Existential Question: Coming Back After Rest?

95% of folks at level 8 and below play only one day--never come back. That's like 4 out of 5 people who enter the world (87% level 8 or below) play only on that day they enter.
-- Maybe there are 3-400 or so people who are actively playing. How do they play? What keeps them going?

Of course this is all skewed because of the limited times that the game is open, and the big gaps between, and personal availability. Some people can't get back on and lose interest. Seems normal. But how do MORE players engage better with the game? How do you take the excitement of playing up to level 8 in one gaming session and bring people back for more? And if the appeal is to get non-traditional gamers to participate (I know one), how do you sustain the interest and the revenue stream? Buying new shoes won't do it for me--but I could be an outlier.

(And I very likely will be back after the reset, because its very cool to see the anthropology of Glitch unfolding in realtime. Also, it's always good to have additional testers and I have had fun and want to payback a bit more.)

  • I will also be staying. It is kinda boring now because I am just getting achievements but after the reset it should be fun again. The devs will also be extending the gamaplay and adding more stuff so it should be better in Beta.

  • I'm still quite new so the prospect of the restart is different for me. I've learnt just enough to get by, without having too much to lose, although I'm quite attached to my cave :) It means I will be able to participate more in the street projects without feeling at such a disadvantage, have helped where I could but still haven't managed to donate those wretched plain metal ingots for the quest or found any new players to gift to for that matter.

Standing in line at the Hall of Bureaucracy - how is that going to work after the reset? There will be way more people waiting there than at a street project, I guess the devs have thought about that tho.

  • Well, once an object is built for Glitch, it's got to be a relatively easy matter to push it out into multiple locations in the world--I seem to remember that was sort of the whole point of using flash? So I bet that means there will be multiple Halls of Bureaucracy..maybe they will spawn like bank branches do in RL.

As for resets, this will be my third, and others have gone through more than that. So far, each reset let me experience changes and improvements in such a way that the game played in really new and different way, so they have all been very positive for me. But I do think it's got to be tough for an alpha player on any game--how on earth does one keep things fresh by the time the game releases?

That being said, if I compare my experience as an alpha player to being a brand new player in the finished version, I don't think I could opt for one over the other. I don't write code, so I can't really see myself ever doing anything with the API, so being able to offers suggestions and come up with ideas, even if none of them ever get used, is actually exactly as fun as playing the game...which is to say, a whole lot of fun (um, about 80% of the time, but nothing's perfect).

  • I understand your statement, Mac, because that's happened to me with every single game I've played in Alpha. It just gets more and more crowded and doesn't scale very well. And I can definitely sympathize that going back to level 1 minus the wide-eyed innocence at the start of the game can be jarring.

However, I believe Glitch will be different. There's enough new features coming in that will keep me interested in the game, and an excellent community to keep me involved. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I have faith in Tiny Speck, enough to believe they'll find a good solution to any situation. For example, Mac, since you're constantly bored and directionless in-game, a few more quests like the one involving the peat quest would work. That has replay value because you get to help the newbies out.

I will definitely still be playing this game when it comes out. I hope you will be as well Mac, but if not, good luck!

  • The only problem I can see is that we might end up getting quests at similar times. I remember the "give a noob something quest" there was a massive noob hunt.

  • I think the jaded-ness we have now will perhaps make the starting events more interesting. perhaps we'll notice things we didn't before. plus, remember, we'll fly through everything and pretty soon we'll be right back to where we are now.

  • I believe I can speak for the majority of players who just entered on this last trial. The FS'ers (130 that I know of) will be back as there is no other place for them to be. Many leveled to between 3-8 and can't wait to find out what is behind the next door (or on the next street rather).

  • I got to lvl 18 (almost 19) in the time ive been able to play so far. Lots has been added even since i started in Dec. I'm excited to try a new strategy in the skill-building process. When I first started the only info I had was the few questions i asked other players so it was quite hard to get a grasp on what skills would be useful to begin with and where i should set my priorities. Now that I have a better idea of what works with what, and can make more informed decisions. I feel I can race back to where I was far more efficiently now and I'm excited to give it a shot.
I'm also a little happy to see the high-levellers cut down to our level :-P
