Community garden problem...Is this a possible solution??

Even if they eventually allow b0th herbs and gardens in one house garden there will still be glitches who need to grow stuff but wont have a house to do so from...
This isnt my idea...Just something I heard in one of the community gardens...
Stakes...You are given a certain number of stakes a day. Those stakes disapear at the end of the day to be replaced by the same number..You cant sell the stakes. They are for your use only and you can only use those and no more...When you plant something you can put a stake in it and it belongs to you..Once the plant is ready for harvesting either the plant goes directly to you or you are told that your plant is ready to harvest and you have X amount of time to pick it up or it becomes up for grabs...If you dont put a stake in your patch then the plot is considered up for grabs... Essentially a gift for someone to come along and take...This limits the amount of plots someone can hog for themselves and eliminates the people who come along and take what isnt theirs or the misunderstanding when someone plants something and someone comes along thinking the plot isnt anyones...Also helps if you get accidently disconnected and you dont have to sit there and hover over your plant...

  • I have to agree with WindBorn completely. A large part of this game is teamwork. Make some friends with some Firebog farmers, and work together to share crops!

  • The community gardens are a resource for the glitches who don't have the ability to get what they need at a particular time (i.e. a noob needs tomatoes to make food for energy but does not have a house or the funds to purchase them.). I used them when I started out. Once I got further into the game and could afford it I began planting one or two more plots than I needed so that I would be leaving something behind for the next glitchen.

I think that by putting such an emphasis on herbs and eliminating the ability to purchase them through the vendors, TS has created the situation we are in. Because they have become so hard to acquire and it is easy to turn a large profit on them now, it is having a negative impact on our world. The whole principle of the community gardens is now ruined by the few greedy players who simply take and don't give back to their community so they can make a profit.

In order to keep the gardens a communal place I do not believe that players should be able to "stake" a claim to a plot that could keep other players from being able to use them. I think the simplest solution is for TS to make it easier to acquire seeds & herbs. I'm not saying make them wildly available... just slightly more accessible. There are several vendors that sell meals, drinks, (mining vendors) and toys but there are only a few and they are widely spread out. Maybe just having one or two vendors in the areas where the herb gardens are would help ease the demand and provide an easier resource for people who just want to complete a quest or make a quick potion without having their moneybags emptied.

For now, I believe that glitches should work together on this. Start networking and creating trade groups for Vegetables & Herbs, find a buddy with a bog house and exchange keys so you each have access to both types of gardens, start helping other players by keeping an eye on their plots and leave a note asking others to not take your herbs or simply to replant what was there if they do.

Everyone just needs to remember that Glitch is a community built by us (and the gods of course ;-) ) what we do impacts all of Ur. If we are all hostile towards each other it defeats the purpose of what we are trying to build.

  • I like the stakes idea! I think the amount given per game day should be minimal, like 6-8 (to be used if afk etc) in order to cut down on people monopolizing all the spots.

Alternatives: items that you have planted and grown are locked to you for x amount of time (only if you choose) and is then up for grabs once the time expires.

I don't agree with the idea that "anything you plant belongs to others in community gardens" because of the glitches who are greedy and give nothing back. A solution like stakes would balance this out. I'm really sick and tired of the greedy people who pop in, run around and grab stuff then leave (not even replanting)...while the rest of us stand there and wait our turn. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the people who are against this idea, are the ones who do this.

    **Edited to add:
@Jurkowoski "having a stake visually shown on the garden shows to other people that you have no intention of sharing it. Now, whether that's true or not, and despite people currently not wanting to share their stuff, a stake will actually show it and prove to people that you're greedy and don't trust people."
-- If I've planted it and spent my time/currants waiting, I could care less if people know that I don't want to share.
However, I do really like your alternative solutions: time locked herbs to you and/or adopting a mining like principle to herbs.

I am in favor of what is fair and balanced for all.

  • here's my idea of what is proper for community gardens:

if you plant it and leave the garden, it's fair game for anyone.
if you didn't plant it and nobody's waiting for it, it's yours.
if you didn't plant it and you pick it, you should leave something replanted.
if you picked it, whether you planted it or not, clean your blasted plot!

just because you watered a thing and can click fast does not give you the same right to harvest as the person who provided the seed and the guano. you have the capability, but that doesn't make it right.

in the herb gardens unless you are leaving a full bed of double-fertilized purple (which blooms in six minutes) you should leave some empty plots when you go.

people who talk about how community gardens are fair game for everyone under every circumstance have clearly never been to a RL community garden, where the issue of who planted and who fertilized is a factor in who may rightly pick.

the stake idea may not be a perfect solution, but i am generally in favor of mechanisms that deter thieves. being able to lock my plants or at least some of my plants for the duration of my time in the garden seems reasonable, and if one is to argue that it would prevent me from planting if i needed to, i am already prevented by courtesy from taking other people's crops and from planting in plots other people are currently using.

to my way of thinking, stakes would simply force similar restraint on those with fewer manners. i am already waiting my turn and i am already not stealing other people's crop. i approve any measure that makes this universal, voluntary or not.

  • I know it would add an extra step but I like the idea of adding an extra menu option of locking (you can pick it) or unlocking (anyone can pick it) the plant. But it should also be limited to 4 or 5 locked plants a day and they should time out if you aren't back to get them within a reasonable time (10 minutes perhaps?). That way someone doesn't take up the whole thing and it's still a community garden.

I don't think community gardens should be fair game to everyone. If I need to grow something and I take the time to, I don't want someone to take it. If I plant extra, I don't mind if someone picks it.

  • I really like the idea of herbs being locked to a player as long as that player is in the garden when the herb is ready for harvest. That seems like a fair way of making sure growers who spent their time and guano waiting for something don't get things snatched out from under their noses, while also not letting people monopolize plots all day when they're not there.

I think that would increase the sense of community in the herb gardens, because I wouldn't have to be paranoid about the intentions of every Glitch who comes up to me while I'm waiting for my herbs to bloom.

  • I totally agree with Sparrow. And i think that a time limit as long as your in the street has some merit.

But as Sparrow said since herbs and potions are so important they should be made slightly more accessible.

I mean the entire point of community gardens is to be community. Community is in essence a group of people sharing and working together. I understand that sometime people just steal what isn't theirs but if we do things like stakes and locking plots and stuff we turn what is sort of a communism to a screwed up capitalism with everybody wary of each other.

As someone said the obvious thing to do is make friends with people with bog house (or firebogs i don't know what that is) and share plots. Although if that is to work i think people should get a locked storage place in their house (i know this is being disscussed in another forum) to prevent petty theft.

Herb and Veg trading groups is also a very good idea i know i would certaintly go for that.
By know i'm not really sure what i'm trying to say except that I don't really like the stake idea and that the whole point is to share so that's really what we should do!

  • to address that thing about sharing:

when i am in a community garden and there are thieves hanging about, nobody shares and everybody is edgy.

when we all know what's what and that we won't be having to fight for our own crop, a good deal of sharing goes on.

cooperation and sharing are undermined by theft. it is easier to be generous with what you have if you have what you need.
