The Great Wood Tree Dilemma

When talking about Wood Trees, there are two camps, as far as I can tell.  One camp finds them so hideous looking that they make it a point to clear every one of them that they see.  And the other camp finds their rarity so frustrating they make it a point to plant one at every open patch they come across.  It seems both camps operate at opposite extremes.  Let's try to find a common ground.  Let's come up with a way that planks are still readily available while maintaining the beauty of the environment.

What I propose is to remove wood trees from the game entirely.  Increase the chance for planks to randomly drop from harvests of other trees.  And give trees a pre-determined life span.  Petting and watering will have a small rejuvenating effect, and the lack thereof will quicken the time to decay.  Once a tree decays, it can be cleared, just as one poisoned to death, to yield even more planks.  This resolves the issue of planks being scarce, gives seasoned beans more use, and keeps the environment pretty.
