Project task pledging

I wrote a big reply proposing a different way to how one can contribute to Projects, discouraging all the bad behaviors (campers!) and encouraging & rewarding good behaviors (gatherers and active contributors). It was in a thread in the General forum but I realized that it should've just been posted as an Idea here. However, to avoid duplication here is a simple link to my Pledges proposal.

  • The bad and good behavior bit is arbitrary. If I want to unload my planks and beryl, I'm going to sit at the project until it needs them. You could do the same. This would totally remove any sentiment of remaining competition from the game. The underlying issue is still simply managing projects (where they are, what's needed, etc). A central project page (like the auctions or skills) fixes it.

  • But you won’t know that a project needs planks and beryl until you get to it, and if you happen to have those items on you in goal-reaching quantities then good on you, but that seems like an unlikely scenario to be true for each and every project going on. Unless you carry a max. number of Bigger Bags each filled with a max number of items…?

  • It would remove "camping" mid-projects, but would definitely not remove "camping" before projects popped. In fact, it might increase it. People will want to jump one the ones that are easy to fulfill.

And I would worry about the same resources being pledged over and over by different people... and then folks getting pretty upset that the project just gets delayed more and more. True, it would be hard for on griefer to disrupt a project... but a group could disrupt a project greatly. Perhaps if each block of resource could only be pledged once by ANYONE and then was opened.

Might be interesting to see how it would effect things.

  • I think pledging will only cause even more irritation among players. There are plenty of ways that letting people reserve spots for donations will make others angry, and I don't think we need more of that... (I posted a more detailed response to this in the original thread).

  • don't like this so much.

i don't see how it would encourage collaboration, after you pledge, you go on your merry way until you are done. you've got your set task and there's no real reason to talk with anybody.

plus it doesn't so much benefit "community" as it benefits people who camp in order to pledge first.

it also adds an additional level of complexity.
