I'm really going to miss quarters.

I've been checking out the new housing system but it's just so lonely having a big open street all to myself. I'll miss living in the trees with eleven neighbors, climbing past them to get to my rustic little round log house, right in its special spot. I don't want a large, square, modern-looking house, with bright walls and sleek floors. I'll miss the four little butterflies shared by all twelve of us, fluttering around in the 4300 block. I'll miss having a house number and living "on" a public street, the feeling of walking into Grimssea Bottom and thinking "home". And the sunset is so pretty but somehow it makes the place feel even lonelier.

I'm trying to give new housing a chance, but it's too different. Everything I love about old housing is gone. I may be alone in my opinion, but I just want to keep my home...I'll always love you, 4372 Grimssea Bottom Quarter.

  • Overall, I'm really tickled about the customized housing, but I agree that the Quarters system feels really cozy and connected with the world.

My last house pre-reset was in Estevan Meadows Quarter, and I *still* think "Hey, I used to live here" when I go through that street.

On the other hand, there are still so many unknowns about the new system, so I'm keeping an open mind.  I'm hoping the signpost thing will grow on me.  But I really do actively like having a special attachment to a specific location in Ur.

  • Keep in mind that what's out right now definitely isn't "new housing" as it will exist. Your house won't have to be square and modern-looking, they're just not ready to put customization of the house "shell" out for testing yet.

I do agree that the loss of quarters will be sad, but I'm looking forward to easy visits to friends and am hoping the eventual implementation of group halls will bring back some of the serendipity of running into people.

  • I too mourn the loss of visual neighborhoods. I think it's a mistake for a social game.

  • I agree about the loss of visual neighborhoods being a loss for a social game. I do see one solution besides the idea of community buildings.

    The main forum post says:

From the How to Test the New Houses link

"Finally, though the land outside your house is fixed for now (you can't expand it or add/remove resources yet) you do have a customizable signpost outside: you can use that to add up to five signs pointing to the home streets of people from your friends list."

Instead of sign posts (or as an option that their is a charge for ) why not just put the image of your friends houses so you can knock on their door not teleport to their door.  This would create a neighborhood for those who want one. Each player would have a different neighborhood of their own. Those who like to be alone can be alone as well.

Now it might be complicated to incorporate the different styles of homes out there but I see a lot of creative folks out their and think that the different styles could still be included. I see a very diverse land scape outside my home with tall trees holding tree houses and a rocky area with rock homes a nice clearing with slick looking modern homes and next to the tall trees I see a cute clearing with wonderful cottages in it. And finally my own home is in a cave underground and full of fireflies.

  • I think the problem with placing the houses owned by the people on your sign post actually onto your street is that every person you add to your street has 5 people they are linked to themselves and so on. In affect you will wind up with everyone in the game living on one street because each new house you add to the street has links to 5 more homes that must then be added. It just keeps multiplying.

I too will miss the local neighborhoods, but for me, their loss is a small price to pay for what we will gain from the new system.

  • And if this (^ post above mine) is how it works out in practice, doesn't that make it more of a social game, not less?

I've lived at Savi Sense in Bortola for about 4 months and I've seen other people on my housing block exactly twice - and once it was a person I invited there to do a trade.

So, yeah. If I can start at my friend's signposts and navigate all around the housing area, that would be great - I may even see someone for a change.

  • Who knew we lived so close to each other?  I'm number 4447 Grimssea Bottom.

Change is scary, that's is all.

  • I have already seen more people on my street than I ever have in my housing quarter.

Oh! Kestin, did you see this discussion? The Museum of Old Style Housing StreetI know it's not the same as living in quarters, but I though you might like the idea.

  • Having moved in RL a couple of dozen times, I'm used to change. But it always feels a bit melancholy leaving the old place, until we hit the highway and all possibilities lay ahead. I'm feeling that way now. I just want to hit the road...

  • Me too.  =/
I also don't like that from what I've seen, we can only pick to live in squarish houses.  ~O.o~  I liked the sweet roundedness of the treehouses and bog homes.  Blah.

  • What star Gazer said, except I want to see All my friends houses as if my street was part of a big city.   Their  house lights could be on or off depending on whether they are home.   I don't really care for the design of the street as it is its so much like the meadows/forests.  I chose to live in the bogs because it was as different from groddle meadows and groddle forest.

I'll also miss the music in the bogs.

  • Is it possible that we could've keot the neighborhoodly streets and just had the internal housing improvements?

  • I love the new customizations options ! But, I too, will really miss actually belonging to a Glitchy neighborhood! I agree that I think it detracts from this social game to completely lose quarters.
In more than one place, I actually met my neighbors and became friends with them and we had neighborhood street parties and everything! ;)
Also _it'd be nice to be able to link in more friends than the current number on my street sign. I know it's beta testing-so I am hopeful that maybe we could link more in future.
(and I miss my nice Rasanna , Highlands Music, too! )

  • Treesa... all that stuff is probably going to be available to you. What we're seeing now is *just enough* for testing the mechanics, not all the forthcoming options.

  • I felt so isolated at the test house that I put a couple of piggies in the front yard! I never see most of the people on my current street, but it feels like they are there because of the houses. The signposts are nice, but I too will miss that neighborhood feel that I enjoy now. I wonder what will happen to the animals that roam those residential streets. I'll take my animals with me, but there's hardly room for all the free-rangers on my new one-house street. Sigh. Give some to get some, I guess.

  • I really, really, really wish the devs would consider letting us cluster two or three, four or five to a street. We'd all have to agree on a background look, but our facades could all be different.

    I'm literally BEGGING for this.

    Please please please.

  • I don't think that will be possible with their plans for the new system Pascale :( From my understanding the public little bit of land I 'own' Liza Throttlebottom's Home Street is something I will be able to expand and add on to. Adding more tree patches, changing up the metal rock, making it boggy, or any of a number of other upgrades.

Since this will all be done with imagination (most likely) coordinating multiple people on one plot of upgradable land could be hella difficult. It sounds like they ARE working on a system LIKE that, but it will come with Group Halls way off on the farther end of 'soon'.
Posted 9 months ago by Liza Throttlebottom Subscriber! | Permalink
  • That is what I was thinking would come from Group Halls. You would be able to access them from your street and use them as a Hub for all of your friends houses that you want to go to.

  • no change is easy but overall I love more room on my new street.

  • Since this is only a test of one tiny aspect of the new housing, I can't believe the strength of the opinions voiced here.  All we are being shown is how to decorate a house - not how new houses will look, or how streets will look, but how to decorate a house.  Stop jumping to conclusions.

  • yes, i agree. i'm a sad little glitchen, and will miss my bog house very much.
i care not for furniture and wallpaper! i like filling the place with fireflies and covering my floors with rocks, and dumping lumps of earth wherever i like...
i do not want to be domesticated!

  • I hope I'm wrong, but from my experience on MMOs, all this housing system (with furniture and everything else) is the move from social to money oriented game.
I'm saying again - I hope I'm wrong; - because I think that this is the one of most creative game I have ever played.

  • Just saw this thread but made a comment in Global earlier that my new house felt lonely. I have been lucky and have two neighbours that were friendly and kind and we looked after the wood trees and the piggies and left treats for each other.

Realise it's just the beginning and new, etc., but honestly do feel isolated without being able to see my neighbours houses.

    I think I will get a dog :D

  • Also - I love that we can teleport from our homes to elsewhere with our set teleport points.
I do not love that the world map is inaccessible from the new houses.  Hopefully they'll add this as a feature later.

With the way the customisations have been set up Scarlett, I don't see them adding "rounded" rooms, just because of the difficulty of putting wallpaper up in those spots (it looks very square- and rectangle-oriented as it is right now)... but I do imagine them adding the same colours and themes as the bog homes.. because if they don't, a lot of people will be very disappointed.  :s

  • Auren: they have specifically stated that roundy rooms a la bog houses are coming.

  • Pascal:  about the future changes - I hope so.   I really didn't expect to miss the old bog environment so much, it came as a surprise to me.  Its nice that we are getting into the new housing without having to let go of the old housing too abruptly.  If the change had been sudden I'd really feel "homesick" every time I went to harvest in the bogs in future.
