Nibbling piggies at your house with Animal Kinship VI

Animal Kinship VI is an incredible skill that allows you to nibble pigs without petting them first, and when you have this skill they are only too happy to let you nibble. Twice. Unfortunately, I think I have encountered a bug that occurs when you have AK VI and try to nibble a pig at home:

Repro Steps
-----------
Get AK 6
Capture a piggy and bring her home
Nibble her

Expected Behavior
-----------------
She lets you nibble her and gives you +3 meat

Actual Behavior
---------------
She complains that she's all 'nibbled out'. You feed her and proceed to nibble. Same message.
Pet her and now she's happy to let you nibble

I feel bad pointing this bug out as they give you +6 meat and all you have to do is pet her once. But I didn't spend days learning AK 6 for nothing so here is the bug report. :)

  • Just a question. If you just nibble your pigs at home and never pet them, will they get nibbled out?

  • I'm having this problem without AK6, the pigs at my house aren't allowing me to nibble them, even after being petted and fed.

  • I...suspect this might not be a bug but intentional behaviour.  Trees require both watering and petting or they will die.  It may be the same for piggies (can't confirm with the piggy wiki page - but here's what it says on the tree page).

On that basis, my theory is, while with AKVI you don't have to pet it before nibbling (this definitely works, at least for me), this means a piggy will still need enough petting to be happy with being nibbled.  If there's no one else doing it in your house, that would mean it's pretty much down to you.  Usually in public streets, piggies have received sufficient petting from people without AKVI, meaning you don't need to, so you probably haven't had the problem there.

It kind of makes sense to me in a real life way...  Having a greater kinship with animals shouldn't mean you can effectively neglect them, right?  Just that you have a closer bond ;)

  • exactly having the same problem! i was gunna post a new topic about it.. i understand your point Lara but that whole explanation didnt come with getting the ak6. it said piggies dont need to be petted for a nibble and it didnt have an exception.. it didnt say "but you would have to pet it still sometimes..." -_____- i hope a staff would give us a solid explanation about this.. thank you!

  • I guess that assumes you do most of your nibbling inside your house. That's not the case for me. I leave my meat collector to do most of the work and just spend time petting. Sometimes I don't even bother nibbling my piggies as it's a bit crowded in my garden and I just do a quick tour of the surrounding streets instead, which is actually less stressful to be honest as you don't have to worry about accidentally setting anything free. This might just be me, but in the scheme of things I really haven't found it to be much of a problem... You can't spend all your time in your house anyway if you need to buy ingredients/donate/harvest/etc for whatever else you need to do.

Another way I might phrase the situation is that piggies seem to have two requirements. One is flexible, depending on AKVI, and the other is not. I don't think this necessarily needs to be in the AKVI skill description as it pertains to piggies, not the skill. It'd certainly help to clear up confusion, but if the devs don't add it, it might just be one of those things we have to learn about how animals work.

  • I am going to bump this because I would also like some clarification how the pig mechanics work. Hopefully a dev or someone in the know can contribute to this.

I recently got my house and have been populating it with pigs. However one day I got back and found that there was a pile of meat on the ground and I was short one pig! I thought the pig must have died because I didn't leave any food out. Anyway I have started dropping food on the ground and the pigs seem happy but they are still complaining of being nibbled out. So my questions are:

    1. Do pigs die if not fed?

    2. Does dropping food (produce) on the ground count as feeding them? i.e. given enough time they should become nibble-able again?

    3. Do they need to be petted to become nibble-able?

  • Petting is definitely what enables nibbling. I can attest that feeding has no effect on whether or not you can nibble.

  • Both petting and feeding have an effect on nibbling, toksyuryel.

Piggies that have not eaten in a while will be hungry, and when nibbled will not give meat.  If left without food for long enough, they will die.  Piggies can forage from food on the ground and trees, and public piggies may have been fed by other players, so Toksyuryel may not have encountered hungry piggies before.

Piggies that have not been petted in a while will be unhappy, and will not give meat when nibbled, even when the nibbler has AKVI.  Only private piggies are likely to get in this state, since public piggies will be petted as a matter of course by players with lower levels of AK.

If you don't have AKVI, piggies you haven't personally petted that game day don't quite trust you, and won't give you meat.

  • Do public piggies eat trees? Is that how they usually stay fed?

For that matter, will private piggies eat your trees if allowed into the tree areas? Will they eat your garden? Food on the ground? Chicken? (Just kidding about the chickens.)

  • Plurp - yep, private piggies eat off trees.  That's how mine survived before I could use the piggy feeder, I just kept a fruit tree and had no problems.  They don't eat crops that are growing/have grown in the ground.  They do eat food dropped on the ground.  Haven't noticed any missing chickens :)
