Skills diminished - how do you feel about it?

Since the latest updates I've so far realized that my mining time has doubled and the amount of grain I get from chickens has halved...and I'm sure there are similar things across the board. While there are probably upgrades out there that compensate for this, to me it just seems strange and a bit unfair to have the skills we've already spent so long to learn be diminished. So how do you feel about this?

  • Um, not sure, I'm still confused about everything like before my goal was level 60 eventually, but now I"m not sure what the goal is. I'm not sure if maybe we should just purchase all the upgrade cards, then we will have optimum abilities to do everything?
Posted 7 months ago by Tawanda Subscriber! | Permalink
  • You can now use the upgrade cards to restore everything back to the original speed, amount, etc. plus more in the future.

  • I'll not be mining again until I get the right upgrade cards to shorten the time. So it looks like I'll be kept from playing a lot, waiting for end of day for the reshuffle. I'm not going to blow img on upgrades I won't be using like cooking and growing, just to get another card in hopes of upping my mining speed. Ah well, have RL stuff to do in the meantime.

  • I'm fine with diminished abilities because I barely use some skills but don't want to actually dump them.  In fact I think that part is great.

But for example I haven't yet been offered any mining-speed cards, which I think I would take; and I keep getting cards for hooch and cookery, which I really never do, or to speed learning where there are at present no skills for me to learn.  It's annoying that we can't suppress them for [x] days, or anything, to increase our odds of getting a card we'd actually buy.

  • I love the change personally. To be honest I was getting bored with just being "the best" at a certain skill. This adds more variables to really allow you to customize your character specifically to what you want to learn. I think this is the best choice in the long run, as it will allow for more varied gamplay between players.

  • I am having the same feeling of dispair right now. I will most likely get over it. But im lvl 30 now, I never was lets grind to the top level, type player. But i learned most skills. My card deck is full of stuff i dont care about.
So I have to STOP LEARNING
    And STOP GETTING ACHIEVEMENTS
till i can get what i need out of the deck of cards.

  • I'm with Muncey. I love the change.

I briefly hypothetized whether I would start over at level 1, with no skills, if I could. Seeing those daunting learning times changed my mind! But to me, a reduction in skills' effectiveness, with the option to not only restore but increase that effectiveness, seems like a great compromise.

Edit: But this is coming from a former level 42 (now 30) with plenty of iMG to burn.

  • I agree that varied specializations are awesome, I also agree that I won't be playing much until I get the cards that restore the skills I used regularly. I wish cards would re shuffle by default at the new day.

  • It's not fun. I already hate mining and so when I had my M4, I was okay with it. Usually, I let my 6yo do the mining because he likes it. I'm going to go back to that until I can redo what I had taken away twice now.

  • I just hope that I get a bunch of mining cards SOON! That's my main income stream!

  • stoot has said "The game is too easy". The card system gives the game a much longer tail in terms of "stuff to do".

It also let's there be a difference between "I can do everything" (having all learnable skills) and "everything is easy / highly profitable".

Yes, its a bit of an annoyance in the short term, but since it ultimately means it will take a longer time to get "bored" with Glitch, I'm all for it.

  • I think if you want to pick up specific upgrades soon you have to accept the hit on buying up the the 'cheap' upgrades whether you think you'll use them or not. Otherwise you could have a long wait. And lets face it, those 200-500 img ones really are pretty cheap (and probably good value). Or am I just speaking from the blissful ignorance of a level 36 imagination pot?

If you think about it, if we came in as new players those cheaper options are the only ones we'd have (I'm guessing they're unlocked by skills learnt, levels gained etc) so we'd most probably have bought them because they'd have been valuable to us then.

  • Come to think of it, I really don't have that much going on in RL after all ;) Maybe I can find some pigs to nibble somewhere besides Besara or Tamila, which seem to be completely devoid of nibblers these days.

Geekybird, I've been buying the cheapies that I don't need in order to get through the deck faster, but I'm inevitably soon left with the choice of three high value cards such as brain capacity or learning speed, which I'm not even sure yet I can use at all. I've already made the mistake of buying Learning speed-up for Industrial skills, of which I have only one left to learn, so it was a complete waste.
Posted 7 months ago by N2ZOrtolanaBlue Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Sandy Yes, I'm having a similar experience - not wanting to buy the learning speed cards right now although I suspect I would have if I'd gone through this as a noob. Nevertheless I've so far managed to acquire 36 upgrades so I think I'm sort of getting there!

Pigs - they're mostly in groddle meadow / forest right now. What on earth happened to all the pigs in Tamila?! There were 200 about a week ago and now there are only 25? Odd!

  • I love a lot of things about the new upgrade. That said, I am disappointed that some skills I spent long days learning just got nerfed. Yes, I can hope to get the right combination of cards some day and then pay for them a second time, with imagination. My feeling is that I already paid for those skills, and taking a few selected skills away from longterm players is not the same thing as the Fahrenheit-to-Celsius shrinkage that hit player levels.

It would make more sense and be fairer to have the upgrade cards upgrade our skills from where our skills were, not from some base level. If that's not possible and you have to nerf some skills back to zero, how about compensating lost skills as Stoot said they will do lost currants, with Imagination?

  • I dont mind, honestly. I am quite enjoying the challenge learning stuff, taking my time, etc. I like things not being so easy.

The only complaint I have about the entire update is the way the white text at the bottom of the screen shoots off to the right. I keep thinking something is running by.  If it would fade out instead, I think the update is almost perfect (except for the bugs)

  • Personally, I love the upgrades, and more importantly, I think they make the game better, more marketable, and more likely to be successful.  I think as a new player coming in, I would find those to be an engaging way to strategize about my character.  It also seems that they are a simpler mechanism by which Ideas from the community can be implemented into the game.  I've already seen quite a number of cards that were clearly based off of requests in the Ideas forum.

And it's not as if the benefits of our skill learning have been destroyed - they have just been scaled back, as with our levels.  Everyone is under the same system.

I like that the game is more challenging, more intellectual, and more strategic.  If I wanted something that was fast, easy, and instantly gratifying, I'd go play Bejeweled.
Posted 7 months ago by Zoethor2 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Fine, but let part of your intellectual strategy be to think carefully about investing time and effort acquiring game goods that can be snatched away without compensation.
Posted 7 months ago by Dotcom Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @buttercup, I have the same reaction with the growl text. I love the placement but a subtle fade out would probably be easier on the eyes. That being said, I think the new ui is pretty much perfect. Much more intuitive in my opinion.

  • Ok..I need to ask because ive searched and cant find anything on it..or am just too tired maybe a bit blind..lol But..do we not get a choice of which we want to upgrade?..For example I want to speed up my mining, but the cards don't give me that choice.
Posted 7 months ago by Cryztal Subscriber! | Permalink
  • At the beginning you get a choice of 3 cards. If you buy one, that card is replaced, ad infinitum.
If you end up with three cards that you don't want, you have the option, once each game day, to "reshuffle" which really means get 3 new cards.
Posted 7 months ago by Dotcom Subscriber! | Permalink
  • ok ty dotcom thats what I thought..so really I cant just  choose to upgrade mining I have to wait and hope it shows up.. ? :-/
Posted 7 months ago by Cryztal Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Dotcom, we _were_ actually compensated for lost skills with imagination.  That is, all the free IMG we got yesterday is enough to buy back all the abilities that were scaled back to card upgrades.  In their view, they have given us the new option to *not* buy them back, and direct our IMG points elsewhere - which I think we'll all find less frustrating once we've actually been dealt the option to restore our skill levels.
Posted 7 months ago by oscarette Subscriber! | Permalink
  • But if we don't buy any of the current 3 skills showing at moment then will they change?..or not?..if not doesn't that mean we cant get a chance of a new card. ?
Posted 7 months ago by Cryztal Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Ok reading back up this thread now ..looks like most people are asking/discussing the same thing I asked.. So basically we need to just wait and hope the mining card shows up.  Yes? :-/
Posted 7 months ago by Cryztal Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I was lucky and got two mining cards..metal and beryl..so I'm hoping I get another lucky draw.  Passing the luck to everyone...may you get the cards your little heart desires and more!  My draws today weren't as good as last night...but there's hope!
Posted 7 months ago by AlmostSilver Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Cryztal, yes, the cards don't ever reshuffle on their own; if you don't want to buy any of the three you see (which keeps happening to me too), you have to spend a bit to re-deal the cards, which you can do once per game day.  So far I've reshuffled every chance I've gotten, and I haven't been offered any mining speed increases yet - a couple of *yield* increases, but nothing to get me back down to 4 seconds per strike.
Posted 7 months ago by oscarette Subscriber! | Permalink
  • WOW..Almostsilver...well done ..:)
Posted 7 months ago by Cryztal Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It's a pain, sure, but I'd rather this than being reset. I'm betting that within a few days, the cards we want will come up. It was probably tough to find a balance betw adjusting the new system for more experienced players and accommodating the new ones since the way some of the skills are being offered has changed so drastically.

And realistically, those of us that have been around for a while can afford the new upgrades as soon as they show up, which I think makes us better off than the lower-level players.

  • @oscarette, afaik every Level 60 player got exactly the same amount of imagination. Some of those players had learned all the skills available, some had not yet learned them all, some had unlearned a few skills just to speed up the new ones. The imagination we got was based on xp learned getting to level 60.

This reminds me of one of those arguments with your mom where you say, "Mom, why did you give my favorite Tshirt away to Good Will?" and she says "What about all the times I brought you soup in bed when you were sick, doesn't that make up for one lousy Tshirt?" Well all you can say is yeah, you're the greatest, and I love you for it, but it still doesn't make me happy my Tshirt is gone.

So yeah, TS, you're the greatest, but I still have the right to want stuff I actually do want, even if you feel fully entitled not to give it to me.

  • oscarette..thank you.. thats exactly what I thought and was afraid of..LOL..Oh well a shuffling we will go..btw I just found a new skill in my skill thingie section..Was gonna say my wee rock will be happy...but he aint there.. :(
Posted 7 months ago by Cryztal Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Dotcom, please stop spreading that misinformation.

Not all 60s got the same amount of imagination.  Most of us got the same, some people got more than us, and some got less.
Posted 7 months ago by WindBorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • While the increased mining time is a bit annoying for me (at least until I get the card), nothing has rankled me. We were told months and months ago that there would be big changes, and I simply appreciate the fact that they are going through the trouble of greatly changing the world and improving the game while leaving our characters intact. :) I'm sure it would have taken a lot less effort to beta wipe us!

Also, I trust Tiny Speck's development staff, and that the changes they are making are for the better. I work for a different online game company, and I understand how much love and devotion they are pouring into their work every day. :)

  • Another question ( or two ok maybe three lol )...when we upgrade a skill does it happen right away..or is there a time scale involved? And can we choose to upgrade even when we are already learning a skill..Oh and does anyone know how to upgrade our character...or is that not in play yet?
Posted 7 months ago by Cryztal Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I love a lot of things about the new upgrade. That said, I am disappointed that some skills I spent long days learning just got nerfed.

I would respectfully point out that learning skills doesn't really entail you doing anything - other than waiting, I suppose.

Bonuses have been taken away by one hand and offered up by another in the form of upgrade cards, and a healthy imagination balance to spend on them.  We are just reshuffling the deck chairs, as it were.

What I'm starting to wonder about is why some skills still exist.  For example, with gardening (tree harvesting) there was an intermediate skill level which enabled you to (I think) begin to harvest twice, then another where the harvest itself increased dramatically.  But some of the others advertise, and still advertise via their descriptions, that you'll get better drops from trees if you learn that skill.  Except, it looks like drops are now implemented via these upgrade cards.  So what to these "better bonus and drop" skills really do?

  • In addition to Windborn's point about level 60s getting different levels of iMG, we also were compensated for a number of skills in those upgrade cards we were given for free on the day of the change.

And, in general, it's probably good to recognize that the game is still in beta.  I think TS has been, really, FAR more than fair in terms of compensating us for mistakes/changes, given this is a beta game.  They must have had to put a lot of time and effort in to make sure that we all wound up on the other side with our Glitches still intact.  It would have certainly been a lot easier on them to just say, forget it, wipe the database, everyone starts at 0 again, with no skills, no inventory items, no customized /homes, no nothing.  We should be thankful we have what we have.

  • I'm annoyed that TS did not warn us.  They have been coding this for months; obviously they could have said something.  I would have liked to stash more rocks and elements than I had around the house since I can't stand to mine at 10 sec.

There are some neat cards and I'm enjoying seeing all the new ones but I don't like that things like mining speed are essentially random.  When will I get the cards I need?  Tomorrow?  Next week? Next month?

  • Zoethor2  we also were compensated for a number of skills in those upgrade cards we were given for free on the day of the change...

Were we giving free cards...?? Or am I picking you up wrong?

  • No FUN! No you have to pay and pay and pay, and hope this time your mining card comes up.  If the cards changed on their own i wouldn't care. This system does not seem fun at all.
Posted 7 months ago by MomDressU? Subscriber! | Permalink
  • No. We were not given free cards. If we qualified, we were "preloaded" with the cards and the corresponding imagination deducted
Posted 7 months ago by Rah Subscriber! | Permalink
  • As I understand it from something Stoot posted last night, *most* 60s got the same amount of IMG, because most of us had roughly the same set of skills - which TS basically pre-loaded for us by "buying" them from the max available IMG.  But some folks ended up with more; for example, maybe they didn't have snapshotting, which I guess is now a cardbased ability; I have it built into my character, as do most players I know.
Posted 7 months ago by oscarette Subscriber! | Permalink
  • This is all giving me a confused head..so I'm just going to keep earning and buying what ever looks ok...then see whats what.. lol
Posted 7 months ago by Cryztal Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Lucille - we were given information that this change was coming months and months ago.  To say that we were given "no warning" is just incorrect.
Posted 7 months ago by Zoethor2 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @windborn, I am not aware of any level 60 players getting more or less than the vast majority. If you are, I'd love to see a link to where that data is shown.

According the the FAQ there may have been some slight subtraction from Imagination for the few level 60 players who for some reason were missing 3 particular skills: Snapshottery, Better Learning, and Unlearning. www.glitch.com/help/faq/#q155

Aside from that, the official FAQ describing "exactly what math wizardry was behind figuring out how much Imagination I got" http://www.glitch.com/help/faq/#q163 says absolutely nothing about any imagination being added or taken away in compensation for any other skills being nerfed.
Posted 7 months ago by Dotcom Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Zoethor2 When in the forums did they say skills were going to increased by a card/slot machine mini-game. You pay iMG to gamble the next card is the one you want, or You pay iMG to reshuffle the card and gamble the card you want shows up.
Posted 7 months ago by MomDressU? Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Cryztal.  As an example, if you had Better Learning 1 through 5, then at the switch those skills were taken away and instead you got a whole bunch of "speedy learning" cards which show up in a special place on your upgrades page.   If you didn't have BL, then your card deck would have these speedy learning cards in them and you could spend imagination on them.  They're less 'free' than 'compensation for skills'.

  • Dotcom, if you want to go with your T-shirt analogy, it'd be more like "mom" folded it an put it away in a drawer … with a bunch of brand new clothes. You can wear the T-shirt if you'd like, and you can also wear some of the new shirts, jeans, etc. — up to you. Yes, it's not on the floor next to your bed any more so there is the very slightly & temporary inconvenience of having to slide the closet door aside and pull the drawer out. But you have more than you did before, just re-arranged slightly.

  • That's what I've noticed so far Stoot, and 99.5% of everything I've seen is awesome, but, uh, what happened to the chickens? Only five grain per squeeze now, despite the fact I've spent all 2.1 million of my imagination searching for another animal upgrade :)? Is this an intentional reduction?
