Test notes: 20 September!

This is it! You've been reset, and get to explore the world as new, one last time. If you can view with fresh eyes, we'd love to know what you think. We will be open for just a couple days, through about 3:30 on Thursday. (We'll post the closing time as we approach it- and we tell time by San Francisco and Vancouver clocks- check timeanddate.com for your part of the world.)

What's new in this test?

-New loading screen with helpful tips provided by many of you!

-Occasionally, when a Sparkly, Beryl or Dullite rock is depleted and respawns, it will have more rock to mine. Moar rock!

-Skill learning times have increased a bit, and some have extra pre-requisites.

-XP from donations now has a daily limit.

-We’ve added over 100 new achievements. The values of some existing achievements as well as how you earn them have been adjusted.

-The game is now capped at 60 levels, and there are extra XP and currant “bumps” when you reach levels 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60.

-We’ve implemented a new and more efficient way for the game client to render locations (streets, items on them, and the backgrounds you see) -- and you should see faster loading times.

And as always, many, many bug fixes!  Thanks again for all your awesome feedback throughout the testing.

Play on!

  • Had a blast. I think the turotial will be really helpful for new players. The tips on the opening page are also really nice.

I did get frustrated at times with all of the pop ups. Multiple messages would take over the screen. It was especially irritating when I was mining or milking butterflies. Of course this could have been my own doing trying to do everything at once.

I am not liking the limits. Once I met my daily limit of coins and shrine donations at the lower levels I was unable to do anything. After the energy problem was licked at the higher levels I would get bored. In both situations, I found myself leaving the game until a new day would start.

  • Please, can we have a rationale for a level 60 cap? I understand that it will now be SUPER hard to get up to level 60 at all, but thinking in the long haul (as in, after I've been playing glitch for a couple years, haha) it will be so sad to real level 60 and just be... done. I understand it if you don't make new skills or new quests for level 60+, but it would be nice to know that my level number would keep going up the longer I played. It feels sort of like an achievement, even without quests/skills/in-game rewards.

I love the other changes, though.

ETA: huh, part of my comment got deleted somehow. Anyway what I said first was "I wish shrine donation limit was higher, my EHSP is pretty useless now with the big gems when I want to speed my skill learning" and "wow the rube appears a lot, it's more convenient but doesn't feel as special as it used to when he was rare"

  • I really enjoyed starting over until I had to massage and milk those damn butterflies! You give the little critters a nice relaxing massage with some really smooth lotion and then when you go to milk the buggers, they fly off on you....*sigh*....oh well.
I applaud TS for all their hard work, I had zero flash crashes, no bad lag to mention, love the new start up screen and especially love the pickle scream, I laugh every time I hear it! Keep up the great work guys! Thanks!

  • That was great fun. I'm going to agree with those who don't like the street change sound but the level 60 cap doesn't bother me at all.

  • For me, the butterflies came closer after being massaged usually, so milking them was easier this time - aside from dealing with nameless critters.

  • That was so fun!  And really great to get to start from the beginning again and use what we've learned in Alpha and Beta testing.  I think that was a great advantage.  As far as game play, I had NO lag, loading times were fantastic, and I love the extra badges.  It's also great to have quests again.... I had run out for such a long time.  I am in agreement with the star on the map - not a big issue, but if I had my preference, the star would not be there.  Rube came and talked to me a couple of times, so that made me very happy!!  All in all it was a perfect test... except that work got in the way of play!  Oh well, that will be fixed for the most part when we go live.
Just want to express my thanks, again, for all your hard work and creativity!  You've given us a great place to play together and I'm honored that I got to be a small part of making Glitch what it is.  Thanks so much!!

  • My character would freeze or become stuck and unable to move when there was a lot going on in an area, ie: lots of glitchlings running about on the same street etc.

I also wonder why there is a cap on levels?

Not one inanimate object or non-humanoid form spoke to me about the way things were in different ages this time around.  I'm hoping that ongoing story will come back it was weird and fun.

  • Loved seeing Rube more, love love love the new achievements (more to chase, yay!), though I'm lost on why Besara, Muufo and Tamila have no completionist badges (naturally, without looking, I chose those three regions to start! :P). Aranna I can see since it's not finished, but those three? Unless they are getting sub stations or machine rooms maybe? I liked the location change sound but my thought on that was: Why not only have it when you hit a street that is new to YOU? In other words, the audio can go along with the visual notices that this is your first visit. Then gradually it would go away. Just a thought.

Way less lag for me this test. Way less. Yay!

I don't care so much about the XP caps on donating except for the pop-up screen appearing over and over...how about a one-time warning or a small notice up top left where all the other notices go? But the cap makes sense since you guys have been balancing out ways to level up; last test before this I was thinking, well the only really easy way to level up now is to donate like mad. So now that has been equalized. More work for us:) But I see why.

On the level cap: I don't understand this at all either, even if it takes longer to reach because of all the balancing. After all...we have achievements, we have leaderboards...clearly, you know some folks enjoy those type of game aspects: competing, leveling up. Of course a lot of those new achievements are cooperatively based, which is fun too (conga trains, TPing people all over, street project helping, etc.). And sooooo much of this game is about just enjoying, discovering, socializing, playing. And I love that as well. And I LOVE helping out just as much as competing. But I'm not seeing why limit that aspect for those who enjoy it...? Now watch, stoot will come here and explain it to us brilliantly (as with the reasons behind the no-no nerfing (sob, I get them but sob)). *begins waiting to hear what the master plan is on the level cap....*

  • I loved this test, but I discovered that the chromebook (my brother is in the beta) does not have the guts for the game to run decently. I was very sad, but I think I'll make it.
Posted 15 months ago by Lady Cailia Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Was the level cap just so that we beta testers don't all get to level GAZILLION before Glitch goes live and open? since there might still be a few tests, and we all know how competitive some players are when it comes to leveling..... -just saying

  • I loved the test - the tutorial in the beginning was great.  It was nice to come into the big wide world with my pockets half full!

My one note is that I felt overwhelmed with quests (crazy right?).  Granted, when you get a new skill every half hour, it makes sense that you have a quest to go with it.  But some of the seemingly unrelated quests like the digging and the peat quest - maybe they should wait a little longer?

  • From the facebook page "The test has come to a close. Newly named piggies are sleeping in their pens, and butterflies wonder when they'll be massaged again. Their wings won't ache for long. There is another, and it will open Monday."

  • I haven't had any problems this test, before I had to keep switching between IE and Chrome, when it froze. Found it very hard just living on pork chops to start with, always out petting and nibbling, just to keep my energy up. Where are the Butterflies? think I will have fill my little house with them, not enough around to keep up with making butter & cheese I need for the quests. Rube gave me a bit of a shock when I opened my door, he was right in the doorway, wasn't expecting that.

  • I had a good time and enjoyed all the tiny changes. i also really enjoyed settling in groddle meadow for the first time. i never took the time to appreciate the place before. it's beautiful!

one thing i really seriously wish I'd considered was the pointlessness of mining iii, before I'd started learning it. it was so dumb, i only even started it because it was my longest available skill - so stupid!

anyway, looking forward to next test.

you level cap fretters - usually caps imply that the devs have designs on future content. they think the future (possibly also the current) game will be too easy at level 100, so we are capped until such content is ready. it does seem a little odd in Glitch, given so little indication that level really matters. but have some faith, geez, or at least wait until youre close to lvl 60 to assume you know what's best for game balance...

  • I'm sure some of the things I say have been already said, and will be said again.

    Region completest badges: Thumbs up

Caps on levelling (thought I think I only made it to 14 after all was said and done) and shrine donation: thumbs down.

I think there are many people will agree with me:
What makes this game good now, and the potential for greatness in the future, is the open endedness of it.

People should be able to go as far as they want, and spend/donate as much as they want.

I think more time should be spent on creating quests, not limiting the game and the players.

  • "People should be able to go as far as they want, and spend/donate as much as they want.

    ."

Couldn't have said it better myself!  But, other than this (which doesn't affect me very much right now) I loved most of the changes.

I could do without the star moving around the map when it first opens and (as someone else said) it seems like the special rewards should occur on the prime levels in keeping with the rest of the game.  They wouldn't be that far from the 10's.

  • Quests just for the sake of quests seems silly to me.

My feelings on the cap and shrine capping and generally slowing things down: 100% thumbs up.

For me, Glitch really starts to shine when you get past the "Ack! So much to do! I can level up so quickly! Must get to the next reward!" stage. It is when it slows down a bit and you take a moment to just look around and interact. For me that happened around level 28 or 30 or something.

Up to now, with tests in bits and pieces, and accelerated leveling rate made a certain amount of sense. Once the game goes, some folks will end up leveling even quicker. Not minute by minute, but month to month. At the old rate and old shrine workings, folks COULD have reached level 60 in now time. Sure, an argument could be made that would be their choice. But then the argument could be made why not have a button that instantly advanced you up. Of just have levels straight up purchasable for currants.

Pacing things a bit more leaves a bit more breathing room. Also increases the challenge. Yes, challenge is good.

But why would a cap be good? Well, they will be able to add to content only so fast. If they add "high level" quests or whatever, they'll want to have a it more time build it and make it worthy. If they say want a level 70 quest but by the time they get to it they have 100s of players at level 150... well, it might lose all meaning. This way they can control the pacing.

I honestly don't think it is a big dealeo. At level 60 your energy/mood takes will be PLENTY large. 2,800 or so? (The only level caps I hate are ones that cap skill learning. Grrrr. Hate that. Curse you, Fallout!)

  • I had a lot of trouble with lag when moving between streets this last test.

Also had trouble with a little pop up that came up whenever I ate telling me I was getting a little full, no matter how close to death I was.  A staff member came to me and asked if it had stopped and though I had not noticed - it had - we were both pleased.  Five minutes later it returned lol.

Have to say it - I am so NOT a fan of the new level cap.

What I am SO a fan of is our lovely pickle - oh oh oh I just Love the pickle :)

  • Because I live in the mines most of the time.,I found it very difficult to start right off in the mines to get anywhere current wise, I don`t care for the leveling at all I just enjoy being at the play with a challenge. But must admit with the great loss of mood (needing drink and food) being so expensive for say chilly.it took for ages   to even save 2000 currents.I run two avatars at once, one for hubby and one for me.When he can play he loves it but does not have the time from work to enjoy his avatar so I try to help, the mood loss really affected me this time. Getting a Teleport really helped with level two east for food, but having to buy milk from Auction, thank you to all who sell milk cheap for us guys that like to stay in a place we feel good at.The challenge was good only now with both avatars at 10 level is it getting currents, and working very hard to get there with the mood loss. I feel like I just got a hamburger after starving for ten days.not a lot of currents because you always need to fill shrines or buy chilly,I love this slow down process, never was the kind of person to care for leveling to beat someone not my cup -o-tea.leveling helps for some things and for others not so good, don`t want to get bored here after three months so slow is good,I take the time and relax with the fun of the game.Having also not a lot of time to be in game all the time  helps to slow down. Before the reset I was totally bored.I do wish though for a few folks in the mines Be Nice,Play Nice.

  • Loads of changes, good and bad.
    Love:
    How quick streets load,
The new open screen shot and game tips,
    My beta toy,
    Fewer animals,
Rube has returned with better trades,
    Completion badge for different areas,
More hurdles for learning new skills,
    Tutorial very clever.

    Hate:
    Losing thermometer on opening screen,
    Cap on levels,
    Daily donation limits,
    Everyone "having" to mine together,
    Lower levels of XP,
Information regarding, smuggler, pickle, ghosts, new music boxes and?,
cheese falling out of inventory when being converted from butter,
    Getting disconnected so often.

Staff has done an excellent job fixing bugs while making so many new changes.

  • This test was much more buggy for me than previous ones have been. My meter would say I should have leveled and it waited until I'd earned an additional 1,000 xp before I actually went up a level. The Cold Comfort quest never worked for me. I tried multiple times, successfully meditating in the Wintry Place but it never counted on my quest log. This is thru multiple page refreshes and different hours in the test.

When I asked about it in Live Help no one was very helpful this time. :/ That part made me the most sad I think because I frequently hang out in Live Help purely because I like the people there. I also enjoy being able to help others when I can and it's typically a very comfortable place to be. This time I ended up closing the chat box before too long.

I also go stuck at one point. This actually cracked me up. I was suspicious at first when I played with my pickle and got the Teleport dialogue but only went across the street. Shortly thereafter I tried to teleport to one of my saved locations only to lose the energy but go nowhere. Again, I sucked it up and walked over to the train. It took my currants twice but never let me on the train. A restart did fix that one, but it was pretty funny to be trapped on the other side of the world.

Overall great test though Devs! I love the new loading screen and the game (save some glitches) seems to be running better. I can't wait for it to open for real and I feel so lucky to have gotten to be part of the beta process!

Also, thank you for quieting the new street sound. I always felt like I'd done something wrong when I heard it!

  • Loved so much new in this test - the music, sound effects, tips on the opening screen, many appearances of the Rube (has he been on holiday or something?) and in general a much slicker appearance. Looking good for release I say! I didn't find any major bugs really, but maybe one point - the ghost quest was so much more fun last time because we didn't know where they were. Now not only are the locations known but there are even screen shots of the exact location within a street. Maybe they should move to somewhere different just to up the challenge again :-)

  • what is the reason for the cap at level 60? Surely that will put people off playing when they reach level 60.
Posted 15 months ago by Malupin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @FlirtyvonSexenhaven: You said, "you level cap fretters - usually caps imply that the devs have designs on future content. they think the future (possibly also the current) game will be too easy at level 100, so we are capped until such content is ready. it does seem a little odd in Glitch, given so little indication that level really matters. but have some faith, geez, or at least wait until youre close to lvl 60 to assume you know what's best for game balance..."

Never said I didn't have faith; I think I'd just like to hear a rationale 'cause it seems odd, is all, in a game where we have leaderboards and such. Also, nope not "assuming" I know what's best for game balance. Am wondering about it is all. I'm actually having faith and assuming that they will explain it at some point since TS has been so fabulous at replying when we all have questions on a similar theme :) We shall see:)

@Avery834: Awww, that is a bummer about Live Help :( I think Live Help was pretty full and crazy, and everyone was trying to get their game going and help but so much was going on, I know we lost track of things here and there in LH. Take heart! I think stuff will have settled down by next test and things will be more helpful again. So sorry your stuff went unanswered!

  • @Violet: I wouldn't worry about the cap until you get closer to it. It my be raised by the time anyone gets close to it.
Posted 15 months ago by BarryW Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @RM it was pretty crazy in there, so I don't hold it against anyone! I still love all the friends I've got in LH and will hang out there again. It was just a bit frustrating since I can't bug report stuff from my computer (old operating system & not enough memory to update everything that needs to be updated... which doesn't always help matters). I, foolishly, kept going back to Wintry Place to try again and again but never had anything add to the quest log countdown.  Hopefully Monday I can crank it out and have it count! :)

  • @ BarryW + Violet Quick question. Has anyone been keeping track of the amounts of exp we're needing? If the formula for leveling has changed along with the donation limit then it might be a LONG LONG time before anyone's anywhere near sixty.

Even with the old formula it was increasing exponentially.
