not able to harvest someone else's plantings - have to wait

"Another player planted those seeds, give them time to snag them up!"

When someone else plants on a home street or in community gardens and I come and water and tend - and then I can't even harvest many of them - doesn't seem right. How long does one have to wait? Most people just tend and plant and leave for other parts and don't even remember where or when they planted something. It made sense to limit and control harvesting before, when we only had public gardens to share and plant in and people stood around guarding their plants, but now practically everyone has their own garden and access to many gardens.  This new rule does not make any sense now and is very frustrating -- especially when you're completely out of energy and can't even pluck a tomato to eat before dying... among other things.

  • 30 seconds.

. . . . and totally called it.  Said these complaints would be the result of any mechanic put in place to stop people from whining about "griefers" in public gardens.

Not a new rule by the way.  It predates the housing tests.

  • or 60, one of those.

  • Public gardens on home streets are exactly that, public gardens. The person who planted still has a right to claim their herbs/crops.

  • It's sixty I'm fairly sure, Sauce :) I tend to have to wait around on my street if some of the flowers sprout up in my plots. It doesn't bother me though. It's nice that another's plants are protected if they stick around on my street and use their own guano yadda yadda, same old argument ;)

  • Oh I don't really care much either way.  I'm just smugly enjoying the fulfillment of my "glitch prophecy"

  • Public gardens are pubic gardens? What are we growing crabs now?! Glitch sure has gotten more perverse lately!

  • it's not very long to wait and was a welcome introduction to the game mechanics when first introduced several months ago.

  • Ew- not touching my garden now! Don't want crabs- they only want to listen to music all day long!

  • I never liked that 60 second claim to ownership.   Its even more distasteful when its on a home street.   If its public nobody should get dibbs.   And if you are concerned about the investment made in planting then what about the investment that the home owner has made by cultivating their street?   Why should someone else get first dibbs on the harvest?

Its not an issue about the amount of time you have to wait; its an issue about ownership rights.

  • Yes, Treesa, I agree. And the devs made a decision on the issue. The decision was to lock the crops for 60 seconds. There was quite a bit of yelling at the time and they didn't change their minds, I doubt they will now.

  • That decision happened before home streets were created.

  • I think it was a good compromise for the community gardens, considering the issues at the time. I think it's still a good thing for the community gardens.

I can see how it might be annoying on home streets, but I don't think it's that big of a deal since it's such a short lock. If I come across locked crops, it doesn't feel like it takes very long before I can harvest them. I don't think it's likely that very many people are taking advantage of that lock on other people's home streets.

  • If someone takes advantage on a home street, the owner has the option of kicking them out. Seems like that would take care of the problem in short order.

  • The OP sounds more like a complaint about a bug than like a complaint about the way the lock is supposed to work.  Sometimes players are unable to harvest other players' plantings, period, regardless of how long they wait.

  • eh, it's 60 seconds... if someone is dedicated enough to be around in the minute after a crop they planted is ready, then fine...

if you're that close to death and you have no other source of energy than harvesting a tomato, I suggest you just go buy a stack of tomatoes and keep it for emergencies. And consider ramping up your energy management skills from negligible to "has a tomato"

  • ' And consider ramping up your energy management skills from negligible to "has a tomato" ' is now my single favourite line I have ever read in the forums. Ever.

  • I love the 60 second rule, especially for my home street! When I'm out and about, I get a message that my crops are ready. I know they are safe for at least 60 seconds. Or, if you do plant in a community garden, this allows you to utilize more than one garden at a time. The notice gives you time to 'Tele' bounce back and forth. Of course, you need to time your plantings to allow for the 3 minute cool down.

  • I'm on two herb routes and have over 100 herb plots on my street, so it's very rare that I actually harvest the plants I plant, which means I usually have to wait the 60 seconds to harvest anything new on my street.

If you can't find something to do in glitch for 60 seconds, you're doing it wrong.

  • You would have to see the long, repeated threads about stealing crops to appreciate the value of the 60 second rule, simply for the end to the circular debates.
