Status Updates On Home Page

Am I the only one who doesn't enjoy the status update things on the home page?  I guess it would be ok if it was formatted differently so it wasn't like a weird chat system, but basically each time I log on I see a bunch of messages that make no sense because I am not friends with the person that a friend of mine is responding too, and I find myself trying to sort through who is saying what, the whole thing is quite confusing and I don't really like how it is set up.  I know a lot of people use it a lot and I assume they like it if they are using it, but does anyone agree with me?

Like I said, it's just become a really weird chat system that only makes sense to the few people that are having conversations on there, and a lot of times it just ends up making me feel left out cause I have no idea what everyone is talking about!

  • @Laurali....it is possible to overcome insecurity...I pray you can learn to trust and be at peace.
Since I have friends here in the game I enjoy the HomePage tremendously, specially when the game is down. You can  post something knowing it will reach your buddies. Glitch is such a supportive place. Laurali, may you find solace here. We are all in this game of Life (Glitch) together.

  • You should submit this to the ideas forum! I definitely think the Updates could be improved.

  • It's become Twitter. But that's because there's no other good way of communicating while the game is down.

However, there is a chat function on GlitchAddict! (hint, hint!)

  • I agree somewhat. I enjoy using the updates to goof off with friends and share information. But I've felt for a while that we need some kind of mail or PM system outside of the game. the devs don't even have to have it set up for themselves (too much mail would be sent to them!), but a lot of times I have a question or want to make a comment to a specific person that I don't know how to get in contact with otherwise.

  • @Heyoheya..... my fondest desire is to make people laugh....smile, hoot, woot. Laughter is the best medicine and if you can laugh at yourself you have it  made. People have got to start loving themselves... When they don't  they act all strange....May all of you laugh long and hard each day, even if inside you are temporarily crying.

  • A comment:   I just email friends in the game. We are so close that we shares emails and that way can exchange photos, etc...The devs  must be swamped getting this ready to go to press.
An in -game messaging system is bound to happen but first let's just get the game going 24/7.

  • Yes my main problem is that I will log on and see a bunch of people saying "@[random player] OMG no way, I can't believe you said that!" or something similar.  Then I feel the need to scroll through to see what [random player] said and why it's unbelievable.

Oftentimes I'm not even friends with [random player] so then I will never know.  It has become Twitter, but a much worse version because you can't stalk celebrities or hot people since we don't know how people even look (no pictures).  And it's not really a status anymore either, as most people use their status to message other players.  Instead of "terrible day, got into a car accident #oops!" it's more like "@[random player]: at least you weren't in MY car today"

And I feel the need to add: somebody somewhere should make a username RandomPlayer.

  • If it's becoming twitter, then do what twitter does. Hide replies to people I'm not friends with.

  • I sometimes find it hard to figure out who is talking about what when part of the conversation(s) is with someone not on my Friends list.  If it is interesting enough to me, I add them to my list so I can follow the conversation.  If you don't like it, just ignore it.

  • I do ignore it, but it would be nice if changes were made to make it easier for everyone to use so that everyone will have a chance to communicate with each other and not just the people who are always checking it and friends with everyone.

  • I totally agree, I think it should just be status updates for the game, not a twitter feed. Like you said, I don't know half the people they are talking too, so why should I need to read it! :)

  • I do to find it hard, say If i don't come online for a little and I responded to a friend and come back and find hundreds of convos. It is hard to scroll through them all to find responses, also I agree how it takes some effort to find out who is talking to who and what their saying, etc. Don't get me wrong I love the chats and such, but I do think It could use some improvements! :)

  • I used to be frustrated with the half-conversations. But then I decided to just add the other half. :) I add anybody mentioned in a @ in a status so I can see their part of the conversation. So far, everybody's been nice and added me back. So, now I have a whole bunch more people to talk to.

But yah, the status thing could use some updating. It would be nice to have a tab where you can see any @ mentions of you. Sometimes people try to tell me something and I miss it because it scrolls off the page.

  • @Laurali, I ignore the status updates, because I never have any idea what's going on! I think this could definitely be improved, so that we don't automatically get a flood of EVERYTHING that you and I and probably others want to ignore. However, those who do want the everything need to still be able to get it.

I mentioned this earlier, but I'll ask again... Have you brought this up in the Ideas Forum?
Posted 16 months ago by Heyoheya Subscriber! | Permalink
  • No I haven't, since I don't use the status updates very often I am still not exactly sure how they work or whether I am just not understanding them.  I always like to see what other people have to say about things before I make my own decisions
Posted 16 months ago by Laurali Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It's weird to only get half of the conversation, but all social platforms do that. I think the status tool itself was supposed to be only a status... I think the users started making it w chatting tool. That said, I think what is needed is a one-to-one communication tool for people or small group convos (I hate getting 1/2 of the convo too).

I hope that after the game is finished first and my Glitch to stops running to the edges of the screen, a chat module is added.

  • @Spellbound, you may have already found help for your Glitch running in one direction, but when I emailed support about my Glitch doing the same thing, this is what I got back:

"When your player is stuck moving in one direction, hit the arrow that matches that direction. This is a Flash bug which ignores when you have let go of that key. Pressing it again should fix it. In a pinch, reload the page. I hope this helps you in the future :-)."

Sorry, off topic to this conversation, but I've been plagued by this as well, and I wanted to help! :)

  • Yes that happens to me too!!  I am sure it will forever happen because this is not the only game I've played where this problem has occurred for me.

The thing that worries me the most is this same format has been rumored to replace global chat, and if this is the replacement in the form it is currently in, I see a LOT of problems in the future
Posted 16 months ago by Laurali Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Oh no! I don't want anything to replace Global Chat! I keep it open constantly (except last test when people started talking about politics/healthcare/shooting animals... what??) when I'm playing. I offer help, receive help, give away stuff I don't need, and take advantage of offers of freebie goods I can't get yet!

Global Chat is the bomb dot com!
Posted 16 months ago by Heyoheya Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The devs have already said that when beta is over and the game goes live, Global Chat will be no more.  BUT, do not despair!!  A Group was created, called Global Chat 2.0 for the sole purpose of filling this void.

Won't be quite so easy for brand new players to find, 'cause they'll have to learn how to join groups, but we can all help point the way!
Posted 16 months ago by Pirate Apples Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It will be hard to point players in the right direction without spamming.  It will be very hard for new players to understand what groups are much less find Global Chat 2.0 if they are still trying to figure out the game.  I love the idea of the group and I will join, but I'm worried any groups we create now (or even after launch) will just become very exclusive and cause new players to feel left out.

  • Yeah I don't enjoy how the status updates have become like Twitter. I hope they add offline private messaging.
