Best Food

Hi, I have all the cooking related skills and I was wondering if anyone did the math as to which food has the greatest energy output for energy/currant input. I'm eating this so I don't care if it doesn't sell high, I just want the greatest energy return.

  • There is always going to be an argument between awesome stew and meat tetrazzini.

    Awesome Stew
    Cost: 200 currants
    Energy Gained: 200
    7 ingredients needed

    Meat Tetrazzini
    Cost: 192 currants
    Energy Gained: 192
    4 ingredients required

  • just because it outputs the most energy doesn't mean it's efficient. It really depends what you collect, the awesome stew requires alot of beans and various ingredients, but the meat tetrazzini takes a long time to make, requires saucery 2 along with 3 seperate uses per meat tetrazzini.. and the saucepan skill as well.
    As for the auction..
When spice is cheap, I make Rich Tagines.
When bubbles is cheap, I make Fortifying Gruel.
When beans is cheap, Awesome stew of course!

  • Due to my playstyle awesome stew only requires 1 ingredient: beans.  One trip to ix nets me enough spice to last a long time.  I have AK6, so meat is never a problem.  And I'm never far from a produce vendor.  The only limiting factor is beans.  So I just harvest beans whenever I see them, and make stews whenever I get a bunch.  That works best for me.

I don't eat them all that much, though.  I donate most.

  • i like whatever looks tasty and is fun to make.

i like whatever i have the ingredients on hand to make a full stack plus one so i can leave the extra in the street.

  • Macs: Those four ingredients in meat tetra include two sauces, each of which have additional ingredients.

The biggest PITA with awesome stew is not the number of ingredients, but the fact that you have to gather (or buy) 20 beans per item.

  • I did some maths: docs.google.com/spreadsheet...

I personally only cook awesome stew and make meat tetrazzini when I'm out of beans.

  • Ooh. In terms of net energy gain the food I usually make, Deluxe Sammiches, is 29th. I only have Cheffery 1 at the moment and have to rely on my friends or the auction for pickles.

    Beautiful spreadsheet Victoria.

  • I always make awesome stew when I have the beans as its the most convenient thing to make. I pick the beans up whilst wandering. However, I also need to keep on top of my crops for this!

Are beans ever cheap these days? I never buy them from auction because it would cost around 80 currants just for the beans for one stew... I've always wondered who buys them!

  • Thanks for all the great replies! Awesome spreadsheet Victoria, it will certainly come in handy. I'm thinking of going for the Awesome stew. Seems pretty simple with a run to the produce vendor.

  • Personally I like making the Fortifying Gruel now. But before I used to make a lot of Meat Tetrazinni. I don't think it worths making Meat Tetrazinni anymore so much like I did before, because that sauce combo is really annoying to make...

Honestly for me, the Fortifying Gruel is the best. The ingredients to make are such a few:

    "1x  Oats
    1x  Pinch of Salt
    5x  Tiny Bubble
    1x  Hot 'n' Fizzy Sauce"

So easy! I really love the Fortifying Gruel!

  • You've got AK7; plain raw meat is easily the best in terms of efficiency when you factor in time.  Not the most energy dense stacks, but you should have meat coming out of your ears anyway.

  • For ease of crafting, I love abassid ribs.  Just spice and meat is all it takes, both of which are very easy to come by.  I don't think it has a very good energy input/output ratio, but since you can carry a ton of spices all in one slot (spice rack), it's very compact to carry around ingredients for, and only requires a grinder and grill.

  • I have AK 7. I only use my house pigs for food. I have 25 pigs (the max amount) and around 16 meat collectors. They supply me with enough meat to go mining for a long time. I usually make sure I have a bigger bag full of meat before I go mining. It s a totally energy free way to have food.

  • With remote herdkeeping and not wanting to fill up my brain with the cooking pot skills, I like the Obvious Panini.  It is cheese intensive but I just use no-no every few days at the end of a day and make a few large bags full of cheese.

  • a plea to the devs: please make better foods that don't contain beans, or perhaps add some sort of horrible gaseous buff to beany foods, and make it quick, before Ur becomes overrun with bean trees everywhere!

  • I'm a Fortifying Gruel fan.  It requires no garden crops (so I can donate those or take a break from planting if I choose) and so few ingredients!  At 192 energy, I find it more awesome than Awesome Stew, which requires a whopping 240 beans per 12-stack, plus several other ingredients.  I appreciate not having as many slots taken up with stacks of produce.  (Since the Hot 'n' Fizzy Sauce is also needed for Earthshakers AND Flaming Humbabas AND the two Hearty recipes helpful for visiting the Snow-Cone Vendor, I find that I make more H&F Sauce than any other item in the game.  I can make stacks of it and put them in my pantry, making it easier and less energy-draining to whip up a stack of food or popular/useful drink in a jiffy.)

If I've got significantly more meat than bubbles, I make Ix-Style Braised Meat:  162 energy and low requirements (meat, bubbles, spice, olive oil.)

Before I opened that recipe, I lived off Tasty Pasta:  rice, spice, and one each of meat/oil/onion/tomato, for 134 energy.  This allowed me to focus my early gardening skills on only 2 crops.  At even lower levels, Simple BBQ.

I give lowbies Abbasid Ribs, as they are both easy to make and give a good 88 energy, which works well with the under-level-6 set.

I am focused more on efficiency than on max energy gain.  I do wish that there was a larger range of energy gains across the recipes.  As things are now, by the time one is level 7/8 and still under 200 max energy, the few highest-gain recipes are already the most efficient.  I wish those were more late-level foods.  There are SO many fun recipes, but the majority of them are so inefficient to make and eat past the lowest levels;  one can eat an entire stack and still only make a dent in energy loss, quickly being confronted with the "starting to feel full" message from eating so many plates of food.

(I tend to avoid Meat Tetrazini.  It takes far too many ingredients to be efficient, including multiple vendor-only items, and I'm bitter that I can't harvest or grow mushrooms.)

  • "Meat Tetrazzini
    Cost: 192 currants
    Energy Gained: 192
    4 ingredients required"

HA HA HA HA... Making a batch of Meat Tetrazzini goes more like this--it takes like, 12 minutes of watching the bar fill to make 40 'Zinis:

    Make sure you have: 80 spice, 40 eggs, 40 milk, 40 tomatoes, 40 honey, 40 mushrooms, 160 cherries, 80 meat, 40 rice, 200 grain.
Turn 40 Spice into 40 ginger.
Turn 40 Spice into 40 black pepper.
Turn 160 cherries into 40 lemons
Turn 200 Grain into 40 Flour
Turn 40 Flour and Rice into 40 Plain Noodles
Turn 40 Eggs, 40 Milk, 40 Black Pepper into 40 Secret Sauce
Turn 40 Lemons, 40 Ginger, 40 Tomatoes, 40 Honey into 40 Sweet & Sour Sauce
Turn 40 Secret and 40 Sweet and Sour Sauces into 40 Tangy Sauces
Turn 40 Tangy Sauce, 40 Plain Noodles, 40 Mushrooms, and 80 Meats into 40 'Zinis.

    Awesome Stew is goes:
    Gather 800 Beans (!!)
    Buy 120 Potatoes, 80 Cabbage, 80 Parsnips, 80 Onions
    Grind up 40 Saffron
Turn 800 Beans, 120 Potatoes, 80 Cabbage, 80 Parsnips, 80 Onions, and 40 Saffron into Stew.

So gathering to prep for Awesome stew is time consuming, but standing around cooking the 'Zini is crazy time consuming.

For lower tier food, I'd go with Simple BBQ, it just takes sweet and sour sauce and 2 meats. Aces.

  • Of the prepared foods, Tasty Pasta is the best if you're looking at ratio of energy gained to energy+currants lost.

  • I have tons of stuff from trees, pigs, garden, butterflies, and chickens. What I tend to avoid is things that require a trip to the store. In particular, this is a problem for recipes that use oats and mushrooms. I think I should be able to grow oats. Of course, I also think I should be able to keep bees.

If mushrooms were growable in herb gardens it would give "dark" houses an additional sense of purpose that they're currently lacking, since the herbs are pretty useless and one can only get so much mileage out of having one's own Egg Plant.

I am forever grumbling about this.  I realize the bees would be a whole new mechanic, but I just don't see why we can't grow oats like we do rice, and don't get me started on the mushroom situation.  I was so happy near the end of Beta when they added parsnip seeds...I hope oat seeds and some mechanism  for mushrooms will make an appearance, too.  (I agree completely with the mud caves needing a boost.)
