Group Halls Feedback

1] Group Project to build hall was very good. Small group with things in common seem to actually communicate with each other while building, which makes the whole endeavour a lot more fun.

2] Getting a proper street sign with your group name on it is cool.

3] One group claiming the only lot on a street and then not really using is a recipe for lameness. i imagine that there will either be a way to have more group halls per street, a restriction of group hall projects to residential quarters only .. or somehow evicting groups who don't use their prominently positioned hall.

4] The group hall "interior" was disappointing, tho it is obviously only a placeholder for the real thing. I think the quality of the interior and its features might make or break the concept. What sort of group specific features will the halls possess?

5] If the group hall really is more like a "group street", would players be able to have their own houses inside the "hall"? very curious about this.

6] the "lot" made it feel like completion would create a building, not a street sign. maybe that's just a placeholder system too?

anyway, everything present worked well and was fun. the placeholders were disappointing but it felt like all the basic mechanics work and provide a solid foundation for the group hall concept.

  • I didnt' get a chance to participate in this :(

    But...
    1 & 2: sound awesome
    3 & 6: I can see some potential problems
4: hopefully this will get changed like the option to customize interiors
5: that would be a really cool option!

Also, do the halls change appearances depending on where they are?  Example, cave style in heights, firebog style in swamps, etc?

  • I liked the mechanics of it for sure. It was pretty easy to get things done without getting all jammed up, and yeah, having communication was key to getting it done. I was a little bit disappointed not so much by the street-sign aspect as the "field with three machine-rooms" look we ended up with, but as Striatic said, that might just be a placeholder till things get rolling. Overall, I liked it.

  • I was actually happy to see a 'group street' rather than a simple building, as it seemed to imply more than a one time group event/project.

I would love to have the ability to start additional group projects to further extend this area outward. Additional private streets, housing and other features could be 'unlocked' as group projects complete.

Groups could also compete with each other, based on how much has been contributed to all of the projects within the group's area.

    The possibilites seem pretty exciting.

ETA: I want my own private mines (exempt from local, state and federal oversight).

  • regarding #5 .. i had always figured that players would have "apartments" inside group halls, but never considered individual houses.

maybe "Group Compound" is a better term than "Group Hall", even if it does sound a little bit Branch Davidian-y or Jonestown-esque or Heaven's Gate-ish.

  • @Joe Blow:  Yeah having a street as opposed to building is very very cool.  Nice if they added apartments too.  It would be really awesome if you could add as many features as your group could gather and just build a really badass street.

  • I hope that in the end the group "halls" will not be first come-first serve like they were in this test. That's not a very fair way to determine which groups get the hall. I realize this was an extremely rough test of it, though, and the end product will likely look nothing like what we saw here today.

If they stay the way they were today, with a separate street sign leading to each hall, then I'm not a fan. It will be even more confusing to navigate around when you have the additional worry of whether or not that street sign you're heading towards is privately owned. Also, there are potentially hundreds to thousands (or more?) groups that will want halls, and that will get very chaotic with them each littering the main streets. I had imagined something more like a particular area that people can go into that contains entrances to multiple group halls.

  • I almost feel bad saying this, but I was totally let down by the group hall preview... In my head I was picturing *huge multi-level castle* when I saw that it was an ordinary old sign that led to an ordinary old street, it just seemed kinda cheap to me. This is the only time I've felt let down by Glitch. That said, once the street is filled with buildings, I'm sure ill change my mind. I have faith ;-)

  • This was just super! Beta ending with a group street was more than I could ever have asked for. We were all so excited to have a place to hang out together, and party of course. I had heard that this is rough, and I do suspect that much more is coming our way. Whatever it is, apartments, or building out streets with housing, or even a big ol' communal barn for us all to "sleep" in,  I'm sure it will be in keeping with the look and feel of Glitch. We have a place that we built, and can be used by folk in the group, at least to meet up in and stash stuff. How cool is that?

  • the simplest way to deal with inactivity is to tuck the halls out of the way in the same way that houses are with the quarters.

i like that idea but it would be a bit of a let-down since the areas wouldn't be nearly as integrated into the game world.

hybrid idea might be to have the lots in residential quarters but after they are built out over time and get to a certain size, the group would be able to rent a proper sign on the main street.

  • Does anyone have a screen cap for the group hall? I would love to see it.

  • tbf it was a typical groddle forest street with 3 locked community machine rooms spread out across it. not much to see really.

  • Oh and I like the idea of being able to 'rent' the street sign.  There are sooo many groups, and too many sign posts would not be appealing to the eye
Posted 15 months ago by Laurali Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I do really think that group halls should probably have something like the resident hall signs, as awesome as seeing the full on street signs with names is.
Posted 15 months ago by Caesura Subscriber! | Permalink
  • also if you build your group's castle large enough it might be cool if it became visible on the main map and in landscape vistas kind of like The Tower.

something like that would require a group with 1000s of members and possibly an "anyone can enter the castle walls, just not the castle keep" policy/architecture.

  • Can I have a moat?  And man eating alligators to protect?  That would be awesome :)

  • I ended up missing out on the who group hall project, I had already littered the streets w/all of my belongings and came in one last time to see what was going on. I saw a group at a project, and then ended up leaving because I had no currants to buy new tools. I am looking forward to see what the "group halls" become.

  • +1 re: couches @serfer0. But then, my glitch would need to learn to sit. And while we're at it, can I PLEASE lay down in bed in my house when I leave the game? That is all. Thanks. Oh, and running. THAT is all.

  • This may not be feasible, but what about a housing-quarter-like sign listing the resident groups for when multiple groups want to claim the same street?

OOO! The business-y groups could claim a floor in an apartment tower!

+1 for moats. And the firebog houses totally need hammocks.

  • maybe the group halls and the street they are located on should all be dead ends so you'll never have to navigate through them.

or maybe im not understanding whats going on? im confused lol.
Posted 15 months ago by Tundra Subscriber! | Permalink
  • RF, they are all currently dead ends.

you might walk past the entry sign but you certainly can't travel through them to anywhere.
Posted 15 months ago by striatic Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm curious how entry will work for private and hidden groups, and if there will be requirements to have a certain number of members before a hall can be built.

Mostly I'm just ready to get going on building my account back up!  Open!  ;)

  • Sorry in advance, slight detour from topic: Was there/is there a staff thread that outlines the qualifications needed/process for creation of a Group Hall? I searched but haven't found one. If no staff thread can someone explain the process?

  • The castle thing seems too Warcrafty, but different designs than a regular street obviously seem ideal. Although we really made good use of the whole street space, I always imagined something more like a giant house... maybe ahaving all the groups rent space at Jethimadh Tower makes more sense..? You definitely can't deny there will be too many groups for one per street, unless this becomes a guild warfare game..?

  • Thank you Devs! It was good to see the initial community halls finally take shape, but I was surprised to see 3 machine rooms in our group hall area! I had expected to have a building where we could all meet and store/share/trade some items. Hopefully 2 of the machine rooms are just place holders for something better, and maybe we build them ourselves? Can we have gardens?

Please can we have some info as to how this will work? Is there a minimum requirement on the number of group members?  I saw that there was a time limit to finish but have no idea what the time limit was?

So many questions.. TS you gave us a lick of the candy and we barely got to taste it!

  • It would be rather nice to have a mailbox and mail dispenser in the group areas - please? =)

  • +1 Morticia, I like that idea.

Also, I really like the idea of garden areas as I love the bog houses but hate that I can't grow regular veggies there and vice versa if I had a house in Doom Way.  I found on many occassions that all the garden areas in the community areas were mostly all planted and items that took forever would be gone if you didn't stand right over top of them the entire time (had a devil of a time doing the onion quest).

I am looking forward to decorating items and hope that they are extended to include the group hall area and not just your house.

  • I admit I was a little upset to have not known about this.  I would have enjoyed working on it.  I did get to visit one though and it was beautifully done.  It was also fun to find a street with the Group name.  I walked all over Ur and only found two of them.  I must be terribly unobservant - Lol!

  • I loved the preview of the group spaces concept. God very clearly communicated that it was "very rough" and just a test. I would expect many changes as the concept evolves.

    Other feedback:
    1. The focus of a small group doing the build - Awesome, highly cooperative and very reminiscent of earlier street builds. The level of sharing and dashing for items with no regard to level or trophies or focus other than "get it built together" was something I had been missing on many of the more recent street builds.

    2. Loved the look of the street I helped build. The flush hues of the sky were fantastic. The rolling hill design was lovely.

    3. I don't recall seeing if the group streets would persist after reset and would love to know this.

Cheers to TS for getting this in for a rough test prior to reset. I'm excited for how this will play out in the future!

  • Brib...from another thread it seemed like there were only 10 for this past test...so, not that many, it sounded like.  I was at work and missed the building, etc.  but it indeed sounded like fun.  Look forward to having the opportunity to work on one in the future.

Yes, and we'd all like to know if the ones that were built will persist.
Posted 15 months ago by b3achy Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The ones from the last test will not persist — we were testing more for bugs than anything else. And these were more "group locations" than "group halls" (though we've done a lot of work on interiors for group halls, we've decided to put that aspect of it off until we have customizable houses: it is going to be a huge effort and we don't want to have to do redo it as soon as we finish in order to make them customizable).

Teena pointed out the ideas thread and I posted there to say that the kinds of resources in group-owned locations will be determined by upgrade projects with more than one option (e.g., build a bunch of patches for an orchard or build some plots for a garden).

As for houses or apartments inside group locations or group halls: we haven't decided yet. It gets a bit complicated!

As for special features that only group halls might have: things like "crafting altars" which boost production for specific kinds of crafting (the way machine rooms do now, but a general concept: could be for cooking, or tool making, etc.)

  • Thanks, stoot. Good to know.

And +1 for the "crafting altars"!

  • That's great Stoot, always good to know what's in the offing :)  I'm sure we are all happy to wait a bit and get the customizable housing sorted first. Crafting altars - nice!
