  • Had a dog named Rascal for years (inherited with marriage to hubby, who was told when he left the house the dog had to go with him). Thus, I dubbed myself her "mom." This was years before I had an actual child. But by the time I had my kid, I'd been using Rascalmom for so many things online that I've just kept it. Plus of course my son is now something of a rascal (if a boy isn't a rascal at age four, clearly he is in need of medical assistance!) so it works on both levels :D

  • Sometimes when a mommy and a daddy really love each other a whole lot, they make a Leah.

...then 29 years later, their rather uncreative Leah uses that name for her screen/character name whenever possible.

@sc803, I used to live in SC too :)

  •  Many people have asked if I'm Welsh. lol I used to use Alexis or Lexi as a screenname until a few years ago. Neither is my real name but I liked them. When I was asked to join a particular site both names were taken and the only other name I could think of at the time was a character from Lord of the Rings and when that too was taken I had to come up with something quickly.
Leithwyn came from necessity and imagination and has stayed with me ever since. :)

  • I usually choose game names just because I like the sound of them.  Phoebe comes from a book I had when I was about 5 years old...it was about the adventures of a bee, lol.  And Springback seemed to fit the nature of Glitchland, plus I was really wishing for spring to come!

  • No imagination on my part.  Disney used to have an online game called Virtual Magic Kingdom.  If you created your account online, you could choose your own name.  But, if you created your account IN the park (Disneyland or Disneyworld) you were give a name AND the coveted Mouse ears.  So they named me Pirate Apples. www.flickr.com/photos/57676...

  • It's a long story.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, there was an online game created to promote the movie A.I. It wasn't a game like Glitch where you log in and create an avatar and play in a world. It was a mystery that took place in the future and played itself out through websites, emails and even phone calls. It had puzzles that could only be cracked by the collaborative effort of many individuals working together, each providing their own expertise. It was the first of it's kind but it spawned a new game style called Alternative Reality Games.

Anyway, in the game, there was a character, I think his name was Allen Hobby. He make an ai version of himself called Franken Hobby (as in frankenstein). At the time, I was posting in the cloudmakers (what our group called ourselves) message forum under my own name, Paula. Another Paula was also active which made it confusing. So, I started calling myself FrankenPaula to differentiate myself.

Soon after cloudmakers ended, somebody in the group found GNE and I started playing there. I kept the same name, and it's become a habbit of mine to just keep using this game because I never have to worry about another player having the same name. :)

Btw, the movie A.I. itself was majorly disappointing.

  • LOL to all the reasons why your name is your name. My story is this...I love waterfalls. Also in FS I was UnderlynH20. That was kind of a mishmash of things that roughly meant waterfall as well. Under=underneath; -lyn=meaning waterfall  in some language I don't remember;H20=that's the chemical symbol for water but changed to a zero because it was easier AND my bday is the 20th. I wanted to keep something with water and H20 so folks could transition to my new name. I didn't keep the old because it didn't seem like a human name. So I found an H first name that I liked and then added Waterfall as the last.

  • Mine is from way back in the day when I used to fantasy roleplay on the internet. One of my friends in my group gave me the name Jhennauchan and I've just been using it for things ever since. Most of my gaming websites use this name. (P.S. The roleplay group was called The Taluura and we were on Neopets. Remember Neopets? Sigh.)

  • I picked Tricky Woo because of the James Herriot book and series on TV (All Creatures Great and Small). Tricky Woo is a little Pekinese dog owned by Mrs Pomfrey. I found the dog and the name so ridiculous and funny that I chose it as my username in Faunasphere (seemed appropriate there). I kinda stuck with it from thereon.

  • Lovely story this.....I wrote a horror story when I was young about a scary man called Bob Apple who terrorised children....it was so realistic that my teachers actually thought it was a cry for help and that I had a weird uncle that was...to use a british term...a wrong 'un.    Anyway, my Uncle Charlie wasn't weird, he was just misunderstood and the court of appeal let him off anyway.

  • My real name is Pat (Patricia) and I love Gone With The Wind. Aunt PittyPat is NOT my favorite character in the story but I think the name is cute so I started using it as one of my characters in Animal Crossing and when I started playing Glitch I first typed in Pat but thought that's way too plain for a game like this so retyped it as PittyPat.

  • Hi, I've had fun reading all of your stories. Here's mine -

I played a short lived game a few years ago (vikings, pirates, and ninjas wars) and used this name (based on a real female pirate) for fun, I still liked it even after the game died, I think it's silly, and my real name is Sarah, so it kind of fits ... anyway, I thought I would resurrect it for Glitch. I am in no way like a pirate myself, though I do like pirate films, preferably - "Pippi in the South Seas" the dubbed Swedish version from the 70's, of course ;)

  • Murri Blacksword is the name of my first RPG character, the one I was playing when I met my hubby in an RPG chat.

Murri has always been my alter-ego, really, so I use her name online when I don't wish to use my real name.

I'm not super shy about using my real name online these days, but I do try to be more discrete in gaming communities as I've noticed that there are often people who aren't quite all there and who often take things too seriously, and I'd rather not be harassed at home. Some of the loose cannons might not actually be scared off by my tendency to add bones to my metalworking, or haven't seen my art and don't know any better.

Oddly enough, I do respond to Murri in person just as well as I do my birth name.
I'm also known as The Herbalist in some circles.

And, ah, Tricky Woo, you aren't prone to the malady of your namesake, are you?
(I'm a fan of the books and had wondered if there was a connection.)

  • @Mirri: haha, nooooo, I am definitely not *ahem* like my namesake in that respect (for those who don't know the character: Tricky Woo was overfed by its owner and thus became a very overweight and sickly Pekinese). But unfortunately we do share our love for chocolate so I have to work hard to fight the flab!!

  • My first name in Brian. Such a common name that I usually can never name game characters Brian cuz that and all variations of it are taken. Some suggested to me one day that my name backward sounds like a name in itself....hence "Nairb" was born
Posted 20 months ago by Nairb Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Hmm... Well, my brain spawned my name. That's right; it just spawned it. :P It doesn't seem to have any connection to myself or anything I know. Maybe that's why I thought of it. Glitch wasn't the first time I initially thought up the name Vexia, but it is the first place I put the name into action! I suppose that I got plenty of practice for making up obscure names by playing World of Warcraft. Any name that is in any way similar to a person's actual name is by default taken on every server, so I had to learn to get creative because I wanted to make a lot of different characters. If you're ever in need of an obscure fantasy name, call on Vexia.
Posted 20 months ago by Vexia Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Vexia- You sound a bit like me on the subject of names. My own was just thought up randomly. It is actually not inspired by "Murray" as most people assume. I typed it before I thought of how to say it and only realized afterwards that there might be a confusion due to pronunciation. I get people who think I'm a dude fairly often for this reason.

Tricky Woo - Oh good. :D I imagine having what Mrs. Pomfrey called "Flop-bott" could be most unpleasant as a human...

  • WELLLLLLLL

I'm a HUGE anime otaku (meaning I'm obsessed with anime) so when ever I make a username with any site It usually has to do with an anime I love to watch or a manga I love to read

I got this name from A manga called "Katekyo Hitman Reborn". The theme of it is the mafia and the main mafia family in the manga is called "Vongola" which is where I got the V from

    V-Vongola

And in the manga the vongola family has been around for many generations and the manga starts off with the 1oth generation of the vongola family. So the so the main character often is refereed to as "Vongola Decimo" decimo meaning 10 in Italian. So of course the First vongola, the man who founded the family would also have a nickname. He was often refereed to as "Vongola Primo" primo meaning 1 or first.

    Primo- 1st

and that is what my name means. Sorry for super long explanation XD

  • Tricky Woo - It's better than not being known at all, I'd say.
And humans can actually suffer from that affliction. But we get all technical about describing it as a prolapse.
Hey, if we can't use medical terms here, we might as well give up now.

  • My name has NOTHING to do with Enya (although I do love her music).

A shepherd moon is a moon around a planet like Saturn that keeps its rings in check: Its gravity works to keep the particles in a ring from spiraling onto the planet, or escaping out into space. As such, it "shepherds" the ring like a shepherd would its flock of sheep. When I learned about them in my planetary geology class I thought they were the coolest thing ever, and that has been my username on everything ever since.

  • This is a fun thread :)

My normal name for everything is Artsyshell - real name Michelle (shell) and I am an artist (artsy).  When I started Faunasphere (FS), I didn't want to use that name for whatever random reason I can no longer remember.  Soooo... I errrr.. I have another name I really like (that isn't a real name) that ends in Rain.  And since I thought FS seemed like a light-hearted silly game... out spewed RainyRain.  I kept it for Glitch so it'd be easier to find all my FS friends.

And for the record, the name still cracks me up.

  • this thread made me laugh, so i will contribute my own origin story.

back in high school, a friend gave me the nickname katya, which proved too common for practical use on the internet, so it morphed into katla, which is a similar name taken from an old children's book i loved.

this became katlazam after i accidentally made a male character in kingdom of loathing, back before i knew you could get a gender change operation in the sleazy back alley.  in naming my alt (which became my main), i added a old-school-batman-esque sound effect, and katlazam was born.
