Community Kitchens!!!

So there are these community machine rooms. You get a 5% bonus for using those machines. Blocks have no current use in the game other than street projects. Food, on the other hand, people use everyday, all the time, and it has this huge skill tree of stuff for it. Why don't we have community kitchens? Don't even worry about providing equipment, b/c (like blockmaking really) anyone who uses the skill is gonna shell out the currents for the stuff. Just give a 5% bonus for cooking whilst in the room. Maybe allow a greater bonus for co-op cooking, like 10-20% depending on how many are cooking? Maybe have a vendor that sells both produce and grocery.

I'm sure this has been proposed before, I think even by me. But the reason I'm dedicating an entire post to it is that I want to point out why this is such an awesome idea and should be given priority. It's because of what we've just learned from the Ajaya fiasco. Namely that if you attach a significant benefit to an area, people will congregate, and then people will socialize.

Nobody uses the machine rooms because, well, who-the-hell cares about blockmaking other than very advanced players, and even then only when a street project is calling for them. And what could be more boring than a 4 kinds of building blocks, as contrasted with the huge, lovely, constantly expanding array of food available.

Ajaya had an allure for newer players because of the get rich quickness of it. Community Kitchens (maybe in Ix) will approximate that draw without creating the conflict, because there won't be a limited resource to get possessive over.

In sum, I argue that implementing Community Kitchens will take the place of Ajaya Bliss, insofar as it provided a way to excelerate wealth and level accumulation while it fostered team spirit.

Thanks for listening!

  • +1 this is a fun idea! Community kitchens sound like a nice, Glitchy sort of thing. I like the idea of bonuses for cooperative cooking, too.

  • That's a cool idea!
Actually there's already a vendor with both produce and grocery:

The last time I went there, everyone was indeed cooking a lot
But there was no group or co-op feeling at all, so I guess it's needed

  • This would be nice. Maybe attach one to Uncle Friendly's?

  • Ooh, I forgot about Friendly's. Community Kitchen addition to Friendly's!!!!

  • I like this idea... might make me more prone to actually *use* the cooking skills I have rather than just buy food (because cooking bores me to tears at the moment).

  • This would be cute.  When I first read this, I thought that it might be something like a "soup kitchen," which I also think should exist in at least one place in the game.  This could be for people who have less than 1k currants in their bank account to get a stack of free cheap soup or something.

Maybe for every stack of 10 of a recipe, an extra appears in an open-access pantry? Maybe you have to trade one item (meal or ingredient) to the pantry to take something out, or pay quarter-price for the food item you want.

  • Even better: recipes that REQUIRE ingredients be contributed by three or four people. POT LUCK!!!

  • Wow, these are all great ideas!  I especially love the idea of community cooking AND a soup kitchen, possibly combined.  Like, if you were a poor Glitch you could take food from the community stores without contributing, but only if you had less than 1k currants or something.

    Good ideas, all!

  • I love the idea of a community kitchen -- I cook a lot (when I'm not mining like a madwoman), and that sounds like a lot of fun, especially if ingredient-trading was going on, or if you could learn a new recipe or two by participating :)

  • Brilliant, maybe after we have cooked it we could have the choice to donating to the Giants dinner table in the machine room and they give us xp, currants and a score out of 10 on how nice our food is purely random. :)
