To whomever took all my street creator trophy pieces and left me 1 butterfly: I am a sad Glitch now D'8

So I just rejoined Glitch after a 2 month hiatus while the new changes were happening.

I read many forum posts about the changes, and they looked very cool, so I came back to try them out for myself.

After exploding my giant moving box all over my floor, I set about once again reorganizing all my stuff into little piles all over the place to make managing the reduction in size from a 3-floor mansion to a starter home manageable.

One thing I did not understand, is how public your home street is.  I read about the signposts, and how to transport from one home street to another by adding friends.  Given that I didn't have anybody on there yet, I assumed no one could find my street.  So I set about using the loooong street I had dumped all my iMG into, as a second storage and reorganizing area while I gathered the skills and mats to expand the floors of my house, intending to put everything back in my house once huge-ified, before adding my friends to the signpost and being a social glitch once again.

I now know this is untrue, because when I logged in this morning, someone had 'visited' me, and took a huge chunk of my belongings, most importantly (to me) ALL my "Street Creator" trophy parts.

I don't care about the other stuff, I have a zillion currants and can buy back whatever else over time.  But those trophies took a huge amount of effort to watch for streets under construction, gather all the mats, fight 2000 other glitches for a spot at the Project sign, and contribute huge amounts to.

Now I have none.  It's my fault, and maybe everyone else who played around the conversions but me realized streets are now accessible by your profile, but for the other people who have been out of game for a while, it might be a good idea to add something to the 'welcome back' messages to this effect.

If you took my stuff, I want you to know it wasn't intentionally left out in a public space, and I'd really appreciate it if you would return it!  Although I don't blame you for understanding the rules which I now see are pretty clear about it in other forum posts.

Thanks for the butterfly, but I would like my Street Creator Trophy pieces back =)

  • Hey, Kelti, no one asked you what you do with your home street either. You just came in here guns blazing.

  • Wow, is Civility dead in our Glitchian world (in certain circumstances) as it is in the Other world?  Sprockett, your response is exceedingly mature and heartfelt and I for one applaud it and admire you greatly. Yes, you're sad about losing your hard-earned trophies, as you have every right to be, but you never uttered one word in bitterness or hatred or blame. Instead you even acknowledge a part in this. Should such a terrible thing happen to me in Ur or out of it, I hope I'd be able to deal with it as well as you have.

Just wanted to beg all at TS for the return of street building projects. I've watched the Youtube videos of some projects and boy they were amazing :) Sadly they ended before I started playing actively. So yes, Please please, please, please (x infinity) bring those back. The camaraderie I've read about and seen in the videos during these street building projects are something i dream about for this sad broken world (the Other world that is). Thanks though to the entire TS team for this incredible world (Ur), community and experience. Cheers & *hugs* all Glitchen :D

  • Kelti: Um.  Okay.  So.  I used my own street experience as an example of the public and private options the /home system gives.  I don't think that was clear, so if that wasn't, I apologize.  Clarifying this here.

If you continue to feel the need to hijack a thread under a vague disguise of 'hearing this attitude from just about everyone' just to single out only my response, please just send it to me a message.

  • Maybe you should've kept you stuff INSIDE your home. I'm sick of people complaining about this.

  • Wow daniel, did you actually read his OP?

  • Sorry to hear that Sprockett!

While it's unlikely that the person who took them will return them (if for no other reason than they probably won't see this post), it shows the best spirit of Glitch that several people have offered to give you some of their pieces.

  • I agree with everyone who's pointed out the true-to-reality layered security of Street-in-front-of-your-house (yours to modify, but publicly accessible), House and Backyard (accessible only to people to whom you give keys, or who you invite to accompany you), and Cabinets (only open-able by you). That seems like a sensible system and I think the demands to be able to turn one's Street/front yard into an additional secure storage space are a bit silly.

It's kind of surprising, though, that trophies or parts of trophies can be taken at all? ISTR one of the devs talking about certain starter furniture items being "soul-locked", so that they could not be sold, stolen, traded or given away - I'd have assumed that trophies would be in the same bracket.
Posted 7 months ago by Batsgirl Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Batsgirl, I bet those ones are tradeable because people might want to swap which ones they have.

Sprockett, I'm sorry that happened to you! You seem like a gracious and reasonable person. I'm sure things will come back around :)

  • Cabinets are accessible to keyholders

  • I'm not sure about on public streets, but kevbob confirmed that trophies are safe on shelves even though other things are not.  I doubt that would apply to street trophy _pieces_ though, which is not a complete actual trophy.

I'm basing that on the fact that after the Last Big Reset, my Rock Street Creator trophy came with me, but the zillions of street trophy pieces I'd collected but never got the final piece for did not.  The trophy itself is probably soulbound, the pieces that make up a trophy likely not.

  • Sprockett, I hate that someone stole your trophies! That is low. I wish that there was some way the thief could be traces and made to return them!

I see that once again, a thread has turned into a platform to complain about the changes in this game. Personally, I love the changes, but that is irrelevent at this point.

Essentially, the mechanics of the game have not changed. Before the reset, we had private homes on blocks that were publically accessible. I would often go to blocks I did not live on to mine or harvest trees. Now, we have private homes on Home Streets which are publically accessible. Same system, different layout.

TS has done an amazing job of making those streets user controlled, by locking down feeders, milkers, collectors, and only allowing keyholders to poison trees. This is actually better than the old system. The old way, I would have NEVER put a meat collector on my block, and trees were poisonable by anyone. I see it as an improvement.

Personally, I think it is awesome to play a game in which the developers actually listen to the players and make changes based on their issues, as in the case of the recent lockdown of feeders and trees. Other knline games I've played are not always that way.

Just my opinion, though, for the $0.02 it's worth.

  • To me the whole discussion around this issue proves that TS has dropped the ball regarding item security.  If a gamer cannot tell what the fate of an object is going to be in a certain context, and cannot tell what security level a certain context belongs to while in the game or by accessing an obvious Help or Properties function, then the game is what is broken.  If you have to sort through the forums and blogs to know what items are soul locked or regular locked or can be taken or used by friends or keyholders or anybody, the system is too complicated and too unclear, especially since these things have still been being adjusted on a fairly regular basis.  This is a place where beta testing indicates that TS needs to make the security information of a specific object in its current context available through visual cues or as part of the information menus of the object and/or the location.

  • "I think Tiny Speck would do better by its customers to offer privacy for a fee."

That's the worst idea about anything on the internet, ever!

  • I stopped reading the rant (not the OP) when she said Glitch has the worst community ever.

I would, however, welcome a bit of whatever she's smoking that enables her to think Glitchen are ruder than Wowbies.

  • Mereret: That is spot on what the issue is.
Posted 7 months ago by Sketch Book Subscriber! | Permalink
  • +1 Mereret.   OP, my condolences.

Much of the follow-on disagreement comes from the vague meaning of the terms "My Street" and "Your Street."

In real life I live on Maple street.   When I turn the corner and approach home, I might very well say to a passenger  "This is my street" or "Here's my street."   Obviously this does not mean that all of Maple street belongs to me, even if my house is the only one on the street.  Saying "this is my street" is a figure of speech, and everyone understands it as such.

Therefore, I don't believe that when Tiny Speck displays a dialog that says "this is your street" or "you are entering your home street", etc, they mean to say that that real estate completely belongs to you.  What they're saying as that this is the street your house is on.   While it is true that you can expand the street, change it's appearance and add certain types of resources to it, trying to build a fence at either end and claiming that real estate as exclusively yours is presumptive.  Doing so is an attempt to transform a vague figure of speech into hard and fast property rights.   Good luck with that.

  • +1 Coley.  There was never any 'privacy' on the /home street; I am super confused by how many people are acting indignant, as if something was taken away from them with this most recent reset.  It's now easier for random strangers to come wandering through one's street, but the only thing different is that they don't have to add you to their friend list and their signpost to do so (without any confirmation on your part, either).  The streets have always been public.

Also +1000, Mereret.  Even just some sort of subtitle dialog when you mouse over the 'drop' option on an item in your inventory, stating '[item] is locked only to you/keyholders/isn't locked' would be awesome.
Posted 7 months ago by Classical Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Walruz, I disagree with your statement.  If I was the only house on my street, it would indeed be my street.  My street does not have other homes on it, just mine.  This /home streets in this game only exist because that specific player exists.

Due to all of those circumstances, I am led to see each street as being owned by the homeowner of that street.  They are the only house there, it is only there because that person has an account. Its truly their street.

  • I'm sorry for your loss, Sprockett and hope that you recover the missing trophy pieces!

I too misunderstood the "home street" system and did exactly the same thing, piling stuff outside and then organizing appropriate resource piles around the cute machines to make working on them more efficient.

When I logged in the next day and ran down my street I noticed that the names on some of my bags had changed. My green "Peat" bag was now a green "Paul" bag and various other small, witty changes to others, but lucky for me, nothing was missing.

I am incredibly thankful that the person who gently brought the actual street mechanics to my attention went about it that way, rather than eyeing my street like a flash flea market.

  • @WalruZ, that could quite possibly be the best explanation of the 'your street' description I've heard.  I never looked at it that way.  Thank you : )

  • ), not to mention that it also seems to be consistent with how the Glitch user experience of these home streets is evolving. It will be of enormous assistance if TS would begin to refer to our home streets in a way that helps support our expectations about how these streets operate and how other Glitchen are permitted to interact with objects we place (and most importantly) /are permitted to place on these streets. It is not helpful when we click on the link to a Player's home street from their profile page that the description says that their home street is owned by them. Ownership carries with it certain expectations. If I own the street, I would expect to control access and activities. Don't misunderstand me: I don't want to own the street. I want it to be public, which, in fact it is. It isn't owned by me. The descriptor shouldn't insist that it is.

  • Kelti's garden plots are need of repair right now. Perhaps she would understand more about the spirit of the game if people showed up to fix them for her. I contributed a bunch of material already, perhaps other creepy and invasive people will stop by to help her out.
Posted 7 months ago by Elyn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Actually I wish you hadn't done that, because I wanted to remove the herb plots. Now I can't because they have to be rebuilt first, wasting resources.
Posted 7 months ago by Kelti Subscriber! | Permalink
  • ...Or you can just pour Wine of the Dead to rid of them instantly. Very handy, no waiting or rebuilding.
Posted 7 months ago by Maruchan Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Maruchan - They were half rebuilt before I even touched them so she is obviously just trying to advance her complaint.
Posted 7 months ago by Elyn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Wine of the dead doesn't work on projects in progress, and both plots had been contributed to when I logged on this morning. They were close to 0% last night and had herbs growing in them last night, so obviously someone harvested the herbs when I was asleep and the plots "died". I was actually hoping to try and see if leaving one herb spot growing would prevent the plot from "dying", but that got messed up by whoever did the harvesting.

  • Shoot has answered this in another thread @kelti : We are working on reducing the cost of restoration projects and simplifying the requirements somewhat. We are also adding iMG rewards for project completion and are considering a player suggestion that would have cultivated items "level up" a bit each time they are restored. Still a work in progress!

In the meantime, we might make it so that WotD works on item when the project has already started.

  • Kelti you may want to consider leaving a note or gnome near the resource explaining what you are trying to do.
Posted 7 months ago by Axa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @WalruZ and others.  Yes, the game is highly populated by English speaking people from the US, Canada and Europe.  However, I can't even guarantee that your cultural assumption about the meaning of "your" street applies to all those people.  For most folks living in major urban and suburban areas, it works, but not necessarily everywhere.  I know for certain that it does not apply to other cultural contexts, where "Mereret's Town" could mean that yes, I really do control the town, am the boss of most of the people living there, and no one had better build or change anything without consulting with me, or they can expect fines or goons to become involved.  And yes, people living in countries with these kinds of communities have internet access too, though who knows if any would end up playing Glitch.  Still, as a global community, on the Internet these sorts of limited cultural understandings must be spelled out for the sake of removing exactly the kind of confusion we are seeing in this situation.

  • Wow... I travel for a few days and can't read the forums extensively and look what happens... Sprockett, I am very sorry for your loss, as I know how hard those trophy pieces were to obtain (and they are now impossible to obtain). However, I am a bit confuddled because the idea of picking up my moving boxes inside my house and moving them outside my house never even crossed my mind. I see that you have a good, humble, "lesson-learned" attitude about it, however, so I have no qualms toward you.

In regards to the other point that is receiving so much attention here: I would think of our home streets like I would my own front yard, in a world where I don't mind people coming by and picking oranges off my orange tree (hey, it's a renewable resource and there are more than I could ever eat myself). In the real world, I would never put anything in my front yard that I'm afraid someone will steal. The one time I put something irresistibly stealable in my front yard (really the porch of my apartment: it was a futon mattress), I did it on purpose because I was trying to get rid of it. I didn't even leave a note saying that someone should take it.... by the time I woke up the next morning it was gone. I was a bit disappointed in human nature after that event, but not surprised. DON'T LEAVE ANYTHING YOU CARE ABOUT IN YOUR FRONT YARD!.

I don't think Glitch should change the way it is. It already mirrors real life to an extent, only with more cooperation and sharing, which is a good thing.
