Organizing Inventory

I'm getting to the place where my bags and my house are a mess. I have no real system for organizing my inventory. So what I'd like to know is, how do others organize? What's your system?

  • I have sixteen bags with names relevant to the things that I do most :P I don't mine, so there's no mining bag. I gather resources, but I store them at home, so I don't use multiple resource bags.

I also use an idea I stole from someone, inbox bags. Two bags that are kept mostly empty in the left side of your inventory. They will fill up with things you collect as you collect them, and then you can organize the incoming items into the appropriate slot.

I keep my carrying inventory small by storing incredibly large piles of things at home. I have a stack for each item usually. I have a stack of meat, spice, eggs, cherries, planks, poison, seeds, metals, bog stuffs etc.

All that keeps me pretty good honestly :P

  • BIgger bags, LOTS of them , wish there were MORE colors so I could color code them (anal retentive I know) --and those bigger bags into the storage cabinet .Cause you can put bags into your cabinet -thank goodness! .
Then if i have extra bags I pile the bags into a pile ,just drop one top of each other ,so I have ONE pile of bags rather than several. Makes it a pain in the Glitch to get to the bag on the bottom , but at least I can walk through my cottage then, without tripping.....much. ;)
Also you can store things in your back yard. Just watch out anything you can eat -a pig can and WILL - happily, quickly eat-if you have pigs outside your animal pen. If you want to store edibles in your yard/floor ,place them in a bag first-if you have free roaming pigs. Other glitches may have even better plans than mine;)
I see that You already own the nice 50k house with the 3 floors and lots of yard, so I'm guessing bags may help with your storage issues. Hope this helps ;)

  • Liza has a pretty good system.  I also use the Inbox idea with the two slots to the left of the inventory.  When mining I will move my mining bags there.  One is for ore, the other for gems, and I switch them into the proper places as I work.

Besides the above I have a toolbox that contains all my mining, alchemical, etc tools and then a bag that contains all my kitchen tools.  I then have a few bags that are labelled "Cooking supplies."  At the far right I have a bag labelled, "Foodie bits."  This is where I put all food I'm carrying around so I can eat it quickly if I catch myself almost about to die.

I'm still working on getting my home organization down!  Will be watching the thread for ideas.

  • I have all Bigger Bags. The first three are, as Liza calls them, "inbox bags". I keep them mostly empty, so they can catch everything I gather/find/harvest. As I find stuff to that I plan to keep I move it to the furthest right inbox bag, for offloading in my house. (Into my cabinet, which also has labeled Bigger Bags.)

After that I have a bag containing miscellaneous stuff like my camera, my Faded Heart, some Pig Bait, various colored keys, and a couple teleportation scripts. Next is my Powders bag with my Test Tube, Beaker, Grinder, Pick, & compounds. I also keep my Focusing Orb, Emo Bear, 12-sided die, & a spare Random Kindness in here.

Then my emblem bag which also contains my cubimals. Next is my mining bag where I keep 5-6 of each type of rock (except Metal). Then my Tools bag, my Crops bag, my Groceries bag (with things from the Grocery Vendor that I can't make myself) & a Refining bag with bubbles & a tuner, gas & a gassifier, cherries & a fruit changer, eggs & a egg seasoner, and beans & a bean seasoner. Then I have an Elemental Pouch & a Spice Rack. I have two non-bag spots. One for Random Kindness (you have to have it nearby, because people move quickly!) & the next slot is my spinach, which I use constantly. Lastly I have a Consumables bag where I keep my food, drinks & extra spinach.

I know I carry WAY too much crap, but I like to be prepared! :D

Oh, and I wish there were more colors for bags too! I refuse to buy pink, so I'm limited to 4 colors!

  • I color code my bags. Brown bags on the left for miscellany (I call them catch-all bags but inbox works too!), looooots of pink "food" bags next for my sundry edibles and ingredients, next one grey bag for fun stuff (orb, bear, no-no, cubimals, dice), a few blue bags that I call "supply bags" to keep bubbles, ore, grain and the like, and finally a green bag to keep important things like gems and emblems.

At home everything is just everywhere. :P Like Liza I also stack things on the ground together, the grain bales look pretty nifty actually!

  • I try so hard to be organized. But honestly, what I have are a bunch of bags with names like, "I hate cooking," "This is a brown bag," "My bag labels suck," "This pink is ugly," and "Organization is for babies."

  • Simple.  No household organization.  Just piles and piles of stuff.  At least, similar stuff all ends up in the same pile.  But with hundreds of items on the floor, it takes a while for my house to completely load up.  I can't have company over:(

  • I use all bigger bags, and they are more or less color coded, and labelled from left to right:
Bag No 1.Grey: OPUS  -> Other Potentially Useful Stuff (a direct descendant of my OPUS file in my filing cabinet at work) holds things I regularly use and want to find quickly, such as Focusing Orb, Toys, my favorite herbs
    2.Grey: OPUS 2 -> emblems, alchemical powders,like EHSP,Fertilidust,Fecundity, Random Kindness etc
    3.Green: Incoming -> self explanatory
4.Pink: Sales and Donations -> all items I want to either sell, or donate to shrines
    5.Spice Rack
6.Green Toolbox with cooking utensils and small tools, like beaker, test tube, bubble tuner etc
7.Green: Food (fave prepped food,in order of energy value, high to low)
8.Green: Drinks (prepped drinks, sorted according to how it's made -> blender or shaker)
9.Blue: Stuff (anything food and drink related that I acquire while wandering the world, most of this gets sorted into special bags at home, such as beans, cherries, bubbles etc)
10.Elemental Pouch (called Ellie Mental Pooch)
11.Red Toolbox with heavy tools, some of them doubles ('cos Rube likes to take them)
12.Brown: Resources -> all things like planks, jellies, earth, loam, gas etc
13.Brown: Ore -> any type of ore (depends on what I'm after that day),but I also carry my gems etc here (if I'm lucky)
14.Brown: at the moment it's Barnacles and Fireflies -> spare grinder, crystalmalizing chamber,ff jars, plus room for barnacles/barnacle dust and crystals
15.Grey: Scilly Old Bag,which ends up holding all those things you acquire, but don't quite know which bag to put it in and/or overflow from other bags.
I like to keep the 16th slot clear,if it's full it usually means it's time to head to a shrine, a vendor, or home; sometimes I opt to carry an extra elemental pouch

  • In a "what did you wish you knew" thread on here, I happened across a mention that you can place entire bags in your storage closet (which in retrospect seems obvious ;).  In any case, it helped me out with general clutter quite a bit...

  • Same here: Bags are organized by topics and named accordingly.

I do change that system frequently though, as my playstyle changes. Otherwise I am suddenly stuck with a bag which I currently don't use as much as other ones.

I also use the colours to have some rough guideline (Green for herbs, Pink for food...).

The good thing about giving your bags names like "Musicblocks", "Gems", and so on, is that you will always immediatly find those things, when you need them. There are certaing things you very often want to find as fast as possible. With others, it does not matter if you have to search around a bit. I guess you should identify those things that you really need on a frequent basis and put all those things in a specific bag.

  • My bag system:

    1- Random/Pickups/Inbox
    2- Meat, Milk, Grain
3- Harvested - cherries, beans, evss, bubbles, gas, wood, paper
4- Crops - cabbages and spinach mostly, overflow from prev 2 bags
5- Meals - prepared foods for energy
6- Seeds, Drinks - prepared drinks and crop/herb seeds
7- Useful - focusing orb, emo bear, rand kindness, spinach for jumps, firefly jars, pig bait
    8- Mined - ores
9- Scrapped/Dug - peat, loam, jellisacs, earth, barnacles, talc
10- Materials - overflow from previous two bags
**- Keys - full of oft-used keys, plus overflow from values bag (** I included this and then realised I actually replaced this bag with cubimal case and keep needed key(s) in with valuables now...)
11- Valuables - SWFs, emblems, gems, music blocks
12- Tools - pick, spade, watering can, etc (cooking stuff and seasoners normally left at home)
    13- Cubimal Case
14- Spice Rack - well-stocked, some of everything
15- Alchemistry Kit - usually full
16- Element Pouch - usually empty, in case I decide to grind ore

I tend to spend a few days at a time away from home so try to get a balance of things in bags.

Back home, I filled my cottage up with stuff all over floor so got a 50k house which is a lot tidier. Still piles everywhere, but kept away from pigs now! Generally piles are similar items- ie pile of building materials in my machine shop area, piles of seeds by the crop gardens. Foods and drinks up on the top floor roughly organised. Valuble stuff and other tools in named bags in cupboard.
    Still feel disorganised...

  • First 2 slots are big bags with food, drink - stinky cheese, earth shakers , cosmapolitans, random food stuff I've made doing cooking quests ,eggs, spinach, 2 spare fancy picks and my 3 emo bears.
Slot 3 is a fancy pick, so I notice when it's running low and it's time to do repairing.
Slot 4 - 11 = 8 big bags - They're for filling up with stuff to sell - rocks, animal stuff, harvested things etc. I don't put anything I want to keep in those, as anything in them is for selling.
Slot 12 - stack of earthshakers - easy access
Slot 13 and 14 - Cubimal cases. I need to put them down in house and swap for 2 more big bags for sales stuff at some point, but I'm still in the "Yay! Cute! Cubimals!" stage at moment. I'll get bored of them soon...I hope
Slot 15 - Very Very Stinky cheese - best item ever. So versatile, can die with it, live with it. Energy, mood... whatever. a stack of no-no, and a few random kindness to bestow on fellow miners.
Slot 16 - Big bag full of tools.

Non essential tools stay at home, as do elemental pouches, spice racks and stuff like that.

  • This is awesome stuff! And DUH, I hadn't realized I could put bags in my storage cabinet. Talk about missing the obvious.

  • Some advanced bag/inventory management ideas I use (in conjuntion with the idea of 'inbox' bags, named bags, bag category colors, and reserve-bag swapping as others have mentioned above):

    1) Keep item 'placeholders' (1-unit stacks) in the places in your bags where you want them, and don't ever 'empty out' any item from your useful-item-stacks completely.

For example, my "MEMEME" bag has things like EHSP, awesome stews, pig bait, random kindness -- basically things I always want to have onhand but use often enough to require frequent replenishing and restocking and recrafting when low.  My "Ingredients" bag has -- you guessed it -- ingredients for stews and meat tetrazinni etc.

When I go to eat some stew, I only ever eat up to 11 at once (out of a total max of 12 per bag slot);  the leftover stew 'reserves' the spot in my bag for more.  When I hit 1 in each food slot, I know it's time to head back home.  Then, when I pick up more stews or craft more, they automatically get added to that slot.  I have about 4-5 food slots so even when I'm crafting 40 at a time, they all get sorted where I want them and never hit my 'inbox' bags.

Ingredients are a little trickier because you usually want to use the maximum amount you have, leaving remainders of 0 for the ingredients after crafting.  Instead of doing the max, I always craft 39 -- or, the total max I can craft minus 1.  This way everything from tomatoes to tangy sauce to rice to spices always stay in fixed locations in my bags -- so I always know where to look for them, which makes it a snap to figure out how to replenish at a vendor/garden, and the sorting happens pretty much automatically.  (At least, until you exceed the stack size limit.)

    2) Also, don't be afraid to fill every slot you can with a bigger bag.  I didn't do that for a while because I liked having at least a few inventory slots to swap stuff between bags, but you won't miss the spaces once you get all bigger bags in every slot.  (I do use an element bag and an alcehmy bag, so it's not technically all of my slots... but yeah.)

    3) Use the floor to organize in piles.  Make sure to put piles at least 1-2 "Glitchlengths" (the width of your toon) apart so they don't overlap -- this makes it much easier to pick up a whole pile of 5000 meat by spamming enter, not having to wade through a menu to select the stacks you want.

    4) Use a single bag for your emblems and don't carry it with you.  I only hit the emblems up once per game day, and I'm always at home at least once per day, so there's no need to carry any emblems around other then new ones from donations.  They can be accessed by a simple bag drop/pickup swap and then dropped again.  With 11 giants, they fit nicely into one big bag and spare a little room which I usually put EHSP in just in case I've forgotten to restock elsewhere at my house.  Sort the extras on the floor into piles.

    5) Use the 'unique' bags as visual landmarks in your inventory.  I put the elemental bag and alchemistry kit between my 'inbox' bags and my 'stuff i always have onhand' bags.  It makes it very quick to look down and see when you're getting close to exceeding your inbox bags.  I wish there were more bag colors/shapes/icons for this reason.

    6) Don't use a spice rack.
Seriously.  No cook ever needs to have that many different kinds of spices onhand, and they're just wasted space if not.  Note that the spice rack has the same size as a bigger bag, so the only advantage of them is they look different, and when you obtain spices they get auto-sorted into that bag.

    7) You can drag stuff on your floor directly into the bag/ bag slot you want it in.  I didn't know this for a long time, and I bet others don't too.  You don't have to use enter to pickup -- you can literally drag any item that's on your floor/street into any inventory slot you want.  Easy!

@ Staff: The biggest unexpected pain for me in terms of messy inventory is actually those 'random surprise' bonuses you get from petting/harvesting etc.  For example when I go on a milk run, I'd like it if all my milks got right up next to each other -- but invariably they get dispersed as I pick up single units of random crap which I just donate.  I kinda wish I could turn off my bonuses believe it or not, or even just drop them on the ground so I can grab them manually! =(   I think a host of sorting options would go a long, long way to making all Glitches' lives easier.

These are my best ideas, at least until someone develops a good 'autosorting' API-using web app (Agent86 I"m looking at you!! =)They have a start with the Glitch Inventory iPad app, but there's definitely a market for someone to write this and make a killing (on web ads).

Edited for clarity, spelling, and inserted points 3&7.

  • stacking on the floor at home is always good, especially if you're good at aligning yourself in to exactly the same spot as before.
much better for stacks of rocks, or herbs that can only be stored a finite number to a bag slot.

  • For storing stuff in your home, if you have one of the bog houses you should have natural "closets" where your stuff is hidden behind interior walls.  My house has two of them.  I use one for edible resources (stacks of bundled grain, bubbles, beans, fruit, etc) in the upper compartment where the piggies can't eat it and I use my downstairs "closet" for inedible resources (peat, blocks, loam, jellasics, barnacles, fuel cells, etc).  That way, all that unsightly clutter is hidden away and your home looks all clean, but you can still hoard away.

I use this technique in real life, too, ehehehhehe.

  • Slots 1 & 2 - tool boxes (1 is general tools, 2 is kitchen tools)
    Slot 3 - spice box

I like these first so tools and spice get automatically dropped into the right bags

    Slot 4 - focusing orb
Slot 5 - Usually a Welcome Bag waiting for a young Glitch to sneak into my awareness.
The rest are all big bags:
Slot 6 - new stuff to be sorted as I feel like it. First spot in bag 6 is sammiches to pass out to sleeping Glitchen (thank you to T. Lute for the suggestion/song). Bag 6 is the one I leave open to view, so I can sort stuff as soon as it comes in.
Slot 7 - Overflow from other bags.
Slot 8 - Milk, grain, eggs, cheese
    Slot 9 - Meat
Slot 10 - Produce (beans, cherries, onions, etc.)
Slot 11 - "Raw materials" hooch, olive oil, fizzy sauce, etc.
Slot 12 - Emblems, potions and powders
Slot 13 - Music boxes (I get a lot of these as I am a harvester and chef)
Slot 14 - Cubis to give away, piglets, catterpillar eggs, etc.
Slot 15 - Rock, gems, other stuff with no real home
Slot 16 - prepared food and drink to sell, trade or consume

Your bag organization needs to fit your liefstyle. I love my spice box as I can quickly check what I have and my spice does not get all mixed up with everything else. If I was a miner, it might not be as useful. I carry most things around with me - I auction or donate the excess.

My cabinet at home has my cubi bag with the ones I intend to keep, bags of extra emblems, extra tools, my alchemical kits, elemental bags and the like, fully loaded Welcome Bags to pass out to young Glitchen, Senor Pickle, my GNG musicbox and other especially valuable items that I do not want to risk donating. My floor only has stacks of planks (I know there will be a use for these someday!) and partially complete Welcome Bags.

    5 shrine donations
    6 focusing orb - if I don't give it it's own slot I'll never find it :p
    7 drinks
8 collecting items ( one stack of each to fill until it's full and be dropped at home)
gas, lumber, cherries, beans, bubbles etc
9 emblem bag(all 11, I hit these up first before I use any food) a few RK's and any emblems I pick up
10 bag mostly of Awesome Stews and other prepared food
    11 kitchen tool box
    12 regular tool box
    13 & 14 cooking supplies
    15 spice rack
    16 alchemy kit

  • I have a harvesting bag that contains:
Usually has one item in each of them so that when harvesting these things auto sort.
    eg:
3 slots with 1 wheat each
2 slots with 1 cherry each
    1 slot with 1 wood
2 slots with 1 bean each
    2 slots with 1 bubble
    2 slots with 1 gas
    2 slots with 1 paper
    2 slots with 1 spice
    etc..
    BOOM auto sorting

Would work within mining as well but that's usually a pretty focused project.

  • I am an organization *freak*. At last count I had just under 100 bags - most neatly labelled.

My current general going about the world set up is:
    1) Basic Resources: this has a specific slot for the various harvestable resources. When something reaches max stack size, I push it over to "Resource Overflow" (If mining, this is a special mining resources bag)
2-5) Randomness: These contain the various & a sundry things gathered in a day. (If mining, my rock bags here).
    6) Tools: My garden, mining, grinding sorts of tools
    7) Tools: My kitchen & potions sorts of tools (if mining, this is my compounds bag)
    8) Travel Bag: holds things like teleport scripts, keys, seasoned beans, baby animals, pig bait, poison & antidote (if mining, this is my elements bag)
    9) Resource Overflow: Whatever has overflowed from my "basic resources" bag and needs to be reorganized into the proper resource bags at home. (if mining, this is my elements overflow)
    10) To Sell
    11) Ingredients
    12) Powders & Tinctures
    13) Food & Drink
    14) Potions
    15) Gifts
    16) New Player stuffs

The inventory bags are all color coded. Brown bags for randomness, Blue for resources, Gray for "to do" bags (to sell, to reorganize), Green for food, Pink for buff-y stuffs. The color coding falls apart a bit in the house, but there is a place for everything and everything is, mostly, in it's place - hidden behind doors & corners.

My closet has a bag for each basic resource named for that resource & how many stacks are full (or f for full e for empty). Extra slots are taken up by notes & zilloween stuff.

Hidden upstairs - bags of rocks, ingots, and stuff I'm gathering for badges (ie a bag of honey for the make a gazillion seasoned eggs)

Hidden downstairs - bags of firefly cubimals, fun giveaway stuff (for contests or to hide around Ur)

Hidden in the basement - bags of herbs, Vera Strange Blooms stuff, fireflies, blocks, hooch, & grain

    Yes, I'm a hoarder. But I'm a neat one ;)

  • I devote several regions of my house to different items. One if for miscellaneous (gas, wood, old tools, other junk - swf blocks), another for seed, guano, and my guano feedstock "meat sack", another for veggies and harvested tree product, one for sauces, milk, stuff like that, etc. 16 ct bags or old leftover 10ct bags for organizing various goods (I have two 16 ct bags for cherries and one for beans) , a small section for raw and finished bubbles (3 or 4 bags), another for "anima", and then my cabinet for my god sacks and shinies

  • I'm not much of a hoarder.  I would totally second the votes for keeping some "inbox" bags in the left side of your bar.  That'll help keep all the ones to the right organized.

I also keep two bags on the right called "donate me", where I stick everything I know I don't normally use.  I guess this might change once I have all the icons, but at the moment, I'm always at a shrine, it seems,  just like I'm always carrying around like twenty music boxes, ha.

I dumped my spice rack, too!

  • My only real rule:

I do not allow myself to drop a bag or put it in the cabinet without it having a meaningful name on it.  That extends to the pile of bags labeled 'empty' in the corner.  And I almost never put anything directly on the floor except a bag or equipment that needs to be on the floor.

  • I'm terribly disorganized. I label bags but then they fill with the wrong things especially because my inbox bags fill- when I remember to put inbox bags- and im too lazy to put things in their right places and everything is everywhere.
    One good tip though-
If you're trying to sort stuff, make piles on the floor of your house. Food, basic resources, tools, ore, emblems, etc.
