Whimsical Wednesday - Houses Release 3

The game is now open! Check the new thread for feedback: http://www.glitch.com/forum/general/20792/

------

The game is currently closed until sometime Thursday morning, Pacific time. The conversion process is running slower than anticipated, and we want to make everything goes just right, so we will not be open until we are ready.

------

Good morning campers!

Today brings release 3 of the new housing system, marking a full reset of houses.

The game will be closed for a few hours while we perform the reset
.

Do not be alarmed! Only houses are being reset.

After the reset is complete, your house will have been reset to the starter size, with no cultivated items and no furniture. Any upgraded furniture in your house or your furniture bag will be removed. You'll be given a small set of starter furniture in its place.

When you enter your new house after the reset, any items that you had in your old house or your testing house will have been moved into your new residence. Just unpack your moving boxes to get started.

A single moving box will contain multiple boxes for the old house, your test-house home street, test-house backyard and each floor of your test-house.

So that's what the reset entails, but what about new stuff? Well...

Furniture can now be crafted by players. Get building!

‌• Your new houses will now have their own web page, linked from your profile. You'll be able to easily visit other people's home streets from there (as well as from their "info pane" in the game client).

Once you've chosen/purchased a furniture upgrade, that choice is 'sticky'. If you upgrade a chair to style A, then switch it to style B, you'll later be able to switch back to style A at no cost. The same applies to your house chassis.

The initial furniture we give you is soul-bound. This means you can't give it away to other players. Other items may gain this property in the future.

Furniture can now be traded - either by using the 'give' verb, dragging it to another player or using the player-to-player trading system. You'll get an extra warning when you try to trade upgraded furniture. Auctions for furniture will be added in the near future.

Furniture should no longer drop through the floor when you're placing it on your 2nd floor. Or your 3rd - houses can now be 3 floors tall.

All street styles now have music.

Furniture items all have their own web pages, as do the upgrades. You can browse and bookmark your perfect setup while you're waiting for the reset.

The furniture bag is now sorted, to make finding your furniture easier. And it'll now be accessible anywhere in the world, to allow your to trade your items.

The old houses are fading away. Visit the abandoned apartment blocks to reminisce.

There's probably some more stuff hidden in there too, so take a look around, kick the tires and lets us know what you think.

update #1: The housing FAQ has been updated.

update #2: The reset is taking longer than expected - the game will be closed until Thursday morning, pacific time. We are being EXTRA careful with the migration since no-one wants the movers to lose a single precious item.

  • Just want you to know, that on first read, what has me most excited, is that there will be separate boxes for the back yard, the front yard, the downstairs, and the upstairs. I suppose that's because I have that much stuff to sort through. *sigh*   lol

  • @Bees! So if we spawn a new piggy inside the house, on a shelf or countertop, they will still stay there?

  • @elf yeah, that's a nasty case of ingrown internet if I ever saw one. Try lancing it before you go for amputation though.

can I keep it? ill feed it and pet it and stuff..

  • Having moved IRL three-four years ago I'm embarassed to say that I still have stuff in boxes. Even though stuff is being "boxed up" for us it's going to need some planning and SDB building before hand. My old house in Yuca Litt had a few places where I could just stash piles of things so they weren't in the way. (Like my SWF and F collections.)

Making SDBs is going to have to come first as, I infer, only one kind of thing can be placed inside an SDB at a time. (My storage cabinet had four or five different things in it when the world went dark, IIRC.)

  • Are we going to be able to have the same background as the one Stoot has? A bunch of us were stalking his street before God kicked us out and I really love the background there and want it for my very own.

  • "can we move cultivated items after they are placed?" - not yet, only removed. we'll be adding this though

"So if we spawn a new piggy inside the house, on a shelf or countertop, they will still stay there?" - should do!

"I infer, only one kind of thing can be placed inside an SDB at a time" - yes, but there are regular cabinets too

  • "Are we going to be able to have the same background as the one Stoot has?" - not sure which he had, but we did add some new street styles today

  • So as I understand it, we don't know what's in a moving box until we open it, and once we open it we have to deal with it.  Or... what?  Does it explode all over the floor?    Just curious about the mechanics I'll be finding.

  • It looked like a forest but had a lovely big stone archway that was situated just 'behind' his little cottage.

  • In RL the rule is if you have anything packed away in boxes 6 months after you've moved, you don't need it and it's time to donate it, sell it, or trash it.

So in Glitch I'd say the rule is about 2 weeks.

  • "Is it too late for all home owners to get little snow globes with tiny models of our old homes in them? You guys can knock those out in the next couple of hours, right? While doing all the other stuff too. :)"

I'd prefer a waterglobe decoration with my cottage sitting at the bottom of it and a beta fish swimming around. :) I really, really would love a betta fish, and as a (2nd) beta gift, I think it'd be especially awesome (as people suggested in a thread long ago).

  • I'm very excited about this!  You may have inspired me to subscribe rather than buying a-la-carte credits with all the cute firebog styles.  :-)

Before I spend credits, I want to be clear on the purchased styles.  If I upgrade a chair to a Classic Green Chair, have I only upgraded that particular chair and I have to spend an additional 15 credits to get a second Classic Green Chair or do I own the pattern and can upgrade any number of chairs to Classic Green Chairs?  (I hope that made sense!)
Posted 7 months ago by Lucille Ball Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It's only that specific chair, from what I understand, Lucille. To have 2 of those chairs, you'd need to purchase 2, for two lots of credits.
Posted 7 months ago by Fyneila Subscriber! | Permalink
  • "Does it explode all over the floor?" - bingo. BOOM!

"will we be able to preview things before fully committing?" - not street styles, yet

"How come I can't smell my boogers?" - i can smell yours. they're terrible

"If I upgrade a chair to a Classic Green Chair, have I only upgraded that particular chair and I have to spend 15 credits to get a second Classic Green Chair" - yes, this

  • Thanks, Bees!  Just wanted to be sure I understood.  :-)

  • Now that expanding the house will cost iMG (or so I believe), does adding a floor increase the cost of expanding horizontally and vice-versa, or are the costs done on a "per floor" and "per section of wall width" basis without concern for how wide each floor is and how many floors tall each wall section is?

(Wow, this question was much clearer in my head.  You're welcome to come see it there, but it's an awful mess at the moment.)

  • any chance of a toilet in the Housing reset? That had to be high on the list, right? All those ablutions behind rocks in my yard have been upsetting the fireflies and making mining quite hazardous. Seriously. I'm *desperado*.

  • Does that sloped section to the left of the sign in the front yard still exist in the new housing release?  If so, will expanding past that region be done in larger chunks or at a lower cost to compensate for the fact that the entire sloped space is unusable for cultivation?
Posted 7 months ago by Don Monkey Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Will this release include the planned ability to move our house and sign around on our front street?

    (I think I'm done now!)
Posted 7 months ago by Don Monkey Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Will I be able to buy an unlimited amount of any type of item?

I don't care about looks, so I intend to sell my credits to people wanting upgrades. All I want is to be able to fill my house to the brim with SDBs and to fill my yard with crop gardens and trees.

Also, just to make sure I got this straight - to upgrade your house and do things you'll need basically all types of currency?

    - Items and currants to craft furniture items
    - Credits to upgrade furniture items
    - Imagination to expand your house and buy cultivated things for your yard
    - Items for expanding your house

    Am I missing anything?

  • I'm not sure if this has been mentioned or anything before, but I kind of wish that Glitch Subscribers got a little bit of a credit discount when it comes to upgrading the basic furniture. It's really spendy, even when you get a monthly credit present.

I mean, we are already spending money as it is.

  • RE Lord Bacon-O's ambiguous math question:

For total distance travelled (in either direction), 90 miles is a good answer.
For distance from the bird's original starting point, potato is a good answer.
WindBorn's answer is good for either interpretation of the question, so WindBorn wins.

  • @Splendora: Distance travelled from the starting point is even easier: 60 miles.

But potato is still a better answer.  I'm just too concrete a thinker to have come up with it myself. :-)

  • "does adding a floor increase the cost of expanding horizontally and vice-versa, or are the costs done on a "per floor" and "per section of wall width" basis without concern for how wide each floor is and how many floors tall each wall section is?" - the cost of expanding is based on the number of floors and the cost of adding a floor is based on the current expansion size

"any chance of a toilet in the Housing reset" - not today. hold it in!

"Will this release include the planned ability to move our house and sign around on our front street?" - nope

"Will I be able to buy an unlimited amount of any type of item?" - yes

"Items and currants to craft furniture items" - just items really (though you can buy items for currants)
"Credits to upgrade furniture items" - yes
"Imagination to expand your house and buy cultivated things for your yard" - yes
"Items for expanding your house" - yes

"I kind of wish that Glitch Subscribers got a little bit of a credit discount when it comes to upgrading the basic furniture" - there are lots of non-credit sub-only upgrades

"Should other people be able to access our yards without permission?i think we should be able to decide if we want other people entering our yards because im kinda hesitant about planting  herbs in my front yard!" - as designed currently, yes

  • I second the question I read further up the thread... will we be able to install anything on the 'sloped' expansion area to the left of our sign? Or at the very least, will left-leaning expansions be larger to compensate for this otherwise unusable space?
