On the EOTW, and its approaching rebirth. (aka The Next Test)

You guys really threw down on Wednesday. Whoa. We were glued to our screens with a sense of wonderment and, at times, mischievous glee as you dumped all of your possessions and battered against the very limits of the game. Huzzah! For the nostalgia-prone amongst you and for those who missed out, links to some stunning screenshots:

Emblem mountain in Feman Falters
Chain of orbs in Valia Shede
Discovery of floating cubimals
The party that choked hell

Now, on to the next test. Couldn't help but notice all the cries of WWIO around here, and thought, "What the heck, why don't we just put them out of their misery."

So: We are aiming to open on Tuesday (September 20th) - OPEN NOW

What are you in for? Your future is bright, your pockets are light. You'll go through the tutorial one last time and you'll decide which of several streets in Groddle you'll resurface on to seal your reincarnation. And *we* will be glued to our screens once more.

  • Thanks so much for the details, Stoot - it makes perfect sense that you'd want to delay the test for that reason. It sounds like it will make game play a lot better once it's implemented.

Thanks for all you've done so far - sorry y'all are getting sick! Don't work too hard!

  • Stoot, (same as @g33kgurrl) thanks for sharing about the multiple location swfs. That rocks and I'm sure it will make a huge difference. Just wanted to say your transparency in this... you taking the time to not only respond, but tell us exactly what you were working on... that speaks volumes about how much you love/care for us, the devs, and the game itself.

  • Fark, indeed, g33k! I imagine that's pretty much exactly how it played out!

This of it this way, gang. Usually a test opens on Wednesday, so we'll be getting in a day EARLY!

  • The electricity went off at my office earlier, and we were very close to being sent home. I was thinking, "Darn, if we get to go home, it would've been perfect timing for the opening of Glitch had it not been delayed!" Unfortunately they figured out what was wrong and got the electricity back on. So no early home time for me today. :(

It's okay though. I think Weds might be a better day to get sick than Tues. >.>

Thanks for the update on the opening, disappointing as it may be!

  • The test being pushed back has been the best news I've heard all days. I can't thank TS enough for this.

The reason is, I have an EE Midterm tonight and really need to study. If the test were on, I wouldn't be studying one bit.

    <3 LOVE YOU GUYS.

  • Oh, dear, so sorry to hear that some of the folks are sick, stoot...Olive Leaf Extract...I swear by it for colds/flus...really, you should keep a ton of it on hand to keep the staff healthy...especially you folks in CA probably liking those herbals...put down the Silvertongue and Purple...and go for the OLE.

Thanks for the team working so hard...and look forward to the opening tomorrow.  Hope y'all feel better soon too!

  • To the chorus of well-deserved thank-yous and applauses, I'd like to add a question -- how do you take a screenshot of the whole map like that?  Do you have to be a giant or can any of us tiny glitches do it?
Posted 15 months ago by Pale Queen Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Any idea if it will be afternoon Glitch time or earlier than that?  I'm actually already thinking about taking a 1/2 day tomorrow (if nothing else to get a nap before some marathon Glitching)...but trying to figure out my day...thanks bunches!

  • Well, I had the cold today too, so wasn't really up to much... although I'm sure that wouldn't have stopped me totally.  Hope you all get some rest and feel better... nothing much worse than God with the sniffles!  See you all tomorrow, although I have to work first.... will be chomping at the bit all day to get home and get started.  :-)
Feel Better!!!  Oh, and b3achy, I'll have to give that a try if I can find it.  Thanks for the tip!

  • Reading all of this made me think of a blog post by writer Neil Gaiman in response to a reader's questions a few years ago (this may be TL:DR for people, but still...):

The question: "When writing a series of books, like (George) Martin is with "A Song of Ice and Fire" what responsibility does he have to finish the story? Is it unrealistic to think that by not writing the next chapter Martin is letting me down, even though if and when the book gets written is completely up to him?"

Neil Gaiman's answer (in part): "Yes, it's unrealistic of you to think George is "letting you down".

Look, this may not be palatable...and I keep trying to come up with a better way to put it, but the simplicity of things, at least from my perspective is this:

George R.R. Martin is not your bitch.

This is a useful thing to know, perhaps a useful thing to point out when you find yourself thinking that possibly George is, indeed, your bitch, and should be out there typing what you want to read right now. People are not machines. Writers and artists aren't machines.

You're complaining about George doing other things than writing the books you want to read as if your buying the first book in the series was a contract with him: that you would pay over your ten dollars, and George for his part would spend every waking hour until the series was done, writing the rest of the books for you.

No such contract existed. You were paying your ten dollars for the book you were reading, and I assume that you enjoyed it because you want to know what happens next.

It seems to me that the biggest problem with series books is that either readers complain that the books used to be good but that somewhere in the effort to get out a book every year the quality has fallen off, or they complain that the books, although maintaining quality, aren't coming out on time."

...so while Glitch isn't a book series, and I too am sad that I get to spend the evening doing (marginally) useful things, including sleeping, I know Glitch will go live again. I know the devs are working their arses off. And while I have a subscription, at this point, they don't owe me a damn thing. Glitch is (as yet) an unfinished product, and I'm glad they're taking the time to get it right. If they need time to get better, I hope they take that time too.

    George is not my bitch.

    George is not my bitch.

  • kat65, any good health food or vitamin store should have some...you won't find it in the normal vitamin aisle of most drug/grocery stores...also, plenty of sites online sell it...but you can't get it right away.  I find that even if I catch a cold, it will greatly reduce the amount of time I'm sick...so if everyone in the office is sick for a week, I'd only be sick a day or two max.  Good luck...wish I could send some to you via frog mail...hope you feel better soon too!

  • VS, I have long enjoyed that blog post and referred other people to it.  I've had a lot of sympathy for the (very) occasional outbreaks of "I paid my money - where is my 24/7 access?" behavior (which despite everyone's disappointment, I'm not really seeing today - thank the Giants).  I was a corporate communications officer for many years, and I used to cope with people calling for my head when I wasn't available whenever they wanted me right that minute.  I happened to be out of town for my best friend's wedding when our stock tanked unexpectedly and the general consensus seemed to be that I had somehow (how? why?) engineered the stock's fall and been out of the office "conveniently."

One of the participants on the Yahoo chat board for our company's stock even suggested that rape was an appropriate response to my inability (by law) to answer some of their questions.

So, having seen some of the worst that human beings can offer when they are not given what they want, I have to say that even at their worst, our community is a good'un.  A very good'un.  And not just by my own low historical standards.  Hugs to all and see you tomorrow ingame.

  • George R. R. Martin is not your bitch (The Song) Free download ftw!

    I got an e-mail from a reader
who said he loved an author
    who wrote epic fantasy

He asked me if I thought the writer
    should feel like he's required
    to finish up the series

and this is what I said:

George R.R. Martin is not your bitch
no matter how much you gripe
George R.R. Martin is not your bitch
so you might as well go get a life

I said: If you think the books are entertaining
    it's best to stop complaining
    writers just aren't machines

George Martin never signed a contract
to just work on that project
so find something else to read

    Have you tried Fevre Dream?

    Chorus

    • B3achy asks:  Any idea if it will be afternoon Glitch time or earlier than that?
    • I'm curious about that too.   Also wondering if its going to be a short test of a few days or a longer one.  If its longer and will include the upcoming weekend then there will be lots of time to explore before the launch.
