Finally, I have my gardening and croppery at high enough levels to consider making a steady income from it. But one look at the Auctions, and I see it's just as good to sell to vendors.
Selling to vendors is still making money, isn't it (assuming it costs you less than about 3/4 energy to produce 1 energy worth of crop yield -- and don't forget to figure in feeding some to piggies to make more seeds)? Alternately, could you gain a little more traction by processing the crops before putting them in auctions (i.e. grow broccoli, cucumbers, carrots, and potatoes, and sell the Common Crudites you produce)?
Personally, I'm happy that, with 12 crop garden plots, 3 piggies, and 3 chickens (plus a butterfly -- probably ought to get another one of those, maybe I should harvest some bubbles next time I'm wandering) I haven't had to buy a food item in a couple RL weeks (I started the game two or three days after launch), and I have enough grain surplus to sell off a bale now and then, or can produce enough extra seeds to sell a few packets.
@widdershins, your correct. There is not a faster option to get seeds. Except of course from a gardening vendor, and I swear the cost of the seeds went up after beta. I'm not postive about that though.....
Guano makes crops worth growing. By placing 2 guano on one crop, the growth time is cut down by about 97%, leaving the 3% to grow the rest of the way which usually takes about 10 minutes instead of 10 hours. If you're ever planning to hang out at home and pick at the animals for food, take the time to garden with guano!
The best food for a batterfly is 3 planks or 3 eggs, whichever you have an abundance of. Collecting guano is a dextrous business though, as one mis-click or mis-keystroke can accidentally feed all or half of your planks or eggs to one batterfly, NOM NOM NOM!
