Kids These Days!

Maybe I'm just an ol' grumpy-pants… but it seems to me that if someone does something nice for you, the least you can do is say thank-you!

Numerous times now I've given TP lifts or summons to folks who need them to or from Rook attacks. Only ONE glitch who wasn't previously a friend so far has even bothered to thank me for my trouble.

When I've had occasion to follow someone via TP, I've always offered verbal thanks AND some sort of food to help replenish the energy expended. Is that such a hard thing to do? Really, thanks alone would be more than sufficient. Instead, the glitches just head off without a word of any kind—total silence!

What am I, a subway train?

Okay, I've said my piece. Now GTHOOML! :D

  • Paging Emily Post! Emily Post to the white courtesy phone (err, forum) please!

I agree with your expectation for common courtesy. For TPs only, I think many players assume since you're going somewhere anyway and you offered the lift and it isn't costing you any more, they don't "owe" you anything so they forget about being polite. I feel differently about summons since that is costing you more. I've also considered that if you TP or summon to a rook attack the first thing on the player's mind is to get right into the attack and they may forget to thank you.

That said, with the TPs and summons I've done (not a ton but enough), I usually do get a thank you and sometimes food and I appreciate it.

On my side, I feel bad when I'm running through a street intent on a task or destination and someone generous gives me things or hugs/kisses and I don't say thank you. That has happened many times and I'm sure Miss Manners and Ms. Post would be horrified.

  • Well, you never know what is going on in a person's head at the time, or in real life. Some folks play a lot cuz they're disabled, and some because they are caregivers at home. And then I also don't think you can assume all players speak English primarily. Yeah, some are just inconsiderate, but it's more pleasant to think they may be just distracted.

  • I agree.  I wonder where the courtesy has gone.  When I'm autonavigating through streets to a destination (I do this a LOT, since it's way faster than doing it manually with the lag I always have) and someone gives me something and leaves or I leave before I can say thank you, when I notice it I immediately open a chat window and thank them personally.  There have only been a couple times I've not been able to, when they've gone offline immediately or my computer has been glitchy.  Err no pun intended.  >_<

So.. yeah.  I'm right there with you on this.

  • I speak 6 languages. They could say thanks in whatever language they speak, and even if I don't know it, I'll probably understand. And a hug costs nothing and is universally grokked!

But to stalk off without a word? Sheesh.

  • As I love helping people get trophies and stuff, I know how 4 out of 5 people run away and only half the time say thanks if you force the items on them. D:

But the ones who thank you are so rewarding. :D

  • Heh. "GTFOOML" is one of the things my gnome says. (That's 'frack' for you BSG fans.)

And I'm generally willing to help with repairs or even dispense a Flaming Humbaba just because someone asked. I left housewarming presents for my neighbors when I moved in.

I trust that the outcome isn't that you're becoming less willing to do these kind of things. For everyone who snipes things off the ground because you just filled up your inventory, there are people who say 'thank you' or offer something in return.

  • I actually feel extremely uncomfortable when somebody says "thank you" when I've given them something or bestowed random kindness, etc. I understand that I'm the minority in this, but I would personally stop doing this sort of thing if most people did thank me.

  • @Effigy: I'm with you. I don't mind someone saying thanks, but I'm not doing this for a reward. I'm just being nice.

  • Gotta say that I don't like to type when I am playing. Usually I only am using one hand, maybe eating a meal at the same time. But for a transport I think it more than reasonable to thank someone for the lift. For random gifts to players that haven't ask for anything, not so much.

  • I have to say that I will thank someone if I notice that I have been given something, but if I am distracted, I frequently won't notice.  Distractions include reading chat boxes other than the local one, cooking or other processing, creating an auction or other activity that involves leaving the game page and looking at a different one, or maybe so much stuff is happening in the game window (parties, busy streets) that I just don't notice.

That isn't even counting real life distractions like my cat clawing my leg or my son walking in and demanding my attention - stuff happens!  Please find something better to do than be offended.

  • I guess it seems weird to me that someone would do something as social as riding along on a teleport then not say anything, not even goodbye or some kind of other friendly thing.

I've never been accused of being perfectly attuned to social niceties, but this seems kind of basic and obvious. It would feel pretty cold to me if I gave someone a ride in my car and they got out without saying anything at all. I can't imagine doing that myself.

  • I hear you OP. "Thank you" does not take  many major muscles to type. They can type ty, Thanks, or Thank you. If they can ask for a port they can type thank you. It is only two little words that can mean so much for the person giving. And I would not say "kids these days" as many that play this game is adults... this is considered an adult game. Wonder if adults are acting this rudely what we ARE teaching our kids now days huh?

  • I often give out small foods (waffles, oatcakes, that kind of thing) to Glitchen I meet as long as they don't appear to be AFK.

I don't expect a return gift (although it is really nice when people respond by playing a musicblock or hugging me!), and as has already been mentioned, there's plenty of reasons why a player might not respond at all, such as real life distractions, a crashy/hangy computer, limited hand function, or simply not noticing the bit in the chat pane saying someone's given them something. So a lack of thank-yous isn't giving me sleepless nights, or making me dislike people, or even putting me off distributing goodies.

On the other hand, typing "ty" or even ":)" isn't terribly difficult. It can feel a bit... (can't think of the word, "depressing" is too strong) to distribute gifts to twenty Glitchen and not get *any* acknowledgement.

Interestingly, I find that if I've handed out waffles to five Glitchen in an area, and they all ignore it... and then I hand out to a sixth and *that* person says in the public local chat "thanks for the waffle!" then all the other five suddenly find their manners and chime in as well.

  • Thank you does not exist in the vocab of most under 25yr olds.  They are given everything so it is just expected, not appreciated.  SPOILED.   all of em!!!
    IMO

  • I never expect anything when I do nice things for people, and therefore, I am never disappointed.

  • /grumpy old person rant
I've had this happen often too. Although it does make it so that when one does receive a thanks or an acknowledgement, it becomes even more special because it's so rare.
    *sigh*

  • I agree with Wintera.  Expectations of thanks says more about you than another's lack of gratitude.

Give without expectation, or don't give.
