Limit on Number of New Skills Learned?

Is there a limit to the number of skills a character can learn? I just noticed the "Unlearn" skill.

  • No. You can learn everything. But as you learn more skills, it adds time to each new skill you learn. Eventually, that means some skills take weeks. When more skills get added, it will extend into months. SO you can unlearn skills you don't use so that you can learn new skills quicker. (Note: you can't unlearn skills that are prerequisites for a skill you are keeping.)

  • Learning skills unrelated to other skills still increases the time needed to learn those unrelated skills??  That's odd.  I figured the time only increased as the difficulty (or "level) of the skill increased - ie Lvl 2 cooking takes longer than lvl 1.

I have skills in my tree right now that range from 20 minutes to 4 hours.

  • Depending on your BL skill level, you can learn a certain number of skills at the base learning rate (xBL modifier).  After that, there's a 3% compounding increase in the time it takes to learn a skill for every skill you learn above your threshold learning level.  Basically the equation looks like this:

Time to learn = (Base learning time x BL modifier) x [1.03^ (Total # of skills learned - Skill threshold)]

    Skill threshold is as follows:
    No BL - 20 skills
    BL1 - 21
    BL2 - 24
    BL3 - 28
    BL4 - 32
    BL5 - 37

  • The wiki discusses it in some detail. LINK.
(Keep in mind, these things are tweaked all the time so the wiki may not be 100% up to date.)

  • But Better Learning contributes to skills learned and thus increases learn time while decreasing it? Seems silly to me. Also I don't see how the new Unlearning skill would ever be useful, it's just a whole tree you will end up unlearning to lower the threshold and learn actual useful skills faster, right?

  • strcat, re "But Better Learning contributes to skills learned and thus increases learn time while decreasing it? Seems silly to me."

That would indeed be silly. But, rather than count as new skills for the purpose of determining learning time, the BL skills all increase the number of skills you can learn before the extra time comes into play.

  • The philosophical problem I have with that system is that it results in people deciding that some skills are "more useful" than others, and very few people learn the "less useful" skills because they slow down future learning. Players have the unfortunate tendency to optimize the fun out of games, and this system very much encourages it.

I really don't want Glitch to have "best" and "flavor of the month" skill builds.

  • Tobold, I think that's a valid concern and something we'll be watching out for. But, if we can continually be adding more skills (and I think we can) it can also make for an interesting set of strategic choices — "which of the skills that I have now, if any, am I willing to ditch to learn the new ones?" In the ideal case, there is no single, optimal path. But, we'll see. And if it's broken, we'll fix it ;)

  • What is broken right now is I get message I just finished Tinkering IV, I have started this skill but completed a different skill while the game was open/closed.  So there is no way I could have restarted let alone finished Tinkering IV.  Plus on my skills it still shows that I haven't finished Tink 4.  I wonder how many people this bitty bug has bit ?

  • At the moment, yes. I have learned all available skills (and I know I'm not the only one). So, until new skills are added to the skill tree, there is a finite number of skills you could conceivably learn.

  • I'd like to be a Jack of All trades, I wouldn't like to be forced to undo skills to redo others, its more fun to have all skills under your belt after lots of playing.

  • I know I'm probably in the minority, but I find optimizing characters to be a lot of fun :)

  • Linnaea, I'm with you. If we DIDN'T have to make choices, we might as well start the game with every skill.

  • My problem is that I don't want to ditch any skill unless I can ditch Skill I without affecting Skill II.  that seems unlikely because Skill II is dependant on knowing Skill I.  I really don't want to specialize because I like doing everything.  If I have to sacrifice Gardening (for example) and become a Miner then I am limited and more easily bored.  I would also be dependant on eating only basic foods that I could find or harvest from a Community garden (a little unfair to those who planted) or I would be forced to purchase foods from vendors or Auctions.  None of that is appealing to me.

OTOH, I am assuming that new Skills will be added.  It already takes two weeks more or less for me to learn the few skills I have left.  As new skills are added, it may indeed take a month or more to learn new things.  I can see the Fun Factor diminishing to the point where I won't want to play often because I am too poor or too hungry or am spending part of every game day in Hell and the rest of the day trying to scrounge up drinks and food to stay alive.  Note that I have never had any real recovery from Hell until the new day dawns.

This brings to mind Brewing.  How about letting me bottle the juice from Hell grapes and ferment them to make home made Hell Wine?  I believe this has been discussed before.  This could be expanded and include new skills such as Wine Making and new achievements such as Amateur Moonshiner, Moonshiner, Professional Moonshiner, Moonshiner Extrodinaire, Brewmeister, etc.  Sorry, I digress.
