Vegans/Vegetarians

I suggest being able to customize your character by making him/her vegan or vegetarian. So, no "meat" and nibbling on piggies. We could get energy instead or something.

  • I'm fairly certain this is already doable in-game as it is. Simply opt out of nibbling on piggies. There are plenty of other energy sources that aren't "animal" products. Since eggs grow on plants in game, we can safely assume that eggs are a great "cruelty free" food.

Since nibbling on piggies results in meat which give you energy, surely "petting" or nibbling a piggy should NOT result in energy rewards for a self-proclaimed vegetarian or vegan.

  • It doesn't make sense in Glitch, since the piggies LIKE being nibbled, and they GIVE you the meat. You can certainly abstain from eating meat, but al food in Glitch is "cruelty free."

  • IRL i do not drink or use drugs. can we have a teetotaler option for which we get bonuses for not using nono or beverages that contain hootch? can i get a virgin earthshaker?

or how about a monotheism badge that gives us learning benefits for piously going past idolatrous shrines without donating?

  • I remember being on Glitch's facebook page and some angry person was unhappy at how the tutorial involved nibbling on a pig. Maybe the rock could offer some kind of veggie-friendly alternative? The rock would say "nibble this pig!" and the player could respond "no way, rock-se!" and the rock would be all "never mind then!"

Aside: I have a vegetarian friend who plays Minecraft and did some texture change where the meat all looked like grilled tofu. The pigs still had to be smacked, though ...

  • Veganism and Vegetarianism are choices. Choices you have the ability to make within this game.

Removing the option to eat meat does not make you a vegetarian, it simply makes you incapable of eating meat. Vegetarianism loses all meaning when it is not a conscious choice!

(And no way to the removal of rewards for petting pigs! Vegetarians can still pet animals ;D)

  • For people who keep kosher, having a NON-PORK meat source would be probably be nice.

  • @Biohazard: I'm not advocated that self-identified vegans / vegetarians should not reap benefits from interacting with piggies, simply that they should not, hypothetically, gain energy from doing so. That seems to defeat the purpose of the very idea and definition of vegan/vegetarianism.

Bottom line is that I still fail to see why this needs to be an additional game functionality. Simply abstain from interacting with animals for food - no more grain, no more meat. Done. You're a glitch veghead.

  • Just a small joke/provocation when sending you this video: http://youtu.be/_TqyKsnQD38 So, don't take it seriously. :)
Personally I wouldn't have nothing against the existence of such option, but I believe that at this point it would affect too much the mechanic of the game (but I might be wrong). Therefore impossible... Unless you want to return to beta tests and to a new reset. ;)

  • I want to clarify that there are two issues worth discussing here -- regular gameplay, and the tutorial.

During regular gameplay, players have countless choices on what to do, interactions to avoid or participate in, foods to eat or avoid.  Players can choose to live their life in Ur in ways that parallel their life on Earth -- monotheists can restrict their donations to a single god, vegetarians and vegans can avoid eating meat, etc.

Contrast this with the tutorial, when the magic rock tells the player to nibble a piggy for meat.  The player has no way of knowing that this will put meat in their bags and not in their stomachs, and for some the distinction is negligible.  There's no way to say no, and no apparent way to skip out of the tutorial early into the main game.

For myself, I had planned to play the game vegetarian, as I am in life, but I wasn't too annoyed when the tutorial gave me the impression that this was not possible;  it is only a game after all.  There's also the complication that the purpose of the tutorial is to introduce game mechanics to new players;  could meat be left and the tutorial still be effective?
