First they came for the no-no.

I was not surprised when no-no got nerfed, nor was I surprised when gurly drinks got nerfed, although that one really frickin' hurt me.  What's next, earthshakers?  And why nerf them down to the very nub of nerfdom?   They may have been stupid advantageous in their primeval state, but now there's barely a point to them at all.

Someday little Glitches won't believe me when I tell them about the magical effects of no-no, gurly drinks, and (probably) earthshakers.  They just flat out won't believe me.  And so I would like to propose a special holiday.  Just one day per Glitch year, each of these items gets restored to its former glory.

You  can even move the days around, as if they are on an ancient, lunar based calendar.  Just give me one day, ONE MORE DAY, of feeling super gurly.  Er...per Glitch annum.

  • Yeah, these changes make me sad.  They reduce the magical, mystical, whoa-how-cool-ness of the game.

  • i'd rather see the resources upped for these things then getting nerfed... want the crafting system to get more mature, not see more items get tossed in the no-reason-to-use pile.

  • I think that would be a cool idea and a nice inside joke for the beta testers. One Ur-day a year when loads of things have the effect they used to have before things got tweaked.

I think it would have to be a long term dream though... the code that did those things is now on the cutting-room floor (or more accurately: several revisions back in the version control system) and it's not as important as game balancing and adding new features. Then the longer it gets left, the harder it'll be to find the old code... so it's unlikely to happen. Best hope is to nudge the developers now and have them put conditional code around things they change from now on in so that those things COULD be re-enabled at a future date.

  • My problem with these updates is that they made using the items really useless. Gurly Drinks are now just run of the mill drinks, replaceable with anything else, which is the problem with most drinks as it is (because mood is the easiest thing to upkeep ever). The changes to No-No powder make it useless to use also. 5 minutes of limitless energy and then Im super pooped for the rest of the gameday? My base energy will last me longer than 5 minutes. These nerfs may have been an easy-to-guess change to items that were otherwise powerful ways of making currants or gaining experience, but the changes themselves render the items inefficient & impractical to use.

  • Agreed, Taylor Swift.  My number one preference would be that they at least meet us halfway--dampen the effects down 50% instead of 90%.  But I think we would need a thread as long and vociferous as the Gardening thread to catch the ear of our dev-giants...apparently this is not that big an issue for folks.

But, yeah, that one day a year thing sounds like fun.
Posted 17 months ago by Nanookie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think the major reason why it's not an issue for me personally is because I'm a cook and can scrounge up what I need to fill up my bar. Did I enjoy the no-no? Yes! It was a lot more fun than cooking, since I had to pay attention a little more to the crashes and refill as I needed. It also led me to trade with friends for the powder since I never bothered to pick up the skill.

I was quite disturbed when it was nerfed as heavily as it was. I tried it over and over again thinking that I must have made an error in my calculations (I have a bad habit of reading patch notes AFTER I experience things). Then I just made the decision that it was useless (as many of you have noted) and carried on with cooking.

Do I miss it? I certainly look at my no-no powders forlornly these days until I chucked it out of my inventory a mere 15 minutes ago. I think the biggest impact for me is that the no-no was an alternative that I actually explored in my gameplay and led to more player interactions and heck, fun. Now I'm back to being self-sustained and not bothering with exploring options other than the ones that are tried and tested.

tl; dr - Powders and other drinks allow for more options in gameplay and nerfing them results in limited paths.

  • I guess I wasn't in pre-nerf.  What exactly was the difference in the powder then and now?
Posted 17 months ago by Mahphisto Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Pre-nerf, each packet of no-no powder lasted 10 min and you could use it indefinitely - until you decided it was time to die or when you forgot to use another packet.

I think I feel the same way Anty-pants does about the nerfing :\

A day to relive the power of no no powder and gurly drinks would be great, I think.

  • It almost feels like parental control has stepped up and started dictating what we can and cannot do.
Why has no no been "damp down" is it to socially unacceptable?  Is that why it no longer is in quests to accomplish?  I want to scream foul words.  I love how Glitch is so open minded and free thinking and when these roadblocks are set up we should question authority as to the why?
I wanted to learn as many skills as I could before playing with no no, but now it has become a why bother with it thing.
My question is why change what everyone was having fun with?  I just don't get it.

Once a year ? everyday of the year is a better idea.

[as i have said before] I am not likely the target customer, but these nerfs to irrelevancy makes me wonder why I would play more, rather than less. One day a year is cute, but ultimately what about the others?

  • I actually disagree that no-no, gurly and (anticipating future nerfing) earthshakers should stay at their previous incarnations.   If a single item becomes a route to leveling up for its own sake, I think something is wacko about that.   I was glad when no-no got nerfed, just alarmed at how much so.  Same with gurly drinks.

The energy hit associated with butterfly singing is still so intense, you can actually still kill yourself, even if you only get to sing to a butterfly once per day--just go find a street with lots of butterflies.   I don't have a problem with more subtle ways of preserving energy while singing being introduced, but I don't see any right now, and consequently, don't sing to butterflies anymore.

I suspect meeting in the middle is not going to happen and instead of our Superman drinks, we will have to make do with Urkel drinks.  So...back to a one day a year.  Glitch has two histories...the ancient one we get from the game and the one created by the game incarnations and how players experienced it through alpha/beta.  A Day of Superhero Drinks acknowledges that history, don't ya think?

ETA  Gurly drink info for new players:  Singing to butterflies in game grants a sizable xp boost, but an even bigger energy cost.  You used to be able to sing to each butterfly eight times per game day and with the quaffing of a gurly drink, you did not take an energy hit when you sang.  So imagine going to streets that are thick with butterflies, slugging down a gurly drink and then singing...you could easily accrue thousands of xp in very short time.

Now.. you can only sing to a butterfly once per day, sustain the same energy loss/xp gain, but can't combat that with gurly power.  So you only sing to a butterfly, I guess, if you have a mountain of meat and potatoes handy, or near midnight so you can time your near death experience with a new day infusion of energy.

  • I know I'm in the minority, but it never even occurred to me to use gurly drinks for butterfly singing. Once my energy tank hit 1000, there wasn't much incentive to level; before that, quests and donations were plenty (and I started before they killed currants after level 20).

But when I need to restock after a project or make some money at auction? LOVE those gurly drinks.

Agree about the nono, though. Now it's more a novelty than anything actually helpful.
Posted 17 months ago by Sheepy Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I didn't use the gurly drinks for leveling either; I just used the butterfly singing to send me to hell.

Perhaps I'll be using no-no powder for that purpose now, since it's getting really hard to kill myself :\
Posted 17 months ago by Millie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I never used gurly drinks for much of anything. Hadn't learned about that yet. Only tried no-no powder for the first time this test. Still haven't quite figured out a whole lot about it other than yeah I was all jacked up but then I died.

I'm not keen on the whole dying thing. Not so much.

  • I used Gurly drinks to top off my levels, sometimes...but I mostly made them to sell.

Never tried No-No  - but I know peeps who loved to use it and it was a fun part of their game
Posted 17 months ago by sgjo Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I never noticed much with Gurly drinks and i have only sung to butterflies by mistake instead of milk.  I haven't even tried no no yet, so you might think why is xox complaining about water down drinks, no go no no, slow gardening, no bat crap on ground, no currants for leveling up and all the other "new and unimproved changes"........Because this is the start of a bad downtrend.....up to now we have been pampered and some ways felt loved.  The only reason I can think that we are having these changes we all seem to dislike is because the game is getting ready to go live.

I imagine there will be a lot more watering down in the next month or so on every aspect of the game.  Just think how much harder everything will be, nobody will have a home, currants or skills.  If it takes days or weeks instead of hours to learn a skill then it will take weeks or months to get a home and leveling up apparently will be lots and lots of hard work.

So little Glitchens enjoy what we have for however long we have it and prepare for a completely different type of game.

Please don't throw sharp rocks at me, I hope I'm 100% wrong,

  • I'm sorry don't cry, we can still sing to butterflies nobody can really stop you from doing that just no side benefits.
Posted 17 months ago by xoxJulie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Well, I do think that no-no and gurly drinks were much too powerful before, but the adjustments made were much too drastic.

And it's okay, gypsy!  Just sing your heart (almost all the way) out, and then pop over to the nostalgia lands for an energy refill.  Repeat all you want :)
Posted 17 months ago by larky lion Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @xoxJulie ... i know but *sniffle*
no benefit to singing to them now unless you are trying to die i guess
unless there is joy ... what's the point? and all i can see it does is zap your energy

  • oo larky ... now that is an idea...

  • I'm confused.  I thought you still get XP from butterfly singing.
Posted 17 months ago by larky lion Subscriber! | Permalink
  • good question.. i never did it for the xp points... so not sure

i did it for the goofy fun ... which could last more than a short time at a low level on the gurly drinks once i learned to make them
Posted 17 months ago by Gypsy_woman Subscriber! | Permalink
  • You used to be able to sing to each butterfly eight times per day.  Now you can sing to each butterfly once per day, and gurly drinks will not stop you from losing energy while you do so.  (They will still stop you from losing energy while milking, massaging, nibbling, petting, and squeezing, as far as I know.)
Posted 17 months ago by glum pudding Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Add me to the list of people saddened in the gurly drink and butterfly singing nerfing. Really, really sad. I guess I can re-allocate that spot in the drink bag for something else. As a side benefit, maybe people can stop overpopulating streets with butterflies?
Posted 17 months ago by MaryLiLamb Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I agree with those who say that the adjustments went too far. I think they needed SOME adjustment because sure they made certain game aspects too easy. But yeah...too far. Too much. I'm not sure the point of all the watering down. Why would going live mean we have to water everything down??? Sigh.
Posted 17 months ago by RM Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yeah, I expected some adjustments and there are a few things that I suspect will happen to slow down game play once we go live but I dare not utter them for fear of giving stoot any ideas....
Posted 17 months ago by MaryLiLamb Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The main reason they would water everything down is the need to keep everyone (well new everyone) from getting bored with the game.  People will be playing it for hours and hours day in and day out and if they accomplish what we have as fast as we have they would all be level 70 in three or four weeks.  Then what?  So it stands to reason if they slow the game way, way down and tweak it here and there, make quests really really hard, leveling up to take weeks and even getting a home with included paperwork months the game will stay viable much much longer. The really sad part is we all love the game the way it is now but it has to change once it goes live.  BUTT if it isn't taken over by people's kids it can remain an adult game and it will still be fun.  The best thing to do is enjoy every minute you can playing Glitch the way we love it and when it goes live give it a real chance to still intrigue you.  This game is still miles ahead of anything else out there even with watered down drinks and no drugs.  I'm hoping they leave the purple flower alone and people can still go stark naked or dress like halloween is an everyday event.  Only time will tell how and what Glitch will morph into, I'm hoping for the best with my fingers crossed.  Smile :)

  • xoxjulie, you must have yanked that right out of my brain, thanks for posting that.
Posted 17 months ago by Nanookie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Devs, is there a way of finding a happy medium with the nono, earthshakers and gurly drinks? I never took advantage of any of these while I could - recently been using earthshakers but they run out so fast I was really wondering if it's worth the energy and resources to make them, or whether I should just mine then cook food for energy refill as I used to.
Posted 17 months ago by Violet Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Just to clarify, earthshakers have not been nerfed...I just assume they will be in the future, because they have the same kind of ridonkulous benefit that the other items have.

wait, just read your comment more carefully--have they been nerfed?  I seem to remember they last at least 2 minutes, which is a sizable chunk of time for mining.  Compare that to the time limit on Flaming Humbabas and earthshakers look pretty superhero-y to me.
Posted 17 months ago by Nanookie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Wait what? The no-no powder was useful at one point?

Also, given how darn expensive the earthshakers are, i think they don't last very long.
Posted 17 months ago by Veqtor Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Veqtor, no-no used to last something like ten minutes and you sustained no energy or mood loss during the buff.  As long as you took some more no-no before you crashed (and died), you could keep going indefinitely.  There were many players who lived on no-no, and you can see how it would give you a distinct advantage.   I don't know why I was never really into it, but I wasn't.

Earthshakers are not very expensive, unless you buy them in the mines and they are easy to make, for sure.  Are you buying them in Ilmenskie deeps?  They cost 1/5 of that price if you buy them from Helga in West Spice.
Posted 17 months ago by Nanookie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @ You guys are forgetting to add that whilst on No-No you only gained 1exp for doing anything - which was a comparatively huge disadvantage that we might not fully grasp in beta but would probably be seen as more severe once the game opens
Posted 17 months ago by Taylor Swift Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @TS, I think for some people it is a tradeoff. I would rather have the xp myself but for some, the short burst of high energy output is the higher priority.
Posted 17 months ago by MaryLiLamb Subscriber! | Permalink
  • no-no is for makin' money, not accruing xp.
Posted 17 months ago by Nanookie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @nanookie .. money = xp coz money can buy stuff to donate to giants to gain xp from .. hm, do you even get xp per donation any more?

well .. money can also = xp by using the money to help fuel xp generating activities in general.

by which i mean you get on the no-no, make lots of money, crash and die, resurrect and only THEN use the money to fuel serious xp gains.
Posted 17 months ago by striatic Subscriber! | Permalink
  • +1 to Violet! And yeah, Nanookie, whenever I did no-no it was usually to create things to sell without losing energy/mood. So it was indeed a tradeoff in XP...but good for currants, which I run through like water. Now I can barely finish making what I want. I haven't bothered in a couple tests.

Here's the thing about "slowing things down" for live: They have oodles more content planned. So why slow it down SO much? I think we need a happy medium here.
