Is it normal and expected or considered rude to use the icons of others?

I've just started visiting glitches' home streets for more than delivering a gift or just being curious to peek inside a tower.  Finally, I'm using the home resource routes, yay!  Yes, I got lost and wound up following three different routes.  But, it was fun!

And, I've come across a few streets lined with icons and machines.

I re-fueled someone's wood machine, mainly because it squealed at me but also because I just want to enjoy participating.  Then, I reflected on someone else's icon!!  It was right there, next to the machine and some peat.  Naturally, I suddenly decided for no real reason that I had worn out my welcome.  No idea if I should have used their icon or not!!

Then, after finding myself entirely addicted to the route and having spent energy helping to restore and squeezing the chickens of others, I found myself very low on energy.  Uh, huh, I revered someone else's icon!!

And, once again, I felt as though I should not have done that.

Now, I know that if it is on a "home street", it is open to public use.  But, I also know and am sensitive to the desires of some to not have their home street items used by others.

Granted, I'm not going to shrink someone's piggies and take them with me but, does icon use hurt or is it expected?

And, if there is no note saying "please don't....", then I'm guessing I can...right?

Thanks in advance.

  •  i think rule of thumb is if its on the front street or at a place of public access , it is appropriate, and expected.  thats my take on it.:D

  • yeah if they dont want to anyone to use it they can put icons in their private backyard but its nice to tithe if you use it all up i would assume

  • Thank you two.  Yes, I tithed; that is what I assumed too.

Okay, just knowing that it is normal makes me feel better!

    thanks

  • I have icons in my yard and tower for people to use, totally.  Like the above posters are saying, if people want to not have them used by others they can always put them in their house.  But also! I originally put them out for others thinking I would not use them myself at all, but since they have changed to have more actions available per each tithe, I've found myself reflecting (? the img one) periodically. So having them out there and means they get used, get tithed, and then I can use them once in a while too - like a little bonus for me.

Icons do run out of actions after a certain number, so while I would by no means say you must tithe, or you should tithe for every time you use one, just keep in mind that tithing once in a while is a way you can help other Glitchen, just like you did with the refueling.

I think looking out for signs and such and trying to respect what you do see is really awesome. Signs I have encountered usually are of the nature "please fertilidust my wood trees if you can" or "try to plant such and such in this particular garden" and not so much of the "don't use these things" variety.  Although I'm sure someone has icons out they'd prefer to not be used, heh :) But yeah, your last bit - if there's not a note saying not to use the icons, go for it!! :D

edit: haha, I see you're good now, so just ignore my longwindedness :)

  • Ah, longwindedness, how lovely!  Thanks, Diaveborn!

I see what you mean about not having to tithe each time, in regards to helping to restore.  When I break it (use it's last use), I like to restore it fully.  But, being new to the routes, I wandered away from the peat trek (I'm a peat yard-iner), I quickly found that my bag named "peat restoration" doesn't contain items needed for restoring anything other than peat!!  Er, my bad!

So, I found myself, after completely using up a dullite, unable to restore even 1 part of the dullite.  Aww, sorry to whomever you are!!

I could just stick to the peat/dirt routes, since they are more likely to be restorable with my resources but, yeah, it is so much fun wandering around glitches yards!!

So, I'll just be sure to tithe and I think I'll start carrying more items that can go towards restoration of resources I don't normally use.

I, obviously, think notes and signs are one of the best features yet.  Go ahead and tell me what I can squeeze and what I can't squeeze, I'm game for it!

    Thanks!

  • If you end up with an item that needs restoration, and you don't have the resources, just say something on global (be specific--"A dullite rock on acronymph's street needs restored, but I don't have the ____, can anyone help?").  There's lots of us that love to do restoration projects (I carry a kit around to restore almost any resource), so don't feel bad at all.  I'd rather people use my resources up and not be able to restore them than not use them.  They're there to use.

  • I have icons in my house for private use. I also have a large amount in my tower for public use. My tower is the Temple of Imagination, a place dedicated to honoring the Giants. I expect people to use the icons and to reflect on the wonders of iMG.

  • I believe that there is a thread somewhere (sorry too tired to hunt it up now) where Stoot said that using Icons on someone else's street gives that person more iMG than any other action you can do on the street. So when you use an icon on another Glitch's street you're actually helping to increase their daily iMG reward from visitors. I think it's safe to assume that those of us who have them out want them to get used (unless a particular Glitch has a sign saying he/she doesn't).

  • We get more iMG when you do more things on people's streets.  I have a full set of icons for people to use for that reason. Same with all the dirt, trees, piggies, butterflies, and chickens.

The only thing I don't want people to do on my street is add more animals. It's a lovely gesture, but I've got the perfect balance and when someone adds more it makes the animals sad pandas.

  • The only reason I have my full set of icons outside is so that others may enjoy and use them. If I didn't want them used I'd put them inside!

Please! Reflect, Revere, and Ruminate away! Tithe if you wish but I expect I'll have to tithe some each time I do my morning Reflections. It's no big deal.

  • Like others have said, everything that's on my home street - animals, trees, crop and herb gardens, machines, and nearly full set of icons - are for everyone to use and enjoy.

Yes, we do get some img out of it, but it's insignificant in the daily balance. The reason they're there is to be used for free, to happily share what I could without expecting anything back other than the warm fuzzy feeling when checking with the butler that a lot of fellow glitches have enjoyed it. And with the influx of new glitchen, it's double fuzzy :)

  • Everything on my street is there for others to use.  I have a sign up to let people know that if something turns to a project, don't panic as I have plenty to fix it in the house. I also have a couple of icons out in the street.  I'm happy for people to use them and I tithe anytime I see the icons requesting it.

I like my visitors to not feel obliged to restore the goodies I put of for them.  Sure, it's lovely if they do, but I don't expect it.  It's impossible to carry everything you need while exploring.

  • What Heatseeker and xombiekitty said - I have a full set outside on my street to help the weary miners, and often I find them replenished by the visitors - maybe as a thank you for helping them with resources.

You could always leave  anote with a butler and ask if the person minds you using the icons.

IMO, if it is outside, it is public - and although there may be a few who abuse, there are many who use sensibly.

  • I have icons out on my street just for the purpose of others to use...with that being said, I never tithe to them, but I also don't interact with them either. If people want to use them, that's perfectly fine, but do not do so under the delusions that I will be there to tithe them too. I have a full set of icons inside my house that I only use for myself. Anything that is on my street, I keep out knowing that the public can use whatever is there in any way...and anything I want to keep for myself go inside my house. :)

  • Thank you all for the info and opinions!!  And, thank you, Botia, for the bit about extra animals.  I did actually add two piggies to a street yesterday.  I planned on adding four but stopped at two...just in case they didn't want them.  But, there was a piggie stick, feeders and collectors and no piggies!  So, I thought they might want piggies...hard to know for sure.

Great idea about leaving a note, too.  I remember seeing that (or did I say it???) when someone asked if it was best to restore or to leave a used up resource for the home-owner to fix or replace.  Ahh, so easy to forget sometimes.

Oh, I hadn't realized Global could be used that way!  I have had it open a few times but haven't chimed in yet--I'm a tad shy.  I'll bet that is also what the HRR group is for, too.  Can I just open that and leave a message there?  I haven't tried yet, I just am able to see it on my list of (I don't know what to call it)...the thing that shows me who is in Ur.

Now, I can continue my wandering without worrying about it.

    See you there!

  • I don't know about others, but my home street is built specifically for visitors. So everyone is welcome to use whatever they want, including my icons. I won't even get mad if they don't tithe ;)
    Everyone is welcome. Always.

  • @Legba and anyone, do you know if visitors' actions with icons INSIDE towers gives the street owner iMG?  Icons, if I understand correctly, are the only iMG-generating things that you can put in towers, since you can't raise animals or plant gardens in there.  I was wondering if they're treated as street things or house things in that respect.  Has anyone experimented?

  • Do you have a full set of Icons of your own Minkey?   A point that I haven't seen made so far, is that if you have your own set of icons, & you (for example) reflect on another Glitchens Icon of Pot, "Reflect" will then be faded out on your own Icon of Pot - so if you're a Glitch with all 11 Icons, you only get to do each action, on each of the 11 Giants Icons once (if they're tithed up & ready for full use of course!), using another Glitchens Icons as well as your own, won't allow you more uses (which totally makes sense!).

As far as I know, if you're a player who doesn't have the Icons, & use an Icon you don't have yourself, that will affect the Icon usage of the Glitchen whose Icon you've used, so it'd be nice if players tithed in that situation.

I recently put some spare Icons on my own street as I think it's nice if myself & other Glitchens visiting my street benefit from the random Giant Love, & for those using routes (I'm on the Spice Routes) who run out of energy & don't wish to lose their place on the route, the Icons are handy to have around for emergency energy I guess.

  • Just jumping on the bandwagon here... I have a whole duplicate set of icons in my front yard intended specifically for the convenience of visitors... Well, I also selfishly enjoy the extra Giant Love I get from walking past them :-)
Posted 4 months ago by Georgia Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Ahh, see, I only have one icon.  So, I did notice that the things I'd done at home could  not be re-done on the other glitchen's icon of Pot.  And, that is why I tithed, I was afraid that I'd use up the owner's chance of clicking on their icon.

Also, I had originally thought it possible that the reason icons were on home streets was so visitors could receive random Giant Love, which is why I wasn't sure of the protocol for reflecting etc.

And, thank you, Kittn!!  I'll try to visit your street, too.

My street is also available to all players, by the way.  I don't have icons on it but I do have peat...as far as the eye can see!  And, I check the peat-status then restore daily.  Plus, the regular visitors to my street tend to help with restoration quite frequently, so feel free to dig away.

Yes, Georgia, a lot have mentioned the duplicate icons.  What a great idea!  Seeing as how I've only got the one Pot icon, I should probably donate a ton more!!  I do have emblems, I just either keep them on shelves because I like the way they look or I send them away to beginner glitchens.  One day I'll remember to save the emblems of one giant so I can get a new icon.  Yes, it is a plan!

And, on that note, how exciting to have so many new/lower-level players!!!  I'm finding myself suddenly focusing on filling little bags rather than the routes I thought I was addicted to.  Sp cute you all are!

  • Since my front street and tower are specifically public places, I pick the resources I build there with that in mind.  Among other projects, I am slowly gathering icons and building a shrine in my tower, which is meant for others to visit, enjoy and use.  I have been using icons on other people's streets, since I don't have all of them myself, and I occasionally need the mood or energy boost as I travel.  With all of the home streets I visit, I try to find a good balance between making use of them, and being a good neighbor.  I use the icons and harvest the resources and take items from the gift piles.  I also leave gifts with butlers, feed animals, restore projects, add to gift piles, and tithe to icons.

  • I wish I had read this thread sooner rather than later..I run around like a headless chook collecting items to restore projects as I affectionately refer to as "I've exploded"..I am the depletion queen..I'm sure all these items sit on their last legs waiting for me as I visit home street lol
But I always fully restore..I go out of their home street I run around collecting all the items then I click on their name in my activity chat and go back..even if I didn't explode it I go back and fix it if I don't have the items on me :-/..lol
If there was a badge for how many things one can explode ..It's Mine!!  .. :D

I should add I love visitors and I don't care if I come home to an exploded item..its ok I'll fix it...Unless you want to fix  it of course..that's ok too...I thought using icons was personal..like if I used one up on your street and didn't tithe.it would be mine left short and not yours??..Anyway I prefer the random bestowing other than the me pressing and selecting that's why I don't use them .. :)

  • My street icons are there for others to use. While it's always nice if glitchen choose to tithe, I have no particular expectation that they will.

FWIW: If you are a relatively new glitch, your cost to tithe is MUCH lower than that of a higher level glitch, so you do your host a great kindness by tithing.
