Topic

Mining Etiquette.

I know a lot of others may feel differently but I wanted to start a discussion about this. I can't stand when someone comes and starts mining a rock that I'm still working on. Yes, we should share, but what about having the option not to? The rocks regenerate so it's not like people can't come back or find a other rock.

What I propose is, once a user has started mining a rock, if someone else tries to mine it, having a little bubble pop up for the original user asking if they'd like to share. Yes or no. Also, if a person wants to stop mining in the "middle" of a rock, they can have the option of "abandoning" it via a menu. Then it would be open to be mined by someone else. There should also be a timer that automatically makes a user abandon a rock, in case he or she is AFK in the middle of mining. Maybe 5 minutes?

What do you all think?

  • Take out "mine the rock" and insert "zap the pollution" and this same thread has gone by even more times than you can currently imagine, I've been reading it for oh, about 2 years now... and indeed the rules which are established by the game mechanics are the only rules there are or ever will be since there will always be A) New players B) Those that don't read the forums and hence don't know these player generated "rules" of conduct  C) Those who don't mind sharing and hence figure you won't either and D) A few who are aware and just don't give a you know what how anybody thinks about it. The danger comes when everyone assumes that the huge majority of these players which are in groups A-C are all D's and hence ruin their own enjoyment of the game as well as others because of a misunderstanding. One thing that is also very different now, is that the devs, in all their awesomness, ARE listening and have been adding more and more mining regions everyday to help alleviate the tension on this subject. Unfortunately, so long as there are 2 players in an area with a rock, folks can still think anyone who touches said rock, is a D, even though they are probably not.

  • @Travinara: "The mechanics are just fine IMO - it's the players who need to adjust to playing the game within the framework of *this* game"

Truth!  Probably the best thing said in this entire post.

  • Erm... I don't see the problem. In my opinion, if it's on the map, it's fair game.

Already mining it? Now you have a mining buddy.

Maybe I'm just a noob, but since I have no idea how long rocks take to regenerate, I don't want to mine more than I need. I want to leave some for other players who might need it, too. Apparently this is abhorrent behaviour xD

  • @Milx - why yes you are absolutely correct I do mean alleviate ... I'll just go fix that right now :)

  • I will endeavor to never mine a rock someone else is mining because of one of my first experiences here. When I began playing last March I had no idea that it was taboo to mine "someone else's rock" until the player that I did it to very kindly  told me, (insert sarcastic tone here), how "rude " I was being. Then as a more seasoned player I began to mine a rock someone was standing in the general area of and was  called on the carpet by that player asking me , "Do you mind?" . Now I apologized to both players , hung my head in shame and slunk away.
Now do I think either of those players were in the right? Absolutely not! Do I want some kind of controls put in place so I can't accidentally make those kinds of faux pas' ? No! Leave the game as is. This way I can gauge who I want to interact with and who is just being a dick.
And by the way I don't give a rat's ass if you mine on the same rock as me, leave partial rocks or whatever. I am a grown-up I can deal with it.

  • @Alana - it's actually not abhorrent - hence the debate :D
It does boil down to the way people feel about the mining mechanics (I think it takes ~8 real-world minutes for a rock to regenerate but I'm sure someone else has exact times). Some people really, really care about every rock being at 100% potential yield, and some don't... which fires up the whole debate. Your strategy of taking only what you need is no less valid than the strategy of someone who wants to mine only in batches of 50 (for whatever reason).

  • I'm not entirely sure why there's a problem here--I've never seen a shortage of rocks to mine, so I've never seen a reason to mine the same rock someone else is mining. The load times between streets is super fast, so if there's little available in the street you're on, move on to the next one. No biggie. I felt the same way with the "pollution" issue in the other not-to-be-named game. It irritates me a bit in both games to see someone come along and start working on the same rock/pollution stack that I'm working on, but it's nothing to have a conniption fit over--just move on to another one if you don't want to share and get over it.

It also irritates me a little bit to see small amounts of rock left behind, but again it's not something I am going to spend alot of effort getting all up-in-arms about. I'll finish off the rock myself so the next person can have a fully-regenerated beauty, and feel good about myself for doing something positive for someone else. No need to be mad--you have no idea why the other person didn't finish that rock off. It might have been a good reason, and if not, oh well. There are plenty of other rocks out there, and the mines are growing.

  • @Travinara
I've only just started playing, so maybe my strategy will change as I learn more about the game... I mean, I was only mining things in the first place because a quest wanted me to :P  It said to get seventeen sparkly rock (and ten-fifteen of two others) or what have you, and it took me the better part of an hour just to get all of the sparkly. I couldn't figure out where it was going to regenerate because I didn't know the map well enough, and there weren't any partial rocks to be found :(

Eventually I found a complete rock and mined what I needed.
... and then I toppled over in relief IRL. Onto my cat.
The point being I don't think my cat likes Glitch?

I will share, no problem with me. I only ask that you don't stand on the same side of the rock as me. I want to look at my mining buddy :)

  • my own achievements
    are the most important thing
    so step off my rock

    this is mine to mine
no time to talk about it
fuck, the sparkly is now gone, and this is too many syllables

    does the hamster know
    she's in the same location
    after all that work?

  • I'm sorry for not reading all of this, but.. ..I don't understand why mining the same rock as someone else is a problem. As I understand, you get more of the rock by helping or being helped by someone else. Isn't that an advantage?

  • Coffee, this is a 5 month old thread (the last reply being from 4 months ago). The issue it once represented is no longer an issue because the mechanics have been changed to foster a more helpful, group oriented environment.

  • Hehe, it's fine. :)  I certainly understand reading up on things and getting lost in threads upon threads.

And I think eventually some of these older threads from alpha and beta will be moved into an archive or some such so that they're still accessible, but not as easily mistaken for current issues.

  • Wow I didn't know this was such an issue. I always mine other ppls rocks and I like when ppl come and mine on my rocks. I feel like I make the same amount of ore if not more than if I spent the entire time at one rock just chipping away. I move along faster and I seem to get a lot more gems from it. I guess I have just been oblivious to it and didnt realize it was a bad thing mining and sharing rocks. Guess I need to change up how I do things...
