  • When you hold a grudge it's like letting that person live in your head rent free.

  • @malo -- A friend once told me that it's like holding onto a burning ember; you're the only one who ends up getting hurt the most.

  • A grudge is a prison you build for yourself. Forgiveness is a gift you give yourself.

Forgiveness doesn't require acknowledgment or accountability on the part of the other person(s). It only requires you to set yourself free from the words, deeds, thoughts of the other person(s) involved.

  • Here is a little Zen story:

There were two monks - a young one and an old one - walking along somewhere ... it might have been in Alakol. They came to a river without a bridge over it, but it was possible to cross over a shallow area. On the banks of the river sat a beautiful, scantily clad young woman. She said "Hiya, bros! I'm afraid I'm going to cut my feet on the stones" (she was barefoot, as so many glitches are), "and I'm afraid that the current might sweep me away. Can one of you carry me across?" The young monk refused, because she was all shiny and perfumy and her bosom was hanging out from her dress, and he was afraid of getting his loins all stirred up. The old monk said "Sure. Jump into my arms, sweetie," and he carried her across the river.

The two monks left the woman on the far shore of the river and continued walking. They walked for about another hour, and the young monk got more and more visibly upset. Finally, he burst out, "Master!! How could you pick that woman up in your arms? She was all shiny and perfumy and had too much bosom, and my loins got all in an uproar. Aren't we supposed to stay away from temptations like that?"

The older monk turned to the young one: "My son," he said, "I left that woman behind over an hour ago. You are the one who is still carrying her."

  • Lovely story, Tradescantia. To me it spoke much more about judgement than it did forgiveness, though.

For me I think I sometimes have difficulty with forgiveness because I feel like, oftentimes, forgiveness equates to "it's okay." Some might argue that this is more about not forgetting instead of not forgiving, but sometimes I feel like the two are very difficult to separate.

I have more to share but I have to get back to work. I'll be back later.

  • Women will forgive you, but they'll be ready to bring that shit up at the most opportune time. They will remember every single thing you ever did wrong for the rest of your life. Men forgive and forget.

EDIT: Forgot disclaimer. I'm not promoting gender roles. I'm not being masochist. Just stating an opinionated response to actual life engagements between both men and women.

  • @mr. dawgg I have been told by my son that I am "not like a chick." Since I forgive and forget, I guess your thesis is corraborative data.  Or, is sexist. Let others decide (heh).

  • I'm going to avoid talking about it in-depth this time. But I can say I have met many men who hold tons of grudges and many women who forgive far too easily.

@Fokian -- I'm just curious to know where the other 2/3 of someone's IQ might go! :P
