Animals with bad names!

Has anyone else noticed some of the pig and chicken names in Middle Arbor (Groddle Forest)!? Who named these guys? They must be releases because no way would the developers name a pig "annoying f***er". Would they? Someone please fix this. Didn't know we could name are own animals even.

  • You should all be able to recognize when I've named poor nameless piggies.... they're all some variant of Jennyanydots or Stanley. XD

(I really have an unhealthy relationship with my hat, don't I...?)

  • I actually named the chicken in my first backyard Cock just because I thought it was clever and witty (and I've always enjoyed having a Cock to squeeze, har har har), and it was in my backyard so who's gonna really care? And as for my gnome, he's a cheeky bastard best left to his own devices - I've been trying to get him to leave the dark side for eons with no success. ;D

In my opinion, there is a reason why this game isn't open to kids and it's for this sort of thing. Not every single adult in the entire world has a community-minded sensibility when it comes to things like this, and taking offense really is subjective in this context because you have so many people coming from such different backgrounds that some might be offended by something that others find hilariously appropriate - such as, for instance, my naming of a chicken "Cock." I mean, we nibble on pigs, correct? Not to cause disrespect (because I mean none - first thing I could think of to demonstrate my point) but if we had, say, a Muslim or Jew who decided to complain about the lack of variety in meats in the game (because pigs are the only meat source and are considered forbidden foods in both religions), not all of us would be able to personally understand the individual's objection. That individual's offense would be subjective to his or her world-view. The same principle applies for names here - I'm not saying meat and names are the same and I'm not implying any kind of religious slant whatsoever, but the idea of cultural relativity is still something that is pertinent to this situation.

Personally, I don't feel as if the devs should implement any kind of regulation with the names of animals because like many people have pointed out already, we have the ability to confer names for a reason. If you don't like it, change it, and if you find it funny, leave it. How much "wasted energy" does it cost to rename an animal? None. Only two seconds and a modicum of creativity. I haven't seen names that cause me to feel offended, but moreso that I've seen annoying names that have already been mentioned above: **** is the best Glitch ever, Don't let **** into your house, etc.. When I do see those, I change them immediately but most of the time, I don't see the need to police the names because I think that we (as a community) are already doing a good job at it thus far.

  • Just my two currants:
The vulgar/crude names (like "annoying f***er") seem unimaginative and juvenile to me. Some I will change as soon as I have the skill, some I won't bother.
The ones I saw during this past test that I found most disturbing (I think they were chickens) were named "date rape." I'm not sure if that's the height of insensitivity, or a plea from the chickens. If the latter, maybe we need an option to pet the chickens before squeezing them, or give the chickens a chance to peck us (like a real chicken would).

ETA: Whoever named "piggy the musical" -- thanks!! The piggy is happy and well in my back yard.

  • I hate the animals WITHOUT names more because it takes longer to figure out who needs squeezing, petting, nibbling, massaging, milking, or feeding.

I also get annoyed at the animals whose names are in all lowercase letters.

However, I couldn't help but lol when I nibbled "Annoying Fucker."

  • This game is clearly aimed towards adults. It kind of baffles me that anyone would be offended by a chicken named "annoying f***er"... Toilet humor exists, and juvenile as it may be - we all know it's funny. (seriously.) I chuckled out loud when I saw "skank" the chicken. Perhaps that makes me low-brow? I understand the desire to remove names in cases of flat out racism, or EXTREMELY graphic names.... but where do we draw the line? I just wanted to point out that some of us don't really care about chicken names, offensive or not. And sometimes the sheer ridiculousness of a little animated chicken with a super offensive name is, well, funny! To me, anyway.

How is anything on Glitch a matter of social justice? I've seen your threads and I honestly feel like you find social injustices where there aren't any. I have never seen any racism, sexism, or homophobia in this community in the short time I've been here.

If you think a pig named "annoying fucker" is a matter of social injustice (against who-- pigs?) then you really need to relax.

And I'm not trying to be rude or start some sort of massive argument. By all means, correct me if I'm wrong and Glitch is full of bigots.

  • I like naming chickens/ butterflies on my 'Block Street' after the block's residents. I think there's a piggy named KitkatCat running around in 1100 block Pakodi Prim, and a chicken name Essie Kitten. Just 'armless fun.

  • I was on a street where nearly every chicken was named "Annoying Fucker". I changed one to "Annoying Clucker" only because I thought it was funny, I didn't really care enough to change the rest. I personally try to avoid using "bad words" in general (unless heavy things land on my foot, or some similar situation, and then I surprise even myself with what comes out my mouth as I yelp in pain), but I'm not offended by them. I love the witty names, but don't really think twice about the others.

In a game where you're snorting no-no powder and massaging/milking butterflies to get their milky essence, and where the spice plant asks if you give extras after you pet it, it's a little mind boggling that a butterfly with the "F word" in its name is considered naughty. I can't help wondering if "Annoying Fornicator" would be considered a more or less offensive name.

  • My partner in crime had an interesting idea: if a tag is put in so you can see who last named the animal (or not...)--either way, if that info could be coded in, whether we can see it or not, give players the ability to 'like' an animal name if it's particularly clever, and let that translate into a small increase in mood, energy, or experience for the player that named the animal. It could possibly also translate into an achievement tree; e.g., if 3 people liked your animal name, 11 people, etc. It would set up a positive reinforcement for interesting or clever names. To eliminate vote-flooding, each player can only 'like' a name once. Just our thinkings...

  • Question: Wasn't "annoying f***er" a chicken in Chauro? and there was so many chickens that none of us were able to properly work a project for new streets because of the chicken over crowding?  Personally I could care less what the animals are called..but if my kids are sitting next to me and watching me play and reading then yes I will change the names. "Why" you might ask.."Because I want my kids to understand that even though some "adults" can make mistakes ,other adults are willing to help fix those mistakes..
And to give a heads up..Even tho' the age group is 13+ ..Parents might find it funny if it was just them but when it is   your 13 year old  reading and writing and it becomes offensive( and totally inappropriate)  the 13+(child) is no longer allowed on the site.Whats good for the parent is not for the child..and I will try my best to not have my children exposed to filth in a "GAME".
Posted 16 months ago by Gable875 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • If you encourage your children to participate in fun activities that are designed and clearly identified as "adult", then they are going to see adult material.  There is no "mistake" when adults name animals with prurient names.

The best way not to have your children exposed to filth in an "ADULT GAME" is not to let them play adult games with you.
Posted 16 months ago by WindBorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • From the Terms of Service: "If you are under 14 years of age, you are not authorized to use the Service, with or without registering. If you are between the ages of 14 and 17, you represent that your legal guardian has reviewed and agreed to these Terms."

If you can get to age fourteen without hearing a curse word or seeing something inappropriate, kudos to you, your family, and your entire community.  Unfortunately, if you're on the Internet, this is an extremely unlikely scenario.  If you don't like a name, change it and move along.
Posted 16 months ago by glum pudding Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yes, I work in childcare and tend to steer the kids to outdoor activities, then they aren't exposed to anything that would be inappropriate on tv, internet, etc.

I don't understand the problem here.  If you see a name that offends you, change it.  If you are easily offended, make sure you get the proper skill (Animal Kinship V I believe) so you only have to rely on yourself.  *It is the duty of the one who is being offended to make a change (because they can) and not the job of the community/developers to make sure every single player will never be offended by anything*
Posted 16 months ago by Laurali Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The gist of the problem seems to be that people who are not allowed to be using this service are seeing material that their guardians find offensive.  The guardians are allowing the under-age users to sit next to them and read and view what's going on in the game.  The guardians want the filth they are seeing to be removed.  Kinda like taking their kids to an R-rated movie and writing to the studio about how inappropriate the film was for their kids.

Perhaps, along with removing accounts that are not allowed to be here (accounts of people under the age of 14), TS can also sanction the accounts of people who deliberately flout the rules and then complain.

  • Well I am guilty of renaming a public piggy "pork chop" and a chicken "with roast potatoes". However, I dont think they are classed as offensive as such so hope no one is cross with me :D

Seems to me like a lot of people here have very specific ideas about what Glitch is/should be, who it should be for, etc, and that they're enraged that different people have different specific ideas about that. (And then there's Tiny Speck's opinion about who the game is for and what it should be like.)

Do what you can do to make Glitch how you want it to be for yourself. But don't go around crowing "there oughtta be a law!" just because other people are doing things that suggest they have a different worldview.

  • Sorry to be whatever but that seems to have no relevance to this topic and appears you are just trying to stir up more drama. Also this thread now has nothing to do with the game if that is the path this conversation takes. (Also, being an adult game doesn't mean it has to not be that way... like Shoehorn said everyone has their own opinions)

ETA Maybe not so off topic...I think just the way it was stated and there was no connection to the thread or such.

  • It seems to me the point we are all talking about is that adult site or not, crassness & vulgarity for crassness & vulgarity sake is unwelcome and saying it's an adult site is not an excuse for some of the more vulgar behavior we've seen out in the world (hence why devs have gotten involved when appropriate), whereas intelligent cleverness is always welcome by most everyone, whether its pig naming, gnome speak, or whatever. But the truth is that as we go live, more and more kids WILL get into the game, there is NO way to uphold Tiny Speck's TOS, and they will use their juvenile "humor". Hopefully as adults, we don't have to add to it and the community will work itself out....
Posted 16 months ago by Dagnabbit Rabbit Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It doesn't have to be crass/crude/profane, but, because it is an adult game, designed for adults, it CAN be, at any moment.  If you're allowing children to view R-rated movies, you really can't complain when the movies contain language that's not appropriate for children.

It's an adult game, full of crass and vulgar language from time to time.  It's not a place for children, as you have discovered.  The problem is with you allowing your children to view something you don't approve of, not with the content of this site.

As a parent,it was my job to make sure my kids didn't participate in activities I didn't approve of.  I didn't take them to adult parties or R-rated movies and I didn't as people at the adult parties to tone down the language so my kids could participate.

"Regardless of children looking over my shoulder".  Yep, you're in control there.  Turn off the computer, move the children away from the screen, whatever it takes to keep them from seeing the adult channel.

You've done a great job of stirring the pot, as you set out to do several hours ago.  (anyone who is interested can go to your profile and see how you were "instigating" things).

Perhaps your time could be more usefully spent finding non-adult things to do with those kids, instead of teaching them how to be griefers.

I agree with what you are saying about R rates sites. I think Gable's point, and I am familiar with some of the people & incidents that she has been upset about the past couple days (since experiencing some vulgarity with her children accidentally walking up behind her while she was playing and having to "explain" it to them), and wanting to get it off her chest for awhile now hence why she wants to get involved in this convo even though it is stirring the pot further as are all controversial subjects in this forum, is that this is an adult game. Yes. Absolutely. I don't think that means the site is R rated though, and your comparison isn't equal. If it is an R rated site, TinySpeck needs to get their site rated by the muckity mucks in the internet industry who make those decisions. Her child wanting to see the funny cartoon people is a natural thing that kids do. It looks like a cartoon, not like a normal violent RPG where one would expect just about anything to be said or done. So she was surprised by some of what was said and done this past test that went far beyond naming a pig something clever. Can you see where she is coming from in that aspect? If not, that's fine. We all have our opinions as has been said.

Her kid walked up behind her accidentally when there was joking around in Global Chat that could be seen as vulgarity and she had to explain to her little boy when Cerulean was saying how much he loved dick/fucking, etc. As I offered to her, turn off Global Chat so that doesn't happen again. Jumping into and adding to a controversial convo on the internet rather than turning a blind eye is known as stirring the pot. Absolutely. And I fully encourage her to get it off her chest and be specific if it bothered her, although get to the point already! Let's be specific if we are jumping into this topic and stirring further controversy. No reason to call it talking about naming pigs when she really was upset about vulgarity by adults that crosses the line, although some of the gnome talk and pig naming is close to it as well. Again, if its an R rated site, time to call it what it is.

ETA: Glitch is currently internet rated as "Game", not "Adult". Until the developers get their game rated in a manner that fully expresses their intentions, I think we do need to continue to think about what will become more and more of a controversial subject once the game goes live and kids are here, whether we like it or not.

  • @windborn, perhaps you did not see the over the top discussion in global the other day. [hey kids! turn away now, I am going to get to some words that you might need to ask your moms about and that she doesn't want to explain to you, yet--or ever!] It included lot's of banter about dildos, double dong dildos, and people's preferred placements and other intimate desires.

I saw it and found it to be juvenile and annoying in that some participants were proud (and somewhat surprised) that TS didn't jump in to shut it down. Reminded me of the South Park episode when they said "shit" 162 times in one 30 minute episode. Some people found this to be more than annoying, and it does fit in with the topic on this thread.

I don't think that this thread should be "shut down" as you suggest. Frankly, this is an important discussion--not just about kids but about mores in the game. I see two themes emerging. Theme one is to "ban" or to "police" to get to the acceptable level or we can call it the Justice Potter argument. The other theme is that the game can get to a balance without intervention, and we can call this the Wisdom of Crowds argument. Hands on as little as possible? or hands off?

As an aside, could we please spend less time on investigating people's motives and documenting "gotchas" and stick to the topic? This is another example of an ad hominem attack. B-O-R-I-N-G and intellectually lazy.

And so Windborn do you have children??  How about lets have your six year old (and yes he can read) come up to you and see this great game Mommy is playing and umm Ok maybe I wasn't paying attention to Global chat  oh wait..me being a mature adult could not possibly imagine other adults 'writing" that way..I was playing Glitch..Little kids are more observant to the little things..Oh wait this is an Adult game..so it is classified like Playboy/Girl magazines and needs to be played in dark rooms with the windows shuttered and the doors locked..Goodness knows make sure that door is locked Glitchens because we all know little children will do their best to sneak in...And by stirring the pot you must have missed the post were I stated how I liked how people read only partial post and jump to put their spin on things...which is what you did...and yes by making any replies in these forums "ANYONE" takes the chance of stirring the pot..because noone else's opinion matters but your own.

  • Yes, I've raised 3 children.  And yes, I was the evil parent of the year because all their friends were allowed to go to the latest/greatest R rated movies and they weren't.  It was my responsibility to make sure that what they saw was what I was comfortable with them seeing.  If something was Not Safe For Work, I waited to view it until they weren't around to see it.

You can't have it both ways.  Either you behave in a way that you can comfortably explain to your children or you refrain from that behavior until they aren't around to observe you.

When my kids had questions about what they saw or read, I answered in terms that were appropriate for their maturity level at the time.  Kids see and hear all kinds of smutty things. There's no way to stop them from seeing adult content, but knowing that they will, there's no reason to get upset if they do. If you've done your best, then they'll know how you feel about the material.  And they'll be well aware that other people have a different point of view.

If you don't want your kids to see adult material on Glitch, then keep the channels closed that are likely to contain that material.  If what's being said in Global Chat makes you uncomfortable, shut the window.  There's no necessity for anyone to have Global open while playing.   It's a temporary thing, since staff have said it will disappear when Glitch is launched.  If you want to chat, use your group channels to make sure you're hanging out with people whose behavior won't embarrass you.

You certainly can't expect other people to change their behavior because you have allowed your kids to see a site that they aren't allowed to be on anyway.  If your kids need protecting, you'll have to take on that responsibility yourself.

  • This seems to have spun out from the original topic so we'll probably lock the thread a bit later. In the meantime, a few points:

    1. This is not a game for kids.*

    2. That doesn't mean anyone can just say anything they like in public areas: players are assumed to be able to conduct themselves with some basic and reasonable decorum, tact and consideration for others.

    3. There is no right of expression/free speech in the Glitch.

    4. We'd prefer not to use code to filter language used on the site (with a few exceptions) because we're not smart enough to make the computers smart enough to figure out all the context: It's ok to say "fuck" or "shit", occasionally. But, extensively discussing details of fucking or shitting in a way that any normal person would find inappropriate in a shared/public space will result in players getting silenced or their accounts deleted.

    5. Sometimes people will act inconsiderately or irresponsibly or without tact or decorum and we'll miss it or won't be able to act in time to prevent other people from seeing it. That's unfortunate but it is worth it for the sake of having generally free/open channels of communication, and we will work our butts off to make sure that extreme vulgarity/crassness does not become the standard.

    * Dagnabit Rabbit, I had never heard of the ICRA before you mentioned it, but having Googled it, it sounds like they are out of the ratings business. So I don't think there is any way for us to "get our rating changed" (I don't think you get to rate yourself anyway — no one ever asked us what we should be rated).

  • Now that people are aware that real life people of all makes and models play this game and express themselves they way they want (all of us included), you can make decisions about when you play the game - I would suggest not around the kids.  Or better yet - since you can't stop inappropriate language, use the experience as a teaching moment for your children.  The sooner children learn 'all' about the internet the better.

You can only change your behaviour, language, attitude etc.  You will never change someone else's.
I myself don't always enjoy profanity and sexual innuendos, but than sometimes it makes me laugh.   When I see something I don't like, I ignore it and move on and forget about it.

BTW - In my book 'stirring the pot' = trolling.
