Compared to other games...

How much do you like Glitch?

I don't play a lot of mmopgs and I would like the opinion of other people so that I can pimp out this game better.

Some people have said that this looks like a combination of Maple Story, Farmville and other retarded  games like that, as stated from some haters...

Considering that I have never played those games before, how different is Glitch from them from the point of view from the people who have played those games before and this one?

Thanks for reading.

  • Drakkar, while I'm sure you're just quoting your friends, using a derogatory term for intellectually and emotionally challenged people is not a good way to start a post on Glitch.

How about finding another way to describe games like Farmville and Maple story?

  • I've played several online games in my time. Including both Maple Story and Farmville.
Since I found Glitch, I play Glitch and nothing else.
I think that pretty much speaks for itself.

  • @WindBorn
Nope, I'm not quoting any of my friends, just random strangers in other websites. and tose were their words:

"So it's maplestory fused with farmville or another one of those retarded facebook time-based games.
    Why."

The problem is that I don't know a thing about those games to be honest. The last mmorpg  ever played was Tales of Pirates and that was a very long time ago.

@Ebil Hm, so would you say that Glitch is indeed different from those other two games?

  • Not gonna lie, Maple Story was a very well polished game with amazing experience and high rate of immersion.
Posted 14 months ago by Messy Monster Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I agree with Messy Monster - MapleStory was extremely fun to play, when I did play it. The art and music are beautiful, the world is huge and fun to explore. The gameplay, however, is comparable to the majority of Asian-style free-to-play MMORPGs. 99% of your time is spent in a constant grind for loot and XP. The people who spend the most money in the cash shop inevitably become the best players. I quit MapleStory because, when the cash shop came out, it frustrated me that some people could skip so much of the experience grind due to cash shop benefits that I couldn't pay for. I probably could have kept playing had the cash shop not been a factor, though - the world in MapleStory is beautiful and there were decent people to talk to if you looked hard enough.

So, I would say that Glitch and MapleStory are similar in the effort put into the art and the world, as well as the cute style of the characters, animals, and scenery. They are not similar in gameplay, aside from those elements which are common to all RPGs.

I have never played Farmville, so I can't comment on it.

  • Here is how I've described it:
"So Jim Henson and Salvador Dali get a bit high and start playing Farmville. They get bored so they play some Little Big Planet. Then they watch so Monty Python. They read some EVE blogs to each other while making a large meal. While feasting, they discuss the nature of the Universe and human kindness. Before they go to sleep they sketch out the game they'd make.

Glitch is not that game but would be one the same shelf at GameStop."

  • Oh jeebus, you used the "R-word", prepare for the crap storm!  On another note, I love all of the Glitch Api coming out for the game, I really loved addons in all of the other games I have played, so I am happy to see it in Glitch.

  • Oh I don't know, I play Pony Island and (fluff)Friends too and sometimes OviPets and this one completely steals my time.  Seriously all my ponies nearly starved to death once I started playing Glitch.

In the past I've played Maple Story (loved it, didn't keep me though), WoW (not my thing, too much violence), and several other MMORPGs that aren't even worth mentioning.  Everquest.. Ultima Online.. etc.. Glitch wins hands down.  It's like if WoW / Ultima / EQ met the new Super Mario Bros for Wii.  And then threw in some (fluff).  Yes.  Like that.  ^__^

  • Glitch is very different in its mechanics from almost all of the Facebook games like Farmville, Cityville, the Sims, etc., because it does not incorporate the Social Extortion factor.  In Farmville and other S.E. games, in order to advance in the game, you must send out and respond to at least 30 emails a day asking you to send specific game resources that cannot be obtained any other way.

While Glitch is often very social, it is also possible to accomplish most of the game tasks solo.  The cooperative tasks that exist are usually announced and organized on the large chats, by whoever is online at the time, rather than requiring specific friends or groups to finish.  There is a player market-place and trading, but there are no standard activities that require you to beg other players to send you specific items (and in fact that's generally considered kind of rude).

The movement in Glitch is like a side-scrolling platformer, which some folks find fun, but I personally find frustrating, since I lack the right kind of coordination.  Main gameplay in Glitch is a lot like other online RPG's, but it focuses on the skills and crafting aspects of the game.  There is a variety of plant, animal and mineral resources to harvest and then make food, tools and other items from.

There are minor conflicts with the Rook, an evil NPC, but in general the game has no fighting and definitely no PvP combat.  The harshest interactions in game are arguments over whether someone was acting selfish by exploiting a certain resource or taking an accidentally dropped item.  A large number of people find that social interactions among the players are very friendly and an important aspect of why they continue playing.

  • Compared with the numerous village management browser-based persistant games such as Travian, Ikariam and OGame:
    * Glitch has superior animated graphics.
    * Glitch has no method of destroying or stealing another player's property or facilities (unless a player lets another player into their house).
    * Glitch has many more features (cooking, crop-growing, alchemy, rook-defence, etc).
    * Glitch only has a single world shared by all users instead of separate worlds on separate servers.
    * Glitch, at the moment, doesn't constantly stress the in-game advantages that can be purchased with real-world money.

Compared with the few Facebook-like games I've explored, Glitch doesn't offer in-game advantages by recruiting additional players as friends.

Anything else anyone else wants to add?

  • I think it might be interesting to compare the different world creation and modification facilities offered by Glitch, online virtual worlds such as Second Life, and traditional 3D simulator programs such as Trainz (the train simulator).

I could waffle on in some detail but it would probably be far better to simply refer you to Wikipedia if you want to persue this more:

  • A little background: I come from the age of anime-style Asian MMORPGs. In fact, I still play them normally. (Just applied for alpha testing Lime Odyssey and am a semi-regular for Ragnarok Online, if that says anything.) Attempted Maple Story once and gave up at around Lv16 or so because hi, Korean grind fest. It gets boring after a while.

    Enough of that.

Glitch is a... different, approach to MMO(RPG? Is Glitch an MMORPG?). I don't have to worry about leveling and aiming for the highest level here. I don't have to worry about getting super rare loots from monsters here. I don't have to spend 3 hours clearing a dungeon here. In fact, I don't have to play more than 2 hours a day here if I don't feel like it and it will not hurt me, since we're not competing with each other for the highest level or whatever.

How much I like this game? Let's say I don't see myself being addicted to it like how I was with Ragnarok Online (read: grinding for 8 hours straight), but I can see myself logging in at least once a day here or come back when I need a break from other games (or their communities).

...That doesn't seem to answer your question, does it? :<

  • I would second L-Bo's assessment. When I first started playing the game, it reminded me muchly of Little Big Planet in many ways.

  • Maybe one to add here is The West. It (unlike Travian) can be played part time. Only get involved as much as you want to. What's in there I don't call violence and people keep the chat clean.
This reminds me of Rune Scape. Specially the chicken. :)  I didn't play that for long. L5 here so far.

  • I think Lord Bacon-o sums it up nicely.

Games design spectrum ranges from "make your own fun" to "directed play".
Most of the criticism I read of glitch comes from those who get more enjoyment from games at the directed play end of the spectrum. I enjoy both, but really like the fact glitch makes no demands on my time (at least, with the way I play it).

  • The things that I most enjoy about glitch is there is much more benefit to helping then hurting. The leader boards are the only thing that is vaguely competitive, and even so there's no in-game advantage to being at the top.
The other thing (and for the love of all the giants please don't ever let this change) there is no tactical in-game advantage to spending your real money on it. I'm a subscriber, and I love the subscriber benefits and the fun of dressing up, sure, but the "micro-transaction" based gameplay that so many games are using now drives the will to play out of me. I hope to never, ever see glitch go down that road.
Also, the attention to artistic detail knocks me off my feet. I discover something new and beautiful every day. That's what I love in a game like this.

tl;dr: It's friendly, it's pretty, and giving my monies doesn't make me better than anyone.

  • Oh, please, Maplestory... I tried that thing for a month and tested all classes. Never will come back again.
-Douchy community mostly. Few gems in it and it is mostly "give and take".
-Grinding over and over and over again for HOURS in the same place.
-Either pew pew or slash slash, classes don't really feel that different, and everyone is a Dual Blade, bowman or Aran/Evan because of bad balancing. Dunno if that changed with the "cataclysm" patch that put 3 more "classes" in.
-Overpowered pay stuff. Even has dungeons that require you to pay, some sort of special challenges that give overly awesome stuff.
-Enemy spawn is mostly random, so many times an enemy will spawn in your face, hit you and make you lose an aggravating quantity of exp if you died from that sucker punch.

And I don't see the Farmville comparison, as even if you center yourself around gardening crops in your home that doesn't take much time and doesn't ask for your wallet continuously. Even Tiny Speck makes fun of Farmville, as the Bureaucratic Hall has a lizard playing in a pc a game that has an interface pretty similar to that game.

This game is more "akin" to Second Life, though Glitch is more a game than what SL offers as a "game" and it is far more extended in that way. What I mean is that this game basically lets you "make your own fun" with a set of tools. I really wish this game expands more, because though I am still entertained with it and enjoying its potential, I know its fun once I experiment with all skills that I am interested will gradually fall if I am not kept entertained somehow, if one day my inventive it is not good enough. I will keep bringing friends here too for both support and keeping that fun I am talking about, it is the least I can do.

  • My first impression of Glitch was that it was a bit like Harvest Moon + Little Big Planet + online community. I mean that in the most complimentary way!
