"Art Shelves" please! (Invisible and Shadowless)

People are creative, as evidenced by this art work and a national flag design (thanks Lemo!).  It would be so much easier to create cool 2 dimensional art work if the shelves were invisible and shadowless.

Please make shelves that you can put stuff on that will blend invisibly into the wallpaper.  This goes a long way to making player designed art a reality , in a relatively simple way.  This should be free for at least one wallpaper, such as the light blue stucco in Fae's example.

The only tricky part is making the shelves visible enough to put things on in the first place.  Perhaps a slight outline in decoration mode, but not in regular mode?  I dunno, I'm just an ideas man.

ETA: You can stage everything with a different backround where the shelves are visible (like a dark background give the light blue stucco example), then switch to the stealth background when you're done. Yup.

  • I totally support this idea.
    Here is the flag.

  • The only thing stopping us from doing this RIGHT NOW is the "being able to see them in deco mode" part. We're not set up for that right now, but I bet we can think of something …

  • For example, invisible shelves? Would work on all backgrounds.

    +1

(Also just saw Stoot's post, how about shelves that alternate between visible invisible? Or dark and invisible? Would be clearly visible in Decorate mode (as in like.... translucent or you can see the outline) and invisible in normal view?)

  • Yes, lol I suppose invisible IS invisble. But maybe the surface can match the wallpaper color exactly, and then just do away with the shading. So it'd only work with one wallpaper, but it's better than nothing.

As for the deco mode part...the workaround is to work with a separate background during art creation that would be in contrast to the shelf's surface color (so that they are visible). When done, switch the wallpaper color to go into stealth mode. As long as both are free, it's all good.

    And boom goes the dynamite!

  • I think we'd be better off with an adhesive; then we don't have to figure out how to make shelves not-always-visible, and just apply adhesive to an item and stick it wherever we want.  Adhesive would remain until "removed", and the item just stays wherever it's placed, regardless of vertical positioning.

  • Or anti-grav powder to make objects float^^

  • Anti-gravity would be awesome...like Plexus!

The only downside would be potential theft and griefing, especially in our showcase towers.

If the change log is true, and shelves are treated as furniture, then shelf-based art could be somewhat grief-proof, in that items placed on furniture can't be removed. Maybe.

  • Nice, love this little simple things that can create a lot of fun :D like the little bugs! I still miss that wall bug in the cavern houses. link

  • Another thing that makes sheer decoration difficult is depth stacking.  My tower has a shrine in the lobby, and each time I go in and out of the tower, the items have shifted their z-order.

I put a shelf behind a counter, because I wanted all the icons on the shelf slightly below the counter, since they tend to "float" slightly above the shelf.  I put decorations such as drinks and flowers on the cabinet.  I keep finding that one of the icons has landed on the cabinet, and several of the decorations have fallen onto the shelf, even though they were just where I wanted them the last time I was in decoration mode.  If interior decorating and art is going to be a major focus of the game, then a much better interface, with much better control (and grids) is going to be necessary.

  • oh Giants, let me help you: visible out of decor mode - false; visible in decor mode - true! now you only have to code the invisibility thing lol

  • yes - agree with all the above - esp what kha khonsu added above ;)
it would be great to fix the stuffs ;)

  • Z-layering is still haphazard, as is the random order that things appear in for selection when blue-outlined. I have tried and tried and cannot figure out why my lined-up icons appear in a different order every time I have to select among them for an action.

    Why, Giants, why?

  • I would love some sort of craftable glue. Perhaps flour + a water cup?

  • Invisible shelves yes please, also narrow versions so we can work in finer detail(eg with spices) the ability to join shelves into longer lengths would also be helpful and if we could have the option that placed items did not stack, well that would be postitvely awesome :D

oh and a green gem and one that is like maybe an eye?

  • Why not just make the shelf have a highlighted edge during deco mode (like when you are walking in front of a usable item)? Invisible shelves are "clearly needed" (sorry).

  • Some issues I have found doing shelf art:
    1. So much of my wall is wasted at the bottom. that is at least enough room for one shelf, possibly two.
    2. Once I get my shelves set up and with my ocd that takes ages getting them aligned perfectly by placing them left to right - top to bottom to make it look like a smooth surface. If once you are in the process of placing items you mistakenly touch a shelf you then have to go back and touch each shelf to make them align properly again. Please consider a 'permanent placement option' that is changeable. ie: you open the decorate mode and place the shelf. it then gives you the option to permanently attach the shelf until you choose to release it. In this way we can decorate without the horror (and yes HORROR) of touching a shelf.
    3. I am constantly loosing things in the overlaps. not sure how this could be fixed, but please give it some thought.

    thanks
