Browser lag & other issues

I'm playing, at the moment, on a Mac running Chrome.

The game is the slowest/laggiest I've ever seen it -- so slow that I can't even type in the chat window. I am also getting repeated "This page has become unresponsive: kill or wait" error pop-ups whenever I have the game world up in a tab. Usually, this error includes ALL Glitch tabs in the listing. Doing things like opening a forum tab from the drop-down menu in game takes about 45 seconds to complete, and sometimes the game tab cannot be closed (presumably due to this slow-down).  However, the game has NOT crashed. Just grinds everything to a halt.  This happens both in a "regular" tab with my usual extensions running, in a regular tab with extensions disabled, and in an incognito window with NO extensions at all.

Are others experiencing this with Chrome on Macs? I'm curious to see how it plays tonight on my Windows machine (also with Chrome).

  • I use WIN7 and Firefox.  I have had lag for months but a cache clear and reload gets me going easily enough.  Lately (even before iMG) I seem to have much more lag but not to the point that I can't improve response with a reload.  It is sometimes inconvenient but the reload usually works fine for a while.  I believe that improving performance is an ongoing thing and we are going to have some ups and downs.  I hope that you get better response on your Mac in a timely manner (rather than "soon").

  • I am in WIN7 and Firefox, and my lag since the update is pretty extreme. I also noticed the game is now using about 200k-250k  more memory than it used to.

I have had to resort to restarting the game 1 time an hour.

  • Cricket- there have been reports of similar issues with Chrome/Mac going back awhile with dragging chat. With the unresponsive errors- do you use any 3rd party Chrome plugins? If so, try disabling them; but if you do, let us know what you use. Also, try to keep extra tabs to a bare minimum, and close when you are done with them. Keeping a second browser open for other things is preferable. I use mostly Mac/Safari for my main work in the game, but have a couple second computers (Mac and Windows) for my test players, using mostly Firefox and Chrome.

We do take note of performance, which is one reason why we ran lots of tests recently, and it's something we do keep working on.

  • Thanks guys - a cache clear & reload has not solved the issue. It's pretty persistent.

Kevbob - As I mentioned, I've run the game with extensions on, with all extensions disabled, and in an extension-free incognito window -- there seems to be no change. Extensions I use (which are currently disabled on Glitch.com) are AdBlock Plus, Ghostery, Facebook Disconnect & Gmail checker.

This machine ran Glitch more smoothly for me than my home (windows) machine prior to the changeover, so it seems to be somehow changeover/new-UI related.

  • My apologies for missing the detail, Cricket. A suggestion- click the Q and P letters concurrently (which brings up a small diagnostic panel in the lower right) when you are in game in various places, and take note of the FPS and memory numbers to see where things go for you. (Clicking the same letters will hide it.)

  • Cool - did not know about the Q/P trick! Will have a look, and then compare to home machine later tonight.

    Thanks again. :)

  • Just to note for reference, so I don't forget when I look later at home.

    On the Mac/Chrome:
    FPS consistent at between 20-30
MEM starts out at about 220, then steadily rises as I carry out actions, move streets, etc. (The highest I saw was 500, but that was only over about 4 minutes of play.)

This is with the game in it's own browser window, no other tabs, addons disabled. Numbers were similar in an add-on free incognito window. Still got "unresponsive page" errors regularly.

Possibly the strangest thing is that as the game slows, attempting to close the tab or browser results in a lock-up, with the game screen greyed out to show the "WAIT! You were just about to win!" message. The last time this happened, I had to force quit because Chrome wouldn't respond at all.

  • To compare - looking at things on my Windows machine with Chrome, the game runs MUCH more smoothly. Everything seems to be working as intended, including mouseovers, tab & pop-up behavior, & chat box responsiveness. The numbers I get from the QP console are not significantly different from those I got on the Mac.

  • This new topic is of possible interest to this thread

(Not that there isn't room for other improvements or other things we will be looking at, but we are investigating the specifics highlighted in that one.)
