"Planted by..." in public gardens

Well.

We have public street drama v. 3.0 going on in General right now. There's a lot of "you did this" and "no I did not" and "my butler said" and "you can't prove it" and "I'm afraid to do anything for fear of being falsely accused and blocked." etc. etc.

How about a tagline for plots in public streets that says something like "Yellow Crumb seeds planted by So-and-So" and "Purple flowers were harvested by This-Other-Glitch"?

Clarity, transparency, accountability. Sunshine! Rainbows! Ponies!

  • I'm not sure I like this idea.  I don't think it would work very well without some accompanying features and even then I can see how it could get used for unhappy things.

  • Public Gardens are public by definition and it doesn't matter who planted or picked what.

What is needed is for people to understand that their Home Street is only "theirs" in the same way their Real Life home street is "theirs". They have some management rights but not ownership.

If this type of labelling were implemented who would it help? The vigilantes with their pitchforks, no one else

  • I hear you IrenicRhonda and I agree for the most part. But I plussed this idea because I believe that this might help some folks feel less stress while playing. The thing is, many folks still believe/adopt the idea that their street is theirs, regardless of the "reality" of that. Whether wording is changed or not (I think they should be called "So and So's Public Street") some folks will still hold an idea of "ownership". And, while this is not necessarily an ideal solution for that, if it helps ANYONE enjoy the game more, well, Yippee!

  • For the record, I'm not sure this is such a great idea myself. I put it out there to garner commentary and see if it would lay bare some of the underlying concerns.

It's also possible that having a name attached to a planting might make people MORE patient and tolerant, for example inspiring them them to leave it for the original planter to harvest. I'm not ready to assume that the "pitchfork" crowd would predominate.

My more general thoughts on the public street foofarah are outlined here.

  • @foolbunny - Yes, the way the streets are named make them sound like private property. How about "foolbunny Street" - named in honour of you - not proprietory "foolbunny's Street"?

  • I'm not sure I like this idea. I do a lot of work in the Community Gardens and I would feel really uncomfortable having my named stamped all over the place...

  • So each individual plot (15 per box) would have to remember who last interacted with it or the last couple of interactions? Sounds like a whole lotta bookkeeping for a small benefit.

@Patricia off topic, but I do agree with you. (This was suggested several times when housing first came out, but TS never engaged in those discussions.)

  • The plots already remember who planted them (hence the 1 minute locked-to-planter timer). Remembering who harvested them would probably require additional info, yes.

And I'm curious: why would you be uncomfortable having your name associated with the wonderful service of tending a community garden?

  • Pascale -- first I don't do it for the thanks or anything. It's fun for me, and I like the community service aspect. Second, having my name pop up regularly all over so many community gardens would draw a considerable amount of attention, both positive and negative. I don't comment all that often in the forums, so I haven't made a name for myself here or anywhere in Glitch, and I prefer it that way.

  • Pascale, I grew up with a couple rules that apply here:

Do at least one good  deed a day.
It doesn't count if someone sees you do it.

I would really hate to have my name associated with every thing I do as a good deed.

  • I understand why people don't wish to call attention to their good deeds. On the other hand, a public garden is just that: public.

There are all sorts of ways to do good deeds that could entirely private.

Honestly, I'm not trying to be contentious here. Just exploring the topic.

  • Pascale -- it's not so much about not wanting to call attention to my good deeds, it's that I don't want a lot of attention period. I want to be able to do my own thing and not leave sign posts behind me telling everyone what I've been up to. I guess it's a privacy thing?

I enjoy maintaining the Community Gardens as much as I am able. I sometimes meet interesting people and get to know them. I prefer that one on one contact. Having people wandering around the gardens and seeing my name all over the place would make me feel really uncomfortable.
