Parcel Frog

I think the parcel frog is cute, but...... for some reason I don't think it really fits. I think the frog idea is good but am always stuck with the thought the design doesn't really mesh with the overall design of the game. Maybe I am not saying this right? Does anyone else feel the same?

  • Not here - stylistically appropriate in my view.

  • I don't mind it but I do know what Gruff means...it does feel a bit...well I don't even know what the problem is. Maybe it's because next to nekkid piggies and free butterflies, this one employed, clothed animal seems more like a mascot from a cereal box?

  • I personally hate it. I think it's ugly. Also, with the lag and flash crashes this test I didn't also need to wait minutes to get my auction purchase. That's another thing-is it an auction or a purchase? In a purchase there is a set price and you buy which is what I thought I was doing. In an auction you bid with others and the highest bidder wins the auction. So decide devs-auction the item off with multiple bidders and then deliver it (without the dumb frogs) or just let us buy the item and be done with it. Sorry if this seems harsh but this is my opinion.

  • I think it is cute. And love the yoga poses. If the devs let it say more and let it do more poses...then it will be refreshing/surprising everytime you see it. When busy with projects, I had to wait too long to get the items and then the goal was already finished. But..normally speaking: love it. I think more animals will enter the game. Some for everybody to use (like the frog) and some for personal use (the pets)...but I think it fits great. And cupcake...I will check his butt or back next time, because I could not see the approval seal lol :-)

  • Personally I find the frogs a tiny joy. I get the "disconnect" from the world. Piggies and butterflies don't wear clothes and and talk to us.

    But the lizards do. And they have jobs. We just don't deal with them very often. So I think the disconnect might feel less as other aspects of the world get flesh out.

    I also think the delay is perfect. It is slight and DOES feel more connected to the feel of the world... stuff magically appears in our backpacks made the game feel very mechanical to me. (I would love to see some in game rational for why we can purchase from a auction from anywhere in the world... but I would also like to see real estate handled more n game).

    I DO agree with the naming. It is not an auction. It's a marketplace. More Amazon where anyone can post than Ebay. But a full auction is a bit silly with the current level of items. There are very few unique/rare items that people fight over. Almost everything bought is bought because it is needed now and someone doesn't want to go searching for it in the game world. Everything would just pay the "Purchase Now" price.

    But that could change if other classes of items are introduced.

  • The delay is great and the frog is remarkably cute and fun and magical - very Glitchlike!

    I especially love finding him hanging out on some outlier street in-between his deliveries.

    The auctions, do, however, need too add to the confirmation dialogue something like, "you've purchased blahdeblah, the delivery frog will be there as soon as their schedule permits!" because it may not be obvious to anyone using the auctions that this will happen.

    Also, the tools seem to think that you've already got the item. So, if I buy 80 cabbage on auction for some recipe, I'm seeing the cabbage show up in the tool menu for the recipe as soon as I hit buy, but I cannot actually make the recipe until the frog shows up.

    But really, the frog is a *good* change to game mechanics.  It adds more strategy, especially regarding projects or energy management.

    If frogs screwing up people's project participation is an issue, I suggest that the mechanics around projects ought to be the focus (and the subject of some other post I'll write).

    BTW, the frog is already discussed here (with tons o support):

  • I feel like it doesn't really mess stylistically. I can't really put my finger on why, but I'm not sure they can even fix it considering most areas are done stylistically different anyway, lol. Unless they  had a unique design for the frog for every area...

    I would like to see some way of indicating that you have purchased something but it has yet to arrive. Most of that is me just something forgetting to new process in the moment but it is confusing.

  • LBo: actually, the Your Auctions page (can't link it as it is not a generic link, which is weird) shows you your most recent auctions.  In fact, in-game, when you buy on auction, that page will show the frog in front of your most recent purchase along with a timer as to when the frog will get to you.

    That was a surprise find for me, so I think it could be surfaced better (like, the confirmation page could be the Your Auctions page along with a link to browse last type of item purchased rather than just spit you back on the main page).

    === confirmation page ====
     ~~~ Congrats , you just bought X, it will arrive in n minutes ~~~
    Go back to browsing [last type of auction browsed]?
    Other recent purchases:
    [frog icon] 300 grain will arrive in n minutes
    20 mushrooms - delivered
    etc
  • Zeeberk, that's great and I had not investigated the auction history very closely. I would still like something in game for when I am attempting to make something.
    For example, I want to make Awesome Stew but need Cabbages. So I buy some on auction. As it is now, when I go to the recipe it tells me I can make Awesome Stew (and tells me the max amount I can make) but when I click "make", the status that tells me is the black boxes on the far left of the screen... which are often obscured by the recipe window. So I end up clicking four times thinking "Ack! What's going on?" And then I remember "Bacon-o, you're an idiot. You bought those on auction and need to wait for them to arrive."
    As I set it is mostly a getting used to the new system but I would like the warning that I have purchased those items but are just waiting for them to appear in the work window some how. Or some indication. For clarity. (Also not a big deal at all.)
  • The style of the frog, in terms of artwork, is different from the style of the other animals.  Pigs, for example, are more two-dimensional and cartoon-like than frogs, which have more detail and shading, and look as if they were created by a different artist.  I do find the effect a bit jarring, but the frogs are so cute on their own that I don't really mind it.  I do mind the lag, and while I know that people enjoy having the frogs following them around, I think they should probably disappear after a while.  They could automatically deposit items into your bags, or put them into your inbox if you don't have room in your inventory.
    Add the MeherMan seal of approval also.
  • one reason the frog conflicts with the style is how it flies around.
    it is almost always in the foreground no matter what obstacles it is flying through, so it never seems like a proper part of the level.
    like if you see one in Ilemenskie caverns it's there buzzing around flying through platforms and such.
    i like the idea of the frogs, their job and their personality, but the artwork and flight path make them seem "tacked on".
  • I find the frog to be absurdly wonderful and sylistically adorable. I delight in not accepting the delivery right away so as to get some quality time kicking it with the little dude, and I love seeing what little pose he pulls for me.
    the delay doesn't bother me at all, in fact I find it to be perfectly sensible. narratively, it would be nice if the frog visited you to pick up a parcel as well, or if you had to visit a mail kiosk to drop off your item to send to the central auction dispatch, but I've said it before, I'll say it again, I am a huge sucker for that kind of narrative icing on the delicious cake that is glitch. yum.
    oh also, the idea to put in a notification that your courier will be with you in X minutes is perfect.
