It wouldn't be so tough to move items around if you could move an item to another item and just have them switch spots... or if it were easier to OPEN the bags you had. Why do I have to click the tiny bar on the left of each bag to open it. Why can't I just CLICK THE BAG and have it open?
sugarj, most things I acquire are not picked up off the ground, they're bought from vendors or harvested from trees, rocks, and holes in the ground, or delivered by flying frogs, or made from other things. None of those allow me to drag it where it's going.
The big thing is: if it goes into the open bag, you know where it went. You don't have to pick through various and sundry sorted bags trying to find the odd bit out.
If I might add, it would be nice to see a little image of the item float above the bag and shrink into it. I'm not sure if I explained it well, but many other mmo's have a similar feature, just so you know which bag it went into.
@Bashere: It does happen for a lot of things, but not everything.
Specifically, there's no animation for food and drinks going into your bags after they've been made, or at least not for some food and drink. Before I wrote this, I made some Orange Juice just to make sure I remembered this correctly - there wasn't any animation.
I do not want things to default to my open bag. At all. This is a tough one for the devs as there is far from universal agreement on what is the right way to load new items. Search through the ideas forums and you will see half a dozen other ideas for the "best way" to load new items.
@ Bashere Yeah your right it does happen with some things, but I had crafting in mind specifically when I mentioned that. I often make food several stacks at a time and it get distributed randomly through my bags wherever it can find a spot. I've found a few misplaced meals in bags later on
So the problem is more that we need multiple different ways to arrange bags, then?
Idea: give bags a category. Just look at the categories we have right now to see the options: food, herdkeeping supplies, tools, etc. More than one bag can have the same category (i.e. three Food bags), or one bag can be given more than one category (Mining and Drinks, for example). Have a list of checkboxes, select whatever you want for that bag, or check "Select None" to have the bag accept any incoming item.
The only problem I forsee is if the glitch has a type for every bag, their inventory is otherwise full, and a new item comes in that does not fit that bag type.
-----Solution A: Drop the item.
-----Solution B: Place the item in the first open bag, with a red border around the item's inventory space, and an error message in its item dialog saying "there was no other place to put this." When a spot frees up for that item, reorganize it.
