Making money from grain not hooch...I've only just realised...*yes I'm thick!!!*

I've been storing up hooch to sell to the vendor and then outside just now my mind wandered to glitch and grain and I realised I putting in 500 grain to get 35 hooches.  The math...

Sell 500 grain to vendor get 500c
Sell 35 hooch to vendor at 12c each get 370c

I hope I haven't got the math wrong (probably have..) but from now on I'll only be making hooch to make drinks, the rest of my grain will be sold!!

  • I  checked the math, based on your 12c per hooch formula and  I get 420c for 35 hooches.

    I could be wrong too!

But, either way, it does seem like a better price for selling grain than hooch.

I use my hooch for making potions and such but I do sell extras to the vendor!!

I'm pretty sure I noticed a similar thing when selling grain vs bales of grain, but now I forget.

I have a feeling I'll still just keep making hooch at full power/output regardless because I think it is fun.  Silly me!

  • I knew I'd get the maths wrong....lololol - I do like making hooch, quite often use corn too but haven't checked to see if that's more cost effective! Will research tomorrow :D

  • Mhm, a stack of grain sells for 250c (1c per grain, the vendor can't take his usual cut of it), whereas a bale of grain sells for only 200 (in my experience).

  • I never sell as a bundle because of that : )

  • Finally making a load of blocks from all the peat and loam I have lying around my garden! That should boost the finances too!

  • 14 grain = 1 hooch, 2 currants lost.

Potatoes are 7 currants and take 7 units.

  • It depends which vendor you sell it too.

  • This was pointed out not too long after distilling came in.   You only really need to make hooch for personal consumption - tinctures or drinks.   For occasional use it's dead cheap to buy.  As a money maker?  Ummmm.  no.   Harvest beans and bubbles for auction, there's your money maker.

  • I've been using hootch to donate.  I've never looked into the tradeoffs.  Maybe I'd be better off donating the potatoes.  I assumed since there was added value (my work in filling the stills) that the hootch was the better donation. I shall have to check on that.

  • I think that potatoes are not a loss, but not a gain.  I'm not quite sure though.

  • If you're going for currants, potatoes are a wash.  You can sell two potatoes to a tool vendor for 12c, or you can use those potatoes to make 1 hooch and sell that for 12c.

If you're going for favor, I believe hooch gives a slight gain of 1.5 favor vs. 1.4 from two potatoes. This would also be true for grain.

  • Thanks for your analysis Splendora.  So hootch has a slight advantage over potatoes for donating.  But, I'm trying to streamline my donating  to speed up my levellng before the new game comes.  I've been moving to donating raw materials to save my time.  For example, I use to make stews and gruels.  I finally concluded what others have been saying, that it's more effective to donate meats.  I may just donate the potatoes.  That would save the step and time of accumulating enough hootch to donate and then also having the trouble of packing them up to take to the shrine.

I've had the fun doing the gathering   and making, now I want to get to other fun stuff like growing herbs

Thanks also to Casarat for this thread.

  • Well, I did some  analysis.  With EHSP, I hootch = 4.50 favor, and 1 potato = 2.34 favor.  So I guess I'll stay with distilling hootch for donating.

  • No, Peachesan. 1 potato with EHSP = 2.1 favor. 2 potatos (needed to make 1 hootch) = 4.2 favor.

It's pretty simple to calculate: 1 currant of street price is equal to 0.1 favor. EHSP triples it.

    So, 1 hootch (15 c) with EHSP = 15 * 0.1 * 3 = 4.5 favor. And 2 popatos (7 c each) with EHSP = 2 * 7 * 0.1 * 3 = 4.2 favor.

  • It doesn't matter what ingredient you use to produce hootch. It always costs 14 currants (1.4 favor) and hootch is 15 currants (1.5 favor). 1 currant profit every 3 minutes. Compare to one nibbling gives you up to 160 currants, just in 1 click!

  • Actually Ulysses it's up to 240 currants in just one click :) Or 192c if you're going by price from selling to tool vendor ;) The four meat you usually get is added onto the super harvest!

  • I appreciate all your input but I still can't get it.  Can someone help me out?  I want to know which is most efficient to donate with EHSP.  1 potato or 1 hootch or 1 meat.

Another question I have is:  I have feeders and collectors for meat.  Is there still an advantage to nibbling pigs?

Thanks in advance for all your help.  Cheers.

  • Hooch is needed for essences.

  • @Peachesan - The problem with asking what's most "efficient" is that efficiency can mean different things.

It doesn't make sense to ask how much favor you get from donating 1 potato or 1 hooch or 1 meat with EHSP because there will be rounding, and also because this would be hugely inefficient.  You want to donate large amounts when you use EHSP.  So it is better to ask about large quantities.

If you donate 100 potatoes with EHSP, you will get 210 favor.  If you donate 100 meats with EHSP, you will get 300 favor. If you donate 100 hooch with EHSP you get 450 favor.

So now you have to consider the relative costs of getting 100 potatoes vs. 100 meats vs. 100 hooch.  And that will depend on things like your skill levels, your house-based resources, your expertise with the game, what value you place on your time, etc.  This will be different for each player. Same goes for nibbling pigs.

There is probably an advantage to nibbling pigs for most players. However, someone who can come online only for short periods, but can do that several times during each day, will probably find it most efficient to use that time simply to fill feeders, empty collectors, and then sell or donate meat.

As in real life, the answer to questions about efficiency in this game often is "It depends."

  • Hi Splendora.  Thanks for that very informative and helpful answer.  I am level 54 and want to reach 60 by the end of February.  I have a 50k house, 27 piggies, 14 butterflies, 6 meat collectors, 2 feeders ( I deposit grains), 3 milkers, and 3 stills (I deposit 70 potatoes at a time)

I mine, and  make chambers to donate.  I also make earthshakers and humbabas to save energy.  I've recently started going to AL. I grow a few herbs in a friend's garden.  I squeeze chickens to feed pigs and get music blocks.  I stack 4's and 5's until I get enough to donate.
I'd like to hear more about how you play the game and any advice you can give me on leveling.  Cheers
