Do you garden in real life??

I am a passionate gardener in RL. I have grown mangoes, kiwis (vines), walnuts,  persimmons, table grapes, tomatoes and nutmeg.   The latter is to smoke in my pipe.

  • I always wanted to grow strawberries and things like that, but unfortunately I live up North so not a big window to grow them.. Also has to do with our two dogs always running over and digging up any plant that has a color other than green :P.

  • I suggest you use the French method of elevated beds... Build planter boxes 3 feet high. Redwood... If the dogs jump up and dig whip them.

  • How funny nutmeg growing, first thing I tried in my pipe was banana peels (lol) and yes have grown all the above except mangoes, or persimmons still have kiwis and get hundreds every year, same with my decorative strawberries that have the sweetest fruit.  These grow year after year with little help from me.  Even though we get snow for at least several weeks, even the snap dragons come back along with the roses and Iris's.  This year I have 6 planters of tomatoes loaded with tomatoes, yellows, cherries Roma's and Big Girls.

Dogs stay out of garden areas and in their 1/2 acre pen to play, dig and poop.  Much better for all concerned.

I love to garden but last couple of years arthritis has limited how much I can do, so frustrating.

  • I used to have arthritis but I willed it away..      I said, " I don't have time for this."   Dogs must have a play area.  My last dog, a black Lab named Big Foot, lived to be 18 years old.   He was born in my bedroom of an errant Weimaraner bitch named Amber.

  • I start a small garden almost every year of corn, peppers, tomatoes and other veggies. Roses year round and recently even started some acorns. They are nearly 3ft now.
    Just bought some Vincas for the planter on Saturday and was thinking of planting them with a few lumps of peat and loam I thought I had lying around...until i realized that was IN THE GAME & not IRL ^_^;;

  • I used to be a passionate gardner until I got a couple of Czechoslovakian Wolfdogs.
The garden is very big, but never enough for them.
Now we have plums, figs, persimmons and pears with the lower branches nibbled, a very well fenced up small veg garden with courgettes, tomatoes and a small corner for the herbs.
All my huge vases full of flowers are a thing of the past :)

  • I should say so!  I'm putting together a business plan to set up a nursery/sauces business at the end of the year/beginning of next!

  • My Lab picks persimmons off the tree and eats them...He can reach up 4 feet but does no permanent damage...The Kelpie herds him while he harvests....

  • No way it is too hot and to much exercise..

  • I'm like Laurali. But I just started trying to get into it. Usually I kill everything I tough, but I've got a couple things in the kitchen now, struggling to start growing. So far I've got a tiny sensitive plant struggling to stay alive and two of those kinds of plants somebody brings back as souvenirs from hawaii in a little bag. Do any of you guys have any suggestions for good things to grow indoors from seed, that even I can grow without killing? XD

@Napabeth: My old dog used to do that with the little peach tree in our backyard! She'd carry them inside and pick the pits clean before going out for a second.

  • I was going to start a garden this summer, but with wedding planning things were super hectic. I think we'll do one next year. I want tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, various herbs, etc.

  • For those with a black thumb I suggest cacti.... you can't kill them. Just don't water them... You can get good ones at the Home Depot... A cactus will teach you to be very careful.....

  • Cacti...that's actually a really good suggestion....will have to look into this...

  • Cacti look really good nestled up to an old cow skull....the Southwest theme is very popular.

  • Not yet (no space) but I really look forward to it someday.

  • I tried cacti but I have the bad habit of watering them, and petting them is painful.....

  • Suddenly inspired to run out and buy as many cacti as possible. Boyfriend will have an interesting surprise when he gets home...

  • Not really, but it's funny youmention it.  Last night I weeded and leveled the little patch of dirt in front of our dining room window.  Planning on a DIY water fountain, a hydrangea, and some other complimentary ground covers.

  • No, but that's only because I live in an apartment and I cannot garden. But over the past few months I have been growing a tiny basil plant from seeds. Hopefully I can garden more when I have a real house someday. My basil is 3 inches tall :D

  • For sure!  My wife does the flowers; I do the veg.  How's that for gender stereotyping?  Having most summer meals come straight out of the garden is one of best parts of life, as far as I am concerned.  Oh, I do most of the cooking, too, so we're don't tic all the stereotype boxes!  :-)

  • Peaches, Mangoes, Persimmons? Not here, not without a greenhouse :) I do have a huge garden that I am slowly trying to tame. I am trying to fill it with shrubs in the hope that they will fill the space and squeeze out the weeds. I have a raised bed that had cauliflowers in it earlier, it's now got a few onions. Raised beds are THE way to go. Much easier... and they look a bit like garden plots... or rather herb plots :D

  • Yessss
My patio has a whole lot of sun, so I managed to this year. EVERYTHING is dying though, our weather is totally messed up. I've used....3 tiiny tomatoes, some basil leaves, and maybe 8 strawberries.

I've gotten around 10 under-developed pea pods. I realized I am giving them TOO MUCH sun, so they all dried up.

I'm growing some grocery store beans in a plastic cup in here now, they're doing pretty well, and they are safe in here. I don't expect food to come from them, but I won't complain if it does.

  • My neighbor has a large garden. I have one small basil plant, which is the only thing I haven't been able to kill.

  • I always have to have some kind of plant in my space. For a long time it was just houseplants, after moving away from home (where we grew vegetables every summer). Now I enjoy gardening with bulbs, perennials, native plants and herbs. Some year we'll build a raised bed for veggies. :)
