in BeTa - people with subscriptions are paying 2 be beta testers?

So let me get this straight I’m paying Tiny Speck to be a Beta tester. As a security web dude I understand that you need to bring this back to Beta to work on features and network utilization2rendering to increase the users experience switching server farm to adjust to peak payload to a better utilization, internationalized it and other troll science to make the Giants happy. The refinement of the beginners to be better able to understand Glitch and let the community and the experience users to build more and be more creative will make it a better game.
I really think this game can be a game changer like Twitter and Facebook if you allow outside developers to integrate it to the different social networks also the community can and will help.  But what is Tiny Speck going to do for US subs as we provide you with good solid user data to make it more scaleable while we pay you- As they say in  NYC what in it for me---. As you can see by your stats you have a winner in Glitch, but look at what happened to Google+ the exclusiveness may not work like it did on Facebook. But I ramble too much.
Anyway I just wanted to put out some questions. I been monitoring this game with Lil’ Snitch and it’s really interesting on this end. I’m a paranoid security dude so I always check. Any comments on my ramblings would be welcome.
"Hay how about a “cat” for the house. Or maybe a dog. COme on take the “piggy and bat” code and render a dog or a kitty."
I love to see the developers stuff open up more. I know you all don’t have time but outside developers can add a lot of value to this project.

  • Most of the perks that you pay for as a subscriber are non-playing items that you will retain after the beta period is once again over.  Plus the fact that if I remember what I read, they are doubling the subscription times to extend what you're getting.

Tiny Speck, please, oh, please, don't integrate further with Facebook.

(I don't think they're going to regardless.  these folks aren't like that crappy Z company)

  • Their is more to Social Network integration than just linking friends. Community is about sharing and cyberspace is open to a lot of cool Flash tools to build Art in my Home or maybe an Origami who kown's but integration with outside tools is great for a community as this. At least I think so.

  • I think of subscriptions as a way of supporting the Tiny Speck family even if it's gone back to beta. I don't see it as "what's in it for me?" I figure since we can play for free, it's pretty great to be able to give something back.

  • In retrospect, I realize my comment could have been phrased differently.

I'm not just being a smartass but actually curious as to why this is news to you now.  Are you unaware that you can get a refund for every penny you've spent?

  • GaTo420, there is a separate area of the Glitch site devoted to the developer API.
You might enjoy taking a look?  It's fun stuff.

  • Nobody ever said anything about a refund. What's in it for ME is a very real question. As a developer I understand more about the problems that Tiny Speck is having and why the call to Beta. The real questions is " ?Why can't I get a gAto(cat) for my house?" what can outside developers do to support this project. software developers, Network groups, Security policies, practices, user encryption of data, SSL, and disaster recovery, Graphic designers, artist, Documentation of Code and manuals. There's a lot of work that as a community we can really help.
Maybe Glitchen are so caught up in Glitch that they don't see the scope of this project. Read "Snow Crash" and see the MetaVerse that Glitch may become. We can become something bigger if we work together.

  • @Parrow I agree that Tiny Spec aren't like that crappy Z company, but the game will probably be bought out by crappy Z company later on.

  • This is a terrible idea that would ruin the entire game.

If just any schmuck could throw in whatever, you kill the art style. If just any coder writes stuff in, it can cause conflicts with existing gameplay. And as the suggestion forum shows, most ideas the community has are bad. Like, "giving adam sandler another movie" bad.

  • I think the last thing most people want here is another Second Life - is that the closest we've seen to the Metaverse? - with developers writing their own in-game elements.  I *really* don't want graphic designers to be able to add infinite content (that my friends will then push on me via FB).  I want to play the game the company has written, a finite world with curated choices.  Tiny Speck have made quite a lot of tools available to developers within certain parameters, and if you can't find something there that's "in it for you" then maybe for now at least this just isn't going to be your game.

  • Glitch is not some open-source virtual reality.

    It's a game.

It's a game produced by a private company, through private funds.

This is not the Singularity you are looking for.

  • JAck And Jill was a very good Movie. Leave Mr. Sandler out of this if you don't have good comedy taste well get a ticket and spin the wheel.  Yes Thank's you for the API link I downloaded some of the avatar animation code to play with. This will keep me happy for a while Thanks and for the trolls-- no-- ah no no ah-- don;t feed the trolls - Take a deep breath ahhhh I get 40 mood point for that''' Thanks GaTiCoS

  • In short, yes.

I asked, they said suck it up, get a refund and leave if you want.

Funny how one of the press releases, or maybe it was an interview, made a big deal about it being almost as good as the subscription being paused if you could get a refund, wait until it's out of beta, and then buy the time again.

Problem is we wouldn't get the half price deal now would we?

The funny thing is, I find myself not minding.  They game is just as worth it now, as it was before it unlaunched.

Though it wouldn't stop me from asking for a 1 month bonus to my subscription if the 2nd beta lasts more then a month.

  • What's in it for you?  You can play the game if you want, you don't have to play the game if you don't want, you can put money in it and get vanity items if you want, you can get all your money back if you don't want.

What else did you expect, a cookie?

  • I actually started subscribing once we went back to beta because I believe my money is actually going to support an interesting and supportive staff. Really, now more than ever they need our support as a community.

  • ...why are you trying to make Glitch a social network, again?
Posted 12 months ago by Spaghetti Thompson Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It would be nice for there to be a gateway into Glitch from 'the Metaverse' at some point in the future, if 'the Metaverse' ever exists.  But Glitch is the creative work of a single team working in unision, not 'the Metaverse.'  If anything, it's more of a sculpture garden on a cul-de-sac in one town in the Metaverse.

I read Snow Crash about seventeen years ago.  But I read John Brunner's Shockwave Rider about 30 years ago and he did a better job of it IMHO.  The literature does not start and end with Neal Stephenson.  I think The Big U is his most entertaining work of fiction so far, to be honest.

I'm not sure we're ready for the Metaverse.  Instead of the net sucking us all into it, all the growth seems to be the net reaching out into real life, i.e. mobile development.  So the real world is 'out there' not inside a CPU somewhere, and the net will continue to develop as an extended super-central-nervous-system, not the body as a whole.

  • in my opinion, the developers are in the process of shaping Glitch so everyone can eventually pitch in whatever is on their mind and do as thou wilt, create as thou imagineth. As for the real question of whether outside help is welcomed, it would probably be something that would not be easily given access to due to security concerns, possible tampering of codes, etc. As a programmer myself I understand why it would not be probable for outside developers (i.e, those not employed by TS) to gain access to Glitch's codes and network layout, even in honest-to-goodness wanting to assist and help out in making the game grow due to these security / coding concerns.

As for subscriptions during beta, yes I do think of it as a way for us as loyal beta testers to continue supporting the developers during these troubled times to keep the game stable, running, and continuously growing. TS took a huge step, a rather risky one at that, to ensure that the game keeps moving forward, and (IMO) having explained it quite well to its customers, we are ensured that eventually we'll be getting a run for the money that we're spending now.

  • I chose to become a subscriber before the "back to beta" thing, and didn't even cross my mind to discontinue after.

Main reason comes from knowing what it's like to be a small indie company with an awesome idea and trying hard to make it work. To me it's like saying "Guys, you do a great job, I enjoy it immensely; here's a little something to show my appreciation and support you a little so you can keep working on your dream and making it better for the rest of us."

  • To address your specific question of getting a cat, I'm sure TS are thinking about it, as a lot of people have asked.  But  I don't think they'd welcome an outside offer to do that bit of code and add it to the game, because it isn't as simple as dropping a different image onto the existing animations.  Would cats be like the piggies, dying in our yards from lack of food?  A lot of people would find that incredibly upsetting.  Or would the streets quickly be overrun with feral cats that live on air, like the chickens?   That also seems ill-advised.  TS are trying to make  a coherent and fun world here, not an infinitely expanding and variable one, and they're making thoughtful adjustments and additions to it - maybe not the ones some players would choose to prioritize, but it's TS's game.

  • Here's an idea: introduce both skunks and cats. Skunks feed on cats, cats feed on skunks. Each player can grow either 1 skunk or - mutually exclusive - a cat each RL day. Tally the population numbers each week :)

  • Yeah, I'm paying them. 1 year Moly subscription.
They took it back to beta, they offered me the opportunity to cancel.
    I said no.
    I like these people.
    I want to support them.
    So I'm doing it.
Does that make me an idiot?
    Perhaps.
But I'm a zealot. Proud of it.
And I support my friends at TS.
    YMMV.

  • Wait... Jack and Jill was a good movie

You lost me. I think I'll stick with my bad comedy taste.

Also, I dunno if basing the mechanics and expansion of a game on a cyberpunk novel published nearly 20 years ago exactly counts as a sound business model.
Posted 12 months ago by Djabriil Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Djabriil I don't mean to start anything but I kinda agree about Jack and Jill. I mean I like Adam Sandler and he has done a lot of good movies like Mr. Deeds or Billy Madison, but this movie....

When I was watching it in the theaters with my friends barely anyone laughed at all in the whole place. If this is the definition of good comedy then I'm proud to say I have bad comedy taste then as well.

  • @Vinchon- yeah. It just made me sad overall, and this might be the first time I've ever heard anybody say it was a "good movie", which sorta took me aback a little bit.

  • I don't think the OP was talking about a game adaptation of Snow Crash.  Some of the concepts in the book, namely the Metaverse, are much bigger than the book as a work of fiction.

I would cringe to see an 'adaptation' of Snow Crash into a movie.  Hollywood is clueless about anything really interesting.  They should stick to movies that make vampire sexual predators into heroes for preadolescent girls.  Oh... wait...

  • @Parrow Gnolle- I didn't think he was implying that the game should be based on the Metaverse. I guess what I'm getting at is that it's not really the same thing, Glitch and the Metaverse. Surely Second Life is closer in execution? And besides, while it's an interesting concept, like you stated, it's the vision of a team, rather than an all-encompassing smorgasbord of virtual worlds. And I dunno that banding together is going to have any effect on that, or should. It just seems as though I've heard the very same thing said about a lot of other games, but it doesn't really apply here. I'm not in favor of patches, user-generated or otherwise 3rd-party add-ons in-game- the Glitch API tools I'm fine with, but those aren't chunks of somebody else's vision inserted into a street somewhere. I think this place would start to look really silly and mish-mash after about a day or two of that, and a lot of what gives Glitch a unique look would be ruined. Nevermind the lag, the tools introduced to grief or steal, and the badly-done and poorly thought out bits and pieces added in that would mangle economy, mechanics and others' game-play, whether inadvertently or not. Besides, I have no desire to run across a Naruto or Spongebob avatar, either.
