Does the all-consuming struggle for survival ever end?

I haven't tried to play since the reset, and I didn't get very far before it, but for me it was nothing but a constant struggle for survival, punctuated by pop-up messages continually getting in the way of what I was trying to do. Did anyone else feel that way at the beginning, and if so, when did it start getting better?

  • What do you constitute as "survival"? Not dying? If so, I don't really know what you're talking about. Keeping energy up is quite easy, for me at least - just carry around some food, a frying pan, and a few ingredients, and you're set.

  • Srsly, I just get by on meat. AND I still end up with extra to sell at auction.

It's a little tedious at the beginning, sure, but meh. I was never bothered by the quest popups.

  • Do you cook, Ferond? Determine the highest-calorie food you can make and make tons of it. Since one only has x number of space to store things, if I am going to cook, I make sure to cook a ton of that specific food. That way I can have 12 meals fit into one slot.

Also, if you figure out what those magic meals are (the ones with the most calories), you can focus on accumulating just those ingredients -- that way you don't have a bunch of unneeded inventory and you don't waste energy gathering unneeded inventory.

During beta it took me til at least level 15 for it to get easier. This time (with knowledge under my glitchy belt) it hasn't been a problem at all.

  • I'm talking about when you first started playing.

  • I have WAY more than I need.  I didn't even die before I was level 17 after the reset and that was only because I was very distracted when I was playing and cooked more food than I had energy to do so.  :-P  When I was a low level character before the reset, I didn't understand how to stay alive very well and I died.  A lot.  I didn't quite grok that I needed to keep my rock learning things so I could make a better life for my glitchling for far too long.

  • Okay, those replies answer my question, except that I still have no idea how many hours I will have to play before it gets better. Thank you!

  • Oh, for THAT question, I have an answer: Five to ten, on average. YMMV. :) There's a learning/fun curve. You are currently in the low part of the slump, but if you push through it for a bit longer, it  will get better. :)

  • I'd say that depends on the player, Ferond. And since you've said you were no longer interested in playing... it could take you YEARS! :)

(Less time if you apply the incredibly awesome tips I supplied above.)

  • @emdot: Thanks for the tips! I'm still wavering, trying to decide if the possibilities for social development make it worth continuing. Right now my main problem is that it's taking too much time and energy away from the rest of my life, so I might have to give it up even if I want to continue.

  • OMG I wish you could "thank" posts on this forum or at least quote them.  If you could I would totally thank emdot for that post, for I believe it to be fabulous.

When I say that post I mean this one...

  • The thread "My Glitch is starving" answers my question whether anyone else has ever had the same problem.

  • At some point you will notice that you need to go to some effort to die on purpose... It gets exponentially better as you learn skills and your energy level increases every time you level up.
