Scavenger Hunt Help

I've seen several scavenger hunts (even geocaching) being posted to the forums.

They almost always come with the caveat, "as long as the notes/clues last..."

I did a hastily put-together scavenger-hunt type thing in the last issue of The ImaginatUr.  I hid the final clue somewhere and wrote on the note to send the note back to me to get the prize.  Within 10 minutes someone IM'd me (so, #1, my clues were WAY too easy!!) and said that there was nothing in the final location.  Within about 10 minutes of publishing the issue, someone had already come across my final note and took it.  They did not find it by clues because I used a fortune cookie to hide the last clue and my IM'er found it intact.

So the guy would have won, but wasn't able to return the note to me because someone just took it.

This world of Ur is full of fantastic hiding places and seems just made for scavenger hunt type games.  Unfortunately, the clues are often taken by people that aren't playing the scavenger hunt, (for whatever reason) thus ruining the fun.

Is there a way to accommodate those of us who like setting up these scavenger hunts?  Is there a way to make clues stick somehow?  Open them with a password?  I don't know.  I didn't say I had a good solution.  :)  Does anyone else have one?

  • I agree with this too.  I wish scavenger hunts were easier to run... that is, if there were a way to safeguard our notes for x amount of time during a hunt.  I hate that people can just steal then notes and sell them, thus ruining everyone else's fun.  The staff should also regulate public posting of answers to clues, as someone did that and thus ruined a chunk of one of the hunts I ran.  It made the whole thing leave a sour taste in my mouth and even though I've had lots of positive feedback, I've stopped running hunts for now as people steal stuff early into the game.
