Achievement for NOT Dying?

It's too late for me - but how about some recognition for getting to Level 60 without dying?
It would have to compensate for the favour & points for the other death achievements. But would be a REAL challenge. (I apologize if this has been suggested before.)

  • Patricia....I love you. I doubt this will ever happen, sadly, but it has indeed been suggested before. Thanks for flying the flag for us! The argument is (in part) that it wouldn't be fair to those who've died or died inadvertently because they'd never have a chance at it. Though if it was an achievement for amount of time spent alive, it would certainly be available to everyone. My sense is that it still ain't gonna happen, though. It's all about the personal satisfaction. :)

  • @Voluptua - Thank you. I read the links. There IS a good argument for this. I finally gave up avoiding death when there was no reward. Of COURSE I went for the death achievements.
Perhaps TS will reconsider crediting us for time alive. It does take great vigilance.
Create a "Heaven" for players who die from exhaustion while restoring projects or weeding other people's crop beds. (We might need to learn to play a harp or grow angel wings to get back to life...)

  • +1 I'm not a Unicorn myself, but I like the idea of a badge for those who are.

  • Well, I AM a unicorn, and it's cost me a lot in gameplay, and it'd be kinda nice to be recognized for the work. I get the basic philosophical idea behind regularizing death in this game, but hey! Staying alive is a specific challenge, which a few of us have taken seriously.

  • How about one that scales with levels instead? For example, if you made it from 1 to 11 without dying?

Saying that because not everyone can achieve it is kinda icky, because for those of us who weren't around for the first beta will never be able to get the Ascended badges. At any rate, they could just be for posterity, like the Ascended badges and give no real bonuses except for having it on your page.

  • Instead of going by levels, which are a one-way street.. how about "Get this much img without dying'. Same thing, without the 'oh you missed it forever' problem.

Could be in tiers, like many badges are:

    * Earn 50k img without dying
    * Earn 100k img without dying
    * Earn 500k img without dying
    * Earn 1mil img without dying

  • I see where you're coming from, Lorraine. I like the idea, but at the same time, I do feel that it undervalues the *time* element. I've never been a huge donator, so my generation of xp (and subsequently img) isn't nearly as speedy as some. So people could conceivably power-level and max donate and get a badge like this with relative ease if it was xp/img based. Some folks went from 1-60 (pre-img) in the space of just over a month. It took me 5 months. It would've been longer, too, if the spectre of level adjustment hadn't reared its head. So regardless of the form something like this would take (if it ever took a form at all), I really feel it should have a time element to it. Just my 2 currants.

ETA: I agree with Epi that it would be amazing to have recognition of the effort this takes, but I do see as well that even the notion of it doesn't go over well with people who feel that they are denied the opportunity of getting a badge like this. The only way I can see something like this ever being acceptable to the majority would be to make it for the amount of time spent alive, even if one has previously died. Though I fully acknowledge that this does and would short-change the effort of those of us who did the whole shebang without dying at all and made the choice to deprive ourselves of a number of other badges. I don't see a really good, strong solution to this, I'm afraid.

  • +1 for some kind of reward for not dying.

  • I don't understand why the badges need to all be achievable by each player. What's wrong with having a "unicorn" badge sequence as an alternative to the "dracula" one? It seems to me that just provides more options for flavor.
Posted 5 months ago by Janitch Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Janitch -- not all badges are achievable, e.g. Super Awesome Intern, and Confounder of Logic are both practically impossible to get. But for the most part the game ethos is "no regrets" -- there are few decisions that cannot be un-done (they are even adding shrinking of ones yard).

For me, a big +1 for Lorraine's idea of making the badges be +iMG based. It would make them similar to the Numismatizer badges -- you can get them any time you want, it's just a challenge to do so.

  • +1 to what Voluptua just said.

  • Again...I will always and ever say that img-based would be TOO easy. Time, time, time. Make it in hours. Make it a metric efftonne of hours.

Someone raised a good point last night in chat as well: Where does one draw the line at badges for odd achievements? If there's a badge for not-dying, shouldn't Agoraphobe get a badge for  levelling to 60 while basically being on one street? So instead of achievements, what about a street with statues for people that have done weird things? I'd totally take a statue! :D Heh.

  • I think the reason this doesn't exist is that you are suggesting a reward for NOT using a game element, and all of the game rewards - quests and badges - are tied to actively using game elements, because, after all, they put all that stuff in there for you to experience.

You could come up with lots of 'not' badges - get to level 60 without riding the subway (even though there are subway badges,) get to level 60 without teleporting (even though there are teleport badges,) get to level 60 without eating.  You could even string enough of them together such that you could level through the game without experiencing substantial portions of it - sort of a super-slacker-glitch badge.

You chose to pursue a 'not' achievement, and succeeded, and you are awesome for that, but I don't see TS making any 'not' badges.   Not because they conflict with other badges, but just because of what they would be - badges for not experiencing something.

  • Fair point, WalruZ. It's more the notion of effort required for "not" in this particular case. But yeah. I don't think we'll ever see an achievement for this. I do it for my own amusement, really. And, since I'm compelled to admit to some ego, bragging rights. My own goal. But I do appreciate the sentiment of those that occasionally think of this idea and suggest it. Warms my heart. :)
