Olive trees!

As I was running through streets on my way to the Grocery Vendor to buy olive oil yesterday, it occurred to me that olive trees would be a great addition to Ur! We could press our own olive oil, and we would have olive branches! Now if I just had a beehive to set under the olive trees....

  • While I totally approve of the idea, though perhaps not olive trees as most tree resources have much more than one use unlike these would have, It's been done: http://www.glitch.com/forum/ideas/2989/. I've been guilty of the same mistake but try to check for duplicates ;)

On the topic of the idea, perhaps some sort of animal similar to chickens that produced them would seem more appropriate? As animals already produce a lot of the items that aren't changed the way tree resources are (IE Grain doesn't change into blue grain and red grain which have different uses.) olives might work well as an animal product.

Nooooow, most animal products don't have only one use either! Olives could be a cooking ingredient in addition to being pressed for olive oil, but what else could they be used for?

  • - An ingredient in pig bait.
    - If you "pit" them you get a cute message about what happens when you pit olives against you.
    - Olives and guano could be key ingredients in making the explosive parts of fireworks.
    - Olive oil as a wood finish for our new furniture.
    - New drink: Dirty martini, uses Olive Juice.
    - Action possibility: to "Olive" someone - like give, but you "Olive" them instead.  "Scarlett Bearsdale Olives you."

  • Vendor only items suck.

  • I think we should be able to make all the vendor-only bottles (sesame, oily dressing, olive oil) with one resource from one new tree. Like Allspice, except Alloil, and it's an Oil tree and like a gas tree only dripping with oil.

    Uh, I'll shut up now.

  • Instead of adding a new tree, how about making it possible to extract a basic oil from beans (or something else, I'm not fussy) and then convert it into different types of oil? Maybe with a blender, or with a new tool.

And you could make oily dressing in a blender with one of these oils plus some garlic or some other spice.

And (getting off topic here) perhaps you could make a basic syrup from something like cherries using an Awesome Pot, and convert it into honey and birch syrup and whatever else sticky that the giants might imagine later.

  • Until they open up a lot more of the map more trees might not be a good idea :(
When the new housing comes out think of how many trees are going to be taken away because of all of the housing blocks disappearing :(

  • since olives are a stone fruit, why not just take the easy way out and let you convert them from cherries?      All you would need to make olive oil is an olive press, and oily dressing could be crafted.

  • @Blackwolf Your concern was brought up in either the Q&A session or the Questions about Housing thread (can't remember which) and Stoot assured us that our houses would have front yards that are public which will be somewhat similar to quarters in the amount of trees they have on them. Main point being there will probably be a net increase in trees available, and not actually a decrease :)

  • I think either Olive trees or Convertible Olive fruit is a great idea. +1 vote

also I feel like honey and beer should be craft-able too. maybe we need bees and a new spice or herb - hops. Also Mushrooms.

that would take care of most of the unique market items.

  • After hearing other people's opinions I am inclined to agree that maybe another tree type is not the way to go. I am liking the suggestion that they become a convertible fruit from Cherry or Bean trees.
The main point remains though that Olive Oil, Beer, Honey, etc are all vendor only items. it seems like if the new economy is supposed to be player based then players being able to make these items must be addressed.

  • Maybe, once a week, sloths come down from their trees and leave olives on the ground.

  • "...sloths come down from their trees and leave olives on the ground."
...kinda like plops from the piggies? XDD

  • Yeah!

What would be funny about this idea (and it would actually be a little more often than once a week) is that sloth would mostly be useful for something else, and most people would end up just seeing olives laying around.  And most newbies would think that's where olives come from, the ground.  But occasionally, someone would catch a glimpse of a sloth in the act.  And the sloth could be all sneaky like, and say something along the lines of, "And nobody will know the wiser..."  or  "This will be really good..."
