Suggestion: Map Notes

Second in priority to hints (http://alpha.glitch.com/forum/ideas/1897/), I would also recommend allowing the player to enter some kind of map notes.

Problem: I end up wandering aimlessly around the streets trying to remember where I saw the nearest butterfly or paper tree, wishing I had just written it down on a sticky note.

Solution: Allow users to add a short personal note to their own map about each street. Hovering over the street pops up the note text so I would only have to hover over each street to find where the things are that I want to remember (much like how I find street vendors now)

Recommendations:
- Streets that have user notes have a special symbol, next to the vendor symbol, that can be hovered over. Streets with no note have no note symbol.
- Hovering over the note symbol shows you your note for that road.
- Allow users to also delete a note from a street so the note and symbol no longer appear.

  • Well...now that I'm officially done-in after trying to find the right place to put this question/idea - I think this post comes the closest :D

I do have a (rather strange, I'm sure :P ) question about the map...will it be color coded?
The reason I'm asking is because when I was using it during game play, it was rather hard for me to read due to my poor eyesight.
I think color coding, at least the vendors/street spirits, would help with locating certain things one might be looking for without having to strain the old eyeballs :D :D :D (copied and pasted from another post I had asked this in)

  • These notes would be pretty annoying to maintain, a consequence of having a dynamic world. I agree that having notes would be a good option, but for things like what trees are where, I think that should be marked on the map anyway, not manually added and updated by users (because, let's face it, pretty much everybody would be doing it).

  • I would not mind personal notes.

  • Windows 7 comes with a program called Sticky Notes... I love it for the map-type stuff.

The world is organic. Pigs, chickens, and butterflies get moved around... more get created in strange spots, it's really hard to keep track of what was where since it can change quickly.

Even the trees can change... we now have the ability to poison them in order to harvest for wood planks, or because we need the dirt patch. What goes in next depends on the players and what they plant. Theoretically, someone could wander through Groddle and turn every single tree into a fruit tree... if they really wanted to annoy people.

Stoot said in another thread (in response to a question if there was a vendor on every street):
    alpha.glitch.com/forum/gene...
"Almost every street, but not all (this is going to change in the not too distant future: the street spirits will stop selling stuff and vendors will be in or around buildings which are clustered together)."

    Expect big changes.

The map has slight shading differences between regions, and to see what is on a street you mouse over the little icons. I do like the idea of being able to put little marker dots on the map thought. As you enter a street.. the loading window lists out what's on the street, which can be handy if you are looking for something in particular.

  • Yes, please, I get sooo very lost! Or is that part of the "fun"?? The maps need to be more user friendly. I do like the "tracker" feature, "go to", it helped me out a lot tonight.

  • At least it would be nice to have more markers for permanent items, like the bureaucracy office, housing districts, subways, etc. It would be OK with me if these are added automatically to the map after they are stumbled across by the user, if it's important for them to be discovered through exploration. I would like an easier way to find them again once I've been there, though.

  • Agree with Shepherdmoon...the permanent structures and at least neighborhoods need to be marked on the maps. It would be nice to have different symbols for the different vendors (vice having to hover on the map to figure it out).

I was thinking it would be nice if there was color coding to identify which 'streets'/areas I have already visited (especially in the beginning since the first time you visit an area you get xp...it would really help you identify areas that you still need to explore). If there is an eventual benefit to visiting areas multiple times (like an xp for visiting an area 50 times or 100 times), then it would be nice if it gave me a visual progress of how far I am (ie, changes from red to yellow to green depending on a set number of times I've been there).

I will say that I love that I can choose a destination on a map and it gives me directions on how to get there...that is a spiffy feature!

  • It helps not to get lost if you have the map make a trail for you. Once it's made, you'll get an arrow underneath the map. Click on the arrow and it'll auto-walk you into the next street unless you have to jump.

  • Oooh, I totally agree with b3achy that areas we have been in should be color-coded! That would help my wanderlust considerably :). Also, I agree with others that the way we are given directions to get to desired areas is very useful.
