When is it not stealing?

I'm asking this question after reading a few posts on here. You drop something and leave the area. You come back and it's gone. Some consider that stealing. Why? You put out a ton of stuff at a party and someone helps themselves to it. Some consider THAT stealing. I'm curious as to know why. Won't the items disappear after a while anyway? I understand if you are standing right next to it, but other times, I don't get it. If you drop something that means you don't find it to be that important right? So whats wrong if someone picks it up afterwards?

  • According to game rules if ANYTHING is dropped on the ground it is fair game and is not stealing. Some people don't think this is fair if they accidentally drop something but that's just personal opinion. Treat others how you want to be treated and don't be hateful.

  • I've actually not heard the term stealing used in situations like these.  It's not technically stealing, no.

I think the issue isn't people taking food at a party, but taking it all and leaving none for others, for example.  Glitch has such an awesome community that I think there is a level of expectation that isn't in a lot of games, that people will hopefully act with respect towards others.  I've seen plenty of times where if people politely explain things like "oh hey, this food was intended to be shared amongst us all" then the person who picked up a lot of food will understand and put it back.  Like, in most games there wouldn't be a buffet-type food pile in the first place, so they just didn't realize.

Technically you could say "well, if you've dropped the food, it doesn't matter to you if one person gets it or many people do" and it doesn't matter to our currant amount but I think it does matter in terms of generosity and community spirit.

  • I wouldn't call the party example stealing, but I would call it rude and poor form. As for someone accidentally dropping something, I wouldn't call that stealing either, just bad luck and kind of rude not to return it if asked nicely.

  • I agree with all of your posts. I think "stealing" is when you drop something accidentally and they won't return it. Or, going into someone's house and taking something. Taking all of the decorations off a street is not stealing, just rude. Especially when the decorations are worth about 1c each. Unfortunately, these are things the devs deem social atmosphere.

  • The party example, isn't stealing, if something is dropped, anyone can take it, at a party a lot of people purposely drop things, because it's a party, if someone picks it up it's not stealing, dropping something accidentally, it's just bad luck, you should be able to get it back anyway.

  • Technically if you drop something, even accidently, it's not stealing either.  It definitely pays to watch your bags and to make space when they start getting full.

Perhaps it would be nice of the devs to give us more items like lanterns or Gnomes, which are locked to our doorsteps, but I think that when we decorate things like trees we should probably get as much happiness as we can out of the first placing (perhaps learning eyeballery and taking a picture to preserve the memory).

Miss P: I believe for any item that is dropped from your bags, there's a period of time that it's locked to you as long as you're standing next to it.  I think it may be for items that were already present in your bag (not like mining rocks with an already full bag; I think the chunks bypass the bag altogether).

  • If your making space in your bag, you should do it in your house like my friend does, my friend has a Chamuc Chance Mansion so he just drops things in his house when needed!

  • Stealing in this game is impossible since the only things which are "yours" are in your inventory; no one can access your inventory but you.

  • I guess a good way to define stealing would be when somebody leaves something on the ground for whatever reason and another person picks it up without asking and then is asked by the person who placed the item there if they could please have it back because it was not their intent to give the item away and the person then refuses to.

Don't get me wrong, they aren't breaking the rules by taking the item, it's just morally wrong. It's just like how lying isn't against game rules but still remains morally objectionable.

  • If someone came to my real life party and immediately started putting all the food in their pockets and going face first into the cake, I'd probably laugh about it for a while. Then I wouldn't invite them to my next party.

  • When you think it isn't stealing, then it isn't.

  • Word to Anaglyph! *laughs* I think people fall back too easily on, "But it's not technically stealing!" in their attempt to ignore that hoovering up every food and drink item at a party or other social gathering is rude. (Auctioning them off afterwards is extra-specially rude.)

Walking off with something a fellow Glitch accidentally gave you because you're standing in front of the shrine is rude.

Acting like a jerk is perfectly within the rules, and within the Community Guidelines. But you're still a jerk, and yelling about your hurt feelings when someone calls you a jerk is just painfully meta.

  • I understand the party thing. I totally agree that it's rude to take everything there. But from personal experience I have come across "art projects" when I have walked around. There would be a note saying something like "please leave this here. It's pretty". Then hours later I will go to the forum and someone is complaining that someone stole it. I havent touched these mind you, but when is it ok to take that? Btw this also goes for parties that I've been to recently. I have learned not to touch anything in a peculiar pattern so that I don't hurt people's feelings.

  • A couple points:

Won't the items disappear after a while anyway?
No, nothing disappears in this game unless it is sold to a vendor or donated to a shrine.  The exception is 'notes' which have a lifetime that is determined by people interacting with them.

    Dropping items to organize.
If you use the verb  'drop' to remove something from your inventory, it remains locked to you until you move.  As long as you don't move, no one else can pick up that item.

Once you have moved away, anyone can pick up the item.  If you can pick up the item, you are not breaking any rules if you keep it.

It is only your own personal moral code that will help you define what "stealing" is.  Other people may define it differently.

  • Really the only time I would consider someone stealing is if you let someone in your house and they just start picking up everything you have laying on the ground.

With that being said, if you let someone in your house and you don't think that there is the slightest chance someone would steal from you, then you probably need to be taught a lesson. :p

  • chances are very, very good that if i have put something on the ground, i expect it to be taken up. it is a gift.

these days since i'm moving a lot of inventory every so many streets i get a harvest bonus that gets dropped, and while i may prefer you not pick that up if i'm trying to make room for it, it is not a rules violation if you take it.

generally i assume that people standing at shrines and vendors should politely be given leave to use the ground for reorganizing, and that miners who have sprung a leak should be afforded the same courtesy.

if i come into an area and it is unclear to me whether a desirable dropped item is fair game, i simply ask.

today i was up on groddle heights and some little person swooped in to take something i had dropped on purpose and ran away, very very fast. i might have called "stop! thief!" but i was too busy laughing.

sometimes the dropped item is bait. wealthy eccentrics have been known to lurk behind trees and and make lavish gifts to the unsuspecting polite.

  • Not being a wealthy eccentrics, but eccentric non the less, I love dropping items in very strange places to see the different reactions of various glitchees.  It's just a lot of plain old fun, I like it good for you flask.

  • I like dropping stuff for others and 90% of the time that's what I'm doing if you see me in-game dropping items... I'm just laying them out for people to get.  :: shrugs ::

Funny story ~ I was in Ilmenskie dropping stuff like I like doing when someone began running around after me picking up everything and giving it back, thinking I had dropped the stuff all by accident.  XD  After I was done laughing I thanked him and explained what I was doing.  We shared a mighty chuckle over that.

On the other hand, I've had items dropped to me that I wasn't able to snatch in time - things like musicblox and gems that dropped for some reason out of my reach, so I *had* to move to get them and then, being unlocked, others took.  I think you can sometimes tell.. like if someone is mining or petting and an item drops near them - that the stuff was accidentally dropped and to be nice you shouldn't snatch it, unless they leave the street.  =/

  • this is kinda a tough subject...
technically if it is on the ground and you can pick it up, it is fair game...

but as said earlier, picking up everything at a party is in REAL poor taste,
and IF there is some sort of pattern to it, it is a decoration, not necessarily there for you to pick up...

i for one LOVE seeing the randomness of these decorations, and the amount of work that often goes into them is spectacular, just think twice please before trying to pick it all up. It was put there to enrich your environment...
