Use of animals as food

As a vegan, I disagree with the use of animals as food or any other purpose.

I got to the part where the character pets the pig and then gets a pork chop from him, and I thought that was not cool.

Getting a pork chop means killing the pig = violence. Not cool.

This game is going to take off in a big way. Can't we use that to promote non-violence to all living beings? Please.

  • @Laurali - there is a rather nasty article on Wikipedia about Pica.  Personally it seems fine to me!  (Though I don't indulge myself can't see any problem with it as long as the stuff is not germy!)  I have chewed my way through a few pencils in my time - lol!

  • I've been a vegetarian for over 15 years now and I have to admit I hated the piggie nibbling at first..I'm still not that keen on it but having seen the direction of the game change so as not to cause offence by using a cross on a grave, I'd hate to see political correctness make an appearance here. Personally I thought the people moaning about the cross were being a little bit over-dramatic and should have just taken a chill-pill..and even though I personally don't like the meat eating, I just have to slap myself and remember it's just a game.

Like Cassandria said, it's pica, and it's often caused by mineral deficiency, especially iron deficiency anaemia. Personally I've chewed on pencils and cotton shirts and papers, but that was all when I was a kid. I haven't done so since I was seven, since afterwards I started taking iron supplements.

Of course, that still hasn't done anything to curtail my love of shellfish and citrus fruits (which aren't high in iron but help absorb it).

  • I'm a vegan, and my view on this is that the pigs aren't harmed in the process of nibbling in game, so I don't get offended by it.

  • Meat is Murder, sweet tasty delicious murder!

The way the pigs act in regards to being nibbled in game reminds me of Douglas Adams book "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe"

  • Essie, at least we know the search function is working, and new repetitive threads aren't being made :)

  • I know this thread is ancient, but it was brought to my attention by a more recent thread, and I had been wanting to give some feedback to the developers about this particular aspect of the game, so I'll do that here rather than make a repetitive post some time in the future.

I can't speak for all vegans, but as a vegan I love that we don't kill and eat animals in this game. I suppose we do kill sentient creatures - we crush the heck out of barnacles that are sentient enough to make witty comments to us, and hack poor little wood trees to pieces - but the eggplants and piggy petting/nibbling and butterfly massaging/milking feel like little pieces of humane subversion to me and bring me a lot of joy. The way in which my Glitch interacts with the world around her feels heavily shaped by the flavor text spouted from all the various plants, animals, rocks, and so on, and for me the overall impression is of an ecosystem that is much more in harmony and cooperation than our world. Rocks flirt as they're being mined, trees give out gifts with their harvests, etc. This really works for me and makes the game that much more playable, and I also think it fits with the general spirit of joy and cooperation that is a hallmark of Glitch.

All that being said, it is a little disappointing to me that all (or almost all? I don't know every recipe yet) the highest-yield foods (in terms of net energy) contain meat. I'd love a little variety in that regard!

  • I'd let someone nibble on me if I could instantly lose weight and not be harmed in the process.

  • meat contains most protein of all foods (in real life, that is), so it's only logical that all the " the highest-yield foods (in terms of net energy) contain meat"...

  • If I wanted to, I could be offended by many many things in this environment, from its cruelty to rocks and trees to learning things like "Bureaucratic Arts" (I come here to AVOID thinking about paperwork!) and the general grind required in order to progress (I started my own COMPANY just so I could avoid having to do the same thing over and over and over again, and here, I *HAVE* to engage in repetition... and repetition... and repetition...).  However, it's just a game, and if I want to enjoy it, I have to relax and let the cosmology of Glitch guide my play here.  Alternately, I can DENY the cosmology of Glitch and relax elsewhere.

Quite frankly, I'm happy to have such an open-ended, whimsical environment in which to play (it's not a "game" by proper definition, so I try not to refer to it that way), and with nothing *absolutely* mandatory required to progress (although I just thought of something related that might just be threadworthy, so I'll start that soon), I just more or less concern myself with the way I want to spend any particular day, whether it's building projects, gardening, nurturing trees, or making all manner of bizarre substances.  You can all choose the same process, or not.  I hope to play with you if you stay, and I will miss you when you are gone.

  • @Napabeth

Was thinking the same thing! Let's start a PETA group on Glitch!

    People Eat Tasty Animals

Everyone has a right to choose what ever they want; Be it sexual preference or eating habits as a cited set of examples, we all have a choice. However, it's quite another to condemn another for their choices and I honestly think that if you don't like it, at least respect the others "choice" and let it go. I like meat, doesn't mean you have to.

  • Meridian, I make Fortifying Gruel. No meat, and 191 energy. (You just need MC2)
Posted 16 months ago by Innie✿, Obviously Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Innie - Thanks for letting me know! That's actually pretty amusing, considering I think that's what most omnivores think vegans subsist on, Fortifying Gruel. :)

@Posh - "some people really have way too much free time on their hands..." Was that directed at me? I assume it was since it followed a quote from my post. The point of being a beta tester, in my mind, is to play the game and give feedback on my experience. I had some very positive feedback to give as well as a suggestion of something I'd like to see added to the game. I think giving feedback on a game I enjoy and have the privilege of playing in beta is a nice use of my time, not an indication that I have too much free time. Forgive me if I incorrectly read a weird passive-aggressive critique of my comment into a statement from you that had a totally different meaning - the internet is an easy breeding ground for misinterpretation. Also, this is not the place (nor do I have any desire) to start a conversation about nutrition, but I don't know if it's true that IRL meat provides the most *net* protein (or energy) when you factor in the resources used to produce different sources of food energy. Lucky for us Glitches that nibbling free-roaming piggies is so efficient!

  • This thread makes me laugh-out-loud. If you don't like nibbling on piggies, don't play the game.

I'm getting so tired of these threads... "don't dig up peat", "don't nibble on piggies", "don't eat spinach"

It's a game. Get over it.

  • Psssh, I am a vegetarian.....I nibble on piggies.  However, I am not a vegetarian because I am opposed to eating meat.  I had my gallbladder removed about 11 yrs ago (tmi?), and it seems to have caused problems with me eating meat. The meat I feed my family is humane and from a small local farm.  I am 100% for humane treatment of all living creatures.....and IMO the piggies in this game are not being treated violently.  In fact, they love it when you nibble them :)

  • @Bashere

Devs make changes based on requests posted by players.  There are going to be threads like this as long as devs listen and make the requested changes.  It's a beta test.   Get used to it.

  • Or you could extend your vegan lifestyle into the game. That is, promise yourself that your Glitchizen will sustain itself using only food/ingredients harvested from trees and gardens. Having a personal goal in the game does add a fun factor to it. Just my two cents though.

  • Just to put this thread into context for those that are seeing it for the first time: it is 8 months old, and the OP is still level 1, with the last thing they ever did happening on Feb. 25th. I don't think he/she is around any more to read these replies, and apparently thought the pig nibbling issue was so negative that they didn't bother playing the game enough to reach level 2.
Posted 16 months ago by Shepherdmoon Subscriber! | Permalink
  • You know, this thread was started 8 months ago. Haven't people ridiculed, made fun of, strawmanned, and scolded the OP enough?

And, jeez - "Please don't ruin the game for us by expressing your opinion!" Really? Really?

If for some masochistic reason Sylvia is still reading this thread: This is me giving you BIG BIG HUG for putting up with all this crap. I may disagree with you about whether non-fatally nibbling piggies in Glitch supports real-life abuse of animals, or about whether it's right to eat other animals in real life, but I sure don't think your opinions or your post warrant the sort of treatment you got in this thread. You probably expected it, since Gods know how much crap vegans have to deal with in real life, everything from people laughing at their life choices and telling them to "get over" the dictates of their consciences, to supposedly "accommodating" food situatons in which there's nothing they can at, to people actually slipping meat into their food as a "prank".... so I think you were very brave to start this thread at all.

    And if people are going to bump it 8 months later just to give you more crap, I'm going to bump it to give you a big hug. {{{{Sylvia}}}}

And thanks to Stoot also for his response to this thread. He didn't make fun of you or scold you; he just presented the facts of the game and his opinion about it. I wish more players commenting here had followed his lead.
