Community gardens for a new player

This is probably a stupid noob question but...how are the community gardens meant to be used? I wasted my seeds and guano planting veg that I need, but if I log out while it's growing and come back when it's done the plants are gone! Are the community gardens first come, first served or are you supposed to be able to collect the veg that you planted? I would feel badly about taking others veg but I can't seem to get to my own fast enough before it's gone.

  • The community garden plots work just as the garden plots work in the garden of a home. But because they're public - anyone can take the fully grown crops (but they can also water, nourish and fertilise them!).

  • Not a noob question at all! The community gardens are based on trust, but I'd still watch over vegetables if I grew there. Anyone can pick anything that's grown all the way. You did it right with the seeds and guano. Next time, put two pieces of guano on each square, and the vegetables will grow in a 90% of the time listed on the seed packets' info. Just watch over them so 1. You can pick them and 2. Passerbys will be less tempted to take them.

Hopefully the person who took it didn't have bad intentions. When I was a newb, I walked past one and thought, "Wow, free stuff grows here!" Sorry to whoever's head of cabbage I stole in the beginning of October. I still feel bad.

  • There is no way for anyone to know who planted something in a community garden.  Many of us plant things there at random for others to harvest.  So, don't count on harvesting what you plant unless you are willing to stand there waiting for it to mature, and harvest it right away.

My suggestion to you is to harvest what you need and replant with that kind of seed, using guano.

  • What I do:*

    - If there's guano on something nearly grown, leave it alone.
    - If someone's standing there, keep clear.
    - If you have seeds to replace the crop, do it chop chop!

*which may not be your right way to play, because everyone has their own right way.

  • The difficulty with community gardens is that they are mostly used by new players as even the smallest apartment has at least a few plots. New players don't know how anything works yet so they might think the crops spawn there or that you can harvest and re-plant. Also, there are always those who will take whatever they can get...

You could try the gardens in the Alakol model homes - perhaps more chance of the veg being there when you come back?

If you let me know what veg you were growing I'd be happy to send you some.

  • Thanks for all the replies everyone! I'll be sure to watch my crops more carefully.
That's ok geekybird, I've bought more seeds but thanks for the kind offer :)

  • When I was using the community herb gardens for the first time, I asked and I was told that the system was "Pick one, plant one" preferably of the same kind that you picked.  At the moment I find an unfertilized plot that has just sprouted (at 50%) and fertilize that, while planting another plot with the same kind of seed.  Or I set up camp and plant a whole bunch and fertilize twice and then do some cooking, grinding, crafting, etc while I wait.  Sometime I strike up conversations with passersby.

It seems to me that visibly fertilized plants are treated differently than non-fertilized plants, particularly if someone is camping near them; but there is no way to tell the difference once something has grown fully so you do have to be there when that happens.

PS if you need produce, IM me and I probably have some stockpiled you can have for a song*.
