Where did GNG Musicblocks come from? How did Glitchen get them?

I kinda stick to myself, so I haven't been privy to some current events; but I have had a few players play this special music for me and I've never seen/gotten/heard of these before. From what I read - they're INCREDIBLY rare? How did these blocks that "once put the world to slumber" come to be?

  • You get GNG Musicblocks from Beta Pickles, which were gifted for those who participated in the first beta.

  • Here is where the song came from:  http://www.glitch.com/forum/general/3715/

When the world and all players were reset in preparation for Launch, everyone was given a Beta Pickle, which would produce a GNG musicblock when all possible pickle results had been induced.

  • @Millie I tried to type something like that 10 times, but I couldn't figure out how to say it. Awesome job.

  • It took me a couple of minutes to get it straight in my head :P Thanks.

  • Beta players, and I mean the original Beta, not this Beta, before Glitch first Launched (then later Unlaunched) received a Special Item That Only Beta Testers Get (aka Senor Funpickle) when they first logged in after the last reset before Launching (The Great Reset) on September 15th, 2011.

Playing with this item resulted in some strange, to say the least, effects, ranging from throwing 5 random cheap items from your inventory across the street you're on to teleporting you to a random street in Ur. Playing with this also resulted in a debuff, Too Much Fun, which does not allow you to play with your pickle for another 5 minutes.

If you managed to get all the actions that the pickle could do, you received a GNG. This was not per player with pickle, so you could not trade your pickle to a friend for another GNG, but (as far as staff want) per pickle. However there have been bugs, and accounts of how people have managed to 'reset' their pickle and gotten multiple GNGs from them.

Both items are quite rare, and still exist to date. You may be able to see a pickle bouncing around in Ur, even today. If you are lucky and rich enough, you may be able to buy one for yourself!

  • Well, Lelu, one of the original beta players, wrote and recorded the song during the first beta, since they would regularly shut down the game for days to weeks at a time.  When TS heard the song, they started playing it as the final warning that the game was shutting down.  At the end of the first beta, all the alpha and beta players were reset (ie, everything was taken away from our inventories, and we were all reset to zero for all stats) prior to the game launching to the public.  For their hard work and dealing with the "pain" of a major reset, these players were all awarded Senor Funpickle dolls, as "gifts that only beta testers get".  If you play with the pickle long enough (ie, get each of the crazy joke actions the pickle will levy on you), then you got your own GNG music block.  It holds a lot of sentimental value to many players who will never sell their GNG blocks, while it hasn't had that same type of value for others that have sold theirs (so you may see some in the auctions occasionally).  It's somewhat rare, but not overly so. Rumor is that you can play with someone's funpickle and eventually get a GNG music block because it resets for providing one when the funpickle changes hands of the players.

ETA: I see others were faster than me in posting...//and to fix the player that came up with the song...(and I learned something...could have sworn it was Theremina Lute...but she did a bunch of other cool glitch songs)

  • @b3achy, It was Lelu (who has been around since alpha days) who wrote and recorded Goodnight, Groddle, not Theremina Lute.

Theremina Lute has written several songs about Glitch, though.

  • Lol...yes, Millie, was fixing my post as you posted...since I clicked your link...they definitely have different yet glitchy sounds to their voices...so that explains why I've been so confused for so long...lol...I had been thinking it was the wrong singer...

  • Ah, additional Glitch song lore - it was TL's Let me come back to Groddle that was the opening song for the game after we came off the original beta reset.

  • Ah, that makes more sense. I had a feeling you were right about something.

  • There's another thread (which I may go looking for shortly) that says Beta I ended around September 21(?). This sounds approximately correct, although that was before the Senior Year of Dire Confusion so I can't remember dates for crap.

  • @Crazy Zombie, check out your credit history.
Posted 6 months ago by Spineless Subscriber! | Permalink
  • All first round betas were also provided at least one badge and in some cases multiples depending on the level you were at before the reset.  Look for the beta 'Ascended' badge in your list.  I got my on 20 September 2011.

You can find out when you joined the game by looking at your account history and seeing the date of the first entry, which is usually the credits gift from TS.

  • How did people get a second music box?
Posted 6 months ago by xoxJulie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • They got lucky.
Posted 6 months ago by Spineless Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I wouldn't call it luck, exactly, at least not for most people who got more than one GNG from a single pickle over the past few months. In February, someone discovered a bug that allowed one to easily "reset" any pickle -- or even the same pickle over and over -- so it would "forget" it had dropped a GNG. This person told a few chosen friends, and up until just a few weeks ago these folks have been quietly exploiting the bug, amassing GNGs and carefully (and sometimes not-so-carefully) selling them to unsuspecting players, often by way of alts. While the bug itself was finally reported and disabled a few weeks ago, the GNGs remain and continue to find their way to the market. The only luck involved was being "lucky" enough to 1) be considered a trusted friend of the person who discovered the bug and 2) share a similarly non-traditional ethical outlook with regard to the ToS and what constitutes unfair game advantage.

  • @Sirentist - I can't believe it..and I seriously had to bust a gut and sell my furniture to buy my last one for 650k and there is a distinct possibility that it was gained unfairly?

This is where the currant (as in current and currant) situation gets me.  We're supposed to be about giving (or so that's drummed into us) but more and more seem to be holding out for such extreme amounts of play currants for things.  Which would be fine if we were all so currant orientated and on a level playing field, but when you get a glitch (or rather a bug that wasn't reported and taken advantage of by some players) charging high prices for an item they never should have had to begin with it really leaves a nasty taste in my mouth.

Plus for them to have gotten away with ripping off other players with something they never should have had has put them even higher in the currant stakes and in more of a position to screw over other genuine and honest players with their pricing.

I've taken to buying at 'dumb' expensive prices and selling on to genuine players for an intentional ridiculous loss of 300-400k (and in some cases even free) just because to me the currants really don't matter and the thing that gives me the most joy is seeing someone else happy!

Is there any way in which TS behind the scenes can investigate the glitch and those who took advantage of it without reporting it so that their funds (currants) can be amended to what they were before?

Posted 6 months ago by Jessenya Subscriber! | Permalink
  • To be fair, though, I wouldn't be surprised if the 650k price was already "low" because of the excess on the market.  If not for that I wouldn't be surprised if GNGs were 2M or more.

  • We're supposed to be about giving (or so that's drummed into us)

I must have missed that memo because I sure don't play the game just to give things away.   Glitch has a currancy  and an economy, and the rules of markets work in the game, more or less.  Items that are in demand, sell, and for a higher price relative to their cost of production than items that are not in demand.  Demand encourages more players to produce more supply, which moderates prices.  There are some artificial constraints on all this activity, but it does work, and buying and selling is an important part of the game for a lot of players.

  • @ WalruZ
It's all about playing styles mate. I don't usually sell stuff, I just give them away to those who need them, which is probably why I have never broken 500k ยข. On the flipside (not Flipside) I also got my GNG and Senor Funpickle (and the Sloth Knockers Limited Edition Senor Dullpickle) as gifts.

  • To those who have exploited the bug, let's get in touch. I'd like to talk about some things.

  • wow, I don't know such epic lore behind gng! :o Now I will appreciate it more!
Posted 6 months ago by rosedragon Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @WalruZ, possibly the wrong choice of words, I did type that after reading the post which set me off somewhat! I too do play in a way to try and make currants with auctions and selling tinctures I've made off of my own back etc  I don't try to make currants however by abusing the game mechanics in order to gain a higher financial advantage : )

With regards to giving away, I do that too - Glitch is incredibly cutesyfied (amazingly cute actually) not normally a game I ever would have looked at.  It's just too girly in many ways but that's now part of the appeal for me.  Went off on a tangent there...but that being said I probably give away as much as I make percentage wise.  Mostly because not everyone has the time to put into the game that I am able too.

Given a choice I'd rather be out making 'real' money but am currently stuck in a different position.  So if I can help out those to get the same fun and cool stuff that the 'all dayers' find much easier to get, then I always will.  It's fun to help, rewarding to see someone else happy and the knock on effect is that the other player is likely to respond by 'giving' in some way to another glitch : ) Kind of like a 'pay it forward' scenario purely brought on by one glitch being kind/nice to another : )

Edit: Sort of like when you're driving along on a busy road and you stop to let someone out after everyone has sped past them.  You wave to one another in thanks/you're welcome and then the driver you let out onto the road will more than likely let another driver out into the road a little further up.  Good deeds instill a sense of well being and compassion for both parties and others which can only be a good thing : )
