Is it more efficient to mine for the ingredients to make EHSP and sell that, or to just sell the chunks of rock?

My most recent strategy has been to create EHSP from the shiny chunks I've been mining. There's something like a 500 currant gain when you make EHSP out of the chunks rather than selling the chunks on their own. However, doing so requires extra money for energy and I think that might negate the extra currants gained. Further, making the EHSP requires either extra time gathering Flaming Humbabas or extra energy, and I think in that time you could mine more chunks of rock which would probably get you extra gems. On the other hand, if you make a substantial investment in energy/humbabas early on I can see this becoming a non-issue.

What do you think?

  • I suck at math, always go with my gut, and my gut says that making EHSP is a pain in the keister.  I always buy it, but I also don't have millions of currants like many others who make and sell EHSP, so my gut is clearly even worse at math than my brain.

I am also not a miner, I mostly mine to make ingots and the things that are made with ingots, so I don't usually sell my chunks either.

I say go with your gut. Or with the advice of some very smart person who is going to post right after me.

  • I have nothing interesting to add, I just wanted to claim Nanookie's 'very smart person' accolade.

    My gut says make it.

  • If you lvl up mining and you know how to cook for yourself it can be very profitable.

  • If you're not interested in clicking repeatedly in dark caves, then it's not really worth mining ever.  The common "going rate" on the auction page is quite close to making buying from the auction page slightly profitable.  However, you will not make profit the way you would if you felt like doing all those clicks yourself.  In essence, at this stage it would seem that by far the most profit in the game comes from the act of harvesting (aside from market manipulation wins and other profiteering)-- i.e., if you buy and sell at the going rate these days, you sorta break even.

  • I estimated my costs (without assists) to be about 5k (cost of ore, cost of food, etc…) and the going rate is barely half that. In other words, it's just not worth it. Selling the ore saves a ton of hassle and work, you'll probably earn more ¢/hour vendoring the ore than crushing, tubing, and beakering all that ore.
