Start quests / tutorials

Copied my post from the "help mine" thread, (and leaving bits out):

About helpig mine: The first thing, before discussion about selfish or polite, is awareness .
I started playing 11th of june (a week ago), and only started mining yesterday.
Helping someone mine is completely new to me, I learned of it in this thread, I didn't notice it ingame. Probably because I don't expect such a thing, I played many games where you just mine it all solo and whre other miners are competition, a threath so to say. It didn't quite cross my mind that you could help eachother.

I also heard dicussions about killing trees to get empty patches, which are needed for loam to build streets. People cure trees (=no empty patch) or plant trees(=no empty patch, loam).
I think replanting and curing is done by many (not all) out of ignorence about the need for empty patches, the effect it has on the world is not clear.

Therefor I think it would be a good idea to point this out more in the startquests. The startquests are mostly about how you get around solo (at least, that is what I remember of it). If the emphasize would be more about the effects your actions have on the world or others it would make me think more about my actions and their consequences, and what possible effect it could have. Make people more aware that there are more possible interactions with stuff then the actions you have currently available to you, or that there are often benefits if you do things together.

  • I understand where you are coming from, but I think a lot of people blow through the tutorials just to 'get in game'...I think the tutorial covers a lot of ground before releasing you into the Glitch world, where there is so much to discover on your own...

Maybe some additional quests to balance out the learning curve would be in order...the help mining was just implemented recently, so maybe a new quest to cover that aspect of mining might be useful...though myself, I prefer to mine solo.

I believe at some point there is a quest to poison a tree...though the in-game ethics of said actions are probably hard to convey in a tutorial or a quest...especially since the views on it will vary from player to player...there will always be rude people that want to ruin things for everyone, and there will always be the nice ones that will want to do the right thing and help the world be an enjoyable location, etc.

Also with the implementation of the dirt piles within the last test or two, it's less critical to have empty patches (other than for that lower level hoeing quest)...though I don't know of anyone that has gotten loam from those dirt piles yet.

Also, while the game lends itself to the social aspects and group play, it also lends itself to solo game play...I think it is what you make it or what you want it to be...some will chose to do things together, others are just anti-social, and many others are somewhere in between...not sure how this could be adequately covered in the tutorials or quests...it really might just need to be something you experience through trial and error.
