Dusty Stick Faux Pas, Bad TS

Well a unique consolation, nice gesture but shouldn't everyone who was in the game at the time be similarly entitled? Whether or not affected by a bug, suddenly its become very good luck if TS makes a mistake (for some people).

People are now bidding millions to obtain this rare item.
And the fibres which are being dropped by the dust bunnies, imply by their description might be useful.
Certainly that item will be in very limited supply, and unobtainable unless purchased from the lucky stickholders.

I think its a terrible error. Akin to Jagex making the party hats and similar holdiay items tradeable. Such items became the most coveted and valuable items in the Runescape world, to the regret of Jagex.

  • If the fiber produced from Dusty Sticks is useful, there will be other way(s) to obtain it.

  • If TS wants to give some players a specific item and not all of us, so what? It does not make the game any less playable for the rest of us. It does not make the recipients better Glitchen. Perhaps you would prefer the entire game be played as a commune - all property community owned. That way no one would have more or less than anyone else.

There are many things I do not have in in Ur - a dusty stick is just one. I can still love my little Glitch and pet piggies and grow onions and give my friends gifts. I can go about my little life happy and content. I do not feel disadvantaged.

  • hm, a trophy would be better in this case 'glitch 2012 database meltdown trophy'

this way it cant be sold, so no one will ever covet it....instead of an item that can be sold

didnt everyone that lost an item get them back (with the exception of notes, from what i understand)

  • for some loyal fans the developers can never do wrong and will always jump into their defense.

in a few cases items were not returned automaticly and if you couldn't make a full account of what was lost you may not have seen a return.

In one case to my knowledge a certain glitchen was reimbursed double the items they had in their bags.
And they also received a stick.

And I can assure you my actual feelings are completely neutral, i'm a moderate expressing an opinion.

  • +1 to what kookaburra said.
My opinion- not a faux-pas . I am not sure that every player got every item returned to them .
I see it as TS making amends for an error that cost players headaches , lost items , and lost time to deal with the issue. I am happy TS decided to do this (and no i did not get one)-I think it shows well for their company that they did . but---to each their own opinion.
Posted 9 months ago by serenitycat Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It was a great decision to those who got one, and a bad one to those who didn't. Personally I think TS should give it to everyone, and give players affected free credits.

  • The game is back in Beta.  Nobody should have gotten anything.  TS was very quick to fix things the way that they could have.  But giving out 'elite' items to those who the devs had the most contact with... well, it helps foster the development of an Elite.  Which is a bad thing for the development of a game community.  There was a LOT of that stench around with the 'Beta Tester Elite' at Faunasphere;  for the most part that issue doesn't exist here, but TS needs to make sure it stays that way.
Posted 9 months ago by Rannel Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I didn't get one, and personally I love that it exists. So much mystique has been created around this stick. I feel it's just like the SB musicblock and Yeti. Only a certain group of people have it and it makes it special to those people that were involved in whatever happened for them to obtain it.  I'm sure TS has more rare items up their sleeve. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if they made a an item that only a single person can get(There are a couple badges like this), or an item given away to a random amount of people who encounter X...the possibilities are endless.
Posted 9 months ago by Muncey Mango Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I see two likely possibilities: the stick is something that the rest of us beta players will get later or the things the stick gives (fibers) will be available later when they're useful.

In either case, I would like a stick too (for the novelty value), but I don't see a need to flame Tiny Speck about it.  I think the best option would be for those who complained to have a couple of weeks of being the only ones with sticks, then give them out to the rest of us.

This is especially true because some of us can't tell whether or not we lost anything among the many bags in our house.  I know I didn't lose anything unique, but it's pretty hard to verify that I didn't lose anything at all.  For example, one of my bags of excess emblems had only one left in it.  Was that because I gave the others away to newbies or because 15 were lost? (I gave up on bagging emblems long ago and have started dropping them on top of the full bags.)

  • +1 to what Kookabura said. If everything should be distributed to everyone, then there shouldn't be any rare item at all - case in point the SB-1. It is given out by TS and very rarely. Should everyone get a SB-1 as well then?
Posted 9 months ago by Rah Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think it was a good gesture for those who were affected, there were alot of headaches-- But i will say, out of all my friends who started at the same time as me, i was the only one who didnt get one, which is dissapointing :(
Wish there were other sweet item's given to players who achieve certain feats-- as muncey said--- maybe one for getting 200k in a game day? :O (had to try ;) )

but i do know alot of people were very frustrated with this bug, and i do believe that it was a good thing they got a special item, or they would have hard feelings against tiny speck (even though, yes this is beta, and things are bound to happen)
Posted 9 months ago by blackwidow Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Its not about flaming the folks at Tiny Speck, clearly they made one mistake and thats forgivably human.

One way or the other such issues will cause disenchantment for some players.
As the game is operated as a business and the goal is profits, that goal is best served by retaining playerbase while gaining playerbase. Clearly the players who where affected by this bug, if not reimbursed might become disenchanted and leave the game. But going the extra step beyond reimbursement to rewarding someone for what is effectively a chance event, that can also cause the same problem.

I am looking forward to seeing someone else's dusty stick in action on the street.  It looks really cute.  However, if everyone had a dusty stick, all the dust bunnies running around would be annoying.  And it might even cause lag...so be careful what you wish for.

  • I'm sorry, I totally disagree with the bogus everyone should have everything theory...idiotic socialist / welfare / entitlement attitude. Really, should everyone have SB1 music blox? NO...should everyone have a Yeti doll? NO...Should everyone have something that was meant to compensate those that went through some trauma if you didn't? NO!!!!  To me, the only tragedy here is that they were made sellable or tradeable...I'm happy for those that got one!  They deserved something for what they went through...give me a break.

This small gesture of a cute pixel item that some have, actually make me want to play a game where the devs will compensate the players for lost things or just the trauma of dealing with the lost things even if they got them all back.  It means the devs have heart and compassion for their players. Sorry some feel it's 'elitist'...I prefer to think it's compassionate and sensible. There is always going to be some small thing that you may never have the opportunity to get...get over it...next time, you might be the one affected and you'll get something others won't...it all balances out in the end. (and for the record...this player account did not get one of those cute sticks).

And yes, anything that might be 'gained' from this item will likely be offered to everyone later, but in a different manner.  That is finally something relatively cool...multiple paths to getting the same materials...finally some uniqueness and diversity to the game!

  • a little impassionate criticism should do no harm; success is usually justification enough for the methods employed, and I don't see the company failing because of this.

I myself will not leave the game over it, when i go it will be for other reasons no doubt.

And yes MIsha I may have still made the criticism with a stick in hand.

  • I have no stick and I don't care. I don't have a SB-1 musicblock or a ClareAngel graduation badge or a a SuperDuper Intern badge. I do not have a trio of philosopher dolls. I am OK with those facts too.

I now love Uniquely Prime though, so this broughaha has served a purpose.
Posted 9 months ago by Kookaburra Subscriber! | Permalink
  • While this reaction is predictable, I still find it laughably childish.  People have something you can't have.  Small groups of angry players exist after every decision a company makes.  The argument that retention is important applied just as much to those players who lost irreplaceable notes, personal and creative messages that had value to some that could not be measured by any in-game currency.

So they retain one group of players at the expense of another.  They do something extraordinary in response to an extraordinary mistake.  I have no problem with that, and I find this resulting rage over a toy delicious.

If you leave over it, you leave over it.  There's players clamoring to get in at relaunch, none of whom will care about dusty sticks or probably even hear about them until they've been playing for months.
Posted 9 months ago by Red Sauce Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Well I do hope that fiber will be available some other way.
Posted 9 months ago by AwesomeCardinal2000 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think everyone who is playing at a given time should have the OPPORTUNITY to get everything that is available at that time. For example, the chocolate bunny was only available to those players who were around when it came out, but not everyone who was here at the time got one. Still, everyone had an equal chance at it. Does that make it any less desirable? No. Does it eliminate most of the bad feelings from people who did not get one? Yes.

The stick was given to players whose items went missing, presumably whether or not they noticed it and reported them missing or not. Some didn't even know they had items missing and they still received the stick. So what were they being compensated for? The missing items were already returned. They had no ill-effects from missing them, since they hadn't even been aware of their absence. They did nothing to "earn" the stick other than being affected by a bug.

I disagree with the "elitist" claims, but I do think this was a bad decision on TS's part. They should have anticipated the reaction of essentially rewarding one "class" of players by giving them a unique item. If they felt they needed to compensate those players, there are many rare items that they could have given them, without producing something that "will be useful in the future" but that nobody else can have. Any of the dolls would have been great, for example, or even a trophy, as someone already suggested.

As to the "it's only a stick" argument - that is true. And this is only a game, and they are only pixels. (I think) we are all aware of this. That doesn't mean that people don't have a right to an opinion or that we shouldn't ask TS to evaluate, at the very least, their decision making process.

  • A trophy would have been far better, this way it cant be traded/swapped/given away for secrit back alley behind-the-dumpster lovin (that im famous for, group rates available).

Making an item that can be sold only makes folks want to hoard them or profit from them, imo.

A trophy would be displayed and folks could enjoy it together.
Posted 9 months ago by ☣ elf ☣ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm sure it will be -- likely from foxes or sloths.

I'd like to think that Tiny Speck did anticipate this reaction but doesn't believe players are entitled to obtain every item; therefore, they do not actually care about retaining players that disagree.
Posted 9 months ago by Red Sauce Subscriber! | Permalink
  • A few of the wealthier players have set the bar very high; and to my knowledge at least one sale has already been made, I'm sure that works out to some kind of advantage for the person who sold the stick.

So saying it gives the player no advantage is incorrect.
Posted 9 months ago by Token☆ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Quick question, are only the players that have the stick able to pick up the fiber it 'discharges' or can some random player that doesn't have a stick be able to pick it up too?  Seems that 'glorious' fiber is likely to be able to be picked up by anyone who is in the area at the time...not just the player with the stick (Granted, the player with a stick might only use it in a solitary situation...but given this is an MMO/Social game...sort of defeats the purpose)...so being the owner of a stick doesn't make them any more special, per se...if anything, it levies an additional responsibility that they now have to go out in public and share the fun with others, and then anyone can pick up the fiber...and frankly, who's to say the fiber is actually going to be useful in the future...there is only a promise of it 'might be'...given this...the stick frankly is no more valuable than a trophy or a doll...just different...and honestly, I think it's pretty cool that it is something unique vice a trophy that others could look at, but do nothing to interact with...this is now something, like an SB1 block, that players will be able to interact with others in the game to give them something they can't get themselves...

ETA: so, what advantage does that give to players that can sell it for currants where there are already not enough currant sinks in the game for the amount that players can gather/earn themselves?!  Oh, goody I have a bazillion currants that I can't spend on anything...really, this is a great 'advantage'?  Give me yet another break...

  • If my stuff got wizziped, and all I got was a stick that shot a dust bunny that I only ever saw once, I'd post a thread exactly like this.

Because a stick that shoots a critter, doesn't exactly hold the same value as say a letter with the proclamations of love from someone you well, love.

The only thing of worth in my inventory are those moments that if lost, I could never get back.

And furthermore, if my inventory was cleared, and received a stick, I would just drop it in some random street. Because I honestly wouldn't be able to not be angry.

    tl:dr Can't replace memories with a stick.

I could easily outbid most people here, not all.  I don't want the stick, not important to me.  If you would like to be able to be one of the "advantaged", go out and earn it, like I did, and they did.  Don't hate because you don't have, especially when you could if you really wanted to.  Life and Glitch aren't fair, they are what you make them.

  • I apologize.  I thought everyone was getting this.  Had I known that some will not have it, I would have found a different way to express my appreciation.

I think it is a nice consolation prize for those of us who lost items and were traumatized by the event.  Some people lost things that cannot be replaced so maybe this is not enough for them.  I lost 21 bags from my Cabinet including some party bags that I worked hard to fill for my party on Sunday.  As far as I can tell I got everything back.  My tele scripts, however, were blank and will remain so - no a big loss for me but for some it was.  I was so upset when I discovered so many items missing that I thought I would have a stroke and had to go to bed.  So, even though I got most items back, I feel much better having received the stick and I do appreciate it.  If you did not get one, it may yet come.  I am certain that there will be a way for you to get the Fibers later if you don't get the stick.

  • Just curious how many don't perceive this to be a problem have played a game where an economy was laid to utter waste due to rare items? Runescape in the OP is a good example, and Runescape is a game where existing resources mostly get shuffled from one person to another - so coins from one player for goods from another, rinse, repeat, very little new coin through harvesting of unlimited resources and vendor trashing, and still rares caused the type of rampant inflation that has heads of government whimpering in corners. Take Glitch without visible means of getting currants back out of the system yet inexhaustable ways of continuously injecting more and more and more currants into the game, and you bet you have the potential for a problem that is going to permeate far beyond the price paid for those rares, but across the prices of all items bought and sold.

TS experienced an unexpected problem in their attempts to make gameplay better - it happens. But unless we as a community think that a Bug is the kind of thing that has people say in Global chat that they wish THEY had lost stuff in order to get the Dusty Stick (mind, it boggles) an "oops" and a "sorry" really ought to be sufficient compensation - if you absolutely have to go beyond that a promise that you will try to never do it again maybe?

In response to the OP--i didn't get a stick and, after a 5 minutes of being "blah" about it, I got over it--not gonna pay for one. I see your point, most certainly.  Particularly when there have been, I'm sure, numerous instances of times when a player had some sort of bug occur that caused them extra work or distress yet they received no special item. That being said, I guess it goes back to the same argument of "no 2011 Glitchmas yeti gift" that some people made...since they dont *have* to give us anything, I grumble to myself and move along.

What makes you believe that this item will be different?  Remember that both of those are even more rare than this stick is.  And that the SB-1 is, so far*, only available if a dev gives it to you as a gift.

As for asking for a promise that you will try to never do it again, um, you really think that they know how to not make errors that break the game for some people?  If so, we wouldn't need to be in beta.  They could do all this without ever making a mistake.

    *Theoretically, there is another way.
