What do you value more? Currents or Energy?

Or mood?

I know currents and energy are aprox the same "value" when you compare things in that bean-count of mathy way some people do.   But the concept of "value" is more slippery than mere numbers can describe.

For example:  when I'm  current wealthy in the game, I feel like its very cheap to take the subway for 50c vs tp'ing for 75 energy.  But is the extra time getting to and from the subway worth it?  Not to mention the time spent  riding the train itself.

Energy runs out if you don't remember to carry enough food or don't wish to mess around with ordering from the auction or finding a vendor.   Energy takes a lot  personal attention to manage.   Currrents?  well if you run out of currents - even at a low level in the game - nothing too terrible is going to happen to you.

The value of mood is the easiest to neglect.   Has anyone figured out just how much xp they lose at various low levels of mood?

  • Energy. The value of the new day refilling your meters is underappreciated, imo.

  • I value both pretty much equally, although time is by far the most valuable element. Also, changing currants into energy and visa versa is so easy.

  • You need currents when you're early in the game and building up skills, buying a house etc, but once you've established yourself you find energy is much more important - you're using it all the time but there's not all that much use for currents.

  • Just what Momo said. Since I got my bags & housing squared away, it's all about energy. As Callagan said, though, converting currants to energy is easy. Now I tend to convert my currants into favor with the giants to speed up my skill learning.

I try to convert everything I encounter into opportunities to do more things. I prefer doing to having.

Edit: my mood pretty much takes care of itself. I'm a bit of a ... heavy petter.

  • Totally energy. I'm with MaryLiLamb on the meter refill - I tend to check my clock when I'm crafting. I'll wear myself down to near death if I know I'm going to get a meter refill in a few minutes. :)

A few trips triggering dust traps usually keeps me satisfied in currants by selling whatever I find. But if I see an energy quoin in the world? ZOMG GIMME GIMME. I'm like a camped-out housewife at a Walmart on Black Friday.

    So, yeah. Energy. :p

  • what can you do to use up excess mood toward the end of the day?  Besides dying?  All I can think of is low-skill gardening and maybe fruit changing and spice grinding without the skills.

  • Treesa, how about making stinky cheese? I think that's a mood drain.
Posted 14 months ago by Aleph Zero Subscriber! | Permalink
  • about converting currents to energy:  it is not always that easy if you are mining and there are only mining vendors around.   You have to monkey around with your orb and wait for the frog to deliver some food while everyone else is cleaning up all the nearby sparkly.

  • munchma:  A new cheese trick!  I'll try that

  • When you spend a lot of time poisoning trees and summoning rooks, mood becomes a real challenge to keep maxed. I have a few easy ways to do it though. Focused Meditation+Bubble Tea. And I also just keep a music block on hand to convert energy to mood. I have a macro that spams it, so it works out pretty well.

Overall, I don't worry about Currants or Energy. Money is hardly an issue and 1 energy costs less than 1 currant if you're playing the game correctly.

    Edit:

    Treesa,

How so? If you're mining just buy food from the auction. If none is up, ask someone to auction some food.

  • "wait for the frog to deliver some food". <--------------------

    That's buying from the auction.
Posted 14 months ago by WindBorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • It takes time to get food from auction.   A lot of time with changing tabs, ordering and waiting.   You interrupt your mining while all the rocks disappear.  After you find a space for it and eat you you often need to find another street with fresh rocks to mine on.   Energy intensive activities take a lot of planning.
As for mood, I'm mostly interested in how to convert mood to currents at days end.  I've never really had much difficulty managing to keep mood up.  Hardly notice it most of the time.

"If you are playing the game correctly"  ......you should be poisoning trees if you are playing the game correctly?  lol
I am aware that 1 current = 1 energy but as I said in the op, value is not just a numbers game.

Apart from currents, energy, and mood,  the value of bag space should also be reckoned.   Sometimes when you get higher level skills you are awarded with  these harvesting "gifts" which are sometimes more of a liability than anything else.  For example, since I've learned the jessilica scooping skill I get these nearly useless "gifts" from harvesting - oil dressing is one of the worst.   Takes up a whole slot (yes you can fit lots in one slot if you are in the habit of carrying around oily dressing), gives about 3 energy if you eat it, feels weird to eat it, sure you can dump it but what was the point of the skill?  to fill your bags with odd items?
Posted 14 months ago by Treesa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Its ok if you get a music box or something, but these small items just make me wish I'd never learned the skill.
Posted 14 months ago by Treesa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Energy.  I can't do anything without it.

When I didn't have skills I valued currents more, because I had to buy everything.

  • I raise the issue of bag space because i just went in to order some cheese to convert to stinky cheese as per munchma's suggestion.  I noticed that the 20 cheese I bought filled 1 slot until I aged them and then they required 2 slots.   Luckily I had 2 slots.

  • Energy:Currant are not 1:1.

First of all if you check the market you can usually find food that is .5Currant:1Energy, this is very common and the most expensive you'll ever need (you can buy over 5,000 energy before reaching this price) is .75Currant:1Energy.

With that said Currant:Energy from ingame actions as long as you specialized in either Gardening or Animal Kinship is also very, very low. After around AK5(Maybe it's 6, maybe 4 wasn't keeping track), you get 2Energy:30Energy, with the amount of pigs in the world, let's say in some magical mysterious bot way you managed to nibble all 332 ( glitch.alwaysdata.net/ ) pigs in the world, you'd waste 664 Energy to get a total of 9,960 back, making basically 9,296 Energy that day for some walking and nibbling. It's of note that you can get double that once you're allowed 2 nibbles/day, also just having 26 or so in your house gives you more than enough. Basically with this Energy, why would I need more?! Maybe it's because i'm only lvl 17 or so, but I find Energy to be useless, Currant almost as much, if I want Currant I mine or sell some stuff. My main problem if anything is keeping up items for Favor donating, I donate Meat and Sparkly at the moment, wish I could find better items for donating.

  • Poppy:  yes, but even in the early stages energy has more game "value" , imo, than currents.  New players are constantly struggling to keep their energy up (and they're scared of dying, as they should be, since it will be hard to find resources to replenish themselves with when they get out of hell).

Since our energy capacity goes up over time ( how does that work?  with leveling up?  I've seen my energy capacity increase without having leveled up..) isn't it obvious that energy is the single most valuable thing in the game?  With a larger energy capacity you can play for longer, without the stress of constantly having to find food/carry food/order food.

So my point is - yes there's a point to this thread :D - WHY is everyone chasing currents? Is it motivated by greed or by a misunderstanding of the value of currents?
Sure it seems like you can get unlimited currents, but you can also keep increasing your energy capacity.    Yet we still keep chasing currents..(and $$ in the real world :D )
Posted 14 months ago by Treesa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • If we didn't have the auction, I'd say energy.. and just hoard all resources. Considering the auction can make you ALOT of currants, which then converts to buying surplus food resources for energy, I like having alot of currants to move around. I only have about 20k on me, but i've probably spent well over 100k worth just buying/selling stuff.

  • Bluigi:  How much value do you feel favor has?  it can buy you more skills NOW, and these skills can give you more entertainment, more things you can do in the game.  I'm not sure how much value that has for me.  Eventually I'll have most of the skills and I can do the ones first that interest me most.

You can donate to shrines to buy xp and a higher level.   The higher level, imo, has very little intrinsic value.   Perhaps a sort of vanity value for having advanced in the game or maybe even the value of seeing your name on the leaderboard.  The higher level can get you some currents and go toward increasing the other core values of energy and mood but I really don't see much play value in the level number itself.
Posted 14 months ago by Treesa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • To increase your energy capacity you need XP, which you can get via energy or currants.

Also I think a lot of people just feel the need to reach a plateau of sorts with currants, there is talk of 100k houses, so a lot of people want to make sure they have at least 100k, possibliity of group halls? Depending on mechanics they may want to have the money for those right away, and there are other things I'm sure. It's also easier to transfer currant:energy than energy:currant currently, since it's easier to go and buy the energy (not for a good price mind you), when buying you'll end up buying at something like .5~.75c:1e, versus selling which will be at about .8~1c:1e, depending on what you are selling.

The selling market of course simply depends on if you are selling to people who don't know about the various scripts that allow you to get cheap energy:currant, and that you have people who want your particular flavor of food.

  • Right now my energy capacity is at 600.  How high does it go?  Does anyone know?

For me, I think the ultimate goal (if there is one) would be to have such a high energy capacity that I could play - or stay inworld - all day without having to constantly check to keep my energy level up.   Eating, in and of itself, is not an enjoyable activity inside the game.  Its a chore.  And when you have to imagine yourself eating something like a bottle of oily dressing just keep doing the fun thing you are doing - bleh.  I don't need that.
Posted 14 months ago by Treesa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • @Treesa - Favor has a value to a point yes, it gives XP (this seems to have a diminishing return with each donation?) to help you level and increase your Energy cap, and also helps you speed up your skills. I wouldn't say Favor is too important compared to Energy, they're about equal in importance up until you have all the skills you care about maxed. Favor also has a cap on Energy:Day, meaning that while it may be worth more(if you value XP) it quickly hits 0 after about one big donation.

Nothing in the game has really too much value, which indeed lets you choose what you want to do, but also means that stockpiling anything is rather meaningless, what do you do with it in bulk? Does it matter if you have 500,000 Energy of food laying around? Does it matter if you have 500,000 Currant laying around? Or even 500 Emblems? Everything is useful but up to a point, and they all have their uses that while they can be compared and exchanged, all hit their limits pretty fast.

  • @Treesa - Eating isn't that bad it's just clicking a food and choosing a number, I'm only at 420 or so energy, wait til I'm at around 50 and then just eat 40 or so Meat, and I rarely run down to that Energy level unless I'm doing something Energy-intensive.
Posted 14 months ago by Bluigi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Bluigi:  so people are chasing currents out of a fear that the devs might spring 100k homes on them and they won't have the currents to buy them right away?  I've always suspected that there is a strong relationship between money and fear :D

Lack of currents isn't the only thing that could get in the way of a person buying a house they want.  If you've already got a big enough house to have a lot of resources stored there, there is still a finite amount of stuff you can put into bags.   Bag space is not unlimited.   If you are collecting resources - maybe you want to jump on street projects when they come up - you will not have an easy time of grabbing a new house that you see up for sale.
Posted 14 months ago by Treesa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • you can eat 40 or so meat if you've remembered to bring them with you and you are not doing anything too energy intensive.

Clicking on a food sounds easy but when you've got only bags in your backpack you need to make sure you remember which bag its in. When you get food from auction it doesn't necessarily go automatically to your food bag.  All this takes attention and planning.   If you enjoy that, then fine.

  • Bluig:  "Favor has a value to a point yes, it gives XP"

No, favor is favor and xp is xp.  When you donate to a shrine you get both xp and favor points.  The favor points can be spent to speed up learning and the xp is used to level up.
Posted 14 months ago by Treesa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The value you get from favor is to speed up learning so you can entertain yourself with more skills/activities.   You might also wish to have an emblem or collectors trophy for its own sake.
Posted 14 months ago by Treesa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Ah yes, well that's what I meant sorry. Donating is worth the favor and the xp, the end point of donating being both speeding up skills, and gaining xp.

For moving, that's not a big problem if you're prepared, either get some friends online to help or make an alt or two fill them with bigerbags and haul away, only problem is leaving your trees, plant new ones.

I keep my bags rather clean, all food bags on the right, 2 are full of meat, they are Green, regular colored bags are inbetween that store Crops, and other Foods I bought or received from Ancestral. It'll take me maybe 3 clicks and typing in, could be easier, but it's not too terrible. I also never leave without 2 sacks of meat, I don't see much of a reason to not bother, I rarely am doing something so intensive that it fills my other 10 or so open sacks (Not counting I keep one spot of inventory open, and a Tool bag)

As for just Favor as Favor, I value it, but not as much as energy, however as I said before they all have their limits and it's pointless to sack endless amounts of any in exchange for the others, however let's say that I had 'just enough' energy, I would probably go with more currants, they seem to store easier.

  • When you get stuff delivered from auction, it goes where it goes, not necessarily where you want it to go.   Same for your expired auction items.  They just get put back wherever there is a space.  And don't even get me started on butterfly milk/butter/cheese.   Jumps all over the place when you compress or age it.   Its like living with someone who constantly puts your eyeglasses away in different places as soon as you take them off..
Posted 14 months ago by Treesa Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Yea those are very annoying to make, that's why I keep them on the floor, usually not too big of a deal however as I'm not making cheese or butter away from home, where I can just open the last bag and move them as I go, or toss two bags in my cabinet so that the items will go straight to inventory. Can also just move around my bags to have an empty dumpbag in the front. Since switching bags isn't a thing, I find that having that one empty inventory slot is insanely useful for these sorts of things.
Posted 14 months ago by Bluigi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Well maybe I'll try that idea of the empty bag in front.  I'm almost done with the completest badges so I won't be out so much.
