"Whoa! You're learning super fast."

Not sure if I'm asking something that's completely obvious, or alternatively that hasn't yet been figured out, but I'll give it a go!

Right now (BLV, sigh), my pet rock is telling me that "Whoa! You're learning super fast. Keep in mind, if you switch skills you'll lose your super speed."

That's because I went to a shrine and donated stuff and then spent the favour, with a message telling me that however-long had been deducted from my learning time.

In a short while, the in-game day will roll around to tomorrow. When that happens, if I go back to my Skills page, I'll no longer get that message, or have my little pet rock working quite so furiously away: it'll just go back to normal, and if I want to make him sweat again, I have to donate-and-spend again, with another however-long being deducted from my learning time.

My question: is the super fast, flying beads of sweat thing just an nice bit of flavour, or does it actually change the speed of learning? Is it part of the however-long that I'm told is deducted, or is it in addition? If I don't play all day and then only log on at (say) 11:30pm game time, is it worth my while to donate my daily max, or will it all just get wasted when the new day starts and things slow down again?

Am I over-thinking this?

  • Overthinking, you can knock off up to 50% of your learning time through the shrines. It keeps allowing you to spend favor until you can't spend anymore. I maybe don't understand your situation, but if this information relates: all the new game day does is reset your donation cap for that game day back to 0, allowing you to make more donations that you intend to spend on learning speed. Keep in mind the longer you wait to speed up learning, the less of a benefit you can get. It's 50% of the original learning time max if you spend enough favor right at the beginning, but if you wait for example until halfway through the learning to speed it up, you can only speed it up 50% of your current remaining learning time (assuming no previous spending), which entails to 25% of the original learning time.

    Math is fun!

  • Doesn't surprise me at all that I've been overthinking, I'm terrible for it.

I've been doing max donations (on average) every other game day, so I'm fairly happy that I've been keeping it up consistently from the beginning.

Just curious about why my pet rock's announcement that he's going super fast goes away every new game-day: it's scary and makes me think that it's actually slowing down. If the message has no relation to actual game mechanics, like you say, maybe I'll raise it as a bug / idea, because I do think it's misleading. At least to people who overthink!

  • Super-fast goes away after the time you've deducted has passed.  Now, this can get confusing, so please do ask if there's anything that isn't clear.

Effectively, when you take time off of a skill, you're moving in to "double time" for that duration.  Let's say you take one hour off of a skill.  For that hour, you're going super-fast/in double time.  Once that hour is over, you're back to regular speed.  This is also why you can never take more than half of the time off of a skill -- you can never go faster than twice the normal speed.  As for your rock's announcement disappearing, it's either a function of the time you play (it's expiring coincidentally at the new day because you spend the same rough amount at the same rough time) or a bug.  There is a known bug where he appears to stop reading if you level while learning a skill, so it might be related to that.  I only really pay attention to whether or not I have the warning on the skills page, personally, so I can't tell you which it is.

  • Oh, I guess cause I'm always at cap I never notice what happens if I didn't cap. Thanks Monkey!

Aha! That makes sense. Thank you!
