Specialized Storage in new houses - Farming silos, mining silos, refrigerators

One of the things that drives me crazy about this game is the awkward management of basic resources that we keep in our houses. I made another thread about giving us more options to stack items more efficiently for storage/use but I realized its the storage that bothers me the most. Besides killing my game with lag, crazy backyards are just a sign that we don't have storage options that accurately reflect how we normally play the game. I think most players throw the resources they use the most on the ground because they know how cumbersome the bag system is for frequently acquired and used items. It just doesn't work.

I don't think Tiny Speck should accommodate every outrageous hoarder, but it seems like it should be simpler to store reasonable amounts of items that we consistently use or hold on to.

Since I like to make my own powders I like to keep 500 or so of each rock on hand, is there any reason why I can't deposit this small amount into a mining silo, rather than using 4 random bags or keeping it in weird piles in my backyard? Shouldn't a cook be able to deposit 250 of each vegetable type in farming silo, or place milk and cheese in a fridge?

I think it would be nice if they were deposited into a giant mega-stack so we could keep track of totals, and then let us pull it back out 50 or 80 at a time. But if this is not possible I would still like it even if they ended up as reskinned storage closets.

Imagine if instead of grabbing tomatoes from "Vegetables 2," olive oil from "Sauces and Oils," and looking around for the blue bag marked "Dairy" to grab some butter, you just withdrew what you needed from the silo, cupboard and fridge. A lot simpler.

Perhaps we could use imagination plus expansion items to increase the max stack size or the number of slots available. For example a mining silo that moves from a maximum of 250 per rock type to 500, 750, then ending at 1000.

I'm used to the inventory system as it is, but if you think about it enough, it doesn't really make sense that in a game with hundreds of different items that the best we have been offered is 5 colors of bags that we can drop in random locations. The confusion it creates could become an issue for new players or people who do not play many video games, becoming a barrier for prolonged enjoyment of the game.

Hopefully they have already been working on this, but I still wanted to throw it out there.

  • I wanted to emphasize that I think these special storage slots should be for basic resources or basic derivatives, not finished products. So the fridge would let you deposit 5 stacks worth of milk, eggs, butter, and cheese, but not be a place for holding on to 100 of each type of dish. Basically they would exist as organized stashes of everything a well rounded Glitch player would need to create something in the game, not places to obsessively store items in ever larger quantities.

However if this whole deposit/withdrawal system isn't possible, and the best we can get is reskinned storage closets, I hope they can create lots of different storage types that can serve as visual reminders for where items have been stored. A few ideas:

    Farming Silo
    Mining Silo
    Tool Shed
    Bog-themed Shed
    Fridge
    Mini Fridge (for beverages)
    Deep Freezer (for meat)
    Pantry
Revolving Spice Rack (that sits on counter)
    Multiple closet types

In short, I hope there is liberal use of multiple storage spaces in the next houses. I never understood how in the past storage size was tied to housing cost, as storage spaces are just there to keep us organized so that we can enjoy ourselves and not drive ourselves crazy dealing with our inventories and crazy bag and clutter-filled backyards. They should not be seen as luxuries with a high cost of imagination, they are necessities for allowing us to enjoy the game.

  • Really nice !
Another ideea could be a slot-less silo/closet, that would display a list of items with a number next to them (or something like the vendor screens, but with number of items in storage instead of price)
In any way, such a dedicated storage should be linked to the cooking/crafting screens, so that you could (for example) cook your 100 Awesome Stews without having to transfer 2000 Beans from storage to inventory.

  • YES! I like it.
Better storage options would mean I wouldn't need a big house (i.e. large cluttered floorspace) and could be more creative designing the space for fun.

And, I could invite people over, which I really would like to do.

  • Yeah... I don't have house guests because of the multiple hundreds of thousands of currants worth of items on my floor... xD Yes I have a problem, go away. Anyway, yes, some sort of larger storage within houses would be awesome, in the way that was just described. Linked inventory to a 'fridge' kind of item would be about fifteen different kinds of awesome. I'm all for that as well.

  • Love the ideas and I definitely want to have a kitchen complete with fridge and pantry! I hope the new housing changes will include a lock down of items within our homes. It would be so nice to be able to allow others to see what we have created without worrying about items being removed.

  • + about a million !!
these storage issues have been raised and suggested before _ but I am ALL for continuing to raise them regularly to let Ts know that the storage problems affect many , many players.

Once again , I'd like to say that fixing the storage issue would greatly enhance my enjoymnet of the game on multiple fronts ( like other posters here) - including but not limited to : reducing my sorting and moving and bagging time would give me ALOT more time to be OUT in the world interacting with UR and my Glitchen friends (rather than alone, inside my home , getting a headache from frustration at having to re-sort my inventory for the millionth time) , shorter house loading times, the freedom to allow house guests over because I;ve been able to clean my yard and floor so my home is pretty again and that I no longer have to worry that my belongings might follow a visitor home.
And PLEASE , PLEASE make it so that all the storage containers default to "locked" , and that the lock is controlled by the home owner . AND that "locked' means that containers are
    TWO things :
1 ) locked into position in the house or yard (ie cant be picked up ) and
also 2) locked closed (ie cant be opened adn looked into by anyone other than the home owner- like how a trophy case is locked ) .
I don't see why this would be too hard- as the mechanic could work similar to wrapping and un-wrapping present boxes.
SO , I would love the option to un-lock containers individually and would wish to leave one
un-locked container in my home for my key-holder friends to rummage through if they come by and have a need of something that I have extra of.
But I would want the default to be locked (both ways) so that if i ran out of the house to the mailbox -that the container i just closed as i ran out the door- would automatically be locked unless i took the extra step to intentionally leave it un-locked for access by others (so a key holder or guest could open it up and retrieve items).

  • I'd like to see a basement with either multiple storage cabinets, a fridge or freezer, some grain, meat and veggie silos/bins, etc. that could be locked even if the rest of the house weren't. Who cares if my basement is stacked wall to wall with stuff someone could take? It would be locked to everyone but me! My visitors wouldn't be think I was a hoarder (or, at the very least, have any proof) and I wouldn't be worried people were walking out with items :)

  • I want silos for every dairy product.  That means Milk, Butter, Cheese,  Stinky Cheese,  Very Stinky Cheese,  Very Very Stinky Cheese and even for the useless objects.  Seperate silos for each, all in a row.

I need to hoard a lot of everything.  Yep.
