Some Home / Butterfly questions...

Hello.

This may seem like a stupid question, and I apologise if so. I own a home in Alakol and ideally I’d like to have between 5 and 10 butterflies in it. So…

-Is there a maximum number of butterflies I can have there, before some die through overcrowding?

-Do they have to be released in the animal pan with the Piggies, or can I have them anywhere within my home? Ideally, I’d like to have them flying about between the trees.

-How many ‘butterfly milkers’ would you suggest? I’ve read somewhere that they can get confused if you put too many down, so I’ve only invested in 2 for now.

  • I don't believe butterflies suffer from overcrowding, but they do have a limited life span.  Before reset it seemed butterflies lasted about 5 days in a home with a milker.  People complained about that, and it may now be tweaked to a longer life span.

You can release butterflies anywhere in your home or garden, but they will fairly quickly migrate to the pen and then stay there.  I wish this would be changed as I'd love to have them flitting around the rest of the house and garden.

I've never been clear on the multiple milker issue.  I know my one milker and 5 butterflies give me more milk than I know what to do with.  I'm not sure just what the optimal strategy is if you want max milk to sell or donate.

  • Thanks for that, Hawkwell. I had no idea that butterflies have a limited lifespan, so that's good to know.

Finally, although they'll gravitate towards the pen, can the milkers be put anywhere in the house, or do they too have to be in the pen? If so, my pen's going to be rather crowded with the feeders and collectors and possibly the milkers!

  • I would assume that the milkers have to be in the pen, as I don't believe the butterflies can leave the pen once they settle into it.  (It's interesting that when a butterfly first emerges it often flutters out of the pen into the rest of the garden.  But it soon returns to the pen and never leaves again.) As far as crowding the pen with hardware, I think you should be able do drop all the pieces on top of one another at the far end of the pen.  When you need to interact with them just walk over to them, hit enter and choose which one you want in the pop-up balloon.  The pop-up tells you how much milk/meat/food is in each piece of hardware, so it's easy to tell which ones need attention.

  • Great idea - I'll be sure to do just that with my pen equipment!

  • Note that the following observations are based on my pre-launch experience. The devs may have tweaked them since then, so it's possible that your experience may vary.

Butterfly Milkers will collect milk regardless of where they are placed in the house. Same goes for meat collectors. You can have as many butterflies as you want. A home with too much butterflies (overcrowded) can make the butterflies sad. Sad butterflies drop to the ground (and complain of overcrowding) and all interaction options are grayed out, except for name/rename. However, adjustments have been made to this mechanic, and I cannot tell how many butterflies are needed now before they complain of overcrowding (or maybe it was removed?).

A butterfly's lifespan seems to depend on the number of milkers you place in your home. I actually had 10 milkers, and my butterflies die out after 3 days. However, the forums have posts that narrate of butterflies that live longer when incubated in a home that has only one or two milkers present.
