We need to save Glitch!

Everyone, please! We cannot lose this! We need to reach out and try to get people playing, get Glitch known! Maybe, somehow, we can even raise money! But we need to save this game somehow!

Go to work, school, whatever you go to, and invite and invite and invite. Do whatever you can. We cannot lose this game. This game is the only game I've ever seen that doesn't depend solely on grinding and competition; one of the best ways for people to excel is to help others! We cannot let the game die. Rally together, dear Glitches. There has to be a way.

Devs, at least start up a Kickstarter page!

  • I would pay a subscription for Glitch.  I even got my husband playing and he doesn't touch these kinds of games usually.

  • Kickstarter? Promoting Glitch? Subscriptions? Please... there must be something!!

TS- can you create a special set of items that can be bought with credits? End of the World items, perhaps?

For such a beautiful and wonderful game filled with so many wonderful people, there must be a way to keep this going. We all love Glitch so much, and I hate to see it go.

  • "New account creation by the general public has been disabled. However, existing account holders are still able to invite people in order to create new accounts."

So, I guess it's possible to get more, but not as many as they may need.

  • I doubt there's anything we can do, but if there is, I would totally pitch what I could afford. I really, really would like to see Glitch succeed.

  • To be frank, if there was a way for users to bail TS and Glitch out, then I'm sure stoot &co. would have made some sort of announcement to that effect, before making this particular decision.

It is nice to want to save them, but perhaps it would be better to put your time and energy into mailing well-wishes, cards and the like to TS HQ, were they to release suitable contact information.

  • I'd have easily paid double my top tier subscription. This is the only online game I ever played. I loved it so much, I started as one character, bought a top tier sub, and then sent *myself* a new invite so I could start the game all over again with a new character and subscription.

My Glitch is in mourning for Ur. I need a black armband for her.

  • @Orange Canary I think I'm going to be sending myself an invite and playing a new character for the next couple of weeks because I want to recapture that amazing feeling of discovery and imagination that I did when I started playing almost a year and a half ago. I just want to wander the streets and say goodbye to everything. I can't believe we're going to lose it all.

  • This is by FAR the most welcoming game community EVER!!!....And i love it its the only one i paid into either! So yes if theres any way to save it.....its time to brainstorm....PRONTO.

  • I'm sure many passionate, creative ideas will be generated here, but if Stoot and the rest of the staff made this very public announcement, there's just no way.  Let's enjoy the game and staff the short amount of time we still have them.

    And thank them every day.

  • @Sharmy

Do it! I was Red Canary in my other Glitch life. I was stunned and amazed at how much the new player experience had changed for the better, embodying the magic of Glitch so fully. Red Canary was a level 42 Glitch before the housing reset and I gave that all up so that Orange Canary could be imagined by the giants to start anew.

So So SO sad. Hoping hoping hoping it can somehow be saved.

  • Ah, I think it's too late to save it now.. Unless someone donates millions of dollars to them.

  • I just wish I'd known they were in such dire straights earlier.  I recall during the last feat Stoot saying something to the effect of "make sure you buy a subscription so we can eat! :)" And I just had no idea.  I'm a graduate student, I don't have THAT much disposable cash so it was one of those in a year or so when things settle and I have more money I planned on buying a subscription.  But now I can't do that, even though I wish they could.

  • Dont even bother pretending it can be saved. this happened before, so eff it. move on, nothing anyone can say or do can stop it, its a matter of finances, and it freaking blows. but begging, offering help, etc. will do no good.

  • I hate to be in denial, but I just cant suck myself away from the forum after the update. Please please, consider if we all paid. Put up a survey or option if you must to see what the outcome is...but I believe most people here would happily pay a subscription to keep the game alive. things are different if players dont know they will lose the game...but with this news, Im sure many more would rally to help save glitch.

We need to subscribe, we need to open ads, and we need the ability to donate if we choose.

Devs...You would be surprised what we would do for glitch.Give us a chance to prove it? Just say how.

  • If there's a Kickstarter, I could make crochet versions of characters. It takes forever and it's a lot of work, but it's worth it.

  • i am in denial too. It would be cool to see a game owned by all the players. It would put a good use to the voting system that was developed but seldom used.

  • I am just shocked that there was no "help us save glitch" thread.

I hate to nay-say to the devs when everyone is loving them. But that was an oversight. Should have trusted the people to pull through. We all would feel much better about this if we had given our all and still failed, rather then sitting here like abandoned ducklings in a wind storm.

I think we should be given a chance to show what we got.

  • Please, a Kickstarter could change everything. I guarantee that most of the Glitch community would pitch in some way, and I know plenty of us would be fine with paying to play the game; not just as a subscription, but just to play. I know I would, this is the only game I have ever even actually paid to do anything in. I was so devoted, and it literally was the one thing I spent more time on/with than my girlfriend. This isn't just another game..this is a livelihood. I can't see it go without fighting for it. <3

And I agree with the post above me-if we had known something was wrong, we would have fought. Give us a chance to work for our beloved game. Now I just feel abandoned, instead of working to keep it going.

  • I do not know much about game developing and the financial world. Even so, here is my 1 cent worth of a suggestion to the developers: ADD COMMERCIALS & ADVERTISEMENTS of big corporations to the website. That's how the free flash based games stay in business on Faisbuk (intentionally misspelled), isn't it? I'm sure that the developers thought about it, but I haven't seen it mentioned. Maybe they thought it would spoil the character of the game, but as a last resort, I would say go for it.

And yes, I would pitch with my own cash, meager as it is, should that make a difference.

UPDATE: I feel such a fool. I just found out who Stoot is. This is from his FB page: "Stewart Butterfield (born Daniel Stewart Butterfield in 1973) is a Canadian-born entrepreneur and businessman. He co-founded the photo sharing website Flickr and its parent company Ludicorp with then-wife Caterina Fake. In March 2005 Ludicorp was acquired by Yahoo!, where Butterfield continued as the General Manager of Flickr until he left Yahoo on July 12, 2008. In 2009 Butterfield founded gaming startup Tiny Speck, which launched its first project, Glitch, on September 27, 2011. In 2005, Butterfield was named one of Businessweek's Top 50 Leaders in the entrepreneur category. He was also named to the MIT Technology Review TR35 as one of the top 35 innovators in the world under the age of 35. In 2006, he was named to the Time 100, Time Magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in the world. In the same year, he appeared on the cover of Newsweek magazine."

I am sure the man knows his business waaaay better than me and my stupid ideas to save Glitch. If he says is over, then it's over.

  • How about a "recovery mode" where some of the extremely upper level or superfluous aspects are temporary dumbed down to save server, and we all work to see if we can pull enough funds and new members in to help.

Just giving us an extra month to work over our social connections and sites like facebook, pintrest, twitter, and such, we could get a good estimate of what we can pull in, as well as see if a pay-to-play type of action would be popular enough to help revenue.

Im thinking of this based on Runescape, which is arguably the ugliest mmo in circulation, but exceptionally popular and in no risk of shut down. With a 5 dollar a month rate, it should suffer more. I played it for years, and still send them my subscription automatically purely in support of a good game, and I havnt logged on in almost 5 years.

If a broke 25 yr old boarding kennel girl like me can pitch in, most of the community can try. Even the kids...most parents will shut ya up for 5 bucks a month!

  • Devs, also make a call for subscriptions; I have tremendous belief that most who did not pay a subscription would start one faced with the extinction of the game.

  • The announcement seems to imply it's such a money loser in terms of bandwidth and/or server resources that it seems unlikely anything can be salvaged. It was a fun year. I'll miss you, Glitch, but I'll probably be more productive when you're gone.
