Subway improvements

I haven't been playing that long, but I've gotten a house and started using the subway a bit, and it seems to me that it could be improved.  I searched this forum, and only found the routing suggestion.

1.  A way to specify what stop you're getting off at at the beginning of the trip, so that you don't have to be continually prompted to get off (or not).  If you're on for a while, and trying to use the time to do cooking or something, it's kind of annoying and sometimes gets in the way.

2.  The auto-router could use the subway in its calculations (if you have Your Papers, of course), and also work inside the subway (so it would say "Get off at Groddle Forest Junction" or whatever while on the subway, and if you haven't memorized all of the subway street names yet, you don't have to consult the map to find out when you're stop is coming up).  A way to set the nearest subway station as your destination, without having to click around the map to find it first would be cool, too.

3.  Maybe a way to prepay a bunch of subway tickets ahead of time for a reduced price, like you can IRL.  Surely the bureaucrats could arrange this with some more waiting-room thumb-twiddling?

  • I like all of these ideas, but especially the first one! That would be awesome.

  • I would love to have the hub name appear as well as the street name when the stops are coming up. However, while it would be more CONVENIENT to just say you want to get off at a particular stop right when you get on, that's not really how it works in real life either. You can't decide "I'm going to read this entire magazine" and have the conductor pick you up and put you on the platform when you get to where you're going, just so that you can keep reading. Move your cooking to the side while it's going, and pay closer attention to where you are so that you're ready to hit the check mark when you want to get off the train :)

  • I agree with Chuck - I think the "auto-disembark" option would make subway travelling a touch too easy. Reminds me of the time as a teenager I got on the London Tube's Circle line in the wrong direction with a friend... we had time to kill so we just went the long way around :-)

I love the idea of the auto-router using the subway though. Have to be an option though - like how GPSs have an "avoid highways" check-box... sometimes you want to hit all the intermediate streets to gather some easy meat/milk/fruit/beans.

  • I suppose that's true, Chuck, but you also don't have someone prompting you to get out at every stop.  Maybe there could be an interaction with the subway doors to get out when the train is stopped?  I just don't like the pop-up.
