A new idea for player crafted honey

The desire for Glitchen created (not vender bought) honey is long-desired. However, right now honey also functions as a currant sink, at 10c each. So any method of generating honey needs to be carefully balanced to not inject too many currants. In other words, it cannot be hugely profitable. What I'm proposing will not be very feasible for new players, so at least in the beginning honey would remain available at vendors.

If honey was straight harvestable item, I think it would be too profitable. So what I think would work well is having a method to "brew" rather than harvest, very similar to the hooch mechanic. Using a new type of still (e.g. a beehive), raw materials could then be turned into honey, turning out 1 honey for every 6c worth of herbs or 10c worth of grain.

* Purchasing the beehive would make for an upfront currant sink
* Beehives need honeycombs, which can be bought, preserving some degree of a currant sink, or
* Honeycombs can be made, using paper as a raw material, in a paper press
* Operation of the beehive & paper press could be further gated by a new skill / upgrade card

  • i like the idea of a honey still.

Or if we want a new creature making honey AND still preserve the currant sink, TS could require a process similar to feeding Metal Rods to Sloths for Snails. Players could feed herbs to whichever creature (bees, badgers, honeys bears, honey bunnies, abominable honey yetis, hairless honey cats, etc...) is created and the ooey-gooey honey would wind up in players bags IF and only if they were carrying empty Honey Jars (which players can buy or craft from other materials).

TL:DR I really want a new animal/insect to make honey, but your honey still is the best non-animal/insect idea and +1.

  • oooh, I like it but I thought fireflies could produce the honey, seeing as how they are already in hive like structures and are cute.
    +1
and, since a spigot is not something unimaginable, we could craft spigots or taps to the hives and pour out honey into jars!
I don't care how it is done, really, I just want my honey manufacturing process to start!  I buy so much at a time, like 400 jars.  But, over a short period, it is almost gone and then, poof, no honey left, all used up.

  • TCF - In my mind the concept allows for having a special gating ingredient eg "pollen" - but I am fairly certain the "still" mechanic is the right path.

This is not a dig against the guano or snail mechanics, but both of thoses items have prices 6x to 10x higher than honey.

  • GIANT BEES.  Feed bee flowers, get honey.

  • I'd be happy for any way to get honey that didn't involve a vendor.  A honey still would be like a sugar shack for distilling tree sap down to syrup.

(Hmmmm, would that also allow us to make birch syrup? Probably not, as our stills don't let us make beer.)

  • I don't know that a 10 c purchase could ever really be a currant sink. Thats hardly very much.

The reason I want vendor-only recources to go away is that I want vendors to go away. Eventually completely go away if possible. The world of Ur could be so much more interesting if more self contained.

I woul prefer animal crafted honey. Like real honey. Maybe bees that we have to grow flowers for. Or since this is Glitch, it could be made out of the toe-jam from platypuses.

  • Ok, between Dorgan and Pascale this thread has really jumped the shark.

And jumping on sharks to harvest Salmon belongs in an entirely different thread!!!

  • I second the idea for Jumping Sharks. This game definitely needs sharks that jump.

  • Actually, I like the idea of getting honey by feeding herbs to ... HONEY BADGERS.  It's all about the badgers.

  • I support any and all ways to get the last of the vendor purchased items into the game as craftable, such as olive oil, dressing, honey - and I do like the idea of distilling honey or even feeding flowers to honey badgers.

    Down with vendors!

  • +1 for feeding flowers to bees.

    Or feeding flowers to fireflies.

Or "shaking" flowers for pollen (alternative to shucking), fed to aforementioned insects.

Or any use of the honey badger.

  • +1 to jumping sharks.

And maybe with Tincturing we could craft a Milk of Amnesia.

Aside from putting you to sleep and causing memory loss, Milk of Amnesia also has other more mysterious effects.

Imbibe the tincture. When you awake your pants are filled with Honey. You have no idea how it got there. Maybe there were animals involved? Bees? Honey Bears?  Honey Hyenas? You don't want to know.  And thanks to Milk of Amnesia, you never will.

Milk of Amnesia also functions as a currant sink since you'll either be needing A) lots of new pants or B) the introduction of something new at Hardware and Tool Vendors: Washing Machines.
