more "drop based" tools

okay, so pretty much every item in the game is "droppable", but what i mean is "items that do stuff when in their dropped state".

so i was trying to figure out what a jellisack was good for, and so i dropped it on the ground just because. and it looked pretty damn good, that little pile of goo. it made be think that a lot of items have really great artwork when in their dropped state.

i was also thinking that the crystallizer and the crystal it produced seemed too much like smelter and ingot or admixer and powder or pretty much any "tool that takes ingredients in the form of a recipe and spits out an item"

i'd like more items like the meat colector, butterfly milker and feeder. things that could be used in public spaces though. these things look interesting and add some extra visual variation to the glitch landscape.

even if to avoid "litter" these things merely temporarily deploy while in use and then don't hang around if the player leaves the street, that'd be cool .. although figuring out a way for players to semi-permanently add visual embellishment by way of dropped tools would be great. maybe these tools would decay and then disappear over time or there could be a per street cap on the things or some combination of both.

they don't even have to be typical "tools" either.

flowers that go away over time, dropped in place to decorate levels and maybe provide an ambient mood boost would be wonderful.

  • and if you got different results from dropping the thing from different heights.

  • well, possibly.

i was thinking more like things would sit there doing stuff, but the actual "drop" verb could have an effect too i suppose.

  • One item I`ve seen deployed in Scotland is a midgie collector. What if there was a Firefly attractor, used to encourage fireflies in a street? Or a tool to change local weather conditions, some sort of giant air-conditioning unit?

  • +1 for more ways to do things with items - including dropping.

  • an air conditioning unit that would change weather conditions is just the sort of thing i'm thinking about.

i think it'd be technically impossible to actually change the climate of a street .. so generating all the art necessary to turn every level into a version of wintry place is out.

but making it snow for a bit, or rain after clouds gather at the top of the level? maybe have these effects go off on a timer?

should be doable. sparkle powder is doable after-all. this isn't fundamentally different.

  • bait and collectors make sense too.

    firefly collectors collecting fireflies, etc.

flowers might not just increase ambient mood and look pretty, they might also cause butterflies to gather around them and be easier to milk.

could also have items that dispel animals and plants. a piggy inhibition field preventing people from dropping pigs.

or generators that spit out items on a timer, possibly while automatically depleting local resources or possibly not. i mean you could have an auto-harvesting robot or creature that would wander from tree to tree on a street and spit out a big pile of cherries every once and a while.
