can we just settle this. family game or not?

i can't really find an official definition for what a family game is or not, but i mean, it's essentially the same as a 'family film' in regards to the use of language. so, while 'family game' doesn't have an objective definition (yet), 'family film' does. it's "a film genre that is designed to appeal to a variety of age groups and, thus, families." i think we all agree that the game appeals to many age groups. i suppose we could also agree that the game is PG-13 considering that a player must be 13 years or older to play (with parental consent). films typically are upgraded to PG-13 from PG when language is used sparingly (generally, less than 4 times) or the movie is especially violent. note that Glitch never uses language and is never violent, so the game really should be PG or even G. Certainly, it would be rated E for everyone with a disclaimer that they cannot control the content experienced online.

ultimately though, the game has parallels with a family film that's rated PG-13. and as such, we shouldn't use language.

thank you for your time.

(edit: ToS says 14 years or older, so I guess PG-14 would be more accurate.)

  • YoYo Mama,
Yes. It is very possible that there is someone who plays this game right now who is possibly from a completely upside down culture that openly uses foul language in public. But, I would bank on it, that most of us playing this game come from an upbringing in a society that says 'do not use foul language in public.' Whether or not your parents raised you that way. Whether or not it makes sense. It's probably proper etiquette where most of us come from.

The words themselves are gray area. Jackoff may be bad to someone but not to another. Same with ass, or whatever else. Personally, I avoid them except for when going for effect. But Jackoff is pretty gray and I used it for effect.

Seriously, where are you from that you dont encounter this?  Where I live there is an entire culture where they greet each other with "Sup Nigga!"  "Yo Bitch!"  So please, please tell me.....where is this that you live that you dont ever encounter this?  And it isnt just where I live that this happens.  For, I am in Fort Worth, Texas. And if it's here, it has to be pretty much everywhere.

""I love words. I thank you for hearing my words. I want to tell you something about words that I uh, I think is important. I love..as I say, they're my work, they're my play, they're my passion. Words are all we have really. We have thoughts, but thoughts are fluid. You know, [humming]. And, then we assign a word to a thought, [clicks tongue]. And we're stuck with that word for that thought. So be careful with words. I like to think, yeah, the same words that hurt can heal. It's a matter of how you pick them. There are some people that aren't into all the words. There are some people who would have you not use certain words. Yeah, there are 400,000 words in the English language, and there are seven of them that you can't say on television. What a ratio that is. 399,993 to seven. They must really be bad. They'd have to be outrageous, to be separated from a group that large. All of you over here, you seven. Bad words. That's what they told us they were, remember? 'That's a bad word.' 'Awwww.' There are no bad words. Bad thoughts. Bad Intentions."

  • "And words, you know the seven don't you? Shit, Piss, Fuck, Cunt, Cocksucker, Motherfucker, and Tits, huh? Those are the heavy seven. Those are the ones that will infect your soul, curve your spine and keep the country from winning the war.Shit, Piss, Fuck, Cunt, Cocksucker, Motherfucker, and Tits, wow. Tits doesn't even belong on the list, you know. It's such a friendly sounding word. It sounds like a nickname. 'Hey, Tits, come here. Tits, meet Toots, Toots, Tits, Tits, Toots.' It sounds like a snack doesn't it? Yes, I know, it is, right. But I don't mean the sexist snack, I mean, New Nabisco Tits. The new Cheese Tits, and Corn Tits and Pizza Tits, Sesame Tits Onion Tits, Tater Tits, Yeah. Betcha can't eat just one. That's true I usually switch off . But I mean that word does not belong on the list.Actually, none of the words belong on the list, but you can understand why some of them are there. I am not completely insensitive to people's feelings. You know, I can dig why some of those words got on the list...like cocksucker and motherfucker. Those are...those are heavy-weight words. There's a lot going on there, man. Besides the literal translation and the emotional feeling. They're just busy words. There's a lot of syllables to contend with. And those K's. Those are aggressive sounds, they jump out at you. CocksuckerMotherfuckerCocksucker . It's like an assault, on you. So I can dig that."

  • "And we mentioned shit earlier, of course. Two of the other 4-letter Anglo-Saxon words are Piss and Cunt, which go together of course. But forget about that. A little accidental humor there. Piss and Cunt. The reason Piss and Cunt are on the list is that a long time ago certain ladies said 'Those are the two I am not going to say. I don't mind Fuck and Shit, but P and C are out. P and C are out.' Which led to such stupid sentences as 'OK, you fuckers, I am going to tinkle now.'And of course the word Fuck. The word Fuck, I don't really...well, this is some more accidental humor, but I don't really want to get into that now. Because I think it takes too long. But I do mean that. I mean, I think the word fuck is an important word. It's the beginning of life, and, yet it's a word we use to hurt one other, quite often. And uh, people much wiser than I have said, I'd rather have my son watch a film with two people making love than two people trying to kill one other. And I of course agree. I wish I know who said it first, and I agree with that. But I would like to take it a step further. I would like to substitute the word fuck, for the word kill in all those movie cliches we grew up with. 'Okay Sheriff, we're gonna fuck ya now. But we're gonna fuck ya slow.' So maybe next year I'll have a whole fuckin' rap on that word. I hope so."

  • Innie, (now don't take this as a serious comment; I'm just having fun playing with people's words) I, for one, live in a tiny village in the north of England that is like a time warp back to the 1940's, and, believe me, the words "Sup Nigga!"  and "Yo Bitch!" have never been heard on the streets of Cowshill, County Durham!

  • "Uh, there are two-way words, but those are the seven you can never say on television. Under any circumstances you just can not say them ever, ever ever, not even clinically. You can not weave them in the panel with Doc and Ed and Johnny, I mean it's just impossible, forget those seven, they're out. But, there are some two-way words. There are double-meaning words. Remember the ones your giggled at in sixth grade? 'And the cock crowed three times.''Hey, the cock the cock crowed three times. It's in the bible.' There are some Two-way words, like it's okay for Curt Gowdy to say 'Roberto Clemente has two balls on him.' But he can't say, 'I think he hurt his balls on that play Tony, don't you? He's holding them. He must have hurt them by God.' And the other two-way word that goes with that one is prick. It's okay if it happens to your finger. Yes, you can prick your finger, but don't finger your prick. No, no."

  • Speaking of "tits" being one of the no-no words.  I suspect most of you gentle readers are not aware that the birds called chickadees in the States are called tits in the UK.  Not only that, but there are several members of the tit family and the largest of them, Parus major, carries the common name of great tit.  Can you imagine the joy ten-year-old English school boys have announcing to their buddies, "I saw a pair of great tits on my way to school this morning!"

  • YoYo, regarding the use of "fanny" in England - quite a naughty word here...  Excuse me but I have to go into some detail to tell this story.  Though I now live in England I was born, raised and lived most of my life in the States.  Seven years ago I retired (a bit early, so as not entirely to give away my horribly advanced years) and my wife (who is English but who had lived the last 40 years in the States) and I moved to France.  While there we acquired an orphan puppy who showed up on our doorstep one rainy February night.  When my wife left England in the 60's Fanny was just a girl's name and nothing more, and that's what we named the puppy.  Five years ago my wife and I and Fanny moved from France to England and only then discovered that "fanny" had taken on an entirely new meaning.  So in our tiny 1940's village where never is uttered a "Sup Nigga!" nor a "Yo Bitch!" we are definitely the only household with a dog named Vagina!

  • Dear Dawgg,

If you reread my post, I am sure that you will realize that I did not use either the words "bored" or "entertain".  As for marching band, my daughter was First French Horn at her own high school and In State.. so I don't consider someone being in "marching band" an insult in any way.. thank you :).  Apparently I was recently misinformed as to your relationship with TS and I apologize for disseminating inaccurate information.   If you feel mocked, then that is your problem.  It certainly doesn't matter to me, though it is rather sad really.. to me you are only a tin soldier.

Regarding the post you so conveniently linked to and in case you missed my final post..  (And wow! I'm so gratified that you remember.. do you keep a log?)  the last of it, and most mollifying to me, was the following::

"Princess Fi, I don't assume you meant to do this (I bet you intended to do good), but the next time you "hope someone at TS is reading and will do something", it might be better to go directly to them instead of creating a post to rally the troops against an individual.
Posted 70 days ago by imbri

Imbri, you are correct.. I did not intend this.  Yes, I was offended by the behavior.  I do not know how to contact anyone directly.  I did not want to respond within the original post because I did not want to feed into it.  Instead, I feel like I created a monster.  I look forward to the time when TS updates the organization of the Forums as, if there were Mods, I would have expressed my feelings privately to whichever one might have been in place.  We don't have that option right now.
I don't know Mr. Dawgg or Windborn (neither is in my friends list).  I should have given my feelings a cool down period.. or just typed something in notepad (what I do instead of sending an email I might later regret {smile's ruefully}).  That being said, my feelings about maintaining a courteous social environment remain unchanged.  The above trail of comments mostly just makes me sad as I don't understand why it is that anyone thinks it is ok to call people names.

Posted 70 days ago by Princess Fi

If I agree with anyone here, it's imbri: this thread itself is inappropriate (sorry Princess Fi!) simply because two wrongs don't make a right and starting a thread to chasten another player is at least as "wrong" as calling another player a name. We do read (almost) everything and will take appropriate action when we think it is necessary. As a general rule, we're not going to jump into every minor squabble.
Mr. Dawgg — I understand your point (and there's nothing wrong with "thanks, but I'll write my own idea suggestions however I want"), but I think you know you'll make that point more effectively by just leaving out the "jackoff" bit and avoid all this hullabaloo.
And with that … thread closed!

I feel I was sufficiently chastened by Stewart's remarks when he closed that thread.  At that point in time, I had almost no experience with forums.  I can apologize once again for calling you out inappropriately, however that does not change one whit my opinion of you as far as the person you appear to be, from then until now, as concerns your innumerable narcissictic ramblings.

Guess I got sucked in one more time.. ugh..  Game day can't come soon enough :)

  • THREAD RECAP:

First Dawgg got on a high horse.
    Then the horse died.
    Now everyone is beating it.
Rigor mortis set in and people got hurt beating it.
Now the horse is starting to decompose and stink.
The stink is drawing in trolls.
Effectively, the thread has become troll bait.

All posts are now necrotic in nature, trying to bring that horse back to life so they can hit it again.

It's so bad, people are making personal status changes to remark how awful this thread now is. Which draws more attention back to what should have been a relatively non-volatile thread.

The only clear winner is Dawgg, who has turned a trivial debating issue into the hottest thread on Glitch forums. Congratulations Dawgg. Your prize - Lots of people hating you in the game.

The question on everyone's mind? Is it worth it? The forum is not a vacuum and you certainly can expect non-moderated places to have random acts of vulgarity thrown at you, if for no other reason than people being people. Was this considered in the composition of your many long posts that kept people coming back for more?

In fact, this thread has caused the expletive word count to go way up. So that's kind of the opposite effect called for in the beginning.

I imagine there is some psychology buried in that.

  • there's an italian proverb that translates roughly to "if three people call you an ass, put on a saddle."

the mocking only started when reasoning became completely futile and we realized that no mater what facts you were presented with, you were going to firmly hold your outrageous belief AND argue it as long as anyone kept answering.

that second thing alone makes you emminently mockable. and not just mockable, but it makes you supremely entertaining. if we're bored because nobody has said anything worthy of scream of laughter, all we have to do is post to this thread and you will provide us with more and more wrong headed and self-contradictory gems.

    it really is magic.

and when people tell you you only reason the thread still exists is our our amusement, you treat it as is we are still open to your weird and false claims.

it was a courtesy to tell you that if you keep talking, we will keep laughing, but something in you just won't allow you to let it go as long as you haven't had the last word, so now it's not only entertainment, but you are a new sort of lab rat.

i've taken the opportunity to read many of the things you've written in other threads and concluded that not only is your reasoning unsound, but that you are a hypocrite as well, hiding behind "family game" simply to define and demand what YOU want to see regardless of your own words or behavior and you are so wrong on so many levels that you are the floor show in a weird cabaret.

so keep those answers coming.  i think this thing can make it to six, seven pages by tomorrow.

  • I'm only posting in this thread for one reason, and one reason only.

Andy Griffith is NOT midwest. XDDDD

I actually live five minutes from "Mayberry", North Carolina, which is actually called Mt. Airy - the real-life town that inspired the fictional series and where Andy Griffith himself grew up. And believe it or not, it's ridiculously similar to the television series still, right down to Floyd's barbershop giving $2 haircuts and Snappy Lunch's famous porkchop sandwich. I mean, aside from the occasional meth lab way out in the boondocks, the town still has horrifically conservative and traditional roots. Traffic jams happen because of people rushing to Golden Corral for Sunday Brunch, openly displayed tattoos will earn several harsh glances your way for indecency (yet obese beer-gut bellies hanging over jeans won't), and you will be ostracized if you swear in public. Actually, it takes me off guard if I hear someone utter anything worse than "crap" because it just doesn't happen here.

So yeah, Andy Griffith is Southeast, and places like that still exist. But for the record, I HATE LIVING HERE and the only reason I'm still at home is so I can help my mom. These safe havens with no knowledge of the "corrupt" do exist, but by the time people come to their senses the town will be dead anyway.

  • I posted on the first page, read how messy it got by the second page and skipped over the rest, so 1000 apologizes if this has been covered:

Why does it need to be a family game? Why is there lobbying for it to be a family game? There are family movies, and other movies. It's like lobbying for the Hangover to be a family movie. There's no need, because families can go see Marley and Me. (or the recent approximate of both).

Why does everything have to accommodate families?

Glitch is not a family game. It's just not. Does anyone sit around the dinner table and say "So johnny/jenny, give any good happy endings to your heavy glitch petting today?" - it's not the cussin' from the players that makes it family or not family. It's the game itself that's meant to be played by ADULTS. Back in the day, there was a time when adults had adult things (not talking freaky deaky stuff or porn), and families had family things, and adults were happy to have an adult space  in which to indulge when they got a babysitter or or whatever.

Should bars be family places? Even if there was no cussin' bars aren't family places. Casino floors? Not family places. Wild parties? Even with only the queen's english, not family places. Why is there this call for glitch to be a family place?

And they aren't young adults, they are kids. And 14 isn't the defining line in my book, either. Have you ever seen a pregnant 14, 15, 16 year old and said "awwww, that young adult is having a kd" - no, most people say "ugh, kids having kids".

YES, language filters exist. Puzzle Pirates has one. curse words come out "bluster bamicles" or something similar. You know what else? Puzzle Pirates is a legit family game alternative to Glitch for those who just can't accept it's NOT meant to be a fun for the whole family kind of thing. It just doesn't have to.

You know what else about Puzzle Pirates, with all it's toned down, family fun upon opening? The game I loved from alpha through launch became overrun by kiddies, um, I mean young adults, acting like kiddies and NOT young adults and I sure would rather hear a heck of a lot of cursin' than have to put up with that, if that's a "family game"

  • Dawgg said: American is the one I'm going by. Midwest? Where I'm from? I don't know. Isn't it enough that there are people from any society that would prefer a cleaner public chat?

Please, please think about what you're saying there. Why should a game developed in Vancouver, BC, Canada (and, I think, a little bit in San Francisco) conform to the social norms of the Midwest? That's an extraordinarily ethnocentric perspective.
Posted 15 months ago by Sheepy Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Hooray Sheepy!  You are right (and, see, everyone is saying what I meant to in a much nicer, less ARGH I must debate my points! *tries to beat sense into Dawgg* way).

I will state what I have previously stated: I love kids, but there should be corners of the world only for adults.

I will add that one mother I know expects her little boy (under 2) to stay home with a babysitter (me) when she goes out to drink beer and play poker with friends.  She also expects him to hear cursing (in public!), which is sometimes contributed to by her (as in, "OMG, he cheated on you with your literal best friend?  What the fuck?  That's just... oh fuck, what a bastard!" or other such exclamations) and be okay.  In fact, she occasionally curses to him (as in, "If you ever become a racist, I will find random *insert ethnicity here* people and throw them in your face, because that fucking shit doesn't fly in my house.").  Most importantly, when he is in public and something bothers him, like the sun is too bright or he wants to drink coffee, she doesn't try to change it or kid-it-up for him.  She says, "Not for you!  You need to learn that you can't always get what you want, and the sooner you learn that, the happier I will be!"

Now, obviously, not all parents are as cool as this one, but they should be, and people in general should be able to stand up to kids and say, "This is not for you!  You can't always get what you want!"  Then they wouldn't feel so entitled to everything.

Oh, and this mother grew up in rural Pennsylvania, but now lives out on the West Coast, where I have been located since I was two.  She's also a psychologist, and tells me that hearing mild cursing in appropriate situations helps kids learn how to use those words appropriately, so that they don't go around offending people.

  • Lita, I know Andy Griffith isnt Midwest....I was just stating that where he lives sounds very much like the Andy Griffith show. Which is why I want to know where exactly he lives.

My husband is now following this thread. He is a Sociologist, this debate has given him great joy.  This is his response: "There is no social norm in America.  America is the epitome of anti-social norm, it's a melting pot of different world wide cultures that form clusters of their societies throughout the country.  How you act in public will vary greatly by where you go. Think about China Town vs. Amish Country. Then think about Little Italy vs. Fort Worth, Texas.  There is no true social norm. How you act, what you say, and how you say it will be completely different in each of those "societies". If you are looking for a "social norm", you might want to try Japan, or maybe Finland.  You might even want to consider China or North Korea. They have strong social norms, and no individuality. "

If you wander off to a super small town off the main roads, you will be in Andy Griffith ville. Drive a few minutes in ANY other direction, and you're in the 21st century again, and people are normal city folk who visit uptown charlotte, university area, hit up the lake, and go golfing on a regular basis, and LOVE to use awesomely foul language. Mmm I love coffee :) Also, Go Panthers!

  • I don't ever hear people cuss in public, and I do  think there are social norms in America, but they vary greatly depending on the geography.

Put this isn't public.  I come here to escape my real life, not to reproduce it.  The great thing about online is that you DON'T have to follow social norms, or worry about everyday life, and you can meet so many people who have different experiences, etc.  If I wanted to experience the social norms *I* am used to (which includes not cussing in public) then I would not come to Glitch to do so.
