Friends and Keys

Minor rant, not to cause drama or anything, but because it's annoying and figured I'd mention it.

I have a veritable crapload of buddies in this game.  Most of them are non-communicative (which is totally my preference honestly) and some talk from time to time or say hello when they pass by me (which is also totally cool).  But then there's the "crazies."

There are some people that play this game, like would be found in any game of course, that are flat out annoying.  Talking constantly, typing in all capital letters with more exclamation points than are allowed by law in 4 countries and 37 states.  To head this one off too, yes I know about blocking, and I do from time to time, and yes, it works very well.

My biggest buddy pet peeves are this fun list:
- You've been my friend for almost 14 seconds, can I have a key to your house?  (Sorry, but if I don't know you in real life and know I can trust you, that's just not happening.)
- Where do you live?  How old are you?  Are you a girl?  (For these, I play with a relatively sane "don't crap where you eat" type policy.  This is a game, I'm not answering personal questions, ever.)
- My favorites, and the ones that get blocked the fastest are the ones that become abrasive when I deny them the above things.  I've been called a jerk for not telling someone how old I am.  I've been hounded with repeated attempts to get me to give out a key to my house to people after denying them and gently explaining why.  (And I don't own a bog house!)

None of these things bothers me enough to report these people and certainly none of them make me want to stop playing this game, but people do make for entertaining stories.  I hope some part of this was interesting or entertaining or something others could relate to.  Have a lovely day.

  • Howdy from one of your silent friends :)

The personal questions really bother me as well -- the age question almost always come from kids (I think they're trying to find other kids in the game...?).  Ditto the name question.

Can I have a key to your house now?

  • I am also one of your friends. Howdy! I don't give out my key to anyone I don't know or trust either. There is only one person that has a key to my house and I am watching a movie with him right now lol.

  • I can certainly understand being put off if a stranger is asking you for a key, but the questions you list above are *hardly* personal. Your age and gender? The continent or *gasp* city where you live? Most people don't find those to be personal questions. (Your exact address, place of work, sexual orientation, last time you got laid... now *those* are personal!)

Some people play this game to make friends. If that's not your thing, fine, but why consider other people  odd for making the attempt?

  • I must be fairly lucky, as I've not encountered such people in all the ones that I've added/been added by (about 80-90% of the people on my list added me first). And I have that 111 badge (though I did not realize that til today)! I generally have a fairly quiet play time. I think I've met one person that asked me those questions.

  • @Dr.MaudGonne, every time I see your avi name I hear the old Cranberries song "Yeat's Grave."  'Sad that Maud Gonne couldn't stay da da da da but she had MacBride anyways..." Love that song, and love W.B.
Sorry to hijack the thread, Nerd. I got a good laugh at the stories! Street smarts go a long way in this game I suppose :)

  • I personally think that asking for your age sex and location is out of bounds. This game does start at age 14. This game is a perfect gateway for inappropriate people to start conversations with kids. Do I need to know how old you are or what city you live in to be friends? No. That's not important. Asking a/s/l usually ends in more to me. I don't want people all riled up over this. This is just my opinion on the matter. This is my reason not to ask or share my info. Its Not to be anti social.

  • About the age and gender - that's totally up to you, and it doesn't hurt not to say anything... there's that one Chinese proverb, that basically says, "If you don't feel like it is a good idea to say what you're about to say, etc. Then it's not best to say it." (I kinda killed it, but you get the point, correct me if the source is wrong.)

  • I do see your point, DamitaJo, but anyone who lets their young teen play this game (or interact through any social network) should be monitoring their own child and the people interacting with them. I'm not going to worry about other people's children in a game intended for adults.

And no, I don't walk up to strange Glitches on the street and ask them their age or immediately ask their location... although location often comes up somewhere early on if we're having a conversation. It's cool to know you may be talking to someone on the opposite side of the earth! And that bit of info can lead (and in my experience, has lead) to further interesting topics of discussion. That kind of interaction is what keeps me coming back to the game; there are only so many chickens I can squeeze!

  • Please don't get me wrong. I'm not saying anyone is being a creeper and just randomly going up to people asking their info. I'm just sharing my personal reasons for not doing it. And I do agree that if an adult gives their child permission to play then it's on them. It's definitely not fair to have to walk on egg shells because of them.

And rook, I have no clue if the quote is right but it sounds good.

  • I have keys from 8 of my friends, though non of them have a key to my house. They all rely on me to feed their pigs! I feed every pig I see, and will pop to everyone's house everyday just to make sure they are okay!

  • I like the multinational spirit of this game and do not understand the snobbish remarks about hiding your location. I like to see other players from Poland, Hungary, England, USA and other countries. We united the world with our friendship.
As for sex question i think it is crazy feminizm in america gives everybody fright, here in Russia we do not think it is a crime to ask. one may just not answer.
One who wants to play - plays, one who wants to communicate - does it as well.
Glitch, to my mind, is also the biggest social network ever and I love it the better for it with all my heart.

  • There are reasons to not want to reveal your location besides snobbery.  Some people are extremely careful regarding the information about themselves that they give out online because they view online privacy issues to be very important. Maybe because they know how easy it could be for people to find out things about them with just a few pieces of information. Or some people have had problems with non-online stalkers, for example, and wish to keep their information private online in order to reduce further problems in this regard.

  • guess i just immerse myself too much in the world of Ur. i think of every Glitch I meet as the gender their avatar appears to be, their name is just above their head, and they are from Ur (or if they own a house then they are from a specific street in Ur.)

  • @Kalashnikov not in soviet now, perhaps a kinda democratic and stupid may be.

@diaveborn I do not think that my name without surname, sex, age and my country without precise address can help anybody except hacker find me out. :)

@woman, I think the same but your nick in this discussion looks really funny :)

  • RT: All I'm saying is that some people do worry very much about the hacking aspect and similar aspects of the internet.

  • I can see both sides of the argument. I think giving out some "personal" information can help make Glitch friends. For example, I see no harm in giving out your general location, such as country or city. I certainly wouldn't have a problem with people asking me stuff. I could always politely tell them it was inappropriate :-)
However, it would be silly to give out DOB or exact addresses. Also, many people have personal websites, such as Facebook and Twitter attached to their Glitch profiles.

  • I've only had 2 odd encounters.  One was a player who repeatedly knocked on my door until I eventually went outside to see what he wanted (we weren't buddies) and he just said he wanted to come in.  I explained I value what I'd collected and only allowed my family into my home.  He kept on with why? why? why? (I blocked...)  The only inappropriate convo I've had was either a very young male, or a very drunk adult male.  I ended the convo by telling him to not make me laugh as my back was hurting...which was infact the truth.

Other than that, touchwood - I've found everyone with the world of Glitch to be friendly and chatty.  I do tend to keep to myself for the most part though.  I think I'll be changing my name to the Lone Ranger when I am able :) I am female btw and 37 years of age lol

  • Howdy from one of your silent friends!

As far as things go, I've only given out my name to one person who'd given me their real name, and it was only a first name (which any of my friends can see on my profile) and one person has my Steam name. Two people on my profile are people that I know personally and are true life friends. I've not attached my Twitter accounts to Glitch, but I did sign up using Facebook but I don't think anyone on Glitch can find me that way (and even if you could, you'd have to be a friend of my friends to friend me).

Only 3 people have access to my house, and one is a trusted frined, the other two earned my trust.

As for the crazies, I've had someone demand me to friend them because I friended one of their friends. I get people begging me to give them currants, and some in game things, but few have ever begged me for a key, though one tried to get me to move to a bog house and I ferverently declined. I've stated my age on Global a few times when there was an age poll, and my general location, only stating the state and nothing more.

I prefer to spend time chatting with people in Glitch for a while, then if I feel comfortable, I may invite them over to my house in which they'd have to knock on my door since I'm not very willing to give out my key. It's up to them if they want to reveal personal things about their lives (which I''ve had a few) and I do welcome it since it's a good way to get things off ones chest and the like, but only if they want to, I don't ask for it, if you freely give it, then it tells me that you trust me with that information, and therefore, since I'd like to keep that trust, it stays only with me.

  • I can honestly say I've never had anyone ask me personal information nor ask for my house key, and I'm.pretty social. Just my 2 cents

  • To clarify a few things here about my post.

I've only felt the need to block 3 people since I started playing this game shortly after it went live after the original beta.  (Which represents just over 0.2% of my buddy list.)  My current buddy list is 1340 people and as I type this I have 84 buddies currently online.  By and large, the population of this game is full of excellent people that are as kind and trustworthy as you could ever really hope.

When it's not primary work hours where far fewer people are online, I commonly have enough people online to fill a party house to maximum capacity.  (And a related aside, I REALLY wish there was an easy way to "invite as many of my online friends as are allowed to this party."  Mostly because it's very tedious to do manually and near impossible to keep track of whether or not I've already asked someone and they declined.  After all, I want to throw a party, not annoy people by asking them to come to one that they are not interested in attending.)  My point being, I have an above average buddy list that likely simply exposes me to a larger cross section of the population.

  • Nerd...there's another element to this as well: you may be on more friendslists than the total # of your own friends, unless you make a point of adding back every person that adds you. So while your f'list may be huge, your reach and presence may extend even further.

I've only blocked a couple of people myself; they've generally been of the insistent "I demand a key and do not understand or accept why you won't give me one" variety.

  • ...And since I'm on my phone and can't edit, a couple more thoughts.

I've also been subjected to stress over people that demand all of my attention then get aggressive when I don't respond fast enough, or if I don't want to converse for 4 hrs straight. Also not cool. More often than not, these aren't even close friends. But if they're going to get nasty because I'm trying to talk to my cousin in-game...well, no thanks.

  • I did have an entertaining conversation with a Glitch who came up to me in-game and asked "Um, is your name Andi?" (It is.)  However, turned out that it was because she was a friend of my girlfriend (and since I use the same nickname pretty much everywhere), so we had a cheery conversation and I added her in-game :)

(Would have been creepy if there wasn't the personal connection, but she had a reasonable reason to think that there aren't too many "Ashbet"s running around, so I was glad to meet a new friend in an unexpected venue!)

Someone who was pestering me for a/s/l or wanting a key to my house would get denied pretty quickly, though :P
