Skill tree - Planning ahead for the brave new world

Is there a skill tree online anywhere that looks like the one we used to be able to access from our profile page? One that shows the progression of skills and what you need to learn first to unlock advanced skills? I checked the Encyclopedia and the wiki, but they just have the skills listed as bullet points -- not in the graphical format that I'm looking for.

Basically, I want a flow chart so I can figure out the best order to learn skills once the game opens up again. Anyone have a link?

Thanks.

• It takes some willpower on my part not to plan every skill/action/path/etc.

I do appreciate a good strategic approach to a given goal though. :)

• It's not that I don't like taking it easy.

It's that I definitely don't like 14-day skill timers!

I was up to 13.5d on one of my skills, and the only reason that number wasn't "three of my skills" is because I did some learning on them over the breaks.

I can't even imagine trying to be patient through those when the game is open all the time. I would just be sitting there fuming at the countdown.

• i hate the implication that because someone is organized and plans things ahead that they are somehow deficient in "smelling the roses".
Posted 15 months ago by striatic Subscriber! | Permalink
• also, just because people may want to avoid waiting two weeks or longer for a skill to finish does not mean that this is a "competition".

it's like if I organized my kitchen tools to minimize prep time, you entered the kitchen, saw that the tools were organized and said, in all seriousness, "what, are you're trying to be better than me or something?"

clearly that's not the case.

• so.... 10 free skills or 20 free skills?
Posted 15 months ago by goodstory Subscriber! | Permalink
• 20 free skills with the BL skills, 10 without
Posted 15 months ago by lovintnt Subscriber! | Permalink
• which level?

• OFF TOPIC but ON POST: Jeez. Some people are grumpy today.

• Unless things have changed (and we'll see if that's the case soon enough), it's 20 free skills. BL0 = no BL.
Posted 15 months ago by Marebito Subscriber! | Permalink
• it's 20, and compounding 3% per additional.

i've heard nothing about BL "making it 20, otherwise it is 10" though.

• The base times have not been changed, but, as discussed in some other forum thread a very long time ago, we finally switched to a system where there are "decreasing returns" — the more skills you learn, the longer it will take to learn further ones.

Right now it is set up such that, starting with your 10th skill, each additional skill you learn will cause a (compounding) 5% increase in the length of time to learn another. So, skill #20 will take 63% longer than the base time and skill #40 will take 432% longer.

The better learning skills also now have an additional benefit: starting with BL II, the increase the number of skills you can learn before that 5% increase starts ticking in.

• @lovintnt

While that was the original post by Stoot on the theoretical concept, the *actual implementation* was discovered to be different. The information I'd posted was what was determined *empirically* from data gathered (twice since they changed things again shortly after initial implementation) and the compounding increase was reverse calculated from that information.

• Yeah, not even the Dev's statements can be taken as unchangeable facts. These things aren't super important, since one only has to deal with the once, but we're pretty hardcore players compared to the kinds of people who will be playing a few months from now, and some clarification would be great.

This wouldn't really be a debate if there were delta-notes or "what's changed this week" updates, but I'm not going to fault a small company for not annotating every little change they make during a beta test. Too many changes, too often.

• Not trying to argue. I was just trying to answer goodstory's question: "so.... 10 free skills or 20 free skills?" My first, simple answer didn't seem to suffice, so I added more detail, not to point out the percentages, simply to show that that the (short) answer is 10 without BL and 20 with it. Apologies if I missed a later change.

• better learning 1, meditation, teleportation

probably not very efficient time-wise but what about getting some early value from the skill so you can use it right away to do the things you want to do?

If you want to get currents to get a house right away then mining and bl would be the way to go.

I wanna tp in and out of whatever new awesome regions are introduced next. Also, unlike veteran beta and alpha testers, I don't yet have a good mental picture of the world . I want to do more exploring.

• Another interesting question, related to this topic: If you had all the skills and you needed to unlearn some in order to take on others, which ones would you dump first?
Posted 15 months ago by Treesa Subscriber! | Permalink
• lol on the better learning debate. Will it ever get resolved or is it a timeless argumentative loop?

• The only problem I see with wanting to learn BL1 first, is that It requires the player to be L3 before you can learn it. (Same's true for Mining 1) While not impossible, it begs the question of whether it's better to learn as skill #1 or as #2 onward instead. If we couldn't speed things up with favour and could learn BL right from the beginning, it would be the most efficient route to take. But because of that L3 requirement... Yeah. It does throw things off in terms of efficiency. (I'm toying with an idea that'll have me learn it as Skill #1 but am not sure how well it will work. ^^; )

@Twoodle
LOL! Which came first? The chicken or the egg? :P In terms of straight efficiency, there will come a point (if it hasn't already been reached) where learning the full BL tree earlier will be better than choosing skills willy nilly, but that doesn't necessarily mean the learning path will be "fun". (Favour can toss a major wrench into this depending on enjoyment gained vs rate of gaining favour for use towards speeding up learning compared to rate of speeding up learning on a max efficiency BL based skill path (w or w/o using favour)).

Ultimately though, I think it's best to do whatever you want to and not worry too much about what other people think. If you want to try to maximize efficiency, go for it. If you want to toss darts at a board, that works, too. Now if only we can get a player reset button. Then we can try as many strategies as we want and really have a go at things. :D

• Well, this thread seems to have gotten out of control while I wasn't looking.

Here's my plan, in case anyone cares:
(Along the way, I'll be mining and squeezing and nibbling and harvesting everything I can. I think I'm going to put off doing the Rock's official quests until I have completed a few of my own personal goals.)

1. Get papers, so I can travel via subway and buy a cheap house, preferably at Tallish Crest Quarter.
- Reach Level 3 (should be easy since there is little XP difference among the initial levels and I'll be getting lots of "First Time Here!" bonuses)
- Better Learning I skill (2 min 15 sec)
- Get Card-Carrying Qualification from the Bureaucratic Hall in Gregarious Grange
- Bureaucratic Arts I (1 min 30 sec - or slightly less with the buff from BL I)
- Back to the Bureaucratic Hall to get papers
- Complete the papers in my inventory

2. Achieve awesomeness by learning to make Awesome Stew
(Skill times will be slightly reduced with Better Learning I)
- EZ Cookery (1 min 30 sec)
- Cheffery I (4 min 30 sec)
- Fry at least 11 meals to get the Decent Hash Slinger achievement
- Cheffery II (13 min 30 sec)
- Cheffery III (9 min -- Why is this shorter than Cheffery II? No idea.)
- Saucery I (6 min 45 sec)
- Grilling I (13 min 30 sec)
- Blending I (4 min 30 sec)
- Master Chef I (54 min)
- Buy an awesome pot (300 currants)
- Make a LOT of proper rice (grind allspice to make salt + 1 rice from a produce vendor)
- Unlock ability to make awesome stew!

3. Become a better miner
- Mining I (4 min 30 sec)
- Mining II (22 min 30 sec)
- Donate enough to Zille to unlock the first emblem; spend it.
- Mining III (2 hr 24 min)
- Queue up Mining IV (14 hr 24 min) at night while I'm sleeping or when I know I'm going to be away from the game for a long period of time.

4. Buy a house and plant some seeds (crops and trees)
- I want a house in Tallish Crest Quarter since it's close to a subway and has easy access to both sparkly and metal rocks.
- A house here should cost around 2,750 currants. TCQ houses have 2 patches for trees (beans ftw) and one dark patch, an 18-slot storage cabinet, 1 trophy case, and 8 crop slots.

From here, I think I'll work on the skills necessary to smelt and grind rocks so I can make ingots to sell and donate. Alternatively, I may focus on increasing my gardening and croppery skills. I haven't decided yet.

As for the Better Learning pathway, I'm still torn. I may do a few of them early on, or I may not. We'll see.

• Hun, those skill times aren't going to be at all accurate once you've gotten one skill learned.
I posted a link ages ago, here it is again:
http://beta.glitch.com/forum/general/7289/#reply-74835

We tested maybe 3 weeks ago to get all the skill times, these are what they should be after you learn one skill (as base times from which you can work out the BL times if you're so inclined)
Posted 15 months ago by Biohazard Subscriber! | Permalink
• I never would have found that link, Biohazard, because as you stated earlier, the forum's search function is made of fail. But BL I jumps up to 15 minutes? That's a bunch of crap.

ETA: I bumped that thread and posted a question over there. Maybe someone can help dumb it down for me.
Posted 15 months ago by Tonya Subscriber! | Permalink
• @ Tonya: But at least we have a heads up---thanks, Biohazard, for publishing your list of times. I have found it very helpful as I try and noodle out a strategy, which seems to change as often as my outfits---lol
Posted 15 months ago by GreyGoose Subscriber! | Permalink
• Tonya, that is what the skill times "are". That is their regular base time upon which all else is calculated. The lower skill times are a first-quest-only deal. I don't know why it shows that effect on every skill and not just the Tier-1 skills, but those posted were the learning times you had last time around.
Posted 15 months ago by Biohazard Subscriber! | Permalink
• Wow, I just read through this whole thread and some of it was confusing the hell out of me. But as I got to the end of it I realized I did learn some things and actually changed my own personal 'plan of attack' for the better, I hope. Anyway, ty all for the info and however you choose to do your 'plan of attack' just make sure your having fun along the way...

• I won't swear if it's true but if you start several skills at the same time and get the time cut in half by donations, then start another skill and cut time in half by donations and so on you don't get hit with the extra time per skill until you have finished completely learning that skill. This is particularly effective when you get towards the end of your skills and can save you days on the longer skills.
Posted 15 months ago by xoxJulie Subscriber! | Permalink
• I remember a warning that I'd get penalized if I switched skills while going through the accelerated learning due to donations. I don't know if the penalty was retroactive or just from then on. In general, is there a penalty from switching skills, or is that just during the accelerated learning?
Posted 15 months ago by Singularity Subscriber! | Permalink
• This is what I know about switching skills, told to me by a staff member: Once you switch skills that are at max speed, you can no longer re-speed up the skill when you go back to it.
Posted 15 months ago by Zany Serendipity Subscriber! | Permalink
• Absolutely right when you switch skills you cannot then speed it up BUT if you are already learning at top speed it does not add time to learn that skill you will still learn it a top speed.
Posted 15 months ago by xoxJulie Subscriber! | Permalink
• True, once you are at top speed (not 50% of time removed, just when the rock is reading super fast) if you switch, when you switch back to it it will be learning too fast for you to do anything.

Last test though, I found out that if it is a long enough one you can just wait out the speed-up. It took a few hours but eventually I could speed one up again. It may have to do with how much you've already taken off, I had only taken a few hours off of a 14d skill.
