Addiction Level

Is Glitch one of the most addicting games you've played?

I must say I didn't want to stop playing, there is so much to find out already. It's a game which stands out compared to others. Deeper gameplay. Impressive graphics. The devs have found the right atmosphere and game mechanics.

I expect 2011 to revive my gaming career!

  • Well my playing habits speak for me. Two (all) weekend tests ago I played all but 8.5 hours that the game was open.... I mean I did have to sleep a little ;-). Then the last full weekend test I think I left for about 16 hours total, but I wasn't feeling well or I would have played more and slept less, lol.

  • Hmm, hard for me to say, since I'm prone to game addictions anyway. I do think when Glitch launches it will leave a lot of people cold, and make drooling gamer-zombies out of the rest of us. My only faint hope is that I'll be a slightly wittier and slightly less mindless gamer-zombie playing this than some other game.

  • It's definitely the levelling mechanic that causes the addiction. I don't know how many times I've said to myself '...just one more level before they turn off the servers...' :-)

  • I didnt really bother about what level I am so much as finding out what other cool and weird stuff I could make/see/do.

My addiction level? The forums are keeping me alive right now, besides food, water and air.

  • Ohohoho, we think it's an addictive game now. Wait till Beta/release and then it'll be even better...! I just can't wait for new clothes and new locations :)

  • If they'd give me a currant for each time I checked wheter the game is online, I would now be rich.

  • I am curious---for any other game that you have considered wildly addictive, but eventually your time spent leveled off...what kind of time did it level off to (how many hours/week, minutes/day etc)? After how long did you completely stop playing and what super-addictive games do you still play?

  • In all honesty, I'm planning to deactivate my account when Glitch comes out of beta, as I've already seen how addictive it is for me, and I fear that it would have serious consequences to my non-Glitch life. My wife would say it already has.

One possible "out": I'm thinking about getting a treadmill, and setting up a rule that I can play Glitch as much as I want, but only when I'm actively using the treadmill.

  • If a game or website starts affecting my social life I ask someone to change my password for me. So far this has happened with Game Neverending, Flickr, Puzzle Pirates, and possibly now Glitch. I blame Stoot for 3/4 of these!

  • so .. for me the answer is no.

i'm not even sure it is fully addictive.

it's weird, because when i'm in the apartment and playing, i don't really want to stop and glitch has my total attention for hours and hours and i'd rather work on an additional project than sleep.

on the other hand, when i am away from the game while it is running, i'm totally happy and have very little compulsion to return to play. sure, i'll put the game back on when i get home, but i'm not going to go out of my way to get home and do that instead of doing something else "in the real world". i never think "oh, i'd much rather be playing glitch".

i think the timer based skill system has a lot to do with this. even when i'm away from the game, i'm still making progress, so it is no big deal if i'm not logged in all the time. i've missed more than a couple of saturday and sunday tests due to previous commitments and .. no big deal.

  • I find myself surprised at how addicting it is. I mean, I will be playing, and I will think to myself, "Self, you've pretty much done all there is to do, who cares about learning one more cocktail recipe, this is getting repetitive. Go do some errands or watch TV." But then three more hours go by. And I check in here at least once a day on the off chance a test will be on.

I'm not a gamer at all - Tetris and Space Invaders were my thing, with one marvelous detour into Myst - so I don't really know how to compare it. Does Angry Birds count? I play a LOT of that.

  • I think for me the definition of addictiveness will be determined by the quality of solo play.

All the social aspects are great, but this INFP finds it exhausting after a while--although not so much with Glitch now just because the game is not open all the time. But I hope that play in Glitch, while offering a very rich group experience, won't end up leaning too hard in that direction. It shouldn't suck for you if you are not in a guild.

Also, being involved with the game while it's being developed is really even more satisfying to me than I expect playing the final version will be--it's very fun to be able to make suggestions, and I really enjoy the billiards game of ideas among players.

  • This INTP hasn't really been involved in much group experience beyond scraping some barnacles with striatic (work) and sniffing poo with kevbob (social) ... I've been quite happy pootling about by myself the vast majority of the time.

  • I didn't play at all this last test because I didn't have time, and there were no withdrawal symptoms- but again, alpha is just so particular. I get withdrawal symptoms right upon closing, usually! When the game is out and I'll be able to play whenever I want without a 'end of the weekend panic', that's when I think I'll really be able to tell just how addictive I find Glitch.
