What is a teleportation token for?

So I put a few levels into Teleportation because I thought it would be convenient.  The skills page said it just cost energy, no info about tokens.  Now that I've done it a few times I realize I have a finite set of 5 tokens from being a beta tester but 2 are used up, one on a script which I swore I used energy for, and one for doing another teleport.  Teleports I used during the quests unlocked by teleportation don't seem to count.

So what are they used for?  To set up a teleportation spot?  To teleport to whatever spot you want on the map regardless of having been there before to set up a spot?  Are there ways to teleport and just incur energy penalties?

I'm just trying to figure out if Teleport was a waste of time for me.  I have not yet decided if I want to spend real money on Glitch, and if the only way I can teleport is by getting tokens for every time I want to do this, then I feel it would be better form to declare outright on the skill page "Teleportation requires tokens, which can be obtained through a subscription plan or individual purchase of credits."  Games that have a mix of free-to-play and paid content are upfront about what is free and what isn't, and I think Glitch should be the same, or I bet there will be a lot more newbies like me who go "Oh hey, teleportation sounds fun!  Wait, you mean I have to pay to use this?  Why didn't you tell me that before I spend xx time on it?"

Alternatively if I'm totally wrong on how teleportation works *please* enlighten me.  Thanks!

  • I'm pretty new to the game, but I have had a little experience with this.

What I've observed so far is that I can teleport to spots that I have saved without using a token, but if I want to go to a place that is not saved I have to use one.

That seems pretty simple, so other more experienced players may have more info.

  • Teleport token lets you teleport to any street on map but you have to have teleport skill.  Using token does not use up any energy which is important if you are tying to get home to your stash.  Molybdenum Subscription's get like 50 of them a month.

Teleportation scirps still use tokens or energy if they are not imbued by their creator.  When you make them you decide if it is make's or user's expense.  "his will zip you on a one way ticket to somewhere specific… as long as you have a teleportation token or the energy to pay for your ride."  You need teleport IV to make scripts.

So teleport skills 1-4 let you teleport to fixed places.  IV lets you make scripts.  V lets you teleport to any map point but costs energy.  if you don't have energy you can choose to use the token.  I also think you are limited to so many teleports token free per day.

  • I'd love more clarity on the teleport tokens. They felt required to me so I haven't bothered to train any teleporting skills since the reset.

Are tokens only acquired via subscriptions/cash (after the 5 free beta tokens)?

Under what circumstances does teleporting *not* require a token? (Daily limit? Skill level? Ah-purchased script?)

  • TP tokens are used when a player wants to teleport to any location on the map without using energy to get there (provided they at least have TP1).  The location can be somewhere you've been to or somewhere completely unknown (as long as it's accessible via TP).  While you can use TP tokens to use the skill, you don't have to, but there may be times when you would prefer not to use energy or even want to make just one more map TP.

Different levels of teleportation skill give different benefits.

TP1 - 1 jump location - each TP uses 33% of user's total energy capacity; 5 token based map TPs per game day (no energy req'd since is a token TP)
TP2 - 2 jump locations - each TP uses 25% of...; 5 token based map TPs
TP3 - 3 jump locations - each TP uses 20% of...; 5 token based map TPs
TP 4 - 3 jump locations - each TP uses 15% of...; 2 map teleportations (user's choice of using energy or a token) per game day; ability to write TP scripts if user has Penpersonship
TP5 - 3 jump locations - each TP uses 10% of...; 3 map teleportations (energy or token) per game day; ability to summon another player to one's location at summoner's expense

TP scripts can be imbued with a TP token so a user does not need to spend energy to TP.  However, with an unimbued script, a user can choose to use energy or a token depending on their own preference.

Tokens are acquired either via subscription or by converting credits to TP tokens.

(You can also check the Glitch wiki for information about the various skills and items.  :D )

[edit: removed TP4/5 token-based map TPs; see Larky's post below]

  • Marebito, your list isn't quite right, unless some changes have been made since the very end of beta.  The map teleports from TP4 and TP5 are purely map teleports by energy, and they are in addition to token teleports.  (I tested it while I had TP5, and I was able to do 8 map teleports one day, 5 with tokens and 3 with energy.)

    So, it should be:

TP 4 - 3 jump locations - each TP uses 15% of...; 2 map teleportations (using energy) and 5 token based map teleportations (total 7 map TPs) per game day; ability to write TP scripts if user has Penpersonship
TP5 - 3 jump locations - each TP uses 10% of...; 3 map teleportations (using energy) and 5 token based map teleportations (total 8 map TPs) per game day; ability to summon another player to one's location at summoner's expense

  • Tokens can only acquired by paying money (through subscription or buying credits which you turn into tp tokens) after the 5 free beta tokens.

-Without any Teleportation (TP) skills, you will need tp tokens to teleport anywhere.
-With TP 1, you can tp to a point you can set (multiple times) with a cost to energy. A token would be used if you wanted to teleport somewhere through the map that you haven't set as a tp point (and would not use energy).
-With TP 2, you can tp to two points you can set, with a cost to energy. Same deal with the tokens as TP 1.
-With TP 3, you can tp to three points you can set, with cost to energy. Same deal with tokens as TP 1 and 2.
-With TP 4, you can tp to three points you can set, with cost to energy. You can map teleport (to locations you haven't set as tp points) 2 times a game day with an energy cost. You can also map teleport using the tp tokens to avoid the energy cost. You can also write TP scripts (if you have paper, quill, and penpersonship). If the script is unimbued, it will use energy to tp you wherever it was written. If it is imbued with a tp token, it will not use energy. (These scripts, imbued or not, can be given to friends or sold at auction.) I *believe* these scripts don't use up the limit on map teleports.
-With TP 5, you have all the benefits of TP 4 with an added map teleport using energy (bringing it up to 3 per game day). You can also summon players to you twice a day, using energy or more than twice, with tp tokens.

Note that the energy costs of teleportation decrease with each additional TP skill learned. Teleportation cooldowns also decrease with each additional TP skill learned.

  • Hmm... I remember someone telling me that's how the token TPs worked at TP4 and 5 but didn't actually work that part out myself since I rarely token TP.  As it is, the wiki and FAQ both agree with the 5 token TPs total per game day.  Will edit.  Thanks!  :)

  • We had a discussion one day in Live Help and nobody was sure how it would go, so I tested it out (can't find my results thread now).  Anyway, you can check for yourself that it's working right -- when you do an energy map teleport, your "0/5 tokens used today" shouldn't change.

(Also, the text for the teleporting popup used to be a bit misleading, sort of implying you might only have 5 total map teleports per day, which likely led to some misconceptions, but I am pretty sure it's been fixed.)

  • Thanks for your help, everyone!

I think the text issue led me to think that teleports were linked to tokens which would regen so you could teleport 5 times per game day, but then I saw they weren't regening which let me to look some more and I just found the Wiki page confusingly written here.  But it's good to know I can do both kinds of teleporting with energy as I wanted to after I get to TP3, 4, and 5.
