Why Are We Having So Much Unhappiness Lately?

This is the first time I have started a discussion so bear with me. When I joined this game around launch time (I was not in beta sadly) I fell in love with this game immediately. I loved the fact this was a game was made for adults and everyone I met on the game was so welcoming. Lovely gaming community where everyone you bumped into was so friendly, giving and willing to help. This game was like a breath of fresh air from other games I have played or am playing. Sure there was a few undesirable players out there but very very few that you hardly bumped into them at all.

Then this Unlaunching happened. We are now back in beta. New skills have been implemented. All the sudden we are having an increase of thefts, hurt feelings, anger, and self-righteous behavior from players that feel they have a "right" to take what is obviously not theirs but feel they have the right "since it is a community garden" or "since that guano drops on the ground" as a few examples. Where is all this coming from and why? I am honestly puzzled about this sudden turn in behavior.

I am opening this as a discussion, please don't flame or troll.

  • I came up with an idea that I think may help with the recent herb garden issue.

I would like to propose a Glitch Farmer's Market that encourages the trade of herbs, vegetables, animal goods, and hooch (can't forget the booze) so that everyone has access to what they need and gets their fair share.

I'm not sure if anyone would participate though... and i'm still working out the details and kinks.

What do you guys think? Here is a link to the group: http://www.glitch.com/groups/RDOGRHBQ71J28CB/

I posted a new thread with this also: http://www.glitch.com/forum/general/13861/

  • I apologize. I did not mean for this to be a shameless plug. It is merely an idea that I had after reading this thread. I posted it here as a reply to the discussion. I created a new thread from the comment because I wanted to get people's opinions. I posted the link to the group because I had written most of my ideas there.
I can see how it could be interpreted otherwise but that was not my original intention.

  • @Dreamboat Annie
I like those stories. I like them a lot! There is wisdom in them.

@Why Are We Having So Much Unhappiness Lately?
I used to ask myself the same question; in the end I chalked it up to stress and community growing pains.

  • Casobra Amberrose, you are right to wonder about the cause of these problems because that's how we find solutions.  Your concern for the happiness of your fellow players is admirable and I salute you for braving the confusion of the forums

There are two answers.  One is too simple to be satisfying.  The other is too complex to be captured in the thousands of years of philosophical writing that humans have created so far.  Even limiting the scope of the question to "recently" and "in Glitch" doesn't simplify the problem enough to make a single satisfactory answer become obvious.

And so, while asking "why" is neigh futile (but still worthwhile!), asking "what can we do about it" is far more rewarding.  I have two examples of my favorite answer to that question.  One is Xev's famous Underground Splanking Ring.  The other is Vera Strange's hilariously disastrous experiments.

We (who are having this conversation) all strive to understand the sources of strife.  I hope that never stops.  But we must include in this quest experiments which we hope will restore balance to the world.  When people bother us we should try various responses such as simply ignoring them, role-play and if it comes to it, brazen kindness.

I look forward to hearing all your reports on how these experiments unfold.  Godspeed my Glitchy friends!

  • I reject the whole premise of the thread.

We aren't all having so much unhappiness.

Maybe people are bored and spending too much time doing their pop psychology on each other.  This isn't Teletubbies, nor a Rainbow Brite theme park.  And it isn't the happy-fun closed community that it apparently was during 'Beta.'  The Beta period, as people hearken back to it, actually sounds kinda boring.

I am not a super fan of conflict for the same of conflict, but all the whining on the forums in the recent past is just whining on the forums.  Vast numbers of glitches don't even come to the forums at all.  They're out in the game.  Having fun doing things that interest them.  And a lot of the complaining here is very very narcissistic.  "We are so great!  This game is so cool!  This game used to be so cool!  We are so great and it's a shame those OTHER people have joined the game and it's not so cool anymore."  On and on and on.

Make your reality in Ur.  Don't keep talking about what you think the problems are.  Do the things you think you need to do.  And please don't drive from the back seat.  The Tiny Speck devs are steering things pretty well.
