i wanted to post this now because i would forget by the time christmas was really here!

  • You are smart it is time to start planning for xmas.  Maybe find a good location with a big tree so we could leave presents or meet friends there to exchange gift, wonder if decorations would be possible, snow, ice skating.  Oh no I'm getting all sorts of ideas too early for me I'll be at xmas peak on Halloween.  LOL

  • How about christmas wrapping to put items in and then leave on people's doorsteps Christmas eve? Or put them around the tree xoxJulie mentioned!

    Also, Christmas Creep.

  • Cupcake had a Secret Glisanta party during the last test.  There were ninety participants.  It was difficult to organize, though Cupcake did a wonderful job.  We learned some things.  One is that it's nearly impossible to get everyone together at the same time for a party.  Another is that pre-determining pairs of gifters and giftees is not a good idea, because some people don't bring their gifts on time, so the recipients who do come to the party do not get gifts unless the host provides them.

We used bags to organize gifts, which was extremely expensive (the cheapest bag is 900 currants, and most people didn't provide one), but they did allow us to clearly label things.  Unfortunately, the unclaimed bags can't be mailed, so they will have to be handed to people at the beginning of the next test.

  • I remember @cupcake calling peoples names and no one answering. Need to find something a little better to work with. Not being able to send filled bags sucks. :(

  • I have one of the bags, my present was inside.  They are expensive, so will return to Cupcake so she can return to the vendor for some currants.  If anyone wants to drop off their bag to me I will be more than happy to make sure Cupcake gets.  She had to have worked her ass off to pull off the party, the presents and still be an outstanding hostess with that mob that descended on her home.  Thank you again Cupcake.  :)

  • That's actually part of the problem... bags cannot be sold to vendors (though I think they can be sold via trade to another player).  Another issue is that you can only hold a maximum of sixteen bags at a time.  Personally, I spent somewhere upwards of 35,000 currants on small bags (and we needed many more than that -- thankfully, other players donated them as well) but had to make multiple trips in order to drop them at Cupcake's house.

The potential good news is that a developer said that it might be possible to sell bags at some point in the future.  If that happens, hooray!  If not, be forewarned: this sort of party will cost you more than a Glitch mansion. :)  Of course, it's possible to limit each gift to the size of one stack of something, but a lot of people had fun filling gift bags, so it would be a shame to put a damper on that.

  • ok so bags. i can do a few. extra gifts sure.
besides i am saving up. by the time its x-mas i will have enough to buy enough for the party hopefully

  • GP we could give out the bags to others when we are done with them
Posted 16 months ago by GiaTori Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think it would be a good idea to have guests bring gift bags but not for a certain person, give them to the host and helpers, who in turn hand them out to a random person already at the party.
Posted 16 months ago by Laurali Subscriber! | Permalink
  • GiaToria: yes, the bags became parts of the gifts.

Laurali: that was the conclusion we drew, too.

Also, it would probably help to have a longer party, so more people could attend, and one which is not in a private home.  As we found out repeatedly on Friday, if the host or hostess gets disconnected, every guest is kicked out of the house.

  • Aw. You're welcome. Glad people enjoyed it. :)

P.S. want to add that Aniloverl and glum pudding helped in a big way :D
Posted 16 months ago by Cupcake Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm sure it was a bit annoying to Cupcake when she got disconnected, and then had to answer all the knocks on her door again when she got back. However, I know I found it to be kind of amusing to suddenly be dumped in a pile of Glitchen on her doorstep!
Perhaps a future party could be more along the lines of a White Elephant gift exchange - you have to show up to participate, and bring a gift, and maybe we could use our dice to determine the order of who gets to pick from the pile of gifts... just a thought.

Cupcake, Aniloverl and glum, we all appreciate your work so we could all have a fun party! Thanks again!

  • i like the idea ZS.
we need someone to stand near the signpost. anyone who comes in will be asked if they are here for the party and if they have a gift. its just a thought. maybe we can switch players every few mins so others get to have a chance to enjoy the party.
Posted 16 months ago by GiaTori Subscriber! | Permalink
  • i might need other people to help with the party.
cause i just cant do all of the extra bag buying and extra gifts myself.
Posted 16 months ago by GiaTori Subscriber! | Permalink
  • This sounds like a lot of fun, and I'm sure it'll be worth the work. I like the random dice rolling idea to determine either order or who you trade with.
Posted 16 months ago by rorschach Subscriber! | Permalink
  • How about using notes?
The gift exchange could take place at a given time (or multiple times even) at which point everyone there drops a note with their name on the ground and picks up another note. The person whose note you've got, is the recipient of your gift.

This way it doesn't require a lot of time/bags and only the people that actually show up can participate.

In Holland this is how we exchange gifts at Sinterklaas (Dutch version of christmas); we draw random slips of paper, buy a gift for that person, write a poem to go with it and exchange them on december 5th (for more information on this rediculous but wonderful holiday: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinte... and this explanation by Dave Sedaris: www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCU... ).

  • that note thing gives me a idea............
Posted 16 months ago by GiaTori Subscriber! | Permalink
  • at the party we each make a note with our names. put it in 1 pile so it looks like 1 note. each person picks up 1 note. no title for the note. they read the note and call the persons name. if they are there. the 2 switch gifts.

    its just a thought :)

  • I have absolutely no problem with a sense of fun and festive gift-giving, as well as consideration and helpfulness, at ANY particular time of the year.  However, Christmas and its all-pervasiveness *does* bother me--not for how it's celebrated, but how the religion that brought it to the fore forced not only it but its related memes down my throat year after year, generally with the underlying subtext that those not celebrating it were horrible people, even if it's just because (or even *especially* because) they are of another religion.  Over the years, the feeding of this meme into the American rationale of mass consumption just created a monstrous juggernaut around here that poisons everything (now often starting BEFORE Halloween).  I apologize for this angry little screed, but I rather detest the senses of isolation, hatred, emptiness and greed that this particular holiday has come to represent.
Over on Kingdom of Loathing, they do a little story every December regarding "Crimbo," which, yes, I realize is a different cultural name for the same holiday, but they present it with a type of humorous snarkiness and self-mockery that takes them a few months to plan.  Essentially, they found a way to take the poison out of it in the way they adapted it into their world, without any religious aspect to the world--indeed, when Crimbo arrives, it can pretty much be safely ignored by everyone in the game, if so desired.

I would ask for some small amount of compassion with regard to any institutionalized holiday that is made to parallel Christmas.  In return, I promise never to ask anyone here to fast on a Glitchian version of Yom Kippur or rip the hearts out of other Glitches to satisfy the Glitchian version of Tlaloc the Rain God.  (Sadly, I don't know much about Islamic, Asatru, or other spiritual observances, or I'd include them in this, too.)

  • tl;dr

Suggestion - In addition to the storage bags we have now, it would be nice to have some presents or boxes with bows or even frilly gift bags. These could hold fewer items than the bigger bags but would look like gift packages. That way we could box up several items and mail a friend a gift that actually looks like a gift. =)

  • @hazmat

I'm sorry but there is absolutely no way I will give up any of my few celebrated holidays because it doesn't coincide with someone else's religion, gender, age or whatever.  I am entitled to my personal beliefs as you are yours.
Example:  Vegetarians don't eat meat that is there right, I eat meat that is my right.  It is not their right to tell me or ask me to not eat meat and vice a versa.
I don't think its right for you to ask anyone to not celebrate holidays etc. in our game just because you don't want to celebrate them.

I am trying to say this in a nice way.

I am fed up with all the posturing over how and where and what we celebrate, I just wish people would quit stomping on other peoples parades.
Posted 16 months ago by xoxJulie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Personally, during December, I seize upon everybody's celebrations and participate in as many as I can.  Helps get through those dark nights and gloomy days.

  • I think Hazmat's concerns are valid, but, so far, I've been impressed by the way holidays have been handled.  Last December, we were given these.  Around Easter time, when testers wanted to have an egg hunt, we were able to obtain special eggs, like this one, by squeezing chickens.  I think it's safe to say that Glitch is far more interested in our worship of giants than it is in real-world holidays; however, the testers who want to celebrate any occasion are certainly able to do so without imposing on others.

  • reset might get in the way of planning... what are we going to do?
Posted 16 months ago by GiaTori Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Plan A and Plan B and Plan C

Plan A as if resets occurs after holidays,

Plan B downgrade Plan A smaller gifts, no bags, easy public place to meet no teleporting or keys, small number of people to sort etc., start a new group for everyone to stay in touch.  I'm sure there has to be more details I haven't even thought of.

Plan C If resets happens to close to event - Abandon Plan A and Plan B go for event in 2012
