Open letter to the person who stole my feeder

Hello person who stole my feeder,

To start, I am not going to use this letter to stamp my feet or scream at you for stealing stuff.

I am annoyed, that's for sure, but I'm not really angry. In fact, I'm mostly puzzled at why you would bother to do it in the first place. If I had left the feeder on a public street, then you'd be within your rights to have removed it. However, the feeder in question was on my home street. It couldn't have been easy for you to get there in the first place.

The feeder you took was one I kept around for those times when I know I'm going to be gone for more than a day. I only put it out there to prevent my piggies from starving before I get back.  I don't know when you made your visit, but when I returned I found the feeder missing  and three piles of meat where my piggies had been. I'm well aware they aren't actually living creatures, but it made me sad. I like logging on and caring for my piggies.

Mainly I'd like to know why. Why steal a feeder -- or anything else for that matter -- in a game like Glitch where money literally pops up everywhere? There are lots of well-documented places where you can find high value quoins, so why steal anything?

Is it because you know me? Have I done something to offend or annoy you? Did we date in high school and now's your chance for revenge?

Is it because you thought it would be funny? I have a pretty broad sense of humor, but I wish you would share the joke with me, because I don't get it.

Are you just mean? Did you steal the feeder so my piggies would starve and my feelings would be hurt? Are you reading this now, saying to yourself "...it's just a #@%$^#& game, get over it!"

Yes, it is just a game. I don't know why you play it, but I play Glitch because it is fun and helps to de-stress me when my life grinds me into the dirt. The people I meet on Glitch brighten my day. Nothing feels as good as being the recipient of a RAK accept being able to give a RAK to someone else. Outside of you, my experience with Glitch has been 110% positive.

So, person who stole my feeder, what's your problem?

  • I think that TS really should change this and make all feeders and collectors lockable. We're never going to able to stop people taking feeders and collectors from home streets, nor are we going to get the message to people that if it's not tied down, someone will take it. TS, could you please change it so that all feeders and collectors are locked down?

  • I am another person who came "Home" to find my Feeder missing and 3 piles of meat.  I also know that they weren't real pigs, that this is a game and I know that people like you mostly think "get over It".  All of our pigs look alike, behave alike and are often underfoot but still, my pigs are special to me.  They have names, I take care of them, they are happy to see me!  I was very sad to see those piles of meat.  I had lost 3 little pigs who brightened my day.  I am very sorry that you do not care.

I have removed all the names from my Street Sign so that players like you cannot visit my Friends from my street.  There is nothing to prevent you from going to other Home Streets and stealing and leaving dead pigs behind but at least you cannot do that from my street.

When the housing is reset, my animals will be in my back yard, accessible only to those who I trust with my key.  My front yard will contain things that I am happy to share with anyone who visits my street.

  • Brib Annie has the right approach, I think: leave your home street bare, and develop your yard.  Leave your animals inside, too.  I understand that a lot of players enjoy providing resources for others, but you should only do that if you really don't mind losing them all.  Every player can create his own resources anyway, given a little time.

  • @Messy Monster, thanks for letting me know...you are now off my friends list and Blocked. Don't need your type when I play.

I for one am going to do my best to make sure No one comes to My home street. I play this game with my family and apparently some that seem nice in game...aren't so much :( Big lesson learned.

  • I had surgery this weekend and just returned home today. I wanted to make sure my pigs didn't die but someone thought it would be cute to take the feeders and my collectors. Talk about being slapped when you are already down.
I curse the person(s) who did it and want them to know all the evil that befalls them is from MY curse!!!
My street should be my land since soon, I will probably have to buy it one way or the other.

  • They only have to have you on their list, which allows them add your name to their signpost. Does not matter if you add them or not.

  • Why do people keep pigs on their street?  I mean, Ur is absolutely crawling with pigs. It's not like people are wandering the streets saying "pigs! pigs!  I need pigs!!" and then suddenly stumbling into your home street saying "oh thank god!  finally!  pigs I can nibble!  I thought all was lost!!"

Nobody needs your weird pig setup.  Keep your pigs in your yard.

  • Mom, please don't listen to Elf, WalruZ or Messy...they are naughty little boys.

I enjoyed your post and the humorous take on the the hooligans.  :-)  Just think of having to make more piggies and feeders as an opportunity to make more iMG.  Or wait in hiding and beat them over the head with our new wood poles.

that's right Messy!! I called you a HOOLIGAN!!

  • why not just keep your pigs in the yard inside your house? It's been clear for a while that street yards are public. This is why the only thing I have on my street is chickens, my feeders and piggies and butterflies are safe inside.
Posted 7 months ago by Hybie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Just curious, Mom, do you not have a tree on your home street? I have a bean tree and two pigs on my home street. The pigs eat from the tree and no feeder is necessary. I agree with other posters that serious resources should be in your private yard, but I like to see a couple of piggies on my home street, and I know the bean tree will keep them fed and happy. Unfortunately it's just a fact of life that, until/unless TS allows us to lock them, any feeders and collectors left on our home streets will inevitably be stolen sooner or later. There will always be a few bad apples in the barrel, but there are so many awsome apples that we should just ignore the rotten ones while not given them the opportunity to grief us. (I suppose as a result of this post, the next time I go on my home street I'll find my piggies gone, but that's not as disheartening as finding piles of meat!)
Posted 7 months ago by Hawkwell Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'll preface this comment by saying all my pigs are in my back yard because I don't want them to die!

However, to all those who say why are your pigs on your street - at present the max size of our back yards is not big enough. It's considerably smaller (in time to walk) than my Alakol yard and that's ignoring that my crop plots are on the roof. I dont want a really wide house (although 3/4 stories might work) but at present my yard is very cramped with crop garden, herb garden, piggies, butterflies, icons, 1x firefly hive and 1x jellisac mound. No trees, no machines...

I guess I can fill the front yard with trees but it would be nice to be able to put some things out there.

Also, some people would like to make their front yards more interesting than just a few trees...

  • In a game where you don't kill anything, don't have to fight (excepting the Rook attacks but I haven't seen him personally since Beta the First), don't have any sort of cutthroat competition or really any sort of angst, I guess this is the best mean people can do?  Petty theft (my butterfly milker) and not tidying up (harvesting home street plots without clearing them) are annoying.  Piggy murder is tragic.  But whoever it is will be bored soon and bail.

  • To quote myself from a while back: It's crappy that people pick up stuff that we have an emotional attachment to, but as one of the picker-uppers said to me, it's fair game. And she's right. I would go so far as to say that some of the takers don't view it as griefing--home streets are a resource to be harvested, just like a tree.

Things will settle. Right now, we know that people will take stuff from our home streets. The best way to keep the takers from taking is to not put out things that can be picked up. With a tree, you can keep a few piggies going quite nicely--provided that people come through and pet/water so the piggses can eat the tree. This approach, though, actually requires that you have a stream of people on your home street. If they're going to come anyway, might as well set it up so that the system works for you as established.

I've given a lot of thought to this over the last couple of months. At first, I didn't want people on my street either. I didn't have names on my signpost so as to prevent the takers from getting to my friends' streets. And then I remembered Jane Jacobs, the Yoda of urban planning. She was the first to use the term "eyes on the street". Her argument? If you're in an area where no one goes, you and your home are less safe than if you're in a busier location. The more people around, the greater the likelihood that you and your things will be safe, because there are more folks there to see what's going on. Think of it like an early concept of neighbourhood watch.

We've had hints that the current system may change, as alluded to by others in this thread. At present, stuff on our streets will be taken regardless. So let's work with that. Let's lose the feeders and collectors, park our piggies by a tree, and let the streams of people coming through keep that tree in a state that the piggies can use it. A small adjustment, but do-able. Possible. If it's troubling to lose your things, take the actions you have at your disposal to prevent it.

  • I agree that the size of the back yard is not as expansive as the front yard which is why my pigs are out front.  Maybe when housing is finalized the back yard can be made a bit larger.  Maybe our personal Greeters can do something about theft.  Whatever the case, my pigs will be better off one way or another when my Home Street is reset.

Having a tree convenient for the pigs is a good idea.  I tried to plant one where the pigs are but I could not fit it in even though there was more space for it than two trees take up at my old house.  I look forward to maybe planting several trees out front.  I have 5 trees in the small yard of my Bortola home.  I had pigs inside my Forest home when I first began playing a year ago.  It was a nighmare, pigs constantly underfoot and eating anything and everything - lol!  I had to ask a Dev to move them to the yard for me.  Since then - NO pigs in the house!  The chickens were in there too.  Because the yard had no fence I thought they would wander off if I put them in the yard.  I was, after all, a Newb and knew no better.

  • I had no idea this little statement would generate so much wordage! First I want to thank Simplin and Loupin for their generous gift of new feeders & feed. I was really touched. Thank you.

Second, just reading through the posts makes me feel a little sad for a number of reasons. It is obvious that most people who play Glitch consider it to be a "safe zone" and treasure the generosity and friendliness of other players. This is why I find it difficult to understand why a player would purposefully go against the culture in order to get their kicks.

For those who feel I ought to have known better or should keep my piggies in the backyard, my only response is I always make the assumption -- foolish or not -- that people are good.

For those who expressed delight in the act of theft, I say: Just as each player has the right to enter a home street and use or take what is there, each player also has the right to NOT do those things. That is, we all have free will. How are you using yours?

    It's just a goddamn feeder.
Posted 7 months ago by Volkov Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Volkov -- I agree. The object in question is "just a feeder," but that isn't why I wrote the letter.

My question is WHY? Why do it? Carrying off someone else's property in Glitch is equal to taking candy at a bank IRL. It is not stealing because the candy is there to be consumed, but does that mean you should empty the candy jar every time you go in?

It seems obvious to me that the act of taking someone else's stuff -- aka "stealing" or "liberating" -- fulfills some need for the person who does it. I want to know what that need it.

  • Maybe they just wanted a quick currant.
    Or just like taking stuff.
Posted 7 months ago by Volkov Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I have even removed my tree and tree plot from my home street because people kept poisoning it. Now, my street only has items that respawn on it. So, putting a tree on your home street to feed the piggies doesn't always work either. I keep all animals, feeders, crops, herbs, trees and such in my back yard.

  • MoM--per my post above, the person I encountered on my street said she "made a living" by taking and selling stuff from home streets. She wasn't doing it with a goal of upsetting people; she was doing it because the stuff was there and takeable. Perhaps there are some that do it to get a rise out of others, and yes there's been some deliberate targeting of individuals, but chances are that some are just doing it because it's easy currants. It wasn't malice-driben on the part of the person I met; she was taking advantage of the game mechanics to play in a way that the current mechanics permit. Our streets were no different than any other resource you find in the world--she viewed them as akin to a rock or tree or piggy and simply didn't care that there were people and emotions behind her windfalls.

So there's no grand reason here; it's likely just someone that plays in a way we might not like and would not play ourselves.

  • Mom4.5, I'm sorry you were upset but have you ever played an MMO before?  There is no MMO without griefers.  Come here upset and asking "why did you do that" and you have just provided exactly the reaction they were looking for.  The answer is that the player was deliberately trying to upset you because they are either 1) lacking in normal empathy or 2) have such a miserable life that having power over a stranger in an MMO makes them feel better.  It sucks but it's part of playing an MMO.

It is naive to believe that any player who takes stuff from home streets doesn't know it's griefing.  Voluptua describes a lack-of-empathy griefer in her post above.

You have to use the protection that's built into the game to keep your stuff safe, just like you lock your door at night to prevent real-life "griefers".  Your home street is basically considered public, and the devs have said so repeatedly.  Your piggies and feeders need to go in the backyard if it bothers you to lose them.

  • I love that thread.  I have a further wrinkle to it now.  Referring to my own recent experience:

When you kill my tree, steal all the instructional notes, and leave my large public herb garden a mess, you're missing out on something.  When I clean these things up, I'm the one who earns the most imagination.  I'm the one who gets 10 iMG for every patch hoed, 4 iMG for every patch watered, and 4 iMG for every patch planted.  I'm the one who gets the iMG bonus of seasoning a bean, planting it and petting it back to health.  If I had a piggy feeder on my street, I'm the one who'd get the benefit of crafting a new one.

So, if you take these things because you need them, that's cool.  You could benefit further be replacing them, but that's your prerogative.

If you take these things to grief me, so freakin' what?

  • To people who like to take collectors:
Just because it's not against Terms of Service doesn't mean that it's cool to.
To people who complain about collectors and feeders being stolen:
So you put them out there, and then they get taken. Put out a few more, and they get taken again. But I'm wondering this: Why do you guys keep putting out there if you know they are going to get taken? You have to realize that there are people who will pick up anything that isn't tied down to a stake. The reason you're complaining is because people are taking the feeders and collectors that you left there that aren't nailed doen with a stake and rope. You have to learn from your mistakes. If they keep on getting taken, stop putting them out there. Until our feeders and collectors come with ropes and stakes, stop putting out more theif bait and keep feeders and collectors in your back yard. To feed your piggies, drop some grain on the ground and watch them all go, "NOMNOMNOMNOMNOM!" If you stop putting them out there, they'll stop getting stolen.
