Optional filter in global?

Not philosophical discussion needed about what you view filtering as, ITS OPTIONAL!

Please could we get this implemented for those of us who find certain words offensive?

Also maybe make it customisable so that we can add whatever pops up that's not covered. I.E Manually changeable by each user.

Just to clarify, this is a thread about R.E.S.P.E.C.T above anything else, not just saying "Oh well I think its fine to swear so I will..." considering others regardless of how 'idiotic' their views may be...

  • Peope are still on about this?  Seriously, words are words.  Bear's response didn't prove anything other than some people have enormous hangups about words, which interestingly enough, I can admit to having myself, yet, I would never want censorship of a word merely because of emotional connection.  What they are talking about is intent anyway, which people can be blocked for.  A filter is just a waste of the dev's time, especially when people have noted browsers have add-ons for filters.

As a side-note, bear, I do understand that people have different experiences and viewpoints.  I simply don't care about those people who try to enforce minority views.  I am all for protection of any minority in the world, but promotion of said minority is completely different.  In case it is not obvious, I am using minority in it's literal sense, rather than talking about races.

  • Wait, giving ronin his burrito kills global? Aww... WAIT! We don't need a filter, we need MOAR BURRITOS. Then ronin's happy, the toaster-censors are happy, and group chat use soars.

  • ++ Good post Saucelah.  I agree 100%.

If the devs are going to spend time working on the chat feature, I would rather they spend the time solving this problem in a broader and more universally applicable way - such as dumping "Global chat" in favor of a number of smaller chat spaces, organized by interest or topic or whatnot.  One of them could be a PG-13 chat where offensive language is not allowed.

And in fact, this capability is possible within the current game structure, through the use of the group chats.  Anyone is free to create and advertise a "Global chat PG-13 style" group and thus have their own safe-space chat.

(But honestly, when all's said and done, I would rather the devs work on the housing update and the addition of BEEEEEES.)

  • Browser filters probably wouldn't filter in this game though,  And I don't think it'd be a devs waste of time.  The whole point is to make the game enjoyable for people, so people will want to come back to the game.  If its just people spewing filth in global, a day or twos convo comes to mind, there will be less people wanting to come back, which will hurt their income.  Yes I'd like them to work on new content as well, but I'd gladly wait for it if they were working on a filter.

Like someone said before, sometimes its not the person you wanna block, just some of what they're saying.  Just because this is an adult game, doesn't mean it should be free to speak about anything and everything that a person wants to.

  • PAscale, I did not get that impression from the article, but then, it did not exactly examine stoot's use of engineer closely.  But my point still stands, even if all 41 worked the code that's not a particularly large number when you look at the development team of other live online games.

  •  A PG-13 chat?  You do realize this game is for 14yrs+, right?

Thank you Volkov. Yes, read that thread. This is a dead horse that is being beaten here.

  • I never block people, I just bleep over what someone is saying if it's annoying me, and I don't understand how seeing someone talk rubbish, swear etc can have such an impact on your  own personal gameplay.  It exposes them as idiots, but I just don't read or close it up for a bit.  I don't think TS should put any time into a filter, I also think it sort of goes against the spirit of glitch, in that I feel we're all here together, warts and all so-to-speak.
Posted 12 months ago by Midi Reifsnider Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Innie - yes, clearly.  But it seems that some of the 14+ year olds here would like to have a PG13 chat space set aside for them.  While personally I don't care about the words people choose to use in an online chat, I might enjoy having a chat room for discussing what sort of books we're all reading.  If, rather than focusing in on developing a feature that is really only desired by a small group of Glitches (naughty word filtering), the devs were developing something with broader application (specialized "global" type chats), I think that would be a better use of time.

But again, my vote is for BEEEEEES before all else.  :)

  • Ok so this thread got some attention I see.

Personally I don't see words having an effect on me, unless im trying to get to sleep and people are ffin and blinding outside my house THEN it affects me, but overall I still would prefer not to see those kinds of words than to see them, and shows people up to lack self control of any kind if they feel a need to self express through means that aggravate others.

As mentioned before this is about respect and if that was ingrained into everyone then there would be no need for this thread; as it is...

I think a filter would be beneficial for in game chats and of course as has been mentioned many times OPTIONAL! I doubt it would take a week to program a filter by the way especially not one which we add our own words too. - Yes I have coded a filter before...

  • The tools to create a PG-13 global chat space lie at your Glitchertips- an open group with its own chat room with specific guidelines outlined by the group's creator.

Devs are all: "Here's Glitch, a game where you get to create the community YOU want!"
Players are all: "Devs!  Make me a community tailored to my needs!"

It's our game, it's OUR job to make it enjoyable, fair, slightly wicked, etc.

Can we please stop asking Mommy and Daddy to clean up our messes for us?
Posted 12 months ago by Sloppy Ketchup Subscriber! | Permalink
  • That was very patronizing sloppy and you clearly haven't read the points discussed above at all...

Everyone is stuck because some people want to discuss 18+ topics in Global, others don't, just because you don't doesn't mean you should be forced to leave that area.

Were asking for an OPTIONAL filter that will take a short amount of coding, and will be useful for those who don't feel the need to use 'Free speech' as an excuse to be disrespectful to others.

  • NYTICIAN - Please see the link I posted. It's a filter add-on for Firefox browser.

End of your problem - install it and use it to filter out whatever you want.
Posted 12 months ago by Tsu Dho Nimh Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm not trying to be patronizing, I'm trying to ask people to be responsible for themselves.  I've read every post in this topic twice.  I'll say it again: be your own filter.  Ask global participants to stop speaking in ways that you don't like, block players or leave the room and find a chat you find preferable.
Posted 12 months ago by Sloppy Ketchup Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Devs said repeatedly during the first beta that Global Chat would be shut down completely at some point.

That will totally solve the problem.  You will be able to run your own private chat with whatever rules you want.  If you'd like that option right now, take it.

For those of you who want full-frontal Global, there's a group for that, too.  Search Global 2.0

  • I've done all three countless times.

Why should I be forced to leave the room because people can't show respect. I shouldn't.

Asking people to stop does not work, it aggravates them for the most part and they continue, worse than before.

A filter wouldn't take much man power to make, and the 'you fix it' attitude doesn't work.

Finally Tsu, I don't use firefox and don't want to be forced too and im pretty certain that wont work with the flash application that Glitch is, only the forums.
Posted 12 months ago by Nytician Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The point is that the devs have given you all the tools you need to create exactly the experience you want.

I routinely turn off Global when it gets too boring or irritating.  If I want chat with certain people removed, I go to the group where my friends hang out and chat there.  We have the ability to block people from chatting if we find them obnoxious.
Posted 12 months ago by WindBorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • That does make sense WindBorn.

Although my arguement still stands im just going to let this rest, if Tiny Speck bother to act then so be it if not fair enough.

I think its sad that we should have to take more extreme measures just to show 'respect' to those who use free speech as a guise for showing disrespect.

    Ahh well.

  • **A filter wouldn't take much man power to make**

This has been said a couple times, and as someone who does a little bit of coding herself, I wanted to point out that unless you work for TS and are familiar with the code behind Glitch, you really have no way of knowing if this is true or not.  Even if the time it takes to write a generic filtering program is minimal, there's no way to know how much time would be required to implement and troubleshoot the code within the Glitch code structure.  I would suspect that there is quite a lot of coding behind the Glitch environment, so any unforeseen consequence of implementing new code could take a long time to track down.

It's the same with any coding task in a complex environment - maybe it all works on the first try, and hooray, you spent 3 hours writing the code and it works!  But maybe you put it in and it breaks 14 other things and you have to go fix all those things, except when you fix them, something else breaks and then you have to fix that too.  Even simple changes can turn into hundreds of hours worth of programming time.

  • I understand that Zoethor but even for the biggest game out there a filtering system is not the biggest thing, and this thread is asking for chat filtering not the names of animals and the like.

Either way its fine, everyone's voice has more or less been heard, lets see if the devs act on it.
Posted 12 months ago by Nytician Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Nytician, the devs have not acted on previous requests.  For instance, about 6 months ago the exact same request was made.  Nothing happened.

You might enjoy the game more if you figured out how to enjoy it without a chat filter on global chat.  Waiting to see what the devs do is likely to be a strategy that keeps you from playing.

  • This idea's been brought up before and, thus far, I haven't seen much done in the way of filtering. I've always thought the idea of people being able to choose what they do and do not see in chat (meaning, they could create their own filters much in the same way people do for e-mail) was always a cool idea. That way, everyone (except maybe the programmers) wins, haha.

  • I still move for people using a self filter.
    i.e thinking before you speak.
    But that's just me.
Not saying you have to be all lobotomized about it either.

I also believe people aren't so upset about the filter, as they are about being "censored".
    And vice versa.

Scared of the word, and not the meaning?
    -Rambles.-

  • The thing is, I think before I speak but a lot of what I say is apparently offensive (i.e. "swearing"), even though there really is no good reason to dislike those words aside from the fact that society just says they're bad, lol. And we all know that society is often wrong or too conservative...

Also, I've seen some well-respected players say some pretty stupid things, and I've seen some pretty stupid consensus' in-game, as well, that have been pretty offensive. Since most players would be okay with some of those things, it would also be helpful for me to have the option to not have to hear it. I'd very much like the option to have the word "fag" changed to "awesome person" in all of my own chat interactions, lol, without having to change the way others see their chats.

  • @Cerulean, except perhaps, the original poster of the phrase.   They should see "awesome person" too.

So install one and use it! That way you can use your very own customized filter on every website you visit instead of having to complain about insensitive louts. And you can have it NOW, today, and probably for free.

  • I do love this game. I deal enough with other games and filters. If we had a filter and someone said something VERY offensive and I discuss it with them the first thing they say, "Put on the filter if you don't like it". However in other games such as WoW, EQ2, etc, kids are allowed to play those games. The filters are there for the parents to put on for the kids. And because kids do play,  those game companies have to dot I's and cross T's legally.  Also, there are ramifications to using profanity in the other games, where there is some leniency on Glitch due to it being an adult game.

Do I think constant profanity is obnoxious? Sure. But an occasional dirty word does not bother me and there are just a few that make me cringe. but those are the nasty of the truly nasty and I have never seen them used.

Also what may be a dirty word to YOU is not considered a dirty word to me or someone else. I think is all depends on your upbringing. Ah damn and Oh shit to me is mild profanity but not enough to bring out the torches and pitchforks lol. I grew up with those words and never really thought of them being all that dirty.

Another case in point considering where you grew up. I am American but have lived in New Zealand now for nearly 11 years. When I first got here, I met my fiance's family. One of his nieces was about 2 years old at the time.  I said, "Oh she is a cute little bugger!" Everyone looked so shocked! Well bugger here in New Zealand, along with Great Britain, Australia, Ireland, etc. Bugger means buggery. Now if you don't know what buggery is go look it up! It is considered a very dirty word in these parts! Same for the word wanker. Don't call someone a wanker unless you want to fight lol!

  • Nytican, your own argument kinda hangs you.

First of all, there is no such thing as universally offensive or disrespectful, such words are subjective and simply your perception.  So why should the players in Global Chat be forced to conform to your vision of respect simply because you are choosing to be in the room despite finding their behavior disrespectful?

My next bit may come across as patronizing but is 100% true, so while I apologize in advance, I find it must be said.  I used to work with middle school and elementary school students.  I would often be presented with complaints from one child about the behaviors or words of other children, even though the behaviors or words the child was complaining about did not fall under "bullying" or any other disrespectful behaviors outlawed by the rules of the school.  There was nothing I could do in that scenario, and indeed, there was nothing I should do.  Instead, I found myself repeatedly falling back on the following advice: "You cannot control the behaviors of others.  You can only control yourself.  You can choose to remove yourself from the conversation, or you can choose to stay and continue to be upset.  These are your choices -- there are no other options."

You actually do have additional options: create your own private group or block the disrespectful players.  But otherwise, that advice stands here as well.

  • @Saucelah.

"So why should the players in Global Chat be forced to conform to your vision of respect simply because you are choosing to be in the room despite finding their behavior disrespectful?".

This can go vice versa as well.
Posted 12 months ago by Volkov Subscriber! | Permalink
  • But the people who are "disrespecting" the people who want a filter are not asking for any changes to be made.  They are not asking for devs to intervene.

They are not asking for special treatment above and beyond what is currently in place.  They are simply playing the game within the rules.

So, again, why should players (who are following the rules) be forced to conform to anyone's vision of respect simply because that other player refuses to use the currently available tools?

It doesn't go both ways.  People who are asking for the staff to divert their efforts from building out the game and instead build out a special filter just for a few people can expect to be told to use the tools they already have.
