Organizing Your Friends

At some point in Glitchen life, you may discover that you have gathered quite a list of friends.

Different friends mean different things to us and we interact with them at different times and places along our journey.  Sometimes doing a review of those friends might be in order.

So I was wondering if it is possible to have a "category" menu/action property for the friend object.  The functionality I am envisaging would be similar to the Google+ implementation.

  • An excellent idea. Also the ability to attach a comment to each friend - visible only to you - would help those with poor memory and / or many friends.

  • I think this is a wonderful idea, would help a lot. Just having 'groups' of friends would be great.

  • Good a place as any to mention this.... I know Glitch is a social game and all but what about the days you just don't want to talk to anyone but you need to feed the piggies or they'll die? How about the option to appear online or offline even when you are in game? That way when you are a grumpy fellow glitch hater you can walk around doing your stuff without biting anyone's head off and when you are the smily social glitchy poo you can talk your friends' ears off.

  • This should be in the Ideas forum.  =)

  • Thanks for the support everyone.

Zany, I originally asked live help if there was a way to ogranize my friends.  They told me to post the idea here (I think).  But if there admin thinks it needs to be moved, then that's fine by me. :)

  • dmdnddgs, definitely a cool idea. It's handy to have all the Ideas threads in one place so they're easier to find (moved it for you this time).

  • Hey Blanky - thx for that.  I'm still coming to grips with this place, but I likey likey more and more :)

  • Hello everyone.  I wish to "bump" this issue.  I do not wish to be critical and seen to know more than the fine development team, however I think there may be something missing in the object model that will not allow my request to implemented the way I was initially thinking.  I have asked a friend of mine in the real world who has some experience of user interaction and he is considering the issue I raised.  I hope he will sign up to express his thoughts, or allow me to share them.  I thought if anyone was considering the request that they may wish to hold off any development until I can better clarify exactly what I was thinking, i.e. user requirements spec.

Thanks again for all the fine work you do :)

  • I mentioned a similar idea awhile back  but no one replied. Good thing dmnddgs mentioned it again.

  • I think I've figured out the missing bits to my original proposal.  I don't know if this idea will fly, it depends on if the Glitch concept is meant to be a closed world or if there can be interaction with other spaces on the net.

I'm still keen that we have friend categories, but I'd like to take it a step further.

Say, for example I might encounter someone in Glitch that I would like to have further interaction with in my spaces outside of Glitch.  At the moment I believe we just exchange information/links through chat messages. which is a bit clumsy and error prone.

Imagine that in your profile you could add links to those net 'spaces' that you use other than Glitch. e.g. email, LinkedIn, Facebook, G+, etc.  Even real life info like phone numbers (though that could be a bit tricky re: privacy issues).

The cool bit would be having control over the visibility of the information that your Glitch friends can see.  For example, you may decide that the category :::close friends::: could see links to your email and blog space, however the :::acquaintance::: category will only see the blog space link.  Even better would be to override visibility at the individual friend level.  For example, someone you met today wishes to share some information with you that you would really like to see, but you have put them in the :::new::: category which has zero visibility to your external information.  So while this friend may be :::new:::, you could initiate an exception to the visibility rules for them at your discretion.  (This should apply in the reverse, too).

It would be great if this "organizing" functionality could operate in the game space and on the Friends page outside.

    Clear as mud?

  • I think I see where you are going with this.

Adding a new contact you just wandered by on the street: Goes into default buddy category / group with no access to your non-glitch links unless you choose to add those to your Glitch profile.

Upgrading default buddy to acquaintance group: People in this group see the TOP LINK (if any) of a list of X links to your external stuff.

Upgrading acquaintance to close friend group: People in this group see ALL LINKS (if any).

When you group friends (Mining Pals, Neighbors, etc.), you choose the level the ENTIRE GROUP is categorized into.

People can be in more than one group, and the higher / closer level friendship setting (if any) overrides all lower level ones.

People on your ignore / block list have no access to your profile at all if/when they click on your Glitch.

    Something like that?
