Up arrow no longer works instead of Enter (update: they mostly restored it)

You used to be able to use the up arrow to select items, instead of hitting the Enter key. (Note that inside a menu, the arrows always move you around the menu options, both then and now.)  Many of us got used to using this.  In particular, I find it much more natural than hitting Enter.  Some people using wasd for arrows apparently liked it a lot too.

This has now been (intentionally) disabled.  I'm grumpy about it.  Kevbob sent me to the forums to be grumpy.  Here we are.

  • I love the fact that I can now use the arrow keys to go down the rows in my menu instead of having to go all of the row before being able to go up or down!! TY!!

  • Wow, this whole issue came and went before i could respond! ^^; otoh, I can see the utility of the up arrow when chasing butterflies and for people without long gymnastic fingers. Of course, I actually asked for an option to disable up arrow Enter previously, because I've been using the gamepad to play on my laptop more comfortably.*  I still think it's a good tradeoff, personally, so i will again suggest it as an option. Sure options pages can be a slippery slope and make tutorial writing hellish, i know, but it's not as though Glitch Final will be purely Applesque. After all, we already have an options page for things like email notifications. Trust me, the Cult of Steve knows nothing about game design... ;)

*Edit:  To make it clear, up arrow Enter is annoying on many gamepads because it can be difficult to avoid pressing up all the time when you're jumping about.  I can get used to it, though.  I think I'll be buying a new, more PS3-ish gamepad soon for our house to make things easier (and so we can both play from our laptops hehehe).

This maybe gives people the best of both worlds, where in most cases the up key behaves as it used to, but you don't get frustrated in Game of Thrones and the like when trying to get on ladders around lots of people.

I often get frustrated in Game of Thrones because of all those ladders Varys makes me climb. Doesn't he know how difficult that is for a small person?!

  • Isn't there some way to make this a toggle option? It would be nice to see this added as well as a "Bloop sound when someone in chat sends a message?" toggle.

  • I'm happy with how it is now, thanks eric, and thanks stoot for keeping this thing simple.

  • stoot, you (and Dr. Schwartz) are indeed right about too many choices being paralyzing and detrimental. This concept has been on my mind a lot, since reading a recent NYT article on selective reduction of twins to singletons. Bioethicist Josephine Johnston wrapped up the dilemma for me with these words:  “In an environment where you can have so many choices, you own the outcome in a way that you wouldn’t have, had the choices not existed. If reduction didn’t exist, women wouldn’t worry that by not reducing, they’re at fault for making life more difficult for their existing kids. In an odd way, having more choices actually places a much greater burden on women, because we become the creators of our circumstance, whereas, before, we were the recipients of them. I’m not saying we should have less choices; I’m saying choices are not always as liberating and empowering as we hope they will be.” (emphasis mine.)

Dr. Schwartz, towards the end of his talk, said something about finding the sweet spot of choice; that it is clear that some choice is better than none, but too much is clearly worse, and we don't yet know how to find that ideal point. Just thinking about the choices you are making regarding Glitch, the decisions that will create the situations for your players to make their own decisions, and trying to calibrate for that mythical sweet spot... well, my hat is off to you.

  • I totally agree. 9_9

Not having the choice to press Enter or Up Arrow will make you happier. You'll get used to it and rue the days when the Up Arrow option filled you with indecision and self-loathing. Trust me. ;p
