Heads up, Grab those Subway Badges?

In global earlier tonight, I noted aloud that there weren't subway stops in the new areas of the world, and wondered why. Among other responses, we got this:

stoot barfield -  subway is not long for this world

When asked about badges, no further news was forthcoming. So, uh, might want to work on your subway badges!

(as an aside, I cannot imagine what it must be like to be stoot. everyone hangs on your every word, so you have to be reeeaaallly careful what you say!)

  • I don't think it's likely that the badges will disappear. If the subway indeed is discontinued, the badges would just become unobtainable.

  • coupled with /home homes, this sets me on edge. i really don't want to see a de-urbanization of ur! what will happen to the great apartment towers?! what are new glitchen going to think of gregarious bureaucratic hall without the quiet dignity of the nearby subway station? is glitch economy reverting to agrarian-based pre-industrial collect-and-cook? this is what happened to the roman empire right before the fall!

  • in any case, i propose organizing a subway badge run! i've been working on it the last few days but it's hard to get at least 3 people into it (to cut down on train waiting times).

who's up for a train badge train?
Posted 8 months ago by awdrone Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Noo, awdrone there's a bug that sometimes make the train leave too fast to register as a new event, so you ride forever and ever and ever.

  • I just got done doing a bit of grinding with Mr Davbow and Ermine the Unwise. It goes SO MUCH faster with three people! I'm going to bed now, but I am theoretically totally down for badge earning in the near future. :D

  • It would theoretically go faster with three people . . . . if that often didn't bug it out so that it doesn't count as a ride at all.

  • I hope this isn't true unless there's some other alternate form of regional transportation implemented in its place. I remember as a newbie, teleportation was not a priority for me to learn with all the other skills there were, especially since it was such an energy drain. After I had discovered crabs and the tool vendor in Cebarkul, if not for the subway I would have only stayed in the crab area and never ventured out. I remember walking from the ancient lands to cebarkul one time (to save the 50c fare, which at that time was a lot of currants to me), and the long walk really burned me out. Now that I have higher levels of teleportation it's not a big deal, but please, won't someone think of the newbies! ;)

  • Oh man I am so behind on those badges :( Count me in for a group.
Posted 8 months ago by Csophae Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'd be upset to lose the subway too :-(

Although part of the reason I'm so far behind on those badges is my avoidance of it since I got fully skilled on teleportation... which rather suggests it isn't that useful.

If my understanding of the subway bug is correct, you can avoid it by jumping back onto the train going in the OPPOSITE direction. I think that that forces the game to give you a different instance of the subway car.

Omnika has a good point... just cos we're lazy teleporters now, doesn't mean that the subway isn't a great resource for relative newbies.

Count me in for a subway badge run some time.

  • Another possibility I'm not seeing mentioned is that teleportation might be one of the skills that's becoming an upgrade instead.  In that scenario, newbies wouldn't sacrifice any skill training in order to port.

  • Ohnoes! I must ride!
Posted 8 months ago by Mal'akh Subscriber! | Permalink
  • That would be sad to not have subways anymore.  I really enjoy riding it, though if they were replaced by sky gondolas...that would be cool too.  I have to agree that the subway really does help the newbies get around, and those of us who put off learning TPIV for a while.

  • I wouldn't want to lose the subways. I was thinking it would be nice to have some spur routes added as new areas open up. I still ride the subway a couple of times a week -- I use the time to fry, or shake, or blend, or otherwise cook. I find the sound oddly soothing.

  • OMG I'm on it! Screw these areas and animals, I need them badges!

  • When I was a newbie glitch, I relied on and enjoyed the subway. And occasionally, when I'm just not in a hurry and / or am low on energy, I still ride it. It's such a contrast to everything else ... its very presence reinforces the intentional absurdity of the game. I hope it remains in the game.

Posted 8 months ago by dm Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Subways are so 99%. In Glitch it is go big or go home.

Or keep grinding for those resources which, when the change comes, we won't have enough imagination to use so all we can do is sell them to the 60s. On their terms because auctions have been crippled by the 10 minute rule. The new economic system will be clear when the change comes. Until then, let's all try to grind up to 60 so we can be part of the 1%.

Too bad, because the subway was the last of the level playing field.
Posted 8 months ago by Smashin Grab Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I would hate to see the subway go. If I'm inworld, I use it every game day. Sometimes you just can't teleport (out of tokens or too low on energy and used up all your resources mining!). And sometimes, I just like to ride, it reminds me of being home in New York.

  • Smashin Grab-hoping that post was tongue in cheek but in case someone reads it as otherwise...

Unlike some of the arguments against the "real world" 1%, i think it's pretty safe to assume that all the Glitch level 60's, myself included, have worked our behinds off to get there :) (unless I'm mistaken and it's possible to be born level 60 or sleep your way to level 60). To assume that we now do nothing and just buy things instead of going out and getting them for ourselves would be inaccurate-most of us do our own harvesting in spite of the fact that we get no xp for it!

In addition, the imagination change may be an equalizer of sorts, based upon how xp and currants are converted.

All of THAT being said, I have no idea what that has to do with subways since most people have high TP skills long before level 60. lol

  • Now I'm torn between gunning for the subway badges or getting at the new animals. =(
Posted 8 months ago by Mal'akh Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Soupie   No, it is not tongue in cheek.   Levels are all about when you joined and who you knew to help you, not what you did.  We are all playing. It is just that we have been playing for 1 month rather than 8 months and now we must grind, as opposed to play, to catch up.

Unlike in the real world, where the 1% got there by mostly by merit or parent's hard (really hard) work, in glitch you got there by getting your invite 6+ months before we did.

Look at that super hilarious thread "Paying it forward." NOT, as any sane person might think, about the leaders helping the newbies... No, it is about the 1% deigning to help the 2%. Uggh.

This is the perspective where the sadness about the subways comes from.

  • I'm sorry Smashin Grab but I worked hard for level 60. Yeah I made a lot of friends along the way but their help was instructional and just made the game fun. Having friends or not having friends had nothing to do with my level unless you count the tiny xp I got for the friend badges?

I did a TON of grinding to get to level 60. I mined and donated and petted and seasoned and cooked like it was my job. And the the stuff I used? I gathered myself.

Yes I started the game long before you. I also hit level 60 ages ago. That doesn't mean I had to work any less hard. It just means I did exactly the same thing you're doing at a different time.

P.s. Sorry for the rant, but that comment bothered me. As far as the subways go, I never ever use them since I got the highest achievement. However, for the sake of newbies I should hope there is a way to get around other than teleporting.

  • I would be very surprised if they simply took out subways and didn't put in something more awesome in its place. Doesn't seem like something they'd do here, especially if it hurts newbies. So I'm not very worried, despite my current regular usage of the subway.

  • I am L60 and still like to ride the subways :)  Perhaps, TS has some kind of "replacement" in mind.  I seriously doubt that they will just cut out this piece that is so helpful to newbies without replacing it with something equally helpful.  Nothing else makes sense from a real world, business perspective.

  • I love the "almost-reality" sounds and look of the subway. A good place to travel from A to B while repairing tools, making stuff, or just enjoy the journey. It would be a shame to lose them and most unfair if people strive for the badges and then they are removed,
Posted 8 months ago by snygyst Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Smashin Grab The levels have nothing to do with when someone started playing the game. I've been playing since the first beta...and I am still only a level 27 after the big reset. Why? Not because I don't have friends..and obviously it has nothing to do with when I started playing.

It ALL has to do with the amount of time I put into the game. I would love to be a level 60, but I don't want to donate that much of my time to this game. I do LOVE Glitch very much..but I do a lot of other things outside this game.

Some day I will be a super huge level too. I play this game passively and I like it like that. The level 60s play it actively and that's how they like it.

AND on topic related.. I LOVE YOU SUBWAYS and will miss you if you leave us.

  • I remember being a newbie and agonizing over whether to spend the 50c for a subway ride or to walk! Once I got the major Completist badges and more currants, I rode the subway more, but still don't have all those badges... off to the subway station!

  • I appreciate how, even though the topic has veered into real-life comparisons to class structure (or whatever), it's still consistently brought back to the original topic of subways.

    That is all.

  • Unless I'm missing something, I really don't understand the rush to get to level 60.  This is not WoW or similar where you rush to end game to get teh uber gear and then raid endlessly.

The joy in this game is in the doing, in the journey, in the experience, in the learning of new skills and then using them to grow or create items to improve your surroundings and those of others.  Joy in the satisfaction of achievement, in the creativity of forming social groups and inventing your own entertainment (ex. Ur newspaper, community kitchens, etc.)

So, I really don't understand the rush to 60.

  • I heard some big corporation bought up all of the subways and is introducing a new mode of transport, the Glitchmobile.  We'll have to gather the new resource Ur'l (too many puns!)  in our Ur'l buckets and refine it to make Glitchmobile fuel.  Now instead of dirt roads on our streets we'll have beautiful paved ones and all of the old apartment blocks with be converted to parking lots or high rise garages. There will be new badges for parking in every lot.  Now that's what I call progress!  Don't listen to all of those conspiracy nuts telling you about Peak Ur'l.  There are hundreds of years worth of Ur'l in the ground, we won't run out anytime soon.

On topic: I'll miss the subways as well if they disappear.  I purposely did not take all of the TP skills so I still use the subway often.

  • @Raktivist I'm not sure, but to be safe, I'm assuming a ride is defined as boarding, riding to another stop, and deboarding. I hope that there isn't a minimum number of stops each ride has to be, because I've only been going one stop each ride.

  • [off topic, careful.  You might learn something]

dm, sorry to destroy that myth, but mostly what did in urban transportation in the late 40s and early 50s was the rush to suburban housing, fueled in large part by the VA-backed mortgage program for returning vets.  The other strong force was pent-up demand for private automobiles, which had been building since the Depression in the 30s.

A combination of coming out of the depression (thank you war and rebuilding industries) and the financing of the American Dream (a home of your own, on a large lot) made population densities fall to a point that public transit was unable to serve most of the US population.

It is only with the rise in gas prices that people have begun to change life-styles to a point that public transit is now financially feasible, even when it is funded by government.  It is still not a viable business for private operators.

  • Level 60 does not confer an advantage in terms of resource gathering.  The correlation between wealth and high level is there simply because playing the game gets you both levels and wealth.  The only advantage high level glitchen have is quoin value, and I don't think many of them are taking great advantage of it, which means it is being cancelled out by higher energy decay and teleport costs.

The idea that it is disdainful level 60s who want the subway gone and that it would go at the expense of new glitchen is preposterous. The subway is actually economically more useful to a level 60 with teleport 5 than a level 21 with teleport 4.  The former can take the subway a few stops to save 240 energy, the latter would only save 76.

As a new glitch I rode the subway a lot to get to the ancestral lands and back.  I intentionally avoided the teleportation skill because I wanted to move around in the world.  I took teleportation only when I felt I'd explored the world on foot and even now I don't teleport when heading to new regions.  I would definitely miss the subway, something that has everything to do with my play style and nothing at all to do with my level.

  • ETA: I'm a level 60, and I would be sad if the subway were gone. I actually take it daily IRL and have always been tickled that there was a subway in-game as well.

    [off-topic: dons urban planner hat]

WindBorn: yes! Another element to this is that the American interstate highway system, which was primarily built for national defense purposes, provided a way for the population to expand quickly and easily. In a sense, we expanded and began to design (sub)urban landscapes for the car because we *could*. The conditions were right. We had the space, we had the incomes to afford personal vehicles, land outside the city was relatively cheap, and the development industry obliged us with idyllic homes on large lots that were a quick, easy drive into the city where the jobs were. This was happening in Canada, too, just as it was in the US.

Pedestrians and transit takers were also affected by this growing car-based mentality. A City of Toronto planning report from the 1950s said that something had to be done--there were too many pedestrians on the sidewalks and spilling off onto the street such that they were getting in the way of the cars. (And this was at a significant transfer point between our subway and one of our major streetcar lines, where the sidewalks were too narrow.) The solution? To try to put the pedestrians underground. Of course. ...and no. way. Here's a pic of that very spot: chuckmantorontonostalgia.fi...

  • WindBorn and Voluptua, those are great points, and they're all valid factors, but GM still had a hand in deliberately destroying electric streetcar lines, by just buying them and ripping them up. It's not a myth. I'm not saying it's the reason or even the catalyst for the change. And again, I don't disagree with anything you said. I just disagree that GM's part of it is a myth, because it really happened.
