Toys for Glitches

In the recent sandbox thread Stoot said:
• More "toy" items to support free play and player-created games: like the ball that people started worshiping, we really should have dice and cards and other toys which have no direct purpose in the existing mechanics of the game. (Ideas on this front welcome.)

We don't need to be asked twice!

I love this idea of toy items. I'll start us off:

How about a deck of collectible cards that are loosely based on the Tarot. Imbued with glitchy mythology and featuring pictures of the Giants as part of the Major Arcana. These could be collected, traded and played with in several mini games.

  • I like the tarot idea. Seems to fit. But can the Giant's mind handle it?

  • A fortune-telling game would be neat – if it had a once/day limit, and had to be bought or made via an intricate and arcane process, imbued with special favor from the gods.  Or, add fortune-cookies as an unlockable recipe that would also require penmanship and paper?   Just free-associating here, but a daily lottery might be fun as well.

  • Speaking of toys, can I resurrect bluto's Wish-dolly idea...

  • I'm hoping for more things like the ball, only when you interact with them, they change colors and shapes

I would also like to see another doll. I've only seen the ones that some alpha's got.

  • Awesome idea about Glitch Tarot cards River!!  The wish dolly idea was amazing (I just saw the thread about that!)

http://beta.glitch.com/forum/general/5930/ is my ideas about some items I'd like to see in game.
One of my ideas is a cool African style mask -- maybe that could be haunted or something.  The art museum where I live has an African mask in the basement that is haunted because they keep finding scratches all along the inside of the case in which its kept, even when the case hasn't been opened!  Spooooky!

Which leads me to my next point, if there isn't already such a thing as Glitch-o-ween, there should be.  And what would Glitch-o-ween be without haunted houses and walking pumpkins?

I guess none of those are toy ideas, but I like them anyways

  • I would love Glitchen Tarot Cards. Merchandise them in the real world please! I may have to make a whole post where I convert the cards into more Glitch-y things (you can't have swords for example).

Any things that can be combined in usage to make "games" would be great.

I think somewhere we talked about making a "hot potato." You could "set it" for a certain amount of time or "passes". Once you do, you just give it to someone. And they have to give it do someone else. Whoever has it by the end, "loses." Maybe you can set it so that you can't give it right back to the person you gave it to you. Or can only give it to the same person once. (Heck, you can have all sort of tweaks to tailor your game.)

SPEAKING of this, there should probably be a way to set your Glitch to block "gifts" or at least require an alert to accept. Should be something you can turn on, because I do thing the default should be the way it is now.

  • I'd like a hover board, kinda like a skateboard but no wheels, runs on gas or something, heck how about emblems as fuel? lol would help ease the glut of those.

We could then play games like hover ball or even something thats a glitchy equivelent of quiddich?

and a Space hopper with skittles and/or slides.

and off the top of my head...
balloons, jump ropes, yo-yos, frisbees, paper airplanes, kites, fireworks (not really a toy but wouldn't it be cool?!), play dough, dolls or action figures

So, now I've done it, and you may forge ahead.

You know, if you count kittens as toys, then let's get pets in the game. xD

  • I like how there was a company that let you "commission"  a sculpture of your World of Warcraft character. They modelled it on a 3D printer.

This might also work for Glitch avatars.

  • Seconding the dice and cards: a lot of things a lot of homebrewish things I can think of to cobble together needs is some sort of randomizer, and if the game client handled that in a way that was clear and explicit and could be shared with other players, you could have games within games!

Also, does anyone remember these? Fill with water balloon, set timer, start tossing around. Person who gets hit with the water balloon get a debuff or something, perhaps.

  • If we're going to do Tarot, can we do the 5 element tarot deck from Tarot by Piers Anthony?

5 elements, so you don't need to use wands/swords/ect if you don't want to... just earth/water/air/fire/spirit

  • @ICountFrom0 - Wow! I haven't heard of Piers Anthony's Tarot in years! The Complete Tarot is best because of the extra content.

  • I have a strange relationship with tarot cards, lol. Haven't done a reading in years... O___O

Regardless of what kinds of cards we have, I would like the ability to throw them like ninja stars and have them explode. Like Gambit's. Especially when Rook birds are around. :P

  • @dopiaza Thanks for the repost about Wish-Dolly. What a great idea.
Thanks to everyone supporting the idea of a Tarot deck. I think we could have loads of fun with them both in game and on their own. Like spinning the wheel, I can see us visiting a reader with all kinds of outcomes.
@Lord Bacon-o I'm looking forward to your post about how to make a Glitch deck. I'm with you, I'd love to be able to buy the deck as well as t shirts with layouts and interpretations...all with the Glitch wit of course. My thought about the suits was Currants (discs), Bubble Tea in a lovely goblet (cups), a Quill (swords)(after all the quill is mightier than the sword), and a wand with a fire bog flame (wands).

I'd love to see a collaboration between the Glitch graphic artists and Vicky Noble who co-created the Motherpeace deck.

Other ideas that struck me here were the water balloons, flinging the cards, fireworks and marbles. We have a wonderful marble race building set here at home that everyone loves to fool with. Maybe that would be fun in game. Near-by we have a museum for children called the magic house. There are lots of hands-on activities that involve music. I could see us having an area in which there were tubes or strings that could be "played" by glitches just passing by. Several could play chopsticks for instance. Also how about a kaleidoscopic area (with windows maybe?) where Glitches could turn the crank and change the patterns, possibly even changing the "lenses" for an infinite number of possibilities.

  • @Robot Creator: I can think up as many dirty toys as you want.  But heres one for now, and I'm stealing partial ideas from Bacon-o.  Instead of hot potato, it could be like hot banana or hot cucumber or hot zuccini.  When a player gets one of these items (from harvesting, or could be just a random drop when interacting with the world) they get a buff and if they don't throw the veggie by the end of the buff they take a mood hit.

Once the player has thrown the vegetable/fruit/whatever, they get a buff that keeps them from receiving it back for a certain amount of time (30 minutes or an hour?).  That way it gets passed on to new players.  Each time it is passed on, it gets larger in size until finally it explodes and inside it a little surprise for whichever player gets exploded on.

    Dirty enough?

  • Collectible trading cards are usually very popular in other games. What if there was a collectible 'set' of something- Such as marbles suggested earlier? People love making entire sets. It could also help fuel the glitch economy.

Or, another neat idea would be 'collectible snowflakes' that the Giants have covered in 'permafrost', making them indestructible. Maybe they could be used to decorate someone's room?

Another idea could be- (and this is becoming very popular Irl with animals such as poodles)-  spray painting (?) piggies or decorating them with colors. Glitches could have beauty contests with them. To make it easier on the game itself, it'd probably be best to limit it to one pet pig per Glitch- and have it wear off after a couple days in game.

  • Oooh, what about a blindfold for Marco Polo? Other players playing would "say" something every x seconds with the speech bubbles that hang around a bit and maybe move a bit, and you find what you're looking for by trying to grab it.

...kind of sounds like a exercise in aggravation now that I outline it, but that sounds a lot like the real deal.

  • Like the idea of bubbles, fireworks, sparklers, swings, regular deck of cards, chess, checkers, jump ropes, hula hoops, bouncy balls, slinkies, silly putty, play doh...not a fan of tarot in any form...already too much new age stuff here...besides it's a topic in TOYS...tarot isn't a toy.
Posted 16 months ago by ~Pink Flamingo~ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @ Beach Bum A tarot deck could easily be an extra to a regular deck by simply adding 22 more cards. That way there could be both options. Although tarot is popular as a New Age tool, it's not really New Age, it's very old. I'm not sure what you mean by "already too much new age stuff here" but Glitch does have a lot of fun, quirky skills paths and humor which is a total plus in my book.
