The Future of Glash? (Glitch and Flash)

I was wondering if Glitch would switch to HTML5 from flash, since Windows 8 won't support flash (even though I might not upgrade...). Will Wallaby be used to convert the flash to HTML? Is Glitch being reconstructed via Adobe Edge? Is there a need?

I don't mean to cause havoc or panic, I just want to ask about an issue that might potentially rise in the near future.

  • The OS doesn't support flash, it's the browser. Glitch will be playable on Windows 8.

  • Good to know, I thought it was the other way around...

  • Good to know. My dad was planning on upgrading to Windows 8 and this topic got me a little scared.
Kinda off topic, but Rook, I love your name.

  • Yeah, but it still sucks that I can't play Glitch on the iPad... Yah, I know, should have bought an android tablet, but... So I'm limited to doing all my "recon" on the pad and waiting till I get home to do some actual game time.

  • Only the "Metro-style" IE in Windows 8 doesn't support Flash; the standard IE (and presumably other browsers such as Firefox/Chrome) will still be able to run the Flash plugin.

  • I'm still hoping for native apps. Flash is a memory and CPU hog. A native app (interfacing with DirectX) would be much nicer.

As I understand it, Glitch was built with multiple platforms in mind, so a native Windows client shouldn't be out of the question. (And a Mac client for those so inclined.)

Edge is probably a horrible choice for a game implementation since it lacks canvas support.

  • Even Adobe has come to realize the days of Flash are numbered. Why there isn't an iPhone/iPad native Glitch app is a mystery. It doesn't seem to be a particularly brilliant business decision to not have one. After all, history has reported in and the numbers show iOS users spend more money than Android users (the dirty little secret of the Android universe is the only company making money on Android right now is Google).

So what will happen to Glitch when (not IF) all the major browsers drop Flash support? They will either have to go to the expense of a HTML 5 total re-write, or ditch the web interface and just run with native apps. I don't think Tiny Speck has the resources to be able to do both at the same time. What I see coming is a lot of unhappy Glitch customers in Tiny Speck's future if a decision on this wasn't made six months to a year ago.

Then again, I am shocked anyone would undertake a Flash development like Glitch after Steve Jobs published his Thoughts on Flash in April 2010. Only a fool would bet against Steve Jobs and no less a company than Adobe tried exactly this and failed. But... here we are. Now let's see what happens.

  • This has been discussed recently with staff input.

  • Why would anybody dare do anything that doesn't coincide with Steve Jobs 'thoughts.'

    Hmm..

I don't know that Adobe has tried and failed against Apple.  The Mac is now a secondary platform for the Adobe Suite.

HTML5 is at this point a mirage.  I am happy that Glitch is based in Flash.

Now, I do wish that Adobe would expand their client line out into the Linux sphere, just to keep things interesting.

I can't imagine playing Glitch on a touch-screen only interface.  I just got an Android tablet.  It has an SD slot AND I can plug any old USB keyboard into it.  It's not an iPad, but then again, it's not an iPad....

  • @MaryLiLamb, thanks for the thread link, satisfied my inner anti-actionscripter for a bit.

@Parrow re Adobe and Linux, oh, if only. Then again, Adobe just tastes like closed to me. I'd be so confused :p

  • Worth making the point again that it's not Windows 8 that won't support Flash, it's that "Metro-style" Windows 8, which is to Windows as iOS is to Mac OS. So, only really the basis for tablets and some handsets.

In the meantime, there aren't any technologies that can really replace all of Flash's capabilities at the moment -- particularly the ones used in Glitch. HTML doesn't. Edge definitely doesn't. Maybe they will at some point, which would be when it would be worth doing. In the meantime, Flash is still moving forward (have you seen some of the 3D stuff now? Amazing, really)

Personally, native apps might bring me a modicum of performance improvement, but I totally understand why Tiny Speck doesn't want to go down that route. First there's the issue of compatibility (vital if we're all to continue playing in the same world) but more importantly, who'd set themselves up for a lifetime of misery maintaining and expanding native apps that run across every platform? Not me.
