Let's show some manners in the Herb Gardens, shall we?

With the elevated emphasis placed on herb growing due to the new tincturing skill, some people are being downright awful to others in the few public herb gardens- to the degree of stealing your herbs that you are actively tending right in front of you and leaving the plot a mess only to dash off to do it somewhere else! This happened to me several times in the last hour or so alone.
At the very least, re-plant what you take, and if someone is "standing guard" and tending, just ASK what's what.

  • Just goes to show - when money's in play, it's every glitch for himself. Sure, if herbs were still 80¢ a pop, I'm sure people would have some courtesy. The prospect of a huge profit for zero outlay makes this sort of behaviour seem more permissible, perhaps even expected - the higher the profit, the more irrelevant are moral absolutes.

  • Please keep in mind that those with bad lag cannot tell if someone is standing guard or not. All they see is a little mesh figure. There is no set norm with the herb gardens. I, for one, ask people to not replant so that I can plant and work on that badge.

If you suspect someone has a different playstyle than yourself, try saying your intentions in the local chat BEFORE they have a chance to act. Most Glitchen will respect the wishes of someone who says, "Please, I've been standing here for hours waiting, please don't steal these herbs." It can clear up a lot of misunderstandings beforehand.

  • This is why I have a second account that does all the herb stuff. It sucks we have to make a choice between nice looking crop garden houses or disgusting, poop looking herb garden houses.

The community gardens are just too much of a hassle to deal with. And to my credit, even though I steal herbs and crops from community gardens I tend to stop by and give away the seeds I get to whoever is standing around. Pay it Forward and all.

  • @LGE - you do realise it might be nice to ask if someone wants to harvest a patch if they've been waiting around for their herbs to mature - you know, instead of harvesting them from under their nose... just saying

  • Let's not mince words...
that's not pay-forward Eli. Pay forward means doing good deeds with the primary intention of promoting the concept and ideal of altruistic giving, and possibly (through some sort of "karmic" phenomena) potentially receiving like consideration from "the world" in the future, not helping one's self to the efforts of others because one has given something to someone at some time in the past or possibly will do so in the future.

To your credit? With all due respect, if you own a firebog home and herb garden, you probably shouldn't be taking anything you didn't plant and tend yourself from community garden anyway, regardless of whether you replant or not, since you have the luxury of having spaces all to yourself already and most who use them do not.

  • @Krokodil DundeeI don't take if someone is camping the plot. That's just rude. I only take when there is no one around. All's fair in love and Glitch.

@Woochi I harvest the herbs that are unattended, shuck them, then give the seeds to someone at another community herb garden or just on the street (usually low level players). Or I harvest unattended crops and feed them to the 14+ piggies in the pens. How does that benefit me?

  • As I said before Eli now coyote, Let's not mince words, that's not pay-forward. That's simply opportunistic greed in sheep's clothing. And why I bothered to post in the first place.

and I quote: "Pay it Forward and all." followed by the reality of "All's fair in love and Glitch."

  • I think that if you own a home with an herb garden near a community garden, you should take advantage of both, and those who live near one should have more "authority/rank" at the gardens. Though, I only am just starting herb gardening. Just respect and be respected!:)

  • I think that if you own a home with an herb garden near a community garden, you should take advantage of both, and those who live near one should have more "authority/rank" at the gardens.   Mr. Eh

I'm sure you didn't mean to say that.  Right?  You really meant to say that those who own a home with an herb garden and live near a community garden should NOT use the Community Garden, and should leave it for those Glitches who do not otherwise have access to herb growing plots.

Cause otherwise,  you sound quite greedy and selfish, and don't seem to have any understanding of what "community" means.  You really meant to convey how you believe every Glitch who doesn't have a home, or Glitches that have a home but don't have herb garden plots should have more "authority/rank" at the gardens.

You really wouldn't want to permanently record in the Glitch forums how self-centered and mean you are.

  • Everybody can access the gardens. This should not be so hard to understand.

And by the way, EVERYBODY can set up an alternate account for a house with herb plots. There are lots of houses available.

EVERYBODY HAS THE SAME RIGHTS. It doesn't matter where you live, which goal you are after, how much you planted or how long you have been waiting.Replanting after harvesting would be really nice.
I planted way over 100 seeds and herbs only today. But nobody is forcing me to do so and I get no special rights or anything for it and that is good that way.
But I also harvested ONE guanoed herb today, because I saw the person standing there harvest a lot and replanting none. I got bullied for 10 minutes. I did that only one time before without asking and with a good reason - same thing.

Asking is nice but on the other side there is no way to know who planted there unless you witnessed it. So often people pretend they guanoed the whole field, happened often to me and the fields i put guano on. ;-)

So, maybe some people should stop putting guano on 30 seedlings and declare all of them their own. Guano just 1, 2 or 3 and almost all people will respect that. Planting in community places bares a risk, deal with it. And some other people should start replanting after harvesting. Too much empty plots will slow all of us down.

And we all should be a little nicer to each other. If somebody was faster taking a crop, herb, key or whatever, ignore it and wish for more luck and better reflexes next time. Same rights, remember? Same goes for trees and everything else outside your own houses.

  • I hate to say it, but this has been happeneing for a long time, before the big recent changes. I have all three herb gardens as my teleport points. I bring a ton of seeds and guano with me, and i set up shop in one section. I guano everything that is there in ONE SECTION {not the whole garden, and not where someone is already camping} harvest, replant, reguano, cycle cycle for as long as i can stand it, then i plant one last time before i go. I never leave a plot empty, and although i mostly work with purples when i'm mid cycle, i often will end by planting better herbs when i leave. I don't feel entitled, I know everyone had the same badges to work on as me, but it is rude upon rude to walk up and take from someone camping. I once made the mistake of going to the bathroom, and my whole section was replanted when i got back. There are people who come up, see me camping, and stand there waiting for my herbs to pop - sometimes they are honestly just there to water, other times they are there to "kill-steal" as this would be the only term i feel applies here. Sometimes, when i say something they say sorry and stop. Most of the time i get rude comments, or people just ignore me, and yes sometimes i say "don't be a jerk" when someone is on their third herb after i've asked them to stop. If they start to plant in the spots, i do admit i get angry. I am really hoping the house changes mean we get both crop and herb plots, but by then i might be done these badges and {so long as we don't have a reset} i won't ever have to deal with it again.

  • Everyone wants to be rich. Few will succeed. Whether you share or snarf, contribute or horde, makes little difference in becoming rich. It relies on luck, connections, wit, determination and a good bit of fairy dust, (and maybe a bit of sociopathy.) Meanwhile we've all got to live within a community and community good will is worth a lot, especially in a game that is designed to promote sharing and helping.

I think greed could destroy Glitch as it has been envisioned by Tiny Speck. To keep true to their vision amidst a greed-driven playstyle means spending more time on safeguards and restrictions; less time on stuff that's cool. I've seen it before; devs so afraid to change anything because of rampant griefing, exploiting and abuse.

An attitude of me-first is counter-productive to a community's well being. A simple rule of thumb is to ask yourself, "What would it be like if everybody did what I'm about to do?"

  • Oh dear!  I think that the ratio of reasonable folks:assholes in Glitch reflects the proportion in real life.  I live across the street from a public park- it has a playground, basketball court and baseball diamond as well as some young trees.  It's covered in garbage, broken glass, graffiti, etc. and people routinely break the basketball hoop.  It's sad, but I can't go out to the park and tell people what to do without getting told off (or stabbed).  The only person we can EVER control is ourselves.  Act as you wish, be kind to others if that's your thing, but you cannot police kindness and respect from others.

I'm sorry that the community gardens are now like Walmart on Black Friday.  This will settle back down in a few days, I hope, once everyone's made some potions and the market has settled.

  • While I plant many herb seeds in the gardens waiting for the herbs never pays off. People take the herbs I plant, replace nothing and leave. If I take a herb I would replace it. I find it only fair. I think the rules should be changed to the public gardens, if you plant it you should be able to harvest it, or get a warning that it is ready.
Posted 12 months ago by Deus Marionette Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I wish that there was a way that whenever the herb was harvested, it went directly into the planter's inventory no matter where in the world he or she was located.  If he or she was offline, maybe it would be delivered by the frog at the next log-in.  That way, people that do have good intentions and just want to free up plot space to plant their own can do so without guilt, and people who have intentions to just collect herbs for their own personal use will no longer be able to grief others.
Posted 12 months ago by Sparklebooty Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think there would need to be more to it than just auto-harvest to the planter's bags. I plant seeds in community gardens for others to use. Haven't done so lately, mind you, but I think it's a critical option. If we go the route of making it possible for herbs/crops to be locked to the person that planted, then let's at least have a menu option that lets us plant things 'for me' or 'for everyone' to keep that community spirit alive.

  • It seems to me that there is a division between the players that believe in always keeping the garden stocked-- as in no empty plots ever, and those that believe in keeping the garden free-to-use.

The people in the first group find the following system acceptable:
Player A plants the seeds.  Player B fertilizes and harvests the seeds while Player A is doing something else with his life but sees no harm done so long as he plants another seed in its place, which may or may not be the same type of seed.  Player C strolls by and harvests this new seed.  Player A comes back and gets nothing.

The people in the second group see this scenario instead as their ideal:
Player A shows up to a clean empty plot.  Player A plants a seed, fertilizes it, and passes the time chatting about the weather with other gardeners in the map.  Player A harvests his herb, hoes the patch, and then goes off on his merry way.  Player B shows up to a clean empty plot.  The cycle repeats.

I am very much in that secondary group of folks for the current state of the community garden system.  If the suggestion I made earlier about the herbs being delivered to the original planer were to occur, then both the players who don't want to have to worry about their herbs making it back into their inventories win and the players who see empty plots as a waste of time would also win.  There would always be seeds, and a lot of the "crime" and arguments would recede.
Posted 12 months ago by Sparklebooty Subscriber! | Permalink
  • There are good and bad gardeners, as in life! The only thing that would ensure fairness of play is if when seeds were planted that particular plot 'locked' itself to the seed planter. That way the seeds would mature and be harvested back to the original planter.
Posted 12 months ago by Moz Art Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I frequently plant seeds in the public gardens and leave them for someone else to harvest.

It would totally stop me from doing this if everything I planted automatically came back to my inventory.  You could never again do a good deed in the public gardens.

And, one person would then be able to monopolize a garden.  All they have to do is plant up the garden, so that no one else could plant anything.  The first person could leave all the seeds unfertilized and come back at their leisure to wait for the crops to be harvested, since only they would know when that would happen.  As soon as the crops went into their inventory, they could plant up the garden again.
Posted 12 months ago by WindBorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • There is always the possibility of coming in to a matured plot, harvesting, and replanting to wait for another maturity for as many cycles as wished. The trouble is, unless you stand by your plots, you can NOT rely on someone else assuming that they are actively being tended. This is compounded by growing in more than one plot group. I (and most) feel that if it is unattended, it is up for grabs as it IS, after all, then community property. Some will even hervest herbs you're tending and argue about whether you planted/tended them. To counter this, I have begun dropping notes such as: "These are currently being tended by (name), please leave alone!" at the plots and STAYing there until I am finished. This seems to work. Some think (or claim) that anything in public gardens is open for taking whether replanted or not. I can sum up thusly: We all have the right to USE the gardens, but don't have the right to TAKE from others. The HERBS being tended may be claimed by the grower, but the PLOTS may not. We do have to share.

  • I for one take deep satisfaction that Glitch actually has some story to it now.  I wish it hadn't gotten to the level of actionable offenses elsewhere (not to bring that up again), for sure.  But I love that there's some actual story coming out of Glitch - in some ways it vindicates the sandbox nature of the game.  Making an end run around that conflict - between planting and picking - would be the biggest nerf of them all.

  • In a real community garden setup, the plots are fenced and you get access during the period that it is rented to you.

  • WalruZ, I see the logic there, but the arbitrary randomness of the unexpected circumstance when factoring in human nature is one of the appealling (to me, anyway) attrbutes of the game. I'm not convinced rigidity as opposed to cooperation is the best direction to lean toward. Then again, we are talking about human nature.

  • I've played maybe a total of 2 hours in the past 6 weeks. I haven't gone in-world in a few days, but last time I was there, I was sitting on a TON of herb seeds. Why? Because the people who sit in the herb gardens are insane. So many times, I've planted a seed, only to have some person come through and harvest it, telling me about arbitrary rules they've made up for that herb garden. I've tried using logic, "It's public.", "I planted that seed." or "I will plant more." and they are completely unreasonable. I can see this new change hasn't helped at all, so I'll keep on hoarding seeds and avoid going into Crazy Town.

  • @Windborn - you are right! With all the debate at the moment I quite forgot that players can display aspects of altruism if desired and of course 'locking' plots would take away the sentiment. And... I guess that players could be equally bloody minded as well. In the end we are back to players treating each other with respect or not as the case may be.

  • I have not been to a garden in a long time, but after  getting my new skill I decided to plant some of my hoarded seeds. There were quite a few glitches "guarding" their seeds and a couple gardens ready to be plucked with no one around. I plucked some of the herbs that were ready and replanted then I went to camp out in my own little area to plant and "guard" the other crops I needed. We were all there for a while and everyone was very friendly.
And then, out of nowhere, (several times) a random glitch would come racing through and "steal" the herbs that were ready without so much as clearing the patch let alone planting a seed or fertilizing as the rest of were. Was it anoying? Ya, kinda. Was it funny at times? Ya, kinda. Especially when the glitch looked like he was running for his life.
What I really enjoyed was the generosity of my fellow "campers". When chatting, if someone mentioned their crop was taken ect...poof.....one ( or more) was sent to them.  Lots of trades and gifting all around. I personally, had a nice time there, and made a couple new friends.
Several people asked me, as well as others, if they could have a seed or a crop. Of course you can! Not that anyone has to ask for a public resource, but it certainly appreciated by the glitchen who have put their time and currents into it. Just saying.  :)

  • I'm sure some bad behavior is by casual players who think that herbs just plant themselves, but there are a few players are repeat offenders  who are specifically trying to take advantage of other people. The good thing is that they're not immune to social pressure. How do I know this? Well, last night I planted and fertilised an empty bed. Someone walked up just as the plants were ready and hung around. He didn't respond to public or private messages, but he grabbed the plants as soon as they were ready. When I complained he started justifying his behavior. You can see his arguments above.

Anyway, I went and dropped notes around his house and the herb garden. They said what he had been done, and called on him to give the herbs back. I don't recommend doing this, by the way - he complained to the devs and they asked me not to do it again. But it does show that social pressure works. In the meantime, if you see someone surfing the herb gardens you should probably avoid planting.

    1. much worse than taking (stealing?¿really?) some herbs
    2. counter to the so-called community spirit we see harped on about so much (you call this a community?) • I think that an organised plan to deprive people of their efforts is stealing. We're not talking about a clueless player, or even someone who took a few for their own use. This is a major operation by a sophisticated high-level player who has been defending his actions in this forum for days.

These raids aren't just a loss for the individual player; he's depriving everyone using the community gardens. Nobody wants to lose the fertiliser that it takes to grow plants quickly but unfertilised plants take what, up to nine hours to grow? The herb gardens will either be full of slow-growing unfertilised herbs or worse, they'll be empty except for the occasional herb planted by a do-gooder.

As for whether it worked ... well, it shows that it *can* work, because apparently he really, really disliked being called to account. I know the devs spoke to him, too, although I don't know what advice they gave him. I hope he modifies his behavior.
Posted 12 months ago by Tanga Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Tanga I think the main point was that your actions can be seen as harassment to some. If you go to the community gardens your always going to run the risk of people taking what you planted, but there's better ways of dealing with it.
Posted 12 months ago by Vinchon Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Whatever you think, taking retribution into your own hands is clearly against the TOS.

The only appropriate  action is to outline the behavior that you believe is "stealing" in a report to staff.  Then go about your business, because vigilantes are not welcome and can find themselves in a worse situation than the "thief".

No matter how virtuous you feel about your side of the story, you are simply harassing another player.
