Gifting credits to other players

Now you can buy credits for other players (because, presumably, you are really nice). You can either go to the profile page of your prospective giftee, scroll down to the "Gifts" section at the bottom and start from there or go to this page and choose one of your friends from the dropdown list: www.glitch.com/credits/gift/

  • Great idea for RL friends' birthdays who play Glitch, ingame friends Glitch bUrthdays and to attach to gift invites to new players.

    Way to go TS!

  • Awesome!

    Question -

*Acceptable (obviously): trading credit upgraded furniture to a player for currants
*But not acceptable (from what staff has said in other threads): Trading a gift subscription for currants
*So does gifting credits in exchange for currants also fall under the "don't exchange currants for real-world money" umbrella, and is not acceptable?

  • Will gifted credits be subject to doubling when Glitch launches again, like other credit stipends and purchases?

  • MaryLiLamb: Yep!

  • Nice!

  • That's really counter-intuitive (as I am not sure of the difference between a gift subscription versus gift credits when it comes "real world money" (as well as the whole "significant advantage" thing..)).  Maybe there should be a specific faq section on the whole issue?

  • It has bugged me that we could trade upgraded furniture for currants, but not subs.
I even tried to find out the reasoning in contact with TS to basically get "because" as the answer.
The idea that you can now trade credits for currants does my head in.
This definitely needs to be thought through and clearly (yes/no) listed on the site.

  • Yay! Too bad I'm too poor to buy credits for anyone (including myself) XD

  • Giving credit packs for gifts is a lovely thing. Awesome.  Excellent.

I want to elaborate on the can of worms I mentioned above. Condoning trades of currants for credits is a minefield because Glitch does not have a secure currents/credits trade interface. The furniture works well because it's built into the game. Buying credit-upgraded furniture from the auction or a tower leaves no opportunity for cheating.  As much as I'd like to believe only nice people play Glitch, it's pretty much guaranteed that there will be scams involving current/credit trades, possibly with players losing real money in the process. "Buy me 400 credits and I'll give you a Glitchmas Yeti. No, you have to gift the credits first..." There will also be claims of scams by players attempting to get credits from TS for free that your staff will have to investigate.

Stoot, I love this game and I'd hate to see TS having to mediate between players because of a rule allowing trading of currants for credit gifts without any way to ensure the trades are completed other than your staff digging through logs. Ugh, what a nightmare! You need to be spending your time adding cool stuff to the game! If you really want free players to have access to credits by grinding currants, you need to do something like allow sales of credits in the auctions.

  • Sorry: sometimes the tongue in my cheek makes things not clear :)

To be clear: it is against the terms of service to sell credits for currants (or rare items or other stuff in the game). You can't trade real money or real money equivalents for things in game.

(The reason for this is: because. Also for all the reasons Lucille Ball mentions. And because it doesn't seem very Glitch-like.)

  • As much as it annoyed me previously, seeing you say 'because' here actually made me laugh out loud.

Thank you Lucille for explaining it ;)

  • I'm sleepy and confuse-prone (sorry!) - does this mean it's not allowed?  Or was the clarification for something else?

  • Thank you for clarifying that. I would really really hate to see the farmers take over this game just like they did all other MMOs.  That would definitely make me leave quickly, glad you said no to that.
Posted 99 days ago by Innie✿, Obviously Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The problem is that farmers are also against the TOS of "other MMOs", but the activity still happens, just on the black market instead of out in the open.

One difference -- There is nothing much in-game that could be converted into real money, due to the sandbox nature of the game, and the lack of in-game value for rares.

  • diaveborn (and others): there is no regulation on trading currants for in game items. There is no regulation on talking to a member and asking for a gift of credits/subscription. So potentially, you could make a trade where for instance you would give the person 100 currants and they would give you 100 cherries. Then that would trigger them buying you 100 credits or building you upgraded furniture or such. Or you could simply trade 100 cherries for upgraded stuff. First of all, I don't understand how this would be any different than you just outright asking them for money, or them outright giving it to you (which TS would have no control over). You cannot go in game and trade currants directly for credits or a subscription. THAT would be a violation.  Am I right TS or have I missed something?
Posted 98 days ago by Holly Waterfall Subscriber! | Permalink
  • You've missed something.  People making each other furniture is fine under the rules, as is trading for imbued teleport scripts.  Making a deal that involves exchanging in-game goods for money, gift subscriptions, or gift credits is against the rules even if there are also in-game goods on the other side of the deal.  Is this a rule that's easy to enforce?  No.  But the trade you describe is against the rules.

  • Staff,is possible to do this (is an example):
    Glithen A has 100 credits,Glithen B has 0 credits.Then Glithen A gifts their credits to Glithen B.
Process:Glithen A get subtracted 100 credits and Glithen B gets adwarded 100 credits beacuse of translation.
    Is that possible?

  • On the bottom of a profile page: " New! Buy some credits for _____" which then links to a the page to purchase credits.  It seems to me that if you wanna gift credits (like subs) that you gift newly purchased credits, not old hand-me-downs.

  • Potential issues aside, I'm so pleased we now have the ability to surprise someone with a creditlicious treat. Lovely, lovely, lovely.

  • I'm a little confused, I made enough currants for some rare items via upgrading furniture as a 'service' what's the point in not allowing users to trade for currants and allowing this? I mean at the end of the day you can earn currants in game anyhow so why not allow us to buy them like this?
Posted 98 days ago by Nytician Subscriber! | Permalink
  • See above. It encourages bad behavior and in Stoot's words "doesn't seem very Glitch-like".

Also, TS has to provide better value for paying players or they will not survive as a business.  If you open up all the credit options to free players by allowing direct credit sales for currants, there is less incentive to purchase credits or subscribe.

Allowing sales of credit-upgraded furniture was an interesting decision. It benefits paying customers becasue we are provided with a way to indirectly exchange credits for currants safely.  It also allows free players a little access to paid content without devaluing subscriptions or credit purchases too badly. (IMO allowing sales of items upgraded with subscriber-only furniture styles was a mistake but it's not my decision to make.)

  • Now I have something I can do with those leftover 11 credits!

Except that they're 11.  It's kind of nice to see that number up there for some reason...

Edit:  Oh, I see.  If I've already got the credits, they're mine.  This is still totally cool.

  • My interpretation:

Tiny Speck doesn't want to waste a ton of their time playing traffic cop regarding transactions that occur entirely outside their 'system.'  They know that if it is 'allowed' players will make what are essentially un-trackable trades.  Because that's what it would have to be.  There's no direct interface to trade 'gifted Credits' for Currants, it is by necessity an 'honor system' deal.

So they decree this form of trading as 'not allowed.'  I would do that, too, if I had to administer the system.  It drives this form of 'trading' underground, so that neither party can waste Customer Support's time crying about the results of deals gone wrong.  If people squawk about it the ban hammer quickly resolves matters.

I suspect, though, that they also don't want to waste time dealing with third party snitches who learn that people have successfully conducted trading of this kind without any issue and go running to complain about it.  So 'banning' the practice makes sense.  TS washes their hand of the matter and don't have to 'police' deals gone bad.

I don't intend to conduct any trades of this sort.  But I don't care one way or the other if other players do, and wouldn't turn anybody in over it.  And I would look down on snitches who do so.  Why are you wasting Customer Support's time on a victimless crime?  It's the same deal as selling upgraded furniture for currants.

  • If a friend surprises me with credits, and I thank her by giving her an in-game present, other players and staff can assume that we're breaking the rules.  This is a slippery slope.

The "dollars won't provide gameplay advantage" idea disappeared the second tokens were introduced (players can sell imbued TP scripts), and being able to swap furniture upgrades for currants just compounded the problem.  Why not modify the trade window to allow credit-for-currant transactions?  It may not be very Glitch-like, but frankly, neither are tokens or furniture upgrade sales, and TS would certainly sell many more credits if this sort of trade weren't against the TOS.

  • Speaking of subscriptions, mine expires Sept 28 and when I went looking to renew, it says, "you'll have the option to extend your subscription by another year, or go month-to-month." Has anyone renewed yet and how did you do it?
Posted 97 days ago by MaryLiLamb Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think the ones that were bought back then (before launch) all expire on the 28th. Mine does too. I was wondering the same thing, though I really think I'll just have to do the monthly payments this time around, since the cost for a whole year will be higher, and stupid life things over the summer has made saving up that much money impossible.
