Skills tests already started getting longer time?

Dear Tiny Speck -

I had started Better Learning V after one of the tests then paused it when Glitch reopened in this last test.  I started training other skills like you would if you were strategically thinking about the times when Glitch is opened and closed or when you could be around to play verses when you can't. In the process I noticed Better Learning V went from 6 days learning time to 11! What the heck!?

In all my times playing games, especially MMORPG's, I've never known a game where you started training one skill and then suddenly there was longer time added after you paused to go learn something else. EVE Online certainly doesn't do that. I can understand the need in balancing the game and extending time for other skills you've not started learning but quite frankly I think it's a really poor user experience when you have started training a skill and taken the time to get it down to a certain time only to have time added. It's really defeating and doesn't encourage one to keep training the skill at all.

  • Cat, some time is going to be added (5%, I believe) for each additional skill you learn. BUT it should have gone up to 11 day if you had it down to 6 days. BUT, what may be happening is that you are seeing BLV's current base time (with all added time due to extra skills) but you are NOT seeing time taken off for time already spent learning it. Wait 'til the game goes up to be 100% sure.

  • Skill development started getting longer times at the exact same time that Better Learning was introduced.  That's the whole point of the Better Learning skill tree:  to reduce the time that it takes to learn multiple skills.

When they added the 'extended time' feature, it was implemented so that each time you finished learning a skill, it impacted the learning time of all remaining unlearned skills.

Some people have tried the tactic of learning all possible skills, pausing just a few hours or minutes before the skill is entirely learned, in order to avoid the penalty.  They then come back and finish each skill, which will only add a few minutes to the remaining time it takes to learn.  The down side to this is that  you will have many hours invested in learning those skills, but not be able to use ANY of them until you've  learned all of them.

Or, you can learn each skill as it becomes available to you, and pay whatever penalty that incurs.  Personally, I'm going to get my house after reset, and then learn all the Better Learning skills before I try advancing very far on any of the skill trees.

  • Actually, if you pause a skill, and then learn another skill, the remaining time to learn the paused skill WILL go up.

Granted 11 days seems a bit steep if 6 was the initial remaining time, but I have seen some pretty large jumps if I learned more than one skill while the other one was paused.

  • I can't figure out the differences without algebra, or calculus or some kind of derivative of an unknowable function. (higher math not my thang) Alls I know is that it take a long time to learn some skills. And sometimes that time gets longer. So I would like to add to this idea PLEASE SIMLPLIFY.

  • Ok, let me try to get the formula.......
    x= skill time
y= number of other skills learnt
So assuming that it adds on 5% per skill, the formula will be

    (y-10)(5% of x)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've worked it out and this seems to be it.
ETA: Looks like it's turning into trigonometry.....Or something similar.....

  • Except that the increased time only starts kicking in after you've learned your first 10 skills.

  • Ok...... might need to alter that formula a bit..... Thanks for telling me WindBorn!

  • One thing to keep in mind is if you've sped up learning on a particular skill, and then pause it to switch to another skill, you'll lose the extra speed your donations earned. I suspect that's what happened here. Not only that, but when you start learning that skill again, you'll be unable to speed it up again.
