Question about Whack Job (dead trees) badges

The Whack Job badges require you to cut down dead trees.

Which suits me just fine but for one thing: dead trees are rarer than... a rare thing.

Some thread suggested to use Tree Poison to just kill them, and this works wonders... yet you are supposed to cut down up to 1009 trees! Taking into account the poisoning time and the "guilt phase" that prevents you to use another potion for a while, this amounts to a disproportionate time needed to get these badges when compared to 99.9% of the other badges.

It just doesn't sound right to me... Am I missing something?

  • Kill your own backyard trees--no guilt penalty! And you can poison the tiny trees as long as they've "grown past the initial petting."

  • Yes, I combined getting the potions badge with getting the chopping down trees badges. I already had the seasoned bean badge but you could grind to all three badges at once.

I used a row of 5 in my front yard. No Guilt there. Poison, chop, plant, poison, chop, plant ......

As for disproportionate amount of time - have you tried going for the riding the subway badge? I will never ride the train again!

  • Tons of badges take a big time to earn! This one may just be a bit harder than some others :) But it's an ACHIEVEMENT! You gotta work to earn it! You can either poison purposely, or wait forever to find dead trees other people have left behind. Poisoning merely to get this badge is not unfair, in anyway, you're just working!

If it's too hard for you, give up, don't get the badge! If you're against poisoning, then this is one badge you don't want!

  • I think the Giants intended that you would be a glitch for years and years, and that some badges would happen while you are young, and some badges would happen when you are older.  Trying to get all the badges as soon as possible is like trying to grow up all at once.  Just play the game, do things and enjoy the journey.

  • I did the plant/poison/chop all my own trees method. Save the lumber... you will appreciate it for the furniture badges.

  • I just finished this series of badges, and not counting the time it took me to make all the poisons (a couple of months or so; wasn't really working on it though), it took me about ten hours or so spread over two days. Once you have 200 or so poisons, replace everything in your backyard with tree patches, and have 1k fruit tree beans (they're the easiest to make) handy. Go down the line planting, petting three times, then go back to the front and start poisoning. Ridiculously grindy, but not that bad.

  • I got this badge the hard way when we had the original housing. You can do it, just try not to lose the will to live halfway through :P

  • I'm working on the badge myself -- over half way through in fact. I agree that it is one of the grindier ones. I am using a set of 10 trees on my street, and I'll go through 10 sets (so 100 clearings) per poison session as a way to make respectable progress without boring myself to death.

Just don't forget to ride the subway while seasoning beans and brewing potions.

  • If you're grinding badges, you should make gas, bubble, allspice, and bean trees, and water, pet, and harvest them before you poision them. Then as your patches wear out, you will get the badges for restoring projects, and have the materials to restore patches handy. Two grinds for the grindiness of one!

Leave patches with live trees on them, and you can harvest again before you poison them the next time you start. Also, patches wear down faster with live trees (I think, although it might be my imagination, I haven't timed it).

  • Anybody have any tips for achieving the paper tree harvesting badge - i'm thinking i'll never get it!

  • There are maps of the paper tree layout of the AL's.
I use this one, made by Lx.

It's still seeming to take forever, but I'm not really as focused on grinding those as I have been on some other badges.

  • How can you possible follow that long a path on one trip to AL?

  • @Me - With patience, lots of bonuses from traps, and a couple of cards delaying Ancestral Nostalgia, I'd think...

  • Who says you have to do it all in one trip? You can only harvest each paper tree once per game day anyway. Leave right before your time runs out, then do the rest in a few minutes.

  • The AL is actually kinda overpowered now that you can go home, do some stuff, and pop right back in.

  • Well, it's nerfed now. Two weeks left, max.

  • It takes *forever*, but you can do it. I just got this badge about a week ago, and trust me, it felt awesome. Just have patience (and lots of materials to restore your patches)!
    Good luck!

  • I did that badge under the conditions of old housing :) And I can say it did in fact make me want to cry :)

  • Excuse me, but... I have just postponed the Whack Job grind for now, but I did try to poison a wood tree in my backyard - yet it died leaving no stump behind, but just some planks!

Is this a Wood tree prerogative, or every kind of tree requires you to be there to cut them down before they disappear?
Posted 4 months ago by Ayzad Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Wood trees become stumps on their own just from cutting it down to the point where you can clear it.  No other trees work this way.  The only way to clear an egg, bean, fruit, gas, spice, or bubble tree is to poison it and wait for it to die (a poisoned wood tree just dies leaving no stump to clear).
I don't think the wood trees count toward this even when it is clearable, but I've no proof or anecdotal evidence for this.

  • wood trees indeed don't count, because you are clearing a "living" tree in that case, not a dead one. :-)

  • there's an achievement for 111,111 jumps... you think that one is easy or takes just a few moments? of course not... or the one for 10,009 teleports... so yeah, better get to work :D

  • I might be in the minority here... but the badges don't really do it for me.. If I get them I get them... If I don't get them... eh... I think I've been on the subway about 4 times.... and generally at least these days use most of my teleports... Out to world for resources... back to /home to drop off and craft.... back to world for different stuff
