Was i really in the wrong?

so i recently started playing glitch when the open beta started and have fallen into an addiction like most other players but i am in the military stationed overseas and have limited amounts of time to play.

i woke up this morning before work a little earlier than usual and thought it was a perfect time to get my glitch on for a little while and i decided to check out the Teal-White key spawn locations.

i proceeded to Keywot whot and there were two individuals there waiting for it to spawn so i joined them and about 30 seconds later it spawns and i managed to grab it, before moving on i decided to inform them it had just been obtained so they wouldnt waste their time and then i took off to try to quickly accomplish some other things.

one of these individuals proceeded to gripe me out and say i stole it from them that they were there first. i explained i did not agree that i had stolen it and that i was not out of line to grab it. they go off on a tangant and even though i disagree i return and give them the key (they continue to badmouth me regardless) then go about my way.

about 10 mins later im at gomen grap waiting for a key to hopefully spawn agian before i have to take off to work and a different individual who i found out was a friend of the first shows up and preceeds to lecture me on how i was wrong and to quote: "when you figure out that you were wrong - then you might turn into a true glitch"

so i ask, was i wrong?

  • Woah crazy thread... imo you weren't wrong - but the others to show their nasty side when you got it before them definitely weren't showing the Glitch friendly spirit of this game!

With that said...my advice to all - and I know many follow this already - is if you grab a key and you can see other people are waiting also, is to OFFER to let them follow you into the place the key grants! Easy peasy and everyone's happy.. (unless they are only there to grab and sell the key).

  • I have experienced the same thing, but without even touching the key. There were two glitches who i guess formed a line, i agreed. Then while waiting, they proceeded to badger me, "splank" my glitch repeatedly and were just being mean i didn't pay much attention to them, but they were still very rude. Luckly for me, they got to sick of talking trash and waiting for me to leave, they themselves left before the key spawned and I got the prize. But still rude and uncalled for reguardless, so i understand and have experienced what you are saying man.

  • I don't think you were wrong, but if I pick up a key, I don't announce it unless I'm willing to be followed. I don't give away items I picked even if someone complaints.

  • It isn't wrong or even nasty or bad in any way. Same chance and same right for everyone everytime. You choose to camp - know the risk and get over it if somebody else is faster.Sometimes i want to paint "grow up and deal with it" on my forehead. How about t-shirts you can write on? ;-)

  • My opinion: definitely not wrong. My view is that if the key spawns and they don't see or take it right away, they're not paying attention and it's their loss. Sometimes if I'm waiting with someone for a while, I'll ask them if they want to sell or use the key (or look up on the auction whether that person currently has any keys for sale), and I'm willing to take turns if they want to use it. But for all I know, the people waiting there before me could just want to sell it on auction, and I can't wait the whole day until it's "my turn". If they didn't want you to take the key, they should have let you know when you showed up, rather than just expecting everyone to automatically know they're really excited about getting a key because it's their first time or whatever.

Also, the fact that you gave it back when they asked for it (in what doesn't sound like a polite way) makes you a "real glitch" in my opinion.

  • OP, you were not wrong. Good for you for getting the key.  I would also like to thank you for serving in the military, and all you do.  *hugs*

For those that dont know.....the key for Kristel Kaos spawns in Ajiboo Hood.

    It spawns very regularly.

  • This key might need to be adjusted to spawn a bit more frequently as people need to get it twice to get into both locations it opens an loads of people seem to want to either loot it to sell on the AH for near 2,000currants or to use it to lag those rooms out.

I have to give thanks to Nathan who let me 'follow' him to get in tonight without wasting time farming or buying at silly money. Cheers Nathan :)

Have to say I'd be a bit miffed if I'd waited like a good glitch for 11.5 minutes only for someone to swoop in and nab the key, but agree there's no formal rules against that. Still think it's a bit nasty though...

At least that's how Ajaya works, I've never been to the other places.

  • I don't think you were overly right or overly wrong. I think if someone needs a key, they need to be very patient or buy them at auction. Also, most of the time, if one really wants into AB or Neva-squared, they wait by the door and someone with a key will usually offer to let them follow. It'd be a big deal if no one did that, but people do - so it isn't.

Maybe better communication on your part might have helped, and maybe them taking it less seriously would have helped too. It's only Glitch.

  • To be honest, I don't think you were "wrong" only because Glitch has repeatedly stated that there is no one way to play the game, and so your actions are not punishable.  HOWEVER,  I think you were quite rude.  The community of Glitch is held together by friendliness and caring for other Glitches.  I won't go so far as to say that every Glitch behaves this way, but there is a strong core of Glitches that work to make the community nicer, and it stands out from other MMORPGs because of that.  You were really not working in the spirit of that community, which is what I think the friend of the other person was trying to say.

I have noticed that a lot of the replies here have taken the attitude of, "You weren't wrong, because f*** campers!"  However, there is no proof (and you did not even state) that the people waiting were campers, trying to sell the key on auction.  Perhaps they were just people like you, who also didn't have a lot of time, but decided to log in for half an hour and see if they couldn't get that key.  Imagine yourself in their shoes.  You don't have a lot of time, you don't have a key, but later this evening you reaaaally want to go to xyz place, so you go to a key spawn and spend your precious time waiting for a spawn.  At the last minute, someone pops in, grabs what you've spent all your time waiting for, says, "Hey, I took the key so don't waste your time," and runs away.  How would you feel?  Perhaps, you would feel angry and annoyed.
Personally, when I go to a key spawn, I ask if there is an order, and if there is, I wait my turn.  If they all decided to "jump" on the key, then that's cool too. However, if there is a line, and you jump it, why would you be surprised that people are angry?  Bottom line, you were rude.

(As an aside, I don't think the person who harassed you was right, nor was it right to get their friend involved, however, that doesn't make your actions any less rude.)

  • +1 to Kross.

Those were my exact thoughts. Very rude to say the least. I have never camped for a key, I buy them at auction. As easy as currants are to make why didn't you just buy one if you wanted it so bad?  Yes I know the campers could have done the same but they were there first.

  • I don't think you're wrong at all. Keys are up for grabs. I don't understand the need to take turns or talk it out. You were waiting for it just like they were. You just happened to be faster. They were EVEN MORE in the wrong to come after you later and be a huge jerk about it. You gave them the key.. what else did they want? Play glitch police?

I went to go find a key so I could finish a badge. There's already a girl there. A few mins into it she goes. "Please don't steal the key from me." I'm thinking, how is this already your key? How would getting it first be STEALING from you? I didn't say anything. Because I knew if I did it'd be snippy and rude. She went AFK so I took it and finished my badge.

  • not all key campers are greedy. i was waiting for a key spawn the other day, and a fellow glitchen came along and managed to snag it before i did. i took a quick look at the auctions, and sure enough, that glitchen had keys for sale. i started to head away, and the glitchen asked if i was waiting for the key. i mentioned i was trying for the completionist badge, and the glitchen handed me the key. i wish i remembered his name, because he was definitely the friendly kind of key camper :)

  • On a social level, you were wrong imo.  Someone was at the spot, spending their play time waiting (at this point, you don't know if this is their first key or 100th).  If someone chooses to stand there for 12 minutes and you decide to pop in in the last 30 seconds and take it, that is pretty inconsiderate.  Now after the key is taken by that player, if they refuse to offer others a chance, then they are in the wrong.

While campers can be annoying, it is a viable play style for limited items.  The real issue with campers is not that they are willing to spend all day in one spot, it's that some of them won't take turns when others want a chance.

I find the replies interesting, since most people are taught to take turns and share in real life, yet when on-line, they take the law of the jungle approach to social situations.

Giving the key back was the right thing to do even though they were jerks about it afterwards.

  • Anything on the ground is fair game. There are protections in place that prevent actual item theft. Campers can't claim the key belonged to them if they never had it in the first place. I have a negative opinion of campers because (regardless of whether they are using a solo or alt account) they are depleting the game of free resources while not contributing anything new. Newbie or currant-less glitches who need certain keys cannot obtain them because the people who don't need them are hoarding them. My position is that if you want to make fast money you should invest that camping time exercising a skill or doing a quest, and if you genuinely want a key and it isn't there, come back later. If I see you camping, and I have a plank handy, I make that position well-known.

    Also:
I fully support Xupa's key crafting idea and Magic Panda's random location spawning idea.

  • The problem with the "this was wrong" mentality is that this is an "unwritten" rule of courtesy and one somebody might not know they were breaking.

Anybody here ever see someone go for a Currant or Energy coin and snipe it from them? Is this bad? I mean, the other person was going for it? Or does the act of waiting a long time for something call dibs on that something? How long is the minimum time to qualify for this?

In my mind you choose to camp for something out of greed or just because you need it. With that, is the possibility somebody might beat you to it. If you realize this going in, your feelings might not be hurt. Want a guaranteed key? Get it at auction.

  • Its interesting, I had, what turned into an argument about the exact opposite of this today, someone claiming that 'camping' at the keys was dickish behaviour.

Apparently everyone camping at the keys is there purely because of greed cos they want to sell them for extortionate prices on the auction. I got really quite upset.

So there's positions that its wrong to stay at the keys, and wrong to not stay at the keys.

  • Unfortunately a few screw it up for the majority...
How do you know those people are actually waiting for the key or are camping out for it to sell it for big money...
I agree with someone here who wrote keys shouldnt be auctionable or be able to be traded for money or any such thing...Once you get a key there should be a certain time before you can get em again..Maybe 42 game days like the pig problem created as a solution. However you want to believe this is a community game it really isnt...Lots of nice folks who help each other out but as long as the rules allow it other people will do whatever they can to get ahead...So I blame the developers for these problems..There are very simple programmable solutions to these situations..Whether you find it morally right or wrong it doesnt matter..The rules currently are that if its on the ground its free to pick up..Doesnt matter if you where waiting for it to use for its intent or you waited to sell it...So since those are the current rules the gamer didnt do anything wrong and should not have given the key to the 2 individuals...Nor should the 2 individuals harrased the gamer. They should be warned to not harrass people for follwing the current rules.Too many people are creating their own rules and expecting everyone to follow them..If you dont like those rules then let the creators know of what you think and want but in the meantime dont complain about someone violating your made up rules..Easiest solution is to not allow popular keys to re-spawn. Make people earn the keys! You want a key to x then send them on a quest (A changeable quest so people dont know the answers by heart)..So I want x key I go to x place and ask to go on a quest for that key...Im given a random quest to try (Not something super easy..Got to work for it!!) I get it and off I go..If I succeed the magic rock gives me the key..If I fail I can try again in a few game days.. Course the keys would be non auctionable and couldnt be exchanged for money or goods but could be gifted to someone which youd tell the magic rock to gift to or tell the rock to randomize it and some random gamer gets it..Do that and people wont be getting upset with each other cause gamer A thinks gamer B stole his key...If you want a cooperative game you need to set the rules to allow that and not rules where gamers are fighting over a key..Sorry about the formatting but no matter what I did it kept running all together and no allowing me to set it to make it more readable..

  • +1 Djabriil. Keys are up for grabs for everyone. They only spawn once every 12 minutes which is quite frequent, and people can just buy them off the auction too. Missing the key is not a big deal. Especially since it's custom to let other people follow you in.

I don't keycamp. I hop over there, if someone else is there I leave them alone, if not I check and see if it's been taken or not. Sometimes it isn't, free key!

Glitch is a great community and I can't see why people would whine and scream over such tiny things. You were not in the wrong, it's the other people's fault for making such a big deal.

  • This is a game design issue, not a moral one. If a game is set up with resources that spawn in fixed in-game spots that can be camped, there will be arguments about it.  It's a pity the Glitch designers weren't smart enough to learn from the mistakes of other MMOs.  They need to make keys more frequent random drops and/or unsellable like SWF blocks.

Personally, I refuse to get involved in the AB key garbage. I refuse to buy from campers, and I refuse to go to a resource node that is almost certain to lead to conflict if another player is there.

  • You were wrong in the fact that you noticed there was a line and proceeded to cut in front of the other two?  Would you do that in real life?  The others were in the wrong for the amount of admonishment.  It is a community based game.  There should be a certain level of decorum.  The fact that you could be playing a man/woman/boy/girl of any age should temper some people to be civil.  The fact that you're in the armed forces doesn't come in to the equation.  Everyone that plays could be from every walk of life.  You saw people waiting and were selfish.  They went too far with belly aching.

The older players I have found are more polite and courteous.   The younger players go by the rule 'dog eat dog."    Anything goes.   It is ok to pick up stuff on the ground...    Maybe a  new player is   organizing his bags and didn't realize the new players find anything fair game.    I quit trying to get the key for Neva Neva.    I was an Alpha player.    I play far less now...   There is too much rudeness.  It is sad and this posts shows that some feel it is quite fair to jump in and grab.   If there are players there ahead of you  it is obvious they have been waiting..To me there is no justification for grabbing. We all have time limits...   Common decency is waning in this world of the    Me Generation.  Give me back the Good Old Days.

  • The prices for the Tri-T/W key are crazy, and I am always fearful that people will insult me for waiting around for a single spawn--or worse just waltz up and hork the key before I can get it.  It's the fact that I have to feel this way about a SINGLE SPAWNING ITEM that really upsets me.  The only place I care to try to catch the spawn is in Nandak Intention, mostly because it is on the way and often empty.

What I do not get is when people see little dots on the minimap waiting down there and feel the need to hop on down to see if the key is up.  Generally, I see people there and assume they are waiting for it themselves and have been there first and thus get precedence.  It is because people will just hop down to see that makes me worry the key will spawn and someone will just snatch it.

Another thing I cannot confirm to have witnessed is campers down there, people who are waiting for the key to pop up and quickly and quietly snag.

However, as far as your am-I-in-the-wrong queston...hm.  I see you have assured us you had good reason in taking the key, and if something like that happened to me I would honestly ask the person if they were going to Neva/Ajaya and then if they have any intent on using the key.  If, in your case you would have told me "no, I have limited play time" I would have been fine with your acquisition of the key, as I have far more time to play than you do.

Explaining personal situations can often turn a misunderstanding into a resolved conflict.

When I am waiting for a key, I plan on using it.  The other day I was in Nandak when literally no one came through for two key spawns, so I took a spare to keep in case I do not have to time to wait for a spawn.  Often times when I will want to enter Ajaya are very early/late (to put myself in for when I wake up) so there isn't always a huge concern for campers/people.  I am cautious about saying this as I don't want to encourage people to camp out here all hours of the morning snagging dozens of keys and then hording them never to be used.

I just hope that if/when you do get a key...you lead others in who do not have one, something that is greatly appreciated, what with the campers and high key prices.  The prices are inane themselves, as you make far more from mining in the time it takes to spawn a full stack of keys than you would had you camped out for the keys and auctioned them.

I think all this makes sense.  It *is* 5:30 AM and I have been writing papers all morning, so I'm sorry for any rambling.  Movie reviewing makes me loopy.

  • If a person is noticeably active (chatting, crafting, etc.), I'll check auctions and see if they're a key seller. If they have current auctions up (like, in the last 30 minutes) I'll ask to cut in. If a person is waiting for immediate use to Neva/Bliss, I'll ask to catch a ride and go mine the surrounding nodes while they wait. That way, we both benefit.   It's all about generating good will.

  • Wrong?   Not necessarily, but as mentioned before, it's a bit on the rude side (IMHO).  Though I seem to be in the minority in that I also think it's also rude to grab items that fall to the ground because someone's inventory is full.

In both cases, if the person walks away, or isn't paying attention...  the items/keys are fair game, but otherwise, I think it's only fair to give the person a chance to move stuff around, or to notice that the key has actually spawned....

There is one Glitch who hangs out in Gori Blear who regularly steals keys right out from under people while others are waiting.  I've never seen them selling any of the keys on Auction, so I'm not sure what he does with so many keys, but his method of acquiring them leaves a lot to be desired in my book...

I'm kind of surprised that so many folks here seem to think that keyjacking is totally ok....  Glitch being such a friendly community and all...

  • I see it this way...

Your fave celebrity is in a hotel room several feet above where you are waiting in line to get your ticket to their show/movie/book signing/concert/charity performance or other event.

Every 12 minutes or so "Celebrity" leans out his/her window and drops an invitation to the after show party where s/he will personally shake your hand and sign the ticket you bought.

How many of you are going to give one of those invitations to the person ahead of you in the line if one finds it's way into your hands?

TS is not selling the keys so there is no line. TS is tossing them out of the window at regular intervals.

Edited to clarify - I am no camper and have never snaffled keys because I am usually too slow. I have tried to get keys only a couple of times but was usually beaten to them which was horribly frustrating but it made the times when I managed to get one a little bit special.

Most of the time I got a key because those who were already there allowed me to or gave me one though. lol.

  • If I went to a key spawning location and there were other people there and I still wanted the key I'd just get in a line and wait my turn.  Have we learned nothing from the crocs at Bureaucratic Hall? :p
I'd say you were  *wrong* to grab the key.   Or to put it another way grabbing the key was an aggressive move so you shouldn't be surprised if you got an angry response.

I also don't think its *wrong* to collect keys you aren't going to use.  They are going to spawn anyway, so I check the spots and if there is a key I'll pick it up and put it on auction at the going rate.
I  don't think there is really an issue of "right and wrong" in the key grabbing activity.   Polite and aggressive maybe.   I can respect people choosing to play aggressively so long as they understand they won't always get a meek response from the people they are competing with.  Playing aggressively and then whining in the forum about a hostile reaction...well, that's not cool.

If anything is "wrong" about the situation its maybe just the way the devs have set it up.  I think that if there is more than one person waiting on a key they all should get one if they grab at the same time.  Same system as barnacle scraping, harvesting - everyone wins.  Might even encourage some friendly chat among the campers.

  • I think it was nice of you to give back the key. It was kind of rude to swipe the key, but you offered to make it right. It was more rude of them to keep sniping at you.

That being said, I'm in the "communication" camp. I won't compete with campers unless I'm intending to head straight to AB; most people will be cool with following me in. If someone is camping there to sell, however, I have no problem taking the key. I'm using the key for its intended purpose, and I believe that has precedence. Besides, a seller could sit there all day and take EVERY key; I'm only there for one.

  • There is no in game ruleset for key acquisition.  Anyone trying to enforce rules or whatever is fooling themselves.  Like any spawn in any game its up for grabs unless the devs come up with another way to do it.

Right now any system or entitlement you think you have to a spawn is misplaced and unenforceable. Are there other ways to design it? Yes.  Are they in place? No.

Anything we agree to has no bearing on someone who wasn't in the conversation.  You cannot make someone follow your rules.  We should all know this from real life.

  • In order to promote helpfulness and community the programing rules need to be in place...You can get in line all you want but chances are youll have an almost impossible time getting the key you need...Auctioning them off is also wrong as the keys are spawning to be used...If the rules allow selfishness then even though im not selfish(I routinely leave things about...Just give stuff to people..etc..)Im going to act selfish so I dont get  people who have a second account siting there waiting for the key and they go to their second account when they know the key will be spawning..You may get in line but it doesnt mean others will and its perfectly okay to be selfish cause of the rules and those who are after auctioning for money...One thing I like about glitch is that it tends to make people cooperate, help each other..That leaves a good feeling inside...But when you see people not caring and being selfish you begin to not care and realize you will have to be selfish to get through some of these quests and such...The rules need to be changed so selfish behavior isnt possible! Make them work to get the keys though more quests..besides going on a quest to get a key is more rewarding and more fun than fighting to get a spawning key. Its sad when people give in to these"my rules are the rules" bullies!
