Ballots & Voting

We just opened the first ballot ("Which Two Animals Should Get Added to Glitch Next?") So, subscribers: you can finally spend one of those votes that have been storing up (or two of them … or thirty).

We anticipate holding these kind of referendums about once a month, but that's subject to change as we see what happens.

  • Some ideas to consider:

If the ballot is flawed, return all votes and post a corrected ballot.  Don't "fix" it after people have already spent their votes.

Seriously consider (again) not displaying results until the voting has ended.

If you are going to display the results before the voting ends,  let people change their votes at any time until the voting has ended.  This is especially important if you don't follow the procedure of returning votes before you post a corrected ballot.
Posted 9 months ago by WindBorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I second the ideas WindBorn has put forward above.

Even when it's all in good fun, when it comes to voting, there's much to be said for following best practices.
Posted 9 months ago by Splendora Subscriber! | Permalink
  • But wasn't the 'correction' in the ballot that the sloths were not included on the list at first?  And then they went on to win.
Posted 9 months ago by Rannel Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I don't think the votes should be transferable in any way, but perhaps the visibility of the results should be reconsidered, yes.
Posted 9 months ago by Carl Projectorinski Subscriber! | Permalink
  • yeah, the mistake has been corrected by beautiful citizens of glitch!
Posted 9 months ago by Electric Wizard Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Even though I enjoy seeing it, and can see in the future how I could use it to my advantage to pick and choose where my votes will be the most useful, I do not think we should be able to see the results before the voting is completely over with. When I first cast my votes, I didn't know I would be able to see the results. After seeing them, I would have cast my votes differently so as not to waste them on losers (which is not fair for the underdogs, and guarantees that they will lose). It introduces a pretty strong bias.
Posted 9 months ago by Shepherdmoon Subscriber! | Permalink
  • A particularly strong bias if you have a number of votes, and you vote once so that you can see the results and then vote some more later to influence the outcome.  Also, I got really sick of the campaigning.  It got people's emotions a little too riled up, I think.

If no one had any idea of what the results were, there might still be a lot of campaigning, but it would be a little less strident I think, and considerably less bound up in tangible numbers.  A fully blind system would emphasize that this is an election, not a race.
Posted 9 months ago by Carl Projectorinski Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Thanks for all the input. We'll definitely think about whether the results should be visible in advance (I can see both sides on that). It makes a difference what kind of ballot it is (e.g., if it is "A or B?" instead of "most popular 2 out of 12").

I'm also intrigued by Windborn's idea of letting people change votes until the end … that could be really interesting.

  • I think this actually went pretty well for a first run.  Animals were a good choice for it, despite some of the hurt feelings.
Posted 9 months ago by Carl Projectorinski Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Stoot - this was fun, and fun is good.
Posted 9 months ago by Sue Chef Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I actually thought the campaigning was great fun  because it was so silly to ascribe character traits to imaginary animals.  I am sorry sloth was added late - it would have changed my votes.  But one of my two favorites made it in and that is good.
Posted 9 months ago by Kookaburra Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Aw, rats!

I cast one vote for alpaca (only because I like the name alpaca), one vote for sloth (because they have the cutest faces and the creepiest rest-of-bodies), and one vote for rat (because rats deserve love too!)!

I have to admit, I'm sort of sad that the rat didn't pull at least into the center of the pack. They're hella smart and may have given us nuclear power or something. That said, I would have been pleased with the results no matter what they were. :) Unless kangaroos won. I don't trust 'em. Shifty eyes and they can't back up.

  • Well.. alpacas are almost as cool as goats, so.. that's fine.  :>

I'm glad that the two that won were 2 I voted for.  :)
I agree it was great fun watching this unfold!  :D

  • i'm thankful and admire our ecossistem, including subtleties, but i had (not really had, had, but had) to cast my vote. i have no idea how our Giants will create the winners, but watching at all this videos, yeah, many ideas!
campaigns are fine, but spent more of my time watching funny videos and then theres a cute one on the video list and then my glitch ends up in hell, cause i got distracted more often... the videos are great, thank you very much for sharing them :)
and my preference was casted on sloths (1 vote). and i'm curious about why are we able to cast more than one vote in each. also saw the results and because there wasn't a koala, maybe, i delayed my second cast. why would i cast a second time!? oh yes, the button said "cast your voteS", if i well remember :)
so then i casted my second preference on alpacas (1 vote). but then, when the ballot was expiring and alpacas were losing for foxes (congrats:)) i afirmativelly casted alpacas again (1 vote). so i spent one vote in my first preference and the second preference, that i could or not cast for, got me two votes.
should i had spent all my votes for the alpacas to win? i could, but i didn't (sorry)... but i was watching those cute videos and wasn't paying attention to the results page and i was more for the single vote. fells weired... and if we are going to have more ballots, i thought (before i casted any vote) maybe i should save them and take this first experience as it is: the first:)
foxes will also be funny and wild and awesome!:)
