What crime did the gas trees commit?

I went to Ix expecting to be able to harvest at least a few gas trees only to find they have all been slaughtered and banished from the area completely.

Can someone please tell me what crime they committed as, of course, such wholesale destruction must mean they have done something wrong though I can't for the life of me think what it might have been.

They are as pleasing to the eye as the spice trees, they are useful in their own way, they are as friendly and as generous as the spice tree so what on earth did they do to make people hate them so much?

Surely people are not making them pay for the actions of those who previously used the innocent gas tree to wage war against spice trees?  Surely no Glitch would make the innocent pay for the actions of the guilty so what did the gas trees do to deserve being banished from Ix???

PS: where can I find them now?

  • Yes, essentially what happened was that gas took over not only Ix, but also both large-scale spiceable zones in the bogs (jethimadh and kalavana)

The actual statistics of how many of each there are are actually still fairly even (7 more spice than gas, changes every hour), they are simply not in the same place.

There were under 30 spice trees in the entire public world for over 24 hours, and I suppose that spice lovers decided to consolidate their efforts into the tight-knit space of Ix. Hopefully soon it reverts back to a Some-Of-Each situation in Ix, with one plentiful bogs zone going to spice and another to gas. I am sure the deeper bog residents miss their spice!

  • This Gas VS Spice war has gone too far. I think it is time TS stepped in on this as it is becoming a BIG problem that neither side is willing to come to a compromise.  It is impacting on ordinary players who just want to get on with having fun in the game. Im sure like myself most people don't give a flying fuck where the gas trees or the spice trees are planted just so long as there is enough of both in Ur so that we can all happily do our own thing.

An for anyone whose doesn't mind reading waffling long posts - this is what happened yesterday and is what made up my mind that TS needs to step in on this war. I think the behaviour of those invested in this war is going to start driving players away.

I got a quest yesterday where I needed gas. I headed to IX and it was ALL spice. I was a little annoyed as i'd walked half across Ur but as I could go elsewhere to find gas I figured no harm done really and i'd just let it go. So I asked in chat where I could find gas only to be met with smart arse answers such as 'on a gas tree' and I tried to explain I thought the war was about west/east spice, I walked across Ur so and that I just wanted some gas for a quest. I got shouted down with the Dune inspired comment 'the spice must flow'. Someone was kind enough to private message me and tell me a website that listed where things were but that didn't help at all as the website updates were incorrect. Some did say try Shimla because they has passed through and it has some so I did  - Shimla didn't have ANY gas or spice at all, the person deliberately lied to me, I don't know if that was meant to funny but I didn't think it was. Seems I wasn't alone in presuming we could find gas in baby steppes as I kept seeing people asking in chat about gas in IX and who were oblivious to the war even exisiting. I spent at least 2-3 hours walking about Ur and ONLY Jethimadh had gas plants, I didn't find a single gas plant in Kalavana or Chakra Phool - plenty of eggs and spice though and I visited a fair few streets in both. I was so disheartened by the whole thing that despite eventually having enough gas to complete the quest I didn't even bother trying. I went and watched tv instead.

At this point I don't know if it's funny or sad (or both) how people manage to find things to "war" about in a non-violent game. *sigh*

  • It is impacting on ordinary players who just want to get on with having fun in the game.

I've already dropped my post-session rating to 2. I raised it back to 3 after the community guidelines were issued, but come on - here's the weekly rag on 'Yar! Spice must flow!' and 'Gah! Gas not Spice!'

It's going back to a 2. This isn't emergent play or improv, it's people being negative and contrary for the sake of being negative and contrary. In improv, when something is offered - say, spice plants, you don't chop down the tree, poison the tree, or blow up the tree. The tree becomes something you can use as a backdrop or resource: it's there for shade, to climb, to harvest. It's part of an imagined environment that everyone in the scene can use and enjoy, and no one is taking something away from someone else, or closing down someone else's options.

  • I left Jethimadh and Kalavana about an hour and a half ago and I found plenty of gas with a spice tree now and then in those zones and  Chakra Phool a few spice trees. I got 5 stacks worth of gas without any problem at all going from street to street. I also have 2 spice trees, a gas tree, and a wood tree in my yard as well on top of traveling between Ix for spice and Jethimadh and Kavavana for gas using the subway system.

  • I want to ask just one question.

Why would anybody go to spice island, IX, to get gas, when most of it is in the firebogs?

Get on the subway, get off in the swamp, bet you'll find gas trees right there.

  • I live in Chakra Pool, and the gas trees I normally go to are now spice, the gas trees in the streets near the stations in the other swamps are now spice
Posted 14 months ago by Darkley Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I live in Kalavana.  The other day the trees on my street were spice in the morning, gas by early afternoon, and spice again by dinner, with one lone gas tree just trying to get to the 12 hour mark.

It would be interesting if this kind of excessive tree rotation ended up having a long term consequence that would require concerted and organized effort to reverse....like some weird crazy hybrid spicy gas tree that was unharvestable and nigh unkillable. And that said mean things to you when you interacted with it, like some vengeful karma baby.

Or conversely, and on a more positive note...a cool funky spicy gas tree that dispensed some kind of fun hybrid item of high value and extremely short lifespan.

  • One telling thing is that vapour is auctioning for 8c a unit, 5c more than it's 'list' price according to the wiki.    I suspect this is what's behind the gas tree killers.  If you kill the public gas trees then backyard gas tree owners can get a better price and still find other commodities easily available in public.
Posted 14 months ago by WalruZ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Beans are auctioning for x4-x5 list price, and it sells... 5c is nothing really.

Gas just doesn't get used much by most people until later stages of game, while spice is useful both early and late for food.

Ratios vary hour by hour, but nor gas nor spice are anywhere close to extinction.

Ix is spice country, and it will stay that way.

For some gas trees, you can go to Uralia; For most gas trees, go to Kalavana and Jethimadh.

Nope. Ix is spice and gas country, with gas having a well-established presence on the Baby Steppes side. Spice absolutism is sad.

  • I am a spice preferrer since it is so prevalent in cooking (and even bean seasoning and egg seasoning requires it) but I see no reason why the "yellow" Ix streets (Western side of the isle) can't have a mixture of spice and gas. There's only 3 streets with patches (Baby Steppes, Groddle Ladder, Guillermo Gamera Way) as Ruta Ascension has no patches. If each of the yellow streets had 1 or 2 gas plants, there would still be innumerable spice plants to yield a bounteous harvest.

I remember in beta, trying to accomplish various gassy things (egg seasoning, bean seasoning, etc) and it proving to be an insurmountable task to acquire the necessary vapour or long extended journeys (as I only had tele 1, since there was only 1 teleport available).

Although I'm not doing as much with gas at the present, there are those who love making chicks or making beans for the market. Some of the gasses require massive quantities of vapour for just 1 item of gas. Being able to harvest it on the slight while I'm doing a normal harvest will make it so when I DO need to use it, I'll probably have a full stack from harvesting 1-2 per street when I didn't really need it.

    EDIT:
As Darkley says and I did not realize, evidently fuelmaking also requires gas. We are at the stage where people ARE at these more advanced stages of the game and having the resources available in a place where they are allowed to grow would be highly desirable.

  • Do you think that it's fair to let the people who want gas in Ix less than 25% of half of the island? Do you think that's in the spirit of the kind-hearted game? A game of sharing and caring and giving rather than taking? "Go somewhere else for your gas, we don't have room here" certainly doesn't sound right to me.

Like I said, I mainly spice. But Baby Steppes has 6 patches. 1 gas tree is 16.67% of the patches. Your fellow glitchen has asked for 1 gas tree. Why not share?

PS - I've stayed out of gas and spice trees forever until now. I saw someone trying to be so reasonable and a "spicer" refused to reason for one tree. I thought, come on, 1 tree? ONE tree? What happened to our hearts that we cannot give 1 tree out of all the spice?

  • Have trouble finding gas plants you can get to?

    Give up.

Those of us who have difficulty jumping cannot use the non-Ix regions.  I'm willing to trade a bag of allspice for a bag of gas with any of you who keep telling me there's plenty, if I just travel to a region I cannot navigate.

  • Having trouble finding gas plants? You can't be serious

This isn't about 'finding' them: that kind of attitude treats Ur's landscape as a pure resource-extraction economy. If you really want to go about it in those terms, then why not just play a text-based trading game like Mafia Wars?

One of the things that makes Glitch fun is the attention that has been put into the character of the environments, and people are protective about Ix because it's a quirky, funky little world-in-itself that's been around since alpha. Like Neatly Sliced, I have no objection to Ix being predominantly spice -- and as I've said before, I spent a lot of time and currants in beta replanting E/W Spice -- but to tolerate nothing but spice on the Baby Steppes side, when the region explicitly supports both spice and gas, seems like unfortunate absolutism. Gas plants look pretty in Ix's yellow streets; is it really objectionable to have just one or two?

...and on reflection, because of the number of people who seem to be playing in very resource-centric ways, it makes me wish that TS hadn't removed spice entirely from Groddle Forest.

  • One way for the Dev's to moderate this war would be to set a minimum number of trees of each type in an area. This way the Dev can setup a certain streets where the last Gas tree will never die, or spice tree, thus providing a lower bound on each type. Alternatively, set a minimum for the entire region. At that point, the gas/spice war can rage on without compromising the game for others. And please create one wood tree somewhere that never dies too so we can point new players at it. 8)

  • I don't think it's a good idea to try to remove all challenges or conflict from the game. Being challenged is good.
Posted 14 months ago by WalruZ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Ohhh, wouldn't it be nice if Mab or Grendaline or Spriggan would forbid the planting of more than 50% of any single tree species in a region.  So if you tried to make Ix all spice or all gas or all bubbles, Mab would speak to you, sternly, about unbalanced ecology.  Groddle Heights could still be primarily bubbles, but the beans and fruit trees would have a chance too.

It wouldn't have to be tied to a particular patch, and it wouldn't have to force a certain percentage of each of the possible kinds of trees.  It would just stop at 50% for any single-species planting.

If Mab wanted to enforce diversity, there could also be a requirement that each of the allowed species had to be at least 5% of the trees in a region.
Posted 14 months ago by WindBorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • And then they'd just dig holes so no other tree type could be planted.

  • "This isn't about 'finding' them: that kind of attitude treats Ur's landscape as a pure resource-extraction economy."

Whatever word you want to use, find, get, have, need, want. Don't let the word get in the way.

If the gas plants aren't for resources then what's the argument about?
Posted 14 months ago by Eye Wonder Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Or you could implement microclimates within broader climate regions that only support single species, an idea I would personally advocate.

    The alternatives are:
    a) Nerfing tree poison, which would be a shame, since tree-killing is the only reliable way to get planks, unless you own a home with -- let's call them "lightpatches" -- to support wood trees.  I'm in the firebog; my home only has one dark patch -- so my plank strategy must either be kill a tree and harvest it out in the world, or kill my basement tree, and forego the eggs. I'm not a spice/gas warrior, and I do conscientiously replant what I killed, but that's just my style.
    b) What Windborn said, which sounds like a dev nightmare to me, but TS has many great devs, so perhaps not.
Posted 14 months ago by CrashTestPilot Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Don't let the word get in the way.

I'm not sure you've grasped the distinction I'm making: your argument is still "want gas? go to X". I'm asking why Ix, specifically, shouldn't be allowed to retain one or two gas plants on a few streets, as it's not as if their presence really chafes spice-harvesters' bounties that much.

If the gas plants aren't for resources then what's the argument about?

It's about the motivation in declaring Ix a gas-free zone when a) the region supports gas; b) monocultures are dull. I don't object to people playing with a greater emphasis on resource concentration and maximisation, but I find it a bit odd in the context of the game environment. Like I said, text-based resource management games are available.

  • Excuse me Holgate but don't try to troll me by advising me about other games I can play.

The trees are the way the are because of the people. Large groups of people cannot come to an agreement and if they do there will always be the ones who want to rebel. It's simple actually.

  • Excuse me Holgate but don't try to troll me by advising me about other games I can play.

Excuse me: I'm pointing out that Glitch is played in a graphical environment in which regions have distinct characteristics, and your hog-the-toys "go to X for gas" argument pretends that isn't so.
Posted 14 months ago by Holgate Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I would really like plants matching their environments, but if the Devs really wanted regions to have distinct characteristics, then they wouldn't have allowed people to replant trees as we can do now. In any case, the majority of people who are replanting are not reading any of this, so posting on a forum has marginal use in this case.

I never said there shouldn't be one or two gas. I simply pointed out that there were tons of gas plants all over if you look for them beyond lx. That statement isn't an argument, it's a fact.
Going to lx and sobbing over no gas is not the thing to do. Get on with it. Just like I do when I go to East & West Spice and see that it's been taken over by gas. I move on and get my spice elsewhere instead of sobbing over it.

    In my garden also have the same 5 trees...2 fruit..a spice..a bubble..and a gas.
A Dear Friend of ours has the same 5 trees..2 fruit..a spice..a bubble and a gas..

Totals between us of 6 fruit..3 spice..3 bubble and 3 gas....and we three can each harvest  these trees twice a day, huh? In light of all the above heart-felt thoughts, concerns, actions, counter-actions, etc,etc (no disrespect intended here please) we felt that a guaranteed daily harvest of 12 fruit, 6 spice,6 bubble and 6 gas trees, although slow..it is a steady constant..kind-a like the tortoise and the bunny rabbit dude,..and my personal fav:"It beats a blank".....

  • I know that not everybody likes conflict in their game re: trees, but I definitely hope the staff DOES'T step in and create forced limits or eco-balancing. I think a little antagonism is interesting--the rook have always seemed sort of distant and arbitrary as challenges.

Not specifically referring to any one person or group, something I see really often is: "I never said I was telling other people how to play! All I said was that people should respect how I want to play, which is to have everything arranged the way I want it, so everyone is happy. Not that my way is better than anyone else's, it's just the way we all agree it should be except for the people who are disrupting the best way." Insert behavior surrounding virtually any interactive resource where demand meets supply.

I think that argument (which I've exaggerated a bit to show its edges, but you KNOW you've seen it) gets at why the Spice Gas war is so enduring, but (I think) also speaks to the strengths of the game. I think resource pinch is healthy as long as numbers are generally sufficient worldwide. WindBorn's comment about jumping is the only argument that's given me pause on this.

Plus, with a game as sandboxy as Glitch, I think it's cool that a group of people can create changes/obstacles enduringly.

    Edit: fixed grammatical error.
