the good neighbor feat, and why it brings out the 'not so good'

There were a few people today in global, bringing up why they were upset with the 'measly' gifts they were being left by this feat. It really made the feat sour for me, because clearly these series of feats are meant to bring more community to the game. The saying hi, the leaving gifts, and the unknown of tomorrow (random kindness?) but anyway, not the point.

The point of this feat, for me and for many others I assume, was to be friendly and leave gifts and messages and receive gifts in messages. It never crossed my mind to be ungrateful by any gifts left. I've gotten game tickets, and gems, and foods, and even just 'measly' cherries. None upset me, I just put them in my bags and paid it forward to the next person I visited.

Obviously there are those that are purposefully grinding for the leaderboards and might be leaving smaller gifts to get by faster. But I feel like this feat brought out the greedy, the 'not so good', who even one person said they wanted to 'ban' users that had left gasses, cherries, beans, because they saw it as an 'insult' to be left such small items.

I guess I wanted to make this discussion to see if anyone else felt this way, disappointed that this feat kind of brought out an slightly ugly side to the community aspect of the game that initially drew me in and has kept me playing glitch for a year.

  • :( That's sad. I can't even get into the game but if I heard talk like that, it would...well, it wouldn't upset me but I'd roll my eyes right around my head. Insult? Really?

  • I'm sorry you can't get into the game! :( that would be really frustrating, especially during a feat.

It didn't really upset me, more than it did shock me, which I shouldn't have been because I know that not everyone is happiness and rainbows and glitch flowers. But, maybe it's just me, even if without a feat I was left a lone cherry with my butler, it would make me smile, just to get a gift at all. Nothing about ungratefulness would cross my mind at all.

  • I left small stuff last night while I was still in, because, yes I did want to get as many points as possible. A few beans here, some spices, whatever I had multiples of. And then I went around leaving nothing at all because lag was bad. And I said to myself, at some point I'll randomly leave someone something really good, like a cubi. Just for fun.

Because fun is what it's about. I don't even know where someone's head has to be in order for them to start judging the value of the gifts. Sheesh. Well, no, I have a good idea of where their head is...

(and yes it is frustrating, especially considering the other hemisphere got to play all of the night when I was sleeping, and now that I'm awake, I might have caught up a bit in the ranking...but no go. Ah, well, real life also exists :D :D )

  • I appreciate any gift given to me & I appreciate ppl coming to my street to visit... that's a shame that some ppl have turned fun into greed, you know if they don't like my gift & the fact that I did stop by their place than if it makes them happy they can block me & I shall go down the glitch road & enjoy myself...

  • Wow. While it doesn't surprise me at all that people would complain in this manner, it does disappoint me to hear of such things considering my mostly positive experiences in Glitch thus far.

  • If given cherries, I shall make lemonade!

I gave my gifts with joy and not with my eye on the artifact prize. Some seem to be missing the point of the feat. I think it is to promote a sense of community and become accquainted with Glitchen you might not know.

  • Maybe the glitch leaving such "small" items was a newbie.  One package left for me was 10 onions and it made smile cause the player was a level 12.  I happily accepted them and will visit that glitch today with some goodies.

  • Gosh I hope nobody thought my gifts were rubbish! I tried to leave nice things, though I'm not rich enough to give good cubis or anything like that.

I'm not complaining, but I wondered why there was a flurry of them.

  • I left plops. Which I love because I never seem to have them when I need them. Also, poo is funny. Of course, it dawned on me later that some might be insulted when their butler hands them a pile of poo. So, um, I'm posting here so that if anyone was insulted, it totally wasn't personal. And plops are good! And poo is funny!

  • I left spinach seeds. 'Cause I didn't need them. And hey, the player's essentially being handed 12 spinach.
And if the player feeds the 12 spinach to a piggy, and plants the seeds, that's 48 spinach. ANd then 144 spinach. And then 576 spinach.

I've given you a heck lot of potential spinach!!

  • Everything I've gotten has been very appreciated (working on some of my food quests) and I've tried to give some good things (cheese, drinks, upgrade cards).

If I find that a butler is full, I try to go around their street and harvest, dig, etc. so that they get some extra iMG from me.
In fact...I thought that's what was intended when I first started this feat. Not just give to butlers and then leave, so I kinda don't have anywhere near the amount of visits a lot of others have...but that's ok coz I'm having fun as well as collecting a lot of stuff while giving iMG :D

  • My take on this feat and the big picture.
Posted 45 days ago by Pascale Subscriber! | Permalink
  • That makes me sad. So what if all that was left was a bean or cherry. Sure it does not say much about the person who left it, but then some people might think what I left was measly (10 butterfly milk), if I could leave anything since the butler was full.

I will never get over the ways we find to complain about something. Sure, it was good to find out the package limit on butlers so TS can maybe change it. Or think more in future when they design a feat, that limitations on what we can do in it might hurt the feat. That is more like bug reporting

But this? Really? Oh well, I guess it takes all kinds. All in all, it has one of the best feats yet. So there.....

  • I agree with ThursdayNext -- I thought the real gift was the IMG. I don't particularly care what people leave for my butler, it's all good. But thanks for the IMG! And, like Just Myself, I putter around each home street I visit to leave more IMG for others.

  • Whenever I encountered a butler that wasn't full, I gave it one hooch. I started by giving 5, but realized that I'd run through my inventory too quickly.

Is one hooch cheap? Maybe. My real motivation last night was trying to earn the Hi and Mighty badge, and the feat points for leaving packages were a secondary goal. One hooch is better than nothing.

  • Since I harvest, craft and otherwise earn my resources rather than buy (or beg) them, I give what I can freely, and I appreciate anything a visitor cares to leave with my butler, be it a gem or a grain. I'm sure that's true of many, many others. The feats are for fun, not commerce.

  • I judge you by the gift you leave.  JUDGE!
Posted 45 days ago by Red Sauce Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I really like the creative gifts (plop is great Vera) and the fun notes, but I certainly do not think someone is cheap or ought to be banned because they left a cherry or bean.  So what? - do I DESERVE a better gift?  No, I am glad my butler had room so someone could add to the feat.

My connection is slower so I loitered on most streets I visited - harvesting, watering, petting piggies.  I even had a chance to restore a depleted herb garden.  I hope I gave those Glitchen some extra IMG for sharing.

And dm, I got several single hooches and they made me laugh - are you trying to get my tiny Glitch drunk?  ha!  I think hooches are great fun.

  • My tower is full of nothing but food for sale. So, I appreciate that lone cherry since I blow through them so fast.

You know, this reminds me of Christmas in my family. Everybody cares about getting the big presents that cost a lot of money. I don't really fit into my family. Last year, I hand-made all of my gifts -- I spent months crocheting and knitting like a fiend. It actually turned out to be a big hit, despite the fact that none of them had a monster price tag attached.

So, to me, the people complaining can just sit on a tack. There's a lot of lower-level players. They don't have a lot of resources. Or, in my case, I just kept handing out Random Kindnesses because I assumed they'd be useful for the next feat and I wanted to make sure that everybody had one.

Even though the lag eventually put an end to my feat activities, I actually had some fun checking out streets I had never seen before. I mean, hasn't that type of exploration and discovery always been such a big part of Glitch?

  • Hurm. I've given small gifts (i.e. one bean), I've given bigger gifts, I've shamelessly re-gifted what I received to other Glitches, and I've given back the gift I received a few times, I've wandered a bit on home streets and petted, harvested, etc. I've tried to get back to my home fairly often to empty my butler and see about an even mix of the same things.

I'm just having fun--I don't have a fast system so I'll never top the leaderboard.

  • Complainers will complain, I guess. I got a variety of things left for me and I can't say any of them bothered me.

What did bother me was the limit on the number of gifts that can be left, which is just poor planning by TS given that they created a feat that would put a lot of pressure on this mechanism.
Posted 45 days ago by Janitch Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I didn't really find the limit of 5 packages per butler to be a problem since it only took a few seconds to check the butler, see it was full, and move on to another street.  I left drinks mostly, but it's because I had a ton of drinks already on hand since I try to keep good food and drinks around for Civility Group parties and activities.
However, I can understand people leaving small things, like beans or eggs or grain since a lot of players might not have a big stock of the higher-value stuff on hand, especially newer players.
IMHO, the point was to make a lot of visits and enjoy the thoughtfulness of leaving a gift for fellow players, not to get lots of visits and piles of goodies for yourself.
This has been my favorite feat so far.  :)

  • I don't really think the feat caused this bad attitude in some of the players.  They already had it.  It's just the focus of their attitude right now because it's the most prominent and most inclusive activity in the game.

I'm having a total blast, myself.  I'm not going to let their sour grapes ruin my enjoyment of leaving totally random stuff with butlers.  Like others say, it's the contact and the visiting of new streets (and the towers that reside there) that's the real joy of this feat.  Whiners can't take that away.  If they block you, they're just cutting themselves off from an important part of the game.  Their loss, not yours.

  • I am a bit upset by people leaving small gifts, because I think it shows a total lack of caring on the behalf of the other person. I don't expect people to leave me much, but one bean? I don't think it's even worth the package slot they left it in. Maybe the person is a complete newb, but I'm thinking it's someone who doesn't care. My gifts aren't always the best either, but I try to put a little thought into them, and I usually leave multiples of low-value items. I don't want this stuff for my own personal gain, but I think it's a little insulting. It's like someone giving you one sock for your birthday.

I'm not greedy. I've left out thousands of currants worth of stuff as part of the freebie jeebies route. I just wish some people weren't so eager to game the system.

It'd be totally cool to receive one grain if it was any other time, and I appreciate the thought. But it's sad to see how people can be so coldhearted. I think when people do that, they just see you as a means to their own ends. And calling people "whiners" when they are a little miffed isn't appropriate IMO.
Posted 45 days ago by Reirei Umezaki Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Coldhearted? Insulting? Gaming the system?  Really? Those are really strong words.

I do think it is whining to complain someone gave too little, when no one was under any obligation to give. It wasn't anyone's birthday, you know!

I'll bet you anything people who gave small stuff randomly didn't go around thinking 'Haha I sure cheated that Glitch out of their well-deserved gift, and it got me a point, haha!" They were just doing what the Feat required.

Me, for example, I haven't got a huge hoard of items, I might carry around twenty beans at a time, maybe a couple cherries...I collect stuff when I need it. So during the feat, I gave out a few beans, some spices, a plank or two, to spread it around. I didn't mean to insult anyone, and I am very surprised that someone could be insulted.

  • @Reirei Uzumaki: I can see where you're coming from but some of the people being discussed negatively here are actually wanting to block the players who did this without even knowing if they actually had anything more to donate (Which is besides the point to me. Isn't this feat about being good neighbours? If anyone visited my yard I hope they tended to my pigs and harvested the trees instead as I think that's more neighbourly than dropping a random present be it a milk or cubimal because Ur knows I forget to do that even when I'm logged on).

I can't say I'd judge on anything but how this complaint by those players was being said. It's not the gift that counts as much as the thought here and if the thoughts are sour that just spoils the hypothetical milk for me.

  • If someone's gonna block me for giving them something paltry, then GOOD.  I don't really care to know them or share this experience.  I come to glitch to get away from people like that in real life.  Please everyone stop worrying about how others play the game, it wont change anything except for your blood pressure.

I love this game. I really appreciate the humor, the warmth, the creativity of so many players. Are there some jerks who play? Hooo boy, there are! But even if jerks say something that upsets you, that doesn't mean most people share their insane point of view.

  • I look on these Feats as a kind of Newby experience.  We are being taught how to use certain features in the game and how to get used to using them so we can continue long after the Feat ends (I could be wrong).  It shouldn't matter what is left as a Gift but that we are learning HOW to leave Gifts.

The Butler can only hold 5 Gifts anyway.  I have left some items on Doorsteps.  There is a chance that another visitor will take what I leave and the Home owner will get nothing.  I have been to more than 100 streets and have been able to leave Gifts with Butlers maybe 3 to 5 times.  I was able to leave my first Gift with a Butler at House #73!  I have tended gardens and left items on doorsteps.

It is a bother to return home every so often and empty my Butler.  Also, the lag and Server disconnects have made this Feat less than Fun.  Irregardless, I cannot complain about the Gifts I have received.  They have ranged from Gems to Pickles and back again.  Guess what?  The Pickles are more Fun!  I like everything I have received and I thank all the nameless Glitchen who have left items for me (the Butler is forgetful so I don't know who you were).  Never complain about a Gift, it might be your last one!

It is a game.  Worry less what others do and do what makes it fun for you and before you know it the positive far outnumbers the bad.

Also. Thank all of you who did drop by and gift.  I know the feat didn't make gifts mandatory so you all rock!

Many thanks to Global for announcing when their butlers were empty. I must have seen every variation of butt joke over the last day.

What meant most to me was someone sent me a present because I gave them their first snail and they needed one to build their tower.

  • The fact that anyone came to my street at all and left something was completely satisfying to me. If it was a cherry or a grain, I could have the fun of contemplating what I could make with it. If it was a pineapple or a crying gas, I could appreciate that someone went to the trouble to change them, then I could have fun contemplating what I could make with them. Either way, anything at all is worthwhile and appreciated!

    Also, +eleventy to SallySomeone.

  • +1 SallySomeone. I hope people who expected more will block me, because I want to know who they are and don't want to play with them.

Yes, I gave out some single cherries, especially at the beginning when it seemed like I would be getting to a lot more streets and leaving things. I also gave out lots of drinks, meat, planks and boards, and re-gifted most of what I got. What I got included a single bean and a single allspice. I also restored Jellies and herb gardens. I restored a dirt pile that was next to two other dirt piles and the last person hadn't even put the dirt in!  I restored SIX sparkly rocks all on the same street. I gave lots of iMG, and received lots!

  • Once again the whole groupthink mentality rears its head on the board again. Apparently if you're not totally grateful for every little bean you get, you're just an abhorrent gluttonious monster. Ok then, so be it.

I can understand lower level players giving me just one cherry, but I don't think anyone over level 25 or so has that excuse. I'm level 27, and I find plenty of things to give away every day on my street.

I'm really saddened how accepted it is to look down on your fellow players and expect them not to say anything back in the name of "graciousness." I think it's like someone taking a used cough drop wrapper out of their pocket, handing it someone else, and being congratulated for it.

  • Reirei, who said that people that left small things with the butlers aren't giving away piles of things everyday? They're just not giving them to you, and now you're cranky about it (and it seems you're not the only one).

I know plenty of players, myself included, who gave small gifts in this feat, but who regularly wander around the streets of Ur handing extra tools, stacks of meat and other food, snocones, gems, potions, SDBs and all kinds of stuff to newbie players. We've made hundreds, possibly thousands, of animals and set them free in the wild and on new players home streets. We make it a habit of restoring anything we come across that's broken, regardless of whether we've ever used that resource. You may do this sort of thing, too. I have no idea.

But to imply that players are tacky or greedy or selfish because they didn't give something splashy enough to you in this feat is, well, tacky, greedy and selfish.

How any of this is groupthink, I'm not sure, unless you're a) confusing the concept of a cooperative game with groupthink, or b) accusing people of groupthink just because they all happen to disagree with you.

Mostly I took a look around to see if gardens needed tending, piggies feeding or nubs mined.  If you're upset about beans, or cherries or grain, you're sweatin' the small stuff  and missing the big picture. I found a slew of Glitchen I didn't even know existed before this weekend. Most of them are wonderful.
