How much bandwidth does Glitch use?

I'm spending the summer at my parent's home, and they've recently had a bandwidth cap imposed by their ISP.  We have four people in the house, all who need the internet, so I'm having to be careful about my usage. Also, since we have four people on the connection, it's hard to monitor individual bandwidth use.  If anyone knows approximately how much bandwidth Glitch uses per hour of play, I'd really appreciate it!

  • If you happen to have a cell phone that has unlimited data or at least 2 gigabytes, you could tether the computer to your phone Internet if the computer has wireless capabilities.

  • I typically use between  80 MB and 200 MB in a day and average about 4 hours of game play between 6 am and midnight during the week. (1GB = 1024 MB)

Weekends I have used as much as 400 MB in a day but that would be several hours of play. For the whole month of May I used a total of 4GB of bandwidth. I don't download music or video files.

I am on high speed cable connection. Hope this information is helpful Aurora.

Edited to add that the amounts given actually include ALL my internet activities including email, etc (although I must confess that most of my on-line time is Glitch :-)

  • Some ISPs have a data usage meter that you can use to get a better idea of how much bandwidth you're using. Check the ISP's site for this or for any other suggestions as to how to monitor your usage.

  • Just a follow up note from my post above as I'm not sure if it was understood just how little bandwidth glitch appears to use....4GB in a whole month is a very small amount and less than 1/20th of my ISP cap.

As greyn noted, there are ways of monitoring your usage.....

  • If you're on Windows, you can get an idea by looking at the properties for your network connection. (Control panel -> Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing -> click on your connection)

I'm at <3MB today for an hour of glitching a a bit of other browsing.

  • Thanks for all the tips, guys! Like I said, there are four people using this connection, so I'm not sure how to monitor my usage alone, but I will give it a shot. But it's really good to know how much usage you guys are averaging, so thank you all for being super helpful and amazing ^.^

  • Bandwidth caps* are designed to create a perception of artificial scarcity on the part of consumers, such that they can be then encouraged to pay more to get more of this "limited" resource.

And it is really about all about online video (since nothing else really chews up bandwidth at that level), and limiting the # of hours of Netflix you can watch, thus making the alternate video service offered by the ISP with "unlimited" hours a "great deal".

    http://mashable.com/2011/10/27/netflix-takes-up-32-7-of-internet-bandwidth-study/

For example, a 250GB cap means you can watch roughly 249.8 hours of high quality SD video, or 108.5 hours of HD. From the Netflix site:

    1.  Good quality (up to 0.3 GB per hour)
    2.  Better quality (up to 0.7 GB per hour)
    3.  Best quality (up to 1 GB per hour, or up to 2.3 GB per hour for HD)

Edit: You only use a few hunderd MB a month for ALL other "normal" browsing, a little higher if you stream music (about 6 MB per hour - in GB its 0.055 GB per hour)

    * Extreme cases e.g. non-stop torrenting do not need any caps, there are abuse of service provisions already which deal with this!!!
