Global Chat

So, this topic has not gotten enough attention in my opinion.  I have started a thread earlier myself, and seen/heard of one or two others, but none of them have gotten very far and I don't think I've ever seen any dev contribution (please correct me if I'm wrong).

A few tests ago stoot was talking about how global chat will be gone once the game goes live.  I had heard this before but until I heard it from stoot I didn't want to believe it.  Global chat is probably my favorite part of this game.  It is a way to stay connected with your friends.  I know you can IM/join groups, but it's not the same because those are limited only to its members, and have the potential to be exclusive (especially cause some groups you need to be invited to).

When I first started playing this game, one of the first things I did was join trade chat.  I was able to ask questions, but more than that I was able to meet new people and get a good feel of the community in this game.  In my opinion, the community is one of the best parts of this game.  I know there are greeters, and like I said above people have mentioned using groups to keep the community and friendships alive.  But I don't think that this will even come close to creating the sense of community global chat creates.  And for new players, to come into the game and only have a greeter to talk to (not that greeters aren't awesome) doesn't give the best impression of all the wonderful personalities that are a part of the Glitch community.

Long story short, I think this topic has not gotten enough attention (that's why I didn't post in Ideas, because lets face it, the Ideas forums get much less contribution than the general forums), I really want to hear some dev input as well as ideas about how to keep Global Chat (I understand it will have some problems when the world becomes more populated).  Please don't take away such a wonderful part of the game!

  • I agree, I also dont think I've ever played a game without a global or atleast large area local chat channel. SO many questions/requests get answered in global chat. Not to mention, it would be so much less efficient to have multiple chat channels as the only way to talk to a bunch of users at once. Personally, I dont want to have everyone join a trade group & an FAQ group & a social group just to toggle through all 3 to get the same thing done that global chat does now.

    My two cents.

  • I started a group for when this happens, how those of us that have formed friendships already via Global chat can stay connected.

    Beta Global Glitches

I will also be sad to see it go. Hopefully there will be a regional chat at least...

  • @NugMeg: I love that you started a group, but once Global Chat is gone it will be very exclusive for new players who do not know anyone yet and won't really get a chance to meet anyone because they don't know which groups to join.

  • I think the new players will do exactly what we did... watch and learn and start forming their own support systems (including group chats). I'm sure there will be some sort of regional general chats, but a global chat when there's thousands of players all on one channel... well, it would be Babel.

Think about how crazy the area chat gets when a bunch of us are trying to say something at an EoT party... you can't do it. You pop something out, and it goes streaming past faster than greased chicken. There's no frakkin' way you can get any real conversation or information there, can you? Well, that's what Global might look like after the world is opened.

Global has just been one way to meet people. Just starting an IM, noting what people say in forums, joining groups, listening in on area chats and the help channel are all other ways I've started friendships here. I'll miss Global, but I don't think losing it will be as devastating as some think.

  • I like global as well, however I think Lilith is correct.  Once the game goes live, assuming there will be a massive influx of new users, it would be virtually unreadable.

One of the games I used to play had a newbie channel and was "staffed" by a few veteran players to help out.   You were automatically joined when you started the game, and would either stay in until level XX, or you specifically opted out.  (Was this Eve online?   )

Perhaps something like that would work.

  • @Lilith and Linnaea:  that is why I am proposing some sort of change to be made to Global Chat so that it can handle the large number of players.  Perhaps only be available in certain zones (like in WoW).  And even like the game is currently, players can chose to leave or enter global chat, but in order to be in global they must be in those specific areas.

And without Global, players will not have the same opportunities to meet other players.  Especially those players that don't IM a lot or may be shy.  And even if players do IM, who is to say that they will get good responses?  I have IM'd people before and only a handful of times even gotten a response, and sometimes its been a very negative response even if I am just asking a question (such as: "is this your sparkly on the ground?" or "would you like to mine together?")

Players cannot join groups if they do not know what a group is, and they cannot join groups if they do not know anyone in any of those groups.  I really do not think groups are a reasonable replacement to meet other players with.

New players will most likely not be checking the forums unless they already are interested/intrigued in the game.  Who says they will get to that point if they don't get any sense of community or aren't able to meet new players?

I guess it was not the same for everyone else, but if it were not for global chat I would NEVER have been to the forums, I would NEVER have joined a group, and I probably would not be playing right now.
I'm not sure how it is for everyone else, but for myself, losing global could be such a loss that I feel it will be detrimental to new players, particularly those (like myself) who want to play a game like this because of the community.

  • I am sorry but you can't beat a dead horse... You must find a way to work around this when the game goes public...The game offers such happiness and I am sure you will find a way to make new friends... it is easy as pie in the Game of Glitch...

  • @napa:  It's not that easy without global chat though.  For instance, my boyfriend started playing before I did and he stopped playing almost immediately and I asked why and he said it was boring.  Well I wanted to try it for myself and I started and was in global chat a lot, and I didn't understand how he got bored.  But I can understand now, because the community provides a great appeal in this game and the content itself is not enough to keep me, or him apparently, (he is very shy and not outgoing enough to meet people on his own), interested for as long as I have been.  The community will be lost to all those new players because they are coming into a world where you can't interact with other players without a global chat, and that is losing a big portion of what makes this game so fun.

Perhaps because many people are already established they are forgetting how hard it is to meet people when you first join the game, especially if there is no global chat.

  • Why not just bump the existing topic rather than start a new thread and lose the previous voices?
Posted 17 months ago by zeeberk Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @zee: because I couldn't find any when I searched, and the last time I started one only a few people commented, I felt like it would just be better to start a new one.
Posted 17 months ago by Laurali Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I imagine if we all did that, a lot of good ideas might be lost.
Posted 17 months ago by zeeberk Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'll bump my old one then, but other than that one I could only find forums talking about the "issues" or "bugs" with global chat, but not about losing global itself

  • Hahah Barrens chat!  I was on Azjol-Nerub, and since I was a girl I got into all the top raiding guilds, even though I sucked.  All the girls hated me since I got free favors for being a mildly attractive flirty female playing WoW and all the guys let me get with much more than any man would have been able to get away with.
