Projects for All - Timala

www.flickr.com/photos/bribl...

Here is a collage of the action at Geeze Bets in Timala.  We built the new street, Sini Shake.

There has been some discussion about how Projects are only for advances players.  It is true that even the least skills at a Project may require tools and possibly some skill at using them.  New Glitches can also attend and enjoy though.  You can usually contribute something.  Even if you have no skills, tools, peat, fireflies, planks, etc., you may still enjoy watching the action.  Sometimes when I have nothing to contribute I like to watch the action and read the comments.

Every Project has several Phases.  If you cannot contribute to one of the Phases, you may be able to contribute to another.  If you can radiate with your Orb, you can get in the middle and radiate energy to help those who are working.  You may even have some ingredients that are needed to make certain foods and drinks or bricks and blocks.  You can donate these items to those with the skills and tools to use them.

Some of the best fun happens between Phases.  There are 19 minutes between each phase.  This is enough time to go and collect items you may need.  I also find it fun to stay and socialize.  During this time Races are often offered and it is a lot of fun to compete in them.  Frankly, I am terrible at racing.  I am slow and a very poor jumper but I still enjoy these very much!  I like racing so much that I purchased some race tickets and took them to Geeze Bets where I offered some races as did others there.

I find projects to have been some of the most fun in the game.  I start each session I play with a search for Projects.  If you are new to Glitch, don't be afraid to join in or observe and don't be afraid to ask how to get to a Project.  You should at least attend one of them and help build our new streets.

  • I agree. I do like doing them, even when all I can do to help is the work (which is most of the time) or sometimes offering some resources to others for making stuff. I rarely had the resources to contribute much in that sense (or if I do, I don't happen to have the right ones on me at the time and it's all contributed by the time I go get them).

  • Wow, I had no idea these things existed. Why don't new players get told about them, or at least see them in action?

  • I see me in there :D Hehe...

I love the projects. I can't always contribute, but I'll do what I can like help others with energy. It's a lot of fun! Thanks Brib for the post :)

  • I LOVE PROJECTS. I just never really know how to find them. Sometimes the map shows a "faded" street but the project hasn't been presented yet, lol. Then by the time I get back the street's already built! :P

  • Cerulean: To find new projects, ask in the New Streets chat. That's how I found out about the project in Firfire Frees at the very end of the playtest. The street-under-construction wasn't on the map yet, because the project hadn't started yet, but people on that chat were very helpful when I asked!

I spent a lot of this most recent playtest participating in projects. Even when all I could do was make food, play music for others, or run off to gather barnacles (next playtest I'll learn crystalmancywhatsis, I swear!), it felt great to be part of a community project. Once, all I could think to do was donate a piggy so everyone could have a nibble... when I got back via my teleportation script the next day, there were UNCOUNTABLE piggies in the area.

I learned about having lots of raw materials on me at all times, including barnacle talc and full firefly jars and mined rock. (I love collecting fireflies! It makes me absurdly happy. Almost as happy as humming to piglets.)

This playtest was also when I learned about the convention of giving material-donor players a crafted component to contribute to the project. What a great idea! That way even people who can't make blocks, crystals, etc. but can only contribute player-2-player can still be in the official contribution count.

  • @Vortexae: Thanks for the New Streets Group info! I'd never heard of this group.

Where can I find jars to catch fireflies? I saw jars for auction that already had the fireflies in them, but where do empty jars come from?

  • @Heyoheya  Empty firefly jars come from hardware vendors.

Tip for the New Streets group chat: if you're not hearing anything about a project, don't wait for someone to announce it; ask for information :)

  • There is a new project in Timala.  It was not finished today so be sure to go there next test.  Timala is located at the NE corner of Bartola.  You can take the sub to Malos Means and walk from there.  Just open the Map.  You can search for Sini Shake on the Map.  When you get there if you do not find a project just go to the next street.  There will be a project either in Sini Shake or nearby.

  • Thank you for the information! Are all projects about building streets? Once built, do you build houses, etc.? Is this the only way the community grows, or do the devs add areas too?

  • Heyoheya - you get your first firefly jar from the firefly whistle quest, which spawned for me on my first trip to Shimla Mirch. That quest gives you the ability to attract fireflies, so the jars are no use until you've completed it. But after that, you can buy them from Alchemical Vendors (pace Millie - I didn't see any at hardware vendors; Glitch Strategy Wiki says only alchemical).

Everyone was very kind and gave me back my jars after I donated fireflies, except for that first time when I didn't know to ask for the jar back and probably left the area before they could find me to return it.

+1 Millie re: asking, not waiting. Usually participants will broadcast a new phase and its requirements, but not always. Also, usually participants will leave a note on the ground beneath the Street Spirit listing the names of the phases, which the game won't give you when between phases. If you don't see a note, it's good courtesy to leave one! If you do see one, read it and leave it there! (I have not yet taken Penmanship 1, so I doubly appreciate others' kindness here!)

  • Oh you're probably right about Alchemical Vendors hawking the firefly jars. Thanks, Vortexae!

  • Widdershins: All the projects I've seen are about building streets and expanding new areas. You don't build the houses, but some streets appear to have housing districts that are also opened when you finish them.

  • Thanks for the answers about jars! I guess I never noticed them at the vendors, and someone stole my fireflies/jar at a project. (Grabbed them and left without contributing.) When I searched for jars on the wiki, I don't think it said where to buy them, but I bet the wiki has them listed under the right vendor, just not on the actual jars page. (I could be making the wiki stuff up in my head and confusing this all with a different wiki search!)

Anyway, thanks! I'm going to defs get more jars when the game opens next. :)
