Magic tuesday - foxes, sloths, cabinets, oh my!

i.imgur.com/7mU5s.png

I hope you've all brushed up on your fox brushing (get it??), because foxes have finally been discovered in Ur. Time to get some fiber and turn it into cloth with the spindle and loomer; grab them from your local hardware or animal goods vendor.

If foxes aren't up your alley, then perhaps the sloth is more to your liking. Grab some metal rods and prepare to make snails. Sloths love metal.

For those players who have a lot of junk to store, we've reintroduced cabinets. They come in 3 sizes (small, regular and wall) and a variety of designs. Just check your furniture bag next time you're home (You'll need to leave your house and /home again to get them).

Miss your old firebog home? No longer! We've released some new furniture upgrades so your can recreate your authentic bog experience.

So head out to brush some foxes and create some snails. Lets us know what you think and tell us about any bugs you uncover. Go!

Note 1: We're gradually unlocking new areas of the world. This process will take a couple of hours.

---Known Issues---

We are investigating these things:

-Open verb may be available when new Cabinet is in your bag
-Some players may not be getting the Fox Brush or Bait from Ranger
-Some cabinets which have more than 16 slots only allow you that many- FIXED
-Rug recipe was removed- not a bug, sorry!

-Inventory area grows large with pixelated graphic when using fox brush for some players
-Reports of zooming issues near Foxes and Sloths
-Loss of Fiber when canceling spinning action- FIXED
-If you get Fox Brush out before Fox appears, brushing may fail

-Spaceship Cabinet takes two tries to open- FIXED
-Stuck Sloth on Kaha Haha- FIXED
-Keyholders cannot open cabinet- yet.

-Going "back to world" with an open cabinet will show the open cabinet display. Just hit "done" to close it then.

  • One tiny request, please make it so the lion waterfall can be placed higher on the wall as its excellent to have it at top of screen.

Ideas spawned from the newest releases.

A shortcut to Urth, could it possible be made to be just that, that is you jump into Ur from it.

A fireplace like the one in some bog house appartments

A mini whirlpool that would fit with the underwater theme as a lamp/ hanging deco? Or with the lion fountain as a way back to Ur (if this is possible see Shortcut idea)

An exotic pool/ marble bath rug/ seat/decoration for our Lion fountain to fall into.

Mushroom shelves/tables and chairs for the dark woods, glowy eyes for the walls, Fungi plants ^^

Dragon spewing a lava fountain. Some hell themed items would be awesome, those horns on the bartenders head!!

A fire to place under a cauldron

Moar floor options please. Tiles for a kitchen.

Autumn Lodge needs leaf piles to jump in or forrage in, maybe we could find hidden items/quoins or just have fun making them fly up and swirl about

other ideas brewing I'll add em if they form in time.

  • Bees! - "two people both mining and harvesting will yield less resources over time than if one person mines full time and the other person harvests."

I don't know about anyone else, but if I have to do ANYTHING full time in a game, that game will not be fun. Period.

As to some of Bees! other comments:

"fox brushing is not going to be changing to use the keyboard. take part in one of the hundreds of other activities in the game instead.

if we changed the game every time someone threatened to quit, we'd never get anything done. or if we took the time to explain every decision to every player. sorry! "

" what exactly are you looking for? what would satisfy you?"

I have to assume you were having a VERY bad day. Your comments are usually very constructive and kind. These were just bitchy. I realize that you are human and have bad days, but as a representative of TS, perhaps it would be better to step away from the keyboard on those days.

  • That was my feeling as well, Audaria....  actually, starting with Stoot's "Yeah, we heard you, but no."

I had expected an explanation (in layman's terms) of why it really isn't possible.... followed by something like "We trust and hope that this particular mechanic won't deter you from enjoying the game."    It was the entire lack of compassion that struck me.

edit to add:  It seemed very uncharacteristic.

  • Bees I have to say great job! The Glitch team is doing a good job of mixing up the type of play in the game. Most games now days are mouse only. Keep up the good work.

I to can say I have issue with carpal tunnel. I limit my playing to what I can handle.

  • A Standing Round of Applause for Bees! and stoot's replies: About freaking time!!!!

Kudos for keeping it real, and more luv for TS - you folks never cease to amaze me with awesomeness :DD

  • I agree for once the dev's are upfront and gave a truthful answer unlike most who would say it is on our development road map and then never really do it.

  • Honesty and compassion are not mutually exclusive.
Posted 8 months ago by Lucille Ball Subscriber! | Permalink
  • And in that vein, a certain amount of compassion is due from us, the BETA TESTERS who have been graced with the honor of testing this game before it is done!

We should remember that Tiny Spec is under the gun to get this out in time to meet their goals and start earning real money.  With most software projects, if that doesn't happen, the whole project is in jeopardy.  The days leading up to any release date only become more and more stressful, and haranguing the artist doesn't get anything done faster or better.

Feedback is good.  Wish lists are good.  But repeated whining about the same thing does get tiresome and hard to deal with.  Yes, this whole thing is a customer service "opportunity", but we should cut them a little slack, yes?
Posted 8 months ago by Carl Projectorinski Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Carl - there wouldn't have been any 'whining' if the staff hadn't selectively ignored a concern about equal accessibility and then acted uncharacteristically dismissive and unempathetic when they finally deigned to respond.  As it has been pointed out, disability issues are extremely sensitive to those affected, and flippant dismissal is simply not good customer relations.
Posted 8 months ago by Aurora Dellaterra Subscriber! | Permalink
  • You're right, and I agree with you.  But there has been a great deal of whining before this particular issue regarding other issues, which is what I was actually referring to.
Posted 8 months ago by Carl Projectorinski Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Ahh, yes, that is a valid point. Thanks for clarifying :)

  • For what it's worth, I'd like to add my $.02 about the fox-brushing. I, too, find the click-hold-move-mouse procedure painful and uncomfortable.

I think a mouse-based mechanic that would be less unpleasant would be: click on brush in inventory to "hold it" and click on fox to "brush." The "hold" could be (as it is now) time-limited. It's the holding-and-dragging portion of the exercise that's most problematic.

I know that very few changes in software really qualify as trivial. But it would be a kind and generous thing to do to consider this modification.

  • Hey where are the foxes?

  • I don't have any problems brushing foxes but I really hate the idea of specialization as I am a self-sufficient type of gal and I don't want to have to rely on anyone else for anything in this game!

I did think the devs responses to the request for keyboard access to fox brushing were a trifle grumpy sounding but I am actually surprised it has taken them this long to get grumpy with us given how hard they work and how many complaints I have seen!

I really like the idea I saw above of having a geriatric fox who lets you brush him once a day and tells tales of the olden days but another possibility would be for the Fox Ranger to sell tickets to brush his pet fox once a day as his inventory is currently a bit bare anyway.

The devs have done a mighty job of pleasing a difficult customer base so far and I just hope they remember to take care of themselves properly.  Regular sleep, good diet, exercise and de-stress activities are essential to keeping healthy and preventing burnout!  Those grumpy sounding replies signal burnout might be on its way so please, devs, take care of yourselves!  We need you!

  • I'm disappointed that people are attacking the developers and staff for giving straightforward and blunt answers. I'm grateful that we get interactions from them, regardless of whether they can make my every whim a reality. Having major issues with my hands is MY issue to deal with, not theirs. If there is an aspect of any game that is difficult for me I can work around it, not participate in that part of the game or find a way to participate but on a less frequent basis. And, having wrist and hand issues myself and having read the staff responses, I still don't see how they were taken as bitchy and/or insensitive. If anything, I was glad to get upfront answers that allowed me to say "okay, this won't change - time to make a plan that allows me to participate as best I can".

  • when i first tried the fox brushing i was like "hm, this is kind of awkward" and my first thought was how to do it via keyboard.

now, believe me i can bitch with the best of them, but this is just not a big deal. is it a sub-optimal interface for some people? yes. does it have a strong impact on the game as a whole? no. does it eliminate a form of gameplay? no. does it make the game less fun? maybe for some people, some times, but on the whole not really.

basically, not everything in the game is going to be perfect for everyone and this is pretty benign stuff.

would i prefer a keyboard based way to fox brush? yes. do i particularly care there isn't one? no.

  • I, for one, am relieved that something challenging has been introduced into the game. Things that used to be challenging back in the day were made trivial after the fact, and it has had the effect of making the game less frustrating at first glance, but more boring as time goes on and the player advances. As an example, one used to only be able to interact with butterflies only when one's avatar was perfectly lined up with it, and the butterflies all flew pretty high too boot, which required an awful lot of jumping and quick timing. At first I was thoroughly annoyed by this, but it became a challenge to me to conquer them, so I made an effort to practice until I became an expert at interacting with the butterflies. I was so proud of myself when I accomplished that, because it wasn't super easy! Then, the dev's changed it so you can just hover your mouse over the butterfly and click on them to interact with them, and also made it so they all stayed low to the ground. I was very disappointed. Lesson: if it's hard, that means that finally doing it will give you far greater rewards. If you can't do it at all because of a disability, I sympathize with you, but I'm sure you will find lots of lovely glitchen in game that will share their bounty with you (or you can alternately spend those massive amounts of currants people tend to accumulate with no idea of what to spend them on on that).

  • Pascale's comment above reminded me that most users of Windows (and probably other OSes) should have access to the ClickLock mouse setting, which lets you hold down the mouse button briefly to "start holding", then click once when you want to "stop holding", so that you don't have to hold the mouse button down for an extended time.

This feature may make it much easier for those with disabilities to brush foxes, and may make it easier to do non-Glitchy things on the computer as well!

Edit to add: For those who are wondering, the ClickLock feature should be in the Mouse settings, accessible from the Control Panel in Windows.  There is a chance that it depends on the mouse you use or the software you have installed, but I'm pretty sure that most people should have access to it.

  • Re: cabinets

I read that you are looking into unlocking them to keyholders. Would there be an option to also keep them locked? The same would apply if you are looking into unlocking SDBs but my understanding of it was that these are staying locked.

    Thanks.

  • Just wanted to add a big Thank You to the TS team, I for one enjoy the fox brushing, trying to out fox the fox as it were. Sometimes the gathering of resourse can be a bit boring, the fox brushing adds a little more fun to a great game. So sorry for those that are having a problem with it, if you catch me online, bring me the bait and I will be glad to gather the fibers for you.

  • On reflection, I love the new bog decorations, I really, really do. I'd like some better wall decorations though- strings of salamanders or heads in particular. maybe a ceiling hanging thing or two? although in my heart of hearts, what I really miss (I finally sold my house this week- my trophies will catch up me eventually, yes?) is my little bowl of polliwogs....

  • FWIW, trackballs affect most people's hands completely differently than mice do.  In particular they reduce the amount of arm movement you need to make and solve sore upper-arm problems that affect heavy mouse users.   Trackballs are steadier if they have a large ball, so I like certain logitech models such as this one.   If you have RSI I recommend you try one and see if it helps and how.
Posted 8 months ago by WalruZ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • There are also trackballs which are controlled by the thumb, which I find easier.  It reduces the arm and wrist movements enormously and is much better for my RSI.

Can't do a nice link like WalruZ, but from his link check more Logitech trackball mice!  The one I have has a blue thumb control ball.  It takes a little getting used to, but is so restful when one is skilled.

  • Query: Why isn't fox brushing subject to the "Easy Animalia" buff granted by a Gurly Drink? That is to say, after drinking a Gurly Drink and getting the buff, Fox Brushing still costs energy. Is this a bug?

P.S. My very first post on the forum! YAY GLITCH!
Posted 8 months ago by Yse The Great Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yse The Great: The Easy Animalia buff only applies to domesticated animals (i.e. Piggies, Chickens and Butterflies). We just haven't updated the buff's description to reflect this yet. So... not a bug!

  • Oh, OK. Makes sense to me. Thanks for clearing that up (and so fast, too)!
Posted 8 months ago by Yse The Great Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I haven't seen this anywhere yet, but as part of this patch we had 5 new hubs to explore.  When you visit some preserves you would check the map again to discover that it had given credit (with dotted line streets going away all over the place) for several streets within the same hub even though you'd never been to them.
Posted 8 months ago by Nerd of Epic Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Not a major thing but the entrances to some of the preserves dont match the map. For instance, in Tamila, Samga Preserves looks like it is in the middle of Maale Bads, but actually its the 3rd intersection, to the right most of Maale Bads. The middle intersection is actually a Quarters.

Edit: A few minutes ago, got a reboot message saying something like "We are making things better", now I am walking around my second floor doing nothing much and getting a ton of little white screen error messages. Anyone else?
