for a while.  They just stay rooked until someone does.

Back in the day, we had this idea that we'd try to use rook rolls to clear out overcrowded streets, but it doesn't actually kill (disappear?) the animals, so not useful.
