Confused by Pungent Sunrise

So, if I understand aright, a Pungent Sunrise knocks 90 seconds off the time for the skill you're learning presently.

1 Favor point with the primary giant knocks off 10 seconds.
1 Favor point with a secondary giants knocks off 7 seconds.

A Pungent Sunrise lists at 197 currants, ergo 19.7 favor.  Which is 197 seconds with the primary or 137 seconds with a secondary.  Unrelated giants, I don't know about.  And that's stock, without EHSP.

So what I want to know is: why would I drink a Pungent Sunrise instead of donating it and then using favor points?  I mean, there's a little marginal stuff there about emblem limits, but realistically it's not too big a deal to keep 20 favor increments under the emblem mark, and you could always spend first and donate after.  And, as a donation, Pungent Sunrises are as good as anything else, so why bother with making them in the first place?

I suppose, maybe enlightment buffs stack with favor speedups?  I thought you could get to halfway in speedups and then the rest had to be learned, but if they stack, I could see the benefit.

All in all, my game-sense is confused and distressed.

  • Favor daily caps, you only get half your time off max with favor, pungeant can be used anytime during the skill learning time

  • Geez. I always wondered what that drink was doing. Yes. I'm slow on the uptake.

  • @Marion Pungent Sunrises/Yellow Crumb no longer work once you hit that limit from donations, either.

@OP, I guess the clincher is..... energy?

  • @Negata, how is energy a concern?  On the one hand, Sunrises are hard to make: total of 51 energy from raw ingredients.  But most of all: regardless of how much energy they cost to make, I'm still better off donating them than drinking them.  What sense does that make?

  • Yarrow for prime minister!!

Edit: they are EXTREMELY difficult to make, btw. I whipped up 40 last week, as a joke, really. Energy costs aside, I belive they cost me 2000 cherries.

  • Maybe you make them... because you can?

IRL I have certainly spent a long time making foods that are less calorific, less tasty, more time consuming or complicated than other foods. But I enjoyed making them nonetheless.

Sure, if you want to get all mathematical about it then perhaps it makes more sense to pour your drink away. But what is dribbling your liquid into a shrine compared to the joy of sipping a pungent sunrise with your friends, looking out over your Groddle Forest garden on a fine evening?

  • [Edit: may have run afoul of a character limit...]

Question: Can I drink and reduce learning after I've hit the *donation cap* and still haven't hit my "You can't learn any faster" wall? If I can drink more drinks after I hit the daily donation cap, I can use a combination of drinks and donations to hit the max acceleration cap much quicker. Of course, this point is moot for skills that only take a few hours, but for a multiple-day (real-time) learning period, it means I don't have to make sure I have ~1000 favor points worth of donation ready every single game day.

Also, again, this game is all about choices, much like wurzel points out. What if someone wants to get their learning accelerated, but doesn't want to spend favor with a giant to do so? From a flavor standpoint, that might be due to the value to the player of "doing it on my own" rather than "getting help from someone else" or for any other reason. It may not be *optimal*, according to your style of play, but that doesn't mean it's not someone else's warm bowl of chilly-bustin' chili...

  • @Yarrow I was working on the assumption that you have the drinks (via making, or freebies from chickens etc). I never said it was a good. Since the value of Sunrises has nothing to do with how you got them in the first place, the only advantage to drinking a sunrise over donating it is the small energy reward. The xp return from drinking is worse, since you'd get 5.67 times that by donating.

Quick note: On the subject of value, the base ingredients only cost 50c to make. (43 Cherries, 5 Allspice @1c/ea, 1 Hooch @2c) A fourfold increase in item value isn't terrible by any means.

The energy return is situational, but if you make them while on No-No, or just before gaining a new level or before a new day, or even just hold onto the freebies you get, then there's a possible use to be found if you want to find it. Keep in mind they're a fairly common request in street projects, too.

Yellow Crumbs are the same way, being 10 seconds better off after a donation. But they don't have any other use.
