Donating is too "mathy". Make shrine favor roll over past emblem breakpoints and confirm emblems.

Right now shrine donations are very "mathy" if you don't care to lose currants.  Spending emblems is a vast improvement, but I still feel compelled to get my calculator every time I donate to a shrine. There are two problems:
1) Favor past an emblem breakpoint is discarded.
2) Emblems are only ever worth 1000 favor when used on a skill, so shrine capacity over 1000 is lost if you overdonate.

You can lose SERIOUS amounts of favor if you don't check the shrine first, or don't get out your calculator and donate to a very precise point - either just shy of the emblem for training or right at the emblem if you're working on icons.  It seems to me that this is not very intuitive to have in a game.  I have two suggestions that would make things much better:

1) Roll shrine donations over past emblem breakpoints.  If I put 1000 favor into a 1200 capacity shrine at 600 favor, 600 is applied to the emblem, which pops out into my hand, and 400 stays in the shrine towards the next emblem.
2) If a player is going to donate enough to create an emblem, the shrine should ask for confirmation.  That way a player wanting to spend 1499 points on training at a 1500 point shrine isn't stuck with an emblem only worth 1000 if they miscalculate.

  • +1  If I'm donating a stack of items to a shrine, I have to calculate out exactly how many to reach the next emblem.  I'd much prefer if the system would calculate for me and tell me that only 10 are needed for the emblem, and the other 14 will be wasted.  Buttons to Cancel, Get Emblem, or Donate All would be great.  I know sometimes the calculations can be complicated by the donation also tipping over a level, quest, achievement or whatever, but starting with just the basics would be nice.

  • Hrm....respectfully disagree.  Giants are a fickle bunch.  Please don't start dumbing down the game after only a month.  With respect to the OP's desire for clarity (what will this donation give me?), I agree that the favor mechanism could be clearer.  In my opinion, you should have donating 2 things to a shrine be part of the tutorial - one of low currant value and one of mid so that a player can see how it affects favor.

If super precision is needed, players can use spreadsheets.

  • @Bobloogow, this is a simple game of running around a virtual world clicking on flapping chickens and sparkly rocks.  Why should one suddenly be compelled to get out a calculator or spreadsheet when it comes to throwing things into a shrine?  It's a complete disconnect.  If you want a complex, mathy game I would respectfully suggest EVE Online.

  • I agree with this.  I can do the maths in my head but I still have to stop to do it (and check info on stuff like music boxes, since they can be all kinds of costs).

There should probably be a limit on it though, so hardcore miners don't grind for a pile of 3000 sparkly (the way in which hardcore mining churns out currants and income like nothing else in the game and creates a 2-speed economy in Glitch is a separate issue but one I'm sure the devs know about) and just shove it in all at once on one charge of extremely hallowed shrine powder to get a bunch of emblems at once.  Maybe a limit on how much bonus favour you can get per charge of shrine powder... anyone donating that much in one hit can at least do a little math for it.

  • There is already a very restrictive daily cap on shrine favor and XP.  The favor cap for a given giant is the shrine capacity at the start of the Glitch day.  Additional donations give no favor. I don't know how the XP cap is calculated but I usually run into it after two or three shrines.

  • Or at least some kind of warning:

"You will get X favor from this item, X favor will be lost."

  • Maybe in the interim you'd be interested in my FavorSaver?  It helps with calculating shrine donation amounts, even with complex priorities and shrine powder involved!

For favor rolling over past the emblem!

  • I quite like the fact that I lose out every so often. It makes it all a bit of a gamble if you can't be bothered to work it out. It's exciting. Will I go over the top and get an emblem? No I didn't! Yay! Bit like opening a cubimal box. It's easy enough to gather or make enough more stuff to donate; experience and favour are pretty easy to acquire.
I like experimenting with chucking things in and seeing how much favour I get, and the possiblity of losing benefit just adds an edge.

I don't have strong feelings about which way this goes, just another perspective.

  • I agree with Pomponella.

Also, sometimes the shrines give bonus favour with donations, so calculating isn't always 100% accurate anyway. I once donated two diamonds + EHSP with the intention of getting 1200 favour only to end up with 1400 that kicked me over the emblem limit.

I don't really mind either way. :) I'm fine with things as they are but I can see benefits with your suggestions too.

  • +1 It'd be nice to get the full worth for the last item donated before the emblem.

  • I have to agree with this.  This is the only element of the game that I feel the need to use a spreadsheet for.  Admittedly it is a very simple spreadsheet, but still.

The rollover thing would be nice, as would being able to see how much favour you can still gain today without having to make an over-donation.  If I can get 4400 more favour in the day then the only way to find out currently is to offer a donation worth more than that and then subtract the maximum from the current favour in the dialog that pops up.

  • While only partially related, I created a new interface for shrines (with pretty pictures!) and I'd love for people to give their thoughts and weigh in on the forum post - http://www.glitch.com/forum/ideas/11299/

  • Oh, PLEASE change the system at least so that rolling over the emblem breakpoint doesn't cause your remaining favor to be discarded. Seriously, are the giants THAT cruel?
Posted 13 months ago by Brokenpipe Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Also, it seems that if you donate and hit the emblem limit, you only get about 60XP whereas if I donate to reach one less than the emblem barrier I can get a ton more XP. Then I can just throw in one meat for the 60XP and emblem. I found this out the hard way of donating about 1800 favor points worth of stuff in one go only to get 60XP. A bit off topic but it kinda fits in the rollover idea. I love me some levelling.

  • Gawd. These things are so easy. Just find the favor you get from an item and multiply it. Its not hard thing. Find items that have simple favors, like Mean, Tin Ingots, Moly Ingots, etc. If you put enough in to get an emblem, you should know you are donating enough to get an emblem.

  • +1 Total agreement to both points. I too rely on a calculator when I donate, especially now that I've been using EH Shrine Powder so often. I have to count the favor per 100 stacks of sparkly (80) times however many hundreds (3? 4?) I can fit without getting an emblem and THEN still take into account the x3 multiplier for shrine powder. It's not difficult, it's just arithmetic, but still. It's not fun, to me. If favor rolled over, it wouldn't be such a big deal. Why would the Giants just discard favor because it didn't fit into a specific limit? Wouldn't the Giants take all supplication into account anyway? Don't the Giants love their loyal Glitchen? ;)
