  • The timer should be extended to make up for the downtime, but probably will not.  Hope we make it.

On the second page, my number was monotonically increasing. On the other, it jumped back and forth between 0 and the same number as the second page, all while we were in the bonus feat...

  • Hey, does anybody know of where the prizes are announced? I can see a list of people in order of how many QQ they collected but I think we all get a share of currants and I can't seem to find any announcement about that now that the feat is over.  I'm kinda new as well so wasn't in any other feat before so not sure on how the whole thing works.

And _hristine, I keep meaning to die and find out what happens but I just never get around to it. ;o)

Posted 61 days ago by SallySomeone Subscriber! | Permalink
  • AbleMableSallySomeone: The rewards will be distributed a little later tonight — we found a bug at the last minute with the way the petrified rocks work, so that's causing the hold-up.

  • Could you consider putting the feats into the quest area as well?  If you don't hang around outside of the game much, it can end up being kinda surprising when suddenly you are rewarded for a feat you didn't even know you were taking part in.

  • Feeling a little frustrated right this minute that the requirements were changed from have the conch to have the conch and blow it once without any real notice. I just spent a couple hours mourning and dying, thinking I was contributing, when I wasn't, because I had put my conch in an SDB as soon as I got it (which was immediately after the conch blowing feat) instead of blowing it. My mistake, but...

  • Tanaise: Putting information about the feat into the quest log is a good suggestion — thanks.

Belle Z. Bub: the requirements have always been the same — and, until you've blown the conch, there is a prominent notice everywhere on the website where we feats are mentioned which says (roughly)  "you can't contribute to the feat until you've blown the conch". However: how could you go all the way through that quest and then get the conch and not be tempted to blow it?? It's the only thing you can do with conches ;)

  • The second time I went through the quest (with my alt) so that I could contribute faster to the greater good, I forgot to blow the conch, and then went around collecting qurazy quoins -- because I was so excited to be doing the quest.  But, I feel rather stupid about it, and not in the slightest bit like I was ill informed.

  • Just curious, why do the feats give mood and energy as part of the reward?  This would only actually be a benefit if the rewards were given out in the middle of a game day and the player receiving the rewards happened to be logged in during that game day.  My experience so far has been that I log in, it is a new game day for me, and I get the rewards, so the mood and energy do nothing.

Am I missing some trick to ensuring that the mood and energy rewards are useful?

  • Don Monkey, I agree with you. The Mood and Energy shouldn't really be part of the reward. Especially as the feat should end at the end of the game day.  (It would be different that mood and energy were rewarded out as each goal level was hit.)

I should note that the TS team has done a better job with "setting the goalposts" on these past two feats than were done with the first 2 test feats.

  • I'm generally not very happy with the feat system. The basic goals to unlock content are trivially easy again. There is still no chance of failure, so the system focuses us on leaderboards. The small petrified rocks are yielding mostly small amounts of currants and it wasn't worth spending >5 hours to make Junior Associate for a second apparently very small chance at an artifact piece. It seems to be a "top 26 or bust" situation. If there is some interesting or compelling reason to get to the Bonus or Supermega stages, like additional game content unlocked or more rocks for everyone, it has not been communicated on the Feat pages.

In order to reach the top 26 and get a medium or large rock, people are playing for 24 hours straight. I think it's fair to ask any game designer "What the heck were you thinking???" when a situation comes up that rewards players for sitting at the keyboard that long. Even in feats with daily limits, there is a Glitch day from 2am-6am in my time zone. If I want to leaderboard I have to set an alarm to catch all six days. That still rates a "What the heck were you thinking???"

Please, Stoot, make the Feats actually hard. Set it up so unlocking the content is the interesting part and the rocks/leaderboards are secondary. I don't want to feel like I have to log in stupid lengths of time for a chance at a decent rock and not a small one. I want to feel like I worked hard, so very hard, alongside my fellow Glitchen to open new content and had I not hunted down every QQ I could find, or selflessly died dozens of times to be mourned, we would have failed.

  • I joined in on the 'Die & Mourn Fest' in Oktyabrya earlier, but it wasn't long before I thought 'What the devil am I doing here? Where's the fun in waiting for someone to croak, and then try to beat everyone else to 'mourn/celebrate'?!
Feats are a really nice idea/concept, that could/should add color and depth to the story of 'Glitch', but -IMO- they are ruined by how they are being achieved.

  • It's nice to see some streets full of players again, no matter the reason. Empty streets make me bitchy.
Posted 60 days ago by N2ZOrtolanaBlue Subscriber! | Permalink
  • As I have visited all the places I only picked up 7 QQ's last night before realising I would never hit the leadership board and gave up and went back to watching Red Dwarf. A friend of mine spent about 7+ hours visiting all the streets she'd never been to and collected 540+ qq's.

My friend got 200 currants and I got a piece of an artefact. I'm not complaining, but I completely understand why she's so upset. (I will give her mine as she earned it).

There does need to be some more tweaking, but I guess that's to be expected in the testing phase.

  • Agreed, Scilly!  I was looking forward to new content, collaborative efforts, etc., but to me, the feats have been day-long grind fests, not interesting or fun.

  • I actually really like the feats, but hate the way that the mourning one is set up. If you want to really do well, you stand around and mourn other people and don't die yourself. Last time I was at Cebarkul, it was full of people who were just milling around and waiting. It seems like it would've made more sense if both the dying _and_ the mourning counted for this particular quest--I'm sure that there are people who've died dozens of times and have only managed to mourn once or twice, and it seems unfair that they're getting shut out.

(Also, giants help you if you're trying to mourn/celebrate and you've got any lag at all. So frustrating!)

  • Meghan: yeah, I tried the group thing and it didn't work for me. The best strategy seems to be finding a friend or two and alternating dying/mourning.
Posted 60 days ago by Fernstream Subscriber! | Permalink
  • liked the Qurazy Quoin but it is biased to those who have not visited most of the map.
really dislike this mourning one. Cant even team up with people because they are just waiting around for you to die so they can mourn you. Forcing people to team work is making me see a lot of people be incredibly selfish. I've managed to mourn 6 people in 24 hours. I've died over 50 times. Completely unbalanced, I tried to help and take part, I'm not getting any payback. Making me want to take a break from the game.
Oh and those dying go through a load up of hell, and a load back in to the street. taking you away from being able to mourn others. I really don't want to spend feat time watching the same loading screens over and over.
Posted 60 days ago by jiva Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Jiva, I agree with you that dying should count.

But I disagree on the QQ point - if a feat comes up that is energy intensive then new players will loose almost automatically.

  • This Feat definitely works best in very small groups. Or pairs. I set up a small party in my tower last night (after emptying it to reduce lag) that had, at most, 4 people at any given time. Every time I mourned someone, I died myself. That's not how all of us were doing it, but if you were better friends with someone and just did it in a pair, I'm sure it could work well that way.
Hell was loading was so slow though, and some assbutt used sneezing powder in there last night, it took me probably about 5 minutes just for the animation to finish. That was no fun. It was very frustrating and honestly I can't even play today because the lag is so awful world-wide. This is maybe not the greatest Feat plan, because it seems clear now that the servers are not made for this kind of activity, but we all are learning at least! It was good in theory, but in practice it is not working so well. If you're frustrated by the lag and the selfishness I highly suggest pairing up in small locations with very few items + resources to load.

  • This is the first feat I've managed to participate in... I have to admit I don't really see the attraction... I'm standing around in Cebarkul with dozens of other people, just waiting for someone to die, hoping I'll be quicker than everyone else to mourn. Meanwhile, I'm trying to use up all my energy so I can die too. (I'm glad I came here and read that dying doesn't actually help me). How is this entertaining? I'm lucky I managed to mourn one person, so I can see the feat through to the award stage.

  • It seems the system is gamed pretty easily by just pairing off and dying/mourning in turns for hours on end.

    How fun.

  • Stoot, both FlatEarther and I mentioned up-thread that it wasn't an obvious requirement that you had to have blown the conch to participate in the feat, so I think Belle's complaint is fair. It was confusing to many people. There was lots of chat at the beginning of the QQ phase about whether you had to blow it once ever, whenever you were going to collect a quoin, just carry it with you or what. People weren't sure.

If the 'blow' instruction did appear to players who hadn't yet blown the conch, but not others, people who were sharing info in chat might not be sharing the correct information. For the future, if the instructions to everyone could be clearer about prerequisites, etc., that would be great!

I like Glitch because it's collaborative and NOT competitive, and I don't like how feats have brought in winners and losers. Competition is sadmaking. It's clear that the way this is going some players will eventually win/collect entire artifacts that will never be available to the losers to earn.

+1 to Lucille Ball and disliking the way the focus on individual prizes and leaderboards makes this a competition. The reward for feats should be universal - something that benefits all of Glitch, not individual prizes.

+1 on imbalance–dying and mourning should have been equally counted. (I did work in pairs or small groups, but still had serious imbalance problems and dying became for the benefit of the people on the leaderboards who are getting a special prize; I stopped bothering.)

+1 on lag mainly when going from room or street to Hell and back.

I do love how the feats are getting people out and about in the streets of Ur, interacting with each other more and generally being wacky. People are enthusiastic about meeting the goals and having fun!

  • I think it'll be hard to set up a feat that everyone's happy with. There will always be someone at an advantage or disadvantage in each one.

I suspect I may not participate in 'em very often, even after they become regular. It does seem to reward grinding, though I appreciate that this likely wasn't the intent when they were conceived. I ran my (pre-existing) alt like a little maniac during the QQ feat, felt great about advancing the total by over 330 QQs, got sucked into losing 2 hrs' sleep on a work night after getting caught up in watching the feat leaderboards...and ended up getting pretty much the same reward as VS, here, who did about 55 QQs. Both accounts walked away with about 200-250 currants. It's fun to watch as a spectator, but the way we play them overall seems grindy to me. I'm definitely curious to see the third phase of this one, all that said.

Maybe over time, as the novelty wears off a bit, we'll be a little more casual or collaborative about feats and our emotions will settle. ...Maybe.

  • I felt bad that I don't die, so I made lots of no-no and gave it and all my hell cards that I've been randomly collecting away, and just mourned people who offered or died on my street while collecting no-no. It was pretty fun to find a way to help!

As for the conch, the original quest does outright tell you at the end to blow it. If you're not just trying to plow through the quest and are into it, you'll blow that conch. I actually thought it was part of completing the quest, but I guess it wasn't? And some people hadn't?

  • Colette: "It's clear that the way this is going some players will eventually win/collect entire artifacts that will never be available to the losers to earn."

I don't think so: all someone has to do is take one action during a feat in order to have a chance at an artifact piece, and the actions which count as contributions to a feat are typically things that players do anyway. So, as long as aren't in an urgent rush to get all the artifacts, they can collect them, leisurely, in the normal course of play.

  • Don Monkey: mood and energy rewards may only be useful sometimes (the times when you are online when feat rewards are distributed; since if a new day passes between the time they are distributed and when you come online, one will generally make the other one redundant) — but that doesn't seem like a good reason to remove them. Even without hitting the bonus level, there will still be at least one of iMG, currant or favor rewards as well (and two or three of those at the bonus levels).
Posted 60 days ago by stoot barfield Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Lucille Ball: What do you suggest? It seems like if it is both too easy AND people are staying up for 24 hours straight, wouldn't making it harder mean that people stay up for 36 or 48 hours? :)
