Tree-pocalypse - Uprising of Wood Trees

Hello, for those of you that don't know me my name is Nerdcore, founder of the group WTF (Wood Trees Forever). I am a self-proclaimed advocator of wood trees everywhere. Today something very frightening happened, which has been something we all could have predicted long ago: the last wood tree in the wild was harvested and cleared. Many new people were affected by this in their quest to discover all the trees in the world, not to mention the psychological strain put on all the trees bred in captivity for the good of the species.

For this reason I have decided to embark on a quest I call Tree-pocalypse, or the reforestation of wood trees in place of some of the more common trees (bean/cherry). I'm just planning on sticking to a certain region rather than making it a world-wide thing. Bean and cherry trees have their place too, of course, which is why I'm planning on focusing on the Aranna area. It's out of the way, but hopefully it'll make a good home for the wood.

I'm not asking for donations; all of the wood beans/tree poison/water are bought with my own hard-earned currants and I'm fine with that. I'm not asking everyone to go out and do the footwork themselves, just hoping that if you run across a wood tree, even if you don't plan on harvesting it, just pet and water it. Everyone knows a mistreated wood will wilt. :/

Also I'd like to promote the education of others on wood trees. I believe that most people just don't know that if they harvest/clear the wood tree then that's it. They're used to all other trees growing back, especially the new players. If someone asks where to find wood, it doesn't take a lot of effort to kindly ask them to pleasure their wood before they take it. If you see a chop-happy Glitch, a kind reminder that wood trees are delicate creatures and asking them to leave some for the next Glitch isn't very hard either.

So if people wouldn't mind tending the wood trees in Aranna and maybe leaving a nice note next to trees every once in a while asking them to respect the wood it would be much appreciated! Thank you Glitchens!

  • I suggest leaving a note by the wood trees:
"After you're done petting your wood, if you finish it off, don't forget to plant your seed"
    or something....lol

  • Can you plant wood trees in places other than three ones mentioned in the wiki. There are 3 (I forget which)

  • Long-term I plan on making Aranna wood-dense. Short term... I'll work on making more. :)

  • Piss off, we don't want your wood, put it somewhere else.  Our zone is small enough as it is, and there isn't even a grocery vendor there.

  • Plant your trees in Aranna, but we're not going to revive them if the rooks come for them. Cycle of life and all...

  • I do my best to keep wood trees I run into above the "harvest and clear" level, hoping that keeps them alive (or at least slows their demise).
    Save the trees!!!

  • @DJ Plaid:
You mean: No thanks, we don't need more woodtrees?

    @ Nerdcore:

  • Not really, thanks though mom.

Anyway, if you want this to be some communal service to people, it should be a little more conveniently located, like maybe a zone with a train station in it?

  • You're welcome, DJ Plaid.

Wood trees die very easily, if they would be placed in areas that have lots of traffic they wouldn't survive a day I think.
For the survival of the wood tree it is better to place them in out of the way streets, so people have to deliberately go to them instead of passing them by chance and clearing them all.

  • I currently have two in captivity and they're doing very well. I am worried that the wood tree is a doomed species in the wild. Its inability to evolve and adapt to survive in its natural environment may well lead to it disappearing again in the not too distant future. I'm still going to do what I can to help with the "re-wilding" and reintroduction to select areas. There is, however, only so much one can do to save a species that doesn't want to be saved.

  • Wood Trees have very little use in game currently.  One or two quests, a single cooking recipe, and some people will want to hang on to one plank so that they can splank people.

You can also eat a plank for 2 whole energy!

There's no reason to clearcut an entire region and plant nothing but wood trees.  A better idea would be to pick 3 or 4 off-the-beaten-path routes around the whole world, and focus on making sure there is always a wood tree there.  I am more than happy to help maintain a few trees spread across the northern mainlands regions, but I will fight to the death for biodiversity in Aranna, at least until they add more uses for planks (building furniture, for example).

Aranna is only "out of the way" for the people who don't live there.

  • Planks are awesome for bat poo.

ETA: That silliness said, I do think it'd be better to pick a few off-the-beaten-path streets around the world so no one has to travel forever to get to (or away from) wood trees. It'd be nice to know there are some streets across the world I could run to get planks in my random travels.

  • Did y'all know that sprinkling Fertilidust on a wood tree before harvesting keeps it from being totally "cleared"? Fertilidust brings em back alive,,,try it....it works.....

    Peace...out.......

  • Way to go, DJ Paul!  And a lot of the detractors will be singing a different tune when projects start up and many many planks are needed for them.  I remember back when the first "tree-pocalypse" was caused by people wiping out trees all over the place in need for planks and wood trees were instituted.  Then people wiped out bean trees and planted wood trees instead, until noone could make awesome stew any more ... and then people wiped out spice trees ... and then ...  hmmm.  Am I seeing a rather sad pattern here?  Balance, Glitchens.  Balance.

  • To be fair, I never planned on wiping out ALL trees in Aranna. I focused on 5 streets and was content with that. As was previously pointed out, I chose a slightly more "remote" location to try and cut down on casual harvesting. I'm not wiping out all trees, don't worry. I just hope that if wood trees are more plentiful people will be less likely to just kill them all.

Tree-pocalypse isn't about genocide, it's about trying to reintroduce the wood tree into its natural habitat through deliberate efforts to find a nurturing environment for them. All trees serve their purpose in Ur and I'm not trying to take away from that. I'm just trying to give wood trees metaphorical legs to stand on like so many other trees have already.

And I'd really like to stress the idea of educating people old and new about the fact that wood trees, once fully harvested, kills them. In my experience killing is done out of ignorance rather than malicious intent.

  • Aranna's a good place for wood trees, because (a) projects will start up there soon and presumably need planks, and (b) I live there and like wood trees.
