Feats data and analysis

There's been a few feats already, so I think it's a good idea to share here some of the information I've collected from them. You can find the graphs and stuff here: http://resources.grelca.com/feats/

The graph at the bottom for each feat is a histogram based on the the list of top players and their contributions such as this one. The y-axis is logarithmic, which means that two-times increase on the y-axis means a ten-times increase in contributions, though note that the y-axis does not start from zero. The donut chart shows the total amount contributed by each group of players. Both charts are grouped by the rock reward they get. The sidebar shows the goals for each feat and the reward per unit of contribution.

N.B. The data for the conch feat is corrupted and should not be taken as accurate. The goals and rewards for failed feats (the Call to Feast) and early feats is incomplete.

If you want to play around with the data, or fix a bug in the site, the source code and data for this page is available on GitHub.

Analysis

The graph is mostly straight, which is the distribution you'd expect from leaderboards like this, but at around the 120-200th player the graph suddenly turns into a curve, with the gradient increasing dramatically. The disparity is so large for some feats that the leader is contributing ten times the amount the 100th player contributes. This could be due to the pressure to stay on the top of the leaderboards.

On certain graphs you can see a kink in the graph in the boundary from blue to pink. The is the difference between large rocks and medium rocks, and more importantly, having your image immortalized on the leaderboards instead of just a name. The high visibility of this boundary most likely fosters additional competition for players at the margin. The boundary between pink and orange is not highlighted on the leaderboards at all, and this the graph is smoother.

One last interesting thing of note is the fact that the currant reward for the Questing and Contesting feat is 50 currants per contribution - exactly the price you pay for repeating the Gwendolyn quest. Coincidence? or did TS anticipate players repeating this quest?

Notice other interesting titbit about the graphs? Thoughts? Flaming bags of guano? Post them below!

  • Interesting observation that there are big discontinuities based on recognition tiers. Maybe TS should add more (lower) tiers to create more achievable goals.

  • I don't know from math, but there's a typo on your landing page:  "Click on any of the feat above to begin."

  • First of all, this stuff is AWESOME! Yeah.

I can't help myself, the Math TA in me won't let me not say this:

Your y-axes are in fact logarithmic, so a certain linear increase (on the axis) corresponds to a 10x increase in value on that axis.

  • I'd like to see another graph that sorts contribution by level ranges.  Level 1-15, 16-30, 31-45 and 46-60.  The hypothesis is whether there is a correlation between your level and the ability to contribute.  Consistency vs. variability in each feats can change with requirements of
each successful contribution.  Can all Levels participate equally, or does feats favor higher levels?

I have no idea how to write code though.

That will depend on the feat too. The QQ collecting one favoured untravelled Glitchen, likely to be lower level too, as they could collect new street QQs. If you had no new streets to visit you could only get a max of 5QQ per game day

Donating a ton or two of sparkly obviously favoured higher mining skilled (or rich) Glitch, who are generally speaking the older players

  • I distinctly remember stoot commenting, in the context of that QQ feat that its fine for feats to favor certain groups of players, since there will be many feats and always room for different players to shine.

  • The latest Feat has given us interesting data: resources.grelca.com/feats/...

We have achieved the third Supermega Goal with just 4 hours remaining in the Feat.  We expected the Feat to be over, then GOD called us to "carry on" so whoever were close to 26th place started pushing themselves to get in 26th place or better, while the top 5 are trying to hold their places.  There is a slight rate of change  between 24th place and around 35th places.

  • Note that the range for Medium Rock is 27th to 179th place instead of 205th due to previously confusing wording.

  • Yup yup... top 26 gets a Large Rock, 27-179 get a medium, 180-1009 get extra small rocks, everyone who participates should get at least 1 small rock. Not seeing that there's a huge difference in those 25 though.

  • Thanks very much Boom & Bust. Love the graphs. Was "studying" the donut  graphs and was struck by the different contributions based on incentives. Very cool.  I have a request, can you add both the UR and earth dates to the pages. Would be cool to know what happened, when. Super job!
