Badges linked to Upgrade Cards

Hey,
I'd firstly like to give all credit of this idea to Liza Throttlebottom. She made a status about this and I thought this idea would be a really fun incentive on achievements. This is what she had to say:

"Anyway, I was thinking about how pointless badging is (With badging being the pursuit of badges with utmost zeal) and wondered why it had to be that way. Upgrades are a nice way to improve our characters, but their benefits and origins are quite nebulous. I'd like to see the two inextricable tied together. Most upgrade cards would be more interesting if they were tied to a badge that's relevant to the upgrade and not completely unrealistic. IE no badge that does something nice for teleporting that also requires you to earn Z class. Flatulence complete."

Now, I don't agree that badging is a pointless pursuit because I personally like doing it for the badge itself and the iMG and favour rewards with it. It's also like that with many games who have achievements you get the achievement and you get something like XP (in most causes). However, Glitch has upgrades which is a unique thing and as Liza says I do think it would be nice to have a have a tie in between badges and upgrade cards unlocked.

I don't think ALL badges should have an upgrade linked with it as that would be a bit too much. For new players especially the most basic of upgrade cards should all be purchasable without badges because they may want to get on with other things and not have to worry about that. I think the badges that should have upgrades are a few easy, a fair amount medium but mostly the higher difficulty ones. So they can bring in really highly rewarding upgrade cards think about something like the 2001 egg making badge. Maybe something like a 20% energy reduction when you make eggs. Or for the 10,000 teleporter badge a 40% energy reduction when teleporting and 1 or maybe even 2 extra map teleports per day?

What do you all think about this? :)

  • Obviously I approve of this idea being implemented in some way ;)

  • The problem is that we don't know what upgrade cards already have badge requirements tied to them.  I suspect there are quite a few that already do this.

Most of us had completed a large portion of the badges when upgrade cards were released.  If the lower level upgrades required a lower level badge, we had no way of knowing that.

So, can you describe to me why you believe this isn't already the case?  As far as I know from the few questions in Live Help, this is how it works right now.

  • Well I don't know if this is already the case. If this is already in the game I am fairly certain there are no upgrade cards linked to high difficulty badges (which is part of this idea) because none have been reported by the players with them. This could be an extra implementation into the game.

This status discussion illuminates one such example. You may go through and read all relevant posts and replies, but this reply highlights the example that I've been using for my point since I proposed the idea in an update :)

The example basically goes 'In the current system a glitch can take a long hiatus from the game, and come back to find they've learned all the skills. They start playing again and decide to favor Animal Kinship. By earning iMG by doing things with meat, perhaps cooking as well, they could feasibly buy all the mining cards without even buying a pick!'

In real life I think that might be akin to spending hours studying how to hit a perfect serve in tennis, and then going out and, in practice, hitting aces right off the bat. Back to glitch, I think it's necessary that a player earn lower level badges like Master Blaster and the ones before it by practicing their skill, before they are able to upgrade it to its fullest potential.

Not to mention not yet existing cards like the ones iDylan described. I think that's a really interesting take, and one I didn't consider. If the subway badge like 23 subways ridden made it so you could buy an upgrade halving the fare... Well I think that'd be really cool :) And making it badge related like that is cool, because, if you never ride the subway, you never have to see that 'useless' upgrade that doesn't fit your play style.
