Rookswort Steady as a Rook Buff - Not Ten Minutes Any Longer... WTF?!?

As a glitch with a large energy tank, I have needed to munch rookswort regularly to keep my mood up above 90. The buff lasted 10 minutes previously. Tonight I notice that it only lasts 5 minutes.
What happened? is this a bug? a punishment from the giants? a spiteful twist of the IMG knife?

I don't like this. It was a pain to munch every 10 minutes. now every 5 minutes, I am pulling my hair out.
PLEASE CHANGE THE BUFF BACK.

  • Savory Smoothies. They grant mood back as a percentage instead of a straight, set amount. God send. When combined with the upgrades, mood is hardly any issue at all.

  • Sadly, I relied on both savories *and* Rookswort. I'll figure it out, but per my post in the other thread, I do wish that the nerf had been limited to the continued mood drop and not the reduction of time to 5 mins.

  • I also built up my Energy Tank with the Rookswort and other buffs in mind, and I adjusted my game play accordingly. Now, uh.... well...

    I absolutely would not have upgraded in that way otherwise.

    Can I go back to an Energy Tank level where I would now be more comfortable? Given this change? You can keep the iMG. 

    I can understand why it is being adjusted but, you know, we're all in this Beta thing together. A bit of give and take, take and give, etc. 

    I understand the need for tweaks but, with this change... 

    I just feel kind of screwed. Misled. If I'm stuck with it, that is.

    BTW. I asked this in Live Help yesterday, and am hoping for an answer soon, but what is the limit on the Energy Tank upgrades? I've seen some people at over 13,000. 

    Other upgrades are capped. Just wondering.

  • I really dis-like this change a lot, please change it back!

    also - savory smotthies recipe contain an ingredient you have to buy-the oily dressing . So , to me , that's not my fave recipe to make.. as well as it uses 3 of hard bubbles too. grr.

  • I don't post to the forums much because someone else has almost always said what I'm thinking, but this is bad. Like, really bad. The stuff you guys are changing is fine, nothing has really bothered me enough to complain, but this nerfing is just too much.

    I, like many other people, have been upgrading and making my character around the Rookswort buff. I don't even use Rookswort all the time, I still depend on meditation but when I'm really hard at work on something I like to know that I'll get the maximum amount of imagination when I'm finished. If I have to fight tooth and nail to get as much imagination as possible I don't really see myself playing for much longer...I don't want the game to be so easy it becomes silly to play, but at the same time I don't want to feel like I'm playing some crazy hard strategy game.

    I'll try out this nerf and try to make it work to the best of my ability but I really, REALLY hope it gets changed back.

  • If this is so, it is TERRIBLE. It was already aggravating having to munch every 10 minutes or so. Five is just ridonkulous.

    I would never have increased my energy tank if I thought mood maintenance was going to be made even harder. The mood upgrade cards do not sufficiently compensate.

    Please, please bring back the 10 minute buff!

    Again... devs... please change it back.  There was no reason to nerf it, just NO reason at all other than to make the game already harder, when we were ALREADY working to compensate for it being too hard to keep our moods up as it was.  :<

    And, yes...I know just how much work y'all have been doing to the game (been here for it all) - nerfs or not, you're still stuck with me :)

  • Piratice & Tibbi: the reason is pretty simple — it was just too powerful. Rookswort is very easy to produce and with 6 of them (very cheap to produce) a player can prevent any periodic mood loss for a full hour (with a huge tank size, that's a lot). That means that everyone "should" just use rookswort all the time, and we try to avoid single-best-strategies in the game mechanics.

    (Now, with the new upgrades and rookswort use, it'll take about 25 minutes to fall from 100% to 90% mood (which is the threshold most people care about … after that, mood loss is much slower). But, since most actions in the game produce some mood (petting, massaging, planting, tending, etc.) it's likely that most people will stay up above 90% for much longer when they are actively playing.)

    To Stoot and the Devs, keep up the good work! 
    I doubt I'll ever find a reason to stop playing this game (and I minor tweek like this is far from ragequit worthy).

  • @Teena:  I've changed into black mourning clothes too.

    Most of the time I kept mood up with milk, meditation, coins, the usual.  I used rookswort if I visited a friend's house or went to a party.. the social stuff when I wanted a break from watching the mood meter or constant doing.   I'll miss it.    Maybe TS has a great reason for the nerf.  *shrug*  But, still...

    But if there are cards I can buy to get back to my casually stroll about Ur, chat, harvest, and otherwise NOT be a powerplayer? I'll buy those.

  • How about adjusting the way mood is tied to energy tank instead? Maybe having a larger energy tank could mean you DON'T lose mood at the same proportional rate as when it's smaller. Maybe it could be a somewhat slower rate of mood loss.

    Because really, at this point, I sincerely wish I had not enlarged my energy tank. Having to interrupt what I'm doing to munch herb, meditate, and glug butterfly milk all the time just isn't my idea of interesting or fun.

    (Do staff/devs play with high-energy-tank avatars sometimes, so you can get a feel for what it's like?)

  • @stoot Maybe the fact that *everybody* oughta be a rookswort junkie under the old regime was an indication that the mood debuff mechanic was just too onerous (perhaps especially for large-tank players)?

    In other words, maybe you fixed the wrong thing here.

  • Savory Smoothies are a great drink to help with mood management.  Pretty cheap to make and the mood restoration scales pretty well since its based on your current mood.

    Will there be some adjustment/option for those that have been buying into the (seemingly) endless supply of Energy Tank upgrade cards? 

    You know, similar to the rollback on the Quoin Multiplier cards that were (correctly) considered "too powerful" and allowed "single-best-strategies" when reviewed in hindsight.

    You get what I'm saying, right? 

    Because of the Rookswort buff, people upgraded their Energy Tanks. Now the buff is gone. But they're left with the upgrades... and the corresponding unplanned and undesired problems/challenges associated with the upgraded tanks, and the effect of that on their game play.

    Stoot, did the 25 mins apply if the energy/mood tank is increased with the tank upgrade cards IF you have not gotten all the mood loss upgrade cards?

    I would really like to get rid of my energy tank upgrade cards please since the wording didn't show they would effect mood the way they do. Nerfing the rookswork without letting us get rid of the tank cards is just cruel. At least give us a chance to get the mood loss cards first before deciding if we want the tank cards now that we understand what they do.

  • Jesus Christ (!) — no, we will not be doing a refund. And, the buff wasn't taken away, it was nerfed … and we made sure to introduce the new upgrades beforehand … and we're still watching and tweaking.

    Overall, for the people with the largest tanks, the upgrades alone (ie., without using rookswort) are a better deal, IMO: now, if you neglect to munch it for a while, your mood drops much less precipitously in the time you are not on rookswort.

    Yes, to ensure the absolute best results, you have to munch every 5 minutes instead of every 10 … but for the people who can tolerate performing some action with only a 1.1 or even 1.0 mood-iMG multiplier, the upgrades are a one-cost/not-every-10-minute way to get much farther on the same amount of mood going in: you effectively get to play with a mood tank half the size of your energy tank.

    But that doesnt help those of us who dont get the mood upgrade cards offered to us. Is it possible to tweak the upgrade cards so the mood ones get offered on a higher chance ratio please.

  • Teena: I just checked and the chances were a little low, so I bumped them up (won't go out till tomorrow though).

    Tibbi: I'll check in to the amount of effort required to have the support team manually reduce the sizes of the tanks if a player requests it via a help case (but, no refund of the cost to upgrade; and I am pretty sure anyone who took us up on it would regret it when everything is done).

    Stoot points out that mood management can still be done reasonably.  The problem is that mood management just isn't fun.  That, I think, was the real buff of Rookswart -- it let you ignore a mechanic that just isn't fun to deal with at times when it wasn't fun to deal with.  To pick an extreme, but valid, example, mechanics that punish you for going to the bathroom are bad.

  • As always, nice to see you in the fray, stoot, and happy you're once again engaging your adoring and occasionally cantankerous playerbase.

    Here's the upshot I came to in dialog with my betters:  If the intent, even the jingle -- hell, the mission statement -- is to "play for a long while," then stuff that gets in the way of hanging out, playing in a relaxed (spade, heart, not diamond -- ie, Bartle's quadrants) way, then those dynamics that feed into NOT being able to do that are going to drum out a certain kind of player.

    I'm trying the "let's wander around Ur with cocktails and herbs" thing, with supplementary mood milk, and lots of meat.

    It's less fun. It feels more frenetic.  It makes me not want to stop and chat mid-task to the groups (resource, global, etc) that are blowing up while I'm on walkabout.

    In my usecase, I'm accustomed to be able to walk around with sufficient resources that I don't have the stress I have in my work life.  Prior to unlaunch? Mood solution was farm a tonne of butterfly milk.  Post-IMG? Rookswort addict.  Now? I'm lost.  I'll figure out the best path as the tweaking continues, but I will say that after nearly a year of playing, tonight did not feel the same. It felt forced. I disliked it.  I know that means my habits/adaptive strategies need to change; but they've largely gone unchanged, or tweaked slightly, to do what I have always done in Ur, which is faff about joyfully.

    I'll let you know what I'll do to cope as I figure it out. I suspect savory smoothies are not the answer.

    At the end of the day, tho, having a timeout on your ability to play well (ie, earn max img for actions) just feels like it suppresses the ability to "play for a long while," without packing like a survivalist.

    I suspect that the buff as it stood (10 min) made it too easy for diamonds; but it worked super well for spade/hearts like me.

    I suspect the balance is in the cards: I'll be buying those until I max. Because I don't want to worry about mood v. much. I just want high img for actions, and to be able to socialize/explore as I please. Without 6 bags full of milk, a sack of savory smoothies, and my entire crop of rookswort.

  • Stoot responds with "One step at a time :)" but I would submit that in that case the steps are out of order.  Right now I don't even want to log in because the second I do I am "on the clock" and under pressure to maintain that damned mood.  Compare the previous situation, where I could decide to log in, wait for Glitch to load, poke around, and decide what I want to do.  Now, I know there's a chore waiting for me.

    Anyone else get the feeling we're being given a few puzzle pieces each day/week to a 10,000 piece puzzle but we don't have the box lid to see what the full picture looks like yet?  And some of us had old puzzle pieces to the wrong puzzle, so they have to take those away before they give us the right ones to the current puzzle?  I just get the feeling that there is a much bigger picture that few of us can see right now because we're in the weeds...or maybe it's herbs...

    ETA: Though I will agree, it's kinda sad that it's harder to be social with this buff changed.  However, I guess I hope they thought it through enough to give us other options that maybe I just don't know about yet.
