Ramblings from an Old Timer

Gather round my fellow Glitches.
This old timer has a story to tell.

A memory has started to rattle around in my brain again after seeing the Highest Quality #1 "Imported" Glitchmas Yeti the Extremely Rare Items Vendor is selling.

It is a long ago memory.

From before The Great Forgetting ( or the Great Reset depending on how you reckon it).
But it is hard to remember things from before that time, I'm thinking I forgot a lot of things....

*stares off into space*

Anyway it was way back in the year 12, well before we imagined such things as cameras, and quoins gave you something called XP.
I had just popped out of a giant's head... You young-ins these days and your floating island paradise you come from. Back in my day we crawled out of the Ganglion and we liked it that way.

Anyway as I was wiping off the remains of cerebrospinal fluid and staring wide eyed around the world of Ur I heard a voice. I celebrated as the voice commanded and I got a little yeti doll. It was such a curious thing. But all things were new to me then. Cherries, meat from the piggies.... Beans... But as I was collecting these things I began to run out of room.
And the Vendors.. oh the Vendors. They were selling such bright and shiny things. I was tempted to buy these things from them, and the bags they were selling.

But then I did something. Something that will will haunt me for the rest of my days.
I sold that little Yeti doll to the vendor.
Oh and how that floating devil of a Vendor must have laughed as I walked away with my useless trinkets. Knowing... KNOWING what I had just done.

Or maybe I threw it in a Shrine..... So hard to remember these days.... And I think there where two Great Forgettings.. why do I keep forgetting.. how troubling....

Anyway that is my sad tale from that fateful day when I was new and the world didn't work quite as well as it does now.

And as I see all these new faces bounding around this world of ours I wonder, do any of the other Old Timers have a tale to tell of precious items they have lost?

Or we can tell them of when we celebrated the end of the world as we sang Good Night Groddle.

  • I lost an SB music block that had been a gift from a dev in a reset...left it in my house instead of on my person and post-reset, that sucker was GONE.  I gave away my yeti, and no regrets there, but still get a pang about that music block.

When the pangs come,  I try to remember the Glitches I have met who start every day fresh, and give away all the stuffs that they accumulate every day....an admirable way to live, imo. On the other hand, I doubt they ever got handed an SB music block either.

ETA: I suspect all these new folks don't really give a sloth's arse about our old timey bs.  :D

  • Oh Faoan, that must be truly heart wrenching! This cannot compare quite as much but I accidentally threw my much loved GNG in the toilet myself! Ohhh the pitfalls of being entrusted with these wonderous items.. it was quite a silly thing to do.

  • Faoan, that is almost exactly my tale!

I was fresh and new and just figuring out shrines. I wanted to learn some skill quicker... so I tossed my Yeti away.

I like to think somewhere Cosma is cuddling with it while she sleeps....

Weird I swear I'm remembering this right but I was imagined on the 29th and got one. Maybe it all was just a dream....

I think we need to start a support group.

Ouch losing a personal Gift sounds a lot more painful. I always imagine our lost stuff like that in some sort of Digital Room of Requirement. Maybe one day we will find some of our lost stuff :-)

  • sir from the great before times. Your story saddens me i wish i chould help but i am but a humble noob. Jaded in my ways of imagination and instant gratification. I raise a bottle of hooch to you old timer. We all must remember the past as to not repeat it in the present.

  • I made lots of errors in my youth... but the worst of it was probably not falling into Hell enough.

Had I died more in the past, when my Energy was less and croaking was easier, I'd probably have that Dracula badge already - and I'm not even a Zombie yet!

  • Before I knew the Giants were only concerned with cold, hard currantcy value, I donated my Faded Heart.  I thought it was bound to get me very special attention since it took me such great pains to find.  Nope, I think I got 1XP for it and a razz.

  • Heh. I'm not quite as old as you Old Timer, but I remember a time, not so far back (okay, last month) when I spent all my currants on Cauldrons, in the hopes of raising my level faster and faster.
And then the day came when the Giants brought into Ur 3 little Jawas, stolen boldfaced from ol' George himself (Giants bless him for episodes 4 & 5, and curse him for episodes 1-3 & 6).
But it didn't matter. It was too late. All my currants were gone. Gone! And for what? Some black, probably recycled Cauldrons!?! Why do the Giants love them so much anyway?!?
    *Sigh*
So anyway Old Timer, what I seem to miss the most in ol' Ur are the days when my currants were piled high in my /house, tempting me, teasing me to spend them as I resisted.
I also keep kicking myself for my wicked sense of timing.

  • I'm not as old as you Old Timers either... I started just after first Beta.

It really was not so long ago that I crawled out of what I believe was a Brain. The Brain was a nice place, with its glowy blue and red lights, and comforting music. I came across a tree that needed watering, and petting, for some reason. I went out into the world.

I saw a stranger at the end of the road. He was floating. Eager to see what he was for, I clicked on him. I saw the marvelous spread of items before me... and there it was. The 12-Sided Die!

I did not know what it was for. I only knew that I had to have it. So I worked. I don't quite remember how. But I slaved away, to finally gain that incredible amount of currants. (I don't remember the price back then either.) I went back to that same vendor. A Toy Vendor, I had learned. And I bought the 12-Sided Die.

I was so triumphant, so happy to at last hold it in my inventory. Then I Rolled it. And it did nothing. At least, nothing to my bright, baby, Glitchen eyes. Disappointed and disillusioned, I dumped it on the ground.

And that is the tale of my 12-Sided Die.

  • I came onto the scene too late to have gotten a Yeti, and have only lost the pieces of street trophy that I had earned. I thought they would all disappear in the reset so left them all sitting in a cabinet. Wish I had them now, but that's life.

  • It was about a week or two after the strawberry seeds had been made redundant, and I pulled some out of my wardrobe. I'd somehow forgotten the update from weeks before, and...
"Oh, these seeds have spoiled," said I, thinking this was some new thing. "I'd better go vendor them and buy some more..."

NOW THEY GO FOR 300K+ EACH

  • Thank you for the tale, Faoan!

@ Nanookie....I care, I care a lot.  It is part of what makes this game so fun for me.  But, one of the reasons I don't care to buy an old-timey item is that I wasn't there.  I didn't get to have the good night song sung to me.  I didn't worry about when the game would re-open or who and what would still be here.  I know it is a very important thing to those who were around, I just don't feel I should own what meant so much to one player or to a whole group that I never got to be a part of.  It feels like it would be a false memory to me.

I do feel that the stories are important and very special and that the camaraderie among the first beta players is delightful to "see".  Yes, I would love to hold or investigate something so special but I don't want to take away from the old-timers what was a token--a gift to represent the trouble and learning the first beta players went through.  You all Are special and those of you who stuck with the game should have such treasures that every player would want to own.

For, without you, this Ur would be a different place; without you, this Ur would have been much more difficult to imagine and prepare for the hoards of glitchen to come.  And, without the first group of imagineers, this whole place would feel ... wrong, as if the heart of what turns Ur was cold and empty.

I enjoy the stories and the long-ago-built friendships.  I enjoy the bickering and the missing of how it once was.  I enjoy knowing about the special things you received for being part of the core group of builders, testers and players.  I remember the first time I learned what a GNG was and why.  There was a story, there were photos of parties, there were rememberings of what never came back.  I think, at least for me, what makes this kind of story so important and interesting is not the actual story but the ways in which it affected the players.  I'm heart broken at the lost treasures!!  And, to think, all I ever really lost were a few, no, six? eight? alchemical tongs donated because I clicked too fast and a cubimal.  You don't get xp from donating a cubimal; I hadn't known.

I hope more stories do crop up!

  • I retract one thing.  I was overtaken with desire and am now carrying around an old, rusty spigot...er...faucet.  Time for a tetanus shot!!

  • aw Minkey, that was one of the nicest posts I've seen in a long time.

  • fusty faucet!!
Posted 4 months ago by Minkey Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think you get to love the spigot... like an old timer. none of the new "rares" have a story.. yet. the faucet kinda does have more of a history than the rest.. and lucky for the world is one of the not so terribly expensive ones.

by the way.. you have driven me mad with the word faucet.. I cannot type it with out thinking "wtf.. that cannot be spelled correctly" even after ... making sure.

fau·cet/ˈfôsit/Noun:A device by which a flow of liquid or gas from a pipe or container can be controlled; a tap.

    its a bad bad word.
Posted 4 months ago by SideBurns Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It is an amazing word, not to be taken without sincerity.  Today's be-boggling was brought to me by camaraderie although it isn't as fun as faucet!  Faucet is kind of...naughty!

And, now I will go back to turning on the faucet.  Water cannot be wasted fast enough!

  • The only things permanent are the friends we make and the memories we carry of the time we've spent in Ur. Other than this everything else can come and go.

We grasp at rare material (virtual) things in the game hoping they will enable us to stand out. But it is the impressions we have on others that makes us each unique, and distinguishes us as special.

  • Lovely topic!  I'd love to read more stories of the early days, if other "old-timers" would be willing to share?

  • I sold my GNG for 5000 currants back in the day, thinking for some reason we would get more than one.
Posted 4 months ago by Merrylegs Subscriber! | Permalink
  •  I've been luckier than most.  I still have my Alpha Yeti ( which would make an amazing pasta dish don't you think?) and  the GNG to remind me of the End of the World parties. I knew I was unlikely to ever be offered a SB-1 and I'm okay with it. It  has special meaning to those who have them and I feel for Nanookie's loss.

I lost all my old tree poisons and antidotes in the great Cabinet  wipeout. I am amazed at what they sell for now. I also lost some precious notes.  Dusty is a consolation for that.
My heart sang at the sight of the spigot, for it is one of my wishes come true. My spigot now serves coffee in my tower.  It does. If you go there and it doesn't work, it is because I am not there. It is a magic spigot.

     I play for those moments.

  • The SB-1s didn't survive the last reset, no matter where they were kept.  The pieces of street trophy didn't survive either; only the completed trophies did, but staff didn't decide to let us keep them until after the last test had closed... so I'm not the only one who only needed one more piece to complete the last trophy, but figured that it was all moot anyway.  Oops!  Ultimately, though, all of these things are just pixels, and having a picture of one is almost exactly the same as having one.

  • I ain't no Old Timer, but I remember that, as a wee Glitchen still in a single-digit-number level, I was visited by the Rube and traded an Ayn Rand doll.  Strapped for cash and having no clue what it was, I posted it on the Auction House for the base price--a mere 100 currants.  (You can still see the evidence of this bout of naivety on my Glitch Market auction history--scroll aaaaaaaall the way down.)

Many months and rubeweed essences later, I have since gone through the pains to earn enough currants to buy a new one from another player.  For whoever nabbed that doll auction, though, I do hope I made their day.
