Thinking of stopping my skill advancement -- am I crazy?

I've gotten the skills I wanted and now I'm left with a bunch of skills that I'm not sure I want. Bog Specialization? Feh. Eyeballery? Whatever.

I'm considering just stopping instead of finishing up all my skills on the theory that TS *may* at some point introduce more skills and I may be happier having fewer skills under my belt rather than skills I don't need or want.

Is that stupid?

  • Nope, not stupid at all. If you're happy with the Glitch you've developed, then why bother with things you're not interested in?

Have you finished up Better Learning? What about Mining or the Animal Kinship and Gardening routes? Those are the ones I'd recommend.

  • I'm done with BL, Mining, AK, Gardening.

I've got MC2, but I skipped some of the other cooking skills, on the theory that once I can make the high energy foods, I never go back and make the low energy foods.

I skipped all the alchemy stuff because I always found it more convenient to buy EHSP or whatever than to make it. For similar reasons, I skipped refining, etc.

I've skipped a lot of stuff, which is why I'm wondering if I'm being silly.

  • Not silly, you're just developing your Glitchen the way you like.

You'll also have less of that cumulative time penalty when new skills are released that you want to learn.

  • I would rather be able to do everything in the game so I'm going after all the skills. After I finished getting all the skills I really wanted, I started going after all the longest duration skills (Mining 4, Tinkering 5, Gardening 5, etc)

  • I'm pretty much where you are, magic panda. I have all the skills I really wanted now. I am still learning the others, but not at the frantic speed learning pace. I think we can pretty much count on new skills being added at some point, but in the meantime I will plug along. Oh, and Eyeballery is really very cool so I'm glad I got that one.I use it a lot to find sparkly and the markers in the ancestral lands.  But Levitation? That one is down on my list of priorities as it never seemed to work very well for me during beta.

  • I just realized that some of the lower level cooking skills might be needed for street projects. Hm.

  • I plan to do this too once I've learnt my core skills. I'm crafting a glitch who's a miner and maker, with a bit of animal husbandry because I'm an animal lover and petting piggies is a fun way to pass the time when travelling between sparkly rock deposits.

Once I've got all I want I'm going to stop learning as, as others have suggested, there will likely be new skills and expansions that I'd like to be able to work towards. I also like the idea of *having* to work with other glitches (I can't cook anything so food is always a necessity for me) as I see no real point in solo-ing an MMO.

  • Eyeballery and Snapshotting are ace, you should re-think blowing those off.

Also never got much out of Levitation in beta, because I was doing it wrong!  Now I see that it's super handy.

  • I agree w/Rachel2635 Eyeballry is very cool, especially when you are in a hurry to mine and just want to find that particular type of rock. I would encourage you to get that one if you like to mine. I enjoy the cooking skills, they are fun to do and gave me quick xp and cash by completing the quests early on. But, each person is looking for something different w/Glitch, maybe just take a break from skills and rethink your position in a few days or weeks.

  • I find all sorts of secret spaces and cleverly placed just-off-camera favour/experience quoins with eyeballery. I would recommend it!

  • Hold on. Eyeballery whatever???!!!! **head spins**

    Eyeballery is the best!

  • Most likely they would make BL 6,7, and 8.. with more skills adding onto the chart
Posted 14 months ago by SpyGame Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @SpyGame: I dunno... BL6 would end up taking like, a week base time and would it really end up cutting more than 20% off of skill learning time? 20% is actually quite a bit, especially when it comes to skills that end up taking 5+ days (1 whole day off!). Then again, if they add a lot more skills the times really are going to start piling up...

Edit: I'd also like to add that there is probably going to be another Bureaucracy skill level to get permits to upgrade buildings when that feature is released, not to mention other possible levels of Engineering or maybe even a new branch to the skill tree all together. If you're not totally committed to one of the current branches, there is a good chance new ones will come out that you'd rather learn, so waiting might be in your best interest. Then again, it could be a long time until totally new skills come out (into 2012 if things don't go quite as fast as the developers are planning) so you might want to learn some of the skills so that you can keep your interest in the game with the quests and abilities they each unlock.

  • I see no problem with it.  if it doesn't matter to you though, why not let the Skills run.  You don't have to use them.  You might get a quest or two that you would enjoy or you might get more extras when you use the skills you do like.  You need do nothing more than choose those skills and let the Rock do the learning,  You might be happy later if, when new skills are added, you find you need those skills you have no interest in now.

  • New skills haven't been coming particularly fast.  Unless the rate of skill release increases dramatically I plan to keep on learning.

  • Personally, I like having all the skills, whether I use them all frequently or not.

I don't think you're crazy with wanting to just stop with the ones you really enjoy. I say more power to you! You can always pick up learning them if you feel a need to at another point in time.

  • Have the developers said anything about an "Unlearn" ability? I know it's been brought up by players quite a bit, but I'm not sure if there's been any official statement regarding it. (I think I recall something official about not being able to unlearn prerequisites, so you couldn't learn Mining IV and then unlearn Mining I, II and III, but I don't remember the context).

If they are planning on adding it at some point, though, I'll just go ahead and learn everything available now. While I may think I only want to nibble piggies, water trees and plant crops, I won't know for sure until I try it all. Besides, I'm somewhat inoculated to long training times after playing EVE for a bit. =)

  • There are lots of skills that I am not interested in either....so pushing them to the end. Like others have said....at least keep something going, cause in the long run...all of the skills introduced to this point might be required to attain the next set of skills. This is my thinking and 2 currants worth. :)

Oh, great, thanks! It was right there in front of me the whole time. =)

The Unlearning skills were shown on the skill tree until the end of beta, but never implemented.  They were removed at that point, but devs have said they will be coming back as learnable skills.

  • There are skills I never bothered to learn in beta but then during street building projects I needed them, so that's when I learned them. If you get curious about something you can learn the skill then. But I do suggest getting curious about things - you won't ever know what's interesting about some things in the game until you've advanced a few levels in skill.

In beta I didn't bother with animal skills and now I have meat collectors that make me money while I sleep. :)

  • Wait, unlearning will be another skill? So if I have one ill-chosen skill I want to unlearn, I have to learn a new unlearning skill in order to do so, leaving my total number of skills the same?

    aaaaargh.

  • Eyeballery is incredibly useful if you're doing the Faded Heart quest.

It's much easier to scan the whole street by standing still than running about.

  • Yes you are crazy - but that's an entirely unrelated issue ;-) (just kidding...)
