I opened 100+ cubimal boxes for science! (This thread is for posting cubimal rarity and location stats, not for trading or buying cubimals.)

All cubimals were opened from their boxes by me personally.
All Boxes were obtained by vendor (~90%), by rube (~9%) and by golden ticket (1%)
No cubimals were picked up, traded, gifted or otherwise obtained by another player

Here are the results, which I have put NEW UPDATED categories. All values are out of 100.
The original amount and type of cubimals I earned have not been modified, simply re-categorized

Please note that because 100 is a small sample size, that some cubes marked as rare may be ultra-rare, or vice-versa. Another interesting note is that cubes seem to be vendor-associated:
All three greeterbots came from groddle heights vendor.
Both Jujus came from Kalavana vendor.
Rube came from ilmenskie deep vendor.
Helga came from groddle forest vendor, who also gave me a helga before reset.
Over half my fireflies came from the Mazzala swamp continent. (mirch, chakra, jethimad)
If I recall right, dustbunnies and cacti seemed to come from the Grumbla (north) continent

Any more cubimal statistics information will be *greatly* appreciated!

(It seems more and more likely that location is *not* a factor in what cubes appear where. However, I don't have enough data on individual vendors to confirm this.)

  • Yay! So according to the stats posted here, my snocone vendor cubimal is pretty rare. I like it!
Posted 14 months ago by The Black Chicken Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Wow, I didn't even think to keep track of it, but luckily, my memory seems to be holding up.  I'll keep better track, separately, from now on, but what I have:

    Chick: 3
    Piggy: 1
    Greeterbot: 1
    Smuggler: 1
    Firefly: 2
    Butterfly: 2

I bought my first chick at auction and received the second two from the gameshow wheel.  The Piggy and greeterbot were also bought at auction.  The smuggler (I think) was bought from a toy vendor near the museum.  The fireflies and the first butterfly came from the toy vendor in Bortola, and the second butterfly came from the gameshow wheel.  Keeping better track: now.

  • @AzaleaMist: Thanks for providing this information , it will further help cubimal traders determine if location is important when looking for certain cubimals.

To other glitchen: please remember that this thread is about sharing statistics like where you got your rare cubimals, and the likelihood of getting a specific cubimal given a large sample of them. The thread is not intended for people looking to buy, sell, or trade cubimals. There are many other threads (and even a group!) that will help you find the cubimals you want. Please only post rarity statistics here!

  • Fascinating thread. It could be a fun project to collect data on this, although the demands would be pretty high. It seems that the important things to know for each cubimal would be:
    - Cubimal obtained
    - How cubimal was acquired
    - Where cubimal was acquired (if from Rube, which street? if from a gameshow ticket, which Giant and where was the ticket used?)
    - How many cubimals in player's possession
    - How many cubimals the player has ever possessed

We could all run ourselves poor collecting data on this, but it's fun to imagine the project.

  • I'm doing cubimal testing in Okara Crast. So far I have bought 30 from there.
    Results for Okara Cast:
    7x chick
    4x butterfly
    7x batterfly
    4x pig
    2x crab
    2x firefly
    1x frog
    1x juju
    1x cactus
    1x smuggler

If location is relevant, Okara Cast is probably not the place to be buying unless you're looking for batterflies.

  • I'm not really sure about the usefulness of this thread.  If people get together here to figure out where to get the rarest cubimals won't devs just change it up to keep it a secret?
Posted 14 months ago by Treesa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • No... why would they want it to be a secret? Then there would be no point in having rare cubimals since no one would know they were rare...

Personally I find this thread extremely useful. It only motivates me further to collect cubimals and gives me realistic expectations when I'm opening a box. It's like Pokemon cards, or Pokemon themselves. If no one knew how rare a Charizard card or a Mew was no one would have cared as much to obtain either.

  • [Made a few edits here to reflect that this list is to be interpreted as the Toy Vendor's price list, and NOT the market value. Hope that reduces the panic attacks. :) ]

Just wanted to add my two cents and follow up on EternaTea's post.

For those wondering what reasonable estimates of what the Toy Vendor is charging you in currants for each kind of cubimal (getting rid of the randomness), I used EternaTea's numbers and came up with some prices.

    I made the following assumptions:
    1) that the average cubimal should be 5000 currants (the street price for the unopened box)
    2) that EternaTea's numbers are representative.

I also made the following change to EternaTea's numbers:
    1) I added "1" to the count for MagicRock so that it wouldn't have infinite value. (Given the sample size, this seemed reasonable enough.)

Disclaimer: Due to the sample size, particularly the very small number of the more rare cubimals, the rarer the cubimal, the larger the margin of error on its price. However, this list is the best we have at the moment and hopefully gives some indication of vendor-price for those interested in this sort of thing.

Method: I calculated the total cost of the 600+ cubimal boxes (3,065,000) and divided it by 23 (the number of different cubimals). Then I figured out what the cost of a specific cubimal would have to be to make the whole group of that kind of cubimal equal 1/23 of the total cost of all the cubimals (133,261).
    Ex: 114 Butterflies means: 133,261 / 114 = 1,169 currants per Butterfly Cubimal.
[Equation for those that likes it:
(Cost of Cubimal Box)*(Total Number of Cubimals Purchased)/(Number of Kinds of Cubimals)/(Number of Cubimals of a specific kind found among the purchases)=(Value of that kind of Cubimal)]

I'm sure people will have things to say about this method being not quite right, but it works for me and seems to make sense.

Without further ado, here are the prices I got:

    Butterfly Cubimal:...................   1,169 currants
    Piggie Cubimal:......................    1,190 currants
    Chick Cubimal:......................    1,448 currants
    Batterfly Cubimal:...................    2,221 currants
    Frog Cubimal:........................     2,468 currants
    Crab Cubimal:........................    2,835 currants
    Firefly Cubimal:......................    2,961 currants
    SnoconeVendor Cubimal:........  9,519 currants
    Cactus Cubimal:..................    12,115 currants
    Deimaginator Cubimal:..........   13,326 currants
    Bureaucrat Cubimal:..............   14,807 currants
    DustBunny Cubimal:..............   19,037 currants
    GreeterBot Cubimal:...............   22,210 currants
    JuJu Cubimal:........................    22,210 currants
    Smuggler Cubimal:................    26,652 currants
    Mr.Friendly Cubimal:..............   33,315 currants
    Squid Cubimal:......................    33,315 currants
    Yeti Cubimal:........................     33,315 currants
    Helga Cubimal:.......................    44,420 currants
    Rube Cubimal:........................    66,630 currants
    Gwendolyn Cubimal:...............   66,630 currants
    Rook Cubimal:....................    133,261 currants
    MagicRock Cubimal:...........   133,261 currants

Giving the vendor-price of the Complete Set of Cubimals: 698,317 currants!

Again, be careful about the sample size, but hopefully this gives some idea of what these things are worth and even more hopefully generates interest in gathering more data and figuring out better methods to determine better prices for the different kinds.

PS. In addition to the sample size issue, the fact that you can get cubimal boxes practically for free from Rube or the prize wheel may complicate things, but I'm not sure how to factor that in or that it's even necessary. It's late, cut me a break...

  • I feel people who post on what they got should include which vendor they got it from.  If it is location based, it would be a very important stat to record.  When I have time again, I'll start farming these things.
Posted 14 months ago by mtek Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Unfortunately things don't work that way. A cubimal is worth what some one is willing to pay for it. You can know if you're being cheated with your list, sure, but don't use it to hold out for someone offering that much.
Posted 14 months ago by Rygel XVI Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Rygel, of course. Important for people to keep in mind.

The calculation just gives some idea of what might be a reasonable price given how many boxes you would have to buy to get that cubimal by chance. It's like the supply side of the supply-demand curve.
I made it so there could start to be a more rational market in cubimals, especially in the more common ones.

Also, if anyone is good at stats, I'd love to know what the error bars are on those prices given the total sample size of 613 cubimal boxes.
Posted 14 months ago by Paddy Pablo Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Thank you Paddy Pablo for ordering the cubimals. While Rygel is correct that the prices are not what anyone would pay, I believe those prices reflect how much money you'd have to spend on cubimal boxes to get that specific one. (For instance, if you wanted a cube at juju-level rarity, you'd probably have to pay 22,210 currants opening approximately 5 boxes in order to get it.)

Posted 14 months ago by zZzZzZzZ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Oh, I was following Paddy's lead...
Posted 14 months ago by Friend Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Paddy wasn't selling cubimals, but was analyzing how much money would be required to get the cube you wanted from random boxes. Since the currant values in Paddy's post were based off statistic data and not auction/market data, you can't really use those values to set a fair price.

Please don't be discouraged Friend, other players have tried to trade/sell here and I've told them the same thing. I'm glad you found a buyer for your squid, but there are other threads that are specifically meant for that :) I wish you best of luck with your collection!

(The title of this thread has been changed so there will be less misunderstanding in the future.)

  • My entry on page one has been updated.  So far, still getting cubimals from the Rube (and one from the wheel).  No other locations have been attempted yet.
Posted 14 months ago by Gant Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Thanks! I'm glad the calculation is appreciated. :)

Just to clarify a bit, the currant values are not exactly the average amount you'd have to spend on cubimal boxes until you got the one you wanted (the numbers would be much higher in that case: the values I gave are actually cheaper than those would be!!).

The numbers I gave account for two things not accounted for by the average-spending-on-cubimal-boxes-until-you-get-the-one-you-want cost. The ones I gave make cubimals that show up more-often-than-average worth *less* than an unopened cubimal box, and ones that show up less-often-than-average worth more than an unopened cubimal box. They also account for the fact that after buying a bunch of boxes to get the one you want, you'll be left (usually) with a bunch you didn't want - each of which is worth on average 5000 currants; the prices I listed already have the cost of these extra boxes subtracted from their worth.

So there are several definitions of "worth" that would have given even higher values!

What that means is that actually I think that despite the sticker shock involved with the prices, those prices I gave are in fact reasonable points at which to start thinking about cubimal value (at least the most rational ones we have at the moment). For rarer cubimals, you can expect to pay much less for various reasons (not the least of which is if someone has a super-rare cubimal, they probably just got lucky, so since they didn't have to pay the expected cost of the cubimal, they'll probably be happy to sell it for less).

I posted these numbers to do two things:
    1) Give to people with no idea what their cubimal might be worth, some place to start thinking about value based on one particular definition of "worth" (and similarly, give to people looking for a specific cubimal an idea of how much they might have to give to get it), and
    2) Get other people excited about figuring out reasonable prices for these things.

The price list I'd be most interested to see is "How many currants have people actually paid/received for specific cubimals?" That would help us out a lot and give a much better picture of the market value of these guys.  Anyone have that kind of information? That would be much more direct since it would take into account already the fact that major sources for cubimals are the Rube, the Wheel, and most importantly, other people.

(PS. This "brief" clarification was originally two or three times longer! Man, I got carried away!)

  • I broke down and saved my money instead of buying boxes. Earned 100k, spent 80k on a MagicRock, and bought 4 boxes (all junk).
Posted 14 months ago by Rygel XVI Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Paddy - Actual prices paid, or trades made are definitely more subjective.  Mostly because people have had a hard time really knowing what to ask for in currants or trade for cubimals.  The vendors are no help, nor is the info screen, and in a world where every item (but these) seems to have a dev-set value guideline, people are flying blind.

For example, I traded my firefly for a butterfly.  At this point, I've opened three fireflies, and no butterflies.  To me, the butterfly is more rare, because I can't seem to get one on my own.  The firefly is about half as common as a chick or piggy in my case, but the butterfly is ?? to me.  I don't perceive a loss here at all.  Even if I get tons more butterflies when I open more cubimal boxes... I still don't feel like I made a bad trade.  According to your chart, I took a small (negligible, imho) loss in the trade.  That's good to know, and also good to know that I won't be losing sleep over it.  Had I traded a rook for that butterfly though... well.  /cough

The value approximations do help though, I just think that there will always be an element of "that one seems common to me, so I will trade down" regardless of actual value.  So actual trade or purchase info will be heavily skewed.

That said, I still can't believe I got lucky enough to open a magic rock in my small sample.  I look forward to seeing the Rube every time I hear him, even with his nerfs lol.
Posted 14 months ago by Gant Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Gant - Definitely. I totally agree with you.
@Rygel - I think you made the right choice and I think both you and your seller should feel great about that transaction. :) I explain more below.

In general, on sleeping on it, I realize what those prices I calculated really are:
they are the prices that the toy vendors are charging for different kinds of cubimals (once you account for the randomness).

So like everything in the game, you certainly don't have to charge the same as the vendor in your personal transactions: in fact, you need to undercut the vendor to make it worthwhile for people to buy from you.

The lesson I've taken away from this is that if any of those prices seem too high, what that means is that you should not be buying cubimal boxes from toy vendors to get that particular kind - you should look to buy it directly from another player instead for a more reasonable fee.

Hope that helps people; it certainly helps me.

    PS.
We could still use more data like the OP and others gave to help get more accurate "vendor prices", especially for the more rare varieties. For the more common ones, the prices are probably quite close, but the rare ones likely have significant margins of error (my stats-prowess is not good enough to say how big those margins are, sadly, though I'm sure someone here could figure it out for us).

    218 in total

I wanted to post when I had gotten the entire set, but.... damn Uncle Friendly just doesn't want to be found, lol. I'll update when I have the whole set.

I got one of these from a box from a friend, about 10 from the rube, and the rest were from spending every currant I've had on cubimals. :D

I have gotten almost all of them in either Marylpole Mount or Hayden Seek Alley. Marylpole Mount seems to have had better luck for me (for example, I got both Rooks from there).

I COULD save up the 100ishk and just outright buy the cubimal itself, but... eh. I've been giving my spares away to a friend (and I've almost gotten him his own complete set, wowza), and the rest are currently conga-ing through my house (and some of them are conga-ing through said friend's house xD). It's more fun this way, I guess, haha.

I plan to update this total one final time after I've gotten UF, so people can see what it's like/what it takes to get the full set if you just keep buying cubimal boxes instead of the specific cubimals yourself :)

(so you can see why it may be better to buy the individual cubimals lol)

Edit: Lol, just after I post this, I get offered to buy the final cubimal I need! XD Sorry guys. Hope you can use my stats anyway. Best of luck, my fellow collectors :)

For reference, here is a drop rate table from the Guild Wars Wiki, with support for people to add to it: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Zaishen_Chest/Drop_rate

  • I think it would also be interesting to note where the cubimals come from; as an example, I've received a large amount of Gwens and Squids from the toy vendor in Andra. I wonder if some are more likely to have one type of cubimal than another?
Posted 14 months ago by Stars Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @ Tegid, I'm trying to figure out if we can get the Cubimal page opened to unregistered users.  If so, I'll do my best to get a working table set up.

@ Paddy, great work on the price points!  While it may not give people exact pricing, it should definitely give everyone a better idea of how to price Cubes on their own.

Edit - Everyone else!  Thanks so much to everyone (espcially Zoei, great data set there) who've submitted larger sample pools for us to look at!  Whether or not the public can add their own info, I do plan on putting up a full table on the Cubimal Box Wiki page as soon as we have a few more good sample sizes (maybe sooner, if we can get that page open to the public)!

Edit 2 - Paddy, I forgot to mention this.  At a rough guess, the margin for error can be anywhere from 20-40%, increasing in error with rarity.  At this point we have too few samples to really get more accurate than that, and the error rate could be even higher, or somewhat lower.  I won't bother running the math on it 'till our numbers can be more accurate.  Your work is still a great representation of the variance in value between one cube and another.

  • I've just changed the categories in my post to better reflect the rarity of cubimals. The change is repeated here. I have estimated them by order of rarity, but many may actually be in the same rarity class. Classes are further subdivided by stats seen in this thread. A '-' means the cube is low end for the category, a '+' means the cube is high-end for that category, and a '?' means that it could be either low-end, high-end, or in a middling area. PLEASE comment if you have personally seen results that are drastically different than these, and I'll try to update accordingly.

  • I have a very modest (and probably outlying) buying history to share. I've bought 2 Cubimals, and gotten 2 from the Rube.

The two I bought from Toy Vendors were both chicks.

The Rube gave me one Batterfly and one Yeti.

  • Judging from the statistics here I guess I'm pretty lucky. Started only recently so a total of 4.

2 boxes from Marylpole Mount (Groddle Meadow): Bureaucrat, Pig
    1 box from Rube: Butterfly
1 box from Sambara Stack (Kajuu): Magic Rock!!! O:

Probably won't be buying any boxes for awhile since I'm super contented :)

  • I started buying cubimals again (lol), partly because I just want to keep collecting them, and partly because I WOULD like to see how long it would take to get the entire set (and partly because I'm obsessed with them)...

I'm at 250 cubimals now, and I STILL haven't bought an Uncle Friendly. XD (and yes, I do have one, though I bought it directly from a user--I'm just on a quest, dangit!)

    COMMONS:
    Butterfly: 41
    Chick: 46
    Pig: 42
    Crab: 19
    Frog: 18
    Batterfly: 22
    Firefly: 14

    SEMIRARES

    DustBunny: 3
    Bureaucrat: 4
    Snocone Vendor: 5
    Smuggler: 3

    Uncle Friendly: 0 (*sob*)
    Yeti: 2

Total estimated cost... 1.2ish mil? (I got some from rube, one from friend)

...Heck yeah it was/is worth it. 8D It brings me much glee to hear people tell me they were inspired by me to start collecting cubimals.... heee....
