Was i really in the wrong?

so i recently started playing glitch when the open beta started and have fallen into an addiction like most other players but i am in the military stationed overseas and have limited amounts of time to play.

i woke up this morning before work a little earlier than usual and thought it was a perfect time to get my glitch on for a little while and i decided to check out the Teal-White key spawn locations.

i proceeded to Keywot whot and there were two individuals there waiting for it to spawn so i joined them and about 30 seconds later it spawns and i managed to grab it, before moving on i decided to inform them it had just been obtained so they wouldnt waste their time and then i took off to try to quickly accomplish some other things.

one of these individuals proceeded to gripe me out and say i stole it from them that they were there first. i explained i did not agree that i had stolen it and that i was not out of line to grab it. they go off on a tangant and even though i disagree i return and give them the key (they continue to badmouth me regardless) then go about my way.

about 10 mins later im at gomen grap waiting for a key to hopefully spawn agian before i have to take off to work and a different individual who i found out was a friend of the first shows up and preceeds to lecture me on how i was wrong and to quote: "when you figure out that you were wrong - then you might turn into a true glitch"

so i ask, was i wrong?

  • Wow that's annoying. And it's not rude if you got the key, especially if you told them you had taken it. Anyone can buy one or wait for another one to spawn again. You can also have people follow you in if it's that important to them.

  • It's just polite really to let the person who's been waiting the longest to have the key. How would you feel if you waited 10-20 minutes for a key only to have someone run in at the last second and grab it? It's a nasty thing to do.

The only exception is if you're aware that the other person had been key farming, it's only fair if each person gets 1 key each rather than having one guy hog all of them and sell them later on.

Other people are making out as though nabbing the key is an ok thing to do, to promote sharing in Glitch! But that's not sharing at all :P I think what we need to do most is be nice to each other and make sure Glitch is an enjoyable experience for everybody.

Don't feel bad about it anyway, just try to be nice :3

  • Most people vying for the triangle teal and white key are cooperative and willing to work with you. I don't have much patience for campers who take the key to sell when other people are there wanting to use it right away to go mine, but if no one else is there, why shouldn't they grab it and auction it? Otherwise it keeps the next key from spawning on schedule. One less key to use.

My usual routine is to check the two spots in GB and the one spot in NI, and if other people are there waiting, I ask if they would be willing to go into AB in a follow-train. If yes, then everyone is happy, it doesn't matter who grabs it, and everyone gets to go mine.

Sometimes I check the spawn spots after a trip to AB, with bulging inventory bags loaded with sparkly. I clearly do not need to get right back into AB that very second. If no one is waiting, I do nab a key so I can let myself and others in next time I visit. If someone IS waiting and they are clearly THERE and not AFK or napping, then I leave (sometimes saying hello and sometimes not, depending on lag). I had my turn, I do not need to be greedy over an item that spawns slowly.

On two occasions I have popped in and found a camper waiting for a key. S/he checked that I was not also a camper then asked if I wanted it. I told them I already had mined and just wanted to be able to enter next time I visited, and both times the camper offered me a key in his or her inventory for free, and each time I did indeed use those keys to let myself and other players into the locked area the next day.

My OPINION is that Glitch strives for cooperative gameplay and sharing, and that actions that are cooperative or promote sharing are more in line with the overall feel and culture of the game. Therefore I choose to wait my turn, to offer to share if I have resources I can spare, work with other players to earn bonuses or fulfill quests, and avoid competitive situations where someone wins and someone loses. If there is a win-win solution, that is the one I choose.

Not everyone is going to play the say way I do, and there will no doubt be unpleasant / selfish / clueless / uninformed people who snipe keys deliberately or innocently, or don't want to share or cooperate, or who are competitive and get personal satisfaction for having something that is in demand that others want. There are going to be people who take advantage of the auction system to make a profit, either by snaffling keys and selling them (or hanging out during candy exchanges and eating them all to level up their eating badges or reselling candy they were given to share, again to make a profit). I choose not to befriend competitive players or players who are fixated on merely acquiring currants at the expense of others who wish to use an item in order to play.

So, I ask other players in key spawn spots if they have been waiting long (to determine when the key is due to appear again), ask if they are going to the locked area right away or later, and if I can go with them if they get the key (while offering to take them in if I get it). Taking turns is cooperative behavior and I am fine with waiting my turn.

In short: Communicate. Cooperate. Don't be a jerk. Don't attribute to malice what can also be explained by innocence or ignorance. That way, everyone wins.

  • Mr. Dawgg - I think party food is another emerging area of contention.

  • I like that everyone seems to assume talking to them would have been effective.  I actually read the story and got the feeling the ones waiting for the key were AFK, hence why he messaged them to say he grabbed the key.  Otherwise, why message them at all?  Wouldn't they have seen him snatch the key quicker than they did?  Wouldn't they have been messaging him?

So it seems to me the issue here is not that one glitch was faster and didn't wait his turn, but that the other glitchen involved weren't paying attention.  If you're AFK I have no way to know if you'll be back in 30 seconds or if you won't make it back until energy drain puts you in hell.  Either way, you're not paying attention, and no one is obligated to get your attention and ask permission.

I have a street where I go to camp rocks.  It's not a locked street, but we have a lot of regulars, and we've worked out a system of calling out rocks similar to that in Ajaya Bliss.  Now frequently, I and many of the others will try and wait for players on the other side of the room to get to the rock before we start mining.  There's no rush since we're camping.  But if someone doesn't move, if someone appears to be AFK, once again there's no way to know when they will come back.  So we mine away.  And we're all friendly and constantly trading gifts and RK, etc.

So no, I don't think the OP didn't anything wrong.  I don't even think it's fair to characterize him as speed grabbing the key from someone patiently waiting.  He took the key because the campers weren't paying attention.  Period.

  • @ Saucelah FWIW the key in keywhot isn't visible when it spawns - not like the ones in Iimenskie.  If you don't hit 'return' at the right moment, it can show up and be taken without your realizing.

  • So we have issues where we could have parties of different thoughts. I think that is promising. Either religious institutions that have opinions on these, or political parties, or just loose groups. There's something here.

  • Keywhot's key WILL glow blue, however, if you're looking for that.

  • I had someone start in on me about this today. After they started whining I offered to let them follow and they kept whining. I assume that is because they wanted to sell it. Whatever. I blocked the person and move on with my day.

  • Sellers of the teal/white key are rather silly.
One key goes for around 1.8-2k.
Yet you need to wait a upwards of 12-15 minutes.
2k profit every 30 minutes, given someone needs to buy that key first, isn't as fufilling as the 27k you can rack up in straight Sparkly in the areas the key requires.
    Not even including the gems.

Also, people who sit there all day farming them shouldn't get pissy if you take 1 key.
    Greed is everywhere.

And thanks for your military service, regardless of the country.

  • Regardless of RL circumstances, I think it's just bad manners to grab the key when people were clearly before you. I really hate when ppl do this irl...cut lines. Ugh

  • Don't sweat it. You weren't in the wrong. About 1/8 of the key campers are bots, another 1/8 are alts that people just check on when the key spawn is due, another 1/2 are campers who just sit there for hours greedily grabbing all the key that spawn using the first come first serve rule as their justification when all they plan to do is scalp the keys anyway.

The remaining 1/4 of people are actually just normal folks dropping by to try and get a key for thier own use. What it all boils down to is that keys are up for grabs. There is no way to know who the other people who are waiting are or what their intentions might be. There is a decent chance that the person bad mouthing you would have stolen the key out from under you without remorse were the rolls reversed.

A good test is to go back an hour later. If that same person is still there grabbing keys, then he was just camping and snatching up every key he could in order to scalp it.
