It isn't always Necessary to Agree on Anything, but Disagreeing about Things

Are you familiar with that TV Trope, where two opposing sides are attempting to argue their point into the ground and a neutral party steps in and says "Let's agree to disagree?"

Consider the following:

It is the nature of humans to have opinions and cling to those opinions. I think it is also human nature to -- in defending one of these tightly held opinions -- to attack, or attempt to diminish in some way, the opposing opinion. But, in social situations, it is important to remember there is no ULTIMATE RIGHT nor ULTIMATE WRONG, and in general most issues fall into the gray area of FREEDOM OF CHOICE. Just because one person likes chocolate ice cream and the other person likes strawberry ice cream, does not mean that everyone in the room needs to be behind one or the other. There are hundreds of ice cream flavors and whatever you choose is okay, as long as you acknowledge that others have a choice as well.

Some disagreements call for participants to simple accept the reality of others being free to choose.

More importantly, keep in mind that you cannot judge anyone, until you've walked a mile in his/her shoes.

  • @Mal'akh & Batsgirl -- okay I have a pair of peach canvas Candies with a wicker heel. I bought them to wear at a wedding, but should have gone a size larger. :(

  • Never judge a man until you've walked a mile in their shoes. That way, if they turn out to be a jerk, you're a mile away and you've got their shoes.

  • You're all wrong because I don't agree!  Yeah, that's the ticket!  Though what I was actually thinking was that this probably belongs in Off Topic.
