Should I come back to Glitch?

Hey guys! I quit Glitch around the beginning of June, I am not a member, and I quit right before the bacon wallpaper came out. What am I missing? Anything good? My go-to website that replaced Glitch, Toontown, recently got mass-hacked and it constantly reset the game about every three minutes. So I posted this from my phone, wondering if I should join. Comment below saying what you would do, and if you can say a few examples of new things that would be great. Thanks fellow glitchen!!!

  • Well, they made it so that you can sell items from storage display boxes, and they added towers that you can build in your home street to sell items in. They also added two new islands: Roobrik, and Balzare. Those are the main things that happened while you were gone. And I think you should come back, because well, glitch is fun, lol. But I don't suggest playing if you are playing toontown, because it's hard to play two games at once.

  • No there is no need to return at all. I mean, I myself have absolutely no fun in here. Buidling an ugly tower and all that lame work of decorating it. All those annoying friends coming over and talking to you...yuck... And what about that crab who seems never to be happy, and all those complaining critters who are so ungratefull, while all you want to do is show them around. Tss tss tss....and one advice: don't join any of the housing routes..you might encounter another glitch. EEEEEK. New cubimals are again costing a fortune to collect, nah...no need to come back at all!

    SO.....

GET YOUR *** over here and have FUN FUN FUN
If you are lucky you might get splanked too!

  • Why did you leave in the first place? Just because of Toontown? Well there will probably be another temptation right around the corner so maybe you should either wait and see or decide if maybe your ready to handle TWO different game sites at the same time!
Take your time, we're not going anywhere...

  • Bacon wallpaper didn't bring you back?  Or Bacon shelves or the giant can of Spam or the soft drink cabinet, or the giant Hot Dog bench?  Forget all the new furniture upgrades then and the ability to decorate 9 floors in a Tower.  How about all the iMG and other quoin filled puzzle streets and the Fun new iMG filled Card locations.  Hmmm...  How could you possibly miss the Mab Fest?  Zilloween is coming!  Jade is wearing her Tiara again so I am hoping to become a princess any day and maybe decorate my Royal Domain on the Top Floor of my Tower!  IMO, you are missing much more Fun here than you could possibly find in some game called Toontown (Bleh!).

  • There is little death in Glitch, and without some meachanism for renewal life stagnates. Towers have created massive resource sinks, but even those will wane soon as players harvest sufficient quantity.

To me secret to getting the most out of Glitch is to avoid "max out" gameplay. Just play casually, and it is always fun for me.

  • I quit because it just wasn't interesting anymore. There was no more quests for me, I wasn't a member, etc. I see there are towers now which is cool, and I went back to Toontown cuz I have been playing tht since I was 5, and I went back to see if anything changed (and now it's super extra fun). Plus I didn't have furniture making 2, therefore I had to buy all of the GOOD furniture which was a bajillion dollars. I just had nothing else to do and I got bored walking around and getting img coins.

  • Ultimately its up to you but here are my thoughts since you asked:
I had to stop playing for a while back in Nov due to some family issues I was dealing with. I came back in March for a night here or there but things were still being worked on (new houses, new areas, animals, etc.) So fast forward to last week...my family problems have ironed themselves out to workable now and I have time to play again. WOW! I had forgotten how much fun Glitch was. I was a level 14 and just HAD to get to a level 18 so I could one of those new Towers. I had to find some foxes and sloths in the new areas too. I had so many quests still to be worked on when I had left that there was a lot to do. Doing those quests helped me to remember how to do the actions in Glitch and what I needed to buy, sell, stock up on, etc. My trusty band of friends helped me out when I needed as well. All in all, there is still so much for me to learn and do. I'm sure by the time I am close to finishing those things, TS will think of more fun new things to do. I have never tried Toontown so I am not trying to compare, but I think Glitch and the Glitch community are awesome!

  • I would strongly encourage you, if you do decide to return, to pick a new username and build a persona that is representative of *you* and the unique community member that you are, as opposed to using the name of one of the core Non Player Characters of the game.

As somebody who is probably far too into the narrative side of things, I can't explain how weird it is to look at the forums and discover that Cosma is trying to decide whether to return to Glitch!

  • I have found recently that when I log in, it's always a series of choices about what I'm going to do.
    Sometimes that's overwhelming.

For instance, I know I need more metal, because, you know, projects. But then I also have to get my gardens set up, check out my routes, check in on the pigs, squeeze some chickens so I can fill the feeders. And oh! I should really get busy on my tower.

    Focus!

So, then I check my fuel cell levels, and they're quite low, so yeah, going to have to go get jellies, but wait! Someone's resource is broken. Gotta fix that. Crap, out of a vital ingredient. Slash home! Okay, got that stuff - now whose street was I on?  I forget. Retrace steps. Someone has fixed the resource.

What was I doing?  Right, metal and jellis, metal and jellis. Off to do that.  Get some metal. Crap, out of rookswort -- that's right, I'd put it all away.  Slash home.

Rookswort up. But I have to empty these bags.  Oh! Music blocks! Port to Ceb!
    Sell, sell sell!

    Slash home.

    WTF was I doing?

    Crap, it's midnight.

TL;DR: Clearly, there's nothing to do in Ur. :)

  • In my opinion, unfortunately, no.

From your post above it sounds like you quit because you recognized that Glitch is essentially about grinding.  It doesn't even try to hide the fact that it is entirely grind based.  If you had created the social contacts that made it interesting enough to log in and continue grinding you probably wouldn't have left, so I doubt very much you'll find anything worth sticking around for now.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you myself right now.  I log onto the glitch homepage to start learning a new skill, but rarely ever actually log into the game, and if I do, I can't bring myself to click and watch another progress bar.  It's just painful, not fun, for me.  *Shrug*

  • There's grind and then there's grind.

So, for instance, a long time ago, there was a text-based MMO; played it for years.
    Your options were:
    A) Go forth and kill.
    B) Sit around and heal.
    C) Sit around with your friends and suck mana so you could have a SHOT at crafting an item you could otherwise pick up for a song, in the HOPES you'd be able to create an item that PERHAPS wouldn't break, and would exceed what you could buy at a merchant.
    D) Bitch on the forums about stuff you wish the devs would implement, and then wait YEARS before they even acknowledged the fact that you posted.
    E) Oh, and paid access by the way.

What's great about Glitch is that you a) don't really have to grind. b) If you wish to, you may, but SO VERY MANY ways to do it. Don't feel like mining? Craft. Don't feel like crafting? Travel. Don't feel like traveling? Badgehunt! Don't feel like badgehunting? Go brush a fox! Or Cook! Or participate on one of the many forums! Or capture pigs! Or! Or! Or!

So, to say that Glitch is grind-based is, prima facie, true-ish.
What's interesting is that there are so many ways to play and participate in the game, it looks nothing like the grinds that were endemic to many, many MMOs over the years.

As Fatboy Slim once said/sampled/incorporated into a rather famous tune, "You can go with this, or you can go with that."

  • Grind is such a subjective word.  In the mmo-sphere, the definition really seems to be "doing things that I don't enjoy" -- and of course, "enjoyable" is also a subjective word.

For me, WoW was entirely grind-based.  What's that you say?  You say it is full of quests that alleviate the grind?  To me, the quests ARE the grind.  The rewards are high enough to make other methods of progressing less attractive, making it a bit crazy (still possible, just not practical) to skip them.  And they're all meaningless with absolutely no effect on the game or game world.   I could forgive that if the game had interesting combat mechanics, but with few exceptions, combat was just as meaningless.  Run from point A to point B, then 1, 2, 3, 1, 1, 2, 1, 3, 1, 1, 2, 1, 3 etc. until opponent dies.

Grind is a matter of personal perception.

So a game being interesting or not to someone, that's a very personal thing. If Glitch didn't interest you then it didn't interest you. But why would you say you had nothing else to do, when you could learn new skills in order to make furniture yourself?

  • Certainly some valid points, Crashtestpilot, but I think a couple make some assumptions.  For example, electing to not grind... what are you doing then?  If you assume a person has a social network in game extensive enough to keep him interested in logging in, then that is certainly an option.  The problem I find is that it is very difficult to actually create that social network in Glitch.  There is nothing inherently MMO about this MMO... no group based activites, no social panel for organizing groups in an ad hoc way...  It seems very isolated to me, in reality.  Everybody works in their own little silo

The so many, many ways of grinding in Glitch... I basically see about three ways.  Badgehunting, decorating, and all the rest (everything that is click, watch, click, watch, click, watch).  Cooking, mining, gardening, fox brushing, furniture making, herding, concocting, mixing, welding... these things are all the same, just with a different word for the progress bar.  Badgehunting and decorating are pretty weak as outside categories, too, since they generally require you to do the grindy bits to accomplish anyhow.

Off topic, which MUD did you play?  I played a diku-based one called Renegade's Outpost in the very early 90s, and have a very different recollection of how it played...  much more group oriented, attempting to solve puzzles and conquer difficult mobs through group tactics.  Trying to find ways to one man mobs, or two man, or sneaky little tricks that trivialized encounters, etc.  Sure, there was a fair amount of doing the gold grind in order to be able to pay rent on your equipment, but in this case if you didn't want to grind, there were plenty of group and solo based things to challenge you.

  • @saucelah - Agree totally with you about other MMOs and grind.  I've not tried WoW, but I did try LoTRO, and I found it totally boring for the exact reason you state... boring combat.  On the other hand, I started playing D&D Online about 3 years ago, still log into it almost every night for an hour or two.  It's an active combat system, it has a huge variety in character building (not unlike the pen and paper version, which is my background) and enough depth to hold my interest indefinitely, as near as I can tell.  Is there grind?  Hell yes.  It's avoidable though, and hte game is playable without it.  You don't need epic gear, or multiple TRs to play, you can log in and play casual in PickUp Groups, or join a guild and do whatever they're doing.  It's this part that keeps you going... social interaction that is built in.  There has to be a way to transfer that to Glitch.  I just don't know how to do it.

@diaveborn:  Learning skills isn't something to do in Glitch.  It just means going to the home page, clicking a skill and going away for 5 to 15 days while you "learn" it.  I'll admit that this does avoid grind in learning skills, but it really isn't terribly interesting either.  Perhaps this is where the connection needs to be between the social aspect and the in game grind.  A system of quests (for lack of a better word) that require a group of people focused on particular skills to accomplish in some manner, and in doing so you increase your skill set.  Meh, it kinda sounds traditional MMO with no combat, now that I say it.  But there has to be something that can be done to bring people together in a completely ad hoc way, so that relationships get founded because in my opinion it's the relationships that keep you logging back in.

  • I think you missed my point -- the very things you do that you feel avoid the grind in DDO could be someone else's definition of grind.  It's an even more ill-defined term than sandbox and theme park, and those two words have sparked thousands of pages of forum debate around the internetz.

So while you find Glitch grindy, I rarely feel like I'm grinding, and when I do, I just go do something else in the game or spend time goofing with friends.  Stating that Glitch is grind based and doesn't try to hide it is just nonsensical.   Grind is not a universal feeling that all will agree on for any given game.
Posted 5 months ago by Red Sauce Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yeah, learning skills is a very passive thing - I just know that it's always given me neat things to look forward to.
Posted 5 months ago by diaveborn ♥ Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I don't think I missed your point, I think I just ramble and express myself very poorly...  I'll try again, though!

Yes, grind is pretty much a given in any long term online game, and certainly there are many people that complain about the grind (including myself from time to time) in DDO.  And as you say, when you start to feel like you are grinding rather than playing, you turn to other aspects of the game (which may just be some other grind) and have a go at those for a while, spread yourself around doing different things, find something that catches your eye elsewhere and go for it.

What I find different with Glitch is that there is very little to do outside of grind, and the different forms of grind are painted with an extremely thin layer of paint, so that you don't even really feel like you are doing anything different when you turn to them.  This is strictly speaking about the skills based stuff you can do on your own in the game, of course.  The second compounding thing I find is that the social side of the game is underdeveloped from within the game itself.  It is very difficult to build relationships in the game in part because there is very little in the game that is conducive to group play.  For the majority of casual players, newcomers, etc. this means once they tire of the grind, they don't have the social aspect to turn to in order to alleviate it.

    Very wordy again... and I still can't be sure I've said what I mean.  There's a reason I'm a code monkey, I guess :)
Posted 5 months ago by Yohgi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm gonna get on the bandwagon here and echo that, generally speaking, if you're asking on Glitch if you should return to Glitch, fans are going to say yes. However, if you didn't find it fun before, you may not find it fun now. "Fun" is subjective, as is the term "grind", as others have said.

So ultimately, it's up to you. Log in and play for awhile, and see how you feel after that. In the end, that's going to be the deciding factor. It's not like you have to install anything to play Glitch, so taking the time to log in won't take up much of your time. It probably took longer to start a topic asking if you should come back.

  • I find myself, in large part, in agreement with Yohgi. Reasons for group interaction and benefits from group participate, puzzle-solving and complex strategy would be great boons to the game.
Posted 5 months ago by Pascale Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Pascale I've posted at least two random ideas for group if not team based mini game, and a mini team based puzzle type thing and they weren't widely accepted and faded into the background again. Maybe it's because I didn't use an eyecatching or witty title, but eh.

As for returning, do whatever you feel like doing. If you have friends and people you enjoy chatting with on here, then by all means come back. No one is making you come back if you don't want to except you.

  • Like a couple others have said, it's your choice if you want to come back or not. This is a game after all (you know, for your personal entertainment).  You won't win or lose anything with whatever decisions you make. You can always find another game to entertain you.
