I love Glitch but...

Hi fellow Glitchen,

I'm here posting my first discussion, I usually only reply. Sometimes my replies have been constructive, most of the times not... maybe because I've loved Glitch, but not have been obsessed with it.

Yes, I'm a beta, but not a die hard beta. I started beta around in August, a couple weeks after GNG music was included for the shutdowns and by that time, a whole community was already very close to each other so I was more of an observer of the patterns in the Glitch society. And I stayed. I stayed because I loved the interaction among players, the kindness and the awesomeness. Always someone tending a hand, someone giving you something, helping you with the quest, etc.

It was awesome. I totally matched my personality, me being a giver and a natural helper. And my personality helped me befriend lots of these long time betas in little time. Soon I was a beta myself and more or less known to a couple key players and Glitch stars as I called them.

Then the reset came and the launching.

The game was still the same, but there was a disturbance in the force. If you know what I mean. What happened is that the betas, would try to help and mingle with the newbs, but the newbs came from very different places, MMO backgrounds... more races for money or exp, prices skyrocketting and then plummetting. As i said before, a disturbance in the force. Nothing was the same again.

My background was a kid's game called Runescape from Jagex. I adored playing RS, but all I missed without knowing it, was the warmth and the maturity of adult players. Not saying that all players here in Glitch are mature enough, but let's just say we outnumber the jerks and that's awesome, again.

And now, here's the 'but':

But... I find the game is starting to show some flaws. For starters, it's a bit boring now. I'm more of a quest person, not a currants hoarder or a merchant. So even though I surpass the 200k in money and assets (once you have 200k in Glitch, you can do ANYTHING you want), there is nothing else I can buy that is worth it. Money wise, my last big purchase was my house in Alakol. Which I don't like so much because I can't plant herbs...

And even though I still have 6 or 7 skills to go, I know that 3 or 4 of these don't have quests for ataining the level and bagdes, well, let's say I have the most of them.

Yes, I have my friends, and the parties. Which I DJ myself. I love my friends. I like beating people at the Ancestral Lands, something I do 3 times a day. I'm working on the icons, I still have 5 to go. And yes, I'm still amazed of the interaction of players, now that the force is a bit more balanced. Younglings were able to learn from their masters. Became good Padawans. But still something is missing.

So I would like to search within myself with your help... why is this starting to bore me. Is it only me? Is it you also? Is it the game? The sudden bunch of rules all over the place?

I wanted to add links to forum discussions. The first are why I still like Glitch:

www.glitch.com/forum/genera...
www.glitch.com/forum/genera...
www.glitch.com/forum/genera...

And these are why I don't like it so much anymore:

Alts and consequences (someone got suspended today, btw)
www.glitch.com/forum/genera...
www.glitch.com/forum/genera...

Drama in Glitch
www.glitch.com/forum/genera...

And latest drama in Glitch. All time favorite player gets suspended and it doesn't end there, because everyone feels they should voice their opinions
www.glitch.com/forum/genera... (edited several times by poster)
www.glitch.com/forum/genera...
www.glitch.com/forum/genera... (edited more times by poster)

People whining about alts and keys and unfairness this gives
www.glitch.com/forum/genera...

House renting (with herb patches)
www.glitch.com/forum/genera...
www.glitch.com/forum/genera...

First, I don't like drama. And I don't like making a show of myself. I know that people are rude and stuff, and I chose to : 1) say it to their face 2) trust in the system or moderators to end the situation if number 1 doesn't work. But I see people are too involved in the game, and don't trust the decisions or throw a tantrum because they didn't like the decision at all.

Second: Unfairness in the game. 900 currants a Hairball is not unfair?? Paying 50k for a house that I can't use for herbs, while the bogs are cheaper but now reaping more profit? I'm not a money oriented gamer... but that doesn't mean I like to be "comfortable" enough and not scramble for the monies. Then having an alt is unfair, but renting your bog house for almost the amount you paid for it, is not... I don't understand these contradictions, my fellow glitchen and TS.

Third: Whiners. Geez, this says it all. They whine for everything. Don't you know the meaning behind "live and let live"? Don't you live in the RL while not in the game? Life is unfair. Unless you have been hiding underneath a rock for all your life, you should know this by now.

Well, I got it off my chest. I love the game, I would like to stay to see all the changes, but I'm so out of synch with Glitch that I'm reconsidering paying 15 dollares per month.

I know TS won't give a pickle for me leaving, but maybe listening why and how its not so fun anymore, could still be constructive feedback.

Thanks for your time, sorry for the long post.

  • Just wanted to point out here, I did say it to their face, and the only reason I made a forum post was to clear my name from the slander. So I'm not really sure why I'm included on your list of  "problems" on Glitch. I don't usually indulge in drama. I'm usually one of the people trying to help all the Glitches out.

I do, however understand many of your points. I miss the community that CARED about one another. However I've got to say, for everything that's gone down, for every hateful comment I've received, I've gotten several public encouragements, mail, and IM's supporting me.

  • I submit that most of these concerns come under the heading of "Growing Pains." I hope that the Unlaunching will address many of them.

And any community that experiences an influx of new people who bring a multiplicity of cultures with them... well, there's going to be a adjustment. The long time locals may not like how it turns out, but that's how living systems work.

Glitch is, in the grand scheme of things, incredibly new. I'm prepared to wait out some boring, tedious, or downright annoying phases as long as I have reasonably-founded hopes that the future will bring new fun, interesting, engaging opportunities.

  • I agree with you 100% Tamarnouche. I just started playing about a month and a half ago, but I'm already getting the "Where have all of the quests gone?" feeling. So far I have not had to deal with any of the drama going around, and I hope that continues.

  • Moar quests please.  And more rooks.  And more street projects.

Oh, wait... wait, this game IS fun, and not really boring. We just needd even more of what we're already getting!

Although I'll admit, I enjoyed the two days after the street projects finished, as I could attend to my "normal", "real", life, without fear that my trophy would be usurped by Utopia ;-)

  • I sort of know where you are coming from.  Why am I emptying this meat collector when my only real choices seem to be piling it on the ground or selling it for currants i don't need?

That said, last night I met up with some people from Global in Bortola and played charades for a half hour.   It was surprisingly fun and I highly recommend it.   We decided to form a group.  http://www.glitch.com/groups/RHVUTSOVJDI23I2/

  • Alts and consequences (someone got suspended today, btw)

It's important to consider that there are two sides to every story and what you've been told by a suspended player may not be the entire picture. I think it's important to consider what you know of the Tiny Speck staff and how reasonably they've handled the vast majority of things (other than usernames, which you may or may not agree with, they have been incredibly fair and, even, lenient) before believing that they're going around suspending folks for just having an alt.

  • I agree with you Tamarnouche and NutMeg.  I've been trying to stay positive and call it growing pains, but I'm not sure if these current force disturbance will go away.  I have a moly account and I'm thinking of getting my money back then seeing if it gets better before I pay again. I am trying to hold on till Dec 19th or so to make my decision; however the events lately have been making it hard.

We definitely need more quests that don't revolve around skills.  Even more around the lines of giving to others to help create that wonderful feeling we used to feel when we played Glitch.  Either more yield on herbs, more herb garden spots in bog houses (I borrow my DH's bog house for this, thank the giants he is more interested in EVE; otherwise I won't be able to make any potions) or being able to have a herb garden in other houses.  I know house changes are coming up and once again trying to be a patient little Glitchian is really hard right now.

I don't want to fail victim to this huge drama llama, I love Glitch.  Pascale you got a great outlook on this, I'm re-reading your words each time reading another thread on the forums makes me want to jump ship!

  • It's possible to play and ignore the all drama, just don't read the forums, the local chat, the updates and ignore all IMs. The disturbances in the force at launch were predictable, maybe for the next launch, if you are still playing, you can skip the first month or so.

I understand your point about being bored, I think that since the reset, all we betas had to do everything again and it doesn't seem like there's enough new stuff, but recently with the new skills and regions I'm a little more optimist. Before, when the game was closed for several days, there were always something new to do, now that is always open, it's different...

I don't like the contradictions either, because I heard interviews about an amusing group releasing butterflies in the mines, and most people in the forums thought that was griefing. I liked Glitch better before the Community Guidelines existed.

  • Tamarnouche, Pascale makes good points about growing pains and multiplicity of cultures. I'm an urban planner--I was thinking of it like a city: we started as a small community where you'd know many of the names on the street--if there was even anyone on that street with you--and we've grown to a metropolis with many cultures, plus a sense of anonymity, which sometimes, though not always, can lead to less community-minded behaviour. We're all still adjusting, newer and older players alike. It's changing all the time, though: even since launch, the feel of the game and the culture has shifted at least a couple of times, and it will continue to do so.

I spend most of my days noodling around. I've never paid much attention to quests and do my own thing. I do understand your vague sense of dissatisfaction and restlessness, but again, I think it's because we're still learning, expanding, etc. Over time, as more adjustments are made and as the larger glitch community becomes more like a conglomeration of the smaller in-game communities we're forming ourselves, I'm thinking/hoping that we'll be better able to make our own fun, make our own reasons for being here rather than relying on things like quests to keep us amused. I think you do this a lot already. :)

It is still early days. Some things don't seem fair--but nothing ever is. I would love to do, be, and have everything in the game...but that's never going to happen. I donated 2 months' worth of stuff fighting the rooks and had nothing left for street projects. The lag makes it hard for me to participate anyway. I'm disappointed, but I took a step back and am spending the time setting my own goals, enjoying your parties, and getting to know my in-game friends better.

I hope you find something to soothe the restlessness; I suspect the answer will come with time. :)

  • Thanks for all the replies.

Just for everyone who thinks I'm whining about whiners. I do know life is unfair. And gaming because has it's input from people, it also becomes unfair.

Unfortunately for us, non whiners, the whining has become the reason for many changes lately in the game. And all the safeness to shut up complainers makes it boring. Sorry it comes out so straight forward.

Look at RS, they did a lot of changes, because the kids were scammed or they wouldn't be able to skill up as fast as others, regulated market prices, etc. Then the older ones lost the interest in the game.

I apologize if I did sound like a whiner myself. I said it in the beginning: I don't post discussions. But I'm afraid of my boredom!! I love my Glitch friends!! I love the concept!! But something is not adding to my fun.

Ok. And we have our imagination to manage the boredom. But then, we could roleplay with some other MMO, right?

Yes, Vera. I know there are sides to all stories. But we having a saying in Spanish: "Cuando el rio suena, es porque agua lleva". Which translates into: rumours are based on a certain amount of truth.

And I like Maegara's post about more quests around the skills, not one per skill. More quests about team and group and community building. More giving. As also someone said: what's the point about a meat collector, when there is nothing left to do with that meat (same thing for other tools and materials). Yes, more creative things are coming, but I loved the quests in which you had to give to other players...

I will till December 17. Then I will have to take a stand. And I didn't write this post to have me convinced. I just wanted to know if it is me being obnoxious or someone else is experiencing a bit of the same thing.

Yes Shiromisa, I could quit playing, because it wouldn't be you missing me... others will. And I won't be missing you either.

PS: To Voluptua, I love the diversity in Glitch. Even the mash between the testers and newbs. Looks like the real life and I embrace that. What I don't embrace is how many things have been changing after Beta. I embraced the reset and the newcomers, but something is not as fun as before. But thank you for your words. I look forward in seeing you in one of our awesome parties, while I resolve this in my head.

  • You know, Tamarnouche, I'm grateful you made this post. I've been so focussed on the game that I've been neglecting the forums, and you've got me reading them again. I've missed this kind of discourse.

On the "fairness" thing--I had a rough time with things being unfair when I was a kid, since I was the bottom of the totem pole at school. Saying it was unfair got me nowhere, so I now rarely let myself say I think something's unfair, even if it feels that way. This is often to my detriment. But I agree with you. I've stamped my foot many times over it in-game. I hear you; I just put my usual "whee-happy-rainbows" spin on it, so I apologise if I came across as sounding as though I was saying "I suck it up and you should too."

The most fun I've had lately is interactions with others. I was in a chat with Rook and Shivian when Shiv did essence of purple for the first time. I just about fell off my chair because I was laughing so much. This is what I love, and what I want more of. Though yes--more long-term pursuits are always welcome as well.

I hope you find something that makes you 100% certain you want to stay. It seems you do, too, but I just had to say it.

  • I get where you are coming from 100%, Tamarnouche.  I also have no idea why I keep emptying my meat collectors for meat I don't need.  I've stopped growing things in my plots.  I've even stopped walking around to harvest.  I log on, see if any of my fav chat buddies are around, and if they aren't, I get bored and leave.   Like you, I am out of things to do.

People who have nothing better to say than "Don't let the screen door hit you on the way out" are not being helpful.  People who create new ways to play and share them are wonderful.

  • If quests're what interest you, Glitch might not be for you in the long term, yes. There are some major upcoming changes planned, but they still might not turn the game into one that will interest you. You could take a break and check back in a fair while later (as in a few months). Regardless of whether you return to this game or not, I wish you the best in whatever games you play in the future.

I am not bothered at all whether there are quests here in this game.. I am having fun either way! I don't know how players are saying they are bored because I find plenty to do. I think it is how you look at it and approach it.

  • @Jewel Stoned, if someone is unhappy in a game then they should make a choice, not a post in a forum, imo.

Sorry if I was being unhelpful, but I do not see the point of this thread at all.

  • I never said I was not happy. Or I was sad (which is it's opposite).
I just said "bored" and "not adding to my fun".

@riscy: IMO, you shouldn't be putting words in my mouth. Or in this case, in my discussion thread.

When are we all going to learn? That just because we don't agree with someone's opinion-discussion-reply-issue or position in life, doesn't mean either that ours is the correct one?

I opened a questioning discussion. I wanted to know other player's opinions about this. But I never expected so many angry peeps. Geezuz.

  • I feel that, fundamentally, this game is incomplete, but Tiny Speck's working on resolving that. Whether that results in a game you will want to play is a different matter--they might focus on things that don't interest you while not doing enough of the things that interest you. Thus, my suggestion to check back later and see what the game's like in a few months.

Don't you like to have a lot of crop gardens, trees, space in cabinet, fence pen? A single herb garden is more important than your mansion? Move to swamps and be happy, it will cost u nothing. Mansions are not status symbol.

This is so easy to solve... I'm sure u can point many problems about living at Mazza'la too, because this is a GAME and you can't have everything! The world is huge and each region has their own vantage, u just have to choose where do you feel better.

  • I hate quests!  I've been ignoring most of them since the reset.  If they get done accidentally that's cool.

This last weekend I decided to try to complete some.   I wanted to try out the new essence of silvertongue so I completed the rook fighting quest and the peter out peat and a few others.  Massively frustrating waste of time to systematically complete quests.  I've got most of them done without trying or spending too much time on it.

I like mining & opening cubimal boxes.   Since the reset I've been systematically doing my herb gardening and crystal making and recently brick/blockmaking without anything but a hope that they would sometime come in useful.   Since the new skills were introduced my huge stockpile of herbs have been sold off and I'm happy I finally got some current payoff for having a bog house and making things that nobody ever wanted until now.   How is that unfair?

The day the new skills were introduced I imediately started auctioning off herbs.  I figured 100ea would be about right.   Went through too many at that price and when I came back the next day whoa! the auction prices had all jumped into the 800-1000 range.   Should I have undercut those prices by flooding the auctions with cheaper herbs? why?   Even if I had done that somebody else would have snapped them up and put them right back on auction at the higher price more appropriate to the demand.  I did deeply undercut some of the seed prices going for a ridiculous 1000 currents (this when the same flower was selling for 800 and you can usually shuck two seeds from one flower).   Anyway, I don't think its terribly unfair to profit from having kept up your herb gardening even when there was really not much use for the things.   Same goes for crystals/bricks/blocks etc.

I honestly did not mind that I couldn't grow the produce I needed for eating and cooking skills for the last few months.  I just bought from auction.    What is the point of the game if you never have to depend on anyone else to provide the things you can't make?   Might as well play by yourself.

  • As I saw mentioned by somebody else earlier in the thread, I view the quests mostly as training exercises.  When you learn a new skill, a quest pops up to help you learn how to take advantage of it in an interesting way.  So I've never thought that 'doing quests' was what Glitch is about.

What's with the flood of "Glitch is stale" sentiment hot on the heals of the unlaunching?  Tiny Speck is clearly aware of this and other challenges we face.  They're even willing to risk a flood of refund requests to do whatever it takes to fix it.

If you've got ideas for how to improve Glitch, post them in the Ideas forum.  Otherwise, what do you hope to achieve by publishing your objections?

  • On prices:

I don't think 2000 currants for a herb is "unfair". It's funny in a way, that people are willing to pay this, but it is not unfair.

You are not forced by any rules in Glitch to buy herbs. You don't need them. In fact, most of the potions I've seen so far are actually not really game changing. Some of them are fun, nothing more, nothing less. The game could be played without them until a few days ago, and it will continue to do so.

So why are people paying so much for herbs and ingredients?

    Very simple:

    1) They have the money. As you said yourself. It is incredibly easy to make money, and there's not a lot you can spend it on. So, if you have 100k or 200k in your account, why not spend a few thousand currants on herbs? Also: Herb growing actually IS work. Some players might not even want to do it. It can be tedious. You can save that time, roam Ur, discover Rasana, and just go to auctions and buy the stuff. As long as you are happy and willing to pay it, it is not unfair.

In fact, I don't like it so much that every item in this game has a "fixed price". Even those that cannot be bought by vendors. I believe that especially the high class tools are actually worth much more than they are priced "officially". That is because new players simply don't need them. Even older players could just fix and repair their simple tools. If they want the upgraded tools, it's mostly a thing of convenience. It's a luxury item. It looks good. You buy it, because you can afford it, not because you really, really need it.

    2. reason: You  buy herbs, because you are curious, everybody else talks about them, you want to be part of the group, you want to be part of the trend, aaaaaaah, I need herbs! I need herbs! They are hip, they are cool, I need them, need them, need them NOW!

Well, in this case, maybe it's just time to take a step back and wonder, if the herbs and potions might not be just as much fun in 3-4 weeks when prices will certainly have cooled down, as more and more people can make potions, and other people have stopped buying herbs, because they only did so in the first place to be... the first.

That's what I really, really like about Glitch:

The game does not force you to do anything. If you feel forced to do something, you are actually betraying yourself. You can have immensly fun with Glitch doing so many different things.

  • I understand where you're coming from, Tam. I really do. There are aspects of the game that seem 'cloudy' and right now things are a bit boring for you. I see this because you are a different player now from when we first met a little over a month ago. I understand your discontent. I know that you feel as though you've "been there, done that."

It seems to me that you started this post looking for others who may feel as you do... Or even those who used to feel this way, but found a way to enjoy playing again. I think it was stated somewhere in one of the responses here that this is most likely the reasoning behind our Grand Un-Launch back to Beta. I am inclined to agree with this statement. How will this game ever get to where it needs to be if it can't grow and change in the manner it needs? It's growing to meet us in our process as much as we grow while playing it...

Hope I'm making some sort of sense while I think 'out loud.'  lol

I'm still processing everything that I've read here. There was a LOT to read. I didn't know the MM situation was such a drama!! It's like a soap opera and the main character has a split personality or something.

Tam, I think that maybe you need a little Glitchy break. You have many other stressors in your life, and Glitch should be your release. Take a few days off, hon. I'm sure you'll be fine. If not, u can clobber me with ur Senor Pickle!!  rofl
