[New Skill] Locksmithing - solution to the key spawning problem.

Having the locked rooms is fun, but for some of them, getting the keys are really hard. For instance, the white and teal triangle key's spawn point is usually camped by at least one person. As a result, they go for really high prices on the Auction House. I do not think that this was the intended effect. Sure, access should be limited, but it shouldn't be a mass free-for-all like it is.

To solve this problem, I suggest a new skill: Locksmithing. Others have suggested making keys with Tinkering, but keys are too important and specialized to be lumped into tool-making. Tinkering should be used to make blank keys, but Locksmithing should be required to make a specific key. They should be relatively expensive to produce, but not unreasonable. No more than say a Fairly Hallowed Shrine Powder. I would suggest that the blank keys require a crystal and metal ingots to make, and then to make specific keys, you would need elements and crystals to attune them. The rarity of the key could be adjusted by simply requiring more resources to create. Once we get skill to make different kind of crystals, perhaps require those instead.

By doing this, keys become like any other resource in Glitch, a fun goal that you can work toward, without having to just sit and wait, and hope that someone doesn't grab it before you can.

  • There's a key spawning problem?

I've managed to collect a couple of spare keys of each type without even trying, so I don't see spawning keys as a problem.  In fact it would only be a problem if I insisted on going to the locked rooms all the time... and I suspect that is exactly what the keys are intended to prevent.

  • I may not be as rich as some AB miners, but I'm doing fine without having to agonize over keys.

  • How about "Key coloring" that allows you to repaint any triangle key (including a blank triangle key), to a teal-white triangle key?

Red skull key? no, you cannot craft a blank skull shape key by Tinkering. But you can color one from a black skull key.

  • Something like this could be used to make keys for your house to pass out to friends.
Would need a key ring as a tool to hold 50 keys.

  • I actually love the idea of rare ground spawns. I think more should be added. I've had many great conversations waiting around for keys to spawn!!!

  • Syruss, you can create rarity, without the tedious mechanism of simply waiting for one to pop.

The problem, as I see it is that unlike other MMO's, Glitch isn't really adversarial. There are currently only two areas in Glitch where we are competing for resources, and that is the Ancestral Homelands and the rare spawns (the biggest being keys). As I said, I understand the need for the rarity of such objects, but standing around waiting for something to spawn, and hoping to by a 10th of a second faster than the person next to you just isn't fun. Yes, Bashere, it does provide an opportunity to socialize (what else are you going to do), but so does mining, or any other activity.

Dr Pegasus, I basically see the key coloring as the same as key cutting. What I described as blank keys with Tinkering is essentially that; however I think that it is better to keep things simple, and only have one base key on which all others are derived, for which there is a lot of precedence in Glitch (eg, fruit, bubbles, beans, eggs, etc.).

I also agree with BlackWolf in how this could also be extended to allow people to make keys for their houses. Tiny Speck already mentioned in a recent blog post that they are working on such a system, and hopefully something akin to what I described could be combined with that system.
