Whimsical Wednesday - Houses Release 3

The game is now open! Check the new thread for feedback: http://www.glitch.com/forum/general/20792/

------

The game is currently closed until sometime Thursday morning, Pacific time. The conversion process is running slower than anticipated, and we want to make everything goes just right, so we will not be open until we are ready.

------

Good morning campers!

Today brings release 3 of the new housing system, marking a full reset of houses.

The game will be closed for a few hours while we perform the reset
.

Do not be alarmed! Only houses are being reset.

After the reset is complete, your house will have been reset to the starter size, with no cultivated items and no furniture. Any upgraded furniture in your house or your furniture bag will be removed. You'll be given a small set of starter furniture in its place.

When you enter your new house after the reset, any items that you had in your old house or your testing house will have been moved into your new residence. Just unpack your moving boxes to get started.

A single moving box will contain multiple boxes for the old house, your test-house home street, test-house backyard and each floor of your test-house.

So that's what the reset entails, but what about new stuff? Well...

Furniture can now be crafted by players. Get building!

‌• Your new houses will now have their own web page, linked from your profile. You'll be able to easily visit other people's home streets from there (as well as from their "info pane" in the game client).

Once you've chosen/purchased a furniture upgrade, that choice is 'sticky'. If you upgrade a chair to style A, then switch it to style B, you'll later be able to switch back to style A at no cost. The same applies to your house chassis.

The initial furniture we give you is soul-bound. This means you can't give it away to other players. Other items may gain this property in the future.

Furniture can now be traded - either by using the 'give' verb, dragging it to another player or using the player-to-player trading system. You'll get an extra warning when you try to trade upgraded furniture. Auctions for furniture will be added in the near future.

Furniture should no longer drop through the floor when you're placing it on your 2nd floor. Or your 3rd - houses can now be 3 floors tall.

All street styles now have music.

Furniture items all have their own web pages, as do the upgrades. You can browse and bookmark your perfect setup while you're waiting for the reset.

The furniture bag is now sorted, to make finding your furniture easier. And it'll now be accessible anywhere in the world, to allow your to trade your items.

The old houses are fading away. Visit the abandoned apartment blocks to reminisce.

There's probably some more stuff hidden in there too, so take a look around, kick the tires and lets us know what you think.

update #1: The housing FAQ has been updated.

update #2: The reset is taking longer than expected - the game will be closed until Thursday morning, pacific time. We are being EXTRA careful with the migration since no-one wants the movers to lose a single precious item.

  • Right now, I'm forever tuning bubbles. In my head. Blue ones. Just to keep myself going until I can do it, er, 'for real' again.

  • Looks like I'll have to wait to start testing the new stuff until after I get some sleep.

I predict several of us are going to have glitchy dreams while waiting.

  • So I planted seeds in the herb plot garden, what will happen to all those, will I get those back? I lost two trees in the last update! ;[
Posted 7 months ago by Midori Melon Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Nope, you've lost them.  I had 81 plots sown up... bye bye seeds :/

  • Think of it this way: You did not just loose seeds/crops, etc.. You just had TWO MONTHS of free resources in your test houses. You had two damn houses you use. Gratis. New players will never have that. You had two months of MASSIVE advantage. If in the end, the payment was a a few dozen seeds and maybe some wasted guano, so be it.

Be grateful for what you had.

  • I'll be happy if my cultivations are the only thing I lost.  But I accept whatever the outcome as a part of Beta.

  • hear hear Lord.     Every time I harvested the jelliess or barnacles or mined the rocks in my garden I was grateful for the chance to do that for free!  I had loads of herbs and crops all the time and it was great!  Thanks for that TS.

  • Other buildings, what a fabulous idea! A garden shed! An alchemy lab! Or.... little climbable geographical features like an island you can jump up on, or a pillar...

Now I'm stuck at the office, and I can't even work, just F5'ing this damn page! :S

I can't wait for the game to come back up, and I can't wait even less to get back home to play!

Keep up the good job TS!

  • It hasn't really been addressed directly, but I suppose they can't exactly 'autoharvest' and box crops and herbs for you. Guess I lost a whole crop of Silvertongue and a crop of Rookswort. Oh well ^_^ Still counts for the herb planting achievement ;)

  • LBO has got it right. Losing crops, no matter how many, is pretty miniscule in the scheme of what's happening. We've known for months that when it'd happen that we'd risk losing any crops growing at the time of the change. I'd much rather lose crops, get the new stuff and have my housing inventory transferred properly and safely.

  • Unless customer support is a different crew, I would not expect too much from the developers once this is done. They will all be home - sleeping.

  • OK - everyone get off the roads if you live even remotely close to a TS office. Let these people get into the office!
Or we could have a collection for a rental helicopter.

  • "No one wants the movers to lose a single thing"

How adorable! No, I hope the movers take all the time they need to make sure that mine (and everyone elses) stuff arrives safe and sound in our new houses.

I am glad to see that unlike smallworlds (which I love dearly) TS is taking the time needed to make this a success, instead of just trying to get it out as soon as possible.

  • All lright, everybody hold hands and storm the closed sign!  With enough of us banging on the gate TS will be forced to open the game :D
Posted 7 months ago by IxÆoN Subscriber! | Permalink
  • If crop losing is the biggest complaint we have after all this, count ourselves lucky. lol Every time smallworlds has a release, the game either wont load or has 56 million problems if it does load. Like I said, I am so glad TS seems to be taking their time with this. It will make the game that much more enjoyable and run that much more smoothly since they are taking their time and making sure all the kinks are out!

  • I agree that losing seeds/crops is not that big of a deal, but players - me among them - who haven't been active constantly to amass huge loads of herbs or veggies are more likely to feel a slight sting than those who have. It's a simple reaction that shouldn't be taken as an attack directed at TS. Or do we really want a forum where you can't say your piece if it isn't all praise? There are enough gushing comments here to balace it out I'm sure.

  • I don't mind a long wait either, considering how relatively low-bug it is when they opened up in the past.  This is a big move, and I appreciate the care they are taking.  Quality over expediency, I say!  Keep up the awesome, TS!  We'll be here (eager and chomping at the bit) when you're ready!

  • @Zunar Some of the staff you see more frequently in-world are specifically player-support staff.  I expect they'll be hard-pressed responding to bug reports and help requests, as well as taking escalations of live-help questions, once we open up again.

  • @Lill Missy I'll take an espresso, if you have some extra (I know you are probably saving most of it for our lovely devs).  I'm going to need it with all the decorating I'm going to be doing today. :)

  • Does it suck to lose the seeds and guano from the things you just planted? Sure, it does!
I lost a crop of hairball and another of potatoes.

However, I knew it was going to happen eventually. I "duly noted" this fact every time I entered my test house. Did I know when it would happen? No. Therefore, every single time I planted crops since the first housing reset I did so with the knowledge that I might lose them. I took that risk, and, as Lord Bacon-o pointed out, harvested loads of extra crops in the meantime.

As has been said so many times before, we're in Beta, folks. Now, does saying that mean "shut up and don't say anything negative"? No, it doesn't!

Here's what it does mean: We are here to be Beta testers. As Beta testers we are testing the game to see how it will play for new players on down the road. Criticisms of how the changes and transfers are being handled for us old players are ultimately irrelevant, because once the game is finished these changes will never happen again!

So, yes, as Beta testers it is important to provide TS constructive criticism. But, in order to be useful, we need to focus our criticism on how gameplay works in general, keeping in mind how the game will be for new players.
