New wardrobe and vanity

Is everyone so engrossed in the new options that nobody has bothered to post about it yet? I like to see how they're monetizing things, and how there will be "subscriber" benefits, and other monetized options. It also appears that there is enough "free" stuff to still pique interest.

  • Stoot, I understand that, and I appreciate the effort to monetize things which don't effect game mechanics, as that's always been something which bugged me about other MMORPGs.

I guess what bugs me the most is having to hunt through the list to find the free items.

  • Oh, well then: the ability to sort is coming as well. Easy!

  • One other thing I noticed, if you click on the little string next to your avatar in the wardrobe, the background changes from a day to a night scene. Is this another sign the game environment will change according to game time?

  • I am good with the paid/subscription/credit thing, I just wish for today, we could all be like Julia Roberts when she goes to the ritzy stores with the Black Amex-bearing Richard Gere, and she buys up the whole place and even gets to rub it in the face of the shopgirls at the store that snubbed her before...I am already out of credits!

Having gotten the silly out of the way, the suggestion (made by someone else also) for a full length mirror in the vanity is important. If you can switch out your hair and skin so easily, you need to be able to match them up to clothing you pick. Otherwise it's all bounce bounce bounce back and forth from vanity to wardrobe just to see your whole look.

And I also miss all the lighter shades and variations on red/orange we had with Eggy's hair dye....I am going to just assume they will be coming back, even if the color picker doesn't.

  • I'm cool with the model - it just took me by surprise (although, we know you have to make $ somehow!). I do think it's a fair shake.

I've enjoyed this game so much that I was ready to crack open my wallet to get a subscription tonight until I saw that we're getting a freebie for now. The credits make me more nervous, but I'm glad that they're on things that don't affect core game mechanics. Bravo!

  • I also like the ability to recycle items to regain some of the credits. That's a very nice touch.

One thing which might be nice, is if clothing items were put into the mix of things you could earn as a bonus in the game. Pet a tree and you might get a music block, or an antler hat!

I also like the sliders, they work much better than those in the old UI. Cheers all around for this improvement, I'll be interested in seeing how the emotions play out in the game, it looks like those were improved as well!

  • wow, nice

  • "if clothing items were put into the mix of things you could earn as a bonus in the game". this is totally planned. can't say when, but clothing rewards for achievements, or just found in the game world are something we've talked about for a long time.

the new system allows us to manage many many for clothes and features than we could previously. we'll be adding a bunch more stuff as time goes by.

  • One thing that is worrying me is when items load for a particular type (say shoes), it's ok for now, not too much scrolling, but pretty soon it's going to be overwhelming. Are there plans afoot to change the sorting or organization as the number of items increases?

Or will items get retired from the store and disappear after a time?
Posted 22 months ago by Nanookie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Oh, we need a portrait studio.
Posted 22 months ago by Nanookie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I love the recycled shoes ... cool. Dying to try em out roaming around. Speaking of walking what are the plans for teleportation?
Posted 22 months ago by Grinelda Subscriber! | Permalink
  • we had a discussion a couple of months ago about putting up pictures of our old avatars in our houses...that still would be fun.

  • Selvedge jeans!?!? Best addition to the game EVER! Kudos to the denimhead at TS who thought to add those to the wardrobe.
Also, do I get an achievement if I go for a year without washing them?

  • The tabs on the vanity page for the feature choices don't match with the size position sliders, going left to right. Tabs are: eyes/nose/mouth/ears and controls are: eyes/ears/nose/mouth.

Agree with the trouble coordinating color of skin/hair with wardrobe choices as mentioned by Jenna Banana and others. I went back and forth changing after having trouble with wardrobe choices trying to coordinate too. I ended up purchasing multiple clothing options and am still not satisfied.

I always used the "pants" as leggings under a skirt. Now they all look like pants. It was difficult to make a good matching outfit for some reason. I think the colors of the clothing were a bit off to coordinate well together.

  • Nanookie: "it's ok for now, not too much scrolling, but pretty soon it's going to be overwhelming." Yep, we will eventually start making things available only for a limited time. Otherwise the choices would get overwhelming pretty fast.
Posted 22 months ago by stoot barfield Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Suzy Spring: more colors (and some adjustments) are coming, but more importantly: leggings, boots, high socks and other options are in development which will make it a lot easier to pull off the kinds of looks you are imagining.

And, good catch on the tabs and sliders not matching up!

  • I like it. It only took me a few minutes to get my character looking like herself again. An option for pre-made outfits might be useful as a quick way to start, with the ability to change any particular item(s). It would also be nice to customize clothes; for example, I'd like black jeans, which aren't currently available, so I'd buy blue ones and add black dye. It might also be fun to be able to carry an accessory (sword, security blanket, pet iguana, golden platypus idol, coffee cup...) or to wear a backpack or similar, especially since bags are such a big part of the game.

  • The idea of dyeing and clothes-making has been brought up a few times. Since we have such fancy tools now for coloring items, we are thinking harder about how to open those up and make it happen so people can alter the colors/create their own and maybe even sell their creations in-game. (Note: we'd probably charge for "dye", so … there's that ;)

That won't happen soon, but it is a real possibility and would be very cool.

  • I didn't understand what "recycling" was all about... ?
Posted 22 months ago by Eleanor Rigby Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Eleanor, if you paid credits for an item, you can sell it back (recycle it) and get a portion of the cost back.
Posted 22 months ago by Myles! Subscriber! | Permalink
  • stoot, could you make dye a skill. Make berries, crush/grind them. Cook it up. Viola dye.
Posted 22 months ago by Ani Laurel Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yep. We *could* not charge for anything at all. But, the game probably wouldn't stay open very long past launch ;)
Posted 22 months ago by stoot barfield Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I was actually able to recycle a free item and get credits for it. only three, but it was magical.
Posted 22 months ago by Sweet Sadie Wren Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Hmm - Sadie, do you remember which one it was? It should show up in the store again, so if you remember it, please let me know the name (or, click the "info page" link below it when you have the mouse over the item to get a link to it).
Posted 22 months ago by stoot barfield Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Love my new clothes tyvm! Very happy to read the ability to save and load a whole outfit is coming, will we have a wardrobe to see what we have to wear? Great to have some free credit for starters but more than happy to pay a subscription :)
Posted 22 months ago by Teena Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It was the Green & Yellow Double Stripe T. When I picked it up it was free, but it must've had a price added to it afterwards, because it's 15 credits now.
Posted 22 months ago by Sweet Sadie Wren Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Thanks Sadie! And, thanks to you too, Teena. This is just the version 1.0, so we'll definitely look at adding organizational tools, a better view of what you already own, etc., on top of the ability to save & load outfits. (Eventually, we'll sell some whole outfits too: there are some crazy clothes in the design phase.)
Posted 22 months ago by stoot barfield Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Teena: your wardrobe is in the top left corner - choose a button from around your avatar to view the different clothes in it.
Posted 22 months ago by Bees! Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I love the new system! I will definitely spend time (and maybe money) on the wardrobe...
It sounds fair to charge for clothes but I'm curious to hear about the real price for all that (the euros / credits conversion rate).
I strongly agree with Zaphod though. The possibility to sort out the clothes would be great (with different options : price, new items, special items...)
And I hope we'll see the pink stripes again... ;)
Posted 22 months ago by Moumoushou Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Thank you Bees, I did see that but some of the clothes in there arent anything I had tried or added to the cart on so I wasnt sure. Like Sweet Sadie I have the Green & Yellow Double Stripe T (didnt choose it) and I can recycle for 3 credits. Will check the other items.
Posted 22 months ago by Teena Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Oh I forgot one thing... It's weird to have the dresses, the skirts and the coats in the same 'special items' section.
Posted 22 months ago by Moumoushou Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Teena - that's because we give all new players 5 pants, shirts and shoes to start with. That's something we could explain better.

Moumoushou - I know, right? Once we have more of each of those we'll split them back out into their own categories.
Posted 22 months ago by Bees! Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Thanks again Bees, I didnt realise we started out with some clothes :) Stoot - I'd like some diff colours too, if we could dye our clothes sometime in the future that would be great. Love the Capri's, just want them in lots of colours! One other thing the slider for the ears needs to be right at the top for me to get my ears at a reasonable level. No biggie tho.

Other wise I'm loving the new stuff.

  • about subscriptions:
If I remember correctly, building your avatar ws pretty much my first experience of glitch (after watching the promo video).
You might want to find a subtler way to introduce the idea of subscriptions to brand new never-even-played-yet people. The current 'YOU NEED TO SUBSCRIBE FOR THIS ITEM' pop-up is a bit big and shouty in my opinion.
If I wasn't sure whether Glitch was fun yet I would be kind of put-out by it. 'I haven't even played yet and already they want my money??'

Maybe for the first time player the wardrobe and vanity could be limited to free stuff? That way you could still have fun resizing eyes and choosing noses and never know what else you might be missing. People always want what they can't have, right? A kid in a candy store will be happy until he discovers there are things on shelves he can't reach and those things become the most desirable and everything else becomes dull.

  • :O Where might my grey half-dress thingy be? i.imgur.com/stPdd.png *sniff*

Oh, and that Subscribe pop up box on vanity isn't closeable btw: bug.

Great job, I love the UI. Confusing about the credits, but I'm sure they'll be explained later.

ALSO: No more nude partys? :O :O :O

  • Nice little feature: Click the light switch on the right of your avatar in Wardrobe.

Also, if we buy a piece of clothing (with credits) then switch clothes, would we have to pay a second time for that piece of clothing?
Posted 22 months ago by Hburger Subscriber! | Permalink
  • That light switch is cool, but I can't help wishing it was a spinner that changed to several backgrounds, like a disco, an office building, the firebog, maybe Rainbow Run...

"Yep, we will eventually start making things available only for a limited time"

I assume some things will always be available, but for the limited time stuff, please please make this a marketing feature, that is, tell us they won't be around forever.

Which leads me to...are any of the clothing items ever going to be giftable or re-sellable as used items?

Also a note on skin colors: The Puca and Muted Lilac shades seem very similar, maybe one could be swapped out for something else.
Posted 22 months ago by Nanookie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I don't see it suggested already, but the choice can be a bit overwhelming and consequently I found it hard to just see the free ones, or just the free for subscriber ones. We can already filter based on item type (shirt, shoes, dress, etc.), but I think a cost filter would also be useful so you can just see the free items in each type, or the free for subscriber ones, or the ones that cost credits. Maybe get really clever and have them selectable to form combos -- all the free ones and all the subscriber ones, but none of those credit costing ones...

  • I do not have the words to express how much I love the names of the colors! Spot on! 50 Gold Stars!

Will there be a way to sort by subscriber and non-subscriber options? I understand that isn't necessarily conducive to making sales, but helpful when one gets down to the nitty-gritty of getting dressed. Of course, me myself, will be a subscriber. :)

**edited to add** Whoops - Wrendolin kinda beat me to it - which makes sense, given our names.

  • What could also be great in the future is to be able to combine a t-shirt and a sweater. (like we combine a skirt and pants). (ex: striped t-shirt + unicolor v-neck sweater)
It's an easy way to expand the possibility to personnalize an outfit. ^^

  • I don't think there is enough of a difference between the Spring Sophisticat dress and the Lilac dress to make me go spend 25 currents to buy the first one! just saying :)

Having purchased some clothes I have changed my mind. It now says I do not have enough credits to buy any more cloths [ I have 20 left] It won't let me buy more credits? I did not realise if I bought items I would not be able to change my mind even in testing? Unless I'm doing something wrong I'm now stuck with what I have?
Also could we not have an option to SELL the clothes back at % less than the purchase price. Maybe 5/10 credits less :)

  • I know stoot already mentioned the high waisted skirts covering up the bottom of the shirts, so he is aware of this issue, but I would prefer my cardigan to go over my skirt instead of underneath it.
