Thoughts on Glitch's mythology and firsts steps of the "Church of Ti"

Hi people!
My name is Barneto and i haven`t participated much in the forums yet, but during this last test i had some thoughts related to religions and mythology inside the world of Glitch.

As far as i know, we are all characters living in a world imagined by 11 mighty giants.
And for the moment, we can focus our game-life in a lot of jobs such as miner, chef, farmer... but nothing like a cleric or religion man.
What i am trying to say is that Glitch's world depends largely on 11 different entities with different interests and areas of influence, so i would find extremely logical the imminent development of different religions dedicated to serve and worship the different Giants, the same way as it happened in the ancient Greece with their gods.

In this early alpha stage, our religious behaviour is limited to donate to their shrines, and in some cases we dont even care about the recipient of our donation. I am sure the devs are already working on it, but i think that it could be very interesting if each player could affiliate or link himself to a concrete Giant, as his disciple, believer, prophet, cleric or whatever.
That situation, in game-terms would bring us a lot of team work, as all the followers of certain Giant could work together and against other cults, striving for several goals like the "most favored Giant" ranking, for example.

So, regardless of what devs decide on this mithology subject, i have decided to start my own project, and i would love if some of you want to join me in the just founded "Church of Ti".

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was Bruise 52nd, i had been thinking a lot on becoming a cleric, but still didn`t know much about our Giants.
I was in Groodle Meadow asking myself questions about our existance when suddenly a miracle happened!!!
The Mighty Giant Ti appeared just in front of me and enlightnened me with its charming pressence.
During the brief incarnation, my questions were solved, and i knew i had been chosen to be one of the prophets of Ti, so from that moment on i will dedicate my Glitchian life to serve and follow the Giant Ti, master of knowledge and odds.
So i have already started to donate to Ti, and have managed to get it to the second place in the "most favored Giant" ranking

Ti is the master of odds and knowledge, and it has control over alchemy, refining and bureaucratic skills. It is neither male or female, or both male and female, and also influences other skills like tinkering, better learning, blending etc...

Please feel free to join us in this project if u worship Ti more than any other Giant.
There arent any requisites to join this project besides loving Ti and signing in this forum topic.
For the moment, the main objective is to get Ti to the first place in the ranking, but if you people make this grow, we will have other activities and aims in the future.
Also, Ti informed me that once a "Cleric of Ti" reaches the 5% of total favor donated to Ti he or she can consider himself/herself a legitimate "Prophet of Ti"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PD: Feel free to post whatever you (players and devs) think about this kind of initiatives.
PD2: Its just a kind of "game" inside Glitch, to achieve the same aim as guilds or clans do in other games.
PD3: Sorry about the grammatical mistakes, English isnt my mother tongue, but i hope the message can be understood.

  • I like the idea.
But isn't it what bureaucratic arts are about in the end? I haven't read everything said about the subject in the forum, but that's what I understood.

  • Very original idea. There's not much lore pertaining to the giants at this moment, but the devs did say that religion would be incorporated at a later point. While some of the things you said aren't really practical (5% of total favour will be extremely difficult in beta and impossible once the game comes out), I like the overall idea.

I'd like to go more in depth into the "cleric" thing though. I'm a strong believer of classes in games, and don't see the point of having multiple characters unless they're present. Even in a non combat game, different classes (such as clerics who may be able to get favour bonuses or maybe even start a church of the giant).

And sorry man, but Spriggan beats Ti any day in my books :)

  • As the founder of a failed church, I can see where you are coming from, but I don't think it's destined to work so great. It seems like such a natural thing, you know? But I don't think it's panning out that way in Glitch.

I don't think you can start a church based on a single testimony to a giant (that is what I did, and it didn't work for me). People will just react like Aldaris, i.e., "Sorry man but Spriggan/Pot/Humbaba beats Ti any day..." . Plus a church whose oblations are all based on exercising game mechanics...well, it's a bit shallow, don't you think? Just for starters, like you said, but that's not really what keeps people coming to church services. People like to first become part of a group emotionally and then only after that are they are willing to do dreary stuff like mine a thousand luminous moonstones to fatten the church coffers.

All the best churches are based on a group of people's experiences with a really cool amazing person, who then goes away and in whose absence those exploits get exaggerated even more by that same group of persons, and they all agree that person was totally the embodiment of the ultimate spirit, and then they start telling others and their testament is very compelling, etc.

So I think you need a mighty prophet-magician-Fonzie, or someone who looks a lot like he could be the son of Ti, and after that, I bet your church could really get busy. The real task would be how to create prophet-magician-Fonzie's in Glitch...would they be really charismatic players? Would the devs create an NPC with a specific narrative purpose (to be admired, followed and elevated by real players)?

  • Thanks for reading the topic and answering with your opinion, i really apreciate it =)

@Aldaris: The 5% thing is just a kind of individual trophy, something like a house-made achievent that makes a good goal to get in this little group.
It was thought as a way of giving the appropiate "title" to the most dedicated members of the group. In fact, in this last test i reached that 5% myself before posting at this forum =)
However, its just a minor incentive, as i cant offer pretty much than my in-game help to the people who want to work with me in this moto.

@Nanookie: Well, the fact is that i'm not planning on founding a religion like real life religions, with resurrections, miracles, and thousands or millions or followers that could even kill for me or for Ti...
The idea of this post is just to give people another goal in this game, one more dimension that they can explore if they want, just as becoming a chef or planting trees.

I will anyways continue working on my goal of making Ti the most favoured Giant of the rankings as a first project, and if anybody wants to help me with that, we will work together and become part of that emotional group u mentioned =)
Then, maybe we find other projects and objectives to achieve.

Of course, devs can create religions in this game, but as it is a social game, i just wanted to contribute in my own way proposing this little project to the users that want to participate.
Think about this project as a guild or clan, better than as a "real life religion".

Also, if this topic encourages people to work and fight for other Giant instead of Ti, i will also be happy.
I think that this little in-game war among the Giants can be very funny and interesting, and maybe in little time we are all playing this game under our own "faction", trying to get it to the top.
So if any of you want to play for the Humbaba's team or Spriggan one, go for it, and we will have a nice game :P
My team/guild/religion/cult/church/whatever will be the one sponsored by Ti, and i will be very happy if i get more teammates ^^

  • Berneto, when you say "5% of total favour donated", does that mean 5% of the total needed to receive an emblem? Or 5% total for the glitch world? Because the latter was the one I assumed you meant.

I really admire you for doing this. Having a unique goal in a game is an awesome thing, especially if you can influence others to do it. It'll be interesting to see whether or not the devs can use your suggestion in any way.

  • Aldaris, i meant a 5% of the total favor point spent ever to Ti, that is the amount i could make in this last test.
Right now, Ti has 372,562 points, and i have done 21,290 of them according to the rankings, what is more or less like a 5.7%

But anyways, that isnt the important thing, if u or any other player want to help at this movement, i wont ask u any amount or rate, just tell me and help as much as u want or can, and i will consider you a teammate in this task, and a legitimate member of the Church of Ti.
    =D

    Diary of Slokda,
    2nd of Fever.

It has been four days now since the Magic Rock has given me the assignement to get it 'the zone'. Even though I have been trying to meditate almost constantly, I never got a real relaxed fealing. The skill I learned with so much joy is failling me on every point so far. I don't know what to do anymore, I guess I'll take a brake from it for some time.

    5th of Fever

I stumbled upon Groddle hights, and almost instantly I noticed how much quieter it is here. I like that quitness, so I decided to climb up the mountains a little more. While walking up that seemingly endless hill, I felt something strange. I felt a connection between me and 'something'. I can't really discribe what, though.

    6th of Fever
I came to what I think is the highest point of the known glitch world; Yeoman's bluff. The connection I felt becomes heavyer with ever step I take to the top. When I finally reached that top, I tried meditating once more. Almost instantly I became sucked up in a vision, dream.
I was at a white, cloudy place. though there was nothing to refer to I know, I felt ever more relaxed. That was when I heard The Voice. The Voice of life, thoughts, dreams, everything. The Voice of Cosma. While it lasted only a few seconds, it felt like an eternety. It was a warm, soft voice. The only thing it said was 'Welcome', but that was enough for me. I knew I would do everything to heard just that single word again, and that's what I did. I left the labour of the mines and lecture of penpersonship behind me, to get in that zone once again. But I wanted even more, I wanted to share that knowledge, that feeling. So in professionalized in radiating, to share those otherworldly bonds. Ans so I was the first of "The Followers Of Cosma".
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

edit: I've been thinking about religion in this game quite some time, and since you started it up, I can't stay behind. :)

  • Haha, im happy to see that little by little, the Giants in Glitch are showing themselves up.
In this time, it is Cosma, the Giant of meditation and sky.

My best wishes on that project Slokda, and if u need anything from me u can tell me, as Cosma is a friendly Giant to me and to Ti (both share influence on the better learning skills)
I hope they both can get to the top of the charts (the only place where we can compete for the moment) soon, but with Ti at the 1st place =P

It seems that by now we already have 2 active cults worshiping 2 of our 11 Giants.
    Not bad at all! =D

  • I can't speak for a religion so much, but as for a definite leaning...

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The heat was fierce in my tiny wooden hut, making the whole atmosphere into a sauna. The tree-house was filled with the sounds of bubbling and boiling, whistling and hissing as minor miracles took place with the help of practical alchemy.

"A pinch more salt, dear," my saucepan burbled.
"Five more minutes!" the noodles in my frying pan snapped.
"Mmmhrm! Flip the grilled cheese, it's starting to stick!" my Mike Tyson Grill groaned, but best of all, chortling away with gigantic gusto-

    "All done!"
    --------
As I doled out another bowl of Hearty Chili to a frozen denizen of Wintry Place, I couldn't help but thank my Awesome Pot.

    "You're welcome, little Glitch."

  • Cool!
We already have 3 Glitchy citizens affiliated to a Giant:

    Ti - Barneto
    Cosma - Slokda
    Pot - Elbee

If you want, and more people join this initiative, i will start and keep updated a new informative topic with the current situation of all the cults/teams/affiliations.
Then, we will just need the devs to give us some goals to achieve as a group =P

  • The world seems peaceful as it is, I see no need to upset things by bringing in religion. It's too much work for the developers, without religion you dont need war, hate, poverty etc; I vote for the status quo.

  • funny how people link a religion with war, hate, etc.
while you could just see it as a way to express yourself. The chance there will be any real fanatics around i quite small, even though I say it myselves.

  • I think that we all have to consider the differences between a religion in real life and a religion inside a social game like this one.

Religions in real life are something serious. Either u believe in them or not, they are huge social phenomenons that modify the behaviour of millions of people and can cause very serious problems like wars, discrimination...

Religion inside a game is just a funny social tool, a merely excuse to interact and form groups with something in common. It doesnt mean i am going to pray for Ti every night in my real life, or discriminate people who doesnt accept my religion...

Perhaps i am not the exact target for this game, but i really love the teamwork that u can find in other games (mmorpgs p.e.) thanks to guilds/clans systems.
As this is meant to be a social game, i feel that a social, pacific and irreverent struggle among several factions can be very interesting for this game.
Thats why i wanted to found a group (could have been a Sports Club, an ingenuous political party, a religion...) inside Glitch, and it is even funnier if we have other groups to compete against =)

So please, dont take this topic as a flame war between religious people and not religious people, that is not the point.
Take this "religions" as serious as the 'People's Front of Judea' vs. the 'Judean People's Front' in the film "Life of Bryan".

  • Click the "Groups" link at the top of the page, then "Start a New Group" at the top right, fill out the required information, and voila! your own church group. You could copy pertinent bits of this thread into it as a first post.

  • As I stated, not a religion on my part but more of a leaning, based on the fact that I really don't want to learn every skill and be Most High Glitchette with every giant. I just like cooking, blending, gardening, and petting pigs. :) So I lean heavy on the interests of Pot, Friendly, Mab and Humbaba (I think I got that right?)
Posted 22 months ago by Elbee Subscriber! | Permalink
  • As good as that suggestion is in theory glum, it doesn't really work right now. Because there's no alert system for groups, nobody (and I mean NOBODY) ever checks them.

This religion thing will probably be far easier to implement down the road.
Posted 22 months ago by Aldaris Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Glum: I know groups and participate in some of them, but for the moment i wanted to spread the word a little in a forum topic.
If i can get this idea running, i will found a group or whatever other option the devs provide us.

But for the moment, neither my church or the groups system itself are optimized, so for the moment this topic is enough =)

  • I started a group (that I think almost no-one will join), but who cares, as long as I one step in front of you Barneto :)
just kidding, but I would love to see these ideas being worked out.
