Flat spots in terms of making progress

There was a bit of chat on this over the weekend, but I wanted to get it up here as well.

It gets very frustrating when you don't have a quest to work on and apparently no good way to earn a lot of XP. At the earlier levels, I was patient enough to pet and water hundreds of times. (I also had a garden growing, though that takes time to grow.) But since the level ups require more points for the higher levels, this is not very effective.

One of the facets of this is that I'd gone deep in gardening, and then started Animal Kinship. But the quests for the early skills don't reward with many XP, so as I was working on Animal Kinship I was earning XP at maybe a Level 3 rate, although I was Level 12. There needs to be a way to earn XP at a Level 12 rate.

I think this is just a nit with the current status of game development, and the upper skill levels are less fleshed out than the rest.

  • I noticed the same thing. However, considering the game is refreshed occasionally, it does not make as much sense to work on higher level stuff. It is more important to develop entry level stuff, as this is what will be used the most with the resetting. And with every reset, people can choose a new set and order of skills to try.But with the limited test windows, it is hard to get to high levels.

  • Psst. Earn money by selling things to the vendors, buy cool tools and such and donate them to shrines.
Just a suggestion for the alpha testing.
Obviously this is just an issue for us right now because we're in such a small portion of the game - I'm assuming it's not indicative at all of the 'full' game at all, where there will be so much more going on.
Same goes for lack of quests.

...or you could look for quoins located behind pine trees that give you 20xp every 10 seconds when they refresh, and not tell anyone - meanwhile using them to get the last 1000 points needed to Level up to 11.

Oh wait, was that just me?

  • I have had the same issue--not during my first time playing, but definitely the second time.

I got to Level 9 right before the game closed (all thanks being to gardening) but I was secretly embarrassed that I was also working on multiple skill quests that I should have been doing a long time before. So while I had been harvesting trees for a very long time, much much later I got a quest to go harvest some trees. That felt like a weird mismatch. And the same as clare with the Animal Kinship.

I worry that what feels like a flat stretch can turn a player off from the game pretty early on,

And I guess I have a question about Levels in general. What will eventually represent a higher Level? Right now people get to Lvl 9+ with a few hours of gameplay...so what number will eventually represent a much higher Level, something like 100+? Or are the players currently leveling very quickly so that the devs can test more advanced skills?

  • (Right now, all the play is accelerated so people can test some of the more advanced stuff in a short window of play.)

This general idea of flat spots has come up a few times and I've posted some new information in this other thread: alpha.glitch.com/forum/gene...
