"Power-Saving Mode." [Staff explanation!]

Wow. Apparently when we go are inactive for a minute or two, we go into "Power-Saving Mode."

It just changes the display (but not the functionality or timing) of the game to use fewer of your computer's resources.

Simple: If you are not actively playing or viewing the game, there is no reason to try rendering at full speed. QED.And: the computer physically uses less power, saving the Urth a little bit. Finally: Flash already does this in many circumstances. We are simply forcing it to work this way and making it clear that it is happening.

  • it gives your computer a little break ;) And if your video card is dirty like mine it makes it a lot quieter! haha

  • O.o  Awesome.

  • Does it give the computer a break, or the Glitch? I would prefer the Glitch.

Yeah, I'm not quite clear on what it's supposed to be "saving".

  • can't make 80 boards in a machine and read the forums without it going into power save.  :(   gotta keep watch.  not so good.  :(

  • I was just about to write this.

Update:  Not crazy that it propels you forward like you clicked the right arrow button.

  • Going in to power save doesn't stop your crafting from finishing or anything, so there's no reason to keep watch.

Becky: your computer.  The normal, bright screen quite literally cause both the computer (video card) and monitor to draw more power.  Might even take some pressure off their servers, but I'm not so sure about that.

  • Glitch Change Log ‏@glitchlog

When you leave its tab/window alone for a while, the game now goes into a "low power mode" to free up your CPU for other important things.

So it appears to be for your computer.

  • yup and it changes the frame rate to 2 fps...so your computer doesn't have to do so much work

  • heh, to give your Glitch a break, log out!  I've always suspected that regular energy drain is, in part at least, to encourage players to not stay connected to the server if they're not actually playing.

  • Hmm, not sure how useful this is. When I'm playing the game I'm playing the game... If I leave it's probably to go the bathroom or get some food or chase after the kid. If I'm doing other things with the computer it's not something that CPU intensive--usually just going to the forums. Never had a problem with performance when doing that before, but maybe others have.

  • Why does my PC go into power mode when I am gardening? When it does the only way out of it is to close down and start again. Clicking it is useless.

  • like the idea - just finding the details a little irritating; it kicks in just before the end of a max amount crafting run on most tools I've tried so far.

Could something be done for those of us who like to watch chat in Glitch while doing things in another window?

  • Miss Melody, see www.glitch.com/forum/ideas/... and let me know on that topic whether you're actually experiencing a bug or not (if the game is not actively being played for 60 seconds, we go into low power mode; actively is defined as being the main opened application and browser tab).

  • that makes sense. still messes with my two screen news & glitch routine horribly, so it'd be more use to me on a slightly longer delay than 60 secs, but I do like the idea in theory.

  • when i play on Ipad (via Rover), i cant exit powersaving mode, so have to quit.  Which is a bummer

  • It might be that we increase the delay.

FunkUK, I'm really sorry -- we very much do not support anything other than desktop computers right now. It's hard enough to keep Linux users happy :)

  • Hello, I think that it will be better if we can get an Settings panel where we can control things like this. I would like to be able to select if I want to use it or not, and if I do, how long should Glitch wait before putting me into Power Saving Mode.
    Thank you!
