Ballots & Voting

We just opened the first ballot ("Which Two Animals Should Get Added to Glitch Next?") So, subscribers: you can finally spend one of those votes that have been storing up (or two of them … or thirty).

We anticipate holding these kind of referendums about once a month, but that's subject to change as we see what happens.

  • stoot, we used that system in an online community that was like The Well*.  We were a for-real not for profit, and all our voting was done by keeping results hidden but letting you change your mind up until the voting ended, either for candidates or for issues.  It meant that we could leave the voting open for 10 days, and people could still react to new information about the person or the issue.

*The person who wrote Picospan set up a local community in Ann Arbor using the same software, before he sold it.  We retained our license and he was active in tweaking the code for us. I still have my email account at cyberspace.org

  • Keeping the results hidden but allowing people to change their votes, gives people the convenience of voting early while retaining the option of reacting to new information.

Showing the results while the voting is going on and also allowing people to change their votes, creates the option for preference voting in a way that I think may meet the Condorcet criterion.

  • Honestly, changing votes while in process?
    Seeing results while in process?
Reordering the list while in process?

What's the difference when you really have no idea what you're actually voting for?

PLEASE next time give us something more than one word to go on.

  • When we (Canada) vote in a provincial or federal election we have no idea until the closing of the voting process who the leaders are. We can't return to the polling stations and change our votes. I find this makes the elections so much more exciting.....will my vote count? will my choice make it in? Just my views on the system.

  • I like the idea of ranked voting, though by allowing us to cast more than one vote for a given choice, we basically were allowing ourself to "rank" the options if we so desired.  I would have loved to have seen a mock-up of the animals we had to choose from - frankly, just the idea of a huge antlered moose done in Glitch style made me cast an appalling number of votes in that direction.

  • i came to this thread to say that i thought that voting results should be hidden until voting is done, and was glad to see that the idea was already being discussed.

i think that the visibility of the votes influenced the results, and would wager that monkey would have had a much stronger showing if it didn't appear to be out of the race by the end of the first day.

ranked choice is an interesting idea, and also agree that a proof of concept with the art would have helped our choice feel meaningful.

  • Actually kind of intrigued how they will implement the sloths.

I personally would hope the sloths indeed move around in the various kind of trees on Ur. But from a developer's perspective, I imagine this could be a hell lot of work: How do you make one of those animals use branches, and at the same time be accessible by players? Do you have to add new branches?

Of course, it would be also a great opportunity to introduce new areas at the same time: Jungle! Jungle! Jungle!

  • I like having the results visible - which, undoubtedly means that will change, lol. I'm not wild about the idea of allowing people to change their votes, but am open and may change my mind if there are persuasive arguments for it. I am totally and completely against the idea of allowing people to withdraw their votes completely once they have been cast, especially if the results are visible. If that were implemented, players could too easily manipulate the outcome of any given election and still manage to keep their votes.

  • The downside of being able to change your votes is that the whole thing becomes irrelevant until the very last second.

However the really cool thing about it is that you'd be able to track the effect of various campaigns... it becomes like a real-world election where you'd monitor the polls throughout the campaign.

Another alternative is some form of preferential voting system - ie you number your preferences. The interesting thought is that maybe all the rat fans also really like alpacas & would have voted "1st: rat, 2nd alpaca". Their preferences are totally ignored by the existing first-past-the-post system.

  • I liked the voting system just the way it was! The only thing I'd maybe change, is how many
items we can choose from, 12 is too much choice.

As for all the intense campaigning ~hate it in real life, hate it even more here.
Intense campaigning/mud slinging, the more in-your-face candidates/campaigners are,
the less likely I will vote for them.

I do like the alternative Snazzle mentioned, if we all had  only one chance to vote.
This changing-your-vote-at-will-thing, is (imo) pure and utter nonsense, what next 'Votes for Sale'?!
I think about what is being offered/proposed, I make my decision, I vote.

  • By saying they are wild will that mean that we can not capture?
Can not wait to see which animal comes out on top

  • Results were already posted:  http://www.glitch.com/ballot/animals/results/

Sloth won, Fox was second, and the Alpaca lost by 17 votes.  The natural breakpoint of the voting actually was after the Alpaca; however, they said we'd only get the top two...straight popularity vote though there really isn't a significant statistical difference between the 2d and 3d place finishers.

  • I think that the big gap after the top three is an artifact of the voting system -- once enough votes were in that clear front-runners emerged, people focused their votes on moving those front-runners into or out of the top two; I suspect that if we had been told that there would be four new animals, there would have been five with very close votes.
