Master Gardener and Potionmaking III

Master Gardener and Potionmaking III skills have been released. (In addition, 3 new potion recipes were made available to those of you who know Potionmaking II: Embiggenifying Potion, De-Embigennifying Potion and Trantsformation Fluid).

The two new skills work together well: there are 5 new gardening potions which are made with Potionmaking III  — but you can’t use them unless you have Master Gardener. There’s a potion to harvest an entire garden with a single pour, and likewise potions to clear, water, plant and fertilize all at once.

Since these are both high level skills and will probably take you a while to learn, we imagine some of you will be choosing one and some the other and there will be some buying and selling going on :)

The sixth potion for PM3, Draught of Giant Amicability, gives you 111 favor with a randomly chosen Giant, but you can “shake” the potion three times a day to switch it to another Giant.

Have fun!

  • I don't know which I dislike more, the incessant quacking from the current gardening or the ungrateful meh-ing from this forum. So much complaining for something nobody has even tried yet! You don't even know the friggin' ingredients list!

I bow down to the neverending wisdom of the game creators that their recipes will be fair and awesome, as always.

  • For what it's worth, I was having a LOT of fun with the chaos forest potion. And I'm not entirely sure what the problem was with allowing egg trees in Ix or whatever, especially when we can plant egg trees in our non-cave home streets.

What if non-native trees were still possible to make, but just required a lot more care, otherwise would die off much more quickly?

  • Here is an old thread that discusses the idea of being able to, with effort, grow exotic plants (non-native trees).  I thought it was a good idea then, and still do!

  • Frumious, it says "no extra guano necessary".

  • Honestly I'm glad that gardening will still take a bit of work.  Is that wrong of me?  I play the game to play the game, and to have things happen with little or no effort or instantaneously is a little like not playing the game.  Just weighing in.

  • Any chance you could add a "locks character in place for XX seconds, deducts the appropriate amount of energy from character" option to the gardens? I mean, you can still have the potions for fast gardening and another button that does the same work as before in the same time as before just with one click

  • I think the   Trantsformation Fluid is bugged. I used more than 3 uses off a bottle (I have 2 of em in my bag) but it still showed the potions as full with 3/3 uses left.

  • I would like to second the suggestion by Jindujun. Clearly, TS is reluctant to allow instant gardening, but is there any need to enforce repetitive clicking? I would happily pay for an upgrade or a potion that lets me just freeze in place and wait for all the required actions to happen without having to click 4 or 5 times on every darn plot.

  • So now gardeners have to either:
    1. Spend the time and skills to learn to make the potions then,
1a. Spend either the time or currants to get the ingredients to make the potions...
    AND, OR,
    2. Outright buy the potions.
How does this help the gardener? It doesn't. All that has been done is, the time it used to take to garden  has now been shifted and now, the gardener either has to take more time out of their overall game day or spend more currants out of pocket. Please think of something better...As I will be.

  • If you don't like them, don't use them. You seem to be the only one having a problem.

  • Avnas, a better response would have been: Well, I would enjoy going out and collecting the ingredients over clicking the crops/herbs and guanoing over and over again. This is a discussion and it is beta. The reason  I am saying what I said is EXACTLY what you replied...No one else is discussing these issues. Discuss.

  • Also, I like the posts by Jindujun and Lil Frumious (just above the potion recipes where the idea is to have the gardener stay in place as each of the gardening duties like hoeing, seeding, watering is done by one click each duty...the glitch stays in place and the time is averaged out by one click instead of many clicks to perform that specific duty for each plot).
Just to back up this idea, when you run the fruit changer, do you have to click over and over again? Nope, just choose how many you want and it goes through the motions.

  • I would like to interject a opinion as well, if I may.

The Draught of Giant Amicability is underwhelming for the resources required to make it.

111 favor times 11 uses comes to 1221 favor, spread over 11 game days. The Extremely Hallowed Shrine Powder alone could contribute more then that in a single day, making this potion's usefulness... well, less. I understand it stacks with shrine donations, but it seems to me like an underutilization of resources for what it takes to make it.

  • Aedus, thanks for sharing the recipes. Been looking for them for the past days. *hugs*

And a question for TS: Do the gardening potions affect all the plots in your location - backyard or home street - or just those you can reach, e.g. maximum of 2 plots?
Posted 4 months ago by Heatseeker Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I agree with Aedus re: how underwhelming the giant favor potion is. With the time spent gathering its ingredients you could harvest something else to use Extremely Hallowed Shrine Powder with (e.g. piggy meat) and gain a lot more total favor. Also the potion itself seems to be worth way more if donated on its own, which is... peculiar? There doesn't seem to be any particular reason to *use* the potion if it's worth more donated than used. Even if it stacks with shrine donations, 111 favor is a negligible amount.

  • Anybody remember Keycutter Potion? Talk about underwhelming. As the curator of a home street with lots of herb plots, I am curious to see whether these potions will be worth the effort/currants required to procure them.

I sorta hoped the Master Gardener level would allow some automation.

  • It occurs to me that planting & harvesting are quick, whereas hoeing & watering have those timed animations. Since for me it's the time rather than the clicks per se, I expect I'll only be regularly making & using two of the new potions...

  • @Jindujun--From the description of most (not dung-kicker) each "use" is for the nearest garden. So, it is for 11 gardens. If they are large gardens then it is for 165 plots. Except Dung-kicker which is only good for 5 gardens, 75 plots.

The question of how Dung-Kicker works is still up in the air. Does it take 50% of the time off or 90%? If it's 50% can you apply twice and have it take off 90%? Next weekend :)

Draught of Giant Amicability is worth more donate. It is worth more to donate the ingredients. It is worth more to donate the ingredients of the ingredients. Basically, i'm making 1 and passing it around for the new item iMG. Like the key-cutter potion.

+1 to Lil Frumious--it's not the waiting it's the endless clicking. While you're at it...can we also make more than 1 powder and 1 tool at a time??? Too much with the clicky clicky.

  • It seemed to take off about 95% with 2 applications. Maybe it accounts for the herb growing upgrade.

Edit: Just did a test with Yellow Crumb and 2 applications of Dung-Kicker, it took 22mins.

Posted 4 months ago by Guts Duodenum Subscriber! | Permalink
  • And yes, now I've tried them they feel a little... underwhelming for their current cost of 10k. Each charge from any potion works only for the nearest garden patch, be it small, medium or large.

So as an example, for my back yard which is filled with 6 large patches of 15 plots each, a full harvest - replant cycle will use 6 charges of each potion, one charge for each patch of 15 plots (deliberately worded this verbose to avoid confusion). This translates to 24k currants in cost per each harvest - clear - water - replant. Add way more if you fertilize.

Dung kicker works exactly like the above - good only for the one garden patch (of 15 plots in my case) - and with 2 applications yc harvests are ready in 15 - 20 min.

Each has to decide if the steep cost now (~10k / potion) is worth it for them. For me, when I'll be able to make 'em I might use some from time to time. They save time a lot, but also cost a lot.

    P.S.:
And to TS, I now feel the wording on the skill itself is misleading a lot: None but the Master Gardener can pour the potions that allow you to water, plant, fertilize, harvest and clear a whole garden at once.
With these potions as they are now, there's no way to clear a whole garden at once. Just a whole patch, be it small, medium or large.

Perhaps a rephrase might be useful, as all the people I've spoken with this morning said they will no longer learn this skill once they found out from me it doesn't actually apply to the entire garden.

And it does feel a bit cheap and disappointing now for me as I've spent perhaps around 100K in total costs for emblems and over 50k on potions just to see it doesn't work as advertised. Others might feel differently, that's just my take on this :)

  • Some #s (these are all just very preliminary guesses-- I'm sure there are many errors, so take it all with a grain of salt. For instance, I'm not including the cost of the energy used to make the potions, or adjusting for the imagination one gets from doing so. Also, my assumed prices are probably hinky-- values are fluctuating pretty fast right now).

Assuming you buy all ingredients, in bulk, from SDBs, the cost per garden is around 3,052 (to use all 5 potions, and dung-kicker twice). If you value the tinctures at the price you could sell them to the tool vendor, that goes up to 3,336. If you value the tinctures at the price you could sell the seeds shucked from the herbs used to make them, price goes to 4,049.

This is highly sensitive on the cost of guano. I've been assume 100 / guano for the above-- if you value it at 10 / guano, price/garden goes down to 1,533 / 1,817 / 2,530

Even then, that's over 100 currants per plot. Might just make sense with YC, but the time you'd spend getting the guano, going around to find all the essences, etc. would make this a minimum wage job at best. And you'd make more just shucking herbs and selling to Tool Vendor...

I can't see any way these potions are ever anything but a novelty.  Hope I'm missing something...

  • New potions are awesome!
Posted 4 months ago by Electric Wizard Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The potions are great because they automate something that could only be done before with time or work. Now if I don't want to spend the time doing these gardening tasks, I can throw currants at the problem. This is something I could not do before.

Whether it is better or worse is less relevant to me than to be given more options, more ways of doing things. Thats always a good thing.
Posted 4 months ago by capodistria Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Heatseaker, it does apply to the whole garden. If you have a large one, it will work on all of it at once.

(Unless by "garden" you mean the entire back yard part of the house? I think most of the devs are in the US and would say "garden" to mean only the specific part of your yard where you grow vegetables/fruits.)
Posted 4 months ago by Feylin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • re SchwM's post www.glitch.com/forum/genera....
These costs are based on buying the essences. I'd be interested in the figures if you grew the herbs and made the essences yourself.

Also the novelty of them has made the price of buying the potions unrealistically high, which will not be sustained. Everyone is wanting to try them, but few can yet make them.

I can already use them but it won't be until Sunday that I can make them myself. I will try them then

My expectation is that I will not optimise my currant income, not a priority for me, but will increase my enjoyment of Glitch enormously which is a priority for me

Yes, choices have to be made, but this is a Good Thing, not Bad
Posted 4 months ago by IrenicRhonda Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Feylin: Indeed, I see your point that in US when you say garden it may actually mean a small portion of the actual back yard. Where I'm coming from garden usually means the entire thing. And from my earlier conversations with other glitchen I realized they took garden the same way as me, the entire thing. Thus, my suggestion perhaps for TS to reword the skill description a bit in such a way to make things more clear for everyone, especially those that aren't in US.

@IrenicRhonda: You mirror my thoughts about these potions too. They're loads of fun to use, will keep some around when my play time is limited and I want to harvest quickly, but from a currant making point of view they're rather... lacking :)
Posted 4 months ago by Heatseeker Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Irenic -- if it doesn't make sense to do this stuff (from a currants perspective, I totally agree that it might make sense from a "throwing currants at the problem" perspective), then growing your own doesn't make it better (from a currants perspective), it just trades time for currants.

(Because the herbs I grew could always be sent to the open market, etc).

The other thing is, those calculations are . . . not well-defined. Do I assign a value to my time? Or am I just getting paid slave wages? Do we just go back to seeds, or do we also grow our own vapour trees, and gassify them, etc... Do we put a value on the energy also?

So I'm not going to bother doing those calculations.

But, I see your point. The people to whom these potions will appeal are people who have (many) more currants than seconds. So it might make sense to grow your own crops, turn them into potions, and sell them to those people.

However, I'm guessing (based on the above) that it would make more sense to just sell those people the crops.

But fortunately for most of my money-making schemes, people rarely make sense. :)

  • Heatseeker, gardens are small, medium, or large, each containing a certain number of plots. Patches are for trees.  Potions work as advertised.

Is it an economically viable option?  I think so.  The time spent harvesting, watering, and planting 15 plots on all six of my gardens is pretty immense.  When I focus on it, I do not have any time to leave my house.  Instead, I can choose to stop growing yellow crumb for a few days, cycle through the herbs required in the gardening potions, and then resume yellow crumb growth, freeing more time to go goof with friends.

That said, I am a little disappointed because stoot called it automation, and I do not think of this as automation.  It requires a player to be there and take action.  I think of it as more related to the powder of startling fecundity than remote herd keeping, and I think of the latter as automation and the former as not, as a way of quickly getting pigs to drop a bunch of meat on the ground.  Semantics I suppose. But semantics are probably why some people seem . . . angry?  Bitter?  Something like that.

  • @Heatseeker - in general, Glitch terminology is internally consistent. When you go into cultivation mode, you place a "small garden" or a "large garden", and a potion that works on a "garden" works on the item that you placed. I can see how this would be confusing to non-USians, but I'm not sure what else we would call it - we already use "plot" (for the individual squares in a garden) and patch (for where you plant a tree).

And I personally love not having to click on 15 separate plots.
