The crazy pig people...

... are starting to drive me nuts. They are pixels people, no feelings! It is just words on the screen and pictures. nothing real there. nothing tangible.

Every now and then I work on the pig badge "Piggy Hash Slinger 1st Class" which is to raise pigs to adulthood from eggs. I don't buy my eggs, because i'm also working on the egg seasoning badges, so i make my own. I don't do it all the time, but i'm so close to being done. I finished the chicken and butterfly badges earlier today, i figured I would just try to finish them all off. I didn't, so I will have to do this again, but that is besides the point.

First of all, it costs me money to move pigs from my home, so i don't do this at home. Also, it takes time, and I admit while I am watching The Walking Dead, I am VERY LAZY with my game play. I don't mind jumping, especially to get coins, but moving from street to street is more annoying. Marrakesh Meadow has a set of islands. When I am jumping around to get the coins on these islands, yes, I will leave animals while I am working on the badges. If i am going to over crowd anyway, I might as well have fun with it. On the islands, they will disappear sooner {if I am wrong on that point, please correct me, although it won't change my main point}. Tonight, I got creative.

On the main island i named 4 pigs "King of Pig Island" "Queen of Pig Island" then prince and princess. on the next three, i put two pigs each named "Pauper of Pig Island" then on the final island, 2 "Outcast of Pig Island" Then I ran out of eggs.

Okay, so first off someone goes off on me saying i do this all the time {twice before i have done this, although not with those names}, i'm not creative, AND that there is no badge, i'm lying, i'm just trying to provoke people. Look, while I know there are those who get angry, I'm not doing anything wrong, and I don't do it with the intention of ticking you off.

Secondly, i did have a small handful of people who got a kick out of it. I even got some gifts. This was really awesome, and i thank the people that have a sense of humor, don't take it too seriously, can get over it.

If I still got anything at all for pigs, by selling them or even just for donating them, i'd home grow again - but for now, with nothing for me to gain but the badge, i see no reason to have to expend more of my energy just because the screen has words on it that say pixels are sad for a few minutes.

  • Well spoken.

But . . . the "money" it would cost you to move pigs from your home is just pixels, too. For that matter, so is the "home"!

Not cool that some folks are being rude to you, but there's nothing wrong with different styles of gameplay. You're going after badges, currants, and the creative thing with the names, they're role-playing an ecosystem and trying to keep it sustainable, or just plain having a bunch of "pets". As long as Glitch is in "make your own game" mode, some of those games are going to butt heads a bit. You can take those lumps as part of the risk of your particular game (alongside accepting the rewards--those folks who praised your cleverness, gave gifts, etc.), or strategize to avoid them (e.g. by spawning your stranded piggies in a more out-of-the-way spot). Fussing about the virtual in-game PETA movement isn't really any better than those sentimental Glitchen weeping over starving pork-pixels.

  • So the pixels that make up piggies don't matter, but the pixels that make up badges and currants do? Seems a little hypocritical.

It would be easier to just say "I don't care about your feelings or the way you play" and be done with it.

  • People aren't angry about you releasing pigs into the wild, they are angry that you are releasing them on flying islands. You might as well release them in the mines, the subway, or in hell, because they cannot eat in any of those places. Players wouldn't even be likely to feed the pigs manually because the islands are so high in the air players can't see the pigs without climbing or using spinach.

In short- you purposefully left pigs in a place they'd die, when you could have just released them on the ground where they'd live.

  • Why not leave them on some of the housing blocks in Marrakesh Meadow?

It would take just a bit more effort, but probably ensure the piggies don't die quickly and would help out those that live on the blocks where you leave them.

Currently, the following blocks have just one or no pigs:

    1500
    3200
    5200
    6600

But you're very well aware that you are ticking people off. It takes less than a second to click on the street sign on your map, your glitch will automatically go to it....no extra expended energy on your part, and you can watch a movie while it walks. I agree with karibean. Its easy to make tiny adjustments in your gameplay in order to not "tick off" other people.

  • The cool thing about Glitch is that both sides are right. Players are free to populate the islands with pigs, and others are free to "feel sorry" for the pigs.

Remember that since its a sandbox game, you're free to influence the minds of the giants how you see fit. Personally I drop drinks on the islands for people to find, and I view "island pigs" as free surprise temporary meat. However if you feel otherwise, organize a rescue operation. There are tons of people all over who will help you. Just hop on the Sandbox group chat and ask for help with Operation Bacon (or whatever you want to call it). I know that if I'm online, I'll help because that's what glitch is all about, finding things to do.

Remember that breaks from the norm can be opportunities for fun. You just have to make it fun.

  • You are right, badges are just pixels. if i couldn't get them i wouldn't cry about it. BIG difference having an emotional attachment over a "sad pig" and telling someone you feel sorry for them because they have to "hurt animals" in a video game, and wanting to collect the badges. Just saying. I don't care that they feel the need to move my pigs, honestly more power to them - I care that i get harrassed, and not in a playful glitchy way.

Also, to add to that, yes coins are also just pixels, but pixels i have to earn to play the game, but again, not going to cry if someone else gets the coins. And as i've made it kind of clear, i was being lazy of a sort, so spending pixels that i would need to earn back again seems like more energy spent. Where as, they can just walk away from the "pigs" and no skin off their pixilated backs. :-)

ETA: Also, Vermillion, i was over populating the pigs on that street, they would have been "sad" anyway, ground or islands, they would have been over crowded. And I have been yelled at before for over populating residental streets too, with trees & all.

  • I like to hogtie them then climb up into the branches of trees and release them. The piggies just want to have fun tree climbing.

Also, to promote 'teamwork' play in this social game, its good practice to put more than one piggie on the branch.

  • Some people are empathetic even when they are in imaginary situations. Some people are pragmatic and goal-oriented, and don't invest emotionally in animal- or people-like things.

I think it's quite common for these two groups to not understand or especially appreciate one another. Most of us have a preference one way or the other—I certainly do.

Do as you please (according to the TOS) in Ur, but prepared to face social consequences (again within the TOS) for your actions. Sure, it's just pixels. It's ALL just pixels.

  • I think the whole point is to allow people to have fun their own way. If you don't like sad piggies, save them. If you want to release piggies on islands, enjoy!  Harassing other players is where it gets annoying. That's what block is for! :)

  • Pascale: "Some people are pragmatic and goal-oriented"

um, that doesn't preclude having empathy, although you unambiguously imply otherwise. I am both pragmatic and goal-oriented in real life and elsewhere, and I would not strand a virtual pig on a floating island, since one of the blatantly obvious and primary goals of the game is taking care of the game's virtual lifeforms, as evidenced by the available actions for those entities.

  • For goodness sakes. When people try to draw a close link between animal cruelty in real life and how we play this game it just belittles the cause of preventing animal cruelty in real life. You are telling the players here that there is no difference.

The piggies in Glitch are just playing pieces, like the chips and cards at a poker game. Should we get all upset when someone shuffles the cards a little roughly? Should the little metal dog marker in Monopoly be given a warm place to sleep between games?

Save your concern regarding animal cruelty for the real world. Trying to draw a parallel with real life and the game isn't going to work. You will just end up sounding like the people who shriek about 'violence in video games.'

  • I think it is rather funny that when I bought my house, it had a hungry piggy  inside where it couldn't eat.  This I learned the hard way when I tried to nibble my piggy.  So I set him outside and that was that.  Why would anyone care more than that?  Some people like to be mean in a place that doesn't really hurt anyone.  Stress relief is a thing that games are good for.

Those who get offended in a game really need to get a life.  lol.  Just had to say it.
Posted 13 months ago by Taliveth Subscriber! | Permalink
  • wait. people care about these sad virtual pigs beyond the annoyance of having to remove the pigs from the area so you're able to get meat from them again? that's seems like a delve into role-playing cause unless im mistaken these are not sentient beings and have little to do with whether or not you have empathy in real life...

that seems like as Izzy said, a clash of playing styles. some people are a little more invested in viewing glitch as some alternate plain of reality and others view it as purely just a game. different strokes for different folks, no sense in getting butthurt about it.

but overcrowding an area with pigs is a given that it'll annoy people cause someone has to clean it up or the meat dispensers will be out of order. you're inconveniencing others, complaining about their complaining is kind of strange logic since you're the one who directly caused the initial annoyance.

  • Ugh, now I see that i missed a very valuable chance to start the whole thread off with this image link from Doctor Who: images4.wikia.nocookie.net/...

Kashtana - thank you! It isn't about the fact that people want to "save the piggies" it is that they harrass people over it. Such as the campaigns to harrass people for auctioning hog tied pigs. Stuff like that.

Also, shame on anyone for jumping to the conclusion that my inability to feel empathy for a video game animal has any bearing on my love of animals in reality. One does not equate the other.

A really simple fix for all of this would be {as I have said many times over} remove the hogtie ability altogether and just give us the ability to easy release from our homes, like we can with chickens and butterflies.

  • It was close to midnight in my time zone, and I admit I forget this game is all on one server sometimes {WoW has spoiled me} All I was thinking is "closest main street, can get coins, not busy, they will go away on their own quickly just like the butterflies and chickens did". I do believe if you want a little role play, the giants will move animals that are sad/over crowded to new streets if you just wait a few.

I just don't get why people can't just be patient and let it go, just one street, just for a little bit. The in-game world corrects itself. :-) That's part of the beauty of this game, although it is a sandbox, you can't *really* cause any actual damage.

  • All seriousness, this seems like a mutually beneficial situation. You need to create pigs, other people need pigs. Problem... solved?

Instead of using words like "rescuing," or "abandoning," or "stealing," let's say it like this:

    1) Some people create pigs and leave them in public areas for other people.

    2) Other people who need / want pigs, have a wealth of stock to choose from to fulfill quests, fill yards, or just nibble / feed as they pass through.

If you don't want to be called a jerk, don't act like a jerk. Deliberately overpopulating a street is jerk behaviour. You think it's okay because it's just one street? Well, it's my damn street. There are 36 hoursing blocks on Marrakesh Meadow and many of them could support at least 10 more pigs each, so there isn't much reason to do that.

Had I seen cleverly named pigs placed in a clever way, I'd make allowances for that, though.

Posted 13 months ago by Woochi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • To me, the intention does matter. I agree that piggies ingame are pixels, and if pigs that are anonymous to me die, I don't sweat it too much myself. In your case, you are placing piggies you created, so no one should really care if they die imo.

I can see if someone names the piggies on their street and gets attached to 'em like that, that moving those pigs to locations to die might be pretty sad - someone's expecting to find them there to greet them when they get there, and give them a smile.

But your piggies, your call, imo.

If I don't want to see a piggy sad, I just feed it and it's happy again - no problem.

  • As has been mentioned before; overpopulating a street with piggies on purpose is "jerk" behavior especially when [the OP] admits to doing it because you're feeling lazy. Complaining about people complaining about [the OP's] behavior just highlights how much of a jerk [the OP] was being.

"Also, it takes time, and I admit while I am watching The Walking Dead, I am VERY LAZY with my game play."

  • The difference is that no one is pretending that badges and currants have feelings. I'm a vegetarian irl and I see no need to pretend that the piggies have feelings. I wouldn't kill a wolf irl but I'll slaughter hundreds in Skyrim. It's just a game.
Posted 13 months ago by Horakely Subscriber! | Permalink
  • also I totally agree with gimmegames. you can get attached to animals in a game, but there's no way those "crazy pig people" are emotionally attached to every single animal they see. Also, viva pinata is an interesting game because it's set up to allow you to get attached to your pinatas (you can name them, dress them, etc.) but it is very very very easy for them to be killed and in many cases it is necessary for you to progress in the game. Sometimes you just have to shrug and say "it's just a game"
Posted 13 months ago by Horakely Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The problem is that the kind of person that acts like the OP does is also the same kind of person who steals piggies off of housing streets because they're too lazy to find them elsewhere or make piggies themselves. And the same kind of person who steals the food left out for piggies (that is hidden, so they have to look for it) because they're too lazy to squeeze the chickens on the street in order to get the exact same food.

Yes, they are just pixels, and yes, this is just a game, and that's exactly why I get invested in it. If piggies were just meat and trees were just grocery stores, I'd get bored pretty damn quickly. Instead I have a family of French pigs that live on my street and greet visitors, pigs that I enjoy petting and feeding and seeing their little piggy butt wiggles. I even left a note on my street asking people not to take them and that if they are in need of piggies I will gladly make piggies for them, and still the pigs and their food get stolen.

And it's not because I don't try for the badges. I got my chicken-raising badge the other day without causing a single incident of overcrowding or chicken unhappiness. (They like being squeezed, I promise!) I will soon do the same with both pigs and butterflies.

It makes me happy to see happy pigs; it's one of the reasons I play Glitch. Sad piggies do not do the butt wiggle. This has nothing to do with me not understanding the difference between reality and a game and everything to do with saying your method of play does not coexist peacefully with my method of play.

You don't get to have your cake and eat it too. You don't get to play how you want to play and be free of all criticism. Sorry!

  • I'm a member of the piggy rescue/relocation group, and I have rescued pigs from the tops of trees, islands in the Meadow and Uralia, and other odd places. I do pig-rescuing simply because I feel that it fits the spirit of the game, I like roleplaying, and it's fun to do.

But I am fully aware that we are talking about pixels (or SWF elements?) and I don't have anything against those who contribute to the piggy placement mayhem, for the most part. I usually find it hilarious (though not always).

That said, it is community-breaking to some degree. I think that people are upset not so much because they care so deeply about the piggies (though I may be wrong about that), but because an unspoken social contract is being violated. In Glitch, where community "rules" cannot be enforced, "violaters" must be prepared to face sanctions in the form of disapproval and hostility.

  • Yah, I can dig what the OP is saying...it can be difficult sometimes to play a social game, especially one involving other people. ;) I'm proud to be a crazy pig person; crazy pig people are some of the nicest, coolest, most awesome people I've ever met, and I'm thrilled to be in such good company. But it can be hard sometimes to get along with other players, especially when you don't agree on game-play.

I hate to see suffering in any form, real or virtual. It disturbs me to see unhappy or "abandoned" virtual piggies, and it makes me mad that some of the more sensitive, kind-hearted, and gentle members of our community are subjected to (and are deeply affected by) instances of perceived virtual piggy cruelty. It saddens me that the compassion that many of us feel for our beloved community piggies is belittled by the (in my opinion) basically meaningless argument that they're "just pixels."

Many of us play Glitch precisely because of the pro-social, pro-environment, non-violent themes this game embodies, and we view the welfare of its virtual inhabitants (piggies, chickens, etc) along with the welfare of the gaming community as a whole, as integral components of that philosophy. I personally don't believe that causing undue suffering to piggies (or players) needs to be a part of this virtual world; I believe we have the power to do way better than that. And luckily, we have the tools at our disposal to help shape our world for the better.

As Glitchens, we're trying to help the Giants dream their "perfect world" into existence. For me personally, a "perfect world" is one in which piggies freely and lovingly share their meat with us, and we show our gratitude and appreciation for their selfless gifts by treating them with a little decency and kindness. And hopefully we will continue to extend that same kindness to one another.

Call me an idealist (and sure, call me crazy...you wouldn't be the first), but I want to play in a world in which piggies (and butterflies and batterflies and chickens and ETA: yes, even rooks...especially rooks!) and Glitchens can all coexist peacefully and happily, finding only joy in our interactions...hey, if I'm gonna dream, I'm gonna dream big. Happy happy joy joy! :D And maybe...just maybe...in our adversaries, we might find hidden friends. Maybe.....? (In a world where butterflies give milk and wood trees are in a perpetual state of arousal, obviously anything is possible.)

If that's crazy, then I'll happily smile and kiss a pig....PLURP, yo.
