mining and wind downs

i'm a big fan of the new mining dynamic.

with each gem you find, the chance of you finding another gem decreases.

this resets each game-day [4 hours]

i think this is terrific, and works well to punish people for wasting 45 minutes or more continuously mining, and encourages you to leave the mines to do something else.

basically, it is a brake on grinding to discourage grinding and compulsive gem hunting. i love it.

the glitch skill system is great, because if you leave the game for whatever reason, you always know you're still making progress.  it is the game's way of saying "leaving? that's ok. i'll be here when you come back". mining feels similar to me now. when i leave the game i don't feel as if i'm missing out or leaving currants on the table, coz if i kept mining it'd be diminishing returns anyway. i know that the game day will reset, so i am encouraged to leave and come back later to find myself back at full energy.

  • Yes I like it too, it only makes sense since gems can be valuable. Doubt it will keep me from mining though, sparkly still vendors for a good chunk of cash if you spend an hour or two mining

  • Well, in my opinion, I like the new change and I will mining for hours and hours. Gems flood inventory pretty quick, that's what I don't like. I know gems are great for donation and currant source to earn.

  • I will love to see people mine to make something with this materials and not only do it for donations and currants. Mining, Alchemy and Tinkering need to be more important.

Maybe if advanced tools are not sold from vendors and only can be tinkered then will be better.

  • yeah, we need more and better powders.

my wife went to a lot of effort last night to make startling fecundity powder and fire it off against her pen full of 25 pigs.

she was very disappointed and described it as a waste of time.

i know that fecundity powder was abused before, but right now it is arguably the most under powered item in the game. its effects really are that minimal AND there is a long cool down after use.

  • anyway, on a higher level i like that the change in mining seems to indicate an awareness of 'play session' dynamics on the part of the developers.

it is very important that play sessions don't consist of gluttonous grinding that goes on a little too long and ends awkwardly with a feeling of directionless boredom.

the skill system and the new mining dynamic set sessions to end with a natural sense of conclusion, but with the promise of more, later.

this principle can be applied to other areas of the game.

  • Oddly (I guess)  I never really mine to get gems but I am happy to get them so I learned Mining IV in hopes of finding a diamond.  I mine to get elements so I can make alchemical items or to get ores that I can make into ingots (worth more) to sell for currants or to throw into a shrine.  I also throw most of the gems into shrines.  I have plenty of currants now but for a very long time I was very poor.  In those days I seldom found a gem and often didn't notice when I did.  I won my first diamond from Essie Kitten in a contest that she held.  I had been playing for quite a while at that point.  I don't think I found a diamond myself until I had completed Mining III.

Some of the new restrictions on things like mining, gardening, etc. worry me because I had such a very hard time getting currants for several weeks.  I know we will have a Reset and will need to start over.  I remember how miserable I was until I finally had a Home.  So, restraints on skills do not bother me now but I am worried I will have a very tough time after the reset.

  • I think people may end up mining at the end and start of days to get 2 consecutive best chances at gems then skip 1 day for quests, gardening and exploring.  Good chance for us to clear all of the sparkle dust out of our lungs and see some sunshine.

  • I think I may stick with my "mine all my energy away until I am content with the amound of money I'm making for that day" routine. So... the only difference it's making for me is that I'll probably stay in the mines longer. xD But I still like to spend plenty of time at street projects. :3

    ETA: Also, +10 Brib.

  • Guess I need to try mining!

I'm a gardener/cook now but I'll have to try mining before this beta ends.

  • @shipwreck .. i'm not sure that a 'feature' like this is worth trying mining over, but switching up your gameplay is typically a good thing to keep things fresh.

  • True.

In any case, I mean to try as much as I can before beta ends so I can have a clear idea of what will be most enjoyable for me come launch.

Totally agree with this statement...hopefully at some point the mining skill tree will be better thought out/pushed out to do more thing with the ore that is mined (especially if we get building skills 'someday').

I think the reduction in the gems is silly, just like the reduction to the gardening was silly.  Now you can't tell the difference between having mining I skill and mining IV for the 'rewards' provide - sort of a waste of the skill except for the shorter time it takes to mine each time and the lower energy consumption (12en to 7en).  I think it's just going to make a mad run on the sparkly rocks at reset and everyone will be more miserable...it's just going to cause folks that want to make a certain amount of currants from mining to have to mine longer since they don't get the gem boost...and yes, mining is already mind numbingly boring...thanks for causing the grind to be worse now...I'm not a fan of gardening or many of the other skills currently available...so this change isn't going to 'get me out of the mines'.
