Housing Idea for choice of Herb or Vegetable Patches Regarless of Location

I know housing is undergoing a major overhaul and am as excited as anyone to see the results.

Since it seems we are to have more control over housing options, I hope this includes the ability to decide what type of patches our houses contain, Herb, Veggie or Dark.

I'd like to see the option to choose which type of patches our house contains regardless of location. But it wouldn't be a "click this option switch" type decision.

If, for example a player's house is located in Groddle Forest (traditionally a vegetable growing region) and wishes to dabble in the Herb Trade without moving to the Swamps, that player will need to collect dirt and loam from the bog lands. Likewise, if a player loves the look of the bog houses but wants to grow Vegetables they can head to one of the Veggie growing areas and harvest dirt and loam to build their veggie producing Raised Beds in their Swamp home.

And perhaps we could even mix and match. I want 6 veggie patches and 10 herb patches and 2 dark patches? Fine! If I do the work and get the appropriate soil, why not? And If people want a house with no patches they can have that too.

And because housing is customizable, players need not move when later they decide that they are sick of whatever it is they have been growing. It is simple enough (with some effort, or a quick trip to the auction house) to head out again, get the soil you need and get growing.

This idea may be too late for the first version of housing upgrades, or something similar may already be in the works, but I would love to see this ability to live where I want and grow what I want when I want it come true.

Ideas about this? Downsides to this?

  • I was just saying something similar in this thread:
"I'm imagining something else, too - I've said elsewhere that the art in The Lost Floor makes me think this may be an upcoming solution to the herb/crop conundrum (herb beds inside a room with windows.)  We could have an Irrigated Herb Plot installation in an upper storey room if we live in Grumbala or Groddle Island, which would provide the dimmer light and the wetter soil that the herbs prefer.  (Maybe we'd need to charge it using emblems of Mab and fuel cells for the water pump; maybe we'd need to fill the pump reservoir using our watering cans I DON'T KNOW.)  And alternatively, if we live on the Mazza'la continent, we could have an upper storey room with Gro-lites and loam-rich soil for growing crops in, that you'd need Mab emblems and fuel cells to run the lights.  It also seems reasonable that these set-ups would be expensive to install and expensive to run, and would only grow crops/herbs at (for example) 80% of their normal growth rate, so it would take longer to grow."

I think it would be good if, as you suggest, you have to gather peat from the bogs common in Mazza'la for the herb plots, and earth and loam common in Groddle and Grumbala for the crop plots.

Also keep in mind that we will not likely be tied in real estate to a single location; but given the herb/crop dichotomy I wonder if we still might be tied to a particular continent, or something like that.

  • oh yeah I thought about that reduced productivity part too but greedily decided against including it. I'm on the fence about whether expending the time/energy to gather the soil/build the plots should take care of the reduced productivity or not. Perhaps an initial addition of X amount of guano to the soil could take care of that.

And like you say the actual "locationess" of housing is a bit fuzzy atm so this may not matter at all.

  • I feel that if I pay 50,000 currents for a house I should be able to build herb gardens under the lower deck, or replace the small garden with herb garden.

Or, if that's too hard, the developers could make it possible to own two houses so we can the gardens that we want so we can avoid using public gardens if we don't like sharing plants that we have fertilized.

  • Looks like we're getting to just make both kinds of gardens.

Q: Will crop gardens and herb gardens be able to co-exist in the same house?
Stoot: You will be able to build more than one type of garden on your property (they don't come with any; you can "imagine" more land and then build many, many gardens).
