Random Kindnesses

I seem to be getting far fewer Random Kindnesses from gardening now than I did during the last test.
Is this a deliberate policy?
I guess some people are not keen on them but I love them, wandering around distributing them like Lady Bountiful!!
I am up to my ears in musicblocks, but no RKs.

  • I haven't had any drop recently, but I was on a pumpkin-growing spree during Zilleween.

I have some extra (a good four or five) RK's as well, so if you're out, friend me, give me a holler and I can frog one to you.

  • I have spares but I only get them from growing crops. Not sure why that should be!

  • I get them all the time.  I get so many that I have to give them away.  I have a 10 slot bag full of them in my cabinet.  lol

  • I have a little pile of them in my house.  I wish that there was some kind of crit-rate on them (for those of you that aren't hardcore gamers, it means a small chance that it will do something super awesome instead of the regular effect) where you could use it and maybe restore that Glitch back to full or at least give twice as much energy.  Then there could be a badge for it--  "Super Awesome Kindness Fairy" or something.  This would motivate people to use theirs more often, thus stimulating the sharing and community aspect of the game.

  • +1 Sparklebooty I love using them, but if there was a badge or surprising affect I'd love it more.

  • @Sparklebooty: I'd make it not only a chance for super-awesomeness for the recipient, but some kind of boomerang for the bestower. Give some to get some, so to speak.

I feel a little differently about it. If people are provided rewards for doing something, yes, it will promote that activity. I think it would detract from community, though. When someone bestows me with Random Kindness now, I know it's because they're being nice and it makes me smile. If there were rewards involved, however, I'd always assume they were just doing it out of self-interest, because, more often than not, that's exactly why they'd be doing it. That doesn't make me feel closer to the community, it makes me feel like I'm being used to "grind badges," which is a very different thing.

Or maybe fifteen years of online gaming have turned me into a cynic. ;)

  • I don't mind that they "don't do anything", at least not for the person bestowing the kindness. I only have Gardening 3 which may be why they're fairly rare for me (maybe you get more with more skill?).

I tend to use my rare kindness on people who are wearing cute things, help me out, or jump along with me. I feel like you shouldn't get anything other than enjoyment out of random kindness after all it's not random selfishness right?

  • @Eleni: That some form of reward is possible does not mean I'm doing it solely for the reward, especially if the reward is not necessary to my continued well-being or existence. On the other hand, for those who do live in a tit-for-tat world, the potential for a random but modest to significant reward may, in fact, encourage them to offer similar actions in the future, without any knowledge or promise of reward.

That is, if using random kindness has the potential for a return reward, might there be equally random rewards associated with other actions? Do you pet trees solely for the chance that you'll get a super harvest? If you have a high enough Animal Husbandry, and no longer need to pet/massage piggies/butterflies, do you do it anyway?

So, if positive acts have the potential for encouraging similar and like acts as the game develops further (i.e., given either a new verb or new object, we first choose the actions that are positive), then this is something that should exist.

  • I've had half a dozen in the last couple of RL days. I've started dropping them on the street!

  • I haven't encountered a single RK post-beta. :(  I need to start stalking FlickGC, hehe.

  • It's kinda funny, I always assumed that people bestowing random kindness on me were doing it because there was a quest or badge involved. I guess that's just how cynical I am. :(
