zoom zoom

[Follow the new topic for more zoom stuff]

[UPDATE: We're disabling this for the time being. Thanks for helping test!]

Many of you have been enjoying /zoom (if you don't know what it is, don't worry). Now we're testing a more direct way of changing your location's zoom level while you play: your mouse's scroll wheel.

Try rolling your scroll wheel when the mouse cursor is over the viewport (the main game window you play in). If it isn't working, try clicking the viewport (make sure you are not typing in a chat window while doing this).

Laptop users in general: Your trackpad usually has a "gesture" to cause scrolling -- either two fingers swiped up/down at the same time, or one finger on the right side, for instance.

Caveats:
* Every computer and web browser scrolls at different speeds, so please note those if you think it's scrolling too slowly or too quickly.
* OS X Lion users: If you are using "Natural Scrolling" on your trackpad, the direction you scroll may not feel "right" given how the game zooms -- please share your experience, either way!

  • On my magic mouse I can zoom OUT and back to 1, but not IN.

  • Jono: this is a great feature but what's the point of eyeballery if you can zoom? Seems kind of redundant :/

  • I love using .35 for Neva Neva. It lets me see everything without the inherent dizziness factor of Eyeballery. Please don't limit zoom!

  • It seems the scroll to zoom does not work when in decorate mode.  =(

  • I like the zoom feature a lot, and it works smoothly with my scroll wheel.

However, please consider keeping some kind of keyboard option, as the game is generally designed to be keyboard friendly. Also, frequent use of the scroll wheel can contribute to carpal tunnel syndrome.

  • Yeah, i'm on a laptop and it doesnt work so great i can get it to zoom, but it will zoom my actual browser as well, and flickers all funny, so it's touch and go. when i finally got it zoomed out a bit, my browser was zoomed 250% by then... lol

  • I use a trackball. I can scroll webpages by hitting both left & right buttons, then rolling away with the ball. Doesn't work on the game though.

  • Nice!

I like that "normal" zoom is the end of the zoom range. I find it's very easy to nudge the scroll wheel and when I first read the post I was worried that I'd never be able to reset to the standard level of zoom - but works great like this.

I'd also say a little more range would be good.

And as it is, it makes eyeballery a little less useful... so maybe it should eventually be linked to a new skill.

  • Love the scroll-to-zoom, but a wider limit would help a lot (or some command to "show entire street", and integration with snapshots so I can image the whole scene instead of having to do 2-5 snapshots and stitch them together later).

Being able to zoom in (at least to 200%) would be helpful as well, as sometimes that helps with placing things "just so".

  •   i accidentally zoomed earlier and i wasn't sure how i did it.  i have a mac with leopard operating system and i use a wireless mouse with my laptop and it works great.  much easier than having to type zoom and a number i can't remember.  thanks for the handy change.

  • Page Up / Page Down (!)
I didn't vote for mouses or any other animal :p
Or at least keep the /zoom command

  • Zoom has been added to decorate and camera modes.

We will consider a keyboard shortcut -- though many computers don't have page up/down. Perhaps the -/+ keys?

To keep the game world beautiful, we must limit zoom levels so everything stays correctly in view as the Giants imagined them when they were designed. BUT that might mean we can expand the scroll wheel zoom to a larger range.

  • woa! thanks for making that work with the camera mode
    got a freaking 4500x3000 png goodness @zoom 0.2 :] -> Cebarkul
-/+ seems also fine indeed, as mike suggested before!

  • +/- keys sound great, perhaps in conjunction with Ctrl/Cmd if necessary, as that's what's used for page zoom in most browsers.

In terms of zoom range, how about setting the lower limit to whatever fits the narrowest dimension of the street to your window? e.g. on most horizontal streets, 0.6 allows you view the full 1000px height of the street in a maximized (900x600) game window. On vertical streets (like the Drops), it would instead be limited to the width. This would allow us to zoom out as far as possible without being able to see outside the boundaries of the street, which seems to be when display issues start cropping up.

  • Gah! :\
Do you need a lot of server-side computing to output those pics?
I mean, it's an awesome feature to showcase land art and such
Posted 9 months ago by Lemo Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Lx, that's exactly how I was intending to do it.

We need to stay away from things that browsers listen for -- a pure +/- (well, technically = would also mean + since people never hold shift) might work well. As would UI to let you do it with a mouse drag.

  • I never did figure out how to use the zoom..is it still disabled? I use my laptop = mouse pad..I couldn't figure it out..even before when it was /zoom summit  lol .. :-/

  • You would just type /zoom .4 or /zoom 1.5 or whatever in the local chat window.

Not being able to see the blank edges of the windows stops us from retrieving lost items at the edges, which, for me, is a big part of the fun of zoom.

  • For a keyboard option, perhaps "z" and "x" using increments of 0.1 within the available range.

  • agree with scarlett bearsdale - doesn't seem to work with my macbook pro two finger scrolling at all.
