Magic tuesday - foxes, sloths, cabinets, oh my!

i.imgur.com/7mU5s.png

I hope you've all brushed up on your fox brushing (get it??), because foxes have finally been discovered in Ur. Time to get some fiber and turn it into cloth with the spindle and loomer; grab them from your local hardware or animal goods vendor.

If foxes aren't up your alley, then perhaps the sloth is more to your liking. Grab some metal rods and prepare to make snails. Sloths love metal.

For those players who have a lot of junk to store, we've reintroduced cabinets. They come in 3 sizes (small, regular and wall) and a variety of designs. Just check your furniture bag next time you're home (You'll need to leave your house and /home again to get them).

Miss your old firebog home? No longer! We've released some new furniture upgrades so your can recreate your authentic bog experience.

So head out to brush some foxes and create some snails. Lets us know what you think and tell us about any bugs you uncover. Go!

Note 1: We're gradually unlocking new areas of the world. This process will take a couple of hours.

---Known Issues---

We are investigating these things:

-Open verb may be available when new Cabinet is in your bag
-Some players may not be getting the Fox Brush or Bait from Ranger
-Some cabinets which have more than 16 slots only allow you that many- FIXED
-Rug recipe was removed- not a bug, sorry!

-Inventory area grows large with pixelated graphic when using fox brush for some players
-Reports of zooming issues near Foxes and Sloths
-Loss of Fiber when canceling spinning action- FIXED
-If you get Fox Brush out before Fox appears, brushing may fail

-Spaceship Cabinet takes two tries to open- FIXED
-Stuck Sloth on Kaha Haha- FIXED
-Keyholders cannot open cabinet- yet.

-Going "back to world" with an open cabinet will show the open cabinet display. Just hit "done" to close it then.

Maybe an olde timey fox who sits on his porch telling tales of days long gone wherein the only way he could get fox bait was by walking 15 miles uphill both ways in the snow

  • Have the foxes become harder to brush? I feel like I was getting more fibers Tues-Weds, and now the foxes run like they're on no-no. (To clarify, I mean the foxes used to stay in one area more often, and now they tend to run back and forth across the whole length of the preserve)

  • Hmm... I want a
    "Don't feed the foxes sign"
Loving everything. Although..... I want a way to interact with the foxes further!!
And I want a Fox Ranger SOMETHING!!

    Love everything!! Thanks!!

  • When i move snocones into a cabinet slot the melted sad snocone picture comes up and says -10 (sno cones) but they seem to be fine in the cabinet and when i take them out. but it scared the beans out of me at first because the icon makes you think you've destroyed them.
dont know if this is a bug or not...but i dont remember it doing this in my old house when i would place sno cones in the cabinets...

  • Perhaps the sign in fox preserves could actually say "Trading is prohibited"? ;)
Posted 8 months ago by MarbhDamhsa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Beans I noticed the exact same snocone behavior at the cabinet in my bog house a few weeks ago. If it's a bug, it pre-dates new cabinets.

  • Aleph Zero - I'd be very down for that. :D I get lots of fiber that I'd be happy to share with those who can't comfortable get any under the current mechanic.

Staff - can we just get a "Yeah, we heard you, but no" or something? It feels like this concern is being systematically ignored even though it's come up on almost every page of this thread.

  • "Yeah, we heard you, but no." (Assuming you are talking about changing fox brushing to something keyboard driven.)

  • "Do you have any suggestions for those who have disabilities that cause them to struggle with the current mechanic?" - buy fiber from other players! having a niche in-game is a good thing

  • A big shout out to Aleph Zero who just started a new group:

    The Fiber Exchange
Does fox brushing cause you pain?
Does it cause you pain to know that Glitching causes other people pain? Are you turned off by the idea of profiting from others' pain with exorbitant fiber prices? Are you handy with a fox brush?
You've all come to the right place. The Fiber Exchange is a group for people with fiber-to-spare to connect with people who are shut out of affordable/comfortable/possible fiber collection. The clicky-pointy interface for fox brushing will be with us for the foreseeable future, so join us in keeping textiles accessible to all Glitchen!

  • At the very least, is it possible to make it so when passing over another player it doesn't select them and tell me I can't trade? It adds a pause and I lose track of the fox. I'm having enough difficulty as it is with the regular game lag.

  • 1. I love this game and have been enjoying it greatly. The Sloths and Foxes are great, SDBs are great, cabinets are meh after getting used to SDBs lol.

    2.  "having a niche in-game is a good thing"  Bees!

This would be true if it was simpler, easier, cheaper to get something from another player than making it yourself. Currently it is not.

I killed a bubble tree but didn't have a bubble bean.

So: went /home, crushed dullite, made tin, made a spice mill (rube trade), made a bubble bean, cycled through 7-10 houses to get back to where I was on the route in a few minutes.

The other options are auctions, no bubble there right now. Even if there were it'd be 10 minutes.

Or find someone, somehow, who is selling a single bubble bean who is willing to drop whatever they are doing to meet me on one of our /homes. For 200-300 currants. Riiiight.

For practical game play generalization is easier than specialization.

  • "This would be true if it was simpler, easier, cheaper to get something from another player than making it yourself. Currently it is not."

Not for single items, but for anything in bulk it should be better. There's a big time cost to switching what you're doing - two people both mining and harvesting will yield less resources over time than if one person mines full time and the other person harvests.

And obviously investing in the skills for one thing is quicker than for all the things. One issue right now is that many beta players have virtually all the skills, so specialization isn't happening there (and there aren't many low level players during beta).

  • When I was at the Kutu Preservation for the first time (half an hour ago) I got all my stuff from the ranger, and everything was going good: I was able to ride off someone else's bait, but then she stopped putting down bait, so I decided to put down my own! Well, I ignited it, and went to brush my fox, and I couldn't move! I couldn't click on anything except to open up chats and open the map! So I was forced to sit and watch the fox eat my bait, then had the brilliant idea to TP out (it worked) then come back in and try again..... So I greeted the ranger, bought another bait, tried again: SHIT! So what I'm wondering is: Can this be fixed, or am I doomed to be a forced opportunist for the rest of my Glitch-filled fox-brushing days?
Posted 8 months ago by RJStormRider Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I understand (and agree!) that TS believes that the game will be better as players are forced to specialize, but I have to say that I am disappointed with the responses above by Stoot and Bees regarding requests for better accessibility for fox brushing.

RSIs really suck to have, and up until this point I was really pleased with how well the game controls avoided aggravating mine. I know not all player requests can (or should) be accommodated, but I wish that TS would have elaborated a bit more; as it stands it seems dismissive in an out-of-character way.
Posted 8 months ago by Knitomaton Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Specialization isn't happening because it is much cheaper to learn 40 cheap skills than to get, say, a single Mining IV or Animal Kinship VII. Even then it's not a question of if a person is going to get every skill, but when.

The time cost of switching also has problems. That cost is generally lost in the noise - it's on the order of seconds for most tasks, very rarely more than a minute. In some cases even just opening the auction page and finding an auction takes longer, let alone waiting for it to be delivered. And what did you have to do to find that auction?  Right - you had to stop what you were doing in game and switch tasks to "auction buying" instead of "resource gathering".

  • Stoot, you are about to lose a paying customer. No, I don't subscribe.  Yes, I've bought credits and was planning on getting more with the housing release. One of the reasons I play Glitch is because it's keyboard-driven and I can play as much as I like without pain. The question that springs to mind is "If Tiny Speck doesn't care about the fox brushing mechanic and how it impacts people with repetitive strain injuries, what will I be shut out of next if I continue to play (and spend money) on Glitch?"
Posted 8 months ago by Lucille Ball Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Hmm.... The above seems to be an overreaction just a bit to me.... Are you saying that you will quit the game completely? If so, why not just do the keyboard driven things, and pay a few hundred currants every once in a while to buy some fiber?
Posted 8 months ago by RJStormRider Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Lucille Ball.  Not to be insensitive, but this is not constructive.  Let me help you by adding my voice.  I'm not as disadvantaged as Lucille, but I also have some RSI that flares up once in a while.  It makes using the mouse quickly very difficult and Fox Brushing quite impossible.  Is it possible for there to be a keyboard option to give those of us who do have those issues a fair chance to access the new content?  Thank you for looking into this
Posted 8 months ago by Cherry Cat Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I have to say I'm 100% with Knitomaton.  While I absolutely understand that this isn't a trivial request, and that it may be so complex as to be prohibitive to implement, I don't think brushing off these concerns with a (seemingly) snarky response with no explanation is productive.
Posted 8 months ago by Zoethor2 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • fox brushing is not going to be changing to use the keyboard. take part in one of the hundreds of other activities in the game instead.

if we changed the game every time someone threatened to quit, we'd never get anything done. or if we took the time to explain every decision to every player. sorry!
Posted 8 months ago by Bees! Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Bees! - that kind of flip response is really discouraging, especially since the majority who have chimed in on the issue have not been demanding or rude or threatened to quit. It's a "sorry" that isn't an apology.

Don't get me wrong, I love the game and I think all of the new functionality is great and am impressed with what you guys are making. I'm sure you guys have been busting your butts and are tired of whiny users.  However, the tone that is coming through in this interaction clashes with the reason I fell in love with Glitch and TS in the first place. It's disappointing.

  • Knitomaton: what exactly are you looking for? what would satisfy you?
Posted 8 months ago by Bees! Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Cherry Cat - My constructive post was two pages back.

Bees!, I honestly thought I was playing a game that had been deliberately and carefully designed to be friendly to people who can't mouse much.  Can you see why I'm upset?
Posted 8 months ago by Lucille Ball Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Lucille Ball, I'm sorry, but that just isn't the case. We like to try and make everything accessible via the keyboard, but it's not a "big design goal" of Glitch. There are some activities that require using a mouse.
Posted 8 months ago by Bees! Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Gotcha.  Bummer.  Thanks for explaining, Bees!.  Glitch was so easy on my hands until now it was a bit of a shock when I got a few stacks of fiber and had to go ice my hand.  I played for hours on end with the street projects and had no issues at all.  It was glorious!  I have had to quit quite a few games I liked when I realized they just plain hurt. I'd hate to see Glitch go that direction.

I think the thing that's causing issues for me is the repeated fast swipe while holding down the mouse.  If I could hover my mouse over the fox and then press a key to trigger the brushing it would not be painful.  Moving the mouse without having to hold down the left button is fine.

  • I was put off by the quick dismissal of the request and flippant tone because there are a number of types of conditions that could cause a person to have accessibility issues.

I design experiences that (mostly) live on the web, so I'm pretty familiar with many of the temporary and permanent conditions and other reasons that people might have trouble with an experience. It's not feasible for most of my projects to be designed to accomodate all of those potential disabilities because of design goals/audience/budget/timeline/scope, so I figure I probably understand better than most the types of conversations you might have had about the request.

In this case, I get why you made the decision. If a person can't brush foxes, there are plenty of other things to do in the game. (I'll trade snails for fiber, and thanks to Aleph Zero for setting up a trading group!) I have an idea of what kinds of things TS had to consider in making the decision, but lots of players don't.

What was I looking for? I was looking for more sensitivity and explanation because it was an issue surrounding accessibility, and people (understandably) internalize their disabilities. Hearing "yeah, we heard you, but no" is a lot harder to shrug off when you're talking about physical pain in the arm that is attached to you than being bummed that your bog house is going away.

What would satisfy me? I'm glad to have had this dialog and I appreciate you listening. Y'all at TS are making neat stuff and the fact that you do participate in the forums is one of the reasons I respect you enough to bring it up in the first place!
