STFU! We're in beta!

I see the "We're in beta" phrase used a lot when people are upset that someone has an opinion about the game that they think is invalid. I have two issues with this.

First, yes, we are in beta, so voicing opinion now is important for the game. There is no such thing as an invalid opinion, if you don't like someone's opinion then big deal! Say something constructive if you want to but beta doesn't stand for Be Extremely Trite Asshats, so chill - and be nice. Before clicking post, re-read your post and ask yourself "does this sound rude?" If it is - re-word it. Just be nice.

Second, many of us did not ask to be in beta. When I signed up the game was fully launched. I loved the game so much that I didn't mind staying and rolling with the changes but it's not what I expected. But it's okay, even though I wasn't expecting to be a beta tester I still enjoy the game and love seeing all the changes. The point is that there are plenty of Glitchen who don't really know what their role in the game as a beta tester really is, so take a deep breath and just calm yo self.

The game is going to continue to change (I'm sure) well after the game is re-launched, telling someone that they are wrong because we are in beta is completely irrelevant.

  • +1 to this post and -1 to the few noted for lengthy and spiteful responses "defending Glitch" if stoot is all crying and pettily patting his tiny blue blankee if anybody describes any problem with Glitch.

Imagine Glitch forums as the kiss-ups demand to see them -- nothing ever posted other than "Glitch is so awesome and the devs know best!" Maybe we should create a new forum that follows that rule; intead of calling it a forum, it would be a "Bore 'em."

  • I think you are poisoning all of Ur with your opinion, so there.

Ok, also: I find it incredibly amusing that folks want to jump me about having an opinion.  I am perfectly free to say what I like/dont like/care/dont care about.  If you dont like it you can kiss my green elf ass. (I dont mean you OP, I'm glad you brought this up, thank you)

I come to Glitch to goof around, its not my job and if its not fun then its boring.  I dont find doing a task I already did to be very interesting.

When I am in the recording studio, I am very careful about excessive playback of a song; the reason why is very simple: I will get bored or burnt out on it VERY FAST.  So as a rule I try to limit the amount of times I have to really pay attention in fine detail to something unless its absolutely needed.  If my friend/client is slamming some guitar parts out and he wants to review it (which is unusual really) I might leave the room and do something else.

Excessive playback can really ruin the spirit of a piece of material, the fun and newness of it is diminished and it starts to become predictable.  I dont enjoy that. Its my job as a recording engineer to know a song, but when it becomes boring to me, thats the end of it being a creative effort and it becomes an uphill battle.  It makes it doubly hard to be enthusiastic about it when it comes time to produce that music; when it comes time to show it to folks and say 'here it is! love it!!'.

I enjoy blasting it when it is time to listen and see if the timing on 4 separate vocal tracks is exact; if the bass line sucks or if there are issues with clicks/hums/gophers/phone ring tones/zombies/clouds/fart sounds out of nowhere.

That last one might be me, microphones are sensitive and especially if you have the gain ramped all the way up.  :-)  Just kidding - dont run your mics with the gain all the way up, you get crap sound very fast unless you are recording something thats very low and not all that dynamic.  Then by all means, go for it.

Recording music (or anything really) is a science but its tempered with creativity.  I dont always know the what the results will be, since what is making the music are people and they have different moods and feelings each day and sometimes in the space of seconds.    A lot of times its a joy, we are making something out of nothing and then its off to market it.  Once in a great while its like pushing a rock up a very large hill.  Luckily, I work with professionals and its very rarely like that, but the potential is there all the time.

Now, how this applies to the game here - Glitch Beta - is that when I harvest a tree it takes the same time it did, and nets me the same result: 12 things.  Thats fine.  But what I find stupid is that mining is just all sorts of totally screwed up.  It should be the same amount of time it was - brief - and should net me the same amount of rocks - a lot.

If that was a starting point, that would be ok.  But when I tried it, it was slow and I rapidly became disinterested.  I know that I could blow iMG on speeding up mining IF I had that card appear, but I dont see the point of it.  Its screwed up, let TS fix it.  Why is harvesting fast and mining slow?  That aint good.

We (as beta testers) should have a page/tab on glitch where we can just purchase the cards we want and not have to be punished by slogging through cards we might not need or use, just to find the ones we will use daily, IN MY OPINION.

  • Just because someone says, "we're in Beta", it doesn't mean they want you to shut up, or stop voicing your opinion.  Yes, there are a few people who are tired of what they call "whining" and take it a step further, but I know when I post mitigating or contrary comments, I'm just giving you my take on the matter.  Often, I'd like to see if you might revise your opinion with a broader perspective on the matter, or if you might have a reasonable counter argument.  When you immediately cry foul, though, you are actually taking away your own voice in the matter, when you could say, "Ah, yes, but it still bothers me because of this... " instead.

I have often found in this forum and in others that it's best to never take anything personally, and to respond to anything you don't like with a reasoned counter argument.  It serves everyone better when you do so.

  • If you really don't want to be in beta, the easy solution is to wait for relaunch.
Posted 7 months ago by larky lion Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Larky Lion: See above
@Carl Projectorinski: My main gripe is that instead of talking about the matter at hand there are some who feel it's better to belittle and be rude to the person who brought it up, by basically saying "this is beta, you're being a twerp/crybaby/idiot/whatever."
Posted 7 months ago by La Mariposa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • This is true.  However, I have mostly witnessed myself the opposite scenario, where a reasonable counterpoint was made to an original post, and then people cry "stop telling us to STFU!"  I think a little more calm on everyone's part is in order, including a lot of original posts.
Posted 7 months ago by Carl Projectorinski Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think a little more calm is in order :)

And … be the change you want to see in the world: if you feel like someone is saying you're a whiner, calling them an ass-kisser is hardly going to make it better.

  • Having come back to Glitch after the Guild Wars 2 beta...I can guarantee that everyone in this community is 300% more level-headed, mature, and reasonable than 95% of the people giving "feedback" to ArenaNet. Just my two cents.

  • Saying we're in beta is not saying what someone else said is wrong. Instead of defining the word beta we just say we're still in beta. It in no way means that people can't have their opinions and complaints but sometimes people need to check themselves because ya we're still in beta.

  • Two scenarios:

"Mining is a bit different from how it was."
    "We're in beta."

"I invited you into my house and you messed up the rugs and stole all my stuff including my funpickle and then you turned out to be an alt who was never seen or heard from again and everything is ruined."
    "We're in beta."

There's a difference between these and a spectrum of events in between them, so it's hard to criticize everyone for the same statement . . .

  • Okay, I'll bite. what the heck does "we're in beta" mean? I've begun to realize I have no idea what the expected code of behavior is, since this phase is being used by all and sundry whether as a complaint or a defense: It appears to be a club to beat up those they don't like/don't agree with, or alternatively. it's used as the go-to defense/apologia (never by TS, I should point out) whenever it suits. I'm waiting for someone like Steven Colbert to turn it into a twitter hashtag #wereinbeta any day now. Are there commonly understood expectations for experience and appropriate behavior, ways of giving feedback? Maybe a refresher would be useful? Or maybe we could all simply take a deep breath and cut each other some slack? Different tastes/preferences make for a richer experience for everyone.

  • What "we're in beta" is supposed to mean is this:

"This is not a finished game.  What you are so upset about right now may be a non-issue tomorrow, or next month, it may even be a bug or mistake, so keep up the feedback but have some patience."

  • That may be true Carl, but some people forget that MMOs are never truly finished and are constantly changing, which is what the OP was trying to say. At least, that's how I interpreted it.

I, too, joined Glitch when it was out of beta and loved it then, still love it now. Sure there's changes here and there, but I think that over time they will be tweaked to be better.

Yes, the cards are nice and completely randomized which makes it a gamble, really. To phrase that one movie's adage to apply, "Life is like a hand of upgrades, you never know what you're gonna get." There's some bugs with them, and staff is working on it. If you send in reports or put it in the ideas forum, it does get read, contrary to the belief.

So we're in beta where everything and anything can go wrong, but it's best that you actually know this, rather than playing a released game that has tons of bugs and kinks instead of running smoothly with changes here and there that aren't as buggy. That, to me, is what it means to be in beta, at least in a MMO.

  • There' a difference between expressing a dislike for a change after trying it out for a little while, and actually testing it, versus not logging in to the game before coming to the forums to claim that everything is ruined forever because of this one change that you haven't even tried yet.

For me, if you want to complain, that's fine, we're in beta, it's your job to point out things like that, as well as bugs. But you better make sure that you are fully informed about how what you are complaining about works before you decide it's useless and not for you.
Posted 7 months ago by Kristen Marie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Sometimes changes become permanent, and staff doesn't know that we don't like them until we speak up.  Sometimes changes are bugs, and we don't know that because we're not told how things are supposed to work.  The more we discuss changes and ask about them, the better the game will be in the long run.

  • Agreed, but complaining about a very obviously done on purpose change without even trying it is not the same as "hey, where did all my superharvests go?"

  • +1 Merth and +1 Dotcom.

There's a difference between offering a different perspective, or some constructive feedback, on someone's post and outright dismissing them and calling them whiners for expressing an opinion.  Also, I can't stand the "TS can do no wrong" cult.  Yes, TS staff are often awesome, but they can also be dicks.  If they do something praiseworthy, I will offer praise, but if they act like dicks then I'm gonna say something about that too.

Yes, we are in beta.  So lets keep offering our beta-tester feedback and not get all high-and-mighty on people with different opinions.
