Feedback on Tutorial and Menus.

One of the more common questions that comes up in Live Help is, "Why can't I visit my friend's street?" or "Why can't my friend visit my street?" and the answer invariably is because one or both of them have not completed the tutorial. However, they are not aware of this fact. As far as I can tell, they have no indication they are ever DOING a tutorial. In fact, early this morning I had a person asking for help in FINDING the tutorial, as he didn't know how to start it. Of course, he WAS actually doing the tutorial, he just did not know that.
Could there be some kind of indicator about that please? Perhaps even something that shows how far they have progressed along the tutorial... something that shows how many steps there are, maybe, and how many steps they have finished already.

As far as menus... it is not obvious that the mood indicator and the iMG cloud are actually buttons that reveal menus. Could you please add some kind of detailing that makes that more obvious? The iMG cloud just looks like a label for the number next to it. Plus, when you open the iMG menu, half the things in it have nothing to do with iMG, which seems confusing to me. What does Go Home or Back to World have to do with iMG? Lots of new players have no idea where those buttons are located, and have to ask in Live Help how to leave their street. It would make more sense to me to have a toggling Home/World button available at all times above the game window. Or a button called GO that opened a little menu for House, Street, Tower (when they have one) and World.
It's great that we have the /home /house /tower /leave commands in the local chat, but players also need to know where these other menu items are located.
Just my two currants.

  • It is also not obvious that the clock is a button.
It's great that we need to explore and try things, but sometimes it could be a little more obvious that there is something to try. In the game, things we can interact with turn blue when we get near them. Around the game window... there's no indication that these things are clickable buttons.

  • One more thing - people often come into Live Help and say "I just got such-and-such trophy, but I don't see it!" because they don't know it went in the Furniture tab of their inventory. Perhaps the screen announcing the trophy should add that it is in the Furniture tab.

  • I would love for newbies to be told that Live Help is not solely for massive technical bugs too. I've had several newbies tell me they didn't ask a question in Live Help because it wasn't necessarily a technical problem they were having.

  • I concur with all of this.  I only knew I could click the clock when I accidentally clicked it once on my phone.

I found the tutorial a confusing and I could not find my way off my street.  Also, while I'm at it, it's kinda hard to find my account info, which subscription I have and what it gives me.

Now that I have my bearings it's cool but I did the tutorial and kinda left the game for a week or so and if all my friends from another game weren't also playing I might not have come back to it.

  • I got my invite a few days ago so have just been through the tutorial. I thought it was absolutely perfect - charming, informative and not too long. There is massive text splashed across the screen explaining everything to you, including how to access the menus,  and with all the free stuff and easy upgrades, it seemed obvious that it was a tutorial. Once you get the minimap upgrade, just looking at the map you can see where the tutorial ends. I don't know if some are just rushing through it and not taking the time to read the text but the only button you need to remember apart from how to move around is "x", which you are clearly told (and shown), with I think the animation showing that it opens from the iMG button.

I only say this because to me, the tutorial is just perfect as it is and making things too obvious when it's already explained to you would, in my opinion, somehow take something away from the experience.

  • I think some people do rush through the Tutorial instead of taking their time and paying attention to the messages and information offered.  As a Greeter I greet people who have just come from the Tutorial but many of them have no idea how to use the Map.  Maybe they need to do more with the Map before leaving the Tutorial.

Also, it seems that a number of them do not understand the Greeter Stick and do not wait for their Greeter to arrive.  This "Stick" thing has happened to me so many times that out of curiosity I said to a new player who called me, "You summoned me, can I help you?".  The reply was, "I don't understand".  They apparently had no idea that the Stick would actually bring someone to help them.  I had not considered this possibility.  I am fairly certain the Stick is explained in the Tutorial but for whatever reason, some players still have no idea what it is for.

  • You get the greeter stick right after leaving the tutorial, if I remember correctly, I think when you are in your house/home street. A message pops up to explain that it's an item for new players to use when stuck or have a problem or something and using it will call a greeter, with a brief explanation about what greeters do.

  • When I first started playing Glitch (a year ago, although I did not return to it for quite some time, so technically still a newbie) and went through the tutorial, I didn't know that the greeter would be an actual player (the concept would seem obvious to those who conceptualized it, but to a new player, it may seem more likely that it would be another "computer character," like the rock). It took me a few moments to understand this after summoning the greeter. As I recall, back then, it wasn't explained in any great detail prior to summoning. So, more explanation on this feature is probably a good idea. :D

Also, just a note about the OP's post, when you said, "Plus, when you open the iMG menu, half the things in it have nothing to do with iMG, which seems confusing to me. What does Go Home or Back to World have to do with iMG?" it made me think of a post on Glitch Strategy that explained the new housing system and referred to the space (both home and home street) as "imagined" places (the whole world is technically imagined, but homes have a certain separation from the rest of Ur). Plus, you spend iMG to cultivate, etc. So, perhaps that is why it is under the iMG menu? But I do agree that it should have a permanent place in the main UI as its own button.
