What are the greeters?

From what my friends have told me and what I have read, I understand that:
greeters are companions to new players

That's about as far as my knowledge goes... What else is there to it? I would love to become "qualified" to become one (even though I have only played for the last three tests) and was wondering how to do this.

Thanks in advance!

  • They are staff members I think. @Jade was my greeter when I first started. She began as a player and became a staff member later.

  • I didn't get an official greeter, but my friend Cupcake helped me out and she is part of the greeters. She is not a staff member...

  • I am a greeter myself, they are mostly older players and the staff help out too. We meet you in the start streets (where there is lots of free stuff on the ground) and we answer questions and help them out.

We are still hammering out the qualifications for now but it has been mostly nominations getting people into the program.

Pepper_Rose runs it, she knows more.

  • thats so cool! What kind of work do they do exactly? do they just request the player to follow them around while they talk? or do they wait for the new player to ask questions? When I help out players, its like dropping 3k on them and saying enjoy...

  • Several of the greeters are players.  During tests, they meet squishy brand new Glitchen on a start street, and show them how to do some basic tasks, answer any questions about the game, and then when the player is ready, send them on their merry way.

The requirements for being a greeter are being reworked (I believe), but basically if you are interested, convey your interest to Pepper Rose, the community manager.  If you meet the requirements, you will get an invite to the group and do some on-the-job training and then you will be a greeter!

Djoe6897, your interest in the greeter program has already been forwarded to the greeter devs, someone will be in touch with you soon.  I noticed a post in your updates and forwarded it to PepRo the other day.

  • oh me too please! I would love to help with this even though I am still kind of newish compared to the Alpha folks.

  • Ack, don't hug the messenger, I don't get to decide who becomes a greeter!  But I am happy to pass on the interest (and I suspect Pepper Rose reads the forums and will see this thread).   :D

I hesitate to post all this in advance of a dev posting that is surely coming soon, so apologies in advance if this is all jumpin-the-gunnish. And don't make any bets on what I am saying here!

  • Djoe6897, don't take my skittishness as some indicator about you or TCF, I think you would be both great greeters...I just don't want to be a potentially inaccurate mouthpiece for something that needs to be said by someone else (that is, a dev).

  • aaaaaaaaaand it's Nanookie down the back straight, with Pepper_Rose coming up on the outside, Nanookie holding fast, Pepper_Rose attempting a comeback.... and - IT'S STOOT, STOOT ON THE INSIDE....

  • I just realized, greeters ARE like Walmart greeters.
    - There to tell me hello.
    - There to tell me things they can honestly find out easily for themselves (but sometimes it's nice to have someone right there).
    - Tend to be older.

  • @lord bacon-o

this is exactly what my boyfriend said to me when i mentioned greeting.  we could not stop laughing. he likes to make fun of me, partly because i'm easy to make fun of, and partly because, well, it was hilarious. i'll take my blue vest now. and smile and wave a lot. i'll also take the pay, please!

  • If anybody out there is listening, I would love to get involved in the greeter program at some point. I have a background in training in real life, and I'm really interested in helping to find that in-game balance point between giving a helping hand and handing out answers.

  • Yeah, @Lord B-o. That's why I had to quit. Didn't meet the age qualification.

  • I'm interesting to find out more about it. I was a greeter for a Burning Man regional event, it was a blast time. :) So, any requirement or whatever, I would like to know, so I can be prepare to apply if there is one in the future.

  • Ignore all of the above. We're an alien race sent to confound and confuzzle new players, so that they don't notice how much fun they're having until they look up and realize they're addicted.
Posted 17 months ago by Essie Kitten Subscriber! | Permalink
  • We are also widely believed to be bots Don't *bzzt* Believe It. There is not actually a physical age qualification, if everyone older than me was qualified it would be almost all of you, trust me.
Posted 17 months ago by Ani Laurel Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Probably not me tho Ani. Unless, you're the same age as me or younger.
Posted 17 months ago by KitkatCat Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm just going to add. It is not all roses. Some of the people you go to greet are just plain rude. :)
Posted 17 months ago by Misha Subscriber! | Permalink
  • For the most part, we are all greeters - helping out new players as we go along our way in the game = whether it be directions or how to make something, find something, etc.  That's what I like, I don't have to "belong" to help - it's just in my nature.
Posted 17 months ago by MzMunchken Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I was a greeter, and hopefully will become one again in the future, although its great to help people, its not a walk in the park, sometimes they just ignore you, or just go and pick the free items up and leave, but its changed since i was a greeter. i think they pick the greeters on their knowledge, so your best bet to become one is helping in the live help channel and global chat. although people are reccomended it doesnt mean they will become one. hopefully in a few months i will, but good luck to everyone that "applys" (shows interest)

  • Also...I do know that they want to have greeters greeting 24/7 by launch, so if you live on non-North American Hours, or enjoy military-grade insomnia, I am sure PepRo would love to hear from you.

And while it is very fun, it's true you spend a good chunk of time either being ignored, or accused of being a bot, despite your sparkly wit.

And what MzMunchken said is so true--you don't have to be a Greeter to be a greeter.
Posted 17 months ago by Nanookie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I know that when I first signed on, I didn't even realize there was a chat box.  So if I had a greeter and ignored him or her, many apologies!
Posted 17 months ago by jasbo Subscriber! | Permalink
  • +1 MzMunchken, very well said and so true:) jasbo, one of the first things I tell my "silent" ones is how to type locally because a lot of the people I know had the exact same thing going on, hehehehe. Plus the whole thing about not being a bot just gets too funny. One woke up to it because I was making typos...though usually my choice of clothing (or lack thereof) kinda points them in the right direction.

  • No greeters when i started.  I noticed the Help Chat but did not know there was a Local Chat.  Help was full of personal Chit-chat and not so helpful so I am very glad we have Greeters.  I would enjoy doing that but I don't have the time to put into it so, Like MZ, I will help how and when I can.  Maybe Greeters should wear a t-shirt with a "?" on it while on duty or, in RM's case maybe a Hat (giggle).

  • the greeter program is great! i remember encountering my greeter and turning to my husband and saying "wow.. the NPCs in this game are scripted so well!!"

and then 3 minutes later "uh.. i don't think this is an NPC.. wow people are so nice in this game!"

    great job greeters! :)
Posted 17 months ago by mileena Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Haha, we get a lot of people who think that to begin with, mileena :) In fact, we have a whole list of lines and phrases to make each of our greets that little bit cRaZeE!
Posted 17 months ago by Hburger Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Well said Mz...you kinda know in the game when someone could use some help..so stop, say hi, give em a hug and a little help.

I'm gonna push for blue vests.

  • What about carrying a sign with a big "?" on it a la Trader Joe's?
Posted 17 months ago by jasbo Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Actually, a lot of greeters aren't so much for being marked out (been much discussion on this), except maybe some indication on a profile page. We'll see where that ends up:)
Posted 17 months ago by RM Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I meant that maybe you should wear them on the Start streets when you are greeting so new players can recognize you.  No one would know otherwise.
Posted 17 months ago by Brib Annie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I don't think there's a problem with new players recognizing us - the start streets are instanced, so the greeter is the only other Glitch on the street.
Posted 17 months ago by Varaeth Subscriber! | Permalink
  • On a start street, there are no other players besides newbie and greeter.
Posted 17 months ago by Nanookie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Well, Brib, LOL, in the start streets, it just one greeter and one newbie. And they have to say yes that they want a greeter. So I think they know it's us :D But yes, it would have to be a hat for me (or a special brassiere I suppose :D ).
Posted 17 months ago by RM Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Wait. You're all joking, right? There's no such thing as official greeters.

    Right?
Posted 17 months ago by Victoria Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Errrr, we're not joking...are you? :)
Posted 17 months ago by RM Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Victoria: I recently joined the greeters, and I can assure you that the greeters are real :)
Posted 17 months ago by Varaeth Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm very serious, this is my serious face!

I've seen greeters mentioned before in the forum, but thought it was just a name for players who like to go to the streets where newbies start out and help them out. And that these players could join a group, just like any other group for players with a shared interest. But actual official greeters with a dev in charge? I would never have thought of that.

Also: I didn't encounter a greeter when I started out, was everyone off duty that day? ;)
Posted 17 months ago by Victoria Subscriber! | Permalink
  • they are still testing the whole programme so i think its only on a certain times due to staff availibility (i think)
Posted 17 months ago by Marcm Subscriber! | Permalink
  • When did you join Glitch, Victoria?
Posted 17 months ago by Hburger Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Victoria, as I understand it, the greeter program as been on and off (as Tiny Speck develops it and sees how they want it to work). And even now it is not up all the time. They can turn it on and off (because, like almost everything in beta, they are still testing it).

As it works now, new players are given the option of having a greeter meet them. And that option is only presented when it is turned "on."

But, yes, it is a Tiny Speck driven program.
Posted 17 months ago by Lord Bacon-o Subscriber! | Permalink
  • My first test was May 26.

So, greeters are a real thing. I think it's cute. Not something I've seen before in other games...
Posted 17 months ago by Victoria Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think that greeting may have been off around May 26. Yeah, it's funny; we've had a lot of, "Wow, I've never been greeted by a person in a game." Part of Tiny Speck's commitment to making Glitch a welcoming place. Cool, eh? :)
Posted 17 months ago by RM Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It may have been sparked by the survey question,"Was it easy to get started?".  Also by the way the game is played using a keyboard.  Most people are so used to using a mouse that when they get here for the first time they have trouble getting around.  I know from experience - LOL!  I always rate that question a "3".  I had a lot of trouble moving for some reason and may have quit during the first 15 min. if I hadn't had so many friends here already so I just struggled on til I learned.  Wish I had had a Greeter.
Posted 17 months ago by Brib Annie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Brib Annie one of the jobs of a greeter is to help you with the keyboard. That and teaching you about making faces. Also how to jump using spinach :)
