can we just settle this. family game or not?

i can't really find an official definition for what a family game is or not, but i mean, it's essentially the same as a 'family film' in regards to the use of language. so, while 'family game' doesn't have an objective definition (yet), 'family film' does. it's "a film genre that is designed to appeal to a variety of age groups and, thus, families." i think we all agree that the game appeals to many age groups. i suppose we could also agree that the game is PG-13 considering that a player must be 13 years or older to play (with parental consent). films typically are upgraded to PG-13 from PG when language is used sparingly (generally, less than 4 times) or the movie is especially violent. note that Glitch never uses language and is never violent, so the game really should be PG or even G. Certainly, it would be rated E for everyone with a disclaimer that they cannot control the content experienced online.

ultimately though, the game has parallels with a family film that's rated PG-13. and as such, we shouldn't use language.

thank you for your time.

(edit: ToS says 14 years or older, so I guess PG-14 would be more accurate.)

  • have you seen this kind of language being used profusely in glitch chat? i certainly haven't.  what is the point of this discussion? you have already conceded it's intended for 14+. there's hardly a 14 year old on the planet who hasn't been exposed to or uses what you call foul language especially those browsing the internet. this isn't hello kitty adventure island. aren't there sexual and drug references in the game already? morality/ethics are not the responsibility of a computer game to teach.

  • There's really no need to attack the OP. His question wasn't malicious. Everyone should just stop, right now, and grab some ketchup packets. If they just listened to the OP, squeeze them out in your hands and rub them in little tribal circles on your ass cheeks. Deciding on a PG-13 rating doesn't mean that it should be G, I think he was just trying to clarify.

  • I think people get upset when I use fuck or shit. But honestly, there's nothing wrong with those words. Just because society says something is so, doesn't mean it is, and I hardly ever let society have the power over me that it seems to have over so many other people. Also note, INB4 words suck as FUCK or SHIT are different from derogatory terms meant to specifically oppress a specific group of people, which is why I'm so adamant about people NOT using words like faggot but am so adamant over words like fuck and shit being okay (because they're not designed to oppress any specific group of people and the only bad thing about them is the fact that people just don't like them for no good reason).

Also, I just want to point out that the ToS (since that was mentioned) also states that individuals between the ages of 14 and 17 are assumed to have parental permission to play the game. In keeping with the metaphor of a movie rating, that is actually more similar to an R-rating as opposed to a PG-13 rating. Individuals 17 and under must have parental guidance in viewing an R-rated film, just as Tiny Speck expects individuals under the age of 17 to have parental guidance (or permission) to play Glitch. And obviously the game itself isn't vile or violent enough to be constituted as an R-rated game, but it can be inferred that some foul language would be acceptable in a gaming community where only individuals 17 and older can register without parental consent. In other words, we're all grown-ups and we use grown-up words.

Those are my two cents, anyway.

  • I have a problem with the ways movies are rated. As for video games, there is a rating system already set up specifically for them. Strangely enough, I also have a problem with that system.

Neither of them apply to an online multi-player game very well anyway.

Is it suddenly going to be given an R rating because someone said "fuck" one too many times in chat? Because the NUMBER of words considered obscene by the ratings panel can be the determining factor between PG-13 and R ratings for a movie. In other words, a movie dealing with a sociopathic child flirting with homicide and even committing it, but only saying "shit" once can still be PG-13 because it has that kid from Home Alone in it. But if it says one more curse word, it earns an R rating. That's a real movie, btw.

Let's just trust that people will decide for themselves what is appropriate for them. And let's hope parents spend some time being parents and pay attention to what their kids are doing. Especially if they think their kid may not be able to handle something as harmless as Glitch.

That being said, Glitch is made for adults, not families. TS has not hidden that fact anywhere. Unless one considers a TOS to be hidden.

  • I don't think it is a family game. I don't think it needs to be a family game. As cute as the glitches are, I now almost wish they were less cartoony to fit the original intended demographic. How many family games have trees that ask for happy endings, you know? It's an adult game. Not adult in the blue sort of game, but adult as in adult humor.

For some reason it seems like that stance has become demonized. Kids like the colors and want to play, kids happen to look at it while parents are playing and what to know what's going on with the cute, fuzzy characters.

But as far as I was aware, it was not a family game. Please, Tiny Speck, confirm this. It certainly influences my interest (unfortunately in the negative sense), but for every one of me, you'll probably find a family with kids who all want to play together. New demographic. Not all bad. But I agree the matter should be settled once and for all.

  • No, of course we can't settle this, or any similar issue.  This is the Internet.  As soon as any form of consensus seemed to be approaching, there would rise up a herd of griefers to sabotage it simply to assert their "individuality".  That's how anarchy works, which is what you have in a social arena such as this, where there is no form of either positive or negative sanction available that has any teeth.  Only when someone gets so egregious as to force the Devs to ban them can anyone's behavior be changed.

I respectfully beg to differ. It's Tiny Speck's game, so they have the final word. It's not up for group consensus, it's up for TS to declare the type of game they intend it to be (which I believe they have done numerous times). It's not a group decision, it's a business decision for Tiny Speck. Of course I'm not just talking about language, but about how young they now intend the game to skew. It's quite clear that their initial product was intended for mature audiences (not mature like x rated, but mature enough to handle innuendo, drug references, sexual references and not be offended by user-created no-no names).  There seems to be a growing group of players who would like the game to skew much younger, with more rules and regulations, so they can play as a family with their kids. This isn't up for group consensus, it's not like anarchy will ensue. This is, again, a business decision for Tiny Speck, as to whether they intend to keep their original demographic and let kiddies and families play at their own discretion, or whether they decide to tone it down and make it  a family, PG=13 game. It's not really up to us to decide, but it would be nice if Tiny Speck, did, at some point, indicate the way forward to stop these discussions. People can't be offended by what they've been warned about (or offended by what their kids might see if they have prior warning) and by the same token, people can't really complain about a shifting demographic and toning down of content if they've already been told about the game's direction content-wise.
Posted 15 months ago by Eureka Subscriber! | Permalink
  • People seem to be continually offended about what they've been warned about and continually offended by what their kids might see when they have a prior warning.

A "shifting demographic and a toning down of content" would make this just another internet game, not something edgy and different.  If TS wants to be part of the big glop of indistinguishable internet games, there's a big ocean for them to drown in.

  • Sometimes I'm quite alarmed when I hear people letting their kids sit and play with them, not only because I have never needed to play a game online before bad enough that I would have children sit next to while I play (I'm a *huge* advocate of children playing outside) but also because they often get shocked when questionable content turns up.  Just cause the game is cute doesn't mean its for kids!

  • I do sometimes have my middle-school-aged daughter watching me play -- she's really charmed by the game. *but* I know that this is a game intended for adults, with innuendo in the game itself and pretty wide-ranging chat, and if I minded her seeing those things, it'd be on me to keep her away, not on TS or the chatters to change to suit my standards for her.

  • I simply don't want kids in the game.  It isn't a language issue for me.  Nor an "adult content" issue.  I am not interested in being somebody's babysitter. I prefer to interact in game with peers, not children.

  • Now that the terms of service and popular consensus seem to have settled on this not being a game for all the family, perhaps we can concentrate on inventing some new Glitchy swears. I have no problem with any non-derogatory curses, if that's how people want to express themselves; but I think we can do better. I'll get the ball rolling by suggesting 'frabble' and 'schurp', as in, "I wish that frabbling chicken would calm the schurp down", or "If that yoga frog doesn't shut up I'm gonna kick him in the schurps". Also, with 11 giants we have lots of scope for inventive blasphemy: "Spriggan hell" is the best I can come up with - I dare you to do better...

  • I was surprised and disappointed too when I saw people flaunting and celebrating rude, crude and lewd language and behavior, apparently without any objections from anyone. I misunderstood the implications of the cuteness and absence of fighting in the game.

I don't imagine that anyone who is actually searching for a family game, and studies the Glitch site carefully, including the forums, will mistake it for a family game. Browsing through the forums just a few minutes dispels that illusion, and the FAQ says explicitly that the game is *not* for young children:

    beta.glitch.com/help/faq/
"Is Glitch for kids? Glitch is not for young children. You must be 14 or older to play, and those between the ages of 14 and 17 need parental permission in order to sign up."

I just did a Web search for "families," "children" and "kids" at glitch.com, and didn't find any results other than that one.

The terms of service do include an agreement not to post any vulgar or obscene content, but I don't imagine that means anything to anyone, including Tiny Speck. I don't see why that's even in there, unless it's a legal requirement, or the terms were copied from some example without a thorough revision. If it isn't a legal requirement, I think it should be removed, because I don't see it being respected or enforced at all.

The terms of service also include an agreement not to post any content which, in the sole judgement of Tiny Speck, is objectionable or inhibits anyone from enjoying the service. Seeing people flaunting and celebrating rude, crude and lewd language and behavior, spoils the game for me a lot, and seeing objections to that being stigmatized and marginalized, makes me feel alone and unwelcome, but I don't see any sign that Tiny Speck has any objection to it, or that anyone cares if it spoils the game for anyone else. That too makes me feel alone and unwelcome.

That doesn't mean I won't play, but it does dampen my enthusiasm.

It also doesn't mean that I want my idea of courteous language to be imposed on anyone. I don't, but I do want people to know how I feel about it.

  • yes, it's settled.

it is not and never was a family game.

    it is for grownups.

in my real life i appreciate polite language and modest behavior. i also appreciate a child-free environment.

so the question of acceptable language and content is really not the same as whether or not it's a family game.

if the language is clean, it is because the participants in the conversation wish for it to be clean and not because somebody's untended child may have wandered into the game.

oh, my goodness! think of the children!, someone will keen at an ear-splitting level.

  • Hi Ferond - it might take a while for this to catch on, but I have an idea for you for when the game goes live (unless you've done this already...?): Why not start a clean chat group, set clear parameters for it, and make it invitation only (or set it so that people need permission to join, or however you set that up). If someone's a jerkpants and joins with the sole purpose of dropping f-bombs on you, kick 'em out. This way, you can create a little inner Glitch community of like-minded souls, and play the game (relatively) free of the swearzins and naughtitude.
    Just my thinkings...
