  • Shepherdmoon - I agree that her tone was hostile, and that she clearly has a chip on her shoulder about folks older than herself, and many of the other things you say.
But at the same time, the idea ganjaprincess espoused that it's ok to do whatever and be rude, etc. because it's "not real" is wrong. There are real people involved here.

Oh, and to be honest, I've tried to learn to touch type several times. It's a VERY useful skill, but one I cannot seem to get the hang of. I've even tried one of those programs that teaches you to type, and nada. I actually connect the positions of the letters better spatially without trying to link them to individual fingers. It would make chatting easier if I didn't have to look at the keys most of the time, but it's not that crippling for me.
Still, I would suggest that anyone who can learn to touch type should.

  • Hey, I read loads of fiction, too...(and was around for the first TRS-80s when quite young). I love Harry Potter novels but don't think I can turn into a wizard or look for people turning into animals, etc. I get the difference between fantasy and real life. Yet I still think online games qualify as real life in certain senses that I mentioned. I still think having some sense of kindness to those around you counts, even online. Silly me, I guess....

  • Heck, I'm in that category that some people are convinced have a warped view of reality - Steampunk. AND I play old school tabletop style RPG's, where you say what your character is doing verbally, and have to make up stuff.
But you know what? When my RPG chars do mean, rude stuff, I don't expect a good response out of the other characters in the game.

If you want no consequences for rudeness, don't play a game that has real people on the other end.

  • You're all right: even though the game itself isn't real, there are real people behind those avatars, and they all have real feelings. There may be real consequences for your actions when you are dealing with real people (even remotely).

@Murri: I guess you can't teach an old dog new tricks afterall... (I'm just messing with you :). )

  • @shepherdmoon: Hey! Who are you callin' old?!  :P  And really, I'm a cat person. Well, cat/snake. No dogs here.
(I know. And I like it too......)

  • @Murri: I'm confused at the "Yay!"... but that's OK: random "yay's" are always alright in my book.... and I'd be happy to call you an old cat if you'd prefer :). Old cat/snake is a bit cumbersome, but also acceptable ;).

EDIT: Never mind, just saw that you changed the "yay" to "hey". That makes more sense... but it's not as funny, so I don't approve.

  • AND again, it is what is it..... No crying, whining, or getting your knickers twisted. I know whats coming when beta opens..

  • What is that, @tweetypie? A bunch of crying, whining, and getting our knickers twisted?
Posted 20 months ago by Shepherdmoon Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @ Murri, like I previously stated, nothing I said was to be hostile as you put it, and I don't have a "chip on my shoulder". I feel like I'm stating my opinion in a perfectly mature manor, and again haven't mentioned anyone specifically or with anger.

All I'm trying to say is that a lot of you are taking this game a lot more seriously than was meant to be. There is no need for "consequence" of people taking your stuff. No need for "unwritten rules". It's a GAME. You are taking this as if someone stole your stuff in real life- there doesn't need to be consequence. You're playing a game on the internet which is way different than real life. If someone stole my things in real life, hell yeah I would call the police, but not in glitch, much less tell the devs.

The point I've been trying to make is all this drama is not needed. People are going to play the game according to their rules, not the rules people expect them to follow.

Even if you've been playing games like this for most of your life (which again, I kind of doubt, seeing as the internet was accessible to most around the 1990's) you're not really getting the point. I've grown up in a generation where everyone is on the computer, including younger-age children. They're going to play glitch, and you shouldn't get so worked up about how they behave. It's a GAME.

GAME. GAME. GAME. get it?? Don't worry if you don't like people or their behavior. Grow up. Ignore it. Do as adults would do.

  • I keep trying to tell you, @ganjaprincess, that if children play this game there will be certain parents who will get p***ed at the content, seek legal action, and force it to change or shut down. This is NOT a kid's game. Even if you think kids can handle it, there are people with power that do not, and they are the ones that matter.

And by the way, real grown-ups care about being polite to others (or at least they should).

  • Shepherdmoon: :/ I had one of those typo combos that makes an actual word. Eeek! :)
You're right though, it is funnier with a random Yay! in there.

Hmm. I know whose house I'm going to try to get invited into, just so I can snag all her junk. Because, hey, it's just a game, so it won't hurt ganjaprincess if I'm rude and horrible to her.

    Eh, no.
I don't get into organized religion either. I'm just not very good at hypocrisy.
But I think I may actively avoid her in-game.
Posted 20 months ago by Murri Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Oooh, ganjaprincess. I was going to stay out of this, but I can't let that pass.  I'll quote you: "GAME. GAME. GAME. get it?? "  You may not see that as hostile and agressive, but most other people do.  And yes, that results in consequences;  a lot of people just wont want to deal with you. Then "Even if you've been playing games like this for most of your life (which again, I kind of doubt, ".  You dont read that as calling her a liar?   Its time to sit back, re-read the comments here, and think about the various opinions. Bad behavior is *not* to be expected, in life or in a game.  Remember, real people are behind every avatar you see.  I like to treat them the same as I would if I were face to face with them.

  • And I keep trying to say I do not agree.

I don't think parent will take action, and if they do, it's their child's fault for signing up for a game if they are below the age limit (which again, glitch does not currently have). And, again, I do agree most adults care about being polite. I am saying, however, that we are on the internet, and regardless of how people think others should act, they're not always going to behave the way you think they should. And there should not be a consequence (unless it is interfering with many people's gameplay or the like, which this really wasn't). I don't think that "rules" should be made telling people how to act. I think that's unreasonable and ridiculous.

I really don't understand how many of you are interpreting this as real life.. like I honestly don't. Play the game, have fun, ignore people you don't like...that should be the end of it.

  • Sadly, until we have MAJOR and much needed tort reform here in the US, companies like Tiny Speck can be sued by parents because their child signed up to a game and saw adult behavior and were supposedly being influenced by it. And these suits do happen here.
The only defense is a button you must click during signup that says you are ___ age and understand that this game contains adult content and un-moderated language.

You may believe what you want, but reality doesn't really care what you believe.
Of course, your screen name makes it pretty clear what you think of rules, be they right or wrong.
Posted 20 months ago by Murri Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I don't think anyone is interpreting this as real life. Please stop insulting the intelligence of the other posters here. That is part of the reason that your comments are seen as hostile. Even though I agree with much of what you have been saying on some level, I still take great offense at your words because of their combative tone (and prefacing your posts with a disclaimer that you are not trying to offend anyone will not automatically make everything you say unoffensive).

I agree that people should not get as angry as some do in these situations, but I also agree that people in general should try to respect the feelings of others. It is the "Whatever, whatever, I do what I want" (Southpark reference) attitude of the internet that has resulted in some very unfortunate and serious situations, such as people driven to suicide. Please remember that there are human beings on the other end of your internet game interactions: they're not the same as NPC's, and some are more sensitive than others (just like in real life... go figure!)

  • LOL, tweetypie--now we can get into a discussion of alternate realities and quantum probabilities, and "how real is reality, really, when the vast majority of everything we see is actually empty space"? Maybe we shouldn't sweat anything really--we may all just be part of the imagination of some creative giant lazily musing away....
Posted 20 months ago by Shepherdmoon Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Shepherdmoon: printfection.com can do that. :) And you've my permission to use that quote.
If you get rich selling t-shirts with that on it, do send me $20 or something.

And tweetypie, we are as we present ourselves.
If she doesn't want us to think she's engaging in an activity that is illegal without prescription in most states, why have it as her screen name?
Most of the folks with bad enough pain for the prescriptive use don't brag, in my experience.

EDIT: I'm off to get stuff done. I'll be back sometime tomorrow. Don't assume I don't care because I don't reply. :)

  • How simple is the concept, taking without asking = stealing? Someone takes your car and you left your keys in it, is it theft... Yup. Left your car unlocked and had your iPhone stolen, the police will still pursue the suspect. "But officer, it's was just sitting there..", uh huh, the judge is going to laugh at you.

Honestly, the only 'rules' we're discussing are actual simple, common courtesies... something that diminishes in modern culture daily. Etiquette and Customs are *the* defining characteristics of any society, and that includes online social groups and games.

The point of this is, adults can handle learning the local customs and often actively seek to do so when they join a community... and that's what Glitch is, a community. Children can, when they are willing/able... and a huge detriment when they are not. It's not generally the adults kicking your seat at the theater, or talking through the entire show.

Society in general has become so obsessed at catering the the extreme 15%'s that the 70% of us in the middle never seem to matter anymore. The education system caters to the lowest denominator, and for the most part games to too. So we should take a chance and allow 100% of young teens in, hoping for the 15% of young teens who can handle it. That 15% represents roughly 1% of the total population... the 16+ ages represent  almost 80% of the population. Go figure... we're busy trying to console 1% at the expense of the majority, sounds about right.

  • Sheperdmoon, i'm so glad you posted, as an obviously ancient 30 year old I have pictures of me at 4 on our home computer If not for you then I would think those pictures were just the dementia setting in and actually I spent my days as a child learning to carve into stone tablets

Joking aside though, every single aspect of life has unwritten rules and the majority of people either follow them or don't stick around in that community. Therefor whenever someone wants to join in that community but doesn't want to follow the unwritten rules they will be complained about, and that wont change if the unwritten rule breaker is 8 or 80.

It is a shame that some people have been brought up with the notion that they can do what they please online with no consequence. The effect that the internet has had on bullying is horrific, I really hope I manage to instill better values than that into my children. Real people playing in a virtual world are still real people with real feelings, no amount of posting its just a GAME will change that.

I'm not telling people to go out and act ridiculous, I'm saying don't get pissed if they do. This thread is only proving my point and validating what I previously believe. I think many of you are going to be in for a big shock when the game goes beta and you have to deal with 100x the amount of "rude behavior" that you can't stand so much now.

  • WOW - all I can say is the we are truly an opinionated group, some of the opinions may seem strange to me, but often when you aren't talking w/someone face to face it's easy to misunderstand what they are trying to say when all you have to go by is the written word. Trav - I'm very sorry that your gathering was ruined by such an event; you have been a very helpful player and it makes me sad to think that this may ruin that aspect of your gameplay. I feel that you are a very welcome addition to the FS Refugee's group and hope that you continue to interact w/other players as you have in the past. I do have to make a comment too about players behaviour, I understand that Glitch is a game, not real life, but our behaviour in the game does in some way reflect our behaviour in real life. Would I pick up a dollar bill on the sidewalk if I saw it laying there, yes; but if there was someone nearby would I ask if it was their dollar, also yes. I guess for me the same thing applies in the game; yes I have picked up items from the ground, I have also followed a player asking it they meant to drop that item and offering to give it to them. Rude behaviour in the game to me indicates either the player is acting that way because they don't know they are being rude or because they don't care. Just as in FS, some players need to be reminded that what they are doing isn't considered polite game-play. Hopefully, those that know better but choose to act in a rude manner (not referring to anyone in this discussion specifically) will get bored w/the game and leave sooner rather than later.

  • "I'm saying don't get pissed if they do."

I'm saying go ahead and get mad, put them on your enemy list, etc., but try your best to avoid lashing out.  Devs won't sit on a yoinker, but they have and will sit on a temper.  Yoinking is within the rules since it ceases to be mine when it hits the ground. Insults and yelling and such at the yoinker are not except for something like kicking them out of a group over it.

+1 to Trav for the last comment.
Posted 20 months ago by Holly Waterfall Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Block button or not, a temper on display is not within the real game rules.  I may lose my account if I can't control myself and keep going off on yoinkers.  Or, maybe it's a good way to finally get to visit the interrogation room. :)

I doubt that the devs care what social rules we make just as long as we don't cross their rules.

  • ganjaprincess: just to clear this up, there IS definitely an age limit. I promise you, I know. And the truth is, there are people behind those avatars, people who have spent time and energy on obtaining items, and it is, like it or not, rude to take those things away from them. That's just the way it is, and it's unfair and untrue to excuse that by saying it's "just a game." No one is planning to file a lawsuit, no one is trying to take RL legal action for stealing an item, but it's perfectly reasonable to request to keep the items you have worked for.

  • No worries Giz, I'm a stubborn mule and set in my ways. I can't help but want to help people, and I'm not the type to take the actions of one out on the whole. It does change my play style a bit, but no more than the typical adjustments I have to make in a 'hostile' game. Gotta turn on the WoW skills and always look over my shoulder, never do more than I can immediately pick up, and be ultra-paranoid about who I let in my house. You'll still get run by moonings, and odd gifts when I'm feeling spunky, and lots and lots of tips. Just perhaps on a more selective basis.

As for ganja's statement, the kids WILL happen. They do, it's the nature of the internet. I've been watching tweens beg in common spaces, grab everything in sight, and make a mess for everyone for 20+ years now.... *my* first online games were play-by-post because the internet was in its infancy. (I literally did a backflip when I got my first 14.4 modem, a HUGE upgrade from my 9.6) I don't expect it will change. I *do* expect that if/when the kiddie behavior (but I want a snooooo connnneee) starts to cause a wider deterioration of the community (and it will because THAT is the natural effect) that the dev's will come up with a solution... they always do.

  • I agree Joo, both on the internet and in life. The only way to maintain a good culture in either environment is a strong community.

A strong community means neighbors saying something when you've left your trash can out for a few days, someone getting pissy if you haven't cut your grass for a month, or the HOA getting involved when you want to paint your house a bright pink. In the real world people speak out against bad behavior in their community, if the whole world were silent, and the whole community adopted the bad behaviors, every city would be a ghetto. Don't believe me, watch someone perfectly normal have to go into Section 8 housing (for those in the UK think Council Estate). Within a year they're either paranoid and constantly on the look out for trouble, or they've become part of the trouble itself.

Bad behavior spreads, both in life and on the internet (moreso on the internet because of the anonimity) when someone stands by and just watches. I'm partial to the quote:
"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."
Posted 20 months ago by Travinara Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Well said, Travinara - already we have a good community, and I do not want to see other people ruin that as I have seen in other games.

The devs should maybe think about appointing admins here in the forum before it gets too unwieldy, as a lot of what happens in the game starts here.  At the minute it is fine, and is self policed, but ultimately there will be trolls and nastiness - that is the way of it.  It is easier to do it now before the floodgates open, so people know there are admins on the board keeping an eye.  Just my 2 cents worth.
Posted 20 months ago by riscy Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The dev's do monitor what goes on here, and have been known to pull intentionally inflammatory posts. In general though, they're pretty relaxed and let us debate. They'll eventually need someone, but when the world is live the Forums are less frequently used... hopefully that reduces the creative resource drain on the creators, because moderating a forum can become a full-time job.

Edit: Cupcake, I know you're getting lumped in with a bunch of stereotypes. I just wanted you to know that you and Ani make me less fearful of retirement... there *are* some very competent people in your age group. Just gotta wait for the rest of em to catch up :)

I'm sure its on wikipedia but the theory goes something like this.  When a really juicy argument in a discussion forum gets going, someone at some point will make a comparrison about the Nazis or Hitler.  I've followed this thread and no-one had so far.  I've now mentioned them which therefore means that Godwin's law has been proved and we can now stop this thread and never mention it again..........................
