Is My Mood Dropping Faster?

I may be misinterpreting things, but I believe I have seen the following. Since the IMG changeover, I've bumped my energy (and mood) tank up to over 4,000. As usual, both energy and mood drop periodically regardless of activity. I believe this drop is greater than before, probably a percentage of the full tank. If I'm correct, then the downward force of mood is greater while the upward forces (petting, nibbling, etc) have remained the same. If find that simply maintaining 90% mood now is quite difficult, where previously it was fairly easy.  A trip through the AL or drinking a Savory Smoothie has only part of the effect (percentage wise) that it formerly had.
I can't complain about the energy aspect, since energy at the bottom of the tank is just as valuable as energy at the top. But since mood level affects iMG rewards, it is significant.
Perhaps the Devs have thought about this and determined that the benefit of the bigger tank is greater than the need to do more mood maintenance. I dunno, but I'm curious first if my observations are correct and second if they've thought about this consequence.

  • FWIW, if you have the meditation skills, focused meditation for mood will bring you anywhere from 40 to 200 (which I have gotten) mood.   You can focus meditate for mood as much as you want - there is no limit, and all it does take is time.

As an example, one way I fight mood loss while mining is to focus meditate for mood before every rock I start.   Sometimes afterwards as well.  I think of it as "paying homage" to the rock, thanking it for what it is about to give me.   My mood stays up if I remember to do this.

Also, more, smaller donations will pop your mood back up.

And there's always the Glitch answer - get plastered!

  • Will these be able to slow Energy loss too? Or are there separate cards?

  • Yay stoot! That's exciting. =)
But why do only certain activities make my glitch happy?
For instance I LOVE mining and I feel my glitch does too as she never complains. However im having to constantly stop and suck down some butterfly milk. I dont like gardening but this makes my glitch happy =/ blah. Decisions!

  • +1 Clickadee. I've wondered the same thing about scooping jellisacs. I find it very satisfying and it raises my RL mood, but not my Glitch's mood.

  • hoorah for new update cards to come! I too have been having issues keeping my mood up, I am contantly getting my glitch drunk trying to keep her happy. If I keep this up she will pickle.

  • TY stoot!! I was very happy to see that announcement from you. Although my mood does seem to be dropping rapidly, I put it down to just having a larger tank and noticing it more. I just continue on my way and play. I do go through a fair amount of butterfly milk though.

  • Turns out, jellisacs emit a noxious pheromone that causes the cellular structures of  imagination-based constructs to release mood-depleting histamine into their own bodies.  A lot of people really want to make the mood-altering properties of certain activities about morality, (and there are a lot of dogmatic beliefs about those activities,) but, according to to the peer-reviewed research it really is all about chemical interactions and our bodies reactions to them that make the most impacts in your mood.

It's exactly the same science that makes the Rookswort vine such an effective anti-moodlost-histamine.   (Interestingly,  I am coming to believe that it's the vine, not the flower pedals that contain most of the Rooksworts antihistemic properties.)

That's not to say that your particular approach to certain activites can't greatly influence your overall enjoyment of your life-- certainly faith and belief have a role to play in the overall enjoyment of our time on Ur-- but when it comes to the statistical measure of your mood, it really is all about the numbers, and not a moral failing at all.

  • I'd like to point out that even with upgrades to slow mood loss the problem doesn't go away, it just changes shape.  If you lose 1% of your mood per minute then that changes how much you need to spend to keep your mood at full, it doesn't change the fact that more energy comes with more mood loss.

Once your energy crosses a certain point the only way you are going to keep your mood up is rookswort or savory smoothies - everything else will be much more expensive.  If you have 5000 energy then using rookswort is currently the best way to keep your mood up, and rookswort doesn't care what your rate of mood loss it.

After extensive math I decided that increasing my energy a little would be a benefit so I did so.  But whether it is a benefit does depend on how you play.  I don't think there should be such a strong statement in the FAQ indicating that all cards are universally beneficial.

  • I decided that for my style of gameplay, increasing my energy tank would not be beneficial, and I have been pretty happy with the small size of my energy tank EXCEPT that I often miss the warnings that my energy is low and find myself in Hell.  I wish the energy tank number were easier to see against all backgrounds and that the message that I'm about to croak showed up on screen like it used to rather than in the local chat because it can be easily obscured if too many things are going on.

  • For what is worth, I have not yet understood the problem with mood loss.
    Here are my numbers:

    Level: 50
    Energy tank: 9360
    Quoin multiplier: 113

If you keep your Energy tank at 1000 and your mood is at 100%, you will get x iMG for a certain action.

If your Energy tank grows to 3,000 and your mood is such that you get only 75% of what you could get at 100% mood, you will get 2.25 x for the same action.

In my book, the second situation is better.

Also, if you keep your Quoin multiplier around 1/100th of your Energy tank, you will get more energy from quoins.

And of course, you should visit regularly the Ancestral Lands.
In my best trip (in the middle of the night in North America) in the ALs, I got 57K Currants and 30K iMg.

  • Maybe a good tweak would be making meditation percentage-based instead of a fixed rate. Max relax would be a certain percentage of tank size.

The bigger your mood tank, the higher amount of mood you'd get from the same amount of meditating.

It would still work with upgrade cards, since, if I remember correctly, those basically extend the meditation time, not the amount per second. So, the longer you'd meditate, the closer you'd get to the target max relax percentage point.

Edit/Disclaimer: This is based upon a guess of how the mechanics work now. I don't know for sure, maybe it works totally diffrently than I think it does.

  • Ygasuasu - I'm not sure what you mean.  The amount of imagination you get from an action depends on your current mood as a percentage of your total mood.  Having twice as much mood does not mean getting twice as much imagination for an action.

For example, if you have 3000 max energy and currently have 2250 mood then you'll get 10 imagination for nibbling a piggy.  Someone with 1000 max energy and 1000 current mood will get 12 imagination for nibbling that piggy.

Thus, with 9360 energy you need to gain 140 mood per minute (or use rookswort) in order to keep getting 12 imagination from each piggy nibble, or 24% of the currant value of your donation, or 1.2 times you quoin multiplier for each imagination quoin.

With 2000 energy I need to gain 30 mood per minute in order to get the same bonuses.

    Sounds good though!  ;-)

  • @Humbabella - Apparently I am wrong about the iMG you get from actions. OK.

In any case, I believe it is in my advantage to have a high energy tank and a high quoin multiplier. And I will continue to use the cards that increase those (which are the only cards I am getting now, except for reshuffle and get out of hell).
Posted 7 months ago by Ygasuasu Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Well for the moment we really have little choice of what to buy.  You can go energy, you can go multiplier or you can go both.  The only choice that I think would be kind of insane would be going pure energy and ignoring quoin multiplier completely.
Posted 7 months ago by Humbabella Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm with Ygasuasu on this - I simply do not have a problem.  I never eat or drink, use no herbs, rarely meditate or use get out of hell, etc etc.  I get all my mood and energy requirements from icons, shrines, cards and quoins and usually have so much of energy/mood left at the end of the day that I hurriedly sing to butterflies to use it all up.  No different whether I play for 20 mins or 4 hours - simply no problem.  I am sorry for those that are having difficulties and can only assume we play very different styles. (level 50; energy 6130; multiplier 127.2)
