Extremely consequential poll of vital importance

When crop/herb gardening, do you go down the line with one action at a time, or do you do everything for each plot before moving on to the next plot? That is, do you go harvest/clear/harvest/clear/harvest/clear, or harvest/harvest/harvest/clear/clear/clear? Same with watering and planting (though obviously the order changes depending on if the soil is damp or not).

I do harvest/clear/harvest/clear/harvest/clear, but I also do water/water/water/water/plant/plant/plant/plant. The result of this extremely scientific and significant study will help me optimize my gardening technique according to the generally preferred method, which I think we can all agree is something that would provide diverse benefits to the entire Glitchian community.

  • This is my routine: harvest/clear/... /harvest/clear/water/water/... /water/plant/plant/... /plant

Of course the watering and planting become reversed if the soil is still moist.

  • Harvest harvest harvest clear clear clear plant plant plant water water water, and it IRKS me that the cursor finishes with the bottom row and then jumps to the top left. Why doesn't it start at the top left, huh?

  • LOL - now this is the Glitchy stuff I love.

My routine:  harvest/clear/harvest/clear and then water/plant/water/plant (if soil is dry - which it usually is because I'm a bad gardenerererererer) :-P

  • Totally agree with Sirentist.

  • I harvest all crops, then clear, then plant, then water.  It just seems more efficient to do all of one step first, then move to the next step, and the next, and the final one.

  • @Sirentist Oh my Giants seriously it is the most annoying. Start at the origin, darn it!

  • Harvest all, Clear all, Plant all, Water all [and sometimes Fertilize all].
Every once in a while I try to do all actions to one plot before moving on, but it feels wrong. Like writing with my left hand.

  • On a (somewhat) related note, I always stand on the left side of the garden when I interact with it. Didn't realize I always did this until just recently, when I accidentally interacted with it from the right side and was shocked to see my hoe going the WRONG WAY.

  • @ Sirentist
Now that you've mentioned it, I do stand on the left side of the garden also.
Posted 6 months ago by Mal'akh Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @ Mal'akh, whatever you do, don't stand on the other side! I was totally disoriented for, like, SECONDS. Or at least a second. Okay maybe just a half-second before the laughter kicked in. But it was a PAINFUL half-second.
Posted 6 months ago by Sirentist Subscriber! | Permalink
  • LOL Sirentist, I stand to the left, too. And my harvesting/clearing routine changes from day to day...

  • I usually harvest/clear/harvest/clear  water/plant/water/plant or plant/water/plant/water. Sometimes I do it one at a time though, just depends on my mood.

  • I take care of each plot individually (so, harvest clear water plant or plant water). I usually stand on the right side of the bed. And I consider my "origin" the...uh, the one towards the player and farthest from my Glitch. But I don't really care where it goes from there.

  • Harvest all, clean all, water all and then plant all. Rarely do I add guano but when I do, I double fertilize each plant before moving on to the next.

  • I complete each plot before moving on - Harvest, Tend, Plant, Water. NEXT! Harvest, Tend, Plant, Water and so on!

I stand to the right of my beds and harvest from left to right. :)

  • i harvest all, clear all, plant all (when i have enough seeds) and watter all if needed. i use enter and right arrow only, so bottom line is the first, goes to top line and then the central.
ages ago, i thought there could be some difference between behaviors and how we get the drops or how it could be done faster, but since we have so much to do i told myself not to worrie about it and had a deeply conversation about random stuff with the hoe... hmm, forgot to take notes about that convo... or... maybe it was not that deep... :)

  • In a clockwise fashion, starting from the top left and moving towards the center, I clear first, then water, then plant.
Posted 6 months ago by rorschach Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I harvest each plot, in tidy rows and then I clear and water, clear and water, clear and water.  Then, I plant, plant plant!

I used to do each step for one plot, then move on and do all the next steps for plot two, then move on to plot three and do every step.

I didn't like the rhythm, something to do with the timing.  But, my new way seems to flow nicely.  If there is a bigger lag than usual, I'll do all the harvesting and then run away,  saving clearing and watering for a better time.

  • Harvest, Clear, Water, Plant.  I don't usually come in often enough to harvest part of a garden.  If I do come and only part is ready, the same routine applies.  I usually work from left to Right.  Most of the time I do each step for the whole garden but I occasionally vary and do all of the steps for each line one at a time.

I find gardening tiresome and time consuming and try to get done with it first thing.  I have only two 15 plot gardens but I still feel like I spend way too much time doing it.  Yes, I could just not do it but then how would I get that Herb badge.  besides, I need to make currants and iMG some way and mining is even more tiresome and boring.  sigh

  • I harvest harvest harvest, clear, water, clear, water, clear, water, plant plant plant.
And instead of going by row, I go up and down the columns.
Good luck with your research of great importance!

  • Sirentist! I had no idea I could make my hoe go the wrong way. I shall try immediately.

I usually do harvest/harvest/harvest/clear/clear/clear if I'm multitasking and don't have the luxury of looking at my screen (ie, while real-life cooking). I always hypothesized the other method was faster if you can monitor the precise correct moment to enter the next command.

  • I usually do harvest/clear for all spots, then plant/water. Partly it's because dealing with the "gardening is a leisure activity" BS is easier two actions at a time and partly because I generally rotate the crops I plant.

  • i also dress right, so to speak, but tend to do harvest/clear/water/sing to butterfly/lurk on global/race a cubimal/spend two minutes trying to remember what i was doing/plant. one plot a time.
    it works!

  • I bounce all over the place. I try to find something to clear/harvest wherever there is no chicken, piggie, or butterfly in my way.

  • Stand to the left.  Select bottom left plot.  Harvest entire plot by pressing up (this ends up jumping to the end but I don't care).  Clear entire plot.  Water entire plot.

If I get a musicblock I haven't heard yet today at any point, stop to play it immediately.

The people who harvest/clear/water/plant - harvest/clear/water/plant - etc. are agents of the Rook.

  • Harvest the whole crop box, then clear the whole thing, then water, then plant.
Posted 6 months ago by Serra Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Is this a matter of keyboard vs. mouse players?  For mousers, it might make sense to finish one type of task before moving on because it doesn't increase the total number of clicks needed, but for keyboard users, it would quadruple the number of keystrokes required (since navigation through the plot is a separate keystroke than the trigger for the action and you would be navigating to each plot four times rather than once).

I always use the keyboard when gardening so I finish each plot before moving on (so Enter (hold down until harvest, clear, and select seed box comes up), arrow to correct seed, Enter (hold down until watering can shows), arrow to next crop).  I usually play with the sound off and have become an expert at ignoring the 'slow down' message, so your mileage may vary with this technique, but it seems faster to me.
Posted 6 months ago by Tribeca Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I couldn't use my mouse for gardening the amount of clicks would be mad  I just instinctively used the keyboards as it's so quick and smooth to do so.  I harvest all, then clear all, then plant  all, then water if the crop is below 60 -70% - this applies to my back garden.

If I'm on the herb route I'll clear all/plant all/water all by individual crop garden (and pray that no one else comes on the street) HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Posted 6 months ago by ~Arabesque~ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Tribeca: I garden by keyboard, and while I agree with you that it increases the number of keystrokes, I will do harvest/clear/water>harvest/clear/water>etc. then plant>plant>plant>plant because I usually know when my crops are going to be ready and I hate the extra lag between first and last crop fruiting if I've done all the steps at once for one plot at a time (such are the things that my madness drives me unto).

I'll note that I also ensure that I have ONLY the seeds I want to plant that particular session in my bags, so I can run through and one-click plant without breaking rhythm to make sure I'm planting the right thing.  I think I may've thunk this through too much.

  • This is such a Glitchy topic...YAY!...and it's really interesting to see how gardening can be so different for so many of us

I stand to the right of my garden (oddly) and Harvest all, Clear all, Water all, then Plant all...and just for added info, I use my keyboard for almost everything I do in-game, gardening included, as the trackpad on my laptop makes me have to be too precise.

I'm all about working smarter, not harder!
Posted 6 months ago by Abbey Rhode Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I use the exact same method as Big Moss and move up and down the columns. Also have to stand on the left or I'm in my own way. And I hate being in my own way. At least if someone else is in my way I can simply go around them. But I have to work through myself to get out of my own way. Being the leisure activity it is, gardening is perfect for casual philosophizing and self reflection... Hmm, does that mean I should really be standing on the right? *toddles off to the garden to ponder this some more*

Posted 6 months ago by Ygasuasu Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I harvest harvest harvest/clear clear clear, BUT

    Then I plant/water/plant/water/plant/water

I have no idea why, other than I like getting all the harvesting done so then I can see all the plots at once, and not ones hidden behind crops/herbs.

  • I harvest all, clear all, water all (if necessary), plant all by using the keyboard. I usually stand to the right of the garden and have never noticed the hoe thing Sirentist mentioned.

Only exception: when the the lifespan of the garden is down to 1% or 2%. Then I harvest all crops except one, clear and water all and then harvest the last crop which then causes the garden to collapse. Otherwise it collapses right after harvesting the last crop and you lose the chance to gain tasty img by clearing and watering. But maybe that's just me wanting to squeeze the last img from the garden ;-)

  • I harvest, harvest, harvest, hoe, hoe, hoe, water, water, water, then plant, plant, plant.  I tend to be standing in the middle of the bed.  However, it irks me that it startes from bottom left, then goes along the rowing before jumping from bottom right to top left.  Makes no sense IMO.
Posted 6 months ago by Foofala Fury Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The order for the other stuff varies, but I always oo all my planting in one bunch. Otherwise I loose concentration and plant the wrong seeds :(
Posted 6 months ago by Sturminator i` Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I have to stand on the left of the bed too.  Then I harvest everything, not in any special order, just as it comes available.
Then I clear every plot, starting from the top left and going down the rows, then I water in the same order and then plant the same.
Unless I feel like a change and do the rows back-to-front or top-to-bottom for the sheer hell of it!  But I would always do the whole bed, not a plot at a time.
I like to be able to see the whole bed, not stand in front of some of it, and it seems weird not to face it so I do.
