Global Chat

Last night stoot was talking about how there will be no Global Chat when the game opens, and I thought this was sad, cause I like talking to all of you.  We should come up with ways to keep Global Chat around so we can all still converse.  Post all your thoughts so we don't all lose touch with each other when the game opens!

  • Groups. Join a group of people you like to hang with - each group has their own chat.

  • use IRC :)

  • Groups wouldn't be the same though!  I am in a bunch of groups and people aren't typically talking in them, I guess it would be ok but it wouldn't be able to build community with new players like global chat does

    Whats IRC?

  • Make a "Glitch old-timers" group. People could self-select as being an "old-timer". (I started out saying there should be a "Glitch alpha/beta tester" group, but that seemed too cliquish)

  • The loss of Global chat will be sad.

If we have to resort to IRC, perhaps we should set up gopher and wais servers too.

  • Are group chats more apt to become unwieldy/laggy/etc than the Global Chat channel is right now? I guess what I'm wondering is if we were to form a "Global Chat" group encompassing all the players in the game (who wanted to join, anyway) would it slow things down any?

The thing I would find annoying about that, personally, are the notices about who's joined and left chats. A lot of the time I don't keep the New Streets chat channel open for that reason - I'll get tricked into thinking there are 13 new messages when really, five people have joined and seven have left.

  • Global chat was a good way to know new things about the game and sometimes run into interesting conversations. Groups are great but global chat allowed new players to acclimate to the game, and old players to hang around and meet new ones and help them along.

This is one of the few decisions I hope Tiny speck will reconsider. Loss of global chat is loss of one of the nicest features of the game.

  • Can't we just keep it until it turns into a total clusterf!@#$ and then pull the plug on it?

I really like the serendipity of Global Chat; I have met some of my favorite Glitches in there.

  • the global chat should go sooner rather than later, however i think it needs to be replaced by a similarly "global" in game communications forum that scales much better than chat does.

i personally like the twitter "status updates" model but showing the status updates of every single player wouldn't scale even now, and new players without a social network wouldn't benefit from the current social network based update system that we see on the home page.

no clue what this "global information feed" for newcomers might look like but it could be ..

    1. announcements from groups - admins of groups post announcements given priority by group population / activity / interestingness in order to scale the system

    2. let people "fave" updates from their friends - most faved [or some other interestingness system] puts updates into the global feed

    3. locally global - you get all status updates but only from the current area you are in .. so if you are in caverns you get updates from people in the caverns .. if ix, updates from everybody in ix and so on

    4. a "Greeter" based feed for newcomers, replaced by social graph later once they have friends.

personally i like options 3 and 4 best .. or some combination of both.

  • Tally, group chats don't notify any more if someone joins or leaves :) it's new this test and awesome!

  • No spamming via admin announcements.  -1 to this idea
No spamming via any kind of 'interestingness' metric. -1 to this idea.

  • I'm a lurker and will often have global chat open as I wander around even though I'm not talking in it. I'll certainly miss it as I've learnt a lot from the chat of the other players and it makes me wonder whether the experience of new gamers (once the game is fully open), will be diminished by this.

  • @stri: interesting idea, but I really like being able to ask questions/chat with people instantly conversation style.  I was thinking maybe there could me "main streets" being on that street would tune you into global chat or something, idk.

I also think having the global chat is what creates the atmosphere for the game.  When I first started playing, the first thing I did was pop into global chat and it really sets the atmosphere for the game and creates a strong community feeling.  I don't want to see it go!

  • Heh, Laurali - I didn't learn about Global chat for rather a while... I just didn't fuss with the right hand menu because I didn't know what it was.

  • Maybe a ham radio skill? As you go up in level, you can access a wider and wider range of chat, if you so choose. You have to turn it on intentionally, though, and choose how wide a range you want to "hear."

I also like the idea of a "region chat," although the Ix chat would most often be ridiculously slow.

As for the Main or Cross Streets as a hub for chat, wouldn't that cause lag as well? A bunch of glitchlings gathered in the same street, huddled 'round the Olde Tyme Radio to listen to their friends.

  • Wow Jenny thats a really cool idea.  There could be a "starter channel" thats similar to live help for people who need it or something like that!  COol idea!

  • Yeah I'll miss global chat also...but not the hours of arguments that broke out this afternoon...I'm sure they'll come up with something we can't work without...

  • Global chat shouldn't go away. If it does people will recreate it by joining the same group as everyone else, or I guess we will just have to use something outside the game like ventrillo or IRC...

  • I'd almost rather use something outside of Glitch and let the devs worry about the awesomeness of the game rather than how they're gonna manage having eleventeen bajillion glitchlings in a single chat at once. T'would be lovely to have an in-game compromise, but I'm sure we could figure out a way to be social on someone else's line if we gotta.

  • When Glitch goes live... Global Chat would likely be a terrible place to do any actual chatting. I have been in chatrooms with hundreds and even thousands of people in them. I honestly don't know how anyone could have read any of it, let alone get a word in edgewise. I am all for the area chat idea, though... and a starter chat.

  • But for new players it is not beneficial to have an outside source to chat on.  Think about how many new players come into global chat not just to ask questions but to get a sense of community and that will be taken away with global chat.  It won't be very welcoming to come into a game where you don't know anyone and have no way of meeting people

  • Maybe as the player group gets larger, we would have region chat instead.
