Was i really in the wrong?

so i recently started playing glitch when the open beta started and have fallen into an addiction like most other players but i am in the military stationed overseas and have limited amounts of time to play.

i woke up this morning before work a little earlier than usual and thought it was a perfect time to get my glitch on for a little while and i decided to check out the Teal-White key spawn locations.

i proceeded to Keywot whot and there were two individuals there waiting for it to spawn so i joined them and about 30 seconds later it spawns and i managed to grab it, before moving on i decided to inform them it had just been obtained so they wouldnt waste their time and then i took off to try to quickly accomplish some other things.

one of these individuals proceeded to gripe me out and say i stole it from them that they were there first. i explained i did not agree that i had stolen it and that i was not out of line to grab it. they go off on a tangant and even though i disagree i return and give them the key (they continue to badmouth me regardless) then go about my way.

about 10 mins later im at gomen grap waiting for a key to hopefully spawn agian before i have to take off to work and a different individual who i found out was a friend of the first shows up and preceeds to lecture me on how i was wrong and to quote: "when you figure out that you were wrong - then you might turn into a true glitch"

so i ask, was i wrong?

  • In my opinion what you did was not wrong. Granted they were there longer but they also have more time to play. A lot of people key camp and sale the keys. However if you were in their shoes how would you react? I think they were wrong for harassing you like they did and should be reported.

  • No.  Keys are literally "up for grabs" unless people have made an agreement to take turns but people will take advantage of you if they can get away with it because that is what people do.

  • The same thing happened to me the other night..  Except I was the one waiting.

I was waiting for the key to go to Neva Neva, since I'd never been there, when someone else came and when the key spawned they got it.  I didn't like it, but it wasn't a big deal to me.  Whoever gets it, gets it.   I just waited for the next one.

I don't know if you were in the wrong... but even if you were, I think they were more wrong.

  • You were wrong, they waited for it and they were there first. If you were in a hurry to get a key, you might as well have bought one in the auctions.
They were also wrong for making a big fuzz out of it an harassing you, but that's another story.

Quote: "before moving on i decided to inform them it had just been obtained so they wouldnt waste their time"
Well, that was awfully nice of you to make the time they waited before you a waste and then telling them not to waste any more... *facepalm*

  • You were not wrong. Key spawns, Glitch picks up key. People claiming a "right" to any keys are making up their own rules. Which is fine, but they can't expect everyone to follow them. You shouldn't feel bad about this.

  • youre not in the wrong. the key is up for grabs not a first come first basis. campers who whine about that need to understand there is no ownership to a key thats not already in their bags and instead of blaming others should direct the fault inwards for not being quick enough or paying attention.

personally, when i see someone in the key spot i usually leave them to it so as not to compete with them but as the game becomes more populated that's not going to be feasible. some campers sit on those key all day just to sell them at crazy mark up on the auction, better someone who's actually is going to use it and let people follow them in.

  • I think he is not wrong. As earlier said, keys are "up for grabs". You could be wrong if they told you that they were waiting for the key and requested that you allow them to get it first. Or there was a note that also told of their intent. Just standing and camping there doesn't make them owner of the keys.

  • You were not wrong. There are no waiting lines - no first come, first serve situations here.
Also, I disagree with everything Natz (above) said. Kindness and good communication is an important part of the game, staking out areas as one's own or creating rules for others is not.

  • If you decided to talk with them, why didn't you all just agree to follow each other into the area that the key unlocks?  Win-win-win.

In a group of gamers like this, everyone has different expectations.  Some folks believe that polite queuing for scarce resources should be respected, others believe that whoever makes the fastest grab takes it.  The truth is that the more aggressive stance is often rewarded by success with resources.  However, the more polite stance is frequently rewarded by social approval, which can encourage good relationships.  You have to decide which route you want to take, because neither side will ever agree that the way of the other is "better."

  • I have my doubts , where they victims of campers or campers them self?
Where they "the thieves" that rip people of at AH?
If they where campers they can take a one way ticket to hell if it was me to judge .
If they where victims they might better attack the ones that are camping for greed or easy access ....Still i can understand the emotional outburst.I really think this game needs a restriction on popular keys. Also the knowledge that  if in  a group invite people to follow you if you have a key than only one key is needed ! One person ask others to follow so the is no need to "steal" peoples keys because ya dont bloody need more than one ! I hope TS can think some out to stop the bad things happening because like in real life if some can be misused people see it as a valet reason to do so.

  • Not wrong at all.  People can stand about waiting for keys all they like, but they need to be prepared for the fact that anyone who happens to be there has as much right to the key as they do.  People camping out like that really annoy me, it's very unfair to anyone that doesn't have the time to stay logged in all day.  If you genuinely want to get in somewhere, you are much better to wait outside the door itself, I always try to take people in with me if I can.

  • Yep agree, not wrong at all. I'm a key camper. I've had a couple of people come to me and act like there are some rules which they insist must be followed, like "You had one, stand out of the way. I will have the next one" and I just ignore them.

I am quite happy to make an agreement to let someone have a key next if they ask me nicely, but when people demand to have the key played their way I just ignore them.

TL;DR If somone asks you very nicely and you agree, going back on that agreement is bad, otherwise your fine.

  • Is this really that important? Honestly I have taken didn't really care about the guys waiting because i was simply faster, its a game and competition is invitable. BTW while I waited I ran a round mining came back and got it no big deal. That being said we are fri*kin miners the richest if the rich glitches why do we care if the key sells for 1800 we earn it in no time. Dont want to wait in the time it takes to respawn you could earn that much (actually more) and have it delivered to you by a speedy frog. Hurt feelings aside man up miners man up!

  • +1 Mereret.   I hate a frantic grab for a key (mostly because I am likely to lose!), but the waiting time is also a perfect opportunity to talk to another Glitch and work out something equitable for the both of you.

  • Since you actually had enough time to wait, you could certainly have asked your fellow aspirants if you could have that key or the next one.  I've found almost everyone to be really nice about the keys - including sellers who've stepped aside to let me get one, but most often other miners who agree to take turns or (most often) just form a group so everyone can go in together.   (If everyone collects at the door and 'follows' the person with the key, everyone gets in.)

  • I have seen "Key Kampers" and I have seen the keys offered for outrageous prices at Auction.  I feel I have no chance of getting in Krystal Kaos as I have never found the key and there always seem to be a few folks there ahead of me waiting.  I have seen the key grabbed but not used.  if I should ever be lucky enough to find it myself, I will NOT stand aside to allow a "kamper" to grab it.  I will proceed to the door, wait for others to get there and ask them to "follow" me in.  I will enjoy the location while adding it to my list and then move on satisfied that I have indeed been there and that I was fortunate enough to take others in with me.

  • My feeling is that keys are generated to be used. They are not for hoarding or speculating. There are a number of ways the 'issue' could be remedied:

    1. Make keys non-transferrable.

    2. Make keys non-auctionable.

    3. Set a limit that only one of a particular type key can be in a glitches inventory at a time.

The keys exist to be used.

I mean, yes, there is a type of exceptional charitable Glitch spirit that enriches the game for everyone, which dazzles new players and sparks friendships and discoveries etc etc and that is awesome--and this wasn't that--but when it comes down to it, it is probably okay to follow game mechanics and leave some things to the click lottery sometimes.

I don't think they were wrong to be annoyed, either. The price of doing the thing that is not wrong but is also not awesome is that people get the right to tell you it's not awesome.

(For the record, the one thing that I think would have made this situation wrong would be if you called them out by name. Which you didn't. So: not the shimmering pinnacle of Urian politeness and acceptance, but also not Wrong.)

  • If I see someone waiting for a key to spawn, I leave them to it. There's so much other stuff to be doing, I'm not going to waste my time and energy fighting over a key.
The rights and wrongs of it all come down to how you personally choose to play. If you believe in "first come, first served", and you yoink something from under someone elses nose, then you're in the wrong. However if you personally believe in "He who yoinks the fastest wins!", then you're in the right.
That's the fun thing about Glitch. People watching. Seeing all the different styles of playing and watching people attempting to justify their own behaviour to themselves.

  • Waiting for a key to spawn for your fair chance at participating is not camping out, assuming ownership or having a distorted view of propriety. Respecting the others around you with a normal amount of consideration is being a decent person. Getting a key should not be a survival of the fittest, fastest, trickiest gotta-get-mine mentality. Nor is this A fallout IV balls to the wall take no prisoners gunslinger game either.

This is not the mining debate; no one is laying claim to the spot the key appears. But I was there obviously to get a key. And you aren't more important than me. Taking a turn is unfair but taking advantage of a situation and making something negative and competitive that I didn't ask for in my game play, is your right?  This isn’t something I dropped on the street. Or put down and someone picked it up and now I’m crying about it. This isn’t the key race, I didn’t buy a ticket for that.  And if now it becomes defined as one, then at least I’ll know in advance and It won’t be a sucker punch.  Did you really say to yourself, look at these people already here let me just jump in and sniper that key for myself cause it’s fair game, it’s my right. Well, I think I have a right to get a key that I have invested travel, time, food and waited for over 20 minutes for. The people who came after me, were not only waiting my time, but would wait additional time for the next spawn after. You simply didn’t want to wait. You had no intention of playing fair or acknowledging the people who were.

Was it in your rights to do? You’re very busy declaring we have no rights, now I don’t care.  You made my game less happy, you imposed your self-importance on my game in order to take something that you wanted right then. Now you want to play victim. I have walked to a key spot and found someone there first too. Just like when you showed up. Someone else was "in position" for the key.  We had a nice chat.  I said "Hello.  Have you been waiting long?” they replied "4 minutes or so.", I said "nice". Then I asked a question. “do you mind if I wait or do you have many you are trying to collect?" they replied,  " just one is fine.”  And I said, “are you sure?  And I meant it. I then said, "stay for two since you're already here." They nicely declined and we chatted about other things until they got their key. "Got it!", "hurray!" ,“Here you go!", “Thanks so much!"  :) “Have a great day!".   ---   wow. This is why I love glitch.  Added to friend list, and there will be a party invitation in the mail soon.

If I went to the movies at the mall and I needed to buy tickets, I would have to wait to get a ticket sometimes. I might have to wait a few minutes;  I might have to wait 10 whole minutes in line behind the people who were there before me and waiting to get their own ticket. Now it’s a free world, I don't own the mall or the theatre, I don't own the tickets yet and it is in public, free range.  -  but if you stand on me, in my face, cutting in front of me in line to get what you want first - do you really expect me to take it? I have no respect for your hiding behind the "its public property" it belongs to everyone. It does,  that's not what this is about. Because it wasn't about the key :o  It was about the way you did it. You didn’t just happen to pop in and unknowingly do something misunderstood. You knew what we were doing. We hadn't been there collecting 10 keys in a row. We weren't camping out. We didn't know the spawn time and you heard us. You heard us being happy, having fun and spending the time patiently waiting for the key.  We were singing and we were talking to other people who were right there and saw what you did too. They were waiting for their fair play. You didn't care who was doing what. Every man for himself. Too bad so sad, it's not against the rules. Dude, you ignored our attempts to talk to you when you jumped in from your hiding place at the last minute. You didn't care about anything; you came there to do exactly what you did, grab and run. And you’re surprised someone had something to say about it?

I brought my friend who had never gotten a key before. She was so excited and then you welcomed her to glitch by jumping in while we tried to pick up the key. Good job, you sure showed us, you’re a regular cowboy. She was upset and it wasn’t fun. So everyone can have an opinion. This is mine and it won’t change. And for my fellow glitchen;  If you are in the spot to get a key, I won’t make it You against Me. I'll tell jokes while we wait. or not, your call.

I would've offered to let 'em follow, but beyond that, well, maybe they should've mentioned they were waiting on the key before you got it. Not your responsibility to read minds.

  • I don't care if people are already there.  I'll come in, wait for the key and grab it if I can.  If people try to push their "rules" or ethics onto me, I ignore them or get pissed off and make sure I get the next one.  I loled yesterday when I got the key and the guy waiting there called me a "thief bastard".  After that, I decided to stay there and grab a few more.  :)

Of course, if we start up an awesome chat or they randomly hug/kiss/moon/random kindness me, I often end up just giving them one of the keys I already have and leave to mine some Sparkly.

  • +1 Mereret

Technically, you were not wrong (nor should one find fault with you for following game mechanics). You just didn't do what all you could have done to avoid the reactions that you got.

As nice as it was for you to let them know it was obtained, it might have been nicer if you'd chatted with them beforehand to get an idea of why they were there and wanted it.

Perhaps they only had a limited time to get it themselves that day, wishing to save it for another time when they could go into the place, and were almost out of time. Perhaps they wanted to see a new place they'd not seen before. All of the things Cindy Electronium suggested are things that probably would've fostered a better atmosphere when you did take it (though I don't agree with her that you're wrong).

Don't feel bad about what you did, though. You did what you were allowed to do by the game mechanics. If you are worried some, then just use it as a learning experience on how to approach similar issues in the future.

They were not wrong to feel frustrated (especially if they'd been waiting long), either. Or to initially speak up to you about it. They were wrong in continuing their harassment about it, though (and should be reported).

If someone does something frustrating like that, it's one thing to PM them to say, "hey, that wasn't cool. Could you please ask or talk to us next time?" (or whatever, so long as it isn't an attempt to force their view upon others) and an entirely different one to continue the harassment long after the event happened (via other people as well! that is silly! reminds me of grade school when you got your friends to tell the person you liked that you liked them).

It was nice that you gave them the key in an attempt to mollify them, but it's sad that they couldn't accept that and move on. "Agree to disagree", so to speak. There's no need to try and force one's view of "right" or "wrong" on someone, especially in concerns of perceived etiquette.

Disclaimer: Just in case someone thinks my post is falling under the previous sentence, I'm simply presenting what sorts of etiquette might have prevented the things that ensued upon the key being taken. Not saying that people must behave this way.

I really doubt they were campers, since they went to the trouble of bothering the OP past the event. Campers are probably more likely to just shrug and wait for the next key... since that's what they're doing anyway.

TL;DR: Communication is key to ensure smooth interactions with others; more initial communication in this situation might have made it work out better. People need to learn to move on, even if means logging out of the game for a little while.

  • It's fine if you want to hang out at a spawn place and entertain people etc, but that's your choice, there is no obligation for you or anyone else to do that. No one has precedence over the keys.  How would I or anyone else know how long you are waiting or what your motivations are for getting the key.  Why do your needs come before those of anyone else's?  Wanting to have a good time or show your friend a place that you need a key to get into doesn't make you more entitled to the key.  Do  you think someone who leaves their Glitch logged in all day picking up keys every time they spawn should have precedence over someone who doesn't have the time (or the greed) to do that?  I don't know.  I can understand the frustration, but I think it's just part of the game - it's a free for all when the key spawns, whoever gets it is lucky, that's it.
Posted 14 months ago by Midi Reifsnider Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Honestly it seems like everything is being blown way out of proportion. The fact is the key spawns, now at a somewhat regular rate. The key is up for grabs by anyone. Given the fact that people are constantly camping said key in order to simply sell it for a quick profit then what is wrong with swinging by to check for the spawn and grab it? I don't really see why any communication is needed. Does it suck when you are waiting and someone gets the key before you? Yes. But that is part of the game. If you want to go in then simply ask the person if you can follow them in. Generally people are pretty good about that and will let you.

"I brought my friend who had never gotten a key before. She was so excited and then you welcomed her to glitch by jumping in while we tried to pick up the key. Good job, you sure showed us, you’re a regular cowboy. She was upset and it wasn’t fun."

I'm sorry Zombified, but I find that a little ridiculous to call someone out over this. You know how sought after that key is and you know people frequently come in to get it. There are many more places where keys spawn to seam streets that spawn far more frequently and with hardly any people looking for them. If your friend was so excited at the prospect at getting a key then why did you not wait for one that had less controversy? To me you are taking this out of proportion.

I don't know what transpired between every party but the fact of the matter is the key is up for grabs by anyone. There is no such thing as "waiting in line" for something to spawn. If it spawns and someone else grabs it, oh well, another one will spawn eventually.

Really though I don't see the big deal about Neva Neva/AB. Most of the time there is far too many people and to me it is more effective and more enjoyable to go around the streets to mine rather than waiting 5-15 minutes for a single sparkly to spawn and for everyone to go crazy trying to get to it.

  • Yeah, I totally agree Magic Panda.  Key camping is really in poor spirit of the game, but the game is set up so that it's an exceptionally easy way to make fast money.

I was trying to go to some of the locations and kept encountering key campers. I couldn't get keys, because there were 4 or so of them just sitting there all day. When I expressed my disapproval of what they were doing I was yelled at, mocked, and told to go away. One of them did give me a key but immediately demanded it back, following me down the street to get it.

I left the key on the ground and generaly stay away from the hidden spots now. The drama and foolishness that is generated by the keys/camping is not worth it to me.

  • You did nothing wrong, from a technical standpoint.  The key is up for grabs as others have said.  However, and this may just be my personal opinion, there is an unwritten/unspoken "code" of common courtesy.  If everyone is there for the same reason, and some one just arrived, they should, out of respect for others who were waiting longer, not "cut the line" so to speak.  To give a poor example, but the best one I can think of right now, imagine waiting in line over night for the latest iPhone, and someone shows up seconds before the door opens and then walks right in.  I'm sure you wouldn't be pleased.  Now, that being said, verbal abuse is not excusable either.  You did hand the key over to them, in the end.  But from my perspective, that doesn't justify being disrespectful in the first place.  The entire thing is really based on perspective, so you are sure to see both responses to your question.  We all have a different sense of what we believe to be "acceptable" behavior.

  • No one has inherent "rights" to the key. Whoever grabs it gets it, end of story. Look, people camp out all the time and AFK right next to the damn key. If they're not paying attention and the key spawns, good on you for grabbing it. I've been on both sides. If I look at another window or get distracted by global chat and someone gets the key right out from under my nose, guess what? I don't whine about it, I just move on and come back later. Good for them for being more attentive. It's absolutely fair game.

I have to say I admire your attitude in returning the key to them. That shows a real compassionate attitude towards someone who I am quite sure would not show the same compassion to you. The community here is outstanding! Though I have met a few "bad" I have met many more who are genuinely kind/helpful. Your actions of returning the key and trying to make the situation right are fantastic! I only hope I meet others like you!

Also, I had a private conversation with the key. The key likes to be grabbed at high speeds. Preferably whilst others are in viewing range.
