Cabinets VS Display Boxes

I don't like how display boxes are superior to cabinets and shelves.  With a display box, you can pun in an infinite amount of one item and know exactly how many there are.  With cabinets, you can only put one bag's worth into one slot.  You can have infinite stacks on shelves or tables, but you don't know how much is there, and picking them all up is a pain.

Cabinet slots should work like display boxes.

Also there should be a "dump bags" feature that dumps everything from your bags into your appropriate storage boxes

  • I'm not sure if you're new or not because player profiles aren't working, but there's some history there.

To make a long story short, cabinets predate SDBs, when SDBs came out, I believe they told us cabinets were done.  People complained; cabinets came back.  So there are players that feel very strongly about having access to cabinets, where they can store bags filled with a few items here and there.    While I mostly agreed with your POV at the time, I'm actually glad there are cabinets now -- being able to put them anywhere and have many of them made them incredibly useful for organizing things like element bags.

TS's official word, IIRC, is that SDBs will never be able to be stored in cabinet slots.  And IIRC, that containers (like bags) will likely never be able to be stored in SDBs.  So they each have distinct roles.  There have been, however, a few suggestions over the last few months to create items that are, essentially, cabinets for SDBs.  I like to think of them as SDB Lazy Susans.   But they won't be all-purpose cabinets, just a way to maximize space and minimize loading for large collections of SDBs.

But that dump bags feature is a seriously good idea.

  • I would like it if bags and cabinet slots could be upgraded to store larger quantities of varied items.  I have never been much of a fan of SDBs but they are handy for storing large quantities.   The bags and cabinet spaces are much too small by comparison.   I don't need unlimited space, just more space for a variety of items in a bag or toolbox (or cubimal case).

  • -1  ...SDB 's store almost an infinite amount of the same item ,most often filled with the more common of items,  cabinets however do not, and are more often filled with the less common /  less frequent items. However Cabinets have to be opened if you want a specific bag, and if all spots are full you cant simply drop things in, you have to open it. Some ppl prefer one over the other, most seem to have a combination of both. Cabinets also allow us to put our bags away, and have bags labeled for general categories, say like " Herb Seeds", instead of having to have a slot that can only hold one type of seed. Both i think have their place here. I don't see how a dump bag feature could work, i think it would cause more harm than good because one would never know for sure what bag something would land in,  if the bag for that item was full in the cabinet.

  • I also wish cabinet slots would hold things more like SDB's. Or rather, they could hold either ____ amount of an item like an SDB or a singular bag, so that people could use it either way.

I wouldn't expect the slots to hold as much as an SDB, but it'd be nice if it'd hold say, like 100 of an item. Or 10 stacks or something. It'd make organization with cabinets nicer, especially for items you don't care to actually display, but don't want to have to switch out bags to get to all the time.

That is the main reason I use SDB's over cabinets. I'd rather use cabinets a little more and have more space for decor other than SDB's, but it's just not useful. I do use cabinets for certain kinds of bag storage, but I'd like to use them for just stacks of resources too (more than one stack or a full cabinet of one item).

  • We at Tinyspeck feel that sdbs and cabinets offer different and mutually compatible storage options for a variety of players and playing styles, and we plan to leave them as is for now.

"dump bags" sounds like a neat idea to me!

  • Thanks for jumping in, eric... any chance you could elaborate on that point a little?

From a gameplay standpoint, I honestly don't get what the difference would be between a 16-slot cabinet with SDB-style per-slot capacity and 16 SDBs. As a player, all I can see is that having that option would help me make my house look tidier.

It's not a huge deal... I promise you I am not furiously stomping my wee Glitchy feet in protest or anything... I just don't get the thinking on this one.

  • I'm just saying cabinets are inferior to SDBs.  SDBs are superior in every way except looks.  I'd much rather have a bunch of cabinets because they look better than a clutter of SDBs.  But because of storage capacity and the way SDBs simplify maintenance and moving stuff around, I feel like I have to have SDBs.  I initially had a bunch of shelves and cabinets until I realized SDBs were more efficient.

If you want to sell cabinet upgrades for credits, they need to be improved so that they are as viable as SDBs.

  • "cabinet upgrades for credits" aren't about functionality, they're about appearance.

If they want to sell cabinet upgrades for credits, they actually don't need to change a thing, since players are buying cabinet upgrades for credits.

I'm just saying that your statement that cabinets are inferior to SDBs is an opinion many players disagree with.  One I actually started out agreeing with but now feel exactly the opposite.  They are apples and oranges.  Different.

Just think of the challenges of storing bags in an SDB style thingy.  So first in last out like they already are (I believe), how many bags could you even store before it becomes impossible to get what you need?  I wouldn't go beyond four myself.  I can't really see anyone going beyond 16.  Certainly not 998.   And if you need that bag of herb seeds and it is the 1st bag in an SDB with 990 something other bags, you'd need to pull out 990 bags, no more than 16 at a time, until you find that one.

On the other hand, like I mentioned above, a new item, a sort of SDB carousel, is an idea that a few have put forward and I believe TS has said they are considering.  That would give you and me both the quicker SDB loading times and better organization we're hoping for, without taking cabinets away from players.

  • I'm not sure that anyone meant for bags to be able to stored in the way of a SDB. At least I didn't. That would be clunky.

I'd like cabinets to hold bags as they do now, one per slot; I just wish you could also put a little more of an item in one cabinet slot (bags are fine to me). Instead of one stack of stew, maybe 5 stacks of stew. I like organizing a little both ways.

  • For some things I like cabinets better because they put a smaller upper bound on my hoarding.  For raw materials, I like SDBs, but if I had an sdb for each kind of ingot, I'd feel I'd need to fill them to some comfortably large number and then maintain them there.  (That's just my playstyle and how I approach the world.)  Instead, I have bags in a cabinet with enough of each so that I can undertake almost any crafting project I need to on a whim, but no more than that.  When the bags are full, I stop stockpiling more.  It's the difference between feeling a need to keep 160 copper ingots on hand vs keeping 1000.

In other cases, I find it convenient to have bags designated for certain tasks, with items in them I need for that task.  When I'm doing something else, I store those bags together in a cabinet.

I also like to be able to tidy things away.  I try to limit the number of SDBs I have in the house for aesthetic reasons.  There are also a lot of things I don't want to have more than a few stacks of - various meals, bonus items, collectibles I don't want to display, and so on.  Why use an SDB when the purpose is really neither storage nor display?

I don't think one is superior to the other, so yes, +1 for different and mutually compatible storage devices.

One protip some newbies may not be aware of: if you have a partially complete stack of an item in a bag in a cabinet, you can drag more of that item over the cabinet and it will be added to the incomplete stack in the bag.  So if you put one of an item into 8 different slots in a bag, you could keep adding that item to the bag in the cupboard by dragging it over until all 8 slots were full.

  • If I were to guess at the reasoning, it's this: The non-aestically pleasing (to me) look of SDB's is the trade off for the amount of things they hold. I like the LOOK of cabinets much more than the look of SDB's, but if I want massive storage, I have to use SDB's. I am current converting tower floors over to "workshop space" that has SDBs, with the plan that my home will be a lot more streamlined with cabinets for holding things that need to be there (my cooking will still take place in my home).

So you give up the neatness of cabinets for the hoarding possibilities of SDBs.

  • SDBs and cabinets both hold stuff, but you cant shove a bag dedicated to mining or potion making into an SDB.

I just built my 4th or 5th large 32 slot cabinet; I tend to store lots of bags of things in them, and have a very large wall of SDBs for all the stuff I've stolen.

    Uh..borrowed.

  • So hey, we'll all be able to be happy if instead of asking for cabinets that do these things, we ask for a yet moar differenter item that provides this third option.

Vote for the SDB carousel in 2012!

  • I give up neatness for the convenience of being able to drag things out of the SDB's as I need without having to switch out bags for multi-ingredient items (ETA: supposing I need to keep around the quantity that a bag allows, but not so much as an SDB allows).

ETA 2: And giving up something for something else is fine. I just wish individual cabinet slots held a little more of a singular item. I can keep dreaming (of cabinets doing it or some other new nifty invention). :)

  • It's not that cabinets suck. It's just that they're different. I like having two storage options. I use cabinets for things I don't have many of, like fuel cells and those five laughing gases I accidentally made. I use them to store bags full of emblems, crop seeds and herbs seeds, which I don't need to carry with me all the time. I don't expect cabinets to act like SDBs and actually prefer that they don't.

Interesting feature of cabinets: Take a bag. Put one cherry in each of the sixteen slots. Place bag in cabinet. Now, drag stacks of cherries from your inventory to the closed cabinet. The cherries will be sorted into the slots in the bag inside the cabinet until the bag is full. Neat, huh? (Works for all stackable items.)

Some people's organizational styles work just fine with the cabinets so I don't think they're definitively "inferior".

  • Personally i use both. For things like basic resources and common used items, i use SDB's.  I have about 40 SDB's. as for Cabinets i have 7, they come in handy for a different reasons, I have one bag to hold building supplies, one bag to hold snails, fuelcells , and Fiber, one the hold Ingots, a bag for Herb Seeds, a bag for Crop Seeds, 2 bags for extra Telportation scripts, 2 bags for notes, 2 bags for fruit, one extra tool box, one extra spice rack...and so on. I have 2 Large cabinets, one only has small bags the other only has large bags, I have 3 wall cabinets with large bags, one only holds crops/ one only holds food i made/ and one only holds drinks. I have 2 medium cabinets, one i just use to drop bags off in while i get other bags, and the other holds Social items like RK, Charades, Game Tickets, and Zilloween Candy. I find both are valid types of storage for different reasons, i wouldnt want to store, 5,000 meat /Vapor/Plain Bubbles/ Allspice/ Olive oil/ Honey/ Butterfly Butter/ Cheese, etc.in a Cabinet. On the same note other things i want to limit to certain quantities, or, i don't need to have a huge stack, say Essences or Copper ingots. In most cases once  a bag is full then i have enough of that item for my own use and will sell or donate anything  beyond that. Everyones play styles differ, i don't really prefer SDB's over Cabinets or vice versa,  both are useful for different reasons and have properties unique to them, for me both have their place and uses here. If another type of storage is introduced thats fine, but i don't think that the functionality of SDB's or Cabinets should change they are both efficient ...just different from each other.
