Thieves

I know it wasn't bright to let them in my house. They seemed really nice. They stole a bunch of stuff from me including over 10 emblems.

edit: I took the name out. I apologize for posting names and was unaware it was bad protocol. I try to be a good glitch. Happy Thanksgiving all.

  • Name-dropping isn't allowed on the forums, I believe.
Even if it was, it's just bad form to do so..

  • Sorry this happened to you, but letting unknown players in your house is asking for trouble. And indeed: It's better to file a report in private on stuff like this.
Posted 13 months ago by Niks Subscriber! | Permalink
  • second time i've seen this name mentioned in the forums, for the same thing

but naming names here is frowned upon, talk in help, block and report.
Posted 13 months ago by bogNobby Subscriber! | Permalink
  • If someone is doing something that is unreasonable and you want to warn other glitches not to fall for the same thing, why is it bad to let people know who you are talking about? If it was real life, I'd post their name all over the neighborhood.
Posted 13 months ago by Kashtana Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It will be edited by staff if you don't though, and nobody will know, use the help chat, global chat, and 'report' to make sure staff get the message, it's all you can do.
Posted 13 months ago by Nobbin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Ok, thank you nobbinobody. I did do that. Staff isn't doing anything.
Posted 13 months ago by Kashtana Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I don't understand why names can't be mentioned. Why shouldn't we be warned about these players? I know it's one persons side of the story, but with warning we can decide for ourselves.

Maybe after three proven reports a mod could post their names in a sticky thread. I know this will never happen, but wouldn't it be nice?
Posted 13 months ago by DragonBlack Subscriber! | Permalink
  • aye, I guess the warning not to let randoms in every now and then is no use if people aren't using the forums, maybe a warning when buying one's first house, in MASSIVE, flashing letters across the screen that can't just be clicked away, would be good.

Does seem odd given the 'be nice' ethos of Glitch that there are no repercussions though.
Posted 13 months ago by Nobbin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • To ONLY address why you can't "name names": Anyone can claim someone else is a thief or whatever. (TO BE CLEAR, I am NOT saying that is the case here, okay?) People could lie just to be mean. Slander, is what I'm saying. (Again, I am not making aspersions on this thread or any other particular thread.) Or it just turns into a flame war. These issues are between the participants when it really should be decided personally between the participants and staff.

But (and I don't actually recommend this) nothing is stopping you from telling your friends through private channels.
Posted 13 months ago by Lord Bacon-o Subscriber! | Permalink
  • As to repercussions: Staff does handle things... but we also don't want to world of Glitch to turn into witch hunt central. Glitch wants to FOSTER a be nice ethos... but they don't want to make it a police state of Stepford Wives.
Posted 13 months ago by Lord Bacon-o Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I mod another game, we don't allow this either. One big reason is the other game is geared toward tweens and up. They haven't learned restraint to the degree we adults should have learned.

So I do know people would/will lie if they are annoyed with someone. This is the second time this name has been brought up as a thief. When do the honest ones get a warning? Or better yet, when are they going to get the boot?

I do agree about letting no one in your house. My spouse is the only person to ever visit me, and I didn't give them a key.

  • Glitch has a policy against naming names in the forum, and this is a sensible policy for reasons other have described.  Glitch does not have a player reputation system (i.e. where players can rate other players), and that's understandable as it is difficult to design a reputation system that cannot itself be abused.  When abuse is reported, Glitch does not reveal what actions were taken by staff, and this also is a sensible policy.  As a consequence of these policies, each understandable and sensible by itself, Glitch has no way for players to know whether the past behaviour of other players has been cooperative or uncooperative.

I would like to be able to invite passing players into my Glitch home as a way of getting to know them.  However, I know that doing so would make me vulnerable to theft. I have collectors and feeders in my yard, and it would be a pain to pick all these up and put them in my cabinet every time someone knocks at the door.  Also, I have items I've dropped in my home and yard for decorative purposes.  They aren't valuable items, but getting them positioned to look right took some effort. It might promote social interaction if there were a way to lock-down items before allowing another player into one's home.

Research on multi-player games (albeit much simpler games than Glitch) has shown that, given a choice between being cooperative vs. being uncooperative, most players will begin by being cooperative.  However, as players experience uncooperative behaviour from others, the overall level of cooperative behaviour declines unless players are able (1) to engage in tit-for-tat (as described by Anatole Rappaport) or (2) to have information about other players' past behaviour and to choose with whom to interact based on that.  The alternative to providing such methods for sanctioning is to reduce opportunities for uncooperative behaviour by design.

  • This is a tough issue.  I wholeheartedly endorse the idea of not calling out in the forums as it can be incorrect or a witch hunt.

In this case, I was with Kashtana at a party shortly after the theft.  I had just come down from a housing street where I had seen this individual.  He said to me that he was looking to buy a house in the neighborhood (a fully sold out quarter BTW).  I recognized his name from an earlier, since edited, thread, so I put him off.

We were at a street party, which is by definitition open to the public, and that was our intent - a public party.  This individual came to the party and picked up everything on the street,  And he would not leave, despite being called out by Kashtana and many others.  I asked him to leave twice.  He continue to try to engage people in conversation but not once replied to questions from players about the theft and kept picking up everything off the street.

It was very odd - he was involved in local chat, so he knew what people were saying, but he just kept going about his business picking stuff up and asking questions.  Like I said, very odd.

We kept up the party even though he would not leave.  He might even be in some of my party pictures (I did not look for him).   We had fun, and maybe even he did.  But I made a lot of new friends and I am pretty sure he did not!  And I did not give him a piglet to take home, as I did to anyone else who wanted one. :)

  • owly I agree, I wish we could warn each other about thieves.  This happened to me and I wonder if it was the same player??  Either way there *needs* to be more severe punishment for thieves.  Please devs?  :c

  • You can always private message the originator of the post to find out the name.  That is how it should work.
Posted 13 months ago by Parrow Gnolle Subscriber! | Permalink
  • If it is who I suspect, this person was selling an unusual amount of emblems a little while ago and earlier in the evening was snatching ALL the food at a public gathering and ignoring politely-worded requests to not be so annoying.

It is not cooperative behavior, to be sure.

  • I'll be blunt. If you had shared the name and some glitch-psycho who read it decided to back trace their IP and could've assaulted/murdered them, then the liability would go on both you, and TS. Don't screw up, don't post names.
Posted 13 months ago by Rook Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Rook - you really thing that's a real threat?

Err...by that logic, any psyo could do that to any of just because they can.
Posted 13 months ago by MeherMan Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think this thread just jumped the shark
Posted 13 months ago by Nobbin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Meherman, it's not an active threat, it's a possibility.
Posted 13 months ago by Rook Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I don't think that's a primary concern, but it's also a concern that someone names someone who did them a wrong, and a mob of concerned Glitchizens will suddenly go after them. It's human nature, I think, especially in a community like this where everybody likes to think we're all going to be nice to each other all the time, to want to punish people who don't act in line with that. But harassing someone who harassed someone else isn't a productive activity, and it's technically "griefing" which is specifically against the community guidelines.
Posted 13 months ago by HeyHeyHolly Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Kashtana reported him via the in-game process.  The devs have access to the logs. We need to leave it to the TS staff - there is no question they have demonstrated their commitment to Glitch.  They are not obligated to inform the public about what action they take.  I am sure they will take it seriously and take appropriate action.  I am sure none of us want to start a posse.

and MererMan - it is a very unlikely threat.  But as this is just a game and there is no reason to take even that very unlikely risk.
Posted 13 months ago by Kookaburra Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Thats some imagination you have there Rook. I think thats a bit on the far to extreme scale of what would actually happen in the scenario of posting a name on the forum. I would put that on the bottom of my list of concerns in this case. A psychopath or someone with a similar mental condition is highly unlikely to pursue a game avatar, also it would be unlikely they could accurately find said person in a timely manner. The logistics of that ever happening are slim to none. Further the liability would actually not be on tinyspeck in that scenario, it would be on the person actually committing the crime. The game cannot be responsible for the actions of a player when it occurs outside the game. That would be like saying Facebook is responsible for every picture or status update someone posts, slanderous or mild, websites and businesses cannot assume all the responsibility and liability for each and every thing a person freely does, at some point the responsibility has to shift to the person's actions. That scenario just doesn't work.

I do think however names should be left off the forums and handled privately because the reality of it is simply we do not know both sides of the story. We have not seen proof, we have no information to confirm or deny this even happened. I am not saying it didn't happen, but this is not a courtroom, the people on this thread are not the judge or jury. Everyone has a right to privacy, the game is fully capable of handling the matter behind closed doors and I'm sure it will be dealt with in the right manner. I'm sorry this happened wish the best possible resolution comes from it being reported through the proper channels.

  • Ah, the same thing happened to me. It's unlikely you'll get your stuff back, because when you let them in you know they'll have access to your cabinets and stuff.
My thief tried to deny stealing the emblems, but it's pretty obvious when their profile had the spent first emblem badges. XD
Thankfully, other glitches were nice and sent me some of their spare emblems to make up for the ones I lost. <3

    @Topic
I sympathize with your loses Kashtana. I too am quite curious as to who these Glitchen are who are so anti-social. Could I bother you to send me the name via frogmail?

  • why on urth would you let a stranger into your house?

they stole stuff? no kidding|? wow, that's a shocker.
Posted 13 months ago by flask Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I've had many, many strangers in my house. Only one has stolen anything. When playing Glitch, I (and the majority of people who play it alongside me) do it in the spirit of goodwill. Sure, you can have my bag full of emblems... If you promise to give it back after you've gotten the badge. All your musicblock collection? Why, thanks!
So, if a stranger were to come knocking on my door, I wouldn't mind letting them in. I'll presume they're part of the 99% of players I've met who have no ill intention.
And when you get down to it, it's just a bunch of pixels on a screen.
Posted 13 months ago by Rammi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm not too sure, but I think they don't allow names because it is possible for two players to have the same names. Or names that sound similar (or look similar at first glance). Or if the offensive player does leave, there is a chance that a new (and friendly) player can take the same name. Besides, anyone can change their name in Glitch, so putting up names can be useless in the long run. And I do hope any namesake of mine is not doing anything foolish in the game.

  • For what it's worth, this scam is actually a problem in real life as well.  A group of perps will show up on your doorstep asking to use the phone or bathroom.  Once inside they split up and cause minor disturbances while anyone not in your immediate presence cases rooms for easily stolen items such as jewelry, phones or even cash.

  • Thank you all for your discussion. I'm sure the devs have good reasons for what they do and I have full faith in them. In this situation, there was nothing that could be done. There are spent emblems on their profile just after the theft which, like Rammi, is proof enough. However, I am not here to grief anyone. Even those that have griefed me. I was angry and didn't know the rule about not posting names in the forums. I have since been gifted all my emblems back by wonderful glitches and continue to have a great time here.

If you really want to hear my story, I am happy to share it privately. For me, it is in the past. I will continue to trust in glitch because the pixels are replaceable. I am much more cautious in real life, because my blood is not.

The devs are trying to make a game for enjoyment and profit. I appreciate their efforts and enjoy them as well. Keep it up!!

This! It seems this person has been named already doing this sort of thing and I always miss it! Oh well good thing I don't let anyone in my place! Sad really because this is creating antisocial behavior because otherwise we have no way to protect ourselves in our houses other than go around and pick everything up that is not nailed down before we allow visitors!
