How long do dropped items last?

I was under the impression that an item dropped would last until it was picked up, but it occurs to me that there would be a lot more clutter if that was the case.

So how long will a dropped item remain on a street, if undisturbed by players?  Let's say, if someone were writing haiku notes and leaving them in various hidden spots around the world...

  • There's a lot of glitches playing now. I think stuff just gets picked up, moved, ect.

  • Well, that's what I'm *hoping* -- I'm just curious if anyone knows the rare of legitimate decay, if there is one.

  • I don't think there is one, except for some special items that can't be picked up, like littered paper cups.

  • Someone told me that it won't despawn.. So I've been storing my music blocks on the floor of my room.. Will hopefully stay there forever.

On a slightly different note: I wanna keep my street clean, why can't I pick up those water cups?

  • Things don't disappear or rot or go away without being picked up and used.

  • Some things, namely food items, can be gobbled up by the piggies, though.

  • if you drop anything, the odds are that no matter what it is, someone will pick it up, everything has some kind of use/benefit, no matter how small

  • Things don't decay, but people can pick things like notes up and toss them in a shrine to get rid of them. I imagine there is at least one person doing this which is why the world isn't littered with notes everywhere.

  • I have hidden object before had had them stay for weeks at least.

But right now people just pick stuff up... they'll donate ANYTHING.

  • This reminds me: wish we could have made time-lapse videos of people picking up all the "junk piles" on the eve of reset. Or who knows....we might have trash pick-up shifts at the dead of night manned by wayward devs and bureaucrocs. It's a mystery.

  • Those sneaky devs and bureaucrocs! *shakes fist*

  • Just to be clear: I'm okay with someone walking off with them.  They're notes, after all.

I just wanted to know that they won't just decay without anyone seeing them, which I think has been confirmed.

  • Maybe a community service project? Sentenced to pick up a bag of litter. The cups of water seem to be at bubble trees alot. Trying to make carbonated drinks?

  • Hey! Slightly unrelated, but am I totally late in realizing that now people can't pick up items touching another person's feet?

  • It's not that they're touching another person's feet, it's that the person dropped them and hasn't moved away from them.  (Things that landed on the floor because inventory was full when you harvested them don't count as dropped.)

  • Yeah, that's what I meant - sorry, wasn't clear :)

But how long has that been going on?

  • Couple weeks.
