Delirious friendship non-achievement

So I noticed that you can select the LAST page of the achievements leaderboard, and see how many players are actually out there (57755, at the moment). Then I thought of my habit of compulsively adding everyone I meet as a friend (and who knows how many I have now). And eventually... the realization hit me!

I. Could. Befriend. Each. One. From. There.

Or almost. In fact, you could click on each leaderboard entry, go on their profile page and click the "add as a friend" button. 57755 times. How much of an achievement does it sound to you?

(Seriously, I won't do that. But it's the sort of deranged achievement one would expect from the people who invented some of the badges out there...)

  • Achievements that encourage spam are bad because, no matter how crazy, if you award an achievement for something, somebody will do it.

  • Er... Yes, I guess you are right.

I did underestimate the weirdness of fellow Glitchians.

Sorry! Nothing to see here, really!

  • People like me, who think it is utterly rude to just friend people at random, would make it impossible for anyone to complete that badge. The easy ay to remove yourself from someone else's friend list is to block them momentarily and then unblock them. There are more of us who do this constantly than you think.

  • I don't think it's rude to randomly add someone, but if you know where the relationship is headed, then I'd block and unblock.

  • Rude?  That's farting in a packed elevator.  I could see friending random people as odd, but I don't think there is an impropriety in their doing so.  Nor is there anything wrong with you momentarily blocking them to clear yourself from their list.  But this hyper sensitivity and thin skinned offense at perceived slights must stop!

  • There are a ton of people with 0 achievements, so there are definitely more than 57755 players if you're thinking of total accounts :)

  • Hmm... two thoughts:

@TomC - 0 achievements would mean opening an account and never logging in again, as you get your first ones for time spent in-game and (2 or 5? I don't remember) locations visited.

About "rudeness" - I can't really see how can it be rude to add the people I meet around. I do it just because I like to see how many Glitches I was fortunate enough to meet during my adventures, and they can just ignore me as usual.
Maybe were you thinking "rude" to chat to people without having been properly introduced during a debutante's ball? I don't do that either, usually. But you might be aware that there exist a series of achievement specifically triggered by chatting people up, so you are bound - sooner or later - to be deadly offended by all those vulgar talky people... ;)

  • Farting in a packed elevator is not rude. Spontaneous combustion caused from holding a fart in a packed elevator: rude.
Also, if it weren't for random friending, I'd have no friends at all so keep those random requests coming, folks ;)

  • I guess in a packed elevator is less rude because everyone is a suspect!  But when you are with just a couple of other people, everyone knows who did the deed.
Now regarding spontaneous combustion, I'd be scooping that person up and putting them in a bucket.  Then I'd put a medal around that bucket and salute a true hero, who made a conscientious commitment to the olfactory well being of the folks around them.  And while their plan to not backfire backfired, I can't really hold them responsible for a freak accident.

  • No, I knew what I meant by rude. Perhaps it is based on years of watching what many term "friend whoring" on different social networks and what not, but I don't want to be a number on your friend list if I don't know you. Period. Chatting someone for the chat badge, being just a one liner, is not as big a deal in my book. I don't mind that. Adding me for your numbers {even for the badges} is rude unless asked. While I may be the only focal forum goer to state this, I am far from the only Glitch to think this way. But this is all off topic.

  • Listen Emily Post, I've hijacked this thread and I'm not giving the keys back until we get to the safe house (my half hearted apology, Ayzad)!  I'd agree to disagree, but I'd rather just disagree fiercely.  Rabidly.  Oh man, I'm driving too fast.  I'm going to pull over to this rest stop, but I swear, if you try any funny business... so help me...
Look, I'm not trying to tell you how you want your virtual self to be perceived.  I just can't see the rudeness in a random friending.  Nor can I see it in splanking or any other such thing that sends people into irrational tizzies.  And even if you had an army of vocal supporters, I would think you all overly sensitive over something so petty.

  • I random friend all the time! I promise I won't be offended if you block/unblock (or just block, for that matter) me if I happen to do it to you, though. No skin off my rear end.

  • When I was a baby glitch I appreciated it when someone randomed friended me. I am shy and it made me feel welcomed to the wonderful, wacky world of glitch. I learned about IMs, party chat, groups and that I didn't have to accept every offer of friendship. I don't find the offering of friendship rude at all. In the year and a half I've been playing, I've accepted all but 2 offers of friendship, have removed only 1 and haven't had the need to block anyone.

  • *friends the friendlies* Hiya Ayzad :)

In most social networks I tend to decline friend requests for the reasons stated here - I want to actually be friends with the people who are listed as a "friend". But here in Glitch, things are so off the wall, random, and wonderfully whimsical, that I've actually started accepting random friend requests and sending some of my own haha.

I don't think it's rude to randomly friend, and I don't think it's rude to decline the invitation. I don't think being overly friendly is rude, and I don't think being reticent, shy, introverted, non-social, or whatever is rude either. You can not want or like something without it being 'rude', which seems like such a strong word in this instance, to me.

  • Hey... The profile page was fixed to show >1000 friends...

Just out of curiosity, how many do you have listed now? (2200, thanks)

  • I randomly friend people all the time - I had no idea someone would consider it rude. I agree with not doing that on Facebook or MySpace, etc., but like Sunshine Tentacles said, I think of Glitch differently. I guess I will cease my random friendliness out of consideration. :(
