Maybe I'm just too weird, but am I the only one who doesn't find this funny? Maybe I'm just too annoyed from all the times people thought it was ~hilarious~ to draw penises over my notes or something.
Not likely - the minimum age here is 14, nowhere near the age of consent. That kind of material on a site with minors wouldn't end well for the company.
What the heck, that's rude. Why are you calling me out when I haven't done anything to you? Tell me, when was the other time I complained excessively? I thought this board was for voicing your opinion, not blindingly agreeing with everyone else.
And I would hope to go onto a non-adult game and not see penises. Wow.
This IS an adult game, and if you disagree I'll just point you towards the wood trees. Just because it doesn't have explicit mention to sex or swears doesn't make it suitable for kids.
I was just thinking the same thing. People who seem to think this is a kiddie game are fooling themselves and are in for a rude awakening from time to time. Sure teens can play, but the TOS is clear it is with an adult's oversight.
This dong thing is fairly mild as this kind of thing goes, and if that gets one's panties in a bunch, things will not get much better for those panties in future. :)
And as for the TOS portion about age restrictions: "If you are under 14 years of age, you are not authorized to use the Service, with or without registering. If you are between the ages of 14 and 17, you represent that your legal guardian has reviewed and agreed to these Terms"
Sounds like something you read in the TOS of an adult game. Ummm, ummm, ummm... Yep.
Ok I guess I was wrong about the ToS thing. But like most people, I never read the ToS and it was never stated anywhere as part of registration, so when I registered I was 17 years old. I'm 18 now though.
I think the sexual innuendo is ok and kind of funny and most importantly relatively subtle. It's something in your mind. But I was never expecting to see visualizations of penises in this game. I think it's gross and can be triggering to people who have been sexually abused, and I think casual acceptance of that is a part of rape culture. Woop de doo, I guess these things aren't important? I'm just waiting for the moment someone wants to call me out as a hypocrite for thinking that innuendo and depictions of penises are exactly the same thing.
I know that Glitch is not a kid's game, but I don't want to see people cybering in global or something like that. I guess that makes me weird too?
Anyway, casual acceptance of sexuality leads to normalization, not rape culture. For example, the availability of pornography strongly negatively correlates with sexual assaults in states with varying laws. Translation? More porn = less rape. Obviously this is not porn, but while I agree it doesn't belong in the game, I agree for completely different reasons and thoroughly object to the reasons you stated. I just think it doesn't work with the artistic ethos of the game - it's too "earthly" instead of "urthly".
Reirei - it is clearly stated in the Glitch Terms of Service that players must be at least 14 and if aged between 14-17 must have parental consent to play the game. Glitch is most definitely a game for adults.
Yes I did. I don't always, but anything my behavior will be strongly on display I do -- any online games, chat boards, etc. Ignorance of the law is not a legal excuse from following it IRL either.
But it's not in the game. And I'm not saying that it belongs there, or that I'd like it to be, I just thought it was a funny picture and I thought it was cute that the devs could leave little jokes in their blog posts for keen-eyed readers. And while I did kind of expect some sort of backlash I honestly feel that if you're getting so wound up about a harmless joke involving a picture of a cartoon penis (which is a perfectly normal part of the body, and in this depiction isn't even doing anything other than being there) then maybe you should stop hanging around people that are perpetuating this ridiculous fear that any phallic or sexual symbol will lead to normalisation of rape.
And I really don't hope that what I made out to be a silly thread gets locked over what is essentially getting worked up over nothing.
Alright, I admit that I made an accident when I signed up for my account, just like there are probably lots of 14-17 year olds here who probably also made that mistake.
Maybe it isn't important to you Avanas, but I know lots of people who've been deeply affected by the issues above and I've taken their cause to heart because I feel their experiences are very important. And I just first wanted to point out that I don't think cartoon penises are funny, but then someone had to call me out for stating my opinion.
But yes the age limit amongst other things is in the TOS, and this is an adult themed game, and for that matter most of the playerbase IS adults. So yes there will be some jokes from time to time, adult conversations and so forth. Plus things in game like dirty talking trees, and rod munching sloths, drinks and drugs, and TONS of innuendo. This "Hi" symbol wasn't put in the game anyway.....it would be different if thats what was being discussed, but its not.
In the glitchy spirit (or spirit of glitchness) can we agree that people react differently to things, and that's ok?
For myself - i thought it was quite amusing. I picture glitch being designed and tinkered with in a uber geeky tree top house workshop of cool, and this just confirms it.
Hahah - I noticed this in the blog too and thought it was funny.
I myself have "been deeply affected by the issues above" to put it nicely, and I say:
It's much better to laugh at a dong than to be afraid of it. =D
All in good adult humour.
I made a screenshot of the blog post last night and sent it to the fiance for a laugh (he's on Glitch, too), and he complained back with a screenshot saying there are no dongs in his version of the blog...I just, dunno, kinda thought it said zero cos only Kukubee could use it or something :P
Also we both found it hilarious, and I don't get all the fuss that's being made about it.
