Shrine Donation Quest NEEDS Update.

Speaking on behalf of a student at the Art Institute Game Design Program, this donation quest sucks, especially for noobs.

1) The first rule of game design is the player is always right. If something is too hard, change it. If something takes them out of the adventure of playing, change it. If something stalls the flow of the game, change it.
2) A new player will nearly kill themselves to gather the amount resources needed to donate to a shrine. Being confused at first i donated anything i could spare to one shrine. Realizing that that 0/5 had not gone up i went to mine 50 ore. Only after nearly killing my energy level for the ore did the 0/5 go up to 1.
3)Now I'm broke, have no energy to gather materials, and the experience of this game went from adventurous to time consuming tedious.

As a "Game Designer" and player i suggest this quest be changed. Perhaps from 32 points down to 15. Make the less meaningful items worth more points or even change the five shrines to 3.

  • You don't have to do the quests immediately. You can always wait until you have more resources before donating.

  • Also, this quest went from requiring 100 favor to 23 favor since it was introduced :p
Perhaps it should be at 100 again, to encourage the idea that it doesn't have to be done all at once, right away.

  • "The first rule of game design is the player is always right."

As someone who's also involved in game design, I have to disagree with this, or at least your interpretation of it. I had no issues with this quest personally, nor have I ever had any issues with energy as a whole. While your experience with the quest has clearly not been so successful, not everyone else is having the same sort of issues, and as someone who's donated thousands of favor worth of items in the past couple of days I can say that 23 favor is incredibly inconsequential. Sure, it's not exactly clear how much favor you can expect per item, etc. but Glitch is largely about exploration, so I think the fact that not everything is spelled out is part of the game's charm.

I mean no offense in saying so, but I think part of your issue with the quest may spring from the fact that your skills are extremely spread out. I moved heavily into gardening and green thumb skills, and in doing so I had a very easy time being self-sustaining. For 5 energy I can gather 30 energy worth of eggs from an Egg Tree, not to mention that my skills allow me two gathers per tree., so each tree nets me a total of 50 energy gain. This allowed me to gather tons of items to donate, and made the shrine donation quest pretty painless overall. The sooner you move into skills deeper down the skill tree, the easier getting by will be, so I think spreading yourself thin has hurt you.

Overall, I think the quest is fine. Perhaps it'd be in your best interest to re-evaluate the way you're doing things, rather than finding issue with the quest itself.

  • +1 Alex

Anyway, the quest could be given two or three levels later with no harm...

  • Makes sense. They've probably gained a huge amount of game metrics data since release, and could use that to adjust this quest if there's a large amount of failure/frustration.

    1. Determine when 5x 230C value objects becomes a reasonable portion of wealth (given a degree holder's definition of "reasonable") for Glitchen.

    2. Set quest at that level.

  • I was a beta tester and got to level 27 before the reset and that was actually one of the last quests I completed before the reset.  It doesn't have to be finished right away or in a day or a week or even a month...its just something that will happen eventually.  I think that's kind of the point of it, that we don't always get immediately rewarded. Thats what makes this game a bit different.  I mean, how many games have you played where you actually have to WAIT in a waiting room for someone to talk to you? LOL.
I think the big issue today is that many younger people are so used to instant gratification and have no patience.  Another site I play on has a monthly quest where they hide an object and whomever finds it wins coins.  The quest is live for about 10 hours before the forum is bombarded with "hints please" and "time for a hint" threads.  Its silly really.  I would rather not have a hint until 3 weeks have gone by and the next quest needs to start soon.
"When will then be now?"  "Soon".

  • I think the quest needs simplifying, it is just too difficult to do as you can't remember which ones you've donated to and the 0/5 doesn't move until you donate enough, then when it's 4/5 and youre not sure which giants you donated to you could waste a lot of stuff doing the wrong one.

  • I think more feedback on which giants you've donated to is useful (we mentioned that in another thread on the same topic). Aside from that, I think there's a more important point about players realising that quests don't need to be completed immediately - - and that, in fact, sometimes they *cannot* be completed immediately.

  • Premise 1: "The first rule of game design is the player is always right."
Premise 2: I am a player of this game.
Premise 3: I believe this quest does not come remotely close to being too hard.

Conclusion: This quest does not come remotely close to being too hard.

  • I had the OP's experience with the quest my first time. It didn't occur to me to "be patient" because I had been playing Glitch for maybe two hours and had not yet realized that unlike every other game I've ever played where quests reward you with things you need to grow and improve, Glitch's quests are more like ackowledgment of that growth.

I am not a game designer but Glitch's questing model is somewhat different from other games. I had a much better experience after the reset simply ignoring the quests and having them complete themselves randomly.

  • Funny reading this, this is my 2nd go-around with this quest and I was actually annoyed that it was lowered from 100. It was simple to do, only because you don't *have* to focus on it. Even in the play of the game and other quests, you'll wind up hitting the goal. It seems to not matter what you do in the game, as some interactions will give favor points to a random giant.

    Relax. It's not that serious.

I think this quest is just to get you used to the idea of donating to the giants and seeing your favor points move it. It's great for what it is.

  • The worst part about this quest is not knowing which giants you have fulfilled the requirements for, and which you have not, and what levels each are at.  It took me FOREVER to complete this because I was not able to keep track of how much I had given to each giant, so I spread too thinly and donated to too many of them.  But yeah, it's an overall lousy quest.

  • Couple valid points with this one. They were mentioned above but I want to draw them out:

    1) Not clear how much favor an item generates when it's donated. I know that it's 1/10 of its value, but that is NOT obvious to anyone who hasn't been around long. This should probably be on an item's info page along with its currant value. I've also seen that question asked numerous times in Live Help and Global Chat.
    2) No way to see which shrines you've donated to and your current favor with each Giant. This is a huge issue. Yeah, there's a Greasemonkey script--I installed it and not only did I find it to be out of date (for some reason, it only seems to update itself every few hours), but it shows the total amount of favor you've EVER had with a giant, not your current favor. In other words, it's useless. There needs to be a page somewhere where you can see your current favor with every Giant.

  • @MacKenzie

    1) Two ways to find out how much favor generates when it's donated.
    a) It tells you.
    b) Click on "Check favor" before and after you make a donation.
    2)
a)Pen and paper, or notes on your computer to remember which Giants you've donated to.
    b) When you are at a shrine, click on "Check favor" to find out how much you've donated.

These don't keep track of automatic donations, except the checking of your favor at a shrine.

PS: I don't even remember this quest. But I've collected emblems for nine of of the gods.

  • This quest actually completes pretty much on it's own if you keep it in mind and toss stuff into shrines as you're passing. Well for me anyway. There's no time limit, so it works into the game rather well I thought.

And as a non game designer, I'd also like to state the player is not always right.

  • There is only one valid point made in this entire thread: it would be significantly more convenient to see which Giants you've completed 23-point donations to.

    Yup, I said only one.

The player cannot always be right, because as players, we disagree a lot.  (As exhibited above.)

It's not because of youth or a lack of patience--but rather a lack of understanding (I'm 25, definitely part of the "get it now" generation, and yet I had no issue with this quest.  I figured it would happen when it would happen.  Once I understood what I had to do--and asked some questions of friends I made--I figured it out, completed the quest, &tc.).

I'm sorry, Walla Walla (hey, are you from Washington?!  I'm in the 'Couv!), but I don't feel bad for your being broke.  A new day will begin soon, and you'll receive new life, and be able to start all over.  Hopefully you'll have learned something about the gameplay.

I actually envy those of you who had to complete this quest when it was 100 favor points.  That might have been a bit of a challenge, comparatively speaking.
