Rooks vs. Giants

With rook attacks on the rise, rook fighters have started seeing attempts to thwart the attacks either by pushing a stun over 8 or rolling a 12-sided die to try and get a rook roll during an attack. I have even seen people going street to street rolling the die trying to summon rooks. Now I'm all up for a holy war of rooks v. giants but griefing the attacks just to grief them is well, for a lack of a better word, dickish, and really ruins the spirit of the game.

First off, I suggest making rook rolling and stun attack griefing come with a higher penalty. For example, make every roll of the die -10 energy. Die rollers can roll all they want but it will slowly drain them like stun attacks cost everyone who contribute energy and mood. Likewise, whomever clicks an attack over 8 to break the attack suffers an additional penalty because of the backlash. Nothing to really injure someone but enough to make it tougher to break attacks so people can't just take potshots at the defenders. If you're going to fight for the rooks, you're going to have to FIGHT for the rooks.

Secondly, I suggest giving the rookists something more constructive to do. Right now, the most rooks do is attack and rook animals. That's a really one-dimensional type of foe. I'd like to see the Rook church be a true anti-church sort of like the humans v. cylons in Battlestar Galactica. (Yes, I am a big BSG geek and I will take you all on. :P ) What if the rookists had hidden shrines and could donate to the rooks and also gain favor or had their own alternate history or at least could start deconstructing the world into unimagined nothingness? The regular Glitches will have street projects. The rookists could have unstreet projects or rookworld projects but make it harder than poisoning trees and replanting. That gets to be too much like "Duck season!! Rabbit season!!" The rookists will need to work together just as much if not harder than regular Glitches.

This also reminds me of the Ancient Egyptian belief that of trying to destroy someone by literally trying to erase every mention of them off the face of the Earth. Archaeologists have found pharaoh's names erased on tomb walls and ancient documents if the dynasty after them had taken over and literally wanted to remove all memory of them. So maybe there can be something where the rookists have to try and erase parts of the world to try and "erase" the giants.

Just some ideas. Bring on the rooks!!

  • Very interesting ideas! I like the over-8 penalty idea. I also love the idea of hidden/underground/counter-culture shrines.

  • I was too bored to read. (I'm not much of a Reader) But I can tell how you really worked hard, and this is pretty intresting. I have a question though--Where do Rooks come from?
I don't think I got anything based on that in the Rook Museum.

  • Gris, I like this post. I do think that there could be something for the rookists, aside from doing things that cause lag (like rolling during an attack on an already busy street? Browser crash, hoooooo). Interesting that you use BSG as a reference since in the end the humans and the cylons had to work together to save each other. Love it!
