Glitch losing it's magical community? :/

It just occurred to me.. long gone are the days of BETA, that the community seems to be going down-hill..
I mean in the global chat there's people that will troll, curse or make references to 'naughty glitches'. Just now in the auction I bought a tinkery-thingy and well.. 0/200 uses.. feel a bit mugged-off really. Around the place there are people that'll shout out well.. stuff that isn't really 'user-friendly'..

So I'm thinking, after just a few weeks and the community is already getting worse.. what'll it be like in a few months/years?

  • Months? Probably worse, but years, I think by then the community will be better. The players who are here to grief and harass will steadily lose interest and those left will be people who actually want to play the game. So it might get worse short term, but in the long run things will work out.

  • I think we all expected this once the game goes live, but I think if we all keep a positive attitude the trolls and meanies will lose interest and eventually the community will end up being even stronger!

  • After opening the doors to anyone ofcourse the community is going to go downhill, do you not wonder why any high-class community IRL isn't open to the general public?

With Global Chat disappearing it should get rid of one problem.

I'm guessing that soon we'll start to see more independent websites starting communities so that they themselves can moderate what goes on. I'm not sure if it's implemented yet (i'm new'ish) but i'd love to see invite-only groups, kind of like guilds i guess.
Posted 15 months ago by Kamwah Subscriber! | Permalink
  • You can set a group you create to private, invite-only. You can also set it to public, pending approval, as well.

I don't ever go into global chat, and I generally don't notice most Glitches around me, so I guess I've not experienced any of this really.

  • Really Giggles? O ok then. Well then the foundation is there for someone, how are the owners privileges for groups? Can he remove people?

I wish the forums had stickys (I wish it was a regular-style forum tbh) it'd be good for a thread of all the community groups.

  • We're in the middle of an exciting, crazy time. Glitch is currently the cool new restaurant with lineups down the block, but things should calm down some as time goes on.

There will be some weirdie bits, and some annoying things, but eventually we'll find a new equilibrium. It's early days yet, so be stout of heart, keep an eye out for the neat new folks that are joining, and we'll get there.

  • Yup. I have a private, invite-only group; I don't think it even shows up if you search for it. I assume when people have public, pending acceptance groups, that anyone can apply, but they most be approved by whomever has the power. As far as getting rid of members, you can kick them from the group as well as ban them.

The Administrator of a group can do everything and can choose who can:

    1) Invite
    2) See a list of members
    3) View the Messageboard
    4) Post new topics on the messageboard
    5) Post replies to topics on messageboard
    6) Can approve applications
    7) Can promote members
    8) Can demote members
    9) Can kick/ban

It looks like to choose those things, you create new member types and adjust what those member types can do, then grant that membership level to those you want to be able to do such things.

  • One other thing to keep in mind is that alot of us new people haven't had the same community experience yet that all the beta and alpha-types had.  As someone who joined shortly after official launch (so, only a few days ago), I've not seen a ton of real community outside of a few pockets.  There's a few neighborhood groups that seems to be doing things, a surprisingly well organized community of griefers ;) and then a lot of old-timers lamenting that the game has too many new people.

Communities need to be nurtured, and, as others have said, it takes time.  Glitch seems to be a really solid social platform, and it lends itself well to interaction.  Once people get bored digging and mining and harvesting, they'll look to those aspects of the game for a deeper experience (I know I have).  The world has had one heck of a shock with reset and new people streaming in and trying to figure it all out.  I can see it on every beta- and alpha-tester's face.  But, it'll work out, man.  It always does. :)

  • What most people have said here is right. AND, it has only been six days since launch!! It will take some time to settle down, but from where I sit, the community seems as strong as ever.

  • lol, stri, was sort of thinking same.  When I recall some of the insane threads that got going while the game was down (and some recent ones too), "magical" isn't the word that comes to mind...

ETA: I thought that tools all showed how many uses were left in an auction posting, and besides, if you are doing the Repair a Tinkertool quest, 0/200 would be just the nut...
Posted 15 months ago by Nanookie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Magical/Special, I see the connection.
Posted 15 months ago by Kamwah Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Nanookie: Auctions hide a tool's wear and tear. You can even sell broken tools as new!

@GravityGrip: Bit of a stretch to make this into a sign of Glitch's declining community... This happened before (that's why I stopped buying tools in auctions) and would be relatively easy to fix by the developers.
Posted 15 months ago by Revilo Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @CaptainConfused. It's not exactly against the rules. And with the (usually) friendly world of Glitch you can often find someone to repair your tool for free :) No harm done.

  • Well personally I'm thrilled to see the community grow, but of course I also wish for it to grow the right direction. I remember the times of Beta where people were supportive and helpful in both chat and the different roads.

Now, however the mood has all changed. People are being rude in chat, obnoxious in the game and trying to exploit every part that they can. I even had someone trying to bully me into giving them the produce from a spice tree because it "was theirs".

Yes, with a launch like this things are bound to change dramatically. But as others voice; it'll hopefully decline as the buzz wears off and the hardcore gamers go back to playing their shooters etc.
Posted 15 months ago by Silly Sooth Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Silly Sooth - Now now, don't blame it on a group of people when theres not even any evidence that it is them ;)
Posted 15 months ago by Kamwah Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Kamwah, you mean the 'hardcore gamers' bit? Well sorry to generalize and all, but I had no other way of defining it. :)
Posted 15 months ago by Silly Sooth Subscriber! | Permalink
  • TBH it's mostly kids and hardcore trolls that are causing the problems.

Yea thats what I was referring to ;)
Posted 15 months ago by Kamwah Subscriber! | Permalink
  • You know, I blocked more people during beta for being rude or obnoxious than I have since the game opened up. Of course, it has only been six days so maybe next week I'll go on a blocking bender. I have found myself playing a much more social game since the reset both in game play and in chat. I think the game is now, as it always has been, what you make of it. I have had to adapt my game play to take into consideration the vast increase in players but that is good. I'm doing things now that I never did before and enjoying it.

  • Cursing isn't a problem. I've noticed a lot of people have had a problem with some of the things I've had to say, but tbh most of the stuff I've had to say has pushed limits but not been inherently bad. A lot of people imprison themselves with social norms and I tend to really rub them the wrong way when I choose to be free of those norms. Also, most of the time, when I talk about things in chat that seem to make people uncomfortable, I'm usually following up on something someone else has said...

ETA: I want to point out that I don't try to make people uncomfortable or to troll them, haha. But if someone has a problem with something I say and can't justify it beyond "THAT'S JUST THE WAY THINGS ARE AND YOU SHOULDN'T DO IT," well, I'm not so likely to stop saying what I'm saying. Again, the prime example of this is cursing. Who says "shit" is a bad word? Society. What makes it bad? Nothing aside from the fact that society says it's a bad word, without any good justification.

ETA II: I must say that I have found the general air of acceptance and support towards myself and other QUILTBAGgers to be quite positive, though. Of course there will always be idiots that try to ruin everything, but the best you can do is ignore them and brush it off. As I've said before, no use arguing with an idiot. The only one leaving the interaction changed will be you because all of their stupid will weigh heavily on your heart and mind.
Posted 15 months ago by Cerulean Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The goodness of Glitch is still here and will always remain.  Ignore the bad as much as possible.  The trolls and such thrive on reaction.

  • By hiding into own private groups the rest of the community won't participate in your community. You get separate comminuties. Like someone said, it has to be nurtured.
Don't hide from global chat, participate in it and take the lead into leading it to a nice, warm, strong community, instead of leaving it to fall to misery.
Newbies are, well, new. When I was new it took a while before I spoke, (don't you wish I was silent again now sometimes? ;) )
(Damn, smileys and parentheses, it still looks wrong.)
It took a while before I felt part of this community. Nurture the newbies, show them your community spirit, interact with them the way you would with your beta-friends, and hopefully they will adapt that behaviour if they don't have it yet, or they will feel free to express themselves like that too, or they feel assured it is ok to behave like they have been.
Then there won't be a THEM and WE anymore.
Currently lots of WE's sound less like the community I knew, meaning that they complain about newbies. (I don't mean the OP, just the general feeling). It is starting to feel like an elitist air, "we are better then them".

Ofcourse, now that the game is live more kiddies and unsocial people will join, but there will be many gems and jewels, and diamonds in the rough. And it's our job to find them and polish them so they will shine as bright as they can!
Let's go out there and gather some shinies! FOR THE GIANTS! FOR UR! FOR LIFE,LOVE, FAMILY AND FRIENDS, CHAAAAARGE!

..eh... I think I got a bit carried away there...

Posted 15 months ago by Stormy Weather Subscriber! | Permalink
  • OMJ not to derail the thread too much, but my friend and I went to Rite aid once and in their dollar section they had animal hats. One was a monkey but it had sort of come apart so that the only really visible part of the hat, when worn, was the "3" shape of the monkeys mouth, and of course it was a flesh color. I pointed out to my friend that we had officially found wearable asshats.

  • I tend to agree with the "downfall of society" here. I was a late beta tester - i only had 4 opening times until the start - but i still had a lot of unpleasant happenings the last few days. I'd never have thought that i had to actually get into my house and lock me in to reorganize my inventory. Because, if i don't, some idiot comes by, takes it and runs off. Which happened twice today.
Or someone telling me to "piss off" when i asked if they need help.

I just hope it will get better again... *sighs

  • by magical if you mean Gob and Buster dancing over a grave then yes. Yes. Such a magical community.
Posted 15 months ago by emdot Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Community going downhill? I don't see it. I'll give a few examples:
Example A: When I said that I needed a tinkertool for a quest, also that I'll return it, on a crowded street, someone immediately hands me one. I finish my quest and give it back.
Example B: There's a certain street in the Deeps where a bunch of miners gather. When a rock appears, all of them jump on it, and either mine or help mine. This system is fantastic, because when 10 or so Glitches help mine a rock, most of them get 30+ bonus rocks. Win-win.
Example C: While on the subway, someone commented on my censor bar, in a nice, joking way.You won't see that in a griefer riddled community, would ya?

So. I'm either really lucky, or the community is still quite nice.

  • Dramatic changes: People suggesting the killing off of spice trees, strangers knocking on doors and attempting to steal, Others who can't play well with others and feel it's ok to pick
something up that they know is not theirs and clearly belongs to the person standing right there...at least there is a fix for that, I mean if there is any question that an object is just there for the taking you should ask. What a difference one week has made. I hope that the people saying that things will settle down are correct. There is a book by Robert Fulgrum called
'Everything I need to know I learned in Kindergarten"....or something like that....might not be the exact title, but basic idea is please, thank-you, respect, courtesy....escentally treat others the way you would like to be treated. If those basics don't work well for some people there are plenty of games out there when they can fight, steal and play war and be agressive towards each. I believe the basic core values of this game are community, sharing and having fun are strong and will be maintained but right now it's just kind of sad to see
this negative approach some people seem to enjoy.

  • Please don't let the few ruin anything for you.  There are far more great people here than there are the not-so-great.  I don't read Global so I haven't had the pain.  I suspect that, as Stoot says, things will settle down in a bit.  Some people like to test to see what they can get away with.  Ignore them if you can.  They want attention, don't let them have it.  Group Chats are good and there will be less or no problems in them.

  • This game's community seems surprisingly  welcoming and friendly, compared to most MMOs I've known of, especially at launch. There will be hiccups here and there, and moments of distress, but that's natural. Things look very optimistic.

  • As a newbie, I have yet to see any of this outside of Global Chat (which is no surprise, every global chat is terrible). Now I've only really hung out in Pollokoo, but everyone there is nice and willing to help out to the best of their ability. Maybe it's because I'm so far from the starting zones?

  • I pay minimal attention to chat, though I've caught a couple of help requests. But the kind of trolling/behavior you speak of is nothing if they don't draw a reaction: no audience, no fun. The game itself is no fun if you're just around to bash people - no combat, no theft (absent snagging a gem that pops out while you're mining) ... so is a troll really going to stick around long-term just to be a jerk? Doubtful. (I mean, really - the cost of trolling is having an always cheerful rock giving you stuff to do.)

  • I talk in group chats and the community is still fantastic in them. Just need to be slightly more selective of the parts of the community you deal with I guess. There are lots of fantastic people around the place still, and plenty of lovely new people joining too, so it's just a matter of focusing on the good and not the bad for me.

Show me one other MMO where Global Chat has anything of value in it posted... well, pretty much -ever-. Here I've been able to find guidance and have a laugh, plus joining a couple of interest relevant groups has helped me find new like-minded friends very quickly.
