reputation ratings

This might be more an idea for a player project....

But in light of things like MicklePickle's proposed moving business, things like Glitch National Bank, and other player businesses (yes, even the Lumber Co furor), I wonder how if/how reputation ratings could be implemented--

whether as YetAnotherPlayerProject, or using something in game. Or both.

That way, before entering into a trust-based transaction with a player, someone could see what other's experiences were. Say, before, you ship some goods to someone more conveniently located to a project or a street project. Maybe before teleporting. (I could see an in-game business around teleporting, could anyone else?) Before extending an invite to someone in your posession strewn home.  And if we do end up with group housing, perhaps it could be evaluative there. Or before joining a player club that requires you to hand off some primo stuff as a consideration before joining.

The downside of this is that it all feels very bureaucratic (or wait, is that a plus?)... A++ Would Do Business Again, kind of 1997 but not in a cool ironic way.

Thoughts?

  • Always a danger of people using rating for personal attacks. One way to slightly avoid it would be to only allow people to give a thumbs up and not a thumbs down. Then the worst that could happen is someone/business has NO rating.

  • lord bacon-o's idea might work.

similar to flickr which uses a "fave" system instead of a "thumbs up / thumbs" down system.

still, might turn into an unmitigated disaster.

  • i suppose in the meantime we can use friend count as a better-than-nothing gauge of social connectedness and thus reputation.

  • Unmitigated disaster potential:
    Too byzantine
    Dupe accounts to bolster
    Griefing method

As far as friending, I'm kind of a cheap friend on here. I'll friend back just about anyone--and then remove if I lose interest.

  • ingrid, I am with you on the friend thing. I have been friending any request... but I know that sometime soon I am going to have to go on a mass purge.

  • Unfortunately I could friend everyone on the leader boards if I wanted to and they would be my friend regardless of their disposition towards me.

Kinda like that creepy kid who thinks you are best friends and you avoid him all the time.

  • We could start using the forums for this - each business could have a feedback post, where customers could post positive and negative experiences. It would also allow proprietors to respond to them with thanks, explanations or apologies as appropriate.
