massage 13 butterflies quest

The "massage" menu option only goes dormant after you massage the same butterfly twice.  You still only need to massage once to milk the butterfly (but massage on the menu stays active as an option).

It seems to be linked to the assignment of the 13 butterfly quest.  Before I received this quest the menu worked properly--  after one massage the massage option went dormant.

Same thing with the menu is now happening to me with "pet" pigs, too.

  • I've noticed this too.  After doing the "Go Moloko Loco" quest to massage butterflies, and the "Get a Rasher" quest to pet pigs, somehow I can massage butterflies and pet piggies twice per day.

Other than the mood bonus, there's no point to this, and in the case of butterflies, it wastes butterfly lotion.  If this is intended behavior, could it be removed?  It makes identifying which butterflies you've massaged (and are ready for milking) more difficult than it already is.

  • It has to do with the skill you just learned. It lets you pet/massage twice a day. Same as higher level skills let you nibble/milk twice a day, or nibble/milk without petting/massaging

  • The whole butterfly skill is very hard for me. I know the tricks (jump, enter) and the keys to massage, milk, etc BUT when I massage one I have to chase it all over to milk it. The swarming of butterflies makes extra hard. I was able to massage 3 of them, but couldn't catch any of those three to milk. Kept running into pigs and trees and other butterflies. I finally just gave up. Maybe my problem was because the massage option not going dormant as part of another quest, as rothko pointed out---one I will not attempt because I suck at massaging/milking butterflies. LOL

  • Kinda of a lame bonus, honestly.  Being able to pet/massage twice a day is just a drain on resources, particularly when it comes to butterflies, since extra petting and massaging doesn't earn you any extra meat or milk, and that's the only real reason to do it - to get the meat/milk from the critter in question.

It would make a lot more sense to switch the "pet/massage twice" bonus with the "nibble/milk twice" bonus in Animal Kinship.  Animal Kinship V is the point where lotion is no longer required to massage butterflies, so getting the extra massage at that level or later causes no additional drain on resources besides your Energy level.

As it stands, you need an Emblem of Humbaba and a full five ranks or more of Animal Kinship just to get that second nibble or milking.  Even Gardening gets you a second Harvest action for all trees in the game before an Emblem of Mab or Grendaline becomes necessary, and that starts at Gardening I, which is only 4 skills away from the start (SA1, SA2, LGT1, G1).

  • How about reducing the quest to 6 in one day, really it takes so much time and more experience makes it a bit easier but no less frustrating.

  • I'm okay with it's hard to milk butterflies (some are harder than others).  Edward explained what was going on with the skill and the massage/pet twice a day.  I feel the action menu should make this clear.

  • i had a possibly related issue with this quest last night, but have a different idea about the cause.

i massaged 13 butterflies, and of course milked each one as well, because you might as well while you're at it.  except there was one that got away and i couldn't milk it, because as noted, there's no way to tell which you've already hit unless you milk them as well.  and after 13 massages, no milk.

but then i found a new butterfly that i had not massaged or milked before.  massaged and milked it, and got the quest completion notice.  unfortunately, i was pretty tired, and not entirely sure now whether the notice came after the massage or the milking of the 14th butterfly.

my theory was that the quest counter was looking at whether you massaged *and* milked the butterflies.
