People going to your street randomly. Do you like it or not.

I'm not very happy that random people can go to your home street and take whatever they want. Leave your opinion in the comments. :)

  • The street is meant to be public, while your home is your private space.  Don't put anything out on the street you don't mean to share, or mind having someone take.  I think it's a great design, giving us the best of both worlds (private/public).

  • I like that people can come in to my street, even at random. But then again I don't drop things than can be taken outside of the house... I might start leaving some gifts for visitors around ^_^

  • I love having visitors, and a place where the gifts I leave can be taken by other Glitches. I love having a place to leave newbie bags that other Glitches can direct people to.  "Go to WindBorn's and grab yourself a newbie bag".

It's like a neighborhood street IRL.  You don't control who comes and goes but you do see fewer people and mostly they are people you already know.

    I'm liking it.

  • I also like having anyone be able to visit my street. When I leave stuff on the street, I do so with the intention that it can be taken by any random person who happens to come by.

While I'm perfectly happy with the way the street works as is, it also wouldn't bother me if TS gave people additional options, such as being able to keep people they've blocked from entering their street or having an area where people could leave gifts that could only be picked up by the owner of the house on that street.

  • What I'd like is a visitor counter.  Maybe with names, maybe without (haven't decided which option would be better (I can see up/down sides with both)).  A guestbook thingie could be cool (visitor 193460, sign in please).  :)

And newbie bag leaving sounds awesome, esp after relaunch when hopefully lots of new people come streaming in. :)

  • I don't mind at all if people pass through, they are welcome to harvest and mine and nibble the pig.

I would prefer it if my choices of trees were respected and my pig not kidnapped, but it may happen and I have taken it into consideration.  Since that is the way it has been set up then we will have to get used to it as we did with mining!

I will be interested to see; when we can name out street as has been promised; if that makes any difference to visitors' behaviour. Maybe it will make them seem more like regular streets instead of "my" street?

Obviously they have to be there for technical reasons, and I wonder how difficult it would be to lock changes on them to the named owner if they choose (as with gnomes now)?  That would seem to satisfy those who don't want others to alter or remove some things, but allow some things to be left out for visitors.

I may have missed how we are going to be able to develop them, but there seems little point in expending time, energy or currants if our work can be undone at any time, so I expect they will remain rather as they are now if people suffer from vandalism or theft, as has already been reported.

I hope there will be a reasonable compromise, and expect that we will get used to whatever happens as we usually do.

  • I look at my street much the same as the street of a housing quarter, and it's nice to get visitors. It's accessible by (well, for the most part someone who is a degree of a friend of yours but in reality) everyone. That means I have to be careful about what to put out there, and understand if it walks, flies, grows, or is dropped on the ground it can dissapear. I know from experience that garden gnomes and also Icons are _not_ in that category, so they're safe but that's really it. Everything else is subject.

Though, I do see your point about the street access. I will humbly suggest that the concern is coming from the fact that we can't expand our house or inside garden area of the new home. I'm coming from one of the larger homes to this one, and the hoarder in me is saying "oh no! where am I going to put all my stuff in such a small space?!?!! It won't fit! I have no room in my house, but there's all this space outside my home I could use. but darn it, people can take stuff from that area, so now what do I do?", and my frustration level goes up a bit. I'm settling myself by knowing we'll be able to expand our house area 'soon', and all will be well.

  • I like being a steward of a public space.   At the same time I'm not sure I like the idea of being able to kick people out.  Suppose they wanted to assemble there to protest something (not that anyone would...its just an example)?

  • I would be very surprised if we wouldn't be able to decorate/lock items in our front yards too at one point.
But as we're still in this test phase where bugs and issues with functionality are likely, I'm happy that TS chose to first test it only inside our houses. What if they told us we could decorate safely and the next day everything was gone?
I don't mind Glitchen passing my street and taking things I put out there to grab but until I can lock my decorations I won't put anything out I don't want to part with.

  • I wouldn't mind "random" people being able to visit my street, but I would prefer that they not be able to take items that I've placed there, such as feeders. Nor do I think they should be allowed to change the trees or take the animals. Afterall, this is not a "shared" street any more, it is "my" street - as evidenced by the name of the street.

  • I'm hoping that LOTS of people make it a regular part of their gameplay to wander through the housing streets. Once the outside areas are customizable, it should be a lot of fun to walk about and see what others do with their spaces. I believe Glitch will become even more of a social game as a result.

Traipsing through the neighborhood blocks to nibble/squeeze/harvest etc. was okay (hearing the gnomes was the only part that could be considered really fun about it). But it had no surprises, no serendipity. It was just clicking on numbers.

It will be many orders of magnitude better once the full changes are implemented. I predict that having a random meander through housing streets will quickly become one of my favorite things to do in the game and I really hope that many people (everyone, really) will feel the same.

  • We don't have the whole game play picture here -- at a minimum wait until we can expand (or not!) both the private and public sections. We are also supposed to get be getting community halls which will likely be semi-private.

TS has shown a willingness to lock things down to minimize folks disappointment. I for one hope they don't lock things down too much, I like seeing new things.
Posted 9 months ago by Sturminator i` Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Agreed Flowery Pott, although I think the degree of creativity will increase if people can be assured that what they create will remain in place. And if the group halls are to be semi-private, why shouldn't the "private" streets be that way as well?

  • Items that are safe on your street, have tested all of these :
    Animal Sticks
    Icons
    Block&Fuel Machines
    Stills

    Wish list:
    Pig Feeders
    Butterfly Milkers
would be nice to have an extra garden storage bin out there too(someplace to keep extra baby animals to replace any that are picked up)

  • I, like many others, placed a feeder and meat collector in my public street only to see it disappear a day later. Disappointing but not the end of the world.

But I still don't like it. I just did a post in the IDEAS forum for something called Stealer's Guilt. Maybe that could help.

  • I love that you can roam about the streets and have made a game of seeing how many I can go thru before hitting one with an empty sign post. I've seen more people around my new temp house in a few days than I have in my quarter house in months of play. This is a great way to have neighborhoods and I think it will be even better when street customization comes in.  Knowing it is a public space I simply don't put out anything that I don't expect someone to take. i would try and keep my things on the Mangane Gaps street so why would this one be any different?

  • Like it. Thinking it would be cool if someday we could perhaps add a bulletin board, and maybe a lemonade stand or something comparable.

  • I had some stuff stolen that friends had left at my front door that I didn't have time to put away properly.   It was kind of sad but when I gave it more thought I figured the devs must have discussed what they were and were not going to lock down and decided that maybe it wasn't a good idea to encourage people to litter their streets with stuff they didn't have room to store in their houses?

It also requires us to think about the meaning of public vs private,  hoarding vs letting stuff go. I think they made the right decision.

I'd still like to have a mailbox or drop box to leave notes and/or gifts for people who aren't home.   I'd also like to be able to craft a bulletin board.

  • By the way, for those that want to know more about the newbie bags, check out the Sandbox group - plenty of good ideas (ie fill bags with earthshakers, butterfly milk and lotion, food, gems, common cubimal, gems ....) for those who want to get on the Welcome Wagon of gifting when the doors open. Or even just now (there's still people coming into Glitch) :)

Oh, and I don't mind people coming to my street. I treat it like I do the existing public street - leave stuff out that I want to leave out.

  • I think that perhaps they could do a "decorate" mode for the home streets, as well.  Then, items placed while in decorate mode would be locked to the owner, and items just "dropped" in regular mode would be accessible by visitors.

  • I love the idea of having a public space that I get to design/decorate. The more visitors the merrier!
Posted 9 months ago by Munchma Kuchi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I also like to have visitors on my street. There is nothing there that I can't afford to lose but I doubt that anyone will take anything.  If they do I can replace it.  As it is now, anyone can enter your quarter and Harvest the trees on those streets, hogtie and remove pigs, pick up cubies, etc.  No difference that I can see other than the fact that much fewer people will visit my personal street.  I feel just a little isolated.

  • "It also requires us to think about the meaning of public vs private,  hoarding vs letting stuff go. I think they made the right decision."

This is a really good point and it's a very good idea to think about these things. OTOH, I don't believe that we know the "decision" made by Tiny Speck yet with regard to the player street (perhaps "front yard" might be a more accurate description). They only released an update with our new houses for the purpose of testing out the interior decoration and finding any bugs.

Once the yard customizations are fully implemented, then we will know TS's decision about things placed outside and if they will be "locked" or not. We just don't know yet.
Posted 9 months ago by Flowerry Pott Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I like to have visitors, and know that most of my true game friends are respectful of my space/things - ie, would just harvest/mine, but not change things that I did to decorate my yard/street. I actually look forward to wandering the signposts to see how folks have decorated their yards in the future.

I will say that I'm not a fan of grievers; however, it was much easier for them to be grieving en masse in the current open neighborhoods...I think/hope it will be less bad now since we are a bit more isolated as Brib said, so they actually have to work a bit harder since they now have to signpost hop to get to places...It sure seems that if someone grieves you now, it's darn near a directed attack.  This may get worse/easier once they add in a teleport to your street button to your profile...because at that point, they don't have to sign hop to get to your location, nor even friend you.

One of the issues is that you may not have even mutually friended someone for you to show up on their friends list.  And so technically right now, a griever could put you on their sign post, even if you don't consider them a friend, and just harass you until you block them (and that part of the code works to keep them off your street).

I'm hoping how ever they implement the group hall concept, that it will provide for that neighborhood feel again...but we'll have to see about that....

I wish people would stop killing the trees I planted outside my house, though. :(

  • Flowerry Pott:  I thought that some things like icons and blockmakers could be locked outside at present?
Posted 9 months ago by Treesa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Well, as much as I would love it that my street was private, the one I live on in real life isn't. Sure, the things I put outside are mine and all, but that doesn't stop someone from coming by when I am not home and taking them. It makes sense if I look at it that way...

  • Pardon my ignorance (I am new) but how can random people get to my street? Isn't the only way for someone to get to my street would be for them to follow the signpost on my friend's street?

    Please explain. Thank you.
Posted 9 months ago by Smashin Grab Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Anyone can add you as a friend and then add you to their signpost.  They don't have to be on your friend list. Anyone can add a friend of yours in the same way and then get to your street if your friend has you on their signpost. How much it will actually happen is hard to say, but it means you have no way of knowing who is visiting your street.

UPDATE: I don't see this as a problem. I like having it so that people I don't know can visit my street. Just trying to answer a question above.

  • I, actually, be very sad if the streets were made private in any way.
Posted 9 months ago by Carl Projectorinski Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Maybe the signpost is the real problem: it seems to imply that only friends have access.

Instead, perhaps there should be a directory that allows anyone to teleport to any "personal" street. I think of the signposts as shortcuts, but don't think they should be the only way to get to someone's street.

  • The game could accommodate all of our widely-differing opinions by simply allowing each of us to set our streets' access levels.  If I didn't want anyone on my street, my access list would be empty.  If I felt like throwing a party for everyone in the game, I could give access to all.  If I wanted a few friends to be able to use my fuelmaker, I'd put it outside, grant the friends access to the street, and revoke access when they were done.

  • ++++ plus eleventy Billion to glum pudding's latest comment above- ALLOW us each to control our street access and it's front yard area access ouselves! yes-please!

I will copy and paste Audaria's comment above as she happens to sums up nicely how I feel :
from Audaria above - ""I wouldn't mind "random" people being able to visit my street, but I would prefer that they not be able to take items that I've placed there, such as feeders. Nor do I think they should be allowed to change the trees or take the animals. Afterall, this is not a "shared" street any more, it is "my" street - as evidenced by the name of the street. ""

I would add : I do not want random people to be able to change my rocks either (assuming we get the choice later to have a different rock in the front yard of our streets ) .
I do like visitors that are not Hoovers.
I also , like others here, really want to be able to decorate the front yard and outside of the house, even *now* when it just the 1st phase of the BCTC (big changes to come ) . Plus I'd like to share some piggies and butterflies and chickens in the front yard -so that Glitches wandering by may harvest from them .
HOWEVER I will be doing NONE of those things (the yard decorating , the additional resource sharing, etc) when I lack the power to LOCK those items down so that they can not be stolen , replaced , moved , or removed by random visitors.
This saddens me for several reasons- among them : I can't be as creative as I want to be (yet-hope it happens if the devs make/build changes) ; I cant share resources (like say i harvested extra eggs and wish to leave them out for others to take if they needed) as easily as I would like with others ; I get aggravated , feel dis-trustful of others -especially of people that look to be "new" glitches (which really saddens me . I really want to feel the freedom to be a welcoming more senior player to a more junior player) ; and overall lose my "glitchy " spirit. In almost all cases I'm fine with my keyholders havng access to my stuff, it;s the random people walking by that I would want to be able to restrict.
I hope all of us posting helps the devs to see what changes we'd like to see happen ;) .

Some people seem to see too much lockdown as a bad thing --they say it would smother shared creativity.
To spark the shared creativity aspect -I would like to see specific streets or areas to be a public shared space --designated and clearly marked as such -so that there could be more "interaction " amongst glitches like the " shared creativity" . I know there are already public places in Glitch where shared creativity happens, certain streets and all, - but maybe it'd be helpful to see it sparked a bit by having designated spaces .
Like say, I wanted to decorate a PUBLIC street/area ( ie not my home street) with a bunch of cherries and spinach .I do so . Another glitch comes along , after I have left, and sees a way to re-arrange what I did and add some of their own Blue bubbles and Brown bubbles and transforms the display into a more harmonious and attractive display. That would be totally fine with me as a participant and allow shared creativity -because the action occurred in a PUBLIC shared space. Likewise, if half a day later some other glitch comes along and takes the whole display down and puts it in their bag and instead puts up a whole display of their own of something else- then I woudl not be upset becuse this occurred in a PUBLIC street or area. Just a thought.... ;)

  • I personally do not care if people randomly go on my street. It's a public street. I treat it like real life. Let's say in real life, someone walks past my house and sees my tree, and they want to pee on it. I can't stop them especially when I'm not there. It's a public street. It sucks, but I will not hunt this person down and throw a fit about it. I am fully aware that if something is public, things happen. In real life, you have laws and people who police them. In Glitch, let's be real. It's a freaking game. So if my trees get chopped and replanted, I'll replant it again. The developers aren't supposed to be the Glitch police. There are way too many people who play Glitch have nothing better to do than policing other people. It's still a game, people. If you don't like it, find a way to cope. It isn't real life.

They look beautiful, and it also means that anyone who walks around in my street has a shot at some giant love, and I think that's great! By all means, come by my street by traversing through my friend's signposts or asking for a summon if I'm online!

  • I don't mind people visiting my street at all, but unlike quarters, your street feels more of an extension of your house (like a front yard) & I don't like that currently anyone can poison/plant trees on someone else's street or leave or take animals.

I woke up today to find a chicken in my street, & I don't personally want animals on my street - I'll keep my animals in my backyard (& of course there's no way to remove chickens or butterflys).  I can see this could be a minefield for griefing - hopefully people you've blocked won't be able to visit your street in future, but that doesn't stop random Glitchens who're working on animal related achievements (& who don't care about overpopulating Ur with animals) visiting your street & dumping a load of animals there.

Being able to set access levels for your street definitely sounds like a good idea.
