Personal Accounts and Experiences from The Amazing Race

Upon Soupie's request, I decided to post this here.
If you were in The Amazing Race and want to post your own experiences here, please do! We'd all like to see what happened!

AwesomeCardinal2000:

I started in Anrasan Glance and when I heard the first clue, it referred to Friendly, so I thought it was in Nightshade Woods cause I knew Friendly was nocturnal. But it was actually referring to UNCLE Friendly. Then I noticed the other contestants are around Guillermo Gamera Way, so I went there. Then I went into Uncle Friendly's Emporium. I gave Soupie the hot pepper requested and she gave me the next clue. It was referring to a southern street in Kalavana. So I went through Chakra Phool to get there instead of Jethimadh, like a lot of people did, so I got there faster. And I was busy searching for that "southernmost street" and I even passed the referee without noticing. When I finally came back, I was just standing there because the referee didn't greet me. So I didn't know I was supposed to give her the full firefly jar. After a while, I finally gave it to her cause I thought that if the referee didn't do anything, I was just supposed to give it to her.
Clue number 3 was about the crab in Groddle Forest. It led to Scribe's Weald in Groddle Forest. I had to go back to my house to give the referee the bubbles. And once I gave them to her, I was confused because the ref wasn't giving me the next clue. I thought that someone had told the ref that I had cheated! Later on, I learned that there were certain waits at certain points.
Clue number 4 led to Dobak Fathom. It was really easy to come off of. It surprised me that people were asking me for help on that one after I finished.
Clue 5 said someting about "You may have to holler to be heard." I searched "holler" and it came up with Nowaa Holler in Muufo. As I raced out of the Caverns, I saw Cole Frehlen racing next to me. He was using hairball or something to catch up with me. As I went into the subway, I somehow lost him. As I got out of the Mallos Means subway station, I was going the wrong way to the spot! So it wasted a lot of time and Cole Frehlen passed me.

  • thanks AwesomeCardinal!  We knew some of the questions would be tricky and may have more than one answer--felt that added to the problem solving. :)  As for checkpoint #2, good power of deduction just handing to her!  If you think greeting would be helpful in future races, we can definitely add it! Checkpoint#3-you got one of the 2 dreaded yields where you had to wait 3 minutes!  We'll definitely make sure it is better communicated if we use them next time! :)  Congrats on the win!  Even knowing the answers, I sometimes found it tricky when doing the test runs (i got lost like 3 times!) lol.

  • I never even made it to the first checkpoint. When I read the clue "where Friendly resides" it never even entered my mind that it would be Uncle Friendly! So I headed to find Dick Dastardly, who has a very fitting name indeed because he gave me a blue-white hexagon key. "I know where that comes from, Sinig Safes"! So I walked all the way from Tamila to Pollokoo, only to find the keyspot empty. Then I tried the door that the key goes to in Ajibo Hood. Hmm, not in Kristel Khaos either. I thought it must be the Friendly shrine that has that beautiful beam of light over it somewhere in the caverns but couldn't remember where I'd seen it. It was then that Soupie told us it was Uncle Friendly she was referring to, not the Giant. I was in Sambossa Bossa, too far from any subway station to stand a chance, plus my grandson was here and I wanted to hang out with him for awhile before his bedtime.
So that is the tale of how Bruja never even made it to checkpoint #1 :(
And D.D., next time I will not go looking for you unless it's for a real good splanking, you naughty glitch you.

  • aww Bruja--sorry you got sidetracked!  That Dick Dastardly...he's led many people astray!

To solve the mystery of why he handed you a key--the final checkpoint was Kristel Kaos.  Those that got a key from D.D. would have saved themselves the time of waiting for a keyspawn towards the end :)

  • I started at the subway station in Salatu. When I heard the first clue, I quickly made the requested hot pepper and then headed to the train. Since the clue requested pepper, I assumed the ref would be in Ix, so I went there. I totally blanked on the Uncle Friendly of clue one part and headed to a Friendly shrine instead. Duh, that didn't work. And then, like a true ADD Glitch, I heard about Dick Dastardly and instead of figuring out the first clue (I was one street away!), I went to find Dick. I thought maybe he'd give me something awesome like a pass to skip a clue. Instead it was a key I already owned. Dangit.

From there it all went downhill. I finally got back to Uncle Friendly's and then headed down to Kalvana. I couldn't find the ref there and then they announced the ref had left because so many Glitchen were onto other clues.Derp.

I did finally find the third clue. The fourth and fifth were easy and I found them quickly in Groddle Forest and then Ilmenskie Deeps. I knew just where the sixth clue was and was headed that way when they announced that a winner was found.

I tried to continue the race and be awesome, but everyone was at the party and I was jealous. So, I gave up and partied instead!

I had a ton of fun, and if I get the chance to race again, I will definitely not make the same mistakes twice! :)

  • AHA! Dick Dastardly strikes again!! For some the key might have helped..for others, not so much.  Oh those pesky Detours..are they worth it? muahaha!

As for the ref leaving--that's an unfortunate instance where she had to be in 2 places at once (we were short some refs!).  Ideally, I'd like the refs to be able to stay until all players pass through--but we had so many people get off track or quit in the middle of the game, it was hard to tell if any more people were coming! :D

And you WERE awesome! You made it through the absolute hardest parts of the race--congrats to you for sticking it out!

  • Oh I'm not upset about the ref leaving! Just made it a little harder to find the clue. When the ref was on the street, I could run straight to that person and see if they were in black and yellow stripes. But without them there, it just took a little longer to find the clue. I understand though. You guys did great.

  • Forgot to say big thanks to Soupie and all the volunteers for putting this together, it was a lot of fun even though I didn't get very far! Next time, I'll try and stick it out 'til the end so that I can at least show up at the party to offer my thanks to the organizers and congratulations to the winner. Which reminds me: Congrats AC2000, you're one fast and clever cookie!

  • There were times when I was munching hairball, imbibing potions, and activating spinach all at the same time!  I was pretty laggy a lot of the time though, it was crazy.  I know at one point I had to restart my browser :/

  • What is this race....sounds amazing :P. Is there a group? There is no group that has "amazing race" in it. I hope there will be more.

  • I had an amazing experience during the Amazing Race! Thanks so much to Soupie and the refs! Now I wanna describe my experience.

At first it was totally easy. I just knew where everything was the second I got it, and it was a breeze. Until the fifth clue.
    Now, don't ask me how I got so turned around. I don't quite know. The note said something like, "At this street you'll have to holler". Instead of choosing the obvious, Nowaa Holler, I picked Kristel Kaos, because my brain was like, "Hollering=Chaos=Kristel Kaos". So, I went there, and there was a ref! I handed her the stack of planks, like the note said. But then the ref said this;
"Which clue are you on?" And when I replied that I was on clue five, she said, "You're at the wrong place!" She handed me back my planks, and I rushed to Nowaa Holler in record time, and raced back to Kristel Kaos in time to get fifth place. :D

  • Soupie, I think you deserve a special TS prize for this.  I have zero influence on the giving of special TS prizes, but  I can still wish it for you.

  • I think more than 20 people should be able to play as many people probably didn't get to play. I know this would make it a lot harder but maybe having less races and more people per race. Also....did you only do 20 people because of the cost (can't think of anything you would have to buy) or planning time/easier for refs?
Posted 9 months ago by Paxton Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Paxton-In the end, we allowed for more than 20 people (in fact, everyone that signed up before the deadline was invited to play-It ended up being 23 people invited although only about 13 showed up).

The problem with more people is that we saw drastically different race times.  We had to keep the number of participants down to a manageable amount that we could keep track of amongst the hectic aspects of the race.  There were people heading to the finish line before others even made it to the first checkpoint (which is fine..everyone did awesome!!). Some people even had to drop out in the middle of the game.  That could have left refs standing at checkpoints all nite trying to track down whether or not more people were headed their way. And well, in keeping with the real Amazing Race, they also have a limited number of participants :)

Not sure what you mean by less races with more people per race.  The Amazing race is one race, with multiple legs.  If anything, adding additional people to the race would require us to add *more* legs and eliminate people at each checkpoint.  Think of our race as one episode of the TV show--they have to go multiple places and do multiple things all en route to their final destination for that episode. No eliminations are done during the episode (except for the last person to arrive at the last stop, and even then only sometimes)

  • Congrats on a successful race, and a successful Glitch first of it's type adventure.  Great job Soupie, all the helpers, and all the participants!

Sounds like loads of fun, and maybe next time I'll try to play...
