I wish the Glitch Change Log changes were explained in the forums. :( *Question*

This: "Roaming animals that have found their way to the ancestral lands are being humanely shepherded back to more hospitable regions."

Does this mean we won't find chickens and butterflies in the AL anymore??
Geezus that was the only reason I go there.  I can fill up my entire backpack full of grain and milk in very little time.  I don't go there for the traps as I only ever get stuff stolen so I dump all my stuff at home and make runs for grain.  -_-

I will be very very sad if it's not just piggies that were taken out of the AL....

Also please TS stop being obscure in your Glitch Change Log updates on the side of the screen, and when you make a change in the game,  please make a post in the forums about it explaining what it was exactly that you did and so you can get feedback on it from us.  We ARE after all your beta testers and a LOT of us are paying for this too!!  We should be able to help you figure stuff out like this and work WITH you.... not just play the game and wait for you to do stuff to us.  You know?

For real I'm going to bed now. I hope someone has the answer to my question by the time I come back.  *^_^*

  • Why go to the AL for grain and milk? aren't there enough butterflies and chieken in "normal" streets?
That being said, I don't see a reason why animals should *not* exist in AL at all... I'm not one of those folks that mourn a starved virtual piggy. But that's just me.

  • Oh Nevet!  No there's not.  Not at all.  Once in a very rare while I get a gem or something from the dust traps that I do not have room for in my bags, being filled with grains and milks, from the AL, and it makes my day very bright to drop a stack of grains or milk in order to trade up for a gem.  And then I stand there scared about a juju coming and then end up tp'ing out.  :>

The grains and milk from the AL just taste better.  They're nice and free range.  ...

I still want a answer.  You totally just picked on me without answering the question I notice.

But it would be nice  if just the piggies were herded back.

  • AL was great for milk and grain farming because there is hardly anything else there. No worrying about mis-clicking/selecting trees/vendors/shrines/players and you could refill your energy very easily. I just did my normal run through AL and with no animals, it's depressing to run through several streets with no traps to trigger and I don't need any quoins except for the favor ones. Changing my third teleport point to something else now. :(

  • The jujus are easy to deal with, just hit space bar and jump over them when they get close, and then they won't take your stuff. I go there all the time, and they have yet to take anything from me.

  • You could always release more chickens and butterflies, but for the love of the Giants please don't release piggies in the Ancestral Lands.
Posted 11 months ago by Mal'akh Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Miso George, that update refers to the fact that yesterday all the animals that had gotten into the Ancestral Lands were removed. You shouldn't have been able to release them there to begin with, but through some metaphysical loophole a few hubs allowed you to for a while.
Posted 11 months ago by Blanky Subscriber! | Permalink
  • <sigh> Lynnt I have severe lag, as soon as the juju comes up and I get the error notice, by the time the text pops up they've already come, stolen something, and left. =/

Blanky, do you mean ALL the animals will be gone from there??
What's the point of the Ancestral Lands now?  :<  I hope you guys will reconsider.  As I can see I'm not the only one who wanted them there (jalandy thanks for posting), ...except piggies.  Or hell EVEN piggies!!  Because people can always rescue them from there if they don't want to be there.

Edit-more thoughts: As a game that prides itself and *advertises* itself as a game where users can do anything, create anything and shape the world the way they want, the elimination of the ability to release animals in the Ancestral Lands seems like a really needless and pointless crackdown on something that didn't really need changing in the first place. Bug or not if users want animals there they should be able to release them there in order to help shape the world the way they want, which is what Glitch is about, and users who DON'T want them there are free to youth-potion them, pack them up and take them home. <end rant>

  • I've always thought of the AL to be more of a bonus area. The traps offer rare items, and the coins tend to be more valueable than usual. Whenever I go, I never stop to harvest from any animal (because of time limit and JuJu attacks), I tend to do that anywhere else in the world. Of course, this is just how I play...

Posted 11 months ago by Maruchan Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Just right, Muncey: the Ancestral Lands were designed to be about the traps & quoins (along with the challenge of the timer and the Jujus).

Miso George: we hear you, but we've also heard from many more people who don't like every location in the world being the so similar, having the same resources, etc. (and we definitely don't advertise ourselves "as a game where users can do anything, create anything and shape the world the way they want", not least of all because that wouldn't be a "game" at all).
Posted 11 months ago by stoot barfield Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm glad they are gone. The ancestral lands are an area with a weird vibe that makes it difficult for Glitch to remain there for very long. It was weird to have them overrun with animals. I'm kind of hoping that in a future update we might find out more about the Jujus and why they are so keen on stealing paper.

  • Huh, stoot..?  "..and we definitely don't advertise ourselves "as a game where users can do anything, create anything and shape the world the way they want", not least of all because that wouldn't be a "game" at all"

But, you DO.  This is why I started playing Glitch to begin with.

QUOTE "Glitch is a web-based massively-multiplayer game which takes place inside the minds of eleven peculiarly imaginative Giants. You choose how to grow and shape the world: building and developing, learning new skills, collaborating or competing with everyone else in one enormous, ever-changing, persistent world." END QUOTE
Pretty sure that's a direct quote off the Glitch team's own website.  Actually it is.  Because that's where I got it.

If the whole challenge of the ancestral lands was just to gather coins and face the juju's why have FOUR ENTIRE REGIONS OF IT??  Four.  Seriously.  FOUR.  That is too many without any reason to go there besides traps which are always already trapped when I go there and jujus that I can't escape from (they cause a lot of other people problems too).

I hope you're at least planning on releasing four more unique regions (not knock offs of existing regions, hello Rasana) so we can explore them without time limits and jujus and actually grow and shape the world.  Oh wait except we're not supposed to be doing that now (??).

Also stoot as long as you're here, 1. thanks for taking the time to respond, even though I disagree strongly with everything you said, and 2. are you planning on answering any more the questions in the big question thread you told people to ask questions in?  Because people have posted more questions but there haven't been any more answers forthcoming.

  • 'Choosing how to grow and shape the world', and 'Growing and shaping the world in any way you like' are two different things. The first entails choices, meaning there won't be a choice for everything. The second, would be a total mess. The world would be a chaotic overgrown world full of pandemonium, griefing, whining, quitting, etc.

The AL doesn't have to be there, TS can easily just remove it (Im pretty sure...I don't myself develop games) and there won't be hundreds of high-yield coins, and free items, and many many streets to explore. Even a low-level glitch could easily obtain hundreds of xp just from exploring one region in the AL.

You should be happy about having them, for the reasons we have them, not whining over a lack of animals. You can find an insanely large amount of animals in Besara, Aranna, and Tamila. That's not too long of a walk from Rasana.

  • personally, i found this specific change to seem rather arbitrary.  i never really bothered with the animals, but found that the butterflies brought a certain atmosphere to the zones that made me smile.

but in regard to the wider issue of glitch change logs being explained in the forums, and as long as we are quoting the website, i would just like to note that the changelog stream on the main forum page says, "Changes are summarized in forum posts several times each week."  ... yeah...
Posted 11 months ago by katlazam Subscriber! | Permalink
  • katlazam, that was primarily when larger, non-tweaky changes were being made to the game on a weekly basis, when waaaay bigger stuff wasn't taking up most of the schedule. Now we generally do an individual forum post for larger changes when they do happen (the addition of new quests, skills, or items for example). More often than not there's not much more to say than fits in the space of a tweet to begin with.

But (!) on change-heavy weeks I'll post a round up topic for you all.

QFT. The second option sort of already exists, it's called Second Life & ' a chaotic overgrown world full of pandemonium, griefing, whining, quitting, etc' is pretty much a good description, haha!

Glitch is a game, rather than a virtual world, it has boundaries, mechanics & rules to shape play & Tiny Spark has repeatedly posted that they are revisiting many of these core mechanics to make them more responsive to player actions & more fun.   They changed the rules on sacrificing piggies on shrines when it became obvious that this had a negative effect on gameplay. I like that there is an attempt to differentiate different regions from each other, streets as they are can often feel very samey.

  • Personally I love the idea of diversifying the regions and even having region specific animals. I've also never understood why people wanted animals in Ancestral Lands since there's a time limit and there are so freaking many animals everywhere else in Ur.

I mean really. Why would you harvest from butterflies and chickens somewhere that will kick you out when Ur is literally full of thousands of butterflies and chickens and piggies on almost every other street? I too have massive lag issues with only the stupid jujus (yes there's a help ticket and apparently it's being investigated, sigh) so if it weren't for the fact that I really want that last juju badge I would never bother with AL at all. No way would I go through the aggravation of jujus just to squeeze a few chickens.

Because that was part of the fun for me.  Being able to *have* to get a certain amount (my own goal: a full backpack) by the end of the timed trip made me do it... whereas if I have to go and just walk around normal streets with other stuff like trees and things in addition to animals I just won't, I buy the resources off auction.  Because it's not fun for me on the other streets usually.  :p

No I don't stop for dirt piles.  Why do people even need dirt??
It would be cool if the "chocolate" candies were made with dirt instead of poo actually.

  • The Ancestral Lands are so much nicer without animals. The stillness lends to the mystique of the AL regions.

There are tons of streets in other regions that are unpleasantly crowded with animals. You can't pass through without dozens of pigs begging to be petted. Or chickens squawking underfoot.

It's nice to be able to run through the AL and enjoy the nostalgia.

Have you confused Glitch with Second Life?
Posted 11 months ago by Tsu Dho Nimh Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Miso, I believe the whole point of The Big Update is to start giving us even more freedom to shape the world.

But I think, and I freely admit I could be wrong, but I think what Stoot was pointing out is that it is actually not possible to do anything.  I can't, for example, decide to build a sword and go around attacking other Glitchen.  I can't dig a hole from Shimla Mirch to Alakol.

No matter how much freedom we have, it's still freedom within a game, and there are confines and rules that we cannot shape to our will.

As for having four regions for the AL -- I sometimes make runs at peak hours and am lucky to trigger more than a trap or two, so four regions spreads the population out so it doesn't become even harder to find traps.

Posted 11 months ago by Little Miss Giggles Subscriber! | Permalink
  • piggies had some issues so that they wouldn't always feed themselves from food left on the ground or from trees and consequently wouldn't give out meat or sometimes would die.  i'm guessing they fixed that.
Posted 11 months ago by katlazam Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'll just chime in with those who are glad the AL animals are gone. Much more mysterious now..

    ---

On the wood trees, they worked like any other tree: if you start watering, petting, or harvesting them they kind of push you off to one side of the trunk. That worked fine for other trees since you'd still be in front of the tree after the push, allowing you to hit the enter/return key repeatedly to water, pet, and harvest, one after the other.

Wood trees, though, are very skinny, so when it pushed you aside to water you'd no longer be in front of them. As a result you'd have to scoot over and pet, and boom, pushed off to the side again so that harvesting required more movement.

They no longer do that,, which is great.
