Glitch on a Jolicloud machine

Short: Works GREAT!

Long: I removed access to my favorite timewasters from the laptop I do my work on, figuring that I'll be more mindful of how much time is going out the window if I have to switch to another computer. However, my netbook performance is so crap that what used to be five minute facebook breaks turned into 10, and Glitch was just intolerable.

My netbook is an HP Mini 110, 1G RAM, 250G HD, 1.67 (iirc) and it has pretty much always run like ass due to HP bloatware and other factors. I used it mostly for cafe work, library, powerpoints. It hasn't been used much at all in the last year because my phone is better at mobile computing.

I wiped the whole thing and made it a Jolicloud machine. Anyone familiar with Android will blaze through the setup. The whole process took about 15 minutes. There is already a Glitch shortcut in apps (looks like 8 people already do this) with a graphic, which was a fun discovery.

It looks better than it has ever looked - faster, cleaner, scaled correctly (that never worked before on this netbook, the bags got cut off, the windows were wonky, on all my browsers) to the display, just really great. If you're frustrated with how Glitch runs on a netbook, it's worth a try. It's free.

I wiped the whole netbook instead of doing a trial installation of Joli; if you choose a dual-boot installation it might not work as well, I can't say.

  • When I saw the name Jolicloud, I thought it might be a name for an imagined Ur transit system. Riding from street to street on jolly, fluffy clouds. :)

  • Thanks for posting Aviatrix!

Jolicloud is built as a customization of Ubuntu, meaning there is a large and active community should you or anyone else ever makes the leap from PC/Mac to Linux.

Operating systems like Jolicloud are "Get out of Hell Free" cards for old or otherwise "fail" hardware.

ETA: Posted from a very biased Ubuntu machine.

  • I love Jolicloud! This netbook just became useful again - especially since I found Writer and can get to all my Dropbox stuff.

  • I may try the duel boot!  In which case, I will report back.

  • This sounds interesting.  I have a netbook that has been essentially dead/blue screened because I loaded a bad driver (and have been too lazy to do much else with it)...been looking for something new to try with it, and this sounds like a great idea. Thanks for posting.

  • It's super easy, b3achy - takes about 5 minutes to make the key (you need a 1G data stick), then you cold boot the netbook and hit Esc and choose the stick as the boot media. Then it's just a few clicks, and voila.

I'm mostly thrilled that whatever it does makes the game scale correctly to this little display.

  • It's working pretty dang well on an EeePC with dual boot with Windows XP!  Very slick, indeed!

It's a totally clean dual boot, so Windows isn't even loaded when Jolicloud is running.

  • Great to hear it, Carl! Thanks for sharing the results of making a dual boot with it!
