Why not use more player movements? (i.e. petting and watering)

Also, my first instinct in the first tree encounter was to click and drag the water can over the tree. I was disappointed to see I had to hit a menu.
There's a cat game that my little niece likes where you pet a cat using a little "rubbing" motion on the mouse. Would be nice to have that here. Brings more of a tactile quality to a game. Using menus all the time (especially for petting) introduces robot actions into what could be a more organic game.

  • i like the mouse gestures thing.

the massive quantity of menus in the game has always bugged me a little bit too. it's like a thousand tiny walls between the player and the world.

i mean they sort of have to be there because not everything can be a mouse gesture and they are easier to "teach" players how to use than gestures .. but the fewer menus the better.

  • That rubbing motion reminds me of Sims PetSomething for Nintendo DS where everything has to be done by the player with motions.

It's quite nice as it really does, and I'm glad it's possible to pick up things by just dragging them into the inventory. Again though, gestures can be _lovely_, especially if you're going to expand to mobile platforms as well!

  • You can drag a watering can on to a tree to water it (or drag a broken tool on to your tinkertool to repair it; or drag anything to shrine to donate it; or drag food on to a pig to feed it; or drag a pick on to a rock to mine it; or drag ore on to your grinder to grind it; allspice to mill, bubbles to tuner, items to other players, from your pack to the floor or floor to pack, etc.) HOWEVER, none of this is explained very well :)

  • I too would love gestures.. a simple rub to pet a tree, pig, squeeze a chicken, or anything.

  • As long as adding gestures didn't negate the menus - as it is now, you can play almost exclusively by keyboard - which is brilliant for accessibility.

  • Not sure I'd like still more moving pixels, or the potential effect / lag / loading issues on the structure of the game. I'd love to see an update on Operation Screaming Pixels.

  • Thanks stoot. The menu selection was little lengthy for some actions like feed, and dragging definitely helps.

Travinara, this is the second time you referred to the pixel post in recent times :) Now I have no choice but to read it in detail lol. Thanks for referring it, it is indeed an interesting post.

  • Hard to believe it's only been a month since they wrote that, but it really goes a long way to explain many of the 'whys' in the game. The world has grown massively since then.... kinda Super Awesome. That's on the blog at glitch.com.
