So what else do you play?

I was just super curious- what other games do you guys play? MMOs? Other computer games?

  • A very glitch-like game (not MMO though) is an indie game called Aquaria. I highly recommend it. It's on steam as well.

I adored VMK!!!   Tried VFK, but it never matched up, imo.

Browser tool bar game you play as you surf the net. Lay mines to blow up in people's faces, or lay spiders to protect the next weary traveller. You choose how you want to play. Very leisurely game. Is just getting started. Built from scratch :)

Ohyes. And Kingdom of Loathing (altho I haven't played in a while)

  • Wizard101
    A Mystical Land (beta)
Faunasphere from the beta until it closed.
    Ankhet
    Kingdom of Loathing
Everything Spiderweb ever produced, and hte player-produced Blades of Exile series.

  • I was a VMK junkie too, but SmallWorlds is the only other MMO I'm playing right now. My favorite part is the Missions, which are like quests (there are official missions, but players can create missions too). There's some amazing creativity in some of the player-created missions.

  • Glitch is my first MMO. Aside from that, I'll be on Pottermore once the beta starts (I'm DreamCrimson 2). I reeeeally want to start some kind of club or forum on Pottermore for all of us Glitchens playing over there - I think there's going to be a good number of us. We can foster a positive community spirit or, at the very least, be as awesome over there as we all are here.

I do a lot of forum-based post-by-post RPGs, where you write posts and reply with other folks. I've been doing that for years, close to 7 or 8 actually. I love it because as a "professional student" it's helped me gain confidence in my writing skills, and I've also made a lot of lifelong friends through it. My main genres are science-fiction, fantasy, and horror. I'm currently on an X-men board (anticipating a promotion to administrator within the next week or so) and a fantasy slash board based in modern-day California.

I played Aquaria a few years ago when it was beta, only had a few levels back then but it was a huge download, never went back bcuz I figured once it was complete that would just tear up my puter. I also thought the game play was slow...not as slow as a static game like evony, but she swims slow, right? Cool underwater artwork though.

  • Aside from an extensive collection of DS games (favourites are Ace Attorney, Professor Layton, and Pokemon), I play Echo Bazaar. Used to play Kingdom of Loathing, too.

  • Hmmm I hate when people abbreviate games ... even I spelled out World of Warcraft (WoW) for the unknowning ... soooooooo what is VFK or VMK or  DM or P&P?  I figured out D&D is Dungeon and Dragons ... sorry I might be thirty something, and have played MMORPGs for half of forever, but I am old school, I still spell out my words.  It's a kindness I show to my readers.
    Thanks!
(And I might try some that's being listed, like I said, I'm looking for something to fill my time, kind of like World of Warcraft, just not as intense.)

Edit to add : @Josiah, A Mystial Land, I can in one sitting, create a character, play through the tutorial, and when I hit the first town, if I get in that first time, I can never get in again.  How sad is that?  I'd be playing that game right now otherwise ... but I'm tired of doing the tutorial over and over ... LOL.

  • I have been hooked, on and off, on the IronRealms MUDs* (ironrealms.com).  The roleplay and the lore tend to reel me in, but some of the cut-throat, combat-centric, gamer types ALWAYS end up turning me off.  I'll play for a few months, become really invested in my character's backstory and goals, and then eventually end up jaded because it's the PvP and the game mechanics that everyone's really crazy about.  Lusternia, in particular, has broken my heart on several occasions (why do I keep going back?).

Thanks to Glitch, though, I may finally be free of that hussy.

    --

    * A MUD is a "Multi-User Dungeon".   A bit of a precursor to modern MMOs, hailing from the days when we had computer games, but no graphics.
Posted 16 months ago by Kipple Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Kipple : As long as they don't introduce PVP in this game, we should be fine ... I was the same with World of Warcraft, as you were with IronRealms, I love my characters and their stories, I hated the PVPness (even in a nonPVP realm) and the aggressiveness of the attitudes that if you didn't, you weren't worth playing with.  Say what? Lol ...

Anyways, hmm, I might check it out even so ...

  • Gyah!  PvP in Glitch!  I don't know if I'm emotionally equipped to handle that.

Wut, u don't have the elite, rook-drop-only Fruit Changer of Pot socketed with five +1s to awesomeness? Lol, ur terribad!

  • I looked up a few titles mentioned here. Aquaria looks beautiful, but is it the kind of game you can progress in without a guide?

I also came across Mabinogi, a Korean anime-style game based on Welsh mythology. It looks intriguing. Does anyone have experience with it?

I also came across a couple beautiful sidescrollers: Trine and Braid, in case anyone's interested.
Posted 16 months ago by Widdershins Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Widdershins:  Mabinogi can be a real gem.  The character customization options are almost up there with Glitch - so many hair styles, colors and goofy little facial features to mix and match.  Lots to craft, explore, collect, grow, and -- yes -- kill (the latter, though, can often be done in unique and challenging ways).  Characters age and can gain or lose weight based upon their choices and eating habits.

One of the things I found really endearing was the fact that none of the game's items or clothing had a real "default color".  Every game day at midnight, everything in the shops would change.  If I wanted a new robe or dagger, and I didn't like the current selection of lime green or pale salmon, all I had to do was walk away for about forty-five minutes then check back - maybe I'd get lucky, find a nice, earthy maroon or shiny silver.  I became very obsessed, for a while, collecting an all-ochre wardrobe with matching shield and mace.

But, the community can be iffy.  Lots of kids, lots of folk who will tell you how to play when they perceive that you're "doing it wrong".  There is a prevailing notion that you should probably spend x amount of dollars per month in the "cash shop" just to be "any good" ...

Some of it is very familiar stuff for those walking away from standard MMOs.
Posted 16 months ago by Kipple Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Oh!  Speaking of side scrollers!  If you dig steampunk, and the amalgamated vibes of Metroid and Castlevania, you might want to try Remnants of Skystone on Kongregate.  I've reached a point in the game where my lack of platformer skills has me stuck, but for those of you who are good at this sort of thing, it's a real blast!

Customizable characters.  Whimsically creepy alien bugs to blow up.  A bit of snarkiness here and there.

I'm almost tempted to go back and try again, what with the momentary lack of Glitch and all.

(I apologize for the double-post, but Remnants of Skystone warranted its own personal space, far away from Mabinogi.  I really do hope you understand.)

  • Ahhh, but I'm not hardcore anything, I'm casual play all the way.  I like to play for the fun, and for the story line.  I don't want to have to stress to be on at a certain, with certain people, for a certain regen that may or may not be certain to be there LOL oh my that's how you get stressed playing on your computer!  No, I have enough stress in my own daily real life, thanks, I come here to relax and get away from it!

So I'll look into the casual games ... I've played a few the last few years but none stuck to me ... the one I do miss is my initiation unto MMORPG, Rubies of Evantide (you can't play anymore, they did away with it!) now that's talking some years ago! I loved that game, made some very good friends (one who supplied me with my original World of Warcraft game and my first 60 days!) ... oh to sometimes go back in time before everything became so ... so ... oh I don't know what the word is I am looking for it's 3 am my time lol ... but I'm sure you get my drift!

Ok sorry to rant lol ... off to bed I go ... for the second time tonight ...

  • Actually, i play a game called Pixie Hollow.  Yes its a Disney game, but there is no battling, just fairies and sparrowmen.  You can create three characters.  Spend time harvesting items (rose petals, honeycombs, acorns, blueberries, etc.) which you can use to buy clothing, house items & furniture.  You can choose an animal friend that flies around with you that you feed and keep happy/healthy.  There is clothing and accessory tailoring, tinkering of furniture and household items, you can bake cookies, have parties and do quests.  There are many mini games where you earn harvest items.  Multiple servers to choose from so I can play in a quiet or crowded atmosphere.  It's very soothing.  I especially like the wardrobe, so many options plus you can use your bottles of dye to change the color of any clothing, accessory or furniture.  Oh yeah you have a house that you can decorate.  Highly recommend it for those who want something simple, pleasant, creative and great graphics.

  • I've been watching Youtubes of Minecraft today; the survival mode looks like tons of fun! I can see where some former Faunasphere players might enjoy the Classic mode. I, however, do not excel in building, so I'm not playing Minecraft at the moment. Still, it's hugely popular!

I was playing Wizard 101 before Glitch finally sent me an invitation. Having reached the level cap and started a second account so I could play all the classes, I found the sheer opulence of buyable stuff to be too compelling, to the point of being off-putting. I didn't like being manipulated to buy huge amounts of cash purchases, and so here I am.

But being homeless in the game world between Glitch tests, I'm casting about, trying other games. I think this is a bit dangerous to Glitch loyalty. Perhaps they should offer minigames to play between tests, which could win us ingame items. That would keep us playing Glitch even when the game is down, rather than looking elsewhere.

  • LotRO! That's The Lord of the Rings Online to the uninitiated.

Short of that I bounce around to different MMOs, since many have gone free2play. Battlestar Galactica comes to mind. I also play Team Fortress 2 and Natural Selection 2.

Seeing all these happy little 'glitchens' running around makes me want to bloody up and dismember fake virtual monsters all the more... I can't wait

  • For online games, it's really only Glitch, and Tinkatolli. My cousin got me in to Minecraft, which is good for when Glitch isn't open. Not a big survival person though, I prefer building. (as you may be able to tell, I am NOT a hardcore gamer, haha)

  • Minecraft!  I set up a baby server on a spare laptop so me and my son can play together--he's a complete fiend for it, but he's the same way about Lego IRL, so I am not surprised.  I usually switch between peaceful and normal...like Mocha, I like to build and the days are so short...the mobs get to be more of a PITA.  But I did build a drowning trap for mobs next to my house and watching it trap and drown zombies, creepers and skeletons was very gratifying indeed.

I wish I could forget everything about Machinarium so I could go back and play that all over again.

@widdershins: My daughter and her BFF played Mabinogi for a few years, were crazy about it.

a PC game (series) that I loved was The Longest Journey and Dreamfall.  It wasn't so much the gameplay that was memorable but the writing and the storyline stuck with me like reading a really good novel.  Ragnar Tørnquist is developing an MMO right now, am very interested to try it out.

Also...cannot wait until I can play thatgamecompany's newest game "Journey"!

  • Grinding out Guildwars titles, waiting for Guildwars II to show up.    Likely I won't even play it though since Glitch will be released before GW2 will :)

Desperatly looking for something else to play while Glitch is down.   Something MMO, but "casual gameplay" friendly, as I have to take lots of breaks to look busy at work and/or actually pretend to be a good father/husband while at home :)
Posted 16 months ago by Vicereine Linnæa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm a PC gamer and love all types of games. MMO-wise, I have been playing Eve Online most recently, but am taking a break from that. I would say "I Quit Eve Online" except that I seem to keep going back to it on and off ever since it launched in 2003.

There are a lot of analogues between Eve and Glitch, actually. Surprisingly many! Especially surprising when you consider that Eve takes itself very seriously; is egregiously unforgiving; and has a self-destructively steep learning curve that's difficult to describe, unless you have ever recovered from substance abuse addiction. Contrast that with Glitch, which is easy to get into, very friendly, and downright goofy.

But the play spaces are similar, and some of the crafting mechanics as well. Also, the overall community is very fully engaged in the progression of the game world, and there is a distinct sense that every participant has a voice, should he or she choose to use it. Which is really pretty dope. :O
Posted 16 months ago by naitPee Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yeah, Eve did a whole lot of things right.  The one thing that really turned me off is that I never felt like I had a "ME" in the game.  My name attached to whatever ship I'm flying at the moment isn't the same thing as having a full fledged avatar.

When I write it out, it sounds kind of dumb.  But hey <shrug>
Posted 16 months ago by Vicereine Linnæa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Linnaea hell yeah d00d i feel you. HOWEVER:

Eve Online released a series of udpates this year toward its "Incarna" program. You can now see yourself, as fully-rendered avatar, walking around in stations. I guess the goal is that you'll eventually be able to do the same in other environments.

Frankly, though, it ruined the game for me. The avatar I saw walking around did not fit my picture of Me, gender-and-ethnicity-bended though I knew I was. It just wasn't the character I'd built over several years. She didn't walk how I thought she should (would) walk, I guess.

So one big thing Glitch is doing right is keeping things low on the detail and high on the personality. In my opinion, anyway!

  • @ Jellyfish - is it okay to add you as a friend in Steam? I usually play Team Fortress 2 there.

@ Thee Robot Creator - Steam had a discount on Machinarium other day, so I bought it too. Also finished it - had 6h of fun :)

@ Nanookie - I loved the Longest Journey games back when they came out. Too bad that there wasn't more from those developers. But the author of the series is doing new MMO at the moment called The Secret World - it will be sandbox, no levels etc.

I have played many mmo's over the years - I usually try new games but get tired very soon.
They just don't do games like Ultima Online anymore! I mean, there aren't good sandbox mmos out there.

So now I wait for Diablo III and The Secret World, and of course the next Glitch session :)
In meantime, if anybody wants to play TF2 on Steam, you can add me - the link is in my profile.

I'm not much of a consolle player, although I do enjoy the Wii when friends are over.
