What are herb gardens good for

The last time I checked house listings I saw the firebog ones with herb gardens instead of food gardens, so I looked into the various types of herbs.   Why would people prefer an herb garden?  I'm not trying to be snarky, I really would like to know the motivation of those who swing that way.  :)

  • PURPLE flowers!  :-p

You can grow herbs (flowers) that give you different results when you use them.  I don't have a lot of experience with herbs yet, but I'm sure that you need some for elemental handling and things like that as well.

I just know I like purple!

  • Herbs are a sort of specialty. There are skills specifically for herbs (Herbalism I & II) that I know of. You cannot grow reg crops in those plots though, which I found very limiting. And there are some quests that ask you to grow/harvest verious reg crops.
Each of the diff herbs grants a supposed extra ability or enhancement. Rookswort, Grandlevery, Rubeweed, Yellow Crumb, and Purple Flower. You. Can try to make $$$ from growing/selling these in auction.
Some ppl go nuts for purple =D

  • Can anyone tell me if "Croppery" affects herbs?

I have Herbology I+II and still harvest only 1 or 2 herbs per harvest. Pretty slow business. I searched up and down the forum and the wiki but could not find an answer to this. My assumption is "no", but I never see it written anywhere.

  • Croppery is only for veggie crops, and Herbalism is for herbs. :)

  • Herbalism 1: Ensures more gifts from planting, watering & clearing, increases chance of double yield when harvesting+shucking

Herbalism 2: More chance for bonuses, makes triple-harvests possible, increases chances of Double your shucking yield

So no, the number you harvest on a regular basis won't increase, just your rate of "super harvests".

Most skills now have a very detailed description of what they do, so you can check them out for yourself on the Skills page.

  • Herbs are useful because they give you buffs. Good buffs. Here are all of them.
Yellow Crumb Flower: Doubles skill learning speed
Silvertongue: Bonus on next quest or achievement
Hairball Flower: Walk faster and minor energy loss
    Gandlevery: Energy boost
    Rookswort: No periodic mood loss
Rubeweed: Better chance of the Rube appearing for you
Purple Flower: Makes you feel kinda.... purple..... :P
People can also sell herbs, too. Unlike fruits, you can't buy herbs from grocery vendors. You make them useful, and you find the seeds in the Ancestral Lands, or auction. I know SOMEONE who uses lotsa purple flowers, too

  • Thanks Biohazard.

I was checking out the skills, and guessed what you explained already. My only problem was that I was not sure if "crops" maybe includes herbs.

Maybe a language problem too, as I am not a native speaker. ;)

As the herbs seem to stack quite low in your inventory (5-10 per slot), I already assumed that this is meant to be like that.

Compared to the amount of stuff you can harvest with "Gardening II or III" from trees, I find the actual advantages of Herbalism a bit disappointing so far, though. Granted, I get some game tickets and a few music boxes, but very rarely a double yield or a double seed.

  • So the only way to get seeds "ingame" (= apart form auctions) are the Ancestral Lands?
Posted 14 months ago by Louis Louisson Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Herb seeds can be obtained from the Ancestral Lands, auctions, and from shucking the herbs, wherever you might find those (community herb gardens, parties, auctions, a friend, etc.).

  • Louis you can go to herb gardens and if you're lucky you can pluck some fresh herbs, then "shuck" them and replant rather than eat them.

The herbs are similar to making cocktails.  And I believe the luck of the Rube buff is not about seeing more of the Rube but having more luck getting items from harvests etc.

  • Does guano work on herbs you plant in a shared garden?

  • @Lucille Yep! Guano works on anything that is planted in a square plot.

  • NOTE for anyone thinking Yellow Crumb Flower is great after reading Shooper's post:
The skill doubles learning time for a very short time, it is basically just like Pungent Sunrise.

Realitsically you will only see a decrease in total time of roughly 90seconds per use. This means that yes you can double the speed you are learning but only if:
1)You haven't hit your favor spending cap - Herbs/Drinks won't let you pass that cap either! No effect past the cap!
    2)You are online
3)It is cheaper than donating anything currently on the market
