The New Things Unlocked by The First Test of the Feats System: Quoin Shards and Two New Quoin-Jumping Regions, Hoama and Kloro

Video Demo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hj4xW0pC_4c

To jump for a quoin is pretty fun, but if there are other players around you are often either acing someone else out of the quoin — or someone else is snagging it before you got there. Hmpf! We've always thought that all the climbing and leaping would be better as a collaborative activity. So, now it is a collaborative activity.

Here's how it works: whenever you collect a quoin with other people nearby, the quoin "shards" and fragments of it shoot off to the other nearby players.

You, as the initial collector of the quoin get the full value of the quoin (same as you would have before this feature launched, and same as you would today, if there was no one around).

The other players get a percentage of the quoin's base value (ranging from 5% to 50%, depending how close they were) multiplied by their normal quoin multiplier. These fragments do not count towards the daily quoin limit (but the initial quoin collected still does).

So, the bottom line is that the best result for everyone is to try to "keep to the flock" — the closer you are, the more value you get from each quoin. Sometimes you'll hit the quoin yourself and therefore get the most — other times you still get to wet your beak a little, and it doesn't take away from your daily limit. And, it turns out that trying to keep together is a lot of fun — it's been a hard thing to stop testing. (Note that anyone following another player is excluded from quoin-sharding … each player has to be controlling their own selves.)

This is the first iteration of quoin sharding — we intend to build on it quite a bit: adding rewards for hitting the quoins with larger groups, achievements for sharding, mini-games, a new party space and … more.

In addition, there are two new quoin jumping areas called Hoama and Kloro (like the original ones, Balzare & Roobrik, they are out in the Miscellaneous Islands).

Have fun!

  • So, the idea is that people will stage impromptu group quoin hopping expeditions?    Is there a group for this yet?

  • Wheeeee! So much fun. I love the new areas and jumping sooooo high on the trampolines! The shard effect is great too! TS, you never fail to amaze and delight me to no end!

  • Not sure why, but as Glitch has progressed, I have had more trouble with my computer keeping up, so group activities are unfortunately out. Even with one other person present, I have increased freezing and lag that necessitates fairly frequent reloads. I mostly stay on my home street and backyard and keep my exploring to really late/early early AM hours. However, that being said, I love all the new ideas and places to explore, the upgrade card places as well! The beauty and creativity is amazing and I so appreciate the artists and devs and of course, YOU stoot, who never take any credit, but who I know in my heart is the driving force behind the constant desire to improve and exceed our wildest expectations! Thank you ALL of you at TS, even those behind the scenes, problem solving and checking out if things are working right (No glory for those poor souls, but how we NEED them too)!

One more thing, and I so hate to close on a negative note after I tell you how much I love you guys, but I really DO agree with Avery (first post) that I am also finding it very difficult to find the Qurazy Quoins in the new areas and almost impossible to get to in some cases. I think that the high iMG quoins are a perfect thing to hide or put in difficult places, but for those of us that are just exploring and maybe don't have the skills of some of the younger more nimble of finger, it would be nice to have them just along the road somewhere as you go.

Thanks again for all your hard work and creativity! (((TS)))

  • This is a great idea. I was hating how the game was becoming less group focused. When I started playing this game, almost a year ago the spirit of team-work, community building, and sharing was the most amazing thing I had experienced and I loved it, and ultimately continued because of it. I have trailed off here and there over the last few months but now the new developments and changes to the general climate (attitude) of the game and the impact that has had on the way we have played has begun to reignite my love for all that is glitchy.

I hope the shards only affect players who aren't AFK otherwise we'll see hordes of sleepers camped out by high value quoins getting free stuff in Glitch while they're off in another room doing something else.

  • I do share a minor quibble with several others.  Perhaps it's just a function of my middle-aged eyes, but Qurazy Quoins are particularly difficult to see in Hoama.  It's not as much of a problem in Kloro--they stand out better against the darker background.

I Iove the trampolines!  Sharding is fun, but I'm running into some desync issues that can make it tricky to coordinate.

  • Very cool new places.  I was wondering what the blue platforms did.  I got it that the red/maroon ones are trampolines, but it seemed like the blue ones should do something also, but never figured out anything.  Thanks!

  • Let me add a comment that I, too, find that Qurazy Quoins are hard to see in Haoma, too. I spent about ten minutes looking for one while doing a Completist run and gave up on it.

  • I love these new areas, and wanted to give a big thumbs up to all of you who worked so hard on this and everywhere else. It would be fun to host an event in these areas to show people how much fun it can be to do things together. We need any and all things that bring back the sense of community which I think is such an important and wonderful part of the Glitch experience. Again, wonderful job, Glitch always leaves me with a big smile and an awesome sense of calm. Thankyou!

  • I saw what I assume was an AFK player on a trampoline today.  I stood there watching them for a few minutes and they just bounced constantly without moving in any direction other than directly up and down.  I hope this is not an exploit of the no-AFK-sharding rule?  Should trampolines maybe stop working after the third bounce (on the same one), or similar?

  • I like this new feature that encourages more social play. But my computer has also been struggling to play glitch recently, it's just slowly getting more laggy and less responsive, and my fan goes hard out most of the time glitch is open now. So I don't see how I'll be able to join in, playing is annoying enough as it is. The sad thing is, my computer is actually pretty new and decent (less than six months old, intel i5 processor, decent amount of ram and other memory, etc). If this machine can't handle the game then the range of people who can play everything to its full must be shrinking.
Posted 95 days ago by shelleycat Subscriber! | Permalink
  • shelleycat, that must be a software problem. I've got a lot older computer and, while it does sometimes lag at GoC or in house, the game is still very playable.

  • Whoa. I sharded when I read about this new feature!
Posted 94 days ago by Chinny the Unlikely Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Just my 2 quoins:

On sharding: I like the idea of sharding, but I feel it's almost punishingly skill-based.  Let me be clear: I play this game at five frames per second.  This isn't New Super Mario Bros.  It's not even Maple Story.  It's a flash game in a web browser.  Careful, accurate jumping should not be a consideration.  90% of Glitch is super-forgiving and casual.  So every time it tries to sneak a little hardcore into the mix, whether through irreversible choices, unexpected execution challenges, or a mechanic that rewards the type of gameplay it usually tries to punish, I always feel surprised.  If I could play this at 60 frames per second, such surprises would be a welcome change of pace.  Of course, you could retain all the dubious social value and fun factor of quoin sharding with none of the frustration if you just let us shard while Following.

  • As for the new areas, while I like the concept of the bouncy red mushrooms, I hate the fact that they're mandatory.  I keep a stack of spinach in my inventory at all times just so I can cheat my way through all of Glitch's jumping puzzles.  But this doesn't work on Red Mushrooms, because sometimes you're trying to go down, and there's a Red Mushroom you can't see beneath you, because the camera's too slow, so it bounces you up in the air before you can even see what you hit.  Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 tries to stick a landing after being bounced multiple times, sometimes you get stuck on a ledge and have to start your descent over... it's just really aggravating.  Combine that with the fact that there are tons of other players exploring these areas, and you've got a recipe for lag soup.

Ascending can be annoying, too, when there's a kinda high up red mushroom you need to hit and the only way to it is through a 3-step jumping puzzle, but at least then you can usually spinach through it.

My suggestion to solve all of this?  Put some ladders on the sides.  That way players with low frame rates who just want their Completionist badges aren't forced to work around the peril of the Hidden Red Mushrooms, while those lucky few with an excellent frame rate who can actually rise to the challenge of hitting or not hitting a Mushroom will still have the option of bouncing all over the place and having fun.

Also, like other forest maps, the routes are hard to see because the background is too busy.  Simply make the roads more opaque, and you could solve this on all the maps, everywhere, even maps that haven't been released yet.  It's especially bad in Kloro.  No dotted lines, no solid lines... if it weren't for the street names, I wouldn't even know where I'm supposed to click.

  •  if you just let us shard while Following

That would be a recipe for people to just follow someone, go off to make some tea, do the housework walk the dog and come back to stupid amounts of quoins
Posted 93 days ago by shhexy corin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • You would be able to get the completionist badge while following, though.  So you could do that!
Posted 93 days ago by shhexy corin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm still having what I guess are sync issues sharding. I've hit quoins with another player almost on top of me and it didn't shard. I can only conclude that the server's idea of our relative positions didn't agree with my screen. Is anyone else seeing this or am I imagining things?
Posted 93 days ago by Lucille Ball Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Just another vote that the qurazy quoins in Hoama are very difficult to see. I got the Kloro completionist  badge in no time, but the Hoama badge is taking for ever because I have to scan inch by inch for those suckers.

  • That would be a recipe for people to just follow someone, go off to make some tea, do the housework walk the dog and come back to stupid amounts of quoins

Because there totally isn't one of those in Madhur Hathur already.

At least someone else would need to confirm the follow and take the time to lead you around in order for the exploit to work. It'd be fun! You'd be partners in qurime!
Posted 93 days ago by mostlyArmless Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Well, maybe they need to fix that then
Posted 93 days ago by shhexy corin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The poster child for painful jumping puzzles in Kloro has got to be Pholiota Squarros.  Just TRY to go from Pholiota Squarros to Laccaria Quadrata.  The bottom-right corner of the map is like one of those carnival games where you try to throw a ball in a cup, but it's rigged.

I've tried ascending and descending, I've tried stepping off the ledge and then changing direction in midair.  I've tried walking off the opposite ledge and missing the red mushroom to land on the other ledge below.  Spinach is no good because there's a ledge over the whole thing.  Only way I can figure out is to go around using different streets, which of course entails pushing my way through awkward jumping puzzles at 5 frames per second on a bunch of other streets.

Is this intentional?  Is the map designer just trying to be cute?  If so I find this incredibly mean-spirited.  I don't feel like this is a tricky logic puzzle to "figure out" and overcome.  I feel like I know what I need to do and the game just won't let me DO it because fiddly jumping is fiddly.
