Topic

This is my complaint:

I don’t have an issue with TS not liking what I wrote.  I posted a complaint---not a major one---but a simple complaint about how the changeover went.  Essentially, what I said was that the way the new boxes worked created a huge mess that I didn’t think was necessary.  Hours after the release of the boxes, Stoot posted a “before you open your boxes post,” which was, well, late.  I then stated that I would have rather waited longer for a better product than get a rushed mess.

Nothing I said was overly critical, and I think many feel the same way.  In my case, 100’s of pumpkins, cubimals, and cups of water—yes, cups of water—filled my house.   My problem is in the fact that the post was changed.  The way that it was changed made it sound less intelligent than necessary.  Could anything be done about the change, no, it was too late.  But, if another change were going to come, I would like TS to know that this one was subpar.  And let’s be real, this is not TS’s first re-release, no reason to believe that it won’t be their last.  Additionally, TS has requested feedback on how things are going.  Saying this was not going well is true for some of us; especially those who hoard items.

The next post which was changed stated that I was really upset with the staff member who changed it as such, and stated my shock because of how helpful the staff had been up until then.  I feel that submitting a bug report to find who changed my post would be pointless.  The fact that staff changes posts like this is scary.  I even stated, delete the post, but don’t make me sound the way they did.  When posts are changed, you can unknowingly alter the meaning and harm the character of the poster.  In my mind, this is unforgivable and a horrible business practice.  This is not what I paid for.

The huge majority of my time on glitch was positive—I hate for It to end on such a horribly bad note.  When I was told to take my rage somewhere else last night, you were right—but my thoughts are that only staff can change a post, where do I take this complaint?  To the TS staff who did not change my post, I apologize for some of my statements (though, they were edited as well).  I assume that only one staff member committed this egregious act.  I shouldn’t have so blindly pointed my finger and so broadly spread my words.  Please; however, don’t change the posts of people.  I’m fine with you having the power of deleting, but changing is much more harmful to players in game.

  • As someone who has moderated many forums in the past, I would fully support a staff member here in sinking a thread when it's not constructive in nature.  You definitely should use the forum to voice your opinion, but your post (at least, when I saw it) was really shouty, full of cursing and not civil at all, and because of that, I think it was ok for someone from TS to step in and ask you, for the sake of constructive discussion, to kindly dial it back a notch before continuing.

That being said, I agree 100% that it's really unacceptable that someone at TS would edit your actual words not once, but a couple of times.  I feel like someone should have asked/told you to edit the graphic language out of your post, or locked the thread, or - as a last resort - edited the post themselves and INDICATED on said post that it had been edited by staff for language, but I'm pretty sure they didn't.  (Please, someone correct me if I'm wrong.) To just change what someone's said here without any indication that it's been changed is pretty creepy.  I'm usually one of those people who wholly support TS, but when I saw you say that someone had changed your actual post, I felt pretty creeped out, too.  Your words should be yours.

I sure hope someone from HQ will speak up here and clarify their stance on editing other people's forum posts.

  • I thought you were leaving.

  • Regardless of whether or not Clark is leaving, it's awful that a staff member took it upon themselves to change the words of a post that he wrote.  If a post is that offensive, by all means, delete it, but do not change the words of a player. Besides, we're all adults here - since when is swearing off-limits?

  • I thought Clark was leaving, too. And after reading that expletive filled rant, I"m kind of glad. I thought the swearing was over the top when it was directed at one individual. I don't care who that individual is, that's over the top.

  • I know that many of you are glad after the expletive filled rant---I can fully understand that.  Though you don't have to believe it, I hope you know I'm sorry for that.  Was it rage filled?  yes.  I'll own up to that too---not my best moment.

Did it come after the posts were changed?  yes.  and that is where my rage came from.  The way they were changed was a knock on my character.  Were there a few expletives in the first post?  Yes, but they weren't pointed at ts or anyone else at that time.  They were directed at the my mess.

I am sorry for the latter post.

  • The fact that this game has a 14+ age range should have made you realize that your language was inappropriate. Who cares if there are kids younger than that saying worse things. If their parents find out that there is adult things going on, the glitch team is responsible for any legal action brought upon them.

So yeah, the team editing your title by taking out the cuss words and replacing them with cleaned up versions of the actual words you wanted to use was justified. They are trying to get this game off the ground. They don't need lawsuits blocking their path.

  • In the game forums I moderated for about 5-6 years, the custom was to warn the person and ask them to dial it back and if they would not change the post themselves, then we would take it upon ourselves to do so, but clearly marked that we had changed it and why (or deleted the content and marked that we had done so). I usually signed it if I did it, though I don't feel like that was particularly necessary as it could bring too much focus onto one staff member (never fun). I like that method, because I can understand how people may feel when their posts are changed.

That said, I don't really know how I feel about it here. It's a much different type of game and the community, while not enormous, is much larger.

I feel like the edits I saw though probably made you look better, rather than worse, at least from what I recall.

  • For what it's worth TS made you look better, not worse. Curse words generally show a lack of vocabulary. I don't have any problem with foul language and have been known to curse like a sailor myself but I'm smart enough to know it makes me look less intelligent, not more.

ETA: I also think had you been this sensible in your original post staff would not have changed it even if it had included some curse words. Posting a few angry sentences filled with foul language isn't constructive at all.

  • Clark -I'm sorry all this has happened. I'm not perfect, sometimes I lose my cool too. I think it's good that you've admitted it and apologized.

I've seen other posts here have cussing and never noted them to get changed.

In games and their forums that I've participated in I have seen the following:
staff issues a warning (sometimes by IM -private message or sometimes directly into the thread or both) with a request for the player to delete the profanity and re-word their complaint. If the player doesnt comply shortly then the post is a) deleted entirely or
    B) edited WITH the tag that the post was edited by a staff member.
The ONE time , in another game forum-not here , when I saw player comments edited without any tag in the thread or warning beforehand to the player - it really blew up in their faces.
I'd be mad too : if someone (staff?) edited my comments and I'd never seen that editing done before, and I wasn't warned ahead of time by said staff. Just my opinion.

  • Before you guys criticize Clark for swearing on the forums, you need to know that Stoot has dropped the f-bomb himself in these forums. How can Clark be faulted for acting in the same way as the founder?

That being said, I agree 100% that it's really unacceptable that someone at TS would edit your actual words not once, but a couple of times.  I feel like someone should have asked/told you to edit the graphic language out of your post, or locked the thread, or - as a last resort - edited the post themselves and INDICATED on said post that it had been edited by staff for language, but I'm pretty sure they didn't.  (Please, someone correct me if I'm wrong.) To just change what someone's said here without any indication that it's been changed is pretty creepy.

    I agree completely with this.

  • I really don't like the idea that a poster's comments would be changed by staff without any indication that something had been edited. I think this is a terrible, disruptive and disrespectful policy, and hope that TS policy will be reviewed so that this does not happen again. There are well understood good ways and bad ways of dealing with trouble on forums. Handle trouble better, please.

  • We hear that you don't like it. But we don't really need two threads about the same thing at the same time so I'm locking this one and leaving the other one open.
