Topic

What's 'off-topic'? For that matter, what is 'The Topic'?

Is off-topic social?  Is it non-game-related?  Is it non-deep-discussion?  Is it just a wastebin for threads we don't want to look at?

And what is 'General'?  Is it miscellaneous?  Is it anything-other-than-groups,-ideas-and-bugs?  Is it a complaints pile, + anything as well?

Is anyone else confused about this?  Does anyone else care that 8-hour-old threads regularly drop off the front page of General?  Am I being obsessive about this?

I submitted a thread in the ideas forum.  I'm just wondering if I'm the Only One?

  • My interpretation? General is anything Glitch-y that is NOT a Bug/Idea [which are fairly self-explanatory, though I have seen people post bug reports on forums for entirely different programs...]. Off-topic is anything not directly related to Glitch.

Nope. Don't mind that they drop off the front. I just review the timestamps for latest postings and go as far back as needed.

  • Unfortunately, I don't look at anything but general forums any more. I used to look at all of them in beta, but now that the game is online all the time I spend little time in the forums and don't have time to read everything. That said (probably by me and many other people here), general forums are for topics about the game that are of general interest to alot of people. Off-topic is for non-game related things, or game-related things that are not of general interest (will only appeal to a select few). Ideas is for ideas, and bugs is for bugs... pretty straight forward on the last two, although alot of those types of posts get erroneously put into general.

  • General: Anything glitch related that isn't a direct idea to change the game.
Ideas: Anything glitch related that has a way to improve/change the game
Bugs: Anything glitch related that has something to do with the game not working right.
    Off-Topic: Anything not-glitch related.

  • Aoi - Blanky said all new ideas for groups should go in off-topic.  Though your definition explains a lot!  Like how threads about dreaming about Glitch are perfectly on topic.  Mind you, threads about functionality on other interfaces were evidently considered General.

Shepherdmoon - So should art threads and poetry or writing threads be off-topic?  Or general?  Or do we really have a case of 'post-it-in-general-and-see-if-someone-moves-it'?  If that's our situation it sounds like no one is really sure what belongs where..

Linnaea - what do you think of the examples I linked?  Are they in the wrong place or are they a defining part of General forums?

  • oh, @Aoi, I hadn't noticed you made a reply about the posts falling off the front page.  Does it irritate you at all when someone makes an identical thread to a topic that was made yesterday?  Or are you quite happy to make the same reply, again?  (And potentially again, the next day?)

Maybe this is leftover from me being a part of extremely-strict forums, whereas the Glitch forums are noticeably more lax than any other I've ever been in.

  • Speaking personally... In an open, general forum? Not at all. Part of forum life. I also don't feel compelled to respond to posts unless I feel like it, which can be day after day, or could be dependent on the way the post is made, or just once and never again. Specialized forums, like those for bug reports, I expect much greater care... but there, the front page goes back four days. If it's been that long, then it's safe to say that I'm at a point where I don't care, for some reason or other.

  • Thanks Aoi :) I probably need to give myself time to adjust a bit.
