  • I don't think Casombra has " lower[ed] the level of every conversation or comment that sails over [her] head"

In fact, she's done a great job of pushing exactly the right buttons to make the superior folk in this thread come out with guns blazing, pointed directly at that poor ignorant girl who "posts about how much clothing [she's] bought"

To quote someone who posted above:  Just IGNORE it

    Bravo, Casombra.

And before you get your panties twisted into a superior knot, why, yes, I am a member some snotty superior intellectual groups you wouldn't recognize (Whisperwing is right, so I've edited this).

  • Windborn, bwahahaha! (pats back)  Good for you tiger.  And what does intertel and 1% have to do with ANYTHING we are talking about?  I'm MENSA, so what?  You may be awesome in a lab or with numbers, but sometimes that has diddley to do with having a cogent thought in a actual conversation.  I thinks me smells a troll.

  • Probably time to put this one to bed.

Arguments that only can be made by attacking individuals are pretty weak arguments.

  • "I would like to point out that there's a big difference between running around the produce community gardens  planting 12c spinach, and running around the herb community garden planting 345c (current auction price) Rubeweed  seeds.   Planting 4 of those and then having someone come by and say "one for all and all for one!" while stealing your investment must be fairly galling, and I don't suppose the signs help that any"

"Sharing is good.  Sharing is also voluntary.  You say "here, I have something to share with you."  That is sharing.   Someone else walking up to you, taking your stuff and saying "You are sharing this with me, thanks" - that isn't sharing, that is taking. "

I agree with these two.  The idea that the community gardens can be utopian, socialist resources with no rules as to who can take what means only works when everyone is guided by the same moral compass.  Otherwise, it will always be the case that you'll have one group doing all the work, while another group reaps all the benefits. Personally, I'm sick of loosing my expensive herbs because I look away from my computer for 30 seconds. Just a thought.

  • @Casombra:

They were having a civil discussion, whether it is of your interest or not (or at least it seemed fairly civil in what I read of it).

If it is not of your interest, then just state your less in-depth opinion* on the signs if you so wish and stay out of the parts of the conversation that you see as going deeper than you think is necessary.

Everyone is free to post or not post; and as such, you can post for people to keep to simplicity on subjects such as this, but so long as they aren't badgering you to read, keep up with and offer your own deep insights on whatever subject, then it's probably not worth the time and effort to complain about their discussion, since it's more likely to just get people riled up when things were initially okay.

I find a lot more peace of mind in only commenting on discussions that truly pique my interest or that mean a lot to me (in this case, living and letting live is important to me). I tend to read most things in the forums, but if it leans toward a deeper thought process than I'm in the mood to use, I switch to scanning it and moving on to the next topic. It keeps me happy, and it keeps others happy.

*By less in-depth, I only mean that it doesn't seem to be a subject you think requires in-depth commentary. I do not think the prods at your intelligence level were necessary.

    @Everyone:

And now that I've previewed my post, I can see some things in this thread are going downhill. Really, personal attacks and snide commentary aren't needed, just because people have a different viewpoint. This is what happens when people get riled up. :(

  • I hear you Aurora, that would be frustrating. As you said, it is not like cheap veggie seeds you can easily buy at the garden vendor. Or cheap veggies you can buy at the produce vendor. The seeds, guano, and herbs are expensive items.

To be honest, I am happy I have stayed far away from the gardens and have put my quests to make tinctures and potions on hold. This entire situation has gotten insane!

  • I have to agree with Pomegrandy and Little Miss Giggles. There are many ways to enjoy Glitch and to enjoy talking about it. Trying to impose limits on that is tyrannical. Global Chat and General Forum are both totally free forums. If it's very important to a player that they only be exposed to a certain type of conversation, idea, comment, and they're unable to use their own mental filter, they might be very happy creating their own sub-community (a group) that they can actually legitimately control instead of throwing temper tantrums when the world at large does not conform to their personal desires.

I love the comparison of the anti-intellectual grinches to Miss Umbrage. All fluffy puffy and pink on the outside, seething rage and infantile egomania on the inside. Interesting.

  • Little Miss Giggles, I do apologize on getting a bit upset and yes I did snipe back after being attacked by intelligence level. I am not an uneducated person at all. Along with a fantastic education, a very meaningful career (I am retired now), I have also had many enriching life experiences.

I just get annoyed that topic after topic have lately been changed to something more than what it was. What was a simple statement or idea has been turned into a deep political and/or philosophical discussion. Basically the threads have been "somewhat" derailed due to those discussions. However, Que sera sera.

I can cheerfully and enthusiastically defend the openness of a free forum, but your comments have become just plain spiteful, and do nothing for defending the cause of free speech.
Posted 12 months ago by Aviatrix Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Mr. Miskatonic I think it is time to back off Windborn now ok? What she reveals about herself personally really is not your concern, and attacking her for it and calling her pathetic is just plain outright beyond rude. How she spends her free time is of no concern to you.

  • My goodness! Have we finally settled the question of who's penis/boobs are the biggest? And in all reality, do we really care? (This is directed at no person in particular, just the general tone that has emerged in this thread).

As far as I can see, the likely reason those signs were introduced were to refute demands from players that the plots be turned into rental plots where a single player could stake claim to them for some period of time. One person owning plots does not equal community owned. If you can't figure out how to share effectively, I suggest you buy a bog house (or share one with a trusted friend).

  • Casombra, I really couldn't give two batterfly guanos about your opinion.  This is/was an open forum to discuss things.  Maybe the two of you would rather keep it base and vapid, not me.  She was the one boasting about crap that was absolutely meaningless to the context of the argument.  Phuque being PC.  If you claim to be wearing big girl pants, prove it.  What does her job and IQ have to do with the topic?  Was either fact relevant?  No,  it was a lame attempt to puff herself up.  Who cares?!  You know what, you may just win.  The two of you are the kind of drama I want to avoid on a daily basis.  I may just delete my glitch and be done with it.

  • Discussion of the game at all levels is something we encourage in the forums, yes. Criticism, deep commentary, even light-hearted remarks and opinions, all of these things are welcome.

The three things we do ask of you in order to keep the forums a place where this kind of interesting (and topical!) issue can be discussed is: a) don't troll other players in your comments, b) do not make personal attacks against others because of the opinions they are expressing,  and c) keep the thread relevant to the original subject.

The Community Gardens are certainly a place that can be made or broken by the interactions that happen there, but everything on a public street is, in the end, fair game. They don't work perfectly, but there are bigger solutions being worked on that are worth the extra time and effort. For now, you are responsible for helping shape the character of interactions there, by letting things roll off your shoulders when they don't go exactly as planned, by not purposefully being a jerk when someone is trying to harvest crops or herbs, and by countering negative interactions with positive ones. Regardless of your beliefs about how community gardens should work, abusive language, harassment and other ways of acting which are inconsistent with the principles of the Community Guidelines should be taken out of your playbook: players who persistently exhibit these behaviors will be warned, then suspended, then banned from Glitch.

  • WindBorn, I know from observation that you like seeing people as being in competing teams, but that's really not the case. I don't know Miskatonic, and whatever overlapping values we share do not imply that I support the level of hostility he just displayed against you. I'm not particularly keen on your social strategies either. My primary interest was simply to state solidarity with those who are for tolerance and freedom.

  • I actually like to read these types of arguments as long as everyone can be civil about it, but these arguments fall apart and the fun ends when you start attacking someone.

  • Aviatrix,

Perhaps your goals of tolerance and freedom would be better served if you did not create false dichotomies like  "anti-intellectuals" to characterize those who prefer a different style of conversation in some forum threads.

  • WindBorn, I'm not telling anyone they're not allowed to converse freely on topics in such a manner that suits them. Being a proponent of free speech doesn't mean that I have to think all free speakers are cool. I do in fact think that Dolores Umbridge was fluffy puffy pink on the outside and full of seething rage and infantile egomania on the inside. And that those who seek to dominate others while pretending to be fuzzle wuzzle at the same time are kindred spirits of the lady. Now... Because I've seen you in action and I know this kind of thing charges you up and you get off on it, I'm going to go ahead and ignore you. FOREVER. I know that probably makes you really sad. ;-)  But by demonstrating this superhuman ability to ignore annoying people, I hope to demonstrate to all who struggle with the concept that it IS possible.

  • The Harvest-Then-Replant model (which is what these new signs seem to be endorsing) is best left in the pre-Potions Glitch, I think.  People pretty much only ever replant Purple, so if you want anything else you have to 1. bring extra guano, and 2. wait an extra however-long-it-takes-to-grow.  And then after you plant something good, you have to wait around for it to flower, because there will be people waiting to swoop in and harvest it the very second it does. Once your good herbs are harvested (either by you or some other jerk),  you shuck the Purple you harvested earlier, hope some seeds actually come out, and replant them for the next poor sap.  That last bit seems much more cruel than helpful, to be honest; I know Glitch is a game of standing around and waiting, but there are limits to how much of my life I'm willing to waste on it.

No, what we need now is a Plant-Then-Harvest model.  You plant what you want, then you harvest it, then you leave an empty plot so the next Glitch can do the same.  Get in, get out. No fuss, no muss.  Much more convenient for everyone.

Why do things have to be "ism"-ized or politicized anyway in the game? Be nice, help if you wish and mind your business, no pestering or bullying... That seems to be the spirit of the game. I roleplay as a grouchy asocial closet philanthroglitch.

I agree with this sentiment completely.

While I understand that TS wants to take a hands-off approach on this, I think a better way of doing it would be to either provide some kind of encouragement to replant valuable seeds, or rejigger the way that seed-shucking works so that you get a few more seeds per herb -- the artificial scarcity is what is causing part of the problem.

If I shuck 5 herbs individually and wind up with 6 or 7 seeds, I don't feel like I'm getting much payoff for my effort, and I'm less likely to give away/replant/etc. (note: I have never used the community gardens) . . . I happily give away drinks, bowls of Awesome Stew, all kinds of goodies . . . but because herbs have such a low output, I really can't afford to give them away or be as generous with them.

I also think that if you have Herbalism II, you shouldn't run into the instances of herbs being destroyed and giving NO seeds when shucking -- if you're at the highest-level-available skill in the skill tree, why does this still happen?  I was given a flower by a friend the other day in order to have some seeds to plant, and shucking it destroyed it and gave no seeds.  It was a real disappointment :/
I love Glitch, and I really love the spirit of community that I've encountered here, but I think that the way that herbs are weighted in the game is contributing to a lot of the dissatisfaction and acrimony that I'm seeing right now :(

  • True "community gardens" don't work like this.  The concept is that city people don't have their own growing space, so they can snag a few plots to grow some food.  Donald Trump doesn't come down and seed it for ya'll to harvest.  The harvest is for the planter.  Just try harvesting somebody else's "community" plots IRL.
Posted 12 months ago by Mablem Tiipot Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Dr. Hackenbush.

as a member of a RL community garden, I must inform you that you are mistaken. first of all, pretty much everyone in our garden donates a sizable portion of their annual yield to the food bank, which doesn't otherwise get a lot of fresh produce. the city's community gardens donate over 25 thousand pounds of produce in this way each year.

we also have entire sections of the garden devoted solely to producing food bank produce.

people also trade a lot of food with their fellow gardeners.

some community gardens out there, like ours, have individual plots and people don't like it when random passersby nick stuff right out of the plot, but there are other community gardens out there where there are no indivual plots and the garden is tended communally and the attitude toward having people come inside the garden and harvest things is rather different.

some community gardens are not even officially owned by anyone, or really managed at all. if you read up on Geurilla Gardening, you can find examples of this.

"city people get their own little plot to grow things in" is only ONE model for community gardening, and it is not accurate to say that all 'real' community gardens adhere to that model, or that those that do adhere to that model don't give away a ton of food to pretty much anyone who wants it.

  • I agree that sharing is voluntary.  So if you do not want to share, do not plant in the community gardens.

I think what TS is trying, nicely, to tell all of you is that there is NO ISSUE here.  We do not have the right to call dibs on community plots; therefore, your decision to plant certain herbs and use guano twice to minimize the growing time while waiting beside them conveys risks no different than planting and walking away.

More importantly, there isn't a single potion that is a game changing "must have" for every player.  Essence of Rubeweed is nice, but I sometimes see the Rube more than twice per game day without it.  So no one "needs" herb plots, and if you find it's rather important to you, move to a bog home.  Or just show some patience and wait for the new housing content.

I hope I'm not alone when I say that I would hate for Tiny Speck to waste a single minute of development time coming up with ways to privatize public herb plots when they could be working towards the housing changes that will likely make all the continuous herbal whining moot and a distant memory.

And since that content will come with new skills too, most of the community will likely forget all about the current flavor-of-the-month herbs, essences and potions, and be complaining about some other item whose price has been driven up by increased demand.  Crystals and blocks I'd bet.
