What's with the vegan propaganda spam everywhere?

Don't get me wrong, if you are a vegan in real life, well, good for you. However, in Glitch, chickens don't get eaten and pigs offer their meat without any injury or distress. Eggs come from trees. What's with all the humorless and obnoxious stuff everywhere? Oddly enough, it isn't even consistent, as no one seems to care about the poor milk-producing butterflies.

Perhaps Glitch is NOT the right place to spread your views, as there is no "cruelty" to speak of and you certainly can choose to play as a vegan or vegetarian in the game without too much of a penalty if you really have a hard time wrapping your head around the idea that these are pixel animals and therefore you are dealing only with pixel meat, grain and milk.

I don't know, it just seems to be out of place. I certainly don't go around naming all the animals to reflect my religious, political and personal views.

Is it me?

  • @Woochi, I'm not a vegan. Nor do I preach my choices to anyone. Nor do I approve of preaching.

All I am saying to several people in this thread is: stop making stupid jokes about vegans and vegetarians, please. Why would you think that's in any way acceptable?

And if someone replies with 'well a vegan made a preachy note so lol they started it' let me stop you right there and ask you to think that reply through.

Casombra gets it. The jokes aren't funny.

To be perfectly clear: complaining about the propaganda is fine. Complaining about rude vegans is fine.

Using an unpleasant encounter as an excuse to make dumb jokes and propagate stereotypes about ALL vegans isn't.

To compare with an often disliked group, mentioned above: Jehova's Witnesses. Yes, they usually annoy me too, because their need to seek converts clashes with my need to be left the hell alone. But if I start making jokes about how silly they are and how superior my beliefs are to theirs, I'm still being rude. That's MY action, not theirs.

  • It's not your beliefs that make you better than a Jehovas Witness, it's the fact that you don't show up on my doorstep early on Saterday mornings. (Wink)

  • @SacredBob: Unless you renamed over seven dozen animals in the Groddles and Ix, going into great detail about how meat is murder and including charming details about cruelty and torture and getting pretty graphic and gross, it was probably not you.

  • I don't think it really matters.  People do what entertains them.  There is no harm in being a Vegan movement, an Occupy movement, or any other movement on glitch.  Glitch is not the world you think you see.. it is a world of imagination.  It is no different than when you were a young child and you had a play house or a fort.  There was hardly anything there, but you could play out anything you could think of.  Some people will be more serious than others.

My point of view... do something on glitch because you enjoy doing it, whatever it is

  • Its highly likely that whoever spent the time to run through the world naming animals to convey stereotypical dogma was neither a vegan nor acting in a sincere fashion.

You have been trolled. You bit on the hook and are now flipping around in the bottom of the boat. So to speak.

Carry on ridiculing vegans if it suits your character to behave that way, and if doing so helps you feel better about yourself.

  • Speaking as someone who has been vegan for 20+ years (all my life), I am not the least offended/bothered by the meat meals or piggy nibbling. I'm tired of the (vegan) trolls who complain on forums about this topic. For those who are vegan and offended:

    1. I'm sick of you giving the rest of us a bad rep
    2. Get over it, this is a game!!!
    3. Don't play if you're so offended.

    The end.

  • Not a vegan, but it is clear that the Giants imagined Ur with a very particular strong moral tone. They clearly intended us to live in a cruelty-free world where we could have a lot of fun and that we would all be united against the devastation of the Rook.

When this Glitch came into the world i was freaked out to find i must chew on piggies to survive, but i came to realize that Humbaba of the Legs and especially Pot of the Awesome Pot had imagined these things in a way that was not cruel to the creatures. But my beloved Cosma gave us the Orb and freed us from our ties even to the shadow of cruelty that lies on other worlds. Tii gave us magickal mixtures which bring the creatures of Ur such delight that they return with gifts of their own selves. So this Glitch tries to walk as lightly as one of my beloved Cosma's butterflies through Ur - when i touch down it is to honor those Giants who have also imagined the goodness of the Awesome Pot and the Famous Pugilist Grill.

    Ur *is* a beautiful world.

  • Seriously, what's all the fuss about? As others have already said, this could just be some people's style of playing Glitch, a way of role-playing so to speak. If it's not, if it really is them preaching vegan-ism in-game, then so what? Don't read the notes, change the chickens/pigs names.
    Easy as that.
    Gasp! Glitch is serious business!

  • Please don't mistake a "what is this, I don't even" comment with fussing, outrage, a serious complaint and/or an insult about other players or their views.

I seek enlightenment--is this a "thing" that people do regularly?--and to be in on the joke, if that is what it was. If it wasn't a joke, my opinion is that it was weird and off-putting (as the moral conundrums posed and fussing about cruelty are not applicable to the way Ur works: no piggies are harmed, no chickens eaten), but I would not stop someone from being weird and off-putting if that's how they wish to play and if the game mechanics allow weird and off-putting behaviors.

I will, however, NOTE that I do find it both weird and off-putting. That's a risk you take in a social game if you do something weird and off-putting: someone may comment about your weird or off-putting actions or chat or behaviors. If it bugs you to be called out for being weird or off-putting, perhaps you need to do fewer weird or off-putting things in a social game. :)

I will also ask if it is normal for people to use animal naming to confront other players with controversial personal opinions that have no relevance to the Ur-niverse, as it was the first time I'd seen that happen. I'm certainly not upset or anything. The point is moot, the animals have long since been renamed and also probably all died by now after living fulfilling pixel animal lives. :)

I'm still waiting for my conga-line of Burma Shave-like piggie adverts!

  • lol this is kind of funny because I'm currently studying antropology in college (though I didn't pay all that much attention to it, but this is what I remember).
Our ancestors were not meat eaters, we've only evolved into that diet. The fact is we are not at the top of the food chain if not for our tools. If you look at the animal kingdom most animals are either stronger or faster than us or both. We actually can't even catch a rabbit if we didn't have traps.

Also when we were purely plants eaters we were not the ones that got eaten, because we avoided the kills thus avoided crossing paths with the true predators. When we evolved into eating meat on the other hand we ran the risk of going toe-to-toe with the predators and would probably get eaten.

Edit: I have friends that are vegan and I think it's absolutely fine. The only problem is when anyone tries to force their belief onto me. It's the same with religion, I don't want to be told what I should believe in. If both sides keep their beliefs to themselves, then we can co-exist just fine.

and yeah I can see this has spiraled out of context but I just wanted to throw it in.

  • I imagine a pig named "Tasty" is horrifying to some people who are vegan for moral reasons. Especially if they just started playing the game and don't realize that piggies don't die from being nibbled and that they can deny the nibbler meat if they so choose. It almost seems like carnivorous propaganda.

My suggestion is to learn to rename animals. If you're unable to rename a particularly unpleasantly named animal right away, wait an hour. If it's too horrible for words, you can report it, but make sure it's something worth reporting and not just vegan propaganda.

Basically, I don't think this trend is going to stop because someone posts in the forum about it. Only a small percentage of people who play glitch even check the forums if it's like any other game in history.

On a more serious note: Has anybody seen my pants? I can't find them anywhere. I thought maybe they were in the laundry, but nope. Anyone?
Posted 12 months ago by Quirk Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yeah I always found that naming them after characters of a series is fun. Then you have the whole cast in one street.
Posted 12 months ago by Vinchon Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The only reason I can imagine someone feeling guilty about a militantly-vegan-named piggie is if they actually feel vaguely guilty about eating meat and don't want to be prodded about it.

It's merely a name! (I hardly even read the names of piggies I'm nibbling, anyway.) Change it if you don't like it!

People are subjected to overt and subliminal propaganda and messaging all the time, everywhere. Mostly, we learn to ignore it. People with minority views sometimes get strident because they feel otherwise they can't be heard over the prevailing cultural norm.

(@Quirk, I'm pretty sure I saw your pants hanging from a tree in Kalavana. I swear I didn't put them there.)

  • by the time i found this thread, it was tl;dr for most of it, however, just saying that as a REAL LIFE vegan, I play this game without the slightest compunction when it come to nibbling, squeezing and milking the animals. All the vegan-hating on this thread is a bit sad, because you're only really reacting to those vegans who are bringing themselves to your attention by doing something a bit obnoxious (imho). There are loads of vegans who you wouldn't know were vegan because they just get on with stuff, both here and IRL, so please if you're going to hate on vegans/vegetarians, be specific and hate on the obnoxious pontificating vegangelicals and not the rest of us.

    cheers,
