Your Radiation, Transcended

Transcendental Radiation skills have not kept pace with the overpowered players in a post-Upgrade world. So, we’re overpowering transcendental radiation. This revamp makes the benefits from radiating scale with Energy Tank, introduces radiating costs, removes daily limits, and introduces a new skill, Transcendental Radiation III.

Details below. Enjoy!

Benefits
Up to now, the most one could receive from a transcendental radiation was 47 Energy and Mood, if the radiator had TR2 and all the related upgrades. A typical radiation gave 20-40 Energy and Mood to each recipient.

Now, as radiation benefits scale up according to the tank size of the receiver and the TR skill of the radiator, the rewards get significantly bigger. For example, if a Glitch with Energy Tank 1000 gets radiated to by a player with Transcendental Radiation II for 30 seconds, she would receive 150 Energy and 150 Mood.

Costs
However, it now costs the “radiator” Energy and Mood to radiate. The costs are a little less than double the benefits of the recipients (given the same Energy Tank and TR skill level). In the example above, if the radiator has TR2 skill and an Energy Tank of 1000, a 30-second radiation would cost him 270 Energy and Mood.

Therefore, radiation is “worth it” only when there are two or more other people around for to receive your vibes. Radiating in bigger groups is encouraged: assuming equal Energy Tanks, radiating to 2 players has little better than a “break even” net effect, and radiating to 3 or more players has an increasingly positive net effect. To offset the radiation costs, imagination rewards for the radiator have been increased accordingly.

Scaling with Tank Size
Note that the benefits and costs as a % of tank size get smaller as the tank gets bigger. For example, a 30-second radiation with TR2 to five players with tank sizes 400, 1000, 2000, 4000 and 8000 gives the recipients 72, 135, 180, 240 and 330 mood & energy, accordingly. As a % of tank size, the benefits are diminishing: 18%, 13.5%, 9%, 6% and 4.13%.

The same applies to costs: If the radiator in the above example has 2000 tank size, the radiation would cost him 346, or 17.28% of his tank size (346/2000). If the radiator’s tank size was 4000, it would cost him 11.52% (461/4000).

Cooldown and Daily Limit
The cooldown remains the same for everyone - 2 minutes. The Daily Limit has been done away with entirely, and the related upgrade that increased it (“Transcendental Radiation Daily Limit”) has been removed from the deck.

Transcendental Radiation III
Transcendental Radiation III is a new skill. It increases the duration of the radiation, the benefits to recipients; reduces the radiator’s costs and increases the iMG bonus.

Changes to Upgrades
• Removed upgrade Transcendental Daily Limit
• Increased the cost of upgrade Transcendental Highway to 5000 iMG (was 500 iMG) to reflect its increased benefits (“chance of imagination bonus while you radiate”). This does not affect the players who already have the upgrade.
• New upgrades Radiation Prolonger and Radiation Prolongest replace upgrades Transcendental Benefits I and Transcendental Benefits II. The “Prolonger upgrades” increase the radiation duration by 20% and 50% (the “Benefits” upgrades used to increase the recipients’ benefits)

Other changes
• Radiating now updates Energy and Mood metabolics at every 3-second “tick”
• Players can exit and re-enter the “influence radius” during radiation, in which case they get partial rewards
• Radiator may radiate with 0 Mood (and recipients will receive no Mood benefits), but radiation stops when the Radiator is close to reaching 0 Energy

  • Yay new skill!!

Is there an option to radiate smaller-ly and without the energy/mood cost?

  • This is great, but it would be nice if our amounts radiated were shown in local like they used to be. I have to ask around to see how high my radiation was!

  • I guess the biggest problem for me is that it now costs to radiate, meaning I'll be markedly less generous with the skill.

  • I love this change! Pretty good for after-Rook Attack radiation.

Note to self: Don't do this in Cebarkul...

  • Its interesting.   I'm not sure the benefits of this will be enough for me to want to add this skill and slow down the learning time for future skills.    Might be good for some real hard core players who are playing often enough to make use of it.

  • @ Mal'akh

If I get it right, then your costs don't depend on how many people recieve it, they only depend on how efficient the radiation was. So you could definitly do it in Cebarkul.

You got it right. Unfortunately nowadays a lot of people go to Cebarkul to croak. ^_~

  • Could something please be put on the Glitch twitter change log about the new skill and changes for those who miss this post.

Some people who have bookmarked the general forum page only get the top few results for each section and this was about middle of the General forum page by the time I logged on today. Thanks

  • Thanks for adding it Mart:)

@Rutger - You'll note the update was made to change log 2 hours ago and that I posted my request for the update over 3 hours ago as it wasn't on twitter or on the left hand side of forums at the time. I wouldn't have bothered the devs if it was already there.

Either way, it's there now and all is good.

    Reduces img bonus?

  • glassy, re 'it would be nice if our amounts radiated were shown in local like they used to be.'

I agree, but because every recipient can receive a different amount of energy & mood, and because there may be many recipients per radiation, the activity log would get messy. We'll keep evaluating if there's a need to show this, and what would be the best way to show it "smartly".

    XD: Thanks! Fixed.

Mikah: It takes pulling an engineer away from daily tasks (like developing a new feature!) to do a refund, so we try not to do them unless the "lost iMG" is huge and affects a lot of players. Thanks for understanding.

  • Perhaps just:

    SchWM radiated for 34 seconds.

Two benefits (easy, same for everyone). People will quickly get an idea of what 15 seconds vs. 30 seconds of radiation means for them personally, and everyone knows whom to thank (or curse), even if they miss the bubbles and what-not.

Plus, it's in line with what the current messages look like.

Maybe a range? Like "people received from x-y energy and mood from your radiation" or something. (I don't have the skill so I'm not sure if it would work but I imagine that would be a pretty simple way to do it.)

  • I just had a vision of Glitchy monks with minimal energy tanks walking barefoot through Ur, radiating to groups gathered in lovely places and accepting with thanks offerings of food, drink and other necessities.

Oh wait, maybe that was my screensaver.

  • Used to be someone in the Hendarchy stood atop that little protrusion in Cebarkul near the Tool Vendor and hit everyone with Random Kindness and Transcendental Radiation while wearing a Tibetan Buddhist Monk outfit. I keep forgetting who it was... It'll come back to me.

  • I went to Cebarkul to die, having carefully got my energy down, and a bunch of ppl were there radiating so nonstop that I picked up 2k energy before I could escape. I am not sure what the solution is when different people have different game play ideas that are incompatible within the same street.
Posted 70 days ago by Vocable Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yeah, no point going to Cebarkul to die at the moment

Hopefully the novelty will wear off soon

I have a big tank and picked up 10,000 energy before I had finished loading and could move away

Transcendental Radiation is not necessarily philanthropic

  • I'm not a fan of this change. It used to be fun to radiate, sort of a little free gift you could give other players at the minor expense of having a couple extra skills and a long cooldown for personal meditation. Now it's very expensive and pretty much requires reciprocity.
Posted 69 days ago by Lucille Ball Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Lucille yea, but the amount you get from focusing energy is different. To me, it offsets that a little bit. More equalized imho, compared to the smaller tanks with the big tanks.

I can't wait to upgrade this next, but I am not pausing jack in the final stretch, lol. xD

tiny p.s. Maybe alter RK as well? 10% even? Ionno, lol.. :/ Seems more reserved as a souvenir or for new players, in my, nowadays.

  • Shouldn't doing something nice increase your mood?  This nearly crushed mine.  I guess they were right:  "Evil will always defeat good, because good is dumb."

  • @Rennie - "Shouldn't doing something nice increase your mood? This nearly crushed mine."

Yeah, that's how I feel. I performed radiation for the first time (after the change) in a coop GoC, and watched as my life and soul were quickly drained from my glitch (before I thought to hit the panic button). I want to perk up my friends, but not at the cost of my life. Even though I'm still learning the skill... I can probably say "I wont radiate again"... But, then, I don't have the skill, so I don't fully know how it will work, yet?

And to note the players radiating in "the death zone" .. I just figured that's how they were trying drain their tanks (die). Because it works faster then cheese! ;)

  • Is it worth having TR3 as a skill? Nothing new is added; it seems to me the differences between 2 and 3 are tweaks and would be better served through upgrades cards.

  • Hi guys,

Apparently I introduced a bug into Transcendental Radiation the other day. Basically, it wasn't ending when it was supposed to. So, you may have noticed that yesterday you could radiate until you ran out of energy. And now you can't. (For reference, the maximum possible duration is supposed to be 18, 21, or 30 seconds depending on what level of the TR skill you have. Your actual duration is randomized, so it may be less than that.)

On the plus side, it's now possible to get iMG bonuses for not interrupting the radiation.

    My sincere apologies, everybody.

  • Ah, I thought something was fishy.  Glad it's fixed!

  • So, I realized yesterday (it was clear in the post but I had not read that part of it fully) that the change where it now requires your own energy and mood input to radiate applies across all skill levels. I thought I'd be able to get out of that by not learning the third skill (but now I will learn the third skill for those times I do radiate).

I will miss standing around on someone's home street talking to them and radiating just randomly as a little "hi I like you" thing.  I absolutely applaud efforts to get groups together doing things groupily but when the benefit to players on a less group basis goes down in exchange that doesn't seem very awesome.  I will also miss being able to do it after I've gotten out of hell and am pooped and bad mood and don't want to do anything else for the day but hang out.  Or being able to do it without having to worry about if there are enough people around and if they're going to radiate and if it will be worth it.

I was on a street with a group of people yesterday and someone radiated and said their mood had gone down a lot and said "that's what you get for being nice to people."  Was kind of a :-\ moment for me.  With the img received in exchange maybe it's worth it from a game-mechanics type of approach.  I probably don't understand enough of how it works to be complaining about the mechanics.  But it just seems kind of odd to me.

I definitely look forward to trying to radiate in larger groups and see how that goes. It will probably be pretty awesome.

  • I just finished learning the third skill this morning, so I tried it out.  My tank's max is 6540.  I lost 66 mood and 66 energy every three seconds, and went from nearly-full mood to something like 88%.  I repaired tools in order to get fix my mood loss, so I ended up with about half of my energy gone.  A friend used some RKs on me, too.  Then I went looking for the upgrade cards to minimize the damage, and then realized that they just make the radiation last longer, and don't actually cut mood and energy loss at all.

Long story short: I didn't use TR much to begin with, but now I can safely say that I'll never use it again.  It feels as if I'm being punished for trying to help others.  If that was the intention, fine, but otherwise, this needs to be tweaked.
