Are Glitchen gendered?

Seriously. I hardly feel like my glitch has any gender, and certainly the naked bodies are pretty completely neutral. having said *that* though, some of the clothing does show secondary sexual characteristics. This isn't meant to be a weird sort of a question, either, its just that when RP or addressing others in-world its hard to know what pronouns to use. All of the glitchen seem vaguely feminine to me (definitely *not* a problem there), but it is no more than a vague feeling.

Opinions anyone?

  • Although it would certainly be possible to create a gender-neutral glitch in Wardrobe and Vanity, I find most glitchen read as pretty much male or female in their appearance.

  • My thoughts on the subject have always been that while Glitchen often appear to be more like one gender or the other, they are born straight from the imagination of the Giants, rather than any sort of... uh... "interaction". As such, they have no need of gender, and thus are genderless.

  • Only our non Ur culture reads clothes as belonging to one gender or the other.

I am genderless IRL, although some days I can be read more as male or female, but mostly due to the own conditioning of the person reading me. I , personally, don´t mind male or female pronouns, but if it bothers you not to know which one to use on fellow Glitchens, why not use a gender neutral pronoun like ze or co?

  • Glitchen have no gender, by design of the Giants. Gender is all in our minds in Ur.

  • you could just use "they" like glitch does for tii :)

  • I find it so hard to comprehend that "syntax error" suggests using the common, but thoroughly wrong, pronoun THEY to refer to a single being.

  • "They" as a singular is actually an old, previously discontinued usage. But there're a variety of reasonably valid gender-neutral pronouns, including "they" out there. Whichever people use doesn't really bother me.

"It" has depersonalizing connotations though, which is why not many people use it for sentient beings. Unless they really want to depersonalize them (our world can be a sad one sometimes).

  • @Kookaburra: just making a suggestion based on something already in game! (also, many people prefer others refer to them using "they", wrong according to prescriptivists or not!)

  • syntax error - I was just kidding. I love your name and it got me going. "They" is one of those things that I have to learn to live with or else I will go batty. Or more batty. Or batshit. Oh wait, that is guano and is valuable.

  • And this is why AVEN recommended this site. :P

My avatar reads female, but I personally am a ze/zir. I like the idea that Glitchen are genderless beings by nature.

  • I find that most Glitchen are not offended if you mistakenly use an incorrect gender pronoun and will just correct you politely if they care enough to do so. Of course you can also just ask.

I am rather pedantic about these things and would appreciate an authoritative reference, if you have one. Please note that I use "they" as a gender neutral pronoun IRL and don't have a problem with it. It would just be nice to have a citation for that use as I don't have one.

  • Glitchen are gender neutral by design, but most users definititititly give their glitch a more male or female appearance.

  • @BarryW: From the OED:

    "they, pronoun

    2. Often used in reference to a singular noun made universal by every any no, etc., or applicable to one of either sex (= ‘he or she’)."

With quotations dating back to 1526.

  • Just ask people when you come across them!  If you do it politely, and explain you just want to know how they want to be called, I dont think anyone will be offended.

  • Mine has male tendencies.
You'd have to be a pretty odd ladyperson to opt for his haircut.

I assume they're neutral in gender, but with masculine, feminine or neuter brains. (Depending on what RL spirit they're channelling?)

  • If it isn't abundantly clear, ask. Only the most thin-skinned person would be offended that you were seeking a way not to potentially offend. :)

But, logically speaking, if someone has a "feminine" name and is wearing "feminine" clothing and "feminine" hair, 99.9% of the time you'll probably be safe using feminine pronouns (and vice versa).

Also, if I say "dudes" or "guys," I am not assuming you are males. I was just alive during the 80s and we talked like that. My bads.

  • @Lighthousekeeper: Thanks for the reference. Just what I was looking for. I am certainly surprised that the usage dates back to the 16th century. I won't feel bad when I use it that way now.

  • @ Kaja Rainbow: I'm unsure what you mean. They has a discontinued usage yet you feel its still floating around?
I have many friends that identify as genderqueer or otherwise that use they as a pronoun. I feel that it's hardly been discontinued, but I'm not sure if thats what you're saying.

  • I don't think so.   I have always made a point of ignoring the gender specific hair and clothes and just going for whatever I feel like.   I usually come out looking more female than male but one shouldn't have to be confined to that.

  • @September Varay -- what she said was "previously discontinued," meaning it wasn't used for a while, but now it is again.  I don't agree, mind you -- I think that there were grammarians who made up rules insisting that it shouldn't be used, and that new grammarians are now starting to say that it can be used.  I just don't believe there was a period in there where it fell out of actual usage.

  • i wanted my little glitch to resemble RL me and it does in aperance and wardrobe pretty much, but it looks pretty distinctly male. even i start to think of him as male, so even though IRL i am a nondescript middle aged lady, i do not bother to correct people who assume i am male.

meh. unless your glitch needs to have sex with my glitch AND you're fussy about gender, it's probably not important.

  • I came to this thread because I was curious how to change my Glitch's gender. I assumed it had been chosen by me as female at one point and I had forgotten doing it. The reason I assumed that is due to the hairstyles. I do not see any of the common masculine hairstyles, but I do see a lot of feminine ones. Any thoughts?
Posted 13 months ago by Kashtana Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @September Varay: My apologizes for my confusing wording. I meant that it used to be more common usage, then fell out of that, but now it's becoming more common again. I'd have to find a source on this, though, but I do recall reading that. Though "I recall reading that somewhere" isn't really the best citation, heh.

  • One of the default no-subscribtion hairstyles screeches 'masculine' at me. It's on one of the two default 'masculine' avatar choices. The 'reclining hairline' one.

Personally, I feel that most of the most colorful 'pretty' clothes and accessories are feminine. I'd like to see that change. But the whole way that 'clothes' are organized is gender-specific. We're forced into the mindset wether we wish to or not.

Its tempting to drag all our gender stuff from the real world into Ur with us, might be more fun if we didn't.

  • @Parrow:  That is exactly my point. "One" hairstyle looks masculine. There are at least two that look masculine to me, actually. Two out of how many? I know girls wear a lot more hairstyles, but guys have more than two as a choice.
