Do you buy Bigger Bags?

This is a no-brainer if you've got currants to burn.  But for those of us who still have to budget our spending, do you find the extra space of Bigger Bags worth the higher cost.  (I figure a Bag costs about 110 per slot and a Bigger Bag a bit more than 130, based on gaining 9 and 15 usable slots, respectively).  Me, I've bought 4 Bags and no Bigger Bags so far - I just can't see coughing up 2000 currants.  I'm very much into the cooking skills, and I love it that all my pots, pans and utensils just fill one bag so I no longer have to pick up each pan to use it and then put it down again when I'm done.

  • Earning currants is not so hard. Try to mine a little and you will save enough to buy some bags.

If you need bags i will gladly buy some for you. Just find me in game. :)

  • I might be a hoarder, so yes, when I was starting out I slowly replaced all but two of my backpack slots with bags and then all the bags for bigger bags and toolboxes. (I think I went bigger bag, toolbox, then the rest of the bigger bags, and another toolbox.)

You might find this thread interesting.

  • initially i bought a couple smaller bags because i couldn't afford the bigger bags, but now i only buy bigger bags and those pesky smaller bags tends to get left on the floor of my house.

good advice from both lilla my and sheepy. mine for money. buy specialty boxes/bags (tools, spice, etc) as well. those are really helpful.

  • I was very fortunate that a very kind older user (older meaning they had been here a while) gave me a few bigger bags early on in the game, so I didn't have to think about this choice (before I met this person I had bought a regular bag or two though)... however, I think had I not gotten that help, I would have stuck with regular Bags, because of the price difference. Of course once you get currants to spend you'll be able to/want to go with bigger bags, but when you're on a budget/new, I think the regular bags work fine. And later when you can afford bigger bags you can give out your regular bags to new users :D It's fun!

  • It depends.

You own a house, so if you're content to drop things there and just stay with cooking rather than acquiring other skills sets, you might find yourself just fine with a toolbox (highly recommended to keep tools and only tools in one slot) and the few small bags that you have.

I'd say buy a bigger bag when your style of play mandates it - when you run out of room walking around Glitch.

For example, if you get involved with projects at all or start picking up other skills, you might find that you really want everything with you as you wander the world, in which case, the bigger bags are incredibly useful.  However, if you're sticking close to home to make things and find that you have plenty of slots when you do wander the world, then by all means, get some larger bags.

  • I got a couple of smaller bags for a little while and saved up for a house. After I got the house, I would slowly buy a bigger bag each time I felt I could afford to part with that many currants (along with a toolbox/spice box/etc). I don't often have a lot of currants, though more as a result of me not specifically trying to get lots of them as I don't need them for much other than bags and ingredients that I can't grow.

I like things organized (perhaps because I'm terrible at it IRL) and have my bags labeled. My inventory has all of the specialty bags/boxes and then enough bigger bags that fill all but 2 slots. My 24-slot cabinet is probably about half full of bigger bags. I've got a bag for cherries, a bag for beans, a bag for each kind of metal (though I don't carry those on me, they're in the cabinet), etc. That way, if I just wanna sit in my house and make fruit or food or something, I have plenty and don't have to look for them. Or if I want to contribute to a project.. maybe someday I'll have the right bag with me to help!

  • There is definitely that balance in the beginning: money vs need vs time. Smaller bags are there to fill the gaps.
Posted 17 months ago by Lord Bacon-o Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Bigger bags were one of the most important things to me when I started playing. I was constantly running out of room. Often I'd have to drop things as a newbie, as I just had nowhere to put them, then of course 5 minutes later I'd need those things and they'd be gone lol
When I got a house, I'd find I'd want things from house when I was at projects or suddenly need something I'd left in house and it was a pain in the backside going all the way home. So bigger bags helped out greatly.

Even now I carry around much more stuff than I ever need in game, but I'd rather do that than spend all my time teleporting back and forth constantly.

  • the only way someone is going to get that money is selling a house and having some extra currants. i am going to need 2000 currants now to get a bigger bag!!! thats going to be hard. unless i level up next test. but i need alot of money to move. not alot really because the money from selling my old house counts as money for the new one.

  • I am a bigger bag addict. I have them in my cupboards, on my floor, in all my backpack slots (except spice rack, alchemy stuff, etc.). But yes, when I started, I used the regular bags until I got the hang of making currants. :)
Posted 17 months ago by RM Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I totally did for mining. It let me carry tons more to sell and made it easier to rack up currants more quickly. I bought one bigger bag first, then two, then about four, and so on until I had... 11? And a spice rack, elemental pouch, and 2 tool boxes. I feel like there's another type of bag I'm forgetting, lol. Oh yeah, I think it was the chemistry one or whatever.

  • this doesn't belong here, but....

i carry almost everything with me (geez -- i'm a bag lady). my personal cooking trick is to cook on the same street as a grocery vendor. then i can quickly purchase anything i might need but don't have.

  • Haha, I second emdot. I carry EVERYTHING with me. The only things I don't carry are the pigs, butterflies, chickens, and trees in my backyard. xD You never know when you might need something quickly! So, it's nice to have bigger bags for that :)

  • I swapped my alchemistry kit out for a bigger bag when I realized I was never carrying around more than two or three compounds. Not worth the space!

  • At this point, I'm all bigger bags & speciality bags (spices, elements, alchemy, 2 toolboxes). When I started, I bought smaller bags until I could afford the bigger ones. It worked for a while, but just about when I was outgrowing them, I was able to afford the bigger ones. I still have a few of those smaller bags holding stuff in my closet, but I've given most of them away to new players.

    My setup looks like this:
1: Basic Resources: Grain, Meat, Milk, Spices, Cherries, Eggs, Bubbles, Gas, Paper, Planks, Jellysac, Metal, Sparkly, Beryl, Dullite (I always make sure to have at least 1 of each here so that it stays organized and things that I pick up go into the next bag)
2: Overflow: this is for any overflow & things I gain on my journey
3: Variable 1: I use this for whatever I'm doing. If I'm mining, I'll fill it with my mining bag. If I'm heading to the swamps it'll be my firefly or herb bag. If I'm out to gift new players, it'll be my gift bag.
4: Variable 2: Same as above
5: Donations: gems & extra music boxes for the shrines
6: Potions & Powders: various powders, herbs, random kindness, piggy bait, etc
7: Music Boxes: the music boxes that I haven't yet played for the crab
    8: Pantry - Produce
    9: Pantry - Groceries
10: Spice Rack: I keep at least one of each spice because I hate when my allspice winds up in here
    11: Element Box
    12: Alchemy Box
13: Food ready to eat: Food that's been prepared
14: Drinks & Keys (keys used to be in my potion bag, but moved here last test. it seems to work as I never filled up my drinks bag all the way)
15: Toolbox with the various hardware & alchemy tools
16: Toolbox with the various kitchen tools, seasoners, & orb

If I'm doing some hardcore mining, I might leave my overflow & pantry bags at home and stock up with some extra empty bags. But otherwise, that's the setup. When my basic resources fill up, I either use them in some manner or put them in storage and take whatever is in the overflow bag and put it in the basic resources bag. It's a bit fiddly, but it keeps me organized.

And wow! I remember back when (about a month ago) when I was desperately trying to save for a bag. Now I've got dozens of the bigger ones. How'd that happen?! Also, I remember thinking the toolboxes were stupid - why spend the money for something that could only hold tools when a bag would be versatile. Now I like that I know exactly where my tools are and that there won't be any random junk in there.

  • Imbri, your setup is along the same train as mine. Hawkwell, the bigger bags are worth it because although you compared price per slot, think more of the qty you'd have to purchase to accomplish maximum storage. When I started out, I only bought small bags. Between harvesting, seeds, and picking up random items, for quests -- I was easily overwhelmed and dropped stuff by my third day. Now, I have bags separated by categories.

I also name my bags accordingly and put items in bags in my cabinet at home. For instance, I don't carry music boxes until I'm ready to sell or send them to a friend. I don't usually carry seeds either and leave them in a seed satchel in my cabinet at home. I do agree that specialty storage (toolbox, spice rack, etc.) is worth it since it is organized and holds much more.

Advice: save for the bigger bag, but if you dint have the money and cant wait, get what you can afford. You can always set up a storage system later or give away bags to newbies when you reach your point of excess (believe me, it will happen to you one day).

  • I have bought several large bags and plan to buy more.  I also bought a Tool Box, a Spice Cabinet (really a box), an Elemental Pouch and an Alchemy Box.  I have found it helpful to dedicate bags to certain things.  One large bag is my Cooking bag and has all of my cooking utensils, my Orb and one or two other items.  I have a bag named "Sell" in which i put items I want to sell.  Sometimes these bags change as things get added or are used.  I also have two bags named "Food".  Bag organization is a never ending process.

  • Lots and lots of bigger bags.
The way I collect, it's well worth it.
Most of what I collect stacks @ 250 per slot so I definitely get better value out of the bigger bag :)

  • I have what feels like dozens of bags all over: on me, in my house, in my cabinet.  Oy.  Bigger bags are a must - that way, you also don't waste money when you upgrade!

But I'm also primarily a miner, so I have about four or fives "mostly empty" bags for mining stuff, or "inboxing" when I'm out wandering.  Then I have a bag for higher-grade gems (moonstones and diamonds, and EHSP) for donating, and a bag for lower-grade gems and extra blox to either sell or donate, depending on what I need.  I also carry Flaming Humbabas with me, as well as my element pouch.

I have my spice rack with me, and what I'm working towards is large/full stacks of various spices, so I don't have to worry about making a ton for projects, then I can also have a full stack or two (or three?) of allspice.

I have a bag for "miscellaneous" stuff that I might pick up but want to hang on to during my wanderings; I have a bag for project stuff that contains kindnesses, metals, powders, jelli, talc, blocks, planks, papers, etc.

I have a bag for ingredients - milk, flour, random sauces and stuff.  I also have a bag for awesome stew ingredients, and I keep my guano here too.  And a bag for awesome stew (which I converted to when they nerfed nono.)

Then I have my fruit bag - again, I'm working towards full stacks of each fruit, plus full stacks of cherries.  Yaaaay projects!

Finally, I have two full bags of tools and similar - my beaker and tube are in there, and so are my firefly jars.  Though I might reorganize those a bit - the ones that break down all in one bag seems like a good idea to me.

That's what I carry on me.  Beyond that, I have stacks of milk and meat at home, I have a bag for gas and bubbles, I have a bag for Earth/Loam/Peat, emblems, extra element pouches, all sorts of random stuff at home.

  • I think the answer is to get a house as soon as you can when game goes public...You can get an apartment for 1000cc... this precludes the need for so many bags. The first time when I started playing in April all I did was buy small bags which I could afford.   Now I know it is better to get a house ASAP and dump stuff there.

@moOneyman...... Mining ROCKS.. sell the gems and get big bucks..Mine but try to get advanced skills  so it goes  fast and get  a fancy pick as soon as you can afford it. Learn tinkering so you fix your own tools.

  • When I first started out, I had bags, because of the price, but these days, I'm all bigger bags.  Currants aren't really an issue, so I've got 11 bigger bags, 2 element boxes, 2 alchemy kits, 1 spice rack

My bag setup is pretty much this:

1: Basics: Teleport scripts, meditation orb, quill, paper, tree antidote, fecundity powders, planks, ingots for crafting, etc
2: Empty/Overflow (For mining or collecting whatever--I usually intend to get rid of these fairly quickly by crushing/smelting/selling)
    3: Empty/Overflow
4: Rocks (Various kinds of ore, mostly sparkly and metal, sometimes dullite, to hang on to a bit longer if my element boxes are full or I have too many ingots or something)
5: Mining Bag (Mining tools--picks, crushers, smelters, earthshakers, humbabas, etc, plus some extra slots to fill with rocks, so I can drink a humbaba and drag & drop to my crushers if necessary)
6: Supplication: EHSP/FHSP and things I intend to donate, like music boxes, gems, ingots, etc
7: Gems: Gems, usually for selling, but sometimes for donating if I've filled up the 'supplication' bag
    8: Element Box
    9:Element Box
    10: Alchemy kit
    11: Alchemy Kit
    12: Spice Rack
13:Tools: All tools that aren't mining tools; tinkertools, kitchen stuff, although I've recently taken to leaving my frying pan/knife &board at home.  I mostly use my awesome pot, and if I need a pan/knife&board on the fly, I can craft one.
14: Food & Drinks : Meals and drinks that have been prepared
15: Ingredients : Raw ingredients like cherries, beans, produce, groceries
    16: Ingredients: ^

I'm actually thinking of reorganizing a bit, I'm not sure I really need that second alchemy kit, I've only used it once or twice, I think.  I do love my spice rack, though.  Maybe I'll replace one alchemy kit with a toolbox?  I guess we'll see when Glitch opens again!  :D

Of course, I do have a house, and my house is a little less organized.  Mostly eggs (for hatching) and such are out by the pigpen, loam, earth and peat lay around near the trees, a few jars of fertilite also near the trees, and guano, seeds and watering can up near the plots.  My cabinet is full up with groceries, produces, gasses, bubbles, and all sorts of stuff that I don't use that much.  Whew~!  I'm such a packrat, but, I kind of love it.  If I could have this kind of bag of holding in real life, I would take my entire house with me all the time.  I'm sure I could narrow down my world to 256 items! :D

  • My inventory:
    Toolbox for tools
Toolbox for kitchen, seasoners, orb and emo bear
    Alchemy kit
    Element boxes
Bags organized at start of test for prepared food, groceries, grain, meat, dairy, barnacles, etc, etc

Some stay in the cabinet. Some travel. It depends on what I'm doing. My cabinet is small so I have piles of raw materials for blocks by my block maker.

1 hr into test cycle curse lots because while I still have neatly organized toolboxes, alchemy kit and element boxes my bags in no way resemble categorized inventory. More like chaos in a bag x 10.

I do etc etc etc very well evidently.

  • Where are the hardware/tool vendors that sell the bigger bags and toolkit? I looked at the glitch wiki, didn't see that info there.

Item locations would be nice to be included in the wiki for an item. What location of the vendors selling the item. :)
Posted 15 months ago by Tibbi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Tibbi, all hardware vendors sell bigger bags and tool boxes.  It's easy to determine where hardware vendors are when you're in-world by opening the map and hovering over vendor icons in nearby streets.  Or you can install this greasemonkey script to find the nearest one automatically.

I'm not surprised that nobody has catalogued the various vendors and the streets they are on.  Or I would be surprised if someone did it.  The world is huge and growing all the time.
Posted 15 months ago by jasbo Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Tibbi, bigger bags are sold by any Hardware Vendor. You just need to scroll.
Posted 15 months ago by Lord Bacon-o Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Tibbi, when you get in game, if you open the map and hover over the currant sign, it will tell you which vendor is located on that street (also works for the shrine icon).   Also if you load in the greasemonkey script for locations, when you open the locations page from the encyclopedia, it will give you an option to filter on all sorts of things to include types of vendors.

And back to the original topic, since this is post reset.  I'm a fan of getting smaller bags initially (2 small bags = 1800 and you get 20 slots, a big bag = 1999 and you only get 16 slots).  However, I only purchase a couple since I know I will eventually want big bags for all my slots. After I get my preferred house, then I start buying bigger bags as I get currants, and use the small ones for storing like items in the cabinet, since we can't sell them.  I also sometimes make up a gift bag with the small ones.

    ETA: jasbo beat me :)

Posted 15 months ago by Tibbi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Well, it can sometimes be a bit confusing because some specialty vendors (e.g. mining vendors in the deeps) can sell a subset of other vendors' stock in trade (earthshaker drinks, picks, tinkertools, etc.) - so, not so silly!  :-)

  • Here's the list for HW vendors in Groddle from the greasemonkey script:

    Groddle Forest
    Groddle Heights
    Groddle Meadow
Posted 15 months ago by ~Pink Flamingo~ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Tibbi, I think you are only seeing the Alakol homes...you need to select the region from the list on the left of the realty pages where you want to purchase a home to see the homes for that region.  There are cheaper houses than 30K.  Apartments in Groddle Meadow, Bortola and some of the new regions go for 1,500.  Smaller homes in Groddle, Bortola, Tamila, Muufo, etc are 4,000 or less. Homes in the firebogs are 3500 - 10K.

I really dislike they took away the ALL list from the real estate because it makes it harder to find the cheaper homes now.
Posted 15 months ago by ~Pink Flamingo~ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I use only bigger bags, and some of the specialty bags. No toolbox though, not worth the extra money to me. My smaller bags got turned into newbie welcome bags last time around, and will probably end up being the same way this time.
Posted 15 months ago by TrentSkunk Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Oh, Tibbi - there are MUCH cheaper houses out there!  If you look at Groddle Meadow, for instance, there are apartments for 1,500 - less than the price of a bigger bag!

The Real Estate page defaults to a search for Alakol homes (first region in the alphabet), which could indeed lead someone to believe that the cheapest home is 30K.  If you look at the left-hand sidebar, you can search various regions individually (I think it used to default to all homes for sale, but again - the world has gotten too big for that).

  • It's funny that last time round Big bags were really essential to my playing. I really couldn't have survived without them. But this time round after the reset, I'm being so much more ruthless with what I carry around with me.
I currently have one small bag (had to get it for a quest I think),  a friend was lovely and gifted me a large green bag and I bought one large bag.
That's all I need right now. The little bag's my tool box (I'm not doing cooking or mining 'till last, so I don't need those tools as yet, so plenty of room for the other things I do need in a small bag) and the 2 big bags are both half empty lol
I'm sure I'll get more in time, once I start hoarding again, but I think at the moment I'm just more focused on currant making, so I'm not getting attached to much of my inventory.
