Real-life Glitchy urges (the 'Tetris effect' and Glitch!)

Some of you may be familiar with a phenomenon known as the 'Tetris effect' (see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetri... ) in which you play a game enough that it starts to affect your thoughts. You close your eyes and your brain generates a game of Tetris, or you find yourself riding a train and visualizing your Katamari rolling up the the scenery as you pass. Not too surprisingly, I am starting to see the signs of glitchified mind control. ;)

A few months ago, I saw a girl wearing a panda hat, and I had this almost wordless urge to *friend* the person before I even understood why. And this morning, I was walking to work, and I spotted a fist-sized clump of topsoil in the gutter, complete with grass on top, and again, I found myself with a fleeting but almost disturbingly strong urge to collect it and throw it in my bag.

Has glitch invaded your consciousness yet? Do tell!

  • I present to you Exhibits A and B from my walk to take my kid to the bus stop this morning:

A: "OMG a lump of earth! I must grab this for a project!!!"

    B: "OH NOES who died????"

I've used the flickr tag glitchirl if others would like to expand on this somewhat hallucinatory project.

  • You mean like when I went to the zoo a couple weeks ago and tried to milk the butterflies?

  • I saw a perfect bouquet of white flowers yesterday.  It was growing on the side of the road and I wondered who had died.  Glitch has also invaded my dreams.  This is particularly odd to me.  Faunasphere meant a great deal to me (I still miss it) but I only dreamed about it twice in two years.  I dream about Glitch every night.

  • There's a whole thread somewhere about knowing when you're addicted to glitch hehe. I know it's happened to me the earth thing and some instances with grilled cheeses etc etc etc.

  • My boyfriend almost hit a skunk with his car last week which caused the skunk to spray. My reaction was not "Shit, I hope the car doesn't smell!" but rather "I'm so glad there are no skunks in Glitch."

  • The glitchirl tag is slowly growing, including views of Groddle Heights, dullite, and the original patch! www.flickr.com/photos/tags/...

    My additions this morning:
Hey Fertilidust! Noooo it's bubbles... but bubbles grow on trees! www.flickr.com/photos/girlh...
Not quite a patch, not really a bog...but where's my shovel anyway.

  • Great pictures! :)
I found myself whistling one of the firefly tunes while making my bed last week.  I spend a lot of time in Shimla Mirch....

  • There's a tree on the side of the road that I drive by everyday on the way to work that is in a patch that looks exactly like the empty patches in Glitch--the first (and second, at least) time I saw it I got a strong urge to dig it.

Edited to add: also, a few days ago I saw something in RL (can't remember what it was) that gave me a sudden, strong, desire to scrape barnacles...

  • Yes, I saw a White Pine with new growth on the way to work this morning and thought good someone got the last egg, then I saw a spice and fruit tree, realized I should be watching where i was going and thought how pathetic I was and hoped the game would still be up and running when I got home!

  • Hubby and I bought some T-bone steaks yesterday and I put them in the fridge overnight so we could BBQ them today.  When I got up this morning and opened the fridge I had to laugh because those steaks looked just like the meat from our pigs in Glitch.  Yummm

  • My friend - not another player, mind you, just a friend who has seen me play and listens to me babble about the game incessantly - actually texted me one day to say she'd seen the blooming cherryblossom trees and immediately thought "Harvest the cherries!"

Yeah. Glitchy urges are apparently contagious.

(I'm trying to get her to come play as I know she would make an awesome tester, but she keeps insisting that she's not allowed to join until she takes the bar exam this summer. LE SIGH.)

  • Hubby takes the prize on this one (he plays on occasion)... I got a bucket of loam as part of my Mother's Day gift.
Not sure who was more excited, him or me.

  • I had a weird urge to call animals by there species names when in FS, and now I have a weird urge to name them. And I constantly wonder where am I going to get a tinkertool to fix pans, pots, knives, boards, sandwich presses, etc if they break. Also I almost went a plucked a strange red coloured fruit hanging by a red leafed plant thinking, I only have like 30 cherries left. And whenever I hear the words die, croak, or equivalent, I think of grapes. Then I get seized by an urge to meditate after drinking bubble tea...........

  • I walked past a building today that had a strange sort of pattern on it. If you can imagine large rectangles in a deep metallic bluish-brown, with regular large and small holes in it, you'd probably come to the same conclusion as I did: that it looked somewhere between the night sky and swiss cheese.

Not specifically Glitch-related, but it certainly had the right feel to it.

  • I also saw a young sapling planted at the campus where I work, and my first thought was that I wanted to pet it...

  • I walked past a patch of dry, weedy earth where a tree is about to be planted and felt an urge to *do something*. it took me a moment to realize I don't have a hoe ;-)

  • Lately I haven't been able to play much 'cuz of schoolwork, so I haven't been applying glitch logic to the real world. Back when I played nonstop the entire test though, I saw a bottle of hot sauce sitting on the ground outside my dorm and thought, "Hey, I can make an Earthshaker now."

At some point I'd like to try that. It seems like it would make a good hangover cure.

  • Had one of these earlier in the store, we were picking up some sorbet and I noticed cherry sorbet, my first thought was, huh, they didn't bother converting cherries to other fruit?

Also, I have a small tree growing in the back yard, I've been wanting to pet it to make it grow faster.

  • Not a Glitchy urge, per se, but this photo (hard to believe that's a photo!) looks so much like Glitch to me. Perhaps it's a street in Ix I haven't been on yet.

  • I passed a small pile of planks on the sidewalk and had to resist the urge to pick them up. Then laughed like a loon as people sidled away from me.
