Will fireflies (in bog houses) convey over when the Big Move comes?

I share access to a bog house with three friends, and one thing that we've all enjoyed doing is catching fireflies and setting them free there, to form an enormous cloud over the herb patches.

Two questions:

(1) Will fireflies count as either "animals" or "possessions", and thereby get moved over to our new accommodations when the housing change occurs?

(2) Will the new housing allow (possibly if certain environmental conditions are met in the room/area, like darkness/bogginess) for firefly release?  It's such a nice upside to bog-house living :)

(I realize that fireflies are an odd duck in a way -- they're a resource AND an animal, and since, unlike most resources, they can be collected and set free in your home, I'm trying to figure out whether we should all start a frantic firefly-collecting spree in the basement when the announcement comes that the housing change is imminent!)

Thanks much!

  • Fireflies are like an animal in real life but in Glitch they (so far) are a resource only and cannot be moved from house to house. They can only be set free in your home because the swarm exists there, and they effectively become part of that swarm when they are released, until you capture them again (i.e. when you release them, you no longer own them).  They spawn and are not created, grown, or maintained by player interaction. In my mind that means they will not move with you, but there is the possibility that you will be able to add fireflies to your new house at some point, if you imagine a suitable place for them.  You could, however capture some of your fireflies in a jar, and release them in your new house once you've imagined a new swarm. :)

  • my guess is that you will have to imagine firefly swarmability, just like you will have to imagine having a dark patch or an herb patch or a veggie patch.

But of course I also have to agree with Shiromisa Kaya who puts it very well....

ETA: Miel says it very well too :)

  • I think that you'll have to imagine a firefly swarm in your new house.

  • You can put them in a jar and take them with you!

  • *nods*  Makes sense -- I'll just plan for all of us to do a mass firefly-catching after we've received notice of the housing changeover date.

It's a little bit of a bummer because it costs energy to whistle to catch them outside, and then it costs energy to release them INSIDE (you have to be clever about where you open the jar so that it doesn't fill right back up again, since there's no "open and release" option -- you have to open and whistle), and now it's going to cost a total of twice as much energy as has already been spent, to catch them again and release them again in the new place, assuming they wind up being releasable.

I'm going to toddle over to the "Ideas" forum and ask if perhaps there can be an "open and release" option for fireflies inside your house (in a suitable area), which would at least reduce the energy drain for this particular project (and would make aggregating fireflies more fun, since once you have a whole bunch of them, it's hard NOT to catch them when you open the jar!)

What can I say? I like fireflies! :D

  • Pictures of your massive firefly swarm? :) I've never seen multiple catches all together at once.

They're actually a little more impressive when they're clumped, like this (fewer fireflies at the time, but the swarm is more closely-spaced):

  • I might have to try this before I am ever-evicted from my comfy bog home! Thanks Ashbet :)

  • Awwwwh, that's cute! I hope we do get to keep fireflies in our new houses.

  • I predict fireflies will be very valuable when the new order is ushered in.  Hang onto them!

  • If you like the idea, please drop a comment on the post in the Ideas forum so that the devs know that this is something we want? :)

  • I'm in favor of a "catch and release" option for fireflies, where opening the jar didn't automatically trigger the whistling action (or if you could stop whistling immediately, like you can with most other actions using the "x"), so that they can be released in your home without the energy drain of the entire firefly-catching-attempt whistle.

I have a feeling that this is something that users have figured out how to do that isn't necessarily intended by the devs (I got the idea from Vera Strange!), but it would be a really nice functionality to add to the new housing.

  • Oh Ashbet2, your fireflies are SO pretty!  I love that you've added to your swarm. Really sweet. I can see why you're attached to them. :)

  • I think this would be really awesome -- I've always admired fireflies in other people's houses, and I'd like to have a collection of my own at some point -- so I really don't want to see people losing the fireflies they've nurtured and collected.

  • Huh, I had no idea that you could add to your swarm. In fact, I thought I read somewhere that fireflies released from a jar *didn't* go into the swarm.

    Cool to know!

  • love the fireflies!
please save them as an aspect to the new houses !
*waves at ashbet! * I also cross posted in ideas forum .

  • Maybe the fireflies can be crushed into crystals when the 'big conversion' hits.  I always like that crystallization process.  Crush!  Whoosh!  Crystals!
Posted 10 months ago by Kalstept Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Oh nooooeesss!!!  No crushing! D:

(I have plenty of crystals, but I get the guilts about turning lovely dancing fireflies into inanimate objects with no real purpose as of yet . . . so I'd much rather have them swirling free in my house, keeping me company!)

  • If free-flying fireflies can't be conveyed, can they perhaps be converted into an equivalent number of full Firefly Jars, so that we can decide what to do with them after the Big Move?
