Picnic baskets

From this thread:

How about a picnic basket or buffet table for group gatherings (parties, mining sessions, whatever)? It could be a one-time item with a fairly low cost or another tool.

When you set it down, people can donate food, drink and other substances (only items you can eat or drink). There would be a buffet of all options showing - not piles of food, but one of each item on offer.

ANYONE could pick up from the table, but only one item at a time and only for immediate consumption - no packing away a dozen martinis or stews. You could stand there and eat one after another, but you could not stow them away in your bag.

Right now it is a bit clumsy to eat at a party: click on the item, select one, find it in your pack, select and eat. With a buffet, click once to select then click to eat.

I guess the table could be left in the public area until nothing remains and then poof - it is gone. That would argue for the one-time use model. Otherwise, would the owner get the leftovers?

  • I think this is a great idea, and I'm glad you called it out and put it in the Ideas forum.

I'm actually the exact opposite of the party poopers... I feel bad taking something that's lying around, even if it is a party or group event. I feel like I never know for sure if it was dropped for the express purpose of sharing. With a buffet table or picnic basket, I wouldn't feel bad grabbing a bite of food or a drink. :-)

  • I'm just like Becky... I'm too scared to pick things up XD

I like this idea =D But instead of taking the item from the basket... you would 'eat' directly from the basket? So if there was Mustard inside the basket, you would click on basket, go through the foods to Mustard, click it, than you would gain the energy from it. (or mood whatever and xp)

  • Great idea! I, too, feel weird picking random things up at parties or gatherings even if I have been given permission to do it.

There is so much bad will about picking up food at parties!  The party spaces are so expensive, and all you get is the spawning ingredients, but if you touch any of them, the other party attendees get so nasty!

The fact that people feel the need to restrict what you can do with the food at parties disturbs me. Why is the assumption that it isn't being eaten?  It isn't very valuable.
