How are YOU avoiding the MMPORG same old same old...?

Okay, so it's going on two months into Glitch here, and I can't help but noticing that, while there's a lot new and cool about the game, the same "Get as much stuff as possible!  How can I Level Up and be more powerful than anyone else?" mindset still seems to apply for many here.

Fortunately, I've also noted many exceptions (some quite creative) to the rule.  My question to the forumfolk:  What is your guiding motivation for the game?  What, if anything, are you doing that changes the acquisitional / speed based mindset above?

Curious to see your answers...

  • The thing about this game is that the only thing you need to do is keep your energy/mood up. Other than that, you can do whatever you want. You can just walk around the entire time you play the game, exploring every new street .You can choose to seek out players and gift them something, or splank each one. You can make it your duty to rename every animal to your username.
The options are endless. This isn't your classic MMO due to the lack of urgency or need to protect oneself. No players around to try and murder you. No princesses dying because you took too long to save her.

  • "The thing about this game is that the only thing you need to do is keep your energy/mood up"

And I don't even need/want to do that. Hell is fun! Death for all! >D

  • I started playing as everyone else, collecting stuff, buy a house... Now that I've got that I was looking for different things to do. Then I found an RP group and it's actually fun on this game.

  • One of the ways that I 'cope' is that I have not ever, not a single time, accessed the leader boards.  Not interested.  I don't care how much of this or that or what 'accomplishments' I or others have attained.  There's no scorecard in my playing style.

I generally am uninterested in the 'classic MMO' culture, and if it was predominant here I wouldn't be here.  I know I am not alone in this.

I die almost every day at least once, because I do a huge amount of 'energy banking' with no-no powder*.  We're sort of immortal in this game;  death is temporary and can only be
    self-inflicted.

There is considerable competition for resources, and there is a 'flipside reaction' of everything-belongs-to-everybody we-all-need-to-work-as-a-team dogma to deal with as well.  I choose to just avoid areas where there is congestion and competition and go to other areas of the world.  If someone 'competes' with me I walk away, because there's tons of other stuff out there.

(*meaning- the 'free energy' you get when using no-no can be 'stored' in things like aged cheese that you can use later)

  • I'm an RP-type in WoW, so I use Glitch as a sort of anti-WoW cool down.  I've moved house a lot, and I have a slight (but manageable) mining addiction.  Today, I baked apple cake so I'm all about cooking on Glitch as well.

Other than my obsessive hoarding (which makes moving house a complete nightmare, but a necessity since I sell everything that's not essential and start again in the new place) I don't do much other than wander around and talking to random people.  I dig, I mine, I scrape, I squeeze, nibble and milk.  I water, pet and harvest.  I'm like a one-Glitch machine.

I love exploring in Glitch; there's something a little too satisfying about the exploration badges for me.

I have to admit, though, the very -last- thing on my mind is leveling and it usually comes as a complete surprise.

For me, the biggest thing that breaks Glitch away from the 'classic MMO' culture is the ridiculously lovely, helpful, high-quality, hilarious community.  I've played a number of MMOs and I've never once found a community so inclusive.

The apple cake smells divine, by the way.

  • I love routine in a game. I'm quite boring really, but so long as I can harvest, do tower quests and harvest some more... life is good :)  The new stuff's all well and good, but really it's just a distraction from what I really enjoy, just wondering around UR harvesting and chatting to friends.

I know there's a big thing about "Don't do the same thing all the time!" and lets nerf everything repetative to encourage people to branch out and do different stuff as doing the same thing is boring.
But I happen to like boring. I like my routines.  Real life has enough stuff going on to keep me on my toes, I like the comfortable feeling I get from my Glitchy life.
Sometimes predictability and routine are enough. Sometimes same old, same old is what a person wants from a game.
Leveling up and 'winning' doesn't interest me that much, sure when you hit a new level it's a nice feeling, but that's not something I'm aiming for. If it was, I'd be a lot higher than I am now. All I want from Glitch is to keep on enjoying the game I've come to love. So far = So good.

  • I am not avoiding the same old same old. I am really quite bored with Glitch already, because of how repetitive and limited the game design is in regards to my own playing style. When I feel like being creative I prefer to write or draw or design games of my own rather than walk, run, jump, explore, make my own user quests, or anything else in Glitch that I personally feel is completely pointless and unproductive.

I do, on the other hand, have hopes that the game will become great in time, so I still log in once a day to make sure my piggies are fed and do a little bit of gathering. Also, keep my skills queued up. Then peruse the forums a little to get a feel for how the community is doing and to scout out any new content that may be arriving soon.

  • The community. I love it because I end up getting on and just chatting with people rather than actually doing anything.

Hopefully they'll start up the street projects again soon, I love those...!

  • In most games, I'm an achiever sort. I live by leaderboards and collecting all the right gear. If I've fallen too far behind in the game, I still compete with myself. I couldn't tell you how many spreadsheets I have for tracking my progress and optimizing my game play in various games. During Beta, I had a touch of that with Glitch. I was a bit behind the others, starting in late May (I think), but that didn't stop me. I was obsessed with the leaderboards and, especially, with XP. I lived in Ajaya mining away for donation fodder. I can still divide most any number by gems & sparkly (1500 = 25 amber OR 2 diamonds + 1 moonstone).

When the game launched, something inside me clicked. It wasn't a conscious thought and I'm not sure when or why it happened, but I started exploring and bouncing down the streets putting flowers on gravestones and shoving snowcones in pockets. I discovered the joy of spreading the paper water cups from the Bureaucratic Hall and egging people's houses. I found little secret nooks to hide stuff in. I become obsessed with my home (which has led me a bit back to the shrine addiction for the icons). And I started a business -- Vera Strange Blooms (and deliveries!) -- which lets me get paid for bouncing down the street like a loon shoving flowers and other goodies in people's hands. Over the last month or so, I've made some really fun in-game friends... the chatting, the parties, (and now) the games of crowns!

I don't know exactly what has happened to me as a game player, but this new "hearty" me is really loving this game. Thank you, Tiny Speck and all you freaky Glitchen out there, for showing me that there really is more than one way to have fun with a game and bringing out this wacky side in me.

  • What a great question Gipsy Davey! And the answers are wonderful! They also help answer the question about how to 'win' at Glitch.  They capture the sense of what is different about this game.

I do many of the things others describe above. And further, for those who feel it is 'boring' or 'repetitive', I use Glitch as an escape and relaxation. I do NOT want competitive pressures, I do not want to worry about what level I am at, dying or losing energy or beating someone on a quest. I can always fight Rooks or mine if I want more stress. And there are tons of ways to make it interesting. The Sandbox group that was mentioned above is an excellent example of imaginative play (Sometime I hope to have time to join them) and, there are many others.

I can only play when my schedule allows, so what I do has to not be tied to some kind of time frame.  If I have the time, I can do something more complex or competitive. If I don't--I don't have to, and I can still enjoy the game. I can play solitary or interact with a group. I can cook, I can travel, etc., etc. I can play for half an hour or half the night. I am at level 22 and there are still all kinds of things I have yet to explore.

    aaaannnnd, especially:
+eleventy-billion: "the ridiculously lovely, helpful, high-quality, hilarious community."
I love the atmosphere the devs have created for the game, and all the players who actively contribute to that atmosphere.

  • During beta I lived in a central location in Groddle Forest, and enjoyed meandering around Ur watering and petting trees and piggies.

After the game opened and we were reset I chose a house in Bortola. Which led to my self-imposed task in the game: ensure that Bortola has lots of butterflies. As I harvest the ingredients for butterfly eggs myself, (although donations are gratefully accepted) this means I spend a lot of time wandering around Bortola and Alakol.

It's a quite peaceful pursuit, but easily measured: "Mallos Means has only two butterflies! Time to fix that!" Etc.

I'm not a rich Glitch, but a happy one :)

  • OH I don't know... I suppose if I ever reach Level 60 and have the PERFECT home, I'll wonder about this... but as it is I move a lot, and I'm working on collecting Icons, and am kind of in competition with one of my friends to reach level 60 the fastest, so... *shrugs*  I love the levelling up aspect of MMORPGs, even if at the end of the day I'm still practically a n00b.  ^_^*

Then again, I'm easily amused... >_>
