This may be adding insult to injury but my thinking on ownership is this: If I buy some crayons and give them to a child I transfer my ownership of these crayons to the child. I no longer own the crayons and if the child wants to be a greedy and not share them, the child is well within their rights to hog every single one. If I buy a box of crayons and set them out in the general vicinity of a child, that child had darn well better ask my permission to use them as I still retain the rights of crayola ownership.
Glitch rocks are not like crayons. Crayons are more like cars. Yeah, splitting hairs here. Sorries.
Now, the rocks in Glitch are free resources available to anyone regardless of paid subscription or free play. So no manners are really necessary just spontaneous mutual cooperation among strangers or a parting of the ways. Rocks regenerate quickly, much faster than barnacles and migawd there are tons of them right now. It won't be that way once the public flood gates open.
This "honeymoon" Beta phase will end soon and the awaiting masses will enter in droves onto a level playing field. We seasoned players will be competing for everything that ain't nailed down. It makes sense to me to discuss banding together now and practicing co-op mining or peat/barnacle/loam harvesting. The developers have given us an edge in one of the easiest way to advance our game once the Roll Back occurs. As people of free will we can take advantage of this edge or not. There will be no arm twisting.
The original query was thoughts on cooperative mining.
I like it. I fully intend to take advantage of this feature at reset.
:o)
Personally, I hope to find a no-no sniffing mining partner to do AT LEAST 1 rl hour next test and get out there an mine Limenski Deeps like a crazy person - every rock we can find.. starting with Ajaya Bliss.. That should amount to at least a couple hundred rocks, even with moving around. Any takers? Seems like a win-win to me :)
Giving up on this one since some people are obviously unable to respect any view but their own and intend to force their behaviour on everyone in the game. Shall just have to do my best to avoid them.
^^ thus proving the adage that no good deed goes unpunished.
it's an interesting approach to playing Glitch: "avoiding" people and irrationally taking offence and thinking them "rude" when they use a basic feature of the game. have fun!
I was thinking about posting my opinion, but upon further inspection, I don't think I will: way too much animosity for someone shy like me to be involved with...
In reply to the crayons. What do you do if your child is using the red crayon and someone comes up and wants the red crayon even though there are all the other crayons right there?
@Squirt - Actually I think your comment regarding Cassandria was very rude, frankly you're a good example of why people would want to avoid others at times. It's not nice and it's not necessary.
There are quite a few people around here who should just grow up...and if you're going to forum bash me in return (which you know you will because you just can't resist it can you?!)...I wouldn't bother as I'm sick of being force fed certain peoples opinions and seeing them forced on other people along with mockery and insults... it's just getting beyond a joke now. Being polite to people like you doesn't work so it's not worth trying, because for every person making a valid point or just chatting happily on here, there will always be a troll to ruin it.
So as I sit and wait to be insulted and my have my words thrown back at me, maybe a dev should consider closing this thread as it's just going to fester even more otherwise.
No zeeberk, my objections aren't to what you think - you are perfectly entitled to play the game however you like and think what ever you like too. My objection comes with the whining and snapping at the heels of people that don't agree. It is the people who not only state their views but mock other players non-stop, that I may show animosity too - and frankly, they deserve it. Anyone else, I don't have a problem in the world with. Live and let live.
Morticia, I must say I find it rather amusing that you have appointed yourself the moral arbiter here, given your snideness earlier in this thread.
Perhaps you should have a good long look at yourself before being so judgemental about the behaviour of others, just a thought.
I will clarify that I did not mean to be rude to anyone in particular in my earlier post - it was meant more as an expression of exasperation at the lack of comprehension on display than an attack.

I don't feel I was snide to anyone who spoke reasonably but I'm sure your above comment could apply to quite a few posts in this thread.
And for the record I'm just sick to death of this post and seeing the ill feeling it's creating, nothing more nothing less, I don't feel I have any moral superiority here at all but some things just need to stop and this thread is one of them.
"What do you do if your child is using the red crayon and someone comes up and wants the red crayon even though there are all the other crayons right there?"
depends on how long they've been using it? just because there are other crayons around doesn't mean the kid isn't drawing a fire truck and needs to borrow the red.
but now you're stretching the metaphor to a point where it ceases to be relevant to the situation, as a rock is a crayon that multiple people are perfectly capable of use at the same time. if i'm mining a rock alongside you, i am not denying you the rock, indeed i am granting you bonuses - whereas if i use a specific crayon there is no way you can use it *at all* until i give it back.
btw i'm not feeling any ill will here.
we are discussing concepts of cooperation and ownership and also other questions related to the mechanics of mining. the discussion here has already spawned an idea over in the ideas forum.
I think everyone understands the math by now: mine a rock solo, get all of the pieces of rock available. Mine a rock in a group, get a part of the total, and create some bonus pieces. It's not hard to grasp.
So, back to the original question, which has been thoroughly answered: everyone plays in his or her own way. Some people will not be happy if you start mining with them without asking. Some will be happy. Some won't care. Some won't be happy about it, regardless of whether you ask first or not. Some will form mining parties. There's no consensus, and there won't be one.
In case accusations are thrown around again I do NOT want to restrict anyone's experience of Glitch and I understand that it is possible to get a little carried away when discussing these things.
However I do suggest once again to those who profess to be against co-op mining - give it a try for a day. You may find you enjoy it and come to understand the point of view that asking permission every time is time consuming and a little tedious.
It might even enhance your enjoyment of the game in that you are no longer annoyed each time some one co-op mines the rock you started to mine - it's almost certain they aren't doing it to annoy you, just that they are using a feature of the game.
Usually when someone has an opinion on something it's only human that you would like to convince others. If you're excited about a new movie you go around and tell people it's great. And if someone disagrees, you get a debate. That person tries to convince you that it's not (with all the reasons) and you still trying to convince that person that it's still a great movie.
Opinions can't be right or wrong. They can be based on wrong reasons, on values others consider inapropriate (like cannibalism isn't accepted here, it is perfectly normal somewhere else.)
I am not sure about the crayon comparison. All examples of it seemed logical (both for sharing and not sharing.) Would a rock be more like a bench in the park? Let's say there are a few benches together, and you sit down on one. Someone comes up and sits next to you. (And may or may not start talking or asks if he can sit down.) You might or not like it that you have company, eventhough you are in a public space and that person has every right to sit on that bench as well. (Ok you don't each get more chuncks of bench if you both sit on the same one, so in that case the example fails, but maybe you weren't out to be as effective and efficient as possible, maybe you just wanted to hang around and stare at the scenery.)
There is no right or wrong in above example, or in coop mining or not. The only thing that is a fact, is that both persons involved do not know what the other thinks or likes. You could talk to find out, or just keep the quite calm serenity and stay silent. Both would be right. Or you could get up and walk away, which also wouldn't mean you don't want to sit near that person. Maybe you have an appointment.
So lots of mysteries, lots of assumptions.
And as we say at work: Assumptions is the mother of all f***-ups.
And now I still don't have a clue how that coop mining works. And I've been hitting rocks with one hit and ran to the next because I thought that would make them regen to the max faster (like with wood-trees.) I think I was wrong in that?
Hi Squirt, I am sure you didn't mean to be rude. It can be exasperating when people fail to understand one's point of view I agree.
I have tried co-operative mining and solo mining and both are fun if one feels like it at the time. All I want to say is that sometimes (just sometimes) a person wants to mine a rock in a solitary way for a kind of rest from the hubbub of things. When I feel like that I go and find a rock far away from everything and mine it happily.
I just wanted to say also that people maybe should not assume that everyone is mining for the maximum yield, sometimes it is lovely just to stand by a rock and hit 'Mine' and think about something else. At those times help is not particularly welcome, so perhaps if anyone comes across such a happy solitary soul they should not be surprised if no help is required at that moment. Even (radical thought) that person might just pass by and find another rock?
There are lots of features in the game that people don't use fully. Some people have houses and gardens which they barely make use of. Who am I to send them home to tend vegetables!? ;-)
