A lot more taking than giving recently?

It seems that every time I go to the good secret hiding spots (except for one that is still goid), everything is gone. People even take the notes I leave that say take something and leave something. I hve no idea why they would even take the note!

It really discourages me from putting things in those certain places when that happens. Has anyone else noticed this trend or is it just me since I go to certain hiding spots all of the time to put stuff there? I've been dropping things in different random spots recently instead of those spots. Except for the one spot that I hope won't get ruined.

  • You mean the notes aren't presents, too?  They're worth 3 currants each!

But seriously... if you have left things, notes or otherwise, for other people to take, why are you complaining that they've been taken?

  • Someone posted that its prob newbies taking stuff and i disagree.

I think newer players r less likely to take stuff without leaving something behind. In my experience, new players r always generous with their limited items, when I've helped them (which I promptly return and advise they keep it for later). Also newbies seem more cautious about rules and making mistakes. I think greedy glitches r to blame...prob hoping to make a quick buck.

I too love hiding stuff for others to find, and often find my notes have disappeared...won't stop leaving fun stuff behind tho.

  • Once you drop something and walk away from it, you are at the mercy of the whims of other players you probably do not know and, if you drop an edible item, any hungry piggies in the area.

If you are dropping stuff simply to be generous and to delight another player, keep doing that and you will continue to get enjoyment out of the act of giving.

If you are dropping stuff for any other reason (including promoting the idea of giving), you are probably going to be annoyed if someone takes what you gave.

Leave notes with the expectation that notes can be taken and can decay and vanish. To do otherwise sets yourself up for disappointment and frustration.

I drop stuff on a daily basis, but do so on a whim. Right now, there are two or three caches of stuff I have hidden that have not yet been discovered and I happen to wander those streets daily. When they are found, I will not be bothered if they clean the spot out.

Sometimes I leave a note, sometimes I don't. I cut back on note-leaving when I realized that I'd often later find the items gone but the note I wrote left behind. I can imagine that other people got frustrated when they found a note that said "Enjoy the Awesome Stew and Gurly Drink!" only to look around and realize that someone took the goodies but left the note behind to taunt all late-comers (look what I got and you didn't) or because they didn't want to pick up the "litter". :) So, I still leave stuff, but I leave fewer notes. I don't need to "take credit" for my impulsive gift-giving. If you really, really want credit--or to inspire others to give--join gifting groups like We Drop Stuff and share your favorite caches there, because, in all likelihood, only you and the person who picked up your dropped stuff will know you left it, and that presumes that you left a note AND that they read it. You may have to give without getting any credit; that is sometimes what being truly giving is like.

Occasionally I find other people's notes and other people's gift caches, which I usually leave alone and as is. I don't have a burning need for many material goods at this point, and someone else out there probably does. I don't need that Awesome Stew / Amber / Beer / Piggy Cubimal / bean / cherry. Someone else might. If I do take something that has obviously been cached (rather than abandoned in plain sight with no one around), I leave something of equivalent value or greater, because I can afford to do so and want to. Thing is, not everyone is going to play the way I do (or you do).

Give without strings attached. If someone takes, the reason(s) why is/are on them. Maybe they needed it, maybe they were greedy. You don't know for sure. So, let it go. Give just to give and you will continue to be happy giving. Give while trying to maintain any control over objects once you drop them and walk away, including fussing that your favourite hidey-holes have been found or notes taken, or hiding to ensure that only the "right" people take your things or that everyone "takes one and leaves one" (rather than going on about your day and playing the game), and you will sour on the idea of giving and experience less enjoyment.

People who see you as foolish for giving are, in a real way, cheating themselves out of the enjoyment that is giving without any expectations.

Give with the expectation that you can NOT enforce any rules that will apply towards how other people choose to play. Whether someone is griefing or innocently accepting the freebies is irrelevant once you drop stuff and walk away from it. It is not "stealing" to pick up freebies you have dropped. It may be greedy to take everything and leave nothing, but as far as dropping gifts is concerned, you have no control over the greed and anti-social gameplay behavior of others once you drop your gifts and walk off.

  • When I first started playing, I would find random stuff and I thought it was a game thing, especially when I saw some honey in the same spot, every time  I played. From my point of view, finding a random goody is awesome. I'll never forget on my third or so gaming session, I found about 8 emblems! I thought they were game generated, so I visited that spot once or twice a day to see if they had spawned again.

That last part brings me to the point I'd like to make. I never get how a player can call  dropping stuff in certain spots "a random drop." If its in the spot all the time, its not very random. Or, is it the prize that is random? Also, some players, old and new alike, may just start coming by daily just to see what other drops they can snag.

  • @Ralis: there are actually items like honey and drinks that are spawned by the game is some rare locations. Especially if you see the same item appearing again and again in the exact same spot, it is likely the game is doing this, and not a Glitch.

  • Another quick point: notes no longer decay over time, so the notes left behind, with no items around them, are essentially litter.  If, in the real world, you found a sign saying "These kittens are free to a good home!" but there were no kittens, or "Yard sale!" with a date which has passed, you'd probably toss those away, too.

  • Dropping stuff on the ground is littering, and picking up stuff left on the ground is cleaning up. There is a difference between cleaning and stealing.

Please a slob at home, and leave Ur a nice, clean place.

  • Glitch is a gathering game and I am a collector! 'Finding' stuff is my favorite! I will search and search and search.
    I'm not greedy...
I'm just a little Glitch, trying to make it rich!
