Unfriending... should work both ways

I'm positive I'm not the first to bring this up, but I'm gonna do it anyway.  Blocking makes me feel icky, even when it's been put off and only used as a last resort.  When I unfriend someone (typically for being a pest, and not taking advice to cool their jets with any sort of seriousness) it would be super-cool if I was immediately removed from *their* friend list as well.

I think most wouldn't notice.  Maybe it's the fact that I'm an 'a' player and appear at the top of most player's lists.  I don't want to be mean and resort to blocking, but it's been necessary in a few cases since simply unfriending someone hasn't made them go away, so to speak.  I don't want this to turn into a facebook spinoff with regard to friend lists and such... but a two-way unfriending would be a really convenient addition for me.

As an aside, this feature would likely also help quite a bit toward the whole "street thievery" issue that has been hot in the forums for a few weeks now.

Thoughts?

  • I agree, acro. I find myself being IMed for summons from glitchen I don't know. Somehow, I"m on their friend list. How do I get myself off of there?

  • Seems very reasonable, and probably a good idea.

  • Blocking and unblocking will do the same for now, btw. (getting you off of their friends list but not really blocking them)

I like being able to quietly remove people from my friends list without them noticing that I'm gone from theirs.  And I like it that people can clear out their friends list and make it more managable without them disappearing from mine.

If you stepped this up so that the current them-only option wasn't there, it would be a much more brutal event.  Now, you have three choices:  remove them only,  (block/unblock) remove them and yourself, or block them permanently.

Under your scheme there would only be two:  remove them and yourself, and block them permanently.  Personally, I like being able to remove people from my list without being removed from theirs.  Why force me to also remove myself if there's  no need?

  • WindBorn, I appreciate your stance.  I also think you may have had better luck than I in the friend department in some cases ;)  Removing someone from my list has not prevented them from continuing to spam me in IM and such, and that sort of behavior was the impetus behind my thinking.

  • In that case, you can block them and unblock them.

Why should we lose an option that works for most people just so other people don't have to momentarily block and unblock someone?  I don't see the benefit of losing the one-way function, since you can already achieve your goals with the current system.

You can already achieve your goals.  With your new proposal, I would not be able to achieve mine.

  • I'm sure Windborn and Millie covered up the option that you can use.
