Patch Quest Solution #137759

I'm not sure what to call this idea, but I am thinking of ways to help alleviate players' frustration over completing all quests that involve a patch. I recommend creating a "fire forest" or "dead forest" in a special hidden place (like the wintery place) where players can tend, dig and plant saplings. Here, the patches would be bountiful and trees would die rapidly because of the heat (on irregular cycles of the developers' choosing maybe based on XP of the player who planted the item).

This place could be accessible from the bogs or one of the new areas being built. I envision it would have a time limit that could be extended by certain actions much like Baqala (et al). There should be no teleports allowed directly into this place, and while getting in is one-way, there could be various drops or exits. I've given this a lot of thought. LMK if you'd like more of these thoughts.

  • I don't really think this is a problem. If it were a problem, while this is an interesting concept, I don't think it would alleviate it. They'd have to know how to get there.

Though, I don't think the starter quest should involve a patch. Or it should at least say where to find patches. That sounds like a more direct solution.

  • Starter quests do involve patches though... and yes, I think the Rock should tell you how to get there, just like when you have to complete the sno cone quest he tells you how to access the Wintry Place. The quests that involve patches (and corresponding achievements) seem to increase with levels.

  • Let me say again, I really like the zone idea in general. In fact, I like the idea of zones having their own rules on how things grow. Someone had another thread about places with exaggerated sizes inside the consciousness of the giants. We also see some growth variance a bit in how the spice plants look different areas, such as Charka Pool and Shimla Mirch. So I think there's a lot more to do with this.

Yes, the starter quest, I was on that for a while, but I don't recall thinking it was a problem. Though, when I first started playing, it was frustrating that the Rock wouldn't even suggest where to look for one. Eventually I just said F' it, I'll find one when I do.  I eventually ran into a patch at my house, and quest complete. Simple as that.

I haven't encountered the later patch quests myself, but I don't imagine a higher level player having problems doing it if he wanted. I think for the Patch Achievements, your proposal would definitely alleviate any problems someone might encounter.

edit: rewrote a bit, and clarified on some pronoun anxiety spots.

  • Mr. Dawgg I enjoy your communication style and am tempted to argue with you just for another post. But I don't disagree. That is all.

  • I think I had to hit post on that one quick to go afk. It's rather jarring to read. But ok. I might edit it.

    But Ok. Sounds good.

edit: edited my other post. it wasn't written correctly. sorry about that. it was a rushed production and i didn't preview it originally.

  • No seriously, I rather enjoyed it. :-)

  • With the patch stuff, I really had the same experience as MD--I just put the thing on the back burner until I ran across a patch.  So I guess my question to Spellbound is, was it that you wanted to get that quest out of the way before you moved on, or did you back-burner it and still couldn't find a patch (also entirely likely)?

  • I like the fact that the best way for a lower level player to complete some of these quests is to find a higher level player willing to help.

  • Nanookie, it's both of those things. As a lower level player, many of the quests required me to use resources that were very unavailable (the world was pretty well populated when I joined). I skipped what I couldn't do, but for a while that meant I couldn't do much.
