Any plans to develop this in HTML5 (now that Adobe is working on an HTML5 dev product)?

Interesting article:  http://www.fastcompany.com/1770591/adobes-edge-html5-designer-is-ready-for-a-post-flash-internet

I think it's about time Adobe did something, considering how heavy Flash is on some systems (including mine, which sometimes makes playing Glitch a challenge unless I shut everything else down).  What say the masses - and what say TinySpeckers about this?

  • Interesting concept. For Glitch, it might be great given the memory leaks it suffers. I hope then can fix it. Having all my physical memory dedicated to the game is a little disheartening, but I digress.

However, if it is in HTML5, it might be something to see.

  • I'm not a developer or anything, but I don't think this is exactly feasible. Although they're both editable by Adobe products and created for ostensibly the same purpose, Flash and HTML5 are vastly different. You might as well say "switch to Silverlight."

I would like to hear Tiny Speck's response to this, though! Honestly it seems like their choice in (and use of) Flash is superior to most of what you can see out there. And I bet there are lots of things you can't do in HTML5 yet that you can do in Flash, and that's the reason for the choice.

  • Actually, the HTML 5 standard is incomplete and not fully W3C official last time I checked (I am a developer). And what is wrong with Silverlight? Yes, it is an incomplete platform compared to Flash, but it doesn't have the memory leaks or is as processor hungry. Anyways, HTML 5 is supposed to fill the gap that Flash attempted to in the past without the problems (like privacy issues). I'm downloading this test platform.

  • Granted - Flash is definitely more developed than HTML5 at this point - I completely get the differences. I don't think it's quite as drastic as saying "Switch to silverlight" however.  (My company developed a web product that is 100% Flash and we on the product dev team are all cheering for HTML5 because Flash can be painful).

I figure it's early in Adobe's cycle with this product, and still in the early life cycle of HTML5 that it's worth opening a discussion though - mostly to see what Tiny Speck has to say about it (as I am a curious kitty).

  • @Fokian Ain't nothin' wrong with Silverlight. I like it! I was just trying to illustrate that there is a big difference in platforms and that Adobe's having produced a design tool doesn't really count for anything much. :)

@WhizGidget Yes heck yes. If an HTML5 conversion is even an itsy bitsy glimmer in a Tiny Speck dev's eye, that would be super cool to hear!

But since I am (as stated) not a developer I should probably shut my mouth and just watch this thread.

  • Just from looking at the amount of data that is coming in on the main server connection, I very much doubt that most JS impls could keep up. Moving away from Flash also puts you back into the world of browser compat. Never going to happen, period.

  • We have no religious or philosophical reasons to use Flash — if there was a reasonable alternative, we probably would have gone with it. But, there isn't. Maybe around 2013 we can look at the feasibility of HTML5 :)

Having said that, it is likely that you will be able to play some games with your Glitch avatar in HTML5 or other non-Flash environments not too long from now. Here's a demonstration of Cal's avatar animated in HTML5, the code for which we've open sourced.

  • Ah cool! Thanks, @stoot & @Bees!

  • @stoot - this looks like a future way to easily add user contributions to the end product. Is that anywhere in your future plans? A little OT I know.

  • @stoot - that animation looks great! I know an HTML5 standard is a long ways away, but I'm looking forward to not dealing with the hog Flash is on my system.

  • Stoot, you should have given us that tidbit for the weekend. I could just play with that page.

  • Glad to hear there is scope there. Running glitch on linux is painful at the best of times, using a disgusting amount ofboth memory and processor. H5 usually runs marginally higher than idle.

    Hit actions? There's something interesting...

  • @arcturus - Remember the new skills? The combat looking one? I wonder if that's what we'll be seeing. I'd like to play with it too, but I've already got too much going on just with Glitch alone. I'm way behind in projects.

  • As an aside, I played around with that HTML5 animation on Cal's page and noticed there 2x and 3x walking animations. Is there some type of buff that enables my avatar to walk faster? Or is that just for internal testing?

  • I think those are in fact the Action Script functions in place already.

i nabbed a little background scrolling script so that my avatar can perpetually walk through the long deleted alpha test "shade street" from whence he sprang into being.

  • I don't care what they use, I just want it run on my danged iPad and I know  "they ain't never gonna be no flash over there!"

  • @arcturus, the 'hit' actions are currently used as you teleport. Occasionally, the avatar will get frozen in the 'hit' position and skate around the screen, which is terribly amusing (reload to make it go away).

  • Stoot, thanks for that page, and for the hope that someday, maybe, HTML5 will be a possibility for the game.
