New House Compost Bins?

Was just thinking it would be nice to have a compost bin for the new houses--we could throw food into the bin to compost and use on the gardens (as an alternative to guano).  Thoughts?

  • This suggestion has come up before, and I still like it. (would also be a good way to dispose of old notes and paper cups which would also biodegrade)

  • I love this idea :) The guano system is just incredibly tedious! Feeding ten meat to a batterfly over and over and slowly collecting the hundreds of poo needed is similar to getting seeds from piggies in sheer clunkiness ;)

It'd be awesome if this were similar to a still in the way that we'd add some units of food, with the energy output of the food being equivalent to the number of units it adds, and receive compost :)

Another thing is that fertilizing crops/herbs must be done twice for near-instant growth and it is a VERY slow process. It would be really nice if there was some way to speed this up as part of the upgrade? Perhaps the fertilizing bin would be attached to the garden and automatically applied?

  • We should be able to compost old cubis too. All those chick/piggie/firefly cubis will have a use besides decorations. :)

  • Great idea! Would love a compost bin, or maybe instead of a bin we could have Dung Beetles that crawl around in our back yards that have the same Still-like functionality suggested above by Liza.

ETA: YES to turning orphan cubis into compost. "Soylent Green is Cubis!"

ETA: Although cubi-compost might lead to Mad Cubi Disease.....

  • +500 ;D

And also, it would be cool if we produced a bit of trash in some actions, like glasses in the floor when we drink and dirty napkins when we eat, etc...

I really lob this idea ;)

  • Great idea! I was also thinking that Peat could also be used in the same way. +1

  • Aha, good idea!
And for all you with extra butterfly cubimals, drop 'em off at my doorstep at my /home, I will make them very happy and comfortable.

  • Dino - by "comfortable" do you mean "compostable"? ;)

  • oh yes:) really cool idea!
it would be great to have a compost bin, but to speed the process we would need to slice veggies, split planks, unscrew cubbies, rip papers and water at least once... yeah i know, too many verbs to click, but it would be a way to learn how to do it properly... though i don't throw cubbies at my real bin! lol

I would prefer something to increase yields, rather than two items that serve exactly the same function

And as an alternative to composting things we already have in game, it could be a new plant or bush that provides Mulch

  • @Idalia Dahlia - YES to paper and paper cups!!

@Liza Throttlebottom - Agreed on the similar functionality to the still.  In thinking about how it could be applied, perhaps as compost tea that could be brewed in a watering can, or, better yet, in the still and then added in concentrated form to a watering can...?

@maia gaia mira - That is a great idea.  Compost also needs to be 'stirred' every so often.  We could do this using a shovel to speed up the maturation process....

Was just thinking, too, that if 'cans of worms' were available from the gardening vendors, those could be added to the compost bin to help speed along the composting.

Thanks for your thoughtful responses, everyone!  Any other thoughts/comments/suggestions?

  • Fantastic ideas. +many numbers.

"Cans of worms" could be collected in jars like fireflies, instead of purchased from a vendor.

  • ... those worms could come from some new animal, if we could tickle him... he would drop like, let's say 111 worms to fill a can of 777...

  •  Oh, the Can 'O Worms could have other uses, to.  It could have at least two uses in its menu:  Add to Compost Bin, and Open.

And if you open it, maybe everyone would hear dramatic music, "Dun! Dun! DUN!"  And you'd get the text, "Uh, oh.  You've really opened a Can 'O Worms, this time!  Unfortunately, they've now all escaped, by flying through the air and landing on everyone around you.  Yeah, that's it!"

And then everyone would get the appropriate buffs and debuffs.  The person who opened the Can 'O Worms might get "Deep Embarrassment" which really doesn't do anything (except maybe prevent you from chatting for a short time), and everyone else would get "Righteous Indignation" which would provide a 5 point mood increase every ten seconds, for a short time.

Also, alternatively, you should be able to eat them.  "If nobody likes you, it's the thing to do.  But, somebody out there still likes you, so that didn't work right."  -20 mood, +5 energy.

  • Love this. Righteous Indignation would be a mood decreaser I think, but give you a small insignificant energy boost.

  • Caley, that would work, too!

I'm a sucker for the counter-intuitive joke, which is what I was suggesting.  People who are righteously indignant seem to enjoy it...  But, it's probably best not to think too much about it.

  • i love this bag of worms and composting idea, i hope the developers make it real :D i dont think it should not be bought, to make it a little more effort to get it. i would give both ideas a +∞.  and of coarse the "deep embarrassment". that would be awesome too  :)
Posted 9 months ago by Golden Apple Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Cayley and Carl, those are great ideas!  Perhaps opening a can of worms could cause a deep regret de-buff, like with poisoner's guilt, which would decrease mood for a little while.  The eating worms idea is pretty great, too.

Golden Hotdog, I think you are right--they should be earned through other actions in the game rather than being bought at vendors.  Maybe they could be earned when digging dirt or hoeing a garden patch (like we sometimes earn loam when digging), and stored in used crabato juice cans....
