Concert / Public Show venue

I'd like to suggest a public venue where performances could happen.  Eventually some sort of music would be great, but even as things are, scenes could be acted out on a stage "machinima-style."

Perhaps to rein in chaos, there could be a sign up sheet.  Like an open-mic night.

Also, we've already had a couple of weddings (at least) and it would be neat to have a spot where things like that could happen.

(I searched and didn't find anything, so if this has already been suggested, I apologize.)

  • I'm already on it...
Here's a link to the early stages of development. :)

    Special credits:
@Morticia Addams - Flowers and mushrooms.
    @sugarQB - background mountain range.

And, yes, I've been in development for over a week now, prior to the beginning of the last test.

  • Beautiful venue!

  • Thank you. I have a lot more to do yet.

  • Awesome!  I love it when I have ideas that someone else is already working on.  It makes me feel like it was probably a good idea to start with.

I like what I'm seeing, @Fokian Fool - thanks for the preview!

  • Absolutely gorgeous FF.

  • I agree with the OP.  There are already a couple of streets which evoke natural amphitheaters (the central portion of this street, for example), but an actual stage with wings would be lovely.

I'm confused by the artwork.  If it's just a fun project for FF to work on for his own enjoyment, terrific!  If it's meant to be used in the game, I'm left scratching my head, because our avatars would look completely out of place in that setting, and because we don't have the ability to move in three dimensions.

  • Fokian Fool - that is so groovy!

  • I believe within the first two weeks of testing I started a group with the idea of putting on Glitchian Shakespeare plays. (I then left the group a few weeks later because I didn't even want to think of it.)

It is still something I'd like to pursue. I started to write a bunch of ideas here but decided they belonged in ideas. Link.

  • Actually, @glum pudding,  this is an example of what @stoot barfield mentioned in a recent article (http://www.pehub.com/115378/stewart-butterfield-on-the-pressure-of-high-expectations/).
I'm using the API to import the user avatars into my custom world. This was intended to be for a wedding that has already gone by (the g33ks), but I didn't finish on time. After another wedding shortly thereafter I realized this was worth pursuing further. I have my registered API code with Tiny Speck already and I'm able to import any authorized player Glitch avatar into my world as a consequence. I actually know who to manipulate such in 3D. :) But our Glitches already move to a limited degree that way. We've been doing it with the "jump"  or "up" commands. This allows us to select hidden pathways that can create the illusion of depth-ward movement. I've seen this in some of the newer streets and in the Fire Bogs. I've been directly encouraged by TS staff to continue working on this.

I'll try to have some simple demo done by the end of the day today.

I can try to create a winged stage next. I had already started dabbling with such a design last week. It's one of at least 3 total that I have going on right now.

  • So you've actually created a 3D world that Glitches can move around, jump, talk and interact in?

  • I would love to see some of the stuff you are always talking about, Fokian! You seem to have so many projects going on. But half the time I don't really get what you are talking about (not being a coder). Post some demo vids!

  • That's what I'm doing, yes. I still have a ways to go. I'm doing a lot of code development and complex 3D graphics work right now. As soon as I finish this next render I'll be uploading it and an improved test page (same link as above -mostly- but with the ability to specify what image).

I don't have a whole team of developers under me to divide up the task, so I do it all. Takes a bit longer that way :)

  • This is such a great idea!!  Wouldn't it be awesome if people could record music through a mic on their computer and then upload it to the game and put on concerts?  In another thread someone posted a link of Evravon (sp?) and Shea performing and singing, and it was absolutely beautiful!

Also, what a great idea Lord Bacon-o!  I love the idea of Glitch-speare plays, its so clever!!

  • Dude. That's awesome. I totally wanted to put on an improv play last test, but couldn't get it together in time. :D

  • Sound playback is pretty easy, live recording might be problematic. I've given it a little bit of thought already, but I've got other issues I have to resolve with the animations and chat first.

  • I hope this isn't a total thread hijack now. I'll continue to post updates in it as this project comes along.

The original test link has been updated and the following options will work now:
    http://basketcasesoftware.com/glitch/animations/wedding/test.html?background=day
    http://basketcasesoftware.com/glitch/animations/wedding/test.html?background=night
    http://basketcasesoftware.com/glitch/animations/wedding/test.html?background=moon

The original just defaults to the first one listed.

  • FF, I understand what the API is, but I think Wiggles is asking for something which is inside the game, not on your own servers.  My point was that I don't think the little scene you're building could be incorporated into the rest of the game.  Yes, we have extremely limited 3-D abilities, but what you've drawn looks far more suited for a game like Second Life.

  • Since I am the OP, I declare you not to be a thread hijacker, @Fokian Fool; also, Lord Bacon-o has also posted in the ideas forum with some detail that fleshes out what I was trying to say, if anyone is interested in checking that out.

(edit) @glum pudding - you are right about what I was discussing, though I do like the idea of expanding the game in whatever way Glitchen feel appeals to them.
Posted 16 months ago by Wiggles The Fluent Subscriber! | Permalink
  • FF, What program are you using for that? Is it Bryce?
Posted 16 months ago by Edward Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @glum pudding - I've already granted permission to TS to incorporate any images I'm generating into the existing game. And I can do certain image edits to them to make them more "cartoony". The images dimensions are consistent with the existing game format. I can also generate the developer sized versions if needed. :) What you are seeing is just a background. The code framework can use any image, including existing Glitch streets. But, you are right, the OP did imply something more in game (and I wish they were my own servers!). I don't know about the "Second Life" reference there. The images I've been doing are a bit more sophisticated in their production (those background mountains have component counts measured in the billions!) and much longer to render. (35 minutes 45 seconds on that second link for example). Those images have taken days to research and compose. I did it to fill a need I saw and to try to help out the players with something nice.

@Wiggles The Fluent - Thanks for the direct permission and the thread link. It was inspirational.

@Edward - Yes. Bryce 7.1 PLE right now. I'd like to expand to the Pro version, but my funds are limited right now. I'm struggling just to pay my hosting fee every month. :(

  • In-game comedy night is a great idea:

Set up a special 'performer only' group, where the on-stage glitch could type out their opinions, quips, and japes to the approval (side-comments, cat-calls) of the general chat crowd.  i love it!

  • Lol!  Comedy night would be awesome!

  • Would love to see some of these venues in game...sort of like picnic shelters that you can reserve in parks here in the US.   Would be nice to have standard gathering locations that people could use/share though as more players come into the game, it would be helpful to have a reservation system set up...maybe through the lizards?

  • Did you see the connected thread by @Lord Bacon-o? http://beta.glitch.com/forum/ideas/6410/
He suggests something like a reservation system too.

  • As promised some updates.
This is a test of a concept here:
    http://basketcasesoftware.com/glitch/animations/wedding/test2.html
I just borrowed someone else's application and replaced their images with mine. It was just an experimental project on their part and there's an invite to share timing and other results on other hardware, especially mobile devices. I'm looking into a different method than him that might work better. His version has some bugs. Yes, I'm thinking about mobile use. :) The goal here is that the basic scene will change according to the Glitch clock. I might play with weather and seasonal images later.

Here are the time-of-day settings that I've developed so far. There might be a few technical tweaks I could do (sun position and lighting angles appropriate for the time of day for one), but I don't see it as urgent.

and a couple that don't quite make the cut:
