What do you look for in a house?

I ask because I find myself gravitating more and more towards the bog houses.  This is not only because of the herbs, although those are a definite bonus, but also because of the layout.  I love the fact that the bog houses have multiple rooms!  They are nice and compartmentalized so that one could, for example, keep his or her icons in one room, meat / milk collector in another, and so forth.  I would love to see some a two-level cottage homes at some point!

And while I have your attention, who else is longing for more 7.5k bog houses?  I've seen another thread about this, but I just thought I would add to the plea for more of these homes!!!  I'd sell my place in Groddle Meadow if I could find a 7.5k bog house!!!  And that's saying a lot!  :)

  • I have a large house but I don't really like it there and hardly go, I bought it for the large cupboard :) . It's just a backdrop and no use at all to me.

As I spend more time in the game, I realise that I don't enjoy the farming, growing things aspect, too much like farmville and very boring. Just trying to cover as much of the map as possible at the moment but that is getting a bit dull now.

Did look at the bog houses, they are better designed and seem cozy but I find the whole area to be a bit depressing and dark and not somewhere I enjoy spending time.

I was so excited to get my first house but the novelty soon wore off. Not sure if I will still be here when the new housing is introduced as I am really not finding the game very interesting.

Oh dear, that all seems a bit negative. I do enjoy the forums, very amusing.

  • When I finally had enough currants for a house, I wanted what was popular, which was one of meadow houses (which I thought were pretty). I finally got one, and I never used it. Then I finally decided to get the type of housing I really loved, which was a bog house, despite the fact that I couldn't grow crops in it. (This was before all the hullabaloo about herbs and potions). I just loved the cozy feel of it. I immediately fell in love with it after stepping through the front door, and now it's truly my home in Ur.

You're quite right that the different compartments make a great way to organise your house. Also, I believe they are the only houses that allow you to place things on tables. Here's how I've decorated mine. :)

Some see the bog as dark and dismal, but to me it just seems so full of life. Not the butterflies and piggies prancing through a field kind of life, but the damp, mossy undergrowth, where the soil is rich, you can hear the croaking of frogs, and you can run through the warm evening air, capturing fireflies after the sun goes down.
I learned that if you want to use your home to the fullest, choose the house you love. Not the one you think will reap the most profits, or hold the most items, but the one you truly enjoy coming home too. If you do, you'll use it more, enjoy yourself more, and be the happiest Glitch you can be. :)

  • I owned a 5K bog house last night for all of seven hours :)  - I was insomnia-surfing in the middle of the night, noticed one pop up in Chakra Phool, then sold my 30K Salatu house and bought the Koitu clutter one. Went there first thing this morning and after hopping through about five streets realized it was going to drive me crazy traveling back and forth to it. A cottage in Groddle Meadows opened up and I immediately sold the bog house and moved there.

I actually like the big modern houses - I can see why people describe them as sterile and lacking in character, but I liked the floor space and two levels, not to mention the animal pen. But I really wanted to try living in another part of the world for a while and walk different streets, mine in different areas, and so on. So what the heck, Groddle Meadows for a bit.

If a house in a more walkable neighbourhood opens up in the bogs I might try a bog house again. Of all the things I envy, I envy the ability to place things on tables! But hopping around in Chakra Phool on my laggy laptop causes crap jumping for me, so I didn't even make it through two full Ur-days in that one.

That said, my present cottage has the most hideous interior I've lived in in Ur. It's one of the goth cottages with red and pink rooms. I'm either going to spend all my time in the back yard, or it will drive me straight back to the soothing neutrals of the mansions :)

  • Watch for a bog house in Kalavana- those streets are very walkable. Though you do have to dip into Chakra Phool to get to a subway, but the streets to it aren't too bad (nothing like the middle streets of that region).

I chose my house for the cozy cottage design and clean, classy, artsy interior. It wasn't garishly bright like some of the other cottages, but it wasn't too sterile looking either (though I got my first cottage way before the 50k styles were put into the game). I like the number of tree patches and the number of crop plots as well. The only thing that originally annoyed me was the animals getting in my way... but I've figured out how to use the garden now without them getting in the way. It's got a nice foresty view in the backyard and through the front windows, too.

I did have a Salatu mansion for a few weeks before the first beta ended because I wanted to try the size out. I liked the space and the levels, but hated the plainness. It was way easier for me to organize in it though and feel like it still looked tidy.

Oh, please share how you manage to do this! I do miss the pens - the pigs get so underfoot while gardening, I almost wish I could splank them.
I like your cottage - it's just like the friend's I was hanging out in while preparing to move. Much less frightful than the goth version.

  • Hehe. Yea, I like that cottage style the best. :)

The way I manage my garden without animal interference is simply to select the garden with Enter and then use the arrow keys and Enter to go around each plot doing what I need to do. That removes the accidental clicks. You won't select the animals unless you exit out of the garden (which you can do by clicking on the window somewhere or hitting Esc).

  • thanks!  I thought I tried that but somehow couldn't figure out how to navigate around the actual plots; I'll give it another shot.

It's funny how the 15K cottages were so coveted for a while, but are quite a bit more readily found now that the 7.5K bog houses have apparently taken their place.

I like the idea someone suggested earlier about moving from house to house, staying for a while and  upgrading them to leave fun stuff for the next owner. I was certainly excited to find so many piggies and zucchini when I moved in!

That might be a fun thing to do till people tire of their bog houses :)

    This, this, oh this.

Reminds me of dark summer nights walking along the rail trail while everybody else sleeps with the stars and the fireflies and... *happy sigh*

  • I think it's mostly the herbs and potions that have caused 15k cottages to be less coveted. It's good that people are spreading out a bit more though. :)

It's a nice idea, moving from house to house, but I'm the sort of person that likes to get settled in for the long haul when it comes to my Glitch's home. She moved in 5 or 6 hours after we reopened after the reset and was the first on her block and at least one of the first (if not the first) in her neighborhood. Whatever else in the Glitch world may change, only my house (well, until they put in customization) will stay the same unless I choose to change it.

Before reset, I moved 3 times total.

  • Oh, please share how you manage to do this! I do miss the pens - the pigs get so underfoot while gardening, I almost wish I could splank them.

Hit enter when standing next to the garden. You can maneuver through the plots with the arrow keys. Hit enter to select the one you want. Enter again to do whatever it is that it needs at that moment. And then hit escape to walk away.

My gardening activity goes like this:
Stand next to plot. [Enter]. [Enter] [Up] repeated through the whole garden 4 times once to pick stuff, once to weed it, again to plant the seeds, and the last time to water. You get into a rhythym and can go pretty fast, so best be careful if you've got guano in your sacks (I keep mine on the ground and just pick up what I need when I need it)

  • I've probably moved 30 times since reset.  I've lived in almost every area in the game, and in just about every type of house.  Including the more obscure and very rare bog house types.

Right now I'm just camping out in a McMansion in Salatu.  I've owned about six of them in Salatu, I think, though it's hard to keep count.  Salatu seems to be the place I keep coming back to, probably just for it's genericness to be honest.

Right now I wish I could get a large bog house in Kalavana because it's nice and quiet out there.  Another wonderful place to live, but remote, are the new Mountain Cave houses in Aranna at Erra Kandi and Kottima Cast.

  • Im eyeing a place myself if I could ever scrape together the money, most likely in Salatu or a nearby locale. my current home Aranna isn't bad per-say, its just I've grown to love animal kinship more so id like a herdkeeping spot...

and id like to be closer to the subway system. its such a journey to get where i want to go sometimes, that having a subway connection would save me a lot of trouble. I'm still green in this game, but it always feels like I'm descending off a mountain just to go somewhere, especially if its not t'go mining.

  • I look for enough space to garden to my capacity, enough room to store my things and the right price for my budget. I settled on a 15K meadows house when I first bought and in general haven't been dissatisified. Meadows is rich with harvestables, it's near to IX , the Firebogs, and Uralia, and relatively close to Akalol. If I really need to go up north, or if I jsut want to wander up there,  I can take the subway most of the way anywhere I care to go. I wouldn't mind more room, but it can wait until the housing changes come through this spring.

  • I look for the tree patches.  I so much prefer those Meadow homes with the 5 trees, or the rock caves with the 2 regular trees and an egg plant patch.  Those are, IMO, the best bang for your buck.  I know some love to garden, and others love the pens for animals...but I love the quaintness of the Meadow cottages the best.  I also look for home neighborhoods near the subway (within a couple streets) and with good vendors nearby - my favs are grocery, produce, hardware.  I truly look forward to the housing decorating upgrades...it's a creative area that I dearly miss from other games that I play. I love building and creating in my personal space (don't have a need to impose my preferences on others in the rest of the world per se)...but want some creative outlets in the game.

  • I used to look for houses with lots of tree patches, but I don't like the Groddle Meadow ones, or the super-expensive ones, so for ages I had a Bortola mud-cave house. (I liked having a dark patch for eggs as well as ones for regular trees)
Just recently I decided I would get a bog house, because they're super-cute and rather gloomy in a lovely way.
I got a 7500 one, with a firefly swarm, barnacles, dark patch and 12 herb patches, and I love it! I've since taken up crystalmalizing and tincturing, which I find really fun, so it's great having my own crystal-making stuff and so much room to grow herbs! :D

  • I look for the houses I like. In beta, I pretty well determined that the bogs were for me, so I've almost always lived there, aside from a brief foray into Andra (which proved to me that I didn't like it there, something I pretty well knew going in). I like Kalavana- the sunset colors of the sky, the unique layouts of the streets, the the relatively low traffic in the area. Hopefully, though, at some point it'll be on the way to somewhere instead of its own little cul-de-sac.

  • I like the gothy details of my Bortola cottage (it's all red and grey... no pink), but I actually spend more time in my ex-bf's fire bog house in Kalavana. I love the multiple levels and the details like the little "goldfish" bowl. If I didn't need to grow crops, I'd buy one for myself. The goth houses should be more dark like the bog houses! They're too brightly lit!

  • Initially I looked for trees and location, now I'm looking for space and style and still, even with all the skills, location.  I want walkable access to a subway station, different types of territory, and a grocer.   Other plusses are nearby produce and toy vendors, machine shop, and crabs.  Groddle Meadow and Forest are really hard to beat  the above criteria because of their connections to Ix, Uralia, and Shimla Mirch, with Shimla itself coming a pretty close third.  Palsa Mosch, my current street, scores high on all of the above, especially for the local grocer.

I am saddened by streets without trees, and especially alienated by the blank walls of the modern housing streets. If Erra Kandi residential blocks had trees I might be there now despite the distance, because I love caves and I love Aranna.

I don't understand why the world has so few grocers and so many vendors of durable goods.  Everything you get from hardware, kitchen, and alchemical, the most plentiful vendors, pretty much lasts forever once you have basic tinkering, but groceries are consumed constantly in many crafts and most aren't themselves craftable.   Also, it'd be great if the subway expanded.  Obviously expanding would make some trips longer if you try to keep it all in one big loop, but I think access to all serves the greater good.

  • I just moved to a 5k bog house (wanted a 7.5k one but they're too hard to get). I love the multiple rooms and the oriental decor. I can see it getting a bit squishy once i get more animals, but I still like it.

  • I live in a teeny, tiny apartment in Louise Pasture Villa!  I don't have the advanced teleportation skills, so I'm a sucker for location.  :)  I do really love the 15k cottage, though.

Drakani, your pictures are lovely!  That's exactly the type of home I'd love to have.

I've read a lot of debates regarding the esthetics of the bog houses, but I have to agree that they are cozy and, well... they're just COOL!  This is an imaginary world, so I don't necessarily need my glitch to live in a home that I myself would choose in the real world.

For some reason, I find crop gardening quite boring, but I could spend hours planting and harvesting herbs.  I can't really explain why, though.  It's still an imaginary plant!  My boyfriend has a bog house and I, like Dr.MaudGonne, find myself spending more time in his house then in my own.  Now THAT is very much like real life...  ;-)

I actually ventured to Aranna yesterday and absolutely fell in love with the northern part.  The little dirt huts are cute, too!  But I suppose, to answer my own question, that location is of the utmost importance to me (as much as I dream of a large bog house).  Now - When I get Teleportation V, I'm sure I'll change my tune!!!

One more thought, and I hope the devs are listening...  I would love, love, LOVE to see housing in Uralia!!!!  It's my favorite area of Ur and I would dearly love to be in on designing some trippy, colorful pear houses where the hardcore miners could live.

  • Forgot to add one more thing -
I'm also longing for more ability to decorate and personalize the homes.  Particularly, I'd like to be able to hang things on the wall.  It would also be nice if we could purchase things like tables (on which items could be placed), vases of flowers (flower-growing... NEW SKILL???), and larger storage cabinets!!!  I bet a lot of people would fork over currants for more storage space.

Okay, I'm done dreaming for now.  :)
Posted 12 months ago by Little Violet Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Those dreams are going to be a reality someday with the housing customization coming, Little Violet. :)

Maybe not everything you think of will be customizable, but I'm sure a most will be. They've spoken of having decor for houses that we could get to place in houses and being able to choose different house frames and customize your yard to your liking.

Yep, it is the thing I still look forward to most.

  • cabinet and furniture making would be a great new skill! (and give people something to do with planks).

I don't think I'd particularly want to learn it, but I'd pay a Glitchy carpenter to make me stuff.

The scenery in Aranna is great - awesome backdrop to those cave houses. That's one of my disappointments with the homes (at least from what I can see on the Realty pages) in Rasana - I thought they might have more scenic backgrounds. But from what I can see, they look pretty much like the Salatu houses. I'd be happy to learn I'm wrong, though.

This put a huge smile on my face. This is exactly how I feel. The firebugs are so beautiful and homey, exciting but still familiar. The music just adds to the mystery of the place. I used to hate the bogs and bog houses so much, and now I don't ever want to leave. And you're right about all the different rooms, so here's my layout (for some reason it's a little fuzzy, i might reupload tomorrow).

The first room is just an entryway so far, then a temple room in the upper left, the brewery below that, and the lab off to the right. Down below, another icon and all my pets.

I love the new Aranna scenery, but I could really never leave Mazza'la for anything.

  • Originally, I had a 50k home in Kajuu which I loved for the four tree patches and the 28 crop plots. Lots of space, an animal pen, and a backdrop that I really enjoyed. I also liked that it was just a hop, skip, and a jump from the Ancestral Lands.

When potionmaking came out, I got a 5k bog house, but I found that potionmaking wasn't my cup of tea and so I sold that. I missed having my crop plots because I love to cook in Glitch. (Awesome Stews! <3) I did like the appearance of the bog house, but never set foot outside the place because I don't particularly look the appearance of the swamps.

My current house I originally bought so I could have a snowy backdrop for winter. It's a 10k in Aranna which has an animal pen, which I ADORE, 16(?) crop plots, and one tree patch. I wish it had more tree patches, but I love the place to bits now. Sure, Aranna doesn't have a subway stop, but I have TP5 so that wasn't a huge issue. The place is quiet (only one other glitch lives on my street) and very pretty, plus I love the spinach-only hiding spot in it. Great place for storage!
