Having keyboard/mouse problems? Try this! [update: enabled for everyone]

Update: Are you using Chrome? Please read this thread.

If you're having "focus" problems where the game seems to stop responding to the keyboard or mouse, try this URL and report back whether things get better, stay the same, or are worse (and what those issues are/were, which web browser you are using, and what operating system):

[link removed, it is enabled for everyone]

Please only report problems related to the above; nothing about performance, house decorations, the Rube, etc.

Thank you for testing!

  • So that I'm clear, is this for the sort of problem I have when I'm switching back to my browser from another application (or even from another tab in my browser) and I have to click three or four times before I can do anything? (My trackpad doesn't have marked buttons for left and right buttons, and half the time I blame myself for not clicking in the "right" place, but now I see maybe it isn't me...)

  • That is SO much better, is back to pretty much normal for me with that link. I either wouldn't move at all with the keyboard or I'd end up running to the very end of the street. I've been having to a) triple-click to a jump to make the keyboard work; b) hit the IMG menu (oddly, that would sometimes work to unfreeze it); c) reload the game. Win 7 64bit, latest Flash (11.3.300.265) and Firefox.

  • YES!  it's light years better for me.  No more running to the end of the street; no more freezing up on a simple click.  Win 7 64-bit, Flash 11.3.300.262.

  • Much better! I was constantly running to the edges of streets, not moving at all, making the walking motion without actually going anywhere...having none of these problems anymore.

  • Much better! And for some reason, less laggy in other ways as well; it seems. That could be my imagination, I suppose, but I haven't had to reload the game since I switched to this version.

  • Seems incredibly better.  Mine was being triggered when I accidentally used the right mouse click and would freeze usually create a total freeze for 2-3 mins.  Now I can't even make it do that.

Or it would move the focus up about 3 inches so that I couldn't click on anything in the top half of the screen.  Trying to click on somone's friends list name would open the chat window for a random group.

  • Another thing I noticed:  recently when putting items into bags they would frequently go into the "wrong" bag -- normally one bag to the left of my target bag.
In this version I no longer have the problem, I tested with a bunch of items and bags. Yayy!

  • Much better here as well.  In one browser (Chrome) I was freezing and lagging when I walked, jumped and also if I passed an interactive item like sloth trees, chickens and other players.  I did this test using Chrome 20.0.113.2 Win Vista Flash 11.3.300.265 and the problems seemed to go away.

When using Firefox, I do the crazy runs where I would head in a direction and then instead of jumping, stopping etc. I would just keep running fast.  FF 4.0 Beta12

  • Still having a problem getting back to the main game window from the chat windows. I use my keyboard exclusively and tab between the panes. This URL worked great for about 5 minutes before I had to double click (mouse) in the game window to get KB functionality back. I've been experiencing this problem for ~3 days now.

    Chrome 20.0.1132.57/Mac OS

I should add that when left alone (no double clicking) focus occasionally returns by itself a few minutes later or by changing to another browser tab and back again.

  • Speed is much faster for me, but I am getting some sound issues.  multiple different background music playing at once, loss of tool sounds (i.e no scratching hoe sound, or water glug sound from watering)
also lost the image of my hoe & watering can at one point.
windows 7, firefox 14 but am using an older flash 11.2.202.233 (because newest flash causes serious cpu usage)

  • " loss of tool sounds (i.e no scratching hoe sound, or water glug sound from watering)also lost the image of my hoe & watering can at one point."

I had the same issue before reading this topic and trying the new URL so I'm not sure it's strictly related to it

  • It's helping me a lot. I'm another that's not walking off to the edge of a street or having to click multiple times when switching between tabs, or even from chat to game. I also agree the speed is better. My back yard music is overlapping itself, though. (after the refresh) It wasn't doing that before, but certain music caused massive lag/street loading time. Haven't tested that out, yet.

Those of you with sound problems, they are unrelated. Those of you who say "worse" -- please elaborate what it was doing before, and in what ways it is worse, or I cannot help you.

I'll probably release this change for everyone on Monday.

  • My movement was very responsive when I first logged in and my house loaded. I went to another player's house with no problems. Then I returned to the World from my home, suddenly the game was was unplayable, very delayed movement. I tried to open up a tab to get to the forum to post this message and everything froze up. I went into task manager to shut down my browser and it started responding again. I'm playing on Windows Vista - Firefox

  • Sorry! I found that it was slower, so much slower that the sloths gave up on me while I was trying to feed them. Jumping very hard as impossible to get timing right.

Not sure if this is relevant to you, but I tried to look around using the 'c' key and it didn't work.

My connection isn't the best at times, so it might be that, but immediately i used the usual way to enter the game it was much better again.

I have been having lots ot trouble with having to click on the screen to get my Glitch to move, she also keeps heading for the side of the screen and walking on the spot. This can sometimes be fixed by pressing 'alt' or, sometimes, jumping up and down frees her again.

Hope this is more use than my first post :D

  • Ahhh, significantly better!  I mainly play by keyboard, and I used to have problems with switching between tabs and coming back to the game--like hitting 'd' would suddenly bring up the imagination menu, for some reason.  Not happening here, as far as I can tell.  So many thanks!  (Chrome 20.0.1132.57, Mac OSX 10.6.8)

  • MacBook Air, OSX 10.7.4, Chrome 20.0.1132.57, Flash 11.3.300.265

I used to be able to bounce back into the screen from chat via the right and left arrows, noticed a few days ago that this didn't work anymore (bummer!). Then I noticed that when I was moving left and right, my spacebar wouldn't work for jump anymore. I reloaded, thinking I smelled a Flash crash coming up. Each time, I would come back in and things would work for a bit (except for arrowing back into the game from chat) and then abruptly not work anymore.

I used this link you posted, and noticed that I could not get the /who to work until I typed it into the local activity chat box. Also, I've noticed that people in group chats aren't listed any more... iirc, there used to be a listing right when I logged in of who was currently in the chat (except for the Help channel). The arrows and spacebar worked for a few moments, then quit again (after fixing the /who by typing it into local chat)... I know we're not supposed to mention other bugs, but I wondered whether they were related so here it is.

I noticed that when I hit an arrow, my glitch ran left and right a few times, and spacebar didn't work anymore. I could still highlight things with enter.

Then we had the sound reload (pfft!) and now the arrows work but not spacebar, nor does enter highlight anything when i am near it.

Hope that is helpful, and that you can fix it soon! Very frustrating! :(

ETA: moving from local to group chats seems to make the enter key work again.... not sure if it works every time, but it did work twice.

  • I had the problem about ten minutes into playing - I had to click click click about a dozen times before I could get focus back.  I was coming back from another application.

    (Windows 7, Firefox)

But that was the only time in 30 minutes of play.  It was acting much better, but definitely not perfect.  Thanks for working on this!

  • fwiw.. Since I built my house out (to the max) I have always had problems with my glitch "pausing" as I moved through it - most often when encountering furniture objects (especially cabinets filled with stuff), but also cultivated or placed objects. The cabinets seem to cause very long pauses.  More often moving right to left.. but not always.  Sometimes its the reverse.  I have been back and forth between Firefox and Chrome (current versions) tonight several times (both with the regular link and the new one) but am not seeing much difference.. Possibly the new link is slightly less "laggy".  Up until this point in time, I have thought that this problem might have something to do with how much "stuff" I have in my house so I started selling off furniture items recently in hopes that this would solve the problem, but this doesn't seem to help.  Sorry, forgot to say Windows 7, 32 bit.

  • Mac OS X 10.6.8 using Flash 11.3.300.265, tried on:

Chrome  20.0.1132.57 : I've rarely if ever lost keyboard focus in Chrome but I was having a lot of 'page unresponsive' errors and these stopped completely. Also experienced less dragging while walking and faster loading times. Cool!

Safari 5.1.7 : My keyboard has frozen using Safari before. This time I didn't get much of a chance to test it because I got a wait wheel as soon as I tried to walk. After barely being able to move, I reloaded, spent a few minutes more struggling with it in my house and then returned to world where it froze completely and didn't resolve itself. I needed to force quit to exit.

So for me, Chrome \o/  and Safari /o\

That is better so far, didn't stop for a think a couple of times when walking from front door to end of garden as I usually do!
Will check in somewhere I have not visited for some time, which normally freezes me for a minute or two before the keyboard responds to movement.

  • I was still having the "run to the end of the street" problems.  Quite a few times.  It got worse the longer I played.  (firefox, windows 7)
Posted 5 months ago by Aliera Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I tried this url 3 times, each time I played, I suffered from servere lag and still running to the end of the street. Control Enter always stops that. My main problem was freezing, causing me to have to close down and start again. After 3 times I gave up and went back to the usual url, which was a lot better, still problems but having got used to those I know how to rectify the matter. (Windows Vista IE) I have used firefox on this game but I went back to IE.

  • Thank you so much!  Every time I would leave my Home street for the Real Ur, the first street I would go to would freeze up so much that I couldn't use the keyboard buttons to navigate without more patience than I possess.  It would take 15-30 seconds for my glitch to respond, and then she'd run all the way to the end of the street.  The mouse clicks would work just fine, but I haven't figured out how to climb a ladder with mouse only and I refused to pass up the QQ.  >.>
