New GPS position and look

There is a new design and position for the GPS system (click a street on the map and go to "Set as Destination").

Throw some feedback here :D

  • Alright, hit your reload buttons! Throw any new feedback in here :)

    You'll notice:

    1) Uses an arrow in-line with the text
    2) You get your "To" and "Next" at the same time
    3) Tooltip for new users on the arrow button that let's them know they can auto-walk!
    4) A "Return to world" link if you are off your path so you can easily get back on it

(as well as the changes mentioned before)

  • Definitely like the old way better. The hand doesn't look right to me.

  • I like the "look" of it. Re: the changes-
    1) never saw the hand (you fixed b4 I was on but the arrow is fine
    2) to and next seems helpful for newbies
    3) as does "tooltip" for autowalk
    4) not sure what the return to world feature does yet

I still have to ask though, what was wrong with the old way? I liked it up top because for me it is less intuitive to look down at the screen then up.

Players who keep their eyes at the top of the viewport are a tiny minority (we've never come across them in testing and almost everything we put at the top of the screen is very hard for people to notice) — most people keep their eyes on their avatar while they're playing. So, that's the main reason.

In addition, the old placement often covered up things like signposts when they occurred at the right edge of levels, especially when zoomed out. When a signpost is covered, it's nearly impossible to use in the normal way and not everyone knew that clicking on the arrow automatically selected the signpost.

  • good thing you removed that hand :p
I like the way it's easier to close it now when you have arrived
(but the "click to be auto walked" tooltip still kinda blinks when you hover the "check" button)

  • It's amazing to me that some people never realized the old arrow auto-moved you. I'm in the camp of liking it near the mini street map up top because I regularly use the click-mini-street-spot-to-go-to-spot so now my click-to-automove features are in two different places. But I suppose I'll adjust.

  • I think I will be totally used to the new GPS pretty soon. The only thing that I definitely don't like is that the length of the space that it takes changes with the length of the street's name. This moves the arrow right and left as you change streets.

When I am in AL, I like to keep my mouse cursor over the arrow. I run using the keyboard arrows and then hit the mousepad button (I use a laptop) and, voila, I don't need to pick the street sign. It is especially handy when running away from jujus.

With the new system the button keeps moving and I have to move the cursor all the time.

  • I too much preferred having this in the top right hand corner, to me it was as easy to use as a rear view mirror in a car.
I truly hate having to look back and forth twix two places now (they're just a bit too far apart to be able to read them both with the same gaze) ~maybe you could move the location map to the bottom right hand corner too?
Super glad you got rid of 'the Hand'!

  • I like the new position, having it at the top annoyed me because it did often block sign posts etc. but I liked the hand  :(
Still, it's nice to see the devs responding to the views of the players.

  • It bugs the heck out of me that the mini-map and the new GPS are proportioned differently. They don't line up. It's also weird to have them separated. They are obviously functionally related, but they are visually separated in a non-intuitive way.

In principle, I think the GPS design can eventually work, but only in concert with another redesign of the right hand side of the game screen. Chat, groups, and players are unmanageable. Lumping teleportation in with chat? Weird. Having a main map that pops up, a mini-map that persists, and a local map... all with different UIs and screen locations? Too confusing.

In general, things are getting less consistent, not more.  I have to look in 3 different places now for location info. Notifications and growls are all over the screen (on top of the game port, on the bottom, in local chat, in the corners). Honestly, in my view it's become something of a hot mess. (A cute hot mess, but still.) Menus to the left of me, pop-ups in the center, pseudo-tabs on the right, I'm stuck in the middle with too many affordances and not enough clarity.

I hate to be the bringer of the negative, but I think some simplification and ground-up rethinking about affordances is in order.

  • I realized today why I preferred the auto-nav in the upper right under the mini map: because I close the map view with the red X. Before I would open the map, set a destination, click the X (in the upper right) and then click the auto-nav arrow. Now those actions are farther apart, more mousing.

That being said I'm starting to close the map by htting the M key. It still isn't intuitive to look for map/nav things in the lower right but I will probably get used to it. Sigh.

  • I love the new navigation system. The old one took up too much of my precious screen. I also absolutely love that I can dismiss it after arriving at my destination by clicking on the big ol' check mark - that's something I have been wanting for a long time.

  • I like the new gps system a lot! The hand didn't bother me, I didn't even notice the change to the arrow.

Having it up where it was was before was totally counter intuitive.

  • I like how it is now. It really makes sense in the new UI, I like it's little home. Feels alot more intuitive now!

  • I like it in the lower corner (although I see I'm in a minority) and like the arrow much more than the hand.

(And I was one of those people who never realized you could just click on the arrow, and I've been around since April and have a level in the mid-40's. I'm, um, not very observant.)

  • Okay, I'm getting used to it being in the lower right corner. I always knew about the arrow. The font and how it brings up the map are nice. I DO have one tiny little suggestion though. Nit-picky but might help those who get lost easily....On the top where it says "current location" could it also say the "current world"? I often forget where I am at. Not what street but what area. Having the current location be labelled "Doon Way in Groddle Forest" is much better than just "You are on Doon Way". TIA!

  • Just as I was starting to like the new position, I found myself unable to click Chickens as I was traversing Foggybottom Stritt.  The new locator was getting in the way.

I love the style of it, but the position is not great.  Maybe to the top-left of the street map?  That would keep it out of the way of most things, just how the street map is out of the way.
