Quota system for shared foodpile in Ajaya Bliss (take some, leave some)

This idea is being proposed to prevent large scale theft of shared foodpiles in places such as Ajaya Bliss.

We have a great group of people who love to mine and who donate freely to the food pile in order to help other miners keep their energy up, however more and more frequently selfish Glitches enter the cave, scoop up all the food, and promptly disappear.

I won't name names, or point fingers, but there are a few Glitches in particular that seem to get a kick out of thieving from the community and have no remorse whatsoever.

So I would like to propose a quota system for places that have shared food piles, such as Ajaya. The principle is simple: You have to maintain a positive share ratio in order to pick up food. In other words, you have to donate to the pile in order to pick anything up. The more you donate, the more you can pick up in times of emergency. The point here is to keep the pile alive and prevent it from disappearing in the wink on an eye.

tl;dr Minimize griefing! Let us enforce a "Take some, leave some" approach instead of allowing Bad Glitches to get away with the "Take it ALL" approach.

  • I like the idea. There could be a little barrel or box in which Glitches place the food that keeps track if your take/give ratio.

  • Let's not enforce any small group's rules on everyone else who plays Glitch.

How about, instead, that a group share among itself via trading  rather than having the devs code your playing style into the game?

  • Despotism has no place in Glitch.

Unless, of course, I am the despot

  • Background: I am a regular (though less frequent than in the past) miner in Ajaya. I support the foodpile, and am always irked when it's gone.
That said, WindBorn is right. It is a playing style, and it shouldn't be forced on everyone. Besides, the good feeling of community sharing would be completely ruined if we were forced to share.

  • @Kerlick

Yes, and I was giving my response to your idea.  I want to let the devs know that I, for one, don't want this idea to be incorporated into the game.

  • AB is an unwelcoming place for the vast majority of Glitchen. A clique has decided on it's own rules and tries to impose this on everyone else. Newcomers are not welcomed but excluded. If you don't want to play by the clique's rules you are harangued.

Get rid of the food pile completely. Take your own food. You obviously play with friends, so if you run out ask for help, either to be RK'd or for food.

TS should not use a second of a devs time to make a change that encourages any type of play that allows small groups to force their play style on everyone else

  • We can't force anyone how to play. Also, it's a public street. Anyone can take how much of what they want. It's sitting there, up for grabs.

  • You all have fair points. I was a little cranky this morning when I wrote this. I just wish there was a way to make the asshats go away.

  • I remember way back in the day when I was an energy-poor young Glitch. The take-something, leave-something pile was useless for me! I had nothing to donate, so I didn't feel I could take anything.

    And I really NEEDED energy.

Really, if you're going to have a food pile, accept that there will be an imbalance between donators and takers. There just will. The donators are glitchen with the resources to AFFORD giving energy (in the form of food/currant value) away.

The energy-poor needy Glitchen will thank you. The Robby McStealerpantses will still scoop everything up and laugh, but karma will catch up with them eventually.

  • A better solution might be a vending machine type idea (that has been proposed before) allowing people to take only a certain amount.

As a supporter of the AB food pile in the past I still have never understood the "you must leave things" mentality. Yes it is good if you take an awesome stew and you could leave a few ingredients, for example, but people might not have that option. And I find that when people take only what they need while thinking of others it works out nicely even if they don't leave things.

(Also I've seen plenty of newcomers welcomed.)

edit: the above comment was written while I was writing this - and yes, exactly.

  • I understand both sides of this conversation, I really do.  In spending some time thinking about it, I come down on the side of no rules being written about said food piles.  I have my own personal belief in how I should conduct myself in terms of food piles, but I understand and respect people and their choices to play differently.  If it is your style to put food down as often as you take food, so be it, that is your choice.  Similarly, if you choose to take food only, for whatever reason.....you're a newbie and have none, you're a thieving buffoon and you don't care, you have no idea there is any kind of protocol on such things and you see something on the ground and you pick it up.....then that too is a valid style of play.

As with life, we all make choices in how we conduct ourselves. The notion that we can or SHOULD control others' game play is silly to me.  It is no one's 'right' to say what is the right way....whichever we choose is right for us....personal morals and opinions will always be felt, but no one's are 'better' than others and should be adopted as everyone else's.  The unique, friendly, and sharing atmosphere of this game...a real positive point for me personally to continue to play the game...would not be actual or real if it were, in essence, be written into the rules.  I think that would be a real loss for us all.

  • Pascale and diaveborn, I hear what you're both saying but I'm talking specifically about people who come in, take the entire pile, and leave. They don't mine with us. They don't chat with us. They just take the food and leave.

+1 for a smart vending machine however.

traveljojo, as always, your words are wise. lobe, lobe, lobe.

  • The only mechanism along these lines that I would consider acceptable is a picnic/buffet concept that has been tossed around elsewhere.  The event can be created on any public or private street by the host.  Similar to a party, the host can issue invites as to who can participate.  Anyone that is part of the event can contribute or take, and the host can throw out anybody they think is abusing the privilege.  This has the benefit of not having to account for imbalance between poor and rich players, but the disadvantage that people can obviously be excluded in an area like Ajaya.

  • Personally I've had some bad experiences as a young glitch entering AB and Neva Neva - people were not very understanding when I "disobeyed" the wishes of the groups who were regulars in these spaces. I was harassed and even called names and demeaned.

If you drop things expect them to get picked up. End of story, stop bitching.

  • Enforced cooperation sort of takes the interest out of the game for me.

The AB crowd is trying to enforce a certain play style and they can get pretty nasty about it.  I'm honestly not surprised the food pile is getting taken given how unfriendly the AB regulars can get towards players who are new to AB.

You can share food in the game as-written without needing to impose food pile rules on players.  In the street projects someone would say "hey, I'm out of energy" and we'd pass them some food or hit them with RK.  The food goes to the person who needs it and there is no risk of theft.

  • "don't take it all" is a pretty common rule in real life too, but the devs do have more important things to work on imo.

  • Hm. I like the vending machine idea a bit better. If people had food, why would they be taking it from the pile? They wouldn't have anything to give.

And, I'm a regular miner at AB. I haven't seen one new person treated unkindly, but perhaps it just hasn't happened while I am there. But, if you think the majority of us are just going to set on some newb for not knowing what we do there... you're wrong.

  • We can't make anyone play a certain way. Maybe they are annoying you and you think they're a jerk, but they're not doing anything wrong.
Posted 8 months ago by AwesomeCardinal2000 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I agree with everyone who has stated that you can't force your play style on everyone in the game.  It's common knowledge that anything dropped on a public street is free for the taking, so you can't blame people for taking food from a "community food pile."

I like what Lucille said.  Don't have a pile of food on a public street. If you're doing a group activity, and you need energy, just ask.  That way people can help you out with food or RK, and there's nothing for these so-called "thieves" to take.

The second some small, not-too-friendly group's play style becomes the required play style of this game, I'll be out.

  • I figure if I set food down....it's set down, I don't care who takes it.  I would never expect something in return for my "donation". If it is bothersome to you just don't set anything down and refrain from mentally policing the pile.

  • My view on the "take some leave some" idea has always been this: Take some if you need it, leave some if you can. Of course not take and leave all in a row because that doesn't help anyone, does it? But "take some" now when you're energy low, and it would be really nice later if you could dump something. But if you can't because you're a newbie with limited resources, that's fine too. Someone else will pick up the slack. Also, I'll add to Seer's point: I've never seen newbies treated anything but nicely in Ajaya.
Posted 8 months ago by Fernstream Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think you should take what you need from the pile when your energy is low, but don't take the whole pile. I used to mine at ajaya, pretty much like everyone else. There was not one newbie that came in that was treated anything but nice. Also, when you go mining, go prepared. Go on a nibbling spree before you go, buy some food or make it. It a good idea to bring RK with you to repay the favor if someone helps you out :)

  • I totally disagree with this idea. I have only been to AB about three times, but when I'm there I have always brought enough meat, milk, and my personal favourite, teal white triangle keys to leave on the ground or give to random people as well as feed myself. I once picked something up from the food pile just to try it out but have never felt the need to depend on these. I think if I drop food or items for others then its up to them to decide to take it or leave it, not me.
