Hat / Tip Jar

a hat or jar that a player can drop, most likely using a special drop verb so as not to cede ownership.

other players would interact with the hat/jar by placing currants* into it, but could not pick up the hat themselves.

currants* placed into the hat/jar would be immediately sent to the owner of the hat/jar.

the hat/jar would stay on the ground for no more than 10 minutes at a time. at the end of the timer, the hat/jar would vanish and reappear in its owner's inventory. existing "auction" rules would be used for dealing with full inventories and offline players.

*or, possibly, items.

  • Not sure how I feel about it. Nice idea for an item, but I can see it encouraging beggars to stand around hassling people instead of getting on and earning their own stuff.  I haven't noticed a begging problem so far, but with more and more people playing, it's bound to happen in the future and the hat would be a beggars best friend.

  • to deter begging, the Hat/Jar could cost 50 thousand currants to buy : ]

if it was a big jar labelled "Tips", i think the implication is that whoever is using it should be doing something to earn the tips.

but mostly, if begging using such a tool ever became a serious problem, just nuke the item's currant gathering functionality and allow it to be sold back to vendors for its purchase price.
