can we just settle this. family game or not?

i can't really find an official definition for what a family game is or not, but i mean, it's essentially the same as a 'family film' in regards to the use of language. so, while 'family game' doesn't have an objective definition (yet), 'family film' does. it's "a film genre that is designed to appeal to a variety of age groups and, thus, families." i think we all agree that the game appeals to many age groups. i suppose we could also agree that the game is PG-13 considering that a player must be 13 years or older to play (with parental consent). films typically are upgraded to PG-13 from PG when language is used sparingly (generally, less than 4 times) or the movie is especially violent. note that Glitch never uses language and is never violent, so the game really should be PG or even G. Certainly, it would be rated E for everyone with a disclaimer that they cannot control the content experienced online.

ultimately though, the game has parallels with a family film that's rated PG-13. and as such, we shouldn't use language.

thank you for your time.

(edit: ToS says 14 years or older, so I guess PG-14 would be more accurate.)

  • ^(`∀´)_Ψ Not a family game. I don't like it when creativity is compromised when a game is forced to tone down "language" or "adult-themes". If someone is 13-15 years old and playing Glitch I won't dislike them for being young, but I'm in my twenties and I want to play a game with a more mature community, I don't want this game to be overrun with tweens.

  • Early on in the game I made the mistake of starting a thread about animals with bad names and pretty much got blasted for doing so. I only started the thread because I was unaware that WE could name animals and thought we had some pretty raunchy devs about - lol. Having said that I realize now that perhaps I should have left the whole subject alone and reminded myself of what I once did while teaching.

When working with high school students I heard just about every combination of curses you could dream up. I would be shocked and give hefty consequences, but they really didn't care. Frustrated, I changed my tactics. So instead I walked into class and told the students that I was pretty sure I knew every curse word in the book, but in case I didn't, I wanted to invite them right then to fill me in. No consequences at all - just go for it. Give me the worse you got - what I got was dead silence. Hmmm...
I guess my long-winded point is that if you tell them no- they certainly will. Grant permission-they will usually censor themselves.

  • I work in an elementary school to pay the bills (tutoring kids who are considered "far below basic") and am still in school getting a post-grad degree.  I love Glitch because, when I get home at the end of a veeeeery long day (as they all are, except for maybe Fridays), and I'm tired because I had to deal with Kid 1 cussing, Kid 2 hitting Kid 3, and Random New Kid licking the girls (seriously), go to class, and then babysit (for extra spending cash), I can get on the game and guess what?

NO KIDS.  No professors.  No supervisors.  No parents.  No one I need to reprimand or explain myself to, and no violence or disgusting shit (I enjoy violence in moderation in media, but I feel it's a bit overused at times.  As for disgusting bodily functions displayed in gross detail, c'mon.... I don't need to see that).

It's creative.  It's cute, and I'm a sucker for cute.  It's a bit like "Family Guy" in that sense that, yeah sure, it's cartoony and there's a talking animal so kids might be attracted, but a decent parent should say, "Hmmm, when I feel you are mature enough to handle the childish jokes, I will let you partake."  Working in a school, I know this isn't always the case, BUT... parents can't complain if they violate the ToS.  And I don't need to reprimand the little buggers.

No, not a family game.  Not a game where there needs to be censoring and stifling of creativity, and making adults feel like this is just one more part of their regular day instead of a game in which they can take a break from the responsibilities of the Real World.  I am in my twenties and don't curse much (in type, not much at all), but I really don't give a fuck if I see it, or if I feel the need (or am just frustrated enough).  My sister is 15 and could probably handle the game and not be seen as a "child" (I will probably invite her, actually, once the game re-opens).  I have also met students who are wise beyond their years, but I really don't want to have any sort of peership with youngsters.  I work hard at establishing myself as an authority figure, and just... sigh.  I want to play with adults.  I'll hang with the 15-year-olds because my sister is one and I know they're not all bad (grumble), but under 14?  Please dear gods no.

ETA: I had a 6-year-old tell another kid to "kiss my ass," and a 5-year-old call a girl a "fucking bitch" on the playground, so cursing is not going to corrupt them, but I'm afraid that their presence would cause the game to be revamped into an overly-cute kids' (or "family") game, thus ruining it for the adults.

  • Mr. Dawgg, I didn't read everyones reply to your post. But, I have had similar thoughts when I first started playing the game. My kids will not understand the adult humor this game has to offer so I am not worried. If they happen to read the forums I have a blocker that @#!*%'s out all the cuss words. So, I have no worries. Besides, I think my kids have unfortunately heard just about every cuss word there is to man thanks to public school and kids with potty mouths. My kids are pretty protected as we are careful to what they watch on t.v. and how they pick their friends. And we are careful to mind our language at home as well. I am not worried about this game at all anymore :) I have to say that I do agree with Eliza Thornybur ( I hope I remembered correctly how to spell that. I am sorry if I got it wrong)

  • +1000000 to Stoot!  He said it perfectly!

"Uhhhhh ... yes, it is intended for adults. And yes, consenting adults in social situations can feel free to find a level of cussin' that they find acceptable — I'm quite a cusser myself in real life, with people I know. Or even, selectively, in public speaking.

But, all you swearing over and over in this thread seem a lot more like kids than adults. And: going around persistently swearing just because you know other people find it offensive is the kind of thing that will get you silenced from public chat channels or even kicked out of the game. So: don't do that. It's not "fighting for free expression" — it's "being a jerk".
Posted 7 hr ago by stoot barfield Subscriber! | Permalink"

When I was young I was once told that walking into a room with me in it was like walking into a public bar because I swore so much and, even now, you do not want to be in the same room with me if I stub my toe or can't get into Glitch because my language will blister your ears and make you blush no matter how tolerant you are of swearing!

I'm older now, however, and I have been badly hurt by hearing those words, repeatedly, from a rapist.  He used those words to rape my mind.  I guess the physical violation wasn't enough for him.  I don't want to hear those words at all any more but I can handle them if there is clearly no disrespect intended, or if there is a good reason for them, such as not being able to get into Glitch ;D

I understand now that using those words is disrespectful if I am not sure how the people around me feel about them.

I'm not here to tell anyone else how to live or how to act.  I winced as I read the words but it was my choice to read them and I skipped over them wherever possible.  I can, and do, close chat windows and leave the area if people start using language that makes me feel violated all over again but I am extremely glad to see Stoot say what he said because I was starting to wonder if Glitch was, after all, not going to be a safe and happy place for me to play.

People in this thread seemed angry and hostile and determined to defend their right, as adults, to swear as much as they like.  I acknowledge people have a right to say whatever they like but it would be nice if, as adults, they would be prepared to acknowledge some people might not like their swearing for reasons that have nothing to do with wanting to spoil their fun!

+1000000 to Lucky Pierre too because I am assuming this was genuine.

"I actually didn't think of anything sexual when I was milking the butterflies.  I just thought it was inventive.  And massaging them with lotion, that makes sense too.  It prevents chafing.  Thanks for opening my eyes up people, and ruining the innocent joy I was experiencing while playing.
Posted 10 hr ago by Lucky Pierre | Permalink"

This is exactly how I have been approaching the game.  I massaged the butterflies tired wings with zero sexual thoughts and nibbled the backs of sweet little piggies the same way.  The joy of a special beta item has been stripped from me by the non-stop sexuality being assigned to it and I feel the same way Lucky Pierre feels whenever some new sexual innuendo is pointed out when I was either taking it at face value or doing my best to ignore it.

I have no problem with people snickering and giggling about these things but I really don't want my face rubbed in them either if you don't mind.  It's innuendo so that those who want to look at it that way can and those who don't want to can avoid it.  Why do people feel the need to ensure we all have to look at it the way they do?

Oh well.  Each to his/her own I suppose.  This is a game for adults and I don't want it to be anything else but that's my opinion.  No offence is intended to anyone in any way!

  • Enola, I love your name. Was my grandma's middle name. Now my great neice's name. Never thought I would see it anywhere else. Anyways, I never put an indecent thought into any actions of the game either until I started to read the forums and then I was like "NO WAY" and then I laughed. I thought of milking the butterflies like you would a cow. Unfornuately, even the most innocent things can be made naughty because of the way some people think. Not blaming them...it is just the way the majority of the society is. Doesn't make the game or them all bad. I would like the game to stay an all adult game too. Honestly, if kids did happen to play this game the majority will lose interest fast.

  • last night as i was trying to fall asleep after reading this thread (insomnia more related to other things, but the mind seizes on the last thing that interested it) i was thnking about the tendency people have to talk of many of the behaviors discussed here as "juvenile" or "childish".

i think it's partly true, but it's not really related to age. i worked for many years in a middle school. there's a set of behaviors that's developmentally appropriate to that age group, but we occasionally see those behaviors in younger children and we often see people who just never seem to grow out of them.

i keep running into players ingame who strike me as very much the seventh-grader, but i'm sure a number of them, if i looked closer, would be in their late forties and just never stopped being the seventh grade boys at the back of the bus or the eighth grade girls at the dance.

i am not a biologist, but i think nearly every higher vertebrate species has some version of poop jokes.  there are still really two questions here: 1) "are crude events and language appropriate here?" and 2) "should this game be suitable for children?".

    my answers:

    1) sometimes. be aware of your audience and try  to maintain enough courtesy to get along in a public venue.

    2) no. it is a place for grownups to enjoy. there are very few venues where grownups can play in an environment like glitch; either the game is too heavy on adult themes and violence, or it is too full of children.

it is my suspicion that the developers are betting on finding a demographic of adults who like a whimsical cooperative play environment and are trying to cater to that under-served niche and (i hope) make a ton of money on it.

only tangentially related to this thread: stoot, i love you.

every time you open your mouth to speak, it makes me smile. thank you for your work.

  • I am not a kid or even close to ever being carded again but somehow missed the part about butterflies being milked as in a sexual sense.  I have a good imagination and still it does not compute in my teeny mind that it has a sexual connection, now eating meat by nibbling on a pig perhaps, I can see the undertones of seeing it in a sexual way.  That does not include me, when I nibble on our piggies its so I don't go to hell for starving to death.  Even though I now realize some people think along those lines does not mean I will.  Other people will always have different perceptions then mine or yours, (of course mine are always correct lol) I think of it as we all live on this planet together but everyone of us lives in our own reality.  Nobody has the same life experience as you or me which makes every one of us unique.  So if some widget wants to swear and makes me feel uncomfortable I go somewhere else.  I don't have to listen to things I don't like and I don't have to make the other person glue their mouth shut or feel like a censor.  That's because I am an adult and learned how to play nice in the sandbox of life.  Sorry I'm rambling someone splank me a good one.  Teal Deer off and running.

  • I always found the piggies hilarious and strange, like they were pulling off a chunk of their backside to give to you. "Thanks for petting me, here's a chunk of myself! Whee!"

There's something whimsical and comically dark about that, but not in an overtly violent or offensive way (to me at least). The piggies clearly take no harm from giving you meat, but it's still pretty bizarre.

  • To clairfy, I never said FIGHTING for free expression, I said exercising my right to it. I don't cuss JUST because it's offensive. I cuss because it's in my nature to do so. I'm not being a jerk when someone tries to silence me and I say "you know what, fuck you." You should all know how I feel about oppression and if you think I'm going to stand for it you've got another thing coming. Anyone who dares try to tell me what to do or what not to do can go fuck themselves, because I'm not your bitch, I'm not your slave, and if you don't like it then you can just hit the ignore button, but don't you dare try to exert power over me, because you're nobody. Except staff, of course, who DO have the authority to censor, but otherwise, if you're a regular user like me (who pays the max subscription, so don't try holding that over my head), then you have no right to tell me what to do.

EDIT: And just in case anyone's wondering, this IS the censored response. I have enough respect for the few here that deserve it to not just go about repeating the F-word in every instance. But I'm going to use it as liberally as I use any other word, because that's exactly what it is. It's like any other word (again, with the exception of words specifically meant to oppress a group of people). I just realized that this is another one of those threads I'm going to be wasting my breath and energy in so I'm officially bowing out before I traumatize myself again, lmao.

I am NOT here to babysit your kids.  If you want your kids to play, then you better damn well be here supervising them.

Don't get me wrong, I love kids, I just don't think this is the right game for them to be in.  I personally think that most kids would find Glitch doesn't have enough action for them.

I don't even want to get into what they imagine about splanking.  LOL  Unless we're talking about pirates who love making people walk the splank.

  • I know it may be childish to swear or curse a lot, but being childish is fun~! I am often very childish. I like the sexual innuendos the adult content and the adult humor that tiny speck injects into what appears to be a childish game. Adults like me play games like this for various reasons but primarily because of the community.

I hope Glitch continues to foster an environment that welcomes creativity and doesn't censure it's members when they are controversial.  No one here wants to feel like they have to constantly watch what they say out of fear for offending someone else, but players should realize that they are saying things in a public setting. If for instance I make a joke about being a no-no powder dealer or make a joke about how I'm addicted to it, I don't want to worry about being reprimanded for offending former addicts.

I wasn't trying to make anyone walk on eggshells or take my feelings into account - I was just trying to say some of us have pretty good reasons, reasons that are not about wanting to oppress or control others or spoil their fun, for disliking certain words.

Mer Maid, I use basic behavior-mod with those yutzes when I run into them in-game.  I play WoW, which LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT ENTITLED  SUBLITERATE TWITS is full of them.  I have a high-level character with some talents that are very popular amongst the populus, and I refuse to do any service for any player unless I am spoken to politely and in full, grammatically-correct sentences.  Apparently I am the meanest person in the whole world.  Yay!  Get off my lawn, ya darn kids!  Nice people are rewarded with free portals and enchantments.  Noblesse oblige and whatnot.

Oo, which brings up the question, is there an iggy list available in Glitch?  I've never looked for one before (because all the Beta Babies are such charming, adorable people, who would want to ignore them?) but it might be nice once it goes full-on open.  I, too, would prefer to just filter the stuff that bothers me rather than let it ruin what is, to me, an incredibly pleasant experience.

I have actually had this conversation numerous times. Serious conversations.

Most we've come up with that penises are (1) one reedunkulous lookin', (2) just all out there on the body, and (3) less mysterious.  Edit: And (4) the danger/shaky ground of sexualizing women when they don't wish it. I phrased that poorly.

#3 is a difficult one because it is mostly due to a history of hiding/denying female sexuality. And is tied to the shameful history of male dominated comedy.

BUT, there is hope. Culturally we passed a milestone the moment 30 Rock used the term "vajayjay."

  • Tried to read everyone's post, but they started to blend together. I was kinda hoping someone from TS would outright say, Mr. Dawgg, you're right, it's a family game. But I guess that didn't happen. Thanks for nothing, TS!

But! Kudos to Stewart for saying what I was thinking on the way down. That is, the people who are randomly cursing come-off as childish while they're trying to act like cursing is for adults.

On Club Penguin and the Age Requirement
Club Penguin requires kids 10+ to have parental consent to play. So there's a parallel there to this game. Only instead of 10, it's 14. And as someone mentioned, Canada is different than America. So the 14 instead of 13 now makes sense. But if it were American, I imagine it would have been 13, but I can't speak with authority.

On Sexual Innuendo and Why It's OK to be in a Family Movie
Sexual Innuendo is present in family movies. That's precisely why innuendo is used, guys. So that the kids don't pick up on it, but the adults do. In Glitch, there is something for everyone. Sexual Innuendo is one of the things for the adults. But, the entire look/feel appeals to young adults. Think of Shrek. How many sexual innuendos were there about John Lithgow's character's height? Tons. Kids just thought they were making fun of how short he was. The entire movie's look/feel appealed to the younger crowd, and the more risqué jokes appealed to the parent's watching. There was also action and adventure and jokes that everyone could laugh to. There was something for everyone. I don't really see why it's not self-evident that Glitch is in this exact same category.

    Rephrase and Rethink
Let's eliminate the word 'kids' and let's embrace the phrase 'young adult.' Let's also agree that you can use whatever language you like in your private groups, but in global chat, let's be adults and refrain from using it. That's all I'm saying.

    Thanks for reading.

  • There is a quest to milk a certain number of butterflies. The title of the quest is called "Happy Endings", which is a fairly well known slang term.

Not a huge deal, and it will go over the heads of many people, but I found it kind of juvenile. That's all.
Posted 15 months ago by magic panda Subscriber! | Permalink
  • That phrase comes across as "in global chat, let's all be adults and conform to my personal set of beliefs and morals, and refrain from using it [swear words]"

Being an adult does not mean being the epitome of polite in every situation, but it does mean that if someone brings up that they are offended by swear words, you try to determine why that is the case and judge for yourself whether you wish to accommodate their wishes or not.
Being an adult also means that if you do not wish to see such language, you can close global chat whenever you please, and you can also stand there while your child/young adult is playing and close it for them and enforce that rule if it is a part of your parenting technique.

If you are in someone's house and they ask you not to swear in front of their children or themselves, that is one thing, but if someone walking down the street tells you not to swear in public, that is not a valid request, as they could simply leave if they do not wish to hear it. It is up to the person who is offended to remove themselves from the situation in such small, unimportant issues as coarse language.

  • "but how come penises are funnier than vaginas? (hence... the pickle... and happy endings and not...??)"

I believed this to be true until I met this guy.  Please friend him.

Also, in thread after thread after thread, stoot has said that Glitch is NOT a family game, unless your family members are all 14+ in age.  So it sort of makes sense to my why TS has not come out and said it's family game, and never will.  Because...you know...it's not one.

ETA for Mr. Dawgg:  Ok, fair enough, I paraphrased him, but that's ok, people do that with God all the time, but I clarified it...if your kids are older than 14, then Glitch can be your family game. So in some cases, Glitch is a family game, BUT

My personal opinion on the kid thing is that the whole getting papers quest and Bureaucracy skill is part of a dastardly clever series of child-repelling tactics.  If you look carefully, you will see that Glitch is packed with these diabolical mechanisms, all designed to make a 10 year old yawn and go back to watching the Wizards of Waverly Place.

  • Biohazard, it's not my personal beliefs and morals. It's social norms and mores in general.

    edit:
Nanookie, show me where he said it's not a family game. Based on my definition provided, it's a game that has something for everyone... which Glitch does.

  • Because of the global chat I would say that if you are worried in the slightest about what your kids are reading...if even by accident then they should NOT play this game...it is as easy as saying NO. Don't let your kids play. Easy as that. My kids for that reason will not play this game. They aren't missing anything by not playing. I have just told them "NO" and that is that. I don't feel comfortable with them being able to chat with any one that they want to in the game. And I don't want them to read certain things. So, they just have to deal with my reasons and respect it is for their own good. I hope some day they will understand.

  • It is still stating that the way to be mature adults is to conform to someone else's morals.

He does not say "this is not a family game" he said just in this thread however that it is "intended for adults" which implies "not intended for all ages".

  • @Mr. Dawgg Biohazard, it's not my personal beliefs and morals. It's social norms and mores in general.

According to your standard and definition. Those norms and mores are different across cultures and societies, and as many people have pointed out, Glitch is its own culture. We as a group are defining what those mores and norms are, and we will likely always be in the process of doing so.

Much as I appreciate what you take issue with, I have to say once again that part of participating in a community with other people is learning how to compromise. No one is ever going to be 100% happy 100% of the time, but we can all work together to find a happy medium that leaves us pretty happy most of the time.

  • Mr. Dawgg......"Club Penguin requires kids 10+ to have parental consent to play. So there's a parallel there to this game."....there is a HUGE difference between someone that is 10, and someone that is 14.  I feel like I'm stating the obvious here, and I dont quite understand the parallel. Other than they both require parental consent?

I guess you could say that a motorcycle and a airplane are "parallel" because they both have motors and carry people. Yet they are vastly different.

  • Guys, try not to derail my thread. Thank you. I suggest starting a separate thread on penis vs vagina humor, and another thread for discussion of language used to oppress vs language used otherwise. Both in off topic, of course.

Also as an aside, anyone else who wants to joke about using 'language' to mean language in general instead of foul language, the joke was already made at least twice. The first time was by Stewart himself very early in the thread.

    Ok.

Miss Muffet, that's all good and well. But, I'm not concerned with the children playing the game. I just want to know where we're going to go with this. This is actually part of playing the game. What are Glitch's social norms? Is language ok? I started this thread hoping TS would declare it, but I realize now that they won't simply because they want to see what we come-up with.

Also, ultimately, GC will be gone, so maybe the discussion is almost pointless. Though, I think knowing what's ok to use in Local Chat will matter.

    edit:
Xev, I think we're on the same page.

Innie, let's not go to extremes. The parallel I was talking about was the need for parental consent.

  • We cannot decide right now in this thread what Glitch's social norms are. That's impossible.

The community is a fluid state. Things change on a day to day basis.

  • Edited to agree with Tene.

And Mr. Dawgg, I think comparing 10 yr olds to 14 yr olds is pretty extreme. That was exactly my point.

  • Tene, I wouldn't say they change on a day to day basis. They change, but not that rapidly. I would say they are in flux at all because no one is settling the point. That's why I started the thread. I want to settle it. What is acceptable use of foul language in GC or LC? I say, based on my reasoning (family game status, PG-14 status) that we should avoid its use.

    edit:
Innie, I wasn't comparing 10 and 14 year olds. I wasn't comparing anything. There is a clear-cut similarity in the ToS between Club Penguin and Glitch. That is, in spite of the game's directed audience, there is still a requirement for parental consent.

  • If T.S wanted us to watch our language, we would have a language filter. They have not given us one.
and the other note: this is not something you can settle on a thread in which only roughly 30 people have commented on.

It's not fair to the other people.

  • I have to say to everyone who questions the age limit who should play this game,
It says in the opening page of "Learn more about Glitch" that anyone can play.
But I say to the parents who are worried about their kids playing that if you worry then don't let them play. If you are at work and worry about your kids gaining access to the computer while you are at work then block the internet from them. I remember the day I argued the same thing. What a newbie I was....haha ... I have learned that if they can chat in game then they just don't play. I have no problems with telling my kids "NO". It is for their own good. It doesn't bother me if they like it or not. My kids have lots of other things they can do for fun without the use of the internet. Plus...I love the fact that I can block them from anything I want on the computer. For now... :)

  • Why don't we go the opposite way? I think everyone should be required to say the word "fuck" in global chat at least once every three sentences.

    Just a thought.
