Forums need up-vote system.

I've read so many good posts here but hate to just post to say "I agree", or "nice post".  A simple up-vote system would be a great way to let people know I like what they say or that it made me laugh or whatever.

Thumb this up if you agree!

  • Mister Master, you can always say why you agree! But, this is better suited for the Ideas forum, as a Forum idea. :)

  • I'd say that the Ideas forum in particular could use this so that people could +1 or -1 and the devs could get an easier idea of how important each post has become and what priority they should give.

This is part of why I suggested a more segmented system for the ideas forum, so it'd be easier to look for ideas that have already been posted and ideas would congregate in a few threads rather than dozens of posts.

  • Honestly against it, it leads to a lot of people saying 'upvote' and no actual reason or content, or additions, just '+1'.

It could work as long as you can never see a user's total posts, upvotes, or likes, this tends to users simply collecting them, and breaks a lot of forums.

  • forums and groups need: n-o-t-i-f-i-c-a-t-i-o-n-s

  • I agree with Bluigi, and would only consider this a good idea under strict conditions:

Votes must not play any role in ranking the order in which posts appear.
Votes must only show on the post itself, not with the player who casts or receives votes.
A player must reply to a post before that player may vote on it to discourage bot abuse.
A post should have small upper and lower limits to its total vote score (like -10 to +10)

    Summary:
I believe the timestamp-based system we have now is harder to abuse than a vote-based system that could lead to popularity contests, buried content, and herd mentality.

  • I absolutely hate the time-stamp system, because I have no way of knowing what's already been posted unless I hit the right key words for a search.  Also, ideas easily become popular or go by the wayside based upon when they were posted rather than their content.  I do agree with archiving and starting fresh say every month.

To be somewhat vulgar, the Timestamp system doesn't need people abusing it because it's already broken all by itself.

  • Notifications and other improvements of interface to groups and forums like tracking your own threads and threads you pin would be more important to me then voting, really. Voting for ideas isn't more important then duplicating suggestions.

  • Hey - look what I've just noticed.

The title of this post on the forum page has a little pushpin next to it. And that's NOT part of the post title... check the CSS... there's a class 'sticky' attached to it.

    We have sticky posts!

    We have sticky posts!

  • This is a great democratic idea.  Vermillion is along the right track of anti-abuse as well...

  • I agree with everything Vermillion said except this: "A player must reply to a post before that player may vote on it to discourage bot abuse".  This will lead to an awful lot of people posting nothing but "+1" or "like" or whatever.  As the OP stated, the main reason for an upvote system would be to avoid that.

I would definitely prefer to keep threads ordered by timestamp rather than popularity, though.

  • Sorting by timestamp is far from perfect but currently hot topics rise to the top, uninteresting or old topics sink down the page. On a "functionality vs complexity" rating I think it's hard to beat. I like it.

I'd like to see a subtle colour variation or an extra icon for "hot" threads. With hotness to be determined programmatically by the devs using an algorithm that they don't publish. Anything that's published becomes too open to abuse.

  • Ack! Awesome! Sticky posts!

But why is this a sticky post? (Not that I don't like the idea, just wondering.)

ETA: hate to just post to say "I agree", or "nice post".

    Just take a look here :D http://www.glitch.com/forum/ideas/9536/

I suspect this is just the devs trying out their new power :-)

ETA: it's not sticky any more... clearly there are devs experimenting with things.

  • I agree with Vermillion that up votes shouldn't affect post order and shouldn't become a prestige or popularity issue.

I'd like it to just be a simple way for me to give someone a nudge without cluttering up the post listing with "I agree with Vermillion!"

I do think it's worthwhile to show who up voted so people can thank others if they wish

I definitely don't think there should be a down vote option.  I've seen this really wreck the morale of an otherwise pleasant board in the past.

  • I would like to give a post a '+1' to borrow from a certain new social network *aghem*. I would prefer this to an upranking or downranking function. The reason being I want to say 'cool' or 'I agree' with a +1 but I don't want to say 'and the opinion expressed here is the most valuable' which is the subtext of up or down ranking imo.

I am also thinking that as the game and the player-base grow the forums will probably need to be a little more segmented to keep up - ie perhaps a 'trading' section for instance. Although I note that creating a new discussion doesn't involve choosing whether it is off-topic or general, etc.... do mod assign threads to sections? Or is it key word based? Or? Inquiring minds want to know :D

Or is it dependent on which forum you are in when you start the discussion? That just occurred to me.... I could test it of course but that would feel like littering...
