Ur vs. Resource Routes?

With "resource routes" available now through users connecting their streets, my incentives to return to Ur seem to be dwindling -- and if we are soon able to have other resources, I wont even have to leave for eggs or jellisacs!

Is Ur being supplanted?! :o

I'm being mildly sarcastic, of course, but in all seriousness, I see people running the routes constantly, but I don't see a whole lot of traffic in Ur :/  Is this by design with the new housing system?

  • I for one have never used the routes and don't intend to. I will still go forth into UR because I enjoy wandering and discovering.

  • I am the same as Anne216. I never use the housing routes. I enjoy exploring ur too much, there is so much to see and you always come across something to smile at.

  • I generally wander Ur, unless I really need to stock up on something. Otherwise I find most of what I need around the public streets, and it's more fun for me. I've never done a whole route either I realised today, I get as much stuff as I need and leave.
I'm on the bubble route though, happy to help people stock up.

  • I wondered about that myself earlier as I marched down the spice route.

Granted, I found myself having little need to wander beyond Ix prior to the home routes. Part of it, I think, comes from getting to a higher level and running out of quests / badges / xp incentive.

However, the focus of being able to farm exactly what you want is very appealing. Especially if you have a limited time to play. I find myself using the home street routes more and more, only popping into Cebarkul to visit the trader. If selling to traders is phased out, as was mentioned in the big changes thread, I'm not sure how much of an incentive there will be to go anywhere.

  • I prefer to wander around Ur.
Did a route once but for now I think it's quite boring..

  • Wessels! You're on the route!

Also, outside of Cebarkul and Uncle Friendly I run into more glitchens on the routes than out in Ur.

Quite simply since going into beta the natural player decay is not being supplanted by baby glitchen. You see fewer glitchen because there ARE fewer glitchen to be seen!

Someone recently posted a deal from Alexa showing that we currently have about half as many players as we did during Beta the First. Half as many than we had even as recently as January.

  • I still like poking around Ur.. There are so many different things out there that you never notice.
I also found the home streets too crowded for my taste. Too much stuff, too many animals.

  • I'm still a daily wanderer, but I tend to keep to the bogs. I'll be off in search of dirt piles more often now. I think that once the new wild animals are introduced we'll all get out more, since we can't have them in our yards and they'll be essential for furniture crafting.

  • Some home streets are very ugly and cluttered, what with all the crap out in the yard.  What next - cars on blocks?

  • Walruz, they are cluttered and ugly.  But, at some point we're going to be able to expand those streets and make them unique.

My favorite sight, wandering off the beaten path of one of the resources routes?  A naked Glitch with bucked teeth making hooch in his front yard.  You don't need cars on blocks when you've got stuff like that going on!

  • I've never been on these routes. I've only been on my /home street once actually. I prefer Ur.

  • The resource routes I find quite excellent when you just want to harvest something particular.
Also, the Grand Circuit has potential to connect a lot of neat things:

That map I've been maintaining will hopefully be a helpful guide to find things to do with other players whom you may not otherwise talk to. It's also a nice visual aid to follow your path along the route, and will be getting a (minor) facelift once different housing themes are available, so the style of house/yard can be inferred from the house icon.

You can also start to see how things connect, since anyone who's on Grand and a Resource Route serves as a connection to a resource loop that, if followed around, will lead you back to Grand so you can continue to the next resource type if desired.

  • I like them both. It's a nice variety, and there are still plenty of folks out in Ur, in fact I rarely meet up with people on the routes. I guess I'm not hitting them at the right time.

  • Our new streets are also a part of Ur; in fact, I think of them as returning towards the original concept of Glitch, in a sense, where "you make the world." In the high-traffic regions, general consensus has reduced our customization and interaction down to tree replacement, and it takes about five minutes to find out how hotly that's contested. I look forward to being able to customize and expand my home street and my house and share it with my friends.

  • Love the loops...also love the public streets. I poke around everywhere. It is all good.

  • Since I finished all of my travel badges long ago, I actually love the discovery aspect of the routes. It makes it feel like I'm going new places again. It's really neat to see how every Glitch has a different interpretation of the same resources that everyone else has. Some streets are empty and serene, others a bustling with activity. You never know what you are going to find when you click the next name on the sign post.  I can't wait till we can start to sculpt our streets, then there will be no end to the discovery and imagination of our fellow Glitchen.
As far as the social aspect goes, since Ur is so empty these days, Global and other group chats are the best place to get your fix. And then, it doesn't matter where in Ur that you are... just that you are there!

  • Personally, I think many things are true at once:
If you're a resource-seeker/hoarder, and/or have limited time to play, resource routes are useful.
    I don't think they're an Ur-replacement; I think they're a supplement.
Also, we do not fully know how many resources will be enabled for our /homes. Or when those will be coming.
At the moment, I use the routes for special runs (on a given day, I chase one or two resources).
Or if I want to get into an ingot grinding binge.
But that still forces me out into the world to load up on Sparkly, Dullite, etc.
And now that Urth blocks are here (and supposedly important), that will force me into other regions to dig, um, erfs :).
Plus I'm still not done with travel badges.
The important thing is, I can play as the mood strikes me, however I wish.
/homes don't change this for me.

  • Even before the test homes were released, I didn't spend a lot of time wandering the streets.  There were spice and gas runs, but I knew where to find those so wasn't really wandering.  Bubbles and beans I had housing quarters that had been planted with one or the other, and I would start at 1100 and run to 5500.   Eggs required a bit of wandering but still not much as I know exactly where they are in the Groddles.

So new housing has changed my behavior slightly but has not changed how much time I spend in the streets of Ur.

I usually have a goal when I'm gathering.  Especially if I'm trying to gather a lot.  Making something like 4 bags of Rainbow Juice for a party requires a heck of a lot of bubbles, and  I'd rather quickly target the bubbles without needing to skip trees or streets.

  • I am really going to miss having housing being part of Ur in a real sense, like walking through different lands to get to someone's house, saying which subway stop you're near, seeing people coming and going out of houses and apartment buildings and neighborhoods. I like the new housing but it really does feel "offline" to me in the sense that it's not really "in the world" or "on the map" or whatever.

  • Aviatrix, this might be an idea worth putting in the ideas section.  Obviously, the "/home" command is a temporary arrangement, as it's definitely an typed override and not really part of the game itself.  It should, in the end, be something activated by using your mouse with something.

One way to do that might be to have anchor points in Ur, where people can choose to have their new housing streets attached.  The blocks might even remain in place, but be renamed something like "Tana Trample Culdisac".  But the problem with the blocks is that they are not automatically scale-able.  Every time the population outgrows the number of houses, the Devs have to add more by hand, and the directory sign can only hold so many.  And even a street full of signs would have it's limits.

I bet it is a problem they are working hard on, and if we can brainstorm a bunch of solutions to it, it might be well appreciated.

  • On the other hand, these streets are supposed to be in our own heads!  We're supposed to be imagining them up.  So maybe, each Glitch could be the entrance to their own street and house!  So, to get to my street, you'd have two ways of getting there:  Track me down on Ur and enter in through my ear (with my permission), or track down one of my friends (or a friend of a friend), and enter in through their street and use the Glitch Housing Circuit to make it to my place!

Ooooh...  I, personally, hope that this is exactly what is in the works.

  • I hardly use the routes at all, mostly because I love the scenery and variety of the original Ur. I hope that as the housing streets become more and more desirable, the devs will give us a motivator to venture out of them.

  • Oops double post.
Posted 9 months ago by Fernstream Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Fernstream, sloths and foxes.  And I bet they'll be just the beginning!

Also, there are already a number of quests that are location specific, or that take you through most of Ur, which works for beginners.  We forget those, because we've already completed them.
Posted 9 months ago by Carl Projectorinski Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I like both - I love going into the areas for spices and gas plants, but enjoy running the routes when I have the time to complete them.   Bubble trees are all over the place, so I haven't used a route for that yet; but probably will at least once, just to see what people have done with their houses as well :)
