What do you think of the new Renderer? Test 6/29- 7/2//2011

During last week’s testing of the new, fancy, faster, renderer built for smoother play, the initial bugs were squashed and it’s now ready to go. All players will be using the speedy new client. Let us know what you think of it!

  • Feels alot more responsive and fun. FPS are more stable, memory usage dropped from ~300 to ~50. CPU usage fell from around 60% to 20%.

My system is: Debian Squeeze 32bit PAE, Chrome stable, Intel i3-530, 4GB RAM, Nvidia 560ti, 275.09.07 driver.

    Really really great work.

  • I've been experiencing two new problems ~firstly my avatar has been disappearing when I chat locally and secondly, although I haven't exceeded my daily coin limit. I'm not always getting the Xp.  (have reported)

  • correction to my previous post. the problem with the coins is display, as the xp is being added to my total ~ couldn't edit my op! arghh lol

  • "Working" and avatar/coin problems are, unfortunately, not renderer related. Please report them using the Bug icon in the game, thanks!

  • "Reticulating splines" is missing an "i".  I'm pretty sure it was spelled correctly last session. (?)

  • Also, running smoother than last session!  Nice!

  • I don't see it missing an 'i' Lelu. Thanks for the report tho!

  • After a playing a little big more i runned into a same issues i saw with old renderer. At the begining FPS and gameplay are good and smooth even in crowded areas. After 1-2-3 hours memory consumption is 100M or more and butterfly / chicken crowded areas start to be sluggish and pain.

If there is a way to help what happens in this situation and provide logs i will be glad to help.

  • loads ten times slower, lags up a bit also. i personally think the game ran better before. ;-) sometimes it takes upwards of 4 minutes to load an area. never had this problem until new renderer. i just teleported to newcot close, and my cool down time (which is five minutes) was up after i loaded.

  • Mike, no one's ever reported a location taking longer than maybe 10-20 seconds to load (and that is truly the very worst) -- an average *worst* should be less than five seconds.

I see you're using Firefox 5, which we don't currently support -- maybe try going back to Chrome. I'd also be interested in the results from speedtest.net at your location -- it's more likely that your internet connection has slowed.

  • Absolut wonderful smooth gameplay now on Mac OSX 10.6.8 and Chrome.
Constant freeze still present on normal renderer, experimental runs absolutely flawless for hours.

  • Played last night for just a bit but absolutely wonderful. I only had one crash on Chrome and that was when I tried to do the Rainbow Run quest. I simply reloaded and got in the next time fine. I will also say that either my mouse gremlins left for greener pastures (I didn't consciously DO anything) or this new version has fixed my mouse clicking problems as well. Kudos if it was the reindeer :)

  • So far this test I've had no crashes using Firefox or Chrome. I've always had regular crashes so this is great... so far... knock wood...

  • Thus far I've had no major crashes this test.  Last test I had probably 4-5 / day.  I did have a spot where I got hung up in the mines, but I refreshed/reloaded, and have been playing fine since.  Thanks for a much improved game from the crashing point of view!!

  • Played for a few hours on FF tonite. Only one crash after the rook invasion. I even went to a project. It was slightly laggy but nothing compared to what had been the  most awful experience previously. All hail the reindeer!

  • Crash rates have been greatly improved for me as well.  Reticulating splines also makes me very happy.  Splines need reticulation!

  • No crash, no freeze, very few wireframes at Cupcake's party! Go Jono!

  • Did notice a much higher memory usage this time around. I routinally had to dump my Plugin Container for Firefox when it was going over 900K memory, with Firefox maintaining a steady 200-300K memory. I did a LOT of traveling this time around, so i don't know if my unusual activity compared to before had anything to do with it. But I usually would dump the process every hour or so and then reload the page in order to keep laggy movement, keyboard movement 'sliding' (avatar acted like they were running on ice and not stopping on a dime anymore) and really poor jumping control to a minimum.

However I didn't suffer any crashes on it's own. Using FF5.0

  • Definitely was enjoying the smoother crash free play, and stayed crash free until the last 3 hours - flash crashed and then couldn't get past reticulating splines and browser freezes (Chrome & FF).  I would love to see a dedicated thread about what many Glitchers are doing with their settings for plugin/shockwave errors, etc. for Chrome, FF and other browsers.  Jackie Paper mentioned the Plugin Container with FF, this will be something for me to look into.  The Bug postings say to install a flash debugger version, but this has not resolved my crash issues - Not every Glitcher is having this problem, which suggests it could be pc/settings related?  What am I doing wrong?  Strange to go so smoothly after the new renderer and then crash and nothing (again)   :(   But still saw an improvement during play :)

  • I'm using FF 5.0
Also was seeing significant loading slowdowns.
    Speedtest.net result link

Speedtest rates me an A+ better than 99% of the U.S. Hmmm.

What have you been getting in my reports?

  • I'm getting the occasional delay between clicking on a sign post and the loading screen of the location popping up. Most times, this is negligible (around a second or two), but I've had instances of the interval lasting 7-8 seconds.

Still, the game runs a lot smoother than most flash applications on my MacBook Pro. Safari seems to like Glitch, thank goodness.
