Player Blocking -- currently a bit backwards in-game.

When you enter a street in game, you get an announcement of who all is on the street. If someone enters a street you are on, you also get an announcement. If you block a player, you do not see if they are on or have entered the street. However, they see that information about you.

To make this clearer and remove the blocker/blocked/blockee confusion, I'm going to use Kermit & Miss Piggy.

Kermit has blocked Miss Piggy after her numerous and annoying advances. He just does not want to deal with her anymore. He's out and about in Ur when he turns down Groddle Forrest Junction. Now, by chance, Miss Piggy is there collecting her coins when she gets the announcment that Kermit has entered the street. Kermit has no warning that she's there, so while he's walking down the street, she's surrounding herself with tempting meat and flowers and getting her bear ready to smother him with kisses. By the time Kermit gets down the street - it's too late, but if he'd gotten a warning, he could have easily and happily gone down another street. Which he does as soon as he sees her.  Miss Piggy, of course, runs after him. When she gets there, she gets an announcement telling her that Kermit is there, but Kermit does not get a similar announcement telling him that Miss Piggy has entered. So he has no idea if it's safe to slow down to donate to Mab, milk a butterfly or, *gasp* nibble on another pig.

While stalking is an extreme example, if someone blocks another player, it's likely because they want to avoid them to a certain degree. Or, at least be warned that they may come in contact. It would be better, then, to have the announcements remain for the blocker (Kermit) and removed for the blockee (Miss Piggy). It might also be nice to have the location info removed from the blocker's (Kermit's) profile page if viewed by the blocked player (Miss Piggy).

  • Sorry vera, but in my opinion I think you can just ignore the player, Im not a big fan of blocking someone, I can get away with just ignoring them if they are anoying or something...

Blocking means you are responding with something negative to a specific player, and they easily know when that happens, and probably get even more angry or more offended by it, so in my opinion, adding even more stuff to blocking, its not a good thing for the game, because nothing good comes from it. Ignoring is much more powerfull and effective in my own opinion again and with respect for the other ones ;)

  • I don't fully disagree with you arizoo (and absolutely no need to be sorry :)). Ignoring is powerful and often more powerful than blocking. However, there are times when blocking is better because it makes it so that you don't have to deal with it -- especially if it's repetitive behavior and/or if it's just chat. (in fact, in many chat systems blocking is called "ignore")

But right now, the game has it set up so that you can block someone, but then have no way to know that you are about to stumble into a potential problem - so you can't practice easy avoidance. An announcement, in and of itself, isn't harassment, so I don't see why it's removed when you block a player. I am equally favorable to just having the announcement returned to the blocker as I am to having them switched. So, for example, I blocked you, now you can't harass me and/or fill my bags with crap, but we can both continue to see that the other has entered (or is on) the street. This would let me practice avoidance, if I so chose - choosing a different route or whatever.

  • oh, I misread it then,  you want to take out functionality instead of adding more.
    +1 then hehe ;)

Also +1 to just a ignore button, instead of block.

  • It's not really much of an issue.  Miss Piggy can't interact at all with Kermit even if they are on the same street.  She can't kiss, splank, or even talk to him.  If Kermit is going to have a heart attack if Miss Piggy shows up on a street, perhaps he needs to find another game.

  • It's not much of an issue - but when you have a player who you've blocked following you through streets and mimicking your actions, it'd be nice to know that they are no longer following you and/or that they're on a street you just entered so you can go another route to avoid the situation from happening. And, yes, this happens. Is it a huge deal? No. But, it would be nice to have the warning and, possibly, to have the announcements switched so you get the warning and they don't get the notice.

  • yes, i may don't want to know what Miss Piggy says, but i would like to know if she's there. not a big issue, but just in case:)

  • and can we please get a sixth sense so we can preblock certain people?

  • maybe block in both directions?  If I block someone because they are a pain in the arse and do stupid things to grief chat channels - like, say...  entering and leaving the same street over and over again, i probably don't want to see that in my chat window.

  • When we first changed blocking, the intent was to prevent the players you'd blocked from seeing messages in Local Chat about your arrivals and departures. This may have been acting a bit screwy lately, but we've freshened it up and it should work just that way now.
