Glitch National Bank MINT

Found a note just a bit ago with directions to go to tinyurl.com/glitchnationalb... for information and list of reps.  It opens a spread sheet and the number I have is on the spread sheet. No listing of reps.  Has anyone else found one?

  • Please visit the Glitch National Bank Group at http://beta.glitch.com/groups/RA5SQ17ELT22CG4/

You will find a thread with a list of Reps as well as a FAQ to explain the Glitch Notes.

We are a new and growing bank, thanks for your patience.

  • I found one also.

  • Hmmm, not sure this sounds overly kosher to me...I have to join a group before I can view the FAQ, vice them putting it out there for public scrutiny (er, feedback) like a notice in the forums?  Guess I saw so many scams in the last game I played, that I'm overly skeptical of people that aren't up front about what they are doing...I hope they are trying to be helpful to others, but being so 'mysterious' about it makes me wonder what they are up to...

  • En - I was checking my husband's skill time and went to the forums and saw this thread, so I checked out the groups and found a new group for the Glitch National Bank. So when I hit join it let me (I forgot I was in my husband's account, mine has the groups maxed out) I read your threads and then left the group since I just wanted to see what it was. Sorry if that messes up your count, just trying to check out your bank.

  • To anyone that found a Glitch Note, I am online if you want to redeem it for Currants.

@Gizmospooky, no worries, you didn't mess anything up. The group is just there so I had a general place for people to get info on the Glitch National Bank.

@b3achy, a healthy dose of skepticism is a good thing. We aim to earn the trust of those interested in using our services. Having to join a group is just a way of having all the info consolidated in one place rather than in the general forums where info could get lost. We'll make it easier to get info on Glitch National Bank without having to join any groups in the future.

  • Ahh, now that was fun - I joined - En found me in game and we did a trade = note for 1,000 currants... very lucky find on my part.. and thank you Glitch National Bank :)

  • Hilarious. I know people are trying to keep a different culture in Glitch than in Eve, so who knows what will happen.

But everyone considering using the service should google "Eve Bank" and see what happens.

  • For those of us who are in too many groups, what's the gist of this?
Posted 19 months ago by glum pudding Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Glum Pudding - pretty much you find a "note" which have been dropped in random places. I really don't know why you must join the group unless it is to build up a "banking community" or to entice others to assist as board members.  En is pretty much running the entire thing at the moment.  He/she found me in game and it was an easy trade from there.

  • The problem with any in-game bank managed by players is that the funds are not insured by any entity.  One fucked-up event (such as happened at Eve) and a run on the bank occurs; unless the other players running the bank are fiscal experts (um, such as happened at Eve - they survived the fiasco), the whole bank could collapse, players could lose their currants, reputations could be tarnished and the hilarity (?) of drama ensues.

This isn't about trust really; en and clare are two of the most reputable players in Glitch, but then so was the guy that started the Eve Bank.  Even if they remained 100% trustworthy, I'm sure it wouldn't take long for a scoundrel to concoct a run on the bank or other banking grief out of thin air.  Or what happens when real life events take the bankers out of the game?

I like the idea of a bank and commend the players who have started this bank, but I really really really fear that this will end in tears.  Perhaps the devs could consider a game-run bank instead (which would have the advantage of being 'insured' so to speak).  Or create a way for players to become insured bankers.

  • Obviously there are many things about a player bank to discuss and debate, but I thought i would instead tell you why I am even bothering to try this out and what we are up to...

First, I have over a million currants and being late game, there just isn't much interesting to buy anymore. So the currants stack up and stack up. Rather than continue buying things like sno-cones or participating in the auction/project feeding frenzy I wanted to try something different.

At first I thought I would just give away the money. Did that a little bit, but ultimately that was boring too and had little impact on the game.

    SO!

I thought I would try to create an alternate form of currency for trading, loans, etc in the game. Perhaps this currency will go up in value, and maybe not.

The Bank's first endeavor, to create an alternate currency called a Glitch Note using paper. There are mechanics built into the creation of Glitch Notes that allow you to check their authenticity. Those who choose to join the board of the bank are offering to back the Glitch Notes for exchange into Currants. However, the notes can only be cashed in after a period of time hopefully encouraging people to trade with them until that time.

Who knows what will happen. I sure don't. Just thought it would be something fun to do in the game. If you want to participate or are still interested just let me know. Looking for others who want to participate in this experiment because it's hard to do with just two Glitchizens!

  • Thanks for the explanation en!  I found a note not long before we shut down, but I just read the note and set it back down.

Interesting...  so a Glitch Note might be used in a trade rather than currants, yes?

I thought I read somewhere that notes have a limited life?  Really not sure about that though.

Might be fun to play with since we'll all be losing everything anyway!! <g>

  • Yes, the idea is that you could use a Glitch Note in a trade. There are some short-comings right now that we have to think about (and maybe the devs could help with). Like...

You can't read a note from the trade window OR from the auction. So for now, there is some goodwill involved that would require you to either make the trade in faith OR for the other party to drop the note so it can be read (and hope nobody runs off with it). Not the ideal scenario here, but we'll come up with something. Also hoping the group halls and those dynamics will help with certain things.

So, like I said, there are some issues to work out, but it's fun discovering them and finding ways to make it work!

And yes, since everything will get reset again, it's fun experimenting now!  ;)

  • Hey en!  What a cool idea.  I've only been exploring Glitch for a few days and have been really excited to see how players are exploring different ways to expand the game.  I'll keep my eye out for GNB!

  • I'm curious... Assuming the devs allow the viewing of notes before trade/purchase, couldn't someone read a note and (presumably) write their own with the same contents? In that case, it'd be good if the bank had a verification of sorts.

Maybe the viewing of notes during trade only allows you to see the top half (with a serial number) but the bottom half shows a verification number that isn't present on the Google spreadsheet. Maybe? Seems like there's always a possibility of these notes being forged.

I like the idea though. I saw one of these notes just before the game ended and picked it up.
Posted 19 months ago by ss Subscriber! | Permalink
  • This is a rather interesting idea (then again, I'm a finance person so it's right up my alley).  The forging thing sounds like it could be an issue, unless they allow for some sort of unique identifier.  For example, every note must have a unique identifier on the server side -- otherwise it wouldn't know which note to display when the note is read.  So maybe that could be made visible?  Then you'd just need a table of IDs and forging would be significantly more difficult.

I'd be glad to help out with this if I could!

  • From what I just read in Eve forum ,the reason the guy was banned was not because he embezelled the so called virtual money from the bank.it was because he tried to sell for real world money in exchange for the Eve money.I welcolme folks like Clare and En for at least trying to make this game a more excitable and helpful in many ways to others. There will as in life be nae sayers and negatives but always in the end the truth will be shown one way or another.Good on you En and Clare for being special and I will help in any way to any to help to lighten the load for anyone new or old players.

  • @ghost777, Thanks! This should be a fun endeavor.

@Elian& The Plaid Hatter, the uniqueness of the note is in it's date and time stamp indicating when it was written (based on the Glitch Calendar). The date and time stamp is then associated to a unique id that is stored in a publicly viewable spreadsheet to check against. Unless we gain the ability to travel back in time in Glitch (which could be quite cool actually), the only way to change the date/time stamp is for the author of the note to edit it and even then, you can't choose what you want the date/time stamp to be, it will be based on whatever Glitch Time & Date it actually is. Hope that makes some sense, but I've probably just made it sound more confusing ;)

  • sounds like an interesting game-thingy!  I'm curious, though, if you've taken into account the limited life of notes.  has anybody worked out yet how long notes last before they go *poof*?  is it a fixed length of time, or by number of reads?
Posted 19 months ago by katlazam Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Ah, thanks En.  I haven't written a note yet (should probably get around to trying that...).  I was aware of there being a date stamp, but didn't notice the time stamp for some reason.  That definitely makes things easier.  I'm not too familiar with the issue of notes disappearing, but I would think that as long as they don't disappear while in someone's inventory or while in storage this shouldn't be too much of an issue.  Though the liabilities due to the principal of notes outstanding at any point in time would be uncertain.

  • Hi en:Im not understanding what the goal of the bank is - so you drop bank notes randomly inWorld, I find one and cash it in - so if I understand, I'm getting free-currants, correct?

And when you say your interested in creating an alternative currency - why would you want to do that? ie. what's your motive to do that?

And in time, the bank will deplete your supply of currants, what then?

And how will this be successful if the bank-notes are at random?

I'm not opposed to the idea, and I was very involved with another virtual world (not Eve) that had an inGame currency that could be redeemed for US dollars - but I'm just not getting what your vision is.

  • I love the idea and this is the kind of thing we'd like to see take off!

As for being able to read notes from the trade window: I just added it to a list, so someday it'll happen!

Currently, notes also "degrade" over time (I think after 20 reads?) so this would have to be worked around as well.
Posted 19 months ago by stoot barfield Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Grr... yes... notes do 'degrade', as I found out after reading (from my inventory) one of my more precious ones, only to find it go...: http://i.imgur.com/Dz2FJ.png

Love the idea! What determines the value of the note (denomination wise)?
Posted 19 months ago by Hburger Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Ah, degrading will be a problem. We may have to have a coin minting skill to pull this off!

MaherMan, en fronted the money to start this enterprise, and scattered the notes at first so that people would find them and get the idea. (And yes, those initial finders are getting free currants!)

All the notes are minted by en (so far), which simplifies things at least for the moment.

Also, they're not strictly an alternative currency, since the notes have a maturation date.

  • @stoot, Thanks for adding the ability to read notes from the trade window to "the list"!!

Regarding the note degradation, yes that will be a problem. puts a kink in the plan. We'll have to think about that one, unless the dev team wants to fix that :)

And for the all the questions about why, in short it's really just an experiment at the moment to see what this could become or how it will best work (iteration, iteration, iteration).

And to the dev team, I think notes are one of the more unique things about the game in that they are truly custom player created objects. I would love to see more custom player created objects and items and dynamics to support that. It opens up all kinds of new and interesting game play options and possibilities for players. I've heard/read (don't remember where) that one of the goals of Glitch is that it would be a player controlled and created world, and if that's the case, that would be incredible!

  • Seems like with a higher level of Penpersonship you should be able to make notes that don't degrade so quickly. They could let you level up into something like Printmaking (instead of Penpersonship II) then bank notes, magazines, newspapers all possible at that point and kind of skill would fit in nicely next to tinkering 3 and engineering 1 too  :0)
Posted 19 months ago by Criffin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think they don't degrade anymore as of this test (if that didn't make it in, it will for next test).

And, en, to your general comment re player created/controlled: we are working on it!

  • WIth full non-degrading notes, it will be interesting to see if liter will become a problem... and if it does, I am going to open a landfill!

  • @stoot, thanks for the update about notes and degradation. if notes don't degrade, that will be great news (thank you). i will test it out next test since i didn't get to play at all this last test (insert sad face here).
