I have not 100% decided yet but...
Lobby: Information center for the Wall of Texts project on my street and gift shop.
Floor 1: Lord Bacon-o's Alchemporium (essences, potions and the like)
Floor 2: All Things Dirt
Floor 3: LBO's Bisto
Floor 4: Museum/Gallery
Floor 5: Crap For Less (guano and plops for sale)
Floor 6: The play room. (games, toys, cubimals, etc)
Top Floor: Dance club (to be named later)
I'm planning on selling all my stuff in the lobby and using extra floors as workshops to hold all of my crafting, so that I can decorate my house like a house, finally. :)
If i make one it'll be much more about decorating and doing something fun with it. A cafe? A museum? A party spot? A puzzle palace? I'll mostly just enjoy making the floors look like any one of those things given the decorating resources we have. :D
I'm pretty sure I'll never go full out and actually make it a proper store; mostly because I do not want to bother with all of the advertizing, competitive pricing, stocking, etc., which would make Glitch feel like more of a job than a fun relax game. There's still other ways I'd rather make currants (although if the vendors go away, I might re-think, but I *really* hope they don't).
I really made a tower to have a major project, but I am also making pretty good currants from it
Lobby: greeting area/ waiting room
1st floor: tinctures and potions
2nd floor: more potions, crystals, fibers, other items
3rd floor: restaurant
4th floor: under construction, will be emblems and cubis.
Since I have people stopping by due to the 3 routes I'm on I made my tower (only 1 floor so far) I made my tower a Deli/Pet and Misc. supply shop. Under ah prices for a few things people need.
I plan mine obviously to be a store (cubimal, ooobviously, hehe ;))
But I may sell other things.
Other people may use it as a second home, a party house, showing off things, a little parlor, Or.. Imnot sure. Haha.
Mine's a temple with all my icons and eventually i want to build ALL THE FLOORS and have a floor dedicated to each giant. but of course there are 11 giants and we can only have 9, so suck it loser giants (you know who you are)!
Excellent question. As one of the the few, if not only people in Glitch is is rather undecided (and more leaning towards not having one) I can see the possibilities, but honestly, i just can't see myself utilizing one the way everyone else has.
I can pretty much see someone making a department store out of all this (c'mon, someone out there has to have one by now) but for myself, I hardly sell anything, hardly throw parties (I'm really not fond of parties, TBH), have crappy decorating skills, so, yeah, I think I will probably end up being one of the only Glitches without a tower, unless I get talked into it for whatever reason or change my mind, for whatever reason.
My plans so far only extend as far as getting all the floors in. I've no idea what I'm going to do with the space. Haven't even filled up my house yet.
Right..I am so glad to have come across this thread..Because I was just saying in the new update it would be good if we could collect some ideas because I have no clue what I am going to use my tower for...although I have to keep saying..I love it, cos I do...I love it..I have no clue why..I just do..LOL ..It's empty..and will remain that way until someone hits me with an idea stick and the light comes on.. :) In the mean time I will just keep adding floors..which in actual fact..I haven't added any yet..took me long enough to built it in the first place. :-/
Good point Papa L...why are there only 9 floors? 9 isn't prime...hmmm...should be at least 11.
I'm building one, but not quite sure yet what will be in mine, or what it will be called...or much of anything WRT my tower. I will likely sell things out of it...just haven't decided yet on what my wares will be...
maybe a display space. maybe a shrine to the giants. i plan to make a nice lobby. it will be wholly unremarkable.
i imagine, though, that towers will be a new and practically inexhaustible source of "come to my street" spam. there will be hundreds of bars and coffee houses and restaurants selling all kinds of stuff i don't need at prices higher than my cost to make them, so unless somebody figures out how to put in a bowling alley or something amusing that makes it worth going there, i'll just continue to make all the stuff i need.
i don't even remember the last time i bought anything to use.
I, for one, can't really see the point of towers aside of giving 60-level glitches something to toy with.
I mean, sure, you can sell things out of them - but so does everyone else, and in the end this amounts to having hundreds of places selling the very same things... only much more inconvenient than using auctions.
Also, I haven't understood yet whether the towers are considered "home" by the game or not. In the first case they might be slightly useful to throw parties and earn two or three badges... otherwise I can't really see their point. Can anyone enlighten me?
As for "Why towers?": because (1) some people just enjoy the building and having the goal, (2) many people want to show off a space they decorated without letting people into their homes, (3) they are a nice cozy room-like width and (4) they are a good foundation for other interesting things we can add in the future (e.g., player-made art, putting snaps on walls and giving them an "enter" verb so viewers can teleport to the place in the snap which allows owners to curate a set of favorite places in the world and also other stuff).
I'm glad Stoot said something because I still haven't see much of a point to the towers except, "hey look, here's a second house that everyone can access and grab stuff from." I'd be afraid to leave stuff on the floor by accident, and have it stolen.
If towers could be available in backyards as extra storage/workspace, I might be motivated to build one.
And as for towers as storefronts (golly, will we ever run out of Ur puns?), if most people are creating them, then there won't be many customers left to actually buy from them, like Ayzad said. It's like going to a concert where everyone is allowed to perform on stage, but there's nobody left in the audience to listen.
dm, re: "if most people are creating them, then there won't be many customers left to actually buy from them"
I used to think that way too and then I realized it was missing the point: people like to create the space, choose the name, design the vibe, decorate — if it's a store, select the merchandise, etc — they want to make something. It's not intended to fill some hypothetical (or real) economic-systems hole. So, it fails to fill that hole, you can't really blame it.
A better analogy than a concert where everyone performs on stage (which is sequential and has one central focus) is a souk or a bunch of interconnected villages or … something like twitter: is it a problem if almost all people have a small numbers of followers? Nope.
So, if it's not for you, but it is for someone else, that seems like it is a fine thing: if everyone did exactly the same thing, it'd be kind of boring. Later, when you get a way to have more storage/workspace and others don't want/need it that will also be fine.
Someone above here mentioned that he'd build a tower if it was a storage space in the backyard. Well, I do agree: people usually entertain guests in their homes, not in towers... I'd much rather have a better privacy control in my proper living place.
But I digress.
Actually, is there anyone else thinking that "towers" really look like mausoleums, or crypts?
I would like to explain that I was not being dismissive of towers but rather wanted to post an open-ended question where people could discuss how they viewed this new feature.
FTTB I have decided not to build but instead intend to help certain other players with their tower concepts. So far, so good.
(agree with ayzad - the outsides either look like mausoleums or civil war blockhouses)
For me, a tower is a better space for welcoming people over, since there's none of that key/knocking thing. If we can't have fine control over our buildings, then my home will be private storage and my tower will be a party space.
greenkozi made a museum of found notes from all over Ur, which I love. I was thinking of calling mine "What the @#$% Should I Cook For Dinner?" and having notes with my favorite recipes (RL food, not Glitch). I may still do that.
I hope someday we can make books, even if they only held like, three note's worth of text.
Why a tower for me? Because, as Stoot mentioned, I want to be able to make things that everybody can have access to. Maybe someday I'll have such fine aesthetics that people will even like accessing it! But for now, I'm winging it conceptually and really enjoying being random. Some sort of cheese lounge for now - nom du jour: Al's Cheese Easy (not ready yet). Who knows what it'll be next week.
I'm not doing it to make money, although I will eventually get around to pricing the cheese display just in case someone wants my old squeezed dairy products. I enjoy things like choosing the perfect drink pairings (Face Smelters with the Very Very Stinky, for sure) more than incoming currants.
I'm making mine into a machine room with supplies being vended, plus a hotel with a different theme for each floor (This is gonna take months, lol). And since I'm on the herb route, I'm also selling guano, in case someone wants to help restore a plot, and hooch.
Besides, with all the materials it needs to be built, I can imagine a few certain resource routes will see a lot more business, like the barnacle route, the wood route, the metal rock route, and the fuel cell route, to name a few.
Why a tower? I would guess they look better than mud huts and have more floors. Or it could be burrows did not have the same view as a 9 story tower. It could be that igloos would melt in the warm climates.
i love the idea of having a space for people to explore that i built and decorated.
i may end up selling a few items, but i don;t ever envision anybody's tower becoming a viable revenue stream.
i make nearly everything i need, and what i can't make i pretty much don't need. until the day when a thing offered for sale in someone else's tower is any different than that item offered for sale everywhere else, there's no incentive for me to make a trip to buy, not even if the items are offered for free.
if a player can craft an item that;s somehow different, then i'm all over it.
until that day, my tower, like everyone else's , is wholly unremarkable.
Not so fast @Blue ;) You haven't talked to Kukubee! I will be demanding igloos at the earliest convenience ;) An Igloo will look wonderful in my enchanted forest next to my little cottage~
