Energy consumption when idle?

I'm quite confused about how energy gets consumed when you aren't doing anything.  Sometimes it seems to go down, sometimes not.  Sometimes it even seems to go up arbitrarily.  Is this location dependent?  Is there any way to see the current rate of energy decrease?  Does it continue when you aren't in the game at all?

  • Your energy slowly depletes whether you're doing stuff or not (i.e. AFK). As far as I know, it's not location dependent, though I wish at least in houses that your energy and mood would remain the same unless you were doing projects. It'd add a new incentive to having a house.

When you are not in game, then your energy and mood do not change at all.

  • Whenever you are in the game, you will lose a minimum of 3 energy points per minute.

  • I timed mine and I drop 4E every 30 seconds when AFK. That seems to be dependent on if I'm under 50% of max E. If I'm over that halfway mark, then I lose energy at a slower rate. I've not had the time to count it though.

  • Воланд I work at home and have 2 kids. It wasn't so bad over the summer, when it took longer to go to AFK and the energy drain wasn't as punitive. Now, I log out a lot more often, but it just means I'm more wary of logging back in more often.
