Anti-Social... NO WAY!!!! Free stuff!

Hello all you Glitchens out there!

I've been reading a lot on the forums lately, how that some people find that the players aren't that social anymore. Less nice things, more blocking etc. I think this is very sad. Glitch is about being happy and I think everybody needs to be just that!

I dropped a pile of stuff in Gregarious Grange, next to the subway station, just to show that there are still nice Glitchens around that want to help others, no strings attached!

http://www.glitch.com/locations/LLI32G3NUTD100I/

The pile contains all kinds of stuff, from musicblocks to TP scripts, from bags to food, from drinks to tools and.... Feel free to take whatever you want, or need :)

Regards, Wyatt

  • thanks Wyatt!  I've been doing similar things like hiding music blocks and dropping cherries turned into other fruit, etc.

i remember when i first joined that i would randomly find things hidden behind trees, etc.  would love to bring that back again!

anyone know if the sandbox group is still active?  i was never a part of it but know they did some awesome stuff!

    Thanks Wyatt!

  • @Condar - ........

@OMG BACON!! & Atlantis - Guess some people are just born greedy, and proud of it.... I will plan this kind of "stuff drops" more often, with the group that I am in. Condar, off course, you are not invited.

  • Ya know, I figured he was a newbie and might have legitimately needed "all the things," but then I  looked at his profile.

Unfortunately, this game allows some people to be anti-social.  Fortunately, that allows the rest of us to identify such folk much faster than games where that isn't possible.

Or at least, that's what I tell myself before shaking my head and moving on.

  • I drop things behind trees and bushes and rocks all the time.  Sometimes with a note, sometimes not.  There is a "We Drop Stuff" group, but it's been inactive for a while.  That doesn't mean you can't drop things of your own!

(I used to have a secret stash on my street with a note.  Over time, all the items disappeared from it and nothing was added.  Finally, even the note was taken.  Now I stash elsewhere.)

  • Found a tinkertool hidden behind a rock the other day (on my 3rd Glitchian day) half used-up, already had one, and its not like I actually use the tinkertool overmuch..
Still, was pretty f-ing ecstatic about finding stuff hidden in random nooks and crannies XD

  • Oh it had absolutely nothing to do with being anti-social. I'm actually pro-social, I just think it's hilarious. After so many threads of people whining about this and that and *sniffles* "They took stuff from my street!" I thought I'd join in with the jerks but actually fess up to my backhandery. Ya got to give me that, I didn't lie about it.

I just did it before someone else did. And for the lulz.

  • my two currants

If a breach of etiquette is perceived in Condar's actions, ok, but it is subjectively applied and perhaps is superseded by the clear language in the contract of the original offer.

The offer was made with no strings attached and allowed motivations for taking to include either need or want.   Condar, at the very least, took what he wanted.

To admonish him for accepting the tenets of the contract with no clear breech is not salient in this situation.   And to invoke bans and introduce unhappiness into the post is contrary to the spirit of the original gesture.

"I dropped a pile of stuff in Gregarious Grange, next to the subway station, just to show that there are still nice Glitchens around that want to help others, no strings attached!"

"... Feel free to take whatever you want, or need :) "

  • @ Condar, thanks for letting me know the type of "person" you are lol. At least Now I don't have to be concerned about You hoovering up my freebie pile.

@ ZombieVegan...I personally believe the op hoped people wouldn't be greedie piggies.
Posted 4 months ago by Anya Karenya Subscriber! | Permalink
  • it's why i love to just hide them behind rocks, trees, etc.  no obligation to leave anything.  just take it cause you earned it for being a curious glitch!  :)
Posted 4 months ago by Airya Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Aliana,  well yes, it seems that way by what was said, after the fact.
Posted 4 months ago by ZombieVegan Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @ ZombieVegan...I honestly don't think it should need be said to not be a greedy jerk lol. Most normal people I know wouldn't even think of doing selfish hoovering up so they don't think others would behave in such a selfish way....unless they are looking to be disliked by many.

Oh well, it is always useful to get to see some players true colors in the forum instead of having to experience them first hand :)
Posted 4 months ago by Anya Karenya Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Alaina, I believe you are honest.   And I believe Wyatt is honest and had the best intentions. I think the offer could have been worded a little differently to better align with his expectations.

I don't know whether other people had been there before Condar (he might not know either).  I don't know how to quantify 'almost everything' without a log of what was dropped and what was taken and by whom.   I understand and typically follow common social courtesies.   That includes giving others the benefit of the doubt, and in this specific case the offer stated take what you want with no conditions ... so I'll not be judging anyone who took anything from that pile harshly.

    peace, shalom, namaste, cheers!

  • I think it's totally reasonable given the player himself says in this thread that he did it to be a jerk and to laugh that others didn't like the jerkiness.

He actually claims that makes it not anti-social, but that's the essential definition of anti-social behavior.
Posted 4 months ago by Red Sauce Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think if you're going to drop stuff in the world and say "no strings attached" you have to just let that stuff go and not worry about who takes it, how much they take, or why they took it. I mean, "no strings attached" literally means there are no rules, so it is neither rude nor wrong for one person to take all of it.

Don't use the term "No strings attached" if you're going to later call people out for being rude if they take all of it.

I don't know what was in the pile, or who took how much of what. But no one has come to this thread saying "Oh no, I really wanted (insert item) and when I got to the pile it was gone." If no one is complaining about missing out on something they wanted, why harass one player because they wanted all the stuff in the pile?

Was it an entire pile of rare items? Most things are pretty easy to come by in this game, so it seems unlikely anyone's game play was harmed or day ruined, simply because they didn't get to take from the "no strings attached" pile.
Posted 4 months ago by Lynnt Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Lynnt, I think it's a matter of perspective here.  Let's say for a moment that there had been no talk from those who picked up the pile, and the pile provider had no way of knowing what happened. But maybe they suspected, based on looking at the pile over time, that one person took it all.  But since they did say "no strings attached" you're right, they'd just probably need to let it go.

However, the person who took it all in order to, as Saucelah points out, "join in with the jerks"?  Well, I don't know what their own personal values are and I don't know what they would think if they went back and evaluated their actions.  But I think it wouldn't be unreasonable if they thought that their actions were, in fact, rude.   (If they think that rudeness was justified or worth it "for the lulz" or if they don't is another matter, I suppose.)

  • I look at it like this. Dropping piles, half stubbed rocks, empty garden plots.
It's like when you go to gamble in Las Vegas or anywhere else where it's legal. Ok and you know you have a certain amount of money and you could lose that money. That is the chance you take when you bring money to Vegas. You will either lose it or come back with more. It's a 50/50 deal.
I look at dropped items, half stubbed rocks and empty garden plots like they're Las Vegas and I have tons of money in my pocket.
I know i'm taking the chance and I could come back with nothing. Who goes to Vegas with $500 and has no doubt they're going to come back with $1000? Hardly anyone. It's the same thing with these piles, you take the chance and know it could be gone later. That is just how it is.
If you want to go to Vegas, you know you may come back with less than what you came with. Same with piles, you know you may come back to less than what you left.
And if you leave piles, you have to accept this.

  • I think we all can agree that what Wyatt Taylor (the op) did was fun & generous & in the best spirit of the game. He may have been disappointed that his gifts weren't shared by more Glitchen but he certainly doesn't sound like "sour grapes".
And, after all, perhaps the person who said they took plenty didn't in fact. He may just be an agitator.
If we all make some "hidden" drops as we go around Ur, it will be all the more fun.

  • First of all, thank you for all the comments on my forum post :)

I'm not English, or American, I tried my best to make myself clear. I could have wrote down a whole list of rules. Perhaps that Conrad, or anyone else, would understand the whole point of this "stuff drop" better with rules attached instead of no strings :P

And I'm not mad, I was just a little surprised and dissapointed. Next drop will be soon, and I will try harder on the note part ;)

  • I just dropped three beans: one in Muufo, one in Aranna, and one in Rasana. Aren't I just the most generous glitchy glitch in all of Ur? There are no rules for getting your hands on one of these precious little artifacts, except this: DONT TOUCH MY DAMN BEANS.

Hugs to the OP and pfffffft to the eternal few so eager to cut others down to their own teeny-tiny ungenerous sizes.

  • Wyatt Taylor  - if you don't want everything to be taken by one person, don't tell people where stuff is and don't leave it all in one place at the same.

that's the best suggestion I have.

you could give clues to places... do one smaller pile at a time,  at your convenience, making it less liekly that the same person will be looking,  and even if they do, they will need to make the effort and use their brains, so it won't be such an easy thing.

  • Another newbie here. Hi, all.

    1. I didn't know I could hide nice things, in the hope that a fellow glitch might later find and use.
    2. I will do this thing from now on because I find the concept delightful.
    3. I haven't the faintest idea as to WHERE I should go to drop anything off.
    4. I have no idea as to HOW to hide something. Rarely do I "disappear" behind a rock or tree, and when that happens, I have no clue that I might be standing next to a "gift."

Comments on #3 and #4 are most assuredly welcome.

  • 3. Anywhere! Anywhere that isn't easy to see at first glance. :) There's lots of foreground stuff on some streets.
    4. You just drop it! If you are curious as to something being hidden, then just hit enter when you're behind something. If there is anything, a menu will come up asking you to interact.

Posted 4 months ago by Penelope Garcia Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Ann, inside the log at Cebarkul is a great place to start!  In the abandoned towers too maybe - especially as people go to these places now to get keys and go to basements, and that'd be just such a bonus to their explorations.  In places that are rocky, like caves or mountains, there's good nooks and crannys to play with, lots of up-high places in the bogs, and in Groddle type foresty areas there's trees in the foreground to hide items behind or leaves to hide items up in tall places.

Hope you have lots of fun :)

  • I wouldn't feel bad about taking a whole pile of stuff. But if there was a stated or implied intent that people take one item if they want it, to be shared with many glitchen, then I'd respect that. There's not always that implied intent, though.

I've occasionally grabbed whole piles of loot, but more often than not, I don't take anything from a pile. Like, if I find myself on a Community Kitchen member's street, I'll just harvest their trees or peat bog or whatever and leave their scattered goods alone, because it's not what I'm there for.

If I take a food item from the ground, I get the food item; but if I make the food item myself, I get the food item and the iMG for making it.
