less than symbol in chat and forum causes blank post after symbol

Hi, in IE 8, Win 7, if you use the less than symbol in chat or the forum, any text after the symbol doesn't display. There are people who use the less than and more than symbols as pseudo-tags for emotions or actions so this may cause problems.

It also doesn't display in the forum as I just previewed this and had to rewrite half the post as it disappeared.

  • The '<' doesn't show up in chat because it is used for chat commands. <i> for example italicizes the following text.
In the forums it is used for HTML coding.

  • you also can't use a backslash / in chat,  or ampersands in names of things, all for the reason, I imagine.

  • / actually *can* be used in chat, but not if it's at the beginning of a line of text. I'm not sure what you mean about ampersands in names of things though, shexycorin.

  • Millie, I think she's referring to bag and animal names, which is true. My bags ended up with a lot of "n"s in them for this reason, e.g. "Beans n Cherries n Milx."

/ is used for commands, just like oldschool IRC! Except the only command right now is /who.

  • Ah, that makes sense. Seems obvious in hindsight. :p
    Thanks, Sheepy!

  • Ah, hadn't realised HTML was used in the chat window, unusual to see that.  Hope scripting is turned off.

  • More likely it's just the code they use to make changes to text in the chat window (bold/colored user names, god's box etc...) and not actual HTML.
