What I have learned from the inventory loss

Letters and notes, among collectors, are called ephemera. They are passing things some keep, as little external memories of friends and events. In a robbery or fire, these are the things that people are often the most hurt to lose.

In the case of the recent inventory loss, these are the things that haven't been restored yet, if they even can be.

There is a lesson we can take from this, however, and I encourage everyone to copy and paste those little scraps of text you love and save them to your local machine. I would also encourage you all to back up your local machine and keep an off-site copy.

In the digital age, Ephemera doesn't have to be ephemeral.

  • Nice last line, MrVolare, and a good tip on copying and pasting the contents of notes onto another medium.

As to the storage of notes within the game, I would love to be able to slot them into a book holder that I could place on the shelves in my house.  So essentially a storage cupboard that is the size of a book and looks like one that can fit x amount of notes.

  • While you can copy and paste the text of a note, you can't copy and paste the title or the signature & date portion. For this reason, I prefer screenshots for keepsake purposes -- unless I want to be able to copy the text of the note again at some point.

Wikipedia has information on how to make a screenshot for Windows, Mac OS, and various other platforms.  In addition, there are various applications that will help you not only make screenshots, but also organize and store them.

  • I _really_ want API access to notes. Imagine integrating your notes into a cloud-based service like Simplenote or dropbox. Wow!

I understand it would take some re-jiggering of the way notes exist, and really, the payoff for most people would be absolutely minimal. But those of us who keep tabs on little scraps of .txt ephemera for a living would find a way to integrate it into our workflow. And it would be awesome.

What if I could, from my computer's file-system, make 25 "Legend of the Fish" notes with a simple Duplicate command? And have those notes show up in Ur.  It would save me a _whole_ lot of back and forth cutting and pasting in and out of the game.

Ok. That's Enough bluesky imagineering  for the day. Back to chewin' purple.
