Sorry, TS but for the first time.

I have been playing Glitch since the end of alpha and the first beta.  For the first time I am unable to press that I would  recommend Glitch to my friends, button, I am now saying NO.  The card system stinks, I have spent over a million img and still, cannot get cards that are relevant, to what you say, I now need.  Are the skills that we have done not worth anything anymore?. I do not want to spend 20,000 img to speed up learning times, what am I learning? only the one new skill that appeared.  They are all I seem to get and why do I have 3 of them there at the same time? I have to use the one shuffle to change the cards that were there at the end of the last ur day.  Where are the gems and the bonus items we used to get?  even buying the cards, doesn't seem to help much.  Up to now I have loved the changes you have done, the housing,  fox's and the sloths.

  • I just wonder why we have to be forced to play the game over again, when months were already spent getting skills, it seems odd.

I filed bug reports about the amount of iMG i got, and guess what? they were deleted, so now I feel like this is more of a waste of time than ever.  Glitch lost its excitement a long time ago for me.

Learning things I already knew and having to blow what iMG I was given to do it - really REALLY stupid.

  • That's not the card system, that's the conversion system.  Seriously, that deserves to repeated as often as possible.

Original launch was seven months ago -- we are now attempting to fit seven months of "leveling" into a 48 hour period, in a system that is balanced for those seven months.  Yes, the random bit is going to make it a bit slower to get what you want -- but not if you started from the beginning and worked your way to the present naturally.  I have to agree with Stoot -- why spend time and development resources easing a conversion that will only happen this one time and will never apply to any player ever again?  I note that you like housing -- would you rather they be developing a temporary non-random method of upgrading for their beta players or finishing what needs be done before the housing launch?  I vote housing launch, personally.

But!  And this is also very important to note, someone asked if they could have an iMG refund from buying one of those learning speed upgrades, after realizing they didn't "need" it, and while he or she was told no, the person was also told that future skill releases will sort into these categories.  So not purchasing these speed upgrades is very short-sighted, as I suspected and have repeated elsewhere -- I expect when new skills release we will see forum angst from those that avoided these "useless" upgrades upset because now they are not drawing them, and others are learning faster than they are.  Buy them.  Buy all of them.

According to Stoot, it will only take about 100k iMG to expand your yard and street fully and that will leave you with some left over.  You can't trade iMG, you can't sell it for currants, there's no point in hoarding it.  Spend it.  You'll be much happier when you do.

This is a minor, short-term annoyance, yes, but just think how far ahead of the game we are than the people who will be starting when they open it back up.

If you don't like it, leave. Nobody is stopping you.

  • You were given that imagination because you learned those skills and spent that time in game elf, not to just look at and say oooh pretty.  Spend it.  What are you holding onto it for?  You can make 100k iMG in two games days just from donations -- and that's not counting everything you would earn from preparing those donations -- what are you worried about happening if you spend it?

You still have all your skills.  If you feel they were taken from you, if you feel they are useless, then take the challenge I mentioned off-hand in my blog.  Unlearn them all and go do those same tasks and tell me they are the same without the skills as they were with the skills.  They won't be.  Some of the benefits were moved to upgrades, but that's precisely WHY you were given iMG -- to grab the benefits you want while maintaining your ability to choose not to get them if they are activities you no longer care about.  If you  spend, you will find you actually have more abilities than you did before the game closed for this update.

But if you're no longer excited about Glitch, then move on.  I have friends incredibly committed to Glitch that never post in the forums -- there's certainly no reason for you to hang around and poison the well if you're no longer excited by the game.  Areanet seems to have its share of players that hang around the GW forums spreading poisonous little half truths, to the point where their CMs now actually have permission to just tell you off for a post like this.  And so do their writers and artists, as I learned from GW2 gravemarkers: http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/2.jpg

Why don't you want too? That's why they were given to you  and you didn't have to work for them as new players will have to.

Spending them puts you back into the position you were before. What else would you do with them? Sure, you will need some for expanding your house when you are reset but that is allowed for too. Stoot has said that 100,000 iMg  will put you into the same position as the biggest 50k current Ur house.

  • So, if someone doesnt have your opinion about things, dont say anything?

That sounds like a good idea. I have some very special words for you.

  • That's not what I said at all.  But what you are saying is not true, and you say you don't even care about the game . . . so why should you be allowed to cause anxiety and stress in players who may read your misconceptions?

You do not have to learn things you already learned.  You do have to spend the iMG you were given to do it . . .. but that's why you were given iMG.  What exactly are you waiting for?

I now mine with no difference from before but have a higher chance of getting gems, less wear on my pick, and a chance for the rock to immediately reappear as "huuuuuuge." When I hatch an egg, I might get two animals.  When I harvest trees, I practically get a super harvest every time, and the value of the super harvest is 3x higher for me than it was prior to the update -- meaning I'm almost always getting 96 units from a single tree instead of the 24 - 48 (on the slim chance of back to back super harvests).  I earn about 4x more energy or mood when I focus my meditation.  I can radiate more to my friends.  I can do things that no one in the game could before this update.  And I still have 700k iMG.

No, with the iMG you are sitting on plus your skills, you have more "power" in the game world than you did before, if only you would take the time to actually explore the system.  But if you're not going to explore the system, and do not want to play the game, then no, I do not think you should hang around the forums repeating things that are not true.  I have had to calm enough freaked out people in the update feed and on my facebook page who are reading these types of blatantly not true comments and taking them to heart.

But if you are going to post in the forums, I'll be here, and so will the other reasonable and rational players, to tell you you're wrong.  It's not a matter of opinion.  You are wrong.  You are better off than you were when they closed the game world.  You're just not taking advantage of what you've been given.

  • Just to jump in here...it's kind of silly to say someone is wrong, when their game experience isn't the same as yours. For me, since the reset. A lot of things suck now. This 96 harvest? I read that as fanciful. I get less now from trees than I did before. That's harvests, super harvests and bonus stuff. Same with mining, which has always been a PITA for me.

The cards are cute, but let's not pretend were are not buying back skills we already had. If you leveled up fast, then you have the iMG to spend. For  rest of us, we're limited.

  • Dear Miss Melody, I hope you will decide to stay and enjoy the game. The new card system is very random, which means that some people will initially have very good luck with it and others unusually bad luck, but over the long run everything will even out.  I just finally got a Maniac Mining 2 upgrade card after having bought 128 other upgrades I cared much less about, and only now will I have a chance at the MM3 card. On the other hand, much of the imagination I spent getting here has come back to me thanks to the generous super harvests making me rich enough to super-donate to every shrine. And I get a big chuckle from walking by a sloth tree and getting a few snails thrown down to me. And meditation is all of a sudden really worth doing again, thanks to my new upgrades. So I am happy even if I still have to wait for some of what I want.

I too regret the poisonous atmosphere sometimes seen here in the forums, not so much because of people expressing their wishes and disappointments as because of the really offensive response by a few folks to any apparent criticism no matter how mild. I would like to point out that one of the actual guidelines in our CG is "Make Glitch A Welcoming Place." Creating and sustaining a community is important here. I was touched by the sensitivity and good humor of stoot's response to my lament about my lost mining skill. He could have responded with insults and intolerance, but he did not. I hope others who post in these forums will try to act a little bit more like stoot.

///ETA, at the time I wrote this one of the previous posters had posted what I considered a truly nasty and inhospitable rant about dissatisfied ex-players who hang out in game forums trying to poison the well for others and urging the OP to leave. That is the kind of talk my post was in response to, not the much more peaceful and even informative explanations that have now replaced the rant to which I objected. Well done with those changes.

  • As a relatively new player to Glitch, the iMG system has brought in loads of new things for me to do. I don't have as much iMG as other people and so I spend iMG as I go and a lot of the features are pretty neat.

I wouldn't mind, however, if some element of control was brought into this totally chance-driven card system. The idea itself is interesting, but it doesn't feel like it really 'fits' into the whole Glitch universe. For instance - your skills are learned by having your familiar Rock study them? That makes sense. The cards seem a bit out of place, despite how I feel about them. It can get a bit annoying when you're dealt lots of expensive Energy Tank cards and other upgrades that you really aren't interested in buying - yes, I can just buy them and get them out of the way, but now that I'm running on no more than 10,000 iMG at a time, I realize I have to 'budget' my iMG accordingly too, so that changes how I pick my upgrades.

Random ideas: A 'slot machine' mechanic that allows you to try to get a card you want! Combines the element of chance with some player control and/or skill. It would be nice if things were explained in a way that makes them seem more fitting in the world of Glitch, too.

  • What Dotcom said.

I've only been able to play for about 2 hours since the Img system arrived and am still learning how things work, so it will take awhile...My suggestion Miss Melody is to wait until the final R2 happens and then play for 3-5 hours and see were you are there.

And as always, let your innerGlitch be your guide.

  • @Jarhaven FWIW The 96 harvest thing is actually not fanciful. I got "Beanier Harvest", "Bubblier Harvest" and "Spicier harvest" upgrades earlier today and suddenly started getting a yield of 96 for almost every bean/bubble/spice tree I harvested (although I don't know if it is sustained). I suspect there are pre-requisite upgrades for these but I'm not sure what they are.

  • I've played for 7 months and only recently hit 60.  I didn't level fast at all.  But you're right, it's a different game, and that's why they went back to beta and offered full refunds -- it was planned to be a different game, and what do you know, it's a different game.  You can't sit outside the game and just learn skills and gain tons of power without playing anymore.  You may have spent as much time out of game learning, but you haven't spent as much time in game playing, and the game now rewards the latter as much if not more than the former.  Considering the criticisms I've seen around the net about just that bit, this will please more than it will upset.

If you really feel you're buying back skills you've already learned, then go unlearn those skills.  They still provide benefits.  You would be even worse off without them.  Go try it, and you'll see.  Some even provide new benefits -- Mining III never reduced wear on your mining tool, but it does now.  And I can clearly look at elf's profile page, and see that he or she has not purchased a single upgrade despite having level 30 iMG, so what exactly is this person's game experience?  Making stuff up in the forum?  Repeating misconceptions that other people have put in the forum?

I do hope if any of you that are upset tell your friends not to play this game because of the horrible, terrible thing they did to you in beta, that someone else ends up talking them into trying it anyway.  Because they will never understand your issue, and they will never have your problems.  They will learn skills, unlocking new upgrade cards, and play to earn iMG to grab those upgrade cards -- and they will never share the feeling that something they were entitled to was taken away.  As stoot said playing with someone else's metaphor, mom didn't donate your favorite t-shirt to Goodwill.  She folded it and put it in a drawer with a whole bunch of new clothes, and though it's not on the floor next to your bed anymore, you will find it if you try, and you will find the newer, better stuff too.  Play, earn, unlock.

You've been transferred from one system to another system.  That's it, nothing was taken away, it was changed.

Dotcom, if you're addressing me with "really offensive response to apparent criticism no matter how mild" then you don't follow my posts very closely.  First, while I might wiggle on some posts in the past, I stand firm that I have posted nothing offensive here.  A friend just said in an in game chat moments ago to joke about how pleasant I'm being toward statements that would normally unleash what we sometimes call my "naked hot fury."  But at least in my case, I only respond to falsehoods and scenarios that people create inside their heads and then get upset over.  I have, myself, posted criticism.  I have, myself, made suggestions.  I have, myself, even been irritated with the conversion.

But there's a difference between "criticism" and "saying stuff that isn't true while screaming that it is true," and as I've told students a million times, there is nothing offensive about telling someone they are wrong when they are wrong.

if there's anyone creating an unwelcoming environment, it's the people spreading misinformation, and especially the ones that aren't even trying or playing and spreading misinformation.  I had a friend who wouldn't even log in for the first 24 hours based entirely on things that never happened, just because she didn't want her stress level to rise.  That's not very welcoming now is it?

  • katlazam, that is not at all what I read by Saucelah and company.  They have provided a detailed run down of how the new system works, and pointed out where the OP's original impressions may be incorrect.  I did not once read a command to "shut up".

  • I don't mince words.  Elf is wrong and hasn't even tried to see otherwise.  To claim he is not wrong and knows better is irrational.  I do think anyone that has these characteristics on top of saying they no longer play should just go away.

In response to my blog post critical of the conversion, Stoot said: " Those are good points, all. I think you will get your upgrades faster than you think (you can afford to buy your way through stacks of them). HOWEVER, we gotta design for the future and most players won't ever get to your position ... they'll get the mining upgrades shortly after they get the mining skills."

That's a big "however" for a reason.  The future isn't upset beta testers who do not play.  The future is the players who won't ever experience what these players are complaining about.  What exactly do you expect Tiny Speck to do now?

  • I've been playing for two days and I think the iMG system is really fun. I've spent most of my playing time so far running around trying to earn more iMG so I can get some cool upgrades.

I've been following the forums and global chat discussions about it, which is fun! Even as a new player it's not hard for me to agree with Saucelah, it pretty much comes down to basic common sense.

It seems like the possible choices for the iMG conversion were:

    a) make everybody less powerful and give them iMG to make up for it
    b) leave everybody at the same level of power AND give them iMG to make themselves even more powerfuls
    c) not give anyone any iMG and make them less powerful

    (a) is what happened, and it seems to me like the people who are complaining wanted it to be (b), which I guess is too bad. People aren't really any worse off than before, and now they have an opportunity to become much more powerful than beforehand.

To say that this is a reason to discourage new players is just incredibly stupid, as a new player I *love* this system and it's really fun for me to customise my character in small increments like this.

I am kind of surprised by the community though, the level of discussion here is pretty low. I mean, responding to someone's reasoned, thought-out criticism with "you're being mean and offensive, omg", instead of refuting what you disagree with, is pretty childish and embarassing.

It is a big change, and it has only been 2 days. Take a breath and give it at least a week before declaring it cr*p.

  • I like the upgrade cards a lot, it removes some of the "cookie cutter" feel from the game.  I also like that we have to actually *do* stuff to advance.  For me, to be given everything on a plate would not be an enjoyable gaming experience.

I think that the new player experience will be vastly improved with these changes.  I am very tempted to start a brand new character so that I can have the fun of working towards specific goals, having to actually manage my iMG,  and playing with a peer group where we are not all built exactly the same (as a result of the old afk learning without the upgrade cards).

    Great job, TS !!

  • The few do not speak for the many.  If someone gives one negative and 5 positives, speaking for just myself...I'll walk away thinking about the negative until I shake myself and realize the positives that were spoken.  The silent ones speak volumns.  We could have been all reset to the beginning which would have given TS lots less work, lots more time to test the "glitches" but for the dedicated, TS wrote the conversion, warned us of the changes and have given us an opportunity to play their new game.  Yesterday I had luck with me and drew fabulous cards, today not so much, actually not at all...ebb and flo...I'm going with the flow.  The game will evolve to my style of playing, what I enjoy most but this new game encourages me to go out and see the worlds..embarrassingly enough some streets I haven't been to in over 233 days.  I'm thrilled, I'm challenged and delighted.  I do agree with SS, the negatives here do get to me, but I'm gonna get over myself and not worry and do my job as a Beta and play to my hearts content and along the way help anyone who needs it and give them a lift if they need it too.

Edited to add:  By the way, to the player who felt the need to take my collectors and feeders.  You could have asked.  I'm sorry you did that but I refuse to let you ruin my day.  I've learned my lesson and oh by the way, I have a long long memory and I do have the feeling I know who you are.  Sorry you felt the need to do that and leave rainbows in their place.

  • We have to remember that we are complete oddities in Glitch at the moment. It may feel weird and/or awkward at the moment, but that is because we are currently not playing the game the way it is supposed to be played. No-one should be able to amass over 2mil iMG in one day. Please try not to judge how the game feels now, because it is extremely odd - but also it's a temporary.

The biggest hump I've had to get over is not spending the iMG. Please, everyone who isn't liking it, please just get into the game and spend everything you have. It's not very hard to amass more and there is no reason to save it. It's there to do things for you; let it do those things. The more iMG you spend, the easier it becomes to get more. And if you need to work for a few days doing stuff to get more, that's even better! There are Glitchian things to do. Go forth and do them!

Then come back and tell us what your opinion is.

P.S. Remember, we're oddities. We're not supposed to exist. Once you imagine yourself back to where you were (and more), the game will function the way it's "supposed" to - which is to say, awesomely fun.

  • This is a forum. There will be and should be differences of opinion as well as negative and positive feedback. The Glitch forums are more civil then most, however I have detected in the past, and see multiple instances of it now, where people who are expressing how their game play has been impacted are getting ostracized. I don't think this is appropriate. The game is experiencing major changes and people should be free to express how they are feeling, whether others "like" it or think that what is being said is "wrong" or "right." Yes, its beta, its new and yes we need patience. Ultimately, they may decide at the end that the "new" Glitch is not as fun as they hoped. But surely, having the community tell them they are wrong to think it isn't the way to go. Everyone's game play is personal to them, given their interests and the amount of time they have to play. If you think a comment is negative, post your positive and move on. But don't, please, publicly berate someone because they have a different view from yours.

While I disagree with the OP about the game and completely agree with the responses given to the initial criticism, more than anything I feel strongly about this quote and the echos of it in other posts.

Forums are meant to be a place where people can freely and openly express their opinions and concerns, even if mistaken, wrong or just from out of left field.   I strongly support free speech.

Isn't this exactly what you're doing?

Person A posts some criticism of Glitch
Person B posts some thoughts about that criticism
Person C, D, E, F, jump in to complain that since person B responded to person A in a completely polite and respectful way,  person B is mean, rude, impolite, and is "poisoning the well".

Like you said, there's nothing wrong with posting opinions. So I don't see why people are getting so upset about people posting opposing opinions. There's nothing offensive or hostile about having a different point of view.

Again, you support free speech, so please explain what exactly is so wrong with someone posting their point of view about the topic in response to someone else's? Or are discussion threads on Glitch meant to be only echo chambers?

  • Saucelah, you're long-winded and a bit tl;dr, but I think I agree with you.

I was annoyed about the iMG system at first, but once I realized how quickly iMG can be replaced, I got over it and started buying upgrade cards. And yes, it is irritating to see three 100k+ brain capacity cards on the table at the same time and not need/want to buy them. So what do I do? I get over it. I go explore Ur. I do the things I was doing three days ago, but now instead of getting XP, I'm regaining a lot of the iMG I spent to finally get my mining time back down to 4 seconds. Along the way I've picked up quoin multipliers, so I'm getting about 10 whatevers more per quoin than I used to.

    And I'm having fun.

Yes, the conversion is painful, but we are TS's guinea pigs here. That's the whole point of being a beta tester. You know, to test.  The OP's points are valid, but from a game design perspective, they don't really matter much. New players won't be able to compare the old and new styles, so while I support Miss Melody's right to express her opinions, I don't see TS reverting to the previous system.

  • i feel you miss melody. it is frustrating to find your abilities to be diminished only to have to slog through purchasing a bunch of random cards or be bottlenecked by only 3 choices a game day to get back to your previous state. a little consideration with easing us through this transition couldve gone a long way. especially for those who have put a large amount of time, effort and money into their characters as well as this game. im sure people wouldve greatly appreciated a grace period of multiple reshuffles in a game day and to be given information about what cards were available beforehand. but im also sure TS didnt intend to frustrate or alienate people and what we're experiencing is growing pains and temporarily setback.

i myself am not thrilled at the randomness of our upgrade choices, particularly as a former lv.60 player with a massive pool to draw from, but it does add a new interesting element that frankly the game desperately needed.

TomC has generously compiled a list of upgrades and their prices on Glitchium that can help you out. you can also buy reshuffle cards on the auction though they are ridiculously priced at the moment.

  • Listen, no one is trying to poison the well.  We *want to have fun! I assume that is fairly universal.
People have listed reasons they are not having fun.
Other people have listed ways that can be resolved.
It is awesome when people listen to that information, and find "oh gosh, it can be fun"
It is frustrating when the responses are "But that isn't fair or fun"
It is even more frustrating when the people who are claiming it isn't fun or fair -- have not even tried.

I GET that it would be frustrating to not get THE card you want.
I admit that I am lucky to have gotten all of the cards I am interested in. But you know what? I have 34,165 Img left, because I spent to get it.
Why on earth would I keep it? It isn't going to help me "level" It already did that when I earned it. It isn't XP. It is Imagination. It IS for spending.
And, now that I have spent it all..and have a crap ton of upgrades, I have better skills to be able to earn even more, to save to SPEND on the housing updates.

When I did not have the ones I wanted, or the one I had was bugged, I did other things.
It had been a long time since I had been out exploring, or really even loved up on a tree. 96 HARVESTS! I LOVE LOVE LOVE trees now!
Chickens.. meh, I admit they suck. But they suck for all of us.. so why does that matter?
Meditating? I really never bothered before, the 12 or whatever boost I got was not worth it. Now? SUPER worth it.
    Levitating is fun now.
Herbs give me more Herb stuff. I like Herbs a lot more currently.

I am running around doing things I did not do, or had long stopped doing. It IS FUN.

I understand that it is  be harder at lower levels or with a lower skill set. I have friends who are struggling. But the struggle is more interesting than it was.
AND it will be MUCH more interesting to new people coming into the game.

I think it is hard for me, personally, to watch the *way people are complaining, because it feels like people are saying TS should *not have done this.
The game is *not live. They decided to take the game in this direction, and worked to do it, in the most fair way possible... while NOT doing the DREAD RESET!
They warned us. They offered refunds. They let us keep our junk. They gave us ways to make it even better than before.

If the complaints are about frustrations, I get that. If the comments are suggestions about how to make the game better, I get that.

A lot don't feel that way. That is frustrating for a lot of us.

    That is all.

  • @ Sideburns

I can't believe you would complain about people's complaints!

    J/K

I am right there with ya. Adapt or watch those who have adapted pass by.

  • Just as well I read this forum before adding my acrimonious 2 cents to the conflagration.  I listened to you Sauselah , about not saving IM points. After some thought decided what the heck and started buying upgrades, LOTS of upgrades. What a difference. The 33 day FM II learning was suddenly 22 days,  mining is a bit faster. Due to RL interruptions, I haven't tried harvesting much so have not idea how that will work. The game is now fun again.

  • If you dont like to hear my opinion then don't read what I post.

I think its stupid to have to do things over again, if you want to waste your time on it, then enjoy.  I can't see the point in wasting that time.

That is my opinion and it is not wrong.  I feel sorry for you if you are that confused to think that my opinion is wrong.

  • Elf, I strongly recommend you try spending your iMG before completely writing off the game. Once you start spending it, it's super easy to earn it back. In three days, I've already made back around 100K of it, because I've spent iMG on upgrades, and others have earned much much more (at least 400K, as there are some level 43s running around now). It's not like XP - there is no need to hoard it - it does not take away from your level or anything else.

I hope you give it a try.

  • That's a good suggestion Kristen: if one was just going to pack it up and quit anyway, it might be worth spending all their imagination first — that way they can at least see what the game is like now.

  • I'm not sure that doing things over again is the most apt way to understand the change, elf. You don't have to do anything over again - you already have the means to re-gain what you had before. You simply have to spend the iMG that you were given already to get them back. TS calculated very carefully what everyone would need to do exactly that and gave it to everyone.

    Think of it like this:

Suppose you purchased 10 Birch Candies for 10 xp. TS stepped in and said, "Okay we're doing things differently now. We're taking back 3 Birch Candies, but in return we're giving you enough of the new currency (iMG) to regain those 3 Candies - OR any other shiny new things as well. You get to make the choice!"

If you haven't yet tried it, please play the game for a bit and spend that iMG that you received. If it still isn't better for you, come back and say so. I can't help but think that your opinion (even if it isn't wrong, per se) is certainly a bit uninformed if you haven't yet tried the things yet.

ETA: Good onya, Kristen Marie! Good post - and fast, too! :D
