Local trade offers

For a limited time, you can initiate a local trade offer (for buying or selling) from the local chat menu. EDIT, later: The experiment is now over, so if you are reading these words, you won't be able to use the trade offer feature any more (unless you are reading this way in the future when we turn it back on).

Anyone in the same location will see what you want to buy or sell and for how much with a little talk bubble over your head, similar to how race offers work now. Clicking it will open the trading UI with the offer options pre-set so you can negotiate from there.

We're testing this for a few hours only right now to get some early feedback (and maybe even find some bugs). When we release this properly, the feature will probably be restricted to specific marketplace locations so trade offers don't get too spammy in the rest of the world.

  • Clearly, it was a test of a rough-edged implementation which organically descended upon Cebarkul because people go there to dump off stuff on the Tool Vendor anyway.

It also felt good to see the sales/trades actually in the world environment rather than having to make a special trip to the auction house tab.

I got a handful of cheap cubimals, and got rid of a couple of emblems -- items that aren't auctionable -- and even this implementation, with its bugs and craziness, is better than having the forum and Global clogged with people trying to strike deals on beta pickles and Rook cubis and so on.

Refined and confined, it might work, but I'm not sure how easy it is to balance having enough players in one location to have an active trading dynamic, but not so many that it becomes reminiscent of the end of Trading Places. Perhaps experiment with limiting the number of players per street who can have active trade offers at one time? You don't necessarily want to make it too restricted -- as that would stop impromptu food sellers in mining locations, for instance -- and if you take the "market streets" approach, you have to assume that even with multiple locations, a single one will become the go-to.

That said, I sort of like the idea of bazaars, with players renting stalls or booths (higher prices for more slots) that can be stocked with items, with an implementation that resembles vendors or Uncle Friendly.

  • There were too many bubbles over everyone's heads in Cebarkul. There needed to be a more organized way for this... maybe have a box in the center of the street that can be clicked on and will list everyone's trade offers on that street? That's how I'd do it... but that's just me. :)

  • You know what would be awesome, is a dedicated Marketplace, with tents and different shop front for each seller or like, a rentable marketspace for each person, and then instead of speechbubblethingies over their heads they could have a list of wares they're hawking they display on the front of their shop or just inside the door. I'm imagining something like what's in Twilight Princess (Zelda)... not sure if that's even possible but I think it would just be rad if we had something like that.  Or people could get their own little carts to have, like the Meals Vendor in Ilmenskie.  That way someone could push their cart from street to street and have their own list of goods, or could go and sell stuff like Earthshakers and forged items in the mines, etc... ^_^

  • I know that people are worried that places are gonna get spammed (and one always does), but I doubt that the craziness is indicative of how it'll play in the future. Buyers won't want to travel to a laggy street with hundreds of offers to search through; sellers will have trouble advertising when their speech bubble is getting covered by five others; passers-by will just find another way around. Even if it were made permanent as it is now, things would settle down.

  • Its too crazy....You can accidently click on an offer...Too many offers at once...Causes extreme lag that gets worse and worse over time....Then can crash flash and the browser and the computer..Nice idea but needs to be implemented differently so one doesnt suffer from all the Ads (Which is what it feels like) Maybe have a seperate window(Like the chat window) open where you can move it out of the way or close it that shows all the current offers. Also only allow it in certain areas..For example nit in cerbakul but somewhere else..Maybe a street that is seldom used, out of the way and without any of the street spirit sellers...
Personally id preffer it off or to have the ability to turn it off..There where some pretty ridiculous offers going on...Either people being greedy, stupid or to just be annoying with more pop ups...
I still preffer he auction system or maybe like the auction system but with an actual ability to auction...MAybe like a newspaper...You can look though it and lick the add you want to begin the transaction??? Would also be good to do for trades...
But please give us an option tot urn it off if you go with the first thing you tried...To many negaives to it!!!

  • If you make the spammy bit a single character, like the dollar sigh or something similar, then it's really not all that spammy and just indicates someone wants to sell something. It's when you attempt to convey the entirety of a person's ware-barkering that it becomes spammy, no matter which streets you decide for us are going to be laggy. Check out FFXI for a system that works just fine for single player hawking..
