Since I'm ignored in the Bugs forum...

Can someone help me with this: http://www.glitch.com/forum/bugs/7484/?

Considering that I can play it fine on my netbook or desktop, this is just really annoying to have this issue on my laptop. Can someone point me to a possible solution? The Flash debugger thing and all the stuff in the Bugs forum sticky aren't not working.

  • Spent an hour so far trying to get in world. Since the desktop is my husband's work computer and the game looks like horsecrap on my netbook, this is the only way to get it to play and it's a waste of my time, IMO. I'd rather have my money back or gift my subscription to someone else instead of having to deal with this every week.

  • Disclaimer: I am not an official Glitch employee, but I have done Windows desktop troubleshooting for 13+ years.

It sounds like an issue with your Flash player. Hit up Control Panel, then Programs & Features and completely remove Adobe Flash Player 10 (all items). Then reboot. After reboot, go to flash.com and grab the latest version of Flash player. This might fix it.

  • Thanks, Mackenzie. I did that before and I just did it again. The only thing that succeeds in doing, is turning my screen black. I don't know why.

  • Hi Jarhaven
I am also not an employee but pretty good with computers :)
    -what browsers have you tried?

  • Jarhaven, I'll be posting some questions in your bug thread.

  • As mentioned at the link, I've used Chrome and Firefox. The computer is running Win7. I just played on my husband's Win7 desktop, in Chrome, with no problems. I can "play" on my netbook (XP, Chrome) no problems.

  • Do you have trouble ONLY on your laptop? Have you always had trouble on the laptop?
If so, I have a few suggestions:
    1. Check to make sure your anti virus program on your laptop is not blocking glitch site.
    2. Make sure your browsers are the most current versions available.
    3. Do you have trouble accessing any other flash sites while using your laptop? (you tube, facebook games, etc?)  If you do, flash might be the issue.  You may have to do a flash cleanup which I can explain if all else fails)
    4. You describe the screen as black...can you still see your toolbars, search box, etc. at the top of your browser or does the game freeze the browser or your laptop completely?
I apologize if you may have answered or tried some of these things already, I clicked your link but there are alot of replies.  I will have more suggestions based on your answers.

  • Gadzooks:
    1. Anti-virus shouldn't be an issue, but I'll check again
    2. I'm using the same (latest) version of Chrome on all the computers, AFAIK
    3. No problems with flash on any other site.
    4. I can see see the bookmark/address bar above the screens. They are either black or white, but always with music.

I wish I could do a screen share when this happens. It's so utterly bizarre, that it only happens on the laptop.

  • How much RAM does the laptop have, i wonder..?

  • My first thought is that you may have a compatibility issue with Adobe Flash. Did you know that Chrome has its own version of Flash associated with it? Check and see if you have Flash loaded in through Adobe and Chrome at the same time. You can disable the Chrome Flash plugin, or you can uninstall your whole Adobe Flash program from the "Add/Delete" programs tab in the control panel. Good luck. I like the idea of "googling" your problem to see if you can find others with the same situation.

ETA: I "googled" {black screen when loading flash game} and a bunch of stuff came up. It seems like many of the same suggestions you've been offered though. Another thing, might be to downgrade your version of Flash by going to adobe.com

  • I know I've accidentally done this before: do you have an Adblock or Flashblock extension installed? Because the flash content (i.e. the whole game) would probably be blocked by the extension.

  • Holly, I know. That's what the sticky is about in the Bugs forum. I went through all of that, as referenced above. Flirtyvon...the RAM situation is good.

  • I've had issues even with glitch-related extensions, because they tend to slow things down to the point of failure. Try with no extensions, and see how that works. Also: Start comparing any possible statistics: network, computer specs, browser specs, etc. My laptop will not play glitch, because it's 4 years old and held together with glue and wishes. It's far too slow, and it basically craps out if I even try -- although it craps out in a mysterious fashion, it'll try to load and freeze white or freeze with some aspects loaded. If I'm really lucky, I'll get half of the world being "created" and loop that little section. What are the exact specs for this computer? Proc, RAM, video, etc?

    In retrospect:
    Processor:
    Total RAM:
Video specs (onboard, what card if not):

  • One other thing I forgot to ask, have you run any virus scans recently?  It could be a virus hijacking your browser.  I use a few different scans (free of course) that tend to catch different things.  I can suggest them if you'd like.

Also, check your add ons from the chrome toolbar. (options, under the hood)  Make sure things are enable or disabled as needed.  You also might want to clear cookies, cache, if you haven't already. Turn on javascript
Java and shockwave may need to be updated as well.

Ok, so I rarely use Chrome so I'm not super familiar with it, But we had issues on one of our computers where flash would not work on internet explorer but would work on firefox.

After some research I found that one of the updates to flash was missing a part that was added via an older version.  To fix this I had to uninstall flash completely and reinstall.  This required downloading an uninstaller program from adobe.  Sometimes an older version may work better.
Here are some very helpful articles from adobe, that may help solve your issue.

    kb2.adobe.com/cps/494/cpsid...

I hope one of these things works for you.  I know it seems complicated and very annoying.  Let me know if you have more questions.

  • Jarhaven, as kevbob's responded to your original thread about this issue, I'm moving this over to the Bugs Forum as well.
