What's your favorite scary movie?

No, answering this question won't end with Ghostface bursting through your door. I just LOVE horror films, haha. I think my favorite has to be a tie between the series of Nightmare on Elm Street films and The Grudge. I also have to acknowledge that The Strangers truly puts fear into my heart, and that Insidious has been the greatest horror film I've seen this year. :D

  • The scariest movies ever all require that you have been a kid during the 70's;

    Trilogy of Terror
    Crowhaven Farm
    The Haunting (1963 version)
    Bad Ronald
The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane
    The Birds
    Psycho

  • That's not true! Though I was born smack-dab in the middle of the 80s, I appreciate the classics, as well. Psycho is definitely a great one, as is The Birds. I do love Hitchcock.

But you can't deny that there are a FEW gems in more current generations! Have you seen The Strangers? I can't sit through it without getting extremely uncomfortable and taking lots of breaks.

In the foreign genre, I do like Inside, as well.

  • Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead is by far the best horror movie ever made. The Last Exorcism is also a horror I enjoyed.

  • I prefer the psychological thrillers:
    "The Haunting" (1963)
"The Other"  - Not "The Others" which is also very good.
"The Uninvited" - Love this oldie starring Ray Milland and Ruth Hussey.
"The Innocents" - Starring Deborah Kerr
"The House on a Haunted Hill" - 50s/60s version
    "The Old Dark House"
All of those Vincent Price films especially the Dr. Phibes series.
"The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" - Starring Rex Harrison and Gene Tierney.  Not scary but so good, a tearjerker!
"The Fearless Vampire Killers" - Hilarious & creepy, starring Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate

  • Do these qualify as knee-knockers?
The Blair Witch Project....of course the second viewing turned into a count all the *F* words project :o)
    Alien
    Pitch Black
    Jurassic Park
    Silent Hill
    The Village
    The Ring

    As a child these classics made me sleep with the light on;
The Creature From the Black Lagoon
    The Blob
    The Mummy
    The Werewolf

  • I *love* this thread, haha. It gives me a good list of movies to hunt up. I second Poney Tails first list, loved all of those. Strangely, I didn't think Psycho was scary..maybe because it got so much hype before I saw it. I like the psychological thrillers best, and the scariest of all to me are virus related (desease outbreaks) and post-apocalype movies, Resident Evil etc.

Movies I watch over & over--Cloverfield, Imposter, 30 Days of Night, are some.
The Excorcist was really creepy, but ugly creepy. I don't watch devil related movies anymore, just to disturbing. And I don't like the ones that are sadistic, like Saw. Thats just to much like reality.

Edit: Add most Japanese horror movies, like Grudge! I'd better stop now, to many to list, lol

  • Not much to add except:

    HOLY CRAP PHOEBE SPRINGBACK

Saw is too much like reality? What insanely terrifying reality do you live in? Is your life like Saw every day? Or just on the weekends?
Posted 19 months ago by wurzel Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Lol wruzel. Check the news. And consider that every serial killer looks like your nice next door neighbor. haha, getting to dark. Its just that there exist people who can act like that, when they get the chance. Admitedly, I didn't see Saw, just the previews.
But then, we really do have desease outbreaks sometimes, like ebola. Doesn't stop me from enjoying the movies.

  • John Carpenter's The Thing
    Rosemary's Baby
    Alien

The recent version of The Mist is greatly under rated. I recommend renting the black & white version. (Actually I recommending watching both. It is very interesting how color can change an experience so greatly.)

Although that hospital scene in Exorcist III was pure genius.

  • All fun!  I don't like slasher movies but enjoy almost ever other scary film.  Here are 3 oldies from my childhood that gave me nightmares:

"I Married A Monster From Outer Space", 1958 - maybe this is why I never married
"Day of the Triffids", 1962 - I am still suspicious of some plants.  I am convinced there are Triffids in my flower bed, I have done everything to kill them and they keep coming back.
"Five Million Years To Earth" or "Quartermass & The Pit" (original title), 1967 - Great scary alien invasion movie.  It also intrigued me.  What if this really happened?
Posted 19 months ago by Brib Annie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Well, if by favorite you mean the ones that are the most horrific. Saw definitely Saw (all of them)

Stephen King - Cujo, It, The Stand, Storm of the Century, Desperation, The Shining, hell just say most of them... very fav Maximum Overdrive.

  • Great topic. I will have to look for some of these I haven't seen.
Here is an ancient one that terrified me as a kid in the 70's:
Don't be afraid of the dark.

I don't know if it would still be scary to me today, and I think it might be hard to find.

  • @Aegis. I looked for Don't be afraid of the dark at Netflix, & they only have the remake, but did mention the 1973 movie was "made for tv." But YouTube has lots of vids if you want to revisit. I remembered it when it said Kim Darby, that was a great movie, especially the end.

  • Back in the early 70's, I was watching a movie called (I think this is the name of it) "She Waits" in my brand new house.
It was a very beautiful day outside and so I had all of my windows open.
In the movie, during a spooky part, a door slams...at the exact same time one of my rl doors slammed.
Even tho I know it was a draft caused by my windows being open that slammed my door shut...I have yet to ever finish watching that movie and probably never will coz it freaked me out so much. :D :D :P

  • There's a film I saw when I was younger that scared me silly, I may have been eight, or ten, I couldn't tell you now. I don't know what the heck I was doing downstairs with the tv on when my parents were sleeping, but, evidently, I had somehow managed to slip past them.

The stupid thing is, I have not met a single person who has seen this film, or even heard of it. It took me years to track down the title- I couldn't remember anything except a few very freaky scenes, and the fact that it took place in an abandoned brothel.

I'm glad I finally found it online- I was beginning to think I'd imagined it, and I don't think I want to have that kind of imagination.

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heart...

Nowadays I just enjoy tricking one particular acquaintance into going to see horror films with me. I end up having to tell her when she can climb out from under the cinema seat :P "Can I look now???"

  • Omg, I love you all, lol.

Phoebe Springback, I totally get what you're saying about the movies being too much like reality. Most horror movies (including psychological thrillers) have some basis in factual events, including Nightmare on Elm Street, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Silence of The Lambs, Hostel, etc. Some of the events that inspired The Strangers is one of the reasons that movie is absolutely terrifying to me. And I'm glad someone else appreciates Cloverfield! J.J. Abrams is brilliant. I'm SUPER excited about SUPER 8!

Lord Bacon-O, I used to call my sister Rosemary's Baby, lmao. Among other things. ;)  And I really enjoyed The Mist. Marcia Gay Harden was incredible and she really got under my skin. You can bet I was really happy about a certain moment with her in the movie, lmao. I've yet to see the original but I do think a compare/contrast double feature would be really cool.

I'll come back to respond to everyone else. :D

  • Sadly, one of the scariest movies I've ever seen may not have had much of a release or get one. It was a film short hubby and I saw at the Austin Heart of Film festival called The Silvergleam Whistle. It's about this train haunted by a demon man and his little old mother who lures him victims by running a...deserted cabin...in the woods...in the middle of nowhere (shiver). And here's the best bit: The old woman who played the mother is the same person who as a little girl played the main role in The Bad Seed, which is one of the funniest little campy good-n-evil horror movies, well worth watching. Apparently, they thought of using her and called her up, and she was thrilled to be asked to be involved. How cool is that?

Ooh, another fun one, which is more funny than strictly scary but still great, from the same film festival, is called The Monster Hunter (was done as Natural Selection first, 1999). It's about two serial killers who are actually hunting each other, and Stephen Root has a nice side role, as does David Carradine. You CAN find that one on Netflix. hehehee

  • Not too much into horror films. However, the old 50's classics like The Blob and Them (giant ants) are great to watch and sort of even a bit funny nowadays. Reality is much scarier to me than any movie these days but the last movie I remember being scared while watching was the sequel to Silence of the Lambs. Anthony Hopkins is darling but I wouldn't want to be invited to dinner with him :)

  • I really like the movies that give me a chill when I watch them... some of them have moments even though they may be really pooptastic movies in general...

    some of my favorites are:

cloverfield - (i'm with you guys on this one it creeped me out watching it, it was so how godzilla really would have happened)

blair witch project - the first time i watched it i was so creeped out, especially sinced the scifi channel was playing it up as a real story it was really a fun time in movie marketing

paranormal activity - good wholesome scariness

final destination - king of the elaborate death scene movies

skyline - ok the majority of the movie sucked but the quasi-realistic perpetual victim feeling you get watching the movie kept me on edge the whole time

thirteen ghosts - tony shaloub is awesome and the story was really unique

the ring - really got me to appreciate foreign horror films as its own genre
Posted 19 months ago by otter Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I can't *wait* to see Skyline! The previews are brilliant. Its in my Netflix queue. I always thought sending out that probe was reckless, lol.

i've been wracking my brain, trying to remember the name of a movie I saw a few years ago. I've searched internet for it, with no luck. I hope someone here has seen it. It was probably the most horrifying movie I've ever seen.
The plot is, a biological weapon has been exploded in a city. Citizens are told to seal themselves up in their houses--tape all windows and doors, to keep out the contagion. Of course, some people are caught out in the open, can't get home in time. The hero's wife is out there somewhere, and he tries to find her. he finally does, but she in already infected. His delimma, does he bring her into the house, or not? He also has the responsibility to protect a neighbor who took shelter with him. The end of the movie is one of the most painful scenes ever, and the memory still makes me cringe.

  • One of the best was Halloween.
Jamie Lee Curtis in the hospital trying to get away from Michael. OMG! Heart pounding, edge of seat stuff.

Nightmare on Elm Street was another good one.
And I loved the Final Destination trilogy.

Brib, I agree, those are all classics in the "cult classic" sense. Vincent Price was amazing! Haha.

And strcat, I do remember Poultrygeist! But I was never too interested, lol, so I never saw it. Ron Jeremy really turns me off in all senses of the word, ahaha.

  • Hmm.
Favorite series for sheer scary/weird/awesome visuals and concept: The Hellraiser movies.
If I had the cash, I'd buy one of the really detailed reproductions of the boxes.
Second Favorite has to be the Alien movies. Visually brilliant, and scary, and tickles my sci-fi needs nicely.

Scary movie I wish I hadn't watched: The Grudge.
That movie was a problem for me due to the fact that really long hair is actually one of my big turn-on triggers, so it messed with something I like in a way that made it very nightmare inducing.

    Others:
I liked the first two or three Final Destination movies. Now they are wearing it out. Bleh.

Loved the most recent Scream movie and all that preceded it. I'd go watch two or three more if they kept the quality up.

1408 was excellent overall. Admittedly, I'd go pay to watch Samuel L. Jackson sweep a subway platform, but this one was genuinely scary and visually compelling.

There are quite a few more good titles I can't think of at the moment, so I may put another post on this topic later.

I'm not sure Super 8 will be a true Horror movie in my book, but it is something I'm SUPER excited to go see.

  • Phoebe Springback, I forgot to ask, so, have you not seen Drag Me to Hell or Devil? I think they'd make an EXCELLENT double feature and I love both movies! And Drag Me To Hell has an element of humor to it... as does Devil, but not so much.

Lelu and Murri -- I LOVED 1408. The ending was classic and even the alternate ending was really good, haha. I know Super 8 isn't supposed to be horror but I agree it looks fantastic! As for the Grudge, Kayako is what I see every time I'm alone in the dark, lmfao. Hellraiser and Alien are also great. AND YES! I loved Scre4m! I hope they make a 5cream, lmao.

  • Thankfully, I have managed to purge my subconscious of the habit of tormenting me with images from The Grudge. Mind over matter, if you will. Took a bit of work, but it is possible to train your brain if you work at it.

Thinking about it, I tend to like psychological thrillers more than "pure horror" type movies. It needs to have a good "mindfuck" type thing going, especially in the ending for best effect.
Fallen had a more lasting impression than many much more violent and gory movies I've seen, for instance.

My soft spot when it comes to gore is anything by Quentin Tarrantino, however.
Nobody does gratuitous gore like Quentin.
Posted 19 months ago by Murri Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @lycan. I looked up Contagion & only found a new 2011 movie coming out, sounds interesting, but a very different concept from the one I watched.
@Cerulean. I haven't seen Drag Me To Hell, but sounds like one of the types I like. Good for a lazy midnight, haha.
I did really like Grudge, and the Grudge clones. I kept wondering tho, why didn't those doofuses just run out of the room...girl was really slow, lol. That movie got me into Japanese horror films.
Fallen was *great*! I had to look it up to recognize it tho, at first I thought you meant Prophecy. I loved that, and the sequels were pretty good. I adore Viggo Mortensen, I'd almost be willing to go to hell for him. Wouldn't want my brain munched on tho, haha. He did such a great job in that, soooo weird.
Posted 19 months ago by Phoebe Springback Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I love Tarntino, haha. And I've yet to see Fallen. I reall should check that out.

As for running our of the room when Kayako shows up, I know that they've tried that in all 3 movies and she usually gets them anyway. Like when (I think it's in the 1st one, or I might be wrong) this one lady sees Kayako outside of her door, she shuts it out and runs to her bed and hides under the sheets, but there she is! Lol.

Brib Annie, I love the fact that you're briniging up all of these classics from when horror/terror was really being born as a film genre. I have yet to see most of them movies you've described but I don't doubt they're amazing.

  • As a child I found Mary Poppins a psychological trauma.. a draconian harpie who could fly with the aid of an umbrella!!! As an adult I have decided it is the result of a pathologically deranged director :P

On a more serious note, although not scary, the dark Guillermo* Del Toro  collection is inspired, whereas the highly enjoyable Prophecy trilogy is a hoot.

  • The first movie (and one of the few) that scared the daylights out of me was Poltergeist. I saw it when I was 12 and the graves popping up out of the ground terrified me

My favorite scary movies are Hellraiser The Ring and Saw. the ring scared me the first time I saw it because my brother told me to pay attention to everything. I went into the theater with my eyes wide open and came out paranoid. thanks, brother.

I haven't seen many scary movies lately that are any good. Guess I've become jaded. too many movies are repeats of others I've seen. I agree that some of the best ones came from decades ago. I loved/ got spooked by the original Last House on the Left.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974, The Hitcher 1986 (Rutger Hauger), Rest Stop 2006, Frozen 2010, Jaws 1975, Piranha 2010 (when the girls hair gets caught in boat prop) , Vacancy 2007, Deliverance 1972, Devils Rejects 2005.
The Human Centipede 2009 is probably the most distrubing movie I have seen in a long time

  • @Aegis I was being rather tongue-in-cheek when I wrote that but I really can't abide the film.
More have sprung to mind, old black and white oldies like "Night of the Demon" and "The Haunting". The first "Children of the Corn" was excellent but the franchise started getting silly at Children of the Corn 85. "The Wicker Man" is a personal favourite, there again the original one steeped in folk-lore and the old religion, not the modern rendition. And I remember reading a book by Thomas Tryon called Harvest Home which thrilled and scared me.. can't remember if there was a film made though.
Posted 19 months ago by snygyst Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I have to add Silence of the Lambs and the sequels and Cape Fear to mine. You can throw in Wicker Man too because I love all Nicholas Cage movies ... someday maybe I'll watch one again... or any other movie for that matter .

ETA: OohOoh... The Hills Have Eyes , Blink , Day of the Animals , Snakes On A Plane ..... oh dear a new brain toy, I'll never sleep ....

I have to say I honestly hate Nick Cage, but I thought Knowing was a really good movie... Peter Jackson's visuals are always stunning but this time they were extraordinary. Pierced my soul.

Snygyst & Aegies, have you seen the Mary Poppins horror movie trailer on YouTube?! It's hilarious! It's called "Scary Mary."

  • Okay, so I went and saw Sleepaway Camp last Friday at midnight with a bunch of fanatics at some indie theater. I had a blast, as always. Three of the main actors were there, too.

Anyway, that movie... somehow it's considered a cult classic, but... the acting was awful and there were some parts that just didn't make sense, and although the twist ending was really interesting, it was also... overdone? Lmao.

ANYWAY, I'm seeing FD5 tomorrow! Another awful movie that exploits shock value but whatever, haha. And Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark later in the month. Wooooo. Anyone else seeing these? :D

  • I'm kind of a fan of Asian horror.

Suicide Club (Jisatsu Circle) and the sequel, Noriko's Dinner Table, are among my favorites. The latter isn't as gorey and definitely not for everyone, but if you want to give it a go, I suggest Suicide Club. The thing about Asian horror is that it's not all just pop-out corpse/zombie scary or exorism related (though, I AM A HUGE ZOMBIE MOVIE FAN.)  Battle Royale is also good, but again, it's not scary scary. I've heard Noroi: The Curse is one of the scariest of the genre, but I haven't seen it yet.

As for American horror, I watch most of them, but I don't think any pops into mind immediately when I'm thinking of "scary." PA 1 was great, PA 2 was awful.

  • I have a "tradition" of seeing really scary movies with my cousin on Christmas night. Yes, I know, it is a little sacrilegious. If there isn't one in theaters, we'll rent some or buy some via pay per view. I will then promptly scare the Christmas spirit out of her. (We both like Christmas, it is just a difficult holiday for us coming from divorced parents and "choosing" which parents/relatives to see)
"The Descent" (2005)  is still one of my favorites. I don't have claustrophobia so I guess it was just the way the film was shot. But oh, my did that film make the horror lover in me squeal with joy! "The Hills Have Eyes" (2006) also made me really happy, and jumpy!  "Silence of the Lambs" is always a good one. And if you want shock horror, "Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning". "Dead Silence" scared me, but I am terrified of dolls....
