Order of verbs for animals (naming / renaming)

Once you're able to name animals (let's stick with pigs for now), you have options:
• feed
• name
• nibble
• pet
(in that order)

BUT, once a pig *has* a name, you have the following options:
• feed
• nibble
• pet
• rename
(in that order)

Note that "name" (which had been above "nibble") is now "rename" (and is below "pet"). (Alphabetical order, of course.)

I use the keyboard almost exclusively, and I like that I can select the pig I want to interact with, hit the up arrow once to pet, then hit the up arrow twice to nibble. When the pig has a name, that muscle memory is goofed, and I accidentally trigger the "rename" process, when I'm really just trying to pet McPigglesworth.

So ... it'd be great if "rename" could be forced into the stack order at the second position, right where "name" is when the pig is nameless. If that makes sense.

  • This is off-topic of animals, but you've reminded me about just how many times I've managed to drop my freakin' blender because on most, if not all other tools, the use verb is on the bottom of the list and I have similar keyboard habits. A bit more consistency of the placement of the default options would be very much appreciated!!

  • This has been driving me nuts too.  Can "rename" be moved somewhere higher up?  It's something I almost never do.

  • Please, a standard for everything would be nice

  • Definitely agree!! I do the muscle memory is really helpful except in these cases.

  • I posted something similar for food/drink items.  Yes, having standard menus for things would be most helpful vice various placement of selections.  I've noticed lately on the trees that the selections actually move based on if you've done it nor not...I'd rather have the menus standardized and static vice dynamic. (Or at  least give me an option for static menus or dynamic menus in the set up menu, since the dynamic option may appeal to some).

  •  YES PLEASE!

There's really no difference between Name and Rename... at least,  I don't think it's confusing to leave it as Name if the thing already has one.  I'd certainly be able to guess which one I need

I love the dynamic menus,  makes it so much quicker to get stuff done...  but animal interactions outside of my garden (where nothing has a name) are a  real bugger.

  • Once upon a time, the menu commands where in a random order.... and we asked the Giants for order. They gave a brilliant thought to one of the devs, who brought out the tinkertool and gave us order (was that eric or hitherto?)... and order reigned!

The dynamic menus rock, and I love them dearly. Actions are in alphabetical order and 'slide up' when unavailable to get them out of your way.... but I have to admit I've stopped naming pigs to make it easier to navigate the pet/nibble commands. As OP pointed out, giving then a name generates the Re-Name command, which gets in the way of process flow.

It's a band-aid (because it doesn't fix the mechanics of it - but I think the mechanics aren't broken), it's easy... and shouldn't require a massive amount of programming changes.
Swap the word 'Rename' for 'Change Name' and the command stays out of your way, because C is further up the alphabet.

  • I agree.

  • "Swap the word 'Rename' for 'Change Name'"

And for similar reasons, perhaps we could "Chant" rather than "Sing" to butterflies...

Or "Hum". Certainly not "Whistle" though...

  • I think it is Name and then Rename a) to highlight that animal has already been give a name once (ok you may say we'd notice that,  but perhaps not everyone does in the 'excitement' of 'naming' their 1st piggy).  b) There is a limit to how many times a animal can be renamed.  Thus, if is was just one generic verb, some might think it was not working correctly when they tried to change the name.  HTH

ETA, just noticed this is a pretty old thread, but clicked on a recent update link.  Sry folks!

  • @Jobynana glad you did! I'd rather post in an existing thread than start an unnecessary one. Also, when you can't rename, I'm pretty sure it's greyed out or otherwise unavailable to use, so I'm not sure it would matter whether it was "name" all the time or not.

I've noticed the menu order oddness for a while now. At first it was just drinks that bothered me... with food, "eat" is at the bottom, but with drinks, "drop" is at the bottom... and since I rarely used drinks when I started playing, I tended to drop them when clicking fast. Now that I have AK6, I want "nibble" and "milk" at the bottom for easy access.

I'd much prefer menus be semi-standardized, aka unavailable ones slide up, and other actions stay in a consistent order throughout item type (consumables, animals/trees, tools, etc). Things like "drop" and "sing" should be towards the top to avoid mishap, and the most likely action should always be at the bottom. Ideally (for me, at least), if a skill like AK6 changes the way we are liable to interact, the menu order should change to reflect that. (Ok, I'm sure there are people that like to pet/water first before nibbling/milking/harvesting even with that skill, so maybe not.)

  • How do you rename a piggy? I don't see the option. Does it have to be at your house?

  • sel, the ability to name (or rename) an animal comes with Animal Kinship V.
