Getting rid of Global Chat will ruin the community feel....

I really feel it will be a huge mistake to get rid of Global Chat.  It is the one thing that matter where you are, you can talk to anyone, newbie or oldie, at all times.  If this is removed, I think it will cause a huge amount of segregation, frustration, and isolation.

I think it is a sad move for the game to take this away.

  • The random interaction is one of the best things about the game!

However, it might not stay that way once Glitch opens its doors. Don't get me wrong -- I'm all about keeping the Global Chat the way it is. But I've played MMOs before, and the thing that always seems to happen is noobs begging for money and items all the time. It just becomes relentless. They're not nice about it, either. And it's like half the fun of any game is going through quests and earning all that stuff.

Then again, I've been in games where you can just turn Global Chat off, and the loot beggars just PM you, anyway. You know, there should just somehow be a system for that kind of tomfoolery. (And no, I'm not above helping people out. But I'm not going to just hand over items because you're a lazy jerk, either.)
Posted 15 months ago by girlthulhu Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I don't find the global chat useful at all, I prefer the local chat, because it provides context, if people are asking for items for a street project or help for a quest (e.g. last egg standing, peter out peat), I want to help, but as Hyaena said, I'm not interested in giving items away to every single lazy or newbie player and for help issues, there's a live help.

For random or social interactions, I still prefer to IM someone if I have something to say or the group chats, for chatting about a common interest.
Posted 15 months ago by Natalia Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I have yet, honestly, to ever see anyone begging for items in Global Chat, so I am not sure what you are talking about.

Global chat is choc-full of social interaction, though. It is where I learned the game, the most.
Posted 15 months ago by Innie✿, Obviously Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I completely agree.  The sense of community in Glitch is absolutely contingent on global chat, otherwise we are only ever running across mysterious notes from each other, which is an awful way to advertise a party or retain newbies.

If the concern is the insane traffic that would be global chat in a live setting, why not compromise with a regional chat?  I think we would see a lot of emergent behavior in that, with certain "neighborhoods" gaining reputations for this or that activity, much like how different regions already tend to have a proliferation of a certain type of tree.

I used to MUD years ago, and the various global channels and the people in them were really the only reason to do it.  You may be running around and slaying monsters and donning mad loot, but all that is background to the social web of global chat.  I still get a fuzzy feeling when I see someone run by whom I recognize from a wacky conversation the other day.  I'm more likely to ask them if they need a hand, or maybe just a sandwich.  It makes us a better connected, friendlier, more conscientious people.

Glitch has the most welcoming, positive, and (content-dense) chatty MMO community I've ever seen, and I really believe that the old school-style global chat is the primary reason.  And, if the copy's sense of humor and available achievements are anything to go by, that community spirit is something we want to keep around.

  • Innie, I didn't mean on Glitch. I haven't seen it here yet, which is a big reason why it's been such a great experience for me (other than the fact that it's, you know, an awesome game). But I've played other games where the loot begging got so out of hand that it was a dealbreaker. I didn't want to sign on anymore because it was so "noisy" in busy areas. Even if I didn't have the global chat function on, I would still get harassed for items and money through PM. Eventually, I just stopped playing.

So far, everybody I've met on Glitch seems really cool, and coming from a misanthrope like me, that's saying something. I genuinely like the community, and I'm actually getting brave enough to start posting on the forums (in fact, this is my first thread). But what we have here is more or less a closed ecosystem since Glitch is still in beta testing. When it opens, the dynamic is going to shift somewhat. I hope Glitch continues to attract quirky, intelligent, and mature people, but I'm sure some bad apples will surface.

If anyone caught my eight-part Notes on the Impending Apocalypse I left scattered around the Meadows (it's like an Easter egg hunt! With guinea pigs!), I really meant what I said at the end: I can't wait to see all of you on the other side of the Great Cleansing (err, reset) because you all seem like lovely people.
Posted 15 months ago by girlthulhu Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Oh, oh, um - gonna have to jump in and point out to Lukie that while I mostly agree with the thread's purpose, global chat is *not* a good place for questions - that's what Live Help is for (:
Posted 15 months ago by Cupcake Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Cupcake: can you imagine the amount of traffic Live Help will see once global chat is gone?  I know they added guides to Live Help to help control it, but imo the guides seem to make it even more crowded in Live Help.  There are a great great great number of questions answered in Global Chat, essentially filtering out the smudge (common, easily answered questions) and allowing Live Help to dedicate itself to more important issues
Posted 15 months ago by Laurali Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I know that Live Help will be there. But, honestly.....the number of questions we still see in Global Chat is still very high.  I dont consider asking "what do I do with this pick" as something that should be asked in Live Help.

As a user point of view, Live Help is something that will utilized more for bugs, stuck,  broken, etc.  Not just general "How do I..." "where can I..." "In this quest..." type of questions.  I just see no reason why the community can't keep the ability to help each other out with those.
Posted 15 months ago by Innie✿, Obviously Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Agreed with Innie and also adding: Asking and answering those types of questions fosters a sense of community, especially with the new people. It shows them what we're about.
Posted 15 months ago by girlthulhu Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Exactly Hyaena.  The community is why I love this game. I am just not sure how I will feel with it being gone.
Posted 15 months ago by Innie✿, Obviously Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Live help issues aside: I see no reason that the community can't maintain itself without Global Chat. I hardly ever use it, except to request an auction or the like (find it kind of annoying, TBH), but I'm very social, and still keep good friendships with many players.
Posted 15 months ago by Cupcake Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Cupcake: Global Chat is really the only way for many of us higher level players to meet new players.  Groups will be very cliquey and exclusive as global chat disappears and people begin using them much more, I forsee people getting removed from groups if so and so gets into a tiff with so and so.

Unless you have preexisting friendships with players before reset (which all the new players won't), losing global chat will be losing a great way to communicate and keep the community feeling strong
Posted 15 months ago by Laurali Subscriber! | Permalink
  • And then there is the limit on groups we can join, too.

Posted 15 months ago by Shoehorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I looked all over and could not find the quote Shoehorn (if anyone else can please link)  but Stoot has directly said multiple times:

"We will lose global chat after reset"
Posted 15 months ago by Laurali Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Right now, staff members and guides redirect quite a few of the Live Help posts to Global Chat.

Quest questions in particular, but also the newbie  philosophical  issues "What's the best way to level up?"; What's the best way to earn currents?";  "What's the best way to keep my energy up?"; "Where are the wood trees?".

Global is also used for alerting newbies about "last egg" trees.

If Live Help isn't going to be overrun with those questions, then we need a channel where they are appropriate.

  • global chat is good, but perhaps when there are more people logging on in the future, there can be multiple channels of general chat.
Posted 15 months ago by Samerina Subscriber! | Permalink
  • "Where do I find...", "How do I...", etc should join FAQ group.

General Chat, when Global is gone, should join Global Chat 2.0 group.

    That's my two currants.
Posted 15 months ago by Milolin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The main problem I have with Global Chat 2.0 is a player has control and remove people from the group. That bothers me, deeply.

I would much prefer an employee be the one in charge. They are much more biased.  (Not that I dont love DJoe.....just saying)

And then, we can only be in 20 groups.  I cant tell you how many groups I have had to quit, even ones I started...just to join another group.

  • Innie, you are the Queen of Global. :)
Posted 15 months ago by emdot Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Just wanted to say I agree with Kelly re: global chat and questing.  It's great to be able to ask if anyone else needs the quest, it's great for calling out for help on rooks, etc.  I just wish there was some way to encourage people to sign in to global chat BEFORE they need help, or to just wait and listen for a while instead of immediately popping in with a question that was just answered a minute before.  That's why I think global chat might not scale after beta.  It was so cool to see all the excitement about the Unnoticeable quest the other night, but it got so repetitive after a while seeing "what's up with these ghosts?"  I can't imagine how noisy it will be after the game opens.  Joining global 2.0 will keep me in touch with the folks I know I will miss, but it won't provide an avenue for other newbies to meet and greet in the same way that I have, and that would be a shame.
Posted 15 months ago by Varekai Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Groups is not an adequate solution to this problem for several reasons stated above, but since people keep suggesting them, here we go.

Problems With Groups In Place Of Global Chat
    1) New players do not know what groups are and it can be overwhelming to have to decide which groups to join without much guidance
    2) Players control who are and aren't in the groups, which has great potential to make groups just big cliques
    3) There is a limit to how many groups you can join, I find myself frequently leaving groups for new ones
    4) Higher level players won't have much contact with lower level players when we stick to our groups and spend our time in locked mining streets or working on street projects
    5) Players would have to join a group to be able to ask basic questions, and if there is a group just for noobs we would need dedicated players to monitor those channels to make sure the questions are being answered

I'm sure there are more problems with replacing global with groups, but those are just the ones I can think of right now!

  • what if "global" reduced to just the island your on, the three newbie locations of groddle make a nice chat channel... for an example
Posted 15 months ago by ICountFrom0 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I like the idea of isle of groddle opens a global chat. Or... maybe... Up to level 20 can join Global Chat - so, that give them an opportunity to develop a friendship of newbie players? Devs and Guides can join Global Chat regardless what level they are?
Posted 15 months ago by Milolin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I like global chat the way it is now.  I occasionally tune it out when it's annoying, but it's the only place where you can find everyone.  I agree with the opinion that it will change the community for the worse to remove it.  I wouldn't mind regional chats as well, but as an additional option, not a replacement.
Posted 15 months ago by KhaKhonsu Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I really like global chat and I especially like that it is open to everyone. As others have said, as a new Glitchen, I would use it to scan what was going on Glitch-wide.  When I had minor questions or needed clarifications, posting them to global chat would get immediate results and often result in a new friend.  I learned about street projects by scanning global chat.  I realized that there are areas of Glitch I felt needed to explore because of global chat.  Rook attacks first caught my attention through global chat.  And I have been able to help countless other Glitchen through global chat.  Yes, there are a lot of comments passed back and forth through global chat that just do not interest me, are annoying to me, or I feel are just general chit chat - but the great thing is I can make a decision to ignore that stuff and just let it flow past me.

I really do not want to have to be a part of a 'group' called Global Chat - nor do I think that global chat should be replaced by 'regional' chats.  It is fun to be able to have a glimpse into a cross-section of our Glitch world and have an idea of the world news - news of our entire Glitchen community.

I didn't realize that global chat might go away.  I sincerely hope that does not happen.  Part of the fun of the game is the ability to interact with different people from all over the world.  Please do not let that be restricted.  Please allow global chat to remain as it is now.

  • Global Chat is the cat's pyjamas... I am addicted to it and love it...I guess we  have to see what the devs do.. It is their choice and their decision. What is the reason to stop it , anyway, when the games goes public?

  • Stoot has said, for quite some time, that Global Chat "doesn't scale well".
Posted 15 months ago by WindBorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • See, I disagree with "it doesnt scale well". I have been in way too many games for way too many years that had global chats, with thousands of players, at once.  What about it does he feel does not scale well?

Like Miss Tara...It was through Global Chat that I learned about the rooks, the street projects, etc. Without that, I would not have known to join the groups.
Posted 15 months ago by Innie✿, Obviously Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I have learned so much through global chat, and at higher levels when quests get thin global chat is a nice way to get ideas for interesting things to do and places to see you may have missed before. Also there's a great deal of genuine peer helping going on there, which really enriches the community. Killing global chat will make the game less fun for the folks who use it.

  • @Innie: I see what you are saying, Maybe I should take an oath, no one will be kicked without group consensus.
Posted 15 months ago by Djoe6897 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Djoe: Even with group consensus, it will end up being more like a clique of people then an open arms community.

I understand what Stoot means about Global not scaling well as it is currently designed, why don't they just make changes to it so that it would scale well?  Like Innie said, there are plenty of games that have a Global Chat with thousands of people talking on it, why can't it be made to work for this game?
Posted 15 months ago by Laurali Subscriber! | Permalink
  • "there are plenty of games that have a Global Chat with thousands of people talking on it"

I'd love to hear some examples. I've not played any MMOs with chat size over a couple of hundred.
Posted 15 months ago by Bees! Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Fair enough. Upon more thought, they are probably several hundred on an over populated WoW server, on just one side.  I know of a couple of their servers where the alliance side has 1.5k users (poor horde side had like 300-400).  I was on one of those servers for 2 years, we had no problems with global chat, until Christmas time.

Rift servers global chat can get very busy, but I can not give you a count of user base per server, considering they have not released that info.
Posted 15 months ago by Innie✿, Obviously Subscriber! | Permalink
  • wow does not have global chat, it has linked chat between 10 or so cities with the potential for 1000 or more (i remember being in login queues over 1000 so the server certainly held that many or more) in those areas but that's never the case. even so that linked chat (trade chat) can be so incredibly annoying, i have turned it off many times. having it available is certainly a good thing though. will glitch have some limit to simultaneous connections? or different servers? what's the population now?
Posted 15 months ago by mogley Subscriber! | Permalink
  • "I know of a couple of their servers where the alliance side has 1.5k users (poor horde side had like 300-400).  I was on one of those servers for 2 years, we had no problems with global chat, until Christmas time."

if Glitch only ends up with 1.5k players, they're screwed.
Posted 15 months ago by striatic Subscriber! | Permalink
  • yeah, wow's biggest channels (trade, lfg) are limited to single-faction within a capital city. and realms don't have many simultaneous players. 1k is just about ok, 10k or 100k would be pretty terrible. hub or maybe wider zone-chat (e.g. groddle island) could work well, depending on standing population within the hubs. i'd assume you take houses (and instances) out of those channels

(i'm not in charge of this, just making some observations!)
Posted 15 months ago by Bees! Subscriber! | Permalink
  • So about Global Chat...yeah, what Bees! said. We love Global Chat too and wish it could be preserved, but even now conversations can sometimes stream so quickly that it's already difficult to read back if you've missed something. Imagine that with more, many more.

But we *also* think that the community is pretty much one of the greatest things Glitch has to offer, and want to make it possible for newbies who need help learning the ropes to interact with more traveled players who want to offer up the experience they've earned. This is really what Live Help is going to be about - we'll have more "channels" in the future, and the Guides will mostly be stepping in to answer the hard questions no one else is chiming in on.

And then there's local chat, these very forums, and groups, as many of you have already mentioned. Keeping these avenues open to participation from new players will take an effort from everyone involved in this game, the staff included.

Because an Ur where you couldn't just splank everybody who wandered past you on the street would be an Ur in need of some lovin'.
Posted 15 months ago by Blanky Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'd love for global chat to stay the same, but anyone who understands how big these MMO games can become, it'd be insane to have a single global chat once Glitch is available to a ton of people. It works well in beta test, but it will not be possible when it's the real deal, as much as we wish it was.
