Stoot on Reset

"It will open again (late next week) and you will not be reset (we're 98% sure there will only be one more reset, and it won't happen for at least 6 weeks)." stoot said on Sat. 7/16/2011.

So it seems Glitch will be reset sometime in late August or early Sept.

Your thoughts and feeling regarding the reset? Are you looking forward to it, as I am, or not so much?

  • I'll be sad to lose all my progress (how little it may be, I've only been here for about a month), but I know why it has to come and I think I'll get over it quickly. I would rather have this happen then have to return every item/every currant gotten from a bug after every time it happens to keep things fair :P I guess I'm sort of looking forward to it because that means the game will go totally live soon!

  • Has to happen sooner or later. If you're sore about losing your progress, perhaps Tiny Speck will reward players for their accrued levels with a starting bonus of some kind? 1,000 currants per level?

  • Meherman, I am 100% looking forward to it!  I think of it as a mulligan.  For instance, in my first several tests, I put off learning the cooking skills. Probably because, in rl, I could have written the "I Hate to Cook Book" LOL (yes, that's a rl book title).  But, as time went by, I realized that this was a disadvantage.  So, I can take a different approach.. to this and to a few other things as well.

Also, just to stress it - " and it won't happen for at least 6 weeks."

  • I'm looking forward to it!  And to having all those quests to do again, and trying different learning strategies.  The world is so much richer now than it was when I first started, it'll be interesting to start again with a blank slate.

  • I'm looking forward to it! Yes, we lose all of our currants and progress but that will be IT for resets and we will be up and running henceforth! It is kind of exciting to think that we will soon be the grandparents of the game, right?

  • I'll be learning mining and alchemy early on, so I can make the most of donations and speed up the rest of my learning. First time round, I never spent my favour points. Oh, and I'd buy a house much earlier. A house is so much better than a few extra bags.

  • DBP - be sure to check and see which skills need spent emblems: it would suck to speed up all your learning only to be speedbumped by a need to get a giant on your side!

  • Yeah - now i've progressed a bit further on of course it will be sad to lose what I have, but...I've always thought it would be fun to start again.

I'm looking forward to it :) Get a fresh perspective on things :)

  • I'm looking forward to reset mainly for the aspect of creating a new character - with a new/different personality, skillset, storyline and ambition. I'd love it if eventually I could play more than one character, to roleplay different aspects of the Glitch world... the meditating, garden-loving, tree-healing hippie; the mischief-making Rook-devotee; the alchemist/healer/high priest of a Giant... etc etc... I can see so many player stories developing in this universe. <3 Ur!

  • Looking forward to reset.  I personally wouldn't mind more than one reset before going live so that I could try different strategies of play to optimize various elements.  Right now, I still feel stuck if I pick a certain skill chain and later decide I should have chosen something else either due to quicker learning or certain skills I want to have.

This was a nice long period to see how things played out over the long haul...but I'd like to try a couple different things still.  But it will be very interesting to see how everyone reacts to starting at zero...and how the different changes to our abilities as of late affect game play after reset.

I guess with all the abilities changes to gardening and such (and more anticipated), I'd rather have a reset prior to the "going live" reset, so we can try out some strategy options since these various changes do affect our game play so much...and then maybe a week or two later, have the "going live" reset, so we can implement what we just learned (or get a redo/mulligan if what we thought was a good strategy wasn't so successful, especially since we seem to be stuck for a long time with whatever we choose since the unlearning options still are not available).

  • "Reset" means "launch," so I'm not looking forward to it.  The game still has bugs and UI problems, and not enough content to keep players busy for more than a couple of months.  It pains me to think that the game would fail to attract enough players because it was pushed to market too early.

  • I'm looking forward to it. I'll be mining. I'll make tons of cash and move to a fire bog house and run around and do street projects and go to parties and fight rooks. I'm ready. I want to get to know my neighbors better. And maybe they'll have an urban space? Maybe you'll have to scrabble through endless ancestral byways and you'll get to a strange sci-fi city?
Posted 17 months ago by sakmet Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm thinking about glum pudding's remark. But can't they keep adding regions after the game goes to market? I don't know much about video games. I will get bored if they don't add places. Or, Glum pudding, What are the main ui problems, in your opinion? Do you think there will be lots more back story about the giants and rooks etc. by September?
Posted 17 months ago by sakmet Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm not too sure I agree with there not being enough content, or that it's too buggy. I remember WoW when it first started out, so buggy that a body couldn't get on the server for hours at a time. Clothes at higher levels were recycled clothes from lower levels, just a different color. And endgame was capped. Capped as in they made the big bosses impossible to kill, and people tried for months with different strategies not even knowing they were impossible to kill (a small secret the devs kept from everyone until years later).

I remember Ragnarok Online, with wipes every few days, or whenever the devs felt like it. "Rollbacks" as they called them. And that little game called Neopets, when there was only one land at first, and Macy Gray was a pet you could own. They also launched with very little content.

I think this game is largely a social game, in spite of having some MMO and some topdown game qualities. I think that is where it's strength lies, and that certainly is enough to bring it to launch. This game feels highly social to me already, much more than most.

  • I wasn't looking forward to reset at first, but now I really am.
I'm really looking forward to starting over.
It's been great working my way up in the game, but I've reached a point where I'm starting to not want to bother doing too much more, just because it seems kind of a waste doing personal goals so close to reset time. Don't get me wrong, I still love playing the game, but I've just lost the sense of urgency I had when I first started.
I'm hoping once the 'final' reset's happened, I'll have the motivation to just keep on going, safe in the knowledge that all progress will remain as progress  :)

Am I the only one who is worried by this?
Posted 17 months ago by Tanukihat Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Tanukihat, the devs have stated that the game currently has content good for about 20 levels, although others have exceeded that point without hitting the boredom wall.  After reaching a certain saturation point with quests and achievements, the game is (as striatic put it elsewhere) a cycle of boredom and shenanigans.  I know I have swung between both several times well before level 20.

  • I'm looking forward to it. I like how my character has progressed, but since this last test was my first experience with Glitch, I may have made some poor skill learning and Giant donation mistakes. After the reset, I'll know exactly what I should do differently from the beginning, I'm really excited!!

  • Well there will be no more resets when it launches, and when it resets again and again, we will be getting closer and closer to the launch
Posted 17 months ago by MikiD Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @MikiD, the plan is not for the game to be reset again and again pre-launch.  From the quote in the OP: "we're 98% sure there will only be one more reset."
Posted 17 months ago by jasbo Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I see reset as bitter sweet.  As a "nester" I will miss my home, gardens, and animals.  However, as I have reached the higher levels I have become somewhat bored with the game and I am looking forward to starting over.
Posted 17 months ago by Sugar Plum Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @sakmet...since one of the key elements of the game at the higher levels right now is street projects (ie, opening new streets), there will likely continue to be those in game.  It also seems to be part of the premise of the game is to 'expand' the world...so it is likely the new streets and regions will continue to grow after it goes live. I think they've been trying to get the world at such a stage that it can handle an influx of new players at launch, but I don't think that means that we stop expanding the world.  However, it is possible that the street projects will change after launch...maybe more phases, or different elements to do to launch a street, so that more can participate...or maybe just more scattered all around the world so that there is more expansion that happens simultaneously.

@jasbo...good point...so 2% chance we might get more than one reset before launch.  @glum - we've had resets in the past, so reset doesn't necessarily mean launch yet, but we do know at launch there will be a reset...and launch is indeed looming...

While I'm looking forward to reset, honestly, I'm not totally looking forward to the influx of folks at launch.  Like you glum, not sure there is enough there yet (and IMO, there is only enough content there to keep interest for a week or two at 24/7 - you can easily make over level 20 in that time just playing on the weekends).

  • The reset is really an upset.  I am totally enjoying the game right now, I try and play as much as possible for the sheer fun of it.  What we have now will never ever be the same once the reset occurs and we go live.  I love all the little details and nuances of Glitch.  The ambiance between the players is beyond awesome.  The interaction of the developers and players is something I have never experienced before.  I must remember to take a few pictures of us in our beta game as we re right now.  When the reset happens I hope and expect to be happy with the New Glitch, it will never be the same game that we are playing now, who knows it may even be more magnificent only time will tell.  Until then play on.  :)

  • I'm looking forward to the reset.  I'll miss my progress and house - and my named piggies! - but I'm happy for the chance to do some things differently next time around.  For example, I'll get Better Learning asap, I most likely won't get Engineering or Fuel-Making next time, and I'll most likely skip the Alchemy skills completely.  (I got some of them this time for Botany, but since you can buy seasoned beans at the vendor, Botany has been something of a let-down.  I probably will skip that, too.)

I've got all the cooking/drink-making skills and all but one each of the animal and plant skills now, and I'll almost certainly go that route again.  I have avoided mining and refining altogether, and while I'm going to grab and try those in the next few weeks of Beta, (no other skills left to get, really) from what I've seen of my boyfriend mining and refining at his computer on the other side of the room, it seems deadly boring to me.  So unless I find some hidden digging obsession I wasn't aware I harbored, I'll probably not get those skills after reset, either.

Anyhow...I think the reset could be refreshing.  It'll be nice to have a clean slate and skills to look forward to again.  Now, if only more types of food were truly useful after one masters the cooking tree...  (I swear, all I ever make now are a couple of the highest-level foods that I find to be efficient regarding time harvesting/money for ingredients/energy lost cooking vs energy recovered by eating the food/trade or sale value of the food...and Earthshakers and Flaming Humbabas for the boyfriend and to sell at auction.  I do gaze wistfully at all the recipes I can make and lament that they aren't really practical once you reach the end-game, or even a mature middle-game, other than tossing stacks of certain dishes into the grinder for street projects, where no one even gets to eat them. *heavy sigh*)

Wow...I digressed madly!  Long story short:  I am looking forward to the reset, with some nostalgia for my current accomplishments.

  • I am very excited for the reset.  At first I wasn't, but I completely blundered my way through the game not really taking the time to read everything/try out a lot of new things because when I first started I had some crazy idea that the reset would be much sooner than "6 weeks from now" and I wanted to experience as much as I could as quickly as I could.  So redoing a lot of the earlier content is very appealing to me, it will be like the first time.

I'm also excited because I know which skills I want to start with, where I want to live, etc.  Being anal and a perfectionist, I will definitely get every single skill available (I would never use unlearning because an unfinished skill tree is like a dagger to my eyes every time I look at it!...in fact, having an unlearn skill that I can't "learn" will annoy me to no end (I'm not sure how the unlearn skill will work, but I'm assuming after you learn it you can take away a skill...I wasn't picturing it as a skill tree or anything) ), but at least now I know which skills I prefer to start with and can really hone in from the beginning!

  • I am looking forward to it even though I hate losing everything I have worked to get so far.  I think it will be fun to start over knowing everything I now know.  I wonder how long it will take me to get a house with an animal pen?

  • I am neutral about the reset. The biggest downside to it is to me that we'll all be at the same point and get the same quests around the same time, which could conflict with one another.
I remember WoW too, with each expansion crowded "startin" areas where you could walk on the heads. I hope it will spread out a bit with Glitch.
Ofcourse, I can more easily solve this for myself by starting to play a week after launch...

Sad to loose house, animals, skills a bit, but only for a sec. Mostly sad because I will loose storage space!! Eventhough I'll say I want to save for a house, I know I will blow my cash on bags....
Everything else will come in time, I am in no hurry. (Except for bags and a house.)

  • I'm kind of looking forward to doing it all again since there are probably quests and things that I missed when I joined.  And by the time I'm Level 23 again, there will probably be new quests and things for me there too!

I will also save up for my 8K fruit house to begin with since I love my animals and don't want to move without them.

  • Pretty off topic (but feel no need the dredge up an old "Ack! What do we lose and what do we keep at reset?!" thread).

So my questions is: Will the calendar reset? It hasn't up to now but I can see a rational for reseting the calendar for launch. (I also fully expect to not get an answer on this one.)

  • I am looking forward to it like the other resets we have  had...Each one  ushers in a greater gaming experience with new advances...I will admit it was really nice of the Gods' to roll over our currants before...but,,,All the better to challenge us with.....It will be interesting to see what enhancements and game modifications will be implemented. Our little world certainly has grown!
The only thing I would miss would be my gnomes.....they were gifts from friends....

  • I'm ready...and actually would love 2 resets before Glitch goes live.  I need to figure out what to do first etc - and I do agree with posts in other places - that casts of thousands will be heading for the mines so tempers might flare.  A reset will help TS and us figure out what will happen when Glitch is available to the entire world!

  • I just want the game to go live.  I want to be able to have a house I can keep and strut around in hot dog costumes.  Testing such minor things and dragging out the beta has made me lose interest.  This feels so much longer than any big graphic/fighting MMO I've beta tested for.

  • I just want the game to be there all the time.. No, I won't be able to play all of the time.. I have to work to keep a roof over my head.. But at least when my work is done, I can come home and know the game will be open and I will not have to suffer through night after night of withdrawal until it's open again.

  • Interesting point Lord Bacon-o. I can see the logic in the calendar restarting from day one for launch, but I rather hope the calendar continues as it is now.

MeherMan, I'm ready for the reset, not much else I want to achieve at this stage, will miss my house though for a couple of days!

  • b3achy: in this case, reset does necessarily mean launch, unless there's more than one reset coming.  We've been told this flat out, repeatedly.  There was never any expectation that other resets would be the last.

sakmet: the game will continue to grow, and will never necessarily be "finished," so yes, new regions will be added, street projects will continue, new quests and skills and minigames will appear, plot lines will develop, and so on.  I don't know how much of this will have been completed by launch, but we were told that a lot of the new content for more advanced players would appear after launch.

As for bugs, you can see what's going on in the bug forum, but from my standpoint, it's still far too easy to accidentally cause undesired outcomes.  For example, it's very simple to donate "all" of something to a shrine instead of "one" due to the placement of the choices on the screen.  In testing, it's not the end of the world to lose a ton of items and get an emblem when you meant to get favor points instead, since we all know that a reset is coming anyway... but after launch, ick.

  • I'm sort of looking forward to it. I didn't know what the heck I was doing when I first started so I want to do it better after reset :P

I'm just hoping the devs do decide to keep the game invite-only (as they mentioned could happen on Twitter). That way we have people who actually want to play the game, instead of people just checking out the latest game and making demands and complaining and stuff. I've seen it happen before (not necessarily in this game) and it causes more than a few good people to quit.

  • @Piratice Regarding keeping the game invite only even after going live: When looking at the Leader Boards you'll see lots of invitees who have played a few levels and have not come back, so it's not really a given if an invite = involvement. I say open Glitch to the unwashed masses and let them assimilate - no fear post reset.  :)
