Potion economy

Super short summary/protip for glitchen:

  According to the auction prices:

Glitchen - For those bog folk out there: You can get more money in auction if you don't bother making potions and you sell the ingredients instead.  The more work you do refining your ingredients, the less you make.  Herbs are very expensive.

Tiny Speck - Is this really the goal?  Ingredients costing more than the finished good?

Side note:

Tiny Speck - Also, please please please, don't force us to push the "try it" button for these time bound quests.  Can't you just start counting as we go and reset when appropriate?  I was up late at night, didn't realize I needed to push that button, and wound up spending around 60,000 currants having to do two full rounds of 7 potions each.  Did this before I realized the cheaper way of buying first level ingredients haha  Although I honestly was happy to finally need money for something! :)  This was the first thing in a long time that required a chunk of currants.  I wish there was more out there like that, making money is kind of empty without a spending goal.

More info:

I realize auction prices fluctuate, I used the lowest current value for each item in the example below as of typing this up right before this post.  I just took the first 4 items from the cauldron wiki page and gave you prices.  In every case, purchasing the potion costs less, (WAY less usually) than creating it with ingredients if you have to purchase those ingredients.  Only in one case for these 4 does it actually cost less to create one of those first level ingredients instead of just buying those as well.  Also please keep in mind it's actually much more expensive than I mention down there because you can't usually buy the exact amount of item you need either.

Am I like missing an important Glitch philosophy here and currants don't really matter to anyone and it's really about just having fun making potions or something?  They certainly don't really matter to me anymore since they are so easy to make and not so much to buy with them.

I wish I could bold this, but the perfect example is Amourous philtre - 100c to buy one or ~3,500c to make one?  That's just crazy!  Or am I?  Hope I'm not being completely ignorant of some important Glitch thing here, please let me know if I am!  I'm prohibited from planting herbs where I live (dislike).  I realize community herb gardens on the other side of the subway/fertilizer exist, so yes that is an option.  I just didn't want to go that route.

Something to think about.  Let me know if this makes sense or is totally off base.

  • You are basing your analysis on the period right after the new Potion Skills have been learned by a lot of people.  People make the potions required by the quests and then dump them in the Auction to get rid of them, if the potion doesn't do anything they find interesting.  Wait awhile for the prices to settle.  People aren't creating potions to 'sell for a loss.'  They are dumping junk in the auction that they don't want.

  • There are lots of people looking to make potions for themselves.  As long as potion making, not just the potions themselves, is in vogue, there will be more demand for the components than for the actual product.

The upside down herb market, or at minimum the housing issues that help create it, will cease to be so glaring some time next year.

  • Meh I see no indecation this is a tempeary price problem. Many times people in mmos will say oh this item is need for a new quest or feature don't worry the price will go down. In general I find this to be false once the price is up it doesn't always go down.
