A Noob Perspective

Playing through for the first time there are a few things that have come as an annoyance, making it hard to get into certain aspects of the game.

1. Inventory space: I may just be slow, but it took me until level 7 to realize I could easily buy a bag (among other items) for increased inventory space. This would have been useful information either in the tutorial, or perhaps a lvl 3 quest to obtain one (unless it exists and I overlooked it somehow).

2. Finding things: It would be infinitely useful to have the locations of things such as patches of dirt, rocks to mine, certain types of trees etc more readily available. Perhaps have a way of seeing the locations (at least general area) on the tooltip when hovering over an active item in the quest log. Another idea would be to have a list of them in the encyclopedia somewhere (searchable would be nice too). The most annoying one, which I still haven't managed very many of, is patches of dirt. I wanted to do the timed quest that requires digging but I could only find two or three patches of dirt in the Groddle Heights.

3. Real Estate: I haven't found it yet, but if there isn't some sort of real estate listings somewhere, there should be. It would be very nice to what locations have estate for sale. Since I haven't had a chance to buy a place yet, I'm not sure what all it gives you, but if it doesn't, a personal garden would be amazing.

Thanks for reading my topic, hopefully this gives some insight on troubles I've run into so far. Overall the game is amazing and very fun.

  • Stagmo, those are some good suggestions!  I agree with there being a quest or some way to introduce a player to the types of goods available, particularly bags or other tools, so that players have an idea what vendors sell what, and perhaps even have a quest to explain how to find vendors on the map so that players are more self-sufficient.

The patches of dirt quest is easy enough, I like that it makes the player find things because it helps the player explore!

There is a real estate page, on your home page at the very bottom there is a real estate link!

  • As for number 3: The Real Estate listings are a link on your home page, toward the bottom. It's divided by areas as well and shows you what the interiors look like as well as exteriors and what it has available space-wise. And lets you know if someone that lived there previously left animals and trees planted.

I think the first point would be nice to have something that points out you can get bags and such. I think I stumbled on it myself. The game is still developing so such quests might be in the works (if not, now they can be in the minds of the devs).

As for the second point, I'm not sure about that. I figured out that sort of stuff from exploring around, which is something I think is important to the game. Maybe it'd be better if the quest gave a tool tip on what sorts of areas might have those things you need or something- I.E. "You can most often find dirt piles in desert areas rather than forests."

  • This was my first time too, and I'd like to add that I wish I'd known much earlier that I could buy a house for the price of a bag.

There is a real estate listing at the bottom of the home page.

  • 1.  I seem to recall doing a Quest that involved getting a bag.  I might be wrong though.

    2.  Click on the Encyclopedia.  It's at the Top right.  Click on Locations to see a listing of all of them.  Also, if you use Firefox or Chrome, you can get Greasmonkey Scripts.  There are several.  One shows the Locations, another shows the nearest place to find things, etc.  There is a Greasemonkey thread in these Forums.

    3.  On your Home page, scroll down.  You will find a link to the Real Estate Listings both available and sold.

  • Thanks for the help. Yeah, I was reading through some FAQ and hadn't thought to look at my homepage for the real estate listings. @Little Miss Giggles: I like your idea for the "sorts of areas".

I agree that exploring is important, and so far I've explored some interesting areas. I guess I haven't really run into desert areas yet, and perhaps that was my problem because I got the quest before visiting the areas where dirt is usually found. I don't know how that happened but good feedback from both of you regardless. Thanks!

  • Welcome to glitch, Stagmo :)

    1. There *is* a quest from the rock to obtain your first Generic Bag, though I don't know when it appears.

    2. The Locations greasemonkey script can help you find stuff, though it's admittedly not an official part of the game. You can find the script here: (http://beta.glitch.com/forum/general/3040/)
Also, for that timed quest, I think you can also dig dirt piles. Dirt piles are abundant in Kajuu and Andra.

    3. The realty page is at (http://beta.glitch.com/realty/). You can also access the realty page in-game from the drop down menu at the top right corner.

Edit: May I say that I find it awesome that we all answered together? :D

  • Thanks Stagmo!

Re (1) there is already a quest to get a bag pretty early on (I think level 2, though it could be level 3) ... you even get your money back at the end ;)

And, re (3) there is already this: beta.glitch.com/realty/ (still plenty of room for improvement, but it works).

Finally, re (2) that is a tough one — some of it will be in the UI, but we probably don't want every detail of the world available via the map … prehaps with certain "seer" skills you can see most things in locations nearby :)

  • stoot,

Re: (2), It'd be extremely nice to at least have the locations web page have a filter similar to the one that Dave's Greasemonkey script provides (as mentioned by Brib). I can understand not wanting to make the in-game UI too complicated, but at least the script modifies the page and provides you a drop down list, and filtering on a specific resource will only show streets with that resource.

It's a shame that you need to install something user created to give you something that I would consider basic. It doesn't take any challenge out of the game, and the amount of frustration you would be saving new players (and old ones) would be significant.

If you haven't used the newest version of the Locations script yet, it is easily the single most useful thing available to me. I'd like to see it be part of the site itself.

    Install it today, profit tomorrow!

EDIT: for those curious, here is a cap of modified page when using the script (notice the upper right corner) imgur.com/baNij

  • I do wish Realty was at the top of the page.

  • @ Joe Blow: +1 When I first started playing in March, there were just 7 regions. Now there are 15, plus the 3 Nostalia areas. The script can't keep up. Mine only goes to 688 locations whereas the Leaderboard shows +900.

  • Agreed, Nanookie, and I'd want the auctions page linked there as well.  A lot of new players don't know that the auctions exist, and the auction-related quest comes after learning a fairly advanced skill.

  • A lot of new players don't know that the entire drop-down menu exists - maybe this is something that could be mentioned in the opening tutorial or an early relevant quest.

I felt so very stupid when I finally found out there was a drop-down menu, how could I have missed that? Maybe at the end of the tutorial, right before you enter that newbie-street with the spinach, juices and music block, the Rock could give a quick overview of everyting that's on the screen. Highlight it and tell what it does. "This is your inventory. Need more space? Buy a bag or a bigger bag from a hardware vendor" "Here's a list of chat channels. Group channels and your friends also appear here" "Here's a drop-down menu, click it! Now you can acces bladieblablabla" You get the point :)

  • About bags, I didn't realize you could give someone a bag just by dragging it to them, and I was trying to open a bag and dragged it to a player. It was full of everything I had in the world at the time, and luckily the player was nice enough to give it back. But if she hadn't? Well, I'm just glad it's beta and it was just newb stuff!
Also, I may be wrong, but I tried to get rid of--I think--the alchemy bag? And I couldn't sell it or drop it, nothing. It seems to be glued to me. Don't know if that's a bug, or a feature.

  • Uh...there's a drop-down menu?

  • I LOVE Little Miss Giggles ideas.  Instead of altering how the map works, maybe just include little hints in the quests (I know this is already done, but perhaps a big stronger hints for some of the lower level quests).

  • Another noob here. Yeah, what is this about a drop-down menu?

This weekend was my first time playing, and it was fun!!

But here are my issues, for what they're worth.
    1) I had a visual problem, I wear glasses so maybe this wouldn't bother other people. If I am looking at my avatar everything is fine, but if I don't focus on my avatar while also walking, like looking around to see what is ahead of me to interact with, then everything looks completely kerflooey, and it's disorienting.
    2) I do remember a quest that told me to get a bag, but my biggest issue revolves around not having enough storage space. (I didn't know that you could get a home for the same price as a bag, though I did see the realty listings, I only noticed the more expensive listings. Maybe a way to sort for the lowest cost would help? But I also don't yet know anything about having a home and/or if that would help with my storage issue.) I was wandering around, still just trying to figure out this world, and 3 times completely ran out of storage space. You collect stuff that you come across, buy tools that you need, have to make new things, nice players give you stuff, and you receive some things randomly. Before I knew it I was out of space again, and much of my game time was consumed by trying to figure out how to make enough currants to buy another bag. Usually this involved doing quests where I needed to buy or collect more stuff which I didn't have room for, so I had to sell, drop or eat things that otherwise I would have wanted to keep. Maybe this is part of the game? But it did take up much of my game effort and currants, and maybe my time could have gone toward other things if I didn't have to worry about this.
    3) The beginning quests and tutorial do help you to learn how to get along, but compared to other games I've played, I think they could be improved upon. It was not so clear how to take care of myself, though I went to the wiki often and got info re. mood, energy and everything else. Sometimes my mood would drop a lot, sometimes energy, sometimes both, and I still don't have any understanding of why, or what the best ways are for a noob to deal with this. I got better at it, and I'm sure that non-noobs must know what to do just fine, but especially when I was starting out, I had to stop playing and wait for a new day to replenish myself. This may not be a good way to first introduce Glitch to new players. If you're interested enough to keep playing, and you have to stop, then your interest might go to something else.

But overall, great world! I totally intend to come back. I figure I'll never be a complete noob again, so if I want to report about my noob issues now is the time.

  • The drop down menu is at the top right corner of the game screen, next to the game-time clock. It has your face and name on the button; click on that and you'll find a bunch of links that open in a new tab or window.

It took me a while to find it too, so when I greet a new player, I make sure I tell them about it. :)

@crowdedsky I too, was very preoccupied with getting better storage at the beginning. I find it's a part of the game, to build my bag-management skills :p

@Crucial It's a feature that you can't sell or donate any container. Or auction it.

  • I hate to say this stoot, but I think you're wrong...

There is indeed a quest that requires you to buy a bag, Enlarge Yer Slots. But I've been playing with a new character, she is level 5 and didn't get that quest yet. The quests that I did get include starting a new skill (start), getting an emo-bear (lvl2), activating spinach (lvl3), kissing with garlic breath (lvl4) and the rainbow run (lvl5).
    I've been keeping track :)

  • Oh, THAT drop down menu.   That is a bit of navigation that is only operative when the game is on...so I tend to forget about it when the game is off.  Sorry, no offense meant, little solo drop-down menu of Glitch.
