from a newbie

i am a newbie of the level 3. i ask you to please not give us anything but something small like ONE cherry. do not give us fancy tools and things. why you ask? its we want to experiance the game. that chalange of buying the bigger bag. keeping up our own energy so we dont die.not being able to have luxeries such as no-no. that is what makes glitch fun.

  • I think a lot of people have been excited at having the chance to help some new players for the first time in a while. I'm sure they'll cool down soon. You're right though, it is fun to discover this game.

  • Perhaps if you receive something you don't want or need, you might pass it on to someone else. Or just drop the item for the next person to pick up.

There is no single correct way to play Glitch. What makes it fun for you might not be the same for someone else. Some people play for the challenge and some people play for the community and loads of people play for a thousand other reasons.

  • Understood!  But unless  new Glitchen have formed some sort of Committee and you have been elected Spokesperson, you can't speak for all new players.

So, maybe we should ask before we give?  I am a little sad at this because I love to give things to new players as a surprise, remembering how wonderful a little gift was when I first started.  Some kind soul gave me a jar of EHSP with two doses left and I was so pleased.

Maybe you could quietly drop the unwanted gift behind a tree, it's fun to find things in UR like that.

  • I don't know about you, but I appreciate the fancy stuff (though I didn't gt anything really fancy yet) that is given to me. The game has many possibilities, and I feel that they're being helpful and there's still plenty for me to do. Like learning Teleportation and that other skill needed so I can make and sell/gift Teleportation scrolls.

Alternatively, you could just give your fancy stuff to other newbies. If you're going to turn it down I'll gladly take it.

  • But...but..."I have so much love to give, I just don't know where to put it." Fine, I'll just leave it up on that ledge for ya if ya want it ;)

  • I appreciate your comments hells busboy, but it is hard not to want to help out new players as most of us were helped. Last time I was on someone mentioned in global that they just achieved a new level, I IM'd them to congratulate and ask if they would like a congratulatory gift and was asked for a high class hoe. I was happy to make it for them, didn't care if they used it or sold or donated it, that was what they wanted. But you are right, we should ask before just gifting.

  • I like to give expensive items that are more novelties than major game goals, or simply gives them a great chance at meeting a goal.

Some examples: iMG games (the 25i upgrade cards: the more skills they have with upgrades pending, the less often they will have these cards show up), GooHF cards (same reason as iMG games), and reshuffles (because my god, reshuffles are priceless sometimes) essence of purple, purple flowers themselves, essence of rubeweed, unopened cubimal boxes.

Other things I only offer to give.  Like the player I noticed dropping eggs as he harvested in Alakol that I offered a bag to.   Or a new player in one of my regular chats that talked about how harvesting can be so slow and costly, so I dropped off 1 stack each of several cooking materials (after verifying that would be cool).  Or a couple of players I've found asking about furniture and storage furniture that I've sent SDBs or cabinets and subscriber-only decorative items to.

I played much like the OP my first time through, at least for the first few months.  Though I don't remember being annoyed with gifts, I also didn't seek them out and sometimes immediately dropped or donated them, for inventory management reasons most of the time.

    Totally kidding.

  • Whoa, hold your horses there, buddy! You're definitely not speaking for all the newcomers here - not to mention that wanting to pick among gifts before you get them can come across as a bit tactless.

How about politely accepting everything, dealing with them according to your own playstyle and allowing others the same choice.

  • Donating things you don't want to street Shrines is a great way to go. I personally use them like garbage cans whenever I walk by.

Another thought is that there are many ways to challenge yourself and discover things on your own in this game. As an early First Beta, I was given my first bag and my first treehouse by an Alpha friend Pinkey. Shortly thereafter I was given my first 50,000 currant mansion by ghost777, a player who didn't even know me and we are still friends a year and a half later. Since I already had what others didn't, I challenged myself to gift her 50,000 currants back within a week even though she never asked. And it was really hard to do as a low level Glitch with barely any skills, food, or currants but I did it.

  • You're all so cute!!

Hells Busboy, okie dokie, I won't give you anything.  But, if you find a single bean on a random street, it might be from me!

Each player will work it out the right way, for themselves.  Some like help or tips or gifts, some prefer to do it all on their own.  But, if you receive gifts, remember that even newer players will do  that.  There is a quest in which, after a certain point, a newer player will need to do things for much newer  players.  Accepting and then deploying unwanted items in the manner of your choice is a fine way to go.

Ah, I remember finding a bean on the ground and it was NOT something I left behind.  I picked it up, put it in my single, small bag (or was it just a pocket?) and went on my merry way.  Yes, and there was a lovely herb seed.  I carried it until I had to donate it for I knew not what uses it could bring in my future.  Still, I enjoyed finding it, holding it and letting it go.

At some level, you'll find yourself giving things randomly or obsessively to other players, usually at a level with a smaller number than your own.  I hope you enjoy it!

  • For some reason, this post reminds me of Hunger Games. But when I re-read it, I see no reference to Hunger Games. WEIRD...

  • Let the newcomers learn and enjoy the game, folks!

  • Heh, since there's a task that rewards giving gifts to level 3s, 4s, and 5s that comes early in the game, it might be newcomers learning and enjoying the game that are affecting the OP's learning and enjoyment.

Anyway, at the OP: the game actually is built so that giving is encouraged and rewarded early on.  There are even badges for it.  While I understand the desire to see what it's like to play without assistance, it's pretty much the equivalent of asking everyone to stop playing the game.  Better to go with the suggestions of others here and modify your response to the gifts rather than expect to change a culture that is in part engineered by the game it exists in.

  • Hey, if you are a new player and you interact with me in a kindly manner or whatever I will shower you with gifts, so deal. Only if you actually interact with me, strange newbies get a high five or a RK.

Give me your hands if we be friends,. And Robin shall restore amends.

  • I actually agree here. My sister started playing and she was like this is way to easy geez I have this & this & all of these!
Naturally I was confused and took a look and she had 2 of every basic tool, and certain ones were the upgraded ones. I dont even have upgraded ones lol! She had 3 bigger bags of food and a bigger bag of drinks. a bag on each slot tons of everything. I was like whooaaa. . . When I was your "age" ;-) I worked my ass off to even gain 5,000 currants and she's throwing money around like nothing.
Its nice when we give newbie packages to them with basic ingredients but wow. She's bored with the game since she didn't have to work for anything and I'll probably end up with her as an alt in a few weeks to keep her from being an orphan haha.
(oh and she didn't ask for any of this. She was one of the first newbs online right after invites as I saw the button and was like omg invite!! Hahaha so I'm not sure she knew how to say thanks but no or if she should... It's complicated! Who doesn't want free stuff?)

  • Thanks hells busboy, and with a post like this, I would have voted you to be the newbie spokesperson!  Hey, we all like a little help...just not so much help that it's boring or worse, you turn players into welfare beggars, though I guess that is one option of a way to play.  I have enjoyed every random kindness and the single gifts I've gotten from all the various players that chose to interact with me (and many were gifts where I got the first time discovery bonus - how exciting)...and in return, I've tried my best to share my sammiches, and now that I have a rainbow, the kindness too...but why take away the joy of discovery and accomplishment from players that want that?  So thanks to those that have provided a little boost, but not so much that you took away my joy of figuring out my own way in this game.  Having fun!
