Comme il faut

I would like to ask the Alpha and Beta players, as well as any TS staff, how much Glitch has diverged from what it was envisioned to be. Having only been playing for almost two months, and having only a few rare interactions with TS Staff, I can't really say I know the original vision for Gltich so I do not know if everything is as it should be.

EDIT (for clarity): I am referring to the way the community and culture is evolving.

  • It is still missing a lot of things that are promised - it is too soon for this type of judgement.

    Edited my post for clarity.

  • I didn't need the clarity.

I am seeing what you mean, the launch has changed some things, as forewarned by the person who did a review of glitch on his wordpress blog.

  • I've only been a beta tester for a few months, so I don't feel like I can answer your question. But I would like to share my opinion anyway :)

I think that whenever you introduce many new people to a community, the community as a whole needs to find their balance again. And that's not neccesarily the old balance. Like in real life, community and culture in Glitch are always changing. And the official launch must have been quite a handful. Just imagine something like that happening in real life... You're living in a small town, you and your neighbours share a history and agree about what's right and wrong. Then suddenly: new people all over the place! With different opinions about right and wrong! Oh noes!

I'm just saying that the changing community and culture is inevitable. Not only arrive new players every day, the game itself changes too (just take a look at the change log). There are even subcultures emerging... just take a look at the discussions about pro/con cooporative mining in general or pro/con coordinated mining in Ajaya Bliss/ Neva Neva. The arrival of mischievious Glitches, putting butterflies in the mines, killing trees for fun...

I think when you create a game like this you can envision all you want, but it's bound to go live its own life. Take for instance foodwriting in Plexus, I once read that wasn't by design. But the players soon discovered that dropped items kept in place, so they went ahead and started creating their own art.

You can't control community and culture. Unless you take away the player's freedom and punish them for everything you don't like... I think we can all think of a real life example. Instead, here's how I think it would look like in Glitch ;)

"GOD: What's that? No thank you after that player gave you a Sammich? BAM!"
"God took the Sammich and eated it. You loose 1 Sammich."

  • One of the things I love about Glitch is the lack of punishment for wrong decisions. You failed to succeed but you get to try again.

  • Personally, I don't think it's changed massively.

But then I was always rather a solo player and never got into Global Chat - so I don't miss the smaller community feel.

My behaviour has changed,  I am more social now, because I've known some  people for a longer time, perhaps.  Or because we can play all the time.

  • Hasn't changed all that much to me. Gets more crowded at times, but mostly when I'm about to head to bed, so Yay for not being in a North American time zone I guess :D
Sure it felt like everyone knew everyone else back in Beta, but that's not necessarily a good thing.  More people playing now means more friends as well as a few more people we learn to avoid in game o_o  It keeps things interesting. If it was the same bunch of people all the time, it would get stale very fast. As much as I love my Beta friends, I've met some pretty amazing non-beta people too.

I do miss EotW parties though.  Especially seeing the devs interacting by attending those parties and generally being awesome by being one of the crowd. I still see a few around, but there are a lot of devs who I used to see all over the place who are so busy working now that I just don't see them at all. Which is kind of sad. I just hope they're still able to enjoy the game as well as work on it.
Part of what got me so into Glitch was seeing how different it was from other games. A lot of this was due to the fact that the devs would regularly interact with the users, they'd not be up there on a shiny pedestal and unreachable, but they'd be regular players with just a bit of extra awesomeness added.

I still love the game though and I'm still very very addicted :)  I'm starting to miss that "Sorry We're Closed" sign, as trying to fit in a real life around Glitch is getting awkward! lol xD
However, knowing the site's open all the time means that I'm getting to play in a relaxed mode which is lovely. Beta was very frantic for me. Trying to do as much as possible in an unknown time frame. Whenever I found the site open, I'd stop reality and frantically play as much Glitch as possible. Now, I'm a little more balanced... just a little though o_o

  • I don't necessarily think (though correct me if I'm wrong, Mal) that Mal'akh was asking if the atmosphere in the game has changed so much as asking if it's turned out to be, post-launch, what we thought it would be. i.e., did our expectations pan out, or has it diverged quite a bit as things have developed (whether good, bad, or neutral)?

I've actually been pleasantly surprised at how well the game has maintained the general vibe that it had during beta. It's the same game, essentially, there's just more to do and more people to do it with. I, like Ebiler, miss seeing the devs around as much as I used to, but it doesn't reduce my enjoyment of the game. More players means more imagination powering the world or Ur.

  • The promised stuff is coming as long as they remain feasible. They have to go slow and careful with some things. The door keys, for instance, seem alright when first introduced, but immediately a problem with the door knock was found. Unlike in Alpha and Beta (I was an early Beta tester), they simply can't shut things down and do a deep test and debug for new features.

  • I don't think it has changed that much.  I started in March at the end of Alpha.  Most of the changes I have seen are pretty much what I expected as so many more people began to play.  There have been additions and updates, all expected.  The Devs are not newbs, they are well aware of what to expect though I suppose that even they have had some surprises.  I believe that they have some long range plans and I look forward to seeing what develops.
