I wish that chickens were less negative about incubation

I just got a house and am learning to raise animals...I guess this is somewhat nit-picky but I wish that chickens were less negative about incubation. I especially hate it when they say "I am almost done with this thing."  I was really surprised that they said this and it seems kind of sad somehow.   It just doesn't seem like an appropriate time to be snarky.
It is not the end of the world but I wish they would say something more positive. "This thing" is a new life after all, even if it is imaginary. It should be something to be excited and happy about. Why can't they say something proud or cheery?
I like that the piggies are so cheery about being nibbled. Maybe the chickens are supposed to be more grumpy than the piggies but do they have to be such a buzz kill at what should be a happy occasion?
Maybe I am just spending too much time in the game and I am starting to come unglued!

  • Yeah, the sassy chicks are more fun than negative to me. My feeling is that they attempt to add a personality type to the various things we interact with (ie. piggies are cheerful, froggies are hippy-dippy, bubble trees are paranoid, butterflies are like text-messaging teens, metal rocks are rad heavy metal dudes) and that they just chose to make chickens a little grouchy. I think it's cute.

I don't mean to shoot you down, Bertha, just providing an alternate view :)

  • I'm with anne216 ... the chickens crack me up - especially when they say that it bit their butt.
And, if I could give them all the beers I now owe them, we'd have lots of drunk chickens running around :D

  • I'm with anne216 and shipwreck.

Part of it is this, too.  In real life, hens produce a lot of eggs.  If they are with a rooster, that's a lot of chicks.  After a while, new life isn't so special any more.  It kind of becomes old hat, and for those that ovulate that often, and would rather be out doing other chickeny things rather than sitting on an egg, it's a literal pain in the rear.  I think they're being rather upbeat in light of that.

  • Remember the chickens also threaten an uprising when we squeeze them for grain. I think they are just snarky by nature. :) Just as the bubble trees are conspiracists.

  • Surely you must have friends or acquaintances IRL who are snarky/sarcastic/caustically sharp-witted, but actually good-natured at heart? The kind of person who is almost always joking, but almost never sounds like they are joking...
The uninitiated, and the people who just will never get it, tend to be put off or offended, but everyone else loves them double.

That's the personality-type i believe they were shooting for with chickens. :)

(BTW TinySpeck, when are you going to give us a UI option to have the personality bubble also show up in chat? I miss about 85% of them because i can't read fast enough. ):

  • Piggies are made of bacon and love and chickens are made of hate and grain. Such is the nature of things.  : )

  • Besides, if you have ever talked to someone who was at 9 months and a week pregnant - that is the definition of cranky ;)

  • Try bringing a baby chick to a party. It's even more negative than the chicken. See it as a dry sense of humor....

  • It's not negativity; it's just emotional detachment.  What's wrong with that?  They're just sitting on an egg.

If you'd really prefer the chickens to have more of an emotional investment in their surrogate children before you snatch them away and never come back, you just might be a sociopath.

  • Yes, I know it is silly! I am just such a sucker for babies. Even imaginary chick babies make me smile. :D
I guess I was thinking of the incubating chickens as being sort of like midwives who always seem to have sweet sunny dispositions and gush over new arrivals. Maybe I should start thinking of the incubating chickens as obstetricians in a hurry to get back to the golf course...

  • If chickens were more *clucky* about the eggs they hatch you might have a fight on your hands trying to get the hatchlette off them ;D

  • The chickens have a sarcastic bent to them in general, which I find fun, talking about vague future revenge, but also saying "I don't really mind" and "chase me!"

So, I would just chalk this down to the fact that the chickens have a quirky sense of humor.

  • Chickens are whiners and deserve a slapdown. I'd be content, though, if we could insult them back.

I posted about this in Live Help and was surprised to be taken seriously. My only real concern about them is that they'll form a union and start withholding grain out of spite.

    That's a joke, son.
