iPad

Oh noes! How will I get to play this on my iPad with no Flash Player? I love you Apple, but this just isn't fair!

  • The future iphone version should work on it.

  • Tingly: Unless you know something I don't, I'm unable to articulate just how unlikely I think that will be ;).
Posted 3 years ago by julian Subscriber! | Permalink
  • as julian implies, it is highly unlikely that either the iPhone or the iPad will ever support flash player.

there is, however, a chance that glitch could be played on either device, since adobe flash has the capability now of exporting files as iphone apps.

flash exported iphone/ipad apps aren't typically of the same quality, performance and polish as native cocoa touch apps, but are a possible option at least, for playing the game on these devices.
Posted 3 years ago by striatic Subscriber! | Permalink
  • that said, glitch is already pushing the limits of flash on the desktop and the interface, even parts of it, probably wouldn't translate very well to either device.

it might be better if native apps were created to play aspects of the game that make sense in a mobile context, like garden tending. or hopefully something more interesting than that : ]

  • I could swear I read something somewhere about a mobile version of the game or a portion of the game being developed for the iPhone...It almost made me want to buy one. Goin' to find where i read that...

  • "Butterfield: In the ideal future, we would like to have it be playable across all kinds of platforms. At first it will only work in a browser on a PC, but we will have companion applications for mobile — so iPhone and Android — that give you a more limited amount of gameplay but allow you to kind of interact with the game without having the whole client open. Because it’s massively multiplayer and you’re encountering other people, talking to friends or strangers, it’s tough to play without a keyboard in front of you, because that’s the way people talk. But if, for example, you’re participating in an auction, you should be able to use the iPhone app for that sort of thing; or if there’s a local election happening or some other asynchronous social interactions, that kind of stuff can happen in a mobile app."

  • so many words to say what I implied with 8 ;)
Posted 3 years ago by Tingly Claus Subscriber! | Permalink
  • If indeed Glitch wants to covers all mobile devices and social networking platforms, then some sort of iPhone/iPad app will come eventually... Even if I just get limited access I will be happy.
Otherwise I'm going to have to drag myself up from the sofa and walk the ten paces to my desktop. Phew, I got exhausted just typing that.

  • "so many words to say what I implied with 8 ;)"

yeah, your eight words were highly confusing. more than one of us thought you meant a future version of the iPad or iPhone. more words, or better use of your 8, would have been helpful.

further, it is in no way irrelevant to discuss what the 'future iphone version' may or may not do, and how it might be ported to the device.
Posted 3 years ago by striatic Subscriber! | Permalink
  • ...and to add to striatic's points - I don't care about a 'future iphone version'... I have an iPad NOW! :-p

More than anything I just think the game would LOOK awesome on the iPad. /geek

  • I wanted to give you hope for the future. If you don't care about a future iphone/pad version, I better not catch you using it! heh

And to striatic, now that he ruined a perfectly good tease, the 8 words were ok. Only one of these makes sense.
    - The future iphone version [of Glitch] should work on it.
    - The future iphone version [of the iphone] should work on it.
    - The future iphone version [of the ipad] should work on it.
Even if it is misread as, "The future version of the iphone should work on it," it still falls just shy of sense.

looks like porting aspects of the game over to android devices should be a lot easier: blogs.adobe.com/conversatio...

  • hm...

    smokescreen.us/

a flash player, written in javascript and html5, that works on the iPad [and iphone, apparently]

    interesting!
Posted 3 years ago by striatic Subscriber! | Permalink
  • meh. it basically only converts timeline animation.

so fine for ads, probably useless for glitch.

    oh well.
Posted 3 years ago by striatic Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The whole game: still probably not (though not *never* - just not in the next 12-18 months). But, an initial iPhone app is already in (very early) development.

  • "an initial iPhone app is already in (very early) development."

    yay!

i know that i would play a lot more if there was some iPhone component.

    like, maybe twice as much.

  • @stoot - I'm working on an html5 game that i'm modelling on glitch. If you guys gave me some API docs I could try render some levels in the canvas, try for performance. :)

  • Ohh, this game on the iPad would be phenomenal.

  • annnd .. now apple is relaxing restrictions on cross compilers ..

    www.metafilter.com/95569/Ap...

so glitch could be compiled for iPad with no problems it seems.

would probably need some adjustments to the control interface, but much easier to cross compile the game than to re-write it.

i wonder how glitch would run on an iPad. hm.
Posted 2 years ago by striatic Subscriber! | Permalink
  • that would make my iPad complete! Glitch (oh and stupid BookFace games) is the only thing I need my laptop for...
Posted 2 years ago by onelittlebird Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Pfft to apple. I bet glitch will play nicer with the android interface.
Posted 2 years ago by Mursock Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Mursock That has nothing to do with the topic at hand, mainly whether this will ever work on iPad. As much fun as a holy war is, it won't answer the question.
Posted 2 years ago by Edward Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Edward, sorry I'm not trying to proselytize...I didn't know that this post had to be strictly ipad or iphone related. Sheesh. Either way the developers have a lot of platform compatibility issues ahead of them.
Posted 2 years ago by Mursock Subscriber! | Permalink
  • "Either way the developers have a lot of platform compatibility issues ahead of them."

that's why i bumped the topic. coz the new cross-compiler rules could very much reduce those issues.

  • Ipad users could start a facebook group along the lines of "apple should support flash on the ipad & iphone" and see if you can get a few hundred thousand likes. Maybe apple will listen then and add it. :)

  • I don't actually *need* Flash on my iPad... and after what Jobs said about Adobe, it will never happen.
html5 is gaining ground anyway, rather than being dependent on a 3rd party plug-in.
Posted 2 years ago by Spatula Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yeah... they should make Glitch future-proof :)
Posted 2 years ago by Hburger Subscriber! | Permalink
  • "apple should support flash on the ipad & iphone"

they already do. not flash in the browser but apps compiled from flash/flex dev environments.

"and after what Jobs said about Adobe, it will never happen."

it already has, by virtue of apple's relaxed cross-compiler policy. just not flash in the browser.

runtime performance might be too terrible for glitch to run smoothly in a flash derived app, but it is at least a possibility now.

you can also compile from flash for android. tho it's all privateish beta for now.

  • I played a bit on my iPad last test using Puffin. It was slow and frustrating in certain spots, but it was fine for puttering around in my house.
Posted 19 months ago by leah Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @ leah: I am an excellent putterer, both in RL and in GL-----LOL Where can I find Puffin? I would love to install it on my iPAD. Thanks!
Posted 19 months ago by GreyGoose Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Rachel, here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/puffin-web-browser/id406239138?mt=8

I use it for browsing as well. It has tabbed browsing and shows full versions of sites. It is a bit slow though and it'll drain your data plan REALLY quickly if you're using it with 3G.

  • I used "splashtop" during the last test to do the same thing: you are basically manipulating your desktop/laptop from the iPad. It wasn't great, kinda slow, but I could play.
Posted 19 months ago by Helcat Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Splashtop? Argh, it's annoying, my little sister basically uses it to annoy me. First she sneakily opens it on the computer, then when I'm doing something she takes control of the computer through our shared iPod Touch. Argh. Annoying.
Posted 19 months ago by KitkatCat Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I use both splashtop and iswifter and although laggy they work fine on the ipad.
Posted 19 months ago by HarleyQuin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @HarleyQuin have you tried to climb using iswifter? I tried it with Puffin and it just did not work at all. Played great [if a little slow] but could not climb at all :)
