How unsafe is living in Aranna?

I'm scouting all the tree houses available on the realty and found one that I like in Aranna, thanks to the previous person leaving so many animals there. But when I check the map it got big warning of high risk of rook attack. How unsafe is my home? Will the rooks attack my garden and animals if I move there? Anything I have to aware beside what wiki says?

Thanks.

  • I have no idea but I've decided I am going to move up there soon. it's pretty.

  • It's not terribly unsafe, but it is rather inconveniently located.  Very far from a subway station, and there is no grocery vendor in the region; the closest grocery vendor is clear on the other side of the next zone south.

  • Tch, and it used to be such a nice nehibourhood, y'know, before it was imagined. I jest! Just buy it! And if there are rooks, it'll make it fun and give you a reason to join in defeating them!

  • As far as I'm aware, Rooks don't attack individual houses, and probably not residential streets.  Frankly, rook attacks just aren't particularly frequent, and they're usually cleaned up pretty quickly.  If you want to feel more secure/prepared, of course, you could always learn Martial Imagination and Piety.

Now, as DJ Plaid mentions, the real problem might be that Aranna isn't a very convenient place to live, since it's only half finished and regions away from a subway stop.  But I've always loved living in so-called "border regions," it always feels so peaceful and quiet!  (And I know I'm always just one teleport away from Groddle/Ix/Uralia if need be.)

And now it looks like you've already bought your place in Aranna, so enjoy! :)  (And fight that Rook!!!  >:D)

  • I've lived there a couple of RL days, and still don't know what a Rook is or what it does.

Would someone please explain about Rooks? Nothing I've read has helped my understanding. And I haven't experienced them first hand.

As for the distance, youn just need to set up Teleport locations in the right places. I have one at my front door and one near the subway station in Groddle Meadows.

  • @Master:

Basically, the Rook is the antithesis of imagination and thus creation in the world of Ur. Flying around the heads of the Giants, it pesters and distracts them to the point where imagination breaks down and the fabric that holds Ur together becomes weaker. In order for Glitchen to stay imagined (alive!), the Rook and its pesteryness (!) needs to be kept at bay.

  • @jannisary: yeah I wander around the area and loving it. Forests? check. Mountains? check. Caves for mining? check. Quiet? Spot a few players already but not crowdy.

Now the challenge is to keep the animals alive while I hasn't got the skill for the automatic stuffs the previous owner left.

  • If you don't stockpile too much stuff in your dwellings, you can always change houses again if you don't like it.

  • Kinda sucks for anyone on the Piety tree, but the rooks attacks seem to be quite rare, probably another thing they are waiting to reintroduce until everyone has the requisite skills. Of course at that point, the rook will go back to being kinda humdrum... nasty catch-22 there.

  • I imagine that the Rook will eventually do more than just depress the local wildlife.  Picture what happens when the Rooks start deimagining streets, and tell me that they're humdrum.

Flirty, I agree with your suspicious that TS doesn't want to reintroduce Rooks too frequently until there are enough people with Piety in the game - but if there aren't Rook attacks happening, Piety seems pretty weak.  *And* even if they are more frequent, my understanding is that Rook fighting is a serious energy drain, without much game reward.

So, why would Glitchen want to learn to be Rook fighters?

  • I wish there were more larger houses in Aranna. I'd move there in a heartbeat.

  • Welcome to the frontier, rosedragon! We who live in beautiful Aranna, enjoying its awesome mountains and blue skies, have the opportunity to study the rook close at hand. As we learn and gain new skills, we look forward to the day when we can combat the rook and add to the beauty and bounty of Ur.  Where there is unimagined territory, there is much scope for the imagination.

  • I recently upgraded from my tree home in Aranna to a much larger 50k house, and although I love my new home, I dearly miss Aranna.  It's utterly gorgeous there.  And fairly quiet.  Groceries and the subway were a pain but I have a teleport bound in Ix for that reason.

Over the course of the week+ I was there, there was only maybe a single rook attack there that I saw.  (And I'm pretty sure they don't attack homes or districts.)  I honestly wish it were a little MORE dangerous, but as others have said, I think they're waiting for people to get MI and Piety.

    In the meantime:

  • Splendora: Agreed.

I moved to Aritakaya Kaya  long before I had Teleportation I, and--though the streets between Aranna and the subway station were well-worn by my travels--I wouldn't change it for anything. The northeast regions are really starting to become as diverse as Groddle, as far as trees and things, and the scenery is amazing.

...And I've only seen a couple easily avoidable Rook attacks (both on public streets) since I moved there.

(I may end up moving back to my pre-re-set Alakolish regions eventually--I miss the grey haze--but Aranna remains super-awesome.)

  • @rosedragon if you just leave piles of veg lying around your pigs will eat them. I think tomatoes are particular favourites.

  • I was in the middle of a rook attack a couple of weeks back. The appeared on the street in which my housing quarter is in. I have heard of Rook attacks in the actual housing quarters, but I personally have not experienced it. One of the developers tried to help us with the attack - no luck. None of us had piety yet, though he and a couple of other people had Martial Imagination.

  • @momo : i think that will be a waste while i cant gather from the gathering unit... Half wild piggies on the settlement itself seems more.. convenient.

I want to see the rooks :) though i want to make sure that the area doesn't have to be 'deadly if you got no parties to escort you'.

Yeah I wish there is bigger tree house XD .

  • When I bought my house in Aratikaya Kaya I was one of two in my "block" and there was hardly anyone else around. Now there's not a single house left in Aratikaya Kaya! I think the "rook attacks" thing attracts people, at least now more and more people have Teleport 2 or 3 so the inconvenience is less of a problem (and now that Pollokoo and Callopee are attracting mining types to that corner of the world). Aranna may even be the next region to sell out of houses completely, or at least to sell out of everything but 1,500 apartments.

I've never seen a Rook yet, although I joined the Rook Attacks group when I moved to Aranna!
