Are You As Uninterested In Competeing In Glitch As I Am?

This is a thread for people who are uninterested in the competitive aspects of glitch to make themselves known.  It's fine and well for everyone to play within the game in the fashion they choose, but sometimes those of us who are non-competitive are quiet and go a little more unnoticed than we should.   I thought maybe others like me could add to this thread.

I come to glitch as a pastime, not thinking of it as a 'game' in the sense of there being a score.  I have never visited the Leaderboard page and probably never will.

Quoins have never really interested me.  They are a little perk, and like other resources, I gather then where I find them, but when I see somebody else in an area jumping around to snatch them up, I'm never motivated to do more than think about silly I would feel jumping everywhere I went.

I like producing things, I like gathering things.  I like sharing things.  I even like participating in exchanges like the marketplace of Tower SDBs and the Auction.  But not because I want to 'get ahead' of anybody, nor to take advantage of anybody else or raise my 'currant number' higher than theirs.  This is a game of plenty, and there's no zero-sum.  I can thrive and my glitch can build an appealing house, home street, and tower without it mattering if anybody else is 'ahead' of me.  In fact, it's rewarding to work toward everybody being thriving and happy.

Anyhow, recent updates seem like they aim to make playing Glitch more competitive, and I know there are some of us who don't find that very interesting.  Add your voice to the thread if you agree.  We still have a game that is mostly non-competitive and we should make ourselves known.

And don't feel like you have to compete against my idea if you do enjoy competing.  There's room for everyone in glitch.

  • I enjoy some competition but am not mad about getting ahead.  I do like the games and oddly, the Leaderboards.  I do the things that I enjoy and do not work hard at what I don't enjoy but I do most things.  I do try everything at least once because I never know what I might like until I try it.  I have surprised myself a few times.

I have never been a very social person.  I just never really knew how to be social.  I have no sibs and moved often because my Dad had an Air Force career.  I have not been well socialized.  My Mother wasn't much help with socializing me.  She grew up in a small town and had lots of relatives so she was pretty well set in society.  I have, theerfore, been surprised at how much I have enjoyed many of the group activities, parties, games and such.  Things that I never really did in Real Life.

You might find that you too would enjoy some of the competitions that you believe you do not like.  You do not have to "Win" or reach the "Top" to enjoy competitions in Glitch.  Join in a few of the group activities.  You don't need to stand out unless you want to.  Ride some Rainbows and run nekkid through Ur!  You never know, you may be more of a "Player" than you think!

  • I'm not much for the Mario-like aspects of the game, either, but I've found it very advantageous to keep increasing my quoin multiplyer anyway.  In a matter of minutes, I can collect enough iMG or Currants to pay for things I want.

Jump some quoins, get some massive iMG/currants and then go back to working on achievements.  That's how I roll.

Skip the jumping if you don't like it, but you're missing some easy benefits.

  • I like Glitch because there's almost no competitiveness in it.

  • I'm not competitive either. I'm not sure I even see how recent updates make the game more competitive. You don't have to worry about leaderboards to participate in a Feat unless you are competitive enough to care about them. I logged in, mediated, broke the new GPU client in Cebarkul, and generally had a good time. I got the impression from Stoot's posts that once the Feats get tuned better it will take server-wide collaboration to have a chance at completing them.

The quoin-jumping change means you can jump with someone and get benefits whether or not you hit the quoin. I think it removes competition, not adds it.

  • I am interested, but I only compete with myself.  "Self," I said to me one day, "maybe you could try to visit every location in the game!"  (This was back when we had neighborhoods *and* neighborhood blocks counted as locations.)  I used the leaderboards as guides for whether or not I was missing places.  (This was also before the ability to have comprehensive lists of locations since they had to be updated manually and new blocks were being added all the time.  Also, the encyclopedia didn't tell you if you'd been somewhere before.)

Other competitions I have with myself in Glitch involve such favorites as "Figure Out What This New Thing Does as Fast as You Can" and "How Can I Break This Today?" (New ways to break programs are something I turned from an innate ability in to a personal challenge.  Far, far less frustrating this way.)  We've had brief appearances by "How Much Imagination Can I Get Without Donating?" and "Let's Guess How Many Puns There Are On Average In Street Names" (that one is tricky, because my attention span won't hold out long enough to make sure I'm not missing some of the more obscure ones when I try to see how close my guess is).  Oh, and "What Can I Do With Money?"  That's usually broken down in to "Tweak the Economy Via Large-Scale Movement of Goods" and "Hand Out Stuff To Random People For Fun".  On a wholly related note, I don't think I've ever had more than 50,000 currants at one time, and that much took a lot of effort.  Way, way more fun to use it on hiding things behind scenery.

  • Okay, Dorgan, it is ON!!  You and me in a fight to the glitch.  I'm gonna win!
Yeah, unless it is a test or a contest, I don't compete.  Or, if it is my brother in RL, I clearly have the better nose and chin although he wins at being taller.

Interesting post.  I have found myself running away from crowds (RL too) but not so much lately.  Sometimes, I think that there could be competition from others but mostly I've not found that here.  If there is another glitch collecting quoins on a street, I just stop jumping and collecting.  I can't help it, I don't want to try to get to it first.

Hahaha, @MagicMonkey, I often wonder that in RL, far too often in fact.  "How Can I Break This Today?"  Yes, how and how fast?  I compete with myself on many levels and sometimes it is fun, sometimes it is funny.

So, high noon at the place we all compete, no cheating.

  • On the whole, I'd have to say that I'm way more uninterested in competing than you are. I'm the most uncompetitive person you'll ever meet. I challenge you to find anyone more uninterested with competition than I am.

  • If you don't want to compete - then don't, simple as that...

  • My RL equivalent to the breaking competition is more of a "Ooo, what does THIS button do?" game.  Almost always the same results though. =D

  • Like Magic Monkey, I compete with myself. Self-imposed quests when achieved are quite an exhilarating feeling.

  • The new quoin sharding should help you enjoy the quoin gathering areas then. I know I found it much more entertaining this afternoon when I didn't have to race anyone for the quoin. Also, I liked not feeling like a jerk for grabbing a quoin when someone else was coming toward it from the other side.

This is definitely an instance of TS making the game less competitive. Enjoy!!

  • I'm pretty much the same as Magic Monkey, I give myself challenges and goals, I play as I want to play. I'm not fond of competitiveness, however the only competition I DO participate in is Game of Crowns because it's fun!

  • Yeah, I don't compete also. I believe that's it possible for me to level up to 60 quickly, but I rather not as I enjoy a leisurely pace of play. My guess is TS is trying to put little bits of everything for everybody and they release it in waves (housing options, new games, explorable areas, weekly feats, etc.) so when they finally relaunch the game, incoming players can choose which aspect of Glitch gameplay they enjoy the most.

So yes, I am uninterested in competing in Glitch, but I am interested in other things that Glitch has to offer.

  • I tend to play at my own pace. Not really getting myself out their. Only if its to have fun or something else random.

  • I don't really compete either. I'm also not that social of a player. I add friends who I think are interesting not because I've talked to them in game but because I like to see what others are up to. I don't play GoC cause it seems really boring to me. I make my own challenges, I've very close to completing my goal of a 10000 energy tank and I'm closing in on level 60. These are my own personal goals and challenges. I like this game because it's not competitive. I'm not racing or fighting anyone. I'm just me escaping reality.

  • IRL, I'm pretty competitive and survival-of-the-fittest. Here, I don't have to be, and I generally choose not to be. I never pass by quoins when I can help it, just because they're useful, but I rarely do the game tickets or GoC anymore; leaderboards hold zero interest for me, and lately I either keep to myself or talk to a pretty small group of people (I'm not a snob, I just deal with a lot of lag, so going to crowded areas or carrying on 14 conversations at once is frustrating for me to the point that I just end up logging out after awhile).
Mostly I've just been making furniture and decorating (particularly in my Tower), but, tbh, that's wearing a bit thin. I'm going to have to start either socializing again or at least finding fun things to do.

  • I don't tend to compete much in the game - there are some quests I will never do, some badges I will never achieve, because I don't care and have no desire to obtain them...but I do like the idea of leaderboards for certain things and for special things like feats and the old street projects to serve as mini-goals for those that want to obtain them.  It's not like anyone "loses" by not being at the top of the leaderboard,  it just shows how committed you are to that activity.  And you can easily chose not to be on the leaderboard if you don't want to compete.  To me leaderboards may scratch an itch for some, while it does nothing for others...don't take away something that some may like, and if you don't like it, just choose to not participate.  This game is designed for multiple play styles...allow those that are goal oriented to have something to achieve after they have done all the quests, gotten most or all of the badges, etc.

  • Totally agree with keeping the non-competitive aspects of the game growing....trying to beat someone constantly is not my idea of fun.  That's why I play Glitch instead of World of Warcraft or similar games.  Add my voice to the desire to keep non-competitively interesting things developing in this game. :-)

  • I'm not competitive either and am trying to be more social in the game (way too shy for my own good). I like just collecting things, learning everything I can, and exploring. As someone else mentioned earlier, I like seeing what others are up to, not to compete but simply to observe how others play.

  • I'm less competitive than you. I'm at least 50% less competitive, therefore I win! I win I win, I am the least competitive glitch EVAR!!!1!!!one!!!

  • I apologize for the way I titled this thread. It's almost worded like I was trying to "out non-compete" other players. Really it was intended to promote a consensus. I'm glad to see some others' views on the matter.
Posted 95 days ago by Feldspar Gravity Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I agree with Lucille Ball.  I think most of the competition in Glitch is generated by the players who want it to exist, and not by TS.  Which is how I like it.  I like to win as much as the next glitch, but I don't like feeling like I *need* to win.

(I could live without the sub-subset of glitchen who seem to feel that not only does it need to be a competition, but that the best way to "win" is to be a grabby, insensitive asshat, but fortunately there's not THAT many of them.  Also I sort of wish there was a hard limit on skills to encourage the interdependence aspect?  I feel like the currants economy encourages the competitive aspect by its nature, and it would be nice to have a mechanic to balance that.  But IANAD, what do I know.)

Anyway, yeah. I like growing stuff, making stuff, bouncing around and looking at the scenery, playing minigames -- I am SO HAPPY about the keepable upgrades, because I like minigames but I'm not especially competitive *or* social, so it's nice to have games I can play by myself whenever I want.

  • This is really the coolest part of Glitch - we get to set our own definition of "winning".

My next goal is 5m¢ -- but not because I need it.

  • Dorgan, you forgot about the challenge/duel??  That is okay, just don't apologize.  I won.

Seriously though, don't apologize, it is just a thread and that is where these ideas belong.

Plus, you won the forum post best topic on the block award!  Just like the song where they sing "you are the most beautiful girl in the room, depending on the room".  I like that one!

  • Well both in RL and in Glitch, I tend to seek out a small group of friends rather than immerse myself in large crowds of people I do not know. When they existed, I shied away from the street projects because of this and also because of lag. I think I will shy away from many of the Feats for the same reason. I do enjoy some of the games that have been created though. GOC is fun because it's just like running around playing tag with your friends when you were little. There really is no winner-it just ends when you get bored of running around. I like getting badges though and challenge myself to do the quests or visit all the streets or gather 100 blocks of peat in a day or whatever. I always need a goal or task when I sign into Glitch otherwise I get bored.

  • I believe that competition and progress are two very distinct things, and I confess I am a little worried by people who don't clearly distinguish between the two.

I don't play to "be ahead" of anybody (competition), but I do enjoy collecting badges/skills/quests etc. (progress) for the sheer pointless pleasure of making my character "grow" in respect of what it was the day before.

By the way, I guess that people choosing Glitch to compete could really choose much better proving grounds...

  • I'm concerned that you're attributing a "competition" mindset to other players that may not be quite accurate. I don't quoin hop to beat other people, I do it because it's fun. Even when there is a "race" type element like in the ancestral grounds or in the new feats, many glitches are likely to help others or look for a way that everyone can get a resource rather than take away from others. Even people who play in more competitive ways, like key-campers can be generous in this way. While there was a competitive element to old street projects trying to win the trophies, I also saw a lot of people helping each other get the ingredients to contribute. One can try hard or work toward a goal without perceiving that goal as zero-sum, or thinking one has failed if one isn't in first place.
Posted 94 days ago by Niqster Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Ayzad, I hope you're not including me in that -- I know competition and progress are different.  I really do compete with myself.  It's a matter of saying things like "I bet I can't break more things today than I did yesterday!" or whatever else is appropriate and treating it like a contest mentally.  I find that fun!
Posted 94 days ago by Magic Monkey Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I do not compete at all in the game. I see the game as escapism from real life. My favorite thing to do is take snapshots, then caption them in a humorous way. I have done a few quests, but pretty much in only two categories. I really like helping my fellow Glitchen, especially beginners. Playing Glitch was a lonely, frustrating ordeal until a few Glitchen dropped in on me and began socializing with me. I'm much happier now and finally enjoy being here.

  • Glitch isn't a competition for me, personally. I think it's refreshing that the game is built on imagination, creativity, and kindness and that you can approach it with essentially any play style you choose.

As far as getting noticed, I believe accomplishment itself tends to go hand in hand with recognition. It's natural that those who are leading are going to get noticed first. For me, this doesn't matter. I'm a shy person in RL, so consequently, my glitch is also quite shy. I tend to keep to myself, but I appreciate finding small groups of friends or being surprised by the random kindness of other glitches and remembering that that is essentially what this game is about. I'm also a very goal-oriented person, so I have a lot of fun questing, collecting and creating things in the game. I'm still quite a noob, so I have a lot to learn!

So, yes, the competitive spirit is often present even in a game like Glitch, but I think it's usually kept within the spirit of the game. Comparatively, Glitch stands on its own in the MMO world because in games like World of Warcraft, it is a lot easier to get caught up in the competitive nature of the game and think that you need the best gear, the best dps, the best whatever in order to enjoy the game (and other players can tend to randomly cut you down if you don’t do something right or if you were unaware of something). I think Glitch is one of the rare games which has created an engaging environment that is welcoming instead of intimidating or overly competitive. Glitch allows you to experience the whole world however you wish to. And to share with and encourage others as much as you can. That’s the beauty of it. No competition required. :D
