What I Don't Want to see in Glitch

Sorry if there's already a thread about this.  I couldn't find it if there is.

Some players said they had gotten "eviction notices" from their Homeowners Assn. for non-payment of dues.  Someone said stoot mentioned that property taxes would probably show up in the game at some point.  Players are talking about wanting the ability to open businesses/have jobs.

All of this sounds too much like Real Life to me.  I already have to deal with a snarky HA in RL.  Property taxes might be tolerable if they weren't exorbitant.   I DO NOT want to have a business or a job.  I play Glitch to get away from RL -- not duplicate it! :)

  • Agreed. I've seen Homeowners Assn. and other small groups. Giving them the ability to ruin the game for others just kills the experience. This is not real life and the likes of these things takes this from being fun to more work.

Perhaps these players need more quests, more areas to explore, more quality interactions with animals, or more group competitions. Perhaps they work together on achieving a group quest as they obviously like to socialize. Either way, I think that making the game twice as difficult for players of varying levels is all the stuff about life that drives us here in the first place.

What sense does it make? Right now we can harvest any tree, mine any rock, etc. Will there eventually be a tax for that? Say it ain't so.

  • There is little that it mandatory in the game. In discussing options like owning businesses - which IMO is not all that appreciably different than being entrepreneurial through the Auction but perhaps more convenient - I also don't see that as mandatory.

If you don't own a home, you don't owe due or taxes.

  • Gee, if we could only take the HOA thing a step further..  notices for planting the wrong trees or growing unapproved plants.. a special assessments every time someone poisoned a neighborhood tree and it had to be replaced... neighborhoods with different HOA dues and some with none at all. Lets add foreclosure to the mix... but first we'd have to take out home loans.. make the cheapest house like 100,000 currant.. and bam, you got a home loan waiting to happen. Oh the list can go on... fines for littering when you drop stuff. Hired security officers. Jail. I have seen stuff like this in games before... and actually... it WAS fun, but it's not for everyone. The games did take a lot of work to maintain.

  • @Sourgrapes - I don't think any game is for everyone. You can't please everyone and there will always be unhappy, crabby, crappy people.

@Devon - Yeah. That. Lots of that. :D

  • Marla, presumably the 'eviction notices' that some people have received are not enforceable? I am not aware of a facility in the game where you can evict someone else from their home!

  • Nope not heard anything about 'eviction notices',and if i had would be talking to the Devs.....

  • It could be funny, but then if people have paid these 'dues',it's not funny, especially if people are new to the game. But yes have heard about property taxes maybe in the future..:)

  • I got one of those notes,so did all my neighbors ~not funny.
Posted 18 months ago by ~Scilly~ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • But there is no way to evict a player from their home, so why the fuss? Just laugh at the writer of the note and give them a good plank. Or do people not realize these notes have no weight?
Posted 18 months ago by zeeberk Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think whoever leaves them around has too much time on their hands, but if I get one, I'll just drop it in a shrine, no big deal really.
There was a note outside a house a couple of doors down from mine saying that their house was a crack house and was devaluing the neighbourhood, and it had some no-no powder next to it. It made me laugh.
There were more and more strange notes around this last test, but they make for interesting reading. One telling me that by reading it, I had to go find a certain player (with their address printed on it) and tell them that whoever it was that wrote the note loves them lol  Kind of cute in a weird way :) Another with Kirby dance instructions lol
Like zeeberk says, they have no weight. No point worrying about them :)

  • I think that you have to be able to enjoy the game..once it becomes too serious it just loses the appeal. Some players already seem to be taking things way too seriously as it is, people just need to chill out a bit.

No to property taxes!! - I have enough of them in real life!
Posted 18 months ago by Morticia Addams Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I hope they don't go down the 'time-limited goods' road. By that I mean, endless streams of things that are available to buy for just a day or a week. I hate to use Farmville as a comparison here but the amount of goods they bring out is stupid now - they charge real money for a lot of them and instead of giving you the chance to treat yourself every now and then with the time-limited options, they cram the market full of one set of goods after another, ensuring that all but the richest people, end up missing out.

  • I found a note saying that I was entitled to some ginormous amount of currants and providing a url of the Glitch National Bank to claim it... obviously shrine fodder - but I wonder what sinister links could be left on notes for the unwary to visit?
Posted 18 months ago by snygyst Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It is a valid concern about URLs that direct outside of the Glitch sites being used by people who would otherwise seek to do harm.

    Phishing, spamming, etc.

I wouldn't want to see a banning of offsite URLs. But people need to be smart about things. Don't click on links from people you don't know. Don't click on things that tell you you will get big boobs or a giant penis if you use their product. You're not going to see pictures of dead terrorists or naked pictures of Brad Pitt or Britney Spears.

    Don't be *that* person.

  • We hear a lot about features which haven't yet been implemented.  A lot of them are unappealing to me, but since they're not actually part of the game yet, and since some of them don't seem feasible, I'm not too worried about them.  Personally, if someone asked me for currants, I'd ask for goods or services in return.  :)  The truth of the matter is that at this point in the game's development, after buying a house, tools, and bags, there's very little need for currants.  I mainly buy olive oil, parsnips, and tree poison, and the money for that can be obtained via quoin collection.  People who are trying to rook others out of their currants are just being silly.

Snygyst: the player called "en" got bored and started a banking system, so that note was actually worth currants (provided that en's the one who wrote it).  There's a group and a forum thread about the bank, if you care to look for it and figure out what it's about.
Posted 18 months ago by glum pudding Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @glum thanks for the info. I did a search and the name of the bank run by en looks similar if not the same. I expect I've fed the papers to the giants now, unless I offloaded them into my 1 million slot storage unit called the floor. I'll have to check.
But nevertheless my point still stands that malicious links could be posted on notes for the less informed to visit. I was less informed the other way on this occasion :)   *Did that make sense??*

  • I agree with not making this game "too much" like RL. There's no point, it's supposed to be fun!

I know some in-game housing usually has weekly charges. But I'm sure the Tiny Speck team could come up with something cute and unusual to call it, rather than property tax or BILLS...
Posted 18 months ago by Jessabelle Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Maybe they will install mini donation shrines on the front door of every house...if you don't donate enough currants on a regular basis, the door won't open lol
Posted 18 months ago by Morticia Addams Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It does syn, and I've been concerned about it from time to time. The rickrolling was funny, but links could be misused. I suppose there are some minor limitations on how much a player could spam the world in this manner (since Paper Trees are rare and can only be harvested once a game day)... but I too don't want to see the world littered with fliers for the latest weight loss drug, get rich quick scheme, live girls, PITA movement, or even albums of kittens - basically anything that pulls me out of my 'suspension of disbelief' game bubble.

The concept of HOA's is kind of funny... there's no 'teeth' to them, but they do provide a fun workspace for creative. They also provide a way to meet players you might not interact with normally because you happen to live close by. For example, one HOA uses a Group Discussion to figure out what the  tree / dirt / animal preferences are for members on their street... thereby opening communication lines and making a nicer place to live for the people who frequent the street. Another Group uses one of their Group Discussions to organize Fashion Shows, gift deliveries, and parties. Still another uses their Group Discussions to expand on some of the virtues of the particular house types and the different creative / sorting methods. Some HOAs also take it a step further and use the in-game Group Chat to let their neighbors talk/sort these things out on the fly.

I can see the HOA-type Groups later using the utility to encourage and potentially fund certain types of housing upgrades to create a themed look to the street... the homeowner would obviously have an option, and I see nothing wrong with the neighbors pestering a resident about it. If you don't like your neighbors or their ideas, moving isn't all that horrible.

The 'rent' or fees the TS team mentions are almost always in conjunction with trying to figure out how to
    a) clear out inactive accounts and free up the space for new players... best solution I've heard on this one is the character/account is mothballed and proceeds from the sale of the house are given to the player so they have money to purchase a new one when they get back.
    b) create additional currant sinks in the game, though the amounts described have always been extremely minor
    c) work mechanics to create options for players wanting to operate in a Landlord, Realtor, or Shop Owner capacity
    d) create a better diversity within what have become cookie-cutter neighborhoods

All are valid game reasons for 'rent', despite the fact rent/fees are some of the most unhappy RL topics.

  • What if the houses had to be "maintained" like gardens and trees and animals? Let the house go without maintaining it, and it deteriorates. If it gets too dilapidated, then the rook can come destroy it.. and it can be made a quest. Non home owners or the current owner can play the quest and if/when they win, get to put a new house there.
Posted 18 months ago by Purple Haze Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I agree with Marla and Morticia, please no taxes of association fees....even in real life these things don't work out to the best for our benefit, please don't incorporate into the game.

  • As for the bank note I have honoured such, the minimum on any note out there is 5000 currents,I have already paid to the finder one found ligit note.Ens real notes have his name and a number listed beside the GNB,there will be a series of letter and numbers attached to the note, without this verification I will not pay the owner of such forgery, into the shrine I say.En and Clare are trying to do a wonderful thing here in not only giving to some freely but also loans for a house or whatever.these notes are documented and kept on file, how many are made and how many and what number`s stll exist.Hopefully folks will accept En`s idea as a way to help folks that need.in Real Life also scammers out there, but these notes are documated and will have a ligit signature and GNB numbers. So far we have 8 in total Board members willing to help folks.

Edited to say quote"I love the idea and this is the kind of thing we'd like to see take off!

As for being able to read notes from the trade window: I just added it to a list, so someday it'll happen!

Currently, notes also "degrade" over time (I think after 20 reads?) so this would have to be worked around as well. Posted 19 days ago by stoot barfield | Permalink"

  • Why do we want any taxes?  Fire protection, police, hospitals.  Ok lets have a tax on people who want taxes or complain that they are just too darn rich, problem solved.

Who ever thought up eviction notices she have a public splanking and they should be evicted and not allowed to have a home for a month.  Being homeless must really suck.

    Hmm  !?!

Sounds like I'm taking this way too serious, so when does the game start again?

  • I love how something as simple as playing a game can point us in the direction of healing our wounds. So many times in the forums as well as in the game itself we come up against triggers for the un-dealt-with issues that cause us to cringe or flee. If we can question our reactions and keep open though the process of discovery we might just find that old beliefs which no longer serve us melt away and free us to live in greater peace. Thank you to all the wonderful players and forum posters who challenge me and give me opportunities to expand my own perspective.

    Notes from an Inner-Glitcher :)

ETA: Just want to say I found the notes to be humorous and a creative way of stirring things up in the game. It's interesting to me though to see how we all react differently.

  • I think that some of you guys are taking this way too seriously. I'll make a list & hope you'll read it.

    1. You can see who writes notes on the bottom of the note & also when they wrote it.

    2. As far as I know, there is no way to transfer currants to another user, so obviously no one was paying anyone else as a result of these notes.

    3. I've read every post in this thread & still don't really see anything wrong with the joke, and I'll probably do similar things in the future because some people think they're super funny, as I do.

p.s. some of you were infront of your house when I dropped these notes, and then asked your neighbors if they got them too -- I guess I don't understand??
Posted 18 months ago by Taylor Swift Subscriber! | Permalink
  • You can transfer currants to other players either by mailing them or by trading them (you can select a trade in which one side gives nothing and the other side gives all their currants).

But you cannot compel another player to give you currants nor can another players take something away from them (unless they drop it on a public street, which you cannot do with a house).

So, Zach, kudos to you - I thought your notes were clever and naughty and not really worth anyone stressing out about. ;-)

As for 'taxes' in game - here here!  We need currant sinks.  It's hardly as stressful as in real life - takes me about 30 minutes being lazy to come up with 20k currants out of mining.  In real life would that I could walk outside, tend my garden, harvest and sell the proceeds for enough money to cover the mortgage. In Glitch, it's a snap.  If a tax fairly well ensures that I'm hanging out playing month to month, that's hardly as slimy as what Farmville does to keep you hooked, so I'm not bothered by it.
Posted 18 months ago by zeeberk Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Outside of tax advisers/attorneys, and people/programs that do your taxes, does anyone think it would be fun to have taxes in Glitch? Hmm, maybe these professions want to be away from real life stuff also, I don't know for sure.  I have a property tax bill due now and personally when I play a game I don't want to be reminded of it.  I guess I would like my games to be fun and not like real life. This sounds simple, but says it all.
Yes, I can mine and make currants to pay for them, but would not find it fun at all.  Maybe the creatives at Tiny Speck can find a less offensive name for a currant sink, I sure hope so.
Or maybe games like Glitch are not meant to be fun all the time.

  • Thanks for not deleting your post this time Zachariah.
I got one of your notices and got a laugh from it myself. How dare a Dofsan Vex resident invade my Isalan! jk :D
Perhaps I found it funny since I found one of your subway notes the night before. Both notes put a smile on my face, and I shared them with those with whom I was chatting.

As for taxes and such, I think I understood these were going to have something to do with group halls when we get them. I could be totally of the mark as usual. I'll wait and see, but I don't see virtual money of any kind as a stressor to my gaming joy.

  • Nanookie, your Edna Snout Vincent Millay note is STILL making me giggle, and was totally harmless, so I disagree!

Having something to band together against is entertaining for a while, but I'd rather it be the placement of "sing to" on the butterfly menu than property taxes.  Taxation implies representation, goods and/or services in exchange for tax payments, etc.  Glitch's economy isn't the least bit realistic, so I don't see the need to impose every real-world aspect of an economy on people who've just come to play a fun game.
Posted 18 months ago by glum pudding Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Sayings from Epigtetus and Porkus Aurelius were my personal favorites, but thanks :D

I think taxes are a thing with possibilities, not as a currant sink, or yet another thing to bitch about in the forums, but as a narrative mover in the game.  I am not thinking of taxes on homes or businesses, that seems too obvious, unless the taxes themselves were something hilarious and ridiculous.

The bureaucratic part of Glitch is like this big juicy nectarine of fun that no can really bite into yet, and the smell is driving me crazy with anticipation.   No, taxes are not strictly speaking part of bureaucracy, but they are part of a giant RL machine that people playing Glitch could enjoy poking fun at, whether it be at the thing itself, or all the sturm and drang surrounding it.
