Open Letter To All Beta Greeters

Seeing as how we find ourselves on the cusp of rebirth I have something that I'd like to share. It's been so long since my first day in Ur- my memory of that time is long since gone. Yeah, that rivers run dry. I wish I could though.

I think about it often. I don't believe that I was met by a greeter. If I was, I didn't recognize it for what it was. An opportunity to get to know someone who had been down the road and could steer me in the right direction. Someone who I could have became friends with- relied on when I had questions. I wonder if I blew it? Maybe someone did try to help me out and I told them to sod off thinking they were a bot. I hope that's not the case. If I did, I apologize. I'm not that same guy anymore. I grow a little more each day. I become a little more refined. I'm certainly not a finished product by any means.

I'd like to cling to the hope that if I did indeed blow you off and offend you, that you overlooked the incident and we became friends down the line in spite of our shaky start. I know what a tough gig it is, and you do it out of love.

Thank all of you Greeters, past and present, for all that you do.

  • +1 Malo!

I am about 99% sure I thought the greeter was a bot when I first was imagined. So young, so foolish was I!

  • Me too! they finally said goodbye to me and I was like... "wait your not a bot?" and they just laughed. i felt terrible!

  • I don't remember being greeted either. When I first entered the world the only thing talking to me was the magic rock. I figured I was stuck in tutorial mode or something. It was only when I saw another player run by me that I realized it was the real deal.

  • +1 Malo and I feel exactly the same way.  I don't recall a greeter and I too hope if there was one I didn't offend them.

  • Wow, thanks,

We get bot jokes a lot, its fun to play along. We love meeting all of you.

  • They didn't have greeters back in the old days when I joined. Things have changed, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the tutorial has changed too! Now if only the game will open so I can do that...

  • Three months ago, I rejected having a greeter. Today, knowing what I know now, I would do differently.

  • You're welcome, and thank you all for being such awesome Glitches! :)

@Kare Bear: hehe, it's OK! Lots of newbies think we're bots, and they're surprised to find out that we're real players.

@Vermilion (and others who didn't get the option): When did you join Glitch? There was a period of time when the greeting program wasn't active for a while.

  • I didn't even have the option to have a greeter :( kinda wish I did cause it sounds so fun!

  • I don't think I was greeted?  If I was, Dagnabbit Rabbit distracted me! :P

Either way, it's a really great thing to have in game now.

  • Thanks, malo. Your words are very much appreciated. =)
Yeah, some new players think the greeters are bots, so they say things that maybe aren't so nice. Part of the greeter training is learning to deal with things like that, or the players that just don't talk or respond at all. We learn not to take things like that personally, and we're supportive of each other when it happens.
Then we also get the new players who are so eager to learn, so excited to try all the new things... it makes us forget about the greets that weren't so great! I honestly couldn't name one person who thought I was a bot, though I know there have been several! But I could list quite a few who've been excited, eager, and funny!!

  • Oh what fun we can have when they open the doors for real....

Prankster, "Hello Noobie Glitch, you have been chosen by the Giants to undertake a special secret mission".
    Noob," I have?"
Prankster, "Yes, take this special potato to ...(insert distant location)... and donate it at the Shrine you find there."
    Noob, "Ohhhhh wow.... okay."
Prankster, "You receive a special bonus for doing this and will gain 5000 XP... Good Luck."

Then Prankster hands over the potato and disappears in a puff of TP smoke.

  • I didn't get a greeter. BUT, I think it was malo who randomly told me about mining a rock all the way down and gave me like 5 Earthshakers :)
Posted 15 months ago by La_La Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I feel the same!  What a jaded bunch we are...

I'm guessing that there aren't going to be many greeters around during this next test...  But if there are, I'll happily spend more time talking to you this time round!

(Actually, I'm still not sure you all aren't bots and I'm the only real person playing this game).

  • my greeter said 'hi mom' so I knew she wasn't a bot. tee hee

  • {{{Malo}}}
I was greeted last reset, by one of the devs. Actually, I'm guessing they showed up because I was taking so much time they thought I was in trouble. Before that, I think it was just the brain and the magic rock. Memory's a bit fuzzy because it was all so different and new. I don't think anyone has ever been greeted by a bot for reals in Ur, that's what makes Glitch so special.

If you go way back in the forums, you'll see that the greeter program, in large part, came from players, who saw that new arrivals could get the best taste of what Glitch might be like from a real person.

  • Malo: Don't sweat it. I sure they forgave you after just a few visits to the therapist. :)

    But seriously, great heartfelt message.

@bludwaggie: The smartest bots know exactly when to say "hi mom".

  • I'm pretty sure I didn't have a greeter.

But I did have someone give me a bag full of lots of goodies fairly early (2 stacks of meat, a stack of spinach, a stack of cloud 11 smoothies, and a stack of common crudite).

I know it was for a quest, but that was an awfully helpful bag for a young glitch.

  • @Varaeth: I joined pretty late, sometime in June I think. I know the game was up in January so I'm sure they had the greeting program up in June, I just got unlucky somehow. I remember when I saw that first player run by me I sent an IM to a friend in excitement.

  • I was given the option but didn't take it as I was still finding my feet in the game, it was a few levels later that I wished I still had the option.

I can't wait to start playing again, open SESAME!

  • See, this is why I want to be a beta greeter. I didn't get one myself, but I do remember Fokian Fool doing the "mining run-through and free Earthshakers" bit for me as well. It was quite helpful. <3

  • @Vermilion: At that time, the option to summon a greeter was only available at certain times - you may have joined at a time when it was turned off.

Currently, the option is always available as long as there are greeters ready.

  • I also made the bot mistake (said nothing, blundered along on my merry way). I felt so foolish when I realized. It would be a nice touch to let new players know to watch for a real greeter when they start.

  • I don't remember having a greeter, but I probably would have been too shy to talk to one anyway!  It takes me a while to feel comfortable, and now I know exactly how awesome the glitchen community is so I chat and comment freely, but when I was new, I probably would have taken off running in the other direction!  :)

  • I definitely thought the greeter was a bot. I agree with Munchma's Idea.

  • My greeter was Anilover1.

    how it went down:
    Anilover1: hi!
Me: (I was thinking who is this person? So I said nothing and moved around, jumped up some ledges [I was at Heights Start same as this reset :D])
Anilover1: (jumped to a ledge just below me) Can you talk?
Me: (thinking: maybe if I say hi she'll stop following me) hi (then I jumped off the ledge and click on a random street sign)

    I was so nice XD

  • Heh. Yes, Greeters do get loads Of "Are you a bot?s" and runners(inside term for someone who just runs past the Greeter to the signpost). But it's fun at times, when the newbie cooperates.

  • "I was greeted by Nanookie, and it was wonderful."

    aw....*dab *dab*  :D

Strange as it may sound, greeting is just about my favorite part of the game...although I was pleasantly surprised to find my dopamine receptors were VERY receptive to playing after this current reset (I have done more than one).  I thought for sure they would just ignore Glitch altogether this time around.

But even if that were the case, I would still love greeting.  I don't even care if you think I am a bot! I might actually be a bot and don't know it!  This might all be a soundstage, with hidden cameras trained on me, filming The Very Special Episode: Nanookie's Ascension

  • Yes! The Cat Face was my greeter, and she is awesome! It's funny when I run into her in Ur since it's pretty rare that it happens. She remembered me and we had a short chat. Thank you!

  • Thank you very much!  As a Greeter, I realize that the new players are just learning about Glitch.  There are so many things to learn.  I have met several new Glitches and I am a new Greeter so I am learning too.  You can't get it wrong, don't forget that.  You can make mistakes, we all do that.  So far most of the people I meet as a Greeter are just anxious to start playing.  I understand that.  It is my wish for you that you will enjoy playing Glitch as much as I do and will return again and again.

  • I was so busy looking at stuff in the game window, and trying to teach my glitch to do stuff that I didn't notice the chat for ages, and then it took me even longer to work out how to reply. Half the time the people who tried to speak to me had logged off by the time I attempted a response.

  • I've been so lax on greeting duties the last two tests, looking forward to doing so more again, especially after reading this post finally. malo, and all, what a sweet thread; I hadn't had time to read it till now. My favorite "not a bot" moment was when I made a bunch of typos and the person finally realized I wasn't a bot and warmed up and talked to me :). I'm with Zany way above; while many folks run by us or just say, "I wanted to see what would happen if I accepted" or are just happy to have us say hi and run off, there are some truly awesome times where the new player and the greeter gel, and it's Glitch magic. But even when that doesn't happen (which is most of the time), I love that the players and staff are committed to giving a warm welcome to anyone who would like it. Sweet sweetness.

  • Glitch is my second MMOG.  I loved helping newbs in my first and love doing so in Glitch.  I didn't get a Greeter when I joined (mid-April) but I had lots of friends who very patiently helped me out.  I'm a new Greeter and really excited about it.  I hope that more beginning players take advantage of Greeting.  Thanks to malo and the rest who have taken the time to write words of appreciation.

  • What a lovely thread! I got an offer for a greeter when I started, but was so overwhelmed that I'm pretty sure I had brain-lag. I just kinda wandered around and goggled for a while. I started having more questions around the time I hit level 3 or so. It's so nice that the greeter program exists, though. Until tonight, I didn't realise that the greeters were good old game players, just like the rest of us (albeit specially selected for being awesome!). And on top of that, beyond the point at which a young Glitch is able to get help from a greeter, even your average Glitch-on-the-street was helpful and kind if they thought I seemed confused.

Skwid, if The Cat Face vouches for The Cat Face then there is a 37-59% chance that it is true.
