I was planting purple in the herb gardens... left to look for other things... came back... AND EVERYTHING WAS HARVESTED!!!!! >:( If you take stuff there, you damn thieves, at least re-plant. :(
*bitch whine bitch whine bitch*
When your standing right there watching your crops and someone takes them yeah that's kinda a jackass move but if you leave and let them grow welllllll finders keepers I guess
There are a few users that tend to take advantage of situations like yours and from what I've heard there isn't much that can be done about it other than to just keep an eye out and be cautious. I'm sorry this happened to you. :(
It could be some new Glitches who don't know any better. The first time I came upon a community garden I thought it was just free food (like the trees) and I didn't even know how to plant crops or even find seeds.
Sucks all around. The best suggestion to be made at this time is to purchase one of the houses that have herb patches. They've been a wonderful addition to the game but leave you to consider what kind of crops you prefer to grow.
The houses with herb patches don't seem to me to be as productive as the tree house I had before reset. First, it was hard to get seeds, and I've seen purple flower seeds going for 200 currents on auction! scandal! you can get up to two from each flower. s Secondly, there are not as many tree patches as the treehouses and other houses have. Only one dark patch.
What I do is when I'm giving stuff away to people to earn the philanthropist badges, I check to see their level. If they are over level 10 I'll give them ai purple flower. If they are under level 10 I'll give them something like a sammich.
And could people STOP selling purple flower seeds for bizarre prizes? http://www.glitch.com/auctions/item-purple-flower-seed/
maybe some folks are just storing the seeds in auction but the others seem to be taking the lead from whatever the "going rate" is. 200 currents for a purple flower seed? o rily? you can get up to 2 seeds from a flower and the flowers are going for 14 currents each.
Eeek. It's not a newbie because they generally have the decency to take only a few plots instead of wiping out the whole community garden. It's too bad the notes got wiped off. It should be like the notes at the start areas- stuck to the ground.
biohazard: well, on the one hand we have threads here saying "welcome new players" and on the other hand we have auctions for purple flower seeds going for 100 -200c. Who is going to buy those but people who don't know any better?
The names in the auction list for Purple Flower Seed are (almost) all names I do not recognize from before this test. Maybe it's people who don't know any better who are selling them.
There are no actual quests to do with herb gardens yet, right? "New" players shouldn't even really know the herb gardens exist, since very little in their early stages will lead them towards the firebogs. They most likely found or were given these items and one person, seeing no listings, chose their own price.
Best solution is notes around the community gardens - reminding people to replant whatever they find (perhaps even explaining how to obtain seeds). I'd do it but I still haven't learned penmanship. - Then it'll be time to start leaving poems around the world again.
It could have been 20 different glitches who took a few each. And who might not had enough seeds to plant. (as shaking at low levels usually gave me 1 seed only) Replanting is nice but no requirement, if someone chooses not to do so then he/she has every right to.
And the question is how long were the plants ready ofcourse.
I remember there being a thread about this a while back concerning NOT replanting, specifically because it keeps the gardens filled up and leaves no open plots. I can see both sides. There were also several threads about rules. Those went nowhere. The best way to safeguard your stuff is to buy a house with the features you want. Some have herb gardens. But if you plant in a public place, set a timer and come back before harvest time.
Also, keep in mind that the game doesn't have an explicit purpose. So while you may think that building community and keeping manners in place is valuable, another might see this place as winner-take-all. And really, there's no one who can say which is right.
The other night, I looked over The Boyfriend's shoulder and saw him in a community herb garden, harvesting away. "Are those yours to harvest?" I asked.
He said no, because honestly, they weren't. But if he dropped them on the ground, some random person would've scooped them up. So, I taught him how to shuck herbs. Then it turned out he didn't know how to plant yet, so there was another lesson right there. Then, hey! Why don't you eat that one yellowcrumb herb you picked up and see what it does? You earned it. All in all, he learned his lesson -- a few of them, actually.
He was only level four or five at the time, and it seems that the newbs don't always understand the concept of the community gardens. Maybe we should just start a note campaign?
I think part of community gardens is more experienced players doing something nice for others. Let's be fair - there are low level players who have low energy and might die. There's a nice plant they can harvest and get a (comparatively) high amount of energy back from eating it.
There's a greed element here, but it goes both ways. A community garden isn't just a place for gardeners to share plots, it's also a place where people who are just getting into the game can go. No, it's not always fair, and some people ARE jerks. But ultimately, if your crops mean that much to you, buy a house and control exactly what happens to them and who harvests them.
I didnt play a lot in beta, so still learning. Trying to do butterfly quest, and I use my ubtterfly lotion, or try, and when I do, people there just come along and jump and take before I have a chance. Not very nice.
Yesterday, same thing happened with fruit.
I thought this was such a friendly game, people have been so helpful, but there are so many greedy, selfish peeps here too :(
Maclin: what do you mean with fruit? You should be able to harvest the tree still, if others harvest it it has no effect on you (unless the tree is very unhealthy). With the butterfly thing: I have a skill that allows me to massage without lotion and then milk. I am also faster. Yesterday I did see someone massage a butterfly, so I massaged it too and then milked it. This should not affect the ability to milk for the other.Same as that you can nibble from a pig with more than 1 person at a time.
This same thing just happened to me. I planted a few herbs, but they ended up taking longer than I expected to grow, and I had to go to class. I came back right after class, and all my herbs had been taken not not replanted. Seriously? I wouldn't mind someone taking them if they need them, but at least have the decency to replant. Jerks.
@Maclin, what are you talking about with Butterflies? The previous person does not affect their behavior for you. Trees, yes, but animals, no. Animals are player instanced.
And the community gardens will have that problem. You have to get your own place and plant stuff there if you want to guarantee you get what you plant. Even guests in your home can't touch your crops. They can interact with your trees and animals but not so you lose any.
@Laika - Dropped items are not permanently locked. 30 seconds after the the person walks away the lock goes. And it does not prevent exchanges. Every item has a "give" option. And you can give things to people by dragging from the ground or your inventory to the person, vendor, or shrine you want to give it to. The only reason anyone would advocate taking things people have dropped on the ground is to facilitate theft. We had serious problems with VERY expensive blockmakers being stolen a while back and they only work if placed on the ground. People have watched helplessly while their equipment they watched some bystander take them apart and run off with the parts. The staff wants to prevent griefing and they WILL take the steps to do so over time.
