Solution to Nausea and Headache Discovered!

I was excited to discover this!  I just played for the first time since iMG without getting naseous and headachey.  The Growl at the bottom has been bad for me and I believe some others as well.  The bright white letters give me a headache and the movement makes me toss my cookies.  I have been struggling with this.  Today I zoomed out to look at the view in Muufo and discovered that I was no longer sick!  I tested and found that even just 2 zoom outs works for me.  If this is an issue that is limiting your play, give the Zoom a try.  Experiment with it.  I am sure you can find relief with minimal zoom that will also allow you a good view of the play window.  I am once again a very happy little Glitchen!

  • You get nauseated and throw up at the sight of small moving text? That's a bit extreme.

I have had no problems at all with the new text at the bottom, in fact, it's out of my way for once and doesn't clutter my screen after milking a bunch of butterflies.

However, it WOULD look more aesthetically pleasing if it just simply faded out instead of flying around. It can be , at the very least, somewhat distracting.

  • For those of us with older eyes, everything has been trending to the teeny-tiny in a bad way. Zooming out just exacerbates this, alas.

Fading would be good. Or a brief glow-n-fade.

  • I'd prefer no text on the screen at all. The dark boxes on the left were always so annoying! The text at the bottom is much less obtrusive, but still catches my eye and confuses me for a split second. I think I read in another thread that it is going away eventually and will only appear in local chat.

  • Some people have problems that are extreme.  You know, like the kinds of things that are symptoms of medical problems like epilepsy and various other nervous system diseases.

It doesn't really solve the problem or even help find a cure to dismiss them as if people had a choice on how to physically react to light/motion inputs that cause nausea.

  • I'm with Brib, the flying off the screen made me a bit nauseous also.  Brib, glad you found a solution!  I know you can't play a lot of games because of the motion issues, and this was one that you were really enjoying.  So, glad to hear that you found something that worked for you.  I may try the same to help me too!  Thanks for posting this idea...though, yes, it would be better if they changed it to a fade or something less movement-y.

  • I wear glasses.  Reflections contribute to my problems.  I have been told that this "growl" is not final and they may make some changes.  My physical reactions may seem extreme to you and they are "extreme" to me.  I have been upset about this issue as it has limited my playing and I am very happy to have made this discovery which gives me some relief and allows me to play more.

  • i also got really sick to the point of throw up with some other games.. but not in Glitch:)
somehow, when the white letters appear, i tend to look at the right bottom of the screen, cause i feel like there's another glitchen running in my bags lol... yeah i told me it was just in my imagination, but why it keeps happening o.O?

  • the only time I became nauseous playing was when zoom first arrived and I zoomed ALL the way out and inn and out and in... Oh just the thought. When I got bored I "thought" I zoomed back to normal... I instead was a level zoomed in. Made me sick for hours. Haha. Glad you found something to help

  • I've found zooming out makes me less out nauseous, the background moves less

  • I have been fortunate not to have much of a problem with Glitch, but I know what these kinds of problems are like.  Almost all FPS games, and games that involve 360 degree camera movement make me motion sick.  I can't watch 3D movies, because I am way too likely to have a week-long migraine afterward.  I would  also  prefer fade or vertical scroll to the side zip for the growl, though I like the new placement.  I appears to me that it accelerates as it goes; even if this is an illusion, it makes the problem worse.

  • I can play first person shooters without a problem, but having moving/distorted/weirdly behaving text makes me feel urpy. Headachey, nauseated. I really have to start limiting my playing time here before that hits. Maybe it will be a good thing.

I think my discomfort with the text stuff *might* be related to the fact that I had vestibular neuritis once. I had a complete recovery through vestibular rehab, but it seems to really trigger the nystagmus. My eyes feel more jittery after playing Glitch lately than they did when I was playing LOTRO - just too much text moving in too many windows in all directions.

Vision is something that takes place in frequencies, just like sounds. I learned that while I was recuperating from the vestibular neuritis. Something about text trying to force my eyes to read it at an unfamiliar pace (as an involuntary reflex) by making the text be "slow" or "fast" just doesn't agree with me. I've been using sticky notes to mask off that part of the screen, but I can't say I love doing that. I'll try the zoom out!

It's nice to know I'm not alone! It's a bit odd to see people insisting on saying that they don't have the problem when this has come up in other threads (there have been more than a few) on the same subject. Is that how those people reply when someone else has a cold, or any other bother or worry or thing making them feel unwell? To say "Well, I don't have that problem!" Well... Good for you? Thanks? :-/ So nice to see a *solution* and some support for it and the people bothered by the problem here.

  • Oh, man...thank you for this. My solution to not trigger migraines was to turn the brightness up on my screen. That still gives me a headache, but nowhere near as bad as that flying text. I can't wear my glasses while playing or else I'll feel drunk. It's weird.

Now, i just need to learn how to zoom. =)

  • Jarhaven, the - (minus symbol) zooms outward so that everything appears smaller. + zooms in, and 0 resets it at the normal view.

  • I think text at bottom of the screen should not fly off. I felt this was a bad idea from the moment I saw it.
Posted 7 months ago by gimmegames Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yea, I don't have problems with it, but I can see how it could cause them. Fortunately they did say that the growls aren't all finished being tweaked, so hopefully they'll change it to some sort of fade or something that will help out all the people that it does hurt (I'd like the text to stay in that location, though). I'll keep my fingers crossed and am glad that for now there's some relief!

  • Update!  The Zoom out is working great for me, I have played two long sessions now with no nausea or headache.  I got tired but that's my own fault - Lol!  I hope this is as helpfult to others as it has been for me.  There is also an added benefit - I am now seeing a broader view and it is beautiful!  Groddle Meadow never looked so good!  I have also found a few Kukubee heads I had missed and i always keep a look out for them :D

  • Growls are now fading out rather than zooming off to the right of the screen!

I didn't have anywhere near the problems that some of you did with this, but the movement was distracting at times.  Yay for the devs!

  • (The white crop status box, however, still partially covers the growler so you can't read it while gardening, maybe that'll be the next fix ;)

  • Thanks so much devs for the change to fading off the page!!!!  Much better than the movement! :)
