Kleptomaniacs

Why is there surprise about those who steal from our new streets? This game imitates real life. Just as in real life there are those who shoplift and steal from easy marks, in the game there are those who delight in taking collectors and feeders ... to them it is a game. Let us turn the other cheek and have pity for they "know not what they do..." Decency is not applicable to all.  and not all pigs are created equal (George Orwell said it best,

  • In RL people steal what they want or can't get for themselves.  We can pretty much get most things in this game easily so there is really no reason to steal from others except for laziness or meanness.  The rare items that you may be unable to get are usually not left out (dolls, pickle, etc.).  There is just no good reason to steal a meat collector or piggie feeder.- or even an animal stick.  If you can't get those for yourself you are a very poor player and maybe should try a different game.

I lost a piggie feeder, no big deal though, I just made another.  I would, however, rather not have to do that every day.

  • I think all these forum posts of late regarding this issue is fuelling those that ransack home streets to keep going.  They obviously do it for some sort of kick/rush and where we all keep posting about it is probably adding to their enjoyment and sense of thrill.

  • Of course they do..all those that defend the action of 'not stealing' as it's in the game mechanics have probably all taken a feeder or two... lol

  • @Casarat -  merci beaucoup   -   sometimes I am so naive

  • Agree with the statement Napabeth of not having intellect to read forum.
They are also the ones who don't want to work for it, would rather it be given to them.
They proudly proclaim, "I have x amount of currants," which were gotten from cashing in on items taken. And this is occuring in a game where items stolen can be easily made/obtained without stealing.
Makes me wonder if this is a reflection of the future RL world and if it is, it saddens me deeply.

  • Let's think about the good in the world and the positive.
There will always be optimists and pessimists.
A true Glitchen is happy and optimistic after a moan about the less fortunate and the less altruistic.

    That's utter bollocks.

I had things stolen from my street  in the first few days -  this helped me understand that "my" street was not what I thought it was and my expectations have been adjusted.

I think the behaviour of some objects is misleading,  hopefully that will  be sorted, I imagine it will be in some way... which may not be what you or I agree with.

Just because people express different opinions from yours doesn't mean they're guilty of (what you see as) a crime.

  • There is another thing to consider.  Many people leave items out on their new streets for their visitors to have.  It could well be that some items were taken innocently by people who thought they were FREE for the taking.  How many of us leave things like meat collectors out in the quarters and expect them to remain there?  Not many of us.  It is unique to find items on a street and some people may get carried away with excitement.  They can't help themselves!  Who doesn't love to find Freebies?

  • I was stating my personal opinion : ) Not against anyone or for anyone particularly.  If we're all forced to read this **** people shouldn't get upset when an opinion they don't agree with get's typed.  This forum is for the sharing of opinions and ideas!  : ) Printed T-shirts are a bit 80's though..'specially with that thick velvet writing... :?

  • @Brib - I would agree with that point if I visited a street and there were say...6 piggy feeders there and a bunch of other random crap but if  I enter and there is 1 piggy feeder and some pigs it would never occur to me to take what the owner obviously placed for the pigs.  I don't understand the mentality of some people I guess.  Different moral and ethical standards.

  • kleptomaniac: someone with an irrational urge to steal in the absence of an economic motive

Why would you assume that people are taking stuff they don't want?

Not to mention that it's clearly questionable whether picking up stuff from public streets is "stealing" in the first place.

  • Blimey have you even been reading the forums Janitch..semantics aside, you walk onto someone's home street, with just their home on it...and just the pigs they put on it, and just the pig feeder they put on it to feed the pigs...so, it stands to reason to any sane person walking on to that street that the piggy feeder was placed by the owner to feed the pigs.  I have to stop posting as this will go on eternally, forever and ever and ever hahahahahahaha - I'll tell you what thought, will be a pretty scary thought to think that some of the glitch here are actual RL neighbours to someone...*tie down your garden gnomes!!!*

  • It's griefers vs. builders all over again. Just like it was griefers vs. herb gardeners before we had our beta-homes.
Objectively, yes, you leave stuff that's not nailed down out, and eventually someone who doesn't play like you will wander through and hoover everything up.
What will be interesting is how TS takes notice of this phenomenon, and develops tools for both styles of play.
    IE: Locking tools for builders/gardeners.
That's really the next phase of development needed here, and has been proposed elsewhere, sometimes by me.

  • @Crashtestpilot - thank you for your logical post sincerely! To the point and suggesting some solution from TS in the future.  I do have a tendency to get side-tracked away from the main points at hand : )

  • It does seem natural to feel they we have ownership of "our" streets, so TS should provide some controls to enable that.  However, until they do, those are public streets.

What I find odd is the surprise that the social controls we're used to in real life don't apply here (where there is anonymity and no consequences).  The Internet is a massive social experiment of its own and we're only now learning how people operate in it.  Assuming that "real life" is a good template for on-line behavior is perhaps natural, but in my experience faulty.

We've been living in tribal groups for millions of years, large-scale societies for thousands and only on the Internet for tens.  It's early days yet.

  • "and not all pigs are created equal (George Orwell said it best,"

you're looking for "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others".

it is also possible that you are misunderstanding the satirical context [and thus the meaning] of that quote.

  • So if I come to your street and harvest your tree is that stealing? Wouldn't it be if I did the same in RL?
Posted 9 months ago by Koftun Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Harvesting trees in glitch is not stealing. No one, except trolls, says it is.
Posted 9 months ago by Tibbi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Not trolling, I was simply pointing out that comparing glitch to RL doesn't always work. An activity which most people would consider theft in RL isn't at all here.

This is further confounded by the fact that some glitchen enjoy placing food, tools, etc out in front for others to take. Coffee and meat left by a signpost is fair to take but a feeder isn't? They are both easy enough to create. So what are the rules?

    Harvest my tree? Ok?
Harvest my wood tree to death? Maybe?
    Poison my tree? No?
    Nibble my pig? Ok?
    Bait my pig? No?
Take a cauldron by the signpost? Ok?
Take a butterfly milker by the signpost? No?

There are too many different ways of playing. Too many grey/subjective areas. For me, the answer is simply don't leave it out front if you don't want it taken.

And no, I have never taken anyone's RHK equipment or anything other than "food" left out.
Posted 9 months ago by Koftun Subscriber! | Permalink
  • One more thought on this:

Clearly, harvesting trees doesn't bother anyone (well, maybe it bothers SOMEone) -- but at the end of the day, it's a renewable resource. IE, if you harvest it, it doesn't harm someone else's ability to harvest it.

In a similar vein, I think it would not bother many to have one's rocks harvested from one's front yard, again, because these grow back.

Now, one could make an argument that, say, chicken squeezing or pig nibblage, in as much as they take "units of wear" away from the herds parked in front of the beta-homes.  I think the bulk of us who put animals out there for others are doing it as an act of sharing.

As an aside, I've really been enjoying those who are putting icons and stills out front. Icons are sometimes a great substitute for eating, because, you drop 6-7 hundred currants, and you basically get a free energy recharge.

Let's return to trees:  I think the acts of over-harvesting (particularly for wood trees) or tree-poisoning start to get a little more obnoxious. Why? Well, for those of us who have self-organized "resource routes" have made a social obligation to maintain our end of those resource routes on behalf of others.

Finally, back to meat & milk collectors: For those of us who are maintaining herds for the good of the community, this becomes a source of griefing, because the homeowner's intent (public good) becomes a burden for them to maintain on behalf of others owing to the actions of a few.

Now, it's axiomatic to say, if you don't want such things disappearing, then don't put them out.
It's also axiomatic to say "this is why we can't have nice things."

  • This is why we can't have nice things when we put out?

  • Folks, while the devs may or may not be working on something to combat the arguing and complaints, just don't add more fuel to the fire. if you don't like your stuff getting stolen, DON'T PUT STUFF THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE. You putting things there in the first place is the reason for all the arguing and complaints.
Also, I think that if the devs made the collectors unstealable and uncollectible from, I think all of everyone's problems would be solved. No more arguments and no more complaints. Cause the only people complaining are the ones whose stuff gets "stolen." After all, no one's going to be complaining, "It's not fair that I can't take or collect from the collectors and feeders from people's housing streets!" if the feeders and collectors were locked down. So I think that if TS made feeders and collectors unstealable and uncollectible from, I think all would be well. No arguments, no complaints.

  • But if some of us are putting out the feeders to benefit people as a whole, and people who take the feeders are only benefiting themselves.... I mean, yes, as it stands now instead of getting frustrated at continued taking of my remote herdkeeping equipment I just didn't put any more out. So yeah, I can change my actions and get less stress. But as far as making suggestions as to what we wish glitch would be like on relaunch - something we've been encouraged to do...
