Staff actually reading the idea forums?

Ok, so all of us basically just post great ideas we have all the time...and yet i never EVER see any of the updates have anything to do with what we post. Is it just me being unobservant or do the staff like never actually think about putting some of our ideas in motion?

  • I'm sure they're reading it.  Having been in a game development group, I can guess that  PM is collecting suggestions and they are brought up periodically for updates on both sides of the point. (as in 0.9, 1.1, 2.1, etc.)

  • I highly doubt the staff can implement ALL these ideas, most of which are 1. unfinished, 2. unbalanced, or 3. just plain bad. They have to carefully decide on which ideas are viable for the game, how to balance them so they don't create problems within the community, and finally implement them. Also, I'm sure their priority is on the things they have already decided to put in the game, and not wasting development time on how best to implement flying purple hippo mounts.

  • Let's see, just off the top of my head, here are things that started in the ideas forum:

    Keys to people's houses
More things to do with herbs
When you drop something at your feet, it can not be picked up by someone wandering by
    Mining bonuses
    Lots of fun outfits
    Zilloween goodies
    Stills
    Improved door knocking process
Reporting units of wear or use left in auctions

I am sure there are hundreds more.

Just because they do not implement YOUR idea does not mean they are not reading or do not care.

I am still waiting for sheep.

  • Here's a staff post from another site that explains why even great ideas don't always get implemented:  (ps, the Eric referred to in this post is the same Eric who helped start Glitch)

We get lots of good ideas in the ideas group. Most of them are ones that have been previously thought of by  staff and exist on our "Giant List Of Future Features". Some are completely new and make us wonder why we'd never thought of them before.

Many of the ideas on that list are years old. They're great ideas, but they're either more complicated to implement than our members might think, or they're relatively unimportant in the grand scheme of things, or their time just hasn't come.

Now, in terms of us replying to every post, or saying Yes or No, or giving updates: it helps to remember that this is a company with people at the top, and people at the bottom, and ideas and priorities coming in from all directions. If I read what I think is a good idea in the Ideas group, there's no point in me saying "Great idea! I'll do that tomorrow!" if my time has already been assigned to other projects. Better to submit the idea to The Big List and have the company project machine review it at the appropriate time.

If there was a free-for-all "Great idea! I'll do that tomorrow!" from Staff, it would lead to either our schedule going to pot, or a lot of promises being broken.

Which is why statements like Eric's "This would be a very nice feature, yes. We'll keep it in mind!" is as close to a commitment as you'll get.

He may think it's an awesome idea but until it's been run through the machine, he can't promise anything more than "we'll keep it in mind". Which we are doing. It's on the list.

  • Add "Moving Boxes" to the list of ideas proposed on the forums that appear to be part of the in-progress housing upgrades and changes.
