Collectors and Confusion

For the first time since I learned my RHK skills months ago, I've realized how much more convenient it is to keep animals at home, and not forget them until they're piles of meat. Or sometimes some corn seeds. I admit, I'm a terrible piggy caretaker. My problem lies here. I know of a mysterious confusion that arises with your herd if you have too many collectors. Now, does this confusion stem from the number of collectors versus animals? The number of collectors in the street in general? I've been stalking the forums, does elf sabotage them looking for onion rings or other snacks, which seems likely? I DON'T KNOW. Help a Glitch out.

ETA: And how many is too many in whichever case?!

  • One thing that causes confusion is having the collectors too close together. They need to be spaced so they are not touching each other.

  • They can touch.. they just can't be right on top of each other.

  • I have 6 piggies and two collectors. The collectors are very close to each other and far from my piggies. Both collectors fill evenly and regularly.

  • Four collectors. If I drop a fifth one, the 'Warning: too many collectors may confuse piggies' message comes up.

  • I have 5 collectors on top of each other and everything is fine. I got warning when dropping out 5th collector so they might fill slower but still fast enough to collect from them twice in day.

  • I have - 31 piggies and 7 collectors in the front yard. They're very close together, nowhere near the piggies, and working fine. After four, I get the confusion message. In my back yard, I have 23 piggies, 8 collectors, also close together and nowhere near my piggies. When I had only 20 piggies, putting the 8th collector down told me not to put anymore collectors out because I was freaking out the pigs. When I put some more pigs out, and moved the collectors, I didn't get the freaking out message, so apparently it has something to do with the ratio of piggies to collectors. I don't, however, know what the upper limit would be. I just put collectors down until I get the freaking out message and then stop. Because doing anything else seems too much like math, and that just leads to equations and excel spreadsheets and it all just ends in tears and misery.

  • You made me LOL, blitheandbonny! I also like the trial/error method because my head explodes if I have to do too much math and that REALLY causes me tears and misery! hahahaha

  • 30 pigs and 10 collectors is generally how I run my show :) They fill up overnight guaranteed. Having enough collectors to freak out the animals gives the collection a chance of failure. The collectors attempt to collect, one item from each animal, every 24 minutes. As the number of collectors increases the chance of failure increases. When collection fails it fails completely, no meat is added. When it succeeds it always succeeds fully, with 30 meat being added in my case.

The chance of failure can't be all that high though, because my collectors don't often take longer than the eight hour minimum to fill up :) Humbabella has some interesting info on his blog.

  • I have a related question that I think fits better here than under a new topic. In the last 20 or so game days, my meat collectors and butterfly milkers refuse to consistently fill. Before the problem started, I added a few new pigs and butterflies to my backyard and some new butterflies to my front yard. I'd had all the collectors stacked, but when I added a new collector and milker to the backyard, they refused to fill. Soooooo...I moved them apart. I returned  5 or 6 times over 3 game days and by the end of the third day, I still had only 10 or so in each collector/milker. I've tried various configurations of the collector/milkers, I've tried petting all my pigs, and the feeders have been consistently full and the pigs ARE eating.  At one point, I did have the backyard collectors fill, but only once. I haven't checked them since last night and none of the milkers had anything and only one of the three collectors had any meat. I haven't checked my front yard yet.

    Woes!

  • When I tried three (rather than two) collectors and four piggies (because they filled up+ over night) I found the yield was about a third down and didn't fill overnight. I'd love to see the curve for optimum balance.
