Black screen

I have been playing glitch for a couple of days now on my laptop, and have had no problems at all, until Friday night. I went to join world, and all I got was a black screen. I still had sound, but that's it. I re-booted the browser, re-booted the computer, re-installed flash, twice, checked my firewall settings, turned the firewall OFF, still just a black screen. The only thing that I know of that changed on my computer from Thursday to Friday was some Microsoft updates installed. Could this be the culprit, and if so, how do I find out and fix it? This is so frustrating! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ETA: I also went through the checklist in the FAQs, including the self-diagnostic tool, which indicated that everything should be working properly. I am using Firefox, but switched to IE to see if it would work, it didn't.

  • Empty your flash cache at "C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects"

  • I have gone to C:\, there is no Documents and Settings there. I'm on Windows 7, 64, if that makes a difference.

ETA: I have done a search for what you suggested, I haven't been able to find Macromedia, Flash Player, or anything else listed in that address you gave me. And yes, I do have the latest version of Flash installed on the computer. The other browser-based Flash games our family plays are all working just fine, it is only Glitch that we are having problems with. Very aggravating.

ETA #2: I found where to delete the Cache for Flash, it did not work. Thanks anyway for the suggestion.

  • You can also delete Flash cache from this settings page. I don't know if that will solve your problem for you, however. Microsoft updates? Don't really know if that's the cause for you. A couple other things to try:

Another browser: Does it happen in one, or all of them? It seems you were using Firefox with the latest load- try using Firefox in Safe Mode
Toolbars: Do you use any? If so, turn them off and see what happens. (One of our players noticed the StumbleUpon toolbar caused a lot of problems loading the game, and I was able to replicate that experience.)

  • Well, as I said before, I found where to delete the cache for Flash, and it did not help. I also stated in my original post that I tried using Internet Explorer when Firefox did not work, and got the same results, a black screen. I am not using any toolbars, like StumbleUpon, and the only change that occurred on my computer between Thursday, when the game worked perfectly, and Friday, when I got the black screen, was the Microsoft update installs. Firefox Safe Mode also did not work, but thanks for the suggestion. I have to assume that something on my computer got reconfigured when the Microsoft updates installed, and for some reason it is now blocking the video of Glitch. The most puzzling aspect of all of this is that nothing else seems to be affected. Every program, including games that use Flash, are working fine, no problems at all. Only Glitch seems to be affected. Very odd.

I will continue to try to figure this problem out, and if I come up with a solution, I will be sure to post it here. Thank you kevbob and Macs for your suggestions. I really appreciate you both taking the time to try and help me with this. Good news is, the game still works on my computer at work, so I can still play it a little, during breaks and such, so I'm not completely cut off. Thanks again, guys!

  • Well, I finally figured it out. My video card driver needed to be updated. Boy, did I feel like an idiot for not thinking of that first. It was, after all, the video portion of the game that wasn't working. Facepalm! Anyway, it's all good now, so.... HOORAY
