BANKS

i think they should have a bank where you can go in and place currants in a savings account that gains interest, depending on how many currants you have in it the interest rate will be higher, as well as u should be able to place currants in to a friends account if you have there account number or pin or something along those lines, maybe even add a loan system for buying houses and stuff? just general thinking any ideas or added detail?

  • There have been at least one attempt at player run banks and I get the feeling that TS would love that solution. There probably need to be a few tools added to make it doable.

  • @LB - I'd gotten really excited when I first started and noticed that there was a bank... and then less so when it appeared to be a dead idea. Player-run businesses would be fantastic- might also give people another reason to get BA if they have to deal with permits/tax-stamps/insurance, etc. A Bank in particular, like you said, needs more tools to make it work; a big obstacle would be the lack of insurance/assurance that a person's money would still be there to withdraw. Depending on how complex the banking system aspired to be, it would also need an interest rate system, methods of loaning/mortgaging, and possibly ATMs.
I'd really like to see more than one, as well.

  • the only thing i cant figure out is when would u get the interest, it wouldnt be every in game day because then people would get currants to fast i think and it ruins the fun of the game in my eyes?

  • @mizplaced - it'd have to be over a longer period, maybe 20 game-days. I don't mean compounding interest every day, by any means. Perhaps the interest could also be funneled into investment in another person's business, a building project, a party, etc.

  • Well, if I wasn't a fan, I wouldn't have offered ideas on how to incorporate it.

  • Why can't Glitches just promote themselves as banks instead?

Aside from the pyramid scheme that popped up already, wouldn't it work just as well for someone or group of someones to become Entrepreneurs in the field and take deposits for individuals needing space or a place to store things and gain interest for such?

    Example:
I could run around dropping marketing notes across Ur and Imenski Caves promoting my "First Bank of Glitch". Ensuring I had TP5, I could then offer people instant deposits and withdraw of funds using TP scripts and a Group designed to contact my associates (allows for 24 hour services). In exchange, they could pay a small fee for early withdrawal or be rewarded for long term investment of funds.

In time, anyone one could do this and build themselves a reputation (good or bad, depending on ones actions). So, while official banks are an interesting idea, Glitch is the type of game which would allow anyone to invent themselves into such an entity: "Play Glitch and you'll have a chance to shape the world, to form it into wherever your imagination takes you."

  • True. I'm in favor of individuals setting out to do it themselves, I just think maybe extra things might make it work better. As far as the permits/insurance/etc goes, it just ties in with what I've been pondering for (currently underwhelming) skill-sets- BA doesn't have a huge amount of purpose (aside from building permits- and can be circumvented in the case of papers/CCCs), and there might be ways to incorporate more complex banking functions with help and further skills.
I guess a bank seems pointless to me if it's just holding your money- you don't have to worry about bag-slots for currants, so why have somebody hold your money if there isn't a benefit to doing so? Interest rates, loans and mortgages could offer a reason to use a bank aside from the brief novelty of somebody setting their own up... but most people probably aren't going to be able or willing to provide those services consistently.

  • @c0mad0r u make a good point to those who know what the game is about but think of those just starting out..there new, they trust no one, currants r new to them, do u really think if I ran up to them and said "hey let me hold on to ur money for u I'm an in game banker" that there gonna say "ok"...the purpose of the bank I feel will give glitchens the feeling of safety known there money is tucked away in an account gaining interest and such, rather then being held by another player until they need it back, plus u know there would be those people scamming other players just satin there bankers when they r not and u give them your money and there gone...

  • Two problems with game banks that always come up: when there's a player-run bank, either it's a scam or the players running it eventually get bored and drift away from the project, leaving the depositors high and dry.  And game-run banks usually wind up not making a lot of sense because it's so easy to build up money by playing, and the developers don't really want people to build up money by not playing.

Since people can't steal your currants from your wallet, I don't think there's a need for a bank.
