Children In Need: Pudsey bear

So what do you all think about children in need glitches. it's that time of year again for britains and it starts at 07:30 tonight gmt on bb1 and finishes at 02:00 am on bb1 so it starts in under half an hour. have you donated to it or are you going to and are you going to be watching it

hmm maybe on glitch we could do a glitch in need and put on special performances and things tommorow night infront of crowds and we could do it to a special shrine so loads of people can donate to that shrine and to other glitches

what do you think?

  • I am upset that it has to exist in what is supposedly a civilised country.

I am also upset that, although the public will put their own hands in their pockets for disadvantaged kids tonight, new proposals by our current government will see the benefits given to many families with disabled children halved: http://www.teamaroundthechild.com/allnews/campaignnews/308-disabled-childrens-benefits-cut-by-50-under-new-proposals.html

  • ahhh that is also true

bbc 1 is a british channel i think it is also a australian, new zealand, gibraltarian and all the other british colonies channels. im sure americans have a bbc channel but its not terrestrial

pudsey bear is the mascot of children in need as children in need was born in pudsey and so they made pudsey bear

children in need comes round one year and is basicly for children in need (young carers, sick children etc etc) and everyone gets involved, all the celebrities in british and american charts are nearly all there so bieber, gaga, the wanted. jls etc will be there and they perform throughout the night. there is also special showings of programs like doctor who, eastenders and merlin. celebrities also do wacky challenges and other people all round the country raise money for it last year the country raised
    £18,098,199
    and in 2009 we raised
    £20,309,747

we also have a similar event which comes around every year called comic relief which is basicly the same but helps everyone around the world and not just in britain helps those in africa who suffer from maleria and gives mosquito nets, injections etc

  • Oh I had never heard of this before.  I knew what bbc was though as I frequently watch stuff from it via Netflix & the internet.

Does Pudsey also help children who are below the poverty level, as far as food and clothing go or is it just for sick kids?

  • Pudsey pretty much helps all sorts of children in and around the UK, poverty level, homeless, sick or young carers. Any child that has some 'disadvantage' (if that's the word to describe it?) can get find a programme funded by Children In Need which can help them :)

  • Yes one of the storys is breakfast something we all take for granted but those who can't afford it can go to a special centre £60 feeds 30 children for one month this centre has a waiting list of over 200children but they need more staff which this money can also help

I'll update this topic with more stories and a running total

  • The yard gives children who have a disadvantage a place to go and play. Mellisa as she got older so did her peers but inside she didn't and she couldn't keep up with her peers so she ended up left out and with no friends then children in need stepped in and sent her to the yard which gave her a chance to express herself and be with people like her. The yard nearly closed down due to lack of funding so £300 funds 50 kids to go to places like the yard for one full day

  • In the states we have PBS  - public broadcasting - which buys shows from the BBC.  Not their fundraisers though, never heard of Pudsey.   American frat boys would have a field day with that name...

  • I still find it amazing that the BBC turn needy children into beggars for the nation's entertainment. One of the most valuable assets a person can have is their self-respect and being displayed on television as an object of pity isn't really compatible with that.

Everyone slaps themselves on the back for raising £25m, but skims past the reports of £50m or more being cut from the governmental funding for projects for those selfsame children, and approves of the idea of reducing the welfare money given to their parents. Social workers, Special Educational Needs assistants, people who run youth clubs, all these people who really make a difference to those kids are having their jobs cut while the nation nods over its collective cornflakes about how "bloated" the public sector is, how does that make sense? But it's okay, because we spent *one* evening of the year oscillating wildly between feeling sorry for the Kiddies and laughing at the antics of a bunch of celebrities, and then donated a quid apiece to put our conscience at ease.

I'd rather have facilities for disadvantaged kids run on CIN funding than not have those facilities available at all. But I'm outraged that in a civilised country kids (and adults, but that's another issue) have to sacrifice their dignity and beg on national TV to be given things that should be theirs by right, like a safe place to live, proper food, access to education, a suitable wheelchair... why the heck aren't taxpayers demanding to know why their government aren't providing things like that as a matter of course? Why does Joe Public think this is okay?
