Cuckcoos

Lordy I hate Cukcoos! They are the players who lurk, waiting for someone to harvest, and clear the herb plot and then pounce in and plant before anyone has a chance. Then, when confronted tell you that you must have confused this with a private herb garden.  There is one in particular that is terrible. Why can't people just ask if you are going to plant, or may they plant. grrrrrrrrr.

  • I'm not sure why!  But, they might not see themselves as lurking or pouncing, they might have been waiting a while and didn't  want to miss out.

I had to plant in one once and it was a little intimidating, especially since I had read a few posts on the horrors of the community gardens.

I finally asked after lurking for a long time.  I had been scared to ask as I didn't want to cause offense!

No one cared, "no, these crops belong to no one, I'm not waiting" etc.  I asked a couple more times, just in case then harvested the flowers and then immediately replanted what I took.  I typed "thank you" and left.

I think some people might be nervous to ask since there has been so much strife regarding the community gardens.  But, I also like to think the best of others so I'm guessing they didn't mean to swoop in but just didn't want to miss out.  They could have been trying to find an empty plot for days, ya never know.

I do agree though, they could and ought to have asked.  Plus, if they had asked, even if you weren't done, you might have given them the plots.  Never know if you don't ask.

I gave in and sold another house, this one I really was crazy about.  I bought  a nice bog house and haven't looked back.  I almost never eat so I don't miss growing crops, I just buy the occasional crop-related items from auction, like tomatoes for making tangy sauce for making potions.  I don't think I could vagabond around and use the community gardens on a regular basis, I might go bonkers if I did!!!

  • So, I'm not sure if I understand what's going on. Is this a case of, you're frustrated that people jump in to plant right after you harvest a plot, or you've been waiting for someone's crops to finish so you can plant, and someone else jumps in and plants instead?

  • This individual lurks around plots, waiting for the herb to ripen, and for someone else to harvest, then plants before anyone else has a chance. She goes from plot to plot doing this and irritating other gardeners. Usually people ask, and I often will say here is a plot you can have. She doesn't even ask, and doesn't give anyone time to plant.  She is a cukcoo.

  • It is still often difficult to plant in the CGs.  Some people get in and plant every empty patch and then replant right away.  I know, I have given up hope of planting there.  I understand the behavior  but if others are waiting it might be nice to let another plant and then you can maybe come back later.  OTOH, I have seen some pretty frantic actions in the CGs.  Some players are desperate enough to try anything.  I still know of no good solution.  Hopefully these problems will end when the new housing comes.

  • @OP -  What this sounded like to me is- "I wanna plant 400 potatoes in a row, and that person had some nerve..." Try looking at it from the other person's point of view- "I've been waiting here for 45 minutes and this person keeps taking up plots over and over... guess I better jump in when I can or I'm not gonna get to plant." Try cycling out with people every so often so everybody gets a chance (i.e, rather than planting over and over and getting annoyed when somebody else jumps in, trade off)... or get a key from somebody who has crop plots you can use. Otherwise, there's not really an answer other than consideration (on both sides of the fence).
Honestly, this sounds more like some personal beef, rather than a widespread pandemic. Not really something worth putting in the forums- work it out with them. If you can't and feel you have a leg to stand on, put in a Help ticket.

  • I admit it, I am a cuckoo! I go to the herb gardens to plant the seeds I receive in the Ancestral Lands.  When a plot is harvested and cleared, I PLANT SEEDS IN IT. And then I leave them for someone else to harvest!  THE SHAME!!!

  • I'm not sure what the OP's role is in this narrative.  If she is also waiting to plant, then her complaint is that this someone else (having exactly equal opportunity) is somehow always faster at taking plots as they become available.  If she is the harvester, then her accusation is that the "cuckoo" is taking a turn she does not wish to cede, on a plot she wants to continue re-using.  Either way, it's definitely something to be worked out on the spot with the other player/s; a whole forum-ful of villagers with torches isn't going to have any impact on their negotiation.

  • Sorry, OP, but it sounds to me like you're saying "Other people wanted to use those plots too - the nerve!"
Posted 10 months ago by WalruZ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It kind of sounded like that to me, too...
Posted 10 months ago by Shiromisa Kaya Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It did not sound to me like the OP was only trying to replant, but that others who were waiting had no chance for a plot. The OP even says 'Usually people ask, and I often will say here is a plot you can have. She doesn't even ask, and doesn't give anyone time to plant. '.

What it sounds like to me is she is describing one person lurking to plant whenever a plot becomes free-to the point that no one else has a chance to use them when she is there. She is suggesting that this one person is trying to monopolize the plots as they become available. And that this is impacting on others, not just herself.

However, I agree that this is the kind of thing that might be addressed on an individual basis (or in Help?) And I agree with Brib Annie that there are still problem with the CGs, which probably won't be solved  until the new housing is available.

  • It's called a public garden for a reason, Jo Jo.
Posted 10 months ago by AwesomeCardinal2000 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yes  I know this is a public garden, and I always ask if the planted beds belong to someone.  Budwaggie has hit it exactly.  . she is standing almost on me or the other player,  waiting until the plot is harvested, and before we have a chance to plant she clears it and plants.  I don't do that to others, and most other players don't either. She doesn't find a public bed and wait, harvest and plant, rather, cukcoo like, pouncing on plots that obviously being tended by others to plant her seeds.  I usually leave the plot empty when I am through and, if there are others in the garden, announce that there is an empty plot. I'm not the only one who has had problem with her  and a few like her. Finally I simply left that garden area and found one where she isn't.

  • She doesn't find a public bed and wait

...but they're all public beds though. Seriously, get a herb house if you want to monopolize the plots you plant.

  • I thought this thread was going to be about cuccos. I was ready to defend someone from a severe pecking. Well, so long as they weren't the one that antagonized the cuccos into organized action. Vicious creatures, those.

I am sorry for your frustration with the actions of the player doing this shadow planting, though I echo sentiments that it may be best taken directly to the player or reported to staff if it is out of control.

  • I don't know why a few players seem to enjoy being jerks, but the problem is much smaller now that herbs stay locked to the planter for a minute after they reach maturity. So yeah, this player is being a jerk - so just go elsewhere or log off.
Posted 10 months ago by Tanga Subscriber! | Permalink
  • 'Being a jerk' in this rather peaceful game almost always involves two parties getting at it in concert.  Neither side is completely wrong and neither side is completely right.

Personally, I find the sweet luvving 'we all need to act sooo sooo cooperatively' aspect of the game saccharine and phoney, so I have no problem in siding with the player who just didn't 'respect' that the other player 'owned' the plots they were standing by.  This isn't Mayberry.  If you want that go watch Andy Griffith reruns.

  • I really don't see what the problem is with planting in empty spots.
Taking other people's herbs when they're waiting for them is wrong. Using the empty plot, is fine.

  • There's a group set up for house swapping - people with herb gardens swapping resources temporarily with people with crop gardens.  Check it out, saves having to camp out beside public herb beds.

The idea of public beds (people take what they need then replant seeds for others) just doesn't work when herb seeds are so expensive.  I understand why people get annoyed, but seriously, they are meant for everyone.
Posted 10 months ago by Ananse Subscriber! | Permalink
  • This is why I no longer use public gardens: People get hacked off when you've been waiting for like half an hour, and they just pop in and see you harvesting it without asking if they wanted it. Also, I dislike having to wait to plant my herbs, then try to guard them as they grow! Just buy a bog-house and be done with it!

  • Another thing, I can maximize my profits by not having to worry about losing my crop to someone else.
Posted 10 months ago by RJStormRider Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I am seriously all in favor of being nice and offering to take turns and all, but if we ask whether a player is planning to replant the same plot after harvesting, we're implying that the "most fair" play is for someone who's already using a plot to keep on using it  - unless they decide that someone else "may plant", having asked nicely - and honestly that isn't so.  Our own plantings are now protected, but once we've harvested, the public bed is open to the public; the beds aren't locked to us for another round of use, and for good reason.  So once you've taken your crop, you simply aren't tending that patch any more, and it no longer "belongs to" you.  And like the key-spawns and everything else, if many people are waiting they may choose to take turns but they are not required to.

I'm still not sure why this player is so much faster than all other players that nobody else (the harvester nor the hopeful waiting crowds) can beat her to a single bed (aside from superharvests, we can replant almost at once), and I can see why it would be frustrating, but she is a member of the community and entitled to plant in any empty plot.
Posted 10 months ago by oscarette Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Should TS make it so that after you harvest the bed is locked to for 60 seconds?  And then what happens when a person simply monopolizes an entire public herb garden for hours?

The public garden plots are first come, first serve.  If two people are standing next to a plot and one of them plants first, neither of them is in the wrong, regardless of who was there first and whether one of the people just finished using the plot.
