I'm a little ... stuck... aimless... listless.

How do you defeat the Giant on Level 5-B - oh wait, wrong type of game.

I'm not sure if it was the break (I started last session) or where my character is or a combo. But I'm not really sure what I should be doing to continue progressing to new things.

I started out pretty chef heavy, and had a good time learning various skills to help me harvest and then make food and drink type things. I then started to get into meditation skills before the end of the last session. In the week+ since I read that mining was good for money, so I've started looking into that.

But alchemy is pretty baffling, and seems like there are a few more skills I need before I can really start doing stuff with that. But that's the other thing, I'm low on money and whenever I get enough I'm low on space so I buy a new bag. The heap of new tools I'm going to need makes me feel like I've taken a wrong turn somewhere.

The quests I'm getting from the rock don't seem to be guiding me in a particular direction like they used to. So, I dunno.

Anyway, that's my story. This doesn't have to be about helping me (I know the info is out there on wiki's and such, but I'm not really into diving that deep outside of the game space to find my way right now - maybe post beta I'll feel different). I mostly want to lay that out for the devs.

I think I'd rather hear about other people's experiences and progression paths, and if they've felt this way, how they got past it. If you never felt this way, what kept you moving from new thing to new thing, or what fantastic discoveries propelled you to the next cool thing?

  • re. helping you, mining for money - you don't need alchemy to make money mining, that's useful for other stuff like favour/xp but if you are continuously low on funds you just need to learn the better mining skills, mine, sell raw chunks, buy food for fuel, mine, sell raw chunks etc. you don't need to do this continually. with mining 4 you can, conservatively, make 1k currants every 3 to 5 minutes. you don't need a heap of new tools, mostly just a fancy pick.

once you have money, it becomes a lot easier to explore other aspects of the game without worrying about making ends meet and keeping yourself out of hell. you don't even need a lot of money. normally i carry around 10k or less these days. that's lots.

re. the next cool thing .. eventually you will run out of next cool things. in the meantime, after you've figured out a trick for keeping your energy and cash supplies up, you might want to check out the new streets group and try collaborating on some projects.

if you don't have a house yet, and it appears you don't, you might want to get one. you'll get to try gardening that way. maybe you'll like that.

i'm also enjoying the race ticket dispensers lately.

my typical progression path after a reset is to get mining, buy a house, work on projects, get bored, engage in shenanigans. then there's a cycle of boredom and shenanigans.

Well, I'll be starting off the same way, lol, but before I get to projects I think I'll just focus on skill-learning in general. A lot of projects require lots of skill. That and I also want to mine enough to get about 13 big bags, a tool box, a spice rack, and an elemental pouch. THEN I can really do stuff, lol.

  • @zeebo..  (And to imagine that i am getting a little worried about this at L25..)  Just really beginning to explore cooking, which I put off (too much rl, LOL).. Then there's fireflys, barnacles and crystalmizering.  Running to every street possible to gain xp, and now I'm collecting & saving stuff to help with street projects.. so much to do.. so little time (as least while we're still in beta..:)  Mostly, I just set a goal (or two) and go for it to try to enhance my learning and game experience.

  • In the beginning I didn't really want to strategize much, or figure out which systems for doing things were the most efficient. Then eventually, I started farming a lot, had a cute biggish house in Groddle Meadow, got a little bored with farming....
I'm more into mining now. I like the illusion of having lots of cash! It's immature, I know. I moved into a fire bog area, and like my firefly swarm in my basement. Those big modern Alakol houses don't appeal to me as places to live.... They are handsome, though. I guess it's a cycle of learning how to progress up a skill tree, and then learning another one. I'm trying to be more social in the game.... I want to help building streets, I've never been to an end of the world party. I don't mind the new sets of tools that come with new skill trees, but I am a little frustrated with constantly reorganizing my bag. I know that there's an outside website with a "Where's my stuff?"app of some kind. I'm going to look for that again.
I'm grateful to the devs for the game, will they be able to continually develop new features? If they don't, I'll get bored. By the way, I can play this game 20 hours straight, no problem. More quests for experienced players would be good.

  • Oh, and I meant to say, in the beginning I used to donate to shrines a lot and was always broke, as a way of learning skills faster. But I didn't like the stress of always running out of currants.

  • I can't speak at length because I'm still new, but what I do each night is I sell everything except my bags. The next time I play, I 'start over' but with more bag space.

It's kept me going in a different direction each time. Keeping it fresh. It's nice to have a large bankroll to play with each 'next' time.

  • Wow... That's an interesting system. Kind of Zen-nothing-in-life-is permanent.... Hmmm...

  • I've played enough MMO's to have figured out what was 'best for money' in my first day of play, so with this being beta, I decided to experiment.  I went exclusively by skill time length. I took every possible skill tree at low level, taking more new skills as they became available if they had short timers.
I realize it's not practical; a hundred utensils and ingredients to buy and not much money for the bags. But it's very much fun! I got a house early by simply mining when I needed currants and the most varied of quests took me all over Ur.
I then started helping in projects, finding that Mr. Dawgg's 'start over' system is pretty easy to follow if you do them a lot :)
I'd like to think I'll keep up the casual method when the game goes live, but I think I'll probably go the 'mining early for currants' method too, because it's less stressful.

  • Whoa, Mr Dawgg! That strategy blows me away. Mostly because it seems to fit the vibe of the game so well.  I'm such a pack-rat, maybe that would be good for me to try out! (And until there's the last wipe, there's really no risk to anything long term)

I haven't gotten a house, I was kind of waiting for a quest to take me through that path. But I do long to get into gardening and animal raising.

Same with projects. I understand the principle of nurturing (I always pet and water before harvesting), but haven't dug into how to make a street thrive.

  • Agreed, Zeebo.  +1 on that Dawgg. (do you mind if I call you Dawgg?)

  • @Zeebo: I don't think there is a quest for getting a house, so you may just want to do it...
