What do you use your house for?

Obviously, I appreciate you've got a number of trees, crops, animals, etc. However, you also get those out in the 'real world'. I'm struggling to understand what I need a house for...

Extra storage seems an obvious one. But I've never run out of storage capacity, and with the increased teleportation charges how easy is it really going to be to keep popping back for that whatever you forgot to take with you?

I've certainly found them a useful place to re-organise your bags, or temporarily drop bags to get the right sized stacks etc. But I can also do this in an out of the way corner of the world without too much risk if I'm careful.

Perhaps I need to get RHK and some more piggies (all mine have died as I just never seem to go home) and take up Croppery again to really appreciate the house. Maybe these new Group Halls will be more useful to me - fingers crossed striatic will let me be in his 'gang'...

  • Quite time.
So I have a machine that won't get stolen.
    Storing all my damn emblems.
Gardening (especially ones that take a long time like 'taters).
    Patches. Love my patches.
My wood tree. Not 100% sure why because I never need planks except for projects and I rarely get to a project when it needs them.
Feeling like I have a home base.

  • A place to regroup. I want to still be in-game but not sleeping on the park bench so to speak. When you're asking, "Now what should I do?"
    Storage
Gardening. When I moved for a (very) short time to Chakra Phool, I felt lost without my garden. Kind of like you, I wasn't sure what I was doing there. The new houses in Alakol are so pretty, roomy and restful. That adds to the appeal of being there.
Sorting. A large cabinet and extra room for all that stuff. Getting it all organized takes time.
    Personal machines
    Trees and Animals
    Balcony jumping!
A place for friends to drop their things while they move.

  • Keeping my Piggies + Butterflies + Chickens all in one place
Being able to use several meat collectors and butterfly milkers. Sometimes when the game opens and I am at work, I am able to quickly sneak into the world and harvest goods from the collectors/milkers and put them up for auction. I do this every few hours so I can earn currants even if I am unable to play full-time.
Planting my own garden and being able to harvest a lot of produce from it. Planting my own trees.
You'd really appreciate the Animal Kinship and Gardening skills once you have a home.
When I have no idea where to go anymore, I go back to my house.
A lot of people host parties in their homes.

  • For some reason (may be silly) I have never liked leaving my Avatar out in the World when I am not playing.  Even in Faunasphere, I never left my Fauna out in the Worlds but made sure I took it home before leaving the game.  In "Glitch" the numbers of Glitches sleeping at signs is increasing.  If it continues, by the time the game goes Live it will be difficult to move around.

I do all of the usual things in my Home: raise animals, grow trees, keep a garden, organize bags and just have some peaceful moments to relax before starting out again.  The only time I will leave my Glitch on the streets unattended is if I have a crash, the phone rings or some emergency comes up.

  • It's easy to create a self-sustaining agricultural system in the yard.  A butterfly, a chicken, and a few pigs provide meat, milk, and grain.  Fill a feeder with the grain, and you don't have to feed the pigs.  If you want to feed them, give them vegetables, examine the plops, and plant the resulting seeds in the garden.  Milk and meat collectors fill up while you're away.  Trees provide cherries, eggs, spice, bubbles, wood, or vapor.

Houses in the swamps provide personal supplies of fireflies, barnacles, and jellisacs, so you don't have to compete or team up with others for these resources.

  • Brib, I am the same. I much rather being at "home" when I am not on and ESPECIALLY between tests (which will be a moot point eventually).

  • Balcony Jumping sounds like the best reason ever to get an Alakol house... :)

Interesting responses. Many of them seem to stem from a feeling of security and a sense of home I think, which is interesting in a game. Especially a game where you don't really exist the moment you log out...

The last few tests I've given up gardening and concentrated on Mining (which I've never really done much of before). Consequently, I've found myself wandering around the mines a lot more, but rarely going 'home'. I toyed with selling the tree house and either going without for a while, or buying an apartment in one of the towers instead - much more compact.

That said, I think the new teleportation costs will greatly reduce the value of a house to a 'younger' player, until they've had time to bring those energy costs down a more manageable level through learning the skills. I suspect they'll all still buy houses as soon as possible though, that urge for somewhere that's safe, secure and ultimately 'ours' is still hard to fight...

  • RealJimBob, yes. It is fascinating the psychological issues involved that don't actually involve gameplay. I like that. The same can be said for clothes and vanity. There is no "reason" to but clothes or even have an interesting looking avatar. None at all. Except that it is cool and gets one to feel more personally involved in the game.

(I love thinking about this stuff.)

  • @RealJimBob a bunch of us did some aerial ballet off the balconies - 2 teams, following one person and then flying through the air, off the balcony high on spinach.  It has to be done at least once :)

  • I think you hit the nail on the head with that last comment, RJB. We all have a nesting instinct, some of us more than others. I just love to have a home, someplace that I can go to rest, regroup, or do some cooking. Sure, I could do that on a street, but I get distracted when people pass by. Our avatars, even tho we know its just pixels, really are a depiction of ourselves, and we tend to do some of the same things in Glitch that we want to do irl. I like to personalize my little home as much as I can, I love the garden/yard. And there's nothing better to store stuff you accumulate.
*Tho!* After this last move, I've decided I'd better thin out that stuff, lol. Three of us got me moved in no time flat and had fun doing it, but I was kinda shocked at how much stuff I had collected.
I love the house I have now, but I know I'll try for that roof garden as soon as I can, and probably move again after that. Its fun to live in different areas, with the different resources nearby. And that house is the one I drool over and dream over, and will never have irl.

  • Yup, I am with the above.  I too especially like to have somewhere where I can be in the game but on my own as such.  Funny really, since I have had a house, I don't often cook etc on the spot outside, I usually 'go home' to do it.  If I want chat to someone, I can use IM but not feel I am ignoring someone who is standing next to me.

Guess, yes, that even though it's a game, my natural instinct is to have a home base of my own.:)

  • I adore having a house, both IRL and in-game, for all the reasons stated above (though I live in Shimla, so I don't have a garden - but I do have an egg tree and a firefly swarm!).

I also have 2 IRL friends who are my "neighbors" - Nanookie and Noqualia.  When the largest-style house on our street opened up, I traded up from the Medium and Noqualia traded into my house from the small style.  She and I had a little moving party - taking my stuff down the street and dumping it at the front door of what was to be my new home, capturing one of my piggies for depositing in my new basement (she even managed to put the hogtied piggy in her cupboard by accident - she thought she had lost it and was quite amused to find it in there...), etc.

In other words, having fun neighbors is an additional inducement to homeownership in game.

  • Before the last reset  I played without a house, partly to see if it could be done, and partly because, I'm not that much of a homebody in-game.
I found that Glitch could be played without home ownership up to a point; some quests require that you plant or tend in your home. I wasn't much bothered. I still have uncompleted quests.

The biggest challenge without a home was inventory management , and as levels increased I found myself having to ditch emblems. I still don't know what to do with the ones I've amassed since I'm a poor collector and rarely remember to take out my treasures and caress, consider and contemplate them.
This time around, I decided to buy in Marypole-- not a fan of the housing style, but at least it was bright.  I was hardly ever there.
As soon as I saw Alakol I knew I wanted a house there; price no object. I find myself standing on the balcony railing, playing music, staring at the view.  It does nothing for my game stats, and makes me happy for surprisingly long periods of time.

  • I almost never visited my own house when I was in Jethimadh, with the rare exception to drop emblems and trophy pieces home.

I had so many gardening and patch quests built up, I went for the large Alakol house and now garden constantly. I used to spend 90% of my time at projects, now only 33%.

I can't wait to start my own project at my home to work on solo, or with a friend. I'd like an infinity pool, hot tub and possibly a grotto on the soon-to-be 4th floor. Or even a private road/path to a friend's house in the same area.

I hope this ability comes soon :)

  • Gardening. I like to garden but don't want to stand over my crops so that they don't get stolen. My new house (one of those fancypants $50k numbers) has quite a few plots.

Trees/tree poisoning. I'm working on the whack job achievements on and off. Rather than run the risk of upsetting people out in the world, I plant/poison/chop at home.

Storage. I'm super anal about my music block collection and like to have them stored in a particular way in the storage shed so I can see what's missing. I'm also a bit of an OCD hoarder of basic necessities, and I'll drop those off when I need bag space for mining sprees or big gardening harvests.

Helping others quest and earn trophies and badges. The test before last, I kept 4 complete sets of music blocks in order on the floor so others could come over and get their trophies. I also kept 5 wood trees so people could do wood tree quests.

Animals. I like to have my own personal flock of about a dozen butterflies, and I like my piggy + meat collector combo.

Alone time. Sometimes I just don't want to compete for resources or run into other players. I'll go to my house, ignore chat, and do my own thing.

  • I missed my garden way more than I thought I would, and I like having a quiet space that is all my own.
I don't put much stuff down in my house - or at least not stuff I'm not willing to lose - I probably won't until we can start customizing or we're out of
    beta.

Not to thread derail - but I've spent a LOT of time in online worlds  -  I've found it fascinating what I need to be comfortable in my avatar. For instance in Second Life I can only spend short amounts of time as a Tiny or otherwise non-human. I have no issues with people who play that way, but it makes me incredibly itchy. Similarly, I really do need a spot that is my very own, it's hugely difficult for me to play homeless - as ridiculous as that may be.

  • I like to have a home.  My avatar always goes there before i sign off. I just wouldn't feel right knowing she was out in thw world.  Since I've had things picked up by other players while I was trying to make room in my inventory to pick it up (gems, rock in the Mines) I appreciate having a home where i can organize my inventory and leave duplicates.  I have, literally TONS of meat and butterfly milk!  And many duplicates of Music Blocks.  I also like to cook at home to get some of the achievements/quests.

  • Hi :)   I don't care who  you are.. if you are heavily involved in a game, eventually you will need more and more and more storage space.  I have been playing games from when we had to connect to the internet through compuserve, etc.  One game was pretty cool.. you belonged to a guild and all guild members shared a hall with a ton of lockers.   YOU WILL ALWAYS NEED MORE STORAGE SPACE.

I also feel all of the reasons mentioned in other posts are important.  I love my home.  It's not huge.. I have a tree house in Pasha Quarters. I start a new test there and end there.  I know where my Glitch is and I know where she will be.

I would love to be cliff side staring at the sea as the sun sets and balcony jumping but I can't afford that so I do tree jumping.  It's still fun :)

  • I will echo most of the sentiments above. I use my house for:
Gardening; Storage; A quiet place to reorganize and think about "what's next"
I am used to my home on Doon even though I long for a fabulous Alakol house.
I don't like to change my wardrobe in the middle of the world so I do that between tests or at home. I also like to return to my home during test breaks if possible. It is also convenient for riding the subway and teleporting to other locations.

  • I honestly don't know why I have a house at all at the moment.
I'm paranoid about leaving stuff in storage cabinets, so I only ever leave bags of junk that I don't ever use or need in there.
The chicken's a pain in the butt, squawking and getting in the way of everything. Same with the garden piggies. I barely use the veg plots and my wood tree keeps dying.
I'm not really going to be sorry to loose it at the reset.

Once the game goes live, I'll stay homeless while saving for one of the 50k houses. Jumping off the roof and on to the balcony and zipping up and down the stairs could entertain me for hours :D    So I guess once I do that, I'll use my house as a gym.

  • I'd agree with the storage benefits, a place to adjust inventory without worry of someone doing a drive by swiping of stuff, a place to have my own food producers, a base of operations, and yes, now balcony jumping...

Since I like to cook, I tend to do it a home since I've found that when I'd cook in the world, sometimes I wasn't paying attention and I'd have food dropping at my feet because I didn't have any more spaces available. Thank goodness no one took the stuff, but I could see how some might.

I still tend to do other skills like grinding, smelting, and the various alchemy ones in my house just so I can store certain items until I need them for projects and such.  I also like to leave excess items in my house - extra rocks, ingots, planks, music blocks, etc.  I like being able to gather things in the world and then bring them back to the house to go through my 'treasures'.

Also, without a house there is no way to see your trophies.  Not that I'm a big trophy person normally, but I do have my favorites and like that I have a place to see them.

Good point on the machines since they were getting taken in the community rooms. I'm not at that level yet, but I plan to do the same thing, set it up in my yard for use by myself and my friends.

And yes, being able to pick your neighbors, and having friends as neighbors...we hope to have some block parties and such...

  • Ebil-You may want to sell your current house then. I believe you get 80% of the cost back.

  • Selling a house now has no benefit after reset.  You won't have any of your currents that you accumulate now.

  • i've had several houses, moving as my game play developed, living close to whatever was my current method of madness. but i haven't enjoyed any of them as much as the alakol house i have now. the whole balcony and view thing is weirdly awesome and pleases me to no end. i worked hard to get that house and it's silly how happy it makes me. the last test was when i really started to reap the benefits of my skill learning and achievement level. so now i am totally living vicariously through my glitch, i throw all my gems all over the house, have firefly jars everywhere for ambiance and cocktails placed here and there showing how giltchophisticate i am. i am more comfortable spending down time at home and have started wearing my pj's and bunny slippers when i am there. - don't laugh!

  • I like having my little garden and my trees. Currently I'm trying to collect the music blocks so I can fulfil the quest where you play every music block to a Crab, so the storage space is good! I've considered dropping my emblems off but I'm not there every game day, so I keep them in a bag on me.

I try and travel home at least every RL day - it wasn't set as my teleportation location (though it's now set as my second location) - just so I can reorganise stuff, and I quite like cooking at home before heading off to the mines.

And I do like my trophy cabinet :)
