Danger!

While playing this last test, it occurred to me that the Glitch world is just far too safe. I'm not wanting some sort of platform game, but the game is truly missing a sense of danger (which can make for added excitement).

I've seen and read there is a Rook storyline. I've done the one Rook quest, something about breaking a Rook egg if I remember right, but I'm wondering how that is going to play out in the game.

Being the wonderful and fantastic world of Glitch, there has got to be a unique to approach to this that yields the tension of a near death experience OR something of consequence in the game without making the game frustrating or a platformer (like Mario or Little Big Planet).

I am going to give this some thought, but was wondering what everyone else thinks about the element of danger in the game.

Thoughts?

  • I make my own danger by getting stuck on objects in-game (although I did get my head stuck in an iron railing in RL when I was six or so - who knew that ears flatten really nicely on the way in, but not so much when you try to pull your head back out).

But I like the idea of increased danger - perhaps in certain maps (i.e. underwater?) energy gets sapped at a faster rate - more than Wintry Place, which does get your pulse to rise a little more. Or objects zap you if you touch them... Or that firefly was really a wasp...

  • I personally like it without the danger. I like the critical thinking aspect of the quests instead. It will be interesting to see how the Rook develops...

  • Stoot Barfield once told me that the Glitch Universe has multiple futures. For example, Fireflex 3000 Labs is in a future where Alph became all-powerful! Perhaps there could be Anti-Glitches sent backwards in time from a future where the Rook succeeded! For every new Glitch that joins the game! There could be an interdimensional warfront where you have to fight off Anti-Glitches trying to travel backwards through time. If you fail to hold off an Anti-Glitch, it breaks into Ur and starts vandalizing it. I.E. Killing trees, using up resources, maybe even seasoning regular eggs to make Rook eggs! To fight off Anti-Glitches, you'd need to learn the Anti-Anti-Glitch skill, which allows you to battle Anti-Glitches. As you learn later versions of this skill, (Anti-Anti-Glitch I, Anti-Anti-Glitch II, etc) your Anti-Glitch fighting skills get stronger and you're allowed to go on more dangerous missions, maybe even getting to visit the Rook-Dominated Bizarro-Ur and reclaiming it in the name of the Giants!
Well, whaddya say? Cool idea, right?

  • Not so sure glitch needs danger. Farmville doesn't have any, and it is the second-biggest browser-based social-networking-centered farming game in the world.

Not to compare glitch to farmville, its far better, but if they had farmvilles success all us users would have a lot more features to play with.

  • I agree with a little more danger, but not with the fighting. I like the idea of a game where you "save the world" by petting trees and meditating.

I was imagining something a little like in the Neverending Story movie. If you neglect some part of the world, the Rook takes power over it and destroy it, like "The Nothing" does. And you have to fight back to save it, but the fighting wouldn't be something with swords, but maybe a special kind of group meditation. Like the peat or barnacle thing but with meditation.
Or maybe releasing lots and lots of healthy piggies.

I really like the peaceful, positive and constructive feeling of Glitch. I also like the fact that each petting, each watering, each feeding lead to a better and safer world.

  • My husband was watching me play last test and expressed a desire to choose to be a bad guy; he felt Glitch was just too impossibly twee. To take off from what you're saying, Thrindos, I suspect he would like to *be* an Anti-Glitch.

  • I agree with Moumoushou, the thing that drew me to Glitch was the non violence - there's plenty of those games out there in all forms. I do like the idea of a special group meditation to save something / preserve the peace.

I played FarmVille for some time (level 95 I think) but finally gave it away, the consistent lag with way too much stuff they keep bringing out, the constant begging and returning of so many gifts twice daily killed it for me. Not to mention litle response by Zynga to most problems and their lack of communication in general.

I have to hand it to Stoot and his team of devs, they are always around answering questions both here in the forums and in-game keeping us as informed as possible. Thanks guys!

  • I agree that Glitch isn't best served by introducing a fighting or violent element. Danger doesn't only come in those forms.

Perhaps there are parts of the Giants imaginations that are more dark in nature and thus more dangerous. Traveling to these darker areas perhaps puts you at greater risk of dying, the environment is more treacherous, there are things that can harm you (like Kaushka mentioned). Perhaps these darker more dangerous areas can be transformed to be more like the peaceful zones in Glitch, but not without great effort and sacrifice.

If Glitch isn't more than just resource gathering, making things, and street projects... it may get old and not live up to the concept of game never ending. There needs to be greater purpose with some tension or long term playability will likely not be there for most players.

All that said, I am still enjoying the game a great deal.

  • Risk good, violence and fighting bad.

  • I like the fact that there is little danger. There are many games to play that offer that. That's why Glitch appeals to me.

  • I do think there needs to be more risk, in order to offer additional challenge, but the challenge should always be avoidable. en's idea of having dangerous areas was good. Of course, there should always be some greater reward for the increased risk. This way, more advanced or daring players can increase the challenge they experience in the game while more cautious players can avoid it.

  • I hope Glitch will keep violence out of the game....that is one of the reason why play this game.

  • A certain element of tension wouldn't hurt the game... like getting players to cooperate in solving problems to thwart evil plan from the Rooks to take over different areas. Like a time limited "street project".

There could even been a simultaneous pro Rooks "anti-glitch" project going on... which ever side completes their project first decides the fate of the area sort of thing.

I truly believe we need more social cooperative elements to build a strong glitch community.

  • I think it would be fun to have some non-violent danger. One aspect of minecraft I like is that all is peaceful during the day and you're busy going about your work, but then suddenly at night the zombies come out. So, when you notice it's getting dark, you better run to your shelter fast (or get ready to fight). I don't want zombies or fighting in Glitch, but it would be fun if there as a certain game period (like night time, which I realize isn't implemented yet) where the rook strikes and you better hurry and water your trees & shelter your animals or they will be more vulnerable to the rook's reach.

  • Eleanor Rigby: "My husband was watching me play last test and expressed a desire to choose to be a bad guy; he felt Glitch was just too impossibly twee. To take off from what you're saying, Thrindos, I suspect he would like to *be* an Anti-Glitch."

    Haha. Same for my son!

  • I like the danger idea. Maybe it should be in just some realms, and in that sense optional.

I play minecraft in peaceful mode. The zombies just annoy me. /confession

But what I love about minecraft that is absent in Glitch (I know I have said this before) is that you can create things. Please fix that.

  • For me... the Wintery Place was Very Dangerous... perhaps more risky areas such as those, where you really have to pay attention to what you are doing. Perhaps adding a (very) limited number of falls that send you to Hell... because I *really* like it that you don't get hurt from falling.

I really dislike the idea of violence in Glitch. The Races fill a much needed competitive void, so I don't see a reason for it in this game. Aside from that, if people are looking for a hack & slash, there are other games out there. The fact there's no violence will help keep some of the worst gaming elements out - Glitch simply isn't that appealing to them. Instead of destructive violence, Glitch is different... a breath of fresh air. the most appealing factors are healthy competition and cooperative construction. I think Glitch is marginally harder if you decide to go a loner route.

Glitch is one of the few games I've seen I'd be happy to allow my tween to play - and one of the only we could play together! If it pulls him away from That Other Addictive Game, I'd happily throw real money at it. It stands a good chance of it too... he was Really Interested in what I was doing during the last test. So yeah, it's a campy kind of cute... personally - that's what I like about it.

I agree that we shouldn't add violence/fighting, though I do like the idea of "Anti-Glitches", and dangerous areas.

  • I wouldn't mind a little tension, like the Rook quest, or the possibility of more dangerous areas, especially with the notion, as @en suggested up-thread, of "healing" or restoring damaged areas. I was intrigued, the test before last I think it was, by the sick trees that needed loving to make them well.

I _don't_ like the idea that potentially gangs of level 156 players with hundreds of zombie pigs could spoil the experience for lower level or newbie players.

  • Yeah, Glitch needs to have a dark side we could explore -- probably in the form of dangerous or damaged areas.

  • I like the idea of having some danger in the game - Hell and the lava in the races is fun.

  • If I want danger, I can play Halo and get killed several times every minute. If that's what Glitch becomes, I'll just play Halo. Said in a more positive way, I like the gentle, friendly, absurdity of Glitch. That's what makes it unique. I would like to see it stay that way.

  • ONLY optional danger. You can relax while playing Glitch, which is one of my favorite things about it.
Posted 22 months ago by Cupcake Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I would prefer that the element of danger or risk be optional in Glitch. Competitions like the racing would be great. But the thing that really attracts me to this game is the peaceful, at-your-own-pace play. I enjoy not worrying that something will come along and destroy/steal all that I have built.

  • LOL! I didnt read all this, but i read about the anti-glitches. Heheh :) But sure, lets just throw a battle arena into the works. You don't have to be a gladiator if you dont want to. Some people might want to spend all their time fighting ($ if you win!) or some might chose never to fight. Some may want to place bets on fights ;)

  • I read that if one runs out of food or cannot meditate, one can end up going to Hell. Hell is black and white. You can get out but have to work at it.
Posted 21 months ago by Shauntie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yeah Myst, its more about running out of energy that will send you to hell! I do suppose running out of food and hitting your daily meditation limit is usually the culprit though!

  • I wouldn't like to see stress added to Glitch, except as an option to some, in discrete areas. I really appreciate being able to relax in a game, I get enough stress irl, lol. I do play some "fighting" games, but only when I'm in the mood. As far as competition is concerned, one of the things that damaged play in Faunasphere, was that "sharing" turned into "me first", where people who were used to more violent games went around stealing things other players were working at, and deliberately annoying others, because it was "fun". I like the idea of having caves, or other areas that would be in some way dangerous...you could go there, or avoid them, at will. Me, I think for now I'll just go bumbling about, petting trees & pigs, & jumping up to touch butterflies, haha.
