  • "Since 2012 will be the year of the dragon, I have a feeling that the stony sentry of Unnu Slight will be stirring tomorrow, awaiting your stories from 2011, your confessions, your resolutions, and maybe even the odd request.

But that's tomorrow. Tonight is the night, and apparently a not-insignificant number of you will be celebrating the New Years right in the game. So, we've set up a small surprise for anyone who happens to be living it up in Ur at the stroke of midnight (Pacific Standard Time, as always)."
    Original Thread

They didn't say they were giving away anything on the Stroke of Midnight. They didn't even have to do anything, many games don't. And most, if anything, would probably be tomorrow during the actual day of New Years. Anyways, maybe keep an eye out on any of the mail frogs, drop in to Unnu Slight to see if the Dragon is walking around?

  • I totally agree... I didn't sleep, I stayed awake till it was 6 am here to see crashy sparkles... It is seriously disappointing though...It was fun in the other hand, it was! I loved how there were so many people I've never saw before and all. But I guess we all just put our hopes a bit up.

  • I liked them, but I only stayed up until midnight.  It was cool seeing so many people on the Dragon's head, one of my favorite places on Ur.  Usually sparkles are only shared in small groups so it was pretty sweet to share them with so many.

  • It was an experience I'm glad I didn't miss!  Yes, it was just a tiny bit disappointing.  I was hoping to see the Blimps again.  It was, however, something that was amazing and may never be seen again.  I'll never forget it!

I had a hard time getting there because my cable was knocked out at Midnight EST when a neighbor shot off some rockets.  I was surprised that the company fixed it so quickly and I was back in game with about 20 minutes to spare.  The huge crowd, actions and chat all contributed to the failure of Firefox at Midnight but I was able to reload and catch the end of the Sparkles.  Thanks to all who attended!

  • Well said, webweaver <3.  I thought the sparkles giving the fireworks effect combined with all the rainbows was lovely.  Thanks TS and happy new year everyone!

Please also remember that TS staff are having their own holidays and celebrations. It was nice of them to even think of putting something on.
Posted 12 months ago by Oristia Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Just my perspective, but I thought that the stickied forum post about the event (as well as the significance of the holiday) meant that something somewhat interesting or new would occur at midnight.

The sparkles were disappointing for me. If that means I'm a crappy person or that I do not deserve to have anything, so beit.

  • I don't think the Dutch proverb applies here.
Quoting that proverb suggests that those of us that were underwhelmed are asking for too much or are unrealistic in our expectations or ungrateful.
I expect a lot from Tiny Speck because for the last year that I have been playing this game they have over delivered in almost every way, in many ways I never thought possible. In this case I think they missed a great chance to do something really special. I'll bet they have their reasons and I'll bet those reasons are pretty darn good. Nonetheless, two seconds of global sparkly to me seemed like an underachievement. I bet Stoot agrees.

We are in Beta guys. You don't have to sugar-coat things. If you don't like something or have suggestions for improvement please speak up.

  • Maybe they are toning down the special holiday items due to the negative feedback that was floating around about items that new players can't get without buying them (this is less prevalent now than it has been in recent months).

I mean personally I disagree with that feedback and think it is cool that there are things too rare for me to have--I feel sort of like it's the way it SHOULD be unless I work extremely hard and am extremely lucky enough to find one on sale. But there were a lot of people saying that it was sad and it is unfair. Unfortunately, to have fewer "unfair" unattainable objects, you have fewer special objects.

Alternatively maybe it is so we see what it looks like without the special objects and are happy when they come back.

  • re:  Oristia "It was nice of them to even think of putting something on."

We know the devs can schedule events ahead of time though, and Kukubee once told us that they have firework artwork ready, so, I too feel this was a little bit of a let down considering how much better it could have been, having been there for past special events (yeti, etc.):(

  • It was a crisis and panic of epic proportions for me.  It was so crowded that there was mega-lag.  Then I made the mistake of Admiring my beta pickle.  It dropped to the ground and sat there for many minutes, not doing anything but impossible to pick up.  All kinds of 'folks' sorta gathered around it, every one I am sure with the kindly intent (yeah) of picking it up to give back to me.  Thankfully it was 'locked,' but my experience for the rest of the event was sweating and panicking while I waited for it to do ANYTHING.  Eventually it granted me the Comedian buff and went back where it belonged in my bag.

I know now why I am not much of a party buff.  The crowds really weren't much fun for me, even before the pickle crisis.  I'm not really a lag fan.

  • I am horrified at the attitudes displayed by the whiners in this thread.  Nowhere did Blanky or any other staff member suggest that you cancel all other New Years plans to be there for the event of the century.  She said they understood that many players would be on anyway, so the devs decided to add to the celebration.  There was no suggestion of a party at the dragon's head.  As usual, too many people read into the post what they wanted to hear and it took off from there.

If I had a friend say "hey, if you are around at midnight, I have something special planned" and I happened to be around, I would enjoy it.  Even if it were not my dream come true.  Even if it were not all that I hoped for.  Even if it were not what I would call spectacular.  I would thank my friend, and enjoy the moment and the fact that I have people I enjoy being around.  I would NEVER snipe that he did not meet my expectations or whine that I feel deprived.  I would be thankful I have friends who want to share a moment of pleasure with me.  Small moments of fun are what make each day a new adventure.

So stop being spoiled, ungrateful brats and get on with your lives.  Don't contaminate everyone else.  And don't ever come to my parties as I am SURE you will be disappointed.

  • I am horrified at the attitudes displayed by the whiners who are whining about whiners in this thread.  When you see a thread veering negative, don't just pile on your own special sauce.  Nobody is going to 'correct' their behavior, certainly not retroactively by editing their prior post, due to remorse after a 'good scolding' from somebody whining about their whining.  If it feels 'good' to self-righteously scold everyone else because  YOU would never behave in a particular fashion, by all means do so, I suppose.  Parade what a wondeful person you are.

Who wants to go off about whiners whining about whiners whining about whiners next?

  • Brib, thanks for posting the pictures!  Looks like those of you folks that love the big parties had a blast!  I am personally glad that I didn't try to stay up for it, since I'm not really a party person in game due to the lag.  Glad to see 'my' nothing there street (only one I have a name on for 'unlocking') is such a hit.

Was thinking when Blanky said a SMALL Surprise that it would be something like a global sparkles session, so I guess I don't get why folks are so 'disappointed' - there was a big party and TS did a little something special (which doesn't happen daily).  But to each his own...

Though I will admit that when I went to sleep, I was hoping that I didn't miss something bigger like a darkening of the skies across Ur with a special fireworks show set to the tune of Prisencolinensinainciusol, since I missed that easter egg release the first time, and still regret it.  If figured if I had been up at 3am, I'd have logged in...but I wasn't...glad I didn't miss anything major, but it still would have been cool to see the global sparkles...

Love that they even did anything for the New Year...maybe next year, they could celebrate it by doing sparkles for every time zone change (once they fix the crashes)...so we could celebrate with our friends during their actual NYE/Day half the world away... ;)

  • I think that God was a big teas and a bit lazy last night. He told us several times that it was gona be something special and worth staying up late. The flash crashes were terrible. I had to reload 5 times and stressed out thinking I was gona miss something big and showy. He could have at the very least colored the thirty seconds of plain sparkles. I wish that I had slept though the event and not been disappointed. Later,

  • I understand that it's the holidays and TS was off. I also know that they didn't have to do anything. But I kinda feel cheated. I felt a little cheated at christmas too. I kept hoping and waiting for a limited edition doll or toy. For me, it's more than an object- it's a statement. "I was there during this special time and here is a token. something few others will get." Alpha got yetis. we got a party space. kinda feels unbalanced to me. I'll continue to hold out hope for something special today or tomorrow, but that hope is very small right now.

In spite of the let down, I am looking forward to this year. Happy new year everyone :)
Posted 12 months ago by bored no more Subscriber! | Permalink
  • In what way were people cheated? I understand that maybe you had higher expectations, but a "small surprise" does not imply that there was going to be anything extraordinary. Tiny Speck wasn't telling you to cancel all your plans and camp out all night, whether or not you did. You'll notice Blanky said, "So, we've set up a small surprise for anyone who happens to be living it up in Ur at the stroke of midnight." Who happens to be in Ur. Not "stay in Ur if your life depends on it or else you'll miss out on the biggest event of your life."Just because some people tend to get carried away when they hope something big will happen doesn't mean it's TS's responsibility to live up to that. The point of it was that they noticed some people had plans to stick around and party for New Year's, so they wanted to contribute to that and offer a few free sparklies.

    Happy new year!

  • I thought it was really nice :)

I admit, I was hoping for a 2011 Glitchmas Yeti just because I love yetis, but I wasn't disappointed when I got a free cracker, and I wasn't disappointed when I got the sparkles at midnight PST, either.  I had just gotten home from toasting the new year with friends and family, and it was a sweet gesture on TS's part.

  • I think the mistake may have been announcing it first. If the sparkles had just arrived with no warning everyone would have been excited. It was an easy time of day for me, I'm not bothered about special items, and I thought all the people together was fun, but the sticky did suggest more might happen and I do feel for the people who stayed up for hours!

It's a credit to TS that people were so excited. Not just all the new stuff that has turned up in the game in the 6 months I've been playing, but the open dialogue with staff and superfast responses to bugs, suggestions, queries, problems have contributed to an extremely high level of expectation. And long may it continue!

  • they probably should have re-processed the sparkly effects to make it multicoloured and extended the length a bit. maybe added confetti or something. just a re-skin of the existing effect probably would have been enough of a novelty for most people.

not that i was disappointed, it was awesome to see all the glitches crawling all over the dragon, firing off their last glitchmas crackers and hammering the servers and game clients. reminded me of beta 1.0 EOTW parties. i actually missed the sparkles coz i paused my movie on the part where time stops and ran outside into our alley to watch the Space Needle explode!

    anywayyyys ..

future suggestion to tiny speck for 'events' type stuff, to enhance the sense of novelty ..

    "when in doubt, re-skin it"

print that in reeeely big letters and pin it to a board somewheres, coz it'll save you a lot of future grief methinks.

oh and happy new year everyone! : ]

  • @Parrow Gnolle - I am now contemplating the set of all sets that do not contain themselves.
Posted 12 months ago by Splendora Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think people are allowed to express disappointment without other people telling them they are horrible people for feeling that disappointment. Just FWIW.

You can feel disappointed without being ungrateful at the same time. You can feel disappointed while still appreciating that a gesture, albeit a small (and laggy) one, was made.

It's like getting a holiday present you really aren't crazy about: You may not need or want those chartreuse and orange plaid socks, but the gesture made by the person giving you something is still a nice gesture and appreciated, even if the socks are terribly disappointing (and ugly and unfashionable) and even if someone who opened an earlier gift from the same person got something a lot nicer than you did (a Kindle Fire?). You can be thankful for the kind gesture, and for being remembered at holiday gift giving time, while not being all that excited about the gift itself.

The only etiquette faux pas here, if any, is complaining about the gift where the gift-giver might see it and get his or her feelings hurt. :)

  • I think many are disappointed with both Xmas and New Years. I think being in beta again is rough as it is, but adding to not even getting a special one time gift like the yeti or anything like that has been heaps disappointing. It is like getting coal in your socks for being a bad Glitch...in a way feels punishing.

I am sure that TS meant well but yeah I can understand the disappointments and there is nothing wrong in feeling disappointed.

  • first I felt disappointed. then I felt rotten for feeling disappointed. then I felt slightly better about my original feelings. lol what a rollercoaster start to my new year.

There are so many differing views, yet I understand them all. it's nice that these arguments are so thought out. I always hate to see differing opinions in the forums, but at least there is a level of understanding :)

  • My husband stayed up 2 hours later than he wanted to so he could wake me up at 3 AM to attend the new year's celebrations--My daughter then woke me up for the rest of the day around 7 AM. (I think having it at midnight Eastern time would have been more fair for everyone). I was disappointed that the animation we saw was the exact same animation I could very easily see myself at any time by activating a sparkly powder. I would have preferred something special, even if it was the same thing but with different colors.

All the same, I enjoyed wishing my friends happy new year at the time, regardless of how dog-tired I was. Glitch is still by far the best game around and I feel very privileged to have found it.
