Spammed with group invites

I like to lurk in the shadows of the glitch forums.  But as of late, there's something that's come to my attention and needs to be brought to light.  I've recently been asked to join Glitch Addicts.  There's nothing wrong with sending out group invites.  But after being asked for the 4th time, I'm getting a little annoyed (just a tiny speck).  Is there some kind of block feature where we can prevent group invites?  That would be nice.

  • Hello Skye, was the invite from me? If so, I do apologise..people friend me and ask for invites to the group and it's hard to remember who has asked - hence I just invite people every now and then! I suppose I'll have to start keeping notes rather than just opting for the quick click option! *makes note to make notes* =)

  • I'm having the same problem. I keep getting invites to the same 3-4 groups over and over again. Perhaps an option with declining an invite to check a box that I don't want to receive. an invite to this group again? I don't want to turn off all invites in case it's a group I want to join

  • I tend to just join them, then leave later on. I do agree though that it would be a good option to have a way of opting out of future invites. The check box seems like a good idea.

  • I agree with you Skye Logic.  Having the ability to toggle off an option of not receiving group invitations would be bonus.

In addition to this ~ would also like to see the ability to send out group invitations without having to friend someone.

  • Morticia, I appreciate your invite and love Glitch Addicts!  I did get two invites but I just ignored the second one - no problem for me.

  • One person's SPAM is another person's treasure.
    *winks*

@Fussycat you also bring up a good point about declining invitations from certain groups you already have checked out and have no interest in receiving additional invitations to.

  • This was (and is) a problem with Flickr groups, too (no ability to say, I declined this invite once, I never want another from this group again).

I think it works the same as Flickr, too.  If you never want to join the group, just let the invite sit - neither accept it or decline it.  Then (maybe?) you won't get another invite from that group.

  • @Brib Annie - thank you!! {{hugs}} sorry about the 2nd invite LOL - blame it on over-enthusiasm...or extreme fatigue - either will do!

  • @zeeberk great idea about leaving the invite sit!

  • Popularity has its downside I guess!

  • When you get a group invite from someone who is your friend, do nothing - don't respond - and the sender of the invite will not be able to resend it, as it's status remains "Pending."

    "Problem" solved.

  • What zee and Meher have said is the easiest solution.
You can also ask the sender not to send it again (which wouldn't prevent others from sending an invite), but leaving it sit puts the invite and invitee into a Pending status and additional invitations can't be sent.

Groups have no real method is seeing who is going, and because the decline option on invites is 'secret' - other players have no way of knowing if the invitation was declined or the person joined and left, or if the player likes to group-hop. If you've reached your max Groups, you need an invitation to join / rejoin the Group.

I really think Group members are sending repeated requests out of an effort to be helpful and not because they are trying to spam or harass people. Saying something about not wanting to join *can* help, but sitting there quietly mad and/or annoyed tends not to solve things. Perhaps what we need is an 'ignore future requests' that then removes you from the possible invite list from the Group screen.

  • The let it ride option seems adequate to me.. Trav, I think your right, its mostly just people trying to be helpful and I see no reason to resent that, after all, how long does it take to decline a request?  I like you solution of Ignore future Requests button for each group but wonder if that might not be somewhat cumbersome for the Devs to dev as this would have to be tracked by the program for what will become multiple thousands of players.

On that note, I guess I'm on the Flip Side :DD of this discussion, because I love getting invites to groups!  Recently I have been dropping and joining groups just because I want to find out what they're really discussing and there's no option to know that without joining.

So here are several groups I either have dropped so I could check in to others or am simply interested in joining.  If anyone would send me an invite it would be greatly appreciated :)

    Tiny Speckles
    Alchemy/Alchemistry Lounge
    Geeky Nerdy Talk
    Glitch Addicts
    Glitchodone Clinic
    Global Social Chit Chat
    Peoples Army for Revolutionary Principles
    Party Planning Association
Glitch Free Trading and Group Activities
    Happy Crabs
    FSRF Help
    Limenskie Miners

also, last but not least.. what was s.c.o.o.t. and where did it go??

  • Princess FI I'd send you a invite to innerGlitch Community group but you have shown profound wisdom by already being a member!

  • Thinking about the Ignore Future Requests button idea.. could be a problem unless you could un-ignore it, cause.. what if you changed your mind later?  You'd have to back out of all but 6 groups to join in that case..

  • @Princess Fi: invited you to Happy Crabs, the Clinic, FSRF Help and Tiny Speckles. Not in the others:) Cheers!

  • I drop and join groups willy nilly. It's not because I want to leave a group for any reason, just so many are formed and I can't keep up with them all so I flit about. Dip a toe here and there.

  • I think the 'Ignore Future Requests' option could easily be undone by adding a button to the Group itself... much like the Unblock on people works right now. All you would need to do to receive future requests would be view the Group and click a button to begin 'seeing' requests again.
It's worth noting, Block doesn't actually prevent most 'chat' or actions... rather it suppresses their ability to see the functions, and suppresses your visual display of things like Chat and Local activities (along with a couple other more complicated things).

Also - keeping track of pending requests is not (apparently) cumbersome to the developers. They already work in a 'pooled' manner. If Person A invites someone, Person B will not see it as an option to invite them a second time. The box to Invite is grayed out, (Invited) appears next to their name, and they appear in the list of Pending Invitations at the bottom of the group list. Since invitations are already sent in this manner, ignoring invitations from a Group should be a simple fix. I'm arguing for it on the side of the people who think seeing the bubble with Pending Requests is annoying and/or have a compulsion to make it go away.
