Herbs on produce vendors, please

Produce has always been available on vendors so that people with bog houses are not at an unfair disadvantage for cooking.  Now that there are skills requiring herbs we really need herbs on the vendors as well to even the playing field across housing types.  It's really not fair that bog house players have easy access to both herbs and produce, while players with crop houses have to deal with all the nastiness in the community herb gardens or pay inflated auction prices for herbs.  Hopefully once we can customize houses we'll have a crop/herb choice and at that point the vendor herbs could be removed.

  • YES! Herbs right now are at 10x their worth in the auction house, and that's really prohibitive. I was very much looking forward to tincturing, but apparently I either have to spend a bunch of time grinding for currants to purchase herbs, or buy a new house in the swamps.

I'd love to be able to either buy from vendors or harvest them in the wild.

  • Two big thumbs up. I was really looking forward to tincturing but it looks like this skill will have to go on the back burner until this gets sorted out.

  • I like that an effort has been made to make herb gardens more useful and valuable.

I'm less keen on some of the negative events that have occurred since:
    * Auctions for herbs are greatly overpriced (entirely within the rules)
    * People are creating alts to buy herb plot homes (somewhat within the rules, that may change if it is determined to be an unfair advantage even if the alt and main do not play simultaneously)
    * People extorting other players at community herb gardens by demanding currants so they won't grief them by taking herbs other players have planted and fertilized and waited for (there does not seem to be a specific rule about not extorting others, but it certainly does not seem to be within the spirit of TS or Glitch)
    * People simply playing the "click faster" game to take herbs other players have planted, fertilized, and waited for (within the rules, but not very community-minded or cooperative)
    * Wealthier players buying timeshares in other player's herb plot homes (seems to be within the rules); expect squabbling about who took what when to follow

Herbs being available at produce or alchemical vendors would help with some of this, for sure.

I don't think it would be fair to reduce herb plot home owners back to second-class citizens, mind you, but a similar system (as has been in existence for garden plot home owners, where the homeless and lower-level players can still buy ingredients for drinks and food and egg seasoning, etc.) seems like a good idea.

Herb seeds should also be available from gardening vendors. I never understood why the poor herb people had to trek to the Ancestral Lands to HOPE for a seed or rely on auctions or the kindness of total strangers to get their seeds to plant.

Herb plot owners should still have a slight advantage when it comes to how much it costs to buy or sell herbs since they put time and currants into it, but some of the nastiness that has occurred because of the new skills and potions / tinctures was entirely avoidable.

The suggestion in other threads that herb plot owners be able to buy a small cluster of three or four flower pots (with a grow light?) for garden produce and garden plot owners be able to buy a small cluster of three or four herb pots (lidded?) for herbal produce might be worthwhile, too, and could also be available at gardening vendors. Make them pricey, but consider it. Perhaps a limit on the number of special pots per home could be set.

  • I give a huge thumbs up to the ideas listed above. Thank you for the great way that you put it, Lorelei!!

  • I think the idea behind the latest herb-related skills was to make bog dwelling a more desirable option.  It used to be that living in the bogs was spurned by many, and even if there was plenty of bog housing available people would say that there were "no houses anywhere."    What's happened now is that you have to consider a choice - should you sell that treehouse and move to the bogs for awhile?    Many come to the forums and say "I don't WANT to have to make a choice, I want it ALL."    I personally think that having the game encourage you to make choices is a good thing both for the game play and for the game community.

Then perhaps crop plot owners should have the same advantage.

Herb pots for croppers? And crop pots for herbers? And a limited number of either? Perfect! Love love love this idea! +google-billion.

Additional benefit: the ability to run around saying "crop plot pot"! What's not to love? :D

  • I like this idea, but taking produce vendors away would be better. It would make gardening more profitable and increase the value of a 50k home. Another idea is when house customization comes you can add a herb garden.

  • I'm really, really hoping that the upcoming housing customization will allow players access to both types of plots.  It has never been fun to be forced into choosing between herbs and crops, and the updates have made it even less fun.  My hope is that putting herbs on vendors would be a temporary measure, mostly to reduce all the bad behavior that Lorelei listed so well.

  • Not that I'm opposed to the idea of produce being removed from vendors, but why should 50k home value be increased? It's already the highest earning property by a significant margin.

It comes with a 28 plot garden while the largest swamp homes come with a 12 plot garden. So, for example, if you plant zucchini in a 50k home, you will gain a profit of 2800c in 8 hours. If you plant Silvertongue in the largest swamp house, you will have a profit of ~1370c  in 7 hours or ~1765c in 9 hours if you plant Yellow Crumb. Meaning that a 50k home will earn 1035-1430c more than the largest swamp home, every 8 hours. More info on the other crops here

Grow your veggies. Sell them to the tool vendor (or on auction). Buy more herbs than you could have planted in a swamp house... and still have currants to spare.

    * figures based on game price, which we will likely get back down to as the excitement of the new skills wanes over the next week or so and prices stabilize. Even if herb prices don't return to below game price, they will drop to the point where crop prices are competitive.

  • I agree that some balancing is in order. I like the idea of taking away the produce vendors. WalruZ's point makes sense to me:  I personally think that having the game encourage you to make choices is a good thing both for the game play and for the game community.

  • Choices are good but only if they are balanced.  The herb plot homes are much smaller and have fewer features than the crop houses (even the 15K) so it's not a simple, balanced choice between crop and herb gardens. I feel really sorry for the treehouse players who are trying to buy herbs without the income of a big house right now.

  • I believe their goals include eventually eliminating almost all vendors, so I don't think this is in line with the future of the game.

If anything, it's a lot more likely that the Produce vendors will cease to exist before there are herbs added in.  I could see them adding in herbs temporarily until the market settled, but I also see that as a waste of development time better spent on the changes they took the game back to beta for.

The market will settle eventually.  This is really not going to be a big deal in the future.
