Topic

Off Topic, Topic!

Now that there are now so many more people using the forums and so much to chat about. I have noticed some people go right off topic. Some times I find the new topic interesting and find I also start adding to it. But I know this is not forum etiquette and some people don't take kindly to it. sooo I thought why not make this as a topic heading then you can chat about anything and everything with out clogging up a specific thread.
So the topic of this thread is anything and everything, don't mind if you change the subject :)
Yes I know there is a social chat group and when someone ever uses it I might not need to make a thread like this one  :P

  • Good idea, Misha.  I posted somewhere else about the forum and mentioned as well about admins here to keep it in order before it gets too unwieldy.

The forum also needs sub headings and a decent organisational structure - at the minute it is just one big roll, and unless the subject is specific, it can be hard to find posts.  I also find it hard to get back to a thread I posted in earlier as I have a failing memory and can never remember the thread title.

I just checked the social chit chat group - last post 31 days ago.  I think the groups and forums serve very different purposes, and most people are going to keep on posting in the forum, so all we can hope is that they get cleaned up, sorted out and better organised.

  • @Bob Apple I was not saying it was you, although it is most of the time ;p Some people are social butterflies I know I am.  I would just kill for a spell checker in game.I find my inability to not be able to spell extremely frustrating. Even if people say they don't mind, I actually do. Very much so. Maybe one day.
I suppose that's what is so appealing about glitch. You can play it socially or mostly on one's own. I wonder how the people who don't like to chat or join in feel about glitch?

  • My spell checker works just fine on Glitch.  I get the wavy red lines each time I misspell something.  Perhaps you could check your browser settings to see if yours is turned on.

  • Glitch is a very strange little beastie of a game.

By the way, it's not so much that I don't like to chat; as a relative newcomer (just got in last week) I feel somewhat out of place and am never sure what to say. It seems like there is a well-established group here and I don't want to just barge in.

Also, for that first while (a day and a half or so) I was aimlessly exploring, doing most things by trial and error (like learning how to use the map and thus more aimfully explore things) and kind of ignoring most other people because in my mind they weren't all that important to my gameplay. I hope I didn't commit any faux-pas beyond the scheduled annoyance of the garlic kissing quest.

Once I got the hang of things, increased sufficiently in level, and could mentally multitask between getting used to nibbling piggies and becoming less inept at milking butterflies and the sheer oddity of being able to eat planks (does my character need that much fiber? Poor thing!) and things of that nature, my attention turned to the more social aspects of the game... and that was shortly before I had to take my leave of the game. And alas, the test is now over.

(Is it sad that I'm already addicted and impatiently awaiting beta testing?)

  • @ Diddily Please barge in! Yes, some testers have been around since alpha first opened and yes, there is a group of us that migrated over here a few weeks ago when a game we loved closed (Faunasphere) but everyone seems to be very friendly and helpful. Glitch is evolving its own wonderful and unique community and it is exciting to be involved at the beginning. I too am addicted and waiting for next test session----I have become very adept at thumb twiddling to while away the hours. Try it. It may help.  LOL

  • Thanks, Rachel2635. I'll try to be less tentative with this whole interaction business, though I don't think I'll barge in so much as quietly and carefully mosey on over, you know?

In other news, mosey doesn't look like a word anymore to me, and it is making me giggle when I say it. Mmmmosey. Mosey. Clearly my inner child is out to play in full force.

  • @windborn do you mean here in the forums or actually in the game play. I use Chrome and it has a built in spell checker, but during testing/playing and using help channel IM etc there is no spell checker?  Im doing the happy dance if there is one and I missed it. My spell checker once asked me if I wanted to change to a foreign language lol I don't think the one in Chrome is very good, sometimes i'm only a letter off and It has no clue what word i'm after.

    @DiddilyPuff love that name :)
Posted 20 months ago by Misha Subscriber! | Permalink
  • And thanks to you too, Misha. I suppose I should now mosey on over to the appropriate thread and explain all the yadda yadda yadda about the story behind my username, huh? It's not like I have anything better to do. No Glitch to play and all that. I'm all twitchy with anticipation. However did all you early alpha players manage to survive and not go crazy?

  • I got here early January and form then on there has been a test once every week or two. Apparently there was a good month last year or it may have been longer when there was no test at all :o

  • *moseys on in*  Hi Misha, thank you for the off topic, topic! I've been testing for just over a month and I'm still green around the edges. I have a few silly questions to ask and I can't seem to find the right forum to ask them in (without creating one of my own, which I'd hate to do). So here goes - Is there any kind of mail system/private way to chat with a friend? I see (dead people. just kidding, had to be done) random bit of conversations posted on my home page and this seems very odd to me.

    How do I get/find a caterpillar?

Hi DiddilyPuff, I'm also suffering from Glitch withdrawals ;)
Posted 20 months ago by Sadie the Goat Subscriber! | Permalink
  • A whole month? Does not compute. I don't think I would have survived. I also have a growing group of friends who are both intrigued by the concept of the game and growing tired of my constant 'THIS IS THE BESTESTEST THING EVAR' yammerings... hopefully I survive the current stretch without getting clobbered.

  • DiddilyPuff, I was on the waiting list for a long time watching the blog and progress of the game knowing "I had to play."  I was happy when I finally got jumped in. My poor hubby is sick of hearing me say "this is the best game ever" and I've played a lot of games ;) So chant as much as you like, I'll chant with you :)
Posted 20 months ago by Sadie the Goat Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Sadie the goat,do you mean in the game?,if you do,you just click on your friends name, then a list comes up ,one which is IM,i'm pretty sure that is private messaging, just between you two..:)

  • and i like 'mosey' ,right now i am 'moseying' round the house doing all my chores, ready for when the game opens some time this week,so i can play to my heart's delight!!..;D

  • Until I got in and actually got to play, I didn't really know what was waiting for me. I was just mildly curious, really. (Ah, how little I knew... and how much I have yet to learn....)

Out of curiosity, what's the preferred musical soundtrack for an Off Topic, Topic party?
Posted 20 months ago by DiddilyPuff Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Hi Joo's, yes that's what I was wondering about, thank you for the tip! :D

... now if someone could answer my caterpillar question, I'll be set for the next test ;)
Posted 20 months ago by Sadie the Goat Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @ Sadie The glitch wiki site is useful for finding answers www.glitch-strategy.com I just read that caterpillar can be hatched from butterfly eggs:) The site is also a good way to pass the time waiting for the game to re-open.
Posted 20 months ago by GreyGoose Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I think I've heard that the baby animals come from eggs? (I am so totally not there yet in terms of gameplay, though, so take the info with a grain of salt...)

Edit: Aww, just in the nick of too late.

  • I'm also trying to get all my housework and outdoors work done before the next test starts. It's not supposed to rain for a few days so I'm doing the mowing today. I have over 4 acres to mow and it takes over 4 hours to do it all. Imagine wasting 4 hours mowing while I could be playing Glitch! :(

  • Hi all i am another relatively new player been here for the last uhh three tests, just wanted to answer Sadies questions well best I can: ::: There is no private Mail /IM system out here in the forum at the moment, closest thing is to form a small group or join one with your friends, in game theres also no mail system but plans are afoot or is that abox . . . hmm anyways best you can do at the moment is to learn the skill penpersonship and that will allow you to leave notes outside your friends house, but be warned these can be read by any member of Glitch not just the person you intend it for. ::: The random bits of conversation are from your friends/ people on your friends list and are kinda like posting on your wall on a social network if you dont have all the people in the conversation on your list you wont see the whole conversation. ::: Caterpillars can only be obtained from hatching butterfly eggs, these can be either bought from an animal vendor or created using an egg spicer but you need the right skills to use and also the right skill to get a hen to sit on your egg and hatch it. ::: Hope these help, the more learned here can probably tell you the exact skills you need :)

  • yes i hatched a Butterfly egg,which then became a caterpillar,which i fed,then became a butterfly,actually i may not feed them next time and have lots of caterpillars..:D
Posted 20 months ago by Joos Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Oh, Joo's, the idea of a whole bunch of caterpillars in one place? So much squee! (Same with butterflies, but caterpillars are just cuter!)
Posted 20 months ago by DiddilyPuff Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Thank you all for answering my silly questions!

Hi Rachel, thank you for the helpful page, I bookmarked it :)

Hi Faereluth, thank you for the detailed information. I do think some kind of private mail would be great for this game, I look forward to that!

  • I figure that Glitch is more than quirky enough to warrant a few questions per individual, Sadie. No harm done by probing the collective hive mind.
Posted 20 months ago by DiddilyPuff Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Nice to see some new names here too

Just to clarify, Yes there is a privet way to chat but in game only. You if you see someone in game click on there avatar and IM them that will talk you to a private tab where you can chat in...well private, funny that lol OR Party chat in game is where you can chat together in small groups of 6/7 cant remember which. This chat is also private to just that group. Currently there is no way to private chat with anyone on the forums or your home page. Any thing you say on your home page can be seen by all your friends. Oh and all the people who added you as a friend that you did not add back [ that still erks me] Which makes for some interesting reading when you sometimes only see one half of a conversation.
    @PittyPat don't work to hard :)
I love the baby animals, I wish there was some way of keeping a caterpillar other than in your pocket.
Posted 20 months ago by Misha Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Thank you Misha for making everything more clear :)

I try not to read to many of the fragmented conversations that pop up... though I can help it sometimes, it does get interesting, lol.

  • aaaah forgot that caterpillars turned to butterflies once out of pocket..:( there goes my caterpillar plan..:-S
Posted 20 months ago by Joos Subscriber! | Permalink
  • No army of caterpillars? Aww, that sucks. (But my dream for eventually having a flock of butterflies at my command is still valid! Huzzah!)
Posted 20 months ago by DiddilyPuff Subscriber! | Permalink
  • if you can command them,then i salute you DiddilyPuff,lol! ..;)
Posted 20 months ago by Joos Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Well, considering my commands would probably be to make them flutter around and look pretty, my ability to actually command them would always be under question.
Posted 20 months ago by DiddilyPuff Subscriber! | Permalink
  • After the last test I could have pulled the wings off the nearest real life butterfly lol the milk 13? is it butterfly quest in one glitch day has driven me insane. I am not going to try that again until I have the no need to massage before milking skill ;)
Posted 20 months ago by Misha Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Once I got the tip to use the keyboard (enter key to select the darn butterfly, arrows to make the menu selection) rather than trying to click everything with the mouse (accidentally singing to the darn butterflies one too many times resulted in my first death), things got a heck of a lot easier.

13 butterflies does sound like a lot, though. Maybe I'll have to secretly scout out where all of the butterflies lurk and go there for my milking bonanza.
Posted 20 months ago by DiddilyPuff Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It's not finding them its re finding the one's you have massaged that's a problem. I got seven then the glitch day only ended. Hence a new day and quest fail :'(
Posted 20 months ago by Misha Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Guys, unless the devs have moved them before the test opens this week, there are 6 butterflies in the community gardens.

Oh, and Hi! I've been off topic most of my life, so I might as well post in here.

Would anybody like to help me make a big pile of butter somewhere in the meadows when the game reopens?

I want to see if it melts.

  • I'm not sure if penguins would appreciate large piles of butter, but that video might be the cutest thing ever!

A hat tip to a fellow stumbler. Between that and Glitch, we're doomed to never get anything done!

  • @Gabi that's is soooo sweet :)

  • In order to keep some semblance of conversation going...

How are you all staying sane while waiting for the next test? I'm watching random internet stuffs and avoiding housework.
Posted 20 months ago by DiddilyPuff Subscriber! | Permalink
  • So does that mean the only off-topic response is to stay on topic here? :-p
Posted 20 months ago by Travinara Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Well, no, we can stay on topic for a while... I figure things progress like a conversation. You get sidetracked, go off on an anecdotal tangeant, wander back to the original topic, get interrupted by 'oh sweet cookies what is that thing', and just wander wherever you please.

...Darn it now I want cookies...
Posted 20 months ago by DiddilyPuff Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Travinara DiddlyPuff has it about right lol. It is something I do all the time, going off on a tangent. Thats why I started this thread. It's going to go a bit like Chinese whispers and what started off will be something totally different by the end.
If you like we can comparer notes about the size of our onions.! lol I looked at mine today and think you may have the edge lol  which leads me nicely into the topic of the moment......

In between testing I work four days a week. I love, love gardening and have a small veggie
plot at the bottom of my garden. I do sit on the laptop alot in between in the hope I see OPENNNNNNNNN
Posted 20 months ago by Misha Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @DiddilyPuff  I actually found Glitch through Stumbleupon :P  And yeah its pretty much impossible to get anything done especially this big test this week haha.
Posted 20 months ago by Gabi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I found Glitch by following Knitmeapony's twitter ramblings. Glad I decided to check it out.

Not only am I not getting anything done while the tests are going on, I'm not getting anything done any other time because I'm sitting here refreshing. (Is it up now? How about now? Now? I know it's unlikely that anything would be happening, but I'm going to check anyway, how about now? Now?...)
Posted 20 months ago by DiddilyPuff Subscriber! | Permalink
  • LOL I do it too... I love your ideas Mish, they DO remind me to enjoy the innocent side of 'play'.

We actually do a couple types of onion... We have a 'short' winter (less than 90 frozen days) in the fall I put in ones with a long cycle, so that group is actually being used in the kitchen already. My neighbors laughed at me earlier this year when I was putting the spring stuff in... helps saying 'it's too early'... but I plant when my dogs start their spring shed, somehow *they* always seem to know when spring really is.
