Who would want a street garden anymore?

Just an interesting topic: now that street gardens are no longer locked to you, can you see any reason at all to make a street garden? Odds are you won't get the herbs unless you're online and notice the notification. It makes for a disincentive to be on a route if you want to do herb gardening.

Trees and minerals I have no problem at all with making and letting others harvest. People at least give back by petting and watering, even if I do have to shoulder more burden by renewing them. But it seems that people very, very rarely replant herbs if they take them. I wouldn't mind keeping an herb garden and getting no herbs out of them personally if people would replant them, but I'm not going to shoulder the Imagination cost and then be expected to keep re-seeding the herbs.

  • Well, you see: I love my herb gardens, and I will plant stuff there all the time. If I ever find that people are taking from it, I'll still add more to it, just what I ask is for others to clean the weeds off, replant and "re"-water if needed. Anyone who is unable to be kind to others, I tend to try to talk to then work out agreements of such.

  • I agree about my drop in motivation to plant - saw the notice yesterday and harvested my yard. I am on the Spice route so I usually get a lot of visitors. So, I then planted some yellow and purple herbs just to see what happened. When I came back today I saw that they had not grown they needed water. So no one had watered them. I will keep watching what happens.

As a side note I am not sure I like that the Spice tree needs so much maintenance. It seems each day I have to plant a new tree.

  • What's nice, to me at least, is that it is your own choice to do or to not do. If you decide you don't want to put gardens in the front of your house, then don't. I'm sure no-one will take issue with you whichever you decide.

Even if you do put them out there, you probably don't even have to feel pressured to keep them all planted up. If you think it will tax your resources too much (meaning seeds as well as imagination), then let it alone and someone eventually will plant - or not.

I guess I'm trying to say that a "don't worry - be happy" attitude goes a long way in Glitch.

I think that others can help "renew" the garden beds and tree patches? So it may not be all that taxing to maintain them.

  • I have large gardens in my backyard and a small garden of each type in the front (mostly because I was just playing around). The backyard is where I do my serious gardening.

After the change, the 4 purple flowers I had planted out front were gone, and the two tomatoes (out of a crop of 2 tomatoes and 2 rice) were gone.

I didn't mind. If I plant things there, it's okay for others to take them. It's also okay for others to leave things in them. The only thing that bothered me a little about it was that they weren't cleaned after being picked (I don't care about watering). But that's just a minor irritant. :)

I mostly wanted the herb garden out there for the aesthetic of having pretty flowers growing next to my house. I can always plant more or the option is there for others to surprise me with pretty flowers. I'm pretty sure I'll keep an herb garden outside my house in the future, even with the imagination cost.

The crop garden is free for others to use as well, though I may not keep it since I don't really care if things are growing in it anyway. But it's there for now until I get rid of it or it gets used up.

  • I intend to have both crop and herb plots in my front yard.  I always seem to have some odd seeds lying around and I think it's great that I can plant them where someone can actually get some use out of them.

  • I no longer use crop gardens on a regular basis, so I placed my crop gardens on my home street. I have a small herb garden on my homestreet if I need extra room or want to allow others to use it.

  • Going to be spending enough on just getting the street setup and the trees kept alive that I'm not about to pay for seeds or spend any extra on plots.
I'll put out the rocks and bog items but that'll be about it.

  • Just had a pleasant surprise... returned to my road to find someone had indeed replanted it in purple flowers! How pretty!

Ok, moment of faith restored. I'll go ahead and take the time to put in more herbs... admittedly I may not put in as many of the expensive herbs as last time, but keeping it stocked in purple with a few other colors thrown sporadically seems to be worth it.

I think it is the real life time as much that made it edgier. Takes a while to clear 15 plots...

I still keep coming back to the idea of the tragedy of the commons, and watching it get played out in real life and my Ur life.

  • I left notes by my wood and spice trees and garden in my old house for people with keys, and it worked out well. We even made a community pile for awesome stews. maybe a nice letter asking the favor of shucking a few and replanting would help? I sometimes go to random streets and leave things like new full piggy feeders for people and such. I fertilidust other peoples wood trees. not everyone who stumbles on your street wants to take stuff. Some of us have fun giving. With that said it would be way easier if there was even one street in ur with an herb seed vendor. That will also reduce the temptation.

  • They said that one of the eventual housing features will be serving autobots, so it's possible that you could have an herb and crop collector on your home street ready to pick them when they mature. So, I wouldn't worry about it too much!

  • I would keep street plots planted on my street if when they are harvested by someone else I got something out of the deal.  Like 50% of the crop, favor points, or XP.  It's a win/win situation really, a person harvests seeds they didn't plant and gets 50% of the return and pays the land owner for what they harvested.    Sharecropper Glitches.
Posted 8 months ago by Zooo Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Octo: I understand your desire to keep your /street private, but there are individual workarounds which will achieve that for you, without having to change the entire game to make that true for everyone (which in my opinion would be unfair). If you don't give anyone a key and request that your friends do not put your name on their signposts, your /street should then be only accessible to you. Problem solved!
Posted 8 months ago by Flowerry Pott Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @ Flowerry - not really, anyone can "friend" you long enough to put your name on their street sign and go to your street. You see this happening all the time when people get into "spats" with a griefer on Global Chat.
Posted 8 months ago by Zooo Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I don't mind one way or the other, but, Flowery, that won't stop anyone from coming to their street :( If they know they exist they can simply search them up, add them to friends, put them on their sign, and go to their street. Now, it would certainly reduce the traffic, but it wouldn't be only accessible by them :(
Posted 8 months ago by Liza Throttlebottom Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I would put herb plots out for people to use (if I had any money at all to get seeds- hopefully soon!) and hope that they were taken, because people like herbs. I could use my private gardens to provide seeds, so it wouldn't be a currant burden after a while. Imagination? Feh, if it's anything like xp, shouldn't be too hard to come by. Y'know, I think I have done spare seeds around! I'll go plant them for passersby next time I'm in game!

And that is why anyone would want street gardens. To share with!
Posted 8 months ago by Fernstream Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Zooo and Liza Throttlebottom: You are correct of course. I'm just not convinced that it will be a big enough problem to warrant such a drastic solution. I was mainly disagreeing with the idea about /home streets being proposed by the person I was responding to.

If anyone really wants to keep folks off their street, they can do the things I mentioned as well as refuse to put any resources on their street.

  • I'd agree that Zooo's idea is pretty cool...

I guess I'm back in the camp for now, that oh, well, it's really a public street, so people are going to do what they want to do.  The jury is still out for me on if I will keep a public crop/herbal plot in my front yard with the current settings after reset...might just do only items that regenerate - rocks, trees, bog items for now...unless they change it per Zooo's idea, and stoot's like of that idea... ;)  Since we have back yards that we can 'protect'...I'm less concerned about the front yard items at this point...they are nice extras, but what I really care about will be in my back yard, where my close friends with keys will respect them.

  • Why would you [currently] use the garden at all?

    Rant:

    1) It's more painful to do now, you keeping getting those scolding messages about how gardening is a leisure activity. Why did I escape the real world in order to experience this? How come this seems to be an exception to all the advantages this game has to offer compared to living in the real world? E.g. Teleporting, Blocking, Replacement after death, and the list goes on...Although you can feel the hardness of things and it does seem a bit more tangible (along with other aspects. Just some visual-touch inconsistencies?)

    2) You dump the watering can twice on a plot, it just looks really weird IMHO, to put on water, reset the placement of the watering can and then dump the watering can again precisely the same way Up, down, up, and then down again. I think it would be better if the animation matched the  something like a dropper of a tincturing kit, how it spreads around and drops the liquid mixture into the beaker.

    3) Not 2Xth century technology implemented yet. It would take care of the repetitiveness, as mentioned in the  Glitch vs GNE Blog. If there was something that we could fuel, hoes, and plant seeds onto our crops so we could move on to other things (recall that you don't have to have these objects if you do not enjoy them).  This has already been mentioned in the Idea's forums, many times. Sooner or later, we will be moving to an auction based economy, once that is 'perfected' [helping out those who are lazy, too].
(This is subjective to new housing, and whatever else is on the devs' task schedulestuffmandoodlebob)

    4) Crops/Herbs

-Stack better than herbs, even after the improvement (but I'd say it has created balanced happiness on both sides now.)
-You can get everything from vendors right now, that will change as soon as we'll be comfortable to make a great shift over to auction-only and puppet vendors. You can
    - Currently sucks to be you if you need to get xp for cooking (don't know what that has to do with crops, but proper rice and oaty cakes are no longer the way to go). Will be fixed upon reset, by not needing to worry ever again.
-The products made by both herbs and crops stack just fine, because Glitch does not favor hoarders (exactly yet), and encourages generosity. You don't need to carry more than 5 EHSP's on you at all times. Sell one or two on auction? [Alleviating the need for extra element bags, etc.]
    - Piggy Plops, true, you should examine all the seeds on the ground first, and then pick the seeds up, but it is a tedious task like feeding batterflies, except your reward isn't quite high... hmm, you can grow crops exponentially...[Ignoring that you can accidentally feed your piggy everything, since that's actually a good thing in a sense that it creates more needs.] Not sure what to say, I guess. Vendors are good for produce and seeds at the moment...

Possible Solutions (probably already thought of by the devs, might even coincide if I were to put them down, and right now, have other things to do, or might have a good reason for leaving it be. I'll skip this part for now.)

tl;dr - Gardening is exactly not a fun thing to do (yet, for me), why would you continue with it besides needing the products and avoiding auctions?

And please help me make any corrections, address points, and such.Sorry that this isn't really related to the OP. I also feel like I'm addressing my own issue and am being contradictory.

About signposts, you don't know who has you on their signpost, not everyone of someone's friend relationships are mutual. It won't help till we get a private sign that shows us which glitches have us on their posts. Which will most likely not happen, for good reasons.

  • I was considering an idea kind of like Zooo's the other day.  I think it'd be really nice if you got a share of the XP/currantcy/harvest if somebody did work on your street.   I know that mentioning Facebook games is probably anathema around here, and I hope you'll forgive me for making the comparison, but one reason those games are so addictive is that visiting other people's farms/cities/farmsteads/houses helps both the visitor and the host.  It's nice to log in and see your friend's icon working on your farm, and both of you walk away with extra bounty, or with a time reduction in slow-growing crops, or whatever.

I hasten to add that I don't want this to be a high-pressure enforced-reciprocity thing like those games are.  I gave them up because of all the screechy INVITE YOUR FRIENDS crap polluting my wall, and I'd hate to see that kind of thing happen here.  But coordination and cooperation in people's front yards would be really nice, and I think it'd be possible to do it without making everyone feel obligated to do grinds they don't want to do.

Limited because I , sadly, have already seen enough of glitches who take everything (every last iota) and leave nothing behind . I know there are many good glitchen but the bad have out-weighed it for me.
( I dont see much point in having plots out front.. altho it is pretty to see the flowers growing in an herb plot. If I did have any front plots - it would likely be a token one plot each .)

    I was worried too. But

    1. The cost (in materials) of renewal means many people will not be able to afford to keep renewing the resource.

    2.  The cost (in materials) of renewal means many people will not be bothered to keep renewing the resource.

    3. The foxes and sloths will be wild animals only

    4. The Enchanted Forests will be be most people's favourite way to collect wood

    5. Reading between the lines many more Quests will require group participation.

    6. Vendors are being faded out. Auctions have 10 minute time on them, deliberately. A Glitch market has already been tested. We will soon want to trade, sell and but, more with other Glitchen

    7. Glitch is a game, for having fun. The most fun is to be had with other Glitch. When we get over the excitement  and novelty of our pretzel homes, we will want to go out there to meet the other Glitchen

  • I have been planting a long time (for months) and have a fairly large stock of veggies and herbs plus I do have a backyard that most people cannot access so I don't mind too much if others harvest what I have out front.  It would be nice though if I did get some sort of benefit from it.

My best advice is that you should not put anything on your street that you don't mind losing.  I should think that if you are level 30 or above you should have no problem at all in replacing what is taken.  Expand your back yard enough to have large gardens and other things.  Plant renewable things in front like trees, a peat bog, some ore, fireflies, barnacles, etc.

I planted a huge bed of Rube weed outside my house - someone came, took the lot and left all the weeds behind.  Its pissed me off - none of my friends did it so it was some random **** wandering past I guess.  Actually if anyone had asked they could have had the lot anyway.

This type of post has been here a billion times before and will be again so i'm simply saying that its upset me plus I hope whoever did it is satisfied and ultimately burns in an eternal pit of damnation whilsy being stabbed in the unmentionables by midgets.

I am also remembering the chant...."its only a game......its only a game....."   Thanks for letting me vent xx

  • Why would you spend resources on anything in your street if it's just going to be used up by visitors? We don't know what the cost of building, say, a sparkly rock or a barnacle patch will be.... If it's a lot, how happy will you be if it gets depleted by visitors?

  • I like many of the ideas in this thread.

    My sole contribution is:
When I was setting up my front yard, I saw the plots (herb/crop) and I said, I know how this will go. And did NOT set them up.
The notion of a quid pro quo FOR setting them up for public use is nice, but at the end of the day, what would that mean for others who had planted?

IE: owner of street sets up plot.
    User A plants stuff.
User B reaps benefits of User A's plants.
    Owner gets a little something.
User A is still out his/her plants.
Depending on User A's mindset, this is either BAD, or GOOD.
But User A is still out currants/time for their generosity, whether or not "generosity" was what they had in mind.
    Owner wins.
    User B wins.
User A is, bottom line, screwed.

And that's why there will not be gardens in my front yard.

...I like herb gardening, and I actually find it a fun thing to do.  On the other hand, I'm not really fond of mining, and some glitchen do nothing but mine.  I think the solution is to find something that you do like doing, and use that to trade with others.  Or adapt your lifestyle to go without the things you don't like doing... i.e. if you don't like growing crops, stop eating food; there are glitchen in Ur who live on nothing but quoins.  I happen to be on a raw-meat diet myself for that exact reason ;)

That which I *need* to harvest will go in the back yard. I can get enough guano to do pretty much anything I *need* to.

Maybe if I have nothing left to do after the housing reset and I have spent all that I wanted for my house and backyard...then maybe a veggie and an herb garden out there. But with all the time extensions that we are being hit with, it'll probably be a long time before that'll ever happen.

    a) Zooo, yes you did, didn't you.
    b) AC2000, so what's the point of growing stuff for other people?  I get the idea of putting animalia out, but w/crops it's time-based and somewhat inconvenient, vis a vis, animalia.  Are we just putting out random low-value crops? I feel like the cost/benefit ratio of public gardens just is NOT there. Which is what I'm writing about.

  • Right now I have resources in my front yard, because we are testing, and I wanted to see how it will work.  I have been generally keeping track of how fast the lifespan of resources is being used up, and so far it is very slowly.  If the final release works roughly the same way, I will probably put the "nice to have", rather than crucial resources in the front.  Whether I keep them maintained will depend pretty directly on how fast they get used up by me or other people and whether I can afford the continual replacements.

  • I think that the fact that street gardens can be harvested by other players is going to catch new players off guard and create negative experiences for them when things they plan are taken.  I also think it will create bad experiences when newer players take things from the yards of others and are accused of griefing.

Someone swooped through my yard to grab everything they could and took some stuff that really didn't matter to me, leaving behind weedy patches.  I would have seen it through quite a different lens if I had just been starting out.  Perhaps the solution is to have two different kinds of gardens - public and non-public and you can place whichever you wish (you can make the non-public ones more expensive if desired).

  • This morning I was greeted by a fresh batch of purple I did not plant!  Leave your front yard plots empty and see what happens.

These misunderstandings can be mitigated by better communication, rather than changing the game dynamics.

Of course, I'm not at all against having more options, like placing public or private gardens.  That's an absolutely wonderful idea (so long as it is not too much of a headache to code).

So, thank you, to whomever did that! I think moments like that are worth the moments that they're left bare (or weedy). :)

  • Humbabella, we already do have 2 different types of gardens. Back yard ones are private and front yard ones are public.

I have only given out one key to my house so I don't remember exactly, but don't they come with a warning that items in the house are usable by keyholders? Perhaps if a similar warning in the form of an "are you sure?" sort of message came with the placement of front street resources, then at least people can place them in full awareness of what they entail. That may help.

  • Flowerry Pott, I love that idea.

Also, I'm hoping that with the switch to imagination, we may find that tending and planting patches becomes more rewarding in game than harvesting and selling!  That would also be a positive influence.  Harvesting and selling could reap currant only rewards, where-as planting and tending might reap much more useful and versatile imagination.  I hope.
