  • The magic rock is the rock guy at the top of your screen who gives you the quests.

  • LOL! Sounds familiar. I didn't know at first and had to research it. Made me feel kind of stupid.

  • I can't say that I am in favor of pop up clues or anything else that guides or advises freely. Part of the reason I keep returning to Glitch is the freedom (and ignorance) of unadulterated learning about this awesome world. Without guidance, I was left with trial and error, chance, luck, intuition, helpful fellow players and just some plain old head scratching gear grinding. Yes, I would have gotten things done sooner, made more money and be higher in the stats, but my $10,000 house, emblems and trophies are the results of my own hard work. The beauty of playing an open no rules based game. They said it would be fun, nobody said it would be easy :)

  • I agree with coolbettycakes. You can always get help if you ask, or spend some effort searching the forums or the wiki. The game doesn't need to automatically be dumbed down for everyone.

  • Ditto what the 3 above said...And besides, we have our innerGlitch to guide us along the way!

  • Serendipity is such an underrated game feature.

  • Ditto what the above 4 said, as well as another reason...that would just make quests WAY too easy, and the game would get boring, quick. You said it would help get more quests done - well, that probably wouldn't be a good thing. I mean, IMHO, the quests are at a great pace already - people are rarely COMPLETELY stumped on them, and if they are, they can always rely on the help channel. I think needing help from other players encourage the game to be more social.

  • It would be awesome if there was a way to get a hint if you needed it, not sure if it would be at all feasable to build in, but might help some people from getting frustrated. I felt like I had a great advantage when I started since I had a large group of Glitch friends who were also former FS players. It wasn't embarassing to ask a question if I didn't know what to do. For a new player starting out they might feel a little funny, but hopefully they would soon realize that most of the players are helpful and willing to answer questions.

  • I think the general point is really "don't be afraid to ask for help in the help channel".

However, I think there's not a lot of direction towards the chat channels for new players. Maybe reminders? Maybe there could even be a quest of sorts to show you how to use chat? Obviously it would be irritating if a particular channel was swamped with questees, but you could open a private channel to a non-player character just for demonstration purposes.

  •  I don't need clues just more quests. All mine are done untill the really long skills are finished learning. There also mostly done. So sat there mostly twiddling my thumbs :(

@warzel if you choose to be greeted in game as you enter we tell all noobs about the chat channels/help etc Being greeted is a fairly new approach to getting started with Glitch.

  • Yeah, Misha, I didn't go through the whole greeting thing.

But I think early on in the game, there's a HUGE amount of new information that hits new players. Only some of it gets repeated. Poster #2 can't work out what the rock is, for example, possibly because they skipped past some of the early dialogue or whatever. No harm in reminding people about stuff in a non-invasive way.

  • People who need help/spoilers with quests might want to be aware of the existing fan-run wiki: http://www.glitch-strategy.com/wiki/Glitch_Wiki

Personally I'm a favor of not putting too many clues and handholding in games and letting people look off-site for clues if they need them.

  • The thing at the top could be a sponge for all new players know. Maybe the quest could say find the magic rock on your screen.
