I like vendor items being phased out!

I think it's great. When I first started playing, you could buy seasoned beans at a vendor. Then that stopped. Now the tree poison and antidote have stopped being vendor-only items, as well as hooch.

I wonder if TS is going to gradually phase out other vendor items. It would be neat to have bee hives around the world - like only in community gardens for instance - and you'd have to go there to collect honey.

Or the giants could start creating olive trees (like the paper trees) that you have to find to get olive oil. And you could harvest mushrooms in caves.

Salmon! Wouldn't you enjoy having to go fishing to get salmon? I would.

  • I think that sounds like a good idea!  You will actually have to work to get what you want, instead of " I am going to go buy some honey at the vendor. "  I think this game is interesting and great fun, but if they took out vendors, i would be happier.  It gives me something to do, you know?

  • I believe the original intention was to create a player vendor system, which is why they are doing it in phases so the community can wrk towards that goal. I'm thrilled with it, it will give us a reason to make stuff. :-)

  • I Love fishing.... I could fish for hours. Just like mining. It would be funny if every once in awhile we had to throw one back cause of its small size.. We could get badge for catching a whopper. haha

  • So long as there's reasonable vending, yes - but important would be player orders.  I want someone to say "I want a Tinkertool!" so that I have a little direction.  Street Projects are great for disrupting the cycles we get into and pulling us into a cooperative mode, but they take a lot of effort on TS's part.

  • +9001 on this.

I'm very excited for a future day when I log in and the vendors are just . . . gone.

Though I'd like it if they created cubimals for the different vendor models as mementos of where the game came from.

  • If you go back through tons of posts and interviews: Yes. The idea is to gradually ween the economy of vendor sold items and make them player produced. Part of the reason they are doing it slowly is so that there are enough players out there to fill all the niches that need to be filled. We need high end tool makers and farmers and distillers.

We can see right now what happens when there is a gap: there are not enough folks with potionmaking to make and sell poison. But that's okay. A few days without tree killing won't damage anyone (even if you have a quest that needs it.... just wait a bit, do something else).

    We live in exciting times.

  • To be honest, as a high end toolmaker and farmer, I don't see the demand that would make it worth my time.  Since an exchange about a month ago, I'm being patient, but it's really rough to know what to produce.

  • I very much hope some vendors stay open. I do not want to depend on auctions (or anyone) for anything, not selling, not buying.
    I like being super independent!

  • I think there will still be NPC vendors around (so some old staff statements said, if I'm not too crazy and forgetful), just not nearly as many and not with the advanced (and perhaps also lacking some of the less advanced) stuff. I think they wanted to have the ones they kept around be something more like Uncle Friendly and his shop rather than a floating being on every single street.

This phasing is definitely a part of a long time plan they've had for a more player driven market, as LB-O stated.

And there will be player market booths or something coming as well (also hinted at in various posts/interviews/pictures), so it doesn't seem like anyone will have to depend on the auction for anything- just have to depend on players for some things. Even now, you don't have to depend on the auction for anything. You can still set up trades with people. Granted, that's not being independent entirely... but it does remove the auction from the equation.

  • If you're depending on NPC vendors, you're not super independent.  What difference would it make if the stuff you have to buy from fake people you just bought from real people instead?  Jeesh.

Another thing they've mentioned is making prices fluctuate and vary region to region at the vendors that remain in the game based on supply and demand, which will eventually make it incredibly inefficient to use vendors to sell.

I wish you luck, ScillyGirl5, with trying to play an online multiplayer game like no one else exists.  But when they inevitably make these changes that they've promised that will put a crimp in your playstyle, if it drives you away, I can recommend some single player games and  some chat programs that, combined, might scratch the same itch.

    Jeesh.

  • I agree, and except for a very few items, I hope they continue on the path to a circular system of player generated and absorbed goods. It will encourage players to engage and embrace the economic system of the virtual world, as has been shown to be very effective in other MMOs.

I'd like to take that a step further and make tools like watering cans "worn-out" after some relatively but pretty predictable time period or number of uses. Ie now they are repairable forever, and all you need is a tinker tool and the low level skills it requires to operate. Ok so you bought the super soaker. it has what 500 waterings? suppose it "wears out" after 30000. that would produce a need for new cans, but it wouldn't be a horrible crimp on players. you'd get 60 refillls, and then the tool makers would have market for their wares. (numbers are for examples, I'm not sure what an equitable life would be for a can exactly...60 just sounds quasi reasonable to me...that covers what, about a month of real play, or maybe three weeks?

And no, I am not a tool maker and afaik no where near getting the skill (in fact basically a farmer and tree herdsGlitch, so...

  • Yeah, the ability to sell quickly is important to me.

  • @Woochi

Glad to see their are other people playing this game who understand what the first two M's in MMO are supposed to mean.  This post-WoW crap of "everyone alone together" online gamers is killing my sanity.

  • @ Saucelah, there's no need to 'jeesh' me! You play the way you want to play,I play the way I want to play. The keywords in what I wrote earlier are highlighted ~I am saying no thank you to being dependent on others, operative word is 'dependent'. Furthermore 'multi player' to me does not exclude 'single players',on the contrary,it includes them, and I am certain I am not the only one.Multi player simply means multiple players playing at the same time, with or without engaging with others.

  • @ScillyGirl

It's always your choice to play without any reliance on others. Just learn all the skills, purchase (or build) all the tools,  grow every veggie and harvest every cherry and buy only what cannot be created by your own efforts from vendors exclusively. No biggy.

  • I agree, Woochi
~ I just didn't appreciate being sneered at by 'that other person'.

  • Have to agree with ScillyGirl5.  I don't want to lose the vendors buying function.  New players will find it very difficult to make enough money to buy houses I would think if they can't sell to vendors.  The auctions fluctuate wildly and you could wait days for someone to buy stuff.  Meanwhile you are hanging around at a low level.

I have always wanted to have the ability to make everything I need in the game, bees, olive trees, fishing have been in "ideas" forever, sheep, carpetry skills, building skills likewise.  But we need to be able to sell the stuff we produce in our houses and gardens reliably or we will have no opportunity to progress and develop.

  • And I'm sure that's why they've said some vendors will stick around in stores, like Uncle Friendly.

ETA: And until there are better ways of producing your own seeds, I sure hope they at least keep gardening vendors around.
