Auctions are sweet! Bartering would be sweeter.

So I'm standing at a project that is in dire need of dirt. All nearby areas are tapped out for dirt. I'm constantly refreshing the auctions page to see if anyone is selling dirt but who would get some dirt and think oh hey, people may want to buy this?

It would be awesome if I could post an item up for trade then say what I would like to accept in return, a la Settlers of Cataan.

  • The auctions, as we know them, should actually be eliminated and replaced with bartering or with a real auction system, highest bid gets it when the auction times out. Both for sale and wanted sections should exist.

  • with so few technically "rare" items I don't see true auctions that expire at a specified time being a benefit to anyone. That would just mean that the auction house becomes pages and pages of meat, milk, dirt, ore, food sitting around bid up to X standard price and then waiting to finish.

It certainly wouldn't help a street project go faster. Better UI to get past the first pages of auctions, and more usage by players would be what is needed here. but usage and having a critical mass in the marketplace where it can see when there's a glut of a product and adapt is what the biggest hurdle to the auctions being useful are.

bartering or want ads (another thread somewhere) would be a way to help the market identify where that glut is, and are good suggestions.
