Sell Glitch Character

I'm thinking about selling my Glitch character. Is this allowed? Has anyone else done this? Would anyone be interested in buying my character?

I have a lot of items. I have almost every skill learned (still have a few more to learn).

  • Selling for real money? If so that usually isn't allowed by most companies.

  • I doubt that's permissible. Is there any MMO that does allow you to sell characters for real money?

  • In the Terms of Service, read the section entitled, "Items have no Real World Value."

  • @glum pudding
Actually the relevant section is below that section.

    Intellectual Property Rights

Service Content, Software and Trademarks: You acknowledge and agree that the Service contains content that is protected by intellectual property and other proprietary rights and laws (including graphics, artwork, music, choreography, characters, avatars, Items and/or other items acquired or created in the Service). Except as expressly authorized by Tiny Speck, you agree not to modify, copy, frame, scrape, rent, lease, loan, sell, distribute or create derivative works based on the Service or such content, in whole or in part (except that the foregoing will not apply to your User Content, as defined below, if any). The Service (including the Software, the API and such content) is intended solely for playing purposes and for your personal use. Any use of the Service other than as specifically authorized herein is not allowed.

  • Not really sure who would buy somebody else's character anyway, tbh... unless it's a fleecing-the-stupid scenario, I guess.

  • I'll start the bidding at 11 currants.
Posted 10 months ago by Doctor Yum Yum Subscriber! | Permalink
  • oh. I hadn't noticed that you weren't a subscriber with all those wonderful subscriber clothes. In light of that fact I would prefer to retract my previous offer and start the bidding at 4 currants, but if, under the legal mechanizations of the world we currently inhabit my previous offer is binding, then so be it and my original perhaps overly generous offer of 11 currants will stand.

And please have your people call my people to explain the transfer of your soul etc.

  • I wouldn't call a user account a 'derivative work.'  That would be making plush cubimals, or wallpapers or screen savers, posters, etc.  based on the in-game art.

But I've deleted accounts with a higher level that that one.  It isn't really 'worth' anything.

These are the pertinent lines in that quote:

  • I dont think the glitch staff would allow that but if they do, and its not being sold for real money (i'm in a deep financial hole at the moment) I would like to buy your character
Posted 10 months ago by ShadowChik Subscriber! | Permalink
  • well if this is allowable you'll have to somehow top my offer of 11 currants from the depths of your financial hole.

  • If they're selling their character, that would be in essence selling their account.  As they would not own the account anymore, I don't see why they would be taking payment in currants.  This means they're either asking real world money or for payment to be given in currants to an alt account, i would think.

Either way, I'm gonna pass. Aside from some questionable rule adherence, I basically made it to level 21 in the blink of an eye--not seeing any real personal up side to this purchase.
Posted 10 months ago by Soupie♨ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The reason this type of thing usually isn't allowed in MMOs is that you're essentially renting your character and items and time from the company.  Everything in the game world still belongs to Tiny Speck.  That allows game developers to keep control of their intellectual property, and stops third-parties (such as goldfarmers in most games) who would very much like to make a lot of money off selling characters/items/currency from doing so legally.

Be very careful because in most cases, offering the sale of a character or account on a game's official forums can be grounds for a ban.

  • If accounts can indeed be bought and sold. I will offer one button, some lint from the bottom of my pocket, a polite note, and most importantly;  a smile- you will have to pay for the postage though...

  • The game is a sandbox game.  'Playing' is a very open-ended verb in that context.

As others have obviously said, 'selling' an account with anything in-game would be a little ridiculous.

Except...  people can have multiple accounts.  An 'account' is a separate entity from a 'player.'

But BZZZT then a player is selling an account to benefit themselves as a player operating their whole constellation of accounts.

There's an obvious existential dilemma there, I suppose.  Are YOU your primary glitch character, or is that glitch character just a creation you have produced?  (I feel sorry for anybody who has invested that much of themselves in 'being real' here- don't you have a real world to participate in?)

Ultimately, 'you' are not your 'account.'  Until such a thing is enforced, and it is not at present, there is considerable leeway there.  'You' are not a part of 'the community' (I know I am supposed to get all reverent while referring to the sacred and glorious 'community' here)  Each of your characters is part of 'the community' and they can all have their own varying standing within said community.  We can be as real as we want in each instance we play within.  We can have 'loving, caring generous' altruist characters and scurrious villains side by side if we like.

If Tiny Speck thinks this is bad and wants to flush us all out into 'reality' in a one-account 'what you do in the game will be YOU' fashion, the way Facebook does (which is quite possible, it depends on how they plan to monetize the characters we develop for sale to whomever they decide to sell them to- advertisers, data miners, etc., since it's ludicrous to think they have invested double-digit millions of V.C. dollars in a game and expect to get their return from us to 'subscribing' for baubles and vanity points) then that is TS's prerogative to do so.  They haven't yet.  But to pretend that the player base isn't their oyster to crack when the time is right is a little silly.

    We'll see.

  • Well, from the comments, it seems that it's not permissible. Just thought I'd ask. Thanks y'all.
Posted 10 months ago by B1ff Subscriber! | Permalink
  • More to the point, it doesn't make sense.  It's the experience of Glitch that is worthwhile.  You can't buy the experience.
Posted 10 months ago by WalruZ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yeah, selling your character/account for real world money is definitely not allowed, but giving it away for free might be ok...
Posted 10 months ago by Shepherdmoon Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I don't really see the point, anyway.  Being a high-level character is boring.  Maybe if TS ever introduces more levels or more to do at upper levels...
Posted 10 months ago by Tradescantia Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Agreed on it not making sense. In a game like World of Warcraft there are things that are difficult or impossible to do until you have certain items or reach certain levels. Glitch has a skill tree that puts some limits on what you can do, but skills can be acquired almost entirely through time -- just check in every now and then and click on a new skill.

As others have noted, the game is actually less fun at higher levels. The skill quests drive most of the "play", so if you've achieved them then you're selling a less fun experience. At my level all that's left to do (other than socialize and do silly/fun things with others that can be done at any level) is grinding stuff for achievements.

What positive thing does someone get from buying your character?

  • To clarify things: selling your avatar for real world money is not allowed.
Posted 10 months ago by Blanky Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Hmmm. With that in mind, if you created an alt and played it with no interaction at all from your main, would it be within the rules to sell it for currants? Say an older player wanted to completely start over with a new account and sell their old one (for in-game money only).

  • Granted the game is awesome but one other point --- its still in BETA !

  • What about cross site exchanging?
On many sites I play, mainly pet sites, they allow cross site trading, as long as the other site reciprocates (they also allow it). Glitch does not allow it, however they do not not allow it. If the Terms or Service or whatever were reworded to specifically allow it, many multisite players would be happy.

Basically, you could trade currants here for the currency there (no realmoney stuffs are allowed). You can trade currants for items there, and items there and here. Basically.

Sometimes accounts are sold. Basically the deal is made - items, currency, whatever. Say I want to quit Glitch, but have this awesome account. I could discuss with Person 1 on another site that allows crosssite trading and we would agree that he could give me 100k of whatever currency there, theses 10 pets, and this uber rare item. I would give them my account password stuff, done.

Maybe I want to start over. I would sell my account, maybe to somebody who's never played before, want a better account, or something. I would make a new account, they would pay me there, or on the other site, and bam. Usually, there's a small time frame on which I am allowed to have constant access to two accounts (two weeks?).

  • Being in beta means it's kinda hard to get in if you want to start playing. That's the best reason I can find why someone might be willing to purchase a low-level account.
Posted 10 months ago by Vic Fontaine Subscriber! | Permalink
  • why would anyone want someone elses account? It would take "the game" out of the game. A big chunk of glitch is the quests. If you get an account which is a higher level then you would miss out on so much. I mean, no-one wants an account purely to go mining etc..

I can understand wanting currents and in game items, but, for this game, I doubt anyone would want an played account.

However, saying that, I will match Hone Bears generous offer, but I shall also throw in one grain.

  • Hey, if TinySpeck allows this, why should we care? There are games where ppl sell characters and games where ppl don't. It is not a moral issue, is it? I am pretty sure that on WOW you can buy for USD a paladin with lots of skills. In Glitch, for me, the difference is that going up through lower levels is a lot of fun, while in some games it is moronic drudgery.

I love you Glitch! But there are ppl who love you in different ways from the way I love you. I can imagine somebody who wants to play Glitch but wants to try out a high-level character. Or maybe somebody who doesn't know how much fun it is to be a low-level glitchen, and how generous high-level glitchen are to the low-level glitchen.

No more martinis for me tonight. But although I don't want to buy a new avatar, if I were the super-brass at TS, I would let ppl sell their avatars if they wanted to. If you don't want to buy a new avatar yourself, no harm no foul. But why be irked with a person who is wondering about selling one? I don't buy strawberry milkshakes or viagra, but it is not a moral issue for me that some other ppl really really REALLY want to buy that stuff.

  • People who sell cool items and so forth on online games generally ruin the experience for everyone. "Huh. I could spend two weeks hunting and camping to get this cool jacket, or I could just pay $5 - like those other three guys - and get it straight away." Glitch isn't like that. High-level characters don't have more fun than low-level ones. All you get by buying a character is that you miss out on fun quests and things. I've considered restarting just to do everything from scratch again. So why would people start buying characters?

  • I suggest that TS "officially" disallow selling of accounts -- skipping past the content that is in the game leaves a rather hollow experience. But it is not something worth trying to police.

The only real challenge to starting a Glitchen is getting BL5 soon enough (I have 3 toons, so quite experienced with the early content!)

  • Selling/buying accounts does impact everyone. For instance, allowing people to sell/buy accounts encourages hackers to gain control of as many accounts as possible. It also makes it difficult to 'prove' an account is really yours - any hacker can simply claim that you sold them the account.

For most sites, the original owner is considered the only valid owner. This makes abuse/support cases much easier to deal with. I certainly hope that this is the case for Glitch, as well.

  • I think we all need more information on your character. I, for one, know nothing of your distinctive mental and moral qualities, your strengths and originality, or your reputation.

If you could please post a detailed written statement on your attributes and provide references, I think it would help everyone make a more informed decision on whether they want to be you.

  • Did you all miss the post in this thread where Blanky did say, quite definitively, that selling is NOT allowed?

  • "Did you all miss the post in this thread where Blanky did say, quite definitively, that selling is NOT allowed?"

I missed the point in the TOS where it said that casual comments by employees of T.S. in Forum Threads are retroactively part of the TOS.

Face it.  Not everybody reads the Forums.  It is not a requirement laid out in the TOS that all players regularly read the forums and follow rules that are casually dropped into threads as The Law in the game.

If a rule is part of The Law, it needs to be properly included in the body of the TOS.

  • Skojie Joe- Blanky's response was not casual; this is not "retroactive" information. We make it clear in the TOS that selling content in the game is disallowed: "...content or information included in the Service to any user or other third party, including on Internet auction sites (e.g., eBay) or in return for anything of value (including "real" money) or otherwise."

Your account that you create, is considered content. You cannot sell it for anything of value, including real money. You also agreed to the security of your account, which means keeping your password and login confidential. If you transfer your account, you have compromised that confidentiality and are in breach.

"Member Account, Username, Password and Security: You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your password, username and account, and for all activities conducted through your account."
