access to inventory when when mining/working/etc

I mentioned this in chat over the weekend, but as someone who was doing a bunch of mining I found it a bit bothersome that I didn't have access to view and sort inventory while my toon was locked and working.

I don't have any issue with the not being able to *do* things, but opening bags to see the status of tools or reorganizing where ore or gems are going to as I sit there underground for 5 or 10 minutes would be quite nice.

  • I agree - I have wanted to prep my bags to my next step - for example, go get my blender when I am converting fruit, but I have to wait for my processes to complete.

  • This would be cool, would definitely make it easier to multi task

  • Agreed. It makes sense that the character can't multi-task (e.g. blend something while you're mining) but it would be nice to be able to organize while you're working.

  • I want this. So much.

  • +1. Can't count the number of times I got quacked at for clicking an inventory item while mining.

  • Hmmm - to be the devil's advocate: when was the last time any of you successfully reorganized the credit cards in your (real) wallet while swinging a (real) pickaxe, sledge hammer, or other such heavy two-handed tool?

I know it's a bit of a pain to have to "wait" in the game, but to me it's a valid part of the game. If you want to wait less time while mining, then you get the Rock to learn all of the Mining skills for you so that you can mine quicker. If you could "do" things while waiting for the (literally) time consuming elements of the game, then there would be less penalty for being unskilled, and less reward for doing your training.

    Just my 2 cents :-)

  • I had originally thought that perhaps the ability to multi-task could be an element of higher level versions of skills, or maybe even a stand-alone high level skill. But CL makes a really good point about this being a valid part of gameplay.

  • To play devil's advocate to your devil's advocate: how many times have you carried a knife & board, frying pan, saucepan, bean seasoner, blender, cocktail shaker, spice mill, and fruit changing machine in a bag together with eight other bags full of apples, fancy picks, chunks of rock, and eggs that you picked from an eggplant? If you're worried about being unrealistic, then I think you're playing the wrong game. ;)

Seriously though, we're just talking about reorganizing our inventories, not simultaneously grinding the rock or donating the gems to a shrine.

  • If I had a nickel for every time... ;)

Seriously though, it does make narrative sense that you need to use both hands to perform most manual labors, especially when you're relatively inexperienced at the skill. I mean, maybe *you* can mine a rock with one hand tied behind your back, but I'd need lots of practice before I could attempt such a feat without losing a few eyes!

  • @Herp Derp: Of it's realistic to carry all that... the bags are magical! ;)

But yea, I'm afraid that I'm on the side of No. It's consistent with all other aspects of the game, i.e. you can't do anything while you're petting, watering, meditating, or whatever. Yeah, it would be convenient, but as a game mechanic I think it's fair.
