A Valuable Tip Before You Unpack Your Moving Boxes

(Thanks to CodeChic for this tip; see also WalruZ's similar thread.)

If you pick up a moving box and have it in your inventory, then the inventory search functionality will search over items in your moving boxes. It is then easier to move all of a certain type of item out of the moving box and into an SDB, for example.

(Inventory search is accessible via the little magnifying glass icon in the bottom left of the viewport; or by pressing the "~/`" key; or by pressing shift+F)

Items in moving boxes will also be available for crafting as well, as long as the box is in your inventory.

  • . I know pretty much what's still in that box, but I can't get it out now without unpacking all of it..

Caley - Have you got stuff like that not in the storage box? As I read it, if you have some corn in your bag, when you chuck that in an SDB, it will take the stuff from your Moving Box too

  • If only I knew it before, now all will be really really easier

  • Too late for me, sorting things in my new house is impossible due to extremely huge lag. :/

    But thanks anyway.

  • I think the boxes should have a fun warning label like Contents Under Pressure, Danger High Volume Box, or Packed by ACME Packing a Division of Glitch.

  • I can't seem to take any of my machines out of the moving box. I can find them via search, but there is no option to drop them (just the "info" link).

I was planning to add a second floor, make SDBs, then put stuff from the moving box into them, but I'm stymied by not being able to get out my machines to make anything.  (I checked the AH, but not all the prerequisites are there.)

Have others been able to take out their heavy machines without exploding the moving boxes?  I guess I could buy parts to make a new machine, but that seems silly. (Maybe I'll check out a community machine room.)

  • The tip does not seem to work with machines.

I can find my metal working machine, but I can't do anything with it. No drop. No use. Nothing. Only option is to open the box and spill everything out.

    Or did I miss something?

  • To get things out of the moving box, I think you need to have the same item in your inventory. You can't have a whole machine in your inventory, so you're stuffed really... I would suggest buying a new machine for now

  • @shexy corin     The problem several hours ago was that even with an identical item  somewhere else in inventory neither search  would list,   nor the SDB deposit trick would wink items from the moving box.
Today I dropped the box... shuffled it into another slot  and managed to get the loam out.  So YAY.. it may be working again....

also posting to sticky this back to the top for people  moving today

  • In regards to this method of unpacking: I tried it and yes, you can get your items from moving box to SDB. HOWEVER once you drop the moving box you may not be able to get the item from SDB to inventory. Mine stacked quite nicely in the SDB but upon removal became invisi-items. The inventory search says they are in my bags, but my bags show empty slots which nothing can be used from.

When I returned the item to the SDB they were all still there, but I want people to know the potential difficulties before they get too excited about this method of unpacking.

  • When I unpacked my boxes, my faded heart which had been in storage, is now on the floor of my new house, with no way to move it.  When clicked, it only gives me info about it.  Is this a bug?

  • If you log out of the game with the moving boxes in your inventory, when you come back, you might not be able to search them. I was able to get the search working again by simply dropping the boxes then picking them back up.

Also, to expand on what Avery[heart] said about invisible items: I unloaded an item from a moving box by searching, then dropping one item from the stack, then picking that one item up. It went into my regular inventory and although I could still find it via search, it was invisible and I couldn't click on the slot it was in. I reloaded and when I looked again it was gone. Search couldn't find it, even after I dropped and re-picked-up the bag it had been in. I recommend finding items, dropping them, and then reloading before picking them up again.

Warning: If you do this with various critter eggs, it's possible you will lose the insta-hatch option on them.

  • Oh I am really bummed that I didn't save a box. ;(. Hey Devs maybe we can have a momento box to commemorate the "big move". Even a smaller version of it. Please.

  • Hmmm, there seems to be some buggy behavior with the moving boxes. I just had a meat collector vanish from existence.

  • I have found a bug with this that causes stuff to disappear:

You pick up a moving box, and you follow this tip to get some of the stuff from the moving box to an SDB.  Now, while you still have the moving box in your inventory, you pick up something that is in your house or on the ground and rather than going into free space in your inventory, it disappears. This seems to happen if your first inventory slot is used for something that can't hold the item you are trying to pick up.  For example, the slot has an element bag and you are trying to pick up a tomato.

Watching the animation for the thing you picked up, it looks like it's being dropped to the left of your first inventory slot, but it's nowhere in the inventory and nowhere in your house. It's not in the moving box you were holding either. It's just gone.

  • @Ginnis possibly the same thing that happened to me last night only it was happening with metal ingots (whenever I picked them up they would fly off screen to the left). I found them later in a moving box that I wasn't holding at the time  the bug happened, but had picked up and moved some time before. So if this is the same bug, your things might be in an unpacked box. *crosses fingers*

  • @PANsy no such luck. I am completely unpacked and have searched everything multiple times because I lost a note from someone, and that was something I really wanted to keep. I lost a few other things that I don't really care about, but the note was unique and I have not been able to find it anywhere.

I posted about it so that maybe others won't lose things in the same way.

  • This isn't working for me this morning; last night I had over 4000 plain bubbles in one of my moving boxes. I didn't move that box out of my inventory, just had to harvest the materials for an SDB. I just went to deposit the bubbles, and it says I only have 429 now (which are the ones in my other bags, I'm guessing.) The moving boxes ones aren't being accessed. Anyone else noticing this?

  • Pii, I don't know if this will work for you but it's been working for me: try dropping the moving box then picking it back up. That seems to get the game to re-register the stuff as being in your inventory.

    Edited to Add:

I have to do this every time I log back into the world after logging out with the moving box in my inventory.

  • That worked! Thanks Sirentist!!!

  • Also, after you do unpack, don't spread hundreds of TP scripts over the attic floor if you are planning to add a second floor.   After I finally finished my second floor I went up there to be greeted by a mess of TP scripts that I'll have to pick up for a second time.   More time spent cleaning instead of playing.

I like to spread  them out in the attic so I can just mouse over them to find the one I want when I want it.  There are too many to store in bags.

  • Just back from a week's vacation during which time the housing reset happened. My pal oscarette directed me to this thread before I sign back in, and now I have a question: almost everything in my old house was in bags, carefully labeled.  When I pick up my moving boxes into my inventory, all that will be inside most of them will be... bags full of stuff.  When I create a bunch of SDBs for storage and drag individual items out of my inventory with boxes also in inventory, will my massive hoards of stuff inside the bags also move, or will I have to drop all the boxes to get the bags, then pick them up one by one to move things out of the bags individually?

    (... hoping that made sense...)

  • Welcome back...I think it will take stuff out of your bags...but since I unpacked all my boxes before seeing this thread, I'm not sure I'm best to ask...though I did put my stuff in bags too...and the 'explosion' wasn't near as bad as the others experienced...I thought I was a pack rat until I saw the hoarders in this game... http://www.glitch.com/forum/general/20799/

Also, if you need to get your machines out of the boxes to make your SDBs, you will be opening that box first anyway...to make it less bad, I opened my front yard boxes and back yard boxes first. Then I dealt with the others in the order of less bad to most bad. For me, I hadn't left much at my old house, so I opened that next. I only had 5 boxes...some had many more...I think the most I saw posted was 8 moving boxes.  Hoping that your move in is fun and full of silliness...

  • Welcome back, Eleanor. fwiw, my advise would be to unpack one box at a time in the backyard. Then pick up the bags and sort into the SDBs. I don't think you can upack a box whilst it is in your inventory. It has to be dropped first and then unpacked, at least that what I did and it worked pretty well, except that I didn't have everything in bags and the explosion was wonderful to behold!

    and what 3beachy said!

  • Blithe, wish I had thought to open them in the back yard...that would have been even better.  Though I will say the organizing of my Glitch house motivated me to do some cleaning and organizing in my RL house...

  • When I have a moving box in my inventory, can I search for the name of a particular bag? (I have a google doc with the names of all my bags and their contents, heh....)
Posted 7 months ago by Eleanor Rigby Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @ 3beachy: I used the glitch move as an excuse to not pay attention to my RL house--heh:)

@ Eleanor: Give it a try. Hope it works.

  • Eleanor I think it should work, it seems to search by name.
