Food Energy Efficiency Chart

I noticed that the Glitch Wiki had a page on food item energy efficiency that was sadly incomplete/outdated. Rather than wait for it to become more useful, I decided to try and build a spreadsheet with all the food items in the game, including information on their ingredients and energy costs.

The Google Doc with the chart is here. I've set it so anyone with that link can edit the file so please, be kind. :)

There's a couple things I was hoping you folks could help me fill in...

1) First off, I don't have half of these recipes, so if you DO, please check their listings for accuracy! Once you've checked an item's row and found it to be complete and accurate, please highlight the item name light orange, like I did with Juicy Carpaccio.

2) I don't know what skill levels unlock certain items. These are listed in mauve. If YOU know, please update that field and remove its coloration.

3) Finally, I'm missing some data on "Tuning" costs. Basically, that would entail checking an item's recipe, and then inputting the energy cost of turning the basic ingredients, like Cherries, into the ingredients that the item uses, like Lemons or Oranges. In a perfect world, I'd build a larger spreadsheet that would allow us to track energy costs and recipes a bit more specifically, but I think this sucker suits our purposes without being TOO daunting. :)

Some additional info on fields that may be confusing...

Harvesting is the estimate of how much energy it would take to snag the basic ingredients from trees, piggies, et cetera. This cost is set on the Energy tab of the spreadsheet.
Tuning is how much energy it costs to turn basic ingredients into the specific ones the recipe calls for.
Cooking is how much energy it costs to cook one of that dish in the first place.
Milk is how much energy it costs to turn Milk into however many Butter or Cheese the recipe requires.

I hope all this is interesting or useful to you guys. Thanks in advance to anyone who helps out!

  • Skills have a big influence on energy cost for harvesting and, if I'm not mistaken, cooking too. Check out the spreadsheet I made and feel free to copy. I think they changes some recipes though.

I have limited internet access right now, but you'll find the link on my wiki profile page, which is linked on my Glitch profile.

ETA: I will check out your spreadsheet later! :)

  • Yup, the skills certainly do have an influence. I think piggy nibbling is something like 5 energy energy to start with, you can do it once, and get 1 meat. At AK6 for me it is now 2 energy to nibble, I don't have to pet, can nibble twice and get 3 meat per nibble. Similar for tree harvesting, costs 2 energy, can do it twice, and get 12 cherries/bubbles/whatever per harvest.

And skill levels aren't the only things that unlock recipes. You can unlock some by earning an achievement for that thing. Like I think the blender one was 25 times? It gave me an achievement and a new recipe, when I get blending 2 there will be recipes with that, but also probably another achievement with an additional recipe (I wish bubbles, fruit changing and gas making worked the same way so we had more recipes for them).

  • Thank you so, so, so, so, so, so, so very much for creating this! Yes, skills do effect recipe creation but MAN is this helpful! I knew those ribs weren't as efficient as my salmon planks!

  • So the higher the ratio number the better?

  • The higher the ratio number, the more efficient.  Whether that's the most important attribute depends on what you're looking to get.

The Super Veggie Kebab, for example, is pretty remarkably efficient... but you're buying most of the ingredients to get that level of efficiency (and growing the ingredients is time-consuming), and it only stacks to 12 for a maximum energy per stack of 696 energy.  For comparison, the Hearty Groddile Sandwich is nowhere near as energy-efficient to make, but every ingredient can be easily harvested in the wild, and it stacks to 1,116 energy per at the same 12 per stack.

If you need to get your Glitch from Pooped to running wild fast, the Veggie Kebab looks better, but if you're cooking up a bag full of food to tide your Glitch over for a long mining and grinding run, less efficient but more stackable items are more valuable.

  • Now, I am definitely no number cruncher, all this makes my head spin. I usually just go with what people tell me is good.

I waddled my way up to the tippy top of the cooking tree and finally unlocked awesome stew today, yay! I find it fun to cook and gather and gather and cook. And in my crafting if I get low on energy I can just eat some of my profit.

Which brings me to the confused help me part. I see an energy ratio, very well and good, thank you so much for crunching those numbers. What about a cost to profit ratio? Granted that has as many factors as the energy ratio, so yeah, my head swims trying to find the balance between what is efficient energy wise for me to use and still lets me not go broke.

  • Profit is harder to calculate as there are many variables such as how you acquire the basics and if there is demand on the auction.
I wouldn't mind seeing a minimum cost that assumes you collect everything manually. If you're interested in max profit you should be doing so.

  • Wow, you must have put a lot of work into it. Good job n_n

  • Did someone delete all the 'Cooking' values or are they just missing?

  • They still need to be filled in.

  • Thank you so much for this!

It really helps for looking at different foods on the auction and determining which has the better currants-per-energy ratio.

  • Ack! Sorry, guys: I just had to revert a bunch of changes to the sheet. :(

Looks like someone partially sorted the sheet yesterday, tossing a bunch of the calculations outta whack. Should be fixed now, I think, but if anyone made any adjustments in the last day or so, they're probably gone. :(((

There's probably a better long term solution to that once the chart is completely filled in... Maybe a second, read-only chart that has multiple tabs sorted by what you might be most interested in, like "highest energy ratio" and "cheapest" and "by skill requirement".

At work right now, alas, otherwise I'd respond to a couple of the other questions. I'll get to those later on, but in the meantime, I'm glad some of you found this useful! :D

  • :D I am headed out for coffee, but when I come back I will begin checking the formulas for the recipes I have. This is awesome!

  • Awesome chart. I bookmarked it, thanks.

  • Did... did it break? Not even half of the stuff is on there now and some of it is pink some blue. :(
