[not a bug] Unable to finish "Tinker with Your Tool(s)" quest

Having two Tinkertools in your inventory, trying to fix one of them to 100% will always result in "You repaired the Tinkertool to 99 percent." and the Tinkertool's stats to be 199/200. Trying to wear down the Tinkertool and fixing again doesn't help either.

Have a look at the following screen recording that demonstrates the issue:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3813676/tinkertool_stuck_at_99_percent.mov (8 MB) - 1/2 size
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3813676/tinkertool_stuck_at_99_percent_large.mov (23 MB) - full size

This was recorded in Google Chrome 13.0.782.215 on Mac OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) but I tested it on other browsers (Firefox) and OS X 10.7 too with the same result.

The recording is from the last test, but it is still the same in the current version.

  • It's a bit confusing, but not a bug. You need to drag one tinkertool over the other.

  • But this should still be fixed, as dragging Tinkertool 1 over Tinkertool 2 is the same as selecting "Repair" from the context menu of the broken Tinkertool which will only be available if I have a second Tinkertool.

  • AHA! not so.  Check out the skill description for Tinkering III.
"With Tinkering III, the speed of tool repair doubles yet again. Getting speedy! But also, you can use a Tinkertool to repair itself. Talk about snakes swallowing tails ..."

  • This breaks user interface expectations nevertheless. Once one learns the Tinkering skill, one is able to repair tools via the "Repair" command in the context menu of an item (as well as dragging and dropping a tool that needs repairing onto the Tinkertool).

As a user, one would expect to meet the conditions of the quest by simply following the rules one learned so far (in my case, I learned to repair things via the context menu but it never occurred to me to try drag and drop.)

  • Oh, now I understand why that happens. So with the menu option you're telling the Tinkertool to repair itself, and it can't repair itself to 100% (because it gets used up when it repairs itself). It really is absolutely consistent with expected behavior, and there's even a quest to repair a Tinkertool to 100% by using a second Tinkertool.

That being said, it would be less confusing if there was an exception for this one case and an attempt to repair a Tinkertool would use a different Tinkertool if one is available.

  • Buy a second tinkertool, and drag your broken tinkertool to the new tinkertool you just bought. This will make your new tinkertool repair your broken one.
