Astounded at the lack of tenders visiting route...(yes another moan)

Another glitch asked me to look after her crops and pigs whilst she took an extended time out from the game and for days I've arrived on her street to find the crops gone and the plots consistantly weedy.  So I do my 'good' glitchen duty and clear up the mess and replant out of my own pocket (for the upteenth time) and just now..I went back to check on the garden and amazingly some person (and not even the cat's mother) harvested 2 plots..(just 2) and still didn't bloody tend the weeds.

I mean how hard is it? 'Take, take, gimme, gimme it's all mine' is the attitude I've found whilst looking after this garden.  I only wish I could now see who the visitors were because I would be blocking to beat the band.  I'd actually understand someone leaving the whole lot messy (as it would be a lot of work) but to leave the 2 plots makes me want to shake some sense into them and then ban them for glitchdom forever... : ( grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr (out of my system now - thank you for listening : ) : ) : )

  • I belong to a group that does a fair amount of tending when members can't play for a while.  Basically we tend the piggies -- pet, fill feeders, empty collectors.  If butterflies die we don't replace them until the owner gets back in the game.  I've never replanted garden plots on the street.  I'll clean them up but leave those until the owner returns too.

  • Cleaning the plots up without replanting sounds like a winning strategy here.  It's not your responsibility to make sure the street owner comes home to a grown garden, and if you don't replant than it's much harder to accuse anyone of just taking.  If the garden's weedy again, then you'll know someone else planted too.

  • I know what you mean, Arabesque. When I happen upon a street whose gardens have been stripped, I do clean up after the harvesters, but I can't replant every garden! Most times I don't even have seeds with me. Still, I always live in fear that the owner will arrive and think I am the one who harvested and didn't replant, so if I do have some seeds, I plant 'em!

Some people are just lazy. And not very bright or they would realize that you get goodies by clearing weeds and replanting!

  • I joined the herb route recently

    My gardens are constantly tended

  • Yes, the herb route people rawk.

  • Since you can just shuck the herbs, it is somewhat easier to replant on the herb routes.  However, since Arabesque does mention that the street she's tending has piggies, there is still really no excuse for folks to not replant, when they can feed the piggy to get seeds (and in bulk now too).  I really think that having a small education session in the new tutorial about replanting could help a lot, or having a quest to replant x number of crop plots (and you can't harvest prior to going through this).  As I've said before, common sense and common courtesy often are not very common.

  • Think of it this way, if they leave it weedy, well, that's more iMG and goodies for you. With the Hoe Down upgrade you get 10iMG per plot you tend, 15 plots? That's 150 iMG right there, plus the extra for watering and extra for planting. Did I mention the goods? You get musicblocks that are sellable as well as fuel cells and rubies.

This is just sheer laziness, like people who leave rock stubs behind (for the love of Zille people, rocks do NOT respawn if they're half mined). Now of course, something could have come up IRL for these people and that's why they left it that way.

However, it's not too hard to make seeds. Feed a piggy a whole crop stack (80) and you'll get 27 seeds back. Herbs? Shuck them. Even someone without herbalism can yield up to 4 seeds per herb, if not 2 for Rookswort, Rubeweed, Gandlevery, and Hairball, and anywhere from 1, 2 and 4 for Yellow Crumb, Purple, and Silvertongue.

I don't run on these routes, mostly because there's some drama surrounding them (I tend to stick to trees, rocks and bog resources) and I don't care to get involved. However, one of my friends does have a community gardens set up in their yard and I check up on it occasionally, making sure I come prepared.

  • In general, I have had very little problems with folks not tending my herb cops after harvesting.

Does it happen? Yes. Of course. But I try to keep in mind that I am always going to notice untended crops. I am much less likely going to notice crops that are reseeded and well watered, for the obvious reasons.

I am also someone who is not going to block anyone for suspected non-tending. There are reasons. Especially now with lower level players. Perhaps their hoe broke and they don't know tinkering yet. That is a very likely scenario that Ur has not really had the opportunity to run into for quite awhile.

I am, however, trying to keep records. Every time I come to my street and find tins of untended crops, I get the list of visitors from my butler and save it. It I ever see a pattern, I will KINDLY and POLITELY contact said Glitch and give a friendly reminded... while also admitting that that I do not know it was them.

So far, I have seen no pattern.

  • Do not worry about it. Don't waste your time and energy on this. Once you let it go you will feel relief. It is not your responsibility to harvest and tend to every plot. It's no one's responsibly.

Should I write on here about how I tend to every plot, how I water even if I know I'm not going to harvest it. Should I explain every detail of my game play to make sure other's feel safe about me visiting their streets? I really could care less if someone thinks I don't tend to the weeds. If they come up on their street and it happens that some plots are messy who's to say I did it? And if they want to blame me for something so little as not hoeing a plot then go for it. My day is not ruined. I don't feel uncomfortable when the owner shows up and there is empty plots. If they want to instantly "blame" me, then so be it. There are TONS of other gardens to tend to without the drama of this person's street.

All this street visiting control has become out of control. Leave it be. Let it go. Checking on butler names, it's all just a little insane.

You NEVER know what has happened on the other side of someone's life. 2 plots uncleaned could be that their computer shut down. Maybe they had an emergency? Maybe their kid is screaming bloody murder and they had to shut off the game because taking care of a child is more important to them at the moment then tending some weeds on a game. Maybe their neighbor's house caught on fire. Maybe they didn't pay their internet bill and it got shut off. Maybe the septic system started to overflow and cleaning up real crap is more important than cleaning up crap on a game. Maybe their electricity got shut off. Maybe they went into labor.

So many possibilities of what is going on on the other side of someone's life. Don't ever just judge on what you see. Stories happen with what you can't see or what you don't know.

  • If you don't want your plants terrorized simply don't put vegetables and herb gardens in your front street.  Put your easy to maintain resources up front and gardens in the backyard.

The current beta community is polite and courteous but I can assure you when the hundreds of thousands come and the game allows them to steal, they will.  It is far to simply for a newb to come by and say, "Oh look free herbs".  Many users won't even read the forums they will just keep harvesting herbs oblivious to your screams of retribution.  You can block all you want but you won't be able to keep up.  You can try and prevent it from happening by putting in policies and send the perpetrator an email but that's just a pain in the back side.

Don't get me wrong I do believe in the goodness inside all people but I'm also observer of the human condition.  Save yourself some time and don't plant gardens in the front yard.

    Just my thoughts....

  • While it may be irritating to arrive on your friend's street to see all the mess, I would urge you not to bother with re-planting. I have oftentimes wandered around the world looking to plant and all the plots are taken up. It's nice to get fully-grown herbs and crops, but it's also nice to come upon empty plots and have an opportunity to toss some seeds in them. I think it's perfectly okay to leave the plots open and let others deal with them.

If you'd like some help tending to your friend's street, drop me a line or leave a message with my butler. I'd be glad to wander through and do what seems to need doing there.

  • Good reminder Eye Wonder!  Thanks for highlighting that sometimes life will get in the way of game time, and we never know what someone else is dealing with IRL.

  • Webbie, people have been predicting that Glitch was going to go to the darkside as soon as we let the next group of people in since sometime in Alpha.

And you know what?  Even when Glitch was open for everyone with a computer to join, the newbies didn't terrorize Glitch.  The first Beta players didn't steal everything, the unwashed masses who came after the public launch didn't steal everything, and now the new players aren't stealing everything.

I'll even predict that when we re-launch, that the hundreds of thousands who come won't steal everything and will, for the most part, be polite and courteous. Just like everyone who has joined since Alpha.

  • I have an alt with over 60 public plots. When I don't want to replant I ignore the untended mess. When I want the easy iMG I find a piggy and go gardening.

Whatever seems fun at the time.

  • WindBorn, I will take that bet.  To be clear I'm not talking about everything.  I'm just talking about the gardens as they are tedious to tend and profitable to steal unless something changes to regulate it a bit.  I think if you read this post and others people are already complaining about the problem.

Don't get me wrong, I hope you're right.

  • Honestly, while I totally get going argh wth at the 2 plots...while it wasn't me it could have been.  Their hoe may have broken, and they might not have the tinkering skill yet.

  • WindBorn, while I kind of agree with you, there have also been numerous changes to the game since Alpha to address specific areas of player grief.  They took away the profit motive from kidnapping piggies; they put in the one minute timer to collect your own crops/herbs; they locked down feeders/collectors on home streets.

I totally believe that the majority of people playing the game are going to be friendly and courteous, but with some things it seems that it takes only a few people to create a lot of grief for others.

Of course I also happen to think that there is no good solution in this case and that people who don't like their gardens being public simply shouldn't put them in public places.  There is far too much variance in what people think of as polite and proper behaviour here.
Posted 4 months ago by Humbabella Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think Humbabella finally hit on the point.  There is a lot of variance in what is expected and "proper" behavior.  Especially regarding "street etiquette."  I put it in quotes, since there is no one really accepted set.   Since I created my street, it has been entirely community driven, aside from my collectors, which only I can collect from anyways.  All the trees, herb gardens, etc are entirely for the use of the community and I don't tend to them at all.  I don't restore, I don't clean plots, I don't replant.

Honestly, I haven't heard word one from anyone about the state of my street, or any negative feedback at all.  The Glitches out there who run my street seem to have it taken care of.  Things get restored, plots get planted, people get herbs and gas.  Sometimes, people even fill my feeders for me, out of the goodness of their hearts.  I often walk out to dirty/unwatered/empty plots.  But you know, I don't stress over it.  If people want stuff to be there, they'll put it there.

The easiest solution continues to be - if you want things to be private, put it in your backyard.  The img cost is the same.  So even if you are a lower level, you can work on the backyard before you work on the street.  You can put 5 or 6 gardens in a fully expanded backyard.  And if you need more than that for whatever it is you are trying to do.... well... then you can run streets in whatever fashion you choose, or go back to the Community Gardens, since I'm sure they are quite empty these days. (They really are still there)
Posted 4 months ago by PTB3 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The Community Gardens are still there, and well tended, PTB3. I work on the gardens daily and I run into several people who also tend them. Sometimes, they're a mess, but usually they're cleared and planted. The piggies don't last, though. They tend to disappear.

Visit the Community Gardens if you haven't been there lately. They're nice!

  • You've got to make your peace with people not doing things the way you want them to or think they ought.

No matter how many note poles and Gnome messages I have on my street, no matter how often I greet visitors and politely ask them to replant what they pick—I still show up every morning to a street in disarray or planted all in one crop. (Generally, the one I ask others to leave the planting of to me.)

This could send my blood pressure rocketing. But not. I offer my street garden as a public service. I will tend it as I think best; when others do likewise, I will just roll with it.

    Aikido FTW.

  • We're never going to agree due to each person having different personalities and therefore having different "Rules" when it comes to their Home Street / Front Yard. Its much easier to just recognize its a public street,  and that out of the % of all the visitors its not the majority that cause you strife. Glitchen are a really giving bunch as a whole, at times things happen that will bother you, please if its small grievances learn to just let it go, otherwise all youre doing is stressing your self out
Posted 4 months ago by Lyrical DejaVu Subscriber! | Permalink
  • PTB3 the "rational" solution would be for people to recognize that their front streets were public.  Not sure that it's the easiest.

One thing that would help would be for players to no longer get the notice "your garden is ready to harvest" when something matures there.  I put a lot of resources on my front street and then just step back and let it be "community driven", as you put it.  I have no collectors and only one piggy and one feeder, on the slope between the trees and the crop garden.  But I still get "your garden is ready" as a reminder that TS thinks that those are my crops and herbs.

I really hope that TS removes this one in-game disconnect between their statement that the street is public and the game behavior that indicates it is private.
