zoom zoom

[Follow the new topic for more zoom stuff]

[UPDATE: We're disabling this for the time being. Thanks for helping test!]

Many of you have been enjoying /zoom (if you don't know what it is, don't worry). Now we're testing a more direct way of changing your location's zoom level while you play: your mouse's scroll wheel.

Try rolling your scroll wheel when the mouse cursor is over the viewport (the main game window you play in). If it isn't working, try clicking the viewport (make sure you are not typing in a chat window while doing this).

Laptop users in general: Your trackpad usually has a "gesture" to cause scrolling -- either two fingers swiped up/down at the same time, or one finger on the right side, for instance.

Caveats:
* Every computer and web browser scrolls at different speeds, so please note those if you think it's scrolling too slowly or too quickly.
* OS X Lion users: If you are using "Natural Scrolling" on your trackpad, the direction you scroll may not feel "right" given how the game zooms -- please share your experience, either way!

  • First I was all D:  because I dont use a mouse.

Then I was all :D because we can use the track pad?!

    Wheeee!

  • I just entered the game to try it out with my OS X Lion computer (in which I've disabled natural scrolling, since i'm a much bigger fan of the traditional way to do it), and i couldn't zoom with my trackpad at all! :(

  • Thanks for change! But will the max (min?) zoom ability of the mouse be increased? I can zoom much further out using the /zoom command than I can with my mouse, which only seems to go to .7 or so.
Posted 9 months ago by MaryLiLamb Subscriber! | Permalink
  • /zoom will be removed, and it is unlikely that we will let you zoom out [much] more than 0.7 -- but that is to be determined if we even keep this :)
Posted 9 months ago by Jono Subscriber! | Permalink
  • May I respectfully request that we keep it? :)

  • Eek Jono
    No trackpad zoom here,
not sure if scrolling is enabled or not, I'm a complete idiot when it comes to such things, how can I check if this is possible on my laptop touchpad?
Posted 9 months ago by Faereluth Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Faereluth, can you scroll web pages without clicking the scroll bar?

I've also considered a Google Maps style zoom slider on the left of the game window for those that don't have physical scrolling.
Posted 9 months ago by Jono Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Jono I love you :D
I managed to turn on my scrolling, and now Its working,
    yay,
But how do I get back to normal zoom?
Posted 9 months ago by Faereluth Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I've found the zoom function brilliantly useful in the community gardens!! I can sit by the plot I've planted or guanoed and still water the other plots that are normally far....far....FAR....away lol :) Thanks for the update!!

  • It's neat to not have to type, but would like some sort of indicator on the screen as to how far I am zoomed out.  Would also like to be able to zoom in a bit too.

Please let us at least zoom out to .6 (though I'd prefer a restriction of about .3) so we can do a single picture capture of the current home interiors with one shot - soooo, hate piecing pictures together. I know the homes will eventually change, but that was one of the nice things about being able to zoom out as far as we wanted, and not being limited...the current bog homes you could capture with just one photo if you zoomed out far enough...with .7 that won't be possible now, and I suspect some of our new homes will quickly rival the size of current bog and Alakol homes when we get the chance...

  • If you do decide on adding the zoom slide bar PLEASE make an option that can be turned off and on! Between having the mini map, a few buffs, the friends list pulled out, and the messages from activities on the game screen it getting rather crowded.
Along that same line it would be nice to not have the mini map while in our houses ... will make an idea post about it.
Thanks for the mouse wheel :)

  • I use a tablet and pen and can't use a mouse any more thanks to an old RSI -- I lobe the zoom facility, and would miss out on it if it was a mouse-wheel control only :(

Please Jono - implement a discreet little on-screen slider pretty please!

  • Thanks - neat feature - like it right off the bat, but just did a quick trial...not really tested it during a longer game play time to see if I accidentally use it and it gets to be annoying since it's so simple now.  Agree to wanting the indicator of amount of zoom (though also agree we need toggles to turn on/off because the current screens are way too crowded).  Agree to it needs to be less than .7 - something like .5 or .6 would work.  And agree to having options other than just the mousewheel...can we just keep the typing option, for those of us that are anal and want precision zooming in/out or need it because the mouse/touchpad option doesn't work for them?

  • I second Cabana Boy's comment, being able to zoom out further would be very much appreciated!
Posted 9 months ago by Leïla Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Oh...this is sooooooo much more intuitive! Have a trackpad, and it just works so smoothly! Thank you!
Posted 9 months ago by Dahlia DreadNaught Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Also, if a sidebar zoom slider-thingy feature gets added, could it possibly include an option to be turned off, for those of us with trackpads and OCD who don't want cluttered screens?
Posted 9 months ago by Dahlia DreadNaught Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I third Cabana Boy's comment. With .6, you can screenshot the whole test house at once. This may be less useful as we start expanding homes, but it's great for capturing a good-sized space. The wider zooms, like .3, are great for capturing action at parties, or a whole 50K home (sans yard). But a zoom of .6 would be great. Pleeeease? *bats eyelashes*

  • This new zoom just doesn't have enough ooooom!  It is not powerful enough to be useful.

It is cool and easy to use and thank you! but I (for one) would really appreciate being able to zoom all the way to .5 or even .4..

If you feel like it is giving away too much then make it a skill that people need to learn like eyeballery. But don't take the kick out of it so it's just a cosmetic thing.

  • I don't actually have a gesture option for scrolling... so it's not really gonna do much for me if that's gonna end up being the only way to use it.
And .7 really doesn't go far enough for all applications (as others have noted)- I find myself using .4 pretty regularly in the mines. .7 seems way too conservative for the uses people are putting it toward.

  • On OS X Lion. It works with the trackpad and with Magic Mouse.

It didn't appear to work at first, though. I had to make the scroll gesture several times, it seems, before it actually zoomed as if the gesture doesn't always "take". Works better actually on Magic Mouse than it does on the trackpad, at least for me.

  • Not sure about NN, but 0.45 works very well when mining AB. Perhaps allowing per-street overrides of the default -- this would also address the 0.2 "expliot" in the Drop streets (eg where a lower limit of 0.8 might make sense)

  • Feels just right using the Magic Mouse on OSX Lion, which is pretty good considering it feels *awful* zooming in/out in something like Google Maps using the natural scroll. Nice work, Jono :)

  • link it into the page up/down keys or maybe the +/- keys also...for those people on a laptop or have an ancient mouse.

  • I'm hoping that the zoom feature will stay.  It's VERY helpful when group-mining, as we can see where the rocks have "popped".

  • Pleeeease let us keep zoom as it is... having played the whole game through several times, I have run out of things to do, but zoom has let me come up with new stuff.  I know that the graphics get wonky, but it's SO worth it.

  • I really hope zooming further out than 0.7 can be kept too. Some incredible effects like this cannot be seen in larger zooms: cl.ly/ETdc

  • Whoa, nice! This feels much smoother than /zoom was. :)
You can't zoom out as far as you could with /zoom, but I'm sure TS has a valid reason for limiting it.
Posted 9 months ago by Varaeth Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Such a great addition! And since .7 seemed ideal when I was using the /zoom command, I don't mind the limitation at all. Thanks!

  • Yeah I hope that there will be an option to turn it off / on.. I always accidentally hit the "trackpad" scroll thingy on my husband's laptop and it drives me INSANE.  ~O_o~

Edit - Well it's not too bad now that I've tried it.  I kinda like having a larger view of the world.  :)

  • lovely addition! on my hp mini (windows 7 starter edition is the OS) it seems to be a tiny bit laggy with google chrome, but it's not lagging enough to really affect use at all.. and i agree with TomC about being able to zoom (just a little bit more) is something that greatly enhances gameplay and appreciation of Ur! thanks for all you do, TS! =)
Posted 9 months ago by starrkittyface Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I don't like it.

The amount of zoom is pretty useless.  When I could zoom before I almost always used .25 or so to get a panoramic view.  This small amount of zoom doesn't really add much to my game play, since it doesn't add much to my field of vision.

My track pad doesn't like it.  For whatever reason, I have to swipe several times, and I don't seem to have any control over the amount of zoom.  For the amount of time I have to spend adjusting it, I can camera around or even walk to the spot to inspect the area.
