Skill tree planning for the reset

If there is one thing we get to keep after the reset is our knowledge of the game

 So I was thinking that it might be useful to plan ahead the most efficient way to build our skill trees after the reset. What is your criteria? what set of skills are you going to learn first?

  • I know I made many mistakes building mine after the previous reset because I wasn't aware that after the 10th skill everything else takes more time. The good thing is a I got a good grasp of what each skill set does.

    I rely a lot on no-no and I focus mostly on mining and cocktails. I also believe that engineering will play a big role after the reset (expanding houses!) even when right now it only works for donating to projects.

  • I guess I'm leaning towards mining...  I think that's where I can gain the currants needed to get a house and buy some bigger bags...

    But the more I play, the less I'm in a hurry to really accomplish anything.  I like meandering around... cooking a dish here.... mixing a drink there....

    Mostly, I come here to relax...  the path of least resistance...?  The road less traveled....?

  • I'm torn on this--skills I learned awhile ago that I thought at the time were useless have suddenly become useful, so I'm not sure that I would really want to get rid of (or not learn) any of them. I guess the order of learning is the important thing here, but I would really like to "know it all"...

  • Hmm... if I concentrate solely on efficiency and strategic learning, I`d probably go for the big 4 (5?) as quickly as possible so the compounding time increase penalties are kept to a minimum.  But a lot will also depend on what sorts of changes we see happen to the skills table in the upcoming months prior to going live.  Heaven knows if the devs will throw another really long skill in the mix resulting in all my earlier numbers getting tossed out the window.  :P

  • Marebito, as it is you will probably only get to just ONE of the five before getting penalties (they start after the 10th skill you learn)
    Posted 19 months ago by Yaya Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I have no intentions of beginning to form a strategy until we see some of the 60-odd new skills the dev's have mentioned. This thread is waaay too early IMO.

  • @Yaya  Actually, since BL5 gives you up to 37 skills free, it's possible to get the big 4 or even all 5 (sic BL5) big skills done before getting hit by penalties.

    beta.glitch.com/forum/gener...

    and if you would like some more numbers, there's also this post that put elsewhere.  :)

  • Well put Travinara, we've already seen how a minor code change can have pretty big ramifications on the value of skills (making the harvest bonuses random and implementing the learning time penalties for example.)

    But I think some things can't change at this point, what skills you put an emphasis on learning all depend on what you want to accomplish.

  • Went to go fetch the link for the Unlearn A Skill discussion....

  • Another thing that skill progression depends on will be what vendors (if any!) will be in the world come next reset.  If Helga's still around, I might just put off cocktail mixing and blending right until the very end...

    Although the BL series is going to be much more of a priority next time around.
    Posted 19 months ago by Blitz Subscriber! | Permalink
  • BL 5 will be my priority followed by other skills evenly,since all other skills will have their own benefits. So with BL5 + tons of emblems, I will be able to learn rest of the skills on need basis in decent amount of time.
    Posted 19 months ago by gia Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I had no idea that BL5 grants free skills!
    Posted 19 months ago by Yaya Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Each of the BL skills increases the number of skills you can learn before the compounding penalty takes effect:

    BL0 = 20 skills
    BL1 = 21 skills
    BL2 = 24 skills
    BL3 = 28 skills
    BL4 = 32 skills
    BL5 = 37 skills

    Mind you, these numbers apply only as long as they don't tweak things on us again before going live.  :)

  • After the last reset, I had some plan for learning skills in a particular order, but I didn't stick with it because it was frustrating to be without certain basic skills early on.  I find it much easier and more enjoyable to play when I have a smattering of everything.

  • I think it depends on your goals (or lack of) in the game.  I am with Pirate Apples and glum pudding in kind of wandering around picking up skills as they interest me.
    It is a hopeless strategy for getting on really, but since I can't play enough to be at the top of the leaderboards it suits me.
    I like to make enough to have a big house for the garden and patches, but don't really care about levelling up or stuff.  I want to make the game last as long as possible!
    I think that this is one of the good things about Glitch, there is scope for everyone to play in their own way and do things as they choose.
    (It is also one of the biggest benefits of being a tester - one can find out this stuff before we start for real!)

  • During the last test, I spent the time getting the skills that I had available down to 5 minutes each. Then unlocking skills that would let me learn longer skills first, meaning they had less added time for each additional skill. As it stands now I have 6 skills with just 5 mins learning time left, 1 at 9 hours, 1 at 1.5 days and tinkering V which I got down to 3 days during the last break. Im currently learning gardening v which has just over 2 days left.

    when we get back into the game i will work on getting my 3 longer skills down to 5 minutes, except for tinkering which ill save for the next break as its the longest i will have left. once everything else is down to a few minutes ill finish learning them in order to unlock the remaining few skills starting with the one that will be the longest to learn, so for me that will be unlocking MC 1 and 2.

    The time added after each skill is learnt is based on how long you have left to learn the skill not the original length of the skill, so getting them all down to a few minutes means only a few seconds are added, even when its a 5 day skill. I really hope they don't change this!

    Depending on what changes they make will determine which skills I learn first after the reset but my strategy will probably stay the same.

    Reading back, I have really over-thought this one! I hope it makes sense to someone at least

  • I don't like the extra learning times either, but they probably will and actually should change that skill-pausing workaround, as it seems a bit of a cheat since it doesn't appear to fit with the intention of the whole increased learning time / Better Learning situation.

  • I doubt that I will apply a strategy to my skills learning after the reset; I probably will take mining early because the hardest thing for me early on was not having enough currants to buy bags and then a house. I did buy the least expensive style of house and even though I have plenty of currants will probably not switch locations before reset. I want to see how things change between now and going live, see if we do get add'l teleportation spots and how that will impact the choice of house location. I was overwhelmed at first w/so many quests in the beginning and now feel a little at a loss since the only quest I have is the amazing race (I am not very coordinated as you guys probably know if you have seen my trying to jump around to climb in some of the newer locations). For me the quests have added fun and I think it would be great to get some random quests based on skills you have learned in the past. Trav I had heard mention of unlearning skills, but missed the post you shared w/us; I can see how that could change the dynamics of learning as we get more skills.

  • Wow Sherbert that is really useful info. Thanks!

  • I am sure by next test or by end of beta; sherbert's work around will be fixed. Anyone know the numbers on shrine donations vs learning times?

  • "Reading back, I have really over-thought this one!"

    Here's my process.

    1) I wait until I'm not learning anything
    2) I look at the skills tree to see what I fancy next.
    3) I click on it to start learning.
    4) Go to 1)

    It works for me.

  • @ Gizmospooky: Contact me when you want to win The Amazing Race. If you think you are uncoordinated, you should see me try to jump and climb!  LOL. You will win for sure.  Last test I finally finished the Memory Tree quest! I was so proud of myself! I did a happy dance!

    @Sherbert: Thanks for the helpful information. I'm going to try it next test, now that I have a better sense of how to build up favor for speed learning.

  • I take a glitch vacation and just train skills from the mobile website for a few days.

    On a related note, does anyone have a strategy for quickly increasing favor? What do the emblems do?
    Posted 19 months ago by Floppy Sweats Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Shrines can be used to reduce the learning time of a skill by up to 50%. I believe that speedy learning mode doubles the rate at which you learn, although this is a bit confusing as it also displays as a flat reduction of the time left to learn the skill. After you've reduced the remaining learning time by 50%, the rock will be in speedy learning mode for the rest of the time left on the skill, and you won't be able to reduce it any further through shrines.

    You can, however use Pungent Sunrises to reduce the skill time, I believe by 90 seconds at a time after you've hit your limit at the shrines. But this might also be a workaround that could be fixed if it goes against the 'spirit of the law'.

  • I'll be more like dopiaza, cuz it's not like we'll be trying to beat a reset anymore.  Taking 2 months or 2 years is fine with me.
    Posted 19 months ago by Tingly Claus Subscriber! | Permalink
  • No real strategy post-reset. Most likely, take my time pushing through the Better Learnings to get the most use from them. With probably mining until I get to level 3 and then donating bunches to Lem to get that emblem.
    Yes, without Resets dangling over me, I'll be more relaxed.
    Of course, when they introduce new skills, I will probably get all excited by new shinys and get distracted.

  • katlazam, thank you for the information about shrines. Is the 50% reduction of the base time; or is it 50% of the entire time including the penalties etc? I won't be in a hurry to learn all skills upto level 5 or 6, but it will be nice to have atleast level 1 in most of the skills.
    Posted 19 months ago by gia Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Including penalties. Skills longer than ~34 hours can't be knocked down that far cuz you run out of shrines.
    Posted 19 months ago by Tingly Claus Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Tingly, except it is just a game day limit, right?
    Posted 19 months ago by Lord Bacon-o Subscriber! | Permalink
  • oh yeah, I forgot.  That complicates things.  I don't know what the ~34 hours would actually be, then.  Is it 1,500 for all shrines combined?
    Posted 19 months ago by Tingly Claus Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm a bit undecided on the better learnings. I know it will speed up the other skills, but to just do level 1-5 before doing anything else, would mean a boring first few days. Plus how do I earn the first 1000 donation points I need for the emblem of Lem (to unlock level 3) without having any other skills?
    Posted 19 months ago by FrankenPaula Subscriber! | Permalink
  • That's why Mining I will be my first skill.
    Posted 19 months ago by Tingly Claus Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Tingly, no idea. But it appears you and I will be on the same track for the first week or so post-reset.
    Posted 19 months ago by Lord Bacon-o Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm thinking I will focus on the things needed for the house and papers, mining and the better learnings at first.

    Past that I will probably just take my time and work my way down different trees. I will probably work on at least the basics of all the skills and maybe work my way down the AK tree.
    Posted 19 months ago by Little Miss Giggles Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Giggles I was thinking the same thing. I'm going to concentrate on Better Learning and Bureaucratic Arts initially. Once I have my Papers, I'll focus on Mining to get the house I want.

    After that, I'll probably focus on whatever skills I need to participate in projects. I'm not sure what those would be, though.
    Posted 19 months ago by Elnard McThwack Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I feel so much better with a house (home base).  I'll concentrate on what I need to get my papers then Mining so I can earn enough currants to buy a house.  This time my house came with a 16 slot cupboard, 5 patches (one already planted), butterflies, chickens and piggies AND 2 remote meat collectors, a piggy feeder and a butterfly milk collector.  I concentrated on AK so I could get to Remote Herdkeeping so I could USE the meat  milk collectors.  I wish I had thought to try out different locations & types of houses so I'd know what I wanted when the game goes live.

  • I think I'll probably do the 1st of AK, Mining, Tink, BL, Elem Hand, MA first.... then work on my better learning and more of the above!  soooo giddy to see what the new skills might be! :)
