You can zoom (for a limited time only)!

We're currently testing out a zoom function in the game, and for the heck of it we made it available to anyone who feels curious…for a little while at least. Be aware, this isn't destined to be permanently available; its future lies in some other super cool thing we're working on for later on down the road.

How does this work? If you're game to mess around, try typing "/zoom 0.8" in Local Chat. That will take you out to 80% of the normal/default zoom level. Similarly, "/zoom 0.6" will zoom even further out and "/zoom 1.2" will zoom in closer than the default.

You can use any number between 0.1 and 2.0, but it will look best in the 0.7 to 1.0 range ... anything bigger than 1.0 will be a bit blurry and, though 0.4 is kind of fun, it can look very strange too. :) If you just want to get back to normal, your "there's no place like home" command will be "/zoom 1".

Finally, be careful how you type in the commands as you're playing around—it won't show up as a message to other players if you use the tips above, but you may end up spamming people with nonsense if it comes out wrong.

So go play god for a day, and have fun!

  • Zoom should be tied to a skill, but no manual typing in the setting in game.

  • I'll be very interested to find out what the "other super cool thing we're working on for later on down the road" is.  As someone with a sight impairment, I have to say the zoom function is great.  I'd also love to be able to control font sizes, colours and backgrounds in the chat/search/inventory windows if possible :)  And yep, I have idea'd that, but I might just do it again!

  • This is terrific, and I'd love to have it as a permanent feature.  Why not???

  • Would you like honest feedback?  Here are several comments:

    1. Yep, it's fun!  It gives a much wider view of things and gives a different 'look' to gameplay.

    2. It's very difficult to see anything such as detail on a street signpost for selection, if you're zoomed out beyond some limit (which probably differs for each player).

    3. If something like this is to become available in the game, it would require a nice dial or other interface, since typing "/zoom .x" into the local chat gets tedious.  Zooming out for walking and exploring, and back in for performing any specific actions, gets typing-intensive.  (I'm assuming any use of this feature would have easier controls than those we've been given to play around with today.)

    4. At anything beyond .9, it makes me extremely dizzy and I feel like I'm going to be sick. I have to look away for a few minutes to readjust my eyesight, and right now I have to go get a beverage and something bland to eat to settle my stomach.  Wherever zoom is used in the game eventually, it might be good to keep this in mind and make it optional, if possible.

  • I love it!

now...if we could make the game window bigger...

  • My educated guess.... this is for Snapshotting II.

I think they will let you zoom out in order to take a picture of a larger area, that will then be processed at full resolution so you can take a giant megapic of an entire street. I know lots of people like to take pictures of parties/decorated streets and manually stitch them together.

I think that's what this is.

P.S. I would also like to see this as permanent feature/skill... Love zoom 0.5 for resource gathering.

  • @Eleanor Rigby - It is optional...

I also hope this becomes a permanent feature... I would agree that a slider would be more convenient, but, tbh, I didn't have much difficulty navigating Callopee at 0.4- I just set a destination and autowalked into the sign to make sure I went to the correct street. I found it extremely helpful in getting a rough idea where all the rocks were, and it made mining a much simpler process (e.g., I didn't have to swoop the camera all over or run the entire street to determine there was nothing there), and it made seeing where the Rube is (!) much easier. I could even see where stray guano was at 0.4. Very cool!

  • Is anyone zooming IN for any reason?
Posted 10 months ago by Sparkly Vampire Subscriber! | Permalink
  • When you zoom in, you can pretend you are walking faster, and may be amusing to see your character's animation at seemingly double speed.
Posted 10 months ago by TomC Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Djabriil, yes, it's optional right now (and is about to disappear).  But since Blanky said:

"Be aware, this isn't destined to be permanently available; its future lies in some other super cool thing we're working on for later on down the road."

I was just asking that whatever it is slated to become part of be well thought out, with the choice to opt-out if that makes sense for Super Cool Unknown Thing.

  • oh it's nice moving around like that.

less movement of the background makes for more relaxing viewing.

i realised that wandering round Glitch makes me slightly nauseous

  • Is there any possibility that this could be kept with a couple of preset buttons, like 0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.25 and 1.5?

  • It seems like when you zoom out you walk slower, but maybe that's just the new view...LOL

  • Yeah, you can take this back, from my uncomfortably sweaty hands!

  • I'm sure it'll end up being replaced pretty well.

  • To clarify: while the "/zoom" command via local chant will almost certainly be removed, the functionality won't be. There will be be a way to zoom in and out, just with a better UI (or, perhaps, no UI at all — we've been experimenting with auto-zooming, based on the level, what you're doing, etc., and if we can make that work, it'll be even better).

  • hmmm, auto zoom would have to be really well done - I've found it very annoying in some other games - especially when in interfers with how I want to look at something. hook it to the mouse wheel?

  • cool!

  • Typos often produce something better than intended... I think a Local Chant might be quite interesting in Glitch :) What would that entail, I wonder?
Posted 10 months ago by Liza Throttlebottom Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yay, stoot, we love you!
Posted 10 months ago by Zoethor2 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • So, from what I'm reading, we'll have this until a better feature comes out, meaning that we won't have the feature removed and then a gap of experimenting on the other side till something pops up?

  • Hey cool stuff
The camera snapshot doesn't work tho
One thing I would love with that one is to set the depth of field while zooming in ;)
Posted 10 months ago by Lemo Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Don't know if this is intended but going afk (naturally or with #4 key) resets the zoom to 1, which stays after returning from AFK

  • "while the "/zoom" command via local chant..."

Heh heh, local chant. He takes his giants seriously. *imagines Glitch monks*

  • Thank you! I enjoyed playing with that functionality, it's handy, especially for taking screenshots (that include all the elements we wish to see in a single picture) & i like the broader overview it enables one to have. :)

  • Bree said, hook it to the mouse wheel?
    +1037. Yes.
And please, no autozoom. That would drive me to insanity.
Posted 10 months ago by Fernstream Subscriber! | Permalink
  • One more request for no autozoom, please.

But, yes, let's absolutely have a little slider that we can adjust, and the ability to take snapshots while zoomed in or out!

Thanks for giving us this fun bit of new Glitchery to play with while you guys are working on the updates!

WE LOBE YOU, TINY SPECK!!! <3

  • I absolutely luuuuuuve it!  I'm a miner and it makes mining less boring. It's great fun to watch the butterflies, batterflies, piggies and chickens while you're mining.  Please don't take it away

  • i'm loving zo.Om:) i wonder if it is possible to zoom different things, like "/zoom butterflies 1.4" to get giant butterflies and "/zoom me 0.4" at the same time... or "/zoom pigs 1.9" and only when they are that zoomed, we can feed them helium and they will fly ahahah

  • I don't actually have a mouse-wheel (nor does my fiancee) so I hope it isn't linked to that... there's no ribbon on the side of my pad either.
Posted 10 months ago by Djabriil Subscriber! | Permalink
  • i was just going to say it should be an auto-zoom based on the area. with an option of 'normal view' vs 'zoom view' via single on/off button switch.

  • Great - I really like seeing more of the surroundings as you travel.  (Particularly in the Drop / Other Drop, where this is normally difficult).

Add my vote to the requests to keep this in game, but user-adjustable.

  • loving this zoom facility - not sure I like the auto zoom idea tho if that comes in, would be better to be able to choose - even if it was with a in and out type command. Very nice for a different view for game play tho!

  • Hmmmm..... it appears you can't zoom out after you start talking to Rube.  So better zoom out first so you can read what he's offering!  LOL

  • There is a bug, most visible in Flipside, where if you are zoomed *in* (e.g. 1.5) too much, the graphics engine thinks the textures are off-screen, so does not load the floor. Somewhere along the way either the boundary box for the textures is not scaling or the hit-box check is missing the texture (since it is now "too far" off-screen).

  • oh, so close to what I'm looking for! You have no idea how much I would give to have the game window resize to take up the entire browser window stretched across the desktop (as in, support for multiple monitors).
