House Improvement Ideas

Let this be the sole thread for any and all ideas related to the construction and improvement of houses, or POLs as they are sometimes known.

I got the idea to start a thread for them when I saw this post in the General forum: http://www.glitch.com/forum/general/9413/.

It details all the reasons an Alakol home is not quite to the OP's taste, and I agreed with a lot of their points.

Now that the post exists I'll add my two currants worth and perhaps edit this post as other ideas come to mind. :)

First, I think the idea of house customization is already too advanced. Before we glitchen are capable of customizing housing we should first have to learn how to BUILD our housing. Instead of neat little blocks full of prefab houses we could just sell varying sized plots of land. The land could be much more expensive and expansive than what we have now. Perhaps the cheapest would be ludicrously tiny and have only enough space for a room even smaller than an apartment while the largest would have tracks of land maybe even a bit bigger than today's mansions.

And what would out glitches do with these empty lands you ask? Why, build of course! We could choose from all the styles of rooms available for the area we chose to buy our plot (IE Alakol can only have modern style housing) and build the first level of housing. This could be tied into level one of a skill set called Construction, as many have already put forth. The first level would simply allow the construction of one small room in your house's style ala the smallest meadow cottage.

The next level would give the ability to make furniture and basic decorations, like cabinets and trophy cases. Level three would offer the ability to construct a second room and offer more decor ect.

Even higher levels would provide the ability to make many of the wonderful ideas that have been discussed over time like basements for egg trees and herbs, as well as pens for animals. 

Different skills would also contribute, like say having SA3 would allow you to make patches and SA5 would let you make plots (maximum amount based on the size of the plot of land you bought) while Mining or Alchemy might let you put in rocks of your own to mine.

  • I like the idea a lot, a new skill tree specializing in building the environment in this way, and new 'areas' where we buy the land are great ideas, as well as building from the ground up.

    Being a bit modular once you go in and perhaps being able to change up colors and wallpaper and such while keeping the general design the same would be great.

    Being able to choose what goes in your house (where your cabinet goes, maybe first floor, maybe third), and how much of it you want would also be nice. If this was a resourcesink I'd love it even more honestly, perhaps using up a lot of blocks, wood, and it might require another resource of sorts. If houses larger than 50k were only done this way, and you could sell them after constructing (with a price based on what is inside), a real estate market of sorts popping up would be fun.

    The idea of mining rocks/alchemy is also fun, but perhaps only in certain areas? I would love to see houses in Pollokoo for instance that have rocks inside (no herbs or crops to compensate perhaps).

  • I think it would be awesome (if it were possible) to be able to upload little jpg files or whatnot to empty picture frames we can hang on our walls.  Then we can have photos of our real life selves in our glitch's home, or a favorite artists' works hanging there (as long as the photos are not copywrited etc.), or a glyph or a giant's symbol etc.  

    Maybe we could choose one of several walls that we want and some would have these empty frames on them.  

    Or, if that's not possible, maybe some different pieces of art to choose from with different costs associated with each one.

  • I decided to just do a new post for new ideas, partly to bump the thread and partly because it won't let me save changes. >.<

    Anyway, I love your ideas Reba and Bluigi. :) I wouldn't mind putting up stupid little pictures (I have lots of dumb GIFs and whatnot) in frames in my house.

    The thing I just thought of, not entirely related but close, would be a crossover between Herdkeeping and Engineering. You'd use those skills to construct a cheese maker which would be a machine erected on a stand just like blockmakers and fuelmakers. 

    These could all go in a special place in your house accessible through a door you build out of an excessive number of resources, which would be like a personal machine room. Perhaps you'd still get the community bonus because of all the hard work you put into building it.

    That ties into another idea I had for functional rooms. There are already kitchens in some houses, but they don't do anything. It'd be nice if you could use a bunch of food to create a kitchen that offered permanent passive buffs like less energy expended while cooking or double speed. Perhaps one would be available at first and you'd need to upgrade the kitchen to get the other buff.

  • I would love it if I could just expand the house I have now just a teeeeny bit: I have one of the small caves with a dark patch, and I really don't want to lose my eggplant, but I would also really like maybe just ONE more patch upstairs and a few more garden plots. I have been unable to locate any other house-type that includes a dark patch: although one of the wikis says a particular model of tree-house *may* have a dark patch, in practice I have been unable to find one that actually does.
