Since Glitch went live, I've been homeless. I'm level 27 and have more than enough currants to buy any house I want, but I've grown to appreciate it as an enjoyable play constraint.
During Beta I bought a cute little Pac Man cottage in Groddle Meadow that I filled to the gills with animals, items that I might happen to need for street projects (in most cases, ones that I was never able to get to a project in time), many stacks of basic resources, and a collection of all kinds of random interesting things. My hoarding prevented me from upgrading to a bigger house when they appeared on the market because my brain hurt when I tried to think about packing everything up to move it.
This time around I shied away from buying a house until I could afford "exactly the house I wanted" so that I didn't have to worry about moving. I put all my money into bags, then started grinding for currants. By the time I hit 50k I had gathered a few herb seeds and was dismayed to discover that I couldn't grow herbs in a big house. It also sounded like the most expensive properties were also hazy, which was unappealing. So I decided to wait until a better option emerged.
I've been plodding along for a while longer, broke 100k currants a few days ago, and have gotten to like the idea that I've never owned a house in game. There's something appealingly monk-like about renouncing one's possessions (or at least one's home) and being a permanent wanderer. There's a feeling of freedom - I don't have overwhelming piles of stuff, I don't ever feel like I need to go "home" because my home goes with me, and I don't have to dedicate a teleport slot to my house. I'm able to do almost everything other players can; I'm even working on an icon collection even though I don't have anyplace to set them up.
I have been wishing there was a badge for going homeless for an extended period. (Badges for intentionally constrained play is another interesting topic entirely - consider "teetoller", "vegetarian" or "fruitarian" badges as other examples.)
There's only a few cons to being homeless in Glitch at this point:
- I can't do the "Got Milk?" quest and I can't get the "Homesteader" or "Lanternerer" achievements.
- Gardening achievements are trickier because I have to use public gardens, and earning animal husbandry achievements is a bigger resource expense since I have to release in public.
- High inventory overhead for some activities means I generally won't do them (especially collecting cubimals, musicblocks, emblems, etc).
Are there any other mid-high level homeless players out there?
