RFC: Glitch Resources

EDIT:  Moved to (semi)permenant host.  Now available 24/7.    Still looking for feedback.

Got bored and decided to mess with the Glitch API.   Taught myself enough Python and MySQL to suck down the info and stick it in a database.  Then taught myself enough PHP to stick it into a webpage.

I know there are other similar sites, but I thought I would request some feedback to see if it would be useful to people, and or what changes might make it useful.

  • NOW THIS IS PODRACING!

Have you considered working / talking with the Wiki to have them host it 24/7, and possibly get a a gift or bonus for your work (of putting the thing together, not making the game of course).

  • Very nice.

    Suggestions:

put a note on the page that residential blocks are not included.  (there are often complaints that there are no wood trees "in the wild", or only 2, or whatever, based on the info from the zoggish app, although there are lots on residential blocks which are accessible to all.)  Alternately, add residential block information, if the API allows it and if the community doesn't think it'd be disruptive.

Add mailboxes (even though those are not dynamic, they're something people often ask for help finding.)

  • Great suggestions Fnibbit!

The private streets nor mailboxes are included in the API, but since the mailboxes are static I can include those.
Also adding street projects to the list (that IS included in the API)

  • You don't need PHP to make it into a webpage. Python works far better and it's something you already know (look into WSGI). As for database, I would strongly recommend PostgreSQL instead of MySQL.

  • Patches SHOULD be included in the API, since when you load a street with a patch it says "X patches" but this is amazing anyhow. The only thing it's missing is Residential areas, as I know that's where a lot of Bubble trees and Wood trees hide.

  • Awesome, Linnaea! The use of pics is makes it very user friendly. Thank you for putting this together.

  • Removing "active street project" from resources since there is a timing issue with the API.

    For example:

There is an active project in PokiPok Press right now, but that street name doesn't come across in the API.  If you look at locations in the encyclopedia, the Callopee area is listed, but the street with the actual project isn't there.

Will add this back if I can figure out a work-around.

  • If you are still having problems with time zone stuff in PHP or Javascript, feel free to give me a holler. I think my email is available in my profile. I've never messed with Python (yet) so I won't be of any help on that one at the moment.

  • oOoOooo.. Millie just helped me confirm that patches do show up in the API.   If I have time, I'll add those to the database tomorrow.

WANTED:  Good screenshot of Butter and Batter when they switch directions and you get a top/full view instead of a side view.   Will pay for a link to a screenshot of either in gratitude or currents!

  • API is nice and all, and I see a lot of websites using it, but one thing I'd be very interested in seeing is someone who knows their way around Mediawiki to make a plugin usable to work with the API much better.

I've noticed the mediawiki isn't exactly sporting a lot of plugins right now and is missing some key ones such as Semantic Mediawiki which is pretty much the first thing you want on any wiki.

With that said as far as items for your page goes, I would like to see a few more scripts for the auction house, going to a lot of different websites when I could go to just one is a bit of a pain, I like that yours uses graphics, but if someone would be kind enough to give you a better layout that'd be nice (Photoshop plugs in nicely to PHP if you're using tables, if you're using div as is usually suggested it's a bit tougher but nothing a beginning web designer can't figure out).

Liking your website though and the url is easy to remember.

  • I'm offering help in sprucing up the looks of the site. Here's a static mockup of what I think would be a better looking version of the site with cleaned up HTML and some sparkling CSS.

    Comments:
While I cannot comment on the state of the code on the server-side, the client-side HTML is pretty poor - tables for formatting and <center> for centering elements have been banished from the web for the better part of the decade now, and rightfully so too. Using tables for the actual data is probably semantic, but it would be a pain to style so I've replaced it with a list instead.

The site would probably also do better with navigation on every page, which you can see in the mockup, though I've only created menu for Trees and Animals. Using a sprite map for the homepage will also speed things up considerably, by reducing the number of HTTP requests dramatically.
