Anchor to a street in UR

I've read several discussions on the main board lamenting the loss of place that came with imagined houses.

Various alternatives have been suggested, including "theme routes" to simulate the experience of actually visiting a region.

I haven't seen it suggested yet, but what about if we have the equivalent of Note Poles on each street in UR (or perhaps as an option on the street signs themselves) that provides a way for you to attach your private street to a specific street in UR.  One street per customer, please.

Your home street, of course, would always be sorted to the top of the pop-up, scrollable list.  If the list grows really long, it's not a big problem, because you're always at the top left corner of the list. Our street could be represented by the same little bubbleheads that appear on our front doors and towers.  The hover-text could list the top resources on our street.

The list might even be sorted on visits - so that the most visited streets rise to the top of the list.  It would also be helpful to give a small amount of iMG for visiting home streets.

  • And watch as the lag in Cebarkul goes through the roof! :D

I am fan of some kind of in-Ur anchoring for home streets. The UI for doing it, though, is really tricky. I'm still trying to come up with one that I think would be successful.

  • Hmmm, yeah, lag.  Perhaps an instanced seam street in each region?

  • I'm not getting the concept here.  I don't see why I want to attach my /home street to a specific street location in Ur.

Once I've chosen this Ur "home base" street, are you then going to take away the ability to return /home from anyplace in the world or other people's home streets? -10,000, thanks NO!  That would be a Giant step backwards in currant game functionality.

Are you trying to give me the ability to get to a specific place in Ur from /home?  Then the pole should be on my street, not the street in Ur.  This would be cool, IFF I still have the iMG menu link to the last place I actually was in Ur.  This ends up being rather like an extra free teleportation spot, with no energy cost.

Are you trying to create a way for me to visit other people that also choose the same "home base" in Ur?  I have no objection to that, but I probably wouldn't find it very useful.  I never visited my street neighbors, and hardly ever even saw them, under the Beta 1 housing system.  The recent changes the Devs have made to make it easier to visit other people's home streets from their profiles and in game are doing a good job of connecting me to people.

I think a lot of folks would pick their home base for usefulness under their playing strategy, such as Cebarkul, or a street next to the Ancestral Lands, or a good mining region in the Deeps.  A few people would pick out of homesickness for Beta 1, but once we get new players coming in, that would have no meaning for them.  If the choice is permanent, if you make a bad choice when you are new, are you stuck forever?  If you can change this any time without cost, then teleportation becomes not obsolete, but definitely less necessary.

  • I'm talking about reviving the sense of place that housing quarters once offered.  /home doesn't need to go away.  It's more about making a connection to UR and building community around those regions.

I used to feel as if I lived in the Firebog.  Now my street/house just feels like a cardboard cutout of something that pretends to be a Firebog.

ETA: Kah, your idea about putting a link on our own street sign is a good idea.

  • If you want that "sense of place," being able to pick one free modifiable teleport spot from my /home doesn't do that for me.  You'd have to make changing it *really* expensive to prevent me from changing it at least weekly.

If you want to have your Ur-link be based on your street style, then having a firebog style should limit you to only firebog links in Ur, and having a Groddle style should limit you to only Groddle links.  Which currantly does not work in my mind, since many street region styles are limited to subscribers only.  Also, where would it make sense to link a Toxic Moon street style too?

If you want a "sense of community" folks are building that for themselves right now, with groups and routes and keyholding and communal tower projects, and even the Cebarkul mourners legion.  Most of them (except the last) are just not based on any particular strict geography, which I sort of see as a feature rather than a bug.

I admit I have a bit of nostalgia because I never have reason to go to Marakesh Meadows anymore, but really, I don't see that I'd use a free teleport link from /home to go there all the time anyway.  Unless there's something for me and a lot of other glitchen to do there, like the "coming soon" Group Halls, I wouldn't stay longer than a harvesting trip through the street anyway.

  • Changing it weekly would be fine, too.  I moved often in the old system, just so I could experience different regions.  I only settled in the bogs towards the end of housing 1.  So, I do think it should be theme-limited to the matching region.

I'd link Toxic Moon to another game because it doesn't resonate with me at all.

I get what you're saying and I sense that you understand my point.  Mostly, it's a feeling that something was lost in the transition that hasn't been properly replaced.  Groups and routes are fine and people seem to be migrating, but perhaps I'm lazy and it's more work than I want to put in to a game.

It should be fun, first and foremost.

  • I still really, really wish that we could have neighbors actually ON our home street, not a signpost away. That would have gone a LONG way to creating as sense of place.

I keep hoping that group halls will somehow make that feel possible. By then, though, I fear all my friends will have left the game. :(
