An idea for the Ancestral Lands

Have you ever been running through the Ancestral Lands and crossed paths with another Glitch who then runs off to the street that you just came from? Did you want to yell, "NO! Not that way!"? Or, did you wonder what street they just left so you could take another path?

Well, here's my idea: When I meet another glitch in AL I'm going to tell them in local chat what street I just came from. That way, they can choose a new route if they like, instead of wandering past all the empty dust traps I just sprung.

And, maybe, if the idea catches on, other glitches might do the same.

I can even type "Hello! I just came from ....." in local chat before I go, so it won't take but a second to type the street name (or an abbreviation of it) if I run into someone there!

If you like this idea, give it a try and spread it around! :D

  • I'm spending a fair bit of time in AL these days, and this would be very helpful. I'm going to try to remember to do it :)

  • I do this already. No one listens.
Posted 6 months ago by Jarhaven Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Not the best at typing. By the time I finished typing  "I just came from blah blah street" I could do a whole street.
Posted 6 months ago by UrgleBurger Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Ultimately, if this catches on, we won't need to type more than a few characters: "MW2" for Mart's Way 2 or "YY4" for Yokel Yarn 4.
Also, typing "Hello! I just came from ....." before entering AL can be a time saver.

  • Another potential time saver, type in the "Hello! I just came from...", then hit ctrl+c to copy it. Then each time you'd only have to hit ctrl+v to paste the initial blurb and then add in the street you're coming from.

Going to try this the next time I go to the AL! :D

  • +1  I'll give it a shot for a while, see if people catch on.

  • I can see two drawbacks apart from the typing issues:
    1) A fellow player might get a qurazy coin on the street you just visited
    2) Wanting to collect time coins that players who have all skills haven`t collected
but a good idea in principle .

  • i tryed to do this already, but by the time i finished typing, the player was already gone! powerful hairball! the thing is that sometimes i leave quoins behind, so i'll type something like: z rd ne +q... well, second thought, if someone says that to me i'll be very confused... we should practice this with charades :))

  • The ideas for cutting down typing are a help, because otherwise people would be gone before I could send a chat.  Also remember that some folks may be heading in a particular direction for a completionist badge, a quest, or some other reason, so don't expect that your information will always affect their choices.

  • Hmmm... Often, when I pass a sand trap it has already sprung.  I just whirl on by.  If someone is following me, there will be a chance that the sand trap may be ready to set off when they pass by!  As with a lot of mechanics, this one doesn't need so much massaging.  But it is a nice idea.  Thoughtful.
Posted 6 months ago by Prissimpia Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Another possibility would be an in-game mechanic. Maybe the street signs show more "wear" the more recently that street has been accessed.

The AL are interesting because you generally want to avoid other players. Maybe a more radical solution would be to make traps and quoins respawn faster the more people use the street. That would tend to counteract the anti-social nature.

  • Please don't take this the wrong way but don't feel the need to IM me when you pass by because you will not get a reply. I spent weeks recording what types of quoins were on what streets, where paper trees are, etc and designed myself a couple of routes that I never deviate from and it has been very successful. Where you are going and where you have been don't make a difference to me other than if you are going where I have already been than you are not going where I haven't.

I would however gladly participate in an AL group where people could post when they start and finish AL runs so that we could choose less busy times to do our runs. Example if 5 or 6 people are currently in the AL doing runs, we could wait until the number drops.

I have a feeling that after beta, an influx of new players would make the AL rewards far less so I propose TS give us 4 more AL zones or something similar!
Posted 6 months ago by UrgleBurger Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm with UrgleBurger on that and yes a few more zones would be great!
Posted 6 months ago by WeavingTheWeb Subscriber! | Permalink
  • +1 to Urgle, a few more zones and/or increase in re-spawn rates for both quoins and traps.

@ DrM, it's a sweet idea, just not very practical -IMO-, when I'm doing the AL Run, the last
thing I want to do is stop and type (or read) anything, I don't even want to stop for Mail Froggies
    or the Rube, lol!   ;)

  • While in principle I like the idea, I'm probably with the rest that will likely miss it when someone else types it, and forget to/not have enough time to type it myself before they change streets. Heck, I miss it still when they automatically tell me a qurazy quoin is on the street.  When I saw the game give us our street transitions, I was hoping it would provide that info on others, and in the AL the street the came from as well as the street they just went to.

Although for me, that's kind of part of the fun...trying to figure out if I can properly pick the right street to not get the one they just left. But for me, I go to AL for the quoins...the dust traps are just bonus.  People have been getting better about not taking quoins they don't need (ie, if max happy, they leave the mood quoins), where possible...so that often means even if a person just left the street there is still something I want to collect there.  Also, as others have mentioned, often the dust traps/quoins will reset by the time I get to them. Not to mention it might be a qurazy quoin street for me.

Again, love the idea in principle...just not sure how practical/feasible it is...and heck, I've even had people trail me into a street when I was ahead of them...and it tells you which street I've gone to...so not sure if people really mind that much, or just run specific routes.

  • I wouldn't participate in this, just because, I never pay attention to what streets I came from.. I just cannot bother to remember. >_<

I would however not mind if TS were to make it so when a player appears in the AL, a note accompanies their name like "[player name] has just arrived, from [street name]!"  That way it's announced in local chat, you don't have to be responsible for it yourself, and you can scroll up to see which street it was when you're ready to leave the street.

Also what others have said, about the quoins, and paper, and etc.

And speaking of the AL.. I still wish there were animals there.  :< *pouts*

  • Here's the cool thing about Glitch: everybody has their own way of playing. So, this might be a useful idea for some, for others it might not work. But, it doesn't *hurt* anybody...if I tell someone where I've been and they don't care, then they can just ignore me! But if it's useful for them, that's great! (And I'm not suggesting that anyone feel *obligated* to do this, either!)

I did just try it and the other Glitch thanked me and told me where she came from, too. So, yeaaah! :)

  • For real Gonne.  :: nods :: .. if it doesn't hurt anyone they should do it.

... Hence why they need to bring back animals to the AL ... >_> (I forget what their reasoning behind that was actually, maybe it was hurting some players??)  ok and that's the last I'll bring that up lol... :D

And That's cool that you were able to exchange info and stuff for the betterment of each others play.  :)

  • Why not just improve the Local Chat? We get ourselves our own "You entered X Street from Y Street", why not "Newvisitor showed up from X Street!"? Teleports could discard the message and have the old one ("Newvisitor is here!")
