Animal question: Death, Starvation, and Fleeing (Leaving)

How do the animals die, and do they leave anything behind? So far I have figured out that piggies will die if not fed they will die/ leave x10 meat. Butterflies on the other hand have a life span, and eventually they just die... or if overcrowded they will leave. And I have heard they leave butterfly milk/butterfly eggs (only if they die though). For chickens, they will die if not squeezed or over-squeezed. Also if they get overcrowded they will leave.

So my basic questions are: Do pigs leave if overcrowded? Can butterflies die any other way? Same with chickens?

And if I missed anything or over-exaggerated some things or got anything incorrect, please let me know. And please tell me anything you know related to this :)

  • I was told butterflies will die faster the more they are milked. I've only ever seen them leave behind milk but I don't remember how much. I don't have much chicken experience and I've never overcrowded my animals before, so I can't help you there.

  • Ive noticed the animals get sad and kind of sulk when they are overcrowded, then poof. The chickens and pigs anyways. The butterflies I havent noticed so much, i have received a butterfly egg from an expired butterfly. I tend not to overcrowd my animals though. I have one butterfly milker for my11 butterflies and they seem to stay alive a while if i hatch them all at once. Got 2 feeders and 2 meat collectors for my 8 pigs and only 7 chickens. Pigs will leave meat and sometimes a plop too. Ive seen a chicken squeezed to death too!

  • I've received butterfly eggs/milk from dead butterflies. My butterflies have only ever died from milk collectors. I've got a bunch of butterflies that I don't sing to regularly and they've been alive for months!

  • Butterflies will die if overcrowded and have a limited lifespan regardless (milking machines reduce their lifespan more quickly). They typically leave 4 milk behind.

Piggies will die if they starve or if they are overcrowded. They will only leave a pile of meat and a plop if they were starved.

Chickens will die if they are overcrowded. I have never seen one leave anything behind.

  • All animals have a 'lifespan' of sorts.

Butterflies leave behind little milk, some milk, few eggs, or 10 eggs when they die. Chickens, I have no idea. Possibly grain. Piggies leave behind little meat, some meat, or 20 meat when they die.

Butterflies have a considerably shorter lifespan than the others. Chickens are very long, and take many squeezes to die. Many people have never seen one die!

When an animal has been ... er, transported to the next world by your hands, they disappear in a puff of pink mist and you receive some iMG.

When I say lifespan, I mean number of squeezes/nibbles/milks. I believe massaging butterflies also takes away from their lifespan, and probably likewise for pigs.

Piggies can have their lifespan replenished easily by feeding them, through feeders or by hand. That is why they never seem to die by over-nibbling, but only by hunger/overcrowding, because they usually die of hunger before they are over-nibbled. Though I assume if enough people got together to nibble one single piggy in a short time span, it would die in a puff of pink smoke too.

Butterflies can also have their lifespans replenished by singing to them (new addition, previously singing also depleted their lifespan and you could kill one by singing to it... a voice to die for? :D). However this is a little bonus and has very little advantage. You would need many singings by many people to make a difference

Milkers and collectors will also take away lifespan from butterflies and piggies, respectively.

When animals say they're claustrophobic or crowded, that is more of a warning, or a whining. Animals can usually adapt to their new environment over time. The ideal amount of animals for a fully expanded home street or house is 40 piggies, 20 butterflies, 20 chickens (commonly called the 40/20/20 formation). While butterflies may seem to overcrowd and fall at 18, just leave them at 20 and they'll eventually adapt. However if the numbers are too big compared to the maximum, they will die. While it may seem scary to just leave them there and hope they adapt, it's a leap of faith. Just trust me with the 40/20/20 thing.

However, it is possible to go over that 'maximum' of 40/20/20. Some people have more than 20 butterflies, or 40 piggies on their street. This may be due to that they have less of the other animals. It is also possible to slowly introduce one by one more animals onto the street and have them adapt. However you cannot do this too many times, or they will reach the true maximum of their species, and die.

  • 40/20/20--Is the same I've observed in my own yard.

The butterflies were more susceptible and when I had 44/20/23 it was the butterflies that would leave, not die.  No milk or eggs.

  • Yeah overcrowding just makes some of them leave, tho it does look like they explode.

I have not seen more than 43 pigs on a fully expanded house/street with the 20% more animals upgrade card. I did not try to add a 44th, but animals will start crying about overcrowding well before the real limit. Basically there's two limits to animal population:

    * Soft Limit: Achieved on a fully expanded street/20% upgrade card for pigs at around 36 or 37. Half the piggies will get sad and start crying about overcrowding. Leave them for 10 minutes or so, and they'll be fine.

    * Hard Limit: Achieved in the above scenario for pigs likely at 44 (untested). Adding more pigs than this hard limit will cause random ones to explode until the limit has been satisfied (not sure how many will explode, if you trigger this... not tested).

Animals do not seem to even acknowledge other species' existence, I don't believe that the amount of chickens or butterflies you have will affect the piggy mood or population allowance. Piggies will get the 'other animals make me happy' mood boost with just one or two other pigs on the street with them with no other species around.

So my belief is, even if most of your animals become sad whilst overcrowding, as long as you don't see any of them explode in the next minute or two, you should be ok. On your street you can monitor this by reloading or refreshing the webpage about your street to see the number of that animal on the street. If that number does not decrease during the sadness phase, they will be fine (eventually).

The threshold between butterflies simply getting sad and exploding seem much smaller than other species. Their soft and hard limits are likely much closer together than say, pigs. Not sure about chickens, I've never pushed chicken populations beyond their soft limit.

  • I have 5 butterflies on my street that have been there since the switch to the new housing.  I only hatched them and haven't pet or milked them myself (because I don't have animal skills, I just like them for decoration).

I would say butterflies stick around as long as you don't touch them for sure.

  • I believe butterfly life spans are based on number of interactions, rather than amount of time. That means that when a butterfly is massaged or milked (by a glitch or a milker), the lifespan shortens, but when you sing to it, its lifespan is increased.

I have also seen piggies leave behind corn seeds along with a pile of meat when they die.
