What is the most consumable energy you can store per backpack slot?

For keeping large amounts of easily-made energy reserves (i.e. food) with you, Sammiches would seem like a decent investment. Once you get high enough in Animal Kinship you can make a Sammich (worth 29E) for only ~7 spent energy. A net win of 22E for just a bit of cooking work. However, since Sammiches can only fit 20 in a slot, the net consumable energy for a fully-stocked slot of Sammiches is 580—which is 20 less than if you just filled it up with Meat.

First of all, this seems like a (minor) game balancing flaw, where effort spent in crafts actually reduces the overall value of that which you spent the effort on. One can argue, “but you get Experience from it too, which you aren't counting here” but two counter-points to that: 1) you’re also consuming 5 grains per Sammich, which if consumed raw equal 5 energy, and 2) Experience should be a bonus gain that you get for performing actions, rather than merely consuming raw foods. So I’m curious whether this 580/600 Energy disparity is an intentional and conscious decision by Tiny Speck, or if it is an oversight in game balancing maths.

Now to the titular question: does anyone know what the most efficient energy-per-slot item is? The Sammich is slightly lower than raw Meat, as explained above, but I wonder if anyone knows the item that stores the most consumable energy per backpack slot. Let's hear your thoughts (and do some crowd-sourced maths)!

  • 12 awesome stews times 200XP = 2400 XP in one slot

Might be hard to beat that.  I think awesome stew is the most energy packed food and few foods go over 12 per slot.

  • But the energy cost for making the stew is huge, with all the pick and harvest required.  On the other hand the gruels take much less work, and cost more.

  • I've found Rich Tangine to be the most effective. Easy to cook, not a ton of energy, and a good energy boost. Lemburgers are a close second for me. More energy gain.. haven't calculated the loss though.

  • If the ONLY thing you care about is energy/slot, you've already made a mistake nibbling piggies.  Eggs are much better than meat at 1250/slot and only a handful of foods beat them.

I don't think energy/slot is the right metric to look at game balance though.  Glitch cooking seems balanced around net energy gain for cooking vs. eating raw materials.  If I have 60 each of meat, grain, and allspice, I have 840 energy or currant value.  I can convert those into 3 stacks of sammiches worth 1740 energy/currants.  Cost is 300 energy at my cooking skill level (5 per sammich) for a net gain of 600 energy over eating the grain, meat, and allspice raw.  Sammiches are a pretty low-level food with a fairly small energy gain compared to raw materials too.

Making higher level foods, I can easily gain 40-50 energy (or currants) for each cooked food compared to eating raw materials, and as high as 100 for Meat Tetrazzini or Awesome Stew.

It's about energy gain rather than energy per slot.

Awesome Stew beats everything for energy/slot at 2400 energy stored in a slot

  • You all are missing another point as well, and that is the debuff of being "Stuffed" which happens as you eat too much food.  The mechanic of reaching that state is not based on how much energy you take in overall, but rather how many food items you consume.

In other words, 200 eggs will get you closer to that state of "stuffed" than eating 5 Awesome Stews, which if you note, both sets of food yield 1000 energy.

  • Are you sure about stuffed triggering on any eat action, could it trigger, like the meals achievement, only on something cooked?

  • No-no powder gives near infinite NRG per slot ;)

  •  “but you get Experience from it too, which you aren't counting here” but two counter-points to that...

And a third counterpoint is that XP isn't all it's cracked up to be once you reach a certain point (plus: higher energy well // minus: higher cost for teleporting & tithing).

But, yes, if you're looking for energy/stack then your best bet is Awesome Stew -- 200 energy per stew & 12 per slot (2400). Eggs, by contrast are 5 energy & 250 per slot (1250). It would be easy to whip up a spreadsheet. Handy tip... to find the energy of a food item, just grab the cost on the food's page/popup.

  • Kirnan - has that been confirmed by TS or through experimentation? It sounds good as an explanation but I haven't seen any proof.

  • I haven't gotten around to fixing it myself, but FYI the Energy Increase Efficiency chart linked above is out of date. In general the efficiency has been nerfed since the chart was last updated -- many recipies are giving very small % increases (e.g. 60 energy+mats invested, to get a 69e meal).

I suspect Tiny Speck took the approach of avoiding potential exploits, and that the recipies are due a round of balancing at some point. Otherwise there are a very large number of pointless recipies, which doesn't make a lot of sense from a game design standpoint.

FWIW, one of the more efficient recipies is Secret Sauce, and very simple materials. The stack is only 20*29e = 580 energy, so underwhelming from that standpoint, but with an energy cost of 13 gives a great return.

  • Yes, I am sure it counts from any food category, as I did some testing.  I am not sure, however if all foods trigger it, though I can not imagine why they would not.

  • The Wiki spreadsheet is woefully out of date.   Victoria's is a little better but it has some incorrect cooking costs at higher skill levels.  The energy return calculations are bizarre because they ignore the energy value of simply eating the starting materials and the current cost to buy groceries (it takes energy to get currants), but you can download a personal copy and fix the math.  www.glitch.com/forum/genera...
