Like Glitch? Install the debug Flash player!

Hey there-

We want to let you know that we'd like to get more players using the debug version of the Flash player.

Installing the debug Flash player gives our noble engineering team lots more information to help solve those pesky lag, freezing, and other (dare I say it?) glitches that you experience in the game. This information is separate from what you tell us in a bug report.  A lot of  error reports from the regular Flash player just aren't helpful enough to get to the root of the the problem, and we find ourselves sad that you are experiencing these things, and frustrated that we can’t do more to fix these issues.  So, make a dev happy today!  Install the Debug Flash Player.

To make it easy for you, we created some documentation on how you can install the debug version of the Flash player while you beta test Glitch.

beta.glitch.com/help/faq/#q27

Thanks!

  • Is it possible on Chrome to have only one flash version?  I would love to install the debugger, but when I do the about:plugins this is the only Flash version showing Version:10,3,181,26

Can I just disable this and install the debugger?  Thanks for any feedback/help....not normally this dense!

  • Hey, just so everyone knows-as a double check that you have the DEBUG version installed take a peak and your address bar when you enter the game. I noticed mine says beta.glitch.com/game/?swf_which=DEBUG  so check if yours does.

    Edited:This is for Chrome.

  • I am so sad, I cannot enter the world through chrome or firefox, continue to get shockwave plug in errors/flash crash.  Have been trying to enter world at Gori Blear since last test when had same problem.  Browser freezes up after unpacking.  This is the 14th time.  I have the debugger installed on both browsers, now what?

  • I installed it on both my desktop and laptop - hope it helps :)

  • Originalauntie, we have had some error reports from the browser as it was trying to login, on one occasion at least, the connection timed out, meaning there was a loss of communication to your computer from our servers. I'll see what we can find out on the other ones.

welshcorgi: Chrome uses an integrated one by default. I don't even know if you *can* remove it and have the browser work properly; it is installed with the browser and updates itself when the browser does. I would just leave that one alone and select the other one that points to the debug version. The other, second one that Chrome *should* detect would be in a different location altogether, one that Firefox would access.

  • @kevbob Thank you for the clarification for Chrome!  Entering the world, I see I am  on the debugging version.  Hope it helps!

Edited to remove the word "not"

  • You can remove (well, disable) Chrome's built-in flash player to use the debug player!  You should probably add this info to the faq, too, I have to tell people this in game all the time. =)

    1) Open a new tab and go to about:plugins
    2) In the upper right, there will be a + symbol next the word Details.  Click that.
    3) You should see two entries for Flash at this point.  The one that ends in "gcswf32.dll" is the one that's built-in to Chrome.
    4) Click disable. Make sure you click the one that's directly under the filename and not the one at the bottom of the section or you'll turn Flash off completely.

  • Thanks Kevbob, I hope there is a solution.  Last test was going so well, I was gardening my little glitch heart out, until the last three hours and they were spent trying to enter Gori Blear, haven't been able to get in since.  FYI I will get a timed out message when using FF, when I use Chrome, I get shockwave plugin unresponsive message.  I also ran a PC cleaning program, system is running smoothly, also uninstalled current flash and installed "other browser version" still no luck.  Crossing my fingers that I can play again soon.

  • Originalauntie, when you are stuck logging in, could you please see if you can generate a bug report from the bug icon?

  • Hi Kevbob, I will try, my most recent experience was successfully entering the world on Thursday nite (eastern) from a different pc which has an older version of flash on ie. Then internet was down Friday nite from storm. I have installed an older version of flash on my office pc and will have to wait until next time test is open to see if this allows me in. I really appreciate the continued help. :)

  • Since installing the debugger version, I'm noticing a shadowy humanoid 'box' behind my avatar when messing around with stuff in the Wardrobe. It's just a minor annoyance because it immediately goes away and doesn't actually interact with anything... but I thought I'd mention it.

  • Done! And thanks for the detailed instructions on disabling Chrome's own Flash player.

  • I installed the debugger for this last test. I had less crashes. However, Chrome was so slow that it effectively wasn't worth playing on. I switched to FF. I still had a few crashes when I tried to enter/leave my house. Also, while the game is readying/unpacking, I can't talk in chat because this messes things up (crashes game) quite often. I wasn't able to send any reports this past test. I will try to help more next test.

  • The only trouble is that it isn't working to play 4oD programs. Back to the other version.

  • I downloaded the debugger version and installed it, but since then there were several notifications of a later version and one of us installed it so when I went to the page on Adobe it said I have 10.3.181.26. I'm using FF4 on Windows 7. So I've now uninstalled that one again, and reinstalled the Flash debug version and now it says I have version 10.1.
In the Flash Player Settings manager, on the Global Notifications tab, there are options for Adobe to remind you when a new version of the Flash player comes out. I've turned it off so hopefully we won't install a non-debugging version again. Now when I visit the page that tells me what version I have, it confirms that I have the debugger version.

  • I installed the debug version, and would then get ActionScript errors on some pages in a popup box. This was annoying enough for me to uninstall it again.

  • Okay, got it installed this time...thought I had it for the last test, but I goofed on part of the chrome directions...okay...so, all ready...now what?!  Open Open Open...yea, I know...end of the week...

  • I had installed the debug version the first time I reported a bug (thru the bug icon and it had mentioned it) right after joining Glitch. But when I checked it after reading this thread, the flash site said I wasn't running the debug version.
So I followed the FAQ instructions and saw that my "details" screen was showing both versions as being enabled.
I went ahead and made sure that the versions were correct and then disabled both of them and then re-enabled the debug version (coz I wanted to make sure that the debug version was, in fact, enabled {since I'm totally clueless as to how these things actually work...just hoping I didn't mess anything up doing it that way} ) So I got my fingers crossed that I did everything right and it helps y'all out :)

(And I apologize if the debugger didn't actually do anything to help y'all even tho I had installed it from the beginning  :(  )

  • Well, I muddled my way through all this and hope I got it right ~The Adobe page "find flash player version" says 'Debug Player: Yes'. Hope it all works...
Posted 18 months ago by ~Scilly~ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • ...Mine still says "No" on the adobe page ... so what am I doing wrong? - Or will it not show there since it is the Chrome one I am using?

  • Hi Kevbob,

Having a few problems, as far as I can tell for IE9 I have flash debug version working,
WIN 10,3,181,26     debug player yes yippee,
    but
when I tried switching to firefox it says I do not have a flash player.

    So uninstalled flashplayer
Installed the debug version for firefox first
Installed the IE9 debug version second and bingo

Both are now showing debug versions of Flash.

Hope this might help anyone else trying to get flash onto two browsers.

Just hoping when I restart my compy it will remain so. Gonna go try that now. and yes!!! I have them both running debug versions now, yippeee I feel so accomplished lol.

  • Will this work with a non-intel mac?

  • Could you add installation instructions for linux to the faq please?
Posted 18 months ago by martian-b Subscriber! | Permalink
  • martian-b the linux installation will likely vary according to distro, it is possible that libflashplayer.so is what you are already using if you are running ubuntu and installed flash for a browser other than chrome. You may still need to check what chrome is using if you installed it after, but directions for installing flash are well supported on community sites for each distro.
Feel free to drop me an in-game mail if you are having issues, and I will try to help you.

  • I use Opera and haven't had any crashes but a few bad lag times. Any way of installing the debugger for Opera. I know you don't officially support it but it is a very reliable browser and popular in Europe. Thanks

  • I would gladly install the debug plugin, however I cannot find a debug build for 64-bit Linux. I presume the one linked to in the FAQ is for 32-bit operating systems and I myself could not find the debug build for 64-bit Linux. Am I correct in deducing that it isn't an important concern for Adobe at the moment or did I just miss something?
