Bags Are Forever?

One of the problems that I face at times when moving to a new house is what to do with excess bags.  As anybody who has moved much knows, you've got to carry all the bags along on the move.  It would be very convenient if there was a way to 'liquidate' excess bags.  As it stands they can't be placed up for auction or sold to a Vendor.  They can, of course, be given away or abandoned.

But are bags truly forever?  Right now there is no 'exit mechanism' for bags to leave Ur.  Once they are in the world, purchased from a Hardware Vendor, they exist permanently for ever more.  I could see this as eventually becoming a problem, if people buy and discard a lot of bags.  Personally I wouldn't mind being able to donate them to a shrine, even for zero or a very small amount of favor credit, just to get rid of them.

I know, I know.  Fill them with stuff and give them to new players.  Will there always be an ever-increasing number of new players to give them to?  Eventually Ur will be saturated with bags.  It could even become a griefing problem.  Elemental Pouches are bags, too, and they're very inexpensive.  Right now I myself could purchase 6,761 of them and litter the streets.  Griefers could do so as well, and... there's no mechanism to dispose of them once they are in the world.

  • An interesting point, Parrow -- now I'm imagining the eventual bag-death of the Ur universe.
It would also seem that bags are the new Glitch engagement gift.

  • You can try dropping them in an instanced location, such as the subway train. That should get rid of them, although I suppose we could use a more elegant solution.

  • I was under the impression that no item, once dropped, lasts forever, that items expire when just left on the street after a while.... But I could be wrong.

  • Nothing expires when you leave it on the street, other than notes that will expire after a certain number of readings (so I've heard anyway) and edible things that piggies will dispose of for you. The instanced area thing might work. But of course it's not optimal.

Hmmm, interesting idea....*runs off to hardware vendor*

Of course, this is a horrible horrible idea....

  • I can always use more bags. I make newbie bags to give to the new players I come across, and it is seriously depleting my funds to constantly be buying more bags. Send em to me. :). I promise to pass them on to a good home.

I have been known to use the shrines as garbage cans. Especially for some of the notes that I no longer want. I haven't figured out another way to get rid of notes.

  • Well then we obviously need garbage cans.

  • One garbage can outside of Bureaucratic Hall should be enough.

  • Eh, if the shrines work as trash cans, there's really no need to add in actual ones. I like the idea of giving them to newbies once you're done with them! However, they do make moving a pain--when the time comes, I'm planning on enlisting the help of a friend or two. Hopefully that's addressed in the housing update, though.

  • well there is no practical need but the idea of the shrines is you are donating something as an act of worship or piety.   Throwing garbage in there goes against that concept.

  • The giants need things to hold their stuff too! ;)

  • FWIW, the devs did say that there are going to be Moving Boxes in the near future :)

I do think that filling them up and giving them to newbies (or even giving them away empty!) is a nice gesture -- the bags themselves cost currants, after all, and I know that when I was a n00b, storage space was a constant problem for me.

Er, also it took me forEVER to scroll down and realize that 16-slot bags existed.  Um. *blush*

  • I'll take them! You can never have too many :)

  • I want an "Even Bigger Bag" that holds 32 stacks.  I would pay for that with currants...

  • I'd seriously consider something like a pelican that followed you around and acted as an infinite inventory for 10k per Glitch day...

  • I don't think I've ever run into a problem of too many bags; quite the opposite, actually. I use them to store things in my house, and since I tend to "overstock" (see what I did there?) I usually end up with what I consider too few bags on my person. For instance, I have 3 (going on 4) bags full of nothing but hooch. I have an entire bag full of guano. I have 6 bags of herbs and 1 bag full of seeds alone.
So I don't generally have too many bags for my purposes.

  • They can't be tossed in those giant stone garbage cans on almost every street? aw darn.

  • Hi
When group Islands get going I hope to open a hostel for new players :D

I would be more than happy to take in extra bags, I usually have a free slot so if you see me in game feel free to give one, or IM me if you want to drop a couple my way.

These bags will be used to gift new players with a few select items plus a bit of extra space for their first journies into Ur

  • I too make up Pay It Forward bags for newbies.  I'll take any small bags that people don't have further use for.

  • If you don't have the time or inclination to chase newbies down to give them bags, maybe you can drop them off inside Bureaucratic Halls, for now, so new players can take them.

(Hey... Is Bureaucratic Hall instanced? It might be, SORT of...I teleported a newbie there last week, s/he followed me into the Hall, then s/he left and--supposedly--came right back in, at which point we were apparently in two different versions of the same Hall. On the other hand, the Sandbox group had left salmon scattered everywhere, and those were still there when we wandered into the Hall, so SOME things remained that both of us could see. (Were there several different instances of the Halls with endlessly multiplied salmon piles to cater to each individual or group entering the Halls? *My brain hurts.*))

  • No matter how many 'bags for new players' projects people start, and it is a fine and honorable thing to do, that was just a side issue in the topic as I started it. Don't others think I might be right, that at some point we will all find the game saturated with bags? Or will there one day instead be a leveling off of new bag purchases.

One exit scenario for bags that has come up out of the discussion is new: all those bags given to newbies will remove a pretty good number of bags from Ur. Whatever percentage of newbies that take the bags but then don't stick around long and quit playing will 'remove' the bags in their possession from Ur simply by having hold of them when they quit.

In a far-out scenario when there ARE too many bags (a bagimonius catastrophe indeed!) we can start creating kamikaze alt accounts just to pick up bags and leave the game. Not likely but it's fun to dabble in weird possibilities.

  • Another problem with this, is that it takes out a fair number of currants that would be used to buy things.  This is a problem, as it could unbalance the economy.  Less currants leaving the game world is always a bad thing.

  • I tried to help a new glitch by mailing a bag to them.... could not do that. Had to deliver in person.

  • There is an "even bigger bag" ... it's called a cabinet!  :)
I don't quite understand how my poor little Glitch can stagger around Ur with 16 bags stashed on her person? I can't carry that many bags in from the grocery store in one trip.  (And my bags never hold more than one stack of anything.)
