A lot more taking than giving recently?

It seems that every time I go to the good secret hiding spots (except for one that is still goid), everything is gone. People even take the notes I leave that say take something and leave something. I hve no idea why they would even take the note!

It really discourages me from putting things in those certain places when that happens. Has anyone else noticed this trend or is it just me since I go to certain hiding spots all of the time to put stuff there? I've been dropping things in different random spots recently instead of those spots. Except for the one spot that I hope won't get ruined.

  • I've seen some of your notes! I do notice that, though when I see the note but no item, I do try to leave something. Don't let it discourage you! It's still something you enjoy, looking for places to hide things. And I still enjoy finding the notes, even if nothing is there!

  • I haven't run into your caches yet I don't think, but yes. and yes it can be a bit discouraging. I think you just have to put it into perspective and carry on as usual being yourself. True, some people are just going to see it as free stuff, (which arguably it is) and others who won't feel that they can share something of great enough value to be worth what they're taking due to level or for some other "practical" reason, but some - maybe enough? - will see it as an opportunity to contribute as you did, so....some things you just gotta roll with or it gets you down. You're putting out a positive idea and that's what counts.

  • It's probably the younger players or the newbies doing it, don't be discouraged! When I'm multi-tasking or in a hurry I don't refill note-d places, but sometimes I do just hide stuff randomly wherever I can and definitely give back wherever I take. Being generous is a good thing, not necessarily the norm, so don't give in! When more people learn better and/or get richer, it'll get better. :)

  • I agree with Woochi.  You just have to keep putting out the positive.

I've noticed the same thing with my project.  Just a grab with no care or thought for other players other than themselves.  Unfortunately, I prepared myself for this when I started the experiment and don't take it personally.  Part of it is just the way the in-game world is set up.  I figure it's THEIR choice not mine to act like that.

  • Yeah, my take-something-leave-something spot has also been emptied out recently. It does feel a bit discouraging sometimes.
Posted 13 months ago by Zurin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • the thing is... it only takes one person to take and not leave for the place to be emptied... you have no idea how much has been found & replaced...   I think more people will leave things the more you talk about how nice it is to leave gifts lying about.

another thing you could do would be to find noobs and give them things

  • Yes, Serra.  I find fewer caches in my journeys than heretofore.  I still drop stuff because it's sad to see a hidden spot with no little surprise.  And what else would I do with all this stuff in my bags?  I'm not putting items I value highly in caches.

I don't know if it's because more people are taking without dropping or just a few--you really can't tell.

  • Whenever I drop a pig cubimal somewhere it disappears immediately--I doubt there are that many people that NEED pig cubimals. What are they doing with all of them? If I see something lying around that I don't need I will leave it for someone that truly does need it.

  • Zauberberg has summarized this quite well.  The point isn't necessarily to give things away.  It's the surprise for people who might stumble on it.  I know how much I grin when I see a spot on the map, think about what a good hiding spot it would make, and then find that someone's hidden something there.  I want other people to get that feeling too! The world is better when it has little surprises for people.
Posted 13 months ago by Magic Monkey Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It does get discouraging. I still hide stuff, but started a new quest. I get my bags full and run around dropping everything I harvest, including all the cool surprise gifts from trees and chickens, etc. That was a blast untill I started getting stalkers that just followed me around picking everything up. :( Somehow, that took the fun out of it. On the side, I got to see the various responces....there would be at least one person on each street that would ask me if I knew I was leaking! A pleasant note about human nature. :) Some would stay just out of range and sneek up and take it when I would move on, and some would happily thank me. But, like the hiding spot gift takers that don't replace the gifts, the stalkers took all the joy out of dropping everything and now I am less eager to take the time and trouble to fill my bags and spend an entire day dropping things all over the world. Sad. I will still do it occasionally just to imagine the happy faces of the glitch that stumble onto a street full of things, but not so eagerly. Perfectly reflects RL, there will always be those that stand around with their hands out and never say thank you, as well as those that are grateful.

  • Technically, there can't be more taking than giving--you can only take what's been left for people to find. I suspect that what is actually happening is that more people are giving, which then allows more people to take, leading to more anecdotal evidence of taking. So you have to look at the bright side: in order for their to be more greedy people, there have to be more kind ones, too.

And I'd also like to note that sometimes I take the last thing from a hiding spot without replacing it, not because I'm greedy, but because I need a particular item and don't have anything worthwhile to leave behind. I don't do it often, as I can usually manage my resources fairly well, but sometimes I can't pass on the kindness right at that moment. So I just leave something somewhere else next time I can, instead.

  • i typically leave things behind on every street i go to, but i'm disappointed every time someone makes one of the good spots a designated hiding place.

does everything have to come with rules and instructions?

if you feel like leaving stuff, leave stuff. i do.  don't take parts of the landscape and make them into special spots with rules that YOU declare to be in force, whether that's cache zone or wood preserve or spice haven.

often when i see these drop zones, i leave the stuff, but take the note. i know i am not alone in this.

A couple of days ago I found two stashes and snapped these pictures before the stuff was all gone. I used to leave a pile of food or drinks and then after noticing again and again that one person would take them all, I started leaving single items in many places. Pics at the link.

  • I like dropping stuff and hiding stuff and will continue to do so simply for the fun of it.  The only time I got upset was when I was leaving food for the underfed pigs in Uralia, one particular street I had been teleported to from a hidden wormhole somewheres in the firebogs ^_~ and the piggies had nothing to eat, I was putting out food for them and someone came along and stole it out from under their hungry little snouts.  But when I called them out on it, they immediately replaced the food and apologised.  In return I gave them treats of their own.  I don't think any spirit of sharing or giving is dead.  On the contrary, I think as players play they learn to be more giving and loving.  At least this has been my experience.  Kindness leads to kindness.

Keep your head up and don't give up.  ^_^

  • I believe a true gift is given without the expectation of getting back.

I love dropping things around in hidden spots. Once I've given it, I also have to give up my expectation of what happens after that. Honestly I don't really care. I do it for people to find a surprise. If they are so moved to "pass it on" and leave something else there or somewhere else, great! If not, no big deal.

  • Personally, I enjoy giving a full stack of Expensive Gilled Cheese to an unsuspecting victim every day or so. All the cluttered little stuff people leave around just seems like.... clutter. Who has a use for one cabbage or carrot or potato? You just tie up an entire item slot in someone's belt by giving stuff like that. And storage space is especially important for newbies.

And as has been said. It isn't really giving if it comes with expectations.

  • @Miso George - Why not hand-feed the piggies? That will insure that they get their daily intake, and can also be used to get seeds that you can give/leave as gifts. Because leaving food on the ground is not the most effective way to feed piggies, there's a good chance that others won't understand what you're doing.  That may be why they take food that seems to them simply to have been discarded.

I do like dropping things both in hidden spots and also in non-hidden spots when no one is around.  In fact, I've come to prefer the non-hidden approach, since some players have begun to systematically search hidden spots, but it may not occur to the majority to do this.  I don't leave notes because I prefer the no-strings-attached approach.

And I sometimes will slip something into the pack of a sleeping Glitch, though if I see someone afk in front of a shrine, they might wake up to find a number of their inventory slots filled with low value items ;)

  • I gotta admit, I'm with flask here.

I'm a dropper - it's fun and I have no expectations that someone will leave something behind, so when they do, it's kinda awesome in that 'aww look ... people rock!" way. Having no expectations means that I have no disappointment. That's why I sorta don't get the notes. It's just setting yourself up to be disappointed when the cache dies.

But, more, I dislike people designating a spot as something. What if I want to use it for something different -- is it now claimed and off limits to me? Can I use it for a scavenger hunt or a funny photo or for hide & seek? I also don't much care to be told that if I pick something up I have to leave it behind. But I can play the game, I can pick up the note and leave a few sheets of blank paper in its place.

The most hilarious one was something like "A RANDOM DROP! I have left this flower and it makes me feel good! You should feel good, too! If you take this, leave something behind! And maybe start your own spot! signed - We Drop Stuff!" Um. It's not so random and certainly not a selfless feel good activity if you leave a note taking credit, pimping your group, and telling people they need leave something behind if they pick up what you have left. I took the note & flower and left random kindness in its place.

  • to the people who don't like "designated areas":

you can drop infinite things in the same space.

it could be a... drop spot and a scavenger hunt and a funny photo and a hide and seek... and a pig feeder and some leftover empty space. dont complain.

the point of caches is to ensure that there is always something there. for awhile there was one on the street where i live. i sed to go there every day wondering what exciting things would e there, and i always dropped something in return. ven though i was a newbie then and had low-value stuff. the idea of that kind of honor system gift cache thrilled me. then one day it was gone... and the peson left the note behind. with the empty space. i tried to fill it p but didnt have much... i like caches because they show how awesomw people are.

every time i get to a place that looks like a fun place to leave something and there's a note declaring this spot to be a designated drop zone, it sucks a little of the fun out of it for me.

what? this didn't use to be a designated anything. it was just a rock before you had to go mess it up with expectations. didn't you know that i had ALREADY designated the spot a free-stuff-no-notes zone?

They can reward you with much happy happy joy joy,  when around others of a similar bent and expectations, but as I've found irl, they're often an unnecessary recipe for disappointment, sometimes mild, sometimes cruel. All I can do is live by my own code and hope to meet others who share my view, with whom I can then build what I consider a positive sense of community. All I can do in this instance is to thank you for your efforts and keep on participating where and when I can in that same (or similar) fashion

  • It's sad, but just like in the real world, many people here are very greedy. One of the reasons I love Glitch is that it seems that the kind outnumber the cruel. The only advice I can give is to keep moving your goody stashes.

The reason for this is that once a greedy person finds a goodwill stash spot, they will keep coming back over and over to plunder it. I even saw a guy who had set his teliport spot to the trading hill. He warped in, took everything I had just restocked the hill with and then bolted as I splanked and mooned him.

It's for this reason that it only takes one greedy person to come along and discover the spot in order to ruin it for everyone, but if you keep moving the stash, and leave instructions in your note for others to do the same, then they tend to last a lot longer.

Eventually some selfish little Glitch will come along and take it all, but he or she won't know where to find the next one.

Try not to let the immoral behavior of others jade your own kind nature. It's hard not to become discouraged, but just try to remember that most of the people who play this game are good at heart.

One last tid bit of advice. When you set up a new goodwill stash spot, it's best to do it during the USA late night time. I hate to say it but once my countrymen wake, you see the trading spots stripped and entire wood forests that survived the night wiped out in hours.

    Try testing it sometime.
