General Chat window

Hi Developers,

Can we request a general chat channel separate from the Help Chat?  There seems to be a lot of non-"Help me!" related chat in there.  And it would be cool to have a cross Glitch chat.

  • having this, or something like it available would be great -- unwieldy yes, but hey, sometimes people like unwieldy!  :)

  • +1 its a pain to add to a group for a general chat. new players wont know how to do this. there should be a general chat tab under help etc

  • I thought that was what the Global Chit Chat Forum/group was for? Regardless, the Help Channel is going away, so it won't matter
Posted 20 months ago by Essie Kitten Subscriber! | Permalink
  • if it's not available to everybody by default, it's not truly global, especially with group limits, and the fact that the help channel is going away is the reason for this request!

  • @sc803.. you are totally right, but when I was talking to the walls ;) about this in help chats... it seems that "joining a group" was not as intuitive as it may seem, so perhaps a general chat for noobs sake would benefit.  On the other hand, like you said... with the help chat gone....

  • I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it won't ever happen: we are getting very close to the point now where it would start breaking (from too many people) and with just a 10x increase (never mind 100x or 1,000x) it would be far beyond broken. But, we have some other ideas!

  • Other games don't have live help chat for all players, so I'm sure even newbies can figure something out if pointed in the right direction through tutorials or what-not...

  • Oh good! Other ideas! *clap clap*

  • The addition of greeters is helping, I'm sure. Giving some "personal" help to someone to make sure they have the basics down. To me, the game was very intuitive, but it may not be to someone who didn't grow up in the era of text-only computer games (can't really call them video games when there was no video).

  • I feel like we're all in high school right now, and as soon as we graduate (go live) we're going to lose touch with each other! Glitch Testers of '10/'11 UNITE!

  • It'd be nice to see larger area chats. Instead of street level chats, have a whole Groddle Heights or Shimla Mirch channel. We'd be able to chat with neighbors, coordinate resource-gathering, etc. Would something like that be too big? I have no idea how  many areas there'll be & how crowded those will be once the game goes live...It seems like it'd be a good middle ground between street level chatting and global chatting though.

  • Jhennauchan, I've thought the same thing!

  • As I've seen devs repeatedly state, global chat doesn't scale. During this last test, the help channel already started showing signs of pandemonium. It's simply not practical. I have trouble believing that once the flood gates open, y'all really will want to chat with thousands of players. You already have your friends in the game.

That said, with the lack of competition and other normal game elements, the only real lasting appeal of Glitch [currently] is the community. New player retention (past a few weeks) looks to be rather bleak in this community based game model when instant global connection disappears. Making in-game friends won't be natural for new players when the best they get is passing one another on the same street. I'm interested to see what other ideas the devs have, as stoot noted. And for the record, I'm making sweeping statements talking about the largest common denominators.

  • Group chat works and it works well. I have two or three groups open all the time plus the IM windows. It is much easier to read or control. If the newbies join a newb group, and can leave it at will, a few of us would be sure to help Mod it. It is a much simpler fix than a big pile-on.

  • Jhennauchan, "If none of us are attached to another game in 10 years, we'll meet, right here under this Giant. And we WILL play again. We will. I love you guys... Love.... pass me another beer." :)

  • MoF, baaaahahahaha. Literally laughed out loud at that one. This is why I love this game. The community is just so great!

  •  I like having the help channel; separate from other group channels. Wish there was a way to prioritize help related text ( maybe by pressing some key before typing). Most of the help was lost in the chit chat and spam.

  • i'm all for the idea of area level chat instead of street level.
couldn't global chat be used in another browser window or tab / hosted off of a separate server, whatever? how many users do the heavy traffic irc rooms contain? most of us have two monitors right?

  • Will groups reset when the game goes live?

  • The problems with a Global Chat still apply when you're talking Region Chat... 2,000 people talking simultaneously is way too many, and that is entirely possible in a region.

I'm all for keeping a variant on the Help for new people, but I agree it's badly abused at this point... often by the people who mean to help the most. By this I mean all of the 'hi's' and 'how was your weekends'... Help is also a pretty broad term and 'can you auction 20 earth' is technically help, but not the intended purpose.

What about a private Group you are automatically a part of, and then a Quest around Level 5 which requires you to leave it and join a new one? To get the 'answer' people in there, perhaps you get a message at Level 15 that says 'Congratulations, you seem to have it together. Would you like to rejoin the Group?'... then somehow leave the Group (option) out there to join. Could it be left as a permanent/recurring item in Requests? It would be really nice if it didn't count to the Group total.

  • I've only got a couple judgements to pass:

    1. I like Leah's idea to think more local instead of Global at-Large.

    2. I like Trav's Idea of different levels being put into certain halp groups. It seems like its got a Tribe-Building-ness-abilty to it. Also, it sounds like something an authoritarian-all-knowing leadership group would do in a utopic world, therefore I love the idea!

    D. On the topic of actual Halp!. I think if you see someone shout for HALP! in a channel then you should private message them and ask what they need help with. Just sayin'!

    4. It's the year 2011, if anyone can make it happen, Tiny Speck can make it happen!

$. You're all playing it wrong!

  • Other games I have been part of the test team for made and used IRC channels, which were linked from the site, this allowed for community support and interaction without the drain on the games resources. Just a thought.
