The New Things Unlocked by The First Test of the Feats System: Quoin Shards and Two New Quoin-Jumping Regions, Hoama and Kloro

Video Demo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hj4xW0pC_4c

To jump for a quoin is pretty fun, but if there are other players around you are often either acing someone else out of the quoin — or someone else is snagging it before you got there. Hmpf! We've always thought that all the climbing and leaping would be better as a collaborative activity. So, now it is a collaborative activity.

Here's how it works: whenever you collect a quoin with other people nearby, the quoin "shards" and fragments of it shoot off to the other nearby players.

You, as the initial collector of the quoin get the full value of the quoin (same as you would have before this feature launched, and same as you would today, if there was no one around).

The other players get a percentage of the quoin's base value (ranging from 5% to 50%, depending how close they were) multiplied by their normal quoin multiplier. These fragments do not count towards the daily quoin limit (but the initial quoin collected still does).

So, the bottom line is that the best result for everyone is to try to "keep to the flock" — the closer you are, the more value you get from each quoin. Sometimes you'll hit the quoin yourself and therefore get the most — other times you still get to wet your beak a little, and it doesn't take away from your daily limit. And, it turns out that trying to keep together is a lot of fun — it's been a hard thing to stop testing. (Note that anyone following another player is excluded from quoin-sharding … each player has to be controlling their own selves.)

This is the first iteration of quoin sharding — we intend to build on it quite a bit: adding rewards for hitting the quoins with larger groups, achievements for sharding, mini-games, a new party space and … more.

In addition, there are two new quoin jumping areas called Hoama and Kloro (like the original ones, Balzare & Roobrik, they are out in the Miscellaneous Islands).

Have fun!

    Double Hooray New Lands!

edit: So, a lot of us are having trouble even seeing the Quarazy Quoins in the new lands. Also, lots of the regular quoins are coming up as 0 or 1 value (i've noticed it most with img but some are currant too)

  • I would just like to clarify that the two trampoline comments, while made by actual twins, were not made in the same room, or even the same part of town.

    Great minds, I guess?

  • Every time I read sharding, my mind puts sharting and makes me giggle. I can't wait to shard with others!
Posted 96 days ago by awesome sauce01 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The sharding is awesome for when there is a lot of competition for a single quoin, but if you can get the rewards while AFK, what is going to stop you from finding a huge quoin and perching there most of the day while you are at work or sleeping? I can see this abused very quickly...

  • The more biggified the Quoin the longer the refresh rate seems to be, some of the big ones I've seen must have refresh rates in the hours rather than minutes so - no fruitful camping there I suspect.

  • I know you were cool enough to give us new background options, but could the pretty green of the new area also be an option? That would be just swell.

  • Not only is this [quoin shards], in my opinion, one of the best upgrades since the housing reset and towers, but when I heard the music in the new regions I was thrilled...it reminds me of the snes game "Earthbound"...love it!!

Also, I am going to assume that when I collect a "shard" it's based on my own multiplier, and not that of the person collecting the quoin, right?
Posted 96 days ago by Mogen Subscriber! | Permalink
  • AGreed Mogen, i LOVE the music for the new Haoma area. Tubas rock!!!!
I'm smitten with that piece- and want it for my home street now :D

Uh is that Mandarin, Stoot? For "Are you good"? As in "Ni hao ma?"

    Lol :D

  • cool, but the krazy quoins are hard to see especially with all that bouncing around.  can we make them bigger or bubbly or a different color?
Posted 96 days ago by Cat A. Tonic Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Mogen — thanks! And yes, everything is based on the quoin multipliers of the individual players (what I get is determined by my distance to the player who collected the quoin, the base value of the quoin and my own multiplier).

  • I just sharted a bunch of quoins. It was unpleasant. I need to find a rest room.

  • Another quoin area? Boring IMO...I'd love to see a new area with stuff to do beside jump for quoins... Sorry to be the only complainer here apparently.

  • Orchi Da Pea: we are going to leave AFK players out of the equation soon (so, if you are AFK, you won't get any shard action). It already works like this for followers.

  • Interesting test that San Serif has been conducting  in the Drop in llmenskie- Getting as many glitchen to jump after the leader to pick up the whole row of quoins. It's fun and seems to be very lucrative too :D We've tested this a few times now. and all in range get it. Just thought, it might be an interesting experiment to note. Thanks San for organizing it. *hugs* :D

Oops I jumped the gun in that one: Here's the gal herself :

  • Hmm...

I liked the concept of Feating a lot (maybe it would have been even better if there was a bonus for being in the same location with other players?), but...

...this sharding thing is leaving me very cold. I mean, I find it a bit incoherent, especially the part about bonuses for sharding together. This is something I had noticed already with other parts of the game, in example with the house party/following badges... Isn't this forced socialization somewhat weird, especially when most of the rest of the game (eg. home streets) actually took away from the social part/meeting people around part of the experience?

You could see this as a sort of balancement, yet... Oh well, maybe I'm just an old angry man after all. We'll see...

Great music in the new areas, though!
(and a strange zoom level at "full out", where you can't read the signs anymore)

Forced socialization, where? On badges you don't have to get if you don't like? (Lets complain about forced grinding to ever get the dying and tree clearing badges too then.)
