Getting rid of Global Chat will ruin the community feel....

I really feel it will be a huge mistake to get rid of Global Chat.  It is the one thing that matter where you are, you can talk to anyone, newbie or oldie, at all times.  If this is removed, I think it will cause a huge amount of segregation, frustration, and isolation.

I think it is a sad move for the game to take this away.

  • At first I was shocked and saddened when I heard yall were getting rid of global chat. I LOVE global chat. but Blanky has a point there, global wouldn't be fun if it was so full it went to fast to read :/

  • Yeah, I do, even now, have to sometimes scroll back up and read things that I missed.  With a lot more people, it will probably not be functional.  But I hope they implement something like local or maybe even an open quest chat?  Tonight, some of us who were frustrated in our ghost hunting efforts got to chatting, and someone who had completed the quest offered to lead us on a tour.  There ended up being between 8 or 15 of us following each other as we walked or teleported through the streets, and it was fun, and it wouldn't have happened without an open chat.  (And also if we got separated, that was how we could find each other again!)  I know that's how many of us got the peter out peat quest as well.

  • What I'm hearing is that the thing we like best about Global Chat is that it's just that: global.  Even the idea of a regional chat is getting a lot of "meh"s.

I'm wondering if this couldn't all be solved by various channels for different topics, such as general quests, new quests, parties, projects, looking for..., general shenanigans, etc.  Even with this small group, when there are 50 people on Global Chat, the conversation threads get a little out of control; channels would rein this in significantly and keep us from having to close the window because we're sick of hearing about ghost sightings.

  • I still don't think groups are an adequate solution. There are too many different groups already, imagine how many more when the game goes live. I love lips idea.

Sometimes you just need those silly conversations and funny comments people throw in the game to really make it glitch, and the reason its so great is because anyone can join in, vs group where its just limited to the people in the group.

I think regional chat wouldn't be as good as global, but the next best solution. it would add an interesting new option to consider when choosing houses for those of us that spend a lot if time at home, you would want to live by people you enjoy taking to

  • After having been reading Global chat when someone had a hissy fit and spent lots of time sending a single letter "h" over and over and over it might be nice to have a "block member" option in all chats no matter what size or shape they end up.
While I will miss Global chat I can appreciate the problems (play WoW loads and almost always leave the trade and lfg chats to avoid the spammers/beggers and other annoying things) but I am sure you will come up with a viable alternative

  • I've been thinking the same as Lip Glossary. Kingdom of Loathing runs their chat that way, and they seem to do okay.

  • Oh, I like that LipGlossary.  As it stands now, when Global Chat goes away, we can either chat with whomever is on the street we are on, or groups we are in.   The ability to have different chats, outside of groups, would be very nice!

I was also thinking, what about the ability to see where the largest population of glitch are located on the map?

    Regional chat?

  • Yeah lip that is such a great idea. Best one I've heard/seen yet

  • I always turn Global Chat off BUT when there seems to be something going on in-game I'll turn it on at least long enough to find out what I need to know but then off it goes again.
So, I do like having it even though I rarely look in there.

  • Global chat is gonna get mad crazy bonkers once the game is live and I personally would never join it. Regional chat is a great idea, though.

What do you guys think about temporary Groups to which new players are automatically joined when they start? This would help provide the community feel of Global but without having quite so many players in the same channel at the same time. Sort of like the NPC/New Player corporations in Eve Online.

Additionally, a "Newbie Help" group would be a great place for veteran players and new players to get in together, act silly, and help each other out. I think there is already a player-run group for that purpose, but automatically joining every new player to it and allowing them to then close it or leave the group would be extra cool.

  • -1  I have no need for global chat. On every MMORPG that I've been on before global chat has been nothing more than a place for people to hurl insults, have fits and beg.  No thank you.  I won't miss it.

  • Maybe you could make "hide player" instead of block player, that way if someone is spamming then you can just hide their posts, it just sounds friendlier than block.

  • What if there was an in-universe explanation for the Global Chat, like cell phones or computers.

  • I think there needs to be some kind of chat that extends beyond streets; today's Rook attack(s) strengthened my belief.  Maybe not global chat, but regional chat would definitely be useful for this.

  • If I repeat something that's already been said before in this thread  I can only plead "tl/dr".

Selectable Public channels rather than one huge channel that I've given up trying to follow on a regular basis - As @Bees! pointed out so well it's just too much traffic to be much use after a while. By region might be a method, but the number of regions is supposed to continue to expand. After a while that's going to get crazy in simple channel count. Several MMOs I've seen use a global channel with a cost system. Right now it's simply to convenient and used more casually than it should be.

  • I love the global chat channel but I agree that with so many new members, it will be impossible to read it!
Thinking back though, it would be nice to have a channel for "Quest Helpers" or something similar - there is no way I would have been able to organise a peat bog digging expedition otherwise!!!
    Just my thoughts :) x

  • Regional chat sounds ok.

Or maybe global chat could be limited by having players expend game energy while using it?  Maybe with a game "radio" or something like that.

  • It would be nice if instead of just scrapping global chat all together, it was re-imagined as an official IRC channel. I'm okay with it not being embedded in the game window, in fact I would prefer to stick it on my second monitor anyways...

  • I love having global chat jabbering away in the background, and will miss it dearly. I understand it has to go, that it can never scale as we grow, but it will be missed.

I just hope that what replaces it will preserve that delightful randomness - the serendipitous discovery of an interesting and entertaining conversation between people you might otherwise have never encountered...

  • I feel I must push this.......

    Global Chat 2.0

For those that will miss it as much as I, please join this group.  *hugs*

  • I see the plusses and minuses for global - I think if it's kept it will get flooded and be nonstop.  I will be joining Global 2.0.

  • Already joined Global Chat 2.0 - been a part of it for awhile... it will be my default chat channel when the game reopens for real

Wow. It's about to go live.  This is kinda exciting.

  • I like the global chat but if there are a lot of new people i could see chat scrolling so fast that it would be hard to keep up with a conversation. I think it will also encourage people to join groups. There is probably nothing stopping someone from making a "global chat" group. Either way i think it could work with some adjustments.

  • Although i have no problem with global if you guys like it, I have no use for it already. I see my friends in there and it's exciting for a moment, then my "Hi" scrolls past, I'm doin somethin, their "whatcha up to flirty" scrolls by, the conversation is broken at best. I think the best thing about no Global will be giving all the newbs a crash course in Groups!

  • Another solution I've seen that I think is worth reiterating: make Global Chat a tool-based skill.  Perhaps a radio (made of ham?  :P ).  More levels would enable a wider range, or maybe a "tunable" range (e.g. Ilmenskie Caverns, regardless of wherever you are in Ur).  This idea also reinforces the exploratory feel of Glitch--when you start out as a newbie, you won't be overwhelmed by Ur-wide news; but, as you level and wander, you tune into a broader scope.

  • Personally I love Global Chat. This is my very first MMO (first online game besides Pogo, actually), and I was incredibly quiet at first. Never really talked to anyone as I stumbled through my first few tests, and then a friend told me to look on Global Chat if I needed help doing a quest.

I have made so many friends since then and really feel a sense of community because of global. I don't really get that feeling very often in local chat unless there's a party or a street project (or rook attack). Hopefully the devs can give us something similar but I can certainly understand that with all the new players, chat will scroll by at an alarming speed and it will be too hard to keep up.

That being said, I have joined Global Chat 2.0 ;)

  • Global Chat is OK enough, but it's difficult at times to follow the conversations when there are so many participants. At its busiest (I should note that I'm GMT +8) I've only seen numbers (based on /who) of ~30 people, so I am loathe to think what numbers such could reach post-launch. I somewhat doubt that its removal would in any way cause the community vibe to degrade, as there is great potential for animosity to be created there by a minority of players.

That said, I see no reason for it to go away should some like it. However, I would hope that, as Blanky stated, more permanent, non-group-linked, semi-"moderated" (by Guides or Staff or whomever) channels will be available to join. Those channels being location-based as their theme makes sense, but it seems unnecessary for, e.g., the Besara channel to be only accessible to those in Besara -- all should be able to access it in the public listing, and should one leave Besara, one should not be kicked out of the Besara channel.

I have no problems with group-linked channels -- I like them a great deal -- yet they should not be the only option outside of Live Help and local chat. In order to see the group-linked channels, one must first be a member of a group, and finding groups on the current system is difficult at best. Were the search function to improve, this would not be an issue, but as it stands it is quite difficult to find relevant groups outside of either the newest few groups or the most popular groups. I can easily see new users being as put off of joining groups as I had been when I first joined for said reason.
