Mining Style Code?

Eureka and I were mining in the Deeps and thought it would be nice if we could come up with a signifier for mining styles that Glitchen could wear.  What would people think about designating color of mining hat for a signifier that it is OK or NOT OK to mine in groups?  There are at least two colors, black and red.  Red could mean NO (stop) and black mean OK.

Anyone interested in fashioning a hanky code of sorts in this manner?

Alternately, perhaps the Vanity folks could come with two mining hats for the wardrobe, one with a thumbs up and the other with a thumbs down?

Any other ideas?

  • Wow, that was quick, Circe! Good job!

I like the idea of some signifier that let's you know which glitches are cool with social mining. I know we've seen the breakdown of rocks per helped mining vs solo mining, but sometimes it really comes down to personal style. Some people just want to mine alone, and that's fine. Others like to mine with others, also cool.  In the case with Circe, I walked away because I didn't want to step on her toes (I think we started at the same time), and luckily she called out to me.

I know the rocks belong to everyone, etc. But it would be nice if we could accommodate everyone's preferred style as best as possible, in a casual way (read: not harsh, unwritten rule, just something that helps the process for those in know or who ask).

I don't have any ideas that are different from yours, Circe. Hopefully others will weigh in.

  • I think the idea would be hard to spread out among (new) players, and even harder to enforce.

I find there is an etiquette developing about mining, depending on areas. I believe the more dedicated miners (like the ones you find in Ajaya Bliss, for example) favor the "help mine" way. Meanwhile, I guess it's better not to "help mine" in, say, Groddle Heights. Or ask before doing it.

  • I see what you mean, Ximenez. However, I don't think it's something that needs to be enforced. It wouldn't be a rule, just an easy way to spot the people who also like social mining, without the formality of "do you mind" - I think asking is certainly fine and appreciated, but this just skips that step for people who don't mind and do know the sign. Just a casual thing. I think others would catch on, without it breaking the present etiquette.

  • Maybe the devs just need to make us a "Mines Well With Others" shirt :)

  • I think the idea would catch on more if there was a real incentive to mine in groups. It seems solo mining has a better payoff over all. I could be wrong?

  • Popping this into the ideas forum, so it can swim with the other lightbulbs.

  • This is a cool idea, although I sorta think the onus should be upon solo miners to employ their own code (yes, because I don't want to wear a black mining hat lol).  If the devs could be cool and help design it, it would only be one hat and could probably use a fairly clear graphic (perhaps two stick figures mining a rock with a cancel symbol around them?), even for noobs to understand.  Again, it's not going to be a law, and soloers would have to bear in mind that they might get a) griefed a bit and b) joined by noobs, regardless... but, yeah, seems like an excellent solution for wouldbe soloers.

  • you could put Small shiny object with no intrinsic value on each side of the rock and drop a mining claim note on the rock
then pick up your claim kit and move to next rock
no enforcement just a mining style indicator

  • I have been wishing for an easy way to communicate this too. I have no preferred style now that the system has been revamped. Would it clutter local chat too much if I said "ok to join" every time I started a rock?

  • I like this idea.  I don't think it would stop everyone from joining (some people feel entitled to "help" with every rock and mob mentality can be unpredictable) but it might make some people stop and think.  Personally, I'm not bothered by being helped by "noobs."  I know they most likely have their quest to do and they usually don't travel in packs.  I enjoy helping them out.  I'm also hoping that mining will settle down a bit as people level up.  Right now it's just crazy, but I can't imagine this intensity lasting.
