Critical Noob Mistakes

Don't Exist. Noob Mistakes are a myth.

The natural inclination is always to panic, but there's no need. The world is extremely forgiving, and no 'wrong' way to do things. Push the buttons, pet the trees... the dev's did not create a world that's out to get us. The worst that will happen is you might get zapped across the screen, might even pay a visit to Hell... or more often you might be taken to a space you've never seen before!

There are no real penalties to death. You died because your energy was low (nibble pigs). After completing a small task, you get to leave Hell and return to the bigger part of the world in much the same way you left it... low energy and morale. There's no XP issue, you keep all your things, nothing else gets hurt by it. The Giants like us, they don't want to see us leave.

So you dropped an 'important item', or dropped a bag full of goods when you meant to only drop the empty bag, or donated your favorite pick... not a huge issue. If you need something, ask - you'll probably wind up with 8 offers. Cash starts to become easy to come by, and you wind up collecting a hoard of extra 'stuff'. Don't sweat the favor, you'll be surprised how much you accrue by just existing and doing things.

Broke your tool and can't fix it yet... ask, people are happy to help. Low on energy and can't find a pig, someone will probably have some food for you... or might make a pig! Want to help dig but left your shovel at home... someone *might* have a spare to lend you.

Forgot to set a skill to learning... no problem, you'll eventually learn the whole table. We continue learning when we aren't playing... if the world were live and you timed things so you were learning 24/7, you would finish the skill table in about a month... is an extra 2 days really a big difference? Picked the wrong one? You can pause the first and change to a different one. Didn't complete the Quest... it's in your Log and you can try again. Lost? Say something... someone will get you found.

So don't panic. Don't worry about doing things perfectly. There is no perfect, and perfect is boring anyhow.
It's fun, relax, enjoy.

(EDIT: With the move to beta the skill table got some time adjustments. It takes longer than a month, but the advice still applies.)

  • This is one of the things that I like best about Glitch, and why I would prefer not to see dangerous/deadly actions introduced into the game. If I do something "wrong," the worst outcome is that I have to go find/make something over again. OK, that's annoying and I kick myself for it, but it's no big deal. The world is friendly - whimsical and not inimical. That's a big deal! When Glitch becomes a game in which all of my things are stolen by other players, or I die and lose all my stuff, or have to deal with troll-like behavior of other players, I will happily skip off to other games where I don't have to put up with that.

    So, you know, yay Glitch!

  • I'm was so glad to see your message, it's nice to find out that when the game resets and we can all start again that the world is a very friendly place. I'm one of the Faunasphere Refugees and we had a similiar style of playing over there. That was my first MMO and I was very excited to be able to try out this game as well. I was only able to play for a very short time and the world the Glitch world seemed to be one that was fun to explore; it's always nice to know that most fellow players are willing to help out a newbie.

  • I love this part, the game is so forgiving! I am so looking forward to continuing to learn and make mistakes :)

  • Hi Gizmo & IrishElf. If you haven't already, join the FS Refugees group. This is a pretty logical place, if you don't try to compare it to what you've played before. Don't think too hard while you're playing. That's why it's playing and not working...

  • Good advice OP and sc803 :) Not played yet, so looking forward to it as it seems to have a great community atmosphere that I had on a few other MMOs (RIP). Also, I like the fact there is no violence, and lots of people to help and give assistance - the way it should be (IMHO)

  • I love the idea that there is no one true way, that there's different styles of playing and people want different things from the game. 'It takes all sorts to make a world' - according to my mum anyway. Its great to have so much variety.

And no such things as mistakes either, more experiences that you'll handle differently if you come across them again perhaps. Although Hell sounds kind of fun - I'll have to try it at least once just to see :)

  • Glad to have read this topic :-) The first time testing was so overwhelming...and after 5 minutes online I discovered that someone died and did go to hell because of low energy...whoops..panic all over. Hee with that pig..let me nibble!! Nibble??a Pig?? wow..another big surprise. :-) But I am ready to learn and have fun.
    Bye for now.

  • Wow, this is a great, well written post. I wish I saw this when I started out. What happens when we push the "permalink" button? Can we put this thing to the top so it is always visible to newbies? It would get tedious to bump it all the time...

  • So... to sum up, there's no critical noob mistakes besides panicking and thinking you've made a critical noob mistake?

  • Most of us are willing to stop and answer any questions you might have. Most things are pretty self-explanatory, but some things are just, huh? There is no time limit and there is no winner at the end, so it's just here to be fun. Glad you're enjoying it.

  • Hell was indeed a funny experience for me too! I sat there for a while staring at the screen since I had left my browser open overnight and ran out of energy. Took me a while to realize that the grapes weren't there for decor. ;)

  • I love this post.

As a new player, what I immediately loved about Glitch is that it was all about discovery. The game encouraged me to think "Wow. What can I do next?" not "How can I
    win?"

This was only reinforced by meeting other players. I was given butterfly lotion. I was encouraged to go to Hell (and that's a good thing). I was told about (and then shown) splanking and mooning. And I was given a link to an active project.

I didn't participate in the project. Not because it was hard to do, but because I was still too busy exploring. (Im hoping participate in a project during the next test.)

So thanks to the Glitch devs for making an amazing game that encourages exploration. And thanks to all the players who offered help when I needed it.

  • I too love this thread!  I felt in the same boat when I first started... thinking "awwww man i feel like i'm behind and missing out on stuff"

Doing my own thing in Glitch has been such a blast, and I always try to encourage new players to not worry because there is no right or wrong! :)

  • For those playing at home.... a couple tests ago I gave away absolutely every single possession, sold my house, and gave away the cash. It took me about 5 hours to get back to a comfortable way to play (house, tools, all the bags I could want, healthy cash supply). I think it took longer to give everything away than it did to earn it all back.

Knowing full well the skills have a huge impact on the ability to raise money... I still hold to my original thoughts - New Player Mistakes are a myth. Everything in Glitch can be rebuilt with a little time and patience... and even panic as a natural response is not wrong. Best advice I've ever given - take time to read while you can. The Forums, Groups (shameless plug for the FAQ Group Here), and the wiki.... knowledge is huge here :D

  • Some thoughts from a new player.

    1) I definitely get the sense that the game is pretty forgiving. But I also find I have trouble letting go of stuff. For example, I still have the "small shiny object with no intrinsic value" in my pack.

    2) Going to hell for the first (and only) time was rather scary. I was grinding something for the first time, and I decided to grind 50 beryl at once. Bam! I ground my energy past 0 and went to hell, which was pretty unexpected! It's good to know that there are no real consequences. Fortunately, I'd read somewhere about squishing grapes so I got out of there pretty quickly.

    3) I definitely feel behind-ish on housing. I haven't figured out how to accumulate currants effectively. It was only after this last test was over that I started reading the forums and realized you could sell minerals (to alchemical vendors, presumably?) and besides, all the available housing a) looks gloomy, and b) doesn't have patches to plant normal plants, is that right?

    4) I am trying to figure out the right balance between "discover stuff myself" vs. "hunt down information on the wiki or the forums". On the one hand, I don't want to get stuck for a long time doing useless stuff, but on the other hand, I don't want to take the fun of discovery out of the game.

  • magic panda:  somebody else digs those SSOWNIV's...you can get one every time you poke (yes that an action menu item) a stinky cheese.  I have a small pile of them in my house.
