Why buy a house?

Hi Glitchen!

This is a little different than all the "what house should I buy" posts...

Why buy a house at all?

I'm working on a blog post about housing, and I thought I'd get feedback from the forum community.  I know there are gameplay benefits to owning a house, and I'm not looking to be convinced.  I do own a house myself.  I just want to open this up for discussion and opinion.  There's no wrong or right and every insight is valid and helpful.  There are tons of playstyles out there and tons of reasons for and against based on your own preference.

Now, the game benefits are: more storage space.  Plots for crops.  Spots for trees.  Private animals.

But, really, with lots and lots of bags, I don't really need the storage space.  The trophy case is nice for bragging rights.  Aside from crops, there's nothing I can't stock up on via a walk through the world.

For me, I like having a place to go for logging out.  I enjoy the Harvest Moon aspect of the game.  I really like having a home and decorating it and I hope Tiny Speck adds in furniture and decor and ways to improve and customize housing.  It's more about this is how I like to play rather than in-game benefits.  It's also nice to have a place to host events.

So why buy a home, in your opinion?  Or why not?  Why go homeless?  That's a valid option, too.

  • My home is my castle. I go there whenever I am ready to leave the game, so I know my little Glitchen is safe, clean, dry and warm. That sounds silly, but I really feel better leaving her in my house than on some random street. (yeah, I know she is not there when I leave the game, but in my heart I know she needs a home).

I also leave stuff at home that I do not want to risk losing - like my pickle!

I cannot wait for customizable housing either. I want to decorate!

As far as the crops, now that I am financially secure, it is too much trouble to grow them myself. I buy them from auction, so I can be away from home exploring. Remote herdkeeping will feed the piggies and milk the butteflies for me. The trees do fine too.

  • House + pigs & butterflies + Remote Herdkeeping = a bazzilion meat & milk!! :)

And ofcourse storage. The higher your level the more crap you gather. Before reset I reached level 34 and had piles of emblems, musicblocks, meat & milk in my house. Plus much more...

  • Oh.. I definitely need the storage space. I had millions of bags in beta, and I almost already have all the bags I had then (though I doubt I'll get many more than I had in beta). I like a bag to sort each kind of thing I use regularly. I have a bag for every type of crop, plus a bag for beans and cherries and... The list goes on.  That way I don't have to go gather it all when I need it, and I can spend time gathering it when I want to go out and about into the world.

The biggest thing is that I love having a place that is my very own. My own little place in this Giant world. Getting a house was a priority after reset, and I got my 15k cottage about 5-6 hours after they opened the game for the last test.

I usually log out in my house, and I spend lots of time in my house. I much prefer to do my cooking and grinding and alchemy and whatnot at home (though I don't have a lot of that to do yet). I also love gardening, which is a huge draw for me (I've been doing this a lot while I work on other skills).

It's a place to "recharge" (though I guess my Glitch doesn't need the recharge so much as me), relax and be left alone if I'm not in the mood to run into random Glitches. No one can get to me in my little fortress unless I allow them.

I'm very much like that in RL too. I have to have lots of time alone to "recharge" and be ready to be around people again. I often think of it in terms of a Sim's mood meter going down. I love my coworkers and family and friends, but I hit my fill of socializing far earlier than many. I don't hit that fill as quickly online, since I'm not sitting face to face with them, but still, sometimes you just gotta get away.

  • Thank you for the insights.

Anyone have any counter-points?  Why you chose NOT to buy a house, if you went that route?

  • Everybody needs a home Crifmer.  Being homeless is even more depressing than living in a tiny 1k apartment ^_^.

  • The only reason I can think of not to buy a house is because you don't want to spend the currants on it. There are no negatives to owning a house. I did hear of one person, however, that isn't buying a house or any bags at all, just to try out the challenge of that type of game-play.

  • I had a home before reset and found myself ties to it more than I would like. I didn't yet have the skills to keep animals without having to go back every day or so to feed, pet and nibble them. Growing the crops I needed was useful and having a place to incubate eggs and grow the little fellers was good too.

Unfortunately, I didn't like the required upkeep. This time around I am investing in bigger bags in a bigger way and not planning on buying a home until I can set it on auto-pilot. Is there a machine that will water and pick your crops for you? That would be great.

  • I essentially use my house as a storage shed until I have higher skills, but then it is really useful for meat, grain, milk, etc. But srsly when I first bought a house in beta I didn't even go into it for A MONTH. A MONTH. We haven't even officially been open that long, lmao.

But with TP5 it was so easy to just get there and go wherever so all in all I really like having a house.

  • Where else are you going to throw parties and host secret meetings of the Association for Clean Minds and Mouths? Where else are HQs going to be for your epic pamphlet campaigns?

  • I'm not buying a house, at least in the near future. Currently, the benefits don't interest me that much because I mainly mine, refine, and mix stuff. I'm not thinking of going agriculture anytime soon. But of course, when I get lots of currants to spare, I might as well buy a house simply because I can buy it even though I have little use for it gameplay wise.
