The currants are a LIE!

Our currants are a lie! They aren't money! They are fruit! Proof!

I only just found this out last night, when I was watching Chopped and pink currants was one of the ingredients. :o

...I'm hungry now.

(note: this is a 'fun' topic, intended to lighten the current atmosphere of the forums. Also, I'm procrastinating on homework. :D)

  • I thought they were 'cur rants', as in, the Giants protect us from the ranting and screeching of nasty people by crystallising them into something good and useful - a lovely bit of legal tender.

  • Yeah, we like to complicate things in the UK. Why have one word when you can have three?!  See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grape#Raisins.2C_currants_and_sultanas

  • Hot blackcurrant juice is the go-to cold medicine around here. And all currants are awesome in pies. Oh, now I miss my old home and the dozens of currant bushes in the backyard...

  • I love currants. Thanks for reminding me that they are going to be in season soon.

Speaking of "Rote Grütze"- all the discussions in this forum are nothing compared to the heated discussions in my family whether you puree the fruits (my mother's family recipe) or not (my father's family recipe) and whether or not you use only red and black currants or add strawberries, raspberries and (sacrilege!) cherries. :-)

  • According to Wikipedia ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ribes ) there are about 150 species of Currants. Which one is it? Mappleleaf Currant or California Currant?

Note that if you have many Currants, it is not recommended to eat them, as it will give you what the French call "la courante", that is diarrhea.
