As I understand it, the Piggy changes were for the most part the result of rebalancing because it was too easy to go and hogtie a piggy, spending only the cost of bait, and get a really over-valued item (a hogtied piggy) that could then be donated or auctioned.  So, it has less to do with population control (though I'm sure that's part of it) but more to do with plugging an obvious exploit that gave players doing a particular activity an unfair advantage over those that do other activities.

Correct me if I'm wrong on my analysis, but the change was welcomed by the majority of the community because it evened out the game play to make it more balanced and kept one aspect of the game (piggy-napping) from being overpowered.

  • **** purchased Ima_do_three's auction of 1x Hog-tied Piggy, for 240 currants.

Understandable, considering labyrinthine nature of your surreptitious intentions. Nevertheless, ONE HUNDRED PIGGIES SHALL AVENGE!

  • i understand that but couldn't the dev's could of stayed out of it and let people work it out where they put pigs or not, and if its about the unfair of the money that shouldn't have happend either because if the pigs spawn not from peole but from the computer who cares who takes them theres just going to be another one to takes its place, and also just making it unable to donate it or sell it to the vendor all it did was make the price of pigs drop some, but people are still going to do it! i do it because one thing of bait is 30 currents and you can sell a pig on auction for 280. it dind't change anything what they did its not unfair about the money also because everybody can go catch pigs!. all they did was just make people mad again.

  • It's their game, they allow me to play it for free, they can do what they like when they like.

    That's my opinion.

  • yeah but i still think they need to get involved in some stuff and not get involved in other stuff

  • The practice was exploitive, and the previous ability was considered a bug. It was fixed.

I would suggest that this topic be moved to the Off-Topic forum.

  • ustice you have a nice house and 7 pigs, care to explalin how you got that much money and pigs?
Posted 14 months ago by Ima_do_three Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Sure! I captured 2 wild piggys, and the rest I bought as piglets, and raised. As for the house and money, well, I harvest and sell fruits mostly, but also some mining. I was reserving some fruits for auction once the prices went up enough to make it worth it, but with the new icons, I've been donating like crazy.

  • I think it was a positive change.  Given the extremely high reward factor one player could gain from taking something another player worked to place, it just didn't seem right.

  • Methinks it would be rather difficult to keep the devs out of this game.

  • @ Ima_do_three

    A few things:

    1) "...because if the pigs spawn not from peole but from the computer who cares who takes them theres just going to be another one to takes its place..."

That's only true in Groddle Meadow, and only for a small number of the pigs there, none of which can be told apart from the player-made pigs. Almost all of the pigs in the game at this point are player-made, requiring player resources.

    2) "i understand that but couldn't the dev's could of stayed out of it and let people work it out where they put pigs or not..."

How could players combat it? Choosing where they put their pigs wouldn't accomplish anything.  Everyone has access to alwaysdata.net and the Greasemonkey script that does the same thing, so anyone who wants to pignap can find the pigs no matter where they are. Furthermore, the whole point of putting pigs you've made in public places is to provide a service to as many people as possible, not just two lucky nibblers who happened to find your hiding spot, and certainly not to an individual who wants to profit at the expense of everyone around them.

Also, unlike trees, there is no poison/antidote mechanism in place. If you put a pig on a street for people to nibble and you stand there to protect it, you're wasting your time. Nothing you do will prevent someone from walking right up to it, grabbing it, and moving on to the next street to do the exact same thing.

    3)  "ustice you have a nice house and 7 pigs, care to explalin how you got that much money and pigs?"

I'm not the one you were asking, but I also have a big house and 15 pigs. How did I get them? I mined and sold beryl and sparkly rocks to a tool vendor for more than a week, then I bought piglets from the auction house.

    4) This isn't EVE Online. Sure, it's sandboxy, but this is not a game about screwing over your neighbor to line your pockets. This is a gentle little family game where pigs are happy to give you some meat for petting them, a game where a crab gives you juice for a kind word and a hug, a game where you sing to butterflies and walk around with an "emotional bear."  Trying to champion PvP ethics in such a game seems like misplaced energy.

  • Well, it was hard sifting through the poor grammar and such, but I pretty much stopped reading after I saw this: "because if the pigs spawn not from peole but from the computer who cares who takes them theres just going to be another one to takes its place."
Clearly Ima_do_three doesn't understand the faulty game mechanics that brought this change about, so sure he/she will find it unfair that he/she can no longer profit from hogtied piggies.

  • Make crystals! They regenerate quicker, worth a little lesser, (but still sustainable) and give the same amount of favor a piggie does. :)

  • the OP does understand the game mechanics, as much as an hour's worth of explaining it to him would take.
his position was simply that he would do what he wished and if it was possible to steal other people's work, then it was also right.

i quit talking to him after hours of messaging, and he messaged me yet today (third day) to gloat about his pig stealing business going well.

after a bazilion gloaty messages about how rich he was getting stealing other people's pigs (just this mornign he messaged me to tell me he has a WHOLE 5,000 currants!), i finally went off the deep end and called him a couple of names he most rightly deserves.

not only is he a thief, but he is a liar and anyone who wants to go through the logged IMs can easily see this for "theirsleves".

i do not expect that anyone will go through the logged IMs to prove it, since the matter is closed, but let's not feel sorry for the poor boy who's too lazy to work and comes to the forum to whine and make accusations against people who have pigs.

by the way, most of us have stolen pigs to get our herd started. most of us also have replaced many more than we took. i stole one. and every day i hatch new piglets and put them in the streets. you can tell; if you've ever seen a pig named "trombone", euphonium",or "tuba", that's one of mine.

i have never sold a stolen pig.

the OP has been harassing me for three days to tell me how rich he's getting by stealing and selling them.

i applaud the new change. happily the rate for pigs at auction will now go down since there's not much cash value in them anymore.

the OP should have kept hisself out of somethings.

  • @flask  I doubt highly that anyone here really feels sorry for this individual.  Their complaining seems rooted in misplaced assumptions (both of the game mechanics and their own importance).

That said, pignapping is an in-game mechanic that has its place.  Pigs can and should be moved around from highly populated areas to less populated areas so that they are available throughout (in doing the piggy-snatching quest, I placed several on residential streets that didn't have any).  If it's in the game, there's likely a good reason for it, so it makes no sense to stigmatize anyone that "steals" a pig.
