Community Veggie Gardens Are Making Me Sad :o( - and...newbies asking me for a money a lot lately...

So I visited Groddle Height's Community Garden about an hour ago(ish) and it was pretty much cleared out so like I normally do I filled it up with spinach...just popped back and again, it's completely cleared out and not been tended either.  I think from now on I'm just going to replant what I harvest myself until other players become a little more giving in their own gardening routines : ( : ( : ( : (

I've noticed this happening more and more frequently lately, particularly in Middle Arbor and Groddle Heights.  I'm hoping it's just a greedy newbie with a bad habit and not a more experienced player...*goes off to sulk* :)

--------

the add-on, was approached by another level 4 today and low and behold the 3rd sentence out of the players mouth was 'I'm so frustrated as I have no currants so can't complete the quests!'  I don't know if anyone else is experiencing an influx of people asking for money? I even came across a note in the mines last night asking for money so they could buy a house.  Get real people!! You get out of this game what you put in to it.  Squeeze those pesky pigs, eat that meat and sell the rest!! Please...

  • I usually harvest/clear about 5 patches and plant about 10.

  • I normally try to fill it up but I was more irked as twice in the space of a couple of hours is taking the pee.  I suppose I could plant the longer seeds like spuds and then if they want to grab all and not reharvest they'd have to guano and wait and run the risk of being witnessed ;)

  • ..another guy the other day was walking around player to player IM'ing each saying 'I have no energy and no currants'.  I don't want to be rude to anyone but I'm getting pretty narked at telling people (that are undoubtedly alts of dubious players) to squeeze pigs when they are sure to already know but can't be bothered to put the game time in. Rants...

  • I haven't seen a newbie since I seduced my wife into playing.  I keep missing them.  But it seems to me like we've got some training to do!

  • I think part of the issue with new players begging is that there are so few new players now during beta, but there are already a fair number of max-level players, so the newbies feel like they have to play catch up. They might not see many other players near their level, after all.

Begging for items/money is a bad habit in any situation, but I'd guess people are less likely to do it when there are plenty of other players who are (essentially) their peers.

I have no idea how to solve the issue... just wanted to throw my theory into the tubes.

  • that's a good point Elyd.   I don't know what it is..I just get a sense that they will ask for money and 9 times out of 10 it's the second or third thing out of their mouths..(or keyboard!).  It's just the conversations you get generally give me the feeling I'm dealing with an alt of someone else.

I will always help newbies I believe are genuine but as soon as someone is quick to mention currants and food the alarm bells start ringing for me.  Maybe because it's never been in my nature in RL or GL to beg for anything in that way.

  • No, guys...beggars are always just that...they want things for free...and since when did it cost anything to do the quests?!  Frankly, it's completing the quests that give you your first influx of currants...yes, never a good sign when the beggars are the primary influx for a game...

  • For me it's really frustrating to come to the gardens and see ALL the plots taken up.. when I go there, I go there to garden.  And if I go there to garden and there's no free plots it's really disappointing to me.  So when I can I clear out at least 1 patch of plots so whoever comes after me has some room to grow their own stuff.  Please try to see it from the other side of the issue.  It may be nice to others to run through and harvest what others have planted, but for those of us who just want to garden, to come and see every single available plot taken up with spinach, and then have to wait for it to ripen, THEN wait ANOTHER minute or whatever until we can pick them, then get to plant our own stuff just for more waiting.. ARGH.  >_<!!!

  • though we're in invite only mode atm...so...the question is how are we having a beggar influx?

More likely existing beggars making more accounts.

  • Perhaps the generosity by such a huge amount of higher levels (due to scarcity of lvl 3-5s and the helping quest) the new players thinks that's the way we play?
If you constantly get stuff thrown at you in the beginning, why would you expect otherwise later on?

I'm NOT saying this is default behavior nor one I condone nor practice, but I can see why it would occur for some..

  • If people beg like clueless kids (rather than behaving like the many resourceful and responsible kids I know), perhaps it's best to treat them as clueless kids and give them a clue: "Announcing you have no food or money and expecting or asking other people to give it to you is not a good strategy. It may lead players to block you so that they will no longer see anything you say and you won't be able to visit their street. It's in your best interest to learn how to get your own food and earn your own currants in this game. Would you like some advice on how to do that?"

  • Auren, valid point too!! I'll remember next time I plant up : ) The other side of the issue is that the entire garden but 3 plots had been harvested and not tended (all still weedy) - that's what annoyed me.  Some could say at least I'd get the xp from clearing them but now I've reached level 60 xp is not to be found : ( : ( : (

I find that in the herb gardens too with no spaces to plant the seeds.  It really depends on the time of day with those.

  • @Splendora I always offer advice.  Usually I recommend learning the AK skills to get more from their harvests and I explain that the tool vendor buys as well as sells : ) I find it a bit cheeky when someone says they've no food on a street with 11 pigs, 7 chickens and 2 butterflies lmaooo.  When I do explain the free food available they just walk away....*sighs* Going to bed here.  I really do help the genuine newbie.  I've lost count of the number of bigger bags I've had to buy because I keep giving mine away :D :D :D

  • I live right next door to Kipacre Greens (until the new housing takes effect that is) and I'll pop in from time to time to tend to the messy plots, but now I think I may plant some spinach or other crops for those who come by and need them. I don't harvest the crops myself, I leave those for whoever needs them, as the signs say "Harvest what you need", and I don't need them.

As far as begging goes, I don't see much of that, and I tend to ignore people who ask me for currants and whatnot.

  • I fertilized every single plot in Groddle Heights twice....I'm finally done!
Posted 9 months ago by ❅Cobalt❅ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I plant for those who need them too! I plant my own crops in my garden.  I just find it sad that someone will clear the entire garden and not replant a single seed.  Give the good will that you've just taken yourself is all I'm hoping for : )

  • I've seen people beg for currants because they were out of energy...which makes no sense. Soooo, I whip out my handy dandy RK Rainbow and bestow several times..."problem" solved.

  • I'm always happy to give to people randomly, particularly when they're not *asking* but I know there's a need.  That being said, yes..I've seen more beggars and hooverers than ever lately.  I've also caught them using alt accounts, making claims of no money but turning around and buying and selling multiple 50k houses in a day, trying to extort money out of people by doing unglitchy things and saying they'll stop if they're paid, getting something from someone and then claiming they have no money again one street over...blah.  It takes all kinds, I guess.

  • I've decided now to just block anyone I believe to be a dubious alt.  Genuine alts are fine, but not of the begging and taking only variety ;) All but one of you in this thread are okay hehehehehe :O)

  • I'm always out of money. It's never stopped me playing. I've just put time and effort in. Although I'm not sure if it's because I'm on UK time that I've not been bothered by anyone.

  • Here's how I see it. Someone sees a new player and announces it on Global. Then people give stuff to the new player. I think while this is super nice, it encourages the new players to ask for more and more stuff after a little while. A new player was on Global Chat earlier today, and she sounded nice at first. After 30 minutes of people being nice and giving her stuff, she started to ask for currants. Her exact words were: "can someone give me more stuff? I need to buy a house." While it is super nice that people welcome newbies, it also worth noting that people need to tell them to be independent. It took me a month to buy a house. I was fine with it. When you inundate newbies with lots of information especially housing options, they will want that stuff immediately. So may be guide them to the wiki but let them do their own thing and not confuse them with things that are meant for higher level players.

  • I had one Glitchen ask me if I had any "extra" butterfly milk. Extra? No. I have plans for all of it.

I should mention we were in the middle of Groddle Forest and there were 6 butterflies flying above her head. Sigh.

  • LOL I can't stand when I plant something and wait for it while nursing it with guano and watering it and then some guy (or gal) comes up and waits right in front of me.  I am kind of like, "Do you need something?"  But of course, they don't respond.  Then, when the plants that I had nursed were FINALLY ready, BOOM!  With surprising agility, they take everything there.
And with the begging newbies, yeah I have people asking me for money a lot.  Sometimes I can OBVIOUSLY see that they are trying to rip me off.  One time, this level 9 told me he was the creator of the game and that I had better be nice to him.  I was a little bit wary just in case but I asked him for proof.  He took out A BUBBLE TUNER and said that was what creators always carried around.  Man!  Those newbies are out to get us lol!
Sometimes you feel bad for them because they are homeless and broke but sometimes you can tell that they are lying.  I will admit, I was a moocher in my single digit levels but I learned it doesn't make it better for anybody to basically steal.
