Other uses for paper?

I've seen the woodworking thread, and it occurs to me that something similar could be done to expand the use of paper.  Sure, notes are great, but what about other things we use paper for?  I assume at some point there will be a mail system, or at least I hope there would be, and it'd be neat if we can craft our own cards or create wrapping paper to mail gifts to friends we can't find online.

I tend not to use paper for writing in real life, it's for origami!  And in the social manner of the world of glitch, it might be nice to get people together and fold a thousand cranes for peace or other things like that.  These items could be used as decorations, and there are a lot of paper (or tissue) flower designs that could prettify homes.

Heck, it would even be amusing to have an emote to throw a paper airplane.

  • Cool suggestions, Riversong! I agree that there should be other uses for paper, especially since it grows on trees, and all :)

  • It could even tie back into the Bureaucratic arts because one would need to conform to regulations for postal services.  It's actually kinda sad that in the US, envelopes actually have to conform to certain dimensions and you can no longer send letter-folds via the mail.

  • What's a "letter-fold"? My naive guess would be that is when you just take a piece of paper and make your own envelope (maybe out of the letter itself?) I know that there were businesses that did that in the past (my pay checks used to come in the mail that way), but I can't recall if I've seen it recently.

  • Yeah, the good ones are designed so you write your note on one side, and fold it, maybe with a piece of tape, and the blank side becomes the "envelope."  You can still mail a trifolded letter, but you can't do the more custom envelopes or stationary.  It's supposedly because the machines can't handle it.

  • Yes! I vote for origami skills and paper airplane quests! Currently I use the paper to write notes and drop in friends' houses or at their doorsteps if they aren't in-game. I also leave a welcome note on the floor of my apt for visitors.

It would also make a good bribe for the Bureaucrocs. Say you apply for a building permit and it costs a certain amount of currants. And then they go "we can approve that right away if you slip us 100 sheets of paper..."

Perhaps we can write poems and notes to donate to the Giants as well? That could certainly be worth a randomly-generated favor point scale.

  • Oh!  How about paper lanterns that you could fill with fireflies.  Apparently I've been spending too much time with origami on the brain.  I blame the Fujimoto Hydrangea theme I've been on.  Tessellations are addicting.

  • Ooh, I like these ideas. Maybe we could fold some origami cranes and attach them to trees or or the ceilings of our homes for some holiday-to-come. If there were bodies of water, we could make little paper boats which would float on the water for a while (maybe there would be different types of paper?). Paper is a versatile thing.

  • Water is a tough one unless you don't mind it being static.

  • I love the paper lanterns for fireflies idea. What an awesome party that would be!

  • Paper Boatimals? Paper Planimals?  Use the cubimal code in different environments with modified art assets and you could make boats and airplanes work.

I like all of these ideas.

I would love to see paper lanterns floating on a lake for an homage to the  Japanese Tōrō nagashi.
