Updated: Single-click pick up, and... preferences!

1) When you come across an item in the world with "pick up" as the single action you can take, isn't it annoying to have to click it, get the menu, choose "pick up", then choose how many you want to pick up? Well no more is that annoying: now such items can be picked up with a single click! If you feel nostalgic and want to use the menu, just hold down the SHIFT key when you click on the item. And if that is not enough for you...

2) In the player menu you get by clicking your avatar in the top left of the game, please find a new "Preferences" option which opens a simple preferences window. You can turn off the single click to pick up feature! And you can change a few other UI behaviors too. Play with it!

Have fun!

P.S. The COMMA key will open and close the preferences window too.

UPDATE! We've made some changes based on user feedback:

1) Eat/drink verbs no no longer default to "just one" unless you have set the preference for all quantity picker dialogs to default to one. (I know some of you will be all "can't we have separate preference for eat/drink verbs and other verbs?" but we are serious about avoiding preferences creep :)

2) If you hit the ENTER or UP key to start interacting with an item on the ground, you will now always get the normal menu for it — so "single click up pick up" only works if you actually, you know, like, clicked on the item.

3) There is now a "pick up" verb in the menu for furniture items.

P.P.S Just so you know, much of the motivation for the addition of single click pick up is from having watched some user testing and finding our previous 3-clicks-to-pick-up a somewhat arduous task for the hoi polloi.

  • I can't get in game, but I have a question. If there are multiple items in the stack, does the quantity picker still come up, or do you automatically pick up the whole stack?

  • Please can you give us the option to make "all" the default option for all quantity pickers?  So it's like it used to be?

I still hate the  eat/drink one thing,  I don't understand it at all.  It's completely out of synch with all the other quantity pickers and something I don't think I  ever really do

Posted 4 months ago by Pascale Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Muncey Mango: it picks up the whole stack.

Luvi: yes, info mode camera movement is restricted the same as camera mode camera movement. With the eyeballery skill you can look around more.

shhexy corin: we will give it a think.

  • I don't like the single click feature, because I fairly often drop a stack and pick up a particular amount of the item, since I have no other way of splitting stacks (would be happier if we could do that within our inventory). Guess I'll be going to the effort to turn that feature off.
Posted 4 months ago by Shepherdmoon Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Well, could we please have any form of pick up option for furniture? I'm screwed if the furniture isn't on the ground floor some days and I am trying to drag it into my inventory. On bad days I have to hold the item to the far right of my inventory for 30 secs to see if it wants to recognise I want to pick the item up.

  • Oh, and another thing: I can see this being very bad for parties, where people leave stacks of food out. Now the default behavior will be for an individual to take EVERYTHING, without sharing with others. Especially newbies may not realize what they're doing.
Posted 4 months ago by Shepherdmoon Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Cleops: you can go into decorate mode and click on the furniture to get a verb to pick it up, too.

Shepherdmoon Guess I'll be going to the effort to turn that feature off.

Or leave the feature on and use SHIFT click to get the menu on the item when you're trying to split a stack?

Shepherdmoon I can see this being very bad for parties.

Hmmm, yeah. We'll give that a think too.

  • Eric, I understand that the shift-click feature is there, but I don't really like having to do that.
Posted 4 months ago by Shepherdmoon Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm with  shhexy corin on that one...I've lost so much iMG due to "eat one" being the default.

@ Shepherdmoon - I did that the other day (picked up a whole batch of hooch at a party), tho mine was because my mouse needs a new battery and has taken to clicking ultra-fast (double, triple clicks with one click)...very embarrassing lol

  • I would really, really like to be able to pick up individual items with a single click -- but I had to turn off the "one click" feature due to the way it works with stacks.  When I'm using a mouse, it's often because I'm multi-tasking and don't have two hands available for things like "shift-click."

When I'm not multi-tasking, I prefer to use the keyboard. With "one click" turned on, the "Enter" key picks up entire stacks -- and, as far as I can tell, there is no keyboard equivalent to "shift-click."

I hope TS will give this design some further thought.

  • Shepardmoon - you can split stacks by dropping a few and then dragging them from the floor to a new slot.

  • Mostly, I really like this!

I have one case where I almost wish I didn't have a pick-up option at all.  Icons.

When I go for a round of reflecting, it turns out that even with icons blabbing about whether or not they need tithing, I still accidentally pick one up on a fairly regular basis.  This happens when it needs tithing and I don't have enough money.  I'd rather have the icon stay right where I put it, and get some kind of warning after I've clicked on it, because sometimes it's silent before I walk up to it, or I'm just moving so quickly through my yard that I'm not really paying attention.

  • ok i just tried it with guano harvesting and this is SO MUCH BETTER.  i quit carrying my allspices because i was afraid i would select feed all, which is easy to do if you're in a hurry and especially if there is a lag. now i can collect guano really fast.  i harvested 150 guano in just minutes.  and if i accidentally click on allspices, i have the default set to only one so i lose just one spice instead of 5000.  I feed the bats one hard bubble and get back one guano.  with the one click pickup it's really fast. i just hit the return button and i speed pick-up the guano off the ground.  thanks for the improvement.  please don't let anyone talk you into changing it back to the way it was!

  • I do not like the single click/hit enter pickup.  I prefer to use the keyboard for my actions.  I like being able to pick up X of something, and it seems just as long/complicated to pick up all of something and then drop X of something instead of just - picking up X of something.  I'll definitely be turning this feature off.  Thank you for giving me the option to turn it off!

  • Sorry TS but I highly dislike this new feature. This is not a convenience but an inconvenience.
Thank the Giants I can change the preferences.

Why on Ur did you change this? Was there that many people who were annoyed that they had the option to pick up only a few items of the stack? Maybe I'm missing something here.

Do you have some kind of count as to how many have this turned on vs. how many have this turned off?
Posted 4 months ago by Eye Wonder Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I will turn it off too.  There are some inconveniences with it and I have no problems now.  that may be because I am used to the way it has been so far.  Also, I certainly have no need to add "Shift" to anything.  I do like having the new preferences options though - Thanks!

  • Be careful with the option on I did not know it was on by default.... Shucked every stack of herbs that I had placed when I went to move them and clicked quikly like I was used too....Luckily I use or sell all the seeds I made. But some people might not want to shuck everything an end up with over 700 seeds like I did.

  • I like having less context menus when they aren't needed. They don't always load quickly (sometimes not at all) and if all I want to do is pick something up, it's a little frustrating to have to wait for the menu to open. All in all (in conjuction with the new info-mode), I'm pleased with these changes--including the option to remove them.
Posted 4 months ago by Bradamus Prime Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I love having the options to set things the way it's most comfortable for me to play - but I'd still love to have the option to change the default setting from "eat/drink one" to "eat/drink all" (hint hint ;-D)

  • Shepherdmoon I can see this being very bad for parties.

Thanks.  It really isn't so great in the party atmosphere so it's nice to know it's being thought about :):)

  • Thanks eric.

My theory is that you can never waste more than one item, as it will only let you eat/drink as many as it takes to get you to full mood/energy.  That doesn't seem like an important enough reason to have such an inconsistency in the quantity picker. Everything I do is "all" or "some other quantity",  nearly always all...  Do people really do so many singular things?
(I guess so, since you've made it an option, maybe I'm an odd player! :))

If I want to do 1, hitting 1 on the keyboard and Enter is about as quick as moving to the right a bit and clicking.

  • To address the single item vs. whole stack choice for parties, would it be possible to allow the rock, butler, or gnomes to enforce 'house rules' in private areas?  Perhaps personal preferences like this could be set by each glitch and apply to their street and public areas, but over-ridden inside an otherwise owned structure similar to how files and folders can inherit hierarchical attributes in a filesystem.  Before throwing a party, you could tell your butler how large of a stack guests could pick up, forcing everyone to be dainty or promoting bacchian levels of consumption.
    Thoughts?

Aside, thank you to you and the devs at large for the additional options to play with.

  • @Eric - I don't get an option to pick up furniture in decorate mode or I wouldn't have asked for it and so I thought maybe I just couldn't see it but then I asked on Live Help and others don't get the option either.

Could other people confirm if they can see the verb option to pick up furniture?

I have double checked in IE, Chrome and Firefox and the only options I get are Set Sale Price, Flip and Change Style. If the furniture is not upgraded in any way I get the additional option to Open.

It would be super if this could be added as an option, thanks

  • I do not see a verb option for picking up furniture, even when I go into decorate mode.  The only way I know to pick up furniture is by dragging it into my inventory. I agree that it would be nice to have a verb option for this.

In addition, it would be fantastic if the preferences could be expanded to provide some of the other options players have mentioned, including the option to have "one click" always pick up a single item rather than an entire stack. However, I do appreciate what's been added. With "Preferences," it's pretty easy to turn "one click" on and off.  Mostly I'm keeping it off, but it will be useful to turn it on in some situations such as the guano harvesting scenario mentioned above. Also, the new options for quantity pickers are very helpful.

  • When picking up an item that is lying on and that only has the choice of 'pickup' in the first menu, skipping that first menu makes sense and is a good time saving. But skipping the quantity picker is just horrible, what was the reasoning behind that change? Why shouldn't I be allowed to decide how many of something I want to pick up?

If there's a whole bunch of different things piled together there is now no way for me to pick up part of the stack of one of those items (unless it happens to be at the front). I can't shift-click on it because there's too much crap in the way. I can hit enter to bring up the menu of all the items and choose the one I want (which is how I commonly play) but then I pick up the whole stack, no quantity picker. As an example of when this is annoying, if there's a bunch of items piled on my street for people to take they can only take all or nothing of each one. Or, I store my seeds piled up next to my garden to save space in my bags but now I can't pick up a few to plant because  of all the pigs in the way, I have to pick up all of one of them, plant some then drop the rest. How tedious and for what gain?

Even if something is on its own I have to take my hands off the keys and grab my mouse to shift-click so that I get the quantity picker, which is just really annoying and pointless (using the mouse hurts my arms, don't make me do it for no reason).

You've just taken away a useful function for zero gain, please put it back. You can still skip the menu step and go straight to the quantity picker, that would be way more logical.
Posted 4 months ago by shelleycat Subscriber! | Permalink
  • (Oh and I realise I can turn this off, which I have done, but having that gain of skipping the menu step would be really nice whereas skipping the quantity picker too is just bizarre).
Posted 4 months ago by shelleycat Subscriber! | Permalink
  • After thinking it over, I have a modification to my suggestion-

Incorporate this into bureaucratic party permits, with two prices:
    * A cheap price for your street in your imagination (for a duration of 1 game day per permit?)
    * An expensive option for buying preference rights to a street in Ur (technically it's just a bribe to get the bureaucrocs to look the other way for a bit).

    Why this instead?
    1) After the rares sell out, and the game goes open again, there needs to be a semi-constant currant sink to preserve the marketplace game mechanic from inflation.  Attaching a currant cost to a recurring social event (parties) means that it can function as more than a one-time sink.
    2) It fits with the canon behavior of the bureaucratic halls vis-a-vie permitting.  Current party packs could be lumped in, given a separate party permit, or otherwise tied into this mechanic.
    3) Fitting it into the existing structure of Ur will prevent it from seeming tacked-on.  I suspect the Devs have experience with requirement and feature creep from previous, less awesome, jobs.  This avoids setting a menu and UI requirement creep precedent by keeping it out of the rock or butler menu and placing it with the less-used bureaucratic hall options.
