Newbie Charity Suggestions

So a bunch of us have been talking, and somehow or another the idea of putting together newbie gift bags came up! A lot of us thought it was pretty neat, and now we're trying to think of what would be the best things to put into small bags to give as gifts.

Do you remember what you were most confused about when you started? What would've helped you out the most? Salt? Cheese? Eggs? All these and more?

Help us help other Glitches!!

  • cash.

so maybe a gem or something to convert either into money or favour.

but mostly just information, so perhaps a well written note.

  • A note on how to use the bag's contents. And how to use the bag itself. A reminder that nearly everything is eventually both usable and replenish-able. Or maybe just instructions on how to get to the Help channel.

Some carefully calibrated food choices that will restore nearly full energy to the ceiling of various levels.

    Butterfly butter.

  • Big +1 on the note explaining how to use things. :-) I remember how confused I was at first. Also, spinach is helpful, maybe some bubbly tea and a few of the higher energy foods, like chili.

  • Absolutely leave a note and a bag. The next thing was butterfly milk. Those dang butterflies are tricky at first. Then maybe some food/drinks because its easy to lose energy.

  • Cheese/butterfly milk. And add better instructions for these items so people know how to make more.

  • you could ask them what they want to do first.

if they say mining, give them a pack with all the mining and refining tools.

if cooking, all the cooking tools.

    and so on.

  • Great idea!  Whatever you put in the gift bags a note explaining things would be ever so helpful.  I had lots of friends in the game already, so they gave me some things and explained a lot.  But I didn't even know what to ask! lol.  For instance, when I got my first meat from a piggy I thought I'd have to learn some sort of cooking skill before I could eat it.  And who would ever imagine I could eat planks if I was low on energy! I think giving newbs ALL the tools necessary for a skill is a bit much.  A few starter items seems more reasonable.  I played another MMOG before this one and, with many players, the more you gave them the more they wanted.  Beggars became a real problem.

  • Just to let you know. New players are now greeted if so wish to and are give a few gifts. I'm not at all suggesting you don't do this of your own bat. Just saying noobs already have a few things extra than older players/testers had. Which was nothing!

  • A note on how to find Help - chat channels, forums, wiki, and anything else I don't yet know about.
Personally, I found the wiki to be extremely helpful during my few days of playing.
Perhaps if there are things people should NOT do... like give away something valuable. I've no real idea of the value of most items.

Oh, and knowing what to do with gems would have been helpful, too... going right along with knowing what to give to gain favor.  =)

  • How to find Help/Chat channels!!  I'm not sure why it took me so long to figure out how to chat when I first started...   but a tip would have been most appreciated!

  • Greeters do actually tell players how to find help once they're in the game.  We also give them spinach, juice, butterfly lotion, and musicblocks.  We can't give them too many items, since they can't hold them all.  Buying a bag is one of the earliest quests.

  • Dislike: We needs to give newbies a chance to figure out things for themselves, to ask people around them and on the Help Channel. We can't just hand them everything they need/want on a silver platter! That takes some of the fun out of it!

  • Another in the dislike pile.

This is one of the easiest games to get into, in my opinion, especially if you're willing to interact with things. There are no terrible consequences if you may a mis-step - even dying gets  you a badge. Also, now that we have greeters to help folks with the UI and that pesky salt question I think this is especially unnecessary.

  • I'm going to agree with the sugar and wren. The fun of this game - for me anyway - was stuff like avoiding spinach in game because I don't like it in real life, then one day finally buying some and going, "Huh, 'activate.' I wonder what that means.....ooooooooooooooo!" I mean, that was a moment of pure delight for me. To have been handed a bag of it with a note saying "try clicking 'activate'" very early on might have been useful, but wouldn't have been near so much fun.
(That said, I realize this is the way I play and may not apply to others. I had some arguments early on in the help channel with people who provided straight answers and full solutions to all questions - they said many players just like knowing answers rather than discovering them. But I personally think the answer to "what happens if I activate spinach" should be "try it," not "it gives you a momentary ability to fly.")

I gave away gift bags for my level 1 quest, but I just put a bunch of food and silly items in there, for the player to fool around with and get a sense of the whimsy of the game, not necessarily to advance them. My favorite thing to give newbies is gameshow tickets. I loved those most when I was new. Plus, the most useful thing about a gift bag is the bag itself.

  • I love the idea of giving an empty bag and a well written note.  Everyone will find their own way of playing eventually, and I think offering too many items to a newbie with somewhat force them to steer in a certain direction (good or bad... is there bad? lol)

If everyone gave them encouraging notes, or words of wisdom... how great would that be!?!
