We Tested our new experimental renderer for one hour!

UPDATE: Thanks everyone. We ran the test, and got some stats!

Heads up! Until 4:30PM PDT, we're forcing all player level 10 or higher to use our new experimental renderer detailed here: http://www.glitch.com/forum/general/26515/

This will last for about 1 hr, so we can collect some stats. Bug reporting is disabled. Sadly, bugs are still  enabled.

Thanks in advance for your willingness to help!

If the new renderer fails for you, please use this url to bypass the test: http://www.glitch.com/game/?SWF_which=DEBUG

  • Well, I could pick my tower up  http://www.flickr.com/photos/upyerbum/7977934754

I can pick EVERYTHING up, and not do anything else.

    Is this Katamari Glitch?

  • Watered my whole garden twice and the plants still need watering...After reloading the page, the plants are now well watered. :)
My mouse pointer is very "sticky" - I  keep picking things up when I just want to select them.  Reloading helps for this too, but only briefly.
On the other hand, loading my home street, house, etc seems to be faster... not much improvement on laggy movement, though.

  • Gotten white screen when moving SDB or changing wall paper (3x). Can't get inside my house.

  • I see vertical white lines only in my house, between wallpaper panels. Everything seems to be running a bit slower and the blue outlines seem weird.

  • Wandering around Ur as invisiglitch is kind of fun

  • I can't see other players -- just their names -- and I just dug a dirt pile, which promptly vanished.

ETA: I'm gone now too, as is my house.  Wheeeee!

  • When I try to purchase something from a SDB box in someone's tower, when I say purchase it looks like I pick up the whole SDB box rather than purchase what is in it.

I am having the watering issue too.  I water and it looks like I have not, but when I refresh, things have been watered...

  • Using an iMac desktop, everything worked well using Safari. Changing to FF, everything worked at home and street, but the retriculating splines froze at 100% when I tried to teleport "back to world".

edit: Using Safari----Flipside very laggy. Also, ladders and music missing. GM seemed okay.

  • Everything is running fast and it was only a little buggy until I went to my tower. I tried to collect some currents from an SDB, but I must have moved it and the screen got all smooshed. When I refreshed the page, the SDB was gone (along with the currents). Still not sure where that SDB went...

@Edit: I just lost another one when I tried to move it!
@Edit again: Got em back after the reload (7 floors away!).

  • Returned to the world in Kloro, was able to load 2 streets normally - both were streets I had visited before.
The third street never loaded - reticluated splines :) up to 100% then stuck, same after reload.  This was a street I hadn't visited before.

  • I'm trying to load le miserable and I'm stuck at 100 percent reticulated splines. I've reloaded 2 times.

Edit: Glitch just reloaded itself and I have a little red circle in the top left saying the reload is coming and le miserable is working now.

  • I tried to place few things in Decorate mode.. big mistake!  Everything on screen went melty and it zoomed in really tight.  I reloaded and tried again.  Same result.

Also having problems with pointing to and selecting SDB's to collect currants.  I move over the sdb I want but it won't highlight / react.  It took me several times to finally get it.

  • Okay, I logged in and everything was fine, except when I hit QP and I saw that Iwas rendering in bitmap, either it defaulted to the old render automatically or something.

As a side note, the computer I'm on (ye olde laptop) doesn't have a great graphics card.

  • Seemed to be fine. Using a pretty recent computer, BUT it turned out to be a bit laggier(I don't have a graphics card).

  • I'm having more bugs now we've switched back than I did during the test. My butler's chat window is acting oddly.

  • Yeah, my butler's window is, too. And sez she's offline when she isn't!

  • Test ran smoothly for me, went out n gathered bubbles.  No issues with sdbs, but I knew not to play with inventory much.

Pages would load splines 2x, then pop up...seemed a little zippier but not stunningly faster.

  • main thing I noticed is that the mini map didn't accurately reflect my position in my back yard.

when in my back yard it sometimes showed me inside my house. It seemed to err on the side of showing me further to the right. I have a platform in my back yard and always use the mini-map to tell me when to spinach jump up to it. using this renderer I jumped to what showed the platform above - only to find nothing but air.

  • TS, what specifically did you learn from this little experiment?
Posted 92 days ago by Sturminator IX Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Sturminator, I came here to ask the same thing.

What'd we learn?  Was there valuable data to be had?

  • The most obvious effect for me was as stated previously.  The nice soft blue glow became a harsh blue outline.  I could certainly live with it if rendering is faster and more stable.  If so, perhaps the color could be changed to something less harsh.

I felt that rendering was a bit faster and I had no noticeable problems apart from a Freeze near the end of the test but I discovered that my AV was fighting a worm at the time so I count that as a local problem.  I would need a lengthier test to see if this new rendering would save me from some lag.  I usually have to reload at least once an hour but the longer I play, the more often I seem to need a reload.  That is irritating but I love Glitch so I just reload until I get too laggy or too tired and then I take a break.

BTW, lag seems to have changed lately for me.  Things used to just get a bit slow and freeze or movement became manic and nearly unstoppable as lag kicked in.  Now, my keyboard (particularly the Caps) starts to fail, finally reaching the point where the arrow keys stop working.  That's when I have to reload, like it or not.  BTW, I dump my browser cache before reloading and sometimes dumping it occasionally anyway seems to help.  I use a PC laptop with Win7 and Mozilla FF is my browser.
