Subscription Question

I know that previously this question was up in the air and Stoot hadn't made up his mind on it, so I'll ask again since my sub expires near the end of this month.

When I renew, will I be able to get the special price that I signed up for during the beta special?  I bought the Moly Sub at $89, and I was wondering if I will get the same price, or if it will go up to the $140ish a year or whatever.

If it goes up, and I don't get the original price, I may have to switch to a non yearly plan.  Since I can't see the plans since I am still subbed, and I forget what they were, I'll have to check it out when I'm expired.  It would be nice to be able to see and renew the plans ahead of time!

  • Whoa I just posted the exact same question a few moments ago! ( Look at me not paying attention to the forums D: ) I'm with you though on the whole wishing I could renew before it expires and what kind of prices I'll be looking at this time around. I really don't want things to change (like my Glitch's appearance and a few of the Subscriber Free items I have). I need info O_O

  • Until TS posts something, here is a screen shot of the monthly plans/prices as they now appear:

    prntscr.com/fmei9

    and Yearly rates:

    Tin: $49.88
    Copper: $87.88
    Molybdenum: $144.88

Remember, "All credits you get from stipends received during the beta period will be doubled once Glitch (re)launches (i.e., if you currently get 150 credits each month and subscribe for three months during beta, you'll receive 450 bonus credits after we launch)."

So if you need to go month-to month, even on a Copper subscription you'll have some credits to play with until you run out of your beta bonus credits.

  • So there's no way to stay grandfathered in at that price? In order to continue to subscribe, we have to pay 75% more than last year?
Posted 86 days ago by Bashere Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It was a special deal before the first launch, and never intended to be available a year after it was offered; they clearly said that it was a one time offer. This is a different beta, and if they are going to do any specials on subscriptions for this beta, then they'll likely do it shortly before the next launch.

  • Though I understand why TS may not want to do this, I am a big fan of grandfathering in loyal customers.  I have been a member of eMusic for 7 years and thus pay the same price for an annual membership as I did in 2005.  If I were to cancel and resubscribe, the price would go up to what new members pay today -- which, ironically, has made me much more likely to keep renewing rather than falling off the wagon with the intention of maybe renewing "some day".  I like feeling valued as a longtime customer.  Even the big telecoms, who are not known for kindness or generosity, tend to let people hang on to old plans, often for years and years -- you can't go back to those old plans if you leave, but you can hang on to them for as long as you're willing to stay.  Think of it as being the Old Style Tree Poison of running a business.  :)

As I said, TS may not want to go this route and that's their prerogative.  I'll probably resubscribe in either case.  But I have to admit, I'm feeling a lot of anxiety about the upcoming end of my subscription.  This is partially because the subscription page is STILL broken (!!), which makes me feel like I'm in a kind of limbo.  When I was flush with cash and excited about the possibility of ponying up a couple of months ago, I wasn't able to -- the website literally would not let me extend -- and then later, when the cash passed, the excitement looked like it might follow.  There has to be a better way.

  • stoot barfield - I thought that I had asked once before somewhere if we were going to be grandfathered into that price, as Bashere had mentioned.  I believe that you hadn't made up your mind at that time, but as I've told you before, I have a shitty memory. :P  I have no idea what thread it was in, but I'm sure that it wasn't one that I started.

I would really like to keep my 1 year Moly sub, and I also like the whole grandfathered in thing.  I know that you need to make money and all of that, but I've also been buying some credits here and there recently with all of the new stuff that's been coming out, like I'm sure a lot of other people have.

Hopefully you are making a decent profit on the game, though as I mentioned on that "one thread", I don't think that you are making this game to get mass loads of cash, I think it's more of a personal experiment and that you are a nice person that likes to see people happy. :)

Little Miss Giggles - I don't remember where it said that it was a one time thing, though I do remember asking about what would happen if we would resub, asking if it were possible to get that price again.  I liked the idea of possibly locking in a good price like that.

Though I will say that when I joined the original beta during the last week of it, I believe that it only took me 2 or 3 days to realize that I would be playing this game for a LONG time, so that is why I bought the yearly sub, the special price really helped me at the time, as I am on a fixed income.  But I know that I would love to sub for another year, though nowadays $140 in one plop with more bills coming my way is a little feh.

I know that there are other subs for 1 month and 3 months, but would it be impossible to get the moly sub for perhaps 3 payments?  I know that other people out there would be willing to plop down about $47 a month in 3 payments in order to do this.  I'm just on a fixed income being disabled, but I know that there are other people out there with families, and even some college students and other younger (but not too young!) kids out there that would appreciate being able to have the moly sub, but with a more manageable payment plan.

    You keep everything you've bought.

  • @Celticlady- The OP seems to discuss a different issue from what you have brought up.

"I hear we will lose all our subscription items that we bought while we were subscribers if we "Do Not" buy a new subscription. Does this mean furniture upgrades, cloths, avatar vanity and wardrobe and the size of our home streets/towers and so on?"

    - As shhexy has said, When a subscription lapses, you lose the sub only free items, which afaik applies to the "free for subscriber" items in the wardrobe. Additionally, there is a grace period where those objects are not removed which is really nice of TS. After a week, if you do not resub, only the "free subscriber" options disappear from your wardrobe. You keep what you paid for with credits.

    - In vanity, you can keep the subscriber options until you change, and then you can't go back until you resubscribe. Same goes for house, street and tower designs.

    - Sub only free furniture upgrades are sticky. They don't change whether or not you have or change a subscription.

The size of your street or house has nothing to do with being a subscriber.

"we won't have a bunch of moving boxes again that explode all over and no storage for any of the items" I am not sure what this has to do with being a subscriber. Do you mean you will lose your house or shelves? I don't think so.

"Stoot, you are truly very vague on these issues and seems a tad greedy"
Staff have always been clear on these issues you have brought up. I also consider Stoot to be the antithesis of greed.

"We have worked our ass's off for TS. We have worn out keyboards, crashed computers and not to mention the physical/mental toll on some of us. Dead rear, cold asleep fingers, swollen ankles but above all we have been the most faithful bunch of Alfa/Beta testers you will find. Seriously, this is our reward?"

Glitch is a game meant to be enjoyed. So enjoy it. TS are wonderful people :)

(Sorry for hijacking your thread Serra.)

  • Times are tight and finances are tough all around. If we had been offered a multi-year show-of-faith rate last fall, I would have jumped on it. But now I have the same stress as everyone else, wondering how I am going to juggle the renewal after our specials run out.

So I make coffee at home for my commute instead of stopping on the way a few times a month. There's my $14.99 a month. I am giving up a TON of concerts this fall and winter. There's $144 right there on one ticket plus fees. Yeah, this is entertainment. Yeah, it costs money. But after a tough day at work, I get a few hours of goofy fun with virtual friends from all over the planet with no cheesy ads and no high-pressure sales tactics. TS is growing the game, we are growing the game too.

(AND GREAT TENTACLED GIANTS! Imagine what this place would be like if we had to cough up a gigantic "gym membership fee" to play. Yep. Content the way it is.)

  • Well, one thing that will make a difference is when they launch. If they launch in a couple of  months time, then you will get a year's worth of credits (assuming you had a sub).  At that point, you can get a tin sub and (if you can exercise some restraint) have a second year of moly for less than you paid the first time.

Or, if you can live without subscriber-only items, don't buy a sub and have a year's worth of credits for nothing.

What you could do at this point, if paying for a moly sub is difficult in one lump sum, but you definitely "need" one,  save a few bucks every month, so that when you run out of credits, paying for it will be easier.

Of course, if they don't launch for another year and keep releasing stuff that you want to buy, that's another story.  I suggest you buy what you can afford. That's generally a good principle to live by
Posted 85 days ago by shhexy corin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I always understood last year's price to be a one-time deal and fully expected to pay more this time 'round.

It's not easy for everyone to afford. I get that. It sucks. An installment-based payment plan would be a fabulous thing to help loyal players spread out the financial burden.

I'm so glad, though, that we're playing a game in which the stuff we pay for doesn't affect our gameplay. It's sure nicer to be able to afford the cool and pretty things, but even without them, we can still undertake the same tasks, interact, and explore. I love that.

The thing I'm struggling with is whether I should feel that TS owes me, somehow. This is more of a personal question for myself. I have a hard time asserting myself or laying claim to things that are my due, and I hadn't even pondered the thought of grandfathering. I paid for the sub, I lived through many of the frustrations we all did, I got stressed and upset sometimes (and yeah...I cried when I got home from a killer day at work and my moving boxes exploded all over my house in game)...but I've found such joy here too. Maybe I'm a naiive, altruistic fool, but that joy alone has meant so much to me.
It'd be great if there was a way to grandfather...but I'll be forking out for a sub regardless. I'm lucky that I have the means to do so without much thought. I wish I could spot all of you guys. If I could, I would.

    Aw. Bless you.

I don't think they owe me.  Not for playing this game, anyway.  There's other stuff I can't mention.

    Oh... the other stuff...

  • I bought my Moly Sub the day they came out with no hesitation. Because it was a very good deal. We got stipend credits and we got double credits.. so, do I feel like we should get "Grandfathered" or any more bonuses, NO I do not. I think TS has been very generous!

That being said. My Sub is up at the end of this month.. I'm hot to jump back on it.. I don't know yet? I feel like I'm close to the end of my (personal) game play. When I play, I like to feel the sense of accomplishment, a goal.  Achievements do that for me, but I'm nearing the end of them. Street projects were the best. I could do them all day (and I did), but they're a thing of the past.

I have never given a critique of Glitch, or really voiced out on any of the changes because "we're still in Alpha/Beta/Beta's Beta" (kinda like you shouldn't review a movie you haven't watched to the end). But, I feel like now is the time to voice some of my thoughts - as stated, I miss street projects! The new housing is cool. But, I miss ye olde tree house and the sense of a grounded neighborhood (I wish you had a choice, but I know that would F-up the system). I miss a lot of the subtle things that are no longer around, strawberries as a crop.

So to the powers that be.. I sit, wait, and hope that you're planing on some new kind of "hook". An interactive/community activity for us to take part in. Something to pull me back in and make me want to reach for my credit card as quickly as I did the day the subscriptions were activated.

ETA: I just renewed my Sub, thanks!

  • My "renewal rate" is almost $110 a year. My rate last year was only $70. That's an increase of $40 to keep the same service I subscribed to last year.

Without some sort of "grandfathered" pricing structure, I doubt I am going to re-subscribe for an additional $40 over what I'm paying now.

So instead of getting another $70 from me, you'll be getting $0. Not trying to be harsh or anything, it's just a little too expensive for me right now. :(
Posted 82 days ago by Bashere Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I used to own a shop and happily bought last year the 12 month molybdenum without a thought.
It runs out in a weeks time, and now I'm without a job and the kids pay my rent (shameful, yes, but another story), and no way can I consider spending the little I gain from my geeky crochet stuff I sell on Etsy for extras.
So I was sad, but then I thought about this:
All credits you get from stipends received during the beta period will be doubled once Glitch (re)launches
So I realized that when the game relaunches, I WON'T be short on credits, only on sub items, so if things pick up a little I could try for the minimum monthly sub to get access to the items and just have to be very careful on spending my stash of credits.
So now I have a smile again - could have been worse :)

  • As someone who is about to celebrate their real world year Glitchversary and who started playing a week after ya'll got the special beta price for a year, gotta say I'd be pretty jacked if there was some sort of grandfathering at this point. OK so i missed the sale last year by a couple of days--doesn't mean that, after a year, I should still be paying more upon renewal (nor does it appear that it's going to be an issue). My 2 cents.
Posted 82 days ago by Soupie♨ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • We got a special deal last year.  We get another special deal this year.  It is more expensive than last year, but still significantly less than players who join today will pay (plus all those stored up credit bonuses that will be coming).   The logic that we should continue to pay $70 (or whatever it was) is like saying that I bought chicken on sale last week, so I should have that lower price guaranteed for the rest of my life.   Promotional prices are designed to boost sales for a specific period of time, not lock the supplier into a lifetime commitment.  Sorry folks who are complaining, that is just not the way things work anywhere.  Would you be willing to work at the same job for the same salary for 30 years?  I didn't think so.

I already hit that button and renewed by moly subscription even though I have thousands of unused credits in my account.  That is not why I bought a membership.  Glitch is.  And Glitch is at least twice as awesome as it was last year.

  • Got my email! If I renew my copper subscription now for a year, (with the discount) it is only about $5.50 a month. If I decide to go monthly it is $8.99. So for under $10 a month I can play an unlimited amount of time during that month and enjoy some fun and friends. If I were to call a friend up and suggest going out it would be well over that $10 regardless of whether it was breakfast at the local diner, or a movie, Shopping at the mall, or even just coffee at Starbucks. I think it's totally worth it to renew for a year.

  • Question: I don't have the money for a Moly subscription, so I'm letting it run out in order to buy a cheaper option. Will I still be getting a discount? Because I'm not sure if I can afford a Copper if I don't.

  • Got my email as well!
It states that if you should upgrade your subscription before you renew (if upgrading is something you want to do).  The link takes you to a cool upgrade site.. but doesn't actually allow upgrades.  I sent in a help case, so we'll see what steps one in my position is to take :)

*note... help page does indicate if you are monthly you are supposed to cancel your sub and then buy upgraded sub.... but i don't think that applies in this particular case.

  • That's interesting; if I renew my copper subscription for a full year, it's $7.32 a month.  So the old-beta players (cf the figures a few posts up) , or those who were yearly compared to m2m, do have a pretty sweet deal compared to new players.

  • Am I correct in calculating that an annual Moly sub with the discount would be 108.66? (I currently have Copper.)

And if I were to renew my Copper now (my sub expires next week) but upgrade to Moly a little down the line when I'm more flush, would the upgrade be at the 25% off rate or full price?

    Thanks!

  • If we have saved looks that use a subscriber only wardrobe or vanity item, will we still have access to it should our subscription expire?

More of a hypothetical question as I plan to renew.

Also, getting the reminder email more than a week in advance of the renewal date would work better for people like me that get paid twice a month.  How about a two week email instead?

Yep. Same goes for any a la carte credit purchases. (Except it is not credits to "spent", but credits you bought — I assume that's what you meant.)

  • Sheepy: Yes, $108.66 would be the price. And, currently, if you renew and then upgrade later, the discount will not be available — it only works if you upgrade and then renew.

  • a lifted pixel: "If we have saved looks that use a subscriber only wardrobe or vanity item, will we still have access to it should our subscription expire?"

Right now anyone can switch back to any saved look regardless of subscription status. This is kind of a loophole and it's possible that it will get fixed at some point in the future, but it is not a priority for us.
