“Zilloween” is over. Zilloween will return.

Thank you for your patience, Glitches and Glitches, while the world got littered with erroneous Zilloween memories.

These will now returning to their proper place - to the festival of Zilloween itself. You won’t be able to buy pumpkin seeds from gardening vendors for the time being, or grow them for a while (they’re not at their best this time of year anyway), and you won’t be able to carve the pumpkins that you still have (but why would you want to? It’s not Zilloween yet…)

You should still be able to make candy, and it is as sweet and full of sugar-rush as ever - but eating it or giving it away won’t count toward any holiday-candy achievement badges until the next Zilloween rolls around. This is not as daunting a prospect as it may seem – as the Glitch calendar shows, Zilloween falls on the 37th of Remember (which equates to an Earth date around the 21st of November for the next one) and then, as every other day in the Ur calendar, rolls around every 60-ish earth days subsequently, so there are plenty more Zilloweens to come. And every good Zillot will have a few Ur days to prepare for their holiday.

The pumpkins and lanterns seem to be holding up remarkably well - but the rot looks like it might be setting in, and our pumpkinologists tell me that they will probably degrade entirely by around 11.59pm PST on Wednesday 2nd November. It’s a very exact kind of vegetable.
You might want to bring them inside your house by then though, because if they do leave something when they rot, it won’t be fixed outside your door like the pumpkin lanterns were.

We thank you all for your kind patience with these pesky Zilloween explosions, and hope your teeth haven’t fallen out from all the unexpected new candy.

  • I should clarify-- *some* return versus none. I mean, I don't expect to make the stupid amounts I paid for my fireflies back, for example (I wish I had heard *before* now that the pumpkins would rot, but I digress).

Like, I'll take a pumpkin pie over nothing. But if I will get, say, uh... two pumpkin pies by letting it rot on it's own, I'll take that. Or something besides pumpkin pies. :P

As for the candy-- Well, the crappy stuff would last a week. Smarties (the american kind), for example. Also, you have to let the chocolate get in a nice deep freeze for a day or two. The Sour Patch Kids are long gone before the holiday starts.

  • Oh look, is that a new verb: SMASH?

How can I bring myself to smash my beeeyoootiful pumpkins?

  • It was mentioned several times in the original Zilloween thread that the pumpkins would probably rot after the holiday.

I am surprised that so many people did not catch this.

  • @Everyone: Don't forget. When you are an old and grey Glitch you will be able to tell the whippersnappers, "I remember that first Zilloween when we didn't know that pumpkins would rot. You don't know how good you kids have it." You might even want to keep one of your first uncarved pumpkins around to show them.

  • That was fun, looking forward to my first pumpkins in the Zilloween to come as I missed out on those but put some lanterns outside of my house and love them :).

I'm glad I managed to get my power back tonight before my lanterns rotted and my neighbors took my "prizes"

Rift extended its half-birthday celebration due to Hurricane Irene.  Would have been nice to get the same consideration from Glitch.

Looks like I've got six hours to bring my lanterns in at least.  Hope no one else in the North East that plays is still waiting.

  • /sigh indeed. I didn't know the pumpkins would explode into the roasted pepitas.. I literally had a ton outside my house - and some thief came along and took them all. -.- I really hope they choke on all those seeds.

For the next Zilloween I suggest that this be changed - stuff that is placed outside our house like gnomes and pumpkins, where only the owners can interact with, should remain so upon "deterioration".

  • To sum up:

Pumpkins in garden currently growing: Become regular, uncarveable pumpkins.  Can be saved til next Zilo or turned into pies/ale.

Pumpkin seeds - cannot be planted.

Carved Pumpkins - when SMASHED, return ~ 5 Roasted Pepitas each (well, unless they are in bags I think.  I put 64 pumpkins in bags in my cabinet and got a giant 1 Pepita from all 4 bags total...bug?)

Carved pumpkins (lit with fireflies) turn into pumpkin pies on the ground.  If you had some outside your house and they aren't there - They were, someone else took em.

Candies/Pumpkin Pie/Ale - will last til next Zilo at least (~ Nov 21st, Earthy Time), but any use before then will not count towards achievements.

  • @Babaloogow: I had a Hello Pumpkin in my bag and got 5 pepitas from it. Maybe you only get one if it is in a bag in your cabinet or maybe just in the cabinet or maybe its random or maybe I haven't thought of the right answer yet or maybe I should stop.
Posted 14 months ago by BarryW Subscriber! | Permalink
  • BarryW:
I had 5 bags filled with carved pumpkins and got a total of 0 pepitas. I'm kinda sad I actually cleaned up my house the other day -- the ones that couldn't fit in the bag turned into pepitas just fine. I guess that's the price I pay for being a neat freak... even a virtual one.
Posted 14 months ago by Vera Strange Subscriber! | Permalink
  • My pumpkins were all on the floor and I got 17 pies and 485 pepitas. I had a lot more pumpkins than I thought I did. >.>  And to think, I'd have had more if I hadn't donated some 50 or so others.

It does sound like it might be a bug on the bag pumpkins.

  • I'm glad that there will be more opportunities for Zilleoween considering I missed some of the festivities due to the storm in the Northeast US taking out power. I will wait patiently for it to roll around again though. ^^ Thanks for that. Also, would be fun to have a side game of pumpkin chunkin (launching pumpkins) to see whose pumpkin flies the farthest and all.

  • Dear Devs - I really really hate that I'm about to bitch about this (potential constructive criticism ahead), because the Zilloween content was AMAZING on a whole. It was just a bit of a let down at the end.

As an achiever, collector, hoarder, and virtual clean freak it just didn't come together for me as I hoped it would. It was really cool that the pumpkins disappeared (saves my hoarding! woot! and it has fun implications on the market & economy for future events), but we were given two options (watch em rot or smash em) which implied to me that we would get two different results. So I smashed a handful (kinda satisfying but would have been more so some sort of virtually tangible release akin to popping packing bubbles, a graphic or audio smash of some sort) and moved & bagged the rest of my pumpkins so there wouldn't be this massive mess on the floor. It was ok... I really could have used those bags sitting there waiting for *something* but the anticipation was worth not having access to them.

That anticipation just didn't pay off. When I logged in this morning to see that I could have just smashed em all and been done with it yesterday was a bit of a downer (especially since the ones in bags just went poof -- a bug, I'm assuming). It's all cool and I still love y'all as much as I did yesterday. But the reward & humor factor just wasn't good enough for the wait... especially when I didn't have to wait for it. Topped off with the bag bug and I'm a bummed little glitch this morning. Don't worry about me, though, I'll pet some piggies & trees and get my mood right back up! I just wanted you to know my feelings in case it helps your planning for future holidays & special events.

And, since I just bitched a bit let me say thank you again... it really was a super fun week and I cannot wait to wear my pumpkin mask again - the 1 face is brilliant! :o!

  • I had the same disappointment, Vera. I loved the holiday itself (quite entertaining), but was a little let down this morning that the only things that appeared when the pumpkins rotted were pepitas and pumpkin pies (not that it wasn't nice at all to get those). I had no idea what smashing would do, as I didn't have time or think of trying it out last night.

I was expecting some sort of item that would be usefully/teasingly ridiculous (can of whiz cheese) or maybe some sort of Count Dracula pull-string toy (well, something silly along those lines) to show up for at least one pumpkin to commemorate the first post-launch holiday, even if the rest were just pumpkin pies and pepitas (or some other sort of consumable we'd not seen before).

Or a doll based on the type of (lit) pumpkin. That would've been awesome. A Zille and Lem plushie, Hello Pumpkin doll, Doofy Steve The Wonder Toy and Jack the Mafia Don action figure. One per person, of course (which you could get in following Zilloweens if you missed out). Now I'm rambling about silly things...

Perhaps another year! Other than the rotted pumpkin sadness (I suppose that rotted pumpkins always end up sad and disappointing, so perhaps it was a very fitting end to them to mirror RL), I had a blast with the holiday, and it was very well done. :)
Posted 14 months ago by Little Miss Giggles Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yeah, I have about 300 Pepitas from pumpkins that were on the floor - ran out of bag space.  All the ones inside didn't convert.  Guessing they didn't know or foresee this happening.
Posted 14 months ago by Babaloogow Subscriber! | Permalink
  • imbri, I am with ya on this - the new items and badges were super-great and I enjoyed them a whole heck of a lot.

But I must admit that I was expecting a bit more of a flourish at the end of the holiday. Maybe the lit pumpkin lanterns dry out into a usable Trick or Treat bag? (One of my minor frustrations is that there aren't more colors for the bags, as I use that visual shorthand to do a lot of sorting on the fly. I name all my bags, too, but that requires the extra step of mouse-hovering over a bag to get the info.)

I ain't agin more pepitas, darlins, but it sure would have been neat to have a chance at a new something-something that is a remnant of the day without being a power/elite item.
Posted 14 months ago by Wellsie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I had three big bags of unlit carved pumpkins in my cabinet and five lit ones and I just ran home to look and there was ... nothing. Three empty bags in the cabinet plus five new empty slots in a fourth bag. I wasn't even hoping for something new and different: I would've been thrilled with just pepitas and pies.
Posted 14 months ago by Sirentist Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yeah, for me, I was fine (even, excited) with pepitas and pies. I wasn't so much looking for ooo cool new item* as a different result. Like maybe if you smashed em you got pepitas & pies but if they sat and rot you got jellysacs & firefly jars. Or something. (Seriously, half empty jars would have been hilarious but oh so painful for the impending posts on combining firefly jars ;)). I just wanted/expected a different experience from the two different choices and not getting that was a bit more disappointing for me than, perhaps, it should have been. But it was.

*Though an orange bag would have been like halloween christmas and my birthday rolled into one! Not only is orange my favorite color but a new bag color for my sick need to overly organize my bags would have been oh so swell.

  • And this is why I should read the forums *before* going "ooh! more roasted pepitas! I shall spend another day gleefully skipping around giving candy to people!"

  • I had one lit pumpkin outside my house when The Rotting took place. My friend who lives next door tells me that she watched as a piggy that lives on my block walked by and ate the pumpkin pie that my Shiny Hello Pumpkin turned into. She reports that the piggy said "Yum!"

I suppose this is truly fitting, as that pumpkin had been saying "Here, piggy, piggy!" for the past several days.

  • Reading these, I kinda like the low excitement end of a holiday. So much like RL. There is always a let down and a surfeit of candy and food when a holdiay ends. Everyone is tired and goes to bed for a few days. Then you open the fridge and see that last piece of pumpkin pie and you smile, remembering the good time you had with friends and family.

  • Note to anyone missing pumpkin goodies left outside:
They may have been pilfered by a pesky pumpkin pilferer, or they could have been eaten by a roving piggy if you are on ground level. Unless you saw someone take them, don't assume the worst :(

Also, we were given over 3 day's warning that they would rot and that they should be brought inside. If you can find this thread to be mad at thieves in, you could have checked up on the lantern situation earlier. It is definitely le suck, but not staff's fault at all.
Posted 14 months ago by Biohazard Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Unfortunately, RL stuff kept me from checking the forums, so I had no idea that the pumpkin lanterns (which I had an enormous amount of fun with, but also spent a ton of energy/time/currants to obtain fireflies for) would disappear.  I had six outside my door, and when I logged in today, they were all gone, with nothing to show for it (and the carved pumpkins in my cabinet also disappeared without leaving pepitas.)

I did have two pumpkin pies from the lit lanterns that had been inside my house.

I agree with Makona: "For the next Zilloween I suggest that this be changed - stuff that is placed outside our house like gnomes and pumpkins, where only the owners can interact with, should remain so upon "deterioration"."

And, honestly -- I loved my lanterns and would have kept them, like a garden gnome.  Maybe a little bit clearer IN-GAME (not just on-forum) message that they are a temporary item would be helpful in future?

    :(
Posted 14 months ago by Ashbet Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Biohazard, I for one never blamed staff at all :) There are no piggies on my street - I know, because every time I hatch one (that sounds odd...) and leave it there, it gets pinched... I have given up on my street piggies, and no-one else has added any, so t'was not the piggies!

@no-one in particular: Like Ashbet, RL stuff kept me from constantly checking the forums, and I can't play the game at work (Big Brother watches large downloads), and I wasn't able to play the game at home due to bad connection, so although I eventually read the thread about the pumpkins going (surreptitiously at work), I wasn't able to play and do anything about it. That is all besides the point really, I could have been on some remote island on holiday for all that matters - bottom line is that I assume my locked-down lanterns rotted outside and left goodies, and I know there are no piggies to eat them, therefore I conclude that someone just helped themselves. I know these items were not locked-down, but someone saw an opportunity to take things that were clearly 'not theirs' (you could only deposit carved pumpkins on your own doorstep) and that's a thief in my book...

Anyhoo, I also agree with others that specific items should remain locked-down; the lanterns were locked-down while they were lanterns on your doorstep, and the result of their demise could have been locked-down also. It's not the end of the world, I know, but it's just disappointing. I couldn't help not being able to get into the game, and I never got to to reap what I sowed because someone took it :(

  • I agree with several posters. Loved the event overall -but a bit disappointed by the ending.
I dutifully brought my pumpkins inside (per the forum thread, my condolences to those who couldnt get logged in to pick their door pumpkins up ;( ) and to try to clean up the house floor- stored them in a bag , and placed bag in my closet. And poof , post-rot , all I got was an empty bag. I would rather have had them out on my floor ,then ,in the house=so at least I could've gotten the benefit of the pepitas-but I did not see it in the forums (was it ever said?) that the bagged ones would poof to nothing .
Still -overall- very fun , and I enjoyed myself alot ! I thought it especially cool that you could decorate party spaces with pumpkins. I'm sure some creative Glitch is already planning a haunted House themed type party with that abilty to decorate. '.'
