Not at all. I am grateful that this game exists in itself. And for some wonderful, kind people I have met... including the Devs and guides. I love it that I have a safe and awesome way to keep in touch with my family when I am away from them when I am travelling, spending long nights in dorms and hotel rooms. I am quite sure that there is no other experience out there quite like Glitch. No dusty stick or plate of beans can replace all this, for me.
Hey, you get to play an awesome game for free every day and be part of shaping what it becomes in the future through your participation. You are falling prey to the idea that something rare is better than something common. It is simply not true. Any music box has the same intrinsic function (and dare I say, better music...sorry stoot!) as SB-1, just as the common cubimals are ridiculously cute and have the same shot at winning races as the rarest of the rare. If everyone had an SB-1, you'd be dumping it in a shrine with the rest of the music blocks. If you really want to own those rare things, earn some currants and buy them. But if you direct your attention that way, you'll see six blue butterflies dancing around a bubble tree. And look that way at a secret passage from Jethimadh to Ix...have you found it yet? Things like that are the real prizes around here.
For all of the "rare" items, I've always just taken the outlook that if I want it, it will come to me eventually. Happened with GNG, happened with the beta pickle, happened with the philosopher dolls. Sometimes it's luck, sometimes it's hard work..
Maybe if we're patient little glitches and wait until the end of the current beta, just like all the patient little glitches did in beta-the-first, we'll be given a Special Something-Something That All The Patient Little Beta-The-Second Players Get Once The Beta Is Over. Then we can all be special, just like everyone else. Except we're not being so patient, it seems.
The pickles didn't show up until the end of beta-the-first, after everyone was reset. All the beta testers, long-standing and recent arrivals, got the pickle. During beta, there were some yetis floating around, and a handful of other special items--out of thousands of beta players. I.e., there were very few unique items, and it seemed that no one really cared that precious few had these Neat Things (tm), beyond being excited to get a chance to see them.
It stands to reason that if every player is going to get their own Precious Little Beta Snowflake, it will happen after the current beta finishes, as a thank you for putting in our time and testing the game.
actually.. my favouritest item i ever had was the faded heart from the notice the unnoticable quest. i lost it by accidentally donating it to the shrine in a rook attack... i was so sad when i noticed it was gone. and it's hard to remember the forgotten glitch without it! (i wish there was a way to re-do a quest)
i love the fact that there are "rare" items out there, that every time i meet the rube there's the teensiest chance i might get one (!) it's good that things aren't always so easy to get.
i was lucky enough to be in the vicinity of a glitch with a dusty stick when she unleashed the dustbunny. much as i coveted it, i am glad i got to see it in action.
The people who were involved in beta-the-first had a much more trying time than we have had so far. Except for those who had the Lost Items Bug (and they were rightly compensated after it), we haven't had much difficulty at all. At least the game is still up and running! I wasn't in beta-the-first, but I bet it was pretty depressing seeing that "Closed" sign for days on end. D:
Actually I kind of hope that we don't get a Beta-The-Second-Special-Item. I haven't seen any reason yet that we deserve one. My own opinion only. :D
I think some people forget that those of us who got a "fun" pickle and the resulting GNG music block after first beta lost ALL our possessions, xp/levels, and skills learned. I don't think many people would make that trade.
syruss! thank you thank you, that is so kind :) i will IM you next time we are both around.
i think this is proof that actually it's the glitchen themselves who are the rarest of them all. it's things like this that make this place special. i love this world so much. i don't need GNGs and pickles to make it any better :)
So Miel, just to clarify, are you saying that you did NOT get your fun pickle and GNG music block back? It was my understanding that those items were returned when they had been identified as missing. And were you also reset to level 1, with 0 XP and that was NOT restored either? If that is the case, that is very different from what has been said.
What Miel was saying was that those who were in the first beta went through a reset in which they lost all their currants and all their XP. After the reset, they came into the game as a leve 1.
EDIT:
No one had a funpickle or a GNG music block before the reset after the first beta. So those were not "lost" and then "restored" in that reset. The funpickle was given after the reset to those who went through the reset and thus lost all the levels, skills, XP, and currants they have previously gained. When they came back as a Level 1, they found a new item -- the funpickle -- in their inventory. Almost all the *other* items that had been in their inventory previously were gone.
Doesn't bother me in the least. In the real world I don't have tons and tons of things that others have, many of whom have them for "unfair" reasons. A key to happiness in all of life, Glitch or otherwise, is to recognize the beauty and glory of what you have, to see the rain of blessings that falls upon you every day.
This morning when I woke up I could see light through my window, hear music, smell the wonderful scent of the coffee I brewed (that came from thousands of miles away, brewed with electricity sent safely and almost magically to my home), stand on two legs, and had a thousand other things go right for me within an hour of being awake. A couple of things went "wrong", too, but they were statistically meaningless in the big picture, and I chose not to focus on them.
The game would not actually be meaningfully more fun for me if I had any of those things, so nope, doesn't bother me.
Rare things are pretty great, and this game is pretty rare amongst MMO's. Its players, design and execution are all unique. I feel pretty lucky that I stumbled into Glitch between betas and that I get to play for free.
Yeah because the only reason to play the game is to amass boatloads of stuff, the rarer the better, so we can all feel entitled and special. Not. I am with VS on this one. We need special awards for special people so they have absolute proof at all times of their specialness. And so I can recognize them from a long way off and move rapidly in an opposite direction.
Really!? This thread is ONLY for those that feel like steps! All others, go on about your business. This way, WE have something special.
In theory, the thread is for anyone--particularly because you titled the post as an open question to the community.
Sorry if you found my response of "no, I don't feel that way" unwelcome. I was really just answering your question and trying to put a positive spin on not having everything....
Nope, not bothered.
Having free time to play in ever changing Ur feels pretty special to me.
Lots of serious in my world, but this isn't one of them. Thank goodness!
I read the OP's tone as tongue-in-cheek, at least I hope it was.
Really and truly surprised at the fuss the stick caused, it has shown some Glitchen in a new (and not very favourable) light. Entitled, grasping and greedy is not a flattering look on anyone.
I feel very sorry for Kevbob, I hope he is laughing at the ridiculous behaviour and not letting it upset him.
Just so as you know, I have none of the items listed.
@Aurora Dellaterra, there absolutely is a secret passage from Jethimadh to Ix (it only goes one way). It is unmarked and hidden. I won't spoil it for you by sharing the location, except to say that it is not in the Tower.
@Audaria, Splendora explained it well I think, but I will restate. The pickle was a "reward" to those of us who participated in the first beta. At the end of the first beta, our characters were reset. We lost basically everything: currants, xp/levels, achievements/badges, possessions, homes, etc. We began as every other level 1 players, but with a "special item that only beta testers get" (the pickle) in our inventory. I believe there are a few exceptions to the total reset. People who earned Easter Egg trophies and who had the Glitchmas Yeti from alpha testing got to keep those as well. We also got a badge indicating the level we had achieved in first beta, but did not get to keep any other badges.
The pickle, as you know, drops the GNG music block, which is special to beta testers because it plays the song that we all heard before every closure of the game, which was only open for a few days at a time. Many players expressed sadness that when the site was up 24/7 after the reset, they would no longer get to hear the "Good Night Groddle" song. So it was a gift from the devs to us so we could always hear hear the song. It is a very sweet memory and valuable to me for that reason alone. However, to someone who did not participate in the open-close cycle in first beta and did not have the experience of hearing the song as a collective before God turned off the game, it seems far less interesting and desirable. I'm sorry that the existence of GNG is bothering other players so much, though. If you message me in game, I will happily play it for anyone who wants to hear it and doesn't have one of their own.
As of right now I have none of the items that are considered to be really rare, and I don't think I'll have the fortune of owning most of them, let alone getting to hold them and read the new inventory item description.
But when I think about it, it's alright. Other players have played GNG for me before, and I got to hear it broadcast globally when the game was closed for maintenance a little while back. One dev was kind enough to play SB-1 for me after I had randomly bestowed them with random kindness (imagine my surprise at that encounter! xD). I've seen the pickle and the dusty stick, but have never seen the yeti or any of the other really rare items in person.
Would it be neat to one day own some of these items? Sure. But owning them might change the way I played. For example, I'd be terrified of accidentally donating a rare item to a shrine and I'd be paranoid about giving anyone a key if I left the items at home. And with recent events, I don't think I'd want to experience what some did when their items suddenly disappeared.
So, tl;dr version: I'm happy to see what I have seen, and experience what I've experienced, and to have met the people I've met. And someday possibly getting to own one of those rare items will be another rewarding and memorable occasion that I'll look forward to. :)
@Miel: "@Audaria, Splendora explained it well I think, but I will restate. The pickle was a "reward" to those of us who participated in the first beta. At the end of the first beta, our characters were reset. "
I was here for that. I was here for the original beta period. I have my pickle and (finally) my GNG. Since I always knew there was going to be a reset after the original beta (and possibly more than one) I didn't feel bad at all when it happened. Just like I expected there to be bugs, afterall, that is one of the functions of beta testing. As far as " the existence of GNG is bothering other players so much" I don't think that's the case. But maybe you've heard whining about it from your friends.
