An unfortunate lesson....

Many folks have expressed shock and dismay over finding their trees poisoned or piggy feeders, etc. taken from their front yards. It is a shame people do those things to be sure. I would, however, like to share a cautionary tale. Many people on Glitch are kind and trustworthy. Let, however, the smiling little faces fool you not: some others are anything but.  I had precisely 4, just 4 people with keys to my house. I logged in today to find missing:

2 old style tree poisons
5 old style tree antidotes
over 100 music boxes
roughly 90 wine of the dead
a thousand or so plain ingots
a few thousand eggs
a few hundred metal rods
10 or so diamonds
a couple dozen moonstones
over 40 crystals
all my jellisacs, fuel cells, white gas, and so on.

(Yes, I had my max SDB's full of things of even greater value except for the poisons, but using an SBD for two units seemed silly. At the time. And I mistakenly thought cabinets were secure. My own fault.)

Yep. Just four people had keys. Oh yeah. 1 of them appears not to have been on in months and the other three (all of them I gather are friends in RL) I befriended as newish players and gave 10's of thousands of currants to as gifts to get started over the past few weeks. Hows that for gratitude?

My gut would love to post all of their names as a warning to others, but I won't stoop to their level. I've been taken for hundred's of thousands of currants (not looking for sympathy -  I have plenty still and I take full responsibility for handing my keys out) by some players who seemed friendly and trustworthy. I hope that TS can find a way to give us some better in-house security for our belongings, as this has just taken me permanently out of the house sharing community, which is really a shame given that it can be quite fun at times. Regardless, the fault is mine; I knew the risks and I accepted them. And I got burned badly.

It's a game and hardly worth the time it took me to type this post, but I offer it up as a sad reminder that people are not always what they at first seem to be. That not only does casual, opportunistic petty theft happen here, but that there are also players who may take the time to earn your trust and friendship and then rob you blind when the opportunity presents itself. As it is in RL, so it is in Glitch. Both the good and the bad. Caveat lector.

  • Wow. That is effing awful. You have my sympathy. And I'm glad you posted.

Did you check if perhaps it might be a bug? I supposed that is a possibility.

    Even so. D:

  • Omg. I am so sorry for you..
Is there anything I can help you with? Though I dont have lots things.

  • Can we do ANYTHING at this point to change our keyholder list, or are we just out of luck while the keyrings are not visible?
Posted 7 months ago by Eleanor Rigby Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I am told by Help channel that blocking and unblocking everyone with keys is the only way to do it. Of course you can't even see a list of who has keys atm, so that may not be easy if you have a lot out.

@Flowery Pott. Yes, I have also posted a "help request" on the outside chance that this is some kind of bug I've been hit with. Hope springs eternal.

And thanks for the kind words, all.

  • Eleanor, right now, since we don't have keys and a list of keyholders, the only way you can unkey someone is to block them, and then unblock them. Anyone who has a key to your place when you do this will have key rights revoked, and be off your friendslist. You can, of ccourse, unblock them from their profile page and refriend them. That seems to be the only solution until we get a keyring back. Anyone who had a key to your house still has one and can still enter.

That said, I'm sorry to hear that happened to you Koftun. That sucks royally.

  • This really seems like the sort of theft that could and should be investigated by CSI:Glitch (the devs) because it's a huge hit. Not a feeder in your yard, but a serious breech of the TOS in the form of player-on-player abuse.

Sometimes I think the no-call-outs policy serves to protect the wicked more than it protects the innocent.

  • I take that tale to heart.  The only people who have keys to my house are my wife and a good RL friend I have known for a decade.

  • Trust is a fool's bargain and distrust is a fearful man's cage.

It's sad to say the least.

Also be warned, knowing somebody for a decade or two in no way insures they will not start stealing from you regardless of what you have been through together. Take it from one who knows.

  • OMFG!!! Jerks! That's a lot of stuff, and that must have taken a few trips!!!! Wow, I am so sorry! I guess blocking will ensue?

  • That's horrifying, very sorry that happened to you.  There are trust-worthy people out there, it's just that those folks were not it.

  • Ugh.  So sorry to hear you got scammed.  I think if TS is going to disallow callouts in the forums, they need to suspend the accounts of people who behave this way.

  • Goodness, that's absolutely awful. How can people feel justified to do this stuff? Report the three keyholders and see if devs can tell ya which one it was?

  • *hugs* I'm so sorry that these folks betrayed your trust and are pure evil. Thank you for the cautionary tale. If there's anything I can do, please let me know. I'm still pretty much a baby glitch, but I'd gladly help with some basic resources and other items. IM me sometime if you like even if you just want to chat or vent.  Just a thought, I wonder if we could have an anonymous noticeboard type thing where we can blacklist these mean spirited toons. Of course, I can see that some might black list people out of spite as is sometimes human nature, but you know, these folk should NOT get away with it.

  • So sorry about that...but please IM me for resources to rebuild your stuff!

  • I agree with SeerQueen, report the problem and let the Dev's sort it out, this should be against TS TOS so they should be able to do something about it.
If you need help in building up your resources again please IM me, hoarder par excellence here :)

  • I don't trust anyone in this game

  • Many thanks to all the awesome Glitchen who have expressed sympathy, offered resources, sent gifts, etc on this thread, by mail and by IM. Your kindness and generosity stands in such stark contrast to what I described in my initial post. You all give me a great reminder that jerks are in all honesty a very small fraction of the people we interact with each day. That's a reminder I really needed today, so thank you.

Also, and I do not mean to sound ungrateful *at all*, please know that I am really just fine in terms of resources, currants, etc. Your gifts and offers are truly appreciated, but I would rather you save them for someone else who needs that more than I do. :-)

And for those who expressed their concern, I have revoked all keys (I think) via blocking and have reported all I know to devs. If I have unfriended or blocked an innocent party, please accept my apologies but this was kinda an all or nothing situation.

Lastly, to those who asked for identities of the keyholders, as much as a part of me would like to share that, I can't. It's not because of TS's policy on call-outs (I didnt know there was one), but rather that I won't risk damaging an innocent party's name by sharing the list. If something needs to be done, I will trust that the devs do whatever is in order, if anything at all.

    Thanks again,

    -K

  • Well handled, Koftun. +1

  • uh yah, nice but they wont care i bet.  a key given to someone is a free for all for them to clean out your house.

sorry, i know that sounds sorta cold but thats how they tend to treat situations like that.

when keys were first available to be shared, someone had cleaned out another glitches cabinet within about an hour.  so, its nothing new and the problems were there from the start.

  • ditto on Tribeca's comment!!  Very well handled, Koftun  +1!!  Sadly it is for this reason that I didn't give out keys. Not that I didn't want to but, I didn't want something like this to happen and then not knowing who had done it, suspecting all.

  • I love it when it turns out nicer at the end of a situation. I hope the person who stole your stuff realises and repents even just a little. Plus I agree, nicely handled.

  • I wanna hire these guys! If anyone of you who did the stealing see this comment, IM me in game, you can join my crew of thieves! I'm serious, and I pay well.

  • For those of you who think it is just a laugh to be a thief in the game, how you treat people is always *real*, no matter if the context is a game, at work, or at a party.  If someone trusts you, then betrayal hurts them terribly, no matter whether what you took or destroyed seems trivial to you.  I had nearly the same thing to me IRL; I had "best friends" that helped me move into my house, had me over for holiday dinners, celebrated birthdays with me, and acted like people I could truly believe in in so many other ways.  Then they stole a bunch of stuff out of my house, including a bank card, and started draining my bank account until I got the next statement, and lied directly to my face about it.  Thanks to family and reasonable bank policies, I got most of the money back.  I still don't have back any chance of trusting people with anything important to me, or that lovely idea that many people here want to have that all people are really good if you just give them a chance.

  • @Mereret - That's why I'm only friends with blue people these days! Can't trust anyone else, really.
Posted 7 months ago by Messy Monster Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Mereret it is sad world in which we live. When it really comes down to it most people will lie, cheat, and steal from their lifelong friends as soon as the going gets tough and most will be too pathetic to even own up to their actions afterwards even when they have been caught red handed. You can always go split their heads open like a rotting pumpkin but then you are no better than they are.

Trust is a fool's bargain and distrust is a fearful man's cage.

  • Wait... wouldn't buying a new house drop all of the key holders specifically? If you have barely anything in your house, then it'd be worth it (if you wanted to do so, that is). Or at least changing houses revoked keys in the past . . .
Posted 7 months ago by usterka Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The key revoked when changing houses only apply to the old housing. Those you gave your keys to can still access your /home.

This also applies if the Glitch in question no longer has any of the old housing (of which I have several on my Friends list).

  • Poor u! Now I feel bad for you. I hope that whoever did this will own up and return all that is rightfully yours! Please devs help her get her stuff back and catch who did this. Its not right should they get away with her stuff!

  • @Melting Sky, just link to this, if you have to ;)

Anyway... I'm sorry to hear what happened, koftun, I had given 75 keys to people in my bog house in the past, and a minor things have gone wrong, and I was to have complained about it. Luckily, they did not steal any of my 200+ poison. haha.

If you need help of any sort, just let me know.

  • NO ONE gets in my house, precious.

They wants to take things, filthy thieves. They'll take and take and wants more still, but they'll never get in precious. Never! We'll keep the doors locked, we will. Lock the doors, blocks the windows, and wait for thems. Oh yes! We'll wait for thems, precious, and we will make them pay for their treacherous ways!

Do I need to mention that I just watched the full 10+ hour extended edition of Lord of the Rings? XD
    ------------
On a serious note though, it's an unfortunate situation, but it's also why I never let anyone have a key. I knew I was missing out on a potentially fun aspect of the game, but I'm a packrat as well and had way too much stuff in the home to just leave for internet friends to look through. I enjoy the direction we're going with storage boxes, and hope other steps are being considered, allowing us to open our homes for more personal interactions. In fact, I'm going to go post one in the idea forum now. :)

ETA: Made the idea post, feel free to comment on it here:
