Project: Vector Art is A Pain in the Glitch!

So over the past couple of weeks I've come to realise how much I want my Glitch in a huge, monster, city-destroying size to use for printing and as my desktop background.. The ones you get through the API and on the profile is just not big enough to fit my desires, and after looking everywhere I've decided..

I'm going to create him, from Scratch! [with add of the image as a stencil ;D]
I'm updating this thread as I progress, and by the end, I'll have a Vector, infinitely large Glitch! :D

  • Ha, yes it is :)

It's not the vector shapes and gradients that will be difficult so much as the nuances in pattern (the fabric-y feel of our Glitchen skin, some details in certain clothing pieces); I believe that these make use of raster patterns, but with some clever work, I'm sure you can make vector versions.

    Best of luck!

  • On Zooming in a bit on some SWF version of the characters, the Skin appears to be made out of vectors not rasters which really surprised me a lot.. I think it's just made up of the 'transparent tiling' and some radial gradients with a peachy colour..

I think the phrase that goes with this is: "Please, Don't look at me.. I feel.. so.. Ugly!"

  • You guys crack me up. But okay I will spill the beans for you.
Step 1: Get Firebug, Flashbug, and Trillix Flash Decompiler version 5.
Yes it must be version 5 because the binary function is new in that version
Step 2: Open up your beautiful character in the wardrobe with Flashbug open.
Step 3: Download the swf files listed in the Flash decompiler tab.
Step 4: Open the swf files in Trillix and check all the binary files and select extract objects in the ribbon.
Step 5: Rename the .bin files to .swf
Step 6: Open the renamed .swf files in Trillix and voila!

I already extracted all the objects for my character but I can't be fucked to piece them together right now.

Now how to extract the background objects?

  • My Glitch so far... http://i40.tinypic.com/egwh9w.png
The nakedness is not on purpose ;)

And I'm not sure decompiling is actually allowed, and if it was, I still wouldn't use it - I think it's better for me, as an artist, to draw my own.. helps me with my Skill :)

  • Fine, do it the hard way.

  • I did it in just a few seconds with Paint Shop Pro X4.  It can be done in most paint programs without all that trouble.  It took me longer to get it on Flickr.  I cropped the face, resized to 350 and used "One Step Noise removal".

  • That still keeps it in raster form, I'm recreating mine in vector which means I can make it as big as the Glitchiverse and it wouldn't fuzz or lose it's quality! :D So far I've finished and dusted my one (completed it last night) and it makes a good desktop background! http://i52.tinypic.com/f3rhnp.jpg
