The Realty Listings Have Spoken

Wow!

Check out the realty listings right now...  It looks as if people like the houses that get sunlight  A LOT better than the underground housing.

Too bad we can't have a nice alakol or groddle house with a shimla basement...

  • I think that the houses in the dark should be tweaked to be more attractive, because there's a problem if nearly every house not sold is of the same type.

  • Honestly, I prefer the look of the interior of the Chakra, Jethimadh, etc. houses, it's just the "yards" or exteriors that I don't like as much.

  • My choice to live in Marrakesh has nothing to do with the Meadow itself, just the garden and patches that I have there.

I would MUCH rather live in the swamp, but there's no gardens and only limited patches which will grow only egg plants. As soon as Shimla or Jeth has gardens, I'm moving right away.

That's not to say that I don't like my house's interior, but the asian decor is not why I live there.

  • Maybe if underground houses have a beam of sunlight for one patch or one garden, like a hole in the roof? Would that make the houses more marketable? I feel like the houses shouldn't be tweaked too much because there's a reason why they have that kind of personality, but if no one wants to buy them, something should be changed to make them more marketable.

  • i agree the problem with the dark houses is the lack of patches and garden...  once the upgrades happen i wonder if the dark houses will be the most desirable once upgraded to included gardens and patches?

  • Hopefully they figure something out. I noticed there could be some room to open up some new blocks in Marakesh. I didn't look in Estevan where I used to live. Maybe there are still some blocks they can fill in there as well.

  • Actually, I'm not sure this is a problem, although it's obvious from a look at the listings that right now few want to live out in the bogs.  But I'll argue against being able to add gardens for the long term sake of how the world might work...

At this time, the skill tree is small and it's 'easy' enough to learn all the skills.  I'm about 10 hours away (once the game reopens) from acquiring the entire skill set, which means I've gone broad and can make anything I want for myself in-game with no real need to buy anything unless I just don't feel like taking the time to acquire the raw materials.  So, it really doesn't matter where I live.  I bought in Marrakesh since a friend of mine bought a house there and the garden was convenient for the part of the skill tree that I was on.

But imagine a world where it's almost impossible to go broad but rather one goes deep with a particular skill set.  Where it's simple to specialize in one area, using your currents to acquire that which you don't have the skills to make easily.  In that world, people would choose to live out in the bogs to concentrate on making the things one makes with fireflies, jellies, barnacles, and peat.  There would be more use for barter among players (I can make crystals easily, you can grow spinach easily, I'll trade you) and a different use for auctions other than buying things for projects (because it's easy for me to make crystals and sell them, using the currants to buy food I cannot easily make).

If every house had the ability to make everything (asking for gardens in the bog housing is like asking for fireflies in the meadows housing), then the world would lose something in terms of gameplay in the very long run, I think (if my assumption is correct that at some time, the skills tree won't be as easy to totally own).

So, in the spirit of seeing how much different my life as a Glitch would be, I think when the test opens, I'll sell in Marrakesh and buy out in the bogs, to try just working the flies, barnacles, jellies, peat, etc and see how that feels, as opposed to being a pig/butterfly/chicken/garden tender.  I really want to live in Alakol because that's the most visually appealing area to me, but I can always do that when the game launches (or if my bog experiment ends up sucking).

The biggest reason the bog might suck for me is the sheer difficulty in getting fireflies.  There seems to be an inordinate energy drain (especially if you have to try 7 times to fill a jar because you keep getting 4 flies when you open one), so that would be the reason I'd call it quits on living out in the bogs.  Something about the firefly interaction feels off to me (much like milking butterflies felt off to many), but I guess I'll post that rant in a new topic. ;-)

But I really do like the concept of specialization in-game, rather than everything being the same everywhere throughout the game.

  • Good point zeeberk. Still, I personally am moving out of the bog (as much as I like the look & the space) until they get gardens and/or patches

  • I think this has a lot to do with the looks of the houses.  In the meadows, there are a lot of variations and they houses are very pretty.  Those who like the swampy dark look would probably even take the housing a step further to make it more swampy/gloomy looking.

I still think they could benefit from making more variation on the housing available in the swampy areas.  There could be some houses that are more *magical* looking, because with the fireflies and everything there could be places to live that look like a pretty summer night.

For those that like their gloom and doom, the houses good become even more gloomy.

Idk -- maybe I focus to much on the visual, but its how all the houses look the same and are pretty boring looking that I would never ever live in Jet or Shimla even if I needed the fireflies or barnacles or what have you.

  • I've had similar thoughts, zeeberk.  Though I have to admit that I bought my Marrakesh Meadows log cabin for almost purely aesthetic reasons.  It makes me feel very Bob Ross-y, and that's a good way to be.

  • I've lived in Marrakesh Meadow and Shimla and currently reside in Chakra Phool.
I undestand those who want to bright, pretty, flowery qualities of the Meadows. Personally, all I wanted was an egg plant. I had one of the ones that broke through and accidentally grew in Marrakesh. Knowing I could not have one in the Meadow after reset, I set out to learn to live in a place where I could have one now and in the future.

I loved the architecture of the Shimla houses when they were first introduced. I liked my house there with its ladder and climbing vine because I do love to jump and climb.
When I moved to Phool to be closer to projects at the time, I really shopped. There are more choices than one might think. I believe there are 4 different interiors and even more combinations of what you might find inside (bogs, jellies, fireflies, barnacles, etc.). The realty listings do not do the houses justice though imo. My house has a very unique front porch area like none pictured in the realty listings. If I hadn't literally shopped door-to-door, I would have selected a different house all together.

The "basements" are dark, but have firefly light to enhance them. I carry 20 or so jars at all times. Yes, I am firefly-obsessed.
My pigs, butterflies, and chickens don't seem to mind the peaceful darkness and thrive just fine. The rest of the house is well lit and spacious. Plus, I have cute little...umm...alien fish lol floating in a bowl and I never have to feed them.

All that being said, I love my house and don't like gardening (especially with animals always in the way) anyway, so I don't miss that aspect at all. I get plenty of food from all the egg plants in the swamps, from all my animals, and from friends. Then there are always vendors, street spirits and auctions as well.

Don't knock it 'til you try it. :)

  • I used to live in Marylpole but switched to Jethimadh when I reached level 20.

I must say that I LOVE my house and I would never change it for gardens, patches or sunlight.

Part of the reason I love it, in fact, is because it has no garden. When you reach higher levels currants become very easy to get and hard to spend, and since cooking is time consuming and not very rewarding, higher level players tend to focus more on other stuff (projects, mining, what have you) and buy food or rely on no-no for energy.

I don't even buy elaborate meals, I buy potatoes. They are stack well, they are cheap and efficient. I don't want to grow them on my garden though. It takes a lot of time, you are forced to teleport back to your house periodically to tend them and then buy seeds to replant, its just not worth it.

The houses on the mirch area (shimla, chakra, jethi) are more interesting, the players that live there are usually higher level and there is more space.

  • i think the sunlight houses are cheap :) and most of us who bought those and haven't moved yet are lower level players who needed to tend those patches and plant those trees. and i'm addicted to gardening- not giong to move!

  • Cooking has been changed, so it's much more rewarding now.  Gardening doesn't cost a thing once you have a pig to produce seeds, and yards become self-sustaining agricultural systems with very little effort.  We were told several tests ago that gardens would be added to Shimla Mirch houses, so hopefully that's still in the works.

  • I bought my house in Marylpole because it was the closest looking to a farmhouse that I could find.
Even the "backyard" has a has a farm look to it. Nice and spacey (even has a wooden rail fence as part of the background :D) with 16 garden plots and 5 tree patches.

I'm hoping that when we get to start upgrading our homes that I'll be able to add a "cellar" that will allow me to grow eggplants and that each extra yard will also allow for more critters, garden plots and tree spaces - yes...my glitchy dream for my perfect glitchy home would be a perfectly glitchy farm with lots of different little glitchy farm animals (and other glitchy farm stuffeths) to take care of  :D :D :D

  • Hehe, I think I'll pop in to play devil's advocate just for fun...why not the Heights? :) I LOVE my Tallish Crest home: I get a garden AND a dark patch for my eggplant, plus two regular patches for other trees. Sure it's small...but then I have mining out my front door and it also only cost 2750 (less than most of the Meadows homes). Since the game doesn't have a realistic look, I like having a home that doesn't look like a real house, too. Yay! I love my house! :)

Now if Alakol has interesting features/similar, I admit I'll be tempted ;)

  • The Groddle houses all have distinct characters, meadow houses are twee, forest houses are quirky tree houses and the heights houses are rocky caves. I've not found the same instant characterisation in the bog houses, according to the realty page all the regions have the same style of house although there are varying sizes of houses in the bog lands. I would have loved a cave house with more rooms, bigger garden etc.
I'm in a three roomed Shimla Mirch house now, I like the house, even the basement grotto with its barnacles and fireflies and of course it now has a few pigs and butterflies - but only one chicken! I like my egg tree but would dearly love a bubble tree - even if only as a pot plant!
I had a nice 2 roomer in the same block but I kept getting stuck in the garden (it has attractive rock steps but you have to twist and jump to get out and I'm far too stecky for that lark)

  • The Heights houses are cute!  The only thing that bugs me is outside of the Meadows the houses are not feminine at all if that makes any sense.  I want a cute girly swamp house or mountain house!  Girl it up!
Posted 19 months ago by Laurali Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Rascalmom - agree, the Heights houses are cute.  I had one to start with this test and loved having an egg-plant right in the house.  They are too small for me in the long run though, I love gardening and my animals, so need the space in the Meadows.  Loved the look of the cave kind of thing, if they came bigger with more space would be tempted.

@sgjo - Alakol is my kind of place.  Wide open moors with views to the sea! Wonderful. Plus the houses look as if they are going to be like the Heights, cave sort of thing, which is great as long as they are big enough for all my livestock!  The pics seem to show lots of garden plots which I would like.

edited to say, hope there are some with  more tree patches!

  • Hahahaha...I would dearly love to be able to add a little fishing hole to my backyard...I would definitely never leave home then! (with the exception having going to a vendors to buy the stuff I need that cannot, as of yet, be home-grown)
I did live in a tree house, but my jumping skills are not the best and kept missing my landing and having to try again.
I also lived in a cave house, but my eggplant tree was in the house with me...very claustrophobic feel with it there...and left no room to move around or be able to have my cooking supplies laid out for easy access -  also I kept falling down the hole in my yard while trying to catch my butterflies to milk (before the bubbles for easy access to them appeared) - coordinated I am not :P

  • My first house was in Groddle Forest, and my second in Marekesh Meadows. I loved the second because the decor was totally "me", but I gave it up for a house in Shimla Mirch because, even though it's ugly, it's functional. My favorite thing to work on right now is street projects, and they require a large amount of barnacles and fireflies. Not only do I have some in my home, but I am centrally located in the barnacle/firefly headquarters. Over time, a home that is useful to game-play is more attractive than one that is visually appealing... after awhile even the most beautiful things get boring. Sure, it sucks not having a garden, but it's relatively cheap and easy to buy vegetables... shops don't sell barnacles.

That said, if I see housing open up in Alakol or LX, I will have a very tough choice on my hands... I'll probably buy one just for something different.

  • After reading the posts from the bog dwellers I'm thinking of moving to Mirch during our next session just to try it out. Like a lot of you mentioned, I think I'd miss my garden too much. But I really love the look of the bog houses and as much as I appreciate that each of us has our own likes and dislikes, I'm really surprised to hear so many call the bog houses ugly. I think they're the classiest digs currently offered. I also wonder if the dimmer light might be easier on the eyes. For me the more different the house is from RL the better. I grudgingly left my cave house for Marylpole to get more space and although I like the spaciousness indoors and out, I really miss the convenience to mining the Heights housing offers. Now if the new housing opens up in Alakol, I may have to move twice. Can't wait for the testing to begin! F5, F5, F5

  • They've listed more listings!!

I started in Marrakesh - mostly cause I liked the name of the street and the other housing didn't appeal, but after trying several locations out, I've bough a house in the forest, because I love the forest and I have learned I need to be able to garden at home. I love the public gardening but it's nice to know my potatoes will really be there.

I will very likely move a few times more, at least until we start being able to customize houses. I don't worry about moving any stuff I've left around, I consider that a bonus to the next person moving in (I never let my Yeti out of my sight).  I haven't quite found a spot that has everything I want yet.

  • It has been very fun to try the different housing. Things are changing all the time in this game, so my "don't be attached" has been challenged several times, especially when the location of Shimla changed! The fireflies are very easy to catch in the houses there, and I always get 7 at a time, a full jar. How nice is that?  The three level design is very fun. And yes, there are different types available, you just have to look around at the actual site along with the realty listings.
Pls give us Alakol housing soon! Sounds like there will be lots of competition for places there since many folk have mentioned it in this thread. Being landlocked where I live in RL, a view of the water, even though it's a virtual one, will be awesome. And it's mountains and water besides. Soon, please soon.
