A message to the people of Alakol. (And whoever else happens to pass through)

EDIT: I know that most of the wood trees are gone now. Let's try and keep only one or two at a time, but keep them alive!

Hi.
So I know you love wood trees and we shouldn't cut them down, but they are taking over the whole area! I live in Navran Dissent, and all I see are bubble trees and wood trees. What happened to all the bean trees? I mean I love wood trees, and I completely support them staying alive, but do we really need tons of them everywhere? I mean what else can we use them for? Splanking and Salmon. And one or two wood trees SHOULD be enough. But I've seen maybe 5 or 6 around, and tons in housing  with people writing notes telling us we can't harvest them. There's TWO in Isalan Interval. Why?!?! I'm not saying I'm a wood tree hater, but can we PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stop planting so many? Also, please don't hold this against me; I love the trees, just it's bothering me that so many are popping up everywhere. Thank you.

  • If you feel wood trees are taking over, just eliminate a few.  Or help cut down on them in the long run by harvesting them whenever you pass them by.

Thanks so much for being understanding for people's love of wood trees, though — and please, don't eliminate too many! :)

  • I could be wrong, but I think there's a quest or something requiring a fully grown wood tree. Least that's what someone told me they were doing when I asked why they'd killed off a bubble and replanted with wood.

  • Don't worry... I won't kill them all. I didn't realize there weren't that many before... Well I hope we just don't get overpopulated by wood trees now :D

  • There is a quest that requires players to get a super(?) harvest from each of the different kinds of trees.
Posted 17 months ago by Millie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • That must be really hard to do... but it makes sense :)
Posted 17 months ago by Princess Pufflepuff Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I got very lucky and got the super harvest on the first wood tree I found when I had that quest.  A friend recommended getting it up to full size first, which I did, but I'm not sure if that actually affected things or not.

  • You don't need to get a super harvest on a wood tree, just a maximum harvest (which is 120 planks), obtainable from any wood tree with 4 branches on it. The only issue is getting a wood tree with 4 branches - either you're watering and petting for the better part of a Glitch day or you use an entire bottle of Fertildust (Lite).

  • There is a quest which requires superharvest on a wood tree, not just max.

Even so I see no reason to kill almost every tree in an  area to plant only one variety whatever that may be. Wood trees in particular don't last long if everyone that passes harvests and does nothing to replace what they take from it. I've found the only place to have a wood tree for more than a short time is in my own garden.

  • sounds like a dumb quest :(

  • If there was a project... I would have killed a few trees

  • OH MY SPRIGGAN! Where have these trees been?? I've been trying the "One, Two, Tree, Four, Six, Eight" quest for days and keep failing because I've never been able to find a wood tree!
Posted 17 months ago by thatsmybot Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I've been definitely missing the bean trees...
Posted 17 months ago by Kira Bajira Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @thatsmybot They all keep disappearing now. But they will pop up eventually. There should be a few in Alakol now.

@Kira Bajira I know!!! I was trying to make some Awesome Stew, but I only had 4 beans. I went outside and all there was was bubble and wood.

  • It's actually kinda annoying. Finding a wood tree is like trying to find a patch. Hopeless :/
PS: I feel bubbles, not wood is taking over the place.
Posted 17 months ago by KitkatCat Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Agreed. Bubbles everywhere in Alakol and Heights. I was having trouble finding Spice yesterday, and thankfully East and West Spice actually had Spice in them. I remember a time when that wouldn't have been true. And I only saw maybe 10 bean trees over the course of like 50 streets.
Posted 17 months ago by Jhennauchan Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Certain trees will not grow in certain areas, spice trees will not grow in Alakol, The Forest,  Heights or The Meadows, and probably other areas unless it is in your own home. Same thing applies to bubble, egg, fruit and and wood trees, they only grow in certain areas too. Bean trees will grow in more areas than most so balance is needed in all areas.
Posted 17 months ago by Leithwyn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I've been working this test to get some more beans back in Alakol....Think it's at least a little more balanced though. My feeling is that wood trees are best for back yards, but I understand that doesn't work for everyone.

  • I actually planted 6 spice trees in Chakra Phool, but by this morning, two had already been replaced with gas.
Posted 17 months ago by Blitz Subscriber! | Permalink
  • When I bought a house in Alakol, there were fruit trees and bean tree's and since they are both beautiful I bought a house there. After the test; before this last one, all fruit tree's were gone and the bubble tree's stand alone! Thats all I find now with the exception of one or two wood tree's.
I understand there is a Alakol Home Owners Association and wonder if this Association can work with the Developers to get a more balanced group of tree's? Regarding the "tree's grow in certain area's" answer; they grew there before? and Developers can do "anything they choose" after all they are developing the game!
LOL, just my opinion!  aww the cherry tree's have such beautiful blossoms!

  • I totally agree with you Joy, all I see is bubble trees. I actually needed a wood tree and I couldn't find one... I wish I had had that quest a few days ago... All I can find are bubble trees. I was trying to make some Awesome Stew and I had to go to Groddle Meadow to get enough. At least theres a subway in Alakol :D

  • So! I went and looked through the Locations script.

    Here's what I found:
    6 dirt patches
    19 wood trees
    29 paper trees
    42 spice trees
    49 gas plants
    96 egg plants
    203 bubble trees
    298 bean trees
    442 fruit trees

I think I can safely say we could stand to have a few more wood trees around :p

  • I think this has to do something with the "i hate trees" group.  They seem to be replacing all the trees they kill with wood trees for some reason.

I agree with you though Princess.  Except for the occasional quest, they're pretty much worthless.

  • there's gotta be more patches than that.... what with all the new streets, like the one off of alakol...

Personally I don't understand the overwhelming necessity of bubble trees. I frequently use bubbles when I'm making drinks (I believe the earthshaker or flaming humbaba? one of those two to sate my mining needs) or for ix-braised meat, but I use beans far more than I do bubbles, so would really appreciate having 'em back!
Posted 16 months ago by tealhair Subscriber! | Permalink
  • However there is one plus to wood trees--those who can't use poison yet can use it to do the seedling quest, since you can harvest and clear a wood tree.... again, though, I'd prefer if people just asked nicely on global chat for help.

  • I have three trees in my little home's backyard: a gas tree, a spice tree, and a wood tree. I pet them and water them every chance I get. I am curiously attached to all the living things in my home...piggies, chickens, butterflies, my garden, my trees...I can not fathom an "I hate trees" group. Maybe I'm missing something, but if a tree offends you to the point that you can't stand to look at it...maybe this is the wrong game?
Posted 16 months ago by SuziMio Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Originally dirt was very rare, and one of the best places to get it was from tree plots, so many people went around killing them so they could get the dirt necessary to build new streets. That's not so much of a problem now that dirt piles exist. It's a sand box game, and I'm sure there are plenty of people who enjoy running around killing trees. Luckily there are more people who enjoy those trees being there. From what I've seen there's plenty of everything, so I'd say that the tree-killers aren't doing much harm.

  • Not all trees. Just some. I love spice and cheeries personally.
Posted 16 months ago by KitkatCat Subscriber! | Permalink
  • What is the Locations script Millie refers to?  Will it tell me which streets have the largest numbers of a particular type of tree?

    Thanks for any info!
Posted 16 months ago by Hawkwell Subscriber! | Permalink
  • On the "I hate trees"group: we don't hate trees.
We merely don't mind that trees switch patches, that people get a chance to plant new trees. Make that beanseasoner usefull, create some new exitement ingame. It's a bit of roleplay as well, to counter all the treeghugging and ooshiecooshiemooshie-ness. I get a bit rebellious if it gets overly cuddly. So that group can be hired to remove trees. For instance, if you think that there are too many woodtrees, we'll come clear it for you, for a price. (Woodtrees are very expensive to remove though! Bean trees are cheapest.)
There's like 1200 trees. How bad is it if there are about 30 of them replanted every day? Planting a tree is even more fun then petting one. People enjoy planting trees.

On wood trees again: They are discriminated. They are a minority. They are fragile. It's ok to have tons of other trees, but because woodtrees aren't "usefull" people like them less. Does everything have to be usefull? How about diversity, aesthetics.

Anyway, I haven't heard any rumours that La Resistance as a group was responsible for this. I know, as we are known amongst people we will always be pointed at. Real treehaters just let us take the blame.

  • See this thread for info on the location checker Greasemonkey script: http://beta.glitch.com/forum/general/3040/

it adds a dropdown to the locations page to filter the list of streets by what resources are on the street..

  • @Varaeth - Thanks!!!

@Mariamele - And thanks to you for your perspective on trees.  As a newbie, I found pretty much everything in your response to be new info.  I had been assuming that keeping trees healthy was good; trees dying was bad.  You have widened my horizons considerably!
Posted 16 months ago by Hawkwell Subscriber! | Permalink
  • fwiw, I find bean trees to be super blah - not attractive and so ubiquitous across Ur that it totally bums me out to see them in beautiful alakol. Would love to see cherries or gas instead!
Posted 16 months ago by katlazam Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think trees should age and die. Maybe have a fixed time from seedling to old age, or a certain number of harvests. I love the trees and hate to see them calling for help when they've been poisoned, but we need to have patches to replant in, and a use for our bean seasoners.

  • i have seen wood trees in alakol. i live there! but i only saw 2!
the most common tree in alakol is a bubble tree....
what shall we do about wood trees and bubble trees?
    they keep popping up
what about other types of trees??
we need to plant more trees!!
Posted 16 months ago by GiaTori Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm so glad I came back to read the replies! I can see the logic behind killing trees now...but I still don't want to personally do it D:Thank you for patiently explaining the other point of view for me.
Posted 16 months ago by SuziMio Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Don't let the rhetoric and propeganda of  La Resistance sway you.  Stay strong people.  We know trees are the life blood of Ur.

Sure, our bean seasoners get dusty from lack of use.  But isn't that a GOOD thing?  Are you sad when the trigger on your pistol gets rusty?  Or we forget how to file a lawsuit?  No.

  • We could definitely use more fruit trees in Alakol. And spice but that won't grow in the region, right?
Posted 16 months ago by Rock Opera Jr Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Don't tell anyone I said this!
[*Hug Linnea*...That's what I like, some roleplaying resistance to us :) ]

GiaToria: Not every tree can be planted in every region, sadly.
And yes, I feel guilty poisoning a tree. But then I have a real use for my drinks too finally...

  • Oh thanks for having been able to put a new perspective on the life cycle of trees. Ofcourse, you don't have to love us, or hire us.
(But if you do, befriend me and send me an ingame mail. My lips are sealed, we'll never tell who hired us! If you are interested in joining, just befriend me and say a magic word and an invite comes your way!)

Princess Pufflepuff, as I said, I don't think La Resistance is behind it, but you can always hire us to remove wood trees in favour of bubble trees, our loyalty is where the cash is ;)
Posted 16 months ago by Miriamele Subscriber! | Permalink
  • haha i think its fine... If we really need a tree, we can grow a new one. I think I might replace a couple of the bubble trees with bean trees, but that will be it. If anyone else wants replacing, they can do it themselves.
Posted 16 months ago by Princess Pufflepuff Subscriber! | Permalink
  • But but.... We want that assignment! We need cash!
Posted 16 months ago by Miriamele Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Sorry :D I don't mind trees that much, I just don't like when people replace all the trees with ones we don't actually need that many of.
Posted 16 months ago by Princess Pufflepuff Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Who keeps planting the bubble trees?  I killed one off in Dolfan Vex and planted a bean tree, next time I pass by bean tree is gone and another bubble tree had been planted.  So makes me wonder who is benefiting from all these bubble trees?  Wish they would just stop it, we need more bean trees.  Bean trees are getting harder and harder to find.
