Glitch on a t-shirt

Since I seem to memorialize things that are special to me on t-shirts (either purchased or decorated), I thought I would start a thread on potential Glitch t's.   Mentioned elsewhere (e.g. swag thread), and close to my heart are my two faves (see below) but tell me what you would like to see on a Glitch t-shirt.

Favorite:  Caress, Consider, Contemplate Glitch
2nd fave:  jujus stole my orb

  • I have a big blown up printout of a chickie in my room, and I would SO not mind having that on a T-shirt.

  • I would also like Sheepy's art on a tshirt. If we can figure out how not to get sued....
Posted 18 months ago by Gloopy Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Is Sheepy really litigious? Surely not, with a name like Sheepy.
Posted 18 months ago by Nanookie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • LOL. No, I mean if the Life is Good people wouldn't sue us, we'd make up some shirts. :)

  • I believe it was "Your mother was a pork fondler, and your father smelt of whortleberries." You came up with it yourself Nanookie :P

  • Life is Good can't sue us, it's parody. All we'd need is permission from TS. :)

That, and I'd need to redraw them at higher res (which I'm happy to do).

  • if the shirts were being sold, they very well could sue if they wanted to - I've heard it said that fair use is ultimately the right to a legal defense, rather than something that will prevent a lawsuit.
Posted 17 months ago by katlazam Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Quite true, katlazam, but the fashion industry is far less litigious than the media.
Posted 17 months ago by Sheepy Subscriber! | Permalink
  • yes but the media is sooooo litigious that that's not saying much, unfortunately. :)

i adored the art too, but it's naive to say that they *can't* sue you. a couple of quick google searches show that the company has previously gone after parodies of their trademark, and that fair use as a defense against a trademark claim is not often a successful strategy.

sure, the probability that this would lead to actual trouble is probably fairly small, but to be realistic, it would be good to seriously consider the potential risk before money starts to change hands.

  • I believe most of those parodies were much closer to their style of artwork, as well as targeting similar demographics. If TS were to use the graphic as one of many swag designs on its website, it would be quite different from, e.g., "Life is Crap"'s full line of retail products. If, as a fan with permission, I made a Zazzle site explicitly stating a lack of profits (and I'd never sell fanart at a profit to myself) and had permission from TS, the threat potential is even more greatly lessened.

Absolutely, it's naive to assume it's impossible to be sued. But I'm fairly confident that something on this scale wouldn't inspire worse than a cease and desist letter. I hit IP rights walls all the damn time in my work, and I'd personally be willing to assume that risk if TinySpeck were to give me permission to do so.

That said, "Glitch Makes the Ur Go Round" has no such risk associated with it.

  • fair enough, sheepy, i wasn't trying to convince you that you would definitely be hit with a big ole' lawsuit from making a few shirts available, but rather just giving my gut reaction to the "life is good can't sue us" comment... after all, never say never :)

  • Crab shirts for all!

Someone did put up a cafepress.com site or similar, without permission, and I believe it was removed soon after TS caught wind of it.  I'm sure they'll come up with official gear at some point... Kukubee has lots of experience with this. :)

  • This feels like the perfect opportunity for TS to riff on the Threadless model for t-shirts and schwag. Keep merchandise in the family but keep it fan driven.

  • Oh, i so want some glitchian merch.

    Come oooooon, tiny speck!
Just one little hoody or tshirt to mooch about the neighbourhood in.
It would make the b'tween test waits so much cozier...

And I promise to mooch in Yaletown now and again.
