On Potion Making and Voyeurism

I think I'm going to skip the potion making skill chain, and here's why:

Earlier today I was privileged to witness a set-to in a community herb garden that involved, amongst other things, the extortion of around 1000 currants to leave planted herbs unpicked.  Not just the threat: the successful extortion.  Because it is worth it so pay 1000 to "rent" a public space.

It's really fascinating to me to see this kind of emergent behavior.  I couldn't help wishing that martial imagination could be used on Glitches, or that five Glitches acting together could teleport someone *away,* just because that seemed like where the little drama was going.

I'll admit I was humbled when the natural thing happened: one generous Glitch made a completely normal offer to share their excess seed and guano as they finished up, and made a point of excluding one of the hooligans.

All that being said, I think the drama and stress surrounding herbs and potions is maybe more than I want to deal with.  I wish you all well and look forward to trading powders for potions at some time in the future.

  • At this point, I think a crop-space-for-herb-space trade in housing would be the best thing to do. The extortion was hardly the worst part of that situation, as I understand it, and I want no part of that.

  • I don't understand this, can someone please explain how do you perform an "extortion" in glitch? If someone's bothering you, block him and get on with your business.

  • Overreacting much?  But hey, if you want to completely skip out on some game mechanics because of one thing you saw one person do, then go ahead.

I think herb prices will settle back down, but until then, enjoy the show!  Quirky and strange behavior is what makes Glitch interesting.

  • Wouldn't the threats and extortion be against the T&Cs of the game. I wonder what would happen if those individual where repeated reported (not a call to arms, I'm only suggesting they get reported when they commit the offence and only when they commit the offence). There are aspects to the game that not everyone likes, like the tree wars or butterflies in mining areas, but that's just two different playing styles butting heads. The behavior above to me seems like intentional griefing.

That said I haven't had any problems in community herb gardens myself but will be on the look out when I visit one tonight.

  • Bender: From what I understand, this person was staking out the herb gardens and saying, "Unless you pay us 1000c, once you walk away, we're going to grab your herbs." When someone called them out, they threatened that person.

Mithrax: According to a couple of other threads, that person's already been suspended.

  • Good to hear, its always best to let TS deal with the situation and not let it bother you. I personally in a community herb garden with no problems right now.

  • Shiromisa, those things are resolved with the "Block" button. If you don't like what someone is saying, block him. If it happened to me I'd probably threaten them back and leave a couple of "I know where you live" notes at their doors or something. As far as herb "stealing" goes, it's their right to do so. On the other hand, if those people started insulting me, I'd report them.

  • The thing was, you wouldn't block someone you really knew.

  • Are you saying someone made a real-life threat in Glitch?

  • I don't know some people I know would be immediately blocked if I was aware they were playing ;-p

  • Bender (and all), to clarify:
Messy was stealing matured herbs right out from under the grower's nose, THEN tried to extort him or he wouldn't stop doing it, knowing the grower couldn't do anything to prevent the thievery. I was there. Blocking offensive dialogue wouldn't have done a durn thang to keep it from happening.

  • I'm still waiting for the voyeurism part. Did somebody go and peep on a glitch in the shower afterwards or something?

  • I was a bit upset when I first saw the new skills because I knew they would lead to a lot of unpleasantness.

The only reasonable, sane and stress free way to do these skills is to have an agreement with someone who owns a Bog house.  Things can get nasty in the CGs as people strive for herbs.

You cannot buy herb seeds (apart from the Auctions) which makes them rare even for Bog dwellers.  You can buy them at Auction.  You can receive them in the Ancestral Lands but that is hit and miss and you could spend days, weeks or months there getting enough seeds.  You can go to the CGs and take Herbs that are unguarded.  A little sneaky but, hey, those Herbs were "abandoned".  You can go to the CGs and steal from someone who is there tending patches.  They can't stand over every plot and you can probably steal their crop easily enough.  You can pray to Mab and the other Giants that maybe they could possibly rain seeds on you.  Most of these options are unreliable, unlikely or larcenous.

Herbs, seeds, guano and Tinctures are all overpriced in the Auctions.  If anything is reasonably priced, it won't be there long unless it is very common.  I'd like to see a ceiling in the auctions that keeps people from pricing more than a set level above value.  I don't know what that level should be, but no more than 100% I think (Yes, you might disagree, that's OK).  That should cover the value of the item plus the cost of bringing it to auction.

Some Glitches have organized themselves into groups and virtually take over CGs while they grow Herbs in every patch (for eventual high priced sales in the Auctions).  Maybe there should be a limit to how many patches can be planted within a Glitch Day per person.  Other things have daily limits.  This would not hinder you too much but might inconvenience you as you are forced to go to another CG.

I was excited to get the new Skills, loved buying the new tools.  I love the Cauldron and Still!  Thankfully Hooch is easy to make.  I may never use the Cauldron.  The Herb Madness is too much for me.  BTW, I do have friends with Bog homes but I hate to impose on them.  They are, no doubt, busy growing their own herbs.  Maybe I will ask to borrow their gardens later after the excitement dies down and my friends have completed their quests.

I disagree. 2 days ago, I could sell rainbow potions for 4,5k to 6k. And they sold after a few minutes. More people are able to make them now, supply went up (and maybe demand down) and the price is down to 1k. That tells me that the markets work fine.

Potions are new and fancy, wait one or two weeks and the whole herb-drama will end.

  • ^^^That. Anybody remember the 250K 12-sided die? How about unopened Cubimals for 10K? At a certain point the novelty will wear off for a lot of people. Those who are left will be free to garden as they see fit.
Not only that, after a certain period, I'm sure there will be masses of herbs in the AH anyway, so marauding bands of herb-thieves won't have much incentive, since the prices will have been driven down.
