Learning New Skills

A little preface -- My friend introduced me to Glitch only 3 tests ago, I'm only level 20 and am not nearly as experienced as most of you.

Okay so, as I'm reading through the forums I'm noticing alot of people talking about skill times & the implementation of the 5% increase in the time it takes to learn after your tenth skill & how it is affecting them. Well, my thread isnt about that - but inspired by it.

I know a few people who play this game now, and it seems to me like they are all trying to learn every skill. Now, I just think about the law of diminishing returns when I think of someone who is learning every skill available.

For a multitude of reasons, (and at this point I feel like I might be the only one who feels this way) when I started playing Glitch, I hadnt thought that you were supposed to master every skill. I had originally just wanted to learn Better Learning skills, Teleportation Skills, & Meditation skills. Of course, this has changed a little, though I totally still see myself only trending towards the the right side of the skill tree. I feel like this was the way the game was sort of intended (not to take away from players choice) but knowing that there are unlearning skills, I often feel like when new skills are added, I'll definitely have an edge over players who have been tallying the entire skill bar as far as being able to learn that skill & use it much faster. I'm just opinionated so I thought I would post this here for players who havent yet filled out their skillbar & to perhaps think about specializing in only a few skill sets. :)

EDIT: Also, if you disagree, feel free to enlighten me with your own opinion/idea

  • I am one of those people you refer to who has tried to learn up as many skills as possible rather than specialize, mainly because I wanted to have all those different things to try out in beta, and I felt encouraged to do that because we will have a reset and I will get to start learning again. And I will certainly do it very differently when we do reset, and specialize in the things that will be most useful to how I choose to play the game. How that is, I do not know yet, and it kind of scares me to think that I will be foregoing certain skillsets. It will be a tough decision I think, but yes, in terms of optimizing time spent learning, it will certainly be necessary to specialize in a few skills.

  • While in beta I've pretty much been a general-specialist...I've worked to level 5 mining to earn my daily currants, and level 5 in Teleportation to get around quickly and high levels in Gardening and a couple others...Will probably do it differently once we go live...

  • I actually was wondering about the unlearning skill as well.  Are there going to be limits to the skills we can get (even with the time increase)?  It would make sense unless we suddenly get some intelligence attribute that can be increased to learn more skills, but I think that almost goes against the game itself.

I'm also relatively new to the game, but I know I put a lot more concentration into cooking and meditation than in more other fields.  I think it would be nice if we could have specialisations, like the skill tree we have now could be the basics and then there were different schools we could sign up for (cooking, vet, etc) that make us have an advantage in that field and we could build off each other.

  • I believe there have been quite a few discussions that in the future there will be so many skills to learn, that it will be nearly impossible to learn them all, but instead we will have to specialize. I've been doing some studying of the skills as well...and have begun to think that there is some foundational learning of all skill sets initially (ie, up to the first spent emblem requirement of the skills) just to enjoy the basics of the game. But then after that, especially as we get more skills, you will definitely need to specialize.  However, I like the concept of unlearning so that as I get bored with a specialized skill, I can eventually unlearn it and learn some other specialization area.  I'm most interested in the Tinkering/Engineering, Mining/Smelting, Cooking, and just out of necessity the Animal and Teleportation. I didn't find I gained much with the Alchemistry skills (though I thought I'd enjoy that aspect of the game), the Meditative Arts or the advanced Gardening that I would use regularly...yet. I'm glad I got the chance to try them out before reset, and that there will be a reset.  Feel for the new players that will try out stuff in the game, and then are stuck having to unlearn things just to get a better skill tree.  I wish there was a personal induced reset, so that I could start over if I didn't like the track that my Glitch was taking...yea, it would require starting from scratch, but for me, that would keep the game interesting as I could regularly chose different options of gameplay.

  • I don't have much to add except that my sense upon entering the beta was "Learn it all!".

However I have been a bit mystified about the paradox of learning unlearning.

Is unlearning a valuable/needed skill at the moment in beta?

  • Unlearning isnt yet offered to answer your question, Cat face~ its just there to tease me. Im really curious asto why there is 3 levels of it lol

  • Since I still don't know what i want to be when I grow up I'm pretty much learning everything.  That may change with the reset.  I know there will be different skills I will learn first after the reset.

  • IMHO, it's a good idea to learn everything you can, in order to see what you really enjoy.  The first time around, I didn't learn the higher levels of Tinkering.  Since the last reset, I've learned them, and found that I use them constantly.  (They let you repair tools more efficiently, as well as craft new ones... so when your friend's cocktail shaker breaks, you can make him a new one without going to a vendor or auction.)

Unlearning hasn't been implemented yet, and isn't truly useful at this point anyway, because the skill tree is still much smaller than it will be later on.  The idea is that you'll want to specialize in the future, and if you've already learned something which you don't really enjoy, you can unlearn it in order to shorten other skills' learning times.
