This Game = Not For Kids

Took me awhile to think about it, but this game seems geared more towards adults who are kids at heart. Let's add up the factors:

- All the sexual Double Entendre's
- Booze
- Drugs
- No swear filter

It's why I love it (though we could use more drugs in game with various visual/audio effects). But let's face it, if a parent places their 9 year old on game they'll have a heart attack and if you don't believe me, then I got three words for you.

High Class Hoe.

  • Glitch's innuendos are classy though. Rather than throw in innuendos just for sexualised-sake, they're used where appropriate with subtle entertaining humour to them, something that causes a little smirk rather than a "What sick dirty perv. wrote this?!" reaction. I like them. (:

  • I'll admit that the cutesy-ness of this game does give the impression that the game would be okay for children, but I also felt that TS made it very clear that if you were under 14 then you weren't allowed here. And let's face it, most 14 year olds have been exposed to many of these jokes and innuendos in the real world already. Go visit your local high school, you'll quickly see that. If you see anyone under 14, report them to TS. Other than that, fair game. ;)

  • Fuga-just so you know I agree with you. However, I do let my almost 9yo play this game. The sexual references and drugs and booze haven't even been noticed by her yet. If she gets to those (she's only level 6 and doesn't play often) I will explain them as I see fit. She doesn't chat at all though. It is my responsibility to supervise her and mostly she plays because I am. The line between appropriate and inappropriate is something that must be taught and there are some adults that still don't get it.

Btw elf, I would like to think I am not a moron but you are free to think what you want.

  • This game is not for overbearing parents of kids :P

No, seriously. Did you guys "get" hooker and dick jokes when you were 9? I sure didn't, and I'm only 21 so it's not like I'm talking about the good old days or anything.

Kids hear this stuff all the time and it doesn't faze them. When I was 14ish my aunt called someone a "See you next tuesday" and my mom asked me if I got it. I said, yeah. What did I really get though? I thought it was sarcasm, like, she really didn't want to see that person next week and that was why it was funny. Then I thought....wait...what did she mean? So I thought, of maybe it stands for something. S-Y-N-T. What the heck could that mean? I don't know that word, and I know a lot of words. Never mind, that must not be it!

You only learn the humor or offensiveness of something after you've already heard/learned about what it is referencing. If you don't know about prostitutes, High Class Hoe will be neither offensive nor hilarious.

The rules say 14, and I get that. I really do. There's the whole issue of having real-time unfiltered chat that basically says you've gotta put on an age limit. You don't want kids seeing what happens in Global! But just generally speaking, nothing in this game would damage even a 5 year old. Cause they wouldn't get it. It's the other players I would worry about with kids, not the game itself.

  • I think a big factor in not having kids play is that it makes the game more pleasant for the adults who are the target demographic. Disregarding the unfiltered chat and mature humour, I still wouldn't want the game overrun by snarky tweens and Xbox Live kids, purely for the sake of my own playing experience.

  • Good parents know what their kids can and can't handle. WoW is rated T for Teen but plenty of responsible parents let their kids play, with invites and such turned off and no chatting. Only morons don't pay attention to what their kids play or don't stay involved with their gaming. Holly is obviously not a moron!

I personally love that this is a cutesy game for adults, because it makes for the occasionally fun naughty time where the players are mature enough not to be spamming obscenities and a/s/l? in Global.
Posted 51 days ago by ZenMonkey Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Thank you Fuga and ZenMonkey. I also agree that a/s/l and obscenity spamming are NOT for this game. As an aside, my 12 (almost 13yo) gets mad at me every time I tell him he cannot play M rated games like Call of Duty. I'm a very EVIL parent. Honestly, I don't think he'll EVER be ready for those kind of games.

  • Am I the only adult that misses a lot of the less obvious innuendo until someone else comments upon it?
Posted 51 days ago by Kerowyn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I agree with others here who have argued that a lot of innuendo goes over kids' heads.  And, I mean, if they get it, then they've already got it.  (And I, apparently, don't get it.  I just googled "see you next tuesday".)

But I think another reason why this game isn't for kids (beyond the fact that the ToS says it isn't, which is obviously enough to end any argument otherwise) is because it's an MMO.  I know, I know - kids these days have access to a lot of technology and social networking and general exposure to the internet, and I'm sure plenty play other MMOs - but I think it might be easy to forget that even though we're a relatively mature and friendly community, kids shouldn't really be encouraged to interact with complete strangers on the internet.  Sure, it's going to happen, but it's really not ideal.  And I don't think Glitch has ways to turn off that interaction.

@ ZenMonkey - totally for sure!  I definitely don't want to make generalizations about any parents here, because different things are right for different kids.

  • No, Kerowyn, I'm sure you aren't. I get some of the innuendos, but as I'm not a native English speaker, I'm sure there are quite a few I've missed.

  • Janitch, that isnt the point.  I dont want to ever be held responsible for what I say in this game. Its for 14+, no exceptions.  If someone's child is on here and I say something tacky because Im blowing off steam and relaxing....it isnt my fault their kid overheard.

I have my own children, I do not want to be babysitting other peoples kids....  On top of that, if this game was to ever be geared for children, there would need to be moderation, etc.  Giltch would have to be operating under an entirely different set of rules.

  • People who actually work for Tiny Speck may feel free to correct me, but I suspect the 14-year-old minimum in the TOS is because of a well-intentioned but poorly executed USA law (COPPA), not because the game is actually inappropriate for younger people in the eyes of its creators.

I don't have children myself, but I've watched a few of them grow up, and if I did have a child who was old enough to interact with the game, I wouldn't have a problem with them playing it.  As several other people have said, if they're not old enough to laugh at the off-color jokes, the off-color jokes are going to go right over their heads.  Global chat sometimes gets a little shouty but I haven't seen anything even remotely as bad as the crap people throw at each other on Xbox Live (and I know 10-year-olds who have totally unsupervised access to Xbox Live, and it doesn't seem to have done them any harm).

And maybe I'll change my tune on this if and when I have children of my own, but I'm much more worried about their interaction with (entirely hypothetical in my case, thank God) creepy uncle Ed than with complete strangers on the Internet.

  • I personally do not like the idea of young children in the game and I agree with the TOS here. It has to do with their playing styles as opposed to just protecting them from in game innuendo or cuss words or adult chat. I had a couple of unpleasant experiences here that had to reported. There are plenty of games like glitch made especially for children, they can go play those games.

  • zwol, speaking as a mom of a 16 yr old girl and 18 yr old boy........there will be times you will definitely worry about the internet well over creepy uncle Ed. There are some serious sickos out there!!!  I had a terrible pedo experience with my daughter in another game...

Not pretty. I learned something important, as did my daughter.

  • Like a few others have said I want his game to stay child free. To protect my game experience not the kids.

Also, I rather question the morality of a mother who breaks a site's rules because they are supervising the child. To take this a little too far would you say it all right for a child to mug someone as long as you supervised and made sure your child came to no harm? Sorry, but you should be teaching your child to follow rules not condone and even encourage them to break them

  • great thread.
point 1: when I first started playing waaaay back I had someone IM me with some very unpleasant requests. They were flagged and no longer play. I don't want that to happen to kids. There is no way in Glitch presently to control who contacts you. Anyone can IM and suggest things that are highly unsuitable for under 14's.
point 2: I dislike those who want want want and cant be bothered to play. There is a fine example of someone classed as "young" in some forum posts who has been begging for stuff and has not listened or replied to any well meaning support. This sort of thing is usually but not limited to children who want everything now and will not put in the effort to understand the game. This game is not made for them because you can’t just beg your way in to getting everything.
point 3: There are some great very clever kids out there who would enjoy the game but I agree entirely with TS's terms, that anyone under 17 needs parental consent and or supervision. It’s not so much the game content, its the interactivity with other players.
Finally: I don't want to be constantly harassed by anyone. I know how to handle that, does your kid? if you're not there to watch them play? It still does happen, it only takes one nutter to sign up and decide to make someone’s game uncomfortable to play.
Still, for the content itself its amazing. If you could block global and IM chat and remove interactivity for a child’s sake so they cannot be incidentally affected I think it would be an entirely suitable game for kids, innuendo or not. See Sam & Max for example.

  • There are TOS for a reason, I think its silly that an adult with kids feels as if they are above the rules just because they monitor the kid. Rules are rules, they are there for a reason. Be it to keep kids off it for an adult audience, or to keep kids safe. Either way it irks me that there are users who openly admit letting people under 14 play yet think they can get away with that.

Nothing against any of them, but seriously. They wouldnt write a rule just for fun. And being as this is one of the few mmos that is enjoyable for a older demographic and not full of sex riddled minds I hope that people who play and enjoy it would understand. And not promote it just because they are your children.

But I guess everyone has different ideas on that.

  • Interesting topic.

While it's true that most innuendo flies over kids' heads, parents should remember that kids have a tendency to repeat stuff despite not understanding it. I know I did. Six years old and I went around repeating a joke about being a nudist, which was very witty in context, but super weird out of it. Especially since I had no idea what a nudist was, I just thought it sounded funny.

So, um, er, talk to your kids :P

Also, keep them out of chat. I like that we have the full spectrum of conversation, from weighty and serious through cute and innocent all the way to pervy and disgusting.  I don't ever want to hear someone say 'Um, this is a family friendly game, please don't cuss or talk about dongs.'

  • Almost 20 years ago (Zille, when did I get so old?) I used to play text-based MUDs on the internet, and every once in a while we'd get a kid in "gossip" (like Global) who would say "Please don't swear, my mom won't let me play if she sees swearing." (This was before COPPA, anyway.)

And we'd basically tell them that if they thought their parents wouldn't like them playing because of what they were seeing, then they probably shouldn't play. Some places are adult spaces, and I say that as a mother of a 17 year old. If I log into a game that is for 14+, that's what I expect to encounter.

(Heck, there's a few teenagers in this game who annoy me, but at least I can tell myself that they are following the rules and are allowed to play here.)

Glitch: It's not just for perverts (but mostly it is.) ;)

  • Personally, I think that encouraging children to be in a place where they do not belong and are not welcome, and where they have promised they won't be (you have to agree to the TOS before you can create an account here) sends them the message that it's okay to enter into an agreement in bad faith if it amuses them to do so.  Also, some of the things which attracted me to this game, like its particular sense of humor and irreverent tone, are things which are often lost on young children.  Given the plethora of free, challenging, educational, and fun online games which are actually meant for kids to play, I find Glitch an odd choice.
Posted 50 days ago by glum pudding Subscriber! | Permalink
  • +1 Glum Pudding. I agree, allowing your kids to play is breaking the TOS and sending them the message that it's okay to do so. Even if you just clicked through the TOS agree button for them when creating the alt account, it's still breaking the rules and still possible your child will find out. Kids talk at school and if one kid is telling his/her friends about this game, then you can bet another child will mention that their parents don't let them play Glitch because the TOS says you have to be over 14.

Where does the line get drawn? If parents are allowing their kids to play here despite the rule, then what's going to stop kids from thinking it's okay to break TOS rules and sign up on other sites with age regulations. Of course, you can monitor what your kid is signing up for in your own home, but that isn't the only place they can access the internet. There are computers in public libraries, schools, friend's homes, etc.

Plus, I'm sorry, but if I'm talking to someone in game, I don't want to be wondering if they're a child, particularly if I'm inviting them into my Glitch home, or giving them things. It's one thing to say your child doesn't use global, but there are still plenty of other ways you can socialize (and are sometimes even required too for quests) in the game. What about the new "hi" feature, where you can say "hi" to someone just by pushing "h" or "5". Are parents letting their underage kids use this feature? What if someone else says hi to them first, then tries to start a conversation in local chat? Do parents just tell the child to ignore that conversation? Telling a child they can play, but not talk to anyone isn't teaching them the true spirit of Glitch, which is a collaborative effort in many ways. Better to wait until they are older to play so they can appreciate the cooperative and social aspect of Glitch.

There a plenty of age appropriate games kids could play for now, and that parents could play with them if they like to use video games as a means of socializing/spending quality time with their children. Breaking the TOS rules so your child can play Glitch with you, rather than seeking out a game more suited to their age, that you can play with them, is just selfish.
