Dwindling interest...

Now, before I get flamed by anybody, this is just my view.

Lately, I haven't been feeling the motivation to pull myself to start playing Glitch. No idea why... maybe it's because I've completed almost everything in the game (apart from the insane amount of achievements and skills that take forever to learn).

Just wondering, does anyone here share the same fate as me? &, if not, is there any suggestion to ignite my interest again?

  • As has been stated before, they worked hard to optimize the game for level 1 through 20 at this point. Past 20 things do get slimmer and TS is aware of that.

Give yourself a self-directed project in the game, is the best answer. Actually, the best answer is that it is okay to walk away from the game for a bit. Let a month or two pass and then come back and see what is new.

  • There are a few topics that discuss this if you want to see some background, most recently Edward's The Hook:
    beta.glitch.com/forum/gener...

Two sort of similar topics (it's very hard to find topics in the Forum, by the way, feh):
more "give players busywork" recyclabes? In which staff specifically suggest staking a break to someone and is glitch awesome or awful or both? also discusses some of this stuff.

What keeps me coming back is the desire to try out what new things there are in the game, although I do find that these are quickly exhaustible.  Staff has stated the game will be ever evolving, so I guess my curiosity over what is to be keeps me coming back.

Not that I expect staff to release this info, but I am curious about attrition rates.  When looking at old forum posts, I often wonder, 'wow, where are these people now?'  There is definitely a core group of players, so I'm not suggesting in any way that it's dying, I'm just curious as to what keeps some people hooked and what leaves others to sort of drift away.

  • I create new personal quests/goals for myself to keep busy.  Sometimes I just get tired of inventing things and start walking all the streets.  That usually provides something of interest after a while.

  • Definitely think there needs to be more to keep up interest,  as around 20-30, there seems to be a lull.  Also, after that, there does need to be an incentive to keep playing.  I've had little trouble setting my own targets but the new stuff has to keep rolling in once you hit Level 30 and above.

My view is, that whilst I am OK setting my own targets and working them, I am here to be entertained.  I love this game because it's one MMO I've come across that's made me laugh and actually made me think at the same time.  Up to a certain point it kept throwing challenges at me, but now I have no quests, have almost finished the skills tree, thus I need some stuff thrown at me to make me think and do! :)

If you are around L 20 I'd say stick with it as there's a lot to be done especially as you complete your skills, but yes, hoping that more concentration is put on after 20, 30, 40, 50 etc:)

Zee, like you, I keep going to see what's thrown at me next! :D

  • You need to take a break from the game... Take time off. I continue to be enchanted and delighted by Glitch. I think alot of it is the friends I have in the game... For Pete's sake, if it don't float your boat, why play?

  • Well, I'm level 41 and I have the opposite problem that you do, @Serenadier (nice name, by the way). All I can think about is Glitch... when Glitch is off, all I want to do is play Glitch. When Glitch is on, all I want to do is play Glitch... it seems to be never-ending. Why such a difference? Here's my theory:

    1) Those who are used to playing sand-box games will enjoy Glitch more because they don't feel like they need specific goals given to them by the game at every moment. I've played every game genre there is extensively (except sports--blah), including sand-box, and I feel right at home with them.

    2) Projects are tuned for high-level players. If you like to work on them, you can go on indefinitely without getting bored. I LOVE projects, especially since we now get our name pasted on the street loading screen if we are one of the top three contributors--talk about a way to immortalize your efforts even after the wipe! If you don't like working on projects (and many people don't), then yes, there's not much left for you to do after level 20 or 30, unless you can create your own goals.

Edited to add: But, as others have already said, more will be added later for higher level players, so just take a break and come back later. The game is optimized for lower level players now to keep interest going at the beginning, and the devs have saved stuff to keep people playing for long periods of time for later.

  • Yeah, now that I'm a little more "mature" in my levels I've been having TONS of fun on projects. I just haven't found any recently...

  • True that. Maybe I like the fact your names go on the map page...

... anyway, thanks for the suggestions guys. Probably when the little cloud goes away I'll be back on track again. (:

  • Yea, I go through such moments for lots of games and find that a break usually gives me new life. That is one reason I sort of like the up and down of the game right now... usually by the time the game is back up, I'm ready to play (though very recently, I've had many moments where I'd like to pop on for a short bit- perhaps because I've had less time when the game was up lately). Sometimes though, it takes more than a few days to get the break you need.

Keep outside the box and don't be afraid to step away for a little while. :)

  • The only thing that pulls me in is to pop my head in to see 'what's new?'. And once I'm in, I can't stop.

  • What i do.. I set personal goals for myself in game.. the quests don't do that for me, although I like them.. I just pick out an area of activity that I want to plum the totality of and then put one foot in front of the other.  I'm only L24 so maybe that will change, but right now I don't feel short on things to throw my self into.

  • I can relate somewhat.. At first I wanted to play nonstop, learning & discovering everything & make my way through skills & achievements but now that Im a decent way in (although not as much as others) with everything taking longer & longer to do, the 'novelty' as worn off. I still enjoy it but if I cant get on when its open I dont feel Im missing out as much as I did at the start..

  • I'm level 60 but have hardly touched on most of the game.
When I first started I saw that there was "farming", cooking, "bartending" and critters that I could keep and take care of in this game ... which are the things that really appeal to me. So, when or if I ever get bored with that, I still have a lot of the game to play and explore.
Tho, I doubt I'll do anything but what I'm doing now in the game until after the game goes live - coz I'm still enjoying it immensely.  :)

  • I'm only at level 18, and have just started feeling comfortable with the game & learning a lot, reading posts and chat.  Have a busy schedule including 1hr commute to & from work M-F so I take advantage of the time when game is open, and haven't gotten bored yet.  Enjoy the forum and listening to all my fellow Glitches express their ideas, opinions, strategies, experience and most of all friendship.  That's what makes this game so cool.  I'm fascinated by the concept and development of Glitch.  Having come from a former MMO that was shut down, my appreciation of a "community" environment game has greatly increased.  The ease in which I can participate and make new friends here has been very cool.  The ability to be as involved or not, at my discretion is also a plus.  I find myself smiling a lot during game play - that's a great indicator of a good game.  Often find correlations in RL from game play - oh wait- or is that game play from RL !!! LOL... see what I mean.  With the better understanding of game play I can now strategize and plan out my time when game is open.   Love gardening and think the community herb garden is very cool.  Hope to participate in projects at some point.  There is a lot to do, depending on how mindless or adventurous I want to be.  I look forward to each time the game is open waiting to see what's new.  I don't jump right into a new thing, I watch the chats hear about all the awesomeness then I'm off to investigate.  So much more to do...... Even if I reach level 20 before the reset, I won't be sad, because there will always be more :)

  • The initial excitement's wearing off for me too. Although there's still a lot to do, things are becoming routine. Perhaps one way of keeping players interested could be to have special occasions? I'm sorry if this has been mentioned, or even already exists, but I have yet to see it. Holidays (religious? haha) seem to be marked here on the calendar, but I don't know if they have any meaning in the actual game. I haven't seen evidence that they have any effect so far, but I think organising some form of celebration would be fun. Even something small could be nice, like having batterflies outside Ilmenskie on Zille-o-ween, and these could be excuses to have parties after release! What do you guys think?
