Why do you auction below street vendor price?

This baffles me a lot. I constantly see people selling 50 x Chunks of Metal Rock for 150c (or even less). Which, given the listing fee of 3c and commission of 12c doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me (it nets 135c). Street vendors pay 3c per chunk...

Why not sell to street vendors directly, make an additional 15c AND have the currants right away?

  • Because people like to help other people out! :D

  • Well, but you know that it's fairly easy to arbitrate this?

Because I can simply buy those auctions and sell them at a profit to street vendors...

  • OK, I got the math slightly wrong. Street vendors buy Chunks of Metal Rock for 2c. Selling 50 Chunks of Metal Rock for below 112c is at a loss.

  • You're welcome to do that Revilo.  Some people do play the game only to collect currants.  Many of us don't

  • I have a lot of stuff I don't need and there are so many glitchlings running around, I don't know who *does* need them.  Giving stuff randomly away is fun, but I also want to get keys to the right people etc. so I usually sell them below cost in the auction.  :-D

  • When I want to get rid of a lot of stuff for cheap, I just shout that I'm giving a cheap bulk buy. I will then either value it as suggested price, or slightly over. For example, if I'm liquedating Cherries, I'll do them for 2/each. The person is usually willing to meet-up with me. Once I have T4, I'll just Tele to them though.

    edit

Forgot to answer OP's rhetorical question. The answer is obvious. Ignorance.

  • And maybe people do it so they can actually sell the items instead of people going to the street vendor to purchase things.  Why would you pay *more* than street vendor price for an item?

  • Shhh. Don't point that out! It's a time-honored way of making game currency, buying stupidly underpriced items from an AH and immediately selling them to a vendor for profit :)

  • If your focus is making currants, then you've already come up with an answer.

Otherwise, it's as an earlier poster stated: it's helpful. In other words, it allows newer/younger Glitches to participate in activities. And there's just something fun in helping people, when far too many games are shoot-em-in-the-face deals.

Incidentally, during beta, I put up an auction for something that was fairly close to street price and it never sold.

  • I think if you're expecting a sell-order-only (opposed to bi-transactional) auction house to serve as an outlet for generosity and helping new Glitches, you're likely to be disappointed as the game grows. IMO that impulse is better served by in-game trade fairs, welcome parties, GC or other coalitions rather than expecting players who may never read the forums to intuit that underpriced AH items are intentionally benevolent.
