Community Event:War On Spice Trees!

I decided to start a community event that i like to call...war on spice trees!
You know IX is a good place to get spice....but what if all the spice trees were to die? then spice would be more valuable and people could make money off of it!
However, it would also mean spice is harder to come by.

So i would like everyone to pick a side and support it! Those who want spice to be more valuable should work together to kill the trees with poison. Those who want things to stay the same should get antidotes and be ready to save the trees!

What side will you support?

This event starts...NOW!

This should be a fun event to spice things up! *goes off to prepare to poison trees*

UPDATE: I suppose an edit is in order to make it clear my current stance on this...as stated in my latest post in this topic, i have given up on poisoning spice trees..for now at least.  It's a wasted effort,at least attempting this solo. Plus i dont like people being mad at me. Im not a troll, i only had fun in mind when suggesting this.  In fact, i have even tried planting a new grove of spice trees in jethimadh...but when i checked next day, most had been replaced by spice trees.

  • There was a "gas - spice" wars in Ix in beta. It was pretty intense. :D

  • Just wanted to say this: the discussion here has been fascinating, and the fact that people are ready to roll their sleeves up to talk about this is *why* our community is so great, in my opinion. Gameplay currently allows for people to go on a rogue Spice-tree killing spree. But, there is also the space for counter-efforts, should enough people disapprove and mobilize their voices (or green thumbs) against it. Sounds like....politics?

  • I agree that it's great that people can discuss the game and it's community so openly but I don't think this war on spice trees is anything like politics.

It's just ingame vandalism, they're changing whole areas over nothing but a whim. While it's a great feature, it's something that is going to annoy the majority and reminds me of the grieving in Minecraft.

Infact i'd go one step further and say that it reminds me of the UK Riots because the hardworking loyal players are going to be the ones stepping in to clean up the mess (Just like the public did over here)
Posted 15 months ago by Kamwah Subscriber! | Permalink
  • vandalism? this is just market control by hostile actions.

  • What it is doing is galvanising people to enforce their will upon the world, which is the aim of the game.

If you don’t like it, or want to put a stop to it, you also have the means to bring about the things you’d like to see. No one is powerless to act in this game simply because skills cost nothing to learn and levelling doesn’t really give that much of an advantage.

  • This is a bit harsh on the spice trees... I'd like the event to be "Tree Wars: EVERYWHERE".

Pick a team (or teams), propagate your trees... (I'm on Team Bean and Team Spice) :D

  • Sorry, but there is enough political BS in RL. Really was not looking for it on this game.

It was one of the reasons I've liked this game so much. It dosn't (or didn't) pit people against each. At least, not in all the lead up to the game.

There are plenty of that other kind of game. Why can't we have this one when we dont have to deal with that kind of crap. It that just too much to ask?

  • I'm a spice girl. Yep.

*waits for spice trees to start saying "zigga-zig aaaahhhh..." when you water 'em*

  • Why do I have the feeling that those complaining that the game would be less fun if people went on a Spice killing spree are those new to the game. Hell, in the beta, there may, or may not, have been a group dedicated to the elimination of all trees but the Wood Tree?

It's part of the open-ended fun of this game. We, the Community, have the ability to make our own quests, start our own story. In Beta, we had fun because we knew this game was unlike the rest. We knew we didn't have to remain on a set track of what the company said we can do. If they didn't want us poisoning trees, then why have poison?

I for one, will poison trees myself. Why? To make the game more fun and challenging.

  • ^ I agree with Some_Random_Guy completely. This game is a sandbox, and they gave us tools to do what we want.
Posted 15 months ago by Draron Subscriber! | Permalink
  • In the backstory for this game there is already a good vs. evil conflict to participate in.  Namely the battle against the Rook.  Only low level players who don't get it would be trying to turn this into a pvp game.  We all need to be united in the holy war against the Rook, or they will defeat us!  Work toward your piety training and join in the fight.  Griefers are on the side of the Rooks and should be taken down with them!

  • Left side of IX is supposed to be gas plants and right side supposed to be spice. I mean come on east and west spice just scream to be full of spice.
Posted 15 months ago by Nirosu Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Boo. If you want to go bust heads and smash down walls, go play World of Warcraft.

And even a sandbox has rules. There is no value to deciding to run around poisoning trees on a whim.

  • Hrrmmm. Too late to make a Dune reference it seems. X3

I like the premise of this idea, but looking at it from a newb perspective it would make the game very difficult. I haven't had a need for spice yet, but when I do I would hate to have to walk the globe just to find one. Nor would I be able to grow one in my house as I don't have one yet. I've scrimped and saved just to get 5k currants so it'll be awhile before I purchase a home.

  • Nothing fun about WAR. The lack of guns, shooting, killing is part of what I like about this game.  Plenty of other games available for those who like such things.
Posted 15 months ago by reggieness Subscriber! | Permalink
  • When I was a little glitch starting out, all streets had an assortment of trees, except for egg (they always were in underground). There was no set place to gather spice. And the trees had a life span (poison was not invented yet), they would grow old and die. We all petted watered, replanted and kept the world growing. I long for the good old days, it was smaller but more interesting. Ah well.
Posted 15 months ago by Suzy Spring Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Killing off spice trees is certainly within the rules and doing it in an organized fashion would probably drive up spice prices.

For most Glitches higher spice prices wouldn't matter too much.  The ones it would hurt would be the newbs who don't have currants and don't know where to find spice.

Your "War on Spice Trees!" is actually a War on Newbs.  I wouldn't support this event.

  • While I'm not in favor of killing the spice trees, this sort of thing is exactly what Stoot has mentioned in EVERY single interview about Glitch. This type of thing is the epitome of Glitch, like it or not.

    Glitch -noun /gliCH/
    1. A sudden, usually temporary malfunction or irregularity of equipment
    2. An unexpected setback in a plan; a hitch, a snag
    3. A game of giant imagination

  • While i wish to try to kill off the spice trees in IX. Im not that evil or greedy.  I plan to try to start a
new grove of spice trees someplace else if i am successful.

The main purpose of this event is simply to change stuff up a bit and make things exciting. Unlike the wood trees, a grove of spice trees are easy enough. I think you guys should give this event a chance...besides  the side in favor of keeping the spice trees would probobly win anyways im guessing.

  • My main problem with this idea--it pits experienced players against newbies (Oh, I just see that Pixelhack said the same thing). I have a friend with a house with 4 trees, I'll be fine. Someone at a lower level doesn't have the options I have. Experienced players know where else to go to get spice, newbies don't.

But, like Blanky said (I think I'm developing a nerd-crush on Blanky), the rules allow for it.
Posted 15 months ago by LilyBean Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Hey, yeah! Let's be social and POISON SOME TREES. It'll be fun!

    No.

I don't find the trees in need of being 'changed up' or the world in need of being more 'exciting.' They are there when I need them, in places I can travel to. If I want to deforest the world and poison trees, I'll go play 'The Sims: Wasteland' or something.

  • If the game mechanic allows for it then how is it against the rules.

I remember the IX poisoner determined to kill every spice tree in IX. To be honest it was fun working together as a team to save the trees.

The game not only has the poison but an achievement for cutting down trees. The way to earn this is mass poisonings. Sure you can do this at your house, but this is Glitch, the game mechanics allow for this to be done anywhere. Your house just has the added guilt free bonus making it easier.

  • "Only low level players who don't get it would be trying to turn this into a pvp game."

    Not really...

It really doesn't matter how old or young, n00b or experienced your account or your Glitch is...from what I have been shown, tree wars have been going on since Glitch was Game Neverending.  And I do think for most part, the use of the term "war" is applied mockingly and jokingly, although maybe it's not received that way for everyone, which is understandable!  Nobody wants their gameplay wrecked.

I don't have Botany, but I watch the Tree Warz with great interest, as well as the rising/falling animal populations.  A player recently spearheaded removing pigs from streets (I personally felt the pain from that one), and other players in the past have done the opposite by flooding a street with one or more kind of animals.

What I am waiting to see is some kind of really organized, sustained and creditable action, that will be met with a similar but opposing action.  Right now Glitch has "personalities" and social groups, but no established social action leaders and no social action groups that aren't basically one-off kinds of goofs. Of course, when all your efforts to change the environment can be undone overnight by the opposition, or in minutes by the devs, it's hard to plan long term...but I want to see more of this, not less.

In another thread, striatic compared Glitch to playing slot machines, and I think that is a valid metaphor...but only as it is applied to the mechanical aspects of some (ok many) parts of the game.  But all this messy, disorganized, whack-a-mole tree warz/save the pigs/moar chickens/no butterflies stuff is the warp and woof of the game.

  • Sorry, if I want to engage in destructive, negative behaviors, I'll go play some other game.

Just because a match manufacturer creates something that burns doesn't mean they intend for you to burn down the neighborhood. Treat the world the way you would want it to treat you.

Having actually worked on a game, there's only so much you can do against negative influences. Spend your time creating systems against vulgarity, vandalism, trolling, etc. ... and that's ALL you'll be doing. The game becomes a drag/downer, and both creators and players lose interest. Hence, why I dislike the idea, and why I don't even subscribe to it as a 'legitimate' outgrowth of the Glitch concept. That you CAN do something doesn't mean you SHOULD.

For me, Glitch is an escape, not a competition.

  • I've nothing against tree poisoning wars (we've had them before, we'll have them again.. and again. mostly with wood trees for projects.). My only thing is that, for new players looking for spice, it's great for them to find East & West Spice. I remember thinking I'd found heaven in Glitch - it was awesome. It's a fantastic (non-rock tutorial) intro to using the map & exploring and the sense of satisfaction you get from finding it pretty much on your own is great reinforcement. So I always get a bit sad when the tree wars hit those areas. Please don't.

Perhaps a better choice would be bean or bubble trees which hurt higher level players a bit more. Plus, it'll be more of a global war than one fought out on just a few streets.
Posted 15 months ago by Vera Strange Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think this unrest may be due to the sudden surge in population. Maybe now theres alot more of the population who are against tree poisoning for no reason. Perhaps they just want to come on and play the game in a relaxed way and know where everything is (Farmville-esque).

O well, I think it's obvious from this thread now that it's going to be just an argument of opinions. Theres nothing more to be said really.

  • Welp, if the staff are saying "hey, it's ok, it's just politics/social change", then I'm not impressed.  I *like* the fact that this is a generally nice game.  I *don't* want to pvp and all that crap.  I took my subscription money out of two other games to migrate over here for just that kind of reason.  I don't get it, if tiny speck can't decide if they want this to be a pvp free-for-all or not, then I don't think I want to subscribe.

"Just wanted to say this: the discussion here has been fascinating, and the fact that people are ready to roll their sleeves up to talk about this is *why* our community is so great, in my opinion. I don't want to pay to play politics.  I do that all the time IRL.  Room for counterefforts works fine if you have players who have the money to buy antidote to do all this stuff, and the time.  If you want to do this kind of thing, make pvp zones so those of us who only have so much time to play in a day won't have to run around waiting for trees to regrow  just to get our skills up.  This just sounds like a bad way to drive the auction economy nuts.

  • Ironically, I just swept through Ix and found the exact opposite had happened.  Not a single gas plant to be found.  They've all been converted to spice.  Ix is Spiceland!
Posted 14 months ago by Joojoo Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @nosferatutu the whole point of the game is the idea that we can build the world however we want to. "you're inside their thoughts, go and make them bigger" etc. so invariably, people are going to disagree about what should be grown where, how each area should develop, etc. i definitely wouldn't call that PvP, and it doesn't mean this isn't a nice game. but to be honest, politics/social change will exist in any MMOG for this exact reason. we all have differing opinions and want different things out of the game.

  • I think tree poison should be removed and we should never die and have infinite energy and full mood all the time, and remove the rooks because that's evil conflict, and while we're at it let's take out the leaderboards and achievements because that creates competition and politics.

When IX is all gas, I harvest all gas. When It's all spice, I harvest all spice.  In the meantime I have popcorn and I watch the foolishness of people replanting one type of tree.

Fact: I cannot understand why there would be people whining about losing interest in the game or how this is a bad idea. Glitch has reached a very, very good balance of PVE and sandbox gameplay (sorry to bring MuMORPGer lingo to the table) so why would we resista potentially fun event that takes full advantage of possibilities in Glitch?

If you don't like it, fight back! Do something cool! Roll up your sleeves and save some Spice Trees! Have...fun? Is that what it's called?

  • Just because you can do a thing, does not always mean you should. While the game mechanics do allow for this, there are better targets. (bean trees!)

Staff are right, this is a political issue, and it's one that should be solved by the players. The mechanics support this, so no amount of posturing about how wrong it is will ever win the argument. Fact of life: sometimes one person's fun = another persons detriment.

Now, that said: the person who started this thread, had only fun in mind. This happens to be a sort of fun he and some others have said they would enjoy, fair enough. I happen to not kill trees unless I need to. That's just me. It's how I roll. My theory of what's cool to do, (plant and nurture) does not negate what other people feel it's cool to do within the context of the game mechanics (kill spice trees). Whether you are for or against...is really not relevant here. It's a moot point every time one of these discussions comes up for any game out there.

What is an important argument to make, and it's been glossed over, or at least...been given short shrift: you shouldn't punch the new folks. Poisoning trees is fine. Growing trees is fine. But much talk has been made about fostering "the community we want"...to that end, whether you like poisoning or nurturing..the discussion that should be going on is: how do we have such a war without punching the new comer.

When new people come to a game, sometimes a game has 15 or 20 minutes to "make it's case" with the new player. If the new player cannot find a needed commod, or something to get the "oh yeah" feeling from completing something...they will leave. I know, some of you will say...great, less newbies. But, new players = new ideas, new participation, and...on a larger scale: new revenue for Tiny Speck. Fun should be had by all, but I would like to think even the Thread Starter did not have punching new players in mind when he started the thread.

If you want to foster a tree war, great. How about some community values regarding it? Perhaps try to agree on an actual plan on where and what should be done, and how. What should be off limits (for the good of the new folks), so as not to completely leave new players without needed things. In the end, that's what everyone on this thread seems to want: to exercise the ability to create the community you want. But it requires cooperation, and not unilateral statements as to why one person's fun is wrong. This is the kind of conversation that brings out "I'm actually more right than you are" styles of discussion. It's not conducive to solving the issue, and just steels the resolve of all sides to stick to their guns.

    Just my $0.02. =)

  • @Some_Random_Guy - Good plan of course, if you have it, do it, if you want to do something, you can, but just realize that people will also be annoyed by those who deliberately try to do a specific thing, for example this could be countered by everyone deciding to buy out houses in a single street and all plant their type of trees in their backyard and get together to allow anyone entrance when needed. Or they could just keep replanting, whatever. :)

@Parrow - Are you kidding? There's a single enemy, who isn't really a serious threat, and can easily be avoided, no way for anyone who wants to troll (or be on the badside, whatever) to help him out, this isn't fun because there is a single enemy and he's static, there are no drones of his to go against us, occasionally you might smuggle and deal with Deimaginators or other such small quest things, but there's really nothing in the grand scheme of things to go against except the Rook and other people's ideals, and other people's ideals is by far the worst of the two.

  • Basically, we need roleplaying to make this work. It doesn't seem like anyone wants to do it out of intention, but if you ever seen groups that love gas or spice or whatever, then make it a group that makes an impact on the world. If anyone sees you poisoning a tree and they flip out, make it sound like you're just apart of the group's plans, tell them to take it up with "the boss" if they got a problem.
