Glitch being open all the time

Maybe Glitch doesn't have to be open all the time when it is finished. I really like how Glitch is sometimes open and sometimes not, it kind of makes the game more fun...anyone else think the same?

  • For a company waning to make money, they have to be open all the time. They'll want to to be accessible WHENEVER, across the globe, someone wants to play.

  • If it is more fun for you to not be able to access the game sometimes, you can install an application on your computer that blocks certain sites.  One of them blocks sites after you have spent a certain amount of time at that site each day.  Another lets you set your own lock-out timer.

  • Just because it's open doesn't mean you have to play!

Seriously, I'm looking forward to it being open all the time so that I don't feel like I ZOMG MUST PLAY when it is open. Sometimes, I keep going past the point where I'm really enjoying myself because I know it'll be unavailable soon.

I might even log less playtime when it's open 24/7, but I will very likely log in for a little while every day.  Although I understand why it's up & down now for testing? I think I'd hate it if that was the model.

(of course, servers going down for maintenance is part of being an MMO, so I totally expect that from time to time, but yeah, the game should be available almost always when it's live, IMO)

  • There is no technologies for servers which would eliminates bottle necking and down time for maintenance.

i don't think you understand at all why noseoen finds it special and more fun to have test sessions rather than continuous play.

  • I do agree that it makes it feel more special... but it would be a horrible business model.
And, yes. It WILL be down at times... but one certainly it is not at the same 3 days up, 4 down.

  • Well, maybe there will be forced breaks? In a lot of games, you can only play while you have energy. In Glitch you go to Hell when you die, and it's fairly easy to recoup, but maybe once it goes live, there will be a point in which your character is just too pooped to continue for that day?

    No idea, just speculating.

  • When the game is open all the time, and we have got over the "Gosh Glitch is open, must play!" syndrome, how do we keep our piggies and trees alive and healthy? How often do we have to go in? Remember the recent test where our piggies were dead and the trees weak because the devs didn't switch them off?
When we go off to the seaside for a couple of weeks do we have to take our laptops with us? (Honestly sweetheart, I'm just checking things in the office...)

  • Any game that requires you to log in on a schedule controlled by the developers is going to lose thousands of frustrated customers who have  real-life responsibilities.

Unless my animals and my character 'pause' when I log out of the game, then it won't be worth coming back to.

  • A resounding "NO!"
It sucks that the game isn't even open half the time.
The devs needs to strike while the iron is hot or be left out in the cold.
While Glitch is great game, I feel that while it is in beta I am helping Tiny Speck in it's quest for internet success and the big bucks that come with by playing and spreading generous (very!) word of mouth.
The least they can do is meet me halfway.
Not being able to have (at the very least) a tentative schedule of when the game will be available makes me feel like a 6 year old being marched around the shopping mall by my parents; that is, not in control.

  • As a tester, I'm a volunteer who is on hand when the devs need something tested.  Whenever that is.  There is no way that they can predict how smoothing their work will go and when they'll be ready for us to try to break things again.

If you are uncomfortable with the devs only opening the game when they need us to test, then you may want to wait a while and come back when the game has gone live 24/7.   There are 10s of thousands of us testing, so there's no need for them to meet anyone half way.

  • Anyone that has a full-time job outside of the home with no access to internet or upgrade Flash browsers can appreciate enough time without the game. I am one of those people. I want the game open 24/7/365/Forever so that I CAN play when I am able.

  • In the immortal words of Neil Young:
    Don't be alarmed at me
    It's so hard to wait.

I beg to differ. With what Tiny Speck has done here means the the above statement is no longer true. It used to be, but not so because TS is re-writing the rules. Once Glitch goes live, it has the capacity to never, ever be shut off again. You may not realize it, but Tiny Speck does an incredible amount of maintenance and bug fixing when the world is awake already. If I'm not mistaken, the servers (plural) are load balanced, and a given number of then can be 'down for maitenance' with the load being push off onto other servers until the maintenance cycle completes.

I really am looking forward to a live 24/7 environment. The 'wait' is not a part of the enjoyment of the game, but I will agree it's part of the excitement in the testing process. I long for the day when I can get up, play a little Glitch, go about my day, come home and relax with a little Glitch, and basically have a normal level of interaction with a video game. My work/school/family schedule changes with the season so without a 24/7 availability after launch I'd be asking for my money back and looking for entertainment with a more suitable offering.

  • I can't wait till Glitch is open whenever I'm ready to play.  Of course, right now, I wait for that text message.... 40404  Glitch is Open..... and it just makes my day!!  That's the excitement of Alpha and Beta testing.  All normal things (eating/sleeping/washing) go out the window when I'm off from work and testing is open.  But when we go live, and I can have access whenever it's convenient, I will be a much more normal (and clean) person.  :-)

  • The wait is horrid. It is killing me that it is not even averaging the 50/50 time they wanted for beta lately (at least I don't call 2.5 days open/4.5 closed, as in the past two weeks, 50/50). I can't wait until it is available 24/7 so I can play when convenient as kat65 says. I think it's nice that you are enjoying the on/off nature because at least SOMEONE is, though:) lol

  • +1 to RM! I'm scratching my head at the more than 50/50 and it's been more like 30/70 after that statement...sigh...just want the reset to come and to be 24/7 so that the flurry for opening day resources will die down and I can get back to my regularly scheduled life...while playing Glitch when I want to not, when the game is open.

  • So far I've managed to offset the Glitchless days with a huge backload of casual games accrued during the glory days of FS. Unlike most people, I have more free time during my weekdays. Weekends are usually filled with family oriented get-togethers and errand runs with my DH....so it will be wonderful when Glitch evolves to full maturity and I will get to play and play and play and, oh yeah, play.
    Whenever.
Even if it's only for 15 minutes or so.
    Or 9 1/2 hours.
    At 02:37.
    On tuesday.
    Next month.
For the rest of my life.
Or next year, whichever comes first.
    :o)

  • Yeah, I'm going to be offsetting the wait with Zelda 3DS when it comes out this Sunday! That and I'm extremely social... so I'm always out, lol.
