Game of Crowns booths?

https://twitter.com/glitchlog/statuses/234053503067242496
"Sadly, Game of Crowns teleporters have been retired. (May come back in a better form later.) Good side: GoC tickets are now 4 player. Jump!"

The Game of Crowns group has been discussing this change and we are universally opposed. Booths were the only way to create 5-player games, and we all found those to be the most fun. We understand that booths certainly had their own issues (many ideas were posted to the forum with ways to improve them, to see if any players were waiting, to know if there was a game going that was currently playing and thus not yet joinable, etc.) What was the impetus for this change now? While booths had problems, this particular cure feels worse than the disease.

What intrigues me is (May come back in a better form later.) We have heard rumours of other multiplayer games coming (not just two-player races), is this linked to that?

  • Bad, bad, bad idea.

Removing the booths was bad enough but changing tickets to 4 players on top of that was a worse move. Now 3- and 5-player games are impossible, and it'll be even more difficult to get games started since you need 3, not 2, other players. If the reason for their removal was that people weren't using booths enough, why not make them more appealing in some way? For those of us who really enjoy GoC, especially with more people (5 players is the most fun and challenging way to play, and now that's out), this was a punch in the gut.

    WHAT DO WE WANT? BOOTHS!
WHEN DO WE WANT THEM? NOW!

  • "Good side", ha! It was hard enough finding 3 people who wanted to play, even in GoC and Co-Op GoC groups.

Those badges just got even more obnoxious.

  • The reason we did it now was the pain of watching new players come across the booths, pay their 50c, enter the location and stand there for 2-3 minutes until they left, 50c poorer, confused and disappointed. That is the experience of the overwhelming majority … until we can fix that properly we don't really have a choice but to get rid of them :\

I know it sucks for GoC fans but … one has to do what one has to do.

  • Wouldn't it be easier to just make the booths free?
Posted 4 months ago by tis Subscriber! | Permalink
  • ^ Why not have a required level to access the booths?

  • Stoot: Could we perhaps consider changing the booths to make games free at them? Or only charging 50c if a game actually goes starts? It's a bit more coding but it makes sense.

  • Why not make GoC free then? 5-player game of crowns is probably the single most enjoybale thing in the game for me and some other people; there has to be a better solution.

  • I love playing Game of Crowns  with people from the Game of Crowns group and people outside of it. This just makes it harder to gather people. With the booths, you could be at any other booth and still get into a game, now you have to organize people to meet up at a determined time and place.

Plus, I loved the "beam me up!" thing that you get from the booth only.

  • Making booths free doesn't solve the problem of stuck waiting when there's no other players. And even if there's games going on, a new player would have to hit the booth at the moment that the existing games are in "wait" state.

Speaking for the GoC group, we shall step into the void here and work to introduce the new players to the game. We'll be planning a series of parties to introduce new players to the game, even if we can only do 4-player games.

  • I remember Miri leaving notes for new players at the GoC boothes, linking to the group (we organise our games in group chat; getting longer games going outside of it is practically impossible). Maybe we could keep the boothes and start doing this again so new players can more easily find opponents until a better solution is found.

  • Nice. I activated a ticket, 3 people joined, I got sent to a different instance, and the other three couldn't start their game without a 4th. Not to mention that without a booth, they can't ever get another person to join as 4th player.

  • Aaaand.. without booths, if one player leaves, there's no chance for a new player to join that game. Everyone is forced to stop playing. :(
Posted 4 months ago by tis Subscriber! | Permalink
  • What if there was an upgrade card that needed to be purchased before using a booth?

The biggest problem without a booth is what tis described above: if someone leaves or crashes, that instance can no longer continue as no one else is able to join the same instance without the booth. Often the game has various bugs that cause a player to lose the timer and not be part of the game, even though they are still inside the game arena, and this requires a reload. Reloading while inside the arena often won't put a player back in the game, so the only way to continue the same instance is to leave the arena and re-enter through the booth.

  • And what Tom was describing just happened. Somebody glitched and it broke up the entire game. This happens fairly regularly, maybe once in 5 games. As one of the affected players just mentioned, this will increase GoC ticket sales dramatically (whoever owns the ticket dispensers will be one little rich creature... thing... figment of giant imagination in no time now) and, more importantly, lead to a lot of time unnecessarily spent on the loading screen.

  • Might I suggest the Lost Floor as a relocation for a single booth? That way, no one will really "stumble" upon it (I would have to guess GoC is explained to a newbie before secret streets), but people who desperately want it back can go there to find it.

  • would it have been so hard to enter the booth and go into some kind of queue where you don't pay for the game until it starts?

  • Long, ago I saw a video of a group game that was being developed.  This was long before GoC appeared.  It was funny and fun!  I hope they are still working on this one.  There were two teams and it was a little like vollyball only using a hog-tied pig instead of a ball.  Loved it!  It would be harder though to have enough people willing to play at the same time.  Multi-player games might work better at parties where several people will be in the same place for a while.

  • Tis: "Nice. I activated a ticket, 3 people joined, I got sent to a different instance …"

That sucks — that was not the intended effect of the change (it was to let the tickets require 4 to start, but allow 3 to play).
Misanthrope: Where's the Lost Floor? Link?

flask: "would it have been so hard to enter the booth and go into some kind of queue where you don't pay for the game until it starts?"

That, unfortunately, is exactly the hard part.

  • Everyone: we know it is not good and will do our best to make it better.

  • Perhaps you could make the booths similar to Party Packs - purchasable from toy vendors and a one time use sort of thing (not super expensive mind you) that "new" players are unlikely to purchase unknowingly (as the item info would be displayed PRIOR to purchase). Just my thoughts, anyway...

  • "The lost floor" [ LA9QUBPI49J2MOB ] is linked from the top left corner of Goorsh Gam in Tamila. There is also "The missing floor" and "The forgotten floor" in the series.

  • :( :( :(

Please please please let this just be an interim situation.

For the small but vocal community that loves playing GoC, this is crushing.  (For the reasons my peers have expressed above).

  • Oh I hadn't realised the booths allowed for five player games.

I can see why they weren't working out as they were though. Having several across the world probably made it harder to run into a game spontaneously, and with player streets many people spend more time on those than in the world. It might help to have one on a busy street, a bit like Cebarkul but somewhere else since there's already a reason for people to congregate there.

  • "Having several across the world probably made it harder to run into a game spontaneously"

Oh no, not at all. I mean, the chances of "running into a game spontaneously" have always been incredibly low to begin with (people have to be in the waiting area of a game the moment you join - this is solved by using GoC group chat), but boothes aren't tied to instances. You can join the same game from any booth, no matter if started from a different booth or a ticket. well... could....

  • I have never played GoC, because I am terrible at jumping.  I bought a ticket in my first few days of playing, just to see what it was, and didn't fret too much about my lost currants, just put it down to experience and learning about the game.

Couldn't there just have been an info pop up about the game and a button to continue to buying a ticket.  Can't see that it would be very difficult to do this, admittedly what I know about programming you could write on the head of a small pin. :)

  • If not the lost floor, then the backyard of the large alakol model home.  It's impossible for anyone to go there except intentionally.

  • I'm one of avid GoCers of the GoC group; and I hope the booths are brought back.

This is a sad day, when you can't take a one day break from Glitch, and come back to have your one passion ripped out.

  • I figure TS is working on updating GoC booths with more information for new players. Still, I don't see the harm of one booth being left on one of the original streets. If it's just one, in the meantime lots of new players can learn just as before...from other players.*:)

  • I'm curious, and maybe I missed it in this thread.  Where is the 2d booth now?  I see one is at the Large Alakol Model Home, is the other in the Lost Floor room, as was requested?  Not that I even play much, but was just curious as to where it is since I'd rather join via the booth than via the tickets.

Ah right, I didn't realise they were linked either. All my Games of Crowns have been from tickets, and then not very frequently.
