...no good free options?

I must admit to being a little disappointed by the lack of housing options that can be attained without credits? I'm getting literally two options for walls. Two. And neither of them is even decent.
I can understand limited options for free, and making the best ones credit-only/subscriber-only (and I would even probably pay to get them), but last I checked this was a free game, and I don't really enjoy being forced into paying money on a "free" game just to make my house not suck.
I know house design isn't -that- important of a feature, so it's not like I'm probably going to quit or anything. But while the users not paying only get two sucky options, I'm also not very likely to pay the money, because if I'm paying money to a "free" online game I'd like it to be on my own terms.
I'm going to hope this is just because the feature is so new, and that it'll be fixed in the near future. :/

  • Does your lack of wallpaper affect your game play? Who's forcing you other than you own desire for wallpaper? That's the only 'force'. Every single aspect of gameplay is free. Credits are only required for decorating aspects of the game is you CHOOOSE to use them. And have you seen how beautifully decorated the houses in this thread are?

Only using non subsriber, non credit options.
Also, there are plenty of people in the Marketplace forum advertising that they are willing to upgrade furniture with credits if they are paid in currants. This won't help you with wallpaper but furniture can be taken care of.

  • Way to be a jerk about it - like I said, I know it's not that important of a feature, but I still think it's something we should have more choice on without spending money. There are several (not a lot, but still some) decent clothing items that are free, while the most (and best) are credit-only, and that's all I'm asking for interior decorating.

  • we just got new furniture items, and some were free. So, I believe there will be more stuff coming later.

Furniture will also be able to be bought on auction later. I am not sure but I think that this will include upgraded options. As far as swatches go, the only things I can recommend is either waiting to see if more free ones come or mixing it up a little by using different swatches on different segments, or using different swatches on different floors. I have a subscribed account and two free ones, so I am able to see both sides. I actually find myself enjoying the decoration on the free accounts more, because I really have to stop and think about what I can have and try to use it to the best of my ability.

    Good luck.

  • All content is free.  Cosmetic customizations are not.  That's been their policy since before my time, and it's still their policy with housing.

They could limit you to 4 bag slots unless you pay for the other 12, prevent you from entering the Ancestral Lands without paying for the content, make the Hell Bar only accessible to subscribers, make Potion Making a pay-to-unlock skill set, but they do not.  Instead, they even give you a few free options for the things they do charge for, and whenever they add, they add to all categories including free (every clothing release has included new free items, our first post-launch furniture release also included freebies).

I think you're getting a pretty good deal.  Not having a fancy house is never going to slow down your mining or prevent you from crafting -- choosing to spend money for vanity items that do not affect game play sounds about as "on your own terms" as it can get.

  • Not being a jerk but you're the one using the word force like you have no options. There is no pressure being applied to you. But whatevs. I didn't sympathize with you so I am sure that seems jerky to you.
Posted 7 months ago by Dinnaga Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Maybe "force" wasn't the right word, you're right. But the way you worded your post sounded rather defensive, while all I did was state my opinion as plainly as possible. (And yes, I see where "force" was probably not as plain as I was trying for.) I understand all of the "best" options being credit-only. It just seems that you have to spend a lot of time in your home to have it be just a concrete-esque all the time. Just flat colors would be nice, I'm not asking for fancy.
I'm not trying to be a jerk about my opinion - I still love the game, and I'm going to keep playing, and some of you have made valid points, which I appreciate.
Posted 7 months ago by Bloody NiGHTS Subscriber! | Permalink
  • But there ARE flat colors, which you described as not even being decent. Yeah, I don't think they're super awesome either, but they're not concrete. Even if they're not super attractive. Try decorating with in game items as well :) Placed in decorate mode they make very nice decorations themselves.

  • Bloody NIGHTS, although I have credits to spend, I'm kind of afraid to spend them in case I need them for something else.  I've only spent about 40 credits and I have three floors with  furniture with some upgrades.  Take a little more time to peruse the options.  Sounds like you've already taken a second look, but still, there are quite a few choices that are free.

I was a bit bummed that the free options don't all  match but then again, some of the pay-upgrades don't really match either.  I'm not that happy with the armchair choices and prefer the plain, rough wood armchair to the costlier upgrades.  Oh, well.

I think the most currents I've spent went towards egg heads in a jar or that fireflies in a jar lamp (yeah, that was worth every credit!) etc. rather than furniture upgrades.  The onyx cabinets are kind of nice, and free.  Oh, and the loveseat has a nice wicker upgrade for free, complete with cushions and pillows.

I hope you find something nice in the free upgrades section.  Oh, also, someone on my friends list posts every so often requesting upgrades that she pays for.  Other players spend their credits on her furniture upgrades and she pays with currants and or items.  Could be a good thing to try, to see if anyone on your list is willing to spare some credits they aren't using.  Since subscribers get credit refills every month and since many have already made the upgrades they wanted, they might wind up with an abundance of unused credits.  You never know...

  • Regarding Glitch being a "free" game. My understanding is this is a major commercial undertaking costing lots of money and with significant financial backers who will want to see a profit. At the same time the game is designed so that, if you want, you can play with every last bit of the game mechanic for free. You only pay for the pretty pictures, and TS is betting that enough people will be willing to do so that the game will return a profit. The way you throw out "free" makes it sound like Glitch is some cheesy little throw-together game. It's not, and you should thank your lucky stars that you can play to your heart's content without ever dropping a penny. Would you really feel better about it if you had to pay to play?

    I've looked.
I've played many games for many years; never gave them a credit/dollar/etc.
    This place inspires me.
Because of the people; because of the responsiveness of the company and its people.

TS gets it exactly right. The tone, the content, the art. Yes, this is just my opinion.
My only criticism of them is the explodeyboxen that we dealt with during the movening.
But that's done now.  Thank you SDBs.

All this reminds me of the two people sitting in a restaurant enjoying the special.

  • Some of us also can't buy subscriptions since they are either in a country where they can't use a debit card to pay for things (I've seen this many times) or maybe they are younger (the game is available to 14 and up) and at 14 I definitely did not have a debit card. So you cant exactly call someone cheap because they aren't subscribed. I honestly haven't subscribed yet because my hours got cut and I'm only making $80 a week and I have more important things to buy with my $9... Like ramen lol. Everyone's in a different situation so dont judge this players post like that. Needless to say I'm kind disappointed in the free choices but yay for free! Lol. Im not really too worried about decorating I just want SDBs and piggies. Everything else is irrelevant to game play =P

But I have not read any from people who would like to pay but are unable to do so because of the country they live in. I wonder how many Glitchen are in that situation.

BTW, I have nothing against people choosing not to pay, and I sympathise with those who would like to see a few more interesting free options. My guess is TS sympathises, too, and I'll bet that some more free options will show up. But remember everyone, if Glitch does not turn a profit it will cease to exist.

Posted 7 months ago by Marla Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Marla, there's also the Onyx Black Cabinet, which will go with most decor.  Natural wood would be nice (as far as I know, the closest are the firebog and the wine rack, but both are credit-only).  I'm sure, though, that there will be many more releases as we go forward, and I expect we'll end up with a broad selection of free items that is at least as good as the diversity in the clothing choices.

  • For furniture at least we can buy using currants from others players, the marketplace forum is full of nice people selling upgrade furniture. And there are also some cute free furnitures around, especially that free blue bed that just got released! Really cute.

But for walls unfortunately there aren't so much free options. It would be cool if we could buy them from other player as well, like we can for upgraded furniture. If TS makes that possible, buying upgraded swatches from others I would be already so happy. But if not is ok too.

I just wish that the brown bog wallpaper from the bog homes were free. I miss my bog home.

I'm hoping that they'll add a bit more of free swatches sometime in the future, look how many nice hanging decorations they added for free <3

    _______________

And, in my case I just can't buy a subscription because I don't have a credit card and I live in another country as well.

If it could accept debit card or another payment type that I could pay without having to use a credit card it would be amazing though.

  • " There are several (not a lot, but still some) decent clothing items that are free, while the most (and best) are credit-only, and that's all I'm asking for interior decorating. "

I think that the options available to free players at the beginning of the game were more generous because Glitch had a stronger need for free players at the beginning. A new mmorpg needs a critical mass of players in the game or it appears to be a boring ghost-town and then no one wants to come back, much less pay.

Now that the current free players have so much time invested that they are unlikely to leave and mmorpg forums are full of prospective players begging for Glitch invites, TS does not need to be so generous with the free stuff.

That being said, I think that there is still a lot of really great free home decorating choices. Like many others, I think it is an interesting challenge to decorate on the cheap. And once we can auction furniture there will be an awesome selection.  The swatches are the only part you would need to upgrade yourself and many are not that pricey. Also, isn't there something where free members get some credits when you join? Even if it only 100, (what I think I remember) that still can still get you several floors of swatch upgrades.

Right now our new housing options are on everyone's mind but when the novelty wears off I think that we will refocus on gameplay where we are all equal and the limitations of being a free player will seem much less onerous.

Edit: I do agree that the free light-blue furniture options are very unappealing. To me it looks like some kind of glow-in-the-dark plastic.

    1. I'm currently unemployed and I have been for some time.
    2. I'm also a part-time student.
    3. I also have a boyfriend 2000 miles away, and I need to save up if I ever want to be able to visit him.

I don't buy cases of beer, ever. Or basically anything. I buy plane tickets twice a year. And I'm sure there are people who play this game who are far worse off financially than I am, since I have the benefit of living with parents. It really rubs me the wrong way to see you assume everyone who complains about not having enough free options is "a cheap-ass".

And personally, I'm more likely to re-sub (when I can) when I see that TS is offering their non-paying players a reasonable amount of housing content, comparable to the vanity & wardrobe (enough that we can all have unique-looking housing without having to pile on the SDBs)

  • Just to note 10/25 of the most recent furniture options were free.
So, 40 pct. of the most recent releases were free.
40 pct. vs, your average Zynga (retch) game, is an impressive percentage.

As for those of you under financial stress, I get it. I was unemployed for 24+ months.

  • Regarding the percentages of the recent products that are free: I don't think anyone is sad about the percentages. I think what people are wistful about is their inability to put together a nice basic free room.

A lot of the new free stuff is fluff like hanging decorations. Sure that is fun but it doesn't help free players put together a room they can call home.

What free players seem to really want is the ability to make a basic, acceptable looking house. I think the problem would be solved by making the default, non-upgraded furniture a bland, brown wood style. Not the super-ugly, shop-class-reject, rickety, junky style that we currently start with. Just give the free players something matching and not-hideous for the basic foundational pieces.

I used to be all "you should be willing to pay for something this awesome" about Glitch but then I witnessed how much value the free players brought to the community and I changed my mind. Glitch would be a very lonely, dreary, uninspired place without the free players. Given how much they add to our experience (and to TS's bottom line) I think it is only fair that they be given a base of matching, non-hideous furniture to get started with.

There are so many reasons why free players remain free... If you look around you will see that they are some of the most active and generous players. Let's cut them some slack and give them a set of matching furniture that doesn't make them cringe every time they look at it.

  • Honestly..I think the easiest fix is to just make it so somehow one can get everything by trading with someone else.

Right now a truely free player...can get any armchair they want, for instance, by trading someone who has paid credits for said armchair look, and trade away the item that got the armchair look.

Just find a way to apply that to wallpaper, floors, ceilings.  Maybe make it so the walls are literally made up of wall segments...that could be removed or traded out for wall segments in your inventory?  Then make it so when you purchase wallpaper...you actually purchase a set amount of segments of that kind of wallpaper?

Do similar with floors/ceilings (maybe you purchase so many floors/ceilings worth of paint....so you can trade away 1 floor worth of..floors to someone else...and then they can make a single floor that style..while yous till have 2 floors left).

Then just make sure there is a good reason to continue trading for stuff.  A reason why people would keep wanting more and more currents...or whatever.  Personally I think finding a way to tie upkeep to currants..without making it too annoying would be nice.

  • So, there was recently a "contest" for exactly this purpose. It was hosted to give folks with no subscription the chance to decorate using free stuff to see what could be accomplished. It was expanded to allow subscribers to enter but you had to use NO subscriber based options and most of us didn't spend any currants (myself included - I still have all of my original 100 credits that were given out with a new account and I am not, yet, a subscriber). Here's a page showing all of the entrants submitted designs.

You may not like the free options, but there is a wide variety of what can be made with them that doesn't look like crap. Most of the homes are not the nicest homes to be found in the imagined areas of UR, but they're pretty awesome for being absolutely free. I was lucky, I got 1st runner up for my design. I am in the process of getting some upgrades that are being donated by the folks (and friends of folks) who hosted the contest. I am getting only 1 piece of actual furniture upgraded - mostly because I am sort of obsessed with the style in RL too (the small Danish modern cabinet). All of the other upgrades are to lamps, hanging decorations and SDB's. I like my design so much that I am having a hard time figuring out what to change around to accomodate the new items I am going to have.

If you're broke, like me, you can make the 4 wall, 2 floor, and 3 or 4 free ceiling swatches work for you AND take some pride in your finished design!

I look forward to seeing what you do put together :)

  • At the risk of being jumped on, I would suggest that part of the reason free players may feel discouraged about the currently available free options is this: before the housing change, we had a wide variety of housing options/looks available to us for currants, and now we don't. You had a bog house/Meadows cottage/etc before the change? Whelp, good luck trying to recreate it with only free options. Sure, you can buy upgraded furniture from other Glitches with credits, but I would argue that wallpaper is the single most transformative option for your house, and free players can't really do much about that. (I've been a free player since beta, but broke down and got a moly sub for a month for myself last week. The deciding factor? Wallpaper.)

Now, what I will say is that we've essentially just traded one kind of flexibility for another. With old housing, the entire player base had a wide range of adorable houses available to them, but storage and yard resources were limited; now, instead, we have a wide range of yard resource/style and storage options, but limited interior style (if you're a free player). Personally, after considering it, I feel it's an acceptable exchange (but ideally, more free wallpaper plox (just basic colors!)... are you annoyed by how many times I've mentioned wallpaper yet? Wallpaper wallpaper wallpaper).

  • @tiggy: Many of the contestants (myself included) built furniture using resources available to ALL players. In my house I built many, many shelves, Two Large Cabinets, 3 Wall cabinets, a desk, a stool, an armchair, a bench, an SDB, Three rugs and a loveseat (that I can recall when just sitting here and imagining my house layout). Prior to the contest, I went through all of the furniture pages in the Encyclopedia and looked at the free options - I built furniture according to the items that appealed to me (and that might go nicely with other things). Of course, in the last few days, new items have been released that I would have put into my home (like the Origami Cranes) had they been an option originally.

The hardest part of my house was adding doors and two floors. Very time consuming and relatively expensive resource-wise. This is why, even now, I have not expanded sideways at all in my home. If you need any help building additional furniture (as in, you do not have the skills or machines to do it yourself), people like myself would be happy to help!  :)
Posted 7 months ago by foolbunny Subscriber! | Permalink
  • MX Ghostie, I totally agree about the wallpaper (& floor) swatches being a major transformative option.

I also tried making rooms using just free furniture (though I used them in combination with 1 wallpaper swatch & 2 floor options that weren't free - they cost 65 credits for the 3 I think) - living room, kitchen, & bedroom & I think they turned out well!  I personally think it's worth $3 to get a better wallpaper & floor option, but I realise that not everyone has access to a credit card or paypal account, or financial constraints.

I do think it'd be great if there was more range in free options for furniture & wallpaper/floors though - I'd love it if (in game) we could craft our own wallpaper - using paper + dyes or wood stains made from plants/herbs/etc to get solid colour wallpapers in a larger variety of colours, & stains for wooden floors.

  • @Tiggy, if you have the furnituremaking skill, you can make and use an unlimited number of furniture items. They're not yet available for auction but if you want to buy some, post in the marketplace and you will easily find a seller.  Credit-upgraded items have a high sale price, understandably, but for raw furniture you should be able to afford anything that strikes your fancy.

  • I agree with the idea that TS find a way to do two things:

    1)  Create a single suite of free furniture that looks well together.  I tried to put together a nice-looking home and was irritated to find that there was neither a unifying color palette, nor a unified design style that was available without credits. The wardrobe does a much better job of letting free players create a personal style

    2)  Create a way for people with credits to give free players nicer wall, floor, and ceiling segments.
Posted 7 months ago by WindBorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Oh my goodness. Patience: It's that virtue thing everyone is talking about.

I know, as someone who was NOT a subscriber for a long time because it was not financially viable that it can be frustrating to see your design and/or wardrobe options limited because you have no money to spend. But their are non-subscribers who do have the money to spend. They're out there. And TS needs to give them more incentive (other than wanting to support the company that makes a game they enjoy) to spend their money. So this is how they're doing it. There will likely always be free options. And there will probably be more released each time new designs are released. BUT the options available to subscribers are always going to be more appealing to large portions of the player base. Because TS needs to make money. If you don't like the current free options, perhaps the future free options will be more to your liking.

Or you'll find a way to pay for a game you've been enjoying. I know this is easier said than done for a lot of people.
