User-created clothes

Could we create our own designs for shirts and clothes? We could upload images and designs and have some sort of voting periodically (maybe weekly?) to choose the best, sort of like threadless, but for our avatars. The winner of the contest could get a badge, too!

I think games get less stale when there is a lot of user created content, regulated by the community to prevent inaesthetic or weird stuff. Also, new clothes are always nice!

  • probably not going to happen. glitch isn't looking to have "user generated content" .. preferring instead designs from their art staff, possibly voted on or suggested by players.

    from stewart's gamasutra interview:

"You were talking about going back to the MOO stuff and having the ability to actually have an effect of the world. How much of an effect on the world are players going to have?

SB: Well, I mean, some of it is interaction with us. It's not totally open. We have a tool for location editing. I can drag stuff around. We're not going to give that to players. At least for the foreseeable future.

So people can't draw a penis using those bushes.

SB: Yeah, exactly. Some day, we might want to give some of that, open that up. Instead, we'll design the locations. And by the way, they'll be better, right? We're paying for people who are talented to do it so it looks awesome.

Players unlock new locations. So they kind of lay down where they're going to go. As they unlock them, we'll be a little ahead in terms of content development. Depending on which direction they push things, we'll go and develop more in that direction. We're also going to try a couple things like Tale in the Desert-style democracy for players."

Yeah they have to limit the user generated content and yes they have awesome artists on staff, but there are a lot of awesome artists that aren't on their staff. Being an artsy game will attract artsy users and I think the voting or even just having staff choose the best 1 or 2 or 5 of the month keeps it very safe. I'm no artist and I wont be designing t-shirts but I think it's a brilliant idea.

  • I bet they could be swayed if people paid for it, like KOL's custom tattoos. I think they're $10 or equivalent.

  • There ya go! Build your own custom clothes, $1(real money - or make a 'cash' system like FarmVille). Designs must be approved by staff, simply pg-rated sorta stuff. Keep the core of the game free but have purchasable (frivolous) content.
It would need a very easy to use interface - simply upload a picture or user-created pattern and have the ability to position it within the t-shirt frame.

  • Cap'n Bob, that's exactly what I had in mind! And exactly because of the problems striactic mentioned I suggested voting, although the staff idea sounds safer.

  • I like the idea. Even just t-shirt designs are a nice touch. I also agree that it should require payment. :)

  • I think it would be cute if we could make our own textiles to turn into clothes, bags, upholstery (?), etc. Then we could have sheep, and sheer them. Think of all the adorable naked little sheep.

Aren't there some good examples of games that let you "make" your own clothes, but within limited parameters? What if you could get different patterns and designs, and then sew them into a selection of things, like a recipe?

  • Yay for user-contributed content!

  • Hmm, I'd have thought all of this could be included in a premium subscription, along with the other features in a subscription plan (decorating your house & visiting even more areas?)... I mean what's the point of paying just $1 (in the eyes of Tiny Speck) - just add a bunch of premium stuff together for a higher price.
