Flash Update 10.2

I regret to say farewell to all my friends.
Glitch has made the 10.2 update in Flash, which my computer is not supported for.

I thank you for all the fun and anticipated excitement.
Maybe when I can afford an Intel Mac, I can enjoy Glitch once more.

  • Note from Jono- Staff when I posted the same issue:

I will be looking at our Flash version requirements after this test completes. If there's another browser you can use in the meantime, please use it!

    Hang in there Orefye

  • For the next few days we will continue to support older versions of Flash, so you should be able to continue playing. The performance of later players is much better, especially on Intel, so we'd like to have people upgrade, but maybe we can hold out a little longer ;-)

  • @Mystbecky - Thank you - had read it before, but was confused...

@Jono - Thank you very much for opening the "gate".
I understand the performance issues and relativity of need.
While I (and a few others) have an older machine and love Glitch, I am hoping you can hold out a LOT longer, until us 'poor' glitchians can afford to appease the real world giants.
    OR
if you can write a bit of code that can usurp the current need of an
    Intel chip....? :) sshhhhhh...

But I am very proud of my Powerbook 867. The lag problem are the same. It seems that you've written Glitch so well, that it runs better than some of the other online games.

All I can do is beg you leave the older player versions through live...

    Many thanks

  • I'd like to add my voice to the other PowerPC chipsters. I thought my G4 worked fine until Adobe decided not to support us any more. No way to upgrade my Mac & WAY no way I'll be affording another system before '12. Can you hear the steel guitar in the background? I'm REALLY sad about this.

  • Well, I have this version
" Show My Flash Player Version
This is the complete version number of the Flash Player installed on your computer:

    MAC 10,2,154,27"

and still cannot play Glitch on the Mac, if that is any consolation.

  • Not too sure on this, but will using a LiveCD (of any recent distro) on the Mac enable you to use an updated version of Flash?

  • @riscy, Wondering if you may still have to uninstall the older version...
Very strange you are having problems. I was told they re-instated the older versions of support, so if you still have problems, you may want to uninstall 10.2 and install 10.1 for the time being.
    Worth a try.

  • @roderick, looked up LiveCD, seems to be a Windows only program.
Came across Ubuntu, while searching for LiveCD. I'm checking it out and looks promising. will see if I can get this situated before next test.
If not, I'll have to wait for a hardware upgrade...

There is a workaround for 10.4 server, though, that you can install the 10.2 Flash package and still works through the older 10.1 version of Flash. Tried it, but I don't have server and proved to help the play but not trick the servers that I have 10.2

  • AFAIK, LiveCDs are not limited to Windows, but most LiveCDs are designed to run on Intel-based machines. I have run the LiveCD version of ubuntu on a friend's Mac before, but it was a Mac with an Intel processor also. So far, I haven't encountered any non-intel machine to test on, but Ubuntu does have a port for it: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/9.10/release/

EDIT: Realized that this may not work as well, as it may be Flash itself that doesn't support the processor. :( Anyway, it is still worth a try. Good luck!

  • I had no problems with the last test.  I have a laptop with Win7 and an AMD chip.  I am using FF4 and have Flash 10.2.159.1.  I am having problems with "Gardens of Time" at FB and get Flash error messages when I play that.

  • @orefye, I have tried to uninstall Flash using the app on their website, but when I go back to check it still says it is installed.  I have searched for a way to manually delete it myself with no luck so far.

The other option is that I have found a 10.3 version instead - as the devs are stopping support for older Flash versions, it might make sense to upgrade to that and see.  The only problem is that it says to uninstall previos version first, which I can't do *sigh*

  • Riscy-Are you on a Mac or Windows compatible? If its Mac I know nothing and can't help. If Windows, then going into control panel should have an option of "add/remove programs" somewhere and you should be able to look up your Flash programs there (listed under Adobe Flash probably) and then uninstall them before reinstalling the correct version.

  • @Holly - Mac. Seems to be a Chrome issue - when I went to Firefox Adobe Flash was not there so i installed a newer version

    "Mac 10,3,181,5 debug version"

in case any devs happen to look in.  No idea if it will let me play the game

  • @riscy, since software is "usually" backwards compatible, you "shouldn't" have a problem with the 10.3 version and playing.
Now you mention Chrome, there seems to be intermittent problems with Chrome and Flash. You may want to stick with Firefox or Safari until Chrome works out some issues.
If you need to uninstall, being that the uninstall doesn't really work, just cuts the link, you can go to your HD/library/Internet Plug-ins/"Flash Player.plugin", where "Flash Player.plugin" is your version of plugin. you can put it in the trash and keep it there until you make sure the new version takes... and replace it if it doesn't.

Hoping 10.3 works for you riscy!

  • 10.3 *probably* won't work until there is a final/stable version. From an old thread: "[We  don't support preview/dev releases of Flash because that would be a giant pain for no real purpose: preview releases, release candidates, nightly builds ... all of those have new/different bugs and features which won't necessarily be in the final version (or even the next dev build). Constantly re-coding the game to make it work for some transient change in a single dev version of Flash would mean that we never did anything else and then we'd really suck!"

  • @roderick, thanks for the PPC port for Ubuntu- was trying to find it.
In my last response I was going to mention the processor hindrance which I believe is true.
I found someone who found a workaround - using the 10.1 plugin while installing 10.2 overtop, so as to trick the servers to see the higher version while you use the older. According to Adobe, it sounds like it depends on both processor and graphics card.
But if someone actually got 10.4 & 10.5 PPC to work with Flash 10.2 -  worth a try
Will try Ubuntu through thumb drive trial first.

  • Psst, to find out what version of Flash you're running, go here: http://beta.glitch.com/help/test/

Update: What the hell... Seems I am now running Flash v 10.3, yet under an hour ago I checked and I was on 10.2. The Chrome (Beta) update must have updated Flash too. :/

Will Glitch still work for me now, Stoot? O.o Slightly worried...

  • Oh, LOL, just checked out that link, Hburger, and it said I didn't have flash. Was freaked out for a second, and then I remembered I was on my blackberry ;)

  • We are not requiring anything other than 10.1 or higher right now (it's back to how it's been for months) -- if you're still having trouble launching the game and have 10.1, you should probably file a bug report so we can help you personally.

In the next few days we'll be requiring 10.2 for the official client, and both 10.1.102 and 10.3 users will get warnings -- HOWEVER they will be allowed to play *at their own risk* (bug reporting will be disabled).

  • @Stoot - point taken and true.
@Jono - didn't mean to start something so crazy. Oh, I mean Adobe to start something so trivial... lol - you all have been great to include 10.1 - thank you!
@riscy - never had such a great support group from devs before - contact these guys...
Posted 19 months ago by Orefye Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @stoot, I understand that, but as Orefye said, likely it is backwards compatible.  Ane what is the worst that can happen? It still might not work, so no change there.
@Jono, I had the version listed above and no joy - and I have not filed a bug report as I have previously posted in bugs about a proxy issue, and been in touch with devs via email about that as I am unsure whether it is a proxy problem or Flash problem that I am having.  Just trying to discover the cause.
@Orefye, agreed - the devs have always been really helpful and supportive.
