Why do you name animals?

I was wondering.

I sometimes do it, if I just feel creative, or some animal has a name which I find boring. I did realize however, that there seem to be quite a few people out there who feel on a quest to unify every single animal in this world. I just walked through Rasana, and almost every chicken there was called "KFC" and every pig was named "Bacon".

I also realized that other names are quite popular for chicken. Especially "d" or "ddddd", and a few others i forgot.

So: Why do you name animals?

On the street, I mean. Clearly (almost) everybody wants to rename animals in their backyard.

By the way, the people who try to spread one single name through the whole of Ur do realize that they are slightly annoying other people with that, right? If I want to squeeze every chicken in a street, this task is much easier if the names are different, and, on the contrary gets quite confusing, if all have the same name.

I am not complaining about this, and in a way, it is still funny, but I was just wondering, if those people do that especially to annoy others a bit, or if they have different motives.

  • That explains at least one of the mysteries. ;)

    Thanks Richelle.

  • If I name something on the street it's because I went to squeeze/nibble/milk it and clicked the wrong thing, 'Name' in this instance, and I feel bad then if I don't give them a name, since I already opened their name box. It's always unique though, I don't go around naming them all the same thing. Usually just something that pops in my head.

EDIT: oh, though I just remembered that sometimes, when I run into a street with animals that all have the same name, I rename all but one. Because I feel they should have their own identity, and also because I too find it difficult to harvest their wares if they're all named the same.

  • I only rename animals in the wild if they've been named something offensive. It's only happened a couple of times so far, thankfully. :)

  • I don't name them, it gets in the way of  NIBBLING THEM TO DEATH

  • Yeah, I wish "Rename" in the menu was renamed to "Change Name" or "Name again" or "Deedpollify" or, indeed, anything earlier in the alphabet than "Nibble".

Until that day, I shall continue to accidentally rename random piggies "n".

  • Thanks for giving me my daily enlightening moment about the fact that the menu is sorted alphabetically. Never thought of it.

  • If there are tons of animals on a street I'll name them, so I know which ones I've nibbled, as if everything's just 'piggy' and there are 10 of them swarming in one area, it takes forever.
If there's just a couple, I'll leave them as piggy, as nibbling and petting is much quicker (if you're using keyboard) when there's no name, as you don't have to deal with the rename option getting in the way :)
With chickens I don't bother so much, as if I miss a squooze here and there, it's no biggy, as grain's not that important to me.
Butterflies I leave to their own devices. I rarely intentionally interact with them.

Grains suddenly got very important to me, since the Giants imagined distilling.

  • Like others, I rename public piggies only if they are all named the same thing (can't easily tell them apart), are named something like "dddd" which signifies someone goofed, or if their names are grossly misspelled or ungrammatical. I don't make a point of changing unfunny or unoriginal names, though I might if I have a little free time and then encounter a hundred animals all named after the same player (your lack of creativity and/or narcissism are not charming; the Sandbox group quest that asks players to spam-name animals after friends is likewise not one of my faves) or the 400th piggy named "Kevin Bacon" that game day.

I haven't run across many offensive names, though I did share my puzzlement and amusement on the forum when either a humorless vegan or someone playing one in Glitch got fairly heavy-handed and descriptively graphic with the "meat is murder" theme and named approximately 9,000 animals something possibly intended to guilt-trip or gross out other players about their diet of choice.

  • Hahha, I thought Meat is Murder was a reference to The Smiths, so I thought the names were funny.

Goes to show that you never can tell the intention behind some actions.

And it is for that reason I do not take offense of any names of animals... unless it is blatantly offensive, for example anti-semitic or profanity.
Even I have given names that in hindsight might have been considered offensive by some, for example when I started naming piggies after presidential candidates.

If anyone took offense for petting Herman Cain or nibbling MIchelle Bachmann, apologies.

  • Yeah, I didn't bother changing them. I did post a "SERIOUSLY, guys?" thread on the forums. Because...seriously?

  • I renamed a lot of Kevin Bacon pigs back a while ago, because having a bunch of pigs with the same name on a street makes it hard to tell which ones you already nibbled.
Posted 12 months ago by Vocable Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I prefer to edit duplicate piggies' names with successive roman numeral suffixes (i.e. Kevin Bacon I, Kevin Bacon II, Kevin Bacon III, Kevin Bacon IV, etc.)

  • I make so many piggy eggs that I seldom name the ones I hatch and put on streets (basically, I make an effort to populate the streets with piggies to give other Glitchs something to nibble, and it's just too many for me to think up decent names for every one, so I leave it to others' creativity). But I'll occasionally rename names I particularly don't like, like particularly offensive or unimaginative ones. Poorly spelled and/or all lowercase names increase the odds of me renaming them.

  • For those who accidentally open the "name" window:

All you have to do is click the check mark and the window closes, leaving the piggy with its same ol' name.

I find that a lot faster than trying to think up a new name.

  • Windborn, that works if one is paying attention. Like, if I notice I open the rename popup, I just try to hit enter again to name it the same. But sometimes I'm just nibble happy pressing w and enter so some piggies will inevitably end up being named w. On occasion, I'll rename them. Depends on how much time I have.

  • I name them to spread the important message of the wrongs done to Frank Chu and his family.
Posted 12 months ago by Nomi Simple Subscriber! | Permalink
  • um well sometimes I rename them cause someone decided to name all the pigs for example on that street the exact same name. So when I'm trying to nibble/pet them and there are a lot I forget which one I already did since they are all the same name. Really though it only gets confusing if there are many bunched up and your trying to tab between them.

  • My 9 piggies at home are called Ron Swanson, Tammy 0, Tammy 1, Tammy 2, Jean-Ralphio, Eat Moar Chikin, Charlotte, Wilbur and Percy. My 5 chickens are called Eat Less Chikin, Eat Moar Bacon, Chicky Parm, Chicky Chicky and Parm Parm. My 4 butterflies are Butterflee, Flutterby, Flutterbee and Flittyby.

I released a bunch of piggies all over Chakra Phool and named them after the Marx Bros - both the actors and then all the characters they've played. Sadly, most of them have been renamed :(

During Thanksgiving I was lazy I didn't log in, so all my piggies except for Ron Swanson and Tammy 2 were dead. Make of that what you will.

  • Even though I am in the Sandbox Group, I do not like all the piggies with the same name for the nibble/pet reason. What I do like, however, is a theme for piggies on a street - characters from a book or movie (Rhett, Scarlett, Ashley), similar word plays (Parallel Porking, Porking Garage, Diagonal Porking), or names of members of a specifc group such as a band or well known family, or even presidential candidates for that matter.

Creative animal names, specifically when you see a pattern within a street, make me smile.

eta: I think I will change the piggy name mission for the Sandbox to giving all of the piggies names following a given theme (Pokemaon characters, Prime Ministers of India, islands in the Atlantic, characters from Grimm's Fairy Tales, whatever)

  • @Kookaburra Yeah I think it's interesting when theres a theme. I was just bored and decided to visit the other streets in my complex and one of them had loads of piggies all named after One Piece characters. I then proceeded to nibble all of them.

  • I only name animals in themes like you stated. All mine at home are named after star trek characters. The ones on my black use to be named all after full house characters and I've done tons more from the Simpsons to its always Sunny.

Not only is it fun to see and hear people's reactions but it keeps people guessing haha!

  • I tend to name chickens after Georgette Heyer's heroines. I realise this is obscure. (Names like Frederica, Leonie, Venetia, etc.)

I have an ambition to name an entire street of creatures after as many characters from the Chalet School book series as possible. There are an *awful* lot of characters to work with...

Ha! I should go on a renaming rampage and change everyone I find to characters from Julia Quinn's extended Regency family & friend tree.

    1) I can
    2) I am an egregious and impenitent punster
    3) Chickens are too serious

  • I just stumbled over a chicken named "Dread Pirate Roberts" and felt the sudden urge to rename all the chickens in the street after The Princess Bride characters. Now I feel better. xD
