Animations for Interactions

The game's visually very cute and consistently well drawn, but having just a progress bar for every interaction really drives home the fact that it's mostly lots of grinding.

Adding animations and reducing the prominence of the progress bar - at least for the most common interactions - would go a long, long way to making the game feel like a game and not an interface between progress bars.

  • I would also say that there shouldn't be actions that take 10 or 13 seconds. It's boring to just stay looking at a progress bar that long.

Mining, for example. I suggest each mining action should take a lot less time (like a two- or three-seconds animation), and provide less stuff, or stuff that is less valuable.

I would prefer to mine something three times for three seconds each, that only once for nine seconds, while waiting for the progress bar to reach its end.

No to progress bars! They make the game boring!

  • On the other hand, I thing cooldowns are perfectly ok. Like the meditation cooldown, or the spinach effect time bar. These are different because you can do something else (or are expected to do something else) meanwhile, not waiting.

  • Yeah... the progress bar annoys me a tad...  It frequently blocks what the rocks are saying to me.  I don't see the need for them, really.

  • +1 for less time to mine - less reward = same ultimate reward..  I know its just psychological, but for someone like me that silently hurls tirades of unpleasant epithets at the fool in front of me at a light that's changed green and they refuse to move for what seems like forever.. it would be an improvement..

  • Yes, it's suppose to take a long time to do things at lower levels. That's one of the incentives for learning higher level skills.

  • Have to agree that the progress bars are a bit visually unappealing...would be nice to see something else as I'm 'working' on something.

Yep, was going to say, as your skills increase the time it takes to do things shortens considerably...break out the books folks, especially if you aren't patient...

  • Ok, I didn't know about Mining IV. But as a low-level player I still think each mining action takes way too long. I would prefer to have more rewards with higher skills, not less time.

  • Er, not to be contrary, but since it takes less time to mine at the higher levels, you do get more rewards...more ore, more gems, etc. Also with each skill the probability of getting more gems increases, so again even more rewards.

Honestly, to me the fact that it takes me a bit longer at the lower levels makes the game more challenging which I find appealing (and causes me to want to learn the higher level skills to decrease those times). As I increase my skills at these types of basic tasks (and they take me less time), then it allows me to move onto other new skill sets and tasks, which are then a new challenge for me.  But to each his own...

  • b3achy, I agree.  Scaling time (and other benefits) to level of achievement is key.

  • There are other ways to benefit from higher mining skills:
    - You could be able to mine more valuable ores.
    - You could get bigger specialty bags.
    - You could get a "mining robot" or some kind of helper.

Anyway, the point wasn't only about mining. Most actions seem to have a progress bar in Glitch, and sometimes it looks like waiting is what you do the most.

On the other hand, I don't mean it like it's a deal breaker! I very much want to play Glitch, progress bars and all. It's just one aspect of a rich game that I would like to see changed.

  • I guess what should be clearly spelled out here is that as you progress in (almost) any particular skill set, the time required to perform actions gets shorter.  Caring for trees, repairing tools, cooking, etc. all take less time, chances of random bonuses increase, and IMHO the game becomes much more fun.

Unfortunately, the maximum size of a bag is sixteen slots, and I don't think that's going to change.  Fortunately, the skill tree keeps growing, and we never know what benefits new skills will provide.
