In support of keeping Home Streets public

Recently there has been a very vocal few in the forums up in arms about how they would like their Home Streets all to themselves. Since happy people tend to be much less loud than unhappy people I wanted to start a thread to show TS that most of us are very happy with sharing our Home Streets as a public resource.

In the old system we had to pay for a house with currants. Then those houses came with a very limited number of preset resources. The most you could hope for was 5 trees, 24 of one kind of crop plot... maybe a jellisac or firefly swarm. It was extremely limited.

Now the possibilities are practically endless. Our backyards are a completely private haven for almost any resource we can dream of. Then as a bonus we can choose a whole additional set of resources to sit right outside our front door! We just have to share them.

Now I believe the fact that there are huge resources networks attests to the fact that a majority of players like and want to keep sharing their Home Streets. Glitch is all about cooperation and sharing and I think most glitchen get that.

I know that in the past very vocal unhappy people have caused game changes. There have already been a few tweaks to Home Streets (although I believe these are positive tweaks). I am a bit afraid that the few angry glitchen screaming at us kids to stay off their lawn might actually cause more changes that would hurt the beautiful resource routes.

If you agree that Home Streets should stay public I'm starting this thread as a place for you to speak up so the wonderful staff at TS sees that most of us like sharing the things that were only kind of ours to begin with.

(p.s. this thread is not referring to people who have misunderstood and lost things. I do think there should be clearer warnings about what is safe on your Home Street and what is not)

  • I really like foobunny's suggestion of renaming our front yards "xxx's Public Street" as a way to notify people that snatchable items left there may be snatched and that imagination spent to create resources on the Public Street is being spent on resources that can be shared by anybody who comes to the street.

  • " The reason is that without the penalty..." Even your own words indicate that you intend it to be punitive.

My use of a first person narrative is to make it clear that I'm discussing my experiences and my opinions. It is a standard writing tool. Please don't trouble yourself by thinking that I am taking "these discussions so personally." I'm fine. As I also stated, I don't really care either way. I DO care about a punitive aspect being introduced, and I wholeheartedly support the idea of CHOICE.

Yes, I agree, Glitch has thus far been designed to encourage sharing - your plan would seek to force it, or punish anyone who chose to share in a different manner or not at all.

  • Fynella:  its just about the concept of public spaces.  Once you have a choice to make something private then it is by default Private.    When you allow anyone in its just you sharing what belongs to you (or what TS wants you to believe belongs to you - it all really belongs to TS and they can delete your acc't at any time for various and assorted violations).

I'm really not a very sociable player - I generally mine alone and have a bad habit of ignoring the chat window.   I do like the idea of learning to get along in spaces that nobody controls - that was my interest in the community gardens and that is my interest in truly public streets in front of your house.

If they are going to be changed to private-player owned streets that is fine, its not the biggest deal to me but I'll be disappointed and not particularly interested in running what would have to be defined as a "charity"  farm on my street.   I am just not interested in learning about how to be a philanthropist, I'm more interested in learning about how people can become more tolerant of others in spaces that they cannot control.

I wonder what approach the wickdoon wood tree hippies are taking to their home streets?   I supported that initiative because I thought it was fine to have a small street where people could go to get wood, wood being so scarce back then.   The bean tree griefers (or whatever they were called that was comparable to "hippies") believed that those supporting the wood trees were really more interested in controlling that street than in providing wood for everyone.   I know the wood tree hippies must have spent a lot of currents on keeping up that street and I was in favor of their efforts.   I wonder if they are providing resources on their home streets or if they favor making them player owned?

I gave up on community gardens because there were too many  control freaks who wanted to stake out a claim on a public spot for their personal use to  plant and harvest their OWN seeds. It seems a compromise was offered when we were given the chance to develop the public home street - a measure of control fro the control freaks.  But that is not enough - they want TOTAL control.
I guess if public home streets become by definition private I will just cultivate my back yard and house (which I have actually neglected in favor of upgrading the street).

I am NOT looking forward to group halls.  If people can't learn to share small public spaces like gardens and home streets then how are they not going to get into fights about who contributed what to a group hall.?

When street projects were active people just gave away huge resources to the development of the street and didn't later try to claim any ownership or control of that street.   Top contributers got their names put on the street page (just as we now all have our names on the home streets we contribute to).   I don't remember any top contributers claiming that they ought to have control over those streets on account of how much the contributed to its creation.

  • @Audaria Maybe it would help if we thought of the public street system as a feature that players might choose to opt in or opt out of. As of now, there is no opting out. All I am suggesting is that players should be given the choice to opt out of it.

I love the public street system but I can understand that some players hate it. I completely support any player's desire to be able to choose to opt out of the public street system.

  • By that same reasoning we might as well ask TS to allow us to opt out of the whole multi player thing and just play everywhere alone or with friends, so that we never have to interact with anyone we don't know or like.   You can already do that if you stay in your private house, but now people want a bigger private  house that includes the street in front of it.   If that is granted I reckon that it wont be enough for some people who don't want to interact with strangers, griefer., They will begin to resent that everyone else has access to public streets they can't visit (because they don't want to see anyone they don't want to see...)

  • Really? Are you satisfied now?

Edit: This comment is to the one who helped themselves to my home street items.
I now know that once the resources are used up there will be no more.

So ends my feelings about home streets - Nothing for you from my public street!

  • Yes, and if you hate America so much why doncha geeeeeeeettout.
This kind of reasoning really doesn't advance the conversation so much.

TL;DR: Getting sick of the tailbiting.

  • I wish the devs would come and help settle this debate, because this is getting really drawn out and painful. All of the relevent points (and many of the irrelevant ones) have been beaten to death. I know I should probably just ignore this thread, but it's like a trainwreck. I can't look away.

  • +1 Roger Conte. Similar threads that have deteriorated like this one in the past have been locked by the devs. No need for people to be nasty to each other.

  • I'm trying to figure out if there is a lesson to be learned for the community, because it would be a shame if we stopped having discussions about important issues, but it seems like none are well received, be they:

    - Threads asking if people hold position X or position Y
    - Threads to convince people who hold position X that they should switch to position Y

Or threads like this one, which seems like it would be safest:

    - Threads for people who hold position X to talk about why they hold position X

Because naturally there's going to be a diversity of opinion in each of them, but even in one that was intended for a group of people within whom there would be no conflict, there has been a crazy level of conflict and antagonism. I don't want to say "this is why we can't have nice things," but if we can't agree that:

    griefing is griefing, and
    disagreement is not griefing, but
acting like disagreement is griefing is griefing

I don't see how we're ever going to have reasonable conversations about anything.

  • A thread that is formed in a community for people who only agree with the same idea is a circle jerk. Sorry, I didn't realize. Carry on.

  • As I think I mentioned a few pages ago, staff has already said on numerous occasions that they're not going to give us access controls for streets.

I'm curious about this "if you make your street private, then you can't go to public streets" concept, though.  The conditional generosity of "if you don't share with me, then I won't share with you" seems a bit strange in this context.  If we're both at a party with a buffet, and a few people contribute food, but you don't, is it okay for you to eat?  Personally, I'd think it would be fine, but I guess some here disagree.

Stoot has addressed the public street issue before.

    Here was a recent post.

(Ha! And almost jinx after glum's post about same :)

  • Thanks for replying kevbob :)

How will privacy options in general (not necessarily specific to home streets) be addressed in the future, if at all? Is that something on the radar, or is it unlikely to be a consideration?
Posted 7 months ago by Xev Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Maybe they will handle privacy options in the future by being really careful with naming and identifying what is public vs what is private?
Posted 7 months ago by Treesa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • To be quite honest, if Glitch is a forced socialization game, rather than an MMO with the option for players to interact in a variety of ways (which is the mistaken impression I was previously under), I fear it will be quite insufferable.

That said, if that IS indeed the trend, I shall go about my merry way and find another game that doesn't insist on dictating the manner and attitude towards which every player engages in the game as enforced by a rather brutish community.

I would appreciate a definitive answer from someone who does know for relative certain (said person in this instance being kevbob). At this point, I'm holding out some hope that additional privacy options are a concern - if a lower priority one. Likewise, with the upcoming group halls release, that would potentially allow for some variation between what is truly public and what is actually private, thereby allowing a bit more creative gameplay rather then this catty, in-your-face "everyone must play the way I play or else it isn't fair!" attitude.

I realize this is beta, and many things are yet uncertain, but this answer will clearly dictate how I interact and IF I interact with Glitch in the future, and would be truly, earnestly appreciated. I fully accept if I have made a gross misjudgment about the nature of Glitch and what the game is all about. Perhaps I am being 100% unglitch-like, and if that is indeed the case, I would prefer not to waste anyone else's time further.

  • Could you be a bit more specific about the other privacy issues you have in mind? Maybe, and I don't mean this in any kind of snarky way, that even deserves its own thread? (I say this because I'm really interested, but I think this one thread might have run its course or even be flirting with getting locked.)

Even if I personally feel that a lot of different play styles are being addressed through the way the different spaces behave (ex., players who want to be social/resource-pool would do more in their front yards, people who are uncomfortable with the presence of others in their space would do more in their back yards), I am totally in favor of people having access to reasonable privacy controls for their personal information, etc. If people are worried enough about this to leave, then we should definitely be talking about what "reasonable" privacy settings would be across the board.

  • Agreed, and if anyone else keeping up with this would be kind enough to wait, I will gladly gather my thoughts and consult with other users who have voiced similar concerns. Tomorrow I will post a (hopefully) concise list of concerns and ideas.

For those who have contributed so much to this thread, please feel free to mail me your stuff if you would like it included in the op. I want to be as thorough as possible right off the bat, (especially with the possible attention of staff), but additional points will be appended where applicable.

    Thank you :)

  • I like public streets. I like clicking through street posts so I can surprise someone by planting something in their garden or leaving a present on their yard. And sometimes I come home to my street and find that someone left me a gift!

Glitch has a wonderful community based on sharing and I'd like that public streets gives us another way to do that.

  • I don't know if this has been addressed since I skimmed most of the responses but I am curious about what the "other" privacy issues are. I don't really see why privacy is such an issue in this game. Its not Facebook, we are for all intensive purposes completely anonymous players in a game. Isn't blocking a player enough privacy? What can they do to you if blocked?

Here's an exercise, look at the Glitch next to you. Now, tell me their gender, hometown and the hair color of the Player.

  • In a world ideal and marvelous, there would be 3 options we could choose:
    - home streets public
    - home streets opened to the friends we added
    - home streets private
Would be cool if TS thought of putting those 3 options and everybody would be happy

  • Hey all, for those who are asking and interested, here is the new thread addressing privacy in general: http://www.glitch.com/forum/general/21772/ (warning, it's LONG)

Thanks very much to everyone who has contributed, either asking questions, offering suggestions or sharing why privacy is important to them, too.

I am SURE I missed stuff, so if you have things to add, please don't hesitate to do so. I will do my best to update the OP where applicable.
