the good neighbor feat, and why it brings out the 'not so good'

There were a few people today in global, bringing up why they were upset with the 'measly' gifts they were being left by this feat. It really made the feat sour for me, because clearly these series of feats are meant to bring more community to the game. The saying hi, the leaving gifts, and the unknown of tomorrow (random kindness?) but anyway, not the point.

The point of this feat, for me and for many others I assume, was to be friendly and leave gifts and messages and receive gifts in messages. It never crossed my mind to be ungrateful by any gifts left. I've gotten game tickets, and gems, and foods, and even just 'measly' cherries. None upset me, I just put them in my bags and paid it forward to the next person I visited.

Obviously there are those that are purposefully grinding for the leaderboards and might be leaving smaller gifts to get by faster. But I feel like this feat brought out the greedy, the 'not so good', who even one person said they wanted to 'ban' users that had left gasses, cherries, beans, because they saw it as an 'insult' to be left such small items.

I guess I wanted to make this discussion to see if anyone else felt this way, disappointed that this feat kind of brought out an slightly ugly side to the community aspect of the game that initially drew me in and has kept me playing glitch for a year.

  • So much of the experience of these feats has to do with the expectations and wishes you bring to them. If you wish to be on the leaderboard you will behave differently and interpret the results differently than someone who decides that all they want to do is milk the goofy side-effects of the feat for giggles.

I've participated in most of the feats thus far. And I like getting the rocks as much as anyone. That said, I find I have gotten the most bang for the buck during the situations where I spent my time laughing instead of grinding... even if I didn't get as many small rocks for the effort. And I will say for TS, with the exception of the ill-starred "invite all your friends" feat, the feats generally have a had a social component to them that could be maximized or minimized depending on your predelections.

I have found that joining a group that I am compatible with has helped enormously increase the fun factor of Glitch. If I'm participating in a feat and I find that I'm not struggling to balance the chat windows with the game window, I'm shifting too far to the grinding side of the equation for me to have a good time. YMMV of course, but for those who are not enjoying the feats very much perhaps its time to re-evaluate how you approach the feat and who you are socializing with in-game.

  • This 3-part Feat has been my favorite so far. I loved going to all these new-to-me homestreets. I'm sort of a higher level glitch (44) so i tried to leave a nice cooked food. I got all kinds of things -- including a lump of dirt from one glitch. But reall I have to agree with the OP. And Adar -- I belong to a group that usually chats among ourselves. This definitely increases the fun factor!

  • OMG Joni Mitchell totally wins the thread. +1million

Also, I just wanted to say that anything given to me was appreciated. I was just excited to have visitors on my street, and the IMG was a definite bonus! :)

  • :).. thanks for the kind comments.. I was just struck by the moment, lol :).  I seem to have an ample supply of unmatched socks from my shared laundry room.. lose some - find some .. it's all good :) Never gave a thought to the "value" of the gifts I was given.  One could apply the old addage... One person's trash is another person's treasure.  I'm pretty sure item value was not the point of this feat.  Actually, I was wondering if it might have been a nifty way for TS to test how well a gazillion Glitches were all trying to "jump" from place to place at the same time, and (hopefully) not have the servers catch fire.

  • It sucks that there are some people out there who just don't appreciate anything!  Although I find that a lot of players are really nice here! I would love to get into some groups that are nice, if anyone can suggest some nice ones! :)

  • I am thankful for the Good Neighbor feat for several reasons.  It opens up the possibilities of leaving behind packages on every home street you visit.  During these 24 hours, we have discovered the magic of gifting others just for the sakes of giving!  I have left gems, tinctures, moly ingots, so the rest of us would feel compelled to leave better packages more often.

So in the end, I will leave _nice_ packages once in a while to keep that spirit going! :)

  • Haven't read all the replies so I apologize if I am repeating something.  (edit: scanning through now I see that I am. But I'll leave this here anyway :) )

I think it's very good to be grateful.  I also think that leaving a single grain, for example, with a butler possibly (not necessarily) signifies that the person leaving the gift is thinking more about grinding through the feat than being neighborly.  It makes sense that people would want to grind.  I think that a big benefit of feats like this or the pet/water/etc feat is not as much the benefit at the time but that it promotes the mechanic, to new players or to people who need a bit of a reminder.  Which is awesome :)

I think anyone who may have found gifts that they felt somewhat dissatisfied with can put it in a different perspective - just like it takes people to die for others to mourn, it takes butlers with empty slots so that others can leave gifts.  So just accepting the gifts through your butler is inherently a different way people were being neighbourly! :)

  • I remember getting one bean as a gift from a new player ages ago. She was so excited about it, I ended up loving it even more. It was just so cute. I kept that bean in a separate bag as a memory. Sadly that bean got assimilated into the moving boxes during the housing reset. That made me really very sad.

just sharing this because for newer players a bean or ten spinach or 200 meat are huge things, and that there are a lot of new players who'd want to take part in a feat just as much as the rest of us. making assumptions and random player blocking just makes us all sad pandas at the end of the day.

  • I visited a lot of streets during that feat, and what I gave out was totally random. I gave great gifts to some and crummy gifts to others just depending on what I felt like doing in the moment. I happen to think it's funny to leave 1 cabbage etc. And if I felt like it I gave whole stacks of things. I really don't see why level should matter. Just because someone has been playing for a while doesn't mean they're obligated to give you a Glitchmas yeti ;)

Also, for some streets that I visited I honestly couldn't tell if the player was even active anymore. I didn't want to use up a great gift on someone who had potentially quit playing, I wanted to make sure it was (hopefully) enjoyed.

  • Joni Mitchell: I was thinking the same thing: that this epic was one big TS server stress test in disguise.

  • I saw the same comment, and thought it was ridiculous. Yeah, some people did leave very generous gifts (most of which were probably regifted), but it's not like the 'measly' gifts were wasted either. I used grain to top up piggy feeders, the beans were seasoned to give to someone else, and the cherries were converted to make cocktails. I also left a whole lot of cheese, meat, and even dirt at some point, and I bet that all got used in some way, too.

It's a shame some people couldn't enjoy the feat in the spirit it was intended. Heck, the best thing I received was actually a single carrot, because it let me finally complete a cooking quest I was too lazy to get ingredients for. That's way better than getting a crummy old gem. Thank you, carrot-giver!

  • Genu, I like the cut of your jib.

Seriously, who looks at that feat and concludes that it's about getting cool presents?

  • One thing I liked about this feat was it transformed the "favor" aspect of gift giving. Suddenly, retrieving gifts from my butler was helping out other glitches to get more points in the feat! I thought that was cool. But other people in this thread are right, people will always find something to complain about.

  • The one thing that I found a little offensive was a player asking in global what the worst gift was because he wanted to be insulting. He settled on a single grain after someone said they would consider paper a nice gift.

I got a lot of hooch and milk. The coolest gift was 2 tickets to Cloud Rings. I was leaving a face smelter because they're useful.

  • I hate to pile on, but this Feat just highlight the ME, MYSELF, attitude so many people have now. It is ashame that they don't get the feeling of satisfaction in giving or receiving a gift, no mater how small. No matter how small or "cheap" a gift is, it is always as useful as you make it.  I don't get upset at the complaining from those who only think that a gift has to be expensive, to be worth receiving, I just feel sad that they don't understand that the true worth of giving is in fact the act t of giving, even if is only in a game.

  • Wow. I'm surprised. I didn't give much thought to any meaning behind the gifts- because there is no way I can know the situation or personality of whomever gave it to me, unless I'm already acquainted with them.

They were all lovely, and they were all things I wouldn't have had otherwise. I don't care if the person was intending to be offensive or merely had nothing else to give or just wanted to be able to hit up as many streets as possible.

I think for those assuming (I'm refraining from repeating a saying that goes with that word) the intention behind smaller gifts as insulting, we should bear in mind this line from the guidelines:

"Avoid assuming bad intentions in other players: some of them will think differently than you; or English might not be their first language; or their kid will have spilled a glass of milk on the cat a second ago; or they might not understand the particular nuances with which you play. Or … who knows? A willingness to forgive will go a long way, especially when directed towards new players who might not yet have fully learned what effects their actions have on others."

I got a few gifts with notes attached that made me smile. One was a Cloud 11 Smoothie and the person wrote, "Hope you're on Cloud 11!" The other was accompanied by the phrase, "Trick or feat!" There was also one that was merely a :) and it made me do just that.

The only reason I'd presume that someone was trying to insult me with a gift left at my butler is if they also left a message that was insulting. In that case, their loss and my gain, because I'm really not going to care.

Also, Vera, poop is an awesome gift. Someone left me a message once telling me my butler gift was poopy (I'd only put in something cheap because I was testing out the mechanism and then promptly forgot he could give them out since I wasn't on much), so I had him give out guano for a while.

  • I was a bit aghast at the attitude of the minority that wanted only good gifts and would ban for small ones. I really didn't have much of anything made, been slacking on crafting , and haven't been on as much as of late, could i of bought stuff to give....sure....but i did not think that was necessary and would cost a lot considering how much you'd need, so i gave mostly milk, after awhile i realised i was going to run out, so less was given, ppl stretched what they had because of visiting so many streets! And i paid attention to my butler and emptied often....which was  a BIG part of this one....too many full butlers. But yeah a gift is a gift!....it shouldn't matter at all what it is, also the real gift was all the img you got from ppl visiting!

  • Lucille Ball: ... Woah. Wow. I know you can't spread names or anything and I'm absolutely not asking you, but I'd love to know who that was so I could minimize my interactions with them in the future!

  • I got some allspice and a lot of meat, and I'd like to say thanks to everyone who visited and left a gift. I don't care about the value, I rarely get packages so I really enjoyed it, it even made me leave gifts at other peoples houses after the feat was over simply because I enjoyed it so much myself :) There were one that actually re-gifted me what my butler gave out, lol ^^ But I'm not about to complain about it, it made me giggle :P

  • My favorite gift was a Skygazer ticket...which was almost certainly a re-gift of the Skygazer ticket my butler was giving out. I laughed out loud.

  • @diaveborn ♥, I was too busy enjoying myself to think of making note of the player. It went by in global and I thought "huh, that's kind of sad" and went back to enjoying the Feat.

  • I agree with this feat making us more used to giving things. I was walking through streets for the latest feat to pet pigs etc, and when their butlers hit me with a hi I almost automatically checked if he had any package slots left and sat there pondering what kind of gift I could give!

  • As some pointed out before, we did get img for people visiting. That alone was nice because 5k+ img (my max) without feeling like I was begging for visitors or feel i don't have something to offer for those visits is not a BAD take at ALL.

Also, i just took stuff from my butler when i was around and announced in global "empty butler". People kept showing up! I thought i'd ran out of luck, mwaahahaaa. There were bags set aside for the items left to me by people, i didn't even notice much what was left to me.

Yea, it was nice that some people did leave rube essences sometimes but it was ok that just a meat or a cucumber was left for me sometimes. Those people that were visiting didn't owe me for having visited them, they didn't even ask me specifically to come visit them in return. So, free stuff, free img between my few visits for the feat to others' street. That was not too bad.
