Summon a Giant's Avatar; With a Permanent Buff on your street - using 11 of the Same Icon in your inventory!

I had an idea that if you collected 11 of the same icon in your inventory you could summon that giant's avatar onto your home street for an entire real life day. The icons would disappear when you summon the giant. The giant would float around the street & say different things etc. The giant would place a permanent buff on the street that is related to its primary skills that will only stay there until a different giant is summoned.

Picture Example:  Click me!

Example:

1.
I collect 11 Icons of
Humbaba(f.)
because I am focusing on her primary skills (located below), and my street is mainly full of animals,
"Animal Kinship, Animal Husbandry, Herdkeeping, Remote Herdkeeping, Fox Brushing, Fiber Arts"
I then click one of the 11 icons in my inventory while on my home front street, to summon Humbaba.
The 11 icons then disappear from my inventory.
Humbaba's appearance is that of the one used in the donate to the 11 giants quest.

2. She is summoned with a bunch of cool special effects, randomly floats around my street while randomly saying various things. And she stays on my street for an entire real life day.

3. She permanently places a buff on my street, that anyone will obtain as long as they enter and stay on my front street, that will only last until a different giant is summoned in which case it will be replaced.

(Humbaba gives a buff of increased speed of learning Animal Kinship, Animal Husbandry, Herdkeeping, Remote Herdkeeping, Fox Brushing, Fiber Arts. She gives an increased amount of products gained from animals. She also helps keep your animals fed on the street where she was summoned, so that you only need to feed them 1/3 of the time it used to take. Creating string is faster and you obtain more while on this street as well. A fox has a very, very random chance of appearing on this street.)

[Also every giant buff gives double the increased chance of receiving giant love.
Click to receive GIANT LOVE!]

[If you were to enter this home street it would show Humbaba's icon on the features screen.
Humbaba Mockup, Clicky!]

  • +1 on the overall concept, maybe tweak a few details, but a great idea for an "advanced player" goal/achievement!

  • 121 emblems? wowza that seems a bit steep. if we are to see the giants i would prefer them to be world events, unlock temp streets, cool buffs/gifts ect. maybe they start off on your street then move back into their realm..or you unlock a gate to them? hmm. well i would like to see them play a larger role in the game.

  • @Acehazbin , It is a lot of emblems, because it is a big, cool reward!

  • Ohh, nice idea... Though I kinda got the idea that the giants are more like the size of planets.  Or possibly even bigger... Still, summoning a tiny little portion of a Giant as an Avatar, for a while, that could be pretty cool.  And definitely a reward worth collecting 121 emblems for.

  • Unsure.

This is a pretty cool thing in concept, but there are possible repercussions.

One immediate effect would be that the price of emblems currently being sold by players would skyrocket (and advanced players would have the currants to purchase them), whereas the availability of emblems would plummet (which is pretty bad for people who want the emblems for things like speeding up skill learning or even just making icons to keep).

Since the buff is permanent, you could bookmark 11 people who each have a different giant's buff, and then instead of going to other people's streets for harvesting, you'd just go to buffed streets that gave bonuses for what you need. In this case, if I wanted piggy meat, I'd go to a Humbaba-buffed street to get more than usual instead of bothering with animal routes or with raising my own piggies. I'd also be touring the buffed streets depending on the skill I'm learning - right now, I'm learning Teleportation V, so I'd just park my Glitch in a Lem-buffed street and go AFK. Lastly if I needed to craft something - say, strings - I'd go to a buffed street to get more of the item I crafted, and so forth.

What this means in practice: I'd have no incentive to tour Ur to harvest resources or to visit unbuffed home streets. Buffed streets would get visited often and the street owner would harvest a lot of iMG from these visits (which they probably don't even need if they have the resources to collect 121 emblems). I'd probably only bother with regular streets if I ran out of buffed streets to visit. Why would I want to toil away at the Sparkly Rock route streets if I could go to a Zille-buffed street and get more ore from mining instead?

if we are to see the giants i would prefer them to be world events, unlock temp streets, cool buffs/gifts ect

+1 to this, though. Or even just having temporarily blessed Ur streets/shrines, similar to how the Rook will randomly attack a street? You could get a temporary buff from the shrine (lasting, say, 10 minutes) or some such. That way, no player street is being favored over the other, there is less potential for abuse, and it gives players an incentive to be social (e.g. by creating a group similar to Rook Alerts for blessed street alerts and so forth). It also adds extra incentive to walk around Ur even if you've already been to every location.

  • Thanks FineousFingers, Yeah its just their avatar. :-)

Makai, you bring up some good points. The emblems may or may not rise in price, but they are still obtainable by donating to the shrines. Most people likely bookmark the best streets already, for example if I need cherries, I'd remember a street that has as many cherry trees as it can fit on it. You'd likely still need an animal route as it wouldn't give infinite meat of course..
In terms of going AFK to learn a skill faster, that would be your choice, but it would be a bit boring of course instead of doing something else, and a lot of people go AFK in home streets already. The buff rewards of course are not set in stone, I was just trying to lay out a bit of a foundation. In terms of not having an incentive to explore UR, I already feel this way, that our streets are overpowered how they are right now and don't have much incentive besides the qurazy quoins. Since I felt this is the direction Tiny Speck is going for, it wouldn't make much of a difference for that if they add this in my opinion. I'd love to hear if Tiny Speck wants us to be on our Home streets more or out in Ur more, and if they want us out in Ur more, I'm wondering how they are going to change streets around?

  • The emblems may or may not rise in price

They definitely will rise in price. Their availability is limited, even if they can be obtained by donating to shrines. Each time you get an emblem, you need 100 more favor points to get the next. There comes a point when donating is not advantageous and purchasing them is cheaper. The ones available for purchase would quickly sell out, and new ones would be more and more expensive as they'd take more and more donations to be obtained.

Most people likely bookmark the best streets already

Yes, but it's far easier to insert yourself into a serious route and thus become a desirable street for people to farm in than it is to get 121 emblems and get blessed. This would effectively lock people out of getting a desirable street until they can get all 121 emblems, which for newer players would become increasingly less possible as the price of emblems goes up. This would just give established players even more of an edge re: making their street desirable to visit. Making it so these buffs happen in regular streets would take care of that gap, since it wouldn't make any player street more desirable than the other.

In terms of going AFK to learn a skill faster, that would be your choice, but it would be a bit boring of course instead of doing something else, and a lot of people go AFK in home streets already.

It wouldn't be boring because I could leave my Glitch snoozing on a street while I'm off doing things that aren't playing, like sleeping, working, eating, going to class, showering, et cetera - it would just mean I could learn any skill faster just by idling. Skills are already learned by waiting, we don't need more incentive to sit somewhere and wait. The fact people go AFK in home streets already has no impact since there is no benefit to AFKing in home streets currently. Adding the benefit is a problem - why should you get a benefit for idling and taking up resources?

In terms of not having an incentive to explore UR, I already feel this way, that our streets are overpowered how they are right now and don't have much incentive besides the qurazy quoins

Then it's not unreasonable to argue that there shouldn't be even less of an incentive to explore. The idea of random blessings around the world similar to Rook attacks would have the opposite effect and give us more reason to explore.

I honestly don't think TS would have bothered creating such a huge world if they didn't want us to actually play in it.

It's still a cool idea in theory, but in practice, it's a really bad idea if it's done for home streets, which as you pointed out already have the potential to be better than world streets.

I took a quick look at Glitch Remote and, with enough money and by being quick enough, you could buy all the 121 emblems necessary for a buff within a few minutes. That means anyone online with enough money immediately after something like this went live could get a buff for their street - and, to boot, significantly reduce the availability of emblems, making it harder for the next person (and then harder for the next, and the next, and the next). That's a pretty severe lack of balance - one or two people could easily and quickly get this (which is supposed to be something you need to put a lot of effort into) and reap the benefits before anyone else, and then everyone else is forced to buy more expensive emblems or spend a ton of resources on donating.

Making it so you need to donate for your own emblems, on the other hand, would tip the scales unfavorably for people who have been around a while and have spent/sold the emblems they've already obtained. I myself have donated enough for, say, 25 emblems of Lem, 11 of which went toward an icon (which I'm keeping), 1 toward unlocking a skill, and several spent toward learning a skill. Emblems would still disappear from the market because people selling them would pull them off of auctions/SDBs to use for their own icons/buffs.

There's really no way to go about this that wouldn't screw someone over and affect the emblem market, not if things are as you proposed.

(Also if there is any doubt as to how selling out can make prices go up - I bought all the Essences of Gandlevery available in Auctions 2 days ago and they were going for around 150 currants each. Go check their price in Auctions now - minimum as of my typing this is 315 a pop. And this is a widely available, easy to make item - emblems are not and you can only get 1 emblem of a given giant per game day.)

  • Yes! Love the idea. A reward should be in order for 121 Emblems. So yeah maybe like some super Giant Love and time off learning skills associated with them.

  • -1, Makai's pretty much said what I would have. Plus, a Giant is supposed to be like a diety, and this would really scale them down to a common buff rather than a legend. The random street idea is better by far; it gives a chance to newbies as well, rather than currant-swimming veterans, and would make the events rare. +1 for random blessings.
Posted 83 days ago by Incendas Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I also agree with Incendas. Maybe it doesn't bring them to your street, but rather you can create a new thing for the giant. Like emblems > icons > idols. And having an idol on your street would do that random blessing thing. STILL, lots of work, tho
Posted 83 days ago by Osiris χ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think making an idol would be a better idea, but I like the original one, too. It does seem way overpowered, though, but it'd be cool if it was a one time deal.

For example, you have 11 icons. You use them to summon an avatar of the giant that will roam on your street for the remainder of the game day (24 real time hours seems way too long to be not completely broken). After the game day ends, you get an idol, a badge, and lose the ability to summon the avatar ever again. From that point on, if you get another 11 icons of the same giant, you just get the idol.

This way, there's slightly less desirability towards the emblems. Prices would still go up, but after a while, I think they'd taper off because there wouldn't be a need to summon an avatar over and over again for the buff. Plus, the summoning of the avatar would make for an interesting street party that way! Summon an avatar, party hard, and then get a badge and an idol as a reward. It'd make the occasion more special, that's for sure.

Short run and long run price movements are not the same thing. While I generally agree with the suggested effect on emblem prices, the example provided isn't particularly demonstrative (the emblem scenario is a long run concern, in my opinion).

More importantly, I don't think the assertion (paraphrasing others) 'increases in the resale price of emblems is a bad thing' is self evident. The cost, via donation, to acquire an initial set of 11 emblems and the resultant icon would remain unchanged. Every player has an identical opportunity to acquire an initial set of icons. Acquiring further emblems and the proposed avatar visit would be expensive and rare (and arguably indulgent), but that hardly seems like a bad thing for something with such massive effects.

that's a pretty severe lack of balance - one or two people could easily and quickly get this (which is supposed to be something you need to put a lot of effort into) and reap the benefits before anyone else, and then everyone else is forced to buy more expensive emblems or spend a ton of resources on donating.

Perhaps I'm taking this bit out of context, but it sounds like this also applies to rare items and their vendors - a situation which most glitchen I've encountered find entirely acceptable.
