selecting where to put items

please allow us to, before putting items into our inventory, select which bag in which to place it. I have 15 bags, each with an assigned category, and it's a hassle to search through them in order to place them in the correct category. of course, this is partly my neat freaky-ness, but I'm sure I'm not the only one? additionally, whenever I shake milk or compress butter, the result gets randomly placed in another bag. please, program the result to appear in the same bag, or the next one if it happens to be full.

  • Or perhaps give the bags themselves a toggle... one to accept new items or not (open/closed maybe?). I hate when I'm not paying 100% attention or a lag bubble stops me from seeing where something went... then having to fish through several bags to figure out exactly WHERE the item got placed.

  • This becomes cumbersome, though. I think a more intuitive system would be better:
-If an item has previously been placed in a bag, place it there again. For example, if you used to have bananas in your small green bag, put any new bananas in there. Manually moving items would reset this "memory".
-Similar items in similar bags. For example, fruits will probably be kept together, spices together, and drinks together.

  • yes, +1 to RG. of course, the toolbox and spice rack help with this. perhaps we could buy some sort of a mini fridge as a form of bag, to keep drinks in? and a cornucopia for fruit? or is that TOO organized...

  • I think it goes into the leftmost bag with space. If so, put your cheese bag to the left when you're squeezing butter, etc. for now.

  • It would help if items bought, given or picked up automatically went into the leftmost bag while gifts from trees, animals, shrines, actions etc. loaded to the right. Quite often those bonus items are unwanted and it would make it easier to separate the wheat from the chaff.

  • I'm pretty sure items go into the leftmost bag when your main inventory is full. One thing I would like is the ability to easily exchange items and bags by dragging one onto a slot occupied by another. I have bags for most of the joined activities (two for food, one for mining, one for random collecting, etc.) but it's a hassle to change the bag locations since I have to the leftmost bag to an open slot, drag the bag I want to the open slot and then move the original bag to the spot previously occupied by the bag I wanted to move.

It would be much more simple if I could just drag my mining and minerals bag over the leftmost bag and have the two change locations.

  • I think placing newly picked-up items goes as follows:
-If there is an open slot, place it in the leftmost one.
-Otherwise, find the leftmost bag with an open slot and recurse.
-If no bags have open slots, then don't pick it up.

  • RG - I think you're correct about the way the pick up currently works... and I would totally love to be able to 'swap' items by dropping one on the other.

The problem I see with a 'memory' in the bag itself is a) it seems like a bear to program... and b) people like me who are constantly swapping out what bags have what in them. I often find loose bags and put together a 'starter kit' for new players. I think it *could* be more intuitive, like starting a new batch of meat in the same bag as the other batches of meat (or whatever).

I still don't think an actual open/closed (or maybe locked) would be any more cumbersome than the open/close when looking at or using items... it could be easily added to the drop/give/rename/open verb menu we already have. If it defaults to unlock, then people could choose to use the feature or not.

I tend to keep a large bag leftmost, the problems really only happen when that bag gets full... then it goes all sorts of random places.

  • Partly a bump, partly a +1.  Assigning a category to a bag would be great.  I have them named ‘food,’ ‘food tools,’ ‘drinks,’ ‘raw materials’ etc., but it takes a lot of maintenance because things fly into the first available slot.  Assigning types would be great.  I know I can buy a toolbox for those, but as an alternative, for food etc., a picnic basket type bag or something would be great.

  • Things going into the open bag would be most helpful so +1. Say I currently have a bag labeled food with 3 slots available and the bag is open and also have a supplies bag to the left of that with 2 slots available but bag is closed. Then I go to the store to get a bun, and carrots. Well instead of going into the open food bag, it goes into the closed supplies bag and then I have to manually move it. What a pain! If you don't have any bags open a pop-up could appear saying "You have no bags open at this time." and therefore you would be prevented from picking up the object/buying it until you opened a bag. Or you could just have a confirm button asking where you would like to place the item-but this would get annoying for every single item you acquired.

  • Could there be a way to select what type of items go in each bag? As in, give bags a selectable list you can choose from. Since some items already have their own containers, it seems like something that would be do-able. It's also a question of what type of categories the items belong in. Raw food, prepared food, rocks and such, etc. Even "any" could be a choice, so you have a place to put extra things that won't fit into their regular bag.

  • Or, if not assign certain items to certain bags, I would love an autosort option, organized by type of item, regardless of bags. So certain types of items (e.g. food) would be in the first few bags, and other stuff in categories after.

  • I would like to have an option like some bag addons in WoW that let you tick the type of item you want to go in each bag, I could see myself having food bags, mining bags, produce bags.

If you don't have any bags open a pop-up could appear saying "You have no bags open at this time."
I don't know about this, there are already too many popups in the game, I could do with fewer.

  • Anything that could be done would be appreciated.  I spend soooo much time trying to organize/rearrange my bags.

  • I like Holly Waterfall's idea.  I spend a lot of time arranging things.  I really wish we could, at least at home, just have things go in the slot in the bag that's open.

  • I agree with what Holly and Marla said. + 1

  • I think it would just be a lot easier to put any items picked up into the first available slot IN THE BAG I CURRENTLY HAVE OPEN.

  • Oddly, I like the situation as it is now. I have my inventory full of bags, and I appreciate knowing where to look when something is randomly given to me. If I had 'programmed' things to go into certain spots, then I would have to remember each and every thing that was pre-destined for a certain location and where I had pre-placed it. There's a heck of a lot of items out there. What if I designate too many things to the same bag without realizing it?

Also, I often absent-mindedly have random bags open as I go wandering about the world. If things were programmed to go into my open bag (or into a pre-selected location), what happens when there isn't an open spot? Does it then follow the left-most bag theory? Or if I forget that I had THAT bag open, and then later wonder where such-and-such went, there's going to be a lot of searching.

For me, part of the fun is trying to keep all my inventory under control. It's just part of the game to have loads of things on hand and to juggle them all. You can't make everything easy; that takes away the fun! If you do implement auto-sorting, please make it optional.

I do agree with the need to tone down the randomness of cheese-making, though. Those things just pop up wherever they feel like it. And I do like the concept of being able to swap things... but would that interfere with the ability to drag items to tools, for instance? Or to combine stacks of items into one bigger stack? So many things to think about.

  •  I too am a neat freak, so I agree with Holly, please do something to help us sort the bags
    thanks,

  • DiddlyPuff-That's how most of us feel now. How in the heck do we find the stuff we need. I understand that people learn/organize/think differently. Maybe an option to turn off would be appropriate. Hopefully some additional measures can be implemented so the majority will be comfortable with them. I still think the item going into the open bag is helpful but I understand that all the people won't be pleased all the time.

  • I'll add a '+1' to most of the ideas here. A category checkbox for each bag would be great. If items were automatically sorted into each bag, that would be awesome. However, next best would be into the open bag, if it has room.

Leftmost bag is frustrating very often. I have a bag of rocks, mine, and rocks go into my food bag. I harvest grain, and it ends up in my bag of kitchen appliances. Some control would be much appreciated, even if it's as limited as 'open the bag you want to auto-fill'.

  • Perhaps the Hardware Goods vendors could sell more types of specialty bags that work like the Spice Racks do. For example, Boomboxes for Musicblocks, Treasure Chests for mining, Coolers for drinks, Keyrings for Keys, etc.

  • Here is what I did during the last test, and it worked the best for me of all the things I have tried so far.
    Left to right, I have:
    Empty slot
Small bag with my blockmaker parts, orb, Random Kindness, and teleport scripts from helping on  projects
    Big bag for Vegetables
    Big bag for Grain/Eggs/Meat/Butter/Cheese
Big bag for Fruit of all kinds/Honey/Ice/Mushrooms
Big bag for Prepared Food (including oils & syrup)
Big bag for Firefly Jars/Crystals/Paper/Quill/Emotion Bear
    Big bag for Drinks
    Big bag for Rocks/Peat/Planks/Guano
    Big bag for Earth/Loam/Barnacles/Jellisacs
    Big bag for Seeds/Music/Bubbles/Vapor
Small bag for Kitchen Tools (including a Tinkertool)
    Elemental Pouch
    Alchemistry Kit
    Toolbox (includes another Tinkertool)
    Spice Rack

The names of the Big bags get changed if my collecting needs change and I need a lot of something - but if I have 2 slots of something in the bag, I add that item to the Bag's name.

As I go around gathering/making things, they go into the bag they belong in. If the slot gets full, I see right away because it goes into that empty slot on the left. Or if I get a bonus item that I didn't have yet (gem, random food, music block, etc). I can immediately decide which bag it should go into, so that slot can remain empty. I try to always keep open the leftmost bag that has an open slot, in case I get extra stuff plus a random item, so I know where it went.

I also try to coordinate the items with the color of the bag somewhat. Since my first bag was blue and small, and I now use it for kitchen tools, I use blue bags for all my food & drinks. Rocks, earth, etc go into brown bags. Green is for Seeds. Etc. But really, as long as I label each bag regularly, I can find things more quickly.

In my cabinet in my home I keep my egg & bean seasoners, extra slots of items I tend to have a lot of (planks, vegetables, etc), a bag of music blocks (1 each), and a bag of emblems that I try to consider & contemplate every day.

Using this method worked for me so much better, I was a lot less frustrated during this test than I was previously. I like to help with Projects, so I do a lot of collecting of everything so I have a chance of having whatever is needed... my bags are usually quite full.

I'm still interested in hearing what methods other people use that work for them!

  • Zany -- I have been reorging my bags on a regular basis. I try to keep most full so that they don't become disorganized and only carry one or two that have open slots.

I like the idea of color-coding the bags. I would love to be able to display the name I add to the bag on the outside of it.

  • I have a similar system as Zany, but I have two tool boxes...one for kitchen tools (chrome), one for other tools - shovel, picks, smelter, grinder, etc. I keep two tinkertools in the tools toolbox.  I also color code my bags and label them by categories.

I also keep one slot open so I can see something new coming into my inventory...it really does help, and then you can move it promptly into the correct bag.

I like that the bags are generally flexible...otherwise you have too many open slots that other things can't go into (like with the tool boxes).

One thing that I try to do is never use the last one of anything that needs to be made (such as butter, cheese, flour, hot sauce), so that I always know where it will end up when I make it.

  • Zany-I do have my bags labeled and organized and color-coded but I guess I should rearrange their order. However, that might be a pain to constantly rearrange because if I am at home cooking then stuff needs to go in the Prepared food bag. However, if I am out mining then stuff needs to go in the supplies bag.
My stuff right now from left to right(i think):
    Small Bag-Emblems/Keys
    Big Bag-Powders/Bubbles/Tuner
    Big Bag-Crops
    Small Bag-Beans + seasoner/Allspice/Notes
    Small Bag-Drinks
    Big Bag-Musicblocks/Gems/Extra emblems
    Small Bag-compunds
    Small Bag-Tools (hoe/watering can/tinkertool/scraper/shovel)
    Small Bag-Extra bag
    Small Bag-Cooking Supplies
    Alchemistry Kit
Spice Rack (try to keep one of everything except allspice)
    Small Bag-Mining Supplies+Planks
my bear, orb, and some spinach are located in the remaining slots
All of my tools (except the ones mentioned) are in my storage cabinet. Mostly I do cooking at home so I figure no sense in cluttering up a bag. But now since bags can be stored in the closet-I might have to get a few more.
I still think stuff going into the OPEN bag would be helpful for me.

  • I think a clutch of specialty "bags" would be helpful:

    Kitchen Cupboard: for kitchen tools
    Refrigerator: for food items

If we get even more specialty tools for gardening, perhaps even Garden Shed?

Having items automatically zoom to those "bags" would be helpful.  Barring a slot in a specialty bag, they can go to backpack or general bag slots.
