What are the comparable advantages?

Those of us with bog homes have a very hard time completing the gardening and tree related quests. There should be some kind of counterbalancing benefits to the bog home, but I'm just not seeing a similar value in herbs and fireflies.

Can anybody show that there's any kind of parity?

  • Grow a lot of herbs in that 50k home, do you?

  • The first key I got was to a bog home so I could (finally) grow herbs and catch fireflies with ease.
I had trouble completing the peat and other bog related quests.

As far as I can see, herbs outsell produce by a huge margin.  People dump produce at prices far less than they can get from vendors.  And at Zilloween, the price of a full jar of fireflies goes through the roof.

I'm not clear on what you think the non-bog homes have access to that makes them overbalanced?

  • windborn, i think your economic arguments for the bog homes are piffle.

herbs DO outsell produce by a large margin, but they take much longer to grow, stack very small, and their harvest yield is low. produce sellers sell so low at auction because we have such a surplus that we make quite enough money underselling crop as to make it not worth taking the time to walk to the vendor.

the price of fireflies DOES go way up at zilleoween, but that's only once every sixty days and most experienced players will no longer be caught by surprise and will have some full jars handy.

it's not that the non-bog homes are better; the home you want is the home you should have.

but i am in very much agreement that the bog homes are disadvantaged in terms of earning power, and i've been asking sporadically since i started playing for herbs and bog-related things to have more punch to them.

i mean, really, you love your bog house and i'm sure it's beautiful, but wouldn't you like to see herbs and barnacles and fireflies have more general uses in the game?

and dug, i buy as many herbs as i need at auction with the huge profit i make from underselling produce. i don't need a lot of herbs, because they're underpowered in the game and not very useful. pretty much anything over a stack of hairball a day and a stack of silvertongue every week or two is more than i need.

i know you'd like to think that the ability to grow herbs outweighs every other benefit, but i just don't see it.

produce can be sold or made into food and drink. res ipsa loquitur.

herbs can be sold or used for their weak buffs. barnacles and jellies have limited crafting use and are readily available in public streets. fireflies, while lovely, have little value past the lighting of pumpkins (no real use after the first five) and the making of crystals (pretty, but not much use either).

what i really think is that giving this basic inequity of utility, we all ought to be asking for the bog home benefits to be expanded; there ought to be more practical uses for the bog items, and herbs ought to be strengthened in the game.

  • I bet when the street projects come back, the prices of fireflies, barnacles and jellisacs will increase, maybe even to the point of being more profitable than veggies on a regular basis. Although the projects will likely be adjusted somehow, if the street trophies are kept, and I imagine they will be, this will be especially true.

  • After I bought my bog home, I immediately got two garden-related quests and despaired over the lack of outdoor plots. Then I discovered the relatively empty gardens in the Alakol model homes and was able to finish my quests with a few visits and my pockets full of guano. I kind of liked that those challenges didn't come easy to me.

I hate cooking so I get more joy out of my herb garden and fireflies.

  • no dug1138, i buy herbs i need (very few, very rare) from the money i make selling meat from my 20 pigs, and tomato grown from my 28 plot garden.
i had a bog house and besides the cozy looks and an egg plant, there's just nothing appealing to it.

  • After you reach a certain point in the game, you often come to discover that you have all the currants you need, and that indeed, all you really need in life is some cozy looks and an egg plant. ;)

  • No, there is no parity to be honest.

Herbal areas are the backwash of Glitch currently. I don't know if it was intentional, but there is a glaring disparity that favors the veg side (and mining, btw) of the equation. Food is obviously, in the end, far more important than herbs, much as I love herbs, so there's a practical reality to the situation, but there is also an obviously weak treatment of the firebog "experience" by TS. Art is great, music is awesome (specially for meditating...idk why... it's just the best), but it seems very much unfinished and underpowered, and that *could easily be remedied by tweaking the harvest values, the effectiveness of some of the herbs, either in time or strength of their action, (rookswort is for me the single most useful of the lot and some like purple are simply fluff), the number of plots, secondary use of herbs in foods and or drinks,  and perhaps by introducing some limited number of veg patches to firebog homes (hopefully something that TS is working on for the home mods update...erm unless home mods are all just the rumor mill at work, that is...).

flask's post was right on the money as far as I'm concerned.

FTR, I own a Groddle Meadows home, so this post isn't based on the shortcomings of my own home.

  • I hope when potion-making skills come to the game (as it was announced), it will depend on herbs. Maybe potions will amplify herbs' buffs, or combine them, or something like that.
