Trader Glitches Farmer's Market

I came up with an idea that I think may help with the recent herb garden issue.

I would like to propose a Glitch Farmer's Market that encourages the trade of herbs, vegetables, animal goods, and hooch (can't forget the booze) so that everyone has access to what they need and gets their fair share.

EDIT: The market would be TRADE ONLY. This way Glitches will still use the auctions and it would keep the price of goods down.

I'm not sure if anyone would participate though... and i'm still working out the details and kinks.
Here is a link to the group: http://www.glitch.com/groups/RDOGRHBQ71J28CB/

What do you guys think? Please let me know if you see any issues with this or post any ideas you have. Or post in the group ideas thread if you want to join!

  • Very interesting idea. I don't think I've heard anything like this before.  might be a little complicated to get going, but it is very intriguing on the face of it.

roughly how would it work? (don't mean to sound dumb, just trying to gauge the wind, and in that aspect, farmer's market... I AM dumb)

  • Haha no worries!
I was thinking there would be two parts to the market:
    1) Host a Market two to three times a week where everyone who has something that they want to trade can go. This way it is a social event and will bring awareness to the market.
    2) For those that want to be a member of the group there would be an ongoing market in the group discussions and group chat.

I think it would work well this way but I am definitely open to any new ideas!

  • I think this is a great idea! Once a location is chosen, vendors can arrive a little prior to the time when buyers will start showing up, write a note about their shop, detailing what they're selling, prices, deals/bunches, etc. Someone who knows penmanship can help out those who don't, but still want to set up shop. Hopefully people realize that fair pricing is the way to go here, helping out fellow glichen. :)

  • I love Love LOVE this idea!  I hope it continues!  Count me IN!       ^_~

  • That's a good idea Leif, but I was thinking maybe we should keep it trade only? This way we can encourage people to continue using the auction boards and keep the price of goods down.

  • What is to stop your fellow Glitchen from purchasing 'fair' priced goods and then selling them for higher prices at auction, where the price reflects the true demand for those goods?

The reason herbs and herb seeds are in such demand right now is because a lot of players are chasing the potion-related badges and achievements.  Once those players have finished with that everything will settle back down to normal, and until they do prices will be high.

  • I agree with that, WalruZ. That is why I think the markets should be trade only. The only issue I see with that is figuring out how many tomatoes it costs for a silver tongue flower... Or should it just be based on quantity or need? I need a flower and you need ten potatoes so we switch?
Or whatever you feel is fair?

(See, I need help with this lol!)

  • "Once those players have finished with that [chasing the potion-related badges and achievements] everything will settle back down to normal ... "

When will this "Once" be? I pose that there will never be this "Once," because as long as there continues to be 1) a fresh supply of glitch who seek the potion badges and achievements, and 2) a dearth in the supply herbs due to geographical limitations of herb gardens, I believe the demand for the herbs will continue.  If the supply of potion-glitches dwindle relative to the supply of herbs, then maybe the demand of herbs will go down. Or if the supply of herbs suddenly glut the market, and overwhelm the demand by the potion-glitches, then maybe the herb prices will go down.

Simply put, I don't see any evidence that the supply of glitches who seek the potion-related badges and achievements will go down in the future. In fact, because the game seems to be seeking more new players as a matter of rule, I believe the supply of potion-glitches will increase, and the herb prices will not subside. I hope I'm wrong.

Proposed solutions include herb gardening outside of the southern region. I think that would greatly relieve the pent-up demand for herbs.

  • This is a really neat idea and I'm interested to see how this would work out! I often have an excess of crops and would totally be willing to trade them for other resources I need/want aside from herbs as well (food, tools, etc.).

  • That's all great and dandy but nothing prevents me from say, buy all of your stuff at your "fair" price and resell on the auction at the "real" price.

  • That is why The market would be trade only.

I adjusted the thread discussion to show this.

  • It doesn't matter if it's trade only. I can get a basket of goods (in this case herbs) for other goods at the value you think is "fair" (below market) and then I can resell at the auction for a profit.

No matter how you try to circumvent the market, somebody will find a way to exploit it and level the playing field. That's how you get rich, by exploiting inefficiency in the market.

  • Count me in to at least give it a try :) Exploiters can be caught rather early and removed or whatever. I'm relatively new to game...2 1/2 wks :D But know my way around.

  • Just joined the group, hoping it all goes well. I believe there good potential if we also keep an eye on the auctions if anyone tries to exploit the good will.

  • I agree with you completely BTS0x0. No matter what you do someone is going to exploit the system. But I think there should be additional venues where people can work together to get what they need to help with the tension that has built up since now that there is a greater demand on herbs. But the same things goes towards any resources/supplies you can get in the game.

  • This sounds like the solution to my dilemma. I'm ready to make potions, but don't have the herbs. There's *no* way I'm going to join the ugliness of the community herb gardens. And I'm not going to pay outragious prices. I was thinking of moving to a bog house to grow my own, but I don't want to leave my mountain home. I can grow lots of veggies and would like to be able to trade for the herbs I need. I have lots of other things I could trade also..crafting, etc.
It makes zero difference that someone can cheat the system, gouging prices at auction. The trading would still work. And jerks will be found out in the end anyway, and shunned or whatever.
Thanks for coming up with a great idea, Sparrow. ^,^

  • "Herb prices are too high, so we're going to give herb growers a chance to sell their products for less!  Join here!"

    -- good luck with that.

  • I like the idea of a weekly farmer's market, but think the prices/trade values should be left between the buyer and the seller. Let the seller declare what they have for sale, and negotiate what and how much they're willing to accept in trade. Good old fashioned bartering! And if auction resellers come along, so what? They still have to put up something in trade to get the goods. I have an abundance of veggies and hooch I'd be willing to put up in trade for herbs once I get around to learning tincturing.
