What do you usually donate?

I've only started recently and learned that BL3 requires the Lem Emblem. Having never donated much since starting, I was wondering if it would still be worth trying to donate stuff early in the game. What do you guys usually donate and what would you recommend using for donations?

  • Early on before I got all my emblems I was just donating random things I picked up along the way (gems, various gifts from trees and animals, especially musicblocks), but now I have worked out that with EHSP I can donate just 20 Flaming Humbabas to get 1008 favor which is enough for me per day. Knocked over two days off of Better Learning V so far :D (of course this only works if you're making them yourself; if you are buying them it is probably very uneconomical and expensive).

  • Donations are good in general.  If nothing else, the emblems you get are a once-daily influx of XP, energy and mood.  The sooner you can get them, the more that 36 xp a day will matter.  Plus, donations themselves are an excellent source of XP - roughly 3 XP per 10 currants of value donated.

Myself, I usually donate caterpillars, since they're relatively low energy and have simple requirements to make.  (I'll point out that caterpillars and butterfly eggs are really inexpensive at auction at the moment.)   Glitches who mine a lot tend to donate the gems they get as bonuses, and likewise Musicblocks tend to be common donations.  Both are high value and have little (or complicated) value otherwise.  But, both require relatively high levels of the related skills to get on any kind of regular basis, and a lot of grinding to get enough of to be worthwhile.

  • Oh, and just for you FYI:

1 favor = 10 currants base value.  (At the moment, there's no variation on this that I'm aware of.)
    1 favor =~ 3xp when donated.
1 favor = 10/7/5 seconds when spent on skill learning. (Primary/secondary/other)

  • Hey this is great information! Thank you for sharing it! I am relatively new (level 15) so I've been donating a lot of mining stuff like rocks and ore and all that. Oh and yeah, definitely music blocks...

  • I still do this for donating, especially since I got crystallography (gives you random favor points): making crystals.

  • I just recently got first favor emblem with every giant and I did it entirely from
    1. Gems obtained in the outback
    2. Musicblocks as random reward drops which I already had one of in my collection
    3. Blocks of peat - it's very easy to get a lot of peat very quickly and it always rewards at a rate of at least one favor per block

Most other items are too valuable to me for one reason or another to donate; fortunately, the only reason I cared about favor was to unlock all the skills, so I'm done with all that now :)

  • I find stack of simple recipes, like fried noodles. and captured piggies to be among the most economical, in terms of energy/currants spent vs favor gained.  A stack of 20 fried noodles is worth about 100 favor, and only costs around 120 energy and 80 currants(for rice) or about 140 energy(planted rice) to make.  Better yet, make a couple extra and you recover all that energy easy.

EDIT:  Made a mistake.  They stack to 20, but I usually donate 40 at a time, so all those figures are for 40.

  • I just donate meat.  It's readily available in enormous quantities (well, it is if you have a lot of Animal Kinship), and since each meat is worth 1 favour, it's easy to calculate the exact right amount to donate.  Combined with some shrine powder, it only takes me a few minutes to gather enough for an emblem or max learning time reduction.

I also keep a "donations and doubles" bag, which usually fills up with music boxes pretty quickly.  I drop those in when I only need a little more favor here or there, for when I'm learning a small skill or if I've already collected a lot of favour.  No need to waste some shrine powder on that.

  • Mostly gems that I get from mining.  If you can afford to buy snocones (or  re lucky enough to get one in Jujuland) the purple snocone gives many XP pts.EHSP triples favor pts, FHSP dobles them.

  • During Beta I donated a lot of Music Blocks and Gems.  Now I seldom gget Music blocks and have yet to collect a whole set so I have only donated 2 or 3.  I also used to donate Gems but those have been very scarce (don't have enough Mining skills yet) and I have not donated any.  I donate Lem Burgers to Lem just "Because".

I was so poor for so long that I did not donate a thing and still got the Emblem of Lem.  I think I was Lev. 15 before I made my first donation since the Reset.  I gathered a lot of Favor quoins in the Ancestral Lands and also apparently did things that made the Giants happy.

  • @genbeeb: Does having crystallography give you random favor points? In what form/context? I had it for a long time during beta and made many crystals but never got any unexpected favor, as far as I am aware. I've been wondering what "the giants sometimes favor those with this skill" meant!

  • Lately I've stayed in Illmenskie Deep mining mostly Beryls and as many Sparkly Rocks (each beryl = 0.6 favor, each sparkly = 0.8 favor) as I could find. I would stay on the map with the Giant that I needed to donate to (i.e. if I needed to get an Emblem of Tii, I would mine on that map).

I was able to get 8 emblems in about 3-4 days, and I didn't play for more than 2 hours each day, so it worked out well (keep in mind that I already had 500-600 favor with each giant due to quests). I tried to avoid the overly populated areas in the Deeps.

    Good luck!

  • Plain crystals are 30 favor points without any shrine powder. Or so it was for me this morning. I'm kinda mined out; I think I'm going to start donating crystals and other stuff to get me through Better Learning V.

  • While only partially related, I created a new interface for shrines (with pretty pictures!) and I'd love for people to give their thoughts and weigh in on the forum post - http://www.glitch.com/forum/ideas/11299/
