Restaurant

Requires a license given by the Bureaucratic Hall that turns a house into an open structure where people can freely come & go and purchase food items.
Requires Cheffery III, Blending II, Cocktail Crafting II, Saucery II, Grilling II, Master Chef II

Devs should probably dedicate a sort of "commercial space" for that, but turning your house into one would be cool. However, if that was the case, only one house in a given location will be allowed by the Bureaucratic Hall to be converted.

Just an idea though. :D

  • Love the concept, but what I really want is a pushcart that I can load with high-value goodies, and take around to the mines.

I can see having a business skill tree that requires Papers, and multiple skills in your field, as suggested above.

Like "jeweler" who uses gems and precious metals to make jewelry.

  • Great idea. I would love to be able to create an 'official' business in Glitch.

  • I like this idea, and want to add another layer to it:

When you are a ready to start your restaurant business, it would be cool if you had to go purchase a property on a commercial street. But the property wouldn't have a building on it yet, just an empty lot. You would have to hire a builder (another player with a different set of skills; a new carpentry skill tree maybe, blockmaking, etc) and gather necessary materials before the builder could get to work. Or maybe it would even require a number of other players to help with. For instance, building a food service business could require:
    - A business license from the Bureaucratic Hall
    - The services of a master mason (another glitch player)
    - The services of a master carpenter (another glitch player)
    - A sign maker (another glitch player)
    - The services of an interior designer (another glitch player)
    - A list of required materials (can be provided to the building "project" by anyone who wants to help

Each one of those requirements could have their own little way to make the building unique. For instance, the master mason player could have a number of different building types to choose from. The mason would then work with the property owner to choose the favored type of building, which would then adjust the required materials. Same for the carpenter, who could customize the walls and floors of the interior to the owner's liking. Same for the sign maker and interior designer.

I'm sure something like this would take a lot of dev work to pull off, but I think it would be pretty awesome and a natural next step beyond street projects.

  • Yes, great idea!  Would be nice for other sorts of businesses, too.

If it were based out of someone's house, then it might be a problem to advertise/find it.  Having it on a street would make it easy to stumble upon, but then we'd risk cluttering up popular streets with miscellaneous vendor carts.

How about having Market areas, similar to apartment housing areas (so all the doors can be easily seen) where you could buy or rent a shop? That way people could just mouse-over the door to see info about the shop.  Or even better, add a way for a door sign with a brief message to be editable by the shop owner, e.g. Merek's Glitchburgers and Ale.

You'd have to obtain appropriate business licenses from the bureaucrats before you could establish your business.  Initially shops would be tiny, but you could spend currants or resources to build-out/improve your shop, perhaps adding additional sales counters/capacity.

As for staffing, that's tricky.  While it would be great to be able to keep the shop open while you're offline, that might entail having to hire a "shop spirit" to sell your items for you.  What are the wages for a Shop Spirit?  Would you have to pay taxes on the goods you sold?  What happens when you run out of inventory?

It's fun to ponder!  I'd love to see this kind of capability added to the game.

(shawn responded while I was typing mine.  Love the idea of building a shop using advanced building materials!)

  • All of these ideas are exactly what I think need to be used throughout the game. If we end up with Group Lodges in game, if we want house expansions, if we want to make businesses, etc. Power to the players!

  • ++ love the idea of users using other user skills to build things.

maybe some templates to choose from to start, or shapes you can put together how you want..

  • And other means of customizing with color, similar to what Lt suggests for dyes: http://beta.glitch.com/forum/ideas/2950/

Maybe you could customize wall/floor textures and colors, e.g. stone floor (created from pieces of rocks mined), or hardwood floors built from planks then stained the color you want.

  • Yes, something like that would be nice. Rubies make red walls, diamonds make white walls, etc. :D

And yuh, those higher level skills should be a requirement as it proves that you have invested time and effort to learn. You have proven yourself worthy to start something.

As for commercial spaces, I think they should be on a "for rent" basis with a resting period between leases. This would give more players the opportunity to test out the feature.

  • Hell yeah, a coffee shop a la Amsterdam, serving coffee with no-no :)

Love the idea of "for rent" - would be an incentive to get the punters in or the business goes under.

  • +1  Love the idea of player run businesses that require cooperation and specialized skill sets to start and build.
