New recipes for pretty much everything

I'm not sure if this was discussed or if it is a future feature, but will we be able to make/discover our own recipes? Say, for example, that I have all the blending and cocktail crafting skills. Can I go on to mix my ingredients on my own, with no magically rocky suggestion, to discover a new cocktail?

I'm thinking that the implementation may be something like a large database of cocktails, with a matrix of how different values of fruit, produce, juice, hooch, spice, and ice can be combined to make these cocktails; the catch is that none of this information is known beforehand. Suggestions could be made once a month for new items to be added to the database, with no hint being made of the ingredients that go into them.

The more intensive and possibly impossible solution would be to allow any edible product to make a recipe, but let the players "make" personal recipes by writing notes that can be permanent saved in a special case (recipe box or some such). The basics of such a system would be that the edibles all have certain properties, and a particular algorithm can calculate the food's properties (color, container, mood, energy, xp, bonus mood, etc.) for you.

  • I've heard in various interviews of the Glitch-masters that this type of experimentation and exploration is a key goal for Glitch. I'm sure it will be difficult to "hide" things, be they Items, Skills, etc., once somebody figures it out, in a sense "ruining it" for everyone else.

But it is a great and admirable goal; Walloping Big Diamond + Entropy = Creamsicle

  • +1. New recipes should be discovered by mixing random things, but some recipes can only be discovered after a certain achievement or skill.

As for your last suggestion, it's possible but improbable. Too much work to iron out the kinks, manage it, etc. There are a lot of issues with automatically generated content in general, and everything often ends up being pretty similar. Here's my version of your idea:

Recipes, rather than being exact number ratios, could be ranges, and the properties of the drink could vary slightly depending on the exact numbers, but being careless would result in bad things. That mirrors real food a little more, and gives more freedom!

    Example: Cloud 11 Smoothie:

Current recipe: 11 cloudberries, 1 banana, 1 honey, 1 butterfly milk

"Gradient" recipe: 10-15 cloudberries, 0-1 bananas, 1-2 honey, 0-2 butterfly milk

    Different boosts:
-You only get the Sky Cruisin' buff if you include banana and butterfly milk.
-You get extra mood if you include more honey OR butterfly milk.
-Extra energy if you include more cloudberries.

    Different risks:
-Including 2 honey AND 2 butterfly milk causes a stomach ache
-Including 14-15 cloudberries but no butterfly milk causes your drink to be watery (mood penalty).

    Thoughts?

  • Wow, when you put it that way Robot, it sounds pretty damn cool. I'm sure the recipe system will undergo a significant change soon, as it's just not an important part of the game whatsoever right now. This particular suggestion could really improve the depth of cooking, if the devs are careful with it.

Maybe some things could even give negative buffs... like maybe if you screw up the earthshaker you become completely unable to use your pick or something like that.

  • Nice one, Aldaris. Bad Earthshaker could give you the shakes, meaning you couldn't wield a pick! Sky's definitely the limit, but you're right, we'd need to be careful about it.

  • If we have 20 possible ingredients and all recipes have 4 items, we'll have 5,000 possibilities to run through, probably more in reality. It won't necessarily be as bad as that sounds.

  • @RobotGymnast

I really like this mechanic! It's a good, workable combination of both my suggestions and it adds massive depth to the 'craftiness' of the game.
