Higher level players who still look like brand new glitchen

When I come across a glitchen whose avatar is still one of the 4 brand-new-glitchen looks, I usually info them to see how new they are and (probably) to give them a gift or two. I am always surprised when I occasionally discover one of them to be fairly high level - there's at least one somewhere in the 40's levels. I can't help but wonder why they have chosen never to customize their appearance at all. Is it a bold statement or just a total lack of interest in that particular aspect of the game or ????? If one of you who fits this mould happens to read this post, could you tell us, what's your reason for not customizing your appearance? Enquiring minds want to know!

  • Maybe they are real-Ur models for the looks staff selected for new Glitchen, because they just embody the face of newness...

  • maybe they're infiltrating the n00bies. don't blow their cover!

  • Once I achieved an appearance I liked, I stopped fiddling. Fashion & cosmetic changes don't interest me.
Posted 4 months ago by Spockian Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yes, but you still fiddled!   You aren't in a default starter outfit like some folks.

  • My character looks like a little girl in T-shirt, jeans and sneakers, and that's how I think of myself exploring and enjoying Glitch - with a child's imaginative delight.

  • I tried to change my appearance once I subscribed, but by then I was already used to the way I looked. The new stuff just didn't look like "me".

  • Yes, I'm also curious as to why they don't change their clothing or their looks...or why they changed back to a known newb look (Let's be honest, the 4 starter looks aren't so awesome that one should want to keep that exact look for eternity).  My cynical view is that they are hoping for freebies from people that won't check their level (and of course, likely won't post their answers here).  But people will be people and play the way they want to, and it is indeed a very small possibility they are just too lazy/uninterested to change out of their original look.

I know they did away with the original automatic display of levels for people, but I'd love it if there was a quicker way to access that info (maybe a hover over option instead of the two clicks and waiting for menus to load that it currently takes, since sometimes by the time I get to the info, the person has already changed streets).  I'm sure we're missing some newbs because they found the wardrobe/vanity options early on, and then there are the higher level folks that look like newbs, as mentioned here.

ETA: TW and SS, Hawkwell is pointing out that some are still looking like the 4 original newb looks.  You both have made modifications to your looks even though you aren't in subscriber clothing.  I guess you both are trying to point out that some may like the newb looks/be used to them before they find the option to change...and that is fair enough to bring up.

  • I am level 39 and very very happy with my original look.

And with all the crazy looks I'm seeing around, I am now one of the most unusual sights in Ur :)

  • Wait, there's a special look for new glitchen? I'm pretty sure I've customized mine out of it, but any non-subscriber might just not like the other free options they have available.

I mean, this is part of why my house remains low on furniture - there's generally one free upgrade option (there's none for armchairs), and if I don't like it, I'd have to save up currants and buy on the auction house, which is just too expensive for me to bother. To get new wardrobe options, I basically looked at the wardrobe every single day and snagged any freebies I spotted, but that's kind of tedious and I'm sure anyone with even a drop less interest in their look wouldn't bother and would stick to starter clothes.

Instead of nefarious plotting, look for laziness or poverty. These are both much more likely.

  • I customised my Glitch's look the day I joined, and skin colour aside, I haven't changed it since.
You can't really tell whether someone's a newbie or has been here for ages by looks alone, at all really.
Posted 4 months ago by Loki Laufeyson Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I stayed with my basic newbie look for ages because I loved it.
I got accused constantly of keeping the look purely to get freebies, which was both hilarious and insulting.

Hilarious because I didn't get more than a couple of freebies even during my levels 3-5, and on the couple of occasions someone did give me items I pointed out that I wasn't new and they said they already knew that, they were just being friendly.

Insulting because I kept the look simply because I liked it.
The colours were ones I liked and the clothes were nice and simple.

So instead of me being able to simply be me and enjoy the game, I was eventually badgered in to changing my look. While I love my look now I am still disappointed that I was policed and pushed in to a different look because others decided I was doing something wrong.

I get the impression there's a rather nasty clique that are trying to dictate who they want to play Glitch, and enforce just how they expect it to be played.

Asking questions is cool. Responding with accusations of people having malicious intent based on their clothing choices is not.

  • @b3achy, I have two friends who've been playing since october in their original bee-shirt looks and in their cases as I suspect in all others, I can assure you your ungenerous thoughts are totally misplaced.   Anyway, why on earth would a player strategize to be gifted three sandwiches or a blue sno-cone from a high level player by "pretending" to be a newbie?   Everything comes so easily in the game, once you've been playing a few days gifts are the last thing on anyone's mind....

  • For those of you who'd like an at-a-glance indication of newbies, chime in HERE.

  • Good grief folks, just saying what probably many of us are thinking when we see a very high level person still dressed like a newb.  Sorry some of you find that stating the obvious is so "offensive". While it is a person's prerogative to never change, I personally don't comprehend folks never changing anything...though sheer disinterest in your avi's looks is a factor, as is laziness, as is trying to fake out others.  They are all possibilities as are others that aren't id'd by me here - though I'm not saying any one is the motivating factor.  I was only saying what I tend think first, and yes, I acknowledged that it was a cynical view.

For those that don't remember the original newb looks - here's the late alpha/beta looks:
    Look1
    Look2
    Look3
    Look4

And here's the original Alpha look.

Many of us after first beta, and before open launch, but after reset, were dressed like newbs for fun, since we weren't going to see any real newbs for a few days.  I thought in that case, it was hilarious to dress as a newb...but then changed out of it...maybe some never did.

In attempting to find old players that are inactive with the newb looks (since I didn't want to link to active players), I did notice that it is most common for the guys to keep their original looks - and look 4 seems to be the most favorite with look 3 being a close second in popularity.

  • Not everyone focuses on the wardrobe part of the gameplay. Janitch still runs around in the outfit I chose on the first day of play. :)

  • Now I'm tempted to change my look back to the starter one.  Maybe I'll do it to celebrate when I hit level 50. :>

  • I and my alt accounts have all stayed basic newbie dressers. Those that know me know that I do not do so to get freebies.
It is a matter of choice, I do not dress up in RL, I got that out of my system more than 50 years ago.
When there were street projects I found it an advantage as I could see myself in the crowds.
Since so many new players rush to wardrobe the original outfits are always the least used and the fancy outfits common.

  • And Ayzad, you are really close to plain vanilla newbie, but you have changed a few things. Looks like hair colour, eyes and ears have been modified. Interestingly (to me at least) I find your avatar quite pleasant looking, while I always feel the original Look4 character you started with had an unpleasantly surly look. Your few small changes have been a big improvement!

  • I was in my 20s when a friend took me to task for still being a default glitch :)
ETA: Having just read through all the responses, I'd like to say that unlike Xombiekitty--"took me to task" was done in a fun friendly way. Just a good friend giving grief :D
No other players ever mentioned my noobish look.

Without intervention I'd probably still be a default...or perhaps as Bruce. Wardrobe and vanity are utterly uninteresting. Last change was for a pool party, a month ago, I'm still ready for the pool.

I only change when it's social.

  • I wasn't aware this was a thing. When I started playing I bought a silly hat and didn't bother with much else until many levels later. Even now that I've accumulated a bunch of free clothes I still switch back into my original stuff quite often and no one's ever mentioned that I've got one of the noob looks.  The clothing and face/skin options just aren't my thing really as far as game play go.

  • I wore my newb look for a looong time.  I'm just not much into clothes or decorating in RL or Glitch.  Also when I started Wardrobe and Vanity just refused to load for me.  I do have 2 or 3 outfits that I wear a LOT (and a bunch of other clothing).  I've changed for St Pat's, a funeral, and Glitchmas but usually it's my basic 2 or 3.

  • I was just hoping someone here could post an image of the really really really original looks, avatars that were these blobby single color placeholders for the avatar system.  (Hburger are you reading this?).  In those things everybody looked like a newb!  Or a splotch of paint, as it were.

They could making a stunning comeback as Zilloween costumes, come to think of it.

    ETA: Here they are.

  • Seriously? We have the fashion police now?
I'm not aware of any requirement to customize your avatar, nor any prompt or quest to do so. It's window dressing, even if it upsets those on a mission to gift new players. Please, enlighten us all to the 'rule' so players aren't being called rude or having cranky assumptions made based on their appearance.
My first thought would be to ascribe the phenomenon to lack of interest in customizations. My second thought would be that the vanity and wardrobe can take a while to load. My third would be that perhaps the beginning outfits render just a little faster (as they are uncomplicated).

There are as many ways to play Glitch as there are customizations and players. Ur would be a much more pleasant place if there was less complaining how people must play.

  • It's obvious you can't judge anyone by how they look so stop doing it!  I have greeted Noobs who are all decked out in fancy subscriber duds and hair and I have met long time players who are still dressed as Noobs.  I don't assign any particular reason as to why for either.  I assume (so maybe I am an Ass) that they look the way they do because they LIKE it!  Can you imagine that?  Lol!

I am one of those who reverted to the Noob look just prior to Launch last year.  I did not change my face or hair color though.
