Months Later: How do you feel about the teleportation costs?

(I tried to find the original thread where the changes were discussed at the time... but no such luck.)

For those who weren't on yet, Teleportation used to cost a straight 50 energy per jump. This was changed to a percentage of your max energy, so that as you level up, it get more expensive (and of course, each level of Tele. lessens the percentage).

So, we've had plenty of time to get a feel of it. Any thoughts? Has it greatly changed how you use Teleportation? Do you avoid leveling to keep costs down?

  • I've reconsidered tping when my energy is low. It hasn't stopped me most of the time though. I do wish they'd change it back, but that's most likely not going to happen :(

  • At level 37 I really don't pay too much attention to it. I might have a different opinion after the reset when I'm scrambling to pet piggies for food and buy a house.

  • i avoid leveling just to avoid leveling : ]

teleportation costs are fine, and are offset by increasing daily Cock Power™ as one increases in level.

it might still make sense to avoid leveling, but only if you teleport A LOT.

if you teleport so much that you burn through all your Cock Power™ early in the game day, then the increased teleportation costs are better to keep low and offset by food eating.

  • The costs bug me not a whit. Don't feel unduly taxed. I really thing more about whether I'm going to use the ol' mortar and pestle than I do about a teleport or summon.

  • Here's one of the original threads discussing the TP changes: http://beta.glitch.com/forum/general/3798/
(I found it by searching for 'energy capacity')

  • The cost doesn't bother me. Yah, I think twice before teleporting twice in a row, but most of the time there's no need to anyway. It's easy enough to refill my energy after a teleport.

  • Thank you, Varaeth. Man, I tried so many combos of words searching for it!

  • I am so lazy that I teleport at every opportunity and I don't care what it costs. It beats hoofing it.

  • I never noticed any cost for TP. I guess because of the tokens I have.

  • I don't feel the burn, to be honest, but then again I wasn't here when the original cost was active. Sure, I'm not going to jump three places in a row without planning ahead, but I'm okay with that, or using the subway if I'm going to a bunch of places close to one of the exits.

I do kind of wish I had a book of teleport scripts to write in instead of piles of paper clogging up the floor of my house, but that's another topic entirely.

  • I don't mind it much at all.

  • I use tokens mainly, so it doesn't bother me.  I do use the energy ones sometimes, but I am sure going to miss all this TPing about after reset, but then again, it doesn't take long to get the basics back so I can spend spend spend the tokens!:-)

But yes, thinking about it, it would be nice to have only 50 used on an energy TP - agree with Bored; it's not likely to change back though.

  • I don't love it, but I think it's fair.

  • It won't change back. And, it turns out it wasn't so bad ;)

Also, Riverwalker re "I might have a different opinion after the reset when I'm scrambling to pet piggies for food and buy a house." — once you learn Teleportation II, it is actually cheaper at lower levels than it used to be (i.e., it will cost less than 50 to get around).

  • I'm noticing the energy cost less and less. It's true that (in raw numbers) it gets more expensive at higher levels but, after a teleport, I've now got a greater amount of energy left to do other stuff - 80% of 800 is greater than 80% of 300.

Plus as people level up they're probably also learning skills which reduce the energy cost of doing "other stuff" so the remaining energy goes further.

  • I never used it in its former state. I thought it was reasonably priced during this last test.

  • I also don't mine the cost. Once your up there with the levels the currents should be up there to, so it is no hard ship to use :)

  • I don't care. I use a LOT of TP tokens (since I'm only half-dressed, I don't buy as many clothes with credits as some folks ;), but I also TP with energy. And I still level up. You get so much energy at higher levels that it doesn't make that much of a dent even with your level going up. However, of course I'll be more careful after reset!

  • Wait what is this cock power stri is talking about?

I have plenty of tokens but I never use them. I think that as I've advanced in cooking skills and mining skills (which pays the bills, so to speak), it hasn't been so much a problem. Granted, at this level, 50 energy per jump would be amazing, but I can see the fairness in the way it is now and I'm a huge fan of fairness, even if that means I end up paying more. :o

  • Pretty sure stri is referring to the new day energy refill complete with "cock-a-doodle-doo," Cerulean.

  • I think its better this way. Lower levels don't teleport as much anyways since they get so many quests as skill learn time is shorter and many of the quests have them walking around and exploring.

  • i think the days of flat-50 tps were before my time, but even at ~300 a go, it feels balanced to me.

  • I'm a-okay with the energy cost, especially having finished TP V. I cook a lot, so planning to eat an awesome stew when I reach my destination ain't no thing.

  • Seems fine to me. I don't tend to notice the energy loss all that much. I teleport around the place often. Although I should be more careful, last test I teleported to a place just 3 streets away, out of utter lazyness lol

  • I think it's the most fair way, and it doesn't bother me much. I lose 180 energy a teleport, but even so I barely miss it :]

  • I don't mind the costs. And i always have lots of TP scripts in my bags from working on projects so often I'll check first and see if I have one that gets me somewhere close to where I want to be before TPing via energy. However: energy is low + no good scripts = hello token!

  • When you have TP IV or TP V, it's very reasonable...especially for new players.  TCF said it best...use a free script, if you have it, to get you close to where you want to go...or use a token, if you have it...those two options alone save you lots of energy expenditures if you are a project contributor...and I love getting new street scripts for even the most minimal of donations...makes life so much easier!

  • I don't have a problem with the energy costs, although it was much worse before I maxed out on the TP skill (it is cost-prohibitive at lower skill levels). A bigger irritation for me is the teleportation cool-down between teleporting, which didn't exist before. Either way, I walk if the distance is small or I want to gather resources along the way, but teleport great distances every time: I never use the subway, which is great for me because I hate standing there scratching my butt.

  • I teleport if I want to get to a project or get home quickly.  I do make sure I either have enough energy to make it feasible and/or enough food to build it back up quickly.  I use the subway if someplace that I'm going is near a stop.  I walk if it isn't too far.  I use Teleportation tokens.  Love those tokens! :D

  • @shepherd moon - I'm pretty sure the cool down has always been there

  • love love love teleporting.

I think it's only fair that it has a high cost -  you are flinging your particles across space at quite a rate!

  • I'm OK with the energy costs - don't pay much attention to energy and mood as I eat good food and gets tons of xerrsize, and I don't do no-no, drugs, cigs or alcohol. Ain't virtual life grand!?!

  • While I love the ability to set multiple points and to use the map, the only tokens I have are the free ones given to us to test with, which I'm trying to save, and the ones in scripts from street projects, which aren't useful when you have to get to an older area of the game... so I use energy almost every time I teleport, and it gets pretty expensive.  If I have to go home and back to pick up items for a street project, I end up spending about 468 energy.

Food doesn't become more effective as you gain levels, and people with TP5 haven't necessarily learned food-related skills like gardening and animal kinship, so the "it all evens out" idea does not hold water.  While I agree that the game isn't really challenging in most respects, I don't think anyone's actually aiming to make it more annoying, but to me, that's the result of the change.  I don't have to use more energy for tinkering as I level up, so why teleporting?  I also agree that the teleportation cool-down lasts too long, and often defeats the purpose of teleporting.

  • @dopiaza: I'm pretty sure I remember teleporting to a vendor to get stuff for a project, then teleporting immediately back to the project... Does anyone else remember how it used to be? It's always possible I dreamt it...

  • It's entirely possible that you were experiencing a (fun) bug.  :)
Posted 16 months ago by glum pudding Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Hmmm.... maybe the cool-down is just longer now, and was so short before that I barely noticed it? It is pretty long now...
Posted 16 months ago by Shepherdmoon Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I was able to get the TP skills early on, and the TP costs have never been too bad, IMO.  Will file away the rest of the ideas (getting street building scripts and then using my tokens), to conserve energy when necessary.
