Buy order

Being able to place buy order to auctions could help the economy. To find the real price of stuff. The sweet spot between bids and offers. Economy is very important part of game and will become even more if/when vendors will fade.

Today some offers are way high even that there is alot of them. longer times can help somewhat perhaps.

Buyer will pay the auction fees, of course, so there is clear gap between bid and offer queues.

What do you think?

Edit: the example, how I imagine it working:
1) I place the bid for 4000 cherries for 5c each on auction
2) I pay all the sum + auction fee in advance (say 24000c)
3) anyone can sell any amount of cherries to auction house for immediate currants
4) auctioneer store the stuff, send a frog package when whole bid is complete
5) I can cancel the the bid anytime, receiving already stored stuff and remaining currants except the fee.

  • Now before anyone starts to say that theres scripts that can do this, well there is. Good for the scripts.

Luvi seems to be hinting that this kind of automatic buying and selling system, should be integrated directly into the auction.

  • +1 as well, posted a blog not too long ago as to why these are essential in a player-driven economy.  It helps those players that are afraid of that idea maintain the play style they have now, just substituting a buy order for the tool vendor.

  • Would the auction house buy from me if there were no buy order? Or is the insta-sell only available if someone wants my item at or above the price I want to sell at?

In other words, this is much like the current sniper script, right?

  • I dont know what plan TS have in mind for vendors, but I can imagine like the tool vendor just gave you more currants when selling something someone else is bidding. So vendor will be the auctioneer as well.

You propably need some (fixed) spot where you can sell stuff. Or you can call for the frog and give the stuff to it. Not sure whether frogs are clever enough :)

I heard cool idea from someone to involve the Butlers in this bussiness. Like it alot!

  • Even if the other person is offering less than the Tool Vendor would?

  • No reason to accept bids lesser than vendor. It would not help the economy. vendor prices, if they will stay with us, are Giants' way to regulate the economy.

Its quite bad though that they buy unbound numbers. But well, Glitch world is not RL world. Giants can have use for those piles of meat, meals and crystal.chambers... They also got limitless piles of currants, so why not buy them after all, right? :)

  • But the current scripts DO allow you to place a buy order for items at a price lower than the vendors.

Are you suggesting that TS stop allowing that?  Or is there something about that you'd like to see changed?

  • The big difference here is that players would be able to SEE the buy orders, thus know what they would be able to sell instantly.  And it's an infrastructure thing for a time without vendors, or at least a time without vendors that buy an infinite amount of almost anything.  Something they've said would happen.

So no, scripts are not the same thing.  I seriously suggest anyone that doesn't get this sign up for an Eve trial.  You might not like the game -- you probably won't like the game -- but spend five minutes perusing its economy to get an understanding of how a player-driven economy works . . . and until you do that you'll just have to accept that you do not understand such virtual economies.

The biggest difference between buy orders and scripts is in who they are working for: buy orders are a service to the sellers that do not want to put goods on the market on their own.  Auction scripts just work for the individual running the script.   Both allow things to be bought at a certain price, but only one is a functioning part of a player-driven economy.  The other is banned in most games with player-driven economies.

  • The other is banned in most games with player-driven economies.

And there, I think, is one difference between Glitch and other games.  When the API was first released, and the auction script was written by ping, stoot had this to say:

Ping's script is exactly the kind of thing we'd like people to build with the API (and what I hoped would happen with auctions).

So, you can assume that TS was unfamiliar with Eve, and other player-driven economies, and did not understand how auctions should work in such games, or you can assume that they were familiar with that sort of economy and choose another style.

I'm not saying that they haven't evolved their vision during the beta tests.  But I am saying that this is not an accidental, unintended consequence.

  • Nothing against that particular script (it does what the auction should be doing - partly), but in fact, API do not have function to buy an item. So its made by page automation. And such stuff is considered macroing or boting - and those are violation of rules of most games.

Snip from Glitch terms of service (http://www.glitch.com/terms/) :
    You agree not to:
    engage in using macros, auto-looting or robot play or any other behavior that allows you (or any character you are controlling) to automatically function or effect any action to obtain significant or unfair advantage in the game with or without your presence;

And I think, it does that, exactly.

So, I'll avoid such extension as long as it is not official. Others may not. I dont mind. Whole point of this idea is elsewhere though. As Saucelah points, buy orders do not help just me, but whole economy. Big difference.

  • I've been a proponent of buy orders for a while - if nothing else they'd be a day-to-day varying motivation.  "What's selling high that I can make?  Cool."  Back in Beta One, I wrote a whole epistle begging for them.  Stoot's reply amounted to "the structure of the game won't bear it (yet).  Wait for the new housing thing, and group halls!"  There's been the implication that some sort of player run shops will replace the auctions.

    We'll see.  Current mood: skeptical.

  • Luvi's proposed mechanic is well explained and makes perfect sense. But there is one more thing we want to try first :)

  • Thanks Stoot! :)

Player shops can be nice. Not complete replacement for central auction, but nice - you dont have to pay the auction fee :). Better if I could tell mine Buttler or whoever to buy from visitors.

Looking forward to whatever TS will bring us! :)
