Two Accounts?

Long ago, in a galaxy far far away, I accidentally asked twice for a beta invite, using a different email each time. One of those emails I now use regularly to play every day, so I'd forgotten I'd ever signed up with the other. Just recently I got the second invite, though, and am not sure what to do with it. Can I create a second account? Should I create a second account? Are two accounts even allowed? It's no big deal - I'm not sure I even want to create another character - but I thought it might be smart to ask.

  • Most people have a mule right? At least until the devs unlock the ability for subscribers to have an extra character or two I imagine...

  • I had 2 mules in another game, just for storage.  But it also became kinda of expensive and when everybody set up many mule accounts, it became confusing, as everybody then let there kids run amuck and that turned into a big disaster.  I've thought about doing that here and the only reason would be so I could have 2 homes, otherwise I'm pretty content with just one account.  I don't really know what others think about having a mule account, it would be nice to find out.

  • Oh hey, this reminds me! I know that FSers liked to call a secondary account a mule, but it just makes me think of pinnochio, to be honest...

I think it would be really great if we could come up with a brand-new glitchtastic word for this here. In a chat a few tests ago, a few of us came up with doppelganger, which could be shortened to 'dopp' or maybe 'doppy'.

What do you guys think? Any other ideas? I know there are a lot of you FSers out there, but it would be just glitcherific if we could forge new linguistic territory together in our happy new world that we're sharing now. :) Thoughts?

  • Since the competitive aspect of this game is so low, I don't see a huge problem. To get any major advantage, you would have to be running both at the same time. Even with two homes, to have one account use the others, you'de have to long on to give them access. I suppose have one character with a home with a large garden would be relatively easy to work with (log on a coule of times a day to plant and reap, and then mail it to the other character ever few days).

As far as I can tell, it is NOT against the current ToS... but do not quote me on that.

  • Yeah a second account is a very low priority for me, I'm really happy with the game.  The idea of calling a mule account dopplenhanger or dopp doesn't really make sense to me, I thought that dopllenhanger meant a real something.  Main reason it takes a lot of typing and spelling which is not my strongest skill, one of my weakest in fact.  The other reason so many people know what a mule account is, and not just in the dead game f/s, so if its does get used in Glitch so what.  We could always use both words like sea - see - so - sew, or maybe not.

  • I know plenty of players who have dopps. Some use them, some don't. Don't know about the legality (well, you know what I mean) of them though.

  • xoxJulie you're right, a doppelgänger ís a real something. A second character wouldn't be a real doppelgänger, unless maybe you make them look the same but that just sounds creepy...

I personally believe that a second account is fair game as long as you don't use it to "farm" currants or whatever for your main character. Have your mule learn all the mining skills so your main doesn't need to... I don't think that's in the spirit of the game.

But when it's not against the ToS and you don't feel objected, why not?

  • julie, a lot of people in your FS community who are now playing glitch use the word mule, but i have never ever seen that word used elsewhere on the internets.  alts yes, multis yes, those words are very commonly understood to mean a secondary account, and easy to type, and would fit in easily in glitch, but where's the fun in that?

think about it -- we have a rare opportunity here, to shape the linguistic conventions of a new community!  that is so cool!

i did also think at first that doppelganger is not exactly accurate, but doppy is kinda fun to say, and more importantly, it is a unique word for a unique community.

but sure, dopp might not be the best fit... how about 'puppet'?  or i would love to hear other suggestions!

fellow FSers and friends! (ok I'm not in your group, but am definitely a friend!)  let us forge new territory together, and have a grand old glitchety time in this brave new world!  who's with me?!  ;D

ETA: in response to the original post, i have only one account: no multis, alts, sock puppets (hi mefites!) or other pack animals.  having two accounts to have any kind of gameplay advantage seems unfair and unfun to me.  a long time ago, stoot said that secondary accounts would be a subscription feature, but i haven't heard anything along these lines in a long time.  either way, this should probably be addressed in the community guidelines that i understand are coming...

  • I had 3 accounts in FS, but in Glitch I've decided to just use the one.  Right now I don't really see an advantage - except for what Lord Bacon-O suggested.  I'm content with one account, but have no problems with Glitches having more than one.

  • I would like to have separate characters for storytelling purposes. Don't care as much about being able to store/schlep more stuff.

  • Mule actually is the common term for a character created for the purpose of benefiting a player's main character. It's urban dictionary's first definition:

    n.  1. A carrier of things for someone else; often used to refer to a carrier of illegal drugs, or a video game character who functions as a holding space for items for another character.

So while it may not be very Glitchian, it is something that's grokkable by most game players. Whereas using a unique term might be confusing to new players. But I'm also kind of a standards nerd, so.

As for the issue itself.. I don't like the idea of having a bunch of zombie glitches building up a single mother Glitch, but I wouldn't mind having a secondary character to experiment with, especially when the skill tree starts trending more toward experimentation. Try out different skills, different avatars, blah blah blah. I have some really fun avatar ideas, but feel like changing my main avatar would be some kind of drastic change. It just feels wrong!

  • The only reason I got a second account in Faunasphere was because I hated releasing one of my guys to make room. The max limit of creatures per account was 30. (Well, towards the end we could go up to 35) Anyway, at times it was confusing to keep up with 60 kids. I often felt like Mother Hubbard. lol

I haven't felt the need to have a second account in Glitch so far. The only reason would be to have a pied a terre in another region. Maybe I will feel different later on, but for now I am content with one glitch:)

@katlazam: I love the idea of creating glitch-specific lingo.  I'm not clever enough to come up with a catchy one to replace "mule" off-hand, but will think about it.

  • thanks for the link, sheepy, although a +175 score is not *super* convincing as evidence of a widely-used phrase...  ;)

it is interesting though that the definition focuses on the 'pack animal' aspect of the term.  because i think that having more than one glitch for storytelling or role-playing aspects is very cool.  in kingdom of loathing, people are allowed to have "multis" as long as they interact as two people who don't know each other and happen to be playing the same game, to keep things fair for everybody.

but i think that if we are talking about an account "who functions as a holding space for items for another character", i.e., a "mule", then that seems completely unfair and unfun, and if that is something that is ultimately not allowed in the community guidelines, then it's not an accurate term anyway.

    so...  other ideas?  :)

  • As usual, I'm in the minority here... if the game didn't intend for certain limits (i.e.e inventory) to be in place, then there wouldn't be such limits. There should be no need for a mule. To say that "oh, anyone can have a 2nd account so it's fair" is a justification of a mule account is a rather weak argument. If it really doesn't give that much of an advantage, then there should be no problem banning 2nd accounts, right? Because they're no big deal and don't give any real advantage anyway, right? Right.

Unless, they do. Which makes them an unfair tool to be used, and should be banned anyway.

  • Years ago, in Lineage II, some people talked about having a "backpack". You played both characters at the same time (in different boxes), and the backpack followed permanently your main.

In World of Warcraft, a character made only to carry stuff, play with auctions and so on is called a "bank". Having a bank is considered best practice (you don't need different accounts, but you don't play both at the same time).

  • I've heard of and did consider a mule, but it seems against the spirit of Glitch. I may create the second account solely for the purposes of further exploration of beta, but I haven't decided if even that is necessary. Thanks for the thoughts, though, everyone! I wasn't sure what the Glitch community's opinion was on the idea, so I didn't want to make another character without asking you all first. :)

  • Is it any more convincing if I point out I'd never heard of FS til I started playing Glitch? ;)
@Nutmeg: Yeah, I can totally see the appeal, but in reality I'm way too lazy to deal with it!
Posted 17 months ago by Sheepy Subscriber! | Permalink
  • more convincing, i dunno, but more interesting?  yes!  especially with the info from ximenez.  i thought it mighta been a world of warcraft thing, but i never would've dreamed of 'bank'!  this online community etymology thing is fascinating... or i am a big, big dork  ;)

  • Again, I propose Bags of Holding (bigger than Bigger Bags). This would probably help a lot. They should hold, oh, I dunno, 50 items, but come at a price. Like, oh, I dunno, 50,000 currants. :P

  • As others have said, if this game is anything like any other game, you'll have a mule.

I say run the second account as a mule, and provide feedback on it. I know I would. If an Admin says to stop, stop. I doubt you'll be banned because you at least asked first.

  • Why would you need a mule when you can easily buy a house?
Posted 17 months ago by Victoria Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Unless it's unlimited storage, I can only imagine players going for a mule. Esp since accounts are free. But, I have not yet bought a house myself. I can't speak from experience.

  • Ah. Storytelling purposes. That did not occur to me. That might interest me.

Storage is unlimited with a house.... well, to a bit of a point. I had so much scattered on the floor in such "deep" piles, I started to experience a certain level of lag. But we are talking A LOT of stuff.

That's the thing, though. I don't think that it *is* like any other game.

  • I don't think it's really a good idea to have a mule account (whatever you call it) while we are still in beta since only a limited number of invitations are given out. But, since we can invite multiple facebook friends if you don't have friends wanting invites then I don't see why you couldn't use one for yourself. But, in this game at least as it stands now I don't really see an advantage to having a mule. When I played FS I did have one paid account and ended up w/free accounts just to have more fauna space. But, I usually spent all my time on the one accont and the other's just sat there. So, I don't intend to create a 2nd account unless the gameplay changes quite a bit. I can see if you wanted to have one house to use for crops and the other for herbs, but right now can't really think of another good reason.

  •  I was so excited when I first started, towards the end of alpha, I didn't really pay attention to much to the mechanics of the game except get those tasks completed fast, level up and learn. I created a mule account to take a different avenue of learning, buying, etc. for comparison against my main account. .  Once game goes live I will only use the main account.

  • I kind of have a mule, technically it's my son's account, but he's not that into the game and only logs in now and then. I never used it myself until herbs became available and could only be grown in the bogs. That character has a herb garden in shimla mirch and I have a house in alakol and it kind of works out, though it's a hassle to log in and out as one or another character and switch between the two.

I've seen the term mule used in ultima online when I used to play it.

  • It's significantly easier for someone to log into their primary account in the browser of their choice (e.g. Firefox) and their mule account in a 2nd browser (e.g. Chrome). Especially on an updated machine, which could handle both running at the same time with not too much of a problem.

  • Coming from the FS world, I really don't see anything wrong with mules/alts/mountain goats. They don't necessarily give you much of an advantage here, but they are cool for trying different skill sets, storytelling, or to even be a place of refuge for those anti-social days when you just don't feel like dealing with chatty groups or a 100+ friends...

I had multiple accounts in FS because I like to design different spheres (our home worlds) - it was a creative outlet for myself.  It actually started out as a single mule for growing/cooking food since I liked my main world to not have all the food trees/cooking crock pots in it (not very pretty when you are trying to create a beautiful space).  And then my design bug got out of control and I had 8+ very different worlds that I created. Here it's a bit different, since we don't have that kind of creative outlet.

I guess I don't see what's wrong with them as long as you use them to play the game...however you want to play the game (whether to gain some sort of self perceived advantage (which really isn't since anyone can create an account), or to try different things). But if you get multiples and leave them dormant, seems silly to get them in the first place. And I'm sure TS won't mind if you have multiples if you subscribe with them either...more revenue for them. ;)
Posted 17 months ago by b3achy Subscriber! | Permalink
  • ONE reason I could see multiples abused (and it would take many and effort): Buying up entire blocks of housing. Right now there wouldn't be any real advantage. If they ever allow player to player sales... then you could see some mighty be price gouging.

  • I'm sorry, but until you see otherwise from TS themselves, I wouldn't be so quick to condem people for having two accounts. With people having 1000 invites to give out, I also wouldn't say that it's an issue of limited invites.....

Once TS has a stance, I will be more than happy to delete my extra, but in my opinion, it's fine to explore a different side of the game....one of my characters has one type things, the other, the alternative.
Posted 17 months ago by NutMeg Botwin Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It's all about the things you can't do with just one account, like own different houses, learn the skill tree in a different order, see what its like to be a non-subscriber, etc... I would gladly limit myself to only one account if only that one account could have two or three characters.

  • I dont see anything wrong in one person having two accounts especially if they both are subscribers to TS.I have two accounts fully paid and one was my hubbys ,he does not want or have the time to play so I took it on only to find out it is not as easy as you naysayers think.it is very stressful playing two accounts ,yes sometimes at once.to help with the amazing race or things the other can help you get along with.I took that mule account and leveled him up all the time writing things down to help educate myself for the reset and amazingly learned a book of information that will be a good deal of help after reset. The main account ended a few test back leaving me utterly bored with nothing to do.The mule stepped in and took me through some remarkable lessons.will I play with it after reset.in time Yes,why because it is a paid account that I am sure TS will appreciate having real cash put into their bank.As do I care what you think ....NO.

  • Regarding the question of what (instead of mule) to call secondary accounts - Master Fabricator's Mule-Driver made me think that "Ghost" would be a great term to use on Glitch.

I know it makes no sense whatsoever (wouldn't the ghost be the first/deceased account) but I like the nonsensical nature of this term - a ghost probably doesn't appear as often as their main.

and I know this isn't actually a great idea for an alternative to mule - but I would love to hear more suggestions for this.

  • I think in Faunasphere a MMOG that was, when a person was idle and showed themselves as sleeping somewhere for long periods of time ,we called them ghosts.I never minded as this name I have has been around the internet with me for many years and many games.I chose 777 to add to the original Ghost as many tried to use it.and have actually opened games using my user name even the 777 part.I dont let it bother me at all .the internet is a hwy of many people and it is a compliment rather than an insult to like the same as me.using Ghost for all mule or alts sounds good to me.just please dont mix me up I am ghost 777.

  • When we use the word mule I think of drug mules.

In Second Life I had an 'alt' and it was to have some peace and quiet to go exploring as my original avatar had a rather demanding job. But I always felt really itchy and nefarious when I did log in as my alt. I have all kinds of alts in LOTRO but that's to try out different character classes and that's generally encouraged.

At some point early on (eight months ago or so?) I got the impression that TS was not in favor of one person having multiple accounts, so I've never even thought of creating one. Given the fact that one person could be logged on as two -at the same time- so easily, it feels like dirty pool to me, aside from the fact that having 2 houses would be nice.
