Realtime glitch lottery site, beta testers wanted!

Hi glitches,

The first realtime lottery of Glitch will be launched soon!

But before that we need to make sure the website works perfectly so we are looking for some beta testers. :)

The work is simple, just visit our app and authenticate yourself, then you will be given some free credits to play tho no prizes will be given out this time.

All beta testers who helped will receive 1,000 currants credits to play upon our launch!

Please post here if you are interested, I will post the URL here later!

Thanks for helping!

Regards,

Utopia

[edit] oops...didn't see that you had sent an ingame mail out.  I would happily enter any future tests if you are still doing them.  [/edit]

Posted 12 months ago by Utopia Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I copied/pasted the link from the in-game mail and didn't get any credits to play around with.

  • Hi Utopia - how do you plan to provide transparency to the drawing itself? In other words, how will folks independently verify the results were actually random (everyone got an equal chance)?

[And I'm happy to help, not just asking the question]

  • Ah, I pasted again after authenticating and it worked.

  • "This subdomain inherits the reputation of no-ip.biz"

You're using a bad host, Utopia
Posted 12 months ago by Boom and Bust Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Boom and Bust no-ip isn't a host, it is just one of the most famous free sub-domain provider on the Internet. It has nothing to do with the contents of our app, hope you will understand.

In fact I can just make a few clicks to change the domain name from .biz to .org, then the so called "rating" can change to "Good" instantly, look:

    http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/glitch.no-ip.org

But why bother doing it since it is pointless? If you check our app with trend micro it tells you our app is "Safe"

  • Sturminator IX thanks for raising an important point that I almost forgot!

When each lottery starts, 40 numbers and a 5 character long text are randomly drawn and will be used to form a line similar to the following:

    21,7,4,98,54,1...some more numbers...85,32,29,68,39,T8EK2

The app then displays a verify code of that lottery which is a md5 encoded text of the line above, for example the verify code of this round is:

    0d9d2368a003c8a553e501cc71e1952b

After the last ticket is sold the winners are determined according to the 40 numbers drawn originally, like when the last ticket sold is #7, then the winners will be 28,14,11,5,61,8... etc.

But how do you verify? After the winners are decided, the originally drawn numbers and the 5 character long text will be posted on the app, now anyone of you can use any md5 tool available on the internet to verify if the verify code matches the original drawn numbers so that I have no way to cheat.

  • There's a bit of a problem with your randomness.

As I understand it, there's a secret draw of random numbers which is then added to the last two digits of an auction ID.

Auction IDs aren't random. I posted two auctions very close together:
    www.glitch.com/auctions/PUV...
    www.glitch.com/auctions/PUV...
We can see that the ID numbers appear to be increasing; I'm guessing 3 other auctions were placed in the ~30  seconds between these posts. It would be possible for you to rig the numbers.

This is combined with the fact that there's no independent verification of the 40 numbers that are enclosed in the auction posting.

A better solution would be to use random.org's sequence generator for the day AFTER you close the draw, found at www.random.org/sequences/?m... <obviously, you'll have to change the date>

(It might work well if you had a lottery on a regular timescale; say, weekly; since people would know what day you'd be using.)

  • Oh, and I forgot to say: I couldn't copy/paste the "get cash" URL: I had to write it in manually. Could you make that URL shorter?

Oh, and whilst I'm pointing out theoretical shortcomings of the way you're doing things, I don't believe you're planning on cheating!
Posted 12 months ago by Thaniel Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Hi Thaniel thanks for your reply.

Firstly, the 40 random numbers CAN be verified as the MD5 digest of them will be posted throughout all time. You may challenge that those 40 numbers are rigged, but I don't get any benefits from rigging those numbers - if they are scattered around the board it can give no clue to the winning numbers; if they are all packed together you will know im rigging them.

Second, the auction IDs aren't random. Yes they are sequential, to be more precise it is the TIME when it is posted correct to nearest second (i.e. a unix timestamp). But since the auction will be posted immediately and automatically right after the last ticket is sold while I cannot control when the last ticket will be sold I don't think its easy to rig.

Next, thank you for suggesting random.org. In fact I have looked into it and found it not quite suitable for our app. The reason is that there maybe more than one lottery closed everyday and we need to release the results immediately upon the last ticket is sold.

Finally, I do think you can highlight and then copy and paste the URL. A player reflected that he couldn't copy but after restarting the browser he could, maybe its the problem of your browser? I have made the code CAPS only so I will be easier to type even you have to do so, hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Utopia
