Will you stay and play or say au revoir

I just read something Cap n Bob said about new gamers flooding Glitch and the whole dynamics changing. I don't know if this has been discussed before so shoot me if it has :)

Once we are gaming not testing, but gaming 24 7 do you think you will stay to play. I really don't know the answer to this one. I suppose wait and see. But I feel [selfishly] A little sad about the test becoming a game. Don't get me wrong I wish Tiny Speak all the love and well wishes in the world. I hope it becomes a massive hit. I want it to progress and keen to do my bit to help it on it's way.
But I also love the chatting in the forums arguing and fun. Also the same in game. But once it has gone global  there will be so many people playing you won't see your friends and neighbours, or enemies as easily[not so bad] They will be diluted by so many more. Help wont be there and a friends list to long to see people on easily. Just wondered if people are planing on staying after testing or are infact only here for the test it's self.

  • Misha, you'll probably find that chatting in groups will be just like chatting in the public forums.

You and your friends will be able to have discussions just like you do here, and not be overwhelmed by all the newcomers.

You may even want to add your voice to this thread in ideas, which suggests that groups be allowed to build 'lodges' or 'clubhouses' where group members can hang out in the game.

  • I've thought the same thing Mish - I think its like your children growing up, you're happy that they are but you miss the people they were.....I have liked the testing and cant shake the feeling its gonna be really crowded - I suppose we'll have to wait and see but i'll certainly give it a go.

  • Good question, Misha.  Have wondered the same thing and agree it is a 'wait and see' situation.  Maybe lots of the new people won't stay around very long, that always seems to happen, and the ones who do stay will just add to the game.

I will certainly give it a good trial, so much enjoy the testing (bugs and all!)

Do hope it is a success, though, even if it changes the dynamic of the game;  the team have put such a lot of work into it, and we have enjoyed it such a lot.

  • I don't know if this is common to all multi player games but in Faunasphere there we multiple instances of each area so overcrowding wasn't an issue and it seemed to work that you would be more likely to get into an instance that someone who was on your friends list was in. It was also nice to be able to teleport to a willing friend so you could play together. A social game like this can really benefit from this kind of accommodation.

I'm still a new player, but I'm planning on sticking around.

  • I won't have any problems keeping in touch with friends I want to, and won't cry over not running into those annoying players I want to avoid. I'll probably stick around, if only for medicinal reasons :D

  • I agree with WindBorn: I think the groups were created for exactly that purpose: to make it easy for friends or people with similar interests to stay in touch in a crowded world. When the help channel is gone, these group channels will be the place to go to ask questions and chat.

Since the devs aren't planning on having different instances of locations, I'm curious to see how the game will handle the large influx of players we're expecting. I presume the world will grow with the number of players, so people can spread out more.

  • I'll stay. I haven't made any friends anyway.

I'm here for the game, and the game should get much more interesting once it's officially open. I can't wait!

  • I'll play... it's a fun game!  I want to see which new features are added over time, too.

This reminds me: I think these forums should probably either disappear or move into a testers-only section once the game opens.  Otherwise, new players could become confused when reading old, inaccurate threads.

  • Never inaccurate Glum - but often irrelevant!

  • I'll stay long enough to check out what happens next in beta and then when the game gets out of beta.

I'll always miss the early tests - the social dynamics have changed somewhat since then (no value judgement there, just an observation) and I expect them to change even more when more people come on board.  But then, when the game is available more often, I won't be setting aside 24-48 blocks of straight-through playing, either, so I'm kinda looking forward to Glitch becoming a part-time game for me, rather than full on addict-out grinding.

It may be more difficult to make friends when the help channel goes away, so when the game re-opens again, I might try spending more time being social (especially on my home block) to see if that re-kindles some of the early alpha for me.

Oh and +1 for not having multiple instances of the game.  I like that the world is massively multi-player - lots of crowds in some areas, some, I bet, will be uncrowded.

  • I personally plan on staying. I look forward to playing rather than testing. I love the testing aspect of things, but I look forward to being able to just enjoy. As for the forums and groups, I imagine the longer learning times will start leaving folks with more down time. People might start using the forums and whatnot when the world is open. Right now, they all but grind to a halt during tests because we're busy testing.

  • They will have to drag me away kicking and screaming if they wanted me to go....lol

  • For me it's a wait and see how crowded 'crowded' is. I don't ever want to have to fight/race my way through things just to achieve some (small) success. Even though I am mostly a solitary player,I don't like being totally alone;I have a big dislike of busy crowds, esp if it means having to forever compete with others (who are quicker and better equipped than me) for everything;and buying my way to success takes the fun out of the game. I don't mind a little bit of friendly competition,I don't mind waiting my 'turn',and I definitely don't mind earning the things I want. So,I guess it is a wait and see as to what type of players arrive and stay (and how many of them). My hope is that Glitch stays the fun and friendly place it is,and that I can make this my permanent 'home'. =)

  • gonna wait and see. so far it is a long tasking game to me..it takes me forever to do a task and therefore i hardly have time to chat with friends.some of the task have even giving me headaches where i just leave the testing.so i am hoping things are better soon.

  • I don't have a choice but to stay!  Addiction is an ugly thing... but it sure is fun sometimes!  I am so glad the FSers are here and we can all play together again, and I can only see that getting better when we don't have to pull all nighters just to get to play.  Can't wait!!!

  • I'll stay. I will be a bit sad that some level of familiarity may be missing with a sudden influx of new names and faces. It's kinda part of the deal though, and this stage of development & play time has been fun while it's lasted. I'm excited to see what the full, polished version of the game will be like.

  • I'll stay. Right now it has a great small town feel- I can read posts by folks in the forums and then see them walk by me in the world and think 'small world!' which you don't get very much in MMOGs. I'm sure that will change, but it will also be fun to have new players, so I can feel a little more experienced. :)

  • It'll be dependent on there being enough stuff to do to keep me interested

  • Speaking on behalf of the "newcomers": Why is that "newcomers" == "bad". We bring a change to this game  - moving from the alpha style some of you loved to retail style milions will love. Change is good. Always.
You guys did a good job on improving this game, you should stay and enjoy the fruits of your collective effort.

  • I will be staying, but just wish that I could get my technical difficulties sorted so I can play at home when I have more free time.  Ah well, only a few more months then that might change.

  • I haven't noticed any change at all.

although something my have changed while I was asleep last night.

never heard anyone use a term
like "retail style" as a positive term
    before.

  • I did not have time to play in the last test, and won't have much (if any) for this one.  Plus I must confess I have been more than a little enamored of Minecraft lately.   I will be back, but I guess I am taking a vacation, which I think I need.   Plus I don't have enough credits to buy any of those flashy new clothes!

ETA:  I see I can purchase more credit now, awesome.  Let the incremental revenues flow!

  • I didn't get to play during the sneak test and have not had any time to play so far this test, so time constraints may determine how much I'm around in the future. ):  Though to be honest it is also partly because I have been playing Minecraft a lot lately. When Glitch wasn't open much I would always try to play during a test, but as it opens more I feel less concerned about making sure I am here. I will miss the small familiar feel of the world and the forums, but we always knew the game would grow!
