Meat Collector location

Do meat collectors work outside of my house/yard? I was thinking how nice it would be to have a large heard of pigs and a bunch of meat collectors in a location where I am not trying to tend trees and garden.

Am I thinking about installing meat/milk collectors on my block and fill the block with pigs/butterflies. I was also thinking about using the inside of a house to keep all the animals and leave the backyard open for trees and gardening and use the area near the back door to store my various bags.

Has anyone implemented an unusual heard keeping technique? Any recommendations?

  • I've heard that meat collectors can be used outside of your backyard, but they can also be picked up and carted away by nefarious types...

I don't think you can keep animals indoors - they don't come in on their own, and if you release one inside, it'll wander around until it gets outside again. You can definitely keep the meat collectors indoors, though, but that doesn't solve your ease-of-gardening problem.

  • I thought animals wouldn't cross thresholds, so if you released a pig in your living room, theoretically, it would stay in your living room.

  • You sure can keep animals indoors. It depends on where you release them. I released a pig and a chicken and a butterfly inside my house and was then surprised they stayed in there (now I live in a cave house in the Heights though, so maybe they can't climb ladders?). So when I got more animals I put them out in my yard instead. Though I agree, trying to get at your garden plots with seven pigs in the way is tricky. On the issue of filling your block with animals, you may want to ask neighbors if that's okay by them? In a group I'm in, someone said a person had put 50 chickens in their block, and it was making it very difficult to enter their own house what with the flying up and around. I know pigs don't do that...just thought it might be a nice courtesy to those you share a "block" with.

  • Oh: my house has a yard on the same level as my house. I forgot about the two-leveled houses! Animals definitely would stay indoors with those.

But I do distinctly remember releasing a pig indoors and watching it walk outside, where it stayed. Maybe I was imagining things, though.

  • I released a chicken deep indoors after the reset and it went to my backyard to stay within a minute.

  • I released 3 pigs, 3 butterflies and 1 chicken in the lower area of my house in Shimla Mirch. No probs with the piggies or butterflies, but the chicken has flapped and squawked its way, up and down, throughout the whole 3 levels, thank goodness pigs dont climb ladders!

  • @Teena, now wouldn't it be hysterical if pigs DID climb ladders? You would think butterflies could fly outside though, wouldn't you? I have one that has been stuck up by my ceiling for several test and can barely be gotten at, even with spinach (because it is so small and spinach jumping so inaccurate). Dumb thing.

  • I had my first chick when I had a house in the Meadow (someone gave it to me) and I fed it a whole bunch of grain, not knowing it would burst forth into chickenhood. It did, and I was standing in my living room at the time, so yes, I had a chicken in my house for a while until I bought a new house.
