Forums and Reset

Wondering if the forums will be reset as well, or if they will continue, as is, after the reset/opening?  I think there are a bunch of great ideas that are posted (but not yet implemented), and I'd hate for them to be lost...but at the same time, the big reset seems like it could be a time for a bit of spring, er, summer, cleaning too.

  • there are some issues with keeping old forum posts around, like if they have out of date information that people [like new players] find much later and assume to still be true .. but generally speaking this isn't a significant problem.

i do like the flickr forum system where all topics with no further activity beyond a certain age are locked so that they can be referenced again but not bumped.

  • I imagine there may also be more forum sections when the game launches.

  • I was thinking that there needs to be a completely separate forum when we go live because of out of date info. Beta testers only forum and the main forum.

  • there will always be out of date information as the game continually develops.

really needs to be a way of dealing with out of date info on a rolling basis, which is why i like the topic lock thing.

  • +1 Striatic, If someone digs up an old topic and thinks it's still relevant, then they can start over with a new discussion.  If it should stay "buried" then it won't get much attention and if it's relevant then people will respond.  Really, I think most people will be too busy with new topics to go digging in the archives anyway..

  • We will not wipe the forums, but it seems like a good idea to archive them under "alpha/beta test forums" or something.

Also, yes: locking threads after a period of inactivity.

And probably also: a warning at the top of threads that are more than a month old which says "Warning: this thread is more than one month old and may contain details that are no longer accurate." Something like that?

  • "Something like that" sounds good.. Some fuzz brained no-no addict (like me) or a newbie might not notice that the they are actually perusing old news :)  +1

  • @stoot yeah that seems best - not to bury the process that got us to where we are "today" (day of that players inquiry) but a lock/freeze that makes that thread viewable but not resurrect-able. Don't know what the process would be but whenever possible in addition to the  "Warning: this thread is more than one month old and may contain details that are no longer accurate." perhaps a link to the more recent/relevant thread?

  • Sure, sounds great stoot,  would hate to lose access to the old forum posts. I was under the impression that they'd get wiped with release, so I'm happy to hear they won't :3

  • I've been wondering about this myself. Ideally I would like to see the legacy forums restricted so that you have to be signed in to read them, and possibly also restricted to those who actually had alpha and/or beta accounts. As we have all been participating in private, locked forums, it would be good if the information were kept under such conditions. See the recent demographics thread for an example of the kind of info that might not have been volunteered in a public setting.

  • Thanks for the info. Yes, definitely, something that would lock the oldest of inactive threads would be handy. And potentially some way to segregate Alpha/Beta comments from the rest of the forum would be good too. Love the idea for a warning of old threads...could even use that here and now at times. Someone mentioned more categories, which would also help to organize things a bit. Good to know it won't get all wiped away, but also good that it will be cleaned up a bit.

PS, kat...a good rule of thumb is to never post anything online, even in a private setting, that you don't want the rest of the world to see...

  • Yes, I am fully aware of that rule of thumb - you won't find my name in the thread I mentioned. But my point still stands.

  • That's a great point kat. Keeping access levels the same seems like The Right Thing To Do.

That said, I love history and there's value in those threads - so perhaps instead of just being open to alpha/beta testers, they should be open to members. There's no way to know who would become a tester (or how many), so the forums are essentially just closed to crawlers. Keeping access level to members only would maintain that.

Another option would be to allow folks to delete or edit their posts in the alpha/beta forums to remove any information that they'd rather not see shared among a larger community.

  • so i figured out today that the forums are actually publicly accessible with the way that the site has been opened since launch.

this was a huge surprise to me, since i have been participating in forums with the understanding that they are a kind of thing that you've got to be logged into the site to access.

i guess that it was never stated that they would be kept in this condition, even though stoot said it was a good idea to archive the beta forums.  so i must have inferred this would be the case from the statement that the game itself would remain a thing you need to be logged in to access.

but if i thought all that stuff, i probably wasn't the only one who thought things along this line.  so, if you care, for the record, the forums (and your character profile) are now publicly accessible.

  • Forums for most games I've been a part of are usually publicly accessible. You just can't post without signing up in some way or another.

  • that's beside the point, LMG.  i just wanted to share the news to people who might care that their character profile and all the forums are open to the world, since there was no official word about this.

ETA: just for fun, try googling your glitch username!

EATA: and yes, to state the obvious, this works best with a relatively unique username!  ;p

  • That's a fair lookout -- if you have anything private attached to your profile, time to move it!

  • 571,000 results! And I'm on the second page. :)  Being on the second page surprises me. I figured it'd be on page 10 or 15 or something.

  • Great to know. I doubt you'd find me easily with a Google search while just searching for "Cerulean." Lmao.

  • Being able to Google my user name means that I'll actually be able to see what threads I posted on, because there's NO way to do it here.
