homeless

Since Glitch went live, I've been homeless. I'm level 27 and have more than enough currants to buy any house I want, but I've grown to appreciate it as an enjoyable play constraint.

During Beta I bought a cute little Pac Man cottage in Groddle Meadow that I filled to the gills with animals, items that I might happen to need for street projects (in most cases, ones that I was never able to get to a project in time), many stacks of basic resources, and a collection of all kinds of random interesting things.  My hoarding prevented me from upgrading to a bigger house when they appeared on the market because my brain hurt when I tried to think about packing everything up to move it.

This time around I shied away from buying a house until I could afford "exactly the house I wanted" so that I didn't have to worry about moving. I put all my money into bags, then started grinding for currants. By the time I hit 50k I had gathered a few herb seeds and was dismayed to discover that I couldn't grow herbs in a big house. It also sounded like the most expensive properties were also hazy, which was unappealing. So I decided to wait until a better option emerged.

I've been plodding along for a while longer, broke 100k currants a few days ago, and have gotten to like the idea that I've never owned a house in game. There's something appealingly monk-like about renouncing one's possessions (or at least one's home) and being a permanent wanderer. There's a feeling of freedom - I don't have overwhelming piles of stuff, I don't ever feel like I need to go "home"  because my home goes with me, and I don't have to dedicate a teleport slot to my house. I'm able to do almost everything other players can; I'm even working on an icon collection even though I don't have anyplace to set them up.

I have been wishing there was a badge for going homeless for an extended period. (Badges for intentionally constrained play is another interesting topic entirely - consider "teetoller", "vegetarian" or "fruitarian" badges as other examples.)

There's only a few cons to being homeless in Glitch at this point:
- I can't do the "Got Milk?" quest and I can't get the "Homesteader" or "Lanternerer" achievements.
- Gardening achievements are trickier because I have to use public gardens, and earning animal husbandry achievements is a bigger resource expense since I have to release in public.
- High inventory overhead for some activities means I generally won't do them (especially collecting cubimals, musicblocks, emblems, etc).

Are there any other mid-high level homeless players out there?

  • I don't know how high level he is, but Randyll Tarly is Eastern Approach's resident homeless Glitchen.

  • Odd...I'm a Level 22 and I just last night made the decision to sell my 30K house in Alakol in an effort to try and stay nomadic until the "right" house comes on the market. Some of the advantages of being "sans maison" so far...all my stuff is always with me...I don't have to teleport home every time I need to make something with my gassifier or alchemy kit (I always kept them in my storage cabinet).
Honestly, at first the logistics of leaving hurt my brain a little, had to go upgrade my bags, but then once it was done, I experienced a feeling of, I can only call it "relief". I never really liked the space as a "home"...too sterile and big for one person...though the ACU (Animal Containment Unit) in the backyard was nice.
Still trying to get all my Completist badges, so it should be easier now...just work my way around Ur, street by street, without feeling the "pull of home"....
Perhaps we'll cross paths at some point...maybe a meet-up of Nomadic Glitchen is in order?

  • I'm looking for a home in Alakol, so if someone else is selling, message me!

  • Dahlia, its possible that when the house customization comes around, people will be more reluctant in selling their houses.
What we should keep in mind is that, while new house blocks can be added anytime, there are only so many appealing streets to choose from (considering tube stations and vendors).
So keeping a house in a good location, even if the house isnt to our liking just yet, can be a good move for the future.

  • @Woochi: Oo, I like "hobo" and "vagabond" way more than homeless! I'll start using one of those. :)

@Lorelei: Nice! I will have to wander over thataway and bump into him. That's a nice area to hang out in because of all the Ilmenskie traffic.

@gamecharacter: Great, maybe we'll run into each other. :)

    @arizoo: Thanks!

  • @Dahlia DreadNaught:

"Relief" is a great word for what I feel sometimes. Going back to my house in beta always seemed like a chore and an energy sink. I have enough house stuff to deal with RL that not having any to deal with in Glitch is great.

I totally hear what you are saying about the sterile Alakol homes. That was one thing keeping me from getting one. I love modern architecture, but that's usually only when it's decorated a little. The ACU in those places is nice. The model home's ACU is actually filled with pigs, and I've been pondering squatting out there if I want to work on animal badges. I've also been working on the Completist badges. They're quite easy to do since there's nothing pulling me to any other location.

I would totally be down with a Nomadic/Vagabond Glitchien meet-up!

  • @Meliblue: That's a really good point. I have been wondering if that might become an issue for me as well. That said, I'm curious how much customization will be allowed. If I can put any kind of house anywhere, then location will be the most important thing. If the customizations are all modifications to existing houses and no new constructions, then my level of interest in some areas will be pretty limited.

At one point I was considering the appeal of living "out in the boonies", but I've gotta say, I am pretty unimpressed with the houses in Aranna, Besara, and Tamila. Bortola has a few interesting cottages (only one of which is currently available), but everything north of there is pretty meh.

Also, I have always wished there was housing in Ix or Uralia. Those areas are my favorite in terms of look and feel.  I bet I would love whatever they did with housing there.

  • At first I was a little put off by Randyll, to be frank. How could it be fun for someone to stand in the same subway day in and day out, asking for handouts? He was there every single time I was, for at least six days straight, and I had been ill and without much else to do besides play online, so I was on A LOT at all times of the day and night, and EVERY SINGLE TIME I got off the subway there, he was just lurking, with a note at his feet. "Why not go harvest a tree?" I thought. Then I got into the spirit of his performance art schtick (the George R. R. Martin references are a bonus) and the playfulness of it, and I am sad when Randy is not there. (Also, there are not many trees to harvest in that part of Ur.) As it is, I "reverse pickpocket" a little goodie into his inventory on my way home from a long shift toiling in the mines for my currants. :) Nothing extravagant, as I am not sure what he can and cannot use at his level, just a little present as a thanks for adding a little color and fun to the game.

If I am very fortunate, not only will Randy be there, but he will have his Princess with him, and one or both will not be AFK. He doesn't say much ("HODOR HODOR!") but he makes with the hugs like no one's business. And that's charming.

  • @mirth...I'm totally with you on the Ix/Uralia housing wishes...why is it that the best styling/graphics for the game has no housing? I'm sure whatever it would be, it would be snatched up in mere heartbeats!

  • I like your style. Although I kinda like the idea of having a home, your style of living is kinda tempting. I shall think about it some more.
But I got another idea for a badge. Reaching certain levels and not have died once. :-D
I am lvl 38 now, and never died yet... that should be worth a badge too... :-P

  • I'm not too high level, but back in beta I did own an Iljoki Ease manor. Till this day I hope for the owner to move out so that I can move back in...Not the best idea, but my heart is in the firebogs, so It's okay for me :)
