can we just settle this. family game or not?

i can't really find an official definition for what a family game is or not, but i mean, it's essentially the same as a 'family film' in regards to the use of language. so, while 'family game' doesn't have an objective definition (yet), 'family film' does. it's "a film genre that is designed to appeal to a variety of age groups and, thus, families." i think we all agree that the game appeals to many age groups. i suppose we could also agree that the game is PG-13 considering that a player must be 13 years or older to play (with parental consent). films typically are upgraded to PG-13 from PG when language is used sparingly (generally, less than 4 times) or the movie is especially violent. note that Glitch never uses language and is never violent, so the game really should be PG or even G. Certainly, it would be rated E for everyone with a disclaimer that they cannot control the content experienced online.

ultimately though, the game has parallels with a family film that's rated PG-13. and as such, we shouldn't use language.

thank you for your time.

(edit: ToS says 14 years or older, so I guess PG-14 would be more accurate.)

  • wooo! three pages!

i went away to do work and look-a whut happened.

serious business first: in my area the local youth orchestra association has an annual used instrument sale. if you are looking for a second hand trombone  something like that would be a good start.

as for the band, pianos can be pressed into service for marching bands, either with dollies or trailers. it's done all the time.

as for what i have in inventory that might be useful i think i have (not looking in the closet) not only a trombone, but also a trumpet, an f horn, three clarinets, a saxophone, a full consort of recorders and a couple of krumhorns, a snare drum, assorted hand percussion, a korg M1 synth, three guitars (no, five) and a set of bagpipes. i also have a collection of whistles and things.

and i have an idea! let's make a virtual band! you've seen those things on youtube where a group of people all record tracks to the same song separately and then someone cuts them together into an ensemble?

    like this?

we could have a music box and march together through the streets of groddle while playing it for everyone in the street!

    it beats sneezing powder.

  • flask: you are an instrumentalist after my own heart. I have a classical, a steel-strung acoustic and an electric guitar, a ukulele, an electro-acoustic mandolin, a pink violin, a flute, a small zither and a gigantic coffee-table-sized liturgical chorded zither, a couple of recorders, a Chinese membrane flute, a harmonica, assorted rattles and percussion, and an Indian rhythm instrument I believe is called a gopichand. I'm best on the guitar and the flute, and I can't play the violin at all (I just reeeeeeeally wanted a bowed string instrument) but the others I can make some kind of a stab at.

Oh, I have a long brass post-horn somewhere too, and a very poor-quality bamboo zummara. And a kalimba/thumb-piano. Can I join the band? :)

  • Ferond,

I don't use them in GC or LC. But I find it interesting that you take offense to me calling someone a jackoff who called me one. At the same time it's in a thread where people are blatantly insulting me. Yes, I called WindBorn that once, and I later admitted I was wrong to do that. She just really miffed me with her original reply to my old thread which I felt was just as rude. But that's neither here nor there. That's in the past, and it's already resolved.

I feel that life is filled with gray area. Ass is ok because it's another word for donkey, and it's just not that bad. But I refrain from using it in GC and LC. Jackoff to me is another way of saying jerk. I feel that the idea and the word are safe, but again, I admit they shouldn't be used in GC/LC (otherwise known as Public Chats). This should be pretty obvious. Considering the amount of language used in this thread, I don't see how it makes me suddenly hypocritical to use them now.

And to the people who say I'm not relinquishing to the high levels of reason... you must have a different definition of reason. Not to mention, I finally did agree with Quirk. Though I never disagreed with his definition of what a family game is or isn't. But 'for fun,' let's lay out all of the reasons provided.

    Stewart Quotes
This is a game for adults.

This doesn't mean the game can't appeal to young adults, elderly, men and women, etc. This still leaves a very wide ranging appeal. All of us Adults. He even talks about people who are adult-minded later in a quote found by Quirk. That is, the game is for people who are pseudo-intellectuals. Adult or not.

    WindBorn's Stewart Quote
This game is not for kids.

I never said that it was. Read my original post. I never once mentioned children or kids. Yes, I feel that 14 year old are kids. That's my opinion, but it's irrelevant. A game can be a family game and not be a kid's game. Using my definition a game merely has to appeal to a variety of people in order to be a family game.

    G. Yogini's Google'd Definition
family games are usually meant for the young members of a family. They are educational and usually concentrate on stimulating the awareness of the player in a playful but serious way. Rayman 3 is a good example of a family game. The Familygame expression has also been used to refer to, by extension, the casual games.

Cool. Though I don't see why Glitch doesn't fall into this category. I would definitely agree with this definition. But it uses the word 'usually' twice. That means it contends that there's a lot of gray area. Then it goes on to say that casual games are also family games. Glitch is definitely a casual game as well. The definition is just really loose here. It's up for interpretation.

    Lastly,

Quirk's cited Stewart Quote and his definition of a game
"There's not a better way to say [who we're targeting] than people with above average intelligence and sophisticated tastes, in their 20s or early 30s...The intersection of NPR listeners and game players."

To this, I agreed, guys, more than once, is pretty much why I don't feel it's safe to consider the game as a family game. However, definition aside, the game still does appeal to a wide audience whether Stewart intended for it to or not. Let me find the ages thread.

    http://beta.glitch.com/forum/general/2736/page2/#reply-19081

The age group Stewart aimed for? 20 somethings. Yet his game appeals to a wide, wide age range. Additionally, the 'D' range was the most populated. So, family game status is depending on whether or not Stewart and Co decide to change their marketing strategy. We shall see. Currently, Quirk mentioned that there *must* be some marketing or we wouldn't have found the game. So, I guess, let me rephrase, when they launch their bigger marketing strategy. But of note, I actually found this game by searching Stewart Butterfield. So, I still haven't seen any marketing for it myself.

    Moving on...

Paraphrasing Quirk's requirements. But these are accurate.
    1-Limited # of Players
    2-Wide Audience
    3-Marketed as a Family Game
    4-Encourages co-operation and good-hearted competition

These are good reasons, and I said that once if not twice. We both even agree that one requirement should be a wide audience. But, where we disagree is that a game can't have 'limiting' factors within it to have sub family games within. Therefore, paraphrasing, Quirk says, if the entire game isn't family oriented, no aspect of the game is truly a family game. We disagree on this, and I showed my videos of WoW families, and things, and I feel that you can take a subset of a game and have a family experience. Does that sound fair, Quirk? If you're still reading. I hope it is a fair assessment. At least, it shows that I understand his point of view. Nextly, he says he wasn't sure about items 2 and 4 and whether or not they apply to Glitch. Well, I hope the age chart shows that it fulfills 2. The item #4, that ones seems pretty self-evident, but I agree that there isn't enough team-play to really send that message home. So, I think time will tell on items 1, 3, and 4.

If I missed anything, please post it.

Now, I realize this is ad nauseum, but you guys are gluttens for it for some reason. My reasoning had one aspect to it. That is, that the game targets a wide audience. Mind you, it doesn't really matter if this fits a definition of a family game or not. Because the intent was that because of a wide audience (which Glitch has, and probably will have after release), we should probably not use language in GC/LC. Paraphrasing, but Stewart said we do not have the right to freedom of speech, and that we shouldn't use language wilnil. This idea has nothing to do with whether or not it is a family game. It has everything to do with the eclectic bunch that reads GC/LC. What's interesting, is there are so many people in this thread that agree GC should be clean, but for some reason are against me. I've been pretty fair and polite. You guys are the ones being pretty rude if you ask me. Of note, I don't really care. I just don't get it. I don't really see why it's fair that you are even allowed to do it. Any other message board, and you all would have received warnings and possibly bannings.

Of note, the only reason I mentioned it as a family game is because I would say, 'Hey this is a family game. Watch your language" in response to someone cussing in GC. To me, it seems self-evident that it is a family game. But, whether not it is a family game is irrelevant. Whether or not Stewart is aiming his audience toward pseudo-intellectual 20 somethings, there are people in GC who prefer to keep it clean. I'm not telling or censoring. Never was. In none of my posts was I ever telling people to do anything. I only ever plead/asked/requested. So, that was the whole point. That because of 'here's a decent reason of why the game might be family oriented, we should probably refrain from using language.'

That's it guys. If you don't agree, that's cool. Would I prefer if everyone agreed. But oh well. It ultimately doesn't matter. And as many others have said, GC for the most part is clean. I only started this thread because every time I say 'Hey this is a Family Game, watch your language' GC turns into a long discussion of whether or not the game is a family game and whether or not we should use language in it. So I just wanted to settle it. What was my conclusion? It wont' be settled (as many others have said, including myself on the first page), and that I won't call it a family game. Instead, I'm going to say, "hey this is public chat, watch your language.' Cool? Cool.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I look forward to seeing you in game.

Oh and Flask, I'm just chatting with a friend who is not on Glitch and he suggested that we be a nekid marching band.  I know that would go against your outfit ideas, but I think it might be a good idea if we can't get everyone to agree on the uniforms!

  • You never answered my questions.  That is poop.

I'm going back to my original idea: You tell me to censor my language because I am in a "public" chat, and I will dramatically increase my language to obscure words that you will have to look up in order to know whether you are offended or not.

Nannying and requesting censorship when the chats are actually really clean (from what I've seen) is not cool.

    I'm done being serious now.

    - "We shouldn't use language wilnil"
    - "Glitch really is a solo game right now."
    - "the game is for people who are pseudo-intellectuals. Adult or not."
    - "[on WoW] You can stick to the more intimate activities and just do those with your family"
    - Jackoff really means jerk, and ass really means donkey.
    - "Quirk pretty much found the nail in the coffin."
    - The word "usually" means "a lot of gray area"
    -  If you think Mr. Dawgg isn't using high levels of reason "you must have a different definition of reason."

  • Eliza, I stopped considering your post because you said multiple times it was your personal opinion. You even italicised it. Also, I've answered your questions in other posts, but I'll reiterate for you.

" I reiterate: If you are not calling for any kind of censorship, what do you want?  You do not have, nor like children.  Why do you care?"

I have said many times that I am simply requesting that people refrain. I felt I had good reason to request this, but I guess you guys dont' agree. I can still request it.

I don't really care all that much. As others have said, GC for the most part is pretty clean. Every time I say 'this is a family game, watch your language' to someone who curses in GC, this long discussion starts on whether or not the game is a family game. I just wanted to settle it. That's all.

Also, I agree with you that simply playing a game together as a family does not a family game make. But, I felt it was self-evident that the game appeals to a family. Graphically, content-wise, to me at least, it seems like it appeals to many different people. For the typical family, I think it could appeal to everyone in the family. There's a bit of something for everyone. So, I thought your only point of concern for Glitch was that it wasn't played near one another. I provided the possibility that it could be played near one another. But, apparently you do not feel that the game appeals to a wide audience. That's cool. Your opinion as you pointed out. Fortunately for my case, the fact is that the game does appeal to a wide range of ages. See the age thread. http://beta.glitch.com/forum/general/2736/page2/#reply-19081

Thank you Eliza. I wasn't trying to frustrate you. Be cool. I'm not going against you for the sake of. I'm just an opinionated, matter-of-fact person. I also consider this 'my' thread because I started it. I feel it's my responsibility to keep the thread going in a particular direction. I say this because there are clearly no mods here. • Ooloi, here is my response to all of your posts.

"I think there are two fundamental questions underlying this debate:
Should people in Glitch be polite to one another? and
What is it to be polite?
(Most folks who have posted here, including Mr. Dawgg, speak against actually forcing anybody to be polite.)"

They definitely underly it, but I didn't reply to these because they weren't directly what I was talking about.

"Some people are arguing that it's rude to say words like "fuck." Others argue that it's rude to tell people to change their behavior. "

    Spot on.

"Glitch is unrated. That's the way it is. We can argue about what it ought to be, but what it is is an unrated game (and being an anarchist, I hope it will remain so). With neither a rating system nor anybody authorized to enforce one, what any other criteria should be is a matter of opinion. "

I agree for the most part. But we can objectively define things and try to fit it into that box. That's how I am. That's how I approach things sometimes. But, at the same time, I acknowledge that there are many right answers and that there is always gray area.

"The only criterium for "family game" status that makes sense to me is how the company positions the game. I've seen two pieces of marketing: the Web site and the wait-your-way video, www.youtube.com/user/Glitch... . Neither makes any mention of it being a family game, as far as I can recall. So it's not a family game. Mr. Dawgg is asking TS to say what the game isn't; TS is saying what the game is. "

No where do family films openly state that they're family films. I've yet to see an ad for a chick flick say it's a chick flick. Heck, the new term 'romcom' doesn't appear in advertising ever. We can still use these general concepts to identify something. When I say a movie is a romcom, people know what I'm talking about. Also, I agree that the game isn't a typical 'family' experience. I never really thought that. I mostly just used 'family game' in general/subjectively. "This is a family game, watch your language." Only til this thread did I really try to push the point home in an objective fashion. I felt I had a pretty good working definition, but oh well. It doesn't really matter if we call it a family game or not. The fact is, as the age thread shows, and as obviousness? shows, a lot of different people play this game. As such, we should watch our language in public chats.

"Also, that doesn't mean they're trying to exclude families, or anyone else outside the target audience. It most likely means they don't have tons of money to spend on international advertising, so it makes sense to gear the game toward a largely untapped audience and narrowly (and more cheaply) market to them."

As with my discussion with Quirk. We haven't seen their larger marketing campaign yet. I don't see why they would start advertising a game before it's done. Time will tell. I don't know if they will market it toward families or not. I am inclined to think they will not based on their current marketing (or lack thereof) and what Stewart said about his target audience being 20 something pseudo-intellectuals.

"As to the game itself, my experience suggests that the audience it mostly attracts is people who like to play easy games with a witty and sometimes intellectual bent, and who like to have intelligent conversations while they're doing it. Additionally, many make reference to adult responsibilities, enough that I suspect the majority to be adults, young or otherwise."

To this, I say wait til the free to play masses come. I (and others) predict the entire Glitch culture will change.

"It seems the age of the alpha testers skewed a little higher than the target mentioned in that article wherever the heck it was above. beta.glitch.com/forum/gener...

I wonder where the betas fall."

We both posted the same post. I actually went ahead and linked directly to the post that shows a count of the ages. I wasn't aware that was in the Alpha days. But, perhaps it has changed. Perhaps another age thread is in order. But, I would imagine that it would get very similar results.

Thanks ooloi for your replies. I hope that you reply and do not think I'm being rude or overly stubborn or otherwise impolite. I try to be fair in my replies. Thanks again.

When I feel like that, and I must say I'm not sure about that either, I can't be too happy about making fun of him.

Probably just a moment of weakness from me.

ETA: You see? While I was writing this, we just got a new wall of text from Mr. Dawgg. It's like life in a parallel universe. And now I stop. But I do want to go see the marching band, of course.

  • Mr. Dawgg:
"I don't really care all that much"
*writes monstrous, poorly-researched essays on "families" and "language"*

As far as this game targeting "a wide audience," I would liken Glitch to a bottle of Jägermeister. Jäger tastes like licorice, and therefore could attract a wide audience, including families. Some members of the family may be offended by the alcohol content of Jager, and apparently in Mr. Dawgg's world there is no such thing as "parental supervision" in a family. I propose, therefore, not that the alcoholists at Jägermeister remove the alcohol from their beverage, but that we all take care to filter it out ourselves, just in case there might be families around. I think we can all agree that this is a reasonable request.

In conclusion: you're wrong that this issue "can't be settled." It has been firmly settled against you. It is incredible to me that you don't understand that the defining characteristic of a "family" in the context of "family game" or "family values" is the presence of CHILDREN, and that when Stoot and anyone else you ask says "this is not a game for kids," the assumption is that adults have the strength, courage, and mental fortitude to withstand the torrent of abuse unleashed by consecutive strings of characters like "fuck" or "shit".

  • Capablanca, your definition includes Kids. Mine doesn't. All families have young children at some point, but not all families have young children all the time. If we go by the age that kids can even play games... 8? 10? and up, there's actually less likelihood that a family unit would have a game playing young child. That's why I was saying we should engineer our language to be young adult. 8-12? or 13-17? Same range. Game playing families, then, do not have to have 8-12 kids in them at all. I've shown a video where that was the case. I know personally of two families that play WoW exactly like in that video. They play on a LAN and it's a family experience.

  • Not all families have young adults all the time.

If you want me to engineer my language to be young adult, then you're in for a shock.  The young adults I come in contact with these days have a much cruder and more limited vocabulary than I do.

  • I agree WindBorn. But Family Game doesn't mean the same as Kid Game. That was my point.

Also, that doesn't mean we should assume all young adults are like that.
