Trading and Pre-auction group

As stated in the title, (and due to the negative response of having 2 adverts in the public forums :( and my lack of experience in the game) I think that a group such as this would benefit many players. This is not final but if you would like to participate in such a project, tell me on this thread. Thank you

  • It's a good idea, I'd be happy to join a trading and pre-auction group :)
I really hope that when the game's up and running we can have a sales forum. On most other sites I frequent (or have frequented in the past), I've spent a lot of my time on exchange, sales, advertising or shop forums.

  • same with me! would you like to start it or should I?
Posted 18 months ago by Djoe6897 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Please, you start it, I'm not very good at leading things lol
Just please send me an invite, as I'm at max groups and won't be able to join otherwise :)

  • Djoe, I think the game does need something that will allow people to request items they need so someone else can collect them and then sell them back to the one person that requested it (rather than placing it on auction where the quickest draw at the keyboard wins). There's no way to do this with the auctions right now, so you can quite often go there and not find what you want, or end up trying to sell things that no one is interested in. There is no quick and easy way to gauge demand. A group like this would certainly help, although you would have to think carefully about how you want to set it up, and what the goals of the group should be. There may also need to be guidelines for doing business to lower the risk of someone getting ripped off (like mailing a product to someone then never receiving payment for it, or vice versa).

So, I say go for it: set up the group, after you've decided how it should be structured. Should it be like the want-ads, where people post what they have/want, and then go forth and contact each other and do business privately (through direct trade or whatever else they decide upon)? Or should it demand the use of the auctions to prevent people from stealing from one-another (but accepting the risk that the requested item will end up being bought by a different person)? Or maybe it should be even more structured than that, with a middle man (i.e., you and maybe other trusted volunteers) that will handle the transfer of said property and payment? It could get messy, so these things should be thought out ahead of time.

Edited to add: an alternative would be to make many options available, each one in a different thread. For instance, you can have a "trade" thread where people could trade Music Block whatever the heck for Music Block whatever the heck 2, or Street Trophy Piece blah-blah, for Street trophy Piece blah-blah 2. Another thread could be a "request" thread where people would put in requests for items they want and anyone who has it (or is willing to find it) could respond. Then another thread could be a "for sale" thread, where people post things they want to sell (although this might be too close to the existing auctions).

Edited again to add: Oh, and you could have an "auction advertisement" thread where someone is about to put something that usually isn't for sale on auction and just wants to alert people that it's up there.... The ideas just keep flowing, LOL.... but seriously, you start the group :).

  • Wow thanks shepherdmoon, thanks for the 450+ word response! As long as this doesn't exist, this will probably go up quick :)

  • A group or service where people put the items that they need and then someone comes up with the item and an offer? That sounds cool. I'll probably be more of a "consumer" than a "producer" though, lol.

  • What I would say is to maybe test it first, I have played a game where we got cheated out of experience and that wasn't pretty.... So of course I'll spend some time actually thinking this up.

  • Send me an invite too please. I'm willing to see how it will work. I like the idea from another thread that suggested certain streets could become trading centers.

  • LOL, Djoe--I hope you didn't count all those words! Yeah, I can get a little long-winded when I get excited about something :).

  • I for one have always been curious as to why the auctions aren't actually run auction-style.. this group looks useful, especially if people can simply request items in the live group chat or something.

  • sorry lord Bacon-o, I think the best thing is to leave the invitation up. otherwise it seems as if you haven't been invited by another person
Posted 18 months ago by Djoe6897 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • You don't need to invite anyone from the looks of it - I could join without needing one as it's not  set as private.
Posted 18 months ago by sgjo Subscriber! | Permalink
  • understood sgjo, but my idea was that if noone heard about the group, then they wouldn't join. I have tried to keep the invitations to a minimum thohugh but every time i add friends, I add invites.

  • And I didn't want to start a new public thread
Posted 18 months ago by Djoe6897 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Djoe6897, I have ONLY been invited by you and I have been now invited 5 times. It is not my job to leave up the invite so that you know you have already invited me. If you had consideration, knowing the current limitations of the systems here, you would be polite enough to keep track of who you invited. OR at least who had kindly requested to not me invited.

    5 times. Not cool.

  • Agreed, Lord Bacon-o. Djoe, please, please quit spamming. Everyone has heard of the group by now I think. Thanks.

  • For those who are interested in built-in ways to stop invite spamming:

    a) do not respond yes or no to the invite.  Just leave it pending.
    b) block the person spamming you.
Posted 18 months ago by WindBorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Option a) is fine... except that I hate that I have to live with the notice "light" forever because someone else isn't being considerate.
I tried option b) and it didn't seem to work.
Posted 18 months ago by Lord Bacon-o Subscriber! | Permalink
  • uh oh.  Lord Bacon-o, I'd report that as a bug.
Posted 18 months ago by WindBorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The whole 'leave it pending' is as silly here as it is on flickr, since No doesn't really mean No, it means, not right now.  Blocking your well meaning friends who don't know you've declined the invite or your clueless friends who aren't tracking in a spreadsheet who they've already invited but who have declined already is also silly.

So, either give us a third option:
    [Yes] [No] [Never]

    or remove the No option:
    [Yes]

The former means you get to choose between No, I don't want to do this right now but maybe if more friends invited me and No, I never want one from this group while the latter means you can either say Yes or just have the thing sit there as pending forever, never getting another invite but always being able to join the group at a later time if you so wish.

And - heading off a problem that got solved already at flickr - enable admins to rescind an invite already sent.

    [edited for clarity]

  • +1 zeeberk, especially that first paragraph. Djoe is well-meaning; I don't want to block him. And I hate having those pending things (I have 7 right now because some folks I don't know want to be friends, and I'd like to meet up with them in the game or at least in the forums first, but oh, it drives me bananas). Actually, I wish there was a "later" button or a "hide" button. Then you could go back at your leisure and peruse your hidden requests....

  • Invite me please, I'm in need of some stuff. :)
Posted 18 months ago by Feylin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Djoe, stop spamming me with invites.  Like Bacon said, it is your responsibility to keep track of who has been invited already.

Your behavior on the forums and in the game has not impressed me (and it's not hard to impress me).  I rejected your friend request, and I've rejected your group invites, and in a few minutes, I'll figure out how to block someone, too.
