If I don't want some items taken, it does NOT mean I'm being selfish

There are some comments to the effect that if people don't want things taken from the front of their house that they are whining and should grow up and it's not against the rules anyway. Underlying those type of comments is the assumption that the person being spoken to is being selfish or greedy in some way.

This is not always the case. I WANT lots of players to come to my street (and I DON'T want to have the devs restrict access to only my friends or whatever). I WANT to leave food and/or drinks and other things out for people to take. I want to have animals/trees that they can harvest from.

I also want to leave out a meat collector or 2, as well as a milk collector, and/or a still. I want others to collect from them. Especially after re-launch and we get new players coming in again. It could be really helpful to a level 4 to have a source of 600 energy gain with no expenditure on their part. That can be really helpful to a lower-level player.

But there is no way in the world that I will be doing these altruistic things if my some of my stuff - like the collectors/feeders - is continually being taken away by others.

If I am going to be the one who is expending MY resources (currants and imagination that I worked for and earned) to "create" the area in front of my home, it needs to stay the way I make it. I'm getting really weary of people saying that I'm being whiny or some kind of crybaby because I think this.

I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one either.

  • This is why I suggest another tool that can be made.  A lock.  It would be even better if it only worked next to a tree!

Somebody could still cut down the tree in order to break the lock, but then you could also have another device that administers antidotes to your trees to prevent them from being killed by poison.

You would only be able to use a lock or an automatic tree doctor on your own street.  And, they would probably be reasonably expensive.

These are probably pretty complicated things to code, though, so even if TS thinks they are great ideas, I wouldn't expect them to come out any time soon.  But I, personally, would much rather see this solution than an automatic restriction.

  • I'm hoping that there will be a method to lock machines / collectors / etc just like icons.  I, too, am open to neighbors and strangers harvesting my collectors, but I don't want them to take the actual collector.  I think it's a fairly common feeling.

I hope that the outside of houses will be like the inside once the housing is out of beta.  A "decorate" option that will lock the items in their places, and a normal "drop" option that would allow things to be taken.

  • I agree with you Flowery Pott. There is no reason to denigrate those of us who wish to be able to put certain items in our front yards without having them stolen. I, too, will not be doing the altruistic things unless there is some protection put in place.

"I hope that the outside of houses will be like the inside once the housing is out of beta. A "decorate" option that will lock the items in their places, and a normal "drop" option that would allow things to be taken." Absolutely - my thoughts too!

  • I don't know if it would need a specific tool, but if possible, I'd like to see whatever code they had to put in that made some items lock to the home owner have a UI.

As it is, it's easy enough for current players, never mind new players, to get confused about which items lock and where they lock.  Gnomes and icons lock down anywhere on personal streets, so why not feeders?  (But then again, are feeders even supposed to work on streets?)  I'm not saying if feeders should lock or not, but I am saying it's arbitrary that some items lock and some do not, and it will not always be clear which is which until it is too late.

And I have this concern in reverse inside my house: items placed in decorate mode on top of furniture lock down, even if I want keyholders to be able to stop by and grab a drink off my bar.
I'd just rather be in control of it, for either reason, in either location.  Then there's no question of what should be locked, no question of what is locked and what is not.  And in the long run, probably a lot less upset people in live help or filing reports about missing items.

  • serenitycat said in this post:

"Permissions- I want to be able to decorate my front yard with fruit , or other stuff, or whatever and not have to worry about it being taken . So I'd really prefer to have the front yard be locked down . SO that A) no one can remove anything -i am so sick of the thieving . B) and so no one can change my resources , kill my trees etc. --ie i dont mind people using a resource -like harvesting my fruit tree-but i dont want them to be able to kill the tree or actually change the resource to a different type .

Now this does have a drawback that I cant just then , leave things out for others- like say extra eggs i harvested-cant leave them out for any hungry glitch that wanders by.

BUt , again , if we had a " bin" or whatever that we could leave in the front yard for "free items for others may take " -then that'd be one way to solve the drawback .

As it stands now- I'd rather have the privacy adn control of my front yard- and worry about giving to others specifically when I encounter them .

I am still thinking about the street signs. ..It'd be really cool if i could lock known thieves out of my street all together ! say maybe have an edit that only i can see - that lets me lock specific people out of my street! I would tottallyy love , lobe that !"

This is the very best idea I have read..........ever.  I want to see what serenitycat laid out here come to fruition.

  • I agree totally Flowery Pot!  I put piggies/chickens/butterflys on my street hoping people will come visit and nibble, milk, etc.  But, my collectors/feeders disappeared overnight.  Seems it would be so simple to lock them down so no one could take them.  Now, I feel it a good idea to go through the forums and block everyone that seems to think stealing from their fellow Glitchens is ok.

  • If they can make sticks that prevent the animals from straying too far, they should be able to make some kind of a *lock* that can prevent items from being stolen in a particular radius on the street that is has our name on it.
I busted a stranger on my street that had harvested my wood tree (fine by me) and who was standing at my feeder when I saw her. Because she left quickly like a "thief in the night" I'm guessing she was there to steal my feeder and collector but she got busted before she was able to steal.
Now I don't feel like I can leave anything on my street :(

If that's whining then so be it.

  • I don't think it is whining at all, PittyPat. That was my point; I'm sick of being told I'm whining when I'm really only trying to be nice and helpful to other players.

The problem of having a radius or area of unsteal-ability is that there are some items that I want to be taken. Food and drink mostly, but I'm sure other items as well (the SWF boxes for instance) could and should be take-able. Just some things need to be un-take-able - as some things already are.

Other people's mileage may vary, but I also wouldn't mind (as much) if my front-yard animals were taken or my front-yard trees changed (if I have any). I can easily replace them. But if I put out collectors, I want them to remain available for anyone to collect from. I don't want to have to be continually replacing them.

If Tiny Speck wants players to be cooperative and kind and helpful to other players, then they should make it so such players don't get burned while doing so. I strongly believe that I'm not being a whiny crybaby for thinking this and from now on I will strongly resist if anyone tries to tell me that I am. Because I'm fed up with that BS.

  • There are items you CAN leave, items you CANT. I know some people are testing what, and requesting nicely of Devs that it be changed to include items that can be shared, like feeders.

That is fact, that is the game. Tough. Whinge all you like and people will see the moan before the subject and will give you back what you give them, attitude.

I would like to share items more from the front of my house, but I will ask nicely to the devs and leave the moaning to someone else, until I know its safe I will keep my stuff locked away. They want to know what would be preferred, we are testers. Tell them what you want but don't moan about it, it lowers the tone.

I am not aiming this at anyone, so don't take it personally.

  • Well, thanks jiva. You just demonstrated my reason for making this topic in the first place. Saying I'm whinging and moaning and giving attitude.

That is not the case in any way, shape or form. I just don't want to be told that any more and I don't want it assumed that that my reasons for making suggestions amount to whininess. I don't like being told "that is the game. Tough" either.

We're in beta testing so the devs can hear how things are working in acual use. I am giving feedback. While still protesting how things I say are being misinterpreted.

  • This is a very generous thing you seek to do, far from selfish.  However, the front of your house is a public area and not all Glitchen are as thoughtful as you.  Personally, I believe that if you ignore these two factors when weighing-up the pros and cons then you're actively setting yourself up for disappointment.  You could choose to bring an end to it by removing all unsecured items from in front of your house or accepting that those you choose to leave may be stolen.

That said, I think your situation highlights a tricky tension created by having a public space in a personal area.  The front of my own house does feel very much a part of my in-game private space.  Privacy is even suggested by its secluded location (no other homes in sight, tricky for others to reach).  I suspect that if I'm given the option to influence how it looks/the functionality it offers by investing my time or other hard-earned resources in it then that sense of "mine" is only going to increase.  Yet, as your example so clearly illustrates, while it may be mine, it's definitely not private; anyone and everyone may use it, just as I may use the front gardens of their homes.  It seems like an unnecessary complication.

  • As I see it, the root cause of the differing opinions on how the new house streets should work, and wether or not items can, or should, be taken by other players, is the two dimensionality of Glitch. In the "real world" we have both a sidewalk that is publicly owned and a front yard that is privatly owned. Few would argue that taking items from your front yard is not theft, while most would agree that items left on the sidewalk are free for the taking. In Glitch we don't have this separation of areas. Perhaps the future will see some sort of "front yard" area that is viewable by everyone, but from which only keyholders can take things.

  • As its much easier to get to our own homes now, ie, no energy cost to get there, it would be easy enough to go home once each game day to feed the pigs? I know it doesn't solve the problem of having our collectors taken so we'd have to manually nibble the pigs but it's a compromise until (or if) the devs implement a code to keep the stuff locked down.

  • Some ppl like to compare it to real life. In real life if you left something in front of your house in your yard, it could possibly be taken. But, if you leave it in your backyard, in real life, it still can be taken. So really, I don't see the difference. Suppose I had a big fence up around my yard, then ppl couldn't see right away what I had in my yard, but it can still be taken.

Actually, things in my house in real life can be taken too. There is only a clear glass window keeping ppl from coming inside and taking my things. That and the law.

The good in you says no I'm not going to take that but not everyone has that good in them. That's why we have security alarm systems these days hooked up to our real life homes. We want to trust the world, we want to trust people, but if we trusted people so much why do we have alarm systems, locked doors, barred up windows, and large fences? Because we know not everyone is trustworthy.

  • In the real world if somebody steals something from your yard you can call the police.   They probably won't catch the thief but at least there are serious consequences to it.   At the same time the stuff you can steal from real world yards have real world value - they aren't just pixels in a free online game.

I don't think that anyone who doesn't like having stuff taken from a street that is clearly labeled with their name (unlike the community gardens which were clearly labelled "plant for everyone, take what you need) is being selfish.    But at the same time its a semi-public place and not exactly like the private property of a real life front yard.     If everyone wants TS to allow us to claim absolute power over that land (giving keys, kicking people out, not letting them harvest or pick anything up)  then it won't be public anymore.   It will just be an extension of your private home.   An Island with an exclusive membership.

I think we are all giving the thieves (and they are thieves) too much attention anyway.   There is probably only a few people going around stealing from housing streets and they do it because they get juiced from the attention that comes from threads like these.
Posted 9 months ago by Treesa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I say that piggy feeders and collectors can not be taken from HOUSES, like icons and stills.
But since the front yard is a PUBLIC place, people still have the right to take whatever they want. So since your backyard is public, anyone can take from it. So your feeders and collectors are in a PUBLIC place, therefore they cannot be locked to you. But people know that they wouldn't want to steal stuff like that, so most don't do it, even if it is public. I assume that anything left on a housing street was meant to be given away. I harvest herbs from the community gardens because it is PUBLIC! Even if I don't plant anything in return, it is because it is PUBLIC. I take from the food pile in Ajaya Bliss because it is PUBLIC. If you leave something out on your housing street, you should know that it is PUBLIC.
If you seriously have problems with people stealing feeders and collectors frm your street, DO IT IN YOUR HOUSE.

  • Flowerry Pot, you are one of the least selfish people I know.

Smart companies use beta testing not just to track down bugs, but also to learn whether there are design features that lead to a negative user experience. I believe TS is a smart company, so I believe they *want* feedback on and discussion of user experience as well as on possible software bugs. So I'd encourage folks to read and try to understand posts about negative user experiences before writing them off as whinging or selfish

In this case, I think some of the issues being discussed -- making streets public vs. private, being able to lock down various items -- are more complicated than they may seem. What players do on their home streets effects the overall game balance and the user experience of other players. TS has to think about all that before making specific design changes.

When things are complicated, it can be difficult for people to explain their ideas. So it's easy for emotions to rise and it's tempting to just cut to our bottom line, which is often "well, you're wrong."  So I'm going to tell a little story:

When I was a student, I spent several months in a foreign country where queuing practices at first seemed beyond rude. When I was standing in a queue, someone would cut in front of me -- without asking and with no apologies. And it seemed that this happened much more to me than to other people, leading me to suspect it was because I was young or a foreigner. What I eventually learned, was that it was actually my behaviour that invited this. Using my own cultural notions of personal space, I was standing apart from the person in front of me in a way that signaled to others that I was not in any hurry and that they should feel free to go ahead of me.

It can be hard to understand others, and even harder to be misunderstood. Sometimes it helps to just laugh.

  • Maybe these streets everyone is calling 'theirs' aren't meant to be used like it's your backyard but more so like a STREET! Just like other streets in the world. Except this one happens to mention your name because it's informing others where you live. And your BACKYARD will be the place for those feeders and collectors, just like it has been. Yes the yard seems small but thats where the upgrading and expanding comes in.
I for one didn't even think to put objects like that out front on the street, probably because no one said the 'rule' had changed. So, agree thieves suck, but assuming you can do what you want on 'your' street is your fault.

  • Go Ms. Pott!

FWIW, what works for me is: SchWM's street = Front Yard. I realize that the analogy is not exact, and possibly not what TS intended. Too bad.

In my RL front yard (and on my real life quite public street), I occasionally leave out things for people to take, with signs on them saying "Free/Gratis!"

People STILL knock on my front door and ask if it's okay to take it. Every time.

I rarely lock my front door, never when we're home. My back door lock doesn't even work- I have to remember to use the deadbolt. Never had anything stolen from front yard, house or back yard in 10 years here.

(BTW, I live within 10 miles of Washington DC USA)

I'm sorry-- the "it's not nailed down, so it must be okay to take it" is the sheerest BS. Everyone knows that you don't take other people's stuff. Maybe you take an apple off their tree when it's ripe, or a raspberry from their bush when you're walking by-- you certainly don't steal complicated machinery out of their yard just because you can!

The fact that people think it's okay to do that in Glitch tells me more about how easy it is to lose track of what's right on the Internet where you can't see other people's faces than anything else. (To be clear-- I would never support disciplinary action against people who broke this rule, because of how the game is structured. Doesn't mean it's right, though ;)

(Yeah, yeah, I know! I'm just whining!)

FWIW, consider this a vote for access to a UI letting me choose whether or not to lock things, including trees, stills, collectors, sticks, gnomes, and icons, on my street, in my house, and in my yard. I don't care what the default is, as long as I can change it at will, or at least when putting something down. Also happy with the automatic tree antidoter / lock idea, although I suspect that would be significantly more work to code.

For instance: instead of having the options "Drop", should have the options "Drop", and "Lock".

--SchWM, off to do a feature request.

  • I totally agree with Flowerry Pott. and , no you aren't the only one.

and Yep, it gets a bit annoying for people to start throwing comments your way that pretty much say that you are being a whiner , or you are getting all upset about something , etc etc.
Umm, just speaking for myself- Nope, I just shared my opinion in the forums of a beta edition of a game that I play, expressed same by text in a post there , and made some statements in the posts , and I don't really think anything in my statements indicated that I was in an uproar about anything.
I find it very *interesting* to see who starts throwing vehement , semi-attack-ish type comments about just because I calmy and rationally dis-agreed with something and stated my opinions as to
why I dis-agreed. Interesting and duly noted.

Further, like many others here-if TS is going to call it "my street" then I suggest that I should have complete control over locking things on my street and un-locking things on my street.
Otherwise, don't call it "my street" . Kinda simple, no ?
And yes as I have stated elsewhere, and like many here , -I want to be able to leave some things out for visitors , but I dont want my items removed , or my yard decorating messed with .
Solution suggestion : Make me able to lock and unlock everything. (includes the option to make a harvester to be collected from by a visitor -but not moved or removed ).
Keyholders can already collect some things , and some things pick up , and some not. And likewise there are some items that none can take like say a gnome - so there seems to be the flexibilty available to have the "locks" ... so I hope the devs will consider empowering the homeowners.
And/Or just give me a bin in my yard that I can drop things in that are free for taking -and leave everything else locked with NO option . (this would include amongst other things - locking my trees so that people cant kill them. and the tree auto-doc is a cute idea !).
But this half of stuff is one way and half of stuff is another way , on a street that can be shown , as Audaria has so clearly shown in her statement s (that i 100percent also agree with!) , to be MY street currently---well this half and half stuff is just creating a mess . And this mess creates ,for me, a fairly large sized negative aspect to my play experience.

SO - I hope the devs are reading , as they say they do , and that they will fix the confusion by making things consistent as they move forward with the next testing and updates. I know this is beta and some things are "half-way done" and intentionally released in that half-way state for the purposes of testing.
Therefore, let me assure you devs : I tested it -and the above is my opinion on it . :D

  • If locking is seen as negative, why not have the ability to make certain things (feeders, milkers, garden furniture, etc.) super-heavy. It could be an option for the owners to select. If passers by click on the item, there could be a message 'this is too heavy for you to lift' or something like that.

If the house and street are in my imagination, I think I should be able to imagine my stuff safe.

Being able to make things too heavy to take seems like a good way to be able to let others know what is ok to take and what you would rather keep.
