Wood seems like it would be the backbone of all building and development, but in this game it is used solely for food purposes. It seems logical that the union of wooden planks and the earth blocks (that are created through block-making) would be used for architectural purposes. In fact, there could also be a separate skill called "Construction" that would be essential for any serious homeowner. The following is a collaboration of both my ideas and other ideas that I have read in the forum for alternative uses for things that should be available to those with the Construction skill.
1. Greenhouses.
With planks and earth blocks, Glitches would be able to build a small building about the size of an outhouse or like the doors to a storm cellar (think Wizard of Oz.) The building could be entered and it would open a separate screen that would be an indoor garden. The one shaped like an outhouse would open to additional gardening plots that grew regular vegetables. The storm cellar entrance would be used to grow herbs, since many people have voiced their concerns about wanting to be able to grow both types of crops. (See: www.glitch.com/forum/ideas/...
These greenhouses could be expanded over time using even more planks and earth blocks to be able to hold even more plots.
2. Beehives
I came across a thread on the forum recently that advocated the inclusion of beekeeping in this game. (See: www.glitch.com/forum/ideas/...; I thought it was a great idea, but making an entire skill for beekeeping seemed excessive to me. However, many of the cooking recipes that I frequently make require the purchase of honey from grocery vendors. I would love to be able to construct a beehive in my own backyard where I could retrieve honey once or twice a day (depending on Gardening skill level.)
3. Shrines
Although shrines are obviously plentiful in the land of Glitch, it would be nice to be able to construct and deconstruct one at a time in your own backyard. (See: www.glitch.com/forum/ideas/...; However, I am not sure about the idea of creating an imbalance of favor that this user suggested in that thread. I think that it should be treated just as any other shrine, and when the homeowner decides to construct a shrine to a different giant, the original shrine must be deconstructed as well.
4. Furniture
I'm sure that furniture is already in the plans by the game developers, but it is still worth mentioning in this post. (See: www.glitch.com/forum/ideas/...; I'm not sure about all of the different decorative things that the other user mentioned, but a bed would be incredibly nice. The bed would serve to restore energy but would have a limited number of uses each day. The amount of time needed to restore energy all the way to full capacity would depend on the Glitch's Meditation skill level.
Additional suggestions are welcome.
