Delay Kindly Act of Randomness until Level 15+

I'm not exactly sure where the line should be, but I think it needs pushed back a bit.

It seems to me, players get the Kindly Act of Randomness quest somewhere around Level 8-10... which essentially sets up a blind-leading-the-blind situation. The giver usually still has a fair few questions at that point, and if the purpose is to get players to interact 'I dunno' isn't much of a conversation bridge.

Also, the giver is still fairly resource limited themselves. This means new players are receiving gifts of a single cherry or bean - both out of a spirit of not wanting to clutter a new player's inventory and out of a lack of resources to give.

By sliding the Kindly Act of Randomness out a bit, you have a couple extra benefits. If you don't receive the quest until say Level 15, players are looking to get rid of their generic bags around then... if you don't receive the quest until say level 20, it could possibly fill some of the boredom from 'learning lag' as the skill times get longer.

  • A bean? I've been giving out bags, I must be doing it wrong...

The main constraint on this quest is actually finding people at levels 3-5! It'd be handy if such glitches were highlighted as quest objects, if the quest is active. I picked it up around L10, and I'm L14 now.

(ETA ... and I'm still running that quest, given out a few bags to newbies but only one so far was level 3-5!)

By the way, the dev team are working on lots more quests (and more skills, come to that) so that 'boredom' period where you're waiting for quests will hopefully be alleviated.

  • Spong - I give out bags myself, and not because I have a quest.... but that's me. The addition of extra quests will help with player boredom, but it doesn't negate the other obstacles presented above. The 'finding a new player' portion of this quest is heavily discussed elsewhere and could probably use fresh input. Give the forums a search - there have been some fantastic ideas.

Before anyone starts in on self-direction within the game, skills = quests, and/or assumes I'm a naive new person making these suggestions... I'm quite adept at self-direction and including others so as to give them something else to do, I'm fully aware how the skills and quests work having completed the lot of them, and - I'm by no means new, naive, or confused. :D

My suggestions/ideas/recommendations come from a place of wanting to improve the existing mechanics and game efforts without creating a band-aid effect or just filling broken with "more".

  • Maybe expand the requirements for the act at various levels?  At lower levels it could be single items (I favour a beer myself when I am just starting out!)  but make the requirement higher for a repeat quest at a higher level.  At that level it could be a small bag full of useful things. (Which is my favourite when I am flush!)

I don't think repeating the quest in a different way would be bad, there is not much to do at higher levels and making up bags is quite interesting.  It would be pot-luck for the newbie which one they got! ;-)

  • I'm doing the quest at the moment and I swear I've given items to at least 10 lvl 3-5's and the quest isn't completing... Have I missed something? I realise some of them early on may not have had the bag space, but I've been making sure they actually got my items since...

  • Ok, turns out it was in my quest log, but not actually active somehow? Argh.

  • @Stomvi: Yes, that's happening to me with the 'smelt 100 units in one go' quest.

As for the original proposal to delay the quest, I put it off until I had something I deemed worthy of giving to people (i.e. not a bean) ... so pushing it back wouldn't hurt, but it's not a timed quest, so no big deal.
