Does anyone know if Glitch will run on an Asus Eee PC Netbook~?

.. what the title says..  I've been in need of a new notebook for awhile but the problems with the one I have are so untenable I am stepping up my search, and it looks like an Asus Eee PC Netbook might fit my needs and budget nicely.  What I need to know though is if it will run Glitch??

It says it comes with Windows 7, 1 GB RAM and an AMD Radeon HD 6250 graphics card.  I don't know much about PCs anymore though since I've been a mac girl for years now... so someone who knows more than me help me out please? ^_^  I'd also love to play Second Life again if that's still around...

~ Thanks for reading ~

  • Going from a Mac to Windows?! I could never! o_o As for running Glitch, it should run it just fine. I'm sure SL will run too.

  • I play mainly on a N120 Samsung netbook with 2 Gig of mem, and to be honest its only borderline ok, expect quite a lot of browser restarts, cache clearing and farting about to keep Glitch running smoothly, Flash is a bit of a pain like that.

I think 1 Gig of mem will be very tight, you'll want to expand, (although the limit might be 2Gig anyway depending on chipset and processor)

  • I have an acer aspire net book and the game runs ok but the screen is too small. I can't see the stuff in my bags and there aren't scroll bars to help so it's a little annoying.

  • Lol Demaria no, my main computer is my mac but it's an old one and won't run the new flash, which I use constantly for gaming >_<;  It's my dedicated graphics machine though which I use for all of my art always.  If I could afford it for sure I'd upgrade to a new mac in a heartbeat, I just don't have that kind of money at the moment.  Or ever haha. XD  ~ My notebook I use for going places and writing, and of course gaming, because I can sit on my sofa with it unlike my behemoth of a mac.  That way I can still  be online after my husband gets home and wants to watch shows and stuff with me.

Thanks nobbinobody for your input!  Can I ask, what browser are you running?  ~ Right now I'm using Chrome and it seems to be ok, and, my notebook doesn't have nearly as much RAM as the netbook does.

Maybe I'll see if one of the electronics stores nearby has one I can try out before purchase...

  • I'm told that it will work (assuming that you have the memory, natch), but that you really need to full-screen it to be able to see anything.

  • Does that netbook have another version that offers more RAM? Not sure how it works for a netbook but running Win7 on 1GB RAM sounds kinda bad...

  • Humm.  Thanks Djabrill.  What do you mean by full-screen it?  You mean with the browser window?  Because I do that anyways all the time..... ::confused::

Edit ~ Elly I will look, but I think to upgrade it with more RAM costs a lot more money and of course budget is a factor... Right now I'm running Windows Vista (2006 & Business version) on my notebook with less than 1 GB RAM and it seems to work ok...
Edit2 ~ also I checked and the screen size for the Asus is the same as my notebook I'm using right now has....

  • If it has an Atom processor it probably is memory constrained to 1G.  I have a first generation Asus Eee PC 4G and it came with 512M but was upgradable to 2G.  The screen resolution is probably a big issue as well.  Mine has a really really small low rest screen.  It's only 640 pixels wide.  I ran Glitch on it once, the chat part of the screen was bigger than the playing part.  But the Eee PC you are considering is certainly a much newer model than mine, which is a 2008 era machine that I bought on eBay for $80.

  • Miso: I've run it on ff and chrome, mainly chrome currently, find the full screen mode better, and it works nicely on a 10 inch (1024*600) screen in full view. No real difference in performance.

  • On the specs page it says it has an AMD C-30 1.20 GHz processor.

& Thanks everyone for the input!  Nobbinonobody that is good to know.  ^_^

  • Like Octo I have tried it on an Aspire with 1 GB. It wasn't as good as my regular laptop but it was ok as long as I didn't have anything else running and didn't end up on a street with a lot of other Glitchen and lag. The small screen was a big issue for me - had problems accessing my bags. I use that one for quickie things but for long term playing it would frustrate me too much.

  • When someone says to full screen it, you can either go into the options/tools menu on the browser and select full screen or use the F11 key to make the browser go to a full screen.  Then, especially on the netbooks, you get scroll bars and will be able to see your inventory/bags.

Netbooks typically run quite a bit slower than a regular laptop or PC, often due to the memory limitation.  As long as you aren't in a rush, it should be an ok substitute, but getting a regular laptop would be better.  However, if it is what you have, then it should work.  I use both netbooks (when on travel) and my laptop (at home).  Laptop is better, but I also have much faster internet at home than in a hotel or on a wireless...so it may have a bit to due with the internet connection as much as the hardware.  Good luck!

  • Oh Botia good to know!  Someone who already uses one and doesn't have problems.  Thanks!

It's interesting to me what you said (anonymouse) about the small screens, and others have echoed this, because I have a small screen on the laptop I have right now and haven't had any problems.  Then again I play on fullscreen anyways.... :: shrugs ::

Thanks beachy ^_^  Good to know.  Increasingly I am getting used to the idea of trying it out before I buy... whether in store or maybe find a friend with one.  I have enough geek friends I'm sure one of them has an Asus netbook XD !

  • It runs OK on my Eee PC Seashell. I would expect lag on a busy street but logging in to feed my piggies and tend crops on my netbook works just fine.  I have an Atom N550 model so I suspect it might be a slightly better computer than the one you're looking at.  I upgraded to 2 gigs of RAM, which is the max for the processor.  Don't even consider trying to run an Eee PC with only 1 gig.  Windows is too much of a memory hog. The RAM upgrade only cost me about $25 including shipping direct from Crucial and it's simple to install.

The only way to play Glitch on a netbook on a 600x1024 screen is to set your browser to fullscreen. Otherwise your bags are cut off and there is no way to access them. At fullscreen the game window functions fine.

  • I'm wondering if Glitch will work on an OLPC XO-1... I've got one (that I mostly use as a dedicated ebook reader- I've found it a lot sturdier and more versatile for that purpose than either a Kindle or a Nook), but sorta wonder if I can get Glitch to work on it, particularly due to its OLPC-specific OS. Hmm...

  • Running Glitch on my Acer Aspire One (AOD250) with 2GB of RAM (the max for this machine) WinXP SP3 and Firefox 9 (beta) -- to fit everything on the 1024x600 screen the best solution I've come up with is setting the taskbar to autohide and turning off the navigation, menu and add-on bars in Firefox; Fullscreen (F11) doesn't seem to work well with Flash for some reason (goes out of fullscreen when the mouse hits the top of the screen.)

Performance-wise, it helps to have only the game running in the browser with no other tabs, and clearing the cache helps a bit too.  Still it tends to get kinda slow and herky-jerky after playing for a few hours, and restarting the browser is a good fix for that.  That's Flash for ya -- I hope they port the game to Java some day -- I think it would run a lot better.

    Just my 2 currants...

Thanks Fuzzy too.  I was looking at the Acer netbooks too but had heard bad things about it from my friend N. who has one.  :: shrugs ::

  • I also use an Eee PC to play Glitch. It's an HE model, I could check specifics if you want.

Only "disadvantage" is that you have to play on full screen, which I don't mind at all. On the other hand, I've never played it on a different computer, so maybe it doesn't run all that well. As long as I'm in oblivion, though, I'm prefectly happy with it :p

  • I have a brand new Eee with Windows 7 that I just set up a few weeks ago.

With 1 GB Glitch technically ran but the client lag was so bad that you could barely move.

Expanded to 2 GB and it plays nicely if there is not a ton of stuff going on in the screen (like the ridiculous amount of piles of stuff I leave in my house).  Normal street running is fine if you avoid overcrowded places.

  • I'm running it on a two-year-old Asus EEE netbook (using Chrome). Works fine, though you will have to close and reopen a tab/reboot browser now and then. The only downside is having to go fullscreen to see both levels of the inventory.
Posted 13 months ago by Essgee Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It is interesting to me how many people are saying you need to run it in full screen to see both levels of the inventory. It has the same size screen as my laptop and I don't have to use F11, I just have my browser window maximised and I can see all my inventory just fine. =/

Anyways y'all are being super helpful. ^_^
