the "nibble nibble nibble" feels a little too literal and humany for Glitch.
I always keep the music and effects on but I'm not sure how long I will want to hear those same sounds repeated over and over and over when I go out specifically to gather meat from pigs. I know I'll be able to turn effects off, but hate to since there are so many great sounds. I'll keep effects up for now and see how my ears adjust or not.
ETA: As Lilith points out above, it is confusing because when I squeeze a Chicken I don't hear "Squeeze Squeeze Squeeze" (nor do I want to) but when nibbling a Pig it seems I am now saying "nibble nibble nibble". Perhaps a more pig-like noise could go here if we have to have a sound at all.
Due to overwhelming un-popularity, the Nibble sound is gone! Also there is a generic sound for harvesting until our beloved engineers can fiddle with it for me. Maybe making different sounds for the different trees is a good idea... but what in Giants' names would they all sound like?
Thanks for the update Danny! Okay, the pig patting/slapping sound is pretty funny...and it sounds like how I might pet a pig. The happy grunt instead of nibblenibblenibble is definitely better.
Hmmm, harvesting thoughts...
I think the end plucking sound that you had would work with bubble trees.
Maybe rustling for paper?
A 'bing' for the cherries?
Maracas for the allspice?
Egg cracking for the egg plant?
The chopping still works for the wood...
Hmmm, not sure I want to touch the sound for beans and gas... ;)
Oh, wow, there are other sounds too...must go investigate further!
Thank you, D-d-d-danny and the Devs! (Now I have Elton John running through my head...)
Sometimes being a beta player can be utterly awesome. It's such a great feeling to know our opinions and reactions are being taken seriously.
As far as the trees, here's what I'd suggest: Spice would be a rustling, rattley sound (peppercorns and dry leaves). Cherries would absolutely have to be the "pop." Wood is fine the way it is. Paper, the sound of pages being ruffled in a book. Bubbles, a similar noise to the bubble tuner. The eggs could be something like a twisted balloon. Beans would be like beans being dropped into an empty iron pot, tink tink tink. Gas could be like air escaping from a balloon. (Bwahaha, just saw Beach Bum's suggestion for "bing" for the cherries... that might even be funnier than the pop!)
I love the petting and feeding noises, but I'm finding the current nibbling noise to be very grating. It's squeaky and kind of annoying, especially after hearing it tens of times in a row. Perhaps something softer and more subtle for nibbling? Everything else is great!
Thank you for integrating new sounds. ^_^
The current nibbling sound is an improvement over the first one, but perhaps the grunting noise can be a bit more realistic. Right now, it sounds too electronic, like a grunt through auto-tune. Perhaps something similar to the snorting sound that was heard at the end of the first petting sound can be used.
The pig-petting sound is a bit too thwappy for me and my mind goes to bad places. But perhaps that's just me...ok, after reading the rest of the posts, I guess it's just me. Sigh.
Oh, so much noise, I'm not sure what to think of it all or how long it's going to take me to adjust - but I'll give it a go! I'm curious as to what the nibble 'did' sound like.
Gas could be a hiss sound, like a radiator or a tea kettle before it starts to whistle. Spice, just a shaking sound. Eggs could make a plopping sound, like when you put your finger inside your cheek a little ways and make that sound. Not the full-on cheek-popping sound, though. I mean a subtle cheek-pop.
What? There's such a thing as a subtle cheek-pop.
If you put duct tape* over someone's mouth and have her or him say the "nibblenibblenibble" in a panicked sort of way, that would pretty much be the perfect kidnapping sound. No I'm not fixated on the kidnapping sound.
*Oh all right, a hand over the mouth would probably work, too.
Edited to add:
@muffin: You're not alone. I went directly to meat-slapping, also.
Oh no, the new pig sound reminds me of a heavy shot glass with uneven circular casting marks on the heavy base being slowly pushed across a plate glass table top slightly contaminated with sticky food residue, could you not go for a vocalisation of the squeee text with the tonal resonance and timbre of a 1950's laughing cartoon mule - it is meant to be a happy and slightly out of control sound after all, just imagine the live in tickle monster.
thank you so much for listening to us glitches and changing the nibble noise.
much much much much much appreciated.
as for the possible tree noises..
Wood tree: present chopping noise
Cherry tree: ping!
Gas tree: fart!
Bubble Tree: pop!
Paper Tree: flip! (like through a flip book)
Spice Tree: gong!
Bean Tree: meow! (it makes sense to me)
Egg Tree: flumph! (like the sound of money at the bank being sucked up a tube)
I hate to be the perpetual nay-sayer, but even the reduced piggie sounds are still aggravating. At least the chickens only squawk once per interaction. If you use the keyboard the way I do, rapidly pet-pet-nibble-nibble, the sounds pile-up and overlap.
A little soft piggie giggle, ONE teeny little quiet giggle, per pet & nibble transaction, might be tolerable. The slap-grunt is just... ick.
ETA: And the tree "poink" gets very same-same tedious after the twentieth tree on a spice run. Thank goodness crop & herb patches don't make a harvesting sound too. I'm begging for very quiet, very unobtrusive sounds here. Or maybe some kind of dashboard affordance to selectively turn off sound effects.
This is hilarious. I have a border collie who fears all other animals, except the pigs next door, whom he loves and adores. So now every time I interact with a piggy, the dog comes in to see where the pig is.
<3
Pascale - I like what you said about being able to selectively disable some sounds! It would be nice to still be able to hear the super harvest sound and the crafting sounds without having to hear the new piggy sounds five million times per game day XD
Yeah, I was thinking that the piggy petting noises were more appropriate as chicken choking sounds myself... though I have to admit it does sound like a hand slapping meat, so it is a pretty decent sound as far as that goes.
The tree harvest sounds are a little odd when you do paper trees. Each page makes its own sound. I suppose if they were nice rustlings or crinklings it'd seem better.
And I definitely support an extra slider. I would love to be able to only have chat alerts as an option. Especially so I don't have to listen to that game show wheel. That gets stuck in your head in a really annoying way. I cringe a little when I get given a game show ticket.
I find repetitive sounds a bit annoying (though they are cute). I will have to mute sounds, but I am going to miss some notifications (i.e. receiving an item from somebody, chat message etc). Sorry Devs, I know you can’t please everyone. Maybe additional volume sliders would help (more load on the program though).
I'd hazard a suggestion that any "jarring" aspect from new noises will go away in a little while, for those of you unhappy with them. Just need to get used to them?
Doesn't solve the multi-nibble/pet overlap of course.
The grunt that the Piggies make when you nibble them now resembles an annoyingly bad fitting cupboard door. Like a cross between a short squeeeeeaaaak of a scary door and Chewbacca.
Not good.
I like the petting sound though.
I'm liking the idea of having different sounds for all the tree's though.
I'm with Beach Bum....
I think the end plucking sound that you had would work with bubble trees.
Maybe rustling for paper?
A 'bing' for the cherries?
Maracas for the allspice?
Egg cracking for the egg plant?
The chopping still works for the wood...
I actually liked the nibble nibble nibble sound. Also, I miss the popping sound when you harvest. Change is hard, but this is even harder when there's not enough time to adjust to it. I think it might have been too soon to make more changes. I'm a little bit discontent about the short amount of time given to test out the new sound. Sure, it seems like the majority of people who posted in this thread were against the nibble sound, what about the rest of the players who seldom check the forums? There has to be a better way to get feedback than basing on the opinions of a few players.
Also, I disagree that the nibble nibble nibble soundbite sounds human. Look, if you're going to have issues with that, don't nibble the pigs. This all goes back to people who protest about nibbling pigs and how inhumane it is. Dude, it's a game! If it's against your beliefs and you don't eat meat in real life, just pet or feed the piggies. Don't ruin it for everyone else.
lala--I suspect they looked at more than just forum posts before changing some of the new sounds. There were a ton of individual status updates about this, and global chat had a lot of comments as well. Of course, this won't have captured the opinions of many glitchen who may not use *any* of these methods of communication, but I do think that "nibblegate", as someone in global called it, was influenced by feedback through several channels.
Just heard the change from the nibble nibble to the oink. It's not quite as annoying but I have to question why TS found the need to change the noises at all? The game didn't need to be any cuter. It really seems like unnecessary dressing. Sorry to sound like a miser or a grump! lol It's just a harvest pigs all day.
It's too bad the sounds are so repetitive and frequent; they just force to me to play with mute on. This is definitely an area where some creativity would be beneficial, it's hard to find something cute that doesn't just get annoying after hearing it the thousandth time.
My suggestion would be to have a random chance to play each sound, which decreases the more often you do that activity. This chance starts at 1 and decreases towards a limit of 0, perhaps with a log or exponential curve.
lala - I don't think the issues people are having with the sounds are derived from a moral stance against piggy nibbling. If you read the comments, many of those complaining about the sounds are glitchen who like to nibble many piggies en masse. The problem with the "nibblenibblenibble" sounding too human was that it's incongruous with a game world where there are no humans. The biggest issue, with either of the nibbling sounds, is that those of us who make our living by nibbling have to hear them a kajillion times each game day, and they get very grating. That's why people are suggesting being able to selectively disable the piggy sounds.
I find the tree harvesting sound too jarring and, after a supply run, too repetitive. I think I'm going to have to agree with everybody who does not like the new layer of repetition.
Ahh you know I was just harvesting and agree with Quoise, I have the glitch music playing quietly in background which is relaxing for those of us who like to come on here for hours to relax and potter around. Then I do a harvest run (on spice like now for instance) and I get ting, ting, ting, ting...you'll have to imagine the other 40 times..it is most definitely jarring to my ears at least not relaxing in the slightest to me now.
Can we not just get a built in option that will allow player to:
turn off piggy nibbles and turn off tree noise? I appreciate that other players may like the sounds but for those of us that don't would be nice to have an off switch without losing the other sound aspects of the game.
Oh man, sounds are tough. People have such emotional reactions to them! I know our fearless leader, Stoot, faces this day in and day out with every new decision TS makes, and I have no idea how he does it.
Sounds haven't been approached in Glitch with much methodology, and there will be an effort to remedy some of this in the name of goodness and consistency before the next launch. It's not a huge priority given all we have on our plate, and it really comes down to available engineer time -- but there will be some new sounds for old items trickling in the next few weeks.
It's these actions that some of you have been doing silently for over two years that are the toughest. I have no doubt that if we took a sound that you’ve been hearing since the day you started playing Glitch, and introduced it for the first time today, we'd get a batch of people requesting special mute buttons for that particular sound.
I find with sound and music a lot of strong reaction is to change itself. For instance, when I show a rough demo of a tune to somebody, and they like it – when I bring them the finished version, almost invariably they will tell me that they liked the first version better. It doesn’t matter if I replaced an out-of-tune guitar with an in-tune one, or didn’t bother to mix the drums for the demo – they had already formed an emotional relationship with that first version they heard.
That isn’t to say that some of these new sounds didn’t suck! It's really hard to tell how sounds will work until they are implemented, and unfortunately many of you were hearing these in action before I had a chance to try them out. We will test the next batch first!
I think the harvest sound would have stood a better chance if it was in sync, but it sparked some great suggestions for trees (Beans Obviously, Lilith, Sirintist, and Beach Bum)! I wouldn't have anticipated the strong reaction to "nibblenibblenibble" (I thought it was hilarious), but that is what your feedback is great for! [those of that liked it, I’m just as sad as you are, but we were a minority!] I think the absurd sounds along the lines of what 'Beans, Obviously' was suggesting will be easier to slip in with newer features ;).
Rest assured that revisions to Butterfly sounds have already been made, that will be waaaay safer than what was initially planned. :D
We've always longed to have sound be more dynamic in the game, but there is unlikely to be an overhaul in the very near future. Much of the sound was designed around the fact that the animations loop, hence a lot of repetition, and we'll try and avoid this more. I'm kind of surprised that many of the old tool sounds haven't already driven most of you nuts. . Also, great suggestion from Janitch to decrease frequency of sounds depending on frequency of actions (so that if your nibbling for an hour straight, you start to hear it less).
Once again, thank you for the many thoughtful suggestions (Benzyl’s is a favourite!).
Why so quick to take it down? I have to mute most of the time and never got a chance to hear it for myself. I'm sure it was fine, but squeaky wheel once again gets the grease - not necessarily the sensible quiet wheel.
I don't like how the music between harvesting trees is the same as the music you get when somebody gives you something.
I've, and possibly most other people, have gotten used to it as somebody giving something to you, and some other things. If you're in another tab, you'll switch over. Also, with the image going to your inventory just like the giving thing animation, it's way too confusing.
Normally, I adjust, but I just don't like this one thing.
