Thoughts on the new rare items.

The more I hear about the Rare Item Vendor, the more I'm not sure I like the idea. I think it cheapens our other rare items. In real life, antiques are sought after because they tell a story. Each item has a history; from where it was made to who owned it, why it fell out of favor, and what newfangled contraption or style replaced it. Our strawberry seeds and tree poisons and beta pickles all have a story. They are rare for a reason. They remind us of our glitchy history, of old times and fond memories. These new items don't have any history, they're just manufactured out of thin air to be a currant sink. It's nice to have something for high-level players to work towards, but I don't think I'll ever treasure any fabricated "rare" item more than my GNG block, for example. It's just not the same.

Anybody else feel this way?

  • No!
The ANTIQUE SPIGOT is a callback to the days of gum trees, which don't exist. The item was created, but the gum trees were scrapped because of reasons. But spigots are still awesome, so now we have a spigot!

I shouldn't have to explain the new yeti.

  • I think it can all peacefully coexist. I agree that the appeal of items like the spoiled seeds is different, but that in no way takes away from the whimsy of the new stuff. I mean... come on, a Rube-shaped potato? Love it.

  • I talk to my potato.  Rube has suddenly improved his offers.  Coincidence?  I think not.

  • In time, these will be antiques and all have a story of their own.  All valuable and antique items must have been new at one point.  ;)

    I Love it.

  • +1 Li'll Missy. I don't have enough currants to get any of the current extremely rare items, but I'm getting there! They're still fun to have.

  • I know what you mean Mikella.  I don't have a problem with the new rare items and am excited about them, and I understand what Sororia Rose and Li'll Missy are saying.  But to me these do have a bit of a different feel from the other rare items.  So basically, I'm saying what Georgia said :) (so yeah, there is maybe no point to me repeating what people have said, haha. but I'll throw it out there anyway)

  • my new potato certainly has not the provenance of my funpickle, but it is fun to have.

and it was within my budget.

so tell me how other rare items are cheapened just because i bought an outrageously priced potato?

  • "In real life, antiques are sought after because they tell a story." I disagree. Yes, sometimes people buy them for the history, but most people buy them because they "look good"
Also in real life, sometime people collect things just because they are rare, with no other rhyme or reason. That isn't forcing you to collect them, and you don't miss out on anythng if you don't.

  • I would argue that the new items are great for people who wanted the old ones. No one says you need to buy all the things (though many of us want to try!) But, if you are partial to the old ones and haven't yet gotten all of them, now would be a perfect opportunity for you! There are lots and lots of pickles, GNGs, Tree Poisons, and even several dusty sticks suddenly up for sale by those who do want the new items, and often for much cheaper than you would have found them last week. However, barring any additional economic changes, I would guess their prices will bounce back, rather than being permanently discounted. It has added a really interesting spin on the mundane, ever-inflating 'collectibles' market.

  • I was quite excited to see that we are finally able to purchase the spigots...have seen them in the encyclopedia since late alpha/early first beta...so they have history with me.  I like these better than the standard collectibles of the cubis, etc, and the accidental ones caused by replacement.  Since these are numbered, they feel more like real collectibles...like limited edition Franklin Mint statues, numbered lithographs, collector plates, etc. They weren't billed as rare antiques though...they were billed as rare items...and I liked that if I had the currants, I have been given ample opportunity to get one or more of them in a brilliant three phase roll-out...I didn't get one by being lucky, or happening to have something in my inventory that was discontinued.

  • Hmmm, yes, yes, and no.  Oh, and, yes.  I'm not answering to anything specific though.

I see what everyone is saying and I totally get it!  It all makes sense.

Partly, I agree with Mikella, but mostly I don't know that I care that much.  There is something to be said about small, adorable items--I love them!  Granted, I haven't tried to buy a single one, but I still love them.  Heck, I love beans and tiny berries and all things small.  Ohh, small things make me happy, especially when they are quirky or broken or crooked or scratched or Tiny!!

And, as someone who sells things in real life, antiques and collectibles, I do have an opinion similar to yours, Mikella.  There is a very big difference between Antique, Vintage, Used, Old and Collectible.  But, the biggest factor when selling or buying is, do people like it enough to buy it and will people like it enough to pay a lot for it?  When people collect things I'm disinterested in, like egg cups, I think, well, it is Their money so, whatever, but I don't really get it.  When people put a Mission vase for sale, I'll knock you down to buy it, watch out!!  How much???  Yeah, I don't really care how much...I LOVE it!

So, what I'm saying is, sure, they might not feel the same for some old-time players but they are definitely wanted by a lot of players.  Frankly, if I encounter a loose defective chick cubimal, watch out, I might knock you down to grab it and runnnnnn!!

No, I won't actually knock anyone down...just sayin'

ETA:  Being a non-old-time-player, I don't actually have any connections to what was something and what just became something.  It is all from Glitch which seems to work just fine to make me giddy.

  • I have some thoughts on the new rare items but may not the exact same concerns.  The scarcity of the new rare items are entirely manufactured, I do agree that is somewhat...tacky for lack of a better term.  However as some have mentioned that doesn't stop people from valuing things that are artificially scarce in real life, although the glitch economy doesn't work that similarly.

My big concern is what comes after the rare vendors.  I expect one of maybe three things to happen.

First they could continue to release more rare items through the vendors at some kind of interval.  Depending on how often and how expensive these new rare items are this would have a huge impact on the value of any and all rare items.  If the market gets over saturated with rare items the values on all of them would probably drop and rise much slower over time as the rare item gets older and fewer are in circulation.

Second this could be a precursor to a major planned change in the Glitch economy.  The total value of the rare items for offer is around 2.4 billion currants, all those currants just completely left the economy forever.  This would be a great time for TS to balance the Glitch economy by evening out currant faucets vs currant sinks.  The economy could be balanced by choosing option one and just using regular rare items to remove currants from the economy but that feels like a pretty sloppy way to do it.  Not to say there shouldn't be rare items but not at the expense of a reasonable economy.

Third this could just be an experiment and they don't really do anything different afterwards.  As is I don't think the new rare items have a long term impact on current collectibles.  Currently a lot of valuable items are on the market cheaper in order for some to afford the new rare items but I think it's just a momentary change that will return to normal shortly.  I'd guess that even the 2.4 billion currants removed from the economy will have it's impact significantly mitigated because of how much more people have been playing to make up for all the currants they just spent.

All in all I would recommend anyone invest in new and old scarce collectibles now as I only see their prices going up.  That is unless TS flood the market with millions of new collectibles, but then, does that sound like a game you want to be playing anyways?

I guess that might be a bit more than 2c but there you have it.

  • Yeah... I had just over 500k in currants and goods I was happy to offload, so I bought a potato. I decided to play for currants   and put in more effort on playing Glitch than I have been recently.   I now also have a spigot and another 400k. So I'm now left with more currants than I had before, plus 2 rare items.

  • Hey, I helped smuggle those items into Ur on those smuggler quests!  They have plenty of history.

Also, with more players trickling in the ratio of rare items per Glitch gets more and more severe.  Adding in some other limited items from time to time is fine and gives other players a chance to get items directly.  I think they add to the fun.

  • Mikella, I definitely agree with you that the new rare items lack the associated history that gives many of the other rares a specially significance. But I don't agree that it's a bad idea or cheapens the other rares. Actually, the 3 dolls, which I have never heard anyone complain about, have even less "glitchiness" about them than any of the new items. I have gladly bought all the new items that I could afford. I'll be interested to see how much they increase in value over time. But they will never mean as much to me as my GNG or my pickle!

I've seen a lot of GNGs for sale since the new rares came out - presumably to raise cash to purchase the new items. I hope those sellers are after-Beta glitchen who just bought their GNGs as a collectible item. It would be sad to think that Beta players would give up their GNG, with all it's beautiful meaning, just to be able to buy one of the new instant rarities.

  • Who cares what people decide to sell or buy? It's their money, and Glitch is just a video game.

As a mechanic, I think the rare items are great as a cuoin sink. Lots of players have a lot of money sitting around and have no idea what to do with it. This helps get cuoins out of the game, and I think it's good in helping prevent inflation. And I think it gives some people more things to do in trading/buying these new items. If you don't like them, I think you can just not play.
