Unpleasant encounter

I was waiting for the key to spawn in Gomen crap to neva neva. I am the only one there for the past 10min till another glitch appears (teleported), stand at the same spot and snatch the spawned key away. I was thinking to myself, I hope this is not a mean glitch and try to talk to him.

Our exchanged of conversation went like this:-

You are feeling focused.
I am safe.
Darn. Got distracted. That was relaxing. +10 mood, +10 energy, +4 xp
XX is here!
You  hey
XX  you
XX get into my car
You  the key spawned and you took it right?
XX yeah
You  mind giving me the key? I queued for a while and will be going in neva neva
XX  yes I would mind.....
XX fair is fair
You  huh?
XX  we had equal opportunity is what im saying
You  u came later than I did and can't possible just snatch the key away
XX  next ones all yours, peace out!
XX just left for Uppma Uplands Quarter

--So in the end, he took the key and zone back to his place.---

Well guess I can't do much but to wait patiently (with finger crossed that no mean glitch will appear) for the next key spawned. Understand that this might be nothing new and will bound to happen to the unfortunate glitchens one fine day. Blame it on my luck :(
However; I felt there is a need to share this thread so that more will be aware that even if you are there first and waiting (no matter how long), the spawned item will be snatched.

P.S. I hope the developer have something in the pipeline (new patch coming) to allow better in-game experience by minising such unpleasant related incident from happening...e.g. like a 60sec lock item etc...?

  • Check your mailbox for a key to neva neva.  We're not all greedy and selfish :)

  • What the other Glitch did was rude. However, a 60 second item lock (like on dropped items and planted herbs) would be hard if not impossible to do in this case, where the brand-new key has had no previous owner, especially if more than one person was in the area of effect.

  • I think I would prefer to see a way for players to create keys (I understand there are some mild mechanics already in place). The ability for player created objects, such as keys, would reduce the potential amount of ugliness when the world is a much bigger place.

  • Can't you make a key with keycutter potion already?
Posted 11 months ago by White Tiger Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The keycutter potion can only change an existing key in to another type of key, and it is a random process (i.e. you can't choose what key it will change in to).

I am bit confused - I didn't realise that keys "spawn". How do I find such places? How did everyone else know about these types of places?

  • Anderella: Certain items spawn at random places (for instance, there is a rock that inexplicably produces honey). Keys tend to spawn somewhat near the door they unlock, in my experience, though they can be hidden by scenery. This thread has some locations: http://www.glitch.com/forum/general/13738/

  • Hate to say it, but that is pretty typical behavior for some of the more 'rare' key spawning spots (there are some who are nice, but just as many that are quite rude about it)...it's pretty much why I don't camp out anymore, and if I'm in the area, and key happens to be there, I'll grab one, but if there are people waiting, I just walk on by...too much drama over those teal/white triangle keys especially.

It's a shame the key cutter is random...but thanks for explaining it.  I wasn't sure how it worked until now...I know...check the wiki...but somethings I like to wait on finding out... ;)
Posted 11 months ago by ~Pink Flamingo~ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Oh,  I assumed it was random because I tried it on a few keys and they changed. I haven't tried it since. There may be some sort of pattern (e.g. teal/white keys always transform into orang/blue keys). May be a good idea to check out the wiki on it, I haven't checked it out there :-)

  • Why was the key sitting there for the other player to take?  By leaving it sit there, you were preventing another key from spawning.  How long had it sat there?  If you had picked it up immediately and it not been there for the other player to grab, another key might have spawned so that both of you could have had one by the time the other player arrived.

People can not just camp out at a spawn location AFK and expect other players who arrive to just wait, watching a key sit there and block another key from spawning, merely because the 'first' player who was already there is not picking it up.

  • It is frustrating when that happens, but spawns are free for the taking and you weren't paying attention.  Often people will agree to take turns, but I don't see how the game can ensure that - some glitches used to spend half the day waiting for the Neva Neva keys, and they'd always have been there "first".

It also appears from the other glitch's response that s/he thought "hey" was not a polite form of address, so you guys may simply have gotten off on the wrong foot with each other.    Edit: oh lord, Billy Ocean - really?  :)

  • It's funny how Mr. XX started singing a song in response to your "HEY!".
Hey! You!  Get into my car!

Looks like you're just out of luck.  Luckily someone was nice enough to listen to your whining and sent you a key for free.  Next time you'll pay more attention if you really want the key spawn that bad.

  • I think that asking for the key was rude.  It would have been better if you had asked to follow him in.

I think the singing part was very funny - he definitely wins on charm and wit.

Key spawns are freebies.  There is no reason why one person is more entitled to a free thing than another.

  • Just because you're waiting for a key doesn't make it yours, any more than a barnacle or rock is yours. I can see the argument for not taking a waiting person's crops, as they planted and watered and fertilised them themself, but you didn't put anything into that key being there. It's everyone's game, not just yours, and everyone has the right to that key. You snooze you lose.

  • I agree with everyone else saying you snooze you lose.

  • I mine for poo at Kanji Sink, which is also the place where the Plexus key spawns.  As I am standing there, as if waiting, I have found a number of times that players have asked if I am poo collecting or waiting for the key.  Thus they are polite and thoughtful enough to not just snatch the key.

Now the Plexus key spawns much quicker than the Neva Neva key and has a relatively lower value in the game, but that should not mean that people cannot ask those that are standing in the spawn spot if they are after the Neva Neva key.

As an aside, perhaps there could be a limit put on how many keys an individual player can pick up in a day to stop people simply porting in and out on the spawn time. The keys spawn freely, so everyone should have a chance to grab them freely, not just some who quickly port in at the spawn time, port out again and put the key up on the auctions.

Btw, to those saying the XX should have invited the poster in to Neva Neva, he didn't go into Neva Neva. He ported in, grabbed the key and then ported to Uppa Uplands.

  • If the devs added a little randomness to the spawn time it would be much harder to teleport in and arrive at the perfect time.

  • If the peat bogs and jellisacs can be coded to be harvestable only once each game day, the same can be done for the keys. Then everyone would have a chance to get into the doored streets without the drama of camping or the expense at auction.

  • IDK. I think personally you were the rude one in this case. Just because you are standing there doesn't automatically make the key yours. You demanded the key from him and expected him to be nice about it. For all we know he isn't a hoarder or seller, he could be planning to go mining later in the day.

  • This is unpleasant, but that's the risk you take when waiting, unfortunately.  The other person didn't really do anything wrong.  If you want to get into NN or AB, I'd recommend checking out multiple spawn spots, waiting by the door for someone who'll let you follow them, or asking in chat if anyone's headed that way or in there and willing to summon.  I usually find keys when I'm not looking for them and save them for later; so don't forget to make a trip past the spawn spots on your way home!

  • I agree with Zauberberg when he says that it is unpleasant, but the other Glitch did absolutely nothing wrong.

I'll reference OP stating "However; I felt there is a need to share this thread so that more will be aware that even if you are there first and waiting (no matter how long), the spawned item will be snatched." As a testament to this thread being a case of hurt feelings rather than actually having any place on the forums.

  • So you're saying that the teleporter should have waited for you to wake up and notice the key?
Posted 11 months ago by WalruZ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • This is what I understand that you said (there seem to be variations on this):
    1.  You were waiting for the key to spawn.
    2.  While waiting you meditated.
    3.  While meditating the key spawned.
    4.  Before you could grab the key someone else got it.
    5.  He did not offer it to you and you did not ask if you could follow him into Neva Neva.
    6.  He did not go into Neva Neva but tele'd home.

This then sounds as though he may have intended to sell the key.  it doesn't matter if he had a sense of humor.  He knew that you wanted the key and had been waiting for it.  He did not know if you were also a salesman.  Manners (there it is that "ugly" word) would dictate that he let you have the key as you were there first.

I don't know how long it takes to spawn but it seems lengthy which makes for bad behavior, disappointment, etc.  I do know that it must take a while.  I believe I have waited a minimum of 5 min. (probably more).  I usually leave when someone else begins waiting because it is likely they will grab the key (I am slow).  I have never gotten the key though I have been to Neva Neva because a good friend sent me a key and I have also followed another into the place.

Too bad this happens but it is not uncommon, sadly.

  • I quite often take a key, when I find one, to use at another time; I've never sold one.  It's possible XX wanted to sell it, as the above poster suggests, sure... but at recent prices it's hardly worth the trouble of two teleports (one with a token, if the exchange was as fast as the transcript suggests).   This particular key spawns in four locations approximately every ten minutes (okay, 7-15 or so), which is not that long to wait even if you have to wait for a second spawn - and in that span of time, you are also almost sure to be able to hitch a ride into AB or Neva neva, if you just stand by the door.

  • Two points:

    1) Key spawn times are (or at least can be) random.  See near the end of Blanky's post here.
    2) I may be wrong on this one, but as far as I know it is not possible to set to teleport exactly to a key spawn location - only to a (probably) random location on a given street.  What you can do, however, is exit the world from the key spawn location.  When you re-enter the game you will appear exactly where you were when you left.  I suspect this is the mechanism the key-grabber used.

That being said, I can certainly understand the OP's consternation at the situation.  There she was happily meditating away at the spawn location; no doubt keeping an eye on the little street map to watch out for anyone else approaching.  It probably had never occurred to her that it was possible for another Glitch to suddenly materialize out of nowhere right on the key.  I agree she didn't handle the situation particularly well, but that's understandable as she was taken totally by surprise.  I also agree that the key-grabber had every legal right to take the key, but neither I nor any of the Glitchen I hang out with would every snatch a key that someone else was waiting for.

Edit.  Discovered I was wrong about the teleporting.  You can set the spawn location as your teleport point and then you will go precisely there.

  • @Hawkwell, as far as my own experience, you teleport to whichever spot you set the point at.

  • I'm with XX on this one.
Your meditation wasn't even occurring at the time that XX appeared and then took the key.
XX is correct in stating that you each had equal opportunity to get the key.

Does it suck that someone else got the key when you'd been waiting there for it?
    Yes

Was the key yours because you were spawn camping?
    No.

In fact I think you are being unpleasant about the situation.

XX was very friendly, making a joke via song lyrics and talking nicely to you even after you accused them of snatching the key away and asking for it to be returned to you as if it was your property.  In response you complain on the forum about their behavior which was in my opinion incredibly friendly and light-hearted.  If you had spoken to me that way I would have been very blunt with you.

At level 38 you know full well that key spawns are up for everyone.

  • So if your standing in front of a door and you have a key (other than the doors) plus key potion could it be set that the key changes to the one in the current location? I think this would sort out the "I'm waiting for a key" issue  and may adjust prices on the auction site as well.  And lets , if we do it that way, make the key must be used within ...3-5 min  so it doesn't flood the Auction site with hard to get keys.

  • This key is selling for 600c in auctions today.  Relative to the value of access to AB and Neva Neva and the value of ten minutes of one's time, that's not very much.  I don't think there is a problem with availability at all, just with different mores about key allocation/grabbing/camping.  The mores thing isn't really something we can resolve further than knowing these different ideas about fairness will happen with any open resource and anticipating the reactions of other players and trying to get along.
Posted 11 months ago by Zauberberg Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Is it just me or, at this point, is getting the AB/NN key more about the rush of grabbing something that we've been conditioned to feel has value? I mean, there was a time when AB was the place to be, when the keys sold for a ton, and when people camped for them FOREVER.  Now, not only has the thrill of AB worn off for a lot of people, the keys can be purchased much less expensively and 90% of the time when I go thru a door drink door it goes to AB so I don't need a key.  I literally have a small stack of AB keys at my house that I've picked up if I happened to be passing a spawn spot and nobody is there.  I use them occasionally but, given the things mentioned above, not all that often.  In fact, I usually just give them away if I see someone waiting to get into AB/NN.  Nevertheless, there's still something about seeing that key just sitting there..all alone..waiting for someone to take it.

Yes, It sucks when u wait for a key and someone else TP's in. That being said, the keys are pretty easy to come by now. I've only ever had a problem with the "TP in and swipe" when I wait, they come take, i wait, they come take, etc etc (there are some people who tp in for every key and are gone before u can say a word).  Even that isn't WRONG in terms of game rules..just frustrating.  FWIW, I don't deal with that frustration anymore because I stopped waiting for the keys :)

  • Ten minutes is a long time to stand there waiting so one tends to do something such as mediatate, make earthshakers, etc.  This gives a passerby or a deliberate teleporter the opportunity to grab the key.  This is allowed and although it seems unfair and mean, there is nothing wrong with doing this.  It would just a bit mean or rude or whatever you want to call it.  OTOH, the person who tele'd in may have been trying for that key for days or weeks or whatever, so he set a tele point to have a better chance at getting it.  That's OK too, in fact, smart.  Popular keys are hard to get.  All you can do is wait or purchase from the Auction.

BTW, just to demonstrate my advanced age and ignorance (yes it is stupid), I am unfamiliar with the song and if he had said that to me I would have thought he was making a pass and have gotten even madder.

  • I have snatched the key out from under multiple AFK campers more than once, and they never even wake up.  I don't get this at all - if you're going to camp, DO IT.   I don't interfere with people who are actively waiting for the key, but people who think they can show up and go AFK and pick up the key the next time they decide to switch away from the newspaper and check for it are making a pretty big assumption, one that other players aren't obliged to agree to.

  • There's nothing rude about taking an item which has spawned.  It belongs only to the person who picks it up first, not the person sleeping near it, or the person waiting for it to spawn, or the person who knows when it will spawn and teleports in to get it.  Yes, it might be "nice" to give things to people nearby, but no one should force charity on anyone else.  There's also nothing inherently bad about selling a key or another item at auction.
