Food Variety Bonus (New Upgrade)

There's a new upgrade ('Appreciation of Food Variety') which gives bonus imagination for eating a variety of crafted food. (The upgrade is intended for low level players, so most of you will get it in the next re-deal or two.)

Only higher-level crafted food counts (not plain ol' meat or eggs or beans, etc.) — a complete list of the items is in a comment below. The bonus is the equivalent of 25% of the food's energy value if it has been a full game day (four hours) since you last ate that type of food and 50% if it has been at least 30 game days (a bit less than a week).

You'll know that food will give you a bonus because the normal "Eat" verb will be replaced with "Eat • Bonus iMG" (or "Eat • SuperBonus iMG" for the 30 day version). You can eat as much as you can fit in your belly and get bonus iMG for the food value of all of it (so, it's better to run your tank down and eat a fat stack of things that will give you a bonus).

The intention behind this change is to give chefs a bit of a boost — all of us who do not currently cook will be more likely to buy your wares (and a variety of them, to boot).

All of these rules are subject to extensive tweaking over the next few weeks (example: we might cap the amount you can get from a single type of food in a day; we might introduce more bonus tiers, we might tie to do calendar game days/resets rather full four hour periods, etc.).

And that's about it: start complaining … now!

  • Love this! (and haven't logged in to play around yet... but could the eligible foods be somehow made salient in the recipes menu IG so one doesn't have to refer to this list in the forums?)

  • My only complaint is that my RL stomach rumbles every time I cook Cedar Plank Salmon. Does Tiny Speck deliver?

Seriously, I used to meditate for all my energy needs, but this will have me cooking and buying food again for sure. :]

  • Ah nice, I do try to make a few different foods whenever I cook just for the sake of it. I see all sorts of people giving up on eating, but I never really saw it as an unpleasant experience.

  • "Plans for the sauces" sounds like a winner. And what about that damn whortleberry jam?

  • Wait, wait - I just now noticed the "Plans for the sauces"

You mean there'll be a reason I've been hoarding a cabinet full of sauces ever since I made a crapload of stuff to get the last "make X number of foods" badge? Oh, this is happy making. I love the sauces.

...I think "start complaining now" may have warded off any possible complaints. Nice move, stoot.

  • This is so awesome. I've been waiting for something like this. I like to spice it up and now I have a reason to make eat/buy more than just awesome stews :)

I love how things are shaping up in this game!

  • I am confused by   " You can eat as much as you can fit in your belly and get bonus iMG for the food value of all of it (so, it's better to run your tank down and eat a fat stack of things that will give you a bonus)."  and "  (example: we might cap the amount you can get from a single type of food in a day;"   isn't there already a cap since you can only eat 1 stack which gets the bonus?  and what if you can fit more than a stack in your belly?  my energy tank is only 3440 but to get the maximum benefit I am limited to the foods that provide more energy than, say, fried eggs (11 energy/440 per stack)

  • *scoffs* You guys are amateurs. If you want to get something complained about, ya got to do it yourself:

"Pfft. Why aren't drinks included in this super-bonus-y thingie here? What, drunks aren't good enough for bonuses now? Also, I want free pudding with my free lunch."

  • AntieSkeptic, here's how I understand it. It's very similar to "Make a Crab Happy"

Say you haven't eaten fried eggs in long enough to get the "Super iMG bonus" If you eat one fried egg, you've now reset your "fried egg" timer, and only got the iMG you'd get from eating one egg.

if you ate a whole stack of them, you'd get the iMG from all 40, and thus a bigger bonus. Then the timer on "how long since you ate fried eggs" would reset.

Obviously, 440 energy isn't going to fill up most glitch's tank, so then you'd eat a stack of whatever else will give you the "super iMG bonus" But basically, this stops people from only ever eating Awesome Stews, which I will admit I am guilty of.

Now, if you burn through a lot of energy you may find yourself needing food before there's any food that was eaten long enough ago to give the bonus, but someone will have to do the research on that. It may be me, because I love cooking and I love tracking things.

  • Okay, so I threw together a spreadsheet over lunch (It's 100 degrees, what was I going to do, go outside? I think not.)

From what I can see, unless you play Glitch very seldomly, the 50% bonus for eating a food only once ever 30 Glitch days is useless. If I eat Awesome Stew during one game day, and then later during another game day, I get the same 1200 iMG I'd get for only eating it once a (real) week. And then tomorrow if I played over two game days I could get another 1200, etc. So in that week I could earn 8400 img just from eating a full stack of Awesome Stews over two game days per RL day, vs the 1200 for only eating it every 30 Glitch days.

(Well, not useless for foods you eat seldomly. I could see making an effort to eat the smaller-energy foods on a given day of the week to maximize the iMG. You might have to eat five or six of them to fill your tank, but you'll get the full 50% iMG bonus without having to deal with fiddly small bits of energy on a daily basis. Obviously, as I think this through more, different ways of capitalizing on this are occuring to me.)

And that leaves a bunch of other food as options, too, for those who play more (or burn through energy like candy, like I seem to.)

Very interesting. I love cooking, and will definitely be cooking more (and a bigger variety) of foods to have available to me.

  • (now, it does say "A full four hours" rather than "per game day", so if you tend to play in a chunk on either side of a New Day, this will be less helpful, but if you tend to play, say, in the morning and in the evenings, you can rack up quite a bit of iMG if you pay attention to what you're eating, and play hard enough to need to eat.)

  • @ Aliera, I understand how the bonus works which is why I am questioning the "might cap" and "as much as you can fit in your belly" in Stoot's explanation

  • Oh, Auntie, I'm just thinking out loud. This is the first thing in Glitch that's really caught my eye because I love cooking and it seemed to always be a wasted skill. I'm THRILLED with these changes. I think the "fit in your belly" thing was saying to make sure you can use all the energy from a full stack of whatever before you try to eat it, since the game won't let you eat more than your tank can hold. So if you eat a full stack of Awesome Stews when you can only hold, say 1500 more energy, you won't eat the full stack, just 1400 worth, and you'll only get 700 (or 350) iMG instead of the 1200 (or 600) you're expecting.

  • I got my upgrade card yesterday and am thrilled with the change. Anyone short of a variety of food can pop to my tower where there is a selection of 'different' dishes to be found.

P.S. Can't wait for the sauce announcement, I do love a bit o sauce :)

  • I approve of this delicious upgrade!

But, to the level 60's, the local chat laments: "You'll receive no more iMG from making these today. The creation process has ceased to stimulate your frontal cortex.". Are we doomed to not gaining the imagination from food (and donations)?
