What causes a piggy to die?

I only have two pigs - or at least, I had two, now I'm down to one - and feed them by leaving crops on the ground on their pen.  I haven't got to RHK yet so can't use a feeder.  I pet them every time I log in, which is probably 2 or 3 times a (real time) day.

So I logged in today to find one of them dead.  Lots of food on the ground, other pig fine, so I've got no idea what caused it.

Does anyone have any idea why my piggy died?

Thanks in advance
Midi

  • This question has been discussed in numerous threads on the forums. You could do a search and read that's already been written.  However I think it all boils down to "who knows? maybe the giants. sadly, they're not telling"

  • All animals will eventually die depending on how much they're used (petted, nibbled, squeezed, milked). So that may be the problem if it wasn't food.

  • @Tibbi yes I know it's been discussed, and I've been reading this forum for about 5 weeks now, and have used the search feature many times.   On this particular subject I couldn't find an actual answer, and it hasn't been brought up recently (to my knowledge) so I thought maybe it might be worth asking again in case anyone had any new ideas or had found out anything new.  There seems to be a lot of conflicting information too, I've read that Piggies won't eat from the ground, that they will eat nearby trees instead, that they will eat from the ground, that they won't eat from trees etc. so I was sort of hoping someone might have some kind of definitive answer.

@Little Miss Giggles, thank you, maybe that was it, I bred both the pigs from eggs on the same day about 2 weeks ago, which doesn't seem that long to live, but maybe it's random.

  • That does seem short for pigs. That's more like the butterfly lifespan (give or take a few days).

I've had some that I've bred from eggs that I've had at least 4 weeks or so that haven't died yet, with collectors gathering up the meat (I don't nibble them often and pick up the meat once or twice a day) which should count toward their demise as the milk collectors do to butterflies. I even have one from the streets that I've had almost since a few days after launch.

  • My piggies died with uneaten crops on the ground in their pen before I had RHK.  The crops were disappearing, but somehow it didn't count.  You need to hand feed every time you log in to keep them alive reliably until you learn RHK.  A couple times a RL day seem to work reasonably well. They will live well beyond two weeks if you keep them fed.

  • Thanks folks - I am a few days away from being able to learn RHK, so I will need to make sure I remember to feed them by hand.  I wonder where all the crops are going :O

  • The surviving pig probably killed the other one. My pig does this a lot. Porkins has killed at least five other pigs to date.

Sometimes he toys with them first, letting them live for up to a week before slaughtering them.

  • Oh. My. Goodness.  You could be on to something there @Xev.  Petal did look very suspicious, I will have to have a stern word with her.

  • i really need the ability to like, thumbs up, star, fave and/or +1 posts. like Xev's above.

  • Yeah what Lucille said.  If you don't hand-feed them, they die.

Also Xev has an interesting hypothesis, and one which made me giggle rather mischievously... >_>

  • You can use a feeder even without RHK, just pick it up, fill it, and drop it.

  • No, I'm pretty sure you need Remote hardkeeping to use it, because I couldn't do it without an emblem, then learning it. :/ I don't know how your piggies died, I have a piggy feeder I use, and they poop alot. [lol]

  • None of mine have died ever since I have bought my bog house which is like ages ago. Although generations of butterflies have passed.

@ICountFrom0 that doesn't work, you'll need a friend. You can still collect meat, but will need the skill to grab it out.

  • I've never had a piggy die since I started playing!  Even since before I had RHK.

If you can grow trees, you don't need RHK.  Imo, RHK is only absolutely for if you'd rather your pigs eat something less expensive than bubbles/fruit/beans, such as grain.  Or if you have so many piggies that your trees get stripped faster than you can log in to water/pet them.

I've only ever hand-fed my house piggies to get seeds from them, not to keep them alive.

edit: Mind you, this won't be applicable for 30k or 50k houses.
