Farewell to Flash 10.1 and PowerPC

Glitches, in the spirit of Progress and making Glitch better every day, we bid a fond farewell to our support for Flash 10.1, and PowerPC processors*. Starting today, neither the game nor wardrobe nor vanity will load on these platforms. Users on an Intel Mac can upgrade their Flash players and keep playing, but all PowerPC players will need to play on Intel-based computers.

* Apple stopped shipping PowerPC computers in 2006 when it switched to Intel processors. Adobe released Flash 10.1 in June 2010; it was the final version of Flash that supported PowerPC. Flash 10.2 and up are Intel-only.

Though we continue to support Flash 10.2 and up, we ask that players install Flash 11 for the best experience of the game, and to make future updates easier.

  • Thank you Jono - I have been getting a message to updateFlash but wasn't sure about it, didn't want to mess up the bug reporting.

  • the tone of this thread reminds me of the day we got told we didn't need to support IE6 anymore :)

  • I meant to add: We supported Flash 10.1 for *as long as we possibly could* and contacted existing subscribers that would be affected before making the change. For what it's worth, *very* few Glitches were affected :)

  • Phew...got a bit worried there for a minute because it said I wasn't updated.
Then I remembered that I had installed the debugger back in beta and so went to the FAQ and found the instructions to install the debugger (I use Chrome) and just did a reverse - so happy that I had allowed flash to update way back before it was supported!! lol

And very happy to be rid of the debugger - was giving me 9 kinds of fits every time I tried to watch a program :P

  • Adobe will not allow me to download v11.  Maybe because I have OSX 10.5.8? Oh well, that's not going to change for awhile.

Guess I'm stuck with flash v10x for awhile.  Be nice to be able to have a way to flag that "yes, I know I don't have v11, stop bothering me now"

    :)

  • Halp! My Mac is OS X, v 10.5.8. It has 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. Adobe will not let me download Flash 11---only 10,3,183,10. Is that because I haven't installed Lion yet? And how is Lion? I didn't want to fiddle with it, but if I need it to install Flash 11 then I will do it. I can't have anything interfering with my glitch! lol

  • Shucks.  I guess I'll just leave the SE/30 in the closet, then.  (it runs NetBSD, actually)

  • I was just Glitching on my backup computer (a G5) this weekend while rendering on my main computer. Oh well, I understand.....but still makes me sadface :*(

  • would have preferred "we no longer support Flash and have moved to HTML5" but this will have to do instead :)

  • HTML5 isn't ready for the awesomeness that is Glitch just yet. =)

  • HTML5 isn't ready for anything but video playback really.   It's sort of a mirage.

  • This has really screwed up the game for me. Nothing is working right. Not a happy camper.

  • @Parrow: semantic tags + modernizr!  and doctype!  What's not to love?  But yes.  Actually, IMO, even the current HTML5 solution with multiple video formats is not really ideal.  But I am still a fan and continue to dream :)

  • Playing using Chrome which automatically keeps flash updated. Not having any problems.

  • The flash check code needs a bit of work.  It warns me about using Flash 10 on occasionb when, in fact, I'm using Flash 11 (two different versions because 11/32-bit crashes on certain streets, and 11/64-bit fails to scroll the wardrobe and crashes on other streets, luckily I can switch the two easily).

  • @Addie: +1.

  • Big problem with version 11 is that it does not support 64 bit unless it's on windows 7.

It's not a horrible about of trouble, but it is a bit unstable.

  • Well, I was able to answer my own question. Flash 11 does not require Lion. It requires OS X, v 10.6.8, which is the version on my MacBookPro.

  • I think it would have been more accurate to say that users will need to be using computers with x86 processors now, rather than Intel processors (my AMD processor runs Glitch very well, thank you).

Having said that, this post is aimed at Apple users and I'm pretty sure Apple only uses Intel processors at the moment.

  • Flash v11 really doesn't seem as ready for prime-time as some make it out to be. I can see not supporting 10.1 at this point, but why tell us 10.3x isn't good enough also when it is perfectly ok to use?
Posted 13 months ago by Tibbi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Jono has been testing 11 for months. I also have been testing it since July when it was still in beta (as was Glitch itself - yes I was double-beta testing both apps at the same time). Neither of us have identified any current issues recently either under Ubuntu Linux, Windows 7, or Mac OS X Lion (Tiny Speck uses mostly Macs). @Jono is one of TS's main Flash programmer. The rendering engine is his. Why? Because he was part of Adobe's Flash development team and still has strong ties with the company. He's actually seen the source code for it. :)

There are features of Flash 11 that will help make Glitch more stable, responsive and, hopefully, more fun.

HTML5 has been discussed here before. There is interest but the technology is not mature enough yet for applications the size and scale of Glitch. This also applies for Microsoft's Silverlight technology. The latter is fully supported by major browsers, and is more mature than HTML5, but it hasn't acquired the degree of features that Flash already has.

  • Does this mean I can't play it on my sp(l)anking new and spiffing Apple II?
Posted 13 months ago by HenkDroid Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Maybe NaCl client then. True it will work only for Chrome, but maybe will provide better performance and will be more stable.
Posted 13 months ago by Lilla My Subscriber! | Permalink
  • You can always install Linux on your earlier Apples and run Flash 11 that way :)
Posted 13 months ago by Fokian Fool Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Zinfidel You are absolutely correct, x86 would have been a better term. Really I should have just clarified this to be an Apple-related thread. (Though technically 10.1 isn't allowed on Windows, either.)

@Tibbi, @Fokian is correct! In order to improve the performance and visuals of the game we need access to Flash 11's new bits. I suspect the reason it is OS X 10.6.8+ only is that Apple added APIs which Flash 11 uses and requires -- it's pretty serious for Adobe to release a player which cannot be installed on older OS X machines -- so it must have been a hard but necessary decision.

@Fokian Thanks for being correct and writing on the forum in the meantime that I haven't been!

  • There are many many Mac Snow Leopard users, me included, who have no plan on upgrading to Lion, as to do so would require me an additional $1000 of other critical software upgrades to be compatible with Lion; software I have to use daily for business.

Im betting (and hoping) that FLASH will run on Snow Lep. Intel Macs for years to come.
