Question on Unlearning

Okay, so this is probably a stupid question with a "duh" answer, but -

If I have Tinkering 5; if I unlearn Tinkering 1, what exactly happens?  Do I lose the ability to repair tools, since that's what Tinkering 1 gets me?

Or if I have the higher level skills, can I unlearn lower level ones and not lose anything?

  • Did you try it? When I do, it doesn't give me Tinkering I as an option to un-learn, only Tinkering V.

  • You cannot unlearn a skill until you have unlearned all the skills that are based on that skill.

So, to unlearn Tinkering 1, you would (at a minimum) have to unlearn Tinkering 5, 4, 3, and 2 first.

  • Unlearning is the the reverse of learning
In other words, in order to learn Tinkering 5 you must first learn Tinkering 1-4 and then, if you decide to unlearn Tinkering 1 you must first unlearn 5-2

  • Some things you can do in the game without learning the skill.  But you use a lot of energy, and sometimes you don't get any results, because, you know, you don't know how to do it.

  • tiggy: nope, if you unlearn them you "don't know" how to use those skills anymore (WindBorn is right, though, that some things don't require you to know a skill). Unlearning is mostly (or solely?) for managing learning time and reducing Brain Capacity.

  • yes thats what i was wondering, i only have one thing left to learn and ir wants 2 months or something, my brain is well overtaxed , but i dont want to unlearn things i use and discover suddenly i cant smelt  or like that you know.

  • I'd recommend getting some iMG and purchasing Brain Capacity upgrade cards, then you don't have to Unlearn anything :). Your Brain Capacity caps at 60, though, so after 60 skills the time needed to learn a new skill will always increase.

  • Brain upgrades are a waste if you only have one skill left to learn. Just queue it up and let it run, it'll be learned whenever. In the mean time you can do many other things in game without the need to gimp some other skill you already spent the time to learn.

Note that unlearning takes time too. If you spend time unlearning skill X to speed up skill Y, it's not clear that the total time will be less, and at the end you'll only know skill Y and have lost skill X.

  • I foolishly decided to "unlearn" blockmaking. Of course now I need it & can't use my machine.
So I'm learning it again. My own fault for not finding out exactly how this works.

  • I say get the Brain Upgrades even if you only have I skill left (just don't make it a priority). One, we can expect many new skills to come, or at least a few. And two it gets those cards out of rotation and you will start getting many more of the keepable cards as well as whatever new upgrades that TS decides to launch.

  • l ve been getting the upgrades  but their pretty random. i planned on just finnishing the skills , but time seems to add on to the learning time as a brain tax so i started wonderung about unlearning. i don t think i m willing to forfeit skills though it  just seems like a dodgy deal. thanks for all the good advice.

  • @tiggy - also, once you start learning a skill, go donate to the primary giant for that skill.  don't donate all the way to an emblem, tho.  donate to just short of emblem, then cash in those points towards learning the skill.  this helps immensely.  get lots of ehsp to make those donations count!
