Assist credit on street building

I would like some sort of credit of selling items which are then purchased and used for street projects. I assume some people do what I do and don't hang around street projects, but are more than happy to sell the items needed to complete them.

Does Glitch even have the mechanics to track such an action?

  • Nope. Right now you just get In-Your-Mind-Good-Karma points. I have tons of those! :D

  • I get the desire, but i don't see how it would get figured out and calculated in any sane way (or rather that there wouldn't be too many loopholes to not confuse or upset people).

Scenario 1: I sell 6 mortar barnacles. they are bought and donated to a project as is
Scenario 2: I sell 6 mortar barnacles. they are bought and then crushed and donated to a project as talc
Scenario 3: I sell 6 mortar barnacles. they are bought and combined with 1 more + 7 energy sucking fireflies and donated as a crystal

Should I get credit in all these scenarios? And what portion of the credit should I "steal" from the person donating them?

Redo each scenario and have the donation part be 4 days after the purchase rather than the 1 or 10 minutes that you were probably thinking.

  • I think that you should get credit if you GIVE rather than sell.

  • You shouldn't get any credit. The person's choice to donate to the project was completely independent of your choice to give/sell your materials for them. You shouldn't be praised if someone stops a robbery with your gun, why should you get credit for something somebody else did with your materials?

If you want credit, donate the materials on your own!

  • My point is sometimes I have the items needed for a project, but I am nowhere near the project. I would happily give someone the items, but there isn't currently a system in place for this.

RG, the decision of someone to donate is not completely independent of my choice to give/sell materials to them, if it was, why is the help chat filled with people requesting items be put up for auction when there is a street project going on?

I understand you can say the currants you receive for selling the items are in lieu of credit, but I feel most players who are heavily involved in street projects, whether donating things directly or assisting those who are donating, have been playing long enough that currants are no longer an issue. I for one have 30,000 currants and no real need for them, since I already own a house and own (and am able to make,) any tool.

  • The only way I could endorse credit for donating to a project without being the actual donor is if I were a participant in the equivalent of a bucket brigade.
A Quest in which several glitchers set up in a relay of teleportations to donate required items to a far-off project; everyone in the brigade shares a portion of the credit, in this instance equally.

Recently building permits were required. I was close enough to go to the Bureaucratic Hall, I then traded the permit to dantheman who in turn, delivered the permit to the project. I didn't get credit and certainly didn't expect any. I sold him the permit.. and even if I had given it to him, I would have been operating with Good Karma in mind.

  • But, Zaphod, the issue of right-place-right-time adds challenge to any game. The intention to get a headshot doesn't get a headshot; getting the right aim and the right timing do. Similarly, WANTING to donate materials shouldn't be the only factor in donating the materials; if you want to donate them and get credit, you should donate them and get credit. Involving others and keeping track of a complicated economy based on "good intentions" is difficult, and I don't see how it benefits the gameplay.

tl;dr you should get credit only for directly doing the work, not for indirectly inciting the work to be done.

  • yeah...there are way too many scenarios for this to be possible. It would be far too difficult to monitor the trades that later led to the contribution to a street project.

  • I was unable to 'help' with several of the street projects, not having learned the correct skills yet... but I still managed to do what I could. I've not got a bunch of money, nor have I logged a boatload of game time... so from a lower level perspective they are still very much doable. The best part... I got to make a bunch of new friends, and go on search parties for more stuff.

I think the participation system is perfect the way it is. Even is I was only able to get in one or two consentrates, or donate my 10 ingots... I was still able to help out. I don't buy the right-place right-time thing either. There were enough projects in each area that lasted long enough, anyone and everyone had time to get to them. The needs were well communicated (as pointed out), so it was a personal choice if you walked the items down and got your 'credit' or sold them at auction. Given the limited number of Trophies, I imagine more opportunity to be one of the Top 3 Contributors will arise as people get bored.

One interesting way to handle some of this would be to make certain tasks off limits to the higher level players... or flipping the difficulty of the requirements. Start the project with a thing only higher level folks can do, make the Stage 4 have a section that can only be worked by young players. By putting that piece at the end, you've given it time to generate interest and gather enough young to get the job done.

  • I was just thinking giving credit for a project assist (just like in basketball and hockey,) would make sense, otherwise the only reasons to put something on auction, especially something you can only buy, like honey, would be for intangible karma or for profit.

I know I don't look at who is selling the auctions I purchase, so I don't think there is much karma to be gained through auctions, so really the current set up is ripe for price gouging. I think some sort of an assist credit would encourage more people to auction items needed for street projects which would make it more difficult to price gouge.

  • +1 to Travinara. I like the idea of making street projects more multi-tiered, e.g. only newbs could donate things like honey or oats, or contribute some hoe-work.

  • What we need is the ability to set and use more than one teleportation point.

  • More teleporting skills are coming.

  • fwiw, I see auctioning project supplies at high prices not as price gouging, but rather basic supply & demand type economics, and just the kind of thing that gives the game a bit more complexity & depth across various play styles. Also, what everybody else said about feasibility. I think projects have been rather frustrating lately because there has been fewer going at any one time, so you get more competition, and that just adding more available projects will address the problems people have been having in a much more simple way than mapping auction sales to project use.

  • They're not high prices if nobody's selling for lower.

  • There's really no way we could track "assists" for project contribution. HOWEVER, maybe (later, later) we could give contributors a little token or something when they contribute which they could then pass on to someone who was helping them which would give a share of the rewards (a "tip" for those radiating energy, or bringing crafting materials, etc.)

  • That seems fair.

  • another complication to all this is what about someone who is auctioning food or beverage that workers might buy to keep going? do they all deserve credit? or are they just auctioning off their surplus food? even if they are just cleaning house, who's to say they deserve less credit than the guy that sells his peat to the cause with intent? I believe your cash is compensation. I also believe credit for the project is the reward for doing the footwork yourself. If I'm gonna buy something and walk over and donate it, I'm gonna take the credit for that - even if I didnt do the gathering work, I earned those currants I just spent. And if you take my currants, I'm taking the spotlight. You have my personal thanks for your business transaction. That is all.
The token idea is interesting. I think maybe the top 10 contributors could get a token or 2 to give to the players that helped them out the most (these would be given to the contributor with their reward at the end of each project phase) to be handed out atthe discretion of the contributor. They could be equal to the contributors reward of $, xp, or energy and mood, recipient's choice.
