Beta Subscription Wardrobe Drama

Ok... so there's *new clothes* --- hooray! I went to try them on. I'm not a subscriber (yet, but will be soon i hope!)...
I wasn't able to try on the Subscriber Only clothes. Now, for me, i know i adore Glitch and plan on subscribing anyway but sometimes trying on a cute outfit could maybe give someone a *push* to take the subscriber plunge! Why can't we at least try the stuff on.
And, the other thing that occured --- a window popped up saying basically "dood, get a subscription" so i clicked on it. Then it said (paraphrasing here) "dewd, subscriptions are FREE for beta testers!!" so i did a mental happy dance. Then i got an error message (previous subscriber). I click that and it says "Yay! You're now a subscriber" but it's all lies. I'm still not able to try on the SO clothes.
and there you have it.
Comments, feedback, explanation?

  • Beta subscriptions ended today (I believe)... and it sounds like they haven't updated all of the code.

  • Well to not even be able to try it on is not good business sence at all. Imagen going into a cloths shop and being expected to buy it with out trying it on...would you still buy it? NOPE!  Try before you buy makes Glitch subscription more appealing. If I can't try it on, I have no idea what i'm MISSING out on by not subscribing.
Posted 18 months ago by Misha Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Right Misha... that's how i was feeling... you can ALWAYS try on before you buy.
Posted 18 months ago by Niknik Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Maybe this is a bug. I think it's reasonable that both you and TS would want try-on available?
Posted 18 months ago by Lelu Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I would guess it is a bug, moving into the post-Beta Subscription era.
Posted 18 months ago by Lord Bacon-o Subscriber! | Permalink
  • There is a bug! And it's my fault too! (I neglected to get the new design in for lapsed subscriptions.) What should happen right now: you get told that you need to subscribe (rather than re-informed about the free tester subscription).

As for try-before-you-buy: everyone whose subscription has lapsed will have had a minimum of six weeks to not only try stuff, but wear it out of the store and get it all soiled! ;)

We can make it work any way that makes sense. But if we don't stop people whose subscriptions has lapsed from trying stuff they can't wear then the alternative would be:

    • Give a warning every time they try a subscriber-only option (so (a) they know what is going on and (b) there are not "gotchas" at checkout time), and

    • Stop them at the point of saving to say, for example, "You are wearing two things you already own, one that will cost 25 credits and one that is only for subscribers and you are not currently a subscriber. Would you like to change to those two things you already own and buy that other item for 25 credits and then put back the item that is subscriber-locked so you can save right now? Or would you like to buy a subscription and then come back here to finish up?"

And that seems worse to me ;)

But, we are always open to suggestions!

  • there's just about nothing worse than trying stuff on, finally getting everything just so and THEN being told it is subscriber only. . . BUT not being able to try something on at all, unless you are a subscriber, might be that very thing.

  • There's a 'recycle clothes' option, if you want to 'get rid of' unwanted clothes and shoes, but it seems to have disappeared on the subscriber-only clothes, all you get is a pop up explaining subscriptions, is this part of the bug?

If no, then: How do you recycle/get rid of the (subscriber only) clothes/shoes you cannot wear anymore, and want to delete?

  • Hey Stoot,

Agreed we Alpha/beta testers have had the chance to try on and wear the subscriber only items but new members won't have that privelege, trying something on is a natural prerequisite to buying things.

Would it be possible to have the wardrobe where you can try on everything available and a shop which will show only the items you can purchase?
    or
Perhaps have it so the shop knows what items you chose and displays those you can buy as normal and those needing a subscription greyed if you havent yet subscribed?
Posted 18 months ago by Faereluth Subscriber! | Permalink
  • A message saying, "You can try this on, but you can't keep it without buying a subscription!" would probably suffice.

Since we can buy credits without buying subscriptions, I hope to see more not-subscription-only items available in the future.

  • Ok, I have a different type of problem.

I know I haven't subscribed yet and so I lost my skin color and my eyes. :( But when I try to wear the clothes I bought that were subscriber only clothes (that I BOUGHT with my creidts) it won't let me wear them??? So are we not able to wear clothes we bought when we were subscribers?
Posted 18 months ago by Rilu Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Rilu, I just found that I have the same problem.  The shirt I'm currently wearing is something I bought when I was a subscriber.  If I'm not going to be able to keep it as a non-subscriber, I'd at least like my 25 credits back, or whatever it was that I paid.
Posted 18 months ago by glum pudding Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I didn't think there were clothes that both cost credit AND were subscriber only. Maybe I'm confused.
Posted 18 months ago by Lord Bacon-o Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Lord Bacon-O... some of the subscriber-only clothes cost a good amount of credits. I used all my credits and i'm sure some was for subscriber-only things.

And Stoot... yup, i have got to try on loads of subscriber-only clothes but you just released new ones today that i can't try on. Silly :P
I say that a blanket pop-up stating something like "You must be a subscriber to purchase Subscriber-only clothing... feel free to try some on, subscribe and shop til you drop!!"
Posted 18 months ago by Niknik Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Lord Bacon, there were clothes that were both cost credit and subscriber only... The skeleton bride wedding dress and light boned butterfly dress, just to name two.

And Glum, I was under the impression that we were able to keep them and wear the subscriber items that we purchased. I'm with you, if we can't I would think we should get the credit back for the items that we purchased.
Posted 18 months ago by Rilu Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Oh yes. The red badges. I was being silly.
Posted 18 months ago by Lord Bacon-o Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think Glum-Pudding had the right idea - 'you can try it on, but you can't keep it on unless you get a subscription' sounds like a clear enough option.
I tried a couple of things on before taking the plunge for the subscription. (That and I wanted to keep my lovely red hair)
Posted 18 months ago by Twoodle Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Maybe just a notice of some sort that says Subscriber items may be tried on but ONLY purchased with subscription. Or maybe try it on then if I go to buy it a notice that says "to take this item you need to subscribe"  option boxes ........subscribe now/not now.

I may have been able to test out and even ware clothes before now,  but what about new items your going to add?  Seriously i'm not spending a penny on something I cant try out.

Rilu I believe now your subscription has run out so has your option to keep the cloths. Free under subscription..well your no longer under one. Am I making sense :)
I belie subscriptions and credits were given out for us to TEST out and not to expect a refund of something we never really paid for :)
Posted 18 months ago by Misha Subscriber! | Permalink
  • We were told in another thread that we'd be able to keep whichever clothes we spent credits on, but that all of the subscriber-only free items were going to go away as soon as we no longer subscribed.

If I'd known that I couldn't keep subscriber-only items I'd spent credits on, I certainly wouldn't have spent the credits on them! :)

ETA: some people have purchased credits without buying subscriptions, and those people may also have purchased subscriber-only items during their free subscription periods, only to lose them now... so in that sense, they have spent real money on virtual items which have now been removed.  I'm hoping this is just part of the bug, because it would really suck if this were on purpose.
Posted 18 months ago by glum pudding Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Misha, I did pay for it. I bought some credits with a credit card. I spent $25 and got like 500  credits and used most of my credits on clothes. So if I can't keep the clothes I bought, then I think I should be able to get my credits back. This is just all so confusing....
Posted 18 months ago by Rilu Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Had people known though they might have not spent credits on Subscriber-only clothing if it was going to be lost if they didn't subscribe down the road. I checked and i think i had one item that was subscriber-only and not free but still. Boo.
Posted 18 months ago by Niknik Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Seems to me that the credits that come with the subscriptions should be considered as "paid for" credits - after all, they ARE part of what you are paying for. And so any clothes/items that were bought using credits should be kept, even if your subscription has lapsed.

Or are we just going to be "renting" the credits while paying for a subscription?

  • Rilu & glum pudding: this is a bug! i am working on fixing it as we speak

any clothes in your wardrobe should be able to be worn, regardless of current status. recycling should be allowed too. fix is in progress

refer to the FAQ for what is supposed to happen: http://beta.glitch.com/help/faq/#q19
Posted 18 months ago by Bees! Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think Misha was referring to the free subscriptions and credits testers had been given early on. But this brings up something for the future --- i subscribe for a year and buy all the new fancy, costly subscription-only clothing... then a year from now, maybe i'm playing but not ready to renew just yet... do i lose the clothes that, even though there were for subscribers, still cost credits that i paid cash for?
Perhaps charging for Subscriber-only clothes isn't the way to go?
Posted 18 months ago by Niknik Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Working on it! You can definitely keep items that were purchased with credits, regardless of subscription (as has been stated elsewhere many times). This bug will be fixed ASAP!

Posted 18 months ago by glum pudding Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Rilu  If you bought clothes with credits the yes I think you should be able to keep them and if that's not so then it may be a bug. If not then I would be asking for the items back or my money that's for sure.

edit to add I type much S l o w e r than Stoot and Bees do lol
Yes Niknik I was on about the credits were were given months ago for free :)

Oh.. edited to ask... what about "trying on"?

    Edits again to add...

  • Trying on: i'm not sure. we don't have a plan for that yet. sorry!
Posted 18 months ago by Bees! Subscriber! | Permalink

Got any ideas , toss 'em in the ring. I do understand that many people simply won't buy clothes if they can't try them on and think the idea of a single message stating you can't keep them  at check-out with a subscription option as has been mentioned above would be a good way to go.

ETA: @ stoot and bees - Dang that was quick :)

  • @Divine~ yeah, i saw that post but it wasn't really spot-on... especially
"As for try-before-you-buy: everyone whose subscription has lapsed will have had a minimum of six weeks to not only try stuff, but wear it out of the store and get it all soiled! ;)  "
I saw Stoot's post about the new stuff in the wardrobe and a good amount is subscriber-only so i've not gotten a chance to try it on.
I tossed my ideas in there. Seems a pop-up about "trying but not buying" would suffice. It could even go so far as the check-out screen and the SO items could be there but showing they won't be purchased this time due to being a non-subscriber.
I'm sure they'll figure out a way to make it happen. Sounds like it's down to WHEN a pop-up occurs and what it will say. An optional redirect to the subscription page at check-out might work well too.

  • Im sorry to keep banging on about this but if I cant try the blue top on with the green skirt then how do I know im gona like it enough to get a subscription. I really think your missing a trick here in selling your self. As subscribing has no real impact on game play you need to do everything you can to get us to subscribe. Trying on cloths is enticing us into wanting to buy them. You have spoken about possible apps in he future where you can change your avatar amongst other things. Well that app is also not going to sell if you cant play dress up :)
Posted 18 months ago by Misha Subscriber! | Permalink
  • That's exactly it Misha.... and in these trying times (game CLOSED) playing dress-up is really extra fun!

  • Misha/Niknik: we'll be doing it - we just haven't figured out exactly how it will work. Today is the first day it's been possible for someone to have expired :)

  • @ Bees THANK YOU I was going mad here thinking you had missed the point. I have been self employed for 25 years and have to sell my self all the time [ boy that sounds bad] I was looking at this from a business sense and not trying before you buy was in my option a nail in the coffin re selling subscriptions. :)
Posted 18 months ago by Misha Subscriber! | Permalink
  • First of all, Thanks Bees and Stoot for taking care of the subscription clothing problem. I can wear all my clothes that I bought now. Thank you for being so quick to help.

Second, sorry Niknik for stealing you thread by posting my problem here. xxx I didn't mean to do that to you.

I agree with Niknik and Misha, I am a visual person. I have to see it on. So being able to actually try clothes on, helps me to know if I really like it enough to purchase it. That is how it is for me in real life and so it is the same here on Glitch. I think you should be able to try all items on. But when you try to "add to cart" or when you check out, it should list that you must be a subscriber to purchase Subscriber-only clothing or to purchase this (these) item(s) you need to subscribe. And then have the subscribe now or not  option boxes.

Edit to add. Look like I type slower then Bees...lol. Thanks again for all your hard work Devs!! And for the quick responses!!!

  • @niknik - good idea on the Check-out simply saying next to the item that you can't buy it because ...

  • Aside from the effects of the bug... couldn't the 'preview' and try-on of a subscriber item trigger the 'this is a subscriber item, you can try it on but will need a subscription to purchase it' with the option to 'not show this window in the future' should patch up the repeating pop up for those who are irritated by it, and keep the reminder in front of those who like the warning. Adding the '2 of these items are subscriber items, would you like to purchase a subscription' to the confirm purchase should be the piece people need once the warning pop up has been suppressed.
