Is there a way to pause the game while in-world?

I notice that if I don't move or do anything, my glitch falls asleep, but this doesn't pause the game (time ticks, energy drops, etc). I don't want to "exit world" when I just need to go away from the computer for a few minutes... is there some way to pause the game?

  • It's a live world, not a single player game.  There's no way to "pause" a live world.  Why not log out?  There's no penalty against it.  And at least you won't come back to your computer and find your glitch in Hell.

  • No. The world does not pause for anything (except the devs, should they want it). It's a persistent world, with things happening and changing all the time whether you're offline or online.

  • Ahhh right, that would make sense that there's no way to pause ;-) Dur. Thanks!

  • It would be nice for there to be a pause for things like ancestral lands timer when AFK... This game is distracting enough from real life, without being tied into a timer like that one for no particular reason I can think of offhand.

  • Have you picked up quoins in the ancestral lands?  Quite a nice increase from regular quoins.  The timer is there for a reason.  And I wouldn't go AFK in the ancestral lands anyway, unless you don't have anything of value on you.  Juju bandits would have no problem stealing your stuff.

  • If someone knocks on my real-life door, the game is the least of my concerns till the door has been answered. I'm sure some players are also care givers of various sorts who attend to children who wake up crying, and so on. When I went to ancestral lands, I always felt the need to think ahead about possible interruptions before stepping into them. Just saying...

  • The game doesnt have to pause..just you. A simple command that lets you stay logged in say for 10 minutes max so you can quickly return to the game after those unexpected interruptions..All for you would stop..No energy drop, no nothing..youd be there and people could see your there (Maybe with a big P above your head) but they couldnt interact with you till you unpause the game or the 10 minutes are up. At which point youd have had a choice before getting to the pause state of either returning to the game in AFK mode or be logged out all together..
I wish it had it as I get several interruptions while im playing and I often end up coming back to find I just missed the rube or my character died, etc...It happens...Id picked to be logged out after the 10 minutes since my long interruptions can last for about an hour...

  • @mandy the afk state is useful for the people around you to know that you're probably not paying attention and they shouldn't expect any kind of immediate response from you.

@justme if you have enough notice to hit pause, you have enough notice to exit the world.  The energy and mood drain isn't too onerous for those unavoidable interruptions (you'll be all fixed up at the beginning of the next game day, after all), and having totally inert/un-interactable glitchen all over the place with big Ps over their heads would damage the immersiveness of the game.  All the time you're in-world, maintaining your session costs some small amount of real-world resources; it's reasonable to have some small incentive not to leave it open when you're not there.

I would be in favor of an option in the account settings that would specify a maximum AFK period before the game automatically kicks you out.

  • I use the forward and backward buttons on my mouse/browser to 'pause' the game.  Once you've exited once, going 'forward' takes you to the survey screen, and going 'backward' takes you from the survey screen to the game.

  • @agent68 I like it! I've always closed my tab but I think I'll try your approach :0)

  • "Why not log out?  There's no penalty against it."

"@justme if you have enough notice to hit pause, you have enough notice to exit the world"

examples of just not getting it.

let's address the first quote first. of course there is a penalty against logging out! if you are in mid IM conversation, you cannot receive responses and appear to have just vanished every time you do this. clearly a penalty. also, the load time of re-loading the game and all of its assets is cumbersome and annoying. clearly a penalty.

to the second quote - no. once you have a penalty for logging out, and there clearly is a penalty, then you have to consider whether it is worth it to logout or not, and it is that time that makes "pause and leave by reflex" impossible. you cannot "logout by reflex" to respond to the doorbell because you have to consider the adverse effects, whereas "pausing" has no such effects and is something you could just do, whenever.

"and having totally inert/un-interactable glitchen all over the place with big Ps over their heads would damage the immersiveness of the game."

and all the sleeping, AFK glitches don't do exactly the same thing? coz they do. whenever i see a sleeping glitch i have to think "are they doing the dishes or what?"

i personally think "paused" glitches could just dematerialize, and i like the idea of being automatically logged out after 10 minutes of being paused.

  • I like the idea of setting a maximum time spent AFK before it kicks you, especially if we could set it ourselves!
