What is the goal of Glitch?

Hey there how is everyone?

Im just curious as to exactly what im meant to be working towards here.

I understand its sandbox in its gameplay, however so are games like the sims and runescape but you know the idea is to get your skills up so that you can do and make more things.

What is the goal(s) for glitch?

  • there is no given goal, in my opinion the goal is to explore and have fun.

  • In a way, I'd say there are no ultimate goals within the larger scale, because every goal is permitted. ;)
    ============
    But here is what Stewart Butterfield, the creator of Glitch, has to say officially:

    "We provide raw materials and a stimulating environment, but it's the players who bring the infinite world alive, shaping it with their imagination."

    [About the similarities between Flickr & Glitch]: "Chief among them is the importance of communication, and creating a space where people can build relationships. that can be more powerful than any individual feature we could offer them."

    In a nutshell: "Butterfield told us he wants to flip the model for online games by creating a gaming environment that is more about creating culture." {My opinion: "culture" can mean anything really, but the difference is that he wants the culture to arise naturally from the players, instead of the game devs.}

  • Actually, it's odd - Glitch is largely a solitary endeavor for me, open-ended play where I'm not trying to shoot anything, blow holes in anything, or screw anyone over (I can get that elsewhere, in both game and real world venues).

    Glitch is about being. And it doesn't have to be grounded in the real world, where we're constantly measuring status by what we own, or where we live, etc.

  • Hmmm interesting, I guess I'll keep playing and see where I land, maybe it will grow on me!

  • "...but you know the idea is to get your skills up so that you can do and make more things."

    Doesn't Glitch also fall in to that category?

    From what I have seen, 'goals' in Glitch are subjective and fluidic to say the least. I have friends who focus on levelling their Glitch. I have friends who focus on getting as many achievements as possible. I have friends who are working out the best possible route through the periodic table of skills. I have friends who are focusing on gathering materials to be able to participate in street projects. I have friends who do exactly the same as the former, but their materials go towards fighting off the Rook.

    I have two friends who are in a constant battle with regards to the population of Spice and Gas plants. I don't tend to talk to those two when they're in full swing.

    I'm dancing around here, but the point I'm trying to highlight is that your 'goals' will come naturally once you find a niche in the game you're happy with - regardless of its value to the wider community as a whole.

    Also, it is worth bearing in mind that Glitch is in its infancy. Further down the line, the Developers may create more linear, story-driven goals for us Glitchen to come together and work on. Goals and story-arcs that require us to have a certain level of proficiency in order to be able to achieve.

  • Glitch is about creating personal goals. Your goal may be to learn all the skills and get all the badges. Or amass wealth. Or help with street projects. Or run a no-no cartel. Or guide newbies. Or pet as many piggies as possible. Maybe you don't want any goals and just want to be free to explore. You'll get more and more ideas as you level. My advice is to pay attention to the forums and chat, you might read about something that really strikes you.

    There's actually a thread going on right now about people's personal Glitch goals. I'd look at it for more ideas: http://www.glitch.com/forum/general/9256/

  • Thanks for all your responses guys! I think something for me I need to find other people who are really into glitch to play with. Currently im just kindof stepping along and seeing where I end up but 9/10 I don't get people chatting to me.

    Thanks again,

  • Watch Global Chat (while it's still alive)! There are always people talking in there. Usually people will announce there if they're going to work on a quest with others, that's a great way to make friends.

  • The goal of glitch is to go and make the giants bigger, and we'll play for a long while.

  • Nytician - you just need more friends.

    I took initiative and added you.

    My goal in Glitch: Have fun, meeting other glitches, be social.

  • The goal of Glitch is to live in harmony with the innerGlitch, which you will discover, is within everything the Giant's have imagined.

  • Another hint - look at the groups. Find an active one where the subject interests you (mine include abetting piggy populations, injecting fun player-driven quests and encouraging entertaining teamwork). The members there will probably be like-minded and have tons of ideas for in-game objectives. Each group has an open chat session so you can keep in touch with your fellow egg fondlers, or whatever.
