Random ranting of a mid level player...

post edited because.. I guess we all don't read replies, I felt a bit... misunderstood.

My reply:
Gosh this thread still survive :p I'm tired of repeating myself so many times: I AM going out to Ur, as I've written in my unedited post, and said again and again, but so many people misread it as I'm being bored :p
The reason why I wrote this is simply because I wanted to meet more Glitchen in Ur....... so I was trying to either encourage others to go out / suggest something to stop people from just sticking to the routes, like teleport cost/skill.

I met one of my good friend I met in Glitch because I was out there in Ur. I was hoping that this would continue.

Anyhoo... I've found that lurking in global is an easier way to meet people, so I shall now shut up :p

The original post:
With the resource street, one could technically get enough 'free energy' to help them gain iMG/currants/favour etc, and the rate of levelling up gets faster, but also more boring. How?

Let's pick Ancestral Land. Plenty of high output energy quoins.

- Mine? Get to a sparkly route, mine till I'm almost dead, and then go back to AL. Harvest? Then tree/crop/herb route it shall be. Pet pigs? Plenty of pig cubes on home street. Crush? Go home and do it. Repeat ad nauseum. No more need for food.

- Bags full? Teleport home for free, dump everything on the floor, come back for more goodies.

- Death? Plenty of mood quoins to get to 100% again.

- Sloths? Teleport, feed, teleport back, get AL energy quoins.

- Nostalgia? Time limit? I'm invincible to that, even without potion of ancestral spirit. Why? Because ancestral nostalgia decreases when I'm home!
(see, this is why I didn't want to write on this subject, because I'm quite convinced that this is a bug, a very exploitable one, and exploit it I did)

I could stay in ancestral land FOREVER.... and come out once a day to donate. Again, even the teleport 'energy fee' is coverable after getting a couple of energy quoin in AL.

This has been a very efficient way to level up. Even without ancestral line, resource route has made everything easier. Almost too easy... No more hunting for fireflies, or jumping for that hard to reach barnacle, or fighting for a rock to mine.

We no longer explore the wonderful world, and instead we are reduced to mindless resource gathering blob.  It was too easy; I now realised why I'm getting bored with the game.

Neva neva / Ajaya Bliss are now barren, no more random chats while mining :(
We seldom see any Glitchen outside Groddle. Ur became a lonely, empty world, too big for this tiny me.

We will never again experience the excitements that was the past:
- like the spice vs gas war
- or the crop/herb stealing saga
- or the fight for rocks to mine back in the day when 'help mine' doesn't exist (I can't find the thread anymore.....)
- or street projects...

I kinda wished I 'lived' during that era. It's the time when we are still shaping Ur with our imagination, and contributing to its growth.

I kinda wish I get to pick a house like in the past, and work for it before I get it.

I digress. I love the new housing arrangements. The towers and the amount of things we can do with it + SDBs are exciting, and I can't wait to build my own furniture. I'd pay good currants for those suscription/credit only models.

Anyway, my ranting could go on forever. But well, seeing that I don't normally contribute to any forums, I instead unknowingly chose to dump almost everything I can think of in one topic :p

Just a suggestion:
- Why now keep the nostalgia counter active as long as we're in AL despite having teleported home/other people's street? That way we can't exploit the high value quoins. (Though as the big exploiter of this I'd be the first person to be sad if my own suggestion get implemented...)

I don't know how to fill Ur with Glitchens again. Except swearing off resource route, which I'm doing.
Anyway, there's still so much in the game to have fun in :)

  • "We no longer explore the wonderful world, and instead we are reduced to mindless resource gathering blob."

Speak for yourself. I don't rely on AL and I don't stick to resources routes. The only time I really go for resource routes is when I need gas or fruit. I visit home streets, but I prefer the ones that have a mix of items, like street out in Ur.

You don't have to play AL/Resource Route roulette if you don't want to. And if you don't let yourself.

These were all bad things. I'm glad they're gone. I think TS is probably glad players have fewer reasons to fight now as well. Well, tree wars, garden drama, and rock fighting. I too miss old street projects. So many badges I'll never get. :(

  • Uh... sorry, I guess I was too long winded :p The whole point  was about how I'm reduced to absent-mindedly gathering stuff off the resource route, so much that I never explore Ur anymore because it's that much harder to gather things there. Ur is now emptier and it's pointless to go to the peripheries like Aranna besides to go buy from that rare item vendor, and to gather qurazy quoins. I found that a bit of a shame.

And yes, I'm swearing off resource route from now :p (like I said at the conclusion XD)

@Justin: Yeah... I'm still a young Glitch, that's why I can only find amusement in reading what happened before. I'm sure I would hate it too if I really was playing when those 'wars' happen :p

  • I constantly forget to visit AL & Balzare.
Leveling up isn't a huge thing to me.

I do wander around Ur, just as I do wander home streets and towers.
Remember, just because you play one way doesn't mean everyone does.
Also, just because you don't see many people doesn't mean they're not out there.

I only had good experiences in the locked mining areas a couple of times.
Every other time I witnessed/experienced nasty, vicious, hateful behaviour.
Some people loved mining in them, and there are groups for people to get together and mine/party in there now.

I never took part in the tree wars, but I know it upset a lot of people.
The herb and crop issues still continue.
    I don't understand why you miss/celebrate conflict.

If boredom is an issue for you I would suggest looking at joining some groups to mingle with like minded people (lots of great ones out there), taking a bit of a break from Glitch to recharge, or even maybe deciding to find a game better suited to you.

Hopefully you can find enjoyment in Glitch again.
I personally hope it isn't through the introduction of more conflict in the game.
I play other MMOs with that content.
If that's your thing, maybe you could add some games to your play range :)

  • So stop absent-mindedly gathering things and go out in Ur.

I spend most of my time exploring Ur and I see tons of people there. As many as if not more than I saw before home streets etc. were introduced. I've especially seen a lot of people since invites were opened again, as new players begin exploring the world as well.

Everyone plays for different reasons / with different goals. If your goal is only to level up as quickly/efficiently as possible, sticking to resource routes and the AL may be the way to go. If your goal is to get out and see other players, then get out and see other players.

  • I'm sorry if I sound like I'm not enjoying Glitch... This rant's purpose was the realisation on what stupid things I've done :p It's my decision that I should stop gathering resources absent mindedly....... I really still am having a good time in this game :p

And I haven't started playing when those bad things happen. I found out just because I like reading old forum stuff. I only find amusement that people can behave in such a way in such a peaceful game, I don't in any way support it. I'd hate it too if it happen to me.

Please don't form any bad impression too quickly >_<

  • @ purple_goldfish - I think I know what you're saying. There is not enough motivation/challenge to go out in Ur. I love most of the new stuff - the housing, the ability to choose our own resources & specialties, the new "dead-end" stones that transport you somewhere (who knows). Sometimes it feels like you're playing alone, though. (And, yes, I know that is how some people want to play, which is fine.)
Maybe the key is to slow down and not worry about leveling up too fast. Put yourself in the position of having to eat. IM some friends and arrange to go mining or foxing or slothing. Have 2 or 3 friends go to the AL with you but to different roads and agree to meet up at a central point. Let yourself get kicked out! This is, after all, a game.
I think it was good that I had to buy my first house. I miss the neighbourhood BEING someplace in the world.
    Just saying :)

  • It is NOT any harder to gather from Ur than it was before - AT ALL.

However it is easier to gather from home streets.  Thats about it.  I like seeing 15 spice bushes all in a nice row.  It beats the shit out of the spice/gas wars when it was a damn mess and folks were pissed off all the time about it.

Id like to think that the spice war was what gave us the home streets.  But only TS knows for sure and doesnt owe us an explanation.

  • It's definitely possible to do the things like going out in Ur, relaxing, getting friends together, etc, and I think there's a big place for that.  It's fun to play the game in an exploring type of fashion. But there's a lot of people who do like to play in a more "optimized" or "efficient" fashion, and from what I can tell home streets play a big role in that for a lot of people.

If players prioritize efficiency over getting out in the non-home-street areas, that's their choice; the game is all about choices and nobody is going to be able to do everything the game has to offer.  But at the same time I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting more draws to the non-home-street areas: more unique animals, more things like the qurazy quoins and unique areas like basements, and so forth. Maybe even stuff that hasn't been imagined yet! :)

edit: and, I'm sorry - realized I mostly repeated stuff other people've said :)

  • @ purple: Another thing to keep in mind is that we are still in Beta. TS is limiting the number of new players for now so they can roll out new items, quests, tweaks, etc. and make sure they are working as hoped. A lot is still going on in the background preparing for the re-launch. When the game goes live, there will be hundreds (thousands?) more players landing all over UR:)

  • @Patricia: Exactly :) that's what I meant, without thinking, there's less motivation to go to Ur.

But that's easily remediable by swearing off resource route.

But at the same time I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting more draws to the non-home-street areas: more unique animals, more things like the qurazy quoins and unique areas like basements, and so forth.

  • Purple, I think that what you described in your original post is all relative to choices you've made, as others have said.  Now that I've reached higher levels, it is ridiculously easy to get img/goods but I'm pleased it's that way!  I spent plenty of time as a young'un walking street after street looking for what I needed, now the game would lose value for me if I still had to work that hard to find, say, planks :)   I'm not much of a social person online, the fun for me is being able to obtain items easier w/ higher levels/more currants saved.

The drawback that I'm seeing w/ the new game features relates to new players.  I'm sure it's only a handful of new glitches, but it seems that seeking goods in the Trade Channel has taken the place of going out and learning where to get the items.   I wonder what level you have to be to get the  Trade Channel upgrade card...

  • Purple, I feel ya!  I've been in the 30s for a while, and I had run out of major things to do.  Once I found all the ghosts, that was pretty much it for quests.  But, as a sandbox game, and a social sandbox as well, I've latched on to my goofy side and though of goofy stuff to do.  For example, Street Decorating!  There are also the awards for Cubimal racing and hosting parties, etc.

Yes, mindless wandering about grabbing stuff can get dull.  Join a group and let the imagination run free!

  • AB & NN were only busy when there were only two different activities in the game that were really worth any time.  Namely animal nibbling or mining.  Their emptiness is only tangentially because of home streets.

If there were no home streets, and TS had put customizable interiors into the old housing system, these streets would still be abandoned.  I'm part of a large social group that met because of mining.  And even though it's pretty much the same group that brought Housing Resource Routes to Glitch, we almost always use the same street we met on to do most of our mining rather than any route.

Yet despite that it is important to us, I find sometimes 30 or more days have passed between my visits.  And multiple months sometimes pass before we are all there at the same time.  But since we aren't mining on routes, the routes can't be the source of our changed behavior.

The source is simple, and I predicted it last fall.  There are many, many, many more activities than there were in the game then.  Mining is no longer the primary game activity for any of us.  We're fox brushing, playing iMG games, gathering components to craft furniture and design rooms.  We're gardening to make gardening potions to do more gardening.  We're doing dozens of things that simply didn't exist in the fall.

So are the people from AB and NN.  And this time next year, I suspect our patterns will be different again, and again the year after that should we all still be playing.

MMOs change, or they die.  I'd much rather Glitch change than die.

  • Sometimes it is beneficial to contemplate goals that we might create for ourselves.  If I did not do this I probably would not be playing today.  At least that is how I play, being not the most gregarious of Glitchen.
Posted 84 days ago by Joni Mitchell Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'm really sorry how boringly easy this is for you - you do have a choice tho

for example I do most of my mining out in the world instead of hiding on home streets, same with collecting majority of the resources I need... If there's something I need a lot of fast, I pop into a route to collect a couple of stacks or so - then back out into the world for me...

I regularly see groups of glitchen out exploring the world either together, or by random chance meeting on the streets of Ur. Why not try making a conscious decision to change the way you play and you might find what you're looking for...

  • I have to say that as much as I do enjoy the new housing--there was something special about having to work and save to afford your first house that is missing now.
Posted 84 days ago by chilirlw Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Instead you have a choice to work and save to make your house (and optionally tower) the size you want it to be.  (And possibly work much harder at that, for that matter.)

  • I think that harvesting/mining/nibbling etc. in Ur should be tweaked to offer slightly better returns than those provided on home streets. I also think there should be a small energy cost to teleporting to home streets other than you own.
