Place versus dropping item in my tower

First of all I will apologize if this has been discussed before.  I try to keep up in the forums.
I was under the impression that if I "place" an item in my tower it could not be taken.  However if I "drop" an item it is free for the taking.

I placed a cauldron and it is now gone.  No problem... I hope whoever took it uses it well.  I was just trying to set up a brewery or something.  So if I have machines, can they be taken too?  It makes me very hesitant to place anything expensive in there... like what about my furniture?
thanks for any explanations

  • Machines can't be taken, nor can furniture unless you set a price on it.

I'm not sure how "placing" things works in towers. I know in houses it's hit and miss on whether it locks something down or not.

  • It seems to also be hit and miss in towers. Someone had an entire set of cubimals stolen yesterday that were "placed" and it didn't lock them down.

  • For anything that isn't a still, machine, or furniture (tools, toys, any other item) make sure that you place the item while you are in decorate mode and the item is not directly on the floor. This will assure that your item is not stolen.

  • that is something to try, thanks Merth.  I was not in decorate mode and I had it on my floor.  I think I will experiment.  Who will be my guinea pig?  LOL!!

  • I have dolls, herbs, diamonds etc "placed" in my tower if you'd like to take a look.

  • Please note that rugs still count as the floor.

  • When I had my house party, I resorted to asking a trusted friend to tour the place to check me.

There need to be either a consistent way to know that an item is safely locked, or there should be some kind of option to highlight/whatever dropped items to determine which are locked and which can be picked up.

  • It is still buggy at the mo. You can place things in decorate mode and some people can still have the ability to pick it up but not others. A good example was Faereluth's horse. I could pick up certain bits that others couldn't.

I would never place anything of any value in my tower at the mo and I try to tell any tower owners when I come across one where I can pick things up. Someone even had a set of dolls and 2 dusty sticks I could pick up. They told me they had placed in decorate mode and had someone test them beforehand.I picked them up and left them with their butler.

  • Yikes! I didn't know about that Cleops! Were you a key holder for any of these locations?

  • your best bet is to place something in deco mood, then have someone you trust come test it on whether or not it can be picked up or not.

  • Serenity's Mommy: But as people have said, sometimes one person CAN'T pick it up, but someone else can. Havng one person test is not reliable.

  • @CleopsFaereluth has a horse???
How do I get a horse???

Also, what kind of bits can you pick up from a horse. That sounds gross.

  • No Merth I was not even a friend. I don't want to be alarmist as some items do appear to be locked tight but it is not consistent enough to trust from my perspective. Eye Wonder's tower was another one we tested and the person next to me couldn't pick up but I could.

  • I'm on a horse: http://lem.to/p/iG2p

I could pick up the tail but others couldn't

  • I will second the caution by Cleops. There seems to be no way, at present, to be sure that an item "placed" while in decorate mode will be locked to all players. Only items put inside an SDB seem to be reliably secure.

  • You can also put things in cabinets, as cabinets are accessible only to keyholders. Attics also seem to be places that others can't access except in the case of bugs I've seen where people can walk around in the attic.

  • if normal items are on the ground, then anyone can take it. you would have to put it on a table, shelf, ect.

  • Ted Mosby: This is a common misconception. Things put on shelves, tables, etc can STILL BE PICKED UP by some players (not all.) It's a glitchy system, and while things are generally safe, they are not 100% safe. Even if placed on a table in decorate mode.

  • Yes I always have friends come and test the items I've "placed" down in decorative mode. I usually ask more than 1 friend because like Cleops said above, one person can pick it up yet another person can't. We found out that the Gift Boxes CAN be picked up regardless if you place in deco mode or not and I did have someone snatch my Gift Box I had placed down thinking it was locked. That is how I discovered that this may be a big buggy.

I have items placed on every floor of my tower and have asked friends to check every item. 9 floors and I haven't had anything taken since the Gift Box incident.

I have food, drinks, spices, cards, cauldron, potions and more all placed down in deco mode and all has been fine.

  • For the time being, display stuff you don't want to loose inside an SDB! I've practiced theft protection testing with a few friends pretty reliably and there is no method to the madness that we can discern.

  • This sucks.   The worst part is that it is misleading if it appears to be locked when tested.

  • @Treesa- Yes! At this point it would be best if TS simply removed the "placed in Deco mode" lock entirely and re-introduce it when it's working reliably.

  • This also brings up the opposite problem...things dropped or placed while not in decorate mode that are locked down.  Some people want to give some things away like cheap drinks or low end food, but can't because people can't pick it up. I left out cups of coffee for those that came by my tower, but everything is locked down even though I dropped it on counter, and didn't place it (and I wasn't in decorate mode when I did).  I've noticed others having this same problem, with notes, saying take the free stuff, but then you click on it, and it is all locked down.  I know we could just put it on the floor, but really, who wants to drink coffee that was on the floor?  Of course, it begs the question, who'd want food from a counter that I walked across as well...lol.

So yes the locking vs non-locking is still very glitchy...looking forward to when they get it sorted out.

  • Thank you, I don't feel so bad now that my jewels have all disappeared from my tower. I hope whoever has them enjoys them.
