Cooking with butter and cheese, "make more"

In general, I very much like the cooking setup, in that if you are missing an ingredient you know how to make, you can click to make that item and be returned to your original recipe.  Even nested a few levels deep, this works great.

However, it is a little frustrating that making butter and cheese are not built into this system.  If I have milk in inventory and need butter for a recipe, I have to dig around in my bags and make it before finishing the recipe, instead of one easy "Make more" click.

I can understand if you don't want to give away how to make butter and cheese (not that it's rocket science in the first place), but once I've done it once by hand, it should definitely show up in the recipe system.

  • I agree that would be nice!

  • Me too. Also, it'd be handy to "make more" metal ingots for molybdenum, tin, copper ingots.

  • I have to agree w/you as well, the frustrating part for me is I find the milk in my bag and then when I turn it into butter if I don't have a spare slot in the same bag I have to hunt for it to turn it into cheese; it would be much easier if I could do it all from the same menu like spice milling or frying, etc.

  • I myself am not sure a out this. I mean, it could get complicated, because it doesn't actually use a tool, so it can't just redirect to the normal tool interface.

  • Good point, Cupcake, but I think that it's worth working around the limitations of the interface rather than accepting them.

Personally, I think it'd be great to be able to do it this way — right now milk/butter/cheese is an irritating anomaly.

  • I like the idea too. But maybe it's meant to teach us to be systematic in organizing our bags ;-)

  • I agree Larky. I like consistency.
Posted 19 months ago by gia Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Well, even if you are fairly systematic, butter and cheese take more space than milk.  (I want to say it's 50/20/10 for milk/butter/cheese, but I forget the exact numbers.)  So, if you shake a bunch of milk, and there isn't enough space in your current bag for the resulting butter, things just move into the first available spots, and it doesn't necessarily all go into the same bag.  You have to go to each spot and one by one convert milk to butter and butter to cheese.

It's not the end of the world, but it would be much nicer if these were integrated like all other cooking ingredients.

  • +1 here too, and heres a suggestion- how about a churn? as well as butter and cheese, we could have yogurt and ice cream as well.
What? Don't look at me like that, it's not like we have anything better to spend our currants on.

  • I make a practice of going milking.  The i make at least half into butter and a little more than half of that into cheese.  Last time I did this I had about 23 bottles of milk.  I was able to get a badge for frying a few recipes without having to stop to make butter and cheese.  This seems to work well for me.  I am now loaded with all kinds of sammiches, salads, and other goodies.  I try to do some cooking each time I play.  Love it!

  • I've been thinking this same thing for a while--it's easier on my bag space to keep things as milk and convert as needed, as Larky notes, and it's kind of a pain to have to close up everything and go shake/compress.

I love the cooking system as it stands currently, but adding this suggestion to the cooking window will be extremely helpful. Moreover, knowing how much milk I have to shake in order to cook makes it more seamless. In my absent-mindedness, I have often shaken bunches of milk and produced cheese, and then forget what I was making or how much it required. Not to mention that I'll shake a bunch only to realize that I had some in my inventory after all. I suppose I should be more OCD about organization. :x

On a separate note, I suppose this would be more homely in Ideas?

  • I agree, a home in Ideas would be better, but I posted this before noticing that there were several sections in the forums.

  • agree- making cheese would be great to have in the "you don't have any" choices, like fruit, spices, etc.

Slightly relevant issue. I could not make some elements in the recent test even though I knew how to make the compounds. Had to use the test tube separately.

  • @gia I got the same bug. Reported it.

  • I like KitkatCat's suggestion. A churn. It would fit nicely into the mixing/cooking. There is already a milk collector.

I'd really, really like all recipe ingredients be able to be made from within the recipe.  Butter and cheese are used in a lot of dishes, and they are the only ingredients that you have to exit the whole process to make.
Posted 18 months ago by WindBorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Small point, but it's not necessary to exit the cooking process to make them - keep the window open, make your cheese, then carry on in the same window. The reason there's a redirect to other cooking tools is because you have to close your current cooking window...

  • I think that's buggy,  for example, I can crush ore while I'm using my frying pan

  • +1, I'd even be willing to buy yet another tool (churn) to turn my milk into butter and the butter into cheese, if it is a tool limitation. But yes, for the cooks, it is rather irritating after you know how to make the stuff to no be able to do it from the fantastic new process menus.  You've spoiled us and now we want more more more! :)

  • Can I add another +1?  I still get my hopes up every time a new test starts.
Posted 18 months ago by larky lion Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Why add the complexity of a churn? Unless there are more recipes than butter of the various degrees of stink cheese, just allow the recipe menu to allow you to make butter or cheese from that interface. Of course having a churn might allow new forms of butter or cheese than we have now. Butterfly blue cheese. Buttermilk. Glitchian (from "American"), Groddle Heights (closest I can can come to "Swiss"). Could be a skill tree in this. Despite the options that can be opened up with such an item, I'd still like to be able to make butter and cheese from the cooking and not having to hunt down the butterfly milk or butter in my inventory and process in there.

  • agreed!
Posted 18 months ago by acreditando Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Ok. It might be a waste of time and effort but I'm currently creating an animated "churn" of a style I think follows Glitch's pattern. :) If I knew where to submit...

  • Love the new cheeses and stuff. Groddle cheese sounds good. Maybe several recipes that require some fruit as well as milk itself. Cream cheese with mixed berries. Cloudberry cheese. And maybe incoporate the herbs as well! Hairball cheese!

  • Ooh! Neat ideas. There is an "Ideas" forum by the way. :)
Posted 18 months ago by Fokian Fool Subscriber! | Permalink
  • well if we are having new cheeses then hopefully it follows that we're also adding goats, which can be harvested for milk (to make cheese) and hair (to make cloth).

@Phochai - KKC was quoting me on new cheese ideas. I like being credited where it's due. :p

  • LOL. Ok. Let me render what I have so far to a bitmap file and I'll upload and provide the link. I'll even throw in a cute bonus I did years back for a friend. *Warning* contains very cute and fuzzy toy animals *Warning*

Note: The warning message is to the bonus link.

  • @The Cat Face - Here is the link to the initial draft. Churn I forgot to get the render time, but I think it was about an hour or two to generate this. Of course a useful version will lack the pretty background I put in there. :) This is just a base and there are lots of details, including the animation I have yet to put in. I could have used real wood and metal textures, but I think this color scheme is more in keeping with Glitch's style. I'm open for suggestions as to details and animations.

Edit: Yes, I know there is an artifact on the bottom black band. Already cleaned it up.

  • Just an update to this thread that I've created a separate thread on those graphics for the butter/cheese churn. I think people have lost interest in this topic already myself, but just in case here is the link to the new thread: Link
