A player owned game?

I gotta admit, I love glitch. I've only been playing a short time, and I'm hooked! I find myself thinking about it at random times of the day, and I've been dreaming about it every night for at least a week now. Obviously you've got something special here.

So I thought, hey, I want in on this awesomeness! What if Tiny Speck offered players the opportunity to buy non voting shares in the company? I have no idea how any of the legal stuff would work, but I'd be in for a chunk.

Anyway, just throwing it out there. Thanks!

  • I have also dreamt about the game on several occasions, and once I was so excited about new unexpected things that I discovered about the game that I woke up in the middle of the night thinking about it and couldn't get back to sleep for 3 hours! I'd love to contribute to Tiny Speck as well--I am excited about the company and I know it will do very well!

  • Oh my, I sense a theme. I've dreamt in Glitch, too. This would be pretty cool if it was possible.

  • tiny speck has something under a few million dollars of venture capital invested in it already, so unless you think the player base gather a few million dollars in an *attempt* to buy the company, which i'm not sure tiny speck would even like to have happen, this idea is a non-starter.

  • I don't think splotch is trying to buy out the company, striatic. I think he just wanted to contribute a little, like any other small-time stock holder.

  • yeah, sorry, striatic. apparently i titled this wrong. definitely not trying to buy them out. was just ruminating about the possibility of investing in the company. you'll see i even floated the idea of non voting shares. figured it was a long shot due to the sums of money involved, but a guy can dream. (and dream i shall. ;-)

  • Is the concept of Credits and Subscriptions not your way to invest into the company?

  • that's a way to support the company, not to invest in it.

  • Splotch, it is a nice idea indeed and we wouldn't be opposed to it in principle. However, it's impossible on a practical level: since the Securities Act of 1933, the U.S. Federal government regulates the sale of shares in both public and private companies.

The regulations exist to protect investors from unscrupulous hucksters who lie about what they are selling and are generally a good thing (IMO). In order to sell shares to the general public (as opposed to sales to accredited investors, company insiders, family, etc.) Tiny Speck would have to go through a very expensive and lengthy process of disclosure, making up documents, filing forms, getting approvals and then forever comply with a bunch of reporting rules and generally do things which would cost much more than we could raise from the general public.

It's too bad, because it would be nice. But, I understand why things work like this and think it is good that there are laws that exist to protect less sophisticated investors from getting swindled (which still happens, obviously, but much less so than it used to and the bad people are much more likely to get seriously punished if caught).

So, no selling of shares. But, we will at least offer some special things to early testers to reward their support :)
