Realty: No inexpensive housing for New Players? Reconsider "Crappy Housing"?

I was checking the "Realty" section and found that $1000 Currant housing does not appear available. There used to be one room apartment housing.
The least expensive home I found were, 3,500 currants and these are in, Jethimadh, Ur, Chakra Phool Ur, Kalavana Ur. These are lovely but mostly wooded and dark areas. Still I could not find temporary housing for less. Temporary "starter" places are needed.
Perhaps those "cardboard" houses might be reconsidered, as previously discussed under "Crappy Houses".
I see too many new players sleeping in front of entrances, in front of Shrines and other areas that can be troublesome to other players.

Are there some inexpensive housing I just haven't discovered? Maybe I am out of the loop here!
I have been misguiding new players saying there are apartments for $1000 currants.
What do you say?

  • I could go for a cardboard box house that you keep in your inventory, you couldn't keep animals or plant crops, but at least you would have a place to get away from all the hustle and bustle of the world.  Maybe you could even start some Hoovervilles in glitch, or would they be Humbabavilles?

The 1k apartments went through a bit of a price hike and are now 1500 currants to buy, but it appears that all of these apartments are currently sold out.  Looking through the realty pages, it looks like there's been a lot of demand in just about all areas for all styles of housing, so we might need to wait for more housing blocks to be added to the game at large.

  • I'm sure they will make more.  In truth, it's not too hard to get 3500-4000 currants for a cave, swamp house, or tree house.

  • just watch the realty page more often. as people upgrade, single apartments are available all the time. that's how I found a nice house with three tree spots in groddle forest a few days ago, well after the whole block had been sold out [for only 4g, too]

  • I would just like to add that sleeping in a doorway in Ur is really not the equivalent of doing the same IRL.  People sleeping in public areas in Glitch are not doing so because they have no where else to go--they are doing it because somebody, somewhere in another universe needed a coffee refill, had their boss walk into their office, desperately needed a bathroom break, or had to get a bowl of mac 'n cheese in front of the kid(s).

You don't *have* to own a house in Glitch in order to thrive, just sayin'.

I held off until Level 20 and 50K. Admittedly, there were times I debated settling for a less-expensive home, and I had more than a few days where it seemed I'd never get there.

@Corpsicle: I like the 'insta-house' idea, but then you'll have cardboard boxes all over the place (Occupy Gregarious Grange!) ... and it won't keep you from going AFK/dying.

  • Thank you everyone so many differently perspectives on this and @ Nanookie; true RL happens! LOL I tend to forget, haha! is there is another life other than Glitch? LOL
However, seriously @ Corpsicle's idea of pull out place to sleep is a good idea! Perhaps with Zones where they may be used and they dissolve after time giving incentive to buy a home?  I wonder if players would use these? Maybe we wouldn't see so many Tombstone's. Just a thought.

  • More low housing? Psh. We need higher housing.

I'm sitting on a 15k cottage that in my opinion is better than the 50k moderns. +1 patch > +10 plots imo.
    We need 75k houses.

......Of course, there are those of us who like leaving tombstones behind.  I typically left ~11-15 behind every Glitch day.  Granted most of them were at home where people wouldn't be subjected to mass graves a la me, but every now and then, I'd be 'out there' instead.  There's nothing wrong with dropping dead once or twice (or 12 times a day).  :P

  • I saw a post on another thread that suggested being a squatter in the model homes in Alakol.. haha.. clever glitches.   There's an option.  :)

  • "We need 75k houses."

I don't know..I would be happy with that 10k house in Shimla I used to have if the rooms all did something, had a function besides being a place to run my Glitch through.  I just think existing housing could be more functional is all.

  • I kinda wish we could make improvements to the homes.  The garden gnome is cute, but I'd spend 10,000c on a second shelving unit or an extra patch.  Or, when in a meadow home, I would've happily spent a large amount on an animal pen.

  • That stuff is coming, Undercover Nun. According to stoot, "don't expect it before 2012 and you won't be disappointed!" Or something close to that. He also said that customizable housing is the biggest and most important thing they're working on right now. I'll try to find the thread link/quote again later.

    Edit:

    stoot's statement about housing customization:

"This is the most important (and largest) feature we are adding to the game. We originally planned to have it in during beta, but it is very complex! (Whole new UIs, hundreds of items, wallpapers, decorations, new kinds of projects for upgrades, different flexible house "frames" which can be extended in different ways ... all do-able, just a lot of work to get right.) Don't expect it before 2012 and you will not be disappointed!"

  • What's with the sleeping in the streets? When we log off, don't our glitches disappear?
Posted 14 months ago by Widdershins Subscriber! | Permalink
  • They do disappear.

  • I think we need cardboard boxes and shopping carts.  Both of them act as a shelving unit that can hold special "garbage bags" but not generic or big bags, nor the other specialty bags.  Anyone has access to your cardboard box when you aren't in it, so your stuff might disappear.  Shopping carts move with you (no risk of theft), but slow your movement rate down by 50% and cause you to spew randomly generated nonsense into general chat.

In fact, owning either a shopping cart or cardboard box should do the random chat thing.

  • Players under level 15 and first time home buyers can take advantage of the Sandbox group's Leg Up Negative Interest Microloan program.

  • Sleeping in the street happens when you step away from the computer but don't log off. Eventually, you will die in-game from energy loss, but that takes a while at higher levels. It's the character showing that the person is AFK at the moment.

  • Bortola has good sensible housing, most of it between 5k and 15k. A home is helpful to anyone since with the right skills, you can live off what you grow/make.
