About that Reset (And letting new people in)

Hi everyone. First off, this thread is NOT about the merits and demerits of a reset.

A reset is going to happen (Supposedly 6+ weeks from now). For the old players, this is not a big deal. They are aware of this issue, and have mostly accepted that their current work will be lost. However, for new players it is a bigger issue. These people are just starting out and trying to find their way. For them, a reset would be much more confusing than for an experienced player. For example, someone who has been using their current character for 6 months is essentially at the end of their skills tree and might not mind the reset. For a new player, the idea of playing nonstop for a week or two, than losing all that work, can be very frustrating and discouraging. So, I suggest that queue-jumping be disabled for a few weeks leading up to the reset so that new players do not have to go through the early experience twice.

There is also another issue related to letting new players in, this time after the reset. Right after the reset, everyone will want to play for a longer stretch of time without interruption so they can get back to their accustomed bag layouts, houses, etc. Therefore, people may not want to devote as much time to helping new players get used to the world. So, there also should probably not be queue-jumping for a few weeks after the reset.

TL;DR: It will be harder to handle new players in the weeks surrounding a reset. Solution: Close queue-jumping for the weeks surrounding the reset. Your thoughts?

Edit: Corrected timing on reset, thanks LB-o

  • Edward: great point about people not wanting to help new players right away!  I can see this happening too, and I'm not only worried about players being too busy to help, but I'm more worried about players not having global chat as a tool to help them advance.

I think your idea about queue jumping makes sense, however, I think that it is very important at this crucial stage in development to get new ideas, new input, untainted opinions.  So while it can be more inconvenient for a new player to restart, they will probably be a valuable tool in getting the game set for the launch.

  • Some of the greeters are fairly worried about post reset as well because a lot of us will want to buckle down and get our Glitch on but of course we'll want newbies to get greeted as well! Quite a dilemma but we have gotten a lot of new greeters lately so we can spread the duties around more :) Be interesting to see what happens about all of this.

  • I disagree - leave the game open after reset, let people in, always let people in. Really is no need to worry about these things - and regarding experienced players being willing to help new folks, I'm betting there are tons of us who will help newbies.

It's all good, don't worry, be happy!  :)

  • Let the new players decide for themselves, and don't assume anyone will (or won't) be any certain way.

  • I got the hang of Glitch within the first couple of days - I don't see why most other new players would not also have the same kind of learning curve. The devs work hard to make it easy to get started!

  • Good points there, MeherMan and Cerulean. Glitch is a very helpful happy-ful place:)

  • I agree with Edward. Everyone benefits when there are players established enough to be helpful and patient enough to be kind. I'm not assuming anything but this is my perspective.

  • Lilypad:  I am glad you were able to catch on so well.  I would say I made it to Level 11 before I even had a slight grasp on the game and what to do, and I still at level 36 I have a lot of things I don't know about.  The game is kinda complicated because its so simple, if that makes sense.  It takes a lot of "playing around" to really understand what the game is about, and that can take quite a bit of time for some people.

I think this is a very valid concern.  I am sure there are players who WILL help new players after reset, but likewise there are players who WON'T help because they have their own goals to accomplish.  We are still in Beta with a limited number of players and I see a TONN of new players who are confused or lost or don't know what to do.  The problem can only get worse when there are more players and they more experienced players will have their own Glitch to worry about.

  • When the game goes live it will be "open beta" right? Will people need to wait for an invite at that point or are the doors simply flung open?

  • Isn't the point of queue jumping so that we can get more players in who *want* to get in right now instead of waiting for the folks who may have forgotten that Glitch exists or that they signed up for it?

And the benefit of getting more people in *now* is to test how the servers will handle additional load of new members, new avatars, more people in the system at once, etc.

New or old, there's going to be a reset - if you know that going into it, then it shouldn't be an issue, really.  After all, new or old, this is beta and you have to expect a reset at some point.

  • @Riverwalker: It's been mentioned (on Twitter, I think) that Glitch may stay an invite-only game after it opens.

  • Hmm, interesting about it being invite only.  To foster the community and friendliness of this game that seems like a good option.  I know stoot suggested having new players donate $1 or $2 to a charity keeping the "riff raff" out, but I like the idea of both of those things.

  • Stoot mentioned in a previous thread that there would be about 2-3 days (or possibly longer) between reset and launch: http://beta.glitch.com/forum/general/5150/46618/

  • The invite-only is intended to insure a steadily increasing load on servers instead of a sudden spike and crash. And I don't think 2-3 days is enough to get fully settled in. On this, my FIFTH reset, I took 5 days to feel up to speed, and I think my early game strategy is pretty refined compared to people who have only had one or two resets.

And I can tell you, my first reset was after I had had 6 hours of play time (2 tests) pre-reset and I was pretty peeved about losing my progress so soon. After two months (24 hours), I was okay with the next one, but I felt somehow cheated after the first reset, and I don't want others to have that experience.

  • When I get in when it goes live, I am gonna demand that Rascalmom drop whatever she's doing and greet me. If she doesn't I will be seriously offended. I don't care if she's at work, taking care of her kid, asleep, etc. You signed up to be a greeter- greet darnit :P

  • Wait, when reset comes around, does everyone start in that neuron brain place 'And so it begins...'?
Posted 17 months ago by Millie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I am going to toss this out there, because I always so (and it is not really in relationship to this thread)...
The original quote from last week was "AT LEAST six weeks."
    There is a difference.

  • @bored: For you, my dear, I will drop whatever I am doing and greet ya (as long as my Glitch can be all or half-naked, of course)! Anyone else, you'll have to ply me with bribes ;)

    LB-o, yup, good point!

  • Rascalmom, The minute I have enough skill and tools I promise that if you greet me personally I'll dazzle you with sneezing powder, sparkle powder, laughing and crying gas and cover you with hundreds of kisses while you're trying to work your next project. Is that a good enough bribe???

  • leave my mom alone.. :P

  • @Rascalmom   Do we bribe you know or after the reset ?  :)

  • Hmmm, I just started playing this week and was never greeted. What exactly do greeters do when they greet? I think I've done fine without it. I progressed and had fun. I love the explore and figure things out aspect - would that be missing had I been greeted? Not complaining, just wondering.

  • Nah, I don't think it'll be hard to manage. I'm less than a week old and if you told me I was getting reset tomorrow and there would be five times as many n00bs running around as last time...I wouldn't cry!

    This here's a beta, y'all! Yeehaw!
Posted 17 months ago by naitPee Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Audaria, sometimes the greeting isn't "on" (depends on time of day and other factors), plus you get asked if you want a greeter (which could be easy to miss among all the other stuff the rock tells you). It's mainly just a fun welcome by real humans...with a little help thrown in for those who want it. :)
