Allowing People In Your House

There needs to be an option to toggle some friends to be allowed to enter your home without knocking. This would be useful if i am not online to open the door. They cannot, however, open the door for anyone else. Only the owner would be able to.

Perhaps I could charge rent to my roommates....

  • If one of the shop keepers could "copy" keys so you could then have a physical object to give them called a "key". Then we'd also have to have a physical lock smith come change the locks or buy new locks. Perhaps if each key had a pin associated with it set by the carrier...

Surely some of the more creative types can come up with better ideas.

  • i really like the physical key metaphor, maybe with special "bags" just for keys called keychains, but ...

but the thing is, having key objects is actually sort of inefficient.

you have to get them made, distribute them, keep them on hand .. and you'd have to make sure that the keys and pins weren't shared around behind your back.

the simplest system for granting house entry permissions would be to have players go down their friend list and check off the people who they'd like to be able to enter their house [houses?]

but i do like keys. there'd be something more emotionally satisfying about receiving a key than being added to a permissions list. the question is whether that emotional satisfaction would be worth the very real drop in efficiency and [perhaps] security.

  • Keychain that gets keys when you are added to a permission list? IE keys are nontransferable, and let you in

  • "IE keys are nontransferable, and let you in"

then you need a whole logic for preventing keys from being removed from packs, preventing other people from removing them .. and maybe the person you give the key to doesn't want a slot taken up.

plus you'd have to articulate to the player that unlike every other item in the game, this one is non transferrable.

  • I still like the original idea of having a whitelist of roommates. Would really help motivate me to be social in-game...

  • What I've wondered is how big of a need there will be for it. I've only wanted into others' houses to see what the interior was like. It's a secure way of making a resource available, but I don't know yet if I'd need that or for how long.

  • I've been asked a number of times while in-game to allow people into my house and I've always said no because it is a) such a mess and b) not secure. I would like people to go in and have a look but not really be able to touch anything whether I'm in-game or not.

I'd also like to make a cupboard or storage area available to named players. That way I (and they) could store excess items there with the idea they are available for use by any of us. I don't really relish the idea of carrying around a lot of peat, guano or earth with me all the time nor do I always want to go home to fetch it if it's needed for a project.

  • bluto, I find it funny that you don't want players to see your "messy" home. I really don't think they would think less of you!

in the same vein, I would like to be able to let strangers in but also to set the terms. Six of them knocked on my door on Saturday, two left thank-you gifts, one friended me and two stole something. Or one stole two things, not sure which.

Anyway, if someone is knocking I would like the option to let them have full access (to the floor, not the trophy case or the cupboard) or just let them window shop, as it were.

And, to promote in-game manners, when they try to leave, a dialogue for them that allows them to send a thank you message and/or friend their absent host.

ETA: A big thank you to Mina who let me use her garden to complete the Onion quest. My flat in G Towers does not have a garden. It worked great and I got a warm feeling all over from it.

  • I have always had an open door policy. This last test someone stole my butterfly milker, which was annoying, but one poor guest out of all the people I've let inside is not so bad. Then again it probably helps that I don't leave much out on my floor and I haven't had the milk and meat collectors for long.

Keys or a whitelist sound good but I would enjoy having a way to send thank you messages or notes even more. I think that would encourage me to knock on strangers' doors.

  • I also wish we could do tag sales from our homes instead of just from the auction page. Inthe game Animal Crossings, once a month or once a week, you can sell your items and you can even haggle over the price. Of course, haggling with an NPC is a rather short story with no twists and turns, so i would much rather do it with other players.

  • note that once the game is live we will have our facebook friends in-game, i hope our RL friends will be much less likely to steal from us than strangers.....

  • Facebook friends are not always RL friends. In fact the people that play Farmville and similar games are likely to have dozens of complete strangers as friends. That is almost certain to be the case in Glitch too where the identity of any player is not obvious and collaborations on projects may lead one to press the friend button with little thought. Therefore allowing people access to a house without allowing them to pick up or use items would still be a boon to us wary types.

  • There will definitely be permission lists who can enter your house (without knocking). This may be represented to you as a keychain UI widget with a key for every place you have access to (but this would not be a normal game item, not stored in your inventory, etc.)

It will almost certainly be based on categories of friends which you determine (and which you can use to sort your friends list for other in-game purposes).

There may or may not be shared housing in the sense of the normal houses we have now and room-mates situation, but there will definitely be group-owned buildings with shared storage, etc., so you could have a small group and live in a room-mate co-op kind of setup.

  • There should be an option to make your house open to the public by default. As long as they don't break my stuff, I don't mind if people look around.

  • I love the idea of shared accommodation. My friends and I had already discussed trying to buy houses in the same district so we could be neighbours. We were also hoping to eventually get shared access to each house with out having to knock as we were hoping to be able to borrow tools, pots etc if needs be.Also helping out with quests if like Nanooki you don't have a garden. Pretty much the same thinking as bluto +1
It's all about trust. There are people I already know and would let in my house to do as they please and others I would let in but don't know well enough to feel I could leave stuff just lying around.
I like the idea of a "spare key" If I give you one then you have full access, other wise you have to knock. Then your allowed in but are not able to pick anything up.

@ Nanooki Nackhouse do you still play AC and do you ever use ACC? I love this game. Glitch reminds me of it alot, yet is totally different if that makes scene :)

  • @RobotGymnast - I wouldnt feel right going into anyones house that I didnt know unless I was invited. Nor would I want strangers just wandering thru my house either. I would however like to be able to inspect inside the vacant houses before purchasing.

Like Misha, I would love to be able to give my friends a 'key' to come and go whether I was online or not (being in Australia my times arent always convenient to many of my friends) I currently leave most of my large items/tools out for any of my friends to use.

  • How about a Lock/Unlock option?

I kind of like the idea of doing more with the Garden Gnomes. Maybe different types of Garden Gnomes... perhaps a Hostess Gnome who could greet people as they entered - then give a report back to the owner of who was there and what they interacted with (if desired).

Or maybe a 'guest list'... good for one game day, with a setting of Any - and a Revoke Early option. This would work even without a Gnome, but it would be really cool with one. They could allow invited guests in, and politely relay any outside requests to the owner.

There's a whole wealth of things... but Lock / Unlock is the most basic. It allows people who like privacy to keep the door locked, and those who have frequent visitors to leave the doors open and take the risks. (It's also fairly basic to program I *think*)
