/bollywood command

This deserves its own ideas thread. The Cat Face, Rook, and WalruZ cooked up the idea in another thread about commands. You can read the origins of the idea starting here: www.glitch.com/forum/genera...

Essentially, typing /bollywood would summon some npc glitchen to allow you to perform a rousing, spectacular musical dance number, Bollywood-stylee. So that all of Ur doesn't become one giant movie set, this could be a special command limited to party packs (or perhaps a special party pack?). WalruZ suggested being able to perform at a party with a friend by typing /bollywood {name} in local chat, so you could dance together, backed by other party attendees. They worded it better than I, but that's the gist of it.

We need this. We really do. (And at the very least, contemplating this has me grinning like a maniac and wanting to caper over hillsides, followed by 30 of my closest friends who just happen to be out for a walk with me.)

  • It is difficult for me to say exactly how I would feel if the /bollywood command was added to Glitch.

Therefore I have gone to great personal expense and produced this epic film extravaganza to show how I would feel if the /bollywood command becomes a reality:

  • If anyone else wants to make a movie of how they feel about the /bollywood command you can do that right here: www.grapheine.com/bombaytv/...

Then post a link to your response in this thread so we can all see!

  • It would have to ask permission first - like following does. But other than that I would be 100% behind this idea. How fun it would be to see Glitchen dancing around in style!

  • To that we should add /riverdance and /thriller.
    And probably /shuffling.

  • YES!!!!  /bollywood especially, though I'm quite partial to /bennyhill as well.  (I have a bad feeling the Jackson estate would take /thriller away...)

My Sari and Dancin Shoes are ON! I'm ready for /Bollywood

If this leads to other dances I'm up for that too.
I'd love to enter a street and see glitches dancing like mad. :D

Agree that it's a good idea to ask permission like we do for following.

  • I could absolutely get behind /bhangra. Or /bennyhill.
Though I still dig /bollywood as a first choice, implausible as it may be.

  • /bollywood, /bhangra, and /bennyhill are the new /bears, /beets, /battlestar galactica

  • Alternate implementation. Get people to follow you, then type /bollywood for an all-PC cast!

    (Also, I approve.)

  • Yes plz!  I particularly like the idea of the "routine" involving anyone following you, so there is a kind of opt-in to the dance par-tay.

  • glitch avatars aren't very animatable, by their construction. we don't have animations for mining, let alone dancing, so the first bit is figuring out what glitch dancing looks like.

the easiest form is probably hopping, at a lower minimum height than jumping in order to differentiate.

probably best to start with a "/dance" verb to figure out these issues and establish expectations for how much dancing a glitch avatar is capable of.
Posted 9 months ago by striatic Subscriber! | Permalink
  • striatic--agreed! There are a limited number of animation at present, which definitely constrain the possibilities. WalruZ and I tried an experiment last night that involved little more than following and jumping around in circles, and it was still pretty silly and fun. Perhaps throwing in a couple of the freeze-frame poses used in the 'dance with' option from the 'We're off to see the Lizard' quest and maybe that'd be enough to delight and amuse.

Realistically, an idea like this would be a long time coming, if at all, but your suggestions give a silly concept a firmer foundation on which to build.
Posted 9 months ago by Voluptua Sneezelips Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I can't remember where I read it, but somebody posted a technical explanation of how avatar animation is handled in Glitch. Basically, it involves pre-loading a huge "sheet" with all the movement cells in it.

Unfortunately, bollywooding would probably require huge additional resources being downloaded and stored for each user (everyone's avatar is customized!). It's like to be a big resource-hog, and laggy as all get-out.

I love the idea, but wouldn't hold my breath on this one.
