Butterfly net?

I'm sorry if this has been asked already, but I couldn't find any other thread on it when I searched. I saw an item called a "butterfly net" up for auction, but I have never heard of an item like this and it isn't in the encyclopedia. Does anyone know where it came from?

  • It was invented in-game and tested by stoot on our last test session. I heard that this one came up in a trade with The Rube. Other than that, it remains a Barfield Supermystery!

  • Actually, I don't know much about it: Myles made it and I'm not even sure what it does!

(But, the damn Rube shouldn't be trading it!)

  • Here I was looking for Spongebob and jellyfish! I swear that's where I'd seen it before. ;)

  • Uh-oh. Rube is gonna get a splanking, or maybe a trip to the interrogation room. :)

  • yeah, the rube really is bad at trading!

the butterfly net lets you attract a nearby butterfly, which causes it to follow you around for a while like a lost puppy dog.  i was all set to start my own butterfly removal service for all your sad butterfly needs at only mildly extortionate prices, but sadly the butterflies won't follow into other zones.  ;)

  • If you can get it to follow you out of the basement and upstairs I will hire you.

  • Awww.
I really want a net that we can use to move butterflies.

  • Oops. That was a proof-of-concept I was working on, and not intended for production.

I've removed them all from the world.

    The Rube has been sacked.

  • Poor Rube :P

  • The Rube's erratic behavior and poor business sense are to blame. Wandering the streets aimlessly, making shameful deals, and now stealing tool prototypes?

I shudder to think of the potential disasters that could have come from that thing being in the wild. Have you seen the netting?

  • aw, no, don't blame the rube - it's not his fault, really, he goes around practically with a sign around his neck announcing to the world what an unskilled trader he is, and i really should have known better than to take advantage of the poor guy like i did.

he must have been hungry from tirelessly walking around offering up his services, because he *really* wanted one of my meat gumbos.  he tried to offer me more reasonable and respectable wares, but i wasn't having any of it!  after a few offers, he couldn't help but notice my blatant interest in this strange net i see poking out of his bag.

he started to explain how he'd found the net somewhere, and not being able to find anything about it in his official encyclopedia, he was on his way to turn it in to the bureaucrocs. but i seized my opportunity and snatched up the net, flung a bowl of gumbo into his hands and took off!

then what do i do but basically alert the media in my clumsy attempts to cash in on the black market, and broadcast to the world how the rube can't be trusted?  and the rube takes the fall?

well that's not right, so i am here today to set the record straight, and i hope the rube will be given a second chance.  :)

  • lol! Bob =)
I wish the Rube would come and see me a bit more often, only had the pleasure of trading once. I have seen him around on  a couple of occasions, but he always ignored me.... even so, I do hope he gets to stay!

  • Awww, Rube.

Is it likely the butterfly net be re-introduced? It's a great idea and, according to katlazam, worked well!

    (LOL katlazam, great story!)

  • 1) I love this thread ;)

    2) I love the idea of the Rube's ineptness becoming a plotline. Secrets, and then leaks, come with any bureaucracy, right? What if a quest started with the Rube accidentally 'leaking' some clue or item about the Rooks' minions?

  • Don't be fooled. The Rube knows what he's doing.
Pretended to make me an offer too good to be true; an engine for a focusing orb.
I tried negotiating but he was having none of it, so I agreed.
    Joke's on me.
He took the orb and I never did get the engine.
It's all a ruse, I tell'ya.  The Rube is quietly making notes on the gullible and making plans with the Rooks.

  • There's definitely a story to tell about the Rube. His family is quite the cast of characters.

  • The Rube traded me for a machine. I brought it home. Some day I will be able to work it. I do not know if he is a fool or I am. He got a sandwich.

  • Thanks Myles! and stoot for straightening out my misinformation. It is amusing to see the behind-the-scenes antics and mythos of the game from the other end of the stream. But I do hope The Rube hasn't been laid off permanently. I have a cup of water I would love to trade to him for a butterfly milker.
