The Legend of St. Faereluth (a true story)

'Twas the day before Recurse
And and in all the homes
Online Glitchen were working
And some writing pomes

As I left my house, to start my route rounds
I found Faereluth on my street - and barnacles on the ground
and eggs, and I thought "someone's bags are full"
Said "Good morning :)  " and dashed off to the next street down

my list, but I wondered, in the back of my head
What was really going on, on my home street and then
Faereluth IMed and greeted oblivious me
"Good morning to you, and Happy Recurse Eve"

"I'm visiting the streets of my Glitchen friends
on my list of who's online, every one, and then
Harvesting their resources, leaving all of it for them."

"How sweet!" I exclaimed." What a lovely idea!"
Sharing the love, the stuff, imagination and cheer.
A great way to mark the day, to Faereluth I did say
While quietly glad that my name starts with A

After travelling the loop I came back to my street
To find barnacles, jellisacs, eggs & some peat
All stacked on the Urth, and even more sweet
A bundle of grain tied up all nice & neat.

So if you enter the world on next Recurse Eve
You might find a Glitch dropping things at their feet
And not hoarding (not hoarding!) just giving and kind
I ask that you pause and please pay them some mind

And remember sweet Faereluth who first spent this day
Giving up time and energy to bring goodness your way
Or join in the fun spreading all this good cheer
And hope I write better poems by this time next year ;)

  • Awesome! Both the original kindness and the ode to it. Hope this becomes part of Ur lore!

  • Ah yes, I did the exact same thing a very long time ago, before the new housing system even went into testing. I filled up 15 slots with Shiny Objects and the last slot with a toolbox containing harvesting tools, then ran around Ur starting from my house in Meadow.

It was quite fun at first. I usually milked and squeezed with my mouse, which made it seem as if I was conjuring these resources out of thin air. Not having to care about sorting stuff in the inventory was also very liberating. There were a few kind passer-bys who tried to tell me my bag was full and I replied "I know!" and ran off.

It was fun until I met a rather clever low level player in Jeth. He saw what was happening, and decided it was easier to collect the stuff I drop than to harvest them himself. I decided I want to shake him off, because a) I'd rather the resources be taken by many rather than one and b) he was making me feel me feel slightly uncomfortable by following so closely behind. So I ran, first through a hyperspace door, then by teleporting several times. He's persistent, I'll give you that. He eventually caught up with me 20 minutes later, having added me to his contact list so he can stalk me. I gave up soon after that, headed home and replaced the Shinies with my usual bag setup.

I never confronted him. He didn't do anything wrong, technically speaking, and I didn't want to create a scene. It was fun while it lasted. So there you go, tl;dr: Have fun if you want to do this, but beware of stalkers.

I found another Glitch spreading Recurse joy all over my home street. I'm declaring it a thing.

  • Lovely poem, Aleph!! And how delightful to just leave the harvested goods behind and/or come home to a harvest already picked!
