Icons 101 - Everything you need to know.

What they are: A "super emblem" of each giant that depends on your finances to keep it running, It also can gift its services without necessary and direct interaction.

How to make it: You get 11 emblems of the SAME giant and hit iconize (must all be in your inventory), and boom, an Icon is made and 10 of your slots can breathe.

Looks: Like a frame of each giant. To some, mostly mui feo. I like Pot since he's shiny.

Strategy: You can make icons right after you get your first emblems (needed to get those certain skills). And try making the icons of giants that are tiered to skills that you want to invest in. (More input upon your guy's comments)

Actions:

Place & Pick up: Icons are just as secure as distillers when it comes to placement. If you place it outside your house, it can't be stolen unless you depart from it (moving and going to hell when AFK). Like a distiller, you can't put it in others houses (oh hey bob, I think I dropped one of my icons here, and someone took the same one of yours earlier). People cannot take icons that are in others houses, which was a good idea.

Emblem Similarities:

Reflect: Gives some random amount of XP
Revere: Gives some random amount of Mood
Ruminate: Gives some random amount of Energy
~Like having two emblems of the same kind, having to icons of the same giant is useless unless you want to sell the other icon(s).

Differences:

-Benefits are bigger
-You have to tithe it (preferably when it asks you or hinders your from other benefits), to keep it functional, whether or not a new day passes.

You get Giant Love:

Now, I’m not sure if the frequency of love depends on how much you tithe it (although you don't have to tithe to get giant love when the icon is "dry". Thank you Scarlett Bearsdale), but I do know that purposely walking around back and forth isn’t a good idea to get your love. It’s mostly random (as if they have a radar gun that measures with planks/second). Best would be to put them by places of your house that you pass by at some time of the day or a lot. For me, I had a 7.5k bog house that had 3 floors. I use the 3rd floor to enter the house, and 1st floor to collect meat, milk and such. In the 2nd (middle floor) I lined up all of my icons of the time and received a lot of love without having to walk back and forth expecting something that wasn’t going to come.

About tithing and how to counteract them (if you can):

-The fee increases as you level up. (Pay some low level kid the money to pay for your tithes, you can’t use alts since that would be considered “mulling”)

-Tithe only when it asks you to do so, never before you are able to use the icon's action as I've mentioned somewhere(?) for it will not count towards the icon's upkeep.  (Thanks  Scarlett)

-Keys and Icons: This is probably one of the worst things about icons. They cannot que tithes... I’ll explain: So you and your theoretically good friends always tithe after use, which is nice, and is a good habit. But what if the icon is already happy?! They just get favor, waste their money, and then when you’re up to use the icon, you lament that some jerk did not tithe. Alas s/he did, but the icon couldn’t use/save the money for service continuation purposes, and instead gave your friend favor (which isn’t much). I leave my icons all happy, I have a lot, so I don’t individually use them and the Giant love is awesome enough. I use icons when my friend is standing there, so I can use it, then trade and give him/her the money in advance. (Having them tithe multiple times in front of you when the icon is happy won't make a difference.)

-Using tithe to get favor. Simple question: “Do you have 1 million currants?” If not, then it isn’t really worth it, since you only get a small amount of favor (based on a small percentage on the amount of money you have, and it can be different even then.) This does not contribute to the icons upkeep. You might as well buy meat, or some sort of item on the auction house [preferably to the value that it is worth for by a vendor], and go to a shrine to donate it. You do make some other glitchen happy in the process. What I DO NOT know about icons, is whether the ‘voluntary’ tithe affects how well it gives Giant Love, or whatever else it might do.

Things you might need to know:
-They do not rot away if you don’t tithe.
-They are not very intelligent, if you have full mood and energy, Giant Love benefits might try to give you mood and energy, instead of giving you XP or Favor.
-As you level up, it is true the the cost of tithing does too, but the amount of money you make stays constant. E.g. if AK7's benefits increased based on your level, then it would make sense why tithes should go up.

I think I got everything...

Feedback? Ideas? What am I missing? Poor grammar or spelling? Crappy format?!
I’m open ears and will make changes when possible.

  • Anybody try donating an Icon to a shrine?  What happens?
Posted 11 months ago by Ari Cloud Subscriber! | Permalink
  • You can't, can't do the same to an emblem either.

  • Each tithing provides enough charge for 4 actions.  Do not tithe before those actions are used.

You can still get Giant Love when tithing is required.  Giant Love does not count towards actions that drain charges from tithing.

  • Cool, I should point that out. I was just curious to whether tithing more meant more giant love.

  • Small correction:  the action for energy is Ruminate, not Replenish.

  • I thought about that while I was typing this up lol. Thanks for the pointer!

  • If you have multiple Icons of the same giant does your chance of receiving Giant Love increase?
Posted 11 months ago by acadaca Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Ruminate - Mood
    Revere - Energy

  • Also, I believe that you have a greater chance of getting a higher bonus on the first "charge" you tithe, and diminishing chances/bonuses after that, but that's unconfirmed.

  • Ari Cloud. Yes, they don't take it and the comment is quite funny. The Giants are neither impressed or unimpressed...etc

  • If I walk past all my girlfriend's icons and revere each one I get between 150 and 400 xp on each one.

If I tithe before I revere, regardless of if it is asking for it or not, I can get over 1000 xp on the majority of them (8/11).

It is expensive but it works and I'm calling this confirmed since I've done it a zillion times. You guys should try it over a few days if you have the money to spare.

  • I reflect on mine once every game day (unless I'm doing something and don't feel like going home) and I get random numbers. Sometimes, I get over 1k in XP from refecting (whether I've tithed or not) sometimes a little less (I'm wondering if mood affects this, but it doesn't seem to), and when I walk by I can get anywhere from over 400 XP to over 1.2k in XP from them, I also get random charges of energy, mood and favor from them when i walk by, but it's REALLY random what you'll get when you walk by.

  • I am curious why, when my icon is requesting a tithe, on mouseover of an action it will say, "This icon requires a tithe of 121 currants to become operational." But my tithe is actually a different (much higher) amount.  I am assuming the 121 currants is the minimum tithe required from anyone?  But it's a little confusing.

  • what about how often you walk past the icon?  does that have anything to do with how often it asks for a tithe?
Posted 11 months ago by Treesa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Treesa, if you never RRR, you never have to tithe but they will still give you Giant love when you walk by.
Posted 11 months ago by MaryLiLamb Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Miel, I'd pass it down to a failure in the process of creating icons, or bug.
Posted 11 months ago by Rook Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The 121 currant tithe is just the default, it actually goes up each time you level, mine still says 121, but its 1400 odd in realty, so not a bug at all.

  • Giant Love (the stuff you get just from walking past) does not have anything to do with how often you tithe, how recently you tithed, or cause you to tithe more often.

  • The only useful thing to having two of one icon is that you can keep one in your bag for energy, and one in your house for possible Giant Love.

  • Thanks again Rook(and friends) for another 'quickie' that hit the spot. I know that I, as well as others, now look at our Icons in a whole new way...
So let's see, that's two quickies so far, ready to tackle a third? =P
Now this is only a suggestion and you can pass on it if you want to, but what about those machines that are used to make blocks and fuel? I remember back in beta(1?) we actually used them quite often with all the street projects we had and whatnot but lately they seem to have been pushed aside. So maybe for people that aren't familiar with them, and because they probably will become more usefull soon with the new housing changes(I'm guessing, maybe you know more??) they can be your next topic. Or is there really much to talk/inform about in this area? I don't know that's why your the go to man...and if not then pick another topic...?

  • Have you put this info in the wiki as well - that would be awesome!

  • I'm still a bit confused.  I had my icon in my inventory for a while now and I just ruminated, etc every game day and never needed to Tithe.  After reading this thread I placed the icon in my house and it immediately asked me to tithe.

Why would you place the icon? Why not just keep it in the inventory?  Was this just a  coincidence?
Posted 11 months ago by Coconut Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Osprey cool

@Sir Mixalatte, I guess I could, but that would take up a lot of time, the wiki is good enough ^_^.

@Hen vla Ham, no I haven't, the wiki covers more than I do, and only a few things could be put in there...

@Coconut Maybe you had an awesome bug? Or maybe you just used one action...but it asked for a tithe when you put it down. It could be a coincidence. I don't know really. Maybe because it was a new icon, it had more uses on it? I haven't experimented with just using one action, or holding an icon in my bag (for fear of giving it away).
Posted 11 months ago by Rook Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Rook - I was doing all three actions.  It is a pretty new icon but I was pretty sure i had used all the actions for than 4 times before setting it down.  Maybe not though, I honestly can't remember...

Is the fear of giving it away the reason everyone seems to keep them in their house? I still don't really see the benefit of leaving them behind at my house.  It seems whenever i need them most, i'm away from home doing other stuff.  Am I missing something about keeping them in my house?
Posted 11 months ago by Coconut Subscriber! | Permalink
  • People leave icons in their house because when an icon is on the ground it can give you "giant love" - a random bonus similar to one you would get if you used it (though sometimes it gives favor).  Giant love does not diminish the uses between tithes.
Posted 11 months ago by Humbabella Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Oh ok, I think it had to do with it being new.

There are walking packs of energy around Ur.
Posted 11 months ago by Rook Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Coconut...I think we all may be missing something if what you say is possibly true. It seems everytime I walk in the house it's pay-up time to Mr. Icon, started feeling like I was paying rent to live there lol. I'm gonna try carrying/using it and see what happens...

  • What is tithe(ing)?
Posted 11 months ago by Zozabell Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I can add a couple of other observations.

If you have your low lvl buddy tithe the icons they seem to remember how much the tithe was when giving out favors. In other words if you are lvl 60 and have your lvl 15 friend tithe the icon you will find that your reveres and other blessings are weaker than normal. They seem to be about 2/3 as strong which isn't a bad deal when you consider how little your buddy has to tithe. Always have your lower lvl friend tithe for you if they are around unless you absolutely need the max exp off the icon. It's a better deal.

I have also noticed that the big blessings seem to come right after you tithe. The bigger the tithe the better the blessings tend to be and more importantly the higher your level, the better the blessing.

I may be mistaken in this assumption but I believe Giant love does use up charges!

I have walked by icons on several occasions that were not complaining about needing to be fed and then after a Giant love they start bitching at me. It is possible that I am just tripping and not paying much attention at the time but I am pretty sure I have seen this happen more than once.

The advantage to giant love is that it can grant very large favor bonuses and it also allows you to get random double uses out of your icons in a single game day. For instance you could have already reflected upon the icon for exp and then you might get a random Gian love that gives an addition exp bonus.

The other reason, and I think it is the primary one for leaving icons out in your house, is that your visiting friends can use them.  : )

  • Thanks Melting, I've only had one icon ask for a tithe that way, but I think it might have been a key holder.

I'll take your observations into account.

@zozabell Paying currants to a giant's icon. IRL means tax or whatever.

  • I've been noticing my icons occasionally asking for tithes before my 4 uses are up. I decided to keep track this time. All icons were dry, I tithed them all at the same time. I have used them all 3 times each over a period of three real-time days, and now 2 are asking for tithes. I asked those with a key to my house and none claim to have used the icons. Has this been an issue for anyone?
Posted 10 months ago by Csophae Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yes, I have noticed mine ask to be Tithed before I have used all the actions.  They have always done that, so I thought it was normal.  I read above that they use all four actions, but mine don't.

No-one has been in my house to use them, so it must just happen like that.
