2 Questions from a new Glitchite - Clothing and Love

Dear Glitchmesiters,

Thanks for letting me play this game for free.  I've just started trying it out and getting into the world.  As I start my glitchy journey, I have two quick questions:

1. In most "freemium" games there is usually a way to get items by paying cash, but also by working hard and putting in effort in the game.  When it comes to new clothing items, how do i get more credits to buy them?  I know I can always hand over my credit card number, but is there a way to earn credits by playing the game and being in the game world?  I'm not yet ready to subscribe to glitch and would like to try it out for a few more days...it would be nice to do so in style!

2. I come from the World of Warcraft...ORC BATTLEAXE KILL KILL DRAGON.  Actually, one of the things I enjoyed about WoW [and which i assume is in this game] is the ability to be very expressive with my emotions by using a variety of different commands (/love, /hug, /sleep, /wave, /nod, /shrug and on and on and on).  I can't figure out how to do the same commands in this game.  I'm sure they are in the game, since Glitch is all about fun, social interactions with others, but so far I've only been able to run and jump...and sometimes jump higher.  Can anyone tell me how to show some personality in this game and give someone a hug.  Or a slap.  Or a wave.  Or even a pinch.

Thank you wise Glitchlords.

  • Welcome to Glitch :-)

For some emotions, try out the number keys.

  • Welcome to the game, as far as earning credits by gameplay that is not currently a feature and I don't know if it will ever be one. There are some fairly early quests I got that taught me a trick for jumping higher, don't want to say too much because I don't want to spoil it. If you don't get the quest fairly soon ask in live help when you are in game. There is another quest that will reward you w/an emotional bear that lets you hug, kiss and splank. And as limbali indicated use the number keys (1, 2, 3 I think) when you are in game and active. There is also a group, the FAQ group that has lots of good info, check out their index of topics to get some really specific information. Also, there is a WIKI www.glitch-strategy.com/wik... that you should consider checking out. Hope you enjoy the game.

  • Welcome to the game! Try 1, 2, 3 AND 4. Try the emotional bear. At first emo bears will only allow you to hug others. You can also buy a moon and lips from hardware vendors which enables your bear to moon and kiss others. You can also buy a subscription and credits.

  • Once you get a plank of wood, you can splank others. That's my favorite. ;D

  • Hello Winter the Ocelot,

There are no emote commands like in wow. It takes some getting used to not being able to use those, I know. It isn't implemented now but I can imagine it will be implemented someday. On the other hand, not having easy set up commands might cause players to talk more themselves, creating more interaction...

I am not sure, but you can't earn credits ingame to buy clothes. The game isn't meant as a competition about who has most currants, and why would one subscribe (generating income for the developers) if everything can be gotten the free way?

There are some quite nice free clothes which you can start out with, have you found those yet?

  • Also, right now it is possible to get a free subscription month to try out the free subscriber perks.  Just choose a piece of subscriber clothing and it will tell you that it is subscriber only but would you like to try a subscription month for free.

  • Thank you for such quick responses!

I'll definitely try out the number keys to see what they do, and I'll also try to use the Bear that i got from my quest to see how that works.

Also, i saw the message about the free month subscription as well as the link to buy additional credits. Guess there is no way to earn credits in the game.

I must say, i'm a bit perplexed that the game has a rather sparse selection of "actions" and "emotions" as well as the fact that any additional warddrobe purchases cost real world cash. I say this because the game is very new and is currently experiencing a large influx of users. Many of these folks, like myself, have very little idea of what this game is about. Many also might have a pre-conceived notion of what games like this tend to be. For example, we might expect to be battling monsters or solving difficult puzzles or spending hours in dungeons, collecting loot and powerups. So far, Glitch has been very different. I've mostly been squeezing chickens, massaging butterflies and watering trees. To be honest, i'm not yet sure what the game really is...yet. But i'm willing to keep playing to find out. I was definitely attracted by the tagline of this game...that it's one of imagination and community interaction. I assume that the imaginative, interactive, fun and creative world of Glitch will pull me in. I'm ready if it does. However, it would seem that for such a world to exist, you'd need a lot of ways to express yourself and build a unique and interesting character you can emotionally connect with. With so few clothing options to try before I have to give my credit card number, and a relatively sparse selection of ways to engage with the world in terms of commands (i.e. clap, cheer, smile, celebrate, dance, pinch, etc.)...it's a bit of a struggle to get pulled in. Again, i'll definitely keep playing in order to see what the world offers. I'm just surprised that these things are lacking from a game that is all about creative immersion and social interaction.

  • I wouldn't call this a freemium game personally. Glitch is free. Many Wardrobe and Vanity options are free as well. Subscribing doesn't give any advantage in game play.

  • I was under the same impression. I was thinking to myself "So few free clothing options" and thought what is she talking about? There are over 100+ free options in my wardrobe. Then I went and looked in the shop. YIKES! Is she right? ETA: Or is it just that I am not seeing them because I already collected them all and no new ones have been added?? Either way, sort each category by "Lowest Price" to see whatever free items are available to you.

As for emotes, we have a few shortcuts. As someone said 1,2,3,4. You can also type afk, lol, huh, and grr for the same effect. Hopefully more will be added, but dont forget, in WOW, your char could actually do some of those that caused body reactions: cheer, sleep, lay, kneel, etc. Some of those emotes moved its body. Our bodies dont react/re-position themselves. So only actions are facial expressions. But truthfully, they are so cute, I'm happy with them. And we aren't trying to be WOW. I came from a game like that and I get what you are saying, it would be nice, but Glitch is so cute on its own, I hope you like it for what it is, rather than what some other game is and we aren't. Welcome btw! Hope to see you in Ur soon!

  • @Winter the Ocelot:  Emotes are pretty limited but I suspect that they are on a long list of things that are going to get beefed up...just not at the top of the list at the mo....

  • Using the emote such as :) will get a reaction from your glitch as well.

  • Couldn't get the sort to show free options so easily but I just went through each list and added them to my cart by hand.  Took a little bit of time but now that they are in my wardrobe it's a lot easier to swap in and out.

  • stoot barfield (Stuart Butterfield, the game's founder) has stated that the things you pay for would *not* affect gameplay (e.g., clothes and hairstyles). So long as he is on charge that means you will never be able to "get ahead" in the game using RL money. That certainly seems to make it more challenging for TS to turn a profit. Note that he didn't say anything about no in-game advertising.

  • I have to say that the one emote I'm really missing from wow is /greet or /hello. I keep seeing people that I know and there's no way to greet them other than typing it in the local chat or hugging them with the bear but I personally find it a bit weird to hug random people without greeting them first.

  • There are only three emotes (plus the AFK state) which you can get via 1, 2, 3 & 4 keys, but which are also triggered by things you say in local chat (e.g., ":)", "lol", "huh?", "wtf", "grr", "o_O" all work).

As for "earning" stuff in the game: that almost always applies to items which are about advancing in the game, not decorative items. And the reason you can earn them through a lot of time/effort is that the developers want to give you an incentive to buy them. We chose not to go that route because (1) we think people are getting burnt out on it and it's a competitive advantage to not constantly be halting the game to ask for money or for people to pester their friends and (2) once you go down that route, it'd be almost impossible to avoid designing all game mechanics around the "wait 24 hours or pay now" idea and we wanted the game to be different :)

  • There are many, many different looks that can be created using the free wardrobe and vanity choices.  To easily see what wardrobe items are free, go into a category (e.g. Footwear) and sort by "lowest price."

  • The emote question has been answered. Ditto on the clothing options. However, I would like to address the "what is this game about" and social aspects of the game. This game is about exploration. It is a puzzle in and of itself yet there is no CORRECT answer. Do what you want, don't what you don't. Click on everything, talk to people you do and don't know, solve quests and/or create personal quests. This game is about imagination, innovation, and interaction. If you choose to just stand there and let things come to you-then you will not be able to experience the full intention of this game.
