Street Projects

Hi all! Just wanted to post some thoughts and ideas regarding the street building projects. First of all - I absolutely LOVE them! I think the projects are a great way to get people engaged and invested in the world as well as being great community building events.

Generally, my thoughts around improving them are about involving more people and more low-level players. I'm currently level 12 and have yet to be able to contribute to any of the "actions" parts of the street building. (I don't know if this is normal for my level, I've been focusing on building up Animal Kinship and haven't seen any actions associated with that on any of the projects.) Additionally, it seems that the objects are all donated rather quickly; I'm sure there are people with large stores of particular objects that can contribute heavily when new projects open up. So! here are a few ideas that might help involve more / lower-level players in street building:

- Have a "Number of People Required to Contribute" for each object. Say, for example, the project needs 400 Chunks of Beryl. The project could require a minimum of 12 people to contribute the Beryl so one or two people can't complete it by themselves.

- Reduce the skill level required to do the Actions. Why only let higher-level players contribute? And/or the project could actually have actions that can only be completed by players of a lower level.

- "Anchor" the street. Ok, this idea's a little out there so stick with me. If the Glitch world is a physical manifestation of the Giant's thoughts, then perhaps the new streets need to be "grounded" somehow before they can come into existence. The street would need to be "anchored" to other streets around the world, and this would be done by running from the Project Street to these other streets. For example, a new street in Shimla Mirch might need to be anchored to: Vicar's Peak, Pinhigh Prose, Coldthorp Lam & Oktyabrya. Players would need to somehow grab the anchoring task from the street spirit and then run from Shimla Mirch to Point B (let's say Oktyabrya) in a certain amount of time (no teleporting allowed!) Then maybe if the gods are feeling friendly they can teleport them back to the project :) If they don't make it in time the task is reset (to prevent people from taking the task and never following through). This gives players of any level another way to contribute to the projects!

Looking forward to contributing to more street building!

  • The first few things you mentioned have been offered up in various guises and were pretty controversial (search for "rope a noob" in the forums), so I am not even going to touch them, but:

Anchoring--I really like this idea, it's a good way to participate on pure hamster power, which is great if you are new to the game.

I am not as sure about the timing aspect, but that's just because I can remember when playing Glitch pretty much only involved zooming past other players on the way to someplace else...street projects were actually developed to fix this as a perceived problem. Also, lag is still a big issue for a lot of players, so it might be hard to actually test this.

I like the idea of actually putting down a kind of anchor (see other thread on dropping items).

  • Ha! "rope a noob" - I like the name, there should be a quest named that :) I'll have to check out what else has been suggested, thanks! I just know that I was dyyyying to help on the street projects and felt very limited as to what I could actually do to contribute.

  • One of the big reasons we have stockpiled is that most of the older players have finished teh quests and are now just grinding and stockpiling. Sorry. The anchor idea is cool, I like the idea of more off-street projects.

Unfortunately, there may not be many noobs helping out on projects. Instead they are out doing quests and trying to level up. At level 25+ we are pretty safe in the upper levels so again have other things to do.

  • I forgot that I also wanted to mention a really positive experience that I had while working on the street building projects. A group of players (led by striatic I believe) organized a dirt farming entourage and we bounced around for a while working together to dig up some good ol' dirt chunks! We did this taking advantage of (what I believe is) an exploit in the game - if more than one player selects "dig" at the same time on a patch of dirt, each player gets the dirt instead of having to do it individually and waiting for it to respawn. This was actually my first social experience in the game and it was so much fun to not only be doing a group activity but to be working together and feeling like I was contributing. The only problem is that I presume this exploit will eventually be fixed. It would be great to see this purposefully designed into the game somehow to reproduce the same levels of working together! This could either be in the exact same manner as the exploit currently works, or an item could give more of a resource when simultaneously harvested by multiple people.

Of course if the exploit isn't going to be be fixed this is all a moot point!

  • Actually, we found that bug several months ago. The devs were so impressed with our barn(acle) parties they made a quest using the same technoque in bogs.

  • i am pretty sure the barnacle and dirt exploits will be fixed .. but i am likewise pretty sure that there will be other "simultaneous action" harvests built into the game.

harvests that make more sense to do as a group all at once and get more or better stuff.
