Glitches Against Greed (GAG)

This is a call to arms! Fill Neva Neva and Ajaya Bliss with as many butterflies ad glitchenly possible! The greedy actions and economy ruining actions of a small percentage of Glitches threatens to ruin Ur for us all. Before you get angry, please consider the wisdom of my gnome - "If you have to ask, you'll never know!"

  • "If you want to have fun instead of trying to go Scanners on my head, form an organization against me."

the big problem with that is that there's nothing anyone can do once you've put butterflies in the mines, other than wait for them all to die. which is also what separates what you're doing from the tree wars, and is the difference between mischief and plain old griefing.

    bring on them butterfly nets.

  • I'm not a miner and am happy to admit my ignorance.  Why/how do butterflies hurt miners?

I'd love to have butterfly nets though.  That'd be great.

  • *facepalm* Guys...go look up "griefer" and "troll." Then please, for the love of the giants, let this thread die.

  • Aye Candy:

They simply make mining more difficult by getting in the way of rock selection.

Generally it's, Enter (menu)--> Enter (rock as first choice)--> Enter (mining action).

When a butterfly gets in the way, it becomes the first choice in the menu and if you're in fast mining areas and not paying attention, you will end up doing something to the butterfly. If it is sing, it could be dangerous depending on your energy. If it is rename, then it is a PITA because suddenly you have a box open for inputting a name and have to close that out... then try to mine again. In such areas as the ones he's putting these in, you won't have a chance to mine again by the time you mess with that, as there are many people mining in a group effort.

Generally butterflies are not much of an issue in the majority of the mining areas where you might be mining mostly solo, or occasionally helping a person here and there. Slight annoyance, perhaps (as are the batterflies from time to time). But in these two specific areas, you have 20 people working together to mine one rock at a time (and generally having fun and lots of socialization while doing so). One hit is all you get most of the time.

I'm inclined to disagree with the OP's methods of bringing "controversy" or whatever the hell he's trying to call it, since, as stated by desdemona, there is no way to combat it except through double clicking your pick in the inventory which is faulty sometimes as there's a bug with the range of the pick (you'll have the rock highlighted but the pick tells you there's nothing to mine) or leaving until the butterflies die.

I didn't mind the spice/gas wars too much, as both sides could combat each other through poisons and antidotes.

Overall, though, I don't really care too much about this issue as it does not particularly affect me (I do my mining elsewhere). I've simply longed for a great while that we could choose our Glitch's focus or at least have immobile objects be the first highlighted option over moving objects.

  • Thanks for the information.  Hopefully the devs will call this griefing (it is) and, if it is actually done instead of just being suggested, make short work of the players in question.   I believe the community standard says is that if you play just to piss people off you can't play here.  I hope the devs follow through on that.

  • Uhm, thanks for the butterfiles :D

It saddens me that this was not done to cheer up the mines but to create conflict, somehow.

But i still like them in the mines. ^.^

  • I don't see how doing what the OP says or not doing makes much of a difference to me. People can do whatever they want in the game. Since I can't control either side, it really doesn't matter to me. There is plenty to do in Glitch. If something in an area bothers me, I go somewhere else (teleporting is great for that).
Posted 14 months ago by BarryW Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Thats a very strange post Barry. Of course what the OP proposes is not a problem to every single glitch, but it is a problem to many. If its not a problem to you thats great for you, but of no importance or help to those who do have an issue with it.
Second of all, the idea of burrying one's hand in the sand is silly. So if we move from a problem area to another, and then another, and then another, what exactly would we accomplish except limiting the game for ourselves? We will run out of streets to run to in the end. Ignoring a problem does not make it go away, it just makes it worse and encourages other problems to appear.
Posted 14 months ago by Merope Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It doesn't really affect me either, BarryW, nor are people suggesting that it would affect everyone. Just because it doesn't affect one or two people doesn't mean it's an invalid issue or sentiment.

  • This is awesome.

While I won't be participating for a couple of reasons, I don't see this as against the spirit of the game at all--and I think the broadly painted "For the good of the many!!!" tone of the OP is both hilarious and topical.

I guess it depends if you think of it as "in character" or "out of character"--and whether you think "in character" is a thing that exists in Glitch.

If they're all the avatars of human players who should behave politely and rationally, I can see how it's annoying... but if they're spirited, autonomous, wee big-headed people, then sure, some of them will cause a ruckus on a lark.

  • This is not an issue for me because i use the pick from the inventory so animals/people dont get in the way.  i recommend people mine this way until something is done about it, i dont think people should be forced to mine using one particular method.

I think there should be an option to toggle interactions with animals on or off. When its off, animals wouldnt show up in the menu and you couldnt interact with them. That way people can place animals in neva neva as they please without causing grief.

  • Pomegrandy hit the nail on the head, I reckon.  When I donated piggies, I didn't do it for the favor -- I did it because I was roleplaying a zealot who wanted to satisfy the Giants with blood.  This is a game about imagination, not being a fast clicker to maximize your currant value so you can translate that number to a collection of other numbers on a server somewhere.

  • If this was an actual problem, wouldn't the devs just fix it?
Posted 14 months ago by Lela Naomi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Umeboshi, since Glitch isn't a role-playing game (although you can role-play if you like), there's no reason for "many Glitches" to expect that behavior and certainly no reason for them to go along with it.
Posted 14 months ago by WindBorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • In any game I've been in, from full on text-based RPGs, to LARPS, to this one, there's always been "I'm just roleplaying" as an excuse for bad behavior.

In games where the consequences for your bad behavior can, in fact, be handed out that's fine. They often are.

The problem here is: this behavior has no in-game recourse, and the out of game recourse is basically "talk to the devs."  As far as I'm concerned, that makes this a troll for developer attention. I can't see any other way of looking at it at this point.

  • You know what, I gotta say that I found this thread hilarious at first, but then reading it again, I found quite a few responses to be abusive, sad and most likely in violation of the community guidelines. It is really uncool to be responding to a bit of mildly griefy shenanigans with such venom and malice.

And I say this as a mostly-miner who accidentally sung to a butterfly that got in the way of my pick last night. You know what I did? Laughed and slowed down the rate of my click-click-clicking so I could pay better attention to what I was doing. :P
Posted 14 months ago by katlazam Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I agree with Turbo Angst's post above me. Roleplaying is great and all, but not when it negatively affects other players or causes a negative game attention. The first point of a game is to have fun, and you can't violate other people's rights to that when you want to roleplay.
Posted 14 months ago by Reirei Umezaki Subscriber! | Permalink
  • LOL! This whole thread is nutty! batty! hi-larious!

Another thing about roleplaying -- you can't roleplay with people who aren't roleplaying. I mean, you can, but then you'd be harassing/entertaining someone, not roleplaying with them. Plus plus, it's totally unfair to start a game with someone who isn't interested in playing. "Oh, didn't you know? We were playing blackjack and I just won all your money, ahahahaha yay!" Sadface.

No thanks! If I want this game to be about mining, then it'll be about mining for me. If I want it to be about imagination, then it'll be about imagination. If I want it to be about roleplay... then it will! I'll find like-minded people and do my thing without trying to impose my perspective on other glitches, cos I think conformity is kinda lame, and being a bossy troll is even lamer!

  • When I read the above posts, it feels like people who are trying to have fun in the context of the game, enjoying the lore and the world that has been created (and that we continue to create), must take a back seat to those who want to play the mechanics of the game (increase currants, increase level) because there might be collision.  Because the RPers aren't playing the specific way suggested by the base mechanics, they must be wrong.

There's no way to win Glitch, no matter how many currants you have, no matter what level you are.  There's no end-game.  What do you do when you have a billion currants, the most expensive house, are level 60?  You either quit playing, keep going til you have a bajillion currants, race to the next level cap if/when they raise it... or you find a new way to have fun in the world, which will probably be some sort of role playing.  There was no user guide that came with this game telling us what the goals are -- that's for us each to figure out in the game world.
Posted 14 months ago by Zimmi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Zimmi - for most miners it's not about the currants, the items, the levels, or anything else obvious in the game.  (But we love all of it anyway ;-).  We are basically a bat sh*t crazy bunch.
Posted 14 months ago by dmnddgs Subscriber! | Permalink
  • "for most miners it's not about the currants, the items, the levels, or anything else obvious in the game"

It's definitely not about the currants, items, or levels.  It's Sparkly Rock Fever.  I say this because a 'bottom line' miner doesn't froth at the mouth about sparkly rock and skirt frantically around the beryl, metal, and dullite.

Maybe it's because the shiny element is an essential component of no-no powder.  Or are glitchies out there freebasing the shiny element directly now?
Posted 14 months ago by Parrow Gnolle Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Shiny element is for many compounds.. not just for no-no powder. Those of us making dusts need shiny elements for them... so it is is just NOT for the heavy miners. I don't use no-no powder and have never used no-no powder.... so don't look to all of as freebasing and being heavy no-no users.

  • As a card-carrying Ajaya addict, I would like to disabuse the notion that hardcore miners are greedy. I'm mostly there to chat. When I'm not mining, I'm donating or selling at the vendor - not loading up the AH. I do auction my gems, for cheap. I don't see how my actions are so offensive :p

Ajaya miners have a strong, fun community. I don't know why you'd want to try and grief us, but it doesn't really matter because it's not gonna work. Haters gonna hate!

So, you think you got what it takes GAG?  Then bring it glitch, but you better be bringing your best game 'cause we got no time for half-hearted attempts.  And any other glitch wanna try and harsh up our shine, go for it.  We can take you all on.
