House Expansion

I've only just expanded my house for the second time, and I noticed it expanded to the right. Does anyone else feel like this is counterintuitive? I expected it to expand to the left, because the front door feels like a fixed point to me.

I'd actually been decorating with this assumption in mind. My more tenuous and unfinished decorating had been to the left. It feels weird that I have to shift everything over to the right.

  • While I understand how you feel, expanding the house to the left would need to move everything in your yard.

  • Why would the yard be touched? The whole yard would just move over to accomodate the bigger house. Is there something technical that I'm not understanding?

  • This issue has been raised before because it is sort of confusing, but try to think of it like this:

Your street is one large space, divided roughly in half where your magic rock is located. The street can be expanded left and right of the rock.

So too, your house and back yard are one large space, divided roughly in half where your magic rock is located just outside your back door. Just like on your street, you can expand to the left of your rock or the right of your rock. Since your yard is on the left and your house is on the right, your house will only ever expand to the right (and your back yard will only ever expand to the left).

Hope that helps make it a little clearer :)

  • People are asking for the ability to have the house expand from inside the rear door or inside the front door, neither of which is more obviously "right". That seems like a reasonable request to me (although it complications the expansion UI a bit I suppose).

If foolbunny is right about the implementation, then one can translate the request as moving the X position of all the furniture inside the house to accomodate the expanded width. At any rate, I think we should consider enhancements on their merits and not try to second-guess the implementation issues (although I admit I tend to do that too :).

  • I posted a topic several weeks back about the same thing. I've avoided expanding it further because it always expands to the right and I'd like to make more space on the left and don't want to have to move all my stuff piecemeal to make it work.

I *guess the interpretation could be correct, but as far as I can tell, the house is a separate entity from the yard. They both have separate functions for enhancement, so I assume that the db handles the house as a separate entity.

Without some authoritative response from the developers on how it works it's all speculation. And so far, this "truth" is one born of players speculating how it work, then using the former speculations as fact and history for the suppositions.

  • Ah, Foolbunny's explanation does seem to fit the behavior. But even if it's correct, it still seems counterintuitive to me. Speaking as your average, unsofistimacated player, I think of my house and my backyard as two distinct entities. It would never occur to me that the rock was some sort of zero point on a horizontal scale that includes both the yard and the house.
