Home Ownership

I'm thinking seriously about buying a house next time we get in to play. I'd love some input about the pros and cons of Glitch home ownership.
-If you're a home owner what do you love about your neighborhood, style of house and it's location within the greater world of Glitch?
-Have any of you experienced buyers remorse and if so, why?
-Is it important to have friendly neighbors or do you ever even see each other?
-If you've owned one type of house and traded for another what was your reason for doing so?
-It would be great to hear your experiences or any other related advice you care to offer.

  • I started with a smallish house on Estevan Meadows and then traded up for a large house on Marrakesh Meadows. I liked the aesthetics of the new house better (sorta Asian feel, to go with my being sorta Asian). I also like that there's more cabinet space in the new house. I don't pay so much attention to who my neighbors are, because we haven't had a block party or any such. I suppose that might happen once the "newness" goes away and all the skills are learnt and there's time to goof off.

  • 1. I love the idea of having neighbors, but I unfortunately never have seen any of them yet, aside from someone being asleep outside their door. :P My house is modeled after two popular games for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Mario Bros. and Pacman. I absolutely adore that aspect of my house; it's what made me choose the address over one in Groddle Forest. We have two neighborhood fruit trees which I take care to water when I'm in the area, in addition to caring for the plants and animals I have in my own back yard.

    2. No buyer's remorse here!

    3. As I mentioned above, I haven't seen my neighbors yet, but I know that the other Estevan Meadows home owners seem pretty friendly from our group discussions. I think a real sense of community would be nice; however, I know everyone was busy in the rush to alpha test. There has been talk about a community picnic or something of the sorts.

    4. I haven't traded houses; I'm perfectly happy where I am now.

    5. Many of the different neighborhoods have groups. If you wanted to preview your neighbors before you buy them (wait, what? :P), you could possibly join one of those groups and either read the discussion or start a discussion of your own.

  • My starter home in Estevan Meadows sported 1 chick, 3 patches, 12 slot storage cabinet and a trophy case. Initially the chick gave me the creeps with its stark and baleful glare so I grossly overfed it into instant maturity. I didn't stay long enough to get to know my neighbors as I mined my way into a three story Shimla Mirch abode. I just loved those wrap around porches and the stilt legs. I lucked into a reasonably priced 4 room cabin. The 3 upper rooms are small and cozy and a "fireman's" hole leads down into a large and roomy basement with a peatbog, jellysac and an egg tree. The selling touch of this particular home was the aquarium of wriggly salamanders?newts?leggy taddypoles? gracing a fine coffeetable.  I also like being close to the project areas - not that I have the uber skills required for new street completions yet. I look forward to the Beta Phase so I can slow down, meet the neighbors and socialize more.

  • I have a large house in Lowland Track, Shimla Mirch. It has 3 floors, the upper two having 2 rooms and the bottom being a large basement. I absolutely LOVE my house....it's big enough to be nice and roomy for any storage, and perfect for parties. The little portals and doorways and floors make for an awesome conga line. So, yeah, as long as you don't mind egg plants and fireflies, my recommendation is to save up the 10,000 currants and buy one in Shimla! :)

  • I live in Tii Quarter right now, on a block that it turns out consists entirely of myself and a couple college buddies. Considering moving; if we spread out we can let each other into houses if we're on and we'll have houses pretty much wherever, so it'll be easier if someone needs to plant a little something. But in and of itself it's quite nice, though I'm not sure I personally am into the Forest much

If I move it'll probably be to a medium/large in the Meadows or one of the houses in the Heights - the former for space (and just because I'm fond of the area in general), the latter for the dark patch. The Shimla Merch houses look beautifully cozy but I'm not sure I want to part with my garden. :3

  • I live in a cave in Tallish Crest.  I originally had a tree house but it was a pain having to find the right place to climb up the trees to find the right house :)  I really like the homes in Shimla Mirch, but, I do want a garden, and, I am poor! Maybe someday.........

  • The storage seems to be an important feature. What can you keep there?
Can you instantly move to your house from anywhere in Glitch?
Do you go home to do things like cooking and grinding powders etc, or do most players just do their tasks where ever they happen to be?

  • I shouldn't have bought my house because I know there's at least one more wipe coming up. Oh well. But I absolutely adore my semi-subterranean house in Tallish Crest, though I think it's storage is a little small. I love living in the same neighbourhood/ block as my friends, and I love the fact that they are so considerate, even planning to release a few piggies and incubating some animals to be on the hall ways :) I think maybe they should make sure that every style of houses has a high grade a nd a low grade, i.e, the semi underground houses can have a few types that look the same, but some has more plots and storage and therefore are more expensive. I don't really want to move to the meadows just because I needed more room.

  • all good questions, RiverWalker - I am also thinking of trying to buy a house, but I think I fancy one with a garden.  Apart from storage, I would like to have some animals and the new ones in Shimla Merch look cool, but I like to sit outside with a beer and admire the view :)

  • I've been thinking of getting a house next test as well, since the word is that we aren't resetting until end of beta, but I have a few questions:

I want a garden - Which areas have these? And do they vary in size? If so, where are the biggest ones?
The storage space seems to vary too - where are the houses with the most?
Posted 20 months ago by Murri Subscriber! | Permalink
  • i live in tallish crest and its nice.  i agree they should have every style of house in every area. i also wish that you could own one of each type or one in each area.  also how will glitch address marriage? or will you ever be able to give people keys? will the married homeowning couple retain both houses with each having access to both?
Posted 20 months ago by IxÆoN Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Murri, everywhere but Shimla Mirch currently has gardens, but of varying sizes. Shimla gardens are on the agenda though, so at some point, they will get their own gardens. In the meantime, the Meadows seems to have the largest gardens, I think. The more expensive the house, the more storage and bigger yard/garden. So, that's a good indication of available space. You don't strictly need a cabinet for storage, but it is locked against guests, so they can't remove any property from inside your cabinet, unlike stuff laying on the ground. Also, only houses with Dark Patches can grow egg trees, if that's important to you.

  • 4est, I know a married couple in game, and they each own their own house, but freely admit the other into their own houses. I don't think the game is encouraging homesharing, since you now have to knock every time you want to go into a neighbor's house, and that would get annoying.
Posted 20 months ago by Essie Kitten Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Have a look here Murri http://www.glitch-strategy.com/wiki/House "All houses except the Gregarious Towers apartments and houses in Shimla Mirch have a 4x4 Garden."
Posted 20 months ago by riscy Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Hmm. After doing some looking, I have to admit that I'm liking the style of the Shimla Mirch housing, and if gardens are planned.... The downside is that it seems like getting to the community gardens from my home will take forever, and there's no mining close by.
I SO want to be able to set more than one teleport point.

Ah, heck. I just fell in love with the location of the Tallish Crest houses. That's where I'll be during beta. Maybe I'll change eventually, but it'll work fine for now.
Posted 20 months ago by Murri Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Ooooh, if gardens are planned for the housing in Shimla Merch, it just got a lot more tempting for me. Probably won't move there quite yet when beta opens up, but maybe worth consideration after a wipe... I do love the style, though I like the Heights house style too.

  • I would reccomend buying a medium size house in the Meadows. There are offers as low as 4k. Get that 4x4 garden and become a "onion kingpin" like I did.

  • 4est, my husband and I are both playing and we bought homes next door to each other...hmm, I bought mine first so maybe he just wanted to keep tabs on me ( all those naked hooch-drinking parties : )...anyways, we still have to knock to enter each others' homes which seems a little strange, but it makes it convenient for us to visit and help each other out, but a spare key would be great!

  • I bought a house kind of randomly, and I haven't spent too much time there yet. Am I unhappy? Not really. In the long term I plan on changing the kind of trees I have, learning the gardening thing, and possibly gathering up more animals, among other things. I also have real life friends who are waiting to get in the game, and I'm thinking of leaving a few things around the house that they can pick up and use if they want.

Though I'm prone to wandering and exploring, it's sort of a nice feeling to know that my character has a home.

  • I own a house in Shimla Merch it took me ages to decide, I checked out a few friends houses first before deciding, although I would like a garden :)

  • I bought the only house I could afford, a pretty hut in Tii Quarter (leaving me with 8 currants). Previous tests I'd tended to stick with cottages in the Meadows area. Originally in Louise Pastures (for joke reasons) which then got moved to Estavan Meadows which was a nice area.

Assuming the reset doesn't come too soon, I'll probably try moving a couple of times this test.

  • I bought a small house in Groddle Forest (Doon Way) and like the fact that the house has a garden and plots for trees, space to have my own pigs, chicks and butterflies. The house is up in a tree and since it was the cheapest model it is very small, 1 room w/the garden down below. There is a cabinet, but I think it only has 9 slots. Next time I will look more carefully and try to pick a location with more thought, I do have my teleport set to the house and use it to drop things off and sort thru my packs. But, if I leave anything in my house it's usually the object I need out in the world and have to go back to get it. I haven't met any of my neighbors, but since the houses are mostly in the trees, that might be why. Money has been an issue in the game for me, between buying the house and the bigger bags I seem to keep running out of it. I'll wait till after the reset and changes settle down to look around for a bigger house.

  • I also have a small tree house on Doon Way (2200 block, maybe we're neighbors?). I like the garden and 3 plots for trees. To be honest, I don't care how much cabinet space there is (9 slots) since all cabinets are too small and I end up littering all over my house anyway. It was one of the cheaper homes but has all the basics I need.

I haven't met any neighbors yet, I would like to improve that. I guess I need to hang out on my street outside my home more.

  • We've been told that the next and final reset will be at the end of beta, and IMHO playing for keeps is the best way to test.  So buy a house!  It adds new dimensions to the game, like gardening and animal herding, and, perhaps most importantly, gives you a place to drop your stuff.

One thing to note: the bit about every house having a 4x4 garden is inaccurate now, since the gardens were redesigned.  My house in Tallish Crest, in Groddle Heights, now has eight plots, and while I love the new design for its ease of use, I do wish I still had the rest of the plots.  I don't know how many plots are available in other houses.
Posted 20 months ago by glum pudding Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Another note, the apartments do have plots but they don't have trees anymore. That's something that needs to be fixed in the descriptions.

  • Early on, as soon as I earned enough currents and still had a cushion, I bought an apartment in Gregarious Grange. It only cost $1000 and gave me a place to drop stuff and do quests. I used it as my teleport destination, which saved me a lot of wandering around when I became lost and confused---which was often at first. LOL

Last session I had enough currents to upgrade to a house. The apartment was nice and convenient, but I wanted to try my hand at gardening and raising livestock. I searched the wiki page and looked at maps to figure out what type of house and where to locate it. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the apartment would bring me 750c when I "sold" it to buy another place.

In retrospect, I probably should have upgraded sooner. I found that I had to buy several bags to store the items I wanted to move to my new place. Also, I delayed in hopes of mining the elusive diamond to complete the set for a trophy, but it was not to be.  I will work on that trophy later:)

  • I can't wait for the ability to buy multiple houses. I have a high-end house in Marrakesh Meadows with 5 patches, but I'd like to get one in Shimla Mirch for the dark patch, peat bog, and jellisac. It should be a really difficult quest, though, if you want a second house. Don't want to make it so easy that there's no housing left for anyone.

  • My first house was in Tii Quarter, which was a great location, but I decided to go with Doon Way after the reset. I think I like Doon Way a bit more. Unfortunately, the two houses I was looking at in Doon Way got purchased by some naughty Glitchlings just moments before I went to go buy my house. I ended up picking a house just above those ones.

  • I got house envy. Bought a nice house in Marlypole Mount. Was very happy with it untill I went to a party at Tofu's house. Once inside I fell in love with it so much I put my cocktail down and ran right out of there and bought me the same kine of house further up the street ;)

  • I bought a lovely little pseudo-Asian themed home in Estevan Meadows Quarter last test and have been enormously pleased with it, particularly the little ALPH sign done in japanese calligraphy brush strokes - I didn't even know that was in there, but it's great since Alph is my favorite of the Giants (Tii and Pot being second and third, respectively).

If ever houses are made available in Ix, though, I'm dumping this place and getting one, as fast as Glitchly possible,  I adore Ix.

I really like the space, 4 rooms and also the large area underneath. I'm looking forward to having gardens in Shimla Mirch though!

  • I bought my house just for the location, 2200 block Doon Way *waves to FrankenPaula* Howdy neighbor! I liked it because it's close to the subway and the mines. I do like the look of the Shimla Mirch houses the best, and think it would be fun to have my very own swam of fireflies :) so I might try living there soon.

  • My first house I bought was on Doon Way 1100 section (hey there neighbors or use to be neighbors). I LOVED my tree house. I loved jumping out of my house and into my back yard. I loved climbing up to get back into the tree house from the backyard. I did love climbing outside in front to get to my house. But like it was mentioned before, I too got tired of the confusing routes to climb and get to my house. I also didn't like that I got stuck in the branches trying to get down from my tree house either. So the next house i bought was in the same area Doon Way 3100 section, but the house was on the ground this time. It was perfect and I could still jump to get out into the backyard. I moved only because I wanted more storage and a bigger yard to garden and grow trees. I really really like the house I have now on Marrakesh Meadow but I LOVED my tree house. As for neighbors, I don't know any of them neither on Doon Way or on Marrakesh Meadows.

I wish they would have different house sizes for the tree houses and the caves like they do for the houses on Marrakesh and Marylpool and in the Shimla Mirch. I don't I would have moved from my tree house if they did.

  • I just bought a house. It's nice. Hope there are plans to let us decorate, create new patches/plots. Add livestock. Add storage (not just drop stuff).  And maybe community gardens in the locations where the houses are. To give us more social avenues.  It's a good start. :)

  • 1. Storage: unimportant
Cabinets are REALLY small and 6 slots to 12 slots doesn't make much of a difference. You always end up piling stuff on the floor in the end. So pay NO attention to cabinets when choosing a house

    2. Patches: crucial
Trees, pigs, chicks and butterflies are everywhere. Patches are very, very rare. Growing stuff comes really handy even if you are not a cook. A potato garden can sustain your glitch for a few days.

    3. Location, location, location
If you participate in projects you wont keep your house as a teleport landing spot for long. Its best to buy a house really close to a subway station.

    4. Neighbors: careful
As I mentioned before, you end up piling your stuff on the floor of the house. So better trust those friends you let in. Otherwise you will end up with a very long face.

  • I have lived in 5 different types of housing....Each has it's own plus and minus lists..The enjoyment for me is just trying each style out..So I have to have all my bags in order and good to go at the drop of a "For Sale" sign...Which means nothing stays on my floor unless I don't care about it..That way I can sell and trade up on a whim.
