Game Play Updates

Hello!

We have a few game play changes, so here you go!

You know the Prove Your Rook Fighting Mettle quest, where you smashed the Rook egg? It's been taken out temporarily, while we work out some game mechanics to make it play smoother later on. You'll still be able to finish it if it is in your quest log, but it won't be offered.

The Emotional Bear now has a new verb! 'Anthropomorphize'- you get a mood boost when giving the bear a hug. Awww, give the bear a hug! The boost is available once per game day. :)

We've changed base costs of (unimbued) Teleportation Scripts, from 50 to 5, because it was too easy to create them just for profit. The script now also takes 1 energy to make, and requires Paper and Quill, plus Teleportaion IV or V, and Penpersonship skills, of course.

Also- items are locked on the ground until you walk away from them. If you go offline, or move away from the item, the lock is removed, but until then someone can't pick that item up.

  • Yay hug boosts! Those rascaly emo bears are delightful!

ETA: The lock is awesome! Thank you all so much for implementing that one! I've said it before and I'll say it again, you devs are the best!

  • What's the most important one?

  • Hmmm, that newbs are now popping out in all parts of the world, not just Groddle? - just spitballing as to what might be the 'most important one'...

  • The bag view is centred over the bag that is currently open?

  • Had to leave us hanging!

  • That's one too, b3achy (the list above us not exhaustive).

The one I meant was the way items you drop are locked temporarily, so others cannot pick them up. They unlock when you move away or after 30 seconds have passed. It prevents the "yoink" when you accidentally drop something or while moving stuff around to organize bags.

  • Blitz, yeah, that was another one :)

I'm already in bed or I'd go dig up the rest :)

  • Oh, thank you for the anti-yoink measure!  Great updates!

  • *Hugs* to the TS.. must be a tiring (but exciting!) week!

Thanks for the update. Sounds good. Maybe I can do the rook quest now finally, never got past the 2nd blocks :P

  • Good job on the locked items, that was soooo needed! =)

  • Hey, thats a great idea with the locked items and all. And wonderful to see how you are working "behind the scenes" on all the real issues, that bother here and there. We´re working in the other end spreading the kind glitch culture among newcomers, before those "hmmm, its all just like facebook games" ideas come popping up ... ;)

  • Why not just make an extra inventory space or a confirmation when you want to drop something? This seems really unnecessary and people are still going to complain if their stuff gets taken after 30 seconds or they move.
Posted 15 months ago by Laika Subscriber! | Permalink
  • From interviews I've read with stoot it seems detrimental to the goals of the game fostering interesting interactions. Do you also intend to disallow people to poison trees that belong to others or take herbs and vegetables that they didn't plant in community gardens?
Posted 15 months ago by Laika Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The lock thing is awesome. I am always dropping my focusing orb. Nice to know I won't just lose it. :) +1 on the lock.

Big -1 on the bag view thing tho. Rather it go back the way it was. But it's liveable.

  • Nice new changes-I was always sad I couldn't just give my bear a little hug once in a while. Thank you for this!

  • Laika, I get the impression that you're one of the people that profits from other peoples mistakes (dropping items). You were one of the worst about griefing me in chat the night that we had the discussion about things being dropped.

There's a difference in tree poisoning and working together in a community setting with gardening and someone accidentally dropping a valuable item only to have it snatched up by someone with a low moral standard.

  • I love being able to hug myself! That made my day, along with the most awesome sugarQb adding the cowboy hat I've been hoping for.  Thank you very much :D

  • Thank you! When I was new I thought hugging the bear was an obvious missing feature. Not any more!
Posted 15 months ago by Cherio Subscriber! | Permalink
  • My question is, is the direction this game going one in which players are completely unable to do anything that detrimentally affects other players in any way? Is it just supposed to be a care beat love fest and everyone always wins everything? The interactions among players will be incredibly boring and/or irrelevant. If lord bacon decided to run off with the money from the lottery he is running would the developers force him to give it all back or can all these things be enforced among a community.

  • Locked items at feet!   excellent!

How much can I drop?   A whole bag?
Posted 15 months ago by Treesa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I often find that when I'm mining and filling the last slot I have, I'll get a gem and the gem will be at my feet.   Its really annoying if I'm on an earthshaker and I have to stop and figure out how to make an empty spot to hide it in before anyone sees it and grabs it.   Not that anyone has, but when I drop a diamond or something it creates some anxiety and interrupts the effect of the earthshaker.
Posted 15 months ago by Treesa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • And maybe now I'll use the emotional bear more.  I prefer to use sparkly powder at present but its much less expensive to use the emotional bear to thank other players
Posted 15 months ago by Treesa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Thanks for the item lock!  My bags filled fast last night as I was harvesting trees, and before I could free up space, the trees gave me food that fell to the ground and was promptly stolen.  Not fun.

I think if the only way someone can have relevant or fun interactions is to harass or steal from others, the community really doesn't benefit from having them here.  If this makes them stomp off to go bother people in real life, yay!
Posted 15 months ago by noqualia Subscriber! | Permalink
  • My question though is about the philosophy of the game. Are glitchizens not intended to be allowed to do ANYTHING that detrimentally affects another person? If so that devalues the meaningful choices that we can make and makes the game far less interesting.
Posted 15 months ago by Laika Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I figure, if there are people who want to be detrimental to others, they can play warcraft.  :>
Posted 15 months ago by Tibbi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • What about things that are detrimental to others even though you're not stealing or doing anything bad, just not joining in with the group? I got totally raged at yesterday for not joining in the way everyone else was mining in Ajaya Bliss - the first comment not even being an explanation but an "I'm going to punch your face" (I was told this was a joke) - and know some people were really annoyed with me. In the end I felt I had to do it in a way that was worse for me, so that it was better for them. Short answer, I know, is not to go back there if I don't like it, and I won't, but is that kind of crowd control a perfectly reasonable way of ensuring the greatest good for the greatest number, or bullying? Felt like the latter to me at the time, though I expect I could be said to have brought it on myself by arguing rather than just backing down, shutting up but continuing to do it my way (as a couple of others did) or leaving.

  • @Laika :  there has been a lot of discussion about what constitutes a "detriment" to another player, and from what I have seen, the devs give a very wide latitude to that.  Aside from things like hate speech, stalking/harassment etc, there are not a lot of rules.   If you walk away and unlock the item at your feet, it's fair game, for example.

On the other hand, there also aren't any kind of doable "damage" actions programmed into the game, while there are a lot of cooperative and friendly actions, so that might tell you where the focus is.

Before launch there was always a massive party at the end of each test.  Try to imagine a street completed flooded with food and drink, musicblocks, spinach, purple flowers...people would bring anything and everything to share.  Some players saw this as an opportunity to grab what they could carry and leave and there was a lot of discussion about whether this constituted crappy behavior or not.  The jury is still out on that actually, but that is a good thing--the choices are meaningful.

  • ps - I don't disagree with working things out to be friendly and mutually beneficial by the way - one of the things I've enjoyed about Glitch. Probably I should have joined in the way people wanted me to. But what I was really shocked by was how people reacted to me when I didn't!

  • super extra +1s to Anthropomorphize & item locks

  • "Are glitchizens not intended to be allowed to do ANYTHING that detrimentally affects another person? "

The game doesn't seem to be set up to encourage that.   It seems more focused on "win win".

If you do want to play a game like that you can start a group and maybe think up some ways that group members can screw each other over, so to speak.  Use your imagination.

People set up groups for enhancing the gains from co operation so maybe there is a way to set up a group for more competitive play?
Posted 15 months ago by Treesa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Maybe you can have a group hall where you play a game of dropping stuff NOT at your feet but where other people can grab them if they are fast enough?
