Flickr references Glitch

I noticed this today when I clicked the "Upload Photos & Video" button on my Flickr page. Each time the Uploader screen loads, Flickr randomly rotates loading screen messages. So far, I've found three very Glitchy messages (which is not a surprise, since Flickr was a prior Stoot & Co. endeavor):

Reticulating splines...

Milking butterflies...

Turning it up to 11...

(I know that the last one is more of a Spinal Tap reference, but 11 is a prominent number here.)

  • The Reticulating splines is not originally from Glitch either.

  • might not be the first, but the first time I remember seeing "reticulating splines" was in the first sims game.

  • First time I saw "reticulating splines" was here in Glitch. But it seems like a phrase I ought to see on the wall at a chiropractor's office: "Dr. Rick Crickencrack, reticulating splines since 1989."

  • Reticulating Splines is from the Sims. Or maybe it's just a general computer graphic term?

But yay for Glitch references!! It deserves more references.

  • Reticulating splines goes all the way back to SimCity 2000, actually.  *feels old*  :)

I think it's safe to say milking butterflies is a glitch reference though!

  • Stoot actually started Flickr before Glitch in its current incarnation... so it is sort of like Glitch references Flickr?

(The story I have always heard is that Flickr was actually a weird offshoot of Game Neverending, so maybe it goes deeper than that)

EDIT: just saw dm provided those facts before me, oops!

  • Membril, Flickr actually IS Game Neverending. I believe that Game Neverending ended up transforming into it.

Furthermore, in the 'Snaps' section of Glitch, previously, the Glitch logo would transform into a 'Glitchr' logo.

  • And image sharing in Glitch is Glitchr

  • Actually I went to high school in the 90's and the versions of SimCity we had in our computer labs back then said "reticulating splines" when loading, so it goes back further than 2000. Not sure if it's a computer terminology, is just something the Sims creators coined, and have used ever since in their loading screens. It appears in my current version of Sims 3 as well.

  • OK, guys, straight from Wikipedia:

"SimCity 2000 was the first Sim game to feature the semi-nonsensical phrase "Reticulating Splines", which means to make a network of splines. Will Wright has stated in an interview that the game does not actually reticulate splines when generating terrain, and he just inserted the phrase because it "sounded cool".[citation needed] The phrase has since been featured in SimCopter, SimCity 4, The Sims, The Sims 2, Spore, The Sims 3, The Sims Social and SimCity Social. It is also used in the web-based game Glitch, the popular video game Minecraft (as a title screen splash text), the music service Turntable.fm, the free online education site khanacademy.org, the operating system Ubuntu, the photo-sharing sites Flickr and SnapJoy, the Humble Indie Bundle Android app, when generating certain reports in SEOmoz, and when preparing the game collection analysis in Raptr."
