favorite giant

I'm not sure if this could be implemented without creating a significant source of conflict, but it might be fun to be able to choose a favorite giant (probably automatically determined by whichever giant you've earned the most favor with) and have some in-game benefit tied to your giant's popularity.  So, you'd be trying to convert others to your "religion" in the name of helping your giant and yourself.

Of course, this all ties into the story of how the giants relate to each other, so this may or may not make sense within this context.  And it also might lead to either everyone pouring into the giant who has the best perceived side benefit or even conflict generated among groups (giantism?).

If the benefit were sort of simple or cosmetic, then hopefully the conflict would be benign and fun.  It would add an element to individuality to each character and it would probably fun to watch in terms of seeing how "society" develops.

On the other hand, it might not be a great idea to introduce a reason for someone to view another player unfavorably.

Anyway, just a thought I got from looking at the leaderboards.

  • Actually, but the graveside markers display the emblems of the giants. I'm not sure what determines which one is shown, though.

  • I think the marker of your grave shows the emblem of the giant you have the most favor with.

Interesting stuff on the introduction of the current grave markers: http://beta.glitch.com/forum/ideas/3467/

ETA: not sure about the favor; I'll check next test :)

  • And as I've stated in multiple other threads, some players, like me, are giant agnostic.  Not actively (ie, donating to shrines) attempting to gain favor with any giant (though we still manage to gain some favor indirectly via actions). Can we get an option to have no giant as a favorite, please?

Oh, and I still have to chuckle @ the OP's comments, as I was thoroughly thrashed early on, that "giants aren't gods"...so, why on earth would you form a religion around them?  I say this sarcastically, because IMO, they are extremely 'godlike' in this game (have shrines, on tombstones, etc), and why I'm giant agnostic. Funny, it's okay to be agnostic in RL, but you can't be here...quite irritating frankly...

  • I'm curious how you acquired and spent all 11 giant emblems.  Is it ok to benefit from giant favor if someone else earns the favor?  Kinda like the Shabbos Goy concept

  • Well, I put religion in quotes, but I see your point about being a giant "atheist".  Maybe below some minimal level of favor, the giants haven't even noticed your existence.  During this time, followers (or maybe something less intense..."fans"? "friends"?) would be prime for lobbying.  You could explain to them why your giant (or no giant) is best.

Just trying to add another layer to the world and a reason to come back and try to accomplish something, when you already have all the skills and money you'd ever need.  And encourage player interaction.  And another "score" to watch for the more gamerly inclined.

Anyway, interesting about the gravestones.  I hadn't noticed that.  I like the idea a lot, particularly the reference to Arlington, where everyone who dies for the same cause gets the same marker, but is still allowed some individuality.  Community, but also freedom.

The atheist symbol at Arlington is pretty cool, by the way.

  • @ Windborn, since you asked, you still acquire favor with the giants even if you don't donate to the 'shrines'...just by actions in the game (completing quests, helping on projects, etc).  It took me until almost 20 to hit the 1000 favor mark for most of the emblems, and since I have resolved that I don't have too much issue with earning passive favor (I finally opted to equate it to doing dumb things that the devil approves of in RL, but I don't actively try to gain his favor).  It's actually sort of extended the game for me, since my skills were on hold until I got those silly emblems...so I'm still working through a bunch of skills that most people at my level did at much earlier levels.   BTW, you also sometimes get emblems for being in the top 5 of projects too.  One of my friends kept trying to give me her emblems, but I didn't want them for the reason you cited above - not going to profit on someone else's favor.

@Biff, I'm actually Christian in RL, which is why I don't play the paying homage to giants game here...and yes, if they were charities, or donation centers vice shrines, I'd then not take as much issue with them being god-like.  However, that was a million posts ago, and they are still shrines, so I just don't donate to them at this point. So, while I believe in a great giant, I don't acknowledge the ones in this game...so I'm giant agnostic here, and wish we could have that as a choice...just give me a big blank tombstone, and I'd be happier...now, I have to work at not dying in game.
