Alternate accounts, families on Glitch, TS tyranny, Currants

My girlfriend is playing Glitch, so we log in with the same IP address when she comes over to make me a sandwich (:P), but since the rule is you can't log in at the same time, we respect that. But if TS was to make a rule that no contact can be made with Glitchen that log in from same IP (like in most other games) the gameplay quality would be greatly reduced. I sometimes steal stuff from her house or make a mess, she does the same to me and we laugh and enjoy this fun game. On the other hand, as I already stated in another post, it is theoretically possible to buy 50 houses from 50 different accounts and become Glitchschild or Glitchefeller or Glitchoros, and that just ain't fair.

So, I propose a vote - and I hope TS will consider it, unless they figure out some awesome other method to solve this, because it will hugely influence how the community will feel about Glitch in the future.

If you don't care about the advantage some Glitchen get for their account manipulation and think it's a small price to pay for having TS off your back when your parents/partner/kid/burglar log in their account from your computer and send you a Rube cubimal you've wanted for so long - VOTE *A*

If you'd rather bother with reporting IP sharing and explaining reasons for an accidental contact, BUT play fair and be in a cheat free environment - VOTE *B*

* There's a chance TS will ignore this because I'm a troublemaker.
** Tl;dr: Vote A and make me rich, baby!

  • IP sharing isn't a reasonable method of policing anymore and hasn't been for awhile. Many Many Many connections to the net these days are NAT'd like you describe to preserve what IP space providers have.  There are other ways.

Besides, what you are describing is less of an issue than 1 master and 50 mule accounts owning 51 houses between them I think.

  • MrVolare, how do they know the difference between mules and real players unless they are checking them manually? And we sure don't want them doing that with all the other work they have on their hands.

  • I vote c.

  • Bender, I don't know TS's backend, so I don't know how they themselves would do it. I know some other games have scripts for looking for certain stat changes and flagging them to be looked at. I too would hope it wasn't being done completely manually.

My point is simply that there are too many shared IPs out there for that to be considered reasonable way to check this. When I was in school, my entire university was banned from Asheron's Call because every dorm was NAT'd through the same IP and they assumed 25 accounts from that IP was a hack attempt.  It got cleared up, but since then, shared IPs have become more and more the norm.

  • I question this as well. My husband and sister want to play but I said no because if they did we could get all our accounts banned. My husband would love to come play the game with me and so would my sister, but sadly we don't because of course we share the same IP and don't want to be accused of having more than one account or playing at the same time due to being accused we have mules.

  • @MrVolare - Well then you are an optimist regarding *unless they figure out some awesome other method to treat this* part, but in case they don't find a better solution, we should let them know what our stance is.

  • I play right next to my husband of an evening. Both on the same sofa, same net connection. We share a lot of things but neither of us take unfair advantage of the other. They cant do checking via IP address, it just cannot work. They may have other means, I hope they figure something out soon so that Casombra and her family can play together. I like having a little friendship in game.

  • Yes, I definitely agree. I live with a little brother and sister, and although the brother's probably too ~old and mature for this, I've been trying to get my sister to play for ages because it's a cute game that (mostly) I'd feel comfortable pointing her towards. I don't want to be banned if she does start playing.

  • Your wording is a bit 'strong', I do not see TS as 'being on my back': until they post otherwise, they have allowed alts,as long as they do not create an unfair advantage. =)
     *A* ~because I just want to socialise and chat with my friends, but I also just want to quietly play, without having to struggle/fight over resources of any kind. If someone's behavior is causing damage to others, I trust TS to sort it out;
but if someone has developed a style of play, which allows him/her to achieve his/her goals without harming other players, then I say live and let play. People have said (on more than one occasion) that role-playing is fun,to me the ultimate role-playing would be having two accounts (perhaps TS could limit the number of alts, one player can legally have, to two/three??),or perhaps better two avatars who can be developed as individuals, without being banned from 'interacting' with each other the same way each would 'interact' with other friends.
And then there are people who share their home/life with family and/or friends, they shouldn't be penalised for wanting to enjoy some quality time together, playing Glitch.
I do see the problems,if people create accounts purely for the purpose of manipulating the game and fellow players, but I totally trust TS to deal with such people individually, without the need to harness the community of players as a whole.

  • Wow nice slanted options, might be better if you didn't use quite such perjorative words to outline your two options, at least if you actually want an answer to your question, or did you just want people to agree with you?
Posted 12 months ago by SacredBob Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The thing is... we are mostly adults playing this game and the rules are a bit stiff as I see it. I don't see how much can be taken advantage of other players. I like to play a bit on my own now and the things I do with other players is a party or chatting or going around gifting people with food, drink, or random kindness!

I don't get involved in "community things" and I don't like the coop mining and stuff like that. Community halls? Not interested really as I don't see how they will do much for me. I am a player that likes to come on and putz around with this or that. One day I like to go off and mine (omg not in AB or NN though!), another day go around and harvest trees and hit Ix for spice, another day to go to the yukky bogs and get gas. Some days I only come on to feed my piggies and collect the milk and meat collectors and take care of my trees.

The only time I use the auction is when I sell stuff I have too much of but rarely buy anything at all because I am one of those players that pride myself on self-sufficiency.  Am I rich? Nope but I am happy and I have just enough currents to cover the few needs I have.

  • Has it actually been stated anywhere that TS will be using IP addresses to look for mule accounts?  As far as I can tell there has been one ban due to muleing and rather than talk it out with TS it looks like he took his ball and went home.

Yes, this would affect me too as I live with my boyfriend and we play together on our own accounts at the same time.  But I think unless TS has made an actual statement that they will be checking for duplicate IPs to identify mules (which I think is infeasible for the reasons others have mentioned) then everyone should just relax.
Posted 12 months ago by Space Core Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @SacredBob - English is not my mother tongue so if I sound pejorative, it's unintentional, although I don't think I do because I've made both options look pretty bad, thus making this choice between bad and worst, which is quite objective.
Also, I don't see how do I want people to just agree with me if I'm making a point that there might be a third, unique TS option, besides the two obvious ones.

  • Blanky has already stated she will come back soon with an updated Comm guideline and perhaps ToS that will clarify many gameplay aspects. In my opinion, any discussions on the subject until then are either:

    a) Due to having too much free time and / or RL energy and not having a better avenue for spending either, or
    b) Intentionally provoking, to cause stir, trouble and in general negative emotion towards an already heated topic.

Based on the current thread title, I'm leaning towards b)... TS tyrrany?

    Disclaimer:
I'm by no means saying anyone should or should not start such discussions; freedom of speech and stuff. These are only my views towards them and the (same) persons endlessly fueling the same topics over and over again :P

Seriously no company would rely solely on IP addy to determine alts and mules...not if they had even the smallest fraction of experience with online communities. And these guys? They have it. They get it. No worries.

  • @Heatseeker - The purpose of this topic is to make the Glitch community an active member of the process of updating ToS. If we don't discuss this, they just might come up with an IP sharing solution (or something similarly crappy) and it is in all our best interests to *try* to prevent that from happening.

I honestly don't see the reason behind judging this topic and making it something it isn't. Please express your opinions regarding the matter stated in the opening post, not the post itself - if you want to contribute, that is.

Also, the vote is not on topic title, that's just for getting the attention.

  • Right... the other thread you started about ToS wasn't enough? The very same feedback you're asking for now on friends / family / dog / parrot playing Glitch at the same time is quite consistent in there.

Posted 12 months ago by Heatseeker Subscriber! | Permalink
  • No it is not, the feedback there, and the topic itself, was focused on whether or not it was against the rules to have alt accounts, this topic and hopefully the feedback, after you stop trolling, is about the method of handle this behaviour. Dude, if you don't find this topic constructive, don't bother, it's not worth it.

  • Just wait and see what they say.
They can also just differ if two people are under one roof, but have two PCs via computer serial numbers, or a PC's individual number.
That is how Puzzle Pirates worked. They'd ban the computer, and not the whole IP.

In the meanwhile, those sharing a computer, don't make it look like you are muleing.

I now have to make an alt to buy a sub, since you can't buy subscriptions withiut then recurring.

  • Every device on the interweb has is own unique MAC address, while some people may be behind a router with NAT, it's still possible to distinguish via IP. That being said I love Glitch and finally after many moons got my wife to sign up, thanks for the nudge option TS. It's something fun we can do together while our little ones are asleep in the room next to us. I not trying to "win" the game, just playing, making friends, and enjoying the quests.

(One of them is mine, so I get to play the most :P) It would be very hard for us to play at all if only one could play from an IP... :(

I love this game, but not being able to play the same game as my family would steal a lot of the fun!

  • My wife lives next door to me in game (and, of course, with me in RL).   We often play together.  We share keys.  She comes over and harvests my spice trees.  I sometimes go harvest her trees.  We take care of each others RHK  chores sometimes.   I give her jewels.  She makes me oaty cakes.   I sincerely hope and doubt TS is going to crap on that.

CA - the bogs are a whole different way to experience the game.  You should move there and open your mind, and stop chasing badges quite so hard.

  • I may be jumping to conclusions here, but I am assuming that TS has ways to look at HOW two accounts using the same IP are played. Sure, perhaps it flags it if two accounts are on the same IP at the same time. But then they can probably tell by looking at the activity of the two and see if it looks like they are being played by the same person (swapping of activity, excessive use of following, etc, etc).

Seeing as I have YET to hear any reports of two people using the same IP being suspended, I am assuming they are doing this.

My vote: To let Tiny Speck do what they do and not try to second guess them. If there was a rash of families having accounts suspend? Maybe that might be worthy of worrying. But I haven't seen it. I have yet to see the slightest sign that TS is either (A) callous or (B) idiots.

  • Good grief!

TS has not said (because it would be complete nonsense to say it) that only one account can be created per IP address or per computer or per any other method that people might use when more than one person uses a single device.

This is trolling pure and simple, an attempt to outrage the community with false information.

For those of you who want to invite your friends/roommates/relatives to play:  Invite them!

TS has not indicated at all that they want to limit access in this way.  Those of you who are afraid that sharing a computer will make TS think are creating a mule:  here's a new internet slang term to learn FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt).

This thread is nothing but an attempt by someone who refuses to believe that TS knows what it is doing to get you upset.  If you are upset, it's because someone has spread FUD and you fell for it.

I play at a friend's house all the time.  We are using the same internet router and on at the same times.  There is no way that TS is going to confuse how I play the game with how he plays the game.  There's a lot more to it than IP address.

I don't think so.  I think this is drama for drama's sake.  Even people with quite rudimentary knowledge of how the internet works know that is not a solution.  The folks who created Flickr and are now creating Glitch have a lot more internet savvy than that.

Posted 12 months ago by Zoethor2 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yes, Zoethor2, they are working on that document and have said they will provide it when it has been completed.

Until they have come to agreement amongst themselves about what is and is not allowed, it would only make things worse if different staff members posted their differing views of what's allowed.

Different staff members posting different views is what got us into this quagmire in the first place.

  • I've seen people using bots on follow to mine double amounts more than once. When they start to do some shutting down on this problem, they'll have plenty on their hands before they start having issues with families using the same computers.

  • I play, My wife plays a little, one of my sons started... and no one has given us any grief about it so I fail to see the problem.  I'll start worrying about this if TS says that my wife, sons, and I can't help each other in-game.

And we shouldn't worry about shared IP addresses, every system has a unique mac address making it pretty easy to determine that accounts are being played on different systems as apposed to multiple browsers on a single system.

  • What is the fuss? If alternate accounts are not open at the same time, whats the difference? Maybe multiple accounts should have to have subscriptions. Geez, next will there be a rule that I can't be online when my sister plays (she resides at a separate address)because we might help each other and THAT is also an unfair advantage? What does one glitches game have to do with another? What do I care if someone has more money and levels, would rather leave all this crap in real life. Aren't we here to get away from it all? • Casombra Amberrose: actually that's not true. While I disagree with the idea of banning alts (in any form) anyone who has all the badges & trophies, has completed every quest, and is level 60, has pretty much beaten Glitch (in it's current form).

Having an alt could easily help you do this, a prime example being the extremely insane Game of Crowns badge that requires over 27 straight hours of holding the crown. If you had 2 alts you could easily play over and over again to get this badge faster than anyone else.

Fact:  Any two players can be logged in at the same time from the same IP address under the current rules.

What you cannot do is have your main and your alt logged in at the same time.  If two (or 3 or 4) different players are logged in, it's fine.  But one player controlling two characters is not.

  • As for alts, I would just like TS to use the terms of their own Community Guidelines.

"Using bots, mules, or other hacks to gain significant and unfair advantage in the game is not allowed."

Honestly, I think the auction-sniping scripts come closer to the meaning of this statement than most people's alts.

"Multiple accounts controlled by one person playing at the same time is not allowed."

In other words, not every alt is considered a mule or a bot by TS. Their original objection was to two accounts on at the same time.

What changed? The big herb price wars suddenly made it a "significant" advantage to use an alt to get herb plots. I still don't see how it would be an "unfair" advantage, since if it were allowed then any players who wanted to could buy a bog house without having to sell the nice house they already live in. Despite all the anguish about herb prices, there are dozens of houses right now empty in Chakra Phool and elsewhere with herb plots. The original objection was to "significant AND unfair" advantage. It is only unfair if conscientious people refrain from using the strategy because they think it's not allowed while others just do it and reap the benefit. Clarification would be very welcome.

  • What Lord Lalo said.. "The game isn't competitive, so who cares what advantages other people get." Agree.

@Windborn - "False information:  the rule is you can't log in at the same time, we respect that.

Fact:  Any two players can be logged in at the same time from the same IP address under the current rules.

What you cannot do is have your main and your alt logged in at the same time.  If two (or 3 or 4) different players are logged in, it's fine.  But one player controlling two characters is not."
    - How could TS KNOW if it is one player, two players, 50 million players on the same IP or just ONE player multi-boxing from the same IP?" See the problem? How could TS even know if that is the case?

What because say a husband/wife, girlfriend/boyfriend, etc share keys, currents, trade goods with one another that they are cheating or have an advantage over Jimmy or Sally? My husband I play WoW together, we share in game money, he enchants my gear I make him potions and food. I also have two accounts with several  characters on the same server on WoW. Each one has different trade-skills which I share between them all. That is not considered cheating either.  My sister that lives with us is in the same boat.
BUT because of the fear here that if we play together on this game and how confusing the rules are at this time they have not rolled an account and I have quit paying for my subscription until such time this is sorted out.

I have a friend that has a character on this game but we have decided that we will no longer play together at the same IP address. She used to come here to my house, log in together and play together (she lives an hour drive from us and comes to spend the weekend with us). We no longer do that for fear we would lose our accounts.
