Penpersonship II idea... Book/Notepad/Journal/whatever you wanna call it recipe.

I made a reply on a post earlier by Ximenez and i wanted to expand upon an idea/epiphany I had earlier about a possible Bookmaking skill addition and related item inclusion. The idea came out of the desire for a UI notepad option. Instead of UI based, I came up with a skill/item based idea that offers unlimited community possibilities.

I suggest an inclusion of a high rank of Penpersonship II (P2) for the ability to craft though a recipe of Book items. These would be crafted from several pieces of paper and perhaps a few other items such as as planks or flowers to create these books. I took book-making in college so I could see everything from flowers, leaves, wood, etc being very viable natural materials.

• Recipes could vary in order to give different color 'cover' icons for individual books that are made. These colors would need additional materials to create the book - eg. Purple Flower + base materials to create a Book with a purple cover.
• Perhaps the default name of the item could be a 'Journal' instead of 'Notepad' or 'Book' which would fall into line with cuteness that most Glitcher expect. (I dunno why, i just think 'Journal' sounds cuter and denotes a larger variety of uses. I think of 'journal' and many connotations come to mind.)
• Should be one item per bag slot to emphasize uniqueness of each 'book'.
• Give the crafted 'book' the ability to be 'renamed' via menu option, much like bags can be now. This would allow titles to be given not just for organizational purposes but creative ones as well.
• Should be non-vendorable but auctionable, dropable and giftable.

What could use a book for? Consider these options:

• In-game Notepad (the most basic choice)
• Auction Economic Spreadsheet
• Glitchian Crush Diary (probably don't want to drop this accidentally)
• Haiku Collections
• Future Skill Planner
• Alchemical Experiment Notations
• Recording Paranoid Nonsensical Ramblings from Bubble Trees
• Crafting Supplies Lists (I find myself forgetting things all the time that I need to procure)
• Wiki Writing Journal
• Glitchian Novellas*

* This one in particular sparks my imagination. I can perfectly imagine a secondary market of book-swapping between Glitchers of personally written books of stories, musings, haikus, poetry and riddles either through gift-giving or auctioning. I can imagine Glitcher independent print-makers going into business for themselves selling their writings on the Auction (and dealing with the frustrations of copyright infringement and pirating, no less) or just trading amongst friends. I can imagine the publication of pulp serials by various Glitcher authors. Basically, this one little skill and recipe could unlock an entire other facet of this fascinating world that is available to those desiring to embark upon it.

Thoughts?

  • Great Idea!
And maybe, about the Glitchian Novellas idea, there could be an achievement called "Glitchian Novelist", and to earn it you must write a novel in one of your books (Long or short), then let another glitch read it, and there could be a thumbs up, so-so, and thumbs down options for the glitch who reads it, and if you got a peticular number of thumbs-ups, you would get the achievement, and maybe unlock a "Novelist" skill, where you can craft longer or shorter books to fit your writing needs.

  • Selling books to other people sounds actually pretty awesome. But how do we prevent people from just copying down whatever was written, and passing it off as their own?

  • Love this idea , i would be running after Lord Bacon all day to get his signature in my "History of Giants: Figments of the Imagination" series that he'll have to publish due to his creativity in the forums about the calendar

  • @Lridona, that's a really good question, hence my comment about " frustrations of copyright infringement and pirating." When i was thinking of this, and jotting things down, this thought did come to mind. At first it was just a seemingly justifiable thought but then it bothered me that one of the first things that came to mind in all of this had to deal with such a nasty thing as theft. I found myself thinking about a forum post that someone made about stolen blocks.

It's a good question and to be honest, i'm not entirely sure what the answer would be about that. I guess I just assumed most authors might also make related forum posts about their work so it might be publicly known what their works are. That is of course hoping that one day the Glitch Forums actually have some organization to them. I would give my pinkie toe for thread stickys.

@Karma, he is an extremely talented writer, isn't he? I know exactly what you mean!

  • Yah, this is a great idea! it shouldn't be difficult, there are already many means for storing certain items, why not paper?

  • Bumping with a big +1.
Because I would love to operate the Library or Ur once the game launches. Make it a group hall.

  • That would be a great idea!!

Expanding on the idea of a Library....

Idea 1. You pay a fee of currants (Say, 500) to get your book "Published" into the library. It is there for people to read and borrow, (If needed). To borrow, you may need a skill (BA3 might give you the ability to borrow books??) So, to borrow you pay a small fee (Say, 50 currants per book). And then you get to keep that for a glitch week, and it will automatically be deducted from your backpack. Once 10 people borrow it, the Creator of the book will start earning currants from the book being borrowed.

Idea 2. Basically the same as Idea 1, but it is all free.

    Just my 2 currants

  • I am absolutely IN LOVE with this idea!

  • I really love this idea Jackie Paper! I'd love to have the option of using a variety of art paper for the leaves and cover as well as different binding options. Perhaps there could be a way of selecting typeface and glitchy clip-art as well.

  • i love the idea of penpersonship II.
you will need a certain amount of papers to make notepad, journals and more!
then you can write in them and when they are full, drop them on the ground for people to read.
you could also draw a picture on one of the pages!

    i would like that :)

  • I love the idea of bookmaking and the idea of libraries too. I REALLY love the idea of binding TP scripts because I use those and their comments to remind me where cool things are. A teleportation book would be my journal. I don't really like the idea of the pages disappearing though. It would be nice if once a TP script was bound into a book, it would give you the option to "teleport and copy" if you have a spare piece of paper on you. That way your book grows instead of shrinks. Also, a rebind verb seems essential so you could add to or modify your book for an energy cost...

  • With all the requests for a notepad UI to be introduced, why did I not ever think to just use paper and leave notes to myself all over my house?

I like the idea of a library though so I could read others' stories and poems and whatnot.
