Tree Statistics on the Glitch Resource Database

What do you do when you get your hands on a database with information on all of Glitch's resources, updated in real time? You make data porn, of course! So, fellow Glitchians, I present to you: Tree Statistics, a page that shows the wealth of trees in Ur today. Click on the types of trees or areas you want to explore, or use the red button on the top right hand corner to unfold all of the data.

As Kaylee would say, it's shiny!

  • Beautiful!

Also, fantastic valid HTML 5. I love the clean interface.

  • This is really awesome! Is there any breakdown of data for Paper Trees?

  • Hey Boom and Bust, is there something up with the piggies section? It doesn't seem to be updating. I've seen the same old info on it everytime I go. I'm a Kajuu man myself and I know that Uppama Uplands has at least 3 blocks with over 5 piggies. I can also see that my block is reporting less than there actually are. Just wondering. Thanks!

  • Well done! It is, in fact, very shiny.

  • See kids, those 8 wood trees are worth more than 50 spice trees.

  • Oh man, data porn AND design porn. The HTML5 is beautiful.

ETA: I approve of the meme expand buttons.

  • Wow, it's useful AND gorgeous!

  • This is great, but it would be so much more useful if it included the residential streets. Many, if not most of them, have wood trees (in the regions where they will grow.) This will undoubtedly be used to support the idea that wood trees are "rare." Graphically, it is beautiful and will no doubt be very useful!

  • Bookmarked it and keep going back, how often does it update?

  • *grumbles something about the inaccurate use of "html5" as an umbrella term*
Posted 12 months ago by striatic Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @lilmsSunshine It uses the same data as the main site. If you go to glitch.alwaysdata.com/ you should see a 'Last Updated' time displayed prominently on the top right hand corner

@Audaria If you want that info, simply go back to the home page. You can clearly see there that there are more wood than gas or spice trees (It even used to outnumber egg, though the number dipped recently)

@Rook Well, it assumes you get the maximum 80 planks out of each tree, which is quite unlikely for wood trees in public streets

@striatic Well, it does use the HTML5 doctype, but you're right - there's a lot more CSS3 than anything else really. I didn't even use any of the fancy new tags.

@Odracir I'll ask Linnaea, she's the one who keeps the data updated. I just use it to create shiny things.

  • yeah, CSS3 + jquery != HTML5

    *sigh*

    it does look pretty tho.
Posted 12 months ago by striatic Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Ok! I checked once and it said "8 wood trees" then I clicked again and it said "101 wood trees" This is clearly not a static site! Bravo! (Although I would still really like to see
statistics that include residential streets, just for kicks.)

  • @striatic
The page validates through the W3C as HTML 5
Posted 12 months ago by DUG1138 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • This is fantastic.
Posted 12 months ago by Sparklebooty Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @DUG1138, that is because of the HTML5 doctype used. However, this page would look and work similarly if it had been an HTML4 doctype. striatic was mainly saying how primarily all the cool effects and appearance people see are attributed to HTML5 when it's more so the CSS3 and jQuery. The page does not actually use any of the new HTML5 tags, and would have worked with HTML4.

  • @Audaria The tree stats page counts only public streets, while the main site contains numbers for everything + residential streets. I didn't want to include residential streets because it won't be fair - regions with more residential blocks will be overrepresented, and trees that can't grow in residential blocks (gas, spice) would be underrepresented.

If you saw the numbers drop earlier today, it was because Linnaea was rebuilding the database and it hit a bug which caused residential streets to fail to be entered into the database. Sorry about that.

  • @BnB I'm not arguing with your data, just mad with how there's only a few wood trees.

  • Great design and useful... Thank you! Bookmarked.
Posted 12 months ago by Ooola Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @TomC, I see your point.

However, the site fails to validate as HTML 4.01, Strict or Transitional.

(been doin' this stuff for about 12 years now)

I wonder how many of us are web programmer/designers here? It wouldn't surprise me a bit if there were more of us than average. I love the interface to Glitch and the design of Ur. I'll bet it attracts similar minds.

  • @DUG1138, I see your point, too. I've definitely noticed a lot of programmers/designers as you've said, and I totally agree that the interface and design are really nice. I've rarely seen any browser-ish game like Glitch that put so much extra bits of effort in the meticulous details in user interface.

  • Nice work Boom and Bust!

@TomC FWIW, I've never cared whether a site validates or not with those external tools; I've never seen the point.

  • @Audaria: I feel weird going to residential streets to harvest if I don't own or have keys to a house there.  Just because I can get to a street, doesn't mean I should.  I don't think residential streets should be included in the discussion of how rare trees are.

But that said, with around 700 bean, fruit and bubble trees each vs around 100 wood including residential streets, wood is still relatively rare even if you don't have my weird hang-up about residential streets.

  • Beautiful site; I don't know anything meaningful about HTML but I can note the sneaky typo in Statistical Breakdown by Tree -> Spice Trees: it's to be "Rich Tagine".

  • Hurray we've managed to break the 1% mark for wood trees. Go us.  : )

Well, at least until that handful of wood poisoners make their patrols, but the 1% mark is still a cool milestone. Long live the majestic wood tree, friend to the newbie.

That is a very shiny graphical representation. Well done.

  • Sorry everyone.   I went on XMas vacation, had some serious computer problems, and then had family issues on top of everything.

Seems the damn database collection routine hung up about 20 minutes after I left and stayed that way until I finally logged back in last night.

Fixed now.  I hope this is still a useful site and everyone hasn't given up on me :/

  • I suspect the div/0 issue has to do with the downtime. Give it an hour or two to re-update the counts from the API.

  • I unbrokened it, well, sort of. Did some patching up by switching to data source to flat files (which isn't ideal, but eh...). Resources (Animals, trees, minerals, etc.) work now (except fireflies) on the main site, but no residential data, and everything else is still broken pending Linnaea coming back.
