Elections to Office?

I'm in class right now and am struggling deep within to resist the urge to play, even though I know I won't be able to again until after the game closes and reopens (whine whine). But this has been on my mind passively for a while and with the game closing sometime today maybe this can elicit some thoughtful discussion to occupy our downtime.

Something that has been talked about before, but maybe glossed over in the scramble for launch, is the possibility of electing our own representatives to political offices. This absolutely is fascinating to me. How would it work? What kind of power would our reps hold? Maybe we could have regional or continental offices. Is this what the elusive voting system could be used for?

Thoughts.

ETA: I know this is not what the votes are for. I meant it silly-ly.

  • Omjeebus I want to be mayor of Gayville, if and when one can ever be designated. xD

  • Not that I'd like to pander to any stereotypes, but I'd hope that whoever gets to be in charge of Gaysville will have a slightly more elaborate, dare I say (dare! dare!), fabulous title?

  • I get to be Health Commissioner!

But seriously, I think the idea of Glitch politics is a great idea. The hard part is not seeing them officially implemented (I believe the game is broad enough for us to do it ourselves), but deciding on positions: Mayor (or Governors) of regions? President of Ur? Board of Health? Fire Brigade?

    And all to what end?

Once we answer those questions we just might be on our way to, in Deadwood terms, 'forming a f*cking government'! Who'll bring the peaches?

  • Lol mungo, I agree, but I didn't want to seem TOO over the top since I talk about it so much anyway. xD

  • No offense to anyone but...IMHO the minute Glitch implements or allows politics/political offices/people in charge of other people is the minute I will stop playing.  The main reason I play is to get away from all of that stuff in RL.

  • Nothing prevents any player from bestowing any "title" to their name.

  • No one will be IN CHARGE of anyone. We're not owning slaves, here. We're just asking to be the faces of a certain area. :D

  • I have already mentioned this in chat, but I declare myself the princess of pork, sovereign of swine, baroness of bacon.  Coincidentally, I am also the marquess of marmalade, but that is unrelated to my status as owner of ALL THE PORK.

  • Can we declare ourselves officially anarchist in-game? I wouldn't mind elected offices, as long as there is an option not to have to take part in politricks if you choose not to.

  • @Varekai, Ha! You have all the pork but mine! Mine swine! That said, grant me a few favors & I'll gladly hand over a little pork barrell...

  • Despite the naysayers and gainsayers I think this could be really fun! Being an incessant Tolkien nerd, I think what sprang to mind when I first read this post was something more akin to the Mayor of Michel Delving in the Shire; he's really just there to help solve problems and serve as a figurehead. The Hobbits wouldn't listen to him if he ever tried to assert his (largely ceremonial) power.

I think the same idea applies to Glitch. Elected officials would have no real power or control over players, but would hopefully serve the community in some way and otherwise provide a new venue for entertainment with Ur (some people like elections and schmoozing and giving speeches and the like).

Would anyone like to try and organize this or is there too much resistance and bother?

The latter is probably true, but should we attempt this I might suggest a confederation of the various regions of Ur with elected representatives (each with his/her own fun title). But what would the responsibilities be?

  • Absolutely no to reps from me - bad idea and pointless - but yes to referendum as per the subscriptions.

  • I am NOT interested in having politics in the game. Like celticlady, I will speak for myself, thank you.

  • Elections?! What!  That would be silly. Everyone knows that power doesn't come from the people. Power comes from the Giants, who by the way, personally speak to me and told me I should represent their holiness as Grand Pope Lama Mobbes XI!             ((o(*゚▽゚*)o)))

  • Politics?...I prefer the balance of my heart's innerGlitch with my mind, being in balance with myself empowers me to be in harmony with others - my community, my UR.

Politics got nothing to do with balancing head and heart.

  • it's an odd idea.

i've seen it implemented elsewhere a long time ago on Jennifer Government / NationStates.org [http://www.nationstates.net/] and it is very messy. real life politics enters into it very quickly, even when the created laws or authority have no actual power over the players.

it *might* work if it was implemented on a group level though, since people can choose to leave the group and there's more of a social contract and the opportunity for drafting a constitution. constitutions are really super important as a political framework to keep a continuous, stable cultural thread despite shifting administrations.

voting might also work as a player generated thing, with people submitting votes by dropping notes into a pile. for a purely ceremonial role, i think that'd be more fun and more flexible to play around with and with lower stakes than an OFFICIAL GLITCH POLITICAL SYSTEM harrumph harrumph : ]

  • I agree. Clearly the reaction to any kind of "officially unofficial" government is hostility, so maybe something like the now-defunct "Imperium of Ur" or "Kingdom of Ur" would be more fun and feasible.

A kind of RP group for politicking and such.
