non-verbal interactions

The message about the new avatar system reminded me to finally get around to typing up my thoughts about non-verbal communication.

The first time I tested, I found myself wanting some way to indicate a friendly greeting to other players I passed by without actually typing anything. In lieu of other alternatives, I would occasionally resort to interpretive jumping as a clumsy means of signaling 'howdy there' or 'woohoo! game show wheel! go you!'

This got me thinking of Puzzle Pirates. I've seen it said that the little "I'm checking out your stats" icon effectively serves as a kind of pirates' handshake, demonstrating how even in a gaming situation where non-verbal communication was not coded in, it can be valued to some extent by players.

So non-verbal communication strikes me as something it would be fun to have, even if very simply animated.

I'd love to be able to wiggle my antennae. A head nod might be nice, and even a simple eyebrow waggle would do in a pinch. Maybe we could have the ability to set an alternate expression through a second setting for the eyes or mouth that we could toggle on and off.

Other ideas?

  • It would be great if we could perfect 'sarcasm' as an emotion, as it's often used and typically misunderstood. :)

  • Yeah, there's a great idea.... *eyeroll*

    /sarcasm ;-)

A thought bubble with a happy face or a waving hand is hello. A shovel in the bubble is "I dig you." A steamshovel is "I really dig you." Or maybe they want to bury you.

  • Instead of a thought bubble coming from me, I would like to be able to encase someone in a giant clear "yo" bubble that would pop after about three seconds--much less intrusive than a kiss or a moon, but just as hard to miss.

  • (Avatar of Meer)

The emote icon travels from emoter to emotee, with either a vapour trail or a trajectory arrow; easy animation, and helpful for non-verbal communication.

  • The new avatars will have various expressions which you can control or which can be triggered by external events (anger, surprise, happiness at first), but those are not directed at an individual.

I love, love, love the emote icon trajectory thing.

  • I'd want both avatars to do it in duplicate in the corner if I'm walking so I can see what happened and who did it. Or more simply have descriptive text in local chat. "PeterVerona shamelessly closes one of his eyelids and opens it again in your general direction."

  • I'm thinking the same, Just bumped into my first player and had no idea what to do - even if we can't add something simple like a little wave it'd be worth adding something to the little tutorial to guide new players on social interactions in game.

  • I would love to have more nonverbal communication skills! I especially want to be able to wave and smile with an easy click of the key board.

While doing the quest to gift 5 lower-level players I felt really uncomfortable trying to read their information. When you click on a player your avatar steps way too far into their personal space. Lots of players ran away. It seems kind of agressive. I finally learned that I could get another's info by clicking on their name in the chat box but often by the time I did all that the player had run away and left the area which made it complicated to gift them. Often they don't respond to IM's. Probably because there is so much to pay attention to that they don't see it.

The avatar animations are one of the greatest charms of Glitch. They're so brilliantly done! More please. :)

And now I know that too! Thanks. Yes, I'm only one gift into that quest, and not for want of trying.

  • I play another game, where we can wave and blow kisses...I keep trying to do those here in Glitch.  Some things like that would be very nice to have here. Also, allowing our avi's to dance would be cool.  In a couple other games my avi's can bust a move, albeit quite uncoordinated-ly (sort of like me in RL)...would like to do that with our avis here, if for no other reason than to crack up the person I'm with...

  • I would really like a wave. I barely use the smile, anger, etc, but I would use a wave all the time.

  • one thought- i love my dia de los muertos mask and ain't gonna change it.  but she can't lol or any of the other cool emotions. so the waves and all of the other ideas would be extra cool for her. masks have feelings too! :)

  • +1 for waving, it would be nice to use to say 'thanks' as well.
