I spun 100 Gameshow wheels... for science!

I have been holding on to my Gameshow Tickets for a few months now so that I could do an experiment like this, and now I am sharing my results with you!

I had 100 Gameshow Tickets. I spun all of them at max mood (winking smiley face). The first 50 were a control group, and the second 50 was done after munching Rubweed. (I had to munch 2 sprigs to get through the lot.)

Control Group:

  • bean - 10 @ 1 = 10
  • 5 c - 12 @ 5 = 60
  • 25 c - 8 @ 25 = 200
  • DG-4 - 7 @ 600 = 4200
  • XS-1 - 4 @ 400 = 1600
  • BB-3 - 4 @ 500 = 2000
  • gameshow ticket - 2 @ 0 = 0
  • 100c - 1 @ 100 = 100
  • DR-5 - 1 @ 700 = 700
  • XS-2 - 1 @ 400 = 400

    Control Group Total = 9,270

    On Rubeweed:
  • XS-1 - 12 @ 400 = 4800
  • 25c - 8 @ 25 = 200
  • 5c - 7 @ 5 = 35
  • DG-4 - 5 @ 600 = 3000
  • gameshow ticket - 4 @ 0 = 0
  • BB-3 - 4 @ 500 = 2000
  • bean - 4 @ 1 = 4
  • 100c - 3 @ 100 = 300
  • DR-5 - 2 @ 700 = 1400
  • cubinal box (crab) - 1 @ 5000 = 5000

    Rubeweed Total = 16,739

(False) Conclusion: Rubeweed makes a difference! It was extremely worth the cost of the Rubeweed to get the more/better music boxes, even having to use 2 sprigs.

EDITED: Glum Pudding confirmed that Rubeweed only effects random drops while harvesting, so while my results *appear* to indicate that Rubeweed improved my Gameshow yields, it was just random luck. Interesting!

    Combined all 100 spins:
  • 5 c - 19 @ 5 = 95
  • 25 c - 16 @ 25 = 400
  • XS-1 - 16 @ 400 = 6400
  • bean - 14 @ 1 = 14
  • DG-4 - 13 @ 600 = 7800
  • BB-3 - 8 @ 500 = 4000
  • gameshow ticket - 6 @ 0 = 0
  • 100c - 3 @ 100 = 300
  • DR-5 - 3 @ 700 = 2100
  • XS-2 - 1 @ 400 = 400
  • cubimal box (crab) - 1 @ 5000 = 5000

    Total over 100 spins = 26,509

Average per spin = 265 (215 if you remove the cubimal as an outlier)

    • Would rubeweedpotion work better, or would it just summon The Rube?

    • Fantastic, by the way. I have a giant pile at home that i havent bothered to use since i just get crap.

    • Nice!
I've been hoarding them for a while, almost have a screen full of them.
I was just going to set them all off in one place to see if it was possible, didn't think about collecting the results or trying to see if anything gives better results.

    • @Sveur, it would just summon the rube.

    • have you ever spun a gameshow wheel... on *rubeweed*?

seriously, interesting results, but is this a big enough sample size to be statistically significant?

    • I updated the original post with the street values for the items. The Rubeweed group was worth 7,269 more than the control group.

    • Interesting.
      I have 45-ish tickets.

    • I checked with staff, and was told that rubeweed just makes a random bonus a bit more likely when you are harvesting something.

    • Interesting! Katlazam was right to question the sample size... even though it looks like the Rubeweed did something, Glum Pudding checked and found out that Rubeweed doesn't effect Gameshow spins.

I guess you should look at the 100 spins combined, then.

    • For real?  Rubeweed is all in my mind?  A 76% improvement by chance?  I dunno.  If I was wrong, Knitomaton, I owe you a big apology for messing up your experiment!  IOU 100 gameshow tickets!

      *turns pockets inside out

Okay, I have two.  Gimme a week and you can run your experiment again!

    • Well, the thing that REALLY put the rubeweed set over the edge was the cubimal box. Say that spin had come up a bean. Then we are looking at 9,470 to 11,740... which would be well within any margin of error.

    • So with the cubimal in there, the average value per spin is 265. However, if we call it an outlier and take it out, the average value per spin is 215, which is still a lot better than I would have guessed.

    • Funny, I find that I tend to get bigger drops on Rubeweed also.  Found it rarely helps me with harvesting, but often helps me with the spinning wheel.  Won't be the first time the devs intended something for one thing, but it helped with other things as well...

I believe for a completely statistically valid test you usually use at least a 100 samples (though I seem to remember it actually depends on the statistical test).  Feel the results here are at least significant even if not completely 'statistically significant' in the strictest sense of the phrase.

Though if you 'throw out' the cubimal box...your improvement on Rubeweed would only be 25%, but still...probably worth the two sprigs...does anyone care to run a second experiment to see if they get similar results?  Would love to see if the beneficial affects of Rubeweed on wheel spinning is truly all in my head...this experiment hasn't convinced me otherwise...I still say Rubeweed helps even if the devs didn't plan it...

    • You have to do a statistical analysis to prove if something is statistically significant. There's no 'strictest' sense of the phrase, just whether or not the test results fall above or below the confidence interval.

Seems like the rubeweed improvement was a fluke, it'd be interesting to see if that happened again in another experiment.

    • this makes me want to start collecting my tickets now too. I've been getting tons of them lately. Like from chickens and gardening and so on.... I rarely give to the giants haha but I've got about 30 laying in the floor at the moment. When I get to 100 I'll spin for science also!

    • With these results, there is no reason to think rubeweed has an effect. If you look at the number of occurances and not the total value, they are really very similar. (The biggest difference is with the XS-1, but getting 4 or 12 out of 50 is not that unlikely if the probability is 16/100.) I think it makes more sense to look at the count than the value when assessing probabilities.

Digging to the back of my mind for statistics class many years ago, I did a "chi squared test". (Numbers are here if anyone cares.) Let's say the full 100 tries is an good approximation of the probability of each item. Getting a sample that looks like the control group or the rubeweed group could very well happen by chance -- with 80% probability in fact. If that number was very low (like <5%), we would say most likely the samples came from different probability distributions.

2x50 tries is very little if you want to do statistics. A bigger sample would give much better statistics. If each group was 85 instead of 50 and they were "as different" as these, there would be only a 5% chance that it was a coincidence.

    • Does anyone know it your mood effects the outcome yet? I wouldn't think so since I still get beans and 5c spins at 100% but has anyone thought about that?

    • A minor methodological quibble:  I think it's wrong to assign a 0 currant value to getting another gameshow ticket.  Your 94 spins (that didn't produce a second ticket) netted you prizes with a value of 26,509.  That's 282 currants per spin; so you could give a ticket a value of 282.  Alternatively, you could spin any tickets you win and include them in the sample.  After all, the prize from  a won ticket is, in effect, the prize of the original ticket.  Either way I think you would agree that, economically speaking, winning a gameshow ticket is definietely not the same as winning nothing at all!

    • I just did my 42 tickets on rubeweed. Fun!

      Average 229 currants
      17 musicboxes:
      BB-3 - 5
      DG-4 - 4
      DR-5 - 2
      XS-1 - 4
      XS-2 - 2

And some beans and some currants.

      I think I won more.

    • How long did it take you to do this?
Posted 10 months ago by FTW BACON!! Subscriber! | Permalink
    • It took about 3 months to save up all the tickets, and then it probably took 20 minutes to go through and spin the wheel for each ticket.

    • having such an example I have got till this moment about 70 tickets. 30 more and I also will experiment. ))))

    • After saving tickets for a couple months, I did the same experiment with 192 tickets (12 big bags full). The results are:

      plover.net/~agarvin/set1-96...
      plover.net/~agarvin/set2-96...

The results of the two tests were pretty similar, except i got two cubimal boxes while under-the-influence (of rubeweed).
