Quests & the Magic Rock

Right now, the magic rock gives us all our quests. For some quests, which are tutorial type tasks that teach us about the game or how to use a new skill, this makes sense. Other quests are more like little stories, and perhaps we could find those on our own as we travel around the world, rather than the rock suddenly giving it to us. For example, instead of the rock suddenly telling me about the etsi life catalog quest, I could come across the little dustball somewhere in the game and he could ask me for help with finding the object of no intrinsic value and transport me there if I agree to help. Or in the case of the snow cones quest, perhaps I could meet a character in the new desert regions who complains about how hot it is and asks me to get him some snow cones. It would be more fun to get quests as I travel around the world rather than them just popping up out of the blue.

  • +1 as well - this would make it a real incentive to explore into the very depths of the firebog regions, Ilmenskie etc.

  • I agree FrankenPaula. I didn't like having the quests popping up out of nowhere when I first entered the game. There are SO many for new players it seems overwhelming.Perhaps a few things like that would be fine, but the idea of stumbling across items along the way is more natural and flowing, less intrusive. They could appear like Rube when your at that point in your game play and not be available to those who have already done those quests.

  • I like this idea too. Hopefully the talking trees, animals and rocks are a build up for this sort of functionality. I'd still like the rock to keep track of the quests I've been given by others, in case I stop or get distracted in the middle of one.

  • I like the idea, but I think I'd like it better if, say in your example of finding a dustball somewhere, you could accept the quest and have it in your log to do when you are ready, rather than have to go back to the dustball later. Because I'm very forgetful and if I'm not ready to do it at that moment, I'll probably forget to go back (if I don't forget where it is) when I do have a moment to try it.

Unless of course, you meant for it to be put in your log if if you accept it.

  • Why wouldn't you accept it?

  • Yes, it should go into your quest log and be accessible from the rock after you accept it. @xoxJulie you might not accept a quest if you already have a lot to do and don't feel like adding more. Of course, you could always go back to that character to accept it later. At some point the game will (hopefully) have a lot of quests and content so that if you accept every quest it could become overwhelming (it can already feel that way at the early levels).

  • Julie, my thoughts were, if I'm on some street for a specific purpose, and run across some random dustball that is like, "I'll teleport you here to do this quest." I may not want to do it at that time (not knowing how long it will take and being focused on other things)... and I might forget to go back later and do it when I do have time. So it'd be better to be able to be able to choose whether do it right away or accept the quest for later, i.e. have two options when you come across it: "I'll teleport you now!" or "Accept this quest to do later" (thus putting it in the log).

So that's what I mean by it going into the log for later- which FrankenPaula clarified is what she intended.

And FrankenPaula brings up a good point that the log can get overwhelming with lots of quests sometimes, especially as the game grows. I know on some games, quests just build up and build up, and it can get soooo overwhelming if you can't manage to get them done easily (not that they should be too easy).

  • This is an awesome idea. Glitch could do with more NPCs, I think - there's a lot of possibility for amusing/interesting interactions there.

It could also be a cool way to get new recipes, for example - maybe there could be an NPC in Northwest Passage, shivering and complaining about how cold he is, and he could really go for a Chilly-Busting Chili right now. Don't know how to make it? No problem! Just bring him 1 beer, 2 meats, 30 beans, a hot pepper, a cumin and an onion, and he'll show you how to make it (and add the recipe to your book!)
