How do you Glitch?

When I started testing for Glitch earlier this summer I got addicted right away. I blew through what I could, and quite frankly, neglected the whole community aspect of the game. It wasn't until I had to befriend people to send things that I started to add contacts. Even now I have only eight friends, none of whom I know except one IRL. I was only just starting to branch out into being a bit more social (doing street projects, leaving notes) when the test ended. Luckily I was able to enjoy Glitch another way. My boyfriend saw my fascination and asked if he could play on my account since he couldn't get an invite. For the last couple of weeks we've been alternating playing; I'm on early in the morning and he's on late at night. We bought a new house two days before the test ended and had lots of fun setting goals and helping each other out. Now the thought of playing Glitch without someone to share it with seems incredibly depressing, and I'm regretting waiting so long to actually start getting involved socially.

So I'm wondering, how do you Glitch? Are you content to spend your days alone, or are you a party-goer/thrower? Does it affect/enrich your gameplay?

  • I've played single-player games most of my life (with some two-player ones thrown in against siblings when I was younger, and one MMORPG) and I've found that I'm just awful at socializing with other people in games :P I think I still have the single-player mindset: I just focus on making progress, doing quests, getting what I need to etc.

  • I love every aspect and have many friends.  Most of the time I do play alone but I especially enjoy it when I can join some of my friends in doing special things such as group Quests and parties.  I have never really know how to be social so this is a learning experience that I am happily enjoying.  Thank you Tiny Speck!

  • It depends on my mood.  Usually I have one of my group chats open and we all talk for hours.  I love the Projects and spent waaay too much time/money (currants and inventory stuff) at them.  Occasionally I don't feel too social so I'll pop in to group chat and tell them then I'll go along by myself doing whatever I want to do.

  • I'd say I divide my time between noodling about solo and playing with others. I'm a hermit by nature and spend a fair bit of time mucking around alone (much to the chagrin of my irl friends that got me into Glitch and want me to buy into their communal purchase of a block of houses in Sini Shake), but that said, I really, really dig the random interactions with other glitchen in the streets, the forums are amazing, and yes, I actually got teary-eyed a few times at the amazing co-operation I saw (and was privileged to be a part of) in some of the street-building projects.

  • I tend to be rather anti-social...I know...hard to believe when I have over 200 friends and I'm playing a social MMORPG...(but I did come into the game with 100's of insta-friends since we all played another game that shut down, so there was an insta-bond with many players who I had recognized from that game after playing there over a year).

I like bumping into folks who have names I recognize (though I often practice drive by hugs vice chatting), and I have a hard time with the social quests - the games, races, multiple people required to finish quests...but I do enjoy a couple of my group chat channels because the folks there are insanely fun/funny, but they are the smaller groups - 10-30 people - I almost never do global chat or help channel because I find the folks there are bit brusque, and at times, rude for my tastes...

I enjoy the street projects, but more for the goal of trying to get in the top 5, vice the 'community' aspect.  People are so busy, that I don't find I really socialize much during the projects themselves.

I am looking forward to the community halls/streets.  One of my smaller groups was able to get one last test, and I really enjoyed spending the EOTW with my close game friends...the big EOTW parties really aren't my style.  I think that was the first time I wasn't in my house at the EOTW, but figuring I was losing it anyway due to reset it didn't bother me too much.

I do have days where I am completely antisocial, and for those when I do come online, I often just don't participate in any chats...the nice thing is my close game friends know me and understand.

I like that even though this is a social game...I can be anti-social too... :)

  • Serilyn: I have that mindset too, but the more I play Glitch I feel like it gets stale without a bit of interaction, especially when skills take so long that quests are few and far-between.

Voluptua: I reconcile myself to the duty of a silent helper in street projects. When I can't contribute I radiate my butt off 'cause I'm too awkward to ask if people need anything and stuff. && This is actually my first time in the forums. I'm quite the lurker.

  • I'm mostly a solo player. I have a few friends from other places that have joined me in Glitch, so if I socialize, generally it's with them. I'm friendly, and I like meeting new people; I'm just not going to seek such things too often. I do like going to projects and watching the others chatter and be silly, but I tend to be a quiet participant in such things. I did join a conga line once though!

  • Welcome the forums Coi Koy!! :)

In my other game, I think I lurked for about 3-6 months before posting.  Most of my close friends here are folks that I made friends with via the forums there. Here's hoping you make many life long buddies...

  • I think the thing I miss about the other games I have played is voice chat over VENT.  It helps build the friendships and makes it more real.  Any interest in having a voice server for glitch?

  • I went until about level 19 w/o really socializing. I do like to socialize but I thought it was so nice that you didn't really HAVE to socialize in the game if you don't want to. So I went out on my own. Then I discovered street projects and couldn't help but run my mouth off when I see groups of ppl. lol!!! Stay away from Eye Wonder when she has something to say....she doesn't SHUT UP!!!

It was about at level 19 too that I got my first home. I noticed in my neighborhood no one talked to each other or left gifts. Well I changed that real quick! I left a note outside my hood asking ppl to stop by my place and leave a note to let me know you live in the neighborhood. It worked out great! A new group was formed from it and every time I came home, I had gifts and notes which made the game so much fun!!!! I'm hoping to stay friends w/ some of the neighbors I met in the last test run.
I think what happens is you make friends along the way. Just because someone has a million friends doesn't mean they're not lonely. My mom always said if you have one good friend in life, you're a lucky person.
Ok I better end this now, as I said before, sometimes I have run of the mouth. zip zip.

  • I have been pretty introverted here.  I love doing my own thing.  I think that's why I kept receiving random kindness rainbows (is that paranoid?  I took my constant receiving of them as a sign from the devs that I wasn't being social enough).  I *love* bestowing it and then running off before anyone sees me.  I like the idea that it appears really random (good GRIEF did I get a ton of those rainbows, though!).  I came here with some friends, and most of my interactions have been with them (hi, jasbo and nanookie! :) ), but because they're so social, I've been meeting some really nice people (like the wonderful people who helped me get my egg collector trophy!).  I intend to participate in the groups more now that Global Chat is dead.  As I've started to meet people, it really  is nice to run across them while tooling around.

  • (hi noqualia!)

Every reset I have been through has inspired a resolution to "play more, jabber less, play smarter, yap less", and this reset has been no exception.  I have a general plan to learn everything there is to possibly know about the game this time around and become a golden platypus of knowledge, but I will probably just spend most of my time being silly.  As per usual!  :D

  • I'm one of those weirdos that plays MMOs, loves MMOs, but hardly ever joins a guild.  I solo everything for as far into the game as said game's mechanics allow, then either get into crafting or get exasperated and leave.

That said, in Glitch, I've found the urge to socialize slightly more pressing than in that of my previous gaming experiences.  And, man, has it been strange!  For a little while, I was some sort of deranged, meat-flinging shaman, leaving pork at graves and gibbering about bad juju.  I even ventured onto Global Chat a couple of times (often with disastrous, and emotionally-scarring results).

But on the whole, I tend to stay out of things.  I think it's because the moment I get too comfortable chatting, I tend to say or do something doofy and then get the urge to delete my account and disappear forever.

When the game reopens, very few of my ingrained gaming habits will change.  I'll still just quietly muck about, do the quests, talk to the rocks and trees.  *shrug*  It's the little things about Glitch that really stick to me.  I might try and participate in projects more, though.

Oh, and I'll still leave pork at graves.  It's my way of saying "Hi!", only vicariously, and with pork.

    See?  There I go again.

  • I think I'm similar to a lot of people in that I tend to balance out "antisocial time" just getting stuff done by myself, and "social time" where I'm at least present in a number of my group chats and talking with people. And I've had some great random interactions with folks on the street. This past time before reset, a lot of my play has been me trying to figure things out and determine what I like doing best.

But the other aspect of playing Glitch that has been really great for ME is playing with my little brother. I was loving Glitch from my first day in the game, and I talked about it so much that my bro got an invite off of me within 24 hours of my getting into the game. I think we're a little like Coi Koy with the boyfriend. We generally have similar play styles for games, so we'll set some goal or another, and then race each other to see who can get it done first.

I really love that Glitch is a pretty relaxed, communal game, and I don't ever feel like I'm playing "wrong" or that other people are just "better" at it than me... But that I can also have that element of competition with my bro that's still all in good fun.

  • Djabriil: It's actually not, although I sould totally say is it to sound cool. It's my way of being clever and saying I like fish. >.< Though I do like The Pixies.

Eye Wonder: That sounds great. I'll have to make sure to drop by your block once we can all afford houses again. :]

Noqualia: I'm with you on the Random Kindness. Usually I splank people then bestow them with it and run off. I like being anonymous, and tend to do drive-by gifting. I like being nice, but keeping quiet about it. I think it's great that Glitch has the option to be like that, with drops and stuff.

  • I was invited to the game by a RL friend, so I started off with one contact. Then I invited another close friend, and we bought houses together. That sparked off a little network based around Doon Way Quarter block 5100, with food everywhere and people leaving notes. I liked it a lot, even when the food all got swiped! I'd like to have something like that in the game proper. I also enjoy chatting with the UK Glitchers group and hanging out with them a bit in-game. Other groups I've joined haven't worked like that for me yet.

  • @Haiku - similarly, Glitch is a way for me to keep in touch with my friend in Vancouver :) I should actually invite my brothers to join. They are more into the WoW end of things but it's worth a try!

  • I spend a lot of time helping other people, which is awesome. I love the chance to interact with a bunch of friends I'd never met before I started on Glitch. However, I also get plenty of alone time in the game, which I need - just like in real life. I like parties, and I like doing things on my own - depends on my mood of the moment.

  • i tend to be pretty active on the forums, and started (much like other people here" very anti-social.) in the game.   It wasnt until about level 10 that i started realising that i was making life quite tough for myself.  Now i tend to say the odd hi, help out "younger players" with spare food and gifts, and do what i can to make those first 20 levels a tad easier for them.

  • I go back and forth depending on my mood and goals at the time. Sometimes I ignore all my group chat windows and just play by myself. Other times I split my attentions between chatting, interacting with people I pass by (including randomly slipping things into newbie inventories: hee-hee), and doing my own thing. Sometimes I get so wrapped up in chat or some other personal interactions (parties, helping people out with something, etc.) that I don't do anything else. Either way, I always have lots of fun :). Glitch = awesome!

  • What I love about Glitch is that the way I play it changes over time. Sometimes I just plug in to quests and learning about the world, other times it's the meditative collecting in different regions, other times exploring, other times socializing or street projects, other times growing/cooking/making.  I keep discovering new ways to play.

  • Hear hear....to all the previous posts...yes, it is great that we can play Glitch in any way that the mood suits us...
Posted 15 months ago by b3achy Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I spend a lot of my game time chatting to people while I'm playing. I can multitask... a little :)
The game part's fantastic, but for me, the game is nothing without people to play it with. I like the company just as much as I like the world.
I'm not into parties really. I used to go to them before they got too crowded, but not anymore. I'd rather talk with a smaller group of people and actually have some decent conversations rather than just talk at people in general in a party situation.

  • I'm pretty social, but I've never been a "joiner" - I don't tend to like to get involved with organized groups (IRL).  I got into Glitch because I knew Nanookie and she invited me.... I started very casually (I believe I was at least level 5 before I even realized that chat was a thing - global was a big ?? for me for a long time, and I still don't really use it).

That being said, I have made SUCH good friends in Glitch.  And I've strengthened existing friendships (Nanookie and noqualia, represent!).  Even when I've been in a bad mood, Glitch has stretched and accommodated my pissiness (I remember purchasing a house with a wood tree which I figured should be of use to SOMEBODY with the 1 2 tree 4 quest - I put the call out on Global to come "get rid of this thing" - I must have seemed like such a harridan - "Hiya level 8 person - chop, leave."  And yet, everyone dealt with me with grace and humor).

Anyway - CK - if you're looking for friends, I'm happy to friend you. You seem like my kind of Glitchen.

  • If someone were to look through what I do on Glitch every day, they may in fact be creeped out. A lot.

I very rarely pipe up, but Global is open 90% of the time.
Which means I'm just sitting there watching other people talk.
