A Noob Sacrifice Quest?

Hello, everyone.

Let me preface this suggestion:  I have a dark sense of humor.  Last night, I had been chatting with a few Glitchen over the best items to donate, and I made the observation that we should be able to donate players under level 5.  (I'll admit:  I'm a bit icon-crazed.)  Out of the progressively more warped conversation, a germ of an idea arose:  a noob (virgin?) sacrifice quest.

The premise is that once a player reaches a certain level they are prompted to coax a player under level five with a special item (player PurpleLogic suggests "level-up licorice"), which enables them to be donated to a shrine.  The "twist" is that you must convince the noob player to trade for that item and consume it.  Once they do, they wake up in hell with a headache and a Bamboozled Badge; the "donating" player completes their quest with whatever appropriate award.  (In a conversation with Voluptua Sneezelips, who has challenged herself to make it to level 60 without dying, it was suggested there be some alternative 'purgatory' that they are sent to.)

In hell (or wherever), the noob gets a stern talking to from a safety croc.  Maybe, the moral will be 'don't take candy from a stranger' or 'be careful in your choice of Glitchy associates'--or it can be purely for the lulz.  Maybe, there is even an option to do a more nice guy/gal angle on the quest.   What say you, Glitchen?  I'd be really interested to see what you think.  At the very least, It was good for some laughs on my end. :-P

Cheers,

Tayyib

  • Crocs? Hell? Quests? No waiting in line for this "stern" talking to?!

Like the idea, but the real question is: How much favor will these "noobs" grant?

And speaking of a nice guy angle, you either trick a person into eating it, or you can take a death yourself?

  • Baptiste, that's a good idea.

My own critique is that it isn't necessarily the best cooperative activity, but also given some of the more serious issues we've had in-game recently, it's a good reminder to be safe on here too.

    I wanna be donated too...

  • Baptiste,

To address you first question as well, it should be a good enough amount of favor (in addition to the reward at the end of the quest) that it should be a hard thing to turn down if you elect the "good gal/guy" route whether it is eating the item yourself as you suggest or what.  I'm not sure how to quantify that, though.  Maybe, someone else will have an idea.

    Cheers,

  • I hate to rain on the love parade here, but I dislike this idea.

The LAST thing we should want to teach new players is that it is a bad idea to accept gifts from other players.

  • Actually, since being treated that way as a new player would have made me quit the game immediately, I propose that the suggestion be turned around.  Any player under level 10 may sacrifice any player in the top 10% of XP (among those currently logged on) and immediately gain enough favor for an emblem from the giant of their choice.

  • What if! New players, perhaps after level 7 or so, get a quest to find a level 60 player in-game, and trade with them. The 60 would have the option to give them something: something amazing-to-a-newbie (i.e. it would have to be something they couldn't craft themselves), or something amazing-with-side-effects... the "level-up licorice," so to speak. The 60 would then have to convince the newbie to consume the licorice, or try the elevator pass, or wave the "magic" lemon... at which time it would essentially act as piggie bait and allow the 60 to donate the hogtied newbie. Something fun and adventurous would happen to the newbie inside the shrine, full of bonuses and awesome weirdness, and perhaps they'd get a smidge of something extra from that Giant for the rest of their Glitchy lives as a result of their intimate enshrined relations.

One might assume that the level 60 players would at least be interested enough in the game to NOT make this a terrible experience for the newbies. Perhaps this is me putting a bit too much faith in people, but I'm allowed a day pass on my misanthropy once in a while, yes?

  • If such a prank had been played on me when I was confused and fumbling around to find my feet, Like Mereret, I too would have stopped playing.

Surely Glitch is about community, sharing and helping. Not making fun of the naive with a hazing Quest

  • i would cry and literally develop post traumatic stress disorder in real life if somebody DARED play a minor trick on me in a fake internet game!!!!!!! i feel violated just thinking about it

  • @Effigy, yes, as parents of many teens are finding out, bullying is bullying and hazing is hazing, and the emotions are the same whether it happens to you face to face, over the phone, in email, Facebook, MMORPGs, where ever.  So setting up people to be bullied when they are actively deciding whether they want to stay with a particular game, which also talks a lot about its great  community, is a really stupid proposition for TS.

  • Amazing how the same handful of people turn out anytime somebody says, "This might be a bad idea" or "This might hurt feelings" to tell everybody to stop whining. I think that gets more tiresome than people doing their best to avoid upsetting others. Can't everybody be a hip, cool bad-ass with a heart of stone and feelings of iron, and it's silly to expect that people shouldn't be bothered by the things you yourself aren't bothered by. The world isn't solipsistic.

  • Aww, I was just trying to think up how to make it awesome for the newbie inside the shrine. I mean, what an adventure!
Posted 12 months ago by Jennyanydots Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Jenny, I didn't think Djabrill was talking to you - I might be wrong of course.  But I personally thought your comment was fine and not being dismissive of what people were saying in a making-fun kind of way as I took Djabrill's comment to be referring to.
Posted 12 months ago by diaveborn ♥ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Oh, no, I didn't either, but the overall reaction to the idea seems to be overwhelmingly negative and I was hoping to find a way to make it a win for the newbie as well. We'd have low-level players asking us to be thrown into shrines! heeheehee
Posted 12 months ago by Jennyanydots Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Djabriil: In my experience, when literally every tiny thing in the world, from somebody saying "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas", to the cashier accidentally giving you the wrong change, to somebody on the internet being slightly irritating, is soul-crushingly upsetting to you, it's usually not the world's problem. Guess whose it is?

I guess I'm a sociopath because I get upset about real things rather than fake internet problems. Only people who complain all the time about dropping a piece of candy on the floor have real emotions, and I have to respect their real life problems.

  • I approve of Jennyanydot's suggestion. What about making it become something hilarious with a bunch of bonuses for the one being donated? (Maybe gaining something like a Safety croc dolly to play with later?)

Or perhaps donating AFK players instead? Or, maybe, the other way round?
Posted 12 months ago by KitkatCat Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Effigy:  Respect for anybody's problems or feelings, however different they may be from yours, is sort of a nice way to go about life.

Yes, some people have issues that cause them to be sensitive to a degree that makes their own lives difficult and it can be beneficial for those people to address those issues so that they can deal better with life.  However, that doesn't mean you have to be dismissive of their issues.

Furthermore it's not exactly up to you to determine if someone has those types of issues or not.  One person may not like being donated to a shrine as a new player because they have depression or social anxiety, while another person may just plain prefer to be treated another way, and that's no less valid because you wouldn't care if you were donated to a shrine.

Internet problems aren't less real than non-internet problems just because it's the internet.  Some people like to treat internet interactions as being just as significant, because there are other people behind the words in a forum post or actions of an avatar.  (And some people would like to point out potential problems with an idea, calmly and straightforwardly, without others assuming that it has to be soul-crushing in order to be worth speaking up about.)

I'm glad you're able to not care about certain things (unless that not caring leads you to be mean to others, which, on second thought...) but people who do care do not deserve your mockery.

  • The problem with this suggestion is that lower-level players are just getting their feet wet and learning the ropes and any gameplay option that requires them to be "sacrificed to a shrine" is likely to rub a lot of them the wrong way.

It would be requiring the lower-level player to be well-informed enough after (if level 5) probably less than a week of real-time play to willingly buy into a roleplay activity that ultimately benefits you most.

It may be harmless, it may ultimately be fun afterwards, but a n00b has no way of knowing any of that beforehand; s/he just knows that someone with more experience playing the game is proposing tossing them into a shrine to be sacrificed to some rather Lovecraftian Giant.

Honestly, as you are busily getting new quests and learning about how Glitch works and generally bumbling around as a new player...would that be a fun experience for you? I suspect it would feel a lot like someone with more power and experience taking advantage of The New Guy to get some kind of bonus...because, really, that is exactly what would be happening.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the creativity that went into the idea and I am not suggesting there was any malice intended whatsoever, but do try to remember what it was like being new, and try to remember that the whole "mythology" of Glitch is a bit opaque at first (what is this Rook business?, et cetera).

(P.S. Tayyib, we are roughly the same level, and I am aware that I have skills and abilities that new folks don't have and I bet you are, too; it is easy to forget, though, if you don't mentor a lot of lower levels and thus get reminded of things like, for example, that they have hurdles like having to buy butterfly lotion before they can massage...just to get one or two milks from a skittish butterfly. It's tougher being a noob than we sometimes remember.)

  • +1 to the AFK motion
+1 to making the shrine experience the most awsomeness.

There is a LOT going on with young glitches and the leveling up is soo fast. Perhaps instead it should be a glitch on level 17-22 or similar. I know that I was in a level-up slump around there, and it would have been awesome!
This way it would also eliminate the possible grief.

  • I quite like this idea, but I've got a few little improvements:

    1. Anyone can be sacrificed by consuming a "Dangerous Decoy" or some such object.
    2. "Dangerous Decoys" can be disguised to look like any other item.
    3. With the first tier of the "Sacrifice Skill", players can disguise DDs as objects most people wouldn't be too interested in, such as grain. As your Skill increases you can disguise them as better objects, like emblems.
    4. Also, a higher "Sacrifice Skill" will give you an increased chance to detect a DD before you consume it.
    5. The sacrificed player ends up, not in Hell, but in the bowels of the Shrine into which they were cast. They then have to climb out of the shrine (via a fun platforming segment) allowing them to pick up cool items (that other players have recently tossed into the Shrine) along the way.

  • Only one tiny little problem with tossing AFKers into a shrine: If they are truly AFK, and there is something awesome to see inside the shrine the minute they get tipped in, well, they are not going to experience it because, um, they are AFK while it is all going on. :D

  • I will totally kidnap sleeping 60s. What sort of bait do they like? Can I store them in my cabinet like Ilmenskie Jones, or are they shrine-only items? Do I get anything from tossing 'em in, or is it just the thrill of the hunt? And OMG, does this mean we can have... shrine parties?

  • I still really, really hate the idea of hazing new players.

However, a small level player pranking  a  level 60 (over 50 even) could be fun.  An item, a liqourice juju perhaps, could be popped into their bag, and this sends them to an instanced space (another location, instanced, which you can only be reached this way) and requires something fairly grinding to get out of. Similar to Hell but more grinding (Hells too easy to get of). Mining your way out perhaps?

A high level player would understand the pranking, and know of it before it ever happened to them

But bullying, and that is what the original suggestions is, of low level players is wrong. Just wrong.

  • @jennyanydots - you're fine, it wasn't you (sorry to give you that idea); it was the super-dismissive way Effigy decided anybody who isn't into it is automatically whining, apparently.
I don't think I woulda cared if somebody had done that to me when I started, but I can see how it might be taken the wrong way (see all the 'theft' threads in General). I think it'd be better if lower-level players did it to upper-level players; I don't think as many people would crowd up the forums with complaints of griefing and a lot less butthurt would result. Just a thought.

  • Traditionally the virgin and her family received GREAT status from being selected to be sacrificed.   Sooooo.....

The sacrifice should occur Ur-monthly, with great pomp and lots of drumming.

The sacrificed should be selected from voluntary applicants who have never done no-no.

The sacrificed goes to paradise and levels 7 levels.  They return wearing special shimmering garments, or whatever.

Obviously, TS needs to put in a volcano somewhere.

  • It seems difficult to mold this into something that wouldn't be used for griefing. And certainly it would be a shame to scare off new players.

But it's really fun to go on about how it could work... Maybe hog-tieing people when are crashing from no-no or post-purple? That seems to be when glitches are most vulnerable...

  • This was pretty much how I was introduced to the game. An informal greeter came to me, took me to get my papers, gave me money to buy a house, suggested a good house to buy (which turned out to be a dive) fed me no no, laughed hysterically as he watched me panic and die, then made fun of my distress at being in hell. All the while I'm thinking how stupid I am for not taking my own real life advice about taking things from strangers. I ended up with a free house (which I promptly sold for a ton of cash), an awesome friend (who others think is a dick) and a different perspective on game play. It's all good but could have ended far differently.

  • Adding to jennyanydots' idea, what if it was a quest for the new player instead of the higher level? It could be called "Enter a Shrine" and the newbie would have to find someone who could donate them. The inside of the shrine, like Jenny said, could be super awesome. I'm thinking something like that "Rainbow Run" place. I've seen that many new players are shy to ask for help, and so if asking someone to donate them got them an awesome trip into happyshrineland, that might give the right idea. And it could give the high level xp too if they weren't maxed out.
