New wardrobe and vanity

Is everyone so engrossed in the new options that nobody has bothered to post about it yet? I like to see how they're monetizing things, and how there will be "subscriber" benefits, and other monetized options. It also appears that there is enough "free" stuff to still pique interest.

  • It seems that once I make a selection on a piece of clothing and it become part of my wardrobe, it's no longer listed in my catalogue of options.
    I find that irritating.
I don't want to have to keep track of what I paid in credits for items.. I want to see them listed with all the others on offer. I have no idea what my gorgeous coat or green skirt cost. I'm not returning them, but I want to see everything in the store.

  • I think we should try out our new clothes in the game in a long weekend test.

  • I like this. While at first I was taken back by the prices, I totally understand this is what will drive a large part of the game's income.

One suggestion I have (that I don't think I saw anyone mention yet) is the ability for the skin color to be customized. As in a color picker or something that gives a lot more possible colors. Or maybe even the ability to combine two or more of the color options to create a new one.

  • You guys realize you just click "add a month" and you become a subscriber for free, right?

That said, another +1 for Wrendolin's really smart comment.

Stupid trivial request: Can you make a long brown duster so I can be a Firefly Browncoat?

Stupid trivial glitch: maybe it's my display, but the words "live log hat" get cut off across the bottom, and seem to say "live loo hat." Which won't fly with the Brits. (All the descenders are cut off, but that's the only one that caught my eye.)

And thanks for keeping my beloved dead octopus hat!

  • Hrm. Dresses and coats and tops and skirts are all mingled. When you click in skirts, say, you get a mix of everything.

And I want pirate boots. Tall, sexy, intimidating pirate boots.

  • +1 for the Firefly Browncoat. And how about a cunning hat like Jayne's mother sent him?

Love the new choices and my new look, and am fine with a subscription.

How about special t-shirts as rewards for projects, with the name of the street on? Or (pretty please) alpha-tester t-shirts??

  • Wrendolin said: "The current 'YOU NEED TO SUBSCRIBE FOR THIS ITEM' pop-up is a bit big and shouty in my opinion. If I wasn't sure whether Glitch was fun yet I would be kind of put-out by it. 'I haven't even played yet and already they want my money??'"

This is a good point. In fact, we hope to be able to open the vanity and wardrobe up to even people who don't have accounts, as a fun thing to play with, and hopefully as a way to encourage them to get at least a free account to start playing. If we do that, I imagine we'll let them use at least some subset of subscriber-only articles -- but with a much less robust manner of indicating they would need to be a paid subscriber to get to actually wear the article in game.

But it is a tricky balance; we also don't want to bait and switch, making them think that everything they can use as a non-account holder is something they can just sign up for a free account and have on their new avatar.

"Maybe for the first time player the wardrobe and vanity could be limited to free stuff?"

Maybe, but there might be some pretty awesome subscriber-only stuff we really want to make a first impression with :)

Thanks for the thoughtful comments, Wrendolin and all!

  • I do hope that you're going to improve the proportion of women's clothing available (we women love to spend money on clothes). But right now you've got a very limited number of options that make you look female, everything else is tomboyish. Which can make it tricky if you want to wear a hat. Hats are very in this season.

  • Also, if I was a cyberfeminist I'd probably complain that skirts and dresses are considered special items*. We would prefer the category Symbols Of Oppression.

    * though that might just be because there's not enough for their own category?
Posted 22 months ago by shhexy corin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • oh, yeah and some high heels under symbols of oppression too!
Posted 22 months ago by Emu Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Lol, the "special category" exists because there is not enough of them yet. And, there is not enough of "them" — skirts, dress and coats — because they take much longer to animate. Whereas shirts and pants mostly stick to the arms and legs and can just inherit the arm or leg animations, each dress needs its own unique animation (about a thousand frames' worth in a few dozen different states). However, there are many in the queue now (including some pretty spectacular ones). So, before too long, "special" will be broken up again.

(Also, there are other things — boots, leggings, stockings, and more — coming which will help introduce more sexual dimorphism, for those so inclined.)

In general, with the new tools making it much easier, we will be adding new items regularly — there will be more before the next test, even.

  • Once on home page, then click on wardrobe by my avatar. It takes you to the clothing pages. you then see the words "change your cloths or try something new" There is on reason in the world why I would have ever click on those words other than by mistake like I just have. I scrolled my mouse over the words and only just noticed a underlining, which then made me click on it. Im also sure clicking on the shoe/dress/hat icons round my avatar did not open the wardrobe contents yesterday?? They do now though.
Maybe saying Change your cloths HERE [here in red letters] Or Try something new.
I never new I had a wardrobe, hence my complaining on wanting to sell stuff back. as I ran out of credits :)

  • Yay boots! I didn't immediately realize that I started with some clothes already in my closet, and that things that go there don't show up down below with other options. I also had a problem testing out pants. When I removed a pair I was trying on I would revert back to the previous pair of pants I had saved with (instead of no pants). I saw someone posted about this in the bugs forum. Other than that things worked fine. I agree with the suggestion other people have made about having a sort by cost (free, free for subscribers, credits) option.

  • I've been playing around with the wardrobe a bit more and just realized that "Change your clothes or try on something new" is clickable! The closet vs. store distinction in the GUI is very unclear. Additionally, I'd like to see the already-owned-items thumbnails much bigger - the size of the store item thumbnails seems about right. Your artists drew so much beautiful details into these items and I want to be able to see it in my wardrobe without trying it on!

So, still loving all the new clothing options but I think the GUI needs a little more polishing (but hey, isn't that the point of an alpha?)

  • ooh i like my new outfit. but i'm not able to make my avatars face quite the way it was before - could there possibly be a tilt option for the eyes? or the ability to make the mouths even smaller than the default size?

also, i had a bit of trouble finding the save button at first- I didn't even realize it was there before i was prompted to save.

  • also, could we have maybe a plain black ballet flat shoe option or something? plain black boots? the shoes are all too flashy for me so i'm going barefoot:)

Totally agree on the ballet flat.

  • quoo: (I think) I've noticed some subtle differences in the way facial feature adjustment works, but I've been assured that nothing's changed. However, there are things we do need to change: a few problems with the existing features that need to be tweaked, the range of control for ear height and mouth size needs to be increased and, of course, we have to add more options :)

Some plainer shoes: good suggestion; coming up. (We just added 12 new items which will be pushed out to the live server sometime soon.)

  • For everyone who has already spent all their credits: when we reset (very soon) you'll get to ("have to"?) start all over again anyway :)

And, we'll try to explain things a bit better up front as well so people don't get into the same state. And probably, if people ask nicely, we'll just give a few more credits until the purchase stuff is hooked up.
Posted 22 months ago by stoot barfield Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Oh yes, please let us have some credit after the reset, I like my new purple coat :) Will happily pay once its hooked up. I would have inserted 25 credits to continue, but there wasn't a slot....

  • ""Maybe for the first time player the wardrobe and vanity could be limited to free stuff?"

Maybe, but there might be some pretty awesome subscriber-only stuff we really want to make a first impression with :)
    "

How about giving each new player a week (or two?) of free subscription so they can test everything out? Then you could leave the subscription only notice as is, and people would know that after the first week is up, only the free stuff would be available to them. Maybe they could even get to keep one paid item as a special encouragement bonus.
Posted 22 months ago by Cefeida Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Wouldn't you then have to strip people of items they were wearing? Don't like that. I think the idea posted upthread, of showing new players a bunch of free wardrobe options to play with, and only later showing them all the cool special items they could buy if they wanted, would be smoother.
Posted 22 months ago by Helcat Subscriber! | Permalink
  • There is a strong incentive not to look like everyone else, so I think people would be easily convinced to buy a fun hat or whatever.
Posted 22 months ago by Helcat Subscriber! | Permalink
  • "Wouldn't you then have to strip people of items they were wearing?" If they chose items labeled 'Subscription only' then yes, but those would be clearly labeled, I think.

To be honest, I don't like the idea of a monthly subscription at all. I want to pay for glitch but a monthly fee which I have to keep renewing just so I can wear more clothes in a game is not something I can justify, even at five dollars. I would much rather pay (a bit more) for individual items and then own them permanently. If that's what the 'a la carte' option mentioned above means, I'm all for. :D

I suspect I won't be the only one to be more attracted to that option- some people will prefer to pay 25 dollars and have an unlimited wardrobe choice for five months, while others would rather pay 25 dollars for five items they can keep forever.

If that isn't a good enough model to keep the devs in business, maybe there could be a small renewal fee at the end of a given time period? Say I buy some stuff, it's mine for a year, but if I want to keep it for another year I pay 10% of the price or something like that.

I keep thinking of KoL which used to have the rule that your account would be wiped after a certain time of inactivity- unless you donated $10 or more. For me, paying upfront (even more than that) to make my Glitch account permanent would be a sensible move. A one-time payment is always an attractive thing to have- people like to hear they only have to pay once for something, they'll more easily give their money, and then play and perhaps buy more frivolous items- but one set payment for a permanent account just feels like a good investment, you know? Even if it's only in a game!

At the end of the day I just think Glitch is a game which deserves to earn some money and the more options people have to pay the devs while not feeling like they are getting ripped off, the better.

  • re: vanity for new players ( alpha.glitch.com/forum/gene... )
no, i agree. bait and switch is very, very bad indeed. worse than a straightforward gimmeallyomoneys! approach.

If i was a new player and saw the wardrobe and vanity with all those clothes and personalisations for the first time I think I'd be pretty blown away by all those (currently free) options.
And after playing for half an hour and thinking 'this is really fun!' if I then start noticing characters with even cooler gear I might go back to the wardrobe and see what I'd missed. At that point a 'you'll need to shell out real world cash for this item' pop-up would be easier to stomache.
Posted 22 months ago by Wrendolin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Cefeida, "a la carte" does indeed mean purchasing individual items which are yours to keep irrespective of subscription. You can opt not to subscribe and then pick and choose items which you'd like to buy. You can even choose not to subscribe and then … not buy anything at all! (Some items are and will be locked for subscribers only, so you won't be able to buy those but there will be many options all 'round.)

And, there will be higher tiers of subscription, which include a monthly stipends in credits at discounted rates for those who prefer to have all possible options. This is something we expect to be "tuning" for a while.
Posted 22 months ago by stoot barfield Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Wrendolin: we agree — definitely no bait and switch (except maybe for testers since everyone will be getting free subscriptions for a while …). Over time we'll find the right balance between letting people explore for free and showing them the paid options.
Posted 22 months ago by stoot barfield Subscriber! | Permalink

  • This might have already been discussed and I missed the thread, but wouldn't it be nice to have multiple saved outfits and faces. So, instead of having to hand pick each piece and make adjustments to the size and placement, you could just click a head or outfit you already set up for quick changes. As always, just a thought (hahaha)!
