Using fuel cells to make more fuel cells...seems so counterintuitive. Is it just me?

Not that this is new or anything, but I got to thinking about the contradictive nature of this concept. I understand that currently we use fuel cells to make all of our resources. However, shouldn't we have something else for the fuel cell maker? Why on earth should I spend fuel cells to make more fuel cells? That's like putting gasoline into the gas pump every time I need to fill up my car. Plus, it would help to be not totally dependent on fuel cells if we have alternative energy!!! I know that it's not real life, but whatever!!!

  • It's not like gas refineries work off of magic...

Makes sense to me that machines, even machines that make fuel, need fuel. Since I never saw a wall outlet in Ur yet....

Have you ever considered the power source for pumping oil out of the ground?  Clue:  it's not solar power.

  • I don't know for sure, but I assume gasoline pumps are usually electric powered. And electric power is sometimes (often?) generated by burning combustible fuels like oil. Which gasoline is made from.

Anyway, it's not that weird to me I'm just glad that the fuel required to make fuel cells is fairly low, compared to the requirements for other machine uses.

  • There are more important things to complain about.

  • making 20 fuel cells requires 20 fuel which is 2% of the total fuel output.  That's pretty efficient.

  • I certainly didn't get the impression that lala512 was complaining...

  • I kinda know what you mean lala.  I don't really care about the efficiency thing in a game as in rl, but....why do I need fuel cells to get fuel cells?  If I had fuel cells I wouldn't need fuel cells.  We could use white gas as a fuel, it's combustible..  (ps I think just being curious and talking is a lot different than complaining :)

  • Yes, I know what you mean too, lala215.  I know intellectually it is sensible and reasonable, but somehow it seem "wrong".

I can't think how else it would be done, the machine needs fuel, but it seems odd every time!   Not a complaint in any way, just a comment.

  • I wonder what would happen if _all_ the fuel cells in Ur were exhausted (ignoring the drops from crop plots). How would we create new fuel cells ;)

  • Perhaps someday we can retrofit our machine engines to run on hoochanthol .

  • Maybe the fuel cell maker should run off of Obvious Paninis!  That way, when someone says, "How do I refuel the fuel cell maker?" you can reply, "Paninis, obviously!"

  • @lala512 - It only sounds counterintuitive because you haven't really mastered the unlearning of Unlearning yet...

  • You know, as I typed that there were no outlets, I thought "I'll be there are outlets somewhere, and I just haven't noticed them".

    And so it is...

  • @Carl-YES!

The problem with using fuel cells to make fuel cells is that it's too much like rl!

  • @Rah
if all the fuel cells in Ur were exhausted, you could disassemble and reassemble a fuelmaker and it would have some fuel in it to start with. :)

  • Lol!  I feel that way every time I make fuel cells.  it seems especially silly when I have one cell left and only enough ingredients to make 2 more  :D
