New key system to share your home with friends

Remember how much you loooonged to have roommates in all those hard-earned homes, cottages, and tree houses? You had friends you wanted to be able to drop by whenever they felt like it (whether they were online or not), loved ones to share all of your possessions with, and appointed caretakers to feed and pamper your piggies while you were away.

Well now, we've made all that possible. To share your home with others, all you need is to give 'em a key. It's pretty darn simple. You now have a keyring icon that lives to the left of your inventory. This is where alll of the magic happens: the keyring menu that will let you share a key with a friend (if you have a house) and view keys others have shared with you.

Anyone with a key to your house can (1) enter it at any time, and (2) have access to everything in your house (cabinets, gardens, etc), with the exception of icons.

To make the pilgrimage to a friends home you have a key to, you'll have the option of either setting it as a destination or teleporting right over.

So try it out! Put down the proverbial welcome mat and let someone in.

  • This is fantastic! Love it! I'm getting ready to head out for a week and now I don't have to worry about my piggies! Woot!

But - did it break the "knocking on a door" behavior or is that a featured change?

Before giving out keys, I wanted to grasp what all could be done by a keyholder & one of those was letting folks in. Someone gave me a key to her house and left. A friend came over and knocked on the door. Neither of us got the knock on the door alert. When she came back inside, the friend knocked again and, this time, she got the alert (I did not). Is this expected behavior?

I kinda like that keyholders can't let others in (ie I trust them to feed my piggies, but might not want them throwing a bash at my place with a bunch of folks I don't know), but I was quite accustomed to flying home if I got a visitor -- that could take a bit of getting used to :)

  • Vera Strange, there is something funky going on with knocking behavior, and we're working on fixing that right now.

  • I sense a lot of people getting screwed over by people "claiming" to be friends
Someone is going to end up getting something stolen, and feelings hurt, and TS won't be able to do anything about.

Good idea with both a good and bad aftermath.

  • Thank you God (and right hand angels). We were just talking about the idea in global before YOU came and spoke unto the flock  Although I missed the announcement personally and didn't realize until I returned and people were talking in global about keyring...I finally understood with the help of another player...doh). wow, either that was quick response or it's an old idea. both are fine by me.

  • I was butterfly hatchin' and chasin' on my street when I accidentally clicked on a neighbor's door. Now I am in "moving to that location" limbo. (Bug report already filed, I just wanted to add to the note that knocking is a bit broken at the moment.)

  • Finally! You guys ROCK MY UR!

    @Volkov
We have been requesting this for the longest of times. Of course there might be some bad apples out there, but you have the option of returning the key to your keyring at any time and of course you don't just give out your keys to anyone.

  • WOOO Yes yes yes this is AWESOME!  *^_^*  Thank you so much!  As soon as the icon appeared for me I made a key for my bestie. <3 <3 <3

  • @Mal'akh.
Even the bestest of friends can be tempted by greed.
Even though it takes one second to remove a key, it'll take days before getting your high priced stuff back.

  • My favourite part of this may be the fact that it effectively frees up a TP spot, given that you can access a link to TP to your home through the keychain.  Sweet!

  • People just need to be careful about who they give keys too. Right now? Only person getting one to my place is my hubby. :D

  • If you give a key to someone, can you revoke it?
Posted 13 months ago by Popcorn☺ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yea, I think that there should be an option as to whether that friend has access to the cabinet or not. :)  I'm sure such improvements will be coming eventually. I'm just glad it's in the game now!

ETA: Yes, there's a Revoke option on the keys you've given out.

  • Hmmm, I was hoping I could use the keyring for all the other keys I've collected. :-( I don't have any reason to let others into my house, so now I have a large unused icon in a very prominent spot. Sorry, not a fan of this new feature. :-|

  • To anyone wondering, if you give someone a key, they have access to everything.
Icons, emblems, pickle, musicblocks, and gems.
    Beware.

  • Think this is a great addition.  Of course, people need to be very careful who they pass out keys to; however, those of us that have TRUSTED friends, are very grateful for this feature...it's been a long time coming, and understand there are potential negative ramifications if you give the key to the wrong person...but I hope the benefits outweigh the negatives...thanks for listening and implementing it finally!!

  • I love this feature. And not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but it would be really cool to have a 2nd type of key that just lets folks in but does not allow them to access my stuff (or some of my stuff).
Posted 13 months ago by scottj Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Seriously you wouldn't give a key to someone you don't know or trust 100%. Same in real life..If your friend /neighbour/family member that you trust is looking after your home while you go on holiday, you give them a key..you wouldn't be trying to lock everything to the floor before you left..LOL !!

  • Not only has God answered my prayers, I'm now reenergized about the game! This is such a sweet feature. It's nice to see a feature that was suggested by users being incorporated into the game - and so quickly! Wow! I am so happy with this!

Of course, now I have to be more careful about when I play with my pickle. *wink, wink*

  • Truly awesomesauce, Tiny Specks!

I find it very promising - and refreshing - that the dialogue between the Tiny Speck staff and Glitchen players is characterized by a serious consideration of our suggestions and concerns as players. It is always a wonderful surprise to discover the way in which you will respond to the more reasonable of our requests.

The chance to share houses via keys is a great addition to the game. Our Occupy Bureaucratic Hall movement will be very happy indeed to know that we've won ourselves a new right in our friendly contestation of the bureaucrocs' administrative labyrinth!

    Cheers, and many thanks!

    Good to know :)

  • This is excellent! I will most likely only exchange keys with my boyfriend, but it will be very helpful, as we don't live together and aren't always on at the same time. If I want to give him things, I can just go to his place instead of mailing things one item at a time. Sweet!
