Welcome Faunasphere refugees and all new players :)

Welcomes have been touched on in other threads, but I felt it needed it own thread.

It was great to have met so many of you during yesterdays testing! It got a little overwhelming at times in the Help Chat pane, but it was definitely fun! It was hard at times not to ruin the "spirit of exploring" for a new player and give too much away as to how to do / make / find something in-game.

A few things I noticed that was common for many of the Faunasphere players, and this may help:

* Most things in Glitch are easiest to do using the keyboard and NOT the mouse - it seemed when you were using the mouse, the playing window "lost its focus" for you and needed to be clicked within to bring it back into focus. See alpha.glitch.com/help/ for some keyboard shortcuts.

* Use the mini-map in the upper right corner of the screen to help guide you around - you can map routes to your destination, plus see vendor info, etc. listed - it will not teleport you to your destination;

* When an item is visible in either your main storage slots or in an open Storage Bag along the bottom of your screen, click on it to see if it has additional interaction possibilities;

* Also - use The Rock - it's right in the middle top of the screen - it is your "familiar" to help keep track of stuff;

* Joining a Group here on the website has the effect of creating a separate Chat pane in-game; A dedicated FS Group was established by some FS players yesterday here: alpha.glitch.com/groups/RTJ...

* You can change your characters looks via the Vanity: alpha.glitch.com/vanity/ and the Wardrobe: alpha.glitch.com/wardrobe/ (Both of which can be done even when the game is closed);

* If something is not behaving the way you expected it to, the easiest fix in some cases is to simply refresh your browsers page; If your character gets "stuck," try clicking in the window to bring it back into focus or by simply jumping with the spacebar (works great when it seems your character just keeps walking on its own);

* You can't really break anything in-game, so click on / try to combine / interact with everything;

* There no stupid questions - so ask away! I learned a lot when I first started by simply watching the Help Chat pane and questions asked and answers given there;

* Other great resources are the Encyclopedia here ( alpha.glitch.com/encyclopedia/ ), and the unofficial (but sanctioned) game wiki set up and run by alpha testers here: www.glitch-strategy.com/wik... ;

* On Twitter, follow @playglitch and @isglitchopen ; On Facebook, "like" www.facebook.com/playglitch ;

* Also check out the official blog at glitch.com/ - some valuable info can be gleaned there;

Again, welcome to the Glitch community!

  • Thanks so much for the welcome!!!

    I had a blast getting lost and confused yesterday and can't wait to try again!

    I looked thru the encyclopedia earlier.... think I'll go explore wiki.

    Nice to meet you!

  • Thank you so much for the Welcome, I am a Faunasphere Refugee and started playing yesterday. How exciting it was, but very strange to have to learn to use the arrow keys and as an older woman, it's not easy to get out of the habit of using the mouse. I think I could get seriously addicted to Glitch and can't wait to have another go. Please let it be soon, lol.

  • Thanks much for the warm welcome. I for one was SO excited to see you had opened for new testers. I am really impressed with how easy it was to explore and start learning the game. Everyone was nice and helpful. If this first little taste was any indication, I'm going to enjoy this experience. Maybe it's a good thing you're still only open for short spurts....I can see myself getting lost in Glitch meditative state for hours!

    Also, how wonderful that you've made all of us Fauna ex-pats feel so at home.
    Thanks again!

  • Thank you for allowing me to be one of those who got to play for the first time, yesterday...totally in love with this game!
    I was a bit worried to have to use the keyboard to play when the mouse wasn't working it right but then found myself preferring the keyboard over the mouse (very shocking for me :D ) .

    Can hardly wait til we get to do more playing and testing!

  • Thank you so much for having us Fauna bunch join you, we are a special close bonding group. I guess you can say it is the animal in all of us. :)
    Yesterday was a blast learning the ropes. Made me feel like the first week I started in Fauna, that excitement and thrill of quest..
    Thank you again, you all have been more than kind to all of us.

  • Thank you for the warm welcome and the hints. I had a blast getting lost, going to hell (then reading my grave marker) . I hope to have my desktop computer up and running by the time we are allowed to play again as working with the tiny directional arrows on the laptop is a pain in the rear. So many things to do and see here at Glitch. Looking forward to helping build a wonderful game.

  • Likewise to all that's been said, it was a great time and my mind is buzzing with ideas already! I'm pondering which ones to toss out there, I want to read all the back info first and see if these things have been covered....I'm very curious to see how much of the "back story" has been fleshed out. I don't want to compare Glitch to FS, you guys are your own game so it will be a challenge to think of ways to improve the game without trying to remake it into what we just came from. I know I'm very interested in making new friends here outside of our refugee community...we may sort of hang together at first like the timid freshmen we are and we will always have a special bond, but thank you for helping assimilate us into the broader community as well. I know a lot of us were very impressed by the early outreach we got from your community!

  • Thank you so much for the warm welcome, Kaushka!!! It was definately a blast and I'm soooo excited to play again!!! And thanks for all the great information!! I do have one question though. You stated the vendors are also shown on the map? I didn't see them. Can you please clarify how to get them to show up? You're talking about the spirits we buy special items from right? Thanks again!! :D
    Posted 21 months ago by Pinkey Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Pinkey - this is an example of what the mini map will show for vendors and shrines; when you "mouse over" the symbols, it will indicate what type of vendor is there, as well as which shrine is there : img.photobucket.com/albums/...

  • Thanks for the warm welcome. A massive thank you for all the help and patience shown to all us FS Refugees. You must have felt like you were being invaded by aliens. Was a bit mad and very excitable. Looking forward to meeting you all and making some new friends. It's a very sad time for us FS players, and coming here really picked the group up and brought smiles back to our faces. First impressions, looks like you have a great community. Makes the transition into something new a lot easier.

  • I have to agree w/the others, thanks for the very warm welcome. I was excited to get the email with the 'secret code" and played for a while yesterday. At first glance it looks as if the map will be very helpful with lots of good info. I do see the shrines in the different areas and wonder if it's better to pick a Giant (I guess they are the ones the shrines are for) or to try to donate at each shrine.
    As far as learning goes since you pick a skill to learn and then play while the skill is going in the background I wondered if the skill can be learned as long as you are signed in even though you aren't actively playing. I guess these and many more questions will be figured out in the coming play time after the reset.
    Posted 21 months ago by Gizmospooky Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Gizmo, eventually you will want to donate enough at each shrine in order to get a token. The token are connected to the abilities to learn different skills. You can see what Giant is connected to each skill by mousing over each one on the skills page. That is one way you can know which shrines you might want to visit more often.

  • Thanks for welcoming us. I am really excited about testing this game. I had a great time running around not knowing what to do. I think, as you mentioned, that during the first minutes, you may have seen us as a group of freaks, we may have scared some of the locals, when we ALL started greeting each other, chatting right away, and bombarding them with hundreds of questions at the same time.

    I don't really have anything to report. Maybe a bit of lag while changing instances. The game ran softly for me. I think I reloaded 2 or 3 times, but probably it was because I kept trying to use my mouse. My biggest problem was getting used to the keyboard, which I hadn't done in a long time.

    I loved the graphics and the tasks, I enjoyed a lot the garlic/kissing one, it made me laugh a lot. I also enjoyed dying and going to the purgatory. The game is both, fun and funny!

    I had fun, the same kind of fun I had when I started playing FS. And the best part was seeing so many of my friends in there.
    Posted 21 months ago by Couso Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It too a little while to get the hang of but i was definitely making progress after a while. I feel I should apologise to people I seemed to ignore - I hadn't figured how to get the bubbles up. (I'm glad I figured it out). And to the person who offered me some spinach - my slots were full and I hadn't got to the right place to buy a bag yet - also sorted. Actually the working it out and the challenge made it more addictive - I hate not being able to get to the bottom of something!

    Anyway, it was great to see lots of 'more experienced' people dropping by, as well as the excitement of spotting familiar names. I felt like a sightseer in LA with an autograph book at the ready! I think we've since reconfigured our avatars - desperate to get back in already you see!

    I do like to work through things mostly on my own, but it is reassuring to know so many friends old and potentially are new are there.
    Good times ahead :0

  • Hi Glitchers :) Can't thank you enough for welcoming all of us FS Refugees en masse. I had a wonderful time and absolutely LOVE this game and having all of my oh so loverly fauna friends here made it truly a wonderful experience. Was reading some of the update notes and it sounds like we were a great test for the new chat dialogue boxes which held up and performed wonderfully, I can't speak for everyone but I know a great many of us really appreciate having an in game chat like this and having our own group chat window is just above and beyond my wildest dreams. The graphics are absolutely beautiful and the game is hilarious. And it's SOOO big :O I am highly impressed as well with the instantaneousness of the response when one clicks or hovers on things and I can't even imagine how you can make it better. The only bad thing associated with this game is having to wait for a week to do it again :) Thanks again for having us along on this awesome ride !!!

  • Thank you all for being so welcoming! I feel like I've caught a liferaft, after playing yesterday and seeing other fs refugees here. I enjoyed the interesting game play and customizing my wardrobe and "vanity." This seems like it's going to be a great game. It sure felt nice to be exploring everything here!

  • I had a blast exploring the Glitch world yesterday - never thought I'd enjoy squeezing chickens and picking up pig poo as much as I did!!! Um, well, yeah - moving along...

    Seeing so many familiar FS names and receiving a warm welcome from the Glitch community just put the experience over the top. Like many FS refugees, I'm still saddened by the loss of our very special world and community, but the invite and subsequent hospitality from Glitchers helped lift my spirits for the first time in weeks.

    Thanks for welcoming us into your world - we're a nutty bunch, but we're a lot of fun, too! And I have a feeling we're going to fit into the Glitch community jussst fine! ;)

  • Thank you Kaushka for the very warm welcome. I was absolutely befuddled, and thats not hard lol, when i first logged in and started playing. I ended up everywhere and anywhere in the world of Glitch but loved it. Am waiting to see what the housing is like as i really miss that part.
    The only complaint i have so far is those damn butterflies lol Just cant seem to click on the right thing because of the way they move around.
    All in all, love the game and can't wait to get back into it, although i do miss my game partner (hubby CrazyDawg), he was a bit slow joining and missed out.
    Posted 21 months ago by Ehlana Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Ehlana, I read in another post that it is much easier to catch the butterflies using the keyboard. You get underneath a butterfly and hit the space bar to jump then, when the blue (?) outline appears, hit the enter key.

    I didn't catch a single one and am hoping for better luck with this method when the game comes back on.

  • Thanks PA, I was jumping out of my skin..trying to catch them to no avail. Didn't know you had to press enter. Will be on a mission now.

  • Thank you so much for the warm welcome and wonderful advice. I took notes and hope to try out your advice next time the game opens =) I am not going to lie- this game is intimidating to some us FS refugees- but I can remember a time when I felt the same way about dear old FS. =) Very excited to build this great game with all my old & new friends

  • Thanks for the welcome! I haven't been able to play FS for several months because of a couple of surgeries, and when I was finally able to be spending more time online I find out FS is closing down. Was a very sad surprise, that's for sure. It's really weird how you can get so attached to pets that aren't even "real", though when you've spent as much time with them as a lot of us did, they sorta become more than just pixels on a screen.

    But yesterday my spirits were lifted with the discovery of Glitch. Thank you so much for opening this world up to us at the time when a lot of us needed it most. For me, FS was always my escape from everyday issues to a world where there was no stress. From the small amount of time I was able to spend in Glitch yesterday, this will most definitely become my new stress-free haven.

    And sorry to all those I kissed yesterday with my garlic breath!

  • I too am appreciating the warm welcome :) I wanted to pass along a tip I've not seen touched upon anywhere. Whenever you are in the forums or chatting in game, you can click on the players name (under their post or in the player list) and it will bring up their profile page so you can add them to your friends list. You can also just look or even delete them from your list. I can't imagine why you would want to though. Oh and are there any emoticons here? I just love those little smiley guys!

  • As a libertarian, I don't normally address people in collective terms, but all of you from FS do seem to be a quality bunch!

    It's great to hear that so many of you FS refugees are enjoying the game - and don't feel as if it is "us" letting "you" into "our" world: you all are participating early enough in the games development cycle that YOU are helping form the foundations of this new civilization - even if it is only in the imaginations of our 11 benevolent Giants...

  • @Kaushka - Thanks so much for posting the diagram of the map and pointing out the symbols on it which I hadn't noticed. Was planning to start a notebook and try to write down all the areas which vendor is located, lol. This is so awesome and will save alot of work and give me more time to explore and play!! Can't wait until the next test!!! I have a feeling this game will become quite addictive as did FS, maybe even more so since the world is soooo big and there's so much to do. Love it, love it!!

  • Holly, go read this page. I will have to print it out and keep it close the first few weeks. But it tell you keyboard moves. 1 2 3 is emotions.. I never played with keyboard so this is a fun new experienced for me too.

    Great tips here!

  • Thank you for the warm welcome. Yes, us FSers are a huge, strange family. We're very territorial about our love for that game, and we were devastated (I'm pretty sure I speak for the entire family) about the loss of our world. It is so nice to be welcomed into a new world with open arms, and hearts. I know there's going to be a huge learning curve, even for someone like me who grew up with computers (literally!).

    And P.S. Kaushka, I'm a Libertarian, too ;-)
    Posted 21 months ago by Essie Kitten Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Thanks for the warm welcome to your community. It is still your game while we're getting used to it though...but you could be questioning your decision to let us in once we integrate...lol. I'm probably one of the most skeptical ones on if I'll be staying, since some aspects of the game are rather offensive to my belief system. I do appreciate the non-violent nature of the game (unlike all the other battling games out there), so I may just come by to chat with the bunch that seems to be happy here and try to avoid the offensive sections, if that is possible. I'm sad that this game requires so much keyboard interaction, and is so 'flat'/2d for the worlds, vice mouse input friendly and 3d like we were used to in FS. Seems like a major step back in technology/quality. However the breadth of the number of worlds/areas being increased was a nice change for the explorers in our group (though the sizes of most were pretty limited). It'll be an interesting new challenge. I hope you consider us a valued addition, even if we have drastically differing views, and we will be a vocal bunch once we get our feet under us. Thanks again for the opportunity!

  • Oh, b3achy, I'm Buddhist, so you can imagine my reaction to having "God" talking to me. If nothing else, stay to chat here in the forums. So far, this game is the best replacement I've seen out there. Nothing is going to compare to what we had in FS, so I'm trying really hard not to compare. It's like comparing your husband to your first love (unless you're one of those lucky ones who married your first love...) You love them differently. (((Hugs)))

  • Kaushka, thanks bunches for the map link. Looking at It, seems like there is a vendor and shrine on every street. Is this correct?.
    Posted 21 months ago by tweetypie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Almost every street, but not all (this is going to change in the not too distant future: the street spirits will stop selling stuff and vendors will be in or around buildings which are clustered together).

  • I do have a (rather strange, I'm sure :P ) question about the map...will it be color coded?
    The reason I'm asking is because when I was using it during game play, it was rather hard for me to read due to my poor eyesight.
    I think color coding, at least the vendors/street spirits, would help with locating certain things one might be looking for without having to strain the old eyeballs :D :D :D
    Posted 21 months ago by sgjo Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @sgjo - I don't know if color coding are in the current development plans, but you're certainly welcome to make your case for that in the "ideas" forum: alpha.glitch.com/forum/ideas/
    I've made some suggestions there myself about the map.

  • Thank you for the response, Kaushka...I will copy and paste my question over there :)

  • Thanks for the welcome! It didn't take me very long to get acclimated to the game at all and soon I was seeing all sorts of familiar faces and jumping from place to place (literally and figuratively). I sincerely appreciate the attention, en masse, to our FS crew who is in desperation right now and looking for a new home. I think this game's sense of quirky fun appeals to many of our tastes and hopefully many, MANY more of us will be jumping onboard.

  • Thank you for the welcome. I really enjoyed my test session, and it looks like it will be a a great game. I can't really add to the above comments except to say that the timing of this opportunity to play is God-sent, at a time when many of us FS players were getting seriously upset about the end of FS.

  • @b3achy and @sc803: I'm sorry that a few of you are uncomfortable with the imaginary deities in the game, but I don't think a game of this type, where almost everything is done in the spirit of creation and exploration, would not have some sort of deity involved - especially one (or 11 in this case) that would not be offensive to somebody.

    As for the global user "GOD" in the game, it was probably the easiest way that announcements could be made in-game by the developers, both expressing the "collective" that are the 11 imaginary deities, and making "administrative announcements" (i.e., maintenance and server status notifications) while staying within the spirit of the game. I'd rather see a playful announcement from user "GOD" than see "Attention: this is super admin Bob - the game will close in 1 hour. I need to go to the bathroom." In fact, "GOD" isn't even a part of the "back-story" of Glitch, so maybe a more sensitive method of delivering an admin announcement could be effected.

    But whatever you decide - the primary focus of this game is social interaction - so I'm sure I can speak for most of the glitches here in saying we'd love for you to hang around!

  • b3achy: IMHO, the 2-Dness is part of what makes Glitch unique. I rather like the straightforward back-and-forthness.
