The Problem of Street Swiping

Today I was the victim of my very first street swiping! I arrived at my street only to find my herb gardens empty (*sigh* Didn't even bother to hoe, let alone replant...) and my meat collectors/pig feeders gone. Now, I wasn't as upset about this as I might be, mostly since I expected something like this to happen at some point. That's what happens when stuff is publicly accessible. I ran the risk of my things being stolen when I put them on my street. It happens.

But I immediately started wondering, "What are some ways to keep this from happening again? How can *everyone* stop it?" Here are some of the ideas I had:

* A signpost/bulletin board displaying the names of all the people who have visited your street. Right now, there's a guarantee of anonymity. Thieves *know* there's no possible way for them to be caught. Simply having a listing would give at least a sliver of doubt.

* Having options about how much to lock what's in your yard: Public, friends only, locked. Perhaps even in public, items would be unable to be picked up except by the player who placed them?

Any other ideas?

  • Keep your stuff in your backyard.

  • I don't know how many times this has been suggested. Stoot said they weren't going to make feeders and collectors lockable. It's a public street. If you put stuff out there, do expect that it will get taken.
And it's not called thieving, because they aren't stealing anything. It's a public street. Call them "people who pick up things from streets."

  • Yeah, I think all we need is to be clear and obvious about what can be lifted and what can't, and simply understand that that is the way it is.  There are plenty of great gaming opportunities with the way things are being set up right now, and the separation of back yard and front street is the clearest and most obvious method of locking things down or making them free to pick up.

  • I would keep street plots planted on my street if when they are harvested by someone else I got something out of the deal.  Like 50% of the crop, favor points, or XP.  It's a win/win situation really, a person harvests seeds they didn't plant and gets 50% of the return and pays the land owner for what they harvested.    Sharecropper Glitches.

  • Nifty idea, but would only 50% pay back your seed cost?

  • Herbs: I understand your frustration - but replant! It's no big deal
RHK machines: I feel very strongly about this - they are (relatively) expensive and it really doesn't make sense that they can be "picked up" *cough*stolen*cough* It's not fair to the animals.

Other machines can't be picked up - including stills. What makes RKH machines different? I feel very strongly about this.

  • @Walruz, I don't honestly know...it was a suggestion of a possible payment.  It wouldn't work if the system didn't reward both the planter and the reaper.  I suggested in the ideas forum the idea of "harvest credits" if you replant another Glitch's street garden which can then be used when you harvest another plot (or the same one).  Credits could be in the form or imagination or currants, etc.  Kind of like subway tokens.

Just shooting ideas.  I have a feeling that there won't be many street garden plots if it stays in the current mode.  But heck, how many damn garden plots do we need?  lol

  • Again, what we want are lockable RHK items.
The garden thing in the front just makes no sense to me.

  • +1000 for lockable RHK items. I would love to put animals in my front yard for the benefit of all but as there are times when I can't play for several days I have to be able to put feeders out and expect them to stay there - otherwise, carnage, literally!

  • Just don't put stuff on your street that you aren't willing to lose.  Simple.

  • I'm coping with it by putting crap I don't want out on my street. The funny thing is the little hoovers don't want it either.  But they'll swipe a collector in the batterfly of an eye.

  • I put a garden in front just to see what people do with it.  And people DO do things with it.  It's one way of actually seeing whether people even come to my street or not.

  • RHK items might eventually be locked (as stills and icons are now).

In the meantime, don't leave stuff out unless you are ok with someone taking it.

Soon there will be other ways to find out who came by while you were out.

  • I think that there needs to be some kind of visual difference between private and public objects, especially since things change state depending on timers, locations, etc.  Not something too glaring like a big red outline or a big padlock over the whole thing, but maybe small icons in one corner, or a change in the cursor when you hover.  There are a number of ideas floating around that make ownership a little complicated, but the 3 basics would be useful to display: public (default), private to me (little padlock or key), private to someone else (stop sign or not allowed).  Maybe a fourth for things you can harvest/interact with, but not take or destroy (tinkertool).  This would help with the pervasive confusion over what the current rules for things are, like community gardens, objects in front streets, etc, especially as the rules are still a moving target.  The information has to be available to the Devs somehow, or the programming for the objects wouldn't work.  At the very least, can we have this data available in the object info or as it's own "ownership/protection level" menu item?

  • Well, they've locked the RHK equipment to the owner now. I like that only the owner can move it. I do *not* like that only the owner can use it -- even inside the house. How about keyholders? If I did not trust them, They'd not have keys. :(
