In support of keeping Home Streets public

Recently there has been a very vocal few in the forums up in arms about how they would like their Home Streets all to themselves. Since happy people tend to be much less loud than unhappy people I wanted to start a thread to show TS that most of us are very happy with sharing our Home Streets as a public resource.

In the old system we had to pay for a house with currants. Then those houses came with a very limited number of preset resources. The most you could hope for was 5 trees, 24 of one kind of crop plot... maybe a jellisac or firefly swarm. It was extremely limited.

Now the possibilities are practically endless. Our backyards are a completely private haven for almost any resource we can dream of. Then as a bonus we can choose a whole additional set of resources to sit right outside our front door! We just have to share them.

Now I believe the fact that there are huge resources networks attests to the fact that a majority of players like and want to keep sharing their Home Streets. Glitch is all about cooperation and sharing and I think most glitchen get that.

I know that in the past very vocal unhappy people have caused game changes. There have already been a few tweaks to Home Streets (although I believe these are positive tweaks). I am a bit afraid that the few angry glitchen screaming at us kids to stay off their lawn might actually cause more changes that would hurt the beautiful resource routes.

If you agree that Home Streets should stay public I'm starting this thread as a place for you to speak up so the wonderful staff at TS sees that most of us like sharing the things that were only kind of ours to begin with.

(p.s. this thread is not referring to people who have misunderstood and lost things. I do think there should be clearer warnings about what is safe on your Home Street and what is not)

  • I also really like that the Home Streets are public. I enjoy nothing more than leaving my house to find folks milling about, harvesting vapor from my gas trees or mining sparkly. I've gotten to know and meet some new Glitchens and it makes the time I've spent at my home less lonely. I also like to leave goodies out in the yard for the taking. I don't have anything of value in my home street that I'm unwilling to share - why should I? I have a big backyard for that.

    Thanks, as always TS!

  • +1 - I like and enjoy using the open front yard system - it's a whole new area to explore.  Especially if you're not feeling particularly social for whatever reason.  You can glitch and harvest without having to make small talk (those who know me know I can talk my socks off...those who know me also know not to IM me when I'm roaming the home streets) It is my 'chill' time when I'm knackered :O)

  • I am in favor of keeping home streets public. I think, based on Stoot's mention of vending SDBs in the future, that Tiny Speck's plan is to keep them public. Though I haven't joined a resource route yet, I think they are a great idea and in the spirit of Glitch. I think some of the changes to lock some items and trees down have been good, but I hope everything else remains public.

  • What's the point of putting resources on your street if not to share with others? I welcome people to my street. It would take me a very long time to run down some of my resources all by myself. I also have a full set of icons on my street for sharing.

This is a community game let's be a community. I've met a lot of really nice people by randomly jumping streets.

  • I would love to chime in and say that I agree I think the home streets should be public. It's nice to wander about and see what other's have done to decorate their house or yard. I think that as long as people understand (and most do now) that certain items (like feeders, collector's & Icon's) are locked, but most are out there to share people can decide to place what they are willing for other's to use.

  • I think if there was just an ability for those that want theirs to be private, could do so, and those that want it public could do so would settle the masses on both sides. ;)

  • I support keeping my hpousing street public. If you need eggs or icon reflecting, piggy nibbling, chicken squeezing, machine using, or all of the above, come stop by my street!

  • I for one absolutely adore shareable home streets!

  • If they do have the ability for private streets, what "defines" private? No one being able to put their signpost to your street? Only friends? Keyholders? Or No one can visit AT ALL without your permission?

  • Personally I LOVE the resource routes and am on one of them myself (with extra resources out in the yard just for the heck of it). I'd hate to see something change in a way that our resource routes would have to die.

That being said I don't see it being a problem if there was a way that a person could decide to make their home street private vs public. However, if it was "all or none" then I'd fully put support behind keeping streets public. I don't know how many people are complaining but based on the number of people signed up to a resource route (and more adding every day), I'd say the number of people that like streets public is pretty high.
Posted 7 months ago by Viresse Subscriber! | Permalink
  • If you or anyone else wants your home street to be open to the public, that's great for YOU. Some players do NOT want that. It should be an option. I've already suggested that if people want their home streets to be private that they should be prevented from visiting other people's home streets, as a perfectly reasonable drawback to having privacy.

Just because you enjoy things one way doesn't mean everyone does. People are far happier when they have OPTIONS to pick from, as opposed to being forced to do something they clearly don't want to do.

If you think having strangers around where you live is such a great idea, please post your home address so we can come visit any time day or night and creep you out. Oh, that's not something that appeals to you? Well strange Glitches on my home street creep me out.

  • I would be so sad if home streets turned private or friends only. I love interacting with people who come through my street — and I'm two resource routes, so I get a lot! I don't understand the people who complain so much about public home streets — if you don't want things to get taken or resources to be used, then DON'T PUT THEM ON YOUR HOME STREET.

I'm really enjoying the home streets as they are. I just joined a resource route and it's awesome, and I get to meet so many interesting people! Being able to share my hard-earned resources makes Glitch so much more rewarding for me.

I am, however, grateful that no-one can steal my feeders or poison my trees.

  • Also people seem to be ignoring the resource depletion and denial aspects of public home streets. I signed on this morning to see two destroyed large herb plots and 5 ore stumps. That's just mean spirited. I paid imagination to make those, and anyone can just use them and deplete them on me, forcing me to rebuild them? BULLSHIT. Why would I place anything out on my home street just for people to raid and plunder? That doesn't make any sense at all to me.

Resource routes are an interesting emergent property of the public home street system. People get to completely bypass having to go out into Ur and gather resources the old way. I don't think that's a good idea. It means people are spending all their time on home streets and not going out into the world like they used to do.

  • Lol Kelti, until I run around milking butterflies and feeding metal to sloths in real life I'll keep my home address to myself. Glitch is almost nothing like real life and I love keeping it that way.

Didn't you have a home in the old system? I'm sure people went by your house then too. How is this different?

Posted 7 months ago by Pascale Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Kelti - This thread was created to be a place where people who wanted the home streets kept public could post, there are many other threads with a different opinion. I am not saying this to pick on you, just wanted to point out why most other poster's in this thread don't agree w/your point of view. I for one do visit streets in the resource routes, but when I see a depleted resource I always try to contribute to rebuilding it. The other night ano player and I totally rebuilt someone's barnacle resource and I felt glad to be able to help out. The ore stumps are another issue, I think that some players don't realize that if they don't fully mine ore it won't respawn, I think they are trying to be polite and share a resource.

  • Actually Kelti, people do drive (some walk) up and down my real life home street at all hours of the day and night. That's because public streets are well... public. Are some of them creepy? Hell yes they are, but it's a public street... I don't think comparing real public streets is really the same as a glitch home street, because lets face it, if you put anything on your lawn at all, it's probably going to be stolen, nothing can be "locked down" the way things have been here.
Posted 7 months ago by Viresse Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Kelti

I suspect it's because you were complaining. In fact *pillage*

I have no problems with how the home streets are currently set up, but see no issue with there being individual privacy settings (other than people not looking into them and complaining when their DARN gets stolen)

  • Absolutely.  Keep home streets public.

  • I had a nice 50K house in the old system and I quite miss it. I have no idea if people went by my old home. I have one friend that I trust with a key and that's it. This is different because I wasn't spending XP/imagination to build resources on my home street in the old system.

Why are people being so difficult and having such a hard time understanding that some players DO NOT WANT strangers on their home streets? If you want to share YOUR home street with the world, that's fine. Good for you. If there was a system in place where you could make your home street open to the public, open to friends only or completely private, you could choose public and that'd be it.

Obviously people have led sheltered lives - no robberies or home invasions, no stalkers or sketchy people creeping around outside their homes. I guess you need to have shitty things happen to you in order to understand how badly this sort of thing can make a person feel even in a game.

  • If you put things out there, do expect that you will have to care for it. If you have a lawn, you have to mow it right? If you have a dog or cat or other pet, you have to feed it and take care of it right? If you grow an apple tree in your front yard, there will be people picking apples from it right?

  • I have loved the idea of a public street that I get to "design" since I first heard it. I also love to share what I have with other people. In practice, the streets have been even better than I anticipated and they add a tremendous amount to my positive game experiences. Randomly meeting Glitchen visiting my street (or me visiting theirs) has been the start of many of my favorite glitchy friendships.

I also feel for the level-headed Glitchen who want streets to be different. The entitled rage-posters are casting their own argument in an ugly light. I hope this conflict is resolved somehow, to most peoples' satisfaction, and I do like things just the way they are.

ETA: I don't expect to get everything the way I want it in the game - and I don't. But this is the game I choose to play, so I play and have a really good time. The whole social aspect was kind of off-putting to me at first and learning to roll with it (my way or not) has only been good. The home streets were the magic that really made the the community for me.

  • I personally enjoy the public streets too. I'm on two resource routes, and some really interesting people come around. I tend to be a little shy so it's a good way for me to feel like a part of the community. I like being able to share my resources with others.

Just today I saw that my peat bog was depleted and I thought I'd have to supply the materials to replace it, only to see that someone else had already done it. All I needed to do was add some energy to fix it. I was pleasantly surprised.

Posted 7 months ago by AwesomeCardinal2000 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • You have a potentially enormous back yard to stock with anything your imagination can dream up. Enjoy the privacy of it! Yay!

Streets are public places. No harm can come to you, but (with a few exceptions) things you contribute to this public place are public.

Ownership means different things in different contexts. The diversity and difference enrich gameplay.

  • The current settings for our home streets are just perfect:
We have the benefit of having all our essential/important stuff (RHK items, icons, machines and trees) lockdown to owners and/or keyholders, while at the same time enjoying the freedom to visit others' streets, joining a resources route, whatever. This is the *best* middle ground TS have worked hard to provide for us. I am massively grateful for their effort.  :DD

  • @Kelti - Go play a single player game, then.
Posted 7 months ago by Fleep Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I like the homestreets public.  I feel like adding more options will needlessly complicate things for newbies.  They might think it is necessary to lock down the street for people to not enter the home, or poison trees.  It will be harder to build an intentional community because of this.  I like being able to go "knock" on people's doors.  If you don't want people to take your resources, build out your backyard instead.  I found it awesomely easy to visit people's homestreets from chat when they wanted someone to mourn them or help build/destroy a resource.

  • It's hilarious to see how people are twisting this so completely. Home street privacy doesn't in any way mean that a person wants to play a single player game. It's ridiculous to think that, but whatever. As for back yards being "enormous", there's about enough room for 4 large plots. That's hardly enormous.

  • Strangers wander around my street in RL regularly and I am very comfortable with that. Now if they were coming into my house without my knowledge or consent that would creep me out big time. They don't in RL . And they can't in Glitch. Any resources on my home street are there as a contribution to the commonweal of our community. Stuff I don't want to share is in my house and backyard. I am on a resource route do I did set it up to expect traffic. And so far Glitchen have helped replenish depleted resources on my street, so I am thinking it is working. But actually I don't know that I would be all that upset if the replenishment was sort of hit or miss. After all I get access to resources on the other streets so it balances out.

  • It's bigger than Footlands Heath. It's a yard that's as big as your house itself.
    You've got a house. I think that's private enough.
If you hate how people always eat up your stuff, why put stuff there in the first place? You can't expect them to repair it can you?
Posted 7 months ago by AwesomeCardinal2000 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Kelti, I'm sorry that bad things have happened to you. I know that life experiences can make certain things much more sensitive than to someone who hadn't had that experience.

That said, if you'd rather not see people in your yard I would recommend you treat your front yard like the old system. Simply do not put things out there. You may still get the occasional glitch stumbling through but they won't stay as there would be nothing to stay for.

Wanting to have all the resources to yourself though is frankly selfish. You have a whole backyard, use that. And if you need more go into Ur and gather whatever else you need. Although I'm afraid you'll run into glitchen out there too...
Posted 7 months ago by SkyWaitress Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Can't we all just agree to disagree?

Kelti - I don't really understand your viewpoint. However, I will agree that maybe having the option to choose a private home street could possibly be a good thing since it is clear that you, and other Glitches I've seen around the forum, feel so strongly about it. It's not the way I would choose to play, but whatever floats your boat.

  • My really big question for Kelti is: This thread is specifically to show how many people are in support of public home streets.  You're against it. That's great for you, but we KNOW that.  You've already made your position perfectly clear in other threads.  Why did you come join this thread?  Was it to make trouble or just to argue with people for the joy of it? Cause it kind of seems like you just want to fight.

  • +1 to Sally Slingshot's comment. I'm fairly shy IRL and in Glitch. I feel like the resource routes have given me a stronger sense of community and belonging.  I helped someone restore someone else's Jellisac Mounds today, and it was incredibly rewarding. This is the kind of cooperative "everyone benefits" gameplay I've always hoped for.

I know there can be misunderstandings and the occasional bad egg, but I hope that public home streets will be the default.

  • I don't mind running into Glitches out in the world. That's part of the game. I don't mind helping other Glitches mine, gather resources, whatever. That's part of the game. People seem to be confusing wanting home street privacy with some sort of insular, hermit-like mentality. This is completely wrong.

  • Someone dropped in on me the other night..My very first visitor to my home street after the houses were reset...I have to say..I was soooooooooo excited to see another glitch in my home street..It can get very lonely mulling around this game by oneself..I only have two close friends on here...my sister and my long time game friend whom I met in FS...and when this lovely wee visitor dropped by unexpectedly just to see how I was doing..It made me feel very happy.

I wouldn't and don't leave anything of value out in my home street and where I don't like or agree with people who destroy for destroying sake..I am happy to share what I do leave out. :)

  • Kelti you are being very clear about your preferences. I am having no trouble understanding you. I get it. You prefer gated communities. What this thread is doing is making it clearly understood that many of us who play the game love the community aspects of it. We want to interact with other players in game on our streets. We want to publicly express that preference. For us it is a cherished aspect of our experience in Glitch. From some of stoot's comments on a related thread, I get the feeling that the communal aspect of the game and home streets being accessible to he public won't change (though with luck we will all better understand how it works). Someone mentioned your garden plots are depleted. Want some help replenishing? Happy to help. It's a sorta neighborly thing to do. And please note the above was written completely from the heart--no irony or snark intended. It's an honest offer.

  • To be clear, I can and DO understand how and why some people might want a private street. Much like you said Kelti, you'd choose a gated community. That's totally reasonable for you to desire such things. But like Kitty mentioned this thread wasn't for a debate it was to show that there are people on the other side of the quoin that like things the way they are. Which is fair, if there can be many complaining threads about wanting privacy why can't there be a thread of people stating that they enjoy the public streets?
Posted 7 months ago by Viresse Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Kelti you're taking over this thread which was 'from the op's subject' for those in favour of public streets.  I'm sure most of us reading are aware of your dislike for them being public in a previous thread.

Still +1 here for public streets - added enjoyment and makes the game more rounded! I actually was considering the public streets last night and with the hint that we'll be given more space/things to do on them I imagined that the home streets would be the new Ur.  Eventually overtaking the current regions.  Would be an interesting concept.  I got quite excited by the idea actually.

  • I'm on one of the resource routes and I love the idea of networks of public home streets!  I've had people leave me a few herbs from the community garden, I giggled at the bottle of hooch left on my front step one evening, and when I had too many RK I put them in my yard and someone is enjoying them now.  TS fixed the only thing I found troublesome by locking down remote herdkeeping items.  I keep resources I want to myself in my backyard and I feel like I have great flexibility with both a public street and a private backyard.

It's a little unclear to me as to why people who are uncomfortable with other players are in an MMO to begin with.  If a particular player bothers you, you can block them and they are not permitted on your home street.
Posted 7 months ago by Lucille Ball Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I don't think the issue is as monolithic as a binary public/private choice.

I think the issue is that many different kinds of people want to share their streets in different ways, and then have the option to change their mind, and share their streets differently in the future.

I'm doing the public street thing right now to see how resource routes work out.  So far, so good. Although what I find interesting is that more people are interested in USING the resource routes than participating by HAVING a reciprocal resource route.

There was a time in the not too distance past where I would have personally been fine with having my street keyed.

But now that my RHK drops are locked, I'm good with having my street open.  Tomorrow, I might feel differently.

TL;DR: The feature request here is for having multiple sharing options for streets. And homes. So as to avoid the tragedy of the commons.
