chicken overpopulation problem?

Do chickens last forever? It seems to me that there is currently no way to move/remove chickens from anywhere, will they eventually die? Or will every street eventually be the home of dozens of chickens? It doesn't seem like they need to eat either, which means that they could survive pretty much anywhere.

  • Chickens are sparrows wearing the Chicken outfit from the wardrobe.

  • It is my understanding that Chickens are the cockroaches of Glitch.  They don't die.  Where you see one, there are many (or soon will be).  And even though you don't care for them, they still survive.

Butterflies don't have to be cared for either, but I believe they have a lifespan, and overcrowding will also cause them to die.  Piggies can be napped or simply die off from malnutrition.  But Chickens, unfortunately, have no mechanism to cull the population.

  • I think they die after being used (squeezed) enough. I think all animals do (not 100% sure, but believe I remember seeing a dev post stating all animals); butterflies are just the fastest to die. Maybe chickens are the slowest.

  • Chickens are rats with wings.

I can't feed a chick in the ancestral lands though, so I don't think they can live anywhere.

  • Chicken deaths, can I have it?

  • I don't know if there's a Gianty rationale for it but I have definitely observed chickens on public streets vanish into thin air several times (primarily noticeable because I thought I was hatching eggs under them).

Haven't had any of my animals at home disappear as yet.

  • I have seen a chicken go poof on a street before. They die I guess, but a lot longer than butterflies.

  • we should do a chicken experiment, but what street to do it on

  • 1.  Chickens do have a lifespan and will eventually go to a "better place".
    2.  Overpopulation of chickens on a street makes them "sad" and they will migrate to other streets.
    3.  You can "release" your own chickens.
    4.  There are badges that require the production of numerous animals.  Multiply that by 30,000 people, more or less, and we would soon be up to the top of the highest mountain in animals!  Don't worry!  It hasn't happened and won't.  The Giants will take care of the problem.

  • Brib Annie, can you point to staff posts regarding 1 and 2?  Or can elaborate on how you know this to be the case?

  • A forum search isn't that difficult.
Here's the answer for (2), Joojoo.

  • And finding (1) didn't take much longer..

  • And now that I had some time to find what I was remembering to back up what I said earlier, from some July test notes posted by kevbob:

    Butterflies and Chickens Lifespans:
The world can get overpopulated fast with butterflies and chickens hanging around and cluttering up streets. But, the Giants now grant them some sweet relief: once a chicken or butterfly has fulfilled its Glitchy destiny by providing sustenance and wisdom to enough players, it will ascend to a Higher Plane of Being. Salute these noble creatures, for they gave themselves for us to play!

ETA: No, searching isn't hard. But sometimes one does not have the time to deal with the mess that searching in these forums is.

  • @ Natalia: "Chickens are rats with wings."

That's a line from The Big Chill. The original refers to bats instead of chickens.

  • thanks for the info, caley...it would be much more appreciated without the extracurricular comments about effortless forum searching, though.

And for the record, the link you provide is to a post 5 months old, while this game was still ever-changing in Beta.  It may still be valid, but it could have also changed.

  • @BarryW: "That's a line from The Big Chill. The original refers to bats instead of chickens."

Actually it is from the Woody Allen movie Stardust Memories (1980) and referred to pigeons as being rats with wings. It predated The Big Chill by 3 years.

  • ACTUALLY, it's from Finding Nemo, where they refer to the seagulls as rats with wings.
With a ridiculous Aussie accent which makes it 1000 times more amusing. =D

  • I don't think that's quite as old as the others. :P

  • @Liza Clearly, I'm referring to the black-and-white 1950s movie 'Finding Nemo', which tells the tale of a young boy in 1939 who is separated from his father by the outset of WWII. It's an a heartwarming tragi-comedy that will have you laughing and crying in equal parts as you follow his epic journey from humble beginnings to an ultimately deeply rewarding and fulfilling conclusion.

Specifically, the part where he gets eaten by seagulls.

  • So it looks like the answer is to keep squeezing chickens?

I'm happy to do that, as I eat 250 grains at a time to get energy. Chickens thus become an easy source of food (once you have a high enough Animal Kinship level, of course.)
