  • I wasn't here for first beta, but maybe someone who was can enlighten me.
Were there this many "when are we going to launch?" posts then too?

I'll answer this one in the same way I've answered all the others. TS is not keeping us in beta to torment us. Far from it. It's in their best interests to launch, since then they get more players and more income. But they're acting in our best interests, and they deserve our gratitude for that. They're keeping us in beta because they care about making Glitch the best it can be, and because of that, we're getting a ton of new stuff to enjoy.

Now sit down and enjoy the ride. :)

  • Yeah, Crash here.
No sense of urgency to go live; I think where we're at right now is doing two things:
    a) It's giving us TIME to manifest as a community; this is happening. I have lots of Ur-friends. I like them. I like hanging out with them. I am better in small groups.
    b) It's giving TS TIME to manifest an awesome game.

When the game opens; when the CRUSH OF NEW folks happens -- a lot is going to change.  Our community needs to be resilient enough to absorb, educate, interact with, and form new friendships.  There may not be RULES in a sandbox; but there is an ethos -- nebulous, ineffable -- but an ethos nonetheless.  Most of us know what is and is not glitchy.  Most of us know, innately, how to behave.  When the rush comes, a lot of folks are going to NOT know "our ways," and this will create pressure, and schisms, and lots of other things that happen to communities that scale rapidly.

At the present moment, we each get 3 invites a day; I've invited a few folks aboard, most of whom I know IRL; Some stuck, some did not.  But some really enjoy it, and are fitting right in.

That already allows for geometric growth of our existing userbase.  But not everyone is going to send 3 invites a day, because, you know, why spam?

The slow, invite-only growth rate is allowing the community to grow sustainably.

Now, from TS' POV, it may not be growing fast enough; OTOH, maybe it's growing sustainably, with little churn.  I'm not privy to those numbers.  But I can safely predict that when the doors open, we'll probably see some technical issues relating to scalability, lag etc.  I suspect that TS is working feverishly to get that plumbing as bomb-proof as possible.

TL:DR: Beta is a beautiful sunlit moment, never to repeat (more than twice :) ) itself.  Bask, my friends, in all of its glory.  And don't forget to bounce.

  • They do need to be careful.  One of the things that I feel killed Faunasphere was that the 'community' became so insular and it didn't grow in a way that could sustain the game.  If you weren't a 'beta tester' you could never, ever, be part of the elite and there were people who would loudly make sure you knew that.  That problem hasn't erupted here, and hopefully it never will.
