Those darned, ubiquitous emblems...

So there's a love/hate relationship (mostly hate) for emblems right now... They are definitely useful, as each one gives you mood/energy/experience once per day, which is a good thing. The problem, I think, is that they only fit one per inventory slot... combined with the facts that they are very easy to come by (whether you want them or not), and that they cannot be donated or sold, they end up being accumulated in large, unmanageable quantities. The dislike of these things has even led to the recent trend of mailing unwanted emblems to devs (which I haven't done, but I think it's an interesting way to get attention...)

So, I wanted to start a thread for ideas on how to solve this problem. I know some suggestions have been mentioned in the past, but they seem to have been largely lost along the way. Among them have been ideas for other things to do with emblems, like being able to spend them to speed up learning.

I have mentioned this before but I think it was buried pretty quickly: I think it would be cool if we could combine one emblem from each of the 11 giants into a single super-emblem. This would help solve the space issue, as the super-emblem would take 1/11th of the space as each of its original components. It could give the same amount of mood/energy/experience per use as 11 individual emblems, and perhaps also some sort of additional bonus.

Any other ideas?

  • The Uber-emblem was the only one I have heard about existing ones. There have also been mentions to have the ability to reject them and spend it instead.

Stoot mentioned in chat that you will need more favour to get an emblem with the number of emblems you accumulate, that should halo a bit.

  • We should at least be able to donate additional emblems to the related god's shrine for some pittance of additional favor.. I would find that acceptable :)

  • People have mention needing a certain number of them in Street Projects - which would actually make sense in the context a Shrine is usually being added to the world.

Somewhere I mentioned building a 'shrine street', which you could only get to by spending an emblem... and it had statues of the Giants behind a corresponding Shrine. The Shrines would only accept emblems from the correct Giant, and the statues would increase in size and grow as the number of donated emblems grew.

  • Wouldn't the problem be solved by not automatically giving you an emblem when you cross the 1000 favor bonus? That system is already in place, you get a "retrieve emblem" option instead of "donate" when you have >1000 favor with a giant through a quest.

  • Not really, because that forces players who are not actively learning a skill into a position of either never donating to the Shrines, or never gaining favor from donations - essentially killing that entire game element for them. The Giants and Shrine donations are a big big part of the game 'fun' after a point. It's not the receiving emblems people are trying to resolve, it's having something to do with them once you've earned them. There's an achievement for earning 151 emblems... you spend the first 11 - so what to do with the other 140 (other than the obvious)?

  • FYI, I started a thread on this 3 days ago that has a couple interesting ideas: http://beta.glitch.com/forum/ideas/4241/

My personal idea was to allow the player to transform an unwanted emblem into 1000 favor worth of skill learning.  I often get emblems by accident when I am making donations to increase my xp, and would like to do something useful with them after the fact.

One other player in the other thread had the suggestion to give the player an option to get skill learning vs. an emblem when they hit 1000.  I like this pretty well.

I find the idea @Travinara mentioned of needing emblems for Street Projects to be pretty interesting.

  • A possible use... Since Giants hate it when you are disrespectful and want to get rid of emblems, a Rook Quest/Project. Not an anti-Rook thing, but a pro-Rook event.

  • As of the next test, emblem cost will scale up somewhat as you acquire more emblems, which should hopefully do a little to staunch the flow of unwanted emblems for now.

There will also definitely be more useful uses for emblems in the future. Combined with the above, you may someday find yourselves pining for the salad days when emblems were plentiful. Be careful what you wish for!

  • LOL, Pinot--I hope I don't regret it too much :)

  • It would be terrific if the amounts of energy, mood, and XP from fondling emblems increased as players' levels increased.  At the moment, as far as I know, you can't get more than +25 mood, +20 energy, and +36 XP from each emblem on each game day... so at level 43, I'm getting just as much from them as I did at level 1.  There would probably be much less grumbling about emblems if the numbers were higher.

As for other uses, stoot has said that we will eventually need to spend additional emblems in order to learn more skills.

  • Will our daily favor limit be scaled too?
