Duplicate player names allowed?

It appears that it's possible for two different players to have the same name in Glitch. Is this intentional?

(I'm asking because one of my friends hasn't played since the beginning, but I just saw that player name on the forums. These are two different accounts.)

I'm thinking it's possible right now and that it might not be desirable.

  • I was using the multiple characters as an example - albeit a poor one, apparently. I suppose I was mistakenly trying to understand what was being suggested in a frame that I found vaguely familiar.

AIts are not something I have used very often. After focusing my all on one character, I usually find it very hard to build a new one for the same game unless the content or classes are vastly different (using the WoW example, an Alliance character vs a Horde character on completely different servers, or a hunter vs. a shaman).

  • I love the idea of Stratems, with the house name blah von bladhey blah, etc. as an addition to your in-game non-unique name. It'd be like surnames, which sometimes change as time goes on.

  • So it'll be like a first name and last name? First time I've seen something like that. I've seen clan tags...

  • OK, I just read the whole damn thread and this is what I got out of it.
Obviously our names need some form of uniqueness because we as players want to know who's who. As I was reading the thought of Surnames came to mind. But as I kept reading better ideas were given and I think it was all elaboration on the staff post.
Everything seems straight forward to me and I don't see what all the confusion is about and i dont think it should be too hard to follow when creating an account and first character either.
USER NAME *must be unique (this is not your characters name): [textbox]
and then or later in character creation:
    CHARACTER NAME [textbox]
    seems simple enough

Now what I think the game needs is a little pop-up ID card that anyone can see. I would like it to include:
    Character name
    User name
    Level
    Address
(maybe for fun last achievement or something, guild's belonging to, maybe a passport style photo in the corner just to be funny or something - whatever goofiness we/staff can think of etc)

The player menu should give you the option to view the quick card or view the full profile.
I tried to view someone's profile this test and it kicked me right out of the game to see it rather than opening the profile in a new window. That was super annoying. Nonetheless, this would eliminate the need for user names to show in game - just look at the quick id card. done.

  • I think we should be able to pick any name we want, duplicate or not. Next to the name, in parentheses, there should be a little number indicating which X (X = name) you are. For example, say I was the third Cupcake to register: I would be Cupcake (3). This would eliminate the annoyance of having a jumble of Lollipop436s and Horse_797s--but not be as confusing as having TWO names, one in parentheses.

  • +1 for at-a-glance profiles, much like encyclopaedia entries, in game. I hate having to exit to see someones level/info or become their friend.

  • How about something like IRC NickServ? So if you use it, you get to keep your unique name. But if you're not seen for 30 days, your name gets dumped back in the name pool.

  • It's all fine and clear by me except for the parenthesis, for aesthetic reasons. I'd much rather have the at-a glance pop up mini profile.
I'm already clicking to get user info when meeting new people to see if they're at a level that might require help and it's super annoying to get the whole shabobble when all I want to know is if they're speeding on no-no or still figuring out salt.

  • I really like the current plan, it makes perfect sense. It's no different than having an outward facing nickname.

So my registered name is Travinara... maybe I want to be called Trav. So in the dev's plan Trav would show in the world and Trav (Travinara) would be what appears on my profile. If I wanted to be called Pig Nibbler, you'd see Pig Nibbler in the world and Pig Nibbler (Travinara) on my profile.

Maybe someone else wants to call themselves Trav... it's a common name, sorta. Maybe they want to dress like me too... but if you click on the Info, you'll be able to see their name is Trav (Strange Person). Some sort of easy in-world identifier would be cool... even just having the names of friends appear in a different color would do the trick (easy to pick out in a crowd). Info from game to profile has to two-click flow (and open in a new tab/window) for people to actively use it though.

Back in the days of text, I played a game with the coolest naming mechanic.... no clue how they did it. But... you started off with the option of giving yourself a nickname - which is what displayed to the world. When you ran across someone you saw whatever nickname they had or their real name if they opted not to enter one.

You could give them a nickname - like That Nice Guy. Each time you saw them after, you saw That Nice Guy... if enough people gave the same character the same nickname, it became their nickname to the world. So even people who they never met would see things like The Sleeping Person or Mean Person because enough people had called them that. More often it lead to interactions like, "Hi! I'm Joseph, people call me Joe".

I'd rather see 800 Trav's than lose the organic feel of the game than allow a bunch of numbers and special characters in names... I *might* be convinced to call someone John Nine in real life.... no way are you going to convince me to call someone John Underscore Nine Backslash Carrot Underscore Underscore Carrot. It's just an opinion, but I've seen names like those get out of hand. However, things like hyphens and apostrophes should be allowed.

I think the IP / Account / Character Restrictions fall solely in the hands of the dev's. I've seen multi's handled in a variety of ways, each has merits and detractions. One of the biggest factors is price point, and how much of the world is free, and how much by subscription only... and to what extent the benefits of subscription are versus a la carte purchasing.

Glitch *could* be a family effort in my house (weird - something in common with the kid) which means several human beings to one IP... in a different house it could mean one human being with several computers. In college we ran into a problem with a very popular game with an 'account per IP' rule - they allowed 5 paid accounts per IP... it was hilarious explaining a sorority house had That Many people suddenly playing after the house was re-wired. We got an exception, but some real world common sense has to apply.

A determined person WILL find a way to work around just about everything. A person could drive themselves crazy trying to put an end to all the possibilities. As a student, I often got around thing by keeping a separate accounts confined to the computer lab(s). The most common reason was not enough secure storage or prohibitive buying / selling rules. I'm also the sort of person who wants to 'try out' all the different combinations of a game... but only if it appears to have enough of an impact on the game play.

Just thoughts on the subjects... but I think the powers that be have got things well in hand.

  • @Travinara, well put. I agree with your post.

And, there is something interesting about the idea of a nick name sticking.
