Add lots & lots of NPC's and specialized shops.

I feel like the game could really be enhanced by switching Quests to a more standard NPC model. (NPC = Non-player character).   In Glitch, I actually find it really annoying that the talking rock keeps popping up random quests at random times that I usually don't really care about.

At the same time, Quests are often the best/easiest way to get Currents & XP, so I end up doing them even though I don't really care.

By adding locations with NPCs, then there could be an ongoing dialog between myself and the NPC, that would ideally focus the quests in a direction that I want to go.  For example, how about if there's a Bakery where only "baked" goods are sold.  You could talk to the Baker to buy stuff, but then the baker could also give you quests that would focus your advancement in cooking/baking-related skills.

This idea is pretty standard in game design (and maybe that's why you've avoided it?) but I think it would really enhance the gameplay.  Better yet, if actual players could "become" a Baker and sell items & give out XP to lower ranked characters for doing quests, that would be even more super awesome.

There are enough skill tracks that this could be generalized out to many, many different professions.  Baker, miner, chemist, butcher, fruit vendor, vegetable vendor, machinist, etc. the list goes on and on.

  • While I like the rock, it's become annoying for me, too, at times. It talks when I don't want to listen. And the quests are supposed to be in line with what I'm doing, but sometimes it's for something I already did, and I have to do it all over again. I hate those. I agree that it's not always appropriate, and that that is annoying.

  • Re: And the quests are supposed to be in line with what I'm doing, but sometimes it's for something I already did." That's because last test, many of the earlier quests were modified to better fit the game today, and everyone up to that level received them, even if they were way past that point. It's just so everyone can give feedback :-)

  • @Cupcake: They weren't quests I did before. They were quests that had to do with something I just did, as in, I already figured out it was a good idea to get emblems, and then the rock gave me a quest to spend 997 favor to learn a skill. If I knew that was coming, I wouldn't have gotten the emblems. I didn't get quests over again, they just had to do with something I did on my own. If I misunderstand, I apologize. I think I understand what you mean, but maybe not.

  • @Crucial

Some new quests were added.  Some old quests were modified.  Everyone who was qualified to receive them received them.  Even if you were so far past the point where you would have gotten them and even if you had already done the things that would have completed the quest.

You may have, on your own, done some of the things that are now included in quests.  That didn't matter.  If a quest was written to be given to someone with Light Green Thumb II, and you have Light Green Thumb II, you were given the quest.  Even if you had already learned LGT III

  • Cupcake and WindBorn are right. Plus, don't fret: after you get to higher levels and it takes longer to learn new skills, you'll start wishing you had more quests... There are a whole bunch at the beginning, and then they slowly taper away to almost nothing.

  • In my mind, the game is 'missing something.' I can't pinpoint it, but I've been calling it 'epicness.' Also, they mentioned that they haven't done everything for L20+, and it definitely feels like that. So, we still don't have 'End Game' content, and so I'm holding out for that. I'm not bashing the game in its current state. I am excited to see where it's going.

But, I, too, would like to see the world fleshed-out with more interactive NPCs. While I love the conversations with the animals and tress, I would definitely like to have more meaningful interactions with the NPCs. I'd like to see more Ixians, and I'd like to hear their stories.
