Real Life Release Party?

I've had several conversations out-of-game with players who all seemed to think the idea of a real life meetup for the release of the game would be fun. I wanted to know who would be down for that. Since there are obviously users all over the (real) world, we could do several regional parties instead of one big one. Obviously this is a little ways off, but I'm interested to hear what everyone thinks.

  • I LOVE the idea but when would it be? There's no doubt that 1/3 of he world would be asleep at the time. :/

  • Cerulean - that's why my idea was to try to have multiple regional parties all over the world. Some in North America, some in Europe, etc. Not necessarily at the same exact times. And there are still months to go for this to be a real thing.

  • Ah. I love it. So... would these be like Skype or Tinychat parties or something? Or even better, actual physical get-togethers with people still being able to attend virtually via webcam and mic and stuff. I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

  • I meant a really real in-person everybody comes together shindig! Think of how much fun that would be!
Posted 19 months ago by That Kid Tyler Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yeah, sounds good. But what about the people that want to partiicpate but live too far from a major metro/city (where people are more likely to physically band together)?

  • I'll host a Oregon party =)

  • Cerulean - that's where your idea of a webparty could be handy.

  • I'd like to co-host a Los Angeles get-together. I say Co-Host because Los Angeles has the population equal to that of a small planet. And it would probably be at a public venue like a park. I saw we have a Glitch Picnic Potluck! :P

  • We've been talking about a Florida party in the Florida Glitch group.

  • Missouri!!!!!  You all can come here, its pretty here

  • I wonder if we could do several regional parties that briefly connect to other regional parties via skype for a quick hello.

I'd be happy to host an Austin, TX party, I know there's a few folks around here.

I'd love to see for people to dress like their avatar and bring food & drinks from the glitch recipes. :)

  • I remember from the Where You Live thread that there are several of us in and around the Pittsburgh Area. Any thoughts about that?

  • I can't host because my apartment makes gregarious towers look large, but I'd love to attend a norcal party!

  • Could be fun - do we have other DC/Baltimore area Glitches?
Posted 19 months ago by jasbo Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Jasbo-I'm actually in the middle between DC and Pittsburgh as the crow flies.

  • Nobody from Missouri?

  • jasbo and Holly Waterfall I'm jumping in to represent DC!
Posted 19 months ago by tallmerebear Subscriber! | Permalink
  • What's up @jasbo @holly waterfall & @tallmerebear I'm in DC (Eastern Market if that means anything to y'all.)  I've got a tiny row house apartment but my wife and I have comfortably (cozily) hosted up to 6 people in our tiny living room.  As long as there is not heat wave (our AC can barely keep up with 95+ as it has been) we'd love to have some Glitches over.  If it grows to number beyond our capacity, maybe we can meet somewhere in the 'burbs where larger domiciles are more affordable! :D

  • I think it's safe to say that Gloopy and I would both be down for a release party in DC.

  • Oh, at Glitch party could only be held in Chicago for Chicago is the bestest!

  • I suggest the name GlitchCon (for real life Glitch get-togethers).

  • Yes!!! Love it Cherry Farmer.

  • It looks like the Florida GlitchCon is going to be in Orlando, I haven't got a clue about venues, I'm hoping any of our Orlando area folks will step up to pick one out.

  • +1 to FrankenPaula's idea about dressing like our avatars and maybe trying our hand at recreating some foods/drinks as well.

  • We could utilize Meetup.com's "Meetup Everywhere" services, somehow, to help organize this. I happen to be a Meetup Organizer/Subscriber (meaning I run a Meetup group and help run others and I do pay $144 a year to do so) so I might be able to help get this set up, too, if we do utilize this.

  • What an awesome resource, Cerulean. I'm thinking that's an excellent idea to organize this gathering.
Posted 19 months ago by That Kid Tyler Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yes, meetup.com is great for organizing, er, meetups. I was going to suggest it myself.
Posted 19 months ago by Fussycat Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Alternatively - given all the time and hard work us Beta testers have put in, Tiny Speck could pay for us all to travel first class to a big party in Las Vegas as a thank you!  +1 for that (and will get coat now)

  • serfer0, where should said Chicago party be held?
Posted 19 months ago by Jennyanydots Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yes, a DC-based party would definitely need hearty AC (unless launch is pushed way back into the fall) and plenty of power outlets for laptops chugging away to render Flash....

I'd offer our house in the burbs, but nonglitchplaying husband might not be too pleased by a group of strangers - we also are not very conveniently located for those who need public transport.  I wonder if there is an internet cafe or something that might have a private or semiprivate space we could take over?  An accommodating coffee shop?  Something that is easily metro-accessible?

  • My game night group has three places it rotates through that can accommodate groups of 20 (at tables) as long as everyone buys at least a drink: Teaism in Penn Quarter, Soho Tea & Coffee and Bread & Brew in Dupont. They might work as long as we didn't schedule the same night as game night and weren't too rowdy. If folks were willing to put up money, we could also rent a function room somewhere, but I'm much less familiar with good places for that.

  • Tip: If it is going to be on Release day, make sure everyone has excellent internet connections at their locations...many hotels offer only marginal WIFI/internet no matter what they say...

I was originally thinking a release party would be fun, until I realized that many will want to have their high speed connections to race around the world at reset for hours upon hours....

But I'm still interested to see what the consensus is...might attend...would prefer a pre-release party (looking forward to going live) to give folks time to get home and settled for the actual release, or a post release (yea! we made it, we were there, I finally got a few hours of sleep three days later) party.  Especially if there is discussion that they wouldn't happen at the exact same time anyway...just some alternate thoughts.

  • I'm up for organising one in the Isle of Man .. but it will probably be just me ... and my 5-year old who loves Glitch (Dad, is it open? Dad, is it open yet? Dad, have you checked if it's open today ....)

  • Sorry to be a party pooper, but after the reset and the game being released, I'd be far too busy playing to want to be sociable.
I can just imagine a room full of people all glued to their laptops and ignoring each other lol

  • So we need to do the meetup the day before the release, I think!
Posted 18 months ago by EgIantine Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Ebil - I had thought about a group project for the partygoers - I had noqualia over at my house recently and we were having a lot of fun just running around after barnacles and helping each other move house without the hassle of having to type to chat.

BUT - remembering that we're all going to be busted back to Level 1, that's not really going to be possible!  I think a prerelease party might be better - I love Teaism, but I've never been to Bread & Brew - that sounds cool...

Fair warning - Gloopy and Sheepy and I are all in more or less the same line of work (though I've never met either of them IRL).  Hopefully it won't be shop-talk ahoy!

  • I had thought about having a countdown party ending with a burst like you would see at New Year's, and then making it a LAN party (LOL) for all of us to play together. The only problem with that would be the tremendous lag!
Posted 18 months ago by Cerulean Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Hey, I'm up for a DC party!  Teaism is a great place, although it gets busy on week day afternoons.    I teach school, so I hope it would be after 4pm or so if it's a weekday.  Let me know if you need help organizing or whatever.  I think getting together is a great idea.

  • Maybe we could have parties the day/night before launch - kind of like one last RL hurrah before we inevitably spend hours in front of the computer (well, at least until I inevitably spend hours in front of it haha)
Posted 18 months ago by Gitchy Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yeah, you guys go party live, I'm gonna run up some levels in-game meanwhile ;)
Posted 18 months ago by Cefeida Subscriber! | Permalink
  • my two senses ..

it will be rather difficult for most people to make it to a group launch event, but everyone should be able to participate in such a thing.

i would suggest making the event a virtual one, using rapidly shared video or rapidly shared photos or rapidly shared audio or all of the above to connect real life celebrations .. both group and solo events.

you could have parties of people attend the virtual meetup while having their own 'in person' meetups with groups of people .. but people who are on their own can join in virtually and do fun stuff like decorate their house with glitch items or dress up like their glitch avatar or make glitch food items and so on.

maybe just focus the whole thing around a forum topic updated as the day goes on. real life events with both groups and individuals sharing their IRL glitch celebrations in near real time.

  • Some of us Austinites had talked about this, too, but now that I think about it, I think a prerelease party would definitely make more sense because we all will be totally sucked into the game when it opens :D Now I'd say in Austin, you COULD find somewhere with a load of Wi-Fi and computers (duh), but as someone pointed out, we'd still probably just ignore each other:) Anyway, anyone got a house? Hank and I can bring booze and food, but our townhome sucks and is way too small to host a party!
Posted 18 months ago by RM Subscriber! | Permalink
  • anacronismo, I'm south bay and could probably be convinced if it were a pre-launch party. Would you consider coming south instead? (And where are the other folks in the SF Bay Area, hmmm? Surely there are more than two of us....)

  • I'd be happy to host a party in Austin. Though since at least 3 of us (Rascalmom, Nanookie and me) from the area are also in happy crabs, we should also at some point go to the crab shack and eat some crabs!!! I want to exact my revenge on their picky musical tastes. :)
