What I can do in other ppls yards.

There has been a lot of chit chat about what ppl can and cant do in others yards. I've tested a lot of streets so far I can:

Harvest your meat and CAN pick up your meat collector
Harvest your milk and CAN pick up your milk collector
I cannot collect Hooch but I CAN take distiller if I ahve a key and I CAN distill for you
I can harvest all ore
I can harvest, pet, poisen and water all trees
I CAN nourish, water or HARVEST any crops left or right of houses.
I can harvest fireflies, jelli and barnacle and loam.
I can use your machines but I cannot take them.
I can use your icons but I cannot take them.
I can capture your pigs and apply youth potion to your animals

Edit: Keyholders of your old homes CAN get into your new homes and they can also disassemble machines.

I've heard it's a bug that is preventing ppl from harvesting other ppls crops. I hope this is a bug that isn't fixed.

  • Actually, let me edit that....it appears we can now. I wasnt able to the first day so I stopped trying.

  • Did the devs change it so RHK machines can't be picked up by the non owner? Cool.  I wonder if it's different for friends vs non-friends vs keyholders?

The crop/herb thing is supposed to have been fixed today.

Edit: I see that RHK machines are again pickupable.  Too bad. I wish the devs would let us lock them to the street.

  • The option to disassemble machines doesn't come up for me, it just says that only the owner OR a keyowner of the street can do that. (for now, keys are only relative to old houses, not new ones)

  • Tibbi: from what I can see, it hasn't been fixed. I was really hoping they would leave that one alone.

  • If they fix the garden/herb thing so other people can collect I'm not wasting any imagination or currants on seeds ....
I'm giving to a point but I need all the rubeweed I can get, still no doll :(

  • well you can always use your back yard in your house for crops, no one can get to those but you, until they (if they do) change the keys to our new houses.

  • Hybie, keyholders do have access to the new houses and are allowed to do everything in your back garden

  • Damn, that explains why nobody's been using my community garden as such... they CAN'T.

  • Glitch log says they've fixed it but it didn't work when I just checked, it may only work on next planting.

  • Thank you, TS, for making gardens usable by everyone in the /home streets! I was hoping for this. :D <- Is happy camper!

  • I actually reported that as a bug a few days ago and they said it was intentional but they might change it. Looks like they did! :D

  • WebWeaver: Thanks for the info on keys. I'll add it to the list up there.

  • Well, the bug is fixed. It appears you can now harvest crops in ppls front yards. :(

  • Hybie: What is the problem with that? If you don't want people doing what the front yard garden is intended for, you're not forced to have a garden there, have it in your backyard. Safe. Secure.

  • I know I'm not forced, never said I was forced. Guess I just liked the idea of additional space for planting. I have gardens in both the front and back, no intention of getting rid of the ones in the front.

  • I believe that when housing resets you'll be able to spend lots of imagination on backyard gardens if what you want is lots of personal planting space.  And if you don't enjoy providing community gardens, you can fill your street with other things.  (The one-of-each limit for this test is, I think, meant as a bit of a balancer for giving us all the cultivation stuff free.)

  • I wish that visitors were bared from interacting with gardens. Or beter yet set it so only key holders can access my street.

  • I like that home streets are public. You can manage that space a little but you can't control it with an iron grip. You can decide what to make available to your visitors but you don't have a lot of tools to allow you to discriminate between which visitors you want to privilege and which ones you don't. You can give out keys to people you trust and you can ban people who are harassing you. How much more control do you need for what ought to be considered a public space?

  • Another thing you can do is to ask friends not to put you on their street signs. If you are on a lot of street signs you are more likely to get random visitors.

  • it's not really that big a deal...for me it was just the thought of a lot of space to grow before finding out it was a bug. I still plan on using the front gardens. I don't need control, it was never about control, I dont think anyone was talking about control. The only reason I made this post was to show ppl what you could and couldnt do as their was a lot of confusion in global.

  • Pee on their front doors.

  • I like to have items in the front yard that is available to all players, such as ore, trees, jellisacs, etc. Since we are allowed two gardens, one in front and one in back, I like being able to take advantage of using both as I make many potions that I donate to different groups.
The only issue I have with people being able to harvest from my herb garden, is that it isn't easy to replace seeds from the flowers if they aren't there to be shucked. Will herb seeds be made available at gardening vendors? Otherwise, I would like to see this ability removed from any players without a key.
That's my two cents. Have a great day. :)

  • I've always thought IrenicRnonda was pretty amazing, but now I know she can manage to be wrong in a thread in which she didn't even post. That's pretty awesome.  ;)

Folks -- the post at the beginning of this thread is fairly far out of date.

Hybie-- want to update your post (or at least add a disclaimer that much of it no longer applies)? It was a very useful post a month ago and could be so again..
