Irrelephant thread: Are you Jewish?

I would like to be your friend and discuss Barbra Streisand & Challah.

I'm also too lazy to make a group & fear it would fail. :)

  • This is so random, it made me chuckle and wonder about the direction in which this thread will go. That said... ok, I'll play. Though raised Jewish, I'm not a practicing Jew. Even as a kid, I never could drink the Mogen David. I do loves me some challah, and also matzo with the purple horseradish. I don't have much to say about Barbra Streisand, other than I'm not a fan (ETA: I can appreciate talent without being a fan) and I think she looks a lot like an afghan hound.  It's something about her hairstyle, eye shape and expression. Can you see the resemblance? Dog ... Babs

  • *groans* I hope this doesn't turn into a pro/ con Barbra Streisand discussion. We got enough toes stepped on now. I know that's not your intention, Taylor, but a lot of bored/ cranky people running around.

not a Jew, but a Chrisitan, so beliefs are fairly similar. maybe cousin? *runs from thread before Christian bashing starts*

  • Napabeth - never tried Challah? You must remedy that ASAP. I think it's the most delicious of all breads (as long as it's the raisin-free variety). You should be able to find it in your local supermarket's bakery section on a Friday.

  • I'm a Grendaline sort of gal.   It's the big, fluffy towels and the drinks with little umbrellas in them that hooked me.  From that moment on, it was like I was born again.

  • I'm more of a Sprinkling-and-Recourse Friend (with some Tiish leanings, shh), myself. Don't get the umbrellas, but the drinks... ooooohhhh, the drinks...

    I miss the bats, though.

  • And your Grandma's Chopped Liver
Posted 17 months ago by PurpleLogic Subscriber! | Permalink
  • ooooh hamantashen. I crave that year-round. And Latkes. Mmmm! I'll pass on the rest.

One of my grandmothers put prunes in the charoset and in the tsimis, and just about everything else. All the prunes made it look like cockroaches descended upon the passover table. She was a truly lousy cook.

  • I tried Gefilte fish ONCE... no thank you but I love matzoh bread. I have been to a Seder dinner and that was a beautiful thing.  I love tradition...families that stay and pray together. This is a good thing. and macaroons, can't get enough of them.

  • I love this forum, I married a nice Jewish Man going on almost 9 years ago. Oh man, you haven't fully experienced all of what life has to offer until you marry into a Jewish family. I fit right in and achieved "JAP" status almost immediately. Coming from a fairly disfunctional christian upbringing, it has been a true eye opener. I love having 2 or more of everything, refrigerators, dishes and flatware, cookware, my kitchen is bursting at the seems with goodies, got to be as kosher as possible and all.

The reason I am chiming in is to tell a funny story on my 86 year old Jewish mother in law. My husband and I had been married about a month and went to see his family in Oklahoma. While there we all jumped into our cars and met at a local restaurant to eat. The owners must have thought they were being invaded or something as if your Jewish, you will know of what I speak. We were all talking, trying to talk over each other and of course laughing and filling every empty chair in the restaurant. The wait staff took our orders and and our soup and salads arrived. My mother in law ordered the pea soup. We were all still talking, laughing and then we noticed that mom was a bit quite but had her face close to her soup bowl and all wide eyed and pushing her spoon around in her soup. I leaned over and looked at what she was looking at. There it was, tiny little chunks of ham. Here is the funny part, she was pushing the little pieces of ham to one side of the bowl and just trying to get the peasoup w/o ham in it. Well, it wasn't working. One or two little pieces would find there way right on the edge of her spoon. Yep, she did it, she said oh well, I can't keep it from happening and she was eating her soup at warp speed like someone was going to take the bowl of soup away from her at any minute. I leaned over to her and I was laughing so hard could hardly get out what I wanted to say. Before I could say anything, she looked at me smiling and said Oops, that fell into my mouth. Everyone lost it, there was no controling the laughing, we were out of control. Other people in the restaurant that weren't part of our tribe were even laughing and they had no clue what they were laughing at. The moral of this story is: If you are Jewish and you go to a non-Kosher restaurant, don't expect to get Kosher food...AND...an 86 year old Jewish mother in law can eat pretty much anything she darn well wants too, LOL

  • And FWIW -- I'm Italian. Very. Italian.

In my experience, Italian mothers  ~= Jewish Mothers. Which means Italian daughters ~= Jewish daughters. Which therefore means I am ~Jewish.  XD

  • @g33kgurri, you nailed it my friend, your family and our family would have a blast. I even went as far as to buy a can of "Bullshiters spray" from Spencer's gifts for crowd control at our gatherings and I might suggest having a supply of adult depends on hand because sooner or later you are more than likely to pee your pants from laughing.

  • @celticladyone -- The project I'm on right now - my delivery lead is a NJ Jewish girl through and through. We laugh often at stories about childhood, mothers (now and then). It's scary the parallels. I also have a very good friend who is a Jewish girl married into an Italian family.

Family gatherings are like one big fish story. And we like it that way. XD

  • I was raised  non-religiously by a jewish-atheist hippie/artist mother, mostly connected to judaism through food that I taught myself to cook as an adult, as an adult started to celebrate Passover every year (my favorite holiday), and celebrate Hanuk instead of Hanukkah because we usually blow off the candles by the 5th night.  I once told my mother I couldn't possibly claim to be jewish and she was mortally offended.  Being jewish is not about practicing a religion, apparently.   I still don't really know what it means to me, and I call myself jewish--but the God of Abraham is no God of mine.

  • @g33kgurri, Your killing me here. LMAO! I am not Jewish, I am Scottish, my folks were real weiners so I spent most of my time living with my G-parents. My G-mother was old school Pagan which is pretty much what I believe and could bless you out in Gallic. Pagan means "Country Dweller", not baby scraficer and all that garb. I lived in Hawaii as a teen and the hippy thing was there, but mostly we just skipped school on Aloha Friday's and went surfing, LOL. We did the Hanukkah thing too, ran out of candles so we put the Manorah up, can't remember where up is now. I made a hefty baggie tree for like a Yule Tree/Hanukkak Bush/Christmas Tree, as with our families being all joined and messed up we have to have something for the Bathlicks. OK, some of the family is Christian, some went part time to Baptist church and some time to Catholic Church and sometime to the Pagan church w/me which is anywhere, fishing, fleamarkets or just sitting around drinking spirits. But we all really make out during the holidays as you can imagine, 8 days of this, 12 days of that, gets confusing. My husband married outside of the lenage for the first time all the way back to The Levi Tribe. My husband doesn't practice kosher but some of his family does so that is why I have the ability to keep some things on the ready. His best friend is a Rabbi twice widowed now poor man. As for me, I guess I go for The Goddess and just want to be the best person I can be and only bring joy and laughter to the lives of my family and friends.

  • To be more irrelephanter, the very BEST french toast is nutella stuffed baked french toast that I make.

@celticlady - letmetellya  I come from an Italian family. Catholic wasn't an option just like pasta isn't an option. It's just sort of how it is. We're also likely a teensy bit Greek based on my research but don't tell La Famiglia because I might be disowned, and I'm certain dead relatives are rolling about in their dusty graves as I type this. If you don't hear from me at the start of the next test, you'll know that I've become good friends with Lucco Brazzi.

We have more stories than tape in a ticker tape parade. They are glorious and hilarious and make me giggle every time I hear them. They are a rich verbal history that is awesome to share.
