What factors affect patch lifetimes on home streets?

I know there's already been another topic that seemed to be on this topic (it wasn't).

Has anyone figured out what affects patch lifetimes, preferably with an eye to making those lifetimes go by as fast as possible?

I know how gardens work, every time you harvest (and no other action), a fixed percentage (that goes down as you re-re-restore the garden) is taken off the lifetime.

But I haven't really figured out what causes life loss in a patch...

Thanks in advance,

P.S. I'm fairly sure I got "affect" right above. If not, please accept this link as proof that I did my best, and understand that further harping on this issue is
as likely to help me understand
as yelling at your bunny rabbit
is likely to get it to stop pooping
on you when you're cuddling it
and your cat together.

  • Interacting with the patch simply by tending and digging is SLOW. Interacting with a planted tree will deplete the patch but I don't know the rate.

I'm thinking I might start some controlled tests in my backyard to see if all actions (pet&water vs p,w&harvest) are treated as an equal "use")

  • The garden's lifespan gets shorter every time it is restored? That sucks, if so. I hope it isn't so, because, well... it sucks.

  • No, it gets longer every time it is restored.

  • From what I've seen with patches (which don't seem to count for the 5x and 20x badges, or never did for me) harvesting from trees is what takes down their lifespan the most. Watering and petting may do some, but primarily its harvesting. Super harvests seem to take out a good chunk of life. In a backyard you can try testing it if you'd like.

  • Whew! Thanks, Little Miss Giggles. I guess I misunderstood the OP. That's a relief!

  • I"m not sure... I know some trees seem to effect the lifespan differently.  For example, I planted every tree type at the same time in my backyard.  My eggplant went quickly, very.  So at some point I decided that I'd let my patches die, then poison the trees so that I could put trees out front and leave my backyard for gardening.  Letting the plots expire seemed easier than trying to obtain 7 WotD.  So I killed off the eggplant. Then spice, and gas, and eventually bubbles (the wood tree was in there somewhere).  Finally I was left with fruit and beans.  Water, pet, harvest x2, repeat... day after day... they just wouldn't expire...... I finally poisoned the trees and used WotD on the plots 'cause I got tired of waiting.

All these trees were planted at the about the same time, maybe fruit and bubbles being a couple gamedays after the others due to resources.  I've had several eggplants and they've all depleted their plot MUCH faster than the others.
