Anyone else have a problem with this?

http://www.glitch.com/auctions/item-blue-white-hexagon-key/

Essentially one player having a monopoly on a given item and selling for exorbitant price.
I'm sure this isn't the only example but here's, 20 lots of 10 white and blue hexagon keys sold for 749 currants.

  • These pop up about every 5-7 minutes or so in Sinig Safes, so it's not hard to get one. They likely won't sell at that price, or any price for that matter unless someone is really desperate.

  • Ummm...you can't have a monopoly if you don't control the supply. Since these spawn at a given rate from the nodes anyone can pick them up for free. I have several of them sitting in my inventory now since they respawn pretty quickly.
I can sell grain in the auction house for 749 currants/10. And put up 100 auctions. Will anybody actually buy it? Probably not. Because they can just go squeeze a chicken...

  • So you're calling me a sucker for buying too much for what is essentially a free good? Even if it's not a monopoly, I still think it's still a sleazy thing to do.

  • 749 for 10?  they used to be 2k for 10

  • Players can get or make any item in game that is available in the auctions. Users put items up for whatever price they want and others can choose to buy it for instant gratification or put in the work to get/make it themselves. There is no cap on what one chooses to auction ones item for. It's not a monopoly because plenty of other keys are out there, it's just that no one has put them up for auction. It's not that crazy of a price either, 75C per key with a deduction for commission and listing fee. They probably sell to the vendor for 40, so he/she would be making a reasonable profit.

  • This person spent time collecting these keys and now is selling them at auction. It's not different than people who sell whole stacks of grain or beans or any other free harvestable item.

  • I echo elf, those things used to sell for 2k+ for one key.

  • wow, that is right, they used to be 2k a pop...i'd forgotten

go camp and hoard 40 of them, then you will never worry about a key again

mining sucks anyway, go collect meat if you need cash, sell in cebarkul, smoke cigars

    /and vote moosen

  • It's a key to Kristal Kaos (nothing to do with mining… AB and Neva Neva are Teal-White Triangles). Who cares?

  • Maybe they are like a lot of us right now - cleaning house!
I know I've been clearing out piles of stuff from my old house to make the move a lot easier.

  • Nobody's calling you a sucker - but this is not sleazy at all.

Sometimes you'll only see one seller of a good because they've set a higher price point, and all the less expensive auctions went first.  There's really no way this can be considered a monopoly. Any one of us can pick this key up quite easily - it's a frequent spawn. I agree the seller is probably just cleaning out his/her house of hoarded items :)

eta: I suppose they could sell for that price because Kristel Kaos is kind of a fun party place. It has a hot tub.

  • That's not a bad price for that key!  Thanks for letting me know, I think I'll buy some :D

  • monopoly: as others have said, it's not a monopoly because the seller doesn't control the supply.
In fact, this game is the opposite of a monopoly as everyone has equal access to the source of goods.

Here's a very simple way to lower the price: camp the key spawn location and collect a bunch of those keys, then sell them on the AH for less.  What; you don't want to spend your time doing that? Well, maybe that's why they sell on the AH...

  • No issue here.  In fact, when scrambling to get a cache of keys for The Amazing Race, i bought a ton of them, mostly from one seller, at sometimes almost twice that price.  Good for me, not having to key camp...good for them, making some money.  The ones i had left over I put up all at once at a reduced rate to get them out of my inventory.  If you had linked to the auction a few days ago, you might have assumed *I* was running a monopoly--ya never know the circumstances behind a listing.  They may have spent a ton of time collecting the keys or a ton of keycutter tonic making them.

  • Meh, fair enough- y'all convinced me. I guess I just got pretty grumpy because usually I can buy ONE key for a hefty price. What the bean am I going to do with 10 keys?

More grumping (panties especially twisty today). Gotta vent:

Obviously I can get a key for free but what if I don't have one on hand when I want it? I have to either abandon the option of unlocking a door (where's the fun in that?), or buy one off the Auction. Hence my initial frustration.

If I take the responses I've gotten here literally: assuming I'm not out finding/saving keys from all over Glitch, it's not exactly practical to find a door then think, "Hm, blue and white key? Oh yeah...where did I see those regenerate..." ::teleport::

    Derp!
