Dear Glitch Beautification Anti-litterer Green Initiative Peeps,

Boo on you!

I dropped invites to a neighborhood party  at the signs on the residential streets w/in our street. Y'all came and picked them up to throw them away because, apparently, no matter what a note says or where it is placed, it is trash in your eyes.

But this was not trash!

It was a party invite to a specific mass of people. Would it have killed you to leave them there until Thursday so that everyone on the streets would have a chance to see them? If beautification is so important to you, don't you think a strong sense of community would help keep Glitch beautiful? Don't neighborhood block parties increase that sense of community and make us proud of our little neck of Ur? We would have picked them up on Thursday night or Friday morning. It would have been good.

But no. It's all black and white to you. There is no green. All notes are trash and must be destroyed.

I would have been a proud member of your group. Now I think you're just a bunch of green meanies set out to destroy party fun... you're a bunch of deimaginators as bad as the rooks themselves!

  • Notes are wonderful. I love finding them in random places, even if all they say are "Hi!".

Throwing them away in general is just super lame.

    That is all.

  • Yep! And I have a massive scavenger hunt in the works. Now I've got to reconsider how it's going to work. It was going to rely on notes and such, but that's now out of the question and, unless I figure out a work around, I'll have to cancel it. Thanks green meanies. Way to ruin the fun.

  • imbri, are you saying they were on the XX00 block streets or just on the main street?

Main streets I can see keeping an eye on, but who destroys notes on housing block streets?  Are they attempting to keep people from ever communicating with their neighbors via notes?

Or do they just not want to see a note left in the game?  Blind adherence to a no-notes rule is a fairly anti-social policy within a social game.

  • Would be nice if there was some way to make notes a little (just a little) sticky. Similar to how you can't rename animals for about an hour after someone else has renamed them. Maybe if a dropped note was guaranteed to stick around 3 hrs and then to disintegrate after another 24?

That way we're not so reliant on them being in singular bulletin-board places either, and you could still have a scavenger hunt or hide them or whatnot.

  • The were on the XX00 block streets. One on each street, by the sign. Not littering the whole street or anything. On my street, there were notes on everyone's doorstep as well and they took those. And I'm fairly certain it was an anti-noter because an item of more value was left behind.

It's apparently blind adherence - a no notes policy.

  • And this is the kind of thing the Glitch community is all about. One group says "let's kill all notes in public places," another group says "no! we love notes!" and eventually it'll all balance out to a happy medium. I am pleased with these sorts of community self-regulation bouts.

  • I don't live in an apartment.  I don't look at bulletin boards.  I forget that they even exist because I never have the occasion to see one.
It would be nice to have more bulletin boards around for this purpose.

  • LBO: The only bulletin boards I've seen in the game are in apartment buildings and community machine rooms.  Are there some that I've missed, or are you trying to say that there should be more of them?

  • I love finding random notes around Glitch, especially when they are reactions to stuff in the area you are visiting, like travel logs, or comments on stuff that people have been doing. It's a nice bit of flavour. The group dedicated to destroying all notes, regardless of what they say, seem a bit like killjoys.

There should be more community noticeboards though, and not just in housing locations. The subway stations (either inside or outside on the subway street) would be perfect locations for new boards.

  • The only bulletin boards I've seen are in machine rooms. I've never lived in an apartment block.

In four weeks of play I've been into a machine room on precisely 2 occasions and I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to find one so I could read the board.

I have never (so far) dropped notes myself but I like reading them and I think that until and unless bulletin boards appear in more prominent places they're next to useless. In fact I'd assumed they were specifically meant for notes on machine room stuff!
Posted 14 months ago by geekybird Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I was being quick my response, not chastising anyone. I just think bulletin boards should be used more (would like them in more public places).

Also I thing it is somewhat jerky to remove a note from a bulletin board unless you find it actually offense. I mean, very offensive. Not slightly against your sensibilities or you find it annoying.

And I have absolutely nothing against dropped notes. I do it. But if they get taken, whatever. That's what I get for dropping it somewhere.

And I will also sweep a public street clean if I see five notes of the same thing on one street of or a sequence of streets.

But I never do it on someone else's residential street or even notes on the doorsteps of others on my street. And the Dragon's Head. Those notes should be respected.
Posted 14 months ago by Lord Bacon-o Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I haven't seen many bulletin boards that have actually been used extensively, or I'd ask to have them put everywhere! I think there's something about leaving a mark on the physical landscape of the game that makes note-dropping a far more enticing pastime, and also explains the motivation behind people "cleaning" the street up again. But, a better system for in-game announcements is something we will keep thinking on.
Posted 14 months ago by Blanky Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yeah, one of the issues we've had with bulletin boards is the same as with dropping notes:  people removing the note.  I can say that I have posted dozens of notes on bulletin boards over the last couple of weeks, and they all disappear pretty quickly.  In some cases, it is a clear case of people being anti-social.  In others, it is not understanding the consequences of their actions.

Either way, bulletin boards are being treated no more sacredly than notes on the ground.

That said, as a heavy marketer, I also would ask that, if a note is on the ground or on a bulletin board, please read it, then decide if you are going to remove it.  And, better to err on the side of leaving it.
Posted 14 months ago by Grem Sketch Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Blanky, perhaps the reason there's so many notes being dropped on the ground is precisely the lack of noticeboards in the game (currently towers and machine rooms).  Maybe if there were more, they'd get used more.  Just some food for thought.  The artwork and functionality is there.  It wouldn't take much effort to add them in more places and give it a test run to see if they get used or not.

  • I would imagine one of the biggest reasons that bulletin boards are not used much is because they are not in good places to be used, except in apartments, maybe.

I'm sure TS will come up with a creative and aesthetic solution of some sort for IG announcements. :)

  • Ugh, sorry this happened to you, Imbri. Here in my neighborhood we have a real-life vigilante neighborhood beautification group who are equally pig-headed. I watched one of them tear down all my (legally posted) "Missing Cat" posters, right in front of my face. People kept coming up to me and going "I saw you took your flyers down, I'm so glad you found your cat!" and I would just want to cry because of course people thought I'd found her if the posters were down... The group even sent me a letter quoting only parts of the laws about posting flyers, totally out of context so it looked like what I'd done was illegal, and threatening to sue me! I remember the feelings of frustration and helplessness - I was being robbed of the most efficient means of communicating with my community at large, and there was nothing I could do, since I couldn't stand guard over every sign. (I ended up finding my cat, btw, so it was a happy ending nonetheless.)

ETA: In terms of Glitch notices, back in beta one of my favorite things was to randomly come across notes with poems, mysteries, and most especially invitations to parties. I remember thinking that first time, "Wow! People are having a party and inviting *everyone*? And went to all this work to make sure invites are placed all over the world for us to find? This place is amazing!" I feel sad that that part of our culture is being threatened.

Like Meridian, we have a real-life, self-appointed clean freak in our neighborhood. Leave your garbage cans out too long, he complains to the city. Park a junker in your driveway while you work on it? He complains to the city. We started a neighborhood watch, and the organizer had to specifically tell this person, "It's NOT for complaints about other people's yards!" (Of course, he complained anyway.)

  • Perhaps we could have a system where we could pay X amount of currents for notes to be 'read only' for X amount of hours. Make it so 'read only' notes can only be placed on notice boards. Tie it into the skill set. You learn Bureaucratic Arts 3 which opens up a quest that allows you to obtain your fly posting permit.  This then unlocks penmanship 2 which gives you the ability to create 'read only' notes that last for 6 hours which in turn unlocks penmanship 3 which would increase the 'read only' to 12 hours. Place noticeboards in ALL residential streets and also place one in each subway station, community garden and on the main street of each region too.

Yeah I over thought this, not even sure this would even help that much and it could be abused but it's a mid week evening and I don't have anything better to do so thought i'd share my wacky idea. I also abhor the idea of clean freaks removing all notes as 90% of the time they are a joy to discover.

  • I live on one of the blocks that had its party invitation taken, along with a "please feed the piggies" note. As a resident of that area I just want to make it clear that I don't appreciate anyone coming to my street just to take things from us. It much would be different if one of my neighbors did it.

This "style of play" could lead to messy in-game retribution from glitches pushed to take vigilante action against their censors/oppressors. That is, if there were witnesses to the note-nabbing ... and glitches wondering how to use the hundreds of sheets of paper in their inventories ... or who are considering a quick jog through the ancestral lands to gather hundreds of sheets of paper ...

    Just sayin'.
Posted 14 months ago by Aleph Zero Subscriber! | Permalink
  • ha! I was thinking about that too. It'd be funny to fill a street up with glitches and drop notes (but don't move, so the notes stay stuck) and watch the anti-note brigade go insane.

Also, sorry innie! I have to confess to being a papercup dropper. But I do try to make it funny. Like a ton of cups in the front yard of a party house or around the campers at the sparkly caverns (or key locations). (but shhh don't tell anyone it was me! and if anyone says I've been making trips to the bureacratic halls just to fill my inventory they're lying! it was only once! or twice! well maybe ten times... but most were only a couple bags full!)

  • @Blanky and LB-O re: bulletin boards -- Early on I bought an apartment in Goorsh Gam and that bulletin board was getting notes posted quite regularly. But the next time I logged in, they would all be gone!! So apparently some people are even going out and clearing bulletin boards, which may be why they appear to not be used much.
Posted 14 months ago by kastlin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @kastlin -- I live in Gregarious, and I'm noticing the same thing. I rarely see notes, and when I do, they're gone by the time I go back up to my apartment (sometimes only 15 minutes later). I don't get what's so bad about leaving notes around for a little while...
Posted 14 months ago by Sterling Writer Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @kaslin and Sterling Writer -- this was a consistent issue when I lived at Louise Pasture Villas.  My notes would be removed sometimes within 5 minutes of their being posted on a bulletin board, seemingly leaving it empty.  We realized at one point that there was an organized group of griefers pulling them down, making it impossible to advertise events on the block.
Posted 14 months ago by Grem Sketch Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'd also love to see the ability to lock notes somehow, especially notes in a neighborhood block.  I dropped notes around all the streets in Lethensome Lift over the weekend to announce a neighborhood group and was worried i'd log in 2 hours later and see them all gone.  Happily, they're still there (thank goodness!  a couple of people have joined the group and noted "saw a note about this...").  But it did make me think some kind of lock -- like, lock this note for 12 hours, 1 day, 2 days, &c. -- would be useful.  Especially if i own a house in the neighborhood or on the street.
Posted 14 months ago by Wrdnrd Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Imho, the problem with (long 12h+) locks, is that it would allow people to grief the other way --- leaving tons of notes that no one could clean up. I don't know about you guys, but if I saw tons of notes on the ground, eventually I'd have to start ignoring them, because it would likely be too many to deal with.

Maybe short locks would be more appropriate, like 15 minutes to 30 minutes, especially on the bullitin boards. That way, you can be sure that some people have had a chance to read them, and the griefers won't be able to immediately remove them.

I don't know though. I think ultimately, I'd rather have no locks and take my chances with the griefers, but I agree that something needs to be done. I have some plans for notes in the future that would most definitely be ruined by a few note-hoovering griefers!
Posted 14 months ago by Sterling Writer Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It might be interesting to think on notes having a Vote Up/Vote Down aspect to them, so that it would take a number of Down votes before the note becomes take-able. That way, griefing would take a concerted effort, and those who think the note is useful can upvote to guard against it.

Then, after X number of days, it becomes vote-less, and take-able.
Posted 14 months ago by Wellsie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Wellsie -- Keep in mind that some people like to take notes because they like them, not just to trash them. Good idea... maybe we're getting closer to something that might work!
Posted 14 months ago by Sterling Writer Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I...can't tell if you guys are serious or not, but...what if it's not JUST the Anti-Litter group.  Maybe it's someone who reads a note, likes what it says, then picks it up and takes it with them.  Or if it's an invite, maybe people take it with them so they remember.  Or maybe they picked it up to read it and just forgot it was in their inventory.

Since anyone can pick up notes, I never thought of leaving one on the ground as an invitation or anything other than a little throwaway note containing a joke or a short story or something.  Not for important information like times/locations for parties or games.  But if I did see a note that looked like it was trying to announce something, I'd leave it be.

Rather than getting angry at people who want the streets clean and demanding that stray pieces of paper on the ground be left alone, why not ask for more bulletin boards and for the ability to take bulletined notes off the boards disabled either until after a week has passed or something?  Apply the Paper Cup "No Pick Up" magic to bulletined notes.

And if that happens, it'd be nice if the "higher end" housing areas had bulletin boards too.  Or maybe just a bulletin board next to the sign that leads to housing areas.  The latter would probably be easier for people wanting to announce something since they wouldn't have to visit every block.

  • I am one that picks up notes but not to be mean really. Those that have announcements of parties and such I leave alone unless the street is littered with them, then I pick up the many and leave one alone. The ones with silly ramblings I pick up. Now what possibly do I do with these notes? I use them for donations to my favorite giants or sell if I need currents! Oh and I don't touch those on bulletin boards by the way!
Posted 14 months ago by Casombra Amberrose Subscriber! | Permalink
  • More public bulletin boards-- yes!
But I love finding random notes... and I would never dream of taking one, whether to keep or throw away. Why would I destroy the pleasure of finding and reading that note for the next person?

I do also like the voting notes up or down suggestion. I think something like that might make a good compromise.

  • @Sindee☆Cyanide speaking for myself, I am half serious. Of course I don't think folks are as bad as the rooks themselves & I wanted to be a bit grar about it so they could understand why folks would be angry at them and why their approach may not be ideal.

It was very frustrating to see my 20 odd notes picked up. I left one on each of the residential streets in our block/quarter along with other notes to my specific neighbors. Considering the fact that more expensive items remained unpicked up and all the notes were taken in a short period of time, I have to assume it was an "anti-note" person. And, honestly, it kinda ticked me off. End of the world? Not at all. But an annoyance, none the less. And it was compounded by my frustration of street thieves. I LOVE leaving notes & gifts for friends at their doorstops and I feel like I can't do that anymore. I was super excited to be organizing this party and I don't even know if the word got out to everyone. That really sucks. Could I send them all mail at 20c a pop - sure. But I would much rather that money go to the party itself.

I have also spent a couple weeks planning a massive Ur-wide scavenger hunt and that would rely on notes (with a certain amount of redundancy built in so there's actually a lot of notes, but if I have to worry about a group who is organized to pick them up *without even reading* as they claim, no amount of redundancy would be enough). I've spent loads of time scouring every street (and most twice) for trivia & hiding spots and hundreds of thousands of currants on supplies & prizes and now I'm not even sure I want to do it - too much hassle. And that makes me really really really sad and a tiny bit angry. So was my post an overreaction? Perhaps. But I'm too disappointed to care.
Posted 14 months ago by Vera Strange Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Perhaps there can be a new item that is not a note but a tiny pennant or scrolling light-up ticker bar - maybe it costs a little bit more to get, but it has a certain amount of permanence to it. That way, notes can be notes, and this other thing can be more of an announcement-type item that people can opt into (or vote down or up, like I suggested upthread).

Maybe this item can be taken after X amount of time, but it requires a certain skill level to do it. There could also be an anti-griefing measure built in, where if the person has recently taken an item, it takes longer to take the next item, and even longer to take the next, unless they opt for a cooldown period.

Well, that sounds sort of code-heavy, but you get the idea - if someone is zealous about 'cleaning up' Ur, they can still do it, but it should have fatigue built into it somehow, and this gives the item a bit more potential staying power, etc.

Then again, more bulletin boards in more locations with expiration dates on messages is also good.
Posted 14 months ago by Wellsie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Even though I like the looks of bulletin boards and how they look when people have notes pinned to them, I have to admit, most of the boards I go by tend to be empty.  If it is that people are taking things down, how about something controlled more by our mailboxes instead?  Something like a community events section to our mailbox would allow for community events to be posted and advertised (perhaps for a nominal fee) and the posting would last for x amount of days.  Since the posting is via mailbox, people can then delete notices if they wish or leave them in their box, and the system will automagically remove notices from the system as they expire.  And while we're dreaming, maybe the system could be set up such that people living in a region can advertise an event for a discounted fee to others within their area while those from outside the region would pay more.  Likewise, an Ur-wide advertisement would cost more to advertise than a local event.  This wouldn't solve the issue of people taking notes for events like a treasure hunt or what have you, but it might alleviate some of the perceived litter issues.

  • I leave notes around - thank-you notes, welcome notes, "please look after..." notes and notes I just hope people will find amusing. Also ads for special offers at [commercial plug deleted].

I find notes on notice boards to be very short-lived, I have no idea why people would take them systematically - I mean, fine if you like one and want to pass it to someone else, or if it actually offends you, or something, but to "keep the streets tidy"? Or the notice boards clear of notes? I wouldn't have believed people could be that... way... Meridian's RL example had me open-mouthed in wonder. Sigh.

I also find people "tidying up" any gifts I leave for others a bit un-necessary, too, though I guess that at least some of the time it's new players who perhaps don't realize that some of the stuff lying around has been put there for a reason by another player, rather than just respawning by itself.
Posted 14 months ago by Richard Head Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Kiss My Face and Richard: Yep, my RL example really did happen, and worse, actually, but I cut it short so as not to derail the thread.

Given that the guy who I watched rip down my missing kitty flyers pulled up in a car with a custom license plate that read "CLNUPSF" (clean up SF), and that the city confirmed for me that they had had so many complaints about this group that they were having the City Attorney look into it, I am erring on the side of compassion and assuming these folks have some serious form of OCD that manifests through compulsively needing to "keep the neighborhood clean."

I wonder if that's what's happening here? I certainly don't intend to throw diagnoses of mental illness at the people who pick up every note they see without reading it, but I am curious to know what your motivation is. Does it just bother you to see something "untidy" in the Glitch world? Does it bring up the same feelings that seeing a littered candy wrapper on the ground does in RL, like "Ugh, why are people such jerks, can't they just put it in the trash?" If we understood your motivations (and I'm sure there are multiple variants), maybe we could more effectively find a solution that worked for everyone.

How about it, note-picker-uppers? I'd love to hear you weigh in on what motivates you and how you'd like to see information shared within our community.

  • I hate the idea of more bulletin boards.

I like to leave poems on notes scattered about where they have something to do with the surroundings, like a poem about birds in a tree, or a poem about the desert in Kajuu.  Bulletin boards are sterile and businesslike.

Why can't notes be dropped on the ground?  What is "beautiful" about a sterile landscape? Geez, no one is forcing you to read them, and they usually get picked up by some interested person or otherwise disappear on their own. Honestly, I love it when people put something creative or fun on a note and leave it for me to see.  There is even a group dedicated to collecting these sayings and archiving them. The Glitchian History Society

ETA: I would actually love the ability to make notes "sticky" so they can't be moved for some period of time, like a day or so perhaps.  Maybe this could be an ability for Penpersonship II.

  • @Sterling Writer:  It's a fair point that 12+ hour locks would easily lend themselves to griefing.  For longer locks, i was more thinking of notes in the neighborhood streets.  Tho' for that, honestly, i'd love to have a bulletin board like the apartment buildings have.  It's interesting to me that boards in buildings seem to be so little used -- i know the street where i live would use the heck out of one.  In just the past few days alone we've had 3 notes scattered under our street sign.  It's the easiest way for us to communicate with each other as neighbors without having to spend a pile of currants sending a piece of mail to every single resident.  I mean, sure, our neighborhood also has a group set up, but i know not everyone spends a lot of time in the groups area.

I'm sure TS will come up with a solution to this far more elegant than anything i could ever think up.  Looking forward to whatever they eventually devise to make it easier for neighbors to communicate with each other.

i thought of the treasure hunt at the end of beta, when i'd finished most of the skills and people were talking about ways to make their own games within the game.

since there's a no-note beautification league, i won't be putting out any more hunts or games. i can just keep the currants.

  • I enjoy coming across notes.  I like the poems, I like the "hello world"s, I like the "please don't harvest this tree"s, I like the party invitations, I like the treasure hunts, I like them all.

I am unable to understand the mentality that insistently tidies up things that others don't wish to have tidied.  It seems ... selfish, for lack of a better word.  Bossy.

It's pixels, people!  Not litter, not spam, nothing that threatens fauna or chokes out flora or in any way damages the environment.  Pixels.  Walk past, don't read, continue on your way and find your purpose that doesn't involve screwing over someone else.

The bullying of ManiYani (the Beautiful girl) has left a bad taste in my mouth.  What's that old saying?  "Before you speak, think -- is it necessary?  is it true?  is it kind?  will it hurt anyone?  will it improve on the silence?"

So, when in Glitch, when tidying up or correcting others or leaving others uncorrected, let's ask ourselves from whence our motivation comes.

    Is it kind?

@imbri:  I'm sorry.  I didn't mean to make it seem like I thought you shouldn't feel the way you do.  You have every right to be disappointed and angry since you put so much work into something and may not do it now because of people being overzealous.

  • @flask - I saw two of your notes when you were running the scavenger hunt (and left them there for others once I had read them).  I couldn't find any of the others, and when I went back to re-read them, they were gone.  I assumed the hunt was over... but now I wonder if people just took the notes and threw them away.  :(

Suggestion:  What it if cost energy to pick up a note, either from the ground or off of a bulletin board?  Would that discourage clean up efforts by organized parties, or make note leaving more prone to griefing activities?  I was thinking that somewhere around 10-20 energy would be required for people to pick one up, and that might eliminate people trying to make a measly currant or two, since they'd lose more than they'd gain...
