I AM BEAUTIFUL. You are a spammer.

Someone is going around dropping notes promoting a website called 0peration beautifu1 (I changed the spelling because I don't want to reward their behavior). I hope the devs crack down on this sort of thing, because it would be intolerable if it became a regular thing. Notes don't disappear, and our characters would be wading through a mountain of waste.

  • While I agree I bump into them too often the overall goal seems genuine to me I don't think it was so much spamming as not realizing letters tend to get around so even a small handful would likely get seen by many. That being said its a very open world and people will leave notes regardless I could easily just copy the note or any other and effectively "spam" it myself. With all the random notes that get tossed around bumping into the same one a few times should not be any issue considering the number of inane ones i have bumped into and funny ones its barely an issue.

IMHO let it go its game and its not offensive. The option always existed to simply not read the note and move along.

  • I don't think it was spamming, but to each their own. The note made me smile. As a side note, I believe unwanted notes can be donated to a shrine. ^^

  • I think notes can also be sold to street spirits.

  • Hahaha, get the stick with the point end tool and pick up papers that way
    then donate them.

  • If you have a problem such as this why don't you just report it. If the staff feels it's inappropriate they will remove it. In this manner, I feel the person is being called out and they had good intentions.

  • also, I could be wrong ( as I have never left a note) but I am pretty sure notes do infact disappear.
Posted 14 months ago by Sperkle Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think notes only last for a certain amount of reads. Also, like other people said, you can pick them up and donate them if it bothers you so much.

And OP, if you didn't want to reward their behavior by mentioning the site, why even mention it at all? XD

But I did think the notes were spam, since there seemed to be one in every block in Shak Shales and the surrounding streets. It didn't really bother me enough to want them gone, but it had a spammy feel. (If that makes sense...)

The sentiment was nice, but the execution could have been better.

  • AFAIK, notes do not disappear (at least I've missed any dev statement of the sort). They get picked up, donated, sold, moved, but don't disappear from the world on their own, just as nothing else does.

  • Notes and paper cups do disappear. There is a maximum number of reads.

  • Yah, letters do disappear, I've witnessed one vanish before my eyes. I was upset because I was about to read it:(

  • I'm not sure what the intent of the original note writer was, but it sounds like the writer may have been inspired by a guerilla art project called You Are Beautiful.

    you-are-beautiful.com/INSTA...

In the original art project, they left the phrase "You Are Beautiful" in unexpected places in the urban environment, and encouraged others to do the same. The idea spread for a while, and there are Flickr streams dedicated to the project, etc.

I always liked that project, and it feels (to me) entirely appropriate that someone would want to bring it into the world of Glitch.

Did the original writer include a URL or something? Is that the problem?

  • Ok. I just checked out operation beautiful, and it seems like a less arty knockoff of You Are Beautiful, but it still seems harmless to me.

  • A note will give you 1XP at your nearest shrine.  consider these quoins.

  • I think the intention was lovely, a really positive thing to do.  Both the You Are Beautiful and Operation Beautiful projects seem like the sort of thing that would fit nicely with the Glitch ideology.   It's a shame that the person has been called out in a negative way.

  • Why are there so many posts asking the Devs to become a police-force with other gamers?  Can't some of you just grow up and deal with this stuff that, in the big scheme of things, is really not a problem to begin with?

Watching the forums is becoming more interesting to me than playing the actual game is.  It's amazing to see some of the behaviors that have been emerging.  I'm stunned at the things that people feel they must make a big deal about.

Always looking for something to gripe about...always looking to get other people in trouble...always making a big whoop for no good reason...

  • I agree with Poppy.  Don't expect a response from staff anytime soon on this.  Glitch is a social experiment.  Deal with in-game community issues, in-game.  Personally, I don't see anything wrong with it.  You have a choice of whether to read the note and then visit the site, or just ignore it.  You are also free to pick up the note and trash it if you want.  You have tools available to deal with it however you wish.  There's no need for staff to intercede.

  • Reporting abuse while playing the game is simple: above the chat window is a menu with your name and picture on it.  Choose the "Report abuse" link, and you'll get a simple interface.  Staff reads and responds to reports quickly.

Personally, when I find notes around, and deem them to be worthy of disposal, I sell them to vendors or drop them into shrines.

  • The person who left the note was the first reply. I think we forget how harmful our words can be. If you look at the latest post on her blog (http://maniyani.tumblr.com/post/11607388027/shaking):

"I’m shaking my heart is pounding and i want to cry I didnt mean any harm I was just trying to do what people have done in real life why did I de lurk why do i even bother being social"

    And then her twitter:
MandaManiYani Seriously I'm about to cry I finally reach out to do something nice and ... something social, for once. I lurk. I have anxiety. Reinforced.7 hours ago
MandaManiYani Now I am shamed as a spammer. Great... my heart hurts. I feel sick.

She meant well. A kind, peaceable word is better. Look at the effect the harsh words have had on this girl. We should be kind to one another.

  • To me, this can go to extremes both ways. On the one hand some notes may be annoying, but we have methods of dealing with that, as folks have pointed out. We got a throwdown note from another block in our quarter, so I donated it and left a note taunting the other block. Fun!

On the other, some notes are useful or funny or lovely, and I think it's sad I might miss out on some because another group has made it their mission to remove all notes regardless of what they contain.

Maybe we need more communal bulletin boards...

  • I remember how friendly everyone was the first few days Glitch opened, and thought to myself, "This is awesome!  What a wonderful game this will be."  And then Ur went to @#$% with an influx of insensitive, selfish people.  The important lesson I learned was that Glitch will never be a perfect little world.  It will mirror life itself.  And that means a fair amount of douchebaggery will always linger.

  • I came across one of the notes earlier today whilst digging peat and scraping barnacles. It brought a smile to my face to be reminded that we are ALL beautiful. I even mentioned it in global chat because it was such an unexpected yet charming surprise.

At no point reading the note did I get the impression it was to promote a website, rather it was to promote an ideology which had been inspired by a website art project. I've seen lots of things like this in Glitch and I think the creativity of it is very in keeping with the game. I'd actually like to see more fun little projects like this littering our streets.

  • There ARE bboards in the apartment blocks
Posted 14 months ago by Kiss My Face Subscriber! | Permalink
  • After seeing the noticeboards in apartment towers, I made a suggestion that we should get those in housing quarters as well.  It would certainly help keep litter off the streets while still allowing for information to be disseminated.

  • Aw, I never saw one of the notes, but I bet it would have made me smile.

Everyone plays this game differently, and personally, I love to find little notes hidden here and there. I love when friends leave notes at the feet of their sleeping/AFK friends, and when they leave them at their friends' front doors, or whatever.

  • Kiss My Face: But only in the apartment blocks and machine rooms right now. Hopefully other places someday.

It sounds like it was a lovely thing to leave about, and I would entreat the person that left them to not let this negative reaction stop them from reaching out and continuing to do similar things.

I encourage people to judge more slowly before posting negative, public feedback. Constructive criticism worded in the nicest way possible? Sure. But there's no need to put an action on blast when it may be legitimate goodwill.

If you really think it's a reportable action... then just report it, don't post about it. There's no need to post about such things when you can easily report it and go on your way.

ETA: Here's a nice video about the power in the words we use, and how a simple change in the way we present our words can have a more positive effect: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hzg...

  • Kiss my face: i was thinking more along the lines of communal boards outside of apts and machine rooms--like in well-travelled streets such as Gregarious Grange, in community gardens, etc., so people can post announcements (e.g., about market days or parties) or poetry or "you are beautiful" and what-have-you. Somewhere that doesn't require us to enter an apt block to read.

  • How silly... Someone doesn't like the notes, but chose to keep reading them?  And then complains... when it would have been alot easier to ignore them?  lol
Posted 14 months ago by Iconoclast Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I feel bad for the girl who was leaving these notes after seeing what Neatly Sliced posted about her reaction.
Don't feel bad, Mani Redlyn...you didn't do anything wrong.  As far as I'm concerned, you have been somewhat bullied by the OP.

And then here's another group emerging...the note police.  Don't throw every note away no matter what it says, some of us would like to read those.  That's selfish.

This is why I'm so anti-social.  People make me crazy.
I'm not perfect...but come on people, pull it together.

  • Can we resolve to not use the forums as a place to publicly shame others?

If someone's behavior is bothering you in-game, please report it and move on. Reporting is private, it's handled discreetly, and if the issue is legitimate, the right people (TS folks, who are far more objective than the people involved) mediate and take care of it. If it's not legitimate, no harm no foul.

Stuff like this just reflects poorly on everyone involved.

  • If you have a problem with a specific player, submit an abuse report. Please do not post a pointed reaction towards the actions of an individual in the forums. We will see an abuse report sooner and will be more able to make a timely response. If you take a look at the Community Guidelines, it's clear that this kind of thread is not appropriate (and this will be echoed in the upcoming Forum Guidelines):

"Vigilante action against players who are, in your opinion, playing “incorrectly” can be griefing too and it is not allowed. If you see abuse in the game, you should report it. But calling out another player in the forums or public channels and organizing people to bully them is itself a kind of harassment and will be moderated as such."

  • I agree wholeheartedly with Poppy!
It's very selfish to throw away notes when you find them just because -you- don't like them, reading notes people have left behind is one of my favourite things to do in Glitch, and I'm sure there are plenty who feel likewise.

And I didn't come across any of Mani Redlyn's notes, but I sure would have liked to! They sound lovely.

So stop policing what people can and can't do in this game. Leaving notes doesn't hurt anyone, but bullying people because of it does.
