Shrines and queuing skills

Here's a suggestion to modify the way skills are learned.  It provides a mechanism for incorporating shrines into the skill learning process, and also suggests a way to queue skills to be learned.

Each skill is associated with one primary and two non-primary giants.  In order to learn a skill there is no interaction whatsoever with the giants involved (unless you want to speed up learning).

My proposal is that in order to queue a skill for learning, a glitch would have to visit a shrine for one of the giants involved with that particular skill to request to learn it.  The request could still be made through interaction with the magic rock, and perhaps the magic rock would suggest a suitable tithe in order to learn a skill, maybe in the form of a quest.

Also, if that sort of thing were implemented, optionally we could queue a second skill in advance so that when the first finished, learning of the second could begin.

As an even more advanced option, what if the giants only offer the most basic skills at first?  Only through devotion of worshipers (i.e. completing a worship project) could giants be convinced to start allowing glitches to learn higher levels of skills.  So, for example, Humbaba might offer Animal Kinship I to start.  But in order for anyone to be able to start learning AK II, we as a group would have to tithe a total of 500 butterfly milk to Humbaba.  That would unlock AK II at all of Humbaba's shrines for any glitch to queue it (assuming they meet the pre-reqs).

  • If you had to go to a shrine to learn a skill you wouldn't be able to do it from the webpage. I've been learning skills on my mobile browser when I can't get on my computer to enter the world.

  • I like the way we can learn skills in a separate browser without having to be in the game. I wouldn't want that to change.

  • Hmm... I understand your points about the convenience of using a browser to select a skill for learning.  What I do is estimate how long I'll be out of the game, and then queue skills that take longer to learn during those times.

I'm trying to think of ways that skill learning would be more interesting by creating better interactions between glitches and giants/shrines.  Right now interactions are minimal, unless you want to try to speed up learning, or to gain favor to unlock and emblem.

What about the other part of the suggestion, to make projects for higher levels of skills?  That would help build community, because people would have to work together to gather materials/perform actions.  It would also provide more group things to do other than just building more streets.

  • @Merek: Hmm.... well, it might be interesting to have players have to unlock the ability to learn new skills that weren't previously available, the same way they currently unlock new areas (only with donations to giants instead of projects). It would have to be something specific and hard to acquire that the giant is asking for, though (something that requires knowing the maximum skill level in that specific skill tree that the giant favors). I would envision that this would be a one-time thing: once the new skill is unlocked, everyone can learn it for free (plus their precious time) afterwards.

This might actually be pretty fun, since I was pretty excited when I first learned about new areas only being unlocked due to the efforts of the players. That's much better, in my opinion, then the new areas just magically appearing after an update....

    They could make it work.

  •  I too like the way we can learn skills in a separate browser without having to be in the game. That is what sets this game apart.

    Like Merek's suggestion on projects.
