Tip for skill learning

Just something I picked up, as i never learned the many of the crafting skills until just recently

I hear alot of people complaining about their skill times for mining & teleporting being 10 days+, and though I have BL5, at 60 something skills I have now -- I will finish TPV in less than 6 days without spending any favour on it...

What I think helped me? Not learning the cooking skills. They all still have ridiculously fast learning times (within just 2 hours for most) and will definitely be the last things I learn, as they keep all my other skills in check as far as learning time.

Something to think about for reset & discuss.

  • I think people should concentrate on the area they're most interested in.  I kinda just learn whatever skill I want to without worrying about order.  Granted, I have most of the cooking skills because that appealed to me, but there's still enough to do in the game so I don't really mind if I have to wait 4 hours to learn a mining skill.

  • I think Beta or Open game status, it will take a very long time for Glitch to introduce enough skills to actually insight learning only certain trees. While at first I would agree with your post, learning what you're interested in doesnt make sense to me anymore, because all the skills are necessary & help one another. I've only been playing Glitch for 5 weeks and Im already almost done with the skill tree as it is now - so really, efficiency is much more important than what you're interested in, because each skill tree brings something. Mining -> money, Crafting -> energy, etc etc, and eventually, you will learn everything

  • Personally strategies such as these existing worries me. To me they're signs that a game is actually less about customisation and more about the most efficient builds, regardless of how many skills and "possibilities" there are. Those MMORPGs with everyone wearing the same mismatched equipment? Shiver.

Not that I'm saying Glitch will end up like that. I mean this is a Beta. But I'm lying if I say I don't really, really, really regret taking up cooking, farming, and animal kinship without mining first.

  • I find teleporting one of the best skills to have.

  • This thread isnt putting any skills in any level or rating whatsoever. I never said cooking (crafting) skills held less value, I actually said that each bunch contributes something different. It is simply something I found out about the cooking skill tree that will save people literally days of learning skill time - which I think is in-arguably helpful.

  • Off topic, but: what's with all the posts (1 2 3 4) by you about you being really rich and famous? Did a gremlin steal your password?
Posted 18 months ago by Liridona Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I just thought everyone would like to know
Posted 18 months ago by Taylor Swift Subscriber! | Permalink
  • That's great that you wanted everyone to know, but it really affects how we view helpful threads like these, when all we can think about is "Wow, that's the guy that was acting like a tool earlier, I doubt he knows what he's talking about." (When it could actually be helpful otherwise)

  • From what I understand the translation of "i'm really rich, and really famous" into Glitchian means "I'm really insecure and have really tiny boy parts."

  • I hope not to be speaking out of turn but I came for advice and read what I thought was something that I was not really interested in.  I am a great believer in the journey not the end result and I don't play games that are a race.  I am interested in people opinions tho' and they experience is always valuable to newbies like myself.  Do I do this? or do I do that?  Or should I just get on and enjoy it :D

  • I'm learning everything at once - in the sense that I'm following a 'horizontal' tree rather than a vertical one - based on short learning time rather than specialization.
It is a mess, tons of equipment at early levels and bags overflowing with ingredients for everything.
But it's so much FUN! I can do anything everywhere, maybe at low levels (for projects and such), but I can always pitch in.

  • Its a good thing no one else's feelings concern me, & that my jokes are only meant for my own entertainment -- I'm not going to say that riling up some feathers doesnt put a smile on my face. But how could simply complimenting yourself make someone SO mad?

Now, if you're worried about the legitimacy of forums, Nutmeg, I would suggest you quit fighting your personal battles on them & wait for the game to open rather than post without any relation to the OP

I love how people reveal their hypocrisy without knowing it themselves and while everyone else does.

  • @MaryLiLamb, I dont know what your post actually meant, though I would like to say that my post wasnt meant to come off as combative, and no matter what anyone's opinion of me is, though I will not shape my actions to gain the respect of anyone, I still enjoy all of you.  :)

  • Zira, I did exactly what you did, switching to longer skills during the downtime :)

  • Don't worry. Someone will enlighten you.

You do make a point about something I had also realized lately. After the reset I will be working my way through the skill table by learning the ones with longest times first so that the penalty of time is added to the shortest skills. The percentage is the same but the actual time penalized will be smaller.

But you were being a dick to Nutmeg.

  • Hm, what a backtrack.
Posted 18 months ago by Taylor Swift Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I wasn't fighting "personal battles"- I was trying to point out that you have really good posts, and that you shouldn't mess them up by posting unrelated garbage on everyone else's threads. It makes you look like a tool, and then people won't want to listen to your ideas, no matter how good they are.

I don't see how you turned me trying to say that you had good posts into me being such a mean and vile person with personal battles, (why would I even have a personal battle against you?) but alright!
Posted 18 months ago by NutMeg Botwin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Last thing I'm posting about this.

@Nutmeg, I never said you were mean nor vile. No was it implied. If someone wishes to personally devalidate my posts based on me posting "Im really rich & Im really famous" on a couple bulletins, that's their prerogative, & its also completely okay in my book, their loss. However, the back & fourth that is occurring on this particular thread is not fine with me, because it keeps getting bumped, then someone clicks on it & reads 10 posts of nothing but unrelated 'garbage'.

That being said, if anyone has any personal vendettas or will they would like to share, feel free to IM me when the game is open rather than muddying up the threads (which is apparently very toolish)

    :)

  • I agree about cooking. I think it is the least essential skill in this game. A lot of people think it's fun, but as far as necessity goes you can find various forms of energy in many different places without needing to cook at all. Plus it's a good way to save some fun quests for that time when you are a high level and don't have much to do.

And zachariah, I silently giggled a little at your posts even though lots of other people didn't. But hey, I have a very immature sense of humor myself, and often my sense of humor gets lost on most players in this game.

  • I was in a TON of pain from an abscessed tooth (Like, seriously thought I was going to die)....now that I've had surgery and I'm on pain killers, I'm a little bit more easy going. So, I'm sorry I was so rough around the edges ;)

  • And I think I'll probably try to be patient and wait to get the shorter skills till after I'm done with the more important ones.

ghost777,,,,I just realized in this last test this is so true.mining like crazy to save 1 hour on a long skill is silly if you left that skill to last.Mary is right.I shall overlook some to get the longest done, this also will give me some good sleep. Now as for the last of her comment I do not judge anyone or I slap myself on the upside of my brain if I go to.But in real life If you are rich and famous, believe me you don`t have the time to play here very much and as for the forums,Like old money ladies eating crab cakes at tea.don`t they and their men  never go to the forums,Enjoy your time.

  • also, mining is money, money is important seems pretty important in the first dozen levels or so,

like, really helpful. buy your house, establish your patches and gardens, start farming, etc, after that, then i can start to really specialize my skills.

but to me, mining is the root skill that i base the rest of my glitch from.
Posted 18 months ago by A Magical Unicorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I see your point get money get house,I did the same thing way back in testing. There are so many incredible houses now for everyone everywhere, why hurry.Unless you have a specific location and house, then I would say yes you are correct ,get your money quick and settle in your favorite place.I dont think for the hard core players like myself we will worry to much about housing or money,we been there done it all.Good luck with your currents though.I myself gave away much to folks needing before I found a good home.So sorry for typos or bad grammer ,to-day fingers do what they damn well please.AKA..Ghost777 this is my mule fabricator.just so you know main account is ghost777

  • what i meant to infer was that in early levels, i feel like having a house and plots and patches is an asset to skill-building.
Posted 18 months ago by A Magical Unicorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Magical Unicorn: I agree!  I have already planned out which skills will get me to my house the fastest, because not only are the plots and patches important, but just having enough space to dump all my shit means a  lot!  Plus I am extremely picky about which house I get, I even prefer to pick which number I am.

  • The greatest surprize for me would be a Salvador Dali house in west spice IX world in 3 D.I think I shall collect all the currents I can after reset and mine mine mine.just gotta feeling this is going to be a huge 'BOOM BOOM BOOM' to the game. Many of us are anticipating this miracle to happen.I am so into Salvador Dali, but as just now love my Alakol 'Frank LLoyd Wright double balcony with lots of cabinet space for lots of stuff.

  • You can't learn most of the longer skills first, since they become available only after learning shorter ones.  Cooking skills do tend to take less time, but since the recent adjustments to the energy contents of foods, cooking has become much more useful.  (I think that somewhere in the forums, there's a link to a spreadsheet which compares the amount of energy expended in making a food to the amount it gives you when you eat it, if you're interested.)

While I, too, had a plan for learning skills in a certain order after the last reset, I ended up learning a little bit of everything first, mostly in shortest-remaining-skill-first order, because I find that the game is much more fun when I have a wider array of skills.
Posted 17 months ago by glum pudding Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Typical short term vs. long term problem with fun. I agree, having more skills in the beginning of the game is more fun (even though it might all just be the same by the time the game opens), but I think it would be much more fun a month into the game when you havent  dug yourself into such deep holes ya know?
Posted 17 months ago by Taylor Swift Subscriber! | Permalink
  • i also did what zira and millie did- learned across, until later, when the skills got longer, so i could switch to longer ones during down-time, and figured out what i wanted to do. there wasn't a lot of strategy as i just kind of felt my way thru the game at first.

but i'm curious exactly how you play without cooking: do you buy all of your food/energy?
Posted 17 months ago by greenkozi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Green: To answer your question, I do buy my own food, but its completely by choice. To avoid buying your own food you can actually just grow vegetables for shorter term energy you can focus energy meditation. I've done it before, but honestly, Im way too ADD to wait for things, I dont even make my own powders, so I end up buying alot of things I could just make.
Posted 17 months ago by Taylor Swift Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @greenkozi
i don't have a single cooking skill, I meditate, contemplate my emblems and buy food from vendors, generally.

also, lots and lots and lots of earthshakers. (which are cheaper from a vendor than the AH)

  • If you nibble a lot of pigs, or harvest a lot of egg plants, you don't need to cook... it's just more efficient to cook now.  (Before a couple of weeks ago, it was mostly a break-even situation, and cooking was only necessary at projects.)
