Histories of Ur - A Giant Love Story - Chapter 7

Please be gentle I cry easily. Anyways cause I'm impatient I'm gonna take a chance and post this here.

Histories of Ur

Long ago the Giants were not all of one mind, indeed they were quite the opposite, each thinking only in their own head and building their own worlds.

Cosma who favoured the sky built the world of Ix, into it she wove sunsets and stars, many many stars, for she had a love of their soft twinkling light and it pleased her greatly to fill her world with their soft glow. Upon her land great yet elegant beasts strode stopping often to lift their heads and gaze at the heavens, for them she built elegant staiways so that they might climb up and be closer to her, on occassions she would reach down to gently pat them, smiling happily at their obvious delight.

Zille did not favour the skys, his love was for mining, he delved deep into rock and thus Ilmenskie caverns grew in his world. Each mine was filled with untold quantities of precious stones and gems, but more than this the mines were alive, the rocks themselves sentient and like children eager to learn, Zille taught them all he could and delighted in their acquired knowledge.

Not all the Giants were so industrious, Pot for one saw no reason to work hard, he liked fun, relaxing and parties. His world of Shimla Mirch filled with ideas that drifted around looking for somewhere to settle, when they found no place to rest they burst into sparkles and were know as fireflies. Pot brought soft soils to his world thinking that when the weary partygoers fell down to sleep they had soft ground to rest upon. So great were the parties that over time the ground became saturated with spilt drinks, in places pools and peat bogs formed, but Pot saw only here was fuel for BBQs and so the wine flowed and all partied on regardless.

In the early days the Giants happily shared visions of the eleven different worlds, marvelling at each others creativity and the magnifcence of the new worlds they were creating, They happily shared ideas and made suggestion but as the worlds grew they discovered new unique thoughts were scarce to come by. It was then that the Giants grew competetive wanting their world to outshine the others, disquiet grew, each giant seeking to better the other.

Zille sent out flocks of Batterflies to try to learn what the other Giants were planning, Cosma built a giant telescope to spy on her fellow Giants.even the gentle Humbaba began to create hoards of Pigs, Chickens and Butterflies, hoping to hide his world of Groddle Forest beneath their huge numbers. Pot built a tower then forgot why he had built it, sadly the other Giants were afraid of what it might be and redoubled their efforts

As the Giants began to guard and hide their thoughts from each other, jealousy and suspicion grew, small ideas were stolen, some were lost and fell down to a dark and dismal realm the Giants called pergatory ignored these ideas began to grow, they gained wings and sharp beaks, they became the rooks within them the Giants new hatred built into malice and that grew until the Giants saw that here was a powerful new weapon and with that they launched the Great War.

Worlds that had once been beautiful beyond compare were wrecked by a force of destruction that only Giants can wield, in short much was lost before the Giants realised what they had done. Try as they might they could not destroy the weapon they had created, it was weak but left alone it could gather strength anywhere that was neglected and unloved.

Fearing they would lose what remained of their precious worlds and full of remorse they decided that they would war no more but would work together to build a harmonious world, so gathering together the fragments of their seperate worlds they formed a unique shared conciousness one between all eleven Giant minds and then together they thought and thought and thought until at last a tiny speck formed and the new world of Ur was born

  • Oh,  Faereluth!!  What a delightful read!!  And when you wrote, "and full of remorse they decided that they would war no more but would work together to build a harmonious world" I was reminded of a round we used to sing at Girl Scout camp...

Let every man 'neath his vine and fig tree
now live in peace an unafraid
And into plowshares turn their swords
Nations shall learn war no more

I can hear the harmonies!!  :)

  • They would do well to incorporate this into the actual game mythos. It works so well. Wonderful use of the imagined circumstances and the actual game mechanics to create a uniquely Glitch-ian fable!

  • This is completely lovely. And weirdly resonant in points of the documents I have in front of me… It is  one fine beautifully written theory, though, Faereluth. I wouldn't be surprised if a couple of inhabitants in the world came to believe this was the one true story of creation... I wouldn't be surprised at all.

  • Awesome, Faeri! I loved it. I think the weapon shall be known as 'Tree Poison'. A new war is starting, Poison VS Trees. Unfortunately for all of us, the trees are losing now.

  • Thank you all for your kind words, I was very humbled to recieve such praise.

@ Kitkatcat, actually the weapon I was referred to were the Rooks, these terrible beasts who attack the thoughts of the giants trying to destroy their creativity.

Those weilding tree poison belong in a different tale altogether, certainly too new to be part of the Histories of Ur maybe a Latterday Heros and Villains, tho much research would be required before writing on this.

    Chapter 1
Alph sighed loudly, his gaze falling once more on the lovely Grendaline, there she sat a shadow of her former self, her face etched in sorrow, try as he might he had failed yet again, for she had taken one look at his new creation and laid it in the pile with all the others.

He had hoped the pretty blue butterfly would have lifted her spirits, especially when he had carefully fashioned it to bless her gentle touch with milk and to enjoy singing. He closed his eyes for a moment remembering that she had a beautiful voice, one that in the early years had blessed their worlds with gentle lilting songs that had lifted their spirits and allowed them to craft great works, but the lovely Giantess had not even held the butterfly long enough to notice.

    "My poor Grendaline . . . " he whispered "
    I will find a way . . . somehow I will . . ."

He knew what ailed her, all the giants did, of them only she alone had lost everything from her world, not one piece remained after the great war and although the others had tried their best to convince her it didnt matter, even offering her some of their precious pieces, the sweet young giantess had fallen into depression and was slowly fading before their very eyes.

    "Tomorrow . . . " Alph declared
"I will fashion a new thing and she will be happy once more"

The other Giants nodded for they wanted to believe their friend but each knew Alph had tried many times and each time he had failed.

In the morning Alph rose early and strode purposely to his workbench. For a while he sat deep in thought . . . he lifted a quill and began to doodle, trying and retrying to create a thing for his dear Gendaline and each time he felt he was close he would look again and see it wasn't good enough.

The other giants began to gather, this was the longest time that Alph had sat without exclaiming he had the very thing. Could it be even he was out of new ideas? And if that were so was there no hope of saving the sweet Grendaline?

As the time passed the other giants began to get nervous and slowly they started to make suggestions and offer ideas of their own. At first Alph tried to ignore them but after a few hours he was more than a little annoyed,
"How do you expect me to work my best with all this racket?" He roared. No sooner had the words left his mouth then he regretted them, for in truth he knew the others were only trying to help for they like him loved Grendaline and wanted her to be well again, but it was too late his words struck the hearts of his friends and they rose as one and left him to his work.

He tried to carry on regardless but his thoughts kept returning to the distressed faces of his friends, so eventually he reluctantly downed tools and went to seek them out. After much appologising and soothing and yes listening to their suggestions he returned to his work, another day was almost over, he was so very tired but perhaps because of this his thoughts grew wild and wonderful and almost without realising it he fashioned his new gift for his beloved Grendaline.

Excited he took it to show the others. they stared and smiled and when it moved they laughed and all thought it was the very thing to make Grendaline happy, convinced that he would succeed this time he lifted his new creation into his hands and strode off to where Grendaline always sat. When he reached the far place to his dismay he found that she had gone.

He searched high and low and called her name but to no avail, he could not find her, not even a trace, she was gone and Alph distraght returned to the other giants. When they saw him they knew at once something was wrong but when he fell on his knees head in his hands they knew something terrible had happened, it was still a shock when he finally manage to tell them, our dearest Grendaline has gone.

    Chapter 2.
They huddled together holding and supporting each other, sorrowing at their great loss and silently fearing for their friend, might Alph too fall into depression and fade into nothingness? As they sat holding each other and thinking it occured to them that Grendaline may not have faded at all but instead had fallen down, far far down into . . . Purgatory!!

All the Giants feared purgatory for it was there that the great weapon had been born, created from all that was negative and bad, it had festered and grown forboding and powerful, fed by loathing and negelect,. They named it Rook. It was this weapon which weilded in the Great War, had almost destroyed them all, The Rook had been banished to the far reaches of Ur in the hopes they would one day find a way to destroy it, Purgatory however had almost been forgotten but now now it seemed much to the Giants dismay iit might have claimed the lovely Grendaline.

Alph declared his intention to rescue his beloved, the others protesting he could not go alone, however Alph would not let them go with him. For he explained without Grendaline and himself their thoughts will be weaker, if the Rook should discover this it might return. So it was decided that the other Giants would remain to defend their thoughts. Alph realised it would be wise not go alone so using his new creation he crafted more until there were many, but the others protested still, for these were small and would soon be overwhelmed by the sadness and despair that lurked in the deep dark paths on the road to Hell.

Thinking on this Alph began to fashion a new thing, which he called a music box.

"See how they like the tune it plays"

Alph smiled as his new creations danced and waved to the new sound of the music box, but after all the Giants had tried it to test that the new creatures did indeed find the music good they realised with dismay that Alphs new creations were bored with the tune.

It was Tii who thought up the solution, what they needed were more music boxes and to play them randomly, then Alphs little guys would not get bored so quickly. Taking a quill he began to scribble upon a scrap of paper, one of his better inventions, after a few moments he declared they would need 21 music boxes. The Giants set to work and within the day all the boxes had been created and tested once only. Alph was now ready to set out to rescue Grendaline.

    Chapter 3

Alph was ready but there were more things that needed to be done before he could set out to rescue the fair Grendaline. Ur was still very small and rather delicate being as it was made of fragments. It occurred to the Giants that one of them going down onto the world would risk breaking it apart, what was needed was a form that was small, in fact miniscule so thats what Alph became and in their thoughts they named this new form Giant Looks Incredibly Tiny CHanged which was quite a thoughtful so they shortened it to Glitch.

Of course now that Alph was so small he couldnt carry all the music blocks so the Giants thought of a thing into which he could place them. They called it Bring All Gathered or bag for short. Their final idea was one to help Alph lead his creations, realising small as he was made him harder to spot among the many they fashioned a command to follow.

Now that everything was ready, Alph set off with his ceations following down one of the long stairways in IX. Across his back he carried the bag filled with the music blocks, in his heart he carried his love for the young Grendaline and the determination to do whatever it took to rescue her. The day was fair for the Giants thoughts were close and kindly.

Progress through the lands of IX went smoothly save for one stop when a few of the troop had to be rescued from an unseen hole, luckily Alph was able to drag them into his bag and then release them back into the group. That drama over they moved on down into Groddle Forest.

Groddle Forest prooved a little tricky to navigate for the troops often stopped following wandering off to chase piggies and butterflies or stopping to admire the tall bean tree or the pink blossomed cherry, Alph had frequently to stop and run around gathering them all together again before the journey could continue. Little wonder then that by noon he was exhausted, something the Giant had never experienced before. Lifting his thoughts he spoke to the other Giants questioning them on what this new feeling was and more importantly how he was to overcome it.

The others soon discovered that as a Glitch Alphs' strength was being diminished, the very effort of moving through the world of Ur was sapping his energy. What he needed was to replenish it and it occurred to them that eating might be the answer, It was suggested he try eating the beans and cherries from the trees close by,

    "But . . . " , warned Spriggan,

"Such gifts will need a proper thank you, please pet my trees and water them."

"And with what shall I water them?" Alph retorted grumpily, for now his mood was dropping too

Whilst he waited for her to reply Alph pulled out one of the music blocks and began to play it, the troops danced and waved and Alph began to smile again. Feeling happier he took a few of the beans and cherries and ate them, gently patting the trees to thank them for their harvest. The trees seemed happy for the Glitchs' soft touch but soon they started to complain that they were thirsty. Alph could have moved on but he was a gentle hearted Giant and decided instead to wait for Spriggan and the others to solve the watering problem.

Back in their realm of thought the other Giants worked trying to fashion a means by which trees might be watered, without Alph to guide them squabbles soon developed, each Giant sure they had the perfect answer, Pot for one felt sure he was right for hadn't he invented a small container that you could carry liquid in, his beer can would he was sure work as well if filled with water, stepping away from the group he gathered one of his precious cans and tho it pained him most horribly he thought the liquid inside from beer to water, he was amazed that by some miracle it worked. Happy to have achieved something on his own he was about to send it down to Alph, deliberately ignoring the others who were loudly debating their own inventions. When they caught wind of what he was doing, large hands tried to tug the can away but Pot remained resolute, this time he would not leave it to others, this time he would supply the answer.

Of course by the time the water can reached Alph it no longer resembled the neat can Pot had fashioned, instead it had a long tube spout where one of the giants had grabbed it atop which sat a pig like snout where another had slapped it and on its other side a loop where two had tried to wrestle it from Pot. The other giants fell silent when they saw what they had done, after all this was to aid Alph and now their squabbles had ruined the water can. Alph however was not so sure it was ruined he carefully held the loop and slowly tipped the can, the water rushed up the spout and spurted out the snout and lo the tree sighed happily to be watered so gently.

    "It works Pot" he laughed,

"It works a treat, the trees love it, hear how happy they are"

Pot smiled realising that doing something for someone else made him feel very good indeed.

Having watered petted and harvested all the nearby trees Alph set off once more seeking a way down for he knew that somewhere below Ur his love was waiting for him, he could scarce contain his joy when he imagined showing her the amazing water can. How it would delight her, for she would once more hear the sound of running water.

    Chapter 4

On and on through Groddle Forest Alphs journey continued and although he and the troops search dilegently no way down could be found. They thought they had found a way when they reached the great Blue Mountain Bore. It was soon discovered that although it was indeed underground it was just a tunnel and as such it was a huge disappointment to Alph. He searched through switchback and and all through Strucote Stacks, he tried this place and that and then the other, but still he found no way into the depths of Ur. The troops began to complain asking him to play for them, for a while he tried but there were many troops and soon Alph was tired besides stopping to play meant time was wasting. It had been several days since Grendaline went missing, he felt he must continue or lose her forever, So Alph got to his feet and carried on and to keep his troops happy he sang,

    Oh Grendaline Oh Grendaline
    Oh wherefore art tho Grendaline,
I will endure hunger and sorrow
To spend with you a fair tomorrow
Beyond the day we've yet to see
I dream of us and all we'll be
Fear not sweet Grendaline for soon
We'll hug beneath a fair Ur moon.

Now somwhow in the twist of Giant minds Ur changed and where Ilmenskie had once been Shimla lay in its stead, so although Alph believed he was leading his troops to the caves he ended up much to his surprise in the swampy lands that had once been the playground where Giants partied and much revelry was had.

The old marshes had changed a lot since their move, gone was the playful air replaced with a cold dampness that chilled Alphs Glitch body, he shivered and wished he had warmth to wrap himself in, he asked his troops to huddle round, and they did but they too were cold and did little to help. he tried to imagine warm things, like awesome stew and hot mabish coffee, but as yet these did not exsist so Alph contented himself with a few cherries and a sniff of warm butterfly milk.

Wandering on past the remenants of the old and the lost Alph came eventually to the tangled jungles of vines and thorny briars, these brambles Alph had never seen before and he found to his dismay that as he tried to pass through them they clung to him, tearing at his glitch skin and forcing him to walk ever slower until he could move no further. Angry at this new hinderance he began to struggle calling to his troops to help, at first they stood by unsure what help was and even how they could help, muttering between themselves they slowly closed in around Alph. They too felt the thorny briars trying to scratch and tear but the troops unlike Alph were armoured with strong shells and sharp claws and it soon occurred to them to cut through the annoying binds and eventually they freed their leader and carried him to where the thickets were no more.

At last he was free to continue, but something was very wrong. He didn't realise that a poison was seeping in with every nick and scratch, it did not occur to him that his strength was slowly being sapped. It was with some great dismay he realised his thoughts no longer touched the other Giants. Although he was surrounded by his crab army he suddenly felt alone and very frightened and yes a hint of the dismay Grendaline had felt began to grow in Alphs thoughts.

He began to cry out but who would hear . . .

    Chapter 5

Nine Giants reached down with their collective thoughts seeking their friend Alph, Tii muttering that if they had not made him into a Glitch he would not now be lost, but protested Humbaba if he had not been a Glitch we may have lost Ur, Lem tried to rally them, we must find him, if not we will be weaker and the Rook will sense this, now come on one last sweep, he is here some place all together we can find him . . . but protested Pot, I'm tired . . . thirsty and I need my powder fix . . . Tii roared angrily I thought we agreed you would give THAT up . . . the arguments began again until Humbaba and Friendly finally managed to calm things reminding the others that Alph might need their help.

Below in the dark damp lands of Shimla Mirch Alph lay stricken by poison, he was too weak to move, but his thoughts drifted slowly weaving over bogs and between vines, the troops finding no urge to follow Alph began to follow his thoughts, away they drifting back up to Groddle Forest leaving poor Alph alone and unprotected.

Humbuba found them, she recognised they were Alphs troops and with gentleness started to question the Crabs, they however were reluctant to supply any information for not only had they nothing to follow they had no music boxes and noone to play them. They moaned they did not like the forest for it was bright and sunny and they preferred cool and damp. Humbaba suggested returning to the marshes but the Crabs complained bitterly that the vines and the soft ground were not to their taste. It was Zille who eventually suggested they might like the mines of IImelskie, The crabs listened and liked the idea of cold hard rocks, of crystalline features and dark damp deeps.

A poll was taken, a show of claws, they agreed, they would tell what they knew in exchange for being allowed to live in the caves and the promise that they could request to hear a Music Box should anyone pass by with one, the Giants were not sure about the promise but it seemed fair if improbable so they agreed, besides it seemed to them they had little choice they needed to know what had happened to Alph.

Thus the Giants learned that Alph lay stricken somewhere in Shimla Mirch. All eyes at once turned to Pot hoping for some extra insight from the original creator of that realm. However much to their dismay Pot had somehow managed to imbibe the powder he so craved and was now laying prone in a corner and giggling helplessly to himself. When he was once again challenged by Tii he jumped up and joined the others and much to their surprise his thoughts flooded out. They were wild and feverish and they came fast, it was all the others could do to keep up.

We must create another Glitch, hush don't argue I know none of us can go but we have no time to imagine another creature even if we could, which we can't because Alph does that and he is not here and so we must, but we can't , there's no time to lose, so it will have to be something we have imagined before and it can't be a butterfly cause they have like, umm they have milk, yeah and you can sniff it like my powder except it doesn't give you a buzz, oh but its okay cause butterflies like to be massaged and . . .

    *Pot think straight* snapped Tii

Well so it must be a Glitch, but it cant be just any glitch it need to be Small, and . . .

*Glitches are small Pot dearest reminded Friendly.

Yes small and ummm Trustworthy, because we need it to do what we ask and not run off and do things for others like you know . . .

*Don't say it . . . * Humbaba shivered nervously as she tried to shake the word from her head before it formed.

Rocks . . . we don't want it running off to talk to the rocks. Oh . . . Oh Tenacious, it must stick to its task, no getting side tracked by butterflies or worse . . .

*Hmm Pot calling the . . . * Sneered Tii but never got to finish the sentence due to a poke from Lem.

*He's onto something lets quickly do this before . . . you know before Pot loses it*

Lem glanced around at the others who nodded their agreement. So it was the giants formed their minds together. Reaching beyond and into creation and amongst the haphazard and the abnormal and to some degree the wild turmoil that was Pots thoughts and slowly imagined a new Glitch.

The Giants looked over their new creation collectively feeling rather disappointed, It was Cosma who spoke first

*Pot what was it you said we wanted . . . are you sure THIS is it?*

Small and ummm small . . . yes yes * muttered Pot trying his best to focus.

*Glitches are small Pot dearest reminded Friendly.

Tender . . . Tendrils . . . ten ten ten tumm Tii tum lala Lem

Friendly sighed as she watched Pot slip into a deep powder induced slumber

*I think the word was tenacious, well little Glitch we can only hope that you are, hmm I think we need to . . .*

    *Wait, * interrupted Spriggan

*Pot said something more, now what was it, oh oh trustworthy that was it the Glitch must be trustworthy too.

*And I'm sure it will be* continued Friendly,

*Now as I was saying we need to teach you a few things before we send you on a very important mission* She turned back to the Small Glitch who gazed up wide eyed having just awoken and being just a little unsure what or where it was.

    *What must I do?*

Friendly and Humbaba agreed to teach the Glitch what it needed to know to survive on Ur. Meanwhile the others Giants had problems to solve, one being how would they hear the Glitch once it was down on Ur for it had occurred to them that unlike Alph this little Glitch would not share their collective thoughts. They would need a way for it to protect itself from the cold in the swamps and from the dreaded thorny briars and most of all they needed to think of something that would restore Alphs' strength. It was a busy time for the Giants . . . well except for Pot who slumbered noisily in a heap.

  • Chapter 6

Stoot stood under the gaze of the nine Giants feeling a little overwhelmed, you would too with a multitude of eyes staring at you, but I digress, he was charged with the task of going down onto Ur a world imagined and to rescue a Giant named Alph, who the others had explained, or rather they hadn't was a glitch like him only not like him, as he was truely a giant which Stoot was not, no indeed he was more a tiny speck of a Giant which was all very confusing but in any case it was clear that these Giants required him to rescue one of their own or possibly two for it was said another by the name of Grendaline was also missing.

They had gifted Stoot several things, a watering can which he understood was used to water trees, which, if he would pet them, would reward him with cherries. Cherries he was told are good to eat. He was also given a hoe, this they had explained was for clearing the ground, he wasnt sure what exactly he should clear the ground of, but hoped it would be something he could eat. He was also given an axe, this was a last minute gift from Humbaba who had realised he might need some way to clear the briars as he would not have the crab army that had helped Alph.

They had placed these tools along with some food and drink into a bag, into this they added a music block and finally and most importantly a small phial of something called antidote which he was to administer to Alph, the Giants had made him promise that he was to use it for no other purpose and not knowing of any reason to use it otherwise he had happily consented.

Finally he had been gifted items called clothes,

"You will need these . . . " Friendly had explained

" . . . as not everywhere in Ur is was warm and saf - - - err pleasant as here in the minds of Giants"

Stoot nodded and had put on the items he had been given.

Zille had introduced him to a companion, a thing known a Rock, he was told that the Rock would go with him, helping to convey messages between the Giants and himself he was told that the Rock was very wise and could help with any problems he might encounter, the rock however seemed to have its own ideas and taunted the little Glitch whenever it thought the Giannts were not listening.

At last he was ready to start the journey, to begin the adventure to save Alph.

We now continue the story with glipses into or heroic Glitchs' Log

    Plank 1.
Today I was thunked or thinked into being, not sure if I believe it but the nine Giants said it was so, are they right eh? Does it seem right? Its hard to freeking tell. I asked the rock but he just stared blankly at me, you know a rocks stare is kinda wrong dontcha think?  But anyway today I was thunked into being . . . I wonder what day today is? I'll ask the rock, yeah I know but I tried asking a hen, it just squawked and flapped and got all pecknikety till in the end I had to grab it. Do you know what happened then eh? It freeking pooped grain, I couldn't belive it but that's what it did, anyways it wouldnt tell me what day it was so . . . ok the rock says its Fabday Primuary 1. Good to know eh? . . . Here I am a small Glitch in a big world, a Glitch right what is that? Well apparently so the giants say I'm a small bit of their imagination, whos writing this crap? . . . oh yeah I am, so yeah hmm . . . very awesome . . . not . . . I mean why can't I be something good like one of them piggies, I mean come on you get petted and nibbled and all ya need do is give a bit of meat, or I could be a tree, but NO I have to be a Tiny Speck and why, cause thats the way they thunk me. Is that freeking fair eh?

Yesterday seemed a little short, perhaps learning took longer than I thought, anyways todays a new day and I set out with hope and high expectation. This world is pretty darn amazing eh, so much to see and experience, but I have a task so I can't try everything just yet, maybe later.

One things for sure, this rock friend I been saddled with, I don't like him much, he's such a freeking nag, keeps asking me to do stuff. I mean come on surely he knows how important my mission is right? but no nag nag nag . . . well then I found a way to shut him up, I asked he learn something for me, something useful that would give me an advantage, he hummed and ahhed a lot but I demanded till he showed me some ideas and I picked better learning 1 haa and now he's quite so I can at last think, go me!!

I have mastered the art of tree petting and watering, the trees always seem so happy and I have quite the stash of cherries and beans eh. Life feels freeking good so far. Well, hmm not everything is good, I still cant get my hands on a blooming butterfly, milk it I'd like to squish it freeking thing flapping all about till ya lotion up your hands and then will they come down no way . . . wasted my tube of lotion I did. grr and all I got was a stubbed toe and . . .
    . . . eh what was that? . . .

You wont believe me but I just saw an awesome black chicken, wow and they dont just flap they fly!!, I'm gonna get me one . . . haaaa betcha get more than measly grain squeezing one those beauties eh!

  • Plank 3

So I've been following this path for while now, I so wanna climb a tree but how? Seems in the making the Giants forgot to include such? So I am forever stuck at one level eh? No freeking way . . . lemme think this through a bit, hmmm the Giants said I was imagined into this world and that I could help build it all I need do was to think, right . . . right so if I can think myself climbing a freeking tree then . . . lesse now, ok . . . erk, yeah look I can jump, ok ok not a huge one but yupp yupp I can, see look air beneath these feet, yay . . . I'm feeling good, gonna jump me up a tree.

    A short while later . . .

I did it, I jumped up. from branch to branch up and up and now well now I'm at the freeking top. Haa go me eh! You know what? From up here the world is so much bigger, looking around I see hills off in the distance hmm but the Giants said that Alph was lost in a mire, wonder what a mire is? Wait maybe I can . . . some dark damp place full of thick vines that . . . no no . . . it needs to be . . . oh gee this is hard . . . ok ok I see a place way off in the distance , kinda looks dark and wild, gonna head there, now then how to get outta this tree, umm theres a lower branch here, so now a little jump . . . and . . . .. agh!!!!

Oof, owie darn that last branch whacked me right in the . . . oh hey what just happened, I jumped right but not up and the branch below I just fell through it what the heck . . . I mean come on . . . well no matter I need to get going, Alph needs me to reach him and from what the Giants said the sooner I do the better, Oh but wait, whats this, wow a black chicken feather, yay yes, I'm gonna squoze me one of those fine black hens justa soon as, but for now I'm putting this in my bag.

    A little later

So I passed another of those black feathers a while back now and beside it was a dead tree, kinda sad to see it all brown and bare. Not sure what tree, a bean or a cherry I felt so helpless seeing it there, so I took out the axe and well . . . I wacked at it . . . yeah I mean why, as if it hadnt suffered enough, but then it was gone and I gained a few more planks, and this is a good thing I guess, but somehow I still feel sad, death is so not a good thing, so yeah Alph I'm on my way, you'd better freeking hold on till I get there dude, no dying on me right?

  • Chapter 7

    S - "So hows he doing? "

Spriggan glanced across the thoughts of Pot, unable to hide a soft shudder of repulsion at his sprawled form, the white powder evident in the damage it was doing to him. It seemed that no amount of persuasion would change Pots mind. Nonetheless he seemed, of all the Giants, the one most concerned about the Glitch named Stoot.

For several moments Pot stared blankly at Spriggan, his look of surprise at Spriggans' question showing clearly, after all this was Spriggan whose sole concern was trees . . . and yet, but of course, trees . . . with a long yawn Pot rose and approached Spriggan.

P - "He's doing well, he just chopped down his first tree, actually it w . . ."

    S - "Oh good, . . . wait ! He did what!?!"

Spriggan's roar of anger rattled through the heads of the others, startling them into tuning their thoughts on the pair. Already Pot was backing from Spriggans angry outburt trying to avoid the volley of rhetoric that hammered against him . . .

S - "Why didnt you tell me before?, What gives you the right to allow him to do that to one of MY trees? Where's your sense of loyalty? Why I should woop that Glitch and woop it good."

H - "Wait Spriggan. Wait . .. hear me now, this is not the way."

Humbuba reached out to the flayling Spriggan,

H - "Let us hear what else Pot has to say before you woop anyone, please let him speak."

Now Pot tell us exactly what you saw, dont leave anything out and yes Spriggan If it is what you believe you may woop him, but first we need to know exactly what occurred.

Pot scrunched up his eyes, it was hard for him to remember his name let alone what he had seen hours ago, but he knew it was important in fact this was very important Stoots life could depend on his memory, and for all his faults the Giant had a soft thought for the small Glitch, perhaps he saw in him the same fear of being not good enough as he himself felt. He shook himself, he would do his best, after all those at the bottom of the pile needed to stick together.

    P - "Well ummm . . ."

Pots voice trembled as he tried to recall what he had witnessed,

P - "Lets see, he was umm going up, yes yes up a tree, he was rising up off the ground."

    C - "Levitating?"

Cosma's eyes sparkled with a spark of hope

P - "Well no . . . not levitating but well using his hands and jumping, but not along he was going up."

C - "He learnt something new, well would you believe it?"

    Cosma seemed rather impressed

    H - "Well of course"
    Exclaimed Humbaba,
H - "Our little Glitch, we should have realised"

    S - "He's a tree killer"
Spriggan's voice was angry but plaintive
S - "I am going to thrash him so hard"

    C&H - "Not yet Spriggan,"

Both Cosma and Humbaba stood before the angry Giant,

H - "Not until Pot has finished. Now Pot continue let us hear what more you know"

P - "Well after he got to the top of the tree he kinda looked around and then he . .  well he jumped and down he went hust like a rock, dropped but he didnt smash as a rock would, he got up and started to walk and he seemed  seemed to know where he wanted to go and he passed the black feather and and . . . "

The others had stopped listening a flurry of voices ringing out, their concerns  at mention of black feathers filling the air with aprehension, they all understood this was a bad sign and that where black feathers are the Rook has been

P- "Then he saw the dead tree and hacked it down and well  . .  I umm I dont remember more"

Pot trembled, his head hanging as he stood before the other Giants, the ache in his belly reminding him he needed his white powder but here under the eyes of the others such a thing would have to wait.

It was Cosma that caught first what Pot had said, that the tree was dead before Stoot had chopped it down, it took but a few moments to share the news with the others, and a few more to convince Spriggan. Spriggan finally agreeing that chopping a dead tree did not equate to murdering one.

Relieved by the news that Stoot was innocent Spriggan set her thoughts to ponder on the Glitches facination with writing on planks, surely there was something better the Giants could imagine for him, something lighter, easier.

Pot had managed to save Stoot from an angry Spriggan had it not been that his thoughts were being torn by his hunger for the white powder he might have felt he had achieved something quite special. On Ur unaware of the drama Stoot continued his journey towards Shimla Mirch.

    To be continued.
