[not a bug] Butterflies vanished

All the butterflies in the animal pen in my yard have vanished in the few hours I slept! I only had minimum amount of milk in collector and wondered why!

  • Same happened to me! all my butterflies were gone. I advised "help" and was told that butterflies now die! So I had to make new caterpillars.

  • I'm well aware that butterflies have a life span now but not all my butterflies were the same age, two were quite recent additions, so I didn't expect them all to kark it in one hit, unless they were struck down by some ailment. Butterflies I had released outside in my quarter at similar times still appear to be there though.

  • As I understand it, the lifespan of butterflies is dependent on how many times they've been milked (including milkers), not by the length of time since they were born.

It does seem to me like their lifespans are wicked short right now, and that that might need some tweaking. Though possibly, they are meant to be ephemeral.

  • But my butterflies are only milked by the milker, and obviously the older ones have been milked many more times than the recent ones, so that doesn't make sense for all of them to die at the exact same time either?

Replacing them isn't an issue, it just seemed odd for them all to be gone at same time.

  • If they are dying that fast, I am headed for all of those streets in Alakol that are loaded with butterflies.  I am gonna milk 'em dry (and hopefully GONE)!  I can't even get in my house without first milking a butterfly.

  • Wow, lost 9 out of 10 last night!  That is ridiculous!  I can understand life span but all gone overnight?  Does sound like a bug to me :(

  • All of mine have disappeared too. If they have died, it would be nice to have some notification! I was just about to report it.

  • With all the generations of butterflies in my garden dying at once and free butterflies seemingly unaffected, the finger of suspicion points towards the milking machines. Either we need a way to automatically sterilise them between uses to prevent transfer of butterfly plague, or we have to understand that the butterflies are pleasuring themselves to death in our absence, and decide if we want to intervene.

  • Makes you wonder how long can a milker milk a butterfly before it kills it. Or how much milk can be collected before a butterfly dies. Or if butterflies were to die, should they also leave vials of milk, similar to the piles of meat piggies leave when they meet their end? The more I think of why such delicate things have to disappear, the more questions form in my mind...

  • Sigh!!!... Pigs die, butterflies vanish... well at least the chickens still seem immortal.

  • so I "replaced my butterflies" I hatched 2 butterfly eggs and got 5 larva? So now I have 6 butterflies...I am so confused

edit: found 2 more larva in my bags so hatched 2 eggs and got 7 ...

  • OK, so it's not a bug apparently, but the lifespans of the butterflies are extremely unbalanced compared to other animals, and they die off way too quickly. My 4 butterflies all died at the same time at the beginning of the last test. So I made 4 more at that time. Yesterday, I added one more for a total of 5. Today I logged on to find the 4 I made last test gone, and only the one I made yesterday remaining. I have butterfly milkers, and occasionally milk them by hand (but not very often at all). They only lived a few game days before they died. This doesn't seem right to me. If the point is to get rid of the huge number of butterflies in streets that are causing so much lag, that's fine, but butterflies in yards should have longer lives--they're actually wanted!

  • I was wondering where all my butterflies went! I've hatched at least 12 (and 6 just now, minutes before I realized I only have 5 butterflies in my house)  All hand-milked, used a mild-powder once, but I've hardly used them at all...most of them probably once.

I've spent time/resources on buying eggs, for what purpose? :/  Is there a max # of animals you can have in a house?  Because come to think of it...I might have lost some chickens too.  Oh god, did I kill them all?!

  • Yes, wish there was a way to affect the street butterflies, but not affect the home butterflies as much.  Or at least a way for us to take our milkers to the streets and get rid of the overpopulation out there...

  • I think the balamce is definitely wrong, heres why, we spend a lot of time leaning the skill that grants us remote herdkeeping and then we purchase our milkers/meat collectors, for what purpose, so our butterflies/piggies can die faster? Just doesn't seem right.

I find the overcrowding out in the streets a problem for my laptop, but love having butterflies in my home, not many the most I have had is 7, I'm down to 3 this test I just didnt have the heart to create more just to lose them so quickly.

A Dev told me the best way to keep my butterflies longer would be to remove my milker(s) whilst the game was up, so that kinda negates the remote herd keeping for the butterflies anyway.

I am now worried about my piggies, I have 9, I had three meat collectors but remeoved one to try to keep my piggies longer, but again that degrades the herdkeeping skill :(

I hope the Devs will look again to balance the in world need to control numbers with the natural desire to own and keep our own pets/stock. I see mine as pets rather than just food sources.

  • Devs, pls check the life span of these butterflies. It is practically impossible to be self sufficient anymore.

My hope is that I should be able to get enough food from my garden and my pigs to sustain me for one RL day of playing. And the milkers should at least give bottles to be able to do some cooking with the resources. At this point the only real revenue stream left in this game is mining, so I am not doing the homesteading for profit, just sustainability. The more I am made to do mindless tasks like mining and cherry gathering just to stay alive, the less I enjoy the game.  Please give us sustainability and self sufficiency....which means not spending money on butterfly eggs every single test day. Thank you very much.

  • Butterflies only live for a few days now with milkers out. I predict there will be ALOT more people raising a stink during the next long test when they see two whole generations of butterflies die in one week.

Faereluth: the pig lifetimes are either much longer than the butterflies', or they're still infinite. I haven't had any die yet and I have had meat collectors out the whole time. On the other hand, I have had two generations of butterflies die in the past two tests. This shows another source of imbalance: why are the butterflies so much more delicate than the pigs? Sure, that may be true in real life, but Glitch doesn't have to be like real life...

  • Huh.  I had mine gone at the beginning of the test and replaced them right away, but those new ones were still there and being constantly milked by the milker throughout the whole test.  Devs have mentioned that some other factors affect lifespan, so I wonder what else it is causing your butterflies to go so quickly.  (Two factors are apparently how many other animals are in the area, plus size of the area.  My large Alakol home has 25 pigs, 16 butterflies, and 2 chickens, as a starting data point. I also have yet to lose a pig or chicken, and I rarely milk/nibble/squeeze manually at home.)

  • @Larky lion: I have 2 chickens, 4 pigs, and 4 butterflies. I have milkers, and occasionally milk them myself (maybe once or twice a day, roughly). I didn't have two generations die during this last test, though: The test before the last test my butterflies died on the first day. I was then able to go through the rest of that short test and the first day of the next test without any dying. The second day of the last test (if I'm remembering correctly), the 4 butterflies I created on the first day of the previous test died... I guess I can go back through the old update notes and calculate how many days that was... I'll be back to report that after I've done it.

EDIT: OK, looks like they survived 4 days of the test before the last test (counting partial days as a full day), plus 2 days of the last test. So that's a total lifespan of 6 days, if only the time when the game is on counts. If time when the game is off counts, then it's longer than that. If hours matter (so it actually matters what time you made the butteflies and what time the game is shut down or turned on), then it's less than that--probably closer to 5 days.

Oh, and I have the largest possible Alakol home, although they are trapped inside that little pen.

  • OK, now I am officially annoyed.  Butterflies dead already.
Posted 15 months ago by larky lion Subscriber! | Permalink
  • All of my 14 butterflies of various ages had died all at once. :(
Posted 15 months ago by nekomaki Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Here's another data point: my 2 butterflies created on 9/2 (I named them after the date I made them) are now dead. The 2 I made on 9/3 are still here, but I suspect they will be dead tomorrow. It is now 9/9, so that's a 7 day lifespan total IF you count game down-time. If only game days count, they lived for 4 days.

  • Shepherdmoon - great minds! I named mine the same as you and my first 2 like yours are gone, waiting for the next day!
Posted 15 months ago by Teena Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Update: the two butterflies I made the day after the butterflies I made that died yesterday are now dead. So, their lifetime was the same: 4 test days.
Posted 15 months ago by Shepherdmoon Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It feels like milk price is wtf low. If a butterfly lives 4 days and gives 6(?) milk per day times 16 is 96 milk, just barely sufficient to cover the cost of caterpillars... but I guess all these things are in flux.

  • Shepherdmoon - just to confirm your update, my second day butterflies are also deceased.

  • Grr! Dying butterflies is a pain :( Hardly worth the effort to keep re-hatching :( What was the point of learning remote herdkeeping.
Posted 15 months ago by Qevcix Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Been traveling and got back in the other day and the 5 butterflies that replaced the dead ones last test all were gone.  Way too short a time span!
Posted 15 months ago by Cabinwood Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I can confirm that all my freshly-replaced butterflies also died within four days. Now I have to do the re-hatching process again. :(
Posted 15 months ago by roderick ordonez Subscriber! | Permalink
  • My day 3 butterflies were gone yesterday and day four have just gone now too... but all those wretched 13 in my quarter are still busy fluttering around after weeks and weeks!
Posted 15 months ago by Teena Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The 2 butterflies I made on 9/9 are now dead. It is 9/12 now, so that means they lived for 3 days. Either this is random, or there's some horrible disease out there that is getting more and more powerful with time, and their lifespans are subsequently getting shorter and shorter...
Posted 15 months ago by Shepherdmoon Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Mine just died too. That's way too short...
Posted 15 months ago by dopiaza Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Mine lived a bit longer, maybe because I was not picking up milk from the milkers?
