Item / Gameplay Idea - Shanking with a Shiv

I think it would be a good idea if there was a way to let another player know that you are really upset with them. There are a lot of options to interact with fellow players, (i.e. Kiss Hug Moon Splank) but I think Glitch could go one step further and add a Shank option.

In terms of etiquette, it would be a much more extreme version of splanking, when someone has truly crossed the line. Perhaps you could perform this action when you want to block a player, and let the good for nothing know you did it, and you are quite serious, and not to be messed with. This way, once the player has been shanked, they will disappear.

I think you could make a pretty good Shiv by combining the head of a broken pickaxe, and the handle of a broken scraper. Perhaps you could craft this new item by combining these two existing broken items. I'm not sure from a gameplay sense if you should create the shiv and keep it as a tool, or equip it to your bear, much like lips or the moon.

Personally I think you should be able to equip it to your bear, because it will take some of the sting away from the act, from the shankee's perspective. If you've been shanked by someone and your screen is filled with a shiv stabbing you, you might be really upset, maybe even slightly terrified. But if that shiv was in the hands of an adorable little bear, you might be really upset, maybe even slightly terrified, but then laugh just a little bit because you just got shanked by an adorable bear. Maybe he can wink at you, right at the end, as if to tell the player, "Hey buddy, I think you need a bit of an attitude adjustment, but I'm only shanking you all in good fun."

In conclusion, in order to let us, as players, express our emotions across a wider spectrum than that currently available, Tiny Speck should let us craft shivs in order to shank other players, possibly at the hands of adorable little bears.

  • Edit 2: HE SAID IT ALL AS A JOKE

I doubt this will ever be implemented. For a number of reasons that I am sure others will most assuredly be happy to explain to you. But, the short of it is this: Glitch does not seem to be a competitive game. There is competition, friendly 'tag' games, races, etc. But you can not harm another person. The griefing that happened in the herb gardens was an issue of supply and demand and trying some trying to dominate an new supply.

With the exception of very few items in the game, namely the Yeti that was only given to Alpha testers, and the Beta Senor Funpickle, are a finite resource. The only other hard to acquire but not impossible to collect dolls, and cubimals and they go for quite a bit - but not difficult to collect amounts. Everything, including potions, herbs, and other resources can be gathered again. And when you mine, for instance, you are rewarded for having someone else do the activity with you.

And if you can not simply ignore a person, travel to a different street, and fail to report a person - why should you be allowed to violently act out your frustrations when there are other means to settle the dispute? That not only seems childish, but very worrying as a person and as a human being.

Edit: on the off chance this was meant entirely as a joke - given the whole using the bear to do the deed, then it can be seen as sort of funny. But again, its only funny if it was really meant as a joke. Some gamers may not see it as such (too many fps, mmorpgs with fighting, etc) and agree with you for the wrong reasons. Aside from fearing ewoks I mean.

  • Shanking? No thanks. I can only imagine the potential for griefing with this. Who's to judge whether or not a shanking was righteously dispensed? People get bent out of shape over perceived slights and overreact as it is. Do we compound that with an aggressive, violent action that could lead to shanking wars? Would we set up a shanking tribunal? And to where would the shankee disappear? This smacks of vigilante justice, to me. People are already perfectly capable of "shanking" others and expressing their displeasure with words. That can get ugly enough without an associated ugly action.

  • Maybe someday they'll be a Glitch police force, a courtroom, and a jail. In which case, shivs would be handed out to criminal glitches after they are 'sentenced'.

BTW, I'm joking too. Sort of.

  • Dont think thats going to happen.
If you dont want someone to do something like that to you, just tell them, "shut up or i'll report you."

  • all i can say is that i'm in awe you actually posted this (and thought an awful lot on the subject lmao)

and yes it was a joke, seeing as the idea originally came from me splanking him (playfully).  so if anyone is getting shanked it's haze lol (i think he likes the idea actually o.O)

but for anyone who hasn't experienced a conversation with haze... i totally see how this could/would most likely be read as a real idea :/

haze - you may have to put cautionary signs up when you post.  don't make me HK you!

  • We could just leave flaming bags of bat guano on the annoying persons door with the verb "stomp", it would take energy and lose mood, but give them xp.

  • I'm not sure why everyone thinks this is such a bad idea. Glitch is a game about personal expression in a creative world, and this would just be one more way for people to express themselves. And I've seen plenty of threads asking for more elaborate items to craft, and this item would be a perfect example.

While there might be a possibility of griefing from some players, I think it would be easy to implement a system to prevent it. Perhaps every bear would be required to obtain a permit to carry the shiv. The player would be required to click that he or she will not arbitrarily use his or her shiv, unless he or she is provoked and only acting in self-defense. There could also be a mandatory shiv safety course (much like the Firefly Whistle tutorial) and three game day waiting period. In the end, we might even have less griefing because most players will be armed to take action against those that wrong them.

I know not everyone will agree with this tactic, but by giving players a tool to keep other players in line, we ultimately have a better, safer Ur. I believe that as players, we should have the fundamental right for our bears to bear arms.

In conclusion, in order to have a safer world in Glitch, Tiny Speck should let us craft shivs that we can use to shank other players, at the hands of our responsibly trained bears.

  • Glitch is blissfully free of almost all violence metaphors. Personally, I think this is a really, really good thing.
