Subway: Thoughts

I thought the subway was a great addition to transportation around to world and is wonderfully implemented - the sounds, the animation, all awesome!

Here's how the Subway system works (for people who didn't get in last test, or didn't try it out): You enter the subway station (there's one in Somewhat Sump and Groddle Forest Junction), then to the far right of the station, there is a 'Red Button'. Push it to get one ticket. You are then put on the train, but you have to wait until two others board until it starts moving (there have to be 3 passengers on your train). Once they're on, the train starts moving and lights flash past the window, which stop as you approach the next stop. For a few seconds, have the choice to get off there or not. If not, the train carries on going along to the next station (which at the moment is only 2 stations).

One slight complaint is the fact that it can only hold one group of people and that others cannot get on your train. I'd be kind of cool to meet other people on the subway train as they come on and off. But, well, I guess it's not very scalable.

Oh, and it's super cheap! 50 currants! :O

UPDATE: Video! Wait, wut? No sound on the Youtube version? :( Hmm, I had to upload to TwitVid instead (so definitely don't share the link):

  • The downside is the waiting. I'd prefer it moved off after a couple of minutes no matter how few people were on board.

I'm not too keen on the artwork either. A bit too urban for me.

But it is a fun way to get to the marshes. Looking forward to stations in Groddle Meadow and the Heights.

  • love the artwork, especially inside the train itself.

the animation? awesome. love the flickering window light cast on the floor and the subway sounds. how they match the train movements.

    great stuff.

i hope there will be other styles of subway car and station but this is a great start.

  • It would be nice to have something a bit more imaginative, perhaps more steam punk than NYC.

  • I agree with bluto (though I've never been to NYC so I don't know what the subway looks like) but I think the older London stations and the Art Nouveau ones from Paris would be a good inspiration.

  • I absolutely love the train (I'm a NYer) but also love the idea of a Paris Metro-style entrance somewhere. Also, I have to agree that waiting for people to join is a little irritating.

"I'd be kind of cool to meet other people on the subway train as they come on and off."

That already works. I was riding with someone back and forth and a new third person got on with us for a little while. (Sadly, they were a non communicative yoinker, but thems the breaks.)

  • One thing about the subway: it should cost mood to use it. Anyone who has taken a subway would know, it's a mood killer being in those filthy things with so many annoying/dirty/mentally unstable people.

Maybe the price should be 20-25c and the same in mood.

I don't know about that. I love taking the Glasgow Underground, or Clockwork Orange as we call it. It *always* lifts my mood. :)

  • Waiting will be a nonissue once people can freely get accounts. There doesn't seem to be a wait if the train isn't empty, cuz singles joined mine.

  • @Johnny: Speaking as an annoying, dirty, mentally unstable person, I don't want you sitting next to me either. :-)

  • "It would be nice to have something a bit more imaginative, perhaps more steam punk than NYC."

i think you're confusing "imaginative" with "exotic".

there's a ton of imagination that has gone into the cars, particularly the imaginative way in which the NYC subway ads have been slyly repurposed into a glitchy context.

steampunk isn't really imaginative at all. well, not anymore at least. it is a well established style where all the imagination occurred many years ago and has been re-hashed and recycled for a while now. it is the sort of style which, like most sci-fi and fantasy styles, "signals" being imaginative without actually being spawned from imagination.

  • Well, let's agree to differ then. Having one's suggestions critiqued is rather tiresome.

  • Talking of the mock adverts, these are quite funny. But you know what would also be fun? Daily cartoons linked from the web. It'd be nice to read the latest xkcd while waiting on the train to reach the marshes.

  • A picket pocket pig to be on the watch for might be fun.

  • I agree with bluto about the cartoons, especially xkcd, that would be great. I would also like to see more styles of architecture (which I would think would happen in time) how about the Moscow underground for some stations?

  • More exotic than modern dirty subway, then, please. Something that matches overground a little better.

Although 'exotic' isn't the right word, either, in that case. Something more...native?

Something more earthy, less modern, more Glitch, less Real Urban. Of course, maybe this style matches Glitch Beta...

  • Any subway I can ride and not have to smell at the same time I am fully in favor of. I loved the Glitchian advertisements too.

  • As a lifelong NYC resident, I adore the Glitch subway. Our real subways aren't all shabby either: jalopnik.com/5684329/how-to...

While different stations should probably have different looks to them, just as different areas of the map do, I like the train as it is. The ads are great. I certainly would not want mood to change due to riding.

Off topic: there's a spigot for gum trees listed in the item directory now. (?!!) alpha.glitch.com/items/287/

  • i commuted by subway for a little while. always picked my mood up. i guess it depends on the car, and how much it smells of urine.

anyway.. glum pudding, city hall station is gorgeous.

it is smallish and beautiful, but there are transit terminals around the world that are very large and beautiful.

style aside, a really big, epic transit hub would be great.
Posted 23 months ago by striatic Subscriber! | Permalink
  • A large transit hub in the center of the map would certainly be useful, especially if it were home to vendors and shrines as well. We could maintain it by using our barnacle scrapers to remove spontaneously-occurring gum from the undersides of seats and tables.

I, too, would prefer the "train leaves every two minutes" method of departure to the "train leaves when two other people decide to join you" method, or I'd at least like some way of leaving the train if no one else shows up. While I appreciate the idea of communal effort, I'd rather not starve to death because I chose to play in the middle of the night.

  • I loved the subway - it was well designed and (for the total of 20 minutes that I played that day) it was very, very cool.

I hope that there will be more stops than just the two current ones - I'm thinking a station in each of major areas would be cool, especially if the game grows out to more lands.

I'd also prefer that the train leave on a schedule, with distinct cars (right now, I get the sense that the cars rather disappear once someone exits them), maybe not every two minutes but more like every 10 or so.

Although, if the subway stayed just as it was, too, I'd still be happy - that thing is awesome.

  • Ugh! Time differences be damned! I missed out on the subway's first appearance...
Thanks for the vid and pics though!

  • I love the interior of the subway train car. The moving lights in the background is a nice background.

It would be nice for the train to operate on a set time (e.g. every 5 minutes) or when XX players are waiting, whichever is the soonest.

Another suggestion: A route map or a more obvious indicator inside the subway train would also be nice. When I tried it, I wasn't sure where it was going.

  • I was hoping our public transport would be a little bit more out there.

    A subway seems quite ordinary
