Purpose of the Toolbox?

Hello everyone.

I just bought a Toolbox for 2500 and was quite disappointed when i saw its storage capacity (16) It is the same than a big bag, which can store tools too but only costs 1999 with 16 slots. Except from the shiny skin, i dont see why the toolbox should be there if its not increased storage capacity for tools vs other containers? Or am I missing a pont :)?

Greetings

  • The extra 501 currants is for the "look", I guess.

    But I'm just guessing, so...

  • There's another thread going where they suggest that it should be more like WoW, where "specialized" bags have restrictions on what they can hold -- but they can hold A LOT MORE of it than regular, non-restricted bags. This should certainly be the case with the toolboxes, if not some other containers as well.

  • I believe the extra cost is because you can only put tools in a toolbox. It's very good to be able to keep the tools separate without fruit and meat etc overflowing and getting mixed up.

  • Madrogan, you can achieve the same when you keep a simple Bag full of Tools. Other stuff wont get into it until you remove a tool ;)

I agree with the Warcraft System and i admit that I was expecting that mechanism at the start: Limitations on what u can put into them but alot more space than a regular Bag of comparable price.

  • Heh! Not if you are ocd enough and you need to keep your cooking stuff seperate from the mining etc stuff XD

  • My opinion:

    1) The specialized bags should be continually expanded to be able to hold all of the category's items. For example, if more tools are made beyond 16, then the toolbox would be expanded to fit all of them.

    2) The specialized bags should fit *INSIDE* regular bags. That would be their biggest advantage, no matter how many items were in the category.

Edited to add: If #1 was implemented, there would be no need for #2.

  • This item is certainly in need of a fix: Can do less than a general bag and is more expensive by 25%.

Option 1: Increase the capacity to hold 24 tools or more - becoming cost effective over a bag when full

Option 2: Decrease the cost to something less than 2000 -

Option 3: Provide a durability bonus to tools - tools kept in a toolbox take less wear from use or are gradually repaired over time when in the box

  • I think this Glitch strategy - you can only hold so much, so you have to make decisions.  You can't have everything.

I happen to like my toolbox, and once you are at a certain income level, it isn't worth quibbling over the price.

  • I am with Jewel Stoned. I love my tool box because I know just where to go to get my tools. Even well organized bags get jumbled up sometimes. So my tool box, my elemental pouch and my spice box help keep me sorted. I am even thinking of two tool boxes, one for cooking and one for other as madragoran indicates since there are many more than 16 tools already.

A 500c diference at this point in the game is not very meaningful to me.

You always have the choice to use bags - nothing requires you to purchase a tool box.

  • +1 for a small durability bonus

  • The toolbox forces organization.  If you don't have a knack for inventory organizing, 500c is a small price to pay for this.

  • Like some have said, you will get to a point in game that an extra 500c won't matter.

Although I do concur that the only thing you're paying is the looks, personally I use a regular big bag.

  • The visual organization alone is worth the extra 500 or so currants IMO. It let's me know exactly where my tools are.

  • It's annoying that tools don't automatically go into the toolbox - like spices and compounds go into their respective boxes

  • Toolboxes are great, I keep two in the front two slots of my pack to pick up any tools that I pick up. One toolbox is for handtools and mining tools and the other is for mostly cooking implements. By keeping them in the front slots they are quick to access and also automatically get any tools I pick up, as items go to the first slot available, left to right.

  • I really, really love the toolboxes. They look great when placed on the floor - and I can organize my inventory! I have two toolboxes, one for the items with a life bar - the other holds the cooking stuff, my focusing orb ... beaker and so on!
I buy different coloured bags for different purposes. It may be compulsive, but hey ... that's how I glitch.

  • I too was disappointed when I bought the tool box. Had I known that it was a restricted bigger bag, I would've just bought a regular bigger bag and named it "Tool Box."
Since my tool box isn't full, I'm losing out on inventory space.
Oh and for those that like the tool box for the skin, they have various colors of bigger bags if you're like me and color code things.
    Tool box needs a change.

  • I'm with you Erine. I love the toolboxes and separate my kitchen from my gardening/weardownable tools into two.

Though I do agree, toolboxes could be improved to be more worth the cost in the beginning when 500c may be more of an issue.

  • +1 for either the slightly increased capacity OR for a durability bonus to tools placed within.  Both or either of those would be awesome.

  • The toolbox is for tools. *trollface*

  • Toolbox blows.  I've never had a problem keeping things in order in my array of 16 slot bags.  Never ever ever ever ever.

  • I love the idea of having a higher resistance for tools in the toolbox. I have one to keep my OCD self satisfied, but it would be cool to make the toolbox give a slight durability to the tools and maybe it could be craftable with high level tinkering.

That would give more reason to learn tinkering and more reason for player cooperation. I really think there needs to be more specialization with the skill trees so players can work together and not everything is vendor-able.

Tl;dr: toolboxes should be craftable (if not already) from tinkering V and should give a small tool durability for using it.

Lets face it, irl if I carry tools in a purse they will break much easier than if I carry them in a tool case

  • having already bought 2 toolboxes and read this thread...i feel kinda stupid :(
Posted 14 months ago by Aayla Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Aayla, don't feel stupid. It's not as though it's blatantly clear in the game that toolboxes aren't that special. That's actually part of the problem -- that they're created for a specific purpose but that it actually doesn't do much to improve the user experience. It would make more sense if they provided some benefit other than appealing to super-organized individuals.

  • I am on the pro tool box side of this discussion.  I'm about to purchase my third toolbox and I already have more bags than I have slots.  I absolutely rely on the different look of the tool box to find my tools quickly.

@Marvingy - I have two toolboxes, a red one and a silver one and at least one of each bag large and small.  Most of the larger bags I have two of, but I just gave one of them away yesterday.  So your advice to buy different colored bags won't help me.

If you think you're losing space by having a toolbox in your inventory, buy some butterfly massage lotion and stick it in those empty slots.

Or don't buy one until you have enough tools to fill it up.

If you don't want to purchase a tool box because it's too expensive for your budget, then don't.

But please don't try to alter or take away mine.

    Thanks.  :-D

  • @Reba: has anyone suggested that the toolbox be taken away or altered negatively?

Haven't all the suggestions been "buffs" (in the parlance of our times)?
Posted 14 months ago by Zedric Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm fine with toolboxes not giving extra space or increased durability, but it is silly that tools don't automatically go into them.

  • I have two toolboxes.  They sit in the first two slots.  I don't want other stuff that accumulates landing in the toolboxes.  I carry about that many tools, including spares etc.  So I figure it was worth the investment to pay a little more for the storage, because other stuff won't fall in the toolbox and get lost.  And they're toolboxes, so my tools go in them.  It just made sense to me.  The price difference is hardly anything.
