What's new? Release notes for testing period- July 12-15, 2011

Home Security at POL’s (Player Owned Location).
As you invest in your home, and store your wares there for safety, we're adding a security system for your protection. Players visiting your home are no longer able to summon another player uninvited into your home. You decide who your guests are, and how long they stay. Summoning another player to a POL will land them just outside the front door, where knocking can commence.

Ever have a guest that wouldn’t leave? Introducing a new ‘verb’ to kick them out. This new action will put a player outside your door, removing their access to your home. When you log-out, your guests lose access to your POL, and are ever so gently placed outside your door.

Job Improvements
Like to work? So do our devs! Thanks to some hard work to make the Jobs code more efficient, players that like doing Jobs should see a drastic reduction in memory consumption.

New Quests
We’ve added a few quests that promote sharing the love with your fellow Glitches! The new Mail Quest teaches players how to send mail to another Glitch, (be a friend, send a frog) while the new Mining Quest teaches players that tackling a rock together is much more satisfying than picking all alone.

Vendor Changes
Parsnip is now available at participating vendors and grain is not. Grain can only be received from chickens and you can now bundle your grain into a bushel of 250 grains for a mere 20 energy.

Butterflies and Bananas
To further interesting game play, our butterflies and bananas have also undergone some changes. You will notice a difference singing to Butterflies and find tweaks with other animal interactions. Early levels of banana caressing tweaks have also occurred.

(more to come, very 'soon') ;)

  • Thanks, Pinot, but this is from the encyclopedia about Rookswort:
    beta.glitch.com/items/rooks...

"Munching on this will give you the Steady as a Rook buff (no mood loss)."

I also mentioned this in my help report.

So, which is correct?  That it offers, as the description says, no mood loss, or that, as you say, it makes you immune to the effects of mood loss?  And what does that mean, that even with low mood, we still get XP for actions or do not die?

If the latter, your response is correct, can you please change the encyclopedia so that we stop telling each other that Rookwort offers no mood loss?

Also, if what you said is the way it's supposed to work, and the encyclopedia is incorrect, can those who respond to bug reports please just let us know how it's supposed to work rather than just closing the bug report?   It's fairly annoying to read official writings ("no mood loss") then file a bug when that doesn't happen, then get tickets closed saying "we're looking into it" then have a dev mention on the forum (finally) that the item has nothing to do with "no mood loss".

    Thanks.

  • I hate to be a party pooper but the mailbox noises made me nuts!  maybe I should say nuttier.  I did like the sounds from the dust traps though.  The frog didn't sound very "froggie" but I only heard one so it was OK but I am not sure if I want to hear that at projects where frog deliveries can get pretty intensive.

I bought parsnip seeds, planted them, went for a walk.  When I returned, there were no seeds in the patches I planted, no plants, nothing!  At least one potato also disappeared.  I am a little suspicious of my pig though he looks innocent inside his pen.

I suppose I will very soon get used to the sounds and hardly notice them at all.  In fact after the blue mailbox sounded off for about the 50th time I was able to ignore it.  :-)

  • Crops and herbs take longer to grow!!!

If you caught God's long explanation in the game you'll already know this but: a (very) long time ago a setting from our testing environment on the development servers accidentally got released on to testing which meant that stuff grew in gardens 10x faster than it was supposed to. We knew that everyone would want to play the game as designed and so we made everything grow 10x slower. Good news, right?!

But, in the initial design you could also use guano to fertilize your crops. And we never did implement that. So, we decided to hold off on slowing growth down until you were able to speed it up again: you can now spend guano to instantly get a seeds to the seedling stage (50% of the time). And you can add more guano to a plot to speed up the final growth stage as well: adding guano to a seedling takes of 90% of the remaining time. Net result: by spending two guano you can get crops and herbs twice as fast as you used to be able to. So, it's ok.

    Right?

  • Thank you for explaining it instead of just changing it on us! Twice as fast makes it all good :)

  • You'll be happy to know that the encyclopedia entry for Rookswort has been changed so it is no longer misleading. Instead, it is now completely incomprehensible.

  • Well thank you Pinot ;) guess this one of the reasons we love Glitch!

  • I love TS. I want to work there. Where else can you say stuff like this:

You'll be happy to know that the encyclopedia entry for Rookswort has been changed so it is no longer misleading. Instead, it is now completely incomprehensible.

    FTW- Love it Pinot!

  • God mentioned that batterflies will now drop guano periodically without feedings. How does that work? Drop rate?

    Just curious, as always :-)

  • I am reminded that sometimes wit fails to come across as the author intended on the internet (although you got two people to laugh about it, so perhaps I'm just uptight).

I find it fairly insulting how the rookwort bugs have been handled, and can't help but see the wit or sarcasm in pinot's post as a further insult.  We're asked as beta testers to submit bugs.  I've noticed that sometimes, it's impossible to tell what a bug is since no one has bothered to spell out what a certain thing *really* does (some examples: speed learned skill pauses, the former issues with teleportation, the happy crab quest), but in this case, the encyclopedia defined rookswort as having 'no mood loss', bug reports were closed repeatedly not with an explanation as to how it's supposed to work but with "we're looking into it", and now we find that the thing is working as intended in an incomprehensible way, so the encyclopedia now reflects it.  Of course, we still don't know wtf rookswort is supposed to do; I'm confused as to why some things get explained meticulously (as in shared mining) and other things get no explanation whatsoever, almost as if the joke's on us - hah - good luck finding out what rookswort does or does not do.

All in all, it feels not worth it to submit bug reports.

Don't worry, before you inform me to take a break, I've already decided to do so but I didn't want to just let it slide that I don't find it fair at all to ask beta testers to test things and submit bugs and then to have them handled like this.  That's my opinion, if you find otherwise, great, but I've said what I wanted to say anyway rather than just continue to stuff what makes me unhappy about Glitch the most.

  • Strong agreement here with the fact that we will be much better testers if we know how things are *supposed* to work.

  • I am finding this thread confusing mostly because the information imparted from staff has morphed too much, since the minute it was first started.

It's harder (I think) for older players to have a bead on this stuff because it's being presented in language that is longer on showmanship and shorter on clarity, which is nice and all, but I really just want to know straight up wtf is going on with butterflies now. And wtf does rookswort do now. gurly drinks now, what?...that info is presented as a second-hand report from another dev...is it true?  I have no idea from reading this thread.

I am just getting the feeling that test day came too fast for staff this time.   I have a strange wish to be looking at a spreadsheet with changes listed instead of friendly forum post, sorry to say.
Posted 17 months ago by Nanookie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • +1 for wanting a nice rectangular spreadsheet which is updated as things change throughout a test.  The google has a nice shareable one.

  • So, rookswort does nothing to help you during a rook attack?
Posted 17 months ago by FrankenPaula Subscriber! | Permalink
  • lol @ FP, I guess not!  Maybe a bubble tree will explain why it has the word "rook" in the name!  I wanted to add but had to run away, that I don't personally mind "re-learning" about butterflies, or rookswort or what have you.  But it would faster, and I would sound less like a moron to newbies, if I could get the changes, all the changes, in a less informal, conversational way.

  • When is the test ending? I'd like to know when I have to return to solace, please. Lol.

EDIT: "A couple of days" x 2 = approx 4 days. I may assume the test will end Friday at 5 PST but this is just a rough estimate, I'm sure... so... yeah...

  • The twitter account said, "Join us, Glich is now open until Friday! Come get your Glitch fix with us!" so I'm going to say Friday is a very safe bet. =)

  • Oh jeez, I didn't even realize the thread title says 12th through 15th. Blame it on the alakol.
Posted 17 months ago by Cerulean Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Rookswort has always worked as intended (so there was no bug in terms of functionality) — it just has a confusing description: the mood loss it stops is the kind that happens periodically while you are logged in to the game, not the kind that results from specific actions you take. (Other uses for Rookswort are coming later ;)

The gurly drink has no effect on singing to butterflies (it was only supposed to count for "normal" animation interactions like massaging, nibbling, squeezing, etc., not "special" interactions like singing, but that slipped in and became a crazy source of XP).
Posted 17 months ago by stoot barfield Subscriber! | Permalink
  • OK, yes , this is beta and accept that maybe some things went in that weren't supposed to and now they are being 'corrected'  However, I do agree that it would help if we could see some kind of spreadsheet that explained this better.  As said, it would help us to know (and perhaps reduce the Live questions) as to what exactly is happening should be happening.

That said, I love the flexibility that is demonstrated by TS to tweak based on feedback, but, there is a bit BUTT!

This is a game we play for entertainment, and that must continue to provide incentive and reward to keep playing.  Please don't say that the XPs  or currants were getting silly; it's all relative to how each individual plays the game.  Some don't care about the Xps; some don't care about the currants, but others do.  If this game is aiming to please all (although I know that's an impossibility), taking those incentives away is not going to help.  After all, it doesn't cost anything.  People won't complain if they can get them, but people will if they can't!

I appreciate that much must have been discussed and planned last week, but this update, after a longer break has been a little disappointing.  Sorry guys, it just seems to have been more about negatives than positives and I am sure we all know just how hard you work.

Those who base their game play on cooking, for example, now find that Gurly drinks are pretty worthless (most only used them for singing to butterflies) - maybe reduce the buff but don't take it away altogether.  Crops now need bf guano to move them along (doesn't really affect me but can understand how this can others) - Happy medium please - maybe make the chickens poop but have to use energy to convert it to fertiliser IDK.

Can't comment on jobs/projects as still not my thing.

Rookswort, well never been around for a rook attack so not even tried to use it so can't comment on that.

New sounds, don't mind them at all, love the thinger sound anyway! ;-)
Glad Xps are back for new places.
Sad I reached level 50 last test so missed out on the currants, but hey, I have enough for now;-)

Quests? Hmm, am still pinning my hopes on work being done for more quests on higher levels, maybe compounded quests?

Grain bundling?  Am assuming from what was said, that this is leading to something else, but thanks Pinot for quickly putting in an 'unbundling', coz that was needed;-)

    Yay Parsnip seeds...at last!

Kick out and lock down - great to see, but would still like to see a 'trusted' option so that 'trusted' could enter and re-enter my home and stay even if not online.  Onus being on me if it all went pear shaped!

Final note personally to Stoot - What on earth do you have against girly knickers and what does a girl (or boy) have to do to get them into their wardrobe? ;-)

  • PR, could you modify the original post with a comprehensive list of the changes as additional items are being released/updated in addition to the comment made by others in the string of comments? Having to scroll through all the comments to find yet another update is a bit of a hassle...would be helpful to those of us that aren't on the game 24/7 and getting god's updates in game to have a single place to see all great and wonderful (and some less than great and wonderful) changes that are happening...thanks!

I liked being able to see where I was relative to the leaders but it's gone now. The pagination is nice, but having to page through to figure out where I am relative to everyone else is not so great.

  • Can you please please make a change to rookswort to make the user not lose mood for a period of time while reviving animals during a rook attack? We had high hopes for it as an anti-rook herb. What with the name being rookswort and all.

  • No offense to you Devs coz I know how hard y'all work...but I just am not enjoying this test at all.
Seems to have turned into a hurry up and wait game, rather than the relaxing, fun game that I had found it to be previously.
I now have to wait 2 hours(!!!) for rice to grow...unless I want to go play with the bats (which I don't) or pay even more outlandish prices on the auctions.
I can no longer feed piglets grains to make them grow - why would I want to feed them other foods when they take so long to grow now? lol
The chickens are still irritating when they want to fly around even after you've clicked on them and then you have to wait forever til they finally decide that they're not flying after all - ya can't even set them free til they get around to settling down
The gurly drinks have totally become disappointing - altho it now works the way it's suppose to with the other critters for me, I'd much rather have the singing to the butterflies and XP back.
Seems like the food and drink part of the game has taken a big hit :(

I do love this game but I actually kicked off and went and played another game for a while - something I've never done before while this game was open :(

GOD's words, yesterday, were "...and you're going to like it" - ss GOD, but I don't!

  • Stoot, if it's always worked the way it's supposed to work, then why have I been getting responses to bug reports that you're "looking into it?"

Perhaps down the line what rookwort does will make sense, but given that it's just about impossible to play and have 'periodic mood loss' even affect you ( there's even a topic dedicated to how feeble a concept mood is), the herb seems worthless.

As for the specialness of Sing To (another thing that was being treated as a bug when the game opened) - seriously? So, some menus on animals are 'normal' and others are 'special'? I call foul. If you want a special menu item, then just make us have to activate it with a special thing somehow, like lips need Teddy bears for kisses or like massaging and lotion and skills. But to now say that Gurly Drinks don't avoid energy loss when signing to butterflies was never intended because signing isn't normal just feels like a mind game. You limited how many times we can sing, surely that should suffice in terms of making sure we don't collect too much xp.

  • Respectfully, I appreciate all the hard work that TS does. Following zee, I have to agree that the "looking into it" / bug closed responses on bug reports leave me confuzzled. Here's why: as a tester, I'd like to know
    (a) if what I reported is useful to TS
    (b) how I can improve my reports
As an optional bonus, it's rewarding to see something updated after I try to help by reporting an issue.

When a report is closed without details, I find myself wondering: was it new; an existing issue; in work; couldn't reproduce; incomplete; or did I just plain sound like a crazy person? Moar feedback would go a long way, I think.

You can give your watering can a refreshing break now!  Newly watered plants will now stay quenched for 12 hours, rather than 7.

  • I have to agree that this test has not been fun as in previous tests. I have a few friends who are already getting bored with the game. I don't think that's what you wanted.

  • Thank you for the update Pepper_Rose - that will help. I'm not looking for 'bots that can harvest, store and replant' as Stoot posted on Gardening Changes, but certainly some kind of watering system is needed.
I wouldn't go plant in real life until I had established my sprinklers/drip feeders.

  • zeeberk, it wasn't me who answered your case, but I would assume that if the person who answered it said that they were going to look into it, it'd be because … they were going to look into it ;)

There are in a very literal sense thousands of "features" in the game (verb actions on items alone are probably over 5k — and that's not counting how skills/player states affect verb actions) so not every person responding to a report will know the correct answer off the top of their head.

    ——
Lelu, more feedback might go a long way, but there's no way we can afford to write detailed/custom responses to every report we get (we get hundreds and hundreds per day at a minimum right now). If we don't need any more information or when we get many reports of the same thing, we usually say "thanks!" and close the tickets.

I've submitted probably about 1,000 bugs to Adobe, Apple, Mozilla, Microsoft, etc., through  automated crash reporting over the years (maybe 10% of those actually included me writing an explanation when I thought it might help). I've never received a response to any of them and never expected one. I think the problem here might be that we've created an impossible expectation :\
Posted 17 months ago by stoot barfield Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Stoot, thanks for the helpful response on what "looking into it" means for testers.  Sometimes others don't realize the evolution that's going on until it's pointed out or announced.  We've enjoyed very personal responses for quite a while from the entire team, which has been absolutely wonderful.  While I have a hunch that you'd like to keep a personal feeling to things as far as possible, I completely understand that volume and the size of the player base make it necessary to adjust things as Glitch grows.

  • Hey, so.... we're always listening!

Crop and Herb Growing time has been DECREASED.

Just when you thought you could plant, fertilize, water and relax with a nice fruity beverage.... we've decreased the growing time by 40%.  So, drink up Glitch's it's harvest time!

  • I vote for piggy plops being used for fertilizer as well. It's poop too, after all.

Also I think a composting skill, maybe available after soil appreciation? could be interesting. Add organics or elements to created your own mix.

  • I have to agree with sgjo.  This test kinda of deflated my passion a tad.  Might it be that the xp for higher levels?  Please understand, I'm doing okay making currants by going to Baqala and Choru but still, the challenge to go to new levels isn't there.  So I wonder if you've had/have a strategy for what might be done after level 20?  Gardening is improved with today's new change so kudos there and thank you for that.
Posted 17 months ago by AlmostSilver Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Someone last night was suggesting mixing piggy plop with various other ingredients to make fertilizers with different properties eg higher yield, faster grow time. I think that's an awesome suggestion... wonder if the devs could make it fly.

  • possible bugs:

    * On the very first screen, when our Glitch avatar is "born" the enter and arrow keys do not work and all actions have to be done with the mouse. The keys start working once you go into the "real world" and star getting instructions on the basics.

    * the Glitch avatar occasionally freezes, and will not move or do anything at all.

    Some suggestions:

*changing the names on the bags depending on price (e. g. plain bag and fancy bag) since I noticed both bags had the same capacity. It would be nice if there were bigger bags too.

    * recovering health or mood while inactive might be good too, as I noticed you can go to purgatory even if not doing anything (does that mean we use energy while standing still?).
Posted 17 months ago by Miss Smurfette Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Miss Smurfette

You are correct that you use energy while standing still.

There are two sizes of bags you can buy:  a smaller bag with 10 slots and a bigger bag with 16 slots.  Both kinds of bags can be renamed by you to anything you like.

  • i almost don't want to bump this thread because there's a lot of constructive criticism that borders on complaining, but i want to say that i enjoyed this test a lot more than the last few tests. i think this was mainly because i didn't play nearly as much. remember when we went around and around about addiction and what that meant and what responsibility TS had? many of us agreed that TS was doing something very right, because so many of us were hooked! i think stoot mentioned some number like "100 hours" of gameplay, which i'm guessing had many of us gasping, like, oh... uh... right, you mean in the first 3 days we played? yeah, so i came back down to earth this week, and played like a human being who was only slightly obsessed- an hour before work and, you know... 3 hours after work. and hte game was Really Fun. i could set myself little goals, and achieve them. I didn't obsess about speeding skills, or anything, really.

that being said, the gardening changes were unfun, and i really appreciate the changes that the devs made after the feedback.

the couple minor new things that i was disappointed in:
-the two new worlds were repeats. we now have 3 new worlds that are identical, and quite boring. the nostalgia thing is ok, but would be way more ok if there was something exciting about going there. there was no real reason to go to the two areas we opened last test this time, as there were no active projects, and no resources that i need- i suppose i could go paper collecting? and there are bigger coins. also, the more people play, the less chance you have of getting a little exciting reward out of a sundial (i know, they're dust traps, but really!) and it was sad to work hard to open up a new area and have it be just the same. the other region we opened was also a duplicate, though i'm sure i can't remember what it's called.
-no street trophy pieces for the nostalgia projects. these projects are especially hard to be in the top 5, in my opinion, because a)sometimes they're just staright up produce, which is now even harder to stock up on b) they're random if you have enough time to work at them and c) you have to plan ahead or work together with people to have the right stuff. not a big deal, but i'm confused why these projects specifically are piece-less.

    THANK YOU!
-for adding that mail quest, i felt a tiny bit of pride, since it was one of my suggestions of new achievements. i'm sure i flatter myself, but i love that mail system!
-giving XP back for new places :) it's a small compensation for missing the xp at leveling, but as a world-traveler, it's really nice.
-parsnip seeds. first thing i did was plant an entire garden full of them.

so my suggestion to players who are frustrated- step back, and play for an hour, really just an hour, not an hour and then adding some more.  we're having so much fun that we're taking the fun out of the game. i know, right?

  • 1. I miss vendor grain, squeezing chickens is a hassle.

    2. More batterflies! Could we take batterflies home with us?
Posted 17 months ago by A Magical Unicorn Subscriber! | Permalink
  • For what it's worth, I find the nostalgia lands a great place to go for an energy refill now, instead of eating my top notch food (which I like saving for projects when I can).  Choru in particular has been basically deserted every time I've gone, so I easily fill my energy, grab some XP and favor quoins (not to mention those time quoins to cut down my multi-day skill times by a minute or two!  ha!), and pick up some surprise goodies from the dust traps.  Lots of time extensions, gems, food, drinks, and seeds.  Uh, and of course, more paper than I know what to do with.

The only sad part is that it doesn't really make sense to go with a buddy, like it does with swamp runs (barnacle party!) and even tree harvesting binges.

  • This test started out very disappointing and non-fun for me (as noted in a post that I wrote earlier in this thread) - I literally felt like I had nothing to do in this game after all the changes to the gardening and drinks put a huge cramp in my game play.
Especially after I decided to move and ended up breaking the auction which left me with nothing to cook or bartend with and not being able to grow anything because if the time put on it. (Big (((HUGS))) and lots of smooches to hitherto for fixing that mess for me)
But this last day of the test ended up being (almost) as much fun as I normally have playing it.

Ty, Pinot for giving us the un-bundling for the grain!! Absolutely LOVE the way the bundles look out in my yard!! And knowing I can still use the grain from them if need be - awesome!!

Still am not pleased that the Gurly drinks are pretty much made useless :(

Also...ty for lessening the gardening time - tho I still think it's too darned long (unless you want to have to play with the bats all day) - btw, kevbob...you might want to double my order on the 18 wheeler moving van with the super-duper shock absorbers and add extra-heavy duty ones to them  since I'll have to have tons of bat poo to move with me next time - or else hitherto might kill me if I decide to move again and use the auction to move my things again :D :D :D

Oh!! And I LOVE the new clothes!! I now have my apron and chef's hat on and am ready to cook - bat poo be damned! :D

  • I noticed on this last test after these new changes that my avatar runs away from my house.  It happens after I teleport.  My teleport location is right outside my house.  I like that cause I can check to see if I have any mail.  But now, She wont go in to my house.  I trick her by using the arrow keys to click the door as she runs past my house (but it takes a few tries).  I have filed a bug report, but i was wondering if it had anything to do with the new POL security system?

  • Cats, I actually noticed this too, but prior to the last test.  Even though I have found it a tad annoying that my avatar doesn't stop where I assigned the TP spot, I admit to not reporting it as I just thought it was one of those things that just is, together with, maybe only me who found it a little off.  Kudos to you for reporting it ;-)

  • I reported this as a bug, but I haven't gotten a reply.

The issue is with the mouse pointer. Move the mouse pointer around and it will stop trying to force you in one direction.

It only seems to happen on streets with houses on them.

(Also, if you didn't notice that the word "bug" was a link above, then you agree with me that forum links should be more visible).
