  • I realise y'all don't want to squander development time on mere clothing, but I'm with striatic here.

  • if nothing else, way to create out own designs to impose on existing clothing items. Just that would probably keep everyone settled for a very long time.

  • I'm of the opinion that the clothing we currently have is enough. What I do feel should be implemented in future is the ability to purchase clothing (or clothing upgrades) with currants, that are either purely aesthetic (low cost) or give advantages such as a lower rate of energy loss, faster skill learning etc. These should be graduated so that better clothing requires a higher level of purchase.

  • "I'm of the opinion that the clothing we currently have is enough."

do you expect players to be unable to begin the game with, say, a plain white t-shirt?

because i think if you don't allow players to enter the game with a fairly wide selection of "basic" clothing, like different colour options, you're alienating people from their avatars with their very first game experience.

  • let alone the fact that with such limited options at the outset of the game, you're going to have a ton of relatively clone-ish looking n00bs running around .. i'm a bit surprised that anyone would think the present clothing starting options are nearly enough.

  • I agree!
More clothing options are definitely in the works.
And when I say "in the works", I don't mean that, yes, they are on some list somewhere that will be tackled some time. I mean, I switched over from my Adobe Super Avatar Clothing and Accessories Creator CS5 software to type this, then I will go back to the Adobe Super Avatar Clothing and Accessories Creator CS5 software window after I click "Post Reply" to continue working on more Avatar things as you are reading this forum post, taking to heart a lot of the community suggestions in previous avatar threads.

Just a note, the current avatar system is still a very early implementation of the new system. There are a whole lot of new stuff coming up real soon and optimization of existing stuff.

  • I just think that having all the clothes available for you to choose from might not be the best system. I think the possibility of buying clothing in-game, so that the clothes you start with are the clothes you only keep for the first level or so, is a better option. If that is implemented, then yes, a selection of only a few to choose from is 'enough'.

If the clothes you start with are the only clothes you can have for the rest of your playing time then they are not only aren't enough, but they are nowhere near 'enough'. I thought the rest of my post made my opinions slightly clearer, but I apologise if they weren't so clear.
Posted 2 years ago by TGDT Subscriber! | Permalink
  • no, you were clear. i just strongly disagree.

if there are only a meager handful of clothing options at the outset, people will be alienated from
their characters and the characters will all look alike.

meanwhile there is already a ton to learn at the beginning stages of the game to have making currents for clothing yet another thing to add to the list of things to do.

people should be able to make themselves look like.. themselves. immediately. getting people invested in their "character" is important, and you can't really define your character in a unique way if the only possible t-shirt option has a nintendo controller on it, and you can only pick between that and two other shirts styles, with a limited palette of colour options.

  • Viz. Tingly's post, I offer KoL as an example. Can't get much more basic than a stick figure, and players still stick around. (Sorry about the double use of "stick" there...)

  • I agree with everyone (mostly).

We will definitely have lots and lots and lots of options (some for everyone, some for subscribers only and some for individual sale – and in each of those categories, some will be level-locked or achievement-locked).

In the (cash-)free for everyone category, a few will be available at the moment of character creation, but most of them will be purchased for currants or rewards for quests & achievements, etc. A limited selection up-front means there is something of a "newbie uniform" which is actually helpful for everyone.

(Re "looking like yourself": Miis do a pretty good job of that and there the only clothing options are different colors of strangely plastic-looking long sleeve Ts and generic trousers: that's more about the facial features & hair available and the degree to which you can fine-tune them. And in that category, we hope to excel.)

  • "Can't get much more basic than a stick figure, and players still stick around."

KoL is a totally different, far less visual game where you very rarely look at the other players. you can imagine your stick figure being however you'd like it do look, or just dismiss it entirely. can't do that in glitch, where there's nothing generic about the players.

"Re "looking like yourself": Miis do a pretty good job of that and there the only clothing options are different colors of strangely plastic-looking long sleeve Ts and generic trousers"

a problem with Glitch's current clothing selection is that it doesn't grant people generic looking long sleeve Ts and generic trousers.

currently you can't render the clothing visually irrelevant, so the clothing is certainly more prominent than the facial features [tho maybe not more prominent than the hair].

"that's more about the facial features & hair available and the degree to which you can fine-tune them."

miis are different from glitch avatars. with miis you SEE the faces in the game, like in Wii Tennis the camera zooms in and out allowing you to see the features before each round, and you see the players pretty close in slo-mo replay.

in glitch, people bound from place to place really quickly, and the details on the faces are much smaller and sometimes you only get a quick glance at the overall colour scheme of a character as they rush by, let alone notice that their ears are pointy. it's just not the same situation.

  • Even in games where people look at avatars, it's more like a nice extra than something terribly important to stickability. I may put 15 or 20 minutes at most into its look, then hardly think about it. It's up to the game itself to get me to stay. Generic avatars, good game, I devote time. Awesome avatars, good game, I devote the same amount of time. Awesome custom avatars, blah game, I'm out.

  • "Awesome custom avatars, blah game, I'm out."

over 18 million people play Petville and that's pretty much all the 'game' is:

  • Taking that to 'getting people invested in their "character" is important' in Glitch doesn't follow. Having the avatar be the game isn't Glitch, either, unless you're arguing to get rid of streets and skills and such. If the strength of Glitch is the strength of GNE, social interaction is the key, not the ability of your avatar to have a soul patch or kulats.

I looked at Petville's data. Just in the last month, they've lost an eighth of their user base and it's only 8 months old. That's kinda how facebook games go. Big success at first, then the decline, then flatlines for quite awhile, then deleted.

  • "Taking that to 'getting people invested in their "character" is important' in Glitch doesn't follow."

    why not?

"Having the avatar be the game isn't Glitch, either, unless you're arguing to get rid of streets and skills and such."

    i'm not suggesting that.

"If the strength of Glitch is the strength of GNE, social interaction is the key, not the ability of your avatar to have a soul patch or kulats."

    and?

you don't think it is at all useful to get the attention of people who are interested in such games?

absolutely nowhere did i say that glitch shouldn't have a game or social interaction!

merely that people are obviously interested in being *creative* with avatars and houses and if that's part of glitch then it makes sense to be upfront about it and have the game signal to new players "hey! welcome! let's be creative here!" and i don't think a prefunctory selection of avatar clothing customization really says that. instead the game says "hey! welcome! get used to watering plaaa-aaaants!"

games like petville and farmville attracting millions of players has something to do with the ability of players to get creative and decorate and design a little. glitch is a persistent shared world with many potential facets, but there is nothing wrong about creativity/decoration/dress-upwhatever you want to call it being a significant aspect that everyone can participate in from the get-go. especially when they're eventually expecting people to shell out real money for decorative items.

  • The next-to-last paragraph sounds good, so I'll take it, especially since Stoot said there will be "lots and lots and lots of options" a few posts back.
Posted 2 years ago by Tingly Claus Subscriber! | Permalink
  • stoot actually said that: "a few will be available at the moment of character creation, but most of them will be purchased for currants or rewards for quests & achievements, etc." This is definitely a better system than allowing a huge range of choice from the beginning.
Posted 2 years ago by TGDT Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I don't see how it's a *better* system. People can pick a few things quickly either way. Whatever fun a player might get from creating their avatar can be had right away. Having a shorter list can have a cascade of early unlockables. You'd have to flip a coin to figure which is better and it's only a minor issue in the end.

  • Personally, I hate "buying" clothes with any type of currency unless they can be tried on first. Otherwise I end up buying things I won't wear (hmmmm, sound familiar?) and then I have no money to buy more and am left frustrated and unhappily naked. I wouldn't mind a large variety of options from the get-go, and the choice to purchase special clothes later on or earn them or what have you.

    Just a smidgen of input.

  • And as a reply to the Facebook game scenarios... people leave those kind of games when the devs start pushing real money too much and end up making gameplay a lot less enjoyable or even impossible. There has to be a healthy balance between free and charging, otherwise even the most dedicated players may give up.
Posted 2 years ago by Bunyip Subscriber! | Permalink
  • just in the interests of different people will play in different ways (something I would love to see happen with Glitch as with all those Facebook games it's a very defined path & everyone must follow the same one) some people do like fluffing about with the 'how stuff looks' aspect (of themselves, their house etc... never looked at Yoville but isn't that all they do in that game??) and maybe that's a valid area to focus on. Other people don't care so much and want to just play.

I love the idea of Glitch being very open to a huge variety of play options so everyone can do things in their own way. And, to some people that might be making themselves look 'pretty' 'freaky' 'just like me' etc...

Personally, I'd like to see a few more clothing options but I am far more about the running about doing tasks and interacting with other's. And I think a reasonable variety first up (some plain some strange) and then ability to buy other clothes or costumes (think little big planet) in gameplay.

One of the game-functions of ornamental options (such as clothing) is to remove currency/currancy from the system, lest inflation kick the daylights out of game balance. The more things that the game can induce you to spend currants on, the better (mechanically speaking). I don’t know how much a "Never Mind The Bollocks" t-shirt will cost, but for game-design purposes it shouldn't be an inconsequential amount. If one can buy vast wardrobes of optional clothing for very little investment, that keeps designers disproportionately busy working on aspects of the game that make only a tiny difference to overall play. If t-shirts turn out to be over-priced, either the cost will come down or we'll all just decide that we have more important things on which to spend our berries.

  • I don't care if the clothing is overpriced - that's how the gaming world goes. I just would rather have a large variety of overpriced t-shirts than an expensive collection of hardly anything. Options. That's all. :)

  • Just dropped by the forums and saw this conversation — which struck me as amazingly vehement, considering everything. Truth is, people play in different ways: some are interested in customization, others want to collect, others want to socialize etc etc.

With all due respect Striatic, I don't see why it's so important to focus on a single, fairly niche aspect of the game — especially at this point. Indeed, I think it's more important to make sure the broader game is able to capture the attention of players once they're past the "create my avatar" stage, since it's easy to add more items but hard to make a more playable/fun experience inside the game itself. The basics are clearly there for playing with your character's look, and the staff have already said there's plenty more down the pipeline.

Personally, I was pretty OK with my avatar when all I could do was decide the size and knobbliness of its head.

  • I would make one suggestion re: hats. When you select a hat, and decide that you do not want it, could clicking on the 'no hat' option return your avatar to it's previous hairstyle, rather than to having no hair at all?

  • TGDT, the whole customization UI is up for an overhaul, and niceties like that will come then. For now, don't be so wishy-washy.

  • I love my panda hat but I must say that almost immediately I had a vision of myself with an upside-down strawberry hat (the green leaves would make a great brim) and now I can't get it out of my mind. In fact, a whole line of fruit haberdashery would be...oh say it..delicious.
