Turning off power saving mode

I would love to be able to turn off power saving mode. It really doesn't help my computer, and in fact it actually slows down my game when it comes up.

I think it's great to have as an option, but I don't think everyone needs it.

Thanks for reading!

  • +1 I hate this new mode!
It's useless to me, and kicks in while I'm doing things in my house!
If I'm standing still but harvesting herbs or putting items in SDBs, it kicks in like I'm afk.

All claims that this is for our benefit make me laugh.
I can only see the benefit of less load on TS' end.
If that's what it's for, fine, but then that should be the explanation TS gives.

xombiekitty- also, jono discusses it in this topic in general

"If I'm standing still but harvesting herbs or putting items in SDBs, it kicks in like I'm afk."

That sounds like a bug to me.

  • It is entirely possible that there is a bug; are you able to reproduce this problem multiple times? If yes, please tell me what web browser you're using and what you do to make it happen (every step -- I open the game, go to my house, etc.).

And ***promise me*** that you have the game open as the main window on your computer, that you are actively interacting with it (meaning actively playing, not leaving it alone while you do *anything* else, that includes quickly checking email or watching a YouTube video or writing a screenplay) when it goes into this mode.

The feature is designed to only go into power saving when you are *definitely* not actively playing; the browser tells us you are in another tab or another application. When you go back to play, the browser tells us and we make it fast again. It's instantaneous on every machine we have tested.

But, as I said, it's always possible there is a bug!

(Keep in mind that if there is a bug, we'll fix the bug, but we're not removing the mode or adding an option to disable it at this time.)

  • I'm curious why Glitch isn't making power saving mode an option?

I've chatted with lots of other Glitches who seem to dislike it as much as I do and I guess I don't understand the purpose of not making it an option if it's suppose to be for our benefit.

  • Many people like it very much and it has measurable benefits on power consumption. The majority of people are not playing on two monitors and would not notice.

Also, remember that Flash is supposed to lower the speed *already* and it is something I do not have control over -- we're just making it clear that it is occurring and making sure to slow down other parts of the game too.

Despite not hearing back from anyone claiming there is a bug where it turns on while they are playing (something I've never seen), I increased the delay to two minutes and made changes to how it works -- if there is a bug, hopefully it is fixed or a different bug now.

We don't have code written to present a settings panel yet. It's something I'd like to have sooner than later, because there are some other fancy things coming that you'll want control over.

  • I seriously don't get the complaints.  I run two monitors on my system and do other things on the other monitor.  Before power save mode, when I wanted to go back to playing Glitch, I had to click the window so that the window was selected.  After the intro of power save mode, I do the exact same thing.  Where's the problem?

I'm betting slowing it down to 2 FPS makes our systems talk to the server less, another good thing for EVERYBODY.  All the other online games I play just boot players for inactivity.  I'd rather TS put in a non-optional power save than always come back to find I've been forced out of the world.

  • Jono thank you so much for all your info! You're always so helpful and I appreciate everything you do :)

Saucelah-  I (like most of the people I know) do not play on two monitors haha. I play on my laptop. I'm really glad you like the power-saving mode! That's great :) Some of us however, do not like it and I was bringing light to that. I'm not sure where you saw "complaints" but I see people (mostly me! haha) voicing an opinion and I think that's awesome, heck it's what the forums are for! :) What's good for you might not be what's good for me, and that's what makes the world so great :D

  • I can replicate your bug, Jono. I hadn't logged in for a day and a half. I logged in on Bellerophon's street, went to my street, to my house, to the top floor and into decorate mode to drag my piggy feeders and meat collectors out of the "attic" because they were seriously inconveniencing me up there. Game went immediately into power saving mode, and no amount of clicking got me out. I even tried clicking on a new tab and back into the game tab to shake it out, but no joy. Reloaded back into my house, went about dragging my collectors and feeders down again, and again, went into power saving mode, clicking didn't revive it, reloaded.

Again - loaded into my house, got all my collectors and feeders down, went to move them to the end of my yard. The very second I got to the end of the yard - bam, power saving mode. I have other tabs open, but I wasn't in any of them. I was in the game tab.

    Using Chrome 19.0.1084.56, on OS X 10.6.8

  • Jono, I do have two monitors, but my left one is used for putting up windows to not pay attention to all the time but I might need later, and my right one is used for things I'm actually paying attention to.  So I have one monitor that includes the glitch window and over top of that window I'll have a window I'm working in.  Before the power saving mode, I'd work in one window and follow glitch chat in the other window, peeking out from the top window, on the same single monitor.

Anyway that's just me (maybe I have a bigger than normal monitor?) and I have no idea how hard it would be to make it opt-out, but I do hope that option will be part of any settings panel that may be upcoming :) ( It's happy to hear of other fancy things coming up.. it's a little tiny teaser but I find it super-exciting!)

  • Jono - this morning, it's working fine. I logged in, mined for a few minutes, logged back out and back in (just in case) and mined for a few minutes, no problems. Last night, after I posted a reply to you, it was ridiculously consistent - no matter where I was, on my street, in my house, out in UR, after a minute and a half (from 1.25 to 1.37, actually, yes I used a stopwatch, don't judge me) power saving mode would kick in and I couldn't click out of it. I updated my Chrome to 20.0.1132.43, updated flash, deleted my cache, everything I could think of, and it just kept doing it. There were a couple of posts from people in the bug forums having the same problem - they were using Chrome too.

OK, tl:dr - was sucking, not sucking now.

  • I appreciate most players don't use two screens, and many that do didn't find it irritating; so it is/ was a minor issue. And, that it wasn't a problem when working as intended for the vast majority of players with single screen set ups.

But - I really do love the change. The power save function works great with my play habits now; kicks in when my attention has wandered, not when I'm just doing two things at once.

    Thanks!

  • Lily, I'd have to figure out which thread linked me to here, but there are plenty of complaints.

But I think everyone who doesn't like power save mode should honestly take a step back and ask themselves if they would prefer getting kicked from the server and logged out for inactivity or if they prefer something like power save mode.  Around the online gaming industry, those seem to be the only two options.

  • I was surprised how quickly people stopped complaining after my last update; not sure if that was because they were tired of complaining, or if it was working to their satisfaction.

Thanks for everyone's feedback. Please keep it coming if you have something new to add.

  • It's natural to react negatively to change and the visual aspect is heavy-handed.

I think what happens is that people see the screen change dramatically when they switch to another window and that triggers them to go back and "fix" it.

It might be better to have a much more subtle effect, such as using the existing "sleeping" emote. (But, please no more chat spam.)
