Why? (Musings on Home Street Gardens)

Ok, I admit that some of this is my own fault.  I am a Mouse person, the Keyboard scares me.  I am trying to visit all of my Friends.  This, of course, results in many diversions off the path.  I actually like tending the Gardens of other Glitchen (not my own so much).  My Visiting Bag now is stocked with seeds, both Crop and Herb.  There are a few catches to this Friendly gardening though and I always wonder "Why?".

I have found that streets with Herb gardens often have animals.  Most of the animals are constrained by Sticks but some streets (like mine) have animals with Free Range.  Herb seeds are easy enough to get.  I Harvest and Shuck and replant.  The trouble comes in when the Free Range animals get in the way.  I end up petting and harvesting animals instead of Herbs or Crops.  Yes, I know if I'd only use the Keyboard it wouldn't be such a problem but I forget.  I also have this problem when gardens are fronted by all kinds of other things, feeders, collectors, piles of FREE stuff, etc.  Why?  Why do you place stuff where it blocks the gardens?  Why can't I learn to use the Keyboard?

Today I came to a Garden that had a couple of plots totally obscured by collectors and feeders.  I had to use the Keyboard but even then, I filled a feeder instead of watering a plot.

Now here's another "Why?".  Why do people with Crop gardens seem to have no pigs?  It's true.  I can't tell you the number of times I have harvested a Crop garden and then gone in search of pigs to feed so I could replant only to find none!  Most of these streets are so far along a diversion that I could never find my way back.  Once or twice I have known the owner and so befriended them just so I could come back and replant their Crop garden later (also, I do like them!).  If you have a Crop garden wouldn't it make sense to have a few pigs?  Maybe you could leave a sign telling us which Friend on your post has pigs.  Of course you could leave seeds but some Glichen would take the seeds and not plant your garden.

Oh well.  Lest you think I am ungrateful I will tell you here and now that I am very grateful.  I have enjoyed visiting many of you despite the lack of animals or the plethora of animal accessories on your streets.  I find that almost every street is more interesting and amusing than my own and the Home Street tours I take have all been rewarding in one way or another.  Thanks Citizens of Ur!  I Salute you and your Gardens!

  • Sorry to say it, but the keyboard is your friend for gardening. Once you get the plot selected, you can easily move through the 15 squares to perform all four actions (60 total) without any animals interfering.

I also suggest everyone sell the "rare" restore items in their tower. It's totally fine not to have pigs, but if you put a few plops for sale in your tower, someone can finish restoring while they're there without leaving your street.

  • Brib-I have noticed that on occasion too! I have stuff in front of my herb garden because I rarely plant herbs. I do not have much use for that stuff yet. I DO plant crops and I do try to keep one or two piggies alive for replanting as well. I do not feel like I have enough money to buy "stay sticks". The animals get in my way too though. I usually just perform the actions and patiently wait until they leave the area. I also don't prefer to use the keyboard. It's too much to remember and too many fingers to move. (Yes I'm lazy)
I like your idea of using the note pole as a guide to friends. I think this would not only help visitors but help me remember where to go as well. I hope to see you later. Enjoy your day :)

  • I'm not sure what's scary about the keyboard; you only use two keys: enter and right arrow. Enter to select an action and right arrow to move to the next square:
    - enter: select plot and activate first square
    - enter: harvest
    - enter: clear
    - enter twice: plant
    - enter: water
    - right arrow: next square
(and so on for the other 14 squares)

Seriously, it couldn't be simpler (aside from occasional lag throwing off your rhythm).

I think one of the things that's confusing about using the keyboard is that the mouse cursor position can mess up menu selections. Make sure to move the mouse cursor below the line of bags (out of the way) before you start using the keyboard. (You rarely need to use the mouse in glitch; there are only a few actions not keyboard enabled.)

  • Lol!  I was using the keyboard on one of those "blocked" gardens and accidentally deposited all my grain into a feeder - 4K+!  That really scared me!  Fortunately, only enough to fill the feeder actually went in  :D

  • by the way, if you're trying to get back somewhere, note that the player names that show up in local chat ("you moved from fribbentz's street to whosamacalls's street")  are clickable and if you click on them you'll get a "visit home street" option.   Thus, you can use your movement history in local chat to re-visit home streets that you've been on reasonably recently.

  • To make the keyboard even easier, you don't even have to press enter all those times. Once you're on the first square, press and hold enter until the seed packet decision comes up, then press and hold again until the square is "all good". Right arrow and repeat. Local chat will whine at you to slow down because gardening is a leisurely activity, but they don't have a whole street to take care of.

  • Well, I, for one, absolutely agree 100% with every single thing Brib Annie said - except I'm not really scared of the keyboard, per se, just simply prefer the mouse. But, in the end, I agree that your home street is your own to set up as you please, and I appreciate all the diversity out there. And, yes, I have been known to donate piggies, feeders, and sticks to those in need (to use or not, of course, at their discretion).
