Market Trends...? Are there any...? How do you protect against other glitches lowballing?

I know everyone sees it!!!
One listing for 100 then one for 99 then six for 45 currants....
How does one protect the market or can it be prevented?

  • It's capitalism in action:

Anyone can undersell you if they feel like it makes them enough profit.  You can't force people to be price-gougers and to over-charge for stuff.

  • There will always be people willing to take a loss for a quick buck.  If you want to sell for the going price, you'll have to be willing to wait.  Let the people who want it first take the hit, let yours sit overnight at the normal price.

If it moves down to a lower price permanently, then the supply just outweighed the demand, and the price adjusted accordingly.

  • If you are curious about trends, I recommend Zog's Tools. I am sure there are others.

  • Stop trying to sell things that can be easily had, like Guano, for insane prices. Problem solved.

  • Well I'm selling No-no (obviously)
All the powders; "extreme" everything powders and the like.
    No guano here....!
Is there a way to organize and adjust the market ??

  • If you think everything is under priced, buy it all and sell it for a higher price.  If you think that's too much work... then maybe artificially trying to raise the price isn't the right thing to do.

  • Do you understand "free-market"?  That means everyone is free to participate (or not) and charge whatever they feel is the "right" price.

Trust me, if you try to control the market, there is sufficient anti-authoritarian and libertarian feeling here to take your scheme down in a heartbeat.

Look up "potlatch culture" and take a few lessons away from your research.

  • i sell cheap because i like to unload my bags quickly and i make a ton of money doing it.

if i feel market prices are too insanely greedily high for a particular item, i will flood the market with cheaper ones.

just last week someone was selling a mostly useless key for 850c and uninformed people who didn't know how commonly it spawned were buying it at that price. so i undercut it. that original seller trying to profit hugely by exploiting people bout an awful lot of that key from me at over 500 before i managed to collapse the market right down to 100.

if you want to try to keep prices high, you're welcome to make me rich trying.

  • Trying to control a market where supply is much more than demand is unwise and not worth it. You need to find that rare moments where supply is actually less than demand. One example that comes into mind is when they stop people from being able to teleport to secret locations/seam streets such as Ajaya Bliss. Suddenly the demand for keys rose to the point that people willingly buy keys for ridiculously high price. Of course, such rare moments are only temporary and hard to predict. But if you successfully nailed then you could be seeing large gain coming your way in a relatively short time. Hope that helps.

  • As I've said before, the current auction setup pretty much forces everyone to price underneath the current lowest price.  Because you are charged fees for putting an item on auction, you cannot edit the price, and you have a limited time, you lose a bunch of money for everything that does not sell.  When you put an item on auction, you must pick a price that you think will ensure a sale.  This is why I almost always donate my stuff or sell it to vendors.  And I concentrate on diversifying skills, so I can make anything I really need myself.  I don't know how to change the auction mechanic so that it will actually work.

  • I never price underneath the current lowest price.  I have a pricing strategy that keeps currants coming in, doesn't require undercutting anyone, and at the same time keeps insane over-pricing from becoming the norm for those products.

The auction in no way "requires" anyone to underprice.

  • Never sell an item for less than 81% of it's value.

  • what's with this seller Utopia? he's started well over 1300 auctions in the last 20 minutes -- all corn, potatoes, or meat, and none of them competitively priced :/

  • He's also a quick buyer, he bought my 3 crystals for the prices of one in a second.

  • It's probably one of those auto sniper things, if this becomes like e-bay I swear I'm never touching the auction house with a 10 plank stick ever again.

  • @Cabenn - the easiest way is to enforce the market floor the vendors provide.  Go to a Tool Vendor (there's a crowd in Cebarkul for a reason), and buy anything that's being sold for less than 80% + 1 current.  Spend your whole bankroll doing it.  Sell everything you get to the vendor.  Usually, you can make about 5-15% profit the first time you do this.  Rest in the knowledge that you're clearing out undercutting prices, you are personally making a profit, and you're taking advantage of the fact that other players are willing to sell at a loss.

  • Yes, I like people who sell to vendors also, because that keeps supply lower. If EVERYONE were selling at auction, then the prices wouls drop like a rock. The "free market" is only partly true here as the vendors do support prices for some things that do not have much demand. I never sell to vendors. It is not worth my time to deal with finding and hanging around the tool vendor. I cook when I am on line and while at work (where I can not go ingame but can access the auctions and forums) I do my selling.

Everyone has a different game play approach and they are all right. Even the ones that seem to unfairly jack up or depreciate an auction price.

  • Everyone plays differently and its not correct to say 'this is how you should play'.

Some players will sell for a quick buck or because they think the market is 'unfair' and that can't be helped its their choice.

Aside from this you can still set reasonable prices above vendors and make a profit.

For example I sold a load of firefly jars at 450 which is 250 profit a jar just because of the market shifts.

You just have to look out for good deals (i.e buy low sell high, or market trends).

One thing is certain the market is never the same but you can sell a variety of things a make a lot of money if you play it right.

  • Part of it is just diversification. I was making a pretty penny on Awesome Stews, then everybody started making Awesome Stews. Now, I've found other stuff that I can make for around the same amount of total energy and around the same cash totals. You just can't let yourself get caught up by any one method of trying to play the market.
