Please Help: Piggy Sanctuary in Alakol

For the past week, I've been maintaining a Piggy Sanctuary.  Alakol hosts the Dofsan Vex Quarter, a nice residential area of upscale homes.  On each of the 25 streets, I've endeavored to place at least 9 piggies.

I'm encountering a number of problems:  People like to steal grain.  Yes, it's extremely cheap and easy to get, and there are chickens all over each of the streets, but people still have a need to pick up whatever they find on the ground.  I have at least one neighbor who has put down helpful notes asking folks not to pick up the food, but that hasn't stopped people.  Don't get me started on the wanton pig snatchers.

The other problem, of course, is that I can't be on all the time.  My life in Glitch has become about feeding pigs.  I try and get in there as much as I can, but it never seems enough.

So, if you're short on meat, please come visit us at the Pig Sanctuary.  One pass through the neighborhood (at AK7) will net you at least 1700 meat.  The streets are likewise filled with butterflies and chickens as well.

But please, if you have a heart, drop some grain.  The piggies love you, but they need to eat.

I'd love to hear about other Piggy Sanctuaries, if anyone else has tried this little experiment.

  • This sounds awesome, I love piggies :)  But wouldn't it be easier to just feed the piggies, instead of leaving food on the ground?

  • Well, when you're harvesting that many pigs, you'll find that return-feed-(pick vegetable)-return-(pet?)-return-nibble-return-nibble starts to be a big hassle.  Not to mention leaving crap laying around the streets.

  • I left some food on most of the streets. Someone should name the piggies, though.

  • Aren't there trees on those streets?

  • Is there not trees on your streets?  As long as they are not wood trees the piggies will not starve.  If they are on treeless streets please let me know and we will set up a piggy rescue to relocate if the piggies are starving and unhappy.  Also piggies become unhappy when it gets crowded but  don't remember how many that is..

  • Well, they're not crowded.  I've found that at around 14 pigs per street, crowding becomes an issue, but 9 per street seems just fine.

And, no, we're not in an area with trees, unfortunately.  The folks living in the area have been helping with grain, we just periodically get some hungry pigs.

  • So it's you who's been littering my street with grain and pigs and plops and stuff? 0_0
You want your pigs and the mess associated with them on your street. Fine!
Don't expect me to like junk all over my street!
Myself and my partner own 4 out of the 5 houses on our street. We like it clean and tidy.  I have no clue about the feelings of the 5th house owner.
As for me, I say litter your own street, not mine please.

  • I'm not littering your street, I'm the guy providing you with a nearly limitless supply of meat at minimal effort.

Besides, I've been posting in the neighborhood association group for a week, now, about this.  You could have chimed in, then.

  • You're both right. Ebil et al who have purchased homes in Alakol have no obligation to support this initiative, especially as it's been done without their explicit knowledge or consent.

On the flip side, the gesture is completely understood - Snarkbutt is attempting to do something kind for others, and is putting a great deal of effort into doing so.

Home owners association or not, this is getting into "PLAY THE GAME MY WAY BECAUSE I AM RIGHT ALL THE TIME AND YOU ARE SUPER WRONG ALWAYS!" territory. A nice gesture can become over bearing and obligatory pretty quickly, especially when the person doing the nice thing starts to feel taken advantage of or unappreciated.

It's also important to note that the people who think something is a good idea are not always the people who are affected by the good idea.

Home owners groups are nice ideas, but they aren't compulsory, and they don't get to define rules for everyone. They're a nice way for home owners to chat in one place, but something agreed to in that forum doesn't give everyone a pass to do stuff because "everyone was okay with it" in that group.

  • I'm chiming in now :)
I have enough meat thank you. I have piggies in my pig pen, where I like piggies to be. That's why I live where I do.

  • Xev:  I didn't mean to imply that I was seeking permission to do so, only that the homeowner's association group had specifically requested it, and I had been following through with the request.  There is nothing mandatory or obligatory about my statement.  My point to Ebil was that if he had an objection, there was ample opportunity to make his objections known (even if it was "littering").

My only reason for posting here, today, was that I felt I was taking advantage of a resource I had set up for myself, and that no one else was really aware of its scope.  Everyone should be aware that, in case they need it, there is a Wonderland of Pigflesh Just Around the Corner.

As there are no resources to gather on the street other than the animals themselves (no trees, no rocks, nothing but gnomes and pumpkins), the fact that WoPJAtC exists in our neighborhood and not another doesn't actually have any bearing on how anyone else plays the game, except to give them an advantage if they choose to partake in it.

My only request here was, in this case, that should someone wish to partake, that they also contribute to feeding the little piggies.  *shrug*  I'm not demanding anything of anyone.

  • Dude, I hear you. I really do, and it sucks because the situation you're in is somewhere between a rock and a hard place. You are attempting to be a generous gamer, and in doing so running into some difficulties that occasionally negate the original intent of your actions.

The HOA is a moot argument. It's not compulsory - buying a house in Alakol (or anywhere else) does not also come with an HOA agreement. There are no fees, there is no arrangement. There are user-created groups, and that's kind of the end of it. Frankly, HOA is a huge, huge misnomer. Each HOA has virtually no power to kick out a rowdy neighbor, and frankly, they really shouldn't. The way real estate in this game works is fairly contradictory to a conventional concept of an HOA.

The idea that anyone should make their point known on the HOA forums also contradicts your post here. If you're going to use the HOA as defense for doing what you did in good faith, then take it up with them and see where it gets you. But we all know that the HOA is a) not representative of the majority of players living in those quarters, and b) doesn't have power over any of those players.

You're trying to do something REALLY NICE as defined by the way you play the game. You have invested in AK, clearly, and you are also evaluating resources and trying to create a huge resource where you see a need. This is not how others see it. Not by a long shot.

Take this opportunity to see Ebil's side of it. The reason Ebil moved to Alakol is because a) the houses have pens - there really isn't a need for the streets to be overrun with pigs. b) Location, aesthetic and lack of resources may indeed factor into the choice to live in this locale.

Additionally, by posting this in the public forums, as opposed to the HOA forums, you're saying "HEY, LOOK, I MADE THIS THING! EVERYONE COME HERE AND FARM SOME PIGS!"

So you're essentially inviting all of glitch to go to Alakol and overrun the streets farming piggies. I can kind of see how a few people might object to that.

*I know that's probably NOT what you intended, and I know that's NOT what you wanted to accomplish. My point is to try and show you how others perceive it. No one here is going to say you're a jerk - it's clear your intent was noble. But intent and outcome are two different things.

  • I think some people will naturally feed the pigs and others will react in their own special way. I was pleasantly surprised, in the game, at the increase in pigs on my street. The "pig food" note was good but perhaps a bit more explicit explanation of the number of pigs in the hood would help. I'll keep feeding them.

  • Why not have a sanctuary on a street with some trees on it?
Because, you know, trees and pigs get along.
