Heard of GNE? A Brand-New GS Strategy Post!

Before Glitch began, before even (gasp) Flickr began, there was a game called Game Neverending. Similar to Glitch, yet at the same time very different, it was an effort by some of the same people on the Glitch team, led by Stewart Butterfield. There are some GNEers among us today, and Glitch Strategy decided to snag a few for some opinions on the comparison of the two games.

striatic and Eleanor Rigby graciously agreed to answer several questions, which are all available right here! Please, leave your feedback in the comments, & enjoy, consider, contemplate, caress. Well, maybe not caress.

  • There was an another site that had some old GNE items like Philosophy Ph.D's and Condoleeza Rice Action Figures (not on http://www.gnespy.com/), but unfortunately I cannot find it any more.

Edit: it was http://www.bobbleton.net/bounce/archives/000063.html which is actually in the article, my bad!

  • Oh sure, there were ne’er-do-wells and troublemakers in GNE, just as there are in Glitch.  But GNE players didn’t get their knickers in a twist when someone yoinked all the blue paper in City UnderSea, the way Glitch players do when someone poisons all the wood trees in Wickdoon Mood.  They just found a way to playfully cause minor havoc for the troublemakers, maybe by putting a few hundred harpsichords in their treehouse (OK, GNE players, I know that didn’t actually happen, it was just a serving suggestion.)  If the Glitch community can find a way to let people play the way they want, but still enjoy their own gameplay, it will be golden. ~I liked the idea of this.

  • One of the best GNE things as Eleanor says was the community, which occasionally spilled over into real life: we used to have a "HappyThingie" exchange at Christmas where players would send home-made GNE-ish items to each other. I have fond memories of the fishtank I received from Eleanor and scary ones of the insane postage costs I incurred sending a box of mocha squares to New Zealand!

  • bhikku, yeah, whilst I was researching GNE for the overview of the game paragraph, I read so many archives of discussions between the community from when GNE was up. As I said in the article, "It’s hard to believe that only a few months of alpha testing brought so many people together". Very interesting to research!

  • After the one-day reappearance of GNE on 1 April 2008, one of the original testers wrote, "GNE is sort of like our Brigadoon, it appears out of the mists every 100 years or so, if the weather is just *so*."

So right, and such a perfect example of the erudition and playfulness of that community. (And bhikku, I'd meant to mention the Happy Thingie projects, but figured people were likely already tired of all my wordiness, so, thank you!)

Now we wait to see how Glitch unfolds, and what our new experience will be!

  • So glad the post went down well! :)

Any suggestions for other interviews we could do that you would be interested in reading on Glitch Strategy?

  • An interview of the level designers, artists, or any of the staff would be pretty cool.
