Deposit/Deposit What?/Uh, why???

When I am putting something into an SDB that already has some of that item in it, why does it prompt me a second time after I hit the 'Deposit' popdown on the box itself to ask me 'what' I want to deposit?  duh.  the only thing I can deposit.  More of the item that is already in the box.

Why is this extra layer of prompting necessary?  (rhetorical question- if you think you have an answer think a little harder.  or rethink the structures of your 'object-oriented design' if you've coded yourself into a trap)

  • I'd say it's either there as a fail-safe (in case of accidental clicking? maybe), the coding is imbedded really hard in there (which I wouldn't consider a "trap"; potentially it could fix other coding problems and the additional "deposit what?"-click is a small price to pay), OR they just haven't gotten around to fixing that yet. Of course, I know nothing of what's involved since I neither work for TS nor have I done a lick of game coding, but at least I thought as hard as I was able!

  • Sounds like a good answer to me!
I also "know nothing of what's involved since I neither work for TS nor have I done a lick of game coding ". :)

  • I suspect it is an accidental regression from one of the recent changes. I could swear on Friday morning I could hit deposit and then go straight to the quantity picker (which honors the 2-interaction guideline for UIs, no real need to add the 3rd interaction)

  • I recommend the easier approach personally.  If what you are doing is a pain, think about the problem from the other direction I've found.

Using your specific example with SDBs...  Instead of clicking the SDB and then clicking deposit, I prefer to simply grab the item from my bag and drag it to the SDB that already contains the same thing.  Then the only prompt is "How many" and the dialog conveniently appears with the "All" button directly under your mouse.  (Thus, drag to SDB, double click and move onto the next item.)

Another example in the same theory is that it's easier to drag potatoes onto the Still than it is to click the Still and select "Distill" and go through the prompt of what to distill, then how many, etc.  While in many cases keyboard commands are faster, there are a bunch where a little mouse drag n' drop wins every time.

An example of the other direction being easier for me is gardening.  I try to keep only a single type of seed of each type (meaning herb or veggie) in my bags at any given time.  Way faster than dragging a seed to a plot is to hit enter on a spot, hit enter again to select the only kind of seed I have, then hit the right arrow key and repeat.

Hope this helps.  A lot of things in the game can be flipped around like this so you can do them however you find is more convenient.

  • When there is a specific bag that I know something is in, it's certainly best to just drag-n-drop it to the SDB.  But some of the boxes on my wall are for the things harvested every day all the time, like beans, bubbles, grain, allspice, etc.  It's easy with the new SDB storage to not have to dig into the bags at all.

The fastest way to 'clean up' after a trip out and about gathering is to click on the various SDBs for common things.  In cases where the 'Deposit' verb is available, it means that particular stuff has accumulated in a bag/bags somewhere and needs to move to the SDB.  This is the fastest way to move things to storage.  Definitely faster than opening a bag, dragging-and-dropping, etc.
