New GPS position and look

There is a new design and position for the GPS system (click a street on the map and go to "Set as Destination").

Throw some feedback here :D

  • Definitely like the old way better.

  • With the pointing finger is hard to determine the actual direction of the next post. Consider changing the asset.

We could really use a keyboard shortcut that would activate auto-walk, like when you click on the hand.

It would be really handy to have the destination text in the new UI open the map to that location.

  • I like that it's at the bottom, but I don't like the big hand bubble sticking up in my space. Can the words in the bottom be slid over and the hand be put next to them within the box?

  • This is great! I play a lot from far away so it's nice to have a bigger "arrow".

  • RE: www.glitch.com/forum/genera...

Zdaz, what specifically do you like about the old UI better?
Posted 4 months ago by Ustice Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I liked how it was right under the minimap. I think it looked better as well.

  • I see why you went with a friendlier look. I liked the streamlined old, but that's just me not a flaw.

I also liked having it higher up by the map bits. They all seemed of a category.

That said, I can see why you want to use the dead space in the bottom right of the screen - I hardly ever look in that corner. It'll take a bit of transition to get used to looking in that corner. Probably at least 48 hours.  :)

OH!  And it's only telling me my final point and not what the next signpost is going to say until I'm right up on it... I guess I can live with that, but I'm used to both bits of data the whole time.

  • I like the new way ... the hand takes getting used to, but it works. +1 to Kiarra's idea.

  • I don't really care so much about whether it's at the top or at the bottom.  It's the hand that feels goofy to me.  Is there some way that the direction indicator could be incorporated into the "next street" display?

  • The new UI does not interact well with the notifications that we get in the bottom-right. They overlap. See an example here.

  • I prefer the old way, too. The location under the street level map made sense to me, and the new version is too big and has the potential to be mildly obscene:

Seriously. What is that hand doing? It looks too Mickey Mouse for Glitch (so does the reshuffle hand).

  • I agree about the hand. Doesnt seem to fit at all.
Posted 4 months ago by Zdaz Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I don't like that once you reach your destination and then leave said destination, the indicator goes away. This is probably weird, but I liked to use it as a way to remember where I had been if I was running "errands" in a particular area going back and forth between streets (i.e., go mining on a few streets, but have a set destination where a certain shrine is, so that I could donate found music blocks, etc., and then go to another street for more mining). I also preferred it at the top of the screen.

  • I hate it so much.  It's HUGE and it's goofy-looking and it's divorced from the minimap.  Please please please make it go away.

  • I originally thought that about the upgrade card hand, but it eventually grew on me. I'm not sure how I feel yet about this change however.

  • The hand just feels like it's taking up so much screen space. Esp seeing there is room in the sign box for an easy to understand arrow.

  • I love the box at the bottom, the finger is a bit big but i can live with it.  Overall, I say it is a big improvement.  Thanks!
Posted 4 months ago by Ishtar Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I like it. One small note -- it seems like the finger is angled pointing up a little too much, like it's pointing at the actual street name on the sign instead of just at the post. It would seem more natural if, on flat ground with the sign a few planks in front of you, the finger were pointing parallel to the street.

  • Needs to go back with the mini-map. Needs to show next street *and* final location.

  • - I don't mind the move on screen although I find that it doesn't feel natural at the moment. I think that's because it's below my path and not a spot I'm used to looking at.

    - I don't like the fact that when you start, it doesn't tell you what street you're going for, because I like to know where I'm going in advance, instead of having to hunt around for "maybe this is it." Also, sometimes I do forget where I'm going. I see that you've made it a mouseover: I really preferred the old behavior with both visibile at the same time by default.

    - I am just a tad dyslexic, and the finger pointing is more difficult for me to interpret then the arrow was. I have a feeling of uncertainty when I try to figure out if I'm going the right way.

--eta: although I do like the thumbs up at the end. that's cute.

  • I prefer the old way. I don't hate the hand, but I liked having the GPS up near the mini-map so I could easily gauge which signpost I was heading for. I also miss seeing the name of the next street you're supposed to take before you get to the signpost.

  • The new GPS: Just click the hand and you go straight to your desired destination pole/route.
Posted 4 months ago by Vavoom Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I like the look of the new UI, but not knowing the next street you are going for till you get to the post is a pain, mainly because it's very useful to know when fending off deimaginators.
Posted 4 months ago by Vogon Blarg Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I find the hand really hard to read/interpret - I keep missing which way it's pointing - and I would love an option in preferences to turn it back into an arrow so I stop walking the wrong way on streets.
Posted 4 months ago by eruthros Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm fairly indifferent to the position of the thing, but the hand does freak me out a little. I was momentarily confused whether it was beckoning or pointing (I guess it's the angle of the finger?). But, maybe it just needs time to get used to!

  • i like the new hand and don't mind if the next location is not permanent, cause i can mouse it if i want, but i think this position interfers with other notifications like the summoning box. why not at the left of the mini-map?
Posted 4 months ago by mira gaia maia Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I too would like it if both final destination/next street could be shown at the same time. I noticed as I walked sometimes the new display would switch between the two (usually dependent upon how close I was to the signpost) which was confusing for me because I have abyssal short term memory.

I know you can mouseover the hand to get it to display the other destination, but as I play almost entirely via the keyboard whenever possible (due to wrist-strain issues), it's a lot of wasted motion for something that used to be displayed easily :(b

  • Sorry, I really don't like it. It's harder to see than the old one, and I find it really counter-intuitive that it's so far away from the map. Even when I'm moving through an area to somewhere else, I like to look on the local map to see if there are people there/how the geographical layout is, and now I have to look up and down to see when I need to use the next signpost. Also, the hand feels less precise than the arrows - I like to try and determine where the next signpost might be based on the angle of the arrow and the map in a slightly trigonometric way, and the hand just doesn't give a precise enough angle for me.

  • Likes:  imagining which giant is guiding me, mousing over to show the next street, and the sweet little thumbs up upon arrival, like it down on the bottom as that's where the "actions" appear.

dislikes:  overlap on notifications, perhaps move the guiding hand to the lower left of screen instead of lower right?  no notice of being "off the path"

whimsy:  if you go afk, have the hand snap its fingers to get your attention.  also, have hand change size as you get closer.

edit:  might be even more whimsical if the hand changed style w the street you are on. :-)

  • Awesome feedback!

So here is what I'm going to be doing shortly:

    1) The destination text will be clickable and open your large map dialog to the location
    2) The hand is going away and being replaced with an arrow
    3) The arrow will be part of the text area (not above it)
    4) Notifications will auto-hide the GPS and it will appear once they are all dismissed

  • will wait to see the changes but dont like it and if it had to stay i think the top of screen is a better place for it. I think your eyes fall on it more comfortably if its top of screen than bottom :)

  • I like the hand and don't mind it being away from the map.  I also like that you can click on the hand and it will select the right street if you are close to the signpost.  What I find counter-intuitive is that most of us know where we are headed.  We would like to see the next step coming up.  I think that either you should put a preference or change the default around so that it constantly shows next-step, then hover for those times when you need to be reminded where you are going.

  • Guys, guys. Devs.

It sucks. The hand intrudes into the screen. It doesn't look like it's pointing a direction, it looks like it's picking something - like boogers. And it doesn't tell you the name of the next street until you reach the signpost, which is just stupid. With the old style, it told what the next street was; all you had to do was glance at it. I don't like that I have to hover over the nose-pickin' finger to see which street is next. I would rather have it near the street map thingy, too, instead of having two corners to watch.

And I know you're all up in the cartoony vibe, but couldn't it be a plain simple arrow? Inside the box, instead of appearing as Big White Intruder on your game space? Please?

  • I'm fine with the look, but I'm really missing seeing the next upcoming street name.
Posted 4 months ago by Stacita Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I far prefer the old style and position. The hand looks too childish. Having it at the bottom of the screen means moving your vision from top to bottom and back again which is awkward.

Perhaps it could be an option, so people could choose whichever style they prefer?
Posted 4 months ago by John259 Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It would be nice if the upcoming street were displayed anywhere on the current street, then you have more time to think about it.

  • Why not simply displace the notifications like they do when you get multiple ones? That seems to be the most consistent approach, anyway. For that matter, you could use the same construct for that. Just place the UI inside one of the notification boxes.

I do like that the hand was larger than the arrow, so it was easier to hit. That said, it would be even better to have that keyboard shortcut so that when I am navigating around, I don't have to switch back to the mouse to do so.

  • I like the box at the bottom, but I HATE the finger.  What was wrong with the arrow?  It was nice and utilitarian, and not...cartoony.  I don't want this to be a cartoony world.

  • I liked it much better the way it was before all the changes, actually, I really do not like the way it is now...sorry.
I find it's not very user friendly, and somehow it just looks very 'wrong' (think Dr's Office...)
The top right hand corner is (imo) the most useful place for it, as the mini map and the new regional map (which I so totally l.o.v.e.!) are in that corner, even the world map is right there ~it's like a 'Location Information Hub'.
Please, change it back to the "old style".
eta: It also gets in the way of all the other messages that pop up in the lower right hand corner...

  • Was better an old one. But since it's already confirmed arrow will be back and within text area... No more suggestion... except.. when I arrive to destination point I would hide GPS after a while. Usually I have some things to do at destination and the GPS is always there until I close it manually.. every time.

  • Will wait for the changes.  generally I don't like anything obscuring any part of the bottom of the screen.  That includes Notifications but I have had to learn to ignore them.

I just set a destination and found the hand and obscuring destination so annoying that I clicked the X and will just check the map when i need to.  Inconvenient but better than having more stuff at the bottom of the screen.

  • I very much like that you can click on the hand and it takes you (generally) to the sign, since I tend to do that with the mini-map anyway.  The positioning isn't too bad at wider screens and, for me, less obnoxious than when it was at the top.

I DO wish that it told me what the next street was in addition to the final target, but that's just being nit-picky.  All in all, I kindof like it.

  • I thought it was just fine before the changes. I prefer it to remain under the mini-map. Looking up/down and all around confuses my eyeballs.

  • I like that the GPS no longer obscures the top right of the screen. That was a pain in the AL or in Roobrik/Balzare.

Not thrilled that the GPS now stops me at the sign/end of every street instead of having me continue on to the next street. EDIT: Maybe that was a bug, it takes me to the next street as usual now.

  • Hnh. I don't find the hand to be an improvement over the arrow. Not only is it pale against certain backgrounds (go stand up high in Ilmenskie, you'll see what I mean), an arrow is... an arrow. It points, it indicates, it does all those direction-y things, and it does them much better than a pointing hand. There's a reason you went with arrows in the first place, and that reasoning was not wrong.

Like others have said, I also think the icon (whether hand or arrow) should be in the same box as the directions.
