Any tips on how to get away from the deimaginators successfully? I can't figure it out.
just that.

You could use spinach. And keep running without stopping and take running jumps if needed.

Do it slowly, and there is nearly always a second deimaginator on the street, so watch out for that second one! Good luck :)

I've had the most luck with this strategy:
Take a running jump over the first one you see. As you're running away, they "pop" out of the street, then "pop" back in, but there's a delay of 2-3 seconds between pops. When you hear the first "pop" of the Deimaginator disappearing, turn around and face (don't walk, just face) the direction you came from, so that the Deimaginator re-appears somewhere you've already been. When you hear the 2nd "pop" of the Deimaginator re-appearing, turn back around and continue on your way. Repeat as needed until you get to a signpost, then lather, rinse, repeat on the next street (i.e., go back to the beginning of this paragraph).

Stop walking every few seconds to reduce you speed.
Devlogic you do have a dev logic! I never knew that before! You should post iton Glitch Strategy or the wiki.

Well, if you run the imaginator will teleport in front of you, so you must do the following:
1. Jump over the imaginator when you enter a street (be careful so you don't touch him/her/it)
2. Move just slowly enough you can always see it walking behind you (this way it'll never teleport in front of you)
3. Be very, very patient! This method seems like it lasts forever.
4. Don't give in to the urge to harvest/nibble/pick stuff up on the way.
5. (optional) If the route is taking you through very busy streets you can work out a different one. This way the lag won't bother you, but it can be hard to remember your own route under the *pressure*. :D
Good luck!

Have the sound on--they make a noise when they teleport in, so you know when to keep an eye out for them. Then, just jump over them when you see them (I know, easier for some people than others, but practice jumping and eventually you will get good at it). I haven't had to do anything special other than what I mentioned above, and have never been caught... but then again, I've been playing arcade games since I was a kid.
--EDIT: by the way, expand your browser as large as you can to get the widest view of the world.

Go around 5 Planks away from the Deimaginator, and walk like that until you go to a new street. (To get ahead, jump above the Deimaginator.)
And, if you need to go up a cliff, use Spinach. :)
Also, keep your View the largest as possible, like what Shepherd said.

I found that simply walking and not jumping unless absolutely necessary goes a long way. Do listen for the popping sounds and pause when you hear one, just in case there's a deimaginator right in front of you. But definitely avoid jumping since then you're much more likely to accidentally run into a deimaginator.

I'd suggest not attempting the quest unless you've got a very solid internet connection- I attempted Warm & Smuggly on a bad wireless link once, and lagged straight into a deimaginator.

spinach n hairball works well for me
-
Just jump over them it always works for me!

I did the quest a while ago, but every time a Deimaginator rezzed on the street, it made a buzzing sound, very characteristic. By listening for that noise, I got advance warning, which made it possible for even this not-super-skillful gamer to win that diamond.

Lag is a deimaginator's best weapon. Go slow and realize that on a multi-level street you can just hop up and walk on a slightly higher level and the deimaginator won't follow you upwards. That means you can harvest all you want, just not on the ground level of the street. Going slow (and zooming out) gives you the chance to see where they are in front of you and avoid getting stuck under things that prevent you from hopping over them.

This seemed easiest when I was flying by the seat of my pants. Literally! Never walk, jump the entire way, as fast as your Glitchy legs will bounce you.
As TomC mentioned, if it still seems hard, get your hands on some Spinach!

Also, a meditation orb plus the levitation skill is a nice asset here, whenever you can, use levitation and levitate above the deimaginator and keep going like that. It actually works. The infinite levitation (not really a glitch) glitch takes up way too much energy, but if you have energy to spare you can do that too (just get 2 meditation orbs).

Zoom out as far as you can and you'll have a lot more time to plan your attack. Also they can teleport, yeah, but they can't jump. So if you're on a street with a lot of platforms just jump around up there.

how am i lvl 34 and i have no clue what you guys are talking about? all my quests are finished
is this something like the smuggler thing (which i have also yet to encounter)?
-
This is the smuggler thing. Snowpuff, try visiting Kitkaa Carom. You might have some luck in the bottom-right corner of the street.
ETA: here's a list of smuggly places: http://www.glitch.com/forum/general/10528/

I got my first mission in about four months just now and as soon as I signposted to the next street it was waiting for me and I was grabbed in the pause between appearing on the level and movement being possible - how can this task be completed when they are capable of grabbing paralysed targets?
-
I hear you Benzyl. I had the deimaginator show up right outside the door of my old house. Couldn't get out without running smack into him. :( *sigh*
Now I have no idea how I even got the quest in the first place. lol
-
To borrow from Better Off Dead:
"Go that way, really fast. If something gets in your way...turn."
-
Thanks for the link, Aleph. I haven't ever seen a smuggler (been around here for a little over a month), and I've had Genki-baba on East Spice at least a dozen times (I saw from the linked conversation that a lot of these quests start there).
Perhaps the smuggling quests have been put on hold the way the street projects have been?
-
Also, just play zoomed out.

I just did a run during the weekend, so they're still around.
I depend on the noises their "portals" make to get me through. The portals make a noise when they open and again when they close. So if you make it over a demaginator and heard two of those noises, you know it's gone. When you hear the noise again, you know another has arrived on the scene so you need to go slower and not run right up against the edge of the screen. Proceed with caution! But until you hear the noise... RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN!
This works for me at least. However, as has been mentioned above, with lag all bets are off.

I've never successfully completed this quest, because of a bad internet connection.......
