Bad auction sportsmanship

I'm not a message board tantrum thrower, but I do think this should be just posted... I'm not a fan of allowing people to auction broken goods unless we can see their quality first. Today, I bought a Tinkertool from Electron for almost what I'd have paid a vendor (450) and it was completely broken. What's next - partially bitten fruits, sipped drinks?

Just want the devs to rethink this one. If people can sell broken things, it should at least have an indication that something's wrong with it. It's just bad form. I would have bought the more expensive one from the other guy.

  • Totally agree. Once a tool is broken, I think it should have a different title - "Broken Tinkertool", "Broken Grinder", etc. That would at least allow it to be identified in an auction - if auctions of these items should be allowed at all.

Alternatively, I know that multi-use items (like powders) now show their level of use when they're auctioned - could anything similar be implemented for tools? Even just a little progress bar underneath the picture, like it's displayed in your inventory, would be useful.

  • +1 for Tally's comments.

I auctioned two broken tinkertools yesterday... When I put them up for auction, they looked whole. I wondered if they would be whole or broken when the buyers received them. I'm glad I sold them for 300, so hopefully the buyers didn't feel completely ripped off. :(

  • Tools don't show their level of use in the auction? Ouch. Yeah, there has to be an indicator of the condition tools are in.

  • Before I got Tinkering, I used to use a Tinkertool until it was almost worn out, then I sold it back to a vendor and bought a new one.

I was also wondering if there was going to be any further refinements to auctions, like a feedback system or way to keep track of how much things have sold for.

  • I'm with Spellbound - I'm all for free market economics... if people want to post things at outrageous prices and people want to buy them, we shouldn't interfere. But if there's no way to tell the difference between a new, a broken and a slightly used tool then the auction system is, itself, broken.

There's a quest or two that requires you to work with broken tools, so it seems valid that you should be able to auction them in case someone wants one. Just needs a "(14/200)" indicator on the auction, same system as firefly jars.

Something for the Dev's todo list I think.

  • Yes, this has been on the to do list too long. We'll make it right — apologies!

  • Honestly, I'm surprised that someone couldn't find a friend to repair their tools for them if they were not able to do so themselves- let alone think it okay to auction the damaged item off.

  • I have to be honest...the tinkertool thing wouldn't really bother me...it's really not that hard to repair any tool and doesn't take that much energy. It's more of a concern that e.g. jars of powder don't show how many doses left...or jars of fireflies.

It's legitimate to sell empty firefly jars as people might want them to catch flies, as well as full or partially full jars...but to my mind the value of a full jar would be masses more...and I don't believe you can see that at all.

  • @violet...  the firefly jars on auction *do* show how many fireflies are in the jar!

Glad to know that the other stuff is on the "to do" list!

    Thanks stoot!

  • Ooh goody - did that change at some point in the past few weeks or did i just not look properly in the first place?!

  • I don't see the difference of the tinker tool and the jars of powder. Either way you are paying for something that looks usable in the same capacity as another thing, only it's not. And by the way, even if I knew how to fix my tinker tool, it still doesn't matter. I bought a broken tool for the same price (-49 currants) as a new one from a vendor. That is just low.

Let's not split hairs based on our levels and skills. Its a matter of auction principle.

    Thanks @stoot.
