requesting tips & problem solving for pig herds

Hi there, I am trying to optimize my pig farming and ran into problems.

I had 4 pigs, a feeder and a meat collector and it worked pretty well. I am now up to eight pigs and 3 meat collectors and they produce zero meat :/. I have one of those cave houses so i moved 2 meat collectors indoors away from the pigs and left 1 with the pigs. Still nothing for the past few days.
The pigs definitely eat every day, just no meat production. I have been feeding them grain except for today where i fed the piggies back to themselves just to amuse myself :P

I have heard herd keeping can be a little finnicky. Any tips on getting the pigs producing again?
Also, I have heard of a meat fountain and get the general idea, but I have never seen a how to. Any tips?

Thanks!

  • On the issue, I've got nothing.

But as for the meat fountain: get a ton of pigs, get a powder of startling fecundity, release powder, voila: meat fountain.

  • i thought there was  a limit on the amount of pigs per street. I assumed that limit carried over to homes. I guess not :P

  • There is a limit -- it's around 30 piggies.  Which still makes a pretty effective meat fountain.

  • You might pick up the meat collector that's left with the pigs and place it back down.  When my collector stopped working a while back, that fixed the problem.

I think you still have to occasionally hand-feed pigs, even with the feeder full.  I feed each of mine one egg every other time I log in, which amounts to about every other RL day or less often because I don't always remember.  A tip for keeping track which pigs have been taken care of is to name them numerically (or alphabetically, as you prefer).  My pigs are named in Spanish, and my butterflies in French.  :D

  • 3 meat collectors and 8pigs is probably too many collectors. Too many in ratio to the pigs and they get confused and don't give the meat.

You also mustn't overlap the collectors or they don't work. there has to be some room between them.

6 collectors for my 25 pigs seems to be the right amount. I never hand feed my pigs, I sometimes pet and nibble by hand to use up energy before logging off so I gain max on the new day. Hand (?) nibbling pigs and getting extra with startling fecundity powder make no difference to the yield from the collectors.

  • Hmm, my collectors overlap almost completely and still work. They stopped working only when I literally put them in the exact same spot. I have four for 13 pigs and they get full overnight.

  • meat collectors need to be near the pigs,  I think.  In old-beta, I used to be able to have them in my house and the pigs in the garden and they'd work.  Then they'd stop working.

In my Kajuu house they need to be in the pen to fill up. I have a milker outside the pen and that fills up, but not the collector

  • Pigs do NOT AND I REPEAT DO NOT eat food that is lying on the ground in my house with an empty feeder :/

  • I only have 4 piggies and my meat collector fills up about once every day - day and a half (real time).  I have a villa home, so it's pretty crowded in there, even with only 4.  Maybe it helps if they are forced to be closer to the meat collector at all times?

  • Those wanting to make meat fountains should know that 15 is the max number of animals for fecundity powders.

  • Thank you everyone...i think at one point or another, I violated every one of your tips. (With Sundara, the original meat collector was never moved, With IrenicRhonda, I have meat collectors in the house, but i was hoping there was a distinction between indoors and out doors AND I had them overlap exactly to keep things clean.)

All of you are a huge help :)

  • I have 2 feeders, 3 collectors and 8 pigs and I am swimming in meat.    I have a pen, and the arrangement is [milker] [collector] [feeder][collector][feeder][collector][milker]  with slight gaps between each piece of machinery, and they pretty much take up the whole pen.  The pigs have to walk past the collectors I'm told.  I only feed using the feeders (grain), and I only occasionally pet.

  • just wanted to report back that all is working. I reseated two collectors, spaced them out with two feeders, manually fed everyone some grain and they almost immediately started producing. I went a little crazy and bought too many pigs so i had to scale back :)

    thanks again
