Asshole

Got your attention? It got mine. That was the name of a piggie I saw running around. Devs, you might want to put in a profanity filter on the animal names.

The actual profanity doesn't bother me, the crassness of it does. I mean, if you're going to use "bad" words in animal names, at least make it in french or something interesting. Connard! Merdre!

  •   I understand the thumbs up/thumbs down idea, and how it could inhibit the use of 'foul-language',but the opposite is true too, there is nothing to stop people, and their friends, and their friends' friends,to team up and get a socially 'more acceptable' name, such as Buttercup, barred. I can see how this kind of thing could lead to the same scale of friction as the issue of planting vs killing trees is/was,and I'd rather not get into all that.
So,I have come to think it's a healthier-for-me attitude,if I just ignore what is foul language/foul behavior to me, use my ability to change the names that go beyond my tolerance-limit, and also to accept -but possibly avoid- those who are too abrasive to my nature. I want to enjoy this game, and I want others to enjoy it too, whatever that means to them (bullying excepted).

I would like to take this opportunity to say, I absolutely love what the creators of this game have produced here,I love the witty humor expressed in place names and the things animals and plants say,I also love that what they say goes by just fast enough to where it takes a couple of times before you have read it all, that keeps it interesting for a lot longer. The one that cracked me up the other day,was when a chicken said "Ping." and popped out the egg it just incubated for me. =)

  • And especially the mining jokes. Never fail to amuse me either :P

  • Yeah, there's a lot of material for good laughs, just need to take a second to read it.

  • For the record, I love all the off color jokes. I don't think they're in the same category as a pig called "cuntlicker" or something like that. To say that would be a great dis-service to the devs.

I have one more suggestion and then I'll try to shut up about it. :)

A personal blocked words list. You'd access it form your account information and could add words to it at any time. Those words would then be blocked as animal names. That way, everybody could take care of it themselves if they want to without affecting anybody else's game play and the devs would not have the impossible task of making a list for us.

  • I thought a lot about this thread yesterday (and last night), and why this is so important to me.  It's just that I think Glitch is a beautiful place both visually and verbally, I do appreciate its sly humour, and seeing a graceless word like the ones mentioned before just breaks the spell.

I am changing my opinion to no-filter, mostly because impetus for a filter comes out my personal opinion--it's just what I want, I have not really bothered to gauge it as a community want.  The no-censorship and not-efficient arguments against a filter I most respectfully disagree with, but appreciate, especially when they aren't served up with a side order of grow-up-and-get-over-it.

  • I think FrankenPaula has a good point.  Either we can control which words we filter, or, we have the option of a profanity filter.
Posted 19 months ago by frenchphenom Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Not that it's needed, but I'll add my 2 cents since I have kids and would love them to experience Glitch.  At the same time, I want them to have a positive experience and not be overwhelmed with crude (i.e. unimaginative) text.

The best option would be to put in community controls to vote up and down for names and labels.  If something gets enough 'down' votes, it gets changed.  That type of system works well for Wikipedia, StackOverflow, and other crowdsourced projects.  The result is a body of text that is acceptable to the community as a whole.  While it may still be too off-color for some, at least it should reach an equilibrium, and crude names would be short-lived.

  • It is perfectly possible to be massively offensive without using words like shit, piss and cunt. If people want to offend others, a content filter isn't necessarily going to hold them back,  it will just inspire them to be creative.

(ps, I have no interest in naming piggies, etc)

  • Wow...I have a headache....I have children elementary age and just above. They have seen me play this game and they can't wait to get their hands on it. I would like to keep them as innocent as possible. So, if there is a way to keep their little minds clean it is greatly appreciated. And I say that for all children. If I see anything I don't approve of in this game then my kids just won't play. Which then will lessen my chances of playing because summer is approaching and they will be home saying, " We want to play too...why can't we play?"  I would think the devs would want to keep this so kids of all ages can play...more money for them in the end...right?

  • I don't think many kids would play this game for very long.

My 8 year old actually doesn't get the jokes, and thinks there is way too much talking.  My 14 year, while not exactly bloodthirsty, likes a bit 'o killing, and there's none of that in the game.

And (just speaking of my experience), I can't afford to get entangled in a subscription for every single game my kids get interested in-- I would paying out the [title of this thread] every ten minutes.

  • Miss Muffett - the developers have said time and time and time again - this game is not intended for children. Well intentioned and altruistic as it seems to say 'keep it clean', it simply *not* what this game was designed to be.

The argument of 'keep it sweet so the kiddies can play' as a way to reach a wider market audience is actually counter-intuitive. As a parent, you're unlikely to pay $45 a month so you and your two kids can play a game together.... your account might be paid, but the kids would probably be on a free account. How many adults are willing to pay $15 a month for a totally PG rated game? So by making it 'safe for the kids minds', you actually wind up driving away your revenue base.

Sorry, but the core of the gaming industry is geared to children, teens, and young adults. I'm thrilled to see the grown ups getting a little attention for a change, and think part of Glitch's success hinges on providing a new outlet in a seriously under-served market.

(editing to add: You are welcome to tell your kids what I told mine... if you still want to play when you are old enough and mature enough, you are welcome to. I'm not going to give you permission to drive a car early simply because you are tall enough - some things you have to wait for)

  • The problem with under 13 playing is the whole legal minefield of COPPA.

As far as names of animals goes, if you don't like it, change it, or ask in Global for someone that also doesn't like it with the skill to change it.

The game is community driven, lets take ownership of the ingame content we have some control over ourselves and leave the devs to give us the cool stuff :)

  • People keep returning to profanity without acknowledging pejorative action (when people would not only be seeking to offend, but actually verbally assualt another player with words intended to hate). I'm all for words like fuck and shit and all of that... but there really is no place for words like faggot, nigger, kike, wetback, chink, retard, etc. What good would it do to allow those words (with the exception of their use in cases like this, which is only to speak of the evil you're trying to abolish)? What harm does it do to censor those words?
Posted 19 months ago by Cerulean Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Miss Muffet: Honest, non-snarky question, and I realise you're not beholden to answer for all of the Clean Glitch posse, but I am I right to think you believe adults have a right to games and other entertainment with adult (for what of a better term) content? And therefore, your objection to Glitch being adult in some not-so-private parts, is because it looks cute as is therefore appealing to younger players?

I recall a similar kerfuffle surrounding what were called Alcopops over here- alcholic drinks with a "fun" image, based on lemonade or other soft drinks, and which were claimed by some to be enticing to children in a way that a bottle of regular vodka wasn't?

  • Excellent idea FrankenPaula:
"A personal blocked words list. You'd access it form your account information and could add words to it at any time. Those words would then be blocked as animal names. That way, everybody could take care of it themselves if they want to without affecting anybody else's game play and the devs would not have the impossible task of making a list for us."
---as long as it wasn't to hard to include in the game & wouldn't take away from the other things the devs are doing. Then I wouldn't have blinders slapped over my eyes by someone who wants the game changed to be acceptable to those it wasn't designed for. Tiny Speck has done a wonderful thing in creating Glitch, I don't know of another game like it anywhere. There are thousands of games that are perfect for parents to play with their children.

  • And changing names can be rather tedious when there will be people out there absolutely bent (obsessed) with naming EVERY animal they find something pejorative, and then naming it back to that when they find someone has changed it to something more appropriate. And I mean obsessed. People that will sit there all day with the sole objective of doing so, most likely due to a mental illness.

  • Cerulean, I agree, but I also understand now that the actual list of words would differ from person to person, especially due to language & cultural differences. (Although I think most would agree that the ones you listed are offensive). That's why I suggested a personal blocked words feature where anybody can add whatever words they wish to their own personal profanity filter.

And, I think it would be funny of those words would be replaced at random by words like "golly", "fudge", "darn" and so on, thus making the offender sound like the Beaver. ;-)
Posted 19 months ago by FrankenPaula Subscriber! | Permalink
  • FrankenPaula, I actually do really like that idea, especially with the addendum to replace the offensive words with rather wholesome ones. :D

EDIT: Though now that I think about it seeing those words is going to upset me because I'll know there's something offensive behind it, lol. As long as the game randomizes whatever word replaces a bad word (i.e. "[offensive word]" could be replaced with "Sunshine" or "Lollipops" but it won't always be replaced by the same word), so that you really don't know if a word is hiding an offensive word and won't associate one bad word with one good one, lol.
Posted 19 months ago by Cerulean Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Franken, Golly can be seen as pejorative, in reference to black people, and fudge is also used in a variety of pejorative ways also. Just go look at  urbandictionary. I like your personal list, as the whole language thing is totally subjective.

  • [stupid double post]
Posted 19 months ago by Araldia Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Araldia, good point. I know that "Eeny Meeny Miney Moe" is also extremely offensive to African-American culture. For those of you wondering, it's because it's not a tiger they're catching by the toe, but rather someone else with a spelling similar to "tiger" (think two Gs).
Posted 19 months ago by Cerulean Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Well, then the words could just be replaced with *** or if it's a piggy or other animal, it could just appear unnamed.
Posted 19 months ago by FrankenPaula Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @FrankenPaula: As someone who isn't often offended, I'm not sure how people who have issues with, shall we say, strong words, feel about "starring out"- i.e. "I have a awful rash on my c*nt".

I appreciate you went with a different approach, of wholesale word replacement, but the problem is, what if people mangle their own words in that fashion to dodge your bowdlerisation, and therefore you end up seeing that? All of us who grew up in the spam filter era have seen how creative people can be in that endeavour.

I think the block function, if suitably all-encompassing, as has been said before, is the best option, coupled with the flagging of user-contributed names (the vote-up/down won't work, because people who like funny-offensive terms will vote them up and make the visible, a flagging would mean that anything potentially rude would be invisible to the players who have opted for Tipper Goggles, and visible to the rest of us) is a pretty good set of tools.

But you'll still have to contend with the fabric of the game, which has suggestive or outright sweary content. As people keeps saying, it looks cute, but so does South Park. It is also not for children.

Also, haha, you said beaver. Oh gosh darn it to heck. That was cheap of me.
Posted 19 months ago by beechamel Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Well there are probably bound to be great words that aren't meant to be offensive. Like I said, "Sunshine" and "lollipops" might work. If not that then "Hearts," "Stars" and "Horseshoes" ... "Clovers and Blue Moons. Pots of gold & rainbows, & me red balloons!" Lots of innocent words there.
Posted 19 months ago by Cerulean Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Travinara, I am very new to this game and haven't had the time to read the days and days worth of forums to know that the devs said that this game isn't intended for children. I kinda got that clue when there were alcoholic drinks that could be bought and made in the game. However, there is no mention on the Glitch website stating the game is not intended for children.
Posted 19 months ago by Miss Muffett Subscriber! | Permalink
  • So will the blocking filter also block the game place names that are crude?

How much of the game can you hide before you don't want to play it any more?
Posted 19 months ago by WindBorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Windborn, it would be a personal filter. You wouldn't have to use it at all, why do you mind if others do?
Posted 19 months ago by FrankenPaula Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I agree with Cerulean, it bears pointing out that there are some words that are unacceptable, period- the list they gave is a good example. While we can debate whether censoring 'asshole' and 'fucker' is too much, there's no such debate over 'nigger'. So, some kind of filter IS necessary.
Posted 19 months ago by Cefeida Subscriber! | Permalink
  • racists are able to misspell words too,  in fact they often do
Posted 19 months ago by shhexy corin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm not saying we can prevent every bit of inappropriate language, I'm saying some are not up for debate at all and thus can be filtered without controversy.
Posted 19 months ago by Cefeida Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I know I already put my two currants worth in, but I have to agree censorship is a very hard thing to do.. an option for each individual could be the answer and end this endless topic.

The only thing that really bothers me about seeing such words is that the person who is writing those words is lacking respect for the other players.  People like that very rarely stop with just writing  words... they will eventually get bored and move on to bigger and more offensive actions.
Posted 19 months ago by Qizara Subscriber! | Permalink
  • If there are truly words that are not up for debate, then the correct action by TS would be to remove the poster from the game, not to block the words.  Hate speech and bullying are behaviors that will not be allowed.  It's not the words themselves that are the problem, it is the use of them as tools and weapons.

Some of my African-American friends call each other 'nigger'. "Cunt" is less offensive in some English-speaking countries and more offensive in others.  No filter is going to be able to manage the nuances of bawdy, raucous speech.  What can be managed is in-game behavior that is harassment of other players.
