Gardening Farmville Styleeee...

So here I am, on my fancy new rooftop, harvesting a bunch of tomatoes...slowly..and I was wondering if you have any plans to implement the ability to click one patch after another, without waiting for the previous action (harvesting, watering or whatever) to finish? I'd love to have the option to queue the gardening tasks like this, it does get a little boring clicking...waiting...clicking the next one...waiting...and so on. I guess I have a strong streak of impatience when it comes to menial tasks such as this.

While we are on the subject of Farmville...which I sort of was....are there any plans to introduce crop withering if they are left for a period of time...and how about other tools to harvest (etc) more than one plot at once?

*goes back to harvesting her tomatoes*........click......waits......click........waits...........

  • I'm firmly against crop withering.

    It's not fun when you are required to spend time in a game just to keep from losing things.

  • Here's something Farmville doesn't have (as far as I know) that I think would be a cool implementation into the game: CROSS-BREEDING. Maybe we could add a "Genetic Greenery" skill or some mutated form of Botany, lol, and be able to plant two crops next to each other in order to get cross-bred crops!

  • @Cerulean - FV did introduce crop cross-breeding but it was very limited to crops they chose...it died out as everyone got bored of it...they aren't very good at keeping ideas going sadly.

    @Windborn Yup it's a real pain...but I had to ask - I'm weird like that.

  • "I'm firmly against crop withering."

    Ditto. Anything that *requires* me to play on a schedule not of my making would be a no-no.

  • Ugh, I'm against the micromanaging but it would only make sense for them to wither.

  • If I have to come back to my house every five minutes because my crop will die if I don't then there won't be any point in going out to do anything. If I want to play Farmville I can play Farmville.

  • there isn't withering really right now but the water runs out on your garden patch eventually. then it looks like your items have dried up. but all you have to do to harvest them is water the patch again and they are good to go.

    so the withering is kind of already there...and so is the solution - you don't have to adhere to a schedule, if you wait forever, you just have to water more

  • -1 - I don't want to be compelled to show up at a given time for fear that my crops will die - I'm already nervous about how frequently I'll need to log into the game to water tree and refill pig feeders.

    You might notice that you can keep a bottle of milk in your bag for 5 weeks, too.  Try that in real life without it spoiling.  ;-)

    -1 to 'automated queueing' for actions.   Part of the decision to garden is deciding to spend the real life time clicking through the actions.  Without this everything races toward a win button.  No thanks.  For example, to garden, I can choose to buy the seeds or to make them myself.  From there, I can choose to plant cabbage (long growing cycle) or spinach (very short growing cycle).  Either way, the 'sticky points' (what repetitive task I want to do now) are game decision points - both for how many IRL clicks you want to make for the time you have and for how many in-game XP/bonuses/etc you want your character to get.

    Then again, I'm -1 anything FV. ;-)

  • No withering! I do not want the game to ever force me to login to maintain stuff or else I'll lose it. If I can't play for a week or two, I shouldn't have to.

  • I'm not keen on withering either although something along those lines would sort of make sense.

    I would very much like to have the option to 'fast-click' plots though, as clicking to water each one and waiting for the animation to complete, then doing the next one.....then doing it all over again for planting or cleaning up etc ...gets very old, very fast. Whether you like FV or not, an awful lot of people hated the 'click & wait' mentality of it in it's early days, leading Zynga to introduce faster, more convenient methods which proved a very popular decision.

  • Pleeeease no Zynga formats in this game whatsoever!

  • Agree, no withering or dying of crops other than what is already implemented.  This penalizes people that have real lives and may be out of town or busy with other things.  What is currently implemented, like Mimi described is plenty enough...so I have to water before harvesting...that's cool, and not that much of a big deal.

    The 'faster' harvesting option could be one of those higher level skills that will be introduced in the future...along with that, you'd need to buy some sort of expensive harvester to use (a new currants sink for those higher level players that need that sort of thing) - then it is still in keeping with the decisions to make way of play...I keep doing it the slow, cheap way, or I can learn a skill that takes a long time, and then buy an expensive item to finally get some convenience. You'd still have to balance it with other skills you want to learn and other expensive items you want to purchase...Maybe the harvester is something you can set near the garden, like the butterfly milkers, meat collectors, and piggy feeders vice taking a slot in your inventory.

  • Maybe have baskets, so our crops go directly into them, rather than our inventory. Piggy troughs instead of the piggy feeder. We can fill the troughs beyond 80 deposits. Nothing to bulky as folks like to hide the feeder. No matter how many bigger bags I carry I fill them. Freeing up space in our inventory without cluttering floor/garden space. We only have the storage cabinet and floor at home. Also not a fan of rush home to garden, fb revolves around timings it's such a bore. RL interrupts such games, only to get back to withered crops and wasted time and energy. When things become a chore versus fun it gets old and tiring/boring. IMO fb is successful through social interaction in games. NOT for the games stand alone.

  • I have to giggle... because crops already wither. They wither many hours after the patch goes dry, and automatically revive when you water them. Everyone is getting all vocal against something that happens so rarely, most people don't know it happens : D

  • I would hate to find withered crops, I very much love the way they look when in 'full bloom' so to speak, to me they are part of the decor during times when I'm not doing much growing/harvesting. Unsightly,withered crops is thee reason I no longer grow crops in Farmville ~and I refuse to pay for the ridiculously over-priced UnwitherRing!

  • I promise that this is the last time I'm going to post this in the forums, but anybody who wants crop withering should read this article about how farmville uses manipulation and human psychology to keep you coming back:

    Also, for queuing of clicks, try using your keyboard with the arrows and enter keys, it seems to be a fairly smooth interface.

  • @b3achy - I think that would be a great idea to have a a faster farming skill.
    @tweetypie - I love the basket idea!

  • Katlazam, really interesting article. It struck very close to home on a non-gaming level :/ I look forward to reading more on the site.
