Lagging

Copied from response I entered on another post- thought it might be helpful to some:

Hey guys, re: lag issue-
Sometimes refreshing cures it at times I suspect the server might be running heavy.
Other times, tho, I can feel how hot my laptop's grafix proc'r is getting when I run around fast for too long- try this: I have used a can of compressed air and blown the COLD jet into the cooling vents (short little bursts over time, take it easy) and found it helps to cool down the hot stuff by removing the heat energy, as well as clearing the vent grates to increase cooling air thru-flow.
I run Vista w/ only 1GB RAM, and free breathing coolant air makes a difference.

Anyone else have any tips? This seems to be an issue to many at some time or another, and takes away from the fun of the game when it happens.

  • Once or twice flash and glitch have somehow between them decided to do a stress test on my CPUs.  Are they solving protein-folding problems, looking for evidence of ETs?  Whatever it is, I terminate with extreme prejudice.  I wouldn't try to keep playing through it if restarting everything doesn't help; that's evidence that something's wrong somewhere, and I've Had a laptoP that ran hot turned into a brick by a fried nvidia card not too long ago.

(edit to add: defective card, not par for the course)

  • Good lord, everyone needs more ram than that. I suggest 4 at the very least. I'm running 7 right now and will go up to more when I get more money.

  • I play glitch wirelessly, and the speed of the access point connection and it's visibility are key to the presence of lag.

  • I use a Mac & it generally Flash pegs a CPU (sometimes both) every time it runs. (Admittedly my computer is over 2 yrs old.) To help, I make sure I have most everything else on my computer closed. (esp. CPU hogs like iTunes) I run Glitch in a dedicated browser with only Glitch Wiki or the Forums open. When it really seems to be going nutso, a hard refresh clears up the worst of it. That said, the last two days it's been chugging especially hard. Not sure what changed.

  • I got my laptop right when Vista first came out so that tells you how long ago that was. Back then, 1GB was widely considered plenty. I also run wirelessly, but as I said, it seems to act up most when the grafix card is hot, at least in my case. That's where the canned air comes in, if I don't wanna refresh or leave just yet.
