Ballots & Voting

We just opened the first ballot ("Which Two Animals Should Get Added to Glitch Next?") So, subscribers: you can finally spend one of those votes that have been storing up (or two of them … or thirty).

We anticipate holding these kind of referendums about once a month, but that's subject to change as we see what happens.

  • I think any one of these animals has great potential!  If they're not odd or funny, they're steeped in folkloric history and symbolism.  And all of them have great potential for puns.

I look forward to see what surprises the two winners have in store for us, honestly.

  • A sloth is likely to be very beneficial to building a house or making items, for we get grain from a chicken and eggs from a tree, so there is no guarantee that either sheep or alpaca will give cloth.  Sloths could provide nails from the cuttings of their long hard toes or their coat could provide the cloth.

  • Sloth is where you get laziness, and every good couch needs a generous dose of laziness!

Honestly, I think the more unlikely the animal is for good building materials, the more creative a solution TS is going to have to come up with for it.

So those of us with a "free month" subscription can't vote, right?  *grr*  And I won't have money for a subscription until next payday.  Ahh well.

  • In retrospect, I take back my comment about not showing the results. I enjoy how it has functioned here.

Perhaps it MIGHT be interesting to not show them for a couple of days and then reveal them for the last couple of days. Might mitigate the "Well, might as well not vote for Z since it is so far behind X & Y" in early voting... while still allowing the excitement of the horse race.

Follow up reminder - Animals not implemented right now probably have a very high chance of being implemented later. Who ever ends up in third is OBVIOUSLY a popular choice. It is not like TS is gonna say, "Well, it lost, even if it was close, so we can't use it."

Also: I put 55 votes to mole, realized that was silly... and THEN sloth was added to the ballot. :)

  • Synnia, if I weren't saving up for a trip to the Czech Republic right now, I'd gift you a month's worth just to give you a vote.  I hope someone does that for you!  (yes, this is a hint to someone who wants to cast another vote somehow, so long as it's Synnia's choice!)

Lord Bacon-o's follow up reminder is why I'm not the least bit sad about my one vote for moose!

  • I've made a post in the Ideas thread.

I really think we need much better information for the next balloting issue. A one-word popularity contest is hardly a good way to imagine things into Ur.

    How about some sketches?
    Or a brief description?
Or some hint about possible mechanics?

Anything more would be an improvement. I feel like one of those people in non-democracies who are just told what symbol on the ballet to vote for: "Vote for fox! Yeah!" :-P

P.S. I hope the Glitchy sloth is really, really FAST and hard to catch. That would be awesome.

  • TomC: thanks so much for periodically posting the standings. I'm avidly following the polls on my phone from work, and the results are so close that it's hard to tell from those little green 'results' bars where things stand. (Except that, as a friend said last night, the top 3 are neck and neck...and neck.)

  • Ty so much for posting the standings too, TomC! ----I hope they'll add Alpaca, Fox and Sloth! A girl can dream, right?! And the polls are so close, I'm so anxious to see if perhaps they'll change their minds and add 3 that are winning instead of just 2! It would be perfect to have sloths, foxes and alpacas at the same time <3

  • Actually I hope for a threesome also.  We've all worked so hard at this, all three really deserve it.  Just my humble opinion. :)

  • Changing the rules at the last minute to make it 3 winners doesn't seem fair, though. People have been casting votes on the expectation that there will be only 2 winners. They may not have used as many votes or may not have voted in the same way if there was an understanding that there were going to be 3 animals chosen. I love me a fairy-tale ending, but what kind of precedent is set for future ballots and what kind of expectations will people have if the voting process is circumvented at the last minute?
Posted 9 months ago by Voluptua Sneezelips Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I used all my votes before looking at any of the results. I guess I didn't catch that the balloting would be BOTH open-results and non-editable. I think keeping it to one or the other would be more fair, and would make for less of a "vote for this and win a thing" type election...

My suggestion would be to choose either "here are the current results - you can change your vote until such date" or "votes are both final and confidential until the ballot closes."

  • The current vote result page is as lame as  lame can be.   Is there some reason why we can't just have numbers?   We're not idiots.

This is a very close race, my fellow Glitchen, and hard campaigned from all sides.

    Wow.

  • Elyd, I personally like the second option better. Here's your options, vote, and we'll reveal all in the end. Otherwise, people tend to "flock to the leaders" rather than cast their vote where the really want to. It can really change the outcome.
Posted 9 months ago by MrVolare Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Let's just have all three, or better yet, all twelve!
Posted 9 months ago by AwesomeCardinal2000 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • MrVolare, I like the idea of "flocking to the leaders" better than using your votes on something that already had no chance of winning (regardless of if results were visible or not, the Rat was never going to win so it'd actually feel like a waste of votes if I had unknowingly voted on a non-contender). Knowing the leaders means you can narrow down your choices and perhaps pick something out of the frontrunners you really want to win, even if it isn't your ideal choice.
