The cooking implement formerly known as the "Mike Tyson Grill"...

I just noticed the change of the grill's name from "Mike Tyson Grill" to "Famous Pugilist Grill."  I actually find this new name more amusing, but I'm curious about the name change.  Did Mr. Tyson's (or perhaps Mr. Foreman's) legal folks become grumpy? Or was it a change to keep everything Glitchy and free of direct references to the world outside Ur?  Or was it some other reason?

As I said, I like the change;  I think it feels more Glitchy than a direct Earth-famous name.  But incessant curiosity is nagging at me...

  • Many of us never really liked it (for the reasons that you mentioned) and we had a recent complaint from a player which made us think more about it, and so we decided to finally change it. No legal threats were involved :)

  • eep. But Mike Tyson Grill was so funny. All grills are now MTGs to me. MTG+emdot=TLA.

  • I'm of the "But Mike Tyson Grill was so funny" persuasion.  :-(

  • I also thought Mike Tyson was funnier. The new name can mean the other guy and it's not as clever.

  • It still says Mike Tyson grill in the subways :p

  • Agreed, Mike Tyson Grill was a much better name. (And the subway poster does still reference the previous name.)

  • I agree that Mike Tyson Grill was more amusing, but that the new name fits better.

  • It's so good, they didn't let him put his name anywhere near it.

  • I, for one, miss the Mike Tyson Grill name. It made me laugh a lot. Oh well. I can understand why.

  • I'd pretty much assumed that some humorless lawyer had sent a C&D, so I'm glad it was actually a voluntary move.  Though I'm with emdot... the real-life thing is now a Mike Tyson Grill to me :-)

  • Thanks for bringing this up. I was wondering about this last night. I miss it being the Mike Tyson Grill. However, I like knowing that I'll be one of the many who knows the original name of the item. It will always be the Mike Tyson Grill to me!

  • I 100% approve of the change for various reason.
In part because I never found MadTV all that funny.

  • I prefer the new name :D
Knew I wasn't the only one to think the change came from a threat to sue, though.

  • I liked the old name It made me laugh the first few times I saw it.

  • I guess that means no 'Sugar Ray Rotisserie' or 'Cassius Clay-pot' in the future. ;D

  • I'm so far out of it - Way too much purple? - that it was several weeks before it dawned on me that Mike Tyson Grill was not the name of the RW product.  Some times the penny drops a little slowly around here!

  • Oh, holy- ! Hawkwell, me neither. Oh dear.

  • +1 on the Cassius Clay-pot reference.  LOL!

I favor the change as well.  I'd prefer it if things stay glitchy and any references to the real world be a little more subtle.

  • It was definitely funnier as 'Mike Tyson grill' but I can see how it would be considered in bad taste (by which I mean actually offensive and triggering to have the name of a convicted rapist in the game, as opposed to risque humour 'bad taste' which I am definitely in favour of).

  • +1 Bagpuss. We still have the grill, it's just more Glitchian in name.

  • The new name is WAAAAAY funnier *because* it references both and is much more Glitchian (+1 Justalice999).

  • I was surprised and offended to see a grill here named after Mike Tyson!! Mike Tyson is a vegan !!!! I mean, I realize it's a game but having a real world reference like that is unmistakable, and it's totally way, way, way off the mark to use his name as a reference for an item that cooks meat. Tyson is featured in PETA advertising and speaks often on their behalf about maintaining health and fitness through a vegan diet and lifestyle. His TV show on Discovery shows his love of animals. Being vegan means you only eat food from plant sources... not animals. No meat or any kind food source from animals (like eggs or milk) or use clothing or shoes, etc. that are made using pieces of animals.  I would imagine that having a grill that is for cooking meat named after him, even in a game, if he knew about it would be likely to deeply offend him. I'm so glad the grill name got changed... thank you!!

  • @Cefeida: It's a little jab (booooooooo) at the George Foreman (another famous heavyweight boxer) grill.

Also, I like the change. I got the joke, but honestly I don't like Mike Tyson.

  • Before we could refer to the Mike Tyson Grill as "the Tyson" . "The Pugilist", just doesn't sound right. I am in the liking Mike Tyson Grill camp. I always thought it was funny too.

  • The name change doesn't upset me as much as changing the goofy face on the grill to a glove :(

  • What I find weird, is that in a game where you can't really be that mean (splanking isn't as fun as I thought it would be) is to have a grill named after a fighter/fighting. I think it should be something with a reference to the rooks. Like "Reclaimed Rook Grill for Glitchen Kabobs" or something else as equally ludicrous.

Maybe there could be a contest where we choose the new name and the glitchizen who wins via votes has their face plastered on the grill and advertisements? I think that could be hella fun.

  • Seconding Cindy's assessment that having an in-game item named after a real-world rapist was not particularly Glitch-like. I appreciate the name change.
