How to Follow 101

I am inept at following.  I request Follow but never know if it is accepted.  If it is accepted, I get dropped pretty quickly.  I am dropped if I am first in line or last or someplace in the middle.  Tonight I discovered that Follow did not work because I was too far from the Leader even though the only way I could get closer was to stand in front of her and then I couldn't see enough of her to click and request Follow.  So, What I need is a primer on how to Follow, how to know if I am Following (before the line moves off), how to stay in the line, etc.  This is a good place to place your Tips or problems or tell how you Followed and how long it lasted, etc.  If you got the Glitch Train Badge, how did you get it, how many were in the train, etc.?

Is there a Time limit on when the line must start after Followers have been accepted?
Is there a limit on how many can follow, how long you can Follow?
What was the longest Train and how many streets did it cover or was it a Conga in one location?

Please help me learn!

  • Don't move after you have sent the request - any movement will take you straight off the line again. If your request has been accepted it will say in local chat. If people are following you and you want to know if they're all on, it's a good idea to do a little walking to check before changing streets.

  • Thanks Pomponella, good tip!  I often get dropped before the line moves, now I know why!

  • using the keyboard to press return over the character gives you a selection box of all items in range. Therefore allowing you to choose correctly what to interact with. Then its up to the person being followed to click and accept the follow. Then the best option is to not touch anything until you want to break the follow.
Best of luck. I've got the 3 followers teleport quest to complete at some point.

  • Click the person's name in chat, choose 'Follow.'
    Don't move.
You can check by clicking the person's name to see if it idicates you are following.

  • Never touch the directional keys once you are following.  Click over to the chat window and chat away, but don't move!

  • The "Don't Move" advice is what i have missed.  I always move.  Can't wait to try this next time.  I also need to recruit some followers for the Quest.

  • I find it easier to use the keyboard than the mouse to select the person to follow, or use the mouse on their name in chat.  Because it helps people locate them in the street or click on them in chat, it's a good idea for the leader to say a few things in local chat.
Don't move or jump after a follow request until you want to stop following. You can do some stuff in place like meditating and crafting; I wouldn't try to click on any animal or rock or anything in the street, since you might move to perform the action, outside of something like a mining train, where I think they get everybody together on top of the rock first?

If you request to follow someone who is in turn following a third person, it seems to get translated into a request to follow that third person; I haven't tried this with a big train, but it may help when trying to join one.
