Avatar animations for use out of game?

Does anyone have a desire to access their avatar animations outside of game?  The API allows downloading each animation (jump, sleep, etc) as a large image composed of individual frames.  (I was toying with the idea of exporting an animation to an animated GIF for a more interesting image in the Glitch Atlas about page.)

That made me start thinking that one could even put together skits of themselves and friends talking and using the emotes.  Anyone have any creative suggestions in this area?  (Something to make putting together another tool worthwhile.)

  • how cute would it be to have a facebook or website/blog badge of your little avatar actually doing something besides being cute? I would love that, but have no clue how to do it!

  • I think there's someone on here that makes machinima, and that would be a rather awesome tool for someone who does such things.

  • @Lemo Yeah, I think animated GIFs would be the obvious output, but Flash or video would also be possible.

  • I technically can do it. I've been busy with other projects, but I have one with the API and the character animation. As long as you aren't in a hurry I can put something together.

Just email me at fokianfool@kingdomcomegames.com (I just created this email account for the occasion - it's nice to be the web administrator for the company :p)

  • Striatic made this animation last year, and also a way to put your own avatar into it... so yes, it's definitely possible.  :)

  • Yep. I've used it. Actually I know of a way to improve it too.

  • We've open-sourced code for manipulating avatar spritesheets to perform the animations you see in the game. It's available on Github: tinyspeck.github.com/avatar... — hopefully people will do some cool stuff with it.

  • Thanks Stoot, I did see that in the developer resources section (and it does help one figure out what the data means).  I'm working on a new site now, which should make extensive use of those animations.

For now, I have a page that allows you to produce an animated GIF from any of the animations for your character. This can be fun to use on your web site or social network site.  (Does Facebook allow animated GIFs?)
    glitch-playhouse.org/portfolio.php (Portfolio tab)
(If you're afraid to authenticate or have problems, you can see an example on Glitch Atlas.)

¡This site is still in early development and most of the features are still missing!

One question I do have is why is there so much padding in the sheet images?  It would be ideal if the sheets contained only the space necessary for the character's motions.

  • Fun ideas, I really wanna see what you gonna do with these mysterious other tabs :]
I remember Aero did some marvelous scenes, for inspiration
Btw I'm not getting an animated preview on the right, is it in the works?

  • @Lemo yeah, I expect that you will get an animated GIF on the right when you press the Generate button.

I tested on Chrome, Firefire and IE and all work for me.  However, I see that IE seems to enforce a minimum delay of 10/100ths of a second, which makes the animations run very slowly.

  • @Stoot Thank you for open-sourcing the code so that we can play with it -- that is awesome! <3
