Allow people with keys to my house to pick up objects inside (incl. from SDBs, cabinets)

I'd like to have the option of allowing people with keys to my house (or, even better, specific people who have keys to my house) to pick up and use objects inside, including from SDBs, cabinets, and shelves.  I have friends who like to come by and use my machine room, which is great -- that's what it's there for -- but only I can use the stash of fuel cells to refuel things, which is annoying.

Keyholders can remove things from a cabinet already.  SDBs dont need to let anyone but the owner remove items.

  • Are you sure keyholders can remove things from a cabinet?  I know for certain they can't remove things from a shelf or an SDB.

Anyhow, maybe the way you use SDBs you don't need anyone but the owner being able to remove items, but I use SDBs for basic organization and I do want my friends to be able to remove things.

  • Yes, keyholders can remove things from Cabinets.  Anyone that had a key has always had access to a house cabinet, when we only had one cabinet and no SDBs to speak of.

Giving keyholders access to SDBs will only cause serious trouble.  We had major issues just with keys/cabinets within 30 minutes of us being given the ability - with access to SDBs and no way to keep folks out - someone can and will take advantage of that.

Maybe your friends need to provide their own fuel.  Or you can set machines outside on your street, then they dont even have to come inside.  There are lots of ways to give them machines to use without taking away the security of SDBs.

  • I think you misunderstand: I want to have the option of giving keyholders access to SDB contents.  I know and trust everyone I gave a key to; perhaps you don't, that's fine, you can leave the option un-checked.

  • People get confused about the way house/tower permissions work already.  I think before they added more options they'd need to make some kind of tutorial or something specifically for the permissions.  I know I've seen multiple people in live help ask about missing items when they gave out keys to their house, apparently not realizing stuff on the floor could get taken, for example.

  • i would like this too - right now you definitely can get things from cabinets, but like a few weeks ago a friend left some things on the table for me, not realizing i couldn't get them. it's silly to think you can go into cabinets but not take something sitting out in the open.

and to make it less confusing (though perhaps tedious at first) they would just have EVERYTHING have the option to be taken, with the default being nothing, so no one gets robbed ;p (i.e., each shelf, box, etc. not each individual item which could get crazy, heh.)

  • I'm not clear on the rules for towers, actually. I know anybody can use the machines in the towers, and that's great. However, some veggies I set out as an altar display for Mab have gone missing. I'm not sure if that means I should have word with the keyholders, add a sign, or just give up.

  • If it's your house, just sell the items you are happy for them to help themselves to for a very low price.

  • Set the price on the SDBs at 1 currant.  Then they can get the item for (almost) free.  Not quite as nice looking, maybe, but very handy!

Edit: Crap, had this tab open too long before replying - didn't see shhexy's exact same suggestion above me!  :)

  • I'm sorry; but I'm on the other side of this. I would like the option to block keyholders from being able to access your cabinets and stuff.

I want to be able to store things the way I would like (aka without having 100 SDB's littering my home) and still be able to know that the items would stay there safely.

  • +1 for options

As I've said before, I think each storage item should have permissions associated:
    - owner only
    - key-holders
    - friends
    - everyone

  • As much as being able to change setting on each option, piece of furniture etc, would be nice, this would also cause mass confusion, not to mention possibly forgetting  you set Item A to one setting and Item B to another....and so on.  The main reason i won't give out keys now is because  keyholders have access to cabinets. If they add SDB....its likely ppl will get taken from before knowing that they should revoke the key they gave. Yes we like to think we can trust ppl, and many of us can, but if you allow access to everything its much more likely that it will happen much more often.

  • that's why the default would be 'owner only' imo - so no one has to worry about forgetting to set something. and you'd see the permission (just like you see 'item name') when you hovered over the item, so if you put something there, you'd see what you have it set to.

it would be pretty hard to forget unless you're not looking, heh.

  • Beyond: towers are still buggy

  • nugget: as the owner of a three-floor house that is filled top to bottom with clutter and piles (and I like it that way), yes, it would be easy to forget.

I know it makes a lot of sense to have the default be owner only, and have permissions beyond that.  But there is such a thing as having too many permissions.  Things can get more confusing than you think for the new player, the person who doesn't spend a lot of time playing the game, people who do play a lot but focus on things other than their house, etc.

In any case, staff has specifically mentioned not wanting to overwhelm the user with preferences (not just with houses but in general) and while I often think that this or that would be nice to have user-set options for, I do understand what they're getting at.

  • oh i agree - everyone wants an option for everything, before you know it you can't even see what you're doing! i just figured for basic storage units. like, if you have a pile of stuff on the floor, no, but i don't like that i can't leave something out for someone - it's a pain to have to be in game and there to give it to them, or remember to mail & pay for it, etc.
