Official IRC channel

As the subject says, pretty please?
Right now I am in 3 different unofficial glitch IRC channels that I found on the forums, they average between 1 and 4 users. Then there is the Glitchbook chat that isn't IRC.
Could we please have one IRC that is official that we all know and use so that we're not spread over many different servers and websites.

  • i'm pretty sure that by the time glitch put together an chat channel worth of their brand, the game would already be up 24/7.

the "official IRC channel" is the game itself.

  • The point is I may want to talk about the game when I'm either away from my computer or don't feel like playing or when the server is down. And some of us are just addicted to IRC.
I dunno, I guess I'm used to every game I play having an IRC channel, I miss it.

    There's an unoffical IRC.

  • There are 3 unofficial IRC channels, actually. I mentioned it in my original post.

  • +1 for official IRC channel, to ease communication between testers and devs. Most of the games I have beta tested have had this form of communication outside of game channels.

Could also do with podcasts telling us what needs testing if there is anything in particular

  • +1 Araldia, for devs telling us what needs testing. I often feel I'm left in the dark, would love some input on what I should try and break.

  • I just noticed Stoot on another thread stated that they have an internal IRC, that could mean that an official one for us all to pop in to could be possible

  • Staff uses IRC to communicate internally, and their server should certainly be kept private.  It's simple to set up a server, though, and it could be a good idea to have one for testers.  I'd want all addresses spoofed, and/or whois and certain other commands disabled, for privacy and security reasons.  Players would remain anonymous to each other, only identifiable via nicknames, as they are here.

One thing to note: unofficial chat systems are not "secure" by any means, and a disturbing story was floating around during the last test about a player having what he/she thought was a private conversation on one of these systems, and then hearing a log of the conversation being read aloud on an internet radio station.  Please don't assume that third-party services purporting to be Glitch-related will necessarily have your best interests in mind.

The only other problem I see with an IRC server, from a company perspective, is that we might be less likely to post in the forums between tests... but I think we might post more constructively after having bounced ideas around in conversation.

  • Why complicate things?

Staff have set up a forum where people can post and discuss all their ideas:  good, bad, and looney*.   What is the benefit of fragmenting the conversations?  Do you really expect staff to look in multiple internet locations to find out what testers are thinking?

*[no offense to my Canadian friends, eh?]

  • I think the main attraction is that IRC is much more instantly gratifying than a drawn-out forum conversation.

  • I still don't see any reason that Tiny Speck should devote resources (staff time monitoring the channel, maintaining the chat on their servers, etc) to an official IRC channel.  There is no economic benefit to doing that.

There is, actually, no reason that Tiny Speck has to supply all the game benefits.  For example, the wiki is not a Tiny Speck effort.  The API allows anyone to create game-enhancing tools, not just devs.  There are many reasons to allow players themselves to set up and maintain IRC channels.

Just don't expect your ideas to be considered if you post them in a temporary chat rather than a permanent forum.

  • glum pudding that arguement of *unoffical* not unsecure is not viable at all *offical* chat rooms are just as much unsecure, it all depends on who is running it. just because someone works for a company or has stated something *offical* has nothing todo with the abilitie of the programmer and the person monitoring it there is no difference between the two other than the company saying we affiliate ourself with this or not. and tbh it is usually programs made by companies that are less insecure.... next you'll say microsoft doesnt get hacked 1000+ times a day.

the best scripts and programs are made by *unoffical means* linux/unix/ open source users. are far more *safe than your offical operating systems.

you should actually think before trying to downgrade something you know nothing about

  • She was saying not to assume security on 3rd party servers.  The first part of what she said shows that she is aware that they can be secure.

  • Yes, you should really think before you downgrade somebody you know nothing about, eh?

  • no she was stating that 3rd party servers are by *no means secure* just because someone is offical doesnt make it anymore secure than something none offical. go checkout sonys latest miss-hap

  • Windborn: I don't think anyone would expect TS to constantly scan IRC channels for good ideas.  People just want to be able to talk to each other while the game is closed.  (Personally, I am neutral on the idea.)

Lt: you are arguing points which I never made, and would never make.  I don't know how open source programming or any other non sequiturs came into this.  Suffice it to say that some testers assumed that other testers were trustworthy, and they weren't.  If you don't trust Sony, well, great.

  • If there is an official Glitch IRC channel, then someone from Glitch will need to be readily available to deal with various interpersonal strife and barbarians.   You can't have something "official" that is allowed to run amok with no staff responsibility.

If people want to talk with each other when the game is closed, there are unofficial channels readily available that do not require Glitch staff to keep an eye on things.

  • Sheesh, whatever. Somebody close this thread of something.
Posted 19 months ago by Fussycat Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think what the original intent of the word "official" was in this thread was not meaning "run officially by the devs" but rather "a common channel to all Glitches that everyone is made aware of." Just like the wiki would not be helpful if it were 3 smaller somewhat overlapping wikis, none of which were comprehensive or known to all players, neither are separate channels that only a few people use and no one really knows about. I don't think it was intended by the OP (though correct me if I'm wrong) that it would run by Tiny Speck or anything of that nature.

Not that I really have a stake in this argument since I don't use IRC, but I do have a love of efficiency. :D

  • Someone set up an IRC channel several weeks ago, but the times I visited, it was rather empty.   It would be nicer if there was a chat channel that ran on the site during non-play hours, so while we are all obsessively clicking around in the Forums, Encyclopedia, Locations, etc etc we could be chatting too.

IRC's also require obtaining a client application, I won't touch the security thing but maybe there's that who knows, but in general, if we are "here", on the site, it would nice to converse "here".

  • Last I saw, IRC was pretty much abandoned for glitchbook chat.
Posted 19 months ago by Tingly Claus Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Tingly: that's the one I would strongly recommend against.  :(

Maybe a glitch.com chat interface, accessible to testers while the game is closed, would be the best option.  No one would have to install an IRC client.

  • Glum seriously what the hell is your problem with glitchbook. there is nothing wrong with it at all. I am in and out there all day the chat is safe as anything. quit putting it down. in your personal vendettas. plenty of us use it and more are welcome to come use it. certain people have worked hard on it and it is growing to be a nice little area for us to chat and be around while game is down. "just like people are wanting and asking for"  but clearly people will just be put back in the middle of wanting something like a chatroom or ircl if your slamming it down for no proven reasons
Posted 19 months ago by Hootaholic Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Glum, perhaps you should at least take a look at Glitchbook before criticising it. I have never seen you in the chat.
Posted 19 months ago by Fussycat Subscriber! | Permalink
  • fwiw, you can get the chatzilla add-on for firefox that will let you access IRC through your browser here: addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fi...

  • I can see that Glum still has a wasp in an orifice about Glitchbook, yet still doesn't have a decent reason why.  Checking the logs, I can see that Glum hasn't signed up for it and therefore hasn't seen the features it offers.  Nor has she even seen the chatroom of a night, IRC or not.

As I've said before, if people want to use it, even just for the chat room, they are more than welcome to.  If not, hey its no biggy, and I dont see any laws about if you're a Glitcher you HAVE to sign up.

I provide Glitchbook.com as a place for people to hang out when the game is offline.  Since being told not to advertise it I haven't (which seemed to be your initial beef with me).  The 45+ Glitchers who DID sign up did so by either by reading the forum post (posted before I was told not to advertise) and deciding they'd try it, or through word of mouth.  Either way, Glitchbook.com and its chat room give quite a lot of people a place to interact with other glitchers and friends.

At the end of the day, I'm not going to have a verbal slanging match with you or anyone, after all, people are entitled to their opinion.  But your constant tirade of abuse and negativity against GB and it's users is both unfair and un-called for.  We all know your opinion about Glitchbook and me in particular.  I even PM'ed you in game and asked if we could start afresh, which you agreed to.  And now, here you are, spouting hate towards me and my site again.

I personally invite you to come and try out the very site you despise so much, try out the features, have a natter in the chatroom and see what people are using and enjoying.

Maybe then you'll have a balanced and just opinion of the service that I'm paying £10 a month out of my own pocket for every month, to provide free to glitchers who want to use it.
