Please spare some of the spice trees, especially in the swamps

Now that all the spice trees in Groddle Forest are gone, the only place that grows spice plants are Ix, 'Shimla', Chakra, and Jethimadh...Shimla doesn't seem to have any tree patches, so that doesn't really count. Chakra is predominately dark patches for egg plants (14 streets of eggs to 10 streets for regular trees), so yet another less than optimal tree location - let the regular trees remain gas/bean if people want that there.  So, please, can we have a few spice trees back in Jethimadh?  I know people wanted more gas plants this past game, and I understand that, but the spices are critical for all the cooking skills and even for one of the blocks in blockmaking. At one point we were down to only 15 spice trees in Ix for the entire game world.  We're currently down to 7 spice trees in Ix, and only 5 survived in Jethimadh after planting 7 in the swamps today...so that means only 12 spice trees total in game.

There are now more than enough gas plants in the world (currently 76 world wide)...and there isn't that much use for gas that I've seen.  Needed for 1 block recipe, and I think one egg recipe...is there something else I'm missing?  But still compare that to all the recipes for cooking and drink making...I guess people would rather not eat...which is going to make for some really short game days...

Just please can we have a bit of balance?!  Especially with really only two primary areas that can sustain Spice plants.   Thanks!

  • It doesn't work that way, sweetbean; we can't plant spice trees in the Forest anymore. Any that were there were from before that change.

  • Also, remember to pet and water, everyone, especially in the less-visited areas.  If everyone just does run-by harvesting, it takes out the trees pretty quickly.  I keep seeing tons of poor little struggling trees in the swamps.

  • Yes, Millie...just fruit and beans now in the Forest...hope they redo some of the the pictures of the streets since so many show spice plants...it will be confusing to those that don't know...I still forget to read the description sometimes and expect to see the trees that are in the picture.

  • GAH.  I used to do a forest run to stock up on fruit and spice.  Beans?  Sorry - not so useful (at least not now - I know the game is always subject to change).

    MORE SPICE.

  • Totally agree with you, b3achy - I about just gave up playing, today. Every time I'd try to go collect up allspice, they'd been replaced with gas plants! Very frustrating to say the least.

How about a few spots where only spice plants can be planted and the same for fruit trees, they're constantly be turned into bean trees, tho this test it was the spice trees being damned near nuked.

  • I had a spice tree in my backyard in Groddle Meadow, and it died... it was treated exactly the same as the other four trees, who are thriving. I figured it was because the devs were wiping them out, but that was one of the reasons I bought that house, and I'm really bummed now that it's gone.

I wound up giving out hundreds of Allspice at a build recently... it's getting crazy scarce. Please reconsider!

  • Your spice tree in your backyard died? I had a house in Marrakesh Meadow up 'til the last hour of this test and it was hunky-dory, even got some allspice from the old gal before I left. Are the developers really wiping out the spice trees in people's backyards?

  • trees can die of old age, and a bit more biodiversity in the forest/meadow would be lovely!

  • At one point the only spice trees in Ix were on the East Spice and West Spice streets.  Would love for at least these two streets to be locked down to only sustaining spice plants. That's the 15 trees that were earlier in the game. It's rough, especially since you get limited harvests per game day, but tolerable.  Now those streets also have more gas plants than spice.

I have to agree...it would be nice if there were one or two streets in each region that has only one type of tree (a fruit only street in Groddle, a Gas only street in the swamps, a Spice only street in Ix, a Bubble only street in the Alakol/Bortola region, a Bean only street probably in Groddle, etc).  That way, when people get to be the way they are in game - either trying to go after a poisoning/death badge, or a planting badge, there would always be a street or two that the rest of the players could depend on to have what they need when someone changes all the plants to beans and gas...just for the humor affect...sigh...

  • Odd. I just bumped into spice trees in the forest. In fact I harvested them. (I almost always pet and water unless I'm super low on energy or in hurry to get somewhere). I'm one of those that @Lilith gave spice too. That was only because I had been deep into street projects and had run myself out without any real chance to harvest. I even mentioned at the time that it had been quite a while since I had run out of spice (or beans, or fruit), since I tend to care for and harvest every tree given a chance.

  • The spice trees in the Forest were gone as of a couple hours before test end - and yes, I harvested there either yesterday or earlier today.  I was needing a spice reload, and I typically hit the forest first and then head over to Ix...they were gone...check the location plug in...gone gone gone...

And katlazam...call out the team... ;)  Good to know on the fertilidust!!  Wish I had known, since someone came behind me and poisoned some of the trees I had just planted...ran to the next street to get antidote, and they were dead by the time I got back.

  • In the past (when there were lots of spice trees in Groddle Forest), I'd go around killing all the trees in Jethimadh to collect loam and earth. Jethimadh is particularly a great place for this because you can go around while gathering barnacles and peat as well (both abundant in Jethimadh). Now that we have dirt piles (which generate more loam than patches) and no spice trees in Groddle Forest, I've started feeling guilty about killing any trees at all in Jethimadh.

Anyway, I think we should organize a bit.

It'd be good if we could declare various areas as "zones" for specific trees. For example, we all need fruit trees and many of us need bean trees (for chili, awesome stews, etc). There's a fairly large demand for allspice and a slightly less demand for vapour. Would it be useful to organize a bit around our needs?

    For example:

    Groddle Forest mostly for fruit.
    Groddle Meadow mostly for beans.
    Jethimadh for spice trees.
Chakra Phool for vapour trees. (There's enough patches, trust me.)
Ix for both spice and vapour trees.
Groddle Heights, a mix of fruit, beans, and bubbles.
    Alakol mostly for bubbles.

If we agree overall on what should be where, we can replant as needed, keeping other trees around for other people. In other words, Groddle Meadow wouldn't have *only* bean trees, just *mostly* bean trees, with a few fruit trees as well.

Make sense? Or am I crazy?

  • :)

Last night I typed up a response to this that was fairly close to Elian's suggestion.  Then I stepped outside into the lovely evening rain and decided I needed to think more about it and deleted the response.

I don't think an entire area of just one tree is a good idea.  Too easy to grief.

I'm also OK with the removal of spice trees from the forest but noting the following concerns:

    1. The bogs.

There are few patches on bog streets relative to other areas and the platforms can be more difficult to manage.  That makes going out there to get things take a lot longer.  Maybe not so bad in itself, but!  Most players out there go there to get fireflies, barnacles, jellies & peat.  Since they are usually in a rush to get back to the project they are working, they don't stop to pet/water the trees.  There is also a lot less foot traffic out there (and few new players, with no start streets out there), with the result that trees do not last long out there.  They die of neglect.  Since moving there this test, I have to come reply on fertlidust more than I ever had in a year of playing just to keep the two trees on my street alive,  Most trees I find are in a state of decay or dead.  There are many patches out there, so those with the patch quests go out there to tend their patch.  Some may also plant, which means that on a street with 3 patches (if you're so lucky to find one with that many), you might have two empty holes and a seedling.  Or Three dead trees.  Either way, you're not going to get a lot of yield out of that street.

That's why it bugs me that the bogs are the primary area for spice trees now.  Maybe the devs are trying to encourage traffic into the bogs by making them the primary spice and only herb areas, but it isn't affecting the health of the trees - it is a place where trees die.

    2. Auctions and projects

So, recently, we have projects that ask for bulk cherries, spice, gas, etc and the products that are derived from them.  I thought this was clever and cool at first.

Before those projects, few people put spice, cherries, etc. up in bulk on auction.  I know, because I was one of the few that did.  They always got snapped up quickly (I priced reasonably).   Then, when these projects hit, people started auctioning these things in bulk at ridiculous prices.  10-15 currants a cherry (worth 1 currant)?  I'm not even sure if these auctions sold, but I was miffed when undercutting them meant that they got snatched up and resold at the higher price.

Also, people started assuming the auction sniper was only used by people trying to manipulate the market, so they would test to see what price cherries were being sniped at and then price right above that.... which foiled my attempt to bring cherry prices down.

All this to say that people are hoarding these tree items in bulk with the though that they can make mint on them, which in turn ties the resource up.  I believe that over the weekend, there was enough spice on auction to satisfy those wanting a lot of it, but that it was unreasonably priced, especially for those at lower levels who have not amassed enough currants to throw them away on price gouged items.

I don't know that we need spice brought back to the forest, but here's an idea.  Talk to your neighbors.  Ask them to replant spice trees in your yards. On one Marrakesh block, that could be something like 8 homes x 4 trees per yard, which is 32 trees.  Go from house to house collecting the spice.  Use what you need and put the rest up on auction at a reasonable markup.  Win.
Posted 18 months ago by zeeberk Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Also, to add, that I think hoarding is not good for the game.  All the homes I've to with crap scattered all over the floor means that this resource is tied up, waiting for the opportunity for the holder to profit from donating to street projects or selling).  Or maybe just hoarding.  Players will hoard, no doubt about it, but it does make it difficult for the specialization of skills and comparative advantage or the free market to work well when supply is so tied up. ;-)
Posted 18 months ago by zeeberk Subscriber! | Permalink
  • this thread wasn't really about hoarding, it was about the frustration- we can't cook without spice! during the rook attack, some people conveniently poisoned the remaining spice trees in the forest, the grandfathered ones. it was like shooting people on the 4th of july- you can't tell what's a shot and what's fireworks! (only i could, because it said i needed antidote, not reviving. very icky!)

how can we keep up energy without cooking? therefore, we need spice! QED.
Posted 18 months ago by greenkozi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yea, I got a little tangential, but it is all related.

Taking spice out of the forest in favor of the swamps isn't going to work out very well because if the bogs themselves (too few patches, too much travel involved between patches, trees die off to quickly there).  But people still could collude to have blocks of spice (in their backyards) and could also replace many of the trees in Ix with spice to make up for the loss of the forest spice trees.

That the forest spice trees were poisoned off was sad, but inevitable, really, given that spice doesn't grow there anymore.  Should it grow there?  Sure if it were brought back, I'd be happy, but if it isn't, it is an opportunity for people to be more judicious in what they plant in their backyards. ;-)

I have to ask, you see, because a few tests ago YOU killed several streets worth of trees in Groddle Forest including many grandfathered spice trees. It was right after the change was made so that spice trees couldn't be planted anymore in GF. You didn't seem to feel guilty or remorseful about that at all at the time.

  • @Mindy:

Up until very recently, I didn't feel at all bad about killing all the trees in Jethimadh.

When I killed the trees in Groddle Forest, there were dozens of spice trees thereand I had no idea that they wouldn't be allowed in the future (much less *right then*). It wasn't until afterwards that anyone told me. But that's really not the point now... they would've been killed off eventually anyway and they wouldn't have grown back, per the change in rules. I may have sped that process up on four streets, but that didn't kill them all, region-wide. Tiny Speck did that. ;)

  • B3achy:  Vapour/gas is also needed for the ever-popular Flaming Humbaba, but that's the only frequently-used thing I can think of off-hand that you left out.

I agree that allspice is very important to a huge number of foods and drinks and is therefor essential to anyone who cooks (or eats.)  I go through it far, far faster than vapour, but then I also run through bubbles like they are going out of style.  (I make a lot of Fortifying Gruel and Ix-Style Braised Meat for myself and for my boyfriend, in addition to Bubble Tea and Gurly Drinks for myself and Earthshakers and Flaming Humbabas for him.  I'm kind of a bubble addict.  I go on a harvesting trip through Ix for allspice and the bubble-heavy areas every game day, almost without fail.)

I would love to see some kind of virtual ecosystem balance wherein the world can only support a certain number of spice, gas, and other trees in a workable proportion.  I don't have any grand suggestions as to how that sort of thing would work...just popped into my head.
Posted 18 months ago by Clara Net Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yes, agree that it's sad the the spice plants got relegated to the forgotten plants of the swamp areas, but that was a dev decision...  We're at the point of it is what it is...

Ah, yes, the flaming humbabas need gas...forgot those, and yes projects need it, but they also need lots and lots of food that require allspice/spices.

The regional designations would be interesting, but I don't know if that would be promulgated throughout the game. Frankly, I always thought Ix was sort of sacred area for the spice plants, but alas, many of them are gone from there now too...though I have a few spice beans left that will be planted there next test.

I get the idea of planting in your own yards (if you don't live in the swamps and can plant them), but alas, I'm not a fan of people traipsing through my house when I'm not there, and I'm not a fan of staying around for my neighbors to have the opportunity to harvest my spice plant...and yes, shame on me, I don't know or trust all my neighbors.  But if this can work for some folks, that is great...

Yes, it is curious that there were some in Kajuu but then they couldn't be replanted once killed.  Maybe the devs need to add Kajuu to the list of locations for spice plants?  Then I'd say, heck with the marshes...plant a bunch there as well as Ix.

This thread was more just to point out there is going to be a lack of allspice at the opening of the next test, and hopefully we can get some more trees planted where they can be planted.  Right now, outside of Ix, it's Jethimadh or Chakra, but I figure the gas battle is too much so I strategically chose just one of the two swamps to target, and ask those that are killing them to let them be for at least a little while to live in some sort of harmony with all the gas plants.
Posted 18 months ago by b3achy Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I wanna confess: I'm one who puts in gas plants when I can (but never, never in East Spice and West Spice). I cook a lot, too (I have had MC2 for a long time), but I tend to need way, way, way more gas than spice because a) many higher-level items require it: seasoned eggs and seasoned beans in particular, and trying to season 2,003 eggs and beans for those badges is nigh impossible without a boatload of gas (notice that one gas you need a lot is white gas, which is 8 vapours to make 1, whereas the highest level spice needs about 5 to make and there are 16 spices so less of the SAME kind of spice tends to be needed to make certain items), and b) until Jethimadh had it, Ix was the only decent place for gas...and still seems like it because of the whole neglect/unused area/barnacle-jellisac-firefly aspects mentioned by zeeberk. A couple of us have, yes, tried to replant Jethimadh with gas plants more than once but they just don't last out there quite often. I always, always leave West Spice and East Spice alone for spice (and there are loads of them in there; was there about one hour before end of test; those two roads are still all spice except for maybe one tree), but we've been putting gas plants into Ix on purpose, yes. Because it gets killed and is dang hard to find anywhere else. But there's spice in Ix, Jethimadh, some places in Kajuu, a couple surviving in Forest...(not many though, Sapslow Tweeds was only street with more than one). However, I notice you gave specific numbers (wow, b3achy, you are a stats nut! lol) so I guess there are more gas at present. Hmm. I promise not to kill any spice (actually, I almost never take out a spice plant; I just plant empties up with gas in Jeth...or remove bubbles from Ix for gas...bubbles are abundant: Alakol, Bortola, Kajuu, Groddle Heights).

One thing I want to add because I think you mentioned it, so please come support in idea thread, I am going to petition for spice to be put back in the Forest at live, or sooner if possible. Partly because of the reasons you give (it is too sparse, especially early on) but mainly because...it was absolutely gorgeous in the Forest. It looked beautiful in that backdrop. I can't believe they disallowed it in there; it was absolutely one of the prettiest things in the Forest. And it would definitely help new players get spice since the Forest is one of the main areas newbies come to. And then we would have three areas that allow spice, which would make a lot more sense. I like Elian's idea about areas for various trees, but my thought is that each area needs about three staple kinds of tree allowed, and right now, it's seriously messed up balance-wise, or we wouldn't even be talking about this :) Of course, eggplants are a bit different as they tend to pop up wherever there are caves and dark bits; and paper trees have special spots and we can't plant or kill those anyway.

So i'm off to idea thread about the spice in the Forest, and here's my suggestion on the basic tree types per area, based on what it is now with possible tweaks (going to include this in the idea I post). I went over this carefully to get it so that no area is exactly the same three types and so that each type has FOUR areas to grow in, for now. Right now we have too many places with bubbles and not enough with spice and gas, for example. Also, wood is so short-lived that I think it'd be all right to have it in more than four places. This suggestion would make sure of some equality but lots of diversity:
Alakol: bean, bubble, wood [eggplants in caves, as is]
    Bortola: bubble, fruit, wood
Chakra Phool: It's mainly eggplant right now. In fact, I don't think gas or spice actually grow here (as mentioned). I pretty much only see eggplants? It's such a dark area, eggplants make sense. Could always add wood as again, it is just too short-lived not to have "extra" spots.
Groddle Forest: fruit, spice, wood [eggplants in underground spots, as is]
    Groddle Heights: bean, bubble, fruit
    Groddle Meadow: bean, fruit, wood
Ix: gas, spice only since the area is small anyway; doesn't seem like it needs three types
    Jethimadh: gas, spice, wood
Kajuu: bubble, gas, spice [eggplants in underground, as is]
    Shimla Mirch: bean, gas, spice

Tell me if my math is wrong, but that would put no bean at less than four growth areas and no area with the exact same tree mix. Okay, off to the idea thread. :)

  • RM, the location checker really helps to figure it out...I was on the spice roads about an hour or two before close, and hit all 15 or so trees there...so I fell out when I started writing this post right at game end and noted via the location checker that there were now only 2 on each street...so 9 spice trees died on those roads in the last few hours of the game.

Frankly, normally I don't care what trees are where...I just go to where they are and do my gathering and watering and petting...but this time, it almost feels like someone is intentionally trying to wipe out the spice plants - especially since someone came behind me and poisoned a couple that I had just planted (they needed antidote, it wasn't from neglect).  I get that people don't realize they are getting ready to kill a wood tree (even though it says harvest and clear)...so the lack of wood trees in the game, while an issue, is not that big of deal yet because right now we only need wood for a couple recipes and projects.  It will be a bigger deal if/when we get to build things.

Anyway, hope your ideas thread works...
Posted 18 months ago by b3achy Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Right, right re: the wood. The main reason we need it is for two quests (a pet all seedlings one maybe) and the one about harvesting one of each type of tree in a game day. That one is very difficult now because finding a live wood tree is so hard. Since they come and go so fast, really, they could pretty much be allowed everywhere:). I am not 100% sure the location checker has the trees right (I think it's a hair buggy), kinda like the opening shot when you join a new street is still off. Anyway, yeah, I'd like to see a better mix. We'll see if it works:)

  • @b3achy:

Wow... I hadn't noticed that all those spice trees were gone in Ix. I went through a couple hours before the game closed and gathered. I'm shocked – SHOCKED – that someone would go and kill them all.

    @Rascalmom:

I kind of like the idea of multiple trees in an area, but your plan only works if the devs change what trees can be planted where. And, specifically, allow spice trees to be planted in other regions. If they don't... I think we should focus regions with one kind of tree, with a secondary (and sometime tertiary) tree in the region, but a minor amount of them. (The tertiary tree would be wood trees, if we can keep them alive.) Without some sort of plan and action by enough of us, there's no way we'll ever get enough spice, vapour, or beans.

  • Yeah I don't understand the anti-spice thing that's happening. There were 8 gas plants in Flipside a couple of hours before the end of the test so I put in a spice tree right near the signpost so that it would be easy for spice hunters to find and an hour later it was replaced with a gas plant. What the heck?
