Kodamas - spirits to lead you

Can we have some of these: (from Hayao Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke - first 30sec or so of clip)
www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoZ...

And if you can get your mood really high then a few ambling kodamas will wander past you and guide you to places where you'll find a new task (in their happy drifting way).

Could be a great way of keeping people occupied while they're waiting for skills to load - other than just wandering about raising their xp and harvesting berries. So maybe you can only see them when you reach a really really good mood.

So if you've finished a quest and your pet rock is waiting on a new skill to load to give you something else to do, you just have to get your mood up high enough and these guys will guide you to somewhere where there's something to do that you haven't experienced yet e.g. hidden levels.

If not can we have a few wandering through a level anyway? I just love the way their heads rotate and make that gorgeous noise!

Thoughts?

  • Wonderful idea!
If we're suggesting Miyazaki spirits, I'd like a no-face to lead me somewhere.

  • I agree with ER.
This has got me thinking though. A street or area similar to the Castle in the Sky from Laputa would be so cool! Using Studio Ghibli as inspiration is definitely a good thing!

  • i think that particular interpretation of the kodama spirit might be under copyright protection.

  • @striatic As is any artwork, but for the right project the copyright owner might give permission or, if it's the artist, contribute something along the same lines :)

  • "As is any artwork"

well, not artworks created in the early 20th century or earlier.

"for the right project the copyright owner might give permission or, if it's the artist, contribute something along the same lines"

Miyazaki is not going to contribute art for this game.

as for securing the rights? Studio Ghibli, distributed internationally by Disney? good luck! : ]

there's also a problem with evoking "Princess Mononoke: The Game!" when glitch should really have something of its own identity. for me, it would be a bit like Donald Duck appearing in the middle of the game as an NPC.

  • (Seems to me your comments above are sort of in opposition to the thread you started called, "any artists or animators you'd like to see design levels/items for glitch?" in which you said, "any artists. living or dead!"...)

I'd love to have a Miyazaki-ish character, the likes of no-face, wandering through a level as a guiding spirit... but any sort of guiding spirit would be nifty. The *idea* of such a helpful spirit is what Schmoo was suggesting here, of course none of us would recommend copyright infringement nor assume Studio Ghibli would provide images. TGDT replied, "Using Studio Ghibli as inspiration is definitely a good thing!" Inspiration is the key word here, and I provide 2 thumbs up to Schmoo's idea, however it might be implemented.

  • I know what you're saying striatic but I'm a hopeless optimist. If you don't ask you don't get. How do you know that the artists Miyazaki used wouldn't be willing to contribute art to something they're passionate about? How do you know they wouldn't get passionate about an online game?
In Japan some online gamers hold the same celebrity (and pay) as footballers (soccer players) in the UK.

There's no harm in asking permission and the idea of the querky kodames can always be portrayed in another way. :)

getting a gauge on what styles people are interested in based on the artists they like is different from requesting a particular character for a particular fictional universe be adopted into glitch wholesale, complete with signature sound effect.

"How do you know they wouldn't get passionate about an online game?"

why would a multi-million dollar business provide artwork to glitch for free? maybe to promote a movie release, but Princess Mononoke came out in 1997.

    (a) Nope, only different if you didn't notice the part above about rambling guiding spirits being the creative idea in this thread. I like Miyazaki's style, and would love to see some elements of glitch INSPIRED BY those characters mentioned, and I understand that to be similar to some suggestions made in that other thread. (Would I *like to see* Studio Ghibli "design levels/items" for glitch? Sure. Do I think it would happen? Nah.)

    (b) Did someone other than you mention sound effects somewhere? Not that I noticed.

  • Before we get moody, I agree that the idea in and of itself is a good one, but we need to be mindful that this is Glitch. Why? It's uniqueness is what makes it so attractive. Before we seek out artists to recreate something they've produced for someone ELSE, let's focus on adopting a similar idea and crafting it into a form more suited for THIS game. Personally, I'd be a tad disappointed to see something appear in Glitch that I had seen elsewhere. Uniqueness is key here! :)

  • I'm getting a little tired of saying the same thing repeatedly. This thread suggests having spirit guides which might lead glitch players to new areas or on quests or into mischief or on adventures or... you name it! The visual and audible substance of said spirit guides is up for grabs, but the original idea is what's important, not the image employed. Some of us have suggested possible spirits that we like, as inspiration: I'm sure the devs would come up with their own unique take on this idea, if they someday decide to implement it.
Posted 2 years ago by Eleanor Rigby Subscriber! | Permalink
  • you suggested a "no-face" which is a similarly copyrighted, non-generic 'spirit'.

i pointed out that glitch cannot add characters under copyright to their game and only then did -you- suggest something more generic, as well as implying I was somehow being hypocritical in pointing out that glitch can't reuse specific characters from specific motion pictures.

meanwhile other people continued suggesting the use of specific motion picture characters, acquiring rights from Studio Ghibli despite your belated suggestion of a generic spirit. in addressing them somehow you imagined i was addressing or somehow ignoring you.

by the way, the "thread" never suggested a generic guide spirit. "you" suggested a generic guide spirit. i can't find anyone else who suggested anything other than directly lifting a miyazaki character and dropping it into glitch. i don't think there is anything wrong with pointing out the extreme improbability of their being allowed to do that.

That was the real point of the thread. It wasn't stated outright at the top, but as Confucius said, duh.

  • ANYWAYS, your familiar (magic rock for now; upgradable later) is one such spirit guide. And soon, I bet, each location will have its own spirit as well.

  • I definitely see where striatic is coming from so I don't bear them any grudges for their comments.

I also think that at this early(ish) stage in the creative process i.e. when TinySpeck are just asking for any ideas that we'd like to throw into the mix, it's the ideas that are important and not the actual logistics. I should therefore not have gone on about copyrights (sorry!)- it's just technical stuff which will hamper creativity.

Think BIG and then refine ideas/processes to make a product...or in our case just think BIG and let TinySpeck do the rest :D

  • "That was the real point of the thread. It wasn't stated outright at the top, but as Confucius said, duh."

you didn't start the thread either, so how do you know what shmoo was trying to imply initially or not? thanks for the "confucious said" parting shot, Tingly. nice. are you trying to say that at no point in the discussion that no one brought up using the specific Kodamas from the movie, or that shmoo didn't continue to talk about it throughout the thread, but that despite this I'm an idiot coz confucious says, duh?

  • "I definitely see where striatic is coming from so I don't bear them any grudges for their comments."

thank you for seeing where I'm coming from, shmoo. I understand what you're coming from too and it is good to think BIG. thanks for the respectful discussion and understanding that bringing up copyright here was a salient point.

  • Sometimes it is very difficult to resist that impulse to fold under the end corners of one's conversational toilet paper, as it were, to make a perfect but temporary point. These difficulties aside, what is essential and what must be honored is this: Point or no point, flap goes OVER.
