Facts about Unlearning

I'm unlearning now.  I feel refreshed!

There are some facts posted about Unlearning, but here are some more I've learned myself:

- You invoke it from your skills page.  There's a link under the rock.  I didn't find a way to use it from within the game.

 - The time it takes to unlearn a skill is NOT subject to the 3% cumulative penalty nor (I think) the Better Learning bonuses.  For example, unlearning Bureaucratic Arts will take 10 minutes.  Among other things, this means the order in which you unlearn skills doesn't affect the overall time it will take.

- You can't use favor to speed up unlearning.  It takes how long it takes.

- You can't unlearn a skill you haven't finished learning yet.  I interrupted learning Teleportation V to learn Unlearning, and someone told me (I haven't verified) that even partially learned skills incur a 3% penalty on learning.  If that's true, then if you started something you don't want to finish, you're getting the penalty and you can't use Unlearning to get rid of it.  (I don't want to lose my progress, but I was curious whether it was even an option.)

- You can unlearn Unlearning.

- There is a regress bar, which is awesome.  You guys rock.  :)

  • Very helpful--thanks, spindle!  Not being subject to the 3% compounded time penalty is huge.

  • Note that, in another thread (http://www.glitch.com/forum/general/13007/132741/), [staff] Blanky stated " the various unlearning skills do add to the overall learning penalty." Thus there is still a cumulative penalty from unlearning

  • Tragus, I think that just means there's a learning penalty for knowing the unlearning skills, just like there is for any skill.  I don't think it's related to the actual unlearning process in any way.

Also, here's me unlearning unlearning.  :)

  • I so don't understand what unlearning is and what it does. So I get unlearning, and can unlearning mining V in 7 days? What's the use? Sorry to be dense about this, but O really don't get it. like at all. I need more and, perhaps smallere, words.

  • I suppose people want to "unlearn" skills they don't use so they can learn other skills faster. Not my cup of tea, but if it works for them, more power to 'em!

  • I haven't calculated yet, but I think unlearning may be useful if you unlearn skills such as BA 1 and BA 2 and the four transforming skills (Bubble, Spice, Vapor, Fruit) before learning the really hard to learn skills such as Transport V or Mining V.  It may save days off learning the V's.
Posted 13 months ago by Pming Subscriber! | Permalink
  • That's right.  It's for speeding up learning.

I spent 4 hours (with donation speedups) to learn Unlearning, 10 minutes to unlearn BA1, an hour to unlearn EZ Cooking II, and 4 hours to unlearn Unlearning I.  So, about nine hours for a net loss of two skills.  That cut my learning penalty by 6.09% for all future skills.  Then I went back to learning Teleporting V, where it had already saved me more than 9 hours.  The time I save on other upcoming skills is pure bonus.

There are other skills I wish I hadn't learned or wish I'd left until later but that aren't worth unlearning because it'd take too long.  (e.g. Soil Appreciation IV hasn't changed my life and wasn't worth the time, but it's not worth unlearning either.)

Unlearning II and III would only be worthwhile if you wanted to unlearn a lot of skills, which you'd probably only do if a large set of new skills came out at once and you were willing to give up lots of skills to learn those faster, or if they change the game mechanics and have some other penalty for knowing too much.  Or if you just wanted to unlearn absolutely everything, one skill at a time, to make some kind of artistic statement.  :)

I probably could have reached Potions II (and perhaps even Knowing All Skills) faster by unlearning a few more minor skills (e.g. Eyeballery, Bubble Tuning) and learning them again later, but I'd be too annoyed to lose skills I use all the time so I didn't bother doing the math.

  • If I unlearn a low-level skill, like Blending I, it doesn't affect the skills after that?

  • Is Mining V supposed to be in after the last update? Because I can't find it in my skills page.

  • I haven't even learned unlearning yet but I look forward to unlearning it.

  • @Spindle, that's my understanding as well. That is, a learned Unlearning level incurs a 3% penalty on subsequent learning of new skills. Unlearning time is independent of number of non-Unlearning skills. ("AFAIK")
Posted 13 months ago by Tragus Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Tsu Dho Nimh, you have to unlearn the skills in reverse order, so if you have Blending II you'll have to unlearn II first before unlearning I.  Sads, huh?  Ii was hoping this wouldn't be the case, but it is...

  • I just wanted to point out that we changed it last night so that Unlearning skills no longer count toward the overall learning penalty.

  • Wait, if you unlearn Bureaucratic Arts I, do you lose your house and your ability to ride the subway?
Posted 13 months ago by Ryllyn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Woohoo - thanks, Etna!  That was my one conflict about learning unlearning - with the penalty for the unlearning skills themselves, I'd have to unlearn more skills or unlearn unlearning itself to make it worthwhile.

Ryllyn, owning a home and riding the subway are based on an achievement that having BA helps with, not on BA itself.  You can get your papers without ever learning BA if someone else deals with the bureacrats for you.

  • @Etna: Good thing we're in Beta.  :-D  Perhaps I'll relearn Unlearning again someday...

Speaking of learning penalty, I got caught on a related bug and lost a few days.  So a warning to all: don't drop what you're doing to learn Unlearning.  :(
Posted 13 months ago by spindle Subscriber! | Permalink
  • To answer someone's question. You do have to unlearn in opposite order. Ie if u have mining 1, 2, 3, u would have to unlearn 3 then 2 then 1 if u wanted to unlearn 1. I totally wanted to unlearn AK1 bc I'm at 6, but I can't.
What I wonder is what happens if I learn a prereq and start the next level, then stop to unlearn the prereq, can I finish the next level since its partially complete. Ie learn BA1, start BA2, pause BA2, unlearn BA1, can I finish learning BA2.

  • Oh cool.  Now, that unlearning doesn't add 3% penalties, I better get them.  XD
Posted 13 months ago by Pming Subscriber! | Permalink
  • you can speed unlearning. I just did.
Posted 12 months ago by Oakland Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @oakland, it looks like you don't have unlearning yet, so i'm assuming you mean you can speed up the learning of unlearning? which is true, but you can't speed up the unlearning of another skill :)

  • This is all well and good, but what if you already know all the other skills?
Would there be any point to learn unlearning then?
    Maybe xp?
    Are there other skills coming?
Posted 12 months ago by EastCutty Subscriber! | Permalink
  • You can speed up unlearning by learning unlearning 2 and 3.  Lol.
Posted 12 months ago by Pming Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Just so you all know, learning Unlearning is still subject to the penalty of 3%.  Just now I started unlearning I, and I noticed my Potionmaking II increased by 3 hours.
Posted 12 months ago by Kirnan Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Please submit bug report.  Staffer Etna (above) said that Unlearning shouldn't increase the penalty.

  • @syntax, I get it. Right, I was speeding up the learning of the skill, not the process which I have't done.

  • Whew!  They fixed it!  Unlearning no longer counts!  I win teh interwebz!!!  (J.K.)

  • Here's another fact about Unlearning. Unlearning Unlearning 1 gets you a badge: Confounder of Logic. Ordinarily I wouldn't point this out, thinking it's more fun for people to figure these sorts of things out on their own. But I just spent more than a week dutifully learning all the Unlearnings, and was down to just two days left on Unlearning 3, only to learn that only unlearning Unlearning 1 gets the achievement badge. So in order to get that badge I have to unlearn the Unlearnings back to zero. I could've saved myself a ton of time by spending a little time right at the beginning learning Unlearning 1 and then unlearning it, getting the badge, and starting again. Figuring this out on my own has NOT left me with the usual appreciation for the good-natured trickery that informs many aspects of this game, and I hope by writing this I can help save some other player from doing this whole process in the completely stupid way I have ended up doing it.

Edited to add: Here's the short version. If you are interested in learning the Unlearning skills AND are interested in getting all the badges it's possible for non-beta, non-intern players to get, then don't move up the Unlearning tree before taking the time to learn, then unlearn, the first level of Unlearning.

Also, as cranky as I am about it all, it does crack me up to talk in circles like this.

  • @Sirentist: Yeah, I just found out about this myself and am in the same boat as you.  However, I look at it as a silver lining in a cloud.  As long as TS doesn't come out with any new skills within the time it will take me to do this unlearning-learning two-step, I don't really mind.  I've learned all the skills possible already anyway.  This will allow me to make daily donations to make my relearning go faster without accruing useless emblems (I've got a complete icon+emblem set).  The daily donations will mean extra XP which will help me on my final push to 60.

  • @Warrender, you are much further along in the good attitude thing than I am. I'm still stuck in the phase where I feel like this is a dirty rotten trick.

Edited for sulkiness: I do like the little surprises Glitch offers. This surprise was just my first super unpleasant one. I guess I'm done sulking about it now. MOSTLY.

  • So there is no point to learn unlearning when you a have learnt all skills but unlearning?
Posted 12 months ago by Bakasora Subscriber! | Permalink
  • (facepalm about the badge)

I'm just gonna add this revelation to my list of personal reasons on why I should not take this game seriously.
Posted 12 months ago by Pming Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I don't see the badge on the achievement list.  This is a hidden badge?
Posted 12 months ago by Pming Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Aw, MAN.  I didn't know about the badge and have 1.5 days left on Unlearning III now.  I'm kind of miffed about it too.  Couldn't the badge at least be for unlearning any unlearning skill and not just level 1?  It would still kind of suck to undo all that time on it, but at least it wouldn't have to be all three levels worth. :/

  • I didn't learn UL3.  I did use UL to unlearn a bunch of skills like botany (I can buy beans) and jellisac hands (I don't persue those) and simiars.   I just started unlearning UL2 and it'll take 4 hours.

  • Un-facts about unlearning:

    - It comes in 3 flavors (cool berry, choco-rock-o, and vanilla)
    - Unlearning was invented by Abraham Lincoln on a train to Groddle Forest Junction
    - If you unlearn too many skills you will begin to sneeze owls
