Gardening Changes Feedback Thread (reasonable or not?)

I figured I'd get a thread started for some different points of view. The details of the changes are in beta.glitch.com/forum/gener... , but basically stuff takes longer to grow. Considerably longer. What once took 30 minutes, now takes 5 hours. Potatoes now take a full real-life day.

First, let me state that I'm somewhat relieved that I won't have to be harvesting a crop every couple of hours. I was simply incapable of allowing my plots to be inactive for any period of time, and could usually be found tending to my crops . . . shirtless . . .to avoid the unsightly 'farmer's tan'.

That said, these changes seem to have taken away a nice profit stream and/or energy source. I will admit that gardening seemed to be a bit unbalanced, but does this swing things too far in the other direction? The guano part is nice, but it has been such a scarce resource that I'm not sure how feasible that approach will be. Do I have to return to the mines, or will that become less worthwhile too?

As you can see, I'm a bit conflicted on this. So, I turn to you for your feedback and sound reasoning (as evidenced by countless other threads ;). I haven't crunched any numbers, but feel free to share any that you might have.

Is this a good/fair change? Is guano more plentiful now and thus a feasible way to increase yields? What is the most worthwhile profession now? Does anyone want to buy any suntan lotion or a gently used straw hat?

  • well, it's certainly changed things for me.

My little 8-plot garden in the heights used to provide enough food for me (mostly cabbages) to free up my time so I could go about and do other things like hide surprises, leave gifts for people, work on projects, quests, etc.
When my food inventory would get low I'd pop home and harvest, clean-up and re-seed.

Today for the first time ever I totally ran out of food and energy.
I started buying food from auctions and vendors, stopped working on projects for a bit, which tend to be energy-intensive.

If the new change means I'll have to rely on a currants -based economy more, then that's not so good I think.
I enjoyed being self-sufficient, my garden produced enough food for me and I rarely sold much produce. If growing food for your own consumption is going to become more time-consuming (what with chasing batterflies) this will make people have to choose a specialisation, like mining or whatever, to make money, while others concentrate on gardening and bat harassing.

    I don't think that's ideal.

  • one more problem:
the garden tending menu doesn't allow me to not fertilise my seedlings.

So, for example, if I come back and find some of my plots dry I can't 'water only' without adding guano. The 'fertilise' option comes first in the sequence and I can't skip past it.
(presumably this only happens if one has guano in their inventory)

  • I don't agree that the quest should only be offered to people who have gardens at home -- it's up to the individual if they want to attempt a particular quest.  I'd much much rather make that decision myself than have it made for me.

  • @stoot -- Thank you for the quick reply. I'm still trying to get it done now but it makes me a little bit loopy to plant and get nothing in the end.

Ah well. I can be a planter for other people's benefit. :D

  • Wrendolin, re "the garden tending menu doesn't allow me to not fertilise my seedlings" — that was fixed a while ago, but you'd have to reload before it will work right for you.

And, as for self-sufficiency from gardening: we're not done adjusting and have some other speed-up mechanics planned for the future (along with bots that can harvest, store and replant for you — but that will take longer). In the meantime, assuming there are some times during which you are not playing (e.g., when sleeping, working, etc.) you could always plant long-to-grow things before signing off for the night and only grow quick stuff while actively playing.

  • Knowing the correct amount to feed the batterflies doesn't help when you cant choose to feed the number required. I spent/ wasted far too long in the caves yesterday to collect some guano to ever be bothered again. If I was able to choose '2' items to feed the batterflies in one go, but no its either 1 or 10...

I have a big garden, I'll just plant and wait....as for herbs? I sure wont be bothering with the community herb gardens.

  • wrendolin, we all get free Cock Energy* each day, so if you budget that you should be able to hide stuff and give stuff away. you'd be able to participate in projects too, though obviously not as much.

if that daily boost does not supply enough energy for you to have fun, and gardening to get the energy reduces your fun level, it is true that you're kinda pooched.

*in the spirit of Projects now being referred to as Jobs, i've decided to call the daily energy refill Cock Energy instead of Rooster Energy

  • Now I am cranky!!

@Stoot "In the meantime, assuming there are some times during which you are not playing (e.g., when sleeping, working, etc.) you could always plant long-to-grow things before signing off for the night and only grow quick stuff while actively playing"

I did exactly that last night - 10 hours ago... when I've now logged in all I have is wilted seedlings! I watered when I planted, and I just watered now and they have barely grown! Still have many, hours to go - Not Happy!

ETA: My zucchini - show that they are dry with approx 2/3 growth, but as soon as I water them they revert back to first planted stage :(

EDA: Now 15 minutes later, my tomatoes have gone from tiny seedlings with minimum growth to magically being ready to harvest!

  • "Knowing the correct amount to feed the batterflies doesn't help when you cant choose to feed the number required."

that's why you also need to know WHAT to feed them.

for example, 10 meats per 3 guano [max] .. will always be available on the menu. you need to pick foods that generate 3 guanos when used in increments of ten.. or at least until the feeding UI is improved.

Edit - i think stoot's advice assumes that you will somehow be able to keep the plot wet all night, as this does not currently seem to be possible. the bot he mentions might solve that, tho unfortunately for you they do not exist yet.
Posted 17 months ago by striatic Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @striatic - why should I have to feed 10 meats for 3 guano, when 2 meats give one guano??
Posted 17 months ago by Teena Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @stoot- sure, that works. At the start of each session I'll have 8 plots waiting to be harvested.
But it means the lack of food is now the main slowing mechanism that will limit what i do when I am in game.

Which is okay, I guess, if that's by design. Something has to slow down consumption.
I guess I'm saying that before this gardening change, self sufficiency (even with a small garden) while in-game was relatively easy and I didn't have to concern myself much with currants.
    And now I do.

@stri- Cock Energy it shall henceforth be.

  • Mmmm. My take on the situation which I assume no one will care about:

I have always been operating under the impression that much of the game was going to be nerf'ed/whatever before launch. Up to now the game as felt geared (in some ways) to enhancing continuous game play over short periods of times. Say, two to four days every week or two. Everything has felt sped up. At least sped up to what I would imagine for a world that plans to be up 24/7.

To me it's not about "slowing don't game play" but making the world feel more immersive and living... and not just a grinding factory. Yes. I think longer grow times makes it less like grinding. Because it encourages you to either (1) go do something in the real world or (2) go off into the rest of Glitch and discover other stuff while you wait.

  • @Wrendolin, having plots ready to harvest, or close to it was what I expected when I logged on in my morning, but far from it. Sure hope that gets fixed soon.

EDA: even tho my seedlings showed minimum green, they just magically became ripe, ready to harvest!

  • My verdict is now official: the fun factor of Glitch suffered a significant setback with this new behavior.  It is now 67% less fun, to be precise.

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all poop are created equal"
Please make piggy plop another form of fertilizer.  Make it more costly to produce a plop if you must, but please do it . . . "soon" or "very soon" (to beat a long dead horse).

  • I've never mined, so I can't comment on how they compare.. So all I can relate is from what was before to what is now.

Last test I could buy 28 of each kind of seed.   Spend the first few hours getting a bunch of each crop, doing some other cleanup and errands, and be ready for projects.   Since projects are a bit of a gamble on what materials are needed, I tried to bring as many basic ingredients with me so I'll be prepared to cook whatever they throw my way.

This test I've managed to grow about 2-3 of the 15 or so crops, after ramping up my meat production, so I can feed the bats and collect guano, and then do the actual planting.   Considering I only have a few more "real time" hours to play, it's unlikely I'll be able to participate in any street building projects at all.

  • @ wrendolin - i'm experiencing the same thing.  @everyone else has a point i agree with also, @striatic has several.

after working hard for months, i was finally exploring the game outside of the grind, the new changes threw me right back in but forgot the fun. the changes are too extreme and the bat thing is definitely not working for me yet. the community cool we all shared at the herb gardens is gone, so sad. where is my fun? what am i aspiring to? so what if we all make money, have houses, grow stuff fast, use the auctions and have a great time as we have been so far. why not? i don't get it.

exploring new territories has been cool, the free range sand box play has been entertaining and learning/questing has been a great way to grow as a glitch within the game system. but why only give me great landscape, cool housing and the grinds?  -  the potential here is enormous but only if somebody understands what i want to do here. yes, the devs made this world (thank you) but i have to want to be here. i want more fun things similar to a zelda ocarina of time type mini games - store fronts (or locked doors) that lead to gnome bowling for example, or fishing, or digging for fossils, mario sunshine type mini games and riven/myst style puzzles.

i hesitate to name other games and have avoided using any other game as comparison but why stop there? let me buy movies at my house and invite friends over to watch. why not have my mail box be my email box too? instead of craigslist give me stootslist.com. make a community building available for classes or seminars. let us video chat with each other from home. etc. etc. etc. we love the social potential of this game. i think the end of game parties are a perfect example of how much fun can be had when the players get together. we need more things to support that - festivals, races, group ice skating in the wintery place or the cool hippie music friday night concert (IxÆoN's idea).  the changes i have been experiencing have been more ways to grind away my time without giving me more fun in return.

  • @coolbettycakes .. one interesting thing about this change is that it has been framed as "how it was supposed to be all along".

what i don't understand is why things should go "back", for lack of a better word, to that conceptual past.

we've heard that the game's backstory has been revised many times, and that the game is in a constant state of flux, which is why it seems so odd to zap this particular aspect of the game back to the original conception when people were having a ton of fun with the way it "Wasn't Supposed To Work" ..

i mean, what is more important? people having fun now, or adhering to some previously neglected plan that may, in fact, be much less fun than how things ended up turning out?

maybe the thinking was "collecting bat poop is hilarious! how could that possibly not make gardening more fun?" or maybe it was "the miners and the farmers should be interacting more, currently the two activities operate too much in parallel, not together."

in the first case, the devs may have underestimated the ongoing hilarity of poop relative to the tedium in obtaining it.

in the second case, the assumption should not be made that merely having some level of interaction between activities and player types is fun, or provides a groundwork for fun. more attention needs to be paid to the specific type of interaction. is this actually causing interaction? is it high quality interaction? is it fun? is it merely interaction for interaction's sake? etc.

  • I apologize for not reading through all the posts.  Yes, I was shocked at the extremely long grow times for the gardens now...and if your stuff dries out, then it stops growing. Seems I watered right before going offline last night, and when I came back on, most of my stuff was wilted/dried out, and was not advancing.  One major help would be to have waterings last for longer.

I myself don't mind things taking a bit longer than they did previously, but what I really don't care for (with anything in game) is for the time to be told to me in RL time...and frankly, I think extending something to one or two game time days (4-8 RL hours) is probably acceptable but more than 1 RL day seems a bit much to me. I feel bad for those that really enjoy the gardening aspect of the game.

I barely garden much anymore because it was just too labor intensive before they implemented the time changes, so I predominately purchase my produce since I'm at a point of having plenty of currants.  I think this change really confirms for me, that I don't even want to bother with garden plots in my back yard, give me all trees instead...

  • @Stoot - Yes, my garden was dry.  I planted yesterday evening and watered it.  When I woke up today, they were dry and still seeds overnight.  I watered and then found out about guano so went out and got some and fertilized.  Late this afternoon, went back in and my plots were again dry and the potatoes were not yet done.  I put another layer of guano on them and watered.  Finally the next time I came into the game they were done...  If they stop growing when they dry up, perhaps the watering should last longer.

  • This change is frustrating because I have to
    a) spend more time away from my garden gathering guano
    and
    b) spend more time at my house tending my garden.

A garden that will not grow without being tended so frequently that you cannot even sleep IRL is not very well thought out.

  • To update slightly, when I made my post earlier about bats in Alakol, I was feeding bats in Simean Dims and collecting guano. Welp, as of right now, Simean Dims no longer has bats. So it's the caves or bust, I guess. Sigh.

I'm reminded of the saying about the best way to take off a BandAid. The answer is not slowly :)

So in the interest of getting it over with as fast as possible, I might as well point out another strange thing, knowing that it will sadly go the way of Alakol bats :(

Potato takes 1 day base time to grow. Each potato gives 7 energy.
Spinach takes 1 hour base time to grow. Each spinach gives 3 energy.

What am I missing? Please say this was in the original design spec so that I can at least enjoy spinach. I'd possibly even change my name to Popeye
Posted 17 months ago by Joe Blow Subscriber! | Permalink
  • ok, I have to put my two currant in.

I really think the devs should rethink this new gardening thing.  I really doubt I will be gardening any more now that it is so hard and time consuming for things to grow. Honestly I will not bother with the bots that can harvest, store and replant because that is not what gardening is about. [I get this note that pops up when I am trying to fly through with harvesting, hoeing and watering. "Slow down! Gardening is a leisure activity".] It is the joy that comes from gardening (being self-sufficient and cooking the crops you grow) as well as the fun from sharing what you grow with others (like with the community gardens as others have mentioned). But all is "new" stuff, like Striatic says, renders the gardens highly inefficient and give miners (again) the upper hand.

I have actually figured out away to get gauno from the Batterflies that doesn't have my head spinning. But really, if you weigh it out, it would be much simpler to use the meat harvested from the pigs to sustain yourself while mining then it would be to chase around batterflies to feed them and then use their poop as fertilizer and still have to deal with the crops dying out and drying out before they are ready to be harvested. I will even ventrue out to say it's cheaper (and now more efficient) to buy crops from the food/produce and groceries vendors.

I really have spent most of my time on Glitch mining. I have made tons of currants mining and have spent tons of currants. I keep my currants around 100k to 150k and when I dip below that amount I go mining, mining is easy. But in between those times I like to go gathering and gardening and exploring and helping people and helping with street projects. This has made gardening really terrible and really no joy at all. And I think most Glitches feel the same.

  • The main thing I liked about gardening was that it was fairly casual.  Especially herb gardening.  You'd drop in, plant some seeds and harvest some herbs and come back an hour or so later and repeat.

Now, you're invested... either the herbs take hours to harvest (and someone needs to water them in the meantime) or you have to give them guano to grown in something resembling a reasonable amount of time. This wouldn't be so bad if guano was available near the herb gardens, but it isn't; it's hell and gone in Uralia and, although we appreciate that the bats sometimes spontaneously crap, you're still spending a good long time feeding those guys food (or planks) so you can get stacks of guano 1-3 craps at a time, which is really grinding and not-casual, negating the very properties that made gardening appealing (to me, at least) in the first place.

  • I haven't had much time to play so far this test and now after reading some of these posts, I'm not sure I even want to bother. One of the things I loved about gardening in Glitch was that the crops didn't die/wither like other games that I've abandoned. I had no idea that this was coming  :(

  • OK! We hear all the feedback and are processing it. Thank you :)

We may make some further changes to gardening in light of the feedback (no promises since we are still thinking through ramifications). But there will be lots of similar tweaking over the next six weeks or so as we start planning for the reset. Some activities will be nerfed and some powered-up. And, we are prepared for the hate every time something gets nerfed — but also prepared to listen carefully to the feedback, watch what people do and adjust accordingly.

(And PittyPat — crops don't wither or die, they just take longer to grow.)

  • @Stoot... good to hear our crops wont die, but my crops were grey and wilted this morning when I logged in, I was shocked & assumed that was withered? Watering revived them, but still had to wait a while for them to ripen.

  • A possible tweak for those of us who play a lot, but have to sleep and work at traditional jobs

It would be nice, when I'm heading out the door to work, or going to bed at night, to be able to water just before I leave the game.Currently, if I water when I plant, the interval before I can water again may be too short.  So my plants that are planted at 9 pm can't be watered again before I leave for work.

I'm not asking for a shorter interval, but a chance to restart the timer.

  • I collected guano last night.  As far as I know, it takes fifteen energy points to create one guano, so I was feeding each bat a meat and then an egg.  It worked, but it was tedious.  Then I realized that it's 30 points to get a crop fertilized, and three crops to get the seeds, so if you do a little math, then:

Spinach: 30 for guano + 9 for seeds = 39 points, and you typically get a harvest of 12 vegetables, and spinach gives 3 points each, which is 36 points.  Net result: -3 energy loss.  Old result: +36 energy gain.

Potato: 30 for guano + 21 for seeds = 51 points, 12 x 7 points each potato = 84 points.  Net result: +33 energy gain.  Old result: +84 energy gain.

This is excluding the potentially-enormous amounts of energy required to teleport to Ilmenskie, to create the food for the bats, and to actually tend/plant/harvest a garden.  (I'm also forgetting about the three-guanos-per-go thing because I don't know exactly how it works.  If fifteen points produces one, then forty-five should produce three?)

Yes, I could ignore guano and just wait longer for my crops, but this is a bad strategy for people like me who spend a lot of time working on produce-intensive street projects.

Also, I think that in this post, it was mentioned that guano use might fail half the time (but I'm not quite sure how to interpret that "50%" remark).  That could explain what's going on with Cabinwood's garden.  We are back to the "we don't know how this SHOULD work, so we don't know if this result is a bug or a feature" dilemma.

Sad as I am to see that gardening is now a complete waste of time and energy, and that I'll just be buying produce from vendors from now on, I almost don't care about all of the above in relation to the super-annoying design of the feeding interface.  Please, before "fixing" anything else, could someone build in a "how many?" dialogue, as well as an "are you sure?" dialogue for people who've accidentally hit "all" or "max" while trying to feed an animal something?  We should ALWAYS have the ability to feed a pig three vegetables, for example, not just when we're holding twenty or fewer of something... and "all" should not be the choice under your mouse when you have just clicked on a food to give the pig.  This very small change could save everyone a lot of grief.  I know that we've been complaining about it for a very long time, and that the staff already knows about it, but it bears repeating because it is a stinky situation which has not improved, and the new need for guano just underlines the problems with the interface.

(For everyone who's about to complain about how negative I am: I love Glitch!  I am a Tiny Speck fan!  I want the game to be EVEN MORE FUN, if that's possible!  Peace, love, and superharvests to you all.)

  • The most efficient way to get guano in terms of time and energy is to use planks. 10 planks gets two guano, so a stack of planks translates into 50 guano. Since planks magically spawn out of nowhere in many, many places, it's not like there's a shortage of planks.

As for guano use, I've never had a failure with guano as long as I used it immediately after I plant the seed.  Use it once and the seeds turn into a sprout.  Use it again and 90% of the remaining progress is filled.

So what happens if you plant a seed, let it grow into a sprout without guano and then apply guano?  Well, I don't know if this is intended, but it looks like 50% of the remaining time is cut off.

i think this is all part of a kind of too clever by half idea to create a more interactive economic ecosystem.

so if you garden, you basically HAVE to deal with miners via auction to get your guano, and then you ALSO have to deal with chefs in order to get your produce energy yield boosted to something useful.

OR you have to pick up mining or cooking or both, which is difficult to do via the new skill system.

of course it seems to be falling flat on its face, and i wonder if the kinds of interactions they are looking to spur are really fun for anyone except for the developers, who get to watch their conspicuously clever master plan come together from 10,000 feet. or not : ] .. and not that i'm adverse to the developers having fun and all because if any of us were in their shoes wouldn't we want to watch our own conspicuously clever master plans come together from 10,000 feet but if it is at the expense of player fun there is a problem.

maybe it would be fine if your average farmer felt they could "get by" happily by doing their own autonomous thing, but if crops are providing such minuscule energy yields or if they take so long to grow that the Cock Energy refill renders non-guanoed crops essentially useless for personal use - then no one is happily getting by as a farmer.

if the guano and cooking was required only to "excel", there'd still be that conspicuously clever economic exchange but you wouldn't have the situation where wonderfully polite, warm gardening types wander into global chat to lament that the gardens they used to love so much seem to tax them more than provide them with joy.

i know from doing projects that collecting 56 guano is a serious pain.

doing so every 30 minutes of game time sounds horrible.

  • Actually striatic, I headed into the mines with a couple of empty bags... found a nice spot with sparkly and beryl and four batterflies.   I stayed 'til I had both bags full of rocks and guano... ground some up, sold the others and had plenty of guano for gardening.

I hadn't collected guano before so I have nothing to compare to.   It's different from my previous game play, but not a bad experience at all.

  • and say you are collecting guano in by increments of 500 excrements .. that's a long grind and a long time to spend in the caves.

the kind of super grindy heavy clicking exercise that one might have taken up gardening to avoid in the past.

  • pirate apples, you've done this once, and alongside mining?

if you read the previous comments you will see gardeners complaining about not wanting to mine, that's why they garden.

two bags is also only 32 guanos, not nearly enough to fertilize an alakol garden twice.
