Ways for us to say Goodbye: mugs, merch and post

With all the heartbreak and turmoil in the air, there's two things I think would be nice to see between now and December 9th.

1. Merchandise - but not a whole range of it, because that takes time and such. Specifically, I mean mugs with pictures of Ur on them. Available individually or as a set, but featuring wrap-around imagery of the major landscapes, including (but not limited to) Forest, Swamp, Uralia/Ilmenskie, Ix, Hell, Highlands, Ice, Underwater, the Ancestral Lands, and so on. Something physical for us players to hold onto after this place goes away.

2.
A PO Box for players to send well-wishing cards and such to the members of TS. Something physical for the staff to hold onto.

I just think it'd be nice, a way of doing a send-off. The money generated from sales could be used to give the office a sending off party.

edit: title change to make it a little more clear what this thread is discussing.

and a coupla the awesome ideas that are already circulating, but have been mentioned in this thread:
> soundtracks of Glitch/Ur
> artbooks of the fabulous art in the game, digital or physical (I'd personally prefer physical, thought this would take a while but shhexy says otherwise, which is cool)
>
portraits of our avatars
> postcards of Ur (I like this a lot. :3)
> a stripped down version of Glitch, playable offline.
> plushies, incl. a squeezable chicken
> real life cubimals (this and plushies would take the longest to create though, so I personally am not holding my breath)
> shirts, which would be loads of fun.
> and some folks are suggesting player created things of awesomeness.

carry on!

  • Please do the merch. I'd love to be able to have something more to remember Glitch by.

  • That's it, I'm definitely making that Lem hat now.

    I'll post a how-to once I figure it out.

  • I would absolutely buy a set of prints of the game art, or a book of it.

  • A digital album of Glitch music--this would be pretty easy to make, I think.  If they wanted to sell it, they could sell it at different vendors.  (Gumroad, Amazon, CDBaby, etc.)

Or digital scrapbooks of artwork, too.  I loved the Giant animations.  I'd love to have them.

Or personal portraits of your Glitch, a nice large-ish one as an image, or even little animated SWF ones.

  • +1 Ginko -- I would love to have the Nottis and firebog themes and Goodnight Groddle for nostalgia's sake.

  • I would love some souvenirs, as well, because I will remember my time in Glitch quite fondly.

If the developers are interested in doing the scrapbook thing, I'd be glad to point them in the direction of print-on-demand book-makers and/or ebook creation and distributors.  Just sayin...

  • I would buy the hell out of a Glitch artbook. I would volunteer my time and limited graphic design abilities to help make a Glitch artbook, if it came to that.

  • I too would buy a Glitch artbook, and I would also volunteer my time and graphic design abilities.  And I'd also love a soundtrack.

  • I agree! I'm not huge on the idea of iconography or paraphenalia with my personal avatar on it, but an artbook? That would be amazing, because there is so much art in this game, some of which you only ever see once (like the treehouse club quest), but is so beautiful. Glossy pages of the landscapes... ;_; waaannnnttttt.

A soundtrack of the music would be great too, especially since there truly is an enormous quantity of it within the game itself. There is so much creative talent within this game that it would be a shame to have it disappear into archival databases.

  • Someone (patient and artsy) could make a pretend art-book. They could curate a link-list of beautiful snaps, which we could all save to our harddrives and look through whenever we want. It wouldn't be quite the same, but we could potentially print them out at a print shop, and bind them yourself, if you're really in to the idea. Or just get a photo album. Probably easier.

Just in case they don't come out with a book themselves, since they have a lot on their plates right now.

  • +1 to a soundtrack.

I'd also love to have a printed art book, but I understand that they take time to create and so it may not be possible.

  • +1000 to all of this!

  • There's no question that a physical artbook would take (at minimum) 6 months to publish which, although arguably nicer than a digital copy, is not as feasible as some sort of e-book. I would settle for a digital book/pdf file/thing of some sort, but I think a real book would be nicer. The smooth, shiny pages don't quite compare to getting it printed and bound at a store. But yanno, gotta do what's the most practical here.

I'm sure we'll see a lot of user-generated memorabilia over the next three weeks and there's no predicting what that will be, so that's something we'll just have to wait and watch for.

  • I would love some, even severely cropped, version of Glitch as an offline purchaseable game. Just gathering stuff, cooking for one, crafting for one, having a garden and some animals and a handful of locations (say, one each of the representative regions. Sighs.

  • There's no question that a physical artbook would take (at minimum) 6 months to publish

There are services that can create physical books a lot more quickly than that...  I have a copy of the 24hours of Flickr book that they got printed by Blurb in about a month

  • I'm really in to the idea of postcards as well, or those tiny art cards you can buy that are just a couple inches big for little images of animals/giants/items.
Posted 27 days ago by Biohazard Subscriber! | Permalink
  • i love verea's idea- i would love love love to have that. i also would love to see a book of all the gorgeous art, like others have said. but my ultimate glitch souvenir would be real life cubimals OR plushie piggies and chickens. :)

  • +1 for artbook & postcards.

Also I don't know if this quite fits with the original idea (which I liked a lot) of using merch as fundraising for a TS party, but one way to do some rogue merch would be to just make up some mugs, t-shirts, etc on a site like zazzle.  It's easy enough for anyone to do, but I'd be happy to go make up some items based on most requested images.  I'd like like a crab t-shirt.  I have to believe someone has already done it though.  The challenge is to get a high enough quality image for the crab at the scale of t-shirt size.  Is the art for things like crabs and piggies available at a higher resolution somewhere I'm not looking?  Also I don't fully understand the relationship between kukubee and glitch, but I'm wondering if they will have license/plans to do any of this stuff?

  • I would just be happy with just a glitch shirt. I would wear to to conventions and the like and then when people ask me what the game is I can guilt them about not playing it :D.

  • http://www.cafepress.com/ and http://www.zazzle.com/ are sites that sell user created merchandise. It looks pretty simple to do and the artist shares commission with the site. Of course, it depends on who owns the assets in Glitch. If the individual artists do, then merchandise could easily be made by them... Just some ideas.

  • I would pay a good chunk of money for the music/sounds of Glitch and an Art book. These two things are some of my favorite aspect of the game.

  • I would love some, even severely cropped, version of Glitch as an offline purchaseable game.

I was thinking along similar lines last night, after seeing someone suggest that Glitch work towards a WOW style of distribution. An offline version would be quite grand - but ... maybe it would also be sort of lonely? :< Glitch is such a community game, it might be sort of lonely to be that way. But still! A way of roaming around Ur would be pretty cool.

There are services that can create physical books a lot more quickly than that...  I have a copy of the 24hours of Flickr book that they got printed by Blurb in about a month

Much more feasible, then. :D I've already said I'd personally prefer a physical art book compared to a digital one, so that makes things much more hopeful.

Stuffed plush piggies, please. And chickens, that you could squeeze. And an emo bear.

From memory (and I could well be wrong) plushies take a while to produce, since you have to have models made and other such things. I think it'd be better to have merch that is quick and easy to produce, but that doesn't mean plushies are impossible.

I would LOVE to purchase a set of postcard with the gorgeous designs of Ur.

Postcards would be really sweet! They'd be easier to manage than full sized posters, and they're not hard to get manufactured or the like. :O You could get a bunch of them and map out bits of a region. That'd be cool.

    real life cubimals

The problem again is that toys take longer to produce than apparel. That doesn't mean we wouldnt ever have them, and having actual cubimals to mess around with would be loads of fun. I am for that. But I've no idea if the team plans to continue with a merch shop of some sort after the game shuts, or what they'll do really, so I wouldn't hold my breath for something like this though.

As for shirts: totally. I'd love one with the Uralian theme on it.

  • I would love some, even severely cropped, version of Glitch as an offline purchasable game.  <--- YES!! THIS!! Maybe even be able to buy EPs and SPs for it!!

And I'd still love to be able to get a piggy shaped Coaster Holder with the coasters shaped as meat.
As well as a Coffee Creamer pitcher shaped like a butterfly.

  • Yes please guys, I would really like to have a physical memento.  And I don't think I'mma have time to make a plushie cubimal before the world ends.

  • yes please.

a tshirt, a mug...i love love LOVE the postcard idea..."suitable for framing!"

(it would be epic if there was a flickr/glitch partnering wherein we could easily transfer all our snaps and order prints too.)
