Stealing is O.K.!

If you put amber down while trying to organise the stuff in your bags, it's mine, baby, and it ain't coming back!

  • Isn't there a period in which it's locked from prying fingers, now?

  • Yes it is. 30 mins or until you move away.
Posted 14 months ago by Heatseeker Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yes there is, and still people dare to threaten me with reports when i snatch something! The nerve theese people have...

  • 30 seconds, actually, not 30 mins?

Thanks for the warning, Bender Rodriguez! Maybe people will start talking about the time they got BenRo'd...

  • Wow Bender - such a bad ass!
Posted 14 months ago by MeherMan Subscriber! | Permalink
  • If someone takes half an hour to organise their bags in public, then they really shouldn't expect everything to stay where it's dropped o_o
However, if someone's standing next to something, I personally tend to assume that it's theirs and leave it alone. That's just the way I play though, I don't expect others to do the same.
Posted 14 months ago by Ebil Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yeah, 30 seconds is more than enough time to pick up an accidentally dropped item. :p After that, I expect It to be gone.

  • Well I thought Glitch was a different game, not about being the "best" on other peoples losses and growing rich by stealing form the poor. I thought we had enough of that in RL... But maybe I was wrong.
But it will still the way, I'm going to play it. Stealing is not fun for me, not even in games. So Bender, if you ever really need anything, just contact me. If I can, I will give it to you if I own it, so you don't have to steal it from others. They may be newbies who really worked hard for it.

  • Natz, how is someone poor if they've got their bags so full they actually need to drop some stuff to organise the goods? Thank you for your offer, but I've got all i need, I just like to steal!
Posted 14 months ago by Electric Wizard Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Hm, okay. You got a point there. Maybe I keep my "heal the wolrd"-thinking all to myself.

    ;)
Posted 14 months ago by NaTz the Badger Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Isn't it more if your bags are full and you get an amber whilst you are mining? I think then it's not locked to you like stuff you get when harvesting trees?

The first time I ever went mining (and before the lock was implemented in any case) this happened to me. Rather than a passing selfish glitch picking it up, the glitch I had helped mine asked me if my bags were full and proceeded to give me a bigger blue bag. At the time I had almost nothing and this blew me away. Those are the sort of glitches who make this game great IMO and I aim to pay it forward.

At the time I hadn't worked out how to make friends so I've no idea who it was. Whoever it was has my heartfelt gratitude!
Posted 14 months ago by geekybird Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @natz No, you were right. It's far more likely that valuable items will be dropped by newbies with no bags, per my experience above. Now I rarely run out of apace in my bags.
Posted 14 months ago by geekybird Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The way the issue of this sort of controversey was resolved, IMO, in another thread was as follows:

It isn't 'role play' to go out into an area where other people are not role playing and act like your actions are 'in the context of role play.' Role playing is a collective activity.

As such, deciding that 'your character is going to act in the role of a thief' and running off into the game to grab other peoples' stuff isn't legimiate role-play. It would be if the other people in the situation were aware that you were 'acting in the role of a thief' and playing along with you.

When someone drops an amber because their bags are full, it is an opportunity to be generous towards them. Every stranger you encounter in Ur is a potential new friend. Why cheat yourself by throwing away an opportunity?

  • Parrow, agree with what you are saying but at least he's not being sneaky about it.  Now I know to keep my diamonds close and my amber even closer when I see BenRo is on the move on my street.

I should probably take this opportunity to mention that I struggle with a very specific form of kleptomania called ssooninvmania.  I cannot keep from stealing small shiny objects of no intrinsic value. So..cheese pokers be warned!  I cannot, and will not, keep myself from stealing the fruits of your cheese poking.

As for them being or not being fruits...they are not cherries, eh?

  • I think what it comes down to, is that if you want to roleplay a twat, thats fine, but your going to get treated like a twat too, because of it.

People arent going to like you for stealing. People aren't going to think 'Ooh there goes someone increasing the variety of gameplay'

There could be a debate on whether your actions count as stealing, except for the fact you've made it clear that you're conceptualising it as steal, therefore you are, no bones about it, stealing.
Stealing aint good, it aint clever, it doesnt make the game better and you're going to annoy people. I'm sure it in itself isn't against the TOS but your attitude about it damn close to being griefing, which is.
Posted 14 months ago by SacredBob Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think it's decidedly unfair, because the people most likely to drop stuff *are* newbies who don't have extra bags or bags large enough yet.  I think what you're doing is really wrong and mean.  =(
Posted 14 months ago by ♪♥~ Auren ~♥♪ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I agree with most here. Most that drop stuff are fairly new to the game with less bag space and they need time to organize their bags to what is more important... what they should drop vs the item on the ground already. I agree, it is mean and getting a nice item from one that may need it more is just outright greedy.

@SacredBob you hit the nail on the head,  "I think what it comes down to, is that if you want to roleplay a twat, thats fine, but your going to get treated like a twat too, because of it."

  • I think, if a gang started it would be fun, even with no intention of joining, even if they stole from me.

    I find it funny.
Posted 14 months ago by River Bell Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I also agree with 'most', Casombra, and SacredBob's comment.

Unfortunately the 'most' have also argued in other threads that "Glitch lets me do whatever I like" (so you play your way and I'll play mine/don't impose your values on me). However, suddenly we seem to have developed values and are 'imposing' them via social behaviour (treating the OP unkindly because he was unkind).

Glitchen all, brave and free... :) we can't have both reckless hedonism AND a nice community too.

  • I believe we can have liberty without having "the war of all against all."  As one American jurist put it, your liberty extends as far as another person's nose.  The freedom of noses minding their own business does not logically entail the freedom of fists to punch those noses.
Posted 14 months ago by Splendora Subscriber! | Permalink
  • That's a nice general analogy, Splendora (thanks - I'm not American so it's interesting to see another viewpoint on liberty).  But analogies are illustrations, and don't actually help when a controversial situation arises.  What if "what I want to do" just so happens to be antisocial?  Like dropping paper cups in Ajaya, for example, or picking up notes as soon as you see them?  Or stealing, as in this thread?  Is that my fist punching your nose, or is that just my nose, leave my nose alone?

In addition, the fact remains that officially, Glitch does not uphold liberty, generally, without boundaries.  The Community Guidelines say, "There is no right way to play Glitch."  People have stretched this to mean "If I want, I do."  Hence, this thread...
Posted 14 months ago by Lara Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Whilst I love the libertarian borderline anarchic viewpoint of Glitch and I would never want glitch police on every corner confiscating my no-no or roughing me up for my hippy hair personally I just think it's a bit pathetic when someone swipes something of mine (being generally lazy and disorganized I often accidently run out of bag space - and now I think I'm gonna be stalked by BenRo for saying that :P)...all BenRo wants is attention and that's just sad.

If people are going to reorganize their bags in public, I suggest they find the end of a nice quiet street in a quarter somewhere and do it there.

  • Stealing is not OK!! Please put yourself in the shoes of the ones that you steal from, not a comfortable walk. I just had my ideals about the Glitchen society brought down more than a notch or two. A charitable and fun action was squashed by some lowlife theif! Makes me feel sorrowful and shamed that the community that I so heartily believed in could harbor such thoughtless and selfish people. What would your Mother or Grandmother say to you if she knew the type of things that you do? Have you No Pride or Shame? *Hanging my head in dissapointment and sadness*

  • I think many of you guys misunderstood what I'm saying. Also, I think too many glitchen are too serious. To be honest, I made this thread just to see reactions, and voila, a great idea has been born: a gang!

Here's a little BenRo (awesome) background - a lady glitchen dropped an amber somewhere in Uralia. I didn't know what her reaction would be, I was curious and I figured it would be a good laugh if she chased me to get her amber back. And yes, she chased me through a level and I thought it was awesome! The lady glitchen got her amber back and also a key to Ajaya Bliss.

There are many quests, one of them being fixing a tinkertool with another, where a glitchen depends on another glitchens trust (if a glitchen is low on currants). I tested this a few times and to my surprise - there was not one glitchen who refused to borrow me their tinkertool! Ofcourse they all got their tinkertool back, and a little extra food or drinks and a big thank you!

My goal here was not to investigate the morality of glitchen, but a mere laughter inducing role-play, and although the point was mostly missed, I'm happy, 'cus I'm drunk.

Silvaa, Bender Bending Rodríguez need not attention, Bender Bending Rodríguez IS attention, baby!

Sorry I got too serious, I just followed that strange discussion about keygrapping before and got a little sad about how some people take there "I'm the best f**k the rest" -attitude in here...

I always think the fun stops where you ruin it for others, but your way of fun is fun!

  • The 30 secs thing doesn't work all of the time, by the way.  I've lost stuff even though I have been standing on it right after I dropped it.
Posted 14 months ago by Serra Subscriber! | Permalink
  • If there's one thing people should take from this thread (ha!), it's this: If your stuff is important to you, keep an eye on your inventory...and if you're organizing bags, for giants' sakes don't do it on a busy, public street if you're going to be dropping items!
Posted 14 months ago by VorpalCheese Subscriber! | Permalink
  • A couple of notes, then you guys can go back to your regularly scheduled bickering:

    1) Items that fall to the ground because your inventory is full are locked to you: "Good news for pack rats: Items dropped because your inventory is full will now lock to you for 30 seconds, or until you walk away." - @glitchlog, Oct 19

    2) This leads me right into my next point.  I've seen people drop something, move away from it, move back over it, and then appear surprised that it isn't locked to them anymore.  As noted above, the game assumes that if you walk away from your thing, you don't want it anymore.  Now, if you think there needs to be a greater tolerance (for example, that you need to leave a screen before that kicks in or it just waits the full 30 seconds), I wholeheartedly encourage you to start a new thread suggesting that.  I hear the Ideas forum is a good place to put your ideas.

    3) The word "twat" used as an insult denigrates the speaker more than anyone else.  It's also astoundingly misogynistic.  If you mean jerk, say jerk*.  Don't equate female anatomy to boorish behavior unless you enjoy antagonizing roughly half of the world's population (in which case, the value of your calling out someone making jokes about stealing items in a video game is in serious question).  Also, it looks even worse when you follow it by admitting that you know where the word came from and the original meaning, ascribe it to others ("other cultures"), and completely fail to apologize.  When someone tells you that you're being offensive, especially when they give you the benefit of the doubt and imply it was unintentional? You apologize.  You don't get publicly defensive, or say "Well it's not what I meant!"  Communication takes two people.  One to speak, one to interpret, and both roles matter.  We know what you meant.  We (or I, at least) are trying to tell you that your choice of words matters, and that in the future you need to choose a different one.

    * Or blockhead, numbskull, boor, cad, churl, scoundrel, villain, louse, cur, miscreant, rogue, jackanape, scamp... that's all I care to think of off the top of my head. If none of those work for you I suggest a good thesaurus.

  • Watch out Mr Rodriguez is a great bi-winning. Pay attention to the man because he's one example of virtude, leadership and a good friend indeed - you can trust him your life. :] He wins here and wins there, just doesn't win much of IQ/XP unfortunately.
Let me troll a little bit too then: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFlcqWQVVuU (ONE AMBER ON THE FLOOOOOOOR!! OH MY GOD, OH MY GOD!)

EDIT: Ok, so it's was only to see the reactions... haven't read that before. Good one: http://www.glitch.com/forum/general/10745/112192/
But actually wouldn't surprise me much anymore with the actual state of things. Some days ago there was this case about a girl that harvest cleared the tree and answered rudely to me: "I do what I want". Worse it that she's actually right because there are no rules about how to play the game. But I would dare to say that there are the rules of common sense (and minimum of respect towards to others).

  • I have had the experience of someone taking my gems when I didn't realise my bags were full while mining and the gems did not lock at my feet for even a few seconds!

I added the thief to my blocked list and now I know Bender is that sort of person I'll add him to my blocked list so I can avoid accidentally interacting with him in future too.

Not trying to start anything - I'm just fussy about the sort of people I want to mix with - you can steal all you want but, if you do, I don't want to know you!
