[updated] Quantity picker ho!

You know how when you have to choose how many of a stack of Sammiches* you want to eat (or donate, or whatever) you get a menu that has a limited number of choices? That has been the cause of some frustration for quite a while for many people, and we've had lots of requests to provide the ability to enter an exact number. Well guess what? ... Yes! You're right! We did it!

Now, when you get a menu asking you to choose a quantity, and there are more than 5 items in the stack, you'll have buttons to choose "all", "just one" or "none" and an input field to enter a number (pre-populated with a value that is half the stack size).

A few tips on how to use it:

• You can start typing a number as soon as the menu comes up. Fast!

• You can use the right arrow key to move focus to the input, and then use the UP and DOWN arrows to change the quantity.

• You can also use the + and - buttons on either side of the input field to change the quantity.

• Hit the ENTER key while the input field is selected to submit the value!

(One possible issue we're aware of is that there is no way to click to submit a custom quantity. You have to hit the ENTER key. We'll see how much of a frustration this is for people before we decide if we want to provide a click-to-submit affordance.)

Enjoy!

* Feature not limited to Sammiches

UPDATE: We gave you a button to click on!

  • I've just been donating meats to shrines & noticed that I've got the "3 digits split across 2 lines" issue as well. I wonder if BarryW and Moonspoon are also on Linux and we've got a version and/or font issue going on?

Plus, did someone else say they'd accidentally donating/eaten all of their item when they only meant to do part? Same happened to me... donated 350 meats more than I meant to. Issue seems to be that, when the dialog first opens, keyboard focus is on the "all" button. It's confusing because if you start typing then it switches transparently to the numeric field so psychologically you think "if the correct number's in the numeric field already then all I've got to do is press enter, right?" but that'll catch you out. If you've got 700 meats and want to donate 350 then pressing enter when the dialog pops up (showing 350 already filled in) will select the "donate all" option and you'll lose all your meats.

  • Yup, had the same issues with the focus being on "All", as well as an occasional double number (33 when pressing 3 once).

The number wrap is also a bit...strange to look at, too. Should be 4 digit length per line.

  • This is all really good feedback, thanks. We're thinking on it!

  • I loooove the new quantity picker!  My only complaint is, like some other players, the fact that select ALL is the first thing to be highlighted, and it is also the one that comes with the most consequences if you pick it by mistake, like feeding a piggy ALL of your tomatoes, or donating ALL of your crystals, or drinking ALL of your earthshakers, y'know?  Why don't you put "Just one" in that handy first-up slot, and the "select all" button way a little ways away?

  • I agree with Kross, but I've also long thought that, for example, if I accidentally use ten earthshakers, I should get a buff ten times longer than if I'd only used one.  This would take some of the sting out of these accidents, which are bound to happen, regardless of where the "all" button is placed.

What if the interface were changed to: Just one, <number picker>, All, small enter button, x to close?

  • @Snazzlefrazz: Nope. Win7 and IE9.

  • Agreeing with the "ALL" selection not being in the first slot, and as an mmo/pc gamer, I just always have one hand on the mouse. I'd prefer a way to click the quantity picker (I got a little frustrated the first time I saw it and tried clicking everywhere). XP

  • @snazzlefrazz , Win7 and Chrome.

  • Like being able to enter a number now - very very helpful; like that it defaults to half - also helpful; but miss having at least a few more predetermined options, so I can just click them if I choose with my mouse.  And yes, I'm one of THOSE people, that uses a mouse for this type of stuff.  So having a click option to use the default value in the quantity would be helpful also.

Also totally agree...posted in the ideas forum ages ago that "just one" and "all" needed to be swapped...still irritates the you know what out of me, when I accidentally double click and I either eat or drop ALL my stuff...would much rather the default double click be just one...was quite disappointed to see that we got the quantity option, without all and just one being flipped in the menu.

  • We have now added a "go" button inside the free-form picker when you initiate the menu from a mouse click (if you are using a keyboard, the button does not show up which keeps things neater and cleaner). So, all you button-hunters: it is there for you!

  • Using FF (7.0.1) on my Mac, clicking Go with my mouse doesn't do anything.
