Larger Avatars Outside The Game Client

The scale of the avatars in the game client is just fine, but recent events have made me wonder if avatars should be presented at a significantly larger scale on the website itself.

So I was looking at Mister Stewart Butterfield's profile page today, because I spied his quirky new hairstyle.

It was then that I noticed his nifty Dashiki, which looked like it had been fashioned out of post-it notes or some-such.

Wanted to see the clothes more clearly, I opened up firebug and expanded the avatar to 400px high.

Here is the screenshot: http://striatic.net/jing/2011-04-04_1148.png

What struck me about this enlargement is that all the avatar's facial and clothing artwork really held up! There are many little details that are difficult to see at the size the avatars are currently presented.

I would really like to see avatars rendered at these larger dimensions at times, perhaps on the profile page, perhaps elsewhere. Also very curious to see what the avatars look like when animated at these sizes.

  • Zooming in (cmd+) with browser also works to see avatars bigger. But yeah, I'd love to have a little magnifying glass icon to see a bigger version of someone's avatar on their profile! :)

  • yes AlphaKatana, i am well aware of what vector artwork is.

not all vector artworks contain enough detail to look good when scaled up. the fact that it is vector based isn't the only reason it scales well.

  • For proof of the above statement, try zooming in on any of the item swfs: eg. http://alpha.glitch.com/items/177/

Browser zoom does not resize the image. Right click -> Zoom in shows exactly what striatic means.
