Issues Surrounding Butterflies

Butterflies have been frustrating this morning. I love that we can keep them confined (sorry! D:). But it's still difficult to collect from a massive number. This is due to two issues. The first is that the butterflies can be really high up. Please no. Sometimes I find myself jumping and it's just silly. So either let us reach higher up or bring the butterflies closer to the ground when they're confined like that, so I can massage all of them. Secondly, you get stuck on menus you can't use. Sometimes, that butterfly's spent. Most of the time though, it's that stupid post. It's not even my post. I can't do anything with it. But it still hangs me up. I thought, "Why not just get rid of menus that lead nowhere?" But then I realized that some people would be all, "Wah! There's no menu! Is it not clicking? What is this?" when in fact, there was just no option left. Probably bad. So I've been trying to figure out ways around this. You could treat enter differently, since it only seems annoying when I'm spamming it for animals and stuff, and only have empty menus for clicking. You could make it so pressing enter on an empty menu made it close so you could keep scrolling through. You could push empty menus to the back of the queue (which wouldn't do much if the butterflies were still out of reach, but imagine them in reach, all of them, and they'd circle around in an order that isn't so random). Maybe there are more options. I just know it bugs me.

On a semi related note, I have been told that some of the options for enter are frustrating. Like how you're trying to pet pigs and you feed them your own food. Or how I'll be on someone else's street and almost rename a butterfly (D: I haven't. I catch it.). These are not things I want when I'm spamming enter. Some have said they wish that the enter menus were a bit more restricted. It would be nice, but I don't see it being very likely because there are some people who rely very, very heavily on the keyboard and maybe they feed their pigs by hand, who knows. Although I would like it, regardless. All I know is, I'm a cheevie hunter, and the livestock have been more difficult than they need to be.

  • Are you talking about milking them in the wild? Because there are milk collectors for the domesticated ones.

I know I collected so much milk from only keeping a few around that it took packs and packs of No-No to convert it all to butter and then cheese. Your issue with butterflies is fascinating to me if only because I can't possibly imagine what you're doing with all that milk :)

I agree that the point and click on the flying butterfly can be annoying but it's also kind of endearing to me now.

  • Well, it's not for the milk, this time. There's a cheevie, to massage 503 butterflies. So I'm doing that, at people's houses. I know there are milk collectors, but you're saying you don't interact with any of your animals at all? You don't sing to butterflies so they live longer? I mean, I don't have a milk collector or butterflies for that matter because I'm going more the industrial and alchemy route to start. Animals aren't really a thing. But when I do interact with animals, it seems more difficult than it needs to be. All these people put animals in their front yard so people will interact with them and give them iMG. Then interacting with them is a pain. It's only easy for the owner, who bypasses the whole process with machines. Doesn't that seem odd to you?

  • Getting rid of accidentally hitting the Animal sticks that arent yours...+1 yes
Making butterflies fly lower or slower etc. - 1
Changing the function of the enter key, i just don't see why -1
Personally i don't think butterflys should be easy to catch, or fly lower for that matter, simply due to the fact that they are butterflies.

  • I use levitate to make a game out of harvesting from butterflies in midair and would be sad to see this not be challenging anymore.

  • I can't levitate. =/ It's kinda been getting to me. I finished the egg quest a few days ago. When I first started it, I asked people if they happened to see/have one. I got many replies to the effect of "grow a tree". Which is great, except I couldn't make a bean. I like using the AH as little as possible. I like pulling my own weight. So I felt this quest would take an eternity as that skill was very, very low on my list of priorities and I hadn't gotten my unlearn upgrade yet. This seems to happen a lot. People will tell me this is easily solved, if you happen to have this, which is always some outlandish skill. Please remember that a lot of people are just starting and are nowhere near maxed out on skills. That is why the way that you all deal with butterflies will not work for me, as I cannot levitate or use milkers. And honestly, I don't think I should have to for such a simple action.

If you want to do it yourself, you need to take the time to learn to be able to do it yourself... you can't have everything at once for no effort

  • @Aeden: Quest are meant to be hard. You don't have to complete them straight away. It took me months to find a last egg standing, out in the wild. I've no idea if I had the skill to season tree beans at that stage, it would have been irrelevant because that was in the day when we weren't given free houses, but had to earn currents and buy them

And all of us who now have the skills to use milkers (or levitate, though I've never done that myself to milk butterflies) all went through a stage where we couldn't either

Aeden wrote: Please remember that a lot of people are just starting and are nowhere near maxed out on skills.

And you don't need to be maxed to enjoy Glitch. Getting there is much of the fun. If there is an activity you don't enjoy, don't do it, or learn a skill that makes it better. If you want milk get to an AK level where massaging butterflies is unnecessary and you can use milkers. So you don't get the badge for massaging butterflies. Does it matter? Or wait until you can levitate if you really think that will help and get the badge a few weeks, or even months later.

To have fun here you don't need to achieve  everything instantly

  • The idea is not to achieve everything instantly, for no effort. If that's what I wanted, I would've used the AH much, much more than I do. It's just that milking a butterfly is very simple. It should be very easy. However I spend much more time jumping and closing menus than I do actually interacting with the butterflies. I'm definitely willing to wait for my skills. If it was a more complicated action, something meant for people much farther than me, I would accept it. Take towers. They're supposed to be a time and money sink, a goal to keep people playing and I'm very excited for the day I start on mine. However this is milking butterflies. People seem to bypass the kinks in the system instead of wanting to see them fixed. This isn't about instant gratification or milk. It's about why something you can do the instant you get out of the tutorial and get some lotion has the player spending more time in useless menus than they are actually interacting. That is all.

As for you, Rhonda, I understand that others have been playing longer and thus have more skills. I'm not hung up on that. It's exciting. What bugs me is that the solutions that most put forward are skills, not solutions. Glitch is in a strange predicament. Unlike typical MMOs, Glitch has no crucial decisions to make (like if I become a Cardinal, I will never be able to cloak! D:). Meaning there's no wrong answers, meaning there's no reason for alts. This stretches the gap and makes it a different game once you have all of your machines functional, your tower, your iMG farm. It's not a problem, because once you're there, you worked for every one of those things, you deserve that payoff, 100%. But it also means that if I have none of these things, those solutions aren't really viable for a long time. Past the point of necessity. I'm considering not even putting butterflies out front as I see in so many yards. Because from what I've heard from friends, they might poke some things to win you iMG, but the butterflies are too much trouble to touch by hand. So where's the point in that? You can have your own butterflies. You don't ever have to touch anyone else's. But in my mind, I'd rather fix the problem than settle for the result. If the developers and the rest of the community is content with how it is, then that's fine. Eventually I'll win my badge. I'm stubborn enough. And I'll get a bunch of butterflies that I never touch.

  • You were also talking about making beans though, which is what I referred to and was talking about

Are you using your mouse or your keyboard?  It's easier to do play with butterflies with your keyboard.

I agree that they're not the easiest thing to interact with when they're all bunched together -  but there are plenty of free flying butterflies out there, look for those.

I like bunching mine together in my back garden because I only have them there to be milked by the remote milkers... but on my street I have them flying about, which makes them a lot easier to interact with.

  • Although I fail to see how jumping up to butterflies seems silly (it's what they do you know, fly, high...) I think if you stop focusing on homestreets to get that badge, but get into the world you'll find it a bit easier. Plenty of places where you yourself can stand somewhere high and the butterflies are much easier to get.
Posted 4 months ago by WeavingTheWeb Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It's easier, if you want to interact with multiple ones, to go to someone's street. Especially if they have the upgrade card that bunches them together. I've tried pressing enter. On pigs and chickens, it works really well. Because they're always in range, the order never changes. I can move my mouse slowly, and make sure I visit every one in full. It works really well that way. But because butterflies fly out of range, the order (Um, I hope you know what I mean by order. When you first press enter over a bunch of things, you can see all the stuff you can interact with. That list has an order. If you never lose sight of something, the order never changes.) changes. Thus I can't just hit enter, keep moving the mouse to hover over the next butterfly, and hit enter again to massage or milk or what have you. It'll hit the post or a butterfly will fly up and the one I thought was next is now the same one I've been trying over and over. You're right that in the field, you can click on them easier, but I like to do runs. This makes home streets very appealing, but because of some of the differences between butterflies and other livestock, it doesn't work as well as it should. I can see how levitation, depending on how it works, could possibly put you in the middle of the butterflies, but it's not on my priority list. I've been considering trying to find something solid to stand on, but it seems furniture doesn't like being outside... If you know of a better way to massage butterflies, I'd love to hear it. But as it stands, they seem strangely more pesky than the pigs and chickens, less fun to play with than the foxes, and less useful than the three put together. They're real pretty though.

  • Personally I don't find much fun in standing there and just having to click, click, click to pet/nibble and such. I never interact with animals that are set up like that on homestreets (come to think of it, I try to avoid homestreets as much as I can with all the drama surrounding them) as I feel it's boring and it looks awful too...
You say "it's easier" and then you sum up all the reasons why it isn't easy. So you're really saying  it's not easier? ;)

I don't have a better way for you to massage butterflies than what I suggested, other than wait a bit until you have higher skills/upgrades which makes it easier.

As IrenicRhonda said: To have fun here you don't need to achieve  everything instantly...

  • just massage them as you wander round Ur.  you'll get the badge eventually.    not all the badges are ones you can grind through easily with methods like you have for pigs & chickens

or  you can, but they are a major pain in the arse

so,  it depends how much you enjoy pain in your arse versus wandering about, massaging butterflies as you please, with little or no rectal irritation at all.

  • Erm yes, that's what I was trying to say, lol
Posted 4 months ago by WeavingTheWeb Subscriber! | Permalink
  • "You say "it's easier" and then you sum up all the reasons why it isn't easy. So you're really saying  it's not easier? ;)"

As far as I know, the method I described is the easiest way I know of massaging butterflies. However, that way is still much more cumbersome than it is for other animals. That is how it is both easier and not easy.

Again, I have no interest in getting everything instantly. There is no sense of pride or fun in that. However this game is by no means quest oriented. And I like having goals. So I try to get achievements. I don't mind going out and doing the achievements all in one go. It's just that the butterflies seemed unnecessarily unwieldy. I'm not going to stop trying to get achievements because of this. In fact, them heeding my advice and changing it would probably come far too late for my achievement. However I think it would benefit the game, so I'd still like to see it changed.

  • Well, I wholeheartedly hope they don't simplify Glitch more than they already did... so let's agree to disagree :)
Posted 4 months ago by WeavingTheWeb Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Butterflies are supposed to flutter in irregular patterns and not necessarily close to the ground. If they didn't they wouldn't act or look the way butterflies are supposed to. Also its more cumbersome for actions to butterflies, simply because they aren't on the ground and the chickens and pigs are, its not really comparable. I really would not like nor see the point of changing butterflies patterns/ behaviors, some thing should be a challenge. That being said, there are a lot of achievements(badges) that you can't complete in one run, in fact its practically impossible, for quite a few achievements.  Relax and, let things come as they will, otherwise there is going to be a long list of things that irritate you, as you get to the longer achievements that you cant complete in under a week or more. Just relax and enjoy the game!

  • The way they are cramped around a pole isn't normal for butterflies either. In fact, they rarely get very high off the ground simply because they have no need of it. They can, they can reach the top of skyscrapers and trees but your common butterfly on a normal day has no need for that and only stays a couple feet off the ground. Foxes should be the challenge, the game sets them up as one, and yet because fox brushing is almost perfect (the brush does take a second to reset, but this could also be entirely purposeful, which is fine), I have no issues brushing the foxes. I find it strange that they're set up to be much harder and yet the butterflies waste more time.

I know not all badges can be gotten at once. I've looked at them. Let me explain to you one last time. While I may chase after goals, I am, by no means, a person who wants something easily. I will not throw a tantrum when I don't "win" in a week. The only reason I signed up for Glitch was its adorable writing. I don't play casual games. It is because of this that I set goals for myself when the quests run out. I see nothing wrong with that. In the other games I play, I've devoted years to getting to cap. I've gone about a lot of things the long and hard way. I'm determined and stubborn, but I like fixing things and improving them. I accepted in the beginning that you do not agree that the curve for butterflies is out of place. So be it. But I don't need to relax. This is just a different play style. It's goal oriented. Just because it's different from yours doesn't mean it should change. Moreover, it's not the sort where irritation is constant. I could go out and harvest 5003 cherries in a day and the entire time I won't be thinking how long it would take, but instead that I'm getting closer. When it dings, I'll be happy, because it paid off. The butterflies complicate things, but they're not going to ruin things. If you think, because I'm determined, that I'm miserable the whole time, you just don't understand the style. If I was sitting around, I'd feel like I wasn't doing anything. A week ago I made a bunch of cabinets. Although there was no achievement, the fact that I had a plan made it rewarding. Poking things at random and lounging around isn't my idea of fun. And I find it disconcerting that something like that is something that people want corrected.

  • Whether its the case or not it comes across as being impatient,  and that you just want things to be easy, true or not this is the argument that we think were seeing....

  • I just don't get what your point is, how they complicate things if you don't mind things being complicated
