Chrome / Flash Issue (A general FYI)

Could have sworn there was another thread to this effect, but it's worth repeating.

Many of us are using Chrome to play Glitch, I thought I'd put this in the General Forums. The problems you're experiencing might NOT be a bug... rather a failing of Chrome itself.

In early March, Google rolled out Chrome 10. Problem is, the new version has issues running Flash. Without getting too technical, Flash often crashes at weird times, especially if you are running more than one page with Flash at a time.

So if you find you're experiencing more crash problems when playing Glitch, the problem might not be Glitch at all. It's been a month, and the problem persists. It looks like a big mess that's going to take them a while to sort out.

The following articles give more detail:

  • Yup trav, I agree! Thanks for posting this.  Running Glitch was fine until the Chrome update, plus I am experienceing these crashes outside of Glitch.  Given there is no real solution as yet, I have had to switch to Firefox for now.  Chrome is still my preferred browser as FF and Safari run slower.  However, this is the 2nd time in the past year or so that a Chrome update has caused a Flash problem that they don't tell anyone about, with many sent rushing round thinking it's other apps/plug ins that are causing the problem.  I just hope they don't keep us waiting much longer as I would like to go back to my usual browser, however, they wil lose out if they don't fix it!

  • Trav, the thread you are referring to was in the "Known issues" in the Bugs forum, which has since been unlinked because it was out of date. I've only had two Flash crashes in 30 hours of testing, so I'll continue to test using Chrome. It seems to like me.

  • Yep, chrome is crashing at other sites (even the dreaded facebook) as well.
Too bad, it is (was?) my preferred browser  :-(

  • I noticed the Flash crashing more frequently right away, but I also run several Flash things at once. I really believed this would be sorted out by now, but it doesn't look to go away for a while. Chrome should receive another update in about 2 weeks (if they continue holding to their 6 week cycle), but there are no indications of a fix. Personally I keep several browsers loaded, but not everyone has a back-up installed already :)

  • I have been having a horrible time with Chrome crashing the past month.  It WAS my preferred browser, hopefully they'll get it fixed!

  • I have been having crash problems for a couple of weeks now with Chrome. Other games I play don't run well in FF, and IE is terrible for me. Hope a fix is immanent.

  • Strangely, I don't think this problem is unique to Chrome.  Flash seems to crash a lot or spit errors for me when I visit blip.tv or other video sites lately.  It's been happening ever since I upgraded to 10.2 or better.  I'm using Firefox 4.

  • When my browsers or computers crashed in the last 10+ years, it was almost always because of Flash.
