What causes distraction while meditating?
Or is it just random?

Do not move your mouse.
Be still, impatient Glitchen.
Shhhh, heed this haiku.

That's part of it -- most things you do like moving, manipulating your inventory, talking in chat will definitely distract you. Mousing around outside the play area and switching among the group chats you have open seem to be safe.
IMs will distract you, and the actions of other glitches or animals nearby can distract you too. I think that some buffs can be distracting, and some people have reported that mousing over animals and trees that pop up action bubbles distracts them.
There is or has been a bug that causes some glitches to be instantly distracted; if you find yourself repeatedly unable to meditate for even a second, reload and it clears up.

I'm grateful for all of these facts,
But confusion still falls through the cracks.
While alone in my house,
And not moving the mouse,
Still I don't often get "max relax".

Even in the best conditions there's a random chance of a distraction.

it's also random, you won't get max relax every time even without distraction

Fnibbit is incorrect on a couple of things here.
first of all, a fix was put in so that incoming IMs no longer distract.
secondly, the actions of nearby glitches or animals does not have any effect. i've extensively tested meditating in totally empty areas and then right by the busiest vendor in cebarkul and there was no perceivable difference.
people see chickens fly by as they get distracted, and because we have stupid human brains we ascribe a connection when it is just coincidence. then we exclusively meditate in calm areas where our assumption is never challenged.

Thanks for the info, striatic. I thought I was still getting distracted by IMs last night, so will keep an eye on that and see if it happens again. Based on what you've said, it shouldn't. Here's hoping!

If you are on a mood buff and you are focusing mood, if the buff gives you mood it will distract your meditation. If you are on a energy buff it will do the same thing if you are focusing energy meditation. If the buff pops energy or mood and you are focusing meditation on either of those two atm then it will distract your meditation. Make sense?
My hubby kept getting distracted. I could hear it in my livingroom. I asked him why he kept getting distracted during meditation and he said he didn't know. He couldn't figure it out. Then one day I said, did a buff just pop you some mood and your trying to meditate at the same time? Yup! That doesn't work, I told him!!

there are lots of things you can do whilst meditating though! I've just been doing a load of cooking and you can safely meditate whilst grinding, bubble tuning, cooking and eating. set the task going first, say grinding 100 pinches of salt, then whilst that's happening I start meditation too, without being disturbed. I assume it works with other actions too, like blending, making cocktails etc.

@striatic Incoming IMs do indeed distract, and that's by design.

In my experience, not only external distractions cause lower performing meditations, but also your initial health & mood stats going into it. I try to keep mood as high as possible w/focused when I have a lot of health to recover and eat to Max health before attempting to recover large chunks of mood. That way I don't prematurely hit zen

I've found I've gotten max relax more often while not moving the mouse.
