[ingame activity] Weekly Market in Groddle Meadow, Ur

ETA: (Edited to add): The next post was made by me on Friday, 8 July 2011. IT is a bit outdated. But the idea still stands, and someone needs to pull the cart (I have proven to be terrible at it. Ideas: yes. Doing it? No. (Sorry, I'm a manager/coach, I don't do stuff, I only tell others what to do/what they can do :P)

Next test I want to organize a market.
Street: not yet known. (Gregarious Grange?)
Day: 2nd day of next test (so there is some time to prepare) (Days will be set once game goes live)
Time: all day (due to different timezones).

Markets idea:
Each day of the week a market in a different area.

Everyone is welcome to come and sell and buy stuff. Selling stuff is sort of done the old fashion way of shouting about your wares and offers.
It can be as small as two persons selling stuffon half a street, but if it get's bigger we'll use more streets.
It would be nice if we can make a calender for it where sellers can fill in what they sell (in general terms, no details) and what times they'll be there.

Once glitch is live, we should keep it going a bit so word goes round. Leave notes with the locations and dates of the market. (And also an activity calender on the forum, for the time being a thread in which the first post is updated/edited with upcoming events.)

I'd like to point you also out to the following groups for maybe a bit of coördination or ideas between sellers:
-Chef's Guild of Glitch(for the foodstands)
-Glitch Garden Club (for the vegetable and herb stands)

Are there more groups which could be usefull to adress here? Drinks, tinkerers....
I do hope there will also be lots of food stands, and maybe even a street musician. Tinkerers offering their services, as well as poets who can write poems for you. A flourist (haven't been here this last test so don't know about the new additions yet) . It could turn out as a tiny fair....

Who would like this?

  • I think it's a good idea.  If the game gets player-owned stores, this could be a nice companion to it.  I just mentioned to in-game stores because it would be nice if it was a little more organized r than people just shouting and leaving notes.  It would be cool with each day being a different theme.

  • I think this is a wonderful idea. I would think keeping the fair at a subway hub or less than two streets from one would be a great help to those wanting to participate.

  • Miriamele! Are you reading my mind?!?

I was thinking last night that I would love to have festivals/carnivals/markets as a feature. Love it!

  • I like this idea!

    Spi-NACH, getcha spi-NACH!

  • It will be chaotic mayhem, with glitches shouting back and forth, jumping up and down and foaming at the mouth, like a bustling, spinach and no-no fueled glitchian stock exchange.

    Sounds wonderful, I'm in :)

  • I'd be willing to write menus and price lists on paper you could put at your feet, if anyone wants to do that instead of yelling.

  • @ Homura: I do like the chaoticness of the market, but for those who don't like markets the stores could be nice. Best options ofcourse would be movable stores, really more like a market. That way you can go to the customer too instead of the other way around, and I foresee blossoming trades at the hotspots of the moment (festivals, parties, carnival, new streetbuilding etc).

@ Serenity: That's what I figured too, so I suggest the first one is at Gregarious Grange. We'll go annoy the lizards a bit :P

@ G33kgurrl: hehe was just because someone asked in a group if people made money with their profession via the auction house. I am not interested in cash, and it got me thinking of getting the trading closer to social interaction then the cold, unpersonal auction house.

@ Jasbo & The Cat Face: Indeed chaotic mayhem, but in a positive way! Maybe Ill finally learn the trade of haggling (haggeling?hagling?)

@ A Magical Unicorn: great :) but not only end products could be sold, I am also thinking of a vendor who sells animal products (meat, milk, butter, eggs), I'm sure there will be demand for that too.

@ Nutmeg Botwin: Flowers would be great :) Although I don't think you should put your wares out in front of you, keep em in your bags and advertise!

@ Lilith: Great idea! And spreading the word about it with notes through the world will help too :)
Heh, for festivals you could even make coupons, that would keep penpersonshipmasters busy for quite a while.

I do need some help to keep this going once the game goes live (also in beta) because I know I'd slack on my own :P But seeing the positive replies I think that would be no problem. Only organizing there needs to be is someone picking a place, and once there's a routine that isn't even needed. Then all it needs is players being there :)

  • Maybe now that glitch finally has a big enough player base and interest such as this in trading, they can bring back the market hall we had in alpha. The big, cavernous, empty market hall that got no traffic might have a chance now.

  • @miriamle, my suggestion was envisioning selling not just products, but your skills, ie need a tool repaired? need something smelted? need a powder made? etc

i'm picturing the ability to go to a one stop market, pick up the supplies you need and take them to an artisan that has the higher specialty skills you need available. (or the artisan can pick up the supplies needed to craft items and charge appropriately)

ie. I can't craft my own flaming humbabas, but until I can, I'd love to pay someone for their ability to make them, rather than pay out the nose through the auction house.

  • Music. We need music!!

And I would love to have a story-telling circle. So we can weave a brilliant tapestry of history and lore...

  • I'm totally in--sounds like a great time! I'd much rather sell/trade my extra produce in a social market than through the auctions.

  • This is a great idea.. Lets give everyone a couple of days to "stock up" so we can have plenty of goods to trade or sell. I hope the crocks don't decide we need Peddler Permits! Would love it if we could have "moveable" market stands where we could post what we have on a sign.

  • I love this idea, and think player initiated activities like this are great. However, can I recommend that you put this one street away from any subways/metros, please?  Sometimes folks are just trying to get to a location quickly if they don't have teleportation, and the potential for lag for some players with this many folks on a street that is already pretty busy could be a bit of a turn off, especially for newer players. Also, since GG is a key location for folks that need to visit the Bureaucratic Hall and get various papers early in the game already, I understand this may be of interest to generate traffic to the market/vendors, but it seems like it could just slow down things on that street in particular.
Posted 17 months ago by b3achy Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Princess Fi: I think the Peddler Permits are great idea.  That would be encourage players to obtain it for achievement or whatever... so, we would have more players participate the Market Fair that way, eh?

@b3achy: I disagree on stay away from transit stations. The game is for a community after all. It's accessible and more visible of event. Don't worry, it's an one-day event.

I think Saturdays is best ideal.

  • I dont mean to be a downer but why would this be more successful than auctioning goods?

Transportability & the amount of people you are able to sell to is lessened, and its less beneficial time wise also.

I'm all for player run communities but I guess I dont understand a player run market?

  • +1
lovely idea would love to see work!
Posted 17 months ago by Sayuri Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Taylor Swift: It's not about success or failure. It is an experiment social platform, which I believe stoot mentioned it somewhere.
Posted 17 months ago by Milolin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Taylor: The big difference is the ability to haggle and trade. I have a ginormous vegetable garden and would much rather trade veggies for herbs than try to find them on auction. It's also just more fun to do something that requires actual player to player action (for me, anyway. I know some people are more solitary players).
Posted 17 months ago by Sheepy Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Taylor: indeed it's not the most efficient way to earn currants, but it's not about earning currants (as fast or efficient as possible).
It's about the social interaction, a bit or roleplaying maybe, getting to know people.
It's just another reason or way to get people to meet ingame and start talking. It can be hard to just walk up to a total stranger and start a conversation, at least on a market you have a Reason to start talking and you have a Subject, and before you know it you have a nice Conversation and a new Friend.

It is not meant as a replacement of the auction house, it's more meant as a social interaction.
