Not a true representation of friends list

How is that someone can have you on their friend's list but you don't have them and vise-versa?  If someone doesn't make the friendship "mutual" why should they be on your list?  Confused.

  • If you befriend someone wouldn't you want to see their posts and such? Even if they don't accept you?

  • Think of friending someone as "following" them on twitter rather than friending them on Facebook. You get to see their happenings, but they don't have to see yours.

  • Gabi - you are incorrect.

Case in point - I was reading the homepage and was only seeing a one-way conversation of Stria with Stoot.  I knew I had Stoot on MY friends list; however, I was not on his - therefore, could not see his post.

  • its called stalker mode :P
they do get a notice that you added them as a buddy. If they really don't want you to see their status updates they can block you

  • Well I for one, don't like people who have chosen NOT to befriend me on my friend's list - makes the name of the list a misnomer.

  • Skwid, you're exactly right.  We're using more of the Twitter model, so we leave it up to you to decide who you want to count as friends.

MzFroggie, you should double-check to make sure you've added stoot as a friend--I didn't see him in your Buddy List. That may be why his updates aren't showing up in your feed.  Try it out and if it doesn't work, let us know via a bug report.

  • Thanks Blanky - I removed Stoot from my list when I realize it was a form of stalking and not a mutual friendship list - however, prior to that, I was NOT seeing anything he (Stoot) posted on the home page.

  • I heard every time someone unfriends Stoot he adds another day's worth of game closure...

  • MzFroggie, you should see updates from anyone you've added to your buddy list. If there's anyone who still isn't showing up in your activities feed, please submit a bug report and we'll follow up on that.

But it also shouldn't feel like stalking. As r0gu3 mentioned, it's possible to block anyone who's added you to their buddy list if you don't want them to see your own updates. Generally speaking, people are happy to be added as friends whether they make it mutual or not.

  • Oh shit, Skwid... say it ain't so  ;)

  • Thanks again Blanky - I will submit a bug report should I encounter that problem again.

  • I mean, it's not stalking to follow celebrities on Twitter.  There is a difference between adding someone as a friend on Glitch vs finding their phone number, their address, following them around, etc (which would actually be stalking).

I like how it's set up now, if someone is really bugging you then you can just block them.

    And Lol @Skwidward

  • MzFroggie (love the new name BTW)  I am in the same situation you are/were.  I was also going to take stoot off my buddy list as he did not add me back apparently, but if it means adding an extra day of game closure, guess I will go with the (icky)  possible stalker label. :-) (not really a stalker, honest!)

  • +1 marycontrary!  I'M not going to be blamed for the game being closed any more than it already is! :)

  • Is there a simple way to see if people you befriended have befriended you back, and vise versa?

  • That would be very nice Marla

  • Yikes.. added Stoot back just to be on safe side and not bring bad luck to the game..  Going to take black marker to screen and scratch out "friends" and scribble in "following" that way it makes sense.

  • The people I list as 'friends' are often people I like to directly IM during the game, for whatever reason.  I truly don't care if they have me on their direct-access IM list too.

And the 'following' is actually a bit of a pain (see the thread about Home page overflowing with disconnected thoughts and statements).  I'd like to be able to hide that entirely.

  • I don't think I like the twitter model in a game like this.   Firstly, I don't like the idea of game "celebrities" but its also got to be annoying for the person who is  contacted by too many people.

I'm also not sure I like having my current location on my profile.  In secondlife, most people don't even share their location on the map with their game friends unless it is necessary.   Having too many "friends" can get in the way of getting things done while playing the game.  If you get hammered with instant messages as soon as you log in (not an issue at this point but it could be an issue for people some time in the future) causes people to want to set up alternative accounts so they can get things done, and then gift their main account with their earnings.
