what kind of housing would you like to imagine yourself into?

I found the 50k houses a little uninteresting for me so I settled for one in the bogs - though I'm not really attracted to that sort of dark environment.

I've always liked the art of William Heath Robinson.   http://www.google.ca/search?rlz=1C1AVSA_enCA433CA433&gcx=c&q=william+heath+robinson&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi&biw=1342&bih=625  Love to collect those posters.

I also like some of the steampunk envirnoments in secondlife.  Exploring industustrial wastelands is also fun - both in real life and in games.

some of these "places" are cool:

I would love to have a house  in the world of Amy Casey

Since we live inside the Giants, why not visualize our neighborhoods  as part of their dna or their internal organs?

What else?  people have mentioned water environments.  Maybe underwater caves or something?

  • I like opulence. Give me a French chateau or an Ottoman palace. Just generally getting some more diverse locations and housing styles resembling world cultures would be cool. Maybe some Japanese style homes, some adobe style, etc. It would also be cool to have 30k and 50k homes in every zone, in the style of that zone. A multi-story cottage in Groddle Meadow, an expansive tree-house in Groddle Forest, etc. (Plus lower-cost homes in Alakol, Salatu, etc.)

  • I'd love to live in an M.C. Escher style house. With staircases that don't actually lead anywhere, but look like they should do.  Everything looking "normal" at a glance, but look closer and it's anything but.  Just everything not being quite as it seems :) That would appeal to me greatly :D

  • I'm rooting for the 100,000c mansion, with a basement that has the dark, boggy stuff in it, and a yard with a pen and patches for trees, and tables that are actually platforms that we can drop decorative things on (like flowers or firefly jars).  I also think that there should be wealthy and poor neighborhoods in every region.

  • sid:  I agree about the need for more affordable housing in Alakol.   I like to mine there and I like the general environment/art of the place.  Wasn't too keen on the houses but I see lots of people fancy them so that's all good.    Maybe some bunk houses for the miners?   A tent city might be going a bit too far ;-)  might offend the locals.  I also agree about having areas with more 30k and 50k homes.   And I'm not just talking   a few expensive places and a lot of cheap places in one area.  No, I mean  places where expensive dominates and cheap is accommodated.

Ebil: Me too!  staircases to nowhere would be awesome!

Jewel: 100k homes would be great for people when they are approaching level 60 and feel they have nothing left to channel their aspirations into.  For myself, I'm not a fan of big places that dominate a region or neighborhood but I'm sure they could be worked in so they appear more understated.    I like having the top floor in an apartment in the bogs - partly because I don't really like the bogs (I actually had a nightmare last night about living in a cold dark swampy area, I woke up with a headache and thought I was back in Vancouver), so I like being high up in the air on the top floor.  I like that the other apartments are really not that much smaller or that much cheaper - 7k vs 10.  Still I like being on the top, in the penthouse, as it were.. :)

If you like really big homes you could also visit secondlife where there is a lot of that sort of thing.  You can even buy (with real money) your own island.    I like to go there sometimes to see what people are creating and/or aspiring toward.    I'd have played it more if it were a little more simple and had some structured activities like Glitch does.   Open Sim is another site where I hear that a lot of former SL creators have gone to.  Never tried it myself.

  • A particular favorite from the imagination of WHR.   I love the way he thought of fun and creative uses for what were, in his day, "new" technology.

  • @Treesa - Urbex is awesome, no question. I mostly hope that, like Jewel said, there are bigger houses once people start nearing higher levels. I was talking about that with somebody this test, actually- I want a house the size of Siuruan Untold with various extra storage and crop capabilities (though I think I'd suggested 500K at the time).

I don't know that giant houses would dominate a region- most of the house aside from the front is offscreen unless you're inside it, and really, there are loads of places that are pretty out-of-the-way where stuff like that could be put (with more regions to follow). I guess the concern for larger houses I have is, as always, being able to get them at higher levels so the game can continue to scale... I think getting stuck with one design, in limited locales (full disclosure: I'm a bog fan) is gonna be a problem the longer people play, and they're going to want alternatives.

  •  Hmm.
A Tregloo.  (An igloo made of living trees). Preferably close to Ix.

... Can I have this? PLEASE?

I know we have beehive-shaped houses in GF.. but this is slightly different.

  • my perfect glitch home is smallish, like a GF treehouse, but has a good storage cabinet and a big yard with an animal pen and lot of garden space and shady areas for growing herbs .

i prefer a tasteful subdued decor. i'd pay alakol prices (or more) for a house like that, and if i could grow mushrooms...

given my choices, i will settle for a 15k estevan meadows home.

  • My preference would be a "fantasy-ized" Victorian with the room and amenities of a 50K Alakol, and a couple pots for herbs.  Since it is a Victorian, there is a rationale for a "root cellar" with a dark patch as well.

Kind of like the house my Great Grandmother lived in in small town Iowa 30 years ago.

  • +1 for opulence.   And particularly more color in the upper grade of houses.  There was a previous thread where it was suggested that styles from history be incorporated.  That would be marvelous, whether it's styles from Earth history, or from the previous ages of Ur that were hinted about in previous tests.

    +1 for neo-Victorian and Steampunk

+1 for Escher.  And maybe Dali while they're at it.

At the moment I'm saving for a 15K Groddle Meadow cottage style home.  I like the fact that they have a decent set of resources and storage in a house that feels homey and has a decent view.  I may not bother with an Alakol house this time, because the only thing I really liked was the balconies.

  • I want to get a giant cave house, like they have now  in the savannah lands. I want to put chandeliers in it and carpets. Years (decades) ago there was a Lost in Space episode where the girl in the Robinson family meets a boy who lives in a cave full of strange lost items. I want to live in a cave decorated like that.

  • when I played in secondlife there were lots of people who had skyboxes.  I visited one person's box who had it all decked out like a cave or dungeon.  I thought that was kind of funny - to want to imagine oneself in a dungeon in the sky.

Of course when you think about it, the sky can be a metaphor for the un fullfilled imagination so in a way it makes sense.   I wasn't particularly fond of skyboxes myself.   I found them difficult to locate and too much out of context to their environment.   But to each his own.

I went and logged into sl yesterday and its as vast and empty as ever.   Most of my former sl friends didn't appear to have logged on in years (or hadn't changed their profile in years).   I don't mind exploring empty places but it really was a bit dull compared to glitch.    I decided to go visit IMVU instead.  I hear that sl and IMVU had about the same  number of users (or maybe it was subscriptions) in and around 2008.   Since then, IMVU has grown to be huge.   Its so much easier to use than Secondlife.   Its not the same thing as SL of course, but it appears to appeal to people for the same reasons.  People like to have a personalized room/space where they can customize the decor dress up their avatar and invite friends.  Far as I can tell there is not much to explore, except for the other rooms.  The things I saw for sale, that you could buy with real money - they weren't particularly imaginative and I'd seen most of that stuff in secondlife.

  • Housing in Ix, Uralia, and/or the Deeps would be fabulous. Also, houses with both herb and veggie crops.

  • i'm not sure about the style of house i'd like to live in (other than a giant bog house!) but i'd love to settle into a neighbourhood that's something like Tableau in SL.

  • I would imagine myself in a boat house it could be land locked and washed up on shore by some historic wave of long ago legend but there are several pirate groups in glitch that need ships to live in hehe
