Forum & Group Discussion Improvements

I noticed that Group Discussions have a full WYSIWYG html editor for input, allowing you to do neat stuff like use rich text or insert in-text hyperlinks, but it lacks the ability to edit a post after it's been put up.

The forums, on the other hand, support editing an existing post, but lacks support for rich text and in-text hyperlinking.

Is it possible to give each of these what they're lacking? I think it'd greatly improve both the forums and group discussions.

  • I also think it would be good to include a button that allows a user to "quote" text from a previous post, so they can respond directly to certain things and readers won't have to read through all the old posts to see what they're talking about.

  • I've noticed that the Group discussion doesn't seem to support non-breaking spaces properly. They show up as " " when posted.

  • Also, a 'Topics I've Posted In' button would be swell...

  • Would also like to be able to go directly to the last post (or am I missing something?). I know we are meant to read previous posts but as the threads get longer, you may want to go straight to the end to see the latest on something.

If I am being dense, someone please put me back on the right track;)

  • Hooray!  Forums now use the same WYSIWYG HTML editor as group discussions!  I can do things like bold, italicize, and even create links!  Further, non-breaking spaces seem to be fixed!  It's still impossible to edit your own posts in group discussions (even though you can do so on the forum), but I trust that will be corrected in due time.

Thank you, developers, for your swift attention!

  • Doc Oblongata: Consider "due time" now... it was actually just a small bug that was preventing you from editing your own Group posts/replies... should all be fine now!

dopiaza: "topics I've posted in" would be kinda handy, huh? I'll see how easy it is to make that happen once a few other things are cleared off my plate.

Shepherdmoon: I'm thinking of adding support for the "quote" HTML tag when I get a moment (the WYSIWYG editor could do with a few bug fixes in general first, though).

Beyond that, the "quote another's post" thing might not happen for a while, sorry.

Jobynana: "get to the last post" is slightly complicated by the fact that we (in theory at least) paginate long threads... but it's definitely doable. I've made myself a note to look into it as soon as I have time.

  • Excellent.  Thanks so much for kicking that pesky bug to the curb, hitherto.

  • You can do all kinds of things with this. Indeed.
heh, except most of what i did didn't show up. :)  I suspect most tags were disabled.

  • I think it just supports bold, italics, and linking, Tingly.  It's not a full HTML editor; that might be abusable.  Still, it supports rich text and links, and that's more than enough for me.

  • I had strikethroughs, super and subscripts, courier font, maybe something else going. Some stuff doesn't work even with that, like font color.

  • A "my posts" button would be really great.  I used this extensively to check if there were answers to things I commented on in Faunasphere forums.  It did link to the topic/thread (like dopiaza suggested), but also to right where my original post was in that thread, which saved having to go through all the pages of a topic/thread when I hadn't been there in a few days, or if the thread had gotten pretty lengthy.  Thanks for all your efforts, by the way!  I did notice all the things that already have been resolved!

  • +1 Hab, that was also a favorite feature of mine in the FS forums.
