Join the discussion... herb prices in auction too high, due to sniping, just right?

Have changed the title of this because it has evolved into an interesting forum on what people think.

Here are my new thoughts about the matter:
-I still believe it would be nicer if herb prices fell a little.  However I'd like to make it clear I'm not attacking anyone who sells or buys at high prices. That is totally your decision.  And I understand your motives.
-I still don't think sniping in general is awful, but I do think it's a problem when it comes to herbs.
-I'm surprised that a community which is generally super nice responds kind of nasty to a forum like this.  Kind of supports this: http://www.glitch.com/forum/general/13879/
Sorry to instigate or contribute to this nastiness.

What I originally thought was fair:
Purple- 194 (note: actual selling price less now)
Gandlevery- 250
Hairball- 302
Rookswort- 320
Rubeweed- 280
Silvertongue- 270 (note: actual selling price significantly less now)
yellow crumb- 302  (note: actual selling price significantly less now)

UPDATE: Just to let you all know, I grow all my own herbs in the community gardens.  I have accumulated more of certain types than I could ever use.  So I set out to auction them.  And found snipers and automatic programs were artificially inflating prices to a point which the common glitch can't afford.  Not suggesting, exactly, that common prices are unfair.  Just suggesting that lowering prices a tinsy weensy bit could help everybody partake in the fun that is herbs.
So I will flood the markets with my discounted herbs.  Hopefully I can help keep prices down.

  • I sell herbs all time and as far as I can tell I've never sold to snipers.   When something sells instantly in a hot market I go check the profile of the buyer.  In the case of herbs it has always been someone who just got the skill for tinctures or potions.

In the case of rocks, its usually been someone who has been doing a lot of refining, making and selling EHSP.

  • i have been selling to snipers since i started playing.

if goods sell at auction as soon as you put them up, that's a sniper.

people have been complaining about snipers since before i started playing.

here's the thing: if i don't have sparkly or essence of purple or the latest doll set, that is not a crisis. if i am not rushing through the badges, it is not a crisis.

i keep seeing people who want the most trophies, the most expensive house, and the most money. people get really bent up if someone else is making more money off of goods than they do.

i made a quarter of a million currants today. most of that money came from harvesting trees.

i do not buy powders or potions or foods at auction; i make what i use. i do not sell tools at auction.

occasionally i buy a stack of hairball at auction, but i am mostly a producer of raw goods and not a purchaser of them. i am well aware that snipers are buying my raw materials and reselling higher, and that some purchasers are crafting from my raw materials and selling at added value.

i get rich. the people who buy from me get rich. the purchasers are getting what they want, and if they're not happy with what they're getting, they should not purchase.

people were pretty happy when bog dwellers were at an economic disadvantage. now they have a windfall and we're all supposed to think it's a problem?

it's like all the "cubimals have sucked all the fun out of the game" threads we used to see.

you don't like cubimals? don't buy any. think herbs are too expensive? don't buy them. or grow your own.

    next crisis?

  • The next crisis will be the 'Whatever-is-next-introduced-to-the-game-and-I-want-it-nao!'  crisis.  But we already knew that.  Instant gratification, Fads.  Virtual beanie babies, and people wanting every sticker for their sticker book.  There's a lot of it around.

  • do you remember the old days when there were agonized threads about the horribleness of people selling things at auction at too low a price, and how it was bad for everybody and bad for the economy and won't somebody please think of the newbies?

if i recall correctly, it was a terrible evil to undercut the auction market because people were going to be able to make as big a profit as possible.

not it is a terrible evil to sell as high as the market will bear, because some people are going to make as big a profit as possible.

i find that i am evil on both ends because i do what i have always done: slightly undersell the going rate.

so now underselling the market is a virtue, but before it was evil and stupid?

i just never seem to get it right...

  • I really think we need more "nice" autosellers-snipers on the AH.

I've been autoselling grocery items on the AH for about 3 weeks, 2 weeks now and 1 week a month ago.  Grocery items at a 100% profit margin will sell, except for Sesame Oil.

If you want to test sniping-autoselling - I recommend starting with grocery items.

Also, when I have time - I'll try to find where the sniper's rules are saved in the computer.  I'm happy to share my snipe rules, if I can just find them.

  • I'm with Flask. If it's not one thing, it's another.

  • As long as it's not the other thing, I'm happy

  • I'd rather it was the other thing, so the one thing didn't seem like such a big deal.

  • Prices will fall when more folks get their heads out of their butts and break down and start growing their own herbs.

I've done so, and I've made almost 40k at this point just flipping herbs. It'd be even more if I actually SOLD all of them instead of just selling off my leftovers after making tinctures and shucking about half of them for seed.

No, you definitely do not want the other thing.  The other thing is a real cause for concern.

  • What a thingy thing.  I'm going to thing it so hard.

  • You guys are thinging too hard about this.  There's a group for that.

  • I thing if I was gonna thing about a thing, it would be the other thing, because then I could thing my things without getting sidetracked by other things.

  • Anyway, TS seems to have increased the yield on herbs harvesting. You can stop complaining.
Posted 12 months ago by BTS0x0 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Increased the yield?  What?  When?  To what?
Posted 12 months ago by WalruZ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • At least with Yellow Crumb, I'm getting 3 per harvest instead of 2.
Posted 12 months ago by BTS0x0 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Did you learn advanced croppery recently?  Because that's known to have an effect.
Posted 12 months ago by WalruZ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Nope, I'm still learning Teleportation.
Posted 12 months ago by BTS0x0 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I've always gotten 3 with Yellow Crumb. I thought it had to do with the fact that I had croppery - in another thread the folks who were getting 2 did not have it. Perhaps this has been changed?

  • According to staff, that binder to croppery skills for yield in herb growing has been removed, so I'm not sure if that holds up anymore, although I guess it might have in the past.

    see http://www.glitch.com/forum/bugs/13369/

(the word "was" in the staff reply sure implies removal anyway)

  • sorry double post

  • That would make sense then. I assume if you have Herb2, you get the most out of your harvesting from herbs now.
