Thoughts on Glitch so far

Post your thoughts on Glitch so far! Since that probably might include some ideas and suggestions I put this in the Ideas forum instead of the General forum.

Though my starting character looked like it's been beaten down with the ugly stick, I like the aesthetics of the game. Sometimes it's a bit difficult telling what's the foreground and what's not though, especially in that one (early?) quest where you have to collect 30 quoins in a set time.

The character customisation is actually all right, especially in regards to how you can position your facial features. I would like to see a few more eye options though...

Jumping is less intuitive than I'd like, but it's still relatively easy to catch on and not game breaking. Still, I wouldn't want to be playing Ninja Gaiden with controls like that.

I find it funny that it takes longer for me to load an item description than it does for an area. I'm perfectly fine with the area loading times though, and I'm sure the developers know how long it takes for the UI to load.

Dragging items around the inventory is a bit unresponsive, too... Speaking of the inventory, it'd be nice to see item effects by just hovering over an item instead of having to open a pop-up to see it. I'd also like to suggest being able to have items switch slots by just dragging them over one another, instead of having to move those items to other slots and then into the slots you want.

I'm really liking the skills. They're pretty entertaining, and I was pleasantly surprised to see alchemy on there. The bureaucracy skills are funny too.

The mention of reticulating splines in the loading bar makes me wonder if there'll be llamas in the game, too.

  • Maybe it's premature, but I want to add a few things:

I've been jumping a bit more and it's actually not as bad as when I first tried it. I don't know whether this was just lag or specific to spinach high-jumping.

The animations are pretty solid. I don't know why I didn't notice this before but the animation of hair falling (and I mean during a jump, not while experiencing male pattern baldness) is especially fluid. The multiplane effects of the background is a nice touch and does help with distinguishing what's the foreground and what's not (though sometimes I do wish there was a little more contrast somehow), and watching your cookware and other tools go at it is pretty cute. The only thing I can really "complain" about is that it looks very awkward for a character to be walking but then covering so much ground and that perhaps there should be a running animation, and that the animation of pigs walking is not realistic. Otherwise I'm really happy with the way things look.

I know that the game is still in beta and that there'll probably be more work on the audio done before the game is released, but the Musicblocks really feel out of place. They're cute, but not even long enough to work as a little commercial ditty. I'm not sure about spending resources on Musicblock-exclusive tunes either, not unless you can place them in your house and make them background music. (I will kick myself if the previous sentence is true. And if it comes to that, may I make a suggestion that you put this in the description?) Also, this probably isn't intentional, but the general folksy ambient music that plays throughout the game really, really reminds me of Psychonauts (this is a compliment). It's actually pretty calming and puts me in a nice bacon-summoning mood. Still, I'd be a bit sad if that was the only track that played throughout the game.

PS: I really like the quirky writing. Giving happy endings to butterflies? I see wat u did thar.

  • Good points...I too would like better contract between foreground and background, though trying to figure out which is which is sort of entertaining also.

Per you laggy issues...if you are using Firefox, there are known issues with it.  The game seems to be optimized for Chrome, so try that (though you will experience a lot more flash crashes in Chrome than FF).  Also, they posted an alternate rendering version in the general forum folder. May want to try that as well.

  • I'm using Chrome for this, and I don't experience much lag with the game. The lag I do experience is rather jarring, but not too often. I guess I should mention I'm using Windows 7, and am directly connected instead of wireless. (But I have AT&T...) I just saw that thread about the experimental renderer, and I'm definitely going to try it out on the next testing session.
