I used to LOVE mining in Neva Neva...

Now first up, apologies for what follows as I'm really NOT a whingebag, I promise..BUT this really wound me up.
As a weekend treat, I decided to be naughty and buy a key from auction so that I could earn some sparkly with which to appease Humbaba <chuckle> I love mining, and Neva Neva has been tons of fun for me in the past and enabled me to meet some great people and make new Glitch chums.  What could be nicer?
Unfortunately, it seems since my last joyful expedition in the mines there, a LOT of things have changed...and not necessarily in a good way. Once I got my key I waited outside for a few people and encouraged them to follow me in (it's nice to help each other out isn't it?) but to be honest if I'd known what it was going to be like in there I wouldn't have bothered going in the first place.
Whilst I appreciate that it's nice to have systems that help each other out in game, what I don't like is being told what to do. Helping each other in the caves is a courtesy, NOT a right. And it was a real shock when I walked in to Neva Neva earlier to find an individual shouting at everyone in what can only be described as aggressive tones; "OMG Can't you WAIT?!" being the most oft repeated phrase, some being more impolite.  I know of at least one fellow Glitchen who was so confused by the orders being barked at her that she left the cave.
Now, I don't mind waiting at a lump of sparkly rock for others to join me at all, but what I do mind is being told HOW to play the game by anyone other than a Tiny Speck employee. I like to think that I conduct myself in a way that is agreeable to those around me,having done my fair share of calling out to players in the past when a nice chunk of sparkly has appeared.. but being told how, when and what to do in a cavern that I've visited countless times before and had a ruddy wonderful time in is a bit much.
Don't get me wrong; I understand where people feel that a system can be useful because it benefits the most glitches, BUT I do find it offensive when someone decides that they're in charge and starts to publicly berate others who don't follow their rules. That's just not on. I was sat at my keyboard wincing for the poor souls who dared to put a foot wrong!
One of the reasons I love Glitch so much is that it isn't (nor should it be) a game about ego, or who can mine the most; it's a game all about enjoying yourself and taking it at your own pace.
Like I said I don't mind systems necessarily, and if they're fair to all I'm more than happy to follow them, but what I do object to are other Glitchens  telling people off just because they choose NOT to play the game the way that they have decided that it should be played.. That's embarrassing for the people concerned, and disrespectful, to say the least.
(Oh and as a final aside, I tell you what else was interesting to me.  Glitchens were only 'allowed' to start mining chunks of sparkly once this individual had started first..now correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the first one to mine a rock reap more rewards? If that's the case, it's a corking system for individual concerned, and no wonder they were so insistent that it was followed...)
What do you think guys?
Do you as a player appreciate systems and abide by their rules, or do you feel that the game should be played the way the individual sees fit?
It should be noted, I had a ruddy wonderful time when this person left..everyone meandered around at their own pace, shared Earthshakers and had a much more enjoyable experience.

=^..^=

(A thought: It would be nice to see the names of people in caves such as this before you entered, that would prevent encounters with ego-trippers..)

  • What's so special about Neva Neva? I read about the plot to fill it and Ajaya Bliss with butterflies (for reasons I still don't understand) but when I got there and saw it required a key I didn't have & didn't feel like buying, I especially don't get it. Sparkly rocks exist elsewhere in the world, don't they? People seem to get pretty passionate about that place, though.

I used to avoid any kind of MMO, because I've always been paranoid of making a fool of myself for not understanding the social rules in some strange new world. (Once I tried playing Smash Bros with some new people and got chewed out for not following their "rule" to use a taunt before throwing punches when the match started.) Even now I generally keep to myself when playing because that's just how I roll, but I have had only positive experiences with other Glitchen the few times I have engaged with them.

  • HHH: It and Ajaya are essentially giant sparkly factories, making them intensely popular.

  • Oh wow. Sounds like that system was simply being run by an asshole.

The systems can be nice (I've taken part in some awesome ones with awesome Glitches all around), and I'm all for friendly cooperation, but they were just trying to take advantage, it sounds like. It's one thing to ask politely for people to wait at a rock until more people can join them, but completely another to demand to be first to start the rock and then berate people who don't follow the "rules".

I'd totally have been doin the opposite of the person's wishes once I perceived them to not be doing things in the spirit of the community cooperation.

    ETA:

HHH, butterflies were getting in the way of mining. They'd come up as the first selection in the list when you hit enter, and in places like Neva Neva and AB, there are 20 people mining a rock at once, therefore you usually only have one hit, and accidentally choosing a butterfly would mean you would get no hits. So that's why people were in arrears over that.

As far as the draw of the two places, there's often a lot of cooperation between those 20 people, so you get a lot of extra rock for less energy. And when the people are nice, it can be a really fun atmosphere.

And that's all I have to say on those two subjects as I'm generally solitary as well and neither issue affects me often.

  • HHH: I agree, that's why I feel so anxious about interacting with others in MMOs or even in new places IRL. The idea of violating these unknown, unspoken social rules is frightening to me.

However, in a case like this, I would have just kept mining sparkly regardless of the "rule." I'm here to get sparklies. Some random douchebag can't throw me out for that. In fact, I probably would have tried as hard as possible to bother this entitled miner, because two can play at the douchebag game.

  • It's full of pigs actually-there weren't any the last time I visited, but they've been put on the platforms in the middle. As far as I know, Sparklies don't rez there so it's no biggy, but I didn't know there was a 'plot' to fill it with livestock, which strikes me as a tad ridiculous.
I spent two days mining there a few weeks ago so I could gain enough dosh to buy a big house, and I made some awesome friends there. It was so amicable; a genuinely brilliant atmosphere with people laughing, joking, helping each other out and sharing goodies.  It was precisely what the game should be about...
It's sad but it seems that it's just like real life in that there are always a few who decide that it needs to be different, and set about making changes that ultimately spoil the experience.

  • I went to the secret caves once but only for the completest badges, "neva neva" again!
I found it quite boring.  I think mining would be more efficient if a group just went from cave to cave mining together.  There was way too much time spent hopping around in the crowded secret mines.  I think I was kinda lucky though when I went i didn't see much negativity although I suspect its there as many posts show.  Good luck to those of you who like it.

  • Effigy: You're spot on in that I really felt wound up to the extent that it made me not want to co-operate..that said, I took a deep breath and blocked the individual concerned.  It was a relief when they left; leaving some very nice people in there to enjoy themselves..

Little Miss Giggles: You said it, the person concerned was indeed a derrier :)

HHH (and everyone else) It's a shame that we feel that we feel we can't interact fully because of unspoken rules that fellow players put in place. It's something that we have to nip in the bud early days I guess, before these self-imposed rules become the norm.

  • Totally agree - though the most enjoyable experience in Neva Neva I had was being in there on my own for an hour when everyone else was busy growing pumpkins and catching fire flies xD

Although bad attitudes are not confined to the sparkly caves... one fellow glitch would repeatedly splank me if I didn't leave her to mine 'her' rock on her own. Of course that just made me do it more xD

  • I like getting splanked, so that would probably be counterproductive for such individuals... :p

But yeah, ignore the jerks, do your own thing.  It's great if you try and be polite and courteous, but that doesn't mean you have to be a doormat.  I would suggest just playing the game, doing as little harm to others as possible, and enjoying yourself.

  • I don't do the high traffic mines anymore and have developed a number of locations that are much less traveled - it's the road less traveled that offers large sparkly bounty.

  • I'm so glad you brought this up. You are not the only one thinking this. I was in Neva Neva yesterday and the day before.
Notes were everywhere telling everyone what was called what. This is a ledge, this is a platform, etc etc. The notes were very rude, IMO. All the sudden I found if we called out ledge and it wasn't a ledge the person would flip their lid. OMG who cares? It's just freaking pixel sparkly!!!!

The control factor in that room was too much for me and I decided to leave and not return. I get more sparkly outside of that room than in it.

  • I think of myself as a regular in neva. I tend to mine there for at least a little while every day. Though I've never seen it myself, I have no doubt that there is the occasional jerk that shows up. The calling system is great for people who want to cooperate, but there's definitely no need to be overbearing about it. There's a nice party atmosphere when you get a good group, so even though I can personally get more sparkly by circling through the mines, it's a lot of fun to hang out and be social and get some sparkly while I'm at it. I would happily report anyone who was acting as described in the OP.

  • All of the locked sparkly streets are interesting experiences that I recommend doing at least once. That being said, there's an intensity to the entire operation that bugs me. Never mind the other issues with it (it's hours of grinding, IRL and in-game, it's a bit elitist, and yes, you get seriously bossy people with a self-righteous attitude vastly disproportionate to the game being played).

I loved neva neva when it was a handful of people helping each other out (jumping around to different spots of the cave, shouting out where it was). There was no requirement to be in a certain place at a certain time, it was first come first serve, and overall it was a pretty chill atmosphere. You might not get the maximum number of sparkly out of every single rock, but then, no one else did either. It was FAIR.

Even then, the repetition of it (despite hilarious chat conversations) got to me, and I couldn't stay too long without feeling claustrophobic and moving on - nature of the cave, not the people in it. It sounds like it's pretty horrific now with this kind of crap going on.

My opinion? Let 'em have it. If a few asshats get distracted by shiny stuff and obsessively mine in only those areas, let them think they're special. There are SO many other ways to make money and have fun in this game. Little tyrants rule over little empires.

I find and mine way more sparkly (and have more fun doing so) outside of AB and Neva neva than I ever did inside it, and I don't ever feel like I can't leave an area because it's hard to get back to.

  • I think Neva Neva and Ajaya could have worked in this game if the "No Glitch Left Behind" rules had never been applied.I didnt work in American Schools and it don't work in our caves!!

What I mean by that is way back in Beta when more expierienced miners were getting higher yield and faster mine times THAT WAS FAIR If you studied mining for a bazillion hours you should get the most yield! Now in Neva and Ajaya whoever gets there first gets the most yield whether or not they have Mining IV or not. What sense is that?!But because a few glitch whined about not being able to mine quickly because they chose other studies. That makes no sense- I dont complain that a Doctor gets to make millions of dollars performing surgeries and I cant because I studied accounting...the doctor still has to pay me to do his taxes but still I WANT TO DO SURGERY! -That makes no sense!

I understand that the way they have co-op mining allows for more community but when I wait 10 minutes in one spot for a key or pay a buttload of cash for the key I think that idea should go OUT THE WINDOW , Tiny Speck!!!

  • I ran into something similar the other day.  I simply told the person barking out orders that I didn't see the point in waiting, it wasn't netting me more sparkly, and when I've just had an earthshaker, I'm not going to sit and wait for stragglers to show up before I start mining.  They shut up after that, the mood became more relaxed, and I personally had more fun.

Another time, someone came in and said "Look at you fools all jumping around like idiots, lol, why isn't there a train going?" and proceeded to tell us with great authority  that following one glitch around so we could all mine the same rock at the same time was far better than calling out the rocks when you see them.  It wasn't so much that their idea was not sound, but more the way they presented themselves rudely, and then utterly failed at the execution of this idea, that made us all stop following them after about two rocks.

The systems that people use in Neva Neva don't really work for any glitch with level 4 mining.  Where I used to get bonuses of up to 30 or so when everyone mined together, the bonus chunks for level 4 miners never seem to go above maybe 7.

  • I was in Neva Neva for the first time the other day, and I quite liked the notes because they helped me understand where the rocks were when people were calling them out.

  • The reason I liked Ajaya in Beta was the nice social atmosphere. People were fun and chatty and shared stuff.

Now...it's a little too crazed and obnoxious in there for me.   There's sparkly in other places, lots of it.  I stay out of the sparkly caves.

That doesn't mean I don't miss the hugely social aspect of them. I wish we had some other thing (and i have no idea what "thing" that could be) in game that had a similar social interactive level.

  • I completely agree with Kitty - i had the same experience when i stumbled on a key for Ajaya Bliss.  (Some) miners seem to be a bit mad and fixated on their patterns - frankly they need a bit more sunshine.  I do think the game favors the miners too much - you get XP for mining (why do you keep getting XP for hitting rock????) plus you get a product that sells for a pretty high price AND you get the chance of a bonus gift in the form of a gem - that is also worth a lot.
More focus on the animal and growing items and balance things out - but hey, im sure this has been said a billion tims before.

  • you know, i used to love mining ajaya.

i have mining 4 and i have learned that i get a LOT more profit with my AK and gardening than anything in the mines. it actually pays me to guanotap and while i'm there break a few rocks.

i keep being tempted to want to break up the way ajaya and neva get mined these days by just mining it the way i like (chaotically), but i realize that while all of what i'm politely calling THOSE people are slogging away behind locked doors, they are not out on the streets where they'd ruin the atmosphere.

    win/win.

  • Thing with Neva Neva, and Ajaya Bliss is, nothing is sit in stone.
There is no rule to wait or what have you.
But over time the people that go there ended up making some sort of silent pact of waiting.
I usually mine there because I like the social aspect of it, given it is a nice break from solo mining around the Callopee and other sparkly filled areas.

But, you got to realize that waiting is like tipping a waitress.
It's a courtesy, but I don't have to do it.

Yeah you'd get more sparkly if you wait for others, but generally if you have one of the more high mining skills, say 4.
Because of you're the last to the rock, given everyone has waited for you, and you have say, mining 2, and everyone else has mining 3 or 4. You're not getting that lovely 30+ rock bonus.
Because everyone is going to be done, and not be able to help you.
If you finish first, you get more.

People often just think if everyone waits, everyone gets more. This isn't true. Only 1/4 of the people on the rock will get a bonus, those slower won't.

I'll wait for people, but I only wait for 9/10 of the population. I'm not going to wait for some guy who is trying to triple jump everything, or keeps falling off the ladder.

  • I've visited AB and Neva Neva a few times each, and so far the atmosphere in NN has been much better.  If I had found a caller claiming the right to go first every time I'd simply have ignored them.

Does mining in a train mean that the same player always gets the best bonuses for being in front?

  • haha - that was exactly what I was being told yesterday, Volkov, everyone was to wait for EVERYONE, including that one glitch who was chatting, and then fell off the stairs on the way up - who then has a chance to hit the rock first!  Which is absurd.  Personally I wait for some company, because otherwise I can do better mining outside all alone - but it's not the end of the world for some glitches to miss a rock.  Encourages them to practice jumping those tall steps.  ;)

  • You don't get more if you wait so much that others start mining before you do.

That's why I prefer AB, it's smaller, and there's usually more people, so more chances of people getting to the rock in time once it's been called out, even if the first couple of glitches that arrived didn't call it out.

  • Well I said this once and I will say it again. I think the giants should catch the flu and have sneezing fits where they cause an earthquake, collapsing and burying those mines right up to never be in existence again. This is just ONE thread of several that has opened up about just two areas in the game, AB and Neva Neva. It is sad when you get in those places that you have coordination bosses and notes on the "correct" mining procedures for "cooperative mining". If one so chooses to not abide by those player-made rules/tips a fellow player faces abuse. I find it sad that some so choose to self-appoint themselves as a boss in a game area, leaving notes, and barking orders.

Now I am sure there are a few that are fun and very nice people in the game that try to make these areas fun and try to be patient with new players learning the peer pressure related rules of those areas but really is it worth it other than the "social" aspect of said areas? As the game gets more popular and more players go in to mine those areas you are going to see more dictatorship. I see it a problem that will never get resolved until those mines are just gotten rid of.

I promise there are more threads coming with Neva Neva and AB as the topic in the future.. it is the nature of the beast with those areas sadly.

  • It's really quite rude that people do that, especially when Glitch is not a game about becoming level 40858229848586 and knowing all of the skills (in this case, all the way up to Mining 5). It's said above, but I'm gonna restate it: Glitch is about going at your own pace, not comparing yourself to others. And yeah, while you might occasionally feel jealous of that level 49 person, that doesn't mean that you are any worse than him.

And those people that think they're so high and mighty? Just leave them be. Everyone keeps saying that, and I have to agree.
Someone above said that if they're bitchy in the rooms, leave them in the rooms. At least they wont be outside in the streets bugging the crap (or in Glitch's case, the beans) out of everyone.

But I do agree, it is extremely rude to have people like that thinking they're so high and mighty (I mean, you don't see THEIR names on the list of Giants, do you?). In Beta, Glitch was just one big happy family. I know everyone feared in their hearts that people like this would come and ruin it all, and it appears that some have, but at least they're doing it in remote areas where only a few people visit. If they're locking themselves in the rooms, let them. They wont bug the rest of the Glitch population.

I feel that it slows down the game and slows down my own pace of playing. I like starting to mine right after I get to a rock. It's a fun. In AB people are more 'active'. They don't wait, they just call out. And you have to be quick and get to the rock. Some people may think it's a scramble, but I don't feel that way. To me the atmosphere there is lively and it makes me want to stay there for long.

  • I have to admit, the times I've felt the most frustrated, misunderstood, and unhappy in this game have been in Neva Neva. Then again, that's also where I've laughed the hardest and had the most fun. I have a love/hate relationship with the place.

I do support the idea and general practices of cooperative group mining (i.e., calling out rocks and waiting for most or all people to get there before beginning to mine, so that everyone has the same chance at those biggest bonuses), and I've always been under the impression that both Ajaya Bliss and Neva Neva were designed expressly to encourage this sort of teamwork and camaraderie among players. My experience is with Neva Neva (rather than Ajaya Bliss), and when I go there, I know that's the customary way to mine so it doesn't seem like a hardship to adjust my personal mining style accordingly.

I always find it strange to realize how many people so vehemently hate the very concept of cooperative mining and feel such animosity towards those of us who sometimes enjoy it. At the same time, I think it sucks that some co-op people react so aggressively and rudely to (for example) newer players who go into Neva Neva and just start mining in the usual, non-co-op way. I guess no matter what camp you're in, there will always be people who behave in inappropriate and extreme ways.

  • Yeah, Neva Neva seems to have become a place for petty dictators.  While I don't mind cooperating, and being nicely told the rules other people are following, being yelled at "not to call out beryl" when stumbling in for the first time is off-putting.

Hint: there are other "mining party areas" where people are more cooperative and less dictatorial.  You will find them if you travel around and keep an eye out for engaging conversations of people cooperating.

  • I love this game, but the only time I've ever felt put off to the point that I actually logged out and left was in Neva Neva -- I actually had a player attempting to shame me by name for not waiting LONG ENOUGH for every single person to get there.

It was especially rich that they were lecturing me, because THEY were the ones getting the big bonuses -- I explained very nicely that I have a disability that causes issues with my hands, so I don't have the world's best reaction time . . . so if they all start mining, by the time I can click, the rock is gone.

I was happy to wait until several people had gathered around the rock, but the attitude that the game MUST be played THEIR way (which coincidentally happens to benefit them at the expense of other players) was incredibly offputting.

Needless to say, I'm not in a hurry to go back -- I have a key that I found, but I may wind up selling it at auction rather than dealing with that kind of attitude again.

I love the cooperative aspects of Glitch, and I'm always doing Radiate or Random Kindness or giving out food or drinks . . . but being shamed and called out by name for not perfectly following someone else's made-up mining system was the worst experience I've had in this game so far, particularly since a polite explanation mentioning a disability was completely blown-off.  I couldn't believe the rudeness there :(

  • I have mixed feelings about this.  On the one hand, if someone is being rude and bossy, I probably won't listen.  On the other hand, I disagree with the glitch from a few posts back who believes it only benefits a few -- I believe these systems of mining in crowded, popular areas are quite utilitarian and benefit the most possible.  Whereas ignoring the systems and not cooperating is just selfish and benefits only the person ignoring the system.

Ultimately, here's the deal.  I don't like those systems either, not with that many people around.  But rather than antagonize the players that are using the system, making the whole system useless, I just go elsewhere.  It's easy enough to mine solo -- it just requires wandering.  I also have a street where I mine cooperatively, but we never yell or bully those that pass through that do not (at least, not in my experience).  Instead, we go about our system, calling out the rock and waiting on our friends, and I've found that as a result, many players pick up the system voluntarily.  Or they move on.

In any social situation, from an online game to the local counter restaurant, unwritten social etiquette rules come about.  I think both sides of the issue need some patience and understanding:  these rules are generally not obvious, so one cannot expect everyone to automatically know them.  While no one can force those that newly discover the rules to follow them, if you do not like the conventions that have evolved in an area, it is much better to move along than to actively antagonize the social structure.

  • I mine cooperatively in other areas, where players have been polite and non-demanding -- I'm generally a solo miner, but I'm happy to call out rocks in areas where Glitches are being friendly and helpful.  I've made new friends that way, and I enjoy returning to those areas and periodically running into familiar faces and handing out Random Kindnesses.

I was just really put off by the attitude in Neva Neva, and I really hope that it doesn't spread to other areas of the game.

It really came down to the idea of "We have a system, and if you play differently, you're CHEATING!" . . . when the game isn't set up that way at all, and it's a self-imposed system that doesn't actually benefit everyone playing, just the first few people who are fastest on the mouse-click.
