Vendor Stalls (Please!?)

(Appologies in advance, I'm currently on my phone but felt this needed to be posted asap! I'll add/edit soon)

The auction economy is not perfect. We all know that. The glich economy is still very young. This is both a blessing and a curse. This is why it is important that we plan ahead to ensure that future glitches can thrive all across Ur.

I'd like to see the auction gone, completely. In its place will be player owned vendor stalls.

Similar to homes, a player can only own one stall and they will be represented in market blocks like residential streets.
Stalls won't be bought but merely rented and other players can bid to take an occupied stall once the rental term is expired unless someone (current owner included) bids higher.
Once owned the player can setup their stall which is comprised of a number of upgradeable modules: Cashier, storage, variety, signage, (more?)
The starter stall will have a juju cashier, minimal storage, low quality sign and only sell 1 category of items (selectable)
The item categories should be similar to what the street vendors offer currently.
Stalls could be setup to buy certain items from customers and all prices can be modified by the owner.

In this model, highly sought after locations will cost a ton of currants, probably forcing numerous glitches to pool resources which should mean well stocked stalls. While less desireable locations will lease for a minimal price for players starting out.

(I have more but my battery is low)
Would love to hear your ideas too :)

  • -1  I've played other games that have user market stalls of this type, and I end up never actually using any of them.  I'm not that fond of the current Glitch auction system, but the one thing it's great for is that you have instant access to any item that is currently on sale from anywhere.  You also what the lowest price is, and are able to buy at that price.  Since this isn't a real economy, quality and brand have no meaning, so the only issue is price.  I'd despise having to wander all over Ur looking at prices at different booths, trying to figure out if they had what I need, and whether I was getting ripped off or not.

Maybe a kind of user market system will be useful if we ever get the ability to customize and make furniture and other decorative items for our houses, but right now it seems pointless for the basic resources and tools we have in the economy now.

  • I think I like this idea, but only if we keep an auction-house like feature, telling us where to go to buy the cheapest of any item in our vincinity/the world? Then there would be convenience for those who need cheap things, and also superstores a la Uncle Friendly for people who don't want to go far.

  • Mereret, personally, I like the sound of what you're calling a negative.  I'd actually like wandering all over the place, looking for the best prices.  Maybe stalls in Groddle Heights would have the cheapest ore, and things like that.  They could even add a skill that lets you check prices.

But I don't think Glitch is the game for that kind of system.  It feels like a much more casual game, and so what we have works.  I only wish there were more incentive to buy and sell on the auction house, but hopefully as more things are removed from vendors, that will fix itself.

  • +1 Mereret. I would personally be freaking annoyed if I had to run all over the world just to find something. Auction plus map w/ vendor is good enough for me.

  • I'm fine with the auction house, I just wish it were a little easier to use. If I want to sell a lot of something, it's really a pain to go through the steps of creating a new auction dozens of times. It'd be nice to be able to put up multiple stacks at once, or at least to have the system remember the last auction you put up and let you repeat it.

  • +1, but maybe we could have a minisite for our stalls the way we each have auction pages now, that way those who live far away can still order from exactly who they want? the customer looks through the products you sell, fills out an order form and attaches the money, and then this winds up in your mailbox for you to gather up the supplies and mail them back.

i'm definitely not a big fan of the auction houses or the current street vendors, for that matter. i'd rather buy from other players.

  • I've been doing a couple little experiments with just yelling into the aether, and in works surprisingly well.  Unloaded 40 Hearty Groddle Sammiches in less time than an auction, just by standing next to the Meal vendor in Ilmenskie and shouting at passers-by.  The point is that, it may take a little work, but I think that there are definitely ways of selling outside of the "auction" system that are more social.

  • What Mereret said, I've played other games with player stores and I absolutely hate it, I don't want to waste hours on end trying to look for an item at a decent price and then making sure that I don't get ripped off, it's not fun. The auction house is quicker more organized solution to shopping

  • I hate this idea, i dont want to waste time searching player stalls for items i need at good prices.

  • There's a Supermarket group initiative: http://www.glitch.com/groups/RDOUQG4OJAD2UR0/

Which is a bit of both worlds. It adds social + instantness (lolwut?!)
The group is still small, so the latter still needs to be developed.

Personally I like the auction and wouldn't want to see it go. I wouldn't mind if vendor stalls became something extra though.

    I agree.

  • I thought I saw something in a previous post about a player's market where people could all sell their wares from one area.
I don't know if that would eliminate the need for auction or not, but it sounds like fun.  I hope to see the market someday.

  • I like the auctions for convience and it is easy to compare prices to get the best deal. I rather leave it as is.

  • -1  The auction house is awesome and convenient. Fun to browse too. I cannot imagine a game day without it. Now, I totally understand how vendor stalls/supermarkets groups would be a great extra/alternative, for those who are interested, I suppose. The game itself is busy enough - why complicate things when it's not necessary?
In other words: Leave the auctions alone! >:DD

  • -1 for a couple reasons:

This might encourage players to make multiple accounts and bid on all the lots of the most desirable location from a pool of money. If that happens, then only the rich would be able to afford the highly sought-after locations, allowing them to overprice as they please. This is assuming that the highly sought-after locations are more convenient, which would be the only way they would be more "sought-after". I dislike this idea mainly in the way it is proposed.

Although it may be convenient to receive items immediately after you buy them, it doesn't make up for the potential "area control" that inconveniences everyone as well as the overall inconvenience of having to spend time to go to the market blocks just to check the current prices as opposed to seeing them directly from the auctions page.

You say that it is important to plan ahead to ensure that future glitches can thrive all across Ur. I fail to see how any part of this plan is friendly towards newer players especially when they can fall victim to potential overpricing as well as an increased competition to sell their own goods. Any richer player wanting a spot that a newer player found is able to simply bid higher than the newer player repeatedly to get that spot. Even if the bidding system wasn't there, we could potentially have people that could hog spots and attempt to "sell" them to make extra money.

While I do agree with the auction economy not being perfect (as everything generally deflates over time), I don't think it's necessary to implement vendor stalls as a replacement. I would prefer if this was implemented as an alternative somehow. But if a better plan for the future would be needed, this is not the way to do it because many of the weak points cannot be covered in this plan.

  • The whole theory of capitalism rests on the assumption that everyone in the market has the same information (about labor, raw materials, demand, etc).  The auction does a pretty good job of making sure that you know exactly the same information as everyone else when you start producing and selling items.

This proposal would make information almost impossible to get, and lead to imbalances that would be almost impossible to correct.

    No thanks.
