Under the Wire

How does this quest work? I want to finish this quest, but the wording is difficult to understand. I want to use Lem's Shrine to quicken my learning of Better Learning V, so do I just wait until I have this skill being learned and spend an accumulate 997 favor? What if I hit the 1100 favor limit and get a new emblem by accident? Would I need to get back up to 997 favor again to be able to spend it on the skill?

  • You can accumulate 997 favor at any time with whatever giant you want.  However, if you have a particular skill you want to use it on, you need to wait until you're in the middle of learning that skill to use that favor.

If you hit the favor limit and gain an emblem, you'll have to start all over again.

Also, I'm not sure how it functioned for everyone else, but most people I spoke to didn't have to get 997 favor EXACTLY.  I had 999 favor and was able to complete the quest, and a few other people I spoke to were the same way.

  • The wording on that quest is atrocious. I got exactly 997 favor points, but figured it said I had to get AND spend exactly 997 favor point. So, I'm looking at my favor points available to spend and I watched them dwindle from 813 down to 797. So, I kept donating, thinking if I got close to the 1100 needed the the number of favor points to spend would go up. NOPE. So, I figured eff it and spent them anyway. I got the quest completed.

    *sigh*

  • It doesn't need to be EXACTLY 997, just at least 997. It took me a bit of trial and error to finish, but that's how it worked for me.

  • Seems like every quest is written horribly. It's like TinySpeck hired artists, programmers and accountant and didn't hire writers or game designers.

    But that's just my opinion.

  • The most important thing is the favor points have to be with the primary giant of the skill you are learning (or you can switch what you are learning to match the giant BEFORE you spend the points). Donate small items if you are close so as not to go to far over.

  • @Walla Walla, "Every quest is written horribly"?  I've heard a lot of complaints during the few days I've been around, but "only horribly written quests exist" has not been one of them!  Is that really what you meant?

Also, on topic: I think I heard somewhere in the grapevine that it's meant to be exactly 997, but isn't fixed yet.  No idea on veracity of that statement, so take with bucket of salt.

  • strategy tip: note that it has to be the primary giant on the skill you are learning at the time. 997 favor points with the primary giant takes about 3 hours off, so don't pick something too short!

  • @ Lara I forget the name of the quests by now (because i did them already), but there's like the nurture a tree to full health that needs re-writing. Umm, If you give me a link to all the quests ill point them out.

Idk if that's all of them; possibly not. Your response, when written up, should probably go into a new, different thread, though.

  • Walla Walla is either a troll or just an amazing arrogant jackass, just ignore him.  He likes to talk about how expensive his degree in game design is.

  • Frankly I think anyone that has a "degree in game design" (whatever THAT is) is unfit to *be* a game designer. To make a truly great game, you need a unique vision and the passion to carry out that vision against all obstacles. The only thing you'll get out of a college course is the ability to work at EA.

  • +1 DJ Plaid.

    The quest is basically this:

look at the skill you're learning and check it's primary giant
go to that giant's shrine and accumulate at least 997 favor
    spend that favor

    Quest complete :)

If what's troubling you guys is getting to that exact number without hitting 1100 favor, the wiki has the favor point tally of most items if you just search for that item. But I find the easiest is just using gems and meat. 1 meat = 1 favor points so it's less math. just get to around 800-900 willy nilly, then slow down and constantly check your favor points before hitting donate (and have the wiki open while you're at it if you're not using meat)

  • To add to what Piratice said, you can also have the Check Favor window open as you donate meat by meat (or even gems). That helps me a lot :)

  • I overshot the mark on the this last night and ended up with an emblem. I don't mind terribly much since it's the first emblem (other than the one I spent to unlock skills), but I would be peeved if it was my second. There ought to be a way to choose whether you want an emblem or to spend the favor on learning.

That would be nice to have! Thanks for all the help everyone!

  • Someone told me that when gaining favour you get 10% of the notional item value (as opposed to the 70% you get from most vendors). Unless of course you're using some kind of shrine powder, which  mutliplies the favour points for the donation. That would mean that by looking at the value in the item info you should be able to work out exactly how many favour points a donation will give you in order to ensure you don't go over.

  • Great! I accumulated 980 Lem favour points, started learning Better Learning V and spend all the points. It seems I should have waited until the skill is half learned and now I have wasted all the points! How on earth was I supposed to know???

  • Vincent you did exactly the right thing.  See this post

  • When you are near to get the emblem, donate something that you have plenty, see how much favor that is, and do the math to avoid getting the emblem. It doesn't have to be exactly 997, a little more will work, but if you get the emblem, you have to start the quest all over again.
