[investigating] Forum eats blank lines

The new forum/group changes are super, thanks!

The new editor does however, seem to have an appetite for bank lines. For example, if I post something that goes:

Line 1

Line 2

Line 3

It comes out as

Line 1
Line 2
Line 3

I have to re-edit the post to fix the spacing.
And I also discovered (whilst writing this) that

Line 1
Line 2
Line 3

gets munged into

Line 1Line 2Line 3

Switching into HTML mode seems to be the only reliable way to get readable spacing.

  • What browser are you using?  I'm currently using Firefox 3.6.13 and not having this problem.  I do however have this problem on Opera 11.01.

  • I'm using interent explorer 8 & it does the same for me. I just posted an idea in the forums and hit the enter key twice after each paragraph to compensate, which used to work.  Now it is substituting line breaks with spaces.  I tried shift enter as well, same issue.   In fact, in this post there should be 2 line breaks before the beginning of this sentence, and it looks like there are 2 spaces instead.

  • You know what I hate? Stupid web browsers that all do things differently behind the scenes.

    :)

Things should be better for Safari (and Chrome) now. I'm hoping they'll straighten themselves out for IE8 as well, but I don't have access to a copy of that browser to test right now.

  • A quick check:

    Safari seems
    to be happier now.
    Thank you hitherto.

[If it's any consolation, I've spent the day dealing with IE6's many idiosyncrasies. I feel your pain...]

  • Oh, rich text for forums now? I swear we had that before.

What other changes have been made?

Edit: Only bold, italic and link. No colour/underline ey?

  • " I swear we had that before."

We had rich text in groups, but not in forums. In forums we could edit our posts, but not in groups. Now we can do everything everywhere. Hurrah!

  • This post is being constructed using multiple browsers. This section brought to you by Opera 11.01.Here's hoping it handles multiple lines properly.

Blast it.  Still has issues.  However, Firefox 3.6.13 seems to have no trouble...
... as these split lines can attest.

Just upgraded to Firefox 4.  Does it have problems?
    Nope!  No problems!

Okay, this section's being constructed with Internet Explorer 8. Here's hoping it supports multiple lines properly... it doesn't.  Not ONLY does it not recognize the linebreaks, but it then proceeds to remove all the linebreaks through the entire post when I edit it!.

I'm going to go back to Firefox to make this post presentable.

    SUMMARY OF RESULTS:
Firefox has no issues whatsoever.  Opera will appear skip a full line every time you hit enter, but in actuality only returns to the next line.  You'll need to hit enter twice to make a paragraph break, although it will look like you made a two-line break before you submit the post or preview.  Internet Explorer doesn't recognize linebreaks at all, and for some reason strips them out of the post entirely.

If I can provide any further help in testing out this problem, just let me know how.

  • Present THIS IE8! *moons*  I know this isn't constructive, but I truely feel for hitherto.  Having done html in a past life it is infuriating! *moons again for effect*

  • For those still following along at home... linking was a bit random before now. The code we were using was trying to be far too clever for its own good, which led to weird links being posted as "-rte-edit-rag-" instead of the intended link... in some browsers, at least.

I've now lobotomised the linking code, so it should behave itself and put the link you intended in posts, rather than doing its own thing.

(and yes, the link buried above is my way of testing that it's really doing what I expect on our production servers ;) )

As always, if you continue to see failure-cases, let me know!

  • hey hithrerto!  looks like line breaks are still not working in IE8.

I tried using the html source editor thingy and that didn't help any.  Well... actually i take that back.  only once the BR's showed up in the preview but still won't post.

I couldn't get the preview to show me any more breaks after that though.

  • Same result with IE9, it seems.  No line breaks, even when using <br>.

  • The Rich Text Editor has now been disabled for all versions of IE.

Blame for its not-working-great could be assigned in many different ways (towards our Rich Text Edit code, towards IE, a bit of both...), but the fact is, it's probably better if it just doesn't show up for now.

At some point I'll delve back into it and try to make it better, but right now there are many other parts of the game that need my attention!
