"City Planning" idea

It was suggested I post this here off another thread:

Just had an interesting thought:  High-level Bureaucracy  + Engineering allows one to do "City Planning," essentially allowing the player to use a specially-demarked area as a sandbox or whiteboard for designing new streets.  The Blockmaking and related skills allow one to build additional layers.  These then get submitted to one or more devs who decide whether or not this would make a good general form for an upcoming street project (when there's room for one in the queue, of course).  The guidelines could be kept reasonably simple (that is, no designing landscape to look like rude words or objects--or at least not *too* obviously so!), and the designer could get some suitable reward at the time the project reaches completion.  Thoughts?

  • +1 I like it.

I know there are some changes in street upgrades in the works. See this thread where stoot says "Instead, we have been laying the groundwork for the parts of the streets to individually upgradable allowing for (something much closer to) infinite choice/customizability."

  • As a planner IRL, I think this sounds like a neat idea... :)

  • I think Blocks in general need more application.
For instance givin the limit on housing, what if wood boards, blocks, and mortat could be combined to build new buildings? That would add a realtor/developer aspect to Glitch's realty listings. It would also go hand in hand with your planning idea.

  • The problem with this idea is that it doesn't scale well. It sounds good now when there are only a couple hundred people who are skilled enough to do this, but in a few months or years when there are potentially thousands (or hundreds of thousands!) of players wanting to build streets using this skill it will be rather impossible to fulfill all the requests. Even if only half of the current active members submitted one street it would be over 4,000 street requests. There's simply no need for that many new streets!

  • Perhaps instead of "City Planning" you go into "Architecture" where you are allowed to build your own home? Players could pick their amenities, with trade-offs (tree plots for gardens, or animal pens for plots) it seems reasonable.

Then the only people who would be forced to see genital-shaped houses would be the owner, and those who choose to enter.

  • you lost me at "submitted to one or more devs".

i would like a feature like this, using stock landscape templates filled out by players running around dropping platforms and ladders and buildings and machines. some basic logic about edifices not being allowed to overlap, to keep things from looking like a rendering error.

this sort of thing would not happen on public streets, but instead in individually or group controlled areas. a bit like a gated community, except that the group could throw open the gates for everyone to freely visit.

"private islands" might be a good way to achieve some separation from the "main game world" .. or perhaps the regions could be more integrated than that.
