What belongs here, and what belongs in Announcements?

I am very confused by these forums now. I thought Announcements was for like group invites, party announcements, etc. I am finding threads in Announcements that I really think were meant for discussion, but are being moved over there.  Can you please provide a description of each of the forums, along with what is allowed in General up in a sticky at the top of General for us to read to help ease the confusion?

Thanks!

  • I just popped over to Announcements to see what this was about, and immediately found the from the newbies thread. I don't get it. Why was that one moved? It seems - to my understanding - most appropriate for General.

  • He actually posted it in both forums yesterday. It was not moved. Here is the one from general:

  • I just want an explanation of what goes where, just for clarity.

  • Oh, sweet. Thanks JW! I was perplexed at finding it over there.

  • I think General is for anything that is Glitch-related but is not about ideas/changes to the game, reporting bugs, or about a new group, parties, friend requests, and the like. Just think of it as a catch all other forum. I wish Announcements was used for advertising player-made sites like glitchremote but those topics don't get moved there.

You should keep in mind that a lot of people don't care if they are posting a topic in the right spot or not. They just want people to read and reply. And like JW said, there are people who post the same thing in multiple forums (again, just for replies).

  • I think "Announcements" would have been better labeled "Glitch Social."

  • "I wish Announcements was used for advertising player-made sites like glitchremote but those topics don't get moved there." - But it is. Well, mostly. Mine was, TomC's was, but Glitch Remote wasn't.

I guess what TS wanted is to not have posts like "I'm having a party, who wants to come" with twenty replies going "me!" keep appearing at the top of General because these types of posts invites incessant bumping, but they appear in General anyway.

I don't want to whine (too much), but for four days there was a post in Announcement whose content consists entire of "dot", with three replies describing other fascinating forms of punctuations. It was only removed after I complained in Live Help. kevbob IM'd me telling me that they were busy, and that I should open help cases if I see garbage on the forum. Honestly, I'm not sure why I should bother. If I didn't have a vested interest in visiting that forum everyday, I wouldn't go there at all, because 1. Nobody else does and 2. It's a dump.

  • In my blunt opinion, General is a mess too. I admit I am a tad OCD about forums, having admin-ed and mod-ed several of them.

That is how I feel about off topic, marketplace, announcements pretty much everything but Ideas and General.

  • Shouldn't this thread be in 'Complaints'?
Posted 4 months ago by Sir Mixalatte Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Asking for some direction about how and where to post is not a complaint, Sir. How is asking for some confusion to be cleared up considered complaining?

"In my blunt opinion, General is a mess too. I admit I am a tad OCD about forums, having admin-ed and mod-ed several of them"  OMG Piratice, same here!  I ran forums for a company then for a social site for a combined total of 5 years. Forums are a nightmare to run, but super easy if set up correctly (with a good landing page, then good descriptions for each forum) and at least 1 admin watching over it.

  • Really like this forum category idea: http://www.glitch.com/forum/ideas/25130/

  • When they first introduced the announcements forum, I hoped it would be for staff announcements - that way all staff posts about updates and such would be in one place. Just seems like another General to me.

  • I'm a bit confused about this, too. I'm putting together the next "Where's Bruce?" project and am unsure of whether I should post it here or in the Announcements forum, as it seems to have elements both onetime-announce-y and over-time-gameplay-y.

Okay I know I just totally abused the hyphen there but you know what I mean.

  • IMO Announcements is for anything that a player is telling to other players, about the game (of course), but not about the game itself. If TS announce that there are new Upgrade cards, it is ok in General. if someone complains about the new upgrade cards... it is ok too. but if someone says that they want to meet in X street to talk about the new upgrade cards... that belongs to announcements. then... the Gods and Devs decide case by case...

  • OMG! This right here (found in the FAQ) needs to be an announcement at the top of the forums. Via a link that says "How do I use the forums, what things can be posted? " Taking us to the statement below. THIS is what I was looking for!!! But why, WHY, WHY was it hidden in the FAQ!???  Or better yet, make a landing page for the Forums look like whats below. Each link taking you to the individual forum. PLEASE!
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How do I use the forums, what things can be posted?
So- you want to know something about the forums? This is for you! We have some forum categories for you to use and some guidelines on what to post where, and how to keep discussion beneficial and fun for everyone.

General: This is for general game play discussion, official staff posts, player-written stories or created art, questions about the latest updates from our Glitchlog twitter, player to player tips- you know, things related to playing the game.

    Bugs
: If something seems broken, or not the way you expect, and would be of interest to all players, check here. But please start with the known issues topic at the top of the page to see if what you have a problem with is listed. Also, check the latest posts or search for your issue; it may be posted already. Some things that are specific to your account, like auction items you didn't think you received or you have a billing problem, require a help case to be opened. For general issues, use this form; for billing issues, use this form.

    Announcements
: Do you have a group you want to promote? Some in-game parties or events you want to invite other players to participate in? Have resource routes you want to get new players involved in? Use this forum!

Ideas: Have a suggestion for the game? Post it here! While we can't implement everything, and we have a lot of things in our own development plans which may mirror yours, trump yours, or just not work, don't be disheartened if we can't do it or address every post. We do read them all though!

    Marketplace:
Are you selling something? Want to advertise the hand crafted furniture? Have a million currants burning a hole in your pocket and want to see if there's anything interesting you can buy from someone? This is the forum for you.

Off Topic: If you want to discuss something about your favourite TV show, your last vacation or grooming tips for your Lhasa Apso pups, please use off topic. If you want to see a listing of what topics you have posted in, you can do so in the left sidebar link called My Discussions. We also post latest tweets from our Glitchlog Twitter account in the left sidebar, for recent changes in the game.

    For all topics
, we expect everyone to abide by the Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Everyone should strive to respect others' opinions, even if there is disagreement. In essence, play with respect in the game, and discuss with respect in the forums. Do not call out other players in the Forums for something you may think they have done to you in the game. If you have a beef with a specific player, try to work it out with them with discussion, or by simply walking away from a dispute. Don't bring it to the Forums. If it is a situation in which you think staff need to be involved, in which the Community Guidelines are not being followed, please use our existing tools to communicate that to us in a help case. We reserve the right to moderate conversation in some cases— this may mean closing topics if they are out of hand. So please, keep it respectful.

  • innie, perhaps you were not around, but we had this recently. (JW linked to that FAQ yesterday also. :)

Please also note another post in that thread here; re landing page.
Posted 4 months ago by kevbob Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yes kevbob, that is where I finally found that link. But WHY was the info pertaining to what goes where in the forums hidden down in the FAQ section, and only ever mentioned in some random sentence in a post or two?

And I saw your post. The thing is "we may have a landing page" really needs to become "we will have a landing page".  To keep the forums clean and working in proper order, a main landing page with the info hidden in the FAQ being in everyone's face will help not only us old players who are adjusting to the changing forum landscape, but will newbies know what goes where and help the staff not have to clean so much.

You can close this topic if you want. I moved my thoughts over to ideas where it belongs. Heh, thanks kev.

  • A number of forums I've seen have a "How to use these forums" post pinned at the top of the landing page. Would that be helpful here?

Also, I'd really like to have something that would make it easier to look through staff postings: a separate pane in which these appear, a link under the search box that filters for these, a separate forum section... or something.
