End Game Content (Staff Please Read)

Not really an idea here more of a discussion because I don't know about anyone else but Glitch once you take out the chatting or partying aspect kindof doesn't have anything after you have got your house/tower and skills up. No reason to work on your tower really apart from making museums etc.

I'm not complaining I love Glitch but its more of a grind right now as there is nothing new apart from cosmetics and feats which require you to do the same thing over and over for one or two new quests. (Fun but short)

Maybe im the only one who feels this but is there any possibility of getting some hints as to 'bigger' upcoming content that will perhaps generate a market or require the use of our skills like towers did?

Thanks for reading,

Nyt.

  • I once felt exactly like you, Nyt. Now I half-feel like that.

What changed my perception of Glitch are Badges. They are stupid, pointless and often boringly repetitive, but they are something worthy to go after while you wait for more content to be built.

Towers, however... bah, I just can't see the fun in building one - but that's probably because I have still quite a lot of badges to gain.

Having said this, it is very true that Glitch currently lacks interesting goals for longtime players (longtime: I have been playing for one year now and I am afraid I am an elder) and what is called and overarching narrative compelling people to keep playing. After all, if I am still here it only depends on my job, full of reflection pauses in which a zen-like, repetitive activity is a good pastime as any.

I have recently expressed how I'd love to see huge collaborative projects again, focusing the efforts of many players towards the discovery/unlocking of something new. Feats sorta work like that, but they build "invisibly" and individually, whereas seeing some sort of visible progress - even on much longer times - would probably feel more like a motivator.

A long time ago in the forums we discussed new worlds to imagine/colonize, or the pros and cons of having a limited lifetime in Ur. I guess there would be many possible interesting roads to developing new content to explore - but ultimately for TS it is more sensible to build for the large mass of low-level players than for the smallish group of longtimers, so I can see why things are like they are (for now, I hope).

  • I am very pro Player created activities.  These are often Fun and give a break from the plodding every day routine of tending gardens and animals, mining and exploring, etc.  There are often some really fun activities which are now somewhat hidden over in Announcements.  I miss those things being in the General Forum.  I do forget to check Announcements because when I do I often see things of little interest to me.  Check there occasionally to find special events which are fun and creative.  Or, create and organize your own event.

  • I feel that way at times and wonder how long I'll stay. The feats brought me back from other games because I missed my friends and Ur. But I'm staying (for now at least) because of the community and the quirky ideas I come up with and see. Jal gave me something new to do (run from the hi rockets, which is surprisingly fun), the Battra Brigade reminded me that people can be downright weird, but fun and funny, and TS reminds me quite often that they do care about us.

So, although there may not be much long term content that isn't grindy and boring, there are selling points to it. And I am holding out hope that there is something in the works that won't be so repetitive, yet draws me in even further (if that's possible).

  • I'll tell you something.  While it does take all kinds, in terms of gamers, there is a sweet spot with Glitch and I found it by circumstances beyond my control.

In the last year, I've been a pretty heavy Glitcher, but then I got laid off and had to look for work and eventually start my own business.  I haven't had the time to play like I used to.  Which was OK, because I was feeling the kind of burn out you describe, too.  So, I'd just log in and tend my shrines, process my potatoes and check for upgrades and leave.  Now I've added collecting quoins to that base level of activity, which keeps my currant levels going up rather than down.  And I haven't been doing this every day, either.  Just every three days, if that.

Basically, I haven't been playing the game, just keeping my account active and staying somewhat in touch with everyone.

But then, new content popped up.  And because I had been working hard on my responsibilities, I could take the time off to really enjoy it.  I'm still amped up on the new content, and getting a little disappointed that there isn't more, but that's what Glitch parties, pranks, performance pieces and puns are for.  Next week, the Giants willing, will be time to hibernate again and get back to making money so I can keep my subscription up.

In other words, the sweet spot is to log off when you're bored, keep on eye on the game, and have fun with your friends or the new content when either opportunity presents itself.  Take the game a little less seriously, and the rewards are much, much sweeter.

In short, don't do the grindy boring stuff!  You don't have to!  Your glitch will be fine if you don't have gardens, trees, pigs, currants, imagination, credits or a tower.  There's no penalty.

  • While I don't disagree with you, I have had no expectation of that changing during beta part deux.  When they originally launched, they believed they could grow and evolve the game from there, then hit some walls that they decided were important to knock down.  So they redid the base of the game, the tutorial, and the early game.  They offered to give our money back because we would be at the edge of content while waiting.  And here we are, at the edge of content.  They didn't go back to beta to cater to those who chose to play through beta.

I think it's pretty reasonable to assume they've noticed many players sitting on millions upon millions of iMG, and I think it's reasonable to expect and demand mid- and late-game content after the game launches, to expect the game to grow and evolve from there, at a pace designed to retain players that join around then.  Maybe they'll surprise me and do some of it prior to launch.  But I think expecting it now is ignoring the priorities they stated for back to beta.

  • What's the "end game"? If you mean reaching level 60, that's not a focus of the game and it really doesn't change anything. (It's not like you need to hit level cap to go raiding.)

I've suggested before that TS remove the level cap and just continue to scale up the levels forever. Since increasing in level provides basically no benefit, and content isn't designed for level bands, there should be no downside.

  • I remember feeling Super Accomplished when I made my first batch of Awesome Stew. I've thought for a while now that we needed some more super-complicated craftable kinds of things that it would take a while to learn (I feel like I shouldn't be able to learn everything in the game by level 30ish) but I'm not holding my breath....

ETA: I know that towers are kind of like that but I'm thinking more like.... bling of some description. Or a sparkly mechanical pony. Yes. Sparkly mechanical ponies!

  • The beginning/middle/end game is all about the sandbox as far as I'm concerned. Everything else is there to facilitate using your own imagination and creating the coolest shit that you can in your house/tower, making up the best adventures/contests, and entertaining other people with your creations. It's not just "museums, etc." to some of us; I have a horror epic playing out in my head that brings me hours of fun trying portray in my tower with the limited toys/furniture/decorations we're given to play with. Every new item or piece of furniture just makes the palette bigger.

Is it really such a minority of people here that see this as a different kind of game entirely? I'm not much of a social player, so I don't know what everyone else does with their time. The few that I have met that really "got it" were making some really inspired creations.

That's not the only way to have fun though! Some folks are really into statistics and reverse engineering the game mechanics, some like badges and grinding. I'm sure a lot are heavily into the social stuff. It's no Fafnir, and the mechanics could be greatly improved, but battling the Rook can be pretty wild and rewarding.

All of this could be improved and most of it will be "soon", I'm sure. I wouldn't hold my breath! Right now I think staff is more focused on fixing and balancing the beginning/mid game, and releasing new content that *everyone* can enjoy. Even if it seems they're a little quoin sharting obsessed.

  • Yeah, like I said, I'm not holding my breath at all. I just.... I like cooking and crafting and unfortunately, unless you're into construction/furniture (which I'm not particularly) there hasn't been much new in that arena in ages. (I think the last new food we got was the Smelt Your Face drink to use onion sauce?) *shrugs* I have a mild case of "other kids get shiny new toys, why can't I?" (I don't like dress-up much either) but... Meh.

  • Here's a thread on the state of the game from seventeen months ago, and stoot's first response.  As you can see, this has been a concern for a long while now.  TS spent months on the current housing/tower mechanics, and hopefully it'll pay off for them, literally -- they do need to sell credits and subscriptions in order to stay afloat -- but I don't think it's what many of us were imagining when staff said they were going to work on content for higher-level players.

Over here, stoot said, "We... have been thinking about different ways to get where we want to be (encouraging whimsy, play, exploration, creativity; not requiring mundane, repetitive tasks in order to continue the play)."  That line of thinking has obviously disappeared, since feats are nothing other than mundane, repetitive tasks.  It would be nice to know why.

  • Me too.  I had a goal to reach level 60.  Now that I've done that, I don't see anything that motivates  me to play.  Does anyone have any other games to recommend ?  Otherwise, I shall just have to work on all those tasks and projects in real life that I've been putting off.  lol.  :  )  I did enjoy getting to level 60.

  • If you liked Diablo II, Path of Exile will be coming out of closed beta pretty soon. And of course there's always Minecraft. I think Torchlight II is out now as well.

I don't really expect one game to hold my interest indefinitely. All games go through cycles of expansion and stagnation. In Glitch, the towers are good for now and because I had taken a break once I got my house decorated I'm still working on mine. By the time I get my tower built and furnished I imagine there will be something else interesting to do. If not, I'll nip off to play Torchlight II and keep an eye on the changelog.
