Civility

It always surprises me when someone I admire/like "loses it" and posts something belligerent.  It seems like a complete turnaround and makes me question their rl character.  Not comfortable.  A recent topic was closed, and all the OPs comments changed to a rude message.  (kind of amusing that it was done in parts, but still..)  The original information was very useful, and got me googling--I hadn't heard of the subject at all before reading here.  It was a little inaccurate in places, but that was clarified by other posters.  No problem.  At least from where I sat. But for whatever reason, the OP was offended, and decided to attack.  Maybe the summer heat got to much, maybe lack of sleep, whatever.  It doesn't even matter, we all get that way sometimes.  But I've seen sooo many emotional outbursts in the forums, and really, how much does it cost to be considerate of other people?  Just imagine that person is a co-worker or neighbor, and you're going to see them tomorrow, the next day, etc. etc.  Better be civil, or things will be reallly awkward, lol.   Maybe write up the angry message, yell all you want....just don't hit enter.  Give yourself time to put things in perspective, don't spoil your own experience in Glitch by venting publicly.   "Play nice."

Ok, preachybarf message over.

  • I'm the leader of the Civility group and I approve this message lol. Shameless plug time:

Okay plug over. Thanks Phoebe Springback for this thought provoking post. My favorite definition of Civility is "The act of showing regard for others". I do not dictate how others play. That being said, I think some of the following I've observed falls in the category of Incivility.

    1) Taking items from one's home street obviously meant for the visual joy and appreciation of others- Nicking a whole crab cubimal army for instance.

    2) One person taking every single food/drink or other items left for the whole community to enjoy. Philanthropic groups like Community Kitchen & Civility and Community minded "sharing" groups like Freebie Jeebies aim to help the community. Thus, it is only common courtesy that if you take objects, even if you have no means to replace them at that time; at the very least, do not take them all and instead leave some for other members of the community.

    3)  Taking all the objects in a Street art project without replacing with any objects to retain some artistic nature of the original work.

    4) Constantly using other's resources and never helping anyone with restoration of projects.

    5) Taking the kindness of others for granted by not even thanking someone who does something nice for you as part of their group or otherwise. Community Kitchen members do not have to deliver food to you- a note of thank you would be a kind way to express your thanks for their chef skills :)

I have seen SO much good in this community of Ur so much that I do what I can to further it. That being said, I think it could be even better if we did indeed practice more Civility and really show this regard for others in a spirit of empathy, mutual respect and total non-discrimination. Okies, getting off my soapbox now :D

*hugs* and Cheers, Have a great day all :D

  • This is the reason Civility is such an amazing online community.  I have played Glitch for several months now but never became a subscriber until I joined Civ.  I had purchased tokens before, but didn't subscribe because I often became bored with some of the more routine activities and leveling up wasn't very exciting to me. After joining Civ, even the most mundane activities are so much fun.

The spirit of Glitch thrives in our sub committee of Civility.

  • Took the words right out of my mouth Phoebe. Sometimes I feel completely blindsided by the venom people spew, especially when it's directed towards a very friendly message. I just don't get it.

  • That sort of venomous bile is why I generally avoid the forums and stick to my groups, one of which happens to be Civility. It's more fun for everyone when people play nice. It's an important lesson we all should have mastered in kindergarten but many forget.

  • i think people often display behavior online that is socially unacceptable in real life.  maybe it is because there is some anonymity. it's a shame really.

  • Showing regard for others is good, but assuming that you know what others are thinking is not so good.  Take some of BachJess' examples, for instance: some people decorate their streets with items and expect that others will not take them, while others leave items out specifically so that others will take them.  People often assume that greed motivates others to take things left on a public street, but sometimes it's just an urge to clean.  Some players want help with their projects, while others are looking to wear down unwanted cultivations in order to remove them; restoring without asking first might seem like an act of kindness, but it could upset the owner's plans.

Also, many forget that a lot of players are children, and despite the 14+ age requirement (and despite abuse reports), some younger kids continue to play; expecting them to behave as adults will surely lead to disappointment.

  • @ Bachjess

Thank you for that amazing post!  I really love it that you gave so many simple, clear-cut examples of uncivil behavior. It is so much more helpful to focus on what people are doing rather than on what people are saying. Also thanks for mentioning the philanthropic groups, Freebie Jeebies and Community Kitchen.
