Grand Re-Opening of GRDB!

The Glitch Resource Database started out as a little tinkering just to see what the API was about.  It turned into a little more, and I decided to see if people would find it useful.   The answer was yes!

It quickly became apparent by most (myself most of all!) that I am not a web designer.   What little I knew was inefficient and woefully out of date.

A good friend Boom and Bust stepped in to help, and I think you'll agree he's done a fantastic job of re-designing the interface!

Without further ado:

As always, feedback is welcome.   I enjoy making this useful for people!

If you find the tool useful, please give a thanks to Boom and Bust for making it look nice.

  • Very nice! I really like the clean layout and simplicity.

Is it me or the web design that cuts off the information on the left side of some pages? Like the mail box pages has the the left column mostly hidden except for the ends of several locations?

  • I can't replicate the issue with IE9 or Chrome.  What browser are you using Mary?

  • Very nice. I like the way you can hide housing blocks, useful feature.
Posted 14 months ago by Kraftmann Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Nice redesign, BUT I did notice some goofy things, like a lot of Metal rocks are mentioned being in housing blocks.... A housing block can't have Metal rocks at the moment, right?
Posted 14 months ago by Demetra Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Hrm...  The API SAYS there are metal rocks... If they're there or not, I'll have to go investigate.
    Nice catch.
Posted 14 months ago by Vicereine Linnæa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Metal Rocks in housing blocks are legitimate.   I just went to Lethensome Lift blocks and there are lots of Metal Rocks!
Posted 14 months ago by Vicereine Linnæa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I like the "hide housing blocks" feature too.  That was all Boom and Bust on that one :)

P.S.  The housing blocks shown are PUBLIC streets that everyone can get to.  There's been a bit of confusion with people thinking that these are the items in people's homes.  They are not.  They're the resources outside peoples front doors! :)

  • Yup, There were plenty of metal rocks in my old Lethensome Lift neighborhood.

  • It is a beautiful interface (and the data isn't bad either). What is a patch tree?
Posted 14 months ago by BarryW Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I know, "patch" is kind of a weird one.  It's a bare patch where a tree can be planted.  Hard to classify properly :)

  • I like it! My only small quibble is that the old site had a refresh time on it, and the new redesign doesn't--can the refresh time be added back in, or a statement as to what point in the hour be added, please?

  • Thanks for the good work, I was unaware Metal rocks could be in housing until your update, so it caught me by surprise. (I'm out in Besara, no metal rocks in housing there).

  • The reality of tree types is displayed here.  I love this.

All those cooks weren't kidding. There are very few spice trees.  And I guess I can stop splanking people for poisoning bubble trees.  Seems to be plenty.

But wait....why don't all housing areas have patches? O.o

Awesome tool.....and now I am full of questions for Glitch
Posted 13 months ago by Nimrodblack Subscriber! | Permalink
  • If there's a tree occupying them, they don't show up as a "patch".  Those are bare and ready to be planted on only,.
Posted 13 months ago by Vicereine Linnæa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • i'm not entirely sure that you;re getting updates on free patches as often as hourly. I've been hunting for the ones listed (that have been listed for many hours AFAICT) and can't find them

  • Nicely done (just a little aside, receive is spelled incorrectly...the old "i" before "e" except after "c").  Great job!!!
Posted 13 months ago by AlmostSilver Subscriber! | Permalink
  • ...fixed spelling errors.... <blush>

  • GAH!    Well half the "location" links are currently broken on the glitch website.  I've submitted bug reports, and will update this thread when things are fixed.

Until that time:   Be very wary of the data.  While it will still be useful to get a general idea where things are located, actual reports will be off.

    Srry everyone!
Posted 13 months ago by Vicereine Linnæa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Petra You can't rely on the data for patches - patches on public streets are extremely rare, and only exists because a player has poisoned the tree that was originally there, usually with the intention of replacing it immediately. If you're trying to do a quest, it would be best to poison the trees yourself.

  • Captains log:
    Stardate 11/7/2011

Hostile aliens are attempting to break my site by making the API return bad data for some streets.  Science officer has patched code to deal with broken links in hopes that it will keep us running for a while longer.

Meanwhile, I've been making out with Uhura in Scotty's quarters while he's on duty <snicker>

  • This site has been invaluable to me. I use it a lot. I would love for stuff like this to be officially recognized by the Tiny Speck site with links and all if they are "safe" to use.

I'd love to get a better view of which achievements I still need to get, but I've been hesitant to try some of the ones that ask for permission to access my personal game information - How do I know what's okay to use, like that?
